Handy & Handy Orthodontics is our cover story this month. Dr. Gordon Handy and his wife Holly share their very personal story of their baby daughter Marie Claire. At their office photoshoot, Dr. Gordon shared a very positive report from the doctor that the tumor has shrunk and feels good that it will shrink to a very small benign mass. God surely has his hand on their family as they face this health crisis.

Having recently battled breast cancer myself I know full well the angst that comes with a diagnosis of the “C” word but that could never compare with hearing the words that your child is sick with cancer. As parents we try to protect our children from every possible harm but this is one harm out of our control. Let’s cover this family with prayers for continued healing and encircle them with love during this difficult time.

Summer should be in full swing by now. Picnics, outdoor concerts, swimming pools and 4th of July fireworks will soon light up the nighttime sky! It took its sweet time getting here this year but it’s already zipping by at lightning speed so I’m trying my best to soak up every single moment of it I can!

As I write this, we are traveling back from a wonderful visit with our daughter who is in grad school at ECU. I had the bright idea to power wash and stain her fence on Father’s Day weekend. Yes, I know, crazy and I feel sure my husband won’t let me live that down for awhile! That’s the hardest I’ve worked for two solid days in a very long time but the finished project was very gratifying and will hopefully preserve the fence from harsh Greenville summers!

Many thanks to my brother for the use of his power washer! Oh and by the way, don’t trust those paint cans estimation on coverage. According to the instructions we needed three cans. Ten cans later, it was done! We’re tackling several projects around the house this summer at the Bralley house but squeezing in lots of fun as well. I hope you have a fun summer planned for your family. Launches Campaign to Preserve Land

who has spent time near the Reynolda Road area knows how beautiful the land around Crossnore School & Children’s Home is and how nice it is that it has remained untouched by commercial development through the years.

With the help of the Piedmont Land Conservancy (PLC), the hope that it will be preserved for all the years still to come is within reach!

Kevin Redding, the executive director of the PLC, is at the forefront of this endeavor. “I’ve been the Executive Director for 11 years,” said Redding.

“PLC was founded in 1990 to protect important lands throughout our ninecounty region. To date, we’ve conserved more than 26,000 acres. PLC’s mission is to protect our region’s natural lands, farms and waters for present and future generations; we connect people to nature.”

The land in question has been used for educational and recreational purposes for years, and the benefits it creates

for the children who enjoy it and the community who lives beside it are immeasurable. “We’ve been having conversations with the Crossnore School & Children’s Home, then The Children’s Home, for about five years,” explained Redding. “There was a large outcry back then about the cows being taken off the property because of financial issues. We reached out just to get a better understanding of what was going on. Those conversations continued and have evolved into this once-in-a-generation opportunity.”

This opportunity requires help from the community to come to fruition.

“PLC is launching an $8 million capital campaign to cover the cost of purchasing the conservation easement,” said Redding. “For the remainder of 2018, we are working primarily with private individuals. We will be involving local corporations and foundations in early 2019. This is not a done deal. We have to raise a substantial amount of money to complete the transaction.

The land is very special, and the hope is for it to continue to be used the way it has always been used. “Many generations have treasured this land,” declared Redding. “Those same generations have also always wondered how long that treasured landscape could elude the risk of development.

If successful, this project will put those concerns to rest. The land will remain an iconic, greatly valued part of WinstonSalem in perpetuity. Crossnore will continue to own the land. They will continue its use for farming, educational and recreational uses. Probably the biggest change will be the construction of a public walking trail. This will give citizens a better chance to visit the property, exercise and take in some of the incredible views. The Crossnore property is one of the unique pieces of land in North Carolina.” Let’s make sure it stays that way!

1985, Chick-fil-A founder and long-time avid community leader, Truett Cathy, established the WinShape Foundation and Camps as a hopeful means of inspiring children with such engaging summer camp adventures that the time spent would literally change their lives.

Since then, WinShape Camps have taken off across the nation, providing lucky participants with more than just your typical camp routine. This truly one-of-akind day camp experience is an immensely rewarding adventure, and thankfully, it is again offered this summer in WinstonSalem for kids having completed the first through ninth grades. While encompassing worship, leadership-building, and a variety of skills training, WinShape Camps also unite area churches and other local groups in a common goal: inspiring local youth to reach for the stars!

Changing lives this very summer—while also creating lifelong memories—the camp will be held August 6th-10th at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in WinstonSalem, with regular camp days from Monday through Thursday, and Chick-fil-A Family Fun Day on Friday of that week to celebrate accomplishments and establish camaraderie. Now in its fourth year in Winston-Salem, WinShape Camp is very much a community endeavor, with partial scholarships available, and local leaders recognize its value for all who are involved.

“The WinShape organization is built on excellence, and offers a first-class camp experience to all participants,” maintains Jade Costen, representing the Chick-fil-A at Thruway Shopping Center. “It is an honor to partner with such a high-caliber operation. Every year WinShape has been in Winston-Salem, the entire community has benefitted.”

While making new friends and experiencing Christian love through Bible study and daily, positive interaction, campers are also learning to recognize— and grow—their own leadership skills.

With daily encouragement from everyone involved in the camp experience, and a positive worship setting to strengthen their faith, participants feel their self-esteem and

confidence increasing with each day, and their imaginations simply soaring! Through activities such as archery, basketball, cheerleading, gymnastics, soccer, lacrosse, music, painting, and other crafts—all designed for various age and skill levels— everyone is given a chance to explore their own strengths and interests, part of the amazing overall week-long experience.

For Chuck Spong, Executive Director of Love Out Loud and Christmas for the City, it’s important to praise the camp’s mission of uniting community across all lines—whether racial, socio-economic, or generational. “WinShape Camps are one of those chances for both campers and volunteers to come together,” he explains.

in Winston-Salem with WS Cycling Classic

Memorial Day weekend, Winston-Salem was the center of the biking world. Professional cyclists from around the globe converged on our city for the 6thannual Winston-Salem Cycling Classic Race, one of the country’s most prestigious professional cycling events. The Classic has become an annual tradition in Winston-Salem, drawing thousands of fans to the festivities downtown and throughout the neighborhoods of Winston-Salem. The weather forecast of significant rains did not dampen the spirits of participants or attendees. There were Criterium races on Saturday; the 58-Mile Gran Fondo and 31-Mile Gran Fundo races, sponsored by Flow BMW, on Sunday; the road races on Monday; and numerous family-friendly activities throughout the weekend, such as the Gears and Guitars concerts (“The Biggest Party on Two Wheels!”) and the Crumley Roberts Kid Zone.

On Monday the road race course wound out of downtown and into the neighborhoods of Winston-Salem. First came the Winston-Salem Police Department vehicles to make sure the course is clear, followed by the WSPD Motorcycle Police, leading the peloton of bicyclists and the film crew riding beside the peloton, comprised of dozens of racers.

Then came the chase cars for every team. loaded with extra bicycle equipment and painted with the sponsors’ logos.

Finally, the EMS (in the event of an accident) completed the procession, which came through repeatedly over an almost three-hour period for the women’s race, and an almost fourhour period for the men’s race.

Monday’s weather forecast was for rainy weather. Yet in neighborhoods throughout Winston-Salem, people came to the streets starting in the morning to see the women’s and men’s road races. The rain held off for most of the day, and the road races were an exciting spectacle. The races created a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to socialize as the racers lapped the course. Each time the racers approached, the sound of bells and the yells of fans signaled that the peloton was about to arrive.

Young children often rode their bikes on the sidewalk, “racing” the racers! The Classic provided a true family-friendly “staycation” for the Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks to the help of many community-minded businesses and volunteers, and Winston-Salem Cycling, we are fortunate to host this world-class cycling event.

Things You Can Do With Your Children This Summer to Learn About Poverty and Hunger GWEN FRISBIE-FULTON 1. Talk to your children about poverty. According to Forsyth Futures, the poverty rate in this county has generally been increasing since 2006 and levels of economic mobility remain very low. For younger children, a good way to introduce issues of hunger and poverty is through picture books. We recommend Maddi’s Fridge by Lois Brandt, Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen by DyAnn DiSalvo, and One Potato, Two Potato by Cynthia DeFelice.

2. Teach your children to take action about what they have learned. Conduct a food drive in your neighborhood, collecting healthful non-perishable food for families in need. Food drives are a great way to teach our children about giving, but also about the food groups and healthful eating. You can talk to your children about why all people need and deserve nutritious food. Second Harvest Food Bank has great materials on the website about the best foods to donate.

3. Take a family food waste challenge. 40% of food produced in this country (nearly half!) goes to waste. Food is wasted at every point along the food chain, from farms and fishing boats to processing and distribution, to retail stores and restaurants, and even at home.

Edible, quality food should never be destined for the trash can! From the grocery store to the cutting board to the fridge, we can cut back on food waste in our homes. Talk to your family about food waste and set goals to reduce the food that ends up uneaten in your home.

4. Roll up your shirt sleeves and volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to get your children involved in the community and open their hearts to the needs of others. Families with children over the age of 12 can volunteer in the Second Harvest Food Bank warehouses, helping to inspect and sort reclaimed and donated food. Families with younger children can help out at the Jim and Betty Holmes Food Bank Garden, watering, weeding and harvesting fresh food for families in need. Second Harvest’s large network of partner programs is also frequently looking for volunteers. To find out more about these opportunities, visit hungernwnc.org.

5. Bring it home. Most of us, no matter where we live, live close to families experiencing poverty. Whether they are in our own families and neighborhoods, or if they are working at a local store where we shop, every day we interact with people struggling to make ends meet. Chances are, your children go to school with kids who come from families that are food insecure. When the back-to-school time draws closer, contact your school to see if they have a BackPack program, and ask if there are any special back-to-school needs that your children’s peers may have. Remind your children that kids who are food insecure are likely also facing other unmet needs.

Sometimes giving close to home helps not only to change the lives of others, but to change our own lives as well.

Playgrounds for All:

A Guide to All-Inclusive Playgrounds in the Piedmont Triad

Many

people have memories of being on the playground when they were a child. The moments of joy as you come down the slide or feel like a bird soaring when you are on the swings bring a smile to anyone’s face. Now, thanks to the help of people in the community, children with special needs will be able to savor the fun playground memories, as well.

Several all-inclusive playgrounds have recently popped up around the Piedmont Triad. These recreational areas include special equipment that is tailored for children with special needs. An example of these features are a wheelchair swing, sensory activities, and enhanced safety measures. Within our area, all-inclusive playgrounds are located in Kernersville, King, and Greensboro. Each has unique features and are enjoyed by many families every day.

FREEDOM PLAYGROUND IN KERNERSVILLE:

Located in the Fourth of July Park, the Freedom Playground replaces the old playground and includes swings for parents and children to enjoy together, play rubber instead of mulch, and wheelchair ramps for the equipment. All of these changes and more allow for children with disabilities to move around the playground easily, while helping to prevent injuries. Also, throughout the park,

inclusive play objects are available for kids to love.

Along the walking paths, there are bongo drums and xylophones for children with an attention deficit disorder. Lastly, wheelchair pathways have been added, allowing for easier access to various areas in the park, such as the picnic shelters.

Freedom Playground in the Fourth of July Park is located at 702 W. Mountain Street in Kernersville.

RECREATION ACRES PARK IN KING:

Just like the playgrounds in Kernersville and Greensboro, King’s all-inclusive playground was built with the love of the community. This playground features more than two dozen new features, including therapeutic swings, wheelchair swing, wheelchair-accessible entrance ramps, sensory items, and a wheelchair- usable merry-go-round. This project was led by the nonprofit “Make a Difference” in King. This organization took dream playground designs from local students and transformed them into a reality. Along with area businesses, community members in King came together for a build day in April 2017. According to the organization’s website, the day was spent creating the “first all-inclusivecommunity built playground” in Stokes County.

Recreation Acres Park is located at W. Dalton Road and White Road in King.

PROEHLIFIC PARK IN GREENSBORO:

Plans are in the works for a new all-inclusive playground at Proehlific Park. According to the playground’s campaign website, the “Play without Limits” playground will be the first all-inclusive playground in Greensboro’s SCAT bus system. Former NFL player Ricky Proehl is spearheading the vision. His organization, the “Ricky Proehl P.O.W.E.R. of Play Foundation” is working closely with the community to raise funds for the project and creating a place that is enjoyable for all children. TRANSPORTING Rescue Animals

These

days, “miles apart” seem much less a deterrent than in years gone by. With all the social media websites for meeting, dating, keeping in contact with friends and family, it’s more than reasonable to expect that distance no longer keeps fur-babies away from those who want to adopt them. All you need to do is key in “transporting rescue animals,” and all sorts of options show up.

Certainly, local rescue shelters and those nearby are more than likely first options for those wanting to adopt a rescue pet into their family.

However, if the right match isn’t found, then looking at other parts of the country is a viable option. Folks who give their time transporting animals from one part of the country to another make that possible.

Nick Jongebloed, a local entrepreneur, has been transporting dogs for the past ten years. His canine family is comprised of rescues, so he knows the value these animals give and the joy that comes from rescuing animals who just want to be part of a loving family. Ava, his German Shepherd dog, was originally going to be fostered, but made herself a home with him, along with a Sheltie he found at a collie rescue center; Otis, a Jack Russell found at the humane society, who has a mind of his own; and Peaches, a terrier-type mix who was found wandering on a street in Georgia.

With his family of fur-babies settled in, Nick became part of a fairly sophisticated network of volunteers who help transport dogs and cats to give them a chance for a better life—to nokill shelters or to their adoptive families. Nick is one of 3,643 members in the North Carolina Transport Group, whose purpose is ensuring safe transport for these animals. These trips are coordinated by a dedicated group who map the routes so that each driver typically drives about an hour, transporting dogs and cats to the next leg of their trip and ultimately to a safe adoptive environment.

Nick shared that his flexible work schedule makes it possible for him to transport animals once or twice a month; twice a month is his personal goal. He may be carrying one or even four dogs to multiple destinations.

The guidelines for the animals’ safety are quite stringent. All animals are double-leashed and are generally crated individually. Each has paperwork from a veterinarian confirming their health and wellbeing. Puppies get special consideration due to their age and need to be protected, as they may not have had all their vaccinations.

“For me, the hour or so that I spend with these dogs is magical.

These animals typically come from situations that were not only frightening and confusing; they may have been scheduled for termination. Yet, they quickly trust us, and I am happy to earn that trust,” Nick explained. “I am a link in a chain of volunteer drivers, all part of a larger effort by selfless rescue organizations. The organizations and their volunteers identify dogs in need, the conditions where the dog will be safe, and then coordinate the volunteer drivers to get the dogs to safety. I am blessed to be a link in a chain that ultimately does so much good.”

Dogs who have been part of the transport system have been in the news lately. Duchess Meghan’s Beagle, Guy, was once part of a transport. Perhaps you recall the photo that made the evening news of Guy riding beside Queen Elizabeth in her Rolls. Imagine those transport drivers who can now say they were part of his rescue? If a rescue dog can win over the Queen, imagine what impact they can have on us?

You may wonder what you need to be part of a rescue/transport group. Basically, a love of dogs and cats and the time once or twice a month to take a drive is all that is necessary.

But, it’s up to you to decide how much debt you can comfortably afford to take on, regardless of what the lender says.

How can I lower my DTI ratio?

There are two ways to lower your DTI. You can either increase your income or reduce your debt. Or, for faster results, do both. Here’s how to get started: • Consider making more than your minimum monthly payments on your current debts. Not only will this help you pay off your balances faster, it may also reduce the amount of interest you pay over the life of your loans.

Why Your Debt-to-Income Ratio Matters Total household debt in the U.S. reached an all-time high of $13.21 trillion in the first quarter of 2018, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Center for Microeconomic Data.

As consumers rack up more debt each year, it’s important for individuals to keep an eye on their debt-to-income (DTI) ratio to ensure they’re spending responsibly.

What is a DTI ratio?

Your DTI ratio measures how much debt you carry compared to your gross monthly income. It’s an indicator of your overall financial health. A high DTI suggests you’re spending too much relative to what you earn. And a low ratio suggests you have a healthy balance of debt and income.

• Review your expenses. Identify items you can eliminate from your budget and areas where you can cut back until your financial situation improves. Use the money you save to pay off existing debt.

• Consider getting a debt consolidation loan. Combining multiple debts into a single monthly payment, often at a lower interest rate, can quickly save you money. You can often extend the term of the repayment, further lowering your monthly commitment since it is spread out over a longer term. This could cause you to pay more money in interest in the long term, because you will have the outstanding debts for longer. But you could improve your ability to incur additional debts because you have greater cash flow and a lower DTI.

The ratio is calculated by adding up your recurring monthly debt payments and dividing the total by your gross monthly income.

Examples of debt payments used in the calculation include monthly payments for mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, student loans, child support, alimony and more. It does not include monthly expenses such as groceries, utilities and phone bills.

A variety of factors are used to calculate your credit score. Your DTI ratio isn’t one of them, so it won’t directly impact your credit scores.

But, because of the way scores are calculated, the amount of debt you carry can indirectly affect your score.

Your gross monthly income is the total amount of money you earn each month before taxes and other deductions (retirement, health insurance, etc.) are withdrawn from your paycheck.

For example, if your gross monthly income is $5,000/month, and you pay $1,200/month for your mortgage, $250/month for your auto loan and $300/month for your remaining debt, then your DTI ratio is 35% ($1,200+$250+$300 = $1,750/$5,000 = .35 or 35%).

It’s also important to note that the amount is based on your minimum required payments due, not the payments you actually make each month.

Why does my DTI ratio matter?

DTI is one criteria lenders consider when deciding whether to approve you for a loan or line of credit. It’s used in conjunction with other factors to measure your ability to repay your debt.

Most lenders require a DTI of less than 45% to get a qualified mortgage – one with federally defined attributes designed to

For example, if you have a high DTI ratio, there’s a good chance your unpaid debt and the amount of available credit you’re using is also high. These factors could negatively impact your credit score.

humble ice cube tray may be one

of the most underutilized tools in your kitchen.

There are dozens of ideas to use ice cube trays—whether for culinary

purposes or other areas of the home. Consider a few of these ideas.

IN THE KITCHEN • Freeze leftover coffee (if there is such a thing) to enjoy iced coffee this summer.

• Freeze fruit and vegetable puree to add to smoothies, making the process much easier on busy mornings.

• Freeze fruit in regular ice cubes for a little extra flavor in your water.

• Make and freeze homemade baby food in perfect portions for little tummies!

• For toddlers who have food-touchingfood issues, serve a meal or snack out of a large ice cube tray.

• Freeze fresh herbs in olive oil or broth for future use.

• Press avocado into ice cube trays— perfect for avocado lovers who can’t eat them fast enough!

TINY BITES • Make frozen yogurt bites with fruit, nuts, and, of course—yogurt.

• Perfectly portioned cookie dough makes homemade cookies an option any time!

• Mini-popsicles!

• Frozen aloe vera cubes will offer great relief after too much time in the sun.

HOMEMADE DISHWASHER TABLETS 2 cups washing soda or baking soda 2 cups borax ½ cup coarse salt or Epsom salt ½ cup vinegar 15-20 drops of lemon essential oil Mix the ingredients together and press into ice cube trays. Let them dry completely—at least 24 hours— before using.

SHOWER BOMBS 1 lb. of Baking Soda Spray bottle filled with water 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil 20 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil 1. Pour baking soda into a bowl.

Spray the baking soda with water, just enough to make it start to stick together.

2. Mix it up and see how well it forms in your hand. It should feel like damp sand.

• Who needs a paint palette if you have a spare ice cube tray?

3. If it is not moist enough, spray with water again until it easily sticks together, but does not feel wet, only damp and moist.

• Use trays to separate beads by size and color.

4. Add in your essential oil and mix again.

• Freeze some peanut butter mixed with a little water for a yummy frozen dog treat.

• Melt old broken crayons in the microwave and pour into ice cube trays for brand new crayons.

5. Press the mixture into ice cube trays.

• Freeze some sweet potato or pumpkin

• Store washi tape!

• Mini-no-bake cheesecakes are a great portion for end-of-meal sweet tooth cravings.

• Bite-size Jello treats the kids will love.

Orthodontics Gets Pretty (And God’s Little Miracles)

“But we did find something else,” the ER doctor at Brenner Children’s Hospital said. Words that no parent ever wants to hear. And words that mark the moment life will never be the same again.

This last year has been full of challenging life lessons for the Handy family, both in orthodontics and their personal family life. Holly and Gordon Handy welcomed the birth of their precious daughter, Marie Claire, on October 30th, 2017. They were ecstatic to be second-time parents after praying to be blessed with another child in God’s timing.

Their four-year-old son, Thomas, was so excited to finally get to be a big brother to his “baby sister.”

A CHALLENGING JOURNEY But little Marie Claire’s life was going to be a struggle: Code APGAR called for trouble breathing shortly after delivery; ten days in NICU for aspiration pneumonia; two ambulance trips to Brenner for severe coughing and inability to breathe; time again in the hospital for RSV; and the dreaded diagnosis of a childhood cancer called neuroblastoma.

It has been the trial of a lifetime for the Handy family.

New parents’ illusion of control shattered. The fragility and brevity of life in this world embodied in their newborn baby girl. The decision point reached in these Christian parents’ walks with God: they surrendered their daughter to God and made the decision that whether He healed her on this side of Heaven or the other, they were going to trust that His love for her was perfect and His will for her life would be accomplished.

Easily said, but not so easily done in the middle of the night, feeling scared and all alone on the oncology floor in Brenner Children’s Hospital.

GOD’S LITTLE MIRACLES After wise counsel by the pediatric oncologists at Brenner, prayer of their Calvary Baptist pastors and church family, and the prayers and support of friends and family all over the Southeast, Marie Claire just turned 8 months-old and is doing great! Praise be to Jesus, “the LORD who heals” (Exodus 15:26), her tumor is less than half the initial size and still shrinking.

There is nothing like a cancer diagnosis for a child to make a family stop and evaluate all areas of their lives and really assess who they are and what the purpose is for which they were blessed with life. The Handy family has grown closer to God and knows without a shadow of a doubt that He is the Giver of life, and their

main purpose in life is to bring Him glory by loving Him with all their hearts and loving and serving others in His name. They have learned the critical importance of being unified in marriage, an impregnable union for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. And they have experienced first-hand that their precious children are first and foremost God’s children, gifts to be stewarded and held with an open and trusting heart as God develops His plan for their lives.

ON MISSION Gordon Handy has found that the life lessons his family has learned during this challenging trial are applicable not only to personal, but also to his business life. A strong sense of purpose has served to confirm and put flesh on the bones of the Mission Statement of his and his father’s H2O orthodontic practice: “To bring glory to God by passionately living out and sharing Truth, Excellence, and Beauty...and always, always doing The Right Thing.”

“Between the nightly news stories, social media and all the competing voices in healthcare in America and even our own community right now, the water is getting muddy and patients understandably confused,” said Dr. Gordon Handy. “In our field, there is a huge amount of unnecessary and expensive early orthodontic treatment of children despite repeated research findings that the vast majority of these kids could be treated at the usual age of 11-12 years-old and get the exact same result. There is also a repackaging of the failed idea that all orthodontic cases should be treated without tooth extraction, even though it has been shown for over 100 years that this results in very poor treatment outcomes in about 20% of patients. Must-Have Ideas for Your Patriotic Festivities

Fourth of July is commonly associated with fireworks, barbeques, and parties. Planning events, especially for holidays, is one of my favorite things to do. If you are hosting a patriotic get-together that is going to be all red, white, and blue for July 4th, I’ve got some ideas you don’t want to miss.

DECORATIONS: When one thinks of decorations for a Fourth of July party, one probably automatically thinks of anything red, white, and blue. For tables, use a tablecloth that is either red-and-white checkered, blue-and-white checkered, or a plain color. Take it a step farther and use bandannas. All you need to do is sew together red, white, and blue bandannas, enough to cover your table or to make a table runner.

As for centerpieces, there are many options you can create. One example is using flowers in jars. Choose white flowers, such as daisies, and place in clear jars, filled with water. Using food color, tint the water in one container with red dye and another with blue.

This simple arrangement is just another way to include some patriotic zest to your party decorations.

Lastly, banners, bunting, and streamers are perfect additions for tables, ceilings, fences, and more.

Colorful fabric and paper can be used for the designs, and don’t forget about the flag—a must-have at any Fourth of July extravaganza!

FOOD: A party isn’t a party without tasty food! Offer your guests a wide variety of choices, from sweet and salty to healthy. Watermelon, bananas, strawberries, and blueberries are your go-to fruits. One of the cutest ways

to serve them is by crafting Fourth of July Fireworks Kabobs. First, take a star-shaped cookie cutter and cut out pieces of watermelon into stars.

Then, use a skewer and place the watermelon star on one end and follow up with blueberries. Another fun idea is utilizing fruit slices and making an American flag on a plate or serving tray.

A common staple at Fourth of July parties are hot dogs and hamburgers.

Staying with the fireworks theme for food, treat your family and friends to Firecracker Dogs. All you need to do is wrap uncooked crescent dough around a hot dog and cook until done.

Then, place onto a skewer with a starshaped piece of cheese on top.

Desserts and sweets are always a must, and s’mores are the perfect touch.

Want something cool to eat in the hot weather? Take ice cream sandwiches and roll the edges in red, white, and blue sprinkles. The key with food is for all dishes to be simple and easy to eat, whether you’re standing up or sitting down. You don’t need to have a full five-course meal, but you do need to make sure you have all parts of a meal available for guests. Remember always to include something fruity, something veggie, something sweet, something salty, and something hearty, such as a meat, and refreshments.

Lead your guests on a patriotic scavenger hunt. Some items to look for: a picnic basket, an American flag, something red, stars, streamers, and sparklers.

Since it is summer, include outdoor games. One suggestion would be to paint a twister board on the grass. Use the spinner from the board game and have fun. Also, host challenges, such as a watermelon or pie eating contest.

Attendees will love getting in on the party action. Plus, great memories will certainly be made!

PARTY FAVORS: Give your guests something to take home and remember the event. Many people like to hand out sparklers, but this can be a little tricky with multiple ages at the party. A creative idea is deconstructed s’mores in bags with a tag, commemorating the day. In addition, you could fill favor bags with candy that is red, white, and blue.

Some options are M&Ms, lollipops, and Hershey’s kisses.

The Fourth of July is a day full of fun.

occur just as quickly as swift action is required. As parents know, one of the simplest applications for the inflammation and swelling of a pulled muscle is an ice pack or a warm compress. The difficulty lies in knowing which situation calls for cold or hot, or a combination of both.

COLD

When injuries occur, the first action is to think of a numbing agent, which means a towel dampened with cold water or a cold compress. Cold will assist in relieving the pain by numbing the affected area, and potentially reducing swelling or inflammation, and bleeding.

TYPES OF APPLICATIONS • Chilled Towel: After dampening a towel with cold water, place it in a sealable bag and allow it to chill in the freezer for a maximum of 15 minutes. It is always wise to place a cloth between the chilled “bag” and the skin.

• Cold Compress: There are a number of effective ways to create a cold compress, such as placing ice cubes into a plastic sealable bag or to chill water in a rubber container with a sealable lid. Do not fill the compress fully, only partially with ice or water. Additionally, remove the air before placing the container in the freezer for 15 minutes.

• Gel Packs: A useful type of reusable compress that remains in the freezer until needed and can be easily cleaned.

WARNING: Cold applications should be removed after 20 minutes of use.

Repercussions may result in skin, tissue, or possibly, nerve damage. There is a greater risk to those with poor circulation or who have a sensory disorder. The inability to feel cold temperature may result in a greater debilitation to the afflicted area. If cold therapy has not improved an injury or swelling within 48 hours, please, call your doctor.

HEAT

As muscles can be made sore by intense exercise or overstretching, a muscle strain may occur in the lower back, neck, shoulder, or hamstring muscles. Pain and a limited extension of movement may require home treatment, beginning first with ice and continuing with heat. One warning that must always be remembered: Heat should not be used on any injury in the first 48 hours. Why? Heat is a therapy that works by improving circulation and blood flow to an afflicted area. Blood will rise to the surface later when heat is applied, and the results will aid in soothing joint stiffness and muscle spasms. Additionally, heat therapy can increase flexibility.

TYPES OF APPLICATIONS Heat therapy is beneficial when it can be applied for medium to long periods of time.

For instance, an application of up to 20 minutes of a warm damp towel to heating packs can ease minor stiffness or tension. Likewise, a longer session of warmth, such as a bath ranging from 30 minutes to two hours, will soothe moderate to severe pain.

• Warm Damp Towel: If using a towel, do not use scalding water. The water only needs to be warm. This application will help to relieve muscle spasms. Smaller areas would benefit from a towel.

• Heating Pad or Dry Heating Packs: Choose a low setting (warm) and apply a cloth in between the heating pad and skin to prevent the pad from direct contact with the skin. Heating pads are good for widespread pain or stiffness.

• Saunas or baths: Although similar to the warm towel, a sauna or bath is often more effective. One of the key incentives is an ideal temperature. “Warm” is preferable to “hot,” especially if pain is experienced on various areas on the body.

WHEN NOT TO USE If, at first appearance, the area appears bruised or swollen, heat therapy should not be applied, and especially if the wound is open. There is a higher risk to individuals who may be sensitive to burns or have pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, hypertension, dermatitis, heart disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), or vascular diseases.

Through experience, you may quickly discover inflammations and swollen areas often respond to cold applications, while muscular pain is soothed by heat. Some situations, such as arthritis pain, seek heat for joint stiffness, and a cold compress to reduce swelling and numb acute pain. It is always important to take notice of pain and to contact a doctor if the skin alters in color or bruises develop. While treatment can often be applied at home, changes for the worse may require a more serious treatment option.

Playing With Your Food: Summer Fun with Kids in the Kitchen

a rainy summer day or a too-hot-to-play-outside afternoon, why not cook up some fun with your kids in the kitchen? Each recipe below uses ingredients that you may already have on hand. So, find an apron for each of your budding chefs, and go stir up some fun together!

TAIL WAGGERS Since I don’t have a dog, I asked puppy parents Chris and Kirstin Barr to test a dog treat recipe from threelittleferns.com. This three-ingredient treat was a big hit with their Boxer-German Shepherd mix puppy, Sadie. Your dog will love them too, and your kids will have a blast baking cookies for their dog. (You and the kids can eat them too!)

YOU WILL NEED: 1½ cups uncooked oatmeal 1 large banana ½ cup peanut butter Food processor or blender Parchment paper Rolling pin Baking sheet Cookie cutters (if you have a dog bone-shaped cookie cutter, that’s ideal!)

STEPS: • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

• Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

• In a food processor or blender, grind the oats to a powder.

• In a bowl, beat together the banana and peanut butter until smooth.

• Set aside one Tablespoon of ground oatmeal.

Add remaining oatmeal to the banana-peanut butter mixture. Mix thoroughly.

• Dust a surface with the reserved ground oatmeal and roll dough to ¼-inch thickness.

• Cut into shapes and place on parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.

• Bake 15 minutes or until edges start to brown.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY: CINNAMON ORNAMENTS The cinnamon scent of these ornaments will make your kitchen smell heavenly!

YOU WILL NEED: 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons ground cinnamon ¾ cup applesauce Cookie cutters Rolling pin Drinking straw Ribbon or twine Option: You can bake these ornaments or allow them to dry at room temperature for 1–2 days.

STEPS: • If baking, preheat oven to 200 degrees.

• Combine cinnamon and applesauce in a bowl. Mix until you can form dough into a ball. If dough is crumbly, add a little more applesauce. (Dough will be sticky!)

• Working with about a quarter of the dough at a time, roll out to ¼-inch thickness onto a cinnamoncovered surface or between two sheets of plastic wrap.

• If using plastic wrap, remove the top layer before cutting dough into desired shapes with cookie cutters.

• Use the drinking straw to create a hole at the top of each ornament.

• If baking, place ornaments on a baking sheet and bake for 2½ hours. If drying, carefully place ornaments onto wire racks and let them stand for 1–2 days, turning a few times.

• When ornaments are ready, loop ribbon or twine through the hole to hang.

OH SO PRETTY SPAGHETTI YOU WILL NEED: 1 box spaghetti noodles Food coloring 2 Tablespoons water Large Ziploc bag STEPS: • Cook spaghetti according to package directions.

• Put 2 Tablespoons of water and 20 drops of food coloring into a large Ziploc bag.

• Drain spaghetti and place a portion of it into the Ziploc bag.

• Seal the bag and mix thoroughly.

• Let the noodles rest in the bag for 1 minute.

• Pour the spaghetti into a strainer and rinse with cold water.

• Repeat with a new color until you have all the colors you want.

• Mix flour and salt together in a bowl.

• Add water.

• Cut out jewelry shapes with cookie cutters. Use a straw to create a hole for ribbon or cording.

• Place cutouts onto a baking sheet and bake for about 2 hours.

• Cool, then brush or sponge on craft paint. (Optional: decorate with glitter glue, sequins, or other sparkles.)

When dry, add a glossy finish.

Great Amendments to Soil

Whenever

the blade of the gardener’s shovel is pressed down into the ground, the gardener’s hope is that the shovel’s steel reveals a beautiful coloring of soil, mixed with a few earthworms. We are not all that fortunate to find property which such enriched and well-nurtured soil. It is our task to improve the conditions by amending sandy or clay soil with essential nutrients.

Nutrients Essential to Plants Soil color is not a true indication of quality; however, it can provide clues about the conditions. For example, light coloring will indicate a grainy topsoil and offer low organic content, which implies it will not offer proper conditions for a plant to grow. The other extreme is soil that is dark, reflecting poor drainage and a high level of organic matter content. In the Piedmont Triad, our subsoil colors are often yellow and gray, brown and red.

NITROGEN: The nutrient responsible for healthy leaves and stem growth is nitrogen. One means to consider for deficient nitrogen content is adding compost manure or blood meal to your soil. (Discoloration of leaves on plants will indicate a deficiency in nitrogen or phosphorus.)

PHOSPHORUS: An essential nutrient to foster root growth, especially for root crops or flowering bulbs. Since nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are such important nutrients, consider adding lawn clippings to compost to boost the organic nature of your soil.

POTASSIUM: This particular nutrient aids in a plant’s health. While maintaining growth, potassium also provides water to boost its sustainability.

Acidity vs. Alkaline pH levels impact a plant’s nutrients; therefore, it is important to know the levels of your soil to ensure a plant is receiving what it needs from the soil.

The scale of pH ranges from 1.0 to 14.0, with 7.0 as a neutral value. The lower the number below 7.0, the more acid the soil; likewise, the higher the number beyond 7.0, the greater the alkalinity, or amount of clay. While many plants are stable in a low-acidic to neutral range, measuring 6.2 to 6.8, rhododendrons, blueberries, camellias, and lilies favor acidic soils, found in well drained and loose soil. In contrast, lilac bushes and clematis both thrive in alkaline environments.

SOIL TOO ACIDIC: To alter acid pH levels, you can raise the organic matter by adding lime, compost, manure, wood ash, grass clippings, and/or leaf mold. If plants are already in the ground, it is important not to shock them; therefore, sprinkle a little at a time, and do not reapply quarterly in the year.

SOIL TOO ALKALINE: Gardeners can use elemental sulfur or iron sulfate on soil that is heavily compacted or is comprised mainly of clay. One of the more natural ways to lower pH levels is to mix compostable soil with coffee grounds. (If plants are planted, you can still work elemental sulfur into the soil without disrupting the roots or root systems.)

TIP: Avoid using automatic watering systems on clay soil. Due to these systems’ propensity for frequent watering, plants may drown if too much water is added.

Monitor the soil to determine if the pH levels have changed. Take notice of the plant’s health, its appearance, and leaf coloring. You will need to take swift action if your plant is stressed.

A Natural Amendment – Composting Without the cost of buying bags of soil conditioner and manure, as well as concentrated levels of potassium or bone meal, one of the most valuable efforts you can achieve is through composting.

It takes little time to throw biodegradable items into a closed bucket or container, rather than into the kitchen trash can. The container can be emptied directly into the garden or into an enclosed location, such as a composter. By composting crushed egg shells, coffee grounds, banana or potato peels, rinds or cores from fruit, grass and leaves, pet hair, post-itnotes, paper napkins, shredded newspaper, pine needles and hay, to name just a few of the 160 items, your normal trash receptacle can be reduced by half or as much as two-thirds.

The result of composting is a beautiful blackened soil enriched with the necessary vitamins and minerals plants need to thrive and grow. It is a flower and plant growth-booster. And, ultimately, compost amends the soil by improving the physical and biological properties, and increases its moisture-holding capacity. It is worth the effort and the time to naturally improve our gardens simply by including compost as one amendable solution.

A Day at the Beach

What’s

something you’ve longed for, even dreamed of, all during the cold, cold winter? Easy answer! The beach—sun on your face, sand under your feet, and the sound of waves rolling onto the shoreline. Okay, the time has arrived! It’s time to pack up for a day on the beach!

Let’s get ready!

First things first, try on your bathing suit to see if it still fits, because let’s face it; no one enjoys shopping for swimwear.

Okay, it fits. Good news. Find a cover-up. Good, still on track. Now, pick something to put on after your day at the beach, so you don’t get sand all over the car seat. Wow, you really are an optimist, aren’t you?

Next, dig out your beach bag from the bottom recesses of the closet and empty the stuff you forgot about last summer when you got home. Take it outside for a good shaking to get rid of the end of last year’s sand. Now then, fold your favorite beach towel into as small a shape as you can muster—given the fact that its terrycloth, good luck with that. Add sunscreen for your face, the spray sunscreen for everywhere else, the bug bite spray (just in case), a small first-aid kit that hopefully you won’t need, and flip-flops for walking on the hot sand. Don’t forget the end-of-day outfit.

And, don’t forget your sunglasses and hat.

Now then, add a paperback for when you get tired of people watching. You’ll want some exercise, so don’t forget a Frisbee and a beach ball on which you’ll expend what seems like your last ounce of air blowing up.

Grab your folding beach chair. And that umbrella with the sand excavation tool, so it gets anchored in the sand better than last year. You don’t want to have to chase it down… not again.

What are you forgetting? Food, you forgot food. Nothing like a day at the beach to whet your appetite! Find the cooler and wipe it out. Empty all the freezer ice into it. Get a few

bottles of water, make a couple of sandwiches, grab a few apples or oranges, some chips, or maybe some deli food. No chocolate—yuck, what a mess that was last year, a big gooey blob. A couple of paper plates and napkins and you’re good to go.

Got all that! Great! Haul all that stuff to the car, and off you go. Let’s hope you can get it all to the car in one trip ’cause you’ll have to lug it all from the car to your spot on the beach.

Now is the time to rethink all the things you’ve packed to see if any can be left behind. No. Okay, moving on.

You’ve arrived. You’ve seen glimpses of the ocean for the last 30 minutes and can smell that sea air! There’s nothing like it, right? Park the car and get everything ready for the trek to find the perfect spot for the day. Luckily you got an early start, and there’s not a crowd yet. You find a spot in the vicinity of the lifeguard’s chair with an unobstructed view of the ocean.

Let the unpacking begin. Put up the umbrella. Check with the lifeguard to be sure you won’t have to move it later to make way for his umbrellas. Now, it occurs to you that you could have just rented one from him. Oh, well. You’re here and so is it. Get that anchor dug out and the umbrella up.

Get your beach chair set in the sand and drape your beach towel over it. Get the cooler and bag nestled under the umbrella. Break out that sunscreen and lather up.

Finally!! You’re at the beach; you’re settled in for a day of relaxation. What was that? It felt like a raindrop!! Are you kidding? NO!! Remain calm. It’s just a shower, not a storm. After all, you were planning to get in the ocean at some point. Water is water. Relax, read your book, have a sandwich.

Remember last winter and how you longed for a day in the sun? Have FUN!

Learning About Our Backyard Creatures

Through

the eyes of a child, the outdoors is a mesmerizing world of fluttering, crawling, and walking insects and animals. The temptation for a small hand to reach out and capture or touch is not just a strong impulse, but an action. These are, indeed, opportunities to offer a teachable moment. Beyond the walks and strolls to witness and discuss nature, learning can be continued through educational books, conversations, and creative art projects.

TURTLES

BUTTERFLIES

In the rainy seasons, turtles are visible in the most dangerous location possible- the road. One common type of turtle is the slider—characterized by its stripes of either red or yellow across its shell and underbelly. In the safety of your location, rescuing a turtle can be accomplished by carefully grasping it on the side of its shell. While keeping it low to the ground, place it facing the same direction in which it was found. Please, do not take it home!

“Calling all butterflies!” One of the most rewarding sights is watching butterflies congregate in a flower bed. One way to aid nature is to expand your flower garden by planting the very native flowers that attract winged insects, such as coneflowers, cosmos, daylilies, delphinium, lavender, and sunflowers.

Art Projects: Preschool children may enjoy cutting and gluing a design of squares onto a wide oval piece of thin cardboard to practice both cutting and creating a pattern.

The ultimate prize is being able to wear their cut-out turtle shells. Older children may enjoy painting a turtle or using a variety of mediums such as paint, construction and tissue paper to create a three-dimensional turtle.

Books: Everything You Should Know About: Turtles, by Anne Richards, (ages 5-6) FROGS The frog is a fascinating creature, dating back 265 million years, and currently ranging from the tropics to the subarctic regions. While there are 4,800 species, only 85% are amphibians. Children may come across a frog when the weather produces puddles. The question may be asked, is it a frog or a toad?

Art Projects: Clay would be the perfect medium to create a replica of a frog’s and toad’s body to practice fine motor skills. Additionally, children could make a tadpole and froglet, or draw a frog’s life cycle.

BY DR. DEBBIE LINVILLE Each month I spotlight two books guaranteed to delight readers and provide fun activities to further extend the meaning of each reading experience. With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 35-year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers and writers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS…MORE EMPATHY Unlike sympathy (caring that someone is in a tough situation and offering comfort, but not necessarily feeling emotion along with them), empathy requires us to try to understand what another person is feeling and respond in helpful ways.

Empathy is seeing the world through another’s eyes and in the process, understanding both ourselves and other people from the inside out. The more we seek to understand where others are coming from and how others are seeing the world, the greater chance we have of becoming our best self and making the world a better place. There are many ways to instill empathy in children, but one that is particularly effective is to communicate empathy through the pages of a book. Stories that showcase and promote empathy allow children to put themselves into another person’s (literary) shoes and see how characters relate to each other.

Learning to stand in somebody else’s shoes, to see through their eyes, that’s how peace begins. And it’s up to you to make that happen. Empathy is a quality of character that can change the world. ~Barack Obama

A SICK DAY FOR AMOS McGEE

THE INVISIBLE BOY

Winner of the 2011 Caldecott Medal, this husband-and-wife team have created a tender tale of friendship between the kind, elderly zookeeper, Amos McGee, and his special animal friends: elephant, tortoise, penguin, rhinoceros, and owl. Each day, Amos rises early and takes Bus #5 to the City Zoo, to care lovingly for each animal, giving each one exactly what he needs (e.g., reading a bedtime story to owl, running races with tortoise, and sitting with shy penguin). However, one day Amos is sick with a cold and cannot make the trek to the zoo. The animals return the favor by taking Bus #5 to Amos’ home to take care of him. This book is a poignant reminder that friends come in all shapes and sizes (and species) and friendship is marked by empathy and companionship— being there for one another is worthy of celebration.

Trudy Ludwig shares the story of Brian, a quiet boy with a toothy smile and large rimmed glasses who goes seemingly unnoticed by his classmates and teacher.

He is excluded from a classmate’s birthday party, left out of group work, and is the only person not chosen for the kickball team at recess. His “invisible” status is cleverly depicted in black and white across the pages of the book, until a new kid, Justin, joins the class and asks him to work together on a project which allows Brian’s artistic abilities to shine. This kind gesture is the catalyst that not only transforms an “invisible” boy into a friend, but also brings a flood of color to the otherwise drab illustrations. This story spotlights the importance of empathy and inclusiveness and is a perfect discussion starter for children who feel “invisible,” and those who need to notice and befriend “invisible” children.

• He is new to the United States and does not speak English very well—two children laugh when he says his name.

Create a recipe for empathy by using these “ingredients,” along with a step-by-step process needed to obtain the desired results.

Be creative! (E.g., mix together 1 tsp. of compassion with a dash of kindness. Set aside for five minutes and then fold understanding into the mixture.) Below are some cooking verbs to get you started: 1. bake

In A Sick Day for Amos McGee, when Amos is too ill to make the trip to the zoo to take care of the animals, they decide to visit him and do what they can to make him feel better. Trace your shoes on a plain piece of paper, cut them out, and glue them to a piece of

Instill a Love of Reading

the skills of educational development begin with reading. whether it is reading directions, for information or pleasure. When children are asked why they love to read, the answer often is connected to a beloved book or attained through someone’s passion for the story.

As a parent, you may recall your own fictitious friends who influenced your travels through space or to distant lands, such as the Hundred Acre Wood, Narnia, or Oz. If you need more pizazz to encourage a love of reading, try the following suggestions!

Location is Important!

Perhaps lying on the living room couch or snuggling in bed require a new placement of open flaps and an outdoorsy feel.

Why not build a fort comprising the dining room table and a large quilt, or a tent set up in the back yard, brightened by lantern light? Even congregating on the front porch swing can be a place to start a daily tradition of fictitious sword fights or high adventure. A secret or new location to read may set the tone for togetherness, or for a child’s quiet time.

Weekly Library Trips Your local library cannot only supply every age of the family with great books, but also offer wonderful activities that span from movie nights to a science-themed afternoon. Even today, it is not too late to become active. Introduce yourself to the librarian. He or she will be glad to see your faces enter through the doors and may glean your family’s interests to recommend a list of beloved and kid-approved titles.

A New Language Summer presents many opportunities to travel here and there. Playing a game may occupy a certain portion of time; yet, if your family is ready to learn a new language, please consider sign language. Fingerspelling license plate letters can help instill a rapid feel for the alphabet while one is also practicing spelling. Audiobooks One of the greatest features of audiobooks is that they can easily be downloaded onto any device. Children can take advantage of listening to stories up to two years above

their reading level, bearing in mind that the book’s themes are age- appropriate. Connected to the skill of reading is listening and following along. Whether the entire family is listening to the same book or it is only played for one person, imagination is needed to follow the array of characters through various problems and outcomes. If there is a book your child has been wanting to read, listening to it may be a rewarding option. Audiobooks also help readers develop an interest in a story. Check your local library for a list of titles or download audiobooks online for free. Auditory learners may relish this wonderful means of reading! No excuses for those procrastinating on starting their summer reading assignments!

Science Experiments From your local library, check out a book full of science experiments. They are presented in procedural step-by-step instructions. Not only can children improve their ability to follow instructions, but also expand their understanding of safe chemicals and chemical reactions, liquids, motion, air, magnets, and homemade flying gadgets. Children can write down or verbalize why particular experiments worked or how a change could improve the outcome.

Non-Fiction Reading isn’t always connected to a fictitious story. Children who do not know what to read can learn about their interests, such as Ancient Egypt or the Civil War, Leonardo da Vinci or Cleopatra. Once additional facts are learned, children may discover that the genre of historical or realistic fiction can further their knowledge of a time or event through a story.

TIP: First through fourth graders may enjoy the Magic Tree House series and the Fast Tracker books.

Reading the Lyrics Have a vocalist in the house? Google the name of the song and the word “lyrics.” Children of all ages can enjoy the simple pleasure of singing and reading along to their favorite songs.

EdPath Forest School Nature Preschool

is 10 AM on a warm but drizzly Tuesday morning.

After putting on their rain suits and finishing their snacks at the picnic table, five children begin clay work with Ms. Annette at the outdoor art studio, and several children head to Babbling Brook Bend on the property with Ms. Denise. Madeline squats near a shallow stream, watching the water flow. She has an idea! She says she will make a fairy boat! Quickly, she picks a Poplar leaf sail off the nearby tree, snaps a twig just the right size for the mast, and finds a large piece of pine bark for the hull. She assembles her little boat, walks it upstream slightly, and lets it float downstream. Jonathan decides this looks like fun and he asks Madeline to help him build a boat, too. Meanwhile, Martha and Lydia are squatting in the sand, using sticks to write their names. Miguel and Aiden stack river rocks to make a mini-fort for their stick people.

Ms. Denise observes these explorations carefully, taking pictures and writing notes to document skill development.

She asks the children questions that encourage them to make predictions and explain and stretch their thinking.

She expands their language skills as she has in-depth discussions with them and facilitates these discussions among the children. She is also ready to help the children resolve conflicts, should these arise.

Sheri Grace, PhD, and Denise Terry, MA, of EdPath Specialized Learning Services, LLC, are working to make the experiences like the one above a reality for the children of the Forsyth County area. They, working with the help of community members and organizations, are in the beginning stages of opening EdPath Forest School. They hope to enroll ten children between the ages of three and five and a half in the first class, and hold it from 8:30-12:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays, August 27th to just before Christmas. Once a wooded site and park in the WinstonSalem area are chosen, and other final arrangements are made, the class will be open to children of all ability levels. Denise will be the onsite director and environmental educator for the class, and a second teacher with a degree and experience in early childhood education will co-teach.

Sheri will provide direction and professional development.

Parent participation will be required, and volunteers will be welcomed.

Forest schools originate in Scandinavia. They incorporate “playwork,” self-directed learning, and immersion in interest driven nature study. Sessions are outdoors year-round, even in rain showers. Teachers are co-learners who expand and document learning while keeping children safe. Children are free to run, climb, be active, get dirty, explore, and take risks, while being protected from danger.

EdPath Forest School will use an emergent curriculum, blending nature play with the Reggio approach. Mornings at EdPath Forest School’s nature preschool will begin with a gathering circle. Afterwards, children will prepare and eat a snack, then engage in self-directed nature play, creative projects, and facilitated nature study with their teachers. They may walk to a nearby playground before returning for a picnic lunch and the closing gathering. Storybook sharing, storytelling, and singing will be part of all gatherings. Children will keep journals by drawing and by taking pictures and dictating notes to their teachers to write down for them. Children will be free to make art with items they have collected in their nature explorations and with other media, and they will get teacher support to build social and communication skills as they interact together.

Teachers will track weather alerts, and the class will go to a nearby church or another community building if it starts to thunder. School will be cancelled or dismissed if the county schools close due to inclement weather.

it is at the beach or pool, water seems to be a summer necessity. As summer continues, more and more people flock to the water to escape the growing heat.

However celebrated, water and the creatures within still pose a significant risk to all ages. As teens, we have reached the age where we go to beaches and pools unaccompanied. With this advantage comes the responsibility to be capable of caring for others, as well as ourselves. Being prepared to personally handle dramatic situations will allow you to fully relax at the beach and pool, not to mention save the lives of victims.

FYI: This guide is not intended to replace professional classes in First Aid and resuscitation; however, the general knowledge and instruction below is a good start.

REMEMBER: If the victim is conscious, ask permission to help (this will prevent possible lawsuits).

If a victim is found unconscious in water: If you are alone, you should help the victim for one minute before calling 911. If you are not alone, tell one or two people to call 911 immediately. If you shout, “Someone call 911,” bystanders will often leave the job to someone else, wasting precious time.

Pull the victim out of the water and place them on their back, tilt the chin up (so that the tongue is not blocking the airway). If there is steady breathing, keep the head tilted and call 911.

If the victim is not breathing, keep the chin tilted, pinch the nostrils shut, and seal your lips over the victim’s open mouth. Push two breaths into the victim’s lungs; you should be able to see their chest rise as you breathe out. If the victim becomes alert, coughing up water and beginning to breathe, stop CPR and place the victim on their side to let any water get out of their lungs.

If the victim does not stir, place the heel of one hand on the middle of the breastbone, above the ribs, and put your second hand on the first. Then press down firmly, about two inches in (for infants use two fingers and press more gently). Administer 30 chest compressions before returning to give two breaths. Switch between these two exercises until the victim recuperates or help arrives.

If you are pulled out by a riptide: There has been a bit of controversy over how to handle rip tides.

Some say, swim parallel to the shore to get out of the backwardmoving current. Others say allow the current to push you out; many riptides are circular, and if you go with the flow, you will be brought back to shore within minutes.

However, all agree that you should NOT fight the current to try and swim back to the beach. The riptide is one foe that refuses to let you practice “fight or flight.” If you push against the current, which is flowing at a rate faster than Michael Phelps, you will exhaust yourself until you can no longer stay afloat. If you remain calm, let the current tug you away from the shore or swim purposefully in one direction or the other, you will not be pulled under. Since many riptides are circular, the easier course to swim will lead you out. If there is a lifeguard on duty shout and wave them down.

If you spot someone caught in a riptide, do NOT go in after the victim. The one to drown in a riptide is usually the one who chases a victim down.

Instead, throw any floating device you have into the water toward the victim, and go to, or call for help, from a lifeguard.

If you are approached or attacked by a shark: If you see a shark nearby, keep as still as possible, then move slowly toward shore; sharks are attracted to erratic movement (which they believe is a dying animal—easy prey). For this reason, you should also keep your dog on shore. To prevent attracting sharks, do not wear shiny jewelry or brightlycolored swimsuits; sharks can spot the contrast with the ocean water easily.

If an attack is imminent, use anything you have in your hands as a weapon; if you are emptyhanded, use your fists and fingernails to scratch the eyes or pummel the gills or snout of the shark.

Do not try going limp after an attack is underway; fight aggressively.

If you are bitten, calmly exit the water as quickly as possible. Keep in mind, many shark bite victims do not feel pain, so check yourself after exiting the water. After leaving the water, stop the bleeding quickly by tying a strip of cloth tightly above the wound (that is, make a tourniquet) and/or wrapping material firmly over the wound. If blood from any cut or bite soaks through the bandages you have already applied, do not remove the cloth, instead, add more dressings on top of the wound and increase the pressure. Seek medical attention, no matter how small the bite.

UNDERSTANDING WE ALL HAVE CURTAINS

As

my children have gotten older, their lessons have become more mature. The objective of getting them to appreciate the lesson has become no less daunting, but underneath I think they’re beginning to realize there’s some truth and benefit to these lessons, if not immediately, perhaps at some later date down the road. They’d never admit that to me, of course. The trick for me is to incorporate the lesson within the context of our usual dinner conversation as if it relates to some news event or happening we’re discussing at the time. I have to be subtle in my approach, otherwise I’ll lose their attention.

During one such dinner, I brought up a movie my wife and I had watched recently. The movie was American Teen (produced by A&E IndieFilms and released by Paramount Vantage), a documentary that seemed more like a regular movie, about five seniors at Warsaw Community High School in rural Indiana. As you might expect, each was representative of a unique segment of high school life. There was Colin, a basketball star in search of an athletic scholarship in order to afford college; Megan, a wealthy “Princess-type” used to getting what she wants, however, who has high expectations placed upon her as well; Mitch, the romantic player-type, ladies’ man; Hannah, a rebellious personality who also possesses a valuable talent in art; and finally, Jake, a self-described “Geek,” who’s shy and has trouble fitting in with any one particular group. Each one completely different from the other, yet all had their own unique problems and concerns to contend with, unbeknownst to their peers.

The beauty of this coming-of-age film, as I explained, was that unlike other films of its type, this one starred the genuine seniors themselves, living life as it actually happened, not scripted or choreographed. The director used a small twoman film crew for each senior and basically blended in, allowing the students to interact as they would normally do, which contributed to the film’s authenticity.

The other advantage of seeing this film was the opportunity it provided me to explain the concept of what I call “curtains.”

It’s basically that everyone you see, whether known or unknown to you, has the face and behavior they’re giving off

in that instance, and then they have their curtain. Imagine that everyone you see is walking around with a curtain behind them. What you see is what they want you to see, but what you don’t see is what is behind their curtain. And that is the largest part of who they really are. It includes their experiences, their feelings, fears, goals, and innermost thoughts, and that’s just the beginning. Behind the curtain is their actual state of mind at that moment in time. What they’re really thinking, how they’re feeling physically, emotionally, and mentally, and the opinions and beliefs that affect their actions. What you see in the person is only about ten percent of what is actually there, if that much. You can’t see their past experiences, their health, concerns, worries, ambitions, and objectives that affect how they react to you and others. You see what is displayed, but you can’t see the reality behind the curtain.

This is important, because if each of us fathoms this concept, then we may be more careful not to jump to conclusions and opinions about someone in any given situation. We can learn to look beyond their words, emotions, actions, and so forth, to see if maybe there’s something else causing this reaction. In doing that, we’re more receptive in our responses, more careful and considerate in a way that a person normally isn’t. For example, if mom yells to come to dinner for the third time, angrily, appreciate what might be behind that behavior, other than the obvious. Perhaps it’s been a long day at work, she’s tired and hungry, and wants to spend quality time with her family to relax, and the delay is annoying.

There can be any number of examples, but I think I made my point. It appeared they understood. The concept of curtains offers a perspective that helps narrow the gap between our differences of opinion, and creates a better understanding of who we are and why we do what we do. We may not know all the answers, but recognizing that other influences may exist makes our responses more empathetic and amicable. This lesson is not just for our children, though; it’s one that we can all learn from and appreciate, perhaps leading us to become a better parent, child, spouse, co-worker, teammate, or friend in the process. It’s a worthwhile effort, I think.

MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO

My dear friend, do not imitate what is bad, but imitate what is good. ~ 3 John 1:11 Have you ever heard the silly words “Monkey see, monkey do”? Maybe you have a friend who always copies you. You say, “Stop it!” and he or she says, “Stop it!” Then you say, “I mean it!” And they answer, “I mean it!” You go out to play and they’re right behind you. You open a book and they want to look at the same book—right now! You could call him or her a copycat…or, someone might say, “Monkey see, monkey do.”

In the verse above, the word “imitate” means to follow or to copy. The verse tells us that we shouldn’t copy the bad things people say or do, but follow good people and try to be more like them. Have you ever said a naughty word that you heard someone else say? Maybe then you got a spanking or were put in “time out.” That’s what can happen when you copy a bad thing. Think of a time when you helped someone before they even asked for help. Do you remember how happy that made your heart feel? That’s what happens when you imitate something good.

Every day you will see what people do. You will hear what people say. Little by little you will learn to know the difference between good and bad.

It might sound like mom and dad are being mean, but they’re helping you learn to choose what is best.

This world has many bad people and lots of yucky stuff. The Bible says, “No one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). Even nice people sometimes do bad things. That’s called ‘sin’. So the best plan is to follow God. You can’t see God, so how can you follow him and get to know him better? You can pray. You can watch people who love God. You can put some Bible verses in your heart.

Remember, don’t imitate or copy bad stuff. But when you’re trying to do what is right and good, it’s okay to be a copycat.

BY TAMI RUMFELT One of the things I love about the relaxed pace of summer time is the opportunity to catch up on reading. There is nothing like a good book enjoyed by the pool, or better yet, at the beach.

There was a period of time many years ago when I pretty much stopped reading altogether. It happened when I was in college, when I should have been doing more reading than ever before. My logic was totally flawed, but, because I had so much required reading for my classes, I felt guilty about reading for pleasure. So, I wouldn’t pick up a book just for fun. But, I also wasn’t really doing the reading I was supposed to be doing for my classes, either. So essentially, I just stopped reading. Laziness and a lack of motivation stopped me from reading what I was required to read, and guilt stopped me from reading what I wanted to read.

Guilt is powerful. If we allow it, it can get in the way of a lot of things, including our relationship with Jesus.

Sometimes, we can become overwhelmed by all of the “requirements” we believe Christians are supposed to fulfill, and then feel guilty for not measuring up. At those times, it can be tempting to just stop trying altogether.

A Vacation Interrupted Imagine, for a moment, that you are a pastor. You love your work and your congregation. You also love your family and are looking forward to your upcoming vacation when you’ll be able to spend a whole week, uninterrupted, with your wife and kids. The hotel is booked, the car is packed and, as soon as you finish preaching Sunday morning, you and the family are going to head to the beach for some much-needed R&R. But, early Monday morning you get a phone call.

Sadly, an elderly member of your congregation passed away yesterday, and the family wants you to officiate her funeral…tomorrow. What will you do? If you stay, your family will be disappointed, and you will miss time with them that you can never get back. If you leave, you risk deeply disappointing your church family.

This imagined scenario is all too real for many pastors. During the summer months, it’s a good time to ask if your church has a plan in place that allows your pastor some time away with his or her family, so, no matter what happens, that stipulation will be respected and protected. If not, #BeTheOne to start that conversation with the leadership in your church.

And, I think you should. Stop trying. Altogether.

You see, unlike the work in my college classes, the work of the Cross has already been done. If you are trying to measure up, to meet some Christian “gold standard,” I’m afraid you are missing out on the beauty and freedom that comes from living in God’s grace.

When we live in grace, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts and actions, following Jesus doesn’t feel like a burden. We can rest, knowing that the requirement for eternal salvation has already been met. We can actually enjoy ourselves and our relationship with Jesus, casting off the chains of guilt and regret once and for all.

women are all about the shoes. But I am all about the purses. I absolutely love handbags, and up until about a year ago, I switched purses almost daily and could easily carry a different bag every day for three months. I’ve downsized a lot, but at one time, I had an entire closet dedicated to my purses.

And while I almost never pay retail (preferring to shop consignment), my favorite brand is Kate Spade.

In 2000, Kate Spade published a book called Contents, and a friend gave me a copy. (Since I know some men read this, I don’t want to exclude you. While the women will think about their purses, please think about your wallets and pockets.)

The book invited women to share the contents of their purses. The contents were photographed and listed.

While some may think it’s a crazy idea for a book, it was fun and quirky, and one of the reasons Kate Spade bags have always been my favorite. The pictures show a hodgepodge of stuff from wallets, cash, makeup, water bottles, pencils, cell phones, bus and subway passes, passports, candy wrappers, etc.

It’s a photo essay of what a lot of women do—shove things in our bags and let it all stay there.

How true that is—both literally and figuratively.

And as is clear from the reports of her suicide in June, Kate Spade was familiar with being weighed down by the contents of life. I don’t want to speak about her personal situation, since that would be complete speculation on my part. But instead, I want to put a challenge out there, inspired by Kate Spade and her book, Contents.

If someone took a look at our own emotional contents of life—what would they find? Anxiety? Sadness? Insecurity?

Pride? Jealousy? Shame? Bitterness? Loneliness?

And if we were asked to share the stories behind our emotional contents, what would we say? Most of us don’t want to share those things. We’ve shoved them down, into deep pockets, and we want to move forward, but

the bag keeps getting heavier. It cuts into our shoulders as we try to function with what feels like the weight of the world on our backs.

But here’s the truth—we weren’t meant to carry these bags. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

It doesn’t mean the contents disappear, but it means He’s willing to carry the weight. He wants us to lean into Him and trust Him with the contents of our emotional lives and day-to-day responsibilities.

Plus, He already knows us, including the contents of our hearts and minds. In Jeremiah 1:5a, God says, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.”

While this has been an exercise in looking inward, let’s shift back to looking outward. People all around us — both women and men — are carrying heavy emotional bags they don’t need to carry. So many are hurting, and so many need help carrying their loads. Jesus is ready anytime we ask. And there’s no one better qualified than He is!

Jesus wants to filter through the contents and replace the heavy things with easier-to-carry things like love.

Joy. Peace. Hope. Trust. Forgiveness. Life. Eternal life through Him. He’s already paid the price. We just need to trust Him and let Him take care of us as He’s promised to do.

Once we accept His gift, Jesus is there to help us carry the load. All we need to do is ask Him to take it, then surrender to Him all that weighs us down. Through faith, trust, and confidence in Jesus, He can sort through our emotional contents and leave us with something far better.

I’ve

done quite a bit of traveling lately, both international and domestic.

I love to travel, and look forward to these opportunities with great anticipation and joy. For me, the adventure in travel comes even before arriving in a new country, region, or city. Call me crazy, but there are few places I enjoy more than an airport terminal. There are a plethora of restaurant choices, all within walking distance; large windows with magnificent views of aircraft; unlimited (albeit expensive) coffee, and people all around. What’s not to love?

Airport terminals are a people-watcher’s dream come true. I typically arrive earlier than my flight, just to soak in this unique waiting experience.

This week, however, I had a very different experience. The seasonal storms beating down on the Southeastern US caused a major delay in all flights into and out of this international hub. No flights could land, and no flights could leave. Thousands of people were stuck in transition; stuck waiting for hours. First, the restaurants and bars filled up, with every seat taken. Then each gate seating area filled up. With all the chairs occupied, many travelers make space on the floors. The crowd overflowed from the gate area onto the main hall. I felt terrible for the family whose only seat was next to the men’s restroom entrance.

The longer I waited, the more aware of my privilege I became. A sobering thought resonated through me: My typical first-world travel experience, providing me entertainment and luxury, is vastly different from the way the rest of the world travels. I have been so conditioned to expect certain extravagancies afforded by the influence of the hospitality industry (including timely, safe flights), I was grossly out of touch with the global community.

Even my motivation to travel for personal or professional gain was born of privilege, unlike those seeking political or social freedom, traveling out of necessity.

In my wait, I opened the Scriptures and read of God’s compassionate heart for the traveler, the sojourner, the transient, the migrant, the homeless, the itinerant, the displaced, the vagabond and the refugee. I reread a few of the hundreds of stories where God sends people from their homeland to journey, and where God meets the traveler along the weary road. I recalled Christ’s warning to wouldbe followers: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Luke 9:58 & Matthew 8:20).

In the uncomfortable, overcrowded space of unknown waiting in the airport, literally

between here and there, I recognized just how far displaced I was from Israel’s story; a story of slavery in Egypt, wandering in the desert wilderness, captivity in Babylon and refugees of the diaspora.

Many of us will use these summer months to travel. Perhaps to vacation with family, visit friends or sight-see somewhere new while the children are out of school.

Whether it’s to the lake, Disney World or a sandy beach somewhere, I encourage you all to remember Israel’s story. Show patience in the uncomfortable moments, for our traveling conditions are far better than most. Show mercy to other travelers; you do not know their motivation for travel. Welcome the stranger, greet those at rest stops or restaurants with a kind smile or buy a cold drink for another on the road, for in their company you may commune with Christ.

Above all, be mindful that we as Christfollowers are perpetually in-between.

We occupy space in the current age and the age to come. We wait in this space, working faithfully for the inbreaking of the Kingdom of God into our here-and-now.

In this space between, we are to share the redeeming love and healing grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Changing Women’s Lives One at a Time

Most

people do not know there are more than 20,000 working-aged women in Forsyth County living in poverty. Or, that as many as 5,000, or 25% of those women, do not have minor dependents in the home. Since census data are not specifically gathered to identify this demographic, the statistical interpretations vary from source to source. 1

Who should care and why do these statistics matter?

First, everyone should care.

Second, as compared to single women with dependents who do receive assistance, women without dependents have limited access to assistance and resources, which can make all the difference in these women’s lives, to their families, in their relationships and to the community at large.

The ministry launched its first class with seven women on March 1st, 2018.

They met as a small group one day each week for classes and a shared meal for the sixteen-week semester.

Each of the sixteen program-days was broken up into 3-5 sessions that varied from week to week. Topics included Financial Management, Interviewing Skills, Behavioral and Mental Health, Change and Decisionmaking, Conflict Management, Women’s Health, as well as Perseverance and Succeeding in life and the workplace, among others.

COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM For more than two years, Pivot worked developing collaborative relationships with local organizations to identify gaps in service to this demographic cohort and strategizing how to work together. They also developed customized content with input from the participants, which is consistent with an asset-based community development approach.

Polk assured, “Without the support of the community, our partners and sponsors, we could not deliver this high-quality instruction to our participants. The skills they learn and the relationships they forge among themselves, with their mentors, the instructors and sponsors, empowers them to approach their lives and future employment with new eyes and experiences grounded in the training we provide.”

She continued, “I watched our participants flourish! They have hope, specific goals, and a sense of achievement. We have built a strong, supportive community in this small group and hope they will continue those relationships for many years to come.”

ENTER PIVOT MINISTRY According to the MerriamWebster Dictionary, “pivot” as a verb means “to turn on or as if on a pivot.”

Envisioned in 2015 and initially funded by Ardmore Baptist Church, Pivot Ministry is based on the successful 20-year-old model of the Christian Women’s/Men’s Job Corps®. Pivot’s objective is to empower low-income women for better life and income-producing opportunities through classes in life and job skills, and Bible study, supported and sponsored by local community resources.

According to Carol Polk, the Executive Director and Site Coordinator of Pivot Ministry, “We found these women’s requests for assistance are often denied; therefore, we determined our initial target group would be these underserved women, whether they are married or single.”

During the semester and following graduation, each participant partners with a one-on-one Christian mentor to guide them as they complete their class work and begin their new personal journeys. To begin, a woman 74 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

For

individuals struggling with drug addiction, overdose is an ever-present danger. Often they do not intend to overdose on their drug of choice. An overdose may happen accidentally for many reasons, such as taking a regular dosage after tolerance has lowered, taking a stronger dose than the body is accustomed to, or combining substances of abuse.

While some people do overdose intentionally, the majority of overdoses are unintentional.

Overdoses, sometimes referred to as “preventable drug-related poisoning deaths,” are at an all-time high and increasing rapidly.

In 2016, 54,793 people died from preventable drug overdoses, which is an increase of 391% since 1999. Accidental drug overdose deaths increased 327% over the same period. With the increase of the use of opioids today and the epidemic of heroin use that is in many of our communities, knowing the signs of drug overdose is even more important if you have a loved one or a friend who is battling the demons of addiction.

Whether you are a parent or a friend of someone at risk for overdose, don’t kid yourself, an overdose is best handled by erring on the side of safety. With the “Good Samaritan Law,” the person who suffered the overdose, as well as those who call 911 to report the emergency, are free of legal prosecution. You have no reason not to report it, and that action on your part may save a life.

Depending on what drug a person has taken, symptoms of an overdose vary. It’s not always easy to recognize overdose symptoms when someone has used too much of an opioid drug, because the drug’s effects often mimic those similar to those of an overdose. People may not realize they are experiencing an overdose, especially if they are heavily under the influence of a particular drug. Some of the symptoms of overdose include severe chest pain, seizure, headache, difficulty breathing and either delirium, extreme agitation, or anxiety. In addition to these symptoms, others may include increased or decreased body temperature, a clammy, sweaty feel to the skin, passing out, vomiting and a fast or slow pulse.

Oftentimes, it is difficult for individuals to know exactly how much of a drug they are injecting, snorting, smoking or ingesting.

Today’s drugs associated with overdoses include over-the-counter medications like liquid cough medicines, as well as medications containing pseudoephedrine, used to make meth. Overdoses are also caused by opioids and synthetically produced, and often referred to, as “designer drugs,” like Ecstasy, amphetamines, ketamine, and rohypnol (the “date rape” drug). If a person injects a substance into their veins, like heroin, the effects of the drug are more intense and take action much more quickly than if the drug were swallowed. Users of drugs have a sense that there is safety in numbers, so if something goes wrong while using a specific drug, having others around increases the probability that the results won’t be deadly…there’s someone to help. Sadly, that’s not always the case.

If you are with a friend or loved one experiencing any of the symptoms of an overdose, do not wait or try to bring the person back around with “walking it off” or “waiting to see what happens.” Call 911 immediately and do not leave the person alone; remain with them until medical help arrives. If the person has passed out, place them on their side, just in case they vomit.

Do not let the person eat or drink anything, and if there is anyone present who knows what substance was taken, that information should be reported to the emergency responders, so appropriate treatment can be administered.

Under the Good Samaritan laws, if people realize that someone is experiencing an overdose, they should call 911 right away and report the incident. Once they do so, and medical assistance is given to the person in need, they are given limited protection from prosecution for possession of drugs and/or alcohol. North Carolina is one of 32 states that has a Good Samaritan law.

This protection is intended to reduce bystanders’ hesitation to assist, for fear of being prosecuted for unintentional injury or wrongful death.

Most people who overdose have a history of substance abuse or addiction. However, death can occur from one-time experimentation. Be aware of loved ones and friends who you know are struggling with addiction and be aware of the signs of an overdose. Saving a life and helping get someone treatment and on the road to recovery can change a bad decision into a healthier life and good choices for the future.

It’s a GRAND Life

is officially summer. School is out, and parents are looking for things to do and ways to keep their children (your grandchildren) from being bored, whining, complaining, or parking themselves in front of the TV for hours. Whether your grandchildren live close by or not, you may be asked to take care of them from time to time and, maybe more so, when school is out.

When I was a child, my family traveled to Texas to visit my grandparents. It was a hot, sticky, two-and-a-half day drive that made my parents need a vacation by the time we got there.

My sister and I emerged from the car asking our granddad when he was going to take us and my cousins fishing. It was always a great treat and one of many things we looked forward to doing while we were there. After 10 days, it was back in the car for a day’s drive to my other set of grandparents where more adventures were planned.

My parents always wanted their granddaughters to have fun, memorymaking visits – and the girls were never disappointed (except when it came time to return home). I want my grandchildren to have those same feelings when they’re with Gigi and Pabo. It is important to remember that the activities need to take into account their interests, ages and abilities.

One of the best things I did with the grandchildren in mind was purchase a NC Zoo grandparent-plus membership. Located in Asheboro, the zoo is an easy trip from Forsyth

County and provides hours of fun and education for everyone. With different ages and appetites, we usually brought lunches and snacks from home, but there are a number of eating options on site. One of the great things about this membership is the discounts or free admissions I get to many other zoos and aquariums.

Now living at the coast, it includes admission to the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. The first time I used my membership, I added up the admission price to the zoo which included myself, two of my daughters and five grandchildren and found the membership had nearly paid for itself that first visit. It has more than paid for itself with now, not only the zoo, but the many times we have gone to the aquarium.

Living in North Carolina, we are so fortunate to have so many options of wonderful things to do and share with our grandchildren. I recently found a list and was astounded at the number of places to go and fun things to do that were available in this state. It appears that no matter where you are, you are only a short drive away from something that will delight and entertain.

Here are several examples of places I found: butterfly farm; raptor center; animal park and petting zoos; sea life aquariums; nature centers; ropes courses; zip lines; laser tag; white water center; gem mines; railroads; amusement parks; water parks; minor league baseball games; bowling; golf; tennis; ice skating; roller skating; children’s museums; lakes; mountains; parks; planetarium; libraries; escape rooms; movies; and the list goes on.

To find anything your grands express interest in doing, all you need to do is search on your computer using a keyword to find what is available and the location.

So, next time I stay with my grandchildren in Charlotte, I will know about places to go that they maybe haven’t been to in a while or may not have ever been. Likewise, when they come for a visit or I am with my grands that live here, I can take them on new adventures that neither might have experienced. Either way, I hope when they grow up and have grandchildren of their own, they will have sweet memories of fun times with Gigi - oh, and Pabo.

TIPS FOR VISITING DISNEY WORLD If

you are traveling to Disney World with your family, planning ahead is key!

Details and further explanations on each of these tips below can be found on Triad Moms on Main’s website. Simply type “Disney” in the search bar, and you will see “20 Random Tips for Visiting Disney World” pop up!

1. Use a Disney Vacation Planner. This is a travel agent who specializes in Disney. They earn commission from Disney, so you pay nothing.

2. Download the “My Disney Experience” app. Everything is at your fingertips… wait times for rides, pictures from your visit, meal plan balance, fast pass opportunities, etc.

3. Get your Fast Passes early. These allow you to make a “reservation” for a ride during a designated time slot. You can do this through the My Disney Experience App, or your Disney planner will do this for you.

4. Arrive when the park opens. Your wait time will be almost nothing during the off-season, and minimal during peak season.

5. Watch the Opening Performance at the Magic Kingdom. We love this as a start to our morning!

6. Everything takes longer than you think it will. Allow extra time each day in your schedule!

7. Don’t stress about transportation.

People often make a big to-do about staying on the grounds, so you don’t have to worry about driving yourself.

We have stayed both on and off the Disney grounds and taking the Disney buses versus driving ourselves wasn’t much different.

8. Bring your own drinks. You will save a bundle.

9. Dining Plan or No Dining Plan? If you are visiting when the dining plan is offered for free, of course, do it. BUT if you usually just grab a granola bar for breakfast and aren’t a big snacker, I would opt out of the meal plan. Take a look at the menus and restaurants online to gauge what might be the best fit for your family.

10. Limit Souvenirs. Give kids the choice of one souvenir per day. This helps keep the begging to a minimum.

11. Make meal reservations. You go from hungry to HANGRY in minutes!

Plan ahead.

12. Avoid Saturdays and Holidays. Our past three vacations have been in mid-October and early December, during off-peak times. There have been minimal waits, minimal crowds, and perfect temperatures.

13. Use the Single Rider Line for Test Track. If you have little ones, this may not be your best bet, but if you have independent kids who don’t mind riding without you, this is the way to go! Minimal wait.

14. Look for Hidden Mickeys. The classic ears can be found all over the parks and resorts. It’s a great way to entertain little ones!

15. Naps are good. Head to your hotel to nap after lunch when crowds are busiest and then go back later in the day.

16. Use the “Rider Switch.” Allows parents into each ride with their child without having to wait in line again.

17. Use the park maps. Lay out some sort of plan for where you will go and when. You will walk A LOT at Disney, so there is no need to add extra work for yourself or your little ones.

18. Take a backpack. A few items that are great to pack: drinks, cell phone, sunscreen, rain poncho (for bad weather and/or the River Rapids and Splash Mountain rides), sunglasses, hats, jackets, wipes/hand sanitizer, snacks.

19. Don’t read every tip and guidebook. This is supposed to be a vacation, so relax and enjoy it! Plan ahead by using the tips above (visit my blog for more details), visit the Disney website, and talk to a friend or two who has visited previously. You will be fine without downloading a library of resources!

20. It’s not just an amusement park. This is for anyone who has never visited Disney World before. Don’t expect the county fair or an amusement park with rows and rows of thrill rides.

Disney World is completely different.

It’s not just about the rides. It’s the entire experience. The engineers and cast members take into account all five senses. You will smell the beach as you pass over water on Soarin’, you will hear the Seven Dwarfs singing as you enter into the Mine Train, you will see fireworks and lights and themerelated décor everywhere you turn, you will hug characters whom you’ve only seen on a screen, and you will taste food from around the world in Epcot. Take it all in and enjoy the downtime just as much as you enjoy the excitement on an attraction!

Whether for a picnic, party or summer snack, make your table red white & blue for the July 4th holiday with help from the kids! Did you know that the first public Independence Day celebration in our country happened at Old Salem?

FIRECRACKER HOT DOGS

RED, WHITE & BLUE SALAD

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

1 can refrigerated breadstick dough

1 cup fresh blueberries

16 hot dogs

1 cup strawberries, diced

16 thick slices Colby jack cheese

½ watermelon, cubed

16 skewers

4 tsp. mint leaves, chopped

star cookie cutter

1 large lime, juiced

DIRECTIONS:

¼ tsp. sea salt

1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2 Tbsp. honey (optional)

2. Pierce the hot dogs through the center lengthwise with a wooden skewer, leaving about 1.5 inches of exposed skewer at the top (to place the cheese star on later).

3. Twist a piece of breadstick dough in a spiral around the hot dog from top to bottom, leaving space (dough not touching). Repeat with all of the hot dogs.

4. Bake for 20 minutes or until the bread is golden brown.

5. Cut the cheese using a star cookie cutter. When hot dogs are cool, place a star atop each of the hot dog skewers.

6. Consider displaying them in a clear vase, in glasses, or in a Styrofoam block to make them stand up.

DIRECTIONS: 1. After dicing the ingredients indicated above, toss.

2. Stir the lime juice into the honey and drizzle as dressing over the salad mixture.

RED WHITE & BLUE STAINED GLASS JELL-O INGREDIENTS: I large box red Jell-O gelatin (any flavor) 1 large box blue Jell-O gelatin (any flavor) 2 packs of plain gelatin 1 can sweetened condensed milk DIRECTIONS: 1. In two separate baking dishes prepare one of the flavored Jell-Os, stirring in one cup of hot water with the package contents until dissolved, and refrigerate each overnight.

2. Cut the Jell-Os into small cubes.

3. Arrange and mix the Jell-O cubes in a separate 9 x 13 baking dish, preferably one with a lid for carrying and storing.

4. In a mixing bowl, pour the 2 packs of plain gelatin into 2 cups of hot water and stir until dissolved.

5. Stir the can of sweetened condensed milk into the plain gelatin mixture, mixing well.

6. Cool until at room temperature, then pour condensed milk mixture over the cubed Jell-O and refrigerate for 7 hours.

7. Cut into squares and enjoy!

13 TIPS FOR HOT WEATHER FOOD SAFETY

It’s

not hard to understand why July was designated “National Picnic Month.” The long, hot, sunny days of July are ideal for sharing outdoor meals and fun times with family and friends. Unfortunately, summertime heat also creates an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply rapidly, putting picnic-goers at risk for foodborne illness. Each year, food poisoning cases increase dramatically during the summer months. But there’s no need to move your picnic indoors! With just a little extra attention to food safety, you can ensure that all your yummy picnic fare stays safe to eat even on the hottest July days.

HERE ARE 13 TIPS TO HELP YOU KEEP PICNIC FOOD SAFE IN HOT WEATHER: It Starts with Cooler Safety 1. Fill your cooler to the brim and include plenty of ice. A full cooler maintains a colder temperature than a partially filled one.

2. Pack the foods into your cooler in reverse order. Place the foods you plan to use last into the bottom of the cooler; put the ones you plan to use first at the top.

3. Put drinks into a separate cooler, since it will be opened frequently. This will help the food in the other cooler stay colder.

4. Keep raw meat and poultry wrapped and separated from cooked items or foods, such as fruits and vegetables that will be eaten raw.

5. Do not transport your cooler in the hot trunk of your car. Instead, keep it with you in the air-conditioned portion of your vehicle.

6. When you get to the picnic site, don’t place the cooler into the direct sun.

Cover it with a towel, tarp, or blanket.

Be Smart About Food Prep 7. Hand washing, both before and after handling food, is essential. Bring soap with you to the picnic site. To kill germs, the rule of thumb is to wash for 84 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAGA ZIN E.COM

20 seconds. If you don’t have a timer or a watch with a second hand, wash for as long as it takes you to sing the Happy Birthday song or “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” twice. If no running water is available, use hand sanitizer gel or disposable wipes.

8. If you are grilling, remember that you can’t trust your eyes to tell you when meat is fully cooked. Just because a hamburger is brown in the middle does not mean it has reached a safe internal temperature. Use a food thermometer to determine the internal temperature of meat. Safe internal temperatures are: Poultry: 165 degrees Ground beef: 160 degrees Beef, lamb, veal, and pork: 145 degrees 9. Never put cooked meat back onto the same plate that held raw meat.

Similarly, never season cooked meat with any liquid or sauce that was used to marinate raw meat.

10. If you need to cook something in water, do not use water from a lake or stream even if it appears to be clean. (Why? Well, for example, a critter could have died and fallen into the water upstream from you!)

It’s best to bring your own water for

cooking and drinking.

11. Bacteria multiply fastest between 90 and 110 degrees. Do not allow food to sit out longer than one hour when the air temperature is 90 degrees or hotter. Even when the temperature is lower, do not allow perishable foods to sit out longer than two hours. Instead, be diligent about returning leftovers to refrigeration or an icy cooler.

12. After the picnic, if there is not enough ice left in your cooler to properly protect your leftovers, throw them away.

One Final Tip 13. When cooking outdoors, be on the lookout for UFOs (unidentified foreign objects)! Bugs, twigs, and other debris can fall onto your food while it’s cooking on the grill, of course, but there’s a more serious UFO that you should check for before you start to cook: a bristle from a grill brush. Be sure to thoroughly inspect the grill for UFOs before you begin to cook.

Following these simple, basic food safety tips can help ensure that your July picnics will be long remembered – for all the right reasons!

Safety First!

Fireworks can make a celebration special, that’s for sure. What’s a 4th of July celebration without a fireworks display? Fireworks at the end of a Dash game are the icing on the cake—especially if they won. But, what about safety? Being mindful of safety tips, especially when children are involved, is critical. Accidents happen so quickly.

Advance preparation and knowledge can make a fireworks experience much more fun for everyone. So, let’s get started…

SOME BASIC GUIDELINES* • First, if you’re planning a do-ityourself event in the neighborhood, keep several things in mind. First, not everyone enjoys the bangs, flashes, and noises associated with fireworks. Check to see if any neighbors have posted signs requesting courtesy with fireworks; PTSD and fireworks don’t mix well.

Let your neighbors know if you plan a backyard fireworks show, so they can plan accordingly.

• If it’s been especially dry in your area or if your neighborhood is heavily wooded, you may need to rethink setting off fireworks. Never light fireworks near dry grasses.

• Aim fireworks away from homes, shrubbery, trees, or any flammables. Keep unused fireworks away from the staging area until ready to use.

• Our pets are not fans of fireworks; they don’t know what’s going on with all those new sounds and sights. Many dogs have run away from home or gotten injured due to the terror they experience. Give neighbors a heads-up, so they can provide a safe place for pets while fireworks are going off.

• Adult supervision is necessary.

Over half of all firework-related injuries occur to children under the age of 16.

PLANNING AHEAD • Check to verify that fireworks are legal in your area and purchase from a reputable source.

• Be sure to read all instructions on handling and lighting fireworks well ahead of time.

• Have a water hose, bucket of water, and/or fire extinguisher on hand. Take time to review the steps on using the fire extinguisher.

• Be sure that the person(s) lighting the fireworks wears safety goggles, closed-toed shoes, and avoids any loose clothing.

SHOWTIME! • Light one firework at a time, leave the spectacular, show-stopping displays to the professionals. Have the fireworks lined up in the order you plan to use them and have someone else pass them to you as needed.

• Keep spectators well back from the display area and away from unused fireworks.

• To be safe, everyone should wear closed-toed shoes. Flip-flops and sparks do not go together.

• If a firework doesn’t go off, don’t approach it. Never attempt to relight it.

Douse it with water, soaking it thoroughly, then pick it up with a shovel and plunge it into a bucket of water.

• Sparklers are a favorite for kids of all ages.

Set some ground rules before lighting them up. No running, waving them at each other, and keep them at arm’s length. Sparklers burn at temperatures 15 times the point of boiling water.

Three sparklers held together are equal to the heat from a blowtorch.

To be sure sparklers are out, plunge them into a bucket of water.

• An excellent alternative to sparklers are glow sticks. They’re available in a variety of colors and shapes.

Perhaps the best way to enjoy a fireworks show is to attend one held by professionals.

There are plenty scheduled around the 4th of July at nearby lakes, games, concerts, or other outdoor areas. Many are free and open to everyone. Yes, you may be stuck in traffic when leaving, but seeing a professionally executed light show is worth a little wait now and then. Viewing fireworks over water is extraspecial, or when the show is set to music. Load up the car, grab some blankets or chairs, and head out for a show in the skies. classic banana pudding

we really consider ourselves from the South if we did not have a banana pudding recipe in our arsenal of Southern cuisine? Banana Pudding has a strong, genuine Southern identity that stretches back more than half of a century.

Originating in the late 1800s, the first banana pudding recipe appeared in fact not in a Southern periodical, but in the Massachusetts-based Good Housekeeping, where it was described as a layered custard and sponge cake and often times baked for as long as 45 minutes. Today, the invention of the vanilla wafer and other modern ingredients has transformed this recipe into the summer picnic staple we all know and love.

INGREDIENTS 3 cups whole milk 2 packages instant vanilla pudding 1 box vanilla wafers 3 bananas, sliced FOR THE WHIPPED TOPPING: 2 cups heavy whipping cream ¼ cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract DIRECTIONS 1. Beat pudding mixes and milk with wire whisk for 2 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, beat whipping cream, sugar and vanilla in a mixing bowl with whisk attachment until stiff peaks form.

3. Arrange wafers on bottom of a trifle or casserole dish. Top with layers of pudding and a portion of the sliced bananas.

Repeat all layers. Top with whipped cream mixture. Refrigerate until ready to be served.
