My

late summer vacation is all but a distant memory now, and for those with school-age children, life is back to earlier bedtimes, packing lunches and homework.

I was always sad to see the summer and relaxed schedule go, but there was always a little part of me happy for the routine.

What a whirlwind this past month has been! I had the most amazing surprise ever when the Pink Heals fire trucks appeared at my house. Thanks to Lana at the Village Inn Hotel and Event Center and my dear friend Keela for an experience I will never forget! Pink firetrucks from the national and local chapters roared into the Asbury Place neighborhood on a hot July day. Too many friends to count lined up to hug me and I was overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude for this outpouring of support.

What an amazing organization this is! More to follow in the October issue on them, and be sure to mark your calendar for the Forsyth Woman’s Girls’ Night Out Pink Heals fundraiser on October 10th.

Cal Ripken World Series is for Kids and Community

BY CAROLYN S. PETERSON Photography by Jill Osborn Having a nationwide baseball tournament come to Clemmons, NC, is not only a big deal for kids, parents and coaches, but also the community. Barry Leonard, President of South West (SW Athletics, said, “The tournament was just the beginning of big things for both SW Athletics and Clemmons, NC. We are currently in line to host the 2018 9U Region. The economic impact for Clemmons was around 2.3-2.7 million for the ten days the teams were in our community. The most important thing for SW Athletics was how the community embraced the event. We had alumni of SW Athletics come back and volunteer, watch the games and donate to the event. It’s been overwhelming, to be honest.”

So how was Clemmons, NC, chosen to host this tournament? “We, SW Athletics, were selected by the Babe Ruth League (a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to developing better citizens by providing properly supervised baseball and softball competition for players 5–18 years old) 18 months ago when they came and visited our facility and community and chose us to be the host site. Since 1963, Southwest has been a premier location for youths of Forsyth County to play baseball and softball. Our complex is busy ten months out of the year because many of our fields are Astro Turf, allowing ball to be played February through November,” Barry commented. SW Athletics had two teams competing in the tournament.

SW Red played in the State Tournament, won the tournament and received an automatic bid to the World Series, finishing the tournament 2–3. The “host team,” SW Blue, opted to play in the Regional Tournament, won the Regional tournament and finished the World Series at 3–3. Beyond the opportunity for the players, the Cal Ripken World Series brought quite a few people into the Clemmons, NC, area with great benefits for local businesses.

“We saw 10,000 plus people over the course of the week visit our facility 10 teams total, 2 of those from SW Athletics. The turnout was tremendous, and the support from our community is something we will never forget. The first thing you heard from those new to our area, in town for the tournament, was how nice the people were here. Local businesses, especially the restaurants, knew who these kids and teams were and went above and beyond to make them feel at home. The Banquet of Champions, which was a dinner held at Village Inn, was a great way to kick off the tournament and bring everyone together,” stated Barry.

Everyone likes to bring home a trophy and be known as the best, but for SW Athletics, having the Cal Ripken World Series come to their home field meant much more than where they finished. “The people and businesses of Clemmons, NC, showed us that they really appreciate our program and what we bring to the community. We bring a tremendous amount of value to the area, and it feels good to know that we’re appreciated.

Those involved with SW Athletics realize how fortunate we are to live in Clemmons and the support that we get from the Town Council is something that we owe a tremendous amount of gratitude for, and we don’t take that support lightly. There are bigger things to come to this area, that is for sure,” Barry said.

A Date Night with New Friends Invitation

feeling of joy, giddiness, and euphoric love arrives on hearing the statement, “Let’s plan a date night and spend quality time together!” Whether the words are texted or received on a post-it note, uttered face-to-face or through a Skype session, the response does not require thought. Of course, the three-lettered answer is stated in capital letters or screamed in great excitement! We love time with our significant other, and a chance to openly express thoughts and banter with ideas. It often is the one reason we fell in love yet, the unexpected happens. Our attempts to understand and communicate clearly often lead to conflict and frustration, and, sometimes, separation. Jean Brewer, of the Forsyth Chapter organization “Better Marriage,” understands that relationships can be challenging yet, she would like to offer dating and married couples the chance to receive an irrefutable gift. Quite simply, the gift combines a date night with free child care, dinner for a nominal fee, meeting new local couples, and gaining practical tools to improve your relationship. How could any couple say, “No”?

Better Marriages has been termed a premier national organization, not only for couples who want to take charge of their relationship, but also to live happily ever after. In Winston-Salem, on Tuesday, September 12th at Trinity United Methodist Church, dating and married couples can gather together to participate in the invitation and gift of date night.

You will meet Joe and Jamie Blankenship, who assist couples in appreciating why they enjoy their significant other. oe says, “We present the information from a standpoint that if you are going to have a worthwhile relationship, we can offer a layer of practicality as an experienced married couple. Joe may encourage thought by starting with, “When my parents would argue, my dad would stand up.” And, Jamie may recall that her parents never argued in front of her. The question would then be posed, “How do we argue?” Joe and Jamie, to guide the dialogue, would share how one person would leave the room, while the other would stomp and demand to resolve the situation. The couples are then invited to analyze their patterns by exchanging ideas and talking together. Joe shares, “We talk about our experiences and invite couples to partake in the dialogue. Many of the practices, from [whoever] in our family cut the Thanksgiving turkey to who took responsibility for the finances and household tasks, were learned through witnessing a past relationship. By learning strategies, we can be saved…a lot of pain and agony, and discover how to strengthen and build our own relationship.”

Mornings at the Museum

It’s

another idyllic morning at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. The grass is damp, the air is crisp, and the birds are chirping as a dozen children stroll through the Forecourt Garden and enter the museum.

Some clasp their mother’s hands, nervous to see what the morning will hold.

Others rush to the studio, excited for the hands-on activity that awaits them. In 1967, when Barbara Babcock Millhouse established her family home as a museum, she envisioned an institution with outstanding art and exceptional programs.

Reynolda House is an organization with education at its core; encouraging curiosity in all of its visitors, including young children, comes naturally.

Reynolda House’s newest program focuses on early childhood education. A grant from the PNC Foundation has enabled the museum to offer three popular programs geared toward children under the age of five: “Mornings at the Museum,” “Reynolda Read Aloud,” and “Reynolda Roundabout.” The programs serve a specific purpose in the Winston-Salem community, which has been identified as an area falling behind in student literacy rates. Research shows that from their birth until third grade is a critical time for children learning how to read. After third grade, reading becomes an integral part of instruction, and students struggling to read are at risk of falling behind their peers. At the beginning of the 2012–2013 school year, 43% of incoming kindergartners in Forsyth County did not meet literacy benchmarks and were susceptible to falling behind.

Reynolda’s early childhood programs are designed to help ameliorate this problem.

Mornings at the Museum is a weekly program that spans six weeks. Each session is comprised of about an hour of interdisciplinary activities. Each “Morning” has a theme: a painting from the museum’s collection, an object from the historic house, or a piece of art from a temporary exhibition. By the end of the six weeks, children and parents have explored many different facets of Reynolda.

“Mornings at the Museum provides preschoolers and their caregivers with an opportunity to experience storytelling or an artistic inspiration, as well as art-making in the studio, hands-on discovery, and play during each session,” says Tracy Wilson, who leads the monthly program.

Early Childhood Programs

Reynolda makes early childhood education fun! Learning to read doesn’t have to be about sitting still the museum’s programs are intended to promote engagement on a personal level. For some children, this may be a kinetic experience in the studio. Other children may thrive when asking questions about a painting.

Reynolda Read Aloud is a shorter program, and more than just “story time.” Like Mornings at the Museum, Reynolda Read Aloud stories are intended to explore a particular aspect of Reynolda or its collections. Each Reynolda Read Aloud also includes an activity related to the selected story. Reynolda Read Aloud occurs each month, on the third Friday from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Children from ages 2–5 are welcome, and the program is free for all participants. Reynolda Roundabout invites caregivers of children in strollers to participate in walking tours of the grounds. The program takes place in the spring.

On one recent morning, young children participating in Mornings at the Museum started with a hands-on activity.

Program participants trickled into the studio and were greeted by a model farm and building blocks to introduce the day’s theme. For example, children played with a model farm, set up in a tub of corn kernels, before seeing an exhibition all about the farm. Next up was story time. Children sat on cushions and listened to a story related to the painting they would see later in the gallery. It was organized chaos as the children formed a single file line. “Hands in your pockets, or make a ducktail,” she reminded them, as they entered the historic house and galleries. (The museum often encourages young visitors to make a “ducktail” with their hands behind their back as a reminder not to touch the art and furniture.)

The children examined the art with wide eyes. They moved as close to the art as they could—but never closer than the stipulated arm’s length, innocent and inquisitive.

like that, the summer is over, and we are back in the swing of busy days and hectic schedules! Work, school, practices and homework consume our time, and it seems there are never enough hours to get it all done. While many of us have already done back-to-school shopping for the year, countless teachers and educators are still working hard to supply their classrooms with the necessary tools not provided to them by the school system.

While donating money is always appreciated, Educator Warehouse Director Karel Chandler also needs volunteers. The Educator Warehouse also benefits greatly from direct donations of much-needed supplies.

Some teachers will spend more than $500 of their own money on materials as basic as pencils and paper. Many students do not come prepared with the requested supplies, and teachers find themselves bridging the gap to keep their students focused on what’s important—learning! This is where The Educator Warehouse strives to help, year after year! This non-profit helps all teachers employed in the WS/FCS system who have filled out a simple application on the school district’s website. Each quarter, teachers are allowed to shop for classroom supplies using points they have been given, as opposed to their hard-earned dollars.

Megan E. Bryant will be one of the writers participating in the 2017 Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors, September 7th–10th, in downtown Winston-Salem. Make plans to attend this annual festival and meet Megan and the many other writers showcasing their talents.

After graduating from New York University, Megan worked as a children’s book editor for five years, and in 2006 made the transition to full-time writing with a focus on children and young adults. She has written hundreds of storybooks, chapter books, easy readers, and board books. Her debut young adult novel, Glow, calls attention to a true period in American history. Scholastic Publishers will release her Pocket Geniuses series targeting second- through fifth-grade readers in 2018. Megan has several ideas for other young adult novels, so stay tuned to her social media for new books. She and her family live in Forsyth County, where Megan is active in church, teaching, Girl Scouts, and volunteering in the community.

About Glow: Megan weaves the story of Glow between two periods of history. Lydia is a young woman who begins a job during World War I and shares her story via the letters she writes to her beau fighting in the war. ulie is a modernday young woman who is also working and hoping to replenish her college fund. Megan skillfully adapts her writing style to each of the two characters to reflect the period in which each lives.

Julie discovers an old painting while rummaging through a consignment shop and is intrigued by its secret. It glows in the dark and reveals a completely different picture! ulie is obsessed with the quest to find more works by this unknown artist and discover the artist’s technique in the glowing hidden pictures. Her obsession takes hold and begins to override her relations with her mom, her best friend, and her new friend, Luke. The danger she has put herself and others in is disclosed in dramatic fashion and uncovers a dark history in America’s factories.

Glow reveals a period in American industry when there were no defined safety guidelines for employees employers were not subject to regulations or disclosure regarding the conditions or impact of work on the lives of factory workers. In this situation, young girls, known later as the “Radium Girls,” used radioactive paint to make the world’s first glow-in-the-dark product (watches for the military). They worked without any safety precautions and ultimately became radioactive themselves. The intense, detailed work resulted in the practice of “lip pointing,” that is, ensuring the brush tip was pointed by shaping the point with their mouth, thus ingesting radioactive

paint on a daily basis.

They were told the paint was harmless and, in fact, good for them! Girls were encouraged to practice their technique and painted their nails or created glow-in-the-dark jewelry on their skin. Many lost their lives to radioactive poisoning. Even today, Geiger counters still register radioactivity at their gravesites.

Megan will be in conversation with fellow young adult writer Martha Brockenbrough, author of Alexander Hamilton, Revolutionary, on Saturday, September 9th. The session will be a Teen Panel from 4 4:45 at Reynolds Place, to be followed by a book signing.

daughter emerged from the basement with a box in her hand, exclaiming, “Can we play this game?” Ah, it was Monopoly. How many evenings did my grandmother, sister, and I return to our seats in the dining room to toss the dice and take our turn? Decades later, it is a good feeling to watch my child, now, realize playing the game can reap great rewards or deplete her funds just as quickly! Even before the age of seven, parents can start guiding their child in the rewards of earning coins or dollars, saving for the future or a worthwhile purchase.

• A great place for children to practice spending their money is at a yard sale. Kids will discover their money stretches much farther than if shopping in a store.

Parents awake in the early morning to the sound of the running steps of their child, delighted to discover the tooth fairy not only came, but left behind a crisp bill or several shiny coins. How often do parents smile at the practically screaming sentiment, “I am rich!” When money falls out of holiday or birthday cards, or she awakes to find a monetary surprise underneath her pillow, it resonates with the feeling of having a great possession. The immediate question may be, “What should I do with it?” This leads toward an ideal “teachable moment.” The windfall can be divided, for future spending and saving. Allow children to calculate the rewards when a set dollar amount saved weekly compounds monthly, yearly, and after five years. This will also help children understand the need for great patience and dedication.

The jump from educational board games emphasizing counting, taking turns, and the competition of either winning or losing takes on a more advanced role when money enters each player’s hands. With particular games, such as “The Game of Life” or “Monopoly,” both having a “Junior” edition, these family games expand on lessons such as learning through spending and having to pay the unexpected bill. Thank goodness, pretending with play money is still an adventure and provides great “life” lessons. While video games offer speed of play, with the classic board games the act of holding, counting, and receiving money, moving a token, and sitting with the family is still exciting!

A • Encourage children who accompany you to the grocery store to comparison shop. Allow children to judge the amount for the price, and learn the value of brand names versus a generic brand.

• Children can also look through grocery store advertisements or set up a pretend grocery store at home in the game of “How Much Can You Buy for $20?” In learning the cost of items and produce, children can gain a realistic understanding of the world of commerce.

Allow children to see how monthly income is divided between bills, savings, and spending. When parents use the words, “Put it back,” or “No!” to a requested item, there can be a follow-up conversation that explains why every “want” is not purchased.

Young children will be eager to complete designated tasks and chores for an allowance. With any job that offers a payment, sit down and discuss the expectations, the price of the task, and the repercussions if the job is not completed or satisfactory. Allow children to understand that money is not easy to obtain. It takes work and dedication. In helping children develop the ability to save, provide half the allowance in either coins or one-dollar bills.

Empowerment arrives when a neighbor offers a preteen or teenager the opportunity to receive payment in exchange for completing a task. All the guidance and training has been a stepping-stone toward this very moment. Whether the preteen or teenager is asked to help with a family business, tend a yard, care for a house, walk a dog, or babysit, earning money is a good motivation to earn a reputation as a responsible young adult.

And finally, to young people learning to deal with money: having money is an empowering feeling. As much as you see bills and coins and the swipe of a credit card actively used, there’s also a need for saying “No” to your wishes and understanding why part of your money needs to be wisely saved! It’s your turn to roll the dice! May fortune be on your side!

But in the six months following that joyous day, she and husband, Todd, noticed that Jayden did not respond to noises. The couple discussed their concerns with a pediatrician, but the doctor didn’t seem overly concerned at the time.

Mona Yennior gave birth to son, ayden, six years ago, the firsttime mom thought he was perfect.

“Just perfect,” she says with a smile.

The worried parents decided to conduct a few tests of their own. Behind Jayden’s back, they slammed two books together. No response.

Then they played a French horn. No response.

“We started with small sounds, and then we made them bigger,” says Todd, who lives with his family in Lewisville. “Jayden never turned around. He didn’t even move.”

Alarmed, the couple took Jayden to an audiologist for proper testing. The diagnosis they received that day would change their lives forever.

“He failed the tests on both sides—both of his cochleas were underdeveloped,” Mona explains. “He got hearing aids at eight months old, and there was a 50-50 chance that he wouldn’t ever be able to talk. You have your worst thoughts when you are going through something like this. What’s going to happen? What is my child going to be like?

We thought that we had this perfect child and then found out that he hadn’t heard our voices the whole time.”

About a year later, Jayden received a cochlear implant—a surgically implanted electronic device that provides sound signals to the brain in one of his ears. Then, to hasten development of his lagging language skills, the family began working with a speech pathologist to learn “cued speech.” Cued speech is a visual mode of communication in which mouth movements and hand shapes combine to make the phonemes of spoken

language look different.

Not long after their son’s surgery, the Yenniors were invited to attend a retreat hosted by The CARE Project, a nonprofit organization in North Carolina that provides weekend retreat experiences and support for families with children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

They spent a weekend on Bald Head Island and enjoyed having child care for the first time since Jayden was born. At the time, Mona was pregnant with daughter Ariyana, now four years old.

Spending time with families like their own, and hearing from professionals what to expect on their journey with Jayden, is an experience they will never forget.

“You can’t have a child with hearing loss and not feel the loss,” Todd says. “It gave me a sense of comfort knowing that there are other guys out there going through the loss. Men, in particular, don’t talk about emotions so much. Being given the opportunity to open up a little bit, and having the mentors there, it helped.”

The Yenniors were especially thankful to tap into such a supportive community, because they don’t have family close by. “We had just moved to North Carolina back in 2010, and we had no actual support here,” Mona says.

“It was something we needed. No one tells you to be prepared for something like this— that you are going to have a lot of ups and downs in life.”

These days Jayden is thriving. After spending his preschool years in a special class for hearing-impaired students, he begins first grade this fall in a regular class at Lewisville Elementary School with a full-time “transliterator” by his side.

“We all worked so hard on this child. He speaks so well, and he reads on a secondgrade level now,” Mona says with pride. “We live literally across the street from the school.

We have been waiting for this day.”

Hispanic League Celebrates 25 Years with

“We

are excited to be celebrating 25 years as the Hispanic League of WinstonSalem,” said Juan Aguilar, Program Coordinator of the Hispanic League. “What began as a small group of Hispanics getting together to celebrate our different cultures has now turned into a large community outreach program.”

For the past 25 years, the Hispanic League has been hosting their FIESTA event in downtown Winston-Salem to promote diversity, celebrate Hispanic/Latino heritage and advance a cross-cultural understanding of the different cultures that make up a large percentage of our community. What started as a small multicultural festival has today become a renowned Winston-Salem tradition, boasting an average attendance of over 20,000 people. This statistic alone makes it one of the largest one-day festivals in the Triad!

Aguilar, who has been working with the Hispanic League since January of last year, was prompted to join the group because of the work they do with the Hispanics/Latinos of the area. “I really was impressed with the variety of different outreach programs the League does.”

This year, the event will be held on Fourth Street, Poplar Street, Spruce Street, Holly Avenue, at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, Sawtooth School for isual Art, Winston Square Park, and the Hanebrands Theater Parking Area.

In true “fiesta-style,” the event will begin at 8:00 am with the Running of the Bulls, “Magnifico Mile.” This run begins at the corner of Poplar Street and Holly Avenue and continues down 2nd Street to N. Chestnut and returns. Just like the original bull-running event in Spain, in this event runners will be racing at top speed. The one mile run/walk awards prizes to the top 3 runners, including a gift of 30,000 American Airline miles to the top male and top female runner! Other awards include medals for those placing in each age group, as well as awards for those who are “best dressed.”

This upcoming September 23rd, downtown Winston-Salem will once again host the Hispanic League’s best-known event, FIESTA! The streets will be bustling to the beat of Latin music, the sights of Salsa dancers and aroma of mouthwatering food that makes up FIESTA 2017! What makes this year’s FIESTA unique in itself, is that it marks the 25th anniversary of the original event.

The festival itself begins at 11:30 am, with a naturalization ceremony by USCIS in the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts. This is the second time this ceremony will be performed at FIESTA, with an estimated 25 individuals becoming citizens of the United States. irectly following will be the annual “Flags of Our Heritage Parade,” stopping at each of the three stages. This vibrant parade celebrates all Latin American countries and Hispanic Americans and finishes at the main stage with a proclamation from Mayor oines and other officials.

While the appealing food and live entertainment is what usually draws attendees to FIESTA, the event also offers unique arts and crafts, as well as vendors selling their distinctive jewelry and attire. The event, which is rain or shine, also boasts a healthy-living area, as well as a fun-filled children’s area. Public parking garages are located on the corner of 4½ Street and Poplar and Cherry Street, near the Embassy Suites. There is also “on the street” parking in the surrounding area.

While FIESTA is one of the Hispanic League’s most celebrated functions, it should not outshine the League’s other first-rate community outreach programs.

“What first drew me to work for the League was that they were strong advocates for education programs for the Latino/Hispanic groups in the area,” said Aguilar.

The Hispanic League hosts a variety of different educational series, such as the Middle School Achievers’ program. This group, which originally started in 1997, is now at 9 different schools in the WSFC school system. The program helps mentor Hispanic/Latino students through providing them with eye-opening educational programs. For example, different speakers from the Early College Program come in to talk with the students about how they can also gain early college credit. Former Middle School Achiever students also come in to talk about how they overcame their own obstacles in life. Likewise, the group does a variety of different team building and writing activities.

After middle school, the students are encouraged to become a part of the YMCA Latin Achievers or Crosby Scholars. Following high school, the Hispanic League is able to offer college scholarships to deserving Hispanic/Latino students. This year at their Spanish Nite Gala, the League was able to award 41 scholarships.

Since the year 2000, the program has awarded 369 scholarships valued at $825,000.

Universal Pre-K – Early Opportunity toward a Bright Future

Family Services is spearheading the Universal Pre-K Initiative, whose goal is to give children a developmental opportunity early in their lives toward that bright future we envision for them. “The goal for the Universal Pre-K Initiative,” Bob Feikema, CEO and President of Family Services, shared, “is to make available to all four-year-old children in Forsyth County affordable, high-quality pre-school.

Studies indicate that four-year-olds who attend a high-quality development program are ready to learn when they arrive in kindergarten. Kindergarten teachers have long said that they can identify which children have had Pre-K and which have not.”

This initiative is a voluntary program planned for the approximately 4,500 four-year-olds in Forsyth County. The proposed student/teacher ratio is expected to be 18/2, with one teacher at a bachelor’s educational level and the assistant at an associate level.

What does a typical day for a Pre-K class involve?

Appropriate schedules provide a balance of structure and flexibility, along with smooth transitions between activities.”

Thinking About Having a Baby?

Six Smart Steps to Take Before You Get Pregnant

you hoping to become pregnant soon? How exciting! ou’re probably already thinking about the “fun stuff” baby names, nursery decor, and tiny clothing. What every prospective mom wants most, however, is a healthy baby. With this most important goal in mind, here is a preconception checklist to help ensure your healthy pregnancy and an optimal start in life for your baby: BEFORE YOU GET PREGNANT...

1. Get a preconception checkup. It’s important to be as healthy as possible before you conceive a baby. A pre-pregnancy

exam can reveal health issues you may need to address before becoming pregnant. Be sure to talk to your doctor about: • All the prescription medications and over-the-counter products you take. Would these affect your unborn baby? If so, what alternatives are available?

• Medical history. Let the doctor know if you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, or an autoimmune disease such as lupus, or if you have had rubella (measles), chickenpox, or a sexually transmitted disease (ST . This information will help determine if you need certain immunizations, tests, or any special care during pregnancy.

• Family history. Are there are genetic disorders in your or your husband’s family, such as sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, or Gaucher disease? If so, it may be wise to ask your doctor for a referral to a genetic counselor.

2. isit your dentist. Although dental -rays involve a very minimal amount of radiation, one

benefit of planning ahead is the opportunity to completely protect your baby from even this tiny risk. Tell your dentist you’re planning a pregnancy and would like to get any -rays you may need now, before you conceive. The hormonal changes of pregnancy can affect oral health, so follow your dentist’s advice to ensure that your teeth and gums are in good health before pregnancy.

Some studies link periodontal disease to an increased risk for pre-eclampsia (toxemia , a condition that sometimes occurs in pregnancy. Toxemia poses a risk to both mom and baby due to high blood pressure and swelling caused by fluid retention.

3. If you drink alcohol or use drugs, stop now. Alcohol is a teratogen, a substance known to cause birth defects. Alcohol crosses the placenta and enters the baby’s body, so there is no amount of alcohol that is safe to drink during pregnancy. Some recreational drugs may also harm your unborn baby. If you are unable to stop drinking or taking drugs, tell your doctor or seek a mental health counselor with expertise in substance abuse. Until you stop drinking or using drugs, use birth control so you don’t become pregnant.

4. If you smoke, quit now. If you are a smoker, the very best thing you can do to ensure a healthy baby is

to stop smoking. Smoking nearly doubles the chances that your baby will have a low birth weight. Low birth weight babies are at risk for many very serious health problems. Smoking also increases the risk of premature birth or miscarriage.

5. Start taking folic acid now. Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps prevent birth defects in the

neural tube, the structure that develops into a baby’s brain and spinal cord. It is important to start taking folic acid before you become pregnant. Here’s why: neural tube development occurs very early in pregnancy when you may not yet even realize you are pregnant.

Therefore, folic acid needs to be in your body before pregnancy occurs. For most women, the correct amount is 400 micrograms (mcg) each day. However, if you are very overweight, have a hemoglobin disorder such as sickle cell disease, have diabetes, or take a medicine for seizures, you may need more. Check with your doctor. The easiest way to get folic acid is to take a multivitamin that contains the correct amount. (Read the label to be sure. ou can get extra folic acid from fortified breakfast cereals, spinach, broccoli, dried peas, orange juice, and beans.

6. Get moving! If you already exercise regularly, keep it up! If not, it’s time to make exercise a regular part of your lifestyle. Exercise relieves stress, strengthens muscles, combats depression, helps prevent constipation, and increases your energy level.

When you become pregnant, review your exercise regimen with your doctor. Make any modifications your doctor suggests, but continue to be physically active throughout your pregnancy. Not only will an active lifestyle benefit you physically and emotionally, it can even help make the delivery of your baby easier.

Modern-Day Momming

When

I thought about being a mom one day, I looked forward to so many things, but I knew so many other things would be hard. I looked forward to the first time I’d hear “I love you, Mommy” and the first time my baby would achieve some great milestone like walking or getting into medical school. However, I dreaded the first scary fever and the annoying comments I’d undoubtedly receive from other parents, grandparents and teenage cashiers at Starbucks.

The crazy part is that the annoying advice starts so much sooner than you ever expect it to, and there’s always some troll just around the corner waiting to streak through your parade with the “Just wait until _____” comment. “Your daughter said ‘Mama?’ Just wait until they really start talking because they’ll never shut up you’ll crave those quiet days.” Or, “I wish my baby had been a late walker… it was so much easier then.” Helpful hint: No matter what a parent says, the correct response is “Children are a blessing.” It seriously satisfies everyone all blessings come from somewhere, so no matter who or what you pray to, it fits.

I recently saw a oplait yogurt ad on T that sums up how I feel about being a parent in today’s society to a T. If you breastfeed in public, you are shameful.

If you choose formula, you are evil. If you work outside the home, you hate your kids. If you don’t work outside the

home, you and your lack of ambition are a drain on your husband and family.

I had a woman in church (IN CHURCH ask me what I “did” as I was straining to keep my baby from ripping my earring out the other day. I kind of just looked at my daughter and back at her and back at my daughter and back at her. Um, “this,” I thought. Luckily, I do have a little side hustle as a writer, but that’s more for me than anything else. I don’t really know a better way to ask that question, though so I don’t have much advice to offer to others. Maybe “So, is wrangling that apparent bipolar little gremlin your only job or does that in any way leave you time and energy for something that pays?”

Or, “I don’t know how you do it.” I like the second one even though it’s more of a statement than a question and I’d respond, “Well, children are a blessing.”

My daughter truly is a blessing, though… she has slept through the night since she was four weeks old and sleeps from 8:30 pm-8:30 am about 99 of the time. I constantly get asked when I’m going to have another baby, and I think…I already won the lottery once…what are the odds that’ll happen again? I can hear the trolls now. “It would be cruel for her not to have siblings…every only child I know hates being an only child.” Unfortunately and fortunately at the same time (that’s weird), I agree. She’ll have a sibling…when I’m good and ready and not a second before.

Margaritas are just really good right now… maybe they won’t be in a year or two…

maybe the lemon and lime crop just rocked this year…and last year. It probably also rocked the year I was pregnant and missed out…that would so be my luck. I mean, it must have, right? Lord knows my husband ordered one every…single…time we went out to eat at a Mexican restaurant or a restaurant that served margaritas.

Being a parent is hard. I thought the easiest part would be picking a name, but I was totally that parent HOL ING my child in the hospital talking to my husband about which name we were going with.

I honestly think you can make fun of every single name out there in some way.

Maybe just I can. And, maybe if I teach my daughter to have a thick skin, she’ll be able to shake off all the jerks that will find some way to make fun of her being tall or being smart or being gorgeous, or being generous or being the first person to conquer some amazing feat.

All modern-day parents know the best lesson we can teach our kids is how to stand up for what they believe in… no matter what. Take a side, but know why you’re on that side, and understand that someone else trying just as hard may have a really, really good reason for being on the opposite side. However, if your child can chew steak, maybe it’s time to give up some things from when he or she was a baby…food for thought. #childrenareablessing #hashtagsarelame

While perhaps not as radical and immediate a change as the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly, humans continually develop and change throughout life. The story centers on tracing Sal’s mother’s “disappearance pathway” on a six-day road trip taken by Sal and her eccentric paternal grandparents. Changing the “I Cannot Write” Mindset

hearing a writing assignment is due on Friday, most students’ inner voice tends to scream silent words of self-doubt. The mind may amplify, “Writing is so overwhelming.

I don’t know how to start,” or, “I am too critical of each sentence I write.”

You are not alone in your perception.

In fact, your feelings are quite common. The solution begins with understanding your social strengths, learning a few key writing strategies, constant practice, and accepting each assignment as a means to improve your abilities as a writer.

Personal Strengths Have you ever considered what makes you a great communicator? o you have a gift of contributing to a conversation, and are you often praised for your interesting ideas? Writing is just another form of talking and working through ideas and problems. The only exception is, writing allows each of us not to quickly respond, but to organize pondered thoughts into paragraphs; so, while you may be criticizing yourself for staring at the computer screen, thinking is truly the first step to writing. (And, thinking may take a few minutes, hours, or even 24 hours; therefore, once you receive an assignment, get started immediately!

A GOO ISTRACTION: Prior to writing, sometimes it is good to think through ideas while walking the dog, riding a bike, or even taking a shower.

Keep a notepad handy; inspiration may arrive at an untimely moment.

TALK TO THE WALLS: If the best

ideas usually come when you are talking out loud, find a location where you can close the door and talk openly. It may be wise to record your dialogue. Eventually, you will discover the right words and, if they are recorded, never have the chance to remark, “What did I say, again?”

OTTING OWN I EAS: If you are a visual learner, you may need to write down a few key points and their examples to know where to begin, and how to organize your information.

It is wise to walk away for a few hours to look at your thoughts clearly and with a different perspective. Writing should never be rushed.

Strategies: • Even authors and journalists feel overwhelmed by the task of writing.

Mental blocks do occur. Once you learn a few helpful strategies, the ability to sit down and write will improve.

• If you feel overwhelmed by the introduction, write down only one sentence of what you intend to say and move onto an easier task.

• Once you start writing, keep going.

It is important to focus on writing.

Once the draft is completed, then the effort can focus on editing.

• Introductions and conclusions are both important paragraphs. You can begin with a question or an enticing thought to keep the reader interested. Conclusions can offer the reader something to consider.

Writing is memorable, and you have the ability to make a reader return

and read it again and again!

• Use a thesaurus to discover a more concise word. This handy book will help you eliminate commonly used words, such as “really,” “very,” and “like.” With more practice, you will begin to use more exciting words that express your true feelings and thoughts.

• To increase the fluency of your writing, try not to begin two sentences with the same word, and take notice of how often you use the word “that.”

• Once you finish editing, read your writing out loud and correct those mistakes.

• Writing is rarely finished. Even published authors return to their work wishing to change a point or a character’s dialogue. With every criticism about your writing, think about how you can use the advice to improve.

Writers Need to Become Readers Writing surrounds us. It is found on menus and billboards, advertisements and in various types of formats, from social media to newspapers. Take notice of how a sentence is written and the use of vocabulary. If you are unsure of a word, take the time either to infer the definition or research the word’s meaning. And, since we never stop learning about our written language, we can improve both our understanding and editing skills just by paying attention and reading and analyzing everything!

Creating a Routine for the School Year

back to school after the lazy days of summer can be tough. There is a set time to get up in the mornings, a set time to go to bed at night, and homework time. Plus, throw in all the extracurricular activities, and it can be hard getting into a daily schedule. Below are a few ideas and tips to get your kids back into their schoolyear routine.

• One of the most important things parents can do to help their children is setting a standard time to wake up and go to bed. These times should be consistent each day. Start with deciding on the wake-up time first. Once children and parents know when they should arise in the morning, this will help dictate when they should go to sleep the night before. According to the Child evelopment Institute, eight hours of sleep per night is the absolute minimum, and kids should aim for nine to ten hours. Another tip to keep in mind is that a good day begins with a good night’s sleep. No matter how old you are, if you don’t sleep well, the next day you are cranky, tired, and can find it hard to concentrate. For students, a good night’s rest will give them the energy needed for the school day and all of their activities. A few weeks before school begins, start putting your kids to bed and waking them up a little earlier each day. Then, hopefully, by the time school starts, they will already be used to the new times.

• In addition to new bed times, go ahead and get your kids in a nightly and morning routine. At night, create a schedule which includes brushing your teeth, bathing, choosing clothes, and gathering homework for the following day.

Maybe this time includes talking about plans for the next day or spending one-on-one time between parents and children, and even reading a short book. Make sure they are aware of what needs to be done before lights go out.

the morning and day flow better. As for the morning, allow enough time for getting dressed, eating breakfast, and organizing everything needed for the day. Make sure your child knows what time the bus comes or when to leave for school if a parent takes them. A to-do list or chart can help with this. Give your child the list and post it around your house. That way they’ll know what needs to be done in the morning and when. Also, remember that a good day starts with a full belly. A student’s first meal of the day should be nutritional, giving them energy to focus and last all day. on’t forget about lunch, as well. Factor in the time, either morning or the night before, for your child to help pack their own healthy lunch.

• After-school routines are just as important as morning and nightly schedules. uring the summer, kids don’t have to worry about getting their homework done or figuring out how much time they have between soccer practice and bed-time. Create a schedule that works for your family and stick to it. Make changes until you find something that works for everyone. When developing this routine, think about whether or not your child needs time to relax and unwind after getting home from school, or if they can go straight into doing homework or extracurricular activities.

Establish times for homework, screen time, and dinner and keep to this schedule, when possible. Yes, you’ll have a play at school one night or a late baseball game that will alter your routine, but try to keep the times consistent from day to day. This will help your child learn and build new habits.

Beginning a new school year can be difficult for everyone.

To help your family adjust to a new schedule, try to put a positive spin on it. Reassure your child that everything will be fine, they’ll be learning fun things, seeing old friends, and making new ones. Before you know it, your kids will be completing the routine with little assistance from you.

When

we think about bullying, usually we’re thinking about children or teenagers. Statistically, it’s estimated that one in three children in United States schools experiences some form of bullying. Bullying is generally classified into four types physical, verbal, social/ relational, and cyber. Of these, verbal is considered the most frequently experienced.

Given the pervasiveness of the bullying problem, however, it stands to reason that there are many adults who carry the impact of bullying with them into adulthood. How are they coping with the aftermath? There are a number of studies in process to determine the long-term impact on adults.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS ATTRIBUTED TO PAST BULLYING? Trust Issues: Adults with a history of bullying victimization may find it difficult to trust others. Given past history, keeping others at arm’s length and not letting anyone get too close is a coping mechanism to avoid being hurt. This tends to result in few friendships and certainly impacts building a loving relationship.

Self-Esteem Issues: If you’ve been badgered for years, your ego is bound to take a hit. Self-esteem or self-worth is in many ways derived from feedback from others. Perhaps it’s congratulations on something done well, praise for a skill honed from years of study, a “Good job!” remark from someone you respect, a grade, or just a smile and hug from a loved one. How would you feel if those were missing in your life or so infrequent you had no memory of them? Sadly, it seems that many of us remember the negative feedback with more intensity than we should.

What is the result? Low self-esteem may keep someone

IMPACT ON ADULTS from stepping up to a challenge they’re more than capable of handling, but are unwilling to take a chance on, for fear of rejection or humiliation. Low self-esteem can keep one from achieving goals in any stage of life.

Developing Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms: As a coping tool, one may turn to food, alcohol, or drugs to mask the pain of past hurt.

Anger and Anxiety Issues: Living in a state of anxiety can be debilitating. Living with anger constantly pushed down can cause physical problems (ulcers, blood pressure issues, etc.) and depression.

On the other hand: Studies have also found that some who experienced bullying earlier in life find their inner strength and self-reliance stronger as a result. There may be a heightened sense of empathy for others. Perhaps there were outlets or a strong support network to mitigate the impact of bullying in those situations.

CAN ADULTS OVERCOME PAST BULLYING EXPERIENCES? Yes, there are many resources available to overcome the haunting shadow of bullying (self-help, counseling, therapy, to name a few). In his book, Names Will Never Hurt Me, local author Mark Stewart shares his story of years of bullying and how he overcame its impact and healed. It is a story of hope with recommendations for overcoming the past to build a life free from hurtful memories. Put the past in the past and look forward with renewed hope and joy.

Encouraging our children and teenagers to talk if they see or experience bullying can go a long way in avoiding taking the impact of bullying into adulthood.

Buddy Walk and Family Fun Festival

eelings of community, accomplishment, acceptance, and fun—they’re all part of the Piedmont own Syndrome Support Network’s (P SSN’s annual Buddy Walk and Family Fun Festival. This year’s event kicks off at 9 a.m. at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons on Saturday, September 30th.

The Buddy Walk was created by the National own Syndrome Society in 1995 to promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion of individuals with own syndrome.

But as the name “Buddy Walk and Family Fun Festival” implies, this local event is designed for the whole family—even those families without a relationship with someone with own syndrome. “The purpose of our event is to bring the community together for a day of fun,” said ana Alley, Executive irector of P SSN. “Whether you have a relative or friend with own syndrome, or simply want to support the work of P SSN while enjoying a fun morning out with the kids, the Buddy Walk and Family Fun Festival is for you!”

Registered participants will receive a Buddy Walk T-shirt, free food, drinks, games, crafts, inflatables, train rides, music, and more!

There will also be a talent show and a short walk (once around the high school track), which is optional for all guests.

P SSN is a nonprofit organization that, for the past 30 years, has worked to “ensure that individuals with own syndrome in the Piedmont area are valued, included, and given the opportunities to pursue fulfilling lives” by providing emotional support, educational opportunities, advocacy and training to parents, education and health care professionals, and members of the community.

Proceeds from the annual event are vital to ensuring that P SSN’s work in the community continues. The nonprofit provides support for parents and families of children with own syndrome all the way from birth (and even before) to adulthood. Their programs include “Next Chapter Book Clubs” to promote adult literacy, “No Limits II ances” to offer adults with different abilities the chance to socialize, and a parent education and support group that is open to families of children with any type of disability. The P SSN also provides resource notebooks for families affected by own syndrome, offers community grants and conference scholarships, and hosts a New Parent Celebration and parent support groups.

Attendance has grown at the Buddy Walk and Family Fun Festival each year, and P SSN expects 1,000 community members to come out this year. GOOD ADVICE FROM MY DAD

I

remember when I was about 12 years old, my dad and I came back from somewhere, we were sitting in our car in the driveway, and we just started talking. I had gotten this particular conversation started right before we pulled in the driveway when I asked him about the story he used to tell about his and mom’s plan to get a Winnebago and travel around the country when they retire. For those of you who are too young or not familiar with the term, Winnebago is a brand of R (recreational vehicle or motor home .

When I reminded him of this plan, he just smiled and said, “Yeah, I remember that. I still want to do that someday.”

Then he turned to me and told me something that only he would have known at that time, because I was nowhere near that point in my life.

He said, “Son, whatever you really want to do in life, make sure you try and do it while you’re young.” He continued, “ on’t wait until you retire and get old to do it, because things happen and it doesn’t always work out the way you plan.”

My twelve-year-old mind was confused, and I asked him something along the lines of, “What do you mean to do it early? What could get in the way or prevent you from doing what you really want to do when you retire?”

He responded with an array of potential issues, including, but not limited to, health matters that can be a problem, finances that are not what they should be, and he added, “Your children can also play a big part by what they do in their future, and where you would rather be instead.” He emphasized, “There are just so many things that can happen to prevent you from doing what it was you always thought you wanted to do.”

He could see the disappointment on my face; after all, at that age, I was looking forward to going with them on some of those trips in the future when I was older. He described further, “When you’re young you have plenty of time, plenty

of energy and most importantly, you have no fear. Nothing bothers you, and that’s the time you need to enjoy it, not when you get old, and fear begins to creep in along with health issues, and you’re too concerned about other things to take the leap of faith needed to make it happen.”

Of course, the further explanation at the time wasn’t helpful because, as a young kid, I didn’t really understand completely what he was saying and what it all meant. Now that I’m older, I understand very well what he was talking about. And agree wholeheartedly with his advice. If you have the opportunity, and you have the time and the means, you should definitely do what it is you want to do in life, big or small, as soon as the opportunity allows you to. on’t wait, because as my dad suggested, there are no guarantees in life except the present moment, and even that is continuously changing minute by minute.

The longer we wait, the more things there are that can interfere with our achieving our goals and dreams in life.

Sometimes we have no choice, and that’s a different matter. But in those instances where the right opportunity presents itself, he advises, we have to take advantage of it at that moment. The Latin aphorism for this, I believe, is “Carpe iem, seize the day!” After all, we may never get the chance again.

I wish I could say he and my mom fulfilled that dream, but unfortunately, life did throw a kink into their plan. They both were injured in an automobile accident late in life by a careless driver, and were unable to travel long distances by car afterward. They were, however, able to compromise and spend their winters on the shores of South Carolina, and their summers at home enjoying special times with their grown children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As for me, my wife, children and I were also able to enjoy some good times at the beach in the winter with my parents; so all was not lost, and I learned this valuable lesson in the process.

Sometimes in life, when it doesn’t work out as you planned, you just have to do the best you can with what you have. It just might work out better than you expected.

In Developing Friendship, We are Heroines in Our Story!

A

young girl in pigtails lets go of her mother’s hand and runs onto the playground. Within minutes, she is immersed between three girls and four boys, smiling and chattering, swinging and sliding, and enjoying the freedom of the outdoors. When she returns, out of breath, seeking a water break, she tells her mother, “No, I don’t know anyone’s name, but we’re all friends.” The etiology of friendship can be simple and sweet. No matter the age of the individual, through mere faith, we allow a new relationship to just happen. And a feeling of butterflies and giddiness still occurs as if we were the girl in pigtails, fearless to approach a new friend and begin investing in each other. How simple it is to sit and talk, and feel bonded to another person with similar interests or common experiences. You and I know that anyone who leaves the figurative playground feeling both enriched and happy, after years or decades, has achieved one of life’s greatest gifts. The most difficult aspect is having a choice either to fill our lives with positive relationships, or in some cases, to walk away.

We often don’t think of ourselves as lead characters or heroines in our own story, but that is exactly what we are. And the people who surround our inner and outer circle could be termed, respectively, supporting and minor characters. We are the leaders and decision makers, while others aid in supporting us, standing up for us, and sharing the role of friend. We believe everyone understands the golden rules comprising loyalty and kindness, honesty and respect, confidences and promises which are applicable in every situation, and at every age of life; yet, not all of our friends fit the definition. In fact, it is confusing when a friend does not inspire or influence us in positive ways. The questions may arise, “What bonds us together, why do I feel so frustrated, and is this a positive relationship?” And, sometimes, the answer leaves us to do what is right. We must be thankful for the lesson and gifts we are given during a friendship, and, very gently and bravely, let go!

Erin Kretzer, a mother of three daughters, writes, “Often, as we age and grow, friendship doesn’t come as easily. Teen girls begin to compete with one another, instead of building one another up.

Sometimes, friendship becomes a courtyard of hurt or frustration. I often remind my girls that it is better to have ‘one dollar than 100 pennies.’ This analogy has helped them see that if they happened upon one friend of great substance, it would far outweigh a larger number of friends. Each daughter has struggled with finding loyalty in friendship. There have been instances in their developing friendships of betrayal of trust, dishonesty, and imbalance of interest.

It is difficult to instill in young women that they should always exhibit kindness and compassion, yet be assertive enough to abandon an unhealthy, taxing relationship. My daughters have befriended people that chose activities (recreational drug use, promiscuity) that have the potential to compromise them, and they are left to decide between continuing the friendship and walking away. The decision of walking away seems especially difficult when, by nature, we all desire to have friends with whom we can share most intimately, and feel understood.”

With a pure heart and a desire to be a good person and friend, we often are faced with a connection that leaves us feeling disheartened.

We believe the apologies and try harder in hopes a relationship can strengthen. As lead heroines, we cannot sit by our phones and wait, hoping a friend will be there. It is not a disappointment or a reflection of our good heart. We cannot make others be something they are not, nor can we become angry and expect others to change.

Our role is to envelop those who chose us, too!

Hey, it’s me: local college freshman currently freaking out about my new life, not exactly discovering much, besides the fact that I have no idea how to function on a collegiate level. There are a lot of new things to manage when going to college: schedules to memorize, people to meet, activities to be involved in, majors to declare. On top of that, there are meal swipes to ration, there is laundry to be done, grades to keep up, tuition to pay, and responsibility to take. It can be overwhelming at times, especially because no one besides yourself will accomplish all of these tasks it’s just you. The supposedly responsible and composed, emotionally stable, adult, intellectual you. College is the first real introduction to a truly independent lifestyle, and to be honest, no one is ever completely prepared for that. So here I am, sharing with you the only college advice I have to offer in hopes of dismissing some worries surrounding the inevitable tragedy that is growing up.

From experience, I find that there are three stages of worry and fear that every college student goes through: financial, social, and academic. It’s a realm of insecurities destined to affect us before we do all of this “changing the world for the better,” “becoming an adult” stuff. Everyone tells you how to avoid freshman fifteen. They tell you which dining hall has the best food and to join clubs. They tell you that college will be the experience of a lifetime, making sure to leave out the very important, very expensive bills, the stresses of meeting new people, and the academic disappointment and competition sure to find you. Because that’s what people do, right? Focus on the positives. It’s not a bad thing it just enables us to fear the disadvantages coming our way.

Fear number one: college is expensive. It’s hard to wrap your mind around investing that much money in yourself. It’s hard to save that much money or justify the tens of thousands of dollars of debt. Simply know this, college is expensive, but it is manageable, and your school is on your side. Make a financial aid appointment, continue applying for scholarships, save as much money as you can, and do your research! ou are not the first person to go to college. Others have been in your same position and have advice on how to smartly tackle debt. ou will be perfectly fine if you decide that you are worth this experience and you are well educated in the world of payment plans and strategies.

Fear number two: “Socially, I might not handle myself that well.” It’s hard to envision yourself living with a roommate, especially if you are used to living by yourself. Socially, that may be an adjustment for you, just like public speaking on a regular basis will be an adjustment, meeting new friends and people every day will be an adjustment, and being more independent than you are used to will be an adjustment. College is an adjustment, but one that your professors, resident assistants, and new friends will help you transition through.

Fear number three: “I’m not smart enough for college.” Sure, there will be assignments that may test you, and there will be professors that expect a lot more than you are used to. The great thing is, they know that. While it may not get you any sympathy, it will get you help academically if you need it. There are office hours for each professor as well as writing centers and peer tutors willing to help. Getting acclimated to the standards of learning expected on a collegiate level may take a minute, but if you are studious, and you care, you will be fine.

However, if there’s a class that is just not working out, the office hours aren’t helping, and no amount of tutoring is pulling your grade up, it might be beneficial to drop the class. That doesn’t mean you aren’t smart enough to take it it just means that maybe the professor doesn’t teach in such a way that you learn well, or that taking a prerequisite now may help you understand the material of the class better if you should take it in the future.

College is a lot of things, but it’s ultimately yours to decide how to handle and yours to experience. on’t let clich s about it being too hard or too stressful get in the way of how much fun you will have. Most importantly, don’t fear and don’t worry. Everything will work out.

some children and adults, it can be tough at times to read, spell, and distinguish numbers, and often their order can get reversed. This characteristic is one of the many traits a person has when they are diagnosed with dyslexia. According to the International yslexia Association, dyslexia can be defined as “a learning disability that is characterized by difficulties in word recognition and decoding abilities.” Also, a person could have trouble with reading comprehension, spelling, and interpreting words. The disease doesn’t affect a person’s intelligence. yslexia can be diagnosed in a person at any age and remain with him or her throughout the rest of their life. However, it is more common to be diagnosed as a child. Researchers haven’t found one direct cause for the disease however, some possible causes are genes and heredity, as well as brain anatomy and activity. With genes and heredity, about 49 of parents with dyslexia will have children with this condition, according to the website “Understanding yslexia.” Also, 40 of siblings will have reading issues. As for brain anatomy and activity, a person with dyslexia will have difficulty understanding sounds in words and recognizing how to spell different words. However, with tutoring and assistance, a person’s brain patterns and activity can change to properly hearing and spelling words.

This disease is more common than people realize.

Symptoms vary from person to person. Key signs are: trouble decoding words, matching letters to sounds, and reading words accurately and fluently. Other symptoms include difficulty telling time, managing time, thinking primarily with images, dizziness, headaches, or stomach aches when reading. They may also go through normal developmental stages early or late in their age group. However, dyslexics are known to have great long-term memory, are talented in the arts, and have high IQ’s. In addition, they learn best through handson experiences. iagnosing dyslexia is usually done by a doctor or school professional. Questions, reading tests,

and other assessments will be given to measure a person’s skills. The tests will help show someone’s learning style, language and problem-solving skills, and IQ. Before evaluating skills, many doctors and school professionals will first rule out any medical problems that could come into play. ision and hearing are also checked. Family history will be asked, as well as looking at other issues, such as A H and mental health issues, that could affect a person’s learning and comprehension. Tests and assessments aren’t given to a person unless signs of dyslexia are seen.

There are various forms of treatment for dyslexia.

Medicines and counseling aren’t used to manage the disease. The most common way to better understand dyslexia is by using educational tools to improve skills. The first thing a person should do after being diagnosed or having a child diagnosed is learn about the disease and how best to treat it. For children three years old and older, school professionals will help create an individualized education program to match the child’s learning needs. For example, this plan will identify specific disabilities, goals and objectives for the school year, learning needs and styles, and will help create a treatment team for the child. This team can include the parents, teachers, and school personnel. Special education assistance is also available, as well as tutoring and teacher aides. Parents can play a big role in helping their child understand and handle their dyslexia. In addition to working at school, parents can assist their child with guided oral reading, connecting letters to sounds in everyday activities, and using the sounds to form words. The most important thing a parent can do for their child is advocate for the best possible education in school to manage their dyslexia.

Managing dyslexia can be tough shortly after being diagnosed, but it gets easier. Understanding the disease, the symptoms, and the treatments is valuable. Once a person has a treatment plan and assistance, their dyslexia will improve, and their skills will strengthen, giving them more confidence and self-esteem.

exactly, is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL and how can this help children?

According to the CASEL (the Collaborative Association of Social and Emotional Learning organization website, SEL “is a process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions.”

However, this isn’t the only thing SEL can help students do. SEL also helps students “set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.”

SEL is broken down into five different segments, developed by CASEL, which includes the following: • Self-Awareness: recognizing and being able to label one’s feelings, ultimately being able to identify one’s limitations.

• Responsible Decision Skills: making ethical choices based on consideration of one’s feelings, goals, alternatives and outcomes.

Schools around the country are beginning to treat Social Emotional Learning with the same respect as other core subjects, like math, science, social studies and language arts. However, it wasn’t always this way. In the past, schools were very informal and disorganized about incorporating SEL into the curriculum. The school infrastructure was not solid, which led to poorly executed SEL programs.

However, today there are a number of schools which have had great success in kicking off a SEL program. This is due to the fact that SEL programs now have a very specific framework embedded in strategic lesson planning and curriculum development.

• Social Awareness: ability to show empathy, understanding another person’s perspectives, and recognizing and mobilizing diverse and available supports.

How can schools begin implementing SEL at their school? According to the article, “How to Implement Social and Emotional Learning at our School,” schools should consider beginning with a series of seven interrelated activities best organized within eight-week planning cycles. In the end, this method would take a few years to fully bring the program to fruition, but at least it is a starting point.

• Relationship Skills: providing clear communication, accurate listening, cooperation, constructive conflict resolution, and becoming a team player and/or leader.

Activities range from first building a school infrastructure that can support SEL to evaluating the school’s culture and climate through surveying, to eventually building a strong team of SEL professionals to teach

• Self-Management: regulating one’s emotions, delaying gratification, managing stress, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward goals.

SEL lessons to students and other teachers.

The key element to effectively introducing an SEL program into a school would be for “there to be harmony across the SEL programs and approaches that a school uses, with SEL as the integrative glue.”

How, specifically, does SEL help students achieve succeed in life? According to the article, “Why Social and Emotional Learning Is Essential for Students,” there are both long- and short-term benefits to having SEL employed in the classroom. A few of the short-term benefits include: • Students begin to know and become able to appropriately manage themselves.

• Students understand the perspectives of others, as well as relating effectively to them.

• Students make wise choices in personal and social decisions.

While these benefits are admirable ones for any student to have, the longterm benefits prove to be even greater.

According to the article, “Effects of Social evelopment Intervention in Childhood 15 ears Later,” students will likely become the socially-conscious citizens that teachers and administrators hope for. Students with greater social and emotional competence ultimately “increase the likelihood of high school graduation, readiness for postsecondary education, career success, positive family and work relationships, better mental health, reduced criminal behavior, and engaged citizenship.”

How to Encourage Open Dialogue

to the next in rapid succession. Parents, too, after a concentrated effort, may also feel the dizzying effects of the constructive ramblings of a child who says exactly what she thinks.

As parents, we listen to the length of each theme, the sentence structure and use of vocabulary, and the tone of voice. aluable information can be learned if our question is broadened to incite a response greater than one word. Kids truly can say incredible things when inspired to focus on direct, meaningful questions. The future day is around the corner when our child holds back her ideas, or he feels too old to worry his parent about his thoughts. These random and open dialogues will help our child feel that no matter how old they are, they can share everything and anything. Let us agree no longer to ask, “How was your day, today?” instead, there are much broader questions. To help begin the dialogue, you can ask this 1. What are you thinking about? This question certainly opens the door and allows your child to talk freely. In moments when a child is sitting in the car or a room alone without the company of the television, this is a great question to discover your child’s concerns or feelings.

2. What was the greatest moment in your day? What a fantastic question for the dinner table! Not only should the youngest at the table answer it, but go around the table, and have everyone contribute. The answer will reveal what everyone in the family values, and, perhaps, spark additional inspirational comments or stories.

3. Who did you sit next to at lunch? School is much more than learning. What better time to talk about school than during a time of social interaction and eating?

Parents can learn about great moments through situational stories and new and old friends. Most importantly, parents can discover if their child was sitting with friends or choosing to be alone. (Sometimes, parents can indirectly learn the reason for receiving a silent lunch, detention, too!

4. How does your belly feel? oung children, especially, need this question once they claim they are full. Often, their mind is focused on dessert and allowing room for something sweeter. Starting an open conversation about feeling full can lead in the direction of defining good foods, how sugar affects the body, and growth is inspired by eating well.

5. What do you like most about your friends? It takes years for a child to see the true value of friendship, and finding the right words to describe the admirable qualities will be challenging. While your daughter or son may enjoy the adventurous friend or the one who always makes the group laugh, they will always value the gift of support, loyalty, honesty, and wisdom.

6. How do you think you influence others? Children often do not see themselves as role models or teachers unless they are mindful of their gifts and talents. How children reflect upon their own strengths as well as weaknesses can be life- changing.

Once he or she sees themselves as leaders, the role may be difficult yet, lead to greater achievements.

Books are an additional way to bring families together and talk openly about conflict, problems, or the dynamics between characters. Conversation can flow much easier if the dialogue focuses on fictitious problems which appear unrelated to a child’s life. Enjoy the time together! No matter the response, it is a wonderful moment to openly share thoughts and feelings.

Store up treasures in heaven. Your heart will be where your treasure is. ~ Matthew 6:20, 21 o you have “Show Tell” at your school? That’s when students bring in a favorite something, and they tell the class all about it. Have you ever brought something to show your classmates? What makes this thing so special to you?

Even if your class doesn’t have Show Tell, I’m sure you have some favorite things.

When you get a new toy, you’re probably excited to show it to your friends. o you have a book you read over and over again or a place you like to visit? The things you love can be called treasures, and a treasure puts a smile on your face and in your heart.

It’s not just things that you care about, of course. People are always more important than things. People are special! There are many people you love and like to spend time with. our parents and grandparents, your brothers or sisters or cousins, your best friend, a nice neighbor each one is a treasure.

God says you are a treasure. God, who made heaven and earth and everything in it, loves you. ou put a smile on His face! God proved how much He loves you when He sent His own son, esus, to wash away your sins and make you clean. This isn’t clean like you just took a bath, but clean from the wrong things you think, do, and say. Clean enough to live in heaven with Him someday.

The things we love won’t last forever, but people last forever. So love each other. Be kind. Pray for your family and friends.

God lasts forever. Love God! Get to know him better by going to church and Sunday school. Read your Bible, or have someone read it to you. Talk to God and listen to what He says. ou don’t have to fold your hands and bow your head, but sometimes that’s good, too. ust talk to Him while you’re cleaning your room, taking a walk, or painting a picture. He’s always right there with you.

Real treasures last forever. Real treasures will be waiting for you in heaven.

When

she was about five years old, my cousin’s daughter took a trip to ellowstone National Park. When she returned from her trip, oey couldn’t wait to tell everyone about the amazing things she saw there. She was especially excited about the adorable, teeny-tiny buffalo she saw at the park. It turns out, the buffalo she saw were actually quite large, as most buffalo are. But, because wild buffalo are only safely viewed from a distance, they looked small to her, so she assumed that they were teeny-tiny. oey’s buffalo story reminds me that to really understand something or someone, we have to get up close. I know that on far too many occasions, I have made judgments about people while standing much too far away to really see them for who they are. I wonder just how many times I’ve assumed something about someone in error, simply because my perspective was skewed. I also wonder how many times people have made assumptions about me because they never got close enough to understand the fullness of who I am.

I know I’ll still get this wrong. ou probably will, too. It’s human nature to judge other people, which is probably why the Bible speaks against it so often. But, maybe we can commit today to make an effort to walk alongside people, getting close enough to truly understand who they are, rather than making assumptions while we stand a safe distance away.

These and many more are the questions I ask myself on Monday, and the devil always tries to make it worse than it is! So please, remember to pray for your pastor...especially on Monday!”

Knowing God

GETTING to know God isn’t as simple as meeting up at the local coffee shop and having a

conversation. Or is it? It’s really not as hard as some want to believe it is. If you own a Bible, He’s just a page away from being the very best friend you’ll ever have.

“But the Bible is old. Aren’t parts of it irrelevant to today’s culture?”

Let’s start with an illustration. Suppose there’s a new novel on the market that you want to read. But by the time you get to the store to buy it, someone went before you and blacked out sentences that they decided aren’t relevant to the story. When you sit down to read it, if you accept the altered pages, you’re going to miss some major plot twists and insightful details! The author of the novel included those sentences for a purpose because they added richness and fullness to the whole story and they enabled the reader to get to know the people in the book. For someone else to decide to alter the writer’s work isn’t just wrong and disrespectful to the writer, it’s a disservice to the reader!

With that said, the Bible is ER relevant today. Literally, every single situation that you could be faced with can be addressed in Scripture. From understanding right from wrong, knowing the wisest course of action, how to pray, how to listen, how to love, how to grow it’s all outlined in that wonderful book.

One of my favorite passages is Isaiah 40:8, which says, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” This message is repeated in ames 1:11, as well as in Psalm 119:89, which reads, “Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.”

When you accept Scripture as the pre-ordained Word of God, everything begins to make sense. It seems obvious to say this, but the secret people sometimes miss is you can’t pick and pull out which parts you want to believe. ou either accept it as it is and enjoy the fullness of the text, or you don’t and feel dissatisfied with unanswered questions. on’t ruin the story with a black Sharpie, deciding what you think should or shouldn’t be included. It’s not up to you to decide. As the ivine Author, it’s God’s Word, and therefore, not up to us decide what stays and what goes.

“How do I read the Bible?”

The first step to reading the Bible is prayer. Prayer for wisdom and understanding can help us get past the intimidation factor. God doesn’t expect us to all be theologians. And remember, God loves to work in unexpected ways. He does this to make sure credit goes where it’s due (to Him . So don’t feel threatened by big words or archaic language.

The second step is choosing a Bible. Personally, I go back and forth between the English Standard ersion (ES , the New Living Translation (NLT , and the King ames ersion (K . ou can access all three of these translations for free on BibleGateway.com, or the free app. Having multiple translations, plus a good commentary, is the best ways to overcome the intimidation factor.

Finally, read daily and don’t rush through it. Savor each word and reflect on what it means. The Bible isn’t meant to be gobbled up it’s meant to be enjoyed. Sporadically reading the Bible is like going to the gym once a month and expecting to get stronger. It’s unrealistic. ou have to read daily in order to grow.

“How does God talk to us?”

As the Creator of the universe and Mastermind of the Bible itself, God is the author of life. He uses His Word to communicate with us. As you read daily, you’ll get to know Him in a deeply personal way.

In Nehemiah 8:12, it says, “And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.” This Scripture is a great illustration of how reading and understanding the word of God gives joy and fulfillment.

And the more time you spend in Scripture, the more you hear His voice. He’s not as elusive as you think. In the last year

alone, I’ve had several issues on my mind, and God has used Scripture to direct me to an answer, give me comfort and peace about situations, and wisdom on how to handle various situations. The more you study, the more you see His hand and recognize His voice.

Getting to know God is attainable. Like any relationship, it requires effort and nurturing. ames 4:8 states, “ raw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

He is present and ready. But He’s waiting on you. One thing that’s very true about God He will not push Himself on someone who pushes Him away. But if you want to know Him, He will show Himself.

first year in ministry as a solo pastor I was so proud to be in ministry. I was eager and energetic and enthusiastic, just out of uke ivinity-feeling very capable and qualified. I felt I understood the balance between sacred organization and non-profit business management thus, I was thrilled to order my very first set of business cards.

My wonderful and gracious husband (with an MBA from Wake Forest and an Undergraduate degree in Business , humbly questioned me when they arrived in the mail: “Love” he said, “Are you sure you want to hand these out?” Again, he questioned me: “ ou chose this design on purpose?” He gently continued, “Were you aware that even your most basic of information, aka your name, is illegible because of the font choice in gold!?”

For my design: I chose pink. Why? Because I often make poor choices based on aesthetics and I truly believe pink is pretty. For print: I chose gold! Why? Because I am human, and again, often make poor choices based on aesthetics also, the gold glistened like the rising sun, and I somehow thought that might make a theological representation of Sunrise UMC, our congregation.

I, having studied church history, theology, education, and ancient biblical languages, very defensively responded: “Well! It looked pretty on the website!”

What a fool am I! God continues to remind me of the grace prevalent in the body of Christ. We are all necessary! We all bring gifts! And quite simply, the body cannot function as it should without the most simple of gifts and the most complex of

Today I had the privilege of leading worship, and I watched a young woman, from our Intellectually and evelopmentally elayed Community (I boldly climb our stage to join the Praise Team in their final song of worship.

She had never rehearsed or practiced but was eager to share her joy in worship celebration on this particular Sunday Celebration. Because she didn’t want to stand alone, her mother stood with her.

Arm over shoulder, each of them sang boldly: “This is Amazing Grace! This is Unfailing Love!” It brought tears to my eyes to see a parent’s love for a child.

It brought tears to my eyes to consider a child’s desire to honor their heavenly Father. It brought tears to my eyes to see two individuals bound together, doing their best to give glory to God. It brought tears to my eyes to recognize, even when we fall short of God’s purpose and plan for our lives, we are still loved, still accepted, still forgiven, and still free to live into the call of Christ on our hearts.

Oklahoma native Kelly Kopp (or Kelly K, as he’s known , the dreams were big. Fame. Money. Music. A chance to be known and remembered.

He found various degrees of success, touring with rock groups such as RE and Nickelback, and was a stage manager for Warped Tour. He hosted a T show in Texas, and tried his hand at a number of entertainment jobs, including a baseball emcee, radio host, stand-up comic, and writer.

And he was very unhappy.

Kelly grew up in a Christian home and had accepted Christ when he was young.

From his earliest days, he felt called to preach and even worked as a youth minister for several years before walking away to try his own thing. But as many prodigals can attest doing your own thing leads to heartache.

“I remember driving in my truck,” shared Kelly. “I felt an overwhelming presence of God whispering to my heart, and He said, I still have a plan for you.’

At that moment, I decided to surrender. I opened up my heart and told God I was giving it to Him I’d tried it my way over and over. My way didn’t work, and I was willing to stop and let Him lead me.”

Kelly shared that from that day forward, his dreams changed.

“I sent out resumes and pictures of myself to over 100 churches,” said Kelly. “I was ready to go back to ministry, but I didn’t get a single call.

I think my tattoos may have scared them.”

Nonetheless, he wasn’t discouraged. An idea had begun to take shape. With the support of his wife and kids behind him, as well as a heartfelt desire to do God’s will, Kelly began to wonder what would happen if he showed love to others a reckless kind of love that would leave them asking, “Why?” Reckless Love Revolution was born. Reckless Love Revolution takes “random acts of kindness” and “pay it forward,” to a new level a esus-level. “Loving others recklessly is loving them when it doesn’t make sense because the love of Christ is and was for everyone,” Kelly stated. “It’s not up to us to decide who qualifies for the abundant love of esus!”

And in a moment that could only be credited to God, Kelly found viral success that catapulted Reckless Love Revolution into a full-fledged ministry and proved the adage, “God doesn’t call the equipped He equips the called.”

Kelly had begun filming his thoughts and posting them on social media. As he was working to get Reckless Love Revolution off the ground, Kelly felt God speak to him again this time, with the message, “Is It a Sin to Get a Tattoo?”

The now-viral video was the door that opened up opportunities for Kelly to preach and share the love of Christ with others. In just over four minutes, Kelly succinctly summed up the question with kindness, compassion, and Biblical truth. Leaving the viewer with much to consider, Kelly encourages those who watch it to pray about it and remember that we are to love everyone. He closes

“When my resume didn’t open up doors,” said Kelly, “that video did! Where the world said No,’ God used it to open up opportunities for me to speak!”

Indeed, in addition to Kelly’s weekly videos on social media, Kelly is a regular speaker at churches across the country and is not only preaching at the Kingdom outh Conference (coming to Greensboro, October 6th-7th! , he is also emceeing the event as it travels around the country.

Kelly is living proof God knows our dreams. And when we surrender our will to His plan He often surprises us. Either He provides dreams that are brand new, that we would have never considered. Or, He aligns our dreams with His plans for something so much better. So, Kelly’s dream for fame? He’s on his way. BY MEGAN TAYLOR Ardmore Baptist Church has been a staple in Winston-Salem since its founding in 1927. People of all ages attend the church and participate in its many programs and groups. The programs and groups include a preschool, a “ oung at Heart” club for older adults, choirs, youth and college groups, and Bible studies for adults. The “Singles Group” at Ardmore is one of the adult Bible studies that brings together singles from various walks of life to study the word of God. “This is a group of men and women who enjoy conversation about themes in the Bible, as well as simple fellowship. We like to get together for meals, and board games are often on tap,” said Kathy Wilheit, leader of the Singles Group.

The group includes people in their twenties and thirties.

Every Tuesday evening, they meet from 6:00–7:15 pm at Twin City Hive for Bible study. uring this time, Wilheit states, they begin with grabbing coffee or desserts and catching up with each other. Then, the Singles Group moves into their Bible study.

“In September, we are going to start a new series called ANIMATE: Practices.’ This Bible study includes seven lessons about the central practices of the Christian faith, including prayer, food, worship, sacraments, money, service, and community,” Wilheit explained.

In this study, group members will watch videos from Christian leaders, answer questions, journal, and share ideas on how they can put the lesson information to use in their lives. “Not all participants regularly attend Ardmore. All people have to do is just show up! The door is always open to anyone.

However, I might shut the door when we’re getting a little rowdy, for the sake of the other customers,” joked Wilheit.

According to Wilheit, the mission of the Singles Group is to fellowship and learn how God works in our lives. The group is just one of the many ways Ardmore Baptist Church spreads God’s love in the community since its founding. The church was originally called “Tabernacle Baptist Church” until 1938.

When built, Ardmore Baptist stood in the then West End section of town. At that time, there was no Baptist church in the area. Many members attended Brown Memorial Church.

However, after a difference of opinion occurred within the church, many members left and the assistant minister, P.C. ames, resigned. Soon after, ames began serving as minister of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Later, the church would be called Ardmore Baptist. The name referred to the area of West End where the church was located, and it also was named after a planning consultant in 1916 from Ardmore, Pennsylvania.

The church has four core values that lead its congregation.

These values state that it is “Christ-centered, biblically grounded, relationally guided, and ministry-driven.” Together, the four values are used to connect people with Christ. The values are also seen in the church’s programs and groups.

It’s a GRAND Life Life’s A Beach!

for the heat, I love summer. It’s that relaxing time of year when things take a break – at least for a little while. Kids are out of school, the pools are open and families get to spend more time together without the extra after-school activities. It is also when most of us take a vacation. Whether it is a trip to a special resort, an overseas excursion, a trip to the beach or simply a visit to Grandma’s house, a lot of planning goes into leaving home no matter for how long it may be.

My three daughters and I started looking for a beach house last fall. It is unbelievable how fast they go. We needed room for eight adults and six children, with only two weeks that worked with everyone’s schedule. We wanted a house that was ocean front with king-sized beds, bunk beds, lots of bathrooms, well-appointed and a pool, all at a reasonable price – not too picky, are we? We searched through lots of beaches and houses. There was a lot of back and forth before a decision was made. Once the place was secured, we just waited for the months to pass and our week to begin.

Every year, we take our family to a resort in the mountains, and every other year, we take everyone to isney World.

The difference in these family trips and the beach trip is that in the mountains we each have our own cabin and at our isney World resort, each family has its own room.

In both cases, we all do our own thing only all coming together at dinner. Were we going to survive a week of so much closeness?

In a word, yes! Any time I can spend with my precious grands is wonderful – having all of them under one roof for a week is pure heaven. It was great watching our girls and their families interact and love being together. Our days were spent jumping waves, building sand castles, walking the beach and searching for shark’s teeth – our youngest son-in-law showed the kids what to look for and was the champion of finding them. Our proficient water sport son-in-law patiently taught our nine-year-old granddaughter how to surf – she is a natural. A couple of nights, we went on a sand crab hunt.

Our other son-in-law bought the kids flashlights and nets to make spotting and catching them easier. After they had

deposited a number of them in a small pail, it was time to set them free. There were gales of laughter as we jumped out of the way to avoid them scurrying over our toes.

When we took a break from the sun and sand, it was the time I really got to see and hear all about my adorable loves.

Our eldest granddaughter got to tell me all about her two weeks at camp, baked us a delicious pie, learned a new card game and proceeded to beat me at it, adopted a turtle (in name only from the rescue and rehab center, entertained her brothers and cousins, and told me numerous things I might not have known if it hadn’t been for having this uninterrupted time together. Our eldest grandson regaled me with tales of the sports camps he had been to, his friends, everything Star Wars and his amazing building talent with Legos. He also gifted me with some finds from the beach which I will treasure. Our four-year-old granddaughter loved to snuggle and ask lots of questions which usually ended up in a fit of laughter. She is a pro with Legos, loves all the My Little Ponies and draws and colors beautifully. She also helped me bake cookies – my little sous chef. The youngest boys were busy racing cars, putting tracks together, playing hard and sleeping well. Our youngest granddaughter was busy taking her first steps and gaining more confidence in that endeavor every day. She loved trying to keep up with her cousins, and they were very good with her.

Would I have learned and experienced all of this at some other time? Maybe but being there for the “firsts” – the spontaneous interaction, the day-to-day new experiences – will always be cherished memories. The week culminated in a celebration of my birthday. I was overly spoiled, but the greatest gift of all was the week spent with my family. And my birthday wish? Why, hoping this becomes an annual event, of course!

Life on the Line

Frank McNair,

a native North Carolinian, knows about football. He loves the game. The football team of his youth was the Laurinburg Fighting Scots, the same as that of his characters. “I had a 72-hour career as a football player for the University of North Carolina,” Frank shared. “I was invited to walk on on Sunday and left on Wednesday. I know when to walk away.”

Frank did continue to enjoy playing football while in college, and with other club football teams well into his twenties.

After graduating from UNC, Frank worked for a time in the banking industry. He earned his MBA at Wake Forest and worked for a number of years in corporate America. He and his wife have worked together in their consulting business for the past 30 years. He has written two non-fiction books, and Life on the Line–Football, Rage and Redemption is his debut novel, a ten-year labor of love.

Frank and his wife live in Forsyth County, along with their beloved rescue dog, Buddy Brown.

He is a member of Winston-Salem Writers and active in the community. He is working on his next book, titled A Creeping Certainty, so be on the look for news on his website.

About Life on the Line Knowledge of the intricacies of football is not a requirement for reading Life on the Line. The novel is the coming-of-age story of two boys who play football for the Fighting Scots. Both are eighth graders, although Bart is a few years older than Franklin, having been held back a few times. Their dislike of each other is as intense as their raging hormones. Their home lives are polar opposites. Bart lives with his often-absent minister dad, stepmom, and handicapped little sister.

His stepmom, oris, abused him in his younger years, but now that he’s older, resorts to screaming and belittling him. Franklin, on the other hand, has a banker dad and a mom who is perhaps a tad too protective. The fact that his mom, Betsy, lets him play football is remarkable. Neither oris nor Betsy knows how to deal with the shifting personalities of these two boys in their growing-to-manhood dilemma.

Thankfully, they have the game of football in which to unleash their emotions. As the season progresses, they find a grudging respect for their respective abilities on the field. However, that respect does not translate well to life off the field. The dramatic confrontation is swift, surprising, and rattles and shocks them and those around them. The outcome illustrates well that stage between boy and man.

A

few years ago, my daughter was struggling in math. We knew she could eventually grasp the concepts, but she was getting easily frustrated, and her grades were showing it. She also had an amazing teacher who believed in her and patiently worked with her every step of the way. When it came time for a big test, we were nervous about how she’d fare. Luckily, the test was not timed, and the teacher gave my daughter as much time as she needed. She was the last one to finish, but the teacher would not let her give up until she found an answer to every problem. My daughter happened to score great on her test, but I was worried about her future performance.

It turns out, the teacher taught my daughter more than just math concepts that year. She taught her grit, which has now been translated to confidence. Math is no longer something my daughter fears. It’s not her favorite subject, but she knows if she sticks with it, she will prevail.

Since then, I’ve heard a lot about the importance of grit. Grit is the ability to work hard, and with passion (and often in uncomfortable situations to eventually reach the end result with success.

Recently at my children’s school, parents

were shown a short clip about grit that featured psychologist Angela Lee uckworth. She has been studying grit and how it determines both academic and professional success. As a former school teacher, uckworth noticed that IQ was not the only difference between her best and worst students. Her studies revealed that success is not dependent on learning quickly or easily, but on the ability to persevere.

Grit is such a basic and raw quality, but not everyone gets it or has it or praises it. Sure, we all want our kids to succeed. Of course, we want them to score high grades and/or excel in whatever activity they choose. But when the going gets rough, sometimes we give in and choose a different course.

For example, if our child signs up for a sport and decides halfway through the season that he doesn’t like it, there are those of us who would let him quit (even if we’ve paid for the whole season! . Or if our child happens to get a teacher, class or coach she doesn’t like, there are those of us who might try and switch her to a different room, school or team.

Life isn’t always fair and can present us with tough situations. But if we keep

swooping in to shelter our kids from these situations instead of letting them work through it we are not doing our kids any favors later in life.

I’ll be the first to admit I am not always the grittiest parent. But I am a firm believer in uckworth’s theory that grit is a key ingredient to success. Of course, someone who is extremely gritty may still experience failure, and that is OK, too.

But I have to believe that whenever you add grit to skill, talent, and/or IQ, your chances for success have to be greater.

I’m pretty sure my kids will not grow up to be the next Steve obs or Oprah Winfrey! But I certainly hope they will grow up with the same determined work ethic. And as much as I will hate to see it, I hope they experience failure sooner than later, so they can learn how to pick themselves up, start over, and work that much harder. All of that builds grit.

I love this quote from Angela Lee uckworth, “Grit is like living life as a marathon, not as a sprint.” It’s a great metaphor to support her theory that success is not dependent on learning quickly or easily, but on the ability to persevere.

When

you think about pirates, do you see them as renegades roaming the oceans in search of unsuspecting prey? o you romanticize them as swashbucklers who lived their lives on their own terms, like an anti-hero of Captain ack Sparrow fame?

WHAT WAS THE ORDER OF RANKING ABOARD A PIRATE SHIP?

Pirates, according to research, did have codes they lived by, with their own version of democracy. Most captains had a pirate code or “Articles of Agreement” that all members of the crew were expected to sign and adhere to in their daily work and life aboard ship. The crew members would typically sign their names or make their mark and swear an oath of allegiance and honor. For those crew members forced into becoming part of the crew, sign or die were the likely options. The articles of agreement would usually be posted in a visible spot somewhere on the ship as a reminder of what was expected. Only four of these Articles of Agreement have ever been found, according to historians, as these documents were usually either burned or thrown overboard to avoid having them fall into the hands of authorities.

• The captain was the top rank and leader of the ship or fleet.

This was not a popularity choice the captain was selected by the crew members based on skill and respect. Obviously, they also had to be skilled in combat and able to command/ navigate a ship.

WHAT SORTS OF THINGS WERE INCLUDED IN THESE “ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT”?

• How the shares of plunder would be divided was determined by rank. For example, the captain and quartermaster got two shares of the plunder the master, boatswain, and gunner got 1½ share and the other officers got 1 share.

• The way an injured crewmember would be paid.

• How and under what condition a crew member would be punished if disobedient to commands.

• Notice that each crew member was entitled to fresh provisions whenever they became available.

• Notice that gambling for money was not allowed aboard ship.

• Notice that lights were to be put out at 8:00 pm. If a crew member was awake, he had to be on deck.

• Notice that weapons had to be kept clean and at the ready.

• Notice that desertion of the ship or during a battle was punishable by death or by being marooned in dire circumstances (with a weapon, a specific amount of powder, and a small supply of water .

• Notice that fighting was not allowed among the crew on board ship. Fighting was done on shore in a manner similar to a duel, with the winner defined as the one who drew first blood.

There was a hierarchy of rank aboard a pirate ship, just as on any other naval vessel.

• The quartermaster was second in command under the captain. If the captain was absent, the quartermaster took the helm. He was generally in charge of the food and water provisions.

• The master rank was generally a navigation or pilot position.

These positions required some level of education and were usually well paid. Ironically, these positions were likely to be filled by forced labor.

• Gunners were small teams of crew members who manned the artillery.

• The boatswain supervised the day-to-day activities of life aboard ship.

Pirates had their own version of guidelines or democracy.

So, for those who sought the pirate life as a means of doing whatever they pleased, there was a rude awakening in store. How else could pirates of by-gone days have been as successful as they were in their heyday without some sense of order and duty?

MEXICAN RICE

MEXICAN STREET CORN SALAD

EASY TACO BAKE INGREDIENTS: 1½ lbs. lean ground beef (or ground turkey)

INGREDIENTS: 10 ears corn

14.5-oz. can diced tomatoes with green chilies

3 Tbsp. fresh cilantro, chopped

½ cup water

2 Tbsp. fresh lime juice

1 cup sour cream

½ cup mayonnaise

1 pkg. taco seasoning

1 tsp. chili powder

8-12 oz. Colby Jack cheese, shredded Corn tortilla chips DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. In a medium skillet, over medium heat, brown ground beef and drain fat.

3. Add the tomatoes, water, sour cream and taco seasoning.

4. Simmer for 5–10 minutes.

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups white rice, instant 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. sea salt 2 Tbsp. cilantro

DIRECTIONS: 1. Shuck the corn. (Let the kids help!) Boil the corn 3–4 minutes or grill the corn. (Note: grilling takes longer.) Let cool. (Run under cold water to help them cool faster!)

2. Cut the corn kernels off the cob and stir in cilantro.

3. In a separate bowl, stir mayo, lime juice and chili powder together.

4. Combine the corn mixture and mayo mixture.

1 tsp. garlic powder 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup tomato sauce DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large sauce pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add cumin, salt and garlic powder, stirring constantly for one minute.

2. Add tomato sauce and broth. Turn heat up to medium high and bring to a boil.

3. Add rice and return to a boil, then cover and turn off heat. Let it sit while rice absorbs tomato sauce and broth, about 5 min. Fluff with fork. If rice seems wet, return to stove and cook over medium heat a few more minutes, stirring constantly until liquid is absorbed by rice.

5. Grease a 9 x13 baking pan and line with tortilla chips.

6. Cover chip layer with some of the ground beef mixture, then a layer of cheese.

7. Repeat these layers until the final layer is cheese.

8. Bake 20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.

The Heart of a Servant and Love for the Titans

There

are very few constants in this life. Things change, and people move on, but for the students at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, NC, for over 20 years Patrick Murphy, also known as “Coach Murphy,” has been a constant at sporting events and football practices, giving of his time on and off the field to the team he loves and the people who love him.

Patrick Murphy’s love of West Forsyth actually began when neighbor Dave McConnell, now retired, but in the 1990s, a teacher and head football coach at Reynolds High School, became Pat’s friend. Coach McConnell had been a PE teacher and assistant coach at West Forsyth and moved away, and then back, to teach and coach at Reynolds. As Coach McConnell recalls, “After Reynolds lost a game one night, Pat was at the game, and I gave him a ride home. I was disappointed with the loss, but Pat was already looking forward to next year, asking, ‘who do we open up with next season?’ encouraging me by saying, ‘They’re going down.’ No matter how bad your problem is, Pat will make you feel good.” When Coach McConnell returned to West Forsyth to finish out his teaching and coaching career, Pat became a regular at the school, attending sporting events and football practices. In the depths of Coach Murphy’s heart, he always believes that no matter the sport, West will prevail in the end. Pat’s attitude is very special, considering he has overcome so much, after being stricken with a mental disability at birth. Now at age 58, or “5-8,” as Coach Murphy likes to say, he continues to support the school that has adopted him as one of their own, assisting head football coach, Adrian Snow. No one really recalls when Pat became “Coach Murphy,” but it’s a title and role that fits him well.

A COACH LIKE NO OTHER One of the definitions of the word “coach” is: “a private teacher who gives someone lessons in a particular subject or sport; being of support and encouragement.” Ask anyone at West Forsyth High School, and they will tell you that Coach Murphy is in every sense a “coach,” having taught students and staff many lessons over the years. Jim Coghill, Licensed Athletic Trainer and substitute teacher at West Forsyth said, “Patrick Murphy is one of those rare people you meet in life who makes a difference in the lives of everyone he meets. Pat lives with his father, Joe, near West, and is here on campus every day during the school year at 2 pm sharp, to help Coach Adrian Snow with practice. Pat helps in any way he can, by getting coolers, water and any supplies needed. Pat also comes to soccer games and basketball games, with his father many times dropping him off, and I take him back home,” commented Mr. Coghill. When the school year winds to an end, Coach Murphy is an assistant baseball and spring football coach, then summer brings Legion Baseball and once that ends, football starts again. At West Forsyth, there’s not a time of year that Coach Murphy isn’t on campus, and that’s fine with Coach Snow, the players, and especially with Coach Murphy. But Pat’s heart for serving and helping doesn’t end with the school.

“When I go to Sam’s Club, Pat will often come with me, and we will have lunch and maybe a frozen yogurt. He never forgets anything like names or how to get anywhere. When I take him home at the end of our errands, he always thanks me. Pat has always been so kind to everyone and a positive influence on the students and the staff. I can’t imagine West Forsyth without Coach Murphy.

I can’t think of anyone that doesn’t love Coach Murphy, and we are very fortunate that he is part of our school,” Mr. Coghill reiterated.

Kernersville Triad Park:

A Staple in the Kernersville Community

every city, parks are located throughout for residents to gather, enjoy time with others, and make memories at public and private events.

Parks can add many advantages to a community. These outdoor spaces host a variety of events and activities for people.

Many have playgrounds, walking and bike trails, and picnic shelters. Other parks include amphitheaters for shows and concerts, pools, golf courses, recreation centers, and sports fields. In addition, these spaces are known to be used for city festivals, weddings, picnics, family reunions, fundraisers, and more—all of which bring people together. Another advantage to parks in the community is the programs and classes. For example, some parks and recreation centers offer swim lessons, health, fitness, and developmental classes, sports programs, safety classes, environmental preservations, youth opportunities, and more. All of these experiences are geared towards helping citizens of all ages learn new skills and enrich their lives. Lastly, parks bring economic and tourist benefits to an area. Through the entertainment events, sports, games, and nearby attractions, a park can be a financial plus for a city.

All of these advantages are available to citizens here in the Triad through our various parks, including Triad Park in Kernersville. Nestled in the heart of the city, Triad Park was created from a partnership between Forsyth and Guilford Counties. The idea for a park between Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point was first thought of in 1966.

However, the concept wasn’t made a reality until 1994, when a master plan was

approved by the Forsyth and Guilford County Commissioners. Today, Triad Park is home to an amphitheater, volleyball courts, soccer and softball fields, playgrounds, walking and hiking trails, a fishing pond, picnic and gazebo shelters, and an indoor banquet facility, Woodland Hall. The amphitheater can hold up to 3,000 people, where concerts, festivals, theatrical performances, competitions, and events are held. Seating is available in front of the stage, along with grass seating. As for Woodland Hall, it is a 5,000 square-foot banquet hall that can accommodate up to 300 people. In addition, the hall has a gazebo and back lawn for extra spacing. The Woodland Hall can be rented for events.

Another unique aspect to Triad Park is the Carolina Field of Honor. The memorial was created by The War Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises funds to preserve the history of veterans. According to their website, the Carolina Field of Honor’s mission is “to honor the service of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and to educate families and children who live in freedom.” The monuments portray the sacrifices made defending our country. Included in the memorial is a 57-foot obelisk, flags representing the United States, North Carolina, POWs and the various branches of service, five large monuments representing the five branches of the military, and a 2-tier water feature. Also, included are The Meandering Walkway, The Remembrance Walkway, and The Historical Flag Walk.

Within The Remembrance Walkway, personalized bricks with veterans’ names and service information are on display.

Citizens can donate to the Carolina Field of Honor and buy a brick to honor their loved one. Lastly, the memorial has a Parade Deck with a ceremonial platform for veterans and other patriotic organizations within Forsyth and Guilford Counties to use for special events and community achievements. The Carolina Field of Honor is handicap-accessible and has a walking trail. To find out more and learn how you can donate, visit NCWMF. org/CarolinaFieldofHonor.

Mark your calendars for two upcoming events at Triad Park. The 13th-annual Shmedfest is on Saturday, August 26th, from 4 pm to 10 pm, and benefits Crisis Control Ministry. This event is a community fundraiser and will feature bands, including Brother Brother, The Junction Trio, Downtown Band, and The Winmars. Food is provided by K&W Catering, Dewey’s, Pepsi, and R.H. Barringer Distributing Company. The event is free, but donations to Crisis Control Ministry are encouraged.

Also at Triad Park is the Heartstrings 13thannual Walk for Remembrance & Hope on Saturday, October 14th. The event begins at 9 am and raises funds and awareness for pregnancy and infant loss.

Also, the funds will be used to support Heartstrings’ grief-support programs for families in need. Early registration is open until September 22nd.

People of all ages come to Triad Park and enjoy its amenities every day. Take the time to stop by and create memories at a long-lasting attraction in the Triad.

If

you are bored of all of your usual hang-out spots or worried that you will have nothing to do on the weekends once school starts again, here are a few locations and activities in Winston-Salem that you may not have experienced yet.

Pedal Boating Mallard Lake at Tanglewood Park offers pedal boating during the summer. Make sure to check the website for weekday options, but the boats are available for rent every weekend in August, from 7 am to 5 pm. The cost is $4 for half an hour. I usually bring a friend or sibling and a packed lunch. The banks are always crowded with geese, and there is a small pier to walk down and put your feet in the water.

Yadkin The Yadkin River is quite long and has very little beach. The best way to enjoy the river is to bring tubes, kayaks, or a small boat and drift down with the current. When I visited the river with friends, we parked one car at a bottom entrance and drove up the river with tubes and a shallow boat. The trip took four hours, mainly because we were drifting rather than using paddles. Once we had reached the bottom entrance, we were able to drive up to collect the other car. I would suggest bringing lots of snacks.

Dan There are many ways to enjoy the Dan River. However, simply wading through the water and enjoying the sights is how I experienced it. If you reach an area deep enough, you can jump off rocks into the water or climb steep slopes to admire the view from 40 feet up. Water shoes or Chacos may come in handy, as the river floor is covered in slippery rocks. $2.50 Theater Marketplace Cinemas in Winston-Salem (aka “The $2.50 Movie Theater”) sells tickets for movies fresh out of the theater for only $2.50. This is a great way to enjoy movies in a theater environment without having to pay10 or 15 bucks.

Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock, Stone Mountain All of these parks provide wonderful hiking opportunities.

Even if you are not the hiking type, just driving to the top of Pilot Mountain with a picnic and ENO to enjoy the spectacular view is entertainment enough. Hiking one of the many scenic trails would be the best way to enjoy a Saturday.

Swing dancing The Vintage Theater offers swing dancing with a live band every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm. There is an $8 admission fee with a free lesson starting at 7:30. The dancer demographic ranges from 13 up and the age group that attends most often are in their mid to late teens.

Store Games If you are bored one afternoon, maybe with some cousins in town or a few friends over, here are a couple of games that may liven up the day. The first is the “$5 Thrift Shop Search.”

Each participant is given a five-dollar bill and is ushered into the nearest thrift shop. At the end of five minutes whoever has managed to purchase the most useful, odd, or valuable item is the winner and gets to keep all of the items purchased.

The second game is the “Grossest Thing in the Grocery Store Game.” Once again, the price limit is $5. Each person enters a run-of-the-mill grocery store and whoever manages to find the grossest thing (by popular vote) is the winner. All of the losers have to taste-test the winner’s nasty discovery.

Coffee Shop Hop This activity is like a bar hop but with coffee shops.

Throughout the day, you must travel to the designated coffee shops, stopping to chat with the barista or read a book in the courtyard at each stop, after buying a unique drink. Feel free to let people know you are on a Coffee Shop Hop; they just might want to join you! Lord, for carrying me along this journey thus far. I most certainly could not have done it without you and your many faithful to help me along the way. My hope for sharing this each month has been to help others that may be traversing the same path, or know someone who is. I had no idea just how close to home that would hit, as my dear friend and daughter’s mother-in-law, Sandy, was just diagnosed with breast cancer, as well. She has a different type of cancer than mine, and her path is already not the same, but everyone’s journey is unique to them and depends on many factors. Mine is just one path and how I’ve felt, but I look forward to being a support for her in the coming months, as she has been to me.

So many survivors have offered stories of encouragement and hope, and I thank each and every one of you!

One of my latest encounters happened one Sunday morning as I made a quick run to Lowe’s Home Improvement to pick up something I needed for church. I recall walking in from the parking lot, and for some reason, thoughts of reconstruction were swirling in my head. Dreading it and wondering, did I really want to put myself through that? I honestly had not thought much about it outside of my initial appointment with the plastic surgeon, because I find that focusing on what I’m going through at the time is the best way to handle it. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you think of everything you will go through all at once. So in hindsight, it was weird to me that it even popped in my head, but God had a plan. I grab my item and get in line with a cashier, instead of my usual self-check-out—more divine intervention. Donna asks if I’m a survivor. I reply, I hope so, and explain I’m still going through treatment. She tells me she is a survivor, too, and then she asks if I’m having reconstruction. Tears well up in my eyes because I know she is just one more of God’s many angels put in my path. She tells me I need to do it and it will be fine. Thank you, Donna!

SURPRISE OF MY LIFE! On a scorchingly hot July day, I got the surprise of my life. My daughter and I had been delivering the August issues all day, and I was oblivious to the nervousness she seemed to have about my “Just one more stop” plea multiple times. I was also oblivious to my friend’s cancellation of a birthday dinner earlier that day for that night, and so I was in no hurry to get home. Little did I know they were in on it, too!

So we finally get home, and I’m in the driveway cleaning out my car from the day’s work, and I hear sirens. My daughter reappears out of nowhere, and I mention how they seem to be getting closer. They are finally so loud, I start walking up my driveway and notice a sheriff’s patrol car pulling into my neighbor’s driveway. I’m immediately distraught, thinking something is wrong with them, and my daughter is like, “Mom, look at the fire trucks!” I turn my eyes up the road and cannot believe the sight! “For me?” I say.

Two beautiful pink fire trucks with some very handsome firemen and a line of friends coming to greet me. To say I was surprised was an understatement!

PINK HEALS This was all part of the Pink Heals organization. Many thanks to Lana Scholtfeldt & Dana Bryson of the Village Inn Hotel & Event Center, and Keela Johnson for bringing about such an amazing surprise! According to the Pink Heals website, it is a program that partners with Public Safety, local businesses, and families to bring a community together. It is a program that provides home visits to show individuals that they are loved, cherished and important to others. Pink Heals brings back the human element by celebrating people, not causes. I certainly felt very loved and celebrated that day! Stay tuned for an article on the Pink Heals organization in the October issue of Forsyth Family magazine and a special Forsyth Woman Girls’ Night Out Pink Heals fundraiser in October, as well.

I reached another milestone and finished radiation on August 10th and left for vacation the very next day.

Ringing that bell was a great feeling! God is good! I remain GrateFull and HopeFull!

Gliding Through Your Workout: My Favorite New Workout Toy

BY MADISON SKAKLE I have a new obsession, and for once it’s not chocolate, chocolate chip cookies or ice cream. It’s GLIDERS. These gliders have been making a major appearance in my workouts lately, because I cannot get over how effective and fun they can be!

• What are Gliders? Gliders are thin discs shaped like paper plates. You can use them to “glide” during a movement. Gliders are the perfect budget-friendly and portable workout tool that enables you to get a full-body workout at home. You use little space and little impact! If you don’t want to invest in gliders, you can use a pair of paper towels, hand towels or paper plates on hardwood floors.

• What are the benefits of Gliders? Gliders are great for your core. If you’ve mastered sit-ups and crunches, it’s time for you to try gliders. Many core gliding exercises start in a plank position, so you will work your entire core from front to back, and your shoulders.

• Gliders can improve your stability. When using gliders, it takes a lot of balance and core strength to stay on your feet. Most of the muscles in your legs and core have to work together to keep you from falling.

• Gliding exercises are non-impact. All the exercises with gliders are low-impact and don’t involve you slamming your feet or hands on the ground. If you suffer from any sort of aches and pains, these are effective to help you train.

Here is an example of a 15-Minute Glider Workout. You can do this one time through for 15 minutes or do a couple more rounds for a longer workout. Make sure you warm up beforehand and stretch afterward!

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS: Start with 1 minute of mountain climbers. You will have the gliders on your toes in a plank position with heels lifted. Keep your upper body still and slowly bring your knees in and back in a mountainclimbing motion. Make sure your core is engaged, and your wrists stay under your shoulders.

BRIDGE SWEEPS: Next, let’s give our wrists a break and move into bride sweeps. Lie on your back and place the gliders under your heels.

Bring your hips up toward the ceiling and then alternate extending one leg out and in. Each time make sure to bring your heel back under your glutes. Keep your hips high the entire time. You should feel this in your glutes and hamstrings. Do this exercise for 1 minute.

LUNGES: Come up to standing and place the glider on your back toe. Bring your back leg into a standing position and back out to a deep lunge; go slow and keep the movement controlled. Make sure to keep your abs engaged, relax the shoulders and don’t lean forward. Do one leg for 30 seconds and then switch to the other leg.

PLANK TO PIKE: This one is a doozy, but it’s so fun! Come down to a plank position and place the gliders under your feet, keep your heels lifted. From your plank position, lift your hips up to the ceiling to form a pike position and then back out into a plank. Make sure not to arch your back and keep your shoulders over your wrists the entire time. Do this movement slowly for 1 minute.

RUNNERS LUNGE: From your plank position, keep the gliders under your feet and glide your right foot forward to the outside of your right wrist, back to a plank position and then glide your left foot forward to the outside of your left wrist. The key here is to keep your hips down and core engaged. Complete runners lunge for 1 minute.

After you’re done with those five exercises, do them two more times for a total of 3 rounds. Trust me, your core will be feeling the burn, and you’ll be smiling through your sweat!

CORBETT Midtown Cafe & Dessertery is truly a staple in Winston-Salem, and a great deal of its success stems from the owners’ desire to continually add to and improve the customer experience with menu items, as well as catering and grab-and-go options. No matter what your needs are, Midtown has an answer that will leave you, your family and your guests coming back for more!

The latest in Midtown’s endeavor always to stay ahead of customers’ wants and needs are the changes to its fabulous catering menu that will appeal to all customers! “We have lowered our prices per meal to meet more company budgets and added more breakfast options (such as our quiche and breakfast casserole),” said Manager Brette Hearn.

Some companies may prefer to grab-and-go, so that option is available, as well. “Platters and hot orders from the market require a 24-hour minimum notice,” said Hearn. “Orders can be placed via e-mail or phone call. Many of our items are available from the fridge or freezer in the Midtown Market for daily grab-and-go convenience. We have added breakfast casserole to our freezer options (can be picked up hot upon request), new platters and quickbite desserts to serve larger groups and different events.”

For a smaller affair or simply a home-cooked family dinner around the table, the Midtown Market has something for everyone and every taste. “We have grab-and-go fridge entrees such as chicken pie, lasagna, pulled pork and meatloaf, as well as sides like mac and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes, apples and seasonal selections,” said Hearn. “Soups and cold salads (like our pesto pasta salad, pimento cheese and tarragon chicken salad) are also readily available. Freezer items include quiche, butternut squash lasagna, chicken pies and a variety of side items. Desserts, house potato chips, granola and candied pecans are always available, as well.”

Special orders can be made via phone, fax, e-mail or online from the website and must be received 24 hours in advance. Need it delivered? No problem!

“There is a $150 minimum required for delivery,” said Hearn. “Monday through Friday deliveries are available; some weekend delivery is available with request from the catering manager.”

In addition to the consistent Midtown Market menu of chicken pies and lasagna, there is a featured weekly special that includes an entrée with two sides at a discounted price. Quiche and soup flavors also rotate to keep customers coming back for all the different, delicious flavors! The Moravianstyle chicken pies and quiche are easily the top sellers at the Midtown Market, according to Brette.

work is inspirational to me because she uses her voice to change the stigma surrounding body size in popular media. In her book, she combines a deep understanding of yoga with a willingness to share her personal struggles in a way that touches everyone, including myself. She’s a champion of the body-positivity movement and works to enforce the idea that it’s all right to love yourself.

How Literature Fosters Positive Role Models

What

if you had the ability to impact someone’s life dramatically, would you do it? Some of my fondest memories as a child involved the characters I surrounded myself with.

Unlike a majority of my peers, I did not fit a societal mold. I was the weird kid, too big for her own skin and impressionable to a fault, who preferred sitting in the grass with her books to being the perpetual “it” during recess tag. By third grade, my elementary school librarian put a visitation limit on me because I was reading too fast for the school to keep up with. To me, there was, and still is, nothing better than being sucked into some fantastical world where reality is but a dream. Characters like Molly McIntire, Junie B. Jones, and Hermione Granger took me on magical adventures and taught me that my differences make me who I am.

These experiences made me realize just how important literature is for children and young adults. Reading does more than just improve academic and oratory skills. Books provide positive role models to those who might not otherwise have them. The world we live in is not particularly friendly, which is why it’s so important for authors, booksellers, and festival creators to promote inclusivity of all kinds.

One of my personal role models is author Jessamyn Stanley. Stanley is an internationally recognized yoga instructor, and an award-winning Instagram star most widely known for breaking the stereotypes associated with fitness. Her book, Every Body Yoga, is part memoir, part instruction manual for beginners of all shapes and sizes to start their journey into rediscovering themselves through yoga and spiritual awakening. I am overjoyed that I will have the opportunity to meet Jessamyn Stanley at this year’s Bookmarks Festival. There are two opportunities to meet her: First, on Friday, September at 8 a.m., Stanley will lead a sunrise yoga session. Tickets to this wonderful event are $12 and include admission to the yoga session, as well as a copy of Every Body Yoga. Second, on Saturday, September 9th, at 2:45 p.m. in the Calvary Moravian Sanctuary, there will be a free event where she will talk about her new book, take questions, and sign autographs.

Stanley is just one of the over 45 authors who will attend the Bookmarks Festival, many of whom promote diversity and create positive role models in literature. Some such authors include Leigh Bardugo and Sarah McCoy, both young adult authors. Leigh Bardugo is the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom, and the Grisha Trilogy. Her newest book, Wonder Woman: Warbringer, is a coming-of-age story about the world’s greatest superheroine; it promotes independence, friendship and sisterhood. Sarah McCoy is the bestselling historical fiction author of The Baker’s Daughter and The Branch of Hazel. Her newest book, The Mapmaker’s Children, follows Sarah Brown, the daughter of abolitionist John Brown, who, realizing that her artistic talents could help save lives, helps her become one of the Underground Railroad’s leading mapmakers.

Soft and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

BY SARA WILES Everyone needs a go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe. Whether it’s one that has been in your family for years or one you happened to tear out of a magazine, there is something effortless and classic about an old-fashioned and well-made cookie. This recipe is incredibly simple and will yield 12 soft and chewy cookies. I particularly love to double the recipe, but refrain from cooking right away. Simply omit steps 6 and 7 and instead, pop the cookie sheet in the freezer for at least 1 hour. I prefer to store the dough in a gallon Ziploc bag and prepare them on an as-needed basis. They make great gifts that can be prepared with ease, or can satisfy that late-night sweet tooth. Whatever you do, it is guaranteed that every hand won’t be able to stay out of your cookie jar.

INGREDIENTS: 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature ½ cup white granulated sugar ¼ cup packed, light brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg, at room temperature 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. With an electric mixer, beat butter and both sugars together until fluffy. Add vanilla and egg and beat for 10 to 15 seconds until just incorporated.

3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to mixer and beat on “low” until mixture forms into crumbles.

4. With your hands, finish mixing batter crumbles into a dough-like consistency. Add chocolate chips and incorporate with hands.

5. Scoop dough onto a prepared baking sheet, leaving at least 1 inch between cookies.

6. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes until the outside edges are brown and the center is golden.

7. Allow cookies to rest on baking sheet for at least 30 minutes before removing and cooling on wire rack.
