is the month we celebrate moms and female caregivers of the universe! Whether you’re an actual mom to someone or just a maternal figure, we celebrate the selfless love and care you give to others. Can you imagine a world without moms No, and who wants to Moms are the glue that holds everything together and the ones who are there with a shoulder to cry on or pull you through the rough spots. So thanks to all you wonderful mothers and motherly women out there who give all year long! One day to honor you is certainly not enough!

The last Monday in May is also Memorial Day. A day set aside to remember and honor the members of military service who have died in the line of duty. Men and women who have defended our country and given us the freedoms we all enjoy. I have a nephew currently serving in the Marine Corps. and he is currently stationed in Japan. He and his battalion recently received a meritorious mast for completing the infantry jungle skills course in record time. We are so proud of you, Gabe!

as “the biggest party on two wheels,” this weekend event is not to be missed!

Scheduled for May 25th–28th, the collaboration of events offers something for everyone to enjoy.

During the four days, those in attendance will enjoy family-friendly entertainment; concerts from bands such as Blues Traveler, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, and the Muddy Creek Players; a community day, as well as one of the country’s most prestigious bicycling events.

All of the weekend’s bicycling events are free and open to the public, though there is a registration fee associated with the competitive events. General admission tickets for the concerts are available through Ticketmaster or at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds and Annex ticket office.

The concerts will be held at Bailey Park in downtown Winston-Salem.

The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is truly a remarkable event to have here in Winston-Salem. “The city of Winston-Salem is just the right size to support the bike race; too big or too small can be problematic for the race operations,” declared Race Director Ray Boden. “The city and local sponsors have been amazingly supportive of this event and that really helps us along on our path of

becoming the biggest and best cycling event in the country.

It also allows us to operate a familyfriendly music event for many people to come enjoy.”

The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic draws more than 400 cyclists from international cycling teams to compete professionally.

“The quality of the cycling is unparalleled outside of the big tour races,” asserted Boden. “Teams from all around the world come to Winston-Salem to see how great a race we have. For the road race, a team must be a national federation team from a foreign country, or at least a UCIregistered pro team. For the Criterium event held on Saturday night, teams must be registered as pros with USA Cycling or above. Saturday’s event with UCI and USA Cycling pro teams makes for some exciting racing.”

While the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is in its sixth year, the Gears & Guitars Music Festival is only in its third year. But the partnership between these two events is a perfect match! “The Gears & Guitars Music Festival is engineered to be a great value and a fun event,” explained Boden. “We think both the festival and the WinstonSalem Cycling Classic are must-see events.

As always, we hope for a safe, fun-filled event with great crowds. We want as many people as possible to attend, of course, the

paid events—but also the free ones. The more people who come out and support us the better, because we hope in the next few years to add more cycling categories, and also to scale the music event to higher levels and attendance.”

Saturday, May 26th, will feature the Empty Bowls 5K Criterium Run/Walk to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. There will also be a family “Walk & Roll” held on Monday, May 28th, during the same time as the road races.

This will allow those in attendance to bike, walk or skate down a section of Fifth Street with no traffic! For

nine years running, Clemmons Community Day has given the community fun, activities, vendors, and an opportunity to celebrate living in an awesome place. Organized by the LewisvilleClemmons Chamber of Commerce, Clemmons Community Day represents countless hours of time and talent expended by Chamber Director, Ginny Chase, and dozens of volunteers. The event is noted for its exceptional celebration of community spirit and community pride.

It all began in 2010, when local real estate expert, Jody Peske, and former Clemmons mayor, John Bost, shared a vision for a community festival that would unite neighbors, friends, and local business owners. Their vision has become an annual tradition that keeps growing and growing.

Scheduled for May 5th, 2018, Clemmons Community Day will once again return to the Jerry Long Family YMCA. This tremendous community partner is a perfect location for the 1600 expected attendees. With overflow parking planned at the Novant Health Clemmons Medical Center and complimentary shuttle service to help transport families to and from the festivities, it promises to be another great event.

Clemmons Community Day is held rain or shine. “Thankfully, we’ve historically had beautiful weather,” said Ginny. “But even on the occasion when it rained, we still had over 1500 visitors!”

Ginny continued, “People often expect a chamber event to be all suits-and-ties.

However, the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber is special. We are breaking down typical ideas and showing our community that our local entrepreneurs and leaders are passionate about our community. Clemmons Community Day gives us a chance to showcase that truth.”

150 vendors are expected at this year’s event and will share their businesses and talents with those who visit their tents. But in addition to vendors, Clemmons Community Day is designed to entertain the whole family. Ginny shared, “We love offering fun and games, including the popular rock wall for the kids to climb; a bounce house and other inflatables; train rides; and a DJ. With a DJ playing great music, and all sorts of food—there’s something for everyone! It’s a great way to showcase exactly what helps Lewisville and Clemmons stand apart.”

Clemmons Community Day founder, Jody Peske, agreed. “Clemmons Community Day is a labor of love for all of us, and it has been since day 1.

We are so grateful for the hours invested by our volunteers and civil servants who make this day come together.”

As always, admission is free to the event.

However, guests are encouraged to bring a donation to the Clemmons Food Pantry.

Clemmons Food Pantry always accepts canned and boxed food, but they are also in need of adult hygiene items.

Phase I treatment, when necessary in a younger child, allows patients to avoid the damage or impaction of teeth and jaw surgery if left until late adolescence. Digital radiographs are more detailed, with one-tenth the radiation of old film radiographs, and retainers are the ‘Invisalign’ type which hold teeth better and are significantly more comfortable to wear. Besides the GAC selfligating bracket which has the properties stated above, the team also uses ceramic or ‘clear’ brackets when there is an esthetic concern, and Invisalign’ when indicated.

more than 70 years, Ardmore Baptist Preschool has served children throughout Forsyth County.

Currently, 80 children are enrolled, ranging from three months to five-yearsold with a student/teacher ratio designed for individualized attention. Preschool Director Julie Sugg shared that the school’s teaching philosophy is based on a Reggioinspired model.

“Ardmore Baptist Preschool is one of the few in the area utilizing this approach,” said Julie. “In Reggio Emilia preschools, each child is viewed as capable, creative and intelligent. The job of the teacher is to support these qualities and to challenge students in appropriate ways.”

The Reggio Emilia approach begins with the idea that children use many different ways to express their understanding, thoughts and creativity. These different ways of thinking, exploring and learning

are expressed through different creative mediums such as drawing, sculpting, painting, music and drama. Classrooms are set up by age with a separate art studio and a dedicated teacher.

Students at Ardmore Baptist Preschool are focused on learning projects that give them the opportunity to be researchers. “These projects include real-life problemsolving techniques with their class as well as opportunities for creative thinking and exploration,” said Julie. “A project begins with our teachers observing and questioning our kids about their topic of interest; then questions, materials and opportunities are provided for the children to explore. Through our Reggio Emilia philosophy, our teachers watch, observe and listen to what our children are interested in. Then, they provide additional tools related to that topic to enhance their development.”

The children work together collaboratively and learn how to work as a team. Julie offered several examples, including a worm-study prompted by the children’s discovery of worms living under stumps. “The discovery triggered questions about how they lived, what they did and launched one of their projects in the classroom,” said Julie. “It was a learning experience for everyone in the group!”

When you step into a classroom at Ardmore Baptist Preschool, it feels like home.

Great attention is given to the environment and what we offer our children. There is natural light pouring in through the large windows and soft light from lamps.

Julie shared that each room is stocked with organic materials and “loose parts” to inspire creativity. “A sensory box with twigs, straw, dirt, pinecones and other textures can become a den for an animal or a place to play depending on the imagination of the children,” said Julie. “Rocks with numbers painted on them can be a means of building a wall or organizing a sequence of numbers.

Another class may use letters written on wooden disks for stacking or making a word – a child’s imagination is limitless. Loose parts can become whatever a child envisions and opens the door to creative thinking.”

There is a strong emphasis on using natural materials that can be used in more than one way that also encourages an interest in the world and exploration.

“We believe children need to be given the opportunity to learn through play,” said Julie. “It’s a student-led and teacherframed environment. Children learn through hands-on experiences.”

comments from the child as well as the teacher so that parents see what their child is working on. The hallways are a showcase of various art projects and group activities.

As with most preschools, Ardmore Baptist Preschool’s calendar closely lines up with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school calendar.

Registration for the upcoming school year began in February. For the 2018-2019 school year, classes will begin on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 (the day after Labor Day); the school year ends on Friday, May 31, 2019 (the Friday after Memorial Day). School hours are from 9am to noon with an optional lunch bunch (noon to 1pm).

Neighbors Helping Neighbors: EAT OUT AND HELP OUT ON MAY 1

For

almost three decades, Forsyth County residents have spent the first Tuesday in May eating out for a good cause.

Once again this year on Tuesday, May 1, families and friends from all corners of the county will dine out to support Crisis Control Ministry through Hope du Jour—a day of hope. Since 1991, Crisis Control’s Hope du Jour event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help individuals and families right here in Forsyth County.

Whether you live in Winston-Salem, Clemmons, or Kernersville, there are some 140 participating restaurants to choose from, all donating 10 of their sales on May 1 to Crisis Control.

Hope du Jour is first and foremost a fundraiser to help those in need and give support to the families in our community who are struggling to pay bills for basic needs. For the past 45 years, Crisis Control has assisted residents of Forsyth County who are experiencing a financial crisis with food, rent/mortgage, utilities, and prescription medication assistance.

Hope du Jour is the agency’s signature fundraising event with the proceeds used to support its mission: “To assist people in crisis to meet essential life needs and to become self-sufficient.” This volunteeroriented nonprofit operates client choice food pantries in Winston-Salem and Kernersville, and last year served nearly 5,000 families with food orders to last them for two weeks at a time. Overall, the agency’s programs served more than

15,000 individuals and families last year.

The list of participating restaurants is long, including both recently-opened and longtime favorite eateries, with something for every taste—breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

“Community is very important to us,” says Mary Haglund, owner of Mary’s Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem. “We believe in supporting those in our city who are in crisis whenever we can. Hope du Jour makes that an easy goal to achieve.” A complete list of participating eateries is available at hopedujour.org. The event website also allows you to find restaurants close to your location and provides links to restaurant websites, including phone numbers and directions.

Hope du Jour would not be possible without the commitment of the restaurants and diners who take part, as well as the event sponsors. Hope du Jour is a popular community tradition for several reasons, according to Patricia Murphy, Director of Special Events & Marketing at CCM: “It’s simple.

What to Do When Your Child Hates School

Not

much is quite as exhausting as the battle to get a child (or children) of almost any age up, dressed, fed, teeth and hair brushed and out the door in time for school each day.

Most parents would agree this is potentially one of the most stressful parts of their day, no matter if they have toddlers or teenagers. However, nothing is quite as heartbreaking or defeating as battling a child who sabotages getting ready in the morning because he or she hates school or brings down the endof-day conversations with tears and expressions of this hatred. It can be hard for parents to endure what feels like a never-ending dialogue of despising school/teachers/classes/homework/peer drama/etc. While loathing school is at times a rite of passage in adolescence, it should not be an ongoing, day-in-and day-out saga. So, what is there possibly to do when you are ready to pull your hair out and cry (or scream) into your morning cup of coffee?

Start by truly listening, hearing them out, and reading between the lines. Some ways to do that include: LOOK FOR PATTERNS: Be sure to work some strategic questions into your daily routine.

Ask simple, open-ended questions that don’t appear to pry too much, such as: “What was the best part of your day today ”; “What was the worst part of your day?”; “Who did you sit with at lunch today ” Over a little time, look for patterns in your child’s answers. Take note if their worst parts of the day tend to fall around certain times of day, subjects/teachers, peers, etc. If you are noticing repeating academic mentions (Ex.: “I failed my math test”; “I am never going to pass English”; “Mrs. So-andSo just doesn’t like me),- it is time to schedule a parent-teacher conference. If these same academic concerns have been going on for more than a few weeks/months and you have met with the teacher, it may be time to consider the next step of seeking additional assistance, which will be discussed below. If your child responds that everything is bad (cue your typical preteen/ teenage response) and they give you very few details, try responding with “Tell me one good thing that happened in your day, no matter how small.” Taking this approach can help your child try to focus on the positive parts of their day, no matter how small or insignificant.

DON’T DISMISS “FRIENDSHIP DRAMA”: No matter the age, as children develop, they discover new interests and learn to navigate the social climate of their schools.

Changes in friendships are common. While they are not terribly unusual, if your child seems to be hating school more than usual, 22 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAGA ZIN E.COM

but typically tells you they enjoy certain subjects or teachers, try to focus in on friendships. Try to understand that the social world of adolescence is not what it once was; it is not even what it was a decade ago. With social media and personal electronic devices, a child’s social world follows them far beyond the school walls and often feels impossible to escape. If you notice your child not wanting to be around friends they have had for a while, try to dig a little into why. If your child won’t talk to you about it, you may want to consider examining their social media/texting/electronic device friendships and activity. It may come as a surprise to some parents, but online friendships and interactions are even a concern in the elementary years when students interact through games such as Minecraft or Roblox. The best thing to do when changes in friendship are the cause of hating school, is to help coach your child through understanding that these changes, or walking away from a friendship, are sometimes okay. If their online activities seem to be the root of social concerns, help limit and monitor their interactions (or cut them when necessary).

Consider it an opportunity for your child to learn that these kinds of changes are a part of life, as they start to forge their own path, and help them navigate the best and most appropriate ways to get through.

YOUR BEST OFFENSE: TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS Sometimes the best defense is to consult with your child’s teachers and/or school counselor. If you have concerns about your child hating school, share them with teachers and the school counselor. Often, just sharing this tidbit of information can help teachers and school counselors put your child on their radar. Of course, every educator tries to give every student the individualized attention they need, but knowing your child is hating school can help them try to zero in on why. Use them as your offensive line, so that hopefully you’ll have to run very little defense.

CONSIDER PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE If all else seems to fail, consider seeking advice and assistance from your pediatrician, a psychologist, or other medical professional. There may be underlying concerns that you may not be able to address without assistance, such as depression, anxiety, underlying/undiagnosed learning disabilities, etc. These medical professionals can often help burrow down to the root of your child’s disdain for school and help provide guidance in working toward getting a plan in place for your family to move toward a more positive schooling experience.

CLEMMONS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Meet the new President/CEO – Sandi Scannelli

What is a philanthropic foundation? The Britannica. com definition is “a non-profit, non-governmental organization with assets provided by donors and managed by its own officials with income expended for socially useful purposes.” To be entrusted with the fiduciary responsibility of oversight of bequests donated to the community requires an individual with a heart for the community, a desire to help others in the near and long term, as well as a commitment to adhere to the intent of the donor’s wishes.

Clemmons Community Foundation, under the leadership of their new President/CEO, Sandi Scannelli, is poised for growth with the Foundation. Sandi brings a heart for service along with years of experience in the business world and service in the non-profit arena.

Sandi was raised in New Jersey and attended college in Virginia. During her career, she developed her own business, which she later sold. Sandi moved to Florida and helped her parents relocate from New Jersey to the warmer climate as well. While in Florida, she was offered a position as president/CEO of a Community Foundation and served in that role for nearly seven years. Sandi visited our area last spring and felt led to relocate here. After prayerful consideration, she put her Florida house on the market and moved to North Carolina last September. Over the years, Sandi has served in a consultant capacity with boards in other community service foundations and felt drawn toward work in the nonprofit sector. “There’s so much need in a community that lends itself to work with foundations—in educational enhancements, environmental endeavors, arts and culture, which are so important to entice growth from business and newcomer perspectives, and other ventures that can help a community achieve long-term growth.”

Sandi was one of two candidates selected by the Board of Clemmons Community Foundation for an in-person interview. To get a perspective of the selection process, there were 36 candidates in the beginning; the pool was narrowed down to 10, then six, and then the final two. Sandi had eight-plus years of experience serving in a president/CEO capacity with similarly sized Community Foundations. While both candidates were strong, Sandi’s experience and desire to make a meaningful, positive impact spoke to the Board and she was selected for the role of President/ CEO. Since she had already moved to the area, she was ready to start the transition to her new role and quite happy to call North Carolina home.

“Our goal is to grow a philanthropic resource for the area and to honor the intent of our donors by being good stewards of their bequests, distributing monies in thoughtful and careful, impactful ways,” explained Sandi. A listening program has begun to gain an understanding from the community regarding long-term transformational needs. “It’s rewarding to see what’s coming. The Clemmons Community Foundation is a vehicle for people who want to leave monies for special causes, and as partners, we help donors connect with the causes that most closely meet their expectations.”

John Bost, former Village of Clemmons mayor, real estate agent, and community leader, is working closely with Sandi as she transitions into her new role. John serves as the Chairman of the Clemmons Community Foundation Board of Directors. “Clemmons Community Foundation morphed from fundraising Rotary initiatives into a community catalyst to fund sustainable, non-profit needs. The Foundation has received three substantial, anonymous bequests over a four-year period. One goal that the Foundation is addressing involves educating potential donors regarding endowments and ways to poise the Foundation for the future needs of the community.”

Saturday, April 14th, over 1,000 participants gathered at Bailey Park in downtown Winston-Salem for the 22nd-annual Hospice Hope Run that supports the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter. The Hospice Hope Run is a family tradition for many, because they are there to honor, celebrate and remember their loved ones.

Bailey Park was a new venue this year so the participants got to enjoy an exciting new course as well as a fun-filled family picnic and entertainment for all. The Dan River Girls and Shiloh Hill entertained participants throughout the day.

Crystal Thomas, a Hope Run participant, shares her experience of the day saying, “I want to thank Hospice & Palliative CareCenter for the wonderful planning of this year’s Hope Run. Our team, Mawmaw’s Chickadees, has been participating for 7 years now and we loved the atmosphere at Bailey Park. The food was yummy and, with the wonderful weather that day,

we wanted to hang out all afternoon! It’s an honor to support such a compassionate organization, and we will be back next year.”

Ellen Coble, who works for the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, adds, “It’s very touching to see so many people coming out to support our mission. We know that many of the families who participate have lost a loved one and they are carrying those people in their hearts as they walk or run. It means the world to us to share in that experience. Because the funds we raise at the Hope Run go directly back into our services, it also means that we are able to continue offering our care and community services, like grief counseling, at no charge.

We had over 1,000 people join us at Bailey Park this year and we are grateful to our sponsors and to each participant who made it such a special day.”

All proceeds from Hospice’s signature fundraising event are used to help patients and their families receive the best possible end-of-life care, as well as a host of other services offered to the community—such as grief counseling.

A pastor who never fails to see exactly what’s on our hearts. Perhaps you came into our life at a time where we needed it most, but didn’t even know it. Life may have had you replace the mother we never had and fill a hole that needed filling so deeply with your nurturing and love. You could be our best friend’s mom or our even our step-mother—ready at a moment’s notice to make us laugh, or let us vent.

Teaching the Life Lessons We Need Most Learning to navigate the seasons in life that aren’t always easy, and celebrating the ones that deserve our happiness has taken place, in part, because of you and the role model you’ve been. You’ve made us understand the impact that one woman can have on another and taught us the importance of being in that same role for someone else in our life who needs us.

Being There the Way That Only You Can You stepped up and you stepped into our lives without any hesitation, even when we weren’t yours to mother. 2010, Joe Readling and his wife, Anna, have called South Africa their home.

While the beauty of the land is one thing, what truly drew the Readlings in was God’s calling for them to become missionaries.

“We are all missionaries. God has called each of us to share His gospel wherever we are. God called my wife to the foreign mission field when she was 17, while in Kenya, Africa. She continued her education while progressing in that direction. God directly called me in April 2008,” explained Joe. The Readlings always knew they wanted to spread God’s message on the mission field, but didn’t quite know where He wanted them to go. After spending time praying about the mission field, Joe specifically asked God to send someone to tell him where to go. Just two days later, Joe received the message he was looking for.

“Someone we knew and had no idea what I had been praying about, hesitantly approached us and said the Holy Spirit asked them to tell us to go to South Africa,” explained Joe. “So, we did.”

Currently, the Readlings live in Hani Park, a settlement in Welkom, South Africa and a community rooted in African traditionalism and a dark magic culture. They work with the organization “Hope Haven,” of South Africa. According to Joe, their mission is “to reach the adults, teenagers, and children of Hani Park where they are, in their homes, their schools, and their communities, with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and see them come to know Him as their personal Savior.”

“With the dark magic culture, many people believe those things carry power and protection. Our ultimate goal is to train nationals to fulfill their roles in the local church. We disciple, train, and equip them to impact their native people, sharing the gospel and furthering the Kingdom. We love the Lord and we are so humbled that He would allow us the privilege to serve Him in South Africa,” Joe stated.

In Hani Park, Joe serves as a pastor and Anna heads up the women’s ministry at a local church, which they founded. Part of their work includes discipleship, mentoring, and helping people learn new skills to attain and keep work. In addition, they help kids and teenagers in school to complete and further their education, giving them the opportunity to end the poverty their family has faced for many years. Lastly, the Readlings’ church provides housing, food, and clothing.

“It’s been an incredible experience seeing God show them His power as He sets them free. We love the Lord and He is our everything. We do whatever we can to build relationships with people, so we can share the good news of Jesus with them,” maintained Joe. Every three years, their visas expire and they come back to the United States for a little while. During their time in the States, the couple spreads their message and the importance of missionary work in South Africa.

“This is really the first time we have been in the States in seven years.

While here, we speak at churches. Recently, Anna and I have turned a lot of our attention to individuals,” commented Joe. “Maybe people we know well or someone that’s just heard about what we are doing from someone else. God is giving lots of open doors and bringing new financial partners to our team.”

According to Joe, their missions are about 70 supported. The Readlings are always seeking individuals who are interested in learning about their work. Every year, funds are raised through a yearly golf tournament. A new event, an annual education banquet, will be starting in spring 2019.

The Readlings are sent to the mission field by Christian Bible Fellowship in Gibsonville and have strong ties to True Gospel Baptist Church in Madison. Communities, families, and individuals can support them through prayer, becoming monthly supporters of Hope Haven, donating items for the ministry, or by coming on a mission trip and working firsthand with the couple.

“Jesus Christ gave His all for us and that is what we want—to give our all for Him. Even if that means moving to Africa and telling people about Him or living right here in the United States and sharing His message that way. A LEARNING TOOL:

Teaching Children about Harmful Animals

Eyes wide-open,

fascinated and listening, our children, even before they can utter the first word, are interested in the animals, insects, reptiles, and birds which occupy our world. We point, and combine our teachable lesson with facts.

Through the tone of our voice, our child understands some creatures come with rules and warnings!

THE GREATEST LESSON: Walking Outdoors I can still hear my son say, “Oohhh!” in curious intonations when swishing his feet through leaves, or desiring to turn over almost every rock. He rarely lingered, unlike his sister, who often stopped to admire a new object flittering, flying, or inanimate. Children want the freedom to stop and investigate at their own pace. Without even knowing it, they are learning. Encourage children to repeat the name of the creature, if possible. With age, children who can identify objects both good and bad with a specific name and recognize distinct colors can take the education to the next level: What to do when encountering an unknown animal?

LESSON ONE: Keep Calm Animals, insects and birds often lurk undetected in their hiding places, unless the game becomes hide and seek. While the immediate human instinct in finding a black snake or grass spider is to flee and quickly, such a reaction can often scare your child away from any future outdoor experiences. And frighten the snake and spider, too! Help children understand what may be living in a certain location, not to avoid it, but to encourage caution and good judgment.

• DOGS: Most adults and children cannot detect a dog’s disposition. A tail wag is not necessarily evidence of friendliness, nor is size or breed, especially if the dog is similar to the family dog. Permission is always the first step to greeting. Teach children always to treat animals calmly and with gentleness. And, never hurt, tease, frighten, surprise or corner an animal.

• CATS: A great conversation involves teaching the difference between wild and domestic animals. While wild animals are not always ferocious, they are wild. Another key term to teach is “feral” in connection with cats. Children should learn not to approach a feral cat and to tell an adult where they saw it.

• GEESE: In most children’s stories, there usually is a goose who achieves friendship with the other barnyard animals. A kind character indeed in a story, geese are not friendly animals, especially if they are caring for young goslings. In fact, the gander, the male, will intimidate anyone by flapping his wings, honking, following for great distances, and attacking.

The best solution is to admire from a distance, and remind children never to roll down their car window if traveling near a gaggle of geese.

BEES AND WASPS: Not all bees are heard first. Sometimes, a swarm can be in an undetected location such as a fruit tree, garden, underground or in tall grasses. Insect repellants can help deter bites and stings for children over one year old; however, the best solution is to offer to distinguish between a variety of bees and wasps.

Children should never agitate bees. It is best to not swat, but simply to avoid confrontation. In 95 of cases, stings come from honeybees and yellow jackets.

• SNAKES: It’s rare a child will come across a snake when walking through the yard or a populated location. Even in the woods, snakes want to be hidden and left alone. Teach children to leave the area at once if they see a snake and not try to prod or kill the snake with a stick or rock.

Signs of wildlife are everywhere. We can hear the call of crows and birds, the odd scream of a human, indicating a coyote may be near, and the evidence of animal tracks and feces. Every sign, whether positive or negative, is a teachable opportunity to learn more about recognizing tracks, when not to touch, and reminders of good hygiene practices.

Wonderful books can further your child’s exploration by learning facts about our wildlife. By teaching our young about the wonders and dangers, we can further their education while keeping them alert, and safe!

It Almost Didn’t Happen Thankfully, these children benefited from enrollment in Family Services’ Head Start and Early Head Start child development programs—and from services that helped their parents set goals and work toward self-sufficiency.

With a solid developmental foundation and a more secure family life, Isabella, Ethan, and Ellie and other disadvantaged Forsyth County children are now ready to succeed in school—and in life.

And that’s not all, Four-year-olds from our child development programs are entering kindergarten every fall, prepared to learn and eager to succeed.

Our three-year-olds are developing the social and emotional skills that will help them overcome the effects of traumatic experiences, so they can begin to thrive.

In fact, because of limited funding and capacity only 1,200 out of 2,600 four-year-olds who are eligible for publicly funded quality Pre-K programs are enrolled.

Science has proven that if left unaddressed in young children, these conditions will lead to emotional, social, behavioral, health and learning problems which can follow them into adulthood.

Too many local children are on waiting lists for our services.

Our community must work together to elevate more vulnerable children and their families to reach their full potential.

Why Because studies show that the first five years of life are a time of rapid brain development—a critical, once-only window of opportunity for developing reasoning, self-control and other skills that are essential for success in life.

orklifts moving crates of rescued blueberries are beeping in the distance. Volunteers chat while stacking boxes of North Carolina-grown sweet potatoes. A door to the warehouse swings open, and Clyde’s voice can be heard above all else.

“How we doing?” comes his familiar, jovial greeting, imbued with a slight Southern drawl.

Clyde Fitzgerald’s highly successful corporate career took him all around the world, but all roads led him back to the American South. Born in Florida, raised in Georgia, it is the North Carolina Piedmont that Clyde calls home. Here, beautiful rolling hills and fertile land produce great bounty— bounty such as these sweet potatoes and blueberries.

Since its opening 36 years ago, Clyde has worked to share this bounty through Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. From volunteer to board member to coming out of his first retirement to serve at the helm of the organization for the last ten years, Clyde has been the Food Bank’s biggest champion, calling on each of us to take inventory of our assets, skills, and passions and apply them to the cause of fighting hunger.

Over the years, Clyde has become a leading authority on hunger in Northwest North Carolina, speaking to thousands of audiences, giving hundreds of tours of the Food Bank, speaking on local news stations, radio programs and more.

Clyde can tell you about hunger, about food waste, and about the economic woes of local communities. But as he talks, Clyde always returns to one particular story: the young boy who told him that he was hungry because it was not his day to eat.

Every day should be a day for children to eat. It was the plight of local children that called Clyde to Second Harvest. Thus, as his retirement from the Food Bank approaches, we thought it appropriate to allow children to ask him a few questions.

On a sunny Spring afternoon, Clyde met up with some young correspondents—Nadia, Quinn and Auggie—at the local library, pulled up a chair, smiled, and said: “How we doing?”

HERE IS WHAT THEY WANTED TO KNOW: Nadia: What is a food bank?

Clyde: A food bank gathers a lot of food from a lot of places and gives it to food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters so they can give it to people who need it.

Quinn: What do you do at the Food Bank?

Clyde: Well, my official title is “Chief Executive Officer.” What that really means is that I get to work with some great people every day. It’s like in sports: there’s a head coach, but there are assistant coaches, because the main coach can’t win a game all by himself.

Clyde: Most of the food at Second Harvest is from food drives (which is why I’m always asking people to donate food!) and from our retail grocery store partners. We also have to raise money so we can buy the healthiest food we can. Our Triad Community Kitchen is where students make meals right in our own kitchen for our partners to serve in soup kitchens and at summer meals sites for kids…so we have that food, too.

Auggie: Is Second Harvest the biggest Food Bank in America?

Clyde, laughing: Well, no, we aren’t the biggest one in America, but I think we are the best one! We help over 300,000 people every year and that’s a lot of people. Have you ever been to the Wake Forest football stadium? Think about that stadium being filled 10 times...that’s how many people we serve!

Nadia: Do a lot of kids have to get food from the food bank?

Clyde: Yes, they do.

Unfortunately there are a lot of boys and girls who need help with food. In fact, one third of the people we serve are children. We don’t think anyone should be hungry, but especially not a child. We think kids should eat only what is really good for you. Not the snacks, but the healthy proteins, vegetables, fruits, grains and milk. Your parents tell you that, right? We feel the same about the children we serve.

Auggie: Do you ever get to drive the trucks?

Clyde: You know, I wish I did! I have a driver’s license to drive my car, but not to drive a big truck like that. The men and women who drive our ten big trucks have a very special license. I get to look at the trucks and sometimes ride in them, but I’m not allowed to drive them.

Quinn: Why is the Food Bank so big?

Clyde: It’s big because a lot of people need our help. We cover 18 counties and that’s a lot of people and a lot of places. We need that kind of big space to handle all the food—to bring it in, to store it safely, to get it back out to the people who need it. We actually have several buildings.

Nadia: Where does all the food come from?

Auggie: I eat in the cafeteria at my school. Do you ever eat at a school?

Clyde: When I was in school—which was a long time ago—I ate at school every day. Your school has free breakfast and lunch, right? [Auggie nods]. I’m very glad that your school does that because children need healthy food to not only focus on learning, but to play a little, right? It’s not okay for you to have that hungry feeling in your stomach when you are trying to learn.

Nadia: Some of the kids at my school get backpacks with food in them. Is that from the Food Bank?

Clyde: A lot of the backpack programs in schools are ones that Second Harvest works with! We have about 114 backpack programs.

But I have now come to learn that there are actually children who are hungry who are right here in our community.

At Second Harvest, we try to prevent food waste by collecting good food that would otherwise go to the landfill.

Auggie: What exactly is retirement?

Clyde: Well, first of all, you usually have to be old like me, but it’s when you leave a job that you’ve had for a long, long time.

Auggie: Will you miss the Food Bank?

Clyde: Thank you for making that food donation—it’s really it’s a happy situation. To know we can be a small part important. And that’s a very good question. What we do is of helping others through a hard time in their life...that we bring it to the Food Bank. Then we look at every single is always important. When I leave, I’ll give up a title, box and can and bottle and bag of food to make sure it’s but I’ll never give up my passion for feeding people, safe to eat. We look at the little tiny writing on the package especially children. that says “Best if Used By….” Now, it doesn’t mean it’s not safe if it is past that date, but we have all the information to Auggie [pulling out a crumpled up dollar bill]: If I gave know how much longer it is good—so we check that. If it’s you a dollar, would that help? safe to eat, we’ll distribute it.

Nadia: Can the Food Bank feed everyone who is hungry?

Clyde: I wish we could. But we can’t. We try as hard as we can to get food to everyone who needs it, but we know we aren’t reaching everyone.

Nadia: Is there not enough food in North Carolina for everyone to eat?

Clyde: You know, there is enough food, but it’s not always in the right place. I know there is enough food for every man, woman, and child in America, in North Carolina, and in our city. But not everyone has it, because it’s hard for them to afford it in a store—or sometimes it is hard even to get to a store if they don’t have a car or the grocery store is far away from where they live.

Quinn: Do you eat all the food on your plate?

Clyde: I try to! When I was your age, my parents would say: “Clean your plate because children in China are starving.”

Clyde: A dollar is a fantastic gift! With this one dollar our food bank can provide 7 meals! A lot of people say: “I sure wish I could help, but I don’t have much to give.” And I always say: “A dollar is very important, because of what our food bank can do with it.” So, yes, it makes a lot of difference for someone in need. It’s always the right time to help someone in need.

Nadia: Do you think by the time we are adults, things will be different?

Clyde: I hope so, Nadia. Y’all can make a great difference in our world and in our State in a lot of ways. I think the three of you and all your friends can make a difference.

Hunger is a solvable problem. I think you will say “everyone should eat!” And because I see the three of you want that to happen, I believe that it will happen. I don’t know if I will be around for it, so I am going to thank you for that right now.

Spreading the LOVE for Reading Throughout the Community

children have more difficulty than others with literacy skills. For those who struggle with reading, access to direct and explicit literacy instruction is key. In fact, research shows that a structured literacy approach is the best practice for children who struggle with reading and is an approach that works to teach all children to read. From 2001 to 2015, the Augustine Literacy Project® trained volunteers to tutor low-income children with reading difficulties one-onone. In 2014, the Winston-Salem chapter’s board expanded the group’s mission and added a new entity – READWS, which stands for “Read•Write•Spell.”

According to Marketing and Development Director Esharan Monroe-Johnson, READWS’ current mission is to “…reach, teach and advocate for struggling readers by training tutors, educators and parents to use the research-based best practices of a multisensory, structured literacy approach.”

“We focus on students who are at an economic disadvantage,” said MonroeJohnson. “About 47 of the third graders in Forsyth County didn’t pass their end-of-grade reading exam last year.

Unfortunately, children do not outgrow poor reading. Seventy-four percent of poor readers in third grade are still poor readers in ninth grade. Low literacy rates are linked to incarceration, teen pregnancy and economic instability.”

Monroe-Johnson shared other statistics, including: 48 of the children in the WinstonSalem/Forsyth County School System can’t read proficiently.

• 3/5 of the children in our area are not college and career ready.

Only 38.2 of African-American third graders and 32.8 of Hispanic third graders are reading proficiently,

“Forsyth County is experiencing a literacy crisis, and the achievement gap between white, black and Hispanic children is wide.

In a time of innovation, expansion and growth, the most vulnerable groups in our city are being left behind and left out,” said Monroe-Johnson.

To help change these startling statistics, READWS does this through three programs.

“The Augustine Literacy Project® trains volunteers to tutor children and teenagers,” said Monroe-Johnson. “Our tutors provide direct and explicit literacy instruction to students twice a week for 4560 minutes. Currently, there are more than 150 tutors serving students in 35 schools throughout Forsyth County. Next, we have the Reading Party. This is a parent education program that is a free, parentoriented seminar. During this time, we teach simple and effective multi-sensory strategies to parents and their children in a fun, laid-back atmosphere. Lastly, we have our Educator Academy, where we sponsor free and low-cost training for educators using the Orton-Gillingham structured literacy approach. In summer 2017, we trained 58 educators from Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools.”

Augustine Literacy Project® serves students who are at least one grade level behind in reading and not already being served through the Exceptional Children’s (EC) program. All of our students qualify for free or reduced cost lunch. For the Reading Party program, all parents and their children ages four to six qualify, and all public-school educators in Forsyth County can partake in the Educator Academy.

READWS has had multiple achievements in helping students grow in their reading abilities. In the 2016-2017 school year, students grew 1.2 grade levels (on average) in reading skills, and 100 of the students improved in letters, digraphs and sight words. Monroe-Johnson mentioned that since the beginning of the educator training, more than 100 educators have been trained to provide effective literacy instruction for more than 1,800 students.

READWS needs volunteers to serve as tutors to public-school students and to help with Reading Parties. Two 7-day Tutor Training classes are scheduled for fall starting Sept. 4 and Oct. 2. An information session for people interested in learning more about the program will be held on Monday, May 14 from 1:30 - 2:30 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 520 Summit Street, 27101. “Literacy is a game changer, and literacy skills are key predictors of future educational attainment and economic stability,” said Monroe-Johnson. “All children in our county deserve the opportunity to succeed. My favorite part about working at READWS is being a part of an organization that works to positively impact the lives of the most vulnerable children in our community by providing them with the necessary literacy skills to have a successful future.”

7th-Annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand:

“When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade”

S

ometimes the littlest among us make the biggest impact. Such is the case of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, an 8-year old girl who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer, just before her first birthday.

As Alex battled the disease, she was wise beyond her 4 years, when she told her parents that she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand, with the plan of donating the money raised to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” held with the help of her older brother, Patrick, raised an amazing $2,000 in one day. While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. By2004, at the age of eight, her stand and inspiration had raised more than $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that was to take her life. Since 2011, Southwest Elementary School has carried on the legacy of caring, and taking the lemons that you get with life and making lemonade, as Alex did. This year marks

the 7th-Annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand, with the students’ participation and community support growing each year.

Exceptional Children Doing Exceptional Things “During the 2011–2012 school year at Southwest Elementary School, the speech-language pathologists at the school had an idea to host Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The students in the Exceptional Children’s classes would work on their communication skills while helping Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation fight pediatric cancer. That first year the students raised $706 to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Each year, student participation grows, as does the community involvement. During the previous years, Champion/Hanes Brands supplied T-shirts for students, silent auction items were donated by those in the community, invitations were designed

by Tammy Mutter, photography was by Tracy Krell, and PD donated10 gallons of fresh lemonade and cups. Over the past 6 years, we have raised $21,480, and we hope to match what we raised last year, which was $7,000,” related Maria Vernon, Speech-Language Pathologist at Southwest Elementary School.

More than Just Squeezing Lemons There is much more in the preparation for an Alex’s Lemonade Stand than getting the lemonade ready.

“Our children with special needs in EC-PK 3, EC-PK 4, Readiness (K-1st), Core 1 (2nd-3rd) and Core 2 (4th-5th) start working with a speech-language pathologist on the communication exchange necessary to sell the lemonade 6 weeks before the lemonade stand. The students are working on the social skills, planning, sequencing, turn-taking, and communication skills needed to sell the lemonade.

excited about planning and participating each year.

This lemonade stand is possible because our amazing EC teachers and students, parents and community, have donated silent auction items and lots of support for our school and students that we are so grateful for,” commented Maria. Beyond the monies raised through this event, Alex’s Lemonade Stand teaches students the importance of helping others, “one cup at a time.” Small things can make a big difference! “Boys and girls in the Exceptional Children’s program at Southwest Elementary learn about helping others in need while working on academic, social, and communication skills needed to sell lemonade. We want our students to understand why we support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Our students read Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand, a book about Alex’s life, and we discuss what lessons we can lean from Alex and her dream to help others. By helping other kids sick with cancer, it’s a lesson that we all need to understand—which is, ‘We all need help sometimes.’

Get Messy, Play, and Learn at Kaleideum Camps This Summer

Summer’s right around the corner! And,

with the change of season and end of school, comes the promise of all sorts of adventures—beach trips, lazy days by the pool, family fun at the baseball field, and, of course, that cherished childhood activity… summer camp. Attending a day camp or residential program allows young people the opportunity to delve more deeply into topics which already interest them, and perhaps to discover and explore brand new passions.

Kaleideum, which was formed in 2016 by the merger of the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks, will offer a wide variety of both half-day and full-day camps covering themes such as art, music, technology and design, science, and theatre, so there’s sure to be something to interest everyone.

Camps are available for children age 3 through rising sixth graders and will take place at both locations: Kaleideum Downtown (formerly the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem) and Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks). “Having two campuses has allowed us to expand what were already popular camp programs at both places,” said Elizabeth Dampier, Kaleideum Executive Director, “and we are also offering new age-groupings and additional programming options this summer to provide a wider range of choices for the community.”

Camps begin June 11th and run through August 24th. Those for younger students take place for a half day (9 am-12:30 pm), while others are full-day (9 am-4 pm), and many camps offer single-day options, allowing campers to attend for only a day or two, rather than an entire week. This is a great “ease-in” option for youngsters who may be nervous about attending a whole week of camp, and it also helps accommodate vacation schedules, as well as family budgets. Before-care is available at Kaleideum North, beginning at 8 am, and after-care is available (for full-day campers) at both locations until 5:30 pm.

“All of our camps are very interactive and hands-on,” explains Dampier, “and, in addition to experiments, guest speakers, crafts, and other projects related to the camp theme, all of them also allow time to explore the museum exhibits, play outside, get to know other campers, and much more.”

Perhaps one seasoned camper put it best. “I love going to camp at Kaleideum. We get to do fun things and make cool stuff. Plus, one of my best friends is someone I met at camp six years ago. We’re still friends and go to camp together every summer!”

Summer Camp Packing Essentials

You’ve

signed your child up for sleepover summer camp and everyone is excited. Now the looming question hits you. What do they need to pack? Packing for an overnight camp can be a daunting task. However, follow these few simple suggestions and checklist and you will breeze through it!

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute Most camps will send you a list of suggested items to pack. In addition, items they do not want brought to camp.

Some camps may require certain types of soaps and chemical-free bug sprays that will not harm the environment. If you don’t plan, you may be rushing the night before looking for specific items. Alternatively, you may have questions that you don’t have time to ask. Save yourself from stress by buying or setting aside things to pack as early as possible.

Use a Packing List One of the best ways to make sure you don’t forget anything is by using a checklist. Here is a basic list of stay-over camp packing needs. Again, double check the camp information about any specific items you may need.

Keep in mind, kids often lose things.

Hence, I suggest packing items that you don’t mind losing, being left behind or ruined. It is also a great idea to label all of your kid’s clothes and other items. Pack a black and silver Sharpie in their bag in case something else needs labeling. Silver works better on darker items.

Optimize space in their suitcase by rolling clothes instead of folding. Pack smaller items inside larger ones. Additionally, to protect from spills, pack toiletries in Ziploc bags.

Leave Technology at Home!

There is no need for your child to bring their phone with them. The camp has phones if a homesick call needs to be made or in case of an emergency.

Cell phones and tablets will only distract them from the true fun they should be having at camp. Moreover, it could keep them from making new friends. This is due to their trying to stay constantly connected to friends and family back home.

More importantly, you didn’t spend your money sending them to camp to play video games or surf social media sites.

Don’t Worry Try not to worry! You have packed and prepared them the best you could. Now it is time for them to show you they can handle the independence. Yet, here are a few more suggestions to ease your mind.

Pack in their luggage an inventory list of everything they brought. That way there is a better chance of “most” everything making it back home.

At least we hope, right? Another extra, you could hide little “Thinking of you” notes in their suitcase.

Periodically they will come across one and know you are always thinking of them.

Now sit back and enjoy your quiet, peaceful time while you can!

Mother’s Day right around the corner on May 13th, it’s the perfect time of year to celebrate the special women around us! Helping a child create a one-of-a-kind handmade gift is not only fun for them, but something to treasure. After all, who wouldn’t love an adorable little something from an adorable little someone?

Childhood goes by so quickly, so having a keepsake made by them is special as the years go on. I’ve put together a few simple and inexpensive DIY Mother’s Day gift ideas for kids of all ages. Take a look through the list and create the perfect present for the special women in your child’s life! Even if that women’s you!

0–5 YEARS OLD

PROJECT: Child’s Hand Ceramic Coaster TIPS: More often than not, little ones need some help putting together a special surprise, so choosing something like this personalized coaster with little effort, but big impact, is a great way to go. Also remember, kids this young tend to be wiggle worms, so be sure to look out for any spills or messes, and have baby wipes nearby for easy clean-up.

SUPPLIES: Ceramic tile, black permanent marker, acrylic paint in your color of choice, foam paint brush, felt or cork board, scissors and glue.

STEPS: 1. Simply pour a large dollop of paint out onto a paper plate and place the child’s hand lightly into the paint; 2. Press the hand firmly onto the face of the tile, to make a painted handprint; 3. Allow to dry; 4. Using the marker, write the phrase “A Child’s Hand touches a Mother’s Heart” centered on the tile, over the dry handprint; 5. Cut and glue the felt or cork board to the bottom of the tile to make it into a finished coaster.

5–10 YEARS OLD

PROJECT: Splatter Paint Flower Pot with Mums TIPS: Kid’s this age have an awesome sense of creativity, appreciate color and still enjoy getting messy with their crafts.

Pick out something you know they’ll enjoy that allows for plenty of creative expression and handson making.

SUPPLIES: Terra Cotta/clay pot (any size), paint in multiple colors, paint brush, paper plate, soil, mums (for planting) STEPS: 1. Place clay pot upside down on newspaper or wax paper to help with mess from paint drippings; 2. Dip paint brush in paint colors one by one and flick the brush at the pot allowing paint to fly off and “splatter” the pot; 3. Continue until desired design is completed (Let them have fun with the patterns!); 4. Paint the year and child’s name on the bottom side of the pot; 5. Allow to dry, then face right side up; 6. Plant the mums in the soil; 7. Leave in the sunlight and water slightly until ready to gift.

PROJECT: Transfer Photo Wood Sign TIPS: While you may want them to stay small forever, bigger kids tend to become a little more concerned over the “professionalism” and skill involved with their handmade gift endeavors!

Choose a gift that lets them express themselves and has a nice polished look at the end they feel proud of.

SUPPLIES: Laser-printed copy of your favorite photo on copy paper; small cut of wood; Mod-Podge photo-transfer medium OR gel medium; foam paint brush; sponge.

STEPS: 1. Start by cutting your wood piece down to size for your child or having Lowes/Home Depot slice it down to size for free or go to your local craft store for a pre-cut piece; 2. Print your photo using a laser printer, in a size that complements your wood piece; 3. Cover the side of the wood your photo will go on with Mod-Podge using the paint brush.

4. Place photo, picture side down on the wood, firmly smoothing out any bubbles; 5. Let it dry for 4 hours; 6. Wipe away any excess gel that might be present; 7. Wet the sponge with warm water, gently rubbing in circles until all the paper has been removed; 8. Once dry and happy with your finished product, paint the whole thing with a thin layer of ModPodge to seal it in so it lasts for years; 9. Let dry for 15minutes.

“Every Child a Reader” creates and supports vital programs that strive to make the reading and enjoyment of children’s books an essential part of America’s educational and social aims (everychildareader.net). Two of the cornerstone programs are “Children’s Book Week” and the “Children’s & Teen Choice Book Awards.” Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. The annual tradition connects children with their favorite books and celebrates the joy of reading. The 99th anniversary of Children’s Book Week will take place from April 30th–May 6th, 2018. The Children’s & Teen Choice Book Awards were launched in 2008 to provide young readers an opportunity to voice their opinions about books written for them. It is the only national book awards program where the winners are selected by children and teens of all ages. Extension Activities: Alliteration Creation In similar fashion to Stanton’s Did You Take the B From My _ook?, pick one letter of the alphabet and make a list of as many things as you can that begin with that letter. Select ten of your favorite words, delete the first letter and construct silly sentences or stretch a bit more as a writer and weave those words into a hilarious story.

If you opt to write a story, be creative in describing how the letter of choice went missing and how you will bring the letter back to the story. Illustrate your sentences or story and share with family and friends. Be prepared for raucous laughter!

Poetry Slam Although the source poems are not included in Out of Wonder, biographical notes for the referenced poets are provided in the back matter. Select one poem that resonates with you, read the synopsis of the poet’s life, and locate additional poems to read in order to gain a sense of style. Write several poems in the same poetic

voice and pass them out to your family or friends to rehearse and then perform at a poetry slam. Designate someone to be the judge of each poetic performance on a scale of 0-10 (zero being the worst and 10 being the best) and name the winner. Hint: poetry slam winners are those that perform as if they mean it and convey the strongest emotions!

Giant Letter Collage Holmes’ use of collage in Out of Wonder enhances the messages and themes contained in the poems, and the focus on one single (missing) letter in Did You Take the B from My _ook? helps readers understand the importance of letters and the joy of playing with language. Draw (or ask someone to draw for you) a large version of the first letter of your name on a tagboard. Next, cut out all sizes, colors, and fonts of the letter and (if desired) pictures you like that begin with that letter from old magazines, junk mail, printables, stickers, newspapers, etc. Glue the individual pieces on to the tagboard to create a giant letter collage.

Helping Our Children Succeed!

ractice makes perfect! This is a mantra said in thousands of classrooms throughout North Carolina. Teachers have repeated similar phrasing to ensure every student feels confident and knows how to respond to any situation during an end-of-year test. The list of procedural strategies may be different among a class of students; yet, the goal is the same. Schools, teachers, students, and parents seek success! As parents, we feel the tension and anxiety from our children. Despite creating our own mantras, we want to raise confidence levels and boost morale while building understanding. If you are wondering how to support your child before and during testing, here are a few tips!

Strategies are Valuable In the “work smarter, not harder” philosophy, the most effective strategies will assist our children to focus their attention and use the tools which aid them in finding the correct answers. Effective strategies are not well-kept secrets; instead, each tool, such as using a highlighter or underlining key words, should be openly communicated. For some students, talking through preferred strategies, such as reading the questions first, crossing out unlikely answers, and not changing answers once chosen, are necessary actions, and should not be abandoned on the day of the test. (It is important for parents not to change or alter the process weeks before the big day.)

Read, Read, Read!

Prior to a day which requires a great deal of mental acuity, one of the best and most rewarding activities is to encourage reading for pleasure. Tests consuming a great deal of memory, focus, concentration, and understanding are meant to measure the ability to endure reading for long periods of time. Parents can assist by reading their child’s preferred book, and talking openly about character development, the setting, symbolism, irony, problems, and solutions. (This may be one activity you continue beyond school days.)

about distinct strengths and weaknesses. One way to boost computation abilities in a non-threatening way is to play Monopoly, for instance. Other board games, such as Scrabble, for 8-year olds and older; Settlers of Catan, a popular strategy game for ten-plus; or Balderdash, a reading and logic skill game for ages 12 and older, are a unique and persuasive means to increase confidence and build on skills that are handy during stressful situations. And, sometimes, children just need to exhale and have fun!

Managing Stress and Anxiety Despite the preparedness of students, an upcoming test, exam, or final can produce many unusual behaviors and moods. Some children may exhibit stomach pains, have difficulty sleeping through the night, and begin eating smaller portions or choose to skip meals. Other children may become boisterous, showing anger and shouting, or quickly produce tears. Encourage children to talk about their feelings, or take advantage of the wonderful May weather by biking around the neighborhood each evening after dinner.

Start Each Test Day with Excitement What are a few wonderful things you can do to excite your child and begin the day right How about a hand-written note of encouragement left on the bathroom mirror, or, perhaps, serving homemade pancakes for breakfast?

When the day begins positively, we often feel led by those good feelings.

Turn in Early To be the best in mind and body, students need plenty of sleep. While the night before testing is often challenging in numerous ways; on subsequent nights, your child should be mentally and physically exhausted. It is a good idea to recommend taking a bath before going to bed, to ease the body into sleep.

Testing is never an easy experience, especially when those three letters, E.O.G., represent a year of growth. Good luck, students! Show off what you know! With a positive attitude, you’ll move mountains!

Such a small word with a great connotation of expectation and anticipation! For students, it tempts the mind to desire a new schedule: more sleep, fun, and great freedom! Only one difficulty stands in the way of surrendering to “Summeritis”—school. Yes, despite the few remaining weeks, school is still in session, and the daily routine and focused mind are still needed. If you fear your child or teen needs guidance through the final weeks of school, the following strategies may be life savers!

A New Location to Complete Homework. The outdoors is an alluring place. Why not take books, notebooks, and needed supplies to the deck or lawn to complete homework Some students may find the outdoors the ideal place to concentrate. Fighting the need to be outdoors may result in frustration, wasted time, and energy!

Keep Track of Priorities. Before each study session, make a written promise to yourself by writing down the key objectives you wish to complete. While our favorite subjects are often taken up first, try saving them for last.

Don’t forget to factor in breaks. With longer days of daylight, students may find walking the dog or going for a bike ride rejuvenating to the soul! And, with every task completed, take pride in crossing off each one.

Younger students may benefit from listing the goals of their homework session. As a reward, consider a special treat, naming the evening’s dinner, listening to a favorite song, or perhaps engaging in a special activity before bed.

For parents: if tears occur, take a break, provide a pep talk, and return. If challenging behavior continues, e-mail the teacher to alert him or her to the situation, and ask for guidance.

Catch Up Day. While Sunday is a day to relax, it can also be a valuable time to catch up on studying, reading, or completing projects. The goal is truly in sight. Allow the weekend to ease your weekdays. Plan your time well!

Maintain a Positive Attitude. The house may need to enact a rule stipulating that questions can be asked, but not screamed, yelled, or stated through stomping. House rules

are important components of every family interaction. In the spring, when stress levels have reached a maximum capacity, help can be given, if asked for. Through positive words, students can convey exactly what troubles they are having, and perhaps be able to find their own solutions.

A Good Night’s Rest. With warmer weather comes a new level of exhaustion to the body. It could be connected to extracurricular practices, study sessions, or staying up later than usual. The body ultimately needs rest. If students find they have difficulty waking in the morning, it is one sure sign to consider turning in earlier.

End of Year Tests. Breathe, dear students! The end-of-year tests are an important aspect of your completion of school.

Stress and anxiety are factors which will hurt your chances of doing well. Keep reading every night. Ask questions and pay close attention to your teachers. Remember all the hints and suggestions you have learned throughout the year! The only additional tip is to eat a good breakfast the morning of testing, and sleep well at night. A positive attitude will ensure you will do great! Keep those spirits high!

Exams. The hard truth is that procrastination and cramming are not suggested methods to achieve success. The goal of exams is to know the information, and well. One question to consider is, how many subjects require a dedicated effort?

Create a plan to study, starting today, for 20 minutes, either two or three days a week. Use your strategies! Start rewriting notes and talking out loud to learn the content. Begin correcting all quizzes, and attending any after-school studying sessions! Every effort will help your success! Think positively!

End on a High Note. Since August, students have made substantial progress. Goals may have focused on reading and comprehension, writing or math, organizational and time management skills, listening and taking notes, studying and test taking. While the changes may not be noticeable, now is time to reflect on all of the achievements and successes gained this year! This is one moment heightened by inspiration. Do not stop now! All students will have to finish the year with their best effort, ending on a high note!

ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING Changed the Way I View ANXIETY

you haven’t read Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World by Max Lucado, I need you to go right now and buy it. I am gifting this book to all of my family and friends. Once my mom gifted my husband and me with this book, we immediately dug in, because both of us have some anxiety in our lives. I, personally, haven’t met someone who doesn’t have any anxiety, and once I started reading this book, I began to look at my anxiety in a whole different way.

Max Lucado is a fascinating author and inspirational speaker. The way he broke down the strategies for dealing with anxiety made this daunting task seem doable. I read this book as a devotional, half a chapter each night. I felt if I spent several hours and read the book in its entirety, it would have been overwhelming, and I couldn’t digest all the goodness. Here are my key takeaways from Anxious for Nothing:

3. God is sovereign over everything.

Before reading this book, I knew that God is sovereign and in control of everything but I do not think I really allowed myself to understand this. I would think, “I know God’s got this, but I am also worried about ________ (insert work, health, family, life, etc.).”

God is truly in control and maps out our lives in His hands. Why do I need to worry so much about the food I eat and the clothes I wear, when I am here for a greater mission and God will take care of me? God won’t give us anything we cannot handle, and He even gives us the tools we need to handle situations.

4. We are here for a greater purpose.

Now, when I catch myself with anxious thoughts, I take a breath, center myself and say a prayer, “God, please take this anxiety away. I am calm, You are in control, and I am here to glorify You.” Just saying that puts everything into perspective, and most the time, if I really meditate and focus on those words, the anxiety goes out the window.

Fake News

are less aware of the news than ever, and it is mainly due to the decline in newspaper reading and news program watching and an upswing in fake news. Fake news is the collection of stories claiming truths about current events but lacks facts to support the claims. Not only is fake news so much of a nuisance that people have begun to mistrust every fact they find on social media, but it is also damaging to social awareness. Fake news is written due to various motivations from the desire to cause trouble or sabotage a political actor or idea, to the urge to earn money through ads.

Only one in 20 young people rely heavily on a daily newspaper, according to a Harvard University study. For the study, 1,800 people were interviewed: 28 percent of them between ages 12 and 17 said they pay almost no attention to the news every day, and 32 percent said that they give casual attention to one news source a day.

Since it is unlikely that teens will suddenly decide to subscribe to a newspaper or choose a news program over Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram (the former sources just are not the modern way of digesting news, however educational they may be), I will give you some information on how to distinguish between real and fake news.

There is a quiz online at channelone.com to test whether we can tell the difference between bogus news and facts. Just look up Channel One, “Fake News Quiz.” In the test, it warns that if the titles of news stories are in all caps or have a lot of exclamatory punctuation, it is a good sign we are being lied to. Also, it lets us

know what type of web addresses are a scam and teaches us to tell if a site is sketchy by the amount and kind of ads. This exercise will help us pick out the fake news at a glance. However, if you are still unsure if a fact is reliable, there are other ways to find out. But first a quick warning about social media.

Social media outlets are experts at manipulating our confirmation bias. When we like a story or citation, Facebook (or whatever site we are using) will remember which type of news or viewpoint appealed to us. We are more likely to believe a position we already agree with (i.e., confirmation bias). Social media will spit out the stories they know we like, hoping to collect more likes and otherwise promote their supporters. Therefore, we should be particularly wary of the stories that seem to play to our emotions, the ones that hit a personal nerve.

Okay, last bit of advice: if you are particularly interested in a fact or story, but you aren’t sure if you can trust it, there are resources. Besides letting Google search the idea and look for credible sources, we can use FactCheck or Snopes. If the question has something to do with politics or a fact a politician claimed, we could use FactCheck.

Social Media sources and memes that are declaring a truth can be verified on Snopes. All that is needed is a key word, and we are on our way to concise, reliable answers.

Until restriction of fake news is implemented in the US, such as the legislation considered in countries like France, Germany, and Ireland, we, the consumers, have to become the gatekeepers.

We are forced to take responsibility for the news we accept as fact. We can surround ourselves, by deliberate choice, with sources that will educate us daily on the matters of the world, so that we do not grow up unaware of the needs and goals of our community and our world.

ADVICE FOR THE CLASS OF 2018 I believe life is a delicate tapestry of singular moments that places us precisely where we are at any particular point in time. Crossroads are abundant along the way, some that are obvious and others that are so slight, we hardly even notice the subtle, gentle fork in the road. Decisions and choices we make, some well thought out, while others are spur-of-the-moment, impact our lives in both complicated and amazing ways.

Science and philosophy go both ways on this idea. For example, scientists use the term “Apophenia” when describing the human tendency to assign meaning to an action arbitrarily, even though as scientists they see the event as totally random. The opposing philosophical theory, or the “Principle of sufficient reason,” basically says everything must have a reason or a cause, whether it’s known or unknown.

If we’re open to examining the question spiritually, how can we be absolutely certain that God doesn’t have a hand in at least some of the choices we make and directions we take? The short answer is, we don’t know; however, I personally feel God has a hand in everything.

I can only speak to you from my own experience. From there, I can say that for me at least, something or someone is pulling the strings. Because although I’d like to take credit for a lot of the good things in my life, I know I’m not smart enough or even lucky enough for all of those things to have come my way by my own thoughts and actions entirely.

There are ways we can sense when our lives are being directed in one way or another. Whether it’s a warm feeling that comes over us at a particular moment that assures us which choice to make, or reassures us that the one we made was the best one. At other times, it might be the unambiguous confirmation by a series of rapidfire consequences of our actions that show us we made the wrong choice. After which, the correction or solution becomes clear in a way it could never have been, if that wrong choice hadn’t been made initially. Which then raises

the question as to whether it really was the wrong choice in the first place, if it leads us to the right answer overall As you sit here today, you’ve already made an abundance of choices and decisions that can make you feel overwhelmed, and simultaneously relieved at having solved at least some of those questions in your life. And yet my advice to you is, that there will be lots more to come in the years ahead. As a matter of fact, you’ll never stop making choices and decisions until you’ve breathed your last breath. Some will be the right ones. Some will be the wrong ones. Some will be the wrong ones that lead to the right ones. And then there will be those choices that just seem to be provided for you from a tender, kind, loving and holy spirit resting on your shoulder that gently pulls you in the direction that is best for you overall.

As you go forward from this point, may you always have that kind spirit sitting on your shoulder in the important moments of your life, helping guide you to where you should be. I truly believe the spirit is already there now. You just have to be calm and silent long enough to sense it.

So, in the storms of life, when challenges and obstacles and enemies threaten your peace, remember to pause, and be still and quiet. And listen to the spirit on your shoulder, for it truly has your best interest at heart. For God put that spirit in you for a purpose. All you need to do is harken closely.

May the graduates of the Class of 2018 go forth always with the guidance and compassion of this gentle spirit.

May you succeed in life, love, and positively impact others around you in a way that really matters. You can do it….

Each moment is already there inside you, waiting for its opportunity to come forth. Now is one of those occasions.

erriam-Webster defines obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as “an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent obsessions or compulsions or both that cause significant distress, are time-consuming, or interfere with normal daily functioning, and are recognized by the individual affected as excessive or unrealistic.”

Allison Britz, author of Obsessed – a Memoir of My Life with OCD, shares her first-hand experiences with the onset of her OCD. In her book, she holds nothing back in describing the relentlessness of the thoughts in her head, the extent of which she tried to hide, and the initial stages of treatment once she and her parents found a specialist to help her learn how to deal with the condition. For Allison, the recognition stage of the definition came with a visit to that specialist.

What was OCD like from Allison’s perspective?

As Allison reflected on when the initial symptoms began, she admitted that she has no frame of reference. “Although I’d heard of anxiety and depression, I knew nothing about OCD. The angst and confusion were intense and I had no understanding of what was happening. I didn’t tell anyone and, in hindsight, probably could not have verbalized what was going on at the time.”

Allison’s OCD manifested at age 15, a difficult time for teenagers in general and especially so when the repetitive thoughts began to take over. With the pressures of school and the desire to fit it, the impact on her life was immediate. “Everything happened quickly and went downhill fast. I tried to keep as balanced as possible. My goal was to keep whatever this was a secret.” Allison confirmed that a few teachers approached her, due to a change in her study habits and quality of her homework. Friends initially reached out, some thinking she had an eating disorder, but she kept everyone at bay. She knew that some people realized something was happening, but either felt it was her business, didn’t want to interfere, or were uncomfortable.

The time period from the OCD onset to finding help was from October to mid-December. Allison revealed

that simply to be able to finally talk to someone who understood was remarkable. The pencil that her OCD dictated she had to use for all her homework and tests was down to the size of a tube of chapstick by the time she saw her doctor for the first time. Initially, she worked with her therapist several times a week and gradually was able to move to less frequent sessions. Allison noted that the first time she saw a classmate in the doctor’s waiting room she realized that she was not the only one dealing with OCD. Her sophomore year of high school remained challenging; however, by her junior year, she felt that she’d turned a corner and was better equipped to recognize her OCD when incidents occurred. As a residual impact of her OCD, she struggled with stress about mathematical formulas, eventually withdrawing from that class. But her psychologist and her parents ensured that she had the resources she needed during testing and other anxiety-related aspects of school.

“Since the original diagnosis, I’ve become open and vocal about my OCD,” Allison revealed. “I’ve found that people are accepting and understanding. Sharing helps with understanding from my perspective and for that of others as well.” er

Kathleen, Allison’s Mom, did not know the extent of her condition and what she endured until she read her book. “Allison was intent on keeping her anxiety and stress self-contained; therefore, even when we found a specialist to help Allison, one who had spent her career in treating OCD, we were only aware of the tip of iceberg.

The full picture laid out in her book caused gut punches and heart jabs.

How could I have been so clueless? It made me feel a little better when she wrote about her efforts to hide it from me.”

“What did I notice Allison’s weight loss, for the first thing that got my attention. Our family members are all tall and thin by nature. Allison was running cross-country (or so I thought at the time) so her loss of weight seemed explainable. Finally at dinner one night, I noticed that instead of eating her meal, Allison was just pushing her food around on the plate. My immediate thought was that she was purging. I confronted her with that question and her reaction was so genuine and she seemed so appalled that I even asked the question. I believed her and attributed her weight to too much exercise. I packed Allison’s lunch every day of her school life; it was something I enjoyed doing for my daughter. I learned through her book that at the height of her OCD, she stopped eating them and was hiding the uneaten meals in her backpack.” Kathleen shared an incident about when a neighbor called, worried about how thin Allison was getting and mentioned that when helping her into a car, her hand went completely around her wrist. That was the only time another adult, other

stressed by those changes. For some, these conditions are right for OCD.

than family, shared concern. Adults, like Allison’s friends, did not know what to do or how to help.

• Avoid the assumption that he or she is “just being a teenager.”

The turning point was when Kathleen found Allison on the floor in a fetal position. Allison was so entrenched in her OCD and believed that her thoughts were real. She was convinced that she had a brain tumor.

Kathleen said that their family doctor coordinated an appointment with a psychologist. It was a hurdle to get an appointment within two weeks with a specialist in childhood OCD and anxiety disorders. Allison’s doctor told us that she had the fastest, most severe OCD onset she’d ever seen in her 30-plus years of practice.

Kathleen described her thoughts after reading Allison’s book. “I wish I had known back then even a smidgen of how much she was suffering. I’m not sure what I would have done differently. But I’m sure that I could have been more solicitous or, perhaps, just given her a few more hugs.”

SIGNALS/OBSERVATIONS: There were some signals that in hindsight they wish they’d noticed sooner.

These are their personal observations only and should not replace, or be used in lieu of, seeking medical attention.

• OCD is far more common that one might think.

• OCD is a life-long condition that one learns to deal with.

• Other people also deal with these types of thoughts. Don’t feel embarrassed, and be verbal about what’s going on in your thoughts.

• From a parental point of view, it’s important to be aware of behavioral shifts (sudden changes in hygiene, style of dress, withdrawal, or hyperactivity); basically, trust your instincts as a parent.

• Puberty and early adolescence can be a trigger point for OCD. Young people are dealing with so many changes in their lives and are already

• Once your child is diagnosed, ask for some time as a parent for guidance from the therapist in identifying what is and is not OCD “OCD is a monster,” Allison explained. “I still get OCD thoughts, but have learned to stay on top of the situation and not let my OCD take control. Self-awareness is an important tool in my daily life. I hope by sharing my experiences, others can learn and know that you can live a fulfilled, wonderful life while managing OCD. Yes, I have OCD. My family struggled through it. I had an amazing college experience, met and married the love of my life, and am having a family. OCD is a thread through my life, but doesn’t control my life. It happened, we got help. My life is amazing. I’m so happy, life is good.

I have a mental illness called OCD, but I also have a happy, successful life.”

TEACH US TO PRAY – THE LORD’S PRAYER, LUKE 11:2-4

Which

do you like more: talking or listening? How do you feel when no one talks to you? Or when no one listens to you? Last month we answered a few questions

about prayer. Prayer is talking and listening to God, asking him questions, or thanking him.

Today, let’s learn some more about praying.

Sometimes Jesus went away by himself to pray. He wanted to “hang out” with his Father God. One day his friends said to him, “Teach us to pray.” Here is the prayer that Jesus taught them:

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

This is called The Lord’s Prayer, and many people still say this same prayer. You can learn it “by heart,” so you can pray it along with the grownups in church, but let’s see what some of these old-fashioned words mean.

God is our father (our Daddy) and he lives in heaven. His name is very special (or holy). We’re asking God to help us do good things while we are living here. We ask him to give us what we

need each day, and we remember to thank him, too. We ask God to forgive us when we sin

(when we do wrong or bad things). Forgiving is like erasing it or throwing it into the deepest ocean. He doesn’t remember the bad thing you did. In the same way, we should forgive other people when they do wrong things to us. (That’s not so easy, is it?) When we feel like doing wrong, we ask God to keep us on the right path.

Can you fill in the blanks? Prayer is ________ to God and ________ to God. You can even whine and cry with God! He understands you. Prayer can be silent (in your head) or out loud. Tell him about your day. You don’t need to use grownup words. Talk to God like you talk to your best friend, and try to listen, too.

When people are done praying, they usually say “Amen.” Amen means, “so be it!” or “yes, I mean it!”

Lord, teach us to pray. Amen.

To Know Her Is to Love Her

Mother’s Day is a high-pressure holiday for kids and husbands! It’s tough to find the perfect gift that shows Mom just how much she is loved and appreciated. And, there’s a lot on the line. Get this one wrong, and things could get really ugly, really quick.

I’ve seen lots of articles and blog posts about what moms do and do not want for Mother’s day. You should know, every one of these authors is wrong. Why? Because the well-intentioned people who wrote these bits of advice don’t know your Mom. And, when it comes down to getting Mom the perfect Mother’s day gift, the first thing you have to do is know her.

Moms regularly put their wants and needs on the back burner in order to ensure their family’s wants and needs are met. That’s, like, the number-one requirement of motherhood—putting one’s self last. It can be easy in this dynamic to forget that God created your Mom as a unique individual with her own likes, dislikes and desires. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to show her that you recognize and appreciate who she is as a person.

Before you head to the store to buy Mom a gift, consider who she is as a person! Think about her love language, her hobbies, her passions, the kinds of people she spends time with. Think about the last time she mentioned wishing she had something she saw at the store or on a commercial.

Once you have considered these things, it’s time to head out to get her a gift, or do something for her that shows you love, appreciate AND know her deeply.

Finally, if you’re reading this after Mother’s Day, keep in mind, there is never a bad time to show Mom you love AND know her.

#BeTheOne Perhaps no marriage relationship is more at risk of spiritual attack than the marriage between a pastor and his wife. Think about it, the enemy could not only destroy a sacred relationship between spouses, but also an entire ministry if given a foothold in your pastor’s marriage. Sadly, there are countless families and ministries that have been left in shambles as a result of this kind of attack.

You may wonder how you, a church member, could possibly help your pastor and his wife strengthen their marriage. Actually, there are quite a few ways you can help! As always, the first and most powerful line of defense is prayer. Remember to include your pastor, his wife and their family in your daily prayers.

You can also provide your pastor with some resources which will give him the opportunity to work on his marriage. Maybe you could buy him a gift card to a nice restaurant and offer to babysit so he and his wife can have a date night. You might take up a collection from other church members and send him and his family on a trip. My Grace-Full Life The Danger of Compartmentalizing Christianity

There’s

a saying all organized people love, “a place for everything and everything in its place.” Compartmentalizing helps us stay organized, but sometimes, we tend to compartmentalize relationships. It’s not always a bad thing—we go to her for this, him for that, and her for the other thing. But that’s compartmentalizing based on a skill set…very important in work situations.

Personally, I have a very bad habit of compartmentalizing my family. As a control freak, I like the security of knowing where there are and what they are doing. Selfishly, I want the freedom to go about what I’m doing, but I want them waiting exactly where I left them. I know that it’s grossly unfair, but I’m very protective of them. The Holy Spirit has to constantly remind me to remember Who is really in charge.

But what about when we compartmentalize our faith?

We go to church on Sunday, then we leave it all right there until we go back the next week. Would we be recognized as the hands and feet of Christ if we were outside the walls of the church?

The term we’re discussing is Compartmentalized Christianity.

Some of the primary ways Christian’s compartmentalize is through: • Never speaking to others about Jesus; • Never reading the Bible outside of the church; • Never praying outside of the church.

And why do we compartmentalize? Some of the primary reasons: • We were taught that it’s rude to talk about religion; • We don’t want to offend others who don’t share our belief; • We think God is too busy to care about our mundane details; • We don’t understand the Bible, so we give up, leaving it up to those who attended seminary and are church leaders to explain things.

But faith isn’t just about religion. Christian faith is about a relationship. And when we talk about compartmentalizing people, well….

Friends, Jesus doesn’t belong on a shelf. As our Savior, He has more than earned the right to be a part of every facet of our lives.

1 Peter 1:16 NLT says, “For the Scriptures state, ‘You must be holy because I am holy.’” It doesn’t say, “Be holy on Sunday and at Wednesday night choir practice.” It simply says, “Be.” “Be” is an active word that is in the moment. It is a verb in the present tense.

Here we are given another in-the-moment word— “Are.” Present tense. But we can’t be a light to the world if we leave the candle sitting in our favorite pew each Sunday. And oh, how our world needs our bright lights for Jesus!

Paul piggybacked on the words of Jesus when he wrote in Philippians 2:15b, “Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.”

That’s exactly what we need and exactly why compartmentalizing our Christianity is dangerous!

When we separate our Christian lives only when we’re with other believers, how will we be able to show the love of Jesus to others? When we put the faith we profess on a shelf, how can we truly practice the Great Commission Jesus gave every Christian in Matthew 28:16-20?

The compartmentalized Christian doesn’t live up to his or her full potential in Jesus when they separate their faith from the rest of their lives. I’m not saying we should be beating people with our Bibles, but when we live beyond the compartments, the Holy Spirit can use us to produce great fruit. Galatians 5:22-23 says, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

Y’all, I love the last line of these verses—“there is no law against these things!” That still holds true 2000 years later! It’s not a crime to exhibit any of these wonderful qualities!

While we’re going to continue compartmentalizing certain aspects of our life, let’s not compartmentalize our Christianity. Let your life shine brightly for Jesus and reflect the fruits the Holy Spirit is growing in each of us! Can there be any better praise to God than living for Him in all we do? No matter where we are, or who we’re with, or what we’re doing—if we are doing it to His glory, He is honored and we have let our light shine for the world to see!

WELCOME TO MAY!

After

successfully overcoming a long winter, including snow showers late into spring, many of us ache to finally be outside. To open the windows and doors of our house for fresh air, to tend our gardens, play 9 holes of golf or keep a watchful eye for the “pool open” signs soon to pop out in our neighborhoods and clubhouses.

It’s that blessed time of year where we lather in SPF and bask in the sweet sunshine. For many of us, the transition from spring to summer is the best of times, and perhaps the worst of times, as well.

As we welcome May, we officially enter swimsuit season. Ugh. Not many of us enjoy standing before the full-length dressing room mirror donning a skin-tight polyester-Lycra blend. Those who do, I imagine, fall into two categories: either they won the genetics lottery or they worked hard to like their reflection.

Some work hard mentally and emotionally to love their skin as it is. Others work hard

in the gym and the kitchen to sculpt their physic through nourishment and exercise.

Much like any transition or transformation in life, it requires sincere dedication and effort. Every swimsuit season, as I observe friends and family renew their gym memberships and return to strict diets, I consider how my faith might be different if there was a swimsuit season of the soul; a full-length mirror to see my heart’s reflection for Jesus.

What would I learn about my faith? What would I see in the reflection Would my reflection compel me to do life differently, to live more holy?

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, urged small groups and classes of Christian communities to hold each other accountable with the question: “How is it with your soul?” To be a part of those early Methodist societies required the discipline of self-reflection on spiritual nourishment, growth and transformation.

People had to take the time weekly to observe within their lives how they were truly feeling; how they were struggling or growing; if their hearts were warm; and if they were deeply in love with the Lord Jesus Christ.

As challenging as it may be for some of us to face our physical reflections, all of us as Christians should share the spiritual discipline of accountability, so that we may grow more and more holy.

Holiness cannot come by our own efforts or actions, but rather our dedication to be in God’s presence. The more we sit with God, read Scripture, worship, cultivate Christian community and celebrate God’s redeeming work, the more God shapes and forms our spiritual lives. As the potter shapes the clay, God works to transform our lives—but this requires of us a dedication and commitment, as well.

May each of you experience the joy of the season and take the time to bask daily in the light of Son.

Fishel Praise Him in the Storm

so much each day that we take for granted. You are going along in life with just a few bumps in the road, but when something happens that shakes you to your core, what do you anchor to in those times? Even those with a strong faith know that it’s easy to praise Him in the good times, but when life falls apart and the storm comes, is God there in those times, too, and how do you praise Him then?

It’s accepted that there are going to be accidents in bull riding; it’s not if something is going to happen, it’s when it’s going to happen. In the past, Wesley had had bruises and torn jeans and a concussion before, which was scary, but nothing prepared us as a family for what happened that day,” recalled Karen Fishel, Wesley’s mom.

THE PERFECT STORM

As Karen looks back a little over a year after Wesley’s accident, she can see that day was “a perfect storm.” Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, but for every wrong, there was a counter action.

“That day at the Lone Hickory Arena, they moved the bull riding, which is usually the last competition, to the first, so the crowd was in place. There were no paramedics or transport on site that day; one had not been scheduled and the Board Member who had possession of the association’s medic bag was home sick. When Wesley was thrown and the bull landed on him, almost immediately, everyone knew Wesley was in trouble. There were seven people, including a 30-year EMT, judging the competition, who came to Wesley’s aid. Among those seven was a cardiac nurse, watching the competition, a

Life was about as normal as it comes, until at 12:50 pm, when the bull that Wesley was riding threw him off and then, with Wesley face down in the arena, the bull’s back legs came down on Wesley’s back. In an instant, life as the Fishel family knew it changed. But the Fishels were well aware of the dangers of bull riding…this literally wasn’t their first rodeo….

One man in the crowd, there to see his daughter compete in barrel racing, is the head of security at WFBH Medical Center and due to having taken a different car than he usually drove, he had an oxygen tank in his car, which Wesley needed. While waiting on the ambulance, which got lost on their way due to an incorrect address, those seven people took turns doing CPR keeping Wesley alive. Nine times they lost a pulse on Wesley, but they kept doing chest compressions,” Karen said. Wesley’s body began shutting down from the loss of blood; veins were collapsed and emergency measures had to be taken by the paramedics, who arrived at 1:17 pm. They used their AED to shock his heart back into rhythm. Once in the ambulance, Wesley crashed, but was brought back and came into the Level One Trauma unit at WFBH, while his mom waited, not knowing how bad the situation really was.

A WALKING MIRACLE Karen and her daughter, Clara, made it to the hospital before Wesley arrived, having no idea the seriousness of Wesley’s injuries. As Karen scanned the waiting room for some idea of what happened, she saw looks on the faces of some of the parents that were at the arena, the solemn glances from medical staff, and she knew this was much more than a concussion. “It felt like an out-of-body experience. Wesley had sustained a crush injury, meaning that the impact of the bull had crushed his chest, injuring his heart and lungs, and during surgery, as they were inserting a trachea tube, he coded. It was during this time that they found internal bleeding due to Wesley’s spleen basically exploding,” commented Karen. Physicians met with the Fishels and shared with them how grave Wesley’s condition was and that they didn’t expect him to survive the night; if he did survive, they were unsure of the brain damage due to lack of oxygen after the accident. The next few days were filled with more surgeries and Wesley responded better to the treatments than expected.

“There were prayer vigils taking place at three high schools, East Forsyth, Walkertown and South Stokes, where Wesley attended. Waiting rooms were filled with family, friends and church members all gathering to pray. We spent time with Wesley, talking to him, and after several days, he responded.

Once we knew Wesley was going to make it, I questioned whether I was up to taking care of him, because we didn’t know how much damage had been done to the brain. I had always believed that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle, but I wasn’t sure if I was as strong as I needed to be,” Karen stated. Five weeks later, Wesley was home, and except for some short-term memory issues and neuropathy in his left foot, he is a normal 17-year-old, looking forward to attending NC State. With a year removed from everything, with a total of 14 surgeries for Wesley, Karen, like all of us, wonders why this happened to Wesley, but her faith is her anchor with that question, as it has been all along.

almost 24 years, local radio station, WBFJ, has spent four days in early May celebrating the Lord and raising funds during its annual Sharathon. This year, the event will be May 1st-4th.

“As a listener-supported station, fundraising is a necessity, and we have people faithfully give and support each year. We call it our annual coming together where we restart the financial year,” said Wally Decker, WBFJ’s general manager.

The idea for hosting a Sharathon was brought to WBFJ by other established stations more than 20 years ago. These stations provided a model for the event and helped WBFJ with creating their first fundraiser. According to Decker, the station liked the concept of hosting a Sharathon and it seemed like a viable way to support the station.

In addition, the results of the Sharathon vary every year.

Sometimes the crew at WBFJ is surprised when the results go above and beyond. However, Decker added when the results are not as they expected, God always provides to make up the rest.

More Than Just a Fundraiser Along with raising funds, the four-day Sharathon is a time for celebration.

For Decker, it resembles a family reunion, with listeners participating year after year.

“During that time, we focus on celebrating the Lord, how He has changed lives and met our needs,” said Decker. “Every year, we welcome and invite more people into our family and join us in listening during those four days.

Plus, we have people who have been with us for five, 10 and 15 years.”

The feeling of an annual coming together is just one of the successful parts of the WBFJ Sharathon. If you would like to donate to WBFJ during their annual Sharathon, you can call the studio line during the event at 336.777.1893 and speak to a volunteer. “We’ll have about 70-80 volunteers during those days taking calls. Individuals can also give faith promises. These promises are from people who want to support and plan to give a certain amount throughout the year,” said Decker.

Our forefathers recognized the significance and importance of prayer as a part of making decisions and working together as a unified country. Prayer is a freedom we should never take for granted, and as a country, our presidents have supported the importance of prayer.

In 1952, the National Day of Prayer became an annual event, recognized by Congress in a joint resolution and signed into law

by President Truman. The law was amended and the first Thursday of May designated for the National Day of Prayer by President Reagan in 1988.

Since then, over two million people have attended over 30,000 observances for prayers, which have been coordinated by over 40,000 volunteers. This year, we observe the National Day of Prayer on May 3rd.

The theme of this year’s National Day of Prayer is “Pray for America- Unity” and it’s based on Ephesians 4:3 , which reads, “Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.”

It’s a GRAND Life

When

I was a child, birthdays were fairly simple affairs. We dressed in our Sunday clothes, went to our friend’s home, played games like pin the tail on the donkey, ate cake and ice cream, got a favor bag, and went home. By the time I had my first daughter, it was obvious things had changed. No longer did you have a party at home - unless you had transformed your backyard to a petting zoo complete with pony rides - you had to go somewhere. Each year seemed to get larger in scope and more elaborate.

It was no longer a one hour, cake and ice cream, simple affair.

Not only are the parties a big deal, but the presents from family and friends have escalated as well.

Although my daughters don’t care, I am one that likes to keep things even in the gift department. Ten years ago, when my first grandchild arrived, it was all I could do not to buy every little thing I saw for her. Living only 90 miles away, it was easy to visit often and, of course, take a small gift. On her first birthday, it was time for a

big gift. Three years later when her brother (the first boy in the family) arrived, it was time to do the same for him.

Now, with four additional fabulous grandkids and possibly more to come, I probably should have rethought my initial zealous gift giving. Of course, I also like to honor my daughters, sonsin-law, and husband throughout the year, but especially on their special day. I started looking at the calendar and realized there were very few months that didn’t have at least one birthday in it. One in January, one in February, March has four, two in April, two in June, two in August, one in October, and one in December, and then, of course, there is Christmas.

I blame my mom for being evenSteven. She was always a wonderful and generous gift giver. Whatever she spent on my sister, it was the same for me. She also did that for her five granddaughters. Even though she lived in Florida, while her granddaughters lived in Virginia and North Carolina, she made sure they felt her presence.

So, will I change my gift giving ways?

Not as long as I am able to. It gives me such joy and pleasure to see their faces light up for even the simplest item. I don’t know a child that doesn’t love to get a gift - big or small. I know that my grandchildren love me and would whether I spent five dollars on a gift or five hundred. For it isn’t the gift itself, but the thought that goes into it. More important than the gift, it is knowing that I love them deeply, love being with them, and want them to be able to tell me what’s important to them, what is going on in their lives, and know that I will always be there for them whenever they need me. If my daughters never gave me another thing, they have given me the best gifts ever in my beautiful grandchildren. Besides, isn’t a little spoiling part of a grandmother’s job?

Well, May is one of the months with no birthdays, but I need to start thinking about the two in June they’ll be here before I know it. At least I don’t have to plan the parties - or pay for them!

The First Pancake

I

lovingly refer to my oldest child as our “first pancake.” Every experience with her is new. I have no frame of reference and rely on instinct, advice from friends, and a good amount of guesswork. Much like the first pancake of the bunch, the result is often uneven and sometimes burned.

We stumbled through her infancy and toddlerhood, bleary-eyed with wonder and lack of sleep. We largely sailed through elementary school, hit a few minor hiccups in middle school, and barreled into high school. Suddenly, I’m like a mother to an infant again, filled with anxiety and doubt. At seventeen, my daughter is smart, well-rounded, and completely infuriating. So how do we keep from burning our first pancake Here are a few things I’ve managed to figure out: 1 – Remember, I’m human. I’m embarrassed by the number of times I’ve flown off the handle at my teenager. There have been fights where I’ve dropped all the grown-up words (yes, that one. And that other one, too), thrown things, and acted like a complete lunatic. There have been times when my brain has been screaming at my mouth to shut up, as words that I instantly regret pour out. When the smoke clears, I have to remember that I’m a fallible being and it’s okay for my children to see me as such. It also gives me the opportunity to show them how to apologize and mean it.

2 – Remember, she’s human. One day,

my kid came in from school, yelled at her siblings, answered my questions with grunts, and stormed off to her room. I badgered her about what was wrong and gave her grief about her behavior until finally, she turned to me and snapped “Can’t I just be in a bad mood ” Yes, she can. Sometimes, I forget that my kids are people, too, and sometimes, they’re less than their best selves. Just like me.

3 – Stay in my wheelhouse. There are things I do well: Helping with homework, managing time, keeping things tidy, cuddling, and healing broken hearts among them. There are things I do not do well: Car maintenance, talking about drugs, explaining offside, large events, and much more. When it comes to the things I don’t do well, I outsource. I have a husband who happens to be good at most of them, but I’m always willing to ask a grandparent, relative, friend, or neighbor to step in and help.

4 – Try again. This may be the best thing I’ve done with my teenager, and it helps de-escalate many situations. If I ask a question and she answers me like I’m the dumbest person on the planet, I keep my voice calm, look her right in the eyes and say, “Try again.”

Sometimes I’ve said “try again” half a dozen times before she can manage to speak to me with kindness. The key is keeping my cool, and remembering I’m the grownup.

5 – I’m the grownup. Ultimately, it’s up to me to set the example.

Sometimes I fall short (see 1), but my responsibility is to teach my child how to navigate life successfully. What I do and what I say (and how I say it) lay the foundations of her future. And while I fully support explaining the hows and whys of all things, I also think it’s okay to occasionally say, “Because I said so.”

Because I’m the grownup.

6 – Have reasonable expectations. I’m forty-five years old. I have lived independently for twenty-seven years, in three different states, with a dozen different jobs and a boatload of life experience. My seventeen-year-old is not going to know that sometimes your check engine light comes on if you don’t close the gas cap all the way.

7 – Put myself in her shoes. About a month ago, my daughter was talking to me about an issue she was having with a friend. Out of nowhere, she burst into tears and said, “I’m not ready to leave home!!” I am so self-absorbed about how I feel about her going off to college, that I’ve never stopped to consider that she’s equally scared! The world is a big place for a young person, and it’s my responsibility to help orient her in the right direction.

8 – Remember, this is my job. It’s something I say to her frequently. When she thinks I’m nagging, or expecting too much, or showing her for the eight millionth time how to properly load the dishwasher, I remind her YOU ARE MY JOB. There is nothing in the world more important than doing it well.

An Appreciation of Your Teacher

are very observant.

They notice a new selection of books placed against the chalkboard, a slight change in the classroom, as well as a butterfly clip pulling back a long lock of hair worn by the classroom teacher. “You must live here!” says a child in the class. “You are the last one to leave and arrive way before the buses start coming. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you walk in or out of the school. Why ” To a classroom teacher, her profession isn’t dictated by a time period. The day ends once the phone calls to parents are made, plans for the remaining week are tweaked, student data is tracked, and the large stack of papers has dwindled down to nothing.

While most professionals worry about deadlines and presentations, meetings, and then anticipating a quiet evening at home, teachers will endlessly worry about the children who don’t own a coat or have anyone to read to at home. They will think of new ways to convey a lesson to reach those children who are easily distracted or need inspiration. It’s not a profession, instead, teaching is a vocation.

From the hours of 7:45 am to 3 pm, parents know their child is directed by organized schedules, information and rules. The day is dictated by starts and stops, presenting and voicing ideas, thinking quietly and working independently. How often do parents

think about the individual who is spending time with our children The truth may be that parents think about the happiness of their child by listening to the stories, the situations, and the outcome. Parents may measure learning through returned papers and tests, and by the type of assignments either presented as homework or completed in class; yet, how often are teachers given a simple note of thanks or told an anecdotal story to boost their day What do teachers say?

Lisa Daniels, a teacher of ten years, writes, “As a classroom teacher, I felt a great connection with my students. I heard countless stories of their siblings and parents.

Sharing is constant; yet, the professional boundaries do not allow teachers to share openly with parents. The divide is challenging. It would be nice to hear positive comments from our parents in lieu of just receiving a call when there is a difficulty or question.”

Mrs. Bullins has worked in the school system for over 20 years. As a middle school teacher, Bullins writes, “It’s wonderful when parents come to see what we have been doing at school. Our students have great pride and enthusiasm to show off their portfolios, art projects, or theater presentations. We want parents to participate in every event from talent shows to seasonal potlucks. Now, is a good time to volunteer. We always need assistance in big and small ways. We welcome parents and grandparents! It is one way to help your child and his or her class become successful! Please, contact your child’s school to see how your help is needed.”

Ms. Cooke, a fifth-grade teacher, writes, “The best way to thank a teacher is not to give presents, but to write a note, for example! We want to hear from parents.

Their feedback helps us to improve our teaching style, and to encourage your child. We want to hear the anecdotal stories, too. Teachers often go home and tell their families about their students. For one year, we are all an extension of family.”

Teacher Appreciation week begins Monday, May 7th, and spans the week until Friday, May 11th. The week-long celebration is a time of recognition of teachers and their contributions to education. It provides an opportunity for students and their parents to show support and appreciation. Mother, the Heart of Learning

A

mother becomes the heart of learning for her child. Mother is the first teacher. She by nature instills within her child the power of learning. One may ask, how does this happen? As both a counselor and educator over the years, I have experienced the reality and power of learning as a natural endowment in small children.

Children in preschool and early elementary school naturally love to learn. They see learning experiences as fun, and through the natural motivation of play, they can take on any learning experience. They feel no hesitation or fear, no matter what the task given to them by their teacher or parent.

Children, as with all humankind, are endowed with the spark and power of creativity. In reality, creativity is the very reflection of the image of God. That is, in the beginning, so states the Genesis 1 account, God creates being on the very first day, beginning with the heavens and the earth. Thus, through looking at humankind over the centuries, we see that they, too, have created through art, architecture, science, inventing, music, and literature, for example. Likewise, this God-like power is naturally and freely displayed in the living energies of children.

In reality, this way of learning in children is manifested in the inner person of children. This person or self, if you will, is the little child that is to remain in us and grow with us in the experience of living. Hence, learning must be fostered by counseling and education that is conducive to the tender self of children.

Such curriculum must roll with children, ever stimulating and motivating their creative energies.

In all, the curriculum provides learning experiences related to varied subject matters, while counseling assists teaching in personalizing the learning experience of knowledge. Together, teaching and counseling mold the developing personality of the true and creative self in maturing and growing children.

In essence, the power of creative curriculum and counseling remains connected to the mothers of children. For this reason, the source of the true self and creative power of children exudes from the heart of mom. In bearing and birthing her child and while caressing the precious gift at her bosom, mom transmits God-like creative energy into the heart of the child.

From mother, the child acquires language, and with language comes every creative thought, concept, and emotion. Furthermore, the amazing part of this is summed up in the uniqueness of the creative personality of every child. But, even exceeding this wonderful reality, and yet fundamental to its life, is the reality of love.

In fact, a mother from the beginning of conception teaches her child to love through the love that she gives to this new and budding person. Essentially, the mother, through loving, is teaching love, while also fostering creative learning through play in her child. Furthermore, true creative learning involves the power to love the objects and experience of learning. Hence, this natural endowment of children is due to the reality that mom has conveyed to them in the power of love for all things.

That is, no division exists between children and the objects of their experiential and creative learning.

In all, a mother must never be left out of the equation of curriculum and counseling, of teaching and learning, as she provides the channel through which children may foster their true creative energies on into adulthood.

For every “oh no,” there’s an “oh yeah.”

TABLE TALK: Take the opportunity to tell your children about the significance of Cinco de Mayo, “The Fifth of May.” Commonly mistaken in America as Mexico’s Independence Day from Spain (actually September 16th), Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French Empire in the Battle of Puebla May 5th, 1862, under the leadership of General Ingacio Zaragoza.

In the United States, the date is associated with the celebration of MexicanAmerican culture.

CHICKEN PORTABELLA MUSHROOM SPINACH & CORN QUESADILLAS

1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded 5 cherry tomatoes, diced 1 avocado, cubed

(serves 2)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Coat a cast iron skillet with vegetable oil. Warm over medium heat.

2. Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl.

3. Once oil is hot, place a tortilla in the pan and place half of the mixture on the tortilla.

4. Fold the tortilla in half or layer it with another tortilla on top of the mixture.

5. Flip the tortilla over to lightly brown on both sides.

Remove the quesadilla and cut into quarters.

Repeat for the second tortilla.

6. Serve with salsa.

Cinco de Mayo =

The Winston-Salem Dash Celebrate Our Hispanic Community with Exciting New “Copa de la Diversión” Series

Winston-Salem Dash, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball®, will take part in a fun, new initiative for the 2018 season! It’s the inaugural “Copa de la Diversión” or “Fun Cup,” a special event series that will transform BB&T Ballpark during five Sunday home games this season and embrace the culture and values that resonate most with the Dash’s Hispanic/Latino fans.

The Dash organization and Minor League Baseball® are pulling out all the stops to make this an entertaining event series that all Dash fans will want to be a part of. The sensational gameday experience will include select music, Hispanic-style food options and promotions designed with the Hispanic/Latino community in mind. Because this is a league event with 33 teams participating from 19 states across the nation, an exclusive trophy was designed to commemorate the occasion. The three-foot-tall “Copa de la Diversión” trophy will pay a visit to each participating city, and be on display for fans to see during its “Gira de la Copa,” or “Cup Tour.”

In addition, each of the 33 teams participating in the events is taking on alternate, culturally relevant on-field personas during these games. The Dash will become the “Winston-Salem Rayados.” The name translates to “the Striped Ones,” which is born out of a collaboration with the team and the Hispanic League of Winston-Salem. The name recalls the pinstripes worn by previous Winston-Salem teams, and the term “Rayo” loosely translates to “Bolt,” our beloved mascot.

The Winston-Salem Rayados will compete as part of the 160-game event across the country in an effort to build awareness and create excitement for the new national series. At the end of the season, the “Copa de la Diversión” trophy will be awarded to the team that most successfully engages their community through their marketing efforts.

Dash president C.J. Johnson adds, “Forsyth County has an ever-growing Hispanic population, and we are excited to celebrate their culture with our Rayados games. We look forward to representing Winston-Salem in this fun competition against other Minor League teams across the country.”

The Rayados will dress in exclusive uniforms and caps designed to celebrate the event. They’ll be wearing white jerseys with red and blue stripes and “Winston-Salem Rayados” emblazoned on the front. They’ll also have red caps with a white “R” outlined in blue. Fans will be able to purchase the caps all season at the Hanes Team Store at BB&T Ballpark or online at wsdash.com.

You can be a part of this special series for the following 2 p.m. Sunday home games: May 6th vs. Buies Creek; June 3rd vs. Carolina; June 24th vs. Down East; July 8th vs. Down East, and August 12th vs. Potomac.

How Your Phone Can Help You Lose Weight

I go

through different phases with my cell phone, where I love it and where I loathe it. However, after doing some thinking and researching, if you use your phone in a healthy and intentional way, it can help you lose weight and keep track of your fitness goals!

1. DO use your cell phone as a diary. On the notes section of my iPhone, I have some daily reminders that help keep me on track. These can be inspirational quotes that help motivate you, saved texts from friends or mentors, or a photo that inspires you. It helps to write down what we are feeling for us to process through those emotions. I would rather do this in a journal, but for practicality’s sake, my phone works just as well and is more convenient.

2. DO NOT compare yourself on social media. It’s a vicious cycle…you get on Instagram and follow all these social media stars, athletes and fitness mentors, but then you start to compare yourself to them. It’s healthy to have others motivate you, but you can also reach a fine line where it gets unhealthy and you are wanting to be just like them. Keep yourself in check by following people that help you feel good about yourself and encourage you.

3. DO download exercise apps. There are tons of informative exercise apps that are available for free. Some of my favorites include Nike, Shape and Women’s Health. Some apps include a library of different exercises you can choose from to complete your workout. Those are my personal favorites, because I like to build my own workout. However, if you want someone else to lay out a plan out for you, there are apps for that, too. Spend time finding your favorite one and stick with it!

4. DO NOT download certain apps or programs on your phone that make you lazy. You know what I am talking about! There are certain games, programs and apps that are a complete time waste and we look up, not even realizing 2 hours have passed. Get rid of those apps! You are wasting special time you could be working out, walking your dogs, spending time with loved ones or making a healthy meal.

5. DO text a phone buddy to be your accountability partner. I am lucky enough to have a couple of friends who help me in my fitness goals by holding me accountable.

When you ask someone to help you with a goal and to be your accountability partner, make sure you establish a plan for when they will check in with you. Is this a nightly text to ask if you worked out today? Once a week? Or is it a phone call every couple of days? Make sure you establish standards, so both of you are on the same page.

6. DO use your phone as a resource to look up nutritional info. Are you at a restaurant and don’t know if you should pick the grilled chicken wrap or the seafood salad? You can look up almost any nutritional information simply by Googling it. Use your phone as a resource that way! Also, if you are going out to eat, look up the menu ahead of time to help you pick the healthiest meal for you. There is more success in going to a restaurant with a plan than getting there and deciding to get chili cheese fries because they “sound good!”

7. DO NOT forget to clean off your phone. This tip doesn’t really help to lose weight, but it’s important.

Think about it…our phones go with us almost everywhere. Just like our hands need to be washed, so do our phones. I try to clean mine every night when I get home with a sanitizing hand wipe.

And now, owners Sammy Gianopoulos, Johnny Pappas, and Pete Bobatrious are adding to their lineup a new Clemmons-based restaurant called Three Bulls American Steakhouse. The three bulls are symbolic of the three owners and their bull-like determination to combine high-quality dining with exceptional hospitality and amazing food.

Hospitality and Ambiance Formerly a sports bar, the restaurant has undergone significant remodeling as it’s been transformed into the Three Bulls American Restaurant. A large, antique bull which stands sentinel over the front doors greets guests. The interior gives a modern, sophisticated, and industrial twist on traditional Americana décor. The soft grey palate is relaxing and inviting.

All cuts are aged and hand-trimmed to the chef’s specifications. Also – each cut is cooked “Pittsburg style,” at temperatures as high as 1800°!

The hostess stand is set apart with a lovely, wrought iron gate and the open fireplace in the back, as well as soft lighting and comfortable seating. Co-managers Eric Van Orden and Jordan Keiper both emphasized the importance of a warm and hospitable atmosphere. “This is a perfect place to enjoy either date night or a dinner out with family and friends,” assured Eric.

The Menu Owner Sammy Gianopoulos has worked with Chef Jamie Cline to create a menu to cater to any appetite. From appetizers to salads to entrees—the menu features a diverse selection. The Butcher’s Block section of the menu offers all the favorite cuts, including filet mignon, New York strip, ribeye, cowboy bone-in ribeye, center-cut sirloin, T-bone, and chopped steak! Key Lime Pie with Whipped Cream and Graham Cracker Crust

BY SARA WILES Key Lime Pie—one of my favorites! Classically simple, yet so refreshing for the sizzling summer months. Not to mention, this is a classic crowd pleaser! With only a few ingredients and only a mixing bowl, this recipe will be prepared on a constant rotation in your household. Give yourself some time, though, to thoroughly let the pie cool—there’s nothing worse than a warm key lime pie.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CRUST… 12 Graham Crackers 4 Tablespoons of melted butter ¼ cup of sugar FOR THE FILLING… 1 can sweetened, condensed milk 3 egg yolks ½ cup of key lime juice (**be sure to use key lime juice and not regular lime juice) FOR THE TOPPING… 1 pint of whipping cream ¼ cup of sugar DIRECTIONS

1. For the crust, begin by pulverizing graham crackers in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Dump into a pie plate and add melted butter and sugar. Mix together with a fork, then firmly press onto the bottom and sides of a pie plate.

2. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes.

Set aside.

3. For the filling, whisk together sweetened, condensed milk, egg yolks and key lime juice. Pour into your baked pie crust.

4. Bake at 350° for 12 minutes.

5. While the pie bakes, make topping by combining whipping cream and sugar in a mixing bowl. Mix with a standing or hand-held mixer until stiff peaks form.

6. Place topping on top of pie and refrigerate for 2 hours before serving chilled.
