You’re overwhelmed with emotions and full of uncertainty. Medical terms are flying around, but you’re not sure what choice to make. The idea of hospice care comes up. And with it, fear. A fear that it means there are no choices left.

The name change was a collaborative effort that took countless hours, focus groups, and much soul-searching by staff, families, donors, and supporters of the organization. “So much thought went into our new name,” disclosed Ann. “It was the collective effort of many to create an identity that represented who we are, what we do, where we’ve been, and where we’re going. A trellis is a beautiful reflection of the framework of support we provide.”

“Hospice care is not the type of thing people pre-plan for,” admitted Karen. “By differentiating our name, we hope that Triad families will recognize our comprehensive support and a full menu of services without the intimidation of the term ‘hospice.’”

Though hospice care is still at the heart of what Trellis Supportive Care does, it’s not something to be feared. It’s something to be embraced for the peace of mind and instant relief you feel, knowing you’ve made the best choice for compassionate care.

Brings The Big Fit and Mission 5K to Winston-Salem

When

you think about helping the needy, it is easy to think about providing food or clothing, but what about shoes? It might not be your first thought, but they are necessary to protect our feet, and they are a really important part of keeping people healthy.

Luckily, Mission: Feet First is working to provide access to comfortable, well-fitting shoes for everyone in our community.

Started in 2010 by Emily and Keith Davis, owners of Fleet Feet, Mission: Feet First was created to address the need for shoes in the local homeless population. They found that in cases where returned shoes were unsellable, they didn’t have a great outlet to reuse them, so the shoes were being donated to oodwill. They decided they could fill a direct need in the community by working with local nonprofits, like The Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, to get these shoes to people who really needed them. They bought a trailer and, eventually, a second trailer to organize the inventory and had them retrofitted so they could keep things in place as they took the inventory all over the community to service this need. Over time, they discovered that they could make an even bigger impact by focusing on children as well. By working with Title One Schools, they started to see how important this really was. Since 2010, they have been able to blend their passion for good fitting shoes with their love of helping those in need. Mission eet irst has grown to the point that every year they fit more than 1,000 people for new shoes. “We step up and provide shoes whenever we are asked, and there is a true need,” said Emily. They rely solely on donations to keep their inventory stocked.

This fall, they took their mission one step further by providing 800 children with new running shoes for school. The Big Fit took place the week of September 10th and provided shoes for children in eight schools between Davidson and Forsyth Counties. “For a number of years, I’ve had this vision of fitting tons of kids for new shoes to get them ready for the new school year,” said avis. “When we fit in-need kids for shoes, we see kids wearing shoes way too short, too big and shoes that are very worn out. Many of these kids wear a sibling’s hand-medowns because there are no financial resources to get a new pair. That’s where we come in.”

The Inaugural Big Fit event was funded by Raise Them Well, locally owned by Emily & Wiggy Saunders, and Aubrey & Holli Linville, founders of the AJ Linville Foundation.

On November 3, 2018, Mission: Feet First is partnering with The Winston-Salem Rescue Mission for the 7th Annual Mission 5K. This event prides itself on being the most Christianbased 5K in town. There will be motivational Scriptures all along the course and WBFJ music at the finish line. The heart of this event is really about joy. y working with the Rescue Mission, they motivate the men in residence there to prove to themselves that they can achieve something if they put their mind to it. “All the men at the mission are given the opportunity to register for the race at no cost, and we fit them with shoes a month prior to the race. These men carry the burden of their backgrounds, and when they complete the race, they are beaming with pride that they were able to see their achievement,” said Davis.

They also work with Ainsley’s Angels to provide able-bodied runners to push mentally and physically disabled children through the course in specialized strollers. “Seeing these children so elated is a great joy!” Davis continued. There is a 5K walk, a 5K run and a one-mile fun run. You also won’t want to miss the post-race expo with food, music and fellowship. Eddie McLaurin has hundreds of children, and they’re all real “monsters”! That’s because every Halloween season for the past 26 years, Eddie has recruited and employed young people to dress up in scary attire and help him entertain the thousands of patrons who come to visit Woods of Terror in Greensboro. In addition to the monsters, Eddie employs scores of folks to work behind the scenes, doing everything from makeup to construction.

“I was never blessed with children of my own, so that’s why I like to surround myself with young folks who share my passion for bringing joy to others,” said Eddie.

Many performers and technicians keep coming back year after year, while others move on to other adventures.

“I still hear from most of the folks who have worked for me, and they bring me up to speed on what’s going on in their lives; like one guy who overcame some personal pro lems, got his and is doing fine now, said Eddie. “It’s gratifying to know that I might have played a small role in helping my kids get some direction in their lives.”

Eddie stands 6’2” in street clothes and about a half a foot taller than that when dressed up as “Bone Daddy,” the popular snake-adorned star of Woods of Terror. But, in or out of costume, he strikes an imposing figure. e s like a father, school principal, employer and counselor all rolled into one, who instills a solid work ethic in his kids, teaches them how to handle their finances and sets an e ample for how to serve others. In fact, as much as Eddie does for his monsters, he also does a lot for the community.

or e ample, each year, ddie hosts a Trunk or Treat event for kids with MS. He has also held fundraising events for breast cancer awareness. And, on any given day, he might provide shelter for a homeless person or rescue a dog.

“Not everyone is lucky enough to have grown up in a caring environment like I did or grow up healthy as I did,” said Eddie. “That’s why it’s important for me to give back to the community whenever I can.”

restaurant business is a hard one to be successful in, let alone have a long run as a favorite of loyal customers. But for Clemmons Kitchen, in business since 1977, customers continue to come from far and wide for good, home-style cooking, including breakfast any time of the day, delicious menu items like spaghetti, and some of the best homemade desserts around…plus some pretty awesome iced tea!

When Gus Tsatsaronis, Johnny Ballas and Gus Strates opened the restaurant in 1977 on Clemmons Road, there wasn’t much of anything else in Clemmons, NC. Not the hustle and bustle we have now, just a rural area in need of a restaurant, and Clemmons Kitchen became a favorite quickly. In fact, the only places to eat in Clemmons in those days were McDonald’s and Clemmons Kitchen. The population in Clemmons in the late ’70s was around 3,000, and today that number is nearly 20,000!

An American Dream At the age of 17, Gus Tsatsaronis, current co-owner, came to the United States from his homeland of Greece with his two friends Johnny Ballas and us Strates, and got his “first taste” of the restaurant business working for the Grecian Corner in Winston-Salem for three years, later opening Clemmons Kitchen at the age of 20 with his two friends. After growing up at Clemmons Kitchen, Bobby is now the co-owner with his dad and, like his dad, definitely has a love of owning a restaurant.

Gus’ love for what he does is simple. “I have always enjoyed cooking even on my days off at my home, trying out new things, which has helped my dishes at Clemmons Kitchen. It makes my day when customers say they enjoy my recipes. I would have to say the smiles and compliments I’ve been getting every day for all these years has made me love my job even more, and before I realized it, I’d been here 41 years. It’s a great feeling,” Gus commented. Several of Clemmons Kitchen’s most popular menu items are family recipes, and desserts are homemade either on-site or at the home of a baker. The old-fashioned coconut cake has always been a customer favorite.

“My dad wanted me to go to college and told me that the restaurant business is a lot of hours, a lot of stress, but I didn’t want to do anything else.

I’ve learned so much from my dad since I was raised in the business and our

employees are like my family. I’ve worked with my dad and made our father-son relationship even stronger, spending all those hours together, and I wouldn’t have done anything differently,” admitted Bobby. The “Clemmons Kitchen family” includes 50 plus employees, some who have been with the restaurant for over 40 years, like hostess Peggy James, and several cooks who have been there for over 25 years!

Loyal Customers Make All the Difference There aren’t many restaurants that you can eat at 2-3 times a week and always get something different, but Clemmons Kitchen’s menu has a variety of items from “breakfast all day,” to pasta dishes, to sandwiches and vegetables. “Our best sellers would probably be the squash; breakfast is always popular no matter the time of day. the daughter of two teachers, Lori Goins Clark knew early on how important a good, quality education was in succeeding in life.

Growing up, Lori attended schools in the Winston-Salem orsyth County School system, graduating from West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, NC, then attending UNC Chapel Hill, graduating with a BA in music and a Spanish Language minor. Throughout her high school and college years, Lori not only focused on her academics, but she was active in sports, service clubs and musical theatre, becoming a well-rounded student. Lori is a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church and has worked in youth choir, women’s worship and missions ministries. Professionally, she has worked in sales for an IBM partner company, ateway, Chick-fil-a and eautycounter. ut no role in her life has been more important than that of wife to Dale and mom to son Cameron, 14. “My parents, as educators, instilled in me an appreciation for teaching and education. My mother also served on the school board for many years, and she had begun to consider who could fill her seat. Much of my life, I have volunteered in some capacity, and I saw this job as a natural progression from those activities.

With my son Cameron in the local school system, having come through the same area schools myself, and after doing some substitute teaching, the conviction to run for the board became clear. As a mom today, I feel like I share many common values with other parents in our district. I parent, I work on my marriage, I self-evaluate in all of my roles, I do day-to-day life, I work, I attend church, have a strong faith and struggle trying to figure out dinner at the last minute, too! I live in ‘REAL-ville,’ and I use that shared-value lens to help me as I think through board policies and issues.

We should all care about our district’s success. because 90% of students across the country will attend public schools.

As I seek re-election to a second term in District 2 for the WSFC school board, my focus continues to be on keeping school choice, local control versus state or federal, and teacher compensation,” said Lori. In her fourth year of serving, being on the school board has brought many blessings and even more appreciation for those who work in the system.

“Since my first days on the school board, we try to end the week with ‘Fun Fridays,’ which are school visits, and it’s the best part of the job! I witness learning happening in real-time and meet teachers who understand their mission and impact. I am one voice of nine on the board. Keeping those kids first and having a seek first to

understand’ attitude both help me to stay focused on goals and addressing issues,” Lori commented. Those issues include teacher shortage and pay, preparing students for life following school and supporting neighborhood schools and our Choice plan.

TEACHERS DO MUCH MORE THAN TEACH “The teacher shortage is a major issue. I believe society doesn’t value the profession and we don’t pay them enough. We ask them to do much more than teach. One way to remedy this is to increase pay for new and veteran teachers. This school board has made increasing our local teacher supplement a priority issue. Society depends upon the schools to help ready a young person to be a contributing, tax-paying citizen upon graduation or after college. Many learn skills for employment in college, but others can go the skilled-trade route. The more pathways we offer while students are in our district, the better!” stated Lori. Beyond teacher pay and preparing students, Lori believes in giving parents school options.

“I want to ensure our district keeps the CHOICE PLAN, which gives parents school options and increases their involvement. Our district has been a model for the state and continues to satisfy the large majority of our district families. Ninety percent of U.S. students will attend public schools! That means that local Board of Education races are vitally important. If, while on the Board I help maintain the choice plan, show a balanced budget, keep moving schools off the state ‘low-performing’ list, increase our local teacher pay, and contribute to a positive portrayal of public education, I will have done my job well,” commented Lori.

“We are seeing blues, ocean greens, and believe it or not, pink!” says June. “Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is Caliente, a red, and while everyone isn’t ready for red walls, we’re seeing forms of it in pillows, doors, and accent trims.”

June notes that a natural base is still most popular, but with pops of color (including reds and pinks!) added in, especially in rugs, pillows, and sofa fabrics.

“Most of our clients are at a point where they want some color,” explains June. “Cabinets in a powder room or kitchen may show up a very bright green or blue!”

Homemade Cleaning Products

has been much discussion about whether or not cleaning products are safe and healthy for homes. Most are filled with toxins and chemicals that could cause harm to your family and furry friends. For example, some products warn you to keep them away from animals, due to the odor and/or the ingredients. If the item has this type of warning, it may not be safe to use in your home.

However, there are ways to make your own cleaning products with materials you probably already use, such as baking soda and vinegar. Creating your own allows you to feel safer and more in control of what your family and animals are breathing in, while you still have a sparkling clean house. Here are just a few of the recipes for homemade cleaning products. For these recipes, make sure you are stocked up on baking soda, vinegar, and spray bottles (available at Dollar Tree stores).

ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER INGREDIENTS: 4 Tbs. baking soda 1 quart warm water ½ cup white vinegar DIRECTIONS: Mix all ingredients together.

Pour into a spray bottle or dip a sponge into the mixture. This allpurpose cleaner is great for use on kitchen counters, appliances, and more. The baking soda acts as a deodorizer and takes away smells. In addition, you can add a lemon rind, rosemary sprigs, or drops of an essential oil to add a scented smell to the allpurpose cleaner.

GLASS CLEANER INGREDIENTS: 2 cups water ½ cup white or cider vinegar ¼ cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentration works best) 1 to 2 drops of an essential oil of your choice for smell (optional)

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients and add into a spray bottle. Don’t spray the cleaner directly onto the glass; spray onto a towel or cloth first. Let’s just say—move over, Windex! This natural glass cleaner is perfect to take away streaks and make your glass items look like new.

FABRIC SOFTENER

HEAVY-DUTY SCRUB

DIRECTIONS: Mix all ingredients together and store in an empty container. Whenever you are doing laundry, add in about ¼ cup to a normal-sized load right before the rinse cycle.

INGREDIENTS: Half a lemon ½ cup borax Dip the lemon into the borax and put directly onto the surface. Then, rinse.

It is never fun to keep scrubbing rust stains on porcelain and enamel areas when nothing happens. This heavyduty scrub will take away those stains in no time at all.

INGREDIENTS: 5½ cups water 15-oz. bottle of your favorite hair conditioner 2½ cups white vinegar 20 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

DISINFECTANT WIPES INGREDIENTS: 1 cup water ¼ cup vinegar 8 drops tea tree oil 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil 8 drops lemon essential oil 15-20 squares of cloth Empty container, such as an old baby wipe container DIRECTIONS: Fold and place the cloths into the container and set aside. Combine all ingredients together in a mixing bowl, making sure to mix well. Pour mixture over the cloths and let soak.

Whenever needed, the disinfectant wipes will be ready to use. Make sure to repeat as often as needed to keep the wipes moist.

One final tip to leave you with is to use lemonade Kool-Aid as a toilet bowl cleaner. Just flush, sprinkle in the Kool-Aid and scrub with a toilet bowl brush. Then, let sit overnight and flush in the morning.

a few towns – Mount Airy, Pilot Mountain, Dobson, Sparta and Wilkesboro – into Google Maps on your smartphone and discover some of the area’s wonderful and surprising back roads. You’ll also find some nice restaurants for lunch, and you’ll easily be back home in time for dinner.

But if you are interested in some time-tested scenic drives, here are several worth exploring: Uwharrie National Forest: There are several roads that wind through Uwharrie National Forest. They offer great views and a wide variety of colors.

Best Local Fall Leaf Viewing Trips Leaf peepers take note – fall foliage viewing season is almost upon us. But where and when are the best times to see leaves turn in our neck of the woods? It depends.

Hanging Rock Scenic Byway: From King you take Route 66 and connect with Route 89. The Sauratown Mountains provide the backdrop. You can get out and explore.

Hanging Rock State Park: Hiking trails, waterfalls, dramatic

vistas and picnic areas – the charming towns of Danbury, Pinnacle and Pilot Mountain.

The varied elevations in Northwest North Carolina create one of the longest color-viewing seasons in the nation.

U.S. 421 Scenic Byway: This route goes through Wautauga County and offers striking vistas of mountains, valleys and woodlands between Deep Gap and Boone.

Elevations range from Mount Mitchell (6,684 feet) – the highest point east of the Mississippi River – to spots less than 1,000 feet throughout the Piedmont. So if you miss a “peak” time in one spot, you can easily catch the best colors at a lower elevation.

New River Valley Byway: Named for the New River, which is the oldest river in the country and the second oldest in the world, this byway winds from Boone to Laurel Springs on N.C. 194 – the “Old Buffalo Trail.”

Here’s a general guideline on locations and when leaves are usually at their peak: October 1-10: The highest elevations – above 5,000 feet – turn

the earliest. Grandfather Mountain in Linville is a fun place to start. It’s a quick drive from Banner Elk, Boone or Blowing Rock. Tickets for adults are $20 and $9 for children (4-12).

Other locations worth considering include Mount Mitchell, Waterrock Knob, Graveyard Fields and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

October 10-20: This is the best time for elevations from 4,000

to 5,000 feet. This includes much of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway, along with Boone, Blowing Rock and many parts of the Great Smoky Mountains.

October 18-26: This is when the lower elevations, 3,000 to 4,000 feet, start to get in on the action. Some attractive spots include Pisgah National Forest, Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, Dill Falls and Wildcat Falls. Some other prime locations include Linville Gorge, the train ride at Nantahala Gorge and Maggie Valley.

October 24-31: All the stragglers are now joining the leafpainting party. Some key destinations include Asheville, Brevard, Waynesville, Cherokee, Dupont State Forest, Biltmore Estate, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure.

But if you’d rather stay closer to home, it’s fun to explore the country routes to smaller towns around Winston-Salem. Plug

Want to opt for a more local Forsyth County experience? You could visit Old Salem Gardens and walk around the cobblestone streets. And Reynolda Gardens has lovely fall plants and hiking trails that explore the larger Reynolda House estate.

the summer when you were, say, eight years old, a cartwheel conducted in the front lawn of your home may have resulted in a bad experience—namely, a sting.

The remembrance of that one moment may have stayed in your memory, fostering fear at the sound of buzzing or the mere appearance of a bee resting inside a flower. There is a distinction, however, between dangerous bees, hornets, yellow jackets, and wasps and the particular types of bees that are responsible for pollinating our trees and flowers.

If donning the white bee suit and gloves is appealing, it is an empowering moment to stand in the presence of a prosperous hive and watch the small striped bees perform distinct jobs of flying out and collecting pollen for the colony.

BENEFITS OF BEE KEEPING

Individuals who have established a hive on their property have higher yields from their fruit trees and vegetables, and if the beekeeper continues to expand their colonies, there will be the reward of another delicious product, honey! It’s natural to have reservations about interacting with bees.

With the protection of a bee suit, and the keen desire to take care of the hive, individuals may discover they are more than just a beekeeper.

Titles like “queen regent” may occur to them in secret, as well as the notion that they could become a “bee whisperer.” Not everyone can stand to feel the gentle wind of wings beating above the hand while tickling feet land and walk before flying off.

LOCATION It is a common misconception that only a person who lives in the country can enjoy beekeeping. The reality is, many urban beekeepers have established hives on rooftops and in community gardens. Success depends upon the interaction between the beekeeper and the colony and a well-suited location, facing south and roughly 16 inches off the ground. Bees also require sunlight to begin their day. Since honeybees can travel a great distance, consider the surroundings, such as the sources of pollen, including wildflowers and weeds, and water. (Add a few rocks to a nearby birdbath to ensure the bees have a drinking source and are able to stay safe.) Beekeepers can assist in providing a layer of protection; however, bees can and will survive the most challenging winters on their own.

RESEARCH AND MEETINGS If you have the slightest interest in the workings and requirements of setting up a hive, begin by watching online videos or listening to podcasts. Since experienced apiarists can provide the rules and tips for beekeeping, introduce yourself to a local beekeeper. He or she will be eager to answer questions and connect you with a local apiarist who sells honey, hives, equipment, supplies, and bees.

SUPERS AND HONEY BOXES One option for the backyard beekeeper is to contain your colony in two medium boxes called supers, which house ten frames. Resting on top are honey boxes, a third and fourth box, relatively smaller in size and frame. New beekeepers can buy a kit comprising supers, honey boxes, frames, wax inserts, bottom boards, an inner top lid, a telescoping top, and feeders. Befriending an apiarist, you may decide to buy his supplies or seek a secondary option. Paint each box before the arrival of your ordered bees, which can either be picked up or delivered between April and May. Once placed in the hive, bees require time to collect pollen and lay a brood in preparation for the arrival of winter.

THE BEEKEEPER The role of the beekeeper will be both joyous and semischeduled. By July, honeybees will begin to consume vast amounts of sugar water (one and two-thirds cup of water to one cup of sugar) due to the lack of available pollen.

A top feeder, which holds up to four gallons of sugar water, may be a worthwhile purchase. Additionally, having available a 3.5-gallon bucket with a spinning lid to contain 25 pounds of sugar will accommodate the constant demands of feeding. New beekeepers will enjoy visiting the hive in the early or late daylight hours to swap out a Mason jar or add a gallon to the top feeder. Witnessing productive and well-bedded bees only adds to a beekeeper’s enjoyment.

While the decision to become a beekeeper is an important one, you can meanwhile support your local beekeepers by buying honey, and planting flowers that attract our native pollinators! Together, we can “bee” helpful!

REFRIGERATOR OR PANTRY: The Where and How to Store Food

Rules come with the keeping of food. In the cause of eliminating waste of food goods, whether fresh, boxed, or canned, the following guide can be a lifesaver!

SPICES: Spices are vulnerable to heat, light, air, and humidity. It is wise to keep spices away from the stove and contained in airtight jars. Whole spice remains fresh for up to two years.

THE COUNTER

CHEESE: Immediately wrap cheese in parchment paper. Do not place into the freezer, since the composition will change and become less flavorful. Only slice cheese when needed. It will remain fresh if the block is intact.

TOMATOES: Similar to most whole fruits, tomatoes also should not be refrigerated.

Although they are subject to losing flavor, tomatoes will continue to ripen.

Whole fruits should only be left out for a maximum of five days. Choose a cool, dry place.

FRUIT: For longevity, wrap apples and pears individually in parchment paper.

GARLIC, ONIONS, AND SHALLOTS: Choose a cool, dry location and hang in a braid if possible. Keep onions far away from potatoes THE PANTRY

THE REFRIGERATOR

DAIRY: Concerning milk, creams, and yogurts, keep these items on the upper shelves where the temperature remains constant.

DELI MEATS: Write the date on the package immediately after opening. Deli meats typically last for five to seven days.

Store in the compartment designed for meats, usually a bottom shelf, the coldest location in the refrigerator.

BROWN RICE: Having a high oil content, brown rice can easily spoil if left as packaged in your pantry at room temperature. One solution is to refrigerate for up to one year. If refrigerator space is not easy to surrender, vacuum sealing in Mason jars and keeping it in a semi-dark and cool location is a secondary solution.

EGGS: The door of the refrigerator is the warmest location for items. Place eggs on the bottom shelf to aid in maintaining a consistent temperature.

Tip: The investment of a food saver and a collection of Mason jars can assist the household in keeping dry foods stable and readily available when rice or noodles are needed.

Mylar bags and three- to five-gallon buckets with sealable Gamma lids can be a resourceful means to store bulk and inexpensive items.

VEGETABLES: Toss rotten leaves, but wrap unwashed leafy greens in a dry paper towel to retain excess moisture.

Place in a plastic bag, keeping it opened before placing it in the “crisper drawer.”

Keep vegetables away from mangoes, pears, and kiwi. To revive lettuce or herbs, place in ice water for up to two minutes.

KETCHUP AND MUSTARD: Made from high levels of vinegar, it is a best practice to place these condiments in the fridge.

These items will do well in the door of the refrigerator.

THE FREEZER BACON: Once opened, use within one week. It is recommended to be divided into servings and placed in the freezer.

To unthaw, place either in the refrigerator or microwave.

BANANAS: Once the banana begins to turn brown, place it in the freezer. It has reached its most delicious form as an ingredient to a milkshake or smoothie.

BREAD: To minimize moisture loss, store bread in a freezer bag for a short period of time. To revive the crust, place it in the oven for a few minutes.

COFFEE: Measure out the coffee you intend to use across a week and place it in an airtight container; then, put the remaining beans in a resealable, airtight bag before freezing for optimal freshness.

Tip: Buy the amount of coffee you expect to drink within two weeks. Whole beans will last longer, and only grind the essential amount.

NUTS: Due to their high-fat content, nuts have the propensity to become rancid if kept at room temperature. After storing for one month, repackage in an airtight container before freezing. They will remain fresh for up to one year.

CHANGE CONTAINERS One important effort you can make to extend the life of most packaged foods is to change their containers. A store owner needs to provide what is for him an economical container, which does not always imply longevity. Consider alternative containers such as Mason jars, Ziploc bags, or other types of sealable items.

When

Bill Cook, owner of Piedmont Sheet Metal, began working for the company, he was 17, doing what many young men did in the 1940s; leaving home to help support his family. Moving from Avery County, at the foot of Beech Mountain, to Winston-Salem, NC, the “big city,” full of opportunity, was just what Bill found when he learned that Piedmont Sheet Metal was hiring. “In those days there was little to be found in jobs at home, so I moved to Winston-Salem, lived with my aunt and began working for Mr. Rothrock, who owned Piedmont Sheet Metal. I worked in the shop area, making ductwork for 60 cents an hour. Each week I made $24.00 and that was good money back then,” Mr. Cook recalled. With a little money saved up, Bill married Florence in 1949 and built a house on a lot he bought for $300.

Under the mentoring of Mr. Rothrock, Bill moved from the shop to installation, eventually being on the road traveling, calling on out-of-town customers, learning along the way the importance of putting customers first and always doing more than you said you would do for customers.

“In 1964, Mr. Rothrock decided to retire due to health reasons and asked me if I wanted to buy the business. I did, and now at 88 years old, I still come in most days,” said Mr. Cook. With a reputation like Piedmont Sheet Metal had under Mr. Rothrock, he knew Bill Cook was the man to take over ownership because he had seen Bill’s ability to work with people from all walks of life, and that Bill, like himself, was a man of integrity. Now, some 90 years later, family-operated by the second and third generations of Cooks, Piedmont Sheet Metal is one of the most successful HVAC companies in North Carolina, with many employees having been with the company over 45 years.

On

a sunny Tuesday morning, kindergarten students are sticking their tongues out and laughing. Rather than scolding them, their teacher is an active part of the fun: welcome to Lower School science at Forsyth Country Day School.

“My scientists, today we’re going to talk about the sense of taste,” says teacher Danny Lough. “T is for taste. What do we use to taste with?”

“Our tongue!” one student replies.

“Does our tongue automatically know that cake is sweet?” he asked. “We actually have little bumps on our tongue called taste buds that tell us about taste.”

Mr. Lough takes out a big magnifying glass. “If you look through this, it makes things look a lot bigger. We’re going to play a game of hot potato and look at each other’s taste buds for three seconds, then pass the magnifying glass to our next scientist.”

The magnifying glass travels quickly around the room. Tongues are inspected and taste buds identified, then the young scientists taste different mystery samples and identify whether they are sweet, sour, salty, or bitter. (Note: basil, the bitter taste, was NOT a favorite.)

The human body is only the first subject covered in daily kindergarten science. Students in Mr. Lough’s class also learn about how scientists work, animals and animal habitats (staying with the five vertebrate groups), plants, and finally, physics.

“In Lower School at Forsyth Country Day, it’s all about hands-on learning,” Mr. Lough says. “We do experiments. We learn scientific concepts, but it’s fun.”

And the kids agree. Kindergartener Harper Kate says, “Science is really fun.

Mr. Lough is funny. He says new words in a funny deep voice.”

Fellow Kindergartener Liam agrees. “You get to learn new things and it’s fun.”

Science department chair Joe Trotter— who ensures that the science curriculum aligns vertically from kindergarten through twelfth grade—said that science in Lower School is meant to engage and spark curiosity. “What we like to see is kid-engaged learning,” Joe says. “Science is exploration, observation.

It’s discovering how to observe and look at things and ask questions, which sets them up to investigate science concepts at a deeper level as they go forward.”

From first through fourth grade, students study with Jacqui Chance. She holds degrees in biology and dance and uses music and movement in her classes to help engage young learners and help to channel their (considerable) energy.

“Lower School science is all about sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm—getting them to ask questions about the world around them,” Jacqui says. “It’s about the hows, the whys, and the whats, and we learn it in a manner that taps into all the different ways kids learn—kinesthetic, auditory, visual.”

Creative, hands-on activities help Mrs. Chance pave the way for learning serious science—and in many cases, she taps into character education by bringing in a servicelearning component. For first grade’s study of plants and their life cycle, she introduced the “Lettuce Help” project.

In early fall, students plant pots with lettuce. Once their crop has grown, the class harvests the lettuce and donates the produce to the Clemmons Food Pantry.

“We’re developing citizens as well as scientists,” she said.

“If we can use science to help others, we do it.” Other community-minded projects include the third grade chemistry unit, which involves making mixtures. After making the standard salt solution and oil-and-water mixture, they make trail mix and deliver it to Samaritan Ministries in December. “That way, the homeless on the street can stop in and get a nutritious snack … and we’ve learned about mixtures.”

Jesper, a third grader, enjoys learning with Mrs. Chance. “I love how many projects we do,” he said. “I love the experiments, and Mrs. Chance is nice. She cares about how you learn.”

From kindergarten to Middle School to Upper School AP Biology and the Engineering Academy, one overarching theme emerges. “No matter what grade they’re in, we want our kids engaged and hands-on,” Mr. Trotter said. “We want them to be active learners and to enjoy the journey.”

Mrs. Chance is committed to teaching her students real scientific concepts and giving them the tools to explore their world, but to do it in an engaging way. “My bottom line is to try to make it fun but to keep it good, solid science.”

Many times, orthodontic patients drive themselves, but the younger patients often come with parents and younger siblings. Dr. Shoaf recognizes that her practice needs to be “family friendly” and be a place where everyone in the family, including the patient, is comfortable. “We have recently enlarged our waiting area, adding a children’s play corner for the younger siblings who come with our patients as well as a family bathroom with a diaper changing table. As many families travel together to appointments, this should give additional room for those family members as they wait,” said Dr. Shoaf. The expansion of Salem Smiles Orthodontics was made possible by Dr. Shoaf annexing the space next to her practice that was once a yoga studio. “We also really needed two more offices for our financial services to assist with financial discussions. This should also give some additional private space for those meetings,” said Dr. Shoaf.

Continued attention to the patient’s needs and treatments have come in the form of a second oral scanner and a second 3-D printer.

Efficient and Patient-Focused Care “The scanners and printers were added to be able to increase the number of people who can get their braces off on any particular day,” said Dr. Shoaf. “We felt we were running behind in being able to schedule patients to get their braces off and wanted to ‘up our game’ to allow braces removal faster and get their retainers the same day to avoid any relapse. We use the 3-D printers to make durable plastic, not fragile plaster, models of the teeth when the braces are removed and make the initial set of retainers over those models. If the patient loses or breaks a retainer and brings the plastic models back to us, we are able to make a new retainer at a discount for the family. We don’t believe in penalizing a whole family financially when a teenager may not be as responsible as we’d like them to be with their retainer.” While the overall feel of Dr. Shoaf’s practice and the innovative patient treatment may draw patients to Salem Smiles Orthodontics, Dr. Shoaf’s experience in her field is unique.

MEET THE TEAM: Laura B. Ramsay, MD has been a physician with Novant Health WomanCare – Kernersville for six years. Originally from New York, Dr. Speaks moved to Winston-Salem during her high school years where she met her husband. Every year on October 31st, things go bump in the night, monsters go on parade and witches, goblins and ghosts ring doorbells throughout the country, exclaiming “trick or treat!” Halloween is a widely celebrated holiday where people dress up in costume and eat candy. However, the day has a longstanding history that dates back for centuries. Test your Halloween knowledge with these bewitching facts!

1. Original Jack O’ Lanterns weren’t made from pumpkins, but from turnips.

2. After Christmas, Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday.

3. If you have a fear of Halloween, you have samhainophobia.

4. Other names for the day include Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve and All Saints’ Eve. In addition, some have called it Witches Night, Lamswool and Summer’s End. 5. The traditional holiday colors, black and orange, have interesting meanings. Orange is known for strength, endurance, harvest and autumn. As for black, it is associated with death and darkness.

6. Ireland is said to be the holiday’s birthplace.

7. In China, Halloween is known as Teng Chieh or the Lantern Festival.

Dragon-shaped lanterns and other animals hang on houses and streets to help guide spirits back to their homes. Family members leave food, water and portraits of their ancestors to honor and welcome the deceased.

The Party Went On! The Children’s Law Center (CLC) of Central North Carolina’s Third Annual Birthday Blast took place September 13th, even as Hurricane Florence advanced. This lively evening at the Millennium Center in downtown W-S recognized remarkable members of our community and the work achieved every day by the Children’s Law Center, as advocates for children experiencing high levels of family violence or conflict.

The Camel City Jazz Orchestra’s sextet, with vocalist Diana Tuffin, set the mood for an uplifting evening. Tributes to honorees Amy Kuhlman, Gary Tash, Rich Keshian, and Womble Bond Dickinson inspired all present.

Executive Director Iris Sunshine shared exciting news about CLC’s work. “We have partnered with the Wake Forest University School of Law on a study of our outcomes. The results are clear: A CLC guardian ad litem’s appointment in a civil domestic violence case significantly reduces family violence. It gets better: The earlier the Children’s Law Center is appointed, the better the outcome for the child and their family.”

Sunshine continued, “We must continue to bring hope to children whose lives are upended on a daily basis by the storms of violence and conflict they experience at home.”

The Children’s Law Center provides children with quality legal advocacy, focusing on domestic violence issues, high-conflict custody cases, and the rights of children in public education. Their vision is to increase children’s potential to become emotionally healthy adults, through fostering their sense of hope and empowerment.

to Make School Mornings

are so many things to love about the Fall season: leaves changing colors, pulling your boots out of storage, apple picking, pumpkinflavored everything, and pulling your hair out to get yourself and kids ready for school every morning. Right? If this sounds like you, read the hacks below on how to make your school mornings run easier and get ready to be a lot less stressed in the mornings.

INVEST IN A PROGRAMMABLE COFFEE MAKER. If you are a coffee drinker, spend the little bit of extra money to get a coffee maker that you can program, so you have coffee already made when you wake up in the morning. This may seem like a trivial matter, but having coffee ready to go as soon as you wake up can be a game changer.

HAVE BREAKFAST READY. Despite the lies American mothers have been taught from television, very few people have time to cook a full gourmet breakfast every morning. Most are lucky if they can throw some eggs into the skillet before running out to catch the bus. Here are some easy and hearty breakfast suggestions that can be made the night before and either eaten cold or thrown into the microwave for 30 seconds, saving a solid 15–20 minutes in cooking/ cleaning up: • Overnight oats (made in a Mason jar if you’re feeling especially hip); • Hash brown/egg casserole; • Breakfast burritos (these can also be made in larger batches and frozen).

DO ALL APPEARANCE PREP THE NIGHT BEFORE. This includes, but is not limited to, showering/bathing and picking out outfits (including clothes, shoes, undergarments, accessories, make-up). The less you need to think in the mornings, the easier the morning will go. For children old enough to care about what they are wearing, having them pick out their outfits the night before prevents an epic meltdown about why they can’t wear black skinny jeans to school on the 95-degree day, or shorts and a tank top the first day back from Winter Break. At the very least, it will allow the argument to be resolved the night before. For the exceptionally stubborn (read: preschoolers), some families find it’s easier to dress them in their school clothes the night before. At this age, just about all clothes have stretchy waistbands, so comfort isn’t an issue for sleeping, and it will save you 15 minutes of trying to explain to your 4-year-old for the fiftieth time why pants are necessary to wear in public.

IF YOU PACK LUNCHES, DO IT ALL ON SUNDAY. This tip depends largely on what you pack for your children, and your fridge space.

If you are packing leftovers and have six kids with a normal-sized fridge, this may not work for you; but you can certainly take the premise and pack all lunches the night before and just grab them on your way out the door. For those who have the fridge space, this can save you so much time and energy during the week. Power pack five lunches for each kid on Sunday after your grocery shopping; a very popular option for this process is making bento boxes.

Bento boxes are essentially a lunch packed with a bunch of different snack options, such as crackers, fruit pieces, bits of protein (hard-boiled eggs, nuts, etc.), vegetable slices, or whatever else your child loves to eat. This is a great option for picky eaters, letting them pick out what foods they want in their boxes themselves. A similar option is to pre-pack baggies with snacks in them (carrot sticks, celery, peanut or almond butter, cheese sticks, etc.) and let the kids pick out one of each category the night before: one fruit, one veggie, one carb, one dairy, and one dessert, such as fruit snacks or frozen yogurt tubes. This gives them control over what they are eating and saves you time.

Overall, the key to reducing school morning stress is to reduce the number of tasks you have to accomplish in the mornings as much as humanly possible.

For the things that aren’t achievable to do the night before, such as brushing your teeth, making your bed, and getting dressed, work these into a check-list for your kids. You can even make one for yourself, if you need the motivation as well. If you make a check-list and laminate or frame it, you can hang it where your children can check it off daily with a dry erase marker and reuse it in an ongoing manner. To keep them motivated, try linking this check-list to a reward system.

Perhaps one week of checking everything off means an extra 30 minutes of reading time before bed on a Friday night, or an extra 15 minutes of video game time. Find what works for your family and remember that this will evolve over time.

BY DR. DEBBIE LINVILLE Each month, I spotlight two books guaranteed to delight readers and provide fun activities to further extend the meaning of each reading experience. With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 33-year teaching career, literacy expertise and a passion for creating joyful readers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

Autumn Splendor Autumn is often called “fall” in the nited States because this is the time of year when deciduous trees shed their leaves; resulting in a magnificent, annual cascade of red, purple, orange, yellow, tan and brown. Walking through the park under a canopy of color or jumping into a freshly raked pile of crunchy leaves are two activities enjoyed during this time of year. ut, how do leaves turn colors, and why do they fall off the trees?

Leaves need sunlight, air, water and chlorophyll to make food (sugar) for the tree. uring the spring and summer, leaves serve as factories where most of the food that a tree needs to grow is manufactured. . This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll which gives the leaf its green color.

3. In autumn, because of changes in length of daylight and temperature, leaves stop their food-making process to prepare for winter.

. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the other colors in the leaves (mainly red, yellow, orange and tan) begin to appear. . As trees prepare for winter, they reduce themselves to their toughest parts – stems, trunks, branches and bark – the tree saves energy by getting rid of the leaves.

In addition to the transforming autumn landscape, other changes are taking place in nature. A host of animals scurry about, gathering food for the coming winter in their nests or dens; some storing fat on their bodies. verhead, some species of birds and butterflies head south to escape the falling temperatures while furry land animals grow thicker coats to keep warm; some even hibernate for the season. estivals and other activities revolve around the harvesting of the season’s crops pumpkins for pies and ack-o-Lanterns; apples for cider and cakes; bales of hay for wagon rides and campfire seating – roasting marshmallows until they are just slightly charred on the outside and gooey in the middle!

A long-standing favorite children’s book author and illustrator, Lois Ehlert has created a visual autumnal feast for children and adults with fantastic illustrations made almost entirely from leaves.

Ehlert cleverly fashioned the Leaf Man from a single maple leaf and gathered brilliantly colored leaves from oaks, hawthorns, elms, beeches and other trees to create a variety of objects and animals in the book.

In like fashion, on a crisp, fall day, put on a jacket and go outside with your family to gather as many interesting and brightly colored leaves as possible.

Make leaf-shaped animals and objects – you are only limited by your imagination! se crayon, chalk, paint, construction paper cutouts or any other medium you like to create a background and glue on your leafy creations. To preserve your work of art, cover it with clear contact paper.

ctober 31st, nearing dusk, children will emerge from their homes as superheroes or villains, fantastic creatures or fictitious characters, ready to thrill someone in the night. They may feel invisible, prepared to leap and fly, or “zoom” with unstoppable speed. As families begin their annual walk from house to house and street to street, greeting neighbors and reminding children for the dozenth time to say, “Please” and “Thank you!,” safety will be a primary concern on a thrilling night. Whether you are trick-or-treating for the first time or are now walking with grandchildren, the following tips will help everyone in your group make good choices.

COSTUME TIPS Leaves packed in layers on the roads can present a slippery surface. Rather than walking on unfamiliar streets in the darkness in a new, unique shoe, encourage children to wear a flat, rubber-soled shoe.

If you remove the burden of walking up steep inclines and numerous stairs in slippery shoes, children will be much happier and safer. Consider delegating members in your group to carry a small battery-operated lantern, flashlight, or glow stick. Reflective tape, glowing bracelets or necklaces can be used on a child’s costume or trick-or-treat bag to increase their visibility.

• Masks can obstruct your child’s vision; therefore, choose an alternative—face paint. Make sure your child’s skin is tested, first, to ensure it does not trigger an allergic reaction. And, before bed, the face should be washed, removing all streaks and evidence of the paint to prevent eye irritations and rashes.

• Check for impediments in your child’s ability to walk weeks before the costume is worn. Pinning and sewing the hem of a long dress, dragging pants legs, or a cape may require time.

• Accessories such as brooms, blunttipped swords, or tall staffs may become a burden after a mere thirty minutes

of walking. It may be wise to consider leaving these items behind.

NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY Eager children anxious to call out “Trickor-Treat” may not remember basic pedestrian safety; therefore, before the night begins, discuss why it is important to walk, never run, on the sidewalk and not to enter the street between parked cars.

Safety implies children staying together within their group, and not accepting a treat inside a car or house.

• If accompanying young children, parents should stand in the same location for children to find their way back with ease.

• When large numbers are present, consider scheduling a meeting place such as a particular driveway or street sign.

It’s only the second month of school, and already you are spending the evenings battling one topic, homework.

While you may arrive at the point of insisting homework must be done, the battle, if continued, will hurt your relationship. efore more detrimental problems arise, step back and consider the possible solutions.

ORGANIZATIONAL GUIDANCE rom year to year, a teacher’s expectation begins with the arrival of a school supply list. Some children cannot manage a twoinch three-ringed binder and loose paper, for instance. It may be the sole reason she does not enjoy sitting down with her new school supplies; instead, verbal frustration and emotional distress have changed the balance of home life.

• Contact the classroom teacher to learn the expectations of maintaining folders, notebooks, or binders.

• Encourage your child to identify her favorite subjects; thereby, she can begin and conclude with an enjoyable assignment.

• Losing homework assignments can be problematic. To eliminate the problem, recommend a one-folder system. Morning and afternoon subjects could be placed, respectively, on the left and right sides.

• Provide your child with a desk calendar to help visualize upcoming projects, tests, and quizzes.

• To ease the morning routine, plan the location for bookbags, lunches, and other items, such as keys or shoes.

VERBALIZING A ROUTINE After a long day of listening, thinking, contributing, and applying knowledge, students need time to unwind and relax. Parents can ask questions and direct answers; however, it is the child’s responsibility to do the work. sing a sheet of paper to cover half of the page may promote willingness and independence. Parents should keep notes to relay to the teacher.

AUDITORY AND VISUAL LEARNERS Everyone has a gift. Some children may be excellent listeners and retain the content with ease, with others require seeing or writing down the information to acquire understanding.

• If a child does not enjoy reading a book, perhaps reading out loud (in a whisper) or listening to an audiobook could be a solution.

• Auditory learners often benefit from recording lectures, if a teacher or professor grants permission.

• isual learners may thrive in using colored pencils or highlighters to emphasize words. Index cards are useful to review vocabulary or a means to study.

• Homework journals are mandatory tools for a visual learner, who will make use of daily entries and monthly calendars. If the school does not provide an agenda, your child will need an alternative means, such as a shorthand method of writing assignments, or utilizing a “talk to text” app.

• Rereading notes and correcting quizzes or tests are excellent practices for all types of learning styles.

ESTABLISH OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH THE TEACHER Home should be an exciting place to connect with loved ones, unwind, and talk openly about the day. Heightened levels of frustration and emotion will not improve unless parents, students, and teachers work together to find a solution.

The problem may be simple or complex; yet, without conversation, it will be an unbearable year. Parents should not delay in reaching out to the classroom teacher of one subject area or the entire team. Together, everyone involved can contribute ideas and help relieve the tension at home.

RAISING EVERY CHILD Campaign Supports the Most Vulnerable Children

Services has launched the Raising Every Child capital campaign in order to address orsyth County’s immediate needs of the most vulnerable population, children from birth to age . The goal for Raising Every Child is 3. million.

At the official public launch event in September, the campaign raised , 11, or of its goal from community foundations, businesses, and private donors.

Now, the organization is asking the community to help close the opportunity gap and give every child the start they need to succeed in school and life.

“Studies show that the first five years of a child’s life are a time of rapid brain development – a once-only window of opportunity when a child’s mind becomes wired for success (or hardship) that will last into adulthood,” said ob eikema, President and Chief Executive fficer of amily Services.

The need is great in orsyth County as more than , children, age and under, are growing up under the constant stress and pressures of living in poverty. More than half of the children who enter kindergarten in Winston-Salem orsyth County schools are at risk of falling behind, particularly in reading, from the first day they start school. In addition, a 1 Harvard niversity study ranked orsyth County one of the worst counties in the nited States in helping poor children up the income ladder.

Studies show that these children can benefit from high-quality early childhood development programs.

Current amily Services programs are working and improving those numbers, yet limited public funding is not meeting the needs of all preschoolers who are eligible. The organization needs additional funds to expand, collaborate and impact more children and their families than ever before.

“We must build a community culture that views this as critical to the future vitality of orsyth County,” said ill Reingold, campaign co-chair along with wife, Peggy Reingold. “Every child deserves the chance to reach his or her full potential. The future of our community depends on making this possible.

What makes you feel safe? It could be holding someone’s hand when you’re crossing the road. Maybe you want your teddy bear when it’s time for bed. Do you like to have a flashlight nearby when it’s storming outside?

If someone has given you a ride on a motor scooter or motorcycle, they probably said, “Hold on tight!”

wants us to be stuck to Him! Getting to know God and learning to love Him is the best way to stay safe. The Bible tells us to hang on to what we are learning about God. That means we go to church or Sunday school, and we pay attention and really listen. We pray and ask Jesus to make us just like God wants us to be—all week long, not just on Sunday.

The world is a big place, and it can be scary and even dangerous, but there are many things that help keep us safe. Cars have seat belts and airbags. Buildings have fire alarms and fire extinguishers. Roads have stop signs and speed limits. Can you think of some people who help keep you safe? Even though we have so many helpers, accidents still happen and people can get hurt.

Staying close to God doesn’t mean that nothing bad or scary will ever happen to you.

When you are hanging on to God, you know that He is right beside you…in all the fun and excitement and in all the hurts and tears, too.

have been blessed with the opportunity to take a few amazing vacations to some pretty magnificent destinations. While I have loved trying new foods, shopping for souvenirs and being able to escape reality for a few days, my favorite thing about these trips has been time spent connecting with nature.

Watching a blazing orange sunset over nothing but a vast expanse of ocean, gazing at the full moon in a dark sky and its reflection in the shimmering sea, exploring undersea life with the help of a mask and snorkel and being amazed by the diversity of od’s creation—these are the things that have left a truly lasting impression on my spirit.

The good news is that you and I don’t have to take a trip to a tropical paradise to appreciate what od has created. ust take some time to “unplug” from the noise and look around. o take a hike on one of the many trails in our area or head to a lake for a few hours and soak in the view. When you take time to appreciate od’s creation and give glory to the Creator, it’s an act of worship and communion with Him.

eople are attracted to charismatic leaders. Some even strive to be a part of their “inner circle” in order to feel important. Many pastors have been blessed with a charismatic leadership style, and often, without their knowing it, may appear to have an inner circle as well.

Maybe you’ve wanted to share with your pastor how much his sermon touched your heart, or that you have been praying for him and his family. ut you walked on by, feeling crowded out. It may surprise you, then, to know that many pastors often feel isolated, depressed and anxious about not doing enough or being good enough, despite the fact that they appear to be so popular.

Lessons from the Genealogy of Jesus

When

it comes to reading the Bible, I know few who relish reading the genealogies. I get it. Long lists of names, most of which are crazy-hard to pronounce.

If you’re like me, at some point, you’ve wondered why those long lists of family records are important to Scripture. They actually do have a purpose, and though they are challenging to get through, they ultimately help point us to our connection to Jesus. It’s actually kind of fascinating if you get past the list of names.

In Matthew 1:1-17, we read the genealogy of Jesus. I’m just going to hit the major players here: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, Tamar, Rahab, Boaz, Ruth, Jesse, David, Bathsheba and Solomon.

You’ve undoubtedly heard stories of some or most of these people, but for a quick recap and to add to the genealogy that’s not listed in Matthew...

Abraham was a descendant of Noah (Noah was his 8th great-grandfather)...Abraham and his wife, Sarah, tried to hurry up God’s promise of a son through Sarah’s servant (Hagar/Ishmael), but in God’s timing, they eventually had Isaac.

From Isaac, came Jacob who tricked his older brother out of his birthright, and with four different women, he had 12 sons who were the foundation for the 12 Tribes of Israel.

Judah was one of those sons, and he had a daughter-in-law, Tamar, who married one son. That guy died without any children, so Judah had his other son marry her. He died too, and so Judah sent Tamar away with the promise that she could marry his third son when he was old enough.

But, he reneged on the promise, so Tamar was a childless widow – a really bad position to be in back in those days. So, when Tamar heard Judah was coming to town, she dressed as a prostitute, slept with her father-in-law and she and Judah became parents to twin boys.

One of those twins was named Perez, and a few generations later, Rahab was born. Rahab was the prostitute who helped Joshua out in Jericho.

Rahab’s son was Boaz, the awesome good-guy of the Old Testament who married Ruth.

But, Ruth was a Moabite, making her a descendant of Lot’s incestuous relationship with his daughter.

Nevertheless, Ruth and Boaz had a son, Obed, who would have Jesse and ultimately become David’s grandfather.

David was the youngest of Jesse’s eight sons, and the one Jesse deemed to be the least likely candidate when Samuel showed up looking for the next king of Israel. David was known as “a man after God’s own heart), yet he wasn’t a squeaky-clean guy. He lusted after another man’s wife (Bathsheba), got her pregnant, then had her husband killed. He was a murderer and adulterer, yet when he repented, he repented with all his heart.

Then there was Solomon, the second son of David and Bathsheba (she was David’s wife by this point), and he was the son who inherited the throne. He asked God for wisdom and, as a result, enjoyed extraordinary wealth and blessings. But, Solomon allowed himself to be tempted by women and false gods, thus creating a big ‘ole mess in which the kingdom was split apart.

Whew! Talk about some family drama, right?!

Where’s Dr. Phil for this one??

Yet, Jesus was a descendant of these men and women...

These sinners.

He was related to a host of people who broke every one of the Ten Commandments.

So, why is this included in Scripture?

Because no matter what our pasts are, Jesus came to free us, redeem us and He loves us no matter what.

I read a quote the other week that said, “You will never look into the eyes of a person that God does not love.” Isn’t that beautiful? That truth is confirmed in John 3:16-17, which says, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”

ur family lineage is a part of a large tapestry that showcases od’s love. It may not look the way we think it should look, but if we take a step back and look at it from a different perspective, trusting in od’s infinite wisdom, we can see threads of hope. Love. Redemption. race. Mercy. esus’ own genealogy is an incredible example of His ability to bring beauty from ashes (Isaiah 1 3). nderstanding this genealogy is a good reminder that od can use us, even in our brokenness. The ible tells story after story of those who have tried to rush od, do their own thing, seek their own agenda, hurt others, told lies, broken promises and yet, od’s faithfulness endured.

in a season of waiting – and I HATE waiting. Perhaps you are like me and patience is not one of those life skills that come naturally. If I am completely forthright and honest, patience does not often come to me, even with sincere and dedicated effort. I’m pretty well adjusted to my own time frame and often expect the world to fashion itself around my needs.

No doubt we live in a world of instant gratification which only perpetuates my innate tendency to go, go, go. oth food and information are readily available to most of us at nearly any hour of any day. ur consumer-driven and capitalist culture have built institutions meeting the impromptu and perhaps erratic “needs” we encounter in everyday life. et this season of waiting has challenged me to the core, altogether different from the on-demand world around me.

these narratives unfold, both in our community and on the newsstand; and with great urgency, I want to scream from the pulpit and on the street corner the greatest of rally cries “ o Something!” and “ e the Change ou Want to See!” et, this pregnancy has taught me a great deal about waiting. es, friends, we who profess faith in the Risen Lord are to live the incarnation, being the hands and feet of Christ to the world, to work for justice and peace; but only after waiting and prayer. ames enhagen writes “Christian ministry is more than doing good. Ministry is an act of service performed either consciously or unconsciously in the name of Christ. Ministry is esus Christ expressing his life through us. It is born, therefore, not in activity, but in solitude, where through the spirit we experience the power of life from within.”

What’s the wait? An unknown number of days until the birth of my first child, a son; I have never waited like this before.

This season of waiting I cannot hurry along, despite all my efforts. I’m walking every chance I can, eating pineapple and spicy foods, as well as drinking herbal tea with cayenne; yet, the medical staff and my sweet mother continue to tell me he will come in his own time. There is nothing to hurry along and nothing to be done. nly to wait. And wait with hope.

Prayer and actions are inseparable. efore we act, we must sit in the stillness of prayer, open our hearts to the Spirit and be confronted by od’s loving claim upon us. We cannot rely on our own initiative, no matter how well-intended or goodhearted. We must trust od’s hand at work, sit still in od’s presence and finally act, serve and go, only to participate in what od has already initiated in us and in the world.

Somewhere between the now and the not-yet coming of Christ’s ingdom, our hearts are still broken at the injustices that prevail atrocities born of power abuse and the de-humanization of lives exist around the world and just across the street. of us likes to hear the word “Alzheimer’s.”

We are afraid it is going to strike our families.

As we age, we wonder at times if we ourselves are developing some type of dementia, as we repeatedly forget a name or the reason we walked into a certain room. We frequently hear about someone we know being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. ou may have someone in your family experiencing ongoing difficulties with memory, thinking, reasoning or other cognitive skills. They may or may not already have a diagnosis. etting a medical assessment is important, as well as learning about community resources that can help while on this journey.

A reak Respite Care is available to anyone in the community, and is a small group setting for older adults affected by memory impairment. A reak is under the umbrella of Centenary nited Methodist Church, located at 33 W. Street, Winston-Salem, NC. The Respite program provides a -hour break in the day to family members caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease dementia and operates four days a week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, ridays) from 1 am–3 pm.

Staff and volunteers provide activities, including music, creative arts, gentle exercise, snacks, and a hot lunch.

A reak participants often form close friendships with each other. Laughter and lively conversation are the norm. The group size is intentionally small to allow for more one-on-one attention and a family-type atmosphere. The cost is day.

Participants in the A reak program have mild to moderate memory impairment. They may have lost some prior abilities, but still can enjoy the day. Socialization is stimulating. Caregivers often say their loved one just sits or sleeps when at home all day. etting them out around other people who understand and accept them for the person they are today encourages and uplifts them. amily caregivers say, “My loved one and I have a better life because of this program. The staff and volunteers are happy, kind, and genuinely caring.”

Another caregiver said, “ ou saved my life. ecause of A reak, I was able to keep my husband home. I needed that break.” ou may be someone reading this article who wants to give back—someone in your life had Alzheimer’s. We are always looking for those special people who enjoy being around older adults and want to give a little of their time to help out. We’d love to have you! I promise you will get more out of it than you give.

As one A reak participant often says, “Live, love, laugh and be happy.” The A reak day starts with a hug and ends with a hug. How could it be better than that?

A Voice of Experience

As

a member of the Winston-Salem outh Chorus for ten years, I had thrilling opportunities that are keepsakes I will cherish forever. I joined the Chorus at age eight and was very excited to have the opportunity to be in the opera Street Scene my first year as a member. I fell in love with this art form. Singing became more than just an extracurricular activity for me; it became my passion.

I have such a respect for music and the people who share it. The WinstonSalem outh Chorus is much more than a chorus. It is a place you meet extraordinary people who will become lifelong friends. It is life-changing, because you not only make beautiful music, you learn teamwork, collaboration, confidence, poise, and attention to detail, unlike any other extracurricular activity. Teamwork is essential in chorus because everyone has to be completely in sync to make the magic of music occur. I learned how to read music proficiently, which enabled me to work with professionals to help me constantly improve my skills as a young singer. efore I joined the chorus, I sang in the shower and around my family, mostly to isney music. After becoming a member of the outh Chorus, I was able to sing important musical works, in many different languages, in front of hundreds of people, with professionals, in operas, in a foreign country and in various cities across the country.

radley iang is a rising eighth-grader and has been a member of the Chorus for four years. ur time as members overlapped, and in talking with radley, I learned he had had similar positive experiences.

The outh Chorus gave him the opportunity to be in Piedmont pera’s South Pacific, in the role of the young boy. iang said, “This role gave me a new sense of confidence, because performing in front of over a thousand people was intimidating at first, but once I accomplished that, I felt like I could do anything.” He now reads music with ease, plays the flute and piano, has been in two operas with the Piedmont pera and has traveled to Austria with the Chorus. He also mentioned that he has met so many new, interesting kids from all over the triad. He said he is thankful that the outh Chorus is as multi-cultural as it is and brings so many different types of youth together.

Whether your child is a shower singer like I was, or thinks he or she is destined for roadway, the WinstonSalem outh Chorus is a great organization to join.

It has helped me as an undergraduate at Auburn niversity, studying public relations and business. I know being in this organization for ten years shaped me into being an outgoing, caring individual who will always have a special place for music in my world.

Life is short.

Love is forever.

statistics on hunger in America are staggering.

As the world’s greatest food-producing nation, children and adults face food insecurity, defined as “being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food,” across our country. In 1 , 1 million people struggled with hunger in the nited States, including 13 million children and five million senior adults. Those numbers break down to 1 . million .S. households suffering from food insecurity equaling 1 . of households. Those who are food insecure are often forced to skip meals, eat less at meals, buy cheap non-nutritional food and possibly feed their children, but not themselves. In an effort to fight hunger locally and globally, the CR P (Communities Responding to vercome Poverty) movements began in 1 , when Midwest farm families wanted to share their grain with hungry neighbors in post-World War II Europe and Asia. Although the group has grown on a local and global basis, they have remained focused on assisting those who are food insecure.

This year, the CR P Walk Winston-Salem- orsyth County celebrates its 3 th walk to end hunger. Carol Wilson, chairperson for the CR P Walk, said, “The CR P Walk is a collaboration between Church World Service, which is involved on a worldwide spectrum, Crisis Control Ministry and Sunnyside Ministry, which are both local organizations. The proceeds from the walk are distributed with going to Church World Services, which helps in disaster response, refugee assistance and helping areas in other countries gain access to clean water, to mention a few of their focuses. Locally, Crisis Control and Sunnyside Ministry provide financial assistance to families who are having problems paying for their utilities and in emergency situations. oth groups have food pantries, too; the main difference is that Crisis Control has a full pharmacy to fill prescriptions, and Sunnyside serves only the

areas in the zip codes 1 and 1 .” Last year, our local CR P Walk was third in the nation for funds raised at nearly 1 , , with 1, 1 walkers participating. Texas Pete and low are the lead sponsors of the CR P Walk again this year.

“We Walk Because They Have to Walk” Those involved in CR P Walk have a saying for the reason that they walk “We walk because they have to walk,” meaning that those in other countries who have to walk sometimes miles and miles for food or water are the inspiration for those who choose to participate in the CR P Walk. “ iving to the CR P Walk is an investment in both our local and global community,” said Carol. “ y giving someone a helping hand, you give them the ability to help themselves and others. This year’s walk has a little bit different route than in years past due to the amount of construction downtown. We will start the two miles at ailey Park and follow the Long ranch Trail. We encourage anyone who can walk to come, whether you are an individual or part of a team. We have many faith-based groups who come and walk with us. While we want to raise funds for our cause, with each year, we also want to raise awareness and educate people about the problem of hunger locally and across the world.” nce again, this year’s walk was kicked off by a Lunch and Learn at Home Moravian Church, where team leaders were given packets with information and encouraged to recruit people for their teams.

SOCIAL LIFE: If you got an internship in a new area, I’d give you a week—two, tops—before you go completely insane from spending all of your time with adults. That’s about how long it took me; then I found a group of interns in C who met once a week for dinner at a host family’s house.

Trust me, after a week of sitting at a desk surrounded by adults, you’re going to want to go out in shorts and a T-shirt and talk about something other than your co-workers’ children, what college you are at, or the career that you should supposedly have completely mapped out by now.

There are plenty of cons when it comes to having a full-time summer internship—I’m sure I don’t need to list them—but one thing to appreciate is the no-homework situation. nce you leave that office, you’re free! es, you have decided to give up your summer, but that does not mean you signed up to spend behind a desk. This may be the first time in your life that you have almost complete control over your schedule. If you have a to job, that gives you a solid six hours post-work and possibly some early morning time to do whatever comes to mind.

A good first step is to write down a bunch of stuff you want to do, experience, or accomplish during your summer. Then you need to find a group of people your age and in a situation similar to yours.

If you are in a big city, it should be no problem finding a group of interns; just ask around. ou can find them through a coworker, church, or even the app “Meetup”! nce you have found these people, start a group chat, to make it easy to coordinate group hangouts.

This summer my group went to jazz and folk festivals, C monuments at night, movies, baseball games, and each other’s apartments for game nights. on’t become a drone just because you aren’t at the beach or on a cruise all summer. ou can have just as much fun if you put in a bit of effort.

WORK LIFE: ust like in pretty much any other situation, your acceptance and subsequent success in internships depends on your social skills. es, it can be exhausting. uilding good relationships with your co-workers is extremely important, though, and they must start from a place of respect. There are lots of ways to show respect, but one significant and practical approach is to sacrifice your time.

My motto for an internship workday is, if you aren’t 1 minutes early, you are late, and if you’re late, you’d better be bleeding. My workday started at AM; I arrived at every single day. I was able to set out the newspapers, listen to and transcribe the voicemails, and check my e-mail, all before my boss arrived. There was one other intern in the office, and he was consistently 1 minutes late, even though he lived minutes closer to the office than I did.

I don’t mean to drag the poor guy over the coals; I don’t want you making the same mistakes as he did, because they were mistakes. our co-workers notice when you are late, they just do. Lateness is a sign of disrespect, and it is almost impossible to create successful relationships with this as your foundation. ecause of simple things like showing up early, the difference between my success and the other intern’s was significant—not that it’s a competition or anything. My boss became aware of the respect I had for my job and had no problem letting me go to intern lectures and interviews during work hours; she even gave me a riday off when my family came to visit. Even my co-workers put me in touch with previous employers and co-workers, vouching for me, on introduction. It may seem unnecessary—after all, you are already giving them free labor, but putting in that extra bit of effort will open up a lot of opportunities.

is through unstructured play that children can explore their world and experiment with different approaches, and see what kind of outcomes they get.

It’s through this kind of experience that they learn to navigate an ever-changing social-emotional landscape,” says Steve Siviy, a Neuropsychologist at Gettysburg College, when asked how play effects child development.

Parents are bombarded with messages of all the things they must do to help their children succeed in life. Martial arts to help with discipline, Chinese lessons if they want to succeed in business, dance classes to be well rounded, baseball to learn sportsmanship. At what point does it become too much for a child’s brain to handle? When their entire lives are planned out for them, there is no space for children to practice imagination and learn to be independent. This begs the question: how do parents foster independence in children within an era where it is expected for them to be signed up for a million activities and being busy is considered a good attribute?

The first answer is to take a step back.

Think about what your child truly needs, not necessarily what they want. If they want to play four sports, learn piano, and join a LEGO team—consider how much free time would be left after all

the activities are done. When asked about the prevalence of over-scheduling by today’s parents, Chantal Hayes, licensed psychotherapist at Banyan Tree Counseling who specializes in play therapy for children, states, “I see many kids get so stressed and develop anxiety due to all the demands associated with extra-curriculars.

Instead of scheduling a regimented activity every day, I suggest parents spend more time just being with their children.

Cooking, taking a walk, playing a board game, throwing a ball around outside, all of these ‘together’ activities have tremendous benefits. Not only for children, but for parents, too.”

Another way children learn independence, which can sometimes be a hard concept for modern parents to accept, is to be alone. Children don’t need to be entertained every hour of the day; in fact, this can stifle them from learning the ability to entertain themselves. Exploratory alone time allows their minds to wander and grow in an unrestricted environment.

It can be very beneficial, as well, to allow children to get bored. Being bored is not the enemy; there is something to be said for the creativeness and independence that is born while being bored. When a child is bored, their mind begins to race.

That is

now a spaceship which is taking them on a scientific adventure to explore what types of cheese can be found on the moon. It is this creativity that needs to be encouraged to help children reach their highest potential, both academically and socially.

Above all, remember that children are children, they are not small adults. They will, and should be allowed to, make mistakes. Ideally, children should make a plethora of mistakes; this is part of the natural learning process and allows them not only to learn and grow but to build their confidence. Hayes explains further that “it’s essential for parents to allow disappointments, and to let their children have the opportunity to make their own choices, even if that leads to poor decisions at times. Recent research shows that children of over-controlling or overbearing parents tend to have a more difficult time relating to their peers and adjusting socially, and lack emotional regulation skills in adulthood.” As they learn from their mistakes, their confidence to make decisions independently will grow. There is a fundamental difference between learning not to touch a cactus because your mom told you not to, and learning not to touch a cactus because you tried it and it hurt. The latter will be much more effective as a teaching tool. That isn’t to say you should let your children walk into traffic to teach them that cars are dangerous, but there needs to be some level of teaching through discovery within a safe environment. Not only will these suggestions help the child, but it will also reduce overall stress in the family unit.

FEAR OF THE FUTURE

is the time of year when many high school juniors begin their college campus visits. It’s an exciting time, but it can also be stressful, which reminds me of a moment I had with one teenager, in particular, a few years back.

This young man was about to head off to college for his freshman year. We met at an event, and he didn’t know me personally. I think that’s what made this little exchange possible. He began by emphasizing his stress and apprehension about starting college. He hadn’t told his parents his feelings, because he was afraid he’d disappoint or worry them unnecessarily. He hadn’t told his friends, because he thought they would make fun of him or think less of him for it.

He went on to say he was basically a “slightly” above-average student. He admitted that when it came time his junior year to begin looking at colleges, he was both excited and scared at the same time. He explained, during those campus trips and after reading all the information on colleges, he was mainly afraid he wouldn’t be able to get in. He knew his grades were okay, but not outstanding, as were some of the examples he saw along the tours. Even though the counselors also recommended “safety school” choices, he wasn’t even sure that was a certainty, especially looking at what his peers had accomplished already, and what the incoming freshman applicants looked like.

Ultimately, he made it through the process, applied at a number of colleges and, sure enough, was accepted at one that he liked (although not his first choice). He indicated he thought it was because both his parents were alumni and had some influence on his admission. I told him, the point is, he got in, and that’s all that matters. Unfortunately, he didn’t see it that way, and that’s when he began explaining his current fear.

I remember, he paused for a moment—probably contemplating whether to continue the conversation. Then he told me he wasn’t sure he was smart enough to make it in college. With just those few words, I could tell he was really stressing over it.

I thought about it, and then I began telling him this story about myself long ago, standing in the parking lot at college, just days before classes were to begin my freshman year. It was just my older brother and me at the time. I remember telling my brother a similar story about how I was a bit (I didn’t want to sound too weak) scared about whether or not I had what it takes to get through college and get my degree. My brother was standing on the other side of the car with his arms folded across the roof and he just laughed at me, not sarcastically, but empathetically. Then he told me he had all the confidence in the world I could do this. It was a brief statement and just what I needed at the time. It really resonated with me, and it worked!

I looked at the young man again and gave him my own personal advice. I said I’ve learned that when it comes to education, you get out of it what you put into it. It certainly helps if you’re a smart person to begin with; however, it’s absolutely not a requirement. After all, most “smart” people get that way by reading, studying, researching and experiencing events in life that provide the opportunity for learning new things. As long as he put in the work, maintained his motivation and commitment to obtaining his goal, the odds were heavily in his favor. Finally, I said I couldn’t give him an ironclad guarantee, because life can throw curve balls sometimes, but if I was a betting man, I think this would be a good bet to make.

After staring at the ground the whole time, he finally looked up at me, smiled and uttered one simple word that said it all, “Thanks.” I nodded and said, “Good Luck” and with that, we ended our brief conversation and went our separate ways.

I haven’t seen that young man since, but I like to think he eventually got his degree, and for that I’m grateful.

Just as my brother didn’t realize the impact his enthusiasm had on that fateful evening, our words can have a powerful influence on others. It doesn’t take much, and maybe, just maybe, it’ll help get them back on track toward where they need to be, with renewed confidence. If it worked for this young man, it was well worth it.

What’s worse, my husband and I are both average, too. Even my dog is average. Altogether, we’re an amalgamation of mediocrity.

I’m okay with that now, mostly, but I wasn’t always. Before I was even a parent, there was nothing I loved more than sharing pregnancy horror stories.

My pregnant friends and I would waddle through the mall, bemoaning sciatica and morning sickness, then someone would pull out the story of her vulvar varicosity (go ahead, look it up) and we’d all crash back down to average. Then, it was whose baby smiled first, whose toddler was potty trained (“At nine months old. I swear.”), whose preschooler was reading (on a fourth-grade level). Then, when real school started? Forget about it.

No longer was it good enough to be a good student; a child needed to be Academically Gifted. Then, Academically Gifted wasn’t enough; they needed to be Highly Academically Gifted. Playing on a team was not a big deal unless they played on the Elite Team. Doing well or even – forbid – okay at something is no longer good enough. The only acceptable thing to be is the best.

But, here’s the problem – they can’t all be the best. Sometimes, finding that out is crushing for parent and child alike. Sometimes, we set a bar that may be attainable but is rarely sustainable.

When failure comes – and it always does – we have to deal with the fallout of a child that can’t believe he or she isn’t number one, and the blow to our own egos.

Recently, my middle child (otherwise known as “Best Eight-Year-Old Soccer Player In the World”) found out that she is not, actually, the best eight-year-old soccer player in the world. I said all the right things…this is an opportunity for you to improve, let’s work on things together, this is a great life lesson, pull yourself up by your bootstraps… but I was pretty upset myself. Not just because I knew it was going to shake her self-confidence, but because, shamefully, I was going to have to tell people who asked why she switched teams the truth.

Because she wasn’t quite good enough.

Because she couldn’t keep up. Because she was – not the best. Maybe she’ll get better and maybe she won’t, but can I let her come to terms with that on her own? Can I let her be average?

She will not, most likely, play

professional soccer. My oldest daughter will not, most likely, become a movie star. My son will not, much to his eternal disappointment, become a Jedi. It is doubtful that someone from Random House will read TMoM and offer me a book deal. My husband, pushing 50, will never be a Navy Seal.

A dear friend of mine recently told me the story of her young son, who is on the autism spectrum. While I am surprised if my kid doesn’t score a goal in every game, she’s surprised when her child makes it onto the field without incident. She told me about a test he had taken and done spectacularly well on. There was no braggadocio, no chest puffing – just gratitude for the normalcy of taking a test and amazement for a fantastic result. It humbled me and reminded me of what a gift “average” is.

It is okay for dreams to die. It is okay to be average. It is okay to live a simple life. What it comes down to is how we teach our children to live that life.

Kindness, empathy, honesty, tolerance, gratitude, generosity, graciousness – these are things that elevate average.

No one is going to remember if your child was AG or H-AG or scored the winning run. They will remember what kind of person they were. And, in that, we can all strive to be above average.

INGREDIENTS: 1 pkg. (± 1 lb.) frozen mini-meatballs (turkey or beef) 1 cup carrots, peeled and diced (the purple ones add fun!)

1 cup of onion, diced (frozen is fine) 1 cup celery, diced 1 can white beans 2 tsp. minced garlic 3 tsp. Italian seasoning 6-8 cups chicken or vegetable stock 2 Tbsp. butter 2 Tbsp. olive oil 7-8 oz. alphabet pasta Salt and pepper to taste

1. Melt coconut oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add onion and carrots and cook until softened. Stir in marjoram, flour and seasoning packet from the rice package.

1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat.

Add minced carrots, onions and celery. Cook 5-7 minutes until onion is translucent.

2. Add the stock and simmer about 15 minutes.

Add the alphabet pasta and increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Once at a boil, turn heat back down to medium and simmer until pasta is softened, about 5-7 minutes.

2. Add rice, chicken broth and water; bring to a boil. Cover and lower to a simmer for 15 minutes.

3. Heat heavy cream and milk in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir into the soup. Stir in shredded chicken.

3. In a skillet, add olive oil and brown meatballs (no need to thaw if frozen), turning until browned all over. Add to soup pot and cook another 3-5 minutes.

4. Cook 30 minutes or until the rice is cooked. Season with salt and pepper.

CORN CHOWDER INGREDIENTS: 8 ears corn, husked with silks removed and kernels cut from cob 3 Tbsp. butter 5 slices bacon, cut into ¼-inch pieces 1 medium yellow onion, diced ¼ cup all-purpose flour 2 tsp. minced garlic 5 cups water 1 lb. Yukon Gold potatoes, cut into ½-inch cubes ½ tsp. dried thyme 1 bay leaf Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup half & half 1 Tbsp. honey 3 Tbsp. chopped green onion Shredded cheddar cheese, for serving DIRECTIONS: 1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and bacon and cook, stirring frequently until the onion has softened and just started to brown around the edges, 8-10 minutes. Add the flour and garlic and cook 1½ minutes. While whisking, slowly pour in the 5 cups of water.

2. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly, then stir in corn kernels and potatoes. Add thyme and bay leaf and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a light boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.

3. Remove bay leaf and transfer 1½ cups of the chowder to a blender and blend until smooth. Stir the mixture back into the pot. Stir in half & half and honey.

4. Sprinkle each serving with cheddar and green onions.

In

a world that favors and requires verbal communication over any other form, for a handful of us this mode of speaking may not come as naturally as for the average Jane Doe. Some of us may struggle to find the right words at a given moment. Some of us fight to come up with the perfect way to set words to our thoughts in general. This may be because other people naturally think in images and symbols as opposed to words. Sometimes our thoughts are a bit too abstract to convert them into words—and that’s okay.

Although we live in an extroverted society that praises and promotes verbal communication, there’s still ample space to discover our own medium of communication and expression. Here are multiple avenues the abstract communicator can take to find their voice and be heard.

WRITING. Although writing involves words just like verbal communication does, this is an easier medium, because writing is a solitary action. When the person is alone—especially if they’re introverted—they can channel their thoughts quicker without the pressure of being watched (and possibly judged) by others. They have more time to cement their abstract thoughts and transmit them on paper. Not only that, but because the abstract communicator thinks in images, their writing will tend to be poetic and figurative!

MUSIC. Music comes with or without words. Since they are written, what is said above about words applies to the lyrics separately. Either way, music has always been an outlet for expression. It can be fast or slow, soft and gentle, hard and edgy, peaceful or powerful—it’s up to the artist’s abstract thoughts.

Music is universal, and as long as the composer has a strong message to communicate, his or her message will be heard clearly by any audience.

VISUAL ART. Visual art takes on many different forms: painting, photography, 3D installations, and sculpture. This is one of the greatest mediums for the abstract communicator, because it is easy to translate visual thoughts into something tangible, assuming that the person has artistic ability. The subject of the art piece is the main thing that will communicate the artist’s thoughts. Make it clear and be intentional about your art!

DANCE. Communicate with your body and tell stories with it! Yes, the abstract communicator with dancing abilities will be able to speak their message through dance moves and sequences! The stronger and more distinctive the movements are, the more their audience will tune in and listen. Also, hair, makeup, and wardrobe (requiring other artistic abilities!) make a difference and impact how the audience will receive the speech and understand the conversation of the dancing.

FILM. Filmmaking opens the window of the abstract soul. You can express with words, actors, music, art, and dancing. It’s a conglomerate of artistic, abstract expressions! Most people, especially movie buffs, comprehend film very well because it can either communicate directly or indirectly.

HOW TO DRAW IN LISTENERS Have a strong message to communicate.

Everyone speaks with an intent to communicate something, no matter how light or serious. We all have a goal: for the listener to understand what we’re saying. So no matter what creative medium you choose to express your unique voice in, make sure you have a message and be intentional with it. If you don’t have a clear message, no one will receive what you are projecting in your craft.

Share your mission or story. People love to relate to the creator of something great. How can you express your story through your abstract medium of communication? If your listeners can identify with you, you will win their respect, and they will always listen to you when you speak.

Deviate from the norm. It’s more than okay to be an outlier and step outside of the mainstream. Our minds naturally seek novelty, and anything deviant instantly pops out at us.

This is a characteristic that great leaders have, and others gravitate towards them.

Speak to your audience, not at them. Interact with your audience on an intimate level, not just superficially. Relate to them and share your human side, thereby inspiring your audience.

Although verbal communication is great, the world still needs those abstract communicators to keep things interesting!

Getting Messy:

The Art of Making Art with Kids

has been an integral part of human societies since the days of cave paintings. We see art displayed everywhere; in our museums, our schools, our magazines, even our homes. As much as we love enjoying art, creating art adds an entirely new level of appreciation and culture to our lives. Here are three projects that vary in difficulty and messiness—starting with the least and ending with the most. All of these can be done at home, though it is recommended the second two be done outdoors, unless you are aiming for a Jackson Pollock-themed living room.

Supplies: • Pre-stretched canvas or canvas board • Acrylic or poster paint (Poster paint can crack on canvas when dry, but this can create a fun effect) • Paint brushes • Paint palette / paper plate / recycled egg carton – some type of vessel to put the paint in • Painter’s tape or vinyl stencil (from a vinyl cutter)

Supplies: • Pre-cut wood or Plywood panel • Acrylic paint • Spray paint • Painter’s tape • Balloons • Reusable silicone straw • Thumbtacks or Staple gun • Darts • Drop cloth • Something to prop art piece on • Protective eye wear • Paint clothes

Steps: • If you are using a vinyl cutter, decide what design you want to use and follow your machine’s instructions on cutting it out. This is a great opportunity to use fun fonts to write out children’s names or funny sayings like, “In this house, we chase dreams and dragons” and, “Wash your hands: only you can prevent the zombie apocalypse.”

• If you are using painter’s tape, place it on the canvas in whatever pattern you want.

This could look like something (a flower, or a letter), or it could be completely abstract. Make sure to press the edges down to prevent paint bleeding.

• Paint the entire canvas! This is where you really get to be creative and put in patterns or mix up colors. Really just get crazy and have fun.

• When the canvas is mostly dried, but still slightly gummy, remove the stencils or painter’s tape and enjoy your brand-new piece of art!

Steps: • Place your drop cloth outside in a space where you don’t mind if the paint expands a bit (TIP: not next to your brand new car or house!).

• Place your canvas in the center of the drop cloth. Depending on how you want to work, you can decide to prop it up– but use caution, as this can cause the paint to go further outside of your drop cloth.

• Pick a few paint colors and put them in your choice of palette.

• Dip your brush in the paint and, leaving a glob of paint on the brush, throw it toward the canvas, keeping the brush in your hands.

•If you have traditional craft paint, you can also squirt the paint directly from the bottle onto the canvas.

• For smaller drops of paint, place the paintbrush parallel to the canvas and hit the handle with another paint brush.

• Keep going on this until it feels done.

Steps: • Prep balloons • Place a quarter-size amount of paint into a balloon.

• Using a reusable silicon straw, blow up and tie the balloon.

• Prep panel • Cover the panel with spray paint and allow to dry.

• Create a border (1”-3”) with painter’s tape.

• Attach the balloons using either thumbtacks for softer woods, or staple gun for harder woods. Be very careful during this step, especially when using a staple gun, to avoid premature balloon explosions!

• Prop your art piece against something to keep it upright and start throwing those darts! When all of the balloons have been exploded, remove the balloon pieces and allow it to dry prior to removing the painter’s tape to prevent stray paint drippings.

FINAL STEP FOR ALL: • On the back of all art pieces, make sure to add the name of the artist and the year—for children, add how old they were and what they decided to name the piece.

in town with four of my seven grandchildren makes it easy for me to be more in their lives. My daughters do not take advantage of using my services as a babysitter even though I am more than happy to spend time with these precious little people.

A while back, my daughter who lives in Charlotte asked me to stay with their three while they attended a wedding in Boston. They would be gone for four days. In the past, I would have my husband come with me as three young ones was a lot to handle on my own. His schedule prevented him from coming this time.

I was a bit apprehensive wondering if I could keep up with them. They are respectful and well-behaved, but two boys ages four and seven are quite active, and I am not quite as agile as I used to be. I soon found I had nothing to worry about. I knew my 10-yearold granddaughter would be easy enough. She loves to read, spend time with friends, work on crafts, and have conversations about any and all things.

All of them had LEGO projects, summer workbooks, and new games we could all play. These were very helpful as the rain was an almost daily occurrence.

They have limited amounts of screen time, so movie night is something they look forward to. Of course, agreeing on which movie was a different story. I finally wrote down each of their movie choices and drew one out of a bowl.

The groans of the losers soon subsided, and popcorn made the loss forgettable.

Taking them out to lunch with frozen custard to follow was also a hit.

My biggest realization in all of this was that I can do it alone. They are

no longer toddlers who have to be watched like a hawk. They are fun and funny, helpful and polite, and spending time alone with them gave me a chance to learn more about each of them. Spending days, instead of hours, gave me an insight that comes with keeping up with aspects of their routine. It is fine to fudge a little, but it is a disservice to their parents and, ultimately, to the children to allow them to run the show.

I learned quickly not to be a short order cook. Instead of asking what they would like for dinner, and getting three different answers, I started fixing what my daughter had left on a meal plan list. It was items they were known to like and, though it might not have been their first choice, it was something they would eat.

I found that my late night habits had to be reined in when staying overnight with the grands. Unlike me, sleeping late and moving slower in the morning does not work for them. I surprised my daughter by rallying early, getting all three up and dressed, breakfast eaten, and to school on time with everything they needed for the day. I will admit to not missing the alarm going off at 6:30am when I got back home.

The good news about spending time

with your grandchildren, besides the obvious ones, came in an article I recently read about a study done by researchers from the Women’s Health Aging Project in Australia. It showed a correlation between postmenopausal women who spent one day a week caring for their grandchildren and a lower risk of developing cognitive disorders and Alzheimer’s. The thought behind it is that caring for the little ones may help prevent social isolation that can lead to depression. The study suggests that the bond formed has benefits for both seniors and children.

However, this applies to mental function – several days as caregivers may take a toll on your physical abilities, so everything in moderation.

Another study conducted by the University of Reading found that drinking three glasses of champagne per week can protect your brain from dementia and memory loss. This is one study I can get behind! However, not on the days I am babysitting.

The bottom line is enjoy your time with these little people. Hearing their happy voices greeting you and getting the best hugs is great, but that loving bond you form with them will last a lifetime.

They won’t stay little for long, so make the most of this special relationship.

Are You Really Going to Eat THAT?

you classify yourself as an adventurous eater, a connoisseur of elegant dining, or will you try anything offered up as a challenge? What is the definition of an adventurous eater? Consider when babies transition to food; they’ll try anything put in their little mouths. After viewing the number of poor little unsuspecting kids tasting lemons for the first time, it’s no wonder they develop a pickiness that follows them for years. However, at some point, most people are open to new dishes – some more open than most. Depending on where you’re from, each state has one or more unique foods that may be common to natives but bizarre, or even gag-worthy, to others. If you grew up eating any of these, more power to you. Here goes in no particular order…

Alaska has many places that travelers dream of visiting.

If you get a chance to go there, are you brave enough to try Akutag (also known as Eskimo Ice Cream)? The original recipe consisted of seal or animal fat and whatever wild berries were on-hand. Today’s version adds milk and sugar.

Not sure “yum” is the right adjective for this dish.

Arkansas has its own unique dish – buffalo ribs. No, there’s no meat in this; it’s a fish, a buffalo fish. A freshwater fish, it gets its name from its size ranging from 39 pounds to a record catch of 62 pounds. Or, you can forget the protein and order a plate of chocolate gravy and biscuits.

Illinois has its own version of gravy, in the form of gravy bread. This is not a sandwich; it’s just bread dipped in a spicy beef sauce. Or, if visiting the state fair, try a strip of chocolate-covered bacon with sprinkles (of course).

How about a brain sandwich from Indiana? Made of pig brains breaded and fried. Or, try fried sauerkraut balls at the state fair.

Massachusetts offers up marshmallow fluff in its famous fluffernutter sandwich. Slather marshmallow fluff with

peanut butter onto white bread for a gooey, globby mess of a sandwich.

Traveling through Mississippi? Try a meal with a side of Koolicle; it’s a pickle soaked in Kool-Aid. Continuing the pickle dishes, Minnesota has a sandwich known as a pickle dog. It consists of a pickle covered in sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing, all wrapped up in a thick slice of roast beef. Try another favorite, deep-fried cheese curds.

Ohio has a couple of native dishes worth trying. Cincinnati chili five-way is a unique combination of spaghetti covered with chili and then loaded down with cheese, beans and onions. Actually, there’s a scale for this dish – the twoway version consists of spaghetti and chili, three-way adds cheese to the mix, four-way piles on the onions and then the ultimate, five-way version with beans added to everything else. For a different breakfast meat, try Goetta, a mash-up of ground pork or beef with grain, oatmeal and spices. Fried up crispy and served on the side with eggs.

In Rhode Island, try the chop suey sandwich which is just what it sounds like – chop suey between two slices of bread.

In Tennessee, you gotta’ try Elvis’ favorite sandwich – fried peanut butter, bacon and banana.

And finally, probably the most artery-clogging dish of them all. Found at the Texas state fair, try if you can stand it fried butter. To make it, freeze a slab of butter, wrap it in biscuit dough and fry.

Thinking about trying any of these yourself? After reading through these dishes, doesn’t a nice green salad sound good? Yep, thought so!

The Pressures of College Alternative Learning Opportunities

One

of the most popular questions young teenagers are asked in today’s society is, “Where do you want to go to college?” For some, this question can be incredibly stressful, due to the pressure of getting into a reputable college or university. For others, this question is frustrating, because college will not necessarily be the best option for varying reasons. Some people have a skill that does not require a four-year education beyond high school; some people cannot afford to attend college and do not plan on a profession that easily allows for repayment of student loans; and some people are simply not qualified enough to be accepted into an advanced educational program after high school.

So, what do all these youngsters plan to do after high school? Many have no plan at all, and likely, the reason for this is lack of knowledge about all the options on the table aside from a four-year school.

For example, many community colleges offer twoyear associate degrees, as well as trade school options that may be exactly what that next step should be.

Students who enroll in programs through community college sometimes end up transferring their credits to a four-year university, but those who do not also find great reward in their educational accomplishments. With so much on the line regarding financial responsibility, it never makes sense to invest in a four-year plan unless you know it is the right place for you.

All high schools offer counseling for students, and anyone who is unsure of the next step should take advantage of this service. These counselors understand the pressure society puts on our youth to seek an advanced degree, and they also understand that that may not be the right path for everyone. Based on a student’s grades, interests

and skills, counselors can offer several paths for consideration aside from a four-year program.

Why is eliminating this pressure so important? There are many answers to this question, but possibly the most important reason is because this pressure can lead some kids to make very bad decisions. Unfortunately, kids seem to have easy access to what they perceive as stress-relieving methods, and these include alcohol, drugs and reckless behavior. When kids feel added pressure, they may or may not be able to handle that pressure as well as a mature adult. They do not see the big picture and look for an easy outlet for their stress.

While asking about college plans is always well-intentioned, we may need to start thinking about what we are really saying to our kids, or how the pressure to succeed the same way we did may affect them. It may be that simply asking them about their interests and goals for the future will lead you both to a discussion about what may be the best route to take to make everyone happy after high school!

Dining Do Good through Food at Little Richard’s BBQ

of us have never experienced what real hunger feels like. We may not always have what we want to eat or be able to eat exactly when we want to, but most Americans do not know what it is to be starving. But for 795 million people in the world, it’s a grim reality of everyday life.

Little Richard’s BBQ’s co-owner, Stephen Karagiorgis, is deeply disturbed by the idea of someone going to bed hungry at night. “For 26 years, my family’s business has been a source of great quality food for the Triad. We’ve taken a lot of pride in what we do, but when I learned of the organization ‘Feed My Starving Children,’ I knew there was something else we could be doing.”

The goal is certainly achievable, especially now that Meal for Meal Mondays is a weekly event! “Once we get to our goal, Little Richard’s BBQ will host a food packing event,” announced Stephen. “I’m projecting that we’ll be able to coordinate that by late spring or early summer 2019. We will need everyone’s help to make it happen.”

That “something else” began on June 4th. “Mondays at Little Richard’s BBQ are now ‘Meal For Meal Mondays,’” explained Stephen. “Every meal that is sold in our restaurants on Mondays is matched with a meal for a starving child in the world. To put it simply, with the help of the community, we’re doing good through food.”

Initially, the campaign began as an every-other-Monday event, but has grown so much in popularity, Little Richard’s now offers it on a weekly basis. “In our first two months of Meal for Meal Mondays, we were able to donate 10,525 meals. Our customers have really embraced the concept, and we are excited about the impact we can make together…because this is definitely a bigger campaign than what Little Richard’s can do by itself. This is a community effort,” said Stephen.

Little Richard’s BBQ is no stranger to giving in the community.

They have a long-standing history of service to the Triad, and for 19 years they have sponsored the Thanksgiving dinner at Samaritan Ministries. But Meal For Meal Mondays allows for a bigger, more global way of giving. In fact, after more than two decades of local giving, this is the first international giving campaign that Little Richard’s has participated in.

“Children don’t get to choose the environment they are born in,” Stephen elaborated. “I heard of this amazing organization that is working to feed children, and I loved their mission. My heart hurts over the images of children born in impoverished, war-torn countries, who have so little. Despite our country’s issues, we are still a society with much to be thankful for. I am humbled that we can serve in this way. Our initial goal is for us to provide 100,000 meals through Feed My Starving Children, and we only hope to grow from there.”

“Feed My Starving Children is based on Psalm 146:7,” explained Stephen. “It says, ‘He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free…’” Little Richard’s BBQ embraces that mission.

Peanut Butter S’mores Pie

BY SARA WILES S’mores, in my opinion, are the perfect dessert to take you from summer into fall. They can be enjoyed year-round. Whether you enjoy one made over a backyard bonfire or snuggled up fireside in your living room, S’mores are so simple and can be made with very few ingredients.

But, what happens if you want to elevate your S’more-loving palate? Or perhaps you’re looking for a way to have the same taste without the mess.

Enter this decadent Peanut Butter S’mores Pie. The combination of this classic sweet treat with added peanut butter richness will have you coming back for more. But, fair warning, this pie is rich! Don’t be surprised if you practice quantity control with every bite.

IDEAS TO CONSIDER: For best serving, consider chilling your pie in the fridge overnight. Your slices will become easier to cut, but it may be a little harder to eat.

The peanut butter is optional but does add a level of richness to the pie.

Consider warming the peanut butter prior to assembling to make it a little easier to spread.

PEANUT BUTTER S’MORES PIE INGREDIENTS: ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature ½ cup white sugar ¼ cup packed brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 6 graham crackers crushed into crumbs ½ cup peanut butter 2, 4-ounce chocolate bars 1, 7-ounce jar of marshmallow crème DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Cookie Base: Beat butter and both sugars with a mixer until light and fluffy.

Mix in the egg and vanilla. Mix in flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in graham cracker crumbs.

3. Assemble Your Base: Reserve ¼ of your cookie base and set aside. Use the remaining cookie base and press firmly into the bottom of a pie dish or springform pan.

4. Assemble Your Pie: Layer the base with chocolate bars, either chopped up or broken apart. Next, layer with peanut butter followed by marshmallow crème.

I layered these twice to have a deep pie. Once layering with peanut butter and marshmallow crème is complete, top with remaining cookie base crumbled over the top of the pie.

5. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown on top. Let cool completely for best serving results.
