The View From This Side AUGUST 2018

In my limited free time, I have started reading a new book, “Girl, Wash Your Face.” Friends, if you haven’t read this book yet - please promise me that it will be next on your reading list! The author wrote, “When I find myself judging someone in my head (and let’s face it we all do!)

I force myself to stop and think of compliments about that person. By doing this, I’m learning to look for the positive instead of reaching for the negatives.” As I let that sink in, I couldn’t help but think of how much better the world would be if we ALL practiced this technique.

July was a whirlwind! Where did the lazy days of summer go?!? They seem to have gone on vacation (insert irony here, right?!) My husband and dad visited my brother and sister-in-law in Maine, and had a wonderful trip (albeit, a challenge coming home). While I didn’t get a “real” vacation, I was spoiled by some of my besties for an unexpected and amazing spa day for my birthday! As you can see from this month’s picture, we’ve also enjoyed some family time at the lake. We’re finding more and more ways to enjoy one another and it’s such a blessing.

behind the process. Doing so helps foster trust and instill a greater understanding from those who may be skeptical.

“I don’t like that.”

The ones who are implementing change have an uphill battle to face. The vision has to be shared to keep change on a gentle slope versus a difficult mountain.

“Why are you trying to change things?”

“I like things better the old way.”

Any of these sound familiar? And the bigger question – did you automatically read them in a nasally, whiny voice? These statements usually accompany situations where there’s been a change that’s not necessarily a bad thing… just different. And people resist ideas that are new or different for various reasons.

Some of those reasons include: 1. Change forces people out of their familiar comfort zones 2. Fear of the unknown 3. A lack of understanding for the change 4. Trust issues 5. Poor communication For those who are resistant to change, these questions harbor feelings of insecurity and doubt. They create tension and, in a team environment, friction. And for the one who is initiating the change, frustration over negative attitudes. After all, it’s hard to stay positive and excited about something when negativity and pushback surround you!

With two very different perspectives about change, there are two roles each camp must assume to make change a positive experience for everyone.

Next, the one who is facilitating the change has to communicate the details – the steps involved and the “why’s”

For those who initiate change, the best way to offset resistance is first to understand why things have been done the way they’ve been done. Ask questions. Then ask some more. After all, before cleaning the house, you have to assess the situation. In some cases, there are very valid reasons as to why a seemingly antiquated process is still utilized, but understanding the existing structure is the first step in implementing change.

On the other hand, there are the naysayers. They have an active role in the process, too. While change may not be something that’s welcome, trying to understand the why is half the battle. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. But ask the right person. Asking peers and subordinates will not yield a productive response. Financial guru Dave Ramsey refers to this as “complaining up.” You should always take your concerns to the people who can address your questions rather than gossip about them to the people who can’t do anything about them.

An open mind and willingness to try are half the battle.

Negative thoughts will take root and fester, but if a person is willing to try, it makes the process far more enjoyable for everyone.

The attitude of “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” doesn’t work as well anymore. We live in a world of technology, and we have to adapt to keep up the pace. Granted, not every change is going to improve things, but it’s at least worth the try. And “try,” as a verb, works far better with a positive attitude.

Most of all, before resisting change, come to the table with a solution. Change isn’t usually done arbitrarily but is done to make things better for the whole. However, if the change isn’t working, and it’s not for lack of trying, at least bring a solution to the table. The proposed change may not be the answer, but a solution can usually be found in the middle with a little bit of creative thinking. And besides… who doesn’t love a great brainstorming session?

Change is difficult for most people. Even for the movers and shakers who seek to bring change. But with open communication, lots of questions, and a genuine willingness to try, the dynamic of change doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating.

Avocado Toast

As much as I love guacamole and anything that involves avocado, I was hesitant to give avocado toast a try—it just seemed like a strange combination. However, having several avocados on the kitchen counter rapidly approaching the past-ripe phase made me decide to go for it. I’m so glad I did! It has become one of my go-to breakfast / brunch dishes. It is delicious and keeps me full for hours. Below is a basic recipe, but feel free to add additional toppings to your toast like a fried egg, arugula, seasoning(s), fruit or cheese. Be mindful of the calories involved with these additional toppings… adding several of these could easily make your breakfast have as many calories as you need for the entire day.

AVOCADO TOAST (SERVES 1)

INGREDIENTS • 2 slices Ezekiel bread (flourless, but not gluten free, bread made from sprouted grains) • 2 slices bacon • 1 small avocado (or ½ of a large avocado)** DIRECTIONS • Toast Ezekiel bread, cook bacon*, slice avocado.

Spread avocado on your toast and layer bacon plus any additional toppings you prefer.

• Serve with fruit and a large cup of coffee and enjoy!

* The original Makin’ Bacon Rack is a lifesaver! It can be purchased on Amazon for $12 and makes cooking bacon in the microwave easy with no mess! ** When choosing avocados, squeeze to make sure they are not too firm but not too soft. The skin should be almost black. Peel back the cap at the top of the avocado, if it is green, it is ripe. If it is brown or black, the avocado is overripe.

TIPS FOR KEEPING AVOCADOS FRESH LONGER:

• Store them in the fridge.

• If you have only half an avocado left over, leave the pit in, wrap tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge.

• Place in an airtight container in the fridge with chunks of onion.

• Immerse in water (to eliminate contact with air) for up to 48 hours.

BACK TO SCHOOL

The school year will soon begin.

Parents are purchasing all the right supplies, attending open house for their children, possibly taking care of pediatrician visits before the school schedule becomes too hectic. However, are we remembering one of the most important items in readying their children for the coming school year? Parents want their children to achieve at the highest level.

In order to do this, a child needs many abilities – SIGHT being one of the most important. It has been estimated that 80% of the learning a child does occurs through his or her eyes. Vision is in constant use in the classroom and in sports. If a child has poor vision, academic and sporting activities can suffer.

When vision is impaired, children tend to not pay attention in class due to not being able to see the whiteboard, and they may not complete homework due to fatigue or blurring of the pages. This contributes to poor participation, poor grades, and added stress for the child and the parent.

We often think that 20/20 vision is all there is to an eye examination.

Many children will pass vision screenings at their pediatrician’s office, thus hiding underlying vision problems. There are many other visual skills beyond seeing clearly that team together for great vision. Every child needs to have:

• VISUAL ACUITY – Ability to see clearly near (reading a book),

intermediate (computer screen), and distance (reading the whiteboard).

As mentioned above, a vision screening at your pediatrician’s office is not sufficient for a child.

• EYE FOCUSING – Ability to focus quickly when viewing objects at different distances in rapid succession (reading a book to focusing on the whiteboard).

• EYE TRACKING – Ability to keep the eyes on target when looking from across a printed page or following a thrown ball.

• EYE TEAMING – Ability to coordinate and use both eyes together.

• EYE-HAND COORDINATION – Ability to use the visual information and direct the hands (drawing a picture or throwing a ball).

Many studies show that while doing near work, such as reading or playing on the iPad/digital device, dry eye can increase. This causes eye strain, as well as contributing to dry eye disease. It is imperative that children (and adults) take breaks while using their eyes. A good rule is every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds, and look 20 feet away. This helps to relax the eyes.

If any one skill is missing, the child can suffer from eye fatigue, headaches, poor grades, and even be misdiagnosed with learning disabilities.

Some signs that may indicate a child is experiencing visual problems include, but are not limited to, rubbing the eyes, excessive blinking of the eyes, short attention span, hyperactivity, headaches, holding reading materials too close to face, an eye turning in or out, complaints of double vision and many more.

To be sure your child has all the “supplies” for the new school year, call your eye care provider and schedule that pre-school eye examination.

Stories of Self-Discovery Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Standing in the doorway to a room full of strangers, my heart pounding, the thought repeatedly going through my head, “Why did I agree to do this?” and then, it’s time…..to be funny. I’ve had bad dreams about that exact thing happening most of my life, and a few years ago it happened.

Now, I am not a funny person. The thought of having to make people laugh makes me physically uncomfortable, but somehow I had been convinced to be a guest performer for an improv troupe.

5. BE AROUND LIKEMINDED PEOPLE.

The logical question would be, then why do it? Why put yourself in a situation that you know you have had nightmares about?

The answer comes in some advice I once received from a mentor. Do one thing a week that makes you uncomfortable. By pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, you grow as a person.

You will improve. Take the time to recognize it. You put in the effort, and it is time to receive the reward.

Now that seems simple in theory, but when you are faced with the butterflies in your stomach and the overwhelming urge to get sick, you start to wonder if it’s worth it. Do I want to grow or do I want to settle for who I currently am? I wasn’t convinced that doing something that pushes my boundaries would make me grow until he put it more directly. He said, “You are either growing or dying, choose your path.” Put that way, I certainly wasn’t interested in “dying,” as he put it. Now, he didn’t mean literally dying, but metaphorically dying, or being stagnant.

So when I was asked to be a guest performer for the improv troupe where they wanted me to do the opening monologue by myself, I agreed. I was literally living one of my nightmares. But I wanted to grow and become outstanding, so I needed to learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable.

OK great, I am going to be uncomfortable a lot in life. Sounds like fun, right? To me, it didn’t until I read some advice from a former Green Beret, Jason Van Camp, as to how he was able to get through Beret training.

Having people around that embrace what you are trying to accomplish is like having your own cheerleading squad.

It is necessary for the wins and even more so when you have the losses.

6. RECOGNIZE YOUR IMPROVEMENTS.

7. FINALLY, “RINSE AND REPEAT.”

1. START.

There is no way around it – when you start something, it always sucks, whether it is a diet or learning something new. The most important thing to do, though is to just start!

2. DON’T QUIT.

There were so many times I thought, “No one will care if I just quit.” But I knew that if I did, I would know, and I am by far my hardest critic.

3. PUSH YOURSELF PAST YOUR COMFORT ZONE.

There will come a time when you are standing in the “doorway” scared to walk through, but you must find a way to push yourself through it.

4. EMBRACE “THE SUCK.”

Let’s face it. It will. You might get embarrassed. You might fail. You might think, “I should have done this differently.” Don’t allow those thoughts to enter your head. Instead, laugh.

Embrace “the suck.” It has a purpose.

You might fail. You might not be perfect at whatever you are trying to do. That’s OK. Don’t dwell on it. We tell our kids when they are learning to ride a bike that it’s OK to fall – just get back on and try again.

Now, I’m not saying that if you follow those steps, you will magically feel better. Nope. But what I am saying is that it will help. If you continue to push yourself, you will start to notice a pattern. You will start to realize that the uncomfortable feeling doesn’t mean anything more than your body acknowledging something new, and every time it will get a bit easier.

So I stepped through the doorway that day into a room full of strangers and made them laugh. That night when I was alone, I thought about what I had accomplished. The standing ovation made me feel good, but knowing I pushed myself outside my comfort zone made me feel amazing.

So get comfortable being uncomfortable, because you are either growing or dying.

Waking up and getting dressed for the day may seem like just another part of the morning ritual, like brushing your teeth, but for many women, it can be a struggle. Finding an outfit that makes them feel good about themselves and doesn’t bring on a wave of negative thoughts about their bodies can be a challenge some days. Does this sound familiar?

According to a 2011 survey done by Glamour magazine, “On average, women have 13 negative body thoughts daily—nearly one for every waking hour.” With so much pressure from the world to look a certain way, it’s no surprise that women face trials in building a strong positive body image and having confidence in themselves. A terrific way you can bypass unrealistic and unfair expectations we sometimes put on ourselves is to create a personal style that embraces your body type.

PAY ATTENTION TO WHEN YOU FEEL YOUR BEST

Everyone has that one power outfit in their closet that no matter when they wear it, they almost feel like someone else. Maybe it’s a little black dress that makes them look their slimmest or a floral blouse and boyfriend jeans that makes them feel fashionable and trendy. The problem here is that too often that one outfit doesn’t help shape their shopping habits. Instead, they spend time and money on pieces that they may like enough, or that fits their lifestyle needs but doesn’t inspire them or give them that added boost of confidence.

When you are shopping for new pieces or simply rifling through your closet, be sure to think about what kinds of styles tend to make you feel the best about yourself. If you notice that when you are in a dress, you feel more feminine and empowered, then start wearing more dresses! If you feel your prettiest in a certain color or silhouette, then take note of that. Those are the inspiration pieces you want to invest in for your wardrobe!

PLAY UP YOUR FAVORITE FEATURES

It’s far too easy to pick yourself apart sometimes than it is to exhibit self-love and admire your best assets. One way to make that shift is by focusing more on the things you do like about yourself when thinking about your style. Do you appreciate your strong legs as a runner? Shorts and knee-length dresses should be staples in your wardrobe. Have you often been told you have gorgeous eyes?

FLATTER YOUR SHAPE, DON’T HIDE IT

How many times throughout the week are spent adjusting a shirt that feels a little snug around the midsection or pulling at baggy pants that seem to never sit where you want them? These distractions in your wardrobe make you constantly aware of your clothing and your body and add an extra dose of insecurity into your day. Quite frankly, nobody needs that!

Instead of spending time hiding or camouflaging certain body parts, create looks that flatter your body shape. If you are tall and slender, add feminine details like peplums, ruffles, and pleating to add curves in your silhouette. If you are pear-shaped, lean towards garments that feel comfortable in your hips and thighs but show off your waistline.

Everyone knows that women’s bodies come in all different shapes and sizes. Embracing your shape and dressing to flatter it can add so much comfort and confidence to your life.

REMEMBER: THERE ARE NO RULES

What works for her may not work for you. Everyone has a unique style and looks that work for them and make them feel their best. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Celebrating 37 years in business early this September, Fraleigh’s Boutique is both a tradition and a treasure in Clemmons, NC. Co-owners Donna Merriman and her mother, Mary Francis Bingham, launched the business in 1981, and after working together on a daily basis for all these years, the two are even better friends than ever!

THE HARDEST WORK YOU’LL EVER LOVE!

Imagine with me for a moment.

Come on; it will only take a minute.

Imagine that you arrive at work tomorrow to find your co-worker in deep distress. She just received a call that her mom suffered a stroke and is being rushed to the hospital.

This distraught colleague is inconsolable. Your heart hurts for her. You urge her to get to the hospital. You even offer to cover for her. But, she decides to diligently finish her deadlines for the day, then race to her mom’s side right after work.

You pray persistently for your co-worker throughout the night and return early to the office for updates. When she arrives, though, she explains that some pressing matters sidetracked her last evening. She adamantly insists that tonight she must see her mom.

The next morning, with a little less urgency, you check on your friend. She laments that the whole ordeal has stressed her to the max. In fact, the escalating exhaustion forced her to collapse in the bed right after work. She assures everyone that tonight is the night she will get to the hospital.

After a few days, neither this woman’s compelling words nor her convincing cries have any power to persuade you that “mama” is a priority to her. You become a bit numb to her “desperation.” What you see exposes the insincerity of what she says.

Wouldn’t this get under your skin? Admit it. It kind of makes your blood boil! The mama in you wants to get up in her face and set things straight.

But whoa there, Sally! Pause it for just a second.

How many times have we communicated priorities to our children, yet allowed our actions to completely undermine the truth we speak?

Take a moment to let that sink in.

Look, folks, children don’t know what you think. They don’t even care how you feel. They are unfazed by your intentions. None of that matters unless you say it and they see it.

If the “saying” and the “seeing” are not married, our words ring hollow, and our living falls flat.

If I tell my children it is worthwhile to help those who cannot help themselves, but they never see me go out of my way to help others, my words mock me.

If I try to convince my kids that prayer is important, but they never see me pray, no matter how persuasively I convey this truth, they are not buying it.

Our kids may not listen well, but they mimic masterfully.

Witnessing us emulate what we say produces real impact. When we take the next step and invite our kids to participate alongside us, the priority becomes exponentially more powerful. Truth gets caught, rather than merely taught. It makes its home so deeply in their souls that, over time, it becomes their “operating system’s” default setting. The priority settles into their hard drive to stay.

Children are amazing imitators. So why not show them something absolutely amazing to imitate?

Parenting is not for wimps. It’s hard work. In fact, it is the hardest work we will ever love. The work of walking our talk pays great dividends as our children emulate it in themselves! We write on the lives of our generations, not with a pencil or disappearing ink, but with permanent marker. God has put it in our hands, Parents. As that canvas of our generations stretches across the days and years, may we love the marks we make!

Who doesn’t love a good inspirational quote? Whether you’re in the waiting room at the doctor’s office or scrolling through social media on your phone, words of wisdom seem to greet you. Every so often a quote or phrase will gain traction and stand out from the crowd for a year or so. In this case, you may have become familiar with the popular “Bloom Where You Are Planted” phrase. Printed on fitness water bottles, scripted on shabby chic wood signs, or posted as a graphic on your best friend’s Facebook page, it seems this quote is here to stay.

So what does it mean?

BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED...OR DON’T

The popular phrase is meant to bring both encouragement and motivation to make the best of every situation so that you don’t let it stop you from growing. The mindset behind it is to look at the cards you’ve been dealt that you don’t have the power to change, and be grateful and choose to excel, despite it all. This truly is great advice for anyone, especially the “Negative Nancy” types that need that reminder even more often.

But ask yourself, “What if I don’t want to bloom where I’m planted in this phase of my life?” What if you could bloom bigger and brighter by going after what and where you want to be, rather than simply enduring your present situation?

RECOGNIZE WHEN YOU’RE NOT GETTING ENOUGH SUNLIGHT AND WATER

You can show gratitude all day for the life you’ve been given while still recognizing there is room for improvement. Every flower and vegetable in the garden deserves to grow to its full potential, and it can’t do that without a few resources. When you experience seasons of restlessness, sadness, scarcity, or negativity, check to see the last time you felt you were getting what you needed out of your life. When you take inventory of your lifestyle and recognize the areas that are lacking, it’s ok to give yourself permission to go after those things.

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO MOVE TO A NEW GARDEN

There will always be times when your surroundings are either helping you grow or stunting that growth. Just because you are planted there now, does not mean that’s where you have to stay. That “garden” might be the place you live, a stressful work environment, an unhealthy friend circle, a toxic relationship or several other things. Change can be difficult, but it’s incredible how much lighter your load can feel when you push yourself out of the surroundings that were holding you back from your greatest happiness.

FIND POWER IN THE WEEDS AND DON’T STOP GROWING

One of the most important things to remember is the power you have to change your circumstances. Through complacency, disappointment, grief, limitation, heartache, frustration and more, you have that power. Hold on to the encouragement from the popular inspirational quote, but never stop giving yourself permission to set changes in motion that will allow you to not only bloom, but grow to become the tallest, brightest sunflower in the field.

The Beauty of Non-Surgical Options!

Exquisite in its atmosphere and picturesque views, Ryan’s Restaurant has carved a name for themselves – from exemplary service to culinary decadence of the highest caliber. So when I was asked to review Ryan’s Restaurant for this issue of Forsyth Woman, I did what any restaurant reviewer would do – I jumped up and down, and clapped my hands in giddy delight. Because I knew I was in for a treat.

And boy, was I right.

I have so much to cover. A five-course meal takes time, and there are so many amazing meals to describe. We’ll start at the beginning. Appetizers! As the name implies, CLASSIC OYSTERS ROCKEFELLER just sounds high-caliber. The oysters are roasted in their shells and topped with spinach and a rich, creamy hollandaise sauce. Decadent.

We also sampled the LOBSTER CAKES. Full of fresh lobster that has been breaded, the lobster cakes are served with a delicious tomato saffron aioli. A seafood lover’s dream come true!

I’ve never met a cheese I didn’t love, and Ryan’s Restaurant offers a TOASTED PHYLLO WRAPPED BRIE that is warm, gooey, delicious goodness – perfectly paired with fresh berries, raspberry puree, orange

blossom reduction, and local cloister honey.

Served with fresh crackers, it’s an appetizer designed to share, but no promises that there won’t be a fight over the last bite!

We also tried the SHE CRAB SOUP. Amazingly creamy, and full of lump crab, this is the kind of she crab soup you dream about when you think of visiting the ocean. Incredible.

One of the greatest culinary combinations is a CAPRESE SALAD, and at Ryan’s Restaurant, they’ve taken this humble, albeit delicious salad, to a new level. Heirloom cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella are topped with almond pesto and a tart balsamic reduction. It’s a mouthful of flavors that blend into pure heaven-on-a-plate.

It never ceases to amaze me how creative chefs can take a simple salad and make it something so sophisticated. The first one we tried was a traditional ICEBERG WEDGE. You simply can’t go wrong with this traditional favorite, but instead of the traditional blue cheese, the Ryan’s version is served with gorgonzola. It made for a delicious change!

You’d think we’d be content with the amazing appetizers we were served, but food envy is a real thing. When we saw our neighbors enjoying their COLOSSAL LUMP CRAB MEAT, we had to sample it for ourselves. This crab was both succulent and scrumptious. Not remotely fishy, it’s the best crab we ever tasted!

The RYAN’S SIGNATURE SALAD offered a traditional salad mix tossed with Ryan’s signature dressing. Fresh and with a perfect balance of greens and toppings, this salad is generous in both size and flavor.

I have to take a quick minute to pause and introduce our readers to our server for the evening, James. James was both knowledgeable and entertaining. He kept our group laughing and made sure every need was met at our table. His attention to detail made the meal extra-extraordinary.

But getting back to the food at hand, no one (and I mean NO ONE) makes a better FRENCH ONION SOUP than Ryan’s Restaurant.

And I love French onion soup. It’s probably my favorite kind and never have I had it so flavorful and rich.

If you like a little kick, you’ll love the ARUGULA SALAD. Candied chipotle bacon adds an unexpected bite of spice that works beautifully with the other flavors. Served with a roasted red pepper vinaigrette, this is a salad that says, “Hello!”

But my favorite of the salads we tried was THE PIEDMONT SALAD. Hydroponic Bibb lettuce is topped with ricotta salata, fresh strawberries, and a tangy balsamic vinaigrette. This is the kind of sweet salad that feels almost like eating dessert. Yum! If you can believe it – we actually had room for entrees. Okay, maybe not a lot of room, but we came hungry and determined

to make the most of this awesome experience. First up: CHILEAN SEA BASS. If you love fresh seafood, this is a meal not to be missed. This rich, meaty fish is flavored with a sweet pineapple salsa and balsamic reduction and served over a bed of citrus basil basmati. It’s a burst of flavor in every bite!

Our other seafood entrée was the PAN SEARED SALMON. This was a hearty and generous portion of salmon that was perfectly cooked and served over orange peel pearl couscous. It was topped with hericot verts, sauce vierge, and a wonderful spinach pesto. It was amazing.

But as any Winston-Salem native knows, Ryan’s is known for their steaks. We were given the opportunity to try two.

The first was an incredible Steak Au Poivre which must be French for “really awesome steak with the most amazing cognac cream sauce.” In all seriousness, the steak was so tender, it could be cut with a fork. My hats off to the chef for this one. Exceptional.

Our last entrée can best be described as “nom nom nom…” The PRIME RIBEYE was cooked to perfection and would literally melt in your mouth. We couldn’t get enough of this steak. It was a prime (literally) cut of meat in the hands of a culinary staff who appreciates a wellcooked steak. Correction – a perfectlycooked steak.

With our entrees, we sampled Ryan’s TRUFFLE POMME FRITTES. These string fries weren’t greasy but were light, and a step above the common French fry. We also sampled the SPICED COLLARD GREENS. I’ve only started eating collard greens in the last few years, and if you’re not a fan, this is the dish to turn you into one. I loved the burst of flavor that came from this Southern favorite. Our last side dish was the SAUTÉED SPINACH. We must have been in the mood for green vegetables, but don’t let two greens fool you. These were very different in both flavor and texture. The magic touch of the chef coupled with perfect seasonings enhanced the flavor of this super food!

You know, when I finished my meal and the desserts I’m about to describe, I sent a text to my health coach and told her I went way off plan, but I had no regrets. And as I re-live this meal as I write it, I’m grateful that words don’t have calories. But again, no regrets. We sampled four incredible desserts starting with RYAN’S PECAN PIE. Whether you pronounce it PEE-can or peeKAHN, pronounce this one fabulous. Your Southern grandma would surrender her recipe and beg for this one. Unbelievable.

We also tried VANILLA BEAN CRÈME BRULEE. Friends, despite all we ate that night, we about had a spoon war over the crème brulee. Creamy. Perfectly burnt sugar top.

Don’t order this expecting to share. Just let everyone get their own, so you can end the meal on speaking terms.

Don’t let the menu item, “ICE CREAM,” fool you. This generous scoop of vanilla ice cream was served in a caramel pecan shell and drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce. This isn’t a basic bowl of ice cream. Ryan’s has made it an art form.

Our last dessert for the evening was a FROZEN BANANAS FOSTER CARAMEL PIE. Y’all, there are so many good things in that name.

Bananas Foster – awesome. Caramel – yes, please. Pie – I love pie. Put it all together and wowza! Incredible.

Believe it or not, we actually walked out of the restaurant and didn’t need the wheelbarrow I was sure they had tucked away in the back room for emergencies. But I tell you – I woke up the next morning wondering if I’d ever be hungry again.

Ryan’s Restaurant has been a favorite for decades with good reason. If you haven’t been lately – don’t wait for just a special occasion. Sometimes random Tuesdays deserve a special meal. Go. You won’t regret it. And make sure to tell them that Rosey sent ya!

Like many of the younger professionals throughout our community, I am classified as a Millennial. I was first introduced to investing by my parents, who happen to be a part of the Baby Boomer generation. Like many Baby Boomers, they believe in the time value of money and making their hard-earned dollars work for them. My parents even helped me establish a Roth IRA when I turned 18 years old. I consider myself very privileged to have had them instill their opinion of the importance of investing in me as a teenager.

Their opinions had such a profound impact on me, I decided to major in finance at East Carolina University and make it a personal goal to become a successful financial services professional. Since entering the financial services industry, I have not only made it my goal to provide investment services to our community, but also to assist my fellow peer group with their investment goals and questions. I consider it a very rewarding part of my career to have the opportunity to serve my demographic. For the Millennials who are considering investing a portion of their earnings, it can be confusing. Where to start? What questions to ask? I have listed some considerations for my fellow Millennials to think about when it comes to getting started; 1.) Write down your short-term and longer-term goals. Do you want to pay down your student debt? Do you want to buy a home in the next few years? How much do you want in your emergency fund?

Writing down what I want to accomplish has always helped me become more organized with my finances.

2.) Do you have a budget? In my experience, knowing what your discretionary income is can be a very important consideration when it comes to investing your money.

3.) Make a conscious effort to understand what benefits your employer offers. Many people joining the workforce for the first time get started with investing by joining their employer’s retirement plan. If your employer not only offers a plan, but also offers a matching contribution, strongly consider putting in at least the minimum percentage your employer is willing to match.

4.) Consider what kind of dollars you are contributing to the retirement plan. Some employer retirement plans will allow Pre-Tax, After-Tax and/or Roth dollar contributions.

5.) If you are a self-employed Millennial, congratulations! I applaud you for taking the step to become a business owner.

Secondly, consider speaking with a Financial Services Professional and your Tax Professional about starting a retirement plan. As a business owner, you have options such as a SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA that may be appropriate for you, and can help you start saving for your financial future.

6.) Diversify. Even though you may be younger, not having all your funds in one stock/ bond/ mutual fund can help mitigate some of your risk when it comes to investing.

7.) If you are considering working with a Financial Services Professional, or if you already work with one, ask them how they are compensated.

Like many decisions, investing your money is one that should take many factors into consideration. No matter what age you are, I feel there is no one-size-fits-all investment solution. Millennials looking to invest or learn more about investing can start by taking into consideration their personal goals and by having a conversation with a financial services professional.

There is no guarantee that a diversified portfolio will enhance overall returns or outperform a nondiversified portfolio. Diversification does not protect against market risk.

To help ease the change, Mellie & Emilia, an urban boutique in Winston-Salem, is hosting an exciting Pre-Fall event on Friday, August 24th from 11 am – 6 pm and Saturday, August 25th from 10 am – 4 am.

“For our Pre-Fall event, there’s going to be food and drinks, door prizes, and specials. On Saturday, we’ll also have multiple vendors showing off their latest lines,” said owner Courtney Myers. “It will definitely be a fun-filled weekend. I love any reason to celebrate, whether it be a milestone, anniversary, or big event.

This time of the year always seems to sneak up on you, so why not celebrate it?”

Courtney has invited top of the line vendors, who are regularly sold at the boutique, to the event. These vendors include Peppertrain, Sylvia Benson, and Narrowlines. Also, all of the new fall tops, pants, denim, dresses, sweaters, and sweatshirts are going to be at the boutique by the time of the celebration.

“I love fall and all of the clothes for the fall weather. Back in February, I was in New York City and ordered pieces for this year. By the time the event gets here, the fall items are going to be on the floor. So this is also going to be the perfect time to stock up on clothes for school. After all, pre-fall is a big time for shopping,” said Courtney.

Mellie & Emilia has something for women of all ages that includes pieces and accessories to put together an outfit from head to toe. According to Courtney, the boutique’s clientele includes moms shopping for their daughters and themselves, older women, and students on the search for the perfect school look.

Lastly, the Pre-Fall event ties into Mellie & Emilia’s mission of giving back to their community.

“For the Pre-Fall weekend, if you bring in two school items, you get 20% off one full priced item; three items are 30% off one full

priced item; four items are 40% off one full priced item; and five items for 50% off one full priced item,” explained Courtney.

The festivities for pre-fall and the end of summer mirror the mission of Mellie & Emilia who always puts their customers first and gives them a personalized experience. Courtney strives to build relationships with her customers and encourages them to take their time and enjoy shopping.

To the aspiring, anxious, yet fiercely courageous travel bunny, who has long dreamed of breaking out solo and taking on the world alone, here is why solo traveling is beneficial to your well-being!

MORE FREEDOM.

Although traveling with family and friends is enjoyable, sometimes you may yearn to branch out and roll your own way. When a group travels together, there may be a certain time for everyone to wake up, eat breakfast, do an excursion, and eat dinner. But when traveling alone, there is no certain schedule to follow, and you get to decide what you want to do and when you want to do it. Although being around loved ones is beautiful, there are times when you needs to take a break from life and enjoy your own company. Believe it or not, being alone is needed for our survival because it can be therapeutic. Being alone gives you time to simmer into your thoughts and reflect on your life and do some soul-searching. What do you enjoy doing when you are alone?

Whatever it is, you can do it to the max when you travel solo. This means you have ample time to read, write, meditate, take walks, and pick up some new hobbies. Becoming friends with yourself is necessary because nobody knows you better than yourself and no one will take care of you the way you do.

Saluting Women Veterans

Sunday, June 10, 2018, was designated as a special tribute/ salute day for women veterans of all branches of the armed services. Hosted by Hospice & Palliative CareCenter (soon to be known as Trellis Supportive Care) and their team of sponsors and volunteers, this special event was held in the Benton Convention Center. Following a reception hour, veterans entered under crossed swords with a photo opportunity and a personal thank you from one of the hosts. Local news anchor, Kenny Beck from WXII 12 News, welcomed the veterans and guests. Leslie Nicole Smith, US Army Captain, Retired, and now a member of the Gary Sinise Foundation, was one of the speakers. Major General Jeanette Edmunds, US Army, Retired, Chairwoman, Board of Directors, Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, presented the keynote address. In addition, the United States and North Carolina Departments of Veterans Affairs hosted informational tables in the reception area.

According to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter’s press release, “More than 300 women veterans attended ranging in age from mid-20s to a 100-year-old WWII woman veteran. Total attendance was estimated at over 800.”

“Our goal is to honor our women veterans,” said Linda Darden, HPCC President & CEO. “This event is highly visible within the general community and

especially the military and veteran population. There are nearly 800,000 veterans in North Carolina, with over 70,000 of them women. We want our veteran friends to feel appreciated and honored for their service, and we want them to know where to turn for support as they face challenges at the end of life.”

SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PROGRAM INCLUDED:

Members of Rolling Thunder NC Chapter 2 presented the Missing Man Table in honor of those missing in action. This tribute is a visual reminder that many men and women have not yet returned home. As the narrator explained, each item on the table is a specific symbol – the overturned goblets noting a person not present, a single rose, a red ribbon, and the chairs draped with MIA flags.

As each branch of service was announced, a Rolling Thunder member presented the dress cap from that branch and stood behind a chair. The caps were placed at each setting, and the table remained empty as a silent reminder of those missing in action/POWs. Key highlights from Major General Jeanette Edmunds, US Army, Retired, included the fact that women first served in the military before they were given the right to vote. She shared that the first enlisted woman to retire from

the USMC is buried at Arlington.

There are over 2.5 million women veterans. Currently, 17 percent of the U.S. armed forces are women. She noted that there are millions of stories to be shared and that, “Every story deserves to be told.” She stressed the importance of registering service via The Register, “a computerized, interactive database that records for history the name, service information, photos, and memorable experiences from each registered woman veteran.”

“The veteran’s appreciation event meant so much to my family,” Melissa Reavis, an eight-year U.S. Army veteran who served in Desert Storm/Desert Shield as a Sergeant in a petroleum supply unit shared. “It was a chance to uncover new information, meet old friends, gain some new friends and connect with the veterans and community at large in North Carolina. I felt a calming of my heart and soul to be among these women and their loved ones. There’s a deep and powerful understanding of our culture that is just indescribable!

There are days of longing for this connection when we are apart from our sisters and brothers coming together in celebration, remembrance, and mourning of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice gives deeper meaning to our connection of veteran ‘family.’ Hospice’s effort of hosting this event is tremendously appreciated! Thank you to all who made this event so special!”

Lora Songster Overcoming Lyme Disease

Morning commuters have been starting their days for almost 32 years listening to Lora Songster on WMAG from 5:30-10 am. Days begin early for Lora, so feeling tired and not getting enough sleep has become a way of life. When Lora started feeling exceptionally tired in January 2017, visits to her physician came back with advice many women who are in their 50s hear: get more sleep and eat healthy. Lora knew that it was more than hormonal issues, lack of sleep or diet, though; in her gut, she felt something was wrong.

“Because of the hours that I work, I’m always tired, but I had come to the place where it took everything out of me to get out of bed, go to work and then I just wanted to come home and go to sleep. I was doing what I needed to do, but nothing outside of what had to get done, because I didn’t have the energy. Everything felt off; my brain felt foggy, issues with depression and anxiety felt heightened; I felt like a hypochondriac and that I was going crazy. During the time I felt really bad, a lot fell on my husband, and he’s was great about helping me. In one year, I had gained 30 pounds, and when you are in the public eye at local events, people notice a change in your appearance. One day on location, a woman said to me, ‘You’ve gained a lot of weight.’ That day I was just happy to be out and meeting people, but that comment was hurtful to me. None of us knows what another is going through in their life and words have an effect that we may not understand at the time,” Lora recalled. While having lunch one day with a friend, Lora opened up about how she was feeling, and her friend suggested that Lora contact Dr. Bruce Lantelme of Robinhood Integrative Health in Winston-Salem, NC. Since Lora wanted to know what was going on with her body and how to get back to ‘normal,’ she made the call.

“Every day in my car, I listen to a daily devotional, and the day of my appointment with Dr. Lantelme, the verse for the day was Proverbs 17:22, ‘A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.’ I thought maybe if I changed my mindset I would feel better. Dr. Lantelme took a complete history of my health, as well as any

problems that run in my family and did a physical. With my symptoms, Dr. Lantelme decided to test me for Lyme disease. Being a city girl, I didn’t know much about ticks or Lyme disease.

He asked me at the end of our time if he could pray with me. Two different parts of my life, my Christian faith, and my health seemed to collide. As I was leaving the office, setting up my next appointment, I saw on the wall of the office, in needlepoint, Proverbs 17:22. I knew that I was at the right place to get the help I needed…no coincidence that I’d heard that verse earlier in the day,” Lora said. The diagnosis indeed was Lyme disease, a tick-borne bacterial illness that affects the entire body on a cellular level, but when caught early can be treated with antibiotics and flushed out of the body quickly. However, Lora’s Lyme disease was fairly advanced, so her treatment would require not only antibiotics and other prescriptions, but natural supplements too.

“The first few months were the roughest. Antibiotics put my body into shock because of everything I was putting in it. There are various protocols that, when working, help you feel better, but as the treatment progresses, the regimens and the way you approach the disease changes, too. I’d been slowly feeling better until this past April, and I’m feeling lousy right now. I’ve accepted that I am not going to feel good for a long time; I’m a goer and a doer, so sitting on the sofa, resting, is frustrating. I am forcing myself to walk my dog and stay active. But because of my diagnosis from Dr. Lantelme, I have hope for the first time in a long time,” commented Lora. Because she didn’t want to be seen as not being able to carry on with her job responsibilities, Lora kept her problems and diagnosis to herself, until recently.

“We all struggle with something, and I never wanted anyone to think my professional life was going to change; I wasn’t going to let anyone down. I wanted to fulfill all my roles, from my morning radio show to my voiceovers, but when I shared all I’d been going through, everyone has been so supportive. Lyme disease is hard for people to understand, but I know better days are ahead and sharing my story can only help others,” Lora said.

“One Man’s Junk Is Another Man’s Treasure.”

I have no idea who said this quote but I do know there is truth in it. Actually, when I think about it, I have applied it more than once when doing an Interior Redesign. Items my clients have sent to the attic, garage or basement have found new life when reclaimed or repurposed in a room. I love shopping consignment and thrift stores for me and for my clients. I have found some really good deals on items clients need to complete their decorating projects. I guess I enjoy “the hunt,” but most of all I do love that the consignment stores have a different selection every time I go in, and I love the uniqueness of each item.

Just recently I have been shopping with a client who needs several pieces of furniture for her new home. She plans to buy a few new pieces, but hopefully her budget can be stretched by shopping consignment stores in our area. We were thrilled to find 4 parsons chairs for her dining room for $99. Another client needed items to decorate a metal shelf and I found several small items that worked for a fraction of what the items would have cost if purchased new.

Yes, I have bought “one man’s junk” and it has become a personal treasure in my own home. Actually, I have found some of these items are my favorite pieces.

What to look for: • Good quality furniture that can be repurposed, reupholstered or refinished. Make sure it has ‘good bones.’ Fine quality furniture is ageless; buying such items is a great investment, both for use and for resale values.

• Unique art pieces that can be hung on the wall. Even consider buying a picture just for the frame and save lots of dollars when using it to frame your own favorite painting.

• Vintage Fabrics….accessorizing with textiles from the past gives your home’s decor an added layer of personality and interest.

• Architectural elements will add interest and character to your home.

Usually these have been salvaged from old houses.

• China…..odd plates make great wall art.

• The treasures are endless. Have fun shopping!

8 Ways to Change Yourself

(When You Can’t Change the World)

Who among us hasn’t wondered why people don’t just do things our way? Wouldn’t the world be a better place if everyone just adopted our way of thinking? Our process? Our ideas and solutions? As often as people dream about this very concept, unfortunately, there are 7.4 billion people on our planet and therefore, 7.4 billion ideas of what the right way is to do something.

We can’t change others. That’s a simple truth. But there’s one person we can change – ourselves. Not the answer you were hoping for, right? But have no fear. It’s not a bad thing. It’s actually an opportunity to develop and strengthen our personal character. So with that said, how can we change ourselves when we can’t change the world?

1. Stop worrying about what the world can do for you, and start thinking of what you can do for the world. As a whole, we are generally very self-centered, but when we stop thinking inwardly and think outwardly, the coolest thing happens. We grow. When we give, we grow, and by enriching others, we enrich ourselves.

2. Live in the moment. We can’t change yesterday, and there’s no way to predict what tomorrow will bring. Staying focused in the moment will allow you to recognize moments and make memories that you may miss if you’re always looking over your shoulder or trying to see beyond the horizon.

3. Turn the overthinking down from 11. If you’re an over-thinker, you know the vicious cycle overthinking leads to. This kind of ties into “living in the moment,” but a subset of that is to simply be. Don’t try to read into things or analyze what someone else is thinking or feeling.

4. Try to see things from a new perspective. One of the most challenging things to do is to try to understand a perspective we don’t agree with. But oh, goodness – what a nicer place the world would be if we could collectively agree to TRY to understand another’s point of view. It’s a mindset that has to start somewhere, right? Be a trendsetter. Try to understand another point of view.

5. Recognize that there are three sides to every story. His. Hers. And the truth. It’s not that His or Her are lying, but people perceive experiences differently. And from His perspective and Hers, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. When we understand that others have experienced and perceived shared memories differently from us, that’s a good thing! Obviously, when a blatant lie is shoved in there, that’s a different matter. But on the whole, it’s okay if others don’t agree on every detail.

6. George Harrison sang it – It’s Gonna Take Time! A Whole Lotta Precious Time. Few things change overnight, and attitudes definitely don’t. Be patient with others; be patient with yourself.

And give yourself the grace to make changes slowly.

7. Be intentional. No one teaches intentional living better than John Maxwell so if you’re looking to make changes to yourself, his books are a great place to start.

8. Redefine your expectations. A good chunk of our communication issues come from issues with our expectations. You can’t expect others to know what you expect if you don’t tell them. And sometimes, our expectations are too high or unreasonable. When that happens, it’s easier to re-define our own expectations instead of getting frustrated that others fail to measure up.

We can’t change anyone but ourselves. And sure – there are those who believe that they are set in their ways. But a person with resolve and strong determination can do incredible things. Change begins from the inside and, who knows? By making your own personal changes, you may find others rise to the challenge and change as well.

COOLHOUSE CRYOTHERAPY: A “Cool” Place for Natural Wellness and Recovery

Thanks to Coolhouse Cryotherapy in WinstonSalem, this ancient practice uses cold temperatures to help with athletic performance, natural wellness, injury recovery, and pain management. Owners and friends Hartley Hsu and Jon Abbate opened Coolhouse Cryotherapy this past spring after Abbate experienced the benefits of cryotherapy for himself.

“Jon is a local celebrity and played football for Wake Forest University. From there, he went on to play in the NFL for the Houston Texans and California Redwoods. During his football career, Jon went to different doctors, in places such as Los Angeles, and received the newest treatments for his injuries, but nothing really helped the pain and inflammation like cryotherapy did,” Hartley explained.

As the owner of a strength and personal training business, Hartley first met Jon when he personally trained the athlete at Wake Forest University. Quickly a bond developed, and the two began discussing the possibility of bringing cryotherapy to the area.

“He asked me if Winston-Salem had a place that did cryotherapy for people in the community.

While there are pain management clinics, there wasn’t a place that targets the main population,”

said Hartley. “Jon used his experience as a professional athlete and knowledge of how cryotherapy was being done in big cities, such as Atlanta and New York City. I pulled in my experience, helping training clients deal with their chronic pain, and within six months, we started Coolhouse Cryotherapy.”

According to Hartley, cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen vapor that creates a dry air. This dry air is between the range of -90 degrees Celsius to -120 degrees Celsius. Currently, the business offers customers three main services: Whole-Body Cryotherapy, NormaTec, and Localized Cryotherapy. A huge advantage and draw for all of these services? WholeBody and Localized Cryotherapy can be completed in 3 minutes, and NormaTec takes only 30 minutes.

Hartley explained that during Whole-Body Cryotherapy, the client changes into a provided robe, socks, gloves, and boots, and enters a cryosauna, also known as a chamber. Then, they stand and rotate during the three minutes to allow for their body to be exposed to the cold.

For safety measures, a technician stays in the room the entire time. As for NormaTec, this regimen uses boots that give off compressions to help generate a continual blood flow and a massage in a person’s legs, arms, or hips. This technology allows for athletes to recover faster and customers to experience pain relief. Lastly, Hartley described the Localized Cryotherapy as being a way to target a certain pain area. He states people who have headaches, migraines, neck aches, etc. can see excellent results from a spot or area treatment. In addition, Coolhouse Cryotherapy offers facials as part of the localized treatment. These facials can help with inflammation, acne, rosacea, and enhancing a person’s collagen in their face.

“These treatments are great alternatives for people who deal with chronic pain every day. Because of the liquid nitrogen turning into dry gas, the types of cryotherapy aren’t wet and aren’t like ice baths or cold showers. A lot of people will come in during their lunch breaks for a quick treatment and women can even wear their makeup,” said Hartley.

People 14 years and older are welcome to stop by and experience cryotherapy for themselves.

However, for people ages 14 to 18, Hartley and his team need a parent to sign a waiver and accompany the younger client to

their first visit.

“For example, if someone is competing in a triathlon, they could come and have a session to recover between the different events,” Hartley stated. “For others, clients can come in when they aren’t in full pain but feel it coming on.

For example, if someone feels a migraine starting, they can have a localized, spot treatment.”

Looking into the future, Hartley and Jon have big plans. Hartley’s wife, Hannah, discussed adding another location. Also, they hope to organize various events, including freeze parties for sports teams, a girls’ night out, and company outings.

After all, Coolhouse Cryotherapy has already hosted the Wake Forest Men’s Tennis team, while they were playing in the National Championships.

“One night, we were open until midnight and provided treatments for all of the athletes. It was awesome to see how the players noticed how much better they felt after cryotherapy. This type of treatment helps many people manage arthritis, chronic pain, and inflammation.

We have even seen people lessen their pain medicine. If I could do cryotherapy all the time, I would,” added Hartley.

Early, On Time, and Late: A Guide to Being Punctual

There is a common saying about being on time that, “Five minutes early is on time; on time is late; and late is unacceptable.” This quote is a motto for many when it comes to punctuality and time management.

Learning how to be on time is a valuable skill for people of all ages to know. It comes in handy for important meetings, deadlines, events, etc.

Recently, I came across the article, titled as the quote above, by Brent Beshore on forbes.com. Beshore explains how being late to anything is unacceptable. He notes that a person’s punctuality reflects back on her and that when you are late, you can be considered disrespectful, inconsiderate, overly-busy, and disorganized. While emergencies happen, things occur that we can’t control and sometimes being late is unavoidable, it should never become a habit. You don’t want to become known as “the person who is always late to any event.” If you are that person or have a habit of being the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, who is constantly running because you are late, continue reading the advice below to help you create a new habit of being on time or early!

1. This tip is one I do almost every day. I count time backwards. Start with the time you need to leave the house or be at a certain place, such as work. Then, think about how long it will take you to get ready and complete various tasks. For example, you need to be at work at 7:30 am. So, break it down.

7:30 am – Arrive at work.

7:15 am – 5-minute drive from your home to the office.

7:05 am – Gather the items you need for the day.

6:50 am – Eat breakfast and pack your lunch.

6:15 am – Shower, put on your makeup, and get dressed 6:00 am – Wake up.

By counting time backwards, you are able to determine exactly when you need to wake up or start a task to finish or arrive at a certain time.

Prioritize what is most important when getting ready for anything and always include extra time for the unexpected. In the example

above, you may have noticed the drive to work is only 5 minutes, but 15 minutes is allotted. This extra time is added in case something happens that you can’t control, such as traffic, needing to stop for gas, etc. Also, the extra time will give you more time to relax.

2. Prepare beforehand. Whether it is a meeting, major deadline at work, or a birthday party you are hosting, always try to do most of the prepwork before the event. From experience, I fully understand how this piece of advice will save you stress in the long run. Create a schedule of everything you need to complete and work on it a little at a time.

Think about it in terms of studying for a test. Cramming for a test means you probably aren’t going to do well, and the same thing goes for being on time. Cramming at the last minute for something can cause more headaches than enjoyment.

3. Simplify and organize. This tip works well with #2, preparing beforehand. If you are rushing out the door each morning to get to work on time, lay out what you need the night before. Go ahead and get everything you need for your outfit, make your lunch, and put your work materials into your briefcase before going to bed. That way, when you wake up, you aren’t losing time, trying to gather what you need. Also, have a designated place for everything. Always keep your keys in a basket by the front door or always place your lunchbox in the same spot on the counter. These reserved spots will help you get in the habit of looking for what you need in a certain spot and will give you a sense of reassurance in being prepared. Lastly, organize your week on the weekends. Many people meal prep on Saturday or Sunday, or plan out their activities for the next five days. Create a schedule that works for you. If working day by day on your punctuality helps you be on time, great! If working week by week is best, awesome! Develop a habit that fits you and keep in mind it may take a little bit of time for all the kinks to get worked out.

Being on time and learning how to manage your time can be tough, but it is something everyone needs to be able to do. You just never know what you’ll miss out on when you are late.

Fitness After Vacation: How To Get Back On Track & Making Progress!

You just got back from an amazing vacation full of delicious treats, laid back chill time with family and friends and zero agenda to head to the gym.

Any vacation should be a time of rejuvenation and downtime but what happens when you get back and reality sets in? You know what I am talking about – a few pounds heavier, out of your routine and less motivation to get back on track. Trust me, we have all been there at least once, but I am here to talk about settling back in at home.

So many people get out of routine and spend days, even weeks, trying to get back on track with workouts, nutrition and having the goal-driven mindset. It’s a by-product of most all vacations but I want to give you four tips to get back on track.

1. WRITE OUT YOUR WEEKLY GOALS IN THE CATEGORIES OF MINDSET, FITNESS, AND NUTRITION.

By writing out your goals for the week, you start shifting your mindset back to your specific goals.

Stating weekly goals out loud and writing them down is a way of declaring that it will happen. You are ten times more likely to complete a task if you say it out loud or write it down, so start shifting your mindset as soon as you get home by grabbing some paper and hanging it up where you will see it daily.

2. MEAL PREP AT LEAST THREE DAYS.

Nothing is worse than getting back on a Sunday from vacation, getting so caught up in the laundry and settling back in that you neglect a grocery store visit for the next day. Swing by the grocery store and grab essentials for at least three days of healthy meals. Prep some quick grab containers for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. This ensures you will be prepared for the rough start of your week when reality is setting back in.

3. START MOVING RIGHT AWAY.

Action creates action. I know the last thing I want to do when I get back home from vacation is to start working out. I’m a little bit salty at the idea of getting up for work the next day after a week of sleeping in and taking it easy. I also don’t want to face the reality that it’s over, but such is life, and it must go on. So should you. Do yoga for 10 minutes, go for a walk, play basketball with your kids outside or garden your flowers.

Just start moving in any way you can.

4. TAKE 5 MIN TO REFLECT AND MEDITATE ON YOUR GOALS.

We state out loud our goals and write them down, but there is even more progress to come from visualization. It is the number one tool used by professional athletes when injured or out of the game.

Visualization can provide a clear insight to “being the goal” you want to become. You see it in your mind, you sense it in your body and feel what it would be like to reach your goals. This is crucial to believing you can reach your goals and that you are capable.

Remember, just because you had an amazing vacation doesn’t mean that it is at the expense of your fitness goals. You can get back on track and start reaching your goals in no time!

CAN A STANDING DESK IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH? If you sit at a desk and gaze at a computer for most of an 8-hour workday, then you should read this article. If you sit most of your 8-hour workday but don’t stare at a computer, you, too, should read this article. Why? Because workers who sit most of the day need to be educated on the influence of prolonged sitting on their overall health. Have you heard the claim that, “Sitting is the new smoking”? While there may not be enough research yet to make that a completely true statement, there is enough evidence to support the use of sitstand workstations. I should probably be standing while I type this, but I am at home, and not at my sit-stand workstation, which I requested a few months back.

I requested a change in my workstation, really as an afterthought, as I watched 2-3 of my colleagues switch to a sit-stand desk. I had never thought about it. I was not one of the 40-80% of computer users who complained of workrelated musculoskeletal injuries; my back didn’t hurt; my neck didn’t hurt; my eyes were not dry or my vision blurry. But my right knee did occasionally swell after a hard morning workout, especially on days where I sat at my desk all day. So, I decided to try a sit-stand station for my knee and was happily impressed (and a little surprised) that this simple change helped my knee by performing “interval” sitting and standing throughout the day. No one provided any advice or training on how to successfully use my sit-stand station; I just used a trial and error technique. I would typically stand an hour or two, then sit an hour or two, depending on how much I had to type. My typing errors definitely increased while I stood, which makes sense from a “motor control” perspective. It is more challenging for most to stand and type error-free than to sit and type as accurately, depending on our age. Occasionally, I stood too long, and my back would signal the need for a sitting break. My typing sometimes suffers, but my knee is much happier now at my sit-stand station. But this is all anecdotal.

What does the research say?

Research is starting to catch up with sit-stand workstation sales, which have been increasing, and does support the use of this interval positioning for some health benefits, but not for weight loss, as many of us

would like to hope. Here are some key points from current research regarding standing workstations: • The number of calories burned by standing is only eight more than by sitting (88 vs. 80 cal/hour; walking burns 210/hour as a comparison); walking at lunch would burn more calories than just standing most of the day • Blood sugar rates return to normal after a meal faster on days when the person stands more • Standing vs. sitting can reduce the risk of shoulder and back pain (if scheduled correctly; a person needs to work up to standing long periods, not just start 8 hours of standing one day; the back will thank you later for a graded approach increasing from 30-60 minutes per day) • Excessive sedentary activity (like sitting) has been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity • Sit-stand stations have decreased stress and increased energy levels throughout the workday In summary, there is promising preliminary research that supports the use of sit-stand desks to improve health and potentially increase lifespan. This is not a substitute for physical activity or exercise, and more research is needed to determine the best intervals for sitting and standing at work that improve health without causing back pain or other “overuse” symptoms that result from transitioning too fast from long-term sitting to long-term standing at work. A physical therapist or other trained healthcare provider can offer guidance on the best ergonomic workstation setup and positioning schedule for anyone interested in standing up for health!

When Friends MEAN Well

In the societal warnings of bullying, social media was buzzing around a concept that suggested mean friends are beneficial. Comprising 140 adults at the University of Plymouth, located in England, the evidence claimed that “people who tend to make others experience negative emotions believe the impact of those emotions will be beneficial for them in the long run.” One scenario described a college student deliberately inducing the fear of failing exams to try and get a friend who hadn’t studied to hit the books. Do you believe that people can sometimes be ‘mean’ to you, not because they hate you, or want to hurt you, but because they care for you, and their meanness comes out of selflessness and empathy?

THE FRENEMY

We live in a strange world when the term friendship is defined by a lack of support, and the “harsh, though true, words can sting like needles.” Within all the categories friends, from the best friend or childhood friend, to the work colleague to the acquaintance, a new term defined as both a friend and an enemy has entered into modern vocabulary: the “frenemy.” While this person can attack you on a whim, she can change her personality and, minutes later, display a great deal of compassion and love. It is claimed the frenemy is not easily understood and is not they likely to change.

DEFINING LOYALTY

The definition of friendship can be murky, as social media has given its users the option of labeling everyone with one title: friend. It certainly does not take long until these approved friends can display their true colors and openly voice opinions publicly. Every connection has the chance to teach us something vital about ourselves. This may be from an acquaintance to a lifelong friend.

to have in our circle. And social media also gives us one important power, that of “unfriending” someone. The message of “mean friends” is not of tolerance or acceptance. Loyalty to friends must be reciprocal. And, only “you” can answer the most important question of all. “Does your friend give the same level of unconditional friendship and support that you give?” Too often, having a frenemy in our lives requires the need to let go, and wish the person well. It is more important to be happy than to endure a person who treats others, including you, poorly.

THE “TELL-IT-LIKE-IT-IS” FRIENDS

In each season of life, the type of friend that is needed changes. During the early 20s, groups of friends are effortlessly formed. With changes in life, honesty is essential in discussing the experiences of marriage, employment, home ownership and raising children. Friendship is determined by her willingness to return phone calls, be there at a moment’s notice, and stand by when the ground has shifted! The “tell it like it is” friend becomes important in the circle. She is not a frenemy nor an enemy. She is able to offer personal experience and the outcome through facts. The presentation is not snippy, sarcastic, lacking in compassion, nor mean. The matter of fact friend has learned to diplomatically balance honesty with tactfulness, support with a genuine respect.

This year, a different, yet profound, message was delivered to England and the world. Bishop Michael Curry affirmed, not through research, but belief and experience in the words, “There’s power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. There’s power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. There’s power in love to show us the way to live.” To envelope love and support one another is the way to empowerment! Love or meanness, which one is radical to the nature of a caring friendship?

Understanding Servant Leadership

The term “leader” conjures many ideas to different people, but without question, the most effective form of leadership comes in the form of “servant leadership.” The juxtaposition of “service” and “leadership” in the same breath seems counterintuitive, but the terms really do go hand-in-hand.

Local leadership expert Tracey Buck explained that, “Servant leadership is something anyone can do – it’s not exclusive to managers, directors, or those in positions of authority. It begins in the heart and is rooted in acts of service.

“In our world, it’s easy to take,” Tracey continued. “But being a servant leader is an intentional decision to give.”

Tracey’s voice of authority began over a decade ago when she started teaching professionals how to make more money.

“Through the instructional training process, I found that people were more successful and far more inspired when I shared heartwarming stories that talked about giving to others. What began with one idea, evolved into something much bigger (and better!).

What’s really amazing though, is that when we stop focusing on ‘what’s in it for me,’ we reap greater success and benefits… and that does eventually translate to financial success as well.”

But to get started, Tracey advises that servant leadership begins with gratitude.

“Every morning has to start with a spirit of thankfulness,” said Tracey. “We have to be grateful for the world around us and the blessings we enjoy. While some may find this exercise easier than others, perseverance is key. There is always, always, always something to be thankful for!”

In addition to gratitude, Tracey advises that we look inward. “The only person who you can truly change is yourself,” she said. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t help each other change for the better. It’s easy to blame others and find faults in people, but at the end of the day, our reactions are our own choices. And generally, when we look for the good in every individual, rather than criticizing their faults, special things can happen. I like to encourage others to, ‘Look for the spark in each person they meet.’”

Tracey continued, “The greatest success a leader will ever know is through personal service and a willingness to invest in another person. By doing so, we can change lives.

It’s like throwing a rock into a still pond.

The ripple effect radiates outward, and it starts with a single splash. I can only imagine how much better things would be in this world if more people embraced that truth.”

She speaks from a voice of experience.

“My career is in the Great Clips industry, and a stylist had the courage to approach me and tell me that one day, she wanted my job. A servant leader isn’t intimidated by that kind of admission, because they, too, are looking ahead. I embraced her goal! And within two years, I watched her go from stylist to assistant manager, to store manager, to general manager, and when it was time to move on from my position, she was ready to step into the role. And I couldn’t be more proud of her success than if it were my own! Because in a way, it is my success. There was a spark in her, and through honest feedback and coaching, we created a flame!”

Servant leadership is purposeful goodness and a willingness to look for and nurture the good in others.

It’s a basic faith in humanity and a desire to put others above self. Tracey suggests, “Look at the five closest people in your life. Are they the type of people who are competitive and self-serving? Or are they sincere in their willingness to celebrate another’s success? Are they encouragers? Are they willing to nurture the talents of another person? The simple truth is – the company we keep matters. Servant leaders have to surround themselves with those who are also servant leaders. Otherwise, negativity will infiltrate like a toxic poison.”

Servant leadership includes kindness, even in the middle of difficult situations. “Even when we have to deliver bad news or correct someone,” Tracey said, “it can be – and should be – done in kindness. It’s what takes negative experiences and turns them into positive wins.”

“But the greatest lesson I’ve ever learned about servant leadership,” said Tracey, “came from my mother. She told me that we should serve the most when we feel like doing it the least. She told me that was when we could make the biggest impact on our personal lives.

And what can I say?

Mom was right.”

Every year around this time, hurricanes storm in like a thief in the night, looking to rob whatever a family or business has: food, shelter, clothing, money, transportation, and even loved ones. These disasters strike so suddenly it can be difficult to seek out ways to help immediately. But if we knew what to do before disaster strikes, perhaps a victim’s help would arrive sooner in the aftermath. Here are some general, quick, and creative ways to help hurricane victims.

STATEWIDE RELIEF FOUNDATIONS

Look into some charitable organizations in North Carolina and see how they are helping the victims with their recovery and restoration.

Foundations such as The Winston-Salem Foundation, Cumberland Community Foundation, North Carolina Community Foundation, and the Outer Banks Community Foundation are very productive ways to start, as they all offer help in different areas of North Carolina.

AIR BNB

Short for “air-bed and breakfast,” Airbnb is a marketplace that allows people to rent out their properties or spare rooms to accommodate traveling guests, giving them unique places to stay. With Airbnb, you get to offer your home to hurricane victims who are fleeing from their hometowns to a safer place to stay until the storm subsides. You get to set your own price and even get to leave extra food, water, and clothing for the guests if needed. Offering your home is one of the best things you can do to help a hurricane victim. Also, you can earn money by using your home for Airbnb – that way, you can use the money you earn by putting it towards a disaster relief fund. But do your research first!

USE YOUR CRAFT!

What are you natural at? Baking? Making clothes? Singing? Find a way to monetize your talents and abilities and raise money to donate to hurricane relief funds. This can include local bake sales, benefit concerts or art galleries, or a church yard sale. Make clothing items, blankets, or tote bags and sell them, either locally or online. Organize a talent show at your church, school, or anywhere you would like to have it, and have all the proceeds go towards a relief fund. Find a way to do a charity fashion show and raise money for the victims. Whatever you do, make sure it is enjoyable, catchy, and profitable, and keep the victims in mind as you are planning.

AMERICAN RED CROSS

With every natural disaster that occurs, the American Red Cross promptly jumps into action by delivering food, shelter, clothing, and emotional support to victims. This organization offers adequate help such as overnight shelter stays, emergency supplies (hygienic products, rakes, tarps, and trash bags to clean up affected environments), food, friendly volunteers, and emergency response vehicles. You can help with Red Cross either by donating generously, giving blood or by becoming a volunteer.

They are extremely practical pieces of furniture that can go in almost every room of your house. Blanket chests are also great to use for storage and are typically found at the foot of a bed. But, in the Laster family, we like to use them as coffee tables. The bigger, the better!

As long as we give sincere praise to our Heavenly Father, we have opportunities to worship every day and in personal ways.

CHURCH ATTENDANCE

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him, you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” ~ Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV Obviously, the first thing one thinks of when they think of worship is church attendance. But going to church is no longer a one-size-fitsall experience. From traditional services to contemporary worship – there are a number of ways to worship at church. Whether you prefer traditional or contemporary worship isn’t relevant – it’s the sincerity of the heart and a genuine desire to praise and honor God that matters most. It’s a privilege to be in the House of the Lord and to worship with other believers.

It enables us to support both churches and ministries as they work to spread the Gospel. While there are those who will argue that the church shouldn’t collect money, that’s unreasonable. Churches and ministries have real costs and real expenses to operate.

“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” ~1 Peter 4:10 NLT Volunteering in your church or through other ministries is a definite form of worship as it allows you to help extend the word of God, even if your role is behind the scenes. Whatever ways you use your spiritual gifts to His glory, they have eternal results.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Worshiping our Lord is deeply personal, yet also about community. Serving others as we serve the Lord; offering Him praise and thanksgiving – all incredible ways to personalize the way we worship.

Did I Make the Right Decision?

For many people, while growing up, making decisions could be as simple as flipping a coin or saying “eenie meenie minie moe.” However, once a person becomes an adult, making decisions can be somewhat tougher.

Adults share the same choices of thinking what to wear, eat, and do as children, but adults’ decisions also include how to pay the bills, where to live, what type of car to purchase, and whether or not to take a job. The outcomes to these questions are a little harder than choosing to wear a sweater on a chilly day. Often, a person can second guess the conclusion they’ve reached and waste unnecessary time and energy. But there are ways to lessen the stress and fully embrace your choices for those difficult life decisions.

• In her article, “7 Steps to Making Better Decisions,” Catherine Price states that “Decision making is intrinsically linked to our emotions.”

The way we feel about certain questions and answers can tell us a lot about what we should do, good and bad. When emotions come into play, “trust your gut,” which is the feeling you get when you know something is correct, your intuition. Your intuition is your guide and usually gives you the answer you need. Don’t rush into a decision, just because you are ready for an immediate way out of a stressful situation. Weigh all your options and do your research. There is no harm in taking your time and thinking things through.

every decision, you’ll have critics and people giving their opinions on what you should do. Remember – it is your life. However, if you are pressured into making a judgment you weren’t in favor of, make the best of it. Reflect on how this result can be a plus and how it can help you in the long run. Any type of experience from a job, living in a city, etc. is something you can learn from and use. If you can’t turn a negative into a positive, then rethink your decision and don’t be afraid to speak up.

• Practice making choices. Start by increasing your time deciding on the simple things, such as what to eat, where to go, etc. According to writer Nell Wulfhart, in his article “4 Steps to Make a Hard Decision Faster,” give yourself only 30 seconds for easy choices and continue this pattern until you are able to use the piece of advice on bigger tasks. This can be tough to do, at first, but the key behind this skill is not to rush into a decision, but also not to waste unnecessary time and energy. Instead, you are able to get to the point of what you are trying to decide. Then, you are able to do the research needed and go forward.

• Next, think about your goals. For example, you are given two job offers at once, and you are trying to make a decision on which one to take. Picture where you want to be in life in one year, five years, and ten years. Which job fits that image? Be self-reflective and know what you want in life and your next job. This tip can go for anything you are trying to choose. Analyze your options, where you want to be, and go from there.

• Finally, embrace your decisions. Almost everyone questions themselves after making a difficult decision. Did I take the right job? Am I going to like living in this new city? When you decide on an answer, believe this answer is meant for you and embrace it. Think to yourself that, “This is where I need to be in this stage of my life and this experience will help me learn new things.” Remember you don’t have to stay in one place forever. Also, it is beneficial to ask yourself, “What is the worst-case scenario of the situation?” Accepting the decisions you make is one of the biggest lessons you can learn. By doing so, you are letting peace and relaxation into your life.

• Don’t decide upon a certain answer just because you feel as if you are supposed to. Instead, take a step back and ask yourself “why” you should and shouldn’t choose that particular outcome. In almost

My Dog, Gidget A Story about Loving an Older Pet

I’ll be honest. I’ve put off writing this article for some time and saved it for last on my list for August. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to write it. Instead, I knew penning this story would bring up many emotions that I wasn’t sure I was ready to confront.

Over the years, I have written several articles about my miniature poodle, Gidget.

From “Lessons from My Furry Friend” to “Taking Care of Dogs with Dementia,” and references to her in other articles, one could easily tell how much Gidget was a part of my family. Sadly, on Friday, October 13th, 2017, Gidget passed away in my arms at the age of 17. Just writing that sentence makes my heart break and brings tears to my eyes. Losing a pet is tough. The house is quieter with a sudden emptiness in all the rooms, and days no longer consist of vet trips, feedings, and asking, “Where’s Gidget?” However, during these past ten months, I have learned what it means to love and be loved by an older pet. The lessons are ones that people, no matter what their life consists of, can relate to and use.

ENJOY THE PRESENT AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE FUTURE.

Gidget started getting sick late spring of last year. My family began to grieve and dread what life would be like without her. Yet, Gidget was still with us, not in pain, and could have a couple of months to a couple of years left. From this, Gidget taught us to enjoy the present and not worry about the future. Changing my mindset and starting to live in the present with Gidget made all the difference.

Reflecting on her younger years and funny memories became easier because we were still making special moments. The future comes far too quickly, and the best thing anyone can do is to live in the present.

BE THANKFUL FOR THE TIMES YOU SPENT TOGETHER.

My opinion might be a little biased, but Gidget had the world’s biggest personality. She was sweet, friendly, sneaky, a ham, and a major cuddle-bug.

She always knew how to put a smile on a person’s face and how to get all the attention. (Ever had a dog who would take a small piece of food and “attack” it in front of everyone just to get all the claps and praise? Yes, that was Gidget.)

Looking back at all of these times, I am always brought to laughter. A piece of advice: whenever you are feeling sad and missing a loved one, reflect on the good times you spent together. This is just one of the many ways you will feel closer to them.

YOU’LL NEVER REGRET SPENDING TIME CARING FOR A LOVED ONE. Everyone has their own way of taking care of loved ones and should do what works for them. In my family, we treated Gidget like an elderly human family member. When she got really sick and even before that, our lives rotated around her and her needs. Life was busy during this time, with vet trips three times a week for fluids and assisting

However, if we were given the chance, every single member of my family would do that all over again, because, in return, Gidget gave us love. As I mentioned above, she was a huge cuddle-bug. It was our nightly ritual for me to hold her on my chest as we drifted off to sleep. Towards the end, Gidget never wanted to be put down at night, and I don’t look back at the loss of sleep and everything we did for her with regret. This is the same with other family members and friends. Go the extra step for them when they are sick.

LOVE NEVER TRULY LEAVES YOU.

Whether it be a human or a pet, loved ones will always stay in your heart, no matter what. There are little reminders of Gidget throughout the house, just like there are reminders of my grandfather, who has passed away. In her later years, Gidget taught me that she will always be a part of this family and will keep loving us, even after she’s gone.

Loving an older pet is something very special. You and your animal grow closer on a different level, and they become more dependent on you. In return, your pet gives you extra love and many memories, just like Gidget gave my family and me.

Becoming Your Own Best Friend

Why is it easy to be our own biggest enemy? Let’s be honest, many of us want to be perfect. We want the ideal career, the best hair, quality intelligence, the best wardrobe, and to be the best speaker we can be. We set very high, and sometimes unrealistic, expectations of ourselves and what we want to become. When we come up short, we naturally scorn ourselves for not being “good enough.” We want the best, and most of the time it’s easier to blame ourselves for our mistakes because we’re the ones who made them. But if we were our own best friend instead of our biggest enemy, we would see a massive difference in our selves and our lives.

WHY WE SHOULD BE OUR OWN BEST FRIEND…

No matter how many great people we meet in life, we can be sure that no one takes care of us the way we care for ourselves. Only we know our deepest needs and yearnings; our greatest strengths and weaknesses; and what we need to do to press forward towards our goals. Becoming intimate with ourselves is the first step to becoming our own best friend.

HOW TO BECOME YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND.

4. Challenge yourself every day. Whether big or small, challenges are something we should embrace because they only carve personal growth and development.

Face a fear or anxiety, no matter what it is. Compliment a stranger. Meet a higher sales goal at work. Learn a difficult language. Read a book that is outside of your comfort zone. Nobody grows in a static lifestyle.

1. Get to know yourself. Just like you had to get to know your best friend in high school before you two became close, you must get to know yourself intimately.

Assess your areas of interest, gifts, and talents, all your favorites, passions, even what you look for in a spouse. If it helps at all, start a journal—either an oldfashioned paperback journal or a private video journal and see how much you learn about yourself.

5. Stop comparing! Nothing steals joy quicker than comparing oneself to another. Nothing breeds insecurity or inadequacy like comparison. Once you realize your own greatness and focus on your own work and personal growth, and that nobody can walk out your calling like you can, you won’t feel the need to compare.

2. Seek out your positive qualities. What do you like about yourself? What are your favorite characteristics, physical or personality-wise? Make a list of all the things you admire about yourself and everything you are good at and imagine how you will be without them. This will help you be more appreciative of your characteristics that you (and others) may take for granted. See how you can put them to use every day for yourself and others. Think about how far those positive qualities will get you in life and especially how they relate to your life’s purpose.

6. Spend some quality time with yourself. Don’t be ashamed to treat yourself to a movie, a manicure/pedicure, dinner by yourself, or even a weekend getaway. This will give you relaxation and time to reflect and meditate.

3. Talk to yourself. Have one-on-one conversations with yourself about anything at all (this sharpens intelligence). Give yourself encouragement and compliments.

Motivate yourself on a bad day. Start telling yourself in the morning that you have the capability to face the day ahead. Tell yourself, “You look stunning!” before walking out of the house even if you must doll yourself up to do so. Tell yourself the same thing even when you’re at home with no makeup on! Speaking positivity into yourself eventually transforms your countenance. Most folks may believe self-talk makes one look insane, but it’s even more insane to not engage in it.

8. Be honest with yourself. Not in a self-deprecating way, but in a healthy way. If you know you made a mistake, own up to it and don’t blame others. Be honest about your flaws and how you can improve them. Just like a best friend is real with you, you must keep it real with yourself!

7. Take care of your mind and body. Keep your body and mind in shape with exercise, healthy eating, and meditation.

POTTER TERESA WOLFE USES EARTH, WIND & FIRE

When she’s not hard at work at Reynolds High School, potter Teresa Wolfe is finding her zen hand-building clay in the pottery studio at Sawtooth School for Visual Art or carving designs in her clay in her home studio.

A North Carolina native, Teresa majored in art at East Carolina University. She then lived several years in Northern Alexandria, McLean and Falls Church, Virginia, just minutes from our nation’s capital. She found much inspiration in the art and artists she met in art museums and galleries in D.C. She brought that inspiration with her as she moved back to North Carolina to Winston-Salem to be closer to family as she raised her four children.

Teresa found working in clay to be a wonderful escape from difficulties and pain in her life. “They say clay is the new yoga and I would say it’s true, as I would leave the studio with calmness and peace, letting negativity go,” said Teresa. “In

working in clay, first working with the wheel then hand building, I found an outlet of creativity and friends, generous people that encourage you and share their knowledge of working in clay. As I worked through my emotions, life, and thoughts, I used carving in clay as my path to positivity, incorporating my thoughts and everyday life in my clay work.” Though she experienced difficulties in her life, as we all do, Teresa sought to express lightheartedness and positivity through her work.

“Life is tough enough,” she explained. Much of her work depicts women, and so has a strong pro-woman, yet fun, feel. She began using messages from pop songs to express positivity, such as “Here she comes just a walking down the street, singing doo-wah-diddy-diddy-dum-diddydo” or Cindy Lauper’s “ Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” or silly phrases like “You go, girl!” and other self-affirming mantras. Her cat, “Izzy,” is another of her muses and also often appears in her work.

“When the kiln opens, it’s like your birthday, with all these gifts – some are not what you expected, as glazes are fickle and the kiln is not always good to you, but other times you find unexpected beauty.”

Zinzi Clemmons: What We Lose

Zinzi Clemmons, originally from Philadelphia, PA, now resides with her family in Los Angeles. She graduated from Brown and Columbia universities.

In 2011, she co-founded the literary journal, Apogee.

She is an associate editor for the Believer and a contributing editor for Literary Hub. Zinzi also teaches writing at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

What We Lose is her first novel, released in 2017 by Viking, an imprint of Penguin Random House LLC. The novel was a finalist for the Carnegie Medal, the Aspen Words Literary Prize, and National Book Critics Circle Leonard Prize. In 2017, she was named an honoree of the National Book Award 5 under 35.

her mom. Thandi’s loneliness is haunting as she reflects on her thoughts and reaches out to others. Her romantic relationship is complex, and she ultimately resorts to creating a pro and con checklist, something many of us have done at some point in our lives. Her move into motherhood is alternatively uncomfortable and heartwarming. It is in these musings that one may find that they check the cover to confirm this is a novel versus a journal; the feelings are truly raw and relatable.

Off in the distance, across, perhaps, two aisles, you may be drawn to the sharp pointed leaves and thick yellowing skin of a fresh pineapple. The juicy meat is more than just a fruit to be added to cocktails, or flavoring to cakes, hams, casseroles, salads, and pizzas, as well as sorbets, jellies, and popsicles. It’s summer . . . yet another hot summer day. Ready to escape the summer heat and enjoy a nutritious treat? Ready to chill out and cool off? You can! Round up some fruit, a few basic tools and simple ingredients, and get ready to celebrate summer with yummy frozen snacks that are healthy for you!

Chocolate Banana Soft Ice Cream: Peel then freeze 3 bananas. Mix the frozen bananas with 2 Tablespoons carob or cocoa powder in a blender. Serve immediately. Quick? You bet!

You don’t have to cut delicious desserts out of your diet since these frozen treats are practically guilt-free with healthy ingredients you can feel good about.

Berry Greek Yogurt Pops: Combine 1/2 cup Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup milk, and 1 cup frozen berries. Mix ingredients in a blender then pour into paper cups or popsicle molds and freeze until almost firm. Insert popsicle stick handles and continue freezing until solid. Enjoy!

Ever find yourself daydreaming about what might have been? Perhaps you think about the career chances you didn’t take, but secretly wish you had. It’s never too late to follow those dreams. History is full of people who stepped out of their comfort zones at different stages of life to follow dreams or paths that might have been surprising, or even shocking. Perhaps you’ll find your inspiration in their chances.

Vera Wang was once a competitive figure skater; however, she missed making the 1968 US Olympic team. Instead, she became a magazine editor, then a design director of accessories for Ralph Lauren. Ultimately, she launched her own line of bridal fashions and became an icon of the bridal industry.

Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay for Rocky in four days. Although many producers wanted to buy the script, he held out to play the lead role himself. His first role may not have been a big paycheck, but it launched his career and solidified his place in Hollywood.

John Glenn became an American icon and hero as the first American to orbit the earth. At age 53, he decided to enter the political arena as a US Senator from Ohio. Space called him back, however, in 1998, when he joined the crew on the Discovery space shuttle at age 77, making him the oldest man to orbit.

Acting Out! At UNCSA

“Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” ~Sanford Meisner The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is internationally known and recognized for excellence.

It’s a place to study and refine an artist’s craft. In some community programs, the craft is frequently glossed over, however, a program like Acting Out!, with its focus on building tools of the acting craft, is a critical one for our community.

ABOUT ACTING OUT!

Acting Out! seeks to fill a void in this community and serves to reach out to theatre enthusiasts throughout the Triad. Led by UNCSA professor Janine Hawley, Acting Out! has been a part of UNCSA for four years.

Acting Out! seeks to uphold one of the central tenets of the UNCSA mission: “to be a beacon for the arts in the region and the state.”

“When the Board of Trustees tasked us with the challenge of pursuing the feasibility of a community drama program, we surveyed the area to determine if there was a need for our unique form of actor training,” said Janine. “Our team has enjoyed developing and honing a broad range of classes for students in grades 1 – 12. Our classes are age-appropriate and designed to build their toolbox of skills. We focus on the process of acting versus the final product. And with the positive response we’ve received from the community, we’ve been able to grow and expand.”

Acting Out! offers small groups of seven to 16 people per group who meet once or twice a week (depending on the class). “Our class sizes are small to allow for more personalized instruction,” said Janine.

“The training is at the forefront of our commitment and we work diligently to lead students to reaching their potential.”

“Our instructors are alumni of the UNCSA program,” shared Janine. “It’s a win-win-win!

Our students have access to conservatorytrained teaching artists, and alumni seeking teaching experience are employed in a program related to their specific training and passion.

Our faculty is committed to seeing children grow and thrive, not only as actors, but as people. The third win is for the program itself.

When we have such excellent teachers and instructors that share a love of theatre with the students, our program becomes stronger and more recognized for the quality and professionalism for which UNCSA is known.”

Select students of Acting Out! are given the opportunity to showcase their training through an annual production. Most recently, students performed “Legally Blonde: The Musical.” A sold-out run, the performances earned rave reviews, including accolades from Forsyth Woman publisher, Keela Johnson.

“I was amazed by the professionalism and attention to detail,” said Keela.

“Acting Out! produced a top-notch performance that kept the audience laughing, engaged, and entertained!”

A Day to Honor and Remember Purple Heart Recipients

Nestled on a shelf in the living room curio cabinet is my grandfather’s World War II keepsakes. Included is a picture of him in uniform, a pilot logbook, and numerous medals. In his medals collection lies my grandfather’s purple heart. He received this honor from an injury obtained while parachuting out of an airplane that had been shot down by the Germans over Italy. While the injury wasn’t major, the Purple Heart serves as a reminder of the sacrifices my grandfather and many other soldiers made while fighting for our country.

THE MEANING OF THE PURPLE HEART

August 7 is known as National Purple Heart Day and commemorates the creation of this honor in 1782. Historians state the Purple Heart was developed by General George Washington, who was then the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The medal was originally named the Badge of Military Merit. Interesting fact: the Badge of Military Merit was awarded to three Revolutionary War soldiers in 1783. However, the military medal wouldn’t be given again until 1932 to soldiers in the Armed Forces who were wounded or killed on or after April 5, 1917. This year, 1932, was also when the Badge of Military Merit was renamed the Purple Heart, to honor President Washington’s birthday bicentennial. According to the United States Army’s website, Purple Hearts are now presented to soldiers in the Armed Forces who have been “wounded, killed, or died from a wound received” during an enemy attack. It is also given to those who were injured, wounded, or died while they were prisoners of war. Today, it is estimated that over 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded.

THE SYMBOLISM BEHIND THE DESIGN

Many people recognize the medal as a sign of bravery. Researchers have stated the award is purple, because it represents the blood and courage of the soldiers in the Armed Forces. The heart-shaped medal has gold trim and a profile image of George Washington.

Above the heart is a shield with Washington’s coat of arms between green leaves. On the back, the words for military merit are inscribed below the same coat of arms and leaves. Lastly, the heart hangs from a purple ribbon with stripes along the edges. The design of the current Purple Heart is said to be based on the original color of the Badge of Military Merit.

MORE THAN A MEDAL

The Purple Heart has a different meaning for everyone, especially for those who served in the military.

Vietnam veteran Doug Magruder is a Purple Heart recipient. On February 5, 1969, he was hit by an AK47 ricochet during a firefight.

The bullet bounced off something and hit Magruder in his left buttock.

“I was hospitalized for several days and was automatically given a Purple Heart. In that same firefight, Specialist Fourth Class Chester Jon Kmit, Walking Point, was Killed In Action (KIA). Walking Point is the most life threading position of a Combat Infantry Company! Any soldier who did it knew that his life was in danger.” said Magruder.

“Walking Point” means that soldier on that day will usually be the first to make contact with the enemy. Four out of five of the men KIA in Magruder’s Platoon were either Walking Point or right behind the Point Man. Prior to being wounded on February 5, Magruder had been “superficially” wounded on December 5, 1968 and January 5, 1969. Because he had already lost four soldiers KIA, he did not think these minor wounds needed to be reported.

Following are the 5 soldiers in Magruder’s Platoon who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their Purple Heart: Private First Class Michael J. Cromie, November 18, 1968 Specialist Fourth Class Donald R. Stoltz, December 4, 1968 Staff Sergeant William C. Williams, December 4, 1968 Specialist Fourth Class Willie G. Jones, December 4, 1968 Specialist Fourth Class Chester Jon Kmit, February 5, 1969 “I believe the true recipients are those who were killed in action while serving,” explained Magruder. “According to the Army, I only have one official Purple Heart, but that’s okay with me. It puts me in the company of the young men who gave their lives for our country.”

To honor these five young men, Magruder is developing plans to remember the 50th anniversary of their deaths from November 2018 through February 2019.

OBSERVING NATIONAL PURPLE HEART DAY

There are multiple ways you can take part in National Purple Heart Day. First, check to see if your community is hosting a remembrance service or an event to thank the recipients. Also, fly your American flag and encourage family and friends to listen to the veterans and soldiers talk about their military service.

As is the case year after year, it seems the kiddos just got out of school when it is time to start “back-toschool” shopping yet again! Some parents try to gather the obvious supplies like pencils, paper and binders throughout the summer when sales pop up here and there in anticipation of the dreaded lists of school supplies they will receive on or before open house night at their children’s respective schools. If you are able, please consider picking up a few extra items to donate to the Educator Warehouse to support those educators who find themselves “back-to-school” shopping for all the items they will need throughout the school year.

Many parents struggle to afford even the most basic supplies like pencils and paper, forcing them to send their children to school with empty book bags. With extremely tight budgets within the school system, teachers find themselves picking up the slack and purchasing supplies for their students out of their own pockets.

This is where Educator Warehouse comes into play.

This non-profit helps all teachers employed in the WS/ FCS system who have filled out a simple application on the school district’s website. Each quarter, teachers are allowed to shop for classroom supplies using points they have been given, as opposed to their hard-earned dollars. With some teachers spending in excess of $500 of their own money on school supplies for their classrooms, Educator Warehouse strives to close this gap in an effort to allow teachers to avoid spending their hard-earned money on paper and pencils. The Educator Warehouse also offers special shopping days at the beginning of the year for teachers to stock up on supplies.

While donating money is always appreciated, Educator Warehouse Director Karel Chandler also needs volunteers. The Educator Warehouse also benefits greatly from direct donations of much-needed supplies.

Forsyth Woman magazine will be collecting supplies at our Girls’ Night Out at Legacy Saddlebred and Event Center on Thursday, August 9th starting at 5 pm. Bring school supplies to donate and receive extra tickets for the fabulous prize board!

The term, the “right ingredients” is usually linked to a delicious recipe, but it can also describe an attractive combination of décor in a child’s bedroom. Today, young children and teens occupy a creative room that has a ‘wow’ factor. Depending on your carpentry skills, the height of ceilings and size of the room, children may truly have the most interesting room in the house.

UP IN THE AIR

UPDATED BUNK BEDS

The grand desire for a treehouse has inspired the idea to build a loft in the shape of a house, boat or castle. Similar to living among the trees, children can also experience sleeping in secretive place. It requires nine-foot walls, at a minimum. This innovative concept also provides a key benefit: available floor space.

Underneath the beams, just imagine placing a desk and a bookshelf, an activity table and a chalk wall, or a sitting area and fish tank.

For decades, the solution for same sexed siblings was to share a room and sleep in bunk beds. This system has saved both floor space and offered siblings a comfortable means to sleep. The modernized system combines the premise of bunk beds while promoting individual space and privacy. Constructed within a wall, today’s bunk beds have a more stable structure and offer occupants personal lighting and, perhaps, a side shelf. With a large room, two bunk bed systems for four can be constructed and include a unique, wide staircase.

• The Murphy bed, also termed the wall bed, is another idea to increase floor space, especially if the child is old enough to lower, and raise and secure the bed.

Remember the toy box, which contained anything and everything? Digging through to find one toy resulted in a room of toys strewn in every direction across the floor. Organization and concealment has led to individual storage boxes designed in an array of colors and sizes. Now, children can find items and clean up based on the storage container and shelving system. For purposes of safety, wall units have grown in popularity. (Just remember, toddlers as young as two enjoy climbing. To deter your son or daughter, try placing canvas boxes in empty shelves or bar the shelf with canvas material that can be either snapped or Velcroed in place.)

• Controlled by a pulley system, the raised bed can elevate to the ceiling revealing an open floor.

• A platform bed suspended by ropes attached to the ceiling is another unique way to eliminate a traditional bed while changing the dynamics of a bedroom.

THE JACK AND JILL BATHROOM

Growing up with a sister or brother, eventually, the need to occupy the bathroom became a problem. The solution was to accommodate the dual needs of Jack and Jill. The toilet and shower area can both be enclosed with a door, separate from the sink and linen closet. This allowed one child the privacy of showering while the other sibling tended to washing hands or brushing his teeth. With this feature, siblings can make greater use of the bathroom.

A shared bathroom can also be constructed in the center of two bedrooms, allowing two entrances or just one, with multiple doors for the linen closet, toilet area and possibly the shower.

The modern child is enjoying the thrill of sharing a bedroom and bathroom with the perks of a secret area to be alone or enjoy moments of sisterly or brotherly togetherness.

Pamper Thy Feet

Slide your feet into a pair of shoes, and the senses are immediately heightened. As the first heel is lifted and placed on the ground, termed a heal strike, the body begins a complex cycle of steps. Energy from the ground is transferred through the feet up into the ankles, past the hip; then, up to the spine and reaching the head. Underneath the leather, nylon, canvas, or other covering material, the foot deserves to feel as though every step is a symphony of comfortable strides. While the foot has 42 muscles, 26 bones, 33 joints, 50 ligaments and tendons, and over 250,000 glands, it is capable of handling weight while in motion; however, without proper care and the right footwear, aches, pains, and injuries can occur.

THE RIGHT SHOES

Have you ever bought a pair of shoes knowing the appearance weighed more than the correct size, and, realized much too late you couldn’t wear them because ? Yes, it happened they hurt your feet to much? Yes, it’s happened to most of us! These valuable lessons often change our outlook by selecting shoes which have a sturdy base. High heels, for instance, can alter the center of balance. As the weight is shifted to the ball of the foot, the pelvis is tilted forward, which results in the body leaning backward. With every inch in height, the heels will present greater strain on the lumbar spine, hips, and knees. A condition from placing pressure on the toes, termed Morton’s neuroma, is based on the symptoms of pain burning in the ball of the foot and radiating to the third and fourth toes.

Tip: It is important not to wear the same shoes day after day; instead, chose a shoe which suits the proper activity.

Tip: The best time to go shoe shopping is at the end of the day when your feet have reached their maximum size. Always measure your foot while standing.

THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR FEET

On a daily basis, touch your feet to assess dryness, cracks, swelling or sores in the skin, as well as wash, dry, and thoroughly moisturize them. If you discover your feet are both excessively dry or cracked, and cold for most of the day, there

may be a greater medical problem you need to address. Most often, cold feet may be linked to nerve damage, diabetes, or circulatory problems associated with smoking, high blood pressure, or heart disease.

A sensation of burning or hot feet is not only common among diabetics with peripheral nerve damage, but it can be due to a vitamin B deficiency, poor circulation in the legs and feet, athlete’s foot, or chronic kidney disease. A doctor can inform you of any serious correlations to either cold or hot feet.

SWOLLEN FEET

When muscles are overworked, blood vessels have the propensity to widen, which allows blood to supply an area. The feeling of pain is the body’s way of helping. Many individuals may experience swollen feet due to poor circulation or standing too long.

Additional internal causes are from a blood clot, kidney disorder, or an underactive thyroid. While swelling is often just a symptom, it can be connected to a disorder. The first action is to sit down, remove your shoes, and quickly elevate your feet. Place an ice pack or cool cloth on the swollen areas for 20 minutes as the first action.

Tip: Whether you drink eight glasses of water daily, soak your feet in Epsom salt, or engage in swimming or yoga exercises, these extra efforts will help relax muscles and give you comfort.

Throughout the day, take a few minutes to wiggle your toes, and rotate your ankles.

Tip: Absolutely put up your feet when sitting, and do not cross your legs for extended periods of time.

Foot care is more than just maintaining soft and smooth skin with pumice stones and lotion, or trimming the toenails straight across and filing edges with an emery board. It requires an effort to respond to those aches and pains and determining if a greater problem is starting to develop. Diet and water intake are vital to the comfort of each stride taken. It’s not always about style.

Raised in Kentucky by two immigrant physicians, [I] found my love for OB/GYN when I spent time in Zambia during college and witnessed the tragedies associated with child labor that, fortunately, are rare occurrences in our country. I have always felt that women’s health issues have deserved more central attention.” When not at work, Samantha enjoys horseback riding, traveling, baking cupcakes and spending time with her Great Danes.

JENNIFER F. GREENLY, CLINIC ADMINISTRATOR Jennifer F. Greenly has served as a registered dietitian at Novant Health WomanCare since 2002 and has recently taken on the role of clinic administrator. She received an undergraduate degree in food and nutrition science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a graduate degree in human nutrition from the University of Delaware. “I am most proud of my role in creating an innovative program for the early identification and treatment of diabetes in pregnancy at WomanCare during my tenure as one of two dietitians in our office,” said Jennifer. “As a clinic administrator, I am tasked with creating an environment which provides remarkable, innovative healthcare to the women of our region. Every team member in my office brings with them unique experiences and a unique perspective on their domain of healthcare. It happens to most people. Every once in a while, during a conversation, you think, “Is this person lying to me?” You then spend unnecessary time going over their words in your head, thinking about whether or not what they said is true. However, sometimes detecting a liar is something that can be easily done in less than five minutes. All you need to look for are certain actions and movements a person does when they are lying. Body language says it all, and I’ve got your tips and tricks for spotting a liar.

1. According to Dr. Gregory Jantz, in his article “6 Ways to Detect a Liar in Just Seconds,” more than 80 percent of lies go unnoticed.

To prevent this from happening, start by asking neutral questions. Listen to how a person responds to questions about the weather, their hobbies, etc. Be attentive to their body language when they are telling the truth by watching their eye movements, stance, and hand positions. This will help you suspect any unusual actions for when they answer questions that are in the so-called “lie zone.” These questions are ones that aren’t rhetorical and require more in-depth responses.

2. After the neutral questions are complete, begin observing a person’s facial expressions, responses, and body language as a person replies to personal questions.

Surprise questions are another way to bring out lies. Most of the time a person pulls their body inward when lying and shrugs their shoulders. Also, they might become squirmy, jiggle their feet, and hide their hands to prevent fidgety fingers. Lastly,

look for any hand gestures towards the face. These gestures, along with the other body movements listed above, are signs of distress and dishonesty. Research shows that President Bill Clinton touched his nose 88 times during his Lewinsky testimony.

3. Watch for any facial changes and microexpressions, which are brief expressions that are used to conceal emotions. Sometimes a person’s face can exhibit a light shade of pink color as if they were flushed, or they may flare nostrils. Other ways to tell include biting their lips, blinking quickly or not at all, and perspiring. Shifts in body language and facial expressions occur during lying because there is an increase in the person’s brain activity.

4. In the article, “An FBI Agent’s 8 Ways to Spot a Liar,” former FBI agent Justin Bariso states to listen more than you speak, meaning liars will talk more and in more complex sentences to stop the truth from getting out. He suggests being on alert if a person speaks faster, louder, and has a

cracking in their voice. All are indications that the person is stressed. Repetitive coughing and clearing of the throat are clues of tension, as well.

5. Bariso also notes that one should watch as someone says the word “no.” A person might be lying if they do one of these characteristics when answering “no”: looking in a different direction, hesitating, closing their eyes, stretching the word out, and replying in a singsong manner.

6. Along with paying attention to the way a person speaks, pay attention to what they say. Some signs of a lie are: refusing to give details to short answers or providing too many details, speaking more formally, over-exaggerating or giving numerous compliments, and making contradictions to early parts of a conversation. Also, look for repeated phrases when talking. Sometimes a person will have prepared their answers for expected questions. When caught off-guard, they are more likely to show inconsistencies and stressful behavior.

Unfortunately, almost every person in the world lies at least once in their lives. However, some lies have more negative impacts than others. If you suspect someone is lying to you, use the tips above to decide fact from fiction.

The Art of Drying, Preserving, & Pressing Flowers

The fragrant bouquet of a floral arrangement is more than just eye-catching. The color and scent have proven through research to elevate one’s mood, reduce stress, and encourage healing. While the initial sight of a bouquet has intrinsic rewards, dried flowers remain beautiful without the need to change water. While you garden to promote blooms and plant health, a particular selection of flowers can be forever yours through the art of preservation.

THE RIGHT FLOWER

Seeking a flower that is easy to grow, a perennial, with the added benefit that it dries well? Then start planting the following flowers. Many of them serve more than one purpose, the coneflower and lavender, for instance, can be used for medicinal purposes. Flowers which contain a high-water content do not dry with favorable results. Consider adding wildflowers found along the roadside such as tansy, wild oregano, flat-topped Goldenrod, and sea lavender. These and many more can offer a beautiful addition to your collection. It is important to cut your flowers right after the morning dew has disappeared. Select only those flowers that have buds ready to open, before the peak of the bloom.

In the drying process, these flowers will open.

CHOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING LIST:

Amaranth, ammobium, anaphalis, anise hyssop, artemisia, astilbe, baby’s breath, bachelor’s buttons, celosia, coneflower, globe amaranth, globe thistle, hydrangea, lady’s mantle, larkspur, lavender, love-ina-mist, marjoram, mealy cup sage, pearly everlasting, pompom dahlias, poppy, roses, sea holly, sunflowers, starflowers, statice, strawflower, and yarrow.

TRADITIONAL PRESERVATION

One traditional method is to gather the flowers upside down in one hand, remove the foliage from the stems, and secure the bunch with a strong tie such as a rubber band.

It is recommended to group small bunches together. As stems dry and shrink, the risk of individual flowers falling to the floor can

occur. One successful location to hang flowers is in a well-ventilated, dry location out of direct sunlight, such as an empty closet, basement, attic, or a dark garage. Petals will begin to shrink and change color. For up to three weeks, you will have a beautiful selection of vintage hues.

SILICA GEL PRESERVATION

If you don’t want to wait a few weeks for flowers to dry or limit yourself to the type of flower, another option is to use silica gel or a mixture of one-part Borax to two parts cornmeal. This process requires the flowers to be immersed in the sandy substance up to the stems or laid on their sides in an air-tight container. The result is vibrant, and well-preserved flowers.

Pro: Silica gel can be reused if placed in an air-tight container.

PRESS TO PRESERVE

Pressed flowers evoke a remembrance of a special occasion or simply a stunning bloom. Hidden in a book, the moment in time becomes both personal and secret.

Flowers that lay flat such as the African daisy and tickseed may be the easiest forms to press; however, pressing is not limited to just one specific shape. Ageratum has a number of flowers in one stem, and blue salvia is cylindrical in shape.

Succulents and cacti can also be an option for pressing.

Other types of flowers are: alstroemerias, baby’s breath, bleeding hearts, bluebells, buttercups, daisies, ferns (and various types of leaves such as strawberry leaves, ivy, mint, lavender, and garden sage), geraniums, larkspur, lilies, lily of the valley, pansies, roses, violets Tip: Remove the stamens to eliminate a stain of pollen The first step is to blow air inside a sealable bag; then, seal the flowers and refrigerate. In preparing the flowers to be pressed, think how you wish the flowers to appear. Consider overlapping for artistic effect.

One of the most traditional methods is to place the flower between two sheets of paper to protect the pages of a book, and weigh the book down (usually with more piled on books) for a few weeks.

With a bouquet of dried flowers in a vase or framed, you can promote happiness, friendliness, and warmth anywhere in the house where the color and fragrance can be enjoyed by everyone!

Money Saving for College Students

Oh, the joys of being a broke college student. How I remember the days of living on a work-study salary and “grocery shopping” at home whenever I visited. For most college students, being broke comes as a component of those four years. However, there are still ways to budget and save money while in school. Since it is the start of a new school year, there is no better time to put these tips to use than now.

• Look for student discounts in grocery stores and drugstores, restaurants, online, and more. To receive the majority of these discounts, it is as simple as showing your student identification card. If online, you might need to enter your school email address.

Many of these discounts are 10% off purchase, or possibly a free item. According to bestcollegesonline.com, some of the stores and businesses that offer student discounts or freebies include FedEx, Sam’s Club, Apple, Amazon (with Amazon Prime Student) Subway, Jiffy Lube, and AMC Theaters. Also, some places provide discounts for members of different honors societies. It never hurts to ask and you might be surprised at the amount of savings you can accumulate.

• Invest in reusable and versatile items. When it comes to packing for college, it is important to only pack items you need and will use. Make sure this includes reusable things, such as mugs, plates, and clothes. You will save space and money by bringing things that can be utilized multiple times. In addition, you will be able to create different purposes for these items. Lastly, invest in products that are durable and will last for at least four years. With clothing, look at your closet and think about the pieces that can be used for any season and any event. Sell the pieces you don’t need, no longer fit, or you haven’t worn in at least several months. That way you’ll have more money in your pocket and more space in your closet.

• Take advantage of school resources. Trust me, you don’t need to eat off campus for every meal. Put your meal plan to use and eat in your college’s dining hall. However, when choosing a meal plan, be realistic and don’t overestimate or underestimate how much money you’ll need. You don’t want to have too little or too much left over at the end of the semester. Keep a small stash of the necessities and snacks in your dorm room. It is helpful to have a small refrigerator to keep perishable items, for times when you are unable to visit the dining hall or campus store.

You don’t need to have a printer in your dorm; instead, print in the library. A simple tour around campus and a talk with student services will give you insight into the (free) resources offered. Lastly, colleges and universities provide transportation for one main purpose: to help students get around, and you need to benefit from it. Instead of wasting gas and time driving on campus, take your school’s transportation system from place to place. Another option is walking or riding a bicycle.

• Keep a spare change jar. I’ve been out of college for about three years and I still use this tip. Collect your leftover change from your wallet, pants pockets, backpack, etc. Then, every so often, count it up and cash it in at the bank.

• Budget and look for ways to earn income.

Budgeting is a skill that comes in handy at any time and is never too early to learn. While in college, use apps and websites, such as Mint, to track your income and expenses. Having a job in college can be tough for some students, but it is possible. Other ways to bring in income is through your talents. Celebrate with Twists on Traditional Staples

What is often synonymous with summer is a delightful, mouth-watering sandwich. There is nothing quite like biting into one’s favorite. Especially in the South, as this region is nationally renowned for providing a variety of unique and different sandwich fare. From Elvis Presley’s favorite, now simply known as “The Elvis,” (a banana, peanut butter and bacon sandwich, served on Italian white bread), to the more traditional staple of a B. L. T. (bacon, lettuce and tomato sadwhich), when it comes to the perfect season for sandwich— summer is the perfect time.

Considering that August is also National Sandwich Month, it is time to celebrate by adding some new sandwich ideas to your meal rotation!

Worried about ruining your summer diet with “The Elvis”? There are a

few quick tips for avoiding that prospect. For example, when choosing the bread for your sandwich, considering choosing a lighter bread or a bread filled with nutritional value, like whole grain. Another quick and easy healthy fix would be to load your sandwich with veggies, such as spinach, red onion, and tomato. Finally, two last easy tricks is to skip the cheese, choosing a low fat option, and always opt for lean proteins, like turkey breast or lean ham.

If you are looking to celebrate this last month of summer with a delicious new sandwich recipe for your family and friends, yet provide them with a healthy alternative, read on for five new delightful new twists on traditional sandwich recipes.

PORTOBELLO SLIDERS:

In this recipe, portobello mushrooms substitute for traditional pulled pork. While vegetarians will take delight in this recipe, meat-lovers may also be surprised how delicious this sandwich from the One Ingredient Chef website.

INGREDIENTS: • 4 large portobello mushrooms • 1 white onion • 1/3+ cup BBQ sauce • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1 clove garlic • 10 mini hamburger buns

GREEK YOGURT CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH:

There is nothing like a cold chicken salad sandwich on a hot summer day. Lower the calories and dial up the flavor by substituting Greek yogurt for traditional high calorie and fat mayonnaise. Try this recipe from the Damn Delicious website, and we can promise you will not miss the mayo!

INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups leftover rotisserie chicken • 1/2 cup diced red onion • 1/2 cup diced apple • 1/2 cup grapes, halved • 1/4 cup dried cranberries • 1/4 cup slivered almonds • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice, or more, to taste • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 8 slices bread • 4 leaves Boston bibb lettuce PREPARATION: 1. In a large bowl, combine chicken, red onion, apple, grapes, dried cranberries, sliced almonds, Greek yogurt, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt and pepper, to taste.

2. Serve sandwiches on bread with chicken mixture and lettuce.

PREPARATION: 1. Finely dice the onion and garlic and add these to a saucepan with a splash of water. Allow this to brown for 5-7 minutes while finely slicing the mushrooms into thin strips. Add these to the skillet with the BBQ sauce, vinegar, and soy sauce.

2. Allow everything to simmer on low heat for at least 30 minutes. The mushrooms will reduce considerably and absorb the BBQ flavor. Since BBQ sauces can vary so much, it’s smart to give the mushrooms a taste after 30 minutes to adjust any seasonings 3. When everything is ready, simply add the mushroom filling onto the mini buns (or full-sized hamburger buns) and serve.

B.L.A.T.

Yes, you read the right. Instead of settling for a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, add a bit of zest and taste to your sandwich by adding avocado spread and sprouts to the mix. This recipe, from Eating Well Magazine, is sure to make you not reach for your usual BLT staple.

INGREDIENTS: • 8 slices center-cut bacon, halved • 1 ripe medium avocado • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise • ½ teaspoon finely grated or minced garlic

• ¼ teaspoon salt • ¼ teaspoon ground pepper • 8 slices sprouted-wheat bread • 1 medium tomato, cut into 8 slices • 4 romaine leaves • 1 cup alfalfa sprouts

PREPARATION: 1. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp, 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.

2. Meanwhile, mash avocado in a medium bowl. Stir in basil, mayonnaise, garlic, salt and pepper. Toast bread.

TUSCAN TUNA SANDWICH:

In this recipe from the Half Baked Harvest website, the oldfashioned tuna sandwich is given a modern spin with “basil mayo” substituting traditional mayonnaise.

3. Spread about 2 tablespoons of the avocado mixture on 4 slices of toast.

Top each with 4 pieces of bacon, 2 tomato slices, 1 lettuce leaf, ¼ cup sprouts and the remaining toast.

INGREDIENTS: • 1/2 cup tahini (alternately you can use mayo but I don’t love mayo) • 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt • zest + juice of 2 lemons • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 cup fresh basil • salt + pepper to taste • pinch of crushed red pepper flakes • 2 ounce cans oil packed tuna oil drained, 5 • 1/4 cup kalamata olives • 2 tablespoons sun-dried tomatoes chopped • 1 loaf ciabatta bread halved lengthwise • 1 avocado sliced • 2 Persian cucumbers sliced • 4 hard boiled eggs sliced or quartered • 1 cup shredded purple cabbage • 2 cups fresh arugula • 4-6 ounces feta cheese crumbled

PREPARATION: 1. In a food processor or blender, combine tahini, greek yogurt, zest + juice of 2 lemons and the olive oil until smooth and combined. Add the basil + a pinch of salt, pepper and crushed red pepper flakes to the blender or food processor and pulse once more to combine.

2. In a medium bowl, gently combine the drained tuna with the olives and sundried tomatoes.

3. Cut the loaf of ciabatta in half lengthwise and then generously spread both halves with the basil tahini yogurt sauce. Now spread the tuna mixture over the bottom half of the ciabatta.

Layer the following ingredients in a single layer: avocado, cucumber, hard boiled eggs, cabbage and arugula.

Crumble the feta over the arugula and season with pepper. Add the top half of the ciabatta and gently push down on the sandwich to help it stick together.

4. Enjoy!

GRILLED BROCCOLI AND CHEESE:

While most kids are not crazy about broccoli, this is a sure fire way to have them asking for it this summer. This twist on the traditional grilled cheese sandwich, this new version is an easy way to include veggies in your lunch. Try out this recipe from the Two Peas & Their Pod lifestyle website.

INGREDIENTS: • Florets from 1 medium head broccoli (about 1/2 pound), chopped small • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper • Unsalted butter, softened • 6 to 8 slices bread • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded or thinly sliced PREPARATION: 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 2. On a sheet pan, mix the broccoli, oil, salt, and pepper.

Roast 8 to 10 minutes, or until the broccoli is evenly roasted but not burnt. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

3. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat.

4. Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread. Dividing the ingredients evenly, layer cheese on the unbuttered side of half of the bread slices, then add chopped broccoli in the middle and more cheese on top so that the broccoli lies between two layers of cheese. This keeps the small pieces of broccoli from falling out as the cheese melts. Top each with another slice of bread, butter side out.

5. “Grill” in the skillet, turning sandwiches over once, until the cheese melts and the bread is evenly toasted.

Giving the gift of life, donating blood, isn’t just for humans. Dogs and cats can give blood and help a fellow furry friend survive surgery, illness and other health crises requiring blood transfusions. As with humans, there is often a shortage of blood supply for pets. In some veterinarian practices, cats are kept in-house for the purpose of donating blood to felines in need, but for dogs, blood donations are often sought from the community with new donors always needed.

Veterinary medicine is becoming increasingly advanced, offering innovative ways to prolong and enhance the lives of our four-legged family members. Medical procedures and surgeries are on the rise and, as a result of these advancements, the demand for canine blood transfusions has increased sharply.

A NEW IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME

RED CROSS FOR ROVER – DOG BLOOD DONATIONS SAVE LIVES

The development of canine blood banks is a relatively new idea, but it’s one whose time has come. Many areas in our country have regional dog blood banks, but still many veterinarians have to rely on blood donations from their own dogs or those of a colleague or client.

Locally, Carolina Vet Specialists, in Winston-Salem, which deals mainly with animal emergencies and surgeries, is the main supply of dog blood and is often used in the many surgeries they do and for patients in need of transfusions for other medical issues.

REQUIREMENTS TO DONATE

Similar to humans, in order to be eligible to donate blood, dogs must be in general good health. To this end, donors must be current on their required vaccinations, including distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, hepatitis and rabies; they must also be free of any medication other than flea, tick and heartworm preventative. Dogs who have received blood transfusions and/or those with heart murmurs or other cardiac conditions are ineligible to donate blood. Age and weight requirements vary too, depending on the donation program.

After meeting the basic requirements and before the donation process can begin, dogs are given a complete physical, blood chemistry profile and complete blood count. Donors are also screened for other possible conditions like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease.

PROCESS OF DONATION

The process of canine blood donation is simple, much like its human counterpart. Blood donation typically lasts about 30 minutes. Dogs are gently placed on their sides, settled in on comfortable bedding and soothed while the area on and around the jugular vein is cleaned and prepped. Once the area has been sterilized and, if necessary, clipped or shaved, blood is then drawn through a needle into a sterile collection set. Post collection, the dogs are given belly rubs, treats and, if needed, IV fluids to help with hydration. Once the blood has been collected, it receives similar processing as human blood after donation. After donation, most veterinarians suggest letting the dog have a day of rest and limited activity, plus a little extra TLC. Just as people have blood types, so too do dogs to a certain extent.

Rather than “types,” canine blood varieties are commonly referred to as “groups.” Dogs have around 12 different blood groups, five of which are fairly common. As with humans, there are dogs that are classified as “universal donors” based on their group, making them the ideal donors. Greyhounds are frequently used as canine blood donors, as the breed tends to have the type of blood that can be used for all dogs with minimal reactions.

“There’s Gold in Them There Creeks” Panning For Gold Can Be Fun & Rewarding!

The creek in my backyard overflowed during a storm, and surging water dislodged hidden minerals that settled in exposed outcroppings and shallows. The next morning, sunlight glistened off tiny gold colored specks and flakes, many no bigger than a pinhead. Could it be gold? Or maybe it was iron pyrite, better known as fool’s gold. I shoveled a few scoops of muddy water containing specks into my miner’s pan. Although I haven’t completed my analysis, I thought I would share a few tips about gold panning in case you want to try it yourself. All you need is an inexpensive miner’s pan and a hand shovel. Just be sure you have permission to pan the river or creek. The law says that whoever owns the land owns the gold.

First, a few words of encouragement. Experts believe only 5% of the gold in North Carolina has been found. Much undiscovered gold remains in rivers and creeks, so prospecting odds are good.

There are two kinds of gold deposits: lode and placer. Placer gold is the gold you pan for in water. Placer gold begins when a lode deposit erodes by weather, leaving heavier minerals like gold. That gold is often transported down rivers or creeks. Prospectors find placer gold behind large boulders, in deep bedrock cracks, inside bends, and in other low spots where gold settles. The following advice on gold panning was provided in information circular #29 published by the North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources.

BASIC GOLD PANNING TIPS

1. Fill the pan with stream material about level with the top of the pan and submerge it in the water. Massage the material with your hands to break up clay and remove debris like sticks and rocks. Slow flowing water about one half to one foot deep is best.

2. With the pan under water hold its sides and twist the pan back and forth briskly to work the gold and heavy minerals to the bottom of your pan. During this stage, large and lightweight materials will migrate to the top, and you can dispose of them.

3. Continue to work the gold to the bottom of your pan and, as you do, lighter particles will wash over the top of the pan. Raise your pan just above the water and tilt the pan forward away from yourself. As the pan is raised particles in the top will wash over the side.

Alternate between steps 2 and 3, occasionally removing large particles that rise to the surface.

4. Over time, finer sand will wash away from darker, heavier minerals. The final concentrate will be mostly dark, heavy minerals, and gold, if you are lucky. Collect the heavy mineral concentrates in a jar or bucket for processing later. Minerals are separated by slowly rotating the pan while swirling water around the bottom of the pan.

Gold will remain near the rear of the trail of minerals.

5. Gold can be removed from the “heavies” by removing magnetic material with a magnet. When the sand is dried, it may be separated from the gold by gently blowing and then picking out the gold with tweezers.

If you don’t have access to a creek or river, consider visiting a North Carolina tourist attraction where you can practice panning skills as you search for gold and other precious and semi-precious stones. While there, you will likely meet more experienced prospectors willing to share tips and techniques. There are also rivers on public lands where you can pan for gold, such as the Uwharrie River. The Uwharrie is a confirmed gold-bearing river right here in the Piedmont. I also suggest you visit YouTube and watch videos on the subject. Finally, words of wisdom. Even if you don’t find gold, you will have a great time on your adventure and come away with a new appreciation for Mother Nature and the great outdoors. Panning for gold is also great exercise.
