After meeting with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, he says, “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” Why should we celebrate the spirit of Christmas one day a year?

Yes, I know it’s February. I haven’t lost my mind. But when I think of Valentine’s Day, I feel the same way as Scrooge. To a similar way of thinking, why should the idea of demonstrating our love be relegated to February 14th? Let’s live the spirit of love every day of the year, not just on Valentine’s Day. As you celebrate with your loved ones, let’s all remember the importance of showing our significant others and family how much they mean to us every day. Not just on Valentine’s.

Roses are optional, but romance and love can take so many different forms. From a note tucked into a lunchbox to a random text to let someone know you’re thinking of them.

Let’s let love blossom every day this year!

The face of any medical office is the front desk as you walk in! The front office is the introduction to the patient of where they’re about to be for the next hour or so of their lives. In most cases, 99% of people would prefer to steer clear of any doctor’s office in exchange for a pleasant day at the park, shopping or even in the comfort of their own home. So it goes without saying that making a person feel welcome and safe as they enter for an appointment is vital!

Our article this month is to discuss what the role of the “Receptionist” includes.

GREET PATIENTS

At Summit Eye Care we want our patients to feel welcome.

Our goal is to let the patients know we are here to serve them and are happy to do so.

This person often sets the scene for the remainder of the practice.

MAINTAIN ACCURATE DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

This was a simple task in the past; however, with the addition of emails, cell phones, texting, etc., more information is required in order to continue to serve our patients long after the visit is over. Correct information is required in order to make future appointment confirmation calls, mail pertinent information, and/or provide information through the patient portal if acceptable. Referring doctors and/or primary care physicians’ names are requested. This enables us to send reports from our office to your care givers to ensure you’re receiving the best care from all parties involved.

Asking a lot of questions is necessary at the check-in process. We strive to complete this process as professionally as possible.

INSURANCE

This can be a very difficult area for patients and staff. The most important information a person can provide at their appointment is a current insurance card. “Why to every visit?” you may ask. Insurances tend to vary or change often. We are given more opportunities to “re-enlist” or “change plans” than in the past.

The eye care profession is the only medical office that deals with two types of insurance – one is the medical and one is the vision, and then, low and behold – some insurances combine both! The fine line between medical and/or vision can be a tough balancing act. Medical plans cover just that – medical problems, such as glaucoma, cataracts, dry eyes, red/ itching eyes, etc. Vision plans cover “routine” eye care such as having an exam for nearsightedness, astigmatism, farsightedness, etc. Some plans also cover contact lens evaluations and/or the supply of contact lens and/ or glasses. The confusion comes when a patient is having red/itching eyes and wants a “routine” exam simultaneously. Most of the time the insurances dictate what can be accomplished in one visit. At Summit Eye Care we try our best to accommodate our patient, but are sometimes limited by the insurance plans and their rules.

Learning the finer points of their selling success will be time well spent! Here’s what to expect if an estate sale proves to be your best option.

• Laster’s works daily with attorneys, executors, administrators, individuals, and families to evaluate their particular needs.

For estate sale clients, their services include market value appraisals, tag sales, selling items at auction, handling commissioned consignments, and the purchase of individual items, or entire estates if that best suits your family’s personal situation.

A Look into Downtown Winston-Salem: The Present

Downtown Winston-Salem is a busy, bustling destination for people of all ages. There are multiple shops, restaurants, parks, and entertainment venues and it keeps growing. In addition, the area has become a favorite place to live, especially for the millennials.

Last month, I looked at the past of the Camel City and how downtown Winston-Salem was built. Now, let’s look at what the City of Arts and Innovation currently offers for Winston-Salem residents and families.

Downtown Winston-Salem is home to many districts, including the Arts District, Theater District, Twin City Quarter, the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, Courthouse Square, the Holly Avenue Historic Neighborhood, the Goler Heights Neighborhood, and Burke Street, Brookstown Avenue, and the BB&T Ballpark area. All of these areas are known for their distinctive features.

• The Arts District gives a true display of the many talented artists that reside in the area. It is located between Trade and Liberty Streets, between 5th and 7th Streets. People can visit studios, galleries, and shops, while viewing colorful murals painted on the outside of the buildings.

• The Theater District is known for its year-round theatrical and live performances on the City of Arts and Innovation’s multiple stages. Downtown WinstonSalem is home to over six theatres, including the HanesBrands Theatre, the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, the Stevens Center, A/perture Cinema, the Community Arts Café, and Winston Square Park.

• The Twin City Quarter can be seen mostly on Cherry Street and is composed of the newly renovated Benton Convention Center, Embassy Suites, the Marriott, and the Winston-Salem Journal. Also, there are many shops and restaurants in the district, as well.

• The Wake Forest Innovation Quarter is the medical side to downtown Winston-Salem. It is located in the eastern part and is a major contributor to the city’s health care and technology research, as well as providing employment.

• Courthouse Square includes the historic Pepper Building, the original R.J. Reynolds headquarters (today known as the upscale Kimpton Cardinal Hotel and The Katharine Brasserie restaurant), and the County Courthouse. Also, Civic Plaza has become a popular place in the past few years for its many events, music and dance performances, and cultural festivals.

• Located on the southwestern edge of downtown WinstonSalem, the Holly Avenue Historic Neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Districts. Buildings in the neighborhood date back to between 1885 and 1952. The Henry Case House, James Jessup House, Calvary Moravian Church, and the T.R. Brann’s store are notable places in the area.

• The Goler Heights Neighborhood is located along Patterson Avenue and East Sixth Street. This district is used to connect the Arts District and the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. In 1998, the Goler AME Church decided to bring the area back to life and renovate the former Brown and Williamson tobacco plant (which is now the Gallery Loft apartments), and the Goler Manor and Goler Enrichment Center, along with other changes, including construction of new homes.

• Burke Street, Brookstown Avenue, and the BB&T Ballpark connects downtown Winston-Salem to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the uptown part of the city. Within this area, there are retail, office, and residential buildings, and of course, a ballpark. The BB&T Ballpark is home to the Winston-Salem Dash baseball team. In addition, Burke Street, Brookstown Avenue, and the BB&T Ballpark are close to Business I-40 and Peters Creek Parkway.

One could spend all day downtown, shopping, eating, and taking in the local sites and entertainment. Numerous shops and restaurants are all over the area and there is a taste for every person. Also, there are multiple parks, including Bailey Park, Washington Park, and the Art Park. Take a step back in time and visit historic Old Salem and Salem College on Church Street.

Last, but not least, end your day by taking in a local show or a Gallery Hop. Throughout the year, downtown Winston-Salem hosts cultural festivals, music festivals, 5k races for charities, the Bookmarks festival, and much more. In the past few years, the area has become a great place for singles and families to live and explore.

Be Contagious

You are contagious. And you are contagious.

And you, and you, and you are contagious!

(Ten points to you if you read that in an Oprah Winfrey voice.) Since you can share your infection, it’s up to you to spread it around. And for once – people actually want what you have. No need to cover your mouth, or call in sick to work, because if you do, you won’t be able to share it.

Of course, we’re speaking of a contagious smile. An infectious laugh. Contagious joy.

Contagious energy. These are the things worth sharing. And they take little to no effort on your part, and they are free to friends, family, and even strangers! Best of all – these kinds of contagious things can create an epidemic that spreads to people beyond the ones you come in direct contact with. Let’s discuss the best strategies for sharing.

CONTAGIOUS SMILE

“Cover your mouth when you cough. Never cover it when you smile.” ~Author Unknown Have you ever noticed that when you’re walking down the street or in a store, if you receive a smile, you tend to involuntarily smile back? Smiles, like yawns, are truly contagious. There’s a lot of boring science behind it, but the simplified version is this: when you receive a smile, your brain automatically mimics the response in an effort to understand the facial expression.

The result is that you automatically feel an uplift in your own emotional control panel because you’ve recognized a smile as a

reaction that is associated with a positive feeling. Now, isn’t that worth sharing a smile for? (If you want to read the boring explanation, feel free to look up Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood’s paper from the University of Wisconsin – “Trends in Cognitive Sciences.”)

INFECTIOUS LAUGH

“Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” ~Victor Borge When they say laughter is the best medicine, they aren’t kidding. Laughter releases endorphins and also helps decrease stress.

So when you share laughter with others, you’re actually helping them be healthier people. Scientists have even proven that laughter can relieve pain in patients. Other benefits include calories burned, relaxation, and a boost to the immune system. So get out the joke book and share some laughs.

CONTAGIOUS JOY

“Joy is portable. Bring it with you.” ~Author Unknown There is a great difference between “happiness” and “joy,” yet our world tends to lump them in the same category.

Happiness is external - it’s motivated by people, places, or things. Our joy, however, isn’t defined by our circumstances but is rooted within. It’s a peace that envelops us, even if we are in the middle of tragedy and despair. For many, joy is the side effect of

a deep and personal faith. However, it also comes down to choice. For every obligation and task we face, we have a choice about how we’ll approach it. Will we whine and complain, or approach it joyfully as an opportunity to do a good job and recognize the benefits (however much of a stretch they may be)? Joyful people are a magnet for others. People gravitate towards their positive approach to every challenge. It doesn’t mean that things are easier for joyful people, but it means they’ve found ways not to let the difficulties bring them down.

CONTAGIOUS ENERGY

“Energy is contagious. Either you affect people, or you infect people.” ~T. Harv Eker As the title of the book implies, Jon Gordon’s “The Energy Bus,” speaks a lot about the impact of both positive and negative energy on productivity. As great as this book is, you don’t need to read it to know that being around people who are positive, optimistic, hopeful, and excited tends to attract better results than those who are negative, disdainful, and in general, emotionally draining. That’s just common sense. If you’re looking to build up friends, practice positive, contagious energy and watch them line up. People want positive energy. They are attracted to it and energized by it.

That’s it. Spread a smile, a kind word, a positive thought, share a laugh, and watch the impact that extends beyond any reach you could have imagined!

CATCH IT!

You can hear a catchphrase so often that you don’t catch it anymore.

Familiarity causes the words to sluggishly slip unnoticed into the back seat of your thoughts while fresh sights and sounds take the wheel.

For instance, if I had a dime for every time my mama said, “God loves you,” my children’s college tuition would be paid in full. For the longest time, the repetition deafened me to the gravity of those words. Sure, God loves me. God loves everybody.

To be honest, I let the words roll off of me because I wasn’t particularly sure how He really felt about me. After all, I knew my failings in real time. Eventually I took a closer look at this “God loves you” God, and I realized He actually did love even me. Not even my imperfections could jeopardize this reality. But can I tell you a secret?

I assumed God loves me because that’s what He’s supposed to do.

Isn’t it God’s job to love? It’s pretty much written in the contract for “God-dom,” right?

If God had no choice in the matter, His love seemed dutiful, kind of like taking out trash or paying taxes . . . it’ the right thing to do, but certainly nothing to get excited about.

I repeatedly heard similar gracious catchphrases that further skewed my perceptions, such as, “God accepts you just as you are.”

Accepts? He “accepts” me? This description of God’s love sounded as if He only begrudgingly allowed me inside His inner circle.

It took me years to realize how severely my assumptions had veered off track. People’s descriptions and interpretations of God’s love fall short every time. His intentions toward us are simply too enormous for the human language. The reality is that God doesn’t merely accept us. The Creator of the Universe fully embraces us as family. It utterly astounds me!

So what’s the difference between “accept” and “embrace”? Imagine kindly allowing a pedestrian to cross in front of you in a busy parking lot. You both go separately about your business, with no

consequence but no connection either. Now imagine passionately enveloping your child after a long separation. You unreservedly wrap yourself around that walking, talking piece of your heart with love that refuses to let go. Accept and embrace . . . do you catch the difference?

Are you beginning to see the irrationality of this “God loves you”?

Jesus left home to make a home in you. There was no coercion, no mere duty…only a compelling love that willingly and selflessly did whatever it took to get in your corner and remain there all your days.

Why don’t you stop for a moment and let your soul breathe Him in?

Inhale and exhale the inexhaustible love of God that whispers to your heart right now.

When we truly “catch” God’s intentions toward us, we can live with a profound assurance that His relentless love pursues us. We can walk confidently through our days knowing that the Father never hesitantly accepts us; rather, He lavishly embraces us. God’s unwavering obsession with our well-being energizes us to live wholly empowered by all He is and all He gives.

When we truly discern how inexhaustibly God loves us and delights in saying “yes” to our deepest desires, we will wholeheartedly trust His “no” or “not yet.” This good Father sees around the bend and protects us in ways that remain hidden from where we stand, but always work for our good.

It’s time to hit the reset button. Stop allowing distorted paradigms to taint your perception of God’s love for you. Live full because He gives fully!

Say it with me: I am extremely blessed. I am highly favored.

I am deeply loved. Oh, YES. YOU. ARE! Catch that!

Community, Cinema, & Popcorn: A Prescription for the Heart “Where else do you have people, strangers, of all ages, nationalities, religions, beliefs, laughing or crying together, in the dark even, other than at the movies?”

Lawren asks.

“There’s something about this sense of community, the bonding, the discussions, that are held here at a/perture,” she continues.

Ahh, February – the month of love, the color red, and national festivities. It’s the month we celebrate Black history, Mardi Gras, and heart health. We’re into the new year enough to know if we’re going to keep our resolutions or forgive ourselves that we even made them. It’s the month where, here in Winston-Salem, we fear ice storms the most and put the clicker on our calendars for spring.

And February is the second month of a/perture cinema’s fiscal year – independent art house gone nonprofit. (You know the place: downtown on 4th Street, across from Camino.) February – when staff works behind the scenes to finalize the curation of many of the year’s forthcoming indie, foreign, and blockbuster films.

Whether it’s a classical or newly released film or a series such as Classics & Cult, Looking @ Art Cinema, or brand new Black Cinema - a/ journey, a/perture strives to educate and entertain through the art of film.

For Lawren Desai, a/perture’s founder and Executive Director, a/ perture isn’t just a movie theater, it’s a space where people gather and share. It’s where ideas are hatched.

It’s where creativity blooms. It’s a meeting space whether you’re in the theater, a/trium, or checking out an exhibition from a local artist in the gallery.

Still, a/perture is perhaps an unexpected place that fits into heart health.

a/perture is the only art house cinema in the area. There are other theaters and programs around film, but a/perture is unique in that it’s a one-stop house.

When you walk through the doors of this intimate theater, there’s an aesthetic that helps people feel at home. Though a/perture hasn’t collected its own scientific data on the health benefits of cinema, there are studies that speak to the effects cinema has on one’s well-being. In a recent study, “Cinema is Good for You,” C Noah Uhrig argues: …the visual stimulation associated with viewing films has therapeutic effects and the collective experience of emotions derived from viewing films in the cinema provide a controlled atmosphere in which to explore roles and social relations outside the ordinary realms of one’s existence.

I have found that frequent cinema attendance is associated with lower odds of reporting problems with anxiety or depression and is often directly related to feelings of “happiness.”

It makes sense that when you’re doing something you enjoy and are with others who are enjoying it that there’s a sense of wholeness and wellbeing.

Dear June…

That Romantic Something February is the month that we all think about romance. For me, I prefer my husband to either treat me to a dinner out or just something romantic instead of perfume, flowers, or candy. The “something” romantic could be a new comforter or throw. He could also write a note in a nice card like, “Here is a voucher to get our bedroom painted.”

I am attempting to throw out ideas to start planting in your husband’s mind, day planner, or even check list. Anything to remind your husband that Valentine’s Day is very special to women. My daughter is 27-year-old and she has always been a romantic, as most women are, including myself. Itemized below are a few suggestions to help you determine your priorities for the coming 2018 Valentine’s Day that you can tease your husband with: 1. Hire a one-hour consultation with a professional designer 2. Buy fine linens for your bedroom 3. Purchase a new comfortable club chair 4. Add accessories (a throw for the club chair or for the foot of your bed) Think about what you love most as you “inspire for a new look” and décor.

Most of us do not keep our clothes for more than a few years and replace them. Think about it.

Why would you keep your home the same way for l0 years or more? I honestly don’t think twice if I see a pair of earrings or a new blouse that I want. I am just as guilty, as most, that the house becomes a secondary priority. But guess what? For 2018, I am making a list of what I need to do to our l5-year old house to bring some new life into it. My husband will have his list before Valentine’s Day and trust me, it will be welcomed because he also struggles to come up with a present that I will treasure.

MAKE IT FUN & GRAB THEIR ATTENTION.

Every day there is a slew of advertisements fighting for our attention. Take time to create a marketing strategy that doesn’t feel stale or too much like other advertisements. Use your brand “voice” to keep it unique and show customers what you are all about while adding some fun into the mix. Remember that nobody is a fan of endless self-promotion, so think outside the box and put something of value out there, too.

I promise this will make all the difference! Your marketing should plant ideas in people’s heads that make them see your product as having a story behind it and with a function for their life,

When I told my friend I’d be reviewing Five Points for the February issue of Forsyth Woman, she asked what kind of food they serve. Honestly, the question stopped me. Not because I couldn’t answer, but because I wasn’t sure where to begin.

It’s always such a delight to visit Five Points, where the menu is diverse, yet each dish is given its own signature touch of sophisticated flavor. I decided the best way to answer was simply to bring her with me.

It was a good call; my friend is new to the area. Though I’ve dined at Five Points many times, it was a wonderful refresher to see it through her eyes. She was delighted by the atmosphere, hospitality, and of course – the food!

I’ve decided to cut out carbs this month with the one caveat being Rosey’s Review night. I was so happy for my exceptionto-the-rule when our wonderfully attentive server brought us a basket of Five Points’ signature WARM BREAD. There’s a New Orleans’ beignet quality to these small rolls, and any carb lover will agree – they are worth ruining any diet.

General Managers Jack and Pam Welker know I prefer for the restaurant I am reviewing to choose the menu (so I can be sure to highlight their new dishes and specialty favorites).

And, wow… Starting with appetizers, a parade of culinary excellence made its way from the kitchen to the dining room in great style, each dish, artfully presented.

Our appetizers included TUNA TARTARE TACOS, which was a delightful plate of four miniature crunchy tacos – the crispy texture was a fantastic complement to the soft fresh tuna.

Served with ASIAN NAPA SLAW, the appetizer was garnished with a wasabi cream sauce. This is a perfectly proportioned appetizer, or even a small meal. It was a flavorful and decadent way to start!

You simply can’t go wrong with a classic – PIMENTO CHEESE. At Five Points, they make theirs from a combination of aged cheddar, Vermont white cheddar, and pepper jack cheeses.

With traditional roasted red peppers mixed in, it’s a rich and smoky appetizer served with plenty of toasted Lavash (a soft, thin flatbread).

Another cheesy favorite is the SPINACH ARTICHOKE DIP. The mild flavor of spinach mixes beautifully with sharp flavors of artichoke. Pepper Jack and Parmigiano-Reggiano complete this masterpiece. Its creamy goodness is also enjoyed with Five Point’s toasted Lavash.

POMEGRANATE SHRIMP rounded out our appetizer course.

Six large shrimp that are flash-fried and tossed in Asian pomegranate glaze are served on top of a bed of basmati rice. Delicious! Another appetizer that could easily be a small dinner.

Ah, the WARM GOAT SALAD. My favorite salad in the world.

This is a unique combination of flavors: greens with cucumbers, tomatoes, cranberries, dates, spiced pecans, balsamic glaze, and a warm, lightly breaded disc of goat cheese for the perfect creamy addition. Amazing on its own, it’s also great with grilled chicken if you’re looking for an idea for lunch!

If you’re more of a traditional salad person, you won’t be disappointed with Five Points’ CHOP SALAD. A mix of iceberg and romaine lettuces with tomatoes, cucumbers, roasted corn salsa, and aged cheddar are tossed with housemade garlic buttermilk ranch.

Topped with croutons, this is an example of why Americans came to love salads.

On to dinner! I love FILET MIGNON, and Five Points knows how to make an amazing steak. It is hickory grilled, topped with a cabernet demi-glaze and served with a garnish of grilled leeks. It had that perfect crust of a seared steak, and it’s served with redskin mashed potatoes, and a fresh vegetable (which alternates based on the day and the season).

If you’re longing for the coast, you’ll definitely want to try the LOBSTER LOBSTER. This dish is so good, they had to name it twice.

Two lobster tails – one grilled, one fried, or you can double up the same – your preference. These fresh-from-Maine beauties are served with both drawn butter and a lemon-thyme butter sauce. This seafood delicacy melts in your mouth. Served with a delicious salt-crusted baked potato and a fresh veggie – all I can say is, “Go hungry!”

The humble chicken gets a makeover when Chef Graham Parsons gets ahold of it! The DIJON CHICKEN breast is basted with a thick Dijon cream sauce. Cooked to perfection, it’s tender and perfectly complemented with sautéed spinach and sundried tomatoes. An excellent option!

MAPLE BALSAMIC PORK CHOPS rounded out our entrees and with the bone-in rib cooked tender, there aren’t enough words for how flavorful this dish is. This is a large pork chop, too, so there’s a good chance you’ll have leftovers to enjoy! Especially if you dig into the sides – those redskin mashed potatoes and a fresh vegetable make this an all-American favorite.

You can’t go to Five Points without sneaking a peek at their dessert menu. The WARM BELGIAN CHOCOLATE TORTE is a chocolatelover’s dream. While we were all full, we couldn’t help but sit up straight and dig in!

We also enjoyed homemade CHEESECAKE made, of course, with the perfect graham cracker crust every cheesecake needs! So good.

And large enough to share. I’m not saying you have to, but just putting it out there.

The WHITE CHOCOLATE BREAD PUDDING came out with a kind of smug arrogance. If it could have spoken, it would have likely taunted me that I was unable to turn my spoon away. Like a good bread pudding, this was dense, rich, and beautifully accented with a ribbon of salted caramel.

One of my favorite desserts is COCONUT CAKE. If you like coconut, you probably agree with me, and the Five Points team – they get five gold stars for this delicious number. The cake was moist, and the coconut was amazing.

You’ve adored them since 2007 for the jewelry and accessories you can’t get enough of, along with trendy clothing and creative gifts. Now you’ll love them for taking the local prom and formalwear scene to the next amazing level!

Owner Kristina Prysiazniuk and her dedicated team recently refurbished additional space near their current boutique and have welcomed the onset of prom season with open arms. Their second location, Hip Chics Prom & Formal Wear and Village Tuxedo, which celebrated its grand opening in early January with 300 sample dresses, was a journey that came about through varying events, but always with the same spirit and style that Hip Chics is known for.

The road to prom began four years ago when Kristina’s daughter, Logan, was dress shopping, and they began to realize there were few fashionable options in the area.

Many of Logan’s friends were traveling to Charlotte and Raleigh to find dresses they loved, and she suggested to her mother that Hip Chics carry stylish prom looks so girls could shop locally.

Testing the waters, Kristina says they started out small the next year with just a few promperfect dresses tucked away in a corner of the boutique. Seeing success, fast forward a couple of years, and with an additional 2,400 square foot of space, they expanded their prom category a bit more. Year three found them expanding both the lines they carried, and their dressing areas, and seeing the dream continue to grow. In 2017, when additional showroom space – 3,000 square feet to be exact – became available in the same shopping center, Kristina and her team (including daughter and now prom buyer, Logan!)

worked tirelessly to update the new space with the shabby chic interior look she loves. They hit the Atlanta prom Market for a whirlwind buying trip, and are now fully immersed in both prom and formal wear.

Now, Logan is a sophomore in college, and a buyer for the prom shop, while Kristina’s son, Parker, is a sophomore in high school and models for Village Tuxedo. When Hip Chics first introduced prom fashions to their clientele, they marked the occasion with a “Breakfast at Tiffany” style fashion show, putting the word out they were serious about style and elegance.

Clarisse, Rachel Allen, Madison James, Tiffany Designs, Alyce Paris, La Femme, and Dave & Johnny are a few of the lines they carry, along with tuxedo rentals that include Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein – all in a variety of sizes and price points.

Hip Chics also offers a unique twist to the prom process: They are happy to register each dress under the client’s school name, and will not sell the same dress, in the same color, to another girl at the same school.

Broadening the business has been a perfect fit so far.

“Opening the new space allows us to keep all of our boutique and urban shop intact with both clothing and the same customer service as always, while being able to focus on just the prom business on the new side,” explains Kristina.

What’s hot for this prom season? The subtle elegance of blush, florals to have some fun with, and sophisticated black-and-white are among our favorites, with necklines and bodices to suit every figure, and stylish, off-theshoulder two-piece dresses.

With heartfelt thanks to her entire family for their support during the creation of the new space, and most especially to her brother, Wes, for renovations, Kristina says an exuberant “bring on spring!”

How to Spice Up Your Wardrobe for Valentine’s Day

Let’s all be honest right now. This is a safe place, right? By the time my husband gets home from work, which is later because he’s a resident at Wake Forest, I am wearing either my pajamas or sweatpants and big old sweatshirt.

I love to dress up when I’m not at home, but by the time I get home… my standards have gone way down and it’s all about comfort.

I’m changing that for Valentine’s Day because my poor hubby only sees in my pajamas or sweats. We will be going out to eat for a little Valentine’s date and I’ll dress up then, but I’m also vowing to step up my at-home wardrobe, too.

For my date-night look, I usually wear a festive sweater dress with tights and high-heeled boots. Now that I’m pregnant, I may swap those high-heels for flats! I also love to rock a wrap dress because wrap dresses are oh-so-flattering and fun anytime I wear them.

Grant Dawson Living His Dream

BY CAROLYN S. PETERSON Every little boy who suits up with pads, a jersey and cleats, taking to the field to play football, shares a dream of one day being on a bigger stage. Perhaps that stage is a high school football field on any given Friday night with cheerleaders and a marching band at half-time, or a college stadium on Saturdays with proud parents in the stands and cheers from loyal fans. For Grant Dawson, his dreams started like any other little boy and came to a complete circle playing for Wake Forest University in the 2017 Belk Bowl.

Growing up in Winston-Salem, NC, Grant remembers always loving football and playing at an early age with the Forsyth Broncos, in the Pop Warner program. “I fell in love with football early on and began playing around age 8. I continued to play at Reagan High School in the linebacker position, and achieved All Conference and All Northwest Region my junior and senior years, finishing our season at 8-3. As a lifelong Wake Forest University fan, my dream was to play for Wake; I wanted to go where I would be given a shot to prove myself,” recalled Grant. However, the scholarships that came Grant’s way were to smaller Division II schools, not Division I or Division I-AA. After weighing his options and having several talks with his parents, Harry and Lisa Dawson, Grant, with his parents’ full support, decided to continue to chase his dreams where his heart was...at WFU. “If I was going to chase my dreams, I figured I would go all out and go all the way to play at Wake. I was very blessed that my parents, more than anything, wanted me to go for my dreams and supported and encouraged me to go to Wake. They said whatever I wanted to do they were behind me,” Grant said. With the decision made, Grant was a walk-on red shirt freshman at WFU, which came with its own challenges.

“To take the step from high school to college is a challenge in itself, but to have the added pressure of being a walk-on red shirt was something that gave me a sense of urgency. I felt like I had a lot to prove to myself and my coaches that I deserved to be here,” commented Grant. In the spring following his red shirt freshman year, WFU Coach Dave Clawson shared with Grant the requirements he would have to meet to become a scholarship player for the Deacons before the 2014 season.

“Coach Clawson originally told me what I needed to do before the season. I was in rotation and I was contributing on special teams and so I was hopeful he’d put me on. I kept my head down, stayed focused and accomplished all Coach Clawson told me I needed to do,” Grant said. After the season, Grant was called to Coach Clawson’s office for a meeting; no fanfare or production, just another part of Grant’s dream to come true...a scholarship.

Hearing the words, ‘Congratulations, you earned it,’ hit Grant harder than he thought it would.

“Even if I had hoped or anticipated getting a scholarship, I was at a loss for words. It really was a dream come true,” stated Grant. His five years at WFU came to a fitting end when, on his 23rd birthday, as a team captain and linebacker, the Deacons took the field at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC to play in the 2017 Belk Bowl against Texas A&M, with a win of 55-52. It was a game for not only Wake’s history books, but one that Grant is still trying to wrap his mind around.

“I don’t think it’s really hit me yet. I look back and it has been an amazing journey to say the least. Over the years, I’ve grown as a man and as a player; seeing our team come together for a great season and then to win the Belk Bowl, was something that’s hard to describe. It’s something that I will never forget,” Grant commented. With his degree in health and exercise science, the future is as bright for Grant as his years at WFU.

A Contemporary Women’s Clothing Boutique Like No Other

Located on the cusp of downtown Winston-Salem, Mellie & Emilia has become a well-known urban boutique within just one short year of being opened. During that time, owners Courtney Myers and Lauren Schneider have made sure to treat every customer who walks through the door like one of their friends.

The idea of owning a modern, upscale women’s boutique developed a little more than two years ago. After talking through their ideas and deciding on the logistics, Courtney and Lauren turned their words into actions and Mellie & Emilia officially opened on March 31, 2017.

“It was very much of a “do it now or we’ll always we wished had” moment and we decided to just go for it,” said Lauren.

With the support of their families, Lauren and Courtney designed the shop to be contemporary with a simple and clean layout and a focus on the merchandise. The boutique carries over 40 clothing and accessory lines, including locally made ACE Earrings, Cooper & Ella, Jenny Bird, and Unpublished Denim. Customers can find a wide selection of shirts, jackets, sweaters, dresses, skirts, pants, bags, wallets, and jewelry.

According to Lauren and Courtney, at Mellie & Emilia, you can find the latest trends and styles for women of all ages, from the 20 something to the 50 something.

In addition to keeping up to date with the latest in fashion, Mellie & Emilia is a strong supporter of featuring local products in the shop.

Courtney noted that they carry a line of jewelry and accessories from Raleigh and Charlotte artists, and love working with local artists on discovering new lines for their customers, who are in the forefront of everything Lauren and Courtney do.

A PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR EVERY CUSTOMER

“One of our main goals is for people to feel comfortable while shopping.

Sometimes you walk into other boutiques and the atmosphere is uptight with high pressured sales people. That is not us; we are very laid back and want people to feel like they are coming to shop while hanging out with their friends,” explained Lauren.

“Most of the pieces we purchase for the store are based on our styles and what we think customers will like,” shared Courtney. “Most of the time, Lauren and I shop with a person in mind because we like to get to know our customers.”

This personalization is shown in the duo’s shared passion for developing relationships with their customers. They encourage people to take their time, browsing and trying on the various clothing pieces and accessories.

“We try to find the brands you don’t see everywhere else. Courtney and I go to a New York show twice a year and they have over 1,000 vendors and labels. There we’ll see the trends that we’ll bring back to our customers,” Lauren said.

A LOVE FOR THEIR COMMUNITY

Both Courtney and Lauren have called Winston-Salem home for many years. They are involved in various community organizations and events. This commitment to helping others in their area has spilled over into Mellie & Emilia. Each month, the boutique features a local nonprofit and a portion of their sales are donated to that charity.

“We are fortunate to have been able to open the boutique and decided to give back to the community that supports us. Also, we wanted to support people who are supporting others,” explained Lauren.

“We’ve had customers come in and are ready for a new outfit or something to wear for a special dinner or just to wear during the day. Lauren and I will talk with the customer to see what colors they like, their style, what they are most comfortable in, etc. Then we’ll see what type of outfit they are looking for.

Sometimes people have no idea and we’ll help them think outside of the box to find the perfect look for them. Our goal is to have our customers trust us. We encourage you to try something on and we’ll be honest. If something doesn’t look good, we’ll tell you,” said Courtney.

“We’re not going to just sell you something to make a sale,” responded Lauren.

“If a customer doesn’t really know what they want, we’ll start pulling pieces that relate to a person’s style and go from there. People will surprise you with their choices.”

According to the friends, they encourage customers to take their time shopping, don’t rush, and let them see your outfit if you are unsure of how it looks.

“We have one customer who always comes into the boutique. She doesn’t always buy, but always asks us to be honest about a piece. We want customers to feel good about their shopping experience and feel as if they have friends in Lauren and me,” Courtney explained.

To help give customers a relaxed and pleasant shopping experience, Mellie & Emilia has a kids’ room. Inside, the room is filled with various toys, a little kitchen, train, comfy sofa, and a television. As moms themselves, Courtney and Lauren designed the room to be a place to entertain kids, while their mothers shopped.

“Customers hear about the kids’ room and love it. Sometimes it is hard to find the time to browse, and knowing moms can bring their kids and they’ll be occupied, makes all the difference. A few of our repeat customers bring their kids all the time to the room, while they hang out and look around the boutique,” stated Lauren.

In 2017, Mellie & Emilia worked with charities including The Enrichment Center, Bethesda Center, The Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network, Lillie’s Friends, and The Dragonfly House. So far, this year the shop has supported Imago Dei in January and are currently giving to Just Hope, Inc. “There is no certain way we choose a place. Sometimes the charities have a special connection to us or we have volunteered with them. Other times, places approach us. There are many places in the area and we want to help as many as we possibly can. The charities are always so grateful and we love building new relationships with people,” said Courtney.

Lauren added that they focus on creating meaningful relationships with nonprofits in the same way they focus on creating relationships with their customers. The boutique strives to not repeat the same charity within a two-year period.

Their charity of the month partnership isn’t the only way Courtney and Lauren engage with the community. The boutique also hosts various events throughout the year. They have held a grand opening, trunk shows, date nights and holiday styling, as well as, a sweat, sip, and shop event with local health expert, Momsanity. In addition, the team has thought of throwing a charity event. With a great space for events, they are always open to ideas.

“Lauren and I love to be social. Any time is a good time for a party,” joked Courtney.

Plans are already in the works for a big surprise to celebrate the boutique’s one year anniversary in March.

LIVING A DREAM

“This really is a dream come true! Getting to come here every day is pretty cool,” said Courtney.

The moment someone walks through the doors of Mellie & Emilia, they can easily see the passion of the owners and how much they are invested in their customers and boutique. With a commitment and desire to build relationships with their customers and their community, and with always being on the lookout for the latest trends and unique pieces, owners Lauren and Courtney are on the right track for a bright future for Mellie & Emilia.

“We’ve had the vision and gone from talking about it to making the idea a reality. That is just rewarding in itself. Then, getting to meet new people, listening to their stories, watching the interactions between customers of all ages makes the experience of owning the boutique so fun and enjoyable,” Lauren added.

“This Black Girl Ain’t Running Nowhere”

“Being a nurse for 36 years, the whole experience was pretty surreal,” shares JoAnn Burnette, a Winston-Salem resident and Patient Experience Advisor at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. “I tripped when I was coming off the elevator at work and they decided to check my blood pressure. It was 190/110. That was when I knew I had to get my blood pressure under control.”

“I had lived in denial of my high blood pressure,” JoAnn says. “How could this really be the silent killer when I don’t really feel bad?” She had been diagnosed with high blood pressure in her early 40s, was on three blood pressure medications and they were about to add a fourth. Her mother fought hypertension later in her life and JoAnn had to focus on managing her sodium and her blood pressure during her pregnancies. Over the years, she tried to think about her blood pressure, but she was inconsistent with her diet and with her workouts.

“I knew I was on a slippery slope. My blood pressure was so high. I was tired all the time and didn’t even have energy to play with my grandkids,” shares JoAnn. About two and a half years ago, all of that changed. She started her journey by saying, “This black girl ain’t running nowhere!” “My friend Linda Harris was part of Black Girls Run. She invited me out and one Tuesday afternoon, I joined her.

I was instantly addicted,” smiles JoAnn. She started out walking and then began running. “I had never been an athlete, but I loved the freedom of running. It made me feel like I was really taking back control of my own health,” says JoAnn. “The women in Black Girls Run are truly a community committed to living a healthier lifestyle and they made it possible for me to make a healthy change.”

After getting her running shoes on, JoAnn hasn’t stopped. She has now completed five half marathons and just finished her first full marathon right after her 65th birthday. She dedicated her first marathon to her sister, Bonnie, who recently passed away, and her friend, Frankye Burke, who is a breast cancer survivor.

She also got consistent with her diet.

As JoAnn notes, “You can’t run off a bad diet.” She focuses on lean meats and lots of fruits and vegetables.

Instead of trying to keep that New Year’s resolution going, make a year-long resolution to find a healthy physical activity that you can get addicted to. JoAnn’s love of running and her consistent diet and exercise have helped her to finally manage her blood pressure.

Now she is only on a half of one blood pressure medication and she has a whole new perspective on the road that lies ahead of her.

“I’m in a good place now,” shares JoAnn. “I have lost over 60 pounds and am the healthiest that I have been in a long time. I feel better both physically and emotionally. Now I have the energy to really participate with my family and friends.”

“My change would not have been possible without my strong faith in God and this community of encouraging, supportive and health-minded women,” says JoAnn. “It doesn’t matter what your age is, you can make a change. Now, I feel blessed to be able to inspire others to make healthier choices and lead healthier lifestyles.”

Novant Health and the American Heart Association have joined together to focus on making a community impact in the blood pressure of Forsyth County residents this year. Pulling Rabbits Out of Hats

Moving several times since I married my husband has provided me the opportunity to redesign our ‘things’…. many times. I have always said, “It doesn’t matter where we live, I can make it home.” We have lived in a trailer for a short period of time, a furnished apartment, three unfurnished apartments, a historic old house, a previously owned house and a few new houses. I’m sure my family would say, “Yes, mom made it home wherever we hung our hats.”

Using what you have in a new place, or in the place you are now, takes some creativity.

I might call this The Art of Creative Seeing. Each time I get the opportunity to do an Interior Redesign, I get to do just that. I love it! Using my clients’ things and taking into consideration the architectural layout, the use and the function of the room, I create a room that is visually pleasing and inviting. Sometimes I call The Art of Creative Seeing, “pulling rabbits out of a hat.” This is when I go back to my training and reduce things to size, color, shape and texture....and think, “Can this be used in another way?” Abracadabra....lots of rabbits!

A Boss Lady on a Mission for God:

ANITA DEAN ARNETTE

Every weekday from noon to 3:00 pm, listeners of “The Light” radio station can hear the voice of Anita “Boss Lady” Dean Arnette come through their speakers. During this time, Arnette tells stories, creates conversation with the callers, and worships in music with them. However, becoming a part of the “The Light” radio station family was a career she didn’t plan on having.

“I was in secular music for about 25 years and I didn’t want to work at a gospel station. I thought I was really doing a great thing and that I was really making my “mark in the community.” Little did I know this was not the plan God had for me. He was just preparing me for bigger and better things. God had spoken to me that if I trusted Him and believed in Him, my life would change for the better. Great things would happen,” stated Anita.

According to Anita, she had a dream that one day she would be on television, in magazines and newspapers. She knew God would elevate her to greater things.

“All those things have He planned for me have come true and much more. Everything is about God’s timing, not ours. I had the faith and I believed everything about that dream,” reflected Anita.

In 2000, Anita started working in sales and promotions at Truth Broadcasting, “The Light” radio station. By the next year, she was hosting the “Sunday Morning Praise” show and in 2013, her “Midday Gospel Praise” show debuted.

“I don’t write anything from the shows and just let God speak through me. Also, all the songs I play have messages in them. I just let go and let God,” said Anita.

Anita’s show philosophy has impacted many of her listeners. She hears stories all the time about how her messages and songs reached

someone in some way. In addition, Anita makes sure everyone knows that nothing is too hard for God, and that she understands the challenges you are facing. She has experienced domestic violence, loss of hope, financial burdens, health issues, and a remarriage.

“Every day I’m on the air with people from the Triad and other cities.

I listen to stories of people who have no hope, people who have lost a loved one, or are hurting. You hurt, I hurt and I cry with them. God brought me to this station with a purpose. He already knew the plans to encourage others. I made it out of my situations and you can, too” explained Anita.

On a mission for the Lord, Anita plans to use 2018 as the time to continue spreading God’s message of hope. She wants to encourage others to trust God and have faith. Anita credits God for opening the doors to share this lesson with the community through her Christmas Toy Drive, Thanksgiving Giveaway, and Mother’s Day Dinner. Also, she makes sure everyone she meets knows this story of how faith, hope, and love can change your life.

“God never gave up on me and He has ordained me to carry out His plan. There is only one God and He is black, white, green, whatever, and He is always available to people who believe,” commented Anita.

Anita is devoted to her family. She is married to Reverend Jerry Arnette and they attend Morning Star Baptist Church. They are the proud parents of five children: Tonya, Darnell, Jennifer, Rachel and Jeremy.

They also have six grandchildren: Danielle, Derrell, Jadyn, Jordyn, R.J., and Bryson.

Flexibility

I believe that living a truly healthy lifestyle isn’t possible without a great deal of flexibility. This applies to nutrition, exercise and much more. And no, I am not referring to physical flexibility, though that is definitely important and something to practice!

(Perhaps a future B.E. Healthy topic?) This kind of flexibility is more of an anti-perfection lifestyle approach.

NUTRITION FLEXIBILITY

Let’s face it, having a “perfect” diet 100% of the time is not going to happen. There will always be birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, vacations and celebrations of all sorts. The way I see it, you have two options: 1. Never celebrate a holiday or birthday ever again (ha!).

2. Learn to be flexible during these times. Enjoy yourself and make a healthier choice for the next meal or the next day.

I don’t know about you, but I think the second option sounds a bit more appealing and sustainable long term. Not to mention, how miserable would life be without celebrations?

Contrary to belief, you aren’t going to gain a ton of weight by enjoying one awesome birthday dinner or having an extra dessert on Valentine’s Day. This weight is typically gained by back-to-back-toback overindulgent choices.

Maybe you celebrate your birthday a few days early with co-workers and that birthday “celebration” continues for the next week with several unhealthy choices each day.

EXERCISE FLEXIBILITY

Working out 4-6 days a week is great! But is it going to happen every single week?

Absolutely not. Let’s look at a scenario and a few options of how to handle it.

You work out in the evenings and have a busy week ahead – an after-hours business meeting one evening and a birthday dinner for a friend another night. So you are missing HALF of your workouts for the week!

Option A: Say forget it and skip your workouts for the rest of the week, too. Why bother?!

Option B: Go into panic mode. Give your friend a lame excuse as to why you can’t make her birthday dinner. Now at least you are only missing ONE workout this week.

Option C: Enjoy your work event, enjoy your friend’s birthday dinner and go to your two workouts the other two nights of the week you didn’t have conflicts. If you have time, maybe you squeeze in a morning workout or a quick at-home workout one day this week and, if you don’t, no worries! It’s not the end of the world.

It seems silly when you read it like this; option C is the obvious choice to be made here!

However, it can be a challenge to make this your reality. I have been guilty of choosing option A and (embarrassingly) option B as well.

If you have been dedicated to working out (or training if you read last months BE Healthy!), I can assure you that missing a few workouts here and there is not going to undo all of your hard work. The only way all that hard work can be undone is by skipping workouts for weeks at a time –especially when you combine that with lots of unhealthy nutrition decisions.

Bottom line? Do the best you can with your nutrition choices and with your training, and know that achieving perfection isn’t going to happen. Striving for perfection is exhausting (trust me, I know!) and your efforts can better be spent enjoying life with a flexibility mindset.

Will You Be My “Single” Valentine?

Happy “Single Awareness Day”?? For plenty of single women, Valentine’s Day is a day filled with those “hmmph, must be nice” moments. Well, here’s how to enjoy the holiday as a single!

have a Netflix marathon with your favorite meal…or ice cream! Please don’t neglect to show yourself some love on this day because if you don’t love yourself, no one else will.

FIRST, AVOID SOCIAL MEDIA.

Despite what the media or society says, being single can be a good thing.

That’s right, I said it! What do you think are some blessings that come along with your singlehood? Here are a few items to spill onto your list: learning to love yourself; growing closer to God and finding spiritual fulfillment; learning the will for your life; gaining confidence in yourself, and gaining independence and strength. Feel free to add anything else to your list! This can change your mood and turn your day around.

If it pains you as a single woman to see lovey-dovey couples spattered all over your Instagram feed, it’s probably best to stay away from social media. If you need to, temporarily delete your social apps for up to three days: the day before Valentine’s Day, the day of, and the day after (because it’s likely that some of those day-old photos are still showing up on your feed!). As Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” So guard your heart!

ROUND UP YOUR SINGLE GIRLFRIENDS FOR A “SINGLE LADIES’ NIGHT OUT!”

You can still go out and enjoy yourselves on a day that favors couples. What is something you and your girlfriends like to do? Some good ideas for fun include going out to see a movie, eating out for dinner, going on a road trip, a shopping trip, or a spa day. Go downtown to see what’s poppin’! Or, if going out is not your thing, try having a “girls’ night in.” Your experience will be more enjoyable with single friends who you can relate to. Perhaps one of them will see the brighter side of singleness and end up encouraging you? Or maybe some of you will end up meeting someone special? Either way, spending time with your single friends, whether at home or out and about, will be a memorable experience filled with love.

SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY.

With family, you often find an abundance of love, laughs, and a creation of new memories. Make plans for a family Valentine’s Day outing! Go out to a nice restaurant, but not one that’s too pricey (NOTE: there will be crowds on Love Day!). See what good movies are playing. Have a Valentine’s lunch date with your sister, mother, grandmother, and/or your daughter. They will appreciate it! And when you’re out spotting all the loving hand-holding couples, just remember that no matter who you are with, you are surrounded by LOVE! Just be encouraged that if it is God’s will for your life, He will bless you with the one you are meant to spend the rest of your life with at the perfect time.

TREAT YOURSELF.

Some people believe in buying cards, flowers, candies, and gifts for themselves on Valentine’s Day. If that’s your way to bounce, go for it! Whatever makes you feel loved and satisfied, indulge in it (that is, without overindulging)!

Treat yourself to a manicure/pedicure, have a personal spa day, either at home or in local spots, eat at your favorite restaurant, or, if you like to keep it simple, stay at home and

The Delicious History of Famous Candies

Did you know that 58 million pounds of chocolate will be purchased the week of Valentine’s Day? What about the fact that 47.5% of people give candy on February 14, making it the most popular gift given?

Sounds like a majority of the people in the world have a sweet tooth. Also, everyone has their own favorite candy, especially this time of the year. Some of the more popular treats for Valentine’s Day are Hershey’s kisses, Sweethearts Conversation Hearts, and Lindt Swiss Chocolate. These delicious candies worked their ways into people’s hearts and mouths and have notable histories to go with them. Do you know the story behind your favorite sweet tweet?

HERSHEY’S KISSES

When you have a grandfather from Hershey, Pennsylvania (like I do), you quickly become a lover of all Hershey’s chocolate. The classic milk chocolate Hershey’s Kiss was introduced in 1907. According to historians, it is believed that the candy’s name comes from the sound and motion the machine made while dropping the chocolate, supposedly resembling a kiss. At first, the kisses were hand-wrapped in their famous aluminum foil, but by 1921, a machine would take over this job. Also in 1921, the plume (the white paper tail at the top of the kiss) was added. Three years later Milton S. Hershey received the registered trademark for the plume and in 1976, the kiss was officially trademarked for the foil wrapper.

Today, Hershey’s Kisses remain one of the most popular candies in the United States and more than 60 million kisses are produced daily at the company’s two factories. In addition, the original milk chocolate formula is still used. However, this isn’t the only “flavor” of kisses available. Variations include milk chocolate with almonds, kisses filled with caramel, special dark chocolate, cherry cordial, mint truffle, hugs, candy cane, and cookies and crème. In the international arena, creamy milk chocolate and creamy milk chocolate with almonds can be found in Europe, and hazelnut and green tea can be purchased in Asia. Lastly, the foil wrapper and paper plume also change styles and colors for different seasons. This started in 1962 when the first Hershey’s Kisses wrappers went red and green, as well as silver, for the holidays. In 2016, four limited Hershey themed wrappers were released.

These included Santa hats, Kissmas sweaters that resembled knit Christmas sweaters, Kissmas trees with plumes that said “Fa La” and Kissmas presents with plumes that stated, “from me to you.” Candy canes were another popular design for Christmas kisses.

SWEETHEARTS CONVERSATION HEARTS

At least once in their lives, most people have been gifted the traditional Sweethearts Conversation Hearts at Valentine’s Day. These heart-shaped confections share messages to your loved ones, such as “Hug Me” and “Be Mine” and were started by the candy company, Necco. The company was founded in 1847 by Oliver Chase and was famous for inventing devices that granulated sugar and cut candy lozenges. First, Necco sold a similar treat, but in scallop shaped shells. The messages were written on colored paper and placed inside the candy. In 1861, Chase’s brother created a machine that use red vegetable dye to stamp the sweets.

The loveable heart shaped we know today came into being in the early 20th century. Designs for the candies had changed from shells, baseballs, and horseshoes to finally hearts.

The original mottos for Sweethearts Conversation Hearts were “Be Mine,” “Be True,” and “Kiss Me.” These phrases debuted in 1902 and have been used ever since then. Over time, other messages have appeared and disappeared. They have reflected a certain catchphrase of the year or decade, or were geared towards a theme. However, no matter what tiny motto is on the heart, people will still give them to their loved ones. In fact, more than eight billion are sold in the six weeks leading up to February 14th.

LINDT SWISS CHOCOLATE

We can thank Zurich, Germany for the creation of Lindt Swiss Chocolate. In 1845, confectioner David Sprungli-Schwarz and his son Rudolf SprungliAmmann began using a new recipe from Italy to make chocolate in their shop in the Martgasse of Zurich’s Old Town. The two soon became known for their sweets and, in 1899, they attracted the attention of notable chocolate maker, Rodolphe Lindt. Just 20 years before, Lindt had invented the “conche,” a technique to melt chocolate.

The Sprunglis and Lindt soon combined their two businesses and founded the company with the shortened name of Lindt & Sprungli. Throughout the next decades, the chocolate makers expanded and, in 1915, exported treats to 20 different nations in the world.

One of their most famous recipes, the Lindor, originated in 1949. The Lindor recipe is commonly used for the company’s truffles and has a chocolate shell around a smooth filling. About forty years later, another classic recipe, Lindt Excellence, was introduced. This is a gourmet chocolate created out of the finest cocoa beans. Today, Lindt & Sprungli is mainly referred to as Lindt and is sold internationally.

DO THE NEW BLOOD PRESSURE GUIDELINES IMPACT YOU? In October 2017, about 70 million American adults (29%) had high blood pressure—that’s 1 in every 3 American adults at that time. That statistic just increased to nearly 50% of all Americans with the publication of new high blood pressure guidelines as of November 2017. With the announcement of these new guidelines, more than 30 million adults with a systolic blood pressure (the top number) of 130 to 139, or a diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) of 80 to 89, got a new diagnosis of stage 1 hypertension. For people who fall into the stage 1 category, medication isn’t recommended unless you’ve already had a heart attack or a stroke, or you’re very likely to have one because you do or have things that raise your odds of having them, like smoking or diabetes. At this early stage of high blood pressure, people need to address lifestyle changes to try and lower blood pressure to more normal levels, versus adding a medication to their health routine.

Advice found in an article published on WebMD stated that, “People should not neglect the importance of what they can do to control their blood pressure,” says Steve Nissen, MD, chairman of the department of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. This article also mentioned that the most effective ways to lower blood pressure

are to lose weight and to follow a diet that’s low in sodium and higher in potassium from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains called the DASH diet. “Obesity is very, very closely tied to increased blood pressure,” says Nissen.

These new guidelines, at 130/80 mm Hg rather than 140/90, were developed by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. They account for complications that can occur at lower numbers and to allow for earlier intervention. The greatest impact of the new definition is expected among younger people. Additionally, the prevalence of high blood pressure is expected to triple among men under age 45 and double among women under 45.

Blood pressure categories in the new guideline are: • Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg; • Elevated: Systolic between 120-129 and diastolic less than 80; • Stage 1: Systolic between 130-139 or diastolic between 80-89; • Stage 2: Systolic at least 140 or diastolic at least 90 mm Hg; • Hypertensive crisis: Systolic over 180 and/ or diastolic over 120, with patients needing prompt changes in medication if there

are no other indications of problems, or immediate hospitalization if there are signs of organ damage.

So women under 45 years of age, who were previously considered to have normal blood pressure should pay attention to these new guidelines and consult their doctors about beginning to make changes to their health before requiring medication. This includes limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, and regular exercise, which can each lower blood pressure by 4-5 points. If followed closely, the DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, lowers blood pressure by about 11 points. This diet stresses limiting sodium, eating more fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fruit. In addition, the guidelines stress the importance of using proper technique to measure blood pressure; recommend use of home blood pressure monitoring using validated devices; and highlight the value of appropriate training of health care providers to reveal “white-coat hypertension.”

Making lifestyle changes now can help prevent the complications from high blood pressure, such as a heart attack or stroke later.

Who doesn’t love a man who cooks? Even better, how about 23 of them all in the same room serving up their favorite dish?

The third annual Men Who Cook is a fiery cooking competition to please your palate and raise much-needed funds for families in need. The annual signature event for the Family House in Winston-Salem welcomes locally recognized men as they take on the role of celebrity chef on Saturday, March 18, at Bridger Field House.

They will prepare and present their culinary delights in a food festival setting as a truly delicious way to celebrate and support the Family House as it provides affordable lodging and support services for adult patients and their caregivers who travel to Winston-Salem for medical treatment.

“We have some incredibly talented culinary artists in our community. You will never know these are not professional chefs,” said Kathy Carr, executive director of SECU Family House. “We are so thankful for the men and their sous chefs that dedicate their time, talents and love of food to help us raise money. It’s certainly an event not to miss.”

Opened in 2011, the 45-room Family House is truly ‘more than just a place to stay.’ Patients and their families coming to Winston-Salem for out-of-town medical care have an affordable, comfortable alternative to a hospital waiting room or an expensive hotel to lay their heads at night. The House staff provides friendship and support for adult patients and caregivers who have been referred by Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter.

“Knowing that I had a safe, comfortable and affordable place to sleep at night that wasn’t far from the hospital was huge,” said Holly Bautista, recent Family House guest.

“Not only that, but it provided peace of

mind for my husband as he was recovering.

Having a friendly face to greet me and listen to me was also a big deal. There were days that it was hard to hold it together and having friendly staff was instrumental in keeping me sane.”

The Family House has hosted folks from 94 North Carolina counties and 38 states, and over 27,000 patients since opening.

For guests unable to afford the nominal overnight fee, a Family House assistance fund is available, thanks to donations and events like Men Who Cook. Last year’s event was a huge success, netting more than $130,000.

Amateur chefs scheduled for the evening include a faith leaders, a fire chief and a football coach. Wake Forest Football Coach Dave Clawson, Winston-Salem Fire Chief Trey Mayo, and Priest Steve Rice from St. Timothy’s Episcopal partnered with Rabbi Mark Cohn from Temple Immanuel will participate, along with numerous other talented local amateur chefs and their sous chefs.

A sampling of dishes on the menu are Mayo’s smoked saltwater white perch spread, Clawson’s Deacon Turkey Sliders, spaghetti ala Allegacy from Paul Phillips, Allegacy Federal Credit Union, and barbecue from returning winners David Barksdale, First Reliance Bank, and John Millican, Salem Group.

Three judges’ prizes and a people’s choice will be awarded to winning chefs. Early online voting for the People’s Choice award is available now at familyhousews.org.

Perfect Party Dips

If you’re anything like me, at parties you gravitate towards any sort of cheesy, delicious dip. I’m sharing three of my favorite party dips that are sure to be a crowd pleaser. They all start with 8 ounces of cream cheese, so you know they will be decadent and oh-sogood. Also, I promise I won’t tell if you make these dips just for yourself!

CHEESE LOVER DIP

• 1 8oz package of cream cheese • ¼ cup mayo • 1 cup sour cream • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated • 1 small can of green chilies • 4 oz bacon, crumbled • 1 package of dry ranch seasoning mix Combine everything together in a bowl and place in refrigerator for 2 hours. Serve with crackers and enjoy!

WARM CRAB DIP

• 1 8oz package of cream cheese • 1 cup mayo • 2 teaspoons Old Bay Seasoning • 1 pound lump crabmeat • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine everything except the cheddar cheese. Place in shallow baking dish. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese on top. Bake for 30 minutes.

Serve with crackers.

BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP

• 1 8oz package of cream cheese • 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded • ½ cup buffalo wing sauce • ½ cup ranch or blue cheese dressing • 2 cups Colby Jack cheese, shredded • French bread baguette for serving Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread cheese on the bottom of a baking dish, top with chicken, wing sauce, and dressing. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until heated through.

Serve with toasted baguette slices.

Classic and beautiful are two interchangeable words to describe hardwood flooring. Contemporary or modern in style, the grand appearance continues to be a preference among homeowners. From hardwoods to engineered wood flooring, the difficulty of scratches, gouges, and dents are common problems, which result in the taxing and expensive process of sanding and recoating or replacing boards.

If you have dogs and children and do not want to rely on throw and area rugs, or runners, then, the solution is an alternative material with greater toughness, sustainability, and beauty: bamboo.

ECO-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVE

Standing in the forests are hardwood oak, ash and maple trees that we usually think of as the prime material for a beautiful floor. But while it takes up to 50 years to regenerate one hardwood tree, the bamboo plant, on the other hand, is a renewable, ecofriendly alternative that can mature in a mere seven years. We often associate bamboo with its light coloring, resembling a blonde hue, but carbonized bamboo can give this wood a deep, rich, dark coloring. The application of carbonizing increases the darker shades, giving homeowners the option of a wide-range of colors and styles. Additionally, natural bamboo has twice the strength of a red oak.

HOW IT’S MADE

After aging for five years, the outer shell is removed, and the stalk is cut into thin, lengthy strips. Sugars and starches are removed, reducing its appeal to termites, and decreasing the likelihood of expansions and contractions due to moisture changes. Beyond boiling, the bamboo can retain its natural color, or it can be carbonized through a “steam pressured carbonization process.” Carbonization also prevents the bamboo from fading or losing its rich coloring.

The bamboo is then kiln dried to remove moisture.

The dried strips are processed to create horizontal or vertical planks, or woven together, termed “strand woven” and glued together by a man-made adhesive.

A UV light is then used to cure the planks. Installation systems come in two forms: tongue and groove, or adhered together and nailed to the floor.

FACTORS IN BUYING QUALITY BAMBOO

In considering which bamboo flooring system to purchase, it is important to check the ends of the boards to ensure no gaps are present among the layers. This will indicate the quality of the bamboo planks. In addition:

• The finish of the surface should also be smooth and have a uniform texture.

• Be cautious of significantly lower prices. Some manufacturers will use bamboo which is premature in age, and will result in high levels of formaldehyde during the gluing process.

Being knowledgeable as you shop will help you to identify quality bamboo flooring at first glance.

FACTS ABOUT BAMBOO

The Janka Hardness Scale rating has become the standard to determine whether a material is suitable for flooring material. The strandwoven bamboo rates upwards of 3,200, a much higher range than traditional wood flooring; for instance, the red oak measures at 1,300. Bamboo has outperformed even a few of the toughest natural materials, such as steel alloys, concrete, and graphite, and homes made from bamboo have endured earthquakes measuring 9.0.

POSITIVES ATTRIBUTES

Bamboo floors, whether traditional, strandwoven or carbonized, appear similar in grain and style to hardwood; yet, the floors will endure a child who enjoys throwing their metal toys on the floor or the chase of two dogs from the living room to the other end of the house. With a pad installed underneath the bamboo planks, parents will be surprised at the lack of noise coming from the upstairs. And, with only a mop and mild soap, bamboo floors are easy to maintain.

Perhaps, bamboo flooring may be the perfect option for your home and lifestyle.

Black “HairStory! ”

In honor of Black History Month, I wanted to share some historical gems on some of the most popular hairstyles worn among the black women of today and yesteryear.

BRAIDS

This beautifully intricate hairstyle originated back in Africa. African women have been adorning their crowns ever since 3500 B.C.! This style started with the Himba people of Nambia.

Braids were very popular and necessary among many African tribes because the braid patterns indicated one’s tribe, wealth, marital status, power, and religion. Because braids take so long to install and perfect, it was a social practice back then and is still a social practice today!

Many women would take this time to socialize and build connections with one another. This African tradition began with elders braiding their daughters’ hair, then the daughters would learn from their elders and practice on their friends’ hair. This was soon passed down generation to generation. It wasn’t until the 1990s when “box” braids—individual braids created with hair extensions—became popularized around the world.

INTERESTING FACT: Box braids were likely worn by wealthy African women. Because box braids took so long to install—between 4 to 8 hours—it is believed that women who could afford the extensions and the hours of installation was a wealthy woman indeed! Women adorned their box braids with cowrie shells, jewels, and beads to appear wealthy and alluring to their mate.

AFROS

Afros grew out strong and proud around the end of the 1950s. This beautifully distinctive hairstyle rose in popularity and attracted diverse reactions from the public when some young black

dancers and jazz singers were proudly sporting it. One of the main reasons these famous young black women wore afros was to show support for the civil rights movement. They also felt that their unstraightened tresses expressed racial pride. Pretty soon, young black college students began showing their support for the movement and embraced their racial pride as well. Afros reached their peak in popularity and influence during the late 1960s and early 1970s. This was an outward expression of black pride, a rebellion against European beauty standards, and a stand against racial injustice.

INTERESTING FACTS: It is apparent that afros have made their return to the mainstream world within the past few years. This return became known as the natural hair movement. Afros are still a rising hairstyle as more and more black women—young and mature—are ditching hair relaxers which chemically straighten hair, and embracing their God-given texture. Just like in the earlier decades, this movement represents a stand against European beauty standards and a stand for racial pride. Today, most women with afros are modernizing them, wearing them as twist-outs (putting hair in twostrand twists and, the next day, taking those twists down and fluffing the hair out into a style), braid-outs, and bantu-knot outs.

DREADLOCKS

Dreadlocks were first seen back in 2500 B.C. The Biblical figure known as Samson was known for his long locks that gave him exceptional strength to overcome his foes.

It’s noteworthy that people of different faiths back then felt that combing their hair was a show of vanity and otherworldly things, so long locks represented something deeply spiritual.

In the 1970s, locks became more popular with the help of singer Bob Marley. Because Marley was from Jamaica, many people associated dreadlocks with this Caribbean island. In fact, in Jamaica locks were seen as a way of living instead of vanity. Rastafarians grow their hair as a way of paying homage to Samson. To them, dreadlocks represent strength and inner power. Rastafarians also wore locks to go against societal norms and to send a message of difference and strength.

Regardless of race and culture, our hair is a personal crown of who we are and our heritage. So, keep that crown beautiful and taken care of, just the way God gave it to you!

Five Important Tips Every Woman Should Know

Almost every day, we read or hear a story about a woman getting attacked and assaulted. According to research, assault on women is a common crime, because many assailants assume women are more passive and won’t fight back. However, there is one way to change the facts and statistics. One of the most important things a woman should know is self-defense and how to protect themselves in case they are in a horrible situation. Don’t know where to start? Read below for five important tips.

1. HAVE A PLAN:

A woman will always hope that she will never get into a situation where she needs to protect herself from violence. But, if it does occur, be prepared and have a plan on what moves and actions you should take. Create and practice your steps at self-defense classes or even with videos online. There are many martial arts studios, gyms, and personal trainers who offer self-defense classes. In fact, some communities hold events for women, at no charge, to learn the various moves. You don’t have to take a full class to know what to do. Finding self-defense moves on Google and YouTube will give you the basics. Also, part of your plan should be mentally preparing yourself if an attack should happen.

2. BE ALERT:

If you are alone in a public place, especially at night or on vacation, be smart and pay attention to your surroundings. Put down your cell phone and anything else that takes away your attention. If you think someone is following you, cross the street or step into a crowded place, such as a store or restaurant.

Attackers usually will give off clear signals that they want to harm you. Most don’t begin with brutal force. Instead, they try coaxing into secluded areas, using excessive charm to manipulate you, refusing to accept rejection, and giving unsolicited help while expecting something in return, whatever makes the victim give up control.

3. FOLLOW YOUR SIXTH SENSE:

Also known as intuition, human beings are born with survival instincts, such as fight or flight. You are built with the ability to use your judgment and not to brush off your gut feelings. Trust your intuition and learn the differences between real fear and worry.

If you ever feel as if something isn’t right, don’t second guess yourself. It is better to be safe than sorry. Get help immediately.

4. KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS AND WHERE TO HIT:

You know when you accidently push someone with your elbow or get hit with theirs, how bad it hurts? Well, that is because your elbow is the strongest point on your body and your best weapon. If you are close enough to your attacker, use your elbow to push them away and go for the four weakest points: eyes, throat, groin, and knees. If you are pulled to the ground, kick your attacker with your legs in one of the four spots. Grabbed at the waist from behind, pinch the person hard under their arm, in the triceps, or in the upper inner thigh. In these spots, muscle can be easily pulled away from the bone, creating more pain, giving the victim time to get away. Similar to your elbow, the knee is a powerful tool and can be utilized wherever the attacker is in relation to you. Kick the inside of your attacker’s knee and they’ll immediately fall to the ground.

5. BEING CHOKED? USE THIS MOVE:

The choke defense is good to use if you are smaller than the attacker. If you are being choked, don’t try to grasp their hands and pull them from your neck. Instead, form your hands into a “C” shape, with your thumbs beside your pointer fingers, and try to pull your attacker’s thumbs away. Try to kick them at the same time, as well. Once you managed to disengage the attacker’s thumbs, you’ll have time to fight back.

Remember you only have 3 to 8 seconds before you start to lose oxygen and pass out.

Don’t be afraid to fight. Be confident in what you have learned from self-defense.

Deyth Banger once made the statement, “Listening to a podcast, reading a book, listening to an audiobook and watching films isn’t waste of time. It’s how somebody becomes wise!” Although there is truth in that comment, it is more a good picture of where we are as a society and where we turn to grow intellectually and to be entertained.

Podcasts have become a staple for learning more about the world around us, and it’s an avenue that is only growing. This month in For Your Listening Pleasure, we feature a local podcast that focuses on films and the fans who can’t get enough.

The Wreak Havoc Film Buff’s Broadcast is a bi-weekly podcast produced by Wreak Havoc Productions, LLC., a local film production company. The podcast is hosted by the owners and operators of Wreak Havoc, Dan Sellers and Sammie Cassell. The company has, for the past few years, been responsible for the Wreak Havoc Horror Film Festival held in Greensboro annually. With their obvious affection for film, the owners decided to expand their company and add podcasting to their resume.

“It really started with filmmaking. I began making movies about five years ago and created my own production company, Wreak Havoc Productions. My co-host Sammie Cassell acted in my first film, Hank vs. The Undead, and soon after became my producing partner. We were in the middle of production on our second feature film, Sammie the Comic Book Man when we decided to get into podcasting. Sammie and I were spending a lot of time together riding to locations and shooting, and ultimately, being the film buffs we are, we would find ourselves talking in depth about our favorite movies.

We’re also both avid podcast consumers and love the medium. The idea to turn our conversations into a podcast sort of seemed like a natural progression,” says Dan Sellers, president of Wreak Havoc Productions.

“The Wreak Havoc Film Buffs Podcast is a show for Sammie and me to talk about the movies that we love. Often, we discuss a film that we’re both fond of, and sometimes we talk about films that only mean something to one of us, challenging the other to broaden their horizons. It’s not a movie review show, and we don’t talk about movies we hate. If we’re discussing a film, at least one of us really likes the film.

We frequently have guests on the show as well, and they’re usually other filmmakers, actors, or other local personalities. Our podcast is for any movie lover to listen to every episode or just cherry pick the films they like, too. We really reach out to the NC film community though by featuring guests with whom we’ve collaborated or whose work we admire. It’s also an opportunity for filmmakers to come on and plug their projects, to ask for funds or promote an event,” Sellers continues.

One of the challenges of the podcast market is keeping the product new and original, and Sellers is certainly cognizant of this task. “There’s a million movie-talk podcasts out there. This podcast is hosted by two fledgling filmmakers who run a small production company. So our perspective is that of people who adore movies and make them. Also, we were able to get an interview with the actor Stephen Tobolowsky to talk about the film Memento. He was such

a pleasure to talk with and was very generous with his time. More recently we’ve spoken with B horror movie stars Felissa Rose about Sleepaway Camp and Ryan Lambert about The Monster Squad. Having these really cool people talk to us about their films has been a real joy,” Sellers adds.

Another important aspect is its importance to the community and Sellers is quick to point out something else that makes the show unique.

“I think it’s relevant to the Triad area because we often talk about upcoming screenings, film festivals, and even film productions in the area that either we’re involved with or other local filmmakers are involved with. If someone in the Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem area is wanting to get involved in filmmaking as a hobby or career, this is certainly the show to listen to,” he concludes.

Wreak Havoc Productions’ podcast is undoubtedly a labor of love, but it is also a unique addition to the local podcast scene. With a thriving arts community, it is a welcoming product that promotes another art form that deserves its place in the WinstonSalem and Triad arts scene: film.

Movies have always had the ability to not only entertain us, but also to teach and unite us. It is a powerful medium, and with their production company and podcast, Sellers and Cassell hope to wreak even more havoc on the local film scene.

ACCENTS What do you hear?

Do you find yourself noticing when someone has an accent around you? Does an accent grab your attention and leave you wanting to hear more? You’re not alone. Those who have some sort of ‘specialness’ about their voice fascinate many of us. And, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a foreign accent; it can just be one from another part of the country.

We sometimes attribute characteristics to an accent whether there’s any validity to it or not. For instance, according to numerous references, a British accent tends to be linked to sophistication, elegance, and graciousness. As Piers Morgan stated, “There is a certain advantage to the British accent. I do notice that Americans love it; they think that we Brits are smarter than perhaps we are.” Is it any wonder that Eliza in My Fair Lady wanted to learn to speak ‘proper English’ so she could work in a shop. There are, as we know, many variations of the King’s English – the proper English, the Cockney accent that Eliza so wanted rid of, and then there’s Ozzie Osbourne.

Someone shared that his voice is one of the choices for GPS directions. Oh, my – imagine trying to drive and understand what he’s mumbling.

Even the movie currently in theaters, Darkest Hour Hour,

has Churchill muttering to the point his secretary could not follow his dictation.

And, lest we forget, ‘Bond. James Bond.’ Sean Connery with his gravelly Scottish brogue and Pierce Brosnan with the Irish lilt to his voice come to mind first. Whether Scottish or Irish, they both fall under Her Majesty’s Service as Bond. Scotty of the original Star Trek was forever fretting about those lithium crystals with his Scottish inflections.

Is a strong, commanding accent something that gets your attention? Perhaps a German, Austrian, Dutch, or South African accent grabs your ear. All have somewhat strong, authoritative enunciations. Could you envision anyone else as the Terminator other than Arnold Schwarzenegger? Who else could carry off lines like, ‘I’ll be baaack’ or ‘Hasta la vista, baby’ while emphasizing each and every letter.

What about an Australian accent? Who comes to mind immediately? Depending on your generation, it’s probably either Crocodile Dundee, Mel Gibson, or one of the Hemsworth brothers (Chris or Liam, aka Gale or Thor). Dundee’s line in the film as he confronts a mugger is classic, ‘That’s not a knife.

That’s a knife.’ He’s the first character that comes to my mind when hearing an Australian accent.

How about the language of romance? Ah, the streets of Paris, the city of Rome, the Tuscan vineyards. Yes, French or Italian accents make most think of romance, perhaps mystery, or intrigue. Sophia Loren, Maurice Chevalier, or Charles Boyer come to mind.

Certainly, there are so many accents to explore. A Caribbean accent that evokes a laidback, ‘No problem, mon’ attitude, the lilting beauty of the Thai language in which tones are of such importance, and more.

Even more fascinating are those who can switch languages in midstream. I have several friends who switch from English to Spanish within a blink of an eye or from English to French or Italian in the same sentence.

And then there’s our accent – the Southern accent. According to Jessica Simpson, “I think anything sounds good with a southern accent.” On the other hand, Jeff Foxworthy shares, “I used to say that whenever people heard my Southern accent, they always wanted to deduct 100 IQ points.” He’s built quite a career using his Southern drawl so I’m not so sure about deducting those point. Do you find yourself talking slower than you normally do when you’re in other parts of the country where the speech pattern is much faster, as something of a counterbalance?

Catching a hint of an accent is a good icebreaker in a social setting. Enjoy the beauty of languages we run across every day; maybe consider taking a class to pick up some conversational knowledge.

Heather Bell Adams is a native of North Carolina. Originally from the Hendersonville area, she and her family now reside in Raleigh. She is a graduate of Duke University and the Duke University School of Law. She has won numerous awards for her short stories, including the 2016 James Still Fiction prize, the 2017 Carrie McCray Memorial Literacy Award, and the 2017 Emerging Author Fellowship at the Laughing Heart Literary Festival. Her work has been published in the Deep South Magazine, The Thomas Wolfe Review, Broad River Review, and many more.

Believing in the Moon: A Gardener’s Lost Knowledge

Sought after for light and direction, and often to simply gaze at fondly, our brilliant and beautiful moon has been a compass to sailors, and also provided naturalists, scientists, farmers and gardeners a way to connect its phases to the tides and weather patterns, so that seeds become thriving plants. In this more technologically advanced world, some may call “moon planting” nothing more than a silly wives’ tale, but research and countless studies have shown many effects of the moon’s systematic orbit. Seeing is believing!

LUNAR GRAVITY

The sailors were not the only ones who studied the constellations. Based on written records, farmers claimed particular crops thrived when the moon passed through a specific constellation. And, as the moonlight entered the new and second quarter moon, a noticeable growth was observed, termed the leaf growth period. Scientific studies confirm particular plants required more moisture in the soil to germinate. We can connect this concept to the height of tides. During the new moon, lunar gravity forces the water to rise. While we can clearly see the effects of the phenomenon in the ocean, it is also linked to the soil. Studies have proved that during the first quarter moon, seeds are more likely to swell and burst open.

By the second quarter moon, leaf growth appears. (For gardeners, this is an amazing fact. Not only are seeds germinating faster, but they gain a boost of vitality and health based on the moon’s position.) In a time of observation, study, and diligent journaling, the “cutting-edge technology” of moon gardening is still an important practice, today!

THE KNOWLEDGE LASTING CENTURIES

If you have ever wondered why a crop did not germinate or produce fruit,

several factors may have been the cause. Most often the question, “Was it planted at the right time?” arises? With this information, gardeners can begin to alter their planting season with more know-how instead of just hope and faith.

First Quarter: The new moon is in a waxing phase. The first two quarters reveal an increasing larger moon and light. (It is important to know each quarter lasts seven days.) Begin planting above ground annual crops such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumber, lettuce, and spinach.

Second Quarter: Leading up to the full moon, plant above-ground seed crops such as beans, watermelons, squash and tomatoes.

Third Quarter (The third quarter begins after the moon is full. As the light begins to decrease, it becomes a “waning” moon. At the end of the fourth quarter, the cycle starts over.)

The Waning Moon is best suited for root crops, defined as vegetables which grow below the ground. Examples are beets, rutabaga, and turnips, potatoes and sweet potatoes (tubers), and garlic, onions, and shallots (bulbs).

Perennial flowers that grow from bulbs such as cannas, daylilies, and lilies should also be planted. * Farmers have indicated thankfulness to the waning moon during the last freeze of the season.

As temperatures dipped below 28 degrees

while fruit trees are in bloom, the freeze causes little damage to the season’s apple and peach trees.

Fourth Quarter: Leading up to the new moon, termed “the dark of the moon,” this is a time to focus on gardening maintenance; tilling and cutting timber, mowing and pruning, and weeding. Avoid planting until the new lunar cycle begins.

TRADITION

Yes, we could pound a nail into the northern side of the orchard to bring a larger yield at harvest, or plant hot peppers when our disposition is fiery and boiling. Superstitions are wonderful motivators; yet, the outcomes are highly unlikely. Planting by the moon, however, is a worthwhile investment of time.

Why We Need Skilled Trade Workers

There’s a natural life path people have been following for years to be successful: college, college, college, college-based job. Often now, this path is seen as the only way to be successful. You must traditionally academically educate yourself for a corporation or service.

English, math, science, history, and the variations of these core teachings are vital to success. It’s the way it is now in 2018: corporate or homeless. Except it’s really not.

At the moment, the world does primarily cultivate young doctors, lawyers, marketers, and traditional university-endorsed degree jobs, but the world is changing. Youtubers make millions of dollars every day. People with steady jobs get laid off. People who go to college don’t use their college degrees. This natural and safe path of life has been uprooted drastically, to say the least. While the world will always need doctors, lawyers, marketers, and traditional university-endorsed degree jobs, the world also needs artists, youtubers, skilled trade workers, and occupations that are not always supported or encouraged.

The fact is that many of our trade workers, our carpenters, electricians, welders, painters, industrial designers, etc. are growing older.

In 2012, according to EMSI and Forbes Magazine, 53 percent of skilled-trade workers in the U.S. were 45 years and older. Nearly 19 percent were between the ages of 55 and 64. Typically, people retire and get replaced in the workforce. A doctor retires, there are more doctors. Everything is okay. However, people are not replacing the skilled-trade workers. The number of trained workers is just gradually decreasing.

This is bad news because we need skilled trade workers. You can’t outsource electricians overseas. Factory operators can’t supervise via Facetime. They have to be here. In person.

Circling back to this idea about college success, no one is telling young high schoolers that they don’t need to be a doctor, even if they were the valedictorian of their class, to earn an income to support the means they wish to live by. The only thing preached is further education, which is not a bad idea, just not holistically explained.

Skilled trade workers undergo training and education. They may be required to take courses and gain certifications, it’s just different.

They take apprenticeships and the required courses to gain their own certification, just like a doctor or teacher gains the required certification for a bachelor’s or doctorate’s degree. It all boils down to what qualifications are required for a job. For skilled trade workers, this is not college always, but it is further education. The first step in solving this shortage is to explain that skilled trade workers are very valuable and to encourage these jobs as a post-high school option.

People want to be sure that they can live an expensive life if they choose. No one wants to worry about money. Skilled trade workers have a stigma about being underpaid, which does contribute to the lack of young people rushing to fill these jobs.

Just as a comparison, to show the invalidity of this, the average journalist can make about $40,000 a year, varying depending on experience and location. Often times this is not the case. A journalist may start out even as low as $20,000 a year. The average carpenter can make $45,000 a year; again experience, talent, and location can increase or decrease this number. The only difference is training: words or wood.

We need skilled trade workers. To fill this need, we need young people to understand that being a skilled trade worker has just as many benefits as a college degree does. There are still insurance plans and 401K matches available. These jobs just have different training, maybe different hours, maybe even better hours. The shortage is here.

And so is the need.

Elizabeth Dimmette Coyne is a woman of many talents: graphic designer, writer and the owner of S2dio (pronounced “Studio”). S2dio covers Elizabeth’s many creative enterprises, both personal and professional, including art direction, graphic design, writing, publishing, various applied arts, and at one time, a mobile art supply store. She is a graduate of NC State School of Design and lives in Winston-Salem with her husband, John Coyne, and their two children, Ella and August. Her first published book of poetry is entitled, The Ella Zoo.

Dolls are illustrated on front side only. Each rosy cheek is drawn by hand. A coordinating calico print fabric is used for the back. Local Design Students Polish a Historic Gem

Every semester, student designers from UNCG’s Interior Architecture program design interior spaces ranging from commercial, to healthcare facilities, to residential and hospital projects, often collaborating with industry and community partners.

However, it is rare for students to see their design reach the installation phase in a residential setting, as will be the case with the Julian Price Show House in Greensboro’s historic Fisher Park neighborhood. This preservation design project brings together local designers throughout the city to renovate a historic icon with proceeds from the ticket sales of tours benefiting the Preservation Greensboro organization.

The next step in our process will be assessing all the offerings of the vendors we have so far and selecting items that meet the size and style requirements of our design plans,” says junior Tyson Cole.

“We’re very excited to debut our design in April,” says Cole. “We think it will be the most gratifying end to any project we’ve had so far.”

The students are led by UNCG’s Interior Architecture professor and Department Head, Khoi Vo. “This show house is an invaluable opportunity for our students to gain first-hand experience in design and construction management of a historic renovation,” said Vo. To those designers working on the Julian Price Show House, the home is simply known as Hillside House. Built in 1929, Hillside was the dream home and vision of local insurance CEO and philanthropist Julian Price. Today the home has been purchased by a private couple and will be part of a designer show house event, organized by Preservation Greensboro.

Eight student fellows from UNCG Interior Architecture’s Center for Community-Engaged Design will be tackling the in-law suite in what was formerly the servants’ quarters of the home. The new owners have requested that the space fulfill many functions—housing the in-laws while they are in town, while also serving as an informal family room, complete with wet bar. With these requirements in mind, the students began their design work in September of last year, coming up with a design concept and mood boards for their initial vision. The concept for their space centers around the Danish concept of hygge, which roughly translates as cozy.

“A lot of people are familiar with the implications of coziness that we all associate with hygge,” says senior Bailey Chu, “but few are aware of the deeper tenets of hygge, which emphasize family, presence of mind and togetherness. We are using hygge as a mental cue for the kinds of selections we will make, and ultimately the space will serve as a restorative getaway.”

After getting the go-ahead from the clients to move forward with the design concept, the students are now working with sponsors to provide everything from custom cabinet solutions to lighting and furniture.

Wilsonart has agreed to provide hard surface solutions while Surya will provide rugs, task lighting and accessories. The students have

Diane Faison: The Spirit of Harriet Tubman

“Born as a slave in the 1820s, Harriet Tubman’s life is marked by a fearless determination to change the world. And that change was worth putting her life at risk at least 19 times as she traveled up and down the Underground Railroad, helping to free slaves, including her own parents.”

For those who have seen Diane’s performance, her passion for Harriet Tubman’s legacy shines. For 55 minutes, Diane adjusts each performance for the audience. “I never wrote a script,” said Diane. “Though I’ve performed ‘The Spirit of Harriet Tubman’ well over 300 times, I decided to base my performance on the true method of story-sharing by African Americans of yesteryear. They didn’t write their stories; they told their stories. I am a traditional storyteller.”

Diane continued, “It’s a legacy like hers that resonated with me as a woman who stood up for my own rights during the Civil Rights movement of the ‘60s! How well I remember putting my own safety on the backburner because I knew the value of fighting for equality! I knew I was marching for something bigger than myself and that if I could help make a difference, it would be for the greater good of people everywhere.”

Writers’ Rituals

Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club and freelance journalist, has a unique process related to revising his novels. “My only writing ritual is to shave my head bald between writing the first and second drafts of a book. If I can throw away all my hair, then I have the freedom to trash any part of the book on the next rewrite.” Clearly, he’s on a mission when it comes to revisions.

Victor Hugo preferred to stand at his desk writing; Hemingway wrote standing as well. Interesting, since standing desks have gained popularity and are touted as a ‘new’ office concept. Who knew it was practiced years ago? Hugo also wrote in the nude and at times had his valet hide his clothes so that he could not leave his home. That’s certainly taking goal setting to an extreme.

Writing is a solitary activity. Many writers, over time, develop their own style or ritual of getting down to writing.

It’s not particularly easy to describe how you sit down to face a blank page/screen and begin to write. There’s a popular pie chart that crops up occasionally on social media with the percent of time writers spend on getting ready to write – the bulk of which is preparing or wandering around the idea of writing – checking websites, personal e-mails, research – and finally a sliver of a slice spent on actually writing. Obviously an extreme illustration, but funny because writers do some of those things (albeit in smaller sections). This led me to wonder about the writing rituals of well-known writers.

“Anything that keeps you happy and writing is part of my writing ritual,” according to British novelist, Neil Gaiman. “I like music, so I tend to have it playing in the background.”

Ernest Hemingway’s writing habits seem more in tune with the pie chart concept. He is quoted as defining his writing style as, “long periods of thinking, with short periods of writing.” Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games series, shared similar thoughts. “Some days all I do is stare at the wall. That can be productive if you’re working out character and plot problems. The rest of the time, I walk around with the story slipping in and out of my thoughts.”

Jack London, author of The Call of the Wild and others, took a decidedly direct approach to his writing, “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.”

In contrast to standing writers, James Joyce preferred to write while lying in bed. Truman Capote described himself as a ‘horizontal author’ due to his need to write reclined in bed or on a sofa.

Writing in a solitary space is preferred by many writers.

“One constant writing ritual, no matter what I’m writing is that I cannot write if people are around me,” explained young adult novelist Jennifer Armentrout. Mark Twain did not like being disturbed when writing; he typically had breakfast and then wrote all day, uninterrupted, until dinner. Leo Tolstoy took his need for writing solitude seriously; he locked his doors to ensure privacy. Stephenie Meyer, of Twilight fame, is considered a very private person and writes in her home office. Maya Angelou would book a hotel room and request that all artwork be removed to eliminate distractions while she wrote.

Some writers have a word count or a number of hours devoted to writing to achieve each day.

Stephen King writes daily and has a personal goal of 2,000 words per day. George Orwell typically wrote about four hours per day.

Jack London wrote 1,000 words per day.

Whether a ritual to get started or a daily habit to be followed, writers have their own special ways of getting the words in their heads to print for the rest of us to enjoy. Enjoy your favorite writer’s work and the back-story of their creative process.

The 2018 Winter Olympics: To PyeongChang, South Korea We Go

On Friday, February 9th, athletes from around the world will come together for the opening ceremony of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, more commonly referred to as the 2018 Winter Olympics. For the next 17 days, 90 countries will compete in over 100 events in 15 different sports, and will celebrate international camaraderie and sportsmanship, while promoting a sense of peace throughout the world.

As a matter of fact, the official symbol of the games is five interlocking colored rings, representing the continents of North and South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia.

If you are like me, you might wish you were a pro in a winter or summer sport every two years when the Olympics are held. However, my athletic abilities are far from extraordinary. To satisfy my love for the Olympics, I learn all that I can about the games’ history, sports involved, and more.

Read below to test your Olympic Winter Games knowledge, as well!

HISTORY OF THE OLYMPICS

According to historians, the Olympic Games date back to 776 B.C. in ancient Greece. The games were used as a tribute to the Olympian gods and took place in Olympia, which is known in Greek mythology as the island of Pelops. The city’s central part was decorated with a temple of Zeus and a temple of Hera. The Olympic Games had a religious connection to the cult of Zeus and took place during the Olympiad, the four-year period between the competitions. The games were used in religious festivals held in honor of the god and aimed to show off the physical qualities of the competitors. For the next 12 centuries, the Olympic Games were continued in Olympia until

The Olympic Games were revived almost 1,500 years later by Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France. Coubertin wanted to increase awareness about physical education and had the idea to design a modern version of the Olympic Games. His inspiration came after visiting the site of ancient Olympia. In November 1892, the Baron discussed his plans of using the games as an international athletic competition to be held every four years at a Union des Sports Athletiques meeting in Paris. However, it wasn’t until two years later, he received the approval to found the International Olympic Committee. The committee still stands today and serves as the governing body of the games.

The first official modern Olympic Games took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Over 60,000 spectators and 280 participants from 13 nations competed in 43 events. The popularity of the games took over after the VIII Games in 1924 in Paris. Over 3,000 athletes from 44 nations competed and the first closing ceremony was held. Another huge moment in Olympic Games history also occurred in 1924, with the debut of the Winter Olympics.

FACTS ABOUT THE XXIII OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES

PyeongChang was selected to be the host of the 2018 games back in July 2011. The last time Korea hosted the Olympic Games was in 1988 with the Seoul Games. There are five key objectives to the competitions: cultural games, environmental games, games for peace, economic games, and ICT (information and communication technologies) games. Together, these goals associate the games’ slogan: Passion. Connected. According to the official website of the Olympic Games, this phrase was created with the purpose of promoting “a world in which everyone is connected with shared passion for winter sports; a world open to any generation anywhere, anytime, to open new horizons in the continued growth of winter sports.” In addition, PyeongChang’s emblem symbolizes an open world and uses the images of ice and snow to portray the winter sports and athletes throughout the various countries.

As for the mascot of the Olympic Games, its name is Soohorang and it is based on the white tiger. This animal is considered Korea’s guardian animal and “Sooho” in Korean means protection. “Rang” comes from “Ho-rang-i,” which means tiger and is in “Jeong-seonA-ri-rang,” a traditional folk song about the Gangwon Province, the location in PyeongChang where the games will take place.

Together, this mascot portrays a sense of protection to the athletes, spectators, and attendees.

SPORTING EVENTS

All of the Olympic Games sports are divided into three categories: snow sports, ice sports, and sliding sports. Some highlights of this year’s games include over 100 gold medals that will be awarded and six new sports that are offered. These sports are Snowboard Big Air (men and women), Speed Skating Mass Start (men and women), Curling Mixed Doubles, and Alpine Skiing Team Events. Other favorite sports that are returning this year are: Snow Sports: Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, and Snowboarding.

Ice Sports: Short Track Speed Skating, Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, and Curling.

SLIDING SPORTS: BOBSLEIGH, LUGE, AND SKELTON.

• The Reynolda Rotary Club meets on a weekly basis every Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 pm with a featured speaker for each session. All luncheons are held at the Forsyth Country Club and begin and end promptly to accommodate work schedules.

“Our members enjoy the service and friendships formed,” explained Holly Marion, President of Reynolda Rotary Club. “There are opportunities for all members to develop leadership skills, connect with the business/ professional community, build friendships, and create new contacts/network in the community.” Holly shared that the current club has approximately 82 members, comprised of individuals of all ages, including retirees and active professionals from a variety of businesses in the area.

Members are encouraged to get as involved as they want in the service projects that are of interest to them. There are a wide range of committees and projects available such as projects for Cook Elementary School, Community Outreach (select a service project), or Bell Ringer for The Salvation Army. In addition, there are social events planned throughout the year at restaurants around town for getting to know members in a more relaxed, unstructured environment.

Upcoming Reynolda Rotary Club projects of interest include: • Book Fair at Cook Elementary (February 27 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm)– The book fair utilizes funds raised for the school library; children use play money to purchase books with Rotary member volunteers helping them select their books. Donations are welcome -- contact Lynn Ebert (336.758.5412).

In addition to the book fair, the Club provides food for school children via the backpack program on weekends.

• Camp Scholarships: Children attend Camp Hanes as a result of fund-raising efforts. On average, 25 kids per year enjoy the YMCA Camp Hanes experience via scholarship thanks to the efforts of club members.

• Big House Gaines Golf Tournament (June dates TBD): Enjoy playing golf as a participant or sponsor and support Reynolda Rotary Club’s scholarship program. Currently, three former students from Cook Elementary are furthering their education via this program. Check the website for exact dates.

Animals Who Provide Fiber

Fiber crafts are, as a general rule, solitary hobbies. But depending on the complexity of a project, you may be comfortable working away while visiting with friends and family. One of the most fun, social activities about working with fiber is going to fiber festivals. They’re offered all over the country and are usually weekend events filled with vendors, demonstrations, classes, and the animals who donate their fiber for our creative pleasure.

There are such a rich variety of animals to visit at these events that it’s like a fiber rich petting zoo.

They, like the fiber they provide, have such diverse characteristics.

Angora rabbits are so fluffy that it’s hard to imagine they’re real – they look so much like an overstuffed toy. Soft doesn’t begin to describe their fur. There are different types of angora rabbits (English, French, Giant, and Satin). Like most rabbits, they eat a lot. It’s necessary for them to eat large amounts of hay so that they can digest all the fur they eat while grooming themselves.

They can be domesticated as pets, enjoy the company of their owners and get along fairly well with cats.

Since their fur doesn’t fall out, they must be sheared about every three months.

At one time, France was the leader in raising Angora rabbits; however, now most come from China, Argentina, or Chile. Angora fiber is often blended with other fibers and is considered one of the warmest fibers.

Sheep come in 200 different breeds and are abundant worldwide with over one billion estimated. They’re probably the first animal thought of in terms of yarns. Typically, sheep are shorn once annually with twothirds of their fiber used in clothing and the remainder used for warmth, such as blankets.

Sheep are social animals with strong following instincts, even to their demise. The old saying, ‘Would you jump off a cliff if your friend did?’ applies to sheep. Most experts recommend that herds consist of at least five sheep. With keen hearing, they’re are easily startled and may harm themselves in their quest to get away.

Goats are considered highly intelligent, curious animals.

Like sheep, companionship is an important characteristic and owning more than one is encouraged. Each breed of goat has its own traits; however, most all are considered escape artists.

One expert recommended that owners not let their goats observe how the gates or enclosures were opened because left to their own devices, the goats practice and learn how to get out.

The fiber from a Kashmir goat is considered rare and quite expensive. To make one average sized jacket requires fiber from six Kashmir goats.

Llamas, another herding animal, also crave companionship. They are intelligent and make fairly good pets. They have a certain look about them that make them interesting to watch – a little aloof perhaps. If you listen, they’re probably humming; that’s how they communicate. One negative is that they do spit, which is not an attractive trait and usually done to show dominance, to discipline other llamas, or if they feel threatened.

The Incas domesticated alpacas long ago and their fiber was reserved for the nobility. Their fur is considered hypoallergenic and is also flame/water resistant.

With about 22 variations of colors and shades, there’s little need to dye alpaca fiber. Like llamas, alpacas also hum to communicate.

They can be crossbred with llamas to produce offspring known as huarizo, valued for their long fleece.

These are some of the most wellknown of the animals that provide fiber. They’re also entertainers, watching sheep and goats play and jump on and over everything in their path can put a smile on anyone’s face. Llamas and alpacas are somewhat exotic and interesting to watch, just as they seem to be watching us. All in all, it’s a win-win situation. Check the web for fiber fairs in your area and enjoy the show and the animals that make those fibers possible.

Lessons from Laura:

What We Can Learn From The Little House on the Prairie

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7th, 1867, and she died on February 10, 1957. Her claim to fame were her books, “The Little House on the Prairie” series. The popularity of her books was amplified by the television series of the same name, which ran for nine years (1974 – 1983).

While “The Little House on the Prairie” books are considered children’s books, the author (and main character) was a strong, determined, fearless woman. As her life began and ended in February, it seemed an opportune time to step away from the complexities of our fast-paced modern lives and take a look at the lessons we can learn from a simple girl who lived on The Little House on the Prairie.

LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS (1932)

Laura’s earliest memories, when she was only four years old, include the details of the life of a farmer. Working from sunup to sundown was a family-affair, and even as a toddler, she had her share of responsibilities.

The Lesson: We have to teach our children early on how to help around the house. We may have the convenience of the local grocery store for our food, but that doesn’t mean that a younger child can’t help prepare the meal the family will enjoy.

FARMER BOY (1933)

Farmer Boy is the story of Laura’s future husband, Almanzo.

As the youngest child, Almanzo experiences growing pains of having to wait for what he wants most: a horse of his very own. Throughout the book, we are given a glimpse into the life of a nine-year-old boy from upstate New York, as he grows with each new challenge.

The Lesson: Patience. When we get what we want right away, often, we’re disappointed or quickly lose interest.

When we wait, we value the object of our desire even more, and we’re more willing to invest in it and demonstrate more care than we would have if we obtain it easily.

LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE (1935)

When Pa decided to move the family from Wisconsin to Kansas, life took on a whole new set of challenges. Included in the story are details about building a house from the ground up to learning about people who are different (Native Americans the Ingalls family encountered).

The Lesson: Don’t be afraid to try something new, or be open to those who are different than you are.

ON THE BANKS OF PLUM CREEK (1937)

The Ingalls family is on the move again, this time to Minnesota. Laura was between the ages of seven and nine during this book, and it was the first time she attended school. The family faced various hardships, including locusts and fear for Pa when he was lost in a blizzard for four days.

The Lesson: So much of this book is wrapped up in hope. Despite their hardships, the family stuck together, knowing they were stronger with each other than they were alone.

BY THE SHORES OF SILVER LAKE (1939)

The Ingalls family moves to South Dakota, in the hopes of a new start after several difficult years, including the disease that caused Mary’s blindness (it is written that it was caused by scarlet fever, though that is debated among modern medical professionals). Through this book, we begin to see Laura transition from a child to a young adult.

The Lesson: There’s always an opportunity for a new start. Challenges and obstacles are a part of life, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make changes.

THE LONG WINTER (1940)

The winter of 1880 brought blizzard after blizzard to the South Dakota territory, eventually interrupting, then halting, train service which brought goods and food to the area. Almanzo and a friend make an appearance, bringing wheat to the desolate town, despite the winter storms.

The Lesson: Think beyond yourself and your own well-being. This true story demonstrates the impact a selfless act can have on others – even an entire town.

LITTLE TOWN ON THE PRAIRIE (1941)

The Ingalls family have all worked together to not only create a home but also to give Mary the opportunity to go to college. In addition to helping fund her older sister’s education, Laura earns her first teaching certificate, and Almanzo begins making regular appearances.

The Lesson: Family takes care of family. Period. Laura could have hoarded her hard-earned money for herself, but she gave it away so her sister could have what she needed.

THESE HAPPY GOLDEN YEARS (1943)

At only 15-years-old, Laura is invited to teach her first school, and finds herself in a miserable position, with a hateful woman with whom she must board throughout the school term. Almanzo comes to her rescue and week after week, drives 24 miles roundtrip to take her home on the weekends. After her assignment is finished, Almanzo begins to pursue the relationship in earnest, despite Laura’s initial misgivings about him.

The Lesson: Finish what you start, even under difficult circumstances. And don’t be fooled by first impressions.

Understanding the Opioid Epidemic

Within the past several months, many people have heard and read stories about the opioid epidemic that has, sadly, become commonplace in the news. According to The New York Times article “The Opioid Epidemic: A Crisis Years in the Making,” the United States is currently facing “the deadliest drug crisis in American history.” It is so horrible that on Thursday, October 26th, 2017, the federal government declared the opioid crisis to be a public health emergency.

THE STATISTICS

It is estimated that the number of drug deaths in 2017 was more than 66,000, which is 2,000 more than the number of deaths in 2016 and almost 12,000 more than the deaths in 2015.

Out of the 2017 deaths, 66% involved opioids. Looking at these statistics means opioids killed more people than breast cancer last year. Currently, over 145 Americans die every day. Robert Anderson, the CDC’s Chief of Mortality Statistics, compares the opioid overdoses to the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV epidemic in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Breaking down the data even further, there was a 19% increase in drug deaths among teens ages 15 to 19 from 2016 to 2017.

Again, many of these deaths included opioids. However, the National Center for Health Statistics have found many of the overdoses were unintentional and involved prescribed painkillers, such as oxycodone. Because of this, more awareness has been given to prescription narcotics. Yet, the largest increase was in the ages 30 to 44. There was a 21% jump in only one year. Another fact is that more males become addicted to opioids than females.

The opioid epidemic can be attributed to several factors. Listed in the President’s Commission on Combatting Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, some of the contributors are: • Pain Patient Advocacy: There has been a push for managing pain through the use of opioids. Patients in pain and some physicians have advocated for the usage.

• The Opioid Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Supply Chain Industry: The pharmaceutical industry plays greatly into how a nation responds to certain drugs, thanks to clever marketing and promotion.

• Rogue Pharmacies and Unethical Physician Prescribing: Always know where your prescriptions are coming from, in terms of credited and legitimate physicians and pharmacies.

• Lack of Patient Education: Many patients and their families aren’t completely informed on their medicines and whether or not opioids are included. Always read the prescription’s insert before taking. The three most common prescriptions with opioids are Vicodin, OxyContin, and morphine.

THE SYMPTOMS

It is important to be aware of the symptoms of opioid overdose.

Some symptoms include: • Confusion or delirium • Frequent vomiting • Pinpoint pupils • Extreme fatigue or the inability to wake up • Loss of consciousness • Slowed or irregular breathing • Respiratory arrest (the person is not breathing) • Cold, clammy skin • Bluish skin around the lips or under the fingernails.

The American Addiction Center’s website states “depressed breathing is the most dangerous side effect of opioid overdose.” This means a lack of oxygen to the brain can cause permanent damage and organ failure.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

There are several ways anyone can help with the opioid crisis.

• If you suspect someone taking a prescription painkiller has gone into overdose, call 911 immediately. While waiting for help to arrive, roll the person onto their side, to prevent choking if they vomit while unconscious. If they are conscious, keep them awake and talking. Never leave the person alone or asleep.

• If you or someone you know struggles with opioid addiction, consider getting assistance through an addiction rehabilitation program. These programs will provide medical insight, care, and education on withdrawal, its symptoms, and how to not give in to cravings. In addition, these programs will help create a plan to manage daily life after leaving the center. For more information, visit: americanaddictioncenters.org.

• If you aren’t directly affected by opioid addiction, you can still help raise awareness and public education on the epidemic.

Provide people with information on where they can get help, appropriate places to get prescriptions, how to manage pain, and how to become aware on whether or not a person is addicted to a drug. Also, consider ways to give support to those addicted and their families.

The opioid epidemic is increasingly becoming worse with every passing day in our country. More people are becoming addicted and, unfortunately, overdosing. However, together, we can work towards reversing the statistics and giving assistance to those suffering. We can all hope that by the end of 2018, the opioid crisis will be on its way to being eradicated.

BUDGET BZZZZZ The Mystery of Sales

S.A.L.E. I love hearing and reading the word “sale,” because I know where there’s a sale, there is money to be saved. However, when it comes to finding deals in stores, it is important to understand the fine print.

Sometimes, an item on sale ends up costing you the same amount, if not more, as the regularly priced item.

Back in December, I read an article from The Washington Post titled “Why the money-conscious should beware the after-Christmas sale.” Writer Michelle Singletary states, “We have been brainwashed to see a sale as a thrilling event. It’s not. We’ve been bamboozled.” Later in the article, she says that the problem with sales is that we often don’t know whether or not the sale is truly a discount. As an example, two weeks before Christmas I noticed an item was “on sale” at the grocery store. Then, the week before Christmas, the same item was “on sale” again, but with a higher price.

Why? Because retailers know you are going to pay the higher sale price, without noticing last week’s price, and still believe you have saved money.

The end of the article gives readers a challenge, which is the same challenge I’m going to give you: be careful when it comes to sales and, before you fork over money, know whether or not it is actually going to put more money into your wallet. How do you do that?

• As with any form of budgeting, it is important to plan and scope out the deals and sales ahead of time. It is also imperative to do the math and know the product’s regular price and exactly how much you’ll be saving with the purported sale. Retailers use psychological tricks to make shoppers think the closer it is to the holidays or on major sale days, such as Black Friday, the better the deal a person is getting. go any lower?” Think about what day you are shopping. Is it near a major holiday or sale day? If so, the answer is probably no and you should buy the item now. Is it an out of season purchase, such as Christmas wrapping paper at the beginning of January? It might decrease. This is the beauty of paying attention to apps to help you shop.

• Another psychological trick that fools people is the “left-digit effect” or the difference of one cent in price.

For example, more consumers will buy something if it is priced $x.99, instead of a whole number. In a 2009 study, researchers at Colorado State University and Washington State University ask participates to analyze two identical pens. The only variation between the two was their price – one was $2.00 and the other was $3.99. The study’s results showed that 44% of the participants chose the higher-priced pen, because they only noticed the 99 cents and not an even number.

• Watch out for bulk bargains. There are times when items are placed on sale, but with a maximum limit.

Research has found that having a limit makes sales jump, even if there is no discount. A person’s mind and the store’s marketing department cons one into thinking the product is on sale. So, the next time, ask if

the “2 for $4” means if you are only purchasing one is it only $2.00 or regular price.

• Lastly, notice the placement of certain items in a store. Normally, half-priced, pick-up purchases are at the entrance, because they get customers shopping immediately after walking into the shop. These products are known as “open-thewallet” items and are displayed in an elaborate and random design. During the holidays, retailers began this ploy as early as October and hope it keeps consumers purchasing into November and December. Continue walking into the store if you are looking for the real deals. In addition, look at the position of products. For example, many stores will put two very similar, but different in price, items side by side, in hopes people will purchase the higher priced item.

Be aware of the “compromise price effect” and look at the price tags.

Also, keep in mind the quality of a product. Just because it is the lowest price or on sale, is it durable? Will it last a long time? Sometimes it pays off in the end to spend a little extra on quality purchases.

Shopping for items on sale is a great way to put extra cash in your wallet.

However, it is important to shop smart and know whether or not the sale is actually worth it.

Depending on what you might have heard or read online, a 40-plus woman doesn’t need special techniques or tricks to begin dating after a long-term relationship. Keep it simple! What worked at 25 is what will work at 40 and beyond – you just have to remember that you are not only a ‘catch’ but are worthy of a good relationship, so don’t settle!

With somewhere between 40-50% of marriages ending in divorce, it’s safe to say that there are quite a few women ‘of a certain age,’ as it is said, looking to find that special someone. There’s a shift in your 40s and beyond to not necessarily ‘needing’ a man, but ‘wanting’ one.

Fulfilling careers, raising children and good friends are our priorities, but the right man can enrich your life. Whether you go on blind dates, use internet dating sites or bump into someone in the frozen food aisle at the grocery store, there are certain tips to help you find a man who values you.

WHEN YOU’RE OVER 40, YOU’RE PRETTY COMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN

When you hit about 30, you have your beliefs well established and you know what you like and what you don’t. If smoking or drinking bothers you, make sure you take that into consideration when you meet someone. Don’t excuse behavior that you know is going to be an issue in the future. Invest time in those that you share not only beliefs with, but behaviors, too. If you are looking on dating sites, be specific in your profile preferences. Don’t be wishy-washy – you know what you want, so go for it! More importantly, you know what you deserve, so go for quality in dating, not quantity!

WHEN YOU’RE OVER 40, YOU KNOW A LOT MORE ABOUT THE NATURE OF ATTRACTION

You’re of the age where you are mature enough to know that sometimes men are like Christmas presents – you can have a beautifully wrapped box with a gorgeous bow and when you open it there’s a socket wrench set. Pretty packaging doesn’t always mean it’s beneficial or healthy for you. Sometimes the knight in shining armor isn’t the one you want… the knight with dings and dents in his armor has lived, been hurt and still is willing to love. The guy who can sit down, turn off the TV and the electronics that monopolize our lives today and talk about his life’s journey, and actually listen to you when you share your hurts, is the guy to look for. If you meet a guy and he incessantly talks about himself, never asking your opinion or letting you share in the discussion…. move on, my friend!

WHEN YOU’RE OVER 40, YOU KNOW HOW MUCH BAGGAGE YOU HAVE AND WHAT YOU CAN TAKE

When a man is newly separated or fresh from a divorce, beware, especially if they have been in a long-term relationship. They aren’t at the same place you are, emotionally or spiritually, so don’t expect them to be. A man ‘back on the market,’ in my personal experience, can see the world as full of women at his disposal.

Hurting you is probably not at the top of his list of concerns, but it should be at the top of yours, so guard your heart. Know your value and worth…you are worth more than being a man’s stepping stone back into the dating scene. Women tend to put their hearts into a relationship before a man does, so protect your heart. I can’t say that enough.

Ask yourself how much baggage you are willing to take on in a new relationship.

It’s not judgmental to know that you want to be a priority to a man, so if the guy you meet has small children that demand attention, as they should, then you need to recognize that, and if it’s a problem, move on.

Remember, whether you or your possible new interest has kids, they didn’t ask to be in this situation, so their well-being comes before your love life.

WHEN YOU’RE OVER 40, YOU MAY REALIZE THAT MARRIAGE ISN’T FOR YOU

We all know couples who are happily married, some for many years, but we also have those friends who compromised their lives and happiness because they didn’t want to be alone. When you are good with who you see in the mirror every day, you won’t settle for something not that special in order to overcome what you think is a lonely life. Remember, you can be in a relationship and be alone and lonely, or you can get to know yourself better during the time you are alone. When your friends go above and beyond in trying to hook you up with a man, don’t take it negatively and think they believe your life is empty without a mate. As I recently read, ‘it’s only human for people to want to feel validated in their own life decisions by seeing you reflect them with your own.’

At the end of the day, you know yourself better than anyone, so treat your heart with care and make sure any man you meet does the same.

Realize that, as a ‘woman of a certain age,’ you’ve had life experiences, you’ve been there, done that, probably more times than you want to admit, so know you are valuable and you have worth. Don’t sell yourself short ever again!

Something smells yummy coming from the kitchen. There it is! A bowl of pinto beans that have been simmering all day, topped with a mound of freshly chopped onions, along with a slab of warm-from-the-oven cornbread with crusty edges, and a big glass of cold milk. Now, that’s a great meal in anyone’s book. A feast to many in fact. That’ll take the edge off any hunger pangs and keep them off for a good long while. That’s actually one of the many benefits of a diet rich in beans – eating them helps stave off hunger and helps with weight management, among their other benefits.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EATING BEANS?

In a word – many. Beans are known to be high in antioxidants, rich in fiber, an excellent source of protein, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, potassium, copper, and zinc.

A regular diet of beans can assist with decreasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and help with managing weight goals. For those dealing with diabetes, beans are considered a superfood. They can slow the rise in blood sugars and help increase energy levels. The B vitamins in beans help keep brain and nerve cells healthy; calcium maintains strong bones and teeth; potassium reduces the risk of high blood pressure and stroke; and folate protects the heart and reduces cancer risks. For LDL cholesterol management, a daily intake of ½ to 1 ½ cups of navy beans results in a 10 percent reduction.

Beans can lower the risk of coronary heart disease and are considered a replacement for red meat. This makes beans an excellent protein source for those on a vegetarian or glutenfree food plans.

Beans also benefit your budget; they are considered the least expensive source of protein (a one pound bag usually averages less than $2.00). Plus, they can be purchased in a variety forms – from dried, flash frozen, fresh,

or canned. If you buy canned beans, rinsing them will help reduce the salt intake. Dried beans have a long shelf life and can be kept in a waterproof container for up to two years, or longer if hermetically sealed.

Beans are so versatile. They can be a stand-alone side dish, the main dish, or be added to soups, salads, pasta dishes, stews, or roasted as a healthy snack.

HOW MANY TYPES OF BEANS ARE THERE?

A lot to be succinct. There’s the kidney bean, which has a somewhat thick skin, but tastes great in homemade chili. Soybeans, the lentil bean family (red, green, and brown lentils), lima beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, red beans, butter beans, great northern beans, navy, pinto, and white beans. Adzuki beans, perhaps a lesser-known bean, are used in many Asian dishes and in sweets. Mung beans, used in sweet or savory Indian dishes, are one of the smallest beans; however, they are rich in fiber (1 cup equates to 15 grams of fiber). These are just some of the varieties to select from. With such a variety, beans can be a welcome addition to any meal.

WHAT ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS OF BEANS?

A word of caution, beans can be a migraine trigger to some.

Also, to avoid the gas often associated with beans, change the water frequently when soaking dried beans and rinse canned beans. Adding herbs, lemon balm, or caraway may help reduce gas. Plus, there are overthe-counter remedies available.

Cold weather is a great time to try out some new ways to incorporate beans into your diet with soups and stews. White beans and ham soup is delicious on a cold, wintery night. Explore the web or pull out your cookbooks for some new beanbased recipes. Enjoy the healthy benefits of beans!

GORILLA GLASS:

SCRATCH PROOFING THE MODERN WORLD Take a peek at your smartphone or tablet.

If its surface has only a very few scratches after lots of use, then the glass was most likely forged in a plant owned by Corning located in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The story of how Corning’s tough glass came to be on our cell phones can be traced back to a gentleman we all know so well, Mr. Steve Jobs. Below, a brief history about Corning’s super glass and how Mr. Jobs led the way for today’s smart device makers.

Chemcor glass was stronger than ordinary glass and, possibly more significant, was transparent. You could see through it just like regular glass. Unfortunately, although Corning excitedly promoted the new glass (i.e., for telephone booths, car windshields, and jail windows, etc.) it simply didn’t catch on, and its promotion was shelved. It wasn’t until 2006 that it truly found a calling. Enter Steve Jobs.

Corning is probably best known for its line of nearly indestructible white dishes and oven cookware introduced during the 1950s and ‘60s. Those familiar white, and sometimes stenciled, dishes were made from a product called CorningWare.

CorningWare is a ceramic glass hybrid that evolved into the scratch resistant glass used on the first Apple iPhones.

By 2006 Mr. Jobs was already back at Apple Computer making magic when he redesigned iMac desktop computers and laptops, and introduced music iPods to the world. Always searching for new and better materials to put in Apple merchandise, Jobs now turned his attention to the kind of glass used by Apple. In particular, he was searching for strong glass to incorporate into a new product being introduced, the iPhone.

At first, Mr. Jobs was going to use plastic for iPhones, like iPods. However, true to form, he now wanted something better, stronger and more elegant. He also required the glass be as scratch resistant as possible. Although he looked towards Asia for such a glass, a business associate suggested he speak with Wendell Weeks, CEO of Corning, before making his decision. By then Corning had developed a strong, scratch resistant glass for cell phones marketed under the moniker Gorilla Glass.

According to book author Brian Merchant (The One Device, The Secret History of the iPhone), in the early 1950s a Corning inventor and chemist named Don Stookey was experimenting with photosensitive glass in a Corning lab in upstate New York. Stookey put some samples of lithium silicate in a furnace and turned up the heat to 600 degrees Celsius, about the same temperature as a pizza oven. However, as fate would have it, a faulty heat controller allowed the temperature to rise to over 900 degrees Celsius, a temperature that turns many things liquid. Thinking his experiment was ruined, he was surprised to find that the silicate was transformed into an “off-colored white-colored plate.” When he pulled it from the furnace it fell to the floor and, to Stookey’s surprise, the plate didn’t break, it bounced. This overcooked silicate concoction evolved into the first synthetic glass ceramic which Corning named Pyroceram.

Because of its strength and lightweight characteristics, Pyroceram was hawked to the U.S. military and subsequently used in missile nose cones. However, its real commercial success came when it was tweaked through experimentation and combined with an emerging consumer kitchen appliance, the microwave oven.

Soon, the now familiar CorningWare line of serving dishes became musthave accessories for homemakers with microwaves. With more scientific breakthroughs and experimentation, a new super strong, shatter resistant

Jobs told CEO Weeks what he wanted and Weeks convinced Jobs that Gorilla Glass was the ticket. A deal was struck.

Jobs told Weeks he would order as much glass as Corning could manufacture and gave him a very short window of time in which to ramp up production.

Although no Corning factories were manufacturing Gorilla Glass at that time, Weeks accepted the challenge and later recalled, “We did it in under six months.”

The first Apple iPhones were shipped in June 2007.

Today we take Gorilla Glass and similar scratch resistant glass for granted. We assume our touch-screen goodies are scratch and shatter resistant. However, we should never forget, and be forever grateful, that it was Corning, an iconic American glass company, and Steve Jobs from Apple Computer, that introduced us to the new wonder glass on our hand held devices.
