Election 2016 is finally here. While this has been one of the nastiest elections on record and most folks I’ve talked to aren’t thrilled with the candidates on either side—please go VOTE! We have to choose someone and so voting, in my opinion, is not an option but a must! Yes, we have our share of issues and things that need to be improved. But take a look at so many other countries—would you want to live anywhere else? I say America IS great, let’s keep it that way!

I think of November and immediately Thanksgiving comes to mind. I love this holiday for many reasons, but mostly for its purpose of being thankful.

I try very hard to be grateful for the blessings and even the not-so-blessed things in my life, for many times those turn out to be blessings in the end.

And if for nothing else, those bad things help you appreciate the good!

I couldn’t think of a more fitting cover story for our November issue than that of the Brandon family. I happen to have attended church with them for many years and Mark and Brandy certainly lead their children by example.

Both are very involved and giving back in their community. Several years ago, their middle child Olivia, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. In no time, they immediately became involved with the local chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation—aka JDRF. This issue is full of wonderful articles about various topics, organizations and events. We are very excited about our Kids’ Morning Out event this month! It will actually be an afternoon event on Veteran’s Day, November 11th and will offer up free admission to the Wake Forest women’s basketball game. Activities begin at 3pm and the game starts at 4pm (see our ad on page 35.) Should be a fun afternoon for kids and their parents!

Enjoying the Day of Thanksgiving…

Without Regret!

BY LISA S.T. DOSS Did you know our food consumption habits increase by 50% if we are seated in the comfort and pleasure of loved ones? It is easy to understand why the Thanksgiving holiday often marks the beginning of a downhill food battle.

From the moment our foot is placed over the threshold of a family member’s door, we become instantly surrounded by the comfort of socialization and the need to take in high-calorie, carb-enriched foods. This year, arrive at the season of thankfulness with a plan to enjoy the spirit of Thanksgiving.

THE MORNING ROUTINE: Start the day with a great balanced breakfast that will leave your stomach feeling satisfied (without the desire to overindulge on enticing snacks.)

• Consider easing your time in the morning hours by preparing breakfast the night before.

Whether you chose to make apple or pumpkin muffins or cook steel-cut oats in your crock pot overnight, the family will appreciate having a home- baked meal ready to serve Thanksgiving morning, and perhaps the day after, too.

• A special treat would be to make cranberry or sweet potato pancakes.

• To diversify breakfast, include fruits such as grapes or apple slices.

SNACKS: Whether the socialization occurs in the kitchen or the living room, you are immediately surrounded by bowls of delectable foods. There are finger foods, meat trays, nuts, cookies and chocolates. While it is tempting to grab a plate and join the crowd, the alternative is to come prepared by bringing a fruit or vegetable tray, and a water bottle of infused cucumber, which suppresses the appetite. (Yes, consuming water throughout the day will also help your belly feel full.)

STEP OUTSIDE: Invite your younger and older cousins to take a stroll in the neighborhood.

outcry of tired young legs who want to return to the house. If you seek a cardiovascular activity, take the dogs or the baby for a long walk, or bring a bicycle. Large backyards may inspire a game of baseball, touch football, and even capture the flag.

By leaving the house and getting some fresh air and exercise, it will help burn a few calories and increase your energy levels, too. In fact, try to take a walk several times throughout the day.

THE THANKSGIVING FEAST: While the dinner table features elegant plates and utensils, water goblets and seasonal linens, the size of the plate may make anyone feel anxious. Before you take the first scoop, consider what three or four items will occupy your plate. By reducing the size of the plate to half, there is no longer the impulse to heap on large portions and continuing to eat well past the point of feeling full. In fact, you can fill your plate with reasonable-sized portions of foods you dearly love.

Make the promise not to return for a second helping.

In exchange, you will have room to accept one slice of pie. Remember, throughout the meal, chew slowly and lay down your fork often. If you feel comfortable, delight the family with a good story, which will give you time to breathe and anticipate the next delicious bite.

PROVIDING COMFORT: The Thanksgiving holiday can be filled with stress and anxiety, or personal challenges.

Invitations to spend the day with the family will be turned down for any number of reasons. It is up to you to reach out and offer support, understanding and love. Those who lost a loved one recently may appreciate an intimate breakfast or time spent together in the morning hours. An elder cousin or great uncle who lives in town may need to be driven, and returned home, after a mere two hours. The time you give to loved ones of all ages may be the simplest gift of all.

Healthy foods at the holidays seem scarce. So, I am more focused on his eating than on enjoying this time. Please help me put some joy into holiday eating.

Concerned Mom #FeelingLikeTheFoodPolice A: Concerned Mom, Worrying about holiday eating is a common concern for many parents. You are right on track by wanting everyone to enjoy eating. Eating holiday foods should be free of feelings of shame and guilt. We want kids to learn to enjoy all foods. Here are a few tips to help kids at the holidays: •K eep a routine around eating. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, feeding a family routinely may be less of a priority. Families skip meals or snacks because they are too busy. Or skip a meal to save calories after overindulging at a holiday meal. Kids who come to meals too hungry are more likely to overeat and not listen to body cues.

Keep eating on a usual and predictable routine with meals and sit-down snacks. This routine allows kids to come to the meal hungry and ready to eat what they need to be satisfied.

•H elp your child to pay attention while eating. Paying attention to eating during the holidays is hard. Kids mindlessly eat as food sits out at a family gathering. Or stand while eating at a party. Paying attention to eating

•M ake forbidden foods not forbidden. Forbidden foods are things that we don’t allow ourselves and kids to eat regularly, like candy, ice cream and chips. When we do this, the pie and cookies become more desirable than fruits and vegetables. Kids are more likely to overeat what they are not allowed to have. Parents can help their kids to enjoy eating by not forbidding any food. As a parent, you are in charge of how often any type of food is offered. Teach kids how to enjoy these foods by offering cookies and milk as a snack, or include a dessert with a meal sometimes.

•T rust kids to do their job with eating. When we do our job with feeding our kids (keeping a routine, having sit-down meals and snacks, offering a balance of foods), kids will succeed in their job of eating. Celebrating National Adoption Month

BY CAROLYN S. PETERSON Many years ago, friends of mine adopted a little girl from Guatemala, and I watched the process from beginning to end. I remember asking my friend what she would tell her soon-to-be-daughter when the question of “where did I come from?” would arise. She said, “I’ll tell her the whole story and that although she didn’t grow under my heart, she grew in it.”

Such is the loving sentiment of families who choose to adopt.

CAS Communications & Development Coordinator. There are also courses on attachment and bonding, and cultural aspects of a child’s birth country. After the home study, the adoption agency helps each family prepare their paperwork for US Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the placing country’s government.

When Leslie and Matt Williams of Winston-Salem wanted to add to their family of Wade, 7 and Ansley, 4, they contacted CAS.

With the process now underway, Leslie and Matt were preparing for the arrival of their child. “Once we committed to adopt, we began to long for our child to arrive. Eventually, we were presented with a child to adopt: a boy, eight months old. I would go on runs in my neighborhood and pray for him, his situation, his care, his birth parents,” Leslie recalled. As the Williams waited to be summoned to Korea for a court date and to meet their son in person, CAS and a partner agency, Family and Children’s Agency, prepared the Williams for their adoption through continued support, education, and logistical planning.

A Special Place in the Heart

Welcoming a Child Home

Growing up with a brother adopted from Korea, Leslie always had a desire to expand her family through adoption. “Before Matt and I were married, we talked about adoption, and we were in agreement about it. Having a brother from South Korea and considering that our adopted child could identify with him, I was drawn there, but Matt spoke fluent Spanish, so we also considered adopting a child from Latin America” recalled Leslie. Once they decided on adopting from South Korea, the Williams began searching for an agency. They chose Carolina Adoption Services, which offers a networking program that allows North Carolina residents to adopt from South Korea.

Getting Ready for the New Addition

After a total of 23 months of preparation and waiting, plus two trips to South Korea, the Williams finally arrived home with their new addition in July 2015. They chose the name Crosland for their son, a name with significant meaning as both Leslie’s maiden surname, and a name meaning “crossing land.” Crosland was nearly 19 months old by then, and there were some adjustments in those first few months. “We had to realize that Crosland’s world as he knew it had been completely altered. He was unable to sleep for more than 3 hours, his surroundings were different, he was around people he didn’t know…life had changed, and it takes time to adjust,” Leslie commented. Although the immediate transition was difficult, Crosland has thrived in his new family.

The journey of adoption begins with a home-study designed to prepare each family for the unique experience of adopting a child. “During the home-study, parents complete education courses relevant to the type of adoption they are pursuing, whether that’s a trans-racial adoption, a child with special needs, or an older child,” said Ethanie Good,

On their trips overseas to visit Crosland, the Williams met two other families adopting from South Korea, and the families formed a support system once they returned home. “We share updates concerning our sons, what is working well, what is presenting [itself] as difficult…we get together for playdates,” said Leslie. She says staying connected to other

“We want Crosland to grow up being able to identify with other Korean-American adoptees, but also with a cultural awareness of his heritage, and some means of doing that are through these play dates, cooking Korean dishes, and incorporating Korean culture into our lives,” said Leslie.

With the adoption process complete, CAS continues to be there for the Williams family and other adoptive families.

Local radio station WBFJ–89.3 FM, “Your Family Station,” was out in full force during the recent 10-day run (September 30th– October 9th) of the 134th Dixie Classic Fair. WBFJ broadcast live every hour the fair was open—over 125 hours! All of the WBFJ staff was present, including Bonnie Hilton, Cindy Davis, Tonia Cornett, Tami Rumfelt, Verne Hill, Kurt Myers, John Hill, Wally Decker, Lana Hedgecock, Tracy Webb, David Bumgarner and Kat Borecky, in addition to nearly 100 volunteers.

WBFJ–FM has served the Triad since 1994, playing Contemporary Christian Music in a 24hour format. Attracting a diverse and faithful listener base, WBFJ first appeared at the Dixie Classic Fair in 1996.

In addition to the annual fair broadcast, WBFJ’s Plinko machine has become a staple at the fair, raising thousands of dollars each year to support local non-profits. The Grand Stand was also filled with an audience of over 3,500 for a concert that featured The Passion Band with Kristian Stanfill—the band’s first Triad appearance. WBFJ also sponsored a day of the Clock Tower Stage with Jim Cole and a variety of local artists.

The WBFJ “Heavenly Cake Contest” was the “most entered” contest at the fair this year.

Over $800 was awarded to the top-three finishers. Their co-sponsor for the Heavenly Cake Contest, King’s Classic Bakery, sold slices of the award-winning cakes at the fair from their location in Yesterday Village.

Lights, Music, Magic!

Set to kick off the holiday season with its spectacular presentation of whimsy, music, and fun, the Tanglewood Festival of Lights is thrilled to unfold its magic for its 25th-anniversary season.

Tradition at its finest—no Christmas season is complete without a visit to this much-loved extravaganza, which will light up Tanglewood this year from November 18th, 2016, until January 1st, 2017, open nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Applauded as one of the most elaborate light shows in the Southeast, this is one event that always makes the family’s holiday calendar.

“We are so honored to have been a part of families’ holiday tradition for the past 25 years,” explains Jessica Sanders, Marketing and Events Manager for Forsyth County Parks and Recreation. “Each year we have so much fun talking to families who have attended each season. The show has grown significantly in the past 25 years, and we hope that you will come celebrate this anniversary with us!”

Wild Blue Yonder Aviation History Month

BY VONDA HENDERSON Kitty Hawk and North Carolina, “First in Flight.” The Wright brothers made aviation history in 1903 with their Kitty Hawk flight. The citizens of the Outer Banks area were instrumental in helping make that flight a reality. But, that’s not the only aviation moment in North Carolina history.

ROBERT MORGAN, Asheville, was the pilot of the famous B-17 bomber, the “Memphis Belle.” The Belle completed 25 combat missions without losing any crew members. The Memphis Bell flew 148 hours and dropped 60 tons of bombs.

Every major part of the Belle was replaced at least once.

VIOLA GENTRY, from Rockingham County, learned to fly in 1924 and was the first woman in North Carolina to earn her pilot’s license. Gentry also set a world record in 1928 for the first non-refueling endurance record. On that one single flight, Viola flew eight hours, six and a half minutes.

On May 14, 1908, the first passenger flight in a Wright plane occurred.

The first helicopter flight also took place in North Carolina. WILLIAM LUTHER PAUL of Carteret County built the “Bumble Bee” in 1907, using four motorcycle engines.

The Bumble Bee was the first aircraft to lift straight off the ground. A model is housed at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort.

JOHN HILL, a Winston-Salem farmer, built the first dirigible in 1902; however, it didn’t fly.

In 1916, during World War I, KIFFIN ROCKWELL, from Asheville, helped form the Lafayette Escadrille, a squad of Americans helping the French Army.

Rockwell was the first American to shoot down an enemy plane.

In 1944, during World War II, another North Carolinian, GEORGE PREDDY, from Greensboro, shot down six German planes over Berlin within a five-minute time span.

GEORGE HOLLOMAN, of Northampton County, engineered, and was a passenger on, the first automatic airplane landing in 1937.

North Carolina has had three airfields important to war efforts. Pope Airfield, located near Fayetteville, was built after World War I; Seymour Johnson Air Base, in Goldsboro; and the blimp field near Weeksville, used for coastal surveillance for enemy submarines during World War II. North Carolina women have several aviation firsts as well.

GEORGIA “TINY” BROADWICK, from Henderson, was the first woman to parachute from a plane. She was also the first woman to parachute into water and the first person to make a planned free-fall descent. During World War I, she acted as an advisor to the Army Air Corps. She made 1,000 plus jumps in her career.

• There are 13,993 certified pilots and instructors in North Carolina.

Wake Forest Basketball Welcomes Back Old Friends This Season

It’s that time of year again, when you hear the consistent thumping of basketballs bouncing on driveways and in gymnasiums across the nation; and that can only mean one thing…ACC basketball is back!

This year promises to bring lots of excitement and anticipation, especially for fans at Lawrence Joel Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum.

Head Coach Danny Manning and the rest of the Wake Forest Demon Deacon players and staff are ready, and can’t wait to get started.

This year’s team and schedule should provide lots of high-flying, show-stopping excitement with a dash of nostalgia thrown in for loyal Demon Deacon Fans.

The home schedule of games played at The Joel begins on Friday night, November 4th, when the Deacons welcome a familiar face. Wake Forest alumnus, former unanimous selection for “ACC Player of the year,” named “National Player of the Year” by FOX, College Insider and Basketball Digest, drafted in the first round of the NBA, and NBA All-Star Josh Howard is at the helm of crosstown Piedmont International University. Howard is in his first year as Head Coach of the Bruins, and Tie Dye Nation is sure to embrace him in his new role. This special exhibition game begins at 7:00 pm.

The season officially tips off on November 11th, when the Highlanders of Radford University from the Big South Conference come to visit. This is the same program that accomplished dramatic wins on the road last season at Georgetown and Penn State. In a short turnaround, the Bison of Bucknell, last season’s regular season title winners out of the Patriot League, come into Winston-Salem on Sunday, November 13th. Next, Wake fans can enjoy celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday early when the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina, in their first season in the Sun Belt Conference and led by former Clemson Coach Cliff Ellis, visit LJVM Coliseum on Wednesday, November 23rd. Last season, Coastal made it to the semifinal game of the 2016 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) before losing to

UC Irvine. After a trip to Northwestern and Richmond, the Deacons come back home to entertain Conference USA’s 49ers of Charlotte, led by 2nd-year coach and another ACC alumnus, former Georgia Tech standout Mark Price, on Tuesday, December 6th. The Deacs finish out their non-conference schedule on Thursday, December 22nd, facing the Tigers of Louisiana State University. Last season LSU lost in the semi-finals of the SEC Tournament to #1 seed Texas A&M, and fell just short of making the NCAA Tournament.

On Saturday night, December 31st, New Year’s Eve, the Deacons launch their home ACC schedule against the Tigers of Clemson University, allowing Wake Forest fans an opportunity to get an early start on their holiday celebration. Then on Tuesday, January 3rd, the Boston College Eagles are in town, followed by an all-important matchup with the 2016 Final Four runner-up Tarheels of North Carolina, on Wednesday, January 11th. The following Wednesday, January 18th, the Miami Hurricanes, who finished in a second-place tie in the ACC last season and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, are at LJVM; and then on Saturday, January 28th, the Deacons are visited by the nation’s top-ranked Duke Blue Devils. The February slate begins with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets coming in on Saturday, February 4th; N.C. State Wolfpack follows on Saturday, February 11th; and then the Pittsburgh Panthers on February 22nd. The Deacons finish out their home schedule on Wednesday, March 1st, against the Louisville Cardinals.

November Is Non-Profit Awareness Month

How Can You Help?

Have you ever stopped to think about how important non-profit organizations are to the quality of life of our area? From helping the most vulnerable segments of our population, to medical support and research, to arts and music, to education, there isn’t a part of your life that isn’t somehow impacted by the services offered by a non-profit.

Look below the surface, and you have an abundance of life that is vying for space, sometimes things get predatory, and the activity is never-ending, but on the surface, all continues to look calm.”

Lin goes on to say that “even though marketing for a non-profit is similar to marketing a business, one key difference is that non-profits have to figure out ways to do more with less.”

From creating websites and ads to developing capital campaigns and attracting volunteers, there are any number of ways LTMG works to help its non-profit clients to succeed. The Good That Comes From Giving Back

Companies that take the lead by getting involved in their community distinguish themselves from their competitors. For the past 76 years, giving back to their community has always been part of who Ireland Insurance is and what they do.

Whether it’s by supporting a local charity or giving a scholarship, Mark Brandon, President and majority owner of Ireland Insurance, knows that there are things more important than making the next dollar. Being a business supported by a community for as long as Ireland Insurance has been in Yadkinville, NC, is something he doesn’t take for granted, and reaching out to others to offer his company’s support is really what doing good business is all about. In the corporate world, a sense of community and strengthening ties with those around you sometimes takes a back seat to profits, but for Mark Brandon and Ireland Insurance, what he does on a daily basis, giving clients first-class service and attention to detail, allows him to do what he is passionate about…helping others and bringing awareness to charities and causes that are near his heart.

“Ireland Insurance was founded by Nelson Ireland in 1940, who was married to my great aunt, Jesse Brandon Ireland.

Upon Nelson’s untimely death at age 49, Jesse reached out to my grandfather, Paul Brandon, to help her in the agency.

My grandfather Paul, father Tom Brandon and I are the thirdgeneration owners and have always believed in surrounding ourselves with good people, and giving back to those around us. Our family is hands-on in the business; my dad, Tom, does our public relations, going out every day and

‘shooting the breeze’ with people in the Triad; my wife, Brandy, is our bookkeeper; and my sister, Amy, is the office manager. But the ‘good people’ aren’t just the people who work for the agency; we make an effort to choose good companies whose products will meet the needs of our clients. Our clients are truly part of our extended family, and their loyalty to us from generation to generation is something we don’t take for granted. They understand that for small local businesses like Ireland Insurance to thrive, they have to support us and use our products. The products we sell are world-class financial risk protection products, but they are delivered by a friend who understands the needs of them and our area,” said Mark Brandon. For the Brandon family, everything comes down to how they can help make their community better through giving time and support.

A Mindset of Doing Good Reaps Good Results Insuring those things in your life that you value and having a financial strategy in place are important choices to make. Ireland Insurance has been helping their clients with those types of decisions for many years, serving their clients with a passion for helping others. Outside of the office, Mark follows the other passions of his life.

“One of the biggest issues a person will face when they have a passion to help and make a difference is finding the avenues to apply this passion. Find something you are passionate about and dive into it!

Many of my passions derive from my association with Rotary or my church,

and my wife Brandy volunteers with several organizations that advocate for children and the disadvantaged, not to mention the hours every week she puts in at our church. We look for ways to use our hands in the community. It’s important for us to involve our children when possible and to lead them by example. To us, that example requires being with people, using your hands and feet to impact lives positively, and not just firing off a social media post,” Mark commented.

Some of the organizations and causes the Brandons have chosen as a family to be contributors and activists for are JDRF [present name; formerly known as The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation], The Yadkin Family YMCA, and The Yadkin Arts Council. They also offer a scholarship, The Tim Brandon Memorial Scholarship, to a senior basketball player at Forbush High School. Mark’s brother, Tim, was killed in an auto accident when he was 16, and he loved basketball.

This is the family’s way to give back to young people who spend a lot of time working on their basketball passion while maintaining excellence in the classroom. What people focus on outside of their business usually tells a story of why they are passionate about a cause, and that’s the case with the Brandons, too.

Why a Cause Becomes a Passion In 2011, at the age of 8, the Brandon’s daughter, Olivia, was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes. “I had to see my mom buried to cancer, my dad go through triple bypass surgery and watch my brother be buried as a young man. But one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was tell my daughter that she has a disease that will last her the rest of her life,

and she’ll have to stick a needle in herself 10–12 times a day to keep herself alive. The expression of realization that came across her face is still with me,” recalled Mark. At that moment, the cause of diabetes research and awareness became a family passion. Olivia, “Liv,” as the family calls her, is doing well now, but it is a family task and their “new normal” to keep her healthy. Her brother, Samuel, and sister, Maddy, are very helpful with Liv’s care. The family was immediately contacted by JDRF after Olivia’s diagnosis.

“It is neither in my, nor my wife’s, nature to do something halfway. We went all-in with The JDRF One Walk that happens every fall, and this year we are the chairs for the Family Teams. JDRF does so much for millions of people that have Type-1; we just want to be a little part that gets us closer to a cure, and the good news is, we are close! There are several medical breakthroughs that [make us hope] we could see a real cure within the next ten years. As a result of our daughter having diabetes, we have been made aware of how kind most people in this world are. I won’t go so far as to say it was a blessing, but it sure made me feel better about our species. Don’t believe what you read and hear—95% of people are good!” Mark said.

Mark Brandon, his family, and the team at Ireland Insurance share a simple philosophy about life. “When you think about it, there are two things people cherish most, and those are money and time. Some of the most influential people in history gave both. An example is Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine.

He could’ve patented the vaccine and become a billionaire. But the human interest in curing that awful disease was much more valuable than any amount of money. From the standpoint of time, you take Gandhi. He was not wealthy, but he gave every bit of his time in his last years to peacefully make India free. I’m inspired by true givers. When taking a class in long-term care insurance, the class material kept citing research done by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. So, I did a little research on Mr. Johnson and the Foundation. It turns out Robert Wood Johnson II gave every bit of his wealth at his death to start the Foundation. Of course, little Ireland Insurance doesn’t have the means of Mr. Johnson, but it does give me a blueprint of what I would like our business to be doing…figuring out a way to give back to the present and future, because that is really what a legacy is for anyone and any business,” commented Mark.

The system is fully integrated between the pump and sensor, with no need for a separate smartphone or CGM monitor. The AP system will give many people with T1D new freedom and peace of mind as for the first time, they may be able to sleep through the night without periodically waking up to check and manage their blood glucose levels.

But while this is a breakthrough, it is not the end goal.

From essential social interaction and warm camaraderie to good old-fashioned fun and recreation, the Social Group for Adults with Disabilities in Winston-Salem has been enormously helpful for a community of folks who needed an anchor.

Drawing on both her professional experience as former Executive Director of the Autism Society of Oregon and, even more inspiring, her personal experience with her own daughter’s struggles, founder and leader Genevieve Athens saw a void when she moved to the area and filled it as quickly as she could.

Having a daughter in her early 20s with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder—the fastest-growing developmental disability in the world) had shown her the lack of organized activities available, and although the group welcomes a range of ages, not surprisingly, most attendees are in their 20s, a pivotal time for socialization.

Genevieve launched the group in the fall of 2015, welcoming all adults with DD or Developmental Disabilities to join them.

While young children and teenagers find opportunities for fellowship and interaction throughout their school years, there are fewer organizations for adults who have a distinctive need for socialization on a regular basis. For these individuals, having common goals and struggles with those in a group they can bond with is crucial to their healthy attitude and overall well-being.

Having sponsored several similar support groups in Oregon before relocating to North Carolina, Genevieve is grateful for the response in Winston-Salem. The group is enjoying the celebration of their first anniversary and, thanks to The Piedmont Down Syndrome Association, who allowed the Social Group to use their nonprofit status to write a grant, recently received a one-year, $500 grant from Centerpointe (now Cardinal) IDD Advisory Group.

“The grant award allows us to hire a volunteer, purchase more games, cover some of the craft item costs, and have a monthly birthday celebration for 54 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

attendees,” says Genevieve.

On the third Tuesday of each month—from 6:30–8:30 at the Family Services Building—the group gathers with typically 12–15 members and a “core” membership of eight to 10.

“Our group includes individuals with a range of developmental challenges, from Down syndrome, autism disorders, and ADHD, to traumatic brain injury (TBI), mild cognitive impairment, sensory integration issues and much more,” explains Genevieve.

Those much-anticipated Tuesday night meetings engage attendees in activities from art and a seasonal monthly craft project, to board games, video games, and sometimes just friendly conversation.

Thirty-four-year-old regular Meredith Lamy says she enjoys teaching other members how to play the games she brings in to share. “The arts and crafts projects are always fun, too!” she adds.

Genevieve’s also proud of how the group’s success is a blessing to family members, as well. Donna Zayas, the mother of Manny, a 24-year-old adult with high-functioning autism who regularly attends on Tuesday nights, echoes the needs that Genevieve saw from the very beginning.

“There is such a need for more opportunities for socialization for young adults with different abilities, especially free options or minimal-cost options,” she notes. “Manny really enjoys the small group format and the comfortable, laid-back atmosphere.”

It’s not uncommon for parents to hang around and socialize, too, forming their own support system. The overwhelming positive message the group sends, and the upbeat atmosphere are contagious. Genevieve sees a bright future.

“We have the capacity to grow,” she says. “So we are encouraging more people to attend!”

Three Yard Tasks That Will Save You Money

Winterizing the yard, garden, and sheds for winter is a long and tiresome list of chores. If we look at the tasks in a different perspective, the motivation may be just enough to enjoy the crisp weather and the splendor of the fall season.

1. LEAVES! LEAVES! LEAVES! Every fall, neighborhood streets are piled tall and wide with our most valuable natural resource—leaves! All of the effort, time, and energy used to rake or blow them onto the street could be used for a greater purpose. The answer is leaf mulch, also known as leaf mold.

Why purchase bags of mulch when you can create your own? In fact, collecting leaves and allowing them to decompose is a great benefit for lawns and gardens.

You’ll discover leaf mulch also acts as a weed preventative.

1ST STEP: Wait on raking! Mow the grass with the purpose of shredding the leaves.

2ND STEP: If your lawnmower has a bag or grass-catcher, you can collect the shredded leaves quickly; otherwise, you will need to rake. (Remaining leaves will improves the soil without suffocating the grass.)

3RD STEP: Create a place for composting. Here are a few examples. lace leaves in heavy-duty •P bags, punch three holes in the bottom for drainage, water to dampen (not soak), and tie.

•E stablish a small composting area with chicken wire and water periodically. (The decomposition process takes longer) •A dding leaves to your garden will improve its texture, help them continue to absorb moisture, and will allow roots to penetrate deeper.

Leaf-loving earthworms facilitate the decomposition process and spread nitrogen, carbon and trace minerals throughout the soil.

Gardening-tool cleaning and maintenance is rarely put on the endof-year chores list; yet, it is the one task that can save you money (by preventing rust and helping them to continue to work properly year after year.)

At the beginning of the season, it is easy to buy too many perennials or seed packets during the first “shopping opportunity” of the spring season. Too often, seed packets may germinate while stored in a garage or basement, if humidity or temperatures begin to fluctuate. The best place to store seeds is in the freezer. (Except onions, most varieties will keep for three years.)

• Check your shovels, hoes, rakes, and other tools for loose handles.

• Use grinders or files to sharpen the blades of pruners, hedge- and grass clippers.

• A wire brush dipped in water will remove dried or caked-on dirt from tools such as trowels and rakes. Use a cloth to ensure tools are dry.

• With sandpaper, soften wooden handles and coat with linseed oil to preserve the wood.

• Metal parts require cleaning with steel wool; afterward, wipe the metal dry, then coat with vegetable oil to prevent rust. (Tomato cages, too!)

• Sandpaper, a wire bristle brush, or immersing the tool in strong, hot, black tea (for several hours) will remove rust.

• Empty lawn mowers and tillers of fuel. Clean the mower deck and lines of debris. This is a great time to change your tiller’s oil, clean the filter, and check the spark plugs.

• Drain and connect hoses together before storing. Including hoses, it is preferable to hang all tools to prevent moisture and rust from occurring.

The Ballet and Performing Arts Centre (BPAC) is celebrating 20 years of its take on The Nutcracker, and there is much to be proud of this year!

The Morning Sun Ideas for my column come to me in the strangest places sometimes. For instance, not long ago after dropping off my son at school one morning, I approached a long line of traffic waiting for the stoplight to turn green. The traffic was backed up about twenty cars or more at the time.

Approaching the stopped car just ahead of me, I slowed down and felt the glare of the bright morning sunshine as it popped in and out between the trees when I got closer. I stopped about a car-length-and-a-half away, and the intense sunlight was just barely shining on me through a small patch of trees. It wasn’t even bad enough for me to need to block it out with my hand. However, I saw a large tree in the same area just a couple of feet further down from where I was sitting. So I thought, I’ll just inch forward a little and let that tree block the glare of the sun out completely while I wait on the stoplight. Slowly I inched forward as the line of cars, by now behind me, moved in succession. But just as I moved a few feet further, I realized there was nothing on the other side of that tree but open space; unfortunately, I had drifted just past the tree before I realized this important piece of information. The result—now I had the full force of the bright morning sunshine glaring into my side window and directly into my eyes. “Great…,” I thought, “Just trying to make it a little better and now this happens!”

Have you ever had a similar experience? A situation where things weren’t great, but they weren’t awful either, and you thought you’d try to make it better, but instead, made it worse? When you think about it, it’s kind of a metaphor for life. You know the old idiom, “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” We think something in our life is not good, and we try to fix it, only to make it worse, and realize it really wasn’t that bad in the first place, if bad at all. I guess it’s part of our nature; as the JewishDutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza said, “Desire is the very essence of man.” It’s also believed that the continual desire for something more is the force that keeps us moving forward and growing. Of course, there are many who see life differently, such as the Dalai Lama, who said, “Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.” Then there’s James Oppenheim, the American poet and novelist, who stated, “The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance. The wise grows it

The following day, the farmer’s son attempted to ride one of the untamed horses and was thrown off, subsequently breaking his leg. When the neighbors heard, they compassionately cried, “This is a terrible misfortune,” to which the old farmer replied, “Maybe.”

So I guess the moral of this story is not to be so quick to try and jump the fence, in whatever situation in your life. Before you start to climb over, make sure the other side is really as it appears from where you’re standing and not a façade of something altogether different. Whether it’s a different job, a different relationship, a new car, a new home, or anything else.

A point best illustrated in this brief story of the Taoist Farmer (paraphrased).

The story goes that there was an old farmer who worked his crops for years. Then one day his horse ran away. After hearing the news, his neighbors said sympathetically, “Such bad luck,” to which the old farmer replied, “Maybe.”

The next morning the horse returned, this time with three more wild horses. The neighbors exclaimed, “How wonderful!” to which the old farmer replied, “Maybe.”

The day after that, some military officials came to the old farmer’s village to draft young men into the army.

However, seeing that the farmer’s son’s leg was broken, they passed him over. The neighbors congratulated the farmer, proclaiming the good news, to which the old farmer replied, “Maybe.”

This story of the Taoist farmer emphasizes that we never really know what to expect from any given situation or alternative. So, in the end, it’s probably better to simply water and fertilize the grass wherever we are and bear witness as it becomes green in its own right.

Helmet Story

Here’s a bike/helmet story.

There was this guy who enjoyed riding his bike, and tried his best to fit in with car drivers without being annoying. He would stick to the county roads away from traffic and never rode during busy early morning or late afternoon rush hours. He always rode alone to avoid blocking the roads—those packs aggravated him when he was driving, too, so why would he do that? He always got in line at stoplights, never riding to the front to have to be passed again. Still, he had the odd curse yelled at him for just being there, dodged a few cigarette butts and drink bottles, and unwillingly played a few games of “chicken,” but most drivers were polite, since he made sure to be polite himself.

One Saturday, on Skylark Road, an “interaction” with a vehicle left him lying in the road unconscious. Passing drivers called 911, and he woke up on the wrong end of the trauma team at the local hospital, where he spent the next three pretty awful days. Thankfully, he has no memory of the accident, or most of the ride before.

His wife was driving the kids to see friends in Tennessee when she got the dreaded call: “Your husband has been in an accident and is at the Emergency Department,”…which ended that trip. So the injury tally included: a severe concussion, four broken vertebrae in his neck and 2 in his upper back, along with broken ribs. Thankfully, he had no spinal cord damage and spent the next two months at home recovering, before finally being able, at least, to get back to work. He has pain every day still, but has learned to ignore it.

He does not ride anymore.

He probably physically could, but just can’t.

This is the helmet he was wearing: It looks okay. There is a flat spot on the right front, which was the first thing that hit the vehicle. However, if you look closely, you will see that the impact actually broke the helmet all the way through. He was on a flat road, probably cruising at about 20mph at the time, and crashed head first into a large hard object.

If not for this helmet, he would be dead.

Those fractures in the helmet would have been fractures in his skull and the resulting brain injury would have caused massive bleeding, brain damage and swelling, which

would likely have been fatal. He may have survived, but with significant disabilities.

The helmet saved his life, in more than one way, then.

You don’t have to be moving fast to crash and hit your head. A bicycle is inherently unstable, the slower you go, the more unstable it is. You can fall over in your driveway and suffer a traumatic brain injury.

So here is the point, finally: Parents: PUT HELMETS ON YOUR KIDS. Put them on early, so they get used to wearing them, and they will eventually do it without even thinking. The best thing is, they will probably avoid riding if they DON’T have a helmet. You know the way it works: The ONE time you don’t….

And Parents: PUT HELMETS ON YOURSELVES. How many times do you see a parent riding with helmeted kids, but without a helmet him- or herself?

Your kids need you, all of you.

This is a true story. That (former) rider was me. Thanks for reading, and be careful out there.

The Meaning of

Every year, as November and Veterans’ Day approach, people think about different ways to honor veterans. Some options are tributes and parades, but one of my favorites is listening to a veteran’s military story. You can take it a step further and record their experience for themselves, their family, and future generations to keep. You could put their story in a frame or scrapbook to preserve it. But with permission from the veteran, why not share their experience with others, including the Veterans’ History Project at the Library of Congress?

The Veterans’ History Project (VHP) is part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and was created in 2000 by the United States Congress after legislation supported by representatives of the House and senators was passed. The legislation was then signed into law on October 27th, 2000, by President Bill Clinton. The purpose of the project is to collect and preserve military experiences while allowing future generations a chance to see into the realities of military life. VHP consists of firsthand stories in audio- and video-recorded interviews, memoirs, original photographs, letters, diaries, maps, and other historical documents. These stories are from veterans who served in World War I up to the present and are no longer serving.

All branches of the military are welcome. Civilians who have also served the United States during wartime in a professional career are invited to participate. All of the stories in the project are contributed with the help of volunteers and organizations. VHP is perfect for families and friends to complete together. Boy and Girl Scout troops, as well as youth organizations are encouraged to participate.

One of the main purposes of the Veterans’ History Project is to provide history for the general public. People can access an online database on their website for research.

The collection can be used for genealogy projects, documentaries, academic papers, and personal interests.

Within the database, you can find biographical information on a veteran, as well as some digitalized collections. The biographical information contains the veteran’s name, the state of birth, and service history. Also, the Library 64 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

of Congress includes some collections in their exhibits and presentations.

Want to participate and add your favorite veteran to VHP? First, start with reading the VHP Field Kit on the website.

Within this kit, you will find an introduction to the project and information on how to participate. Also, a 15-minute long companion video to the field kit is available. Both of these packets help to prepare you for submitting veterans’ information and the guidelines to follow. Lastly, the field kit includes forms that must be submitted with the veteran’s materials. Once you and the veteran have gathered the information, send it to the Veterans’ History Project at the Library of Congress. There is no deadline for sending in information, since VHP is a continuing project. In addition to the collections, the project can be supported through donations from education and outreach efforts. Allow for four to six months for the record to be processed online.

Some tips to remember when submitting are: the “30-20-10 rule,” which states that 30 minutes is the minimum length for recorded interviews; 20 pages is the minimum for diaries, journals, and memoirs; and 10 is the minimum number of original photographs, maps, and letters, and is the minimum page limit for military documents. Materials sent in must be the originals and unedited recordings. Information can also be submitted electronically through DVDs and CDs and sent to the Library of Congress via ground shipping through UPS or FedEx. Lastly, Spanish and English field kits are available.

The Veterans’ History Project is a great way to remember your special veteran. This collection preserves his or her military experience on a national level, and people throughout the world can read about their heroic sacrifices to the United States during wartime. Through the help of this project, more veterans’ military experiences are being preserved and kept for future generations to learn about.

The concept that “the customer is always right” does not always hold up in today’s society. But, at Village Nail Spa, Owner Hannah Nguyen and her team always put the customer’s satisfaction first. What began simply enough…a woman wanting to bring beauty to her customers’ nails…became a place where people come to relax, unwind and chat with friends.

“I chose to open Village Nail Spa because I wanted to help all people have beautiful nails,” said Nguyen. “I want all my customers to feel comfortable and happy when they leave my shop.”

The comfortable setting at Village Nail Spa allows people of all ages and personalities peacefully to take some time for themselves to get pampered. “They can relax and listen to classical music (no TV) while they have massages,” Nguyen related. “We try the best we can to put smiles on all our customers’ faces.”

No one wants to come away from a day of relaxation with an infection from dirty nail files or a fungus from an unsanitary footbath. Hannah makes it abundantly clear that this will never happen at Village Nail Spa. “We take our sanitation guidelines very serious,” commented Nguyen.

“We make sure everything is individually packaged and clean.

We use disposable plastic liners for pedicures. Hygiene is a very important consideration, and disposable liners are replaced after use to assure our clients that pedicure tubs are completely clean

and safe. Our sole purpose is to prevent the spread of infectious material, such as bacteria, fungus and infectious diseases from one person to another during the soaking process. We also use disposable kits of files and buffers.”

In addition to the attention to detail for cleanliness, Hannah and her team take pampering a step further. “We serve drinks including water, soda and even wine, as well as chips,” Nguyen said. “We also offer a 15% discount for our regular customers on their birthdays.”

BY ROBIN WHITE ELLIS Dramatic displays, huffs, tears, demands, vehement denials, insisting that they are right...am I talking about a toddler or a teenager? You really aren’t sure, are you? There is a reason for that. Despite the difference in size, these two age groups share more similarities than you would think! Taking a toy away from a toddler results in the same behavior as taking a cell phone from a teenager. You have officially become the world’s cruelest parent and must suffer the repercussions. Both age groups have a fierce desire for independence, which is undermined by a miasma of wild mood swings.

another aspect in common, and that is their sense of identity. A toddler is slowly discovering who he or she is as a little person, with decided opinions and needs. A teenager does the same thing, on a slightly deeper level. Teenagers are at the genesis of adult awakening, and struggling to find their place in the world. This time is likely more frightening and difficult for the teens. Toddlers always have the adults in their lives to fall back on and take care of their every need. Teenagers are aware of the fact that, at some point, they will need to make it on their own, which is something they have yet to face.

Years may have passed since your child’s noteworthy “terrible twos,” so it is safe to assume the worst is over, and you become lulled into a false sense of security. Parents, heed these words and do not waver your constant vigilance, because you are being subjected to the world’s cruelest trick! Your self-sufficient offspring will, at some point in their age of teendom, become as irrational and overwrought as they were as tots...except now they have a larger vocabulary and much more about which to complain.

So remember when those times come that send you into deep prayer (and possibly wine) to pull on every ounce of patience you have. You are helping a real human being to form, and they are not only watching all you do, they truly need you. In fact, these toddlers and teens need you far more than they know!

They need to feel safe and secure in your unconditional love, no matter how much they test you and work on your every nerve!

Once those brains reach the fully developed stage, they will thank you and regret every gray hair they put upon your head... and then you can milk it for all it is worth!

Why must we endure this all over again? There is actually a scientific reason behind it (so you must not assume that you are being punished for known or unknown misdeeds). The human brain continues to develop into a person’s twenties, constantly evolving and changing. Hormone levels are peaking, both at the toddler age and the teenage years. Interestingly enough, the last part of the brain to develop is the part that deals with judgment and impulse control. This is why your teen may leap from laughter to tears, from joking to anger, all in a matter of seconds.

They should be forced to wear sandwich boards with warnings.

One other thing to bear in mind is that, while a toddler is familiar with his or her parent, a teenager knows you far better. They have time on their side. They have spent years with you and know just what makes you tick, as well as what buttons to push.

Humane Society of Davie County & Paws in the Park Helping Animals Along to Their Happy New Beginnings

PETERSON To see “Mowgli,” formerly named “Tennessee,” today in his forever home, his mom, Elizabeth, by his side, you’d never imagine his journey to his happy life or how your donations through events like the Humane Society of Davie County’s (HSDC) Paws in the Park help animals like Mowgli, every day.

A Sad Past, A Happy New Start…

There’s no way to know exactly what Mowgli’s life was like before he was found in an abandoned apartment by Officer Hurley of the Mocksville Police Department, but it couldn’t have been very good. “The landlord of an apartment complex called the Mocksville Police Department to report abandoned animals, a cat and dog. Officer Hurley believed the dog, skin and bones, had been there, alone, for over a month, living off of trash and toilet water. Tennessee and his cat friend were taken to Davie County Animal Control; the cat was adopted, and Animal Control asked HSDC to take Tennessee. Volunteers and staff members worked for over six months helping Tennessee gain weight, get healthy and work on his confidence and trust of others, which was hard to do. Along with working to socialize Tennessee, HSDC paid for his neuter, vaccinations, specialty food to help with his digestion problems, microchip, flea/tick and heartworm preventative for almost eight months,” said Carrie DuPre, HSDC Marketing Manager. Tennessee became a volunteer and staff favorite, giving and receiving love, but he needed to find his forever home. When Elizabeth came to visit HSDC, she and Tennessee, now named Mowgli, were a perfect match, but this happy ending wouldn’t have been possible without the donations to the HSDC through events like Paws in the Park.

Tanglewood Festival of Lights Brightens Up the Lives of Animals Since 2013, HSDC has sponsored Paws in the Park, for people to come with or without their fourlegged BFFs, enjoy a stroll through the magical land of lights in Tanglewood Park, sample delicious offerings from food trucks and do a little shopping, all to support HSDC’s adoption center.

“The funds raised from Paws in the Park keeps our adoption center running, funding the operating budget, allowing us to continue bringing in homeless pets, providing them with proper medical care and giving them a safe sanctuary until they, like Mowgli, start their happy new beginning. We can spend anywhere from $200 to $800 per animal, depending on how long they stay with us and what type of care they need before their adoption. We do not come close to recouping the entire amount spent on an animal through the adoption fee. Some animals come in and need spay/neuter, microchip and shots updated. Then there are the ones needing dental care, treatment for intestinal parasites, emergency bottle feeding, growths removed, mange or heartworm treatment, etc. We want to get these wonderful animals who need help the best veterinary care we can, and that costs money,” Carrie commented.

Paws in the Park has grown each year, with over 1,000 walkers, many with their pups by their side. “This year is our third Paws in the Park, and we hope to reach 1500 or more walkers.

Tanglewood Festival of Lights is a great way for people and their

dogs to come out and get in the holiday spirit, not only through the walk but with the great food and shopping we will have once again this year. Our volunteers will be located throughout the walk to help with any questions. This is one of the highlights of our organization each year,” stated Carrie.

HSDC’s biggest outreach is the Spay/Neuter Clinic, a monthly program that offers pet owners low-cost spay and neuter. “HSDC signs up the pets, and Planned Pethood of Greensboro sends a truck to pick up the animals for their surgery, returning them the following day. Spaying and neutering pets to prevent unwanted litters of dogs and cats is the only way to lower the homeless pet population in our state. It is our most important outreach, and Paws in the Park allows us to keep our building and clinic in

operation. Happy new beginnings like that of Mowgli and his mom, Elizabeth, is what motivates us each day to do what we do,” Carrie said.

The Creative Arts and Movement Classes

BY LISA S. T. DOSS Do you recall the first time you felt empowered when holding a crayon or colored pencil? That moment may have resulted in the desire to further experiment by manipulating a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors on paper. In a person of artistic sensibility, other forms of art are also recognized. Perhaps the appeal derives from the presentation of a plate of food, the arrangement of flowers, or in hearing the sound of musical notes blended together.

Whether your motivation is prompted by drawing or painting, dance or music, you are unknowingly strengthening the mind and body while learning how to relax, breathe, and focus for longer periods of time. Looking back, art education was simply the ability to create something unique from a blank canvas. The question is: “Why stop creating?”

DOODLERS ARE WELCOME The word “doodlers” has a negative connotation often associated with distraction or boredom. Did you know that people who doodle are more likely to retain information than if they were sitting and just listening? Doodlers are proven to be creative. One study proved that the skills of doodlers translate into remaining engaged, processing information, and the ability to communicate with ease. TIP: Promote an interest in architecture by photographing historical or unusual buildings, bridges, or even the symmetry of a tree. Children may love to delve into architecture and its history, mechanical drawing, or even consider learning about

pottery and quilting.

BALANCE AND TIMING The child who loves to bounce, roll, climb, and bravely jump into a pool of foam is, unknowingly, building levels of trust and confidence, displaying strength and control while learning about balance, breathing, and movement. He or she discovers freedom in connection with the movement of the body. She may love gymnastics and dance, and perhaps thrive in karate or synchronized swimming classes.

TIP: Instead of watching television for its programming, find a channel that plays a genre of music. Enjoy the evening hours inspired by bluegrass or show tunes, instrumental music or music from a specific period. The mere pleasure of listening to music, studies have shown, promotes feelings of happiness, boosts energy levels, and fosters creativity or the need to focus on one task.

Artistic expression expands one step farther on the question, “What if…?”

It delves into questions and theories, experimentation and results. It allows the individual to start over and begin anew.

The creative arts and the expression of movement can be practiced, studied, and used to reveal an unknown talent, or simply for the pleasure of making art.

Pressure on Children to Perform

BY ROBIN WHITE ELLIS What do we want for our children?

When asked this question, most parents would respond with, “happiness.” While that is true, sometimes our actions indicate that what we really want for our kids is nothing more or less than success.

This equates to succeeding in school, sports, activities, engaging people, communication, and in many other areas. The pressure on children today is heavy and, frankly, exhausting. In an era where the term “soccer mom” is the norm, parents have adopted a hypervigilance regarding their children’s academic, extracurricular, and social lives. While well-intentioned, this outlook and behavior can be damaging to both a growing body and a young mind.

There is a huge difference between parental encouragement and parental pressure. If pushed too strongly, a child is more likely to suffer from issues such as low confidence and self-esteem.

These negative emotions lead to withdrawal and sullenness, damaging the family structure and bond. We do not want our children questioning their own intelligence and talents. After all, they will face such constraints from others during 74 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

their growth and need to be secure in their parents’ support and good opinion. We need to show our kids that we are not just in their corner... we are also their biggest fans.

Parental pressure affects not only a child’s emotional well-being.

There are physical ramifications as well. Being pushed and hounded affects sleep and dampens mood, comprehension, and overall attitude.

A study from Arizona State University showed that children who faced relentless pressure from their parents to succeed were twice as likely to suffer from depression and anxiety as those who were pressured less.

When parents become obsessed or overly focused on high achievement, their relationship with their child suffers. While a parent may be that proverbial soccer mom or dad, chauffeuring hither and yon, attending practices, games, and recitals, they may not be spending actual quality time with their child.

Our children change and grow so quickly! It is imperative to put that time into truly knowing them... laugh with them, converse with them, exchange ideas and random thoughts with them. The pushpull relationship of pressuring and

receiving resistance can result in a coldness between the parent and child.

From the moment my daughter entered preschool, I was told that she was quite intelligent, but was a daydreamer. She had problems with focusing on the task at hand. She was in her own world, despite efforts to gain her attention. This continued through elementary school and farther, where she would receive awards such as “Most Creative,” yet often lost track of what she should be doing at the moment. I am thankful that we worked with her teachers to encourage her focus, instead of berating her constantly.

At seventeen, she is a talented artist, writer, and musician. If she had been subjected to constant pressure, would she have developed such a lovely spirit, or would we have crushed it instead?

Ultimately, we want to instill into our children a positive sense of selfworth. Without it, being pressured to succeed in an activity will cause the child to become defined by his or her ability to perform. We need to show them that we love them for who they are, not for what they can do.

A Letter to the Bullied Masses

School is all sorts of stressful.

Between endless assignments and exams, students have a lot to handle, not even counting sports.

It’s natural to want to turn to friends in times of stress. However, when friends are making school a taxing experience, it may be time to take a closer look at those friends and how they treat you. It’s normal for you all to tease one another, and even call each other names, but the line between bullying and banter is very finely danced. If being around your friends creates anxiety, it’s a strong possibility that you’re either being bullied or just now realizing that crowd of people is not for you.

Bullying isn’t always intentional.

Everyone says things they might not necessarily mean that offend another person. It’s when these offenses are repeated time and time again, breaking down a person’s self-esteem, that it quickly snowballs into bullying. In no time, silly banter can become torture. Make sure your friends are only lightheartedly teasing you, not intimidating and harassing you.

Some bullying, on the other hand, is very clearly intentional. It’s hard to understand why someone would want to harm another’s measure of self-worth and value, but there are actually very logical explanations for this torture. Often bullies channel their own personal problems and sources of stress to other people.

It feels natural to the bully, just like it would feel natural to you to be irritated after a bad day. Your irritation is picked up by others, and you might take out a little bit of that annoyance on those around you. The difference is, for a bully, everything is elevated. They not only show irritation, but they force those around them to feel it, too. Bullying creates an outlet for the stresses of life, which in no way is a justification, but does make the idea more comprehensible. It’s very simple. If a bully is powerless, he or she wants others to feel that way. If a bully struggles academically or socially, they want others to feel that same lack of confidence and fulfillment.

Whatever the case, it’s important that you know how to handle being

bullied. In a less serious bullying scenario, it might be easier to have a conversation with the person. It’s very possible that the individual doesn’t realize the effects their words have on you. Simply talking to this person about the diminishing feelings you are experiencing might be enough stop it. In a more serious bullying scenario, it may make more sense to talk to a trusted adult or organization. Dealing with an internal conflict like bullying can put a lot of stress on a person. It’s important you have someone to talk to during this difficult time that can offer some guidance. Above all, it’s important to remember that today, whatever moment and struggle you might be facing, is not the be-all, end-all. Life is so much bigger than this one bad week, month, year, or even these years. The time will always pass. Be the bigger person and keep going. Finish high school.

Go to college (if you wish). Travel.

Start a life with people that love and support you, and you’ll be the more powerful person.

Being a Good Sports Parent

We have all seen those parents who get a little too involved in their children’s competitions. The game begins with the spectators oohing and aahing over all of the adorable little ones trotting out in their uniforms, smiles adorning their sweet faces.

At some point, as the competition heats up, there is that one (or two or three or more) parental unit that begins to get a little redfaced. That flush of irritation escalates to grumbling and then to yelling. The verbiage may begin as encouragement, yet morphs to insults as the game clock marches on toward the inevitable meltdown, while the rest of us are left cringing in the stands.

This behavior has become a serious problem. On some level, the inner turmoil is understandable. Those are our babies out there, playing their little hearts out, and it hurts a parent deeply to see their failed attempts or bitter disappointments. While those feelings are legitimate and innate to us, how we react to them impacts our children greatly. To be honest, some of the reasons behind such poor sportsmanship are not as lofty. For example, some parents attempt to live their own childhoods vicariously through their progeny. Some look at the money and time involved in extracurricular activities as an investment for the future, assuming that success will lead to college scholarships or large payouts. Others have a winner-take-all mentality and feel that success for their son or daughter means success as a parent.

And then there are always the control freaks, who cannot allow a coach or referee to make decisions for even a game, when it involves their child.

Despite all of the causes leading to such attitudes, clearly, some parents are taking these games far too seriously. What lessons are our children learning when they see parents screaming insults

at coaches or umpires, verbally assaulting the other team, with horrified spectators recoiling in shock and their child cowering in mortification? How in the world can a child develop a healthy attitude toward competition in such a crazed situation? The simple answer is, that they can’t!

So, how can we all learn NOT to be that parent? First of all, invest some time on positive encouragement! There is no need to heckle or use abusive language. Cheer for the entire team. In fact, if the other team makes a fantastic play, acknowledge that, as well. It will show your young one that you recognize hard work and good play in everyone. What better way to exemplify positive sportsmanship than to recognize everyone involved?

Another helpful tip is to support the coach and team by attending meetings, learning the rules, and assisting when needed. Let the coach take the lead! There is no need to take over. If you disagree with something the coach has said or done, speak to him or her privately, in a respectful and friendly manner.

Do not undermine the coach by gossiping with the other parents or spectators.

Lastly, always keep in mind that your children will mirror your attitudes and behaviors! Never lose sight of the fact that your baby, no matter if he or she is five or fifteen, will notice and respond to your own actions. What we say and do in the high emotion of competition will be reflected back upon us by our kids. When it comes down to it, this is a game and should be enjoyed! Sometimes children learn more from losing...and they certainly will watch how you as an adult handle loss. Taking the fun out of the game also steals away the lessons you want your kids to learn.

In the book, Pastors are People Too, authors Jimmy Dodd and Larry Magnuson suggest that we, as churchgoers, each make a list of 20 expectations we have for our pastors. Your list might include things like: “He should deliver powerful and relevant sermons; he should be there if my family has a crisis; he should have a friendly and welcoming demeanor; his family should regularly participate in church activities,” and so on.

Once your list of 20 has been made, the authors say to multiply your 20 by the number of members of your church’s congregation, and you will have some sense of the immense pressure to please that your pastor faces every day.

If you find yourself disappointed because your pastor did not live up to your expectations in some way, #BeTheOne to offer grace and understanding, recognizing that your needs are just a few of the many that he is likely trying to meet.

Thanksgiving

BY CINDY KEIGER Let’s come into God’s presence with thanksgiving! Let’s shout out to him in celebration! ~ Psalm 95:2 This month we celebrate Thanksgiving in America. When you think of this special day, what comes to mind? Family and friends? Good food? Lots of dishes to wash? Trying to be good all day long?

The First Thanksgiving in our country was celebrated almost 400 years ago. The Pilgrims had harvested their first crops in the New World, and the Native Americans (who had taught them what would grow in this new place) also had a lot to be thankful for. They ate a meal together and gave thanks to God. The Bible tells us to give thanks for everything, so we know that being thankful isn’t only for Thanksgiving Day. People are already teaching you about giving thanks. How many times has Mom asked, “Did you say thank you?” When a friend helps you or gives you something, does somebody quietly remind you, “What do you say?” Maybe you’ve even written a thank-you note to someone.

Being thankful isn’t only in our words—it needs to be in our hearts, too. How do we get thankful hearts? Practice makes perfect. That means doing something over and over again until it becomes a habit.

It’s easy to be thankful for people or things that we like and that make us happy. List five things that always make you happy.

After you name those five people or things, say thanks for them.

Here are two examples: 1. Sunshine makes me happy. Thank you, God, for sunshine! 2. Grandpa makes me happy. Thanks, Grandpa, for taking me to the zoo!

How can we be thankful for sad or bad things that happen?

Again, it takes practice and looking at things in a different way. Name five things that make you sad or even angry. Now give thanks for them. This is hard, so maybe Mom or Dad can give you some ideas. Here are two examples: 1. I’m sad my teacher didn’t give me a gold star on my workbook page. Lord, thank you for helping me do my best. I’ll try to get a sticker next week. 2. I fell down and skinned my knee, and that made me cry. I’m thankful that it only bled a little and it’s already feeling better.

We have a lot to be thankful for every day, and this month we are especially thankful for Thanksgiving Day! Give a shout-out to God! Thank you, Lord!

“It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night.” ~ Psalm 92:1-2 I’m going to be transparent here and admit that I don’t love Thanksgiving. In fact, I’m a bit of a Thanksgiving Grinch.

It’s a ton of work and stress and to make matters worse, I don’t even like turkey that much. Since I don’t have a great attitude about this holiday, there have been a few years where, I’m embarrassed to say, I have been anything BUT thankful on Thanksgiving.

A few years ago, after a particularly stressful Thanksgiving day, I drifted off to sleep feeling guilty about my lack of thankfulness. I asked God to forgive my poor attitude and to help me be more appreciative of my many blessings.

The next day, as I was organizing the house, I asked the kids to round up every pair of shoes they could find, so that I could sort through them and get rid of the ones that were too small or too worn-out to wear. After almost half an hour of looking in closets, toy bins, under beds and among several laundry piles, my kids announced that they had collected all of the shoes, matched up the pairs they could find, and put them on the floor in the living room.

When I walked into the room to inspect their work, I could not believe my eyes.

There on the floor were row after row of shoes, somewhere around 35 pairs.

Immediately, my mind flashed to the kids I had met in Guatemala whose shoes were clearly way too small and full of holes. I remembered hearing about the kids in Africa who walk around on painfully injured or infected feet, because they have no shoes at all.

At that moment, my heart remembered just how much I really do have to be thankful for. It was like God had put together an object lesson right there for me on my living room floor.

The truth is, no matter how bad we may think we have it, we all have plenty to be thankful for. Sometimes, we just need God to point out for us the many ways he has blessed our lives, so that our hearts can once again be filled with praise and thanksgiving.

Mom’s hoot-owl cookies were an annual fall staple in the Bingham House growing up. We made them every year, like clockwork, when the temperatures dropped and the daylight hours faded.

After mixing the dough, but before baking the cookies, there was one crucial step of creation. We carefully selected two M&M chocolate candies and a cashew to become the eyes and beak, animating facial features onto the dough. This was my favorite part: choosing eyes, green, brown, blue, even sometimes yellow, and gently pressing the colored candies on to transform a sweet treat into a friendly, hoot-owl face. For me, there was something in the eyes.

Matthew 25 has a discourse on the Kingdom of God. In it, the gospel writer speaks of a day when the Lord will hold accountable all of us who have, or have not, shown sincere compassion for our neighbors; all of us who have, or have not, made a lifestyle practice of social justice and mercy. It’s interesting how both the merciful and the unmerciful responded to the Lord by using the language of sight, and seeing: “Lord, when was it that we saw you…” hungry, thirsty, a stranger in need of welcome, without clothes, sick or in prison? There must be something in the eyes.

Do me a favor in the next four weeks: look around on Sunday morning and make a note of what you see and, in particular, whom you see. Especially in worship—if you are a committed Christfollower—look around and take note of whom you see, and ask the question, “Whom do I not see?” Who are God’s children not represented in our worshiping community? Can you see who is missing? Do you notice who is not there? Do we intentionally, or unintentionally, exclude these children—precious in God’s sight—

because they do not fit a majority demographic of race, gender, socioeconomic status, age?

This week, I’ve been reading Father Gregory Boyle’s Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion. I was intrigued by his challenge: “Close both eyes, see with the other one.

Then we are no longer saddled with the burden of our persistent judgments, our ceaseless withholding, our constant exclusion. Our sphere has widened, and we find ourselves quite unexpectedly in a new expansive location, in a place of endless acceptance and infinite love.”

Oh, that we could see with Christ’s eyes!

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is credited with naming 11 am Sunday morning the most segregated hour in America. I can’t prove this is true, but in my experience, I’ve never witnessed anything different. In fact, from my experience, it seems to go deeper than even racial segregation, with division lines drawn by socioeconomic status, gender identity, and proclivity to unwritten social, moral and ethical codes. This should not be.

I wonder, do we even see it? Do we see the ways we segregate rather than welcome and embrace for the sake of Jesus the Christ?

Or will we, too, stand in front of the Lord one day and respond, “Lord, when did we see you?”

On the Sunny Side of Life, may we have merciful eyes to see those too often ignored or forgotten and may we with relentless compassion welcome those marginalized, displaced, and discriminated against.

It is a beautiful moment when we witness the children of God place their hands together in prayer, close their eyes, exhale, and be still for those well-needed solemn moments. It is a relief to know today’s youth can still find peace in sharing their intimate words and feelings with God. As adults, we never truly let go of a yearning to pray together as a family. While it has the propensity to bond us together, it also fulfills the need for a feeling of belonging and greater purpose. It is important that children watch as our hands come together, and listen as the confident words of thankfulness, appreciation, and the blessing of others are spoken out loud. Of course, they are listening to the presentation and wording. In this season of Thanksgiving, we can help our children continue to feel comfortable in their own words and expressions.

It is similar to a conversation with our best friend, who provides both support and help. Is a comfort to voice silently or openly words of thankfulness and gratitude, a request for someone else, or a need for guidance. Families who come together can aid with support and understanding, and work together by talking through problems.

• On an index card, write the name of someone special, or attach a photo. Each day choose one card to lift a name in prayer.

• Hand prayers are an interesting way to combine creativity and prayer. After drawing your hand, use each digit to emphasize praise, thankfulness, and/or a request for help.

Young children have an innate creativity and spirituality, which enables them to live in a state of greater connectedness to God than many adults. (A good bit of adult spirituality is spent trying to get back to that state of wonder, love, and joy.) So when it comes to family and prayer, everyone—young and old alike—has something to teach and something to learn, an important reminder of how God works through us all.”

Just Be and Let Be

BY HEATHER MILLER with Triad Moms on Main I have three amazing daughters. When people find this out, there are a handful of comments that are usually thrown my way. “All girls?!?!” “I bet their dad feels so outnumbered!” “Will you try again for a boy?” “You’re brave!” I find all of these comments to be odd, because when I think about having three girls, I think how lucky I am. My third child was not an attempt at a son, as shocking as that may be. There is not much that fills me with joy the way that raising strong women does. It is curious to me that there is rarely a comment that is geared towards how happy I must be.

My first-born is a cautious soul. She buries herself in books and arts and crafts. She is a kind heart and her brain is nothing short of a sponge. She is also a leader and loves to be in charge. She is not bossy, she is assertive, and it will take her to the moon and back one day. No, I don’t think she likes to “tell her sisters what to do,” I think she knows what she wants and how she wants things done and will use her brain to get it her way. While she has no interest in team sports, it does not mean that she is not a team player, it means she has other interests. This is the child that took six months to even smile back at me after she was born. She has a lot going on in that wonderful brain of hers, back off.

My second child loves life to the fullest. She will jump from telling you all about dinosaurs to watching Cinderella in 10 seconds. She has a dinosaur bedspread, sleeps with a stuffed wolf, thinks Super Heroes are the coolest thing ever, and has a Frozen poster on her wall. She is not the son I never had. She is the amazing daughter that I do have. She likes things. All things. She is a person who likes things, not a “tom-boy.” When asked what I would do if she

came to me and said she is a boy, I smile and say loud and proud that I would do nothing, because it isn’t possible for me to love her any more. So shove your labels up your…oops, sorry, this is a family website. You get my drift.

My third is nothing short of a tornado. She runs into a room and leaves, making you wonder what in the hell just happened. She is the baby, and is treated as such. She has more love in her toes than most people do in their whole bodies. Yes, she throws fits, and no, she is not like her sisters. I would not want her to be.

She isn’t her sisters; she is her own perfect person. She wears Crocs with all outfits, hats that never match her outfits, and is usually sporting a stamp or seven on her arms. Her hair is always in her face and she hates hair ties. I could make her conform, and maybe that would make everyone else happy. Seems to me, though, that she is already happy, so I have done my job.

With all that is going on in the crazy, wild world of ours, let’s do each other all a favor and keep our labels to ourselves. There are many reasons for the number of children that we each end up with; rather than comment on the reason, let us comment on the joy. See someone with three of the same sex? Wow! She is so lucky that she gets to re-use all of those baby clothes so many times! See someone with one child? How lucky is that kid to not have to share! Imagine if we all just let each other be, just a little more. Wouldn’t that teach our kids to let each other be, just a little more? Maybe that is what will end up making this world a better place.

A small “elephant nose,” or nasal hood, is placed over the child’s nose with their preferred smell (cotton candy is always a favorite), and they are encouraged to breathe through their nose.

• Conscious Sedation may be used, depending on the complexity of the treatment. The child is typically given medication to drink to help make her drowsy, but it does not put her to sleep.

• General Anesthesia is not used lightly and should take into consideration a child’s age, anxiety level, extensive treatment needs and emotional well-being. A licensed anesthesiologist must administer general anesthesia and be present throughout the procedure.

If your child requires some dental attention that may be a bit lengthy, or if she is worried about the procedure, don’t hesitate to ask your provider about all the options available to determine what is best for the situation.

In Tune with Music and Life

From the local stage of the Salem Fine Arts Center to the slightly more storied stage of New York City’s Carnegie Hall, the enthusiastic members of the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus are shining stars with bright futures.

With nearly 100 members among four ensembles, these young singers—ages eight to 18—represent over 40 schools in Forsyth and nearby counties. They also represent true diversity and a true love of being part of something larger than themselves; and besides music, they are learning teamwork, tolerance, and how to care for lasting friendships. Parents of chorus members notice immediately that their sons and daughters are being enriched musically, socially, and intellectually.

Since its founding in 1993 by Artistic Director Barbara C. Beattie, the WSYC has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of young people through both music education and the magical experience of musical performance. When Beattie retired in 2015, she left the chorus in the soulful hands of Dr. Sonja Sepulveda, who has continued to broaden the scope of what these young voices can achieve.

Following a standard audition, those accepted learn a wide range of proper vocal techniques and music theory, along with performance and sight-singing skills. They are introduced to the many elements of music culture and explore songs in other languages as well, while bonding and frequently collaborating with other local and regional arts groups, including the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, The Cantata Singers, The Winston-Salem Symphony, The Piedmont Wind Symphony, The Piedmont Opera, The Piedmont Chamber Singers, the Salem College Choirs and The Winston-Salem State University Choir.

It’s not surprising that when the mayor of Winton-Salem endorsed the WSYC in 2015 as the Premier Youth Chorus for the City, they were also dubbed Ambassadors of Good Will. Earlier this year, the group participated in the Vienna Choral Music Festival in Vienna, Austria, sharing their love for music—and their fellow singers—on a world stage.

“Talent is everywhere,” says Dr. Sepulveda. “The saddest thing to me is when that talent goes undiscovered and undeveloped. I hope the WSYC reaches children who never thought such an opportunity existed for them.”

FAMILY ROLES IN TRANSITION:

Caring for Our Aging Parents

If you are adults in your 40s and 50s, raising a family while caring for your aging parents, you are a proud member of the “Sandwich Generation.” It sounds like we are packing a bag lunch, doesn’t it? I wish it were that simple. The truth is, due to our increasing longevity, this is a new phenomenon. One that is as emotionally charged as it is complicated. The good news is, we are not alone.

“Today, 30 million households are providing care for an adult over the age of 50—and that number is expected to double over the next 25 years,” according to the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons). We knew we needed to plan for childcare and college, but now we are also going to need a plan for caring for our parents. This is a little more complex. Where do we start?

In 2010, we realized my Dad’s health was on the decline. There were a lot of decisions to be made. It was overwhelming, to say the least. Unfortunately, most of us don’t see it coming, so we end up making decisions while in crisis management mode. In hindsight, I wish we had planned ahead. Recently, I discovered an invaluable tool developed by AARP that is genius!! It can be found on their website (AARP.org) and is called A Planning Guide for Families: Prepare to Care.

Getting started is the hardest part. Gather all family members, including, and most importantly, your parents. Talk about their goals, concerns and plans. Parents have a pretty good idea of what’s best for them. Think about your family’s “cast of characters,” and decide ahead of time who is best equipped to moderate this discussion. Bear in mind that some of this is uncomfortable and will need to be handled with care. Be prepared for a little resistance. It’s only natural that they will feel self-conscious as you discuss their future—medically, financially, residentially and regarding end-of-life choices. The next step is to form your “team.”

And trust me, you are going to want one.

Sure, it may seem easier to avoid calling in the troops, but you will be overburdened.

And in the long run, that isn’t healthy for anyone.

Statistically, the eldest daughter is most likely to be chosen as the caregiver. Wait!? That’s me! It could be you, too—or maybe you are an only child, or you live out of town, but your siblings live nearby… The point is that there will be a great many tasks that need to be done, in person and by way of emotional and financial support, so there’s something for everyone.

Do not go it alone!

maintenance and living situation, financial affairs, transportation needs, personal needs, healthcare, communication and adaptive devices (also included in the Planning and Care Guide). Ideally, your parents will help with this. Make sure to communicate that your intention is to help them, not to take control. Our parents are unaccustomed to being helped; “helping” others was their role. A “role reversal” may cause unease, and this project will take some time. If it begins to cause stress, try this: plant the seed, wait a little while, then bring it up later. Nothing good comes from making others feel defensive. With a little patience, in time these seeds will produce sweeter fruits.

Be aware also that there are a great many agencies and resources that help with the care and health maintenance of our folks.

Be patient with them; but mostly, be patient with yourself. Make plans when you can, and it will all be okay. With access to support and resources, you won’t have to blaze this trail alone.

PILOT MOUNTAIN Christmas’ 50th and Final Year

BY MEGHAN E.W. CORBETT There are so many amazing activities, festivals and parties this time of year, it is impossible to make them all. The rush of the holidays is gone in a flash, but this year, we should all make a special effort to attend the finale of one of the greatest holiday traditions around—Pilot Mountain Christmas.

For the 50th and final year, owners Larry and Rachel Charpiat will bring the joy of the season to thousands of local residents and visitors through Pilot Mountain Christmas. “Larry’s family moved from Jacksonville, Florida to Hollywood, Florida in 1966,” related Rachel. “Larry started very small at his parents’ home in 1966, when he was 19 years old. His parents had taken him around to view decorated houses in Jacksonville when he was young, and he really liked seeing the home Christmas displays. When his family moved to Hollywood, the Hollywood Florida Jaycees had a home Christmas lighting contest. Each year, the same house won first place in the contest. The house that won hired professional Christmas lighting decorators to decorate their home, and Larry did not think that it was right for them to enter a home- lighting contest and win. So, Larry set out to beat them out of first place. It took Larry four years to win, and the next year, the house that always won the contest quit decorating. During those four years, Larry saw how much joy and happiness the Christmas display brought to children and adults, and the tradition and yearly Christmas display was started.”

That first year, Larry had around 1,000 lights. Pilot Mountain Christmas now boasts nearly one million lights. “Most of the time, it is just the two of us putting it up and taking it down,” explained Rachel. “We work on it all year, doing repairs and getting ready for the next year. It’s just gotten too big for us. We have family, friends and volunteers helping with traffic and serving hot chocolate on the weekends. Now, we are both in our 70s, so after 50 years, we thought this would be the right time to hang it up.”

Though Larry has been working on his lights for 50 years, Pilot Mountain Christmas has only been in operation for 12 years, since the Charpiats moved to North Carolina. “Pilot Mountain is a place you can bring your family and learn what Christmas is all about and make beautiful memories,” said Rachel. “You can park in our one-acre parking lot (we can park around 200 cars) get your free hot chocolate and walk through our winter wonderland. Santa Claus will be here every Friday and Saturday. We will post times on our website (www.pilotmountainchristmas.com).

Everything is FREE, so come out, bring the family and have a wonderful time.”

To celebrate 50 years, Larry and Rachel ask those who attend to stop by the gazebo to sign the guest book and look at the memory board of the past 50 years. In pure Charpiat fashion, there will be something new and exciting this year, as in years past! “We have lots of surprises for this year that we are working on,” said Rachel. “We are expecting a large crowd—more than usual this year. We had about 25,000 guests sign our guest book in 2015, and we think it will be more this year. The weekends are more crowded, so please try and carpool on the weekends. We can accommodate large groups through the week, so please NO buses on the weekends.”

Laura C. Rodriguez-Perez is a POK teacher who teaches bilingual kindergarten at Old Town Elementary. She was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and she loves to dance! “I have always had a strong passion for children and education, which motivated me to complete a degree in Elementary Education from the University of Puerto Rico. After graduating, I moved to the United States, looking for academic growth. After I earned my Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from Binghamton University in New York, my plan was to go back home.

However, I chose to stay because of the opportunity to work with, and support, the Latino community.

Being far from home and my family is very hard, and there are times when I question myself as to why I am still here, and the answer is “mis águilas.” Working at Old Town supporting the Hispanic community, I truly believe I found my vocation. I believe that learning must be meaningful, engaging, and fun. I strongly believe that much learning takes place when children play and can express themselves in a safe and nurturing environment. For the last four years, I have had the opportunity to learn from amazing colleagues, to know stories of self-improvement and sacrifice from our families, and to work with my kids. I love to walk into my classroom and see their faces full of energy, love and that amazing desire for learning. I know Old Town is just part of my journey, and one day I will go back home. I hope to impact the Puerto Rican students the way North Carolina and Old Town have impacted me.”

Lisa Nakawatase is a social studies teacher at Forsyth Middle College. She has been teaching for 14 years, and she also teaches in the FACE program in the evening. She cites her father, who was born in a Japanese interment camp during World War II, as her inspiration for becoming a teacher. “My students inspire me and keep me motivated every day. I work endlessly to make education and lessons relevant to today’s world. I know that I must make connections that are current to world events to keep kids engaged. I love working with juniors and seniors, because I can assist them with postsecondary choices and help them develop insight as to what they want to do after high school. I genuinely care for and love my students, and strive for them to know this each and every day, and I feel confident they do. I am a teacher, so I can bring excitement to learning. I am a teacher, because I change lives and make them better. I teach, because the joy I receive cannot be measured in monetary value. I teach, because I love kids and want to produce educated adults in our society. I am inspired by their willingness to learn. I am inspired, because I see remarkable student performances in the classroom daily. I am inspired, because my students love me as much as I love them.”

Theresa Bryant is an English teacher at West Forsyth High School. She is a first-generation teacher from New York who serves as a Goodwill Ambassador to Aruba. She shares, “I am a teacher because it is in my blood. Even as a young child, I knew I wanted to teach. After teaching for fifteen years, I realize that I do not just feel the desire to teach, but also the desire to learn. I enjoy learning more about my curriculum, about my community, and about the changing world around me. These things inspire me and keep my passion alive. To keep myself motivated, I participate in my students’ learning by being an animated teacher that uses “silly voices,” draws horrible stick figures, sings, and acts out parts of the story to help with their comprehension.

Self-evaluation is just as important as any form of assessment in my classroom. Through this process, I learn how to change my instruction for each class and each student. Knowing that I have helped the students in my class and at West improve academically is the best reward I could imagine. My belief is that all students can be taught, and sometimes the opportunity does not always present itself in the classroom.”

YOUNG ADULTS: Introducing Your “BAE” to Your Parents

bae [bey] Slang noun 1. an affectionate term used to address or refer to one’s girlfriend,boyfriend, spouse, etc.: I love you, bae. adjective, baeer, baeest.

2. greatly admired or loved.

3. very cool; great.

You found someone special, and you want to introduce him or her to your parents.

That’s a big deal, congratulations! It’s true what they say, “You only get one chance to make a good first impression.” Good or bad, a first impression can last a lifetime.

It’s important, so you’re going to want to do this right. These suggestions were made by teens, their siblings, and parents.

It sounds simple enough—in arranging the introduction, you should consider four things: Location, duration, presentation and conversation.

Location: Invite them to a family event, like a picnic or birthday party. That’s nice, but consider this: if you have a large family or get-together, it may be overwhelming to your date. A dinner at their home is smaller and more intimate. For a more relaxed meeting, consider choosing somewhere neutral, like a coffee shop or ballgame.

Duration: First meetings are a way of breaking the ice. Keep it short and sweet. If you meet for dessert, coffee or a ballgame, the risk of uncomfortable silences or awkward answers is minimal.

Have an exit strategy, so that you can gracefully depart while everything is going well.

Presentation: How your date looks and behaves can paint a vivid picture before they even have a chance to speak.

Consider these suggestions and prepare him or her before your introduction.

• Don’t wear anything too revealing or shocking (including facial piercings); this will distract them from getting to know “you.”

with his/her father and compliment his or her mother.

• Do suggest [to BAE] bringing a hostess gift if you are taking him or her “home.”

• Don’t text, talk, Instagram, or Snapchat while visiting with the parents, and never at the table.

• Do use respectful language; be articulate; watch your grammar and tone.

• Do maintain a respectful distance, do not invade their personal space.

• Don’t curse, use slang or urban dictionary terminology.

• Do offer to help clean up after the meal.

• Don’t criticize your family or theirs.

• Do make friendly conversation with younger (or older) siblings.

• Do be charming and share a little bit about yourself.

• Don’t display too much affection in front of the parents = awkward.

• Don’t talk about your significant other to his or her parents as if you know them best.

Conversation: By far, this is the most important and telling indicator for whether or not your parents will approve of your BAE. There was no shortage of horror stories from the people I interviewed. Here are some of their Do’s and Don’ts: • Don’t talk about politics, religion, sex, or social injustices.

• Don’t talk over or for your date.

Especially if you are meeting THEIR parents.

• Don’t drink too much, it shows, it always shows.

• Do be genuine and authentic.

• Don’t be “fake nice” or “try too hard”; this makes everyone uncomfortable, suspicious.

• Do participate in discussions and

• Do make eye contact while conversing; it’s a sign of respect.

• Do try everything her parents serve, and never coach the cook.

The best defense is a good offense. By that I mean any preparation and coaching you can give your BAE before the meeting is going to be golden. Tell him or her a little bit about your parents’ interests, as well as topics that are good and topics to avoid. Do the same for your folks.

If a meal is being prepared, be sure to inform the cook of any food restrictions or sensitivities. The whole idea is to set up a meeting where everyone is as comfortable as possible. You know your people, and you also know if they get along, it will make your life so much better (and easier).

CRANBERRY CRESCENT ROLLS 1 package crescent dinner rolls 1 14-oz. can cranberry jelly sauce DIRECTIONS:

PUMPKIN DIP WITH GINGERSNAPS 1-15 oz. can puréed pumpkin 1Tbsp cinnamon

CROCKPOT CRANBERRY APPLE CIDER 1 liter Apple juice, unsweetened 1 liter cranberry juice

1. Separate crescent dough along perforated lines according to directions.

2 cups powdered sugar

2. Place a spoonful of cranberry sauce along the wide end of the triangle of dough.

1 8-oz. package cream cheese

Ginger snaps

½ cup sugar

3. Roll them up wide end to small end and bake according to package directions.

Serve warm as appetizers or as a side.

1 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice

DIRECTIONS: 1. In a medium bowl, blend cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth.

2. Stir in the pumpkin gradually.

3. Stir in the cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice until smooth.

The 5th-Annual Arts For Life

“Roll & Stroll”

BY MEGHAN E.W. CORBETT On November 17th, the fifth-Annual “Roll & Stroll,” presented by the Clemmons Community Foundation, will take place at Tanglewood Park. As the main fundraiser for the local nonprofit, Arts For Life, Roll & Stroll continues to support the work being done at Brenner Children’s Hospital.

“We’re proud to partner with Brenner Children’s Hospital, by providing topnotch educational art activities— seven days a week—for more than 4,000 patients and family members each year,” said Rachel Zink, Executive Director of Arts For Life. “Arts For Life helps kids in the hospital remember that they’re not just patients; they’re artists, musicians and poets, too. The purpose of the Roll & Stroll is to share the Arts For Life story and support pediatric patients and families within our Triad community. The Roll & Stroll is unique, because it’s the night before the Festival of Lights opens to the public for car traffic, so it’s a special ‘sneak preview’ of this year’s awe-inspiring light displays.”

There are many exciting features at the Roll & Stroll each year, and this year is no different! “Arrive at the park between 5–6pm for a food-truck supper, live entertainment, art activities and visits with Santa & Mrs. Claus,” related Zink. “From 6:30–7pm, bicyclists will enjoy the route to themselves for a community group ride around the park (ROLL), and then at 7 pm, the crowd will STROLL its way through the Festival of Lights: by foot, wagon, stroller, or training wheels.

It’s a two-mile loop around the park, filled with spectacular lights, music and merriment.

In just five years, Roll & Stroll has really grown with help from the community. “We started in 2012, when a couple hundred people joined us to help raise $6,000,” Zink stated. “Last year, more than 1,200 members of the Triad community attended and raised more than $24,000 to help bring the arts to young patients and families at Brenner Children’s Hospital. I’ve been involved in the planning since 2013, and it’s been so inspiring to see the event grow every year. Our community has really embraced the Roll & Stroll as a holiday tradition—a way to kick off the season in a fun and festive way while helping children in need. Our goal is to throw the best, most festive holiday kickoff celebration the Triad’s ever seen! We aim to raise at least $35,000 with help from our guests, and we’re planning for a crowd of 1,000 of our friends and supporters. We are so grateful for this year’s generous sponsors: Clemmons Community Foundation; Truliant Federal Credit Union; Modern Automotive; Twin City Kiwanis Club; Garanco, Inc.; Mast General Store; and Clemmons Bicycle. 100% of proceeds from the Roll & Stroll will go directly to putting the healing power of art into the hands of kids who need it most.”

We also have volunteer opportunities for people who are interested in teaching art, music, or poetry to kids in the hospital.”

It hurts my heart when I hear someone say, “I don’t like to read.” Reading is a skill that should be embraced and nurtured; it is truly a gift to be able to look at letters, identify how their arrangement creates patterns for words, and interpret their meaning while simultaneously drawing enjoyment from the tale. I have been reading since I was three years old. While some seasons of my life involve more opportunities for reading, there are still titles from my youth that draw me in. At 41, here are a few stories I still enjoy, and with all my heart, I believe every child should have the opportunity to enjoy these classics.

GOODNIGHT MOON

Hiking the Appalachian Trail with Christian Monroe

Christian Monroe spent the summer between his sophomore and junior years of college a bit differently than most students. Rather than pick up a part-time job or enjoy a few weeks at the beach, Monroe embarked on a 2,200-mile journey on the Appalachian Trail—alone.

Monroe, now a junior at Western Carolina University, has been a lifelong lover of the outdoors. Through the boy scouts growing up, Monroe developed a love for hiking and knew from the first time he heard about the Appalachian Trail that he wanted to do it himself. “I really love hiking and being outside and challenging myself,” Monroe said. “This summer I just decided that I was going to do it. It was a pretty big decision.” On the decision to travel alone, Monroe said simply, “If I fail, it won’t be because of somebody else.”

Monroe entered the trail May 1st with just one goal: finish before school began in August. Averaging about 30 miles per day during the trail’s first 600 miles, Monroe said he stopped every four or five days to spend the night in a hostel and restock on supplies. The hostels provided a nice break from the wilderness and allowed Monroe to reflect a bit on the progress he was making.

“Every so often there would be a hostel with a map on the wall, and you could just see how far you’ve gone,” he said “At first you look at it, and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve only gone like an inch-and-a-half,’ but at the end, you’re right at the top, and you’re like, ‘I’m so close.’ It was really, really cool.”

Monroe’s trip lasted just 99 days, including a six-day break from the trail for his sister’s wedding. For most hikers, casual and competitive, the trail can take six months or more.

The secret to his stamina?

“I ate a lot of Oreos and peanut butter for the sugar and calories,” Monroe explained, adding that Nutella and Jiff brand peanut butter provided his body with the necessary sodium to maintain energy. “And candy at the end of the night, just because it’s really good.”

Throughout his trip, Monroe’s encounters with fellow hikers were usually limited to the time it took him to pass them. But getting to know people on the trail, he remarked, was always interesting. “Usually everyone is really friendly. Most everyone will talk to you because you’re out there struggling together,” he explained. “I liked to see where conversations would go just from getting to know people. Usually, you would hit on something that you knew would be an interesting thing to ask them about and then you could go from there.”

The trail, which spans 14 states from Georgia to Maine also offered Monroe a chance to see parts of the country he had never visited before. Everything north of Virginia, he said, was new territory. “Crossing state lines was always really cool to me because you just start thinking about how far you’ve gone, he added.

And to keep him motivated throughout, Monroe has one piece of advice in mind. “[The advice] is to tell everyone you know that you’re doing it,” he said. “Tell everybody, so that way if you don’t finish it, you have to tell them that you didn’t finish it. That’s a hard thing to do, to go home, and they ask, ‘Oh, how was the trip?’ and you say, ‘Oh, well, I didn’t finish.’”

Monroe did finish—with 12 days to spare—and the trip has spurred ideas for future trips, including the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from the U.S. border of Mexico to British Columbia, Canada. “It was awesome,” he declared. “I want to hike a whole lot more, that’s for sure.

Even at the end when I finished, it was like, ‘Wow, it’s over already?’”

Emergency kits might inspire fear at the first mention of their name, but they aren’t necessarily tied to instances of disaster. Thanks to handy sites like Pinterest and Etsy, there’s inspiration for ways to create kits for both real emergencies, and for those little emergencies that life throws at us daily. This column will explore ideas of items that could be essential for various types of emergency kits, so that you can be inspired and start your own. This month, we’ll put together a kit that’s great for moving day or for a housewarming gift.

As always, we want to make sure to put our kit into a container that will serve a purpose other than just holding your fabulous kit. For this kit, consider a bucket that might be handy for repairs or the move itself—or, if the move has already happened, you can use a nice mixing bowl.

Every home could always use a few more of these. A surge protector provides all those extra plug-ins you need in our electric world while also providing safety to all of your devices. You can keep this inexpensive and grab a protector from a nearby dollar store, or you can invest more and get one with rotating plugs, color-coding options, and more.

Every new home is going to need some new décor to warm it up. Toss in a hanging kit so that your kit recipient can hang to their heart’s desire.

These kits can be found easily and inexpensively at local dollar stores.

We never realize how much junk we have, until it’s time to move and pack it all up. During a move, there’s an endless array of trash that’s going to accrue.

Toss in a bag of heavy duty, flexible garbage bags so your recipient doesn’t have to make a late night trip out to the store when they’re unpacking all of those boxes.

Once your kit recipient gets all of their furniture into their space, they’re probably going to want to move it around until they find that perfect organization. Toss in a pack of surface protectors, so they can scoot their furniture as much as they need without putting any marks or tears in their carpet, or scratches on their hardwood floors.

If the new home is a rental or if your kit recipient tends to change his or her aesthetic often, then include a pack or two of various Command strips. Command makes a huge variety of hooks, strips, grippers, decorative hangers and even Command Velcro. If you’re not sure what-all they need, a good selection of plain strips or Velcro and a pack of wire-hanging strips for picture hanging are always useful.

This item won’t necessarily make the move particularly easy, but it will add to the ambiance and relaxation following all of the hard work from the move. Grab their favorite scent, or if you’re not sure what that scent is, then find something that has a fresh, but relaxing, scent like lavender, eucalyptus or mint.

Stories from Grandma

Some of my best memories involve sitting near my grandmother and listening to her stories. Nobody will ever or could ever tell a story like her! Some of my favorites were so amusing mainly due to her delightful laughter. Grandma sometimes laughs so hard that she can barely finish her tale, which I absolutely adore! One of these narratives stands out in my mind for that very reason. I have heard it countless times, and it never gets old. When my grandmother was a child, her family had prayer meetings in the home. The neighborhood folks would come over and have their spirits set aflame by the Lord, praising and praying. At the end of the meeting, the preacher stepped out back to the outhouse.

Unfortunately for him, it was dark outside, and the young boys had not felt the Lord so much as the devil’s temptation. They had moved the outhouse back several feet, leaving the inevitable hole in the ground filled with...well, you can imagine...directly in the path to the outhouse’s new location. The preacher went straight down into that hole and became covered with...well, again, you know...and was not a happy man of the cloth, spitting curses over his predicament. Grandma always says, “He went in a Christian and came out a sinner!”

I have started writing down all of the stories Grandma tells me, because I want my daughter and my future grandchildren to hear them. Grandparents are a living bridge between the past and the future. They are literally the living embodiment of your family’s stories and histories. When we hear these tales, we learn whence 112 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

we come. Grandma opens my eyes to a different way of living... when times were more difficult and triumphs harder fought. She has given me heroes and heroines to mold myself after, and the best part of that is that they are a part of me, as my own family. These people and past situations were the creation of the soul of our family. Sometimes the cast of characters is exciting, unnerving, heroic, fallen, amusing, happy, and sad. It is good to know of those who came before, as they provided us with the lives we live today.

I adore hearing of my grandparents’ courtship and early marriage.

There is truth to the saying “all because two people fell in love.”

Due to that love, they had three dynamic daughters who went on to give them four loving grandchildren, who found their own mates, and so far have borne a great-granddaughter and (soon to be) great-grandson. As more generations appear and flourish, I want Grandma’s stories to live on and be the dreams of fireside tales and holiday remembrances. Grandma taught me along the way the kind of person I want to be, to mimic her lively nature and caring heart. When I fall or fail, I never have any doubt of her unconditional love and support, the heart of which was revealed to me as a little girl, sitting on Grandma’s knee.

Relish your own family stories. They become a tapestry of history and love that weaves you closer to those you love, giving you both roots and wings. Grandmas hold our tiny hands for just a little while, but our hearts forever.

Boys vs. That Villain Organization

BY KORI MACKALL, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, THE PIEDMONT SCHOOL If you ask most boys, regardless of school grade, to look in their backpack for a school paper or homework assignment, more times than not there is a mom cringing in the background, thinking to herself, “There is no telling what you will find in there!” Underneath the food wrappers, stinky gym clothes, or miscellaneous “treasures” found during recess, you might get lucky and find the crinkled homework paper you are looking for. Life with boys is a never-ending world of excitement and management of chaos. Trends in research show that many boys who are bright students begin to struggle in school settings as early as the primary grades, but even more so in middle and high school years. The truth is, many of our schools are not built for boys, or how they best learn. Down to their core, boys are active humans who strive toward movement and “doing,” versus sitting, listening, and remembering.

With schools back in session, some of you may be noticing your boys beginning to struggle. This is not to say that our daughters do not struggle at times, but we tend to see a different type of struggle for boys. One of the greatest pieces of kryptonite for boys is the villainous task of organization. This is often a source of major struggle for boys in an academic setting. As the academic rigor increases throughout the schooling career, the requirements for independent organization and accountability greatly increase.

But who is teaching our boys about organization? What class has time to break down organizational techniques for boys to be successful? Unfortunately, most do not.

• The binders are often large enough to put in pocket folders and divide areas by subject, so all subject areas can be in the same place.

DAILY AGENDAS: • Daily agendas that can be kept in the three rings of the zipper binder can help boys keep a daily record of assignments, projects, or other “to-dos.”

• Boys often struggle with long-term planning, so having a daily agenda to break down their assignments or to help lay out a plan for long-term projects gives them something concrete to rely on. For the technologically savvy (or cell-phone addicted), cell phone calendars and reminders can also be a great tool. (*Recommendation: use the alarm function to set reminders for things that need to be done each day.)

• Use daily agendas or calendars also to keep track of what does not have to be completed. For example, if there is no algebra homework one night, write down, “No Homework” in the agenda to help keep track of what does, and does not, have to be done each day.

TECHNOLOGY: • If your school uses mass-communication systems like “Remind” or “Powerschool,” use them yourself!

With this in mind, here are some great strategies and tools for parents to help their boys stay organized and accountable as the demands of the school year increase:

• These can often be accessible to students, and this is one more way for boys to have reinforcement for responsibility and accountability with their schoolwork.

ZIPPERED BINDER (emphasis on zippered):

• Remind is a free mass-texting system that allows teachers to connect with parents (and students) through safe texting, where private numbers are kept secret. This is an instantaneous way to receive reminders or information and to respond when there are questions or clarification is needed.

• Zipper binders offer a way to keep papers, agendas, homework and any supplies together in one place.

• The ability to zip the binder shut helps reduce the amount of lost papers/supplies; this can help cut down on poor grades for missing assignments.

• Powerschool, used by many public systems, provides access for parents to their student’s daily classroom assignments, tests,

quizzes, and other grades. This is a great way to keep an eye on any missing assignments or poor test grades that may hint at a need for more preparation.

Organization has to be individualized for what works best for each student. Research shows us that boys perform best when they are hands-on and have set routines. Binders, daily agendas, and technology can be a powerful trio for successful organization.

When organization is no longer a villain, our boys will feel more confident and in control of their daily school life, and focus can then be placed on achievement and academic growth.

Not long after Sparkle Girl got her driver’s license, she began talking about wanting a car of her own.

I might ask her what she wanted for lunch, and she might say, “I don’t know. But I do know I want a car.”

“What show should we watch tonight?”

“I’m not sure. But I do know I want a car.”

I could go on, but you get the drift.

Now that she has her own car, the world is different. We knew that it would be. As with many big changes in life, though, I didn’t fully grasp how those changes would feel. And there were aspects of the changes that I didn’t see coming at all.

Back in the days before Sparkle Girl had her license, Garnet and I would have to drive her here and there. I was happy to do that. After a day at work, I sometimes wished that I didn’t have to go back out, but I could count on the actual experience of taking her and picking her up to be quite pleasant.

Just Sparkle Girl and me riding along, talking about whatever came up. Sometimes just riding along and not saying anything. I miss those times.

The other day, Sparkle Girl was talking about wanting to go somewhere, and I told her that I would be happy to take her.

When she and Garnet looked at me funny, I realized I had forgotten for a moment that she didn’t need for me to give her rides anymore. I felt a little sad.

We had known that we would miss her when she went off to college or moved out or took whatever that next big step proved to be. What I hadn’t realized, was how big a difference driving would be. Couple driving with a more active social life, and we just don’t see her as much as we used to.

I miss her.

At the same time, I understand that it’s a good thing that she has grown into a responsible and independent young woman.

As I think of one aspect or another of Sparkle Girl driving and her increased sense of independence, I am sometimes reminded of experiences connected with driving when I was in high school and with me exerting my independence. I already knew my parents took good care of me, but I am getting an even better sense of just how well they took care of me. It took going through similar experiences as a parent to give me that perspective.

One memory that was stirred up comes from the days before I had my driver’s license. I had a regular girlfriend, and my father would drive us on our dates. As a minister, he worked seven days a week and many nights, so he had learned how to grab a nap when the opportunity presented itself.

I learned early on that, as soon as my girlfriend and I got out of the car so that I could walk her to the door, he would fall fast asleep. So I didn’t have to worry about him waiting for me. We could visit at the door as long as we wanted to. When I went back to the car, I would wake up my dad and we would drive home.

Sparkle Girl driving and becoming more independent has also made Garnet and me more fully appreciate just what a lovely young woman she’s turning out to be.

“When you contact us, we’re going to use our 15 years of experience to advise you on how much food you’ll need,” said Sylvia Laurence of the Chickfil-A Hanes Mall Boulevard catering team. “We’ll ask if you need plates, cups, an ice bucket, or table cloths. We want to make things as easy as possible for you.”

When it comes to hosting a large function, she has three favorite suggestions for a successful event.

First off, there’s proper promoting. Sometimes, a simple e-mail to the office staff is all that is needed.

Other times, a formal invitation is sent. For events that are open to the public, Sylvia recommends using Facebook to get the word out. “Create an event page, and encourage people to share and post about the event on their personal pages,” she said. “It’s a great way to harness the power of social media and spread the word organically.”

With everyone’s lives being so busy these days, it’s important to place your event front and

center. Often, it’s helpful to remind people with an e-mail or social media post the day before the party.

Sylvia’s second tip is having plenty of good food. Perhaps you just need a few fruit trays to supplement your homemade Thanksgiving dinner. Whether you’re looking to purchase side dishes—or a variety of Chick-n-Strips and Chick-fil-A Nugget trays, you want to be in the sweet spot of having plenty of food without overdoing it. A good caterer can recommend how many trays of Chicken Salad Sandwiches or Grilled Chicken Cool Wraps you’ll need depending on how many you expect to attend, and also the ratio of children to adults.

Depending on the time of day, consider what people will want to eat. “Breakfast is often a lighter meal, so we suggest granola yogurt parfaits and fruit trays in addition to Chick-fil-A Chicken Biscuits and Chick-n-Minis Trays,” said Sylvia.

Of course, when it comes to food, you also want it to be delicious. “I think one of the reasons Chick-fil-A is such a popular catering choice is the freshness. Each nugget and chicken breast is individually hand-breaded by our awesome kitchen team. Our lemonade is fresh-squeezed daily and contains only lemons, water, and sugar or Splenda. The extra effort makes it taste extra good!”

Sylvia’s third recommendation for event planning is to establish a budget ahead of time. “Figure out how much you’re able to spend for each person, and this will help you have a concrete goal to stick to,” she said. And don’t forget about Pinterest for low-budget decoration ideas!

“Pinterest is chock-full of do-it-yourself centerpieces and decorations. It’s an amazing resource for party planning.”
