Speaking of warp speed, while it may not have felt like it at the time, Salem Parkway (aka business 40) was finished in record time. I attended the re-opening party held at the WS Dash stadium and it was fun to get to walk on the fresh pavement the day before it reopened. Kudos to the workers and city officials for a job well done! They did a beautiful job with the new bridges and on/off ramp improvements.

child is allergic to, so you can avoid it if possible. If you are unsure, allergy testing may provide some insight.

can be hard to find a person who does not have allergies, especially during the change of seasons.

While you may associate them with spring, allergies come in all forms and are present year-round. In North Carolina, the three most commonly reported allergens are pollens, like grass, weed and tree pollen; mold; and dust mites. Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte were actually once listed as some of the worst U.S. cities for allergies.

The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology said they are among the most common chronic health conditions worldwide, and are complex because they can do anything from make you feel miserable to threaten your life. The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology explained that when someone has allergies, what is happening is that the immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. The substance is referred to as an “allergen,” and when the immune system responds by producing antibodies, that is when you have symptoms.

There is no one cause of allergies.

Sometimes it can be genetic, while other times, the environment is to blame. There is a long list of contributors, including: Dust Mold Medications/drugs Food Animal dander Insect stings The hard part about allergies is that many are inescapable, but you can plan your day differently to minimize the distress. To deal with pollen, it is best to stay indoors on windy days. If your child is playing outside, he should change clothes or shower as soon as he gets in the house. Vacuuming regularly and having a HEPA filter can

make a difference inside. If you watch the pollen counts, you may choose to stay indoors on days it is high, or at least keep the windows closed.

Mold likes the humidity, so this is problematic for the Tar Heel State.

Airborne mold is higher at night, so keeping the windows closed is a good idea. A dehumidifier can be a great tool. If you have to mow the lawn, try to wear a mask. One thing the climate is not responsible for are the dust mites.

Washing bedding in at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit, using allergen-proof bed covers and dusting and vacuuming regularly are good tips.

With kids, it can be hard to decipher the difference between allergies and an illness. Allergies can come along with a headache and runny nose, so your child may complain of a cold.

Antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be recommended by the doctor. It is important not to self-treat. You also want to be aware of what your

In the past, physicians encouraged parents to delay introducing infants to highly allergenic foods like fish, dairy, eggs, and peanuts, thinking that it would prevent allergies.

Now the train of thought has changed, to where physicians are finding early introduction decreases the risk of allergy down the road.

Managing food allergies means not eating the food that is responsible for the allergic reaction. You want to get in the habit of carefully reading labels and doing your best to eliminate the chance of any cross-contamination. If you are at a restaurant, take the time to let the waiter know of your food allergy, just to confirm that the food is prepared in a safe manner and does not contain any ingredients that will upset your body.

There is a lot to consider when it comes to treatment. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America found that successful treatment is based on medical history, results of allergy tests, and severity of symptoms.

Treatment can be anything, from simply avoiding the allergens to medicine or immunotherapy, which is where allergens are given as a shot, or sublingual immunotherapy, where it is placed under the tongue. The way the shots work is that over time a person becomes gradually desensitized to the allergen. When you take preventive measures and consult with a doctor or allergist, it becomes easier to take control of your allergies and live more productively.

Prom season will be here before we know it, and teenagers from all the local high schools will dress in their finest for a night out on the town. With many prom events located in downtown Winston-Salem, it’s no surprise that many of these students choose the best of the best right next door – Jeffrey Adams on Fourth.

As is the case with any popular restaurant on special occasion nights, it is smart to make your reservations as early as possible to guarantee your spot. “It’s never too early to make reservations for your special date night,” said General Manager Callie Taylor.

“In general, it is best to make reservations a week or two in advance during busy weeks/ weekends such as prom, homecoming, graduation, furniture market, etc. If you would like a reservation for a party of eight or more, it is best to contact the restaurant to make a reservation even sooner.”

is in full blossom, announcing that it’s time to get festive. With prom right around the corner, take a few moments to laugh, reminisce, and warm your heart as you read these prom memories.

Leaving Cancer at Home High school senior, Shelby Butler, has been good friends with the Richards family for her entire life. She was best friends with their older daughter, Julia. Shelby also had a closeknit friendship with Julia’s younger brother, Alex, who was then eight years old. At only four years old, Alex had been diagnosed with T-cell leukemia and experienced multiple chemotherapy treatments, as well as a bone marrow transplant.

In March 2015, the cancer returned for a third round.

Not taking another day for granted, Shelby made a special “promposal” to Alex with a series of poster boards to surprise her “superhero.” Alex’s evening was made extra special with a limousine to drive them from their favorite local dining at the Steak’n Shake to prom, in order to dance the night away.

The Princess Promposal In 2018, Madi Stofflet, a high school student, found out that her boyfriend would not be able to attend their upcoming prom. She decided that instead she would ask her favorite physics student and friend—Amanda, a “special-needs” student. During their class, Madi promposed to Amanda with a poster sign and pink tiaras, since pink was Amanda’s favorite color. Madi wanted Amanda to experience a night like a princess. She also says she wasn’t trying to receive any credit or praise, but simply wanted to take her best friend to prom.

A Llama’s Snack Summer Reynolds, a high school junior in North Carolina, was more than delighted when her best friend, Daniel, asked her to their upcoming prom. With the abundance of wildflowers and vibrant grass growing all around Summer’s family farm,

she offered to have her prom group take photos at her house.

However, they were not about to let the moment pass without the chance to have a photoshoot with her beloved farm animals. Summer’s llama, indeed, made a lasting impression, as it began chewing on the back of her lovely gown mid-photo.

Uh oh! Luckily, she was able to stop her llama from finishing his mid-day snack before he damaged the dress too badly.

Betty’s Dream Come True...76 years later In 2017, Connor Campbell made a bold and life-changing decision to take his 93-year-old grandma, Betty Jane Keene, to his junior prom. For over a year, Connor was insistent that his grandma would go to his prom with him, never once regretting or wavering in his decision. When the time came for Grandma Betty to go shopping for her glamorous evening, she decided to treat herself to a lovely pale pink gown from one of her favorite catalogs, which she paired with a light jacket.

To complement his grandmother’s decision, Connor decided to gift his grandma with a wrist corsage of pink roses, along with his pink rose boutonniere. In addition, Connor wore a charming pink vest and tie with his black tuxedo. After getting her nails, hair, and makeup done, Betty told Connor that she felt beautiful and quite dressed up for a 93-year-old. After telling over 100 school friends who his date would be, each and every one of them came up to meet the famous Grandma Betty. Grandma Betty and Connor both claimed to have had the best night ever and a heart-warming evening.

If Prom isn’t your thing, consider helping with a special-needs Prom. A few college freshman helped with one last year and said it was an unexpected joy, as it brought many happy faces to some who had missed their Prom that year or in the past.

Prom is a night full of dancing, laughter, and creating memories that’ll last a lifetime. Take lots of photos and enjoy each moment as it comes.

Jiaxi Ding, MD, and Roshni Ranjit-Reeves, MD, recently joined Duke Eye Center of Winston-Salem and brought highly skilled training in specialized areas of ophthalmology, both on a quest to enhance their patients’ lives in extraordinary ways!

AVOID VISION LOSS Dr. Ding is a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cataracts and glaucoma, both top causes of vision loss. “Cataracts cause the lens of your eye to become cloudy, and vision is blurred. Cataract surgery can help restore vision by replacing the cloudy lens inside the eye with a replacement lens,” she said. “It is an incredibly delicate procedure.

Most patients find it a quick, painless process and are amazed by the results – some patients may not need glasses at all, and some may only need reading glasses following the surgery.”

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can cause irreversible vision loss or blindness due to high eye pressure. “Often called the ‘sneak thief of vision,’ glaucoma typically produces no symptoms as patches of vision are slowly lost,” Dr. Ding explained. “I help patients understand central 20/20 eyesight can occur even in advanced glaucoma,

like a tunnel of darkness closing in as the peripheral vision gets worse first. From the first day we meet, my ongoing job is to empower patients to recognize eye diseases as early as possible, and if necessary, to fight its progression together. My mission is to have your eyesight outlive your life.”

Dr. Ding offers the latest surgical techniques for glaucoma and cataract surgery.

In the last year, Duke Eye Center added four new types of glaucoma surgeries, including iStent Inject (2nd generation of iStent), Hydrus Microstent, Omni Surgical System and Clearpath tube shunt. Dr. Ding is committed to offering her patients the best range of treatment options, including cutting edge technology.

Having relocated to North Carolina, she enjoys the weather, the people, a wealth of top-notch educational powerhouses, the ocean coastline and the majestic mountains.

LOOK AND FEEL REFRESHED Ranjit-Reeves or “Dr. Rosh” as she is known by her patients, specializes in facial rejuvenation, cosmetic enhancements, plastic surgery and reconstruction of the eye area, but makes it a priority to take care of every patient as a whole. “While I focus on oculofacial surgery, it’s important to listen to the entire story,” she explained.

“Stress management, diet and sleep are all integral in healing post-procedure, and improving skin health.”

With the world becoming more connected, we are all inundated with photographs, and the ability to zoom in on real-time images to literally document our aging process. “The most common reason patients come to see me is to look more rested and less tired,” said Dr. Rosh. “Patients do not want to look different; they want to look like a better version of themselves. But, in our day of instant gratification, patients want results fast, so the amount of downtime required with a procedure is something we discuss.”

Patients are more aware and educated about cosmetic enhancement options, and Duke Eye Center is seeing patients interested in rejuvenation earlier now in their 30s and 40s. “I am able to offer a full range of facial rejuvenation services from non-invasive photofacials to minimally invasive procedures such as fillers, neurotoxins and laser skin resurfacing in addition to surgery which allows for a multifaceted approach to the anti-aging process,” said Dr. Rosh. “I perform plastic surgery for droopy lids (ptosis), excess eyelid skin, under-eye bags and hanging brows to help patients look more refreshed while also improving their field of vision.”

Dr. Rosh and her husband were both fortunate to be accepted into fellowship programs in North Carolina. After completing ophthalmology residency in Tampa, FL, she was accepted to a two-year oculofacial and reconstructive surgery fellowship program at Duke University and stayed on as Duke faculty in WinstonSalem, while her husband is an interventional pain specialist at Wake Forest Baptist Health. A Florida native, Dr. Rosh loves the beach, Pilates and exploring the mountains of North Carolina.

Kick Off Your Spring with The Celtic Sessions Benefit Concert

you are looking for the perfect way to kick off your Spring season, we have an event that just might do the trick!

You’re invited to mark your calendar for Friday, March 20th at 7:00 pm for a family-friendly concert that benefits the Clemmons Food Pantry, featuring local musical talent, Celtic Sessions! The Concert will be held in the Curlin Center at Holy Family Catholic Church on 4820 Kinnamon Road in Winston-Salem and will bring the community together for a beautiful evening of entertainment.

Celtic Sessions are a local three-piece folk band with unique performances of ancient folk music, storytelling and songwriting. Band Members Naomi Orr, Julian Charles, and RG Absher create an interesting blend of woodwind and strings with their original songwriting and arrangements, all influenced by traditional Celtic music. Among the trio you’ll find talent that spans multiple instruments, including guitar, bodhran, harmonica, fiddle, banjo, hammer dulcimer, silver flute, Irish flute, pennywhistle, Celtic harp, and other traditional folk instruments. As the band affirms, “These are the songs of our ancestors. When we hear them, something magical begins to stir in our hearts of ages past. [It’s] born again in the room.”

The two-hour event will feature fan favorites, as well as some newer stylings from the band, and share a moment with a spokesperson from the Clemmons Food Pantry, who will provide insight into the pantry’s programs and community needs.

The masterminds behind this incredible giveback concert event are members of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton guild through the Holy Family Catholic Church. The guild was founded in 1981, and over the near forty years of its existence has been involved in countless outreach programs and events to help the community where it’s needed

most. It’s no surprise that the concert benefits one of their recurring outreach organizations, the Clemmons Food Pantry, a partner agency of Second Harvest Food Bank and a member of Feeding America.

If you are unfamiliar with the Clemmons Food Pantry located on Old Glory Road in Clemmons, it is a local nonprofit organization that was founded in 2004, providing supplemental groceries to residents of Forsyth County who are in need. They are proud to be one of the largest food pantries in our region and have an effect on over 800 local households per month. With over 16% of Forsyth County residents suffering from food insecurity and nearly 22% of its children unsure of where their next meal will come from, you can imagine how important the work they are doing really is.

According to their website, “Last year, over 480,000 pounds of food were distributed to needy individuals and families by the Pantry.”

We hope you come out this month to join us and enjoy the Celtic Sessions. Tickets are only $20, with half of each ticket going straight to the Clemmons Food Pantry to help make an impact. Ready Campers Let’s Start Packing!

“You cannot take the kitchen sink or your bathroom!” Excitement often leads campers to want to pack more than a few comforts from home!

Before one single item enters the duffle bag and backpack, try a different approach. The following tips will ensure campers attain some good sound camp wisdom, travel light, and pack only the most essential gear.

HAT, CLOTHES, AND SHOES In thinking about sitting sometimes on damp logs or chairs, consider including breathable clothes that, if wet, will try quickly. Label all of your possessions!

• Think about the potential for rain; therefore, pack a rain jacket.

• Pack extra T-shirts, underwear, and ankle socks.

• For horseback riding and cold nights, it’s smart to bring one pair of jeans.

• If the camp has a pool or lake, take two bathing suits and a beach towel.

• Your favorite baseball hat will prevent sunburn. If you burn easily, take a lightweight long-sleeved shirt.

• The bathroom may require a long walk from the cabin. Take pajamas with a bottom and a top.

• Shoes must be well-worn and comfortable. Breathable is ideal with straps that buckle or have Velcro.

TIP TO KNOWING YOUR NEEDS: Not every item on a list can address your individualized needs; therefore, think about what item(s) can help. If you are prone to blisters, carry a few waterproof band-aids in your back pocket. Enjoy having water with you? Then, pack a collapsible water bottle.

Often lose sunglasses? Attach a cord to keep them around your neck. Do mosquitoes love you? Consider wearing bug shield bracelets or a bandana.

TOILETRIES Mesh bags or small shower baskets are an ideal timesaver for campers who need to shower quickly. Smaller mesh bags can hold the items for quick trips to the bathroom to apply deodorant, face wash, Chap Stick, and teeth care.

• A small soap pump bottle will eliminate the mess of a cake of soap.

• Rather than dealing with wet washcloths, take a luffa.

• One shower towel should suffice.

• No need for a hairdryer, but take plenty of scrunchies.

• Take a flashlight.

• Bug spray and suntan lotion are very important.

• Take a laundry bag for dirty clothes.

LAUNDRY TIP: For clothes that smell bad, consider taking a gallon-sized Ziploc bag. Campers can fill half with water and put in a few drops of body wash; then, shake. After showering, rinse and twist, and hang to dry.

BEDDING Make it simple! Campers only need a sleeping bag and a small pillow. The trick is tying the two together for easy transportation!

DOWN-TIME Campers most likely will not read the three novels they packed, but camp counselors will insist on one handwritten letter home! Place lined paper, one or two stamps, and a pen in an enclosed bag to protect against water.

SNACK TIPS: If permitted, place all small- portioned, individually packaged foods in a Ziploc bag. It’s an efficient means to keep trash together while preventing an infestation of bugs.

PACKING TIPS Think in advance what a reasonable amount of luggage is; perhaps, the answer is one backpack and one duffle bag. The goal is to save space while being able quickly to locate items. Take a close look and start removing all the nonessential items.

•P air outfits together for ease of decision-making and access. Remember, you are going to live out of a suitcase. Try rolling items to save space.

•P lace all of your underwear and socks together in one location.

•C reate a place for bathing suits and towels. (Rolling is best) •B ackpacks are ideal for toiletries and bedding.

(Remember, you’ll need to carry everything!)

Once all items have a spot for ease in grabbing and going, campers can focus on having an adventure with new friends!

A TIP FOR DADS AND MOMS: Your child will be anxious and perhaps emotional at the moment of your departure!

You may be just as stressed! Keep your send-off simple and loving! Try not to worry! He or she will soon be back in the car, sharing all the humorous moments and great memories of the past week, while begging to return next year!

Summer Camp Memories

For

generations, summer camp has been creating lifelong friends and fond memories to look back on for the years to come.

For most campers, the memories begin as they’re being dropped off at camp. They’re so excited about the adventures ahead, yet so nervous at the same time. Whether summer camp entailed fun-filled dares, awkward moments, or magical daydreams, they are memories that’ll stay with us for life.

SOPHIA (camp year: 2006) I remember getting stuck and just floating around in the middle of the pond because I couldn’t figure out those complicated paddle boats. Those silly songs we sang in our cabin lines outside the cafeteria as we waited to eat are still stuck in my head, too. One fun song, in particular, was, “I like to eat ipe, ipe, ipe, ipples, and baninis.”

Good times! However, my favorite memory was comforting my cousin, Oliver, with candy from the snack shack when he was homesick. I remember that day so well—Oliver was sitting on a picnic table looking miserable. I knew he loved being with his mama, so I gave him candy, but he didn’t eat it, so I naturally started eating it while trying to console him.

OLIVER (camp year: 2006) Summer camp was filled with great memories, especially the times I got to

go with my cousins. One good memory was receiving my cousin Sophia’s candy when I felt homesick. One not-sofond memory was my mother refusing to pick me up, despite having strep throat, because she thought I was just homesick—thanks a lot, Mom! However, she did end up picking me up early, and we laugh about it all the time now.

Jules (camp year: early 1980s) I was a camp counselor in the early ’80s with my sister and two friends. We had so much fun competing against each other with our elementary-aged campers, but we were also trying to exhibit good leadership. However, we decided to make it extra fun one night, so we gathered some dirty laundry left on the floors of some cabins while everyone was having lunch. I mostly remember the four of us gathering our group of campers from our cabins and sneaking out for our spectacular adventure. I believe we threw the dirty laundry on the flagpole and rang the bell before dashing off in the darkness back to our beds in the cabins before anyone woke up from the ringing bell. We thought we were safe, as other campers jumped out of their beds to see what was going on. There was an outcry of blame and wonder asking “who did it?” but we all acted surprised. The next morning

we marched the long, narrow path to the office when the intercom called our names and we faced a multitude of tiny pointing fingers with voices saying, “ooh, you got in trouble.” Thankfully, they knew we meant no harm, but we learned the rest of the time we had to exemplify a leadership role, and no late-night counselor pranks!

NANCY (camp year: 2011) I had never been one to be afraid of heights until it came my time to climb the rock wall at summer camp. I remember them harnessing the ropes, as my heartbeat was racing, and I became flushed with fear of taking my next step. One of my camp counselors must’ve noticed, as she came rushing over to me with concern in her eyes.

Without me saying anything, she began comforting me with words of encouragement. Thanks to her kind words, I became once again motivated to make my way up the rock-climbing wall and was able to ring the bell at the very top!

Summer camp naturally cultivates fond memories that’ll last a lifetime!

Camp Care Packages + What Not to Bring

camp bundles the epic sense of adventure and a longing to explore nature’s trails that often leaves your little campers with a growling appetite. Your camper will probably be exploring every inch of fun whether it’s rain or shine.

A tiny note or keepsake to comfort them through the home-away nights is a nice touch to any care package.

Either way, these camp care packages contain a few simple ideas to help your camper navigate through their next big adventure.

For the Promising Artists Your creative camper may soar to camp heaven with a care package of a few art supplies to fill their creative cravings during downtime, outside of any arts and crafts classes. For instance, try sending a combination of a canvas drawstring backpack with Crayola fabric markers or fabric stickers. Drop in an encouraging note with a little instruction to remind them to have their camp friends autograph it before they leave. Similarly, you could add a friendship bracelet kit, nail art kit, or plain drawing paper with small paints and paintbrushes.

For the Bookworm Although summer camp is bursting with fun-filled activities, quiet times tend to make their way into daily routines. This is a perfect excuse for your book-lover to dive between the pages of a favorite tale or new one, such as Nancy Drew and/or The Hardy Boys. Featherweight LED clip-on lights or flashlights and popcorn or pretzels may keep the adventure exciting.

With infrequent reading times, a bookmark will help to jump back into the book’s adventure. Do-It-Yourself bookmarks could show how much you miss your camper by including blank bookmarks with colored pencils.

For the Adventurer From climbing rock walls to long days of swimming, and into the night with “capture the flag,” there are a few essentials that your camper may run out of during their adventure-filled week. Consider bug repellent spray, after-sun soother, wet-skin kids’ sunscreen, and lip balm for those burnt lips on sunny afternoons. Similarly, toss in a deck of cards for latenight camp games in the cabin. Disposable cameras may capture giggly moments, but try to find a single-use sports camera to prevent an upset if the camera accidentally collides with water.

Snack Ideas Outside of adventure, food can play a role in curing a little homesickness and give a needed boost for extra energy. Pack a favorite homemade trail mix, cookies, or other homemade baked goodies. Try energy snacks like granola bars, pretzels, and other non-refrigerated foods. Maybe throw in that candy that only comes at rare times, and never before a dental visit, to allow their sugar-high to wear off at camp. Sugar-free campfire marshmallow alternatives are also nice. Creative preparations for dairyfree and nut-free alternatives might be cherished by friends who have a more restricted menu. Try avoiding peanuts in case other campers have severe allergies.

Love from Home Finally, send a few pictures of the family and/or pet. Brighten smiles with a note from you, or even the pet signed with a paw, and include a little reminder of your love. Love and encouraging words of excitement for their adventurous camp experience may go a long way.

Tips on What NOT to Pack for Summer Camp • NICE CLOTHING - Leave the nice clothing at home. At a dance at the end of camp you can perfectly well sport a simple sundress or casual collared shirt.

• VALUABLES - Theft may not be an issue, but it’s better not to take any chances. Keep fancy jewelry or valuable electronics at home.

• TOYS - Summer camp is full of outdoor activities with minimal downtime.

Keep the abundance of toys to be enjoyed at home.

• GLASS WATER BOTTLES - Try to prevent packing anything that could shatter, such as ceramic mugs or glass jars.

• PERFUMES - Sometimes, perfume can attract more bugs than you’ll want.

• ELECTRONICS - To truly experience summer camp, try to leave behind, or teach limitations on, laptops, gaming systems, and so on.

The key to packing is thinking about what you use daily. Keep in mind that what you pack must be re-packed by the camper before he or she returns home (with a little extra dirty laundry.)

Kids and Botany

HANDS-ON LEARNING

When

the signs of Spring are evident, a child will wonder out loud, “Why are there so many flowers in the trees?” “What are those purple flowers called?” and, “Why are there so many colors in the spring?” Even if parents do not know all the answers to the mysteries of life, the child’s interest is a chance to dig into the fascinating and diverse themes of botany.

Lesson: Examining a Plant Taking walks in nature, even if it involves a stroll around the neighborhood, provides opportunities to collect plant samples. Use the term “botanist,” which describes a specialized scientist who studies how and where plants grow, and their significance in nature.

Once the specimens arrive home, he or she can conduct the following experiments: • With the aid of a magnifying glass, assess the veins, the changes in color, the spots and the health of the leaf. Allow questions of wonder!

•U se drawings to help recognize the type of plant, and label the location of the seeds, petals, stem, leaves, and roots. Not all plants grow the same; therefore, learning about a variety aids in understanding. Use advanced terms such as sepal, pollination, photosynthesis, and the scientific and common names of plants.

With repetition, your child will integrate the terms into his or her vocabulary!

• I n using paper and crayons, encourage the child to make rubbings of various types of plants and leaves. Introduce herbaceous and woody plants, softwoods, and hardwoods.

•S tart a botany journal of pictures, names, and observations. Test your child’s knowledge on walks by asking about the names of trees or flowers.

Lesson: Biology of a Plant Examining a plant leads to further questions of curiosity, such as “How do plants grow?” While there are numerous educational experiments, try the following: • As living things, leaves breathe and receive nutrients to grow. To prove this idea, add two drops of food coloring to a juice glass and watch the changes in a celery stalk or white flower.

•D efining the term photosynthesis requires an activity. Remove a plant to a dark room while continuing to water. What happens to the plant?

Lesson: The Life Cycle of Plants Gardening requires many ideal situations, such as quality of soil, sixplus hours of sunlight, oxygen, and watering. Children will learn just by participating; therefore, plant a garden that includes a variety of tubers, vines, stems, and stalks.

•M ost children can participate in growing a plant in a small paper cup. Expand the experience by growing sunflower seeds in a fivegallon bucket for harvesting.

•P lace a few seeds in an unsealed sandwich bag with a few drops of water; then, tape it to a window with a great deal of light.

Gloves, Trowel, Soil, and Containers Caring for plants often requires the use of tools. In a variety of activities, children also can learn to feel comfortable using hand trowels, secateurs for pruning and clipping, a hoe, shovel, and fork, to name a few. To incorporate useful skills alongside the practice of using tools, try a few of the following activities.

• Cuttings and Water: Most houseplants only need a four to six-inch stem to thrive and grow in water. Many vegetables regrow with the aid of water. Encourage your child to submerge the top of the carrot plant, the roots of a green onion, or a celery stalk.

• Propagation: Rather than cutting flowers to use for an arrangement, another lesson is to form a new plant.

Woody plants such as forsythia, hydrangea, lilac, rose, and many others require a cut below the sixth shoot or leaf and extending roughly six inches. After removing the lower leaves, allow the cuttings to soak in water.

After a few hours, transfer the “sip” to a rooting hormone and plant in a seedling soil mix. With daily spritzing the first four days and watering daily, new shoots will appear in two to four weeks.

Every season of the year offers children an opportunity to learn about plants and their start from seeds. It begins with questions and the wide-eyed curiosity of witnessing nature. Encourage conversation. The topic of botany can only grow into a life skill with guidance; therefore, take walks and exchange ideas about plants, whether for food or beautification purposes. In time, your child will want to take an active approach in environmental stewardship, nutrition and health, science education, practical living, and enjoyment of the outdoors.

The 3-Year Cycle:

How This Key Element of Montessori Education Supports Real Learning and Development

As

a parent, you may envision, and hope for, your child’s development to be linear and predictable like an ever-climbing line on a graph. From day one into adulthood, they continue to pick up new things, discover the world around them, and excel in traveling up, and up, on that imaginary graph.

The reality, however, is that children develop in a much less predictable fashion with long plateaus with little to no evident growth, followed by massive leaps of progress, and possibly even regression of development as part of the cycle. What’s important to remember is that this is perfectly normal! What’s more, we see these patterns repeat themselves across multiple social, emotional, and cognitive development functions. At the end of the day, it’s part of growing up.

So, how do the structures of school and education support those ever-changing development needs and promote learning and growth? The Montessori School of WinstonSalem, TMS, follows and believes in the Montessori multiyear curriculum known as the 3-Year Cycle.

How the 3-Year Montessori Approach Differs From the Conventional Montessori students experience a multiyear curriculum with the same classroom, teacher and classmates within a 3-year span which provides a level of consistency that helps meet the needs of child and adolescent development. At the end of each cycle, they experience their Capstone Year where students engage in the most challenging work and master what they’ve learned. Essentially, the 3-Year Cycle provides students with the experience of being the youngest, middle, and oldest of the classroom and gives them exposure to the responsibilities that come with each of those roles.

Additionally, it curates deep relationships with their teachers and peers over each cycle.

From the teacher’s perspective, this extended learning cycle also allows for a genuine and intimate understanding of each of their students’ learning needs and unique characteristics. According to Professor John Hattie, researcher in education, “One of the most effective indicators of student success is the teacher-student

relationship.” The benefits from allowing repetitive time for children to build these relationships during their Montessori education is quite evident.

Why the 3-Year Cycle Works for Children Jon Churn, Head of School at TMS shared that “the three year cycle is one of my favorite topics when it comes to Montessori education. There is so much research out there that supports the multi-level cycle program, and I’ve seen the impact it makes on children.”

Each child learns and absorbs experiences at a different pace. The 3-Year Cycle not only builds in necessary time for this, but consistency for the social and emotional development as well. A 2003-2012 research study on Montessori students and their outcomes, confirmed that “Montessori children have an advantage not only academically, but also in social and emotional development.” Churn shared, “younger children are inspired by the bigness of the work the older children are doing and can see what’s next in the curriculum to help them get to that big work. This level of situational context for their learning helps children understand, as they grow in the classroom, that they will be able to do Z by doing X and then Y.” This multi-age approach also supports the spiraling curriculum of Montessori education, which provides earlier learning foundations that build toward more complex ones. Revisiting learning topics, while introducing new ones, helps to keep things fresh and allow students to link things together. “The joy of teaching is seeing our students connect what they are learning to other aspects of their education.”

Lasting Impacts Discovered in Students When you review the many benefits of a Montessori education, two of the greatest are the self-confidence and love of learning students gain over time from truly being active participants in their own education.

TMS shared that, “In a Montessori classroom, children operate within a balanced structure of freedoms and responsibilities, free to follow their inspirations with work that stimulates and satisfies their inner motivations, while remaining responsible for tackling challenging and difficult work head-on.”

During the 3-Year Cycle of watching their classmates and learning at their own pace, the confidence that is gained as they can see their own progress is immeasurable, and something that stays with students as they get older.

In a study published by sciencemag.org comparing Montessori cycles with that of traditional schooling, Angeline Lillard shared her findings that, “Montessori children performed better on standardized tests of reading and math, engaged in more positive interaction on the playground, and showed more advanced social cognition and executive control.

They also showed more concern for fairness and justice.” Over the academic years in the program,

Montessori student outcomes include independence, confidence and competence, autonomy & collaboration, intrinsic motivation, social responsibility, academic preparation, spiritual awareness/cosmic education and global citizenship.

Now What?

Readjusting to Normal after a Life Event

There

are milestones in life, good and bad, that can make a person’s daily “normal” change.

Milestones, such as getting married, having a baby, experiencing a loved one’s death, or divorce, can take a little time to settle into a new schedule, especially after the excitement or sadness of the event. For example, when there is a wedding or new baby, houses are filled with people, noise, and action. As for a death, houses are filled with people, noise, and action, but in a different type of way. No matter what the life event is, there is a period of time, there is a hustle and bustle where the realization of a new normal hasn’t set in yet. However, when the action dies down, the reality does hit. Life has changed, and sometimes it takes a while to create a “new normal.” But, there are tips to try that will help ease the transition.

• Try to make the changes few and simple. Whether it was a positive or negative change, it isn’t the right time to move to a new house, buy a new car, or relocate to another city.

Familiar environments and routines will help a person feel comfortable and as if there is still a part of their old life intact.

• Be kind to yourself, be patient, and allow yourself some grace. Whether you are a newlywed, new mother, or have just lost your mother, give yourself some time to realize things have changed, and that there probably will be mistakes and mishaps at the beginning. Take it in stride, and remember to take care of yourself. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help, if needed. Most of the people who were there for you during the event will be there to help after the event has quieted down.

• Remember that you aren’t alone, and life changes happen to most people. More often with changes dealing with death, financial setbacks, divorce, etc., it will take some time to get back into the swing of things and create that “new normal.” It is important to understand that these things also happen to others; not just you. Patience, grace, and kindness are keys to

adjusting. Take a nap in the middle of the day, go for a walk, take your friends up on their offers to help, or build up the time you can work, if able, to get you into the new normal of your life.

• Along with allowing yourself time to embrace the change, practice gratitude. At the end of each day, write down a few things you are thankful for, or who has helped you along the way. A gratitude journal is a good way to keep track of your daily reflections of thankfulness, especially during a difficult time. Writer Holly Lebowitz Rossi states in the article, “3 Ways to Adjust to a ‘New Normal,’” “becoming grateful for the moments of support does not minimize or take away the feelings of a situation. Being grateful shows that the horrible situation does not permanently crush and destroy our spirits.” For some people, there can be a sadness that comes once a happy event is over with, but think about the new adventure that is set before you. For example, even though the wedding is over, you have years of happiness to come with your marriage.

• Reflect on the memories and pictures of the people and the event. Laugh about the mistakes, reminiscence about the special moments, and always hold those times close.

The power of some of these life events is that you’ll still remember them years later.

• If you have a family member or friend going through a life event, be there for them. Reach out to see if they need anything or anyone to be there; just be aware that it is important to not make them feel pressured, or as if they have to do anything. Letting a person know they have a family member or friend there for them whenever and for whatever is enough.

Some people have more than others, but life events and changes happen to us all. Take your time to build a new schedule, and don’t be afraid to readjust where you see fit.

Talking To Your Child about the Election One

of the hot topics that you may overlook in discussions at the dinner table with your family this year is the upcoming presidential election. All elections matter and national ones can have an even larger effect on us. You may feel uncertain about who is best to lead the way forward or have concerns about issues that affect your family. Kids can sense this and sometimes even feel anxious, too. Keep in mind that kids may hear things at school from friends who are learning about the election at home. Your child may agree or disagree and has to know that it is okay to have differing opinions. It is more important than ever to model good listening, respect, and the value of getting educated on the issues during an election year.

The American Psychiatric Association offered some strategies on how to tackle the upcoming election in your home. Mindfulness and encouragement can make a difference, as well. Some tips are: • Find out what your child knows about the election.

• Ask if your child has questions about the election.

• Provide age-appropriate information and reassurance when discussing the election.

• Control your own feelings; if you act uncomfortable, your child will pick up on that.

• Teach your child to respect the opinions of his peers, even if he does not share them.

• Empower your child to walk away if he or she is in an uncomfortable situation.

• Let your child know it is okay to tell someone he does not want to talk about the election.

• Have your child talk to a trusted adult if he does not feel safe when someone talks to him about the election.

• Monitor social media exposure.

• Make sure your child knows you love him unconditionally.

• Take care of yourself and continue to put effort into hobbies and things outside of the election.

CNN has encouraged parents to have a talk after the election is over. They want parents to let kids know that many names were on the ballot, because one person does not control the United States. There are many people with roles, and that is why there are what is called checks and balances in the government. You should talk about

the results from an educational and historical perspective. There are many messages, such as that the popular candidate does not always win. Pay attention to how losing candidates concede and talk to your child about healthy ways to accept rejection. The way someone accepts winning is just as relevant as how they accept losing.

You can compare this to a sports game, since it is an analogy that your child may better understand.

Make sure you have the conversation at an age-appropriate level. You may have to get down to the basics, such as term limits and the nomination process.

You can then go into the fact that there are political parties and that each one has its own set of values and unique candidates within them. Let your child know when he will be of age to vote and how to register. Present it as a civic responsibility and a privilege. Years ago, someone may know how you voted based on the color paper you were handed at the polls, but thanks to the advances in technology, it is private today. When you are 18 years old and vote in the general election, your vote is confidential and is a stamp of approval for who you think is the best person to move our great country forward.

Fulfilling the Promise in Forsyth County FAMILY SERVICES

EDUCATION has long been the door to opportunity and the pathway to prosperity in America. But achieving the American Dream has become a remote possibility for too many, especially for younger generations.

A long-time friend to Winston-Salem, Dr. Robert Putnam, captivated Winston-Salem leaders several years ago with his groundbreaking study on the importance of social capital or “community connectedness,” which generated a local movement to strengthen neighborhoods through resource-sharing and community collaboration.

In 2016, Putnam was asked to be the keynote speaker at the inaugural Raising Every Child Benefit Luncheon, where he presented his startling examination of the growing “opportunity gap” that is preventing communities like WinstonSalem/Forsyth County from flourishing.

In his book, Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, Putnam found that over the last 30-40 years, the gap has grown between the opportunities and resources for those kids coming from affluent and well-educated homes, and opportunities and resources for those kids coming from poor, less-educated homes. The point of his work is to say, “Here’s the reality.” Now, how do we go about changing our current reality to move us back toward the reality of the American Dream?

The opportunity gap is widest in Forsyth County.

A 2017 study by two Harvard economists found Forsyth County to be among the worst counties in the U.S. for helping poor children move up the income ladder. We rank fifth worst out of 2,873 counties nationwide. Only four American Indian reservations are below us.

During his address at the inaugural Raising Every Child Benefit Luncheon, Putnam challenged community leaders to collaborate, innovate and work together in order to ensure that every child in Forsyth County has the opportunity to reach his or her full potential.

That was four years ago.

Since that time, Family Services has convened a team of champions to focus on proven ways to close that opportunity gap, most notably

during the earliest years of life. Brain science has confirmed what most parents already know, namely, that the first five years of life are a time of tremendous physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. These are the years when brain architecture is being built, with more than one million new neural connections formed every second.

But just as seeds must be planted in good soil in order to grow, a child’s environment and life experiences shape and change the architecture of the developing brain, laying the foundation for all the development and behavior that follows, including how healthy and successful the child will become as an adult.

This year, Dr. Putnam returns as the fourth Raising Every Child keynote speaker to underscore the belief that communities do, in fact, flourish when all children have access to opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential and contribute back to community life.

During his address at the Benton Convention Center on April 23, Putnam will focus on the current state of America—deep and accelerating inequality; unprecedented political polarization; vitriolic public discourse; a fraying of social fabric; public and private narcissism.

While it may seem as if the only thing that Americans agree on is that this is the worst of times, Putnam says we’ve been here before, and we can turn the corner once more to become more cooperative, more generous; a society more focused on our responsibilities to one another and less focused on our narrower self-interest.

The Registry of Unmet Needs Helping Those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

a given: being a parent is hard work. But when you are raising a child with special needs, the level of care and stress is not just higher, it shifts the foundations of families and adds unimaginable complexities for everyone involved.

Dealing with the day-to-day of a special-needs child of any age can make you feel like you are the only one going through the stresses and highs and lows of life. Knowing there are others who understand how you feel and are working on your behalf to assure services are available to your loved one makes a difference. Deborah Woolard and Sarah Potter are two moms with adult sons dealing with disabilities, and are on a mission to get those in our state with intellectual and developmental disabilities the help they and their families need.

The process to receive services and support begins with The NC Innovations Waiver, a health plan for people with IDD (intellectual and developmental disability), allowing people to receive services and support in their homes and communities instead of an institution. Cardinal Innovations and other managed care organizations keep lists of those eligible to receive a NC Innovations Waiver slot. This list is called The Registry of Unmet Needs.

In North Carolina alone, there are 14,000 people who have IDD on The Registry of Unmet Needs for assistance; 792 of those are in Forsyth County.

Those 14,000 qualify for services to help them develop skills and participate in community activities. The Registry of Unmet Needs continues to grow, as families become desperate due to lack of support and services for their loved ones. There are many who have been on the wait list for ten years or more. Deborah Woolard and Sarah Potter are two moms who are bringing attention to those on the wait list, and their families often suffer financial burdens in caring for their adult children.

Moms on a Mission Deborah Woolard Deborah’s son, Jeremy, is 35 years old with Down Syndrome, muscular dystrophy, among other diagnoses, none of which has kept him from having a fulfilling life. Jeremy has been active in local theatre productions throughout his life and is engaged. “My son is fortunate to have a waiver, and I see the benefit it offers him; however, his fiancée has been on The Registry of Unmet Needs for 14 years. Jeremy is able to work part-time and gain skills to be more independent and active in our community. Families are desperate for help and bringing attention to the wait list is a place to start.

Sharing the stories of families locally and across the state is important in helping move forward in organizing and communicating with the public and legislators about the realities faced by these individuals and their families. The Triad IDD Advisory Committee, made possible by support from the Forsyth County Commissioners and Cardinal Innovations, of which Sarah Potter and I are members, works to advise on policies, procedures, guidelines, and publications for those with IDD. Those that have an Innovations Waiver develop goals and activities that help them develop skills, get jobs, make friends, and participate in community activities,” said Deborah.

Sarah Potter Sarah’s son, Matthew, is 33 and has quadriplegia cerebral palsy.

He graduated from Wake Forest University in 2009 and has been an advocate for those with disabilities since he was in middle school. “I have been advocating for those with IDD since Matt’s diagnosis.

Matt has been on The Registry of Unmet Needs for almost nine years.

It’s difficult to plan for your future or maintain any sense of security when there are so many unknowns. My work with The Triad IDD Advisory Committee mission is to help identify gaps in service, recommend additional services, advocate for underserved populations, and award grants to non-profits to offer programs to our IDD community.

It is so important to bring an awareness to what families face. We are developing a website to bring families across the state together to more effectively address the wait list and to approach the General Assembly to work on solutions. A lot of work that advocacy groups do depends on funding through grants and decisions made at the federal level. There needs to be a commitment on the part of the General Assembly and stakeholders to sit down and figure out an equitable way to address the needs of families whose members with IDD languish on the wait list for years, unable to plan for the future,” Sarah commented.

Deborah and Sarah hope to bring awareness to the value of those in our communities with disabilities.

“They have so much to offer and with a little assistance those on the wait list could receive needed assistance in areas of personal care, job skills, volunteering, and wage earning, allowing them to live life to its fullest,” stated Deborah.

You’re invited to the 9th-Annual “Get Your Rear in Gear: WinstonSalem.” It’s part of a nationwide series of run/walk events where funds raised are invested right back into OUR community. The money raised helps local people—our neighbors—who are affected by colon cancer.

It also increases education initiatives and screening levels.

This year’s Get Your Rear in Gear event will take place on Saturday, March 28th, at the beautiful Quarry Park in Winston-Salem (featured on page 48). This is a day of family-friendly fun that will include a live performance by Guilty Party (a band that features two of GAP’s physicians!) and feature vendors from local businesses.

How does GYRIG impact the community?

Get Your Rear in Gear is an event that is part of the Colon Cancer Coalition. Nationwide, the Colon Cancer Coalition has granted over $5 million to support such causes. Locally, organizations may apply through the Colon Cancer Coalition for grant money to receive funds raised from one of their city’s sponsored events.

For example, last year, a check for $10,000 was presented to Cancer Services at the event. Cancer Services helps patients affected by cancer across North Carolina, but primarily from Forsyth, Davie, Stokes, and Yadkin counties. Services are provided at no charge to the patient and include support such as: • Patient advocacy and information; • Medication and financial assistance; • Equipment, supplies, wigs, prostheses; • Transportation to treatment; • Wellness groups and lifestyle programs; • Peer support.

Who is GAP, and how do they fit in to this cause?

GAP offers care to patients in need of colon cancer prevention and screening, as well as diagnosis, treatment, or management of digestive system issues. Its 16 physicians and five advanced practitioners take a teamwork approach to focus on staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in gastroenterology.

What is GAP’s Role in the Get Your Rear in Gear Event?

As a local gastroenterology practice and the presenting sponsor of the Colon Cancer’s Get Your Rear in Gear: Winston-Salem event, the cause is near and dear to the hearts of the GAP team. They love the opportunity to support their patients, and they welcome the opportunity to educate the community about colon cancer prevention methods. GAP knows that reaching even one person with the right message can impact a family for generations.

Did You Just Say, “Prevention?”

Yes! There are several “screening” methods out there for detection, but GAP’s goal is “prevention” with proper testing. Colonoscopy can prevent colon cancer because, over time, one may develop polyps in their colon. These polyps are growths that may have the potential to turn cancerous. Colonoscopy allows physicians to remove those polyps from a patient’s colon. Think it couldn’t happen to you? In 2019, GAP found pre-cancerous polyps in 44% of patients who underwent colonoscopy!

Here’s the Problem

Colon cancer is preventable, yet according to the American Cancer Society…

• 1 in 23 people develop colon cancer; • It’s the 2nd-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States; • It’s the 3rd-most common cancer.

Although current guidelines recommend that colon cancer screening begin between ages 45 and 50, diagnosis rates in younger adults have increased significantly in recent years. It is predicted that by the year 2030, incident rates in people ages 20-34 years will increase by 90%, and rates in people ages 35-49 will increase by 27.7%.

But, There’s Also a Solution

While the increase in colon cancer is concerning, the solutions come from: • Increased awareness; • Preventative testing; • Early detection; • More support for the patients.

This helps to save lives! When colon cancer is discovered early, the cure rate is about 90%.

What Are the Symptoms of Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer can be very slowgrowing. Unfortunately, this often means that by the time symptoms present themselves, the cancer may be in advanced stages. These symptoms may include: • Rectal bleeding; • Change in bowel habits or the consistency of your stool; • Feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely; • Abdominal discomfort; • Unexplained weight loss.

If you experience any of these symptoms and they do not resolve themselves, don’t hesitate to call your doctor for guidance!

Should I Have a Colonoscopy?

As a generalized recommendation, colonoscopy is the “gold standard” for anyone over the age of 50, though certain guidelines have lowered this recommendation to 45. This is because, as previously mentioned, it is the only screening method that can actually prevent colon cancer.

In addition to age-related factors, you have a greater risk of developing colon cancer if: • You or a family member has a history of colon polyps or colon cancer; • You are African-American; • You are overweight; • You have Lynch syndrome (an inherited condition that can pose a higher risk of developing certain cancers later in life); • You smoke and/or drink alcohol on a regular basis.

No one gets excited about a colonoscopy, but most people who have had one agree that it was a much simpler experience than they expected. Regardless, the 2 hours you spend in the office is well worth the benefit of knowing you’re doing what’s best for your health. Don’t worry—with the advanced sedation methods that are available today, patients are asleep and should have no recollection of the procedure.

Coming to Grips with Medicating my Children

phone rings and my palms start sweating, my heart races and I have to take deep breaths to calm myself down. What if it’s the school again? Which kid got in trouble this time?

This was my reality a year ago. My children, in 1st and 3rd grades, are sweet, smart, and occasionally motivated.

They are also the poster kids for ADHD. For those of you who don’t live with this, let me explain what this means. It means they physically can’t control a lot of their impulses. It means meltdowns afterward, because they don’t understand why they can’t just control themselves.

It means countless parent-teacher conferences, and meetings with school administrators trying to come up with ways to help them succeed in school. It means therapy—for everybody.

Right around when things got super crazy with the kids in school, and I put them into therapy, I decided to try therapy for myself. If you haven’t done it, I highly recommend taking the plunge. I learned a lot about myself, including an anxiety diagnosis. After six months of intensive therapy, I took the next step of starting on anti-anxiety medication. And let me tell you, folks, it was an absolute life-changer. I stopped having anxiety attacks multiple times a week.

I started being able to regularly step back and control my anxiety before it controlled me.

Most importantly, it helped me realize that there was nothing wrong with me; I just had a chemical imbalance in my brain that could be corrected with medication.

Growing up, I felt like there was always this stigma surrounding ADHD medication. In my mind, Ritalin was used as a filler for parenting. If the parents were better at controlling their children, then they wouldn’t need to medicate them. Ah, the joys of being a perfect parent before actually even being a parent. I knew academically that this was wrong, but until I myself started medication, I didn’t realize exactly how wrong it was.

At this point, I started seeing my children through a different filter. I could see that they were trying so hard to “be good” as they said—although we continue to stress the importance of using language such as “making good choices” vs. “being good.” They knew what choices they should be making, like to stay in their seats during instruction time at school, yet they physically were not able to control it.

It was shortly after this revelation that I found myself crying at the pediatrician’s office, because I felt that I had somehow failed them by not coming to this decision earlier. After being assured that I had not (thanks, Dr. Warner!), we got a prescription for our oldest son. It took a few tries, but after finding the right medication and dosage, I can honestly tell you that it has flipped his world right-side up. While obviously we still go through many normal parenting struggles (apparently nine-year-olds are incapable of keeping their rooms clean?), we can see a huge difference in his performance at school, at home, and, most importantly, a large boost in his self-esteem.

We found the same with our youngest son after we started him on medication as well, and they have both expressed how joyful they are to be able to control their impulses better.

For all the parents reading this who have gone through this, or are going through this, or are going to go through this: YOU ARE A GOOD PARENT. Your child’s diagnosis does not define them, just as it doesn’t define you. Keep on advocating for, and loving, your children with every ounce of your being, and know that if you chose to go down the medication route, it is okay. You’ve got this. We’ve got this.

Women Who Care will host the Lions Club Mobile Eye Screening Unit in Clemmons on Saturday, April 4th, 9 am–2 pm (arrive by 1 pm) at Clemmons United Methodist Church, across from Clemmons Village Hall!

Women Who Care invites anyone (male and female), ages 6–18 (with legal guardian/parent) and ages 19 and older to the Lions Club Mobile Eye Screening Unit at Clemmons United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 4th, from 9 am–2 pm. Please arrive by 1 pm for processing and eye tests.

Participants will receive free blood pressure, free glucose screening, a free eye exam, and menu ideas for an eyehealthy diet. Spanish interpreters will also be available to assist with language translation.

The Many Uses of Dishwashing Liquid

is a color of depth and stability! It may remind you of the boldness of the heavens, as well as the cleanliness of the water. It symbolizes truth and trust, confidence, and intelligence. In 1972, Proctor and Gamble released a dishwashing liquid called “Dawn.” Today, we recognize the “original Dawn” not just from the coloring, but the smell. For over 47 years, users didn’t know how the terms “depth” and “stability” would impact more than just kitchenware. Let us count the ways blue is heaven-sent!

INTERIOR HOME Carpet Stains: No need to buy another product; combine ¼ cup of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of Dawn in a spray bottle. Fill the rest of the container with water. After spraying liberally, let the liquid permeate the fabric for five minutes before blotting dry.

Unclog a Toilet: Pour one cup of blue liquid into the bowl and allow to sit for 15 minutes; then, add a bucket of hot water from waist high.

Add a Shine to Your Bathtub: Buckets and bottles are not necessary.

Add a squirt of dish soap and baking soda to your wet sponge and start scrubbing.

Eliminate Laundry Stains: Allow just a dot of Dawn to penetrate the stain for approximately 10 minutes before scrubbing with water. The best situation is to toss it into a load for washing.

Clean a Broom: Why throw away a perfectly useful cleaning tool? Try an hour’s soak in warm water and a few drops of dish soap. The same method works well with dustpans, too.

Trap for Fruit Flies and Gnats: In a juice glass, combine two tablespoons of red wine vinegar with a half-teaspoon of Dawn.

Stir slowly to prevent bubbles, and cover with plastic wrap. Poke a hole in the center for the pests to enter.

Degrease Kitchen Cabinets: A bowl of warm water with a few drops of Dawn serves many purposes, including the stains on cabinetry.

Degrease Range Hood: In a sink full of boiling soapy water with a sprinkle of baking soda, soak the screen for a minimum of 30 minutes. Afterward, use a brush to scrub the dirt from the mesh.

Glass top Range: The enzymes within the soap ease the time and exertion of scrubbing; therefore, begin with spreading a thin layer of Dawn followed by a sprinkle of baking soda. Lightly mist the surface with hydrogen peroxide. Once the mixture rests for 10 minutes, use a sponge to lift the grime. It is wise to use a damp, clean cloth to remove the excess mixture.

HEALTH Make an Ice-Pack: Fill a quarter of a quart bag with Dawn and place it into the freezer. The soap will transition into a pliable gel.

Remove Tree Sap Without Harming Your Skin: Blue Dawn is a potent liquid to safely separate sap from your hands, body, clothes, or paint finish. Just apply the dish soap to a wet towel and softly scrub.

Create Soft Cuticles: Do not use water; instead, soak your fingers directly in Dawn for a few minutes.

Encounter Poison Ivy? Blisters will dry and stop spreading if you wash with blue dish soap.

Need an Inexpensive Pet Shampoo? Blue Dawn saved thousands of marine animals in the wild, impacted by oil spills. It is safe to use on dogs and kills fleas on contact!

GARDEN and OUTDOORS Kill Aphids and Other Pests: Don’t worry about your plant, the goal is to eliminate the insects plaguing your crops. In a spray bottle, add a few drops to water and spray lightly over your plants.

Make a Natural Weed Killer: Combining the most natural ingredients can produce a deadly solution. Use one gallon of pure, white vinegar, one cup of salt, one tablespoon of Dawn, and 10 drops of orange essential oil, only on cloudy days. Depending on the area to be treated, a spray bottle may serve as an ideal container.

Beautify Outdoor Furniture: With a bucket of warm water and a few drops of Dawn, use a cotton rag to remove the grime from the furniture.

Find a Tire Air Leak: Add a few drops of Dawn and water to a spray bottle. Once the droplets meet the hole, bubbles will appear.

Lubricant: Just a drop resolves the problem of a squeaky hinge or slide of a drawer.

Clean Tools: In considering items that require a thorough washing, whether they are oily, greasy, or just encrusted in dirt, choose Blue Dawn!

The non-toxic, degreasing soap works on almost everything! Remember blue!

Dogs are cherished family members, and keeping them healthy and out of harm’s way is important to you and your family.

So, how do you know if your furry friend is in need of a new diet plan? The easiest way is to keep up with vet visits throughout the year. Your veterinarian will pop your pooch on the scale to check his or her weight during these yearly visits, and be able to tell you if a problem is on the rise. If you pay close attention to your dog’s shape, you can also easily see if they are carrying a little too much weight, especially with respect to their ribs! Take your hand and feel around the ribs to see if you can easily touch them or if there is a little too much cushion. You should be able to feel their rib cage without difficulty, as well as most of their other bones throughout their body.

Similar to the steps humans take when wanting to shed extra pounds, it really is about creating a lifestyle change in order to be most effective. Your dog will need some help changing their nutrition and activity, and you want to do this in the healthiest way. Integrating little changes can really make a big impact and help your dog get fit.

Addressing Your Dog’s Appetite and Inner Foodie

First up is identifying if you’re serving a breedappropriate dog food.

For example, some smaller dogs may be on dog food

with too high a protein level for them, causing extra weight to pile on (and producing some unfortunate gas). Check with your vet to make sure the food contains the right type of nutrition and confirm the recommended serving. Be sure to measure each serving and know how often meals need to be served. If you are swapping brands, make a note that dogs tend to have sensitive stomachs, and a slow swap will do better than going cold turkey. Try introducing a little of the new food mixed in with their old brand, while increasing it over the weeks until you are completely switched over, to avoid digestive issues. Don’t forget that removing table scraps, treats, and any sibling pet food that may be within their access will also help.

Up the Activity Level and Get Fido Fit

You may be imagining doggie yoga and puppy aerobics right now, but there are less crazy things to help a non-active dog get fit! Many owners have a routine of taking their dog out for a “w-a-l-k” once or twice per day, which is a great way to help both of you stay active. You can improve activity during these walks by either increasing the frequency, distance, or even the speed of these daily excursions. A trip to the dog park on the weekend can be something you both look forward to, while getting them outside, playing. Encourage ruff playtime with a game of frisbee or tug-ofwar to get calories burning, too. If you have a lazy mutt, you can entice them with low-calorie treats; just limit how often you give out those rewards!

Be proud of the changes you’ve created, and give your poochy pet a little extra love while they are making progress. You are in this for the long haul, and so are they! “May your pockets be heavy, and your heart be light; may good luck pursue you each day and night.”

Aye, the luck of the Irish to you! A required sentiment to family, friends, and strangers, in hopes fortune is on your side. Even if your bloodline lacks even one percent of Irishness, you most likely recognize well-established superstitions from the pastoral Emerald Isle. Not accurately perceived as ol’ wives’ tales, the Irish and perhaps you, too, believe in these tidbits of superstition just as much as prophecy!

HANDING OVER A KNIFE OR SCISSORS: There’s often a loophole to a bad omen. In the case of preventing a cut or a damaged relationship from occurring, you can receive a dime in return.

UTENSILS FALLING ON THE FLOOR: A knife falling off the table is likely to inspire a gentleman visitor. If it is a fork, a lady is bound to arrive. The spoon, on the other hand, represents meeting a child. And, the best part is, if numerous utensils happen to slip from your hands, then expect a flood of party-goers!

THE RED-HAIRED MAIDEN: Granted, 10 percent of the population of Ireland has the gene of a natural redhead; however, there are several involving the ginger maiden: • If the first woman you meet is a ginger, superstition says, “You’ll have bad fortune all day long!”

• Seeing a red-haired lass at the market also implies you are unlikely to make money.

AN ITCHY NOSE: Sadly, an argument is on the horizon!

AN ITCHY PALM: The positive is in your left hand, which implies a windfall of money; however, on the right side, expect a bill arriving soon!

CLOTHES INSIDE OUT: Embarrassing as it may be, an article of clothing worn the wrong way is a good sign! Unfortunately, righting a wrong leads to bad fortune.

DO NOT UPSET THE WIND: The wind has a vindictive side. Should a child not listen to his or her mother, the wind may change course and reap havoc.

THE MAGPIE: For identification purposes, the bird possesses a black head and tail, and is accented with white on its belly, wings, and back.

The Celtic custom states that the goodwife of the home gently knocks, sometimes with the housekey, on each hive to obtain the bee’s attention, and share events, such as the departure and return of the household, or messages to the spirit world.

Brides and grooms and newborns visit the colony to offer introductions in hope of blessings.

During death, the hive receives a shroud of black cloth and an invitation to the funeral. Food and wine rest near the entrance in tribute to the winged flyers. Disrespecting the bees results in the fear that the luck will fly away or die.

With a potential curse awaiting every step, Irish folklore offers many recommendations. Start your day by tossing a handful of salt over your left shoulder, or holding a holy object, such as a cross, a vial of water, or a saint’s medal, all of which works just as well as a Shamrock or rabbit’s foot. “May your day be touched by a bit of Irish luck, brightened by a song in your heart, and warmed by the smiles of the people you love.”

If

you have insomnia, you are not alone. The American Sleep Association said it’s one of the most common sleep disorders, characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Someone can be affected for nights, weeks, months, or even years.

Everyone is different. There is primary insomnia, where you cannot assign a cause, and secondary, where the problem is related to a medical, environmental, or psychiatric issue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that one in three working U.S. adults has insomnia. It becomes even a greater issue because only some people with insomnia are actually undergoing treatment, while the rest may accept it as normal, or not even realize that there is a sleep disorder called insomnia, and they are struggling.

It is important to know that insomnia is not the same as sleep deprivation. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has listed some hallmark signs, like: • Having a hard time initiating sleep.

• Struggling to maintain sleep and waking up frequently during the night.

• Waking up early and being unable to go back to sleep.

• Having nonrestorative or poor quality sleep.

There are many reasons you may have difficulty falling asleep. The American Sleep Association mentioned some possibilities, such as: • Stress; • Anxiety; • Depression; • COPD; • Restless legs syndrome; • ACE inhibitors; • Beta blockers;

• SSRI antidepressants; • Medications for blood pressure; • Medication for allergies; • Traveling across time zones; • Working overnight; • When the bedroom is not cool, dark and quiet.

The hardest part about having insomnia is the rough toll it takes on carrying out the day. People with insomnia find themselves to be moody, irritable, angry, to have a lack of motivation or energy, have an upset stomach or headaches and have a hard time concentrating. They can also be sleepy during the day. The main difference between insomnia and sleep deprivation is that the person with insomnia often can still perform all right during the day, whereas the sleep-deprived person will have difficulty functioning. The American Psychiatric Association has research that shows insomnia costing employers more than 90 billion dollars annually in reduced productivity, and workplace accidents and errors. Not getting enough sleep is a true public health issue that has consequences.

Having good sleep hygiene can make a difference when it comes to having a restful night. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America has offered some tips, for example: • Meditating; • Exercising; • Doing yoga; • Prioritizing your to-do list and delegating tasks if you can; • Playing calming music; • Trying to get enough sleep; • Volunteering in the community; • Doing activities to distract yourself from daily stressors;

• Talking to people, including about how they can help you; • Waking up and going to bed at the same time daily; • Establishing a bedtime routine; • Never using electronics before bed; • Keeping the bedroom cool, dark and quiet; • Getting a comfortable mattress and pillows; • Turning the clock away from you.

While there are many medical treatments and alternative medicine treatments for insomnia, there are also many non-medical options. The National Sleep Foundation suggested considering cognitive behavioral options, like: • Breathing exercises; • Mindfulness; • Meditation; • Guided imagery; • Tensing and then relaxing muscles; • Limiting time in bed to only when you are sleeping; • Cognitive-behavioral therapy.

It is important to stay away from sleep aids, because they contain antihistamines. While you may believe they help you get a better night’s sleep, they also cause daytime sleepiness. For those with severe cases, doctors can prescribe sleeping pills or try some unapproved prescription drugs like antidepressants or antipsychotics. There are always new developments. As recent as December of last year, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug for insomnia called “Dayvigo.” It is classified as a controlled substance, which means it has potential for someone to abuse it or become dependent on it. Another study revealed that sugar and white bread are tied to insomnia in older women. You want to try everything else first, as most medications do come along with some risk. When you try to err on the side of prevention and take action if you recognize symptoms, insomnia can be a manageable, and even curable, sleep condition.

Technology and Your Child

is no secret that within the past few years, technology has changed and grown massively. Adults and children are being introduced to new forms of technology all the time. Whether it is the newest iPhone, version of Alexa, or other “smart” device, people quickly adapt to it. The impact of technology can have a positive or negative effect, especially on developing children.

Today most of a child’s play is related to technology in some way. According to the Huffington Post article, “The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child,” a 2010 Kaiser Foundation study found that elementary-aged children, on average, spend 7.5 hours per day on entertainment technology. The article also explained how using technology this much can limit a child’s creativity and imagination, can cause them to become more sedentary, and possibly lead to problems with obesity. Too much sensory stimulation through screens can then cause greater problems, including delays in child developmental milestones, self-regulation, and attention skills. Research has shown other effects on a child’s behavioral and social skills, including the ones below.

• Critical Thinking – Too much technology can lead to a decrease in daily reading.

• Privacy and Safety – Social media and the Internet are gateways to information.

However, children can be exposed to harmful things at too young an age.

• Reduced Sleep Quality – Studies have proven children sleep less when at least one device is present in their bedroom.

• Relationships with Family and Friends – Constant checking of phones, iPads,

and computers for notifications or in looking to escape boredom can cause negative effects on children and adults’ relationships and interactions.

New guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) have been set to help prevent some of these effects. WHO now states that infants under one year old should not be exposed to technology and children between the ages of two and four should have no more than one hour each day. As for older children, limits should be balanced, based on technology usage time and how the technology is being used. For instance, whether is it being used for school or social media, videogames, etc. Children need to spend time outdoors, with their families and friends, being creative.

It can be hard to place limitations on technology, since it is constantly used and all around us. However, it is possible, and can be done with these easy ideas, suitable for all ages.

• Set aside time each day for reading, and have no electronics present. Use a timer to help children know when it is time to put away technology and grab a book. Be consistent in stating what time daily reading is done. You can also take this trick a step further to help with a child’s critical thinking by expanding the conversation—asking the child what they read and what connections they could make to the novel. Daily reading is important for children, young and old, and will help them be more successful in school.

• Let children be imaginative with their play. Get out the arts and crafts

supplies, board games, dress-up clothes, dollhouses, pots and pans, etc., and let the child’s imagination go wild. Twenty years later, I still remember my sister and me turning our living room into shows for our families and a restaurant where we served food from our little kitchen. When children are engaged in imaginary play, they are learning social and emotional skills, as well as problem-solving and thinking skills.

•B e informed and involved with what your child is viewing on the Internet, social media, and on T.V. Encourage games and shows that are educational and set parental controls on all devices that your child uses or could use.

•H ave open discussions and relationships with your child about technology usage. The discussions will change, depending on the child’s age and what is appropriate and not appropriate.

•A s with imaginary play and daily reading, create a daily “unplugged time” for the whole family. Bring back family dinners, family walks, etc. When children see parents being a strong role model for reasonable technology usage, it will be easier for them to follow.

All forms of technology can be beneficial and harmful at times. Too much information can make us confused, anxious, and lead to health problems.

Calling All Defenders of Wildlife!

PART 1: The Red Wolf

in to the weather forecast, and you’ll discover North Carolina’s predictions revolve around three sub-biomes, namely the coastal plains, Piedmont, and the mountains.

In our diverse and beautiful state, we possesses varieties of forest and non-forest ecosystems. To define our own biome, a temperate deciduous forest, we have four distinct seasons and consistent levels of precipitation. It’s no wonder our climate attracts diverse species of colorful birds and smaller mammals, as well as dangerous creatures, from the rattlesnake to the southern black widow. In the mountain regions, outside Winston-Salem, live black bears and bobcats. There also is lore to suggest the cougar may not be extinct, but resurging in numbers. Unless explicitly searching for the vanishing numbers of birds, insects, aquatic vertebrates, and mammals in the Piedmont Triad, you’ll not be aware of the names of creatures that no longer fly, swim, or walk. And our ecosystem is about to lose, once again, a member of the dog family, the red wolf.

A DESCRIPTION OF THE RED WOLF Mention the name coyote or grey wolf, and the instinctual reaction for humans is to want to hunt and kill the feared creature. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, humans succeeded in eliminating this wolf, described as extending four feet in length, weighing between 60 and 80 pounds, and standing over two feet tall.

It is similar in size to a German Shepherd.

In linking its morphology to other wolves, the identifiable characteristics of pointy ears and long slender legs make it often mistaken for a widely seen animal, the coyote. Through DNA studies, we know the

red wolf is in fact a 10,000-year-old creature with a genetic connection to coyotes and grey wolves. With little else known about its disposition, studies have discovered it has a shy and timid nature and avoids humans. In 1980, the species officially became extinct in the wild, while14 still survived at a wildlife rescue center.

FAITHFULLY UNITED From the bald eagle to the owl, swan, and beaver, many creatures find life mates.

Loyalty to the pack, comprising five to eight wolves, offers a challenge to this species, suggesting only the alpha pairs, or leaders, will produce puppies.

FORESTS AND LANDS Ask parents and grandparents what they recall about the Piedmont Triad. How many forests no longer exist? In removing large tracts of native oak, hickory, and pine forests with lush prairies and grasslands in the Triad to make room for shopping centers and housing developments, corporate buildings and transportation corridors, man has caused the biodiversity in our region to continue to shrink. A tree native to our area, the oak, for instance, supports an astounding 280 different species of insects and produces acorns to feed more than 100 vertebrate animals, such as blue jays, wood ducks, chipmunks, rabbits, opossums, and wild turkeys. In thinking about the future and the extent of a depleted ecosystem, how many common species will arrive on the endangered species list?

REINTRODUCING ANIMALS TO THE WILD Most creatures have a success rate when reintroduced to the wild. Elk, for instance, thrive in the Great Smoky Mountains

between North Carolina and Tennessee.

At the while, bald eagles, grey wolves, the California condor, bighorn sheep, blackfooted ferrets, and the pupfish are also increasing their populations within the national parks.

A large carnivore such as the red wolf must depend upon available prey. In the first two attempts, deforestation resulted in the starvation of the wolves. And, hunters devastated the remaining numbers. As of December 2019, the United States Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) monitors the activity of 11 known pairs.

COYOTE NUMBERS INCREASE The rare sighting of eastern cougars and the low numbers of the territorial red wolf population brought the coyote east in the early 1990s. Without competition for prey to dwindle their numbers, coyote sightings now cover 100 North Carolina counties, and they have dens in both large cities and natural landscapes, specifically, near highways, golf courses, parks, and housing developments. Usually unseen, activity occurs at dusk and ends at twilight.

USFWS From a territory spanning over one million miles, from Missouri and east to Pennsylvania and south to Texas and east to Florida, the endangered wolves are the only species to lose 99.7 percent of their historic territory. In the last report noted, from December 11th, 2019, three adult males will relocate to a North Carolina wildlife refuge in hopes of continuing fighting for the red wolf.

Saturday evening, January 18th, the A Cappella Jam for Hope was held at RJ Reynolds Auditorium in Winston-Salem. This is the 14th-annual presentation of the musical fundraiser, founded by Terry Hicks, which the students at RJ Reynolds High School hold for a charitable cause. This year the students chose Kaleideum to be the recipient of the funds from the event, which raised more than $7,000 for the museum.

A Cappella Jam for Hope is an “exhibition style” a cappella festival, where various groups come together and perform in order to raise money for a local non-profit,” says Josh Settlemyre, the chorus teacher at Reynolds High School. “This year’s event was made even more exciting because Matt Sallee from Pentatonix was the emcee.”

The Heroes of the Insect World

With

the existence of 5.5 million insect species, and 1.5 million families of beetles alone, the odds of an effective pest management program are low.

It first requires an understanding of what lures the beneficial insects. Biological control is a viable, long-term solution to allow ladybugs, praying mantis, spiders, and ground beetles, for example, to prey upon pests that destroy gardens.

BRACONID WASP: Insects often carry parasites on their backs, if you look closely. There are about 1,700 species of stingless Braconid wasps flying around, and their particular gift is to inject their eggs into aphids, beetles, caterpillars, hornworms, moths, weevils, and worms as hosts. With long antennae and the body as large as its head, this wasp can be confused with small flies. Consider growing nectar plants with small flowers to attract this wasp. Dill, parsley, and yarrow are perfect examples.

DRAGONFLY AND DAMSELFLY: Usually a sign of good luck, the dragonfly and damselfly are similar in body shape. The only difference is their size. Dragonflies, also known as the “devil’s darning needles,” possess toothed mandibles to consume larger prey such as ants, swarming termites, and beetles. Both, however, feed on mosquitoes, gnats, and flies. To welcome the beautiful fliers to your yard, consider building a water feature containing a clear surface area, vertical plants, and partial sunlight.

GROUND BEETLES: Under three centimeters in length, the beetle is dark in coloring with metallic hues of blue or green, red or copper. With three pairs of legs and two pairs of wings, it has prominent mandibles to consume a large variety of insects from ants to maggots, and slugs at night. Do not praise the ground beetle too highly, though; some species eat seeds, shoots, and the pollen of plants.

LADYBUGS: The bright red flyer with black spots is a welcome sight. Its blood is a repellent to predators, such as aphids, whiteflies, and Colorado potato beetles. One way to attract the beetle is to utilize plants that have either flowers or leaves in umbrella shapes, such as cilantro, clover, coreopsis, dill, fennel, geraniums, tansy, and yarrow.

While it’s an extra effort, spray the leaves of the plants to attract the ladybugs. By morning, you’ll have fewer aphids.

Distinguish Tip: If you see a shiny version of a ladybug in red, orange, brown, or tan coloring with black spots, it is an invasive species called the Asian Multicolored Lady Beetle. It has lessened our population of ladybugs. Be careful, it can bite and release a pungent odor.

PRAYING MANTIS: The large-bodied, green insect is an extreme predator against aphids, beetles, caterpillars, crickets, grasshoppers, and mosquitoes by day, and moths by night. Its camouflage conceals its location nestled in tall grasses or shrubs; yet, it likes dill, or cosmos and marigold flowers. Be wary of placing hummingbird feeders near your garden; the praying mantis will catch them, along with other winged insects, with ease.

SPIDERS: Running into a spider web is usually not a favorite pastime; however, the appearance of webs in your garden only benefits your plants, fruits, and vegetables. The spider is a hero in consuming the insects lured to your tomatoes.

In addition to feasting on mosquitoes, arachnids eliminate aphids, cockroaches, fruit flies, and grasshoppers.

Chemical Spray or Powder Warning The label of a popular pesticide may suggest it kills “more than 65 types” of insects; however, before purchasing, it is vital to learn more about the main ingredient. For instance, “Carbaryl” is used in powders, liquid concentrates, granules, or baits. The chemical kills by attacking the nervous system through touch or consumption. The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, and American universities arrived at the same results: exposure can cause nasal discharge, vomiting, severe convulsions, coma, and possibly death to humans, cats and dogs, rabbits, birds, and honeybees. Without researching “Sevin Dust,” shoppers may believe the label and spread it over trees, on gardens, and along fences without knowing the ramifications for the environment. Rather than buying a toxic chemical, use nature and natural means to resolve pesky problems!

Spring’s Hard Lesson

Springtime

is upon us. That beautiful time of year when flowers are in bloom, leaves are sprouting on the trees, and nature is coming out of its nest and showing itself again. It’s the cycle of rebirth that brings you out of the doldrums of winter’s cabin fever. For my son, however, this particular time of year poses an annual threat that he abhors—bees. It’s not exactly apiphobia or melissophobia, but it is disruptive, nonetheless. When he gets out of the car next to our giant holly bush or takes the dog out by the boxwood shrubs, he’s always cautious when he sees the bees flying around, gathering their nectar. No matter how many times I tell him just to blow past them and walk inside, he’s always hesitant and will go out of his way to avoid getting anywhere near them.

If you knew my history, you might be surprised that I’m so nonchalant about bees. After all, some twenty years ago or more, while I was mowing the yard of my new house for the first time, I had an experience I’ll never forget involving nature’s pollinators. I was mowing adjacent to a wooded area when I unknowingly ran over a yellow jacket nest in the ground. The push mower was loud, so I didn’t hear the buzzing sound around me. Seconds later, however, I felt something, only to look down and see two dozen bees or more in a ball in the middle of my chest. They were so thick they were crawling over one another in a frenzy to see who could sting me the most. I panicked, of course, and let go of the safety lever on the mower handle, shutting it off automatically, and ran to the back of the house, where I had the hose hooked up to the outside water faucet.

As I ran, I could feel the bees stinging me over and over through my clothes, while others were coming now and flying around my head and stinging my back in the process.

I’ve learned since that when yellow jackets sting you, they secrete a smell that other yellow jackets sense, and it sends them into attack mode. I was in a very threatening situation.

So I grabbed the hose, turned on the water full blast and immediately began dowsing myself from head to toe with a hard stream of water. The bees were stinging so intensely that they were actually stuck in my clothing and couldn’t free themselves to fly away. My wife came out when she saw the commotion, and before realizing it was bees, she thought I’d

suddenly gotten very hot and needed a quick cooling off. I yelled for her to stay back and get the broom. When she did, I told her to sweep the bees off of me that were dazed from all the water. I was afraid to touch them with my hands, since I’d been stung so many times already. She did so, and then looked at my beard and had a sick look on her face. When I yelled, “What?” she pointed at her jawline as if to tell me there was a bee stuck in my beard trying to get out, all the while it was stinging me. I screamed, “Get it!” So instead of sweeping my face, she promptly punched my face with the bristles of the broom. It didn’t work the first time, so I yelled for her to do it again. This time she punched my face so hard my head bounced backward. It worked, though, and finally, the bees were flying away from me.

Afterward, having been stung dozens of times, aside from the dull stinging sensation, I was surprised I hadn’t passed out and wasn’t in worse pain. After getting inside the house, my wife put some medicated ointment on my stings. Surprisingly, the medicine actually made the pain and itch unbearable. So, I went to the ER, and they gave me a shot of Benadryl, which helped soothe the pain and itch and relax me. In the end, I was okay.

You’d think after all that I’d be terrified of bees. And although I do have my fears (heights, for example), surprisingly, bees isn’t one. I can only attribute it to the fact that I’d been through this traumatic event and survived to tell about it. I realized I’d disturbed their nest. I knew why they were attacking so profusely and what it took to stop it. After making it through that many stings, I guess that’s why one little bee doesn’t get me riled up. This isn’t medical advice, by the way, because my uncle, a Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Golf Coach, got stung several times while outdoors and had to use an EpiPen from then on. If he ever gets stung again he may not survive. I was lucky.

The point is, though, that once we’ve been through a traumatic event and survived, it’s possible we garner the courage to face even bigger challenges later on. I don’t recommend this experience, but I can do landscaping work without panicking when an insect flies by. I still can’t convince my son, though.

Helping Your Grandchild Cope with the Loss of a Pet Recently, our beloved pet, Duncan, passed away. We had rescued him more than 14 years ago. Although his exact age was not known at the time, the best guess was that he was around two years old. He was close to his last days at the shelter when I went to see him, based on a picture. I had fallen in love with him, but it was our youngest daughter who wanted a pet while in college.

He seemed like the perfect choice.

There was no doubt he had had a rough start in life. His fur was quite matted; he had kennel cough and a lot of fleas. While he was being neutered, the vet addressed the cough and flea problem. We brought him to our home to recover and isolated him from our two dogs while his medicine brought him back to health, before taking him to our daughter.

While she was thrilled with this precious pup, her roommate, who had claimed to want a dog, decided she didn’t want this one. So, Duncan came back to us—a welcome addition to our home.

Then, for 14+ years, he was loved and taken care of. He was more than a pet; he was a member of our family. Our other two dogs had passed away, and we had added another, Matilda, who is now 10. She and Duncan were fast friends. His vim and vigor belied his advanced age, so the suddenness of his failing health was a shock to all. He passed away four days after a visit to the vet.

Days after his death, our daughter invited us to bring Matilda over to be with her dogs. Matilda had been at a loss, looking for Duncan in every room and wanting to be by our side constantly. Entering her home, our three-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter’s first question was, “Where’s Duncan?” It was a question we didn’t know how to answer. How do you explain death without scaring a young child?

Therapists have some answers that address this issue.

They are based on age, and although most make sense, it depends on the child as to which approach is best. It is important to note that every child is different and, as such,

their reactions to the news may also be different. Some of the professional suggestions include the following: If your pet is aging or a life-ending illness has been diagnosed, it may be time to begin discussing life cycles. If you are religious, perhaps by explaining it was the pet’s time to go be with God. As much as we wish the pet could be with us forever, they have certain life expectancies that are less than ours; but they will wait for us in heaven.

If a pet has been sick, explain that it was in a lot of pain and there was nothing that could be done to save them. Explain that as difficult as it is to let them go, it is unkind and selfish to make them suffer.

There are several excellent books written for children that may be easier for the child to understand in their presentation and pictures. They may also lead to several questions which will guide you in the knowledge of what additional explanations may be needed.

Most of all, break the news as gently as possible. Make sure you are there to hold them when they cry. Let them be sad.

It is sometimes better to listen more and say less. Remind them of the good times they had with the pet.

Make sure they know the death was not their fault. Never belittle their feelings—getting over it is personal and may take longer for one child than another. Treat the loss as a big deal, because it is to them. Most of all, be honest.

As winter fades, our thoughts and our foods warm up to vibrant pastel colors, lush gardens and Easter celebrations. These recipes are delightful treats to celebrate Easter or Spring kids’ parties, Easter egg hunts, and family celebrations. The fresh fruit Easter Egg Fruit Pizza and Bird Nests (made with the peanut butter option for protein) are great to enjoy for breakfast, brunch or dessert. We’ve included several time-saver tips!

BIRD NESTS INGREDIENTS: 40 Candy-coated milk chocolate eggs ¼ cup Peanut butter, creamy (or butterscotch chips) 4 cups Crispy chow mein noodles 3 Tbsp. Butter 3 cups Miniature marshmallows DIRECTIONS: 1. I n a saucepan on medium heat, stir marshmallows, butter, and peanut butter (or butterscotch chips) until completely melted, about 5 minutes.

2. I nto a large bowl, place chow mein noodles. Pour marshmallow mixture over noodles and stir to coat.

3. S pray hands with cooking spray or coat with butter, so the noodles will not stick to your hands. Scoop the mixture from the bowl with an ice cream scoop and hollow out each scoop to form a nest shape. Let set on wax paper.

4. P lace 4 chocolate eggs into each nest.

SPRING GARDEN CAKE

EASTER EGG FRUIT PIZZA

INGREDIENTS: 16 Strawberries, fresh, with tops 1 Box Strawberry, orange, chocolate or white cake mix Eggs and oil per cake-mix box instructions Green food coloring ½ cup Powdered sugar ½ tsp. Vanilla 1½ cups Coconut flakes 2 cups Chocolate sandwich cookie crumbs 1 cup Heavy cream cup Sour cream 6 oz. Orange candy melts

INGREDIENTS: 1 tube of refrigerated sugar cookie dough, or your favorite sugar cookie recipe 8 oz. Cream cheese, room temperature 1/3 cup Strawberry jam, room temperature 6 oz. Powdered sugar ¼ cup Apricot or Apple jelly 1 Tbsp. Water 8 cups total of Strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, green and red grapes, mango or other colorful fruit, washed and sliced

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 13 x 9” baking pan.

Prepare cake according to package directions.

2. Place candy melts into a small microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 1 –1½ minutes or until melted and smooth, stirring twice. Holding a strawberry by the leafy top, dip it into the melted candy mixture, leaving the leafy top exposed. Place onto a sheet of wax paper and let set. Repeat with remaining strawberries. (Optional: Place remaining melted candy mixture into a plastic sandwich bag and snip off a corner, then drizzle zigzag design onto coated strawberries to add texture, and let set.) Store in refrigerator.

3. Place coconut into a re-sealable plastic bag. Add a few drops of green food coloring. Seal the bag and knead the color into the coconut.

4. To make frosting, combine powdered sugar and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. On medium speed, beat with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.

Spread over cooled cake. Sprinkle generously with cookie crumbs to cover frosting.

5. Top cake with candy-coated strawberries on their sides at even intervals. Sprinkle the green coconut around the edge of the cake and put into rows around each strawberry.

(TIPS: To save time and ingredients, instead of making frosting, use 2½ cups thawed, whipped dessert topping or 16 oz. can of vanilla frosting.)

DIRECTIONS: 1. P reheat oven to 350° and line a large baking sheet with parchment. Roll out the dough between two sheets of parchment or wax paper, until an even thickness (your choice of a somewhat thicker, cake-like cookie base or a thin, crispier cookie crust). Use a knife to trim into an oval “egg” shape.

2. Transfer the cookie to the baking sheet and bake until a light golden color and puffed, and set into the center, about 15 minutes.

3. I n a medium bowl, using a mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Mix in strawberry jam and powdered sugar until blended.

4. S pread the frosting in a thin layer onto the cooled cookie crust base, leaving an even bare edge all around. Layer the cut fruit, one fruit at a time, into stripes or shapes.

5. I n a small microwave-safe bowl, stir the water into the apricot or apple jelly and microwave 15 seconds, and stir until fluid and smooth with the consistency of a thin gel. If too thick, add a bit more water and stir to thin it out. Using a pastry brush, brush this glaze over the fruit. This creates a nice shine and prevents the fruit from drying out or wilting.

(TIPS: The Easter Egg Fruit Pizza is best enjoyed the day it is made. Cookie dough can be made days in advance and kept refrigerated. Cookie crust can be baked days in advance.

Frosting can be made days in advance, if kept refrigerated. To save time, substitute canned cream cheese frosting or other white or strawberry frosting.)

It read, “Just one won’t hurt.” I was waiting in line to pay for the sensible, nutritious salad I had just ordered when those four little words caught my eye and nearly convinced me to buy a cookie. But then I realized that the “Just one won’t hurt” mentality is the cause of my being overweight! In actuality, the path to destruction is laid with statements like, “Just one won’t hurt.”

Satan puts a direct target on their backs, because he knows that he can wreak havoc in your church by having your pastor’s kids mess up.

The

CS Lewis was definitely on to something when he said, “Good and evil both increase at compound interest.

That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance.” Now, obviously, one cookie is not a bad thing. But the destructive things we do rarely happen after just one bad choice.

No, it’s usually a chain of bad choices…just one cookie, just one drink, just one impure thought, just one little lie, just one item purchased on the credit card. Those “just ones” rarely stand alone.

How do we break free from these bad choices? Listen to this advice from 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

So, if the “Just one more’s” have brought you to an unhappy place in your life, take comfort in knowing that God is ready to supply you with the power you need to break the chains that bind you. Ask him for forgiveness for the bad decisions you’ve made and for the strength and will to choose the right things in the future.

Do you realize the pressures these kids face every day? One PK recently shared that the coworkers at her part-time job in the mall had decided their life’s goal was to show this “goodie two-shoes” all the things she had been missing in her 16 years of life, and were determined to “corrupt” her. Unfortunately they succeeded in their efforts, and there were long-lasting consequences that affected this girl’s church and the pastor’s family.

Thankfully, through the prayers of many, this young woman is now living for and serving the Lord in another ministry her father helped to grow. We praise God for redemptive stories like this, but we are all too aware of the targets on the backs of our PKs, and the destructive battle for their souls.

Will you be the one to pray for God’s protection around these PKs and their families? Your timely prayers may be just what’s needed to save someone else from a bad decision that could lead to a life of pain and regret.

I Have a Purpose

“Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.” ~ Victor Frankl, Existential Psychologist and Author of Man’s Search for Meaning I believe there is a crisis happening in our culture. I don’t have any data to back that up, though there may be some out there. I am sure it is a basic struggle of humanity and don’t know if it is more of a crisis now, as opposed to other times. All I know is that people are suffering from a crisis of purpose in their lives.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor and former professional minister, I have encountered people with all manner of issues: stress, depression, anxiety, anger, suicidal thoughts, relational problems, self-defeating/ damaging behaviors, substance abuse. I could list more, but you get the point—there is a lot of bad stuff happening with people.

As a counselor, I believe that I don’t work with anyone I consider mentally ill. All of my clients, no matter which issue they face from the list above, are just regular people like myself. (Well, there are some who know me who might say that standard isn’t really that high.)

Several years ago, I started piecing together a theme I was hearing from all my clients, no matter their age, their gender, their income, their career, their race, their religion, or any other category. At the time, I called it a crisis of identity; people were just unsure of who they are and/or hiding who they are.

The more I have learned about and heard from people, I have decided the overarching crisis is having no sense of purpose and meaning in their lives. I say this because I have been there more than once in life myself and know what that does for your mental/physical health, social life, motivation, you name it. I also say this because people are starting to explicitly say, “I don’t have any purpose in life.” Some people just need it spelled out for them.

When writing this piece, I started reading about statistics on purpose in life, why people don’t discover their purpose, and all the benefits having a purpose can have. I quickly realized that not only was I bored to tears, but to my clients, and me for that matter, statistics and research about purpose are meaningless!

Purpose is deeply personal and individualized.

So I will share my viewpoint on purpose and meaning in life in hopes that maybe it could help someone reading this to seek their own.

I decided some time back that a purpose in life does not come from a major revelation, is not necessarily tied to my career, is not some big thing for everyone to see, and probably will not come with accolades, awards, or praise.

Instead, it is a result from the everyday things I do to make it purposeful.

When I was a school counselor, I was walking a secondgrade student back to class one day when she looked up at me and said, “Thank you for helping me, Mr. Nuckolls.”

And at the time I had become a little jaded in my work, but seven and a half years of my life became defined in that moment. I have a purpose.

A few years ago, I encountered an older man in the grocery store and for no reason I can recall a conversation just started. He talked a lot about his life and being alone after the death of his wife and ended it with a simple, “Nice talking with you.” I have a purpose.

I lamented in a recent sermon about how I, a Christian, could point to very few close non-Christian friends in my life. A number of people spoke, e-mailed, or called afterward to say they realized they were at the same place and needed to change as well. I have a purpose.

My five-year-old son frequently calls out, “Dad, will you spend time with me?” We sit on the floor, building all manner of things. I have a purpose.

There might be some grand purpose for me at some point in life. I want to get one of my books published, I’d love to make a living speaking to encourage people to better their lives, and owning a Ferrari would certainly do a lot for me.

For now, I have to get ready to go to lunch with my wife, which we seldom get to do, just the two of us. I have a purpose.

The Arts at Ardmore Series is described as the place where community, faith and the arts come together.

For three years, Diane Guthrie, committee member of Arts at Ardmore and member of Ardmore Baptist Church, has been working on Ballet Magnificat!, a performance she is excited and proud to bring to an audience of all ages!

Ballet Magnificat! is known as America’s Premier Christian Ballet Company and was founded in 1986. In a relatively short time, this company has performed original productions for 12 million people in North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. With more than 200 programs performed around the world annually, Ballet Magnificat! is a remarkable success and a true honor to host here in Winston-Salem.

According to the event’s website, attendees will “Experience the Exodus from Egypt in a whole new way with Ballet Magnificat!’s popular performance, ‘Deliver Us!’ Under the blazing Egyptian sun, the enslaved Jewish people cry out for a deliverer.

One man, Moses, challenges Pharaoh and leads the people to freedom. Set to the soundtrack from DreamWorks’ The Prince of Egypt, this riveting true story from Exodus will jump off the stage and into your life! Ballet Magnificat!’s high energy and powerful performance shatters the stereotypical

image of ballet and guarantees to captivate audiences of all ages with a kaleidoscope of movement, costumes, lights and sound.”

It is important to note and emphasize the difference between Ballet Magnificat! and a stereotypical ballet performance.

The talent and expertise of the dancers is second to none, but the evangelical mission of the company is what truly leads to the experience of a lifetime. It is the hope of all involved that the performance reaches those of all ages, those interested in dance now and in the future, those of all backgrounds, as well as those with diverse interests and experiences. A Good Name

“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”

~ Proverbs 22:1

Both riches (silver and gold) and an honorable reputation (loving favor and respect) are good. But if one must choose between them, Solomon, who wrote this proverb, says, “Choose a good name.” A good name is what we will be remembered by, not how much wealth we had.

No matter how hard we work, no matter how much wealth and notoriety we accumulate, no matter how many frequent flyer miles we log, it is always a fair question to ask, “What will I leave behind?”

What we leave behind is called legacy. It’s more than bank accounts, IRAs, and real estate. It is more than “Employee of the Year” plaques. It is more than newspaper clippings, and certainly, more than a wooden box planted six feet deep in the earth when it is all over. More than a fleeting memory, a legacy is an indelible impression for future generations. It is the mark we make in life that lives far longer than forty, fifty, or eighty years. It’s the footprints we leave at the workplace, in the neighborhood, and in the church. It’s the fingerprints we leave in the lives of those we love. It’s the way we do things and the reason we do them. Legacy is as close as we can get to immortality this side of eternity.

Deep in the soul of every person is the desire to leave behind a good name—a name that rings true, a name that makes

people nod in affirmation and respect. Few people lust for a name that makes others stand up and clap. For most of us, a pat on the back from a family member is fine. If we hear a word of encouragement, it may be enough to get our heart out of rhythm. For a person to be able to look into the eyes of his/her family and be able to see them looking back with honor, admiration, trust, and loyalty—that would be a dream come true. That is a living legacy, and that is what every person longs for and holds dear to.

A living legacy doesn’t grow in a vacuum. Neither does it grow in a petri dish. A living legacy is the product of the consistent hard choices we have been talking about— integrity, sensitivity, humility, fidelity, responsibility, and charity. It comes from God and from always having a heart for our fellow man. There are no shortcuts. No such thing as microwave maturity. A good name doesn’t grow on trees and it is not for sale at any price. It is not just given to an elite few, nor is it withheld from others. It is held out to each of us—ours for the taking—as long as we are willing to make allowances, sacrifices, and always extend ourselves in love.

This proverb points out that a reputation has more value than possessions or wealth. A good name cannot be replaced easily, not even with lots of money. So the question is: What are we living for? Is it to have as much as we can accumulate to live a comfortable earthly existence? Will any of it matter after we are gone? Or, is it a commitment to love and serve others with a benevolent heart and be remembered for all eternity for our contribution to the benefit of their lives?

10 Tips for New Moms

Sixteen years ago, I gave birth to my firstborn. There have been many highs and lows, and I still can’t quite decide which stage of parenting has been the most difficult thus far! I do know that we’ve survived each stage by having patience, and by taking advice from our pediatricians and friends.

Looking back, there were some tips that helped make that first stage of parenting a bit easier. I had one very easy baby and one colicky-wanna-pull-your-hair-out-baby. Many of these tips worked for both.

If you are expecting or have a newborn in your home right now, congrats to you! I hope these tips will help save you some frustration in the months ahead. For the rest of our readers who have “Been there, done that,” I would love for you to share your tips in the comment section below. The more help we can give to a new mom, the better!

10 Tips for New Moms: 10. The cuter the burp cloth, the worse it actually works. Buy a package of cloth diapers and use those as the burp cloths on a daily basis. Save the cute monogrammed ones for special occasions.

9. When your baby is overly tired, and you have tried to get her to sleep without success, try this—hold her sideways in your arms, bounce gently and lightly blow on her eyes. When you blow, she will close her eyes, and many times, she will realize how good that feels and actually keep them closed!

8. As often as possible, put your baby down for naps and nighttime while he is still awake. Place him in the crib or bassinet, tell him it’s time to go to sleep and leave the room.

Most babies will play for a while and eventually fall asleep.

If they make noises or sound like they are crying, do not go in right away. They need to learn to put themselves to sleep.

(I’m not saying to give up on your snuggle time, but save that for when it is not time to go to sleep!)

7. One of my favorite bits of advice was from The Baby Whisperer. It is called EASY (Eating, Activity, Sleeping, You). I love this simple plan for a baby’s schedule. You can start this routine as soon as you come home from the hospital. This plan is a recurring period that is usually about three hours

long. It is a middle-ground as far as baby regimens go, and is in-between “tough-love” and “on-demand.” Your child will learn that after they eat, they get to play (which sometimes just means a few minutes in a bouncy seat), and then after they play, it is nap time. The child learns to put herself to sleep without being breastfed or needing a bottle. Babies usually don’t like surprises, so this will get your baby used to the natural order of things. I loved this strategy, and it worked well for me. I could write an entire blog on this EASY method, so I would suggest purchasing the book and reading up on it for yourself!

6. Don’t assume that every time your baby cries, she is hungry!

There are many other reasons a baby may cry, so keep to your feeding schedule as much as possible. (But also trust your gut. Mothers have intuition for a reason!)

5. Don’t take tags off items until you actually use them. I know you had your baby shower, and you can’t wait to put all the clothes into drawers, sheets on the crib, stuffed animals around the room, etc. All babies are different, which means they grow differently and enjoy different products and toys.

We went through three different bottle types and probably three pacifier types, as well, before we found ones that worked for our first child. If you keep items in their packages until you are ready to use them, you still have the opportunity to return them! This is especially true for clothing, because more than likely, you will have an abundance of clothes in one size and not many in the others.

4. Don’t register for blankets. You will get a thousand anyway.

3. Accept help. Someone wants to bring you dinner? Bring it on!

Someone wants to babysit while you take a nap? Yes, please!

Don’t try to be SuperMom. Take the help when you can get it!

You need it more than you realize you do.

2. Don’t micromanage your spouse. If your spouse does not change the diaper the way you would or hold the baby the way you would, that is okay. Remember to keep things in perspective. As long as your spouse’s method is not going to harm the baby—let it go.

1. Advice will come from everywhere, but I found that the best advice is always from your own mom.

Local Business Owner Wins a Trip to the Super Bowl

you love football, the best experience as a fan would be going to the Super Bowl, but for many reasons, that dream is usually out of reach. For Simon Shaw, owner of PEST-X Exterminating, a contest brought his dream of being Super Bowl-bound into reality.

It Takes a Village to Get to the Super Bowl Simon’s journey to Super Bowl LIV began with a contest offered by a Raleigh, NC, company, Coalmarch, a digital marketing, business strategy, and development business that provides professional services to pest control and lawn care companies throughout the United States.

“In early November, when I learned of the contest, I contacted my Branch Manager in the Burlington, NC, office, Rob Hardin.

In addition to working for me at PEST-X, Rob also has a ‘Christian Rap’ ministry in which he writes, produces, and performs music in churches all over the East Coast.

I asked Rob if he wanted to go to the Super Bowl, and, of course, he did, so I told him about the contest. Rob created the content, provided the background music from a previous promo video, and he wrote the commercial that included

himself as a large roach, along with his three children who were in the video as an ant, bee, and a mouse. A professional videographer shot the commercial,” recalled Simon.

The contest was open to attendees of the Coalmarch management conference that is held annually in Raleigh, NC. Companies from all over the country were in attendance. The premise of the contest was to create a 30- second commercial about your business that you would run during the Super Bowl if you had an unlimited budget. Once the commercial was actually created and submitted, then approved, voting was opened for 15 days prior to the annual conference held in early December. Needless to say, Simon and Rob’s endeavor, with the support and voting of family, friends, customers, and vendors, was rewarded.

Making the Most of an Experience of a Lifetime The Super Bowl trip included two endzone seats, a four-night stay the four-star Historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, FL, a round of golf on the famed Donald Ross course on the hotel property, a souvenir package, a pregame party with Dan Marino, former Hall of Fame QB for

the Miami Dolphins, and pre and postgame transportation to the stadium from the hotel.

“Since my wife, Denise, isn’t a big football fan, she was supportive of me taking Rob, who was integral in the winning of the contest. The experience was phenomenal.

We enjoyed Miami and the Cuban cuisine.

On Saturday, we rented a car and took a four-hour ride all the way through the Florida Keys, ending up in Key West.

Breakfast in Key Largo and dinner in Key West with Key Lime pie is a pretty good day,” Simon said.

Simon and Rob were split in their support of the 49ers and the Chiefs; Simon had met George Kittle, receiver for the 49ers, at a wedding in 2018, and spent time talking to him, and Rob was pulling for the Chiefs.

In the end, the Chiefs took home the win, and Simon and Rob got a football fan’s dream come true…all the way around, everyone was a winner!

MiniPowdered Sugar Donut Muffins

BY SARA WILES You can never say no to those snowy covered donuts staring at you? These minidonut muffins are not filled with anything, but they come with a lot of sweet flavor and cakey texture. The donut muffins (named muffins because of their more cake-like texture) are made with whole wheat white flour, are incredibly soft, and very moist, thanks to the creamed butter and milk in the batter.

INGREDIENTS:

1/3 cup (5 tablespoons) unsalted butter,

1. P reheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray mini-muffin pan with cooking spray and set aside.

2. I n a large bowl, using a handheld or stand mixer, cream 1/3 cup butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and milk. Gently stir in flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt by hand.

3. Spoon batter into prepared muffin tin—about ⅔ of the way full.

4. Bake for 11-12 minutes. They are done with the edges beginning to brown and the centers set. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes.

5. While the muffins are cooling, prepare the topping. Melt 3 Tablespoons butter for about 30 seconds in a small bowl in the microwave. Stir and stick back in the microwave if not fully melted. Pour the powdered sugar in a separate bowl. Fully submerge each donut into the melted butter followed by the powdered sugar. Coat all sides generously and evenly with powdered sugar. Set upright on a cooling rack.** ** Donut muffins taste best when eaten on the same day but will stay fresh in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
