Happy Father’s Day to all our unsung heroes out there! You are our rock and our roll, what would we do without you? Seriously we love you guys and you definitely make our lives richer. My dad taught me many life lessons and I have fond memories of watching him work on our family car or making some repair around the house.

You and your family can take trips to new places, spend a day at the pool, or relax on the beach. owever, at times, summer can have unexpected dangerous situations, such as the possibility of drowning. She also adds, parents should always know where their children are, avoid distractions like phones, and take turns with having an adult be the water watcher. This job means they are responsible only for watching the children and nothing else. They also work with Safe Swim NC to give one-on-one swim lessons with a certified instructor.

Founder Darlene Haskins used her experience as local Infant Swimming Resource and American Red Cross swim instructor and drowning prevention advocate to create the nonprofit organization in 2017. According to askins, the CDC states that about 4,000 people drown in the .S. every year, and that drowning kills more children ages one to four than anything else, except birth defects.

askins commented, “It is important to have all doors and windows locked and alarmed. If you own a pool, install a permanent four-sided fence with selflocking gates. All adults and children should have the ability to swim. But, if an emergency does occur, it is essential that parents and families be prepared by knowing CPR.”

“Our mission is to e uip people with the needed survival swimming skills and best water safety practices to prevent drowningrelated accidents,” stated askins. “ e believe that everyone should have access to lifesaving survival swimming and water skills and want those skills to be passed down to younger generations.”

To educate others, and in and has multiple resources for learning about water safety. The organization has online sources, their website and social media accounts, as well as community advocates. They are known for their “Layers of Protection for ater Safety” materials, which are given to local medical providers, child-care facilities, and business owners. In addition, the nonprofit has private and public events, including their Annual ater Safety Day event, Summer Outreach program, and byre uest safety presentations.

“The most common mistake parents make is that thinking the unthinkable, such as drowning, can never happen to them, but statistics show that drowning accidents happen to unsuspecting families every day.

Despite what the movies show, drowning is uick and silent. A multilayered approach is the most effective way to avoid these accidents. Our Layers of Protection for ater Safety are: practice effective adult supervision, install barriers, enroll in survival swim lessons, and know CPR,” askins emphasized.

Other tips for keeping safe near the water include: Refraining from putting children in “floaties,” which give false sense of security.

Along with these efforts, the nonprofit has a global outreach program in ganda, Africa.

“In 2015,” askins explained, “drowning was made the third leading cause of unintentional injury death, and the rates are the highest in orld ealth Organization African Region. In 2016, I began a local education group on acebook and it began getting followers from around the globe. After being contacted by a water safety organization in Africa, I traveled to the country and taught swimming and water safety with instructors from the .S., Australia, and New ealand.”

In October of the next year, askins was able to travel to ganda for two weeks and taught CPR and swimming and water safety to 121 adults and 309 children. In March 2018, one of her first students, immy, came to the nited States, and five more are on the list to be a part of the Summer 2018 Local Swimming Outreach program.

The Father-Son Duo behind Little Richard’s BBQ

developed different menus and different operating procedures. hen my son decided to join the business, I decided it was time to eliminate the confusion once and for all. e worked out an agreement over the name, and Little Richard’s BBQ is now exclusive to our business.”

THE HISTORY OF LITTLE RICHARD’S BBQ

TWO GENERATIONS

ounder Nick Karagiorgis was in the restaurant e uipment business before he became a restaurant owner himself. After several attempts to convince Lexington barbe ue restaurateurs to expand to inston-Salem, Nick did it himself. “The original Little Richard’s was on Country Club Road,” said Nick. “I opened it with my business partner, Gary Sizemore, in 1991. About a year later, we took on a third partner, Richard Berrier, and subse uently opened a second location in Clemmons. ithin a few years, we all mutually decided to break up the partnership and split up our stores by a simple coin toss. Berrier would remain at the Country Club Road location and Gary and I would operate our second location in Clemmons.” ithin a few years of operating together, Gary passed away after an unfortunate battle with cancer, and Little Richard’s BBQ is now owned and operated by the Karagiorgis family.

A few years ago, Nick was joined by his son, Stephen, who spent his childhood well immersed in the business. “I grew up working in the restaurant,” said Stephen. “I’ve done it all, from bussing tables, waiting on customers, cooking and clean up, to smoking meats, and everything in between. My dad wasn’t expecting me to join him, and I’m thankful he left the decision to me. After I graduated from NC-Chapel ill, I could see so many opportunities for the business.”

THE NAME Little Richard’s name was inspired by the singer, Little Richard, of “Tutti rutti” and “Good Golly, Miss Molly” fame. “ e went back and forth on names. Gary and I finally named the restaurant after him when driving down the road and listening to his tunes on the radio,” revealed Nick. “ owever, years later, the name has caused uite a bit of confusion.” “ hen Gary and I parted ways with our third partner, we agreed to legally share the Little Richard’s BBQ name. Therefore, two separate businesses shared the name, but over time, we had 12 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

Nick said, “It’s been great to have Stephen on board.

I had high expectations, and he’s exceeded even those. e have two perspectives from two generations that when combined allow for a uni ue product. Stephen is now running the day-to-day operations of our locations, but I still remain well immersed in the details of our business.”

“It’s an exciting time at Little Richards BBQ,” Stephen remarked. “ e are evolving and growing. e are making changes that will keep us relevant, such as the inclusion of online ordering from our website and a modified rebranding campaign. But no matter what changes from an operations standpoint the uality of food and service will stay the same. e have a 26-year-reputation for excellence, and we’re not going to compromise that standard at all. The changes we are working on are about continued growth for the next 26 years and beyond.”

IN-HOUSE EXCELLENCE Stephen shared, “ very Little Richards BBQ location has an onsite pit-master to oversee our in-house smoked meats. owever, all recipes are sampled out of the Clemmons location. e never rush the process, because we know that slow is better.

And we’ll never rush a new recipe. e take our time and make sure we get it right before we add anything to the menu.”

“Since we opened, I’ve had three priorities that I’ve told my managers and employees,” explained Nick. “ irst, we serve good food. Second, we offer good service. And third, we give our customers a clean place to eat. There’s nothing optional about these three. Getting two out of three isn’t good enough. e want our customers to experience good food, good service, and a clean environment with every visit.”

COMMUNITY “Being locally owned and operated is a big responsibility,” said Nick. “ e do our best to give back to the community who supports us, and for the last 19 years, we have sponsored the Thanksgiving dinner for Samaritan Ministries.”

Stephen chimed in, “It’s a great experience. e actually have so many volunteers now that we have to turn down help! e bring d cor, food, and do what we can to make it an exciting restaurant’ experience for the ones we serve.” “ e are also working on some other great community initiatives as we grow,” disclosed Stephen. “ e have some exciting projects in the works, and I look forward to sharing them with the community very soon!”

In addition, if you have a high LTV, lenders may also charge you a higher interest rate to cover the additional risk they’re assuming. To help avoid paying PMI and improve your chances of qualifying for the lowest interest rates available, consider saving a down payment that’s equivalent to 20 percent of the purchase price of your home.

If you want to refinance your existing mortgage and your LTV ratio is greater than 80 percent, it’s likely you’ll still be responsible for paying PMI and higher interest rates.

Why Does Your Loan-to-Value Ratio Matter?

If your answer is yes, you’ve probably thought about how these purchases will impact your monthly budget. But have you thought about how the amount of money you need to borrow compares to the value of your purchase? If not, you may want to start because it’s one of the factors lenders will consider when deciding whether to approve you for a loan.

What is a Loan-to-Value Ratio?

LTV and Auto Loans Many lenders also consider your loan-to-value ratio when you apply for an auto loan. But unlike a house, which usually increases in value over time, a car typically decreases in value as soon as you drive it off the lot and continues to depreciate over time. This creates a greater risk to you because it increases the likelihood you’ll owe more on your loan than what the car is worth.

The relationship between the amount of money you borrow, and the value of your purchase is also known as your loan-to-value (LTV) ratio. If you have a high LTV ratio, it means you have little to no equity in the product you’re buying. If you have a lower LTV ratio, it means you have a greater amount of equity in your purchase. The larger your down payment is, the lower your LTV will be.

How Do I Calculate My LTV?

Your LTV ratio is calculated by dividing the amount of your loan by the value of the item you’re purchasing. For example, if you’re buying a house that’s been appraised for $300,000, and you take out a loan for $240,000, your LTV will be 80 percent. ($240,000 / $300,000 = .80 or 80 percent).

LTV and Home Loans Your loan-to-value ratio is one of several criteria lenders use when deciding whether to approve you for a loan when you want to buy a home, refinance your existing mortgage or take out a home equity loan.

In general, if you have a higher LTV, you represent a greater risk to the lender because you haven’t accumulated much equity in the property. So, if you were to default on your loan, the lender would be less likely to recoup its money. That’s why it’s common for lenders to require you to purchase private mortgage insurance (PMI) if your LTV is above 80 14 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

If you want to take out a home equity loan (HEL) or line of credit (HELOC), your loan-to-value ratio is critical because you’re borrowing against the equity you’ve accumulated in your home. Most lenders want the combined LTV of both loans to be 85 percent or less for a HELOC and 90 percent or less for a HEL.

And secure a loan you can pay off in a timely manner, so you don’t find yourself in a position where you owe more than the car is worth.

early 2017, Clemmons residents were thrilled to learn that Chick-fil-A was coming! Rumors had circulated for a long time about a Chick-fil-A presence on Lewisville-Clemmons Road, but when the rumor was confirmed, it was met with unbridled enthusiasm.

David Moore is the owner and operator of the Chickfil-A Clemmons, and he brought with him nine years of ownership experience from the Peace aven location, along with key personnel, totaling 50 team members. “The last year has been an extraordinary time of growth for us,” shared David. “The Chick-fil-A name and culture are well-known, but I was blessed to have a dynamic leadership team, including five directors, who represent almost 60 years of Chick-fil-A experience and expertise.”

That experience and expertise have helped build a strong, loyal following of regular customers in the last year. “ e try to engage our customers, not just with uality food, but with a remarkable experience,” added David. “The community’s feedback has been extremely positive, and it’s helped continue to motivate us for efficiency and excellence. In fact, our record is 171 cars served in a single hour. hen you consider that many of our visitors are ordering for a family (as Clemmons is a family-oriented community), that’s a noteworthy feat. I am so proud of my team!”

Much of the success of Chick-fil-A Clemmons is rooted in the hiring process of Chick-fil-A founder, Truett Cathy. “Our employees are hired based on character. Truett Cathy believed skills could be taught, but that character was more important.

That mindset is a tremendous asset to the Chick-fil-A culture, and it’s one of the reasons the brand is as successful as it is,” David affirmed.

Customer Charles enderson agrees. “My wife and I are fre uent customers of Chick-fil-A Clemmons. In fact, my wife jokes that the Chick-fil-A app is the most dangerous app on her phone, since

Since last year’s une 8th grand opening, Chick-fil-A Clemmons has become a welcome member of the community, even participating for the second year in the Clemmons Community Day event in May. “ e love being a part of Clemmons,” confirmed David. “Thank you to everyone who has supported our business, and please come see us again very soon!”

It’s also an activity that both adults and children can enjoy and benefit from. At Legacy Saddlebreds in instonSalem, NC, they see riders every day from the ages of 3 to adult, each coming to riding for different reasons, but all leaving with a love for the sport. or the past three-and-a-half years, Legacy Saddlebreds has been giving riding lessons in their state-of-the art facility, year round. “ ith our two indoor and two outdoor riding arenas, we are always teaching, and parents and families of our riders can sit in our climate-controlled lounge and watch, work or get some shopping done online with our wifi. orse riding is a workout, especially as an adult, you use muscles you didn’t know you had. Safety is our top priority with all our campers, but we make sure they learn and have fun,” stated Jeanine.

Once summer comes to an end, the fun at Legacy Saddlebreds continues with their Open House on August 26th, 2-4 pm. “Our open house is a free event where families can come for pony rides, face painting, games, tours of our facility and meet Picasso, our American Girl horse. We encourage guests to ask about our programs and really get to know what we are all about,” Mallory DeVoll, Riding Instructor at Legacy Saddlebreds, said. A new program that Legacy is starting is their home school series, where riding at Legacy counts as physical education credits.

As with the past few years, Legacy Saddlebreds is growing and adding to what they offer. “Our show barn is in the process of being transformed into an event center where you can get married, have corporate events, business meetings; whatever you may need an area for, we have it here. We can accommodate up to 600 people and can also have more intimate gatherings. Legacy Saddlebreds is a special place and we love to share what we do with our community,” commented Sondra.

President and CEO of YMCA of NWNC Celebrates His First Year

There

are pivotal times in each of our lives that set us on our path to what we are meant to do. For Stan Law, President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, many of the moments of his life that led him to his career with the YMCA organization had ties to childhood experiences of recognizing that you can make a difference in your own world, in turn changing the lives of others.

Stan Law, a native of Charlotte, NC, came from a family of educators. His grandfather was the President of Johnson C. Smith University, his father a college professor and his mother was a university bookstore manager, so education and the responsibilities that come with it were his foundation. “My parents always impressed upon me the importance of getting an education, and that not everyone was able to have that opportunity. When I was in the 5th grade, I had classmates who didn’t have what I had; they wore the same clothes almost every day to school and weren’t well cared for. We by no means were wealthy, but we had what we needed. I asked my dad why my classmates didn’t have what we had and he took me in the car, just a few streets over from our home, and showed me low-income housing and explained to me that many times the choices you make in life put you in situations where you may not be able to afford things and have the life you’d like. It was at that moment that I knew I wanted not only get a good education, but I wanted to spend my life helping others,” recalled Mr. Law. Other situations setting Stan Law on his path to help people occurred when he was at the YMCA in day camp.

Mr. Law’s summers were spent in the YMCA day camps, where he had valuable experiences. It was those summer memories that influenced his decision to take his first job at the YMCA in his hometown. “I became an Afterschool Counselor at the Harris YMCA, and in my first week reconnected with the man who had been my Camp Director all those years ago, Andy Calhoun, at that time, Branch Director at the Harris Y. It was then I realized that you can make the Y a career. With my degree from Gardner Webb in Social Science, I set out 28 years ago to use the Y as my vehicle to make an impact on the lives of others,” Mr. Law said.

With many roles in various YMCAs across the country, Stan Law grew in his knowledge of the ways the YMCA works within the community, bringing him to his new position of President and CEO of YMCA NWNC. “I knew I always wanted to be the CEO, not for the money or the title, but because I wanted to 24 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

make a difference in an entire community, not just a single Y or a neighborhood. When the opportunity opened here in Winston-Salem, NC, back in early 2017, I did what my mother taught me. She always said, ‘Don’t pray for what you want, pray for the right thing to happen,’ and I felt that this is the place for my wife of 25 years and me to settle,” commented Mr. Law. In 2010, the YMCA rebranded itself with the message of “strengthening foundations of community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibilities.”

“The new branding brought the YMCA together with how we serve the communities we’re in; 840 plus YMCAs doing the same work, the same way and not 840 plus different ways.

Our focus is on how the YMCA engages in the community we serve. The YMCA has been about relationships from the beginning, and in my 28 years, I have seen generations of families come through the YMCA. While the YMCA continues to meet the needs of our members, from babies to senior adults, we also need to stay open and engage with those in the community who aren’t members, reaching out to them.

We focus on the spirit, mind and body of a person; role modeling Christian principles; helping people reach their full potential. We address issues like obesity, education of chronic diseases, literacy and many more on a daily basis. With my passion for helping others, making a difference in lives and reaching those who need assistance in our community, the YMCA is the perfect place for me to do everything that I want to do,” Mr. Law confirmed.

This was the debut of the Kaleidoscope Ball—the premiere of Kaleideum’s reimagined annual black-tie fundraiser. The new name exemplifies the inspirational kaleidoscope behind the Kaledium name.

Chaired by Heather and Mike Wilson, and Christine and Bain Storch, with Ragan and Dara Folan serving as the Honorary Chairs, the Kaleidoscope Ball raised more than $213,000 to support Kaleideum’s mission: “Inspiring wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery.”

Yet limited public funding is not meeting the needs of our most vulnerable local preschoolers. Too many local children are on waiting lists for our services.

Our brainwaves perform in similar ways, syncing with the music and changing the speed of our breathing to match the rhythmic sounds and bodily movements. All this occurs in the forehead region and the upper backside of the cranium, termed the “prefrontal cortex” and the “parietal lobe” of the brain. These two areas affect your emotions and mood. Doctors have discovered that meter, timber, rhythm, and pitch in music can remove a feeling of trepidation or anxiousness, sad feelings or depression for a positive emotional response, or elevate focus and determination.

Consider the ways music changes your mood or prepares your spirit. From running to high-cardio exercises, preparing for a big presentation or exam, the rhythm and pitch, or the “drum beat,” alters the thought processes and decisions, allowing darkened thoughts to be “whisked” away. Seeking a means to calm your nerves and help your mind concentrate? Try listening to Mozart, which, studies have proven, enables memorization and focusing to be more manageable.

Exposing Children to Great Music

• Research has also concluded that people who are stressed choose to listen to music which matches their mood. For instance, lyrics help soothe people experiencing personal loss or anger to achieve understanding by identifying with the music and the words of a song.

• According to research, whether the music is a classical masterpiece, such as a symphony by Beethoven, or a number by a grunge rock band like Nirvana, loud music can boost positive feelings or change the emotion from frustration to happiness!

Growing up in Honolulu with a large family of musicians, Peter ernandez began impersonating lvis and singing on stage at the age of three. He also performed a broad range of songs from Michael Jackson, The Isley Brothers, the Temptations, and James Brown. Given the stage name “Bruno,” Peter was performing with his dad’s band five days a week by the tender age of four. The diverse genres of music he was exposed to in his youth took root and blossomed within him. Peter knew he didn’t want to become the next Latin singer; instead, he wanted to imbue his love of great music with his own. The journey to develop into an artist took time; yet Peter Hernandez did eventually become famous. He is known today as Bruno Mars.

Teammates for Life Brings Attention to a Serious Teen Problem

When

former Boston Red Sox Pitcher, John Trautwein, stepped onto the stage at LJVM Coliseum on Monday night, April 16th, before an audience predominately made up of students, parents, athletes, teachers, coaches, and more, it wasn’t to speak about baseball, at least not entirely.

Instead, John had a very special message he wanted to deliver to the young people and others in attendance. John’s story is one of triumph and tragedy, and one that he feels compelled to share with others in hopes they can avoid this same tragedy in their own lives.

Up until October 15th, 2010, he had lived a celebrated and successful life by many standards. He worked his way from the recreation league to Major League Baseball with the Boston Red Sox. He had a degree from Northwestern University and a lovely wife, Susie, who had graduated from the University of Virginia. Together, they had four beautiful children, three boys and one girl. Life was good for the Trautweins, or so they thought. But, in truth, one son, in particular, wasn’t feeling that life was going the way he had planned. John and Susie’s son, ill, who was fifteen years old and a freshman in high school in 2010, was an excellent student, played on the lacrosse team as well as in a band, and was one of those guys his friends liked talking to about their problems. He had lots of friends, and as far as John and Susie were concerned, a great life. However, Will, unbeknownst to his family, was going through his own private struggles, whether it was stress over his desire for high achievement in school and on the lacrosse field, or over his recent breakup with his girlfriend six weeks earlier. The precise reason may never be known, yet the result was that on that Friday in October, Will, would take his own life, leaving behind his family, friends,

teammates, and a community who loved him very much.

athletic, social, and career/economic stresses to deal with.

At Will’s funeral, as John looked out at the crowd, he noticed, in particular, Will’s lacrosse teammates were all there, wearing their jerseys and sitting together. As he looked at the faces of those young athletes, along with the many friends and classmates sitting near them, he experienced a consciousness in that moment that transformed him long after the ceremony was over. On that day, John realized many of your closest friends in life (a.k.a. “Life Teammates”) come to you during your teen years. Whether it’s classmates, teammates, or whoever it might be, often these are the connections that are there for you long after you graduate. These same young people grew up with you, shared similar thoughts, experiences, highs, and lows of life. You can say many of them understand you and what you’re going through, because they, too, are going through comparable challenges.

His recommendation for a helpful outcome is to emphasize to young people that sometimes it’s easier to talk to a friend about your troubles. Subsequently, he uses the acronym ACT, which stands for Acknowledge and listen to your friend and don’t ignore threats. Let them know you Care and Tell an adult that you’re worried about your friend when it’s appropriate. He knows parents always want their children to be okay, and that’s precisely why some teens choose not to talk to their parents about their troubles. Parents’ responses tend to be “it’s going to be all right, don’t worry so much about it,” whereby your “teammates,” including your friends, know a different, perhaps more empathetic, way to respond that is more effective. He points out, for instance: a compliment by your teammates carries much more weight than a compliment from your coach or parent.

It’s this awareness that led John to form the Will To Live Foundation, to bring further attention to teen suicide and educate about mental illness and its stigma, and, most of all, to bring hope. His message to young people today is that they have it harder than generations past. The CDC reports a 70% increase in teen suicides since 2006. Technology has made their world smaller, more competitive, and less patient. They live each day knowing their mistakes made in the morning could be broadcast across campus to everyone by the afternoon. Their lives are on display for others to see and judge accordingly. Their expectations are equally high. He notes the number-one stressor for high school students is what college they will get into when they graduate. He further explains they live in a 24/7 world of academic,

He left the audience with this message… your Life Teammates (a.k.a. friends) need you, be there for them; learn from your mistakes and don’t simply focus on the things that go wrong, notice equally what goes right, and deliver hope to those around you. He emphasizes that depression is an illness; it’s treatable, and it’s curable.

So remember, it’s okay not to be okay, just make sure you talk openly about it with someone you trust.

You never know what words you speak or actions you take that may truly save a life one day. It’s up to you to make a difference; you just may be the person’s only hope.

Life Lessons

from My Dad

ather’s Day being celebrated this month, I thought, what a

better time to sit down and reflect on what my Dad has taught me through the years. irst of all, let me introduce you to my Dad. My Dad is a business- man through and through—what some people call intimidating and pretty quiet, until you get to know him. He’s tough at work but the sweetest and most supportive dad ever.

I grew up following my Dad around and loved running errands with him on the weekends to

ome Depot, Lowes or the

local pro shop. I also loved walking around our neighborhood with him and our dogs.

Some of my favorite memories are those walks and errands we ran because of the lessons he taught me during those steps on the pavement or the 30-minute drive “into town” to pick up pine needles. What he did not know, until now, is that I was soaking up all the advice and wisdom he would give me. I’d ask him a million questions and he would answer carefully and thoughtfully. Here are just a few of the lessons he taught me:

1. Take care of yourself. My Dad taught me to impor-

tance of taking care of yourself first and foremost, especially in your career. He told me not to trust someone right off the bat, but to always verify what people say. I’ve learned the hard way that you cannot trust everyone! If only I had listened to my Dad tell me that the first time. e also helped teach me the importance of taking care of yourself in terms of physical fitness. e works out several times a week and has done so his whole life. My love of fitness stems from him!

2. You don’t have to be the smartest in the room, you have to be the hardest working. My Dad has always been one of the hardest workers I know. He gets to work early and stays late. He goes the extra mile to get something done. Put in the effort and time and it will pay off. I’ve always gotten good grades and had great jobs and I know it’s not because of “smarts;” instead I’ve succeeded because I work hard and try to follow the path my Dad taught me.

amily always comes first ven though my Dad is known as being tough and business-like in his profession, he truly wears his heart on his sleeve with his family. No matter what, he makes sure his girls (my Mom, sister and myself) always feel loved. In my middle school years when I was a sassy teenager taking it out on my Mom, he took me aside and informed me family is your best friend and no one loves you more than your family. He’s loyal and such a strong family guy, and taught me to look for that in my husband.

My Dad is an amazing man with such a strong character and all I’ve ever really wanted to do in life was to make him proud of me. Thankfully, I have done that and he’s told me that several times. Soon, he will become a grandfather to my baby boy (on his way now in my pregnant belly) and I cannot wait to see the life lessons he teaches little verett.

Thankfully, God gave me two strong and loving parents who taught me countless life lessons and continue to teach me every day. The older you get, the more you realize how lucky you are to have your parents. Hug them, say thank you and tell them you love them!

Growing at the Crossnore School & Children’s Home

There’s

something about the Crossnore School & Children’s Home campus. It feels serene. ven idyllic. But the hard work taking place behind the scenes belies the feeling of tranquility one feels when visiting this historic campus and urban farm.

In the summer of 2016, a major change began taking shape, first with the affiliation of inston-Salem’s The Children’s ome with Crossnore’s The Crossnore School. This affiliation led to a full merger in 2017, creating Crossnore School & Children’s Home. In less than two years, the organization has expanded, leading to greater resources and services available to the children of our community. Crossnore School & Children’s ome C O, Brett Loftis, shared how these changes are making a positive impact in western North Carolina.

THE SANCTUARY MODEL® Beyond the logistics of merging two existing programs, one of the first changes implemented in 2016 was The Sanctuary Model®, which is an internationally recognized organizational model for helping children who have survived various traumas, including neglect and abuse.

“The children we serve,” said Brett, “have seen and experienced things that many of us cannot fathom. With The Sanctuary Model®, we’ve been able to use a proven tool to help heal emotional wounds that run deep. We’re able to help the children we serve recover from painful memories and experiences in a more purposeful and impactful way.”

Crossnore School & Children’s Home was re-certified as a Sanctuary organization in April of this year, one of only six organizations in the world to achieve re-certification.

A PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP In addition to the growth of Crossnore’s residential, foster-care and adoption, and clinical services programs, Kingswood School, which meets on Crossnore’s campus, has been expanded to serve children from Kindergarten to 12th grade (where previously it only served 6th to 12th graders).

“The Kingswood School is a cooperative effort between Crossnore School & Children’s Home and the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County School system,” said Brett. “It’s designed to meet the needs of any child with severe behavioral and emotional needs. With class sizes averaging between 6–8 students, children get the one-on-one attention they need from their teachers. “ ach class includes a mental health professional, and each child is assigned a therapist,” Brett continued. “We are currently serving 135 students through this program.”

YOUTH IN TRANSITION Not every foster child is reunited with their family. And sometimes, they age out of the program without any of the fallbacks that so many of us take for granted. To that end, the Youth in Transition program was a welcome addition to Crossnore School & Children’s Home.

REBUILDING THE CAMPUS The first priority for Crossnore was to rebuild a strong residential program for children in foster care. To date, seven buildings have been renovated and 54 beds licensed and readied for children in need. The campus cottages enable sibling groups to remain together while they are in care, strengthening their family bonds and aiding in their healing.

“With over 12,000 North Carolina children in foster care,” explained Brett, “every bed counts. We have an extreme shortage in this state, and some cases 42 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

“The program is six years old, and Goodwill Industries did a great job of supporting the program during that time,” said Brett. “However, it was a perfect fit for our organization. The program is designed to assist young adults with life skills they will need when they age out of foster care.”

Youth in Transition starts with teenagers as young as 14, and works with young adults through the age of 26, equipping them with skills such as cooking, budgeting, social skills, decision-making, education, and developing healthy relationships.

HIGH ROPES COURSE “A new addition to the Crossnore School & Children’s Home landscape is a 24’ High Ropes Course,” shared Brett. “This is a therapeutic tool designed to help break through barriers. It’s a great way to establish trust, develop teamwork, and

help facilitate emotional breakthroughs.”

When the course is completed, it will be a great resource for the children at Crossnore, as well as being utilized for staff training opportunities.

THE FOUNDRY “We are very excited about a new program we are launching this fall. The Foundry is a partnership with Wake orest Divinity School and the estern North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.”

Brett continued, “This is an intentional Christian community of young professionals who are making a twoyear commitment to live and volunteer on the Crossnore School & Children’s Home campus.”

Those who participate will offer spiritual support and guidance. “This is an opportunity,” said Brett, “to exemplify the love of Jesus Christ through prayer, fellowship, relationships, justice, reconciliation, compassion, and shared service projects.”

A SATELLITE OFFICE In addition to the Winston-Salem campus and the Avery campus, Crossnore School & Children’s Home recently opened a satellite office in enderson County.

Brett said, “This new administrative office gives another location and provides increased opportunities to support foster parents and adoptive parents. The office will be used to both recruit and train new foster families, while providing ongoing support for those families who are licensed.”

ONGOING NEEDS & OPPORTUNITIES In 2017, Crossnore School & Children’s Home served more than 1,000 children

This is a seven-day on, seven-day off position, and Cottage Parents live in the cottages with the children. The job comes with full benefits, and we need four parents per cottage.”

He continued, “We always welcome foster parents. The need for quality foster parents in this state is high. We need loving adults who are willing to share their home with children in need. We offer training, and invite anyone who is willing to offer regular foster care or therapeutic foster care to apply.”

Forsyth Country Day School Event—The Forsyth Backpack Program

Friday, April 13th, 2018, the gym at orsyth Country Day School was filled with activity. Around 50 to 60 seventh graders were all focused on the project at hand. This project had nothing to do with technology, the latest YouTube video, or a social media conversation. The purpose and goal of the activity was reaching out to help other students in the community, students who didn’t know if they would have food to eat over the weekend.

The food/backpack event was initiated as part of orsyth Country Day School’s Backpack Program Club. The club’s primary focus is on providing meals to food-insecure elementary students in Forsyth County.

According to their press release, “The project was made possible by a generous grant through the Winston-Salem Foundation’s Youth Grantmakers Association, as well as by funds raised from a 5k and Fun Run put on by the CDS orsyth Backpack Club last fall. The purpose of this event is not only to provide food, but to also raise awareness about local food issues which too often go unnoticed,” shared Yasmin Horner, president

Three groups of seventh graders worked over the three-hour event, either working to fill the food bags, preparing inspirational messages to be added to each bag, or in small-group educational/information sharing sessions on food insecurity in Forsyth County.

Volunteers from the Forsyth Backpack Program led the information sessions and provided support for the overall student-led project. The Forsyth Backpack Program’s mission statement banner underlined the need and purpose: “Feeding our future, one Backpack at a time.” Visit their website (forsythbackpackprogram.org) for more information on this organization.

According to the 2016 findings by the SDA, “12.3 of all S households have experienced food insecurity. In Forsyth County, approximately 16.9% have had food insecurity; 23% are children.”

Using the grant money and funds from the 5k, the backpack food was purchased from the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina for a nominal rate. As the bags moved down the assembly line, students packed each with enough nonperishable food for four meals—consisting of juice, milk, some type of protein, apple sauce, and cereal—and an inspirational note. The goal was to pack at least 2,500 meals for 600 children in Forsyth County.

As stated in their press release, “The members of orsyth Country Day School’s Forsyth Backpack Program Club hope to encourage and inspire other middle and high school students to engage in similar initiatives through Forsyth Backpack Program. Interested students are encouraged to contact Yasmin Horner (yasminhorner@fcds.org) to start clubs and projects of their own and continue aiding the youth of Forsyth County.”

Watching these students work together with enthusiasm and exuberance was inspiring. We could take a lesson from them. Volunteers come in all ages. Anyone can help who has the desire to make a difference. Let’s make that difference!

HFL Football Offers Inspiring, Christian Youth League

County has been offering a unique opportunity for middle and high school students since 2016. It’s to be a part of the “Davie Pride” Varsity and Junior-Varsity football teams, a member of the HFL. They welcome students in public schools, charter schools, private schools, and homeschools in Davie, orsyth, Yadkin, Iredell, Rowan, and Davidson counties and surrounding communities. The only requirements are that the student be enrolled in school or already a high school graduate (also in the age range allowed), not currently playing on another football team.

For Junior-Varsity, the students must be ages 12 to 15 as of August 1st, 2018. For Varsity, they must be 15 to 18 years old as of August 1st, 2018. All “open practices” and home games are played at Smith Grove Field at 4155 US-Hwy 158, in Advance, NC. The team travels for away games. Players are asked to sign a code of conduct acknowledging that the game is played for fun; that they will always attempt to maintain good sportsmanship and show respect for their fellow players, coaches, and referees; that they will not be prideful, and will encourage (never discourage) any player, regardless of their level of play. Parents as well are asked to show the same respect towards those participating and involved, including fellow parents in attendance. Parents understand that the priority is not winning. Instead, it’s to “build confidence” in these young men and provide experiences that make them better citizens in their community and life. Richard adds, “Any player who wants a lot of playing time on game day will very much enjoy Davie Pride ootball.”

It’s not often you see this type of organized sports offered in an environment that inspires biblical principles and values and imparts those ideals to its athletes, coaches, officials, and parents alike. Davie Pride football abides in these core beliefs to help these young men succeed far beyond the playing field. The program’s hope is to provide more than a recreation activity, but also to add to the building blocks of a strong character, greater confidence, a dedicated faith to guide them through life, and a willingness to help others do the same.

All persons interested in participating are encouraged to attend a Davie Pride “Open Practice” at Smith Grove ield (4177 S wy 158, Advance, NC) every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00 to7:30 pm from March 20th through July 12th. This includes new players and returning players. Richard advises, “There is no cost to attend 2018 open practices. Participating players should wear shorts/sweats, a T-shirt and cleats, provide their own hydration, and be prepared for light conditioning, basic drill, and offense/defense series rotation (noncontact).” These are voluntary, no contact, open practice sessions and attendance is solely at the player’s discretion. BEHIND EVERY STATISTIC IS A CHILD WHO WAS LOVED

seems every day on the news we see there’s been another death from a drug overdose.

It is estimated that in North Carolina more

than 1,100 people die from unintentional drug overdoses every year. Nationwide, overdose deaths have exceeded car accidents as the principal cause of accidental fatalities. Fortunately for most of us, these are just numbers, we don’t attach a face or a name to a number, but for Brad and Shauna Hunter of Clemmons, NC, these statistics hit home on March 4th, 2018, when they found their 17-year-old son, Mason, lifeless in his bed after asphyxiating in his sleep, the result of a one-time experimentation with what they believe may have been the synthetic opioid methadone, often used to taper people off opioid dependence. Now, Mason’s parents are taking the loss of their son and trying to make sure no other family has to lose a child, with their “Speak Up, Speak Out: Save a Life” initiative, stressing the fact that one time trying the wrong thing is all that it takes to end a life.

Shauna Hunter, Mason’s Mom, along with her husband, Brad, raised three children, teaching them from an early age that when talking about drugs and alcohol, “You never know what is in something and you may be allergic to an ingredient. Your first time may be your last time.” Like most kids, the response to Shauna’s warning was, “Oh, Mom, nothing is going to happen to me; you worry too much.” But on March 4th, 2018, Shauna and Brad’s worst nightmare came true, when they found Mason had died in his sleep. “Mason’s friends knew that something was wrong, that he had ingested a substance earlier in the evening, but didn’t know the signs of an overdose and were scared to let us know. They said if they had known he had overdosed, they wouldn’t have let him go to sleep. I don’t want any other parents or families experiencing what our family is going through now with the loss of Mason. My heart breaks for the ’tweens, teenagers and emerging adults who think they are invincible. It’s not just ‘junkies’ who die; adverse effects to drugs and alcohol can have deadly consequences, as with Mason, after their having tried something just once. There are no do-overs in this life for many in these situations,” said Shauna. ven with all the warnings and seeing the statistics, kids are still experimenting, but why?

Alexis Overstreet, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Addiction Specialist in Winston-Salem and owner of Metaspace Counseling PLLC, explains, “Teenagers and emergent adults, 13-25 years old, want to feel like they belong.’ Due to their developmental stage, both the socio-emotional and cognitive portions of the brain are developing, making more work for them to think ahead about the potential consequences. Poor decisionmaking, poor impulse control and a desire for risk increase due to the drive to fulfill that socio-emotional developmental state. But they continue to learn from their environment and life experiences. As we age, the decision-making part of our brain matures and we are able to make better decisions by weighing the potential risks and consequences. The key is education! ’Tweens, teenagers and emerging adults can engage their frontal lobe and executive functioning. Parents, family members and positive adults continue to be a strong influence in the decisionmaking processes of these age groups. The more information we, as informed adults, share on how to handle crisis situations related to substances, drug use and overdoses, the greater the chance to reduce substance use and overdose in our young people.” This description fits Mason and his friends perfectly,

911 GOOD SAMARITAN LAW CAN SAVE A LIFE Many times people who are around someone in crisis due to taking drugs or alcohol don’t call for help, because they are afraid they’ll get in trouble; they don’t know about the 911 Good Samaritan Law and that education is part of Speak Up, Speak Out: Save a Life.

“Unfortunately, people who witness or experience a drug overdose do not seek medical attention because they are afraid of getting in trouble for drug or alcohol crimes. For this reason, countless individuals die needlessly because of alcohol poisoning and an overdose from prescription painkillers and illicit drugs. Seeking to address this problem in our state, the North Carolina legislature passed an overdose prevention law in April 2013. The Good Samaritan Law states that anyone who is experiencing or witnesses a drug overdose may seek help without fear of being prosecuted for possession of small amounts of drugs or paraphernalia. In addition, an underage drinker who seeks medical help for anyone will not be prosecuted by law enforcement or campus authorities if they state their name while calling and stay with the victim until paramedics or police arrive. In August 2015, new changes to the Good Samaritan Law (SB154) went into effect, allowing people who are at risk of having an opiate or opioid overdose, family members, or friends, or a person at risk for an opiate-related overdose to purchase naloxone, an antidote to opiate overdose. Practicing licensed pharmacists in North Carolina no longer need a written or faxed prescription from a physician to dispense naloxone. Greater access to life-saving medicine equals more lives saved. This law also protects pharmacists from civil or criminal liability if they dispense naloxone under a standing order. We hope that the knowledge of the 911 Good Samaritan Law will be passed along as we share our story,” Shauna commented. The message of “Speak Up, Speak Out: Save a Life,” although rooted in tragedy, is a hope that others can be saved.

The Hunters are in the early stages of grief and there’s so much more to come their way, but this initiative is a way to make Mason’s life count for the 17 years he was here and for the many years he will not be. There are no perfect parents and no perfect kids. Mistakes happen every day, but not all of them can kill you. xperimenting with drugs and alcohol can kill, but if you are concerned about a friend in crisis, know that you can alert the authorities without getting into trouble. Change in this epidemic of losing kids far too soon can begin with education and the realization that this is a problem for our whole community, not just one family. *Forsyth Family will soon have a follow-up article addressing how to recognize an overdose.

The statistics speak for themselves. There is an opioid epidemic in our country and drugs today aren’t the same as those of 10-20 years ago.

New designer drugs, synthetically produced, laced with other drugs, as well as prescription medications can and do kill the first time you use them. Keep an eye on your kids for mood changes, dietary changes, weight loss or gain, and who they are spending their time with. And just JU NE 2018 / 49

Obviously, there are so many ideas for Mason jars! Whether you paint them, or leave them clear, or even make a chandelier from them—have fun with an inexpensive classic.

Grate your own Parmesan cheese and store it in a Mason jar! You can use the old lid from the store-bought Parmesan cheese to fit on the glass jar, or purchase a shaker lid from Amazon.

2 vanilla beans per jar Funnel (if you don’t use a wide-mouthed Mason jar) Cut the vanilla bean in half, and then lengthwise, starting a ½ inch from the end. It should resemble a clothespin after you cut it. Scraping the beans out of the pods is optional, but everything goes into the jar. Pour in your alcohol of choice until the beans are covered, but leave enough space that the beans can be shaken. Seal, then shake the jar every few days.

The vanilla extract will be ready in about eight weeks. You can leave the pods or remove them.

In celebration of the day, children can prepare special ather’s Day placemats for each member of the family, or create a centerpiece arrangement from letters spelling out “Dad” or “ ather’s Day,” or including a variety of pictures.

AFTERNOON EXPERIENCE

Being together and making memories is one of the key parts to a celebrated day. Plan an activity around one of Dad’s favorite hobbies, such as grilling, fishing, boating, biking, or hiking. hile many parks are in the area, a National park such as anging Rock can provide diverse activities, such as rock climbing, swimming, fishing and boating; scenery and beautiful waterfalls; and walks along easy to advanced trails. It may not be often you have the opportunity to enjoy a day in nature when the weather is ideal. Pack a lunch, plenty of water, and clothes, in case spontaneity takes hold of the moment. If Dad seeks high adventure, why not schedule a day in the trees! A zipline or obstacle course could be a long-remembered day of thrills and togetherness. (Check age restrictions, so all members in the family can participate.)

Summer Reading Fun at the Library

matter what age you are, searching for the perfect book at the library can always be a fun time. After all, libraries can be a place to find your next favorite novel, learn new skills, hear exciting speakers, and more. This summer, you can do just that at the orsyth County Public Library! rom une 8th– uly 27th, the orsyth County Public Library will hold its annual summer reading program, with this year’s theme, “Libraries Rock.”

“This year’s theme is centered on music and it is not just for children. The summer reading program has something for everyone,” stated ess Schaefer, librarian at the orsyth Central Children’s Library in downtown inston-Salem.

According to Schaefer, there are copies of catalogs with summer reading programs at each branch library in orsyth County.

“All activities are 100 free, but some do re uire people to register to attend. hether or not a program needs registration can be found in the summer reading catalog. There are tons of activities from music to arts and crafts to family events,” Schaefer commented.

Below are some of the many programs that the libraries will be featuring during their “Libraries Rock” summer.

At seven branches, the ake orest niversity Museum of Anthropology is presenting a hands-on program entitled “All kinds of Instruments,” where children can learn about different instruments from around the world.

Six branch locations will feature times with the Balloon Lady, where she will create intriguing balloon creations for kids of all ages.

The North Carolina oo is going to bring the music of various animals to several libraries with their program, “Animal Sound Bites.”

Lastly, Schaefer described the featured system-wide performers, Imagine Circus, which will be presenting three different programs across the county: “Acro Alphabet,” “Time with Tain,” and a “Circus Skills orkshop” for kids 8–12 years of age.

Pianist Pam owland will give a free concert entitled “American Music: a 400-Year Adventure” at the alkertown Branch Library on Saturday, une 30th at 1:00 pm.

Movie nights and game nights are a favorite among many libraries.

The list for adult programs includes acrylic painting classes, music trivia, academic lectures, genealogy classes, organic gardening, karaoke nights, basket weaving, gaming events, adult coloring, and so much more!

In addition to the hundreds of programs, the library provides reading lists with recommended books for all ages. ith the featured books and reading lists, people can log in their reading hours and enter to win a 25 Barnes and Noble gift card from their local branch library. DEBBIE LINVILLE ach month, I spotlight two books guaranteed to delight readers and provide fun activities to further extend the meaning of each reading experience. ith so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 35-year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers and writers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

SPIRIT OF COURAGE On a recent trip to Amsterdam, I took a walking tour through the ewish uarters, ending at the home of ewish diarist and well-known olocaust victim, Anne rank. Important sites and monuments relating to the Nazi occupation and ewish persecution in the city from 1942–1945 were pointed out along the 3-hour trek, but it was the entries from Anne’s diary along the route that helped to bring this chapter of Dutch history to life in a very personal way. earing the words penned by this courageous thirteen-year-old gave a true sense of just how horrifying times were for the ewish community under itler’s reign and the Dutch underground who risked their lives to hide the ews.

The long trip home was filled with delays and layovers which afforded me time to read an additional book (I always pack more books than I can read just in case). On the heels of the visit to Anne rank’s house, I was still processing this most unimaginable period in human history and decided to read a relatively little-known title centered on II Blue, by oyce ostetter. This story, like the Diary of Anne Frank, is told from the perspective of a thirteen-year-old girl, Ann ay.

Thousands of miles away from Amsterdam in ickory, North Carolina, Ann ay is asked to accept the role of “man of the house” when her father leaves to fight the German forces.

This first-hand account of the challenges of war and the 1944

Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl This memoir of a thirteenyear old ewish girl and her family who went into hiding during 1942 to escape the cruelty of the Nazis is perhaps the best known and most personally compelling account to come from orld ar II. Anne provides vivid descriptions of the hardships of living hidden away in the “secret annex” of an old office building hunger, tight living uarters, boredom, and the daily fear of discovery by the Gestapo. She is a remarkably talented and relatable writer who is able to provide insights into the everyday problems of being a teenager, as well as share a sensitive, thoughtful, spirited, and at times humorous, account of what it means to stand strong and hopeful in times of greatest despair.

race to the circled calendar day in une labeled “The Last Day of School” is defined with one dreamyeyed thought, “The start of summer vacation!” Prior to that final day, though, there are a number of tasks that still re uire attention, and answers from both students and parents. nding the year on a positive note will certainly help everyone in the educational triangle, including teachers, start thinking of the new school year.

Grades Define Your Work Ethic Statistically, the first and third marking periods often reflect the highest levels of achievement for students. The second marking period is met with new challenges in organization and time management and new material, while the final grading period is defined by motivation levels. No matter what the month, every assignment bearing a name reflects a defined uality of work. hile it’s common for students to feel their enthusiasm waning, it is important to find new ways to boost energy levels.

This may mean shorter work sessions, and more breaks or time to enjoy the outdoors.

Reading, Mathematics, and Writing: Continuing the Momentum

different type of learning occurs during the low-key and relaxing days of summer vacation. hen children are not focused on the thought of educational practices, they can jump by leaps and bounds beyond their own defined levels of comfort. The end of school marks the beginning of continuing the momentum without an alarm clock, desk and scheduled classes. In fact, 30 minutes a day, Monday through riday, could be set aside for learning something new, independently or with a family member. Most likely, the 30 minutes may expand to hours, simply because she is enjoying herself.

Reading Not all children can wander into their local public library and find a stack of books of interest and read them one after another independently. Some children need something more appealing, such as a name of an author who writes highinterest books. Therefore, for reading aloud or independently, the following authors will lead the reader on a wonderful adventure: ohn lanagan, .G. oley, Cornelia unke, Brandon Mull, Louis Sachar, Angie Sage, Rick Riordan, and ohnathan Stroud, to name a few.

Consider additional options, such as listening to audiobooks in the car, or for an hour each afternoon. Your public librarian can help you locate or hold a particular audiobook. You may enjoy the narrators of popular books such as im Dale ( arry Potter series, the Stone eart Trilogy, and Peter and the Starcatchers series), Brendan raser (Dragon Rider) or Bronson Pinchot (The League of Princes books.) ncourage your child to visit the non-fiction section of your local library. Through age-appropriate books, she may discover a new interest or expand her knowledge of space and the constellations, Greek and Roman mythology, animals and ocean life, weather, geography, or learn about special events, time periods, or famous people in history.

Math One of the surest ways to boost strategy and computation skills is through gathering the family and playing board games. Increase the excitement by suggesting amily Game Night begin with a dinner of tacos or pizza or a snack of watermelon, or strawberries and whipped cream. Children will boost confidence levels with uni ue games such as “ ead full of Numbers” (7 ), “Sumoku” (8 ), and “Prime Club” (10 ).

Additionally, for children who enjoy their technological time, try www.prodigy.com, a free game for the first through eighth grade; and www.math-play.com, which offers free high-interest math games for kindergarteners through eighth graders; and algebra 1 and 2, geometry, and pre-calculus.

Writing The task of writing may re uire thinking outside the box to aid in boosting confidence levels, and the practice of either penmanship or typing skills. (If it is the latter, invest in a typing software program that offers a keyboard tutorial and typing tests to assess speed and accuracy progress.)

A few writing suggestions: andwriting or typing favorite recipes; Beginning a daily journal or scrap book; Taking photographs and writing about the moment or person; Learning about the poetic style of . . Cummings or dgar Allan Poe, and creating semi-original poems; Sending e-mails to family members in lieu of texting; riting or co-writing an original story; Placing 30 proper and common nouns into a container.

In writing a 10-day story, choose three words daily and incorporate them into the story; Taking notes from a Podcast or television program to increase concentration and listening skills; Learning two new words each day and writing them down.

Start Day One of Vacation On the first full day of summer vacation, discuss the rewards and goals of taking 30 minutes a day to read, write, and engage in math. Allow your child to create, in writing, the rules. hile morning is often the best time to begin a promise of learning, an hour in the afternoon may be a welcome break in the day. Signatures will be the seal to the agreement. (Parents can also make a promise to read daily, or listen to a podcast or audiobook, and define a form of writing.)

In the fall, your child will discover she has progressed, perhaps noting she feels more relaxed in class or more confident to work independently. A little effort combined with family encouragement can make a big difference!

There

I am staring at a blank word doc. Already, I can hear the voice of some parody of my 6th-grade teacher.

She’s fierce, with bulging eyes, snapping the white board with a wooden pointer; the board reads in big, bold letters, “ OOK.” She says, “You’ve got about seven words before your reader gets bored!” Great. I place my fingers on the keyboard, a sloppy sentence comes out and I delete it uickly with a wince and a glance over my shoulder, hoping no one saw that travesty of a sentence. I change a word, read it, hate it, delete it, repeat.

Glancing at the time, I panic a bit and pull out my assignment sheet. Rules, restrictions, and re uirements, pop out at me, tangling up my brain, stomping on half-formed thoughts and hopeful ideas. Nightmare! I’ll do it tomorrow night. ith all of these voices in my head, I find it so. hard. to. just. start. typing. out. the. words. that. I. want. to. say. It’s paralyzing. A lot of people call this writer’s block; I call it a nightmare. Sure, I’ve learned a lot about how to get going and I’ve got some advice to give, but here’s the thing: there are always voices in my head that bother me every time I start to write the key is learning to uiet them. ere’s a metaphor for you: a piece of writing is like a raindrop on water. It starts as a little bundle of knowledge and ideas hitting the page and ripples up, down and to both sides until it’s done growing and settles down. The process of writing doesn’t have to begin at the intro and end at the conclusion. Often, I just pound out everything I want to say on my topic and see what I have to work with. Sometimes the last sentence I write is the one I use as the hook.

My teacher pops up in my head before I even touch my keyboard. ow am I supposed to get anything done if I have

to wait until I have figured out every word of my sentence before I write it riting a sentence should be like kneading a hunk of clay: you’re just getting it ready; later you can shape it into something distinguishable. The first draft of any piece of writing should be a complete disaster: messy, badly formed, random thoughts here, misspellings over there. Now, if you speak a sentence there is no way to take it back and start again; you have to accept what you said and continue. ith writing you get to make any mistakes you want and have the ability to delete them: never to be seen again ever!

Meticulously crafting sentences one by one is like using a pen while trying to sketch a face. You get super attached to the sentence and it is not easily erased when you realize it is irrelevant or is taking the piece in a bad direction. Try resolving the whole structure and direction of the piece before going over the sentences in ink. If you do fall in love, try to eliminate the emotional connection act like it isn’t your writing or take a day and come back to see it from a new perspective. hen I was starting my paper, along with listening to the voices in my head and worrying about a hook, stressing about all the re uirements that go with the writing was a major mistake. orrying about the word count, the rubric, the syntax, would be like drawing the outline of the face in ink, then trying to cram all the features inside.

New writers develop syntax and word choice; experienced ones develop ideas. Many start writing with the purpose of seeing where the writing takes them: they are sketching out the nose, experimenting with the eyes; some parts will be irrelevant, some ill- formed, but some will be golden. Those golden ideas could not have been reached if the writers spent all of their time staring at a blank word doc, worrying about their first sentence.

that my children are getting older, and I’ve been through most of the youth- sports phase of their lives, I feel I can clearly assess how far this industry has come.

Not to sound old-fashioned, but when I grew up, we didn’t have as many of the advanced leagues, sports academies and camps, and the multitude of professional development training that exists today in youth sports. As a young child, if you wanted to play sports, you simply joined a local YMCA, or if that was not affordable, you took part in the local Parks and Recreation leagues available. It didn’t seem to be as competitive as it is today; everyone wanted to win, of course, but we were also out to have a good time.

Today, it seems different. More and more young players are encouraged to play in higher athletic programs and leagues, including AA , and on travel teams, for example. Nothing against these programs, they do an outstanding job of coaching and developing their players, which is part of the reason for their success. My concern is more for the players who aren’t as athletic, or don’t have the means to participate in these advanced programs or train with the elite coaches in professional academies, and so forth. Those players, it seems, often don’t get the chance to play when they get older, in high school or in other programs for youths of their age group.

I don’t fault the high schools entirely; after all, they’re feeling the pressure to put winning teams on the court and field, and so oftentimes they will pull their athletes from the pool of advanced players who they know have played at the higher levels. Makes sense if you’re a coach, but again, what happens to that segment of society that wasn’t able to take advantage of those training prospects growing up It doesn’t mean they don’t have the skill or ability to be just as good, nor the heart to want to achieve just as much. All it means is they didn’t have the opportunity to be taught like many of their peers. That’s no reason to shut them out.

An article in Tennis Magazine (November December 2017) about unsung heroes in sports is about a coach who addresses this very concern with tremendous success. The story is about David Steinbach, the head tennis coach for Brookfield Central igh School in Brookfield, isconsin.

As the story goes, when asked to take on the head coaching role for the school’s tennis team, he had only one condition that he be permitted to run a “no-cut” program.

The school, in need of a coach, agreed, and that was the beginning of one of the most successful tennis programs in isconsin history.

Coach Steinbach is well respected and admired by his student-athletes, primarily because he treats everyone the same and expects each player to put their best effort forward, no matter where they are on the roster. hen the young player at the bottom of the roster knows Coach is watching him as much as he is those at the top, they’re more motivated to try harder. is techni ues and drills are designed for all to learn and grow in the sport to reach the best of their ability. That’s why today he has 115 girls on the women’s team and 80 boys on the men’s team. ow does he manage it all e has parents and volunteers who are more than willing to help and he trains them in the best way to bring these young players along in his system. The results speak for themselves, 13 state championships, 28 conference championships, over 1000 victories, and the 81-year-old Steinbach has been named “National Coach of the Year” six times.

The majority of his players won’t go on to play on their college team, nor will they be a part of the actual matches that won the state or conference tournament. owever, as a member of the team, they are still champions and they carry that title with them along with their wonderful experiences on the court and with their teammates, in addition to all they learned from Coach Steinbach and his trained volunteers.

It would be nice if there were more like Coach Steinbach out there, as well as programs like his, giving all kids the opportunity to be a part of something larger than themselves. There’s no uestion it makes a huge impact, and very well may allow these kids to go further in life to achieve things they never thought possible, all because of this valuable experience. That’s what matters most, I think.

is National A uarium Month. Did you have a pet fish as a child, or do you have a child who wants a fish In the ranking of popular pets, fish come in third, right behind cats and dogs. Statistically, that might be a bit surprising, but consider the benefits associated with keeping fish as pets.

E ENSE In comparison with dogs and cats, pet fish are uite economical. Once the basics are bought fishbowl tank, fish food, decorative accessories, filtration system (depending on size of tank), and, of course, the fish the ongoing cost is very low. There’s no need for special treats, litter boxes, scoopers, chew toys, beds, collars, leashes, or bags of food that must be stored away so that fur-babies don’t help themselves. Not to mention, the additional cost of installing fences or veterinary visits.

AINTENANCE On-going maintenance is minimal as well. Keeping a tank clean and in good working order takes very little time.

Including a moss ball, ghost shrimp, or other algae eaters to clean the tank just adds to the aesthetics. Basic fish food is about the size of a salt shaker; no storage issue here.

DESIGNING T E TAN Taking time to research is important. Determine what size tank is needed and whether you plan to have freshwater or saltwater fish. It’s also important to research the types of fish that co-habit well together. Some fish breeds are more aggressive than others. It’s not a good thing to start with four or five fish to find only one swimming around at the end of the day.

The decorative accessories can range from practical to uirky and anywhere in between.

style. As long as there’s enough water, your fish don’t care so if you want a disco-theme, a country tank, or an art-deco look go for it. Incorporate the tank into your personal style so that it works within the design of your living space.

Your stress level is reduced, anxiety goes down, and blood pressure and heart rate are lower all from watching fish swimming. It doesn’t matter what size the tank is the overall health benefits are consistent. ith such well-documented benefits, it’s no wonder that a uariums are part of the office d cor for many doctors and dentists. Creating a calming environment for patients before they go in for their appointment makes the overall experience better for everyone.

As many a parent can attest, the pet may be the child’s, but the care and feeding chores often fall onto the parents. aving a fish as a first pet is a good steppingstone to taking on the responsibility and care associated with having a pet.

Goldfish are at the top of the most common of fish pets; there are more than 125 types from which to select. A beta fish pet may also be a good start. Given their wide range of colors, a male beta can be found in almost any color imaginable, from red, green, blue, yellow, and so on. Betas are often kept as solitary pets due to the male’s aggressive tendencies. ith proper care, their life span is about three years.

TAKE A BREAK

Jesus said, “Come to me … and I will give you rest.” ~ Matthew 11:28 You’ve probably heard your Dad or Mom say, “Whew! What a day! I’m exhausted!” But it’s not only grownups who work hard and need a break. The Bible says that even kids get tired (see Isaiah 40:30)—but you knew that, didn’t you? Although this is summer vacation time, the dayto-day stuff of life can still wear you out.

What’s pretty cool is that you can relax right where you are, without taking a vacation.

Sometimes relaxing is just doing something different, or doing something in a different way.

Have you learned to play a new game or tried a “strange” new food? Have you ever changed the furniture around in your bedroom? (You should get an “okay” from Mom or Dad before trying this.) What about reading or drawing outside, instead of inside? See if you can come up with some other ideas.

CHILDREN’S CHURCH

In the verse at the top of this page, Jesus says to come to Him for rest. How could you do that? Read a Bible story? Talk to Him? Maybe it’s just remembering that He’s right beside you, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing.

The next verse says to “take up His yoke” and learn from him. Wait! More learning? I thought this was summer vacation! And what’s this yoke He wants us to carry? It sounds like work, doesn’t it? If you’ve ever seen two horses pulling a cart, the part that holds the horses together is called a yoke. The yoke helps them work together as a team. Jesus wants you to be joined to Him so that He can help you—yes, even during summer vacation. When you remember that Jesus is right beside you, it makes everything easier. You learn what God is like. You grow to be more like Him. The end of verse 29 says, “…and you will find rest for your soul.” Ahhh, now that’s what we’re talking about—rest ! Taking a break! if you will, join me for a moment of silence in honor of my dearly departed dogwood tree. ach year, around aster Sunday, this lovely tree would blossom in beautiful pink flowers. ntil this aster. I had hoped that maybe it was just sleeping in late this year. But, it still hasn’t bloomed and I think it’s safe to say it’s not going to. I don’t know what happened to it, other than the fact it had the misfortune of being planted in my yard; thus, destined for a short life.

I did some research and one of the things I learned is that it would be a bad idea to plant another dogwood in the same spot because a fungus or insects may have killed the original tree and those things could remain in the soil, posing a threat to the new tree.

This reminds me of the parable esus told about scattering seeds. You can read it in full in Matthew 13. esus uses this story about seeds scattered in different types of soil to teach his disciples that not everyone who hears the Good News will be receptive to it. For a variety of reasons, when we plant seeds in others about the Kingdom of God, those seeds may not take root. hen this happens, when we tell someone about esus and they reject what we have to say, it’s important not to take it personally or get discouraged. God is still at work. Keep loving that person, and trusting that eventually, when their “soil” has been properly prepared by the oly Spirit, those seeds you planted will take root and grow into something more beautiful than you ever could have imagined.

Joyful Things/ Stressful Things Most

of us think of spring as a joyful time when everything comes to life and brilliant colors abound. owever, it’s also a time when stress can creep in and spoil the day. hile students are preparing for final exams and graduations, parents are trying to budget for summer vacations and make child care arrangements or plan activities for the months when the kids are home from school.

This can be a stressful time for pastors, too. It’s wedding season and many pastors find their calendars filling up uickly. Officiating weddings is a high-pressure job! xpectations are high and your pastor wants to do whatever he can to ensure that the weddings he performs go smoothly there’s a lot on the line!

Lessons From a Pencil

I

am never very far from a pencil. Pencils (and tubes of Burt’s Bees lip balm) are stuffed in every crevice of my life: my purse; my car; my nightstand; my kitchen; the living room; the basement; and my desk drawers are bursting at the seams with pencils. I may have a hard time finding a pen when the need for ink arises, but need a pencil? I’ve got you covered. Just make sure you give it back. It may be my favorite. (Ssshhh... They’re all my favorite.)

I couldn’t help but think we can learn a lot from a pencil.

A New Pencil “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

It could write a masterpiece from heartfelt gratitude...

It could be used to compose a song of worship...

It could be used to draw a magnificent work of art to reflect the beautiful, amazing grace of our Savior!

Just as a new pencil can be used for endless possibilities, so can we as new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

A pencil needs to be sharpened in order to be useful. What sharpens a pencil? A sharp razor. Since the Bible is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, we have to allow it to keep us sharp, or we run the risk of becoming dull and less effective. Reading the Bible regularly is a key part of staying sharp. But we also need to let the Holy Spirit lead us.

A Pencil Eraser “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” ~ Galatians 5:16 NLT “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” ~ 1 John 1:9 NLT On the opposite end of the pencil is an eraser.

When we accept Christ as our Savior, He’s already wiped our page clean

by His grace. However, we’re still human. And like a pencil, we may mess up, or leave some smudges on the page as we begin our Christian walk. However, all we need to do is turn the pencil over. We repent and He is faithful to forgive.

If we allow Him, the Holy Spirit can use us to write a story beyond anything we could ever write ourselves. He can use us in unexpected ways.

A pencil may seem an ordinary, unexciting object. But in the right hands, it can accomplish extraordinary things.

If you will allow yourself to be a pencil in the Lord’s hands, He will use you in amazing ways to bring honor and glory to Him. He can use you to write a story that touches the lives around you and the lives of everyone you meet, so they can see that you are in the hands of the Master.

“What’s

in a name?” The uestion has been asked innumerable times since Shakespeare first penned uliette’s uery. She was right, a rose’s sweet fragrance is not dependent upon, or a condition of, the name of the plant. A name is uite simply a form of identification or association. owever, unlike uliette, I do not think names can so easily be dismissed: names are powerful.

Last month I traveled with some friends to North Myrtle Beach to participate in a halfmarathon. aving not trained or prepared as well as I should have, somewhere around mile 8 of the 13.1 total miles, I began to ache. My feet were swollen; my fingers were giant; my legs seemed as though I had ankle weights. Those last several miles were a mental and physical battle to just keep moving, despite the motivating musical set list streaming from my iphone. I tried to keep my shoulders back and head up, but there was no “ ye of the Tiger” strong enough to raise me up to this challenge.

Strangely enough, there was a gentleman, dressed in a pink tu-tu, standing along the sidelines of the race. is cheers and encouragement to the racers rose above the volume of my headphones, and I listened to his words: “You can do it, Anna!” “You’ve got it, Kathy!” “Come on,

annah, don’t uit now.” “ ust keep on running, Tara!” e wasn’t just cheering us on. e was cheering us on by name, printed on our racing bibs.

Now, I had never met this man before, nor will I ever see him again, but I’ll never forget him there at mile marker 8.

My heart swelled with warmth when he called my name. “Go, ennifer! Keep running!” Somehow, a renewed sense of strength came with his praise, and with it a confidence to finish the race.

In Scripture we find a repeating narrative of naming and renaming which spans the entirety of the text. Beginning with our faith father, Abraham, who was once “Abram.” pon God’s covenant promise to make a great nation from Abram’s linage, he was given a new name: “Abraham.” Likewise, his wife, who was born Sarai, was renamed Sarah when included in the holy promise (Gen. 17). acob was renamed “Israel” after wrestling with a divine opponent all night (Gen.32).

Naomi was renamed “Mara” in a whirlwind of grief (Ruth 1). Daniel and company were each renamed in Babylonian captivity: “Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego” (Dan. 1). Simon, one of the earliest of esus’ disciples, was renamed “Peter,” after making a bold declaration of

faith (Matt. 16). And the ewish “Saul” of Tarsus became one of the most important figures of the Apostolic Age, founding several Christian Churches around urope and Asia Minor as the Apostle Paul, after encountering the risen Christ on the road to Damascus (Acts 13). Yes, friends.

Names are of great significance and can be powerful.

In the era following the Babylonian exile, the prophet Isaiah wrote encouraging words and a message of hope to a dislocated and misplaced people of God. They were reminded, despite desperate and depressing circumstances, they were to be of good courage because “Y ” had called them by name. God had formed them in their mother’s womb, they were of infinite value and worth.

As Christians, we cannot forget the value of bearing Christ’s name in the world. It is our joy and our responsibility to witness to the life, death and resurrection of the one who sets us free, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. hile we daily make choices to resist the things of this world that wear us out or weigh us down, we can also live more fully into the Kingdom of God; we, too, can hear God’s calling us by name and we may be encouraged to finish the race set before us.

“Energize the Ballpark” Concert on June 23rd

The inston-Salem Dash are once again partnering with nergize Ministries to bring fans a very special concert following the Dash’s 4 p.m. contest against the Down ast ood Ducks on Saturday, une 23rd. The concert will take place approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the contest. ans can enjoy the show from the seating bowl and will have limited access to the field.

Performers from the ever-popular Passion Music out of Atlanta, Georgia, will be entertaining the crowd with electrifying contemporary Christian Sidewalk Prophets performed at the 2017 Energize concert at BB&T Ballpark.

Known for their annual Christian conferences and their lively entertaining and spirited concerts, Passion has hosted concerts in the nited States and around the world. The organization has taken home four GMA Dove Awards and sold over 1.8 million units.

Their last album, Salvation’s Tide is Rising, which was released in 2016, debuted at number one on iTunes. Their latest, Whole Heart, is sure to follow in this success.

Lessons Adults Can Learn from Children

Throughout life, we encounter numerous teachers in different forms. Schoolteachers can be remarkable; experience teaches us the harder, more effective way; and our parents serve as our life teachers. But have you ever thought what we can learn from children Most people believe that children only learn from us. But if you look closer, there are many things they can teach us as adults!

ARL SSN SS. Some kids have daring, confident, throw-caution-to-the-wind spirits. They don’t know to fear the danger they haven’t yet learned. Children may spontaneously approach strangers and strike up a conversation without even worrying about how they will come across. They may have no reluctance meeting new people or speaking in front of their class. They may also have an anxious thirst to ride that thrilling new theme park ride, although they may still be too small. Children are naturally fearless, because they haven’t yet learned such fears. But as adults, we can also be fearless despite our fears.

Although we’ve learned our fears, we can still adopt a childlike fearlessness and just go for it when we apply for that job, start that nonprofit, or when we share our backstory.

SAYING “NO!” hen toddlers learn how to speak, one of the easiest words for them to utter is “No!” You will tell or ask them anything, and they will yell, “No, no, noooo!” But playfully, of course. ere’s the thing: they say “No” so effortlessly and uickly.

Although they may not always know exactly what they are saying “No” to, we can learn how to say “No” to others when we really need to. Many adults still struggle with this, but will learn that saying “No” will make their lives easier and keep their burdens from snowballing. So, you don’t have to say “No” like a toddler, although it’s understandable if you can’t fulfill other people’s re uests because your body or schedule won’t permit it.

CAR R SPIRIT. Ahh, the nostalgia of running around outside, spontaneously splashing our bodies in a great pile of leaves; box sledding down a snowy hill, not even worrying about school or responsibilities. Many of us may look at children in admiration and wish, “If only our lives were still this simple!” Children may not have bills, jobs, or share the responsibilities as we adults do, but we can still learn how to be carefree responsibly carefree! Yes, being relaxed and content even when we have payment deadlines and errands. Taking time every day out of your schedule to do something that relaxes you will relax your mind and body to a point where your stressors won’t pinch you as much. Also, since jobs can be a major source of stress, try finding a job you will love, one that feeds your passions, even if it’s a side hustle. Apart from your hectic day job, you will have something that you will love to engage in. Also, remember to take pleasure in the subtleties of life: momma’s home cooking, the laughter and joy of your children, traveling, sleeping, anything that de-stresses you and gives you peace. This will awaken your carefree spirit animal.

They uickly grasp their colors, animals, numbers, and letters. It’s also a known fact that the best time to learn a foreign language is before the age of 10. Their minds are both hungry and thirsty for knowledge!

In the same way, we must stay willing to learn more. A child may think by the time they become a “grown up” that they will have all the answers. e’ll never have all the knowledge in this life, but we can never stop learning. Sometimes we let pride get in the way of learning new things and we eventually stagnate if we let that pride go too far. So, we must embrace knowledge as children do.

hether it’s the uickness to grasp a belief or giving to others the same way toddlers freely hand us objects, there is sometimes nothing wrong with letting children be our teachers.

It’s a GRAND Life

I

have been “Gigi” for 10 years. I now have six grandchildren with number seven due in August. You would think I had the grandparenting thing down, but, to this day, I still question whether I am doing or saying the right thing at any given moment.

This is more about my handling of a situation than comments from my daughters, but after hearing from other grandparents, it gives me pause.

As the mother of three girls, I have a very close relationship with my daughters. I appreciate that they ask for my advice knowing that I will not judge them if they ignore it by choosing a different path.

That statement is true, but sometimes I still question what was wrong with my counsel. When asked, the response of doing or saying something in a different way made better sense given the situation. My advice doesn’t always take into account other mitigating factors that make it less helpful, but it does make a resolution clearer to them.

Sometimes advice is just a way of seeing things from all angles.

Years ago, there was a sitcom called “Everybody Loves Raymond.” The couple (Deborah and Raymond) and their three children lived across the street from Raymond’s parents. His mother (Marie) was always criticizing Deborah in a not-so-subtle way under the guise of being helpful.

Marie thought she knew best about everything and her way was the only way. She would shake her head, roll her eyes, and sigh. Even if her advice had been good, I doubt it would’ve been taken because of the know-it-all way it was presented.

The other day I went over to one of my daughter’s homes to watch my grandchildren. It had been a busy week and start to the weekend for her family. I noticed laundry that needed folding and dishes that needed to go in the dishwasher. The children’s playroom was upside down. I managed to get the clothes folded and the dishes going, but they were home before I could get in the playroom. I

told my daughter I was going to come back on Monday

and work on that room. Did I overstep? In my mind, I know how busy she is and just wanted to take some of the load off, but maybe she saw it as my being critical of her cleaning skills. Was I being Marie? Would I do this if she were my daughter-in-law instead of my daughter?

I talked to her later to let her know that there was no judgment. I knew first-hand how easy it was to focus on more important tasks at hand and get to the children’s playroom when time allowed. I did, however, point out that the children were old enough to put their toys and books away when they finished with them. It was time for them to help and be responsible for cleaning up the mess they made. Again, helpful motherly advice or criticism?

This leads me to grandchildren. When, if the parents are present, is it ever proper to correct the child’s behavior?

Do you say something to them about helping to keep their room straight, or to settle down, or to not interrupt?

Is that overstepping the bounds? My grandchildren are respectful, happy, well-adjusted little people, but they are children. Their parents are doing an excellent job raising them. I intervene, not meaning to offend or make their parents feel like they’re not doing their jobs but, hopefully, as reiterating what their parents have taught them.

It can be a fine line – like many things, it is all in the presentation.

I Never Thought of That

You

know what would be nice? If my children woke up every morning with warning labels attached.

See, I can parent pretty effectively in the areas that I can anticipate being an issue. I know to teach my children not to run in the road. I know I have to show them how to get my attention without interrupting. I know we need to practice being nice to little sister.

But every day my children invent something that I never, ever thought I’d have to tell them not to do. Case in point: yesterday’s swim practice. My boys are six and eight, and with a lot of coaching, I’ve finally started letting them change in the boys’ locker room instead of the family bathroom. I’ve set parameters: they have to stay together.

They have to check the area before they leave and make sure they’ve gotten everything. They know to come to me if anything makes them uncomfortable.

I’m not saying it’s gone completely smoothly. An 11-yearold teammate recently emerged from the locker room to tell me my six-year-old was running naked around the locker room. Sometimes I hear loud yelling and hysterical laughter. Sometimes I hear total silence, which is even more frightening. At one point, I think there was a child in a locker.

But yesterday, my six-year-old did something I never thought to tell him not to do. I was talking to friends, with my back to the locker room door. Suddenly, a look of horror flickered across my friends’ faces. I knew immediately that it was one of my kids. And I knew immediately that I wasn’t going to be happy.

Apparently, the zipper on the backpack had gotten stuck, and one child couldn’t get his shorts out. So he came out to ask for my help…in his Star Wars underwear. Now if he had a morning warning label, I would have known to say, “You shouldn’t come out of the locker room in your underwear.”

But who in their right mind says something like that? Isn’t that obvious? I guess I should just be grateful he had underwear on. His older brother once answered the door completely naked. Bless my poor neighbor’s heart.

I’d be a lot more competent as a parent if I could just get some idea of what to expect, you know? Maybe we need to start a new Facebook page where we share all the things our kids get into. There’s power in knowledge, after all. I know I’m not the only person whose kid killed the minivan CD player by filling it up with pennies while I was strapping his baby brother into the car seat. And surely someone else’s kid has unloaded a bottle of baby powder all over the room during his “quiet time.” I’m quite certain my parenting motto is, “I would have never thought of that!”

STRAWBERRY FROZEN YOGURT (serves 4)

It’s much healthier to eat “in-season,” and right now is strawberry season! After picking all those flats of strawberries, here are some ideas of how to prepare them!

STRAWBERRY SALSA

INGREDIENTS:

4 cups of strawberries, frozen and coarsely chopped

1 pint of fresh strawberries, diced ¾ cup cilantro, chopped

3 Tbsp. honey

1 jalapeño, seeded and diced

½ cup plain Greek yogurt

1 lime, juiced

1 Tbsp. lime juice DIRECTIONS: 1. Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.

2. Pour into a container with a lid and freeze.

NOTE: You may substitute fresh strawberries for frozen ones, just add more liquid while blending and increase the freezing time.

EASY STRAWBERRY JAM (no-pectin recipe)

This jam is great drizzled onto Greek yogurt and on French bread toast with cream cheese.

INGREDIENTS: 16 oz. of strawberries, hulled and coarsely chopped ¾ cup of sugar

½ red onion, diced

2 Tbsp. lemon juice

¼ tsp. salt, or to taste

DIRECTIONS:

¼ tsp. pepper, or to taste

1. In a saucepan over medium heat, mix strawberries, lemon juice and sugar, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place all ingredients into a bowl and carefully mix together.

2. Serve with white “lime” corn chips or blue corn chips.

2. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a rolling boil.

3. Stir frequently while the mixture is boiling, mashing strawberries as you stir until bubbles cover the mixture and jam is thickened (around 10 minutes).

4. Transfer jam to jars and let cool to room temperature.

5. Seal jars and store in refrigerator up to 10 days (or freeze it).

C3 Fitness Adds New Program to Help Parkinson’s Patients

There’s

something new happening at C3 Fitness in Clemmons.

Owner Kelly Lewis has recently added an exciting new program to her gym and personal training studio. At the end of 2017, Lewis first learned about Rock Steady Boxing, a training program for Parkinson’s patients.

“C3 Fitness has been around for six years and has been doing individual, partner and small group personal training,” said Kelly. “Adding Rock Steady Boxing was something I hadn’t planned on doing. I was plugging along, and things were going great, but I began to feel as if it was time to add something onto C3 Fitness to grow more. I didn’t seek this program out. Instead, an acquaintance asked if I had heard of it before. Her mother lived in Greenville, South Carolina, and she wanted her to move here. However, she wouldn’t come without there being a facility that provided Rock Steady Boxing.”

Having a personal connection with the disease due to her father suffering from Parkinson’s, Kelly decided to learn more. In December 2017, she traveled to Indianapolis to get certified and began holding classes for Parkinson’s boxers in January.

“It was an amazing and unreal experience in Indianapolis learning about this international program,” said Kelly. “When I came back, I had most of the equipment that was needed, except the heavy bags and speed bags.

A month later, I stated classes with three boxers, and now the classes have grown to 20 boxers in fewer than three months.”

The mission behind Rock Steady Boxing is to help slow the progression of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease through various exercises, while also improving a person’s strength, balance and flexibility.

“The exercises work on a person’s hand and eye coordination. There are many, many exercises from punching the bags to stacking metal washers,” said Kelly.

Some of the recent boxers were referred to C3 Fitness by neurologists.

However, most of the boxers discovered Kelly through word of mouth or from the Rock Steady Boxing directory. There are four levels of classes, and each class is based on the level of how far the boxers have progressed with their Parkinson’s. However, there is a mixture of levels within the individual classes.

“All boxers will first have an assessment to see how far along they are with the disease and for me to get a better understanding of their unique needs,” said Kelly. “Also, this lets me see their balance and fall risk. Then, they are put into a class, where we work on stretches and mobility.”

Currently, C3 Fitness offers three classes for boxers. Most of the classes meet two times a week, but there are options for classes to meet three times a week. Levels three and four are mainly for the more advanced Parkinson’s boxers. Kelly requests each of the levels three and four boxers to have a corner-man attend with them. The corner-man is usually a caregiver, spouse or relative that provides the boxer hands-on help with the workouts.

“For any exercise, I can help modify it for the individual boxer,” said Kelly. “All classes are open to people within all ages and stages. Parkinson’s is a disease that affects people who are in their 20s, with early on-sets to people who are in their 80s. I’ve had a boxer who has been in a wheelchair for 20 years.”

For all levels, Kelly has volunteer assistance in each class. The volunteers help with tasks, such as passing out water and helping with gloves. Also, a volunteer’s job includes timing circuits in the various workout rounds.

“I’m always looking for volunteers who are at least 18 years old,” said Kelly.

“To be a volunteer, they have to attend a volunteer training. I try to have at least two volunteers for every eight boxers.”

“Having the classes in a non-clinical setting allows for boxers to have fun and regain a sense of control,” said Kelly. “It gives them a chance to fight the disease back.”

How to Get Back into a Fitness Routine after You’ve Taken a Break

consistently and living a healthy lifestyle can be challenging in itself, but what’s even more challenging is jumping back on the exercise bandwagon after you’ve taken a break. At some point in our lives, we’ve all been there and had to take a break from exercising. I’m offering my tips on how to get back into it! Follow my techniques and allow yourself some grace time and you’ll be back to feeling great in the gym.

In August 2017, I suffered from some second degree burns on my right leg. I had to wear big bandages for a few weeks and could not get the burn sweaty whatsoever. This forced me to take some time off from exercising to allow my skin to heal. I’ll be completely honest with you, and tell you how hard this break was for me. Working out is my form of therapy, and I had to accept a break.

When I was cleared to work out again, I wanted to just jump back into the gym and pick up where I left off. Um, no Madison, that cannot happen. Do not assume you can do everything you did before the break. You’ve got to ease back into a fitness routine to prevent yourself from being injured or getting discouraged.

1. Start off small. Start with walks around the neighborhood or on the treadmill. See how you feel after your walk and gradually increase the amount of time you walk or jog. After my burn, I started back by walking my dogs slowly around the neighborhood. I actually enjoyed slowing down and looking at my surroundings for once!

2. Add in low-impact weight training. Slowly add in strength training to your weekly fitness plan. This can be 1-2 times a week to start and then eventually increasing to every other day. Make sure your strength training is low-impact and you don’t overdo it with burpees galore. Look up low-impact strength training tips online or attend a Barre or Pilates class at your local gym. I started back with upper- body at-home workouts and Pilates classes at the gym.

3. Stretch tons after your workout. Take a yoga class after you work out or stretch for at least 15 minutes after your workout. Since you’ve taken a break, your body is more likely to get stiff or injured. Stretch your muscles while they are warm and you’ll thank yourself later.

4. Plan your week out ahead of time. I like to plan my workouts each week to keep me on track. After taking a break from exercising, this is even more important, because you need to make sure you’re easing back into it and not just jumping into workouts because your body is feeling great. Planning ahead of time, and even a month at a time, can help. Seeing your progress and how far you have come is great motivation.

5. Give yourself a break! This is probably the most important tip of them all. Allowing yourself the grace period to ease back into working out does not mean giving up the second it gets hard. Instead, listen to your body. Are you incredibly sore and cannot do a planned workout because you worked out too hard the day before? Then take a break that day and walk in your neighborhood or head to the gym to do the elliptical.

Don’t give up, but don’t be so hard on yourself that you start to hate working out!

Simple Summer Lemon Cream Cheese Cupcakes

BY SARA WILES Key Lime Pie—one of my favorites! Classically simple, yet so refreshing for the sizzling summer months. Not to mention, this is a classic crowd pleaser! With only a few ingredients and only a mixing bowl, this recipe will be prepared on a constant rotation in your household. Give yourself some time, though, to thoroughly let the pie cool—there’s nothing worse than a warm key lime pie.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CUPCAKES… 1 box white cake mix 1 /3 cup vegetable oil ½ cup fresh lemon juice Zest of 2 lemons 1 cup sour cream 3 eggs FOR THE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING… 8-ounce cream cheese, at room temperature ½ cup butter, softened 2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice 3-5 cups powdered sugarDirections

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cupcake pan with liners.

2. Sift cake mix into a large bowl. Add oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, sour cream and eggs. Stir until smooth.

3. Fill cupcake liners ¾ full and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool.

4. For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add vanilla, lemon juice, and 2 cups powdered sugar.

Continue to add powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency.
