to believe we are halfway through the year. Although, at this point, I honestly think everyone will be happy when 2020 is behind us. The divisiveness in our country right now seems to be at an all-time high. And it breaks my heart! As if the upcoming election and Covid-19 were not enough. Add in the ugly face of systemic racism! As a middle-aged white woman, I have no idea what it’s like to be treated differently because of the color of my skin. It’s easy to live in our safe little worlds and pretend it doesn’t exist, but recent events show that, sadly, it does for too many. I am encouraged by people in our community that are working to make a difference. I urge everyone to listen more and to love thy neighbor as themselves…ALL neighbors!

July is also my birthday, three more years till the big 60, and I am grateful for every single year! Every day is a gift to be savored! I share a birthday month with many friends and family and look forward to celebrating with them! My family gathered recently to celebrate my Aunt Tina’s 86th birthday. She and my Uncle Buck, along with their daughters, Vickie and Bonnie, have always been a blessing in my life. We were the only three girls out of nine cousins. They lived within walking distance of my grandmother, and I have fond memories of spending time with them, especially during my summer visits.

Our cover features Eyes on Trade, and their beautiful store front on Trade Street. They have a wonderful staff just waiting to take care of your eyecare needs. We continue to encourage everyone to support our local economy by shopping local as much as possible. They need you more than ever!

Three Generations of

Clemmons

From

Friday night football games to bringing home the newest family addition, there aren’t many towns that hold a special place in one’s heart like Clemmons does for the Jackson* family.

Mrs. Jackson (grandmother) moved to Clemmons when she was four years old in the year 1941. Mrs. Jackson has called Clemmons “home sweet home” for the past 79 years, other than her brief time away as her husband finished his college education and bravely served our country for 2½ years. She counts her blessings every day for the many friends and family that still live nearby in Clemmons.

Did you ever think you could take one step into Tanglewood and fall in love? On a sunny Saturday afternoon in 1956, Mrs. Jackson and a friend rode their bikes to the infamous Tanglewood Park pool to go for a refreshing swim to cool off from the Summer’s heat. That very day, Mrs. Jackson met the love of her life, whom she began dating in 1957, and with whom will soon be celebrating 61 wonderful years of marriage. Without the blink of an eye, she “would do it all over again!”

Her appreciation for Tanglewood didn’t skip a beat, as her oldest grandson, Ryan, has fond memories as a child of biking through the adventurous trails with family, playing the Par 3 course, and having picnics at the various shelters throughout the park. His soft spot for Tanglewood doesn’t end at childhood; Ryan later proposed to his high school sweetheart in the gardens at the Tanglewood Manor House.

She said yes! His younger brother, Chris, also cherishes the Christmas season, as family and friends gather together for the annual Tanglewood Festival of Lights tour.

Before her high school graduation in 1955, some of Mrs. Jackson’s fondest memories of living in Clemmons were made on the cheerleading team with her best friends, as she watched her school score touchdowns and take it to the hoop. That team spirit was passed down to her younger grandson, Chris, who met some of his closest friends by playing on multiple athletic teams, from football to lacrosse.

Following in his father’s footsteps, he graduated from West Forsyth High School, but not before being crowned Homecoming King his senior year. In a matter of fact, one of

his father’s fondest memories was proudly standing in place of Chris when he was crowned, since he was on the football team. It has brought Mark (the father) great honor raising two phenomenal sons, as well as running a 3rd-generation family business, started by his grandfather (Mrs. Jackson’s father-in-law).

West Forsyth’s impact doesn’t end on the football field, as Chris first crossed paths with the love of his life in the “900” building their freshman year of high school. After having their first date at the Sonic on Lewisville-Clemmons Road, they have been in each other’s life ever since and are now happily married. Whoever said Paris is the city for love? It can’t go without saying that Mark (the father) also met his beautiful wife one Sunday morning while he was living in Clemmons and she was in Winston-Salem.

Mrs. Jackson described her warm memories of earlier days in Clemmons as being a “quiet, peaceful community.” Without the blinking traffic lights and only a few homes with air-conditioning, Clemmons created perfect opportunities for contented family dinners under big oak trees as they talked with friendly neighbors. Mark concurred that the slow pace of living brought serenity after a hard day’s work, while his sons agreed that that same simplicity enhanced a most memorable childhood.

So, what makes three generations continue to call Clemmons home? At the end of the day, the Jackson family all agreed that Clemmons offers a special, close-knit community that gives its residents a special sense of identity and peace like none other. * Names have been changed for privacy.

Online Predators and Groomers: Who is Talking to My Child?

When

children clamor to get their hands on their parents’ cell phones, iPads, and laptops, they are associating technology with fun! Beside games, videos, and school experiences, the Internet is not viewed by most children as harmful. The harm begins, perhaps, with a lunchtime conversation about an app that features watching or creating humorous videos. Even the name TikTok offers a quirky, creative, innocence! Similar to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Snapchat, the minimum requirement to create an account without age verification is 13. All it takes to join is to falsify a birth year. The secret site leads to more significant exposure than just sexual lyrics, suggestive dancing, revealing clothing, and bad language; in a study, even strangers liked every one of the same videos!

Privacy Settings Every account holder needs a means of protection—a shield to prevent outsiders and unwelcome visitors from entering. Children need to be aware of the purpose of privacy settings. New accounts are first established as “public” by default, implying that anyone can access all private information, send, and receive direct messages. A child who is ten may think a 13-year-old is old enough to create an account. According to research, roughly two million 12- to 15-year-old users listed phone and e-mail information publicly.

What is an Online Groomer?

How much information would your child expose online?

Would your daughter or son mention a parent’s name, school, teachers, or local sports teams? Do you think a stranger could extract personal details, such as a street name, house number, or an access code to the home?

Predators are predominately married men with children who are upstanding professionals within the community; yet, leading a secret life online. From the beginning, the interaction between your child and an adult will seem harmless. Predators will create an emotional connection through trust. They will try and relate to the child’s hobbies or interests. In time, the groomer may use sexually explicit conversations to test boundaries and seek information to determine a child’s curiosity about intimacy. Through some form of blackmail, perhaps by means of something written or a picture, the child will agree to an in-person meeting.

Questioning the Safety of Apps Almost 90% of sexual advances towards children occur either through instant messaging or a chat room. What parent would want to imagine the lengths a predator will go to bully, sexually harass, or stalk a child online?

1. Ask.fm: Ask any question anonymously. As a result, the answers may include vulgar or offensive comments.

2. Houseparty: As one form of video-conferencing, the “app” allows up to eight people to communicate through texts or face-time. Users can take screenshots and send links through chat threads.

3. KiK Messenger: A free instant messaging and social networking app that allows users to exchange messages, photos, videos, and sketches.

4. Tinder: A popular site for tweens and teens connected through a GPS location tracker. Similar to Instagram, users can post photos and initiate open and private conversations.

5. Omegle: A video-chatting application intended for adults that partners random strangers from across the globe. Although anonymous, the two parties can send and receive texts. The “recommended” age is 18, with no program to verify age.

6. Periscope: Users 13 and older can upload live videos. All profile information, which includes a profile picture, biography, location, and e-mail address, is public.

7. Tumblr: To avoiding running into parents, teens frequent the microblogging platform Tumblr. All posts and photos are public with no means to establish privacy settings.

8. Whisper: Intended for 15-year-olds and older, the app allows the user to make an anonymous confession; however, it does include a GPS location tracker.

All eight apps LACK internal monitoring controls!

A Child’s Secret Life Online By the time a child reaches the age of six, he or she can successfully navigate a website. And, what better place to peruse YouTube videos or Instagram than in the comfort of a bedroom? Parents can easily block any potential technological secrecy by asking children not to use their laptops or iPads in seclusion, but openly at the kitchen table. If the parent(s) eliminate(s) privacy while online, children will learn to abide by safety rules, learn about privacy settings, and begin to view the Internet as a helpful, but dangerous place!

The Power of Summer

represents one powerful transformation in the human mind and body. The increased days of abundant sunshine and the availability of the season’s fruits and vegetables supply the body with extra vitamins and antioxidants. As metabolism increases, calories burn naturally. It’s no wonder the season delivers the perfect prescription for health, nutrition, exercise, and happiness. In our habits, we don’t have to say goodbye to the season. The regimen can last all year long!

Visiting Farmers’ Markets Meet our local growers and support their efforts by attending the many farmers’ markets across the Piedmont. In addition to purchasing freshly picked produce, you can discover what local growers and farmers offer patrons. From handmade butter and cheese to weekly produce boxes, the marketplace expands the opportunity to learn more about nutritious health! As you eat light, small meals, focus on fruits and vegetables containing a high water content, such as peaches, oranges, melons, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

Berries Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries contain antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and E. One cup of berries daily can rid the body of oxidative stress and prevent premature aging and immune system disorders! Consider adding fresh fruit to smoothies, yogurt, granola, or salads, and desserts.

Homegrown In August, gardeners can start planting fall crops. Think of the benefits of having ample lettuce, onions, carrots, and other cool-weather vegetables. Don’t worry if space is an issue. Consider building a small raised bed or using a barrel, bucket, or a tiered greenhouse to grow your favorite vegetables or fruits. (Please read and follow planting advice. Each crop, vine, or cane may require a creative support structure!)

Hydration After six to eight hours of recommended nightly sleep, the body needs to release toxins. Drinking a minimum of one eight-ounce glass of water can quickly maintain the proper functioning of internal organs and keep the skin radiant. It’s an advantage, especially as temperatures climb beyond 90 degrees. Remember to travel with plenty of fluids and listen to your body. Enjoy flavored water; then, consider preparing a pitcher of cucumber- or berry-infused water!

Exercise Often!

With children at home or a spouse welcoming retirement, the decision to become physically active is one of the best things to boost mental and physical health.

Take advantage of the cool morning temperatures to develop an exercise regimen. Perhaps, yoga, walking, and biking are preferable activities, while a partner finds dancing, swimming, and kayaking enjoyable! Getting outdoors every day will lead to a steady rate of progress. Begin with a partner to encourage you, or join a group! (Just remember to hydrate before, during, and after your workout sessions, even if you do not feel thirsty!)

Hobbies and Eliminating Stress Where can you lose all sense of time? For some, the answer is in books or fabric, mixing bowls or gardening tools, and others may delve into bird watching or writing letters. In moments of high stress, we need a hobby, an activity that eases the heart rate and promotes tranquility and energy. It doesn’t need to stop at the end of the season; find a way to keep going!

Sunscreen Protection Enjoying the outdoors also implies a need to protect against the leading cause of sunburn, ultra-violet rays! As it may be difficult to discern between various types of sunscreens, consider the following information.

•“ Broad-spectrum” is a term that protects the skin against sunburn, aging, and cancer.

•“ Sun protection factor,” SPF, is a level of protection provided by a sunscreen. SPF 15 filters out 93%, while SPF 30 contains a barrier filtering 97%. And, in terms of price, is it cost-effective to purchase SPF 50 when it offers a shield of 98%?

•“ Water-resistant” labels do not imply the ingredients are waterproof or sweat-proof. Most lotions require application after either 40 or 80 minutes. The best practice is to read the label and follow its suggestion for reapplications.

In permanent marker, record the year of purchase on each bottle. Most sunscreens remain at their original strength after three years.

Keep a hat and sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV rays by the front door, and in your vehicle! In addition to protecting your skin, it’s an excellent idea to think of your vision, too!

Tim gave an intriguing insight: “Even between March and April, despite the shutdown, home values continued to increase by 1.4%.” Adding that, “Additionally, home inventory continues to be low. Choosing Traditions That Are Important to Both of You Many people grow up experiencing different traditions, whether around holidays or special milestones, without ever really realizing that what they consider “normal” truly isn’t normal at all, when looked at through a global lens. Only a year or so into our relationship, it was easy to see the difference between our family traditions, as well as spot the similarities. As our baby boy joins the mix, we’re excited to incorporate favorite family dishes, games, and music from both sides, while creating some new ones of our own. If there’s a holiday one side celebrates and not the other, explore the purpose behind it and make the reason clear why your family observes the holiday.

Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion Outside of Just Your Family Not all children are raised seeing families that don’t look like them or learning about cultures that are different than their own.

While it’s important for us to raise our children in a way that embraces parts of both of our cultures, we also look forward to finding intentional ways to celebrate diversity as a whole. Think about the toys children play with or the books they read or the cartoons that they watch. There is an opportunity to be found in each of these categories to introduce characters and stories of different races, skin tones, body types, disabilities, and more. My niece, for instance, may be a white little girl, but my sister has made it important for her to have baby dolls of different races represented. Looking at the friends, family, church congregation, and other social circles your family finds itself in may also help to find an opportunity to celebrate diversity and inclusion.

Remember What Really Makes Your Family Special While it’s important to embrace our family’s blended cultural and racial background, that’s only one part of what makes our growing family special. Allow your family values, beliefs, culture, traditions, and unique take on life to shine through to all and be celebrated!

Our hope is to introduce our little one to the many differences within his or her family and beyond, reminding him or her that our differences are part of what makes our world beautiful.

In

the months of pregnancy leading up to the birth of a child, there are always a number of conversations between the parents-to-be. With so much to plan and prepare before the baby arrives, conversation topics vary from surface-level things like nursery decor and sleep logistics, while others may go a little deeper.

After years of navigating my husband and my two different cultures and learning how to embrace special parts of each throughout our marriage, it’s no surprise that we questioned how to make sure we did the same as we started this next chapter together. Expanding our multicultural family means there is an opportunity to teach not only our future child about both cultures, but to celebrate them from the very beginning.

Finding Small Ways to Incorporate Both Cultures From adding a bilingual greeting on our baby registry to buying English-to-Spanish children's books, my husband and I have found small ways to celebrate both mommy’s and daddy’s cultures when preparing for our little one’s arrival. In your own family, find the simple things that help carve out space for your different cultures to shine through. It may be artwork, music, recipes, holiday celebrations, and other special things. Those small gestures create representation in your household and beyond and can set a strong foundation as your child grows, seeing different aspects of his or her identity.

diversity of North Carolina’s three sub-biomes, namely the coastal plains, Piedmont, and the mountains, reveals varieties of forest and non-forest ecosystems. Based on our consistent levels of precipitation and four distinct seasons, we live in the biome of a temperate deciduous forest. It’s no wonder our climate attracts diverse species of colorful birds and smaller mammals, as well as dangerous creatures, from the rattlesnake to the southern black widow spider. In the mountain regions, outside WinstonSalem, live black bears, bobcats, and coyote. And perhaps the cougar is not extinct, but resurging in numbers.

Unless searching for specific names of birds, insects, aquatic vertebrae, and mammals in the Piedmont Triad, you won’t be aware of creatures that no longer fly, swim, or walk here. In calling all defenders of wildlife, it’s essential to know why our ecosystem is on the verge of losing valuable creatures.

PART 5: The Bog Turtle

Can you hear the melodious sound of babble when standing outside your home? Off in the distance, rippling currents force the water’s movement around, between, and over rocks.

Barriers, such as a burrowing family of muskrats, entice the waterway into soft soil, creating yet another curve in the pathway. In time, the hollow expands, leaving behind erosion, or dividing the creek into another shallow watercourse.

Without investigating the dynamic habitat of native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowers, most people completely disregard the essential eco-system of finned and legged walkers living nearby.

The very path of your waterway merges into expansive streams and rivers.

Without our really knowing the effects, plant herbicides and storm runoffs from roofs, streets, and parking lots filter into our waterways. From either direction, the creatures that swim, fly, and walk are in trouble.

The Bog Turtle Near the wet, grassy creeks in Forsyth County is home to one of the smallest turtles in North America. Spanning the width of an adult hand, bog turtles possess bright-orange or yellow patches on the side of their neck and can live for 50 years. The wet meadow devoid of trees allows the reptile to bask in sunny areas, or dive into the mud to escape predators or extreme temperatures.

Humans, mostly disreputable pet traders, pluck it from its environment, limiting its lifespan for cash. With an agreement between the Natural Resource Conservation Service and

private landowners to protect and maintain the habitat, the bog turtles can survive. Listed as critically endangered, its numbers currently hover between 2,500 and 10,000.

The Triad Ecosystem Beyond the residential plots of houses, trimmed grasses, and concrete, there are few functioning ecosystems remaining.

Prairies have transitioned to farmlands, and woodlands made room for the developmental needs of humans. Each time we lose a species, it impacts the benefits of our own life.

Currently, North Carolina is home to 10.5 million human residents and is the 10th fastest-growing state in the country.

In welcoming new families and the expansion of companies, we must also research and protect the 61 federally threatened and endangered species.

Hikes and Trails Begin your effort by becoming a hiker, a walker of trails, and make it a point to visit the numerous parks near and far. Have you experienced the sevenmile trail at Salem Lake or the 11-mile loop through forest and wetlands at the Piedmont Environmental Center? It’s certainly not far from home. (To learn more, Google the “25 Top Hikes in the Triad Area.”)

Expand your desire to see more and learn about the growing list of endangered species by visiting statewide arboretums, botanical gardens, and national parks.

Ways to Help the Wild • I t begins with helping a variety of animals establish a home.

•B uild bat, butterfly, and bird houses to offer protection against predators and to encourage repopulation.

•C hoose native trees, such as oaks, birch, maples, and others, to feed and offer a home to creatures.

•D o not purchase, and try to eliminate, invasive, non-native species of plants, shrubs, and trees that cannot offer nutritional value to our insects and birds.

•W ildflower gardens, including those harboring milkweed, lure Monarch butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. These care-free habitats can improve soil health and prevent erosion.

Educational Preparedness for the Next Level: MIDDLE SCHOOL

schools opened the door wide enough for children to experience routine, rules, and a foundation of learning within a cozy, tight-knit community of classmates.

Teachers took time during small group instruction and one-on-one meetings to focus on improving individual weaknesses, while building confidence levels!

Inspirational words helped encourage children not to fear the size of the junior high campus and immersion into block scheduling. As the door of educational and social opportunity extends farther, rising sixth-graders will need a balance of independence and guidance.

Calendar Skills or the remainder of the summer, rising F sixth-graders should practice utilizing their desk calendar to good purpose.

1. Preteens can resume the responsibility of keeping track of meetings and activities by simply writing dates down.

And, don’t forget to cross off each task upon completion! It’s a great feeling!

2. Make sure your preteen knows how to create a daily to-do list, prioritizing tasks and encouraging time management.

This can include tasks such as walk the dog, empty the dishwasher, vacuum, and read two chapters.

3. Teachers will challenge students to read independently and will present a quiz on a designated day; therefore, encourage your child to set weekly goals. Procrastination impacts many intelligent students, especially if they disregard their daily and monthly calendars!

Making Decisions

Every student can verbalize how they feel about the words “write,” “calculate,” “read,” and “take notes” with one facial expression! The trick to working through difficult tasks is to discover effective organizational methods and tools. For instance, the act of notetaking takes time and practice. Audiobooks, for example, increase the ability to process information and improve listening. Perhaps reading is a strength; then, think about writing key words in color to enhance your visual memory, or begin using index cards. Some people need to talk through directions, reading prompts, and computations.

Try it out! If it doesn’t work, find a new method! No one is born with excellent organizational skills; however, students can create success with the aid of a handful of ideal strategies!

Between sixth and seventh grade, children will try to distance themselves from parents and seek opportunities for social interaction with each other. More than ever, preteens and teens need to engage in activities at school and discover new interests, while expanding their social circles. It’s allowing your child to become safely involved in the community. Trust borders with a fine line at times. The goal of the awkward pubescent years requires guidance, providing an anchor of support, and learning from the mistakes that will indeed include heartbreak, embarrassment, and a feeling of failure.

Through those moments, the middle school child will grow!

Establishing Open Dialogue The mindset of a child drastically changes from age 11 to 12. The child who once loved strawberries and tomatoes may soon show disdain because a classmate claimed the color red was offensive!

The fun-loving cheerleader may turn in an assignment late because she didn’t want to read it in front of her classmates. Between mood swings and issues involving navigating through loyal friendships, the arrival of adolescence will place a new priority into open dialogue and confirming self acceptance!

Nonfiction and fiction novels can illustrate how real people and characters solve the difficulties of social drama. Through themes of a novel, parents can help ’tweens see themselves as heroes of their own stories!

Parents will miss the intimate relationships from their child’s elementary school teachers. Don’t worry, middle school teachers are not hands-off. They will require you to openly communicate difficulties as well as positive experiences occurring at home. The triangle connecting parents, teachers, and students still exists, although it will include twice as many staff members.

They will expect students to be subject to a learning curve when it comes to lockers, changing classrooms, organizing notebooks and binders, and studying for exams—all within the layers of friendship dramas, new academic rigors, and puberty. Work together!

matter what time of the year you plan to travel, national parks throughout the United States are great places to visit.

These bucket-list spots are full of wonder and rich in history. Our nation is home to 419 national parks. If you plan on traveling to each one in the future, it may take some time. To help narrow down your list, here are the national parks you may want to visit first.

Yosemite National Park in California: Nearly 1,200 square miles in size, Yosemite National Park is known for its waterfalls, valleys, wilderness, and more. Favorite spots among travelers are Glacier Point, Crane Flat Area, and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

These three areas are just a few spots from which to view the beauty of the land and waterfalls, the groves of sequoia trees (in fact, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias houses over 500 trees alone), and rock formations. All of the national parks listed have sights that can’t be missed, but the sights of Yosemite National Park are ones that stand out from the others.

Denali National Park in Alaska: Located in Anchorage, Alaska, Denali National Park is home to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and Mount McKinley, North America’s tallest mountain. Visitors can take part in other activities, such as hiking and zip-lining. However, a trip to the Denali National Park wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Husky Homestead. Iditarod Champion, Jeff King, runs the Husky Homestead, which gives travelers a chance to learn about The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, cuddle with Alaskan Husky puppies, and see racing sleds, Arctic survival gear, and more. The well-known race is yearly, in early March. Mushers and their team of 14 dogs must travel from Anchorage to Nome in 8 to 15 days or more. Want more of a relaxing trip to Denali? A visit to Anchorage allows people a chance to see the mountain range from a distance.

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia: A little closer to the Tarheel state is the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Part of the Cumberland Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains, the Cumberland Gap is known for being a key passageway through the lower central section of the Appalachian Mountains. It was first used by Native Americans and later on by explorers, pioneers, and frontiersmen, including Daniel Boone. Today, travelers can see sites that have been called “the first great gateway to the west,” camp, bike, and hike at the Wilderness Road State Park and be in three states at once at the Tri-State Peak.

The Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona: President Teddy Roosevelt coined the saying, “[This is] the one great sight which every American should see.”

Made an official national monument and park in 1908, the Grand Canyon was created by the Colorado River. Today, visitors can look at the majestic sights of the various canyons, rivers, and tributaries. In addition, you can camp, visit Grand Canyon Village, walk the Trail of Time, whitewater raft on the river, and more. All of these exciting sights and activities make the Grand Canyon National Park one of the most visited destinations in the world.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in North Carolina: North Carolina is home to many national parks. In fact, one is just a half-hour or so away in Greensboro. The Guilford Courthouse National Military Park is the site of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse during the Revolutionary War. Major General Nathanael Greene’s militia and the Continental Army fought against Lord Charles Earl Cornwallis and his army on March 15, 1781.

Today people of all ages can do a self-guided cell-phone tour, visit the Hoskins Farmstead (an 18th-century farmstead owned originally by Joseph and Hannah Hoskins), and walk throughout the battlefield. History and military fans will spend hours at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park learning all the unique information the site has to offer.

These five national parks are just a few of the many sites to visit throughout the United States. Start with the ones closest to you, then keep venturing out from there. You’ll be glad you did.

many of us, this year is nothing like we imagined it would be. So many big events, celebrations and even family reunions have been canceled.

Right now, the most privileged of us are safe at home. But that’s not the story for everyone.

For victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault, home can be one of the most dangerous places during the COVID-19 crisis. Increased anxiety and depression are also symptoms of self isolation.

As our community continues to face unprecedented challenges during this pandemic, Family Services launched a new landing page StrongAtHome.org, to promote our ongoing services in domestic violence, sexual assault, and counseling.

Our message is simple: • YOU ARE NOT ALONE. • WE ARE HERE WHEN YOU NEED US. • THIS IS WHAT WE DO. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE While Family Services has not yet seen a visible uptick in the number of local domestic violence reports, our experts at Safe On Seven say they have reason to believe that cases are, in fact, on the rise.

Despite the fact that the number of crisis line calls and walk-ins are down, Safe on Seven Program Manager Meredith Hooks said she believes the number of domestic violence cases is increasing, but the COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder for people to get help.

“Often that crisis line call will be made when the abuser is at work or when she’s taking the children to school. None of

that is happening right now as people are working from home or they’ve lost their jobs,” Hooks said.

Help is just a phone call away. 336-723-8125 SEXUAL ASSAULT The truth is, at times like these, victims and survivors of sexual assault could be isolated and confined in or near their homes where sexual abuse may be taking place.

We also know that because of the potential close proximity of perpetrators, coming forward to report incidents of sexual assault can sometimes be challenging at times like this.

• Based on 2018-19 data, nearly 2,500 North Carolina children under the age of 18, and more than 6,700 adults were sexually assaulted.

• 28 percent of those victims were assaulted by a relative.

COUNSELING As a result of living day after day of this crisis, our friends and neighbors are experiencing unprecedented levels of anxiety and depression. They know the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything else, and how to travel 200 years back in time! In intricate details, their explanations provide the difference between AT-AT and AT-ST, and hallows and Horcruxes. We also have another level of friends who collect models and know phrases in “alienese,” “elfish,” Dothraki, and Klingon. Is it just one friend?

Probably not!

Let’s Count Some of the Ways

In a world where geekdom has its very own holiday, it’s time to celebrate ye proud and very verbal enthusiasts! Get ready!—Monday, July 13th, is just around the corner! No longer do the terms exclusively sound like techno-babble.

It’s widened to multiple categories and stretched to galaxies far, far away! You could be a music or a car geek. Have a passion for statistics or electronics, or be included in book or movie fandoms!

Before and Now

Birds of a feather flock together. In days of yore, it was quite easy to spot a geek by their hair, glasses, clothing, and the critical indicator, the pocket-protector.

Geeks once sat outside the library playing Dungeons and Dragons and pretending to be heroes, only to camp years later outside computer stores awaiting the release of the next gaming system! Geeks can openly identify their passions through an array of T-shirts and signature clothing, baseball hats, car decals, and rooms dedicated to their fandom! It’s more than knowing a wealth of information about one subject. Fans join blogs, enter chats to discuss characters, and follow the author, singer, or actor on social media. They join meets, go to conventions, and arrive hours before premiers and openings. And, when geeks find themselves standing in a long line at a hardware or grocery store, they initiate a conversation with a stranger to prove “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.”

The Annual Hackathon

The computer-programming geeks may not enjoy recreational pursuits at the gym or attending sporting events. Passions often coordinate with specific skill sets. Imagine working for a security information and event management company that held a “hackathon” for employees. Participants ranging from sales and customer service to engineering spend two days creating ingenious gadgets and features to complement a product. Teams construct bots, while others design algorithms or software! Elements of the hackathon integrate hidden Easter eggs, games of capture the flag, and conclude with a winner, and all participants receive a T-shirt!

Comic-Con

Months before a convention, the countdown begins. Over one-hundred thousand people start the process of assembling or hand-stitching multiple costumes for the four-day event. It requires a thoughtful process to reveal a recognizable, yet uniquely obscure character. Ticketholders enjoy seeing families or groups of villains and superheroes, long-lost cartoon characters, gladiators, Vikings, and aliens. In addition to visiting multiple vendors selling merchandise, attendees visit scheduled sessions and panels, as well as offsite events. Strangers stop to take pictures with a character likeness or make introductions. Expect the wow factor, meeting a favorite star in the elevator, on the stairs, or in a room. And, be considerate if you bump into someone.

The voice alone may heighten your fandom experience!

The Next Generation

Today’s adults no longer have to hide their love of science fiction, fantasy, or even the extensive collection of classic T-shirts. Parents and grandmothers, great uncles and cousins share their expansive knowledge of literature, television, movies, cartoons and eras to raise a new generation of passionate geeks!

The Importance of Supporting Local Restaurants… and Hair Salons…and Shops…and All Other Local Businesses

Most

people will undoubtedly agree that this year has been the most challenging year for most. Not only have we dealt with a new virus that has wreaked havoc on the world, we’ve also been hit with a tremendous blow to our local economy. The impact of COVID-19 has caused a far-reaching devastation, with estimates that 40% of small businesses may not survive. Given the importance that small businesses have on community, this estimate should gravely concern us all!

As we continue to progress in the various phases of re-opening, it’s critically important to continue to support those local businesses that make our community thrive. Consider the following stats from the Small Business Administration: small business applications plummeted by 27% in the weeks following March 13th, 2020.

Why does that matter? Because that means that many would-be businesses did not open. And because of that— new jobs were not created.

So what about the businesses that were in business pre-COVID-19? Not only

have many not survived the shutdown and will not re-open, but small business employment dropped by 15.7%—that is, approximately 19.6 million jobs were cut by small businesses who could not afford to retain staff during the shutdown.

The reason all of this matters is because small businesses are the heartbeat of America! In 2016, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council reported that of the 5.6 million employer firms in the country, 99.7% of those were considered small businesses (500 or fewer employees)…. And lest you think that’s not really such a small business—98.2% of those businesses had 100 or fewer employees! Those with less than 20 employees made up 89%. So the impact of small businesses cannot be underrated.

Moreover, money spent in small businesses stays in the community.

For every $1 spent at a locally owned restaurant, salon, boutique, or other business, 68% stays in the local economy. That kind of impact supports everything from jobs to schools to real estate, and everything in between! It’s

huge! Especially when you consider that small businesses, on average, donate 250% more to non-profits and community causes.

Every year in November, small businesses around the country participate in Small Business Saturday.

I’m urging everyone who reads this to get a jump start on it. Now. In July. Let the small businesses in our community know we support them!

Do Not Feed the Animals

a foot slides one hesitant step closer, a small hand extends the morsel of food towards a duck, goose, or wily squirrel. In the family outing to a park or lake, it’s often the first experience young children have with wild animals. Curiosity and wonderment encourage the desire to watch, and especially touch. Feeders are an easy tool to hang from a variety of locations near to, and far from, a home’s windows. Parents can encourage the safe distance to witness the arrival and departures of birds and the antics of squirrels. For those wanting to help all wild animals, sympathy arrives at the sightings of a barn cat that prowls through the yard on occasion. Are there rules in feeding wild creatures that appear helpless?

The Nose Knows!

In the season of picnics and outdoor gatherings, the aroma of meat, pet food, sugar, and other foods sails on the winds to indirectly produce an olfactory perception of a nearby creature. Black bears can travel 18 miles, although in a straight line, to a food source, while snakes have a developed sense of perceiving scent particles in the air with their tongues. Just because of the enjoyment and necessity of eating, wild animals are not picky.

Opossums, raccoons, and rats will consume any treat, whether just unhealthy or potentially toxic. Bread is often in great supply, and a first thought. While the ingredients may fill the animal, they contain no nutritional value and could cause sickness if mold is present. A better option is to scatter thawed frozen peas or corn, or remove and tightly contain any remaining human or pet food.

The habit of rinsing all recyclable glass and plastic containers, as well as cans, removes food remnants and minimizes odors.

Visitors Coming Round Wildlife arrives in a yard for specific reasons: perhaps your location is near a creek, or it offers a constant supply of pet food. In hoping to feed a stray animal, the good-natured effort applied often attracts a more significant problem than a feral cat. The nocturnal forager, the raccoon, uses 75% of its brain to see with its hands. Through sensory signals, the masked animal can visualize objects inside containers, buildings, and barns, and work through semi-complicated levers and latches to enter. Other animals, such as coyotes and rats, will return to a food source and produce ever-multiplying numbers of offspring. Territorial aggression occurs when two species of animals fight over

a food source, as well as the territory. Sometimes removing access to food and water may eliminate your specific problem; however, scavengers carrying diseases, like distemper and parvo will still wander throughout neighboring yards in hopes of finding food.

A Lack of Wildlife A location without evidence of playful rabbits and squirrels also implies that a wild cat, termed feral, is nearby. Usually stealthy in order to avoid humans, the cat will show distrust and keep its distance. Despite the kind intentions of the human, its instinctual desire will be to bite, kick, and scratch in hopes of escape, if caught.

An animal born to the wild does not need human assistance or cat food. The lack of small animals in your yard includes fierce control of the vermin population.

Baby and Den Comfort in supplying the needs of water and food leads to the maternal instincts of a female creating a nest or locating a den out of a human’s sight. The find is exciting, especially when kits, or baby rabbits, are found. Even though parents may leave their babies unattended, it does not imply abandonment. Similarly, it’s vital for homeowners, especially children, to leave animals alone, rather than providing foster care.

Feeding wildlife has its limits. If you ever fear your efforts might result in aggressive or destructive acts, then it is time to consider refraining from providing food. Four-legged squatters can quickly move into attics, storage sheds, and crawl spaces with little disturbance to you. Please, do not resort to pesticides! Most chemicals hurt beneficial populations of insects, animals, and house pets. It is not cruel to seek professional assistance!

As with everything, maintenance is required. Your animal will need to be fed, and some pets will need their cages or aquariums cleaned regularly. Make sure you have sufficient financial wherewithal to pay for vet visits. Dogs and cats need to be upto-date on all of their shots. Do you have a crate for your canine companion or feline friend to sleep in or stay in when you need time apart? Do you have a collar and leash for your dog?

You may have requirements that your pet has to meet, but think of the matter the other way around. Your pet has requirements for you, too. You need to have the right personality and resources to take care of your animal. You have to be able to provide a good, safe, and loving home, or you shouldn’t consider owning a pet.

Think hard about what kind of pet would be the best possible fit for you and your family before you rush out and get one. If not a dog or a cat—and you still want a fur baby—what about a smaller caged animal like a rabbit, ferret, Guinea pig, gerbil, hamster, mouse, rat, hedgehog or chinchilla?

More of a bird person? Try parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds, parrots, macaws, canaries, or finches.

benefits of having a pet are many, and provide an excellent opportunity for kids to learn how to take care of others. Here are some of the top pets to consider, including a few unusual creatures you’d least expect to find in your household.

It is well documented that children who have been raised with pets can often avoid issues with allergies and asthma later in life. Caring for a pet can also nurture qualities in children that help them become better people, including compassion, empathy, love, trust, and responsibility.

Children can do simple chores like changing a litter box and providing playtime and exercise for the pet.

Kids can also be involved with the training process, which can be fun and rewarding.

Bonding with an animal can be a rich, valuable, and meaningful experience for everyone in the household. An animal is good company, doesn’t laugh when you’re having a bad hair day and doesn’t judge you when you’re wearing mismatched clothes. Studies have shown that caring for a pet can also help decrease depression when a simple tail wag, lick on the hand, or nudge asking to be petted can help lift spirits.

Just as with people, a positive, healthy relationship has to be the right fit for both parties. Don’t just go out and buy or adopt a pet willy-nilly. Do your research first, check out what’s available and interact with the animal first before you make a decision.

Setting up an aquarium may be just your ticket. Some of the best fish for newbies include rasboras, goldfish, tetras, and betta fish (which must be kept solitary).

Don’t have arachnophobia? Love little 8-legged, hairy critters that crawl? Tarantulas may be the ideal pet for you. Here are some good ones to choose from: Mexican red-knees, Chilean roses, Costa Rican zebras, Mexican redlegs, Honduran curly hairs, Brazilian blacks, Mexican red rumps or desert blondes.

Potbelly pigs, chickens, lambs, goats, cows, alpaca, or horses are good options for those living in a rural setting. They each need a specialized environment, feed, and care.

Having a pet requires patience and practice. It’s a lot of hard work, but it is well worth the effort and energy. Whichever pet(s) you decide to bring home, make sure to learn all about them, how to care for them, and get as prepared as possible with the food and supplies you might need. Oh, and don’t forget to snap a pic or a few dozen to post on social media. Your friends will love to see the newest members of your family!

Why Is There Evil in the World?

COVID-19, riots, looting, unemployment, and a crashed economy, there have been a lot of people asking, “Why?” Why has God allowed this? Why is there evil in this world? I’ve spent a lot of time recently on these kinds of questions…two weeks actually. On my website, I recently finished a series in response to hard questions that both believers and non-believers ask. So with all that said, if God is good, why is there evil in the world?

The thing is—at some point or another, we all doubt. We all ask questions. I understand trying to reconcile the God of love with the God of justice. But we have got to stop trying to put God into a box of our own design. We’ve got to stop expecting God to do everything precisely as we think things should be done! At some point, we’ve got to stop questioning Him at every turn and take Him at His word! He’s already told us that His ways and thoughts are not like ours (Isaiah 55:89)! And as it says in Isaiah 29:16, “You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, ‘He did not make me’; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, ‘He has no understanding’?”

We have evil in this world because it’s a fallen, broken world. Plain and simple.

We have to stop expecting earth to be perfection, because Heaven on earth isn’t here…yet. That’s a different topic. But the world has been broken ever since the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve messed

things up because they bit into Satan’s lie with as much vigor as they bit into the forbidden fruit. And sin has been a global pandemic ever since. So we can’t keep blaming God that the world is broken.

Blame Adam, Eve, and the snake! Adam and Eve succumbed to temptation, and the rest is history.

I know that’s not the answer that some people want. But let me counter this question with another question—if we could have things perfect here and right now, what would be the point of Heaven?

Believe me, I’ve wondered why, too. I have also wondered why our all-powerful, allknowing God even bothered to make us!

Being all-knowing, He knew that Adam and Eve were going to sin, and the world would be polluted with sin and evil. I don’t understand, either. But I’m not God. I’m not supposed to understand. I go back to the verse from Isaiah—as the clay, I don’t get to question the Potter’s decisions. He is the Creator; He has the final say.

There are a lot of unknowns out there. And as the created beings, our responsibility is to trust God when He tells us that His ways are higher than ours. We choose to take Him at His word completely, or not at all. But I truly believe that one day, we will understand why God has allowed certain things to happen. I think, someday, we will see the good He still brought from this fallen, broken world in which we live.

Dr. and Mrs. Street of 545 Oaklawn Avenue

The

story goes that Miss Julia Lilly Montgomery came to teach in WinstonSalem for an incredibly special reason. Her faculty advisor at the North Carolina College for Women in Greensboro told her that Winston-Salem paid its teachers a higher salary than any other place in North Carolina! She got a job and a room in a house where women rented rooms and boarded for meals.

One day a handsome gentleman came in to eat and spotted her in a line of lovely young women waiting to go in the dining room.

He said to himself, “That’s my girl!” But she didn’t know that until later! Back in the hall that evening, she got a call on the hall telephone, and one of the young women called out, “Julia Lilly, it’s some doctor calling for you.”

Dr. Claudius Augustus Street was the Forsyth County Physician, and he invited Miss Montgomery to ride in his Model T Ford around the county, seeing patients and courting at the same time. At the end of one week, they were engaged to be married.

He was hoping for a summer wedding, but Miss Montgomery had promised the Children’s Home Society in Greensboro that she would work for them as a sort of social worker all summer, checking out homes and making sure the environments were safe and happy for the children. She was a woman of her word, and happily completed the work she had promised to do.

After the summer, a simple wedding in First Baptist Church in Raleigh happened in the fall of 1924.

Dr. Street was a Harvard Medical School graduate.

He had grown up in the Linville Falls area of North Carolina, so he took Mrs. Street up to meet his family after the wedding. She was quite surprised at the deeply rustic nature of the roads and the mountains of Avery County, being a Raleigh girl. She grew to adore and later write about the mountain folks in her children’s books: Fiddlers Fancy and Moccasin Tracks.

The newlyweds purchased a home in Ardmore, and Carol Montgomery Street was born on January 1, 1926. The newspaper stated, “First Baby of the Year Daughter of the County Physician.” Dr. Street became sure that he wanted to learn about the fascinating new study of pediatric medicine, which was just emerging, so he took Julia Lilly, baby Carol, and they moved to St. Louis Missouri for him to get a residency and learn pediatric medicine at Children’s Hospital of Washington University Medical School. His Harvard Medical School training had served him well. And all from a country boy from Linville Falls!

Dr. Street never lost his love of “old-timee” music and treasured watching the Grand Ole Opry on television.

They returned from St. Louis, and Dr. Street started his practice in the Spring Street area, where he practiced pediatric medicine until his death in 1968. He was known as a very caring doctor and drove countless miles in his Comet visiting patients. Being his granddaughter, I can remember him opening his glove compartment and getting a sugar cube out, which he kept for his blood-sugar emergencies. He always shared with his grandchildren. It was a special treat!

Another special thing about my Grandaddy was his bowties. Once I asked my mama why he didn’t wear a necktie like daddy. She said, ask him! “He said in his kind voice: “The babies grab a necktie, it’s harder for them to reach a bowtie!” Makes good sense!

The family had selected Centenary United Methodist Church as their choice, and Mrs. Street continued there until she passed. They were very proud of this fine growing church and the great minister, Dr. Mark Depp, who christened their grandchildren.

Salem history on January 22, 1954. The wedding was held at the church, but the reception was held on Oaklawn Avenue, with neighbors supplying the food and cake!

Their pets were generally Siamese cats. In the 1980s Mrs. Street adopted a white kitty named Sister, who was great company to her in later years.

Dr. Street was always on the phone, talking to anxious parents, and never retired, practicing pediatric medicine until the time of his passing.

He spent much time driving around to homes and, having grown up poor himself, always helped people, regardless of their ability to pay. He was also an excellent diagnostician, and was known as a holistic doctor before it became fashionable. He always treated the whole patient and cared about promoting the health of the children of Forsyth County and surrounding areas.

Julia Lilly and Claude added a son Gus in 1928, and they moved into a new home at 545 Oaklawn Avenue.

Carol and Gus enjoyed all the pleasures of living in Winston-Salem, with great friends: The Shores, the Stocktons, the Prongays, and others.

Carol became friends with Jane Pollard who lived on Stratford Road, a block away. Jane and Carol remained friends their entire lives. Both attended Women’s College in Greensboro and later moved to Raleigh, and settled and had families of their own. Carol Street’s wedding to Archie McMillan of Raleigh was due to be a large affair at the family’s beloved Centenary Methodist, with a wedding reception at Forsyth Country Club. The event was drastically changed due to one of the biggest snowstorms in Winston

Gus and Mary Jane Street moved to a farm in Davey County, where they raised dairy cattle and later created an airport called Strawberry Hill. Carol and Archie had five children, and Gus and Mary Jane had four children. Carol supported Archie in his legal and legislative careers.

Mrs. Street made fast friends and became a member of a women’s birthday club that included her friend, Ruth Prongay. The club continued from 1930 until about 1990!

She also became a writer of radio shows, children’s books, and poetry. In her later years, she published a book review column in a local weekly newspaper called The Suburbanite. She taught writing at the Winston-Salem YWCA-sponsored writing classes, which produced many published authors.

Grandchildren visited the home on Oaklawn Avenue, and after Dr. Street passed away in 1968, Mrs. Street continued to live in the house she loved until 1991. Grandchildren brought their children to visit their beloved “WuWu.” In later years she thoroughly enjoyed her Oaklawn Avenue neighbors such as Drs. Carolyn and Ben Huntley and Iris and Harry Reed. She also loved the Winston- Salem and Forsyth County community, as well as the local and state writer’s communities.

A book signing was held in her honor in Old Salem of a revised edition of her Moravian children’s book, Candle Love Feast. She was 93 at the time! She moved to Davey County then to live with her son and daughter-in-law. Julia Lilly lived to the fine old age of 95 and received the North Carolina Society of Historians: Historian of the Year (West) award posthumously.

So, Dr. And Mrs. Street lived a quiet and quite wonderful WinstonSalem life! Helping others and raising a family was what they were all about. 545 Oaklawn Avenue was a very special place indeed.

For the Love of a Pet Growing up, my sister and I had a number of pets. Our first was a parakeet—which really belonged to my sister, as I was a toddler when she got him. She named him Tweetie, and he was amazing. I remember him fondly, beginning from when I was about three years old. My sister let him out of his cage occasionally to fly around her room. One lovely spring day, her window had been opened from the top and, with no screen, Tweetie took to the sky.

Horrified, my sister, with me in tow, ran down the stairs and out the back door calling his name. My parents, who were also fond of this bird, but mainly to placate us, put ads up around the neighborhood and in the newspaper, assuming nothing would come from it. Imagine their surprise when a woman called, saying she thought she might have our parakeet. We had taught him to talk, and he had landed on her shoulder while she was out in her yard talking to a neighbor, and clear as could be Tweetie said, “Whatcha doing?” Fortunately, she also had a parakeet and took him inside and put him into the cage. I am not sure who was more stunned—the woman to have a talking bird land on her, or my parents that he was found.

Tweetie lived a long life, keeping us amused with his everexpanding vocabulary.

Throughout his life, and beyond, a myriad of pets enriched our lives. With each, it was our responsibility to see to their various needs. Sometimes it took a gentle reminder to us to make sure they were fed on time, a cage was cleaned, or their water was fresh. The responsibility of a pet impacts many aspects of your life.

Our daughters never experienced a home without a pet.

There have been fish, birds and hamsters at different times, but the one constant is there has always been at least one dog. Having a pet teaches children so many valuable lessons. Not only do they learn responsibility, they also learn about care, training, compassion, relationships, and, unfortunately, the pain of losing a cherished friend.

My family has long been advocates of adopting rescue dogs. Each one has easily assimilated into their new surroundings, giving them the life they deserve and joy to their new owners. They always seem to know they have been rescued and are now safe, well taken care of, and loved. These pets always give of themselves in their trust and loyalty. When one crosses the rainbow bridge, we have lost more than a pet, we have lost a member of our family.

As grandparents, we feel that teaching children about pets should come from their parents. If it is not an option for them to have an animal that needs more care, such as a dog or cat, they can still learn about pet responsibility with a fish or hamster. If you own a pet, they can watch you interact with yours and see how they are well treated and cared for. Two of my grandchildren have a dog, cat, and gerbil. They not only snuggle and play with them, but at ages 4 and 7, they feed them, make sure they have water, take the dog outside, and, as the dog is still a puppy, work on reinforcing certain training skills.

Summer is usually a good time to adopt a pet. The weather is conducive to house training and getting in walks. With school out, it allows the children time to bond with the new family member and know what is expected of them in caring for the new pet. Usually, summer means vacation time, but as this has been a strange year, this might not be the case. A well-behaved dog will make the pet experience the best. There are a number of training options available that can help with this. Children would benefit from attending the sessions with a parent, so they can reinforce the training at home.

If a dog or cat is in your grandchild’s future, please strongly consider adopting a rescue. You not only save a life, but are rewarded with loyalty and love, as well.

with the Kaleidoscope Ball (Virtually) in Winston-Salem

Unusual

times call for creative thinking and collaboration. These skills were paramount this past spring when COVID-19 closed both Kaleideum locations and put a stop to large gatherings, thus halting Kaleideum’s primary fundraiser: The Kaleidoscope Ball.

“The Kaleidoscope Ball is our largest fundraiser each year with funds going to our annual fund, which directly supports Kaleideum’s mission-based programming and exhibits,” says Elizabeth Dampier, Kaleideum’s Executive Director.

The original ball was scheduled in late March as a 300-person gathering with dinner, music, silent and live auctions, and more. “We knew the traditional event wasn’t going to be possible, so we brainstormed with our Board of Directors and our committee members to figure out what would work best,” says Mimi Bennett, Director of the Annual Fund.

The end result was a seven-day Virtual Kaleidoscope Ball with videos, social media posts, and e-mails each day that highlighted silent auction items, a raffle for a lifetime membership, and a long-time favorite: The Whiskey Wall, a fixed-price purchase option that sold out in the first two days.

“The event started on a Sunday, and there was a lot of bidding at the beginning of the week,” Bennett says. “Things slowed down a little and then picked up again at the end of the week, culminating in some frantic bidding on Saturday evening. Some people who had watched and waited all week swooped in at the last minute and got their items!”

The co-chairs for this year’s event were Lisa and John Boisture and Bethany and Houston Symmes. The Honorary Chairs were Marie and Guy Arcuri. With the virtual ball allowing people to log in from their armchairs at home, more people were able to participate in the Kaleidoscope Ball; in fact, more than 330 people registered for the weeklong event. “Many people made it a point to tell me that they liked the virtual format, and it allowed them to get their children involved,” Bennett says.

While the planning and execution of the Virtual Kaleidoscope Ball was fun, the Kaleideum team is looking forward to returning to a new normal.

“Covid has had a significant impact on Kaleideum. The museum has been closed since March 15, and our earned income from admission, memberships, and events has been dramatically reduced during our busiest season,” says Elizabeth Dampier, Executive Director. “The team had to pivot very quickly to providing virtual experiences during the closure while simultaneously preparing our reopening plan that included increased cleaning and sanitation, as well as new policies and procedures for day camps and regular visitation. Community support matters more than ever now, and we are so happy that the Virtual Kaleidoscope Ball proved to be a success.”

Silver Linings in the “Now Normal”

It

was a warm, peaceful morning in late August, 2019—you know, those mornings when the season is slowly changing from summertime heat 24/7 to balmy early autumn mornings, paired with excruciatingly hot NC Piedmont afternoons when everything feels rushed and sluggish all at the same time? When the birds’ morning songs change slightly to a note of sadness because they know they’ll be leaving soon.

I was sipping my first cup of coffee, enjoying a bit of quiet time, when I had a tugging feeling I should probably take the test. I hadn’t noticed any typical signs, but in my heart, just as with my first pregnancy, I knew I was carrying a child, but never sensed the timing was right for a valid result. My daughter, then 17 months old, was still blissfully sleeping, unaware of how her life would change in months to come.

Confirmed—pregnant with our second child! Something my husband and I had hoped for, and if my calculations were correct, we would be expecting another April baby. April, what a great month!

Springtime, everything is new; the earth is coming alive again and waking from her winter slumber.

Fast forward several months. Everything has gone incredibly smoothly and right on track, with our biggest problem being who can get to our house the quickest to watch

our daughter when I go into labor…well, that was our biggest problem…until the end of March.

When the quarantine began, I honestly believed our daily routines would pick back up after two weeks of being home, but clearly, that has not been the case.

Here we are, still physically distancing ourselves from people and places we love. I suppose my naive, optimistic expectations were that Americans would see the toll COVID-19 had taken on Europe, and we would have a different outcome. Boy, was I wrong.

Our “Now Normal” (y’all, I refuse to call it our “new normal,” this is not normal—it’s our current reality) is sheltering in place, only going out for essential visits, and feeling like we’re walking around in a SciFi movie.

I am currently full term and could quite literally have a baby any day now. I have felt all the feelings and I have felt them separately and all at once.

I’m grieving about the fact that I probably will not get to deliver this child the way I wanted—see ya, birth plan (which, okay, let’s be honest…birth plans rarely go as desired, but I wasn’t really expecting to have to schedule a C-Section “just in case” I go past my due date, either). I’m still worried about who will take care of my

daughter. Our closest family is an hour away and are on the front lines of this pandemic as essential healthcare workers (or living with said essential healthcare workers), so truly self-quarantine, they cannot. I’m sad that aunts, uncles, and cousins won’t get to meet this little love until all this is over. I’m excited about bringing a child into the world who will deliver so much joy and love during this crazy, uncertain time. And who will remind us that through it all, there is always hope.

I’m thankful that my husband is able to work from home during this pandemic and also gets paternity leave—what a blessing!

I’m anxious about what the hospital will be like at the time of my delivery, but know we will be safe and that our health is our doctors’/nurses’ priority. (Huge shoutout to all the healthcare workers sacrificing each and every day.)

I’m striving to find peace with it all, coping in ways I know how to cope. Leaning on my husband. Crying when I need to.

Savoring all my daughter’s hugs, kisses, and “I love you, mommy”s.

Controlling what I can.

Letting go of what I cannot.

I will not be the first woman to give birth during this pandemic, and I certainly won’t be the last. I am not alone, and I find peace and comfort in knowing that.

Strawberry Bounty

STRAWBERRY LEMONADE BLONDIES INGREDIENTS: 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature ¾ cup sugar 1 large egg ¼ cup lemon juice, fresh 1¼ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1 cup fresh strawberries, diced (can also substitute blueberries or add rhubarb) GLAZE: 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted 2 large strawberries puréed 1 Tbsp. lemon juice, fresh

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, with edges extended for lifting out of pan later.

2. In a medium mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in the egg. When mixed well, beat in the lemon juice (may not mix well, but that’s fine).

3. In separate small mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. Add to the wet ingredients and mix well.

4. Gently fold in the diced strawberries and spread evenly into pan.

5. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until slightly golden on the edges and center is set. A toothpick inserted in center should be moist but not wet.

Do not over-bake or they will be dry. Cool on cooling rack.

6. For the glaze, purée the strawberries in food processor. Strain with a small strainer to get roughly 1 Tbsp. of purée. Whisk together with powdered sugar and lemon juice until no lumps remain. If the glaze is too thick, add a little more lemon juice. If too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.

7. Spread the glaze over the cooled blondies and let set before slicing.

STRAWBERRY PRETZEL “SALAD”

EASY STRAWBERRY FREEZER JAM

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

CRUST: 2 cups pretzels, crushed ¾ cup butter, melted 3 Tbsp. sugar FILLING: 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 8 oz. whipped topping 1 cup sugar TOPPING: 3 oz. strawberry flavor Jell-o 2 cups boiling water 10 oz. fresh strawberries

1 (1.75 oz. box) Sure-Jell Fruit Pectin 2 cups fresh strawberries, crushed 4 cups white sugar TOOLS: Large bowl with pour spout OR funnel 6 (8 oz.) jelly jars, or 12 (4-oz.) jelly jars, or plastic freezer jam jars Blender

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. I n a medium bowl, combine crushed pretzels, sugar and melted butter.

Using fingers, press the pretzel mixture into the bottom of a 9x13” pan (glass if your have it!).

3. B ake for 10 minutes, or until pretzel layer is lightly toasted. Set aside to cool completely.

4. In a medium bowl, beat the sugar and cream cheese until smooth. Fold in whipped topping and mix well.

Spread evenly over pretzel base.

5. R efrigerate until set, about 30 minutes.

6. I n a medium bowl, whisk together gelatin mixture and boiling water.

Once gelatin is dissolved, add strawberries. Refrigerate 5 minutes.

7. P our gelatin mixture over the chilled cream cheese layer. Refrigerate until completely chilled, at least 1 hour.

8. O ptional—decorate each sliced square with a swirl or dollop of whipped topping, with a strawberry on top.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the clean, capped strawberries into the blender and blend to your desired jam consistency (chunky or smooth).

2. Pour the blended 2 cups (exactly) of strawberries into the mixing bowl with pour spout and stir in (exactly) 4 cups sugar. Let sit 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Once strawberry mixture has sat 5 minutes, in a saucepan, add ¾ cup water, stir in pectin and stir until it boils. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. After 1 minute of boiling, remove from stove and immediately pour into strawberry mixture. Stir continually until the jam begins to thicken, about 3 minutes.

4. Carefully fill the jelly jars, using the pour spout on the mixing bowl or a funnel. Leave ½-inch space at the top for expansion.

Place lid on jars.

5. Let the filled jars sit at room temperature 24 hours and then place in freezer. Jam lasts 1 year in freezer. Before serving, place jam in refrigerator. Jam lasts 3 weeks in refrigerator.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

Atlanta, July 27, 1996

With

the absence of the XXXII Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, this month (postponed to begin July 23rd, 2021, due to the coronavirus), I was reflecting on the time my wife and I attended the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, in July of 1996. I kept copious notes after that experience, so I’d remember it all. The following is a portion of information from those notes.

It’s Thursday, July 25th, 1996, and my wife and I are headed down to Hotlanta for what should be an incredible experience. When we arrive at Peachtree Street in the heart of Atlanta, the crowds are the largest we’ve ever seen in a setting like this. We make our way on foot downtown to Centennial Park and the Global Olympic Village, the centerpiece of the Olympic experience for fans. A place where citizens of the world mingle together, children play in the Olympic rings water show and fountain, and popular musical guests perform on the main stage each day. There are also plenty of food and drink choices, and fans enjoy the games on huge screens.

When we arrived it was awesome!

Though crowded, everyone was in a festive mood. People traded Olympic pins; yes, I got in on the action, obtaining some nice souvenirs from around the globe and a chance to meet lots of different people. We also visited Coca-Cola Olympic City, Nike World, the CNN building, and more.

The next day, Friday, was even more exciting, visiting the Olympic Stadium for the track and field events and taking pictures in front of the torch. Transportation wasn’t bad; we took a cab from our hotel to the Marta (subway) which would take us everywhere. After the event, we made our way back to Centennial Park for dinner before heading to the Georgia Dome to see the Dream Team II play China in men’s basketball action. The U.S. won 133-70.

After the game, we had a choice to make. Do we go back to Centennial Park and listen to the band—Jack Black and the Heart Attacks—or do we go to Atlanta’s Underground for the evening’s entertainment? This would become the monumental decision we made. After a long day in the heat, we chose Kenny’s Alley in the Underground, so we could sit back, relax in large wooden rocking chairs, listen to the bands play, and people-watch from the balcony of the restaurant we dined in. The evening was

going perfectly. Friday soon turned into early Saturday morning, July 27th. We were heading back home Saturday, so we stayed late to enjoy the party. Little did we know things were about to change abruptly.

At approximately 2:15 a.m., an announcement was made for everyone to clear the area. The first sign for us of what had occurred nearby. We were unaware at this point that officials were concerned for the safety of those in the Underground.

Police officers calmly but firmly informed us to leave immediately.

Thinking they were just closing down for the night, we left.

As we walked the sidewalk, we passed an outdoor stage when I overheard a stage-hand describing what had taken place just a small distance away at Global Olympic Village a short time earlier. He mentioned seeing a flash of light and hearing an explosion. When I stopped suddenly and asked about it, he responded, “There’s been a bomb explosion in Centennial Park.” I turned to my wife, our eyes met and nothing was said, we just made our way towards the Marta quickly. I was afraid the Marta would be next, but it was our only option to get out of the city.

The subway car we entered was empty except for two young men from Indiana.

They had worked security at Centennial Park that evening and left just before the explosion. They described what it was like, saying the mood late was strange, with FBI Agents walking around and watching from the rooftops. He said he hadn’t been told anything before they had finished their shift, so they didn’t know there had been a threat made. We reached our stop and exited, taking a cab back to the hotel. We couldn’t get one near the Park area because the roads were blocked for emergency vehicles. Along the way, our driver listened to Tom Brokaw report the tragic news on the radio.

When we arrived back at the hotel, the desk clerk had seen the news and looked sad for her city. She even apologized to us.

We left early Saturday, knowing everything would shut down immediately around the Olympics. Our most memorable trip had an equally memorable ending. I felt very fortunate we had been elsewhere during the explosion, but I also felt sad. What was once a festive place had now become a place of fear. However, it wouldn’t take away the happy memories we shared. It was still the best party I’ve ever been a part of, because the world was invited.

They wanted to create a place with a fun atmosphere and excellent food that the community of Clemmons would really enjoy, and that is exactly what they did.

Mossy’s Eats, Ales, & Spirits in Clemmons is a unique, family-friendly, sports restaurant with a great bar and fresh menu that keeps guests coming back for more.

FOOD The food at Mossy’s is second to none.

They focus on fresh comfort food and serve it consistently. Soups, salad dressings, and desserts are all made fresh and from scratch, in house. There are a variety of appetizers on the menu that range from cod bites and Thai chili shrimp to nachos supreme and mozzarella sticks.

Guests love the freshly made pizzas, buffalo bites, and wings. You can choose from several different sandwiches and burgers that will make your mouth water.

The most popular items on the menu are the buffalo chicken wrap and the fresh salmon. You really can’t go wrong with any of the menu items. They are thoughtfully prepared and absolutely delicious.

DRINKS The bar at Mossy’s is just as impressive as the menu. They have 23 taps and a variety of craft beers. The signature cocktail menu is a

guest favorite, with the mules, margaritas, and mojitos being the stand-out items.

They also have a great variety of fun martinis, with the most popular one being the lemon-drop martini. This drink is a delicious concoction of Absolut Citron vodka, Triple Sec, sour mix, and Mist Twist. They give the glass a sugar rim to finish it off, and it is perfection.

ENTERTAINMENT AND SPECIALS If you are looking for a place to watch your favorite game, Mossy’s is the place for you. With 33 HD TVs and all the sports packages, you can enjoy just about any game you can imagine. On Tuesday nights, Mossy’s is the place to be for team trivia. Tuesdays are also the day you can get $3.50 craft drafts. Other drink specials include $4 wine by the glass on Thursdays and $4 Bloody Marys and Screwdrivers on Sundays. You can also enjoy a great outdoor patio that is open year-round.

One of the things that really sets Mossy’s apart is the atmosphere. This a local restaurant that is a part of the community and you can feel that when you walk in. Neighbors Helping Neighbors Forsyth County First Responders Raise Money for Our Neighbors in Crisis

The

Second Annual Battle of the Badges Softball Tournament is a family-friendly sporting event which will be held Saturday, July 11, 2020, from 8:30 AM to 8 PM at the David Couch Ballpark, 401 Deacon Blvd., Winston-Salem. The Winston-Salem Police Department “Peacekeepers,” the WinstonSalem Fire Department “Overhaulers,” and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office “Enforcers,” will compete to raise money for Crisis Control Ministry.

“The tournament is a great way for us to forge a partnership with each other and support Crisis Control Ministry who, for decades, has provided a much-needed service within our community,” said Corporal Brad Mullins.

There will be a silent auction at the tournament to help raise money. Silent auction items include sporting experiences, sports memorabilia, family outings, and more. In addition, this year’s grand prize raffle is a 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500LT Crew Cab from Modern Chevrolet, one of the tournament sponsors. Raffle tickets are $100 each. Only 1500 raffle tickets are available. You can purchase a raffle ticket online at https:// www.crisiscontrol.org.

Admission to the event is three donations per person. Acceptable donations include non-perishable food, over-the-counter medications, cleaning products, or personal hygiene items. These items will go to support Crisis Control Ministry’s food pantries and its licensed free pharmacy.
