New Year and welcome 2020!

Buckle up and hang on. With the impending election, I’m sure it will be a wild ride.

I have to say, I really detest the whole Democrat and Republican thing. I detest the mud-slinging and grouping folks into a certain category. I see good things on both sides and don’t 100% agree with either typically. Why can’t we just focus on the best person for the job? In the end, I think we have more in common than we think. I recently saw an interview with Michelle Obama and when asked about spending time with the former President Bush at various occasions, this was her response. “Our values are pretty much the same.

We may disagree on policy but we don’t disagree on humanity. We don’t disagree about love and compassion. I think that’s true for all of us. We get lost in our fears of what’s different.” I thought that was such a wonderful comment! I urge folks to look for the common ground and be respectful of differing views and opinions. After all, we are all humans first and foremost.

To say my December was a whirlwind would be quite the understatement! Our family enjoyed a fabulous trip to Disney World to celebrate Morgan’s graduation one weekend and the next we were in Greenville watching her walk across the stage. Then it was time to turn in the January issue to the printer with Christmas just a little over a week away! Whew! I’m ready for life to slow down just a bit! I may just hibernate for January!

When it comes to cabinets and islands, Kelly shared, “People really love the natural look. From reclaimed wood to lovely butcher block countertops—the warmth of wood is being embraced in 2020. We’ve also seen some textured cabinets that add a great deal of warmth and depth to a kitchen space.”

It’s also a great time to get a jump start on the 2020 trends. Kelly said, “2020 decorating trends are bringing some new and innovative items to the market. And at the heart of design, 2020 is all about luxury.

Current trends include more dramatic textures and surfaces coupled with interesting art and statement pieces.”

“Greige” which is a step beyond the traditional grey (which is always classic) and better than beige....

With tones of blue, purple, or even green, greige is a statement color.

Kelly continued, “The all-white kitchen has been popular for a while, and while it’s not going anywhere, we see more color in the kitchen. In what is being called the fifth wall—a growing trend is to give a dramatic pop color to the kitchen ceiling.”

Pretty pantries! People love pantry shelves, and when a homeowner is committed to organization, pretty canisters make a pantry a showpiece in the kitchen!

Copper is still a kitchen classic! Not only for pots and pans, but also for hoods and lighting!

BAT H R O O M T R E N D S “Walk-in showers continue to be popular this year,” said Kelly. “But the difference will be in the tiles. We see more pebble tiles, and frameless glass doors are an elegant choice.”

Plant lovers will be excited to hear that ‘biophilic design’ is a 2020 trend. “Utilizing plants in the bathrooms is becoming increasingly popular,” said Kelly. “And just as the natural look of wood is popular in kitchens, so is it growing in popularity in the bathroom.

From creating bathtubs that have a barrel look with wooden plants, to reclaimed wood, bathrooms are returning to ‘nature.’”

Finally, “We’re seeing that people are more creative in their bathroom spaces. While neutral colors still carry a lot of weight,” said Kelly, “Color and texture are becoming popular choices.”

DESIG N T R EN D S & H OME R EMODE L I N G And when it comes to interior design, Kelly shared that “Patterns, mosaics, and texture are growing in popularity. For a while, the neutral look dominated things, but people are looking for ways to infuse their own signature style into their homes. And that’s not always neutral!”

It’s also important to note, “The open floor plan isn’t going anywhere,” explained Kelly. “My husband and I have this conversation regularly when we’re discussing home renovations. People love the open floor concept, and it continues to be popular in 2020. For most situations, it’s a matter of opening up a wall and maybe adjusting a footprint. But open floor plans definitely add value to homes!”

Counting Down to Prom: The Ultimate Checklist

a reason we see film after film recreate the iconic prom scene in teen movies; there are few rites of passage as memorable. Counting down for your own iconic prom night? With so much to do before the big event, the process can sometimes feel a little overwhelming! Planning things out ahead of time can make your prom stress-free and effortless, allowing you to focus on the most important part—having a good time.

Here’s your all-inclusive list of everything you’ll need and when to follow through to help you have your best prom night ever!

3 MONTHS BEFORE

1 WEEK BEFORE

q Start pulling inspiration for your prom style of choice.

Going Old Hollywood? Glitz and Glam? Staying Classic or going trendy?

q Start pampering yourself a little early! Get lots of sleep, take care of your skin, and drink plenty of water!

q Note any dress-code rules for your school that need following before you start shopping for attire. q Confirm if you’ll be attending with a group of friends, a date or rocking it solo. q Start saving a little money for prom expenses by picking up odd jobs, like tutoring, dog walking or mowing lawns.

2 MONTHS BEFORE

q Coordinate your plans with friends; who’s meeting, at what time and where? q Schedule pre-prom photos with your parents, friends’ group and anyone else you want to include.

1 DAY BEFORE q Pack your bag for any after-prom overnight or weekend plans with friends.

q Purchase your Prom Tickets or make sure your date has got them covered.

q Create an emergency kit of anything you may need and will want with you (e.g., garment tape, bobby pins, Tylenol, cash, etc.)

q Shop for your Prom Dress, Suit or Tuxedo. Don’t forget to check out local formalwear shops like Hip Chics in Clemmons and Nitsa’s in Winston-Salem!

q Print out or save to your phone any inspirational images for your hair and beauty appointments.

q If your formalwear needs a little help in fitting, schedule an alterations appointment. q Start finding inspiration for Hair and Makeup online or in magazines. q Book plans for transportation and any after-prom activities with friends (limousine, party bus, hotel reservation, beach rental, etc.).

q Attend a nail appointment or do them yourself at home or with friends. q Get a good night’s sleep—you have some partying to do the next night!

THE BIG DAY q Make time to eat and drink. You need food for energy and you want to stay hydrated!

1 MONTH BEFORE

q Be sure to charge your phone and camera.

q Book your hair, nail and/or makeup appointments, if needed.

q Attend hair and makeup appointments earlier in the day.

q Purchase or borrow any accessories or jewelry for the big night.

q Get ready an hour or so before you are supposed to be ready, to make sure you have everything you need and can avoid rushing.

q Finalize all alterations for your attire.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

q Photos! A selfie or two are great, but have someone get some shots of you and your fellow prom goers that will last a lifetime.

q Start breaking in new dress shoes you’ll be wearing, to make sure you’re ready for the dance floor

PROM NIGHT

q Order your date’s corsage or boutonniere from your local florist, like George K. Walker Florist in Winston-Salem.

q Remember—safety first! Look out for yourself and your friends.

q Make dinner reservations, if you’re planning on a preprom bite out.

q Have a blast! Don’t stress and have fun. Remember, this is your special night!

“I Couldn’t Hit the Right Keys.”

July 3rd, 2017, Kernersville resident, Margaret Taylor, had just finished her relaxing vacation and was back at work at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem.

“It was a normal day,” remembered Margaret. “I had lunch and then around 2 p.m., it suddenly felt like a brick was pulling my left hand down. I couldn’t hit the right keys on my computer.”

When she stood up, her balance was off, but she managed to make it to the bathroom. “I checked my face in the mirror, but I didn’t see any signs that part of my face was drooping,” she recalled.

She made it back to her desk and tried to do more typing. When she still kept hitting the wrong keys, she called her supervisor, Teresa Creson, to tell her that something was not right.

“Beyond the fact that I didn’t usually call, she could hear something in my voice,” Margaret said. Teresa came into Margaret’s office with two nurses and a blood pressure cuff. Margaret’s balance was still off and then she got sick and threw up.

“They didn’t mess around. They loaded me into a wheelchair and started pushing me through hallways that I didn’t even know existed,” shared Margaret. “A whole team of nurses was there helping me and one of them had a stopwatch in her hand the entire time.

My supervisor got me all checked in as

others took me to get a CAT scan. It was confirmed that I was having a stroke.”

Margaret was given the tPA shot, an injection that can break up clots which are causing ischemic strokes. This shot can be given to stroke patients having the right type of stroke. However, when a stroke occurs, every minute matters.

Being seen at a comprehensive stroke center and receiving the tPA shot in time can be the difference between living with permanent disability and returning to a previous quality of life.

After ICU, Margaret spent two weeks in the Novant Health Stroke Center with occupational and physical therapy, helping her regain the use of her left arm and left leg.

“Wanting to get back to work really kept me going and kept pushing me to get stronger,” Margaret shared. She was able to come back to work in 3 months.

She says she has a new appreciation of what stroke victims and their families go through. “It’s easy to take those little things for granted, like picking up a paper clip or a coin with my left hand or relearning how to type with those fingers,” said Margaret. “Being able to drive again was one of my goals. One day, I hope to be able to get back into my high heels!”

“Even after two years, I still have to work at it every day. I still work on some balance issues. Physical activity helps.

I really feel like going back to work after my stroke has made me continue to get better and get stronger. Each day I push to regain my quality of life,” shared Margaret.

When she retires in the next few years, Margaret plans to volunteer at the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center to help other families. “It was always so good when my volunteer, Dan, came in every few days and encouraged me.

Knowing he had been through the same thing really helped,” recalled Margaret.

“After I retire, I want to help other stroke survivors fight and not give up.”

Women need to know that stroke is a major health threat. In fact, nearly 60% of stroke deaths are in women. Each year, about 55,000 more females than males have a stroke, and women have a higher lifetime risk of stroke than men.

Spotlight on an Alumna & Teacher

Grace Bartelt is the new Middle School Spanish teacher at Redeemer School this year, but she and her family are no strangers around here. She and her three older brothers actually attended Redeemer School in elementary school, and her parents were among the original board members. After 5th grade, Sra. Bartelt attended Ellis Middle School, then Davie County High School. She went on to attend and graduate from Covenant College, and after that worked in ministry for ten months in El Paso, TX. When she returned to Winston-Salem in 2019, we were excited to have her return to Redeemer School this year, now as a member of our faculty!

On learning Spanish and becoming bilingual:

On growing up in a big family: Growing up with three big brothers meant I developed a habit of eating quickly, so I could make sure I would get seconds. I actually had to learn that it is okay to slow down when I eat. As for fighting, I will say that we all started really getting along when I went to college. So there’s definitely hope for all of you who cannot stand your siblings right now.

On her time as a student at Redeemer School: I loved everything about this school. I had great friends here. I remember loving my teachers. I loved doing nature studies and still enjoy seeing how purposeful God is in every part of creation. I loved that my parents were so involved and it was always really fun when they were at school to teach E-days or volunteer. I ended up going to a public middle school and I didn’t hate it at all. It was like Redeemer taught me how to just accept myself and others.

On leaving Redeemer and going to public school: I think I was weird. Well, by weird, I guess I mean quiet and different. But I always had a lot of confidence, and I didn’t worry about what other people thought of me. I mean, I am who I am. Also, I was always nice to everyone. That was something that just made sense to me. So I really never felt like I didn’t belong or was left out or any of the other things that seem so common for middle schoolers today. I wish kids would know that actually everyone is a little bit weird, so the sooner you can embrace that about yourself, the better.

When I was about eight years old, I started taking an annual mission trip to Mexico with my church. We were building a school for the deaf. I was actually more interested in sign language than I was in Spanish at the time, but I was sort of learning both. Then, in college, I met a boy who was home-schooled and had taught himself to be bilingual. I thought, “I can do that if I just work hard enough.” So I did. I spent a semester in Spain, did a two-month Spanish immersion program at Middlebury College in Vermont, and graduated with a minor in Spanish.

I love the clever things my students say in class. They can make me truly laugh with their out-of-left-field humor or just plain clever jokes. I love hearing their accents, whether it be hearing them find their beautiful Spanish roll in their r’s, or the horrendous (intentional) American Southern accents while speaking Spanish. Having a student who is a native and fluent speaker in my 6thgrade class has kept me on my toes, since he’s alert to catch any mistakes I happen to make in class…. I always tell my classes that mistakes are learning opportunities and not to be ashamed of them, so it’s good practice to be called out by one of my own students. He is so polite when doing so; it’s honestly like having a personal dictionary and grammar coach!

When she’s not in her classroom, you can find Sra. Bartelt hanging out with high school students as a Davie County Young Life leader. From overcoming struggles with dyslexia in early life, to playing college soccer, to teaching herself and now teaching others another language, Señora Grace Bartelt is a fantastic example of someone actively using the gifts God gave her and blessing others with them. June

of 2018 was a bitter-sweet time for our family. Our youngest daughter, Brooke, graduated from Our Lady of Mercy (OLM) Catholic School during the annual graduation ceremony. Each student received accolades, and tears flowed as each one received his or her diploma. While we were thrilled by Brooke’s accomplishments and looked forward to her high school years, we knew that we were about to “move away” from our Mercy family that we had been with since 2006, when our daughter Mia started Pre-K. At the time of Brooke’s graduation, it just seemed like we were embarking on the next phase in life, thankful for our time at Mercy. Now, over a year later, our entire family can truly appreciate what the Mercy Experience has done for our children and the lasting imprint the experience has left on our children’s lives.

“I miss Mercy” is a common refrain from our children. Why? Because they now appreciate what a safe and firstrate learning experience they enjoyed.

From Pre-K through 8th grade, our girls were loved, nurtured, and encouraged to grow by the entire Mercy staff. Each staff member and teacher knows every student’s name—nobody is a stranger. As

a Mercy family, we developed long-lasting friendships with other families that share our values: the Catholic values of love, faith, and kindness to others. While the school practices the Catholic faith through daily prayer and religious study, students of all faiths are welcome at OLM, without the pressure to adopt the religion. The expectation for all students is a respect for every individual that transcends a specific religion. Respect for others is a value that is missing in our society and in many young students today.

While the OLM environment is ideal for learning, with small class sizes, a diverse student body and attention to the needs of each individual student, the educational development fostered in the Mercy student is nothing less than excellent. Let me explain how I know this.

The goal for each student as they step out of Mercy that last day of 8th grade is to be prepared for high school. Mercy did that far better than I could have ever expected.

During the first week at the public high school, both daughters had virtually every teacher call them to the side after a “Wow” moment in the classroom and were asked, “Where did you attend middle school?” It was obvious to those high school teachers that these “Mercy students” were, on

whole, better prepared for high school, as evidenced by their knowledge of the material, their ability to participate in the classroom discussion and articulate their ideas clearly, and most certainly, through their ability to write.

While OLM is academically challenging for the students, and dedication from the parents is necessary to support the students, the experience was worth every penny. The education at Mercy will serve our daughters for the rest of their lives.

Mercy students emerge not only as good students, but as good people. You can’t put a dollar value on that.

Know that your student may be challenged academically, maybe to the point of frustration, but part of the learning experience is that of perseverance and doing it right—not just doing enough to skate by. 3. Deep clean your home before it goes on the market—from the cobwebs in the corners to the baseboards, to the light fixtures! (Contact Tim or Jenny for a recommendation if this task seems overwhelming!)

4. Lock up or remove any firearms or other weapons; secure nice jewelry out of sight.

5. Remove the clutter, especially in the closets and cabinets.

Closets should be only two-thirds full, with nothing on the floor.

PLANNING THE PERFECT AGE-APPROPRIATE BIRTHDAY

For

many, planning the perfect birthday party for a young child can be an incredibly daunting task. First, there is the barrage of other items to get through—creating an invitation list, buying necessary supplies, planning activities, etc. The list simply goes on and on. Then one needs to decide whether the activities for the party are age-appropriate or too advanced. The activities that one has at a one-year-old’s party will not work for a three or five-year-old’s soiree. All in all, party-planning can be one tricky situation to muddle through.

Considering that life does not slow down for planning, what is a busy parent to do? First off, do not think of planning as something to dread. Just like a road trip, half of the fun is the process of getting there! Deciding on the theme, decorations, and activities makes the days leading up to the event seem like part of the celebration itself.

Secondly, keep in mind that children’s birthday parties do not need to be extravagant—kids will be pleased with a simple gathering. However, even a simple party requires planning, especially when it comes to what activities and themes the age-appropriate party should have. The sooner you start organizing, the earlier the excitement can begin! What are a few tips for planning the perfect age-appropriate children’s party? Read on for ideas for what events and themes work for ages 1-5!

One-year-old’s Party Ideas: Truth be told, a baby’s first birthday is incredibly stressful for all involved. It is a monumental day— you are literally celebrating a baby’s year on this planet! How can one craft a fun, yet appropriate event?

First off, simplicity should be a key. Rather than pay unnecessary money for a big production event, why not focus on having

a catchy theme instead? Some to try include: “Fun to be One,” “One in a Melon” (watermelon theme), “Mr. or Miss. Oneder-ful,” “Winter One-derland,” and “Look Whoo’s One” (owl theme).

Regarding décor, food, and activities—try to focus on one element of the theme to inspire you! For example, if you are trying the “One in a Melon,” theme, have fun with watermelon plates, hats, utensils, etc. Since this is a melon theme, this event would be ideal in the summer, whereas “Winter Onederland” would be a perfect theme for a winter birthday!

Two-year-old’s Party Ideas: This is another exciting birthday to celebrate.

Again, have fun with catchy themes. A few to consider are: “Baby Shark, Two, Two, Two…,” “Chugga, Chugga, Two, Two” (train themed), “Two Wild” (jungle themed), and “A Two-Two Party” (tutu/ballet inspired theme).

Regarding décor, food, and activities, a two-year-old’s birthday can include more games than a one-year-olds’. Consider the following ones for a fun celebration: sidewalk chalk games, splash pads (can be done in a kiddie pool with pool toys), bubble station, coloring center, etc. Again, since the littles are more mobile, more activities and events can be planned for this party!

Three-year-old’s Party Ideas: This is a different type of birthday, in that by now your little one has developed his or her own hobbies and interests. Rather than come up with a catchy theme for this one, why not consider something your little is already interested in?

Have a toddler boy—or girl—who loves dinosaurs? Try a having a Dino-themed soiree! Have a toddler who enjoys helping you cook? Have a chef-inspired gathering. Once you decide on your

theme, your creative juices will begin to flow regarding food, décor, and in other ways. For example, if crafting a cookinginspired event, have fun with it, and have your entire family dress as chefs! Include cooking a small—and easy—dish with your littles, like cookies! Just don’t forget to let them mix the dough and decorate for themselves!

Four-year-old’s Party Ideas: By this age, your baby is now almost a kindergartner!

It is time to kick up the event a notch. As with the year before, let your child’s natural interests help you determine the theme.

This year, however, try and include a few more appropriate games and activities for the littles. Gone are the days where a bottle of bubbles will entertain the party for hours. Time to get creative!

A few activities to try for a four-year-old’s party include: a cupcake walk (like a cakewalk, just with cupcakes), decorating (and cooking) your own pizza, painting a T-shirt, and of course a piñata. This is also the prime age to begin fun and tiring activity centers, like renting a bounce house or hosting a jump center on a trampoline!

Five-year-old’s Party Ideas: Like a oneyear-old’s birthday party, this is another big event for parents and little ones. This is the birthday that usually correlates with the little one starting schooling, which is a huge step for all involved.

For this party, consider trying your event off-site. Here the activities can greatly broaden. For example, if you have a type who enjoys swimming, consider having your event at local pool! Have a five-yearold who cannot get enough of their hobby, like karate or dance? Try having your event either at this location or having a themed birthday of this hobby. Again, here your ability to be creative is endless.

Tyler Beyea, Development Director of “H.O.P.E of WinstonSalem,” had a wonderful experience when she hosted their “Be a Kid, Feed a Kid” fundraising event at Kaleideum Downtown. “HOPE of W-S was looking for a space to help build awareness of our mission [to serve healthy meals weekly to children in food deserts of W-S], by creating an experiential event for attendees and make them feel like a kid again. Kaleideum Downtown was a perfect fit for our needs, with enough space and exhibits, so the process of entertaining was really turnkey. Kaleideum gave us the freedom to bring in what we wanted to make it an exclusive event, with gourmet WS restaurants, breweries, farmers’ markets, screen printing demos, a band and a DJ, raffles and more. Compared to other venues and the amount of additional event prep, what we would have had to do would have been beyond our grassroots budgets.

With the amount of assistance, amenities and help with set-up and break-down, and the amazing (and patient) people we worked with along the way, we were more than

thrilled with the turnout of the event, as were the guests.

We have already signed on for next year, and this will look like an annual event for HOPE, as the word of mouth afterward was worth every penny. Thanks to Kaleideum for the perfect space and place to give an event something different and more memorable than the standard sitdown dinner.”

One of the best parts of hosting an event at Kaleideum is watching your guests enjoy the nostalgia it provides. If you have grown up in this community, you have spent time at Kaleideum museums. Hosting an event there allows adults to find the child inside and have a unique experience.

Kaleideum North has some truly unique spaces available for your next event. For an event up to 1000 guests, you can rent the entire museum, and the 1st floor can host 500. There is a variety of more intimate spaces that are available to rent individually. The largest of these is the

Exhibit Hall, which can host 270. “Foodworks” can host 120, and the Auditorium can host 130. The Auditorium would also be the perfect place for a church on Sunday mornings. The Lecture Hall and picnic areas can host 75. Kaleideum North also has an amazing outdoor space that could be transformed into a beautiful wedding or large event venue. The Planetarium, which can host 119, can be used as an event space, as well as being incorporated into a larger event by providing the planetarium show as entertainment. They also have the three Learning Labs/ Birthday Party rooms that can host up to 30.

At Kaleideum Downtown, you can host up to 600 by renting the whole museum, and the first floor will host 300. Their “Under the Stars” room is perfect for up to 120 guests and the birthday party rooms can host 30-50. There is also a variety of spaces that can be used and redesigned to create something special.

We do have some packages available, but we are also able to customize a package that will fit the needs of each event.

Pick a Location There are numerous locations to help you create a magical celebration and some of the best parties can be hosted in the comfort of your own home. Local recreation centers and parks usually have space available to rent at a reasonable rate that may include picnic areas and use of playground equipment. An alternative is to transform your backyard into a safe and serene play zone with fun and games. If your neighborhood has a clubhouse, that can be another great option.

Pick a Theme Get your child’s input and make sure they stay involved in the planning process. This not only makes for the best outcome, but helps them feel that their special day really is all about them. You want to give your child a great party that they will enjoy with their friends, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

You also want to find a unique place with fun activities for the kids to do that will be different from what you have done before. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to make it all work. Luckily, here in Winston-Salem, the perfect place to have a birthday party already exists. Hoots and Hollers Make & Take Art Shop can provide a unique creative experience to make your child’s birthday party one of a kind.

Millie Barnhart and Lee Anne Edwards started Hoots and Hollers in 2016. Millie had previously worked out of her home art studio doing art camps and classes.

She met Lee Anne when she designed the beer garden for a local restaurant owned by Lee Anne and her husband.

They began to collaborate on “make and take” art classes on the restaurant patio.

They were very successful. This lead them to open Hoots and Hollers, and they moved into their current space in May 2017.

Birthday Parties at Hoots and Hollers are for any artist at heart, starting at age two. Millie and Lee Anne will work with you to customize your party to fit your child’s unique interests. They will design a themed art project for the party that each

child can additionally customize and take home with them. They allow over an hour for the art project portion of the party and then help to transform the space for anything from snacks and cupcakes to a fully catered meal.

The space can hold 25 artists, and additionally any parents that come along.

There is a $150 non-refundable deposit to hold the date and time. Parties are priced per artist, starting at $20 and the deposit is deducted from the balance, which is due two days prior to the party.

The project possibilities are endless.

Some ideas include wind chimes, painting on canvas, fairy gardens, and faux stained glass.

Local parent Sarah McCalla thoroughly enjoyed the experience she had hosting a party at Hoots and Hollers. She said, “From the moment we connected with Millie about the possibility of hosting our middle son’s fourth birthday party at Hoots and Hollers, she was friendly, flexible, and communicative. She spoke directly to my son whenever she could and allowed him time to consider his options before answering. We decided to have the party immediately after preschool one afternoon, and when we arrived, my son was so pleased to see his name written on the sandwich board outside the store.

She was so accommodating, allowing us to bring lunch in addition to the cake. As a true mom does, she set up lunch and

helped serve the kids, as if she had eight arms. After the kids ate (and ooohed and ahhed at her lovely studio space), she quickly transitioned them to a superhero shield project. The kids decorated their shields with bottle caps, buttons, stickers, sequins, and glitter, glitter, glitter...and I didn’t have to clean up any of it! What an excellent party favor to leave with: instead of a plastic bag filled with sugar and tiny toys, an art project of their own creation to share with their families. My son continues to ask to go back to Hoots and Hollers any time he’s able to snag one-on-one time with me, and I’m happy to oblige.”

Hoots and Hollers is full-service make and take art shop. They host a variety of classes and events. You can also plan more than birthday parties in their space. Knowing that gift-giving is really a personal message of thanks and love, how can we create gifts that reflect that meaningful message? Not everyone is a craft wizard or has time to create complicated crafted gifts. But that doesn’t mean personal, meaningful gifts can’t be presented with sincerity. Here are some suggestions for special gifts that say, “Thanks for being you!”

GIFTS OF TIME AND ATTENTION – create gift certificates with special meaning for your loved ones. These can include such things as “One 15-minute foot rub,” or “One Breakfast in Bed on Your Choice of Saturdays,” or even “Five Creative, Delicious Bag Lunches with All Your Favorite Foods!” Creating personal gift certificates is a great way for children to honor their parents and grandparents, brothers, and sisters without spending any money! Nine Ways FCDS is Innovating in Elementary School

Country Day School is well known for preparing students for what’s ahead, but what does that look like when it comes to younger children? Below are just a few of the ways in which FCDS is engaging curious learners each day.

1.

SCIENCE EVERY DAY.

At FCDS, we believe that science is just as important as reading, writing, and, well, arithmetic.

Lower School students have two dedicated science specialists, Jacqui Chance and Danny Lough, who are trained scientists and make learning their subject fun.

“Lower School science is all about sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm and getting them to ask questions about the world around them,” Mrs. Chance says.

Mr. Lough agrees. “It’s all about hands-on learning. We do experiments. We learn scientific concepts, but it’s fun.”

DAILY CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH.

In the FCDS Lower School, students are always talking in class—and that’s a good thing. Conversational Spanish, which is taught daily to students in kindergarten through third grade and twice a week to preschoolers, is centered on having relatable conversations. “We teach in a natural way,” says Maria Teresa Ortiz-Thompson, who created the Lower School world language curriculum. “We don’t focus on the parts of speech. If you speak to one another and tell stories, you access the vocabulary through the story, and you retain it better. Grammar and vocabulary come instinctively.”

Learning a world language also generates a respect and appreciation for people’s similarities and differences. “Part of language learning is the culture,” Señora Ortiz-Thompson says. “We learn and respect that there are different people with different languages and different ways of doing things. That opens up a lot of curiosity about the world for these children.”

WE STILL TEACH HANDWRITING.

Most schools have dropped handwriting from their curriculum, but not Forsyth. Why? Research shows that learning to write in cursive is actually good for your brain. “Current research suggests that cursive handwriting instruction contributes to reading and writing skill acquisition,” says Darcie TeVault, the Assistant Upper School Director for Teaching & Learning. “Specifically, cursive instruction contributes to the development of spelling and sentence composition for typically developing writers and writers with diagnosed learning disabilities.” In addition, writing in cursive addresses fine motor skill development and supports executive function skills, such as sequencing and focus.

UR LOWER SCHOOL CLASSROOM TEACHERS O ARE THE OG TEACHERS. (Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator-Trained, that is).

At FCDS, Lower School teachers are trained in the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Language Approach to teaching, which helps them meet the needs of elementary school students as they learn English language structure and phonological awareness, says Ashley Clark, Director of the Johnson Academic Center at the school. “This training is specifically designed to address the needs of elementary school students who exhibit reading and learning delays, but it benefits all students as they are developing skills in reading and writing.” This specialized instruction also allows teachers to better differentiate instruction, so that all learners can, well, learn.

OUR FULLY STAFFED HEALTH ROOM HAS A FULL AND PART-TIME NURSE.

During each school day, our health room is ready for your child’s skinned knees, runny noses, and loose teeth. Nancy Hart, our full-time nurse, builds strong relationships with all of our students and gets to know them and their health conditions.

This veteran healthcare provider is able to assess and treat what needs treating in her office (or call you, if your child needs to come home or see a doctor). Sure, it’s no fun to be sick, but a visit to Nurse Nancy is almost worth it.

WE’RE FLEXIBLE ABOUT SEATING.

When you walk into some elementary school classrooms at Forsyth Country Day, you might be surprised to learn that students don’t have assigned seats—they don’t even have to sit in chairs! First grade teacher Happy Bell-Wiatrek, whose room looks more like a coffee shop, with tables of different heights and seating options that include cushions, padded milk crates, exercise balls, and rocking Hokki stools, believes strongly in the benefits of flexible seating. “It allows students to be their best learning selves,” she says.

“Having choice not only empowers students to be active learners, but allows them to think for themselves.”

In Mrs. Bell-Wiatrek’s class, students decide where to sit and what to sit on each day, and they move throughout the day when subjects change.

One student who enjoys bouncing on an exercise ball during math may prefer to sit on a cushion during reading, and that’s okay. “When no one is telling them where to sit and remain for the entire day, and students have a choice, they take more responsibility for their own learning,” Mrs. BellWiatrek says.

WE HAVE A SPECIALIST FOR THAT—ON SITE.

Forsyth Country Day features a team of teachers who help kids learn their best. These range from language development specialists who work with children with diagnosed learning disabilities to speech-language pathologists and academic coaches. Children can work with their special teachers during the school day—and homework is coordinated between the classroom teacher and the specialist to be just right for the child’s needs.

SMALL CLASS SIZES ALLOW TEACHERS TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS AND PARENTS.

When adults work together for the benefit of children—the children benefit! Forsyth’s small class sizes allow teachers and parents to form meaningful relationships with students and tune in quickly to how their children are performing and feeling.

Parents or teachers communicate frequently and often share information about what’s going on in a child’s classroom life or external life, thus building community and fostering strong relationships.

New Year’s Resolutions for the Whole Family

A

new year and a new decade are officially here! While many of us adults have made resolutions and promises for taking better care of ourselves, slowing down, visiting family more, or paying off debts, the concept of resolutions is often lost on children. As adults, we know resolutions are well-intended mantras to “do better and be better” in the new year, but we often make the goals unattainable, so that we ultimately end up failing somewhere before spring hits—not quite the example we want to set for our kids, is it?

In 2020, try taking a more household approach to resolutions this year. Keep resolutions or goals attainable and to things that can be easily implemented; you’re your own daily/weekly schedule.

Consider participating in the following kid-friendly, easily attainable, resolutions as a household.

“We will wake up five minutes earlier during the week.”

Most parents can agree that the morning is often a mad dash to get out the door. It is usually a time of stress, rushing to get everyone’s shoes on, hair/teeth brushed, homework into the backpacks, lunches together, etc. This often leads to stress, shortened tempers, and not exactly the greatest start to the day. Try setting alarms 5 minutes earlier. While it does not seem like an amount of time that would make a difference, it is an easily attainable goal that, over time, can really relive morning stress.

“We will pick two screen-less meal times a week.”

The hustle and bustle of modern family life is real. Many of us would hate to admit how often we eat a meal with one hand and scroll our phone/tablet with the other.

More of us would probably like to omit the number of times we’ve handed over our phones or devices to our kids, just so we can get through a meal with some level of quiet. So start small and start attainable, choose two times a week that phones or devices are absolutely not allowed at the meal table (that means not for adults, either). Build the tradition that meals are for talking to one another about the events of the day, learning about each other, and having meaningful conversations.

With time, this may become more of the norm than the screen time.

“We will take a family walk for 30 minutes, two times a week.”

Staying healthy and integrating exercise is an important element to a balanced lifestyle. In the hectic nature of many of our schedules, it can often become difficult to stay on track. As a family, choose two days a week when you can carve out time to simply take a walk around your neighborhood, a park, a local track, or anywhere creative you can think of. These two days a week do not have to be set in stone and can be flexible week to week, but make it a priority and change up the location to keep it fun!

“We will end the day on a positive note.”

In an effort to end every day on a positive note, make a new nightly tradition before everyone goes to bed to share one positive part of your day. It could be your child’s favorite event at school; it could be a compliment they were given, it could be something funny you saw/heard during the day or something that made you feel good. Share it with one another before you head to bed. It is so easy to find the stressful and the negative in the world, make a conscious effort to have your family focus on the good in the world—no matter how small.

The above are easy resolutions to start as a whole family or household, but you can always consider other small and attainable goals you can implement for your family. Remember, the key is to keep them easy-to-meet. Finding success in these types of resolutions will help teach children goal-setting, both long-term and shortterm, and will give them an opportunity for success in their resolutions.

12 Months of Unknown Holiday Fun

all know about the major holidays within the year, such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans’ Day, and Easter. Then, there are the smaller days, including Presidents’ Day, Labor Day, and New Year’s. However, the list of holidays doesn’t end there. In fact, each day of the year has its own “holiday,” as well as weekly and monthly celebrations. For example, January is “Adopt a Rescue Bird Month” (I bet you didn’t know that!). One of my favorite ways to welcome my students to class each morning is by including a little fact about the daily holiday on the morning PowerPoint. As I complete research for these, I learn more about the celebratory days throughout the year and at least half, I did not know about.

One Minute till Midnight!

BY LISA S.T. DOSS for the New Year? It seems to be the only question mentioned these days alongside two questions. “Are you going out to celebrate and whom will you be kissing at midnight?”

Have you ever wondered about the origin of our favorite traditions, from watching the “ball” drop, to singing, kissing, and toasting with champagne? The facts may surprise you!

Times Square Ball Drop For seafaring captains in the late 1820s, one form of a clock was a time ball. The sizeable ball was positioned on the harbor to help a ship’s crew discern the time as it dropped. Due to the glitches, the balls frequently malfunctioned until the arrival of the telegraph. In 1907, The Times Tower in ew ork welcomed the first “ball-drop” of a 00-pound wooden and iron ball descending a flagpole. A tradition lasting 112 years.

The Midnight Kiss Renaissance men and women celebrated the arrival of New Year’s by untying their masquerade masks at midnight and kissing to ward away the year’s evils. In Germany or England, a kiss strengthened a romance or indicated a year of abundant love. If you fear the eve of anuary first will begin without a partner, the best suggestion is to go to Scotland and celebrate Hogmanay.

It’s a tradition to connect with friends and strangers and kiss everyone.

Auld Lang Syne What does it mean? It may surprise you that the phrasing “Auld Lang Syne,” began as a Scottish poem. Several Scottish poets dating back to the 1500s referenced the phrase, “Auld Lang Syne,” which

translates as “old long since” or “times gone by.” Even though Robert Burns is the recognized author of the song, the honor goes to another man. In 1788, Robert Burns used the melody of a Scottish folk song to create a song. Burns sent a copy to the Scots Musical Museum along with a note that stated, “The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man.”

This year, try singing Burns rendition: And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup! And surely, I’ll be mine!

Creating Resolutions The Romans believed making resolutions and offering them before the New Year was a holy rite, stemming from mythology. The god of beginnings and transitions, Janus, had two faces; one looking toward the future while the other stared into the past.

According to the belief, the beginning of the year required its citizens to make pledges and offer gifts to receive an omen for prosperous days ahead.

By the year 0, faith-bound Christians arrived to midnight mass to reflect and atone for past sins The Sun’s Influence Referencing a calendar to count the days until the transition from December

31st to January 1st appears simple. The Gregorian calendar is now a sound system. Appreciation for the first calendar goes to Julius Caesar, who challenged astronomers and mathematicians to create a measurement for the seasons.

Two challenges. Romans believed even numbers were unlucky; therefore, the months, with one exception, ended in either 29 or 31 days. This was known as the Julian calendar, but it was not truly accurate. The solution, called the Gregorian calendar, was to alter one year 2 to a -day year and include a leap year every four years. As for the New Year, Caesar had instituted the first day in anus to honor the Roman god of beginnings.

Symbolic Food In wanting to follow traditions to the letter, revelers consumed only those foods which “bestowed fortune.” Colors and shapes were relevant in this connection. For instance, legumes tend to resemble coins and greens bills, and they are interpreted as a means of gaining future financial success. Ring-shaped cakes define the conclusion of a year and readiness to begin anew.

Pop the cork!

By the 1800s, the European settlers remained awake to hear the church bells, and shots of gunfire to welcome the ew Year sounded till the early morning. In some towns, families visited houses to receive a snack and drink. Champagne arrived with a bottle of French wine that had been fermented before the bottling process. A period of 0 years refined the taste and it became the traditional choice of celebratory events! Cheers!

More Than Just Plants, they’re Remedies

January, the time of year when fuzzy slippers, warm clothing, and hot teas define comfort.

Perhaps blanketed by snow, the landscape allows the mind to consider the hustle and bustle of the upcoming months. The arrival of the first buds prompts us to take steps to begin the planting season. While the focus at other times of the year is on colorful, vibrant flowers, take the enjoyment factor one step further in winter and consider the medicinal purpose of plants. For thousands of years, men and women have gathered wildflowers, berries, leaves, and bark to make teas and infusions, topicals, syrups, and oils.

Despite the steps needed from start to finish, the work can become a therapeutic routine. And the result is wellness.

START FROM SEED: Why wait? All seeds need is natural sunlight and daily water to begin the germination process. Start simple.

What aromas do you love the most—chamomile, peppermint, or perhaps, basil? Google the phrase, “rare seeds,” and you will discover a small company that will mail healthy, difficult-toobtain seeds.

A FEW SUGGESTIONS: • Be patient during the process from seed to full plants. Some, such as peppermint and lavender, take a lengthy period to transition from a seedling to a plant.

In the winter months, grow-lights and warming mats are a viable and inexpensive means to invest in gardening.

• Start small. Begin with one type of seeds and add as you feel comfortable. Don’t forget to label your containers!

LEARNING ABOUT THE BENEFITS: The study of herbology is fascinating! Did you know that yarrow, the tall wildflower with clusters of flowers, can stop a cut from bleeding while promoting healing? And, while you may enjoy drinking chamomile tea, it also calms the body while boosting the immune system, encouraging wellness. A favorite flower may be the coneflower, also known as echinacea.

The leaves and flowers prevent colds, flu, infections, and heal wounds. By expanding our knowledge of various herbs, we can begin to take a new approach to self-healing beyond seeking just flavor. For instance, basil is an excellent source of vitamins. Thyme is ideal for sickness, since it has antimicrobial,

antibacterial, and antiviral properties. And, oregano can also fight off viruses and bacteria.

CREATING MEDICINAL SOLUTIONS: Once you have your flowers and leaves in bottles, you can begin to make a viable remedy. If you love flavored water, whether hot or iced, you already have an interest in taking the next step.

INFUSION: The process involves pouring boiling water over a tea material, bulk or teabag, and allowing the two to dissolve. In the summer, berries or cucumber-infused ice water makes a delicious drink.

A RECIPE FOR COUGHS AND COLDS: Fill two ounces of a four-ounce Mason jar with fresh thyme or lemon thyme; then pour in four ounces of raw, unfiltered honey. Stir to remove the air bubbles. Screw on the lid and place by a sunny window. After two weeks, strain the thyme and tuck away for future use.

If the need is now, place the jar into a double boiler and heat at 180 degrees for 15 minutes. Take by the spoonful, add to tea. This recipe is ideal for kids!

AN AROMATIC: In place of essential oils, use the actual leaves, flowers, and seeds to create a pleasant household smell.

A TOPICAL: The process of relieving sore muscles or joints is not complicated. It only takes time to infuse.

A RECIPE TO INCREASE CIRCULATION: The options are leaves or flowers of peppermint, oregano, cayenne, lavender, or chamomile. Once selected, wash the leaves and chop roughly one inch in diameter to measure ¼ cup. Add to a clean, glass Mason jar. Cover the plants fully with either rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, or -proof vodka. Allow to steep for six weeks and shake the contents daily. Strain. Although optional, you can add a pinch of menthol crystals or two drops of essential oil. Label the bottom with the ingredients and a message which includes, “For external use only!” With a -tip apply to the areas and allow to dry.

The need to grow plants is intuitive. Is its purpose just for enhancing beauty, or can it serve a medicinal cause? The empowerment provided by growing can improve health and overall wellness. Find a recipe that benefits everyone in the household!

“With all the excitement generated by the release just weeks ago of the latest installment of the Star Wars saga, this is a concert not to be missed,” said Timothy Redmond. “ ohn Williams film scores have become beloved and iconic masterpieces and young and old alike will find their spirits souring at this concert.”

Williams is one of today’s most accomplished composers.

He has won 24 Grammy Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards, five Academy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards. With 51 Academy Award nominations, he is the second most-nominated individual, after Walt Disney.

planning has been shown to help with all aspects of eating—there is less stress every evening deciding what to eat, less money spent on groceries by avoiding last-minute trips to the grocery store when hungry, and peace of mind knowing that you don’t have to think of what to cook for an entire week.

Even with these perks, though, it can be daunting to decide what to make for an entire week. This is where our alliteration plan comes in! By having a set day every week that you make a category of food, it helps you think of recipes, therefore, reducing stress. MEATLESS MONDAY: It is good for your heart, wallet, and the earth, to cut meat out of a few of your meals a week. There are so many different options for meatless meals, either by substituting vegetables for meat, such as portabella mushrooms, or by using a recipe that was created to be vegetarian, such as a vegetable-stuffed butternut squash.

There are so many delicious options to choose from: enchiladas, burritos, tacos, tostadas, and burrito bowls are only a few ideas to start with. Within each of these ideas, there are a million possibilities.

Depending on the meat chosen (or vegetarian option) and toppings, you can easily have a completely different meal every Tuesday for an entire year

or you can do what most other families in America do: have pizza. Making a (somewhat) balanced homemade pizza is significantly easier than many people realize—roll-out pizza dough is cheap and easy, and you can add whatever toppings give you joy. Or, if you know you’re not going to have the energy to cook, you can plan to order out.

The wacky thing about Wednesday is that you try a new recipe every Wednesday. This is your day to get crazy and try something new. If you are an adventurous chef, this is your day to shine.

Alternatively, you can use this day to allow your children to choose (and cook) your dinner.

This day depends on the weather; during warmer months, salads are a healthy and cool dinner option. To make them hearty enough to be filling, you can add protein and other toppings that will leave you satisfied. When it’s cold out, soup is the way to go; and if you don’t feel like stirring excessively over the stove, the crockpot is your best friend. If you really want to be fancy, you can even do a mix-and-match and have a salad course before your main soup course.

THROWAWAY THURSDAY: Also known as leftover night, this is a crucial day to clear out your fridge and avoid wasting food. If you don’t have quite enough food left over to feed your entire family, you can also supplement with frozen vegetables or whatever your “go-to” meal is—such as chicken nuggets or mac and cheese.

A 20-20 Outlook for Self-Care

We’ve

made it into 2020, and once again, we are engulfed in the repetitive “new year, new me” expression. So, what exactly does making it to a New Year mean to you? Are you the type who makes New Year resolutions and aggressively makes changes for yourself and your life? Or do you approach the New Year allowing any life changes to occur naturally? Whether you make New Year resolutions or not, one change we should approach with heavy intent is self-care. Self-care is paramount to our well-being, and nobody knows how to take care of ourselves the way we do. Here are some ways to amplify our self-care techniques this year.

once a day, a few times a week, or a few times a month, whichever works best for you. If you want, you can change it up by going vegan for a day, a week, or even a month!

Make an agenda and stick to it! Every day, we wake up with a daily agenda downloaded into our minds. Some of us jump right on it as soon as we get out of bed. Others only check off half the items on their “to-do” list, and the remaining folks procrastinate and put off their tasks until the next day, simply because they get a little anxious about doing them.

Having a daily agenda, even if it’s our day off work, engages us in productivity.

Productivity is a habit that leads us to success. There are things we’re required to do today that will make tomorrow greater. And when you don’t stick to your agenda, the goals you’re working on will be delayed. So make your agenda and stick to it!

Keep a “Gratitude” journal. Be self-reflective this year, and keep a journal of your daily thoughts, revelations, ideas, and even scribble down your frustrations. Journaling is one of the best ways to discover ourselves and locate any faults within us that we need to perfect.

Give an encouraging word to someone every day. What does encouraging someone do for you? Does it make you happy to see them uplifted? Does it make you feel good about yourself, because you just made a difference in someone’s day?

This is an amazing self-care technique, because giving someone a positive word of encouragement is a mood booster and makes you feel uplifted the whole day.

Another way to encourage someone is by speaking to a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. This will refresh both of you in many ways, and surely your friend will be excited to hear from you.

Cook a healthy meal for yourself. Are you working on eating healthier? Cooking yourself a healthy breakfast, lunch, or dinner will give you not only a sense of accomplishment, but will make your mind and body feel at peace, too. Don’t just try this once, but try cooking a healthy meal

Take a walk! Or engage in any kind of physical exercise! But taking a walk does wonders for our minds. It clears our minds and relaxes us, elevates our mood, and engages our neurons (brain cells), which helps with connectivity, making new thoughts and ideas possible.

Thus, it’s an effective remedy for writers’ block, or if you need help brainstorming a project.

Listen to motivational speeches more frequently. Last year, you may have had the television or a playlist of the latest songs playing in the background as you drove, cleaned your home, or cooked dinner. Try replacing television and radio with motivational speeches or church sermons. Doing so will gradually feed your mind with more positivity.

Remember: you are what your surroundings are feeding you, so make your surroundings uplifting!

Find a new hobby that interests you. Flex your brain and challenge your ways of thinking by picking up a new hobby, particularly one that brings you out of your element. If we don’t use our brain cells, we will end up losing them eventually. So keep your minds engaged this year!

There are additional ways to improve on our self-care: having our own spa day, volunteering in our local area, and reading for 30 minutes a day. A better year starts with a better you. Put yourself into the mindset to make things happen in 2020!

The

th-annual Cheers! to Brenner Children’s Hospital, presented by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Carolinas Realty, was held Friday, Nov. 22nd, 2019, at The Millennium Center in downtown Winston-Salem.

More than 400 guests were in attendance to support Brenner Children’s, part of Wake Forest Baptist Health. Over $160,000 was raised at this year’s event for support of the Dale and Karen Sisel Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Brenner Children’s, which recently completed an expansion from an eight-bed, one-room ICU, to 51 private rooms.

Guests enjoyed gourmet food from area restaurants and caterers, Old Fashioneds—the signature cocktail—craft beer, and some array wine varietals.

The evening was highlighted by the Battle of the White Coats Cooking Competition, with area chefs Claire Calvin, Travis Myers, and Peyton Smith, teaming with the leadership team from Brenner Children’s, including Dr. Allison McBride, Dr. Tom Pranikoff and Dr. Alisa Starbuck. Attendees had the opportunity to bid on exciting live auction items, participate in a paddle raise, play a ring toss game for prizes, and enjoy the evening with friends!

“The funds raised at Cheers! represent a wonderful way to wrap-up our campaign for the Dale and Karen Sisel Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dealing with a Child that is Afraid of Animals

Children

can have a lot of fears. One of those fears that can be difficult to deal with is a fear of animals.

Maybe they don’t like dogs or cats, or perhaps any animal can make them afraid. It might be something that happened to them that causes a fear, or it can be totally irrational. Either way, that fear is very real to them, and as their parent or caregiver, you have to understand it and help the child deal with it.

The biggest problem with a child being afraid of animals is that they are everywhere.

If you don’t have pets in your home, it is likely that your neighbors or friends do. This means that at some point, you have to think about your child being faced with a situation where their fear is brought to the forefront. Other types of fear can be avoided. But this is a fear that you just can’t escape.

So, what do you do? As a parent or caregiver of a child with this fear, you obviously want to be able to help the

child navigate this fear in the healthiest way possible. It also isn’t always an option to isolate the child from animals, so you need to have some coping mechanisms in place to help both of you deal with this situation when it occurs.

Here are a few tips.

Talk about Why If your child is verbal, ask them about their fear. Maybe they were frightened by a specific experience or they get more frightened by animals that are larger than them. You won’t know if you don’t ask. And getting the specifics can help you ease their fear.

Validate the Fear It is very important to tell your child that you understand that they are afraid and that, even if it is irrational, it is very real to them. They won’t be able to trust you to help them work through it if they don’t think you understand how they are feeling.

Ask About Animals and Prepare When you are invited to

someone’s house, be sure to ask if they have animals and let them know your child is afraid. By doing this, the expectation is set that there may be a problem and everyone will be prepared to handle it. Let your child know that animals will be present and ask the host to help you introduce your child to the animal slowly.

Introduce Animals Slowly Always be prepared to introduce your child to animals slowly in a controlled way. Look at the animal through a door or behind a fence before getting your child any closer. This will give your child a chance to prepare for the encounter and can be very helpful.

Reward Successful Encounters When your child has a successful encounter with an animal, be sure to praise them. It is also helpful to point out the joy that they may have experienced when the fear did not take over the situation.

Take Small Steps in the Right Direction Taking your child to the pet store or to the local animal shelter can go a long way in getting them used to animals.

Often times, the employees in these establishments will tell you which animals are easier to approach and more gentle.

A few trips over time may really make a difference in easing the fear.

If All Else Fails, Seek Professional Help If you feel like nothing is working, and your child’s fear is getting worse, it may be time to seek professional help. Start by talking to your child’s pediatrician. They will be able to provide you with the tools you need to help you deal with the issue and refer you to the proper resources.

All children have fears; it is completely normal. If this is the fear that your child is facing, be hopeful that using these tips can help your child move forward and get more comfortable facing that fear.

With the demands of now versus later, employees understand they must apply the well-worn adage, “Work smarter, not harder,” to maintain a level of happiness, creativity, and enjoyment for the job.

But What Does It Mean?

Hard work has a definable long-term objective, which requires careful attention to detail. Similar to a juggler.

If steps change, the circular process disconnects and fails. Longer hours equal exhaustion; however, the plan in working smarter offers more time to spend away from work.

Reflection Recognizes Success The day-to-day can feel like a wheel. Regardless of the lack of air or the declining level of tread, the motion continues.

While we often acknowledge

our likes and dislikes, it is rare to recognize how you spend your time, because the wheel must spin! Do you find you are more alert and focused at a particular time of the day?

And what aspects of your job are most enjoyable? You may enjoy communication or the result of a completed project. Great! It’s essential to identify the areas in which you shine!

Create a Daily Agenda At times, it’s hard to sit in a chair for endless hours and concentrate. In those moments, the focus should transition to a low-priority task. One solution is to create a daily agenda. Be methodical in structuring your itinerary with the top priorities. By following a list, you’re less like to avoid straying from the goal and wasting hours on meaningless tasks.

Just remember, you can protect your time while balancing relationships.

Make Physical Exercise a Priority xhaustion arrives midmorning, after lunch, and usually towards the end of the day; therefore, incorporate some form of physical activity into your schedule. Studies prove a healthy workforce is more productive, requires less health care, and is infrequently absent. Think beyond your need to stretch your legs and feet. A brisk walk can replace the choice to grab a snack. Time away from your screen and phone is an essential part of the “work smarter” movement.

Invite a few colleagues and dedicate time to walking the parking lot. You’ll discover others will join your “club,”

and soon, the mornings will include a 20-minute powerwalk before the workday even begins!

Make After-Work Plans The workday must end sometime! Right? An external force, such as planning an evening with the family or friends, could be the right motivation to stay on task! While you may think after-work events as costly, consider planning low-cost get-togethers such as a dinner-in and a movie, or participating in a game night.

The goal of creating a “workfree evening” is to help you remain focused at work while enjoying your time!

No matter if you are a student or employee, the tips for working smarter, not harder apply to everyone.

It takes reflection, a plan, a promise to yourself to stay on task, and to separate work from your personal life. It’s possible, especially if you want to feel enthusiastic and ready to welcome another Monday morning! Every day you can creatively increase your performance!

you live your life accepting your nerd-dom, it’s a liberating feeling. At least that’s the way local virtual assistant, Denise Heidel, feels about it. As her business, The Office erd irtual Assistant, prepares to celebrate its first anniversary, we decided to ask Denise to share a few things about her role as an office nerd assistant.

KATIE: First thing—Why “The Office a response.

DENISE: Oh, yes, people get a kick out of it. It’s true. I am a nerd, and I know it. I figured I might as well own it.

Plus, there’s a little bit of a double entendre there. My husband and I are big fans of the T Show, The Office.

So, there’s a little bit of a double meaning.

KATIE: Your website says, “Spreadsheets and essays make me happy.” That’s not something you hear every day. I mean, I know you love to write, because you’ve been a member of the Forsyth Magazines writing team for as long as I have, but spreadsheets? Really?

DENISE: Yes, I know I’m weird that way. But it’s true. Yes, you know I love to write, but there’s this analytical side of me, too, and that part loves building spreadsheets and creating databases that cohesively organize information. If I can add a few pivot tables and charts in there—I’m even happier.

KATIE: Have you seen a doctor about this condition??

Just kidding...How did you discover this love for spreadsheets?

DENISE: My first “real” job in Corporate America was scheduling catalog production. This was 25 years ago, and I was hired to make sure every step of the process stayed on track, and adjust the schedule as needed. The woman who trained me spent the first day telling me how easy it was and then didn’t come back for the second day of training. And she was using a program that I didn’t know, and my boss didn’t know either. We found it cumbersome, so together, we figured out a way to build a calendar tracking system in Excel. I learned so much from that first experience, and it was so much fun when we found a solution! It’s something I’ve enjoyed ever since. There’s always something to learn and discover in Excel. In every job I’ve had for the last 25 years, I’ve used it. And every time, I’ve been able to use it to figure out ways to streamline processes and make things easier.

KATIE: So how has self-employment been for you?

DENISE: It’s been great! This is actually Self-employment Take 2. I wanted to do this in 2008, but didn’t know how to network or really manage a business. Then, I accidentally ended up working for the magazines full- time. While I later took another job in 20 , it just felt like it was time to try it again. And I’m so blessed!

I am like a turtle—carrying my past employers with me! I took my last job and maintained my relationship with Forsyth Magazines.... And after I resigned from that job, I’ve kept my relationship with them as a freelance consultant.

KATIE: I heard a story that a billboard had a significant impact on you and how it changed the course of your career. Will you share that story?

DENISE: Sure! When I quit my job in 2008, I was a single parent.

I wanted to be home more and be there for my son, but I just couldn’t figure out how to get the business off the ground. Almost a year later, I was sad, scared, overwhelmed, and my anxiety was at an all-time high. I saw a billboard for Allegacy Federal Credit Union that said, “You don’t need a new dream, you just need a new direction.” I wasn’t an active Christian at that point in my life, but as I look back on it—I do believe God was speaking to me that day. He put me on a path I didn’t expect, and eventually, He brought me back full circle. It’s not a new dream, but it did take me in a different direction.

KATIE: So, after a year in business, what do you love most about your new career?

DENISE: I love the diversity of it. I’ve got a wide range of clients who represent a number of different fields. It has been really interesting to be involved in all these different industries and learn a little more about them. I love working from home and having my dog with me in my office! It’s been everything I’ve hoped for and more! I am so grateful to everyone who has entrusted me as their virtual assistant and office nerd!

Learning to Be a Responsible Citizen at Any Age

of growing up includes learning how to be a responsible citizen in your community, state, and country. This can be a hard skill for a child to learn, but with the help of their loved ones, school, and community, being a responsible citizen and contributing to the good of society can be a simple task with simple actions. However, it may be confusing as to where to begin teaching these lessons. Let’s take a look at some of the ways.

1. Teach the three “R’s” of citizenship: respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness. When it comes to being a good citizen, most people think of tasks, such as voting, community service, and being knowledgeable about politicians and candidates. While these are actions of good citizens, the simpler actions include being respectful, responsible, and resourceful. The three “R’s” are the foundations of ethical character and valuable morals.

Together, these character traits develop a good citizen who respects others, participates in chores and tasks without feeling as if they need anything in return, and being resourceful by finding creative solutions to issues. Also, these traits are ones that are applicable to all aspects of life and important to know.

2. Be a positive role model. Parents, guardians, teachers, coaches, relatives, etc. are people children look up to in the first place and always follow their lead. Being a positive role model for a responsible citizen means following through with your words and intentions. Make sure your behavior is positive and acceptable. For example, if children hear you lying or not taking responsibility, they will feel as if that is appropriate and will learn the same thing. In addition, a positive role model as a responsible citizen includes taking an active role in community issues, voting, and volunteering.

3. Talk about what it means to be a responsible citizen. Hold a discussion with your children or students about what being a responsible citizen entails and how you can be active in your

community, state, and country. Share personal stories and examples of what citizenship looks like, such as being friendly to new students at school, passing out voter information in your neighborhood, standing up for a friend at school, or following safety rules. Lastly, discuss the rights a citizen in our community has and should follow. This is a great time to look at the freedoms citizens in the United States have, compared to other countries.

4. Ask children what a world without rules and expectations would look like. For example, think about what would happen if there were no rules, laws, or expectations at home, school, traffic, or against certain crimes? Sometimes looking at the responsibilities from the opposite viewpoint allows children the opportunity to gain a new clarity and understanding of why we have and should follow certain responsibilities.

5. Participate in various citizenship freedoms and rights. Take your children to the voting booths on lection Day; let them read and analyze newspaper articles about public issues; visit national parks and historical museums on family vacations; and talk with veterans about their military experiences and thank them for their service. When a child sees an adult participating and being a responsible citizen, especially at a young age, they will more likely pick up on these traits and actions.

Being a responsible citizen is key in today’s society. It is an attribute that children learn from the adults they spend the most time with and it is important that they are taught at an early age, and the traits enforced throughout their lives.

Making the Most of the Snow –

INDOORS AND OUTDOORS!

forward to those snowy days when the world is covered in a blanket of white and you are covered up in your own blanket? Or maybe you don’t mind the cold and you love catching snowflakes on your tongue and making snowmen and snow cream? Here are lots of options for banishing boredom and making the most of the snow, both indoors and out. Be sure to dress in enough layers and don outerwear to stay warm in the cold!

OUTDOORS • Don’t miss out on the snow! Bundle up and get out there and play.

• Make snow angels, snowballs, snow forts, snowmen, snowwomen, snowkids, and snow animals. Try using candy for the faces and buttons or bowties.

Catch snowflakes on your tongue.

• Do a winter wonderland photoshoot solo or with your loved ones, including your furry ones.

INDOORS

• Go tubing, sledding, skiing, and snowboarding.

• Stay all nice and warm and cozy indoors and watch the snowfall from your window.

• Volunteer to shovel people’s driveways or get paid for clearing their snow.

Sit by the fire and play games; knit or crochet; or read books and magazines.

• Make a snow maze or labyrinth that leads to a snow fort.

• Take a bubble bath: Add variety with Epsom salt and essential oils.

• Make snow cream or your own creative custom drink. Make cocktails or mocktails using fresh, clean slushy snow as your ice.

• Stay warm in the kitchen by the oven: Bake up a storm and try cooking a new recipe.

An Undiscovered Talent

I’m

a writer. I didn’t always know I was. I didn’t grow up thinking one day I’ll be a writer, it just kind of happened. That’s the way life is. We never know when the opportunities will come and what life will demand of us. Some of us never realize our true talent inside. Writing is one of those things that comes naturally to me. I never realized how much of a storyteller I was by comparison, until one day in my early twenties while working in an office I met this young lady who was an aspiring writer herself. For her it was different. Although she was exceptional at it, she never seemed to have the courage to show her work to the people who needed to see it most. She lacked confidence in herself.

Not overall, because she was successful and had a good life, but just when it came to her passion. Her fear of not being accepted or approved was greater than her desire to commit herself to her craft.

She fell into a trap that is often felt especially in the field of arts. Whether it’s legitimate or not, it’s easy to find favor in someone else’s work and doubt your own talent by comparison. But that’s a huge mistake; just because we feel someone else has a flair for our shared field doesn’t mean that our ability is not worthy in its own right. The beauty is in the sharing of the collective gifts that make the world a more interesting place to live. There’s no room for jealousy or doubt if you really want to succeed. The best way is to learn what you can from others to develop your own voice and skills. Then remember to help others along the way in their journey to be the best they can be. By helping others succeed, we increase our own self-worth by default.

to you, the reader, along with my boys, for this year in particular, is that you take the time to look inside yourself and find your individual talent. It’s been suggested you can think about what you did and enjoyed when you were younger. Or perhaps, something you do now without getting paid, simply because you like doing it. Then ask yourself, how can the world use this talent? When you can merge your talent with the needs of the community around you, it provides a source of fulfillment beyond anything you would have ever imagined.

I realize we live in a world where talent is measured by the value society places on the end product or service. When it comes to the arts, that value is based on an individual’s own perspective and therefore, can vary from one extreme to the other. The true value in many cases may never be realized, especially if the work is not seen by just the right individual who can make a difference. As the old saying goes, “One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.”

Therefore, you may want to avoid looking at this initially from the perspective of making a profit.

Doing so could sabotage your efforts in the beginning. Instead, just let it play out on its own. In the words of Werner Erhard, “Ride the horse in the direction it’s going.”

If the reward is to be monetary, it will happen. If the reward is to be on a more personal level, then let that happen. And if you’re most fortunate, it occurs both ways.

My boys are getting older now, and, as expected, they are grappling with what they want to do with their lives, and how or even if they can incorporate their own interests and talents into a career that feeds and nourishes that ability.

To that end, it’s not just a New Year, it’s a new opportunity, and the mere fact that it’s 2020 is symbolic in nature. My challenge

Think about it in the New Year, nurture it, and just see where it takes you. Don’t give up your day job before you know for sure—that’s just playing it safe. But unlike that young lady, don’t push it into the corner and forget about it, either. You just might make a difference in the world in a positive fashion that you never anticipated. And that’s something the world needs a little more of.

Another Year Begins There was a song in the Sound of Music titled “No Way to Stop It.” Part of the lyrics are: “While somersaulting at a cockeyed angle; We make a cockeyed circle ‘round the sun; And when we circle back to where we started from; Another year has run.

And there’s no way to stop it; No, there’s no way to stop it; If the earth wants to roll around the sun.”

I don’t want to stop it, but I wouldn’t mind slowing it down a bit. When I was a child, it seemed like forever to get from one holiday to the next; to get from one school break to another; and even, at times, one weekend to the next. However, summer vacation—actually, all vacations— went by way too fast. ow, I find myself thinking about the mature (I refuse to use the word “old”) person’s lament, “Where did the year go?” 365 days was feeling more like 100, until I stopped and looked back at the year that has just passed.

Last January, we made our biennial family trip to Disney World. I admit I love going to the “Happiest Place on Earth.” It is one of the few times our three daughters, sons-in-law and seven grandchildren all get to be together for five days of pure enjoyment. As there are of us, and the grandchildren all have different parks they want to be in at any given time, my husband and I are the rovers, spending time with each group. I love watching the grandchildren experience something that two years before they had shied away from. I love all of us having dinner and recalling everything we have seen, ridden, eaten, and bought. I am already looking forward to our 2021 trip!

I will, however, be going several times before then, just as my husband and I have in the past—yes, we really do love it.

My husband’s 2019 New Year’s resolution (well, one of them) was to travel somewhere once a month. Did we do that, no, but we did seem to be on the road quite often.

I felt guilty that I didn’t see my Charlotte grandkids as much as I would have liked. Before we moved, I often went for just a few hours, as it was only a 90-minute trip.

I could attend a school program or special sports event, take them for a treat, and still make it home for dinner.

Now, whether my husband and I go together or I go alone, we spend at least one night with them. As my daughter pointed out, the extra time gives us more quality, as well as quantity, time. It gives me time with each one of them to hear about what they’re doing in school, their current likes and dislikes, and anything and everything else they want to talk about. And at the ages of 12, almost nine and soon-to-be-6, that’s a lot! They know they can Facetime me any time. We will make the drive to see them perform on the stage or on the soccer or field hockey fields, or at any event that is important in their lives.

Along with our Charlotte angels, we now reside in the same town as our other two daughters, so our four other grands are just a few miles away. It is an absolute joy to watch them grow up. We have been here to see so many of their firsts, and with ages of , , , and , there will be so many more.

The rest of 2019 included a baptism, several birthdays, beach trips, a much-needed hip replacement, a trip to Ireland, our annual family Labor Day long-weekend trip, holiday get-togethers, and so much more—all memories to cherish. ow, it is the start of a brand new year, more firsts, and more memories to make. This year will see changes— hopefully, all good, but whatever 2020 brings, we’ll have family to embrace, watch grow and love! “And there’s no way to stop it; no there’s no way to stop it.” But, maybe, slow it down a bit, so I can savor each wonderful moment!

Hit those new year goals before you even get to the office.

“Put on all the armor that God supplies..” ~ Ephesians 6:10-18 Life can be dangerous. If you play any sports, you might wear special equipment to protect you. What does mom use in the kitchen to stay safe?

What keeps you safe in the car?

At some time or another, almost every part of your body will need some protection. When it’s icy cold outside, you need mittens and a hat. Some boots would be good, too! If you’re learning to play the drums, your parents might need earplugs. When the sunshine is really bright, sunglasses can protect your eyes.

We need to take care of the inside, too. Because God loves us, he has given us some special equipment to keep us safe from the bad stuff. The Bible calls this protection “the armor of God.” Let’s look at each piece.

Belt of truth. We find out what is really true when we read the Bible and pray.

Body armor of righteousness. Every day we ask God to help us know and do what is right.

Shoes of good news or peace. We want to live in peace and tell others about the good news of Jesus.

Shield of faith. Our friends might make fun of us for believing in God, but our faith protects us. We believe what God says.

Helmet of salvation. We want to be careful about what we listen to and what we put into our heads. No matter what, when we trust in Jesus, we know we belong to him.

Sword of the Spirit. The Bible is our sword. We read it, believe it, and memorize it so we can fight against our enemy the devil.

Prayer holds all of the armor together. Pray for your family, your friends, and even the people you don’t like very much. Put on God’s armor every day and pray always.

always get a little sad each year when we take down the Christmas tree and pack up the ornaments and decorations. Christmas is my favorite time of the year and saying goodbye to the Holiday season is bittersweet. It’s nice to reclaim my living room and to see an end to the chaos of Christmas, but it’s usually with a bit of melancholy that we return the seasonal trimmings to the attic.

Here’s the cool thing, though…as Christians, Christmas is really not a once-a-year thing. It’s not something that we spend a month celebrating and then put away for another year. Even though the world may have turned it into something else, the whole point of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Well, isn’t that something worth celebrating every day?

Christmas gifts are given to represent the gifts given to Jesus by the “wise men,” and as a reminder that Christ is God’s gift to our dying world. But, shouldn’t we exchange gifts of our love and time all year long as a reflection of His love?

Then there are all of those festive Christmas carols, anthems rejoicing the coming of the newborn King.

When you think about it, though, aren’t Christmas carols another version of praise and worship songs, not unlike those we sing along with at church and on the radio?

In December we appoint our homes with decorations, nativity scenes, lights, and trees. But, our homes should be dedicated to the Lord and a beacon of His light throughout the year, shouldn’t they?

When the angel announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds, he didn’t say. “I bring you good news of great joy that will be celebrated once a year on December 25th.” No, the Good News of his birth, life, death, and resurrection should give us great joy all of the time.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

Researchers say about 60 percent of us made one, but less than two weeks later most of us have quit trying to keep it! In fact, by Jan. 12th, only eight percent are successful. The truth is, new habits to better ourselves are hard to keep and old habits we’d like to get rid of are harder to break!

What was your resolution? Researchers found that the most common New Year’s resolutions we make are—to exercise more, lose weight, get organized, learn a new skill or hobby, and to live life to its fullest! Sound familiar? Perhaps in bitter resignation for falling short, some say “New Year’s resolutions are meant to be broken.” But, thankfully, hope springs eternal!

Jesus, the Author of hope, commanded us to pray for one another. As Christians, what if we made a New Year’s resolution that wasn’t self-centered, but Christ-centered, instead? Such as making a ew ear’s resolution filled with God’s love.

What if we resolved to pray each day for our pastors and staff? They really need our support throughout the year.

Why not be the one to pray these three things daily for your pastoral staff this New Year?

Number 1: That they Hear God’s voice more clearly; Number 2: Know His heart more deeply, and Number #3: Follow Him more nearly!

Now, that’s a New Year’s resolution with real staying power!

Making 2020 A Year of Contentment

Last

month, I wrote a recap of what I learned about my 2019 Word of the Year—“Forgiveness.”

And to sum it up—I still have a lot to learn.

But, I’m ready to take on a new word that will undoubtedly give me a whole new set of challenges, and while it’s doubtful I’ll master it in a year, my 2020 Word of the Year is “Contentment.” My signature verse this year will be Timothy 6 6- . It says, But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. (ESV).

And it comes down to this: I have enough. I don’t need anything. I stare at my closet and think, “I have nothing to wear,” but the truth is—I have several racks that are bursting with clothes, not to mention drawers that are crammed full. I open the refrigerator doors and step into the pantry and think, “I have nothing to eat,” but the truth is—I have plenty to choose from. I have a car in my driveway, a roof over my head, and I have what I need, as well as plenty of wants.

And the question is—what is going to happen with all this stuff?

It’s a question we addressed after my grandmother died in 20 , and we decided it was time (and way overdue) to put together our wills. And in the process, I started to take a long hard look at what I have. Interestingly, it was the few pieces of jewelry I inherited from my grandmother that helped me put a lot of things in perspective.

And what I figured out—it’s just stuff.

Don’t misunderstand. These pieces are priceless to me (though I don’t know and don’t care about the monetary value). But I had to do a reality check with them. My grandmother had left these to me as an act of love, but she is not in heaven pining away for her jewelry. It is “stuff,” and while they may mean a lot to me from a sentimental perspective, I have to understand that these pieces are not critical to my existence.

Her jewelry and all the other wants that make up my life –are not necessary. I need to learn to be content with what I have. It’s a lesson most of us need to learn, then re-learn, and then— learn again.

I recently read Dave Ramsey’s book, The Legacy Journey, which addresses the Biblical view of money, wealth, and generosity. He discussed the topic of contentment, and the challenge is this—when we look at what we have, do we have enough? Most of us would say, “Yes, we do have enough.” But when we look at what we don’t have, is what we have still enough? It’s a hard question, and I think if most of us are honest with ourselves, we’d agree that the “stuff” we don’t have can be an obstacle to our contentment.

When it comes to a Biblical perspective on contentment, most of us think of Paul’s words from Philippians—Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians S . And this verse speaks volumes of the power of godly contentment—the contentment we find when we lean on Jesus as the source of all we need.

So as I study contentment this year—the goal is to be focused on having enough, instead of focusing on what I don’t have. And beyond the material comforts, I intend to study contentment from an emotional and spiritual standpoint, too.

To be content with the assignment God gives me. Content with my relationships. Content with who God made me to be. Content with the talents and skills He’s entrusted to me. Content with the fact that I don’t have all the answers.

Content to let God be God and content with the fact that I am not in control of what happens next.

Contentment may seem to be a boring word to some, but I feel like I’m going to learn a lot this year. As I did in 20 , I will flag my editorial list to give you an update in December! Until then— Happy New Year!

Resolution

“When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?’”

if he had been capable of being Jesus’ disciple when he was unfaithful to Jesus in His most crucial hour. How many times have we felt like Peter?

The book of Ecclesiastes teaches that in life, there is a time for everything. The writer lists things like mourning, weeping, dying, sorrow—but there is also a time for laughing, singing, and dancing. If we focus only on the sobering aspects, we overlook God’s joyful imperative. While life has its horrible moments, clearly God yearns for our happiness.

As we begin a new year, we may be painfully aware that we have failed our Lord in many ways. Perhaps we were not faithful. Perhaps we disobeyed His word to us. Perhaps we denied Him by the way we lived. Jesus will take us aside, as He did Peter. He will not berate us. He will not humiliate us.

He will though, ask us to examine our love for Him. One day He asked Peter, “Do you love Me?” If our answer, like Peter’s, is “ es, Lord, I love you,” He will reaffirm His will for us. If we truly love Him, we will obey Him ohn . esus does not need our resolutions, our recommitments, or our promises to try harder this year. If our resolve to obey God last year did not help us to be faithful, it will not make us successful this year. Jesus simply asks for our love. If we truly love Him, our service for Him in the New Year will be of the quality that He desires.

Psalm points out that God has crowned us with glory and honor and given us power over the earth. But we cannot fail to notice that the psalm both opens and closes with emphasis on God’s sovereignty. Our glory and honor falls within the parameters of God’s oversight. Yes, the coming year will bring its share of hardship, sorrow, and failure. After all, there is a time for everything. But God has given us all creation, love, laughter, and meaningful work to fill our days. God desires that the tenor of our lives be that of joy, and that is where Jesus comes in.

Amid disappointment, loss, and defeat, Jesus has a wonderful way of restoring us when we fail Him! He does not humiliate us. He does not criticize us. He does not ask us to make a resolution to try harder. Rather, He takes us aside and asks us to reaffirm our love for Him.

Resolutions is a tradition about resolving to adjust an undesired trait or character flaw, to accomplish a personal goal or improve one’s life in the coming New Year. Resolving to lose weight, eat better, exercise, save money, quit smoking, etc. are all good. But let’s put at the top of the list, and hopefully one that won’t be broken, to love Jesus more and give Him all our best thoughts and efforts, and in every situation always let the “Son” shine around us.

365 Days of Gratitude

the season for New Year’s resolutions. Looking back, I am keenly aware that the follow-through has never been my greatest strength.

Over the years, I’ve done a stellar job of setting the bar exceptionally high for myself, only to fall short of my goals by about the 3rd day of January. I’ve eaten and imbibed my way through entire holiday seasons with the promise of making better choices in the New Year. I resolved to eat better, exercise more, attend an extra weekly mass (or two…), be more patient, stay in closer touch with family, friends and loved ones, work harder, make more money, care less about money, make new friends, give more to charity and be a better mother, wife and person in general.

All, basically, to little ongoing avail.

But last year was different. For the first time ever, I actually succeeded in doing one small thing every day for 365 consecutive days. Committing to a daily gratitude post was one of the best resolutions and overall decisions I have made thus far in life. It was a bit of a stretch to hold myself publicly accountable for this exercise on Facebook, but it worked. Since it takes on average 66 days for something to become a habit, I now know that finding daily gratitude is a great habit in which to partake!

Starting each day knowing that I would have to post something, I was grateful, for it changed the way I went about opening my eyes each morning. Just waking up became an extraordinary experience.

The early or late sunrise, the first sounds of birds chirping in the spring, the cool,

crisp, or warm and dry air. My alarm clock brought with it the sensations of warmth and comfort from my bed and the hope of a brand new day. I was acutely grateful for my husband lying next to me, just breathing (and sometimes snoring). Most nights, everyone had slept through the night without incident. On cold mornings I was so grateful to be warm and on hot ones for being cool. When our air conditioner was on the blink last July, I was that much more grateful for the times we had it and was quickly reminded of being in Uganda, where no air moved for seven straight nights. I’m no longer just in need of my morning coffee, but eternally grateful for it. The taste, the smell, and the get-up-and-go are simply a few of my favorite things.

Showering became an extraordinary experience, down to every detail. Warm water, my beloved Coast soap, razors, shaving cream, towels to dry off, clean clothes, and long slow mornings in comfy clothes are so much more than they were before. Each day became an exercise in finding joy in, and appreciation for, the little things that I may have once taken for granted.

The rainy days made me grateful for the sunshine and the sunny days made me grateful for the rain. Driving made me grateful for my car, the radio and music, gas to fuel each trip, and most of all, every safe arrival at my destinations (which were A LOT in one year alone).

This daily gratitude post gave birth to new ideas, such as Taco Tuesday in our family.

After posting that I was grateful for tacos because it’s one meal the whole family loves, several people commented about their own Taco Tuesday traditions, and we adopted some of them. We now have all kinds of variations on the recipe but always have Tacos on Tuesday. We even eat at Mexican restaurants on Tuesday during vacation!

Denim, spandex, elastic, and yoga pants are all gifts. Microphones, goodwill, snow shovels, rain boots, sump pumps, plungers, plumbers, massages, leftovers, calendars, flowers, daylight-saving time, flea control, toilet paper, music, sunsets, Chick-fil-a, Jimmy Johns, the Humane Society, slippers, summer nights, Fridays, teachers, faith, bananas and crock pots all made the list and are completely worthy of gratitude.

While I have always been a glass-half-full kind of gal, finding daily gratitude was life-changing. Looking back, I realize that while this past year was a pretty average year in the scheme of things, finding daily gratitude forever marks it as one of the greatest years of my life. The simple act of finding appreciation for the little things is not something I will soon forget.

I am forever grateful for the folks who read, commented, and inspired me along the way. When looking for gratitude, the sky is the limit, and committing to one little thing every single day is totally achievable.

If I can do it, anybody can. So, go out there and find a little thankfulness today, and every day. Life is full of ordinary and extraordinary things. Sometimes you just gotta look!

Salted Caramel Chocolate Coconut Cookies

BY SARA WILES Salted caramel, melted chocolate, a gooey cookie and flakes of coconut. The flavor profile of this cookie is amazing! Eat them fresh out of the oven and they are sure to knock your socks off.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

6 ounces sweetened coconut flakes, divided

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Add ounces coconut flakes to the prepared baking sheet and toast for 15 minutes, or until golden and fragrant.

½ teaspoon kosher salt tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature ½ cup sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 large egg ounces caramel candy 3 tablespoons heavy cream Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling ½ cup chocolate ganache, for drizzling

3. Increase the oven temperature to 350 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. . Add the toasted coconut to a food processor and process until broken down into fine crumbs. . Add the flour and salt, process until combined.

6. In a medium bowl, combine the butter, sugar and vanilla and beat with an electric mixer until fully combined and the sugar is dissolved. . Add the egg and beat to incorporate. . Fold in the flour mixture with a rubber spatula until no dry spots remain.

. Divide the dough into e ually sized balls and arrange 9 on each baking sheet. Using the bottom of a wooden spoon, spoke a hole in the center of each dough ball. Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

10. Using the remaining 3 ounces of coconut, rolled the chilled dough balls into the coconut flakes to coat the outside. Bake the cookies for 12 minutes or until set. Let cool completely.

11. In a small pot over low heat, combine the caramel candies and heavy cream.

Cook, stirring frequently, until melted.

Remove from the heat.

12. Fill the centers of each cookie with the caramel mixture and top with a drizzle of melted chocolate over the cookies.

Sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
