This

time last year we were just days away from one of the happiest days of our life, as we watched our oldest daughter wed her childhood sweetheart. As one expects with a July wedding, it was a very hot day, but we were thrilled there was no rain for the outdoor wedding. I’ll never forget watching her and her dad rolling up in the horsedrawn carriage in beautiful Tanglewood Park. The rest of the evening was filled with so much happiness and love that we never wanted it to end. Happy one-year anniversary to my daughter Briana and Jonathan! We’re so proud of you both!

What a difference a year makes. Fast-forward and I find myself in a very different situation. Having battled breast cancer since December, I am grateful to have chemo and surgery behind me. I start radiation soon and look forward to getting this chapter behind me as well. I’m so thankful for the wonderful medical team that has taken care of me thus far, and the love and support of my family and friends. I am humbled by it all.

The architectural design of the school is an outgrowth of the work of Maria Montessori (Italian physician and educator) who understood that the child needs to “live nature.” Toward that end, a unique feature of each classroom is its outdoor patio, extending the learning environment into the natural world.

Jon states, “Every detail in the indoor and outdoor learning spaces exists to afford children an inviting, safe space where they can learn at their own pace, satisfy their curiosity, and follow their passions.”

What is a Montessori approach?

When asked what makes a Montessori approach, Trish Corbett, Director of Admissions, shared the short answer, “We start with the end in mind.

We prepare our students each and every day to be successful adults in the 21st century.” The Montessori approach nurtures a child’s natural curiosity, fosters a deep love of learning and connection with nature, and promotes a more peaceful world…one child at a time. Churn added, “Two key tenets of an authentic Montessori approach are the importance of choice and the belief that children are active participants in learning throughout their academic careers. Teachers (called guides) thoughtfully prepare a learning environment and guide children in that environment to promote the development of the whole child. This approach, centered on providing ‘real world’ experiences, is time-tested and scientifically grounded with data that span over a century,” states Churn.

Gearing Up for the 2017 Cal Ripken World Series

Baseball will be invading Clemmons in a very big— and extremely fun—way this coming August.

The Southwest Athletics Babe Ruth League— that’s the premier baseball and softball organization in the Triad for players ages four to 18—will serve as the host of the 2017 Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series, August 3rd–10th, 2017.

Once Barry Leonard, president of Southwest Athletics, discovered Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Baseball was searching for the perfect host site for their 2017 World Series tournament, he set the wheels in motion to secure this exciting sporting event for the Village of Clemmons.

Without a doubt, the League was impressed by both the complex and its amenities, and the overwhelming community spirit and support that Clemmons has always shared for youth sports of every kind.

Talented teams of eleven- and twelve-yearolds from eight U.S. regions will compete at the Southwest Athletic Fields at Wilson Park, bringing excitement for spectators, and a golden opportunity for local baseball enthusiasts to share some volunteer time.

With the event expected to attract thousands of visitors to the area over the week-long tournament, the Clemmons community will be

blessed with the support of this year’s title sponsor, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, as well as what they hope will be an enthusiastic response from legacy players who have grown up and played ball here, and can’t wait to give back their time and energy to support a new generation of young players.

“Southwest Athletics has shown a strong commitment to the well-being of its players, and we are delighted to come alongside them at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to impact the health and wellness of all the young athletes and their families, as the official Health Care partner of Southwest Athletics,” says Cristin Ferguson, M.D., Associate Professor of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine chief at Wake Forest Baptist. “As the title sponsor for the 2017 Babe Ruth League’s Cal Ripken Major/60 Regional Tournament and World Series, as well as Southwest Athletics’ boys’ baseball and girls’ softball regular seasons, we will assist and educate players and their parents about sports injuries and treatments, while helping support two great events this year.”

Jon Marzano, a member of the Southwest Athletics Board of Directors, says the group is super excited about the World Series coming to town and notes that a successful run will make Clemmons a candidate to host future baseball events as well.

“This really will be a great economic boon for the community,” explains Jon, noting the benefits for hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses. “We are in contact with businesses about ways they can advertise during the tournament and create as much visibility as possible.”

Dedicated volunteers will also be huge to the event’s success, and many, many people—from civic groups to Boy Scout troops and countless individual baseball fans with a willingness to join in—will be needed to assist in a variety of ways throughout the seven-day tournament: traffic control, manning the gates, concessions, and, of course, souvenir sales.

President Barry Leonard also salutes the commitment of the families who are involved in the sport and wholeheartedly support their young players. “These families have had a whirlwind of a summer, and what will go on in Clemmons this August is the culmination of all the hard work and dedication of these players, teams, and their families throughout the spring season,” he says.

What Happens By Age Five Lasts a Lifetime

the past, children were considered ready for kindergarten if they could say the ABC’s, count, identify colors and write their first name. New brain research is helping us understand that there is much more to readiness than academics.

Readiness also means developing a group of skills referred to as executive function – skills used by all of us to organize, plan, remember things, prioritize and pay attention. For 3- to 5-year-olds, we see these skills in action when a child can follow directions, express his or her feelings using words, raise his or her hand instead of interrupting and adjust emotionally to expected and unexpected transitions in the classroom.

Children are not born with these skills – they are born with the potential to develop them.

Children who are easily distracted may disrupt the classroom in preschool, may struggle to plan and organize their work in early elementary, may become

adolescents who fall behind in homework, have difficulty completing projects and struggle to gain academic skills. Teachers can lose patience and disengage. These children believe themselves to be poor students. This negative feedback loop places children at risk for low self-esteem, depression and anxiety, dropping out of school, adolescent pregnancy or involvement with the juvenile justice system.

Teachers and other professionals involved with early childcare education are uniquely involved in the social-emotional development of young children.

That’s why Family Services, through its Forsyth County School Readiness Project (FCSRP), is placing mental health professionals in the classrooms of 3- and 4-year-olds in its Head Start program. These professionals coach and consult on-site so that teachers can maintain classroom environments that are rewarding to teach, less stressful to manage and more conducive to learning.

Because they are in the classroom and

not off-site waiting for referrals, coaches can introduce specific skills and strategies to teachers, enabling them to provide children consistent reinforcement within an emotionally supportive learning environment.

Within two years of launching FCSRP, 93% of the teachers reported reductions in behaviors such as hitting, running around the classrooms, crying and not following instructions as children increased their capacity for self-regulation. Our teachers report increased confidence in their own abilities to provide emotional support to the children, increased knowledge of strategies/skills to support children’s social-emotional health and a greater ability to manage stress within the classroom.

Promoting positive social-emotional development among our youngest children is far easier than trying later to address difficulty learning, difficulty forming healthy relationships and lifelong physical and mental health problems.

has been five years since Pro Dance Academy opened its doors and they have already outgrown their location across from Tanglewood.

This July, they are expanding to a 6500-square-foot, state-of-the-art, fourballroom facility just behind Mi Pueblo on Lewisville-Clemmons Road.

When asked what accounts for this need to expand, Miranda Lobs, owner of Pro Dance Academy, can’t point to just one thing. “We had no idea when we opened our doors five years ago how many students we would receive, let alone that we would outgrow our current location this quickly!

God has had his hand in our studio from the beginning and has blessed us beyond measure to be received so well in the Clemmons community,” she states.

Although there are many things, Miranda believes, that set Pro Dance apart from other dance studios, she confidently believes that one of the biggest factors making them successful is that they are truly more than just a dance studio.

While Pro Dance participates in all the same competitions as everyone else and receives all the same awards, what sets them apart, Miranda says, is that her dancers consistently receive the studio sportsmanship Spirit awards at these competitions. That shows their heart. “Our dancers are supportive, compassionate, and encouraging, not only to their fellow dancers, but to dancers at other studios,” Lobs states. “We try to show our dancers that great dance ability can be taught, but great character comes from the heart, and we are most proud of them when they can show love for their fellow dancers while also being talented at dance.”

While Pro Dance offers the same types of classes as other studios, with a few unique exceptions, such as their thriving clogging program, all-boys’ hip-hop classes, and college/adult age classes and audition prep, what sets them apart is their amazing staff. With five instructors and two new student instructors being welcomed this coming fall, Miranda affirms that the Pro Dance staff is amazing and upholds the “above and beyond” mentality toward their students that Pro Dance expects. “We are a staff that has pride in our product, loyalty to each other, and love for our students...and it shows,” she states. They foster an environment that goes beyond just teaching dance, Miranda claims, and is a reason their classes fill quickly, and a reason she needs to expand.

Pro Dance is also committed to being a low-drama zone. Lobs tells us that their dance families embrace their family attitude. “We do not tolerate gossip, toxicity or a ‘tear each other down’ mentality from anyone in our studio; [this applies to] students, parents, and staff alike,” Miranda explains. She tells us that the friendships that are formed between dancers in their classes are deep and lasting. The support that is shown from the parents is inspiring. And the passion and commitment that is displayed by the staff is deeply genuine.

It’s no wonder Pro Dance needs to triple their space. In a world where children are being broken down instead of built up, why wouldn’t anyone want to learn more than just dance at Pro Dance Academy?

This

is a phrase we don’t often hear in today’s world, except perhaps in a comedian’s routine. However, there is a very special place in Winston-Salem on a very special day, where people joyfully welcome our country’s newest citizens…at the Immigration Ceremony in the square at Old Salem on July 4th.

I strongly urge you to attend. It will boost your patriotic pride and strengthen your optimism for our country’s future, regardless of your political affiliations or lack thereof.

The ceremony itself is from 10 to 11 am and is enhanced with patriotic music by the Salem Band and an inspiring speaker (often a naturalized citizen). But the most dramatic part of the event is seeing the people walk across the stage to receive their citizenship papers. Most of them wave their small American flags as they cross. It is truly touching to witness their excitement and joy as they receive their citizenship certificate. Proud families and

friends applaud and take pictures.

After each person has received his allimportant documentation, the newest American citizens and all the guests are treated to lemonade and cookies, provided by Old Salem and served by The Battle of Shallow Ford, The Old North State, and The Colonel Joseph Winston Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

There are many countries represented.

The number can vary from 25 to over 100. Old Salem Museum and Gardens, Inc. loans the venue for this special day to the Immigration Office from Charlotte.

Sometimes there are also many styles of dress.

I remember one year seeing a striking couple dressed all in white Kenyan dress complete with headdresses. An onlooker may have thought it was their wedding day, but it was just as special to them to become American citizens that day, and

they dressed for it. It is truly a geography lesson to hear the names of all the countries, and a feast for the eyes to see some of the costumes. It is a powerful testament to the ideals and philosophy of our American democracy. It is a living history lesson.

Salem has the honorable distinction of being the first to celebrate our country’s Independence Day. Thanks to those record-keeping Moravians, we know that they prayed and thanked God that the war was over. (The national anthem had not even been written yet!) Although the early Moravians were pacifists, they served the cause of freedom by supplying goods and paying taxes to the new country.

Having come to America seeking religious freedom, those Moravians must have enjoyed celebrating their new country on July 4, 1783!

Take Back Your Life from Migraines Headaches are incredibly common. Up to 93 percent of people will experience some kind of headache in their lifetime.

And as headache pain presents itself— typically in the form of occasional tension headaches—the average person self-treats with over-the-counter (OTC) medication and continues with their day.

It is a strategy that often works—unless the headache is a migraine.

common headache medications more than a couple of times a week will inadvertently increase the frequency of their headaches. “It starts out very innocently,” said Dr. Bryson. “You have pain, you want to treat the pain, and you want something accessible, so you start using the OTC drugs. Before you know it, you’re getting headaches almost all the time.”

Migraine headaches are not like other headaches. They can cause severe, debilitating pain that lasts for days, and they often produce a number of other symptoms, including nausea and aura. Treating them effectively requires more than just a trip to the drugstore; it requires specialty care.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. There are many effective treatments that can prevent migraines or shorten their duration and severity.

The key to a better quality of life comes in looking beyond tried-and-failed methods. That’s why it is important for frequent migraine sufferers to seek out headache specialists.

“A migraine is a completely different beast,” said Juline Bryson, MD, a neurologist at Wake Forest Baptist Health. “It’s a complex neurological syndrome that causes the trigeminal nerve to flip out and the brain to slow down. It’s definitely not the type of headache where you just take an extra Aleve®, and it’s gone.”

Type of Treatment Matters Dr. Bryson explained that self-treating or not treating migraines could actually lead to more severe pain down the road.

“Pain begets pain,” she said. “Frequent activation of pain pathways makes the threshold for pain lower over time. So if you don’t treat the pain, the pain will start to come on more often.”

Overuse of OTC drugs can also cause problems. People who use

The Headache Program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center offers state-ofthe-art migraine treatment, including the use of leading-edge clinical trials.

For example, an upcoming trial will involve calcitonin gene-related peptide inhibitors, the first class of medication formulated specifically for a migraine.

Patients also have access to a variety of other medications and treatments, including holistic approaches.

“We take an integrative approach,” said Dr. Bryson. “We treat the whole person.

For a lot of patients this means they will take targeted medications; for others, it may also include lifestyle and dietary changes. We come up with the best solution for each person.”

Migraines tend to be genetic, so parents who are being treated for migraines may also have children who require treatment.

Stop Waiting Up to 18 percent of women experience migraine headaches, but many wait years to seek treatment. There are numerous reasons for this, said Dr. Bryson. Many women fear not being taken seriously.

They assume their headaches will be chalked up to “just stress.” Women also tend to put their pain on the back burner. “Migraine headaches tend to impact women the most during their reproductive years,” said Dr. Bryson.

“During this time they’re caring for others and putting their own issues last on the priority list. Women need to take their pain seriously.”

If you suffer from migraine headaches, don’t delay in seeking treatment. The typical patient can experience a greatly improved quality of life with the right therapies. Even those who are less likely to respond to medication due to opioid use may still find improvement through the use of integrative treatments and lifestyle changes.

“If you suffer from migraines, there really is help,” said Dr. Bryson. “You don’t have to spend days lying in a dark room, missing work or your kids’ soccer games.

The right medications can help you have fewer headaches. And when you do have headaches, there are medications that can dramatically shorten them. You don’t have to miss out on life any longer.”

Reynolda Celebrates Its Centennial with Major Exhibitions, New Book YEAR HIGHLIGHTED BY MAJOR EXHIBITIONS OF GEORGIA O’KEEFFE, FREDERIC CHURCH

hundred years ago this year, Katharine Smith Reynolds and her husband, Richard Joshua (R. J.) Reynolds, moved into their newly finished estate at 2250 Reynolda Road, a few miles from downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, headquarters of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Fifty years later, in 1967, the magnificent 64-room bungalow, set amid landscaped gardens and rolling hills, opened to the public as a museum dedicated to American art. Today, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Reynolda Gardens and Reynolda Village attract tens of thousands of visitors from North Carolina and beyond each year.

July 2017 commences a yearlong celebration of Reynolda’s centennial that will include landmark exhibitions, a new book, inspiring new visitor programs, and memorable events that will celebrate Reynolda’s past, as well as its expanding future as a leading cultural institution and destination.

SPECIAL PROJECTS & EVENTS SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2017—Reynolda: Her Muses, Her Stories, the first book to chronicle the stories behind the acquisition of select works of art at Reynolda, will be published. The museum opened in 1967 with nine paintings, acquired and donated by Barbara Babcock Millhouse, granddaughter of Katharine and R. J. Reynolds. Fifty years later, the museum’s permanent collection now numbers nearly 200 works spanning 250 years of American art, and is renowned in the art world for its connoisseurship. The Museum will hold two ticketed events, September 8th and 9th, to mark the 50th anniversary and debut the new publication.

NOVEMBER 21ST–DECEMBER 31ST, 2017—“Centennial Christmas” will feature historically accurate decorations throughout the house, carols daily on the house organ, and special tours of “A 1917 Christmas.” The Reynolds family moved to the estate in December 1917, so this Christmas season marks the actual centennial of the Reynolda Estate.

JUNE 2ND, 2018—Centennial Community Day, a daylong free festival, will bring thousands to the museum’s grounds and galleries. On this day, Reynolda House will debut a new, integrated Reynolda brand alongside a web-based tour that includes audio and video of people and places of the museum and estate never before shared. The tour is made possible by the largest federal grant ever received by the museum. The tour will bring more of the Reynolda story to visitors and offer new ways to engage with the art and estate. The tour will present local, southern and national stories, all using the museum’s collections and historic site to illuminate content, profoundly changing the visitor experience. FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL: Good Counsel

The

college admissions process can be a stressful time for students and parents alike. Will my child get into his first choice? How many APs should she be taking? What sort of SAT score does he need to get into my alma mater? What are colleges really looking for, anyway?

These are the kind of questions that Forsyth Country Day School’s college counseling office deals with every day. Helping students and parents answer these questions—and any others they may have as they navigate the college admissions process—is not only their job, it’s their passion.

“We want parents to know that we care about their child’s future, and we’ve been through it ourselves,” said Co-Director of College Counseling Virginia Perry. “It’s hard for parents. I’ve done it four times for my own children. We all want the best for our kids.”

Co-Director of College Counseling Lorna Hogan concurs.

“We’re a huge safety net,” she explained. “We think of your kids as our kids, and we want to help them not only find the right school for them, but to thrive as people.”

RELATIONSHIP: STUDENTS The key to helping students find the right college for them is building relationships. “We get to know the students as people first—it’s really about forming that connection,” said college counselor Sara Spong. “Once we know them, we can help them find their niche. We talk about how their strengths might indicate a major to pursue.”

“Everyone in college counseling was always there for me, was always helpful,” said Ben Merrick ’17. “I think college counseling at Forsyth is outstanding. My friends at other schools didn’t have anything like this.”

RELATIONSHIP: PARENTS Also key to a successful college counseling program is the relationship between college counselors and parents. For the counselors, that means being available to answer questions or address rumors parents may be hearing.

“Rumors come up about what it takes to get in at certain schools, and we want parents to contact us when they hear something—we cherish the opportunity to maintain contact with them,” Mrs. Hogan said. “We are in constant contact with the colleges, and we have the most up-todate, trending information.”

Jeremy Burnett, the mother of twins Ben ’17, who will attend Duke University, and Molly ’17, who will attend Middlebury College after a gap year, said that the key to college counseling was to trust the process—and the counselors. “It’s a scary process, especially your first time through,” she admitted. “But they have a system that breaks it down for the kids and parents. They give the kids responsibility, but just a little bit at a time so that it’s not too difficult to handle.”

Kellie Faulk, the mother of three FCDS alumni and one rising ninth grader, agreed. “At our first daughter’s College Night for Juniors, we were shocked to receive color-coded directions regarding the testing, application, and touring season Hannah faced,” Dr. Faulk said. “We had friends with kids in public schools who were struggling to navigate the complex system, while we were handed step-by-step instructions, along with someone there to guide us through it all.”

“The combination of fabulous faculty members with an advisor and college counselor all four years results in the ‘secret sauce’ that makes FCDS great,” Dr. Faulk stated.

Jacob Jung ’17 remembered that he found himself going to the college counseling office whenever he had a problem—which helped make the college admissions process less difficult. “It wasn’t as stressful as I’d heard. At times there was heat, but I had my counselor. She was a blessing, for sure.”

RELATIONSHIP: COLLEGE REPS The college counseling department also works hard to build relationships with college admission representatives. “The relationships we have with our college reps are second to none,” Mrs. Hogan said.

Seventy college reps visit the campus each year, and counselors make sure that kids who have expressed an interest in the college not only attend the visit, but get to meet the representative.

“It’s a two-way street,” Mrs. Perry said. “When you come to a college visit, you learn about the college, and that college rep learns about you. If someone has decided to apply, we make an effort to introduce the student to the rep, have them talk to them a little. Reps like that. They like to put a face to the name.”

Rahul Krishnaswamy ’17 remarked that the entire college counseling staff stepped in when he was hoping for admission to Duke (where he will matriculate in the fall). “They pushed really hard for me,” he said. “They e-mailed their admission

OUT & ABOUT in Winston-Salem ...with the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic

Bicyclists from around the United States and the world converged in Winston-Salem for the 5th-annual Winston-Salem Cycling Classic Race on Memorial Day weekend. The Classic has become an annual tradition in Winston-Salem, drawing thousands of fans to the festivities downtown, and throughout the neighborhoods of Winston-Salem. There are Criterium races on Saturday, the road races on Monday, and numerous family-friendly activities throughout the weekend, such as the Walk and Roll, Gears and Guitars concerts, kids’ zone, and amateur events.

The road race course winds out of downtown and then into neighborhoods of Winston-Salem. It’s quite a sight to see. First come the Winston-Salem Police Department vehicles to make sure the course is clear, soon followed by the WSPD Motorcycle Police leading the peloton of bicyclists, and the film crew riding beside the peloton, comprised of dozens of racers. Then come the chase cars for every team, loaded with extra bicycle equipment and painted with the sponsors’ logos. Finally, the EMS (in the event of an accident) completes the procession, which comes through repeatedly over an almost three-hour period for the women’s race, and an almost four-hour period for the men’s race.

One of the interesting side benefits for our community is that the road race brings people not only from around our area to Winston-Salem to watch the race, but also neighbors along the road course out to their front yards to socialize and enjoy the event with their neighbors.

For many who only have the chance to wave at each other as they’re off to work or school, it’s a wonderful opportunity to renew friendships and neighborhood ties.

Thanks to the help of many community-minded businesses and volunteers, and Winston-Salem Cycling, we are fortunate to host this world-class cycling event.

Why that particular experience is so often immortalized, is a mystery, and why is it that a grandparent is the one holding the cone? We all love ice cream and love sharing it—from backyard cookouts finished off with tubs of home-churned ice cream, to Sunday evening church socials or ice cream festivals. It’s time to celebrate ice cream!

What’s your favorite flavor? Based on statistics, favorites have been pretty consistent over the years. The top favorites are vanilla at 29%, chocolate at 9%, with third place shared by butter pecan and strawberry.

Fourth place is Neapolitan (for those who can’t decide among the top three, evidently). It’s interesting that vanilla leads by such a wide margin; maybe because it can be topped with anything for a change of flavor (much like tofu— not that tofu compares in any way to ice cream! Perish the thought!).

Where and who invented ice cream?

Ancient China gets the credit. According to history, Marco Polo brought ice cream back from his journeys and introduced it to the nobility. It remained a specialty in royal courts for many years and was only available to the rest of the population in the late 1600s. Kudos to Marco for having the foresight to bring ice cream back along with all the other treasures he discovered!

Have you ever tried a truly bizarre flavor, just to get bragging rights? One of those little taste spoons isn’t much; go ahead,

try it. For the adventurous, these are some ice creams considered unique (or weird) to a particular state in this country (check out spoonuniversity.com for the complete state-by-state list).

First up, the wide West. How about a big bowl of Prickly Pear ice cream found in Arizona? Colorado is not to be outdone with Honey Jalapeno Pickle ice cream. (A word to the wise—you may have to sign a waiver before trying flavors with peppers.)

Kansas offers Roasted Beets with Goat Cheese (The Office fans will have to try this one). How about Mountain Dew & Doritos flavor from Missouri? Idaho, where potatoes rule, has, to no one’s surprise, the Ice Cream Potato. Nevada’s contribution is Coconut Sticky Rice and Mango Swirl. A shop in Wisconsin offers Hearty Breakfast ice cream (with ingredients of French toast, bacon, and whiskey).

Moving north, an Ohio ice cream shop specialty is Lucky Charms. New York offers a Fried Chicken and Waffle flavor. A shop in Maine has Avocado Cayenne as their special taste treat.

And, not to be outdone, in the South, one Florida shop has Tequila Almond ice cream. In Georgia, keeping true to its Southern roots, one shop has developed Collard Green ice cream.

Locally, a recent Forsyth Woman’s “Rosey’s Review” of Providence Restaurant (located on University Parkway) mentioned their specialty ice cream—Pimiento Cheese with Texas Pete Pork Rinds. “I couldn’t imagine what it was going to taste like.” explained Rosey, “It was quite a tasty concoction, and one I’d definitely order again.” Kilwin’s, located in Thruway, offers a variety of ice cream flavors—from Marsh-Mallow S’mores to Pumpkin Pie, to Cappuccino Chocolate Chip, and many other choices.

Sneaking Healthy Foods into Your Child’s Meals

all want our children to eat healthier. Who hasn’t bribed, coerced, begged, or made up games to get them to eat healthy foods? In the end, they see right through us. The jig is up. Or is it? I suggest we roll up our sleeves and outsmart these little geniuses. Let’s get sneaky.

Maybe you’ve tried to disguise their veggies. Some parents have hidden veggies with ranch dressing, or broccoli with cheese. It may have even worked for a time, but this idea adds unnecessary calories and doesn’t really hide the flavors at all. What if I told you, your children will want to eat veggies for dessert, and they’ll even thank you for it?!

It’s true.

I was skeptical myself, so I tried this recipe, Spinach Brownies with Peanut Butter Frosting. It was delicious! Really.

SPINACH BROWNIES 1 cup pureed spinach 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ½ cup cocoa powder ½ cup flour ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ cup brown sugar ½ cup sugar ¼ cup salted butter—melted ½ cup chocolate chips—melted Preheat oven to 350º and spray 8 x 8 pan with non-stick spray.

Thoroughly rinse 4–5 cups of raw spinach and puree in a blender with 1–2 TBS of water (makes 1 cup spinach puree).

Mix cocoa powder, flour, and baking soda. Set aside.

In another bowl, mix butter and sugars, melted chocolate chips, spinach puree and vanilla.

Gradually stir dry ingredients into your chocolate spinach mixture, mix until smooth.

Pour batter in 8 x 8 pan and bake for 30–35 minutes or until your toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool.

PEANUT BUTTER FROSTING ½ cup butter—melted 1 cup creamy peanut butter ½ cup confectioner’s powdered sugar 2 Tablespoons milk With an electric mixer, blend butters. Gradually add the confectioner’s sugar and 2 Tablespoons of milk. Beat until fluffy (about 23 minutes). Add a little more milk if it is too stiff.

Spread on cooled brownies, refrigerate 1 hour before cutting.

Honestly, you can’t taste the spinach. My friend said it tasted like dark chocolate. People have begun using this pureed vegetable trick in all sorts of recipes. Here’s one for yummy chicken (and vegetable) tenders: CHICKEN (AND VEGETABLE) TENDERS 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs ½ teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon onion powder ½ cup flaxseed meal 1 Tablespoon grated Parmesan 1 cup broccoli or spinach or sweet potato or beet puree 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into strips or chunks ½ teaspoon sea salt Non-stick cooking spray 1 Tablespoon olive oil

LEARNING THE VALUE OF HARD WORK AND SEEING THE OPPORTUNITIES LIFE PROVIDES YOU Like many people today, Myron didn’t start out in the business he would ultimately make his lifelong career.

Instead, he came about his profession in one of the best ways ever, by discovering his true passion through fate.

After high school, he left the farm for the campus of NC State University and the engineering program. He got a glimpse of his future while he was a student on campus when he had the idea to start an investment club with his fellow roommates. After pooling together the combined small amount that college students can muster, he quickly realized there weren’t many financial advisors out there willing to work with them. The experience had a profound impact on him.

After graduating with a B.S. degree in engineering from NC State he worked in structural building design and field engineering for four years, when a friend, who was already an advisor, convinced him to attend a financial seminar. It was at that meeting that he discovered what he wanted to do as a career. So he took a year sabbatical from engineering, borrowed $10,000 on a home equity loan, earned his securities license and formed the beginning of what would become the Mitchell Wealth Management Group. Myron has been serving clients in Winston-Salem and the surrounding area for more than 22 years.

Myron is married to his wife Angel, and they have three children. He hasn’t forgotten his roots on the farm and has a place in Stokes County where his family enjoys the simple pleasures of nature, including; hunting, fishing, clay shooting and taking long walks around the farm.

The 25th Moravian Music Festival

July marks the 25th official Moravian Music Festival. First started in 1950, the festival, hosted by North American Moravians, takes place about every four years in different cities.

The last time the festival was hosted in Winston-Salem was in 2003.

“Moravians convene to celebrate their musical heritage with workshops and lectures, ensembles and hand bells, bands and orchestras, and lots of singing,” said Erik Salzwedel of the Moravian Music Foundation. “The festival attracts hundreds of musicians to participate and hundreds more to attend and enjoy the many performances of both new and historic Moravian music. There are programs for children, youth and adults.

The festival is a learning opportunity for singers, instrumentalists and directors (Moravian and non-Moravian) and shares practical ideas, skills and techniques for the musician, the musical group and the congregation.”

While many residents of the Triad area are familiar with some of the more commonly known traditions of Moravian fellowship, the festival will introduce you to even more!

“The festival highlights the treasure trove of early American Moravian music held in the archives, and promotes new compositions and hymn-writing as well,” said Salzwedel.

“The 2017 festival is based at Home

Moravian Church, Salem College and Old Salem, with concerts also at Calvary and Trinity Moravian churches and a final concert in Williams Auditorium of WSSU.” The history of the festival is fascinating!

Working with American-born and -trained conductor Thor Johnson (son of a Moravian minister), a group of clergy and laypersons in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, decided to hold an Early American Moravian Music Festival and Seminar, in Bethlehem, on June 26-July 2, 1950. “Since then, the Moravians have planned and hosted 23 festivals,” said Salzwedel. “As Moravians have become assimilated into American culture, having arrived as German settlers more than 275 years ago, it is important to connect to those roots of our past. The festival is the one place and time where we all convene and share and celebrate, not just church music, not just music, but our own uniquely Moravian musical heritage, together.”

Music is an art form that truly brings people together. “The Moravians brought music with them wherever they settled and became known for valuing music in everyday life and worship; they had the first organ in North Carolina, the first American organ builder, the first string chamber music written by an American and the first string chamber music written in America,” said Salzwedel. “We want to inform our

own members of the rich musical treasures that we have produced and [thereby] enrich the experience they each have in their own congregations of presenting this music effectively in worship. My hope is that one child will be transformed by the making of music in this setting. My hope is that several will sing new music, like it and take it back to their congregations. It may be 200 years old, but newly edited, it may be newly composed and heard for the first time! My hope is the audience will come to hear this music with open hearts and carry the joy of the Holy Spirit with them into the world.”

The Moravian Lovefeast is a beautiful tradition of the Moravian church, and the festival kicks off with a Lovefeast on July 23rd at 7:30 pm at Home Moravian Church.

The final Concert Band performance is 7:30 pm on Thursday, July 27th, at Calvary Moravian Church, located at 600 Holly Avenue in Winston-Salem; and the final Chorus and Orchestra Concert will be 7:30 pm on Friday, July 28th, at Williams Auditorium on the campus of WSSU. Both are free to the public! The 25th Moravian Music Festival will be held July 23rd–29th, 2017, in Winston-Salem. MOBILE YARN: A New Yarn-Shopping Experience

any yarn aficionado clearly understands, one can never have too much yarn.

Now, there’s a new game in town! We have a new opportunity to fulfill our need for yarn— Sticks & Skeins—a mobile yarn shop!

Meet Jennifer Wrights, owner/entrepreneur of Sticks & Skeins. “I’ve loved to knit, crochet, and cross-stitch all my life,” Jennifer shared.

“It’s part of my family background. My mom enjoyed crafts, and my grandmother loved to crochet and even taught classes in local department stores.” Jennifer has her family’s support and assistance with Sticks & Skeins. Her Mom, Faye, helps with the mobile shop, and her husband and son cover the technical aspects of getting the website going, as well as customizing the mobile store. Jennifer explained, “I’ve always wanted my own business, but not necessarily a brickand-mortar store. I saw a mobile yarn store concept on-line a few years back, and it gave me the idea to research starting a mobile yarn shop of my own.” Sticks & Skeins has been in development since July 2016, and officially opened for business last month.

How does a mobile shop concept work? As Jennifer explained, “Sticks & Skeins is available for private crafting parties, retreats, festivals, and, of course, individual fiber/yarn shopping.

Customers are welcome to contact us and request a store visit; we do ask for a couple of days notice. Basically, we bring our business to anywhere people love to work with fibers.

With permission of landlords, we can park our store for shoppers’ convenience.” Jennifer has flexible hours; for festivals/retreats, the hours mirror those of the event. As for how far she can go, the shop travels throughout North Carolina.

What is the shopping experience like? What is the inventory? There’s a step up into the shop, and once you’re inside, you’ll find it quite roomy.

There’s plenty of aisle space for folks to move around without feeling confined. The interior is white with plenty of lighting to showcase the yarn. Both sides have floor-to-ceiling custom bins filled with yarns of all colors and weights. “Sticks & Skeins carries yarns that may not be found in local shops. We offer products developed by independent yarn specialists, including custom dyes.” Also included are accessory items (needles, double points, circulars, interchangeable sets, crochet hooks, patterns, scissors, cross-stitch kits, and more). Jennifer is working on a line of custom stitch markers.

is the time for vacations; a break from reality and a trip away from home. However, sometimes vacations can be expensive, lengthy, and cause a lot of stress. There is one way to eliminate the possible vacation hassle and explore your own hometown—by taking a staycation.

Staycations have recently become more and more popular. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, this new type of vacation can be defined as “a vacation spent at home or nearby.” Normally, they involve day trips to local attractions. Looking at the Piedmont Triad, there are many places to visit on your family’s staycation this summer. Explore the attractions in your own city and start planning your staycation with the ideas below.

Experience Life as a Moravian – Our area is rich in Moravian history, so why not take a step back in time and experience their way of life? Old Salem Museum and Gardens and Historic Bethabara Park are just two places to learn about the Moravian heritage and its impact in Winston-Salem today.

Stop by the bakery in Old Salem for some delicious Moravian cookies and sugar cake.

Hike Pilot Mountain – Located in Pinnacle, Pilot Mountain State Park is the perfect place to spend some time outdoors this summer. The park offers many walking/hiking trails, camp grounds, and views of Sauratown Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are two distinct features to the mountain, the Big and Little Pinnacles, with the Big Pinnacle also known as The Knob.

Splish Splash at a Waterpark – One aspect of summer is being in the water, whether it be at the beach, pool, or waterpark. In the Piedmont Triad, there are several places to perfect your swimming skills and have fun sliding down waterslides. The Peter S. Brunstetter Aquatic Center at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons is complete with a lazy river, lap pool, splash pad playground, and two slides.

Another staycation water attraction is Wet’n Wild Emerald Pointe in Greensboro. At this waterpark, there is something for everyone, including the Soak Zone, Shipwreck Cove, Happy Harbor, and lots of water slides. Are you a daredevil with heights? If so, make sure you try the Daredevil Drop, which slides you down a 76-foot-steep water chute.

Shop till You Drop – Hanes Mall, Thruway Shopping Center, and local boutiques are just a few places for you to find that new outfit, purse, and more.

With over 200 stores, Hanes Mall is one of the largest malls in the region and has signature department stores, such as Belk, JC Penney, Dillard’s, and Sears.

As for Thruway Shopping Center, there’s a little bit of everything for shoppers, with the unique range of stores. Lastly, follow the “shop local” motto and visit local boutiques. A few of my favorite in the area are Penny Lane Boutique, Mainstream Boutique, and Southern Ties Boutique.

Take a Tour of Historical Places – Whether the tour is on foot or in a car, learn more about the history of the Piedmont Triad by visiting historical places. Stop at the famous shell-shaped Gas Station on East Sprague Street in Winston-Salem or visit the West End Historic District downtown. While in Clemmons, visit the Village Hall and Stagecoach, the Philip and Johanna Hoehns (Hanes) House, and the Clemmons Milling Company.

Staycations give you a chance to explore and learn more about your hometown. Take time this summer to have a few day trips in the area. You’ll be glad you did!

a world where women typically cook most of the meals at home, but men are more well-known as leading chefs in top-notch restaurants, it can be easy to get a little discouraged as a woman trying to make a name for herself as a chef. Second Harvest Food Bank’s Triad Community Kitchen understands the benefits women bring to the culinary profession as a profession, which is why they have several women helping to “run the ship.”

In speaking with the women behind Triad Community Kitchen, it is clear they give all they have to this mission. “To ‘run our ship’ you have to be flexible, hardworking and passionate about our mission and our program,” said the team. “You have to be able to roll with the punches and keep going! It takes equal parts intellect, compassion and creativity. You have to be able to think outside the box and always keep those we serve at the forefront.

You have to have a deep respect for our mission and the services we provide, all while adapting to a constantly changing environment filled with challenges, success and life-changing opportunities. You need a team of people who share the same vision, goals and commitment for a job well done. One must believe that the journey will prove itself to be difficult at times, but [that] persistence and selfdiscipline will get you there as a team. The work being done at Triad Community Kitchen is making a difference, and it will continue to make a difference as long as it gets the support it needs from the community. No matter what happens with the economy, there are always people in need of help, and the statistics of those suffering from hunger are unacceptable.

“We help individuals that are unable to gain training elsewhere and give them the tools that are needed to succeed,” they said. “People come in with very little hope, with no direction and nowhere to turn. We want to provide all of these students with a skill set that will allow them to set a successful pattern for their lives and their families—financial and otherwise. We change their thinking by recognizing the unlimited potential they have; we remind them that they are valued and important, that they matter. When [we] take the broken, the forgotten and those perhaps deemed as ‘damaged’ and help to lift them, we are sending a strong message of tolerance, kindness and brotherhood to our children and our neighbors.”

There are many ways in which these women change lives, but they can’t do it alone, and there are several ways to help! “Hope for the future is continued growth in all our endeavors,” they said. “I hope that with God on our side, we can expand our model throughout our region and beyond, offering those in other communities the opportunity to help themselves out of generational poverty. Others can help by promoting the school and the services offered; by visiting our restaurant, meeting our students and telling others about our program and its mission; and simply by spreading the word and supporting Triad Community Kitchen Providence. Also, consider sponsoring a student. Our program’s cost for each student is around $4,000, but we only charge our students $385; however, many of them can’t afford that. Your $385 sponsorship provides them with 12 weeks of training, a one-week internship and a lifetime of dignity and opportunity. BY DEBBIE LINVILLE Each month I spotlight two books guaranteed to delight readers and provide fun activities to further extend the meaning of each reading experience. With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 33-year teaching career, literacy expertise and a passion for creating joyful readers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

Giant Squids: The Largest Creatures on Earth Lurking far beneath the surface of the world’s oceans, where the water is inky blank and icy cold, lives the largest of all cephalopods…the giant squid. For centuries, this mystic creature has frightened fishermen and claimed the starring role in such legendary tales as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and more current titles such as Harry Potter and Finding Dory. Previously relegated to folklore status and scientific “best explanations” as pieced together by sightings and clues left behind by carcasses washed ashore, this enormous creature was captured on film in its natural habitat in 2012, thanks to oceanographer and biologist Edith Widder’s invention of a soccer ball-sized lure that mimicked the movement of a struggling jellyfish.

GIANT SQUID Award-winning Candace Fleming asks as many questions as she answers about the mysterious “giant of the dark seas” in this informative, highly engaging picture book.

Complimenting the wellresearched and cleverly written text is the stunning artwork of Caldecott Medal winner, Eric Rohmann. Just as scientists and fishermen have pieced together information about the giant squid over centuries, author and illustrator have assembled characteristics of this remarkable cephalopod, one word and one brushstroke at a time. SQUIDS WILL BE SQUIDS: FRESH MORALS, BEASTLY FABLES Whenever this highly acclaimed duo gets together, readers can be assured of a treat. Scieszka and Smith have discovered a way around the often frowned-upon practice of gossiping, by following the lead of Aesop, a Greek slave and storyteller, who is credited with over 600 fables.

Jon Scieszka shares his simple philosophy of the fable: “If you can’t say something nice about someone, change the guy’s name to Donkey or Squid.”

A host of characters, from a Piece of Toast & Fruit Loops to the Duckbilled Platypus & BeefSnakStik, ensure this modern collection of 18 fables is a delight for readers young and old. The use of creative, whimsical illustrations and varied fonts adds a layer of playfulness. The title of the book is from the fable of Deer, Mouse, Rabbit, & Squid. Trying to please everyone is often a challenging task! After Squid repeatedly responds that every idea his three friends have is “boring,” Squid goes home, and the other three critters take off to do as they please.

COMIC STRIP FABLES

In Fleming’s prologue, she tells readers that if you cannot see something, you must take whatever clues you have, and dream it. Prior to 2012, no one knew exactly what the giant squid looked like—it was left to the imagination.

Scieszka and Smith give readers much to enjoy in this highly engaging book of “beastly fables with fresh morals about all kinds of bossy, sneaky, funny, annoying, dim-bulb people.”

Each two-page spread shares a modern day fable, utilizing a different artistic style. For example, Smith uses a comic-strip-style approach to “show not tell” the animated expressions of the cast of characters in the fable from which the book title emerges…

Squids Will Be Squids. In like manner, select one of the sayings common to Aesop’s Fables (from the list below) and create a fable of your own with talking animals as the main characters. Use artwork and add speech bubbles to tell the fable. There are many comic strip templates available online; a terrific one is available on kidsactivityblog.com. Be sure to share your fable with someone special!

1. Envision a sea creature that could live near the bottom of the ocean floor, hidden from view.

2. Draw what you imagine with as much detail as possible. Be creative—the more unique and colorful, the better!

3. Write (or have someone scribe for you) a list of the sea creature’s parts; give as much detail as you can.

For example, arms shaped like lollipops; fins as big as airplane wings; skin that looks like a zebra.

• Think before you act.

• Slow but steady wins the race.

4. Give your description to a family member or friend and have them draw your imaginary sea creature.

• Whatever you do, do it with all your might.

5. Compare their drawing to yours!

• There are two sides to every truth.

• Beauty is only skin-deep.

Empowering Children to be Smart & Safe

We

tell our children from the time they are able to understand our impassioned words to be smart and safe when out in the world. And, often, we wonder if our tips and strategies are enough, or even heard; yet, we continue to talk openly about safety while continuing to learn various beneficial strategies. You may discover one of your brilliant suggestions truly saved the day!

THE VALUE OF TRUST Under the banner of “safety,” the parents of loquacious children have, perhaps, a more challenging job. Some children are openly friendly and will not only talk to strangers, but divulge key information such as the home address, Mommy’s telephone number, the names of siblings, and how many dogs are contained in a fenced backyard.

TIP: Try acting out a scenario with your child’s dolls. Impress on them whom they can go to if they are ever separated from their caregiver. In addition, as you shop with your child, take the opportunity to play a game of “I-Spy—the employees.” Help them recognize a store’s employees by a uniform or badge, for instance, and who would be a go-to person, such as a cashier, receptionist, security officer, or a mom who is with children.

TIP: While we tell our children never to talk to strangers or receive a gift without asking an adult first, children can break the rules of safety if they are scared or feel unsafe. This may be defined as finding a safe place to go or to seek a person who can help.

And, if they are grabbed, to scream unrelentingly as loud as possible!

HOME PROTECTION The home needs to be viewed as a fortress of protection. It has keys, sometimes codes, passwords and security systems, and other numerous secrets. All children must understand that the secrets of the home are not to be carelessly revealed to anyone, especially a best friend. The spare key placed underneath a rock near the back porch is one such secret.

TIP: Remind children, especially teenagers, the value of not revealing that they are home alone. This includes not answering doors to strangers or posting the notice on social media.

While open conversation is beneficial, talk to your children about an action plan. Knowing in advance what to do in case of a home or neighborhood situation will help your child remain calm and in control.

TIP: Differentiate for children an “okay” and a “not okay” secret, and why even good friends should not be told key information. Establish a family rule of no secrecy. Children must feel that it is okay to come to parents if a “not okay” secret came with a warning or consequences.

TIP: For everyone in your family carrying a phone, create a separate list of key contacts. Time may be a factor in situations where your child will need to quickly find a name and call.

SOCIAL MEDIA Social media sites are, essentially, a live

journal. There is temptation to reveal the deepest thoughts and feelings to a screen, hit “enter,” and walk away.

Once sent, the words cannot be taken back or deleted. Encouragement, even a feeling of empowerment, is often felt when the writer receives “likes” or “positive comments.” The question is, who else is watching?

Parents can help children feel safe and protected by teaching the rules of social media.

TIP: One important rule is, never to reveal when the home is occupied or empty. If leaving for a weekend or long trip, never reveal this information or pictures until the family is home.

TIP: While the home network must be protected, children should be made aware never to click on alluring sites or talk with strangers.

TIP: Encourage your children never to save passwords on the computer, and always to “log out.”

Children who befriend the family, which includes parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, on social media will not only also receive an important source of protection themselves, but will, in turn, be less likely to act in a dangerous or secretive manner.

OPEN COMMUNICATION Listening helps you stay connected to your children while keeping them safe. Ask them open-ended questions to learn how they would respond to situations, while providing guidance.

When children feel they can ask or tell a parent anything, they are more inclined to openly reflect and develop good judgment in precarious situations.

When Best Friends Bully

The

term “bully” generally implies a rough-and-tumble delinquent who terrorizes other children in a school or neighborhood. He or she may be stereotyped as friendless, with inattentive parents or being from an inadequate home. As parents, we want our children to avoid these troublemakers for fear their safety will be compromised, or they will be negatively influenced. We caution our children, give them tips to help offset potential issues, and instruct them to tell their teachers if they are threatened.

But what about their friends? What do you do when you observe your child’s friend (even best friend) engaging in dominating or bullying behavior?

This type of bullying may not consist of overt behaviors, but take slight and passive forms. It may range from passive aggression (threatening to pull friendship or start a rumor) to manipulation (if you’re my friend, you’ll do this for me or give me that), to voyeuristic suggestions (encouraging another child to do something inappropriate just to see what will happen).

There are strategies we can use to help empower our children against a friend-bully.

Make time to have a private conversation with your child. Open the discussion with an open mind. Note, we should go fishing for information, but we should not force our children to make statements. Boys in particular may have a hard time vocalizing the issue, as they tend to share an unwritten Code

of Ethics regarding “ratting someone out”—even when it’s not a friend.

Start the conversation by presenting an example to which your child can relate.

Offer a personal experience or reference a favorite movie or book, such as, “Do you think Cameron felt hurt when Ferris told him he could find a new best friend?” or, “Was Lightening McQueen being a good friend to ‘Mater’ when he tricked him to remove the tire boot?”

Ask open-ended questions, such as, “Do you remember when…?” “What did you think of that?” “How did (would) that make you feel?,” “Do you ever feel like [insert name] does that to you?” Refer to step one—keep an open mind and a closed mouth when you hear your child’s responses. We’re looking to empower our children with the skills they need to stand up for themselves.

Equip them with the skills needed to handle the issue themselves. As tempting as it is, it is impossible to tell your child that they can’t be friends with someone. Instead, give them the skills to grow the existing relationship, or to end it in a healthy way, which is a skill that will serve them for the rest of their life. Ask your child, “What can you do (or say) to stand up for yourself?” If your child struggles to answer this question, perhaps you could suggest statements such as, “I don’t like it when…,” “Okay, we’ll play your game, but then we will play mine,” or “That’s not safe; let’s do something else.”

Practice the skills you’re giving your child. Do some role playing and let your child try these skills on for size before

they wear them in a real-life situation.

Praise your child for having the courage to stand up for him or herself! Positive self-esteem is one of the greatest gifts—and the most fragile—you can ever give your child. Your confidence in his or her abilities will bolster their own self-esteem when they are confronted with bullying behaviors. Let them know by making statements such as, “I know you will make good choices,” “I’m so proud of the friend you are,” or “It’s okay to stand up for yourself; I trust your judgment.”

It’s completely normal for parents to want to fight our children’s battles for them (especially us over-protective Mama Bear types). But that should be a last resort. For several reasons. First, our children need this skill. They need to know that their opinions, beliefs, and feelings matter. We need to teach them to have a voice that defends themselves, because we can’t always be around. Secondly—children are amazingly resilient. Once they handle the situation, they’re done and will move on. When parents get involved, they may fight the fight far longer than the children…and if you’re friends with the other parent—that can destroy YOUR friendships.

Whether your child is being bullied by a mean kid at school or their best friend— it is all about power and control…and it’s NOT okay. We all experience it at some point in our lives—it’s as inevitable as a first zit or a first crush. But we can empower our children from a young age, so they know how to handle a bully.

Activities to Help Children Foster a Love of Reading

the month of July, students are happily basking in the midst of summer vacation, without the slightest worry about the impending school year. While the routine of school has been replaced with a relaxing and care-free schedule, one educational task is still needed— reading. Research has concluded that children who do not read during the summer could lose up to three months of progress. With a minimum of ten minutes of reading daily, the goal of surpassing the end-of-year level can be quite simple to attain. Through the guidance of book lists and a number of engaging activities, children can keep on appreciating the splendor of summer while continuing to learn and read.

Public Library One of the best ways to acquire high-interest books for your child is to receive a recommendation from your local librarian. He or she will be able to share vital news, such as popular titles or a great series. The public library often features a reading contest, not only to encourage reading among students, but to enable them to participate in the many activities offered during the summer months.

Some libraries will have movie nights or scheduled game days, and feature exciting presentations in June, July, and August. Visiting the public library throughout the summer will boost interest and help young children to delight in the routine of reading.

Audio Books If you are planning a long car ride, consider bringing along a few audio books that would appeal to the entire family. You may be surprised to hear fewer requests to use the bathroom or cries of, “How much longer?”

Instead, every passenger will be keenly listening to the narrator’s voice, awaiting the next line. To help you select the right audio book, please be aware that children are able to listen to books up to two years above their reading level. To ensure your child can follow the story, it is important to ask questions as you are listening. Lastly, listening to audio books will improve the skill of listening and retaining information. While not everyone has the keen ability to listen, with time, the skill of becoming an auditory learner will improve.

them to read speed limit signs, interpret road signs, and read the names of various businesses and restaurants.

Also, try these other activities: • EARLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Allow your child to write the shopping list. Whether they are practicing writing your words or spelling each word on their own, writing, especially in color, is visual and will assist a child to remember.

• ELEMENTARY AGES: Leave hand-written letters to your child, listing chores or reminders for the evening activities. It may even be fun to leave more than one letter!

• PRE-TEENS AND TEENAGERS: If you are a working parent, begin the tradition of writing a letter to your child. Start reading her book, or make a recommendation to read a novel or series together, and discuss it through e-mails.

The Power of Color We often use color to help our eyes locate information quickly. How often have you underlined a phrase with a red pen or a yellow highlighter? When color is used, information is more likely to be remembered. Consider how you use color to emphasize a point, a word, or a picture.

• Children who have trouble pronouncing a word may need to “see” it differently. Try emphasizing a letter(s) or an entire word in color. (Present consonants in blue and vowels in red.)

• Allow a young child to take a “picture walk” before reading. She will likely be prepared for the events of the story and can then read with more confidence.

• Before discussing a story, first invite your child to illustrate it. Details that may not be revealed in writing may be included in the picture.

THE BRIDGE

I

had a dream once that was simple in nature, but very profound to me at the same time. I dreamed that I was in New York City, of all places, bearing in mind I’ve never visited there before. To make matters more disconcerting, I was driving by myself with no knowledge of where I was going.

The next thing I know, I’m on this giant bridge going upward over what I can only imagine is the Hudson River. I can see clearly the huge, tall, solid iron-and-concrete structure of the bridge reaching towards the sky as I climb further and further. Interestingly enough, I’m not scared; I’m intrigued, as I closely watch the road in front of me and quickly make my ascension towards the pinnacle of the old bridge.

I’m moving along smoothly, even though I have no idea where I’m going or where the other side will lead.

As I approach the top, just before I cross over to begin making my way down the other side something very strange happens. For what seemed like a long moment, but most likely would have been only a couple seconds if it were real, the car moved forward and downward, but I could no longer see the road. I knew I was headed onto the other side in the same direction and was in no way in danger of going off the bridge. However, I still felt the fear and uncertainty that I could not see the road in front of me.

In fact, all I really saw was the sky. I was aware of my tires touching the pavement of the bridge, and my equilibrium warned me I was going over the peak. My sense of logic told me to be patient and, eventually, the car would complete its motion downward, and I would once again see the road

and, to a lesser degree, the direction I was headed in. But at that moment I felt uneasy, similar to that feeling of being on a roller-coaster just before you make that first big plunge, and your stomach goes up into your throat. However, the stomach roll feeling didn’t occur because I thought I’d be making a fast, turbulent, slide down the other side. My speed was constant and steady. The reason was simply because I couldn’t see the road. In that moment of not seeing the road ahead of me, not knowing with 100% certainty, other than my basic human logic, that the road would reappear soon, I felt somewhat scared.

My logic was confirmed as I made it to the top and continued down the other side with the pavement in full view. I now had the road to follow, even though I was still lost in the city. That was okay though, because wherever I was going, I knew a road was going to get me there, and eventually, I’d figure it out.

How many times in life do we have a plan (a.k.a. a road) that directs our goals, our desires, whether immediate or long-term, and depend on that plan to achieve those things we want? Now think, how many times has that plan we conceived been halted, diverted, or changed in some way, and we’re left feeling lost, confused, and uncertain about what we’re supposed to do next? And then as life would have it, an answer (the road again) appears and we can continue either with the same goal or desire, or with an alternative that works even better.

The next time this happens to you, just remember to pause, breathe and relax. You’ll get through it because the road WILL reappear on the other side. You may still not know precisely where you’re headed; nonetheless, you’ll be on the road at least to get somewhere.

A Historic Day in Our History

day of the calendar, we can learn intriguing facts regarding our country’s rich history. Significant names, places, and events can foster a feeling of patriotism, respect, and emotion; yet, these feelings are often heightened on the day we celebrate our country’s independence. To judge by a letter of President John Adams to his wife, Abigail, he believed the day “…ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of the continent to the other.” His words were a premonition of truth.

Although Adams did not necessarily provide the correct date, July fourth has become an inspirational day of joyous beginnings and bittersweet endings.

1802: West Point Military Academy in New York opens.

1803: Although the Louisiana Purchase was signed on April 30th, the official treaty is received later in Washington D.C. and announced to the American people.

1817: Construction begins on the Erie Canal in Rome, New York.

1826: President John Adams dies. His last words are, “Thomas Jefferson survives,” yet he is unaware that his good friend, Thomas Jefferson, has died a few hours earlier in the day.

1828: To compete with the Erie Canal, Baltimore had sought to have a connection to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. On July 4th, construction begins on the Baltimore-Ohio, widely known as the B&O, railroad.

1831: In Boston, “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” is first performed.

1855: Walt Whitman had spent most of his life revising his book of poetry titled Leaves of Grass, which began as a book of 12 poems and was expanded by the final revision to 400. The first edition is published on July 4th in Brooklyn, New York.

1862: Alice Liddell, a child friend, inspires

Charles Dodgson, known as “Lewis Carroll,” to create a story about a bored young girl who goes looking for adventure during a family boat trip on the Thames River. Ironically, after several failed attempts at publication, including a print run of 2000 copies, Alice and Wonderland was published in New York in 1866 on the same day the story had first been imagined.

1939: On the initial “Old Timer’s Day,” the first uniform, Yankees #4, belonging to Lou Gehrig, is ceremoniously retired.

1863: Boise, Idaho is founded and named the state’s capital.

1970: Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40” debuts on the radio.

1884: Before she became “Lady Liberty,” the official name of the Statue of Liberty was “Liberty Enlightening the World.” As a gift from the French to America for having abolished slavery in 1865, Gustave Eiffel, who designed and constructed the Eiffel Tower, was given the task of building the statue as well.

Her “reveal” occurs on July 4th in Paris, and Lady Liberty arrives in New York harbor with great fanfare the following June.

1984: At the Firecracker 400 race, Richard Petty wins his 200th career victory in Daytona, Florida.

1894: Lyrics to “America the Beautiful” are published.

2009: Eight years after the 911 attacks, the Statue of Liberty’s crown is reopened to the public.

1931: Celebrations for America’s independence begin to change. The first fireworks display is held at Cleveland Stadium.

1959: Old Glory is unfurled to honor the statehood of Alaska and reveal the 49th star.

1960: The 50th star, representing Hawaii, is added.

1997: NASA’s Pathfinder becomes the first U.S. spacecraft after 20 years to land on the planet Mars. (The mission takes seven months and covers 20 million miles.)

2004: In a solemn ceremony, the first cornerstone of the Freedom Tower is laid at the site of the World Trade Center in New York City.

2016: NASA’s Juno spacecraft arrives in Jupiter’s orbit.

What will occur on Independence Day this year? While there are diverse opportunities to gather with family and good friends locally, just remember, as a spectator, you are part of our great nation’s history of celebration, whether in the midst of pomp or parade, shows or sport. Campfire Eats

the year, men and women, boys and girls anticipate the opportunity to sit in foldable chairs surrounded by a brilliant starry sky, a blazing campfire, and good conversation. As the center attraction to most gatherings, the food is what encourages individuals to accept an invitation to incredible “good eats.” Campfire food is much more than a tin-can-meal movie-goers often witness in Western films. In fact, it is quite the opposite. If they are able to bring a multitude of supplies, from aluminum foil and several Dutch ovens to a percolator, the well-prepared campers can easily make a meal and dessert worthy of five stars…providing, the ingredients and supplies are well planned in advance! This summer, consider adding a bit of pizzazz to a Tuesday or Friday night. A campfire meal may become a weekly anticipated family event!

Aluminum Foil Easy to transport and clean up with the snap of a finger, aluminum foil appears as a secret weapon in cooking. For the main meal, create a bowl or square with tall sides, approximately 18 inches by 12, with “heavy duty” aluminum foil. In the center, you will have a bowl to cook and eat in, once it has been removed from the fire (and cooled.) Consider making individual pockets for each member of your group.

KEY SUGGESTIONS: • First, coat the foil with cooking spray; then, place the ingredients that require more time to cook, such as meat and potatoes, on the bottom. And always include vegetables to prevent the meat from drying out.

• If your “bowl” ingredients are heavy, you may want to use two sheets of aluminum foil.

• Be careful when using olive oil. It may burn you or the meal; therefore, drizzle lightly.

• The bowls must be sealed. If steam escapes, the contents will burn or dry before they have a chance to cook.

• Place your meals on the coals, not necessarily directly in the flames of the fire.

TEX-MEX CHICKEN: In a Ziploc bag, combine four boneless, skinless chicken breasts; one can of 15- oz. navy beans, drained and rinsed; one can of 10-oz. drained diced tomatoes; one can of corn bits; and one Tbsp. of Mexican spice blend (or more to your taste). Scoop out equal parts of the mixture into each foil square; then fold to ensure it will not leak or escape steam. Place on the grate of your campfire for up to 25 minutes, turning packets carefully to cook the contents evenly. Sprinkle with cheese and green onion before serving.

The possibilities and ideas are endless—from fish and herbs to chicken, potatoes, and carrot strips. Your favorite meals can easily be made in an aluminum foil bowl. For sides, wrap a potato, sweet potato, or corn-on-the-cob in foil and allow the enflamed coals to cook. Place your curiosity aside, the taste will surprise you!

Dutch Oven Although greater in weight, the Dutch oven is very simple to clean, especially if the kettle is still warm. Try making a breakfast soufflé, a low-country boil, lasagna, or a finger-licking cobbler.

(It may be wise to bring several Dutch ovens to your gathering.)

TIPS TO COOKING: • If the ground is cold or wet, place a fireproof barrier between the ground and your coals. (An old cookie sheet works great!)

• The ashes will reduce your heat; therefore, be aware of the moment to start adding more charcoal. (Weather conditions also will affect how long your charcoal lasts. One briquette equals 10 degrees of heat.)

• Keep your Dutch oven off the ground and consider hanging the kettle for convenience.

PEACH AND BERRY COBBLER: Spray the Dutch oven first with cooking spray before adding two 16-ounce cans of sliced peaches (do not drain), one pint of fresh blueberries, a half-cup of cake mix, and 1/3 cup of sugar.

Stir evenly. Afterward, sprinkle ground cinnamon on top of the cobbler. Allow to cook for 30 to 45 minutes. The top should be golden brown and crusty.

Summer, fall, winter, or spring, campfire cooking is a unique way to enjoy the splendor of the outdoors with the people you most enjoy! Cheers!

of my favorite things about summer is the Fourth of July! Every year, I can’t wait to celebrate our country’s birthday with a hamburger, hot dog, parade, and by ending the day with fireworks. While fireworks can light up the night sky with beautiful designs, they can also be dangerous and frightening to some. If not handled appropriately, burns and eye injuries can occur. Take a look below for “Fireworks Safety 101.”

• If at all possible, leave the firework displays to the professionals. While it is not illegal to use fireworks at home, it is more dangerous. If you do decide to set off fireworks yourself, never make them yourself, and always buy legal fireworks. If the product is legal, there will be a label stating the manufacturer’s name and instructions. If there are any questions about the legality of fireworks, check with your local police department. Be sure to store them in a cool, dry place.

• Kids should never play with fireworks. Sometimes fireworks can backfire or shoot off in the wrong direction. The best tip is point them away from homes and buildings. Keep them away from flammable substances, and dry grass and plants.

Always use them outside, and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby. Another important tip to keep in mind: light only one firework at a time and never re-light a dud. After lighting them, move back quickly. Always soak the used fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them away.

• When using fireworks on your own, don’t hold them in your hand or have your body over them when lighting. Eye protection is highly recommended.

If an eye injury occurs, immediately go to the hospital. Don’t touch, rub, or flush your eye out with water. Instead, it is suggested to take a paper cup and cut out the bottom. Place it around your eye and keep it there to prevent touching it until you can receive medical attention. If you are burned by fireworks, remove clothing from the burned area and run cool, NOT COLD, water over the area. Also, be sure to notify your doctor.

• Don’t forget about your pets. Every year on July 4th, more pets get lost than any other day of the year. This is because animals have sensitive ears and the boom of fireworks is louder for them than for humans. Because of the noise, they can be frightened.

Your pet will be startled by the sounds, just as you are by loud sounds. Their heart rate will increase, as well as their adrenaline and stress hormones. Some tips to remember are: never bring them to a fireworks show, and if fireworks are being used near your home, make sure your pet is safe and placed in an interior room. If it is scared by the noise, try to cover the noise up by playing soft music and making it feel loved. Never shoot off fireworks, sparklers, etc. near pets. Just like humans, fireworks can have a mind of their own and go in another direction. If your pet does run off, make sure it is wearing its up-to-date identification tag. Fireworks for animals aren’t the same as thunderstorms. If your pet is young, it is possible to desensitize them to loud noises. The most important thing to remember is to stay calm and make sure your pet is safe and happy during fireworks season.

• Use common sense with fireworks. If you are unsure about what you are doing, don’t do it. Spend time with your family and go to a fireworks display. There are many shows during the summer, especially for the Fourth of July. Instead of worrying about what could happen, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Fireworks are a part of summer. They are unique, colorful, and exciting to watch. Just remember to be safe and careful, no matter if you are watching them or setting them off yourself.

I Can’t Believe You Asked That?

What Not to Say to a Pregnant Woman

Congratulations! You’re having a baby! Your emotions are all over the place—from pure joy,

to fear about the responsibilities you’re facing (especially if this is your first). Your family and friends are thrilled, too. Now that you’re pregnant, here come the stories and advice. Unfortunately, some well-meaning folks enjoy nothing more than sharing their personal trauma stories of childbirth and what their pregnancy was like. It seems the worse, or more drama-filled the story, the more likely they are to share it with you. That, coupled with the personal questions that come your way, make the long-ago custom of retreating from society during pregnancy sound like something worth considering. What are some questions or comments you’d just as soon not be asked, or topics you really don’t want to discuss?

You sure do look pregnant. Are you having twins? Or, the opposite—you don’t look pregnant. Are you eating enough? The less said about weight, the better during and after pregnancy. The social pressure to gain the right amount and then lose it as quickly as possible puts unhealthy pressure on a woman at a time when her health is so closely aligned with her baby, and it sets unrealistic expectations.

Were you trying? Really, is that anyone’s business? Best to assume that was uttered without thinking in a moment of surprise. The question deserves no response.

Can I touch your belly? This one is baffling. In this age of personal space, why does everyone, including strangers, think it’s okay to put their hands on a pregnant belly? The general answer is “No.” Say goodbye to sleep and any time to yourself. Wow, thanks for that positive snapshot of motherhood! Granted, getting your routine can take a while, but you will find a schedule and plan that works for your family.

Do you know what you’re having? Yes, it’s a baby. Okay, sarcasm aside, with the popularity of reveal parties, some parents really want to be surprised. The practicality of knowing the gender aside, there’s such anticipation, and whoever is in the delivery room gets to find out first.

Are you planning to have more children? Unless the person is a census taker, it’s really not relevant.

Then there are the comments and advice that begin with “You should . . . (do this, take that, get rid of pets, get a pet (it’ll be good for the baby to grow up with an animal buddy), baby proof, bottle-feed, breastfeed, use cloth diapers, use disposable diapers,” and so on and on). Exercise patience, they’re trying to help. Everyone who ever gave birth has their own opinion on how to care for a baby and what a new parent should and should not do.

What’s the best response to pregnancy news? “Congratulations! Happy for you! You’ll be a great parent! Let’s have a baby shower!”

Lather Up! Tips for Protecting Your Skin in the Sun

summer comes around, many people see it as a chance to spend more time outside and in the sun. And why not? The days are longer, and the temperatures are heating up. However, there is one reason not to spend too much time outdoors, and that is the sun. During this time of the year, the sun is stronger, with a greater possibility of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays causing damage to your skin, as well as your eyes. Over time, exposure to the sun can cause skin to lose its elastin, causing skin to stretch and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching. Also, bruises and tears will take longer to heal. Other ways sun exposure can affect your skin is by causing freckles, wrinkles, and premature aging. Skin cancer can occur from unprotected exposure to the sun. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and one of the most common cancers among adolescents and young adults. Non-melanoma skin cancers, including basal-cell carcinomas and squamouscell carcinomas, are less deadly, but if left untreated, can cause serious health problems. Your skin isn’t the only thing affected by the sun’s UV rays. Eyes can be damaged, causing cataracts and pterygium, which is when tissue grows and blocks a person’s vision. While these effects of being outside can sound scary, there are ways to protect your skin and eyes while still enjoying summer.

COVER-UP: Yes, summer is the time for shorts, as well as short-sleeved and sleeveless shirts. However, try to wear a hat and clothes that protect your skin from the sun. Wide-brimmed hats are suggested, because they cover your neck, ears, eyes, forehead, and whole face. A trick to test whether or not your clothes block out the sun is by placing your hand between a single layer of clothing and the sun. If you can see your hand through the fabric, there is little sun protection. Also, don’t forget your sunglasses! It is recommended that at least 99% of the UV light be blocked by the glasses.

WEAR SUNSCREEN: No matter how long you’ll be out in the sun or the time of the year, putting on sunscreen should become a daily habit. When choosing a sunscreen, there are several things to consider. According to the American Cancer Society’s guidelines, read the labels before you buy. All sunscreen labels should meet the following requirements of the US Food and Drug Administration: sunscreen should have an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher and have broad-spectrum protection. Broad-spectrum protection means the sunscreen will protect against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are long ultraviolet waves that go deep into the dermis, your skin’s thickest layer, causing premature aging and skin cancer. UVB rays usually burn the superficial layers of your skin, resulting in sunburn. Lastly, note the difference between water-resistant and waterproof. No sunscreens are waterproof. However, if the label states they are water-resistant, the sunscreen is meant to stay on for 40 to 80 minutes while you are swimming or sweating. It is recommended to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, and more often if you are active outside.

LIMIT EXPOSURE: There is no better place to be than outside during the summer, making this sun tip a little difficult. The sun’s UV rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try and limit your exposure during this time (yes, that is a large part of the day). If you must be outside, find a shady spot to protect yourself. One way to test the sun’s intensity is by doing the shadow test, which states that if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

Using the tips above will help you protect your skin and eyes from the sun. However, not all sun is bad. A little sun exposure helps your body kill bad bacteria, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, and can help with depression. Just remember to limit your time and protect yourself in the sun!

“If Jesus sets you free, you will be really free.” ~ John 8:36 Think about the word “free.” It can mean you get something without paying for it. You see a sign that says “FREE PUPPIES.” “Can I have one, Dad? Please, pretty please? It doesn’t cost anything!”

“Free” might mean you get to do whatever you want to do. Mom says, “You have fifteen minutes of free time. I’ll call you when it’s time for dinner.” In the same way, some kids whoop and holler on the last day of school, “Yay! No more homework! We’re free!”

On the 4th of July, we celebrate the birthday of The United States of America. “The StarSpangled Banner” is the special song of our country. The song ends by saying that our flag (the Star-Spangled Banner) will keep flying over our “free” land. What do you think it means to live in a “free” country?

Now think about the word “sin.” Even if we live in a free country, sin keeps us locked up like animals in a cage, or like someone in jail. Sometimes we are mean or don’t tell the truth. That’s called sin. When we forget to be helpful and kind, that’s sin, too.

Sin is always trying to trick us. No matter how hard we try or how much we want to be good, we can’t stop sinning all by ourselves. We can’t get out of that icky cage. The verse above says that Jesus can set us free. When we ask Jesus to be our Savior, he washes away the bad things we have done. He has the key, and he unlocks the door of the cage of sin and sets us free. Then he teaches us to love others, to be helpful and cheerful, and to be honest and kind.

If you have Jesus in your heart, sin isn’t the boss anymore. You can say to yourself, “Hey! I don’t have to be mean to that bully down the street.” “I’m not going to sneak an extra cookie.” “I’m going to be friends with the new kid in Sunday school, even though it’s kind of scary.” You are free because Jesus paid for all your sins. When you feel like doing something mean or naughty, or just plain wrong, don’t let sin win! Ask Jesus to help you do what is right. Then you will be free…really free!

THE FAITH OF TRAVIS

Christian radio friend, a man younger than me, a husband and father of two young children, died recently after a truly valiant battle with cancer. His faith and bravery in the midst of this fight inspired thousands, myself included. He never once doubted God’s goodness, even as his body was being overcome by an illness that he knew God was fully capable of healing. He trusted that God’s plans are infinitely better than his own.

In fact, just a week ago, when Travis knew that he would be leaving us very soon, our friend Bill asked him, “Travis, what do you want me to tell people?” Travis replied, “That God is incredible and he is always working out his plans.”

Oh, Lord, to have that kind of faith....

Thank you, Travis Culver, for sharing your journey and your faith. You have inspired me and so many others to deepen our trust in God, to lean more fully into His grace and to more intentionally appreciate the days and loved ones we have been given.

What was supposed to be her husband’s job also becomes hers, as she finds herself chairing committees, leading the women’s ministry and working in the nursery on Sunday. She’s also expected to be a model wife, mother, and Christian.

More than one pastor’s wife has said it seems that the church assumed she would be part of a 2-for-1 special when they hired her husband.

Think about your church. Are there any written or unwritten expectations placed on your pastor’s wife? Are they fair? Are they realistic? If you’re not sure, why not #BeTheOne to invite her out for a cup of coffee to ask her about it.

Freedom Through Faith

This

year marks the 241st anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, when our founding fathers declared their freedom from the oppression of a dictator-king. And so as our country celebrates freedom, so can Christians celebrate freedom through Jesus Christ!

For many, the idea of Christianity and freedom do not go hand-in-hand. They wrongly assume Christianity is a limiting and restrictive “religious” practice, full of “thou shalt” dos and don’ts. They believe Christians aren’t allowed to have fun, and that going to church is designed to chastise and punish. Yet, the fact is, the truest form of freedom is only found through faith in Jesus Christ.

In Romans 6, the Apostle Paul speaks of being dead to sin, and alive in Christ. Verses 6–7 say, “For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.”

Because without Christ, we are slaves to sin.

When Adam and Eve first sinned, they created a perpetual disease of sin that has infected every person who ever lived… except one—Jesus Christ.

Just as cancer can eat away at the body, including the good and healthy cells, so can sin eat away at our lives. It doesn’t matter if we’re “good” people by the world’s standards. It’s against God’s standard that we need to measure ourselves. And the simple truth is— we don’t measure up. And we never will.

Enter Jesus Christ, who is God in human form. He came to earth to liberate us from the disease of sin.

Galatians 5:1 states, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

It’s not that we’re never going to sin. Sin is always going to plague us; but when we accept Christ’s gift, we become more empowered to fight it. 1 John 3:6 says, “No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.” Because through Christ, we can live our lives more like Jesus! We can turn away from sin, whereas, without Him, we are helpless against sin.

After accepting Him, He has promised that God will never allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to say no. He will always provide an escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). We won’t be perfect (no one is but Jesus), but we have the freedom of assurance that we can never lose our salvation (Romans 8:38-39).

And therein lies true freedom.

With all that said, Christianity isn’t a religion; is a relationship with God, through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Unlike religions in which the believer seeks to prove love for, and devotion to, the supernatural being of his or her focus, Christianity is about accepting the love and devotion that Christ freely gave us through His death on the cross and resurrection. Instead of trying to figure out what we can do gain God’s love, He’s already proved His love for us by allowing His Son to be crucified!

He has freed us in order to redeem us.

And with that, let freedom ring in your life through the joyful and complete surrender to God’s will and purpose for you.

come from a long line of fishers: fishermen and fisherwomen. My family and extended family are full of those who love to “feel the thrill,” that is, the thrill of excitement and rush of adrenaline when a fishing line instantly tightens, the bobber sinks, and a fish is hooked. Have you ever caught a fish? Do you know the thrill?

We have a small fishing pond behind our home. My great-uncle built it years ago and stocked it with fish so he could always have a place to go and feel the thrill.

The fishing we did was rarely for food or trophies, and it was never out of necessity or glory. It was for the joy, the thrill. I grew up watching family humbly and quietly sit at the water’s edge and live out this fishing rhythm of catch and release, catch and release…catch and release.

Last Saturday I sat with my Uncle Michael while he fished that pond and was reminded of the liturgy of life. The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us, there is a time

and season for all things: a time to catch and to let go; a time to gather together and to disperse; a time to wait and a time to act.

uncertainty. Rather, we feel the thrill of God at work in us and through us when the line is tight, we’re hooked, and we hold the tension.

As Christians, we believe there is something particularly valuable in pursuing a life patterned from the witness of Gospel narratives. Jesus regularly gathered with crowds to teach, heal and love. Jesus also regularly left the crowds to be alone, enjoy solitude and to pray. He was neither a groupie nor a loner. A life of faith is so much more costly than a strict obedience to moral law: “always catch” or “always release.” It is an unjust oversimplification of God’s grace in Christ through the Holy Spirit to reduce a life of faith to just one set of cultural expectations. We are to live and move and breathe by the Spirit, not as we please, nor according to rules any singular local church or denomination has set. We are not to waiver back and forth like a wave tossed by the wind, nor are we to settle into a mushy middle of

Faithful living requires of us to both catch and release, to gather and to be sent out, to worship and to serve. Christ calls us to be consistent and to faithful self-examination, so that we may more faithfully reflect the Kingdom of God here on earth. God’s Kingdom, which is also full of tensions. A Kingdom which exists now and not quite yet. A Kingdom of grace and peace of recreation, as well as restoration. A Kingdom we hope for in the life to come and a Kingdom that we experience in the present, as we see it breaking into our here-and-now.

It’s a GRAND Life -

Quickly Fly the Years

“Turn around, and they’re two; turn around, and they’re four…” I took a bit of poetic license with those lyrics, but for those of you with grandchildren, you understand. Every visit with my grandchildren has made me more aware of how fleeting time is.

I remember when my own daughters were young and, after a particularly trying day of too much to do, not enough time in the day, and the three of them annoying each other, saying to their dad, “They were impossible today. I couldn’t get half the things done I needed to for having to deal with their driving each other crazy, and me along with them.” I will never forget his response, “You know, in a few years you’ll wonder how they grew up so fast.” He was so right! Just like the song, I turned around, and they were women with babes of their own.

I think this may be one reason I want to spend as much time as possible with these precious children. Like most young mothers, I felt like I was going non-stop from the time I awoke until long after our girls were in bed. Even on the days that were slower, it wasn’t possible to devote hours of individual time to each of them. Our eldest was not quite 3½ when her sister was born, and was just six when our youngest came along. I was lucky to be a stay-at-home mom, but giving my full attention to one of them was often interrupted. When I am with my grandchildren, I can give them the time I didn’t always have to give their moms. It is all the best time—have fun, play, explore, read, sing, be silly, be quiet, be close, listen, and learn about these fabulous little children.

I love that we live a little

less than four hours away from two of our daughters, and only 90 minutes away from the other. Being that close, we are able to be there for the significant life events and get visits in fairly often. This is important to me. I want to make memories, not only for my grandchildren to look back on, but to bring a smile to my face when I recall our times together and the joy they bring me.

Our youngest grandchild celebrated her first birthday in April.

I could clearly remember the day she was born and wondered how an entire year had already gone by. She seemed to go from a babe in arms to Miss Independent in the blink of an eye. I know that she will not remember the thousand times I sang “Soft Kitty” to her, rocked her, read to her, fed her, or stayed with her, but I will, and will treasure them. In a few years, she will be able to remember and recall times in her life, and I want to be a part of those.

I will turn around, and suddenly she will be the age of our oldest grandchild, who should be about four, but in reality, is nine. Yep, blink of an eye. And while wondering how she could possibly be nine already, her brothers somehow turned six and three. It is the same with our other two grandchildren.

For a year and a half, they lived in Texas for their dad’s work.

We saw them, thankfully, more than I imagined we would, but as our grandson was born there a mere three months after they arrived, I missed a lot of seeing the baby to toddler stage. And his sister went from being a toddler to a little girl.

They will not remember our visits, but I always will and hold them as dear as the first time I held each one of them soon after they entered the world.

I know they can’t stay little forever, and I wouldn’t want them to. I look forward to watching them grow and change—seeing how they mature; watching them move into interests beyond princesses, trucks, and Star Wars; giving them sage advice when asked, and hugs when needed; being not just their Gigi, but someone they can trust, want to visit, and who loves them so very much. No, I want to see what the future holds for them—I just want to turn around a little bit slower.

Leveling the Playing Field

Most

of the time when someone says, “You play like a girl,” it’s not a compliment, but if someone says, ‘You play like Abby Hunter,’ take it and run with it, because that’s as good as it gets!

Abby Hunter, a 12-year-old 6th-grader at Meadowlark Middle School, has been playing baseball for over half her life. At the age of 5, Abby played T-ball, and since then she has progressed in her abilities, and played on teams where she is the only girl. To get to the level that Abby plays at now, she not only had to have talent and skill, but the support of her parents, Brad and Shauna Hunter, and her two older brothers.

“Baseball has given Abby an opportunity to compete and direct her focus. She’s able to follow instructions well, which has helped her play to at a higher level, earning five all-star titles,” said Brad Hunter.

With her excellence on the playing field, getting caught up in what is needed for the game would be easy for Abby, but her mom helps to keep her grounded. “I remind Abby that her talents on the field are a gift, not to be taken lightly. We’ve worked hard to help her stay humble, while baseball and the team environment have helped develop her confidence and character. We remind Abby that whatever you do in public, people are watching. Having talent like Abby has, is a gift, and she could lose that gift, so she should be grateful for it,” Shauna stated. Although Abby focuses a great deal of time

on baseball, she knows that her education is important, and for the past three quarters she has been on the A-B Honor Roll at Meadowlark Middle. She also plays basketball for Davie Fastbreak, a girls’ team, and strength trains with Dave McConnell. But you can bet that when Abby is on the field, her priority is her team and the game at hand.

Abby sees herself as just another teammate, and is focused on making whatever contribution she can make each game. Until recently, Abby was playing on three teams, The Meadowlark Mustangs, the Clemmons Colts Travel Baseball team and the Southwest Athletics Indians, the team she continues to play on now. So, why baseball, you might ask? Girls play softball, right? For the time being, with her highly developed skills and competitiveness, Abby plays baseball, although she’s not ruling out a transition to softball to further her opportunities in high school and college. It’s her skill set that has helped to prove her abilities on each team and shown coaches how she can contribute to their teams.

Those abilities on the field won Abby a coveted spot on The Meadowlark Mustangs. After days of try-outs, with over 40

boys, Abby, was not just the only girl on the team, but she was also the only 6th grader.

For the past four years, Dave Lowe, Coach at Southwest Athletics and of the Clemmons Colts, has watched Abby continue to grow as a player. “Abby is a fierce competitor with a great work ethic. She is very coachable and always maintains a positive attitude. Her mental toughness is also something that has made her successful. Abby has been selected and played on the All-Star team the past five years, with her greatest accomplishment being her ability to maintain a high level of play in a male-dominated sport. Abby has earned the respect of her peers through hard work, determination and a true spirit of teamwork,” Dave Lowe commented. To be part of a team, players have to come together, and being the only girl on a team could cause an issue...but not for Abby.

“The guys on my teams are easy to get along with, and I’ve never had an issue. My coaches have always been supportive, and I’ve had the moms from opposing teams congratulate me for doing what I’m doing,” explained Abby. To some extent, Abby is blazing a trail for girls to come, but Abby is also following in the footsteps of Campbell Hutcherson, who played with the Southwest Little League until she was 14 years old, moving later to softball for better scholarship opportunities.

After graduating in 2016 from Forsyth Country Day School, Campbell earned a softball scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill, where she is the starting first baseman. Campbell commented, “I experienced so much as the only girl on the team. I have two older brothers, and I wanted to be just like them, so I wanted to play baseball. I played with the same group of guys for so long at Southwest that they became brothers to me, and I knew they always had my back. My teammates never looked down on me or thought I couldn’t achieve anything they could.

I’m so proud that Abby is going for it! For her and any girls who may follow, I say that baseball made me a better player, now that I play softball at UNC-Chapel Hill. I am a stronger player for sure.”

2017 Brighter Days Children’s Camp Hosted by Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care

WHEN: July 13th–14th, 2017 (Thursday and Friday) from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm REGISTER BY: Thursday (July 6th, 2017) with some flexibility on late registration For the past fifteen years, Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care has offered a unique day camp program for children who have experienced a loss in their lives. Learning to cope with loss is difficult for most people and can be especially so for children. Brighter Days Children’s Camp is designed primarily to provide coping skills and tools as they move through the grieving process. The camp is planned with plenty of activities, as well as counselors to guide them based on their ages. Stacie Adams, Kids Path Bereavement Counselor, heads the program.

The camp staff is comprised of eight full-time counselors and two or three volunteers. The ratio of staff to campers is generally 1:3, so there is plenty of personal attention and interaction.

Typically, about 30 children attend day camp and come from Yadkin and surrounding counties (Wilkes, Surry, Stokes, and Forsyth). Some campers may already be working with one of the counselors, and some may continue to meet with counselors after camp.

Surveys are taken to identify additional needs, once camp is complete.

What’s a day at camp like? It’s busy. . . .

Check-in begins at 9:00 when kids are dropped off. Tote bags are given out as kids arrive, so they can begin decorating and personalizing them. Kids are encouraged to bring a picture of the person they lost, if possible.

Once check-in is complete, small groups are set up by ages, and activities begin such as:

Joining in a relay race or some physical activity.

ART THERAPY: With some soft background music, kids can create a painting, drawing, or other form of art to release emotions. “In past camps, one camper drew a brightly colored picture and then covered it with brown paint to depict their current emotions,” explained Kristie. “Art is an excellent medium in which to show how someone is feeling, especially when it may be hard to verbalize.”

GAMES: “An emotion game is played by tossing a ball which lands on an emotion word (such as crying or sadness),” shared Kristie. “This gives a child the opportunity to describe what that emotion feels like to them.”

SNACKS: Kids may decorate cookies, with different colors provided. Each color has a meaning, so each person’s cookie will reflect his or her feelings.

LUNCH: On Thursday, chicken tenders and potato wedges are on the menu. One of Mountain Valley’s own hospice nurses and her family, who make some great barbecue, are donating Friday’s meal.

WATER ACTIVITIES: Camp would not be complete without some water fun. On Thursday, campers will visit the Dobson pool (and will be picked up there at day’s end).

On Friday, campers will enjoy the splash pool at Dobson First Baptist.

PROJECT: This year campers will be painting birdhouses to take home with them. At the end of camp on Friday, a special dove release is planned. Last year, campers had a butterfly release. The release is to symbolize letting go and starting over.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: At the end of camp, a memorial service is held as a tribute.

SO YOU THINK YOU WANT TO HOMESCHOOL?

So you’ve decided to homeschool? That’s awesome! If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent a lot of time pondering the pros and cons of taking this step. It’s a lot of work just to make the decision.

Of course, once you decide that homeschooling makes sense for your family, the real work begins. It’s not unlike starting a college term paper: lots of options and tons of empty space.

When I started researching, I quickly reached the conclusion that there are approximately ten trillion ways to homeschool. So where on earth do you begin? I mean, it’s only your child’s future hanging in the balance, right?

This month’s article is a two-parter. First I will share the three steps to help you navigate the tough decisions. Then, in August, I will share four more ways to help you make this first homeschool year a success.

TIP ONE: Craft a Vision Start by taking the time to analyze why your family decided to homeschool in the first place. Those reasons are probably fresh in your mind, so go ahead and write them down. Rank them in order of importance, if you want. You are creating a vision—a focus—that will guide you through the decisions that follow.

For example, if you’ve decided to homeschool because the actual physical school situation doesn’t work for your children, but you still want them to be learning the same things as their peers

at the same time, your vision might lead you to virtual schools, where content is delivered online, and a licensed teacher handles the teaching and grading.

However, if you have strong feelings about what is taught and when, and if you want your child to have a very different school experience, you’ll need to choose a basic curriculum that reflects your goals. As a former teacher with strong opinions about curriculum and learning styles, I quickly realized the latter was the best choice for me.

TIP TWO: Ask Tons of Questions Your next step, if possible, should be talking to actual people who homeschool. So your husband’s third cousin’s sister-in-law happens to be your Facebook friend and seems to enjoy homeschooling? Send her a private message. That family at church? Ask if you can chat sometime. The next-door neighbors? Knock on their door. I am fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends who are homeschoolers, and every single one I reached out to was more than willing to write me a book on what they do, what they use, what they love, what they don’t, and why. I started to notice some common themes in the responses I got: some curriculum options were clearly more popular than others, and some teaching and organizational styles were working really well for a lot of people.

When I started the process of setting up our own school, I started with the things that came highly recommended. It narrowed my focus and saved me a ton of time and stress.

TIP THREE: Attend a Conference You should also consider attending a homeschooling conference, if possible.

There are several in North Carolina throughout the school year, and they feature speakers, as well as a wide variety of vendors. This is a great chance to see curriculum in person, instead of researching online. Of course, a conference can easily become overwhelming, because, as I mentioned above, there are so many choices.

If you have done your research with homeschooling families beforehand, you can focus on the curriculum you already think you want to use, instead of trying to look at everything.

These things take time; try not to begrudge yourself the hours spent analyzing, thinking, considering, talking to other moms, and watching other families. You aren’t wasting time. These early steps are an investment in your children’s education, and they matter.

Try not to rush them.

Mouth breathing – commonly a problem when a child has a stuffy nose or sleep habit that leads to a dry mouth.

Teacher of the Year – Jennie Hawk

Jennie Hawk,

a first-grade teacher at Ibraham Elementary, has been named this year’s Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools Teacher of the Year! After graduating from West Forsyth High School, Jennie attended Appalachian State University and transferred to UNC Greensboro to obtain her bachelor’s degree in science/special education. She completed her student teaching at Ibraham Elementary School and was offered a job when she graduated.

“I taught students with behavioral and emotional disabilities for the first seven years at Ibraham, and then transitioned into the regular education classroom,” said Jennie. “This is my fourth year teaching first grade.

All 11 of my teaching years have been at my current school. During my time in special education, I became a nationally board-ertified teacher.”

While it may seem like being named Teacher of the Year just happens, the campaign is actually quite intense.

“The process for being named WSFCS Teacher of the Year has been a journey that started back in December and continued through May,” said Jennie. “The journey started within my own school. Each elementary, middle and high school selects a teacher within its own school as the Teacher of the Year. My school chose me! Each teacher that was selected within his or her school completes a portfolio that is submitted and reviewed by the district’s Teacher of the Year committee. From there, the committee selects the top 10 teachers [who] are observed teaching in the classroom by the committee members. These observations could take place one to seven different times and are unannounced. Based on the observations, the committee then selects the top four finalists, [who] are interviewed by the committee, and a decision is made. Whew!”

After making it through the first couple rounds, Jennie began to get excited about the possibility of being named Teacher of the Year! “There are a ton of amazing educators in our district, and I honestly just did not think I would be selected, so it absolutely was unexpected and a huge surprise,” said Jennie. “My family actually knew about it ahead of time, so they could make plans to be there for the big announcement. I had family that drove in from out of town, family that took off work, and even one of my Pastors came, which reflects their support and excitement for everything that has happened. My co-workers have been supportive and encouraging throughout the whole process. They truly are my school family and have helped shape me into the educator I am today. The other day, one of my co-workers came by to congratulate me again and thank me. He was at a local

Walmart and had on his school ID badge. He was stopped by someone while shopping who said, ‘Hey, you work at Ibraham. That’s where the WSFCS Teacher of the Year is from!’ My co-worker said he was proud to teach at Ibraham!”

Jennie wears many hats in the classroom to make sure she gives her students a well-rounded education. “I believe I make a difference for my students because of the investments I make into their lives as a whole child,” said Jennie. “I am not just there to teach them academics and help fill in their academic deficits. Most of the students I teach come to me with social and emotional deficits as well, and it is my job to pour into those cracks. When I walk into the classroom, I am not just Jennie Hawk, the teacher. I am Jennie Hawk the actress, advocate, cheerleader, mediator, singer, entertainer, therapist, visionary and teacher. Relationships and developing a rapport with my students sets the tone that we are a ‘school family,’ and as a school family, we flourish, grow and succeed. I also believe I make such a difference for my students, because I bring high energy and engagement 180 days of the year. They know that Mrs. Hawk on day one is going to be the same Mrs. Hawk on day 180.”

Jennie said one of her biggest pieces of advice is for teachers to develop their own creative teaching tools. “I would encourage other teachers to be themselves and develop their own craft,” said Jennie. “Teachers can be inspired by other educators but, at the end of the day, it’s what is going to work for your classroom and for your students. I would encourage teachers to be bold in their classrooms and their pursuits to grow and shape the minds of our students. Step out of the box; be creative.

Don’t be afraid of change. Our world is constantly evolving and changing, and, as educators, we should, too. Love what you do—passion is contagious. Teaching is the one profession that all other professions stem from. The teaching profession is not for the faint-hearted and every day is not rainbows, butterflies and kittens.

Teachers often have to go deep into the trenches, but the seeds sown into a child’s life, relationships built and student growth make it worth it. Teachers can and do make an impact that causes an endless ripple effect.”

This recipe requires a little kitchen science. The drinks have to be layered according to sugar content to stay separate, with the drink/juice with the highest sugar content on the bottom, so read those labels!

INGREDIENTS:

Watermelon slices

2 (8-oz.) cans refrigerated crescent-roll dough

Blueberries

1 (14-oz.) package cocktail franks, rinsed and drained

Wooden skewers

Ketchup (optional)

INGREDIENTS:

Star cookie cutter

Mustard (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Red juice/drink with higher sugar content (such as a cranberry-cherry juice or red, sugar-added Kool-Aid)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Slide 8 blueberries onto a skewer

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Divide dough along perforated lines into 8 triangles. Cut each triangle into thirds.

“White” drink with less sugar content than red drink (such as a non-alcoholic piña colada)

2. Slice the watermelon the thickness of the star cookie cutter and use the cookie cutter to press out star shapes.

2. Place 1 cocktail frank on narrow end of dough triangle and roll up towards the wide end.

3. Slide one watermelon star onto the top of the skewer.

3. Arrange on ungreased baking sheet, point-side down.

Repeat for remaining franks and dough.

4. Chill until time to serve!

AMERICAN Hero Project

Traditionally,

at certain times each

year, we pause to acknowledge those who volunteer to serve our great nation at home and in faraway places. Statistically, North Carolina ranks third nationwide in terms of active and reserve military personnel. Men and women on deployment to Afghanistan represent one of the longest, all-volunteer military actions in recent history, some facing multiple deployments, and some returning with severe injuries that would have been fatal in years past. We call them heroes; but others call them Mom, Dad, Son, Daughter, Husband, or Wife.

The American Hero Project began as a grassroots concept by a group of volunteers from the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association (PMBA) about four years ago. The basic question was, “How can we show veterans that we really care?” Through the vision of those early volunteers (Bill Ammons, Mike Brown, Bill Martin, Lois Martin, Jim Oakley, and Eddie West), the idea of building a home for a wounded veteran evolved and it is now nearing completion.

With the assistance of 89 churches located in five counties (Davie, Forsyth, Rockingham, Stokes, and Surry), teams of volunteers, local business and foundational support, and interested individuals, the home is now under roof with the final touchup work in process. Bill Ammons, one of the original visionaries, has headed up the construction efforts and looks forward to the day the home is formally dedicated and turned over to its new homeowner.

“At the dedication, the resident will receive the keys to the home, a Bible, and an American flag to fly proudly from the front porch,” Bill stated.

During the construction of the home, a sign has been posted on the property, which reads, “Building a House for an American Hero.” Warren Steen, President of the Rye Foundation, shared that the Foundation is funding a playground for the new family to enjoy. He also mentioned in a recent newsletter that one incident stood out, illustrating the impact of the project on the community. A woman who had noticed the sign stopped by and made a contribution on the spot, stating, “My father served in the military, and I want to make a donation.”

Making the decision on who would be the new homeowner was no small undertaking. While the home was being built, a separate committee was tasked with reviewing the applications and conducting interviews. To qualify, an applicant must have been honorably discharged, wounded in action, and be in need of a home for their family. This “labor of love” tangibly illustrates what a dedicated group of volunteers can accomplish to honor an American hero.

Reflections from the Youngest Sibling

I’m

the youngest in my family. I have one sister who is about two-and-a-half years older. Growing up, my sister and I would spend time building dollhouses in the living room, playing restaurant in our little kitchen, and putting on shows for our family (by the time we were five and seven years old, we had the song “Sisters” from the movie White Christmas memorized). Through the years, I learned a lot from her, and still do. When it comes to being the youngest, you learn from your siblings, while making your own path. Below are my reflections as the youngest sibling.

1. You learn how to be a leader and a follower. Remember how I said we knew the words to “Sisters” at a young age? Well, we also knew the dance, and performed it at our yearly show in the living room. With these shows, I usually became the sidekick. From this experience, I learned how to work collaboratively with someone. I learned how to work with someone else’s ideas, and not only mine. Along with being a follower, as the youngest, I learned to be a leader. When I was younger, I made cards for my family. One day, I roped my sister into being my “assistant.” She helped me make cards for a grand total of 25 cents pay. This is just one of the many times I improved my leadership skills for the future.

2. You learn everyone has their own way of doing things at a time that works for them.

For youngest siblings everywhere, you have probably been told “You have to wait until you’re the same age as your sibling to get a….” This can be a cell phone, computer, etc.

However, normally, younger siblings don’t wait as long as their older sibling did to get that item and that’s okay. Things come to a person at the time it’s meant to happen.

3. You learn to be creative and funny. The youngest member of the family sometimes has to find their place in the family and not be overshadowed by older siblings. It can be hard to remember that one day you’ll have your first time driving when you see your sister taking the keys to the car and driving alone. One way we find our own place is by using humor. Research has shown that older siblings are more serious, while younger siblings are more relaxed and funny. One reason is because when the youngest is born, parents are calmer and more lenient.

Also, you learn to be creative, and I’m not talking about being creative with handme-down clothes. Creativity comes from forming your own style and personality and setting your own path in life.

4. You learn you’ll always have a friend in life. Call them your partners in crime, the ones you could blame the messy room on or the ones you can share your thoughts with—your older siblings will always be in your life. They were your first friends and will hopefully stay your friends throughout your life. You’ll create memories that only have a special meaning between your siblings and you.

Yes, you and your siblings will have fights and disagree, but the good times will outweigh the bad. Plus, you’ll always have someone to look over you and you will do the same for them.

5. You learn you may always be treated as the baby in the family, and that is not a bad thing. Sometimes it can be easier for the youngest, while other times it can be harder. However, there is one thing for sure, no matter how old you are, your family will always remember you as the baby and the last one to achieve certain milestones in life, such as walking, driving, and graduating from college.

Every child in the family has a special place and their own qualities and importance. As for being the youngest sibling, I can’t think of a better place to be and receive the lessons that go with it.

Kernersville is nestled in between Greensboro and Winston-Salem and is easily accessible from Interstate 40 and the newly named Salem Parkway (formerly known as Business 40). There are a lot of great things to do once you take any of the exit ramps to come and “Discover Yourville in Kernersville!”

Kernersville embraces celebrating Independence Day, so there will be plenty to do here in town on July 4th! For the little kids, there is a tradition we hold dear to our hearts here in Kernersville. Miss Mary’s Parade, sponsored by our local Kiwanis Chapter, is held the weekend before the fourth. On Saturday, July 1st, join a kids’ parade at Kernersville Town Hall. Registration begins at 9:30 am, and kids are encouraged to decorate their favorite bicycle, stroller, or wagon! On Tuesday, July 4th, there is a parade that goes through downtown Kernersville, sponsored by our local Rotary Chapter.

The parade begins at 9 am—it is a parade you don’t want to miss! Stay in town and head over to the local YMCA (1113 West Mountain Street) for a “Splash B4 the Blast” from 12 pm–2 pm. YMCA rates apply for pool entry, but there will be FREE hot dogs, while supplies last!

Then, starting at 6:30 pm, the Town of Kernersville and Kernersville Parks and Recreation will wrap up the fun-filled day.

Bring your lawn chair, blanket, family and friends to the Kernersville Raiders football field (512 W. Mountain Street) for a FREE fireworks celebration, complete with live music, starting at 6:30 pm! The sky will light up around 9 pm in a spectacular display of our nation’s independence!

This summer, Downtown Kernersville will have “Downtown Sidewalk Saturday” on the second Saturday of every month (July 8th, August 12th, September 9th and October 14th), where our merchants and restaurants offer special sales from 10 am to 2 pm. A

fresh bout of the “freshmen 15”—an expression that describes new college students’ weight gain during their first year—is threatening to claim its next class of unsuspecting targets. The birth of this virus can usually be attributed to the newfound responsibility of late teens choosing their own meals and having a more autonomous schedule. Those students who are aware of the hazards of early college life must take the following measures to avoid being victimized by this nationwide epidemic.

WORKING OUT: Set up a reasonable workout schedule as soon as you are settled into your college schedule. “Reasonable” is the operative word here. If you over-commit or push yourself too hard at first, you will burn out and end up not working out at all. An example of an acceptable workout schedule can include using the elliptical, treadmill, or stationary bike for half an hour, four times a week, directly followed by strength training for 20 minutes. You should not be trying to lose weight your freshman year. Your priorities should lie in maintaining your weight and adjusting to your new college responsibilities.

EATING AND LEISURE: A habit you should try to avoid is using leisure time to watch a show with a snack in hand. Creating this habit will make you believe that relaxing equals eating and sitting still.

Instead, go on a walk with music, hike with friends or head to the gym! It may seem odd to view running at the gym as “recharging.” After all, you are expending a lot of energy.

However, regular exercise actually increases your daily energy and bolsters your mood far more than staring at a bright light for 45 minutes. Entering college is a good time to discover inventive ways to unwind. Coloring books for grown-ups, reading outside, board games or foosball in the common rooms, art projects, visiting friends’ halls, and playing a little Frisbee or soccer on the lawns are all great options.

EATING OUT: If you are heading off campus to study with friends, suggest leaving directly after a meal; that way, you are not as tempted to stop for fast food. If you do end up eating out, eat fresh vegetables or smaller portions, supplemented with healthy snacks from your car. Also, picking tea at your coffee study hall over sugary coffee drinks is good for you and your wallet.

EATING IN THE CAFETERIA: MEALS SHOULD GO SOMETHING LIKE THIS: For breakfast, grab some fresh fruit and also take some extra to pack away for a snack later in the day. Whole-wheat toast with a little peanut butter for protein is also a great option.

For lunch, visit the salad bar before the hot line. Also, check out the soups.

For Dinner, inspect all your options before making your decision and don’t forget fresh vegetables. You should be wary of foods that do not clearly display all of their ingredients, like casseroles. Do not get into the habit of drinking soda at meals. Instead, bring a water bottle everywhere. Not only does drinking water keep you hydrated and prevent headaches in class, but it also keeps you feeling full and satisfies the need to munch on something. Finally, stay away from the dessert bars altogether; instead, keep a bar of dark chocolate in your room for an evening treat.

EATING IN YOUR ROOM OR HALL KITCHEN: These healthy foods may be helpful to have on hand in your hall kitchen or mini fridge: clementines or bananas for hurried breakfasts and almonds, dried fruit, and granola for snacks.

You may also feel the need to stock up on meal options for busier days. If so, collect salad ingredients, and choose instant rice packets over ramen or canned soup. If you do choose to buy soup, choose types with low sodium and vegetables, instead of meats and noodles. Pan-frying several strips of chicken and bell peppers, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, makes a great topping for salads throughout the week, and it keeps well in the fridge.

Many innocent students may feel that eating habits should be low on their list of priorities as college begins; however, food selections may seriously affect their ability to defend against the freshmen 15; a disease that can inhibit one’s focus and alter stable moods. It is vital to supply potential weightgainers with the nutrients that will make them feel healthy in the long run. If students take the time to develop nutritious habits early on, they may avoid the devastating epidemic, and save the time they would otherwise waste by creating new habits directed toward getting back into shape.

Early

morning on Monday, May 22nd, I was surrounded by love in the waiting room of Surgical Services at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. I had already been to nuclear medicine to get an injection of a fluid that would help the surgeon trace my lymph nodes. My husband Tim, daughter Briana and her husband Jonathan, daughter Morgan and her boyfriend Deep were doing their best to keep my nerves at bay. In walks my sweet pastor Jennifer Hampton with her big, beautiful smile. Standing in a circle, she had just started to pray when the nurse calls, “Robin Bralley!” Jennifer continues and finishes her prayer as the nurse calls again, “Robin Bralley?!” I hurriedly gave hugs to everyone and took the long walk back with Tim holding my hand the whole way. It seems like there were no less than ten doctors scurrying in and out as they prepped me and before I knew it, Tim was reassuring me with a goodbye kiss, and I was out!

Many thanks to family (Mom, George, Randy & Caroline) and friends (Sandy, Brian, Kristin & Susie) that came to support Tim and my girls during the long wait. And it was a long wait!

Apparently, I wanted to stay out because it was way into the night before my family was finally able to come see me and even then I could not wake up enough to talk

to them any length of time. They explained to my family that despite a shot of Narcan, I didn’t want to wake up. My blood pressure and oxygen were low, so I’d have to spend the night in ICU. Which in turn bought me an extra night in the hospital as well. I was originally told I’d only be there one night. The next morning I finally came to and was surprised at how well I felt. It was wonderful and amazing news to hear that no cancer was found in my lymph nodes and it appeared that the tumor was gone as well. Hallelujah, the chemo worked! Double bonus that they thought the cancer in my thyroid was contained in the thyroid so more good news! I can’t say enough about the wonderful care I received and the amazing outpouring of love and prayers I had covering me every step of the way.

Wednesday mid-afternoon I was finally released to go home, and recovery began. I’m not sure what I ever did to deserve the amazing family I have, but let’s just say I was spoiled rotten by my husband and daughters in the coming days. My house looked like a florist while wonderful family and friends covered us with flowers, food, and prayers. This is when it’s really handy to have a nurse for a daughter, as she was able to help me remove the gauze bandages a couple of days after going home. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to having a

small meltdown about my new appearance. Especially under my arm, where the lymph nodes were removed.

It’s a lot to take in at once, but I am slowly coming to accept it and know that it will look better with time and eventual reconstruction.

Until then, I was very touched by yet another stranger.

You see, Dianne Whisnant is a member of Central UMC in Shelby, NC, pastored by my previous pastor at Sunrise UMC, Danny Leonard. Dianne is involved with a ministry called Knitted Knockers. Knitted Knockers are special handmade breast prostheses that are comfortable and lightweight. It’s yet another option for mastectomy and lumpectomy patients. Dianne, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for thinking of me!

I continue to be overwhelmed by the kindness shown to my family and me and remain GrateFull and HopeFull!

The Top 5 Pieces of Equipment You Need to Complete a Workout at Home

though I teach group fitness classes at several locations around the Triad, my favorite place to work out is actually at HOME. To accomplish a wide variety of workouts, you need several pieces of equipment, and I’m helping identify my top five!

A YOGA OR EXERCISE MAT

Let’s start with what I think is the most important: a yoga mat. In order to keep a flat surface for your workout, a yoga mat is essential for our joints and helps with the impact of more intense workouts. For example, I only do burpees (a pushup and then jump to standing) if there is a mat for me to jump on. Additionally, the pressure you put on your wrists is minimized when you have a yoga mat between yourself and the hardwood (or concrete/crate, etc.) floor.

There is a wide variety of yoga mats that can be purchased all around the Triad, or online. You don’t have to go expensive! I use my yoga mat frequently, so I end up replacing it every six months because of the wear and tear. I buy cheaper mats because I like to change up the colors and patterns!

A SET OF FREE WEIGHTS

In all honesty, you can get countless workouts accomplished with just your body weight, but adding free weights produces even more fun! Start with a lighter set of dumbbells and a heavier set. If you are new to exercise, I recommend buying 5 pounds and 8 pounds, and then you can work your way up to heavier sets as you progress on your fitness journey.

RESISTANCE BANDS

Resistance bands are a great addition to any strength-training routine and come in a variety of sizes, lengths, and strengths. This portable exercise equipment is also easily stored, making it perfect for home use, hotel workouts, or when you’re tight on space at the gym. Start with a less intense level and then work your way up. Most kits come together, and you can purchase a set of three resistance bands in varying levels.

KETTLEBELLS

Kettlebells are my personal favorite piece of equipment to use in workouts. A kettlebell is a large, cast-iron, ball-shaped weight with a single handle.

I recommend buying a kettlebell that is heavier than your free weights, so you can use it for more power moves that require heavier resistance (such as kettlebell swings, deadlifts, and squats). If you’re brand new to working out, start with a 15-pound kettlebell and then work your way up from there.

EXERCISE BALL

Exercise balls come in all shapes and sizes. In order to help store your equipment and maximize space, I would recommend a smaller exercise ball. I utilize those smaller balls in almost all of my barre workouts, because they add an extra level of challenge, especially for the abdominal muscles.

For example, try doing a standard crunch with a small exercise ball underneath the top part of your back. It completely changes the range of motion and engages your entire core instead of just the top part of your abdominals.

Extra Credit: TRX WORKOUT SYSTEM

I’m going to be sharing an article next time all about the TRX workout system, although I cannot help but mention it. Originating with the Navy SEALS, TRX utilizes suspension training to develop balance, strength, and flexibility—all at once. Stay tuned for next month, because I’ll be sharing my favorite TRX workout.

Summer Berry Ice Cream Cake

With

summer in full swing, the heat is at an all-time high, the pool is more crowded than ever, and the air conditioning runs full blast 24/7. With the mercury rising, what better way to cool off than with a summer dessert that is sure to quench these scalding temperatures? This ice cream cake recipe is simple, yet impressive, with store-bought ingredients, and is completely customizable to fit your fancy. A layer of buttery pound cake, followed by layers of ice cream, jam, and fresh fruit make the perfect combination of flavors, all in one bite. Keep to my step-by-step directions or mix it up, letting your creativity and favorite flavors shine in this adaptable ice cream cake recipe!

Ingredients:

3 pints of high-quality ice cream (don’t skimp on the quality here! I went with Häagen-Dazs strawberry, vanilla bean, and butter pecan) ¼ cup jam, jelly or preserves 1 frozen pound cake (I recommend Sara Lee’s All Butter Pound Cake) 1 pint fresh berries

1. Spray one 10 x 5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray, and line with plastic wrap, leaving an overhang on all sides. Do your best to smooth plastic wrap out as much as possible to allow for a smoother outside finish. Spray plastic wrap with cooking spray.

6. Remove pan from freezer and top with pound cake layer, pressing lightly to make sure cake has adhered to ice cream layers. Cover top of pan and topmost cake layer with plastic wrap, and place back into the freezer to firm, at least 2 hours.

2. Remove one pint of ice cream (what will be your top layer) from the freezer and empty contents into mixing bowl. Let stand for a few minutes to soften, but not melt, and stir to loosen the consistency. Once ice cream is soft and smooth, spread into an even layer, being sure to fill corners of the pan. Place loaf pan into the freezer and allow ice cream to harden for at least 2 hours.

OTHER FUN COMBINATIONS TO CONSIDER:

3. Remove second pint of ice cream from the freezer, empty contents and allow to soften by stirring and then allowing to rest. Spread second flavor in an even layer on top of first layer and return to freezer to harden for 2 more hours.

4. Next, spread jam, jelly or preserves across the entire surface of ice cream and place back into freezer for 1 hour. Remove third pint of ice cream, allow to soften, stir and spread into an even layer on top of existing ice cream and jelly layers. Return to freezer and freeze until firm.

5. Remove pound cake from freezer and, using a sharp knife, divide cake into 3 even horizontal layers.

Remaining layers can be placed into the freezer for another use.

7. When ready to unmold the cake, wrap in a warm dish towel and allow to sit for a few minutes. Using a sharp knife, loosen all layers around the edges of the pan.

Invert onto a serving platter, removing all plastic wrap and trimming edges for a neater appearance. Top with desired berries and place in freezer until ready to serve.

Chocolate Mocha Raspberry – chocolate, vanilla and coffee ice cream filled with raspberry jam and topped with fresh raspberries Birthday Cake – vanilla chocolate chip, chocolate and butter pecan ice cream filled with chocolate syrup and topped with sprinkles and chopped nuts Peanut Butter and Jelly – peanut butter salted fudge and vanilla Swiss almond filled with grape jelly and topped with chopped peanuts
