This

will mark the third “From the Heart” I have written since COVID-19 shut down our local community and it continues to wreak havoc on our lives. For the most part, I have looked for the ways it has brought folks together and I continue to do so, but I’m not blind to all the negative it has brought as well. As with all the political rhetoric, I just wish folks could respect each other’s feelings and viewpoints. “We’re all in this together!” is a phrase we constantly hear, but it’s not really quite true. We may ALL be in this together but we are NOT in the same boat. Some folks are in a nice yacht while others are in a canoe with a hole in it. We are not all in the same financial situation to withstand this. Whether you are of the mindset to shelter-in-place till a cure is found, or ready to get back to normal, we just need to understand that we aren’t all coming from the same place. Having varying viewpoints and ideas is what makes this crazy world we live in such a great place.

So please try to respect that and be kind!

Our June issue features Kristin Henry, owner of Club Pilates. Her beautiful studio is set up perfectly to social distance and they are ready to welcome you back as soon as they can! While everyone has been affected by the crisis, I would say our local small businesses are some of the most affected.

Please support them as much as possible as things open back up!

I want to congratulate our 2020 high school and college graduates! I am so sorry this has happened to you and your families. It is heartbreaking to me that you won’t get that special moment you’ve worked for. I’m not going to try and sugarcoat it, it stinks and it’s certainly not fair! But I have no doubt you will emerge a stronger group of young adults that will make our world a better place for future generations to come. I want to give a special shoutout to my niece Maggie who graduates from high school this year. Oh, the places you will go! We love you!

June 22nd-25th is Pollinator Week!

to cheer on bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial creatures! National pollinator week is just around the corner! Through the study of pollinators, we can understand the relationship between insects and crops, flowers, trees, and plants producing oxygen. The week of June 22nd offers an educational period to understand why insects are in a state of decline eight times faster than mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Honeybees “God save the Queen” is an expression of prayer in hopes the Queen of the bees holds her colony together and thrives. A second vital role within a colony is the “forager.” She flies in search of bright ultraviolet colors, which appear similar to an electric field. Flowers have a connection to the pollinator’s nervous system, a type of static electricity. With a clear distinction between light and dark, she can see the edges of petals and smell the aromatic promise of the sweet nectar. The tiny bristling hairs which cover the abdomen and legs respond by rising to collect balls of pollen. She bounces from flower to flower, drinking her fill, roughly 0.16 of a teaspoonful, before returning to the hive to perform the symbolic waggle dance, encouraging other foragers to seek the food source. The dance lasts as long as the flight. Before departing, the foragers will taste the promised honey.

A HELPING HAND: One distinction of the honeybee is it has four wings, and hair covering their black and yellow bodies. If

you are fortunate to see her, do not shy away. Place two fairly tall rocks in your birdbath to ensure the smaller-winged flyers can have access to water.

vegetables. Consider expanding your yields by adding varieties of fruit trees, blueberry or blackberry bushes, or native trees, such as oaks and maples.

Offering Pollinators a Welcoming Environment Witnessing the swooping dives of birds, the slow fluttering of colorful butterflies, and the zips and flits of dragonflies heightens the enjoyment of being outdoors. Just think that pollinators comprise 200,000 different species! Flies, beetles, moths, and bats are part of the list, as well as dogs and cats and other mammals. As the pollen clings to an animal’s coat, it brushes against another plant to aid the ecosystem!

PROVIDE SHELTER: With an adequate source of food and water available to pollinators, the next addition is housing.

While butterfly and bat houses are distinctive in design, other types of specific birds or owl structures require specific measurements, which may include a covered roof and perch. Check online for instructions.

PLANT A WILDFLOWER GARDEN: Find a good location with direct sun and away from traffic to create an uncultivated garden of native pollinating flowers. The first step is to remove rocks and clumps of grass before adding compost. Tilling encourages substantial areas in the soil to loosen and become workable, which enables root systems to flourish. Wet the soil thoroughly. Use a clean bucket to combine equal amounts of sand, perlite, and potting soil. (Four parts soil will equal one part seed.) Stir gently with a trowel.

Take handfuls of the combined soil and seed mix and toss. If necessary, use your hand to spread the top of the soil evenly, or use a rake. Cover with compost. Water daily until the seeds are established, and several times a week throughout the summer. Be patient! And, soon, a variety of pollinators will arrive!

Plant, Plant, Plant!

Pollinators help more than 75% of all flowering plants. Without our winged flyers, it would be difficult to enjoy many of our favorite foods that grow on fruit trees and bushes, and especially crops.

Self-pollinating plants like peppers and tomatoes, for instance, cannot produce without the help of a winged flyer. Spring and Fall are ideal seasons to plant

The birds and bees need your help! With an effort to provide water and food stations, planting crops and establishing wildflower gardens, flowering bushes, vines, and trees, you can encourage pollinator diversity and abundance!

Forsyth Woman and Family magazines encourage their readers to get out in the city by scheduling monthly “Kids’ Morning Out” and “Girls’ Night Out” events.

at a new city creates an instantaneous spectrum of emotions, ranging from overwhelming stress to the anticipation of meeting new people. With the convenience of online access, contacting municipal services and cable providers, as well as researching the best coffee shops, might begin the long list of items to check off. Within a short period, you’ll be using side roads and avoiding heavy traffic like a local!

WELCOME CENTER In Southern communities, visitors will find hospitality centers derive from a few of the oldest businesses within a town, such as the fire department, funeral home, church, the public library, country stores, and diners. Residents will kindly offer recommendations, tell you whom to speak with, and provide a wealth of information.

FARMER’S MARKETS From May through October, the Piedmont Triad offers numerous outdoor venues that feature a variety of local, fresh produce, seasonal plants, herbs, and handmade crafts.

NC COOPERATIVE EXTENSION Do you love the topics affiliated with horticulture and agriculture? Then Google “NC Cooperative Extension.” Each county has a page full of opportunities to attend classes and mini-seminars, or join monthly associations for beekeepers, master gardeners, or cattleman. With so many options available for adults, children, too, have great opportunities to get involved!

A STATE FOR VETERANS For veterans transitioning to the Piedmont area, you’ll find a great movement occurring in the well-connected state of North Carolina. Beyond the extensive list of organizations, groups, meetings, and activities, new arrivals will quickly connect with Veterans in the community. Use key phrases such as “Veterans’ Day Events across the Triad,” “Veteran Breakfasts, or “NC Veterans’ Coffee Shop.”

RICH HISTORIC PLACES Turn the corner or take a wrong turn, and often a driver, biker, or walker will find a historical landmark. It could be a barn or house, park, or trail. History surrounds you. The best way to start learning about your new home state’s history and culture is to visit bedroom communities, such as Clemmons, Kernersville, Mount Airy, and Danbury.

FROM MOUNTAINS TO OCEAN With a span 500 miles long and 150 miles wide, North Carolina has plenty of room for engaging in recreational and educational activities across 100 counties. You could catch a ferry to Bald Head Island or climb 214 spiral stairs to the top of Bodie Island lighthouse. Consider the thrill of walking across a 224-foot suspension bridge or the relaxation in visiting a winery. Buy tickets to attend the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, or schedule a tour at the Biltmore Estate. North Carolina has everything you need!

MEETUP Among your new-to-town connections is a social media tool called “Meetup,” which allows you to find a group planning to go kayaking or dancing, for example. If you enjoy meeting new people, you’ll undoubtedly find a group that appeals to your interests!

Flaxseed Meal 1 /8 tsp. Kosher Salt 3 Tbsp. Olive Oil 1 /3 cup Maple Syrup, or Honey 11/4 cup Zucchini, grated 1 /3 cup Applesauce 1 cup Almond Milk 1 /2 cup Dark or Semisweet Chocolate Chips, preferably mini 1-2 tsp. Vanilla Extract INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 425F.

Family nights are precious moments to make lasting memories, whether it’s the laughter as you make these delicious treats from scratch in the kitchen or the relaxing time watching a new movie together.

7. Keep the muffins in the oven! Reduce the oven temperature to 350F, then bake for an additional 12-13 minutes, or until a toothpick comes clean from the center.

2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flaxseed meal with two tablespoons of warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes.

3. In the meantime, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.

4. Add the maple syrup, shredded zucchini, applesauce, almond milk, olive oil, and vanilla extract into the flaxseed bowl.

Mix well.

5. Pour the wet zucchini mixture over the flour mixture, add in the chocolate chips. Then fold to incorporate all ingredients together.

6. Evenly pour the batter into a 10-12 lined cupcake or muffin pan. Bake for 5 minutes.

8. Allow the muffins to cool for at least 5 minutes, then enjoy!

miraculous, fragile creature is a sight to behold.

It weighs about as much as a paper clip. In the Mexican forests, the branches of fir trees once bowed, ever so slightly, from the numbers of hibernating Monarchs. Today, the species is on the verge of extinction.

Populations are down by 90% in the last 20 years. In addition to the lack of its primary food source, milkweed, other factors include the depletion of forests and grasslands. While social and government agencies seek the goal of saving the Monarch, you, too, can become an advocate to join the effort. And, through expanding your gardens, you’ll be saving more than one essential winged flyer!

The Value of Milkweed Plants In nurseries, how often do you see the native plant labeled “Common Milkweed?” A rare find indeed; however, it grows wild in fields, alongside roads, and can be discovered in packets at seed swaps. It once grew alongside agricultural fields until toxic pesticides impacted its ability to flourish, and it did not re-emerge. The Monarch relies on this plant that grows up to six feet tall to eat and lay eggs on its broad leaves. The clusters of white or purple flowers blooming from June through August contain nectar for all pollinators. And, ladybugs are just one beneficial insect that feasts upon the aphids. By late summer, pods form and burst to spread seeds and multiply, which makes it difficult to remove, once established.

Unfortunately, it has a negative reputation. This plant, along with daffodils and daylilies, hydrangea and azaleas, is toxic to dogs and cats. To humans, the milkweed sap can irritate the skin by producing a slight rash.

Create a Wildflower Garden Unlike a patch of earth with bunches of flowers meticulously placed to create an appealing landscape, a sunny location full of wildflowers does not require cultivation. The untamed nature of pollinating plants growing freely in the wild

allows a quick spread of self-seeding flowers. Fortunately, seed mixes are readily available for our zone, containing the variety of annual, biannual, and perennial flowers that appeal to pollinators.

The easy solution for a plant like milkweed is to include it in your wildflower garden! And, welcome the Monarchs, too!

Avoid Using Pesticides Warning labels, at times, do not divulge the entire truth. As you start shopping for a potentially safe herbicide or pesticide, it is important not to be rash, and to research the ingredients first. Despite weeds having a multiple herbicide resistance, which implies they require more than two or more chemicals to eliminate, plus, perhaps, repeated treatments, the flowers, on the other hand, do not have the same resistance to toxic ingredients, namely, 1,3-dichloropropene, glyphosate, and pelargonic acid.

WARNING: Be wary of purchasing plants that contain Glyphosate herbicides. While it may reduce weeds upon planting, it can cause the premature death of surrounding plants, especially the milkweed.

ALTERNATIVE: Try a DIY insecticide combining one cup of oil with one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid; then, pour four teaspoons into a spray bottle with two cups of warm water.

Afterward, spray on the leaves to reduce the infestation of harmful insects.

Calling All Butterflies!

When the butterflies come, witness the brilliant colors of orange and yellow, and white dots on black arrive fluttering through the yard. No matter where you live, consider planting native milkweed and nectar plants. She’ll come attracted by the sweet aroma of the milkweed plant to lay eggs and establish a colony for the future! Join the cause! Advocate for school pollinator gardens and in local parks. It’s possible to increase the numbers of Monarchs. It all begins by planting milkweed!

Family Services Launches New Website amid Covid-19 Crisis

For

many of us, this year is nothing like we imagined it would be. So many big events, celebrations and even family reunions have been canceled.

Right now, the most privileged of us are safe at home. But that’s not the story for everyone.

For victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault, home can be one of the most dangerous places during the COVID-19 crisis. Increased anxiety and depression are also symptoms of self isolation.

As our community continues to face unprecedented challenges during this pandemic, Family Services has launched a new landing page, strongathome.org, to promote our ongoing services in domestic violence, sexual assault, and counseling.

Our message is simple: • YOU ARE NOT ALONE • WE ARE HERE WHEN YOU NEED US. • THIS IS WHAT WE DO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE While Family Services has not yet seen a visible uptick in the number of local domestic violence reports, our experts at Safe On Seven say they have reason to believe that cases are, in fact, on the rise.

Calvary Day School Adds Transitional Kindergarten Program

BY GENNIE TAYLOR Calvary Day School is committed to meeting the needs of all of our students and families. In an effort to reach all of our students where they are in their development journey, Calvary has identified the need for the addition of a full-day Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program. This program is specifically tailored to provide students with an opportunity to ease into Kindergarten with the introduction of Transitional Kindergarten.

“Transitional Kindergarten gives students another year to experience life and explore the world around them before jumping on the ‘formal’ school train,” explained CDS Lower School Principal Mary Jane Morgan.

“Some students need the extra year to mature socially and emotionally, while others need the ‘gift of time’ to develop their academic skills in a playbased environment.”

Also, Morgan noted, in a world where focus and distractibility issues are growing, some research has shown a decrease in inattention and hyperactivity ratings at the ages of 7 and 11 for students who delayed starting kindergarten.

“Transitional Kindergarten classes will provide opportunities for positive socialization, hands-on learning, and emergent literacy,” Morgan added. Transitional Kindergarten is an all-day program that provides an opportunity to ease the transition from preschool to Kindergarten while experiencing a longer day, lunch at school, and designated rest time. While academic objectives are similar to traditional Kindergarten, with small class size and more individualized instruction, Transitional Kindergarten provides an

environment conducive to social and emotional growth and maturity. This allows students time for development without repeating a grade and/ or curriculum.

As CDS Preschool Coordinator Mary Lynn England summed up, “Transitional Kindergarten is perfect for any child who needs a little more time before entering a formal Kindergarten room, but needs more challenging objectives than a traditional four-year-old program.”

CDS also offers a variety of weekly special classes to develop students in all areas. The specials offered include Chapel, Art, Media Center, P.E., and Music. With the Transitional Kindergarten program, students will begin attending weekly specials midyear as they become more acquainted with the all-day program atmosphere.

To be eligible for this class, the student must turn five years old by August 1, 2020, or must have completed a fouryear-old program.

CDS Admissions Director Becky Wood said, “We are always excited to share new educational options with our prospective CDS families. The addition of the new TK program in preschool will give them one more choice to fit the needs of older students who may not be ready for traditional Kindergarten.”

Students in the new program will also be able to participate in the Calvary Before & After School Care Program, allowing flexibility for their family, if needed.

Climbing Ready to test out your climbing skills? While the activity is free, all climbers seeking the experience of scaling up the 1,455-foot cliff must submit a climbing and rappelling registration form before following the “white diamond” trail marker, 2.20 miles, to Cook’s Wall. With a copy of the registration form in your pocket, it is vital to know that individuals are responsible for personal equipment, and climb at their own risk. Climbing without a rope or harness is discouraged. NC State parks do not install fixed anchors on routes, nor approve the creation of new courses.

Swimming On days when the body desires cool water, there are two distinct options available at Hanging Rock State Park.

THE LOWER CASCADES: A popular location for visitors and hikers, a short looping trail leads to the highest waterfall. Be wary if accompanied by young or older members of the family who have difficulty walking. The trail ends at a long wooden staircase leading to the base of the waterfall.

Despite the spectacular waterfall and rock formations, there are numerous safe areas for toddlers to splash in, or older children to enjoy sliding down the rocks. (Reminder: bring extra water containers to stay hydrated.)

THE LAKE: Arriving at the beach house, the cost of admission is $6 for adults (13 and older), and $4 for children (starting at the age of three).

The State provides lifeguards to ensure all swimmers are safe. Visitors will appreciate an extensive beachfront with opportunities to sit shaded by tall, mature trees. Capable swimmers can swim beyond the ropes to enjoy two diving boards, one at each end.

DIY Gifts for “End of Year” Teacher Gifts Painted Planter

are responsible for helping our children learn and grow in this crazy world and are infamously underpaid and often under-appreciated. Onset of Covid-19 and e-learning during quarantine will most assuredly bring about a new appreciation for these superheroes who are doing so much for the future of our country.

Our school year may have ended abruptly but that doesn’t mean we can’t drop off an “end of year” appreciation gift. If you’re looking for something beyond (or in addition to) a gift card, helping your child create a DIY appreciation gift for their teachers will go that extra mile to show your gratitude for all that they do.Teacher Survival Kit Find a cute Mason jar, preferably wide-mouthed, and then fill it with things that can help teachers relax and unwind. These things can include bath products, such as bath bombs, scented bath salts, face masks, scented lotions, etc. Other good additions are chapstick, chocolate, tea bags, and ibuprofen. When this is all assembled, have your kids write out a few nice notes to put in as well to remind their teacher how much they are appreciated.

On a simple terra-cotta planter, you can pick up at any home improvement store, first paint the base with black chalkboard paint.

Follow the directions for how many coats and priming are needed—this can differ by brand. When the base is dry, pull out your acrylic paints from your craft room and paint a yellow ruler along the top tip of the planter. Write in chalk, “Thanks for helping me grow” on the base, and then let your child transplant a live plant of their choice in the planter, preferably something hard to kill.

Framed Affirmation Just like all of us, teachers sometimes have hard days and need to be reminded that what they are doing is important.

Take a “scrap painting” (one done by a child that you couldn’t bring yourself to get rid of and has been in a stack on top of your fridge collecting dust) and cut it out to be the size of whatever frame you have chosen. For a desk affirmation, 4x6 or 5x7 is a recommended frame-size starting point. Find an affirmation that you feel resonates with the teaching profession and write it on top of your child’s painting, then frame it. Examples of affirmations are: “What I do is important,” “I am making a difference in my students’ lives,” and, “I believe in myself and my life’s work.”

Cookie in a Jar Create a cookie in a jar by simply adding all the dry ingredients for your favorite cookie recipe into a Mason jar. Put this into a cute mixing bowl with a nice spatula, pot holders, and the recipe for the cookies, including the wet ingredients and cooking instructions. Top it all off with a sign that says, “Thanks for helping me become one smart cookie,” with your child’s signature.

Mini DIY At the end of the day, the most important thing is to make sure that your child’s teachers know that they are appreciated for all the hard work they put into helping your child reach his or her full potential. If you are short on time, have your child write a note to their teacher about something they really like about them, with an accompanying drawing. Put this in a nice envelope, go ahead and slip a gift card in there and call it a day!

Truliant Names Forsyth County Community Grant Winners

Crosby Scholars Community Partnership - Funds will provide college enrollment deposits for high-need students.

Winston-Salem, N.C. – To provide funds to non-profit organizations more quickly in the face of operating challenges due to COVID-19, Truliant Federal Credit Union recently announced eight Forsyth County organizations will receive Community Mini Grants.

Financial Pathways of the Piedmont - Funds will be used to support the electronic signature process to serve clients more efficiently during the pandemic.

H.O.P.E. of Winston-Salem - Funds will cover additional meals for children.

The program, now in its twelfth year, provides community-based nonprofit organizations with $1,000 in grant funding to support operating, programmatic or capacity-building needs. This year, operating were added costs to its grant focus areas to help organizations impacted by the coronavirus.

The credit union shortened its Mini Grant application period to get funds to recipients more quickly. Truliant disbursed a total of $30,000 in award funds in its member communities beginning in late April.

“Local organizations large and small are stepping up to fill important gaps in our communities when they need it most,” said Renee Shipko, Community Engagement Manager. “The funds will provide an extra layer of support for those needing help with operating costs or programmatic changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Through the program, non-profit organizations in WinstonSalem & Forsyth County will receive a total of $8,000 in grant funds. In 2020, emphasis was placed on organizations that improve communities through community development, economic mobility, financial wellness, and youth and education. diversity of North Carolina’s three sub-biomes, namely the coastal plains, Piedmont, and the mountains, reveals varieties of forest and non-forest ecosystems. Based on our consistent levels of precipitation and four distinct seasons, we live in the biome of a temperate deciduous forest. It’s no wonder our climate attracts diverse species of colorful birds and smaller mammals, as well as dangerous creatures, from the rattlesnake to the southern black widow spider. In the mountain regions, outside Winston-Salem, live black bears, bobcats, and coyote. And, perhaps the cougar is not extinct, but resurging in numbers.

Unless searching for specific names of birds, insects, aquatic vertebrae, and mammals in the Piedmont Triad, you’ll not be aware of the creatures that no longer fly, swim, or walk here. In calling all defenders of wildlife, it’s essential to know why our ecosystem is on the verge of losing the Henslow sparrow.

PREFERENCES Not all birds perch in limbs high above the ground and flit from one spot to the next. A bird that is distinguishable by its flat head, brown-streaked breast, and short tail engages in a unique foraging habit. Male and females enjoy running through grassy fields to feast on insects, such as grasshoppers and beetles, stink bugs, small wasps, snails and spiders. Only when confronted by a predator will the small sparrow choose to expand its eight-inch wingspan and fly. An inconspicuous songbird spanning only four to five inches in length, it is a rare gift to spot the Henslow; yet, if camping in an area of saplings, you may hear a short hiccup call, sounding similar to the word, “si-lick” from dusk through to dawn.

It is difficult to imagine the Piedmont Triad once had areas where tall native grasses swayed in the breezes, reaching shoulder height, with thriving streams and ponds. Dating back 100 years, little bluestem, Indian grass, prairie anemone, and larkspur grew. Forests were narrow and full of young saplings. It was a time when species like the Henslow sparrow could locate breeding areas and plenty of food sources. Then in an ideal setting of flowering plants, pollinators, and wildlife, like the Bobwhite quail, human population increases altered open areas to make room for subdivisions and commercial properties.

CONSERVATION PROJECTS UNDERWAY Today, there are acres of prairie ecosystems in Raleigh, Durham, and Charlotte to help visitors, junior scientists, and all defenders of wildlife understand the need for a natural landscape. The prairies of open, sundrenched grasslands may return. The Piedmont Prairie Partnership, alongside non-profit, state, and federal agencies are openly talking about bringing back our reserves. Our fear of losing more wildlife, such as the Henslow sparrow, will take a collective effort to alleviate, which includes you!

AIDING THE HENSLOW SPARROW POPULATIONS A walk through a natural habitat, such as a thriving prairie, forest, stream, or pond allows you to see firsthand how plants and animals adapt. Although not as spacious as a natural reserve, there are forms of ecosystems we can create by planting native trees and wildflower plots. Ornamental grasses add contrast to a perennial bed. Consider planting switchgrass, pampas, pink Muhly, Maiden Grass, little bluestem, Sapphire blue oat grass, and silver feather grass.

The term “natural” contrasts with the mindset of wanting a perfectly manicured lawn and trimmed edges; yet, “wild” can also exist to welcome a variety of songbirds, insects, and mammals. Once established, you can start to sit back and enjoy the wildlife arriving at your landscape. Do not forget to add two of the essential needs, shelters and water!

is far from new, but Club Pilates of Winston-Salem is. And, despite the challenges of being a brand new business in a COVID-19 world, Club Pilates is taking the community by storm.

BUT FIRST, WHAT IS PILATES? Pilates is an exercise technique that was created by Joseph Pilates. Born in Germany, Joseph Pilates began experimenting with different types of resistance exercises as early as 1912. He began to develop a following before he immigrated to the United States in 1926 and opened a fitness studio in New York. The rest is history. Even 53 years after his death, his name and his legacy live on in the fitness community.

WHY CLUB PILATES? For Club Pilates Winston-Salem’s owner, Kristin Henry, the choice was easy. She has been working in the fitness industry since 2011, including her role as a Pilates Master Trainer. Of all the fitness styles she taught, Pilates always helped her move and feel her best. After years of teaching, she wanted to bring those benefits to more people. The Club Pilates method allows members to get exceptional instruction, using top of the line equipment, while ensuring the workout is accessible to everyone.

CLUB PILATES IN A COVID-19 WORLD “The impact of COVID-19 has taken a tremendous toll on all businesses – both new and established. We have been so fortunate, though. Even though we had not been open long

before the state ordered all fitness facilities closed, we have quickly developed a loyal following. We are thankful for those who encouraged us and supported us during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Kristin. “During the quarantine, we offered free, online classes which helped us stay in touch with our members and encourage one another from afar.”

“Thankfully, our return to the studio should be relatively simple. Each participant works with their own set of equipment, which is cleaned between each class, and by coincidence, our stations are each 6’ apart.” She continued, “in the post-COVID world, we have taken extra steps to ensure everyone’s safety, including the addition of air purifiers, touchless check-in and increased cleaning. We want everyone to feel comfortable as they return to their normal activities, including Pilates classes at Club Pilates.

“I love running this small business. My husband was deployed with the National Guard when the studio opened. Thankfully, he’s home with me now, but during my time alone, I saw first-hand what an inclusive, welcoming community Winston-Salem is! It was clear very quickly that opening our studio here was the right choice,” said Kristin. “It’s such a privilege to be here and be a part of this community. The Art of Vacation Planning

you ever come home from vacation and realized you forgot to do something you had thought about doing while on your vacation? That feeling of regret is the absolute worst, especially for once-in-a-lifetime vacations like traveling overseas. Or, if you’re like me, you don’t like to repeat vacations ever because there are so many places in the world to see! A helpful way to prevent this post-vacay regret is to build vacation itineraries in advance of your travels.

It is best to section out the parts of the itinerary for the planning stage. The biggest categories for vacationing in the terms of planning are: attractions, food and lodging. If you’re staying in one place during your vacation, the lodging is pretty easy – when you have decided where you are staying, add the details into your itinerary format. If you are doing multi stop and day road tripping, you will want to add your lodging information for each stop. Different people have different preferences when it comes to formatting, but many people lean towards Word. After a few tries, you’ll figure out exactly what you like, and the formatting within that system that you prefer.

Once you know where you’re staying, you can figure out what you’re going to do while you’re there. If your vacation is focused around one particular attraction, such as Disney World or the beach – then this can make it a lot easier. Discuss with yourself or your partner if you want to take any days off of that one particular attraction; if so, do some research on what is nearby (and think about how long you are willing to travel from your location). Make a list of a few options, and here’s where your customization can come in. Some people chose to have each day fully planned out, while others prefer to have a shopping list of choices that they can pull from depending on their mood and the weather that day. For this discussion, we will assume that we are going with the shopping list, as it’s the most flexible for beginners. For each option that you choose to list on your itinerary, make sure to include the following information: name of the attraction, address, business hours and cost. It’s also really important to check if there are any days that they are closed – for example, most art museums are traditionally closed on Mondays.

When you have figured out all of the places you will be

visiting, it’s time to decide where to eat! Food is a great way to get to know new regions and to open your horizons. It’s also just honestly really, really tasty. However, it can also be really, really bad if you go to the wrong restaurant. While the story of that time you took your kids to the restaurant that served mac and cheese that tasted just slightly worse than burnt plastic can be funny to recite at family gatherings, it’s a much more pleasant experience to simply find some fantastic eateries to enjoy while on your vacation. One of the best places to find high quality food is to check out TV food maps online to find restaurants that have been featured on food television shows.

Planning your vacations in an itinerary format like this can be a little more upfront work, but it will pay off. Knowing where you are going in advance, you can plan better financially – as well as know that you won’t come home with regrets again.

Better yet, if you print out your itinerary, you can make notes on each attraction and restaurant. If you are one to repeat vacations, then you can build on this itinerary each time depending on how you rate each place – or you can share the itinerary with others!

Educational Preparedness for the Next Level: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

and social readiness are two terms that may sound overwhelming in theory. The challenge is determining what kinds of experiences will help support your child’s social, physical, and academic needs. Whether you have four years or one year to prepare your child for kindergarten, the following list will guide you in the right direction!

Daily Schedules A clock dictates your preparations from breakfast to bedtime. Take the expectation one step further and begin communicating expectations each day.

For instance, “After breakfast, let’s work on a puzzle together, and before lunch, we will read.” As educational moments occur, children can learn to differentiate between skills that require full attention or enhance playtime. Establish rules to hold your child accountable in ten-minute increments.

Establishing Independence Milestones play a vital role in a child’s development. As doctors often provide a detailed list at scheduled wellness appointments, so you should focus on developmentally appropriate skills that emphasize self-care and organization.

Examples may include placing dirty clothes in a hamper, listening to a story without interruption, and returning books to a bookshelf.

Academic Readiness By the time a child reaches 18 months old, he or she will recognize and correctly identify the names of colors, letters, and numbers. Television programs; books; songs; games; scheduled story times; playgrounds; day trips; one-onone, and group, conversations; and hands-on activities will aid in boosting a child’s understanding towards a level of independence. number line, and list capital and lowercase letters, too. Children will enjoy fingerspelling and receiving praise in the form of a sticker (above each symbol).

Each day, engage your child in an educational activity!

Paper and Pencil!

The number-one complaint from children and teens regarding handwriting is the uncomfortable cramping sensation felt in the fingers. By the time your child reaches third grade, roughly 50% of their classwork will utilize a keyboard rather than paper and pencil. It will be up to you to practice penmanship and teach cursive.

Begin by showing how to grasp a pencil or crayon properly and to make horizontal, vertical, and other lines at various degrees within a perimeter. In addition to writing their first and last name, children should practice using a glue stick and scissors.

Preschools Starting at age two, preschoolers can gain the necessary educational, emotional, and social skills in an enriched learning environment. Quietly sitting at a desk and independently working teaches the rules of listening to verbal directions and remaining patient or raising a hand.

Additionally, lunch-bunch programs allow children to practice unpacking, eating, and cleaning up in a social setting. Sickness is inevitable; yet, exposure results in a boost to your child’s immunity.

Create a Goodbye Routine!

Two may seem much too young to attend a half-day preschool; however, the separation is a necessity for your child and you. Some children will not leave without a glance back, eager to meet peers, while others may cling and incite you to tears of worry. Try reassuring words or a small charm to reduce fears.

An Approach to Study Skills Temper tantrums are a defense mechanism for young children to release frustration in not being able to communicate their feelings, emotions, or words properly. Transition the negative experience by determining the solution.

Perhaps, a remedy is working together, taking turns, verbal guidance, praise, or a well-needed break.

Social Readiness Young children need opportunities to practice relating and interacting socially with peers. Children at play solve problems, create, experiment, and engage in all the fundamental skills necessary for a thriving classroom environment. They will take turns, share, understand, communicate, and welcome new arrivals while working together.

Children need time to play independently with one other in small to large groups.

Wonderful conversations can evolve from interactions. It’s never too early to discuss themes centered in friendship, which include kindness, appropriate behavior, and sharing.

TIP: Encourage your child to resolve his or her conflicts. By providing guidance, your child will learn from the experiences and find an inner self-confidence in each act!

TIP: Introduce yourself to your local public librarian, who will happily offer popular, age-appropriate reading suggestions.

The early years are an exciting time of fast growth, curiosity, and new experiences!

A Look inside America’s Treasures

vacations will look a little different this year than in the past. Restrictions have been put in place, limiting our travels. However, one thing remains the same. Summer is the perfect time to travel to our nation’s treasures. Thousands of people visit historic sites, such as the White House, the Grand Canyon and more, during this time of the year. According to USA Today, there is a top-10 list of United States monuments. Before planning your trip to a national treasure, let’s take a look at three of the monuments on that list and their history. In addition, we’ll look at an alternative way to visit the places this COVID-19 summer.

the stairs to the interior, there is the quote, “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.” Inside, surrounding the statue of President Lincoln, are two of his most famous speeches.

To his left are the words from the Gettysburg Address and to his right is his entire Second Inaugural Address. The latter of the two speeches was given in March 1865, only a month before Lincoln’s death. Fun fact: there is a typo in his Second Inaugural Address.

The word “future” in the line “With high hope for the future, no prediction…” is actually misspelled as “euture.”

Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, South Dakota

One of the most iconic symbols of America is “Lady Liberty,” stationed in New York Harbor. Formally known as the “Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World,” the monument has been welcoming people since 1886, and as an official National Monument since 1924. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France, honoring the alliance between the United States and France during the American Revolution. The monument is a symbol of freedom and hope, as well as a symbol of remembrance for everyone who helped in her building. While at the Statue of Liberty, tourists can walk around Liberty Island (the name of the statue’s location), tour the inside of the statue’s pedestal, or climb inside up to the crown. On my visit to the monument several years ago, I climbed to the top pedestal (the crown was closed that day).

It was well worth the hike to see such a gorgeous view of New York Harbor. Also, you can take a short ferry ride over to Ellis Island and the Island’s Immigration Museum. Approximately 4 million people from around the world visit this historic site every year.

The Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. Recognized as the nation’s most visited monument, bringing in over six million visitors each year, the Lincoln Memorial is dedicated to the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., this monument is made up of 36 marble columns, stairs leading to the interior, and a 19-foot, 175ton statue of President Lincoln looking out over the National Mall. The reason that President Lincoln faces the Mall is to symbolize him looking over the country he fought to preserve and unite during the Civil War. At the top of

Another popular tourist attraction located in, or I should say carved into, the Black Hills of South Dakota, is the national park Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Mount Rushmore features the faces of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Along with the faces, the national park is home to the Avenue of Flags, consisting of flags from all the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The creation of the monument can be contributed to historian Doane Robinson. Also referred to as the “Father of Mount Rushmore,” Robinson thought the site would draw tourists to the area. He worked with sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Together, they specifically choose these four presidents, based on their places in history. Nearly 3 million visitors come to Mount Rushmore every year, and if you come during the summer, the faces are illuminated by lights at nighttime.

A Lesson on Faith from My Great-Mommy’s Cast-Iron Skillet

My

mom recently gave me some of my Great-mommy’s castiron cookware. I don’t have a clue how old it is. Great-mommy and Great Papa were married in 1930, so I’m assuming she obtained it in the early years of their marriage, and more than likely, it wasn’t new then. I remember her using it…Greatmommy was an incredible cook. I was 14 when she died and even 30 years after her death, I still say her cornbread is the best I’ve ever eaten.

Here’s the problem…These cast-iron pieces have been in the hands of my grandmother.

And that was a mistake. My grandmother hated to cook and she never followed the appropriate rules when it came to caring for her mother’s cast-iron cookware.

Translation: Mamo washed them with soap and water.

My grandmother didn’t trust the decades of experience that cast-iron cookware could (and should be) be cleaned WITHOUT soap. She felt that if the pan wasn’t scrubbed with bubbles, it wasn’t clean. And in her efforts, she exhausted herself for no reason. And eventually (insert sounds of crying), she even put the cast-iron into the dishwasher. Bless her heart.

I know. The horror, right? I have a feeling that Mamo had some explaining to do to Great-Mommy when they were reunited in heaven.

The cookware was covered in rust and so, some friends of mine who actually know how to restore cast-iron kindly offered to help me out. I know how to maintain it once it’s properly seasoned again. After all, it’s not that hard. And the care of a castiron skillet has a lot to teach us about faith.

Just as the care of cast-iron isn’t complicated, neither is our salvation or forgiveness for sins. But we sure do like to make it hard.

When we read John 3:16, it almost seems too easy. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” That’s it? We just have to believe in Jesus and we have eternal life? Where are all the rules about being a good person?

What about random acts of kindness? They aren’t part of the process, because nothing we do can earn our place in heaven!

Therefore, many doubt the simplicity of John 3:16 because they think salvation should be more complicated. They don’t trust how easy God has made it.

We are the ones who make it hard. Jesus made it easy: Believe in Him and His blood makes us clean. 1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

I understand the temptation to want to use a steel wool scrubber on our hearts.

We know how ugly our sin is… but here’s the good news…so does God. We know how impure we are…but here’s the good news…so does God. We can’t fully understand how the simple choice to believe can make us clean…but here’s the good news…that’s how simple God made it for us. It’s simple. But not always easy.

We don’t need to earn anything and try to over- complicate the matter. As it says in my favorite verses, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

So stop trying so hard and take God at His Word! He gave us these simple instructions thousands of years ago and they are true today. We need to trust that when we believe, we have been made clean.

Betwixt and Between

I believe the secret of the power of the Gospel is to be willing to go all the way with the Lord—putting your hand to the plow and never looking back. I believe people who are “on the fence” cannot enjoy the things of God. I believe when they try to get betwixt and between, they get into an awful mess and things don’t go well.

An experience at Boulder Dam back in the 1930s illustrates this point. The Boulder Dam, which is now called Hoover Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed from 1931-1936. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers and at a cost of over one hundred lives.

One day, a group of powder men had been working all night drilling holes in the mountainside to blast away the rock. They wanted to make the big shot before the day crew came on.

At last, the holes were all dug, the dynamite was in, and the wires connected with the power line. The man who was to set off the blast was short of wire and there wasn’t time to send to camp for more. What wire he had wasn’t long enough to let him get beyond the danger zone of falling rocks. He saw a little cave in the mountainside and thought he’d push the button and jump in there. So, he pushed the button, the blast went off, he jumped in the cave—and there was a rattlesnake!

He was betwixt and between. He couldn’t go in on account of the snake, and he couldn’t go out on account of the falling rocks. What could he do? He saw a huge rock at the cave entrance. In less time than it takes to tell it, he picked up that rock, dropped it over the snake and jumped into the cave. The snake tattled and rattled but couldn’t reach the man because it was pinned down by the rock.

I wonder whether some folks who say they are Christians really believe in the Lord or not. I don’t know whether they have been born again. Many are “on the fence.” They are betwixt and between. They are like that man in the cave and they will have to do something about it. If you are one of those, get hold of the rock of Christ Jesus that will save you. He can hold Satan down so that he cannot harm you. A decision must be made. Either we go all the way with the Lord or not at all.

There is no in-between. This is imperative to experiencing the full and abundant life we all strive for. After all, in His presence is fullness of joy, and in His right hand, there are pleasures forever (Psalm 16:11). By loving the Lord with all your heart, you place yourself in a position of joy—joy that is there regardless of your current circumstances. I want that kind of full joy. Don’t you?

Loving God is always a day-to-day learning process. We learn more and more how to do it and keep doing it a little each day until we get better at it and more consistent in it. When we let the “Son” shine in our hearts, we will find the true meaning of life.

be honest—most of us are very fond of a tool that makes our lives a little easier. Some of us may not be able to write or type well without it. The tool I’m referring to is spell-check. I am one of those people who rely on spell-check when writing. After all, I am not a good speller.

However, spelling is a skill some people do have and is highlighted through many opportunities, including the National Spelling Bee. The Scripps National Spelling Bee, to be exact, is only offered for students through the eighth grade, but has a longstanding history of giving young people a chance to show off their spelling skills. In fact, this year is the 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee, and it is usually held for a week in May. Before this year’s big event (which will be hosted later in the year than May, due to COVID-19), let’s take a look at the history of this well-known and treasured event.

• The purpose of the Spelling Bee is to help students increase their spelling, vocabulary, and to better learn how to use the English language.

• It started in 1925, when local spelling bees were organized by newspapers in Louisville, Kentucky. The only years it hasn’t been held were 1943 – 1945, due to World War II. • The winning word for the inaugural champion Frank Neuhauser was the word “gladiolus.” Other winning words for past years include eudaemonic, deification, gesellschaft, koinonia, and scherenschnitte. I know I wouldn’t be able to spell any of these words if I were asked.

• The Bee is considered a nonprofit organization and is run through The E.W. Scripps Company. The company has had the rights to the program since 1941.

• Regarding specific restrictions, students who have not yet completed the eighth grade, won a previous National Spelling Bee, or are over the age of 15 are allowed to participate. They do have to be the regional winner of a spelling competition, usually their state’s, as well.

• The Spelling Bee is the United States’ largest and longest-running educational program and has 291 sponsors for participants throughout the world.

• It is also known for its global participants. While the majority are from the United States, other participants have been from The Bahamas, Canada, China, India, Ghana, New Zealand, Jamaica, Mexico, and Japan.

• As for the winner, he or she will receive a $50,000 cash prize and an engraved trophy.

Tips for Studying for a Spelling Bee If you have a speller at home and have your eyes set on the school, local, regional, and national Spelling Bee, here are some tips on how to prepare.

• Space out studying your word list. Only practice 5 – 10 words a day. Students are usually given the list of words to study ahead of time.

• Start with the words you are familiar with, then move up the levels of difficulty. Isolate words you don’t know on the list. Keeping these words separate from the others will help you recognize which ones you need to focus more on and which ones you don’t.

• Create a study schedule. Look at your current schedule and obligations and determine a time when you and your child are able to study together. Block out a chunk of time each day, but be flexible as your schedule alters and gets closer to the competitions.

• Continue to expand your vocabulary through reading and learning new words.

“June Is Busting Out All Over” “June is Busting Out All Over” is a song from an old movie but is also appropriate for my article’s title. After months of being told to stay in and distance ourselves when going out for essentials, I am going to assume – and I know the saying about when you assume and what it makes me – that we have started to open up our state. If not, the title still works in that we are getting outdoors more with the warm, beautiful weather that June brings.

Social distancing with family and friends is much easier with the amount of space there is outside. There are games we can play without getting close to one another. Consider setting up corn hole boards, croquet, badminton, ring toss, bocce and any other games that can be set up where players can play without being close to each other. Children will love having games to play, getting exercise and enjoying the warm, sunny days.

Although there are many benefits to spending time in the sun, there are items to make sure we have on hand to protect our precious grands. It is easy to forget to put on sunscreen. Children run outside and start playing and, after an hour or more, it suddenly occurs to you that the sunscreen was never put on. There are many types of sunscreen, but one specifically for children is what to have. You can find them in spray or lotion form.

This is one product where you want to buy a name brand. There have been incidents of children getting severe burns after being out in the sun with an offbrand sunscreen on. So, just a word of warning.

Along with the warmth of the summer season comes insects. Mosquitoes, bees, wasps, no-see-ums, and fire ants, to name a few, can put a damper on outside activities. Keeping insect repellent on hand will make outdoor playtime much more successful. Companies that spray for mosquitoes may be a good consideration

if you plan to spend a lot of time in your yard.

If your grandchildren will be spending much of the summer with you, you may go on outings to a pool or lake. If they have not already had them, consider signing them up for a swim program. Even babies can benefit by taking lessons with a specially trained instructor. There is a reason pools are considered an attractive nuisance and require having fences around them. Children just see the fun of splashing around in the water. They don’t realize the dangers, especially if they can’t swim. It is a heartbreaking statistic of the number of drownings that occur. Research shows that contrary to opinion, a drowning person does not thrash around and call out. This is a reason that those around may not realize the person is in trouble. For extra caution, life jackets are a good option.

Now, with all the protection in place, it is time to think of all the fun summer brings. June is a wonderful month.

Usually, the children are just getting out of school for the summer and are ready to go and do. This year, they have been home since March, not spending time with friends, not going on field trips. If areas are opening, this will be opportunities to visit places that the grandchildren will enjoy.

Whatever your plans, hopefully it will be able to include family. For many, quarantining from children and grandchildren has been the most difficult. May this summer be one of safety, health, and the happiness of family gatherings.

you aren’t familiar with the Signs of Hope project in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood in Winston-Salem, then please read Joanna Britt’s story below in her own words. It’s a message of hope and harmony for our community and beyond. I hope it inspires others and comforts many in this most unusual time in our lives.

I arrived home from a trip abroad with family just in time to experience North Carolina in lock-down.

I spent the first few weeks of sheltering-in-place reading, meditating, listening to music, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and catching up with friends and family. But my nature screams at me to be “doing something.” As an artist, I felt like I should be painting, but there was no urging from a muse until I think I must have dreamed this sign idea. I was fortunate to have a (very giving) nephew who worked at Lowes hardware, who was willing to pick up and deliver wood for me. I had paint, I had brushes, and so it started.

Unpredictable events and circumstances bring people together to share life, even when we can’t physically embrace, and community is formed where it may not have been before. So many people walk past our house during these days! Whole families walking and biking together. It has been so much fun to watch families stop in front of our house and spend a little time choosing the sign that they’d like to put in their yard and then choosing one for their neighbor, almost a sacred experience for me. And to see children carrying them home and then see signs scattered around the neighborhood in the yards of people I don’t even know helped to fill my desperate need to feel normal again.

The need to feel normal and comfortable is very real. Even now, we are all busy. It’s not that we don’t care; it’s just that we don’t know how to do anything about the sadness that we see. This project was mine to do. I realized it was something that might matter just a bit.

One friend told me that her daughter, Marlowe, pets their sign every day as they leave the house, like it’s a dog…just as we should all nurture those kindnesses and keep them going! Another friend told me that her high school daughter, Mary Claire, had chosen “siblings” because she was so happy to have her older brother and sister home from college. And another neighbor chose

“sister” as a nod to their new baby girl, due in June, little sister to James. One bike rider grabbed “rest” as he made his way back home after a long ride.

I don’t know how far the signs are traveling, but I do know that they’re starting to show up in neighborhoods other than my own. My “instruction” sign says, “Take one for yourself and one for a neighbor,” and I know people are doing that, especially for neighbors that are special to them or that aren’t able to get out themselves.

As we move forward and do get back to “normal,” I hope that these signs will help people remember how to be kind to each other and slow down just a bit, how to pass along a sprinkle of hope to neighbors and friends. I hope we will embrace our new understanding of how even the smallest things might do some good in this broken world.

The Slightly Lopsided Seesaw

Dear working parent, I see you. I see you juggling work and childcare, and selfcare and your home and your chores and your relationship and your community involvement and your children’s extracurricular activities, striving for that elusive thing called work-life balance.

STOP! Why, you ask? Please permit me to explain.

A few years ago, I was in a job interview, and the interviewer asked me to define my concept of work-life balance. Well, I responded, my mother set a precedent for me that enriched and defined my childhood. She worked as a high-level government official with a high-powered career, but she was always home for dinner (when she wasn’t traveling). She set a priority—family dinner. A very important priority, in my opinion. She started work early. She made sure she met her goals and exceeded expectations. In her career, she was ambitious, successful, and productive.

And at home, she was always there for my brother and me.

So, I told the interviewer, while I think that true work-life balance is a myth, I am seeking a meaningful, flexible job I love, and the ability to have dinner every night with my kids, because that is extremely important to me.

Reader, I got the job. I am home every night for dinner with my kids (with very rare exceptions). And I don’t think about achieving work-life balance (too much).

My house is a mess, we live out of laundry baskets, and it’s mid-January, and my yard is still full of leaves. Why? Because my meaningful, flexible job doesn’t pay a

ton and therefore doesn’t permit me the luxuries of a cleaning person or a yard service or other outside help. In fact, we live paycheck to paycheck.

I don’t always get my chores done, sometimes I reschedule dental cleanings three times, I don’t volunteer as much as I want, and sometimes the kids eat frozen pizza. There are times when I have to respond to work e-mails or texts, take calls, or monitor social media posts in the evenings or on the weekends.

And I am happy. Why? Because I don’t expect a perfect balance. Sure, I try to make sure my seesaw is not totally lopsided in the direction of work or in the direction of personal life. It’s always slightly askew, and that is a-okay with me.

I don’t seek the balancing act; I reject the tightrope and the scales, I celebrate the imbalance. I don’t judge myself if I come up short by someone else’s standards, instead, I fully embrace the imperfection of life. I understand that sometimes I’ll have extra work, and other times, I’ll have bountiful family time.

I teach my kids that nothing is perfect, except in math, and I model the embrace of imperfection. So please, working parents, be okay with your self-perceived flaws, not being Internet perfect, and having a lopsided seesaw.

Having it all is a myth. And quite frankly, who wants it all or has time for it all? The sooner we all accept that, the better.

This doesn’t mean don’t work for what you want, or choose what makes you happy.

Please, work hard. Be ambitious. Be the best you that you can be. Make the choices

you want and need to make: get promoted, work 60-hour weeks, make a Pinterestworthy dessert, take time for self-care; take your kids to six different sports practices. I am not judging your choices. You do you.

But please, please, do not strive for that elusive thing called work-life balance.

A perfect balance is a toxic myth. If you focus on that, in my opinion, you are only going to get frustrated and feel like you are behind, not enough, maybe even a failure.

Our country’s work culture demands that we go above and beyond, that we be willing to work until the job gets done.

That our relationship with our career and our workplace takes precedence over our relationships with our partners and our children, and that our job (or jobs!) becomes part of our identity (“Hi, nice to meet you. What do you do?”). This goes for all of us, from the barista at Starbucks to the corporate attorney to the chemist to the non-profit program manager to the welder and beyond.

STOP! Reject the pressure to be it all, have it all, do it all.

Instead, do what makes you happy as much as possible. Make choices that work for you today and know that tomorrow or next week, you may make different choices.

Times are different now, but think about what life will look like when we get back to normal. Let some things drop, and don’t stress it. Give up on so-called balance of work and life. Seesaws always go up and down.

All of our seesaws are lopsided, and that’s just fine. And no matter how mine sways, it always includes family dinner.

BARBECUE CHICKEN TOSTADAS

3 cups flour

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

¼ cup sugar

Small flour or corn tortillas

1 packet yeast (rapid rise or regular)

¾ cup rotisserie chicken, fully cooked, diced

1 cup warm water

1 can cream of chicken soup

Barbecue sauce

¼ cup butter, melted

1 c up mixed frozen vegetables: carrots, peas, green beans, thawed

1 tsp. salt DIRECTIONS: 1. Stir 1 cup flour, sugar and yeast in a bowl and then transfer to a gallon-size resealable (Ziplocstyle) bag.

2. Pour warm water into the bag. Seal the bag, pressing out the air.

3. Let the kids shake and mix the bag by hand.

4. Let bag rest for 10 minutes to proof.

5. In a bowl, combine 1 cup of flour with salt. Pour this into the bag along with the melted butter.

6. Seal bag, pressing out the air, and shake and mix through by hand.

7. Add the final cup of flour to the bag.

8. Remove the dough and place on a floured surface. With floured hands, knead dough for 5-10 minutes.

9. Put dough into a greased loaf pan. Place a towel over the loaf pan and set into a warm spot to rise 30-45 minutes.

10. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes.

1. Preheat the over to 375°F. 2. I n a medium bowl, stir chicken, thawed mixed vegetables and cream of chicken soup.

DIRECTIONS: 1. T oss the shredded chicken in barbecue sauce

3. S eparate the biscuit dough and place each one into a greased muffin-tin compartment. Using your fingers, push down the dough, starting in the middle and working up the sides of each muffin compartment as high as it will go.

2. L ay tortillas on ungreased cooking sheet and place chicken mixture on top, then top with cheese.

4. A dd the chicken mixture to each cup (approximately 2 Tablespoons each).

4. T op with a drizzle more of barbecue sauce and favorite toppings.

5. B ake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.

NOTE: You can substitute crescent roll dough cut into circles for the biscuit dough for a sweeter, softer texture.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

A Letter to My Graduate

After

performing very well in your on-line education for weeks, I learned that the school board had decided to let the high school Senior Class of 2020 finish their schooling at the end of April this year, because of the serious historic pandemic we’re living through. The reasoning behind their decision was sound, wise, and necessary for the overall health and well-being of everyone, not just the students.

When I went into your room to tell you the news, you were sitting back in your desk chair with your feet stretched out on the bed, working on your laptop. You were in the middle of completing some online coursework. I remember you were focused on your work, and I had interrupted you. I proceeded to give you the news, essentially meaning you would finish the year early and via online classes. You paused and stared at your screen for a moment and didn’t say anything. I asked you what you were thinking, and I’ll always remember your answer.

You just looked ahead and said in a casual, innocent voice, “If I had known the last day of school was really going to be the last day of school….” and you didn’t finish that sentence. You didn’t need to. You appeared very mature and stoic on the surface, and yet I could tell you needed some time to process the news, so I left the room.

words that I could say to you to make it all better. But what can you say at that moment? How do you tell a young person that they’ve worked hard for the last thirteen years to reach this milestone, only to have something beyond their control (coronavirus) sneak in and take away what should have been some of the best memories of their life? Oh sure, it could be a lot worse; we all know that to be true. Nonetheless, it provides little solace to all the high school and college seniors in the Class of 2020. It wasn’t their fault, and it was in everyone’s best interest to take these necessary steps, and yet, it’s still hard on the students, their families, and even the faculty and staff that have shared in these times with these young men and women. Unfortunately, we can’t get this back, and as a parent, I feel helpless; I can only feel for you as I seek to embrace the silver lining.

When we spoke again, I told you that even though life’s sad at the moment, years from now this will be a part of your story.

Something you tell your children about. I promised you that if you stay the course, these next few years immediately in front of you will become some of the best years of your life. As for your path, your goals in life, I reminded you of what best-selling author Mark Manson said, “The benefits of goals aren’t in achieving them, it’s that they give us direction and meaning.” I added one more thing, “Goals are what makes us continue to move forward.”

When I walked out, I reflected on what you might be feeling. This isn’t just any year in school for you; this is your senior year of high school. Within the last three weeks, your high school tennis team’s stellar season had been called off early for the year, and your school social activities, clubs, and senior field trip had all been canceled, including your senior prom. I can only assume by watching bits and pieces on the news, you surely thought the virus would be a temporary inconvenience in your most memorable senior year. Instead, it would turn out to be a wholesale cancellation of all the things that make a senior year special. My guess is the totality of this situation was becoming clear to you in that moment.

To you, your classmates, and all the other graduates of the Class of 2020, although the year didn’t end as we’d hoped, and because of that, you all share a common bond regardless of where you went to school. As you go forward in life, when you get the opportunity to help another member of this unique 2020 club, I recommend you do so. Perhaps, that will be how you each get back some of what you lost. Who knows, it could be life-changing once again.

Realizing I had just delivered the news that confirms the last half of your senior year had been ruined, I struggled to find

I love you son, and I’m very proud of you for what you’ve accomplished, and here’s to better days ahead.

Remember what you said, “If I had known the last day of school was really going to be the last day of school….” Let that be a lesson that from this time on you carry forward and let it help you appreciate each moment as it happens.

Taking in the Sunshine: Sunshine Beverage

Winston-Salem is a wonderfully diverse city with big and bold ideas. And when we have a big idea born right here in our hometown, we get really excited when it enjoys great success! After all—we are the birthplace of global greats like Krispy Kreme and Texas Pete! We know that a lot of good things come from our community! And Sunshine Beverages is one of our most recent success stories!

It started in 2013 with a local award-winning advertising company, The Variable. The team of strategists and creatives recognized the growing trend for energy drinks and identified a gap in the market for a healthier, non-extreme one…. So instead of waiting on a client to come to them with the idea, they decided to tackle it themselves to create the perfect pickme-up; an energy beverage that people could feel great about drinking every day. Marketing genius met consumer demand, and Sunshine Beverages came into being.

What is Sunshine Energy?

It started with Ginger Berry and then out came Blueberry Lemonade and Clementine Twist. But instead of being an energy drink loaded up with empty calories and sugars, Sunshine Energy is sparkling with vitamins, electrolytes, and just enough natural caffeine. Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Lemon Pie

I always wondered what qualifies a recipe as “OldFashioned.” I like to think it’s because it’s a classic.

Buttermilk pies are just that, classic and delicious. I recently made this pie for our Easter celebrations.

The lemon flavor was perfect, almost like lemon sherbet ice cream.

INGREDIENTS: 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell 4 eggs, slightly beaten ¾ cup sugar 2 Tablespoons flour 1½ cup buttermilk ¼ cup butter, melted Grated zest from one lemon 3 Tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla Whipped cream (optional) Powdered sugar (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Make your homemade pie crust and place in a 9-inch pie plate. If using a premade frozen crust, unthaw. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer beat eggs and sugar until light yellow in color. Beat the flour in first, then add buttermilk, melted butter, lemon zest, lemon juice and vanilla.

3. Pour the mixture into your unbaked pie crust. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 325 degrees and continue baking until the center is set, about 20-25 minutes. Cool on oven rack. Add whipped cream and powdered sugar if desired.
