Pumpkin Picking Hayrides Are Back!

Fall is in the air.

It is such a great time of year to get outside and enjoy all that fall has to offer.

There are so many great things to do during the fall season, but nothing can get you into the fall spirit more than hayrides and pumpkin patches. This October at Tanglewood Stables, you will have the chance to do both. With their pumpkin picking hayrides, you can have a fun fall time experience and make some great memories, too.

Tanglewood Park is a place of such rich history in this community. William Reynolds, R Reynolds’ brother, and his wife, Kate, were the owners of Tanglewood. William raised standardbred racehorses and Kate was a horticulture enthusiast. Many of the things you see around Tanglewood Park today are reminders of their legacy and vision. Their home, The Manor House, is now a bed and breakfast in the park, and you can still see the plantings and gardens that Kate began throughout the park.

When you take a pumpkin picking hayride, you are in for a real treat. This scenic hayride through Tanglewood Park will start at The Tanglewood Stables. It will give you the opportunity to enjoy all the stables have to offer. They are home to the horses of Tanglewood, as well as privately boarded horses. Before your hayride, take a walk through the stables to see all the beautiful horses.

Once you board your hayride, you will enjoy a 15- to 20-minute ride through

Tanglewood Park to the pumpkin patch.

You will love seeing the beauty of this park, especially in the fall. There is so much beauty and history to take in, and the fall colors will be breathtaking. Once you arrive at the pumpkin patch, everyone gets a chance to pick out a pumpkin to take with them. There will be lots of great photo opportunities throughout the pumpkin patch.

After a great time at the pumpkin patch, you will continue the hayride as you return to the stables.

While you are at the park for your hayride, you can make a day out of it by enjoying everything there is to see and do. In addition to hayrides, the Tanglewood Stables offer 45-minute guided trail rides on the stables horses. This is available to guests age six and older. You will get to see more of the park and experience a unique adventure. cross from the stables, there are walking trails for all to enjoy.

If you like bike riding, bring your bikes along, because the trails are great for a bike ride, too. Be sure to bring a picnic

with you, so you can have lunch at one of the many picnic shelters throughout the park. There are also two great playgrounds in the park for all of the children in your group to enjoy. Situated along the Yadkin River, the 1170 acres of Tanglewood Park have something for everyone.

The Pumpkin Picking Hayrides at Tanglewood Stables are available throughout the month of October.

Weekend hayrides are available to the public for ten dollars per person, and the fee includes a pumpkin as well. Public hayrides are available on weekends starting as early as 10 00 a.m. and continuing throughout the day as demand calls for.

You can also reserve a private hayride for up to 25 people.

These rides are available seven days a week during any daytime hours. Be sure to call in advance for public or private rides, as a reservation is required.

Tanglewood Park is located at 40 1 Clemmons Road in Clemmons. GPS and Google Maps are not recommended when traveling to the park. There are printable directions on the website on the general information page. HARVEST AT CENTER GROVE Since

the 1950s, Center Grove Church has held a fall festival known today as Harvest at Center Grove.

Seventy years ago, it began as a small Halloween alternative for church members. It has since grown into a region-wide event for nearly 5,000 people each October, and today, Harvest has become, for many families in the Winston-Salem metro area, a safe Halloween alternative.

At Harvest, kids are invited to dress in their favorite costumes.

Their families experience foods of all kinds, candy (some 3,000 pounds of it) is given away “trunk-or-treat” style. With the cotton candy and all of the fun activities for kids (including bounce houses, face painting, and a giant rock wall), the atmosphere is like that of the fair, but with one big difference: everything about the event is free.

The event is put on each year as a gift from Center Grove to the families in the region so that the food and activities are all free. All Center Grove requires is that each family or attendee complete a simple registration form to help keep the evening safe. Preregistration is available throughout the month of October for a Fast Pass into the event on Halloween night. Interested families can pre-register on Sundays at the Clemmons Campus or the Sherwood Forest Campus (meeting at Jefferson Middle School), or by contacting the Center Grove office staff.

The preparations for Harvest at Center Grove begin months in advance as vendors are secured, supplies are gathered, and the candy is collected. Over 400 volunteers are involved. From providing a trunk for “trunk-or-treat,” serving food and drinks, and assisting with registration, to parking cars and welcoming the thousands who attend, these volunteers make the event a reality.

There is one predictable question Center Grove gets year after year about this Harvest event. And that is, “Why? Why do you do it?” The answer is found in the church’s deep commitment to caring for families and its clear sense of being on mission for Christ in Winston-Salem and beyond. Steve Corts, lead pastor at Center Grove, tells us, “Families matter to us because families matter to Christ. Because of Jesus, it truly is our joy to invest in families and spend time serving the people of our community in this way. In fact, part of volunteer preparation includes training our teams to say to those who thank us, “It’s my joy!”

“And we do that because it is just that—a joy for us.”

So, from a small, humble church gathering to a major annual community event, Harvest has become something unusual— something you need to see and experience for yourself. Mary Cameron:

A Woman with a Heart for Community

is a lot of community pride in Forsyth County.

And there seems to be a concentrated dosage of it found in Clemmons. Then, there’s Mary Cameron, who has a lion’s share of Clemmons pride, heart, and enthusiasm.

Since moving to Clemmons in 1984, Mary has been a community advocate with unparalleled energy. “My family and I settled in Clemmons just before the village was incorporated,” said Mary. “So I feel like I’ve been here since its birth.” Indeed, Mary has been well-invested in the life of Clemmons—helping shape it into the thriving community it is today.

With her tireless enthusiasm, she has served in a variety of ways, and currently serves as treasurer for four non-profit groups, including riends of the Library; Women Who Care; Returned Peace Corps Volunteers; and The omeowners Association in Fair Oaks. Additionally, Mary participates in other communitycentric projects, including Leadership Lewisville-Clemmons; the Rotary Club; the orsyth County Library Board; and the Novant ealth Clemmons Medical Center Board.

This grandmother of three is deeply rooted in activism. s a former Peace Corps volunteer who invested two years of service in Turkey, Mary understands the importance of giving to others. “When we serve others,” Mary said, “We learn about how others think. We see things

from other points of view. nd when we collectively do that we grow. Not just as individuals, but it grows and improves our community.”

It’s that mindset of leadership and service that have helped shape Mary. “Through my life, there have been four major milestones that have defined me as a person,” said Mary. She identifies those milestones as 1 her college experience at UNC-Greensboro; 2 her involvement in the Peace Corps; 3 getting married to her husband of 51 years and raising their two children; and 4 serving on the Council for the Village of Clemmons.

Mary said, “I started attending council meetings a few years after the village incorporated. After four years of observing, I decided I wanted to participate. I served for 24 years before taking a break in 2017. But I’m running for Council again. I love this community too much not to be an active and engaged participant in it. As a resident, I want to see Clemmons be successful, and I want to do my part to make that happen.”

Serving on the Council is an investment of both time and patience. “Councilpersons must understand the various issues and show up every second and fourth Monday of the month, educated on the topic and ready to make decisions,” Mary explained. “It requires understanding zoning and how those choices meet the standards of the Village of Clemmons.

It’s about understanding the budget,

handling citizen complaints, being familiar with ordinances.”

“Councilpersons must be strong communicators, adept listeners, skilled debaters, and possess the ability to present,” continued Mary. “They must know how to work together and learn from one another. Moreover, in my decades of experience, I’ve learned it’s also important to be pre-emptive and foster strategic relational development with outlying communities, such as Davie County and Lewisville. The Council has to be mindful of what our neighbors are doing and the potential impact on the Village of Clemmons.”

Mary simply states, “I want to be that voice for the Village of Clemmons.” t the core of any service-oriented person is a leader. Such is an accurate assessment of Mary. “Servant leadership takes people from where they used to be to where they need to be. It’s what we’ve been trying to do for the Village of Clemmons since 198 , when we incorporated. Then, we move forward by respecting the foundation and heart of who Clemmons is.

Colorful Curb Appeal Accented in Plants

season inspires leisure drives through neighborhoods to view eye-catching landscapes, such as flowered archways, hanging baskets, or gardens containing vibrant colors. Have you ever asked yourself, “What feature first caught my attention?” Was it a trellis, the creative use of large stones, or the layering of flower gardens? The ideal yard we yearn for rarely goes beyond the saved-up list of landscape ideas. This year, you can toss worries aside create relatively inexpensive props to boost curb appeal.

Chrysanthemums, the Ideal Fall flower All Spring and Summer, you have cared for your dahlias, Shasta and African daisies, zinnias, asters, and coreopsis. Don’t feel sad; the beautiful arrays of colors and blossoming shapes are also found within the color and shape ranges of the “diva” of the Fall season, the Chrysanthemum. Whether you like flashy or casual colors, mums are a preferred perennial, simply because they are pest- and disease-resistant. The plant makes few demands beyond adequate sunshine and water. Gardeners can remove the root-bound plant from an arrangement, late in the fall season, and plant with great success before the dormant season begins. Additionally, with the ease of placing a shovel in the center of a mum, you can divide it in half or quarters to double or triple the beauty next year.

A Bowed Structure Forgo the expensive arch, and consider an alternative means to create a unique entrance. With a two-by-two beam lodged in the ground, consider allowing the tendrils of a vine to form an archway with your guidance.

Confederate jasmine, Bougainvillea, climbing hydrangea, and clematis are excellent, non-refutable options. A secondary option is to plant a grapevine or blackberries—two fruits perfect for zone seven. One plant on each side is more than adequate.

Research your vine before planting. Climbing hydrangea has a propensity to leap to broaden its territory and wisteria is capable of destroying foundations, seeping between cracks, and climbing walls. As you consider the additional weight of fruit clusters, the initial structure may require bracing or another form of support.

Hanging Planters Along with a wrought-iron crook or wooden post, the addition of a well-placed large basket arranged with the accents of the harvest season can display a autumnal touch; therefore, include a few kale, lettuce, spinach, and cabbage plants. Kale, for instance, is eye-catching while adding a purple coloring to your arrangement.

Think about grasses and cascading plants, such as ivy or the potato vine. And, include the hearty pansy, which, like the mum, has a rainbow of colors!

Small to Big Planters Take time to meander through the aisles of your favorite local or

out-of-town nursery. Great deals occur during this time of year. You’ll be sure to find a variety that holds blooms from mid-summer through fall. While the Dahlia comes in every color under the sun, including autumn favorites, you will also find alyssum, asters, black-eyed-Susans, cannas, cornflowers, cosmos, dianthus, helenium, ornamental peppers, perennial sage, sedum, and verbena.

Have Bucket?

If you have an oval or circular galvanized bucket on hand, consider designing a unique arrangement using pumpkins, gourds, grape vines, and possibly a sweet potato vine for a cascading appeal. The diverse use of items placed together can create a remarkable display, whether you choose to place it near the lamppost or on the front porch.

Oh, Great Pumpkin! While your fondness for Charlie Brown may question the timing of growing a bed of gourds and pumpkins so early in the year, consider marking your calendar for June of 2020. And, remember, to produce quality-sized fruits, you’ll need a location easily accessible to a watering system!

All three phenomenal feats of architecture utilized one of Earth’s most plentiful resources with an intention. Not just to create an object of symbolism or beauty, but to create an impressive focal point. Across time, individuals used a builder or architect, landscaper or artist; today, those titles suit the all-in-one homeowner, who continues to seek ways to use rocks and stones purposefully. If you need an eye-catching idea to alter your landscape, the answer may be to consider a project with rocks and stones!

What is the Difference between a Rock and a Stone?

The cohesion of solidified mineral—such as quartz, feldspar, and mica—that form a mass is a rock. Although the words themselves are interchangeable, rocks can be rough and smooth, but only a stone can fit inside a pocket.

Rock Pathways Similar to the shapes of clouds, rocks and stones catch our attention. We happen upon them in our wanderings, and discover once in a while the coloring or form is the only reason you need to transfer it home. You may be a collector of stones. When a few rocks become a pile, one solution is to create a pathway.

Consider, first, the type of pathway. Do you seek the natural element, where moss or creeping perennials fill the areas of dirt filled around your stones, or stones secured in concrete for less upkeep? Ensure the dirt is removed well-below the grass line and leveled flat. Add a layer of rocks to encourage drainage before placing handfuls of soil on top, and prior to adding each stone. Once you organize into piles according to thickness, choose the most massive for your pathway and smaller stones for decoration. Another option is to create your own “stones” by making flat, concrete tiles with personal themes, such as handprints, or embedded with objects.

The Stone Wall While the first stone walls were loose field stones piled into a dry stack, the invention of mortar created impressive city walls, castles, and other fortifications. Since before the Middle Ages, the stone wall has been a successful and attractive building structure. While it does not necessarily take

a professional, the effort takes time and patience. You’ll need to level the ground and add a bottom layer of small stones. Low walls only require one layer, while walls over three feet need a two- or three-stone depth to stand.

TIPS: How-to-videos will assist in offering useful tips, essential tools, and stacking advice.

The Dry Creek For aesthetic purposes, river stones in a variety of sizes and shapes can create a dry creek bed that winds through a garden or down the yard. The secondary goal is to channel water and solve drainage problems, erosion, or hide a barren location. Planting perennials to suit either drought-stricken or wet areas will add splashes of color.

TIPS: Before starting, consider the width and the depth of your creek. Create the letter “v” and line with thick plastic.

Low areas may change your desired course, unless you alter the shallowness to ease the flow. Test your creek frequently to fix the problems and ensure the waterway is gentle. Add striking features such as a small pond, waterfalls, or a design of “S-curves.” Plant an assortment of flowers along the path. Plan well!

Tower of Rocks Stacking objects in a conical form is a natural curiosity. From an early age, children test their ability to balance by using hand-eye coordination to counterbalance the weight. You, too, can create a tower of rocks with the aid of a drill, rebar, and a diverse grouping of stones. As a decoration, the structure could be a simple attraction in a flower garden.

Creating a Memorial In nature is where we often find ourselves looking high and low for signs. One of the easiest and therapeutic ways to honor a memory is by creating a memorial. Consider the possibilities of a statue or birdbath, a bench, or planting a tree. Creativity and personalization may help you find the perfect place to sit and find peace.

Maintenance—What Needs to Be Done, and When?

It is highly recommended that you have your HVAC equipment serviced in the spring/summer and again in the fall/winter season. Diann Calcutt, Residential Service Dispatcher with Piedmont Steel Metal, said, “Regular maintenance of your HVAC system maximizes your system’s efficiency, which can improve your utility bills and minimize the number of emergency service calls by revealing potential problems that can be corrected inexpensively prior to causing major repairs. We recommend having a regular maintenance program, wherein each system is checked seasonally, including an overall inspection. At that time, lubricant and refrigerant levels are checked, filters are changed, drain lines are cleared, and any adjustments are made to keep your system running at its best.” However, not all HVAC systems require the same maintenance.

“Different systems require different maintenance. For example, even though heat pumps run throughout the year, it’s important in the fall season to check electric heaters on the indoor unit to make sure they are turning on and off properly, and all electrical components on the outdoor unit. Gas units need to be checked for leaks; older units are checked for CO leaks along with all safety concerns. Oil furnaces need new oil nozzles; oil filters, as well as their limits and safety, are to be checked in addition to any adjustments to blower belts,” commented Jeff Cook, Residential Service Manager with Piedmont Sheet Metal. While getting your HVAC checked by the professionals at Piedmont Sheet Metal is recommended, there are also some things you can do yourself.

“Keep your outdoor unit free and clear of any debris, limbs, and grass clippings. A steady temperature for the thermostat is best, because moving the temperature up and down constantly is very hard on a system. If you have an oil furnace, make sure your tank has the proper amount of oil in it to start the unit up. Regular filter changes are important, especially if you have pets inside,” Diann stated. Beyond regular maintenance, many homeowners with systems over 10 years old are faced with what to do, now that R-22, an HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) refrigerant often used in air-conditioning equipment, is being phased out by the EPA due to it depleting the ozone layer, beginning January 2020, after which it will no longer be produced or imported. Only recovered, recycled, or reclaimed supplies of R-22 will be available.

“Homeowners will still be able to have their equipment containing R-22 serviced, but as the supply becomes more limited, the costs to service systems with R-22 may rise.

Our vendors have stockpiled R-22 in preparation for this phasing-out process, so we hope to continue to take care of our customers using R-22,” commented Jeff.

“Choosing to repair any system with more than ten years of service on it is a gamble at best. Most manufacturers offer ten-year warranties on their products when properly registered, covering parts only, not labor or refrigerant. Changing a compressor can cost upwards of $2500 or more, depending on capacity and holding charge. It’s wise to get quotes on repairs and replacement before committing to either, and weigh your options against your budget,” said David Cook, Residential Estimator with Piedmont Sheet Metal. Of course, today’s systems are more energy-efficient, saving you money over time.

Do I Have to Get a New System?

As the US phases out R-22, you will need to make informed choices when servicing, repairing, or replacing an existing air conditioning unit. EPA has banned the manufacture of new equipment that contains R-22. The lengthy phase-out period allows you to replace your AC equipment that contains R-22 as you normally would when it’s old, inefficient, or ineffective. Depending on the system, an alternative refrigerant can be used as an R-22 replacement; older equipment may be able to be retro-fitted to make it compatible with R-410A, a non-ozone depleting HFC refrigerant.

“It isn’t always feasible to install completely new ductwork, but our systems are designed to meet the energy code in place at the time of installation.

the apple harvest in full blossom, it is hard to find an excuse not to discover new ways to bake and/or cook with them! With the abundance of scrumptious recipes to use them in, no doubt there is one for everyone. Check out below a few traditional-with-a-twist recipes to try out this apple season.

BLACKBERRY APPLE JAM: Servings: 2 mediumsized jars Total Time: 48-50 minutes

INGREDIENTS: 400 grams Blackberries 400 grams Green Apples, peeled & cored 400 grams Sugar Juice of 1 Lemon INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 250F. 2. Add the green apples and blackberries with ¼ cup water to a large saucepan over medium heat. Cover with a lid and cook for 18-20 minutes, or until apples have cooked down.

3. Reduce to low heat and mash the fruit to remove any lumps.

4. Add in the lemon juice and sugar to the saucepan. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, about 1-2 minutes.

5. Bring to a boil and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes.

Occasionally stir to prevent any burning.

6. Test jam for setting point. (Place a small amount of jam on the back of a spoon, allow it to cool for a few minutes, then use your finger see if the jam wrinkles when moved forward.)

7. Allow the jam to cool for 15 minutes in the saucepan. In the meantime, heat up the jars and lids in the oven, while the jam is cooling.

8. Working carefully, evenly distribute the jam into the jars and cover with their lids.

SALTED CARAMEL APPLE PIE: Servings: 8 Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 35-40 minutes Total Time: 45-50 minutes INGREDIENTS: For the (V) Salted Caramel Sauce: ½ cup Full-Fat Canned Coconut Milk ¼ cup Maple Syrup 7 Medjool Dates, soaked in water overnight ¼ to ½ tsp. Maldon Sea Salt For the Apple Pie: 4-6 Apples, a variety of Honey Crisp, Pink Lady, and Granny Smith Green Apples 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract 1 tsp. Allspice Pastry for double-crust pie (9 inches) INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400F. 2. To make the vegan salted caramel sauce, blend the soaked dates, maple syrup, and coconut milk on a high speed until creamy and smooth, about 2-3 minutes. Fold in the Maldon sea salt and set aside.

3. Peel and thinly slice the apples, then place them into a bowl.

Add in the allspice and vanilla extract and mix together until incorporated. Finally, fold in ½ cup of the salted caramel sauce until evenly distributed.

4. Line a 9-inch pie plate with the bottom crust and trim the edges.

Fill with the apple mixture and roll the remaining crust to fit the top of the pie over the filling. Trim and seal the edges together. Cut a few slits in the top of the crusts.

5. (Optional) Beat an egg to wash over the top crust and then sprinkle with little sugar.

6. Place the pie in your oven on the lower rack. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cool on a wire rack.

HOMEMADE SPICED APPLE CIDER: Servings: 10-12 Total Time: 3 hours INGREDIENTS: 8-10 (Assorted Variety) Medium Apples, quartered 1 Orange, quartered 4 Cinnamon Sticks 1 Tbsp. Whole Cloves 1 Whole Nutmeg ½ cup Sweetener of Choice, such as Maple Syrup, Brown Sugar, or Honey INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Add the oranges, apples, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and whole nutmeg to a large stockpot.

Pour in 14-16 cups of water to cover the spices and fruit.

2. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer for 2 hours. Lightly smash the apples and cover with the lid to simmer for another hour.

3. Strain the apple cider through a fine-mesh colander or cheesecloth, then stir in your choice of sweetener. Serve warm or refrigerate up to 5 days.

heavy blankets, warm clothes, and fluffy socks will envelop our bodies to reduce the chill. It is just part of the emotional ease we depend upon as snow and frost arrive to blanket our homes. We also surrender to dependence on electricity, which offers indoor air quality and thermal comfort for a rather hefty price. In seeking a home system that is energy-efficient and less expensive, homeowners ask the question, “What else can I do?”

PROPANE VERSUS ELECTRIC HEAT Of course, homeowners want to cut their electric bill in half. One option is to change your appliances, specifically, your range, washing machine and dryer, as well as to a tankless water heater and the fireplace to propane. The essence of your heat sources will then cost far less.

• A standard 330-gallon tank holds a maximum 80% of propane. With a price of $2.29 per gallon of propane and not including a delivery fee and taxes, the cost is $604.56. Thus, a potential annual investment in propane appliances may cost under $60 a month.

• As a form of green energy, this gas is non-toxic and cannot spill or leave a residue. Additionally, it is not harmful to soil or water. (As a safe gas, propane cannot ignite unless the source of air reaches 940 degrees.)

• One negative is, propane heating systems require a fan to disperse air beyond one room.

WHAT IS A PELLET STOVE? Rather than using wood, a pellet stove compresses wood or pellets to create a source of heat. For those looking for an alternative to removing ash from a woodburning fireplace, pellets produce only 1% of ash content. As a disadvantage, it requires electricity; therefore, without power, your secondary heat source cannot help you. Pellet stoves require weekly cleaning and to be professionally serviced yearly. If you desire a quiet heat source, the built-in ventilator and auger motor is quite loud.

• Propane heats the air up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, while operating in short intervals to minimize cost. An electric heat pump functions below body temperature, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, and, from the vent, feels cold.

THE TRADITIONAL WOODBURNING STOVE Watching the flames of a fire has been a relaxing and romantic pastime throughout the centuries. Out of a concern for open fire places and air pollution, self-contained units have been developed to help heat the entire home. While having logs and wood chips in supply can be an expensive and time-consuming aspect, wood is eco-friendly, in that it does not add carbon dioxide to the environment. Despite the convenience in pressing a button to turn off a gas fireplace, embers and the outpouring of heat can overpower the members of the household, changing a feeling of comfort to hot. For the goal of energy independence and savings, woodburning stoves still are a viable option.

Ah, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the superpower to receive knowledge just by merely touching a book? Instead, the number of pages in a chapter or the total number leads to an overwhelming feeling when the assignment is not your strength.

Suddenly, the villain “Procrastination” overtakes your time, and suddenly several excuses form into a reasonable answer.

“Yes!” you tell yourself, “I will start later,” with no defined date to begin.

• Never miss a lecture or tutorial.

What every learner needs to know is not often taught in school. The rules of understanding and processing information require knowledge of various strategies that will either work or be ineffective. The process takes time, sometimes a tweak here and there. The secret is you already have several superpowers. You need to figure out what they are and how to use the gift!

• To improve memory, create rhymes and jingles. Repeat auditorily.

HEAR IT AND UNDERSTAND The individual who learns by listening tends to have a photographic memory, does not enjoy taking notes, or sitting down to read chapter after chapter.

Auditory learners retain information most easily by hearing and repeating things, unlike verbal learners. Almost like breathing, the retainer of information finds comfort by sitting in a lecture or watching a film, observing demonstrations to learning a new language. At times, the gift of listening comes with one problem; concepts are so simple that causing distractions can often label this individual as a troublemaker.

By knowing you retain information by listening, 75% of a lecture, the following suggestions will help you succeed in a classroom.

• Use audiobooks, multimedia applications, and tape recorders as necessary tools. Talk through writing assignments by brainstorming, writing, and editing.

• Include spaces in notes to add details.

• Review notes, directions, and answers auditorily (even if you mouth the words) and convert pictures through verbal discussions.

SEE IT AND UNDERSTAND The individual who learns by seeing can remember when using images, colors, maps, and words. A visual style learner may always recognize a face, be detailed-oriented, and consider yourself an avid reader. And, perhaps, you keep a notebook in your purse or pocket at all times to take notes or record a thought.

Roughly 65% of all people need visual aids to learn. While lectures are difficult to follow for long periods, there are numerous ways to take advantage of your gifts!

• Choose a seat near the front of the classroom to focus your attention and clearly see the visual aids.

• Learn the Cornell-Note-Taking Method comprising two columns for class notes and follow-up notes, and SQ3R, which stands for survey, question, read, recite, and review.

• Always reread your notes after class or at the end of the day!

• Find a quiet area without music, television, and conversation.

• Utilize your need for color! Whether highlighter or writing in a brightly colored pen to emphasize essential words such as vocabulary or titles, you will remember the connection if written in a bright color.

• Sit away from areas where noises may enter the classroom, such as windows and doors.

• Use flashcards, and skim through chapters to process important test information.

• Start listening to audiobooks or Podcasts to improve your auditory skills.

EXPERIENCE IT AND UNDERSTAND We all began as tactile learners, utilizing all the senses of hearing, touching, and seeing. Words were finger-spelled, blocks designed towers, and paint created constructive messes of art. The experience of touch fosters those who are engineers, chefs and bakers, artists, athletes, doctors, and scientists. While kinesthetic learners find lectures boring and prefer typing to handwriting, the application to success combines both auditory and visual learning styles.

• Consider taking classes that involve movement rather than sitting.

• Study in blocks of time.

• Use color folders as a means to organize classes.

• Hold a stress ball or small stone to manipulate while listening and studying.

• Rewriting notes is just as valuable as saying them out loud to be heard.

• With your finger, trace graphs, flowcharts, and diagrams to boost memory.

• Draw pictures of information to process a key topic.

While online assessments can help you pinpoint your learning style(s), you already can determine your placement based the brief list of strengths and weaknesses.

Everyone has a unique mix of learning techniques. In addition to the three mentioned, auditory-musical, verbal, logical, social, and solitary are relatively new possibilities to enhance learning. The knowledge is available to accept your strengths while improving weaknesses.

Find out what works best for you. The only way to reach your goals is to try new strategies, reflect, and quite possibly tweak the method!

Trick or Treat Options

time for treats is just around the corner. Are you looking for options other than taking your kids door-todoor or driving them to friends and family all over town, just to ask for candy? There are other options—fun, safe, and creative ways to let kids (and parents) enjoy the evening and share the fun (and candy).

CHECK OUT THESE OPTIONS . . .

TRICK OR TREAT THROUGH THE OFFICE: Take a break from the day-to-day office routine and offer employees the option to bring their kids in after school for trick or treating. Let the kids dress up (maybe the employees, as well) and let that inner child have fun, too!

This option works for employees’ children or even a selected organization or school. It’s easy to pull off. Bring in candy/treats by the department or individually and let the children trick or treat their way through the office. Maybe include a costume contest and some fun activities in the lobby before they start their treat walks. Perhaps offer customized treat bags for each child and include small school supplies, as well as candy.

TRUNK OR TREAT: Many organizations and churches host trunk or treat events in their parking lots. This can end up as a friendly competition to see who can decorate their truck the best or even have a themed truck event with the hosts in costume, too. Typically, there are planned activities in addition to treating. The kids enjoy the fun; parents get in on the action if their “truck” is one of the stops. It’s a funfilled evening.

PUMPKIN PATCHES: Perhaps a local pumpkin patch has a planned event for kids with games, tractor rides, and treats. Check to see if there are special plans for kids on Halloween at your favorite place to get your pumpkin.

HAUNTED TRAILS/HAUNTED HOUSES: If you enjoy being scared or having a good scream, visit one of the local trails or houses in the area. Depending on the age of your children, these may be great fun for the family. Forget the candy—let the screams begin!

TRICK OR TREAT AT A NURSING HOME: If a local nursing home is offering to host trick or treaters, this may be a wonderful option. Let’s face it; many residents don’t get that many visitors. What could put a smile on someone’s face faster than a little child dressed as their favorite princess or action hero? The connection between the older and younger generation is priceless and a win for everyone involved. You may find yourself adopting one of the residents to visit as a family or a group “grandparent” for a class.

HAVE A COSTUME PARTY: Host a block party for the neighborhood

kids, Sunday School class, etc. Make it a tradition and rotate to other houses every year.

Have each family bring a bag of candy for a giant grab bowl of candy. Plan a costume contest, decorate sugar cookies, carve pumpkins, have game stations—let your imagination take the lead.

MOVIE MARATHON, ANYONE?: Not everyone enjoys going trick or treating. If that’s the case for your kids, plan a movie marathon for them. Depending on their ages, Casper, Hocus Pocus, Adams Family, and of course, The Great Pumpkin are great options. Movie options for older kids and teens can range from funny to creepy/scary with Freddy, Michael, or Chucky leading the list.

Use your imagination for other ways to spend family time together.

Perhaps host a scavenger hunt and have the kids work to find their treats. Buy or make a Halloween piñata and enjoy watching the scramble for candy, once it’s finally broken. Got a fire pit in your background? Bring on the S’mores.

Coffee, Donuts, and Jam at The Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre

Clemmons-native and West Forsyth High School student, 16-year old Ryan Wood, lost his battle with cancer on January 10th, 2013.

But thanks to the efforts of his friends, his memory lives on. The Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre was named to memorialize Ryan’s brief, albeit powerful legacy. While it serves to honor Ryan’s short life, as well as the lives of 12 other students who passed away too soon and too suddenly, the Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre is also an oasis of peace in the heart of Clemmons.

Since August 2015, the amphitheater has served as a community resource, designed to be enjoyed by the community of Clemmons. The original vision holds true—a place that could be enjoyed by many and used for a number of purposes, including theater performances, picnics, weddings, and as an outdoor classroom and more.

Located beside Clemmons Elementary School, where Ryan was once a student, the location is central and convenient for those in the community.

In the summer of 2019, the Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre also became a gathering spot for a third Saturday of the month event—the Clemmons Coffee, Donuts, and Jam event. Dr. Doug Gardner, a member of the Rotary Club of Clemmons, shared, “We wanted to bring more awareness to the amphitheater. The Clemmons Coffee, Donuts, and Jam event has helped facilitate awareness of the amphitheater, and we are excited at the way the community is embracing the event.”

While October will be the last event of this year, the plans are already in the works for the Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre to continue hosting Clemmons Coffee, Donuts, and Jam in the spring. “This will definitely continue as a monthly event between spring and fall,” said Doug.

“Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Clemmons, the Clemmons Starbucks, and Clemmons Krispy Kreme,” continued Doug, “we were able to offer Clemmons Coffee, Donuts, and Jam free of charge to the community—free coffee, free donuts, and free entertainment!” Indeed, a number of local musicians have entertained and performed over the last few months, including Ted Robinson, Mel Speas, Adam Mitchell, Ryan Reedy, Saunders Davis, and Tom Deaton and Noodlin’ Blues.

“As we wrap up the 2019 season this month,” said Doug, “we want to get a jump start on planning 2020. For those who knew Ryan, and the others who are memorialized at the amphitheater, this small gesture—this once a month gathering—serves to remind us all that life goes on. And that even a life as short as Ryan Wood’s has the power to leave a lasting legacy.

Haven Family Dentistry continues to grow, as they welcome Dr. Abby L. Becherer to their staff. Drs. Symmes, Wilkinson and Golden are pleased to have Dr. Becherer join them in their well-established practice. Dr. Becherer has recently relocated to Winston-Salem with her husband, who is also a dentist! She is excited to join Peace Haven Family Dentistry and is impressed with the family atmosphere that permeates the practice.

Dr. Becherer is a native North Carolinian, having grown up in Chapel Hill, where she attained her undergraduate degree in chemistry, as well as her Doctor of Dental Surgery, at UNC Chapel Hill. She then completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She is experienced in all major aspects of dentistry and her residency provided extensive training in crowns, bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, and dental implant restorations, including overdentures. As she begins to get to know her patients at Peace Haven Family Dentistry, Dr. Becherer most values developing a sense of trust with them, and she looks forward to catching up with them as they return for regular follow-ups. As in the family tradition of the practice, Dr. Becherer enjoys working with patients in varying stages of life and she hopes to get to know her patients through long-term service, enjoying hearing about them and their families.

Dr. Becherer appreciates that dentistry is both a science and an art. She enjoys working with her hands and creating things both at work and in her free time. “Last year, I learned I was going to be an aunt shortly after I bought my first sewing machine.

I was so excited that I offered to make my nephew a homemade quilt. Well, that committed me to learning to machine quilt!” She taught herself using books and YouTube, finishing her first quilt just in time for the baby shower. She uses the same artistic skills, attention to detail, and patience at work when treating her patients.

Dr. Becherer believes in preventative dental care, but understands when corrective action is needed.

Family Services Women’s Shelter Supporter Knows That Not All Domestic Abuse is Physical “You can do this. You made the choice to be free. You are free. We want you to be inspired to live your life fearlessly and to live every day with confidence, joy, and wellbeing. I did. With my best wishes, Angela Hackett Jenkins Every time someone makes an order on her website, Angela sends a note just like the one above to a Safe House, like the Family Services Women’s Shelter, along with a box gift set of shampoos, conditioners, shower creams and body lotions.

She said it’s her mission because she knows firsthand what it takes to triumph over fear and feel free.

Today, nearly two decades later, it’s easy to see that the red flags were there all along. But for ngela, they didn’t really come into focus until the handgun was placed on her dining room table for her to see when she returned home for work.

“He made a point to tell me it was unregistered, and that he bought it from a guy who had recently been in prison and was on work-release,” Angela recalled. “That was when I knew my time with him was limited.”

IT WASN’T ALWAYS THAT WAY.

When she tried to win him over with a nice dinner, he’d come home late and throw it in the trash. He kept her from having real friends, and when she committed the cardinal sin of not using Carpet Fresh—he’d make her sit and watch as he violently threw the contents onto the floor and demonstrated how to properly vacuum a rug.

He never physically abused me,” Angela said. “He just tormented me, day in and day out. He made my life a living nightmare.”

She has countless stories of mental abuse and embarrassment—how he would keep them moving to new places to keep her from really getting too close to anyone. How he would punch holes through walls when she didn’t cook something right or clean the way he thought it should be cleaned.

One time, while on a business trip to New York together, Angela was waiting on her husband at the bar downstairs and another man struck up a conversation with her.

“When he saw the guy talking with me, he grabbed me sternly in front of everyone then said, Are you gonna spread your legs for this guy?’ He would completely humiliate me in front of people just to shut me down.”

When this happened, Angela’s reaction was to wonder what was wrong with her. Why she couldn’t make him happy and what she could do better next time.

She grew up in the same neighborhood as her ex-husband.

They attended the same high school in Florida. They began dating in 1995 right out of college, and it appeared he had the entire package—charm, a great family, and Angela said she fell in love.

A short time before she came home to a gun on her dining table, a neighbor in Waco, Texas warned her of what the problem might actually be.

Almost immediately, they moved from their familiar Floridian surroundings to Tennessee and she said she noticed signs of trouble virtually right away. But at the time, she just thought he was young and that she could fix it all.

As it turns out, the neighbor said she was a recovering alcoholic herself and she knew the signs. She had witnessed Angela’s husband discarding large liquor bottles a little too often.

Angela landed a good job in banking—she advanced quickly and was getting quite a bit of recognition as an up-and-comer.

But her success was not resonating well at home.

“I don’t know. I guess he saw my success as a threat,” she said.

“I would come home and he’d be rage-filled for no reason.

He’d say things to me like ‘no one is going to want you,’ or ‘you’re too ugly or fat, or you’re not smart enough to be promoted to the next level.’”

“We were just talking one day and she said, ‘do you throw a lot of parties?’” Angela recalled.

The neighbor told Angela that she should go through the house and look for hidden bottles, and other signs like water bottles filled with vodka.

“I did what she said, and I remember I just sat on the floor and sobbed,” she said.

The alcohol abuse, a discovery of drug abuse, and the unregistered gun on her dining room table was too much. Angela sought the counsel of her pastor—who told her that she needed to get out.

So she waited until her husband was away on business and she called her father sobbing and asked him to come get her.

Today, as the founder of Solarté Collections, Angela is concentrating on growing her business while focusing on her mission to empower women. Her dedication to the cause is the most prominent thing on her website, SolarteCollections com.

We are especially committed to women who are working to overcome adverse relationships and life circumstances. To do so, we provide products and financial support to safe houses for women all over the country.”

But she’s also in a dedicated and caring marriage to a man who cherishes her, respects her, and supports her ambition. She said she hasn’t been able to write the big checks she wants to, to support the Family Services Women’s Shelter and other programs, but she hopes to.

No company hits it big overnight,” she said. “But we’re getting there.

I love my brand, and I love sharing that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. My ex-husband wanted me to stay down. But I couldn’t stay a victim. I’m a fighter and I found my way back.”

Navigating Social Media during Back-to-School Season

another school year kicks off, there is so much to think about for parents and guardians that it can seem like the list never stops growing! School supplies to purchase, new teachers to meet, paperwork to fill out, tryouts, and practices to remember— wait, who is the student here? Finding beauty in the chaos of a new school year, many parents feel sharing their child’s back-to-school details on social media is a fun way to include family and friends in the excitement. Whether posting firstday-of-school photos or sharing updates about their new classroom, there is yet another thing to add to that growing list of yours, and that’s keeping them safe on social media.

As innocent as it may seem to share social media posts highlighting the life of your student, there are simple precautions to be aware of in this ever-changing world of technology to keep kids safe.

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS Everyone has at least one person come to mind when they hear the term “oversharer.” In a world where you can share every minute detail with an audience at the touch of a button, that number can grow very quickly. When it comes to the details of your student, remember that less is more. Even if you have a private account, the information is privy to more eyes than you realize. If you post photos of your child looking cute before a school day or they share about a school function, there are some details to steer clear of in sharing. After all, do you really want anyone to have access to where and what your child is doing?

Here is a list of information that is better left off of your social media post: • Name of your child’s school • Teachers name(s) • School schedule • Real-time location check-ins • Confidential Information of any kind THE SQUEAKY WHEEL GETS HEARD (AND IT MAY NOT BE A GOOD THING) It feels nice to have a sounding board online, but try to remember that every opinion and story you share is available to get back to people you may wish wouldn’t have seen it. For the sake of your child, keep public complaints to a minimum regarding teachers, coaches and school administration. The same can go for sharing information or thoughts about other students that are in class with your son or daughter. Negative remarks shared on social media can be incredibly selfsabotaging for you or your child when the wrong eyes come across it. Again, if you’re thinking “I have a private account” don’t forget that little thing called a “screenshot”!

KEEP THE CONVERSATION OPEN Meeting new friends is a big part of starting a new school year, and that can sometimes bring about social anxiety, comparison syndrome, and even new bullies. Always be aware of signs that your child may be being bullied at school or online, and have talks about being nice to others. Remind them to set their profiles to “private” and never accept requests from strangers or someone they do not feel comfortable about. Make sure your kids and teens fully understand that what they post can be used against them and never truly erased.

Social media can help them stay connected with friends and family, improve their communication skills, and give them a creative outlet to share their talent for music, art or writing. As their caretaker, it’s important for you to lead by example and show them that the beauty of life is what happens outside of social media, and when we aren’t on our phones. Sharing that life can be a fun experience, but having some guardrails in place can help make it better for everyone.

in Winston-Salem at Hanes Park for Centennial Celebration

Our

city is filled with history, and on September 7th history was made once again at Hanes Park in the West End area of Winston-Salem. From 11 00 am 2 00 pm locals gathered at anes Park to celebrate the Centennial of Hanes Park and the recent renovations and improvements to the park.

The improvements of anes Park were financed by the 2014 bonds and consisted in restoring the main entrance to the park, landscaping and seating around the tennis courts, rebuilding the parking lot, building a new softball field and storage building, and new walls, stairs and landscaping along Sunset Drive. These improvements were overseen by William Royston, director of Parks & Recreation, and Robert Prestwood, the city engineer. Miller Landscape Architecture did the design work.

The Centennial was celebrated with games, sports, music, food trucks, face painting, a history tent and more, along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the park’s improvements. There was something for everyone to enjoy, while celebrating an iconic piece of our local history.

P. . anes bought the land west of West nd in 190 , including the presentday park, and established a dairy farm on the land. Thirteen years later, in 1919, Hanes relocated his farm to the West Highlands neighborhood and donated 47 acres to the City of Winston-Salem on a condition that the land be developed for recreational use within two years. Hanes’ direction was straightforward and stipulated that the land be used for a public park and educational purposes only. There were not to be any residential dwellings or businesses on the land.

In 1921, the tennis courts and two baseball fields were built, followed by a track and a football field. dditional tennis courts were built inside the track. In 1923, along the park’s northwest side, R.J. Reynolds High School built their gymnasium and swimming pool. Two years later the city built Wiley Elementary School.

Over its 100 years, anes Park has provided thousands of citizens with benefits, from the recreational opportunities and public events to the educational ones at Reynolds High School. and now Wiley Middle School. Celebrating 100 Years of

Giving Back at The Winston-Salem Foundation

its founding on October 14th, 1919, The Winston-Salem Foundation has been breaking ground and changing lives in our community.

Today, the organization is known for helping community leaders, nonprofits, and local citizens, such as teachers, with grants and support, as well as providing scholarships to students of all ages wanting to further their education. These efforts have been developed through the years and have become influential parts of the Foundation’s history. With their centennial celebration occurring throughout this year, the organization is also celebrating where they’ll go in the future.

According to The Foundation’s website, over 500 students receive funds each year through over 125 scholarship funds. To apply, all you need to do is visit wsfoundation.org scholarships. rom there, students will fill out a “OneStop Scholarship Application,” which will populate the various scholarships students are eligible for. Daisy Rodriguez, Director of Student Aid, has only been with the Foundation for a year, but has quickly come to see the huge impact the program makes.

“The concept for the Foundation came from the Cleveland Foundation, which was started in 1914. Since then, we are fortunate to have benefitted from generations of philanthropy. Right now, our job is to be the best stewards and complement the work that we have been doing for the past 100 years,” said Scott Wierman, President of The WinstonSalem Foundation.

“We want to give as many scholarships as possible to students, both traditional and nontraditional. The oldest student we have had was 63 years old! These scholarships make a big impact on the recipients, no matter what their age.

Also, in order to be a happy and healthy community, it is important for our residents to be educated, who then can grow and develop a prosperous workforce,” Rodriguez commented.

Currently, the foundation is focusing on transportation and racial equity initiatives. “Racial equity and equity in education are two major issues,” stated Wierman. “Our goal is to create a more inclusive community, as well as helping to provide the best education and possible outcomes for all children in Winston-Salem.”

One way The Winston-Salem Foundation is working towards accomplishing those goals is through the student aid and scholarship program. This initiative awards

The scholarships include merit- and financial-need-based funds to students attending a four-year university or a community college. Need-based awards are granted on a first-come, first-serve basis. pplications for the 2020 2021 school year will be accepted starting on December 15th, 2019. To be considered, students do not yet need to know which school they are attending. However, keep in mind, they do need to be committed to a certain school to receive a scholarship.

This past school year, 615 awards were given to 534 students, equaling over one million dollars.

The benefits of the student aid and scholarship program can have a monumental impact on a person, and Rodriguez has seen just that for herself.

“My younger daughter was a scholarship recipient, making my experience come full circle,” said Rodriguez. “As a mother, first-generation college student, and former educator, I know the importance of higher education. I’m always surprised by the care and compassion people have for this program.”

Adding to Rodriguez’s comment, Wierman stated that many people are looking to do good deeds to help build a better community. The student aid and scholarship program makes a difference for donors in the community, but it makes the most difference in the lives of the students, as one scholarship recipient once said: “I would just like to give you my gratitude and say thank you for the scholarship!

This scholarship means the world to me, because I am a first-generation student who truly needs this opportunity. You will not regret the investment you have made in me.”

Keep Your Family and Pets Safe This Halloween and Enjoy Healthy Sugar-Free Treats

BY SUSAN SCHABACKER Craving sweet treats this Halloween? Steer clear of sugar-laden sweets. Instead, opt for healthy snacks that appeal to your sweet tooth, but forgo the sugar.

WHY AVOID SUGAR? Sugar is well known to be bad news for anyone. It can aggravate acne and can cause mood swings, plus wreak havoc on your blood sugar. But, it can also cause far worse problems like cancer and heart disease. In fact, sugar is the culprit in a lot of harmful health issues.

ALSO AVOID ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS On the other hand, some sugar-free candies and gum contain ingredients, such as aspartame and sucralose, which can be bad for humans. Watch out for chocolate and xylitol, found in some sugar-free candies and gum, which can be very dangerous for dogs, causing increased heart rate, hyperactivity, seizures, and even death. But, thankfully, there are some sweet alternatives like stevia, which comes from a plant in powder or liquid form, as well as maple syrup and honey, that are not toxic. What’s best? Stick with what’s natural.

This Halloween, do without the harmful sweet stuff, but still enjoy your sweet treats! Here are two fun recipes for Halloweeninspired treats your kids and family will enjoy.

SWEET SUGAR-FREE TREATS Ghoulish Apple Mouths INGREDIENTS: 3 red apples, cut vertically in half to form lips 6 tablespoons peanut butter (or another fav nut butter to spread for ghoulish gums) 2 strawberries, sliced to create tongues Several sunflower seeds for teeth Several plastic bugs like flies and spiders for even more “eww” factor!

INSTRUCTIONS: With a paring knife, carve away the inside of the apple to leave gaping lips. Spread nut butter inside each mouth and place sunflower teeth along upper and lower “gums,” leaving a small snaggle space between each tooth. Add a strawberry slice “tongue” between the lips and, to gross guests out, garnish ghoulish apple mouths with plastic bugs. Remember to let your guests know those bugs aren’t edible!

Frankenstein Kiwis INGREDIENTS: Kiwis (heads) Pretzel Sticks (mouths and bolts) Dried wild blueberries (eyes) INSTRUCTIONS: Slice kiwi in half so it stands up. With a peeler, remove some fuzzy skin at the top to create messy hair. Add a small pretzel stick for Frankenstein’s mouth. Then, push two thick pretzel sticks into both sides of Frankenstein’s neck. For the eyes, press two dried wild blueberries above the pretzel mouth. It’s your creature. It’s alive or at least edible! and it’s definitely healthy .

Here are some health-saving safety tips for your furry friends to keep them safe, healthy, and happy this Halloween.

BASICS OF PET SAFETY THIS HALLOWEEN • Keep candy and other treats stowed away where your canine companion can’t get them. Even high countertops may not be off-limits if you have big counter-surfing dogs who may swipe your stash when you’re not looking. Be careful with wrappers and packaging, too, which clever canines may find equally appetizing.

• Pets can dart outside, so minimize the risk of your furry friend getting lost, stolen, or hurt. Keep your buddy on a leash and be sure your pet is tagged with proper identification. n embedded microchip is always a good idea.

• When dressing your pet up along with the kids, make sure your pet is safe and comfortable. Not all pets tolerate attire. If they’re not feeling it, don’t force them. Be smart and try costumes on before Halloween in case adjustments are needed.

• Guard dog or greeter? Depending on your pet’s temperament, you may want to keep your canine companion away from visitors. Halloween may be the time to leave your pet in another room, far from noisy doorbell rings of trick-or-treaters.

Keeping your pet calm, stress-, and anxiety-free is important for everyone.

• Jack-o-lanterns may be an important part of the Halloween holiday tradition, but keep Fido away from carved pumpkins and open flames. Instead, opt for batteryoperated lights.

Easy DIY HALLOWEEN Costumes FOR Kids Like

most holidays, Halloween has become more commercialized every year, and can very quickly become extremely expensive, if you let it. Not only can it get expensive, it can bring out some serious cases of “the gimmies,” which is when kids stroll down the aisles of stores asking parents to buy them everything. A great way to get around this is to encourage creative homemade costumes.

Lumberjack This costume can be relatively easily made from items found in your home. For the outfit, pair jeans with a flannel shirt and a fitted knit hat, and throw in suspenders and boots if you have them. Make an ax out of an old paper towel roll and cut up cardboard, such as from a cereal box. Using a makeup pencil, draw small lines on their face until you create the illusion of a beard. Don’t forget to teach them to yell “Timber!” when they are out and about.

Lego Block Cut head and arm holes out of a cardboard box that your child fits into. Glue on six old individual applesauce containers in the same pattern as a Lego block, but make sure to wash them thoroughly before attaching. Spray paint it whatever color your child wants it to be, and wear the same color long-sleeve shirt and pants underneath to pull the costume together.

Cookie Monster Tie a piece of elastic around your child’s waist, and then attach multiple strips of blue tulle until you have achieved the desired thickness of tutu. Cut out eyes and a mouth out of felt, and attach to a blue shirt. Cut out light brown felt circles and then attach smaller dark brown or black felt circles to make cookies, and then attach these all over the tutu, as well as blue tights. Attach one to a headband, as well, to finish the look.

Minecraft Creeper

Start with a green hoodie and find at least four different colors of green in felt sheets.

Cut these into 2” by 2” squares, and then attach in a random pattern all over the hoodie. Repeat this process with a pair of green pants. Using the makeup of the same colors of green, draw random squares on any exposed skin.

Superheroes When your child has chosen which superhero they want to emulate, pick up a basic cotton long-sleeved shirt and matching sweatpants in the base color of that superhero.

Using the right colors, cut out the superhero logo in felt and attach it to their shirt by either hot glue gun or needle and thread. If your superhero has a cape in their costume (or if your child just wants a cape—because accuracy is not the most crucial point of making Halloween costumes for children), cutting a semi-circle in a yard of fabric and attaching velcro at the ends is a quick and easy way to make a cape. For the final touch, make a mask using felt and ribbon.

“Houston, We Have a Man on the Moon!”

is a memorable year. It is the last 365 days before the start of a new decade. It is also the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down on November 9, 1989, and 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the first man, Neil Armstrong, walking on the Moon on July 20th, 1969. The commemoration of the Moon landing is a time to remember the many events and people it took to make history. As we prepare to make new history in 2020, let’s take a look back at spacecraft Apollo 11’s trip, the first lunar landing, and some of the lesser-known facts about them.

The mission was titled the “Apollo 11” mission and was NASA’s fifth Apollo mission.

Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin, Jr. left Cape Kennedy, Florida on July 16, 1969. Today, Cape Kennedy is known as Cape Canaveral.

Aldrin and Armstrong were the only ones to actually walk on the Moon. They landed in the Lunar Module called the Eagle. The two walked around for three hours, conducted experiments, and collected Moon dirt and rocks. Fun fact: researchers think the rocks were about 3.7 billion years old. As for Collins, he stayed in orbit, did experiments, and took pictures.

President Richard Nixon was prepared for anything that might have happened on July 16th. He had two speeches ready for the public; one for the victory of the mission and another to remember the astronauts and their hard work if the mission failed.

A tie to North Carolina history was on board Apollo 11.

Pieces of the Wright Brothers’ first airplane had been given to Neil Armstrong by the Air Force. After the trip, Armstrong was able to keep half of the pieces. This little gesture helped make the history of flight come full circle.

Just like the launch, the landing on the Moon was watched by an estimated 600 million people.

On July 20th, 1969, at 10:56 pm Eastern time, Neil Armstrong took the first step that became known as “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Even Disneyland paused its festivities to show the live broadcast on a stage in Tomorrowland.

Communication between space and Earth may have been a little fuzzy. Armstrong’s quote, stated above, may have been misheard. The correct quote is, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

In 2006, technology uncovered the “a,” which is said not to have been heard due to radio static.

After coming back to Earth on July 24th, Armstrong, Collins, and Aldrin had to be quarantined until August 10th. They were placed in a mobile quarantine unit and then transported to the NASA Lunar Receiving Laboratory at Houston’s Johnson Space Center.

Plans for the Apollo program had started at the beginning of the decade. In 1960, NASA announced a plan to send a small crew to orbit the Moon. A year later, President Kennedy made a public speech and commitment to land a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. Since then, Kennedy’s speech has become famous with the memorable line “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”

It is said that it took approximately 400,000 scientists, engineers, and technicians to make the Apollo 11 mission a success. However, it wasn’t solely men who worked on the mission. Margaret Hamilton was only 33 years old when she wrote the code for the Apollo Guidance Computer, the code that sent Apollo 11 to the Moon. She is also known for coining the term “software engineering.” Another well-known name is mathematician Katherine Johnson. She calculated how the Lunar Module would return to the main spaceship after landing and created backup navigation charts in case the astronauts’ systems failed in space. Lastly, Christine Darden was a “human computer” during the Apollo era.

The launch of Apollo 11 was watched by millions of people on television. Yet, supporters and VIP spectators were able to see the historic moment in person, just 3.5 miles away from the launch pad. Viewers

SIBLING Rivalry

If

you have two or more children, you have probably witnessed sibling rivalry. The American Psychological Association has said that sibling rivalry refers to the feelings of envy, jealousy, and competitiveness that exist between brothers and sisters within the family.

The Center for Parenting Education has named various forms of sibling rivalry, such as: • Name-calling • Blaming • Tattling • Throwing things • Hiding things of importance to the other sibling • Arguing • Challenging beliefs • Lying • Poking • Stealing It is inevitably going to be hurtful to watch your kids attempt to tear one another down. Sometimes sibling rivalry is outgrown and other times it can last a lifetime.

Sibling rivalry can occur in childhood, adolescence, and even adulthood, as two or more siblings compete for the parents’ love and attention. The American Academy of Pediatrics found that almost 80 percent of children grow up with at least one brother or sister.

You want to respect that every child has his own temperament, mood, and personality. As a parent, the best thing you can do is serve as a strong positive

role model, so your child knows how to be considerate of others, to respectfully disagree at times and solve problems in life. eep in mind that your first child may have trouble accepting a new sibling and giving up his position as only child.

In order to prevent the first child from reverting to infantile behavior, allow him to have an active role in your pregnancy plan and birth experience. You want to make him feel important by giving him age-appropriate helping tasks, with the hope that it may deter him from wanting to rival his sibling and assert his power.

It really is possible for your children to get along. Some tips that can help create a healthier dynamic include: • Do not show favoritism by taking sides • Stay calm and remain an objective party • Never assign blame • Comment on each child’s strengths and do not make comparisons • Attempt to give each child attention via alone-time every day • Teach your child how to express his emotions with statements like, “I feel ___ when you ___.”

• Give your kids time and space to go separate ways • Do activities as a family • Practice turn-taking • Teach your kids coping strategies, such as taking a deep breath, counting to 10 or walking away from an uncomfortable situation

• Let your kids know they are loved Be sure to establish rules in your home as to what behavior is, and is not, acceptable. Remember that physical aggression should not be tolerated at any cost. Some clear expectations you want to communicate include: • No kicking • No grabbing • No yelling To give extra encouragement, be sure there are rewards and punishments involved. Praise your child for being kind, sharing, or expressing his feelings.

If your child acts out, you may want to restrict a privilege, such as time with technology, or give them a time out.

Depending on the ages of your kids, it may be beneficial to supervise them as you allow them to work through the conflict. younger child may need some extra help. Another great idea is to hold a family meeting where you review rules and talk about your kids’ successes, as well as any mishaps that took place during the week. Do not always step in right away, as conflict resolution is a critical life skill and practice makes perfect. Remember that sibling rivalry is a natural part of growing up in a household where there is more than one child in the family. There will always be some instances where the sibling rivalry is so severe that it hinders daily functioning; in which case, you want to reach out to a psychologist, family therapist, or pediatrician for guidance.

To Everything There Is a Season It’s

Fall!—or Autumn, if you prefer. The leaves turning beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow before gracefully falling to the ground. The sound of the leaf blower or old-school rake, bundling them into piles, and the laughter of children happily jumping into them, scattering them once more. The cool, crisp air; no mosquitoes; fall vegetables; hearty meals that warm your soul—there is so much to love about this season.

One of my favorite recollections of Fall was traveling to a wonderful resort in the Blue Ridge mountains of Maryland.

My family and close friends traveled up and spent long weekends where we each had our own cabin. I loved going on hikes, the scent of fires burning in the cabins’ fireplaces, gathering what I considered to be the prettiest leaves of Fall; but most of all, I loved walking around the property and hearing the dry leaves and sticks crunch and crack beneath my feet.

As much as I loved those days, the ones now are just as special. This is my daughters’ favorite time of year. They embrace everything about this season. Gone are any vestiges of summer decorating their homes, all replaced by autumnal colors and objects—which I do, as well. There is something so heartwarming in seeing your children finding the same joy in things that you do and then imparting it to their children.

Just like in my childhood adventures, our family takes a long weekend fall trip. Since the arrival of grandchildren, we have stayed in a number of different places that have not only the right accommodations, but fun things to entertain the kids on-site, too. We also consider areas around where we might stay, looking for family-friendly restaurants, playgrounds, trail rides, gem mines, and other sources of entertainment. With a wide range of ages, we need to find places that work for our varied interests. The very best aspect of this trip is having everyone together.

It is a relaxed time that makes for many stories, games, and laughter.

Another great thing about this season is all it entails— pumpkin selection is high on the list. I love going with the different families and watching as my grandchildren search

and search for the perfect pumpkin. The pick-your-own pumpkin patch can be a daunting place, with what seems to be an endless supply of every size and shape imaginable of these orange gourds. The smiles on their faces are priceless, as their eyes spot just the right one they want to take home that will later be turned into a jack o’ lantern.

Fall is also the time for apple picking. A trip to the mountains makes for another special family time. Apple orchards usually have several varieties of apples to pick, along with other treats to enjoy after the children have helped selecting enough to make delicious pies and applesauce. Apple cider and apple-cider doughnuts are quickly consumed with more to take home and enjoy.

Whether this is your favorite season or not, there are so many opportunities to be with your family. It’s a wonderful time for bonding, getting to see the many sides of your grands, learning more of their likes and dislikes, what new experiences they are willing to try, and what amuses or frightens them.

A major event of the Fall season for most children is Halloween, but it is important to remember that Halloween is not for everyone. When trick-or-treating with youngsters, be aware that some decorations and costumes may be upsetting to them. Forcing them to wear a certain costume or go up to a home that has scary decorations will only make the event miserable for all involved. Plan your time and route, keeping in mind their ages and attention span.

Now go out and embrace the season and all it has to offer—but take your grandchildren along to make it even more enjoyable by experiencing it through their eyes.

College Planning Season has Begun

For

high school juniors, and especially seniors, this is the college planning season. A time for campus visits, completing FAFSA (if you don’t know what it is now, you will eventually), searching the internet for college information and stats, and receiving countless invitations by mail to select your choice for college and apply for college loans. It can be a stressful and confusing time for sure. Fortunately, many high schools today offer guidance on the subject and assistance in wading through the minutiae. It’s also an exciting time as well. The process of determining which schools you want to apply to, whether its preference schools, safety schools, or your primary choice in early decision, the process does have its fun moments. The anticipation of what the future will be like, at least the near future, provides promise and an endless world of possibilities.

The reality, however, can be quite alarming when the future suddenly morphs into the present. There are hidden secrets that are not discovered until well into their time in college. For instance, according to Complete College America, a national student clearinghouse research center, the average number of years it takes a college student to graduate is six. That’s two more years than they expected. The good news is, that’s two more years around campus with friends. The bad news is, that’s another two years of tuition and room and board they have to pay for. Some of the reasons indicated are the number of students who choose to transfer to other colleges (33%) whose credits won’t transfer. Another is the lack of planning and proper use of school guidance resources. The report indicates that those students spend 40% more than students graduating in four years. These are just some of the surprises students discover along the way.

According to CollegeAtlas.org, of the 70% of Americans who attend 4-year colleges, 30% of incoming freshman students drop out after their first year. More than half 5 % of college students will drop out by year six. On average these students go on to get jobs that pay 35%, or 21,000, less each year than their college graduate counterparts, and moreover, they are still obligated for the remaining school debt they incurred

during that time. For those that have begun this journey unsuccessfully, as it relates to earning a college degree, a study of 4.5 million non-first-time students those that left school and returned later) reported by insidehighered.com indicates that only about one-third earned their degrees within eight years.

The typical picture a high schooler has of college, mostly of 18 to 24-year-olds who live in the dorms or apartments on campus, don’t have to work, attend sporting events, concerts, parties, and oh, yes, study along the way, is not completely accurate today. or instance, over a third 38% of college students are 25 or older. Nearly six out of ten students 58% have a job while they’re enrolled. quarter of them 2 % are raising families; four in ten are attending school part-time, and three-quarters commute to campus. As you can see, that’s a little different picture and one that includes a bit more hard work and responsibility than the original version.

The moral of this story (if there is one) is simply this… enjoy the time as you begin this next chapter of your life. However, if possible, enter it with your eyes wide open, aware there will be responsibilities, obstacles, and challenges that lie ahead. Find the motivation, drive, and passion within you to overcome those challenges and rise high above those hurdles to reach the finish line. nd remember, even if life throws you a curveball in the future that impairs your ability to start or finish in the expected time frame, or you must drop out for one reason or another, it doesn’t mean that the goal you have right now can no longer be achieved. It just means you’ll have to take a different route to get there. Regardless, as long as you reach your goal, you can still enjoy the fruits of your labor and the rewards of your hard work and determination to obtain it. It won’t be easy, but it’s entirely possible and most definitely worth it. Use this opportunity to enhance your future, and don’t let it pass you by.

Good luck to all the students embarking on this next journey and to their parents who share in it with them. I leave you with this old Irish Proverb. “May the dreams you hold dearest, be those that come true, and the kindness you spread keep returning to you.”

Fighting Teen “Perfect” Body Image and Gaining Self-Confidence

morning, green eyes stare into the full-length bedroom mirror and brows frown. Emily, a sophomore, sees only her imperfections.

It becomes routine to scrutinize her body, piece by piece, and compare herself to other girls. “I look disgusting,” she tells herself, “Why is everyone else so perfect?” Emily, along with millions of other girls, wants to be so much more without accepting one secret—she already is!

Airbrushing and Lighting With every turned page of a fashion magazine or passing minute of a video,

teenage girls understand one fact— models have the ideal, perfect body and flawless skin. They are correct! The average model weighs 25% less than a healthy woman. Combining a widecollection of hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, and time before and postproduction, the image is a construction.

Despite its power and influence, it also has a superficial quality. The tall, slender figures that we are biologically programmed to define as beautiful are unrealistic. If models admit to having insecurities about their looks, even the most beautiful body and face must fear not being enough!

Statistics Paint a Brutal Truth Every week, teenage girls spend 31 hours watching television, 15 hours online, and over three hours looking into the mirror. An eye-opening 80% find their appearance dissatisfying.

And, one out of four girls admits to intentionally missing meals as a means of dieting. ulie, age 15, shares, “Makeup and body products are supposed to help build our self-esteem; but when you look at the models, I wonder if I am supposed to look like that?

I kind of want to. I get down on myself because I just want to look like that; so, I buy the products because it makes me feel better.”

Girls Under Age 10 For 4000 years, dolls have been a beloved part of human culture, whether designed from paper or corn husks, fabric or wood, porcelain or vinyl. Mattel manufactured the first modern fashion doll in 1959 under the name of Barbie.

For six decades, young girls saw their body image formed through long legs, a slim waist, perfect clothes

and accessories, and attractive friends.

The truth is, the fundamental design of Barbie’s body would break in a human.

One detriment is a weakened back; she would have to walk on her hands!

Statistically, 81% of girls under age 10 are afraid to be fat. Sophie, a fourth-grader, shares, “Most of the girls in my class are tiny and I don’t like my weight. I don’t see myself as big. I just want to be skinny.”

How to Help Your Child with the Loss of a Pet

Whether

you are six years old or sixty years old, one of the best feelings is holding a puppy or kitten and hearing, “It’s yours to love.” The joy that comes with that moment and so many to follow will eventually, hopefully many years later, be followed with the heartbreak of losing that beloved member of the family. While death is something that we as adults have a better understanding of, a child only knows that their best friend is gone and the loss is too big to take in and accept. The death of a pet is never easy, speaking from experience as an adult, but helping your child with the grief of the passing of a pet, step by step, is not only necessary, but can prepare them for future losses in their lives.

For most kids, pets, whether that’s a kitten, puppy, rabbit, turtle, hamster, and anything in between, are more than just animals their families own, they’re members of the family and the best of friends. amily pets are often the first to greet kids in the morning and after school. Your family pet may be the one your child looks to for comfort and companionship when ill or feeling upset. When your family pet gets up in years or becomes sick and is nearing death or dies, walking your child through the grieving process is very important.

Sharing the Loss One of the most difficult parts about losing a pet may be breaking the bad news to your child. Take into consideration your child’s age, maturity level, and life experience in revealing the details. Some therapists recommend if your pet is very old or has an illness, that you consider talking to your child before the death occurs. If you have to make the decision to euthanize your pet, it’s important to explain that the veterinarian has done everything possible, the pet wasn’t going to get better, this is the kindest way you can take away their pain, and the pet will pass peacefully, without pain or being scared. Be careful about using the term “put to sleep,” because depending on the child’s understanding, that could lead them to think the pet will simply wake up when it feels better. If your pet passes suddenly, explain what happened and let their questions lead you to what you disclose.

Lying Isn’t an Option There really aren’t many times when lying is a good choice. Telling your child that “Rex ran away,” or “Max went to a farm,” isn’t a good idea according to therapists. It probably won’t alleviate the sadness about the loss, and if your child finds out you lied, they will be angry in addition to being sad. If your child asks what happens after your pet dies, draw on your own understanding and the viewpoint of your faith.

Coping Together Like anyone dealing with a loss, a child usually feels a variety of emotions besides sadness after the death of a pet. They might experience loneliness, anger or frustration, if your child feels the pet couldn’t get better, or guilt about times that they were mean to or didn’t care for the pet as they should have. Help your child understand that everything they are feeling is normal, and it’s okay to not want to talk and just be sad. Sharing your sadness and showing how you are coping with the loss can be good for your child. If you show that it’s okay to feel sad, to talk about your loss, and to cry when you feel like it, your child is more likely to share their feelings with you. It comforts a child to know they aren’t alone in their loss and pain.

Looking to the Future After the shock of the loss of the pet starts to fade, it’s important to help your child heal and look forward. It can help a child to find special ways to remember the pet. You might have a celebration of life for the pet, plant a tree in the pet’s memory, sit and share stories of what made your pet so very special to each in the family, or you could make a scrapbook of the life of the pet.

Most importantly, talk about your pet, often and with love. Let your child know that while the deep and raw pain will go away, the happy memories of the pet will always remain. When the time is right, consider adopting a new pet, never as a replacement, but as a way to continue the love you have for the pet that died with another one in need of a home.

Handwritten letters contribute to health and happiness. By sharing thoughts with a loved one, your brain activates the processes responsible for sensation, movement control, and thinking. As we design each word, our mind can store the finer details. The result of sharing experiences aids in decision-making and can help foster the process of healing.

Constructing a letter focuses on the present moment, disconnecting us from the world, fears and worries, and, most of all, technology.

Letters are tangible. How often have you tucked an e-mail into a book or kept it for sentimental reasons? Ah, I thought not. Reading a typed font is not personal. Our eyes skim, rather than soak up, each word etched onto a physical object. And, beyond the last word of the e-mail, the physical reminder is soon forgotten.

Countless possessions throughout history are now dust; however, fragile pieces of paper and documents are memorialized in museums and protected for the value of the words.

You know the ones: the old ways involve too many steps and consume precious time. If the excuses were listed out, the result would conclude that handwritten letters are not in line with the conveniences of today. Why wait for the postman when our society thrives on instant gratification But there is an untold and perhaps secret and beneficial side of the conversation. A letter on stationery gives us a sense of nostalgia. A moment to stop, sit down, and absorb the formation of each letter on the envelope before delving into the six or seven pages of intimate communication!

And, just by holding the sheets of paper, you feel the love pouring out of each loop and line.

How many people know the hat boxes stacked in the corner of your bedroom contain beloved paper treasures? Perhaps, you have neat little stacks of envelopes tied with ribbon denoting a particular person in your life. The priceless freehand pictures of birds or stars or stickers are the additional gifts, similar to blown kisses returning to your heart.

You may even love the crisp sound when unfolding the paper, or the slight indentations left behind from the writer and your hand.

The process is magical, from the choice of blue verses on light green stationary, the color of the pen, the careful presentation of particular experiences, the emphasis on neat and steady penmanship and placing the envelope in a mailbox. The act of sending thoughtful words, personal feelings, care, and love is not old-fashioned, but timeless!

Beautiful, elegant penmanship has a romantic quality. No matter when the individual lived, the words are a snapshot revealing a time and place, significant historical events, or a memorable moment spent between family members or friends. It is a record of the details of life and people who are important to us.

To read, one must sit down and pay attention for a few moments.

Sometimes, you can hear the writer’s voice presented through the sentences and paragraphs, and smell a faint fragrance of perfume. And the writer also knows when you will laugh or feel a pang of sadness.

Postcards present a small amount of space, forcing the sender to consider the exact words they wish to convey. With one chance to apply the pen to thin cardboard, the writer understands the value of phrasing the message concisely.

The science of graphology, or in simpler terms, handwriting analysis, can detect more than 5,000 different personality traits based on the clues of word spacing, size, and open versus closed loops of almost every letter in the alphabet. Cursive offers a better understanding of a person. A right- leaning slant indicates the individual is open to the world and enjoys socializing. Letters leaning to the left may reveal a rebellious nature, while perfectly vertical letters indicate that the person is logical, and perhaps guards his or her emotions.

Living in and before the 1980s may guarantee that you possess countless examples of hand-written correspondence. Collecting memorabilia of a long-ago tradition does not have to stop in 2019. Letters are proof of time, love, and care. Take the time today and write a letter to your loved one. The sentiment will touch the deepest soul strings, and, hopefully, cause a reaction.

Send a flower from your garden or draw a bird or a rainbow, just to add a dash of sentimentality. And waiting patiently for the postman is also part of the excitement of sending and receiving love!

It is full of praises and thanks to God (the Lord) for all he has done and all he will do. Today I will ask some questions to help you think about the words above. Talk to whoever is reading with you to see what ideas they have, too. Let’s get started!

Are you hoping for anything right now? It could be something as simple as hoping dinner is really yummy tonight. Or maybe you’re hoping that the meanie at school will stop picking on the other kids.

A shield is for protection. Who or what makes you feel safe? Do you ever help someone else feel safe?

To rejoice means to be joyful or happy. What always puts a smile on your face?

I bet you can name a bunch of things to answer that question!

I’m sure Mom and Dad have told you that you can’t trust everybody all the time. Some people are just plain bad or mean.

You probably trust your best friend to keep your secrets, right?

God’s love is unfailing. That means he never fails. People can make a promise and then not be able to keep it. People let us down or make us sad. They don’t do it on purpose, but that’s how life is sometimes. God always loves us and always does what he says.

Now read that last verse again and let it wrap you up like a warm hug. “Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.” God is good! All the time!

have been blessed with the opportunity to take a few amazing vacations to some pretty magnificent destinations. While I have loved trying new foods, shopping for souvenirs and being able to escape reality for a few days, my favorite thing about these trips has been time spent connecting with nature. Watching a blazing orange sunset over nothing but a vast expanse of ocean, gazing at the full moon in a dark sky and its reflection in the shimmering sea, exploring undersea life with the help of a mask and snorkel and being amazed by the diversity of God’s creation—these are the things that have left a truly lasting impression on my spirit.

The good news is that you and I don’t have to take a trip to a tropical paradise to appreciate what God has created. Just take some time to “unplug” from the noise and look around. Go take a hike on one of the many trails in our area or head to a lake for a few hours and soak in the view. When you take time to appreciate God’s creation and give glory to the Creator, it’s an act of worship and communion with Him. I’ll leave you with this verse on which to reflect it’s from Nehemiah 9 “You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.”

when I’m not sure what to write about, I start searching for a picture to inspire me. And recently, I found this picture of a little boy on a pier. It just spoke to me. With a whisper of innocence, this picture screamed at me the charm and carefree days of a child’s curiosity and inquisitive nature. It reminded me of my son.

As a mother, I wish I had a time machine to go back and enjoy the endless curiosity of my son when he was younger...the boundless energy... the innocence...the feel of a small, trusting hand holding on to mine as we walked through a parking lot or store...

everything we have, and equally as important—trust Him with the things we don’t.

It’s not parenthood itself that made me understand childlike faith. It’s the aftermath of parenthood. Watching my now 21-year-old, who is determined to do his own thing and do it his own way, makes me appreciate from a new perspective how God feels about us.

Just as we expect our children to trust that we won’t give them things that aren’t safe for them, so should we trust that God won’t give us what isn’t safe or good for us. When we embrace childlike faith, we may not understand, but we accept it.

Just as I long for those moments where my son depended on me and trusted me with childish innocence, so does God long for us to put our hand into His. He wants us to trust Him to lead us. To protect us. To love us. To provide for us.

As the popular Chris Tomlin song goes, “You’re a good, good Father…. It’s who You are…. And I am loved

by You….”

That’s the whole point of childlike faith. It’s not about being childish, but about recapturing the innocence that looks to our Heavenly Father for everything we need. To see Him as the all-knowing Redeemer who has good plans for us and will always have our best interests at heart.

Jesus said, “Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

If we believe we have a good, good Father who will give us good things, it’s easy to redirect ourselves back to the days of innocence…before things became so complicated, and before we embraced the temptation of self-reliance.

Our Heavenly Father is good. He gives us what we need and withholds what we shouldn’t have. His plan always surpasses our own. And when we know that and believe that—we have followed Jesus’ instructions to have childlike faith.

Never Forsaking Us

Never has there been a greater model for friendship than Jesus Christ. Jesus was always there when He was needed.

Strong, stable, caring, He touched everyone He met at their own private level of need: • To the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

• To Nicodemus, a Pharisee, e said, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

• To Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

• To the woman accused of adultery, Jesus said, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?

‘No,’ she replied. And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I. Go and sin no more.’”

There are so many more examples of Jesus meeting people at their time of need: healing the man with leprosy, raising the widow’s son who died, feeding the five thousand, and comforting and teaching the disciples with all their confused,

misguided thinking. To those who suffered physical afflictions, Jesus not only spoke, but He also healed. Jesus was a friend to all while He physically walked the earth. The miracle of all miracles is that the Incarnation continues in the lives of His people today. He is still that friend who sticks closer than a brother.

He is a permanent, unchanging friend in a world that steers itself on a wildly swerving collision course with the future. As we immerse ourselves in His boundless love, He gives us the thrill of being surprised by an unspeakable joy. He gives us the courage to reexamine our views. He somehow makes it easy for us to admit that we don’t yet understand a thing. He upsets our tidy, carefully designed prisons and sets before us mansions of grace and beauty.

All the time He is saying, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Right now He wants to help us turn our troubles into triumphs, our failures into faith, and our mental and spiritual paralysis into limitless possibilities for good. He also wants us to be His hands, His feet, His heart to men and women, boys and girls who don’t have a friend—to be there to care when we’re needed most. It’s one of the simplest, yet most profound, principles of all when it comes to learning the fine art of friendship—which is a major tenet of Christianity.

Can we have a unicorn, a tiger, or a dog?” Yes, the request overflowing with angelic pleading and promises may be a question you are currently debating! Animals, as seen on television or playing with a neighborhood child in the yard, create a romantic vision of companionship. Almost 70% of American families have some form of pet in the home. The daunting decision to add one additional responsibility to the daily routine may seem minor compared to the significant bond in ownership. The question most often asked is, “What is the best pet for our family?”

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A PET? Before you make a decision, it is vital to consider what type of pet best suits the family, home, and lifestyle; so, ask yourself: • Do local laws, or your housing arrangement limit your choice of pet?

• Will the pet receive the necessary attention and daily care?

• How much will the pet’s needs cost per month? Is it in my budget?

• Who will be the caretaker of the pet?

• How long will the pet be alone every day?

• Is it possible for the pet to be indoors during extreme temperatures?

• What is the time frame of training?

• Is there a location in the home large enough for the pet’s kennel or cage?

• Does the pet need a fencedin area to run, or is there a safe location to take walks?

FINDING THE RIGHT MATCH Your child’s age can help you determine the appropriate animal. A pet that is active during the night, scratches, or tweets all hours of the day and night may be a questionable choice for young children. A larger breed of canine, or a hamster, guinea pig, ferret, or fish may be an ideal match for younger children.

THE LOYAL COMPANION Are you the type who travels?

Think about how your dog will fit into this picture. water dog may love your family’s adventurous nature. Consider the daily routine of exercise, training, and grooming.

A dog’s greatest need is companionship, and it will spend time with each member of the family. In thinking about a gentle disposition, consider adopting a Golden Retriever, beagle, spaniel, Labrador Retriever, or Basset hound.

While felines have quirks that make them adorable, daily care is essential to their happiness. In addition to feeding, watering, and grooming them, caring for the litter box must be someone’s job!

SWEET BUNNY Surprisingly, rabbits can be litter-box trained, a great appeal in considering adding Thumper to your family!

Rabbits are active and social creatures that need regular exercise (in a contained and safe location) and quiet time.

If you plan to have an indoor pet, you’ll need to bunnyproof, since rabbits love to chew, especially wood. Tasks to consider are daily feeding (including a diet of hay), watering, cleaning out the litter box daily or every third day, and sanitizing their house twice a month.

“FAWKES” Sometimes, the conversation is a letdown. “Yes, darlin’,” we can get a bird, but the mythical

Families seeking a friendly, gentle, and suitable bird as a companion pet may choose a budgie (parakeet), cockatiel, cockatoos, parrotlets, or the sociable giant, a Hyacinth macaw. It’s often easier to bond with an animal who possesses an affectionate disposition. While most birds feel safe within their cage, consider offering your feathered-friend a standalone perch or the ability to fly safely within the home. In addition to feeding them a balanced diet, changing the water, and replacing the papers within their cage, birds enjoy human interaction.

BETTER WITH TWO Everyone needs a friend, including your pet. Animal behaviorists suggest dogs and rabbits thrive socially and need a companion and physical stimulation. With canines, these may prevent obedience issues that occur if a single dog is left alone.

Your family is about to get bigger! Soon, there may be a two or four-legged friend who will keep the children company, teach the value of compassion and responsibility. Whether “Fido,” “Tom,” “Thumper,” or “Fawkes,” he or she may become an essential part of every family occasion, and the quiet, lazy days, too!

For the women and men who hear, “You have breast cancer,” the journey to overcoming this disease is a full-time job and requires physical and emotional support. While you are going through this challenging time, the road to recovery can sometimes become difficult, due to healthcare costs and financial realities. Pretty In Pink oundation, PIP , is a North Carolina-based 501 c 3 non-profit organization that provides uninsured and under-insured breast cancer patients in North Carolina with financial assistance for quality, life-saving, medical treatment. ounded in 2004 by Lisa . Tolnitch M.D., . .C.S, Pretty In Pink Foundation is committed to providing grants to breast cancer patients to help pay for critical treatment. PIPF grants help with surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, insurance co-pays, deductibles, and premiums, as well as COBRA. There are many great organizations involved in the research of breast cancer, but what makes Pretty In Pink Foundation unique is that all monies raised stay in North Carolina to fulfill the organization’s mission, and all grants are paid directly to the medical providers. PIP is the only charity in North Carolina that is focused specifically on providing service after breast cancer diagnosis for medical treatment for the financially disadvantaged. Since serving its first patient in 200 , PIP has supported over 2000 breast cancer patients in the state.

Sayla Nedell recently joined PIP as Business Development Manager to establish a presence in Northwest NC for the organization.

“Our founder, Dr. Lisa Tolnitch, is a surgical oncologist in Raleigh, NC, and in her practice, she saw that patients weren’t completing their treatment plans after surgery because they couldn’t pay for their chemotherapy or radiation; because of this, Dr. Tolnitch founded the organization. Pretty In Pink Foundation’s vision is to ensure that all breast cancer patients in North Carolina receive medical treatment regardless of their ability to pay. 85% of our funds go to patient care and we are wise stewards of every penny we receive. Our patient coordinator works first to get medical bills reduced and then we pay the providers, taking the worry of dealing with money and bills out of the patient’s hands. Our medical financial assistance covers surgery, chemo, radiation, office co-pays, co-insurance, insurance premiums and deductibles and COBR premiums,” said Sayla. The work of PIPF is only possible through the donations of individuals and businesses across the state.

“None of what we do would be possible without the ongoing support of our donors. monthly donation of 25 per month covers the cost of filling and mailing a Comfort Care Bag; 50 per month covers a co-pay for a Champion; and 100 per month covers a chemo treatment. On average, most breast cancer patients require 30 rounds of chemo. We make a measurable impact, and 90% of our Champions can become survivors with early detection and timely medical treatment. All donations stay in North Carolina to treat those in our communities who are in need. The average grant to a Champion is 2500- 3500. We receive no state or federal funding, so recurring donations are critical to what we are doing,” Sayla commented. Pretty In Pink Foundation also has a program, Beyond the Ribbon (™), which provides resources, bras, prosthetics, wigs, and Comfort Care Bags at no cost to any North Carolina breast cancer patient.

Pretty In Pink Foundation hopes to raise awareness of not only the costs of cancer treatments and the financial toll it can take on a person or family, but also their organization through their upcoming fundraisers.

How

many kids, when asked what they want to be when they grow up, say they want to be a firefighter ccording to statistics, being a firefighter is the second-most wished-for career; a professional athlete was first.

Given the fact that volunteer firefighters are a large percentage of the nation’s total number of firefighters, many kids must actually pursue that dream.

What are the general requirements to be a volunteer firefighter The criteria to be a volunteer firefighter vary by department and or by state. The basic expectations generally include: You • Must be 18 years old or older; • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; • Must successfully pass the written and physical exams; • Must pass the drug screening test; • Must pass a background check; • May be expected to be certified as an mergency Medical Technician; • May be required to have a valid driver’s license; • May be required to live within the area supported by that fire station.

Competency skills include demonstrated decision-making skills, dependability, and bravery. With people counting on volunteers to protect them and their property, personal dedication and integrity are highly valued, along with the commitment of the time necessary to function at the highest level.

Time commitment is a necessity, as approximately 110 hours of training is required. In fact, training is a continual process for most

firefighters. Initial training includes classroom and practical instruction. Volunteers learn how to use fire fighting tools effectively and efficiently, such as ladders, hoses, extinguishers, axes, etc. They also receive instruction in fire prevention, hazardous materials, and performance of emergency medical techniques. mergency Medical Technician training includes experience in emergency room and ambulance techniques and the successful passing of written and practical tests administered by either a state-certified board or the National Registry of MTs. s with many positions, volunteer firefighters usually go through a probationary period, which may be up to four years.

Ready to volunteer The first steps to becoming a volunteer firefighter include • Contacting a local volunteer fire department; • Submitting an application; • Participating in the training program.

According to WRAL.com, approximately 72% of North Carolina’s firefighters are volunteers. On a national level, the National ire Protection ssociation’s 2015 statistics indicated that there were 1.1 million firefighters in the US, with 70% of that number classified as volunteers. In that same year, of the 29,727 fire departments nationwide, 19,7 2 were all-volunteer stations. Since so many areas across the country depend solely on volunteers to support their communities, these dedicated volunteers provide a valued service to their friends and neighbors.

DEFINING WHAT IS CERTIFIED ORGANIC? label of “USD Organic” or “Certified Organic” is a seal which promises the product contains 95% of its ingredients free of synthetic additives, chemical fertilizers, and dyes, and was processed without industrial solvents or genetic engineering. (The total amount of pesticides found in organic foods is roughly 7% compared to 38% in conventionally-farmed produce.)

are important! One word boosted the total food sales by 5.9% in 2018 to reach 47.9 billion “organic.”

The difficulty for consumers lies in this label, dominating the market place with confusing variations, such as “Certified Organic,” “100% Organic,” “Made with Organic Ingredients,” and “Organic.” How can buyers thus differentiate between product healthfulness within a regulated organic standard? On the one hand, shoppers can buy two types of apples, both grown in an orchard and stamped “organic.” In the cereal aisle, due to the growing demand for nutritious foods offering a higher revenue, boxes line the shelves with “organic,” “gluten-free,” and “nonGMO” options. The “organic” label suggests a product is healthy, but is it?

WHAT DOES ORGANIC MEAN? A while ago, a movement gained traction to produce products made from organically produced raw materials. Farmers, to obtain USD -accreditation monitored by the National Organic Program, NOP, had to maintain detailed records in fulfilling a list of food-growing or livestock-raising requirements up to the process of processing, packaging, and labeling. Organic crop and livestock farming practices now have to meet the following goals. They must: • Provide safe, natural, and healthy livestock habitats; • Supply animals with 100% organic feed and forage without the administration of antibiotics or hormones; • Enhance soil and water quality; • Promote a self-sustaining cycle of resources; • Use USD approved natural and synthetic pesticides.

PRACTICES EXCLUDE: • Adding synthetic or sewage fertilizers to the soil; • Genetic engineering; • Antibiotics or growth hormones for livestock.

WHAT IS 100% ORGANIC? Eighty-two percent of Americans feel tricked by nutrition labels, while 44% believe brand names mislead consumers as a means to sell the product. Questioning the label only partially assists the curious shopper.

“100% organic” is a falsified label. The product needs to contain only a minimum of 70% natural ingredients, and the remaining 30% simply cannot be foods or processed with additives on an exclusion list. The product and the means of processing must follow a specific requirement criterion to receive the USD Organic seal.

WHAT DOES “MADE WITH ORGANIC INGREDIENTS” MEAN? The value in reading labels is that they may list up to three ingredients or food groups on the front panel that comprise less than 70% organic. In such cases, comparative shoppers will not find a USD Organic seal on the package or a claim of organic certification.

AFFILIATION TO ORGANIC LABELING consumer needs to look first at the label and read carefully, especially if it includes the words “natural,” “non-GMO,” and kosher.” These words may be a marketing ploy to boost purchases.

• With “gluten-free” foods, scan the ingredients to see if GMOs made the list. Corn, for instance, may contain a deadly insecticide termed “BT toxin.” Check that all “gluten-free” items have a seal declaring them as “certified non-GMO.” • The “kosher” certification relates only to the preparation and process of the ingredients, and not the use of GMOs. • Be aware of the countries listed on a product. Chinese produce, for instance, consistently has a higher percentage of heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, and mercury, than competing produce grown in America. While the FDA conducts contaminant tests on imported foods, the percentage may qualify as too low to result in a short-term health risk. Salmonella and E. coli are two polluting contaminates found on a restricted list.

SAFE FOODS Termed the “Clean 15,” the following fruits and vegetables have a low risk for pesticides; therefore, you do not need to buy if labeled “organic”: asparagus, avocado, eggplant, cabbage, cantaloupe, grapefruit, kiwi, mango mushrooms, onion, papaya, pineapple, sweet corn, sweet peas, and sweet potato.

MEET YOUR FARMERS Farmers’ markets and small local farms can assure you of their procedure for raising grass-fed cows or growing natural produce. When visiting the farm, you can see pastures and gardens firsthand. Whether you decide to join a co-op, purchase shares in a farm, or buy produce or meats directly from a farmer, the means for eating nutritious foods are nearby.

It is not always about the word “organic.” The goal is to buy quality foods that you can trust. And, investing in a farmer or a person who holds high food standards is the ultimate goal!

Too Invested in Television?

atching television is good entertainment, right? Especially in today’s time, with television shows that span many social groups, cultures, religions, and circumstances. With so many different representations, there is a television show for every individual to identify with, whether it is fiction or reality.

But can such a leisure pursuit have our minds and emotions too involved, to the point where we feel as though we live to watch our favorite shows?

To the same degree, when we watch television shows that contain characters with more interesting lives than our own, we become guilty of vicarious living—living through other people for personal fulfillment. We feel those characters’ joy from success, and pain due to heartbreak as our own (on the plus side, though, this can help us develop empathy for others, but too much of anything is unhealthy).

TOO EMOTIONALLY INVOLVED? It seems today that people are glued to television shows more than ever before.

Why? Perhaps it’s because of the current trends and the political climate that give way to controversial television shows.

Perhaps it’s because the dynamics of some shows parallel the times we’re living in, making them more relatable.

Perhaps because it’s giving more cultures, subgroups, and demographics a light and a platform. Perhaps it’s because there are more attractive faces on television that we just cannot look away from. Or, simply, it’s because the drama is getting more exciting and the coarse language more unapologetic (which, unfortunately, brings in more viewers). Television is competing with the excitement of real life, and right now it’s winning.

Just as avid readers become so immersed in a novel that they become emotionally attached to fictional characters, passionate television lovers become quite attached to their favorite characters as well. When this happens, we allow our emotional contentment to rely upon whether that beloved character succeeds or fails at the end of each episode.

When we watch our favorite shows, we likely go through many emotions. And with television being much more entertaining and intense now, we invest more energy.

For instance, watching a drama series with a terminally ill character will leave

WHAT ARE WE MISSING? Those who are too emotionally involved in fictional televised lives are likely missing out on finding the same fulfillment in their own lives. I personally like to say, “It’s a job to keep up with television nowadays!” I say this because television producers create so much addictive entertainment with many intense shows running during the same season. Today’s television gives us so much excitement, drama, plots, and characters to follow and keep up with, and we are the ones who make the decision whether or not to engage in it.

When it comes to watching television, most of us struggle with “FOMO”—the “Fear Of

Missing Out.” We may feel as though we’re missing out on the most hyped- up scenes and plots when we miss an episode, but what we are really missing out on is what is going on in the world. Television can distract us from real life happenings that require our attention and action.

POWER OFF! There are ways to “power off” and lessen our emotional involvement with television: • Watch only what you need to, not what you want to. It’s hard to discern the difference, but there are television shows that are more entertaining, while others are more informative and practical. For instance, sitcoms and sports are more entertaining, while talk shows and news channels are more informative.

• Remove all TV influences from your smart devices, such as the YouTube app and Netflix. No “TV dinners.” Make dinner a time for social connection, not television scoping.

• Try not to wake up watching television or fall asleep with it on. This is the quickest way to develop the habit; also falling asleep with the TV on makes us more tired in the morning.

Just think, “If my life were a TV show, would anyone want to watch it?” This question will make you reflect on what you are missing out on in your life. Are you the main agent of your life, or does television do the job? You choose where your emotional involvement goes.

bsessive-Compulsive Disorder, commonly referred to as OCD, is known as a neurobiological disturbance that seems to run in families. The American Academy of Pediatrics found that about one-third to one-half of the cases began in childhood and adolescence. They named traits of OCD as excessively washing hands or brushing teeth, repeating certain rituals, checking things repeatedly or being concerned with germs, dirt, disease or crime in a dramatic way. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains it is officially considered obsessive-compulsive disorder when kids have unwanted thoughts that cause them to do behaviors frequently which take up more than an hour of the day, and which interfere with their normal activities and make them upset.

The thoughts are the obsessions, and the behaviors are the compulsions.

Sometimes obsessive-compulsive disorder is hard to diagnose, because it can be embarrassing or hidden. It can happen to anyone, and the cause is unclear, though some studies show that health problems during pregnancy can increase the likelihood of having obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is important to know how to recognize it, so you can take appropriate action. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has listed some hallmark signs, such as: • Having repeated and unwanted thoughts, images or impulses that cause anxiety or distress; • Having to think about or say something repeatedly; • Having to do or repeat a task over and over, for example, making sure that a door is locked; • Having to do something repeatedly according to certain “rules.”

Kids with obsessive-compulsive disorder think their intentions are good and that their repeated actions will help prevent bad things from happening. The reality is, the behavior has nothing to do with “bad things happening.” It is a common misconception that the disorder has to do with cleaning or being tidy. It can involve extreme cleaning, of course, but it occurs more often when a person is focused on something that they have to do repeatedly. It has nothing to do with being organized.

Treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder starts by sitting down with your doctor or a mental health professional. When you know what to expect, it can help make the visit go smoother, such as: • Being evaluated to see if the anxiety relates to a past traumatic event; • Being evaluated to see if the fears are rooted in any thoughts or beliefs; • Seeing if anxiety or depression are co-occurring.

You can then expect to follow a plan that may include behavior therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or medication. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is about turning negative thoughts into more positive ones and changing your thinking. Medication should always be taken as prescribed. Family members, teachers, and other staff at school will need to understand what the plan entails and be supportive, in order for it to be the most effective. You will also want to learn as much about obsessive-compulsive disorder as you can, and do your best to be supportive without participating in any compulsions or rituals.

Negotiate, set limits, and continue to carry out a normal family life. Some families choose to make contracts and set goals that their kids can attain, which will make them feel accomplished in spite of the obsessive-compulsive disorder.

At the same time, make sure everyone in your home has “alone time” as well.

Sometimes it can be harmful if the person with obsessive-compulsive disorder does not have time to themselves.

You want to be a teammate and not make your child feel isolated if he has obsessive-compulsive disorder. This means recognizing that any change, even if positive, can be interpreted as stressful, which is when the disorder flares up. Instead of expecting your child to get over it, be empathetic and tell him you understand why symptoms may be worsening because he is going through changes. When you are encouraging and validate how he feels, you can make a difference. Consider that everyone with obsessive-compulsive disorder is different, and so is the severity. The International OCD Foundation says to measure progress according to your child’s own level of functioning and not to that of others—and to be patient. They also suggest recognizing small improvements by giving reassurance and motivation. It is possible to lead a healthy life with obsessive-compulsive disorder when you find ways to manage it.

you noticed that an open discussion about joint pain often leads to the topic of CBD oil? Even with the media and your nextdoor neighbor, work colleagues, and cousin spouting off their feel-good results, not everyone is willing to board the bandwagon. A pregnant pause of hesitation before an answer can lead us to a feeling of uncertainty and questions.

ARE HEMP AND MARIJUANA THE SAME? Taxonomically, hemp and marijuana are the same plants. They both have the same distinctive leaves and smell similarly. Tetrahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive substance found in cannabis; however, hemp plants contain only 0.3 percent (dry weight).

A person cannot become high on hemp.

ARE FARMERS GROWING HEMP IN NC? The conversation began in 2014 among the NC General Assembly, who created a Farm Bill to establish an “Industrial Hemp Pilot program” for farmers. Laws soon after defined who could participate; yet, by June of 2019, the rules promoted statewide farming. In assessing the broad appeal of the crop, textiles and industrial processes would benefit from the strong and durable fiber used to make rope, canvas and paper, clothing, fabric, and other forms of textiles. While cotton is a softer fabric, hemp is water-absorbent, which allows the fiber to be dyed and retain its color better than any other material.

OTHER PURPOSES: • Hemp seeds are a source of grains producing essential amino acids, and beneficial to the food industry.

• The oil also can create ink and be an additive to detergents.

Our crops now use 95% of the flowers for the extraction of oil.

IS USING CBD OIL SAFE? Based on the low percentage of tetrahydrocannabinol, there is no current evidence to support abuse or a dependency potential from the use of pure CBD. Similar to any new supplement or medication, it is wise to consider the list of possibilities of adverse reactions. Although CBD is generally well-tolerated and listed as “safe,” it is sold as a supplement, which is not FDA regulated for purity or safety. The side effects include diarrhea, change in appetite, fatigue, and irritability.

Additionally, CBD is known to: • raise your blood levels of certain medications.

friends, work colleagues, and neighbors are touting the positive benefits in reducing pain. Whether applied as a topical or consumed as a tincture or in pill form, CBD appears magical. Scientifically, CBD interacts with receptors in your brain and immune system to prevent the body from absorbing a compound, called anandamide, which regulates the amount of pain a person feels. By reducing inflammation levels, Cannabidiol can help those who experience insomnia, specific immune-system responses, and issues related to the joints. In test subjects with arthritis, for example, researchers provided a topical CBD gel across four days. The findings noted a significant drop in the signs of pain, including inflammation.

SURPRISING RESULTS Two rare and severe epileptic syndromes, Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut, manifest during early childhood and impact the lives of approximately 450,000 children and three million adults. HOW TO BUY QUALITY CBD Read the label thoroughly and buy products only manufactured in the United States. If the product offers “hemp seed oil,” it may be beneficial only as a moisturizer, and will not contain CBD. A reliable company also will offer the whole spectrum, which uses the entire plant.

a tattoo is not a decision that should be made overnight. Most importantly, you want to know where you are going and what you are using to decorate your skin. The Food and Drug Administration said that there is no surefire way to tell if ink is safe, and an ink can be contaminated even if the container is sealed or the label says the product is sterile. The best thing you can do is avoid using any do-it-yourself tattoo kits and go to a tattoo parlor that follows the state and local laws. North Carolina General Statute 130A-283 states that tattooing is regulated in our state and nobody can tattoo without obtaining a license. Every state is different, such that Nevada has no laws regarding body art and at least 45 states have laws prohibiting minors from tatting.

You want to thoroughly understand what getting a tattoo entails and make sure you are still on board.

While it can be a great form of self-expression, it is not for everyone. The procedure is as follows: • Select or design the art you want; • Have the art stenciled on the skin;

Being prepared means getting educated and then asking questions. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests going down a checklist before following through with your decision to ink, which includes: • Making sure you are current on immunizations including hepatitis B and tetanus; • Inquiring about the shop’s process of tattooing; • Seeing that equipment is sterilized and the shop is clean; • Seeing that the tattoo artist washes his hands and wears disposable gloves; • Making sure you watch the tattoo artist open the pack of needles in front of you so you see they are new; • Making sure extra ink is never poured back into the bottle and reused; • Planning where you will get medical care if the tattoo becomes infected or you have any problems.

Once you are home, a new tattoo requires some extra love and attention. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggested several key actions to take once you are home, including:

• Clean skin with antiseptic and place ointment on the site;

• Keeping the bandage on for 24 hours and then washing with soap and warm water;

• Inject pigmented ink with a needle;

• Keeping the skin moist with antibiotic ointments or vitamin E oil a few times a day;

• Blood or fluid is wiped away.

Depending on the size and detail involved, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several sessions for the tattoo to be complete.

Some people may have adverse reactions or negative side effects to the tattoo. There are simple measures to take if you feel you have developed an infection or bad reaction to the tattoo: • Contact your doctor; • Inform the tattoo artist so he can identify the ink and not use it again; • Inquire about the brand, color and batch number on the ink to figure out the source of the problem and the best course of action for treatment; • Tell the Food and Drug Administration about the ink, your reaction, and the outcome.

• Avoiding sun exposure and sunscreen for about two weeks while the tattoo is healing; • Avoiding swimming and long baths for a few weeks; • Not wearing clothes that adhere to the tattoo.

The decision can be reversible, though it is not without pain or damage. Research is still revealing the short and long-term consequences of how pigments break down after laser treatment. Permanent scarring is also possible and you will not be able to restore the skin to its original condition. If you are able to accept the process of getting a tattoo and the possible rewards and risks that come along with it, ink may be for you.

Hints You Are No Longer “Mommy”

remember the day well when my soon-to-be ’tween asked if she could now call me “Mom” instead of “Mommy.” I had known this day would eventually come, but I was shocked at how it hit me.

6. You can never shop for their clothes without them anymore.

Apparently, at the time, all her friends were calling their parents “Mom” and “Dad,” and she had been wanting to ask me this for quite some time. I think it’s precious that she asked for my permission. She knows me too well and realized I might get upset, or say no. Of course, I didn’t say no, but I definitely counter-argued why she might be rushing into something, and that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea.

I lost the debate and have to admit she presented a good defense.

8. Whatever happened to nightmares? Do they still have them? They rarely come to your bedside in the middle of the night for comfort anymore.

Maybe you’ve had the same conversation with your child too. Let’s agree there is never a good time for that question to come up, but we all know it’s inevitable.

In no particular order, here are 25 sure signs you might be outgrowing the “Mommy” stage…

1. You reach for their hand when crossing a busy parking lot, and they make you hold their wrist or forearm.

2. You are now only allowed to kiss their foreheads, or the top of their heads, in public.

3. They no longer want you to walk them to their classroom—heck, they barely let you enter the school anymore.

4. You used to know every detail of their day at school; now you rarely know what goes on inside those walls.

5. When they fall down and get hurt, they just glance at you—they don’t run to you.

7. There are maybe one or two aisles left in the toy section where you could actually find something they will like.

9. You have no idea when your child poops, and you’re OK with that. You just trust it happens.

10. It’s next to impossible to figure out a venue for a birthday party. You’ve either had a party at every available location, or all these once-favorite locations are for “babies” now, or so your child says.

11. The amount of “stuff” you give during the holidays and at birthdays is half of what you used to give, yet you are spending twice as much.

12. Gone are the easy, relaxing school mornings. Now it’s filled with you scrambling, getting them out of the bathrooms and away from the mirrors, and out the door two hours earlier than you’d like.

13. Gone are the easy, relaxing afternoons after school. Now it’s crunch time to fit in homework, dinner and an afterschool activity, or two or three!

14. They tell YOU how to figure out their math homework problems.

15. Your child is now your first source of help with electronics around your home.

16. There is no need to have eyes on them

every second of the day because they actually understand their boundaries.

17. Your weekends and calendars fill up weeks and months in advance—and none of these activities are for you or your significant other.

18. You used to look forward to their bedtime so you could sneak a few hours of “me-time.” Now you tend to go to bed at the same time they do.

19. You are no longer sleep deprived. Yay! Instead, you actually look forward to waking before they do just to get in some “calm before the storm.”

20. Chores are not given out to build character and responsibility anymore.

Now they’re essential jobs to help you keep your house running.

21. You sometimes are asked to stand in the hallway during parts of your child’s pediatric check-ups.

22. Going to the pool with the kids is literally a time to relax. That’s what lifeguards are for anyway, right?

23. You can actually read a book now!

24. Your funny faces, dances, and jokes are no longer amusing. They are now an embarrassment.

25. The coded words and expressions you share with your husband are all too familiar and are easily decoded.

I know this sounds depressing, but I have noticed that – no matter what these hints prove, or how soon they want to start calling you “Mom”—you will still be “Mommy” in their hearts for much longer than they will ever care to admit!

Keep your little ghouls and goblins satisfied with these hearty, spooky eats!

EASY JACK-O-LANTERN CHICKEN QUESADILLAS INGREDIENTS: Cooking spray 2 cups rotisserie chicken, shredded ¼ cup lime juice ½ pkg taco seasoning 8 medium flour tortillas ¾ cup Cheddar cheese, shredded ¾ cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded 1 Tbsp. olive oil DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 425°F and grease a large baking sheet with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, add chicken and toss with lime juice and taco seasoning.

3. With a pairing knife, cut a jack-o-lantern face into 4 of the tortillas.

4. Place the 4 uncut tortillas onto the baking sheet. Sprinkle with the chicken and cheese. Top with the jack-olantern tortillas.

5. Brush with olive oil and bake until the cheese is melty and the tortillas are golden, about 15 minutes.

6. Serve with guacamole or hot sauce.

MINI-MUMMY MEATLOAF INGREDIENTS: ¾ lb. yellow potatoes 2 large eggs 2 lbs. ketchup 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce ½ cup Italian panko or plain bread crumbs 2 cloves garlic 1 medium carrot (diced) ¾ lb. ground beef ½ lb. ground pork 12 grape tomatoes ¾ cup sour cream (low-fat) 24 oz. peas Salt and pepper DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat oven to 375° F and line a muffin tin with foil liners. Place the potatoes into a pot, cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Add 1 tsp. salt, reduce heat, and simmer until just tender, about 15-18 minutes.

2. While the potatoes cook, in a bowl, combine the eggs, ketchup, Worcestershire, ½ tsp. salt and ¼ tsp. pepper. Stir in the breadcrumbs, garlic and carrots.

Mix in the beef and pork until incorporated. Divide the meat mixture among the foil liners and press a tomato into the center of each and cover with meat.

Bake until a thermometer inserted reads 155°F, about 14-16 minutes.

3. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the sour cream and ¼ tsp. salt and beat with mixer until very smooth. Transfer to a pastry bag fitted with a ½-inch ribbon tip. Transfer the meat loaves to a platter and pipe the potatoes back and forth in a slightly crisscross pattern to resemble a mummy’s wrapping. Place 2 green peas near the top to resemble mummy eyes.

JACK-O-LANTERN STUFFED PEPPERS INGREDIENTS: 4 bell peppers, orange 1 lb. ground beef 1 c. white rice 1 c. chicken stock, divided 1 (15 oz.) can fire-roasted tomatoes 1 onion, finely chopped 1 c. Monterey Jack, shredded 2 garlic cloves, minced Olive oil Salt and pepper DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut off the top of each pepper and set aside. Remove the core and seeds. With a sharp paring knife, carve a jack-o-lantern face into each pepper.

2. Drizzle the inside of each pepper with olive oil and generously season with salt and pepper. In a large baking dish, place peppers upright with the pepper tops.

3. In a large nonstick skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil and sauté the onions until soft, about 5 minutes.

Add garlic and cook about 30 seconds. Add beef and cook through, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon. Turn off the heat and drain the fat.

4. Return the skillet to the stovetop over medium heat.

Stir in the chili powder and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the fire-roasted tomatoes, ½ cup chicken stock, cooked rice and ¾ cup of cheese. Stir until combined.

5. Spoon the beef rice mixture into the peppers and top with cheese.

6. Pour the remaining chicken stock into pan. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and cook another 10 minutes, until peppers are tender and the cheese is melted. Place tops on the peppers and serve.

Pumpkin Streusel Muffins

BY SARA WILES Pumpkin spice and everything nice! The base of this recipe is simple and can make a classic pumpkin muffin if you would like. But add the amazing streusel topping that bakes into the top of the muffins and turns a gorgeous golden brown for added yumminess. The muffin is so warm and moist, mostly thanks to the applesauce, and the streusel topping provides a little crunch. Make a double batch and celebrate the new season with your friends, co-workers and neighbors. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS: 2½ cups all-purpose flour ½ cup rolled oats 4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1½ cups pumpkin puree 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup white sugar 2 /3 cup vegetable oil ½ cup applesauce 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

FOR THE STREUSEL TOPPING: ¼ cup packed brown sugar 2 Tablespoons butter, softened 2 Tablespoons rolled oats 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease or line 18 muffin cups with paper liners.

2. Combine 2½ cups flour, ½ cup oats, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl. Whisk pumpkin puree, 1 cup brown sugar, white sugar, vegetable oil, applesauce, eggs and vanilla extract together in a large separate bowl.

Stir flour mixture into pumpkin mixture; mix until just incorporated.

3. Beat ¼ cup brown sugar with butter in a bowl until creamy and smooth. Whisk 2 tablespoons oats and 2 tablespoons flour, using a fork, into sugar-butter mixture until streusel topping is crumbly.

4. Pour batter into prepared muffin tin. Sprinkle each muffin with streusel topping.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 25-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted into the middle of the muffin comes out clean. Let cool on a cooling rack and enjoy!
