The View From This Side AUGUST 2019 July – another crazy month. I don’t know why I expect them to be boring. They never are, but I’m grateful for another BIG month! We had a lot going on…

First, I have to share some GREAT news! I got a clean bone scan report, and that is a HUGE relief to my family and me. I thank you all for your continued prayers for my health and the health of my husband, Tim! Our other big news – we have a new grandbaby! Well, a four-legged one! Brooke has wanted a new dog for a while, and she finally adopted a Bernedoodle that she’s named Carter. He’s a cross between a poodle and a Bernese Mountain dog making him a hypoallergenic breed. This is great for my son Tanner who loves dogs but is highly allergic.

Not only did Carter join our family, my mom, and stepdad, Charlie, adopted Carter’s sister, Missy. So double the fun at our house!

July’s GNO was extra special for me as I turned 60 years old that day. We celebrated at Providence Restaurant, and I donated my birthday to the Second Harvest Food Bank! All total, we raised nearly $1400, which equates to more than 9,800 meals for local families in need. Thank you so much to everyone for your generous donations and support!

The Life of a Working Mom Being a working mom is hard, partly because there are so many things you need to balance. It is important to feel present when you’re working and when you are at home, but often you have aspects of the other part of your life keeping you from being 100% focused on what you are doing. It can be really difficult to be your best work self if you know your child needs something, and it is just as difficult to feel like you are being the best mom possible when you know you are putting off important things for work to spend time with your child. The good news is that these feelings are completely normal, and you are not alone.

These days, there are a lot of working moms in the workforce. It has become very commonplace for women to enjoy a professional life and family life. And why not?

Both things are very fulfilling and can give you a sense of accomplishment. However, it can also be really hard to set the boundaries necessary to keep you from overextending yourself. Everyone wants to think they can do it all. And sometimes you can, but other times you will have to choose

between work and family. It can be really helpful to determine your boundaries and put plans in place to make the best of every situation that arises. Here are a few tips.

SET YOUR WORKING HOURS & STICK TO THEM

This can be really easy for some people and really hard for others. If you have a job where you have set hours and you don’t bring work home, then this isn’t a problem. But if you have a job where you work from home or are expected to check email after hours, the lines can get blurred. Establishing your working hours will help you be focused on what you are doing and not feel guilty.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO TURN OFF YOUR PHONE

If you are doing something with your family that is important, turn off your phone. Not only will it keep you from being disturbed, it will show your family that this time is important to you and that they matter.

DEFINE YOUR VILLAGE AND LEAN ON IT

Everyone needs a village. It might be your extended family or a group of close friends. Whatever the case may be, use it. If you can’t leave work to get a sick child or you are going to be late for pick up, know who can help you out and don’t be afraid to ask.

TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN WHEN IT DOESN’T WORK OUT

It’s not always going to go your way. Sometimes you will miss something that you

want to be there for because of a work obligation. As long as it doesn’t happen every time, your child will understand. You just need to talk to them about it.

Explain to them why you can be there and offer to make it up to them with another activity or special time together. Being honest with them will go a long way toward helping them undersand.

GIVE YOURSELF SOME GRACE

This might be the hardest and most important part of all of this. You can not beat yourself up every time you have to choose between work and family. You must give yourself grace to know that as each situation arises, you will make the best possible choice in that moment and move on. Sometimes it won’t be the right choice and sometimes you will hurt someone’s feelings. Learn from that and just keep going.

The bottom line is that you can find some balance between these two worlds. You need to remember to do what is best for you and your family and not look back. You need to have a fulfilling life and if that means you want to work, that is what you should do.

Be proud that you can love yourself enough to decide what makes you the best version of yourself.

He decides a little later to transfer some of the funds to savings, so he logs back in and makes the transfer.

2. Liza and Charles C. are Joe’s parents. Liza and Charles will be empty nesters soon, with Joe going off to college. They’ve always been a little wary of using bank “technology” because they prefer personal interaction. All the electronic capabilities were intimidating and they didn’t want to replace humans with a machine or app. Typical scenario: Charles has recently set up a small business and doesn’t have time to go in the branch as frequently, so when they did visit they discussed their concerns about technology. Their banker listened, noted what was most important to them, and walked the couple through the best technology options. Liza and Charles also want to help Joe financially a little each month, so they set up online banking and automatic transfers to Joe’s checking account. They both benefited from the PF Financial Wellness Center, where they completed Retirement 101 and Estate Planning, while Charles opened a business checking account where he also uses mobile deposit.

Both “customers” benefited from in-person and technology options, confirming that one doesn’t come at the expense of another!

Piedmont Federal will continue to implement customer-centric technology this year, including Notifi, which will enable customers to choose when and how they receive account alerts. In addition, they will add Zelle, a faster person-to-person money transfer system.

UNITED WAY OF FORSYTH COUNTY PROGRESS TO ZERO – TEN YEAR PLAN TO END CHRONIC HOMELESSNESS

BY ADELE CASANOVA This support strategy of helping the homeless while in emergency shelter, but not extending support beyond the emergency shelter status, resulted in many returning on a recurring basis, creating chronic homelessness.

Since 2006, over five hundred supportive housing units have been built in the county for the purpose of transitioning chronic homeless residents into successful independent members of the community. The transition to these units is coupled with social services and case management oversight, so independent living skills can be acquired. The United Way of Forsyth County has worked with many local partner agencies in providing these transitional services, including the Housing Authority, the Veterans Administration, Samaritan Ministries, and Crisis Control, among others.

In 2010 the United Way began The Forsyth Rapid Rehousing Collaborative, a program to transition people experiencing homelessness from shelters into mainstream housing units with short term rental assistance combined with social services support. This program has achieved a 90% rate of continued housing for individuals for up to 2 years. An additional change to the homeless system has been coordinated assessment, so no matter which door people enter homeless services from, they are given a common assessment to prioritize individuals chosen for the various supportive housing programs. The assessment looks primarily at health risk and vulnerability. The goal of this common assessment is to move those hardest to serve into successful housing, thus reducing their chronic homelessness.

The main challenges for the chronically homeless are mental disability, low income that does not allow for housing costs, lack of stable income due to housing instability, and lack of health care.

“Loss of, or lack of, permanent housing should not create a personal identity of being homeless,” states Andrea Kurtz.

“People are so much more than their disability or their housing crisis. Homelessness does not truly define them as individual people.” By applying what the United Way calls a Housing First Approach, providing affordable housing coupled with social services support, they are greatly reducing chronic homelessness.

Health care and affordable housing have been the greatest challenges to the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County when they adopted the 10 Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness in 2006. The United Way of Forsyth County has been leading the charge and have seen a significant reduction from 200 shelter beds occupied by chronic homeless residents to only 15 today. How has this achievement been made possible?

Knowing the history of homelessness in our area and the progression of how services were offered to this population is essential in understanding this achievement. In the mid to early 1980s, mental health facilities in the state began closing and many of the occupants were released without direction of care. Local shelters were built to house this population in our community on an emergency basis, and most housing shelters were built by faith-based organizations. Social services were offered to these individuals while they were housed in the shelters, but ceased when they left to join the mainstream population. “Skills learned and needed to navigate the homeless shelter environment are different from the skills and knowledge needed to live productively in independent housing,” states Andrea Kurtz, United Way Senior Director, Housing Strategies & Director, Housing Matters.

By changing how the support systems serve the homeless, implementing the Housing First Approach has resulted in some very good news for our community. While the shelter population remains stable at about 500 folks per night, their average length of stay in homelessness has been reduced from over 100 days when first measured, to under 45 days. Another significant change since beginning work on the Ten Year Plan has been a decrease in veteran homelessness. Where veterans once represented 15% of the homeless population, they are now down to 8%. Since the inception of the Ten Year Plan, 545 permanent supportive housing units have become available, reaching a 91% goal for the project.

This is indeed good news for all of us. When chronically homeless people become settled in permanent housing, with independent living skills, we all benefit, both socially and financially. BACK TO SCHOOL

Well parents – it’s that time of year again. Back to school! About midsummer parents were wishing this day would hurry, as it is a full-time job keeping the refrigerator filled and your sanity stable. Whether your child is entering kindergarten or high school, this is a hectic time for purchasing school supplies, clothes, and setting up schedules. With all the hustle and bustle, sometimes we overlook one of the most important items for the children: obtaining an eye examination. Parents want to arm their children with all the tools possible to assist with their learning throughout the year. One of the most important tools is good vision. Children are still growing, and with vision constantly changing, regular eye exams are important to detect and correct eye problems early. Eye exams are especially important before any child enters preschool and kindergarten.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vision problems are the single most prevalent disabling condition among American children. By the time they reach school, a quarter of American children suffer from a vision problem. This means that almost 12.5 million school-age kids may be unable to see the blackboard. This most certainly causes a decrease in learning.

When taking your child to the eye doctor, share your family history. It is important to know if certain eye conditions or diseases run in the family.

The earlier the problems are identified, the sooner they can be addressed.

Parents should be alert to symptoms such as complaints of eyestrain, headaches or squinting when reading or seeing the board at school.

These are some examples of common eye problems: nearsightedness, not able to see well at a distance, crossed eye, known as strabismus, and lazy eye, known as amblyopia. Getting these treated in early childhood can avoid permanent damage or vision loss in the near future.

With the new school year also comes the extracurricular activities such as sports. Being able to see well not only helps in learning, but also helps children to excel in sports. Eye injuries can also be a concern. Certain sports can cause serious damage such as getting hit in the face with an elbow during basketball. In fact, basketball is one of the most high-risk sports for eye injuries. Children should always wear the appropriate protective eyewear for any sport. What would you do with a chunk of cash and an idea?

Would you use the cash and make the idea happen, or would you be responsible and pay off college debt or something else equally as adult?

I’ve never been a fan of fully adulting. I made the idea happen.

The idea was Fearless Winston-Salem.

Fearless started with the idea is that there is no right or wrong way to woman. If you want to learn more about putting your makeup on or decorating a cake, you can – and if you want to learn about the local government or self-defense – you can! You can even learn both on completely different nights, in the same space. Because that’s the key to true feminism: it leaves space for people to have different opinions, views, and beliefs.

You also can get out of the coffee shop and take a meeting in a beautiful space that’s full of plants, light and color (and snacks!) Or work away from your “work” couch (guilty) if you need to get something done, or meet someone outside of the office, or just read a book in peace – or borrow one from our lending library that is, indeed, color coded.

When I started the space, I had no idea of the need. The group has grown astronomically: we have programming 5-6 days a week, have open hours for coworking – or meeting, hanging out, reading, coffee or just space to breathe – and it’s become so much more than the skill share and coworking space I thought it would be. It’s a community of women that will rally so hard around one another, stand up for each other, love, fight, argue and celebrate. It’s a community that wouldn’t exist without all of the women who offer their time to teach, all of the business owners that give discounts to members, and the paid members who sustain the space. It’s a new thing every day, for better or worse. But that’s the fun of following an idea though,

isn’t it? You have no idea what’s going to happen.

And that’s the awesome part: I still don’t know what’s going to happen next.

One day after hitting our one year, we released the very first open access women-owned business directory in the country – every other directory is pay to play – that is, as a business you have to pay to be listed (whether it is dues or a one-time fee) or if you’re a user you have to pay to access. Not this directory: it is all user submitted and completely free to use or be part of. Our future, as I see it, is littered with member-driven projects that better our corner of the world here in Forsyth County, all for women and by women.

I can’t say that I’ve always been as true to mission as I have been writing this: I’ve made assumptions about people based on my beliefs and made judgments on theirs. That’s the other beautiful part that’s blossomed in Fearless: a space for people to make mistakes, try new things, fail in plain sight, and still pick yourself back up for the “What next?”

Fearless isn’t for everyone: I know we aren’t pizza, and will never, ever please everyone. I do know it’s for anyone, and anyone can come in and join the Facebook group, come to headquarters (just look for the blue door with the white lightning bolt) or visit our programming calendar and give one of the classes a try. People ask all the time, why a lightning bolt? It’s power – together, we’re creating it.

Before we opened, I wrote a mission statement. Now, over a year later, it’s truer than ever: We believe that each woman is an individual supernova of power with the ability to change the community around her.

We believe that anyone is welcome, and everyone has something amazing to contribute.

We believe in the power of collaboration - that, as women, we are stronger together.

We believe in breaking the rules, breaking the ceilings, and breaking ground.

We believe that women are unstoppable when we’re lifting each other up.

We believe that together we ARE Fearless.

LOVE MAKES ROOM

I cannot recall a time when incivility has ruled more supremely than today. Culture has indoctrinated us to deem those who oppose our views as sheer evil. As we willingly contribute to this nonsense, we play right into the hand of media and political machines which ignite rhetoric solely to divide and conquer us. It’s disturbing, to say the least, but it’s nothing new.

In Scripture, Luke 9 records a time when Jesus traveled to Samaria, a people his people loathed.

Animosity between Jews and Samaritans ran deep and wide.

These two races had severed all ties, so much so that Jews traveling to and from Jerusalem took the long way around to avoid the region entirely. (When you’d rather walk an extra day than trek through a certain area engaging certain folks, the disgust runs thick!)

As usual, Jesus didn’t buy into culture’s agenda. He loved all people and pushed right through the walls that misunderstanding built.

Jesus sent His disciples into “enemy” territory to set up camp.

But when the Samaritans realized Jews were in town, they gave these perceived villains the boot before Jesus even arrived.

The disciples were ticked! They couldn’t believe the nerve of these morons. Two of the head honchos, James and John, raced back to Jesus with the news. They wanted to call down fire and destroy these hateful people! (They had it coming, right?)

Jesus’ response teaches me so much.

He didn’t even address the Samaritans’ wrongdoing. Instead, Jesus spoke directly to the toxicity flourishing in the hearts of His disciples. He tried to help them see that their reaction had less to do with the poison in the Samaritans’ souls and more to do with the poison living in their own souls.

Jesus said, “I did not come to destroy life, but to bring life.” (Luke 9:55) In other words, “No matter how viciously other people act, I will not react. I choose to respond in a way that reflects My Good Father who loves me and lives in me now.”

Then Jesus nails them even further.

Even though the Samaritans vehemently rejected Him, in the very next chapter, Jesus tells of a “Good Samaritan” who lovingly cared for a stranger in need when no one else would. (Wait a minute!

The Samaritans just dissed Jesus!

Yet He’s portraying them as “good folk”?! That’s going entirely too far!)

Do you see how radical Jesus’ response is? Instead of reciprocating the Samaritans’ animosity, He portrays them as kind and caring. (That would take a whole lot of Jesus in my soul!

I’m just saying!)

Jesus Lovers, we’ve got a decision to make in this chaotic culture of incivility. Will we allow today’s toxic talking points to taint our souls? Will we echo the cultural conversation? Or will we take the high road?

Friend, the animosity fueled by our culture easily seeps into our hearts and finds a home. We’ve got to stop taking the bait. Just because someone perceives things differently than we do, it doesn’t make them evil. Just because we perceive things differently than others doesn’t make us evil. You and I don’t have to agree. But we can still make room for one another.

I’ve never been more determined to love with arms wide open while drenched in God’s Unchanging, Unfailing Truth. It may offend some, but their hatred won’t deter me.

Can we simply choose to live a love that baffles, while remaining true to the One whose Word is true for all time and all people in all situations?

Can we? Let His Love and His Truth be our response every. single. time.

His Love in us . . . it makes room!

How to Select Window Treatments When we start a project with our clients, we don’t know where it is going to take us, or them. A more recent client brought us into their home to view their family space. They were ready for new curtains, a new rug, and some really updated furnishings. Furnishings can also include new end tables and new lamps, along with art to complete a room. At this point, we measure the room and windows for curtains and take photos so that we can lay it all out and work from our notes.

We first create a scaled room drawing so we can select the correct size for the furnishings. Once we do that, the fun begins with mounds of fabrics and creative ideas of how to use the fabrics. There are the cleanable, sustainable fabrics for sofas and our signature style of beautiful pillows.

Those little guys can bring out additional colors and can be changed seasonally. In planning, we select the sofa from the manufacturer that will accommodate the size we need, as well as the tilt recliner, ottoman or coffee table, end tables, and lamps. We finish the scaled plan of furnishings and begin the quest for window treatment fabrics. We conceptualize the design. Linen prints, solid linens, and accent tape trims are very popular.

Excitement for the designing women of June DeLugas Interiors is when we get new fabric samples. Our library is enormous. If we don’t have it, we can order it. We are constantly combing libraries from our vendors to find the latest and the greatest. We love the excitement created around prints, yet sometimes the room calls out for a more transitional solid linen with a bold trim. We love all of it because we are here to tell you that it absolutely completes a room, cuts down on noise, and warms and cozies any space.

We love the uncomplicated, simple panels. We simply love fabrics! It is the candy that feeds a designer’s soul.

If you will look at this home on the left page, the same dining room treatments are still in place fifteen years later (hint hint, June’s dining room). Blue and white Schumacher fabric, which is timeless, was used. The blue and white are so transitional that even our modern homes love the bold multiple colors of blue or the softer hues of blue. You can’t go wrong for a timeless look. In June’s guest room, there are simple linen panels with a bold blue geometric trim. All of these are timeless and will last for many years. The classic design will keep you well in the realm of classic and timeless.

Sometimes the reasons are different why clients call us for window treatments.

They may have sun issues or privacy issues. We analyze their needs and sometimes we recommend a product we sell from Hunter Douglas that is remote controlled. If you need to pull something up and down every night and morning, we can find a solution. Remote is the answer in many cases, especially if you prefer to see the outside without interference. Although we love shutters, twoinch blinds are more economical.

We promise you that we will not suggest Scarlet O’Hara’s window treatments, which are “Gone with the Wind.” Simple and elegant is more of a statement these days.

Other dining offerings at Salem Glen Country Club include The Bear’s Club, a member’s only room that is very popular on Friday nights and Jack’s Bar and Grill, a great place to grab a bite to eat, which is open every day, basically whenever people are golfing. The Grille at The Glen and Jack’s Bar and Grill are open to anyone, whether you are a member of the country club or not. “Food and drinks are also available at our pool, which is a Junior Olympic size pool. We have a smaller menu that we offer at the pool, along with a fun bar that serves drinks. With memberships for couples and families, our pool is very popular from Memorial Day through Labor Day,” Darren stated. Beyond the great eating options at Salem Glen, the country club and golf course have a few other unique offerings.

Many of us have certain dreams that don’t become reality. For Darren Mangus, owner of Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, NC, about 20 years ago he and his dad discussed their dream of owning a country club together one day, but the time was never just right. In 2015, during a visit to a friend who lives in Salem Glen, Darren found out that the country club was for sale and at that point in his life, the time WAS right – so he bought it. In three short years, Salem Glen has become not only a destination for golf enthusiasts, but for those who love great food, good times and ‘just plain having fun.’ As Darren likes to say, it is a place to call home.

Twenty-six years ago, Salem Glen development and country club opened with the only Nicklaus designed course in the area. The golf course had everything it needed to bring in golfers, but was found lacking in the area of the country club – the restaurants within the clubhouse were just missing “something.” Fast forward to 2015 when Darren Mangus purchased the country club, and quickly put into place the vision that he had.

“I really didn’t want Salem Glen to have the feel that many country clubs have: cliquish, stuffy, and expectations that can keep you from the main reason why you come to a country club. I wanted to create an environment where people want to come and just have fun! When you look at Salem Glen, whether you are coming to play golf, have a meal, or maybe sit by the pool, you want to escape from everyday stressors, and we want to make sure you have everything you need to have a great time. It may sound simple, but I really want our guests to eat, drink, and be merry. We say that we are ‘the club in the country,’ and that truly is how we look at Salem Glen. After four years, we have a great team in place in every area of the country club,” said Darren. Beyond the golf course, Salem Glen offers several choices for members and guests to dine.

Every country club needs a good restaurant, so Darren set out to bring the best to Salem Glen. “The Grille at The Glen originally began as an extension of the restaurant Five Points in Winston-Salem, NC. With our many events, from weddings to birthdays and everything in between, Catered Affairs led by Jack and Pam Welker catered most all of our events. When Five Points closed, Jack and Pam, who also managed Five Points, joined Salem Glen as our Food and Beverage partner. We have a wonderful chef, Jared Lee, also formerly of Five Points. Jared has a vision for giving our customers the best and freshest dishes, focused on also appealing to everyone’s taste. Our menu features a wide variety

My dad was a veteran and I have the flag that draped his casket in my office, and of course I have my mom’s meatloaf recipe on our menu, and my two boys, Ryan, 14, Tyler, 13 and my wife Kris, are my support in all I accomplish. I am so very grateful how the Salem Glen community has embraced us, not only with our role as owners, but as neighbors since we live here. and the addition of the dry bar location was something that evolved over time, and from a need I had found at our main location. At Alkali, we specialize in extensive coloring techniques and precision cutting, but I felt the need to build a farm system, adding a dry bar to the business.

Now I am able to hire new talent and train them to later move up within the full-service salon. At most salons, if you call last minute -- or simply walk in -- you are automatically presented to the newest, “greenest” stylist, and I feel this leads to new customers having a less than perfect experience!

At Alkali, I don’t want any of my stylists to feel like the newest or greenest! More thorough training -especially extensive customer service experience -- should be a requirement before each hairdresser takes the floor. A dry bar is something that downtown Winston-Salem absolutely needs and can certainly support, but it also fits a need for me, to hire and groom the very best hairdressers.”

FW: Tell our readers a bit about your services!

Amber: “We have a main

menu of five ‘go-to’ looks at the dry bar, and most include some sort of additional heat treatment at no extra charge. A typical service includes a shampoo, blow-dry, and styling. This can be customized to meet the client’s desires, and in addition to blowouts, we offer basic haircuts, makeup service, keratin treatments, and conditioning treatments. We also offer fun opportunities for private events.

You can book an entire day or a half day before your wedding for your own private party, including champagne -- and yes, we create lots of up-dos! We also offer on-site wedding day services as well. For weddings, we do offer special packages, with pricing available upon request.”

FW: How large is the dry bar staff, and can clients drop in throughout the day?

Amber:

“There are three employees at Air, and definitely dropin appointments are available.

Since the dry bar services require a shorter time frame, if you do drop in and are asked to wait, it’s usually only a few minutes. We are also able to pull stylists from Alkali for large special events.”

FW: As you’ve launched

the dry bar and watched it grow, what has been its biggest challenge, or clients’ misconception?

Amber: “The biggest

misconception is that a blowout is only for special events! Getting blowouts as part of your regular beauty routine can definitely save you a lot of time and energy.

For busy moms, especially, it may be the only time you truly relax and feel pampered.

Right before I knew where I was scheduled to go for Rosey’s Review this month, I had made lunch plans with two colleagues to go to Hakkachow.

Then, I found out I was reviewing HakkaChow for the August issue. And then, I learned I was reviewing them the same day I had already scheduled to go to lunch there. So, I did what any self-respecting restaurant reviewer would do… I went to HakkaChow twice on the same day. Because, why not?

If you’ve visited the restaurant before, you know why I didn’t rearrange my lunch plans. A great location. A beautiful restaurant. A fabulous menu. Great service. So, there was really little worry on my end about going twice because the menu is so diverse! I had vegetarian sushi for lunch, which was light and refreshing… And HakkaChow co-owner Jonathan Chung chose my dinner. So either way – it was a dining win!

Our photographer, Melinda Lamm, and I were joined by some friends of mine who had eaten at HakkaChow a few times and who were sushi enthusiasts! And it’s always fun to bring guests with us who are excited to be a part of the Rosey’s experience.

Jonathan visited our table to explain what he had planned for us. And we knew right away that we were in for a treat! First up – Beef Dumplings! The beef dumplings have been on the menu for a while, but they recently switched up the recipe a bit. The dumplings are fried, but they aren’t heavy or greasy. They were stuffed full of perfectly cooked beef and served with a soy-ginger sauce, which was amazing. They also offered a second sauce – Korean Hot Sauce.

WOWZA! Yes, it’s hot, but full of flavor, too! Just make sure your water glass is full!

Also, off the appetizer menu, we sampled the Thai Basil Beef Wrap. Honestly – this could be an entrée. A plate of beef that has been mixed with carrots, celery, scallions, lemongrass, and cilantro is served over crispy rice noodles and a side of peanut-sesame sauce. A second plate of fresh lettuce allows you to roll your own wraps with as much or as little filling as you want (though why would you want only a little?).

There’s a great contrast of the hot filling with the cold lettuce, and every bite is bursting with flavor.

We took a break from the appetizers to sample a variety of the signature mojitos that HakkaChow offers. Those included the Lemongrass Ginger Mint, the Yuzu Tangerine, a Watermelon Cucumber, and Dragonberry Blueberry mojitos.

All of them were so flavorful and refreshing! I admit, I bogarted the Lemongrass Ginger Mint Mojito for myself. I loved the incredible flavor combination that would be the perfect remedy for any hot summer day!

The Yuzu Tangerine was bursting with citrus.

I had never heard of yuzu before but learned that it’s a citrus fruit used in Korean and Japanese cuisine. It was fruity and delicious!

The Watermelon Cucumber mojito just tastes like summer. It’s that simple. It’s a perfect cool-down drink after a long, hot day! And the Dragonberry Blueberry had a yummy, bold flavor. It had a bit of a tanginess to it, but it wasn’t bitter.

All of the mojitos were beautifully presented and appealed not only to the taste buds but to the eyes, too!

We moved on to a Japanese Seaweed Salad that was pleasant, light, and a great summer meal.

There’s so much color in this bowl! From the greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and seaweed! Plus, there’s crab salad, spicy tuna, sesame seeds, and scallions. The whole thing is tossed with a wasabi vinaigrette. It’s a symphony of flavor in every bite!

There’s a great mix of textures that a seafood lover will definitely enjoy!

We moved on to the sushi round… As mentioned earlier, I had had vegetarian sushi for lunch, so while it wasn’t technically a part of Rosey’s Review – I feel like I should give a shout out to it. I love vegetable sushi, and the Garden Rolls are so clean tasting!

I love the combination of the rice with the crunchy vegetables! And Avocado Rolls? Quite possibly the best thing ever.

For our dinner sushi, Jonathan chose Crouching Tiger and Dancing Eel rolls. Don’t you just love sushi names? Whether you like sushi or not, you have to agree that sushi names are so creative and create such a visual picture!

Crouching Tiger is an inside-out sushi roll that is

filled with spicy tuna and cucumber. It’s topped with premium tuna, ebi (a specially prepared shrimp), and avocado. The roll is drizzled with spicy mayonnaise, Sriracha, crispy shallots, and masago (crunchy salmon eggs). It’s a brightly colored, flavorful sushi roll that packs a lot of flavor in every bite.

Our second sushi roll was called Dancing Eel. Another flavorful sushi roll, the Dancing Eel is made of tuna, lobster salad, cream cheese, crab sticks, and cucumber, and topped with a piece of baked eel, eel sauce, scallions, and sesame seeds. If you’ve never eaten eel, it’s got a firm, slightly sweet flavor that’s similar to squid. It doesn’t have a fishy aftertaste, which makes it a good option. Again, the sample of Dancing Eel was beautifully and artistically arranged and a delicious selection for the evening!

At the end of our meal, we were offered two desserts to try. And what can you say to that except, “Okay!” with a great deal of enthusiasm! We tried the Fried Banana first. All I can say here is that there’s fruit in it and, in my opinion, that makes it healthy. I doubt anyone in the health industry would agree with me, but a girl can dream, right? It’s a shareable dessert with the fried bananas circling a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, and the whole thing is drizzled with chocolate sauce. One of our guests was ready to lick the plate, and honestly, no one could blame him.

We also sampled the Crème Brûlée. The Crème Brûlée at HakkaChow is always changing, and the flavor is seasonal. This one was a new one to me – Chocolate Crème Brûlée. They did an excellent job with this, making sure that the chocolate didn’t overwhelm what makes Crème Brûlée so unique. It’s also topped with sweetened diced strawberries. It was the perfect way to end a great meal!

So if you have a chance to visit HakkaChow Asian Eats soon, do! And if you happen to go twice in the same day, they won’t judge you (and neither will I). They will welcome you a second time with their signature hospitality and enthusiasm! Be sure to tell them that Rosey sent ya!

A Dual Approach to Strengthen Forsyth Families

In order to make real and lasting systemic change in a community, social work has to employ a dual approach that addresses immediate needs, as well as programs that chip away at the basic causes of those immediate needs. This year, Family Services is working hard to address both sides.

“The first thing you have to do is meet your families in crisis where they are, and help them move through that crisis,” said Michelle Speas, Chief Development and Public Relations officer at Family Services. “But the second piece of that response is to take a step back and ask, ‘How did we get here? Why do we have so many families living in poverty?

What are those systems-related issues in our community that are preventing everyone from thriving?’”

Since 1905, Family Services of Forsyth County has worked with the community to help families resolve crises; protect victims of family violence—including domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault; abolish elder abuse; and prepare preschoolers to be ready to succeed in school. But as times have changed, so have the driving initiatives behind the organization.

“In the ’20s, we operated the first prenatal center in the county; we clearly don’t do that anymore. In the ’60s, Lyndon Johnson started Head Start, and Family Services was asked by the community to operate that program, and we’re still operating that today, since 1965,” Speas reflected. “In the ’80s, domestic violence movements started.

We were asked to organize and facilitate the work around a battered women’s shelter, and [because of that] Forsyth County had the first shelter in North Carolina.”

Today, Family Services is focused on two central initiatives: quality Pre-K and a Family Justice Center model.

Brain science has confirmed what most parents already know: namely, that the first five years of life are a time of tremendous physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. These years are especially critical for the construction of a child’s developing brain. Because of this, The Pre-K Priority works to address early education concerns for impoverished children through dialogue.

Together with more than 30 different organizations, Family Services is elevating the conversation on what quality pre-school looks like for all children—and hopes to change the narrative for children in the future.

“An advocacy campaign will begin this fall, thanks to the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust,” Speas announced. “It will be an opportunity for the public to get involved and get engaged.”

The second initiative, introducing a Forsyth County Family Justice Center, would create a collaborative relationship between domestic violence agencies and criminal justice professionals. Earlier this year, Forsyth County invited the Alliance for HOPE International, the founders of the Family Justice Center movement, to complete a twoday Study Tour of Forsyth County.

The Forsyth Family Justice Center will address domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and elder abuse, by providing co-located services and support for survivors.

The VISTA at Forsyth Plastic Surgery is new, exciting, and the first of its kind in the Triad.

“It’s been a long time in development, but we are so excited that within the next month, Winston-Salem and the Triad will have a state-of-the-art center dedicated to beauty and aesthetics,” says Gina Racca, lead aesthetician at The VISTA. “It’s going to be a beautiful building that reflects our goal: to bring cutting edge treatments to our patients in a safe and effective way.”

Gina has been at Forsyth Plastic Surgery for many years and will be heading up The VISTA and supervising the staff, all under the direction of the five board-certified plastic surgeons at Forsyth Plastic Surgery.

“Everything we do is in conjunction with the doctors in our practice, and they are all board-certified plastic surgeons with many years of experience,” notes Gina. “Their vision was a center where patients have access to the latest in aesthetic services in a beautiful setting.”

So what does a typical visit to The VISTA look like?

First, when you enter The VISTA you’ll meet Danielle, The VISTA’s cosmetic concierge.

Danielle will help you with every aspect of your experience at the center.

“Everyone who comes to us has unique desires and goals,” says Danielle. “We have so many options these days for our patients, and our job will be to personalize your experience so that you get the best and most effective treatment that is available.”

Kinsley Nix is an aesthetician at The VISTA and explains that the “menu” of services will be broad and will have something for everyone.

“Some of our patients may be interested in just getting on a great skin care regimen, while others may want to do something like CoolSculpting, which is the number one non-invasive fat reducing treatment in the world,” explains Kinsley. “And we are excited about some of the new technologies we are introducing to the area, such as CoolTone and Dermal Infusion.”

CoolTone has recently been FDA-cleared, and uses magnetic muscle stimulation to tone muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. It’s like getting a super workout in just a few minutes.

“CoolTone is an incredibly exciting technology, and we are thrilled to be one of the first in the Triad to offer it,” says Gina. “Now, we can not only reduce fat, but we can tone the muscles that help to define the shape of our bodies.”

Dermal Infusion is a new and advanced skin-resurfacing treatment that combines exfoliation, extraction, and infusion of condition-specific serums to improve skin health, function, and appearance. After the treatment, the skin is left feeling cleaner, smoother, and healthier.

“We can’t wait to show patients how good their skin will look and feel after just one session of Dermal Infusion therapy,” says Kinsley, who notes that when a deeper treatment is needed The VISTA has the most complete line of lasers in the Triad.

“Lasers can rejuvenate the skin by reducing wrinkles and lines, leading to a smoother appearance,” says Dr. John Fagg, one of the surgeons at Forsyth Plastic Surgery and one of the founders of The VISTA. “And we have other lasers, too, such as our PicoSure laser that can remove unwanted tattoos and our Elite laser that reduces unwanted hair. These machines are all located in The VISTA and used by both the aestheticians and the doctors.”

Another service offered at The VISTA is the cosmetic injection of Botox and fillers, such as Juvederm and Volbella. All of the injections will be performed by the doctors.

“Patients at The VISTA who come in for an injection will see one of the doctors, and we do the injections,” says Dr. Andy Schneider of Forsyth Plastic Surgery. “I think our patients like the fact that The VISTA is a place where they will see both expert aestheticians and experienced board-certified plastic surgeons. Another popular treatment is MiraDry, which permanently reduces underarm sweating in just one treatment.

“Both men and women love this treatment,” explains Dr. Gil Kingman. “For our patients who have excessive sweating, or just don’t want to wear antiperspirants, it is an amazing technology.”

Decorating Tips: 1. If your wallpaper has a busy pattern, choose artwork and frames that are simple.

UnMean Girls: Ending Girl on Girl Crime

Tina Fey’s 2004 Comedy “Mean Girls” is one of my favorites, and not just because I’m a super fan of Fey’s work. It’s a deep, yet funny, look on something that is still going strong 15 years later and will probably be going on 15 years past this article: Girl on Girl Crime.

make you look good, and yours make me look good) and claim her shine as your own, even when you still feel massively jealous of her. If you want to be her friend, naturally be her friend. Don’t seek out to befriend her in some weird law of attraction adventure.

Girl on Girl Crime is exactly what it sounds like: an aggression of any degree perpetrated by one female or a group of females against each other.

The more open we are with our own emotions, the more confident we are as we move through life. And the less you worry about other’s successes. If you’re jealous of someone, tell her. If you wish you could do something like that, be honest. And always remember: the pie of success isn’t finite. Bake more pie.

Some folks think the opposite of Girl on Girl Crime is for all women to be pro all women. I think that leads to a falsehood and a fake persona that might be worse than the alternative. The best part of modern-day feminism is the ability to not be friends with every single woman you meet: you see we’re all capable of thinking and believing what we want to believe, and don’t have to believe something just because someone else believes it.

We care out of intention and choice, not out of obligation. The beauty of true feminism leaves space for the different causes, opinions, and lifestyles.

How do we get around the “mean girl” persona and really end Girl on Girl Crime? Here are three ideas that might start changing how you look at your fellow woman:

JEALOUSY IS OK

I am exhausted with the toxic culture that’s being built within some circles of empowerment – live an abundant lifestyle! Law of attraction!

Don’t be jealous! Being jealous is less than ideal!

Repeat after me: jealousy is OK. You know why? Because all of your emotions are valid. It is OK to be jealous of another woman! There’s nothing wrong with that feeling if you feel it. It’s not ok to befriend that woman under the guise of the Shine Theory (the idea that if you shine, I shine, and my accomplishments

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE FRIENDS

You do not have to like every woman you meet. It is completely normal to dislike someone because of their beliefs, lifestyle, opinions, choices. You don’t have to befriend someone just because they are another woman.

It’s not ok to be disrespectful.

Even if the woman you dislike is living in a way that you would never – and this comes up politically a lot – you still have to be a respectful human. Don’t tap into petty by insulting her looks. You can be civil to another person without being friends with them.

BE YOU, DON’T BE THEM

Society nudges us in the direction of the mean girl: from issues with ideal body images that often lead to insults to the immediate attack on physical appearance when people disagree, it’s easy to tap into petty. You don’t have to do that though. You can listen to someone you disagree with or you can respectfully disagree.

Peace

What is peace? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, peace is defined in a variety of different ways. First, peace is considered to be “a freedom or a period of freedom from public disturbance or war.” Secondly, peace is “a quiet and calm state of mind.” And finally, peace “an agreement and harmony among people.” While this state of being can easily be defined, it is much harder to obtain.

The month of August is a time to reflect back on tough times and reevaluate what it means to have peace among us.

Originally founded on August 16, 1926, at the Democratic Peace Conference in Germany, August became International Peace Month as a time to reflect specifically on the First World War. On August 16, 1926, TIME Magazine wrote: “At Rheims, martyred memorial city of World War destruction, 4,000 pacifists from 30 countries assembled last week for the Fifth International Democratic Peace Conference. Nine hundred of the delegates were young Germans, representing almost every German city. At the first session, the present month of August 1926, was proclaimed “international peace month,” the delegates voting to encamp in tents upon the onetime World War battlefields of France through Aug. 29, “in order to pursue an intensive study of international peace work.”

Sadly, this month was created due to a variety of horrific miscalculations which lead to the destruction that was our first World War. WWI killed millions and withered Europe on a scale once considered unthinkable. The war not only set the tone for the next century to be one of conflict and violence, but also altered how humans began to think about their future. Following in the footsteps of this war, generations grew up in fear, with much lowered expectations for the future.

Today, as the memory of this war has greatly receded, it is still crucial that we educate our future generations of the horror that this war brought on, and learn from past mistakes. What are some simple methods to prepare one’s family for recognizing August as the International Peace Month? By educating ourselves through reading. Over the years, countless books have been written about the

“Great War.” By checking out these books from a local library, then either reading a book its in entirety to discuss later, or reading sections of a book together, one can easily educate their family this summer about this catastrophic war.

Below is a short list of excellent educational books regarding WWI, compiled from the “National Day Calendar” website: • All Quiet On the Western Front by E.M. Remarque is a novel about the effects of the war on the men fighting it.

• Paths of Glory by Humphrey Cobb is a novel about corruption and injustice in the military.

This piece of literature later became the basis for Stanley Kubrick’s classic film Paths of Glory.

• The Great War and Modern Memory by Paul Fussell is a study of how the war changed Western culture.

• The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman is a poignant story of how the war started.

• Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo is a graphic look at the horrors of war.

Countless organizations, most notably the Peace Corps, have been established in years past to provide peace among those who need it most— war ravaged countries where food is scarce, shelter is tough to find, and love is lacking. While these organizations are excellent in providing relief and help to others in other tough situations, it is still vital that all take the first step to understanding what peace is—educating ourselves. This August, consider doing so through reading up on the past wars and discussing the issues of peace around the world. Hopefully, through taking this first step— education—today, we can provide younger groups lessons about our previous mistakes, so that we may not repeat the mistakes that led to the Great War. As George Santayan once said, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Ways to Fit in Being FIT as a Working MOM

Working moms are so incredibly busy, they barely have time to think, let alone prioritize their own fitness. This can seem like an unrealistic goal to reach – being fit is for your early twenties before you have to deal with board meetings, PTA meetings, and nightly homework, right? That is where you are wrong! You may not have the time or energy to become as buff as Arnold Schwarzenegger, but that doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice your well-being just because you are raising a small human and have a full-time job. Here are some ways to fit in being fit between your work life and mom life.

WAKE UP EARLY

If you find you don’t have enough time during the day, try expanding your day. Set your alarm a little bit earlier than normal, and get your booty shaking. If you have a gym membership, head on over there; many gyms will even offer sunrise classes that are popular with people who like to sweat before heading into the office. If running is your style, hit the pavement in your neighborhood and enjoy seeing what your part of our wonderful city looks like

before most people are awake. Or, if you can’t leave the house because of kids, find a workout video online and sweat it up in the privacy of your living room. Not only will this get your workout done before you are too tired to have the motivation to do it, starting your day with adrenaline can give you an extra boost in your step for the rest of the day.

UTILIZE YOUR LUNCH BREAK

Some corporate offices have gyms on location as a perk to employees. If you have access to one of these, you should absolutely take advantage of it over your lunch break! Even a 30-minute cardio session three times a week can make a huge difference, not only in your physical health, but your mental health, as well. If your office doesn’t have this as a perk, you can always go for a run outside, or even book a conference room over lunch and do a Tabata workout or the like.

MICRO WORKOUT SESSIONS

Don’t have time for a 30-minute workout session every day?

Instead of doing daily traditional workout sessions, try breaking

them up on some days. Take ten minutes in the morning to do some burpees and crunches before you hop in the shower. On your morning break, go for a walk with some light weights, like a ‘90s suburban mom with a high ponytail and fanny pack. Over lunch, do jumping jacks before you eat. When you get home, run laps in the backyard for 10 minutes with your kids before you start your evening routine. It may not feel as effective as doing it all in one go, but something is more than nothing, and studies have shown that even small sections of activity can make a big difference in your health, when compared to those living a sedentary lifestyle.

GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED

This is the biggest way to ensure that you will maintain a healthy lifestyle when you work and have children. Thanks to the Internet, there are a ton of workout videos for free, available at the touch of a button. Younger children often enjoy Zumba videos and other videos that involve dance or lots of quick movements, while older children can often really enjoy more advanced videos with weights; just be careful and teach them about safety around working out. If it’s nice out, go for a run with them and the dog, or a bike ride around your neighborhood. Finish it off with a session of yoga; the children’s yoga can be surprisingly effective for adults, as well—and they showcase fun stories that all ages will love. Most importantly, if you get into a habit of being active with your children, they will absolutely hold you accountable.

NUTRITION LABELS FOR WOMEN According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health, studies show that when a woman eats healthy, everyone in her household is more likely to eat healthy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists shared that the body needs a balanced supply of nutrients to grow, replace worn-out tissue, and provide energy. They also reported that excess calories can lead to health problems and even obesity, which in turn raises your risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and more. One of the simplest ways to eat healthier is to make an effort to understand and read the nutrition facts label.

The National Institutes of Health suggested that women look for specific things on the food label, including: • Product dates, including “sell by,” “use by” and “best if used by.”

• Ingredient list, including each ingredient in the product. Consider that they are listed by quantity with the greatest quantity listed first.

• Nutrition facts label, which contains the total number of servings in the product and the food or drink serving size.

• Daily Value, which tells you how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to a total daily diet based on 2,000 calories a day.

While the label can be found on most items, there may not be a label on fresh fruits and vegetables or meats.

The important thing is that you have a balanced diet that includes protein, dairy, grains, fruits, and vegetables.

needs and require fewer calories than men. If you are very active, you may require more calories. Needs largely depend on age and stage in life, such as during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or after menopause. Always beware of labels that mention added sugar, sodium and saturated and trans fats.

Terms like fresh, no additives and natural can be misleading because while they sound good, they are often not regulated. Other words that are not always fool-proof include zero trans fat, multi-grain bread, no sugar added or sugar-free, light and fatfree. It is also a good idea to compare brands, as the same product can have varying labels. Try to eat regularly and do not skip breakfast as it is one of the most crucial meals of the day.

Be especially vigilant about the labels on products you give your kids.

Marketing targets kids with foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt and low in nutritional value. Cartoon characters and celebrities that your kids like may try to lure them in to buy certain products. Healthy habits start to form at a young age, so you want to do your part to ensure that you aim to prevent type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other chronic illnesses.

Consider the benefits of taking the time to read the label. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at behavioral data and found the average body mass index of women who use nutritional labeling on foods for guidance is on average 1.49 points lower than those who do not, which equates to about 9 pounds. Before making any lifestyle changes, consult with your physician and make sure it is safe. Making the commitment to continue learning about and understanding the nutrition facts label will keep you one step ahead of the game.

WHAT IS A SUPERFOOD?

There is no official or medical definition for the word, “superfood.” It’s just a marketing term for a food with exceptionally high nutritional value. Most superfoods are plants loaded with phytonutrients, the good-for-you natural compounds that help protect you from cancer and other health problems. Because health-conscious consumers are willing to pay more for healthful foods, there is a lot of “super-hype” surrounding superfoods.

So be aware of that, and be smart about what you buy and how much you pay for it.

WHICH SUPERFOOD IS BEST?

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no one “best” superfood. No single food, not even a superfood, can meet all of your nutritional needs. Your body benefits most when you tap into the synergism that occurs when a variety of plant foods work in combination with each other. The most healthful strategy is to eat many superfoods along with healthy options from across all of the food groups. What we eat is most likely to result in good health when we: • • • •

OFF-WHITE: ALMONDS

A quarter cup of almonds contains 161 calories and provides about 14% of your daily fiber.

These nutritious and tasty nuts also provide protein, vitamin E, calcium, and potassium.

RED: TOMATOES

Tomatoes are a luscious and versatile cooking ingredient. Not only that, they are high in vitamin C and lycopene, which has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Other healthy foods in the red category: watermelon, pink grapefruit, guava, cranberries, strawberries.

GREEN: SPINACH

Popeye knew what he was talking about!

Spinach is full of nutrition: vitamins K, C, A, B2, B6, and E, plus fiber, niacin, zinc, and antioxidants. And there are only 30 calories in a one-cup serving. Other healthy green or yellow/green foods: pistachios, avocados, kiwi fruit.

MULTIPLE COLORS: CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES

Radishes, arugula, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, bok choy, and turnips are all cruciferous vegetables. They are “cruciferous” (Latin for “cross-bearing”) because of their flowers, which have four petals that resemble a cross. What is old age these days? That is the million-dollar question we as a society are currently struggling to define. The modern Western culture, especially American culture, has long held a negative stigma of aging and death, resulting in many people fearing old age. Currently in our society, many people approaching their 50s and 60s strive to maintain youthfulness through healthy lifestyles, modern advances in health care, and cosmetic procedures. There are 77 million Baby Boomers currently in America, people who were born between 1946 and 1964. Approximately 10,000 of this group turn retirement age per day, and they hold twothirds of the disposable income in our economy, making them a powerful economic force.

But how are these aging members of our community viewed and treated? Society’s view of the aging is influential in how we define old age. Culturally, people in old age are often depicted as weak, bumbling, confused, or even comical. This contrasts immensely with the view of the aging populations in many other cultures. In many cultures around the world, older people are respected for their wisdom and celebrated for reaching old age, when not long ago in many parts of the world life expectancy was significantly lower than today.

In America, it is common for older people to be moved into retirement communities and nursing homes, whereas in other countries such as Korea, India, and China, such moves would be considered dishonorable and disrespectful. Multigenerational family units live together, often with the older members considered the family leaders.

With so many Baby Boomers aging in America, many of whom want to retain vitality and continue to be celebrated as part of our youth-obsessed culture, we need a new image and definition of aging. Often, cultural norms and beliefs are shaped by economic factors.

Advertising and marketing media target youth and youthfulness in order to move the economy forward. But with the ever-growing number of people reaching retirement age and holding the majority of spending power, we are starting to see a shift in marketing strategies aimed at an older generation.

It is common for people in America in their 50s, 60s, and even 70s to be fit, healthy, and active. Advances in modern medicine have extended life expectancy in America from 69 years of age in 1960 to 78 years in 2016. Attitude and lifestyle choices play an important role in the “youthfulness” of the aging population. Baby Boomers are actually more likely to start a new business than Millennials, and 45% of them consider themselves entrepreneurs. Staying active and independent, especially regarding health care choices, takes the burden off the children of aging parents. Our attitude as a society that the aging are equally valuable contributors to the community goes a long way in ensuring that older people get the same medical attention and care as the younger generations, helping them stay viable and happy longer.

So, if you, or your parents, are reaching what is typically thought of as “retirement” age, 60 to 65 years old, how do you view old age?

Is it an exciting time of renewal where new opportunities can be sought out? Is it a time to celebrate your hard-won wisdom and to share it with your family and community through service to others? Some say that as we age, people get wiser. We gain experience, overcome challenges, and learn more as we travel through the years. These lessons can bring new insights and ways to handle different seasons of life.

Sometimes people will also look back and think about what advice they would give to their younger selves, and that is exactly what a few of our writers and readers did.

TO MY YOUNGER SELF, I WOULD SAY:

“Don’t be in such a hurry. Time is going to fly, and there’s no reason to rush through it. Take your time and think through your choices. Also, what you think is important now is going to change. Your values and priorities will deepen. It’s not that you’re superficial, but the things you have wasted time worrying about won’t matter in 20 years.

Back to School for Adults

Whether you have kids or just went to Target and saw the rush on notebooks and binders, the feeling is in the air. Just like that the summer is almost gone, and you’re gearing up for back to school. Fall is the perfect time to dust the sand off your pants and start thinking about learning: yours.

Adults learn differently than kids – that should be no surprise, but do you know how you personally learn? As a general go-to, adults need to be involved in planning their instruction and evaluating their results. Kids learn because they are supposed to, and adults learn because they see the relevance of learning – whether that is a promotion you’re working towards or a hobby you want to polish, we have to choose to learn because we won’t get hit with a truancy report.

That’s the most important part: we have to choose to learn and tie it to that higher purpose, whatever it is. Before you run out to sign up for the first continuing education class at your local college, take a moment to think about what you want to learn, and why. Maybe it’s sign language because you’ve always wanted to, or how to care for houseplants better, or how to code a website.

After you’ve got in mind what you want to learn, it’s time to think about how. Here are three low-cost ways to tap into that back to school feeling:

ONLINE CLASSES

Take a quick moment to Google what you want to learn, and the phrase “online classes.”

Chances are there will be a plethora of videos you can learn from the comfort of your own couch and house. How do you know which class is best, and what if this is something really new for you? Repeat after me: try before you buy. There are so many creators on YouTube making great videos for learning, and the best part? If you don’t like one, you can easily click to another. Find someone that fits your learning style and see what you can get for free, first.

After you know it’s something you want to invest in, look into online class platforms. Sites like Lynda, Skillshare, and Teachable offer fairly low-cost options to learn skills from watercolor to public speaking to coding.

IRL [IN REAL LIFE] CLASSES AND PROGRAMS

Classes are becoming a big part of many businesses’ revenue streams. A few months ago, I took a plant class at my favorite plant shop, a kombucha class at a local brewery and a mushroom growing class where I buy my local produce. Usually these classes don’t require experience and are priced fairly well – and generally, you get something from the class, whether that is a discount or takeaway (like a mushroom cube!)

If you’re looking for a more specialized skill or hobby, be sure to check out the local colleges and even traditional K-12 schools.

Adult continuing education is usually offered in the evenings or on weekends, and in short increments (not 12-week classes) for the working – and busy – adult.

MEETUPS

Interpersonal learning means you learn well with other people. You’re probably pretty social, sensitive to motivations, feelings, and moods. So why not learn with a group of people that are interested in learning the same thing? Check out local meetups and groups, even book clubs on the subject. You’re essentially learning from other folks, and with them – maybe they have a great book recommendation or you’ll find that friend that will come with you to that mushroom class or cooking workshop.

Since this avenue is group driven, it only works when something exists. And if it doesn’t? Start one yourself! Post on your social media and get a group together at a public place. If one person shows up the first time, great: that’s one more person that you know and can learn with.

As mentioned earlier, adults need to opt into learning. If they don’t want to learn, they won’t – so it’s up to you to keep it up.

Daily Doses of Inspiration

Women in our community tend to wear many hats. They act as wives, mothers, professionals, caregivers, and even chauffeurs and chief cooks and cleaners. They strive to do it all and sometimes need a little inspiration. Inspiration is the motivation and encouragement that gets them through the day. It can come in the form of a special word, a soothing sound, a serene picture or a simple act of kindness. Practicing positive affirmations can make a big difference in how you feel.

Remember that positive statements always overpower negative thoughts and when you repeat something enough times, you will start to believe it. Whether it is a little chuckle or a belly laugh, you are triggering physical changes that

stimulate your heart and lungs and increase endorphins and decrease cortisol, which is the stress hormone.

Laughter can decrease your heart rate and blood pressure, as well as help with muscle relaxation. Down the road, laughter can boost your immune system, ease pain, help you deal with difficult situations, and improve mood and overall happiness. Some ideas to get an extra laugh or two in your day include: • Reading the comic section of the newspaper • Talking to a child, because they just say the funniest things • Trying laughing yoga where you laugh with special guided techniques that can oxygenate your body and brain • Watching a comedy such as a movie or television show • Checking out a local comedy club • Purchasing a joke book or downloading an app that has jokes every day on your phone • Spending time with funny people If all attempts to laugh fail, you may want to consider seeing your physician to rule out any underlying health conditions such as depression that are preventing you from feeling inspired and optimizing your potential.

VINEGAR DOES THAT?!

As a general cleaner, using white vinegar is hard to beat. It’s proven to be economical, is environmentally friendly (i.e., used in green cleaning), and is useful in so many ways for basic housekeeping chores. But can white vinegar be used for here and there, pop-up episodes that occur? Yes! This list is just a sampling of some of the other uses for white vinegar in repairing damage to furniture and saving elbow grease in sprucing up around the house.

CLEANING SCISSORS

11 WAYS WHITE

As any crafter or seamstress knows, scissors are a vital tool that need to be kept sharp and clean. If the blades or handle get sticky, they’re no use for projects. What to do?

Don’t buy a new pair – high quality scissors can be expensive. Just dip a soft cloth in full-strength white vinegar to remove the sticky residue and wipe dry with another soft cloth.

RINGS ON FURNITURE

Oops! Someone left a wet glass on your wood table without a coaster. Now you have a permanent reminder to deal with.

No problem! Mix equal parts of white vinegar and olive oil and wipe the wood surface, following the grain, with a soft damp cloth.

DUSTY MINI-BLINDS

HELPS AROUND THE HOUSE

Love those mini-blinds; hate the dust that accumulates. Mix equal parts of vinegar and hot water. Put on a pair of white cotton gloves and dip them into the solution. Run each slate between your fingers for some ‘white glove’ cleaning. Yes, this may take time, but your blinds will be free from those pesky little dust flutters that you see every time you open them.

SPRUCE UP A BRICK HEARTH

Do you pressure wash the exterior of your home annually? What about the brick that’s inside your home? That brick hearth is looking a bit dull; it could use a good cleaning, too. Mix one cup of white vinegar with a gallon of warm water and wipe down the bricks with a damp cloth. You can also use that mixture to clean brick flooring.

CANDLE WAX

If you love to light candles around your home, you’ve no doubt had a few incidents with candle wax melting onto wood surfaces. To remove the wax, first use a blow dryer at the hottest setting to soften the wax and remove what loosens up. For

the stubborn residue, rub with a cloth soaked in equal parts of white vinegar and water. Wipe dry with soft cloth.

IS SOMEONE SMOKING?

Rid a room of a smoke smell by filling a shallow bowl about ¾ full of white vinegar.

Place the bowl where the smell is the strongest. The odor should be gone in about a day.

MY LUNCHBOX STINKS!

Yuck! Who wants to eat lunch from a lunchbox that still smells like the tuna sandwich from yesterday? A quick fix is to soak a slice of white bread in vinegar and put in the lunchbox overnight. That should freshen it up for the next use.

DISINFECT CUTTING BOARDS

No one wants to get sick from unsanitary utensils. To help prevent the spread of germs, disinfect cutting boards after each use by wiping them down with full-strength white vinegar. It just takes moments and can prevent cross-contamination during meal preparation.

BRIGHTEN UP SILVER

To clean silverware or your silver jewelry, you don’t need to buy cleaners or spend hours rubbing down each piece. Mix up ½ cup of white vinegar and two tablespoons of baking soda. Soak your silver in the mixture for two to three hours. Rinse with cold water and dry with a soft cloth.

There are those foods with smells that linger long after they’ve been consumed.

Cabbage, greens, and bacon – they’re good, but you don’t want to smell them hours later. Mix ½ cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water; bring to boil until almost all the liquid is boiled out. That should eliminate the odor.

CAN’T SEE OUT THE WINDSHIELD?

Wiper blades can get dirty and make a blurry mess when you try to use them. Use full-strength white vinegar and wipe them down with a clean rag to keep the blades free of dirt and road debris.

OVERCOMING GAPS A Three Part Series PART 2

THE POWER OF THE INTERNET

According to a 2018 report from the American Association of University Women, women experience $513 billion in lost wages a year due to the pay gap. Women, in general, earn 80 cents for every dollar a man earns.

Worse: black women earn only 61 cents to every dollar that white men earn. While progress is being made, it’s not fast: improvements have all but leveled out since the ‘80s.

The Gender Gap is the discrepancy between men and women. The phrase itself is vague and doesn’t specifically connect with any one challenge that women face. This is part two of a three-part series that details one gap, a thought exercise around it and some ideas on overcoming it. This issue’s focus: Pay. The Pay Gap and the studies around it aren’t new news. From women leaving the workforce to have children, to lacking the confidence to ask for a promotion, it’s a problem that is costing women money. One study through PayScale, an independent research organization tracking the pay gap, shows that women are less likely to have higher-level and higherpaying jobs compared to men.

Their research shows that an equal percentage of men and women start off in lower positions that do not manage people. By mid-career, 47% of men are a manager or higher, and 40% of women reach this level. By late career (45+) 57% of men are managers or higher, and women are holding tight to only 41%. On top of that, 8% of men rise to executive level compared to women’s 3%.

First things first: do you think you’re being hit by the Pay Gap? Look around at other people at work that are in a similar position. Do you know what they are being paid? Have you not gotten a raise in a while, or perhaps when you came on board, you had to fight for your current salary? Or was it lower than you know you’re worth? If so, the Pay Gap probably is affecting you. Here are a few ways you can help yourself and your fellow woman:

Take some time with Google. Check to see what you should be making in the position that you’re in. Lots of industries are taking initiative and publishing salaries, both starting and for those that are farther along in the field. And if there isn’t anything official? Search social media: there has been an uprising of women sharing their salaries – and better, men sharing their salaries. Hop on LinkedIn and ask a connection (preferably, a white male, since they are the group that most studies and “typical pay” are based off of) what they are making. This leads into our next tip…

ASK

Do you work with people that are considered your counterparts? Even if they are above or below you, ask.

If you need some confidence, take a deep breath and think: this affects no one but the employer, and if you are both doing a similar job, you should be making a similar salary. It won’t cost them money or risk your money to be transparent if there is some kind of gender gap happening at your work.

ASK AGAIN

This ask is different: if you’ve realized that you’re making less than you should be, it might be time for that raise. Take some time to make your case before you ask: write out, much like a resume, what you’ve accomplished since being there – as well as how long it’s been since your last official raise. Keep this list quantitative, not qualitative. You’ve “grown sales by 3%” versus you “do a really great job at your reports.” Keep it concise and specific – and then when you do ask, set a meeting, ask for a specific amount and present your case.

Taking The Trade School PaTh

Upcoming high school graduates are considering their future. The question is not, “What profession do I want?” but instead, “What professions require a short-term education to achieve a high-paying career in great demand?” Bypassing the possibility of an expensive advanced education, which results in a chance of substantial debt and unemployment, students want to know an alternative path.

One solution to consider is a trade school. By eliminating the classes, which provide university students a well-rounded education, trade schools place students on a fast track to specialize in one field. Rather than taking notes in a lecture style class environment, technical or vocational schools use demonstrations and a hands-on learning approach in a small class. With the same cost as one year of college, participants can elect to choose a path in construction, mechanical repair, industrial work, technology, or health care to receive a certificate, diploma, or associate’s degree in 10 months or just two years.

And, the news for trade schools continues to get better!

THE LARGER PICTURE

Roughly 70 percent of the United States workforce does not possess a college degree; therefore, the need is high for applications of software developers, computer network architects, dental hygienists, electricians, electronics engineers, heavy equipment operators, masonry workers, nurses, plumbers, and technology specialists.

What may surprise even you is the preceding list comprises just a small number of the highest paid trade school careers! Factoring in the profession can offer a self-employment possibility to create a business or reach the promotion of a higher level within the field by becoming a manager.

THE MIKE ROWE INITIATIVE

Described as an American television host and narrator, Mike Rowe is often associated with the Discovery Channel program Dirty Jobs or the podcast, “The Way I Heard It: True Tales for the Curious Mind with a Short Attention Span.” He is one boisterous advocate for the future tradesmen and the companies, who seek employees to hire. Through his TV series, Rowe traveled to every state to work with skilled workers who, as he says, “help keep our polite society humming along. They were individuals, who found

an opportunity where no one else thought to look. They were entrepreneurs running successful businesses. They were happy people who managed to figure out a positive work-life balance. They didn’t resemble the unflattering, blue-collar workers often portrayed in the media. This misconception resulted in an undeniable disparity between available skilled jobs and the unemployed local population.”

In seeing “Help Wanted” signs, mainly when unemployment consumed news headlines, our society didn’t, and still doesn’t, have a trained workforce standing by or willing to fill the positions that exist.

AN INFORMATIVE WEBSITE

Rowe started an initiative to launch the Mike Rowe Works Foundation to promote the jobs of skilled labor. The website mikeroweworks.org features a lofty list of resources from news, job opportunities throughout the United States, and a chance to receive a “Work Ethic Scholarship.

The focus is not on grades but to find an aspiring worker, who values “the importance of work ethic, personal responsibility, delayed gratification, and a positive attitude.”

A LIST OF ADVOCATES

Similar to advocates like Mike Rowe, there are countless others, who are on a mission to change the stereotype of working a trade.

You will find them in self-employed and large businesses, classrooms, family gatherings, household members, and family friends.

Start listening. Conversations will include local news of local businesses, who experience longterm shortages of qualified people.

Students should capitalize on the moment to ask questions and talk to the very people who can assist in broadening their prospects.

The trade school momentum is at a high! Today’s students can grab hold and sail high toward a great career and prosperity!

Follow the Fear

I’ve been teaching and performing improv for over half my life. In NYC, I was part of a cast that performed on Friday and Saturday nights, offBroadway, for ten years. I’ve since repurposed my improv training for professionals, and to this date, there is one phrase that sticks with me for now over 22 odd years, a phrase by the legendary improv teacher Del Close:

FOLLOW THE FEAR.

It’s such a funny phrase, follow the fear. We’ve learned, as humans, to run. Fight or flight happens when we perceive a harmful event, attack, or threat to survival. We generally move away from fear, because we’re afraid of things that might harm us.

Worse: psychology shows that fear tends to worsen as the fear of the fear response occurs. Basically, we become more fearful of something because of the fear response than the thing we were originally afraid of.

So why follow the fear?

I’m not suggesting that you go chase a bear or swim with a shark. If something is going to end or harm your life and health, then please, don’t follow it. But what about the things we are afraid of that aren’t going to kill us?

As adults, we tend to fear mistakes and failure. We play it safe in life and work, because…why? Because the mistake might kill us, right?

Big surprise, no: most mistakes we make as adults don’t end in death and dismemberment. Many of them don’t even end in losing money, a job, or a relationship. They are usually moments of feeling silly or uncomfortable. That’s not to say we should always try to fail: it’s a privileged thing, to play to fail, and we can’t all afford to fail. When we’re constantly trying not to make a mistake, however, we never succeed.

We should follow our fear because of what lies on the other side of it.

Afraid to ask for a raise or promotion?

Start a class or new hobby? Ask someone to coffee? Stop and think: what’s on the other side of the fear?

Something amazing? Would you have regret if you didn’t follow it?

If you know you’re not following your fear, here’s an easy plan to get you started: First, isolate what you’re actually afraid of. Let’s take the example of asking for a raise or promotion.

What are you afraid of, the raise or promotion, or being told no? Why are you afraid of that?

Now, think about what you’re actually afraid of, and the worst-case scenario.

If you ask for the raise, and you are afraid of being told no, what happens if you are told no? Do you lose your job? No one is going to fire you for asking; you won’t ruin the company, explode the earth, lose your family.

The literal worst-case scenario is you are told no and you feel a little low about yourself for a bit. That’s it.

Then, think about the best-case scenario. What if they say yes, you can have a raise? Or even, in a few months you can have a raise?

Compare the best and worst case: are you willing to risk the opportunity of the best-case over the fear of your worst-case?

After you’ve realized that the fear of ‘what if’ in the worst-case isn’t worth the possibility of best-case (because it never is) start your plan for following this fear. Don’t just jump in if you aren’t a jump in kind of person: take time to plan it, and whenever you hit a new fear, run it through this funnel.

See what you’re actually afraid of, balance the worst and best results, and move forward.

ReTHINKING Drinking:

My Sobering Journey!

Some of you may have done a double-take when you read the title of this article. I can hear the “I’ll believe it when I see it,” comments from where I sit. But hang on a minute, and hear me out.

A little over six months ago, my husband Tim had a very serious stroke.

I’m not going into details here, as many know or have read our story (written by our daughter Brooke) in this magazine, as well as on Facebook and in Caring Bridge posts. However, I feel that I must start at the beginning… I plan to continue writing this column as long as there is interest and if I change just one person’s life, then it will be worth it.

The decision to stop drinking was not made consciously for either Tim or me. We were camped out in ICU after his stroke, and later practically lived in inpatient rehab – the hospital was our home for nearly a month! Beer, wine, and cocktails were not only missing from the hospital menu; they were nowhere to be found at all in that environment.

Despite everything, though, at one point, I began to notice how well I had been sleeping. As you can imagine, a recliner pushed up next to a hospital bed (I wanted to be close enough for him to reach out and touch me if he needed anything) is not most people’s idea of a comfortable sleeping arrangement. But somehow I rested amazingly well during our hospital stay. I believe that was a whole lot of God’s help, but also a little bit because I had no opportunity to have, and thus, had not been drinking, any alcohol.

When we were finally (finally!) back home, we opened our refrigerator and noticed it was full of beer and wine. I looked at the bottles and cans and wondered, “Are we going to settle back into our old routine? Or create a totally new one?” I can’t really explain my reasoning – perhaps it was my competitive nature – but I had been several weeks without alcohol, and I was kind of curious. How long could I go without it?

Ultimately, I was just not ready to go down that road again: the almost daily ‘happy’ hours, weekends, holidays, and of course, there was almost always something to celebrate. When I look back, I was drinking alcohol on more days than I was happy to admit. Plus there were the little side

effects that every drinker takes as a given: waking up every few hours, dry mouth/being thirsty, headaches, fatigue, etc.…if you are a drinker, you know the drill.

In the back of my head I was thinking of all the positive things that could happen in this soberminded journey without alcohol…

1. Everyone knows that cancer and alcohol are not a good combination, well… with Breast Cancer 2.0 now on my resume that seemed like a HUGE reason to give it up!

2. Being a support system for my husband.

3. Surely I would lose weight.

4. Sleeping – yes, sleeping! I mean REAL sleep – the kind where you lay your head down and fall asleep within a few minutes. If later in the night you do wake up, you can go right back to sleep (a completely new concept for me!).

5. Waking up with a clear head….

Every. Single. Day! I would love to have you follow along with me on this journey.

You may not have a plan to be

completely alcohol-free (AF) like I am trying, but maybe you want to take a mindful break from your daily glass of wine, or simply cut back on what you are currently drinking. It’s never too early to renegotiate your relationship with alcohol.

Whatever your choice, be sure to give yourself some grace when things don’t go exactly as planned. You may slip up at some point, no matter what your intention is, just forgive yourself and keep moving forward!

Pros and Cons of

TRADITIONAL & ONLINE COLLEGE College is a big decision, but it doesn’t always mean you have to take the ordinary route. After interviewing both traditional college students and online college students, we have put together a few of the pros and cons of both.

ONLINE: PROS 1. FLEXIBILITY

To give a brief rundown, each semester is typically only eight weeks long, and professors will give assignments that are due by midnight every Monday, which gives students a full week to work as they wish.

This leaves online students with the ability to create a flexible schedule that harmonizes with their work schedule, family responsibilities, extracurriculars, and special interests.

3. GROUP PROJECTS

Typically, the further an online student gets into their education, the more likely they will be introduced to online group projects. The problem is that your assigned group members are likely taking advantage of that flexible schedule as well. With each member having his or her own schedule, it can be hard to accomplish the group project in a timely manner unless ground rules are set ahead of time.

TRADITIONAL: PROS 1. STRUCTURE

With online college, students skip the extra expenses such as books, housing fees, meal plans, and gas in commuting to campus. Of course, fees will vary depending on the university chosen.

For students accustomed to routine and assigned schedules, traditional college is the ticket. Traditional college gives the advantage of discipline through weekly routines to keep students focused on their end goal.

The world is up for grabs with online college, as students gain the ability to discover where their true passions stand. ONLINE: CONS 1. SOCIAL INTERACTION

Online college can make it difficult to cultivate new friendships without the regular class schedules, dorm common areas, dining halls, and so on. According to an online college student, it is important for them to stay active and find a way to connect in their local community.

Otherwise, a lack of social interaction can lead to social anxiety and depression.

2. RESPONSIBILITY TO BE SELF-FOCUSED

With the blessing of a flexible schedule, it is fundamental that online students are self-motivated to establish designated times to solely focus on their studies. Many students tend to struggle with being easily distracted or with procrastination, which can make it difficult to properly accomplish online work. It is recommended that online students plan exciting activities later in the week, so that they are motivated to accomplish their studies earlier.

Traditional colleges offer a variety of clubs that hosts events and/or meetings on a regular basis to help engage students in their major and college campus. Keeping students entertained and excited to come back each semester, these social clubs look great on resumes and allow students to grow as individuals.

Instead of solely focusing on accomplishing their studies to the best of their ability, traditional students may come up against the battle of timed schedules. 2. EATING HABITS

With a busy schedule that leads to many grab-and-go, traditional college students tend to lack nutritional meals to fuel their body throughout the day. With the added stress of constant exams and homework due on a daily basis, many traditional college students may snack out of nervous habit.

3. FINALS STRESS

Traditional college students are faced each semester with a final exam and/or midterm exam that can play a major role in their final grade, and that requires oodles of studying that tends to cause stress.

The Piedmont Craftsmen, Inc. center is a shop with inventory provided by local artists, crafters, and collectors of fine art pieces. The Diggs Gallery at WSSU is a natural standout with contemporary and striking African and African-American artwork. Not only was this gallery dubbed as one of the top ten African-American galleries in the nation, but the Smithsonian also recognized it as one of the best facilities showcasing black art! This is one of the largest spaces in North Carolina dedicated to presenting black art. It is also a teaching facility and a community center. This gallery’s artwork is stunning, truthful, historical, and enlightening.

Similar to most living things, your lawn speaks a unique language indicating health and strength or stress and barrenness. Have you ever walked over your lawn to leave behind a path of footprints? Blades of grass do not wilt; grass requires water.

Additional signs are: • mushrooms and other fungi signify a need for drainage or less precipitation.

• cat and dog urine contain damaging amounts of nitrogen, resulting in small patches of deadened grass, usually brown in color.

Amazingly, grass appears as a network of interwoven roots collecting water and nutrients.

Some roots anchor down into the soil while others spread to develop new root systems, which influence growth. With a lack of one of its essential needs, the surface reveals problems occurring underneath the ground. Often enough, barren areas will materialize and grow larger. One of the issues may be the soil composition.

SOIL COMPOSITION

The first action is to determine the problem. Use a sharp spade to cut

at least a few inches below the area surrounding the dead turf. The goal is to lift for inspection. Similar to most plants, grass performs well in dirt comprised of rich organic soil that is well drained. In a small area, remove at least six inches from the surface and replace with topsoil.

Determine if the location lacks drainage, has too much shade, or includes red clay (compaction and little air), or if the soil is loamy (lacking nutrients). If adding grass seed covered with straw is not likely to grow, it may be time to test your Ph levels.

email and offer the level of soil fertility, which is a measurement of the soil’s pH. The scale runs from 0 to 14. While seven is neutral, most grasses prefer slightly acidic soil, ranging between 6.5 to 6.8. When the soil’s pH levels run too high, additives such as powdered limestone can improve fertility or you can add of sulfur when numbers are low.

For great results, soil tests conducted every few years can offer direct answers. Other types of amendments include topsoil, compost, or fertilizer.

SOIL TESTING

One common question is, “What should I use to fertilize my lawn?” Most bags come in a three-number combination.

The first represents nitrogen, N, which promotes green, leafy growth. The middle number, accounting for the percentage of phosphorous, establishes seeds, builds strong roots, and boosts the health of the fruit. Lastly, potassium offers disease resistance to plants, promotes hardiness and vigorous growth, and protects against heat.

While a bag may present a 20-5-10 combination, each number signifies the percentage of each nutrient as a whole. Most lawn fertilizers have high amounts of nitrogen, such as 30%, and low rates of phosphorous and potassium.

Before starting to guess what the problem with your soil is, you have a resource close to home that can help you: the Cooperative Extension Office of Winston-Salem. While an extension agent will be happy to answer questions, one recommendation will be to have your soil tested at a nominal cost. Results arrive by

Nature has the means to protect our environment. It may come as a surprise, but grass clippings contain a large amount of nitrogen. By allowing the clippings to remain in place, the process of decomposition will offer a boost of nutrients.

It’s been over five years since Dara Kurtz heard the words, “You have cancer.” At the time, she was forty-two, and her two daughters were eleven and fourteen. Dara, who lives in Lewisville, North Carolina with her family, went through a lot: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and more surgery. It was when the doctors said, “Congratulations, you’re done with treatment, go back to living your life,” that life got really hard for Dara.

“You would think the hardest part of going through cancer would be the actual treatment. And, as hard as that was, it was the quiet moments when I was done with treatment, when the fear and anxiety started to follow me around like my shadow. It was a challenging time for me because I didn’t have the hospital appointments to go to or the other patients to lean on. I didn’t really know what to do to help myself. That’s when I realized I had a choice: I could stay in that space and let fear of cancer get in the way of living my life, or I could do something about it. I went through a lot of counseling, did a ton of work on myself, and decided I wanted to help other people who might find themselves in a similar situation.”

That’s when Dara wrote the Amazon best-selling book, Crush Cancer, about how to navigate the challenges a cancer diagnosis brings. It’s for patients and their families and provides specific tips and tools to help people get through hearing the words, “You have cancer.”

But Dara didn’t stop there. “As much as I love Crush Cancer, and as proud of it as I am because I know it’s helping so many people, I wanted there to be an online component, a way people could sit in their homes and get my advice, hear me talk to them. SCHOOLING YOUR BODY ON BALANCE

• Stand on a Bosu ball or thick cushion in tandem or on one leg and try for 30 seconds (or just try to increase your time at each practice session) The month of August signals “back to school” for many families. Parents and grandparents pay attention to many details in August as they prepare their loved ones for a successful return to educational settings, from preschool to grad school. Just as children need to be prepared to learn, adults need to be prepared for balance and fall prevention. Education can positively change a person’s life and an unwanted fall can negatively change it. A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that the number of deaths from falls has increased from 8,613 in the year 2000 to an alarming 25,189 in 2016. While not everyone included in these worrisome statistics are older adults, adults over 65 years of age do have the highest risk for falls (especially those over 75 years of age) and the best potential for decreasing this risk through evidence-based fall prevention programs.

There are several risk factors that influence risk for falls besides age, including medication use, depression, diabetes, dizziness, loss of strength, abnormal blood pressure, and poor balance. This article will focus on balance and the need to “school your body” for better balance. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, a balance problem is an issue that makes it difficult to maintain stable and upright positions when standing, walking, and even sitting. Factors that contribute to balance deficits include muscle weakness, joint stiffness, inner ear problems, certain medications, lack of activity or a sedentary lifestyle, and simple aging. Other more serious conditions, such as stroke or arthritis just to name a few, can also impact balance and the four main bodily systems that work together to maintain postural control (vision, inner ear-vestibular, sensation/proprioception, and musculoskeletal systems). Problems in any one or more of these systems and/or how they integrate can make a person feel unsteady, dizzy, and fearful of performing daily tasks that were once simple and automatic. Sometimes these symptoms occur more often when a person is trying to do more than one thing at the same time or “dual-task.” Examples are trying to walk up or down steps while carrying groceries or turning the head to talk to another person while walking. It is not uncommon for busy adults to talk on the phone, try to unlock the door, hang on to the dog leash, and stay

upright all at the same time. If poor balance has resulted in a fall, especially one causing injuries that require medical attention, then an evaluation by a physical therapist (PT) or primary care provider would be a good first step in preventing potential fall-related injuries like fractures, hemorrhaging, or death. A PT can perform a detailed evaluation and determine why falls are happening, along with prescribing individualized exercises. An MD can reconcile medications and check for chronic medical conditions that may be contributing to the overall fall risk.

Should adults care about balance if they have never had a fall? They sure should!

Building strength, stronger bones, better flexibility, and better balance can never start too soon. Adding a few challenging balance exercises to a regular workout schedule could make the difference between a fractured wrist and a tumble that can be laughed about with nothing hurt besides pride. It is easy to overlook the need for balance exercise.

Most active adults will do strength training, aerobic exercise, and maybe some stretching, but few make an intentional plan to work on balance. Here are some suggestions for general balance exercises to improve the chances of avoiding falls (if you have already had an injurious fall, please see a PT or MD). Practice these in a safe environment like a corner or near a wall or counter: • Practice standing in “tandem” stance or heeltoe without arm support (shoot for 30 seconds or longer) • Practice standing on one leg without arm support (shoot for 30 seconds or longer); practice with both the right and left legs

• Try any of the first three exercises, but shake your head “no” side to side while balancing • Try any of the first three exercises, but close your eyes.

For any of the balance exercise suggestions, please see a healthcare provider first if you have a fall history or other condition that impacts balance.

Always practice balance in a safe environment (near a wall, counter, in a corner or with a friend to spot you). Learning about balance, and working on it, can save your life!

Fishing Trip Tips & Checklist

Statistics may surprise you: Out of the 46 million Americans who fish, over a third of them are women based on a news report by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation.

Not just one demographic – fishing is fun for the whole family!

First fishing trip or fish regularly? Here are some useful tips and tidbits for going on your next fishing trip, including local places where you can buy your bait, obtain a fishing license, and find fish.

Understand freshwater versus saltwater fishing, scout out the habitat, find the best bait, cast with confidence, conquer the challenges of fishing in the wind, and get prepared with a checklist of what to bring.

FRESHWATER LAKE FISHING

Freshwater, as opposed to saltwater, fishing involves water that has 0.05% salinity.

The species of fish are entirely different. Salmon are often found in freshwater when they are born, spend years at sea, and come back to spawn in the same freshwater place they were born.

Bodies of freshwater, such as ponds, lakes, and rivers typically have a creel (harvest) limit, which allows you to remove only a certain amount of fish per day.

Understand the depths of the body of water by referring to a topographical map. The map may also show you locations of sunken man-made fish cribs where fish can hide.

HABITATS, HANGOUTS & HIDEOUTS

Take into consideration the weather and specific water temperatures the fish prefer. Learn to think like a fish. What kind of bait, temperatures, and hangout spots do they prefer?

Generally, the hotter it is outside, the deeper you should fish. Often, fish will seek out cooler water and delve deeper when the temperature outside rises.

Baitfish and the giant fish that eat them tend to hang out in these areas. They also stick close to safe havens, like sunken tree structures, branches, weeds, and plant beds to avoid falling prey. Larger fish like bass, pike, and walleye like to hunt for other fish in these places.

BETTER BAIT

When it comes to food fish find appetizing, the best bait is typically fresh, live bait. Minnows, worms, wax worms, crayfish, grasshoppers, and crickets are popular. Artificial bait should mimic real bait as closely as possible. Do your research about what fish you’re trying to attract and what bait they’re looking for. For example, crickets are especially appealing to bream fish, while raw chicken livers or hot dog pieces are more appetizing to catfish.

CAST & CATCH WITH CONFIDENCE

Work on casting a spinning rod and bait caster with precision and accuracy. You may not be a pro yet, but conduct your casting with confidence, as you stay calm, cool, and collected. Practice your cast before you embark on your fishing trip.

Timing matters! Be as responsive as possible. Be alert to the jerk as you hold your fishing rod with a little tension.

GO WITH THE WIND

When the wind is strong, the baitfish may become pushed closer to the shore, leading you to the bigger fish you’re seeking.

CLEAN HANDS

Make sure your hands are clean and scent free.

Wash them well, removing any odors that fish may detect on your bait or lures.

TRY THE QUIETER KAYAK

Try fishing from a kayak. Scared of scaring the fish away with a loud boat engine? Arm yourself with a paddle instead to get around and sneak up on those suckers.

FISHING TRIP CHECKLIST

First things first: Get a fishing license and stay current on the local fishing laws and state rules and regulations. Next, gather a rod, reel, bait, tackle box, needle nose pliers, net, ice chest, knife, scissors, anti-bacterial soap, first aid kit (be prepared and stay safe), sunscreen, hat, water bottle, snacks, and life jacket.

Get your gear together, plan out your trip, practice your cast, and don’t forget to enjoy yourself as you attempt to catch your next meal.

Writers Who Read The Great American Reads

Throughout history,

Sometimes these novels are so beloved that they are still attracting people to them. Featured on PBS, The Great American Read was an eight-part series that told the background stories of the 100 best-loved novels in America. Voted on in a national survey, the books vary in genres and age groups.

As I looked at the list, I noticed I had read many of the titles. So, what better way to end my summer reading with rereading my favorite book picks from The Great American Read.

THE HELP

THE GIVER

Based on a true story, The Help tells a fictional story of life in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s. The novel is narrated by Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson. Aibileen and Minny are AfricanAmerican maids who work for Caucasian families.

Skeeter has returned to her family’s farm outside of Jackson after graduating from the University of Mississippi. Her dream is to become a writer. Skeeter takes a job at the local newspaper, writing a household tips column. However, this position is only a step to publishing a book and writing for a company in New York. After being home for only a short period of time and learning that the family’s version of the departure of their maid, Constantine, was false, an idea for a book comes to her mind. With the help of Aibileen and Minny, Skeeter publishes a novel, describing the life of African-American maids in the South and their relationship with their Caucasian employers. The Help is a must-read and was number 16 on The Great American Read! Plus, this book gives readers the timeless quote: “You is kind. You is smart. You is important.”

Number 44 on the list is the timeless classic novel, The Giver. I first read this book in middle school and now teach it to my students. Originally published in 1993, The Giver centers around twelve-year-old Jonas who lives in a utopian society. Yet, in this world, there is no pain nor feelings and everyone is considered “the same.”

In addition, the society gives its citizens jobs or “life assignments” to help the community stay content and free from trouble. Jonas becomes the “Receiver of Memory.” After taking the assignment, he soon begins to realize the dark, complex secrets of their utopian world. Along the way Jonas interacts with other characters, such as his father, his mother, sister Lily, The Chief Elder, and the community’s The Giver. Since its publication, The Giver has become one of the most influential novels and is the 1994 Newbery Medal winner.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA SERIES

Did you know that author C.S. Lewis destroyed the first version of The Chronicles of Narnia and started over, because his friends didn’t like it? I know that is hard to believe for an enduring series, such as The Chronicles of Narnia.

The seven-book series starts with the novel, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and draws readers into the lives of Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie in London during World War II. Over the course of the books, readers travel with the Pevensie family and others on adventures of magic, war battles, and to the fantasy land of Narnia. For some people, The Chronicles of Narnia has a deeper meaning, full of Christian symbols and inspiration. Placed as number nine on the list, this series is one that you can’t miss.

Make the Most of Your Music Get Your Next Recording Project Out There!

Make the most of your musical talent by collaborating or doing a solo recording project that you can publish and distribute online. People can purchase your music on iTunes, Amazon, and other sites where you can upload, play, and sell your music. It’s rewarding to share your musical recordings. You can order your own download cards, CDs, and even vinyl to distribute and sell.

Here’s how to get your next recording project off the ground and into the ears of many interested listeners.

MAKE MUSIC MAGIC HAPPEN!

Abracadabra! Map and plan out what you want to accomplish, whether it’s a single or a more ambitious full-length album.

Involve your family and friends with the recording process.

If you don’t already have original songs, start writing and co-writing. Learn basic song structures, brainstorm, and have a guitar, piano, and/or keyboard at the ready to define and develop your melody. Determine which key you want to use and whether you’d rather go with major or minor chords. Find the right chord progression. Then, pick out your tempo. Is it relaxed pop or upbeat, danceable rock?

“Know thy genre” and work out the details, part by part, verse by verse and chorus by chorus. Start with bare bones and gradually add on. Make each song unique with your authentic voice. Tell a story or use universal life philosophies.

Go with the flow and be patient with what comes. Sometimes it comes together right away, and other times it’s a long, slow process.

REEL ‘EM IN, AND MAKE ‘EM WONDER

Remember that some rules can be broken. Lines don’t always have to rhyme. They can still be catchy and “hook-y,” drawing a listener in and

creating “earworms” (words and melodies that constantly stick in your mind). Not everything always has to make sense. Leave elements to the imagination so your audience ends up with questions, conflict, and mystery.

• Remember: the sky’s the limit with creativity. Unless you only create mainstream hits, it’s important to keep an open mind as you write and create music from the heart. Don’t be afraid to be too indie. You can carve out your own niche. Challenge yourself and your collaborators to do things differently. Try a new approach or perspective as you put your heads together and see what happens!

• If you can’t afford to buy a top quality mic, don’t worry. You can borrow or rent one, or go to a studio to record. There are always options.

Trading and bartering services may be helpful for someone on a budget. Use your creativity to advantage.

• Turn a room in your home into your own home recording studio. Set up equipment and get to work on recording. You can install inexpensive soundproof panels to improve the quality of your home recordings. Google “DIY home recording studio” for ideas and checklists.

Who doesn’t love to save money?

While it may not be the most fun of topics, money is crucial for our everyday lives and something that most of us could use more of. By being able to save money in less entertaining sections of our lives, we open up the possibility of being able to do more enjoyable things. Here are some easy ways to save money in your household with minimal to moderate effort.

MEAL PLAN

Let’s be honest, a huge chunk of our budgets goes to food. Whether it is eating out or cooking meals at home, we all need to eat and want to enjoy our food. What can trip our budgets up is the lack of planning, which can tend to cause excess take out and lastminute grocery trips. When you plan out your meals for the week or month, make sure to be realistic but also costconscious. If you are used to going out for dinner twice a month and getting takeout every week – maybe cut it down to a dinner out once a month and takeout every other week. Even this small adjustment could easily save $200/month. By planning your meals in advance, you will also save time spent during the day wondering about what you’re going to make for dinner that night, as well as lowering your stress level.

LIMIT GROCERY SHOPPING

Every time you walk into a store, you risk making impulse purchases. Stores count on this and specifically merchandise themselves to try to get you to buy things you don’t need. The less often you walk into stores, the less likely you are to purchase things on an impulse. Make your grocery plan once a week, and if you run out of something before your next planned trip to the grocery store – try to make it work without it.

ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT

During the summer, try setting your AC a degree higher each week. Eventually, you will get to a point where it is too warm for your liking, but it’s very likely you will find that a few degrees higher than what you were originally set to is not noticeable in your everyday life – but it will be noticeable in your electric bill. Do the same during the winter with your heat for savings year-round. Ideally, you should be wearing similar things inside as you do outside – so during the winter have the heat set so that you are wearing sweatpants and socks, and during the summer have your air conditioning set so that you are wearing shorts and tanks.

KEEP UP WITH MAINTENANCE

The better you keep up with the standard maintenance of your house, the less likely you are to have major issues. Regularly clean your appliances (such as your dishwasher and stove) to keep them running efficiently, and change out your air filters on a regular basis.

Keeping all your systems running smoothly will help save money in the long run.

CHECK YOUR INSULATION

You can call your energy company for them to do an audit of your house to see if you have leaks that are causing your air or heat to leave the house unnecessarily. Check your crawl spaces and attic to make sure they are effectively insulated, as well as checking to make sure your windows are sealed properly. If they are not, you can either replace them with energy-efficient windows (which admittedly can be expensive in the short term), or you can use the plastic sealer to keep the breezes away.

CHANGE YOUR LIGHTBULBS

When your old lightbulbs burn out, replacing them with LED lightbulbs will not only lower your electric bill costs, but it will also save you time as they last significantly longer than traditional lightbulbs do. There are also many options on the type of light available, such as daylight, so you can have a better quality of light available in your house as well.

NEGOTIATE

Have you ever called your cable provider to ask for a lower rate? If not, you could be losing hundreds of dollars over a lifetime. The same can be done for all service providers, such as your cell phone service, internet provider, and even security systems. Doing quick research online you can find what deals they are offering for new clients and deals their competitors are offering – use this to negotiate rate decreases and make sure to ask when it will expire so you can call back then.

Why Are You Hungry…

Again?

Do you find yourself feeling hungry again shortly after eating a meal? It’s incredible how much time we spend thinking about food – we get up and head to the kitchen to fix breakfast (make that coffee first), we plan lunch during the early part of the workday, and later on, we check-in with family or friends to make dinner plans for the evening.

For many folks, their social life revolves around food. We meet for breakfast or brunch on the weekend, lunch with work friends, and enjoy dinner at home or at restaurants with family and friends. We have potluck dinners at church, snacks at club meetings, popcorn at the movies. We bring food to sick friends; we celebrate life events with cakes and pies; we share holiday meals. Do we ever stop eating???

Then, why do so many of us feel hungry all the time?

The reasons are varied and are likely some you’ve heard all your life. So, as a refresher, remember that . . .

You need to eat enough protein. You know the sources – meat, poultry, fish, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds, or whole grains.

Some dairy products also have protein.

Don’t you find yourself feeling fuller when you eat a meal that includes protein? A hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs gets you easily through to lunchtime, right?

Be sure you have enough fat in your diet.

By eliminating fat completely, we’re doing more harm than good. The right amount of fat slows digestion and helps us feel fuller, longer. We need good fats to keep skin glowing and hair shiny. Healthy fats to consider include avocados, olive oil, and yogurt.

Get enough sleep. Bet that hit a nerve!

We are a sleep-deprived nation – always on the go, gotta keep to that schedule, and ‘gett’r done.’ We plan everything, but do we plan for sleep? No, we wait until we’ve gotten everything done and then think about sleep. As a result, we go to bed exhausted and wake up in the same condition. So, what do we do? We eat to fuel up, instead of sleeping to rest up. Just go to bed and sleep through the night.

Drink plenty of water. Water helps to reduce appetite. Studies show that a person who drinks two cups of water

before a meal is more likely to reduce their calorie intake by about 600 calories. We’ve all heard that we need to drink eight glasses of water per day. You carry your water bottle around all day, but are you drinking it? Make it more interesting by adding some fruit slices or mint if needed. Monitor how many times you refill your water bottle during the day. You’re probably not drinking as much as you think you are.

We need fiber. Fiber helps keep us full.

Start your day with a hot bowl of oatmeal – add some nuts, a scoop of almond butter or peanut butter, raisins, and some honey – now, that’s a good meal!

Sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber and so easy to prepare. Add flaxseed to your veggies or smoothies.

Eat those Brussels sprouts!

Try them baked with walnuts and a drizzle of flavored vinegar – yum.

What are some other reasons we think we’re hungry?

• We eat when we’re bored. The fix? Read a book, work on a project, talk to each other.

• We wait too long between meals. Try sticking to a meal schedule or eat smaller, more frequent meals. No one wants to enter the ‘hangry’ stage!

• We eat too fast. There’s a reason that fast food places are everywhere. We need to learn to enjoy our food.

• We stress eat. There’s the big one!

Had a stressful day – find the ice cream, candy, etc. Learn to destress without using food. Walk the dog, play catch with your kids, talk about your day; find some activity to help transition from work to home.

So, are you really hungry? Try keeping a food diary for a week just to see what and when you eat. You may be surprised at what you find by the end of the week.

THE US COAST GUARD CELEBRATES ITS BIRTHDAY – AUGUST 4 Semper Paratus (Always Ready)

BY VONDA HENDERSON The US Coast Guard was established on August 4, 1790. Congress reached an agreement to build ten ships with the charge of protecting the country’s revenue and enforcing trade laws, and also to prevent smuggling. It is the longest seagoing service in the US. Originally known as Revenue-Marine, its formal name became the US Coast Guard in 1915.

Today, the US Coast Guard is responsible for protecting our coastlines and waterways, the environment, US economic interests, and national security. The US Coast Guard is considered first responders to terrorism threats to coastal waterways and seaports. In fact, their Safety and Response Teams train alongside Navy SEALS. The US Coast Guard also has its own AntiTerrorism Team. The team was formed in 2002 in response to 9/11 and is known as the Maritime Safety and Security Team. With over 100,000 miles of coastline, the Coast Guard stays busy. On an annual basis, they conduct around 15,000 search and rescue events.

Icebergs continue to be a danger to ships at sea. After the Titanic disaster, the International Ice Patrol was formed to patrol the waters.

Although considered one of the US military branches, the US Coast Guard is actually part of the Department of Homeland Security. In the past, they were part of the Treasury Department and the Department of Transportation. If needed, however, the Coast Guard can be transitioned to the US Navy, which occurred during World War I and II. Today, active-duty members number around 40,000, with about 1,200 deployed abroad.

The smallest of the US military branches, the US Coast Guard is the 12th largest naval force in the world.

What’s an average day for the US Coast Guard? Consider this partial list of daily statistics from maritime-executive.com: • 10 lives saved • 45 search and rescues conducted • $1.2 million in property saved • 35 investigations of pollution • 26 safety inspections on foreign vessels • 360 merchant screenings for security threats before reaching US ports • $8.7 billion in goods and commodities run through maritime transportation • 14 environmental fishery inspections conducted

Dogs are also members of the Coast Guard, used to detect explosive devices. One dog, in particular, stands out in Coast Guard history – Sinbad. Sinbad served aboard the George W. Campbell for eleven years and was awarded six service medals for his actions.

During World War II, Douglas A. Munro, Signalman 1st Class of the Coast Guard team at Guadalcanal, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism and sacrifice during that battle. His final words, “Did they get off?” are legendary.

The Coast Guard has had many well-known figures serving in its ranks over the years. Alan Hale, Jr. served; he really was a skipper after all. Arnold Palmer, Blake Edwards, Humphrey Bogart (think his Coast Guard experience helped him on The African Queen?), and Walter Cronkite.

Growing up, my grandparents always had the most beautiful vegetable garden. From sowing seeds to daily harvesting, I have many memories of examining their early morning bounty every summer when we would come to visit. I often remember being barefoot in their kitchen watching my grandma cook our favorites for dinner and snacking on perfectly ripened pickled veggies.

You see, with a garden of their size you simply had no choice but to pickle the vegetables that you felt were coming out of your ears.

Onions, peppers, carrots, you name it. I loved spending time with them, telling stories and making memories while biting into sweet, but spicy, homegrown vegetables.

Pickling veggies is not only an easy process but is the perfect way to make do with the copious amount of farm or home grown vegetables we come to know and love during the summer months.

Find some cans and save some for yourself or share with your neighbors!

Recipe yields 2, 16-ounce mason jars of pickled vegetables.

INGREDIENTS 10 ounces fresh vegetables (peppers, onions, okra, etc.)

∕3 cup rice vinegar

∕3 cup apple cider vinegar

∕3 cup granulated white sugar 2 tablespoons kosher salt 1 cup water 2 mint sprigs ¼ cup shallot

¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper

DIRECTIONS Divide vegetables (either cut or whole) and mint sprigs between two, 16-ounce mason jars.

Combine all of the remaining ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.

Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Pour over vegetables and mint sprigs.

Cover with a tight-fitting lid and let chill for 2 days. Store, covered in a refrigerator up to 2 months.

Hey, There’s MAYONNAISE in Your Hair!

Show of hands --- do you like your hair the way it is? If you’re like most people, you’d like to do something different with your hair. If you have curly hair, you wish it was straight; if it’s straight, you’d love some curls; if it’s thin, you want thick hair, and so it goes. Think of all the things we put our hair through: cut, grow, color, bleach, straighten, perm, pull in back, or wear it up. Wow – no wonder hair ends up limp, damaged, and more than uncooperative. It needs some tender, loving care.

What can we do about that? How about some home therapy for your hair --- a hair mask! Remember how good your face feels after you give yourself a mask treatment? Your hair will also reap the benefits of a hair mask. You’ve probably got all the ingredients in your cabinets. All you need to do is set aside some time to give that head of hair some TLC. As a side benefit, you get some downtime as well while you’re letting your hair soak up the nutrients of whatever hair mask you decide to mix up.

Check out these four recipes for making your own hair masks. These are just a few options; research the Internet for options that may help the texture of your hair. There are plenty to pick from – for thin, fine hair; dry hair; or hair damaged from over-processing.

The two essential things you need are time set aside for the making and using the mask and a shower cap. Also it’s recommended that you use only organic ingredients to avoid adding chemicals or pesticides to the mixture.

MAYONNAISE HAIR MASK

Ingredients: 1 cup mayonnaise 1 egg

Directions: Whisk the mayonnaise and egg to the consistency of a creamy puree.

AVOCADO HAIR MASK

Ingredients: 1 ripe avocado ¼ cup milk 1 tablespoon olive oil

Directions: Mash avocado to a smooth consistency.

Thoroughly coat the hair and cover with a shower cap for at least 30 minutes. (NOTE: You can leave on longer if you wish.)

Add milk in small amounts, stirring until the mixture has a conditioner-like texture.

Rinse with lukewarm water.

Apply from the roots to the ends of the hair and cover with a shower cap for at least 15 minutes.

Shampoo as normal.

This mask will add shine and strengthen the hair. The protein from the egg acts as a thickener to hair follicles, and the oil in the mayonnaise helps to repair damage from heat and coloring.

HONEY AND COCONUT OIL HAIR MASK

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Directions: Mix honey and coconut together and heat until melted.

Apply to hair from top to bottom and cover with a shower cap for 15 to 20 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly.

This mask helps hair become smoother and softer and allows it to regain its shine.

Add the olive oil.

Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

This hair mask helps to revive dry hair.

BANANA AND HONEY HAIR MASK

Ingredients: 2 ripe bananas 2 tablespoons honey

Directions: Mash bananas with a fork.

Add honey and mix well to smooth consistency.

Apply to slightly damp hair and cover with a shower cap for 30 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly.

Dry, damaged hair will regain moisture, and elasticity will improve.

Take some time for yourself and pamper your hair with a hair mask treatment. While you’re waiting for the mask to work its magic, have a cup of tea or coffee, put your feet up with a good book, or just permit yourself to have some quiet time. You deserve it!

What ’s a State Favorite?

Each state has something that stands out in the minds of its residents or perhaps something that everyone equates with that particular state.

When it comes to food some of the state designated foods are unique, to say the least. Especially when you consider that a legislative body took the time to select, vote, and approve that food for the state. Not every state has designated state foods, according to Wikipedia.org. Below are some of the notable findings that may amuse or surprise you that you can add to your storehouse of trivia facts. Here goes…

Many states have desserts specific to their state: • Alabama – Lane Cake (a sponge cake with candied fruit, pecans, coconut, and bourbon) • Delaware - Peach Pie Pie (they also designated their state doughnut – Boston Cream • Florida – Key Lime Pie (no surprise there folks) doughnut) • Illinois – Pumpkin Pie • Missouri – ice cream cone • Maine – Blueberry Pie with wild (simple, no special flavor) Maine blueberries • South Dakota – Kuchen (a mashup of cake and pie topped • Maryland – Smith Island Cake (8 to 14 thin layers that may be with a custard) made in a variety of flavors) • Texas – Pecan Pie • Massachusetts – Boston Cream State nuts: • Alabama – Pecan • California – almond, walnut, pistachio, pecan Oklahoma topped them all with a state meal. You’ll be hungry after reading this . . .

• Chicken Fried Steak • Corn • Pork Barbeque • Sausage with biscuits and gravy • Black-eyed Peas • Fried Okra • Strawberries • Squash • Cornbread • Pecan Pie • Grits Louisiana was very specific in selecting as their state jelly Mayhaw jelly or Louisiana sugar cane jelly; meat pie – Natchitoches meat pie; and as their cuisine – gumbo. The Natchitoches meat pie looks like a fruit pie and is filled with a mixture of ground beef, pork, green onions, peppers, garlic, and chopped onion.

As women, we’ve all been there. We are in a romantic relationship that isn’t what we deserve. Things are perhaps stagnant, or you’re just not valued. It’s in those times you can choose to go along and stay where you are, or you can make a change and remember that you deserve more. You shouldn’t stay one second longer in a situation that you know in your heart isn’t right, but you are too scared to walk away. Or you may be scared of being alone, or messing up something good. You may ask yourself, ‘Isn’t something better than nothing?’ I’m so glad you asked that question…

If you set aside all the thoughts that are causing you to second guess what your gut is telling you, seeing that there is more out there for you will be easier.

First, you have to realize that the longer you keep accepting what doesn’t work and making excuses for a grown man, the longer you’re going to keep being left unsatisfied. He’s grown and besides, even if he isn’t, it’s not your job to raise a man (unless you actually gave birth to him).

Second, it’s not your job to prove to him you’re the one, or to take so much garbage from him that you think you might choke on it. This is the time for you to realize, this is about you moving on…. way on! Prepare yourself for the second guessing to begin…

Right now, somewhere in your heart, you’re thinking that you don’t really deserve what you are experiencing in your relationship and you’re sick of hoping one day he’ll wake up and realize what it is he had, or rather what kind of a woman you really are. It’s true that everyone changes, but that change has to be his choice. He’s not going to change because you want him to, or because you let him walk all over you and your heart. I learned the hard way that there is a difference between helping a man and helping a man so he doesn’t have to help himself. When you are at this point, there’s nothing left to do but move on.

The key here, in case you haven’t figured it out, is MOVE! He may not be a jerk, or a lost cause, and you still may love him, but he needs to learn things himself. Think back to the way you fiercely chose him and choose yourself with that same fierceness. Choose your happiness and do it with as much love and conviction as you would want from a man in your life.

Someone once said, ‘There’s no better time than now to live your best life.’ Whatever living your best life means, do it! Buy that plane ticket and go on vacation, get your nails done in a color he didn’t like, go to your favorite restaurant that he never took you to…just do you!

Above everything, remember that moving on isn’t about getting into the arms of another man.

However, it is about you realizing that as long as you’re still looking at the absence of a relationship as a lack in your life, you’ll only attract people to fill in the holes. Take time to relax with friends and remember that while your man may have lost out on you, you don’t have to lose out on your life from this point forward.

From me, your BFF, remember who you really are and enjoy life because when I look at you, I see a woman too fabulous to ever let any one man ruin you or your life. You deserve better than you had, and better is ahead and begins with loving yourself.
