My husband had no idea 29 years ago just how far he’d be tested on that one! This month I will have been married to the man of my dreams for 29 wonderful years. Like any couple, we’ve had our shares of ups and downs. To say marriage is easy would be a lie, but what in life worth having is ever easy? Overall, we’ve been very blessed and even when things weren’t great, we managed to be there for each other. While I’ve always known what a gem God had sent me, I could never have imagined just how amazing he would be in a time of distress. A cancer diagnosis and all that goes along with it really rocks your world and could test the best of relationships. Fortunately for me, he has been my rock and constant cheerleader from the second we were given the news. Happy 29th anniversary, Tim! Thank you for loving me and being the best partner in life anyone could ever hope for!

Cancer robs us of so many of our loved ones. My family has had more than its share of losses because of it. My nephew Ryan would have been 21 this year, and it’s still so hard to believe he is gone. Please support cancer research in whatever ways you can. While

Through the Better Business Bureau, homeowners have access (online and by phone) to crucial information about a company’s reputation BEFORE investing in them. Checking with BBB’s business database is an initial step in the buying/ hiring process that consumers can’t afford to skip, literally.

Homeowners can choose a business that has been proven trustworthy, and rest assured that their hard-earned money is safe. With roughly 50,000 business records on companies throughout northwest NC, the BBB database is a free source that can offer much-needed insight for homeowners.

Historically, 8 of the top 10 most-inquired-about businesses types in the BBB directory provide work around the home: painting contractors, heating contractors, roofers, general contractors, plumbers, construction & remodeling services, heating & air conditioning, and home builders. Within the BBB directory, consumers have access to any complaints a specific business has had (and how they responded), how long the company has been in business, if they have the appropriate licensing needed and read any customer reviews that have been left for the business. Most important, consumers can find a company’s BBB rating, and whether they are BBB-Accredited (the companies that qualify for this distinction are vetted by BBB and meet their eight Standards for Trust). This information gives the homeowner the power to feel confident in their choice of service provider.

1. Ask for multiple quotes. You should always shop around and get at least three quotes from different businesses. Make sure all bids consider the same set of criteria. Remember that the lowest bid may not necessarily be the best bid; if one bid is significantly lower than the others are, the contractor may be cutting corners or may not understand your work requirements.

Use BBB’s Request-a-Quote app (bbb.org/ask/request-aquote) to hear from several reputable providers.

2. Get it in writing. Always get estimates in writing and never let any work begin without a written and signed contract. Do not be pressured into signing an agreement before you are ready and make sure you read and understand everything before signing. The contract should include contact information, start and complete dates, a detailed description of the exact work to be done, any material costs, payment arrangements, and warranty information. Specify who is to obtain necessary building permits and who is responsible for cleanup. Make sure all verbal promises are included in the contract. Ask how much work will be subcontracted and ask for information on the subcontractors. Ask questions if you do not understand any part of the contract. Never sign an incomplete or partially blank contract.

3. Verify license and insurance. Always be sure that the company you decide to work with has the necessary licenses and insurance to work in your region. Your local BBB can help. Once you have your contractor’s insurance information, call the carrier to confirm appropriate coverage for worker’s compensation, property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents.

4. And finally, always check the BBB Directory before you make a final decision on a provider. You can research reviews, complaints, and the objective letter grade rating for each company. And you can always call 336.725.8348 or visit bbb.org/NWNC with any of your questions or concerns.

dream house is found. With bated breath, you negotiate, praying the seller will agree to your offer. After weeks of paperwork, an inspection and appraisal (both of which were even more nerve-wracking than the price negotiation), the keys are in your hands. You have your house.

Your trips to Target will never be as intense as the days following a home purchase. Everything from shower liners to trashcans to cleaning supplies—you will wonder whether you’re bringing more into the new house from your moving truck, or from Target’s Home Department. As you lug boxes, lay down drop cloths to paint bedrooms, and begin to put your own signature touch on your new space, you may find yourself often pondering “Does this feel like home?”

Without question, this is an exciting time. From decorating decisions to meeting the new neighbors to hosting your first dinner party—it’s all new and fun.

But when does it transition from being a house to being a home? Some fun ideas include: 1. Bring a little of the outdoors indoors with some fun, colorful plants that help give life to a space.

2. Include sentimental accent pieces throughout. Whether it’s a coaster you made for grandpa when you were eight; or an heirloom quilt passed down through generations— use accents that have special meaning to you.

3. Warm up your new house with rugs, pillows, and throws— soft fabrics and bright colors that help a space feel cozy.

4. Display family photos and favorite artwork.

The Financial Bottom Line of Building a Home

BY LISA S.T. DOSS One image, a picture, could be your ideal dream. You’ll love the appearance, the covered porches, the large windows, and the well-designed floor plan. A price to build the house will be the first number you hear; however, it is only one piece of a much larger financial bottom line. Before you take one more step towards your dream, find out as much information as you can about your responsibility before, and after, construction.

Meetings will take place. Questions will be asked. Ideas will be swapped, and yet, you may leave the room not knowing the full picture, and how those decisions will have affected the cost of your home. New construction can be an overwhelming experience. It is important to know how much money you will need to contribute at the beginning, and at the end, of your construction loan.

UNDERSTAND YOUR CONTRACT Builders and home construction companies both work under different types of contracts. It is important to find out what is included in your contract, and what is deemed “extra.”

For instance, most basements do not include wall outlets or drains. With every agreement, you are adding to the cost of your mortgage. Make sure these additions are put in writing, and that you have a copy for your file. In the process of construction, you want to ensure you received what you agreed to pay for.

CLOSING COSTS Many banking institutions have changed their construction loan process to a one-time closing, occurring at the start of construction. On average, closing costs can comprise two to five percent of the total purchase price of your home. If your down payment does not equal 20 percent of the total price, 28 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

you’ll be required to add private mortgage insurance, known as PMI, to your mortgage payments. Before you sign the first document, ask your banking representative what amount will be expected at closing.

One benefit to a one-time closing is that the interest rate and your mortgage payments are already set, and it will also divulge the breakdown of principal and interest, taxes, insurance and private mortgage insurance. Additionally, for every $10,000 you bring to closing, it will reduce your mortgage payment, usually, by $100 a month.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY DURING CONSTRUCTION Each month during construction, your banking institution will send you a bill which covers the interest on money that has been withdrawn or borrowed, based on your locked-in interest percentage. This amount will also include monies toward escrow; however, this is not the only time you will be asked to pay for escrow and insurance.

FINALIZING CONSTRUCTION Eagerly, you will ask, “When do you foresee our moving date?” Yes, receiving the keys is a wonderful, overwhelming feeling of closure. The builder or project manager will walk through your house with you, review a booklet of warranties, and discuss whether the construction of your house was under or over budget. If there were additional expenses, this amount will come out of your pocket.

Remember, the construction loan is set and finalized.

You’ll meet with your banking institution to review the final document and appraisal. Banking institutions will ask for over 12 months of insurance and escrow costs up front; you can be well prepared for this amount by asking your loan representative what to expect.

THE PIGGY BANK By the time the last check is signed, you will feel that once-large piggy bank is almost depleted of weight and rattles. It’s a smart decision not to leap into a new home construction without preparation. Banking institutions will ensure you are financially prepared.

Prepare to divulge your financial portfolio early in the process; therefore, save as much money as possible, so as not to have just the dream of a new home, but to afford the personalized touches. Yes, you’ll want a new chair and lamp, matching curtains, an area rug or two, ceiling fans, and toilet paper holders, which didn’t come with the house. Yes, you’ll want to go shopping! And, as you know, shopping takes money!

Is My Home Structurally Sound?

Like anything in life, you want your home built on a strong foundation, as it truly serves as the basis for anything built on it.

The more secure, stable and solid it is, the more confident and at peace you feel. For a multitude of reasons, your home’s foundation may begin to crack, sink and settle over time, in turn creating distraction from your life’s happenings.

7 SIGNS THAT YOU HAVE A FOUNDATION PROBLEM: 1. Stair-step cracking on exterior of home.

This is a tell-tale sign of foundation settlement. As your home continues to settle further, vertical cracks may widen, indicating that the wall is rotating outward.

2. Leaning chimneys.

A more dramatic sign of settlement is a chimney separating from the rest of the home. Sometimes chimneys are built on a foundation that is not connected to the rest of the home, making them even more at risk of settlement.

3. Doors & windows out of square.

First signs of settlement usually are displayed at the weakest point of the wall, such as a door or window.

4. Drywall cracks.

Drywall cracks off of the corners of doors or windows are a good indicator of settlement, and may be more obvious in the uppermost levels of the house.

5. Cracks in the basement walls.

Horizontal cracks near the middle of the wall or stair-step cracks at the corners are common signs that the foundation walls are starting to bow inward.

6. Pushing-in at the bottom of the wall.

If the pressure from outside of the basement wall becomes more severe, your basement walls may begin to slide inward.

7. Sagging, bouncy or unlevel floors above the crawl space.

If you are noticing sloping floors or a gap between the floor and interior walls, it could mean the columns have settled below the floor system. It could also be a sign that the existing columns are too far apart or that the floor joists and girders are weak.

7 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD FIX YOU OUND ION: 1. The problem will get worse.

A foundation problem never gets better on its own— only worse—and as it does, it’s going to cost more to fix.

2. Resale value.

Who wants to buy a home with a foundation problem? Nobody. In fact, the Real Estate Seller Disclosure Act requires that necessary foundation repair be disclosed to potential home buyers. Realtors tell us they are forced to discount homes with foundation structural defects 10-20% to make a sale.

3. Appearance.

Foundation problems can cause ugly cracks, not only in the foundation itself, but inside the home as well.

4. Door and window operation.

As the foundation fails to hold the house where it should be, your house sinks, settles, and moves—this causes doors and windows to stick and jam.

5. Water intrusion.

Cracks let in water, or at the very least, moisture, which can damage your living space in a variety of ways.

6. Safety.

Foundations collapsing, chunks of brick veneer falling off the house, and other serious safety hazards can and have happened.

7. Critters like cracks.

Insects and rodents can get into your home through cracks in your foundation, becoming uninvited house guests.

Throughout the year, the soil becomes compacted and covered with thatch a thick layer of roots, stems, and debris that blocks water, oxygen, and nutrients from reaching the soil. Using a core aerator to remove plugs of soil allows for significantly better seed growth, and for oxygen, water, and fertilizer to reach the grass roots. It is essential to do this every fall!

Leaf removal. After all, it’s fall, right? Once leaves start to fall it’s essential to blow or rake them off your lawn as often as possible. Leaves prevent sunlight from reaching your lawn, while also holding in moisture, which can do severe damage to the overall condition of your lawn.

How Green is Your Home?

Electric bills. Water bills. The rates seem to be increasing, as well as the total month’s usage. If you have ever wanted to follow a “greener” footprint, consider changing how your home is impacted by sunlight, heat, leakage, and the use of water. You may be surprised to find eco-friendly practices do not always take fancy gadgets or require great expenses.

In the name of saving money, you can rely on the following practices to lessen your home’s impact on the environment LED LIGHTS: Those who suggest that a compact fluorescent lamp or light (CFL) is energy-saving, are correct; however, it is important to know CFLs also contain toxic mercury, which complicates their disposal, and questions their use. The safest choice is the light-emitting diode, known as a LED light. While a CLF light will last 8,000 hours, LEDs may exceed 24,000 hours, and save you over $500 each year.

After you replace a LED light, you can either throw it in the trash or recycle it.

SOUTH FACING WINDOWS: We all have one room in our home that is difficult to maintain at a comfortable temperature. Most likely, the room in your home is facing south. Instead of turning up the air conditioning or heat, the solution is to ask, “Do I use blackout drapes, sun-controlled films over the glass, or ask how efficient my windows are?”

With other warm rooms in the home, especially the kitchen, a similar thought process can help you stay comfortable and ease your energy bill.

PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT: One of the most useful tools in your home is a programmable thermostat.

Depending upon the season, you can “set” your thermostat to a comfortable temperature while you are in the home, and thus ease your bill while you are sleeping and at work. With the ease of your smart phone, you can install an “Internet thermostat,” which can be remotely changed by providing new instructions or scheduling each day of the week.

INSULATE YOUR ATTIC: The attic is one location we rarely venture into, due to the excessive heat of summer or the frigid temperatures of winter. Experts claim the attic can 38 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

exceed a 50-degree temperature difference. Without a tight seal, the air in your attic can affect your HVAC’s thermostat and increase your usage. The first step is to ensure your attic is properly insulated. If you are seeking the ability to use the space and save money, too, consider investing in an attic fan, and possibly putting foil on the walls and ceiling. Various other options are also available.

TANKLESS WATER HEATER: If you have a water heater, the electric or gas will heat up to 70 gallons of water for your eventual use. This implies your water heater is wasting energy. A better option is to install a tankless water heater, which will only heat the water when needed. As a smaller unit, it will last longer and benefit your overall annual savings.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT APPLIANCES: The Energy Star label verifies to customers that its product—such as a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, oven or refrigerator—saves water and energy. Volunteers Are a Lifeline at Times of Crisis

Domestic violence happens anytime, anywhere, and often with no warning signals. The volunteer program at Family Services includes a dedicated, welltrained team that covers the crisis phones after work hours and provides access to emergency support and shelter, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Meet a few of the staff and volunteers: Linda Witherspoon is a ictim Advocate Case Manager, and in her words acts as “one of the first lines of assistance.” Linda shared that she provides resources for victims and families in crisis by assisting with court advocacy, resource links, and providing a listening ear. She is also bilingual, allowing her to reach community members who may not know where to start or who may feel that language is a major barrier to seeking help. Her position allows her to work with a dedicated group of volunteers. “I do this work because it is time to stop the silence and shame of domestic violence. I do this for my children and our young people. I do this to return stolen voices,” Linda explained.

Susan W. Wiles is on staff at Family Services as the Senior Administrator and Customer Service Assistant. In addition to being the first person most people encounter at Family Services Gateway offices, she volunteers on the Sexual Assault Crisis Line. As a volunteer for Family Services’ Sexual Assault Crisis Line, she acts as a volunteer victim advocate when a sexual assault victim comes to the Novant or Baptist Hospital emergency room. She advocates for the victim in

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month dealing with staff, law enforcement and sometimes family. “Our main function is to ensure the patient is comforted and, above all, realizes that what happened is not her fault,” Susan stated. Information provided by Family Services is given to the patient and reviewed with them before they leave. Susan said, “The reason I have volunteered for the past 14 years is that I quickly became aware of the support I could be to victims. Left on their own, they usually turn inward and blame themselves for this horrific crime.

I encourage counseling at Family Services because it makes a huge difference in their recovery.”

Candice Miller is a ictim Advocate Case Manager for Family Services Children’s Advocacy Center. The Children’s Advocacy Center is a safe, neutral, child-friendly environment where children, some as young as three years old, and their families receive support and services that are needed as a result of child maltreatment, such as child abuse, sexual assault, or neglect. Candice indicated that her role is to create a warm and friendly environment that promotes openness and trust. As an advocate, she meets with the non-offending caregiver and assesses the overall needs of the family, while helping to reduce trauma for a child and family members and to improve outcomes. She also assists the volunteer program with scheduling for the volunteer sexual assault and domestic violence crisis lines, distributing and receiving crisis phones, volunteer training, and documentation. “ olunteers are valuable

to Family Services,” she explained. “ olunteers assist with the hospital calls and provide victims with resources.

I want to be a part of making a positive impact on our children, families, and the community as a whole.”

Interested in volunteering? olunteer training is provided bi-annually for new volunteers and as a refresher for the current volunteers. The program covers crisis intervention for domestic violence and sexual assault, and includes training on active listening skills (empathy for callers); resources available, including shelter; details on danger assessments and safety planning guidelines (who to tell, code words, etc.); hospital visits for sexual assault victims; and role-playing opportunities. September 14th, the Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina celebrated its 12th year in existence with the Birthday Blast 2 17 fundraiser at the Millennium Center in downtown Winston-Salem. The Children’s Law Center provides a voice for children involved in high- conflict custody cases and domestic violence cases.

When a judge appoints the CLC to advocate for a child’s best interests, a staff attorney or volunteer attorney, often assisted by a student from the WFU School of Law Child Advocacy Clinic, will investigate and appear for the child in court proceedings. In 2 1 alone, the CLC advocated for 319 children.

Birthday Blast attendees were treated to a buffet of hors d’oeuvres prepared by Millennium Center owner Greg Carlyle and The Porch itchen and Cantina. Executive Director Iris Sunshine presented the Pro Bono Attorney award to Lorraine Mortis and the Outstanding Supporter award to the NC Bar Foundation. CLC Director of Operations Amy uhlman presented the olunteer Advocate Award to David Sutton. Living legend Wake Forest University Provost Emeritus Ed Wilson delighted the crowd with a reading of “The Children’s Hour,” a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Music was provided by The Unbroken Circle.

They rarely (if ever) work. While they move remove the odor from OUR sense of smell, cats have much better noses than we do but all is not lost! For clothes, a couple of cycles with plain old white vinegar usually does the trick. For furniture, well again, that’s a different matter. You can remove the smell from being obvious to you, but for a cat, it’s unlikely you’ll ever remove it so well that they forget about it.

One of the cats scratches her claws on the carpet. What is the best tactic to eliminate this recurring problem? Obviously throwing things at her doesn’t work.

They say cats hate water and a simple spray bottle can solve such unwanted behaviors. Unfortunately, every cat I’ve ever owned has never minded water, so the spray bottle has never worked for me. A cardboard scratch pad is a great distraction, especially if you shake a bit of catnip on it. She’ll be flying high in kitty wonderland.

you have a cat, you know you don’t really have a cat. They have you. Living with a feline beast means expecting the unexpected and adjusting a few of your previous, pre-cat habits. If you’re new to the world of cats, you may benefit from a little insight from a lifelong crazy cat lady.

How can we have a cat accept changes without showing his/her anger and peeing on everything?

Cats are creatures of habit, and they do not like change (unless you’re offering tuna instead of their regular food, then they are okay with it). Any changes made have to be made methodically and very, very slowly. Which can be a challenge. For instance, if you need to move the litter box, experts say to move it a few inches at a time until you get it to where you want it to be, over the course of a few days. Admittedly, my method has been to move the litter box, find the cat, and put him or her in it, expecting they will figure it out from there. But the bottom line is, cats just don’t like change. Forcing it upon them will result in some unwanted behavior. ust be patient and give them time to adjust.

How do you remove the stench from cat urine?

Especially on clothes or on a couch?

The simple answer you don’t. You can spend a fortune on pet odor removers that promise to remove cat urine.

You pet her. Sorry, cats are notoriously stubborn and if she wants to be petted, then, yep! She’s gonna get petted, even if she has to do it herself against your leg, your sleeve, the wall or whatever her adoration is targeted towards.

With a female and male cat living together, is there ever harmony instead of aggressive fighting and chasing during the night?

First, a question Are they both fixed? You don’t want a bunch of little kittens running around you will have to find homes for. Second, it doesn’t matter if they are male and female, male and male, or female and female. They will occasionally fight. And whether it’s in play or in a moment of aggression, they will have chases throughout the house during the night. Heck they’ll do that even if they are an only-cat! A word of advice close your bedroom door lest the kitty races have a track that leads right across your face or stomach.

Neither is a fun experience at 2 AM. How to change the habits of a cat—walking on the kitchen counter tops (this really grosses me out) and other spaces (bathroom and bedroom), knocking things over?

In all my years of having cats, I’ve only ever had one who didn’t jump on the kitchen counter. And like you, it grosses me out. I should have taken out stock in Lysol and Clorox years ago, but it’s the Lysol and Clorox wipes that I keep handy on my counter that are now just a part of my routine, every time I prepare a meal in the kitchen. And honestly whether you have pets or not, it’s a good practice to wash down your counters before you cook, anyway.

As far as the cats knocking things over do. Sometimes, cats can be jerks.

Peace Haven Family Dentistry’s talented trio Dr. Houston Symmes, Dr. Robert Wilkinson and Dr. Phil Golden get together to talk family, they may share stories about their own loved ones at home. Eventually, however, they’ll get around to mentioning news of children or even grandchildren of some of their favorite, long-time patients. That’s just what family does.

“Even though it seems like a clich , we want to treat everybody like they are our family,” says Dr. Symmes, who joined the established practice in 2 15. “That’s why we used the word family’ in our new business name.”

As the newest member of the team, Dr. Golden merged his practice with Peace Haven earlier this year, and the transition has been a fun one for staff and patients alike! Where Music Molds the Future

une 2 17, members of the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus shared the life-changing experience of singing in New York City’s historic Carnegie Hall with their Artistic Director, Dr. Sonja Sepulveda, who knows the prestigious venue well.

“I was asked to be the conductor in residence for Carnegie,” explains Dr. Sepulveda, who joined this talented group in 2015. “I wanted to bring my choir so they could sing wonderful music with a professional orchestra.”

While being slightly smitten with the ambiance of Carnegie Hall (and yes, knowing the Beatles had once played there!), the group toured New York City for five days. Besides intense rehearsals, their itinerary included seeing the beloved Broadway show, Aladdin, and the excitement of meeting the cast backstage.

While feeling the unmistakable heartbeat of this dynamic city, their experience instilled the favorite motto of their leader “If you can dream it, you can make it happen if you never give up!

“The singers could not believe they were doing this!” smiles Dr. Sepulveda. “It put a personal twist on the cast for them they could see the person behind the character, and it also showed them you have to try and try, and you might just get to Broadway. The personal stories of success that they heard were very inspiring!”

Many of the Winston-Salem students have already decided to audition when they get older, having seen that the people on stage were much like them talented, driven, and passionate. Also while in New York City, the group performed a concert at Saint ohn the Divine, with singers made up of members of the WSYC, the

Palmetto Singers, and several students from Salem College. The Carnegie Hall concert, conducted by Dr. Sepulveda, featured about 2 singers including WSYC members and three adult choirs, performing the Rutter Requiem, and accompanied by the New England Symphonic Ensemble.

“Singing with older singers gives the youth choir role models for behavior and for choral singing,” says their vivacious leader. “It teaches good behavior and professionalism a slingshot up the ladder to understanding and knowledge!”

While the true beauty of the chorus is that it allows young people to find their place and their identity as individuals, music also opens doors for friends, explains Dr. Sepulveda, describing how young musicians learn life lessons while reaching out to others.

new heights. They kicked off the 2 172 18 school year with 7 members, ranging in age from eight to 18, third grade through 12th grade. Four different ensembles make up the total chorus, which includes the Residential Ensemble, Touring Ensemble, Young Women’s Ensemble, and Young Men’s Ensemble.

Though they may hail from varied walks of life, they share the very powerful bond of their passionate love for music.

“By Christmas, everyone will have reached the same higher plane of understanding, and the beauty of the music will have a chance to shine. Music is freedom!” says the very proud Dr. Sepulveda.

“Everyone in the choir loves music, and that is a great feeling to be in a group where everyone understands that feeling,” she says, also knowing the feeling of belonging to a family of musicians. In addition to her role with the WSYC, Dr. Sepulveda is also the Director of Choral Activities and a teacher of Theory at Salem College in Winston-Salem and conducts the Salem Chamber Choir, Chorale, and SuperTonix.

During the year the chorus will perform with the Winston-Salem Symphony and UNC School of the Arts and is excited to be collaborating with The Enrichment Center for both winter and spring concerts. Some of the center’s Special Needs adult members will sing along with WSYC ensembles on several numbers, offering a wonderful teaching opportunity for diversity and inclusion. This is a shining example of how the group forms bonds across all humanity, engaging new friends along the way, and exploring their own selves through the love and language of music.

The group’s mission has always been to reach youth from diverse backgrounds and enrich their lives by inspiring excellence in what they love most music. Now their excitement and enthusiasm turn to the start of a promising new year with the chorus, and Dr. Sepulveda looks forward to helping the newer members and encouraging the older singers towards

BY DEBBIE LINVILLE Each month I spotlight two books guaranteed to delight readers and provide fun activities to further extend the meaning of each reading experience. With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a -year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

Autumn Splendor Autumn is often called “fall” in the United States because this is the time of year when deciduous trees shed their leaves, resulting in a magnificent, annual cascade of red, purple, orange, yellow, tan, and brown. Walking through the park under a canopy of color or jumping into a freshly raked pile of crunchy leaves are two activities we enjoy during this time of year. But how do leaves turn colors and why do they fall off the trees? (From the New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry ) 1. Leaves need sunlight, air, water, and chlorophyll to make food (sugar) for the tree. During the spring and summer, leaves serve as factories where most of the food that a tree needs to grow is manufactured.

2. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. . In autumn, because of changes in length of daylight and changes in temperature, leaves stop their food-making process to prepare for winter.

4. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the other colors in the leaves (mainly red, yellow, orange, and tan) begin to appear.

5. As trees prepare for winter, they reduce themselves to their toughest parts stems, trunks, branches, and bark. The tree

saves energy by getting rid of the leaves.

In addition to the transforming autumn landscape, other changes are taking place in nature, too. A host of animals scurry about, gathering food for the coming winter in their nests or dens; some storing fat on their bodies. Overhead, some species of birds and butterflies head south to escape the falling temperatures, while furry land animals grow thicker coats to keep warm; some even hibernate for the season. Festivals and other activities revolve around the harvesting of the season’s crops pumpkins for pies and ack-o-Lanterns; apples for cider and cakes; bales of hay for wagon rides and campfire seating roasting marshmallows until they are just slightly charred on the outside and gooey in the middle!

Award-winning Douglas Florian is the talented poet and artist of this compilation of fanciful poems about all things autumn falling leaves, ripe apples, cool days, southbound geese, etc.

His playfulness with language is sure to delight readers! Invented words (e.g., owlphabet and fallicopters), descriptive spellings (e.g. industree and hi-bear-nation), and changes in fonts and type ensure that reading is a bushel of fun.

Florian, who often uses the natural world as the subject for his work, compliments his lively poetry with childlike watercolor and colored-pencil art to highlight such autumn sightings as a single, reddish-purple apple lying on the sun-kissed ground, and a leaf that is as vibrant as a flickering flame. Douglas Florian is a poet for all seasons, but this book is the perfect poetry choice for fall.

A long-standing favorite children’s book author and illustrator, Lois Ehlert, has created a visual autumnal feast for children and adults with fantastic illustrations made almost entirely from leaves. The narrator reminds readers that “A Leaf Man’s got to go where the wind blows.” As the breeze carries the Leaf Man first eastward and then westward, beautiful fall landscapes come into full view a field of pumpkins, prairie meadows dotted with cows at harvest time, and a marsh filled with geese and ducks. This whimsical tale celebrates the beauty found in nature and the colors of the season. The creative use of bold backgrounds, varying textures, and a patchwork effect (a trademark of Ehlert) are the perfect accompaniments to the simple storyline of the Leaf Man’s journey.

Extension Activities: COLLAGE At the end of Leaf Man, readers are encouraged to listen for a “rustle in the leaves” and perhaps find a Leaf Man of their very own. Ehlert cleverly fashioned the Leaf Man from a single maple leaf and gathered brilliantly colored leaves from oaks, hawthorns, elms, beeches, and other trees to create a variety of objects and animals in the book.

In like fashion, on a crisp, fall day, put on a jacket and go outside with your family to gather as many interesting and brightly colored leaves as possible.

Make leaf-shaped animals and objects you are only limited by your imagination! Use crayon, chalk, paint, construction paper cutouts, or any other medium you like to create a background, and glue on your leafy creations. To preserve your work of art, cover it with clear contact paper.

Cinnamon-Sugar Toasted Pumpkin Seeds INGREDIENTS 2 c. fresh pumpkin seeds 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter

2 Tbsp. sugar tsp. kosher salt tsp. ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS Heat oven to degrees F. Spread the seeds on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until totally dry throughout, 5 to minutes.

Transfer the seeds to a large bowl (reserve the baking sheet). Increase oven temperature to 5 degrees F. Drizzle the butter over the pumpkin seeds, sprinkle with the sugar, salt, and cinnamon, and toss to coat. Spread the seeds in an even layer on the reserved sheet, and bake, tossing occasionally, until golden brown, 1 to 15 minutes.

October 11: International Day of the Girl

In 2 12, only five years ago, the United Nations named October 11th the International Day of the Girl (IDG), as a day of awareness to bring the issues girls face around the world to center stage. Topics such as education equality, child marriage, and sexual violence were among the key discussions held to initiate progress for the 1.1 billion girls around the world. The focus of this movement is to learn beyond the issues by collecting data to analyze and provide real solutions. Girls, therefore, now have the opportunity to speak out on the problems critical to them. The International Day of the Girl also promotes and celebrates the power, strength, and voice of girls around the world, emphasizing the credo, “No girl is alone!”

If we ask the question, “Who are your girl heroes?” Or, “Who stands to voice your concerns, empowering and freeing you?” Even if the statistic that “ of the world’s illiterate youth are female” can be documented, two young activists are already standing forward to spread the word regarding education for girls.

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate. By the age of 11, she gave a public speech entitled “How dare the Taliban take away my basic right to education?” Afterward, she began blogging for the BBC about her life in Pakistan and the need for educating girls. She survived a gunshot to the head, and continued to speak for girls’ rights. Yousafzai says, “I raise up my voice, not so that I can shout, but that those without a voice can be heard.” Yousafzai stands in the belief that “One child, one teacher, one pen, one book, can change the world.”

Emma Watson, British actor, known for her role in the Harry Potter films, has helped lead the conversation

for gender equality and girls’ education. For Watson’s advocacy, she was named “The United Nations’ Women’s Goodwill Ambassador,” and served as an ambassador for Camfed International, a movement to educate girls in rural Africa. Watson says, “Becoming yourself is really hard and confusing. I don’t want other people to decide who I am. I want to decide that for myself.” She recalls, “When I was eight, I was called bossy because I wanted to direct a play we would put on for our parents. At 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. At 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of sports teams because they didn’t want to appear masculine.” As a result, Watson created the “HeForShe” campaign. She believes one sex cannot win the fight for equality, men must stand forward to empower their daughters, sisters, mothers, and sons to be free from gender stereotypes.

On Wednesday, October 11th, the annual “Girls Speak Out” event will occur in New York City. The question needs to be answered Is this one day to celebrate the day of a girl or can it be the beginning of a hopeful movement to listen and solve problems, while empowering girls to progress forward? What can you do in your organization or school to foster this important conversation of allowing girls to speak? oices are needed through art, story, composition, poem, video and song. The message becomes stronger when girls raise their voices together. One empowering statement at this moment is providing girls the ability to step into the shoes of their heroes, such as Malala Yousafzai and Emma Watson, and equip them with power to speak from the heart and change the world.

It doesn’t necessarily take a summit to allow girls the platform to speak. It can happen through one person standing forward; perhaps the next “girl” hero is you!

9 Tips to Minimize Grocery Shopping

July of 2017, the USDA released a document that claimed households should spend between $75 to $125 per person, per month, on groceries. In a household of four individuals, the total would average $500 monthly. Many of us are thus challenged by the question, “How can we reduce grocery costs while still eating healthy and quality foods?” The solution may not be easy or convenient. It begins with families thinking outside the box and meticulous pre-planning.

1. Implementing change in our budgeting practices requires baby steps and time for analysis. The first step is to consider a budget, and a method to keep track of your weekly spending and overall budget. A credit card may be one solution. (Some cards will offer a cash-back reward, which will come in handy.)

2. Shopping in bulk is a smart investment. You may think, “What am I going to do with 25 pounds of flour or jasmine rice; yet, storing frequently used items will save money in the long run. (Consider vacuum-sealing rice, noodles, and ready-made packaged soups in glass jars and investing in large sealable containers.) Take advantage of great sales on frozen vegetables and meats, too. A chest freezer is a great investment.

3. How often have you said, “Oh, I wish I’d known I had spaghetti sauce already!” Organizing your pantries and cupboards, especially the corner cabinet, can be time-consuming; however, the result is helpful. Take a moment to group items together, and place them in rows with the expiration dates in mind. Keeping track of what you have is a blessing and can save you money.

4. Deals are everywhere, and most often, follow a daily pattern.

By venturing into various grocery stores, you can learn about weekly sales. Take a pad and paper. You will want to take notes and to discover which stores offer the best prices.

5. Too often, we find ourselves taking advantage of convenience and stopping to buy snacks, drinks, or meals for breakfast and lunch, or picking up a few grocery items mid-week, which adds up to a substantial total. The solution is to create a weekly menu of meals. Making meals and freezing will save you time and effort during the week, and provide a variety of meals for the whole family.

6. Many of our favorite grocery stores offer customers the service of shopping online and picking up items at the curb.

Saving time and money are two influential benefits, as long as shopping is completed once a week.

7. Pancake mix contains eight ingredients most households have at home. Why spend the money for a pre-made bag when you can make the recipe from scratch? As a culture, we are sacrificing healthy foods to convenience. The solution is to become self-sufficient.

Without a bread maker, you can creatively make your own loaves if you keep the dough well protected in the refrigerator.

A fresh, preservative-free loaf will last two to three days, and, comprising only three ingredients, will be a much healthier option for the entire family. Yes, start thinking outside the box.

8. With produce and herb prices on the rise, it is wise to take ownership of growing your own organic food favorites.

Whether the plants are placed on the window sill or back porch, you can take advantage of the natural light to encourage growth. In our location, zone 7 offers a longer season of warmth; therefore, research what you can grow each month of the year. Wouldn’t it be nice to save money on lettuce, carrots, onions, and bell peppers, for instance?

In knowing where your food comes from, the answer is always, yes!

9. Eating a good breakfast will always provide the extra energy and nutritional value your family needs. Discuss ways for the household to begin each day sitting at the kitchen table, and holding lunches as they leave for work or school. Everyone can participate in the conversation of saving money and lending a hand. Today’s conversations encourage tomorrow’s savings and health. The topic of rising early can be saved for another day!

Why We Anticipate the Season of

The word “Halloween” conjures up images of masks and costumes, candy and baskets, a cool night walking in darkness, parties with good friends and eerie decorations. An estimated 157 million Americans participate in the season, which balances our desire to have a heart-pounding, thrilling experience while laughing and enjoying the moment with family or good friends.

In spending an average of seven billion dollars for the holiday, Americans on October 31st celebrate fear, personal decisions, creativity and togetherness.

Decisions, Decisions!

Halloween creates the moment to decide who you will become.

Will the costume foster strength and empowerment, goodwill and intelligence, or darkness and silence? There are unlimited choices in that one decision. And, considering all the great possibilities, from superhero to zombie, it takes time and thoughtful planning. Whether you make your own costume months in advance or purchase one, creativity is involved in that one choice. Children, especially, can openly say the words, “I am a stealthy ninja!” or “I am a brave astronaut, or “I am a mythological person and can leap into the air.” We need the decision, the imagination, and the thought process to transform us and become someone or something great!

Artistic Expression and Creativity

The spirit of Halloween begins subtlety with the appearance of thick cobwebs strewn on the front porch, a yard, across the street, and with corn stalks tied to the light post and a few bottle-gourd ghosts. The spirit is caught, and soon other homes will begin hanging their witch’s hat luminaries or batthemed vine wreaths or adding pumpkins to window boxes.

Every year, families come together to create new decorations made from cardboard and paint, or perhaps designed with craft supplies. When our day-to-day life is consumed with schedules and preparations, meetings or tests, Halloween allows us to feel connected with neighbors or neighborhoods, with familiar faces and new friends. It

is a thrill to participate, whether we are awaiting children or accompanying others. A sign to welcome those in costume is present in the porch light. It is then the time to create decorations to enhance the moment for children, young and old. It can be a brave walk to receive the gift of a few treats and welcome smiles!

The Fear Factor

We all have fears! The list includes spiders, being alone, darkness, clowns, and quintessentially, a fear of being scared.

How often do we tempt our fears and watch suspenseful or thrilling movies? It’s a powerful force that can alter decisions, instill panic, or encourage steps forward. Halloween allows us to approach our fears, whether we are venturing houseto-house and calling out “trick or treat,” or visiting a haunted house or corn maze. Each year, we are given a chance to leave the safety of our homes and participate in the thrill of fright while standing with good friends. If you find yourself running, try to stop and turn around. What a moment to realize cardboard and paint, makeup and costumes are part of the fun of All Hallows Eve!

A Change of Colors

Beyond the children’s overflowing buckets of hard candies and chocolate bars, the costume remains on the morning of November first. It may be placed among other costumes and worn by children and neighbors throughout the year to continue the tradition of becoming someone in spirit and play.

HAPPY PARENTS, HAPPY CHILDREN While visiting some friends at their home once, I was introduced to a young couple expecting their first child. Upon learning that I write a column about parenting in a magazine, they immediately wanted my input on a very interesting question I’d never been asked before. They asked me what one piece of advice I could offer that I think would lead to a happy child. When I looked into the eyes of this couple, I could see a familiar expression of fear and concern behind the surface, indicating that they were wondering if they had what it takes to do this. It was obvious they needed some encouragement as they took this next step in their relationship and lives together.

After pausing and thinking for a brief moment, I made a disclaimer that there are obviously a variety of factors which can impact a child’s overall happiness, and it wasn’t always related to the parents’ actions.

However, knowing they were nervous and very interested in getting any advice they could, I indulged them with something I knew was very important.

Think of it this way: for the child, his or her parents are the nucleus of the home around which everything else is formed.

A stable, strong, supportive and calm nucleus is a solid foundation for children to grow healthy and to mature with the characteristics they’ll need to face life’s challenges head-on.

It’s also true that maintaining this type of relationship over the years helps the parents, as well, cope with the many challenges of parenting their children. They achieve their own level of security and support, knowing they’re both in this together, which is important. By no means does this imply that parents never argue or disagree with one another from time to time; it’s perfectly normal, within reason. Although they may not have always agreed on the same things, we children knew that my parents still had great affection for each other.

Watching them allowed me and my three siblings to grow up appreciating the importance of remembering to be romantic and caring, and of making an effort to do the little things that make an ordinary day extraordinary. I don’t pretend to be as good as they were, but I continue to try.

I looked at them with a reassuring smile and advised the one thing I knew for sure—if you want a happy child, you need to have a happy relationship with your partner. This may sound overly simple, but it’s true. Children are incredibly observant and not just when they’re little.

Psychologists advise that children develop their sense of security at home. Part of this development stems from what they see and feel from their parents. Therefore, if they witness two people who really care for one another and go out of their way for each other, they learn some valuable lessons from it.

They learn to live their life not just for themselves. They also learn the satisfaction you get from helping others, and the importance of empathy, compassion, and caring for others, all traits that will benefit them greatly in the future.

Also, related to security, the children feel a closer connection with two parents who show a genuine love and affection towards one another. As they witness this behavior being

After all, at this special time in their lives, they assumed it would be all about the baby. I think it made them feel a sense of comfort, knowing it wasn’t selfish on their part also to continue to give attention to each other. As a matter of fact, it’s necessary for parents to maintain mental and physical health through the years. Children, after all, can be trying for all of us at times.

So, if you’re a new parent, try this advice, and if you’re an older parent who’s forgotten, may this be a reminder to rekindle the flame in your relationship. After all, everyone benefits!

DIY Halloween Costumes

BY MEGAN TAYLOR Every year on October 31st, people celebrate a day and night of trick-or-treating, eating candy, and wearing fun or scary costumes. This day, commonly known as Halloween, dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who lived in current-day Ireland 2,000 years ago, celebrated their new year on November 1st. On the night of October 31st, they celebrated Samhain, a night when they believed the ghosts returned to earth and marked the end of summer.

During these festivals, sacred bonfires were held by priests, and people would burn crops and sacrifice animals to the Celtic deities. Typically, the Celts wore costumes of animal heads and skins and tried to tell each other’s fortunes. The wearing of the costume during these festivals began the now common Halloween tradition.

Weeks before the big day, people will spend time and money finding the perfect Halloween costume. However, sometimes the price of your outfit can get expensive, when all the pieces and parts start adding up. Never fear, there are ways to create your wanted look without breaking the bank.

DIY Halloween costumes can be inexpensively made using common household and craft items. Think about materials that you already have, such as boxes, fabrics, buttons, pipe cleaners, cardstock, and clothing. Only buy the missing items at discount or craft stores. Need some ideas for DIY Halloween costumes? Take a look below for some creative and fun outfits.

ROSIE THE RIVETER: Only a few items are needed to form this iconic look. All this costume requires are jeans, a denim shirt, and a red and white polka dot bandana.

BUMBLE BEE: This costume is great for adults and kids. Wear a black T-shirt and black leggings. Use elastic and yellow and black tulle for a skirt over the leggings. Tie the tulle, alternating the colors, to the elastic. Lastly, purchase a bee headband from Amazon or create one yourself. Take a plain headband, black or yellow, and four pipe cleaners, two black and two yellow. Twist a black and yellow pipe cleaner together

and then twist to the headband on one side. Do the same with the remaining materials. Glue a yellow pom-pom to each set of pipe cleaners at the top.

LION: You’ll be the king or queen of the jungle with this animal look. Begin with a yellow shirt, yarn, and brown eyeliner. Using the yarn, make the lion’s mane. First, wrap yarn around three of your fingers, circling as you go. Then, tie a piece of yarn through the hole around the rounds of yarn to secure. On the opposite side from where you just tied, cut across and fluff. This should make smaller threads, and a pom-pom look.

Repeat until you have plenty of yarn pom-poms. This will serve as the main part of the mane. Braid six strings of yarn together to create a headband. Be sure it is long enough to tie around your head and tie off at each end. Start from the middle of the cord and attach the pom-poms by tying them to the braided headband. Add a nose and whiskers with the eyeliner, and you’re done.

1980S OUTFIT: The 1980s were a decade known for their fashion—good and bad. Grab some leg warmers, brightcolored accessories, blocky shapes on clothing, velvet, lace, and some teased big hair, and you’ll be able to create a Halloween costume straight from the ‘80s.

BUBBLE BATH: This outfit is so simple, you can make it on October 31st. Wear a white shirt and pants or leggings underneath balloons. Blow up clear, white, and pink balloons and safety pin the end of the balloon that’s been tied all over your clothing. Then, safety pin balloons to a white headband for your headpiece. Lastly, glue a rubber duck to one of the balloons for an added effect. You can also include sponges, loofahs, and other bubble bath accessories to your outfit.

Halloween costumes don’t need to be expensive. Start with your outfit and make a list of the materials you’ll need. Think about what you have and what you need to buy. Need some more ideas? A quick Google or Pinterest search will open up a door of Halloween costume possibilities.

Not all age-related eye problems are serious enough to threaten your vision, but they can be uncomfortable and need to be addressed. Since 1999, Duke Eye Center of Winston-Salem has been providing state-of-the-art eye care with knowledgeable and experienced physicians.

I joined Duke Eye Center in 1999 as the cataract/glaucoma specialist, and as the practice has grown, we have added specialists in the cornea, oculoplastics, glaucoma and, coming this November, pediatrics. Pink Heals

July 24th, through the combined efforts of Lana Schlotfeldt of Village Inn Event Center and the Forsyth Magazines team, dozens joined Triad Pink Heals to surprise Forsyth Family publisher, Robin Bralley, with a visit from a pink fire truck! During her visit, our team learned a bit about Triad Pink Heals. With our sister-publication planning a fundraiser for the organization on October 10th, we were eager to learn more and share with our readers a bit of the history behind this amazing organization.

The History of Pink Heals Pink Heals was founded by Dave Graybill in 2007. A man of much energy and enthusiasm, as well as a retired fire fighter, he began repurposing fire trucks to create an organization that would utilize the volunteerism of public safety officers to encourage those who are in need. While the pink truck is often associated with breast cancer, Pink Heals is an organization designed to offer support to anyone who is facing an illness.

With almost 50 independently run chapters of Pink Heals across the country, Pink Heals is a non-profit organization run exclusively on donations and volunteers.

The Triad Pink Heals Chapter The Triad Pink Heals chapter was founded in 2 12 by fire fighter Charles Goins. After learning about Pink Heals, and enjoying his own stint at volunteering on a national tour to bring awareness, Charles was ready to come home and begin a chapter in Winston-Salem.

The first pink fire truck in Winston-Salem was named Sofie, after an eight-year-old who battled cancer most of her life. The first pink police car was named for Whitney, a breast-cancer survivor.

Sadly, the namesake for the first pink fire truck passed away in May this year. Sofie’s legacy continues through Pink Heals though, and Whitney now serves as the chapter president.

How to Get Involved Triad Pink Heals is 100% volunteer-based. Volunteering requires a minimum participation of four events per year, but volunteers are encouraged to participate in as many events as possible.

My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course. ~Proverbs 23:19 I bet you’ve noticed that there are lots of roads and pathways in our world: super highways, country lanes; bike paths, walking paths; sea routes for ships, air routes for planes. Paths are for our safety, and they show us that someone has gone this way before.

If you’ve ever gone hiking with someone, you know how easy it is to get sidetracked by something off the path. You see a pretty flower just over there, beside that rock, and you want to see it up close. A squirrel leaps from tree to tree and you want to follow it.

Can you think of a time when you made a bad choice? Maybe a friend asked you to do something that your mom and dad told you not to do. Did you ever watch something on TV or online that you knew wasn’t a good thing for you to see? Have you said things that weren’t true or that hurt someone’s feelings? When you make a bad choice, you’ve started down a wrong path. You’ve gotten “off track.”

You might not know it, but your parents and teachers are trying to help you choose the right way to go. When you do something wrong, your parents might put you in “time out” or paddle your butt or take away your favorite electronic game. Your teacher might give you extra homework or send you to see the principal. They’re not doing this to be mean, but to help you learn to make good decisions on your own. They know that when you walk on a bad path, it starts to look and feel like the only path there is.

The verse above says you need to keep your heart on the right course or the right path. How can you do that? Your parents, teachers, and other adults will help. You can go to church (without complaining) and ask to go to Sunday School (and really listen). Read your Bible or have someone read it and other Bible stories to you.

Pray! Ask God to keep you on track. “Lead me by your truth, God, and teach me, for you are the God who saves me” (Psalm 25:5). “If you follow Jesus, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life” (John 8:12). It’s not always easy to stay on the right path, but it’s always worth it.

“You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” ~ John 15:3-4 I gotta admit…I love cleaning gadgets. I am so easily lured by the promise of an easier, quicker and elbow-grease-free way to get things done that I’ll open my wallet for just about anything making that promise. But, I’ve found that there is one major setback with every new-fangled cleanser, gadget, and appliance on the market…you actually have to USE them in order for them to work! Believe it or not, that Swiffer Sweeper, Greased Lightning and 5 cyclonic vacuum do a horrible job of house cleaning when they are sitting in the closet. Don’t believe me? Just come over to my house some time, and you’ll see what I mean.

It’s the same thing with our spiritual houses. God has provided us with countless tools to help us grow in our faith. But, if we don’t use them, they don’t work! I have at least ten different Bibles in my collection: the NIV, The Living Bible, The Message, study Bibles, life-application Bibles and devotional Bibles.

But, it wouldn’t matter if I had ten thousand Bibles and never read any of them. He has surrounded me with supportive Christian friends and mentors.

My bookshelves at work and at home are full of books about Christian living and spirituality. My CD shelves are filled with Christian music. There are at least a dozen churches within a 10-minute drive of my home. God even offers open communication with him through prayer, anytime I want it.

Yes, He has indeed provided the resources, but it is my job to put all these things to work in my life.

Here’s the really good news, though. Putting our faith-building tools to work is usually much more pleasant than housework, and the rewards are much more long-lasting than a clean kitchen floor.

It Matters You’ve probably noticed that what your minister does or says in church affects how you feel for the rest of the day. But, have you ever wondered how your ministry team is affected by what YOU do each Sunday? Here’s what one worship leader recently shared: “I am a sponge; God created me this way.

Every comment, every inflection in someone’s voice, every eye-roll, every time you don’t participate...or look sad, or angry. Every time a person acts differently than what I know to be their “normal” way, it affects me deeply. I will let those things or attitudes churn around in me, worry about them, pray for them, mourn for them. Whether or not my congregation met God that Sunday, matters so much to me, and whether or not I was a conduit or a hindrance to that, matters so much more.”

Our ministry leaders need our encouragement. It’s more than just a nice thing to do. It matters. It’s biblical, even.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 – “Therefore encourage one

another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Proverbs 16:24 – “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”

1 Peter 4:8-9 – “Above all, love each other deeply

because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

Clearly, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are called to encourage and edify one another... including our pastors and ministry leaders. It’s not complicated. A smile, a note, a word of appreciation are just a few simple ways you can brighten your pastor’s day.

My Grace-Full Life

Verse Mapping

month, I wrote about “ nowing God,” and specifically how He’s not as elusive as some make Him out to be. The best way to know Him, without question, is through Scripture. “Verse Mapping” is a fantastic way to make Scripture come to life and help you gain a better understanding of God’s word, as well as make it personally applicable.

Verse Mapping starts with a verse. We’re going to use my blog’s signature verses for this exercise: Ephesians 2:8-9. Write it out on a piece of paper, then personalize your verse. Wherever Scripture refers to “you,” “your,” “we,” “him,” “her,” change it to your name. Then, go through the verse and highlight what is especially meaningful for you—words or phrases that pop out and seem to carry great value in the overall message.

Verse Mapping doesn’t begin and end with these verses. You have to go back to the chapter from which the verse came and read the verses around it. Understand the context in which it’s written. Who was talking? Who were they talking to? What was the context of the conversation? Is there a cultural reference you need to understand better to truly embrace the verse itself?

In this case, Ephesians 2 is part of a letter the Apostle Paul wrote to the people of Ephesus. It’s important to note that Paul was a Jew and the people of Ephesus (Turkey) were Gentiles. In those days, what Paul was doing was revolutionary. Jews didn’t socialize with Gentiles. But Paul embraced the mission esus gave him and in his words, became a part of them. We know from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians in chapter 9, verses 20-22, that he made it a point in his mission work to become like those he ministered to. That’s not to say he compromised his beliefs, but it means that he was probably the first person to embrace the “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” school of thought.

He made himself relatable to those whom he served, and in that day and time, such an act was unheard-of.

But getting back to Ephesians 2, when we read it, we understand the chapter is a celebration of Jesus’ gift of salvation. Paul begins by describing how we were dead in Christ. In this case, “dead in Christ” means “separated from Christ.” Our sinful nature and love for our flesh and worldly pleasures had created a chasm between God and us. But even though we were sinners, Jesus loved us enough to die for us anyway. He didn’t expect us to “fix” ourselves. He knew we couldn’t, because “The wages of sin is death,” (Romans 6:23). Jesus paid our sin debt before we even began to understand the need to say, “I’m sorry,” and “Thank you.”

And as a Jewish man, Paul was compassionate to his Gentile brothers- and sisters-in-Christ and identified with them, sharing that no one, regardless of nationality, gender, socio-economic status, can “earn” a place in heaven. It’s a gift, directly from the hands of God. And we accept that gift of mercy and grace through the acceptance of Jesus Christ. God does not allow us to “earn” our place in heaven, because He wants us to be dependent on His son. We can never brag about being good enough, because none of us are (or ever will be) good enough.

When you have an understanding of the context of the verses, then it’s helpful to read a few other translations. I have started this verse-mapping exercise in the English Standard Version (ESV), but frequently refer to the New Living Translation (NLT), and the King James Version (KJV), as well.

The next step in Verse Mapping is to cross-reference Scripture.

I use several tools, including Logos Bible Software, but I also like BibleGateway.com. I just recently starting using Logos and it’s quickly becoming my personal favorite, because of the extensive library of commentaries and concordances, as well as multiple translations of Scripture.

For our verses, I found cross-references to 1 Peter 1:5; Romans 4:16a; 2 Corinthians 3:5; and Judges 7:2. Ephesians 2:8-9 can be further cross-referenced, but I chose to limit it to these four.

I also defined some of the key words I’d highlighted earlier.

The Logos Bible Software I referenced earlier will allow you to go deeper into individual word studies, even going to original Greek and Hebrew words and meanings.

And that, my friends, is how Verse Mapping works. I hope you’ll try this for yourself and discover the way God can use the Bible in such a powerful, personal way.

I knew the importance of reading and studying Scripture to cultivate my relationship with God, but I was terrible at the disciplined practice. Truthfully, I didn’t really know how to study the Bible. With a heartfelt desire to deepen my faith, I would read it like every other book; starting at the beginning, the first pages and working my way to the end.

didn’t even realize the lyrics were Scripture until they were spoken at a funeral I attended in high school. At the time, I was terribly confused (and, truthfully, amused) as to why the pastor was quoting the Byrds during a time of worship. “Who sings rock at a funeral?” I thought. However, the closer I listened, the more the message seemed fitting, and even comforting.

This method worked…for about two weeks at a time, if that long. I would start in Genesis and read my way through Exodus, but as soon as I got to Leviticus, I lost all interest: I loved all the stories and history of the first two books, but Leviticus is a book filled mainly with laws, rules, and regulations. It is an ongoing list of ritual best-practices for worship pre-Christ. I could never quite get through it. Despite my attempts to read the Bible, I never finished that third book. Needless to say, as much as I wanted to read and study Scripture as a child, I never made it to the “end” of the story.

Surrounded by grieving family and friends, I heard: there is a season for everything in life; God has created all things in time with a place and purpose; life is not meaningless; with each and every changing season of life there is a new opportunity to stand in awe of God.

I first learned the passage above, perhaps like many of you, from the musical genius of the Byrds. They were an American Folk Rock band from Los Angeles, popular in the ‘60s. In 1965, they released the song “Turn, turn, turn,” where they sang the beautiful words of Ecclesiastes. In fact, I

What happens at the OCC Processing Center?

National Collection Week for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child (OCC) is November 13th–20th. Many local churches will have collection events during that week. In addition, most local Chick-Fil-A sites are designated as drop-off collection points. Hobby Lobby stores stock plastic OCC-approved shoebox containers if needed; don’t let the lack of a shoebox hinder your participation.

Diane and Bobby Pledger have worked with the ministry for 20-plus years. They were chosen to participate with OCC teams in May to deliver OCC shoeboxes to children in Togo, Africa.

“We were given the opportunity to help distribute shoeboxes this year,” Diane shared. “It’s a remarkable experience to see the full-circle process in action.”

So, what does happen to all those wrapped shoeboxes filled with gifts for children around the world? Let Diane and Bobby share their experience…

First, Bobby filled in some background information on the logistical steps necessary to make these deliveries happen. As you can imagine, a great deal of planning and preparation is required to distribute these boxes all over the world.

There are about 9,000 year-round OCC volunteers in the United States.

Ten other countries participate in OCC. In 2016, over 10 million shoeboxes were donated from the US. Of those, 10,800 were delivered to Togo in May 2017 to be included with shipments that had already arrived.

There are eight processing centers in the US. Local donations go to the Charlotte OCC Processing Center.

Shoeboxes are shipped via air or sea and final transport may be by canoe, camel, or bike. As Bobby stated, “OCC uses any means necessary to deliver the shoeboxes to their destination.”

Pastors and leaders in-country are responsible for final delivery of the shoeboxes and keep detailed records on who receives them.

OCC follows the 1, 1, 1 principle (i.e., one child gets one shoebox once in their life); hence the need for detailed records.

First, each shoebox is checked to verify that the contents meet the shoebox gift guidelines (visit samaritanspurse.org for details) and any inappropriate items are removed; this step helps minimize delays getting the shoeboxes through customs.

Additional items may be added to ensure that all shoeboxes are full. The shipping cost donation is collected (it costs $9 to cover shipping and project costs per shoebox).

Who Gets an OCC Shoebox?

Diane explained that children from ages 2 to 14 are eligible; ages are segmented by gender into three categories (2 to 4, 5 to 9, and 10 to 14). “Stuffed animals are a favorite gift, something to hold for comfort,” Diane said. “Mini-footballs or soccer balls deflated with a small pump are popular. These are known as ‘Wow’ gifts. School supplies are also welcome, especially in areas where children cannot go to school unless they have their own supplies.” Diane emphasized that “These children may only get one present in their entire lifetime. Making it memorable is an important consideration.”

Delivery Day! Diane and Bobby shared that they were part of a 32-person team comprised of Samaritan’s Purse staff and volunteers. Once in Toga, they separated into three teams, each making about five deliveries. Local pastors follow the Partner Ministry Guide to ensure each delivery event is consistent. “At one church, the children receiving shoeboxes were grouped together, but there were other children on the fringes. We learned that they had gotten shoeboxes the previous year and were there to enjoy and support the ones getting them this year.”

Diane shared, “Each child is given a gospel message booklet in their own language with their shoebox. They are invited to participate in a 12-week discipleship program, The Greatest Journey, led by teachers trained by the National Leadership team in each country (who are also responsible for coordinating the shoebox distribution). Once they finish the 12-week class, they have a graduation ceremony and receive a robe and their own Bible. There is a celebration party for the children who graduate.”

Bobby and Diane’s experience in Togo was a once-in-a-lifetime event, and their volunteer efforts continue. It’s a good bet you’ll find one or two showing up at the eighth- annual Friends of the Ronald McDonald House Character Breakfast on Saturday, October 21st, at Bridger Field House (499 Deacon Blvd.). This year’s breakfast is presented

by Allegacy, Rockwell Collins, and Wake Forest Baptist Health Brenner Children’s Hospital, along with a vast team of dedicated support sponsors, volunteers, and the staff of the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem.

Join the fun on October 21st TWO SEATINGS:

Hawthorne Road and provides 35 bedrooms with private baths, two laundry rooms, kitchen with food and meals via community donations, a playroom, and game rooms; all in a secure and fully staffed environment 24/7. The House is within sight of Brenner Children’s Hospital and only two miles from Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. They also have Ronald McDonald Family Rooms within each hospital (on the th floor Ardmore Tower at Brenner Children’s Hospital and on the rd floor of the neonatal intensive care unit at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center).

Planning for Permanent Teeth When Baby Teeth Are Lost Too Soon A child's set of “baby” teeth typically stays in place until permanent teeth are starting to erupt - but this isn't always the case. Whether from an accident, dental disease or other reason, sometimes baby teeth are lost too early and can have a long-term impact on the health and development of a child's oral health.

Baby teeth serve as "space holders" for the permanent teeth and encourage normal development of permanent teeth, bones and muscles. When a tooth is lost too soon, it has an effect on the teeth around it, potentially causing a shift in position or alignment and affecting the permanent teeth yet to come. Left untreated, permanent teeth may erupt in a crooked or crowded manner or simply have no place to go.

Pediatric dentists are a first line of defense for proper tooth alignment.

Sometimes we use space maintainers to keep remaining teeth from moving to allow for the natural development of permanent teeth. The devices are typically small and unobtrusive, which allows a child to easily adapt to the appliance and are easily changeable and removable as tooth development continues.

Blessing of the Animals at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church

Saturday, October 7th, St. Clement’s Episcopal Church

will open its doors for the annual Blessing of the Animals. This is a wonderful opportunity to shower your beloved pet of any shape and size with the blessings that come from this service.

“As an Episcopal priest, I have been a part of a Blessing of the Animals service every year since I was ordained more than 20 years ago,” said The Rev. Jamie L’Enfant Edwards. “Blessing animals is one of my most favorite priestly duties, and I believe the Blessing of the Animals service is vitally important for three reasons: 1) Our pets are beloved members of our families. And, for some, they offer love, comfort and companionship missing in human relationships. This service gives people an opportunity to honor and celebrate the nonhuman members of their families.

2) The Blessing of the Animals is done on or near October 4th, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. St. Francis considered all creatures to be his brothers and sisters. Celebrating the feast of St. Francis reminds us of our responsibility to be good stewards of God’s creation.

3) Our Blessing of the Animals service draws folks from the community who don’t normally attend our services. I believe this service is an occasion for people of different faiths—or perhaps no faith—to gather through their shared commitment to their own pets to ask every blessing upon them and, by extension, the whole created order. The love we share with animals is common ground that can help heal divisions and change the world.”

Whether you are a member of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church or not, whether you are Episcopalian or not, or whether you attend church at all or not, you are welcome at the Blessing of the Animals service. “The service is simple,” said Liz Gober. “There are no expectations. All are welcome. Each person who comes has the love of his or her pets in common with all who participate. We hope the service strengthens the bond between pet and human partner. We hope people maybe will make a new friend who shares a love of a pet. Sometimes people learn of a new resource for help caring for their pet.”

St. Clement’s asks that all pets be restrained by leashes or in crates, and kids be kept under control, due to the business of Harper Road. The service will take place in the parking lot of the church, weather permitting.

If it rains, the service will be held in the church basement. Horses are also welcome and will be blessed at the church’s portico.

“The service offers prayers of thanksgiving for creation and the love and companionship of our pets, and then, each pet receives a blessing individually,” said Reverend Edwards. “We also try to have rabies vaccinations and the Humane Society of Davie County with pets to adopt.”

The Blessing of the Animals takes place on Saturday, October 7th from 12:30–1:30 pm at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, located at 3600 Harper Road in Clemmons. For more information, call the church office at 336.766.4323.

It’s a GRAND Life What A Gift

I am blessed with so many – family, faith, friends to name a few. This article, however, pertains to the material kind. With three daughters, three sons-in-law, six grandchildren as of now, a husband, and other family and friends, it seems that I am always searching for a gift.

I usually have suggestions from my daughters for something they would like and help with my sons-in-law, but as the grands get older and their interests change, gifts for them are getting harder.

When our first grandchild was born, it was easy to find a gift – after all, she didn’t have siblings that already had been given something that she could play with, wear or use. When her brother came along, the same held true – he certainly wasn’t going to wear any of her outfits, and he definitely preferred cars and trucks to baby dolls. It became harder when their younger brother made his appearance. Toys began to take over. Their mom and dad put a limit of one each on Christmas presents from the grandparents, but, in a way, that made it more difficult. Why? Because I am one of those crazy even-Steven people, and finding three gifts in the same price-point isn’t always easy.

Now, when it comes to birthdays, it isn’t a gift limit issue, it is finding something they don’t already have. This is especially difficult with my grands. I am competing for suggestions with their aunts, other grandparents, Godparents and close friends. I also hear from their moms not to go overboard as they already have too much as it is. Looking around their rooms and playrooms, I really have to agree with them. As they age, so will the price of their desired presents. When multiplied by the number of grandchildren, the evenSteven issue will add up to quite a healthy sum. So, what’s the solution?

After giving this a lot of thought, I have a couple of answers that may work for all concerned. When it comes to a gift, I have a set amount to spend. If there is a toy they have their hearts set on that falls within that range, then, by all means,

they will have it. If this is something their parents planned to give them, I won’t steal their thunder. If there isn’t a second much-wanted present in that same range, then I will move to plan two. I will give them something that costs less that they still want and make up the difference with a check to cover some or all of the cost of an activity or class such as swim lessons, dance, music, art, sports, camp, etc. For the younger grands, if there isn’t an activity, then a check for their savings account. This can also be for the older ones, too. However, when they get to an age their parents feel is appropriate, the cash or check goes directly to them.

As a teenager, I loved getting money from my grandparents.

It taught me to be responsible for saving for something important instead of wasting it on a passing fad. My mom came to realize this with her granddaughters. She got as much pleasure seeing what they would use it for as they did in deciding what to do. In the long run, our grands will always have everything they need and most of what they want. The opportunity to contribute to a learning experience, a fun activity or a savings account for future use is something that will stay with them longer than the discarded toy.

Another option is to couple the material item with the gift of you. As my daughters point out, the grands don’t know, at least at their current ages, what something costs, only that they want it. They do remember our being there for, and with, them. I find out more about what’s going on in their lives, what they are into at the moment and their likes and dislikes during these times. Whether it is taking them for a special treat, making cookies, doing a craft or playing a game, the being together and listening to them are special memories for both and the best gift of all.

Things I should not be allowed to do: • Watch dog food commercials • Listen to Sarah McLachlan songs • Attend school functions Because all of these things make me a teary-eyed, red-faced, simpering baby.

Twice in the past few weeks, I have been to my children’s schools and been reduced to tears. The first time, during the PTO meeting, as they gave character awards to students in each grade level. I listened, I applauded, I cried and cried. I knew none of the children.

This other morning, there was a Mom and Me breakfast. It was lovely and touching and emotional, and I was not the only weepy mother in the crowd. However, I was likely the only one whose poor kid kept leaning over and saying stuff like, “Jeez, are you crying again? Are you going to be okay?”

During the last few minutes of the program, we were asked to turn to our child and say what it is about them that we love.

They, in turn, would say what they loved about us as moms.

Katie turned to me and said, “We don’t have to do this. We can talk about something else.”

I admire her restraint.

I feel much the same way. I am loathe to cry. I am not overly sentimental. I am not big on outpourings of love and grand declarations and romance. I’m more comfortable with a not too long hug (five seconds max, followed by the double pat to let you know it’s over). Maybe a high five. Maybe a “Love you, mean it,” because the “mean it” part makes it sound like maybe I love you, but not very seriously.

When my father was in the last weeks of his life, my mother encouraged us to have “the talk.” You know the one, where you tell your dying loved one how much they mean to you, and patch up any disagreements, and forgive any sins. I sat down next to my dad and said, “Can we not have this talk, and tell mom we did?” He laughed and said, “I love you.”

“I love you, too, Daddy,” I said.

That was enough.

But the older I get, the more I feel like emotion is manipulating my heart, making me feel soft and vulnerable and prone to saying things I would normally only say after many beers. I am crying all the time. Happy tears and sad tears and tears over my kids growing up and how many people I love and how I still feel so alone sometimes and the dog food commercials.

It is almost too much to bear, for a formerly tear-free person.

The more I fight it, the worse it becomes, until I’m afraid even the sight of an animal or small child will make me break down.

“I don’t know what came over her. She was picking up dog poop and the next thing I knew she was crying.”

This morning, I hugged my daughter to my chest and whispered in her ear all the things I love about her. I cried big, fat tears, without apology.

And I kind of liked it.

INGREDIENTS: 2 lb. ground beef, lean 2 cans corn 1 tsp garlic, minced 1 onion 2 (15-oz.) cans black or pinto beans 1 (15-oz.) can pumpkin puree 2 14.5-o . cans tomatoes, fire-roasted 1 can beef broth 3 Tbsp. chili powder ½ tsp pepper ½ tsp salt TOPPINGS (optional): corn chips, sour cream, shredded cheese, green onions DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink. Drain off fat and place meat into a 5–6-quart crockpot.

2. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low heat for 4–6 hours.

3. Let the kids help top the individual bowls with your preference of sour cream, corn chips, shredded cheese and green onions. Serve in festive Halloween paper party cups if you like.

INGREDIENTS: ¾ cup butter, melted ¾ cup brown sugar, packed 2 Tbsp. vanilla extract 1 box Rice Chex cereal 4 cups pretzels 1 (7-oz.) bag Bugles 1 heaping cup candy corn 1 heaping cup candy corn pumpkins 1 heaping cup butterscotch chips 1 (8-oz.) bag Reese’s Pieces (or Halloweencolored M&Ms DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 275°F. 2. In a medium bowl, melt the butter in the microwave.

3. Whisk in the brown sugar and vanilla extract until dissolved.

4. In a VERY large bowl, add the cereal, pretzels and Bugles.

5. Pour the buttery sauce over the mixture and toss gently until evenly covered.

6. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

7. Divide and spread the mixture evenly onto the baking sheets.

8. Bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.

9. Remove from oven. Once cool, add candy corn, pumpkin candy corn, Reese’s pieces and butterscotch chips. Toss to combine.

10. Store in an airtight container.

Amy Linville Allstate Insurance Agency: Staying True to Her Hometown Roots

a young age, Amy Linville knew Kernersville would always be home for her. Linville majored in education during college; however, after teaching for a few years, she discovered that she wanted a career that hit home for her. She became a secondgeneration Allstate insurance agent and in 2011, took over the family business.

Now, Linville is combining lessons from her father, a love for helping others, and from the community in her all-womanrun Allstate agency in Kernersville. Her company provides clients with financial services, as well as car, homeowner’s, and life insurance. In addition, “toys” insurance for boats, motorcycles, etc., is available.

A Family Affair “I quit teaching in 1999 and started working for my dad, who was an Allstate agent. This was a transitional time for me; I was trying to find what I wanted to do.

I started out as a sales producer and in customer service. Quickly, I discovered working with Allstate was where I wanted to be. In 2006, I received my appointment as an insurance agent, and five years later, I took over when my dad retired,” remembered Linville.

According to Linville, her family jokes that her dad never really retired, because it seemed as if he didn’t do anything at work. However, she soon found out this wasn’t true and that there is more to running a small business than most people think. “I learned that my dad did so much behind the scenes. For a business owner, it can be overwhelming, yet very rewarding. There are long hours at the beginning, which include taking laptops home and working all hours,” stated Linville.

With a background in education, Linville wanted to transfer this passion into helping her clients understand their insurance needs. “I love meeting with clients and assisting them with their package deals. Also, I enjoy informing

them about the insurance products and risks. My heart and passion lie in educating people about their assets and protecting their family’s future,” shared Linville.

Just a Hometown Girl As a self-proclaimed hometown gal, Linville put down her roots in the city where she grew up—Kernersville.

“This city and all the surrounding areas are so unique. Everyone in this town, including the chamber members, town management, etc., all want to put service and energy back into local businesses.

We are all for the shopping and supporting local businesses and helping each other. There is just a small town feel here that I love,” admitted Linville.

Her enthusiasm for Kernersville has led Linville into getting involved in several local non-profit organizations. For the past 20 years, she has been a member of the Kernersville Woman’s Club, an organization that focuses on empowering women through various projects.

Through the Kernersville Woman’s Club, Linville is on a chairing committee that focuses on breast health and cancer patients and survivors. In addition, she works at the children’ ministry in her church. “I have a seven-year-old daughter and got involved in the children’s ministry with her. This is a vital part of our church, and it is important for children to have a good grounding, be exposed to the community, and learn about citizenship, giving back, and leadership,” explained Linville.

Her passion for giving back is also seen through her Allstate agency. Allstate partners with the national organization, Purple Purse. This nonprofit provides assistance to victims of financial and domestic abuse. Locally, Linville’s business works with the organization, Next Step Ministries. During the month of October, the company will be holding a donation drive for the charity.

“At our office, we have donation bins where you can drop off paper products, cleaning supplies, and monetary donations. Next Step Ministries recently opened a new safe house, and they are trying to stock it with various products.

If you make a donation, you’ll receive a purple tassel. This tassel raises awareness for domestic violence and financial abuse. As a business owner, I see that my agency’s mission and ministry is to give back and help those in need,” said Linville.

Girl Power at Allstate Four other staff members work with Linville at Allstate. Together, the team shares similar goals and has customer service experience. However, there is also something else the group has in common. “It wasn’t intentional and just happened that way, but my staff is all-female. We all have the same vision, drive, and mission that works well together. They are a great support team,” said Linville. Two of the staff members work in customer service and retention. The other two employees are sales producers and are licensed to write policies and bind coverage. Linville feels as if the company is in a good position for the coming years.

“I wanted to have a career where I could grow, and I know I’m in the right place to do that. Also, Allstate is in an excellent position for growth, and we’re confident in the future. This is a company that is forward-thinking, and I’m grateful to be a part of it. My goal and hope is to be around for 30 more years,” related Linville.

graduated from high school in May of this year. Looking back, I am starting to recognize the difference between things that mattered over the past four years and the things that just didn’t. Socially, it seems teens tend to make the same mistakes generation after generation. Making and learning from mistakes is part of maturing. However, we can avoid a lot of regrets if we learn from those who went before us. If you read no further, here is a summary of what I learned: 1. Hang out with people who care about you.

2. Social media are usually more stressful than helpful.

3. Appreciate high school while you are in it.

4. Figure out who you want to be.

Everyone has different interests and insecurities, but I think that most—if not all—teenagers are concerned about whom they know or hang out with and who knows and wants to hang out with them. Having close friends in high school can be vital. It helped shape me into an adult and made my final years at home some of the most enjoyable in my life.

High school, though intimidating to me at first, turned out to be an amazing time; I was old enough to figure out who I am and I wasn’t supporting myself on my own. Being able to drive meant I got to take friends on spontaneous trips to the Yadkin or have sleepovers and talk to my best friend about what we thought our future would be like. It was tempting at times, but I would try not to savor these moments by stressing out about taking a picture for Instagram. Life may be really hard now, but there are always things to appreciate. You don’t have to look too closely for them. Instead, step back. Life doesn’t have to revolve around flicking through a social media feed. You can enjoy seeing your siblings every morning (they are the people you will know for the rest of your life). Or you can find the joy in driving the beaten path to school with the windows down and music up, or introducing yourself to a new person in the halls (there are an unlimited amount of people and personalities to discover).

Like most, I was drawn to the popular kids. However, you don’t want to make it to the popular group, then find out you don’t actually like the people there. Fortunately, my friend group genuinely cared about each other, and we pushed each other toward better habits and lifestyles. If you are wondering if you are pursuing the right people, watch how they act, treat others, and what they think is important enough to talk about. If their priorities are similar to yours and you feel like you would benefit from being in their environment, then you could have a great experience. Nobody in high school has it all figured out, but you can surround yourself with the people you know will push you to be a better person, because they care about you.

As most people know and many parents remind us, “High school is the time to figure out who you are.” I have found that who you are may affect, but does not rely on: A.) What you look like (i.e., makeup, clothing style, and fitness); B.) What people think of you (especially on social media); and C.) Whom you hang out with (or whether you have a boyfriend or girlfriend). The unkempt quirks (like my eyebrow cock or tendency to lie flat on my back in people’s front yard when I get tired) and foundational characteristics (like my minimalism and attentiveness) I displayed in my younger years were shaped into a unique, steady personality in high school. Your personality can change throughout your life, but habits you form now tend to stick.

Social media in high school, at least for me, caused a lot of stress and jealousy. The anxiety of wanting to portray on Instagram or Facebook that I was having endless pictureperfect memories resulted from the twinges of jealousy caused by these types of photos in my feed. Snapchat was another social media outlet that caused some trouble in high school for me. I wasn’t active on Snapchat for long, mainly because it was stressful keeping my makeup perfect 24/7 or getting the angles right. Social media are an explosive new way to communicate, but they can also be a slippery slope. Try and make your posts about sharing sweet memories with your friends, instead of portraying something false or trying to collect “likes.”

Honestly, with the number of high school dramas, teen literature, and common clichés, you have probably already heard most of the advice given above. I have actually found a lot of truth in the sayings like, “You become who you hang out with”; “It doesn’t matter what people think of you”; “Live like you were dying”; and “Be yourself.”

High school is a stressful time, both educationally and socially, and there isn’t a simple equation to fix this conundrum. Work hard, so at the end of high school you can say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim 4:7).

BY ROBIN BRALLEY Despite having to limit my time in the sun and wear a swim shirt to protect my skin, my Florida vacation was everything I could hope for! Second to being with my favorite humans on the planet, I was surrounded by God’s beautiful creations, splendid sunsets, palm trees, and amazing wildlife. Wonderful days spent on the beach, eating delicious food and the best ice cream ever from Haze Ice Cream in Indian Rocks Beach! A sunset sail, walks on the beach, completing a jigsaw puzzle and fun nights listening to local musicians at Crabby Bill’s and John’s Pass. No doubt, heading to one of my favorite destinations the day after finishing six weeks of radiation was the perfect way to celebrate finishing yet another milestone in my journey!

THE BREAST VACATION! Apparently having cancer has turned off my perceptiveness to upcoming surprises. That or I have some very stealthy friends! I was totally surprised when my dear friends, Michele, Keela and Sandy, held a prayer circle for myself and my friend Julie, battling pancreatic cancer, right before we started chemotherapy in December. I was totally surprised in July when the Pink Heals fire trucks roared into my neighborhood while I was recuperating from my mastectomy. Three for three, can you believe I was totally surprised when a large group of friends gathered to shower me with love and overwhelm me with their generous gifts for “The BREAST” vacation? Keela Johnson, friend and sister by choice, organized an amazing night that I’ll never forget. She is a cancer survivor herself and is a constant beacon of hope for me on this journey I find myself on. I thank each and every person that was a part of that and a special thanks to Julie and Butch Holland for allowing us to be a guest at their vacation home in Beaufort. We are so excited for this upcoming time to relax!

KINDNESS RULES! I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all the wonderful kindnesses shown to me over these past few months. I apologize for not being able to name everyone individually, but you know who you are and you know I am forever thankful for each and every one of you! Neighbor Dan has continued to shower me with a neverending supply of yummy soup from his restaurant, Mikhael’s Cafe & Catering, in Greensboro. So much so, that I have been able to share with many of my friends and family. Neighbors Suzie and Katherine have taken over my Panera Bread pick-up duty for the Clemmons Food Pantry until I can take it back over.

Annette Eaton, a friend I haven’t done a very good job of keeping up with, sent me the most fun surprise for vacation! How do you like my hat and glasses? Just know that kindnesses matter, big or small, they each matter, so never underestimate the power that one small act can have!

I will miss her radiance! I can feel myself getting stronger with every day. My hair continues to grow, and folks still ask if they can feel it, but I can tell it is probably about to start looking crazy as it continues to grow, but be too short to cut or style.

I REMAIN GRATEFULL AND HOPEFULL!

I’m definitely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Still getting a drug called Herceptin every three weeks, which is no big deal as far as side effects. I just had my follow-up visit with my radiation oncologist, Dr. Karen Winkfield and I don’t have to see her for a year. She is absolutely radiant, so while I don’t miss having to see her for the cancer,

Top 5 Motivations to Work Out That Don’t Involve Looking Good

fitness world can be a shallow place, but once you move past the aesthetics involved with working out, a whole new, beautiful world will open up to you. I’m sharing my personal revelations and motivations I’ve learned as a fitness professional for ten years.

Here’s a little bit of a back story. I graduated from N.C. State with both an undergraduate and graduate degree in fashion marketing. From there, I decided to keep on the marketing track for several years. All the while, I taught group fitness classes once or twice a week. I originally started teaching group fitness because I had grown up dancing my whole life (ballet, jazz, hip-hop) and wanted to continue to stay in shape. Teaching fitness seemed an easy next step for me.

What started as something small, blossomed into a true passion for teaching fitness. I began to look forward only to those few hours a week I taught classes and ended up growing tired and complacent in my marketing career. In December, I decided to make the plunge into teaching fitness classes full-time, and am now Engagement Director of Group Fitness at the Robinhood Family YMCA. I could not be more excited to be in charge of the fitness classes!

HERE ARE MY FAVORITE REASONS TO WORK OUT: 1. I mentioned this earlier, but I feel better when I work out. I also take better care of myself when I spend a few hours in the gym a week. I eat better, I drink more water, and I try not to go crazy on the sugar (“try” is the key word here). I stand up taller; I’m not winded when I go up stairs, and my blood pressure is pretty awesome. I owe all of that to working out.

2. I work out because it makes me confident. Confidence, for me, is not gathered from, “Oh, my biceps are bulging out.”

Confidence is deeper when it’s a challenge you have accepted and won. For example, set a goal of 4 workouts a week and when you beat that goal, you become confident because you are proud of yourself.

3. I work out because statistics show that people who live an active lifestyle, live longer and healthier lives. I want to live long, have kiddos and see them have children, but I also want to do that while being healthy. Working out lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on your heart. It also increases good HDL cholesterol and reduces bad LDL cholesterol.

4. My mood is improved when I work out. My husband always jokes when I’m in a crummy mood, “Did you work out today?” A brisk workout is like a bad-mood repellant; it eases your stress and anxiety while making you feel happier and more relaxed.

5. Being physically active helps you sleep better at night. Let’s be honest, we all love a good night’s sleep. A recent National Sleep Foundation study found that up to 67 percent of regular exercisers say they get a good night’s sleep! Planks: Put both feet into the straps (there isn’t really a super-graceful way to do this) and then walk your hands out into a plank position. Your wrists need to be under your shoulders, your back needs to be straight and strong, and glutes engaged. Hold the plank for 1 minute (or as long as you can with good form).

Family-Friendly Dining at Thai Harmony

away in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem is a delightful surprise—authentic Thai food that is mouthwateringly delicious. Thai Harmony is a hidden gem that everyone in the family will love!

Owners Aratporn and Nui Ruangrat are a mother-daughter team who are originally from Bangkok, Thailand. They have lived in North Carolina since 2001, with Nui originally attending Forsyth Tech for their MRI technician program. However, both women had spent years working in various Thai restaurants, including restaurants in Tennessee and Colorado, before deciding to open their own in December 2015.

Nui shared, “My mother has always loved to cook, and I love meeting the customers and getting to know them. We are just Thai people cooking Thai food. This is what we’ve done for years, and it’s wonderful to be able to own our own restaurant.”

While Nui handles the business and marketing part of the business, Aratporn is all about excellent cuisine and presentation. Thai Harmony has a beautiful dining room to be enjoyed, with large TVs that are perfect for watching Monday night football as a family! Or, enjoy letting Thai Harmony come to you through their catering or delivery service.

Thai Harmony offers nightly specials and drink specials. “Sushi and Appetizer” specials are available Sunday–Thursday nights from 5–6 PM. And Thai Harmony is the only Thai restaurant in the Triad that offers live jazz. Please check their website for dates and times.

But the best part—the food! Thai Harmony offers an extensive lunch and dinner menu, as well as a sushi menu and on Sundays, a brunch menu.

Their sushi is made with the freshest seafood imaginable; it is presented in a way that is almost too pretty to eat! The Ex-Girlfriend Roll is the restaurant’s most popular sushi, due in part to the creative name that sparks curiosity.

It’s a well-seasoned sushi made with shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy crab, cooked shrimp, eel sauce, and topped with a honey mayonnaise. It’s a sushilovers dream!

But don’t miss out on the Rainbow Roll or Dragon Roll! Both of these beautiful dishes are decadent examples of authentic sushi that everyone in your party will love!

For seafood lovers, Thai Harmony is a great option, simply because they are masterful at creating wonderful seafood dishes that incorporate a melody of flavors. The Seafood Salad is one such signature dish and is available through the fall. A mix of shrimp, scallops, mussels, and crabmeat, this salad of the sea is topped with a homemade Thai Chili Dressing with Crispy Kale.

Indulge yourself with the Lobster Curry—a fresh lobster tail served on a bed of zucchini and carrot noodles. What a wonderful way to trick the kids into eating some vegetables! They will never know they are getting something healthy!

The Beef Salad is another popular choice, with a combination of beef, cucumber, scallions, and it comes decorated with a flower-shaped carrot and a tomato wedge. This dish (actually, any dish!) can be made spicy or mild, depending on how much “heat” the diner wants in their dish!

There’s

nothing like a soft, cuddly Teddy bear to give comfort to a child. You probably had one when you were young and maybe kept it to pass on to your child. In these days of electronic gadgets and things that do all sorts of stuff for us, isn’t it nice to just have something soft to hold and hug? Stuffed animals have been favorites for generations, with the friendly-faced Teddy bear one of the most loved.

As I remember, my bear was brown and kind of disheveled looking, probably more from me than by design. My daughter had two favorite bears that still live at her house—one a handcrafted plaid bear made by a family friend and one a blue, squishy Teddy.

Teddy bears have been a bigger part of history than most of us can imagine. . . some “bear” facts: 1899 – In Germany, the first stuffed bear was created by Margarete Steiff, who registered 23 patents for her design.

1902 – In the US, Morris Michtom sold the first Teddy bear in November, named after President Theodore Roosevelt (with his permission).

President Roosevelt later attended a wedding where 3,000 Teddy bears were used as part of the wedding decorations.

1906 – Teddy bear was first included in the Oxford dictionary.

By 1907, one million Teddy bears had been sold.

1912 – As a gift of mourning for those lost on the Titanic, a black bear was created by the Steiff manufacturer. Only 82 were made; one reportedly sold later at auction for $136,000.

1919 – Teddy bears flew as mascots on the non-stop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Ireland.

1924 – Walt Disney released its first animated bear feature—Alice and the Three Bears.

1925 – J. K. Farnell, a British company, introduced the Alpha bear, which was thought to be an inspiration for Winnie the Pooh.

1926 – Winnie the Pooh was published by A. A. Milne. In 1959, Walt Disney acquired the rights to Winnie the Pooh and released his first movie in 1975.

1944 – Smokey the Bear became the mascot for the US Forest Fire Prevention Campaign: “Remember, Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires.” Since 2008, Sam Elliott has been the voice of Smokey the Bear.

1958 – Another well-known bear came into publication— Paddington Bear.

1985 – Christie’s of London held the first teddy bear only auction.

1995 – Magellan T. Bear, the mascot for Elk Creek Elementary School in Pine, Colorado, flew on the space shuttle. She was a well-traveled bear!

2006 – Traveling Teddy Bear has her own Facebook page (check it out).

Teddy bears are for the young, young-at-heart, and, really, any age. Apple Cider Donuts

October screams pumpkin spice and everything nice, right? But what about the other seasonal flavors that typically get put on the back burner (pun intended!) for Fall? Seasonal produce, such as cranberries, butternut squash and pears, is all at the peak of freshness from September through November, as well as spices, including maple, cinnamon and nutmeg. I’m here to provide you hopefully with a relief from the pumpkin craziness with an apple cider recipe that is perfect as an after-dinner sweet treat or a slow morning’s pastry with a hot cup of apple cider or coffee.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

1½ cup apple cider

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees with donut pan in oven.

2 cups all-purpose flour

2. Boil cider for 15 minutes to reduce to half. Pour into measuring cup.

1 teaspoon baking powder

3. Directly into measuring cup, add melted butter, milk, vanilla and egg. Stir to combine.

1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt 1 egg ¾ cup milk 2 Tablespoons butter, melted

4. In a separate bowl, add flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Whisk to combine.

5. Add wet ingredients to dry and whisk to incorporate.

6. Remove donut pan from oven and spray with nonstick spray. Spoon mixture into donut molds ¾ full. Bake for 10–12 minutes.

½ cup sugar

7. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

1 teaspoon cinnamon

8. Once donuts are finished baking, remove from pan and brush with melted butter. Coat with cinnamon-sugar and enjoy warm.

2 teaspoons vanilla
