August always feels like the start of “back-to-school” season and for some, the end of summer. But let’s be honest—we’ve still got plenty of hot days ahead of us, which means I’m holding onto pool days, beach trips and afternoons at the lake for as long as I possibly can!

As I’m writing this, I’m finally on the other side of a back injury that completely turned my world upside down. Back in mid-May, I tweaked my back during a workout. It didn’t seem like a big deal in the moment, but the next morning I woke up knowing something was definitely wrong.

After weeks of resting for a few days, trying to ease back into exercise and having the pain return almost immediately, I finally went to see a professional.

Thankfully, we have an incredible physical therapist in the same building as our gym (Tyler at Shelton Movement & Performance), and he has truly been a lifesaver.

We believe I was dealing with a bulging disc that had a significant flare-up. The prescription was simple, but incredibly difficult: let everything calm down completely before slowly introducing movement again.

For two full weeks, my world consisted of walking and physical therapy exercises. That’s it.

I couldn’t walk our dogs. I couldn’t deliver magazines. I couldn’t sit for more than 15 minutes at a time. I couldn’t do many of the everyday things I normally take for granted. For someone who loves being active, it was physically frustrating and mentally exhausting.

Good news though! We made it through.

I’m not completely pain-free yet, but I’m getting close. I’ve been able to add strict pull-ups, push-ups and a few other movements back into my workouts. While I’m still avoiding Olympic lifts and kipping gymnastics (my absolute favorites!), I’m incredibly grateful for every bit of progress. This experience has given me an entirely new appreciation for simply being able to move my body.

I always try to find the silver lining in difficult situations, and while there were

certainly (lots of) tears and moments when it all felt overwhelming, one unexpected blessing came from being forced to let go of my hyper-independence.

I’ve always been someone who wants to handle everything myself (maybe that’s an eldest daughter thing?), but this injury reminded me that it’s okay—and actually important—to let the people who love you take care of you sometimes.

Gavin has been nothing short of amazing throughout this entire process. One of our favorite things is working out together, and even when all I could do was walk and complete my PT exercises, he still walked to the gym with me every single day and somehow made them fun. He delivered magazines, walked the dogs, watered my plants, took me on ice cream dates and did everything he could to keep a smile on my face.

Our amazing Forsyth Mags family also stepped in without hesitation. Shonda, Julie, Robin, Jennie and Tamara helped with magazine deliveries while I recovered, and I truly can’t thank them enough. It was such a good reminder that asking for help doesn’t make us weak...it allows others the opportunity to show how much they care.

This month, we’re honored to feature Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC on our cover. Their mission is simple yet incredibly powerful: everyone deserves to eat. I’ve had the privilege of working with Second Harvest for many years, and every time I hear that statement, it pulls at my heart strings. s August rolls in and summer starts to wind down, some families may be hit with a feeling of guilt. Maybe you didn’t take that big vacation. Maybe you skipped the camps or never got around to the Pinterest-worthy backyard projects or games. Maybe you just feel like you “should’ve done more.”

If that’s you, take a deep breath and hear me when I say – you did enough this summer.

And, so did your family.

In a world where every scroll on social media shows sun-kissed beach trips and jam-packed calendars, it’s easy to feel like you missed the mark. But, the truth is, the little moments are what matter most.

Keeping It Real THE BRIDGE FROM DESIRE TO DESTINY

Have your prayers ever sounded like this? Mine have! We ask God for fruit, and let's be honest…we question why it's taking so long.

But, what if we keep missing a question that Heaven has been asking us all along?

"Where's your trellis?"

What if the greatest obstacle to receiving that fruit isn't His willingness to give it? What if it's our readiness to sustain it?

This spring, I planted a small garden.

(I'm no gardener, but I LOVE watching things grow!) I couldn't wait for tomatoes, zucchini and cucumbers; yet, something struck me as I pulled that luscious harvest from the vine: nobody gives any consideration to the trellis! Nobody invites friends over to admire the support system. The excitement is always about, and only about, the harvest!

But, without a trellis, fruit never reaches its full potential. The vines sprawl across the ground and become vulnerable to disease, insects and decay. That simple structure is the game-changer! It determines whether the harvest thrives or merely survives.

Friend, life works much the same way.

We spend most of our prayers asking God for fruit while giving very little attention to the structure carrying the blessing. I'm talking about daily disciplines, consistent habits, wise boundaries and faithful routines that make lasting fruit possible.

God doesn't simply want to bless us; He wants us to be able to carry the

blessing. Let's face it…without structure to sustain it, the blessing becomes a burden.

Think about it this way. Before God filled the earth with life, He first established structure. Light and darkness; land and sea; seasons and boundaries… order preceded abundance every time!

Y'all! This same principle applies today in the garden of our living! We thrive where order is present. Without good, consistent habits, our desires die on the vine! (You know it's true!)

We ask God for peace while neglecting prayer. We ask for financial freedom without practicing faithful stewardship. We desire healthy relationships while giving our attention to everything except the people we love. The truth is, God often answers our biggest prayers with that question: "Where is your trellis?" We keep asking for an increase, but God keeps asking for infrastructure! We're praying for harvest while neglecting the supports that hold the harvest up!

Desire is powerful, but desire without discipline is only wishful thinking.

Friend, "potential" is a terrible place to live. It impresses people, but it changes nothing! Potential is God's gift to you. Discipline is your gift back to God. Discipline builds the support needed for potential to bear fruit.

People often keep circling the same mountain in life because they expect success to come from excitement rather than structure. Excitement fades. Emotions fluctuate. Motivation rises and falls. Your trellis remains constant when all that wanes.

Perhaps the blessing you've been praying for isn't waiting on another miracle. Perhaps it's waiting on a stronger trellis. So, instead of asking only, "What fruit do I want from God?" ask this: "What structure am I building to sustain it?"

A 2009 University College London study found that new behaviors take an average of 66 days to become habits. In other words, transformation doesn't happen because of a moment of inspiration. It happens because of repeated structure…consistency!

Listen, God is NOT trying to withhold fruit from you. He's trying to build your ability to carry it. Your future isn't hiding in your dreams. It's hiding in your daily habits. Your habits are preaching tomorrow's sermon long before tomorrow arrives!

Show me your habits, and I'll show you your harvest.

Show me your trellis, and I'll show you your future.

AUGUST Birthstones & Birthday Flowers

ugust is one of the months with more than one birthstone – it actually has three! The primary August birthstone is peridot, sometimes called the “evening emerald.” Peridot has been a treasured gemstone for more than 3,500 years.

Its lovely green hue is so easily confused with the emerald that it is thought that Cleopatra’s legendary collection of emeralds may actually have been peridots.

When a gemstone is being formed, gas bubbles, insects, fractures or other artifacts can be trapped inside the stone. These are called inclusions, and they may be visible on the surface of the gem.

Some peridots have unique inclusions known as “lily pads.” These are fractures in the stone that look remarkably like real lily pads.

FUN FACTS ABOUT PERIDOTS

• Not all peridots are formed on Earth! Peridots have been found in meteorites and in comet dust that has fallen from space.

• Peridot is one of only a few gemstones that occur in just one color: green. Shades include lime green, yellowish green, olive green or brownish green.

• Peridots are formed deep inside the Earth.

When volcanoes erupt, peridots are sometimes found in the volcanic rocks that reach the surface.

• The finest, largest peridots come from Pakistan and are pure lime green. In the US, smaller peridots with beautiful color and clarity are found at the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona.

• Peridots symbolize strength, good fortune and peace.

OTHER AUGUST BIRTHSTONES

The secondary August birthstones are the deep red-colored spinel and the sardonyx, a kind of chalcedony that can be brown or reddish brown with bands of white. Jewelers point out that because August has more than one birthstone, consumers have a wide variety to choose from when purchasing birthstone jewelry.

THE AUGUST BIRTHDAY FLOWERS

The green of the peridot aligns with August’s birthday flowers to create a color palette that harmonizes with the natural beauty of late summer. The primary birthday flower for August is the beautiful gladiolus. Its name, inspired by its blade-shaped leaves, comes from the Latin word

gladius, which means sword. Not surprisingly, this gorgeous perennial is also known as the “sword lily.” In ancient Rome, gladiators wore this “sword lily” around their necks when entering combat, believing it would protect them and bring them victory.

In the Victorian era, gifting someone with a gladiolus was saying, “you pierce my heart.”

Today the gladiolus symbolizes integrity, honor, strength and respect, all qualities that sustain loving marriages, making the gladiolus the perfect 40th anniversary flower.

The gladiolus blooms make their appearance from bottom to top, with pink, purple, yellow, red, coral or white florets opening sequentially in a display of glorious color. Stalks typically grow to a height of two to five feet, each displaying six to 20 individual florets.

The secondary August birthday flower is the poppy, a vibrant wildflower. Poppies symbolize imagination, prosperity, sympathy and strength. After World War I, poppies also came to symbolize remembrance. Poppy seeds can lay dormant in the earth for as long as 80 years, but when the soil around them is disturbed, they spring to life. Following World War I, when the churned up earth of the post-war Flanders, Belgium battlefield burst into fields of blooms of poppies, this already-beloved flower became an enduring symbol of fallen soldiers.

Poppy blooms can be vibrant red, orange, yellow, pink, purple or white. The blooms, attached to thin stalks, are crepe-papery and delicate. The seed pods of the poppy are distinctive, and each plant can produce as many as 60,000 tiny seeds. Poppy seeds are a popular baking ingredient. rising senior female high school students in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher, demonstrate good moral character, attend scheduled workshops and activities, participate in service projects, and complete required consent and release forms. The contestant crowned Queen Juneteenth is also expected to attend a Historically Black College or University, reflecting the pageant’s commitment to supporting HBCUs and increasing college access for young women.

ast May, I attended a Soul “Medicine” and Clothing Swap at 18 Springs, a community healing center in Winston-Salem. I’d gone to the previous year’s swap, not knowing what to expect, and ended up loving it so much I kept checking 18 Springs’ calendar in the hopes they’d have another one!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re not supposed to swap medicine! And that’s true, don’t swap prescribed or even over-thecounter medicine. The “medicine” at the swap wasn’t actual medicine but things that have soothed your soul that you’d like to pass along to someone else. Think books, art, oracle cards, tarot, jewelry, tea, stones, essential oil, etc. Anything that’s spoken to you at one point in your life that you’ve outgrown but feel would help another person.

What do you think you might’ve brought to the swap? What’s been medicine for your soul?

I brought animal figurines, one of a wolf and one of a chipmunk, that I thought would work well to decorate an altar, home or office. And, in return, I brought home a book about mandalas and a book about goddesses.

So far, what I’ve found about these swaps has been that there’s always something that not only resonates with me, but that speaks to where I am in life or where I’d like to be, as well. I’ve wanted to learn more about goddesses and mandalas for a while, so I smiled to myself when I saw the books displayed on the table. It was one of those moments where it felt like the universe was on my side, leading me exactly where I needed to be. Can you remember a time where you felt like that?

There were other pieces that spoke to me, such as a green long sleeved shirt with branches and the word “live” on it. It was well worn, but beautiful; one of those pieces that makes you stop and stare, really think about the message. Similarly, there was a black short sleeved t-shirt with the words “how the light gets in” printed in white. This one felt even more profound, and I stood there holding it, trying to figure out what it was from since it had the

year 2025 on it. Turns out, it’s from a festival, hosted by the Institute of Art and Ideas, that celebrates philosophy and music.

Speaking of philosophy, this year’s swap was a good opportunity to reflect on what kind of clothes represent who I am and who I’m becoming, as well as what kinds of “medicine” my soul needs – now, not years ago. What I’ve outgrown but once loved could fit someone else perfectly. And, something that once helped someone else could also help me.

While this year’s swap at 18 Springs is over, there may be other swaps in the community you could visit and/or donate to if you’re interested! These swaps are almost always free of charge, and often, you don’t have to donate to take something home with you, though donating is typically best.

If you don’t want to wait for someone else to organize a swap, you could always trade with family or friends! What “medicine” could you offer to help someone? What kind of “medicine” do you need?

What clothes have you outgrown that you could trade for something that fits who you are now? Even if you don’t swap or donate, these questions are worth exploring every so often to be your most authentic self.

What to Do When the Stock Market Drops

W

hen the stock market drops, the instinct is to act: sell before things get worse, sit in cash until conditions stabilize, and buy back in when the dust settles. It feels logical, but it almost never works out that way.

Over the years, we’ve seen this pattern repeat across a variety of investors. They might have had solid savings, a long runway to retirement, and the discipline to contribute consistently. But when things got volatile, they panicked. They sold late and only got back in after most of the gains had already passed.

THE COST OF REACTING

These patterns show up in the data, too. DALBAR has tracked the gap between market returns and what investors actually earn for decades. The numbers are consistent: investors who reacted to market conditions accumulated roughly 22% less total wealth over a 20-year period than those who simply held their position.1 The shortfall traces back to the moves made when markets got rough.

WHY KNOWING BETTER ISN’T ENOUGH

The investors in the DALBAR data who underperformed the market weren’t, on the whole, people who ignored financial fundamentals. Many of them knew the standard advice: stay the course and let the market recover. What they couldn’t overcome was the feeling, in a moment of genuine volatility, that doing nothing was the same as being reckless. A falling market generates more engagement than a stable one, and the gnawing sense that “this time it’s different” can be hard to ignore when your own savings are on the line.

IS A FINANCIAL ADVISOR WORTH IT?

Most people evaluate a financial advisor on their portfolio recommendations, investment performance, or market insights.

Those things matter, but they’re not where the return on a good advisor relationship tends to show up. The real value is when a client wants to act and their advisor gently reminds them to slow down and think through whether they should.

In every significant downturn we’ve seen, the clients who came out whole were the ones who stayed calm and stuck to the plan.

Knowing what to do when the stock market drops, it turns out, isn’t really about doing anything. It’s about having someone who helps you hold to your plan when holding feels hardest.

Healing Beyond Treatment

remedies that could safely support my body throughout treatment. To their credit, my oncologist and pharmacist were very open to reviewing supplements and ingredients to ensure there were no dangerous interactions with chemotherapy.

ne of the most surprising parts of my cancer journey was realizing how little guidance was offered around actively supporting the body during chemotherapy beyond simply managing discomfort.

Modern cancer treatment is remarkably advanced and lifesaving, and I am deeply grateful for the care I received; but much of conventional treatment understandably focuses on destroying cancer cells and minimizing side effects. Patients are often sent home with an entire collection of medications for nausea, constipation, fatigue, aches, pain and other symptoms that can accompany chemotherapy. We are advised to rest, conserve energy and continue eating our usual diets. During infusions, it is not uncommon to see soda, cookies and processed snacks offered to patients simply because calories are considered important.

I quickly realized that if I wanted to truly support my body through treatment, I needed to become much more intentional about my overall health.

Before sharing my experience, I want to make one thing clear – I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advice. Every cancer diagnosis, treatment protocol and patient experience is different. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and medications are often necessary and lifesaving. What I am sharing here are holistic and supportive practices that personally helped me alongside conventional treatment.

Since there was very little guidance about nutrition, supplements or natural ways to support the body, I researched these topics carefully while keeping my oncology team informed. I also sought guidance from holistic and homeopathic practitioners who helped recommend herbal and homeopathic

Before treatment even started, I completed two weeks of a fruit-focused detox along with herbal support aimed at kidney and adrenal health. It felt important to prepare my body as much as possible for what it was about to endure.

As treatment progressed, I incorporated daily holistic practices that supported circulation, immunity, stress reduction and recovery.

These included lymphatic massage, yoga, dry brushing, breathwork, meditation, gentle exercise, vibration plate therapy, acupressure points and long walks outdoors. Time in nature became medicine in its own right.

Nutrition also became far more intentional than it had ever been before. For the first time in my life, I truly began paying attention to fiber, protein and vitamins in everything I ate.

Supporting gastrointestinal health became a major priority. I focused heavily on living foods, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp hearts, almonds and pistachios found their way into almost everything I ate. I began baking sourdough bread using sprouted wheat and making protein-rich pancakes with vegan protein powders.

I also made fermented foods a daily priority because of their probiotic and prebiotic benefits. Vegan drinking yogurts, pickles, fermented vegetables and homemade dishes rich in beneficial bacteria became regular staples in our kitchen. Dates were the only sweet treat I allowed myself.

One particularly meaningful ritual was drinking asparagus broth daily which my husband prepared. A friend told him a story about his aunt, who years earlier had been in hospice with cancer, when another woman visited her carrying homemade asparagus broth. That visitor explained she had once been a patient there herself and believed the

broth had helped her recover. She continued bringing it regularly, and remarkably, more than 20 years later, my friend’s aunt is still alive and remains the biggest advocate of daily asparagus consumption. Whether scientific or symbolic, the story stayed with us, and the ritual itself became deeply comforting and hopeful.

I also became far more aware of environmental toxins. I cleaned out all makeup and skincare products using Google Lens, asking a simple question – does this contain anything harmful? We switched household cleaning supplies to more natural alternatives and became more mindful of the products we brought into our home.

Essential oils became another source of comfort throughout treatment. During winter, I diffused organic pine and fir oils, which made the house feel calming and restorative.

Lavender helped with sleep, peppermint eased headaches and black seed oil became something I used topically for cuts, blisters and irritated skin.

When it came to supplements, I remained cautious and collaborative with my medical team. The general guidance I followed was to avoid most supplements during the first week after chemotherapy, when treatment was strongest, and then incorporate supportive supplements during the second and third weeks between infusions. These included omega supplements, magnesium, black seed oil, soursop and some homeopathic remedies.

In short, this experience has reinforced my belief that healing is not passive. Even during illness, there are meaningful ways we can participate in supporting our bodies, internally and externally.

None of these practices replaced medical treatment. Rather, they helped me feel stronger, more empowered and more connected to my own healing. I am so thankful to have experienced that the body always possesses an incredible desire to repair, restore and move toward balance whenever we give it the support to do so.

There are seasons when moving forward feels natural, and there are seasons when every step takes more effort than the last.

I’m a planner. I like a plan, a timeline, and a clear path forward. But if life has taught me anything, it’s that even the best plans can be interrupted. A visit to the hospital shifts your perspective. Someone you love gets sick. An opportunity you’ve worked hard for doesn’t happen. Just when you think you’ve found your rhythm, life reminds you that the journey rarely follows the path you imagined.

I’ve learned that moving forward isn’t about having all the answers. It’s a decision.

It’s deciding that this season won’t define you; it will develop you. It’s trusting that every setback has something to teach you and that every detour has the potential to lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.

Sometimes moving forward means having the conversation you’ve been avoiding. Sometimes it means asking for help. Sometimes it means letting go of what no longer aligns with your purpose. And sometimes, it simply means taking the next right step.

If you’re leading anything, a family, a team, a business, or a nonprofit you know the weight leadership carries. People depend on you.

The decisions aren’t always easy, and the path isn’t always clear. But I’ve learned you don’t have to have every answer to keep moving forward. You simply have to take the next step with courage.

Don’t spend so much time looking at what didn’t happen that you miss what still can. Instead, ask yourself, “What’s the next decision that moves me forward?”

When I look back over my own journey, I can see that the moments I questioned most were often the moments God used to prepare me for what was next. His plan didn’t always look like mine, but it always led me where I needed to be.

You don’t have to have the entire path figured out. You just must be willing to take the next step.

Because forward isn’t a feeling.

Celebrating 100 Years of the Old Clemmons School Honoring the Community and the 70th Anniversary of the Class of 1956

his September, generations of former students, families and community members will gather at Historic Broyhill for a celebration that is about far more than a building. The Old Clemmons School will mark its 100th anniversary, while the Class of 1956, the last graduating class before the school transitioned from a high school to an elementary school, celebrates its 70th reunion.

For many, the event is a chance to reconnect with classmates and relive cherished memories. For others, it is an opportunity to discover the story of a school that helped shape Clemmons into the community it is today.

“The school was a part of who people were,” said Mark Cheek of the Old Clemmons School Halls of History Committee. “Students took pride in it because their whole lives and the community revolved around the school.”

Opened on September 17, 1925, the school quickly became the centerpiece of Clemmons. With its impressive 345-foot frontage, it was the largest and most prominent building in town. At a time before television, cell phones and the internet, the school served as an educational, social and cultural hub.

Church services filled the auditorium on Sundays. School plays and Christmas pageants brought families together. Athletic events united the community, and the school’s orchestra became a source of local pride, winning six consecutive state championships between 1932 and 1937.

“Schools like this were not built; they were born. The community grew around the school and became a part of everyone’s life,” said Mark.

MORE THAN A SCHOOL

Over the decades, the school evolved alongside the community.

Originally serving grades one through 11, the school expanded to include a 12th grade in 1945. It remained a combined elementary and high school until 1956, when Southwest Forsyth High School opened and Clemmons became an elementary school.

Even after the high school years ended, the campus remained a gathering place. Youth baseball, football and community activities continued to thrive on the athletic fields where many children (continued on page 34)

Today, the committee continues to collect photographs, memorabilia and stories while expanding its website, OldClemmonsSchoolHoH.org, to preserve the school’s history for future generations.

ONE LAST HURRAH The September 19th celebration will feature historical displays, photographs, memorabilia, refreshments and opportunities for storytelling.

A “Memorial/Honorium” table will honor alumni, passed or living, while visitors can browse displays highlighting the school’s rich history.

For many alumni, the gathering represents a final reunion with lifelong friends.

“The youngest graduates are now 88 years young. A few have told us this will be their last hurrah,” Mark commented. (continued from page 32)

followed in the footsteps of their parents who were graduates of Clemmons High School in the 1950s.

As classmates reconnect, Mark says the emotions are unmistakable. “There’s a real glow in their faces.

They’re transported back to a different time. Sometimes there’s a tear or two, but it’s a pleasure to witness,” said Mark.

The school’s impact extended far beyond academics. Students participated in organizations such as the Key Club and Hi-Y Club, learning the value of civic responsibility and service.

The event is open not only to alumni, but to anyone interested in the history of Clemmons, as well. Mark believes local history matters now more than ever, especially as communities continue to grow and change.

“Everyone knew everyone. Graduating classes were often fewer than 40 students, and students were involved in multiple activities. They learned civic duty, pride and how to support their community,” Mark stated.

“One cannot know who they are if they do not know from where they came,” he said. “Knowing and honoring your local history gives you a sense of belonging and pride.”

That legacy is still visible today. A display near the memorabilia cabinet lists all 875 graduates of Clemmons High School, highlighting generations of families who passed through its halls.

When attendees walk through the doors of Historic Broyhill this September, Mark hopes they experience one feeling above all else.

“I hope they feel,” he said, “that they are home.”

PRESERVING A COMMUNITY LEGACY

The event will be held on September 19th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is open to the entire Clemmons Community. It will be a casual walk-in style atmosphere. For more information on the event, contact Mark Cheek at oldclemmonsschoolhoh@gmail.com.

The idea for the Old Clemmons School Halls of History Committee began during the 60th reunion of the Class of 1956 in 2016.

“A small group of graduates realized the history of the school was being lost as more of their classmates passed away. They decided to pool their memorabilia and preserve it for future generations,” commented Mark.

That effort eventually led to the creation of the Memorabilia Cabinet and historical displays housed in the east wing of Historic Broyhill.

Among the treasured items are class rings, diplomas, championship trophies, a signed baseball from the 1950 state championship team and a letter sweater. Yet one artifact consistently draws the most attention. “Everybody remembers the 1956 prom dress,” Mark said.

The committee also uncovered fascinating pieces of school history along the way. In its early years, Clemmons High School’s academic standards were so highly regarded that graduates could enter college without taking entrance exams. The original wooden floors were polished with motor oil, student desks were once nailed to the floor and local benefactor William Neal Reynolds contributed half the funding needed to build the school’s athletic complex.

I recently celebrated my 34th birthday and, although I’m not where 17-year-old me anticipated being at this age (married with possible children and feeling much more settled), I can’t say I have a tangible reason to be dissatisfied. I have a stable career, a vehicle that I love, a cuddly cat and family and a few close friends to keep me company. Working multiple jobs to maintain a comfortable life as a single person with the cost of living in 2026 has enforced a strong work ethic within me, and I am sometimes impressed by my ability to manage it all once I slow down and realize everything that I juggle. I know there are single mothers, fathers and families that juggle just as much with children to take care of as well, nevertheless, I still have a lot on my plate.

Being “independent,” as some may call it, for an extended amount of time does have its downsides. Feeling chronically uptight and unable to relax, I am currently writing this article on vacation in a condo in Kauai realizing I cannot force myself to turn my brain off in one of the world’s most appropriate places to chill out. In my head, I have a constant timeline of events and plans. How much time do I have to enjoy my morning coffee before I shower for the day and drive to a beach that I am scheduling myself to enjoy? How early do I need to wake

up to ensure I can maximize my time on the island? What can I eat for each meal that ensures I enjoy my vacation meals without gaining extra vacation weight?

I recognize how fortunate I am for this to be one of my biggest issues at the current moment. The majority of people are battling chronic illness, financial distress, martial problems, etc. while I am struggling to remember that I am in Kauai to destress and give my nervous system a break after a year of juggling multiple jobs on top of grieving the failure of a close friendship and romantic relationship. In the big scheme of things, I’m pretty lucky, and that luck can run out at any time. Given this knowledge, it is more important for me to learn to be present and enjoy the good times while they are graciously given to me before the tables turn inevitably in life. The last thing I want is for life’s problems to rear their heads in a serious way, only for me to look back and want to slap myself for not enjoying the good times while I had them.

For someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety since I left the womb, quieting the worries and what-ifs in my brain long enough to soak in what’s happening around me is an all-consuming task. Worrying is so second nature to me

that I don’t even realize I’m doing it. Not everyone struggles with this. I look around and see families going with the flow, not worried about making dinner reservations, planning or waking up early enough to get a parking spot. Lots of people enjoy their days without making Excel spreadsheets and itineraries, and I often envy them. Even when things don’t go exactly how they would like, they still make lemonade from lemons. In fact, what’s a “lemon” to me isn’t always a lemon to everyone else.

What’s reassuring is that I am becoming more and more aware of my tendency to live for the future or past instead of the present.

Control issues permeate so many facets of my life that it’s important for me to let go and trust that the idea in my head of a “perfect day” is just an idea in my head and that it’s possible for things to work out differently than I have planned. If I can’t get a parking spot at the beach I am scheduled to visit today, maybe it’s for the best – maybe there’s a better beach down the road that I would be pleasantly surprised by. Remembering that I am only a human and am not omniscient and don’t always know what’s around the corner is one of my biggest flaws. In the height of my anxiety and planning, I am putting my best foot forward in learning to let go and trust God’s timing.

Step Up Speak Out Walk for Change Everyone deserves peace, respect, and safety in their relationships.

Domestic violence often starts with what seems like small, controlling behaviors. It can escalate over time, developing into a pattern when one partner or family member exercises power and control over another.

Unfortunately, it often keeps getting worse.

Family Services Child Advocacy Center Director Ernest Britton shares, “When you don’t have a safe place to just relax, to just take a breath, you know, that is very devastating.”

Sandra* and her daughter experienced this firsthand as survivors of a physically and emotionally abusive situation at home.

When she decided to leave, Sandra was able to find respite at the Family Services emergency domestic violence shelter for two months.

While staying with us, she found a full-time job and worked with our Case Manager to secure an apartment with federal rental assistance in a safer part of town while her daughter started at a new school. Thanks to a slightly higher wage, she was able to purchase a car, which helps her with her independence and family transportation needs, allowing them to thrive.

Around 8,000 reports of domestic abuse are documented in Forsyth County annually.

Many of these victims sought refuge at the Family Services’ domestic violence shelter. Currently, the shelter operates at maximum capacity.

Family Services provides resources for individuals and families coping with trauma from childhood abuse, domestic abuse, sexual assault, human trafficking, and elder abuse – addressing the changing needs of our community.

Survivors are provided with resources, dignity, and hope to reclaim their lives on their journey.

Today, Sandra is embracing her new life. “I’m no longer looking over my shoulder. I feel like I can finally breathe,” she says.

Cymbre Cooke | Watercolor Portraitist This month’s featured artist, Cymbre Cooke, is a watercolor portrait artist who transforms beloved pets, cherished homes and life’s most meaningful places into timeless keepsakes. With more than a decade spent refining her craft, Cymbre has mastered keeping the heart of her clients’ stories and special moments at the center of her art.

How would you describe your work?

I primarily paint custom watercolor portraits of pets and homes. I also paint portraits of family members and special moments like wedding venues, proposals or date spots.

What was your journey to developing your artistic skills like?

like a creative jumpstart for my brain shouting,“Get off the couch! Try something new!”

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?

Seeing a small part of peoples’ lives always leaves you with sweet stories, and I have many! Recently, a customer reached out for a memorial commission for her sister’s dog. The pictures were fuzzy, so we were working out kinks. Shortly after, her sister said she found me through a completely different venue to memorialize the same dog (with lots of great pictures, too). It was the first time it happened, and I had to navigate the surprise with one and the “I’m working on your portrait” with the other. It was a really funny, sweet moment.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I studied art in high school and college, experimenting with all kinds of media before finding my love for watercolor. After friends commissioned paintings of their pets and first home, I spent the next 10 years taking more commissions and refining my watercolor skills, learning techniques for painting fur, details on homes and shadows through lots of practice and making mistakes. It’s cool to see the growth between my first pieces and the work I’m doing now.

Right now, I’m getting back into taking commissions after taking some time off. I think the thing I’m most excited about is just getting back into it and hearing from new and former customers. My busiest time of year is always around Christmas, so there are lots of good memories and cozy routines associated with doing this work that I’m always happy to fall back into.

How have you grown, personally, as an artist?

I’ve really learned to do art for the sake of doing art, even when no one’s ordering or you don’t feel like doing it. As a teacher, I see the full time artists and think, “I can’t do that because I’m committing my time to XYZ,” but I have to stop that thinking and know I create art because I love art. So, if you’re just trying things and end up with something goofy that no one will see, at the end of the day…you do the art for you. You get better with every project and won’t regret spending the time on it.

I think the biggest piece has been my confidence as an artist. My art has always been for me, so when I started doing portraits and other small projects for friends, I felt like I’d be half apologizing as I gave them finished commissions. Now, I’ve found a lane in painting pets and homes and have worked really hard to do them so that I can feel proud of sharing my work publicly and charging what my pieces are worth.

What is your secret for carving out time to truly be creative?

As a full time teacher, this is hard for me! My downtime is sacred, and it’s often hard to feel inspired or creative, especially between projects. If I don’t have a watercolor project, I dabble in other art forms to remind myself that art isn’t always for a job. When I come across small businesses and local artists on social media, I often find myself being most inspired, be it a linocut artist or sticker maker. It’s

You loved this person. You still do. You always will.

Death doesn’t change the bond you made; it doesn’t change the moments you shared that made you who you are. It doesn’t take away all the gorgeous ways they touched, and will always touch, your life. Neither does grief or loss or feeling like the world will never be the same without them.

Because it won’t be. Even if no one else sees it and goes on with their lives as if nothing happened, you know who they were, to you and to the world. They mattered. And, so do you.

Let yourself grieve, and know it’s normal to not want to let go.

Did you know dolphins and whales grieve their dead, as well as other animals? Orcas carry their deceased calves across the ocean on their nose for weeks, and their pod stays nearby to support them.

Dolphins slow their speed and make distress calls to help mothers cope with their loss as they carry their dead calves. Elephants hold vigils by forming a circle around their family member’s remains to protect them from predators, and they return years later to touch their skull or tusks. And foxes bury their mates and cubs, but before, they take turns lying with their lost loved ones. Magpies put twigs and leaves around their deceased as tribute, and after honoring them, they fly in procession.

How do you grieve your loved ones? You don’t have to carry their body across the sea, you don’t have to see their body at all if it’s too much. But, do you have a grief ritual, something you can do to honor your loved one while also honoring yourself?

If you don’t, or if you do but it isn’t working this time, that’s okay. You can try something else, whatever feels right for now and helps you take care of yourself moving forward.

But, please remember, you don’t have to grieve alone. You’re not alone. You have people in your life who love you enough to carry you across the

ocean, to make distress calls with you, to hold vigils, however many you need. You have people in your life who want you to keep living, enough to go with you to visit your loved one, to help you lay them to rest, to bring food and flowers, to show you all the beautiful ways you’re still alive.

Let people be there for you, okay? And let yourself be honest about how you’re feeling.

No one expects you to be okay right now.

Just know you eventually will be.

Grieve, remember your loved one however you need. But, please also let yourself be more than grief. Let grief be beside you instead of in front of you. Eventually, animals leave their dead, even though it’s hard, even though they love them, even though they don’t yet know how they’ll live without them.

They leave because they know it’s what they must do to survive. We must do the same.

We must eventually keep moving forward to survive, knowing that we’re not leaving our loved ones behind; we’re continuing to live in their honor.

Survive. But also keep living. It’s what they would want for you. It’s what I want for you.

Like Mary Oliver says in her poem “Wild Geese,” You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees or a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

Let the soft animal of your body love who you love, including yourself.

SHATTER THE CEILINGS, BREAK THE BIAS: Understanding the Barriers Women Still Face at Work

We’ve come a long way.

COMMON BARRIERS WOMEN FACE

There was a time when women could legally be denied jobs for being pregnant, had limited protections against discrimination and often couldn’t even get credit in their own name. Those barriers were obvious.

1. Structural Barriers

Today, many of the barriers women face are much more subtle, but they still exist.

In many organizations, advancement happens through unwritten rules. If employees do not know what it takes to move forward, they are at a disadvantage from the start.

Women now make up nearly half of the workforce and earn the majority of college degrees, yet leadership advancement still tells a different story.

Women remain underrepresented in executive leadership, continue to earn less on average for similar work and are often promoted at slower rates than men.

The issue is not capability but that opportunity does not always flow equally.

THE MODERN GLASS CEILING

The “glass ceiling” refers to invisible barriers that limit advancement despite talent, qualifications and performance.

Unlike obvious discrimination, these barriers are often difficult to identify because they show up quietly through systems, assumptions, culture and access.

Sometimes it’s not what’s said. It’s what doesn’t happen, like: Not being included in conversations.

Not being considered for opportunities.

Not receiving the same visibility.

Not having the same access to influential relationships.

Many women experience these barriers without fully realizing what they are navigating.

Structural barriers involve how organizations are set up including unclear promotions paths, inconsistent expectations, informal decision-making and promotions based on relationships rather than clear criteria.

One of the most powerful things women can do is ask questions: •

What does advancement look like here?

•

What skills are needed for leadership?

•

How are promotion decisions made?

Often, confidence is built through action, and small shifts matter. This might involve speaking up more in meetings, asking for opportunities and becoming more comfortable with visibility.

4. Access Barriers

Opportunities often flow through relationships. If you are not included in key conversations or networks, you may never even hear about opportunities.

Clarity creates opportunity.

Seeking and building relationships with others who will advocate for you in rooms you are not in helps create access.

2. Cultural Barriers

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Women often navigate double standards that men may never encounter.

Assertive men may be viewed as strong leaders, while assertive women may be labeled difficult.

Direct communication from men may be seen as confidence, while women are sometimes criticized for being “too much.”

This conversation is not about blaming organizations, men or women. It is about awareness and action.

The good news is that many of these barriers can be challenged through intentional action, stronger awareness and supportive leadership.

Even phrases like “culture fit” can unintentionally exclude people who do not match existing leadership norms or relationships.

And you likely have more influence than you think.

Over time, these cultural dynamics can lead women to second-guess themselves, hold back ideas, avoid visibility and shrink to stay comfortable.

Awareness matters because you cannot navigate dynamics you do not recognize.

3. Internal Barriers

Many women carry internal barriers shaped by years of experiences, feedback, expectations and workplace environments.

This often shows up as over-preparing, perfectionism, fear of being perceived negatively and reluctance to speak up.

Research consistently shows that men are more likely to apply for opportunities when they meet some of the qualifications, while women often wait until they meet nearly all of them.

The ceiling does not shatter all at once.

It cracks with every conversation, every opportunity, every courageous step and every person willing to challenge the way things have always been done.

wenty years ago, Chef Jeff Bacon CEC CCA AAC saw an opportunity to use food as a pathway to something larger.

His vision for what would become Second Harvest’s Providence program began with culinary training but was always about something larger: using the power of food to create opportunity, strengthen communities, and help people build brighter futures.

What began in 2006 as Second Harvest’s Triad Community Kitchen has evolved into the Food Bank’s multifaceted Providence program, which creates pathways to employment, prepares nutritious meals for children and seniors, provides catering services, and strengthens communities across Northwest North Carolina.

Since opening its doors, Providence has celebrated more than 1,000 culinary training graduates, prepared more than a million meals for children and seniors, and expanded into one of Second Harvest’s most innovative mission-driven programs.

As Providence celebrates its twentieth anniversary, the milestone offers a chance to reflect on the vision that started it all, the people who have shaped its journey, and the possibilities that lie ahead.

For Chef Bacon, reaching this milestone is both humbling and inspiring.

“The greatest service you can be to someone isn’t sharing your gifts — it’s helping them uncover their own,” Bacon said. “That’s what we’ve been up to, and that will continue.”

BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION

Today, Second Harvest’s Providence program is led by a team committed to honoring that legacy while helping shape the future.

For Heather Martin, who assumed leadership of Providence earlier this year following Chef Jeff Bacon’s retirement, the anniversary represents far more than a milestone. It marks the beginning of the program’s next chapter.

“For nearly 11 years, I’ve had a front row seat, witnessing how good life can be when it’s lived for others,” said Martin. “I’ve had people with my last name die from addiction, with no purpose. I believe that because of Providence, many people will never suffer that pain and instead will discover their fullest purpose in life. I’m so grateful to be part of what comes next.”

Over the past two decades, Providence has continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of the communities Second Harvest serves.

That spirit of innovation continues today.

As part of its 20th anniversary, Second Harvest is engaging alumni, employer partners, supporters, and community stakeholders in conversations designed to help shape the future of Providence.

The feedback is helping identify opportunities to strengthen the student experience, expand partnerships, explore new mission-supporting earned revenue opportunities, and build on Providence’s growing role in improving community health through initiatives such as Food Is Medicine.

“We’re hearing from our community that they like what they’ve seen, but they want more,” Martin said. “We’ve been part of a miracle, and we’re always gratified but never satisfied.”

“The opportunities to expand our reach by feeding not just opportunity but health, specifically through our work in the Food is Medicine realm, is an exciting piece of our next. We have the most amazing boots on the ground, and they’re pointed in the right direction. Stay tuned!”

DISCOVERING WHAT’S POSSIBLE

Ask Chef Charlie Sellers what keeps him coming back each day, and the answer is rarely about recipes or techniques.

It is about watching people discover what they are capable of.

As Senior Director of Culinary Education and Catering, Sellers has witnessed students build confidence, develop new skills, and pursue opportunities that once felt out of reach.

“We have a program called Grace that works with people of different abilities to build skills and confidence in the kitchen,” Chef Sellers explained. “A young man named Hayzea attended regularly and eventually enrolled in the culinary training program.

I remember he was so nervous and concerned about completing the criteria for his practical exam. Today, Hayzea has come full circle, returning to teach students in the GRACE program.”

Stories like Hayzea’s have played out hundreds of times over the last twenty years.

Working alongside schools, senior nutrition providers, healthcare organizations, and community partners, Caudill is helping explore new ways nutritious food can improve health outcomes while expanding Second Harvest’s impact throughout the region.

“We’ve all heard the saying, ‘We are what we eat,’ and the evidence continues to show just how true that is,” said Caudill.

“Access to healthy food is one of the most important factors influencing a person’s health. Today, Community Meals is uniquely positioned to help bridge nutrition and healthcare.

Through medically tailored meals and strong community partnerships, we have the opportunity not only to nourish people but to improve health and strengthen communities.”

ONE MISSION

Whether helping someone prepare for a career, ensuring a child has a nutritious summer meal, supporting an older adult, or advancing Food is Medicine through healthcare partnerships, Second Harvest’s Providence program remains rooted in the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive.

As Providence enters its third decade, the question is no longer whether the program can change lives. Twenty years of stories have provided the answer.

The question now is how it can create even greater opportunity and impact in the years ahead.

Students arrive with different experiences, goals, and circumstances. They leave with new skills, greater confidence, and expanded possibilities.

NOURISHING COMMUNITIES

For Chef David Swing, Providence Chef and culinary lead for Second Harvest’s Community Meals program, every meal tells a story.

Each day, he and his team prepare thousands of meals for children, seniors, and neighbors living with disabilities throughout Northwest North Carolina.

For Swing, however, the work extends far beyond the kitchen. It is about showing up consistently for people. It is about care, dignity, and connection.

“So many of our neighbors are facing difficult circumstances, and in Second Harvest’s Community Meals kitchen, we have the rewarding opportunity each day to put a little extra love into every meal we prepare for children and seniors,” said Chef Swing. “We may never meet the people who receive those meals, but we know each one represents someone who deserves to feel cared for.”

That same commitment guides Nicole Caudill, Director of Community Meals, who oversees the program’s daily operations while helping shape its future.

As Community Meals has grown, so have the opportunities to serve.

Forsyth Firsts Salem Cotton Manufacturing Co.

WEAVING A COMMUNITY

Long before Winston-Salem became known for tobacco, its path toward industrialization was shaped by textiles.

When the Moravian community was established in 1766, spinning and weaving were vital household skills.

Records from that year show that Gotfried Praezel, a trained weaver, installed a hand loom in the very first house built along Salem’s main street. By the late 18th century, textile work was firmly embedded in daily life. Historical records demonstrate that cloth production was a cornerstone of the community throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. Even after Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin in 1793 greatly increased the availability of raw cotton, textile production in Salem remained dependent on hand labor. A modest step toward mechanization came in 1815, when Van Nieman Zevely, a cabinetmaker, built a dam (across Peter’s Creek near presentday North Cherry Street) that powered a water-driven wool-carding machine – the first known example in the area. Although this innovation represented an early step toward industrialization, true mass textile production would not reach Salem for another two decades.

CRAFT TRADITIONS BECOME INDUSTRY

Born in 1812 and educated for the Moravian ministry, Francis Levan Fries seemed an unlikely candidate to pioneer industrial manufacturing. Yet he was sent to New England to study textile production firsthand and returned with knowledge that would directly influence the future mill’s design and operation. The move toward mass textile production began in 1835, when Fries and 30 Moravian businessmen raised approximately $50,000 to organize the

Salem Manufacturing Company. Working with fellow investors and stockholders, he convened the company’s first organizational meeting on July 8, 1836 to plan construction of a textile factory on the western edge of Salem, on today’s Brookstown Avenue. This decision marked Salem’s first deliberate move away from household craft production toward industrial manufacturing, creating the city’s first major textile mill and positioning it among the earliest large-scale textile enterprises in the south.

BRIGHT BEGINNINGS DIM QUICKLY

Completed in 1836, the three-story brick mill was distinguished by its monitor roof and cupola. Inside, spinning frames and machinery brought from Baltimore marked Salem’s shift toward industrial manufacturing.

Under the direction of Superintendent F. L. Fries, the operation quickly gained regional significance, and Fries himself emerged as a leading industrial figure. The development of dedicated mill housing for families, single workers and supervisors soon followed, making factory labor a permanent and organized feature of Salem’s economy.

Unfortunately, despite its early promise, the Salem Cotton Manufacturing Company struggled to retain its success. From the outset, limited capital, competition from more established textile centers, inconsistent access to skilled labor and challenges selling yarn in a saturated market hindered profitability. By the late 1840s, financial pressures intensified, and the sale of the mill in 1854 brought Moravian ownership to an end.

SHIFTING FORTUNES

Even though the original company declined, F.L. Fries prospered elsewhere. He left the company and established the Salem Woolen Mill. After the original cotton mill passed through multiple owners, it was eventually converted into the Wachovia Flour Mills in 1856 – an early example of the building’s

remarkable adaptability. By the mid-19th century, Fries and his brother, Henry, oversaw a growing industrial enterprise that would, in time, reabsorb the original Salem mill building. Francis died in 1863, but Henry’s technical expertise enabled the business to continue, and with the help of his nephews, it endured well into the next century.

In 1880, Francis’ son, also named Francis Fries, revived cotton manufacturing on the site by constructing a three-story brick factory adjacent to the original 1836 structure, known as Arista Cotton Mill. In 1903, Arista Mills Company was formed, and the expanded operation continued textile production into the 1920s.

A LIVING LANDMARK

Following its closure, the complex found new uses, first serving the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation in the 1940s and later functioning as warehouse space for Lentz during the 1970s. A multi-million dollar historic restoration of the property began in 1978 and, today, the remaining mill buildings form part of the Historic Brookstown Inn. This thoughtfully rehabilitated complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Forsyth County Local Historic Landmark. The original 1836 structure serves as a tangible reminder of Salem’s earliest ambitions for industrial aspirations.

Young, Driven and Building Their Future Two Local Entrepreneurs Proving Age is No Barrier to Success

While many teenagers spend their free time scrolling through social media or playing video games, two young entrepreneurs in our community are spending theirs building businesses, serving customers and learning skills that many adults spend years trying to master.

At just 13 and 18 years old, Evan Roberts and Shepherd Robinson have already discovered something powerful – success often starts with a willingness to work hard.

STARTING SMALL, DREAMING BIG

For 13-year-old Evan Roberts, entrepreneurship began with a bucket, a sponge and a love for clean cars.

Evan recently launched Evan's Car Detailing, a mobile detailing business that provides interior and exterior cleaning services. What started as washing his parents' vehicles quickly turned into something more.

"When I cleaned my mom's van for the first time, I really enjoyed it," Evan stated. "I knew I would enjoy doing this."

Inspired by his father to get started at a young age, Evan began investing in quality cleaning products and reaching out to potential customers through church connections, friends' parents and flyers.

His goal is simple but ambitious – build a business that allows him to enjoy financial freedom throughout high school and eventually college.

"I've learned that I need to be dedicated and willing to put in the work because I know I'll get rewarded for it in the end," Evan said.

TURNING LAWNS INTO A GROWING ENTERPRISE

For Shepherd Robinson, entrepreneurship started at the age of 12 with a lawn mower and a willingness to knock on doors.

Now 18 and a recent high school graduate, Shepherd has transformed that early side hustle into a thriving landscaping and junk removal business that offers everything from lawn maintenance and mulching to tree removal and hardscaping projects.

By age 14, he was already mowing multiple lawns in his neighborhood. A brief stint working at a fast food restaurant at age 15 confirmed what he had begun to suspect. "After working there, I quickly learned the value of working for yourself and the unlimited opportunity it provides," Shepherd commented.

Today, his business includes multiple trucks, trailers, commercial equipment and even contractors who help keep projects moving.

LEARNING THROUGH CHALLENGES

Both young business owners have quickly learned that entrepreneurship involves much more than simply doing the work.

the mistake, he immediately informed the homeowner and developed a plan to repair the damage. "Anything that happens is my responsibility," Shepherd said.

BALANCING BUSINESS AND LIFE

Running a business while navigating school and other responsibilities requires discipline.

Evan carefully schedules detailing appointments around school and activities, often preparing supplies the night before a job.

Shepherd relied on detailed scheduling throughout high school, balancing landscaping projects with soccer games and other commitments. As his business expanded, he eventually adopted customer relationship management software to organize routes, appointments and invoicing.

Both agree that time management is one of the most valuable skills entrepreneurship has taught them.

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

Neither entrepreneur sees his current business as a temporary venture.

Dog hair, he said with a laugh, has proven to be one of the toughest detailing challenges so far.

Meanwhile, Shepherd discovered that running a business requires constant attention behind the scenes.

"What surprised me most was the work outside of the actual jobs," said Shepherd. "Tracking expenses, maintaining equipment, planning ahead and making sure everything runs smoothly."

He also learned valuable lessons through mistakes. Early on, he underestimated a landscaping project that he believed would take four hours. Three days later, he was still working.

The experience taught him the importance of thoroughly evaluating projects before providing estimates.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE

Ask either entrepreneur what matters most, and both quickly point to customer satisfaction.

For Evan, seeing a customer's reaction after a completed detail is the most rewarding part of the business. "Getting to see the smile on people's faces when they see the car when I am done," Evan said.

Shepherd agreed. "Customer service is extremely important because good relationships build trust," commented Shepherd. "Word-of-mouth has been my most effective advertisement."

That approach has paid off. One satisfied landscaping client recommended Shepherd to neighbors, helping him grow from one customer on a street to six within a month.

Both young men understand that reliability and honesty are essential business skills. Shepherd recalled accidentally damaging a customer's lawn while mowing. Rather than hiding

Shepherd's goals are even bigger. He plans to continue building his landscaping company while taking business classes and hopes to operate five trucks with crews within the next five years.

Both credit their fathers for helping them get started and encouraging them when challenges arose.

Their stories serve as a reminder that entrepreneurship doesn't require waiting until adulthood. Sometimes all it takes is a willingness to start, learn and keep showing up.

In a world that often celebrates overnight success, Evan Roberts and Shepherd Robinson are proving that hard work, responsibility and determination remain timeless ingredients for building something meaningful, no matter your age.

Regardless of your industry, you can create captions and subject lines that make someone do a double take and want more of what they are seeing.

A few easy formula examples: • Hot Take: “Unpopular opinion: GRWM videos are dead.”

• Confession: “I almost quit my business.”

• Curiosity: “The one beauty product I swear by…”

• Problem Solve: “Overwhelmed by dinner ideas? This is for you.”

INTO TRENDS THAT 3 LEAN FEEL ALIGNED

I’ve built a successful business without dancing on camera or pointing enthusiastically to floating words. Trust me, you don’t have to embrace every trend online. You should, however, find the ones that feel in alignment and include them in your content as it feels right. Maybe it’s a trending audio, caption hook or something else entirely – use it however feels right for your brand!

A coaching business may use an

audio hook to share a mindset shift, while a boutique owner uses the same one to unveil a new clothing line.

Ask yourself these questions: • Does this fit my brand voice?

• Does this speak to my ideal customer?

• Does this feel connected to my offer/ expertise?

Why Some Days Cost More Than Others

Sit through a tense meeting within two hours of eating lunch, and the body processes that meal as if 104 extra calories had gone in instead of the actual amount. Keep that pattern up most days for a year, and the result is close to 11 pounds gained without changing a single thing on the plate. That number comes out of research on stress hormones and metabolism, and it’s the clearest proof I’ve found that what happens in a woman’s head never stays in her head.

WHAT IS A BODY BUDGET?

The brain’s main job is to run a budget for the body. Same logic as a household budget except, instead of dollars, it tracks salt, glucose and oxygen, and it does not accept overtime. Every day there are three bills due: keeping the basic systems running, repairing and growing tissue, and covering anything effortful asked of it like work, exercise, a hard conversation or learning a new skill. There’s one fixed amount of energy to cover all three.

Overspend on one and the body ends up robbing Peter to pay Paul.

WHAT DRAINS IT?

Poor sleep, dehydration, chronic uncertainty and inflammation are the big four, and they rarely show up alone so it’s usually a perfect storm. Social stress is sneakier than most women realize. A tense phone call doesn’t just sit in the mood, it changes how the body handles the next meal. Alcohol adds to the bill too, much as we’d all like to file that second glass of wine as a tax write-off. It dulls the brain’s ability to learn from what’s happening around it, so tomorrow’s budget starts a little behind.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MOOD?

Mood is the running readout of the budget, playing quietly in the background whether anyone’s paying attention to it or not. Snappish, foggy or flat is an overdrawn account showing up, not a flaw in character. I believe most women reach for “what’s wrong with me” a lot faster than “what’s wrong with my budget,” and the second question is usually the more useful one to ask first.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

Sleep deserves the same priority as a doctor’s appointment, not an errand to cancel when the week gets busy. Skip enough of it and the body ends up trying to do a full day’s repair work on roughly half the fuel it needs, like running a marathon on the calories meant for a 5K. Water before coffee, every time. One kind of exercise should be steady and predictable, and one should be a bit chaotic like an interval class, a new sport or anything that throws the body off balance on purpose so it practices finding its way back.

Stress around mealtimes is worth watching where possible, and company is worth choosing with care. Sitting with someone who genuinely steadies the nervous system lowers what effort costs, measurably. The wrong company taxes a woman the same way bad sleep does.

Here’s the takeaway: the next time irritability, exhaustion or a sense of having lost your edge shows up, check the budget before checking your character. Before deciding something is fundamentally wrong with you, how many hours did you sleep, what did you eat and what did you carry today?

The wider truth underneath all of it is that the body has been keeping the books long before the mind ever weighed in, and most days, it’s a far more honest accountant than the inner critic.

Trying New Things: Grieving with Flower Mandalas

I recently lost two people incredibly important to me: one of my best friends, Wendy, and my therapist since 2019, Karen. The news devastated me. All I wanted when I found out was a rage room. I let myself sob. I let myself shake. I let myself sob some more. I didn’t care who saw my pain. I let myself grieve, and I’m still grieving.

I felt lost. Like the world isn’t right without them, like my life isn’t right without them, because it isn’t.

But, while I let myself grieve, I wanted to be more than grief. I didn’t want grief to consume me like it had in the past. This time, I wanted to focus on honoring the two women who had impacted me so profoundly, and I wanted to do something for myself, too.

So, I made flower mandalas.

I bought bouquets from the store, with the intention of finding flowers that reminded me of Wendy and Karen. I focused on color, shape, vibrancy and how each flower complemented and contrasted one another. But, ultimately, I chose the flowers that felt right, given the selection available that day.

It wasn’t perfect, but it was beautiful.

For Wendy, I chose pink, orange and yellow roses alongside a mix of mums and carnations. After her celebration of life, I went to a waterfall and made her mandala on a rock. I removed each flower from its stem and placed them in whatever way felt good. I didn’t have a plan besides knowing I wanted to use everything, stems and

leaves included. The mandala added to the serenity of the water, and the water made the mandala even more alive.

For Karen, I chose bright orange mums and daisies in various colors: lavender, yellow, orange, magenta and violet. And, for a delicate touch, carnations and baby’s breath. With permission from her supervisor, I made her mandala in the grass outside of her office, the day before her clients were invited to visit her room one last time. I used everything. Flowers, stems, leaves, even grass. The green ground made the flowers even more vibrant. It directed your attention to life, to color, to soul.

I loved making these mandalas. They helped me feel close to both women and myself. It felt good to grieve in a way that gave me peace. It felt good to practice grief as a way of art, nature, meditation.

Though I’d never made one until now, I’ve always felt drawn to flower mandalas – their beauty, their impermanence, the way they command your attention through color and contrast. I’d never let myself make one until now because it felt like a waste to spend money on something so temporary, on something I’d love but not be able to keep. Or, if I could keep it, it wouldn’t last; it’d die.

But, that’s precisely it, the reason for making them. Flower mandalas are a lesson in letting go, of letting something beautiful touch you and then letting yourself walk away from it, knowing you don’t need to take it because it’s already with you.

Purpose Push: Peaceful Productivity Are you the type of entrepreneur who experiences racing thoughts as soon as you sit down to begin your workday? It’s hard to combat them when there are competing priorities and not enough time in the day.

Hustle culture persuades us to make sacrifices to maximize our day, but over the years, my life has shown me that it yields more results with less exertion. Why? Because I have peace with God’s help.

Let me explain:

MORNING ROUTINES SET THE TONE

If I want my day to begin at a certain time, I give myself about two to three hours beforehand to wake up, journal, possibly exercise, have tea and Bible study, and sit with myself.

When I do this, I declutter my mind and invite optimism into the day. I have no idea what the day will bring, but I took care of myself first, and that will allow me to better pour into others with empathy, pivot around nuisances and give tasks my full attention. A morning routine makes me feel powerful and equips me with the audacity to believe I can do anything. Then, when I remind myself of Philippians 4:13, I’m officially unstoppable! That is what a great morning routine should do for you.

If you haven’t arrived there yet, try different wellness methods and see what works.

I REVISIT MY GOALS OFTEN

At the beginning of the year, I love to set yearly and quarterly goals.

I’ve created a digital system that encourages me to revisit my goals often. Goal setting can be fun, but when the chaos of life begins, it’s easy to forget your intentions and veer off track when new opportunities, strategies and ideas

Revisiting my goals often helps me stay focused and plan my daily and weekly tasks to align with them.

I STAY STILL AND LET GOD SPEAK

If you read my column in January (which you can also find on the Forsyth Woman website), I wrote about letting God write the chapters of your year because He knows best. I realize there will be moments of divine disruptions that will make me pivot to opportunities not on my goal list.

Staying still and allowing God to speak keeps me aligned, so I’m not pivoting to an opportunity that leads me off track.

The ironic thing is my own goals could lead me off track. If something has shifted in God’s plan, but I’m stubborn about not changing the goals I set with God, I could still miss out on huge blessings. Growing a business with God is not about increasing revenue but, rather, about increasing righteousness and self awareness. God will test me to see if I’m ready for what He has next, and passing the test requires full surrender, so I’m sensitive to what He’s telling me.

I RECALIBRATE WHEN I’M NOT IN SYNC

With all I’ve said, I want to be transparent. Do I stick to this every single day? Absolutely not. I’m not a robot. I wake up late, I may go a month without revisiting my goals and I’ve been

stubborn since childhood, so I do get stubborn with God. The important thing is for me to grow in self awareness, so I can recalibrate when I’m out of sync. The things that help me do that are journaling, fasting, praying, reflecting, embracing constructive criticism and taking care of my mind and body. Remembering that God gives grace as we learn can help recalibrate us with enthusiasm rather than demoralization.

My nudge is for you to find what works for your life and do your best to stay consistent with it. With time, you will see how much you accomplish because you’ve invited peace and ease into your life. Keep God at the center of it all, and you’ll be unstoppable. I have faith in you.

The Seaweed Crisis Hurricanes are on everyone’s radar when it comes to booking a Caribbean vacation between the months of June and November. However, no one seems to plan for sargassum season – but it’s about time they did. Sargassum is that pesky brown seaweed you may see floating in the ocean or washing up on shore. Composed of macroalgae, sargassum is normal and is what makes up the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt – a mass of sargassum seaweed spanning 5,000 miles across the Atlantic – and it’s only growing larger by the year. Terrifyingly, the sargassum belt has grown to such an extent that it is now visible from space. Thinking of braving hurricane season and heading to the Caribbean this August on a whim? Think again.

You may have seen articles here and there about masses of sargassum seaweed washing up on Florida beaches or plaguing the warm waters and Caribbean beaches in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and many more tourist hot spots. In some instances, sargassum accumulation can be so heavy on beaches that it completely sours the experience for tourists. As someone who values traveling and tries to think of all possibilities when planning a trip, I find it horrifying that more people aren’t spreading the word about the seaweed situation in the Caribbean to spare travelers the pain of a ruined vacation. There are ways to avoid worrying about sargassum raining on your Caribbean parade, but it takes a bit of planning and education ahead of time.

Sargassum is most prominently present on shorelines throughout the warmer months (sometimes as early as April) and can be seen through November. While a little seaweed here and there is no big deal, the sargassum crisis throughout the Caribbean isn’t your run-of-the-mill seaweed situation.

Large influxes of seaweed washing up ashore can ruin vacations, making the water look brown and stinking up the shoreline as it decomposes on shore in the hot sun.

While sargassum itself is not harmful, it is home to small marine life like jellyfish and their larvae, making playing in the seaweed a bit hazardous when large swaths make their way into shore. Aside from being an ocean nuisance, decomposing sargassum can begin releasing hydrogen sulfide and ammonia as it decomposes, creating the strong rotten eggs smell beachgoers complain about most often (scienceinsights.org/is-sargassum-dangerous-health-risksexplained). This can be harmful to individuals with respiratory conditions but is otherwise a stinky way to ruin a beach day. Many beaches and resorts are implementing clean-up plans to clear beaches of sargassum whenever possible, but not all vacation destinations have sargassum protocols in place.

To avoid major sargassum blooms, book your Caribbean vacation between December and March. Although sargassum is always present in the Atlantic due to the sargassum belt, it is rarely an issue outside of the hot late spring and summer months. If you must head to the Caribbean in the summer, the islands of Aruba, Curacao and areas such as Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos fare better when it comes to sargassum than other destinations. The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and Eastern beaches in Puerto Rico frequently see large amounts of sargassum in the summer, making trip planning a bit of a gamble.

Tourists and beachgoers do have the ability to track sargassum activity by using the Caricoos Sargassum Tracker (caricoos.org/ sargassum) or the NOAA Daily Sargassum Inundation Risk tool (cwcgom.aoml.noaa.gov/SIR). Much like a weather radar, the sargassum tracker allows users to monitor sargassum activity in various beaches for planning purposes. Of course, not all beaches are prone to sargassum accumulation, and wind and currents play a huge role in how often it washes up on shores.

Another hack is using webcams found online at resort properties in the destinations you’re headed to gauge sargassum levels, although levels can vary daily.

It’s important to do your research, read reviews and stick to summertime Caribbean destinations that are not typically home to large amounts of sargassum washing ashore. Be sure to book a rental property or resort with top notch pools as an alternative to swimming in the ocean in case sargassum rears its ugly head that week.

Conversation with Your BFF My BFF and I were having one of our chats over coffee that started out light and somehow wandered into deeper waters.

The kind of conversation that starts off discussing the latest soccer game, the cookout with the family or what you’re binge watching these days; then, without warning, someone asks a question that makes you stop and think. My BFF asked, “Who knows the real you?” That’s an excellent question and one I’m not so sure I am glad you asked!

“WHO KNOWS THE REAL YOU?” I answered quickly, or at least I thought I did.

But, before I could move on, she followed with another question.

“Who Knows the Real You?”

I understood exactly what she meant.

There is a loneliness that comes not from being alone, but rather, from feeling unseen.

WHY WE KEEP PARTS OF OURSELVES HIDDEN

As we talked, we wondered why it can be so difficult to let people know who we really are.

Perhaps it’s because vulnerability feels risky.

“NO, REALLY. WHO KNOWS THE REAL YOU?”

Not who knows your favorite coffee order.

If people know our fears, our insecurities, our disappointments or the mistakes we’ve made, they might judge us.

Not who knows where you went to school.

They might misunderstand us.

Not who knows your birthday, your dog’s name or where you work.

They might see us differently.

Who truly knows you?

The longer I sat with the question, the harder it became to answer.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING SEEN AND BEING KNOWN

We live in a world where people know a lot about us. Social media gives friends, acquaintances and even strangers glimpses into our lives. They see our vacation photos, our holiday celebrations, our grandkids, our gardens, our pets and our accomplishments.

But knowing about someone and truly knowing them are two very different things.

People may see the smile in a photo without knowing about the tears that came before it.

They may know about a promotion without understanding the self doubt that accompanied it.

They may see us showing up for everyone else while never realizing how much we need someone to show up for us.

My BFF admitted there have been times when she felt lonely despite being surrounded by people.

So, instead, we share the safer parts. The polished parts. The parts that fit neatly into conversations and social media posts.

But, in doing so, we sometimes miss out on the deeper connections we crave.

After all, friendships aren’t strengthened by sharing only our successes. They grow stronger when we trust someone enough to share our struggles, too.

THE GIFT OF BEING FULLY KNOWN

One of the greatest gifts we can receive is finding someone who knows us completely and chooses to stay.

Someone who knows our flaws and loves us anyway.

At the end of the day, most of us aren’t looking for more followers, more likes or more people who know our names.

We’re looking for connection.

We’re looking for people who see beyond the surface and care enough to ask the second question.

Someone who remembers our stories, understands our quirks and notices when something is wrong before we say a word.

The deeper question.

Those relationships are rare, but they are priceless.

So, this month, I leave you with the same question my BFF asked me: WHO KNOWS THE REAL YOU?

My BFF said something during our conversation that stayed with me long after we said goodbye.

“Being loved is wonderful, but being known and loved is what we all really want.”

The more I thought about it, the more I realized she was right.

The one that requires an honest answer.

And, if no one immediately comes to mind, what small step could you take today to let someone know you a little better?

Sometimes the strongest friendships begin the moment we stop hiding and start sharing who we really are.
