Behind The Scenes of Our Cover Shoot

When we published our first full size edition of Forsyth Woman Engaged! in November, we broke away from our tradition of featuring a bride on the cover, opting instead for an engagement picture.

Our November models perfectly captured the joy and excitement that surrounds an engagement.

For the May issue, we knew we wanted to celebrate that next step and resume our bride-on-the-cover approach. We looked at pictures of some beautiful women, but when we found Catherine – we knew we’d found our cover model!

Catherine Hamlin is our cover bride and is a Winston-Salem native who is a graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. This gorgeous 25-year-old has a radiant personality that enables her inner beauty to shine as brightly as her outer beauty.

I am also happy to introduce you to our cover photographer, Daryl Shaw. Daryl owns Daryl Shaw Photography and loves capturing wedding memories. And, as you can see from the cover and our behind-the-scenes pictures, Daryl is extraordinarily talented and, without question, any bride who hires him is guaranteed exceptional photos!

Capturing the Moment

It’s your special day, and you’ll want to capture every single moment! Your photographer may offer you a list of proposed shots, or you may come up with your own. Either way, you’ll want to clearly convey what shots are most important to you. Consider the following: INCLUDE FAMILY MEMBERS you don’t see often or who may not be around in the future.

CONVEY YOUR EXPECTATIONS of whom, when and where beforehand, so no time is wasted waiting or searching for guests.

INCORPORATE UNIQUE ASPECTS OF THE VENUE. Ask the venue coordinator for some good spots or scope out a few ahead of time.

ENLIST THE HELP OF AMATEUR PHOTOGS. If your budget only allows for a limited amount of formal shots from your photographer, recruit the help of a few friends to get candid shots. Create an online profile at a website like snapfish.com where everyone can upload and share.

INTEGRATE THE ACCOUTREMENTS. The rings, the flowers, the décor - you spent lot of time and money on these things, so don’t forget to include them.

TAKE THE PICTURES YOU WANT MOST FIRST if there’s a possibility you may run out of time or light, or if temperatures and/or temperaments are working against you.

KEEP IT AS SUCCINCT AS POSSIBLE. Guests’ limited patience, as well as the stamina of grandparents and small children should be considered.

HAVE A RAIN PLAN. Scope out indoor shots you could supplement with in case of bad weather.

INCLUDE IMPORTANT GUESTS’ NAMES on your shot list to make it easier for the photographer to locate them throughout the day.

LOOK ONLINE for various shots you haven’t considered, and make your wedding photography a unique reflection of your personality and taste.

The Science of Selecting Complementary Wedding Colors

One of the first questions a wedding consultant is likely to ask is “Where’s the wedding going to be?” That, along with “What is the date?” are important considerations. But, there’s one question that drives the responses to almost all the other decisions that come into play -- “What are your colors?” Think about it. The color selection is necessary before you can pick flowers, linens, dresses and tuxes for the wedding party, the cake, table settings, etc. Virtually all these are tied in some way to the color palette.

Generally, one primary color with two accent colors is recommended. If more than three are used, the look can be a bit overwhelming. There are several websites that are designed to help you make your color choices:

So, what are some ways to determine your colors? A few are relatively easy:

BIGHUGELABS.COM (PALETTE GENERATOR) -- Upload a photo that captures your intended look, and you’ll see a breakdown of colors that would work for that concept.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR? Check your closet. What is the primary color you wear? When shopping, what color catches your attention?

WHAT SEASON IS THE WEDDING? Spring and summer call to mind the vibrant colors of nature while fall and winter invoke darker, richer hues.

WHERE IS THE WEDDING TO BE HELD (WHAT ARE THE COLORS OF THE VENUE)? The venue’s color palette does come into play -- you don’t want your colors to clash with the carpet, drapes or wall colors which is why many venues are quite neutral.

COLORSCHEMER.COM -- Enter a word to describe your wedding vision, and options will be provided.

SHERWIN-WILLIAMSCOLORGENERATOR.COM -- Select a color, and the site will show two accent colors to complement the primary choice.

PINTEREST.COM -- Sort your pins into groupings to view the impact of different color choices.

GO TO YOUR LOCAL HARDWARE STORE OR DIY, and check out the paint chips and options.

USE A COLOR WHEEL (the most common wheel has twelve colors based on the artistic color model). Colors on the wheel are defined as: Primary: Red, Yellow, Blue Secondary (made by mixing two primary colors): Green, Orange, Purple

WHAT IS THE STYLE OF YOUR WEDDING GOWN? Generally, a gown of lace with pearl buttons, for instance, works well with light colors, neutrals or pastels. However, on the other hand, a showstopper gown calls for bold choices such as bright colors or the drama of black and white.

ARE THERE CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS (SOME COLORS HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS AND ARE NOT USED IN WEDDINGS)?

Related: These are colors that sit next to each other on the wheel. This combination is typically found in nature and creates a soothing, pleasant vision.

WHAT IS THE THEME OF YOUR WEDDING? Romantic – Typically the colors would be pale, soft, pastel Antique – Depending on the season, colors may be strong or rich such as burgundy or hunter green Boho – Colors gone wild (a kaleidoscope for the senses) Country – The colors of the great outdoors (daisies, wildflowers) Traditional – Roses, lilies, timeless elegance

There are a number of combinations based on color selection and their proximity to each other. White, black and gray are considered neutral colors on the color wheel. A few combinations to consider are:

Monochromatic: These are varying shades of one color.

Complementary: These shades are on opposite sides of the wheel. These colors stand out and have a high contrast (for example, red and green).

Triadic: Colors are evenly spaced around the wheel. This is typically a vibrant combination and care needs to be taken to ensure that only one color is primary.

Destination Wedding Considerations

The idea of a destination wedding has been quite popular for the past several years. Having a wedding in a tropical, romantic and fun place may be great; but there are considerations to think through that may make a local wedding much more appealing. One of the biggest draws of a destination wedding is that it is marketed as simple, stress-free and economical, but is it really?

WHO TO INVITE: The guest list for a destination wedding is usually quite small (typically fewer than 50). Who will be on the list, and who will be left out? Who will you share your big day with? That’s not an easy decision to make or explain to friends and family. Depending on the location selected, some people will simply not be able to afford the expense. There’s a huge difference in attending a local wedding for several hours versus taking time from work for several days to attend a wedding.

In many cases, to avoid hurt feelings, the bridal couple may plan a reception once they return home for those not able to attend. If cost was a factor in selecting a destination wedding, having a reception back home will cut into any savings quickly.

COST AND ABILITY TO ATTEND: The expense to attend a destination wedding may be prohibitive. In this economy, budgeting may be tight, making the travel expenses (tickets, lodging, meals, etc.) too much for guests to overcome. There’s also entertainment to consider for those who do attend.

They’ll need something to do besides attending the wedding. Sightseeing and local activities are likely offered by the resort for your guests but may not be included in the wedding package.

Also, some may not be physically able to travel a long distance. If grandparents have never flown or are not comfortable traveling, they may be unable to be there for that special day. Or, health concerns may keep family members from being able to participate.

LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: Depending on the location, you and your groom may be required to be at the destination a set number of days before obtaining a marriage license. Plus, you will need to research what documents you will need to bring with you as part of the process (birth certificates, etc.).

And, you will need to confirm that the marriage will be recognized when you return to the United States. (Be sure your last name is consistent on all your paperwork, or you will have difficulty re-entering the country. Wait to request name changes until you’re back from your honeymoon.)

PACKAGED EVENT OPTIONS: Planning your wedding based on options offered by a resort may be stress free, but it does eliminate any personalization or specialness for the couple. Making a wedding special and memorable is what makes planning fun. There’s little to no room for changes with a packaged event and certainly no creative control.

PHOTOGRAPHERS & VIDEOGRAPHERS ARE OFTEN PART OF THE PACKAGE: The package may include a set number of sized photos. Additional requests will likely drive up the price if the option is even available. Perhaps you don’t want a videographer. You’ll likely have to pay the expense regardless.

FLOWERS: The floral arrangements are most likely pre-selected based on the package purchased and may or may not be ones you’d select if you had the option.

WEDDING CAKE/RECEPTION: What’s one of the fun parts of planning a wedding? Cake tasting, of course. The cake and food may be part of the overall deal. Hopefully, you will be able to select what will be served from a menu; you just won’t have the option of tasting beforehand.

TRANSPORTING GARMENTS: In many cases, the bridal gown will travel with you to the destination. That may mean that the gown will need to be steamed before the wedding. Plan ahead with the resort if that is not mentioned in the arrangements.

HAIR/MAKE-UP: Most brides have at least one pre-wedding makeup and hair appointment scheduled to be sure the look and style is exactly right for their special day. The idea of having a stranger do your hair and make-up is not a prospect many would be open to experiencing.

Selecting local vendors or do-it-yourself options can be factors in keeping expenses under control for local weddings. Perhaps the destination option is better as the honeymoon location rather than for the entire wedding. Either option requires planning and budgeting. Research and talk to friends and family who have had destination weddings before making a final decision.

Parties Around the Party

Congratulations on your engagement! Now, the fun part begins: Wedding Planning! While, of course, your wedding day is the most important party…you still need to prepare for all of the other parties around THE party.

FIRST THINGS FIRST…THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY! This seems to be a newer trend -- but I love it! Getting engaged is a huge deal, so why not celebrate with a party? One of my favorite engagement party trends is having the engagement party on the couple’s “negative one-year anniversary.” It’s the perfect way to start the countdown to your big day. Engagement lengths vary, and if you are like my husband and me, you may not even have a full year between the time you get engaged and your wedding day. That’s OK! An engagement party is still very appropriate. Themes vary from “I-do BBQ’s” to more elegant cocktail parties. Hosts should get a feel for the couple’s style before deciding on a theme.

BRIDAL SHOWERS Bridal showers have typically been a time for all of the women in the bride and groom’s lives to get together, play silly games, eat cake squares and watch the bride open all of her presents (don’t break too many ribbons though…unless you WANT eight kids!). I love a traditional bridal shower, but I really love that many are stepping outside of the box with bridal showers.

Couples showers are quickly becoming a popular trend. Rather than your mid-morning brunch with the girls, couples showers can be an evening event that includes everyone. This could be in lieu of an engagement party and can be as intimate or as large of a party as you’d like.

BACHELORETTE/BACHELOR PARTIES These don’t need any explanation! This is a trend that has pretty much stayed the same for years and years. The only change being that typically bachelor and bachelorette parties are done a few weeks before the wedding…NOT the evening before the wedding. No need to risk making the hangover movie a reality, am I right?

REHEARSAL DINNER This is where the groom’s parents typically take over the planning process. The rehearsal dinner is a welcome party for out-of-town guests as well as a kick-off to the wedding weekend. This is a time for the bride and groom’s out-of-town families to meet one another. My advice is to let this party be all about the groom; let him and his parents choose everything from his favorite food and drinks to serve to the color scheme. Your in-laws will love you for it, I promise.

If you are having a larger wedding, the rehearsal dinner may be a good time for the bridal party and family to make toasts. Often the best man, maid (or matron) of honor and parents of the bride will save their toasts for the wedding.

POST-WEDDING BRUNCH A totally optional party…but definitely an up-and-coming trend. It’s a great way to thank all of your guests for celebrating with you. A post-wedding brunch doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, it could be as simple as a continental breakfast at the hotel where everyone is staying…or a full bacon, eggs, French toast and orange juice sit down meal at a family member’s home. Depending on when your flight leaves for your honeymoon…you and your new hubby may or may not be able to attend the post-wedding brunch.

Enjoy all of your parties…and don’t forget to write “thank-you” notes to all of your lovely family and friends that host these parties for you and your soon-tobe husband.

Bridesmaids’ Budgets: Factoring in the Cost to Your Bridal Party

Being a bridesmaid isn’t cheap. While we know there will be out-ofpocket costs for the groomsmen too, it’s not quite the same. They rent a tux, maybe get a haircut and chip in for the bachelor’s party. For the most part – that’s it. For bridesmaids, there’s the dress, shoes, undergarments, alterations, hair, make-up, nails, bachelorette party and bridal shower!

And, this is all assuming the bridesmaids are local and won’t incur any travel fees!

There isn’t any substantial data on the average cost spent to be a bridesmaid, but most experts agree that the cost is somewhere in the $1,500 range.

Your best friends are excited to help you celebrate your day and shower you with attention and gifts. However, one of the greatest gifts you can give them is financial consideration of their wallets. Some suggestions include: • If you’re able, offer to buy their dresses (or pick up the tab for half the cost).

• Pay for their alterations.

• Ask them to rent a dress from RentTheRunway.com (or rent it for them).

• Send them color swatches of your wedding colors and let them choose their dresses in the color of your choosing, but in the price range they can easily afford.

• Choose a neutral color that everyone is likely to have (i.e., black, Earth tones) and let your bridesmaids wear something they already have.

• Buy their shoes and accessories.

• Consider paying for their hair and make-up to be done before the wedding.

• Skip the bachelorette party, and ask them to plan a slumber party!

• If you have bridesmaids who are traveling, try to maximize their trips by making sure that the bridesmaid luncheon and shower take place the same weekend.

Whatever steps you can take to help your bridesmaids out will be most appreciated. While we know it’s your special day, they will be happier to celebrate your wedding if they aren’t mentally calculating a long list of expenses that they are worried about paying.

“Especially when it comes to the bride walking down the aisle, put your cell phone away.” - Laura S. “From the brides perspective, it’s frustrating when guests post tons of wedding pictures on Facebook immediately after the wedding. I want to be the one to share my professional wedding photos with all of my family and friends.” - Mary H. Several others didn’t see an issue with having phones at weddings and shared their personal experiences: Do you think you can truly “be in the moment” while you are taking pictures? There is no right or wrong answer…but it is something to think about. Many would argue that you couldn’t fully enjoy the moment from behind your camera lens.

For this reason, “unplugged weddings” are quickly becoming a popular trend.

I posed the question on Facebook to have or not to have cell phones at weddings. Several agreed that cell phones should not be allowed at the ceremony but are great for taking fun pictures at the reception (if the bride says its OK, of course).

“I have heard too many cell phones go off during the ceremony!

Leave them in the car!” - Sally D. “[The ceremony] is an intimate moment and the whole reason for the celebration! Discuss your preferences with your groom-to-be, and make a decision well in advance. Going to a Bridal Show: Tips to Make the Most of Your Experience

Wedding planning can be overwhelming, especially if you have never been a part of the process before with a sibling or close friend. While hiring a wedding planner is the desired option for many brides, some decide to attend at least one bridal show before making that decision. No matter how large the bridal show is, it will require you to devote several hours of your day to get the most out of the event.

Researching vendors online and utilizing word of mouth are both great options to narrow down your list of possible vendors for the big day, but nothing will make as much of an impact as meeting these professionals face to face. To make the most out of each and every bridal show you choose to attend, below are some tips to keep in mind: • Bring along your support system. This would include your mom, maid of honor, sibling(s), etc. Anyone who is close enough to you to know what you are looking for and what will be most helpful to you in the months leading up to your wedding day.

• Plan to devote enough time for the event. Some bridal shows have dozens of vendors with multiple professionals in each category. If you do not have any idea what kind of photographer you want or what type of venue you are considering, expect to spend most of your day meeting each one in every category where you feel clueless.

• Bring a notebook and large bag. You will be given a lot of information during the bridal show. Many vendors will have brochures, and some will explain all the services they offer that you’ll want to write down for future reference. The bag can also serve as a place for any door prizes you might win or small purchases you might make.

• Make sure to bring your checkbook and/or credit card. In addition to items that will be for sale at bridal shows, you may find yourself in a position of booking a vendor on the spot. Maybe you really love a cake chef, but his or her dates are quickly filling up for the month of your wedding. Maybe you already researched a vendor online, and all you were waiting for was the opportunity to chat in person before making a final decision. There is certainly no pressure to make these decisions during the bridal show, but if you do, you’ll be happy you came prepared!

• Consider bringing personal information cards with you. Many vendors will ask you to fill out contact forms or enter for prizes such as free photography sessions or a discount on wedding services. You will save a lot of time not to mention avoid a sore hand by bringing pre-printed cards or mailing labels with you.

• Plan ahead. Research which vendors will be present at the show, create a list of all the services you’d like more information about and have a wedding budget set beforehand. You will want to wear comfortable shoes and have a realistic plan for what you hope to accomplish at the bridal show.

Most importantly, have fun at the event! Keep in mind that planning your wedding is supposed to be fun and a great time to learn more about your fiancé as you plan your future together. Your support system is there to help you along the way, so do not hesitate to divvy up the workload. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by details – that’s why you hire professionals!

Records date the tradition of the wedding cake as far back as Ancient Rome. To finalize the ceremony, a cake of wheat or barley was broken over the bride’s head as a symbol of good fortune. The bride and groom ate a few crumbs, and the guests gathered up leftover crumbs as tokens of good luck. In later years, the breaking a cake over the bride’s head became crumbling sweet cakes over her head. After all the cakes were used, guests received handfuls of a mixture of sweetmeats. The showering of the crumbs many years later became the custom of throwing rice, flower petals or colored paper confetti at the happy couple. In medieval England, an early form of a wedding cake was spiced buns stacked in a towering pile as high as possible. If the newly married couple were able to kiss over the tall stack, they would have a life of prosperity. The earliest British recipe noted for a wedding cake was recorded in 1685. It was a large round pie with an elaborately decorated crust that had a filling of oysters, pine kernels, cockscombs, lamb stones, sweetbreads and spices -- thank goodness wedding cakes have evolved to the beautiful and delicious dessert we look forward to having at the reception.

You’ve sent the invitations and are delighted that so many out-of-town family and friends have committed to travel to celebrate your upcoming marriage! You’ve secured a block of rooms for them at the local hotel, but what else can you do for them? You’re going to be too busy to personally greet them at the airport, but there are several small, thoughtful and affordable options to demonstrate your thankfulness to your guests who have incurred travel costs to be a part of your day.

PREPARE AN ITINERARY AND LIST OF LOCAL ATTRACTIONS Hotels will be happy to make sure your guests get an itinerary of the wedding weekend along with a packet of local information. Be sure to include a list of nearby restaurants they may enjoy as well some fun, local attractions. Your packet may even include copies of Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family magazines to help inform your guests of local events, places to shop and places to dine.

MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR A COCKTAIL HOUR If your guests are arriving on the day of the rehearsal dinner, and your budget won’t allow for you to invite them, consider organizing a small meet-and-greet for them at the hotel, so they can get to know other family and friends who have come in to celebrate. Most hotels can easily accommodate beer and wine, along with some fruit, cheese and light hors d’oeuvres.

In fact, many consider the flowers to be one of the most important aspects of a wedding. They bring color, aroma and a fresh sweetness to the ceremony and can transform a plain space into a lovely venue.

Unfortunately, they can also be budget busters, especially if you have not planned ahead for what you will need.

Putting Your Special Touch on Your Special Day

Through the years there have been many changes in weddings. No longer do all brides dress in white or ivory, send engraved invitations on ivory card stock, marry in their hometowns, have white cakes topped with a bride and groom or carry a bouquet that is just like the one seen in every other girl’s wedding. Instead of cookie-cutter celebrations, weddings now take on the style and personality of the couple. This is reflected in all aspects of the ceremony and reception down to the smallest detail. Where most brides carry a bouquet made of fresh flowers, now brides can incorporate their themes, settings and personalities into their bouquets.

• Beach wedding? Consider a bouquet made of shells or have shells interspersed among flowers or greenery.

• Books or music a big part of your life? Create flowers using sheet music or pages from a novel, or have strips of them woven among the flowers.

• Having a country wedding? Consider adding burlap roses or flowers made from cloth.

Use dried materials or fresh foliage indigenous to the area to add color, if desired.

• Dealing with a tropical climate and worried about wilting fresh flowers? Beautiful bouquets can be made using silk flowers (that today are almost impossible to differentiate from the real thing).

• Do you envision a wedding with plenty of glitz, glam and sparkle? For a lot of sparkle, your bouquet can be made entirely of costume jewelry. For those wanting to add a touch of bling, rhinestone-topped pins can be inserted into the center of fresh or silk flowers.

One thing to keep in mind is the weight of a jeweled bouquet.

• Do not be afraid to use unconventional items in making your bouquet.

Once you have decided what you would like your bouquet to look like and the materials you would like to incorporate, make sure you or someone else can make it happen. It is important, especially if it is unconventional, to attempt the look you are after in plenty of time to make adjustments to the design or rethink it entirely. The basics include a dress, a cake, some flowers and some music. Throw in a groom and a preacher, and you’ve got yourself a wedding. However, while modern brides may share the basics, the look, the experience, the wedding…are all about personal reflection. A great way to put your own spin on the wedding (and help control the costs at the bar) is to plan for a signature cocktail. Consider one of these ideas for your own wedding!

CRANBERRY KISS A passionate shade of red adds to the sweet tartness of this cocktail.

• ¾ oz Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum • 2 oz Collins mix • 2 oz cranberry juice • lemon wedge Pour all ingredients over ice, and stir.

BLUEBERRY MOJITOS Bring a little “something blue” to your cocktail hour.

• 2 oz white rum • ¾ oz freshly squeezed lime juice • ½ oz cane syrup or simple syrup • mint leaves • blueberries Press mint leaves into the cane syrup (or simple syrup). Add blueberries, rum and lime juice. Stir well. Pour over ice, and top with blueberries.

BLUSHING KISS The perfect shade of pink gives this drink a touch of elegance.

• 2 parts gin • 1 part St. Germain • 1 part grapefruit juice • grapefruit wedge • 1 sprig of thyme Shake gin, St. Germain and grapefruit juice with ice, and pour through a strainer into a chilled martini glass. Add a wedge of grapefruit and thyme.

Flattering Necklines

Just imagine all the photographs that will be snapped at your wedding.

You know your dream gown will be a prominent feature -- sometimes it’s the full-length, and sometimes it’s just a romantic angle or a whirlwind of lace.

What will always show, however, is the graceful neckline which will frame your smiling face, and it’s an element of your gown shopping you don’t want to take for granted. Your gown’s neckline will really highlight its entire silhouette, so its shape should be the most flattering style possible and, most of all, should accent your best features! Thank goodness there are choices because the most recent fashion ruler -- the strapless bodice -- is not a one-size-fits-all option and can cause you to appear too top heavy and bulky unless you’re blessed with the absolute perfect figure. So, weigh your options carefully!

• Off-the-shoulder is the ultimate classic look. With sleeves falling just below the shoulders, off-the-shoulder is flattering to hourglass shapes and also projects a very romantic image.

• A portrait neckline is similar to off-the-shoulder but provides slightly more fabric which is more flattering to brides with heavy arms.

• The bateau neckline (also called a Sabrina) is cut straight across and does not draw attention to the chest area and, therefore, is great for small-busted brides.

• If you love a halter-style neckline -- which ties at the back of the neck -make sure you have the height and great shoulders to pull it off!

• An asymmetrical or one-shoulder neckline is a decidedly more modern look and also good for a small bust, especially when the one strap is embellished with lace or a fabric flower detail to draw the eye upward.

• A good look for most figures, a scoop-neck gown typically has short sleeves attached to it and can be low in the back also. (It is rounded in the front but lower than a jewel neckline.)

• A cowl neckline may remind you of a turtleneck, but it’s actually loose fabric layered in the front which creates a vertical line and elongates the body -- who doesn’t love that?

• The jewel neckline is also often referred to as a T-shirt neckline because it looks like just that -- the comfortable, rounded neck of your favorite T-shirt. Its styling is also flattering to small-busted brides.

• As its name suggests, a sweetheart neckline is shaped like the top of a heart. Ideal for hourglass shapes, its styling accents décolletage like nothing else! The sweetheart style can be incorporated into a strapless bodice as well which is more flattering than straight-across strapless.

• A square neckline typically has straps (wide or spaghetti-width) or slight cap sleeves, and it stretches in a square shape across your upper chest.

• Always a popular choice, the V-neck bodice can dip in both the front and the back and is a smart choice for medium-busted brides as it does not call attention to the bust but, instead, dips slightly lower. A V-neck works well with short sleeves, three-quarter sleeves or long sleeves and should not be avoided because you may think it’s too revealing. It can be the most tasteful, flattering look of all!

• Quite a royal look, the Queen Anne neckline comes up with a higher collar at the very back of the neck (especially beautiful if the collar is all lace) and a scoop or V-neck in the front.

The Perfect Gown Times Two

Finding that one dream gown these days often leads to, well, finding two. The trend of wearing a second, different dress for the reception is growing strong, and many of you may be thinking of gracing your guests with a double dose of lace and fineness. Here are some truths about wearing two gowns and some things to consider!

• Perhaps you had “that” feeling twice at your favorite bridal salon. That’s a top reason brides end up with a pair of beautiful gowns -- they simply can’t choose.

• Brides often wear two gowns for multi-cultural celebrations where they may participate in the ceremony wearing the traditional attire of their native countries and then switching to a more contemporary gown for dinner and dancing.

• Your friends may tell you pulling off two ensembles will be too complicated, but it’s likely you can wear the same accessories with each, especially if you’re including heirloom pieces. If you’re wearing sentimental jewelry for the ceremony, however, and switching to a shorter gown for the celebration after, consider a signature piece of jewelry -- such as a fabulous necklace -- for the reception ensemble.

• Have you given thought to your undergarments? You may need totally different pieces underneath to make the second gown look its best.

• If you’ve found fabulous wedding shoes, wear something more formal for the ceremony and a short, sassy style (yes, to show off those shoes) for the reception.

• Another top reason to wear two different looks? You may be incorporating your mother’s wedding gown into your celebration, so you’ll want to wear hers for the sentimental ceremony and perhaps a newer design for the party later.

She’ll understand.

• Lots of brides dream of a fairy tale ball gown but see the need for something simpler at the reception, as in a style that’s easier to dance and mingle in. A cathedral-length train, for example, is bulky and not conducive to dancing, and a heavily beaded gown can be just that -- heavy to carry around.

• If you’re pondering two gowns but don’t want to go to extremes, consider two looks from the same designer. You’ll be keeping the same basic feel but maybe with a varying neckline or hemline.

• To make a bold fashion statement without wearing two gowns, choose an elegant design with a removable tulle skirt. Removing it for the reception to reveal a mini will be both fashionable and fun!

• Cost is also a consideration, so it’s good to be realistic about what portion of your overall wedding budget can be devoted to attire. On the bright side, if you’re wearing your mother’s gown, ensemble #1 isn’t costing you a thing, and you’re making beautiful memories.

• Photography-wise, keep your ceremony photos traditional by posing for those in your first gown. Save the second look for more casual photos at the reception or a quick shoot with your photographer around town at some of your favorite spots.

• When should you make the big switch? Usually during the cocktail hour or while guests are mingling and finding their way to the reception. If you’ll be switching up your hairstyle, too, have your hair and makeup expert standing by.

The bottom line -- if you’re considering following the trend of a second gown, do make sure that both styles make you look -- and feel -- like a bride. Don’t slip into something so simple for the reception that you lose your sparkle and shine!

Something Old, Something Manly

As the planning begins for the big day, most brides can’t wait to start looking at wedding gowns -- trying them on and coordinating their shoes, veils and jewelry.

The fellas seem to have it easier -- tuxedo or suit? Make a decision, done!

SOCKS – Basic black dress socks with a tuxedo is a classic, traditional way to go and flattering to anyone. But, more and more wedding parties are taking it up a notch and having fun with what peaks out from under that pant leg!

• Pastel or bold colored argyles • Super hero logos • Sports team logos • Stripes in every color of the rainbow • Van Gogh, DaVinci, Picasso art socks • Mustache socks JEWELRY – These are details that can easily get overlooked by the guys, so be sure it’s on the “things to talk about” list! There is nothing worse than a groom showing up wearing his clunky sports watch with his fabulous new suit and tie! And, the same attention should be paid to the groomsmen.

It you’re planning for your big day, then you’ve probably considered the “something old and something new” you’ll be wearing. If you haven’t decided yet, here are some things to consider: SOMETHING OLD - The “something old” in this traditional rhyme stands for the bride’s connection to her family and their shared history, and the continuity of that connection into her new relationship. If you have a family heirloom, this is the perfect time to wear it, but if not, here are some other ways to incorporate the “something old:” • A bit of old lace incorporated into your dress design • Jewelry from a past generation from a local antique’s shop • An antique lace handkerchief which can be worn inside the bodice of your gown or wrapped around your flowers • A locket with pictures of loved ones who have passed on inside • An antique brooch can be worn pinned to your dress, veil or bouquet wrap • An antique clutch purse (these are easy to find and add a little fun to your look) • A repurposed piece of antique jewelry (turn a brooch into a hair decoration, a locket into a charm, a pendent into a charm, etc.)

SOMETHING NEW - The “something new” you’ll be wearing represents a clean slate and hope for the future. While you’ll probably be purchasing a variety of new items for your big day, here are a few ideas you might want to consider for your “something new:” • Your dress can be your something new • Your wedding ring • A new pair of shoes for the occasion • Jewelry, a headdress or a veil • Undergarments or lingerie

SOMETHING BORROWED - The “something borrowed” should come from a happily married woman whose happiness you want to rub off on you.

You’ll want to prearrange this ahead of time, no doubt, to ensure you have an item on hand that meets these criteria. Your mother, mother-in-law, sister or friends may even volunteer something, but if not, here are some ideas: • Borrow a piece of jewelry (necklace, earrings, brooch, bracelet, hairpin or ring) • Borrow a veil or headdress • Borrow a crinoline (these are often an added expense and never worn again) • Borrow a handkerchief from your dad for the occasion SOMETHING BLUE - In the past, the color blue was thought to represent fidelity and love. This belief was so widespread that brides were often married in blue gowns. Incorporating blue might seem tricky if your wedding day colors don’t coordinate, but don’t worry, it can easily be hidden from sight if needed. Here are some things to think about incorporating: • Lingerie or garters with little blue ribbons • Your initials or wedding date monogrammed inside your dress, veil or on a handkerchief in blue. (You can also use crystals for a more eye-catching effect.)

• A blue sash • Blue shoes (shoes can be dyed in every color from eggshell to Tiffany blue to teal) • Blue flowers included in your bouquet • An anklet (easy to hide, and you can add additional good luck charms) AND A SIXPENCE FOR YOUR SHOE - This part of the rhyme often gets left off, but the sixpence represents good luck and financial prosperity, not unlike picking up a lucky penny off the street. If you’re keen to keep to tradition, you can purchase a new sixpence for less than $10. Some even come attached to a safety pin with other good luck charms that can be hidden under your dress.

Should You Hire a Wedding Planner?

From the moment a girl says, “Yes,” the wedding planning begins. In some (if not most) cases, the wedding may have been thought out years in advance, even from the time we were dressing up Barbie and Ken for their special day (for the 823rd time). But, on engagement day, the process can suddenly become overwhelming, if not daunting. Enter the modern day bridal superhero -- the wedding planner.

For some who are worried about the potentially exorbitant cost of a wedding, the idea of hiring a planner may seem to be a frivolous or unnecessary expense. However, in the words of wedding planning pro Kristin Johnson (one-half of the dynamic duo at Perfect Pair Events), “We realize that hiring a wedding planner is an investment.

We understand that weddings are expensive and that families will be spending a lot of money in the coming months. However, in our experience, no matter how reluctant a couple or family may be on the front end, they’ve never regretted investing in planning and assistance on the back end. It’s truly a relief.”

If you’re newly engaged, consider the investment of a wedding planner.

Planning a wedding should be fun, stress-free and an opportunity to celebrate the biggest commitment you’re going to make in your lifetime.

Even if you’re not sure about working the cost into your budget, most wedding planners are going to offer an opportunity to meet before a financial commitment. It never hurts to talk and learn what the options entail!

That’s because a good wedding planner is there to help guide a couple through the process. It’s not his or her job to create the vision but, rather, to bring the couple’s unique vision to reality. “A quality wedding planner is going to encourage the couple to put their signature style on their special day,” said Jennie Hess (the other half of the dynamic duo).

Kristin and Jennie also give their brides wise advice, “A wedding is supposed to be fun; the months of engagement should be savored and enjoyed. Partnering with a wedding planner in the months before your wedding will enable you to relax and enjoy the process.” Certainly, anyone who has hired a planner can attest to the fact that a planner takes a great deal of that burden of stress off his or her plates.

Consider one of Perfect Pair Events’ own clients, whose outdoor wedding had to be moved indoors in the 11th hour. “It didn’t simply rain on our wedding day; we had a torrential downpour less than an hour before our outdoor ceremony was scheduled to start,” reminisced recently married, Meagan. “I owe our ability to keep cool and calm to our fabulous wedding planners. If we hadn’t had them there to maneuver 350+ guests back inside and completely rearrange our ceremony in less than 20 minutes, I’m not exactly sure what I would’ve done, but the word ‘bridezilla’ comes to mind.”

Of course, it doesn’t have to be rain. What if the caterer has an issue with the food? Or the cake baker gets stuck in traffic? Or one of the groomsmen crushes his boutonniere, and you don’t have a spare? Perhaps the minister is running late? Or any number of fiascos that have the potential to derail all those hours you spent planning the perfect day?

The great news about a wedding planner is that they offer various packages that are priced to meet every budget and, of course, every bride’s wishes. Whether the couple is looking for someone to take the reins all the way or serve as an advisor and help guide the process, or help fine-tune the details, wedding planners will tailor their services. “However,” said Kristin, “we advise against wedding day-only coordination. It’s very hard on everyone – family, couple, vendors and planners – to be cohesive when a planner shows up the day of an event that they didn’t help coordinate and guarantee seamless results. In fact, our business no longer offers day-of coordination, though we do offer a Polish Package for the final month of planning.”

There are steps you can take to make planning your reception a little less stressful, so that’s the good news! Below are several steps that will give you a general idea of how to minimize the anxiety you feel when looking at your to-do list:

SET A DATE – First and foremost, setting a date for your wedding is always the first step. Once this date is set, you will be able to nail down all your other plans.

PICK A VENUE – Luckily, selecting the venue will make several decisions for you. Some venues require certain things such as using house wine or beer, using a house band or one from a pre-approved list, only offering certain time frames of day or requiring that a specific amount of food be ordered. All of these are things you need to discuss with every venue you consider, but make sure you keep in mind that dates fill up quickly, so don’t wait too long to finalize plans with your chosen location.

DECIDE ON A BUDGET – Figuring out your budget will help you narrow down your options for venue, décor, vendors, etc.

FIGURE OUT WHAT TYPE OF WEDDING YOU WANT – Outdoor versus Indoor?

Casual versus formal? Daytime versus nighttime? These may seem like big decisions, but chances are, you’ve already thought about your big day and what type of wedding you want.

DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT YOU WANT TO HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER – Much of this decision will depend on your budget. For those completely unfamiliar with the wedding industry, a planner can help walk you through each and every decision. For those familiar with the industry who simply do not want the extra

STUCK ON FASHION CHOICES FOR YOUR WEDDING PARTY? Visit several boutiques, and see what they recommend. If you can bring a bridesmaid or two along with you, have them try on several styles for you to consider.

Chances are, the man or woman helping you narrow down your options for attire will give you an honest opinion about what would work best with all the other wedding details in mind.

Good Vendor Relationships & Why They’re Important

The people you hire to help you with your wedding day can make, or in some situations, break your wedding day bliss. While no one sets out to ruin a bride and groom’s wedding, some people just do not see the vision you have for your wedding and try to take over a little too much. Avoiding this is simple – make sure you do more than simply research your vendors online. This means attending bridal shows, making phone calls and setting up meetings BEFORE signing any contracts.

• Make sure your vendors understand and accept your budget. The last thing you want to be hit with is added, last minute costs. This should be clear in your contracts, but be sure you look out for any clause or statement that opens the door for extra fees you may not expect.

You may not think you need to do this much just to hire a professional for your wedding day, and you may not if you have a personality that seems to mesh with many others. However, if you do not do the extra legwork upfront, you might regret some of the decisions you make later.

• Choose vendors who understand your goals. If your vendor consistently tries to talk you into something you never planned to have, it can be a bad sign.

Some vendors will encourage you to add more and more to the big day or try to change your opinions about colors, music or food. While this can be helpful if you feel like you are clueless about how to plan the entire day, it can also take the general idea you had in your head and steer it in a direction you ultimately will not be happy with.

• Remember that your vendors will have many different personalities that will have to combine to create the perfect day.

In some situations, your vendors will actually work together.

When you find one vendor, who seems to understand you completely, ask him or her who is recommended for other areas.

Chances are, he or she has worked with dozens of vendors and knows who can be trusted and who will best achieve your goals for your wedding day.

• Ask for references. Some vendors may have reviews to show you or may be reviewed online by pleased and displeased customers. This will allow you to see why other brides were disappointed and if their complaints were valid.

The most important thing to remember is to avoid signing any contracts until you are sure you are making the right decision. But, don’t wait too long! Many of the best vendors will have limited availability, so you may miss out if you remain indecisive. Bring along a close friend, parent and your future spouse to help you make decisions like these. They know you best and will able to spot issues with potential vendors if you happen to be wearing rose-colored glasses!

The last thing you need is the stress that would accompany nonstop phone calls from your florist, your photographer, the cake people and the string quartet, all wanting to know “what do we do now?!” while you’re having your make-up applied and your nails touched up!

“EXPECT THE BEST, PLAN FOR THE WORST” OK, so they’re not the most inspiring words you will hear related to your wedding, but it is the mantra of many a seasoned event planner!

And with good reason.

Most people will agree that there are few things as romantic as an outdoor wedding celebration! Your friends and family gathered in the shade of a giant oak tree as you make your way down a flower-strewn aisle, all while a light breeze dances across your gown.

Until that light breeze is actually a precursor to a late afternoon thunderstorm that howls through that oak tree, sending leaves and debris hither and yon!

ASK, ASK & ASK AGAIN. Whether you’re planning your outdoor ceremony at a wedding venue, country club, beachside resort or even in your parents’ back yard, before you sign a contract, you need to ask about Plan B. And don’t just settle for an “it won’t rain” or “don’t worry, we’ll handle it.” You, the venue manager and your wedding planner should discuss the bad weather contingency plan in great detail so that everyone concerned is just as familiar with the contingency plan as they are with Plan A. If the outdoor venue you find yourself madly in love with doesn’t offer an indoor option, ask about the ability to bring in your own Plan B. Your wedding planner can work with a local tent rental company to reserve a tent for the outdoor location that you have your heart set on. In the event of a perfect 75-degree, sunny day which leads to you canceling the tent, you will incur financial penalties. Know what they are in advance and consider that it may still be money well spent if having the tent reserved has allowed you to relax for months about Plan B!

PLANS C, D AND E Naturally, rain is the most worried about and planned for weather condition when preparing for outdoor wedding events. It is certainly not the only scenario that you should be ready for! If your event is taking place in a particularly warm climate at a hot time of day, is there available shade?

Does the venue have large fans? Will bottled water be available for your guests? Is your outdoor site prone to being windy? While you can’t do much to prevent your hair from rising on the breezes, you can talk with your floral designer about securing arbors, trellises and other floral décor, so they don’t end up laying where they should be standing. You may also need help keeping linens in place and ensuring that your program attendant has a way to secure the programs until he or she is prepared to hand them to the guests.

Perhaps your event is completely indoors, and you and your snowboarding fiancé have planned a winter wedding so that you can head to the slopes as soon as it’s over! Will the venue’s maintenance staff de-ice the sidewalks and clear new accumulation that happens on your wedding day?

NO SECRETS An informed guest is a happy guest, so don’t hold back information! Let them know in the invitation or on your wedding website that a portion of the celebration has been planned for outdoors. They will be delighted to plan their wardrobes accordingly and perhaps even adjust their arrival time.

(It’s a nice added touch in warmer climates to have special indoor seating for your elderly guests that they can enjoy until just moments before the ceremony begins!) With so many wedding events breaking the traditional church-to-fellowship-hall mode, the more your guests know about your location and agenda in advance, the more relaxed and happy they will be!

LEARN TO LOVE THE B Ideally, you will have a Plan B option that is just as desirable to you as Plan A. And, if it happens that you find yourself going with your contingency plan, roll with it and don’t let it distract you from what is at the very heart of your wedding day! After all, surely your makeup artists and hair stylists have agreed to stay a little late for touch-ups right?

Fantastic Send-Offs

If you’re planning your wedding exit, consider some of these popular ways to end your special day with a send-off that will leave you with great memories and fantastic photographs.

RICE: Rice is the most traditional of all send-offs. As a symbol of prosperity and fertility, rice is a blessing on the happy couple as well as a goodbye. No one knows exactly who started this tradition, but it’s been attributed all the way back to the Egyptians and the Romans. It is a widely held belief that rice is harmful to birds. While there is no evidence to support this, (wild birds often eat out of rice paddy fields), some of your guests may consider it unkind. Rice on the floor can also cause a slipping hazard for guests.

BIRDSEED: As rice became less popular in the 20th century, birdseed took its place. Birdseed is inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

Plus there are tons of ways to creatively present it to guests. However, birdseed can also be a slipping hazard for guests. Some venues have even banned it for this reason. If you choose birdseed, be prepared to have it in every nook and cranny, and make sure you’ve gotten all the shots you want before it gets in your hair. You may also want to purchase it from a wedding vendor as the pet store variety can contain dust and debris.

BUBBLES: Bubbles are a fun and inexpensive send-off. They look great in photos, and everyone loves blowing them! Purchasing bubbles requires no prep and leaves no mess to clean up. Some bubbles can stain depending on the type you purchase and the fabric of your dress. You can purchase bubbles from wedding stores that guarantee they won’t stain and plan on having your dress cleaned soon afterwards to reduce this risk.

SPARKLERS: Sparklers are great for evening departures, but be aware they can burn at up to 2,000 degrees or higher. Giving inebriated guests lit fire sticks may not be the best idea, so if you choose to use sparklers, be discriminating in who gets one, and be vigilant in monitoring their use. When you plan your exit route, make sure you have plenty of room to maneuver through them without being touched. The last thing you want is burn marks on your body or dress.

GLITTER: Glitter and weddings seem to be synonymous these days.

As much as it adds a little sparkle to your big day, if you use glitter, be prepared to pay for the cleanup crew to spend days picking it out of the carpet. If you absolutely must have glitter, go for large pieces to reduce the danger it will end up in someone’s eye and to make clean up easier.

STREAMERS: For an informal event, having guests toss crepe paper rolls into the air creates a festive and fun look. Clean up is fairly easy given how large the streamers are -- just make sure there’s nothing overhead to interfere with their trajectories.

CONFETTI: Confetti looks great in photos for couples who want an energetic send-off. Confetti comes in a variety of styles, colors, shapes and sizes, so you can customize it for your venue. You can have your confetti personalized with your names and wedding date through companies like www.artistryinmotion.com. You can even purchase various delivery methods like poppers and confetti cannons. Some types of confetti, such as that made with tissue paper, are biodegradable, while others are not and will require clean up. Be wary that, depending on the material your confetti is made of, colors may run in the rain and stain your dress.

FLOWER PETALS: Flower petals are a romantic touch, require no clean up and are environmentally friendly. They’re a great choice and can be ordered along with your bouquets. Avoid having to bag them by filling a large container, setting out small cones or cups and letting guests help themselves.

SPRINKLES: These candy confections are a fun alternative because they resemble traditional rice. Be aware though, if sprinkles encounter any moisture, they may stick to hands and stain both the ground and your dress.

RIBBON WANDS: If you want a look reminiscent of a medieval fair, these send-off props can be purchased or made with inexpensive dowel rods.

If you DIY, you can match the ribbons to your exact wedding colors and add jingle bells or other charms. Make sure to cut the rods long enough that they create a canopy effect, rather than waving in front of your faces and blocking the shot.

FAKE SNOW: If you’re having a winter wedding, exiting to falling “snow” will add a little magic. The small, white pieces of confetti genuinely resemble snow in photographs. Be cautious though, many fake snow products are not biodegradable or environmentally friendly. You’ll want to purchase from a company like Save on Crafts that sells eco-friendly wedding confetti www.save-on-crafts.com/confetti.html. Water-soluble, there’s no clean up with this product which melts in the rain, but if your venue insists, you can always hose down any remaining confetti for easy clean up.

Honeymooning: Two Perspectives Honeymooning is a tradition that dates back to the fifth century when the first cycle of the moon was noted during the initial days of marriage. The practice of going on a romantic trip has been commonplace since the early 19th century. For many, the honeymoon is a given – a part of the wedding experience. For others, the honeymoon is optional. Two brides weigh in on the topic from their individual perspectives.

THE BRIDE WHO DID GO ON A HONEYMOON…

BY ERICA EAGLE When we started the wedding planning, the honeymoon planning was just a part of it. We never discussed not going on one. We both put in a lot of research on different places to go. We set a specific budget, and in the end, it came down to where we could get the most “bang for our buck,” which was Cancun, Mexico.

Taking time to relax and de-stress after all of the wedding planning and getting some much needed alone time with my new hubby were the best parts of the honeymoon. Before the wedding, there is so much to do and so many people around constantly; it was so nice to get away from the real world for a little while!

My advice to brides and grooms? Consider the length of your honeymoon…we went for six days which was just long enough but not too long. We also went to an all-inclusive resort and had paid for it months in advance, so not having to worry about anything monetarily all week was awesome.

When discussing a honeymoon, there are a lot of things to think about. For instance, my husband and I purchased a house while we were engaged, so we did not have to worry about house hunting after the wedding. If we were under different circumstances, we might have decided to have a more budget-friendly honeymoon. But, every couple deserves some sort of “getaway,” even if it is just a long weekend in the mountains, beach or somewhere that is just a change of scenery. Trust me, I had a blast planning my wedding, but it was also so stressful! I am very grateful for that time I had to relax with my new hubby, and I think every other couple would appreciate it too no matter how much or how little the cost!

…AND THE BRIDE WHO DIDN’T

BY BROOKE EAGLE My husband and I got married four years ago and made the joint decision to pass on a honeymoon. Why in the world would we skip a honeymoon, you ask? Two main reasons. First, we both cringed at the thought of spending thousands of dollars on an international trip. We are both big savers, and the thought of seeing this money go towards a down payment on a house was much more appealing for us. Second, we honestly aren’t big travelers. I’m not kidding when I say that “traveling” for us means making the 45-minute drive to Lake Norman…or, if we’re feeling extra adventurous, making the three-anda-half-hour drive to Cherry Grove Beach for a long weekend.

Before you think we are too boring…we HAVE traveled a lot in the past. During the past nine years that we’ve been together, we’ve made trips to Riviera Maya in Mexico, Vinalhaven in Maine, several cities in Florida, Los Angeles and New York City (just to name a few). We thoroughly enjoyed all these trips, and I think that may have been an additional reason we didn’t think too much about skipping a honeymoon. We had already traveled together on planes, boats, trains and cars! A honeymoon would’ve been great of course, but we’ve already experienced traveling together many times.

The only negative of not going on a honeymoon was having to answer the question “where are you going on your honeymoon?” with “oh, we aren’t going on one.” Some may have thought that was crazy…but it was our decision! Neither one of us has any regrets. We had a large wedding, and it was extremely nice to go home and relax…without having to think about packing, catching a flight, etc.

Honeymoon Fund

The costs associated with honeymoons have sort of changed hands through the years. While some people believe that since the bride’s family pays for the wedding, the groom’s family should pay for the rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon. In today’s society, very few groom’s families pay for the honeymoon, leaving the bill to the newly married couple. Some of these newlyweds have money in savings or can pay out of pocket for an extravagant vacation, but an increasing number of couples find the added stress of paying for a honeymoon an unwelcome guest during the planning process!

There are options for how to pay for a honeymoon, so make sure you pick the one that is best for you and your new husband or wife!

PLAN AHEAD & SAVE – Shocking, isn’t it? Hopefully, your engagement is long enough for you to plan this method. You should not EXPECT anyone else to pay for your post-wedding trip. While it would be an amazing gift for someone to offer, the best thing you can do is to start saving now. That way, if you do end up getting a last-minute surprise or finding out you can afford more with your money, you’ll have a rainy day fund or money to spend to furnish your home together.

DELAY YOUR HONEYMOON – There is no rule that says you have to go on your honeymoon the day after your wedding. Why not delay it until the weather is nicer, you both have plenty of vacation time saved up at work, or you have plenty of money to avoid the stress of paying for a big trip right after your wedding? Delaying may also allow you to relax more on your honeymoon since you won’t be coming straight from the stress of your wedding day. This will also give you more time to plan the perfect trip!

SET UP A HONEYMOON REGISTRY – There are certainly mixed feelings about this newest option, but many couples have decided to include contributions to a honeymoon fund on their wedding registries. Items on the list include dinners at specific restaurants, the cost of a bottle of wine to be delivered to the room or even lessons for activities like snorkeling or museum tours. Some honeymoon fund sites include “Honeyfund,” “Honeymoon Wishes,” “Traveler’s Joy” and “Wanderable.” All of these can be found online and allow couples to personalize their registry for exactly the kind of honeymoon they are hoping for!

CONSIDER SOMETHING MORE LOW-KEY – If you can’t afford a big, fancy honeymoon, and you do not have the option to register for help, don’t stress it! Just like there is no written rule about when you have to go on a honeymoon, there is no rule saying you have to go somewhere extravagant or somewhere at all. If you prefer, you can take a long weekend at a nearby bed and breakfast or take a road trip somewhere unique that has meaning within your relationship.

You know each other best, and you know what will make you the happiest.

The most important part of your honeymoon is the time spent together. Do what is best for you, and don’t let others tell you what is normal or what you should do…unless you ask! Most importantly, whatever you choose to do to celebrate, have fun, takes lots of pictures and enjoy yourself!
