We celebrate Father’s Day in the month of June. Father’s roles have certainly evolved over recent decades, and for the better! They are more involved than ever in the everyday care of their children. Studies show that children who have involved fathers are more likely to make better grades in school and are less likely to repeat a grade, or be suspended or expelled from school. They are more likely to go to college and find stable employment and less likely to have a teen birth or spend time in jail. Dads are a special breed and we love them dearly. Wishing a special day to my dad Bobby, Tim, the father of my children and to George, who has been a special addition to our family!

Answering the Needs of Survivors

Wake Forest Baptist Health to Launch Cancer Survivorship Clinic Progress in the fight against cancer has produced a need: survivorship care.

Since the 1970s, the number of cancer survivors has tripled and today includes one of every 20 American adults. One in five people will be affected by cancer in some way. Physical and emotional changes brought on by cancer or its treatment can affect patients and families for years.

To answer this need, Wake Forest Baptist Health is establishing a Cancer Survivorship Clinic at its Comprehensive Cancer Center to support all patients, families and caregivers as they plan for life after cancer.

Stacy Wentworth, MD, assistant professor of Radiation Oncology and the clinic’s medical director, describes survivorship as an acknowledgment of the needs that follow cancer treatment. Care teams do a good job of navigating patients through treatment, she says, but are less successful with what follows it.

“For patients, it’s like they’re on this train of diagnosis and treatment,” Wentworth says. “Then that train screeches to a halt.

The patients step off, the train moves on and we as providers pick up the next patient. Patients and their family members are left wondering ‘What’s next? What am I going to do? How are they going to monitor me through follow-up treatment?

Is cancer going to come back?’”

The clinic, its staff and resources are designed to help. Clinic staff will monitor medical needs and more, offering support for a wide range of quality-oflife issues and concerns such as fear of cancer recurrence, return to wellness and financial burden.

The process begins with an orientation visit, where survivors meet with a clinic

physician with expertise in survivorship issues and cancer care. Survivors will receive a comprehensive, personalized care plan that includes a summary of cancer treatment pre-survivorship, recommendations for follow-up care, and strategies for coping and for promoting health.

The clinic—believed to be the first of its kind—is based on already successful models in breast, lymphoma and other areas. Wentworth says other cancer survivors now will have dedicated resources not previously available.

“Cancer survivors already receive care at Wake Forest Baptist Health including in our already robust Bone Marrow Transplant Survivorship Program or Clemmonsbased Breast Cancer Survivorship program.” Wentworth says. “What we haven’t done up to now is to identify this as a transition period for all of our patients. Similar to the transition from their life before cancer, this is now life in the aftermath of cancer. That’s really an innovative idea.”

Providing the clinic for survivors also should help other cancer patients who need care.

“We’re having a hard time getting new patients into our providers’ schedules because they have so many survivors they are seeing,” Wentworth says. “We’re trying to open up some of those spaces for new patients while also providing survivors with a safe place and enhanced services. They’ll get more from survivorship than they will from their provider.”

The clinic team is expected to begin seeing cancer survivors this summer with a larger opening planned for the fall. It will be located on the second floor of the Comprehensive Cancer Center near the Cancer Patient Support Program offices.

The clinic will be set up intentionally to

not resemble a typical cancer clinic, so patients won’t feel as if it’s just another doctor’s visit. The plan is to offer halfdays for survivors of specific cancers—of specific cancers to more effectively group resources that those survivors need.

“We are pledging that every survivor will have an orientation visit, and they’re going to be cared for by people they recognize from their care team,” Wentworth says.

“We are planting the flag and saying, we are offering survivorship. Our goal is to offer survivorship for every cancer survivor because they deserve that level of care.”

Avoiding the Summer Backslide: Keeping Kids Engaged Over the Summer

Summer

break is here, or just about here, for students across the Triad. Students have survived end-ofgrade testing, end-of-year celebrations, and are ready for a break! But is summer break breaking our kids? Most teachers will tell you that it often takes a month or two to help our students recover from their summer break when classes resume in the fall. Most classrooms spend the beginning weeks of school reviewing skills that were forgotten even before starting their current grade-level curriculum. If you do the math, kids are losing up to four months of possible instruction during the year that could otherwise advance them to the next level. This isn’t even taking into consideration that May is also a month spent in review, simply to help prepare students for end-of-year testing and exams at most schools.

So how do we avoid the summer backslide? Some research suggests revisions to academic calendars to allow for more natural breaks throughout the year, versus 10-12 weeks straight in the summer months.

However, academic calendars are at the discretion of boards of education or schools, so considering some of the following suggestions are ways parents can help combat the summer backslide.

Keep Reading and Writing!

Most parents are thankful to see those reading logs take a break for the summer. But encouraging your child to continue daily reading will really help them stay engaged and maintain the skills they have learned.

To keep it from seeming like a school-related chore, let your child pick out books or magazines they are

interested in. Before a vacation, head to the library or local bookstore and allow your child to find something of interest. Older students may have required summer reading projects for school, so be sure you have your child take care of those requirements, but be sure to allow them “fun reading” time to pursue reading something of interest (yes, even comic books!).

Encourage your child to keep a summer journal or a vacation journal. Have your child write age-appropriatelength passages every few days, or daily during special trips. Include pictures for a fun addition (you can use either hand-drawn or printed-out photos, and paste them in the journal). Even an electronic, typed journal is helpful in keeping children engaged in writing (and a great tool for those who struggle with writing). This also becomes a nice keepsake over the years!

Technology to Consider …Not meaning Fortnite here! While it is certainly okay for students to have some fun with their favorite video games here and there over the summer break, be sure to explore educational technology available to intermingle with your child’s summer activities. Apps

like Epic!, a paid- subscription app for about $7/mo. that provides access to thousands of books for students 12 and under, are a great starting point. For older students, consider apps like Audible, that provide access to thousands of books and offer a read-aloud option (great for car rides!).

Keep those math calculation skills up with apps/websites such as IXL, Khan Academy, BuzzMath or Brainscape. Take advantage of “real- life moments” to help encourage your child to stay engaged in math. Have them help count money at the grocery store, have them keep a time schedule to work on time-telling skills, give older students a budget for upcoming trips, and have them record their spending in a journal or spreadsheet. Math is everywhere; find creative ways to keep it going!

Consider a Scheduled Academic Camp or Tutoring The best way to keep the summer regression at bay is to maintain some form of normal academic schedule, if even just for a short period of time. Consider a Summer Academic Camp or weekly one-hour tutoring sessions. These routes still allow for plenty of fun time, pool time and vacation time, but they help students keep engaged in the academic structure and schedule associated with school. Keeping engaged in this way helps the transition back to school in August seem a little more natural.

There are area programs that offer academic-based camps, such as the 5-week academic enrichment camp at The Piedmont School. For students who are at-risk or not meeting grade-level expectations, academic camps and/or weekly tutoring may need to be prioritized, as the summer backslide can often hurt these students the most.

Find Balance Students certainly need time to recoup from a long school year and fun is definitely in order! Find a balance that makes sense for your family and for your summer plans. Maybe it looks like an hour a day of academic-related activities, perhaps like an academic summer camp or tutoring, or it may be squeezing in academic activities simultaneously with your planned vacations. However it works for you, be sure not to let summer break break your child’s progress!

Have Your BEST SUMMER EVER at YMCA Summer Exploration Academy

ummertime is always a favorite time of the year for kids. Parents, on the other hand, have to find ways to engage their children and keep them entertained, from when school ends until it starts up again. Luckily, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has families covered with summer camp options for everyone. From traditional camp to sports-themed camps, and even residential camp options, every child in your family can find a place they will love at the Summer Exploration Academy.

Over the last year, the YMCA has been working to change their camp experience to help children stay engaged in learning throughout the summer. The new experience, now called the “Summer Exploration Academy,” will focus on STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—and literature skills in addition to encouraging kids to explore outdoor play and physical activity. Vice President of Youth Development, Kim McClure, said, “We have rebranded our summer camp to focus on high-quality, safe programming with an emphasis on education throughout the summer. You will notice that reading, STEM activities, and even college and career prep for teens will be themes throughout our programs. We want to help children stay engaged in learning throughout the summer by incorporating learning into fun activities they will enjoy.”

This summer, the YMCA will do a soft launch of several evidencebased curriculum programs to keep summer learning going strong.

Kidz Lit and Kidz Math—activities that allow kids to have fun without even knowing it—will be added to summer camp programs across the board. This curriculum will incorporate literature and math skills throughout the summer and will be done several times a week with campers. They will also celebrate National Summer Learning Week from July 8th to the 13th, by placing a special focus on learning during this time.

Another evidence-based program they will use this summer is “Coordinated Approach To Child Health,” also known as CATCH. This program focuses on healthy eating and physical activity.

McClure went on to say, “Part of our focus on healthy eating will include the lunches that we serve at all the camps. We understand that summer can be a time of food insecurity for some children and we can use our camps as an opportunity to feed them healthy meals and teach them about healthy eating.” CATCH is also a great opportunity for campers to get outside. “Our campers spend a lot of time outside,” says McClure “We want them to learn to enjoy outdoor play and that there are more options than TV, gaming, and tablets. We do bring them inside during the hotter hours of the day to enjoy swimming and reading. It’s a good balance.” With the combination of the learning programs and the health-focused program, they are able to make their camps a wellrounded experience for campers.

There are a variety of camps available at the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. Traditional camps are available at all of the YMCA branches for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Some of the branches offer preschool and teen options, as well. YMCA Camp Hanes offers two options for campers. There is residential camp, where parents drop campers off on Sunday and pick them up on the following Saturday. Day camp, another available option, is offered from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and campers can take a bus from a few different branch locations to spend the day at YMCA Camp Hanes. There are also options for sports camps and themed camps throughout the YMCA branches. You also have the option to sign your child up for swim lessons or sports camps during their traditional camp day. They will be transported to those activities by the YMCA staff.

The options are endless and there really is something for everyone at YMCA of Northwest North Carolina’s Summer Exploration Academy.

Entering into the world requires an immediate understanding of self and the surprise of accepting who you were all along.

Consider, if you will, some practical advice concerning you and your future!

Know yourself well The one-size fits all solution for living a happy and healthy life does not exist. It helps if you know your drive and degree of expectation to finish tasks; your interests, whether they are long marathons, quick sprints, or slow-meandering walks; as well as your need to value simplicity or over-indulgence. By knowing your patterns of ambition, only you can succeed when it comes to establishing a work ethic, controlling finances, and quickly surrendering to change.

Who do you want to become?

In yearbooks, one of the most popular statements written is “never change.” You’ll find it doesn’t matter who you were in school. The experiences in those future chapters will transform your thoughts, hobbies, and better define the term of achievement. You will improve with age. Set a few realistic goals for yourself and make them happen!

Maintain those childhood friendships Social media has made the ties of friendship easier to maintain. While you may not want to hold tight to everyone, make a promise to those who offered unconditional support and friendship during your childhood. Perhaps not today or in the next five years, but there will be a time when those friends will be an anchor during moments of heartbreak, and there will be many. And, they, too, will need you just as much!

Make the introduction, expand your group of friends Hold out your right hand, look the individual in the eye, and state your name. Meeting as many people as possible forges connections, and perhaps may introduce you to a new group, activity, or experience. As you learn more about others, others certainly will help you learn more about yourself.

Say yes to traveling If your friends want to plan a trip for the weekend or to a week-long destination internationally, try and make it happen. Seeing the world is much easier in your 20s, with

fewer financial obligations to hold you back. You’ll always be glad you took the time to experience new places and cultures in pleasant company.

Hold high expectations for yourself In adulthood, you no longer have to go along with the crowd or feel peer pressure. No one will push you around or take advantage of your kindness if you create expectations for yourself. Think about your values and mentally define what values you hold dear. Remember, not everyone you meet will be genuine or honest. It’s vital you learn how to end dysfunctional or over-bearing relationships. Control comes when you maintain higher standards.

Career decisions Don’t assume college is the definitive answer to success.

While the piece of paper certifying your education in a specific field has weight and merit, it is not the only means toward financial independence. Learning a trade may open the door to establishing a business, and perhaps even security. Consider your options, and talk with as many people as possible, especially if you seek to join the military, National Guard, or pursue opportunities through the State Department.

Calvary Day School Initiates Institute to Build Future Leaders

CDS’s Student Leadership Institute is designed to “provide students with the necessary training and tools to be Christlike leaders in the domain in which they are being called.”

“Our Leadership Institute challenges every CDS student to step into the important role of leading self and others,” said Head of School Richard Hardee. “Under the direction of Max Floyd, the Institute Director, students are prepared to lead through the various seasons of life and the changing circumstances of life. It is a common desire for parents to be interested in their children becoming leaders, and it is our privilege to pursue leadership training from a biblical perspective.” This initiative comes at a time when the need has never been greater, said Floyd.

“One of the aspects of the program I am most proud of is how our students have taken the initiative to fulfill their hearts’ calling to serve and lead within our community,” Floyd said.

“According to the most recent research on this generation of young persons, our young people are more disengaged, lonelier, more depressed and more to themselves than any generation before it. With such trends being observed, CDS has an enormous opportunity to make a difference in our world. Instead of a continued decline in effective leadership, we believe that we can make an impactful difference in the lives of those entrusted to our care.”

This is just one example of many hands-on applications students have taken part in or organized throughout the year.

“With courageous, informed and committed young people living their leadership lives to the fullest, the Lord Christ will be glorified, His people engaged in purposeful work and the Great Commission obediently followed,” Floyd declared.

A group of Leadership class students organized a whiffle ball tournament this school year as a fundraising effort to help a local family in need.

“It was wonderful to see our students apply the leadership training from the Institute and have a direct impact on a family,” Floyd reflected.

In time, Floyd said he hopes to see the Institute expand its community outreach and allow students to fulfill whatever need or service is put on their hearts to do.

The Institute began in the fall of 2017 as an elective class, while incorporating foundational leadership principle training such as “leading self, leading others,” into weekly advisory meetings. The Institute’s Leadership 201 class became a required course for all CDS sophomores to take, as well as an elective option for other students the following year. During this course, specific leadership skills are taught, cultivated and demonstrated through a variety of educational mediums, as well as with projects, guest speakers and other tools.

CDS sophomore Nate Bozeman said he enjoys all the different activities and experiences included in the Leadership Institute.

“We get to learn a leader’s foundation, a foundation for teamwork, and then put those skills to use in different activities,” Bozeman emphasized.

He said through the leadership course, he has learned “how to think like a leader, the tools a leader needs and most of all how to act as a leader in different aspects of life.”

CDS sophomore Jarrett Mozingo said he values the “crucial life skills” he has learned through the Leadership Institute thus far.

“The class is a great way to further knowledge of leadership from a Christian standpoint,” Mozingo noted of the Institute’s Leadership 201 course.

CDS sophomore Anna Collins agreed, saying, “The principle of leadership is good for everyone for life, as we are/will all be leaders, as we all influence someone.”

The Institute will continue to expand during the next two years, adding additional course options, so that students may complete four years of the Student Leadership Institute upon graduation.

In addition, the Institute will include an opportunity for students to attend a summer leadership camp in Alaska.

Camp Leadership Alaska will be held each summer in Kodiak Island, Alaska.

“This is a great way for students in the Leadership Institute to have hands-on leadership experience and really put the skills they have learned in class to use,” Floyd said. “We are excited about our first Camp Leadership Alaska this summer and the impact this camp will have on our students’ lives, as well as on the students we will be mentoring in Alaska.”

Students along with Floyd will conduct a four-day leadership camp for the youth of the city of Kodiak, focusing on the key principles of leadership needed for young people to be successful in the multiple environments in which they live every day.

Bozeman is one of the small group of students joining Floyd for the inaugural Camp Leadership Alaska excursion. He said he is excited to explore Alaska and equally excited to have an opportunity to put his leadership skills to the test in an environment such as summer camp.

“As beneficial as it is to lead in our own day-to-day lives, I believe that using what I have learned in a classroom and applying it in a totally different environment will be both eye-opening and educational,” Bozeman shared. “I really hope to get some hands-on experience with being a different type of leader and with a different audience than what I am used to.”

Floyd said teaching students how to take the leadership principles taught through the Institute and apply them with a Biblical mindset in every relationship in life is the ultimate goal. “It is our hope that through the Leadership Institute we will create leaders of the future who have the disciplines of a walk with Christ,” Floyd summed up.

How Much Should I Spend?

A new 250cc bike can be bought for around $3,000, and the price goes even lower, as with all motorized transportation, with a used bike. Get something you can develop your skills with, and trade up when you’re ready.

How to Buy a Motorcycle For many, few experiences rival riding a motorcycle across an idyllic backdrop – whether it’s a cruise down the coast, a drive through the mountains or a trip through the countryside.

If you’re considering buying your first motorcycle, read on for some things to consider.

Education The first step, of course, is to develop the skills needed to safely operate a motorcycle. A safety course with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) is a great place to start. Visit www.msf-usa.org or call 800-446-9227 for details.

Time for Research Dealerships are great places to view a range of bikes. Visit a reputable local dealer to explore your options and have your questions answered. They have experts who can help size you for a bike. If you’re looking to test drive a bike, it probably won’t happen at the dealership due to liability issues. It’s not unusual for someone to purchase a motorcycle and ride it for the first time when they leave the lot.

Once you settle on a size and how you are going to use the bike, turn to Google. With research and reviews, you’ll be able to zero in on what you want.

Buying New vs. Used When you buy new, you’ll know exactly what you are getting, along with the benefits of a warranty. The price will be higher and it’ll begin to depreciate when you leave the lot.

If you’re a beginner, a used bike may be your best option.

The major benefit is a lower price, but you won’t know how the bike has been used.

A safety class will prepare you for what to expect. If you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and have never been on a bike and try to ride, chances are you will not get a permit. Pick Your Style There many kinds of motorcycles, each designed for different types of needs: speed, commuting, different road surfaces, weather conditions, long-distance touring, etc. Pick the style that is right for you.

When seated, you should be able to rest both feet flat on the ground without having to be on tiptoes – so the bike doesn’t tip over. Handlebars and controls should be within easy reach.

Choose a model that’s easy for you to engage and disengage the centerstand. A good rule of thumb for bikes: if it feels too heavy, it probably is.

Motorcycles generally range from 125cc to 1400cc (cc = cubic centimeters – the size of the bike’s engine). A smaller model with a 250cc to 300cc engine can make a great starter or commuter bike. If you are planning on doing a lot of highway riding, you may want one with an engine in the 500cc to 750cc range so you can easily keep up with traffic.

Most importantly, buy the bike that’s best for your height and weight. Keeping a 300-pound bike balanced on two wheels is

When looking for a used bike, compare the odometer reading with the condition of the bike. Does it look right? Look for rust and scratches - a weathered seat and faded paint means the bike has seen a hard life. Check for new or aftermarket parts that have replaced broken ones. Look for oil leaks. The bike should start easily. If it's hard to start or billows clouds of smoke – especially blue smoke – be cautious.

Design an English Garden

you may be thinking.

“How could I possibly recreate an English garden in my backyard?” The concept of clean lines in a symmetrical architectural design, and pathways set by flowers or a boxwood hedge on each side, has aspects appealing to gardeners and nature lovers alike. If you have ever wanted a statue, rose garden, or a section of wildflowers, then, perhaps extracting a few or all aspects of an English garden may appeal to you more than first realized. Ready?

CREATE A PLAN! First, think about what you would love to have in your backyard. Ideas such as designated pathways, “L-shaped” garden beds, a rose garden, a sitting area, and a pool of water may be at the top of your list; then, measure the intended space in width and length. Create a grid, such as equating one foot to one block, and then design. It is wise to start with the center, including a focal point, and branch outward. Paths, made from pea gravel, stone, or brick, should be wide and straight. Remember, you’ll want to present a symmetrical design.

TIP: Study photos of English gardens to collect ideas for your own space.

CLEAN LINES AND UNIQUE SHAPES Traditional English gardens are rectangular or square. In perusing pictures, we see that traditional gardens feature a low hedge, usually of boxwood, that forms “rooms” to define space. Although that is a great choice, consider spacing the shrub to offer an open and spacious look. Another option to enhance the background or create a wall is to add tall flowers, such as Lavender, coneflowers, delphinium, or roses.

TIP: By planting different shrubs together, limbs can weave in and out to form a tapestry effect. Consider marking your corners, perhaps in an “L-Shape” to impose defined lines, and maintain the shape.

BRIGHT AND COLORFUL PLANTS Arrangements of bright and colorful flowers not on ground level, but raised or elevated, add abundance and warmth to a location, whether large or cozy.

A trellis or arbor are options. Rather than mow, consider planting a variety of groundcovers, creeping thyme, heat-resistant ornamental grasses, or allowing nature to take over and planting wildflowers.

To design arrangements, especially against a fence or border, use string to mark each growing variety; for instance, by placing three to five-foot tall flowers in the back, one-foot to three-feettall ones in the middle, and 14-to-18-inch plants along the front. Selecting plant varieties is an essential step in designing a garden.

While the height variation is vital, also consider each plant’s soil, light, and especially, water requirements. For instance, lavender would not flourish next to a plant, such as day lilies or iris, which thrives in moist soil.

TIP: Add your favorite herbs to compliment your garden and promote the arrival of pollinators. At the end of the season, herbs help the most glorious flowers reach surprising heights.

TIP: Add spring and fall bulbs to enhance the growing season and extend color throughout the year.

FOCAL POINT In designing an architectural space of lines, the eye will need to rest on one single object or focal point. It can be a colorful vase or pot resting on a pedestal, or a tall concrete stand surrounded by flowers. You’ll instantly know when the right object well suits the scale of the garden, and offers balance. To create sharp visual lines, consider placing the focal point aligned with a door or path.

While designing an English garden favors symmetrical design, be creative! The garden will reflect your unique personality and needs. Add a bench, birdhouses, birdbaths, and enjoy!

Friday, May 10th, the Kaleidoscope Ball was held in downtown WinstonSalem at the Millennium Center. This was the second annual event benefiting Kaleideum.

In July 2016, the Children’s Museum and Sci Works merged thus forming Kaleideum.

Their mission is: Inspiring wonder, curiosity and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery.

The title sponsor of the event was BB&T. The Event Chairs were Susan & Raul Colon and Amy & Preston Yates. The Honorary Chairs were Cathy and Chris Pace.

Winston-Salem Chief of Police, Catrina Thompson was the Keynote Speaker. Her message highlighted how a museum such as Kaleideum can help bridge the cultural divide in a community.

Guests enjoyed both a silent and live auction as well as a raffle and a Whiskey Wall, where they were able to bid on unique whiskeys. Dinner, dancing and cocktails were enjoyed by over 290 guests. Entertainment was provided by Irresistible Grove.

“As part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County educational landscape, Kaleideum encourages individuals from different backgrounds to play and learn together,” said Elizabeth Dampier, Executive Director. “When we are able to learn alongside individuals who are different from us, we are able to learn more and open our minds to different perspectives. We can change our minds, tackle problems from different angles, and persevere when there are challenges. This kaleidoscopic thinking, and with the support of our community through the Annual Fund and the Kaleidoscope Ball, it is what happens at Kaleideum every single day.”

Making Pre-K a Priority in Forsyth County

children in Forsyth County deserve the opportunity to succeed in school and in life. Brain science has confirmed what most parents already know: namely, that the first five years of life are a time of tremendous physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.

These years are especially critical for the construction of a child’s developing brain.

Unfortunately, too many children in Forsyth County are not reaching their full potential.

Nearly half are not proficient in reading by third grade. From there, it’s hard to catch up. A Harvard University study ranks Forsyth County as the 5th worst out of 2,873 counties in the nation for helping poor children move up the economic ladder.

Fortunately, there are proven ways to help children enter kindergarten ready to achieve socially, emotionally, and academically. Extensive research over the past forty years shows that high-quality Pre-K programs are a wise investment that close educational achievement gaps and improve health and well-being far into adulthood.

A recent Duke University study, authored by Kenneth A. Dodge, who spoke at the Annual Raising Every Child Luncheon last month, followed more than one million North Carolina public school children and found significant

benefits from the state-funded Smart Start and More at Four (NC Pre-K) programs. These early childhood programs “…continued to have positive effects on the population of targeted students…as they progressed through middle school. Higher levels of program funding improved students’ math and reading scores, decreased the likelihood that they would be placed into special education, and reduced the probability of repeating a grade. The More at Four program effects varied significantly across subgroups within the population, with larger positive impacts on children from less well-educated, more economically disadvantaged, and African-American families.”

Forsyth County is poised to provide all families with the opportunity to enroll their four-year-old children in affordable, high-quality Pre-K programs. We can build on the solid standards and Best Practices of current programs funded by the North Carolina Pre-K Program (NC Pre-K) and provided in classrooms in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, at the Family Services Head Start program, and in private community childcare centers.

There’s still much work to do. Any expansion of the current system will require improvements in quality, additional facilities, more qualified and bettercompensated teachers, and the establishment of an administrative structure to ensure uniform practices and positive outcomes.

We know what needs to be done and how to do it. But to make this vision a reality, support is needed from elected officials, business and civic leaders, and everyday people committed to the well-being of our community. The time has come for Forsyth County to make Pre-K a Priority.

Even in the very best pharmacies, highly trained professional pharmacists, like the rest of us humans, can make mistakes. Sometimes errors stem from something as simple as a misplaced decimal point. These tips will help ensure that the medicine you bring home from the pharmacy is the medicine your family should be taking:

Get all your prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy. Be cautious about ordering medications from an online pharmacy. If a pharmacist knows you, he or she can easily access your history and answer your questions in person. Thus, it’s more likely that potential drug interactions will be discovered.

Tell the pharmacist if there is something you forgot to mention to the prescribing doctor.

For example, if you have a drug allergy or are taking other medicines or over-the-counter products, but forgot to tell the doctor, let the pharmacist know. A pharmacist is a medication expert and can consult references about drug interactions and side effects.

Open your bag and look at your medicine before you leave the pharmacy. Question anything that doesn’t seem right to you. For example, if you have taken the same medicine previously, do the color, size, and shape of the pills look the same as you remember?

Make sure that the drug name and strength imprinted on the pills is correct.

If there is anything you are unsure about, such as the correct dosage, side effects, or how to store the medicine properly, ask the pharmacist (not the pharmacy technician).

Pediatric medication dosages that are determined by a child’s weight are at higher risk for errors. As a safeguard, confirm a child’s medication dosage with the pharmacist.

Preventing Medicine Errors at Home

Do not store your family’s medications in the same place you store the medications you give your pets.

Thoroughly read the label on your medicine.

Some medicines must be taken with food, or have food or alcohol restrictions. Some medicines should never be chewed, crushed or diluted. Some medicines make it unsafe to drive or operate machinery. Check the label each time you take the medicine to be sure you haven’t picked up a different medicine in a similar container. Many errors can be prevented this way.

Never take medicines in the dark. Always turn on a light so you can be sure you are taking, or giving your child, the right medicine in the right dose.

4.

Don’t measure liquid medications with household tableware—the teaspoons and tablespoons you use at the dinner table. Use the more accurate measuring spoons normally used in cooking. If a syringe or measuring cup comes with the medication, use that instead.

5.

If your doctor allows you to save money by splitting pills, be aware of the risk of getting uneven doses if pills are not correctly split. For accuracy, use a pill-splitting device or ask your pharmacist to split your pills.

Medications are powerful. It is vitally important to be sure that you and your family are taking them safely. Be sure you understand why a medicine was prescribed and what your doctor expects it to accomplish. If you have questions about your or your family’s medicines, don’t hesitate to call the pharmacist. Educating patients is part of their job.

Giving Sick Children and Their Families Hope

BY CAROLYN S. PETERSON origins, as it did in my case, and it was pushing my left eye out and over to the left. My doctor explained to my parents that an emergency, life-saving surgery needed to be performed immediately.

Dr. Jim Thompson, who attended church with my family, performed the surgery, entering through the bridge of my nose to access the source of the infection. I stayed in the hospital a little over two weeks in post-op to receive antibiotics. The condition returned less than 30 days later and a second surgery had to be done, with an additional hospital stay of a little less than a week,” said Austin. This was not how the Highsmith family, or any family, wants to spend their Christmas…in a hospital with a very sick little girl. However, Austin’s parents, Johnny and Dawn, had a strong faith and relied on that during this time of their lives.

There

are times in our lives which, taken in totality, become moments when we say, “I made it through,” but those can also be the experiences that later show us just how precious life is. For Austin Highsmith Garces, Winston-Salem native, actress, and producer, her time in Brenner Children’s Hospital when she was 2½ years old led her to write and illustrate her first book, The Miracle Tree, to inspire children and their families going through uncertain times when dealing with an illness.

A Christmas Miracle Just before Christmas, 1983, Austin Highsmith Garces’ mom dropped her off at the babysitter’s home. Little 2½-year-old Austin went down for a nap, but an hour later Austin woke up with a swollen, purple lump over her entire left eye.

The baby sitter called Austin’s mom, and a visit to the pediatrician led straight to the ER. “An MRI confirmed what the doctors thought; I had a condition called post orbital cellulitis, which is an infection that can have unknown

“From what my parents told me, they were terrified, filled with fear and worry.

My doctor told them I had a 50/50 chance of survival, because a surgery that close to the brain is very serious.

My parent’s faith has always been their rock, which they passed on to each of us kids. When my dad received the news that I, his daughter, was fighting for her life, he did the only thing he knew how to do, he prayed. There was a Christmas tree at Brenner Children’s Hospital, and he knelt at the foot of the tree and prayed for God to save my life.

As he prayed, he promised God that if my life were saved, he would return with our family every Christmas after that to say a prayer of thanksgiving in front of that tree. We haven’t missed a year in 35; we gather around the tree, hold hands and say a prayer. I always cry, as does my dad. It was this experience of 35 years ago, specifically that time in 1983, as well as visits to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in Tampa, FL, that inspired me to write and illustrate, The Miracle Tree, Austin commented. Austin starred in Dolphin Tale and Dolphin Tale 2, so she would

visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the location where the movies were filmed, and on her trips, she would stop by the children’s hospital in Tampa.

During one of Austin’s visits to the children’s hospital in Tampa, there was one last room to visit. “We were told the little girl in the room could possibly get sicker if we went inside, so we stayed in the doorway. When I looked at the little girl, it was like looking at pictures of myself all those years ago. She had a swollen, purple eye and I asked her mother if she had post orbital cellulitis, and she gasped and said, “Yes!” I shared my story and she began to cry.

Sharing my story gave her hope and gave me the idea to make my story into a book, in hopes of inspiring more kids during their struggles,” stated Austin.

Sharing Your Story, Sharing Your Faith “The book, The Miracle Tree, tells of my journey going into the hospital, my stay in the hospital, my recovery, and of our family’s tradition of visiting the tree each year. One of the main things I wanted with the book was to give sick kids visibility and also to break down the hospital for them. It’s a very scary place and kids can feel overwhelmed. I want kids to feel normal and give them inspiration. I have been an artist my entire life, drawing and winning awards throughout grade school, and I studied Fine Arts at UNC-Chapel Hill, so I not only wrote the book, I illustrated it, too!

I want to also establish ‘The Miracle Tree Foundation,’ a 501 (c)(3), with a portion of the proceeds from my book going toward funding research and treatment for kids with rare illnesses and conditions. We hope to partner with already established organizations once we are up and running,” Austin.

Making Memories and S’Mores: A Practical Guide to Camping with Kids

any of us have childhood memories of time spent around a campfire in the woods for a weekend camping adventure with our parents—barefoot, dirty and loving every second of it. As much as we want to replicate these memories with our own children, where do we start? The camping planning anxiety is real, but can be easily overcome by focusing on three basic building blocks of the perfect camping vacation: Location, Supplies/Food, and Activities.

Location The first thing to be done is to pick a location for your camping adventure. There are many factors that go into this selection, such as environment and intended purpose of the vacation. State and National Parks are great options as they are affordable, and the proceeds from the camping fees are fed directly into keeping our beautiful parks viable for future generations. If you go onto the government website for campgrounds, you can search based on what amenities you are looking for, as well as giving a radius of distance from the zip code you live in. If you are tent camping, you can be relatively low-maintenance, but if you have an RV, make sure to find a camper-friendly site. There are also many campgrounds in North Carolina that are close to swimming opportunities, at both lakes and the ocean.

When you have chosen a campground, make sure to check the site map before you book a particular campsite, to confirm you chose the perfect site for your family.

The perfect site can mean different things to different families—if you have young pottytraining-age children it will probably be beneficial to be close to the bathrooms. If you are staying at one of the many campgrounds in North Carolina that have swimming beaches, and you know this is an important part of your vacation, it may be important for you to pick a site close to the beach.

Supplies/Food One of the most inconvenient things to have to do when on vacation is make a last-minute trip to the store. To prevent this, make sure to fully plan all of your meals and ensure you have all of the appropriate supplies for your trip. Every family will need slightly different supplies, depending on how you function on vacation. So make sure to prepare your own personal list at least a week in advance—this will give you time to add things you forgot about, as they come to you. General things to make sure to put on the list are items such as a tent,

clothes, toiletries, a sleeping bag, a blow-up mattress, firewood (only if you are going to a nearby campground; otherwise, you will have to purchase it close to the campsite, due to the potential of introducing foreign insect species), a lighter, pocket knife, camping/cooking utensils, a cooler (preferably filled with food), etc. For tired parents, one of the most important things to remember to bring is a stainless steel (to prevent breaking) French press with pre-ground coffee. At the end of the day, though, the absolute most important three things to remember to pack are Graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows.

Activities Now that you’ve picked out and set up your campsite, what are you going to do on your camping vacation? Many activities can be done anywhere and be prepared in advance; one of the most popular activities for kids is a nature scavenger hunt. You can create one from clip art and print it out, make it by hand, or even find a free template online—but regardless of how you create it, this would include pictures/descriptions of items that can be found in nature by the children. For older children, a nature journal is a great activity, especially for children who love drawing and/or writing. Tell them to find something in nature that speaks to them, and then write a short paragraph on why, and add a photo. Or maybe create a comic book strip about the nature items they find and how they imagine they interact with each other. Encouraging your kids to use their imagination and telling stories around the campfire is the perfect way to end your day when camping. Remember that at the end of the day, the most important thing to do is to have fun, so even if all you do is hang around the campsite and let the kids play in the dirt – if they had fun, then that is a win.

Carolina credit unions recently launched a campaign inviting residents to Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union.

year marked the 21st-annual RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem. The 11-day festival included 175 films, including 71 features and 101 shorts from 47 countries.

The festival also incorporated a broad range of special events, high-profile regional premieres, celebrity tributes, family matinees, classic retrospectives and a mixture of panel discussions and parties.

RiverRun is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to the role of cinema as a conduit of powerful ideas and diverse viewpoints. Their mission is to foster a greater appreciation of cinema and a deeper understanding of the many people, cultures and perspectives of the world through regular interaction with great films and filmmakers.

RiverRun provides entertainment for people from all walks of life. The Academy Award-qualifying film festival showcases a variety of narrative, documentary, student, animated and short films from all genres. Attendees have a variety of venue options throughout downtown to enjoy these unique films, including outdoor screenings. “Our 2019 RiverRun International Film Festival features a diverse collection of over 170 films from nearly four dozen countries across the

globe,” said RiverRun Executive Director Rob Davis. “Each of these films is reflective of our mission to engage our audiences in an exploration of new and divergent cultures, and perspectives through the art of film.”

This year RiverRun featured local people and organizations that are making a difference in a special section titled “Close to Home.” Calm Before…the Rising Storm was screened as a North Carolina Shorts (short film) by a California filmmaker. The film tells the story of a group of high school kids from New England who formed a band, The Rising Storm, and recorded an album just for fun, only to have it rediscovered by record collectors decades later. Three of the six band members live in NC today, while the other three reside in New England. One of them, Dr. Richard Weinberg, lives right here in Winston-Salem, and is a professor at Wake Forest School of Medicine.

The band has reunited periodically to play at music events that have taken them to Boston, Hoboken, London, and Rotterdam. Their most recent ‘gig’ was playing at their 50th class reunion, an event covered by a July 2017 feature story in the New York Times. Their 1967 album, Calm Before, has been described by The All Music Guide to Rock ‘N’ Roll as “one

of the rarest and most respected garage band albums.” And it continues to be a hot commodity today: it was reissued in 2018 on vinyl and CD and is also available on Pandora and Apple Music.

Another local short film this year was Blind Adventure Camp. This film is about a camp for the seeing-impaired run by the local organization, “Industries for the Blind.”

The last short film was Extraordinary People, co-directed by University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) professor Laura Hart McKinny.

This short documentary followed six adults across the autism spectrum who, despite individual challenges, have found meaningful value and a deep sense of pride from their work at a business called “Extraordinary Ventures.”

Handling the Mom Shamers

It

is hard enough being a mother— either new or experienced— without the onslaught of the infamous “Mom Shamers.” Yes, “mom-shaming,” (making a mother feel ashamed about a decision she has made in relation to motherhood), is happening to mothers around the country at an alarming rate. Whether it be the number of children one decides to have, whether or not to go back to work after maternity leave, or how to feed baby (breast or bottle), when it comes to motherhood, there seem to be countless, unsolicited advisors.

The sad situation is that oftentimes these comments come from those closest to us— family. The University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital conducted a national poll surveying 475 mothers of children aged 5 and younger. According to the study, “The moms who felt criticized said their own parents (37 percent), co-parent (36 percent) and in-laws (31 percent) were the most frequent to pass judgment.” The reflection of this evidence shows that the highest volume of interactions unfortunately happens with family members.

What do the experts advise on handling these opinionated people? Are there methods of turning these negative comments into positive ones? Take some deep breaths, mamas. Read on for a few tips on how to deal with this phenomenon and turn it into something positive.

METHOD #1 It is all about a positive spin. Supermodel Chrissy Tiegen is notorious for her honest, down-to-earth approach to motherhood. Her Instagram has countless real-life photos and explanations for how she handles life with her children. While her photos are inspirations for many, some of her followers choose to make harsh comments about her actions. In response to one follower, upset that she was no longer breastfeeding her baby, Tiegen quickly put the person in their place with the witty remark that her husband John Legend, “never breastfed Miles.”

METHOD #2 “It is not you; it is them.” Often these comments are a reflection of one’s own insecurities, when it comes to parenthood. Everyone has flaws.

Unfortunately, rather than fix their own flaws, some out there find comfort in picking out others’ areas to work on. When on the receiving end of a negative comment, try to take a step back, breathe and remember that this is more about that person’s insecurity than your own.

METHOD #3 Remember, the coin has two sides. While it is hard to be the one receiving the mom-shaming, it is vital to realize we may have done the same thing ourselves. Whether it be the small act of eye-rolling when we see a mother with a screaming toddler in line at the grocery store, or the smirk we make after a mom yells at her teenage son to get off his phone while at church, we are just as guilty through these small acts.

METHOD #4 No long response needed! It is easy to get down on the level of a momshamer by resorting to a sarcastic and demeaning comeback. However, the easiest way to stop that person in their tracks begins with a simple, “I’m okay with my decision to ________” statement. When questioned about why a child is allowed access to an iPad at night, all one has to say is “I’m okay with my decision to have my child on their device, thank you.” This gives the control back to the receiver, not the one disgracing them.

METHOD #5 “It takes a village to raise a child.” There may be times when unsolicited advice has good intention. While it may seem that older Aunt Sheila is always giving advice on how to handle a colicky baby, recall that often this advice comes from a good place. Remember the old saw, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This is true when it comes to child rearing. Those older relatives may have just the tips and tricks that can help your child.

Think Outside the Bottle

months of Mother Nature’s gloom and doom across North Carolina, Summer is a more than welcome season! The sunshine is begging for you to come outside and bask in its rays while you drink up the warmth of the season.

Whether you’re piling kids into the car to head to the park or lacing up your sneakers to go for a run on the Greenway, the sunshine can do more than make for a beautiful day.

This season, think outside the bottle and remember that while sunscreen is a great resource, that’s just one step toward keeping your skin safe.

Start With a Good Base As more research and studies have been done over the last few decades, manufacturers have kept their consumers’ needs in mind and created more and more everyday products that include SPF. Before you even think about where you’re headed for the day, there are everyday moisturizers, hair products and makeup with SPF levels of 15 and higher that you can include, as you get ready in the morning. While a 30+ SPF is recommended for most skin-care products, putting in the effort to find items that specifically include sun protection is a great way to ensure you’re protected. Head over to your local drugstore and it’s easy now to find hairspray, lotion, concealer and foundation, all with SPF. Remember to Layer Up While you may have splurged on matching swimsuits for your family’s upcoming beach vacation, make sure to add some coordinating hats next time you’re at the store. According to the Skin Care Foundation, “Melanomas of the scalp and neck make up 6% of all melanomas and 10% of all melanoma deaths.” It’s

Sometimes, things like social media or a morning talk show feature higher-end products that make you question whether or not the products you have on hand are truly doing the best job protecting you. Always read the labels and do your research on products, but remember that there are more than enough budget-friendly options that won’t break the bank. If you have sensitive skin and are looking for a special face makeup with SPF, check reviews online to see what others are saying, or e-mail the brand a question before buying. If you can’t find sunprotective apparel you like, consider purchasing a product such as Sunguard, that you can add to existing clothing to add protection from UV Rays. Don’t forget to check out plenty of local brands that you can support when looking for the right products for yourself and your loved ones.

One of the wonderful things about summer is the spontaneous weekend trips or the quick pit stop at the park after work with the family. It’s like the sunshine encourages us to take advantage of the season! To avoid unplanned sunburns and long sun exposure, always have a few key sun protectors in your purse or car for these types of adventures. You can add a small beach bag in the trunk with a few things like hats, sunglasses and sunscreen, and a towel or two, just in case you need it. Include a few reusable water bottles, too, that you can fill up, so you don’t get dehydrated, as well. It’s always better to be prepared!

Baby Blues

The

American Pregnancy Association reported that 70 to 80 percent of new moms experience negative feelings or mood swings after the birth of the new baby. It can be hard, because you may hear friends talk about how happy they are about their new addition, or watch joyous moments on television or in the movies. What may not be as openly discussed is called “baby blues,” which is experienced by more women than you may think.

It is not unusual if you find yourself crying, anxious or depressed off and on during the first few days after the birth of the baby. These feelings can last a week or so, but will improve on their own.

You may have trouble eating or sleeping, or even question your ability to care for someone new.

While baby blues can happen to anybody, some women are at higher risk than others. There are some things that can increase your risk, such as: • History of depression • Bipolar disorder • Postpartum depression after a prior pregnancy • Stressful events during the past year • Marital problems • Financial problems By getting the baby blues under control, you will have a better chance at developing a great relationship with your little new addition. If this condition goes untreated, your baby is susceptible to having behavioral or emotional problems down the road. The American Pregnancy Association said that self-care is the best way to cure the baby blues. There are many great strategies that can help you start to feel more like the old you.

• Talk about how you feel with someone you trust • Have a well-balanced diet

• Journal your emotions • Get outside and enjoy the sights and sounds • Recruit the help of friends or loved ones to get into a new routine, whether you want them to bring meals or watch another child • Give yourself time to heal and adjust to your new normal Remember that the baby did not appear overnight and the baby blues will not go away instantaneously, either. If symptoms last more than two weeks, they could be a sign of a more severe condition like postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression can be treated with antidepressants, talk therapy, or a combination of the two. There are support groups available where you can network with others who share your thoughts and feelings. It is normal to wonder how you got to that point, and the short answer is—all of the changes in your body. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has listed many factors that can contribute, such as: • Changes in hormone levels, such as the decrease of estrogen and progesterone • History of depression before, during or after pregnancy • Emotional adjustment to the new baby • Fatigue until strength is regained • Lifestyle factors, such as lack of support from others or stressful life events Remember that you did not cause this spiral of emotions to occur, so there is no reason to feel guilty or ashamed. It is important to maintain an open and honest dialogue with your obstetrician/ gynecologist, so he or she can assess how you are really doing and get you on the road to wellness as a family.

Travel Essentials for Summer Vacation

planning a summer getaway, whether for rest and relaxation at a beach or the action and hustle of a big city, being prepared is the key to success.

The last thing you want to do is be away from home and realize that you forgot something important. Make a list about two weeks in advance and check it twice.

This will alleviate stress and let you focus on the exciting aspects of travel as your vacation approaches.

• A credit card; • Your AAA membership card; • Important phone numbers and emergency contacts; • Prescription medications.

A day at the mall may be the first thing that comes to mind, as everyone wants to be fashion-forward. Bright colors are sure to make a statement, complete with possibly having a fresh new swimsuit. Do not forget to pamper your feet with new flip-flops or gym shoes, as comfort is essential when traveling. Be sure to check the weather forecast, so you know what to expect at your destination. Remember that it may be cooler in the evenings.

Layering is smart, as even air conditioning can get chilly.

Preparation is especially important, because you may not be able to find a store open at midnight when you need one. Safety should never be overlooked.

A basic travel first aid kit should include: • Band-Aids and gauze; • Medications for head, stomach and fever control; • A thermometer; • First-aid ointment; • An icepack; • An Epi-pen for any unexpected allergic reactions.

First things first; have lots of identification and your bags tagged. This will make things easier. Some personal items you want to be sure to include: • Your driver’s license; • Your passport;

An extra precaution is to put a lock on your luggage. You can fill a tote bag with some cash, nonperishable food items, lip balm, comfy socks and technology like your phone charger or iPad.

The skin is the largest organ in the body and you want to protect it. Several accessories that promote healthy skin include: • Sunglasses;

• A hat; • Sunscreen that’s broad-spectrum, waterresistant and has a sun protection factor of 30 or higher.

For air travel, keep weight and size restrictions in mind. Sometimes personal hygiene items like toothpaste, toothbrush, and deodorant can be overlooked. Take a close look at your bathroom counter, so you do not leave anything behind. Since travel is all about making unforgettable memories, you may want to consider bringing along a scrapbook, journal or photo album so you can document the good times as you go along. Do not forget to leave some space, so you have room for souvenirs. If you are traveling by car, a blanket and pillow, as well as a trendy umbrella, can make all the difference. You can stop in the Dollar Store to pick up some fun supplies for an activity bag for the kids. The trip always goes smoother when the little ones are not asking if you are there yet. AAA can be a great resource if you need tour books or printed roadmaps. Have a flashlight, jumper cables, and spare tire in your trunk, available for an emergency situation. Last but not least, grab the book you have been waiting to have time to read or a favorite magazine, so you can stay busy and get the show on the road.

Managing the Mental Load

The

“mental load” is a relatively new name for an age-old concept: “the emotional labor of being responsible for the management of your family.”

Family management is most easily described as “being in charge of all of the remembering.” Remembering to schedule everybody’s doctor’s appointments; remembering to keep up with the laundry; remembering to do the meal plan and grocery shopping; remembering when to sign up your six-year-old for baseball; essentially remembering to do all of the things that keep your family moving along smoothly. This mental load has been on women for as long as families as we know them have been a part of society, but many other things that factor into our lives have changed drastically. More and more women are working in demanding careers outside of the home, on top of being more involved in their communities: in outreach programs, social justice work, and politics, to name a few examples. With all of these added complexities in women’s daily lives, it would make sense for the household responsibility to have shifted toward a more even split between partners. However, this is often not the case.

So why do women still carry the majority of the mental load in family management?

This is how many of us were raised, and it feels normal for the moms to be in charge of the house. As a society, we reinforce this stereotype by portraying dads as lovable

but goofy around the home, who simply aren’t capable of being able to keep up with the demands of a household. Not only is this setting up mothers (especially mothers who work outside of the home, and have household responsibilities to come home to after a full 40-hour work week) for failure, but it is insulting to most fathers who are absolutely capable of managing households.

The mental load is something that is absolutely crucial to be talked about, especially within our families. Because the societal norm that many people grew up with was that of the mother being in charge of the household, many don’t realize exactly what the problem is. If you don’t know what the problem is, you can’t begin to know how to fix it. This requires open and honest communication, which is crucial in a marriage. When you feel overwhelmed, you have to tell your spouse, in a loving but honest way, exactly why you’re feeling this way and what they can do to help. This does not mean delegating chores to your spouse, as that will only breed resentment.

It’s important, rather, to have honest discussions about what household tasks are expected to be done and then work through splitting them somewhat evenly between both partners.

If you’re not quite ready for splitting everything down the middle, start small.

Ask for help when you need it, and then

let them help. A problem many mothers and women have is asking for help, and then getting frustrated when that help isn’t exactly what we would have done ourselves. This is familial micromanagement and can be damaging to relationships.

Consider if it is really that important for your shirts to be folded in the exact matter that you prefer they be folded, or if it’s most important for them to not be in a giant pile on your corner chair. And yes, we know about the chair. We all have that chair.

The most important thing to remember when splitting these tasks up is not to focus only on the chores. Yes, they’re important, and should be split relatively evenly (noting that this equality will ebb and flow depending on what else is going on at the time in your lives), but more importantly, what often doesn’t get discussed is splitting up the family management tasks.

Maybe have one partner in charge of managing the sports (signing up junior for baseball and handling snacks, etc.) and have the other partner in charge of medical appointments. If one partner is in charge of meal planning, have the other responsible for maintaining the household shopping, such as toilet paper and bathing necessities. This balance will look different for each family, but it is worth the time you put into figuring it out for the amount of stress that you will remove from your life with this choice.

You

know the feeling. That feeling that in that moment, you’re stuck. There’s nowhere to go. You feel boxed in, and you can’t step forward, backward, left, or right.

It feels like time is frozen, and you wonder how in the world you got in this place.

Friends, it’s only a moment.

In those times when it feels that we’re paralyzed by circumstances, the marvelous march of time has this uncanny ability to shake us loose. If we allow it.

The thing about a moment, though, is that we have to see it for what it really is.

Think about your first broken heart.

At the time, emotions were riding high, and you were certain life as you knew it was over.

Or consider that first apartment, when your crazy-loud neighbors were making you crazy, and you longed for a home to call your own. But you weren’t sure you would ever qualify for a home loan.

What about that time you were trying to figure out your next career move and your uncertainty was so great, you weren’t sure which direction to turn?

Or that horrible, no good, awful, terrible day that never seemed to end.

Here’s the truth—you have a 100% survival rate for all of that and more.

That’s not to say that certain moments won’t change us. The loss of a loved one; the acceptance to a certain college; a promotion or demotion; the no when you were expecting yes—all of those moments have the potential to derail us or redirect us.

But it’s up to us whether we let those moments define us.

If it’s a good thing, worthy of adding

to your personal definition of who you are—by all means, embrace it.

But if it’s not, consider the following: • Don’t dwell on the negative. The more you think about negative experiences, the more magnified they become. It’s harder to let go when you continue to dwell.

• Look for some glimmer of hope or goodness. Just as there is always something to be thankful for, every situation has some kind of takeaway. Recognize the lesson to be learned, the one positive from the experience, and move on.

• Find a distraction to get you through this moment and into the next. Exercise, call a friend, work on a puzzle, re-paint the living room—whatever it takes to get your mind going in a different direction.

• Play uplifting music. Trying to get past a negative moment is not the time to play depressing or angry music. Let your mind be filled with music that inspires, uplifts, or just refuses to let you sit still.

• Pray your way through it. Let your mind give it to God and wait for His timing.

• If your circumstances are based on your choices, forgive yourself.

It’s a critical step in healing and moving on.

• Do something nice for someone who cannot repay you. They will be thankful, and you will feel better. Whether you volunteer for the afternoon or buy the lunch of someone in line behind you… just do a random act of kindness.

Finally—if you’re truly stuck and can’t get out, seek professional help.

There’s no shame in needing help if you’re stuck in a moment and need a little guidance to navigate your way through it.

But keep telling yourself—it’s a moment. A new one is just around the corner.

Laughing counteracts the effects of stress by stopping the release of the stress hormone, cortisol, and triggering the release of dopamine, which has a calming, anxiety-relieving effect. There are psychological benefits, too.

Introducing some humor into a difficult situation helps a person feel more in control, which makes the situation seem easier to manage. The ability to find something funny in a tough situation also helps dispel feelings of anger and fear, which have a negative impact on health over time.

Humor is especially helpful to both those with long-term illnesses and their caregivers. Maggie, a full-time caregiver for her husband, who has dementia, said, “If you don’t have a sense of humor, you’re just not going to make it!” Your situation, like Maggie’s, may not be particularly funny. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to laugh about. For the sake of your mental and physical health, at least once each day, look away from your responsibilities and problems and find something that makes you laugh. Stay in touch with

your most upbeat friends. Look for funny books, movies, and Internet videos. Even when those things can’t be found, laugh anyway—because your body can’t tell the difference between genuine and “fake” laughter. The benefits of laughter accrue regardless of why you are laughing. So, today and every day, go ahead and laugh—because it’s really good for you!

How often has an adult asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The answer may connect to an exciting field of heroics and aiding communities, such as that of a police officer, firefighter, soldier, or pilot. With true love, real beauty never fades, but one thing can change…

is the month where traditional wedding plans come to fruition. Parents marry off their daughters and sons in what must truly be a bittersweet moment for them. As I reflect on this month of bridal bliss, it makes me think of some advice we as parents can give our children in special times like these that I think would be very helpful in their long-term relationship. Advice I will now share with you.

There’s a very interesting, and perhaps often unrealized, dynamic regarding romantic love. For instance, have you ever seen a couple together and wondered why she is with him or vice versa? Aside from the fact that looks aren’t everything and personality and other factors play an important role, there may be another reason. When two people are attracted to each other, as is often the case when they’re young, as they grow old together they remember each other as they were. You see beyond the surface to that smile or look that first attracted you. Even though the looks may have diminished over time, still, in your heart they’re almost as vivid as they were in the beginning.

That’s because, with true love, real beauty never fades.

What can change though, or rather than actually change, become more apparent, is the way your love for each other is expressed and/or defined.

This brings me to a lesson I became aware of recently. It’s a lesson that took me thirty years to learn. Not because I’m not intelligent—had I heard about Gary Chapman’s book, first published in 1992, for example, perhaps I could have learned it more than twenty years earlier. However, it’s something that once you hear it makes complete sense, yet not something you’d normally think of as an issue in your relationship. A case most likely, of being too close to the trees to see the forest.

The Five Love Languages Series by bestselling author Gary Chapman, an internationally recognized expert on marriage, family, and relationships, host of a syndicated radio program and Senior Associate pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, identifies that as a couple we each have our own individual definitions of how we primarily define love. The critical factor here is when our description is not defined in the same way by our spouse. When the definitions are not the same, and that difference is not realized by both parties, that’s when troubles begin to brew. Troubles, that if not understood

properly, could lead to some difficult challenges ahead in the relationship.

I can’t begin to explain all the incredibly noteworthy details as properly defined in Chapman’s books, but I can highlight some key points for you. The five love languages he talks about define how couples express their love to one another and how they each would in turn like to have love expressed back to them. Those five languages are words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Of course, we all like some of these things some of the time. Yet, if we’re honest with ourselves and look inside, we must admit that one of these attributes stands out among the rest as what we prefer most often as an expression of love that we both give and expect to receive in return.

Living with differences in how your mate chooses to mainly express their love to you can be tricky to navigate in your relationship.

However, the mere realization that the difference exists and what that difference is, exactly, goes a long way in helping you both make compromises that allow the marriage to grow and flourish. Not understanding the difference leads to a multitude of challenges, anywhere from thinking your mate doesn’t care as much for you anymore, or doesn’t understand you and your needs in the marriage.

In other words, not realizing this simple concept can lead to an exaggeration of the problems and exploitation of the relationship by one of the partners.

Understanding this concept, although it doesn’t guarantee that you will both agree or even always work together 100 percent of the time in compromise, does give couples insight into how relationships form and flourish. This knowledge, in turn, provides an opportunity to understand aspects of the marriage not otherwise known or realized. This understanding allows you to grow together, mature in your approach to one another, make compromises and accommodations and develop a bond perhaps stronger than was formed originally.

If, as parents, we can pass this knowledge on to our children, it will certainly be a gift that lasts them a lifetime. A gift doesn’t get much better than that.

MEMORIES – Past, Present, and Future Ahh,

summer vacation! I loved it as a child, and I love it as an adult, but not for the same reason. Growing up, our summer break from school never came before June 15th. Once the school year was finally over, it meant lazy days doing anything to keep cool, but more importantly, it meant a trip to visit my grandparents in Texas.

As we only saw my grandparents once a year, it was always a very special time being with them. To this day, I can still recall the smells of the bushes and flowers that surrounded their front porch.

They were always sitting there in rocking chairs waiting for our arrival. Our days were spent going fishing with our granddad, shopping downtown with our grandmother (always making sure we took home a special gift), riding horses, and anything else to make our time together fun. It always went by much too fast.

The fishing trips were my favorite. My grandparents owned some property outside of town that had a pond my granddad kept stocked with fish. He would take a cooler filled with sodas, sandwiches, and potato chips for my cousins, sister, and me. We piled into the back of his truck that he used only for our fishing trips, with bamboo poles and bait buckets, and we’d come back hours later with more fish, and mosquito bites, than we could count. My granddad, who was a much-respected and -loved man, took our excess catch and gave them to people he knew could use them. So many memories collected in such a short visit.

Leaving there, we drove across Texas to see my paternal grandparents. It was equally as memorable, but a totally different experience. My grandparents owned a restaurant, and I loved going to it as often as possible while we were there. My grandmother had a garden room added to their home, and she grew numerous flowers and plants. They had a beautiful yard filled with different fruit trees, flowers, and a lily pond. We

had picnics out by the lily pond that included a peach we’d pick right off the tree. My grandmother loved to bake, and their home was filled with the sweet aromas of freshly baked cookies and pies. We played games around the table in the garden room, had tea parties, and drank lemonade. Even after all these years, I can recall time spent there and how, like my other grandparents, they made it so special.

My memories, combined with watching my daughters with their grandparents, are something that is important for me to share with my precious grandchildren. I am so lucky to have them close by. I am getting to watch them grow up and be there to share, not only special occasions, but be there as part of their daily lives.

Summer vacation now means a freer schedule. It will be easier to do things more spur-of-the-moment, such as going to the beach, the playground, to a movie, taking trips, or whatever comes to mind. As they grow up, so will the activities and ways we spend time together.

My hope is that many, many years from now, when they reminisce, they will remember special times with their Gigi. How she was always there for them, loved them unconditionally, and was always up for anything, as long as she had the ability. I want their memories of their grandparents to be as wonderful as the ones of mine.

Recognizing Poisonous Plants

Nature is sneaky! Even with slow-moving, tip-toeing efforts to walk carefully through trails, wooded locations, and within the perimeter of your yard, the leaves of poisonous plants can be hard to recognize. Beyond knowing that poison ivy grows on vines and poison sumac is a shrub, the ability to recognize poisonous and toxic plants will keep everyone safe this summer!

ALLIUM: How can such a beautiful flower be on a poisonous plant list?

Awareness is essential! Think about Dr. Seuss’s book the Lorax. Allium has a tall leafless stem with many purple flowers creating the shape of a perfect sphere. The bulb, flowers, and stem are poisonous.

DAFFODIL: Perhaps not in humans, but the bulb and the flower can trigger vomiting in animals. The daffodil contains lycorine, which will result in symptoms of abnormal breathing, diarrhea, increased heart rate, and vomiting. Other flowers poisonous to animals are amaryllis, azaleas, crocus, larkspur, tulips, and wisteria.

ELDERBERRY: Often found in the wild, the elderberry bush, recognized for its fruit’s medicinal properties, which can reduce the symptoms of flu, is also poisonous. Although the canes are red, the clusters of small blue-black bunches require cooking to be safe for digestion.

POISON IVY: We all know one rhyme quite well. “Leaves in three, let it be!”

Check the leaves first. One characteristic is a glossy green shine; then, look closely at the leaf structure. Each of the three leaflets will not form one leaf, but the individual leaves are set within a cluster. Eastern poison ivy is a vine, which possesses a fuzzy, rope-like appearance. Western poison ivy has a long stem and can grow in a clump similar to a shrub. In the fall, leaves turn various shades of red, orange, and yellow.

KILLING THE PLANT: Safely cut the vine close to the ground; then, brush a glyphosate-based herbicide over the stem. The active ingredient will stream directly into the roots.

POISON OAK: Similar to poison ivy, the bright green and shiny leaves of poison oak are in threes. Recognizable as oak leaves with toothed leaflets, it can appear as a shrub or woody vine. Be wise and avoid the white (with a black dot at the top) arrangement in slender clusters. In the fall, colors change to yellow, bright red, or pink.

Four Levels of toxicity: • MAJOR TOXICITY: severe illness or death • MINOR TOXICITY: ingesting may cause diarrhea and vomiting • OXALATES: saps or juices may result in skin irritations, breathing difficulties and throat swelling, and stomach pain.

• DERMATITIS: skin rashes or irritations

POISON SUMAC: Mostly found in wet soil or close to sources of water, such as a pond or marsh. The woody plant grows six feet tall while the leaves are oval and form a tip or point. Along the red stem are seven to 13 individual leaves. Small yellow-green flowers develop slender, drooping clusters of paleyellow or cream-colored berries.

REMOVING THE OILS: A reaction can appear within three hours or after 24 hours. Wash skin with cold water and soap, such as Fels Naptha. Additionally, rub equal parts of water and rubbing alcohol onto the skin. Immediately launder clothes to prevent potential susceptibility, which also includes gloves, shoelaces, and a sleeping bag if camping.

SINGING NETTLES: Be wary of any plant that has hairs on the underside of the leaves and stems, such as the stinging nettle. Two identifying characteristics are the heart-shaped, toothed leaves, and the flowers of either a bright yellow or pink.

Other Poisonous Plants Who would expect many of our favorite plants to have poisonous roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or berries? Knowledge and continuous research will help aid our understanding and teach others about the potentially lifethreatening symptoms. Continue to point out examples of poisonous or toxic plants to family, friends, and especially, young children. Repeat often the recognizable characteristics such as the appearance of shiny leaves and red stems. The rule not to touch or consume unrecognizable berries could also save more than one life!

FAMILY FOOD FUN (For Kids and Kids-at-Heart)

breakfast to snacks to dessert you’re covered, and can enjoy family food fun throughout the day. Use your artistic abilities in food preparation, think outside the box and enjoy some creative fun food treats. These edible creations are ideal to share with family and friends.

ANIMAL TOAST

Bring out your inner artist and put your creativity to the test.

Make it into a contest with first, second, and third prize winners!

How many different animals can you make? With plain toast as the base, spread peanut butter, Nutella (hazelnut spread) or cream cheese overtop in a thin layer, then get creative with fruit slices and herbs. Have banana, strawberry, grape, and blueberry slices at the ready to add eyes, ears, tails, and smiles, and watch as toast transforms into fish, monkeys, bears, owls, and anything else you and your kids can dream up.

PANCAKE FACES Start your day with a breakfast bash of fun faces! Gather fruit, including bananas, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, and orange slices. Peel the bananas and oranges, then slice bananas into rounds for eyes and noses and cut the orange wedges into mouth shapes. Slice grapes and strawberries into rounds. Banana or strawberry slices become the eyes, and then blueberries placed in the center represent pupils for the eyes.

Make the pancakes, then see who can create the happiest face, goofiest grin, saddest look, or most neutral expression. You can even name your pancake faces.

Drizzle on the syrup and dive in for a delicious meal!

FRUIT FLOWERS It’s fun and super easy to bring edible spring blooms to your kitchen table! Set out the plates and have the kids and kids-at-heart arrange a yummy bouquet. Gather a collection of fruits such as bananas, strawberries, blueberries and grapes, and cut into round slices. Put a round pistil, or center of the flower, on the plate, then arrange fruit “petals” all around it in a

circle. Add multiple layers, if you like, and then add some edible leaves. If available, peppermint, spearmint and lemon balm make excellent leaves. Heads up—it won’t be long before those plates are empty again!

ANTS ON A LOG Wash celery and cut into sticks about three inches long. Spread peanut butter or cream cheese inside each “log” and add raisin “ants.” Decide how many ants you want on each log and turn healthy snacks into a fun counting game.

SPAGHETTI NESTS Boil some spaghetti, angel hair, or fettuccine pasta. Strain and transfer to a baking dish. Add butter and minced garlic or pesto, and mix. Swirl with tongs into a nest-like circular shape and then bake for a few minutes till firm. Place a few small mozzarella balls in the center to represent bird eggs, and let the kids decide how many bird babies you want to hatch!

SWEET TREAT “SUSHI” INGREDIENTS: 12 fruit roll-ups, any flavor; 6 tablespoons butter; 6 cups mini marshmallows; 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal and assorted candies (gummies work best, since they cut easily).

Melt butter in a saucepan, then add marshmallows. Place Rice Krispies into a bowl and then stir the melted marshmallow mixture in with the cereal.

Now it’s time to make your “sushi.” Place a fruit roll-up down flat onto a cutting board and spread a thin layer of the Rice Krispies mix overtop. Next, add a few pieces of your favorite gummy candies.

Now, comes the tricky part. Roll the fruit roll-up as if you’re making sushi. To help it all stick together, dip your fingers into some water and dampen the inside of the roll-up. You’ll need a sharp cutting knife to carefully cut the roll into rounds.

Help the kids cut the rolls, then wash and put the knife away. The less-pretty end pieces can be eaten right away!

Food should be fun, as well as delicious and nutritious, and these fun ideas have it all. Enjoy the creative process of making edible art, and make the most of being a kid, or just being a kid-at heart.

“Each of you … must use the gift that God has given you to serve others.” ~ 1 Peter 4:10 Everyone (yes, even you) starts out as a tiny baby. Name some things that a baby can do by itself. It’s not a very long list, is it? But, little by little, a baby begins to do more and more things. Name some things that you can do now that you couldn’t do last year. There are times when you might get pretty excited and say, “Hey! I did it all by myself!”

Each one of us is different (unique, one-of-a-kind). Our whole life is spent learning and growing. You might hope to be a good cook like your mom or a smart businessman like your dad. Maybe you hope to travel the world or make an exciting new video game. God has made you to be YOU. The more you learn about God, the more you see what’s really important in life. You want to make God happy and show him that you love him.

God’s kind of love isn’t an ooey-gooey feeling like you might see in a movie, but it’s choosing to learn more about him, doing what he says, and not doing what he says you shouldn’t do.

God wants you to serve or help OTHERS. Sometimes that’s hard to do. Do you whine a little bit when Mom asks you to set the table?

Do you pout if you have to visit your aunt and uncle while your friends are going to see a movie?

Devotion: Baby Pools

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” ~ Joshua 1:9 (NIV) I was driving by a lovely home on the beach when something in the back yard caught my attention…a bright yellow, plastic baby pool. Surely, the pool was there to entertain the little ones while their parents enjoyed the view from the deck. But, my imagination ran away with me, and I envisioned a full-grown adult sitting in that teeny baby pool with the big, beautiful ocean just steps away. How silly!

When it comes to our faith, how many of us are still sitting in a baby pool instead of jumping with abandon into the ocean? Sure, it’s safe in those 6 inches of water.

We most likely won’t drown or get bitten by a shark in our plastic pools. But, God didn’t create us for this kind of safe, shallow living. We’ll never learn to trust him in such sheltered surroundings. We must be willing to get past our fears, escape our longings for comfort and dive head first into the depth of his His love. When the waves get taller and the wind starts to blow, we’ll learn to rely on him to keep us steady in the storm. That’s the place where our faith begins to grow and blossom.

I’m reminded of one of my favorite scenes from C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Mr. Beaver is trying to describe what Aslan is like and Susan asks, “Is he—quite safe?” “Who said anything about safe”? Mr. Beaver replies. “Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good.”

If you’re still sitting in the shallow end, I pray you’re ready to take your faith to a deeper level where you’ll learn to trust God. As you begin to take your first, timid steps out of the safety of the baby pool and towards the ocean of God’s grace, just remember to trust in His goodness.

Sabbatical

I

magine being in church one Sunday when your pastor announces that he is preparing to take two months off from his job. Not only will he be away for two months, but he will continue to be paid his normal salary while he is away. He calls it a “sabbatical.” It sounds a lot to you like a really long paid vacation. Would you be supportive of this idea? How about the other people you know in your congregation?

Believe it or not, it’s normal and, in some churches, required for pastors to take a sabbatical every so often. It’s like an extended Sabbath that gives the pastor a chance to get refocused, refreshed and renewed. When it’s done right, he will return to his regular responsibilities as a better leader, teacher and servant.

Christianing “A

dulting” is a term that was coined about ten years ago. It means to do the things that adults do, like pay bills, go to work, and be responsible.

I’ve been familiar with the term for a while, but recently, one of our ministers used it in a sermon and it triggered a thought for a new word that I wrote in my sermon notebook—“Christianing.”

From my quick Google research, the only thing I can tell is that it’s mostly been used when someone misspells “Christening.” So if it’s coined already, my apologies.... But let’s pretend it’s a brand new word.

Say it out loud: Christianing. We need to give it a definition, which should be easy. If “adulting” means to do the things that adults do, shouldn’t “Christianing” be doing the things that Christians do?

And what do Christians do?

It goes back to the root word— “Christian,” and then, the root word of that—“Christ.”

The term “Christian” is only in the Bible three times. The first instance is in Acts 11:26 and it says, “…So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

Since Barnabas and Saul (Paul) were there to teach the Gospel—the good news of Jesus Christ, the term Christian came to mean a follower of Christ.

The term “Christian” is also found in Acts 26:28 and 1 Peter 4:16.

So as we go about being Christians, “Christianing,” if you will, what does it look like?

It means we do things as Christ would do them. He is our model of the Christian life. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” Similar admonitions are given in 1 John 2:6, 1 Peter 2:21, Ephesians 5:1-2, and Jesus Himself said, “You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:13-15).

Imitating the love of Jesus is hard, but not impossible, thanks to the Holy Spirit living in us. He equips us with His power, so we don’t have to rely on ourselves. And even when we fail to measure up to His perfection, we are perfectly forgiven.

But with all that said, I think the definition of our new word, “Christianing,” can be best defined by 1 John 2:6, “The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.”

Let’s make it a practice to apply “Christianing” to every aspect of our lives, and show the world what it means to live for Jesus Christ, our Savior and King!

the past 4 years, this space has been occupied by “Keep on the Sunny Side,” and was written by Jennifer Hampton, Pastor of Sunrise UMC. We found out in March that our beloved Jennifer was being moved to Camp Tekoa. While we were all surprised and saddened by the news, we were reminded that, after all, it is the Methodist way. Typical pastor moves happen in June, with the new pastor coming in July. However, with her move being made to a camp, she was needed at her new appointment sooner, so we find ourselves “pastorless” earlier than usual. Lucky for us, we have back-up! Many thanks to Pastor Darren, Pastor Jayne and Tim who will lead our worship until Jennifer’s replacement comes.

What Digs and Burrows beneath You?

life underground in the darkness and encased, perhaps, by tunnels, is not typically given a thought by those of us dwelling above. Until a sign appears of the inhabitant on the surface, such as a perfectly round hole. Curiosity drives an individual to wonder, what may be living below? Rather than sticking a hand inside the depths, observe from a distance, first. The size of the hole is one indication of what lives within it.

Burrowing underground not only provides safety but a shelter against hot or frozen temperatures.

Here is a short list of animals burrowing near you: ANTS: The hole of an ant is easy to recognize. Tall cone-shaped mounds serve as the entrance. In addition to the super ability to lift 20-times its body weight, it leaves a pheromone trail when foraging to show where it has been and how to return home.

Attracted to moisture, ants also build nests in building materials, stacks of wood, or burrow through cracks in tree branches.

BEES AND WASPS: At least two species of bees and 14,000 species of wasps burrow into the ground. The queen selects the location, typically an already formed hole, and the workers construct the nest. Although some bees and wasps are dangerous stinging pests to humans, they prey mostly on garden insects while assisting the pollination process.

EARTHWORMS: Without jaws, teeth, and eyes, the elongated earthworm crawls forward and backward, swallowing soil, sand, and small stones, and gaining its nutrients through these contents. As it squirms through the soil, the earthworm creates burrows in safe regions, such as under large stones. Finding an earthworm indicates the soil is both healthy and full of nutrients.

FOXES: Not all foxes dig their burrows; frequently, they will take over an established den, which may be near the base of trees or walls. One indication of a fox hole is that the entrance may have evidence of its prey, such as numerous bones or bird feathers.

Be wary, because the narrowed four-inch hole can result in injury to a horse or people from a trip or a fall. Additionally, foxes lead to an infestation of various parasites.

GROUNDHOGS: A 10- to 12-inch-diameter hole located near trees, walls, or fences would satisfy a groundhog. Unless raising their young, most groundhogs live alone and try to outsmart their prey. Watching an entrance may not be helpful; groundhogs will have up to four additional access points, which tunnel four feet underground to a sizeable den. Tubing and wires may be damaged if they interfere with the groundhog’s ambition to create a tunnel.

RATS: A smooth entrance, roughly four inches in diameter, is for a small animal, who comes and goes often. While the hole is the same size as that of voles, moles, and deer mice, the rat burrows 18-inches under foundations; yet, the nest can expand to three feet in length. They especially enjoy creating a den under rocks, concrete slabs, or other heavy objects—not just for safety purposes, but to be closer to a significant food source, such as a dumpster or trash cans. Cleverly, rats have escape holes in thick ground vegetation like English ivy or under dense hedges.

RABBITS: Surrounded by a mound of dirt, the rabbit hole can extend 10 feet below ground, and be comprised of elaborate tunnels leading to chambers that may span 150 feet.

The warren is a habitat for rabbits in woods or forests, meadows and grasslands, wetlands or deserts. Rabbits leave their burrows at night to seek food and return by morning. A wide range of vision aids rabbits to escape capture from a lengthy list of predators.

SKUNKS: A shallow hole could be from a skunk’s nose, since it digs to extract grubs and worms. (Additional favorite foods are berries, grasshoppers, wasps, beetles, small rodents, and mice.) Despite possessing strong forefeet and long claws, they cannot climb a fence. A skunk will not travel further than two miles distant from a water source or its burrow.

While it may feel intrusive to find a creature which has disrupted large areas of grass, or a beloved garden, burrowing animals and insects have a purpose in our environment. In learning more about the underground dwellers, we can determine if it’s worthwhile to eradicate the animal or allow it to follow its instincts.

Wake Forest’s Jennifer Kupcho Makes Her Indelible Mark in Golf History at Augusta

2019 Masters’ will be remembered for a number of remarkable events. Initially, Tiger Woods’ first Masters’ win since 2005, along with his first major win in 11 years, since the US Open in 2008 at Torrey Pines. As exciting as was Tiger dramatically coming from two strokes behind on Sunday to become the second-oldest golfer at age 43 to win at Augusta, this feat is not the only thing that will be remembered uniquely about this year’s Masters.’

For another golfer, Jennifer Kupcho, originally from Westminster, Colorado, who at the time was a senior at Wake Forest University, majoring in Communications and a member of the women’s golf team, this year’s Masters’ is not just a historic moment in her life, but also in the sport of golf itself.

Jennifer became the first winner of the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur golf tournament held April 3rd-6th, 2019, the week before the Masters’ Tournament. The event is the first of its kind at the famed Augusta National Golf Club in its long, storied history and features 72 of the top amateurs from around the world. The tournament is a 54-hole, strokeplay event, including Jennifer and runner-up Maria Fassi from Mexico, who was also a senior, at the University of Arkansas.

Both Jennifer and Maria deferred their LPGA Tour qualification until after graduation in May, in order to continue to compete on this level. This decision allowed them both to write their names in the history books once more.

Never mind that Jennifer accomplished this win in spite of suffering from a migraine headache that hampered her vision on three holes during her final round; a round in which she shot a 5-under, 67 and finished 10-under for the tournament.

She managed the stress of the first amateur tournament for women at the storied Augusta National Golf Club, an exclusive golf club that didn’t include a female member until 2012.

Jennifer’s accomplishment, a three-shot victory over a fellow competitor and good friend, Maria Fassi, provided an exciting

finish to what will become a new tradition at Augusta, intended to draw even more attention to the future of women’s golf.

To her coach and loyal teammates and friends on the Wake Forest golf team, Jennifer’s accomplishment doesn’t come as a surprise. After all, she was the reigning 2018 NCAA Women’s Singles National Champion, National Player of the Year, and is a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, presented later this month, as well as the top-ranked amateur in the world. And yet, this was a historical tournament at an even more historical golf course that has rattled even the best of professional golfers throughout its history. To win, she needed to play at her best, and notwithstanding the momentary migraine distraction that could have ended her chances, she achieved that goal and came out on top. This is a destination she’s sure to reach more and more upon joining the pro tour after graduation.

In spite of her previous accomplishments, she sees this as a pivotal moment in her golfing career. One of the things she is proud to be remembered for. When asked how she feels this new prestigious tournament will impact women’s golf and young girls coming up in the sport, she answered, “Any time women’s golf can be in the national spotlight like it was during the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, it can only help the sport’s popularity. Hopefully, there were young players who watched the tournament, either in person or on TV, who now have something else to strive for when they get older.”

Regarding the honor of her name being the first on the champion’s list of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, a list that will ultimately become long, she feels privileged to be part of what will absolutely become a Who’s Who of women’s golf in the future. Her win at Augusta has brought well-earned attention and with her increased recognition, she described how she plans to promote the sport of women’s golf. “Hopefully, what I was able to do, along with Maria Fassi, is show that you can stay in college and complete your degree and then have success as a pro after school. Collegiate golf

really helped me prepare for a career on the LPGA Tour, and I want young golfers to know how beneficial playing in college can be in terms of preparing you for life after school, both on and off the course.”

She’s learned a lot throughout her career thus far. Her solid advice to all those young ladies coming up pursuing the sport they love: “You need to spend a lot of time practicing and improving. Golf isn’t a game where you can be successful without putting in the hard work. If you take the time and are committed to the work and listening to your coaches, the rewards are worth it. It could be winning a tournament, playing a great round or even hitting that first perfect drive, golf will pay you back for your devotion to it.”

It all hasn’t been without its challenges; however, as she explained her biggest challenge in the sport. “I have had migraines at times during my career. I hadn’t had one since my freshman year before I experienced the one during the final round in Augusta.

It blurred my vision for a few holes and I had to depend on my caddie to help me line up shots and putts until I started to be able to see again. To have something like that happen, when you have no control over it, on that stage, was a big challenge, but I knew it would get better. I just had to get through it.” Let this be an inspiration to others who will undoubtedly have their own challenges to face head-on and overcome.

When it comes to having a women’s professional version of the Masters’ at Augusta in the future, she feels there are some slight modifications that would be necessary. “It was incredible to play Augusta National for a tournament, with the beauty of the course and the huge crowds. It will be tough for the course to host an LPGA event. There are only two sets of tees at Augusta, the

Masters’ tees and the members’ tees. We played the members’ tees, which were around 6,300 yards, and they wouldn’t be long enough for an LPGA event. TRAPPING INSECTS, Do-It-Yourself Style!

With

the arrival of sweet smells filtering through the air from trees, bushes, flowers, and plants, winged insects answer the call. Entomologists claim newer pesticides are less dangerous to people and to the very insects they target, namely yellow jackets and wasps.

The result is the frequent appearance of dangerous insects, extending to pests such as ticks, deerflies, and mosquitoes.

The resurgence of destructive insects has many individuals luring yellow jackets, wasps, and carpenter bees into self-made traps! And, the best part, the materials and bait are not expensive!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR A HOMEMADE TRAP: Use a container that holds water, which can be a bucket or a plastic container. With a board, use either nails or screws to attach a fresh piece of meat, such as chicken; then, flip the board over. Fill the container with water an inch above the meat. Add a few squirts of dish soap. No need to cover further. The yellow jackets not able to reach the meat will collect in the water and die. You can catch hundreds within a few hours.

Wasps Wasps have environmental benefits. In addition to fertilizing the garden, they control the parasite population. But it is wise to maintain a safe distance from them. Even a nest constructed high above the ground may be difficult to see.

Consider placing your trap where you think wasps gather.

Yellow Jackets It’s important to understand the nesting habits of dangerous insects. Too often, people will happen upon a nest and become instantly involved in a swarm.

Yellow jackets, a type of hornet, prefer dead tree trunks or using mouse tunnels to nest underground. They also tunnel behind window trim or under siding, in gaps in your eaves or under decks. In a short period, a colony can reach tens of thousands and cause structural damage to your house.

Never tackle a nest on your own. Yellow jackets can sting multiple times without dying; however, you can lure them to an inescapable trap set well away from the house and foot traffic. Most insects return to their nest after foraging at dusk, which is a safe time to establish and examine your trap.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR A HOMEMADE TRAP: The best container is a two-liter plastic bottle. With a marker, draw a line around the neck of the bottle just below the taper. A rubber band works perfectly as a guide. Use a knife to cut, separating the top from the bottom. Consider the time of year when adding a source of food to your trap. In the spring and summer, wasps seek sources of protein, such as meat; however, by the end of summer through early fall, use sugar water with a spoon full of jam and a tad bit of vinegar.

To complete the trap, invert the lid with the opening pointing downward into the bottle. Tape the two pieces together.

Consider using a hole punch near the top for adding wire or string to serve as a handle for hanging.

Check the trap to empty, clean, and rebait.

Carpenter Bees Any unpainted wooden structure will attract the carpenter bee. Large holes approximately a half inch in diameter grow larger as female carpenter bees extend the tunnel year after year, weakening the wood. At the end of the tunnel, nests hold developing larvae. The only type of trap is one made from wood.

TRAP INSTRUCTIONS: First you will need a block of wood four inches by four inches.

Drill a hole four inches deep in the bottom center; then, on all four sides, mark two inches from the bottom at the center. Drill at a 45-degree angle on all four sides, which will intersect with the first hole. Drill another 7/8-inch hole in the lid of the Mason jar. Align the lid with the hole at the bottom and attach using small screws.

After screwing in the Mason jar, all that remains is a hook. The trap can be placed on a tree, on a railing or underneath a deck. Make several. It is recommended to check your trap and empty. It will fill up fast!

This Summer, Continue Learning Outside the Classroom

I heard this question countless times, from countless students, in the fourteen years that I taught English. In fact, if I’m honest, I asked this question myself more than a few times. Many, many times, actually…just ask my mom.

It’s a fair question. Even as adults, we want to know the hard things we’re doing serve some purpose. I mean, if eating spinach every day isn’t positively affecting my health, then I need to swap that stuff out for some M&M’s, am I right?

That said, schools are really limited by curriculum calendars and administrative requirements, and often there just isn’t time to show kids how their academic skills can transfer to living a fuller, better life. Fortunately, this is something you can do as a parent, and it doesn’t require sitting at your kitchen table, slaving over worksheets.

This is the first blog in two-part series that I hope will empower you to take your kids’ learning outside the classroom. These strategies require no curriculum and little planning, but they’ll pay long-term dividends as your children begin to understand the purpose of the work they do in school.

First, consider including your kids in your family budget. Have a kid who complains that they’ll never use math in real life? Let him be a part of your

financial planning. While little kids can certainly do this, think seriously about giving your middle and high schoolers the opportunity. Give them a printout of your budget and put them in charge of writing down every expense you have during the month. (This will probably blow their blessed minds.) Let them tally the numbers, compare them to the goal, and analyze ways to make the budget more efficient. This is a great time to talk about family values, money goals, and priorities; if you’re brave, you can let them be a part of choosing where discretionary income goes. The value of this activity goes well beyond math; most college freshmen arrive with absolutely no understanding of money management, and they’re easy prey for the credit card companies hawking free T-shirts. Have your kids calculate the actual cost of a small item after several years of interest, and let them “see” how costly instant gratification can be.

A child who participates in the family budget will understand true cost and hopefully be more guarded with his or her money.

Doing a home repair project? Make them a team member. If you are doing the project yourselves, let them research and calculate the cost of materials.

Bringing in a contractor? Let your kids sit in on the meetings. Ask lots of questions about the process and science of what they are going to be doing. Find out why this retaining wall will hold up while that of a different

style will not. Ask the contractor what makes the dimensional shingles so much more durable. Let your kids talk to the arborist who takes care of your trees.

Model curiosity and encourage your kids to find knowledge in everyday tasks. You might even wind up with some lowcost labor.

Finally, whenever possible, cook with your kids! I’ll be the first to admit that this is HARD. My kids are little, and there’s nothing quite as stressful as a three-year-old who insists on cracking the eggs. But…cooking is effectively math and chemistry. Want to practice fractions? Halve and double some of your favorite recipes. Talk about why the yeast makes the bread rise; if you don’t know, Google it with them. In addition to the math and science, skill and knowledge in the kitchen will save your kids money and keep them healthy down the road. And let them be part of the shopping as well; if you buy ingredients from a local farm, let them meet and talk to the farmer. At the grocery store, let them keep track of cost, create and follow a list, or check the labels for healthy ingredients. Let them see that life skills and academic knowledge go hand in hand.

Trust me, I know involving your kids in these tasks will make them take longer, and the last thing any parent wants is for anything to take longer. Gah! But the upfront investment (and the eye rolls and sighs you’ll tolerate) will make a huge difference down the road.

The fields are ripe with those yummy red berries. We are blessed with lots of great strawberry fields in the Triad for “you-pick” with the family. Whether you are eating them fresh or whether you froze the bounty for later recipes, or simply didn’t have time and are buying at farmers’ markets or the grocery store, here are some healthy recipes everyone will love.

HEALTHY STRAWBERRY BANANA SMOOTHIE

STRAWBERRY CRISP

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup baby spinach 1 banana 2 cups strawberries, frozen ¼ cup oats 1 Tbsp. flax meal 1 Tbsp. Chia seeds ¼ cup Greek vanilla yogurt 1 scoop unflavored protein powder (optional) 1 mandarin orange, peeled (optional) Almond milk (optional) 1 cup ice

INGREDIENTS: 32 oz. strawberries, fresh or frozen, hulled and quartered ¼ cup white sugar 2 Tbsp. corn starch 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats One-third cup white sugar One third cup brown sugar ½ tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. salt ½ cup butter, melted (1 stick)

1. Blend all the ingredients in a blender with just enough liquid to turn the blades. Add more yogurt, or almond milk. or a peeled mandarin orange (without seeds), if more liquid is needed.

2. Serve immediately or freeze for later.

1. Preheat oven to 350° and spray a 9 x 9” square pan with cooking spray.

2. In a bowl, toss strawberries, ¼ cup white sugar and cornstarch.

3. Place berries in prepared pan.

4. In a separate bowl, mix flour, oats, one-third cup white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt.

5. Add melted butter and mix well. Spread oatmeal mixture on top.

STRAWBERRY FRUIT SNACKS INGREDIENTS: 3 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and halved (or frozen thawed and drained) ¼ cup coconut milk 2-4 Tbsp. honey to taste ¼ cup gelatin DIRECTIONS: 1. In a small saucepan, bring strawberries and coconut milk to a low simmer for 3-4 minutes, squishing the berries with a potato masher to release their juices.

2. Place the warm strawberry mixture into a blender with honey and blend until smooth. Add more honey to sweeten, if needed.

3. Add gelatin, blending until smooth 4. Pour the strawberry gelatin mixture into mold and freeze for 15-30 minutes or refrigerate for up to an hour, so gelatin sets up.

5. Pop the fruit snacks out of the mold and serve. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

6. Bake 35 minutes or until topping is golden and berries and bubbly.

7. Serve immediately with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Summer Fresh Berry Galette**

BY SARA WILES Summer desserts can be tough to choose.

Between the heat and the humidity, sometimes a heavy, dense dessert simply does not sound appetizing. When the temperatures begin to rise, I stick to fresh flavors—citrus, seasonal fruit, fresh cream. Galettes make great desserts, as you can incorporate all of these flavors! Not to mention their simplicity and ability to adapt to your desired flavor or ingredients. This particular recipe, featured below, utilizes summer’s best—berries.

Top with a dollop of fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and it’s a match made in heaven. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS:

FOR THE PASTRY DOUGH: 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for your work surface 1 teaspoon salt 24 tablespoons (3 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into ½-inch pieces, or grated ¾ cup ice cold water FOR THE FILLING: 4 cups berries of your choice (strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries work nicely) 2 tablespoons lemon juice ¼ cup sugar 3 tablespoons flour

DIRECTIONS: 1. Mix the dough: In a food processor, combine the flour and salt and pulse briefly to mix. Scatter the butter over the top and pulse just until the mixture forms coarse crumbs about the size of peas. Drizzle the ice water over the flour mixture and pulse just until the dough starts to come together. Transfer the dough to a work surface, divide into 3 equal pieces and press each into a flat disk. Set 1 disk aside and wrap the remaining 2 disks in plastic wrap for future use.

2. Roll out the dough: Preheat an oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll out into a 13-inch round. Fold the round in half, transfer to the prepared sheet and unfold the round.

3. Fill and bake the galette: In a bowl, lightly stir together the berries, lemon juice, sugar and flour. Spoon the filling onto the dough, leaving a 2-inch border uncovered around the edge.

Fold the edge up and over the filling, forming loose pleats.

Bake until the filling is bubbling and the pastry is golden brown, about 25 minutes. Transfer the galette to a wire rack and let cool slightly. Cut into wedges and serve. Makes one 9-inch galette; makes 3 pastry dough disks total. **Original recipe courtesy of Williams Sonoma
