The View From This Side FEBRUARY 2017

I’m struggling to write this month’s View.

With two close friends going through battles with cancer, I’ve felt overwhelmed. Thankfully, we published an article last October titled, “Have a Friend Who is Sick? Read This Now,” and I’ve referred to it several times recently.

If you haven’t read it, please search for it on ForsythWoman.com. It’s worth the read, and I am so grateful we published it.

Despite the pain of watching people I love who are hurting, there are also blessings. Some I have to look for harder than others, but my dear friend and business partner, Robin, who is battling breast cancer, recently had a PET scan, which showed there is no cancer anywhere else in her body. What a great relief! When chemo began to affect Robin’s beautiful hair, our team had a wig shopping party. While we hated the reason for the shopping trip, it was a great deal of fun for our team, Robin, and her daughters to laugh and spend time together.

So, with all that said, I’m looking for the good, even when things look bleak. I ask your continued prayers, not only for Robin and her family, but for my friend Julie and hers as well.

As we wrap up this issue of Forsyth Woman, we say good-bye to one of our two interns, Savannah Norris. Savannah joined us this fall, and we instantly loved her sweet and charming personality! While Savannah’s internship is coming to a close, we have invited her to continue writing for us, so you’ll still be seeing her name throughout the magazines!

We really do have an awesome team. As much as we’re going to miss Savannah, I’m thrilled that Mallory is still with us and will be through the summer. We’ve been blessed with two great interns this year, and we’ve come to love them both very much! Working with this team is more like working with family and friends, rather than co-workers. They are all talented and dynamic, and we are so fortunate to have this group!

“What s’ Your Secret for a

Happy Marriage? ”

“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” ~ Mignon McLaughlin 30 years ago today “some guy” lost his luggage, I found it, and we found each other. The rest, as they say, is history. In October of this year, we will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. That’s three decades! Seriously? Where did the time go?

It is amazing and wonderful, and surreal all at the same time. Even now, he makes me laugh harder than anyone else. My heart still skips a beat when I hear his voice, and just the sight of him makes me weak in the knees. People have asked us, “What’s your secret?” It’s hard to know where to start.

Be realistic -- My (very wise) stepmom once told me, “A happy marriage is an 80/20 proposition. 80% of the time, you adore them and cannot imagine the world without them in it. 20% of the time, you want to take them to the curb with the trash.” So far that holds true for us. It is unrealistic to expect to be head over heels every day.

Some days we are not at our best (because we are human), and that’s okay. We hang in there because we know that “falling in love” feeling really does come back, again and again.

Forget “perfection” -- No one is perfect (but together we are close). We make room for one another’s perspectives. Even if we don’t agree, we are respectful. By being open to other ideas, we are always growing, as a couple, but also as people. Some couples make the mistake of trying to “fix” what makes them different. Why? Being different doesn’t mean they’re broken.

Be polite -- “The secret to a happy marriage is just keep being as polite to one another as you are to your friends.” ~ Robert Quillen. Have you ever noticed that many folks are kinder to those who love them least and harder on those who love them most? Isn’t that backward? My husband is my best friend, so I remember to speak to him that way.

Have touch points -- We are two people in one relationship, not conjoined twins. It’s okay to have different hobbies and different friends.

What we share are “touch points.” These are rituals shared by just us two, and that makes all the difference. For example, for 30 years we have had morning coffee together to start our day. In person or on Skype! It seems small, but it has become precious and sacred to us.

Sharing one thing is more special than sharing everything.

This is a marathon, not a sprint -- Marriage can be hard work -- be willing to get your hands dirty -- it’s worth it. Having kids, a mortgage, making a home -- these are just a few of the challenges. And, you’re going to make mistakes. Too often we hear of relationships that hit the skids when the going gets rough. Not all marriages work, of course, but the ones worth having are the ones worth fighting for.

Be selective -- “The key to a successful marriage is leaving about three or four things a day – unsaid.” ~ author unknown. Before saying something that might cause hurt or anger, I consider its importance and impact. I have discovered that no matter how unhappy I may be, his unhappiness hurts me more.

Maybe it’s an old argument that no one ever wins, or maybe it’s as silly as his stray eyebrow hair or the way I look in these pants. Seriously, some things are better left unsaid. Let it go.

There are many other reasons that our marriage works; but, if I had to give one piece of advice it would be to have the marriage you would want your children to have -- because they probably will.

The team at Hospice & Palliative CareCenter started a communitychanging and life-altering annual event in 2016. The event, Living Your Best Life Speaker Series, is designed to educate and inspire our community to live their very best lives – now, and for the rest of their lives. Hospice, after all, is not about helping people die, but rather helping people living fully and comfortably – making the most of every day. This series serves as both a reminder of how important living your best life is, and a toolkit to help you sharpen your skills and help you live the very best life.

October 4, 2016, was an undeniably beautiful day in the Triad, and not even a downpour could have dampened the positive energy flowing from the Benton Convention Center where 1,100 people, a sell-out crowd, attended the inaugural Living Your Best Life Speakers Series event.

This Speaker Series is different than any other program offered in the area because of its mission: to elevate the possibilities and potential of the community and the people who live in it. It began as an idea and collaboration between Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, Dewey’s Bakery and its owners, Scott and Michelle Livengood. Dewey’s was the presenting sponsor, and many other corporate leaders immediately came on board, not only to support Hospice but to invest in the positive impact this series will have on the community.

The inaugural event speaker, Shawn Achor, author of the New York Times best-selling book The Happiness Advantage, shared techniques that, when applied for 21 days, can alter your brain and, consequently, your outlook. Shawn’s research illustrates how you can change your brain to become happier, and that happy people are more creative and productive.

Helping Customers Send Love this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and people are shopping for the perfect gifts for their loved ones. Jewelry, cards, and sweet treats are common presents, but flowers are a lovely gift for loved ones of any age. Flowers are thoughtful, can come as a custom designed arrangement, and can be purchased right here in Winston-Salem with the help of familyowned George K. Walker Florist.

“Since the 1700s, people have given flowers on Valentine’s Day to express their love for someone,” said Owner and COO, Kevin McCarthy. “They are a wonderful, romantic tradition associated with the day. At George K. Walker Florist, we love putting a contemporary twist on a classic holiday gift.”

Salem Gymnastics & Swim The Benefits of Learning to Swim

“I can swim the whole way across the pool!” Hearing those words coming from a child is about as rewarding as it gets. Children don’t know that they’ve also learned to be safe in the water, gained confidence and developed a new skill that lasts a lifetime. As an adult, perhaps you didn’t learn to swim as a child, or you have a fear of the water; you are never too old to learn to swim.

So if you have a child six months old or older, or if you are an adult, Salem Gymnastics & Swim offers swim classes for all ages and all levels of abilities.

A DREAM 20 YEARS IN THE MAKING

For Beth, the dream of having a swim school has been in her plans for about 20 years; Beth owns and operates Salem Gymnastics & Swim with her husband, Ken Morphis, and her father, Frank Minter. “We are the first swim school in the Triad, and we felt this was the perfect addition to our facility and program. With gymnastics, we teach children how to live on the land, how to move, but they also need to know how to move in the water. Studies have shown that children who are proficient in the water, as well as on land, are cognitively smarter,” said Beth.

Salem Gymnastics & Swim expanded their facility by 5,000 square feet, adding two pools – one 25’ x 50’ and the other 25’ x 15’ – and began offering year around swim classes in August 2016.

“There are many differences between our swim classes and traditional swim lessons,” commented Beth. “First, our facility is designed for the sole purpose of learning to swim. Our smaller pool is used for our parent-tot classes, and the larger pool can be divided into seven lanes for our older children and adult classes. The water stays at 89 degrees, and the temperature outside of the pool is 90 degrees; our students never get chilly and are comfortable, whether they are in or out of the pool. Second, both pools are 4 feet deep, so most students and all instructors can touch the bottom; no deep ends. Third, our portable platforms can move as the students’ progress and can swim further. Our student-teacher ratio is 4 to 1, giving one-on-one attention, and for those children or adults who would like private lessons, we offer those, too. Students are divided up by age and by swim level abilities.

Plus, both pools can be seen from a viewing area. With year around classes, students progress in their abilities without any lapse, unlike with seasonal swim lessons.” Swim classes are also available for children and adults with disabilities, as both pools have handicap lifts.

SWIMMING: A LIFELONG SKILL

During swim classes, children and adults learn to have a healthy respect for the water and the rules to follow to save lives and prevent accidents. But the benefits of learning to swim go beyond safety and include some you may not have thought of.

According to the American Psychology Association, learning a new skill, at any age, helps to promote healthy brain function.

“Children, especially, learn best when they are exposed to a variety of ideas, experiences and skills. Learning something completely new helps children develop critical thinking skills that will help them adapt to a variety of situations,” stated Beth.

Learning to swim gives one a sense of accomplishment and pride in your abilities. The more children complete new tasks, make friends and have fun doing both, the more confidence they gain in themselves. “So many kids today are interested in being on swim teams, and our classes teach them the proper form and how to be efficient in their moves. We offer classes to students already on swim teams to help them brush-up on their skills in the off months,” Beth commented. Some adults are taking swim classes to prepare for triathlons, improving their competitive times.

With children spending time in front of electronic devices, swimming is a way to get them excited about moving.

“Swimming is good for the heart, lungs and muscles without causing joint strain. Kids have so much fun swimming, they don’t notice the exercise they’re getting. No matter what age you are, learning to swim is a skill that has benefits throughout your life,” said Beth.

BY LISA S.T. DOSS On a random day, the unspoken gift that says, “I love you” is often chocolate. It’s more than just a guilty pleasure. The need and desire for just a small block, a mere one ounce, can be defined as a means of healing. It eases stress levels, headaches, and reduces hunger pains.

While the research continues, dark chocolate is a super food. The compounds found in cocoa can help resist the effects of aging and stress, prevent strokes, regulate blood pressure, and provide a significant list of other health benefits. By checking the percentages for low sugar and high cocoa content, you can sing the praises and continue your love of dark chocolate. (Although, the rules still apply.

Moderation in eating chocolate is best!)

WHAT HAVE STUDIES REVEALED?

Dark chocolate’s organic compounds, namely polyphenols, flavanols and catchins, are biologically active and function as a high source of antioxidants. In fact, it tested to contain more antioxidants than any other fruit, including blueberries and cranberries.

The fatty acids found within cocoa are mostly saturated and monounsaturated, which help to define its excellent nutrition value. Similar to any chocolate, the best contains 70 to 85% cocoa with minimal sugar, and will provide you the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of the following soluble fiber and minerals:

• It also includes potassium (relief from a stroke), phosphorus (bone formation), zinc (boosts the immune system), and selenium (important for cognitive function).

Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates Launches New Pregnancy Program:

CenteringPregnancy®

The program has a dedicated room in the new office ideally suited for conversation, sharing, and educating, as well as scales and blood pressure cuffs for monitoring.

Participants keep track of their own weight and blood pressure in their individual CenteringPregnancy® Notebook, provided during the first session. The Notebook is divided into the ten sessions with space for note taking. Most of the information is bulleted or in list format for ease of reference.

This program provides a unique opportunity for educating new moms throughout their pregnancy.

Statistically, studies indicate an increase in birth weight and breastfeeding for Centering® participants. Some pregnancies may be better suited for more traditional office visits (high-risk pregnancies for instance); your doctor will review the options with you.

Last month, Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates launched its new pregnancy program, CenteringPregnancy®, and began enrolling moms-to-be in this innovative approach. As Andrea Conley, board-certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, and one of the facilitators of the plan shared, “Lyndhurst is the only private practice in the area offering this program. Our goal is to provide an additional option for prenatal care for women looking for enhanced prenatal education and group support.” Sharing the pregnancy journey with a small group who are due around the same time has many pluses for new moms-to-be, as well as experienced moms.

• Nutrition, servings sizes, lifestyle choices, and a food diary

CenteringPregnancy® is comprised of ten sessions, each two hours. When compared to traditional pregnancy appointments, the time factors to about the same amount on average. Class sizes are small (8 to 10 women), all due around the same time. Approximately 30 minutes of each session is focused on recording stats, providing each mom with ownership of her personal progress, as well as individual time with her health care provider. Approximately 90 minutes involves learning/education, sharing, activities, and Q&A time.

Topics covered are varied and build up to session ten with the topic of caring for your newborn. With a list of planned topics, the concern of forgetting to ask questions during an office visit is eliminated. WHAT KIND OF RENOVATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE?

Brett: The cottages on the WinstonSalem campus are being renovated, and in a few cases, where the building codes are so out of date, they are being torn down and rebuilt. This will be an ongoing project, with the goal to serve as many children as possible who need residential support.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE LAND AND THE LIVESTOCK?

Brett: Many have been concerned that we may sell the land and the livestock. People love the urban farm – the rolling hills, cattle, and open space set against the backdrop of downtown Winston-Salem. The land gives children a natural space for therapy and rehabilitation. And the farm serves as a vehicle for income to help cover overhead costs associated with the home.

In early summer 2016, a new partnership with The Crossnore School was announced, and since then, there have been many questions throughout the community. The concern is understandable since the 212-acre estate has served Forsyth County for well over 100 years.

However, the school leaders, as well as the leaders of The Crossnore School, are committed to the care and service of children in need. The core values and mission of this partnership remain steadfast, and with pooled resources, the systems have been streamlined and it offers a win-win-win solution for everyone involved.

We talked to the CEO Brett Loftis to learn more about these changes.

WILL THE CHILDREN’S HOME STILL BE THE CHILDREN’S HOME?

Brett: The Children’s Home’s partnership with The Crossnore School has resulted in a name change, as well as a branding change. The two schools will now be known as “Crossnore School & Children’s Home.” Our branding and new logo reflect the change for both the Winston-Salem campus and the Crossnore Campus.

WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THE MERGER?

Brett: It’s not a secret that The Children’s Home has been struggling for some time. Despite the financial struggles, Winston-Salem residents have been active in the preservation of The Children’s Home. The board of directors has done an excellent job maintaining the commitment to using this historic landmark to the service of children. After studying various methods from

other facilities who offer similar services, the decision was made to create an affiliation with The Crossnore School. The blending of the two resources creates a stronger brand, and with this partnership, we can serve more children. That’s the purpose.

Crossnore School & Children’s Home brings “The Sanctuary Model®” to Winston-Salem, an internationally respected model for helping children through various traumas, including neglect and abuse. This inclusion adds another layer of service to the historic Children’s Home and further expands the continuum of services across western North Carolina.

HOW DOES THE FAMILY FIRST PREVENTION SERVICES ACT FIT INTO THE EQUATION?

We are hopeful that by opening up more living space for children in need, we can help break the generational cycles of addiction, abuse, and poverty. The estate will continue to serve as a sanctuary for children to live, heal, and learn about security. Our mission has always been, and will continue to be, to serve the children, mind, body, and soul.

CAN DONATIONS MADE TO CROSSNORE SCHOOL & CHILDREN’S HOME BE EARMARKED FOR THE WINSTON-SALEM CAMPUS?

Brett: All of us believe that the ideal solution to any family crisis is to leave children with their families. However, there will always be a need to separate children from their parents, whether it’s due to abuse, addiction, or other situation.

We do what we can, though to keep families together. However, with all that said, there’s a difference between the cost of prevention and the cost of caring. While we support the goal of Family First Prevention Services Act, funding must be allocated to cover the cost of childcare.

Brett: Absolutely! We know donors want to know how their gifts are being spent. While we appreciate all contributions, we respect the generosity of our community and will use them according to the terms presented through the donation.

You can hear a catchphrase so often that you don’t catch it anymore. Familiarity causes the words to sluggishly slip unnoticed into the back seat of your thoughts while fresh sights and sounds take the wheel.

For instance, if I had a dime for every time my mama said, “God loves you,” my children’s college tuition would be paid in full. For the longest time, the repetition deafened me to the gravity of those words. Sure, God loves me. God loves everybody.

To be honest, I let the words roll off of me because I wasn’t particularly sure how He really felt about me. After all, I knew my failings in real time.

Eventually, I took a closer look at this “God loves you” God, and I realized He actually did love even me. Not even my imperfections could jeopardize this reality. But can I tell you a secret? I assumed God loves me because that’s what He’s supposed to do. Isn’t it God’s job to love? It’s pretty much written in the contract for “Goddom,” right?

If God had no choice in the matter, His love seemed dutiful, kind of like taking out the trash or paying taxes . . . It’s the right thing to do, but certainly nothing to get excited about.

I repeatedly heard similar gracious catchphrases that further skewed my perceptions, such as, “God accepts you just as you are.” Accepts? He “accepts” me? This description of God’s love sounded as if He only begrudgingly allowed me inside His inner circle.

It took me years to realize how severely my assumptions had veered off track. People’s descriptions and interpretations of God’s love fall short every time. His intentions toward us are simply too enormous for the human language. The reality is that God doesn’t merely accept us. The Creator of the Universe fully embraces us like family. It utterly astounds me!

So what’s the difference between “accept” and “embrace”? Imagine kindly

allowing a pedestrian to cross in front of you in a busy parking lot. You both go separately about your business, with no consequence but no connection either. Now imagine passionately enveloping your child after a long separation.

You unreservedly wrap yourself around that walking, talking piece of your heart with love that refuses to let go. Accept and embrace . . . Do you catch the difference?

Are you beginning to see the irrationality of this “God loves you”? Jesus left home to make a home in you. There was no coercion, no mere duty…only a compelling love that willingly and selflessly did whatever it took to get in your corner and remain there all your days.

Why don’t you stop for a moment and let your soul breathe Him in? Inhale and exhale the inexhaustible love of God that whispers to your heart right now.

When we truly “catch” God’s intentions toward us, we can live with a profound assurance that His relentless love pursues us.

We can walk confidently through our days knowing that the Father never hesitantly accepts us; rather, He lavishly embraces us. God’s unwavering obsession with our well-being energizes us to live wholly empowered by all He is and all He gives.

When we truly discern how inexhaustibly God loves us and delights in saying “yes” to our deepest desires, we will wholeheartedly trust His “no” or “not yet.” This good Father sees around the bend and protects us in ways that remain hidden from where we stand, but always work for our good.

It’s time to hit the reset button.

Stop allowing distorted paradigms to taint your perception of God’s love for you. Live full because He gives fully!

Say it with me: I am extremely blessed. I am highly favored. I am deeply loved. Oh, YES. YOU. ARE! Catch that!

Five Points

BY ROSEY When I saw Five Points come up on my list of upcoming reviews, I was super excited!

I love the atmosphere at Five Points, as well as the friendly staff, and I knew that the food was going to be fantastic. I was invited to taste test some new items on the menu, as well as some traditional favorites!

I was joined by my husband, our photographer, Melinda, and one of the magazines’ interns, Mallory. Mallory is a sweetheart, but also a notoriously picky eater. However, I felt that this was a good experience for her and invited her to join us. And I’m glad I did because I learned that a picky eater can be cured simply by visiting Five Points! Since the review took place only days after Christmas, I considered it a post-Christmas miracle! Mallory loved everything that was put in front of her!

But before I get ahead of myself… General managers Jack and Pam Welker gave us a warm welcome and our server, Angie, was both knowledgeable and personable throughout our meal!

We declined drinks, opting for standards like water and tea. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t speak of the bar at Five Points. Fully stocked, with a great selection of beer and wine, Five Points has something for everyone – from the basic to the more sophisticated.

We sampled warm bread while we waited for appetizers. This bread is unique and reminiscent of a New Orleans beignet. While not sweet, it is served with a creamy herb butter that is a perfect precursor to what was to come.

Appetizers arrived and we started with Truffle Fries. Traditionally cut French fries are tossed in a truffle oil and lightly coated with parmesan cheese, then served with a side of bacon aioli. This signature appetizer takes the common French fry to a new, sophisticated level! We sampled Pomegranate Shrimp which were flash-fried and tossed in an Asian pomegranate glaze that had the perfect zing of lime accent. The shrimp were perfectly cooked.

We also tried Five Points’ Signature Wings which had been coated in Thai Peanut sauce. These were everything you expect a wing to be, with that extra bit of elegance for which Five Points is noted.

Next, we were served Fire Roasted Tomato Bisque. This is the kind of tomato soup you dream of on a cold winter day. We also had Crab and Corn Chowder, which was thick and rich.

The dish feels like the comfort-food favorite, potato soup, but with the distinctive flavor of crab and corn added. Topped with spicy oyster crackers, this soup is a filling and satisfying dish all on its own. And as for the Warm Goat Salad that we shared… well, this is my favorite

every time I visit Five Points. I love the flavors of the greens mixed with the unexpected sweet of the cranberries and dates, along with the spiced pecans and balsamic glaze – all paired with a lightly breaded goat cheese that adds that perfect touch of creaminess.

For dinner, our group sampled several new menu items. First, the Brown Sugar and Almond Crusted Salmon. The salmon is served with a thick layer of Brie and almonds. Each bite of this savory fish has a hint of sweetness to it, and the richness comes from a lemon-thyme butter sauce. It’s a decadent entree and served with a side of basmati rice and broccoli-cauliflower. An excellent option for any seafood lover!

We also tried the Filet Mignon. My favorite cut of meat was perfectly marinated in a cabernet demiglaze and served over grilled leeks. It was perfectly seared, making it crispy on the outside while preserving the juiciness of the meat on the inside.

The baked potato was crusted with salt before it was baked and served with a selection of traditional toppings. The asparagus we tried was firm, yet tender, and accented with a citrus zest.

The Dijon Chicken breast was basted with a thick, Dijon cream sauce, and topped with spinach and sundried tomatoes. The chicken was tender and so easy to cut! The Dijon flavor didn’t overpower the dish but complemented it perfectly. It’s a new favorite in my book!

For the bacon lover, the Five Points Bacon Bacon Cheddar Burger is the hamburger to dream about… fresh ground beef, topped with Applewood-smoked bacon, then cheese, then a layer of that decadent bacon aioli we sampled earlier with the Truffle Fries, then more bacon, plus arugula, tomato, and onion.

Come hungry if you want to order this burger!

Finally – we sampled dessert. Despite my sweet tooth, I wasn’t sure I was going to have room for more than a bite or two after all that amazing food, so be sure to save room! The Warm Belgian Chocolate Torte is a chocolate-lover’s dream. The homemade Cheesecake with Balsamic Sauce was a surprising twist of creamy and tangy with the perfect graham cracker crust every cheesecake needs! Finally, the house favorite, the White Chocolate Bread Pudding, was drizzled with salted caramel. It was dense and rich and a perfect, shareable dessert! All the desserts were served with homemade whipped cream and vanilla bean ice cream!

Expanding Treatment with Invisalign During 2017

Invisalign is not just another tool in the toolbox—it is a whole new box of tools that I’m able to use in order to expand the opportunities for patients.

Since the beginning of his career, Dr. Paul Rudnicke has incorporated the latest advancements in his orthodontic practice with the goal of providing the best care and most successful treatment for his patients. Currently, he is finding that Invisalign clear aligner technology is one of the best ways to help patients achieve that perfect smile.

“We have invested in a lot of additional education and training into using Invisalign,” said Dr. Rudnicke. “Today, choosing to utilize a series of clear aligners is as good as—or better—than traditional braces.”

INVISALIGN EXPLAINED

Align Technology’s Invisalign product is a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made specifically for the patient’s teeth. Each aligner is replaced every one to two weeks, and the patient’s teeth move—little by little, week by week—toward the projected final position.

“Invisalign is not just another tool in the toolbox—it is a whole new box of tools that I’m able to use in order to expand the opportunities for patients,” said Dr. Rudnicke. “It’s a growing opportunity for both adults and teenagers.”

INVISALIGN TREATMENT STEPS

One of the patient benefits to Invisalign is that there are fewer visits to the orthodontist. After an initial meeting to discuss if Invisalign is the right plan, the first step is to perform X-rays, impressions and pictures of the teeth and bite, all of which are scanned into a computer by Invisalign.

Dr. Rudnicke then uses 3D reconstructions to virtually move the teeth precisely into a specific position and sequence. Once he approves the final plan, Align Technology manufactures a series of clear aligners that patients wear all the time—removing only for eating and drinking everything except water. The aligners are switched out for new ones every one to two weeks until treatment is completed.

Rudnicke Orthodontics is getting a new piece of technology that will help make the entire process go even more efficiently. “Typically, we had to send physical impressions off to the Invisalign lab technicians to scan into their computers,” said Dr. Rudnicke. “Now, we are getting our own scanner and will be able to upload the scans, which are a series of intraoral photographic captures, from our computer to Align Technology instantly. This allows for even more accuracy in creating a better fit with the clear aligners. Another plus is not having to deal with messy impressions!”

INVISALIGN BENEFITS

Besides being more precise and predictable, Invisalign simply offers patients a better experience. Invisalign is more comfortable than traditional braces, harder to see in the mouth, and causes no lip or cheek irritation.

Patients wear the clear aligners for 20 hours a day, removing them for eating, drinking and brushing. Because there are no brackets and wires, it is easier to control plaque. Additionally, the clear aligners work with teeth that have had a lot of dental work, such as crowns, because no brackets are glued to them.

Even with all the benefits, it doesn’t mean that Invisalign is the right choice for EVERY patient. “I spend several hours on each patient treatment plan, making sure they are getting the best care and treatment possible,” said Dr. Rudnicke. “For some patients, Invisalign works best; for others, the traditional braces are a better option. Basically, it comes down to what I can do to help people achieve their smile goals.”

“Clear aligner therapy with Invisalign is more precise in moving the teeth because we have direct control not only of tooth position, but also the sequence of movement,” said Dr. Rudnicke.

Traditionally, Invisalign has been one of the more popular options for adults who need braces. “We see patients every day whose teeth may have shifted, or some who never had the opportunity as a teen to have straight teeth,” said Dr. Rudnicke. “Invisalign gives them a chance to accomplish the dream of having straightened teeth without the look or irritation of braces.”

Currently, there is much growth in the Invisalign market for teens.

Align Technology has invested heavily in research and development, which has fostered a much-improved system year after year, according to Dr. Rudnicke. The company has recently removed some of the former barriers for teen treatment, including allowing a number of free replacement aligners and providing an escape clause for teenagers and their parents if the treatment isn’t working.

If you are looking for a place where you can unwind after a day at the office, meet up with friends or just enjoy a glass of wine or a beer, then Corks, Caps & Taps is for you!

Corks, Caps & Taps is the creation of Mark Terry, who has been in the wine industry for over thirty years. Mark began his career at Hargrave Vineyards on Long Island in 1985.The owner, Alex Hargrave, was the pioneer in that area with his vineyard. During that time at Hargrave Vineyards, Mark became a wine barrel sales representative for a company out of California and France. Since Mark was a winemaker, as well as a barrel salesman, his barrel sales took him to many wineries where he was asked to taste the wines and give his professional opinion on how to make the wines better.

Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville, NC, was a buyer of the wine barrels, so Mark stopped and introduced himself to Jack and Lillian Kroustalis as he visited the wineries on the East Coast.

Wine making was an emerging and growing industry at the time and Westbend was the pioneer vineyard and winery in the Yadkin Valley.

In 2004, Mark moved to Lewisville to become the Winemaker/ General Manager at Westbend Vineyards, and in May 2014, he opened a small wine shop in downtown Winston-Salem called Corks, Caps & Taps, just a few doors up from Foothills Brewery. Westbend went up for sale around the time Mark opened Corks, Caps & Taps, and ultimately sold in November 2015. These days, Mark and Lillian are at the wine shop every evening to share what they know about wines, and help customers choose a bottle of wine to take home or have it opened and enjoyed at the wine bar which, by the way, is actually stained with red wine!

With 35 craft beers on tap, rotating regularly, Corks, Caps & Taps has become a regular stop for beer enthusiasts as well as wine lovers, featuring wines from North Carolina, as well as from around the world. “We are one of a few wine shops that have wine stations,” commented Mark.

“Each station has four wines per station where customers can enjoy a sample or a glass of sweet whites, dry whites and

two stations with red wines. We offer a small selection of snack foods and encourage customers to bring in food from elsewhere. Sit back and relax while you watch sports events on our three big screen TVs. By March 2017, I will make a wine with our own label, Corks, Caps & Taps. We have people who come in and ask about the wines that I made in the past. There will be a white blend, a Viognier, a Barrel Fermented Chardonnay a red blend and a Merlot. Making wine is much like an artist with paint; I do the same by creating my masterpiece with wine.”

Corks, Caps & Taps is a family business. Mark’s daughter Nikki Terry is co-owner that you will see there covering the day, while Mark works nights along with Lillian. “Wine is what we know and know well,” said Lillian. “We are more than your average wine shop – we offer knowledge and experience that can be passed on to you.”

“If I had to describe Corks, Caps & Taps, I would say it is laid back,” stated Nikki. “We have regulars that we got to know and know what they like. We can recommend the different new beers on tap or by the six pack. Because we rotate through our wine and beer often, you can always try something new. Most of our 35 craft beers are rare to this area due to us dealing with small specialty distributors. We host birthday parties, high school reunions, business meetings, etc.

Whatever the occasion is, be sure to give us a call. We have events that take place throughout the year.” And the atmosphere is a definite draw. “Our customers like that we don’t have loud music and a ‘bar’ feel, instead you can actually have a conversation with people without having to yell and that’s how our customers like it,” Nikki stated.

Corks Caps & Taps offers a selection of gift items, including tee shirts, towels, coasters, etc., as well as gift certificates. They also have growlers (64 ounce bottles) or bring in your own growler and fill it with one of the 35 beers on tap. Another option is to become a member of the wine club. You may have noticed the Rotary symbol on local signs or billboards, which is a blue and gold geared wheel with a “keyway” in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft, underscored by the motto, “Service Above Self.” In Forsyth County, several active Rotary Clubs are putting this lofty motto into action and are attracting female members to a once “all male society.”

February is Women in Rotary month across the world.

Rotary International (RI) is a worldwide service club founded in 1905 that is currently comprised of “1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world,” as quoted on the RI website rotary.org/en. Rotary focuses efforts in six areas: promoting peace, preventing diseases, providing access to clean water and sanitation, enhancing maternal and child health, improving basic education and literacy, and helping communities develop. Rotary is especially dedicated to ending polio in our lifetimes.

Rotary members have persevered in this fight since 1979 and have now helped eradicate polio in all but three countries worldwide.

The history of women in Rotary is a short, but impressive, journey back to 1987, when the first female members were welcomed into Rotary clubs around the world. By 1990, the number of female Rotarians grew to about 20,000 and reached over 200,000 members worldwide by 2010. Women bring a shared passion for community service locally, nationally, and internationally, and have found Rotary an effective vehicle for accomplishing remarkable goals. Rotary’s impact starts with its members, who turn donations and fundraising into service projects in Forsyth County and beyond.

To celebrate Women in Rotary month, area Rotary clubs are hosting a luncheon with guest speaker Cathy Pace. Cathy is the President and CEO of Allegacy Federal Credit Union and will be speaking about leading with the head and the heart, being your authentic self, and understanding why you need to look beyond the resumes and roles of your team.

“Every surgery has some risks, and it is very important that your doctor discuss these with you,” said FPS Surgeon Dr. George Lawson.

“Even minor procedures have some risks, and we want all of our patients to be thoroughly educated. Fortunately, most patients have no complications and do very well.”

Once you have decided to have plastic surgery, there are several important questions that you must ask, and it all begins with “WHO WILL BE DOING THE SURGERY?”

“The internet is filled with all sorts of people who purport to be plastic surgeons,” said Dr. John Fagg, a surgeon at Forsyth Plastic Surgery. “But, the fact is that almost anyone can claim to be a plastic surgeon these days, and the various board certifications and languages that are used can be very confusing.”

Dr. Fagg notes that many doctors use the term “plastic surgeon,” but, in reality, they have just taken a superficial course in how to do a procedure without lengthy formal basic training.

“A true plastic surgeon is fully trained in the entire specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery, and then certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery after six to eight years of rigorous training,” said Dr. Andy Schneider, another of the surgeons at Forsyth Plastic Surgery.

“If the board certification is anything but The American Board of Plastic Surgery, please take a closer look and ask questions -- you may be surprised at what you find.”

“WHAT PROCEDURE IS RIGHT FOR ME?”

“Make sure that your surgeon listens carefully to what you want to achieve, and never let someone push a procedure on you,” said Dr. Gil Kingman, a partner at FPS. “You should feel like your surgeon has listened to you and that the surgery being discussed makes sense to achieve your goals and what you want to spend.”

“WHERE WILL MY SURGERY BE PERFORMED?”

Service and Faith: The Foundation of Care at Summit Eye Care

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. ~Philippians 4:13 When Dr. Vic Khemsara bought his practice in 2009 and renamed it Summit Eye Care, he knew three things: first, he wanted to be faithful to God’s plan for his life, second, he wanted to prayerfully ask for direction in all things, and, third he wanted his practice to not only serve others, but be a blessing for them as well. “Faith is the foundation of my practice,” shared Dr. Khemsara. “As a Christian, I want everything in my life, including my business, to have Christ at the center. When He takes the lead, great things happen.” And Christ certainly has led Dr. Khemsara to where he is today.

Originally from Houston, TX, Dr. Khemsara graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. The move was a blessing for many in our community, including those who work at Summit Eye Care! With a team of 15 employees, including Dr. Khemsara and another eye doctor, Dr. Keith Biggs, Summit Eye Care has grown since 2009.

The practice recently moved to a newly renovated office on Trenwest Drive off Stratford Road, making it a central, easyto-find location for patients throughout Forsyth County. Dr. Biggs received his BS from UNC-Asheville and completed his Doctorate of Optometry from Nova Southeastern University, where he was distinguished as the top graduating student for excellence in primary care. Dr. Biggs grew up in Asheville, NC, and recently relocated to Winston-Salem with his wife and three children.

Moreover, the team is strong, with longevity being the name of the game. Kathy Bolling is the most senior employee and serves as Practice Administrator at Summit Eye Care. She has been in the business for over 30 years, including when it was led by another doctor and under a different name. “I’ve seen a lot of changes at Summit Eye Care,” shared Bolling. “Dr. Khemsara has done an excellent job of growing while staying focused

on patient care.” Teena Strader, a technician, has been with the practice for 10 + years, and chooses to drive 50 minutes each way to work because of her love for the practice, staff, and patients.

Indeed, the CDC reports that only 15% of children get an eye exam and only 22% receive vision screening.

Women’s Leadership Council & United Way Making a Difference in Forsyth County

Look closer behind the scenes across Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, and you’ll see a network of powerful and caring women leaders united and working to improve the lives of families and the odds for success of the county’s next generation.

By all indications, they are a remarkable force in our community.

Meet the Women’s Leadership Council (WLC), an affinity group of the United Way of Forsyth County (UWFC). The group includes 1,000 educators, doctors, homemakers, lawyers, and businesswomen striving to educate women on the most pressing needs facing the Forsyth County community.

WLC’s current mission is to battle the dismal high-school graduation rates across the county. Based on all indicators, they are making great progress despite a North Carolina statistic that more than two out of three eighth graders do not demonstrate math proficiency. WLC is working with UWFC to accelerate progress toward UWFC’s bold goal of reaching a 90 percent graduation rate by 2018.

From a start rate of 70 percent, the work of WLC has helped to increase the current graduation rate to 85.4%. That means there are 2,509 graduates who would not have graduated pre-2007. The average graduate earns $400,000 more in a lifetime than a drop out. That amounts to a $1.004 billion dollar impact on our community. As a whole, the UWFC and WLC spent $6.2 million which is about a 160:1 return on investment seen directly in this community.

“It is the mission of United Way of Forsyth County to convene key stakeholders – residents, nonprofit organizations, the faithbased community, business and education leaders – in an inclusive approach to focus on fundamental and sustainable change in the key areas of education, financial stability, health, and basic needs,” said Cindy Gordineer, UWFC president and CEO. “The Women’s Leadership Council is a perfect embodiment of the spirit of that mission.”

Founded in 2007, the WLC has recruited more than 1,000 members and raised more than $4.5 million to support United Way’s graduation rate effort. According to Betty Lou Vontsolos, Inmar vice president of client services and operations and past WLC Chair, it was a no-brainer to get involved.

“Since United Way’s Graduating Our Future initiative targets high schools, we decided to focus our attention on middle schools. Our goal is to prepare students to be successful and hit the ground running as they begin 9th grade,” said Vontsolos, noting the passion the women share for this effort.

“In pursuit of this goal, the Women’s Leadership Council’s monetary contributions and our volunteer time are spent on three projects: Summer Success Academy, Tutoring and Family Engagement,” Vontsolos added.

To date, the WLC has funded programs at Philo-Hill Magnet Academy, Mineral Springs, and East Forsyth Middle Schools. The programs include: After and In-School Tutoring; Summer Success Academy, which helps aid the transition between middle and high school by providing students with preview work material, helping them become acclimated to a new school setting, meeting new classmates, and helping with education skills like time management and study skills; Family Engagement Counselors, in which guidance counselors work closely with families, recruiting and signing them up for workshops, making home visits, and providing general support and resources for events like applying to college; and lastly, School of Hard Knocks, an amazing program

that teaches middle school students the value of budgeting and money sense while playing a fun game of “Life.”

While it may take many years to determine the full impact on the high school graduation rate for the students in the programs today, there have been a number of ways to measure progress, such as: The WLC reports much early improvement across each area. Recent statistics show the number of students passing end-ofgrade tests at Philo-Hill Magnet Academy has doubled. The results confirm that WLC’s focus on middle schools is making a significant impact. The progress report is further strengthening WLC’s enthusiasm and commitment.

Barbara Duck, BB&T senior executive vice president and chief information officer, showed strong commitment and high enthusiasm from the very beginning. In fact, Duck’s enthusiasm has been contagious.

Thanks to her leadership, the BB&T chapter of WLC is the largest corporate chapter with nearly current 245 members. For her dedication and service to the WLC mission, Duck was recently honored with the Susan Cameron Award in recognition of exemplifying the true spirit of educating, engaging and empowering women.

“It’s inspiring the way we all have continued to be passionate about assisting those in need through our time, dedication and financial resources. Moreover, the WLC is a great example that there is no limit to the positive ways one can impact the community when combined with like-minded individuals,” said Duck.

There is no other color used more to describe things around us: celebrities walk down the red carpet, you might get caught up in red tape, or eat a piece of Red Velvet Cake, read the story of Little Red Riding Hood to your children, rent a movie from Redbox, give blood at the American Red Cross, eat dinner at Red Lobster, enjoy a glass of red wine, try to get the red-eye out of a photo; in fact, you might, like one of my sons-in-law, be a Red Sox fan.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I will not be glued to the TV on February 5, 2017, watching the 51st Super Bowl, no matter which teams are playing. I am, however, a nerd for trivia and in that spirit offer up a plateful of trivia to celebrate Super Bowl history. Here we go . . .

The first time the term ‘Super Bowl’ was used was in 1969. That was the year that Joe Namath famously predicted his team would win – and they did (Jets 16 / Baltimore Colts 7). It was also the first event to earn $3 million in football history, and the first time Roman numerals were used to designate the game.

In 1975, the Mary Tyler Moore show had a plotline around who would win the Super Bowl. On the show, the Vikings won; however, in reality, the Steelers were the winners. Mary Tyler Moore kept her promise to apologize if the Vikings didn’t actually win.

Another TV show, Quantum Leap, had one of the lead characters comment during an episode that Pittsburgh was trailing by three points at the Super Bowl. In fact, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost to Dallas in Super Bowl XXX (27 to 17).

Super Bowl XVII had a moment of silence in honor of University of Alabama’s famous coach, Bear Bryant, who died four days before the game.

The first time the phrase “I’m going to Disney World” was uttered was by Phil Simms (quarterback and MVP), after the Giants defeated the Broncos (39 – 20) at Super Bowl XXI in 1987.

He was paid $75,000 for that phrase (both he and John Elway had agreed so Disney was assured that whoever the winning quarterback was, the phrase would be said). Other athletes have also said the famous phrase, but it remains closely associated with the Super Bowl.

In 1991, Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXV. Security was incredibly tight due to the first Gulf War; helicopter gunships were circling the stadium. Her performance is considered by many as one of the best renditions of the anthem.

The Super Bowl trophy costs $75,000.

There have been a number of teams with multiple trips to the Super Bowl: • Eight Super Bowl trips go to the Pittsburgh Steelers (with six wins), Dallas Cowboys (five wins), New England Patriots (four wins), and Denver Broncos (three wins).

• The San Francisco 49ers went to the Super Bowl six times (and won five times).

• The teams playing in the Super Bowl five times include the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants (four wins each), the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders (three wins each), and the Miami Dolphins (two wins).

On the other hand, some teams have never played a Super Bowl – Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans.

The coldest super bowl played to-date was in New Orleans (yes, really). The game day temperature for Super Bowl VI was 39 degrees. Super Bowl XLI in Miami was blessed with rain throughout the game plus 20 mph winds. The game must go on -- no matter the weather.

Super Bowl performances have clearly evolved over the years: • In the early years, most of the half-time performances were by university marching bands. Beginning in 1967, the half-time shows featured the University of Arizona, Grambling State (two appearances), Florida A&M (two appearances), University of Michigan, and University of Texas.

• Following the marching band period, for a number of years the half time was devoted to ‘salute’ performances –to Louis Armstrong (1972), Duke Ellington (1975), to the Big Band Era (featuring Up with People) (1980), to the Mardi Gras Festival, to the ‘60s and Motown, to the 100th Anniversary of Hollywood, and more. The 1988 spectacular must have been just that -- 88 grand pianos with the Rockettes and Chubby Checker.

• Since the ‘90s, most of the half time performances have featured one or two top performers such as Madonna, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, or, for this year, Lady Gaga.

Advertiser cost for a 30 second commercial during the Super Bowl began in 1967 at $42,000. In 1995, the cost was $1 million; and in 2016, $5 million. Many times, the advertisements get as much water cooler talk as the game.

Basements are a great addition to a home. Whether used for extra storage space or finished for additional living space, a basement can add a great deal to your home. However you use a basement, proper maintenance (especially in winter and heavy rains) is a critical step, not only to the structural integrity of the basement but to your home itself.

AFTER A HEAVY SNOW COMES HEAVY WATER FLOW

Many homeowners in Northwest North Carolina recently experienced anywhere from 3”-12” of snow and ice in early January, followed by a quick rise in temperatures (all the way to the mid-50s and 60s the following week – got to love North Carolina weather)!

All that snow melts, turning into inches of water. That water will soak into the ground next to your home’s foundation and make its way into your basement or crawl space.

If your home has an exterior French drain system, it is likely clogged and/ or the excessive water from the melt may cause the water table to rise well above the pipe at the base of your foundation wall. Many homes have a block foundation wall, which is extremely porous and will allow water to push through and into a basement or crawl space. 1. GET A BABYSITTER.

You don’t have to choose one over the other. There’s room in your life for both. You just have to be more creative about it once kids arrive on the scene.

This is so obvious it seems silly to even write it. I’m shocked there are people who rarely get a sitter and go out on a date with their significant other. Nothing is going to happen if you hire someone to watch your kids for a couple of hours. I know it can be expensive, but it won’t break the bank to hire someone every once in awhile. It’s worth it, I promise.

2. SNEAK SOME ALONE TIME.

It’s all about making your significant other feel loved and appreciated. Make this a daily priority and take the time to make sure you connect with the person you love.

You might have to get up a little earlier or go to bed a little later, depending on the sleeping schedule of your kids, but you can find alone time. In your house.

Watch a TV show together after the kids go to sleep or have a morning cup of coffee in bed together. The time is there, somewhere. You might just have to work hard to find it.

It’s important.

Thanks to technology, it’s easy to communicate with people. Send your significant other an email, text message, or a message on whatever social media platform you’re into. It doesn’t need to be long, but who doesn’t like getting messages during the day? If you give, you shall receive.

Remember, you’re showing your kids how to have a relationship.

When they grow up, they’ll look back and think about what they learned from watching you.

We all get busy. We’re all juggling a thousand things. No matter how busy you get, or how much you have going on, you can always take the time to say, “I love you.” Do it. No excuses.

Don’t just go through the motions of your relationship while you’re busy raising your kids. With a little effort and planning, you can have both.

Lessons From a First Time Home Buyer

We did it! My husband and I successfully purchased our very first home! And while it may not be perfect, it is 1,700 square feet of memories to be made, and we are over the moon with excitement!

When we started the house hunting process, we had no idea what to expect. We thought we knew what we wanted, we thought this process would be easy and simple, we thought we would be moving out of our cramped apartment into a bigger and better living situation in 3 weeks’ time – and while some of that may have turned out to be true, I can’t be honest without saying purchasing a home has quite a few twists and turns for something commonly seen as a normal step in the progression of life.

We searched for months (six to be exact), we went to showings and open houses and even looked at the updated internet listings several times a day. We were determined.

And while it may have taken a little longer than anticipated or desired, I am confident in saying everything worked out the way it was intended. I feel quite fortunate that our experience was overall positive and want to share the lessons we learned along the way.

Chapter One: Find a rock star buyer’s agent. My

husband and I highly recommend Chrystal Yates of Allen Tate Realtors. Chrystal was honest, yet encouraging; eager, yet patient. She was everything we needed and looked for in someone to navigate us through the complex and overwhelming world of real estate transactions. I stress to any first time home buyer that you should select an agent that you enjoy being with, that you feel comfortable posing questions to and that you can confide any concerns to. A good agent will always have your best interests in mind!

Chapter Two: Find an even more of a rock star mortgage lender. The process took various amounts of paperwork, quite a few answers to questions and piles of bank statements, but I recommend using a company that is responsive, forthcoming and is there to help you. Keep in mind that these companies are wanting your business and not vice versa. Remember – they are there to work for you.

You should feel comfortable asking those ‘silly’ questions, giving them a quick phone call, or doing whatever you need to do to make this uncomfortable process as comfortable as possible.

Chapter Three: Thoroughly understand your needs versus wants and what is important to you. Although we searched for nearly six months, we had a clear understanding of the items that were absolute must-haves and those that we could forgo. Could you do without granite countertops?

More than likely yes, but do you have to have at least two bedrooms to hold your furnishings? Stay true to must-haves while being clear about the items you can remain flexible on.

Chapter Four: Keep calm and carry on. Patience is a

virtue and, frankly, isn’t one of my strong suits. But patience and persistence will ultimately lead you to the perfect fit.

Stick to your gut!

I hope that if you, too, find yourself on the hunt for your first home, that you will keep these thoughts and considerations in mind. There is always a light at the end of the dark tunnel, and that tunnel may just lead you home.

A Birthday Surprise

Health Forsyth Medical Center. They said something is wrong with my heart, but I don’t believe it. It’s probably just the flu.”

“This is the last thing I remember until three and a half weeks later,” says Frann.

Later that afternoon, they took Frann to the catheterization lab to have a stent put in. However, the doctors came out and shared with her husband that the artery was too narrow for a stent and that she was being taken to the cardiac ICU for observation.

The doctors were still working on Frann when she had started to code.

“By the end of it, I had coded 19 times,” says Frann.

“With the support of a chaplain, counselor, and the lead cardiac ICU nurse, Stephen was informed of my status and was told I was probably not going to make it. He was encouraged to call the family,” shares Frann.

Since she wasn’t stabilizing, the doctors placed Frann in an induced coma. Her mom flew back down, her two daughters, Meredith and Gillian, who were away at summer jobs, returned home immediately, and her husband stayed by her side. Exactly one week into the coma, they tried to take Frann off the ventilator, and she coded again that evening for the 20th time.

She stabilized after three and a half weeks in the coma and shortly after she awoke, doctors implanted a defibrillator in Frann’s chest.

“Waking up in the hospital and seeing my children’s faces and seeing my husband made me want to live for my future. You never know things are going to be taken away from you until they are,” shares Frann.

It was not your typical birthday present. Not something that most would be grateful for. Not something that families get together to celebrate. Frann didn’t know it, but the belated birthday gift she received for her 55th birthday was the best present she could ever ask for - a new look at life.

Frann Paige was a healthy and happy wife and mother, an art teacher at Clemmons Elementary School and calligraphy instructor at Forsyth Tech. Friday, June 19, 2015, was her 55th birthday. It was also the last day of school at Clemmons Elementary.

Frann worked very hard in her classroom making sure it would be ready for the next school year.

After school, she went out for a birthday dinner with her husband, Stephen.

“I woke up the next morning, and I couldn’t stand,” remembers Frann. “I felt very dizzy, but felt better by dinnertime, and when I woke up the next morning, I felt absolutely fine.”

On Monday, she drove her mom up to Blowing Rock. “I should have known something was wrong when I didn’t buy anything that day,” laughs Frann. The next day, she drove her mom to the airport and still felt fine.

“On Wednesday, I had a lovely dinner with Stephen, and I woke up in the middle of the night with terrible heartburn,” shares Frann.

“I also had a horrible pain in my jaw and was just sweaty all over.”

Several times since her birthday, Stephen had suggested that she go see a doctor or go to the emergency room, but Frann responded, “I’m fine, there’s nothing wrong,” thinking she had just caught the flu or a virus. “I kept ignoring all the signs,” Frann reflects.

On Thursday morning, she drove herself to her doctor when the office opened. Within 10 minutes, the doctor performed an EKG. Frann called her husband and said, “An ambulance is coming, and they are taking me to the emergency room at Novant

“I didn’t pay attention to any of the warning signs. I got a wake-up call for my birthday. Women need to know these signs as knowing them could save their lives. Now I am listening to my body and teaching my daughters and anyone who is willing to listen and learn the signs of a heart attack in women,” says Frann.

A heart attack is not a traditional birthday gift, and it is not one that anyone would ever put on a wish list. However, it has changed Frann Paige’s life.

“I live every day now thinking about my family, my friends and where I have come from. From a doctor telling my husband that it was a strong possibility that I was not going to make it - to me fighting and making it - is amazing,” shares Frann.

February is American Heart Month and Friday, February 3 is National Wear Red Day. ACTING F.A.S.T. Some things in life are better accomplished in a slow fashion, like cooking pasta sauce or ribs. Other actions are better done as fast as possible. A prime example of something best done as swiftly as possible is responding to the signs and symptoms of a stroke. The Centers for Disease Control, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, has coined the acronym F.A.S.T. to help the general public become aware of the best course of action to take if they believe a stroke is in progress. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel can no longer bring blood to an area of the brain, and is also called a brain attack. By remembering the F.A.S.T acronym, you can be ready to act FAST and help someone in need!

F: FACE: Ask the person to smile.

Does one side of the face droop?

A: ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms.

Does one arm drift downward?

S: SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase.

Is the speech slurred or strange?

T: TIME: If you see any of these signs call 9-1-1 right away.

A stroke is definitely a medical emergency, so calling 911 is imperative and should be done quickly to take advantage of treatments that can reverse the stroke if offered within three hours of onset.

Women have an increased risk for stroke as their age increases, their blood pressure increases and is uncontrolled, as they become less active, and if they have untreated conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Other factors unique to women may also contribute to the risk, including high blood pressure during pregnancy and certain types of birth control. And African American women are twice as likely as white women to have a stroke due to higher incidences of diabetes, high blood pressure, and being overweight.

The CDC has also developed the ABCS for heart health so that women can decrease their risk for stroke.

Aspirin: Check with your physician about the benefits of aspirin, which can help prevent the risk of stroke in some, but not all, women.

Blood Pressure: Control your blood pressure.

Cholesterol: Manage your cholesterol.

Smoking: Quit smoking or don’t start.

Getting Heart Healthy

BY OMAR & CHRISTIE question? If a relationship is new, it may be too early to know this answer. In a long-term relationship, it may have been months or years since the partners enjoyed sex, so the topic of being healthy enough for that type of activity just hasn’t “come up” in a while, if you know what we mean. And while most people assume that “Viagra-type” drugs are primarily for older men, that is hardly the case, with 40% of 40-year-old men in the U.S. having some degree of erectile dysfunction (WebMD data). The average age of Viagra users is the early-to-mid 50s. So, while this may not be a common topic of conversation on date night, it might need to be. Other health markers, such as unhealthy blood pressure, cholesterol levels, past history of problems like heart attacks, and/or being overweight can be warning signs of an unhealthy heart.

Are you one of the many women who has resolved to get healthier in 2017? You selected an inspirational weekly planner, committed your yearly goals to paper, and categorized those goals into topics like health, work, family, and spirituality. Your set of health goals inspired you to join a gym, eat right, exercise, and cut out that fourth cup of coffee before lunch. This new year is all about a healthier you, and you’re ready for a smaller dress size and bigger adventures. Knowing that the American Heart Association (AHA) declares February as Heart Month confirms just how on target you are in your plan for 2017. But one thing the AHA doesn’t include in their health advice for

February is the impact that an unhealthy heart can have on your love life. Or maybe your heart is perfectly healthy, and it’s your partner’s heart that needs medical attention. Regardless of which person in the relationship has heart concerns (or whether both hearts need care), adding “getting heart healthy” to your goals for 2017 could help your physical heart as well as your romantic one.

Most readers have heard the line from the Viagra or Cialis commercials that advises, “Before using this product check with your doctor to make sure that your heart is healthy enough for sex.” Do you know your partner well enough to be able to answer this

And if you discover the hidden bottle of Viagra by accident, take your time deciding whether to disclose your knowledge of this secret or not, depending on both the physical and emotional health of your relationship.

A heart healthy relationship is built on both physical well-being and emotional well-being.

Ignoring one or the other may result in an unhealthy love life. But don’t ignore an erection that lasts more than four hours, according to the makers of Viagra. Get medical attention immediately. And congratulate your partner on his attention to your love life!

From the Winston-Salem Time Traveler

Winston Builds a Library

The citizens of Winston thought a lot of their new Carnegie Library, shown in the postcard image at the top of the page. There are at least eight different postcards showing the Carnegie Library which tops all other public buildings for the number of postcard images. What was so special about this building, and why was its image photographed and mailed all over the United States?

Can you imagine a time in Winston-Salem’s history when there was no public library?

Winston’s graded school, named West End Graded School and located in the 800 block of West Fourth Street, was built in 1886. It was a grand structure and featured an outstanding library, particularly for a public school. But, it was only for the use of students and paid subscribers.

John Cameron Buxton, chairman of the Winston School Board, saw the need for a free circulating library to benefit students and to develop the cultural life of citizens. The Chamber of Commerce appointed Buxton chairman of “A Committee on a Public Library,” and he began his campaign to establish a free circulating library in 1900. Since elected officials were reluctant to raise taxes to fund a library, the campaign moved slowly.

Andrew Carnegie, the wealthy industrialist, came to the United States in 1846 as a child with his family after his father lost his weaving business in Scotland. Andrew had to take a job as a bobbin boy at age 13. His formal education ended when he came to the United States, but he had an admiration for libraries and took advantage of opportunities to borrow books and further his personal education. He always said that he wanted to use his wealth to provide public libraries for anyone who wanted to use them.

When he was financially secure, Andrew Carnegie embarked on a program of philanthropy that provided a gift of money to a city for a public library. It included a stipulation that the city must agree to financially support the library with 10% of the amount of the gift on an annual basis and to provide the land for the library. In North Carolina, the city of Charlotte built a library with a Carnegie gift in 1901, and Greensboro followed with a library in 1902. Buxton approached Carnegie for financial assistance with the library in 1903, and Carnegie offered $25,000. However, the Winston Board of Aldermen would only

approve a gift of $15,000 (which meant the city would pay $1,500 annually). The Salem Commissioners declined to participate in the annual obligation.

The library building committee purchased a corner lot for $2,000 at Third and Cherry Streets for the first public library. Fogle Brothers was awarded the construction contract, and the building was completed in the fall of 1905. The library had a rocky beginning when a fire broke out two days before the formal presentation to the city, but the September event proceeded as planned.

In the ensuing months, the West End School library materials were transferred to the new library. Mrs. Mary C. Prather was hired as the first librarian, and the library committee selected and purchased new books. The formal opening of the Winston Carnegie Library took place on February 14, 1906. More than 200 books were donated to the library on opening day.

The library proved a popular place from the beginning. The ground floor consisted of a lecture room seating 150 people, a committee room and a storeroom. On the main floor were located the circulation and reference rooms, the adult and juvenile reading rooms, and a storeroom. The periodicals (magazines and newspapers) were located on the top floor. In the first five years, more than 104,935 books were circulated, and there were 2,525 registered subscribers. Citizens could become a subscriber after living in Winston for a month with a personal reference.

The Carnegie Library was surrounded by buildings and streets. It quickly outgrew its space, but relief did not come until a new library was built on West Fifth Street in 1953.

Today, the former Carnegie Library houses Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Chapel, and a new library is under construction at the West Fifth Street location.

Understanding the Importance of Body Language

Body language, facial expressions, hand gestures, and eye contact are forms of non-verbal communication people can use to read others. Sometimes these actions can speak louder than words.

Understanding your body language and how others view different postures, expressions, and more can be a powerful tool, both personally and professionally.

Plus, it can help provide clarity into what someone else is thinking. These key tips will allow you to be more aware of your non-verbal communication skills and enhance your work, social, and dating relationships.

BODY LANGUAGE:

The way you carry yourself, such as walking, sitting, and standing, can say a lot about your mood and emotions.

Open palms signal honesty, openness, and a non-threatening attitude. For example, when someone takes an oath, they raise their right hand, showing an open palm. Hidden palms mean someone is uncomfortable, deceptive, or feels out of place. Especially when someone is lying or has done something wrong, they may hide their palms behind their backs or in their pockets.

When someone is protective or trying to create a barrier, they will cross their arms. However, this movement can have a few different meanings. Sometimes people will cross their arms when they are cold or are being intimidated by a figure of authority. If a person’s fists are clenched with crossed arms, it indicates stubbornness or a lack of empathy. People will cross their arms in different ways, such as at the elbows, at the wrists, or crossing the hands, to hide themselves.

When it comes to standing, if your feet are positioned far apart, it signifies power and dominance. Crossing your legs can have a few meanings, from simply being comfortable to indicating an open or defensive posture. You can tell the difference between the two by how much a person’s leg muscles are tensed – the more tensed, the more defensive.

Hands on your hips mean you are eager and ready for action.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS & HAND GESTURES:

Facial expressions are mainly universal throughout the world, while different hand gestures mean different things from country to country. A false smile can be detected if a person is only smiling with their lips. A tilt to the head shows a person is engaged and interested in the conversation, presentation, etc. However, over tilting can mean sympathy towards another

one. Someone can be seen as thinking or pondering if they are resting their hand on their cheek or they can be seen as trying to make a decision if they are rubbing their chin.

Hand gestures can be a little tricky to understand, especially when you are traveling in other countries. For example, in America, we use the thumbs up sign to mean something good and positive. However, in Thailand, Latin America, and Arabic countries, it is very offensive. Same with the peace sign (a “V” with our fingers). Here the gesture says peace or goodwill, but in Great Britain and Australia, it is the equivalent of being defiant to authority. Lastly, the OK symbol shows satisfaction and agreement in the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, and Canada.

But, in Brazil, if the sign is turned upside down, it signifies a rude gesture.

EYE CONTACT:

Growing up, most people were told to always look people in the eyes when they are speaking with them. This rule still applies today. Not looking someone in the eye shows a lack of confidence, and apprehensiveness. A widening of the eyes indicates an interest in something or someone. Also, movement of the eyes can have different meanings. For example, a person looks up and down when they are remembering images and telling the truth. They look right and down when they are questioning their feelings for something, and if they look directly right, it can be when they are creating a story and making things up.

THINGS TO AVOID:

1. Posture sometimes speaks louder than words. Don’t slouch with your shoulders drooped and neck limp. Instead, stand straight with shoulders firm with confidence, but not rigid. Also, keep your head high and legs strong.

2. Rubbing or clasping your hands together shows you are nervous and gives off the impression you don’t know what you are talking about. Try to keep your arms by your side in an open manner and use small hand gestures and movements.

3. Pacing back and forth and moving from spot to spot in a room can be very distracting, especially when speaking in front of a crowd. Don’t stay in one place, but take slow, confident steps to move about the room in a confident way. You will then portray you know your presentation material and what you are talking about.

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN METHOD OF SONGWRITING?

Usually, I'm walking or driving or doing something else deep in thought, and a melodic phrase pops into my head. I suppose it comes first as a line, and then the meter of the phrase catches my attention and my brain starts to sing it to me. It's so important to catch that line when it happens and start building on it, that I usually drop what I'm doing and start singing. It almost always feels more like something that happens to me than something I intentionally create - sort of like an intuitive channeling process. I usually know what the song is supposed to be about and who it's supposed to reach. It expands from there as the story, and the rest of the melody become clear. Some songs materialize quickly - others may take months or even years. The ones that come together quickly usually feel propelled by some energy that seems to want its voice heard. Once I was suddenly overtaken by lyrics and a melody about this cemetery where people go to bury their beloved coon hounds in North Alabama, and I ended up writing the song "Coondog Eulogy" in less than a day. I felt such a sudden emotional connection with all the dogs in the story and the grief of their owners. Later, I was shocked to find out it was National Dog Day. Songwriting is a bizarre process. It seems like there are all sorts of energies that come into play.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR WITH YOUR MUSIC?

In 2017, I'd like to continue traveling more and play more solo shows while still keeping a strong focus on our folk duet, Magpie Thief. I have most of the songs written for a new solo record and am looking forward to getting it recorded at On Pop of the World Studios. I expect there will be strong female energy that comes forward in the accompaniment and backup vocals. Each song is an empathetic look at someone's story. It's really about understanding people and seeing their struggles.

WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF THAT YOU'VE WRITTEN, AND WHY? There's an angry blues tune on the latest Magpie Thief EP called "Alabama Loud," and I guess I surprised myself with it. I don't think I've ever "let go" at that level when writing a song and captured such raw emotion. I have to give major credit to my partner, Matty Sheets, for playing blues guitar and holding space while it emerged. The song is basically my inner narrative during a heated disagreement with a neighbor who had crossed every line imaginable after contributing to the loss of a pet. We don't often get to hear women express anger, particularly where I come from, so there is definitely something empowering about expressing both the familiar process of holding it back and letting it loose in song.

I also love the Delta blues feel, because that's where my roots are.

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF THE CURRENT TRIAD MUSIC SCENE, AND WHAT KIND OF IMPROVEMENTS DO YOU THINK COULD HELP ENHANCE THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE?

I live in Greensboro and am definitely looking forward to the opening of a new venue soon on South Lewis Street here. It seems we have been looking for a good midsize venue here in town for as long as I can remember. I am also heartened by the collaboration I see between musicians in this area. Musicians really seem to look out for each other, and I don't see the competitive vibe you hear about in other scenes. I think that musicians sticking together is what will ultimately result in venues and opportunities that help musicians sustain a decent living. Deep community is what we need, and we're certainly on the right path.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A SONGWRITER?

I got bitten by the music bug after being laid up and out of work for quite awhile after a car accident, and I knew it was something that would be a big part of my life. I didn't know I'd be a songwriter until a friend who I'd been playing with called me up and said, "Well, we better get some songs written. I booked us a gig in two weeks." I said, "You did WHAT?!" He must have known that I thrive under pressure, though. I was shocked to find that songwriting came pretty naturally, and once it became a self-care practice for me as well, there was no giving it up.

WHO'S YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCE?

Before I ever had a clue I'd be writing songs, I spent years studying Bob Dylan's every word. I love his passion, integrity, and the way he presents a story. In high school, I spent hours driving up and down Alabama country roads for no reason, just to be able to listen in peace for longer. I think some part of me must have known I was learning something important from him at the time.

I knew I was a writer, but I didn't know I was a musician.

Charlie Lovett: The Lost Book of the Grail

About the Author:

Charlie Lovett was born and raised in Winston-Salem, and he and his family still call North Carolina home. An avid book collector with an ever-growing library, he is an ardent Lewis Carroll devotee. One of his primary collections is of Lewis Carroll’s work, he recently acquired Lewis Carroll’s 1888 typewriter, he has been President of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and he has written five books and numerous articles on Carroll. Charlie shared that his breakout novel, The Bookman’s Tale, a New York Times bestseller, embraced his love of rare books and the English countryside.

In addition to his fiction and non-fiction work, Charlie is also a children’s playwright; he was Writer-in-Residence at Summit School for eleven years with nineteen of his plays ultimately published.

Inspiration:

Charlie shared that sometimes a particular place is an inspiration for one of his novels. In the case of his newest book, The Lost Book of the Grail, he was inspired by the English cathedrals he remembered visiting in his high school years. The Norwich Cathedral Library intrigued his imagination; and thus, the journey begins for his readers, traveling with Arthur Prescott to uncover the history and mystery of Barchester Cathedral and its library.

Why & How I

We all know that life can be a little chaotic. Okay, maybe not just a little, but a lot! And if you’re anything like me, chaos can throw you for a loop. Meal prep and planning is one of those things that, in 10 minutes time, I can create a little bit of normalcy to what can be a hectic week of clashing schedules, overflowing to-do lists and the always unforeseen circumstance.

Some people ask why I plan our dinners out for the week and how I manage to only go to the grocery once. My answer is always because I simply don’t know any different. I grew up with a mom who spent every Sunday morning at the breakfast table planning our meals for the week. Some meals were cooked on Sunday and just reheated during the week, and some were made on the weeknight. It was always consistent with our schedules, but it was truly what I grew up thinking everyone did.

So when my husband, Evan, and I moved in together a little over two years ago, we made an agreement: I would worry about the groceries, meal planning/ prep and other various household items, if he would stay on top of our bill payments and budgeting. Essentially, I make sure the man is fed and he makes sure we have a bed and running water. So far, I’d say it’s worked out pretty well for the two of us.

I spend every Wednesday planning our meals for the week, beginning with the next Saturday to the following Thursday, leaving Friday to Chinese takeout. I typically plan around the weekly grocery circular and try to buy as much on sale as possible. This can really be a dollar saver but may also prompt a little creativity and sometimes a good Google search for recipe ideas. I then fill out a Google Sheet, which is basically a spreadsheet application you can use in Google. This sheet helps me organize meals by day, and I then fill in the appropriate grocery items that need to be picked up. For me,

it’s easiest to go day by day and then fill in the ingredients per recipe rather than going back and filling in my grocery list after the fact.

Once complete, I try to print it out and keep as a reference throughout the week although sometimes I forget and simply rewrite everything before my weekly Saturday morning grocery trip.

My goal isn’t perfection…just as good as I can get it.

While this process may seem a little crazy, or a little too organized perhaps, consider the benefits. Staying organized, focused and prepared helps me ensure that my family is eating a well-balanced meal, and prevents multiple trips to the grocery store throughout the work week (which can not only be tiresome, but pretty pricey!).

Because women are still having periods, they can still get pregnant during this time. It’s unlikely that you will experience all of these symptoms, but do keep your doctor informed. Some of these symptoms may be signs of something else (for example, racing heart, urinary changes or headaches).

It’s time we had a little chat about the “M” word (no, I don’t mean “men”). Let’s talk about menopause (gasp!). Why is this a taboo subject? We deny it. We ignore it.

We treat it like the white elephant in the room, and we tip toe around it. I was born in 1964, along with roughly 2,000,000 other women here in the United States. It is probable that we are all in the throes of menopause, but mum’s the word. Never have so many women held such a well-guarded secret! And why?! That’s just silly. I, for one, look forward to being able to say, “I’m done, what’s next?” But first, I needed to figure out what I might expect during this “change.”

Since my mother passed away before she reached this milestone, I had to consult with my physician and, of course, “Dr. Google.” There are a few universal signs and symptoms experienced by many women, but these may vary based on the individual.

Most women begin in their 40s and 50s – the national average age is 51. The process is broken into three stages: PERIMENOPAUSE, MENOPAUSE, and POSTMENOPAUSE.

PERIMENOPAUSE (or transition menopause), is often the longest phase. It can last between 10 months and four years. During this time a woman’s body produces less and less estrogen. Because of this, many women experience the following symptoms: • Hot flashes, night sweats and/or cold flashes • Vaginal dryness; discomfort during sex • Urinary urgency • Delayed or disrupted sleep • Irritability, mood swings, mild depression • Dry skin, eyes or mouth

• Breast tenderness

• Headaches

• Worsening of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

• Joint and muscle aches and pains

• Irregular periods or missed periods

• Diminished sex drive

• Bleeding that is heavier or lighter than usual

• Difficulty concentrating, temporary memory lapses

They might also experience:

• Weight gain

• Racing heart

• Hair loss or thinning

Menopause officially begins after a woman misses her period for 12 consecutive months. At this point, the body has stopped releasing eggs.

Estrogen production is decreasing.

Postmenopause is the final phase and includes the years after menopause. Most symptoms will have ceased by or before the fifth year following menopause.

It’s important to note that with decreasing estrogen production, some women may be at risk for other health conditions, including osteoporosis and heart disease. Talk to your doctor if your family has a history of these.

Ask him or her about healthy lifestyle changes that might reduce the risk of these conditions.

Even though it doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, there are some things we can do to ease some of the discomfort.

• Night sweats – Avoid sugar and alcohol at least 4 hours before bed.

These tend to ramp up the body’s thermogenics. Sleep in little or nothing at all, and invest in a good oscillating fan.

• Bladder urgency, muscle and joint pain, temporary weight gain (usually in the tummy) and stress – Practice yoga stretching (20 minutes) and walking (30 minutes) daily. These activities will help to loosen up joints and strengthen core muscles and, as a daily routine, is a highly effective way to manage temporary weight gain and stress levels.

And here is some even better news!

Some women will not experience any symptoms during menopause. It’s true!

There is a great deal of evidence that one’s attitude about aging is directly related to one’s level of discomfort.

Most of these studies are culturally based. For example, in the US and the UK, aging for women is stigmatized.

These women suffer more symptoms than in countries that revere aging women. None were reported in China where menopause is a time for rejoicing.

It is called a “Second Spring.” In Greece, women rarely report discomfort. Aging women are held in higher esteem in their culture, much like their Goddess “Gerontissa” or “the Eldress.” So in the end, the signs, symptoms, and strategies are good information, but I think I would rather celebrate my Second Spring. Just call me Gerontissa!

Might as Well JUMP into Risk!

The term is all wrong. We should never consider ourselves “lucky” to survive the days “chances;” instead, we must count our blessings of good fortune. Every day, our decisions have a margin of risk, and the outcome is never 100 percent certain; yet, as safe as our actions may be, we “risk” everything without even knowing it. While we may be unlikely to walk or drive blindfolded by choice, there are some risks everyone should willingly take. Isn’t living also associated with facing our fears and agreeing to accept the adventure? We were meant to jump feet first in order to make mistakes and realize small to big “risks” can be positive worthwhile experiences.

Taking a New Route: Without the guidance of passengers or a GPS, we are left with our own thoughts, seated behind the wheel to make decisions. How often do you chance the road unknown, and decide at the last minute to turn left instead of continuing down the usual path? How you handle situations determines what happens next. Do you respond feeling tense and wrought with panic, or is the moment filled with excitement? We have all been down the road of uncertainty, where the only “hope” of reaching a destination required intelligence and logic, perseverance and ample time. Sometimes, the road feels endless; yet, in reflection, the experience often reveals information about our impulses, decision-making processes and our character. Yes, veering off the path may be problematic, but worth the trouble.

Risk Failing: Criticism and embarrassment may be the worst things that can happen when we allow our pride or emotions to interfere with learning new life lessons. Perhaps, it’s time to risk presenting new ideas or tactics, extending our hand to be introduced to new employers or clients, and stepping outside our comfort to begin a new business, hobby or investment in our future happiness. You never know when taking a risk may lead to greater achievement!

On the other hand, I know some people who just don’t like breakfast. They skip it most of the time.

My grandmother is one of these people. She says that when she does eat breakfast, she finds that she stays hungrier throughout the day. Other people, my husband, for example, needs a couple of hours to get fully awake before he is ready for breakfast.

And for him, breakfast is most certainly not oatmeal or eggs. His ideal breakfast consists of leftovers from dinner the night before.

Breakfast As important as mornings are for me, I was shocked when I realized that I hadn’t yet written about breakfast in a B.E. Healthy article! When you think of breakfast, I’d be willing to bet that one of the first things that comes to your mind is, “It’s the most important meal of the day!” While I believe this to be true for me, I don’t believe that it’s true for everyone. For me, eating a very large breakfast is crucial to my day. If I was, for some reason, forced to choose one meal to skip, I would never, ever choose to skip breakfast.

When I do skip breakfast, I’ve noticed I am more tired and irritable, and have cravings for not-so-healthy foods. Missing this one meal, for me, can wreak havoc on my entire day.

If you’ve been a consistent reader of this column, you probably know how my morning routine goes. I wake up early, drink a ton of water, drink a cup of coffee, meditate, go work out and then return home and eat a big breakfast.

I choose to do fasted workouts, but I realize that doesn’t work for everyone.

I work out better on an empty stomach, but I know others can’t have a good workout without eating something before. My post-workout breakfast usually consists of oatmeal with fruit or bacon (or sausage) and eggs with a slice of rye toast.

I mention these three scenarios to show you how different we all are. There is no “right” way.

Breakfast does not have to be at a particular time of day nor does it have to consist of typical breakfast fare. Try out different things and see what works best for you. If you eat breakfast, do you find that you stay hungrier throughout the day? Or do you find that breakfast is a necessity to keep your hunger in check? Do you wake up hungry and ready to eat a large breakfast? If so, eat a big breakfast!

If, on the other hand, you wake up not hungry at all, don’t force yourself to eat breakfast. Wait until your body is ready to eat and then feed it!

Regardless of when / where / how / what you eat for breakfast, I encourage you to listen to your body and eat something that will fuel it in the best way. This fuel will be different for everyone. Take into account how much you are moving throughout the day and how different foods make you feel hours later. You may find that eating a big bowl of cereal in the morning makes you feel fatigued mid-morning. In my opinion, a lot of cereals are full of sugar and don’t do the best job at keeping you full. If this is true for you, try to incorporate more protein into your breakfast. Whatever your breakfast fare consists of, make sure it’s something you enjoy eating (but still makes your body feel good), and that you are eating it at a time when your body is hungry for it.

One of my favorite things to do is online shopping. It’s easy and convenient. Is there anything better than having your purchases arrive on your doorstep, without having to deal with traffic and crowds to get them? With all of the advantages of online shopping, there is one disadvantage: saving money. It can be hard to shop without using a discount code or keeping track of how much you are spending.

However, never fear, there are ways to add money to your wallet while shopping online.

• As with any type of shopping, always look for coupons first. Websites like couponmom.com and retailmenot.com are places to search for discount and promotional codes to use. Also, see if there is an option for free shipping.

Sometimes when you sign up for a free trial membership on a website, there is free shipping for a certain amount of time. Another tactic is googling the online store with the words “coupon code.” Try finding several codes and then decide which one will help you save the most.

• Speaking of shipping, try to avoid the fees. If you spend a certain amount, the store will offer free shipping in return.

Try to think of everything you might need and purchase at one time. If you can’t avoid the extra cost, add the shipping into your budget for the site.

That way you won’t overspend.

• See if a retailer is on social media and give them a “like” or “follow.” Many merchants will post special sales and promotions on the sites.

• Sign up for a store’s email list for coupons and special offers. Some retailers will give you a discount just for signing up. Also, there are online only coupons.

• Some sites will allow you to “subscribe” for items you purchase often. In the future, you’ll save time with reordering and the site will give you a percentage off for being a frequent buyer.

• Just because you favor one website over another, doesn’t mean that site will always have the best buys.

Research the product’s name on the Internet before making your final purchase. This way you’ll know where you are getting the best buy and a possible discount code could pop up. Also, don’t get hung up on one certain brand, especially if it is popular. Similar products can be just as good or better and might be less expensive.

• If you do a lot of online shopping, create an alternative email address for that purpose only. Check the email often for deals and coupons. Also, this prevents junk mail from clogging up your main email address. Also, stores can give your address to other businesses to send you promotional material.

• Plan out your shopping to where you shop a few days ahead of purchasing your items. For example, add the products to your shopping cart and then leave it alone for a few days. During that time, the retailer could let you know you haven’t completed your purchase. They might also provide you with a discount to persuade you to spend money on their site. Being patient can pay off.

• When it comes to booking trips and cruises, there is a chance for last minute deals. Last minute booking sites will offer prices at low rates, due to it being the off-season or based on cancellations received.

• If possible, buy used. With items such as toiletries, food, and others, this is not an option. But with books, games, clothing, etc. most of the time, buying used will be a lower price than brand new. One time in college, I bought a used book for two cents, compared to over a hundred dollars brand new.

• Lastly, if online shopping is your most common method of shopping, ask for gift cards during the holidays and for your birthday. It is like asking for a gift certificate to your favorite store, just online. Stack up your gift card with discount codes for extra savings on your favorite sites.

Online shopping can be fun, time-saving, and stress-free. Just don’t let your final total get away from you. The tips above will help prevent that and give you more chances to save.

From B12 to Valerian: How Herbs and Plants Can Assist Your Health and Wellness

BY LISA S.T. DOSS Our diets include wonderful sources of vitamins and minerals. Spinach, for instance, contains the best source for iron to deliver energy-sustaining oxygen to our cells, while peas, beans, and peanuts contain magnesium, which promotes memory function. In our quest to gain good nutrition, there is another way to ensure our bodies receive adequate servings of essential vitamins and minerals. One way to learn about a variety of natural supplements is to start learning how minerals, plants, and roots can improve your health.

A Brief List: B12: Only found in animal products such as eggs, meat, shellfish (such as clams and mussels), and dairy, B12 is crucial for a healthy brain and immune system, and helps make DNA, nerve, and blood cells.

Chamomile: As an infusion, the leaves of German

chamomile can calm an upset stomach, aid in relaxation and encourage sleep; however, the dried flower heads can be made into a liquid extract (tinctures) or combined in a cream. As a result, the possibilities broaden to treat chest colds, slow-healing wounds, and skin conditions (diaper rashes, chicken pox, and eczema.) In a few months, you can plant chamomile, of the family Asteraceae, in the garden.

Cinnamon: It’s good to know the sweet flavoring of cinnamon has a contribution to our well-being. Taken as a supplement, research has discovered cinnamon may lower cholesterol and blood sugar, and reduce inflammations.

Cranberry: Due to their high antioxidant content,

cranberries not only are a super food but reduce the risk of urinary tract infections, decrease blood pressure and improve immune function. (Taking cranberry capsules are much more effective than consuming cranberry juice. The drink will serve only to aid in hydrating the body.)

Echinacea: Feeling the onset of a cold? One solution is to be proactive and begin taking a supplement of Echinacea. It can help boost immunity and fight harmful infections and bacteria. You may recognize the beautiful Echinacea plant by another name, coneflower.

Fish Oil: Eating fish enriched in Omega-3 fatty acids, which includes cod liver, herring, mackerel, salmon and tuna, has wonderful health benefits. If taken as a supplement, fish oil has the potential to lower triglyceride levels and improve conditions related to the heart and blood systems. Those who are not keen on taking fish oil may consider flaxseed.

Flaxseed: There is a wonderful list of benefits for the

body - inside and out. While flaxseed encourages healthy skin, hair, and has a propensity to strengthen nails, it also improves digestion, lowers cholesterol, and aids as a treatment for hot flashes, breast pain, and arthritis.

Enriched as an Omega-3, flaxseed can be taken as a pill or oil, or you can sprinkle the seeds into a variety of foods.

Ginger: The root of ginger is often an ingredient in food; however, it is truly a medicine. Commonly used to treat an upset stomach, ginger can aid respiratory problems, back pain, and severe headaches. The oil extracted from ginger can be applied to relieve insect bites or burns.

Ginkgo Biloba: While it is linked to improving blood flow to the eyes, and preventing inner ear disturbances, Ginkgo biloba has been used medicinally for thousands of years. The herb can be found in the following foods: avocados, bananas, aged cheeses, figs, pickled herring, and liver.

St. John’s Wort: Studies have found that the

supplement in pill form is effective for those suffering from mild to moderate depression, anxiety disorders, and insomnia. As a plant, there are no natural food sources linked to St. John’s wort.

Thyme: Love the flavor thyme offers to select homemade meals?

Well, continue to use it! It has healing properties to fight infection, reduce migraines, and assist with respiratory difficulties.

Valerian:

Made from a root, valerian is used to aid in sleep disorders, especially insomnia; however, it is also used to treat conditions related to anxiety, headaches, and depression. Valerian is often a substitute for those trying to withdraw from prescription sleeping pills.

Please be aware, before you begin a new regimen of supplemental vitamins, check with your doctor first. The dosage will depend on your age, diet, medical conditions, and current medications.

SHRUTI TANNAN, MD

Shruti Tannan, MD, is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Her path began at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, followed by undergraduate and medical school at the University of North Carolina.

There, she became fluent in Spanish during her inspirational study abroad trip, where she was a student by day and a volunteer doula in an obstetric hospital by night.

She discovered an intense passion for teaching while completing her surgical training at the University of Virginia and the Hand Center of San Antonio. Presently, she enthusiastically educates plastic and hand surgery trainees at Wake Forest. She also mentors medical students and undergraduates, with a special focus on mentoring the next generation of women to help them realize their dreams of cultivating successful careers and a fulfilling personal and family life.

In her practice, she cares for a wide range of patients, from newborns with congenital hand problems to adults needing reconstructive surgery after cancer. She performs minimally invasive carpal tunnel surgery and takes care of hand and wrist problems ranging from arthritis to tendinitis, and nerve and blood vessel problems. She also performs cosmetic surgery of the face and body. This diverse practice allows her to improve her patients’ functional and overall quality of life in many ways, while also utilizing her expertise.

She is active in the Office of Women and Medicine in Science at Wake Forest as well as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. She takes her responsibility to care for patients to the highest level, sharing her unique approach to patient care with students and resident trainees to maximize her impact on enhanced patient care around the globe.

A Pediatrician

4:50 a.m.

Betsy Armentrout’s daily alarm began to chime.

She peeked out of the window: pitch black.

The early mornings didn’t bother Betsy; she believed you must practice what you preach, and this time, in her packed day-to-day life, was her time to exercise.

She and her husband snuck out of the sleeping house, got in the car, and drove, headlights ablaze, and radio whispering, to the YMCA. Betsy, her husband, and devoted friend dove into the pool and raced each other through the water in the echoing poolroom, feeling the crisp water revitalizing them for the long day ahead.

By 7:50 the kids were fed, dressed and on their way to school and Betsy was pushing open the door to her office at Ford, Simpson, Lively and Rice Pediatrics.

Greetings were called here and there between the other doctors, nurses and staff.

The Christmas holidays were at a close, thought Betsy as she dropped her purse by her desk chair and woke up her computer, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the many excuses the festivities provided for the staff to get together. Besides, she reminded herself, Valentine’s Day is approaching, which is another time for gift giving and community and the staff is closer than ever.

Dr. Stewart arrived minutes later, enthusiastic for the day, and Dr. Erickson, a close friend and neighbor bustled in, lunch bag under her arm, purse in hand, and laptop and paperwork bag over her shoulder. Betsy jumped up to help as Dr. Erickson panted, “I hit the morning traffic big time. I usually beat it, you know, I thought I was going to be late for sure! I have an early patient.” She collapsed in her chair. “Thanks, Betsy,” she said as Betsy handed her her lunch.

She checked her watch, “We should probably get going; the kids are probably ready.”

At that moment, one of Betsy’s favorite nurses pushed open the office door. “Room 102, Dr. Erickson and,” she checked a chart, “84, Dr. Armentrout.”

“Thank you,” they said as they made their way past her toward their designated examination rooms.

“Talk to you at lunch!” Betsy called as the two parted ways along the bright white and green hallways. Dr. Erickson waved.

Hours later Betsy was back behind her desk.

I must have seen at least a dozen patients already she thought, tapping the keyboard of her snoozing computer.

Now, for the fun part, she thought with a smirk. If charting wasn’t a part of the job she loved so much, she was sure she could do it forever.

As it was, the happiness she felt at seeing familiar patients and helping them get and remain well also came with the bothersome charting responsibility.

It was almost lunchtime, and she had filled out six of the ten patient charts before Drs. Erickson and Stewart arrived to pull out their packed lunches.

Betsy had packed her favorite: a homemade veggie burger with spicy black beans. She went with her lunch mates to the break room and slid the burger into the toaster oven.

“I asked if she drank soda often,” Betsy was saying, discussing a little girl she had had a meeting with earlier. “And she said, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s my favorite. I drink it at every meal,’ and her mom’s eyes got really wide; she was so embarrassed.”

“I love kids, they are always so honest,” put in Dr. Erickson. “I had a little boy who had a whole argument with his dad about whether or not he wore a seatbelt all the time. The little boy insisted that there was ‘that one time’ when the dad backed out of the driveway and the little boy didn’t have a seatbelt on yet.”

Betsy grinned indulgently. She loved laughing throughout the day with a whole range of kids, from newborns and toddlers who came to the office in the arms of their parents, to primary and middle schoolers who arrived brimming with stories of youthful life, to independent high schoolers and nearly college graduates.

When days dragged, and the paperwork, prescriptions, and phone calls threatened to overwhelm her, Betsy would remember all of the things she loved about being a pediatrician. She remembered her goal: to help children maximize their health and, with the help of their parents, to work as a team to get and stay healthy, and help them navigate both physical and mental health concerns.

Betsy packed her bag at 5:00 pm, said goodbye to her friends and exited her office. It had been a long day, and she had seen 23 patients. She still had some charting to do, but, that was the job, she reminded herself.

After picking up her own two boys, Betsy headed home to enjoy time with her family and prepare for another rewarding day as a pediatrician.

SHEPHERD’S PIE

1 lb. ground beef ¼ tsp. black pepper ½ c. onion (chopped) 2 c. frozen vegetables 1 tsp. vegetable oil 1 12 oz. jar beef gravy 1 clove garlic (pressed) 2 c. instant mashed potatoes ½ tsp. salt ½ c. shredded cheddar cheese ½ tsp. dried thyme (optional)

February is National Pie Month. A one-dish meal seemed a great idea for the cold, busy days of February. This recipe hits the spot with protein, some carbs, and veggies all in one dish. Add some crusty bread and a glass of cold milk, and you’ve got a hearty meal.

• Brown the ground beef and drain.

• Heat the vegetable oil in skillet over medium heat and add onion and garlic.

Cook two to three minutes until tender, stirring often.

• Stir in ground beef.

• Add salt, pepper, and thyme.

• Add frozen vegetables (I used mixed veggies) and gravy.

• Bring mixture to a boil; then spoon into baking dish.

• Prepare instant potatoes according to package directions. Add ½ the cheese to the potatoes.

• Pipe the potatoes around the edge of the casserole. (I didn’t have a piping bag, so I put the potatoes into a zip lock bag and snipped the edge off to create a makeshift-piping bag.)

• Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Add the rest of the cheese over the casserole once it comes out of the oven.

• Let stand five minutes before serving.

For several years, our wonderful and generous publishers, Keela Johnson and Robin Bralley, hosted their magazine staffers to a fabulous dinner at Fabian’s Restaurant in appreciation of their work throughout the year.

Each February, Rosey’s Review highlighted the amazing meal prepared by the incomparable chef, Bill Smith.

This year’s article will not expound on the incredible food or the camaraderie because our entire community lost not only a remarkable chef, but a dear friend when Bill suddenly passed away last June.

If you were ever lucky enough to dine at Fabian’s, then you know what a very special place it was. Bill’s creativeness and expertise were evident in every dish that came out of his kitchen. Teaming up with his wife Diana and loyal staff, dining at Fabian’s was always a wonderful experience.

Loving the concept of the restaurant – one nightly seating serving five courses – Bill took over Fabian’s when Chef Fabian Botta moved to the coast. Bill had worked with Botta for a number of years and prepared a number of the recipes for which the restaurant was known, while adding his own dishes that quickly became favorites as well. According to his wife, Bill was a true chef, making his own recipes and rarely writing anything down, unfortunately for all of us. At the beginning of each seating, Chef Smith came out of the kitchen to entice

us with the evening’s menu. You were first told about the appetizer, followed by soup and salad, and then you had to make the difficult choice between the five or more entrees being offered, and the choice among three or more desserts.

These were never easy decisions, but ones you could never go wrong in making.

Many did not know of Bill’s painful struggle with rheumatoid arthritis and the toll it took on his body. He was blessed and cursed with a strong work ethic, thereby denying himself the proper time away from his passion to rest. He truly loved his profession. It didn’t matter how many exhausting hours he had already put in or how much pain he was in, Bill would push through, always with an infectious smile and a laugh. Often he would notice another tenant in the building working late hours and bring food to them as a kindness. Words used to describe Bill by those who knew him were always adjectives in the “kind, generous, loving and caring” vein. Food was his life, and sharing it was his mission.

“We loved having our team dinners at Fabian’s,” said Keela Johnson, publisher of Forsyth Woman.

“Bill’s personal touch of coming out to greet our team added a special touch that is absent from most typical dining experiences. His explanation of the meals he was preparing was something that our team looked forward to; it made us feel like we were being cooked for by a friend.”

“Bill was a man of great talents but a humble spirit,” added Robin Bralley, publisher of Forsyth Family. “After our meal was complete, he would come out with a shy smile to see if we had enjoyed it. And ‘enjoy’ was never a truly adequate word.

Bill’s graciousness added an element of charm to a truly delightful dining experience.”

“While I didn’t know Bill well, I was always very impressed with his hospitality and, of course, his culinary talents were second to none!” said Denise Heidel, project manager for Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family. “He was kind, gracious and always eager to accommodate specific dinner requests.

I think he saw those moments as a personal challenge and was always determined to exceed the expectations of his dining audience.”

Taboos

What do you think when you hear the word ‘taboo’? The word alone conjures images.

They vary greatly from person to person, but the impact is the same. We push back and think, “Oh, no, that I cannot do, or see, or say.” It’s the line we draw. Taboos are the socially or culturally imposed restrictions that often act as our compass. These steer us away from things we shouldn’t say, places we ought not to go, food we must avoid, and even inappropriate gestures. But have you ever wondered whether, if it is taboo to me, is it taboo to you, too?

A taboo is defined as “a social or religious custom prohibiting or forbidding discussion of a particular practice or forbidding association with a particular person, place, or thing” or something that is “prohibited or restricted by social custom.” Taboos can be found everywhere around the world and some may be more familiar than others. Here are a few:

CULTURAL/RELIGIOUS FOOD TABOOS • Orthodox Jews are forbidden to eat pork, as well as shellfish.

• Muslims are also forbidden to eat pork.

• Hindus consider it taboo to eat beef. This is not to say they worship cows, which is a common misconception. Rather the cow is revered as the source of food and symbol of life. Therefore, the cow should not be killed.

• When dining in Japan, you must never place your chopsticks vertically in your bowl.

Chopsticks placed vertically in a bowl signal an offering to the deceased. You must also take care not to point at someone with your chopsticks, as it is considered very rude and impolite.

• And then there is cannibalism.

Rare, but still practiced today, this is probably the greatest known food taboo. The reasons for cannibalism vary depending on tribe, region, ritual, and belief.

In Varansi, India, for example, for the Aghori Babas, the greatest fear is of their own death. They believe it is the greatest fear of all people. This fear creates a barrier between them and spiritual enlightenment. And what better way to overcome one’s fear and achieve enlightenment, then by confronting it? The solution?

Ritually consume the dead, thus breaking down the barrier.

GESTURE TABOOS

Every culture has assigned meanings to body language and gestures. Here, we have ‘the one-finger salute.’

You’ve seen it, maybe in rush hour traffic? (Not by you, of course!) We KNOW about that one. However, when traveling abroad there are some that we wouldn’t think twice about using, and you probably should. To us, these gestures seem innocent enough, but in other parts of the world, they are anything but innocent.

• In the UK, raising two fingers in a “V” shape and palm inward means the same thing as raising our middle finger. So, if you want to shoot someone the peace sign, be sure to keep your palm facing outward!

• In Asia, especially Thailand, never pat someone’s head or pass anything over a person’s head, especially that of an elder. A person’s head is deemed sacred. This is considered the ultimate insult.

• In Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, the left hand has only one use: personal hygiene. Therefore, it is unclean to use it for any other purpose. That means you can never use your left hand to shake another person’s hand, write, or even eat. My sincere apologies to all the lefties out there.

Are any of these taboo for you? Cultural curiosities remind us that what is true for us, may not be true for others, and our differences are fascinating! Never before have we had such exposure to cultures different from our own, and we believe our lives are richer for it.

“In memory everything seems to happen to music.” ~ Tennessee Williams Baby boomer music was and is special; then it was the birth of rock ‘n roll – now, it’s classic rock ‘n roll. I bet a certain song takes you back to a special time of your youth. Some songs do that for me, too.

One of my earliest favorites was “Leader of the Pack” by The Shangri-Las. I remember listening to it when I was supposed to be studying or sleeping.

Maybe it was that motorcycle sound at the end that always got my attention. In my teen years, I loved The Monkees and watched their show whenever I could. I remember at the last senior assembly in high school, someone played “Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog” by Three Dog Night; ever since, I’ve associated graduating from high school with that song. “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart (Sir Rod Stewart now) is the song that I identify with going to college.

I remember listening to it driving to and from campus.

Elvis: Need I say more? Probably not. “Jailhouse Rock”

released in 1957. It was number one on the British singles; it did not climb to number one; it came out as number one. Fitting, considering the influence Elvis’ music had on The Beatles.

Buddy Holly: “That’ll Be The Day” also released in 1957. The song was inspired by a John Wayne movie, “The Searchers.” This was the first song recorded by The Quarrymen who later changed their name to The Beatles.

Cubby Checker: I still remember “The Twist.” At my elementary school dance, that song was featured as part of the dance contest. “The Twist” hit number one twice -- in 1960 and 1962. It still has the power to get everybody on his or her feet “to do the twist”…and then pay for it later!

The Beatles: I’m sure my Dad got thoroughly sick of hearing “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” Their early songs have always been my favorites.

The Beach Boys: They had a sound all their own...that California sound. They spent eight months just on “Good Vibrations.” Their car songs were my personal favorite.

Instrumental Rock ‘n Roll: How about “Green Onions” by Booker T & the MG’s,

“Walk Don’t Run” by The Ventures, and my all-time favorite, “Wipe Out” by The Surfaris.

Think about the singers and songs you loved in your youth. Your list likely has completely different artists and songs. I could venture off to folk music, which I loved then and now -- who could resist Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Puff the Magic Dragon.” I even learned that during my piano lesson days.

Funny. Some things never change. When we were young and listening to “our” music, our parents couldn’t stand it any more than we could tolerate the hair bands and metal music of our kids’ generation.

I have no comment on whatever our grandchildren listen to; I can’t understand the words over the screaming (and that’s probably a good thing).

Tips & Tricks for Making Life Easier

There are countless problems you encounter on a daily basis that can put a little speed bump in your day. Life hacks are those “a-ha!” moments where you find the simplest solution to your daily problems, often using items immediately at your disposal. Each month this column will take you through some creative hacks to use in all different areas of your life to make your day to day as simple as possible. For February we’ll explore hacks to get you through cold and flu season.

Unless you have issues with allergies or children in your home, you may not have a use for a humidifier until you find yourself ill.

Instead of dragging yourself out to the store to pick one up and sharing your contagious misfortune with others, try pulling out your crock-pot instead. Fill your crockpot with warm tap water and turn the heat setting to high (without putting the lid on, of course). Keep it running in the room where you’re resting and enjoy the relieving steam it provides.

Whether you’re sick or you’re caring for a sick loved one, it can be tricky staying on top of taking or giving medicine on schedule every day. Try drawing a diagram on the back or side of your meds that allows you to place an “x” or check mark in a box each time you are to give the medicine and keep a Sharpie next to the bottle or container. Now, after that drug induced slumber, you won’t have to worry about remembering whether you took your meds on time or not.

Shower bombs are a lifesaver when you’re painfully stuffy and need a little extra kick in a steamy shower. Before you find yourself sick, try making your own VapoRub shower bombs to have on hand when the dreaded stuffy head and cough hits you. You’ll need three tablespoons of VapoRub, one cup of cornstarch, food coloring (optional), two tablespoons of water, and wax paper. Add the VapoRub to the bowl and stir in the cornstarch until mixed well.

Add the water and, once smooth, mix in food coloring if you wish.

Scoop the mixture into your hand and knead into a ball or disc and set on wax paper and freeze for a few hours. Store in a sealed jar or Tupperware bowl and place one on the shower floor near the drain as needed.

When a cold or flu hits, the last thing you want to do is pick up behind yourself because you’re too weak to go back and forth to the trash can.

Grab a rubber band and a fresh box of tissues and an empty box of tissues and connect them together.

Now you have a mini trashcan to keep your recovery space neat while you recover.

If you’re suffering from the stomach flu, you’ll find yourself weak so make sure you have a way to keep your sickness contained no matter where you are in your home. Line a small trashcan with several layers of plastic grocery bags and wrap a rubber band around the rim of the trashcan lid. As you need to use the receptacle you can easily take out the bag without any major cleanup.

The most important thing you can do after getting over a cold or the flu is to disinfect the house as quickly as possible to prevent your loved ones from picking up the bug or going through a second round yourself.

Lysol spray and wipes should be your best friend now. Don’t forget to hit the most commonly used, but most overlooked, areas in your home such as light switches, door knobs, remote controls and electronics, stair banisters, toilet flushers, and faucets and handles, and be sure to spray down soft surfaces like couches and mattresses.

“My life has no purpose.” “I’ll never be anything great.” “I’m too quiet to do this…too fragile to do that.” “I don’t believe in me…”

Everyone has bad habits that they need to break. A bad habit I dealt with was negative thinking. There was a time not too long ago when negative thoughts swirled around in my mind, and I didn’t know why I had this problem. I knew one thing: that this negative way of thinking was a terrible habit of mine that I needed to break.

Here is how I did it.

I joined a business where I had to sell healthy coffee and part of the job involved speaking to strangers practically every single day. As a shy introvert, this terrified me. The more I learned about the business, the more I found out that negative thinking was not an option. I wanted to become better, stronger, and more confident in myself so I knew I had to break this terrible habit of negative thinking.

During the process of breaking my habit, I listened to inspirational audio—such as The Secret audiobook—and read books such as Think And Grow Rich and also wrote down positive affirmations (positive statements about oneself or a situation that you want to see come to life). There is one statement from Earl Nightingale’s The Secret that really stuck with me, which is that, “We become what we think about.”

If we have thoughts of success and confidence, that is what we will become; if we have thoughts of fear and failure, we could become that as well. What an awakening truth! If there was nothing else that broke me out of my pessimistic thinking, that statement was it!

HELPFUL TIPS:

SET GOALS FOR YOURSELF. Make them realistic and doable. Set small personal goals every single day by starting off small and gradually moving on to the more challenging goals. For example, if you have a bad habit of falling asleep mega late at night—very much like myself— try going to bed an hour later than you normally do for a week. Then the week after that, try another hour earlier than you did the previous week. Keep persisting every week until you’ve reached your desired bedtime.

REPLACE YOUR BAD HABIT WITH A HEALTHIER ONE. Find ways to replace negative thoughts with more positive ones, like I did. If your bad habit is one that can be replaced with a healthier habit, give it a try!

ASK OTHERS TO HELP YOU BREAK OUT OF YOUR BAD HABIT. You may never know just how your habits look to other people. Your family and closest friends could be your greatest coaches and supporters to help you break free from whatever bad habit you have.

GIVE YOURSELF TIME. Breaking bad habits could take weeks, months, or even years. Be realistic in goal setting and don’t get discouraged if breaking that habit takes too long. Depending on the habit, it could take either sooner or longer to break. Patience is key.

PRAY TO BE DELIVERED FROM YOUR BAD HABIT. This tip is for the firm believers in Christ, like me.

Prayer is powerful, and faith will take you further than you could ever imagine. Tell God that you desire to be free from your unhealthy habits, and He will make a way for you to be delivered from it. He will show you many alternatives that you can take instead of engaging in your bad habits.

WRITE DOWN POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS AND SPEAK THEM OVER YOUR LIFE. This tip may or may not be necessary depending on your habit, but there is power in written and spoken affirmations. For instance, if you write down on a small index card, “I am happy and grateful that I have been delivered from smoking cigarettes,” and if you truly believe it, that truth will start to manifest itself in your life.

It’s the lovely month of February. Now is the time to celebrate all kinds and types of love, right? But I must agree with the poet, Phyllis McGinley, who questioned the timing of the month to celebrate love in the middle of winter.

POOR TIMING I sing of Saint Valentine, his day, I spread abroad his rumor – A gentleman, it’s safe to say, Who owned a sense of humor.

Most practical of jokers, he, Who bade sweethearts make merry With flowers and birds and amorous words, In the month of February.

The antic, frantic, Unromantic Middle of February… ...When blizzards rage with might and main And a man’s best friend’s his muffler, Pity the February swain That sentimental snuffler, Whose soul must surge, whose pulse must throb With passionate credenza, When he yearns instead for a cozy bed Alone with influenza.

I think the poet has a very good point, don’t you? Many times my husband and I have rescheduled Valentine dinners or celebrations due to bad weather occurring in February. It is not uncommon for school Valentine/ Sweetheart Dances to be rescheduled or postponed due to weather complications as well.

Many of you have probably re-made cupcakes for school Valentine parties when dates were changed.

But whether you celebrate love on February 14 or another day, the important thing is that you celebrate love. Valentine’s Day is not just the marketing brainstorm of the floral and card industry to boost sales between Christmas and Easter. It is a very important day celebrating, honoring, recognizing our most human trait: love.

Five Tips in the Name of Beauty

DOSS Even in her early 90s, my grandmother still claimed beautiful skin was nothing more than a splash of water on soapy skin, a moisturizer to minimize the creases of old age and great genes. She was right! Her beauty regime was simplistic and left her skin soft and youthful. As women, we pull and pluck, and have individual ways to achieve a desired, natural beauty using the products we love. Have you ever wondered if aspects of your routine are necessary? In returning to the simple care of our face, here are five tips to reaffirm the need to continue, and possibly expand personal pampering.

1. Drink Water Throughout the Day

Beautiful, radiant skin is established by drinking eight, eight-ounce glasses of water every day. Start your morning with the first glass. Hydration will show immediately on your exposed areas such as you face and hands. Do not wait until you are thirsty; begin the habit of drinking water or even research cucumber and other types of infused water combinations.

2. Washing Your Face

To prevent irritating the skin, it is advised to wash your face with only your fingertips. Use warm water (to help lift the dirt from your skin) and a non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol. (Cream cleansers will aid in hydrating the skin while gel cleansers remove makeup.)

Rubbing will lead to stretching the skin and promote additional wrinkles; therefore, pat your wet skin with a towel. While washing your face after a workout is necessary, it is recommended to only wash in the morning and night.

3. A Moisturizer

The experts claim there are approximately 10 different skin types ranging from dry to normal to oily. While the most essential “product” is the moisturizer, it is important to determine your skin type and find exactly what your skin needs. Most moisturizers combine SPF, which is beneficial during the day; however, allowing the skin to breathe at night requires a “light moisturizer.”

To eliminate clogged pores, begin the application at the middle of the face and push outwards, ensuring to include the chin and neck. Only one application is necessary.

Tip: To fight wrinkles, you can use an antioxidant-rich moisturizer or serum. While having a lighter texture, serums will deposit moisture and penetrate further to hydrate your skin.

4. A Weekly Face Mask

Concerned about hydrating dry skin, removing excess oils, improving the appearance of pores or want to extract impurities, the answer is to apply a face mask weekly.

There is a term for combination skin called “multi-masking.” It involves applying multiple treatments to improve those areas that require individualized attention. For instance, dry skin requires a moisturizing mask containing the ingredients glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Oil-prone skin should use alternately an exfoliating mask and a clay-based treatment. Before removing the multi-mask, drape a hot towel over the face or try steam to help those thicker textures to soften, which will ease the removal process.

Tip: While you are waiting 10 to 15 minutes, apply cucumbers over your eyes and enjoy the time in sweet contentment. Cucumbers contain 95% water and vitamins E and potassium; therefore, they are perfect for moisturizing the skin while acting as an anti-wrinkle treatment to reduce fine lines and blemishes.

Tip: Is your toner “alcohol based?” If so, there are other products which can help remove impurities and cleanse the skin. One solution is to either replace with a natural non-alcohol based toner or the cream or gel cleanser to wash your face.

5. Know Your Ingredients

It’s not about the brand name or the price of a product. The only things that matters are the ingredients. On the bottle or jar, you will notice the order will list the highest concentrations first according to the percentages.

You can determine how much of an active ingredient you want to either have or avoid. Further research will help you avoid the following -incomplete - list of harmful chemicals: Alcohol and Isopropyl (SD40), aluminum, synthetic colors (FD&C or D&C), Propylene Glycol (PG), 1,4- dioxane, acrylates, formaldehyde, mineral oil, phthalates (DEA, MEA, and TEA), PABA, parabens and toluene.

Please note, many ingredients may be listed as a different name or not at all.

BOOMER BOYFRIENDS

February is the designated romance month. Of course, being an incurable romantic, I believe that romance should be practiced every month. Honestly, some of the best practitioners of romance are boomer boyfriends. These old school guys know that giving a bouquet of roses is better than “awarding” multiple roses to multiple girls.

These are the guys who gave The Lettermen albums in college with “When I Fall in Love” on it.

Just thinking about that beautiful song brings back the excitement of new love and fighting for time on the one and only hall phone to talk to that new love! How special that precious phone call was. Somehow today’s readily accessible texting just doesn’t seem as romantic.

The Supremes advised us that “You can’t hurry love, You just have to wait. Love don’t come easy. It’s a game of give and take.” Such wise relationship advice. Is it any wonder that many of us are still with those first serious boyfriends? The lyrics to the love songs of the Boomer Generation had some powerful messages mixed in with all the do-wops.

The idea of going steady, being in an exclusive relationship, getting pinned or staying committed to one person was valued. The concept of “friends with benefits” was not yet in the mainstream culture. Songs like “You’re My Soul and My Inspiration” (the Righteous Brothers), “I’ll Never Find Another You” (the Seekers), and “My Girl” (Temptations) encouraged committed relationships. Boomer guys understand the concept of dating one lady at a time, even today.

Okay, I know that some of those Boomer boyfriends whom I am praising also left their girls for younger wives. Many who did realize too late that they no longer have a contemporary who appreciates their style, their references, or their habits.

Living with a Sex in the City kind of gal can be intimidating, even for the most confident male. Nothing is left to the imagination in much of today’s reality entertainment. There is not much time for the romantic gesture when the outlandish one gets the public’s attention.

Boomer guys know how to slow dance. I think that may be a lost art now. And it is so romantic.

Let’s face it, girls, we still love the romance of our dating days.

So we must encourage those Boomer boyfriends (now husbands) of ours to continue the practices and habits of our generation (no matter what your kids say). One thing is for certain, as the Spiral Staircase sang to us years ago, “I love you more today than yesterday, But not as much as tomorrow.”

A City’s Canvas: Hayden Tedder

Being an artist is a job of the heart. It is a creative endeavor that encompasses who you are. It is what shapes your life and viewpoints along the road to becoming the person that you were meant to be. Some find this realization on their own, through life choices of trial and error. Others are lucky enough to have people in their lives that “show them the way.” These are people that see the gifts inside the artists that they can’t themselves see yet, or they can lead by example, and let the artists see through their walk of life what they want for themselves. For Hayden Tedder, this guidance came at an early age from the most likely of sources, her parents.

Hayden Tedder is a young artist new to the downtown Winston-Salem arts scene, but certainly an artist whose work is speaking for itself. Having already produced quite a collection of work, Tedder is making her way in what is already quite a diverse area of talented artists.

This is quite a testament to her parents’ success at bringing the art out of the artist.

“I’ve grown up in Winston-Salem. My parents are both artists and have been supportive of me pursuing what I love,” says Tedder.

“I am mostly self-taught but have worked with other artists doing work such as painting, curating, body painting, and scenic work. I found art to be therapeutic during a rough time in my life. It was the only place I could find peace and happiness. To me, it’s important that what I’m doing with my life is benefiting me mentally. I

decided this in 2011 after studying under artist Stephen Hopkins,” she continues.

Finding herself as an artist, as can be expected, has been a work in progress. However, it is definitely a road that she is feeling more and more comfortable in. “I like to keep my style fairly simple. I get my style from the influence of different artists that I view in Winston. An example of that would be the crisp, illustrative work of Kendall Doub and the artistic freedom of Chad Beroth. I have also incorporated what I’ve learned working for Jennifer O’Kelly at Muse Scenic Studio into how I go about the actual painting,” adds Tedder.

“I am most proud of my painting, ‘Sculpt.’ I feel as though that painting was the actual moment I became confident in myself as an artist. My most proud accomplishment is anytime I’m able to bring people together with my paintings, smiling and having a good time. As cheesy as that sounds,” she concludes.

Although still young and developing her talents as a painter, Hayden Tedder seems to have found the confidence and drive it takes to succeed as an artist. Thanks to her talent, drive and an inner confidence that keeps Tedder producing interesting and unique works, Tedder seems poised to be a force in the downtown artist scene for years to come. Of course, there are at least two people who are not surprised at that statement at all, but isn’t that what great parents do?

CONSIDER COOKING THIS VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is all about making a normal day seem…well, abnormal—special in a way that other days are not. So try something different this year with your significant other and stay in for a homemade meal together.

The very nature of Valentine’s Day is taking the opportunity to go out of your way to show affection, often in ways that are not realistic throughout the rest of the year. And because the responsibility for showing this affection should sit not in the lap of just one person in your relationship, but rather both of you pitching in equally, what better way to celebrate than by branching out for an extravagant meal made side-by-side?

Below, I’ve broken down three very different ways you can create an enjoyable, yet edible, meal and having fun doing it this Valentine’s Day.

FOR THE LOVERS ON A BUDGET: PIZZA & BEER

My wife and I have made this option somewhat of a tradition in Valentine’s Days past. We shop for, prep and enjoy unique pizzas each year that almost always turn out delicious.

Making a homemade pizza, all the way from the dough (store bought or handmade) to the toppings, can be relaxing and simple yet just different enough to make Valentine’s Day something special.

We’ve tried heart-shaped pizzas and traditional circle pies, thin crust and thick, pepperoni and cheese or even sausage and fried egg. Pizzas offer unlimited possibility and are very near impossible to mess up.

There’s also something very satisfying about watching raw dough and a bag full of toppings come together and become your own homemade masterpiece.

And with an hour or so between your meal prep and baking time, you’ll be able to toast the night without slaving over the stove.

A CLASSIER AFFAIR: THICK CUT STEAK & MOLTEN CHOCOLATE CAKE

This one takes some forethought, as you’ll need to properly season and marinate your steak the morning of Valentine’s Day. Let it sit in the fridge soaking up your favorite spices until you get home and are ready to cook.

Before you start on the steak, though, pull together everything you need for your chocolate cake. We often prefer the handsoff approach of the crock pot molten chocolate cake. Cake mix, eggs, the filling of your choice—just set it and forget it.

With your steak ready to go, you’ll need to get out your cast-iron skillet. For the best-charred edges, heat your skillet on high and let your marinated steak crisp evenly on each side. Slide it into the oven for a few minutes to cook it through the center, and you’ll have some of the most delicious beef around—cooked to order, without the wait.

And as soon as you’re done, dessert is awaiting. Skip the extra dishes and grab two spoons. There’s no shame in eating straight out of the crock pot. It’s Valentine’s Day after all.

A LIGHTER OPTION FOR THE SEAFOOD LOVER: SEARED SALMON FILET & POTATOES (& WINE!)

Another easy, albeit pricier, option is picking up a fresh piece of fish for you and your date.

Despite being four hours from the coast, we have pretty regular access to quality seafood in the Triad so don’t fret over availability.

Like the steak, I would recommend letting your fish marinate in spices or even a glaze while you’re gone during the day. Again, in the skillet, sear both sides evenly and use the oven if you must. We generally eat fish on the rawer side but your potatoes will be baking away anyway, so pop it in alongside to cook to your liking.

And don’t forget to split a bottle of wine throughout. Consider it insurance for an experimental meal.
