Yes, another school year is on the books, and everyone can enjoy a little break from the school routine. Home-made ice cream, catching lightning bugs and vacations await!

Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing fathers, grandfathers and father- figures out there! Dads have come such a long way and are more involved than ever in the routine care of their kids. That is such a wonderful thing and gives children a strong foundation! Way to go, dads!

Congratulations to all the high school and college graduates!

Our family has one graduating from law school—way to go, Jonathan! So proud of you, but go study! The bar awaits, and I have no doubt you will pass it with ease! And then I have two daughters heading back to school. Briana will start an online program to become a family nurse practitioner and Morgan will be heading back to Greenville to enroll in their Occupational Therapy graduate program. We made a trip the week before my surgery to look at housing options for her. It was fun to reacquaint ourselves with the area and reminisce about their undergraduate time there. The school has really made some nice improvements in the short time we’ve been away. Go Pirates!

Studies show that the first five years of life are a time of rapid brain development—a critical, once-only window of opportunity for developing reasoning, self-control, and other skills that are essential for success in school and later in life.

For one-third of Forsyth County’s children under age 5, these precious years are threatened by the constant stress and pressures of living in poverty—which lead to emotional, behavioral, health, and learning problems. Too many of our youngest children are stranded on the far side of opportunities that could help them thrive.

Family Services and its community partners are closing the opportunity gap, so that more preschoolers, like Ellie, will have access to opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential. For example: • Our Forsyth County School Readiness Project is training teachers of 3- and 4-year-olds in classroom management methods that support a child’s ability to concentrate and develop socialemotional skills.

• Through our Universal Pre-K Initiative, we are establishing a plan to support a community-wide effort to close the opportunity gap and improve outcomes for our youngest children.

• Collaboration with four other leading agencies has created a virtual organization, called STRONG@HOME, which is providing a more effective system for assisting families with young children to reach their full potential.

Ellie benefited from enrollment in our Head Start and Early Head Start programs, which also connected her parents to resources that helped them set goals and placed them on a self-sufficient path. With a stronger family life and a solid developmental foundation, Ellie was ready to apply her skills and abilities to succeed in school—and in life.

At Family Services, we provide high-quality programs that help Forsyth County families resolve crises, protect victims of family violence, and prepare preschool children to succeed in school. Yet, the future of our community is dependent upon reaching beyond the 8,700 families we serve each year to enable all children and families to reach their full potential. been a good year for Dr. Nickolas Kephart! A successful practice that’s now been renamed, remodeled, and rebranded!

These changes assure patients—both old and new alike—that this dental office is committed to meeting the needs of the community by staying on top of technology and the latest innovations in dental care.

A New Name Dr. Kephart has changed the name of his practice from Kephart Dental to Ardmore Dentistry. “Ardmore Dentistry reflects the historical area in which our practice is based,” said Dr. Kephart. “The Ardmore area is a central, convenient area of Winston-Salem, and by renaming our practice to reflect the location, we help confirm the convenience of visiting our practice.”

“Creating a space that is calming was important,” said Dr. Kephart. “But equally important was my desire to pay homage to Winston-Salem and the rich heritage of our community. As an amateur photographer, I love to take photographs around Winston-Salem, and many of the photos on display are pictures I took. Patients can expect to see new images each time they visit! I love to change the pictures out on a regular basis.”

“More importantly,” he added, “our treatment rooms are designed with the patient in mind. Our dental equipment has all been updated to the newest, most up-to-date technology! We provide our patients with comfortable chairs so they can relax during their cleaning or other treatments.” Dr. Kephart shared, “In addition to the added space, we made sure all corridors and entryways were wheelchair accessible.”

COACHING WINNERS IN LIFE When I used to coach in youth recreation leagues, I wanted to win, but mostly I wanted to lift the kids up, making them feel good about themselves. I feel this is the most important thing when you’re working with children and young adults.

I was reminded of this after reading a passage from author Bob Goff’s book Love Does (Thomas Nelson Publishing, 2012) that says, “I used to think the words spoken about us describe who we are, but now I know they shape who we are.” This statement speaks the truth. Words have tremendous power, and when they’re spoken to us directly, they can have an equally tremendous effect on our lives.

I remember back when I first started teaching my son how to play tennis, and I coached him using this philosophy, at least until he started getting better. At that point, I reverted back to something kids used to do in my day, and I would tease him a little when he messed up. It was a good incentive, I thought at the time; the teasing was a gentle way I felt would help him to remember the right way to do it next time. What I began to notice, however, was when I praised him and lifted him up during the beginning lessons, he was improving at a much quicker rate, and when I started teasing him in the later lessons, his improvement came much slower.

The situation was similar to a story I wrote back in June of 2008 (Forsyth Family), about “Swimming Lessons” and the lifeguard who used accolades that helped his older brother to learn more eagerly how to swim. I recognize that’s how we all are, whether it’s in the office, on the playing field, or

in our homes. We all want to hear we did well, but in those times when we didn’t, we also want those gentle words of encouragement and guidance on how we can do it right the next time.

At that moment with my son, I realized I had to change my strategy, so when I saw him hit a really good shot I let him know it, and I watched the smile on his face grow as he began to get his confidence back. This is not to say that you can never say anything bad or negative, it’s just that I have learned, the more positive the feedback in whatever form, the better the results tend to be. This also includes enthusiastic facial expressions used when words are not spoken. It is very easy to forget this, after all, since as adults we’ve been on both sides, so it’s not unusual to fall back on things that were done to us. It’s our job, however, to show the right way and try to avoid the perils that we experienced. It’s not to protect our children and keep them from ever experiencing anything negative.

That will happen enough on its own in their life. It’s just taking the short time we have with them and filling them with enough positive energy about whatever we’re doing to be able to withstand and overcome the negative forces they’ll most assuredly come across later in life.

It’s important to mention this is not coddling. Instead, this is encouraging. When you think about the coaches in your past, it was the ones that were good to you that you remember the most. HOMEMADE WHITECASTLE BURGER This is the perfect recipe not only for the fathers in our life, but also their small kids.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

1½ lbs. ground chuck

1. Preheat oven to 400°F.

1 (4-Tablespoon) envelope onion soup mix

2. Hamburgers: Mix first 6 ingredients and press into an ungreased, 10- by 15-inch jelly roll pan.

1 egg

3. Prick with a fork.

½ teaspoon pepper

4. Bake for 10 minutes.

2 tablespoons water

5. Drain off juices (if there’s a lot of excess) and allow to cool.

� cup breadcrumbs 24 small square dinner rolls

6. Cut into 24 squares.

7. Place squares onto dinner rolls.

8. Combine mustard and ketchup and spread onto rolls.

While the familiar family burger recipe is one that most of us quickly turn to, it would be lovely to provide some new recipes for fathers, either to try out or enjoy. When it comes to most fathers, and their families, for that matter, few would pass on a new burger recipe to try out. Curious about how to surprise the father in your life with a new burger recipe? 1. Mix meat, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, and pepper.

1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon black pepper 4 ounces cream cheese, softened ½ teaspoon dried ancho chile powder ½ teaspoon ground cumin 1 Tablespoon dried onion flakes 1-2 Tablespoons minced jalapeño pepper, seeded

2. Shape the mixture into 12 thin patties, each about 4 inches in diameter.

3. Mix the cream cheese, ancho chili powder, cumin, dried onion, and minced jalapeño.

4. Top 6 patties with the cheese mixture, spreading it to within ½-inch of the edge (if the mixture is difficult to spread, try heating in the microwave for15 seconds).

5. Cover each patty with one of the remaining 6 patties, sealing the edges well.

6. Broil or grill the patties (4 inches from the heat), turning only once if possible, until preferred doneness and cheese is melted, about 10 to 15 minutes.

VERY VEGGIE BURGERS For those fathers who do not eat meat, try this version of the traditional veggie burger for a new recipe!

4 Tablespoons hickory barbecue sauce

1. Stir together barbecue sauce and molasses. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, mash beans.

Stir in 3 tablespoons of the barbecue mixture (reserving remaining for brushing) and remaining ingredients—rice through egg white. Form into four 6-oz. patties.

1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained 2 cups cooked brown rice 1 Tablespoon oat bran 2 Tablespoons onions, finely chopped 1 Tablespoon finely chopped canned beets 1 teaspoon beet juice 1 teaspoon chili powder ¼ teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 Tablespoon pickled jalapeño pepper, chopped 1 egg white, add more if needed (to bind)

3. Heat olive oil in a cast iron or non-stick skillet over medium.

4. Grill burgers for 2 minutes on one side. Turn and brush with remaining barbecue/ molasses mixture.

5. Top with Monterey Jack and grill for another 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Q: I want to be excited about this coming summer.

However, I worry that this summer will be a repeat of last year. My kids slept most of the day, played video games all night, and raided the kitchen at all hours. I want my kids to enjoy this summer while keeping some sort of routine. What can I do to help my family?

Concerned Mom

A: Summer is a great time to enjoy down time together

as a family. With longer days and no homework, families can enjoy life at a slower pace. However, while kids are counting down the days to the end of school, parents may feel a wave of anxiety. Whether you work inside or outside the home, thinking about what to do with kids when school is out can be stressful. Less structure during this time of the year is what makes the season more fun. Yet, less structure can add to your stress. During the summer, it often feels like the family routine takes a vacation, too. Getting kids in bed at a decent time, or keeping them from grazing in the kitchen all day long, can feel like a battle. Here are some tips to keep a routine.

Be intentional. Think about what you want the summer to be like. What did you dislike about last summer? How can you change things this year? What did you enjoy about last summer? How can you make sure those things happen again this year? Think about these questions and make a plan for what you want to happen this summer.

Create a family summer routine. For families at home or with older kids alone during the summer, creating a schedule can be helpful. Some families need an hour-byhour schedule while others need a more general schedule for the day. You may include the following times in your family’s daily routine: when to wake up, meals, snacks,

computer/phone/video-game time, free time, non-screen play time, chores and bedtime. Writing down a routine helps keep everyone on track each day.

Involve the entire family. Have a family meeting to discuss the summer schedule. Get kids involved in how the day should be and what should happen when. Kids are more likely to follow a routine they help to create. Kids love to be involved and can even help write down the schedule you create together.

Keep it fun. A summer routine does not have to be a straitjacket for you and your family. Develop a routine that is realistic and allows you to add structure to your summer.

This will ensure your family has the most fun. Make sure to schedule in fun time together as a part of your family routine. One great way to plan for fun is to create a summer “bucket list.” These activities may include having a waterballoon fight, camping out in the backyard, fishing or playing in the sprinklers. Talk as a family to make a list of must-do activities for this summer.

Working together as a family to plan the summer will help this time to be as fun for you as it is for your kids. Enjoy this time together.

INTRODUCING CHILDREN TO HORSEBACK RIDING Parents who are interested in introducing their children to horseback riding, or even trying it for themselves, should call Legacy Saddlebreds to schedule an evaluation lesson. “Children as young as three years old can take a lesson,” said Jeanine.

“We offer a very low-cost evaluation experience to gauge the rider’s experience and confidence on the horse…moreover, it’s a great way to find out if the rider even likes horseback riding!”

The evaluation lesson is great for families who aren’t sure they are ready for a commitment. Legacy Saddlebreds also offers lessons without long-term contracts. “We work very hard to accommodate various schedules, including other extracurricular activities. We teach every day of the week and have both indoor and outdoor training facilities.”

BREAKING THE MYTH: HORSEBACK RIDING IS AFFORDABLE Horseback riding isn’t expensive; in fact, it’s quite affordable.

Jeanine explained, “Families can equate the cost to what they may pay for soccer, piano lessons, or gymnastics. All students need to get started is a pair of boots,” she continued. “We supply everything else! Horseback riding only needs to be expensive if you’re purchasing your own equipment or, obviously, the horse.” But with a property that houses 85 horses, half of which are school horses, that’s an individual choice. One shouldn’t let it hold them back if they truly want to experience horseback riding.

riding is one of those experiences that can take many forms. It’s a stressreliever. It’s a hobby. It’s competitive. It’s exercise. Best of all—it’s a wonderful family activity, and appropriate for any age.

They accumulate credits which can be used to pay for lessons, riding competitions, etc. “The Ambassador program has been a great opportunity that enhances the overall experience of horseback riding.”

research is there; parents and teachers see it first-hand. “Summer Brain Drain”—children losing months of learning over the summer.

We can all agree that we don’t want our children to lose the learning they’ve gained, but isn’t there a way to stem summer brain drain without stealing the joys of summer for our children? I think there is, and the key is staying engaged. In addition to overnight camps, here are a few suggestions I have found to help keep your children’s brains engaged over the summer.

Play and play together! Open-ended play engages creative and problemsolving areas of the brain—for example, building forts, creating new games, building with blocks or Legos, painting and drawing, etc. Creative play also provides invaluable settings for social interaction and growth for older children when playing together.

For elementary-age children, board and card games are of great interest and provide fun avenues to engage the brain. Some of my family’s favorites include Pay Day, Math Dice, Monopoly, Crazy 8’s and Phase 10.

Read, read, and read! Whether your child is an accomplished reader, just beginning to read, or still learning the sounds of the alphabet, reading aloud to or with your child is one of the best activities for keeping your child’s brain engaged. For trips or those with limited time for reading aloud, audio books are wonderful, too.

The Five Finger Test. If your child is already reading, it is important that you help them choose material that they can read without help. This will help frustration and discouragement with reading. The “Five Finger Test” is an easy test to see if a book is at the right reading level for your child.

Have your child read any page aloud.

When they come to a word that they don’t know the meaning of or have a lot of difficulties pronouncing, they put up one finger, stopping if they get to five.

0–1 finger up means this will be an easy read.

2–3 fingers up mean that this will be just about right to read independently.

4–5 fingers up mean that this is likely too difficult and might be a good book for mom or dad to read aloud.

Make learning real! Applying learning to real life engages children to use their knowledge and skills in new ways. Cooking, for example, may require reading a recipe, measuring ingredients, multiplying quantities to make larger portions. Shopping may require budgeting, arithmetic, working with money. Planning a family trip may require map reading, planning, budgeting, researching sites and events.

Taking trips is an excellent way also to make learning real for children. We are fortunate here in Forsyth County to have so many resources for fun day trips.

From touring Old Salem to visiting one of the many area museums, a fun and brain-engaging day is easy to plan.

Have a plan, even if it’s a loose one!

Summer time is certainly a time to relax and have some fun, and some unstructured time is important. Deciding on, and keeping to, a relaxed but predictable summer schedule, however, helps to accommodate brain-engaging activities and ensure that your children continue to get the important sleep that they need.

Chores are not a bad thing!

Like schedules, the routine and responsibilities that children have at home during the school year often drift away during the summer. Having ageappropriate expectations for the work of the home, whether making the bed, doing dishes, feeding the dog, etc., helps children stay engaged and gives them a way to make real contributions to the family.

Don’t forget to write! Writing letters and/or postcards can be fun and engaging for children, especially when they are receiving them, too. You may try arranging to have family or friends write your child letters over the summer, encouraging your child to reply.

Including a self-addressed, stamped envelope and stationary makes this even easier for your child to engage in.

So, relax, have some fun, but stay engaged!

Friday, April 21st, more than 300 guests gathered at the Old Salem Visitors’ Center for the 13th-annual Cheers! A Toast to Children’s Health. The event raised over $84,000 for Brenner Children’s Hospital of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Guests enjoyed wine tastings from vineyards in North Carolina and across the world, as well as a varied array of food prepared by local restaurants, caterers, and specialty-food companies. Numerous restaurants, breweries and sponsors contributed donations, services, and their time, to provide a memorable evening.

Summer Food Safety for Families

time is here! It’s time for picnics by the pool.

This is also the time of year when food poisoning incidents are on the rise. Every year 48 million, or 1 in 6, people will have some form of food poisoning. Coincidence?

Probably not. A little prudent picnic prep can mean the difference between rushing to the pool and running to the bathroom.

Food Poisoning happens when we consume foods or beverages that are contaminated with bacteria, parasites, or viruses. The most common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramps, fever, and chills. Illness usually occurs 20 minutes to three days after consumption.

Some cases have occurred up to 6 weeks after consumption.

Its onset is sudden or acute and, generally, lasts a short time. Most healthy people will recover on their own. However, food poisoning can be harmful, even fatal for those who are elderly, have compromised immune systems, or are under the age of five. Small children are at an increased risk of food poisoning and related health complications, because their immune system is still developing. They also produce less of the stomach acid that kills harmful bacteria.

These harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites can be found in the following foods:* • E. Coli – Beef and vegetable row-crops; • Salmonella – Seeded vegetables, fruit, chicken, beef, pork, and sprouts; • Campylobacter – Dairy and chicken;

By knowing how to avoid food contamination, you could avoid this altogether.

The CDC and FDA has compiled a list of the top five most common causes of contamination:† 1. Food was allowed to sit at room temperature. Either it was not kept hot enough or cold enough to stop bacteria from growing. Example, thawing food on the counter (use the fridge) or not throwing away bags of food left in a hot car.

2. Food was from an unsafe food source. Examples include roadside vendors or picking fruit or veggies yourself.

3. Food was not cooked thoroughly, using a food thermometer.

4. Food was prepared by someone with poor personal hygiene, or food was not cleaned properly.

Now back to your Summer Fun. Here are a few food safety tips for your outing:‡ Food Prep – Just as you would at home, wash your hands before preparing foods. Keep all prep surfaces clean with soap and water. Use a separate cutting board and utensils for meats versus other foods. Rinse all produce well. Use a stiff brush or scrubby and water to clean fruits and veggies with a tough outer layer (ex. melons), and remove the top few layers of leaves from leafy veggies (e.g., lettuce). Avoid fruit with broken skin, as that is a bacterial entry point.

Food Separation – Zip-lock all foods, but be sure to double-bag meats to prevent the juices from contaminating the cooler. Never place cooked meat back onto the plate where it sat raw. Never use marinade on cooked meat.

Grill with Skill – Germs are killed during cooking. Take along your meat thermometer. Cooking time will vary, based on your meat choices. Optimum internal cook temperatures are as follows: • Roasts, steaks, chops, and other solid cuts of meat (beef, veal, pork, and lamb), 145°F (63°C) at a minimum, and until the juices run clear—let it rest 3 minutes before eating; • Ground meats (beef, veal, pork, or lamb), 160°F (71°C) at a minimum and until it’s no longer pink;

• Listeria – Fruit and dairy.

• Ground chicken or turkey, 165°F (74°C);

Keep it Cool – Travel with coolers in an air-conditioned vehicle. Avoid placing coolers in the hot trunk. At your function, store the coolers in a shaded location and check the ice frequently. Cold food should be served cold and hot food should be hot. Bacteria thrives in lukewarm foods (between 40°F and 140°F).

Keep perishables in an ice-packed cooler at about 40°F, and drinks in a separate cooler. Perishables will stay colder longer in a cooler that is opened less frequently.

Time Out, Throw it Out – Watch the clock once food is served. If temps outside are below 90°F, food should be okay for up to an hour. After that, store it in the coolers or throw it out. with the Bethabara Concert Band

BEGINNING

on Thursday, June 8th, the Bethabara Concert Band will kick off its Summer Night Concert Series at 7:00 pm. in the Historic Bethabara Park pavilion.

“Summer Nights,” the Bethabara Band Concerts and Family Evenings, are a unique musical experience designed to please all members of the family. In addition to great music performed by members of the Bethabara Concert Band, the evenings are filled with fun activities, such as hay wagon rides, children’s colonial games, two-bit ($.25) ice cream cones, Dino’s NY Hot Dogs, and more. Concertgoers can expect to hear selections of music from writers, performers, musicals and movies, including Disney, Lee Greenwood, Chicago, Grease, Guns n’ Roses, the Beach Boys, the Best of Broadway and much, much more. All concerts and activities (excluding food) are free to the public.

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy the summer of music.

The season ends with two special concerts in October and November.

On October 12th, the Band will host “Dark in the Park,” a Halloween concert with a family twist.

Expect special guests, wagon rides through lit jacko-lanterns, ghost stories, crafts, and more Halloween delights. This year, Bethabara will be adding a special haunted walk to the Bethabara Graveyard to close out the evening’s festivities.

The Bethabara Concert Band began in the early 1980s, when John and Mildred Cline, founders of the Bethabara Concert Band, made a series of calls and sent a letter to gather potential band members. The Band was formally established in April 1986, and gave its first performance inside the Palisade Fort at Historic Bethabara Park in September 1986.

it or not, summer is right around the corner. With school letting out and months of long days ahead, the time to get your child enrolled in fun summer activities is now! The YMCA has fantastic options for rising first-graders through rising eighth-graders, but don’t wait too long to register, because these programs are popular!

“Our programs focus on the total child and engage campers physically, mentally, emotionally and socially,” said Executive Director for the YMCA Child Care Services Branch, Roderick Howard. “Campers get a chance to engage with their peers and be led by role models for ten weeks of the summer. Campers engage in things from group games, arts and crafts, songs, chats, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), to swimming and more. For our kindergarten–5th grade camp, we offer half- and full-day options. We also operate two preschool camps for campers who are one to four years of age, but have not started kindergarten yet. These preschool programs are run at the William G. White YMCA and the Jerry Long YMCA.” It can be hard to keep your children focused on learning exercises throughout the summer months, but many teachers encourage reading, writing and educational opportunities to keep little minds developing outside the classroom. The YMCA has created programs that allow children to learn while having fun! “Summer Learning Academies are camps that run five to six weeks and really focus on struggling learners who need that extra push (academically) during the summer months,” said Howard. “Campers focus on reading and math skills, as well as STEM activities. The summer academies are run out of local schools in the county and are led by YMCA staff and certified teachers from the local schools. These academies also include an enrichment component, including games, chants and songs. This program is free, but students need school recommendation for this program.”

ntergenerational storytelling and creative making are happening every day in The Prop Shop at Kaleideum Downtown (formerly the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem), a brand-new makerspace set in the backstage of a theatre.

COME BY TO MAKE A STORY OF YOUR OWN! The Prop Shop was made possible in part by a $150,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. In addition, The Prop Shop received funding from the WinstonSalem Foundation, the Cannon Foundation, the Corning Foundation, John and Anna Hanes, and the Sam N. Carter and Pauline H. Carter Fund.

The Prop Shop features a 1,000 square-foot space set in the “backstage” of a theatre. Within this space, visitors gather to create, invent, tinker, explore, and discover. Using real tools and materials, visitors design and create their own puppets, costumes, set pieces, and props. Programming facilitated

by The Prop Shop Manager and Teaching Artists focuses on children ages 4–12 and their caregivers; however, the space also includes a theatre-themed toddler area with a small

has come to the attention of many interested citizens that there have been some new local governmental projects in process over the past several months. These projects are a direct result of public safety initiations that were passed in 2014.

Up until this point, police officers have had to drive from their respective districts to downtown Winston-Salem to report for duty. After reporting, they then traveled back to their districts to patrol the streets and complete their duties as officers of the law.

This method has been irksome and economically illogical for the Public Safety Committee as a whole. Changes are being made to the Piedmont Triad law enforcement structure in an attempt to improve efficiency. A bond referendum approved and voted for by the North Carolina public was passed in 2014. This bond allowed 31 million dollars to be contributed to public safety.

Barry D. Rountree, Winston-Salem’s Chief of Police since 2013, the Mayor, and the city council decided to use the money to decentralize patrol headquarters.

The solution Barry D. Rountree, Mayor Allen Joines, and the City Council have come to is as follows: to establish a police station in each of the three districts. District 1’s station will be located on North Point Boulevard; the District 2 station is open and operational on Waughtown Street; and, finally, the District 3 station is in the last stage of construction on the corner of Somerset Drive near South Stratford Road. Authorities state that the building is drawing to a close on all fronts and the public safety units will be relocating shortly.

The mission the new structures hope to accomplish does not end with the obvious added convenience for the serving officers. Captain Chris Lowder, who will be holding an authority role in the District 3 station, says that he is “excited about this new opportunity.”

crime prevention, and problem-solving,” Captain Lowder remarked. He has confidence that the citizens of the Triad will be comforted to see that these law enforcement branches are now their neighbors, commercially and residentially. Lowder looks forward to improved relations and connections between the population and their respective district stations, now that they have become more physically accessible.

District three, near South Stratford Rd., will include 88 personnel, including a captain, lieutenants, sergeants, a street-crimes unit, a district investigator, and an administrative assistant. This building will become the 24/7 home base for the District 3 officers; it will be the location where they will report for work and be cleared by their supervisor. Captain Lowder will serve as the commander of the District 3 Police Station. He will allocate resources aimed toward problem-solving initiatives, oversee the District patrol operations, as well as manage the supervisors and officers assigned to the District. The Captain is excited to reorganize the public safety system in District 3 as it transitions from the downtown location to a more local setting.

Captain Lowder shows his enthusiasm about being more visible and present by welcoming the community to visit their new stations and to become even more involved in the work of law enforcement. Finally, he thanks the countless members of the city population for voting for the bond package that made this all possible. He also commends the Mayor, the City Council, and several key city officials for their guidance in making the decentralization idea a reality.

North Carolina authorities and the community in the Triad are intent on kindling a sense of security and police availability for citizens. The tireless efforts of the Public Safety Committee, City Council, and Mayor Allen Joines are evidence of a commitment to benefitting the community for generations to come.

With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 33-year teaching career, literacy expertise and a passion for creating joyful readers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

Immigration Facts: • In 2015, the four most common birthplaces for first-generation children were Mexico (twenty-seven percent), India (six percent), China (five percent), and the Philippines (five percent).

• In 2015, approximately 21 percent of people ages five and older in the U.S. population reported speaking a language other than English at home. Spanish was by far the most common language (62 percent).

MANGO, ABUELA, AND ME This 2016 Pura Belpré Award duo presents an endearing story of the longing and difficulties many multigenerational, immigrant families face as they seek to bridge linguistic and cultural divides. Young Mia speaks English and her grandmother, who leaves “her sunny house with parrots and palm trees” to live with Mia’s family in America, speaks Spanish. Mia seeks creative ways to teach Abuela English, and in return, Mia learns Spanish, but it is not sufficient for all of the stories they wish to share. Mia comes up with a “perfecto” idea to get a feathered friend, Mango, to ease Abuela’s homesickness and also to provide a topic for grand conversations! With each new word, their bond deepens.

“Now, when Abuela and I are lying next to each other in bed, our mouths are full of things to say.” This heartwarming tale of patience and determination beautifully weaves together two generations, two languages, and two cultures.

A PIECE OF HOME The 2017 recipient of the Ezra Jack Keats Award is a tender tale about the challenges a young Korean boy, Hee Jun, and his family face as they adapt to life in America. Told with sensitivity and compassion, Watts shares the emotional impact of leaving behind all that is familiar and the struggle to make new friends, learn a new language, and find his way. In Korea, Hee Jun “was ordinary.” But in West Virginia, he looks different from his classmates and when he tries to speak English, “the words feel like stones in his mouth.”

He gradually settles into his new life—one new word and one new friend at a time. When a classmate invites him over after school, Hee Jun recognizes a flower in the yard from Korea— mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon). He asks to take a shoot to his grandmother so she can plant a “piece of home” in their new garden. This realistic portrayal of the highs and lows of beginning anew in an unfamiliar world is a must-read!

Extension Activities: Photography: The mugunghwa flower in A Piece of Home provides both familiarity and beauty in the lives of Hee Jun and his grandmother. With supervision and permission, take pictures of flowers in your yard, neighborhood, or a nearby park with a smartphone or camera. Use watercolors, crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc. and paint/draw your favorite photographed flower. If you have access to technology (and a little assistance), use a free app like Pic Collage Kids to design a marvelous work of art. Ask for help to import pictures from your photo library and then you are ready to create an amazing collage. Whatever artistic route you choose, be sure to share your finished product with someone special.

Dual Language: In Mango, Abula, and Me, Mia looks for clever ways to help Abuela learn English so they can better communicate. Of course, in the process, Mia learns some Spanish too! One idea Mia has is to label objects in the house with vocabulary flashcards. In like fashion, select five items in your home you routinely see and write each one in English on a card. Use freetranslation.com to learn the word in a second language and then write it on the corresponding card and place it on the object. For example, if you select Spanish as the second language and “bathtub” as one of the objects, write “bathtub” and “bañera” on a card and place it beside the bathtub. Set a goal of five new vocabulary words a month and by the end of a year, you will know 60 new words. Contextualizing the vocabulary by placing the flashcards with the objects you frequently see will enable you to be a duallanguage user in no time!

Teaching Language, Gently!

“Mommy, I goed with you!” Your sweet child, by speaking this sentence, is learning the art of language through listening and practice. As parents, we tend to pay closer attention when our preschool child attempts to transition from the first action word (verb) learned into some tense. This is a “teachable moment” to repeat, “Would you like to go with me to the grocery store?”

In offering a verbal response, you can help your child start to practice forming the present, past, and future tenses, as well as learn how to use vocabulary in context.

Children who learn to grasp the rules of language early in life can transfer this understanding when writing becomes an applied skill. While the English language is full of rules and can be rather confusing at times, gentle reminders in a variety of forms are the building blocks to a confident child.

THE SKILL OF LISTENING Children are keen listeners. Their world evolves from sound by listening to the expression or pronunciation of sentences.

How quickly will some children repeat surprising words, or attempt to use new vocabulary? Language surrounds our children. While they will practice themselves, as parents, we can help by providing examples of language through educational opportunities.

Books: Use your child’s favorite book as a teaching tool. Ask her to locate key words by pointing to a particular action word on the page. Young children will become excited to be given the responsibility to find words. It may be the first step to help a child feel like a reader.

Visual words: There are wonderful word games available for children to independently create original sentences. Some games have pictures on one side and the word underneath to encourage print enrichment.

Games: Through the experience of having a turn to move a character token (piece) in a board game, children can also

learn about directions, language, and words. There are wonderful games available. One exception for preschool children is “Super Why ABC Letter Game,” which encourages children to learn their letters, the skill of rhyming, and practice reading comprehension.

Dramatic Play or Imagination: It’s a wonderful moment to listen to children create dialogue during sessions of dramatic play. We can glean much from the word choices, creative story plots, and how children interact with other children in the exchange of storytelling. You may discover that a word used yesterday was incorporated into today’s play session. Keep talking about words and explain definitions. Important words can be learned at any age. Never be afraid a five-syllable word is too much for a three- or four-year-old to learn. Pronounce the word in syllables, and have your child repeat, to model it correctly.

Reading Aloud or Audiobooks: A nightly reading of several books or chapters will develop into a wonderful bedtime routine.

Preschool teachers will assist parents to focus on particular skills, which emphasize story and sentence structure, especially locating the capital letter and end note, commas, and key sight vocabulary. As children reach elementary school, other areas, such as defining vocabulary and comprehending story components, will be the emphasis.

Parents can take a break from reading and play an audiobook, whether on the drive to or from school, or while preparing dinner. The narrator, who may include entertaining voices for the main characters, will make the book an anticipatory event for everyone in the family.

Learning about the rules of language can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Young children are eager to learn; yet, by the time they reach elementary school, correcting grammar mistakes may become a sensitive topic, and alternative approaches can be tried. With phonics instruction occurring in the classroom, the next step will be a new emphasis—writing complete sentences and building towards paragraphs. With an educational foundation in language, children will be glad you took the time to listen and be a helpful first teacher!

Celebrating, Tinkering, Curiosity, and Creative Thinking

summer doesn’t have to include the words, “I’m bored”; instead, take the phrases “go and play” and “think outside the box” to a new level. Whether it is a daily or weekly challenge, elementary-aged children can engage in a variety of mostly self-sufficient activities that will encourage thought and planning, creative thinking and tweaking. While the following suggestions are just a starting point, they may encourage a new love of aerodynamics or engineering, chemistry or biology. And, if your child has never heard of the previous disciplines, this summer may be “science-full!”

Creations Require an Inventor’s Box Ask your child, “What could you make with the following supplies: String, craft sticks, paperclips, a marble, a plastic bottle, a cardboard box, and clothes pins?” With a variety of unique supplies, your child is bound to create something wonderful. If your child enjoys tinkering, take the “game” one step further by providing her with an old tackle box to create an “inventor’s box.”

Leonardo da Vinci and Flight Boys and girls are often fascinated by watching objects fly, spin, and twirl across long distances. Before he or she tinkers with original creative flying machines made from paper plates or plastic bottles, cardboard or tongue depressors, allow them to learn about Leonardo da Vinci, who became interested in flying through bird watching. As a result, he studied the proportions of the bird wing and began sketching birds in flight. While he never successfully flew his “bird,” he left behind thousands of pages of research for future inventors.

Two wonderful books to read are, Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists: Leonardo da Vinci, by Mike Venezia and The Magic Tree House Merlin Missions: Sunday with a Mad Genius, by Mary Pope Osborne.

Gustave Eiffel and His Tower Even young children have heard of the Eiffel tower; however, before the 1889 World’s Fair, a structure made from iron was regarded with uncertainty. Building with the goal of supporting weight and reaching a desirable height is a wonderful project for young children. Encourage a start with blocks to learn about support and balance before children begin constructing a skyscraper using toothpicks and mini-marshmallows. There are wonderful books to support the interest in learning about skyscrapers.

Louis Pasteur and Chemistry The chemist and microbiologist, Louis Pasteur, is well known for his understanding of pasteurizing milk; yet, his discoveries expand to the very nature of how our immune system is affected by the nature of diseases. While Pasteur is one name to research, encourage your child to write a prediction before witnessing what occurs when safe chemical compounds are combined. Children can rate the experiment, and possibly list the procedures. You might even want to try some experiments a second time.

• BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR: Two wonderful experiments to try with young children are “hot-ice hand warmer” and the “baking soda-powered boat.” Ask your child to pay close attention to the portions of baking soda and vinegar. They should be able to notice the greater reaction when larger amounts of baking soda are added.

• OOBLECK TO SLIME: Children will be amazed at how differently each recipe differs in composition and ability.

Hours will be spent in play. Just make sure you child understands the rules of play, cleanup and how materials should be stored.

While your librarian will be happy to refer your child to wonderful book titles on these subjects, at home, families can watch unique experiments conducted by “The King of Random” on the YouTube channel.

John Muir and Nature Referenced as a “Father of the National Parks,” John Muir advocated for the awareness of nature’s gifts and its protection. Similar to Muir, who took long walks to admire the outdoor beauty, children, too, can take sketch pads and journals and become familiar with their surroundings.

There are actually any number of activities, from starting a rock collection or the study of trees, to following the flow of a shallow creek, which can interest children. While books can expand knowledge about our environment, observation, whether written or communicated, is one of the best teachers!

Parent and Child Contracts

I’m

going to let you in on a little secret. Ready? Since the dawn of time, every parent has flown by the seat of his or her pants. Just when you think you have a handle on this child guidance thing, something changes, someone gets hormones or a pimple, or some other major life crisis occurs. We all lose sleep, wondering if we’re doing this right. This is when you may love having a Family Contract in place.

Contract Objectives Family contracts are written agreements between you and your child, outlining specific expectations and the consequences if they are not met. Your child knows exactly what is expected and is empowered to make appropriate choices. It eliminates surprises and negotiations post facto. You no longer need to nag, grit your teeth or lose your cool. It’s as easy as, “So, I see you have chosen to…what are the consequences?” and then, “What might you do differently next time?” Doesn’t that sound awesome? It really is.

Contract Goals Contracts vary, based on your child’s age and the specific goal.

Here are a few examples of contract goals for elementary school age children and higher: • Homework • Organization • Chores & Allowance • Bedtime • Overnights, Parties, and Resposibility for Guests • Self-care Routines • Cell Phone and Internet Use • Driving • Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco • Extracurricular • Pet Care • Adhering to Family Values (honesty, integrity etc.)

Preparing Your Contract Be prepared to create the contract together. Ideally, parents will have a few non-negotiables (ex. drugs, curfew, bedtimes), but will be willing to compromise in some areas, too. It is important that the child feel that he or she has some input also. The contract has four parts (as outlined by Bert Welch for Souixland CARES).

1. Topic or “Goal” 2. Expectations, Rules or Details 3. Responsibilities 4. Consequences Upon completion, read it aloud. Once all parties agree, make a copy for each person plus one. Sign and date each copy and place one in a central location, such as the fridge or kitchen drawer. Remember, once the child chooses to break the rule or responsibility, it is not up for negotiation. It is time for the established consequence (that they’ve previously agreed to in writing).

Some of the terms you may choose to use in a parent / child contract (sample for a young teen) may include: HOMEWORK & CURFEW: • Homework must be done before going out on weekdays; you must be in bed by 9 pm.

• Can go out on weekends if homework can be completed on Sundays; in bed by 11 pm.

• RESPONSIBILITY: Must maintain a “C” average or better. Better is preferred PHONE & TECHNOLOGY CURFEW: • Weekdays no calls or technology after 9 pm • Weekends no calls or technology after 11 pm • RESPONSIBILITY: You are responsible for your friends knowing the family rules. You must inform parents if extra phone time is needed for school assignments.

• CONSEQUENCES: Next night’s curfew will be 1 hour earlier. Repeated infractions will require technology and phone to be left in the kitchen at bedtime for one week.

CHORES: • All your stuff cleaned out of common areas by bedtime.

• Clear and clean up after dinner.

• Clean your room and laundry by sundown on Sundays.

• Help around the house when asked.

• RESPONSIBILITY: Do chores without being told.

• CONSEQUENCES: More chores will be added to this list.

Your ability to follow the contract during this contract period with a good attitude will determine the freedoms and privileges granted in the next contract period.

Parenting is a wild ride, wouldn’t it be nice to have some things established? Try family contracts, no lawyer or notary required. Or…you could keep living life in a blender without a top. You do have a choice.

What’s Going on Beneath Your Feet?!

Do I Have Moisture Problems?

Moisture in a crawl space comes from two sources—the ground and the outdoor air. Exposed earth contributes to a lot of water vapor into the crawl space air because the earth is damp. In most climates where there are dirt crawl spaces, you can never dry the earth, and the invisible stream of water vapor from the exposed earth goes on forever. Groundwater seepage is another cause for moisture in a crawl space. It enters under the footing, between the footing and the walls, through block walls, and through cracks in poured walls.

Air is another very efficient way to move water. Air, including humid air, moves easily in and out of spaces and brings its moisture content with it. When air is heated or cooled, its relative humidity changes. Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. The relative humidity of air goes up 2.2% for every degree we cool it. When we bring warm, humid air into a cool crawl space, the air is cooled, and the relative humidity goes up. High relative humidity causes condensation and water vapor in the crawl space, causing rot, mold and energy loss.

Do I Have MOLD? Mold has a purpose. Its purpose is to break down or eat dead organic matter. “Organic” means it was a material that once was living, such as wood. So when something is dead and wet, mold (or other fungi) grows on it and eats it. Since mold spores are everywhere, and our building materials are made from organic materials, this factor cannot be controlled. The only one that we can control in our home is the moisture. Mold needs 60% relative humidity to grow. Mold likes processed organic fibers the best—it will grow on paper and cardboard first. After that it will grow on fiberboard, then plywood, and finally framing lumber. Drywall and fiberglass insulation both have paper in them, so mold will absolutely grow on these items. A crawl-space specialist can test the moisture in your crawl space to see if it is a breeding ground for mold.

Is My Crawl Space Energy Efficient?

When fiberglass floor insulation gets damp from water vapor in a crawl space, it begins to sag. This is called “bearding.” It gets heavy and droops down, making an air space between it and the floor. At that point, it has almost no thermal benefit at all. When fiberglass insulation is a little damp, it loses a whole lot of its insulation value. Insulation should always be installed against the air-boundary surface of the house. In a healthy, properly functioning crawl space, that surface is the crawl space walls and floor. The wood floor system above is full of gaps, joints, and chases for wires, pipes and ducts—so it’s the wrong place to insulate in a crawl space.

Is My Floor System Structurally Sound?

Sagging floors are not only a nuisance, they can leave you wondering how much longer the floor will be able to support the weight of everything on it! Sometimes existing columns are spaced too far apart when the home is built. In this instance, the beam or girder can become overloaded and sag between the columns—and then, so does the floor above it. The floor joists and girders may also weaken if there is mold and wood rot from excessive moisture in the crawl space. This will cause the floor above the crawl space to become bouncy, soft, and it may begin to sag. Finally, weak soil can cause an existing column that is supporting the floor system to settle. If you are experiencing sloping floors, cracks above doors and windows, gaps between floor/ceiling and interior walls, or doors and windows that stick, your floor system may need additional support.

Taking the Stress Out of Traveling with Kids

summer time! And with summertime come trips and family vacations. Spending long hours traveling in a car, on a plane, or another mode of transportation can be tiring on both parents and children. But, there are tricks to keeping kids engaged and not asking the typical, “Are we there yet?”

Keep the Activities Coming: Pack a travel bag full of games, puzzles, coloring books, stickers, and more to keep your kids occupied. If you are traveling for several hours, try handing out a new item once per hour. Take the travel bag a step further and create a small bag for each child. This bag can be a pencil pouch or something of a similar size and include items that are interesting to that child.

Lastly, play family games along the way.

Have printable road bingo or a road trip scavenger hunt. Another classic family game is the license plates game, where everyone competes to see how many different license plates they can find. When traveling by airplane, it can be hard to pack all of these items into your carry-on.

Instead, try downloading kid-friendly apps with games and videos on your iPhone or iPad. This way, your children will stay engaged in an activity other than running up and down the aisles of the plane.

Pack a Snack Bag without Sweets: Kids will get hungry going from place to place.

Be sure to have their favorite treats to ease their hunger and avoid the hangry mood (hungry plus angry). However, remember one thing: don’t include sweets. There is nothing worse than being in a public tourist attraction with a child having a sugar rush. Include in the bag savory treats like cheese cubes, pretzels, fruit, and veggies. Don’t forget water to drink!

Start a Travel Journal: Put an educational spin on your trip and have your kids start a travel journal. This travel journal can include drawings, lists, and stories about the interesting places you visit, food you eat, and the various activities you do. Also, collect postcards from the different places.

With these postcards, you can either write a message on the back and mail them to yourself or include them in the journal.

Another way to engage your kids in the travel journal is to give them a camera to take pictures. This child-friendly camera will allow kids to capture their favorite sites and what interests them. Types of cameras can include disposable or Polaroid.

Have a First-Aid Kit and a Clean-up Kit: When you are traveling with kids, anything can happen. Be prepared with a First-Aid kit and a clean-up kit for spills. In the FirstAid kit, include band aids, gauze pads, a digital thermometer, cold pack, sunscreen, bug spray, aloe vera, saline solution, antibacterial wipes, medicine, and anything else you would normally include.

For the clean-up kit, put in antibacterial wipes, paper towels, small garbage bags, zip-lock bags, and extra clothing and diapers.

Plan Ahead: Plan your trip and make your reservations well in advance. Along with hotel and flight reservations, buy tickets for attractions ahead of time. In addition, plan out a schedule for your trip, including the various activities for each day. Check out the websites for the places you’ll visit, see the nearby restaurants, and other sites to help your trip go smoothly. However, one of the most important things to remember is to stay flexible! If you have one attraction planned for a day and end up doing something else, don’t worry!

Don’t plan too much or too little. The ultimate goal of the trip is to have fun and make memories with your family. Also, have a plan of what you’re going to pack in regard to clothes for your kids. Have a to-do list and schedule of what needs to be done in the final days leading up to your trip.

Bring Your Child’s Must-need Items: Don’t forget to bring your child’s favorite stuffed animal, toy, or blanket—anything they normally carry around and need to have at home. These items will help kids feel safe and comfortable while exploring new surroundings. Plus, it might help prevent some emotional break-downs.

Traveling with kids can sometimes be stressful. However, use the tips above to ease that stress and create lasting family memories.

Say “Please” and “Thank you.” Don’t talk with your mouth full.

Hold the door open for that lady.

Ask the new neighbor to come play with you.

You’re learning to be nice to the people around you. But it’s really important to share and use good manners with your family, too. Take some time to think about how you act at home: Do you obey your teachers but disobey Mom? Do you use good manners at a restaurant, but eat like a pig at home?

Do you gladly help a neighbor, but whine when Dad asks for your help?

Is it easier to share toys with a friend than with your brother or sister?

Do you ever yell or scream or pout when it’s time for bed?

The Bible tells us that love is patient and kind. It says we should forgive others. It says that whatever we do, we should do it with our whole heart like we were doing it for Jesus. (1 Cor. 13:4; Eph. 4:32; Col. 3:23) Wow! Think how happy you are when Mom lets you have the first cookie, fresh out of the oven. Think how proud you are when Dad says, “You did a great job!” What are some other ways that Mom and Dad show you that they love you?

Jesus said, “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.” (Luke 6:31) That’s your “homework” every day—even during summer vacation. Treat your family the way you want them to treat you. You can be polite, or you can be rude. You can say you’re sorry when you blow it, or you can run away and be mad. You can put your toys where they belong, or you can hide them under the bed. Which actions show love?

Listen. Obey. Be kind. Help. Forgive. Share. “Homework” isn’t always easy, but it’s always important. When it feels too hard to do the right thing, you can say a simple prayer:

“Dear Jesus, Help me to love my family like you love me. Amen.”

SHALOM IN MY HOME

a mother of three teenagers, a caregiver to an aging mom, and a small- business owner is not easy! Most days I feel like one of those plate spinners that you see at the circus, running around wildly from one twirling dish to another, trying to keep them all in motion.

This stressful routine often leaves me on my knees, praying for peace, asking God for some “Shalom in my home”!

I realized the other day that I might be praying for the wrong thing. That’s because, when I pray for peace, I am usually really asking God to change the things outside of me that are causing me stress. But, a stress-free life is really just a fantasy, isn’t it? There will always be bills to pay, missing school work, sick kids, broken cars, aging parents, deadlines at work, world crises, and arguments with spouses to deal with. It’s these things that cause us to long for heaven.

Instead, when I pray for peace, I should be asking for peace within. In the Gospels, Jesus often used the Hebrew greeting, “Shalom aleichem (shah-lohm a-LAY-khem),” which translates to “Peace be unto you” or “Peace be with you.”

Now, certainly, Jesus knew that the folks he spoke to would face lots of tough times down the road. So, I must believe that the kind of peace he was talking about was the peace that resides in our hearts and is available to us no matter what’s happening in our world.

The verses that always come to mind when I think about that kind of serenity are these from Philippians 4, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

You’ll notice those verses do not say God will answer your requests by giving you whatever you ask for. However, we are promised a gift that will serve us much better in the long run—the gift of peace. The kind of peace that endures the weather and protects us from whatever comes our way.

A Vacation Interrupted Imagine,

for a moment, that you are a pastor. You love your work and your congregation. You also love your family and are looking forward to your upcoming vacation when you’ll be able to spend a whole week, uninterrupted, with your wife and kids.

The hotel is booked, the car is packed and, as soon as you finish preaching Sunday morning, you and the family head to the beach for some much-needed R&R. But, early Monday morning you get a phone call.

Sadly, an elderly member of your congregation passed away yesterday, and the family wants you to officiate her funeral...tomorrow. What do you do? If you leave, your family will be disappointed, and you will miss time with them that you can never get back. If you stay, your congregation might think you are neglecting them and not doing your job.

This imagined scenario is all too real for many pastors. As the summer months are approaching, it’s a good time to ask if your church has a plan in place that allows your pastor some time away with his or her family which, no matter what happens, will be respected and protected. At the Threshold

When one thinks of being “at the threshold,” it’s both a literal and metaphorical statement. For local Christian artists, Jonathan Riddle, Hannah Riddle, Chris Graham, Tommy Tippit, and Paula Sitterlee—it’s both. These five talented individuals are known as “At The Threshold,” and, as the name implies, they are on the precipice of something great! Jonathan (lead vocals and guitar—“JR,”) and Chris (guitar—“CG”) shared a bit of what is going on with the band.

DH: How long has At The Threshold been together?

JR: We have known each other for most of our lives, but started playing music together officially as a group in 2013.

DH: For those who haven’t heard your music, please describe your style.

JR: Musically, I would say our style is bluesy, passionate worship music. Many of the songs are piano-driven and feature strong vocal harmonies. As far as the actual content of the songs [is concerned], I like to refer to our style as “evangelistic worship.” Our purpose is to go before the Lord in the real intimacy of worship and challenge others to do the same.

DH: Do you play original music?

JR: Yes, we write our own music, inspired by, and based on, what the Lord has been doing in each of us individually. We believe the Bible should be the foundation of everything we sing, so we utilize a lot of the Scripture in our lyrics as well.

DH: Tell us about your albums.

JR: We released our first album, which was selftitled, in 2014, followed by our Christmas EP, The Consolation, later that year. We’re currently working on two new projects, a full-length worship album called Alabaster and a unique 5-song EP called Hallelujah: A Psalms Project.

DH: What is Alabaster going to be like?

JR: Alabaster is a worship album, 11 original songs that have been a direct result of a few years of the Lord working in us and growing us up. The name “Alabaster” comes from Matthew 26:7, which says, “There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head.” It represents the desire to pour out everything that is most valuable to us and put it at the feet of Jesus in worship.

DH: What makes Hallelujah: A Psalms Project different?

CG: Besides the sound, one of the things we’ve done differently is how we came up with the musical accompaniment. It is an attempt to honor the Scripture through direct musical translation. Unlike English, each Hebrew letter has a numerical representation. I worked with a Jewish rabbi and used a tool called the Gemetria to translate the original Hebrew into numbers. We then translated those numbers into music and orchestrated that translation. The musical notes represent the mathematical equivalent to the Hebrew language and the lyrics are directly pulled from Psalms 146–150. It was a lengthy exercise, but a great challenge and we are thrilled to be able to share it on this 5-song EP. DH: That sounds fascinating! When and how will people be able to get a copy of Alabaster and Hallelujah: A Psalms Project?

JR: Throughout June, we have a Kickstarter campaign to help finance the album (psalmsmusicproject.com).

Jesus Glows you seen this? Does anyone else find this interesting?

you ever examined a piece of art? Ever studied the work and admired the details?

We’ve got to wonder what these different artists were trying to communicate with a glowing Jesus, because people don’t glow under normal circumstances. Truth be told, there is the post-tanning-bed glow, a mother-to-be or bride-to-be glow; but generally, people do not shine, as artists have captured Jesus in so many works of art.

Earlier this year I got to visit the Art Institute of Chicago. As an art enthusiast, I was amazed! So much talent, history, beauty and absurdity in one building.

On a personal level, I gravitate toward the Impressionist movement, with its nature scenes, sunrises, and sunsets. It’s interesting, though, to consider the many significant works depicting Jesus.

As Christians, we affirm that Jesus was fully human and fully God. He was part of the general people of humanity, as well as altogether set-apart, because he was also divine. This strange claim of a dual nature, a God-man, is difficult to explain and capture with words. We Christ-followers make the claim, but often struggle to articulate any justification. Sometimes there are no words!

There is the laughing Jesus, crying Jesus, praying Jesus, distraught-in-the-garden Jesus; there is Jesus feeding thousands, Jesus teaching children, Jesus sleeping on a boat, Jesus walking on water; there is Jesus betrayed, Jesus crucified, Jesus resurrected and lots of sweet baby Jesus figures.

Most of these pictures have something in common. Jesus glows. Have you ever noticed that before? Jesus seems always to have a certain glow or shine about him. He looks a little brighter than the folks in the artwork alongside him. Have

As a redeemed and redeeming community, we too share in that light. So I must ask: when do you glow? When can you identify the light and life of God in Christ so powerfully in your own life that you glow with joy or peace or kindness?

If you are a part of a local church, when does your church glow? When do we most represent or reflect to the community a hope of new life, of resurrection?

Just as importantly: when do we acknowledge the light in others? Friends, God continues at work in our world—in our everyday ordinary lives—to transform life into kingdom life. Wherever God is at work, there glows a powerful witness to God’s presence. May we be faithful to shine that light, and by doing so, may we bring out the colors of God’s world for those who live in darkness!

My Grace-Full Life

Our Heavenly Father

From

the moment we’re born, we spend our first years of life depending on our parents for everything, including every physical and emotional need. By the time we’re old enough to appreciate that our parents are human, and therefore, likely to make mistakes, we have put them up on a pedestal. We forget that we didn’t come with how-to manuals, and mistakes are an inevitable part of life. Whether you had amazing parents who showered you with love and support; or emotionally, sometimes physically absent ones; no one is perfect and therefore, every human parent is flawed. However, there is good news. For those who have accepted Christ as their Savior, we have a Heavenly Father who loves us beyond measure and who will never, ever, let us down. Let’s consider some ways in which God the Father is the perfect parent.

God the Father, Our Creator Starting at the beginning, we must acknowledge that God created us. Moreover, He created us specifically in His own image. Genesis 1:26a states, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.’” At this point in creation, God had already made the earth, sky, water, and all the animals, birds, fish, and plants. He not only created us in His image, but He gave mankind a superior role over everything else He created.

God the Father, Who Knows Us There are many instances in the Bible that refer to us as God’s creation, whom He knows perfectly, even better than we know ourselves. The first is in Psalm 139:1314, when we’re reminded that God knit us together in our mothers’ wombs. He created us from the inside out, and knows every detail! Another example of His intimate knowledge of us is found in Romans 9:21, with the beautiful illustration that compares our relationship to that of the Potter and the clay. God, as the Potter, made us unique.

“Unique in every way”—that includes every detail, even ones we don’t know about ourselves! Jesus says in Luke 12:7 that God knows us so well, He even knows the number of hairs we have on our head! I’m sure I don’t know that number, and it’s highly unlikely you do, either!

Finally, when we read Romans 8:27–37, we learn several important points about how well God the Father knows us…. He knows our hearts and minds. There’s nothing we can think or feel that escapes His notice. And, my favorite part of this passage—He not only created us, but He knew us and had a plan for us before we were born!

God the Father, Who Disciplines Us

parenting, albeit a hard one. It’s a parent’s obligation to discipline their children, correct them, and help guide them. To that end, God does not shirk His responsibilities to us as His children. Proverbs 3:12 says, “For whom the Lord loves, He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.” This is reiterated in Hebrews 12:6, which says, “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

When punishment is served in love, it may be painful, but it’s purposeful. God our Father uses it as a tool to keep our focus on Him, and to try to prevent us from painful consequences.

God allows everything to happen, though, including consequences of our actions. It doesn’t mean He doesn’t care; it reiterates that some life lessons are hard.

God the Father, Who Loves Us The previous verses already establish that God the Father punishes us because He loves us, but He loves us so much, that He lavishes His love upon us. This verb, “to lavish” is an important term. It means “to bestow something in generous or extravagant quantities.”

Ephesians 1:7-8 states, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight,” and in 1 John 3:1a we are encouraged to “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”

God has poured out His love on His children in immeasurable quantities, the greatest of which was the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus, as a willing sacrifice, paid our sin debt, and to that end, God himself demonstrated His great love by allowing Jesus to pay the price.

To that end, that doesn’t mean that God the Father will “spoil” His children to their own ways; He loves us enough at times to say, “No,” and at other times, He says, “Wait.” His timing is always perfect, and His plans far exceed our own. Jeremiah 29:11 is a favorite verse for this truth, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

When you’re in need of a parent—one who always keeps His promises… who loves unconditionally…who will never, ever, let you down, look no further than your Heavenly Father. Rest in the promises that are made throughout the Bible and trust in the dependability of your Heavenly Father.

Vacation Bible School is a time-honored tradition that dates back to 1894. Every summer, children look forward to this week-long opportunity, and countless hours are spent by church volunteers to create fun and enriching experiences for children that are rooted in Biblical principles. IMPACT YADKIN: Lending a Hand in the Community

Throughout

the year, Impact Yadkin lives out its mission of helping people in the community and building their lives physically, spiritually, and emotionally. This local program is a part of Magnify Ministries, which originated with a vision in 2009, with the first Impact Yadkin in 2011. Every June, volunteers gather and provide assistance to residences of Yadkin County. However, pastor and founder of Impact Yadkin, Chris Hauser, says none of the projects are possible without the help of their wonderful volunteers.

“Impact Yadkin couldn’t happen at all without our volunteers.

They give financially, physically, and spiritually to bettering our community. Also, they give a time commitment for the ‘impacts’ [projects]. Most of our volunteers are middle, high school, and college students, and a few adults. I could tell story after story about how volunteering in their community has made an impact on their lives,” says Hauser.

These stories are created during the Impact Yadkin projects during the summer. For one week, volunteers spend time during the days working on local home improvement projects, such as building decks, painting, and making homes handicapped-accessible for those struggling in Yadkin County. At night, the group worships and has Bible study, while staying overnight in a local school. The group of volunteers is composed of students, plus three adults, two men and one woman. Already 82 projects have been scheduled for this year’s Impact Yadkin from June 17th to 24th.

“Each volunteer has to give $200. This money is used for building supplies and other materials needed for the projects. The week is a great time for everyone participating to give back to the community and grow in many ways. Since starting the impacts, the number of volunteers has grown each year. This year, we are looking at 900 volunteers. This group is made up of people from all church denominations and all ages,” explains Hauser.

According to Hauser, Impact Yadkin has received support from the local volunteer fire department and the Red Cross. The Red Cross has donated smoke detectors for the various projects.

“Anyone can apply. Before confirming any projects, we always ask ourselves, ‘Can we do the job?’ This question determines the projects for the summer’s impact. Once a person sends in an application, we go out to the home and assess the job. We determine if it is something we can do and put together. The process is then started, and the job is added to the week. Usually, people send in applications throughout the year,” states Hauser.

Impact Yadkin is just one of the many programs by Magnify Ministries. The organization completes ongoing projects and events throughout the year, including food drives, home repair, and providing assistance in paying a citizen’s bills.

“Another fun event we do is a Vacation Bible School called ‘Party in the Parks.’” We partner with Yadkin County Schools and the YMCA and host a Vacation Bible School for kids’ kindergarten through fifth grade.

There are crafts, activities, and lunch is provided. About 800 kids attend each year. Kids from all different backgrounds. It is open to anyone who wants to join us,” says Hauser.

When it comes to volunteering, Hauser reflects on the value this concept can give people.

“Not only are you giving back to the community, you are building up each other, passing on love, and providing outreach to those in need. With Impact Yadkin, volunteers are experiencing all of that and growing spiritually, whether they are Christian or not.

Also, they are realizing the need in Yadkin County and personally seeing it. Sometimes our younger volunteers will help out a peer whose family is struggling. They might not have known that this friend or person from school was in need of help. Because of the value volunteering gives them, we have kids come back year after year,” Hauser summed up.

It’s a GRAND Life -

Know Your Limits

I

recently read an article titled, “15 Things Mothers-In-Law Need to Stop Doing,” by Linda Beth. While a number of the items pertain mainly to the relationship between the motherin-law and her daughter/son-in-law, several apply to the grandkids, as well.

I am fortunate to have a great relationship with my sons-in-law (or they are really good actors). However, in reading the article, I had to admit to being guilty of things Beth claims are no-nos. A few of the 15 pertain directly to our input as grandparents.

For example, number three on Beth’s list is “trying to name your grandchildren.” I admit to suggesting names, but the ultimate decision was theirs alone. I did put my opinion in, whether in words or by facial expression, which I admit I had no right to do, when they mentioned a name I really didn’t like. Fortunately, I love all my grandchildren’s names. I know there are children who refuse to tell anyone the names they’ve chosen for their own children to avoid hearing people’s comments. Questioning their decision, shaking your head or making a face every time the name is mentioned will definitely put a dent in the relationship you have with them.

Number five on Beth’s list of things to stop doing is “disguising advice in questions.” Uninvited advice to your daughter/son is one thing. They, after all, were raised by you and will take it, ignore it or tell you to “M.Y.O.B.” as they see fit. Your in-law is a different matter, especially when the thinly disguised criticism comes in the form of a question and involves the raising of their children. Unless there is something that is potentially harmful to your grandchild, what the child is wearing, his or her schedule, what he or she eats, etc. is not yours to concern yourself with. In any case, starting a conversation with “don’t you think,” “are you sure,” “wouldn’t it be,” is not going to illicit the response you are hoping for.

Numbers six, seven and eight go together and, though obvious, always bear repeating. Number six Beth calls “rescuing your grandchild.” I don’t like this term, but what she means by it is a good point. If the child wants something and the parents want him/her to do chores, or

the like, to earn it, that should be the way it is handled. If the grandparent steps in and buys the item, it negates the lesson the parents are teaching. Instead of working towards a goal, the child learns to bypass the parents and get “rescued” by the grandparents.

Number seven is “breaking the parents’ rules.” Beth understands that as grandparents we will occasionally spoil our grandkids, but constantly ignoring the rules they put in place is not acceptable. Allowing them to stay up way past their bedtimes, giving them sugary treats before nap or bedtime, letting them watch too much TV or play hours of video games may not seem like a big deal to us, but the effects of lack of sleep grumpiness and other issues from breaking their rules are felt by the parents and definitely not appreciated.

This leads to number eight in Beth’s list of things to stop doing which is “making parents the bad guys.” Loving our grandchildren doesn’t mean giving into them when it goes against the parents’ wishes. Saying, “I would give you that candy bar, but your mommy said I couldn’t,” does not make you a good grandparent or win you points with the parents.

Explaining why they can’t have candy without bringing their parents into the reason is all that needs to be said.

Beth lists other things she wishes in-laws/parents would stop doing if they want to have a good relationship with their adult children and their significant others. Those may come to light in a later article. For now, read the above again, take it to heart or with a grain of salt, but if any of them ring true with you, Beth’s advice is, “please, please, please, if you’re doing any of the things on this list -just stop!”

A Memorable

year in June, my family, extended and immediate, gets together for a family reunion. At this reunion, there is a lot of family fellowship, food, and fun. This year, our reunion is a very special one.

It is the 50th-anniversary of our family reunion. Fifty years ago, my family started coming together every summer to reconnect and spend time with one another. Throughout this past year, we have been planning many fun and new ideas to make this reunion very memorable. If your family is having a reunion, take a look at the ideas below for to how to plan a memorable event for all ages.

REUNION Start Planning Early: Once you know you’ll be having a reunion and the date, start planning all of the details for the event. Think about whether or not you want a theme, where the reunion will be held, the food, etc. When deciding on the event’s location, think about special places for your family. These places could be a member’s house or even a vacation destination. Try to plan at least a year out and involve other family members to help get things organized. Don’t forget about games, decorations, and favors. Also, if the reunion involves traveling to a destination or another member’s house, think about how you want to handle the travel arrangements and accommodations, as well.

Get the Word Out: You can’t have a family reunion without your family there. Once you know the date of the reunion, go ahead and send out “Save the Dates.” Also, you can include surveys or ideas for members to send back on what they would like in a family reunion. Then, closer to the event, about a month or so in advance, send out official invitations. Be creative and make the invitations special and unique to your family.

Food: There are a few different food options for a family reunion. First, you can have it catered and save some stress for family members. Another option would be to have a potluck, where members make their favorite family recipes. Always include desserts to end the event.

Take-Home Gifts: It is always nice to include a take-home gift for your family members.

These gifts don’t have to be big, and could be a bookmark, a T-shirt, or a small favor bag.

Want something bigger? Create a family tree or family cookbook. In the cookbook, add favorite family recipes, pictures, and stories. You could also create small scrapbooks for each family member.

Games and Activities: An important part of a family reunion is having games and activities for all ages. Depending on where your event is held, some games could be: relay games and races, scavenger hunts, board games, and family Olympics. Carnival games are also popular. For family Olympics, family members can compete in rounds of corn hole, bocce ball, Jenga, Twister, and more. Award medals to the winners. As for activities, craft projects are favorites among the various generations. Other ideas are: family bingo or trivia or a “Blast from the “Past, in which family members take trips to the old houses where the grandparents grew up, former schools, and other places down memory lane.

Let grandparents and/or kids share stories from the past or funny anecdotes about another family member. Lastly, create a family video with pictures and clips from the past years.

Collect these items while planning the reunion and show the finished product at the event.

Pictures: How many times are year do you see your extended family members? Use the time together to make memories and take tons of pictures. These photos can be pictures staged in a photo shoot, or candid snapshots. Display with your decorations the family reunion pictures throughout the years to see who has, or hasn’t, changed.

A family reunion is meant to be a memorable time, and planning for the event can be enjoyable. Be sure to get everyone’s input and make it special and unique to your family.

However, the most important part of a family reunion is to have a good time with your family members.

Summer Is For Reading and get him to sign your book. I’ve got to say, when I heard the details of the Bookmarks Summer Reading Program, I wanted to go back to school!

The program is open to any student, K–12, in North Carolina. Students receive a list of books and authors—many drawn from the writers of children’s and young adult books who will appear at the Bookmarks Festival from September 7th–10th. Every student who fulfills the requirements listed in the program booklet will receive a completion prize certificate that will enable him/her to choose a book from the Summer Reading Table at the September 9th Festival. Middle and high school students will also be entered into a competition for Bookmarks’ gift certificates and cash prizes up to $250.

Summer

reading. Those two words once filled me with both excitement and trepidation. “Summer” meant no school, long days tromping about in the woods (if it wasn’t raining), or playing Monopoly (if it was). But reading? That meant work—the same sort of work that summer was meant to spare us from. Summer reading didn’t mean pulling down my favorite Hardy Boys volume, with its worn pictorial cover, or even revisiting my battered paperback copies of Huckleberry Finn or The Hobbit. Summer reading meant a list prepared by a teacher with specific requirements, and the near certainty that the very book we would be expected to discuss on the first day of class would be the one I didn’t quite make it to.

How times have changed! The Bookmarks Summer Reading program takes out the trepidation and leaves nothing but the excitement. Imagine if, instead of being told exactly what to read, you could choose from dozens of books. Imagine having the chance to create a response to your favorite book in the form of a work of art, a video, a written response, or anything else you can create. Imagine having that response shared with thousands of book enthusiasts and fellow readers. Imagine if you could write a letter to the author of that book and then have a chance to hear that author speak in person. Imagine getting to shake the author’s hand and ask her a question

Bookmarks will hold events throughout the summer to keep young readers engaged and excited—these will include writing workshops, book discussions, a Saturday Art Jam with Art for Art’s Sake, film screenings, and more.

Student responses will be displayed during this year’s festival, so readers will have the chance to share their enthusiasm and thoughts with the entire community.

And, of course, with all those authors coming to the festival, students will have a chance to engage directly with the people who wrote the books they have loved reading.

When I was in school, I never met an author. I certainly never had the chance to write a letter to Mark Twain or J.R.R. Tolkien, and I never got a book signed by Franklin W. Dixon (granted, he didn’t actually exist, but you get the point). While I’m sure the children of Winston-Salem will spend plenty of time this summer on their bikes, or on the soccer field, or at the movies, I hope they will also spend some time in the pages of books. It will make for a wonderful summer, and I promise, there won’t be a test.

Sipping Smarter as a Family

Winston-Salem family has been named as the winners of the “My Glass is Why” Family Health Challenge with Novant Health and the American Heart Association!

As the American Heart Association’s “Life is Why” Sponsor, Novant Health is conducting quarterly health challenges to Forsyth County families. The My Glass is Why Family Health Challenge focused on families sipping smarter by increasing their water intake and reducing that of sugarsweetened beverages.

Jacob Peller and his family decided to drink more water after a long history of “soda headaches.” His father drinks carbonated water. Jacob’s brother drinks water before, during, and after running 5ks.

Each person in Jacob’s family drinks an average of 4–6 glasses per a day, depending on their respective physical activities.

Jacob drinks water because soda is not good for the type of activity he does.

“Since I started drinking less soda, my throat is not sore as often,” shares Jacob. “As a singer and performer, that is very important.”

As the My Glass is Why Family Health Challenge winner, the Peller family will receive free filtered water for one year to

support their healthy beverage choices.

An average woman needs about 11 cups of water—from all beverages and foods— each day, and the average man about 15.5 cups, according to 2004 recommendations from the Institute of Medicine.

“Water impacts your body’s health as a whole in many different ways,” said registered nurse and certified health coach Val Velte of Novant Health, Rowan Medical Center. “It regulates our body temperature, carries nutrients, lubricates our joints and protects our organs. If you aren’t drinking enough [water], it’s harder for your body to carry out these tasks.”

Replacing sugary drinks with low- and no-calorie beverages can also help to limit calories, which may aid in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Most Americans consume nearly 20 teaspoons of added sugars each day. That’s triple the recommended daily limit for women and double for men.

Sugar-sweetened beverages like soda and energy or sports drinks are the #1 source of added sugars in our diet. For an easy example: just one can of regular soda has about 150 calories and ten teaspoons of added sugar!

To start cutting back on sugary drinks: • replace some of your drinks with water.

• swap full-calorie soda with diet soda.

• reduce the amount of sugar in coffee and tea.

• add some plain or sparkling water to drinks to keep some of the flavor with less added sugars per serving.

To make water the easy and more appealing choice: • carry a refillable water bottle.

• add a splash of 100% fruit juice, or slices of cucumber, or berries for a boost of flavor.

• add a low-calorie sweetener to your water bottle.

• try seltzer, club soda or sparkling water if you crave a little fizz.

THE REWARDS OF SCREEN TIME

Do you give screen time as a reward in your house? Or is it something that your kids don’t use at all? Or is screen time something that is allowed whenever they want it? By “screen time,” I am referring to watching TV, using computers, X-Boxes, smartphones, and other electronic devices.

In our home, I’ve got one child who couldn’t care less about most electronic devices. She is ten, likes to watch TV, and will jump on the iPad every once in a while. Other than that, she isn’t very interested. My 7th-grade son, on the other hand, loves some X-Box, computer, and just about any other electronic games he can get his hands on. He could easily pass an entire day in the darkness of our basement while playing NBA 2K and Destiny. For this reason, screen time is a perfect tool for me to use as a reward to reinforce his positive behavior.

As a rule of thumb, my children are not allowed any electronic devices during the week unless they have a school assignment that needs to be completed on the computer. So, no iTouch, no X-Box, etc. Television is allowed after dinner and only if all homework is complete.

Neither of my kids has a phone, so this rule is fairly easy for them to abide by. They also both love to play outside and spend the majority of their afternoons with the neighborhood kids. In all honesty, if there are sports and homework after school, there isn’t much time left for electronics anyway.

On weekends, they both have screen-time privileges, and it works like this: Television is allowed at any time. They both usually watch when they wake up and maybe late in the day, but don’t

usually abuse the privilege, so we don’t have to put too many rules on it.

My daughter can use the iPad, computer, and iTouch pretty much at her own discretion. It is rare that she spends a lot of time on these things, so I don’t have any hard rules for her. (She has other fun activities that we use for positive reinforcement!)

As far as my son is concerned, we struggled at the beginning of the year with a lack of effort in academics. For this reason, screen time has been perfect leverage for him.

We get on the school website on Friday afternoon to check my son’s current grade averages and figure out how many hours he has earned for the weekend. We look at the five core subjects and his grades at that time. For each A or B, he earns an hour of screen time. For each C, it is neutral.

For each D of F, he loses an hour. So, if he had two A’s, one C, and two D’s, he would not earn any screen time. Since we have implemented this reward system, he has not let any of his grades slip below a C, which has made us all very happy!

Every family is different, and every child is different, so my idea may not work for your family, or you may need to tweak a few things here and there. With summer break just days ahead, I hope these suggestions help your family in monitoring screen-time habits as much as they have helped us.

Encourage your child to eat foods high in nutrition. When diets lack certain nutrients, the tissues in the mouth may have a more difficult time resisting infection. Even in children, this can contribute to gum disease which causes swelling, redness, and gums that bleed easily (severe gum disease can cause tooth loss in adults).

Practice proper dental hygiene. In addition to eating and drinking healthy, monitor that your child brushes her teeth correctly at least twice a day and visits the dentist for regular checkups.

Eat a variety of healthy foods. Help your child choose foods from the five major food groups (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins and dairy).

The website ChooseMyPlate.gov offers great tips and resources regarding a healthy diet.

Drink water. It is the best go-to drink because it lacks sugars and helps keep the body hydrated.

Limit the number of snacks your child eats. Focus on meals rather than snacking throughout the day. The mouth releases more saliva during a meal and the saliva helps wash the foods from the mouth and lessen the effect of the acids that can cause tooth decay.

St. Patrick’s Day Treats

Frozen Treats to Beat the Heat!

Help the kids stay cool this summer with these cool treats!

CHOCOLATE-DIPPED FROZEN BANANA POPS INGREDIENTS: 5 large bananas 10 wooden popsicle sticks 24 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips Assorted toppings of your choice: sprinkles, granola, nuts, etc.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Peel the bananas and cut them in half. Insert the wooden stick into the center of the cut side of the banana until it’s stable.

4. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the chocolate chips in 30-second increments, stirring each time until melted and smooth.

5. Remove the bananas from the freezer. Hold one banana stick over the bowl of melted chocolate and spoon the chocolate over the banana, turning it to cover it completely, letting the excess chocolate drip back into the bowl. Move quickly, as the chocolate will start to harden as it touches the frozen banana.

2. Place the skewered bananas on the lined baking sheet and freeze until firm, about 1 hour.

6. Quickly move the banana to one of the bowls of toppings and spoon the topping over the chocolate before it hardens, letting the excess topping fall back into the bowl. Place the banana back on the baking tray and repeat with each banana, using the topping of your choice.

3. Place your toppings onto a plate or shallow bowl and have them nearby, as the chocolate will harden quickly.

7. Serve immediately or refreeze in a Ziploc bag.

If serving them from the freezer, let them thaw 10 minutes before serving to soften.

FUDGE POPS INGREDIENTS: ¾ cup sugar

3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour 3 Tbsp. baking cocoa 4 cups milk

10 popsicle molds or 3-oz. Dixie cups 10 wooden popsicle sticks DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large saucepan, combine sugar, flour and cocoa.

Stir in milk gradually, until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly for two minutes or until thickened. Cool slightly.

2. Pour ¼ cup of the mixture into each mold or cup. Top with lids or insert popsicle sticks. If sticks are unstable in cups, cover cups with foil and then insert stick in center.

Freeze until set. May store in freezer for up to 3 months.

MELON POPS INGREDIENTS: Use the melon of your choice, or all three for great color, though the cantaloupe has the smoothest texture.

1 melon (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew)

4 Tbsp. lemon or lime juice per honeydew-sized melon Popsicle molds or 3-oz. Dixie cups, and popsicle sticks Sweetener, if your melon isn’t quite ripe DIRECTIONS: 1. Blend melon and lemon or lime juice in blender or food processor until smooth.

2. Pour into molds or cups and freeze for at least 4 hours.

If using Dixie cups, freeze without sticks until slushy or thick, then insert sticks and continue to freeze until solid.

circulating the room, shaking hands, and offering quick compliments to everyone she meets.

You may be thinking, “Wow, she’s a wonderful hostess!” (Secretly, she is actually comfortable spending time with this grouping of friends, which makes the gathering okay.) Around the room, there are many different personalities. There are couples quietly talking to each other, and circles of people engaging in animated conversation. With so much happening in the center of the room, it may be hard to notice one individual standing apart from the crowd. If this person delays responding to your greeting, it is not because she is shy; she, like the hostess, is an introvert. Surprised? We are all individuals with quirks: preferences to be social, or just to have quiet strength.

Torn in Two Directions For an introvert, accepting a social opportunity could be described as mentally preparing for a long workout.

She may enjoy communicating with intriguing people for a time; however, she doesn’t leave a social situation because she is tired or uncomfortable; instead, she feels as if her energy is depleted. Being a “social introvert” has challenges that many

cannot understand. The same questions arise. “How can social interaction make a person feel exhausted?” Or, “Why does she need to have time alone to feel better about socializing again?” Yes, from an outside perspective, it may be easy to see why introverts are labeled as “unsocial.”

Who is she?

The beautiful wallflower standing by herself could be one of the most fascinating and complicated individuals in the room. It is a compliment when she chooses to be among an intimate gathering of friends. If she didn’t mind the process of conversation, the small talk and the simple pleasantries in-between, a new acquaintance would find her mind fascinating, her topics of conversation unique, and her humor comical. She is not interested in talking about the weather; instead, she enjoys the banter of intellectual or heartfelt conversations.

Recharging Getting away from schedules to feel rejuvenated is something we can all understand. Introverts need time away to return to their true selves. Everyone has their own definition of what helps them

relax, such as watching a movie, walking the dog, running or swimming laps, or turning off technology. John Elliott writes, “I used to stress out because I felt bad saying ‘No’ to people; so, I would go do things I didn’t really want to do. I learned to say ‘No’ to people, and my relationships improved. I am now able to be completely transparent and just say, ‘Thanks for the invite, but I need my space right now.’ Most of the quality people in my life totally get it, and respect it.”

Everyone wants to be more than just a label. We all have some form of the introvert within our character. You may be an extrovert that loves being alone or an introvert that enjoys a lot of social interaction. While research has discovered four types of introverts—social, thinking, anxious, and restrained—not every individual meets a textbook definition. A large percentage of people are in the middle, between extrovert and introvert.

Thank goodness we all have quirky, unique, and one-of-a-kind personalities, and friends who are just as interesting!

A Look Inside

AMERICA’S NATIONAL TREASURES

We

all know them by name, the classic national treasures that reflect the history of America. But, do you know the history behind these famous landmarks and sites? From the Liberty Bell to Mount Rushmore, I’ll take a look inside some of the most popular national treasures in America.

The Liberty Bell – Known for its iconic crack, the Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The bell used to be referred to as the State House Bell, because its old location was the tower of the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. The Liberty Bell was created for the bell tower in 1751 by the Whitechapel Foundry in London. Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly, Isaac Norris, headed up the bell’s creation. However, a new bell had to be made after the first bell from London cracked during the first ring test. Metalworkers John Pass and John Stow soon developed the bell in Philadelphia.

The bell was rung to call lawmakers to their meetings and townspeople together for important news. It wasn’t until the 1830s that the Liberty Bell became a symbol of liberty.

When it comes to the Liberty Bell, there are two famous symbols located on it. First, the crack. There are different theories as to why the bell cracked, but many believe it occurred during the 1840s, after 90 years of use. However, the split you see in the bell today is actually a repair job. In 1846, Philadelphia decided to repair the crack in the bell for George Washington’s birthday.

Metal workers used a technique called “stop drilling” to widen the crack to prevent further spreading and to restore the bell’s tone. Sadly, this repair led to another crack and the Liberty Bell has not been rung since.

The second symbol is the bell’s inscription—“Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants thereof.” This verse comes from Leviticus 25:10 and was chosen by Norris to commemorate the 50th anniversary of William Penn’s 1701 Charter of Privileges. The Liberty Bell’s message was also used by abolitionists to end slavery.

The Statue of Liberty – “Lady Liberty,” one of the best-known landmarks of the New York skyline, was actually a gift to the United States from the people of France. It was dedicated as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy on October 28, 1886, and became a National Monument in 1924. The Statue of Liberty has a few key symbols associated with her, such as the torch, crown and face, the tablet and dates, and the chains. Lady Liberty’s torch was restored in 1986, and the original 1886 torch is located in an exhibit for all to see. The new torch is covered with 24k gold sheets. As for the crown and face, the iconic crown has seven rays, one for each of the seven continents, and her face is more than 8 feet tall. As for the monument’s tablet and dates, the 23-foot, seven-inchlong-tablet has the inscription “July IV MDCCLXXVI” (July 4, 1776). Lastly, Lady Liberty’s broken chains represent the cessation of oppression and tyranny.

When visiting the Statue of Liberty, there are two ways to climb inside the monument. First, you can either walk/climb the 215 steps from the lobby to the top of the pedestal, or you can take the elevator. From my own experience, there is nothing better than the view of New York, Ellis Island, and the surrounding areas from the top of the pedestal. Another way is to visit the monument’s crown. Access to the crown is only available with advance tickets. Tickets are also needed for the pedestal.

Mount Rushmore – Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln can be seen for miles throughout the Black Hills National Forest. These four presidential faces are visited by more than three million people annually in their home at Mount Rushmore. The mountain’s sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, chose these four presidents based on their important events and contributions to history. Borglum led over 400 workers in carving the monument, which they began in 1927 and completed in 1941. A total of 450,000 tons of rock had to be removed to create the heads. Borglum’s original plan was to show the presidents from the waist up. However, lack of funding stopped the carving after the faces were completed.

Today, Mount Rushmore is known as the “Shrine of Democracy.”

On July 4, 1930, a dedication ceremony was held for the head of George Washington. The remaining three presidents each had their dedication ceremonies between 1936 and 1939.

After Borglum’s death in 1941, his son took over the job and completed Mount Rushmore’s final details. It is known as a “Shrine of Democracy” because of Borglum’s intention for the monument was to promote the “continuance of the democraticrepublican form of government throughout the world.”

The Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, and Mount Rushmore are just a few of the many classic national treasures in America. The list of beautiful places can go on and on, and all are on my own personal list of places to visit.

On the Road with the Family Dog

BY LISA S.T. DOSS Not all situations require your four-legged friend to miss the adventure of a road trip or a family vacation. Before her tap-dancing feet anticipate the words, “Jump in,” here is a list of tips to encourage a wonderful excursion with the family dog.

1. CONTACT YOUR VET: If your dog has not received his or her latest vaccinations, it is important to schedule an appointment. Ask for a copy of your dog’s medical records, and have two or three copies, just in case it is requested.

TIP: Research a veterinarian clinic at your location, especially if they offer 24/7 emergency service. Along with your dog’s medical records, it would be wise to have all contact information on your phone.

TIP: Make sure the dog tag is clean, and her name and contact information is clearly visible; otherwise, order a new one.

2. PLAN YOUR ROUTE: In traveling with a dog, do not schedule an arrival time. Dogs will require ample space to take regular breaks and experience a new environment every four hours. A proper 30-minute walk will rejuvenate your body, as well. As you plan your travel route, take notice of pet-friendly attractions, as well as rest stops. This may be the vacation where you get to experience all the wonders of small and large towns and beautiful parks.

TIP: Checking the weather in advance will help you better prepare for conditions, especially rain. A wet dog traveling with passengers in one vehicle may not boost excitement levels. (Aren’t you glad you gave her a bath before leaving!)

3. CONSIDER SEATING AND COMFORT: If your dog is an avid seat passenger, you may want to consider alternative accommodations during long trips. For safety, dogs cannot sit on a person’s lap, especially the driver’s. You may want to offer the third row by removing the seats and adding a dog bed. Dogs will need the ability to sit and lie down and sleep in a safe location. Having her kennel along may provide comfort during the trip and at night.

TIP: Keep a small bag with your dog’s immediate needs close by, such as leash, water and bowl, treats, and poop bags.

TIP: Maintain your dog’s morning and feeding routines!

4. BOOK PET-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATIONS: There are a wide range of hotels that are petfriendly, and will declare it on their website.

In making your reservation, ask about pet policies and whether a fee is associated.

5. FAMILY EXCURSIONS REQUIRE DOG CARE: Planning a day to see the local sites, it is important to determine who will care for your dog while you are away. Most dogs will feel anxious in a new environment, and among strangers.

One solution is to schedule a day care or boarding service for the day. (If you cannot ask for a recommendation from a family or friend in the local area, contact the local veterinarian’s office.) Dog care often comes with wonderful, affordable packages such as additional walks, or a bath and nail care. Allowing your dog to receive professional care may ease the worry for everyone in the family.

PACKING FOR THE POOCH! Before you begin packing, consider two bags. One will require important, easy-to-reach essentials, while in the second are less important items.

• Pack the morning and evening meals in individual Ziploc bags. This will ensure you have just the right amount for each day while you are gone.

• Bowls. Yes, take the dog water dish and food bowl with you. It will be a form of comfort for your dog. Invest in a collapsible water and food bowl for the car. For frequent car riders, you’ll be glad you had the travel bowls.

• Treats!

• Leash (take two) • An absorbent pad, paper towels, or extra towels, and disposable bags for potential accidents • Dog pillow and a few favorite toys • Shampoo, dog towel, and brush • Pictures of your dog • Medical records • Medications! Stay on your schedule for heartworm prevention.

• Poop bags!

PREPARE THE FAMILY: Traveling with the family dog can be a wonderful experience for everyone in the family. Discuss in advance what the trip may entail, in terms of both positive and negative aspects, and especially the opportunity to spend quality time together. With the focus on sightseeing and walking, everyone will be much happier to have the family dog in step.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE: 1 Week to Study

You have packed away your graffitied notebook and stolen pen when the teacher mentions in an offhanded way (which the exuberant extroverts in the class will subconsciously block…see the next section), that there will be an Exam next Monday. Your heart gives a little jolt, and you hurry to scrawl the information on the back of your hand, before heading off for lunch.

IF YOU HAVE KEPT UP (If you take diligent notes and pay attention, but have neglected to study consistently): Make a study guide. Condensing your notes will solidify information in your brain. The simple exertion of writing out specific information will help it stick in your mind, instead of your trying hard to keep it there. Basically, like bringing an oxygen tank when scuba diving, instead of trying to hold your breath.

Keep it on your desk or pinned to your wall where you can continuously read over it.

Memorize dates and names. Since you have a week, you still have time to memorize the more slippery material. On the first day, write out all of the information in notecard form, concentrating on what you are writing. Don’t waste the opportunity to absorb information by watching TV while writing note cards.

Get together with someone who knows less than you do.

Because you pay attention, you have registered the way the teacher taught the information, but you may need a refresher.

Teaching another student is the perfect way to memorize, and memorize conceptually, not in a way that will evade you on test day.

IF YOU HAVEN’T KEPT UP: (If you doodle in class and stare at your crush instead of watching the educational video playing): Visit a professor to ask what they are looking for. Don’t worry about acting like you know more than you do; nine times out of ten, your teacher will know you have not been interested.

Chances are, your teacher has just finished writing up the test or exam and has the specific information fresh in their mind.

Make sure to take notes as they talk (I know you don’t have practice, but try anyway). They will usually divulge more precise information to you than they would to an entire class.

Find a classmate who knows more than you. Be bold and ask them to walk you through the parts you don’t understand; your grade hangs in the balance. At the end of the study session, ask them for a picture of their notes or better yet hand copy them down, this will cause your brain to register the content more firmly.

Substitute study time for Netflix or Instagram. It may have become a habit for you to spend 5 to 10 minutes each morning on Instagram and/or 20 minutes each night on Netflix. Instead, when you feel the urge to pull out your phone or laptop, grab your flashcards filled with bold terms from the textbook.

1 Day to Study Your teacher has been warning you for days that the test is coming up. However, with friend visits, Netflix, practice, dish night, and Netflix, the time tends to scream and run when you try and catch it. Now the Exam is in the morning and reality sets in. Your mouth is dry, your guts seem to think you have food poisoning, and you are trying as hard as you can not to sprint to study hall.

IF YOU HAVE KEPT UP: Read over your notes. This method is better than reading through the textbook because the information the teacher writes on the board is the information they see as most important and will, therefore, be more likely to appear on the test. Hopefully, you have underlined or highlighted sections the teacher seems partial to, or has even mentioned the possibility of the topic appearing on an exam.

Stay up late. They say get good sleep the day before a test (this is because the information you have learned has to have time to cement itself into your brain), but if you haven’t touched your books the information isn’t going to magically appear there by getting a good night’s sleep.

IF YOU HAVEN’T KEPT UP: Look up YouTube crash course videos. Since you don’t have good notes, it is acceptable to enter the YouTube arena.

This field is only to be used in case of emergency, because professors usually ask more specific questions about what they taught you. Simply type “Crash Course” followed by the subject in question. The Green brothers will show you a broad overview of the material you have missed in no time.

Ask if any of your classmates have made a study guide.

Once you get the study guide, copy it onto another piece of paper over and over and over again. After you have become familiar with it, give the paper to another person and ask them to test you. Write out the information you got wrong on note cards and start the process over again.

The Journey Contiunues, Part 5

I’m

writing this the week before my surgery and everything is about to get real, as if it hadn’t already! I sure have enjoyed this time of recuperation from my last chemo. Food is tasting a little more normal to me now; I have a head full of peach fuzz, and that’s a big yippee!

I’ve not mentioned this before, but my PET scan in January revealed a spot on my thyroid, and a biopsy confirmed it was cancer.

I’m having my thyroid removed at the same time, so that was good news to be able to combine those. The doctors say thyroid cancer is very slow-growing, and that was definitely good news!

I’ve had more than my fill of doctor appointments in the last two weeks and have now met with the radiation oncologist, plastic surgeon, endocrine surgeon, along with my pre-op appointments. I have six weeks of radiation to look forward to, but side effects seem mild compared to chemo. Breast reconstruction will be a separate surgery several months from now, but at least I understand my options better.

Needless to say, I will be glad to get this all behind me, after anticipating it for several months now. I’m in great hands with an amazing medical team, God and family with me every step of the way! I thank everyone for their prayers and well-wishes along this journey!

You’re probably tired of hearing me say it, but the love and care has been humbling and overwhelming. Two of my dearest friends, Kristin and Sandy, really overwhelmed me with filling my empty flower pots with the most beautiful flowers. Our church does a “Worship without Walls” once a year, and I was their project. So, on a cold and rainy Sunday morning, they showed up on my doorstep with smiles on their faces, an armful of flowers and the most yummy breakfast!

How sweet was that? Someone recently put two bags of birdseed on my front porch, too, and I have no idea who. Many thanks to whoever you were, and my birds and raccoon thank you, too. Yes, I have a certain frequent furry visitor that will empty my birdfeeder if I don’t pull it in at night. Oh well, a raccoon has to eat too, right?

Life is sweet, life is good!

I remain grate-full and hope-full!

A huge thanks to Keela Johnson (a breast cancer survivor herself), Forsyth Woman magazine and Mac & Nelli’s for the Robin-tini drink special at the May “Girls’ Night Out”! Lori Shaver, owner of Mac & Nelli’s, went all-out with pink roses on every table and pink balloons adorning the dining room. Donations were made that night, and Lori wanted me to choose the charity. I decided on Wake Forest Baptist Imaging, which has a fund called Positive Pink Power, or 3P Fund, that helps fund mammograms for ladies that may not be able to afford them otherwise. Thanks to all those who attended GNO in support of breast cancer!

How to Work Out Anywhere

hotel rooms to your living room, to an outdoor park, you can literally work out anywhere, and I’m here to tell you how. To get started, all you need is a plan and motivation!

Warm up by walking at a moderate pace on 1.0 incline for 3 minutes.

Let’s be honest, we are not all members of a gym, and even if we are, that doesn’t mean that we can get there a few times a week. With kiddos, activities, church, work and travel, we are all busy people and need to make the best use of our time. Some days, that means we can’t get to the gym.

Well, here’s the good news: you can work out anywhere. I’m breaking down specific places and workout tips to help get you started.

1 minute: Back to 1.0 incline

OUTDOOR PARKS It’s a gorgeous day outside, and you decide to bring the kiddos to the park to play. This doesn’t mean you can’t play, too. You can get a great workout in the park! Grab some of your mommy friends and get to sweating. Do the following exercises for one minute each, and then repeat three to five times until you’re feeling the burn.

Warm up: Jog in place for a couple of minutes.

Jumping Jacks Pushups off Park Equipment Jump Squats (or Regular Squats) Plank Hold on your Forearms High Knees or March in Place Tricep Dips off Park Equipment HOTEL ROOMS Whether we are traveling for work or a family vacation, most of us end up in a hotel room a couple of times a year. Fortunately, almost all hotels now have at least a mini-gym on their premises. I’m suggesting utilizing a treadmill, because 99% of gyms have that! Here’s a challenging treadmill interval workout that is sure to make your heart rate spike. This workout is great to torch calories, because you’re going from high-intensity incline, walking back to a lower incline, and up again. Those heart rate spikes and dips are where the calorie-burn lives!

1 minute: Walk at 4.0 speed at 4.0 incline.

1 minute: Walk at 4.0 speed at 5.0 incline.

1 minute: Back at 1.0 incline 1 minute: Walk at 4.0 speed at 6.0 incline.

Keep this up until you reach 10.0 incline, and then go back down to 4.0 incline. Should take 40 minutes.

YOUR LIVING ROOM Even though I’m usually in the gym a few times a day teaching group fitness classes… if I am honest: one of my favorite places to work out is my very own living room. If you have a set of free weights, utilize these, or you can even use heavy water bottles or canned goods. I recommend investing in a set of hand weights, because you can use them frequently and adding strength training/weights to your workouts can take them to whole new level.

Here’s a Tabata routine that you will love.

Tabata workouts are 20 seconds “work” and 10 seconds break, then you repeat it until you reach four minutes and then that set is done, and you can move on to the next group of exercises.

Warm up for a few minutes by marching in place and jumping in place.

TABATA #1: Squats with weight and Jumping Jacks. This means 20 seconds of squats, 10-second break, 20 seconds of jumping jacks, 10-second break—until you reach 4 minutes.

TABATA #2: Pushups and Plank Holds TABATA #3: Alternating Lunges with weight and High Knees TABATA #4: Mountain Climbers and Wide Squat with Bicep Curls So, there you have it! You can work out so many places with little to no equipment. If you have your laptop or phone with you, check out YouTube for workout inspiration or a video. If you have only a few minutes, consider a brisk walk with intervals of jumping jacks and squats. As long as you’re moving, you’re doing yourself a favor.
