In

the month of May, we celebrate motherhood and remember those who died while serving our country. And are we ever grateful for both!

Moms are an amazing bunch! She’s there to kiss away a boo-boo or dry away the tears from a first love gone south. She makes our favorite meals and tucks us in at night. She stays up way past bedtime to help us get that school project finished that she asked us repeatedly if we had finished two days before. Yes, she’s got our back, she’s our own personal cheerleader in life and always makes us feel special. To my mom, Mary, and all the moms and mother figures out there, we are grateful for your love and support!

To many, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer. It is when many folks make their first trek to the beach in the new year. No one loves a beach trip more than me, but we must not let that overshadow this very important day set aside to remember! I give my eternal gratitude to the countless men and women who gave their lives in order that we may preserve the freedoms we enjoy today!

Eye Center of Winston-Salem has been serving patients in Forsyth and the surrounding counties for more than 20 years. A well-established eye care center, it is known for comprehensive eye care, including treatment for corneal disease, cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, routine eye exams, and eyelid and facial cosmetic surgery. To better serve patients and meet the needs of the rapidly growing region, Duke Eye Center of Winston-Salem continues to expand by adding new providers and services.

New Pediatric Services Faramarz Hidaji, MD serves as the first pediatric eye care provider at Duke Eye Center of Winston-Salem. He is a fellowship-trained, board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist, treating patients with strabismus, pediatric lacrimal disease, ptosis, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and pediatric cataracts.

He also sees adult patients requiring oculofacial plastic surgery for upper and lower blepharoplasty, brow lift, ptosis repair, tumor removal and eyelid reconstruction. Hidaji is a diplomat of the board of integrative holistic medicine. He joins Duke from Visionary Eye Care, PC, where he was the Medical Director for 17 years.

Hidaji uses each interaction with a patient as an opportunity to make a positive difference in his or her life. “It is an honor to serve the Forsyth community, work alongside leaders in ophthalmology at Duke, and maintain the reputation of excellence in patient care,” he said.

Not only is Hidaji committed to his local patients, he has a passion for fighting blindness around the world and has spent time abroad volunteering for Healing the Children NJ, Project Orbis and World Cataract Foundation. These organizations provide critical medical care to children around the world that they otherwise are unable to obtain. He recently completed a mission trip with Healing the Children in the Dominican Republic, where 25 strabismus surgeries were performed.

“Being able to donate my time to help these children is highly rewarding. When I am abroad on a mission trip, I am able to focus on helping children that may not have had a chance at treatment.

It reminds me of why I became a doctor in the first place,” said Hidaji.

In September, a new cornea and cataract specialist, and an oculofacial plastics specialist will join the practice to further expand eye care services in the region.

Carol Ziel, MD, glaucoma specialist and Medical Director for the practice, says that the growth of Duke Eye Center provides better access to specialty-trained ophthalmologist in the Winston-Salem area. “We are proud to serve our community and offer treatment for common to complex eye diseases,” said Ziel.

HIGH-ROPES COURSE Brings

Adventure-Based Counseling to CROSSNORE

As

the early morning sunlight filters through the trees, there is a quietness that settles over the Crossnore School & Children’s Home campus on Reynolda Road. In this serene setting, important work is done every day to bring hope and healing to children and families. Among the many tools Crossnore uses with these children is a new and exciting opportunity. Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, construction began last summer on a high-ropes course built by Beanstalk Builders, out of Morganton, NC. The course was opened in September with a training session for Crossnore staff.

The course has become the foundation of Crossnore’s Adventure-Based Counseling program, which is being used with residential, outpatient therapy, and day- treatment children. Andrew Florence has served Crossnore in several capacities for the last five years and in October of 2018, he became the Adventure-Based Counselor. Andrew holds a B.S. from Appalachian State University in Recreation Management with a Concentration in Outdoor Experiential Education. He is pursuing his Master of Science in Youth Development Leadership from Clemson University and will graduate in August of 2019.

The following is an interview with Andrew Florence about his work in Adventure-Based Counseling at Crossnore.

Q: What is Adventure-Based Counseling?

A: Adventure-based counseling is a specific method of doing groupbased therapeutic interventions. Typically, it includes games and physical activities and is built on having fun. It strips away the superficiality and gets to how kids relate to one another or how adult teams can relate to one another.

Q: How does Adventure-Based Counseling fit into a traumainformed care model?

A: As part of our commitment to trauma-informed care, adventurebased counseling activities help our kids recognize their similarities and identify their group belonging. This is important because group belonging, self-efficacy, and peer and adult attachments are the foundation of building resiliency for people who’ve experienced trauma.

With adults and children, it also helps us practice our commitment to shared governance. In the group process, everyone is important, no one is left out, and success relies on every person.

Also, the fun aspect of adventure-based counseling allows us to confront difficult conversations. Utilizing open communication with difficult discussions allows us to go deeper quickly.

Q: What tools do you use in AdventureBased Counseling?

A: As a trauma-informed organization, we recognize that traumatized kids and adults hold their trauma in their bodies. This intervention helps a person connect to their body and their brain to feel empowered and validated in their experiences and what they are capable of.

When a child experiences trauma, they go into a state of hyperarousal. The same thing happens when you utilize a tool such as the new high-ropes course on the Winston-Salem campus. The course helps each participant face the fear part of their brain and retrains them on how to face stress. It’s a tool to work on how they get through each day, how they relate to their past, and what their future looks like.

Other tools include games and activities on the farm, such as with the therapy horses. We also hope to install a low-ropes course in Winston-Salem in the future. After a session of Adventure-Based Counseling, each child participates in processing the experience with their peers, as well as with safe and caring adults and caregivers. This is an important part of the group process.

Q: What are your hopes for Adventure-Based Counseling at Crossnore?

A: I would love for us to engage every program for the kids—those in foster care and adoptions, residential, and day treatment— at all our locations. Doing so would help us build community within and across all the programs.

A: With our adult teams, adventure-based counseling will help us to face and handle the vicarious trauma and organizational trauma inherent in the type of work that we do. We can learn to be more empathetic with one another and create a work environment that is more engaging and fun. This also creates belonging and helps staff identify their part in meeting our mission.

Q: Is the high ropes course open to the public?

A: It is currently used by our trained staff and only with Crossnore clients. However, the course has the potential to be a great resource here in Winston-Salem. We are looking at the possibilities for public use for the future. This could include team building, team bonding, and team development for corporate groups and other youth-serving agencies.

SEE and focus on Literacy

ccording to Prevent Blindness North Carolina, more than 25,000 preschoolers and close to 350,000 school-age children have visual problems. Children like sevenyear-old Aiden Bradley who was born with vision challenges and whose family struggled for many years to find resources that would help make the most of what vision he did have.

“It was very frustrating for me as a parent not to be able to immediately connect him with the services he needed,” said Aiden’s mom Amanda.

“We saw countless specialists before we finally found our answer at the Community Low Vision Center in Winston-Salem.”

The Community Low Vision Center (CLVC) is operated by nonprofit IFB Solutions, headquartered in Winston-Salem, the largest employer of people who are blind in the country.

In addition to the Winston-Salem location, IFB has centers in Durham and Asheville—as well as a Mobile Vision Clinic, which travels across the state bringing IFB’s low-vision expertise directly into the community. Each CLVC is staffed by Low Vision Associates who are low-vision themselves and bring a wealth of personal experience in emerging assistive technologies and everyday solutions, such as talking watches and large-print books.

The Centers serve all ages from young children to older adults.

While at the Community Low Vision Center, Aiden and his mom learned about IFB’s SEE (Student Enrichment Experience) Summer Camp and After-School experiences, designed specifically for children who are blind or low-vision, and IFB’s Focus on Literacy program. Focus on Literacy pairs school-age children with assistive devices to use at home to complete school assignments and foster a love of reading.

Both the SEE Summer Camps and Focus on Literacy are completely free, thanks to generous donations and grants to IFB. Each year, 150 children participate in the SEE experiences and over 150 families like Aiden’s receive assistive technology through Focus on Literacy.

“Both the SEE experiences and Focus on Literacy support IFB’s mission of providing opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired, so they can succeed in every area of life,” said Barbara Soderlund, IFB’s Low Vision Services Manager.

In Aiden’s case, Focus on Literacy has energized a love of school and of learning.

“Aiden is an entirely different kid, who now likes to go to school because he has the confidence that he can be successful,” says Amanda. “Since receiving the technology, he’s moved up two reading groups and is excelling at math. It’s truly been amazing.”

The Montessori School of Winston-Salem:

A Parent’s Perspective

The

Montessori School of Winston-Salem, TMS, has been providing a unique educational experience to this community for 45 years. Their programs have evolved and changed over the years, leading up to a current program that ranges from the age of 18 months through the ninth grade.

The Montessori method of learning, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, began in 1897 and is based on her scientific observations of children.

She developed a responsive approach to education, centered on the specific and changing developmental needs of children as they grow. Each age program is intentionally designed so that students are able to be active participants in their own learning, in an environment that is set up to be supportive and prepared for learning, and with responsive guidance from highly skilled teachers. The aim is to foster each child’s growth physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively.

The best way for a prospective family to see and understand the value of an education at TMS is to hear what current families have to say about their experience. They have the greatest understanding of the culture, nurturing environment and education that is provided. Parents were asked about their experiences with key elements of the education at TMS. Here is what they had to say.

Social-emotional learning is an important part of a child’s development and is also a very important part of the Montessori method of learning. When asked what she appreciates about the social and emotional development her child has experienced at TMS, Jennifer, who has an 11-year-old in the Elementary Program said, “Being at TMS for eight years has taught my child empathy, kindness, compassion for herself and others and for her community. The environment at TMS is one that has allowed her to be herself, express

herself, and promotes healthy selfesteem and confidence. She truly feels comfortable enough to explore any avenue of learning at TMS. She has developed life-long friendships and the ability to work well with others, both in pairs and larger groups and public speaking.”

TMS is dedicated to providing a wellrounded educational experience and preparing each child for a successful life beyond its campus. Patrick, who has a 13-year-old in the Adolescent Program, was asked about how he felt about the academic experience and preparation provided by TMS. He said, “We feel she is being prepared very well for expectations beyond a standard middle school class environment. The foundational academic concepts are being well covered, in addition to practical life skills like public speaking, engaging with the larger community, and understanding business concepts like budgeting and balancing a checkbook. The focus at TMS on meaningful work and experiences in the outdoors is especially beneficial for our teen. The experiences she has had connecting to her school community and to the broader community in Winston-Salem and the world has expanded her thinking and encouraged her empathy.”

The staff at TMS is second to none. They are highly skilled and continuously learning new ways to enhance the growth of their students.

Parents get to know teachers and staff as they navigate the needs of their child’s growth together. Allison is a parent of a three-year-old in the Children’s House Program. She values the training and implementation of the Montessori method that the faculty and staff at TMS take very seriously. When speaking about the value of the teachers and staff at TMS, she said, “The thing is, all the skills are valuable and they are learned through work (“Play is the work of the child”—Dr. Montessori).

The Montessori teacher is extensively trained to cultivate these activities. This intertwining of skills is what makes the Montessori method of education amazing. What makes TMS amazing is the faculty and staff commitment to providing this learning model.”

There is a strong sense of community when you are a part of the TMS family. Everyone is invested in each child and the families all learn and grow together. Amber, a parent of a two-year-old in the Toddler Program really appreciates this community and what it provides for her child. She spoke to the value of the TMS community when she said, “It is a close-knit community. Everyone is invested in providing the best, most enriching and

safest environment for our children. The leadership is accessible, directly addresses concerns and is open to change, all of which promotes an engaging community at TMS.” The Montessori School of Winston-Salem is located at 6050 Holder Road in Clemmons. ayworth-Miller Funeral Home stays abreast of cultural changes and generational preferences when offering a variety of ways for family members to honor the passing of loved ones. This sensitivity, along with dedication to their motto, “Old Values, New Traditions,” has resulted in the creation of a new facility adjacent to their Silas Creek location in Winston-Salem. The Robert F. Miller Center, named for co-founder, Robert F. Miller Sr., is currently under construction, with an expected opening date in late 2019. This modern new facility will include a catering kitchen, as well as a state-ofthe-art sound system.

The Robert F. Miller Center will offer an ideal space for visitations, receptions, and celebrations of life for loved ones. The center can also be used as an alternative to the chapel area, if guests would like a more intimate service. The multi-use room can be designed for a meal with tables and chairs, or as a greeting area arranged to fit the family’s needs. Hayworth-Miller will partner with catering companies to offer menu choices, or families can choose their own catering options if a gathering with food is desired. Options for how this new space can be used to honor the passing of loved ones are numerous. It can be used for a stand-alone memorial service or for a reception in conjunction with a more formal funeral service in the main chapel.

The dedicated staff at Hayworth-Miller seeks to serve grieving families by making the funeral and celebrations of life services as easy and stress-free as possible, while maintaining an atmosphere of caring and quality. The new Robert F. Miller Center adds another layer of options to meet these needs.

Robert F. Miller, Sr. co-founded Hayworth Miller Funeral Home with W. Paul Hayworth in 1961, making it one of the oldest funeral homes in the state, and one of the few still family-owned. Hayworth Miller offers five Triad locations to serve the community— Winston-Salem, Kernersville, Rural Hall, Advance and Lewisville—all of which provide full-service funerals and cremations, customized to meet families’ needs. kindergarten already behind. Imprints Cares works to equip parents with the tools they need to raise children who are socially, emotionally and academically ready to succeed in school, closing the achievement gap before it opens.

Stories like Tanya and Cara’s underscore the importance of the Ready for School programs offered at Imprints Cares, a local education nonprofit that has been providing services to Forsyth County families for the last 50 years. Every child is born with tremendous potential, but what happens in his/her early environment plays a pivotal role in long-term development.

Imprints Cares helps parents become their children’s first, best teachers. Family educators in the Pediatric Holistic Health Initiative, based in several pediatric offices, function as part of the primary care team and serve more than 500 children every year. Our family educators offer free screening and support for common concerns that doctors lack time to address. Maria Stockton, a family educator based at the Downtown Health Plaza, describes a typical day, “I might perform a developmental assessment on a child whose father is worried that he is not talking as much as his siblings did at that age, or strategize with a young mother about how best to address her daughter’s sleep issue, or assist a new mom with breastfeeding concerns.” She continued, “If it appears that a family needs more intensive assistance, I will refer the family

anya is a teen mom who had Cara when she was 16 years old. Tanya began working with an Imprints Cares family educator shortly after she gave birth to Cara. In the last three years, Tanya has enrolled in, and was graduated from, Forsyth Tech with her High School Diploma, and is currently taking college level classes. She hopes to become a nurse and is working hard to achieve her goals. Tanya said, “I love doing the activities that the family educator brings with Cara. Cara loves to learn and can tell me all her colors, numbers, and shapes, and is currently learning her letters.” At 3 years old, Cara loves books and is on track to be ready for kindergarten.

to our Parents as Teachers (PAT) home visiting program.”

Families enrolled in the PAT program receive two in-home visits per month, designed to meet their specific needs, from birth through entry into kindergarten.

“At each visit, family educators bring activities and books to share with parents; we assess children annually to identify areas of concern, and promote positive parenting in every visit,” explained Berta Andrade, Director of Ready for School Programs. In 2018, Imprints Cares made more than 2,700 home visits and delivered nearly 4,000 books to children. According to PAT standards, 91 of Imprints Cares children are ready for kindergarten.

Brain building is not complete when a child reaches school. Families still need support to ensure that their children do not fall behind in school. Imprints Cares offers high-quality before- and-afterschool programming to 1,500 children onsite at 20 schools in the WS/FCS. We also provide before- and-after school care for children with special needs at our downtown location.

Betty West, Director of Imprints Cares Expanded Learning Programs, noted, “Our programs are unique because teachers and school staff comprise 70% of our team. Our parents know and trust the staff who continue the school day with health and fitness activities, dedicated homework time and mentoring.” In January, Imprints Cares began offering a hot supper to students at our 9 Title 1 Schools. 300 students per night are taking advantage of this opportunity. Thanks to faithful donors, scholarship funds are in place to help families take advantage of these opportunities.

March 16th, many guests and participants gathered at the Bridger Field House to enjoy the annual event, “Men Who Cook,” benefiting SECU (State Employees’ Credit Union) Family House. This fun, interactive event was launched in 2016, three years ago, in an effort to support the mission of the Family House, which is to provide hospitality and affordable lodging to families and caregivers traveling to Winston-Salem for medical treatment.

The evening kicked off with Michael Hastings (Food Editor for the Winston-Salem Journal) and Dave Goren (Executive Director at National Sports Media Association) emceeing the event with their vibrant personalities. There were 22 teams that entertained and provided delicious samples of their work. Guests could purchase wine corks for the wine wall pull, and vote for their favorite chef or dish the evening of the event by purchasing “tip chips,” or by donating online prior to the event.

Donna and Bill Lawler were the 2019 event chairs, as well as more than 30 on-site volunteers.

The presenting sponsor was Wake Forest Baptist Health. Other sponsors were Novant Health, Publix Supermarkets Charities, Visit Winston-Salem, Reynolds American, and many other companies and individual “wooden spoon” and “iron skillet” sponsors.

children in Forsyth County deserve the opportunity to succeed in school and in life. Brain science has confirmed what most parents already know, namely, that the first five years of life are a time of tremendous physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. These years are especially critical for the construction of a child’s developing brain.

Unfortunately, too many children in Forsyth County are not reaching their full potential. Nearly half are not proficient in reading by third grade. From there, it’s hard to catch up. A Harvard University study ranks Forsyth County as the 5th worst out of 2,873 counties in the nation for helping poor children move up the economic ladder.

Fortunately, there are proven ways to help children enter kindergarten ready to achieve socially, emotionally, and academically. Extensive research over the past forty years shows that high-quality Pre-K programs are a wise investment that close educational achievement gaps and improve health and well-being far into adulthood.

Forsyth County is poised to provide all families with the opportunity to enroll their four-year-old children in affordable, high-quality Pre-K programs. We can build on the solid

standards and best practices of current programs funded by the North Carolina Pre-K Program (NC Pre-K) and provided in classrooms in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, at Family Services Head Start program, and in private community childcare centers.

There’s still much work to do. Any expansion of the current system will require improvements in quality, additional facilities, more qualified and better compensated teachers, and the establishment of an administrative structure to ensure uniform practices and positive outcomes.

We know what needs to be done and how to do it. But to make this vision a reality, support is needed from elected officials, business and civic leaders, and everyday people committed to the well-being of our community.

The time has come for Forsyth County to take this step on behalf of its youngest children – our future workers, parents, citizens, and leaders.

FF: What are current interest rates like? What should we look for?

ASHLEY: “This can be a tricky question, because rates are dependent on lots of factors. When shopping for a mortgage, consumers should be looking for the lowest APR (annual percentage rate).

This is the best indicator of the total cost of the mortgage. The great news is that interest rates are at a historic low, making it an ideal time to purchase or refinance.”

FF: As first-time buyers, how can we make sure we understand ALL the related costs we will encounter?

ASHLEY: “When shopping for a mortgage, be sure you ask for a fee estimate, and ask your loan officer to review each of the specific fees with you.

Most of the items are third-party related, and not lender-specific. The fees that will most often vary from lender to lender are the origination charges/points, the flat processing/commitment fee, and the appraisal charges.”

WINSTON-SALEM GREEK FESTIVAL:

HONORING ROOTS OF PAST AND PRESENT

While

this year marks the 27th year of the annual Winston-Salem Greek Festival, the roots of Winston-Salem’s Greek community extend much deeper.

Boasting the second-largest Greek community in North Carolina, The Triad saw the first set of Greek immigrants arrive in the early 1900s.

These immigrants ventured to the Piedmont with empty pockets, yet hearts full of ambition, passion and a hope for building a better life for themselves and future generations. It is this passion for, and dedication to, upholding the values of community, tradition, and hospitality (“philoxenia”) that the Greek community in Winston-Salem was founded upon. The community has always had a strong desire to share their unique heritage.

Thus, the Greek Festival was born.

Given that tradition is a big part of Greek culture, everything at the Greek Festival—from the food to the dancing—is firmly established in the roots of community and hospitality. While it is an honor for the Greek community of Winston-Salem to share their traditions (and delicious food) with others, the true blessing is how the event brings the church together and to witness how much the Winston-Salem community embraces being Greek for a weekend.

ENTERTAINMENT

In true Greek fashion, the Festival does not lack in entertainment. Live music and dancing take place throughout the day. For the third year in a row, the “Zorba Squad” will be on-site to provide extra entertainment and Greek dance lessons for the audience. Aside from the music and dancing, the Festival includes church tours, a vendor’s market, and cooking demonstrations.

FOOD

In even truer Greek fashion, food is one of the main attractions. On the savory side, the Festival features souvlaki, gyros, Greek-style baked chicken, mousaka, spanakopita, and more.

The women of the congregation spend months preparing homemade pastries for the Festival— something that is particularly confined to the Winston-Salem Greek Festival. Traditional pastries include rizogalo (a Greek rice pudding), kokakia (Greek cream puffs with a chocolate glaze), diples (Greek honey rolls), and of course, baklava.

A limited drive-thru menu will also be available, with a feature of online ordering on the festival website, wsgreekfestival.com. People can also order by calling (336) 765-FOOD, and get pick-it-up efficiently in a separate drive-thru line, without having to get out of their car!

DETAILS

The festival—held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 435 Keating Drive (off of Country Club Road)—runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday (May 17th-18th) and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday (May 19th). All dining, entertainment, and vending areas are covered by tents, allowing for a Greek-good time, rain or shine.

Leading the Central Carolina Modern Woodmen team is Jason Keller. Jason brings a rich and diverse background to Modern Woodmen that benefits both his clients and the team he leads.

“Before I joined Modern Woodmen,” explained Jason, “I was a teacher. Though I was raised in Morganton, North Carolina, I went to college in Pensacola, Florida and stayed to teach. By day, I taught math, science, and history to sixth graders at one of the largest private schools in the Southeast. And in the evenings, I worked on my Master’s degree. Two years later, after earning my Master’s, I was offered a position as an upper elementary principal, where I led 16 teachers and 500 students.

“After four years, I felt a calling to go home to North Carolina,” Jason continued. “After I relocated to the Triad, I spent four years as a principal at a private school in Davidson County.”

Jason left the education field and found himself in the role of a business consultant. “It seems like an odd transition, but I love small business. That was a primary focus of mine in college, and I enjoyed the new challenge. Especially as I helped a friend turn his struggling business into something successful and profitable.”

After his friend sold his business, Jason took another job, but soon realized that as long as he wasn’t the boss—he was going to be limited. And he wanted to experience growth and new challenges.

“While all of this was going on,” shared Jason, “I had been helping a friend from church with some financial planning. My friend eventually asked me why I wasn’t making a living at what I’d been helping him do, and honestly, I spent the next six months pondering that very question.”

Jason Keller called a recruiter for Modern Woodmen. He was the first in Central North Carolina to follow the Pathway to Leadership track. In six short years, Jason has grown tremendously. “Without the glass ceiling limiting my progress, I was made a Managing Partner of Modern Woodmen inside of two years,” said Jason. “Now, I manage a team of 16 agents and six offices in Central North Carolina.”

And as if Jason weren’t busy enough with the operations of his office, he’s also an Executive Pastor for Freedom Family Church in Liberty, North Carolina. Jason is also married with five children, one of whom is in the National Guard, and the other four are students at Winston-Salem Christian School.

“I love this business,” said Jason. “While I have a very full plate, my job is a passion for me because at the heart of it—it’s still teaching. I may have left the field of education over ten years ago, but teaching has never left me.”

While most people don’t typically think of teaching and financial advisor in tandem, for Jason, it’s a natural segue. “We can never stop learning or growing. I don’t want my clients to be uninformed about their money. So a big part of my financial advisory strategy is teaching them how to manage their money for optimal growth.”

And teaching doesn’t start and stop with the client. “I teach my team every Monday. We are always learning something new. We utilize a lot of John Maxwell’s leadership strategies, and in 2018, I became a John Maxwell Team Certified Trainer.”

It boils down to the compound effect, which is Jason’s favorite part of his job. “When I can help someone understand how to make better choices now, it’s going to have an impact on their future, and the future of their family, as well as the future of their community. It’s like that stone thrown into a still pond.

l The ripple effects are wide-reaching, and while I may not know the long-term impact, I am grateful to be a part of it. I’m helping our clients build a better future for themselves and their families. And I’m helping our team members grow and develop their own financial independence and professional portfolio.”

2019 has gotten off to a great start for Jason. “I’m expanding my services this year to include public speaking engagements,” he said. “As a John Maxwell Team Certified Trainer, I can help organizations with leadership and development strategies, in addition to helping counsel others to be financially healthy. It’s a win-win in my opinion.”

“When I bring someone new on our team,” said Jason, “I’m looking for people who have a passion for growing and a thirst for knowledge. By building a team of professionals who share my vision, the sky is really the limit! It enables me to juggle my roles as a husband, father, and minister.”

Modern Woodmen of America has given Jason the opportunity to embrace his love for teaching while stretching his entrepreneurial wings. He’s asked many questions throughout the course of a day, and a common one always circles back to the name of the organization. “People ask me all the time if I carry an axe,” laughed Jason. “No—I don’t even own an axe.”

Community involvement is also a priority for Jason.

“I serve on an advisory committee that designs and oversees programs for Forsyth County High School students who are participating in work-based learning academies. It’s been great! I’ve even been able to hire some high school interns to help them develop their skills and resumes.”

Jason is also active in the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Board since 2014. “The Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce is an amazing organization,” said Jason.

“With such an emphasis on small, locally-owned businesses, it’s been a great way to meet others in the community, especially in the various leadsgroups.”

ee Parker and Olivia Kleinmaier, real estate brokers with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Carolinas Realty, enjoy the longest agent partnership in the Winston-Salem area. They formed their team in January of 1996 after Dee returned from the industry’s national convention in Atlanta where she realized that partnerships among agents were becoming a national trend.

In the mid-90s, agent partnerships were virtually unheard of in Winston-Salem or the Triad. Many of Dee and Olivia’s colleagues thought that partnering in an industry of independent contractors would not work, but Dee and Olivia moved forward with determination. Now, 23 years later, they continue to celebrate their decision. In total, they are currently in their 32nd and 30th years, respectively, in the business. Dee said, “For many years, we marketed ourselves with the logo “The Leading Ladies of Real Estate,” but I expect the time has come to use “Real Estate’s Golden Girls,” referencing the long-running TV series about seasoned women who still found a lot of purpose and gusto in life.

These ladies see in each other the same strong work ethic, and they value having a partner who is invested equally in serving their clients. Both have spent their entire careers in the Winston-Salem and surrounding market and have a wealth of knowledge about home values and neighborhoods. Get Messy, Play, and Learn at Camp Kaleideum!

Summer’s

right around the corner! And, with the change of season and end of school, comes the promise of all sorts of adventures—beach trips, lazy days by the pool, family fun at the baseball field, and, of course…summer camp.

Kaleideum is offering a variety of camps where kids can do everything from using real tools and creating puppets to exploding volcanoes and building simple machines. Camps take place at both Kaleideum sites: for ages 3 through rising 2nd graders at Kaleideum Downtown, and for rising Kindergarten through rising 6th graders at Kaleideum North.

Camps begin June 10th and run through August 23rd. Camps for ages 3 and 4 take place for a half day (9 am-12:30 pm), and camps for rising Kindergarten-6th graders are full day (9 am-4 pm). Many of the camps offer single-day options, allowing campers to attend for only a day or two, rather than an entire week. “This is a great “ease-in” option for youngsters who prefer not to attend a whole week of camp, and it also helps accommodate vacation schedules, as well as family budgets,” said Lindsay Douglas, Manager of Camps.

Before-care is available at Kaleideum North, beginning at 8 am, and after-care is available (for full-day campers) at both locations until 5:30 pm.

“All of our camps are very interactive and hands-on,” explained Douglas, “and, in addition to projects related to the camp theme, all of them also allow time for children to explore the Museum exhibits, play outside, get to know other campers, and more.”

Summer Camp Packing Essentials

You’ve

signed your child up for sleepover summer camp and everyone is excited. Now the looming question hits you. What do they need to pack? Packing for an overnight camp can be a daunting task. However, follow these few simple suggestions and checklist and you will breeze through it!

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute Most camps will send you a list of suggested items to pack. In addition, items they do not want brought to camp.

Some camps may require certain types of soaps and chemical-free bug sprays that will not harm the environment. If you don’t plan, you may be rushing the night before looking for specific items.

Alternatively, you may have questions that you don’t have time to ask. Save yourself from stress by buying or setting aside things to pack as early as possible.

Use a Packing List One of the best ways to make sure you don’t forget anything is by using a checklist. Here is a basic list of stay-over camp packing needs. Again, double check the camp information about any specific items you may need.

Keep in mind, kids often lose things.

Hence, I suggest packing items that you don’t mind losing, being left behind or ruined. It is also a great idea to label all of your kid’s clothes and other items. Pack a black and silver Sharpie in their bag in case something else needs labeling.

Silver works better on darker items.

Optimize space in their suitcase by rolling clothes instead of folding.

Pack smaller items inside larger ones.

Additionally, to protect from spills, pack toiletries in Ziploc bags.

Leave Technology at Home!

There is no need for your child to bring their phone with them. The camp has phones if a homesick call needs to be made or in case of an emergency.

Cell phones and tablets will only distract them from the true fun they should be having at camp. Moreover, it could keep them from making new friends. This is due to their trying to stay constantly connected to friends and family back home.

More importantly, you didn’t spend your money sending them to camp to play video games or surf social media sites.

Don’t Worry Try not to worry! You have packed and prepared them the best you could. Now it is time for them to show you they can handle the independence. Yet, here are a few more suggestions to ease your mind.

Pack in their luggage an inventory list of everything they brought.

That way there is a better chance of “most” everything making it back home. At least we hope, right?

Another extra, you could hide little “Thinking of you” notes in their suitcase. Periodically they will come across one and know you are always thinking of them.

Now sit back and enjoy your quiet, peaceful time while you can!

Do kids and vegetables really not go hand in hand?

Not at all! They are made for each other.

We learn our eating habits at an early age, but we can change and start early teaching our kids about the importance of healthy food and exercise for growing bodies.

where their food comes from is also a great way to increase their knowledge and appreciation, engaging their natural curiosity. If given a chance, most kids love gardening and getting their hands dirty! It’s not hard to make nutrition a fun family affair!

Kids are like sponges, and for the most part they are eager to learn. I believe that, given a chance, children will learn to adopt good habits because they realize the benefits.

How young can a child start cooking? What are ways for children to get involved in the kitchen?

I tell parents all the time that toddlers can start helping in the kitchen as early as two years old! Toddlers can tear lettuce or greens; slightly older kids can snip parsley with scissors or use an egg beater. Using the kitchen in your own home is a great place to engage with kids and teach them healthy eating habits early—I say, the younger the better! Parents should continue to introduce new foods all the time and have their children “play” with different foods, exploring textures, colors, and smells.

What do young children understand about nutrition? How can we explain to them it is important without boring them to tears?

I strongly feel that modeling healthy eating habits is central to teaching kids the importance of good nutrition.

Providing fruit and vegetables as snacks instead of less healthy items is a simple and easy way to help them while helping yourself! Children should be included when shopping for, and when preparing, fruits and vegetables. Teaching kids

to teach our kids, there should be open communication and a little wiggle room.

What are some of the biggest nutrition pitfalls for busy families?

As we overload our schedules with activities or strive to juggle the demands of multiple jobs, convenience and fast food items can feel like the only solution. But if we establish a plan of action, make a grocery list, plan a few days a week for meals at home, this can actually save you money and provide an opportunity for quality time around the table.

Planning improves your health in the long run—and asking kids to help plan the menu is a win win.

Are sweets and treats always bad?

We live in a world bombarded with unhealthy options, and some of those are marketed to children. How do you suggest that parents navigate this?

Parents should establish a strong foundation and plan early, so that kids are equipped with the knowledge that not all foods are beneficial for their growing bodies. Parents should let kids know that an occasional treat can be enjoyed from time to time, but that as with all things in life, what is important is establishing a balance.

I’ve worked with families that were very strict and rigid when it came to treats and sweets and the result was that the children would sneak around and actually hide foods they’d get at school or from friends. Just like any habit or value we try

Nope! Not at all. Balance and a diversity of food is the most important thing. In fact, a sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise can be just as dangerous as a sweet treat, if not balanced with a nutritious diet.

Children facing obesity issues can most definitely benefit from 60 minutes of physical activity a day, which is what is recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This could be riding a bike, playing, running outside or family walks. Putting a growing child on a “diet” is the last line of defense. We would much rather recommend a course of moderate exercise and focusing on a balanced diet and lifestyle to combat weight management issues.

Who Are You?

Advice for the Class of 2019

As

I sit here today thinking about what advice a man of my age can impart to the young people who are about to graduate and move on with their lives, I guess I have one question for you…

“Who are you?”

Some of you are older teenagers, graduating from high school; others are in your early twenties, graduating from college, and perhaps even some of you are mature, older adults who have gone back to school to get that elusive degree in an effort to change the course of your future, more to your liking. Nonetheless, the question I have is that now you’ve completed this important aspect of your life, how much closer are you to understanding who you really are? Who do you want to be; what do you want to be?

When I first began high school back in the day, I checked out a book from the library—that’s the way we did it in those days. The book was entitled, Your Career in Data Processing.” Some back story to bring you up to speed: this was before personal computers ever existed, much less the Internet.

Many companies ran on pen and paper and performed accounting practices through journals, etc. The computers that were being used by midsize to large companies were huge by comparison.

For instance, there’s more power on the desktop computer I’m writing this on than there was in many companies’ entire systems. I was hooked; I knew this was what I wanted to do.

As luck would have it, I eventually got my “dream job” working as Manager of Computer Operations for a furniture manufacturer. Today they call it IT (Information Technology).

My career goal had been achieved, or so I thought, at least; ultimately, though, life had other plans, as is oftentimes the case. In this situation, however, that’s a good thing. I love what I do, and it’s something that comes naturally to me. And I know it’s something that I’ve become better at over the years. So if you asked me that same question today, “Who are you?” my obvious response would be, “I’m a writer.”

Therefore, I want to take this question a little deeper. After all,

if you had asked me back in high school I would have said, “I’m going to work with computers one day,” never imagining that nearly everyone would be able to say the same thing in some form. Yet, I would have been wrong, because that’s what I’d planned to do with my career—not, however, who I was.

It’s only through accident really that I discovered I had a skill for writing. Later on in my career, after deciding information technology wasn’t a good fit for me, I began work as a technical writer, and found that line of work to more suitably match my skill set. The writing was formal and less creative, but even so, it was still writing. It felt like a natural progression when I ultimately began writing commercially. Today, I’m doing something that I feel matches my natural abilities, and something I want to continue doing as long as I can be successful at it.

That’s quite a change from the fourteenyear-old boy in high school meticulously planning his future, thinking he had it all figured out.

Which brings me back to you… again I ask, “Who are you?” If you could spend every day of the next week doing a single thing you liked, what would it be? What would you do, even if you weren’t getting paid for it? What passions lie inside you, regardless of what major you’re going to study in college, or degree you ultimately obtain(ed) upon college graduation?

That’s what you felt at the time, perhaps that’s what you’ll go into at the beginning of your career, or perhaps life has other plans. Regardless, take a moment to ask yourself, is there something inside you that drives you and inspires you and fits your natural talents and abilities? You may not know yet; it may not be time. But if you do, take some time to imagine yourself in that place, and see if it’s something that you can make a reality one day. If so, then plan on it; make it happen, maybe not at first, but eventually. I assure you, you’ll be happier for it.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2019. May each of you find the eventual answer to that all-important question and achieve it for yourself in the future, whatever it happens to be. Till then, I wish you the very best, and may your glass always be half-full.

Summer Safety Here

we are in May, and as fast as the year has already gone, we will soon be in the full swing of summer. I love the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer – the warm, sunny days, cooking out, staying light longer and just being outside enjoying it all. One of my favorite things about summer is vacation time.

I love that my grandkids are on summer break, and, outside their summer camps, are free to go and do without the usual time constraints.

Now that we have moved to the coast, my summer safety concerns have ramped up a bit. Going to the beach presents a few more concerns than the club swimming pool. When our house is built, there will be water just steps from the door – an “attractive nuisance” that will need special precautions taken to ensure safety.

Our daughters are all good swimmers, so I was very happy when they gave their children swim lessons at an early age. They have taken classes taught by specially trained instructors that teach them how to immediately flip on their backs and float if they fall in the water.

It progresses from floating and getting air, to their stomachs and swimming, and back and forth until they reach the edge of the pool. Children love being in and around water, so it is of utmost importance to make sure not only that they can swim, but also that they respect boundaries and rules for being in or near it. Our eldest granddaughter, a good swimmer, was made to wear a life jacket if she wanted to go farther out in the ocean.

She objected, lost the argument, and, when told of rip currents, decided life preservers were not such a bad thing.

Backyard pools can be great, but safety measures need to be taken not only in the water, but out of it as well.

My son-in-law was temporarily moved by his company to Texas. The house they rented while there had a pool.

It would have been so easy for a child to get out without anyone noticing. Fortunately, the homeowners had a lock at the top of the door that children could not reach.

It is good to have locks or alarms that are childproof on doors and windows whether you have a pool or not.

With the hot summer sun, there are other items we need to have on hand when the grandchildren come. A good sunscreen lotion is a must. It is important to buy a brand you can trust as there have been reports of children getting serious sunburns while using a cheap off-brand.

Sunscreens need to be applied according to directions to prove effective.

Mosquitoes, ticks and other unsavory insects can be kept at bay with a good repellent. There are several options to help keep them away and the family from being their meal. Make sure to keep it with you when going on a hike or in a grassy or wooded area, and reapply if outside for any length of time. Give everyone a good once over when you get home to make sure none of the little critters have come back with you.

In case of sunburn or bug bites, have soothing lotions for each to ease the pain or itching. A first-aid kit is advisable and should be checked from time to time to make sure it is well stocked.

Finally, make sure an adult has an eye on the children at all times. It is so easy for everyone to think someone else is keeping up with the young ones. Stress to your entire group all the safety rules you have in place and the importance of following them.

With the arrival of spring, you have probably seen a yard or two full of bright yellow or puffy, white flowers. While some consider them to be an eyesore, dandelions are quite an interesting little plant.

Dandelions may help with bones.

For instance, the dandelion flower opens in the morning, but closes up at night.

Dandelions have been shown to have antimicrobial and antiviral properties, and with those two attributes, they may help your body fight infections.

When the dandelion goes to seed (the white, puffy version of the dandelion), the seeds may travel five miles.

The name “dandelion,” comes from the French, “dent de lion,” which means “lion’s tooth.”

Dandelion root can be used as a substitute for coffee.

Because dandelion greens are full of calcium and vitamin K—they may be beneficial for healthy bones.

Dandelions may boost your immune system.

Dandelions contain powerful antioxidants.

Antioxidants can help prevent aging and certain diseases! Dandelions have been shown to protect cells from damage, reduce inflammation, fight cancer, and lower cholesterol!

While many consider dandelions a nuisance, and millions are spent every summer on pesticides to remove unwanted flowers like the dandelion, the dandelion offers an extraordinary number of health benefits. So much so, that in the past, people actually removed grass from their yards in order to grow more dandelions (as well as other herbal flowers, including chamomile).

Dandelions are edible.

As a natural diuretic, dandelion can help flush excess fluids from the body.

While your hope of getting them out of the yard has probably not been for culinary purposes, dandelions are a yummy and nutritious little flower. The flower is edible from the root up, and they can be cooked or eaten raw.

THE CENTER OF HOPE

A Safe Refuge during Trying Times

he Salvation Army in Winston-Salem, NC, has been part of our community since 1907. Caring for the poor and indigent of the city was the initial focus of The Army. Early intervention services included shelter, food, and clothing for the poor and homeless of Winston-Salem. Over the 111 years, the services and programs offered by The Salvation Army have grown from meeting the basic needs of people to many enrichment programs, but the outreach to those who seek a safe, caring, and compassionate refuge continues at the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope, where single mothers, single fathers, parents with children and single women have temporary emergency housing.

Since 1935, The Army has operated a homeless shelter in some form when it was known as a “transient lodge.” The Center of Hope, as it is now known, has been in its current location at 1255 N. Trade Street in downtown Winston-Salem since 1992.

Bob Campbell, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem, has said, “The Center of Hope serves families and individuals, giving them housing with the goal of enabling residents to return to permanent housing as soon as possible.

In 2017, the average stay for a family was

54 days. Residents receive three meals a day; The Center of Hope also serves a community breakfast 365 days a year and Sunday dinner to all who are hungry.”

One of those served by the Center of Hope during a time of need is Marcia Christopher, who had run out of options.

Marcia and her four children had been living in a one- bedroom apartment with her mother and a sister in New York City.

Although she had a job, Marcia needed a better place to live, so she moved her family to Winston-Salem, where they lived with another relative while she searched for work. Marcia was forced to leave that residence for her and her family’s safety due to domestic violence. The Salvation Army’s Center of Hope became a refuge for Marcia as well as her children. It was at the Center of Hope that Marcia met case manager Jemmise Bowen, who counseled Marcia to take time just to breathe, slow down and realize that everything was going to work itself out. And that is just what happened…

“I had an interview and got a job at Bib’s BBQ. I also found an apartment with the help of case manager, Na-Twan Robinson.

She took me to a place I had never seen before and when we moved in, I literally had everything I needed: beds,

furniture…everything. When my kids saw the apartment they said, ‘Mom, this is ours? This is where we are going to live?’

When we moved, I knew we had found home,” Marcia commented. For Marcia and her family, The Salvation Army and the Center of Hope were a stepping stone to a better life.

To continue helping those in the community like Marcia Christopher and her family, the Center of Hope needs support from the Winston-Salem community. “The Center of Hope is funded by multiple sources, including the United Way, various grant sources, private donations, and the Hands & Hearts of Women Luncheon, which will be held on Tuesday, April 30th, 2019, from 11:30 am -1 pm at Bridger Field House at Wake Forest University’s BB&T Field. The event will feature moving stories of the work of the Center of Hope from a former shelter resident who has returned to self-sufficiency, and a video of the Center of Hope, depicting the vital services provided to families in crisis. It will be a time of sharing, not only about the work we do, but the rewarding difference we make for those we help,” stated Bob. “Try to learn what pleases the Lord.” ~ Ephesians 5:10 The title of today’s story is the name of a game that your mom or dad might have played when they were young. It is also called “Mother (or Father), May I?” or “Simon Says.” Do you know this game?

One person is the “boss” and is called Captain (or Simon or Mother or Father). The Captain stands on one side of the room or yard, and the players are lined up on the other side. The leader gives a command to one of the players. It could be, “Take three baby steps forward,” or “Turn around four times,” or “Make a silly face.” The player must ask, “Captain, may I?” The Captain says, “Yes, you may,” or “No, you may not.” If you move without asking permission from the leader, you have to go back to the start. The winner is the one who gets to be the Captain first.

This game is a little bit like real life. In life, when you’re young (like now), your parents and teachers are the “Captain” or “Simon.” They help you learn to make good choices. You find out that obeying them makes life easier and happier.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1

When

my family and I moved into our home several years ago, it was the middle of winter, and our new yard looked pretty terrible. Other than a few evergreen shrubs that were badly in need of pruning, everything was dead. I remember looking forward to spring when I’d finally see what the twisted branches shooting up from the ground and off the tree trunks would produce, once the days grew longer and warmer. Would the tangled-up grapevine actually grow grapes? Would grass grow in the spots that were bare after spending the winter covered by a blanket of leaves?

I could only trust that the coming change of season would bring new life in the form of leaves, flowers, and maybe even some fruit to enhance and decorate our new yard.

That’s the beautiful thing about seasons. We have the assurance that things are not going to stay the way they are now, in our lives and in the environment around us.

In the tough, barren seasons of our lives, we can find hope in knowing that it truly is just temporary. The days will become brighter and new things will spring to life and grow.

If

someone were to write a classified ad seeking to fill the position of “Pastor’s Wife,” it might look something like this: WANTED: A dedicated, supportive woman to serve as partner to the minister of a local congregation.

She must have a sweet, friendly personality with an unlimited supply of energy, patience and free time. She must be an excellent wife, mother and homemaker, as the cleanliness of her home, her relationship with her husband and the behavior of her children will be closely monitored and assessed. In addition to maintaining the home and caring for the children, she will be asked to actively participate in numerous church ministries and activities. Cooking skills are a plus, because she will be expected to attend a multitude of pot-luck gatherings. Most importantly, she should be a woman of great faith who never stumbles in her walk.

Hours—24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year Salary—None Clearly, being a pastor’s wife is both incredibly rewarding and incredibly challenging. Be the one to tell her how much you appreciate her! And, don’t forget to pray for your pastor and his family on a regular basis.

Change is coming.

My Grace-Full Life

The 23rd Psalm I

wish Psalm 23 wasn’t synonymous with funerals.

There’s a lot of hope found in this passage, even from an everyday perspective.

Verses 1 - 3 In verses 1-3, it says, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

David, who wrote the 23rd Psalm, was well acquainted with the responsibilities of being a shepherd. He knew the shepherd’s resumé would include leading and guiding the sheep, taking them to pasture, and leading them to water. He knew that a good shepherd would protect his flock. David’s allegory is reflective of what Jesus does for us in everyday life.

This is what Jesus was saying in John 10:11, when He said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” It was also emphasized in Matthew 6:25-34, when Jesus described God’s care and provision, using the sparrows and the lilies as examples.

Jesus is also the Living Water that sustains us. That very Living Water that He offered the woman at the well in John 4:4-42 is the water that our souls crave.

And in verse 3b, where it states, “He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

Our sinful natures don’t lend themselves to righteousness because nothing we do is good enough. But Ephesians 2:10 reads, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

God has good assignments for us. He has things for us to do to benefit the Kingdom of God. And we are to walk that journey with Jesus daily, so that through Him, anything good we do reflects Him for others to see.

Verse 4 Psalm 23:4 says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

It’s common knowledge that in war, those who have a higher rank generally have an advantage over those who are below them. It’s in the valley that we feel the most vulnerable and at risk. Yet, we all experience time in the valley in the “shadow of death.” Whether that’s literal death, or a symbolic one—death of a relationship, marriage, job—those seasons in the valley leave us feeling exposed and at risk of attack. It’s in the valley where anxiety and fear linger.

David had his fair share of enemies. But he was a constant model of trusting faith in God. Let’s compare that verse to Romans 8:31 which reads, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” What others think of us is none of our business; and since we have God’s salvation and protection, we don’t need to worry about the opinions of others, even those who want to harm us in some way.

This verse shifts from the analogy of sheep and shepherd to that of a friendship. David had a friendship with God. Can we say the same about our relationship with Jesus?

Yet David wrote that he wasn’t afraid. He knew that no matter where the path took him, whether it was on higher ground or in the valley, God was his friend and walked with him. God’s words to Joshua were true for David, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Jesus, our Good Shepherd, states in Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

And they are true for us, too.

The final verse of the 23rd Psalm says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (verse 6).

A shepherd’s resumé would also include the ability to use a rod and staff. These are tools a shepherd would use to guide his sheep, but also defend them.

David’s reflection on these tools is reminiscent of God’s promise to guide and protect us. A promise we can depend on, too, because we know God has a plan for us.

Jeremiah 29:11 states, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” We can take comfort in His guidance and protection, even in the valley.

We are invited to the table of the King of Kings!

And we know that a king’s table is abundant and overflowing with good things.

David wasn’t perfect, but he was faithful, and he trusted God’s forgiveness, grace, mercy, and love!

He trusted, even if he didn’t understand God’s ways.

In Romans 8:38-39,Paul writes, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” With that truth, indeed, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

ho’s ready for swimsuit season? Anybody? Not this chick.

The remanence of carrying my son Edwin for 42+ weeks and the season of depressive over-indulgence which preceded it are stuck to my belly, hips, arms, thighs… well, everywhere. Yikes. I’m not at all content with the current state of my body and am even more uncomfortable sharing about it with you readers. My heart beats a little faster when I look at the calendar and see the rapidly decreasing remainder of weeks before my family vacation, where like it or not, I will have to battle my way into a swimsuit (and stay there, even though some areas of my body will enviably try to make an escape on their own).

While I’m not content with my body, I’m also not ashamed of it. I know it tells a story. It tells my story.

The stretch marks on my belly are not at all attractive, but they are a beautiful reminder of my son. I’m so thankful for his little life.

Rather than grimacing at these not-sosubtle marks each time I stare in the mirror, I’m humbled. They are part of who I am as a mother. They are evidence of the life I have lived. Why should that be shameful? I

know so many women who long for the opportunity to carry a child; there are many who would gladly gain stretchmarks all over their bodies, simply to share the joy of co-creating life. I am not ashamed of those beautiful scars.

Today the morning news reported yet another victim of suicide connected to the aftermath of mass gun violence. There is growing scientific evidence urging us as a community to reach out to those who struggle with depression or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder—like the survivors of violent events, or the loved ones they left behind.

So many suffer silently. As someone who has battled with seasonal depression, and grieved deeply for a personal loss, I literally carry the weight of my emotions.

My body tells the story of this struggle. I’m not ashamed of this weight. I’m blessed to be alive. I’m blessed to have a community of support who nurtured me through. I’m blessed to have access to health care which takes seriously the need for physical and mental health. I’m blessed to be among those surviving, whose only loss in the battle is a bit of vanity.

It’s important to remember that the resurrected Jesus had scars. His newly created, newly resurrected, fresh-from-thedepths-of-death body still had evidence of his suffering. The resurrected Jesus still had wounds. Have you ever thought about why those didn’t disappear? Why were they not completely healed over? Surely the same power of God at work bringing him back to life could have also removed those holes in his hands, feet, and side.

For better or worse, our bodies tell our stories. The media and world tell us to hide those blemishes, cover those scars and

His body told a story, too. His wounds were a healing reminder of the power of God and evidence that he had been to hell and back. Literally.

What’s the story your body tells? What scars or wounds do you hold? This Easter season, rather than aiming for the manicured perfection of a swimsuit model, may we have the grace to accept our bodies, our histories, and the scars that tell our story without hesitation or shame. May we have the grace to accept ourselves just as Christ accepts us, scars, stretch marks and all.

Winston-Salem Cycling Classic Adds More Kid-Focused Activities for 2019

A

a family-friendly treat, this year’s Winston-Salem Cycling Classic has made some big changes to its Sunday, May 26, lineup that will include bike fans of all ages.

The day kicks off at Shallowford Square in Lewisville, where the National Cycling Center (NCC) will host a free community festival from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to a bounce house, a fire truck and several local food trucks, Novant Health will also sponsor a kid’s bike rodeo and helmet fitting.

“Bike riding is a great activity for the whole family,” says Dr. Zach Sandbulte, a family medicine and sports medicine specialist with Novant Health. “But a poorly fitting helmet puts kids at risk for serious head injuries.

Our helmet clinic will let parents explore several different types of helmets to see what fits their child best. Plus, we’ll discuss tips to help make sure the helmet is snug and secure.”

The bike rodeo will give youth the opportunity to test drive bicycles of different types and sizes, including mountain bikes and road bikes. Instructors will also be on hand to help teach children how to ride a bike and educate all participants on the “rules of the road.”

“Our course will give riders the opportunity to test several scenarios and learn how to navigate them safely,” says Michael Hosey, director of community engagement and youth outreach for the NCC. “For example, children will learn how to ride alongside cars; how to start, stop and scan for hazards; and common hand signals cyclists use to communicate with drivers.”

TAKING IT TO THE STREETS Sunday’s event will also feature the return of the Fondo, an exciting 58-mile ride with cycling celebrities Bob Roll, Phil Gaimon and Robbie Ventura. And new this year, organizers have added shorter 12-mile and 31-mile “Fundo” options.

“A Fondo is a really fun cycling experience,” Hosey explains. “But the course can be challenging for families or leisure riders.

Our two Fundo rides will offer the same excitement and camaraderie as the Fondo event but at a slower, easier pace and shorter distance.”

Registration fees for all rides will benefit the National Cycling Center.

times a month since October 2018, a group of strangers-turned-friends has met at Highland Presbyterian Church to sew. The mission—Project: Buddy Bear.

Project: Buddy Bear founder Pat Taylor, who lost her own son in a car accident, decided to turn her personal heartache into an organization to help offer comfort to others. “I’ve been a fabric artist for over 40 years,” she said. “After my son died, I wanted to find a way to give back. I began sewing bears to donate last year, and after putting a call out for volunteer sewers, the concept began to take a life of its own.”

To date, Project: Buddy Bear volunteers have sewn and donated over 70 teddy bears to the WinstonSalem Police Department.

“These bears travel in patrol cars,” shared Officer Claudia Morgan. “Our officers give them to both children and adults who have found themselves in traumatic situations, including car accidents, fires,

domestic violence, crimes, or kind of emergency.”

The handmade bears take anywhere from three to eight hours to construct, depending on the details. “There’s something about these bears that is very special,” said Pat. “We are overwhelmed by the response we’ve received about them, and it feels so good to be doing something like this in the community. The Winston-Salem Police Department has been so supportive of our efforts. We’re actually having a hard time keeping up with the demand!”

As of March 2019, 12 active volunteers regularly sew. However, as Pat was quick to point out, sewing talent is optional. “We need volunteers who can cut out patterns or be bear stuffers. Every bear is uniquely made, so we need more hands!” Project: Buddy Bear volunteers meet from 10 AM – 12 PM on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, as well as the 4th Saturday of every month. They meet in the Highland Presbyterian Church Activity Center at 2380 Cloverdale Avenue in Winston-Salem.

“The need is great,” chimed in Officer Morgan. “We could easily give out multiple bears a day. Those who receive a bear appreciate the comfort they offer. The love that’s been poured into each bear is felt by those who cling to them in a time of crisis.”

In addition to volunteers, Pat shared, “We need supplies. Specifically, we need quilting cotton fabrics, new stuffing, and thread. We also accept monetary donations.”

December 3rd, 2018, Yadkin Riverkeeper, based in Winston-Salem, NC, announced the appointment of Brian Fannon as its new Riverkeeper. Yadkin Riverkeeper, a nonprofit organization for over ten years, functions as the protector and voice for the Yadkin River. As shared in their press release, Board President Vanessa Zboreak also announced Edgar Miller as the new Executive Director. “We are excited to have a new leadership team in place and look forward to their being on the front lines of efforts to protect and advocate for water quality in the Yadkin River watershed. The river provides drinking water for nearly 850,000 people in the northwest and central Piedmont regions of the state and is the state’s second largest watershed, comprising almost 7,200 square miles.”

Brian is a native of North Carolina.

He worked as a fisheries biologist in Alaska and along the East Coast, held positions in natural and cultural history preservation and interpretation, including as Education Director at Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center in Statesville, NC, and taught environmental science at schools and universities, including Salem College and in rural Kenya. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree

“My vision for Yadkin Riverkeeper is to pursue swimmable, fishable, and drinkable water for all residents of the Yadkin watershed,” Brian shared in the press release. “I hope to encourage people not only to appreciate the Yadkin, but also to enjoy the river—the history, boating, fishing, and just plain playing in the water that reconnects us with our world.”

What are some initiatives that Yadkin Riverkeeper has in process?

RIVER RECONNECT A reminder of the close relationship folks living in this area have with the river is an important initiative.

Most people don’t consider where the water that runs into their homes comes from; we simply assume it’s clean and safe for all the activities that use water (cooking, bathing, keeping lawns lush and green, etc.). We actually are part of the Yadkin River Basin from a scientific point of view; we ourselves are 60% water, so we are impacted whether we realize it or not. As Brian shared, “It’s a ‘tap to toilet’ relationship; [but] we never think about where the water comes from or where it’s going.”

RECREATION There are recreational activities linked to the river that are not managed by Yadkin Riverkeeper; however, they are directly involved in ensuring clean water is available to all. The Yadkin River Basin is the second largest watershed in NC; continuing as the PeeDee River, the second largest on the East Coast. The Yadkin offers tremendous recreation opportunities (boating from kayaks to power boats, swimming, fishing, or duck hunting). Yakin Riverkeeper encourages

usage of local waters for exercise, picnics, and family time that build memories that last a lifetime.

ECONOMIC There are numerous outfitters along the river—for tubes, kayak, and canoes. These river activities provide local entrepreneurs with economic support and allow them to grow their businesses for local water enthusiasts, as well as tourists to the area.

ENVIRONMENTAL There are many environmental concerns that challenge keeping the Yadkin waters safe and clean: • Heavy snows or rain • Trash and debris • Erosion, especially in heavily farmed areas. The river is muddy due to 200 years of agriculture.

• Nutrient overloading, impacting the aquatic ecosystem • Unchecked Developmemnt— building roads, homes, or commercial development • Coal ash storage near the river.

Brian shared that there are many groups that devote time to voluntary clean-ups along the river. Some of these are by Yadkin Riverkeeper teams, individual groups, and nonprofit projects. As a community, we all have a stake in keeping our waters clean and safe.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS Yadkin Riverkeeper regularly goes into local schools (from elementary through college level) to share what the organization does to achieve the overall core goal of high-quality water.

at the Arboretum and Gardens at Tanglewood Park

into Tanglewood Park on a Wednesday morning and you will join a procession of volunteers heading to the Arboretum and Gardens at Tanglewood Park.

Tucked behind the Manor House, the Arboretum includes dozens of gardens that showcase a variety of plant life. Visitors will find flowers, shrubs, trees, and vegetables. The Arboretum showcases plants that grow well in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. On a walk through the Arboretum, home gardeners will find inspiration for how to use these plants in their landscapes.

The N.C. Cooperative Extension, Forsyth County Center, manages the Arboretum and Gardens. The Arboretum is an important part of the Extension’s horticulture education, led

by Arboretum Director and Extension Agent, Leslie Peck. The Extension offers a wide variety of classes for local gardeners, both at the Arboretum and in the community.

The N.C. Cooperative Extension relies on the help of Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers and a partnership with Forsyth County Parks and Recreation to maintain the Arboretum. Annually, Extension Master Gardener Volunteers contribute 4,000 hours of their time to assist at the gardens. Each week, volunteers arrive at the Arboretum, ready to help in a variety of ways.

Even through the coldest winter days, you’ll find volunteers in the Arboretum working hard to ensure it is a beautiful place for all to see.

In addition to planting, mulching, weeding, and other typical garden tasks, Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers are trained educators.

Master Gardener Volunteers organize the Arboretum Adult Education classes, offering timely gardening information all year long. Master Gardener Volunteers also teach hundreds of local third graders about plant science during the annual Youth Education field trip program.

In January, while many gardeners are inside daydreaming about their spring gardens, Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers head into the greenhouse at the Arboretum. Busy

volunteers plant seeds and transplant seedlings in preparation for the annual spring plant sale.

Funds raised at the plant sale are crucial to the Arboretum and its educational programs. Money earned at the sale contributes to the continued beautification of the gardens and makes it possible for the Extension to continue offering quality educational programs.

The Arboretum Plant Sale is a superb opportunity for all gardeners.

Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers who have selected and grown the plants are available to assist customers with their plant selections. Volunteers share their passion for gardening with customers and can offer advice on proper planting and maintenance of the plants.

The sale offers a wide variety of plants. Visit the greenhouse for annual flowers, herbs, and vegetables. In the nursery area, gardeners will find a selection of perennial plants, shrubs, and trees.

The Arboretum Plant Sale offers an excellent opportunity to purchase native plants and plants to attract pollinators and wildlife to the home landscape.

Community members are invited to attend the Arboretum Plant Sale on Friday and Saturday, May 3rd and 4th, 2019. The plant sale will be open from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM on both days of the sale. Early shoppers will enjoy the best selection. Sales are cash or check only.

OUTDOOR FUN Freedom Park—Beautiful spot to spend an afternoon. Tons of baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, and walking paths. There is a huge lake with a paved walk around it (great for roller skating, biking, etc.). Depending on the dates of your visit, check the website for the outdoor music series and movie nights! You can easily walk from here to the nature museum, which I will talk about below.

Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden—Check their calendar for a list of numerous events going on weekly. This venue sits on the banks of Lake Wylie and includes gorgeous gardens, fountains, and nature trails. They host a conservatory dedicated to the display of tropical plants and orchids, as well as a visitors’ pavilion and a garden store.

US National Whitewater Center—This is a full day’s worth of fun. Picture whitewater rafting, kayaking, paddleboarding, zip lines, ropes course and more. They also host plenty of outdoor concert events if you are staying overnight!

Little Sugar Creek Greenway—Beautiful greenway for strolling through the city.

It has a stream that little ones will love to play in and cross on the rocks. It is 20 miles long, so you’ll want to focus just on a few sections.

Carowinds—My son’s favorite amusement park of all time! He is a thrill-seeker, so the abundance of roller coasters keeps him happy for hours.

There is also a kids’ section for the younger ones, and a water park with many water slides and pools.

The Lazy 5 Ranch—This can be a day trip all its own. This animal park is located in Mooresville (north of Charlotte) and includes a day of fun on a wagon ride, or driving through with your car!

Romare Bearden Park—Get the best view of the Charlotte skyline from this park uptown. You will almost always find music and events at this venue, and if not, the fountains and scenery will be enough to entertain you for a quick visit and possible lunch outdoors! Kids love this spot.

EDUCATIONAL FUN ImaginOn— Not just any library. It is a 102,000 sq. ft. building, with professional theatre, educational programs, the “Studio i” makerspace, and many hands-on activities. A quote from their website: “ImaginOn brings stories to life through extraordinary experiences that challenge, inspire and excite young minds.” This is a great spot to visit if you want to ride the Light Rail.

Carolina Raptor Center—Environmental education center located in Huntersville.

They offer day experiences as well as educational programs.

Discovery Place Nature—Used to be called “The Nature Museum” and is right next to Freedom Park. The exhibits change often, but currently there is a butterfly pavilion, naturalist lab, and Fort Wild—an imaginative outdoor play area.

Discovery Place Kids—A children’s museum located in Huntersville, which is an easy stop on your way to or from Charlotte. This one is great for the littlest of your kids and will provide hours of entertainment and hands-on learning experiences.

Discovery Place Science—The original “Discovery Place,” located in uptown Charlotte. It is a fabulous kids’ museum with many hands-on learning experiences and imaginative play.

Levine Museum of the New South— The museum has hands-on, interactive exhibits and good learning experiences about civil rights.

ADDITIONAL IDEAS Light Rail—Kids love riding on the Light Rail. Officially called “LynxCharlotte,” this mode of transportation is fun to jump on board in the south Charlotte area and ride to an uptown destination.

Tickets are cheap and can be purchased at any station.

Epicentre—This uptown venue hosts restaurants, bars, shopping, bowling, movies, and more.

Blumenthal Performing Arts Center— Another great uptown venue where you can find amazing productions all year long. Check out their website to find family-friendly day time performances, shows geared more toward adults, and outdoor movie nights!

TopGolf Charlotte—This qualifies as sports, entertainment, and indoor/ outdoor fun all in one! You do need to purchase a membership to play, but the KidZone is free to sign up. Memberships start as low as $5 and give you access to play all the games, track whose golf ball scored and receive access to exclusive offers throughout the year. If your kids are like mine, they snack more than they eat at meals! It’s important to teach them healthy eating habits while they’re young.

Here are some delicious “clean” guilt-free snacks for the whole family to munch on!

SUPERFOOD ENERGY BARS INGREDIENTS: 1 cup dates ¼ cup honey cup quinoa (cooked) 2 Tbsp. butter (melted) cup cashew nuts cup sunflower seeds cup dried cranberries/cherries/apricots (optional) DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 F and line baking pan with baking paper.

2. Soak the dates in boiling water until slightly softened, for around 5 minutes, then blend the dates in a food processor until they reach a paste consistency.

3. Add remaining ingredients to the food processor and blend 40-60 seconds (not too long you want enough texture for it to hold together as a “bar” and to see the nuts and seeds.

4. Spoon the mixture onto the prepared baking pan. Push down to flatten the mixture evenly.

Bake for 25 minutes.

5. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Refrigerate for 15 minutes, then slice into bars.

6. Store in a lidded container or wrap individually and freeze for up to three weeks.

YOGURT BARK

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups fresh pineapple (diced) cup almond milk (unsweetened) 1 tsp. lemon juice (fresh) 1 tsp. lime juice (fresh) ¼ cup sweetener 1 scoop protein powder (optional)

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup plain organic Greek yogurt 1 tsp. honey ¾ cup blueberries ¼ cup pistachios or cashews, chopped choice of: chocolate chips, dried coconut shavings or granola

1. Place pineapple chunks into zipper freezer bags and freeze overnight or at least 2 hours. Let thaw slightly just before making by leaving out on counter about 15 minutes, so it’s not frozen rock solid and will separate easily.

1. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper.

2. Place all ingredients in a food processor or powerful blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Note: You may need to stop along the way and push chunks up top to the bottom or add a little more almond milk if your blender isn’t very powerful.

4. Serve immediately or place in freezer for 20-30 minutes before serving.

One Little Girl’s Legacy Continues to Help Others

A

lexandra “Alex” Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer, shortly before her first birthday. It was around the age of four that Alex told her parents that she wanted to set up a lemonade stand in her front yard with the plan of donating the money she raised to doctors who were working to find a cure for the disease that she and other children had. The first year of “Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” Alex raised $2,000 in just one day. As Alex fought her own battle, she continued to think of others walking the same path as she was, and had a lemonade stand every year. By 2004, at the age of eight, Alex’s stand and her courageous inspiration had raised more than $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that eventually took her life. To carry on the legacy of Alex, people from all over the world, moved by her story of giving, hold their own lemonade stands, donating the proceeds to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to support pediatric cancer research. Southwest Elementary School in Clemmons started their own “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” in 2011, with this year marking their 8th year of remembering a little girl who wanted to make a difference and help others.

Over the past seven years, students in the exceptional children’s classes at Southwest Elementary School have raised over $31,932 to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation with the help of their school, teachers, parents, friends, and community! This great charitable effort not only raises funds for a good cause, it also helps children with special needs with their communication and language skills. Maria Vernon, Speech-Language Pathologist at Southwest Elementary School said, “The focus of this event each year is on communication, and it gives our students with special needs in Southwest’s exceptional children’s classrooms (Preschool EC, Readiness, Core 1 and Core 2) a chance to shine and lead as they learn about helping others by working on their social skills, math, language, and functional communication skills. The students who happen to be exceptional are organizing, planning, and advertising for this event, sequencing

the steps to make the lemonade, practicing addition and subtraction with money, and learning how to use appropriate social skills and body language, while selling the lemonade for 50 cents a cup. We all need help sometimes, and our students selling lemonade learn so much about helping others, serving others with a smile, being leaders in our school and what community really looks like from the outpouring of support they receive. Our students work on the Three C’s—Community, Character, and Communication—as they sell lemonade, which goes along with our school’s theme. Each year the lesson that our students learn is that we all need help sometimes, and with this lemonade stand, they are helping other kids sick with cancer.

New Disc Golf Course at Sunrise UMC

f you aren’t familiar with Disc Golf, you should really check it out. This interesting sport has become quite popular since the 1970s, when it was invented. Like traditional golf, there are several holes on each course. The difference is there is no ball; instead, you throw a frisbee (like a disc) into a basket with chains. The scoring is also similar to golf, in that you get a stroke for each throw it takes to get into the basket, and the lowest score wins. There are several courses around the Triad, with the newest one opened in the spring of 2018 at Sunrise United Methodist Church, right here in Lewisville.

to hole. They took great care to take what the property offered and look at the trees to see how the course could flow. Working with designer Daniel Butner provided a lot of insight. Williams said, “I reached out to Daniel after learning he had designed another local course. He was able to help us envision how to map the course and also how to place the baskets.” Together they set up each hole to allow for different types of throws. “Some holes have one or two options, while others have several. It allows players to play based on what their ability is, but also makes sure that even a beginner can enjoy it.”

Sunrise UMC is a church with a passion for contemporary worship and a come-as-you-are philosophy. They have had a 14-acre property off of Lewisville-Clemmons Road since their inception 20 years ago. It is a very wooded property, and the church was never quite sure what to do with it. It just didn’t seem like it would be useful for very many things. A few years ago, while on a mission trip with the youth to Atlanta, church member Jimmy Williams had an idea. “We had taken the kids to a disc golf course I found about 5 minutes from where we were staying. A few of the other adults and I started talking and the idea arose for us to consider using the land at our church to build a course.” Williams has played disc golf for 25 years as a hobby. “After a year or more of thinking about the possibilities, then maybe six months or so to approve the cost and commit to the project, we were underway. That happened in December 2017, and we began constructing it in January 2018.”

The church considers it a part of community outreach. They want players and families to enjoy the course at their convenience. If they happen to want to come back to visit on Sunday for worship, of course, they are welcome to come back.

In the process of developing the course, they came to realize they were truly filling a need in this community. There are a lot of people who live in the Triad who love to play disc golf. There is only one public course in the Winston-Salem area. Other than that, you would have to travel 30 minutes to an hour to play. This course will provide another, closer option for a lot of players. But it will also, hopefully, inspire new people to give disc golf a try.

It’s a free course and you don’t have to be skilled to try it out.

Williams just hopes it will get people out to enjoy nature and maybe try something new.

“It’s not like you have to go out and try to break a course record; just come on out, enjoy a walk through nature, try something different and have some fun.”

The course itself was designed to be fun for all ages and skill levels. The nine-hole course starts in front of the church, with the first hole in a grassy field. The following eight holes wander through the woods behind the church. There is a map on the marquee near the first hole, and the course is marked to help players move from hole

aseball is the greatest American sport and Cooperstown, NY is where the sport comes to life. Not only is it the home to the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, it is also home to Cooperstown Dreams Park. This baseball facility hosts weekly tournaments, from June to August, for 12-and-under teams from around the country. Each week, 104 teams come together for an experience of a lifetime.

They practice, learn and play baseball with and against the other teams in the town know as baseball’s birthplace. This is a huge honor and a must-do for any kid who loves baseball. This year, the Grit Performance 12U travel baseball team is going to Cooperstown.

GRIT Performance (“Game Ready Intense Training”) is a travel baseball organization that hosts travel teams, a cross-training facility and after-school programs that focus on mental and physical development of the player. Unlike many other travel teams, their players come from WinstonSalem, Greensboro, Wilkesboro, Eden, Charlotte, and Raleigh. Players come from all around in order to try out to be a part of this organization, and that says something about who they are. The staff at GRIT comes to the table with years of experience. The coaches for the 12U team

include lead trainer Gavin Culler, who played Division One baseball at WinstonSalem State and Taylor Idol, who served in the United States Marine Corps after playing two years at Winston-Salem State.

GRIT is extremely excited to be taking the 12U team to Cooperstown this summer.

Director of Player Development, Jason Culler, said, “This is a trip of a lifetime for these players. They don’t just get to play baseball in this historic place; it’s an opportunity to meet players and connect with teams from all over the country. This is a week they will never, ever, forget.”

Players stay in Creams Park along with all the other teams. Each team has a trading pin made that players can trade and collect as souvenirs. Culler went on to say, “The pins are a big deal. The second they arrive at the village, they are off looking for players to trade pins with. It is a lot of fun.

The goal is to get one from every team and when they get home, we embroider a towel for them, place all the pins on it and have it framed. It’s a great keepsake.” This will be the second time a team from GRIT is going to Cooperstown; they also went in 2018.

They are hoping to make it an annual trip for the 12U team from here out.

Along with this amazing opportunity comes

a big expense. It will cost the team around $1,000 for each player and coach. “The $1,000 per player and coach is just the cost to participate and doesn’t include travel expenses, so we are currently looking for donations, sponsors and hosting a fundraiser to help offset the costs for the players. We are looking at a minimum of $15,000 for the team just to play,” said Culler. Raising funds for this team is really important. In addition to asking for donations and sponsorships, this year GRIT is having a raffle and fundraising event to help reduce the cost of this trip for the players. Tickets are on sale now for the raffle, with prizes that include a Benelli Shotgun and gift cards to Providence Restaurant and Mac and Nelli’s.

Jon Eric continued, “After four years or so, I decided to return to school to focus on it. I kept hearing about Randolph Community College and its excellent photography program, so I enrolled and earned an additional degree in commercial photography.”

As he was earning his degree in 2015, Jon Eric began a partnership with Forsyth Magazines and has been responsible for many photos that appear in print. “I love to tell people’s stories through pictures,” said Jon Eric. “My education has given me a technical foundation that I can apply creatively to a variety of purposes.”

Few

people have the opportunity to live out their passion. Jon Eric Johnson is one of those few.

Growing up in rural Ivanhoe, NC, Jon Eric had two loves—music and drawing. “Music was my first love,” he said. “I was accepted to the UNC-G music program, and I started majoring in music education. However, after a few semesters and discussions with a couple of my mentors, I realized that wasn’t the right career for me. I did minor in music.

“While I was in school,” he continued, “I revisited my artwork and began to develop an interest in graphic design. As part of my new art curriculum, I took a photography class and discovered my passion.”

Photography became a calling for Jon Eric.

His natural artistic abilities combined with an insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge has resulted in a successful career path with unlimited potential.

“I love that photography is a collaborative art form,” shared Jon Eric. “I am thankful that while I was a student at UNC-G, I was able to apprentice with, and later work for, a wonderful photography studio—Aesthetic Images—and through them, I was introduced to a variety of photo opportunities, including commercial photography.”

Indeed, Jon Eric has a great love for learning and is always eager to learn from others. “I’ve worked with some incredibly gifted and talented photographers in the last nine years, among them the legendary Jimmy Williams. I’ve learned so much from them—about both style and technique. Photography is an art in which one continues to learn, grow, and develop, even after years of experience.

While I work towards being a national photographer,” said Jon Eric, “I also see a need to close the gap between large scale commercial work and the needs of small business. I’m trying to bring the quality of high-caliber photography to the local business community.”

When asked what he loves most about photography, Jon Eric reemphasized his love for working with people, but he shared that he also loves to play with lighting. “There is a true science behind lighting. Yet, it’s still artistic, and there are so many different ways to use it. Combining those two elements is what makes photography fun for me,” revealed Jon Eric.

“I’ve been able to apply those elements quite a bit during my work with the Greensboro Fashion Week. I was the head photographer in 2018 and am again this year. We have had a lot of fun working to make interesting photography as well as adding a bit of drama through light-shaping and creative effects.”

“As I continue to build my portfolio, I’ve realized the need to sub-brand, and I recently created two additional websites,” noted Jon Eric. “In addition to JonEricJohnson.com, which is primarily a portfolio of fashion and dramatic portraiture, I’ve created JEJWeddings.com and JEJ.Photos to showcase my broader commercial work. I have been in this business since 2010, and one of my main goals is to create a cohesive style, no matter which genre I’m shooting.”

Baseball fever is back!

pring has arrived, and that can only mean one thing, baseball fever is in full swing! This season, residents of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County get to celebrate, along with our own WinstonSalem Dash, the 10th anniversary of Dash baseball at beautiful BB&T Ballpark.

The Dash have lots of exciting things planned for this season, with fan-favorite promotions, including Lowes Foods Family Sunday; Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday; Pups in the Park, presented by Handy and Handy Orthodontics; All-You-Can-Eat Nights, with free hot dogs and French fries (corn dogs will be available while supplies last); and postgame fireworks, after all Friday home games. Off the field, the Dash received further honors, including the Bob Freitas Award, recognizing the top overall operation at each level of the Minor Leagues

by Baseball America, and Ballpark Digest’s Honorable Mention for the 2018 Team of the Year. And to top it off, 2018 Manager Omar Vizquel was named the Carolina League’s Manager of the Year.

Lots of future stars were born from last season’s team, amazing fans with their dramatic comebacks, spectacular home runs, dominating performances, and highoctane baseball at its best.

LOCAL TRACK ATHLETE RUNNING TOWARD HIS DREAMS

If

you’re a parent, you have experienced waiting on your little one to walk, and then once they are walking on their own, it’s not long before they’re running.

Will Atkins, a junior at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, NC, was much like any other child, but when he was in the 7th grade, running took on a different meaning.

He decided with his new interest in running that he would run track, training by running cross country to get and stay in shape.

Since the age of 12, Will has been running and hasn’t looked back, recently adding quite an accomplishment: State Champion in the 1000m along with a trip to the national meet in New York City.

Will Atkins is an athlete in the rather solitary sport of running, yet he knows he is where he is today because of the support of his family. “I was born and raised in WinstonSalem, NC, and have gone to school in Clemmons my whole life. I have two wonderful parents, Robin and Chris Atkins, who are supportive and believe in me, and a sister, Meredith, who is my best friend. I started running competitively at Clemmons Middle School and I got more serious once I reached West Forsyth,” said Will. You may think that cross country running is only a warm-weather sport, but Will runs year around.

“I run cross country in the fall, then I run Winter Track, moving into Spring Track. Official competitions are generally held in the spring and summer, but most athletes train and run all year. My competitions have taken me all over the East Coast and North Carolina.

With the schedule that I have to keep, I put most of my spare time into running and competing to get better. My parents support me and sacrifice a lot so that I can do what I love. As you can imagine, we have to travel a lot to attend all the meets I compete in throughout the

year,” Will commented. Doing what he loves and all those hours and miles of running led Will to winning the 1000m in the State Championship held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem in February of this year.

“February 9th, 2019, was an amazing day. To win the state championship has been a dream of mine for some time now and I was extremely happy to accomplish that goal. Based on my time and performance in the state championship, I am currently ranked 3rd in the nation and was invited to a national meet in New York City. This was the second time I have qualified for the national meet. The next step in my training and competing will be to keep working hard, and try my best to have fun and enjoy everything that comes my way,” stated Will.

To make it to the national competition in NYC, Will, along with other runners from all over the country, had to meet a qualifying time, adding intensity to Will’s efforts.

To help Will with his costs in NYC, he raised funds with the help of a local restaurant.

“The first time I went to the national meet, my freshman year in high school, my dad thought that we could raise some money by selling PDQ cards to people, and it worked out well, so we partnered with PDQ again. We sold $10 gift cards for $6. Having the support of family and friends means so much to our family.”

Looking back at the season for Will has been so rewarding.

At the beginning of the season, Will made his goal cards for both events. He put for the 1000 his goal time of a 2:31 and that he wanted to be the State Champ and he met that goal.

For the 800 goal card, he put a time of 1:54.5 and that he wanted to go to NYC and run at Nationals, as well as medal in his event, and that is exactly what he did.

“The national competition was March 8th-11th, and I ran the 800m, placing 5th in the nation in the group, Emerging Elite, and had a personal record of 1:54.52. It was an amazing way to finish my indoor track season this year,” Will said.

CELEBRATING of Saving the Lives of Pets

If

you are lucky enough, you will have at least one pet that will come along and change your life completely. For Karen Fullerton, Founder and CEO of The Sergei Foundation, Inc., her red-and-white Siberian Husky, Sergei, did just that. He was the very special four-legged companion who was there by her side for life’s journey.

While it was Sergei’s life that made an impact on Karen, it was how Karen honored Sergei after his passing that has affected companion animals’ lives, as well as their owners, for the past ten years.

“I started The Sergei Foundation in 2009 after my husband and I lost Sergei. He had several health issues, but his loss was a shock,” states Karen. “Even though I knew we did all we could, I still felt so much guilt for not being able to save him.” The light for Karen that came out of the darkness of losing Sergei was a passion to help others who should not have to say that final goodbye too soon. She remembers thinking, “If I feel this bad after doing all that we could for him with veterinary care, imagine how people must feel who know there is a treatable solution for their dog or cat, but they just can’t afford it?”

Financially-driven euthanasia — when a decision is made because there are no financial options available for treatment — adds guilt as a stressor on top of grief during the already devastating time of having to say goodbye to a pet. “I wanted to alleviate that burden and lighten the load on the owner, along with helping to stop the unnecessary suffering of any pet,” states Karen.

The very next day after Sergei passed,

Karen Fullerton started her efforts for The Sergei Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit with the mission to save companion pets’ lives by coordinating care for sick and injured dogs or cats, providing families with resources to obtain life-saving veterinary treatment.

The Sergei Foundation helps coordinate veterinary medical treatment for a one-time accident or illness for a family-owned dog or cat. Applications for aid are accepted online via SergeiFoundation.org and must meet stated income and past pet-care parameters. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, the funds that are granted for these situations all come from donations. “I didn’t start with a trust fund or any financial backing. This ‘foundation’ was in name only, because of the mission of granting funding for these critical veterinary services,” Karen commented. To help raise these funds, The Sergei Foundation is hosting its 6th Annual Triad Dog Games, a fun day of everything and anything DOG!

Since the Triad Dog Games started in 2014, more than $150,000 has been raised from this annual event to help save pets’ lives. In 2018, The Sergei Foundation added a Dog Games event at the NC coast as well, and both are now listed on the NCDogGames. com website. As the event has expanded and changed over the years, the Triad event has had its home at the WinstonSalem Fairgrounds since 2016 and will be held on Saturday, May 18th, 2019, from 10am-3pm, rain or shine.

With a commitment to make a difference for people and their pets, Karen Fullerton has changed many a medical outcome that would have ended with the loss of the pet. “I am so grateful to everyone who saw value in our mission and supported our programs; they are truly the reason for the longevity and success of the organization.

GETTING to Know

people have a dream, but fewer actually make their dreams a reality. Opening a pizza shop has been a lifelong dream for Robert Wiley, and on October 5th, 2017, that dream came true.

“I have wanted to open a pizza place since I was a kid,” shared Robert. “I came close to opening one in my 20s, but the timing wasn’t right. I don’t know that I would have been successful in my 20s. I ended up working in the real estate industry. While I still love real estate and participate in it as a part of a successful real estate team, after 18 years, it was time to revisit that dream. I was finally in a position to do it, and thankfully, I have an incredible network of support around me.”

Pie Guys Pizza & More could easily be called the best-kept secret in the Triad. “We’ve been fortunate to have quickly developed a loyal following in the community,” shared Robert. “However, there has been some confusion about our address. We have a Winston-Salem address, but we are technically located in Clemmons in the Kinnamon Village Commons shopping center (and across from Food Lion).”

For those who have discovered Pie Guys Pizza & More, they know they’ve found something special. Charles and Katie Marsh are loyal customers of Pie Guys. “We absolutely love this pizza,” gushed Katie.

“It’s obvious by the taste that Robert has a great appreciation for the art of pizza making and has worked hard to hone his craft. It is, in our opinion, the best pizza we’ve ever had.”

Robert shared, “We believe the best pizza starts with great ingredients. We make our dough from scratch every day, and it’s aged 24 hours to have the best flavor. We make our own sauces, and when it comes to choosing vendors for our ingredients—we have chosen the best. Our cheese and meat vendors have a long history in making fine, Italian ingredients and they use old-world traditions for authentic Italian taste.”

Robert is a Winston-Salem native, but it’s clear his travels have influenced his love for pizza. “The pizza we make is New York style, but I love to visit pizzerias in other cities,” he shared. “I am always eager to try something new and see how we can incorporate other elements into our menu.”

The menu boasts a wide selection of options, including salads, wings, and subs. They have pizza available by the slice or as a whole.

They also have some gluten-free(ish) options! “We add the ‘ish,’ because for those who are highly sensitive to gluten, we want to be forthright. We cook all our pizzas in the same oven, and we’re diligent about using different cutting tools on our gluten-free pizzas. In addition to the gluten-free crust, Pie Guys & More will be offering a cauliflower crust pizza starting in May! “I’m not even a huge fan of cauliflower,” said Robert. “But this crust is amazing. I’m looking forward to sharing it with our customers!”

Delivery is also an option! “When we’re open, we have delivery service available,” said Robert. “For movie night or game night—we are just a phone call away and are happy to bring freshly baked pizza to our customers! Our delivery map is available on our website.”

Simple Cherry Cobbler

Sometimes we need things to simply be simple. Baking in particular can sometimes be taxing. With exact measurements and temperatures, a simple recipe can be just the trick when you’re in a pinch, or simply need something simple! This “Simple Cherry Cobbler” recipe can be completed in 45 minutes from start to finish, and doesn’t require fancy equipment. So kick up your feet and indulge your sweet tooth and maybe even your peace of mind.

INGREDIENTS:

2 21-ounce cherry pie fillings

1. Bring cherry pie filling to a boil on cooktop then remove from heat.

1 cup all-purpose flour 1¼ cup sugar, divided 1 cup whole milk 2 teaspoons baking powder /8 teaspoon salt

½ cup butter, melted

2. With a fork, mix flour, one cup sugar, milk, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl.

3. Pour melted butter into 6 one-cup ramekins or pie dishes. Pour flour mixture over butter. Add cherry filling; do not stir. Sprinkle remaining sugar over the top.

4. Bake at 400 degrees F. for 20 to 30 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
