Valentine’s Day! Its time for that wonderful little holiday tucked in between New Year’s and Easter. While some scoff at this day, I love celebrating it! There are all kinds of excuses for those Valentine naysayers!

“Retailers made up this holiday to make money” or “I prefer to show love all year long, not just on one day.” Well, I say, it’s the thought that counts, not the cost, and even so, purchase something from a local business and help stimulate our local economy. And duh, of course, you should show love all year long, but there’s nothing wrong with showing a little extra love on cupid’s day.

Who doesn’t have fond memories in elementary school of making Valentine mailboxes (or bags in my case—we’re going way back when we talk about elementary school for me!)? The excitement of opening those valentines from that special friend or the cute boy or girl you secretly liked! So show a little love to those you care about on this sweet little holiday and make someone’s day a little more special!

is a day full of love, and there are many ways to celebrate with your loved ones, especially your kids. Multiple activities are available to create excitement around Valentine’s Day at home and at school. However, it can get overwhelming deciding on the perfect Valentine for your child to send to their classmates. To help ease some of the stress of finding the right Valentine to send to school, below are some ideas for you to use.

• It is common to send a card and candy with your kids to give to their classmates, but sometimes that can get a little confusing, especially with food allergies. If you are going this route, double-check with your child’s teacher and/or other parents to scope out what type of food allergies are in the class. Easier types of candy to include are chocolate or conversation hearts. Don’t be afraid to branch out from doing traditional candy. Popcorn, pretzels, and cheese puffs are great ideas, as well. One of my favorite ideas is attaching a bag of lifesavers to the card with the caption, “Your friendship is a lifesaver.”

• Candy or food doesn’t have to go with the card.

Instead, try adding a colorful pencil, small notebook; a fun toy, such as a Hot Wheels car for boys and a bracelet for girls; or a miniature animal or Legos. Let your child decide on the cute treat to include with their classmates’ Valentines.

• Most kids love doing arts and crafts. Create a small DIY project for a Valentine. Provide the materials and instructions on the card or a decorative tag. Take it up a notch and let the students make the craft project during their Valentine’s Day party at school. Arrange this activity by talking with the teacher or party coordinator.

They will thank you for taking care of this element. Plus, it is an interactive, hands-on way to engage kids in celebrating the day. A quick Internet search or trip onto Pinterest will give you multiple projects for all ages. Remember to scout out projects where you can purchase the items in bulk, such as construction paper and popsicle sticks. Plus, if anything needs to be cut out, go ahead and prepare that for the classmates. When giving Valentines to a class, it is never okay to leave a student out. Think about materials you can get in quantities from 20–35. The “Bumble bee on a Stick Puppet” activity is a perfect example. All you need is: - Paper – yellow, black, and red for the antennas.

- Black marker - Glue dots - Popsicle stick • Then, cut out two circles in yellow paper, about 2 and 1½” wide respectively, for the body and head. Attach the smaller circle, the head, to the bigger one with a glue dot. Using the black paper, cut two or three ¼”-wide and 5”-long strips for the bee’s stripes.

Attach to the body with glue dots. Cut off any excess black from the body and place it on the back of the head as the antennas.

Create a small flower of red out of the red paper to attach to the top of the antennas for a pop of color. Then, add the bee’s stingers with small black triangles to the body. Then, turn the bee into a puppet by gluing the insect to a popsicle stick. Lastly, add some decoration, personality, and a cute face to your bee. Ta-da!

• Other fun ideas to make into Valentine’s Day gifts include watercolor paints, bubbles, finger paint, Play-Doh, glow sticks, fake tattoos, and coloring pages.

Valentine’s Day is a sweet holiday whose meaning is centered on love. These ideas are awesome in helping to bring the holiday’s meaning to school with your kids. Just remember the goal is to make the Valentine’s Day fun, creative, and exciting for the receivers.

Finding Time for your Marriage in the Fray of Parenting

Marriage is hard. We all know this, and we all know that we need to work consistently on both of these things in order to succeed, but it’s so easy to put one over the other. When you’re in the trenches of parenting, it can be easy to lose the big picture of feeding your marriage to keep it healthy. It is so important not to lose sight of what you need to do to keep your marriage happy and healthy; after all, this is how we show our children how to build their own healthy relationships in the future. While this is by no means a comprehensive list, here are a few things you can do to keep that spark alive.

MAKE DATE NIGHTS A PRIORITY Remember that joyous butterfly feeling you used to get when you would see your significant other when you met up for a date at the beginning of your relationship?

You don’t have to lose that feeling!

Dating your spouse can help keep the butterflies in your marriage. If your normal evenings are like those of most parents, you hang out in front of the TV in your sweatpants most nights—getting to dress up and go out on the town adds a level of fantasy that can be very necessary to balance with the drudgery of parenting and real life.

WATCH A SHOW TOGETHER We can’t do exciting things every single night; it is just not realistic or sustainable. So how do we keep our marriage maintenance going in-between date nights? It can be as simple as watching a television show together. Pick a show on Netflix or another streaming service that appeals to both of you, and watch the entire thing together, one or two episodes an evening. Don’t just watch it in the same room, though, make sure to sit near each other; maybe even cuddle up on the couch together. The power of touch can have such a soothing effect on our brains; taking time every day to make sure we are having skin-to-skin contact with our spouses is greatly beneficial.

KISS EVERY SINGLE DAY If you are in the same space as your spouse, make sure to plant one on them every single day. The only exception to this rule should be when one of you is traveling without the other. Other than that, no excuses! Something couples with children (especially small children) find is that they can go days without sharing a kiss—and without even noticing, because they are so busy and overwhelmed with other priorities in their lives. This isn’t to say you need to have a full-blown make-out session worthy of a romantic comedy every day, even a peck on the cheek can be enough to release some of that sweet oxytocin, otherwise known as the “cuddle hormone,” which can be triggered by physical touch.

DO LITTLE THINGS FOR EACH OTHER The fun thing about marriage is that the big romantic gestures that we grew up thinking we wanted don’t matter as much as all the little things that compound themselves into a happy marriage. It’s so much more important, and much easier, to do little kindnesses towards your partner. Does your spouse generally do the dishes every night? Try taking over once a week. Do they love coffee? Try waking up five minutes earlier in the morning so you can go get the coffee and bring it to them in bed. Little acts of service show us love through knowing each other intimately.

ESCAPE (for a Night or Two) If you have the ability to go away without your children for a night or two, absolutely do it! There is something magical about being able to sleep in, eat breakfast in bed, and be completely lazy together with no responsibilities. Do you enjoy art and breweries? Take a weekend in Asheville and visit the breweries and go shopping for a new art piece to hang in your bedroom to remind you of your getaway. If you like hanging out and relaxing on the beach, rent a beachfront room at Emerald Isle for the weekend. Go camping in the mountains if you’re outdoorsy, and watch the sunrise together under a cozy blanket with a steaming cup of coffee. If you aren’t the travel type, you don’t even have to leave town— get a room in downtown Winston-Salem and explore the city as adults for the weekend.

What better way to be inspired with fresh ideas than to attend the Annual Triad Home and Garden Show, hosted by the Home Builders’ Association of Winston-Salem (HBAWS)? This show is the largest and longest-running consumer show in the area, with over 100 vendors. You will be able to connect with professionals in the industry and learn about the best products and services for all of your home and garden projects.

Experience the latest trends in building and remodeling for indoor and outdoor living spaces, including trending aging-inplace products and services.

In its continuing support for educating local students to enter the technical building trades, the Annual Triad Home and Garden Show features a Career Technical Education (CTE) booth, where you can purchase items made by students. Through a partnership with Habitat Forsyth, Forsyth Technical Community College, Kennedy High School and WSFC Career Center, the HBAWS provides opportunities for students to learn building skills and build Habitat homes annually. In addition, the Professional Women in Building booth will be selling raffle tickets, raising funds to benefit a scholarship program for local Career Tech Education Students continuing at FTCC Carpentry.

Bring the kids and experience some family fun at the Kidzone booth, run by Kaleideum North, an interactive, hands-on museum center for all ages. Meaningful Work Found at Ardmore’s Redeemer School

something behind in favor of a new venture is, I believe, why the term “bittersweet” was initially coined. You find yourself kneedeep in gratitude for what was, drenched in angst for the friends and faces you’ll miss, and a heart bursting with optimism for what comes next. These feelings were familiar ones for me, as a young woman who had long ago grown accustomed to saying her farewells—to jobs, cities, and friends in faraway places. My husband was in the Army and we lived in Alaska, a place that we loved deeply, but knew would never be home like the Triad is. Being transient for the first years of my professional life had its ups and downs, but it did encourage me never to find myself in a stagnant or complacent state of mind.

Cue coming back to North Carolina and working in a place that was enjoyable, but not fulfilling. It was busy, but not meaningful. I interacted with college students for blips in time and yearned for ways to connect on a deeper level, and to feel as though I was making a difference. When this feeling became too great to ignore, I decided I’d give teaching another go (I’d taught one year prior to the college job) and sought a school where, simply put, I’d be proud to send my daughter. That place, praise God, is Redeemer School in Ardmore.

From the moment I signed my contract, it started to feel like home: something which I was not used to, being what my family affectionately called a “serial job-hopper.” Six months in, my ever-transient mind in a rooted body has already begun to feel comfortable. The genuine love expressed at Redeemer for every student, every parent, and every faculty member shows me that these people were walking the walk, not just talking the talk of Christianity, and caring for children throughout their education. They ask questions like, “The question is not, ‘How much does the youth know?’ when he has finished his education, but how much does he care?” (Charlotte Mason) I was startled to find the maturity and thirst for knowledge present with even 6th-graders when I began as a new teacher at Redeemer School. These qualities seem to be largely due to the combination of stellar teachers in a covenant partnership with equally stellar parents and students—athough I often joke with my middle schoolers, they truly are some of the best people I have ever known.

Redeemer’s implementation of Charlotte Mason pedagogy has fascinated me since being introduced to this during the interview process, and though I’m still learning more each day about Ms. Mason’s approach, I believe their usage of this well-developed curriculum has me feeling more at home in nature, more at home as a teacher, and more at home within myself. It’s forced me to step out of the way of students’ natural ability to learn and grow as independent, whole people, and to see them as such: no longer am I the sole person responsible for their love of books and history and learning, but a mere mentor and guide along their journey to finding what is home for them as well.

My fervent hope is that having the springboard of faith and family at Redeemer School reminds each student that no matter how far they wander, they’ve never departed from Him, from us, or from this place that we all love deeply and forever. My hope is that I, too, have finally found a place to be still for a while—and I do believe that I have.

History of WinMock Named for its location between WinstonSalem and Mocksville, WinMock was once a fully functioning dairy farm. Over 80 years ago S. Clay Williams, then president of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, purchased some land along the Yadkin River. He envisioned the land as a family retreat. He also used it as an opportunity to start a dairy farm; some of the buildings built for the farm are still standing today. Over the years, the farm evolved and changed as the surrounding towns and infrastructure encroached upon the land. Eventually, the dairy farm stopped production, and the buildings were left neglected. It wasn’t until 2011, when Wayne Thomas heard about the space, that new life was given to WinMock. He fully restored three of the original buildings—the dairy barn, the bottling plant, and the granary. Since its restoration, it has been listed on the United States Register of Historic Places, and was renamed WinMock at Kinderton.

The Loft The Loft isn’t just a beautiful wedding venue; it is the perfect space for your corporate or non-profit event. This high-tech venue includes complimentary wi-fi, on-site parking and can host up to 275 guests. You receive top-of-the-line service that includes unlimited consultation for your event with a professional and knowledgeable staff, including a dedicated meeting concierge. season is a special rite of passage that many anticipate for years.

Moms look forward to sharing their daughters’ prom shopping experiences to find the perfect gown. Ensuring that a prom gown fits perfectly is important, so that you enjoy your special evening in comfort and look fantastic in all those prom pictures, from those that will be taken in your living room and at the car, to the posed ones at the event.

A visit to Homestyle Draperies & Alternations, owned by Aphroditi Katsoudas and her husband, Jimmy, is guaranteed to ensure a perfectly fitted gown. Aphroditi has years of experience in fitting prom and wedding gowns. “I enjoy working with the girls and their moms.

Everyone in the shop enjoys it when the girls come to pick up their dresses and put them on that last time—it’s a special moment for me and the ladies who work with me,” explained Aphroditi. During the 2018 prom season, Aphroditi shared that she and her team provide alterations for300 clients.

For Aphroditi and her staff, prom season runs from late January to the end of May. Typically, her daughters-in-law and daughters assist Aphroditi and Belen, “her alter sewing ego,” who works at Homestyle Draperies & Alternations full-time. These extra hands are needed during this time to meet the many prom-date deadlines.

However, be assured that Aphroditi personally conducts every fitting and marks all needed alterations.

The initial fitting appointment usually runs about 30 to 45 minutes. The changing rooms are spacious to accommodate fullskirted dresses. The pedestal for hemming is positioned with mirrors and there are several upholstered chairs available for family and friends to enjoy during your fitting.

Over the years, Aphroditi has developed recommendations that she shares with her clients to make their prom experiences not only magical, memorable times, but comfortable as well: Select a gown that looks good on you.

Focus on your personal style and likes while shopping.

At your first fitting, bring the shoes you plan to wear to prom. A dress cannot be hemmed unless you have your prom shoes with you. If this is your first time wearing heels, practice around the house. Make sure the shoes are comfortable from the first time you put them on. There are lots of styles and heel heights to pick from— comfort is key.

Bring any undergarments you plan to wear with you as well, especially Spanx or other form-fitting garments.

Allow plenty of time for alterations—a minimum of two weeks. Heavily beaded

gowns or gowns with layers of tulle take time to alter. “A properly altered gown results in a customized, unique gown that is specially fitted just for you,” shared Aphroditi.

Get a Tan This is another thing you don’t want to wait till the last minute to do. A spray tan is probably the best way to go. You will want to have it done at least two days before prom, so your glow is just right for prom night. You can also try over-the-counter products, but you will want to practice it ahead of time as well.

Practice Your Makeup and Take a Selfie Picking your Prom makeup is so much fun, but you’re definitely going to want to practice before Prom Night. After you pick out all your products, practice your look. You also want to try out new products you have never used before. So try it all out to make sure the look is complete. Then take a selfie. You will know how you will look in pictures, and you will see if your look needs any tweaking before the big night.

Plan a Spa Night The weekend before prom, plan a spa night with your girls. Pamper yourselves with lots of different treatments that will get your skin in top condition for your prom look.

Fix an Unexpected Blemish with Primer If you wake up on prom day with a blemish, don’t panic. Put some eye-drop solution on a q-tip and put it in the freezer till it is cold to the touch. Rub it on the blemished area. The cold mixed with the eye-drop solution will reduce the size and redness. Also, a little primer will go a long way. You can use your primer to cover it up before you apply your makeup.

A Mother’s Love

When

I first got food stamps, I went to the farmer’s market and sniffed and tapped on all the cantaloupes, just like my mother taught me. A ripe cantaloupe has a deep, sweet scent—something between honeysuckle and garden soil. The feeling of finally being able to purchase healthy, fresh food again for my son is one I will never, ever forget.

I was aware that I was supposed to be ashamed to be receiving benefits—that’s how the narrative goes. But I had made a careful decision: As a single mother, in order to lift my wages into a something more sustainable for my family, I knew that I needed to return to school. The only way I could figure out how to pursue my Master’s degree was to reduce my work hours; and SNAP was how I filled in the gap. I wasn’t proud to pull out my EBT card in the check-out lane, but I was also not ashamed to be making the right choice for my family.

Every mother I know is doing everything she can for her children; it just looks different, depending on where you are from. We all triple-check car safety seats, we all cheer wildly at school concerts, we all spend hours watching YouTube videos trying to figure out 5th-grade math. We also enforce bedtimes and put healthy meals on the table, not just because it’s important today, but because we know it’s important for all our children’s tomorrows.

And no mother should ever have to struggle to do that.

Nearly two-thirds of households that receive SNAP benefits are families with children, and I have no reason to think that these families are any different than mine. Through a decade and some change of mothering, there have been hard times, and there have been easier times. There have been years where more than half of my income has been spent on childcare, and there have been years that we have been able to take long weekend road trips, sending postcards back to our friends along the way.

Nearly 80 percent of American families are living paycheck to paycheck, which means that many of us are one broken water

heater away from needing a helping hand. Nobody’s situation is static: We are not either givers or receivers, but instead, move between these spaces. My neighbor is a single father and is out of work right now. He goes to a food pantry for assistance when he needs it, but he also helps me make breakfast bags for the local shelter when he can. From my grandparents who bought their house with the help of the GI Bill, to my brother who went to school on Pell grants, to my elderly neighbor trying to make ends meet on a Social Security check, nearly all Americans receive government aid at some point to help achieve their family’s dreams.

No one does this entirely alone, nor do I think we should.

Mothering has taught me a lot about love. Before having my son, there is no way I could have comprehended the intensity of the love I am capable of feeling. While most of my love is heaped upon him in the form of embarrassing kisses at the bus stop and in the tender moments of pulling the blanket up over him after he has fallen asleep reading, parenting has also helped me feel a renewed gentleness towards the world. I want the best for my family, but I do not believe that “the best” must be in short supply: I want it for the man next door and his daughter, I want it for all the children in my son’s classroom (even the bullies), I want it for all my neighbors (even the old lady who cusses if we step on her lawn).

Like most families, I only used SNAP for a few months and let it lapse when it came time to recertify. But I saved seeds from a cantaloupe I bought with food stamps and each spring plant them in my garden—a reminder of how small investments can continue to impact a family’s life well into the future.

I finished my graduate degree and now work at Second Harvest Food Bank where the staff is diverse, but our common belief is refreshingly simple: Everyone deserves to eat. The wonderful thing about planting cantaloupe, or loving a child, or caring for all the people in your community, is that each year, you keep getting more seeds.

Year’s Eve is a special time—a time for people to reflect on the year gone by, and hope for the new year that awaits. However you choose to spend New Year’s Eve, you will probably always remember it. For some folks, it’s a special time to get together with friends or make it a date night and go to a nice dinner. And if you’ve been “out and about” in downtown W-S lately, you may have noticed the growing number of restaurant options, both familiar and new.

The Katherine, The Canteen, Alma Mexican, Jeffrey Adams, Hutch & Harris, Footnote Coffee & Cocktails are just a few of the downtown restaurants where locals went and experienced a wonderful meal and were able to ring in 2019. knows the “Three Rs” of education are Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic. Of course, when looking for a school for my children, I wanted to find a place that is strong academically.

However, those aren’t the only “Rs” in which I was interested during the search for my children’s school, where they would grow and learn to thrive as young people in this evolving world. Respect, Responsibility, Restraint, and Resilience were other “Rs” on my list, helping to guide my children to discover their moral compass, along with high academic standards.

As a “National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence,” Our Lady of Mercy School is a diverse community that excels in academic excellence. Beginning with the youngest students, the pre-kindergarten is the only fully licensed 5-star Catholic Pre-K in the Triad. The lower school has teaching assistants in the classrooms to promote learning with low student-to-teacher ratios. More than sixty percent of the current 4th- to 8th-graders have qualified for the Duke Tip program, which gives students scoring higher than 95% on subsets of a national standardized test the chance to further their academic success with summer learning programs.

Students have the opportunity to be on track for algebra 1 in the eighth grade, setting them up for higher-level math classes in high school. They have a fully functional science lab, an art facility, a technology lab, and also have music and Spanish in the regular curriculum, beginning in Kindergarten.

After going through the eighth grade, the students leaving OLM can boast of some of the highest writing scores in the area when entering high school. That is evidenced by a yearly writing exam given to 4th- and 7th-graders, in which more than 90% of last year’s 7th-graders scored above the diocese mean. Growing up in a world where mediocrity is commonplace, I love that every Mercy child is encouraged to shoot for the top!

With all of these academic accolades, Our Lady of Mercy caught my attention as a prospective parent,

but I also wanted a school to feed my children’s character. I wanted a school that would partner with us as parents to reinforce character traits during the largest part of their day. When I took my first tour of the school, a wellspoken eighth grader led me through the school, politely pointing out the school’s many virtues. I witnessed courteous first graders quietly filing down the hallway for one of their many specials. The teachers and administration expect basic etiquette and respect, which I didn’t always see in other schools I toured. Since beginning at OLM, I have witnessed my son gain confidence in public speaking and politely engage in conversation with teachers and other adults who we see during summer vacation or around the area. He and his friends regularly hold the door for people, or are courteous enough to let the grown-ups and smaller children go first. These acts may seem insignificant to some people, but this increased sense of self and of personal restraint seem to be a rarity in other circles of pre-teens I witness. My daughter needed an atmosphere that would feed her creativity, but wouldn’t let her slide with her academic expectations. The teachers lovingly expect the students’ very best effort and most precise work, holding the students responsible and letting them fail when that is needed. When they are young is the time to let them learn to recover from the literal and figurative “skinned knee,” creating a resilience to carry them forward during the tougher times in life.

When asked what parents want most for their children, far too many people jump to the word “happiness.” Of course, I want happiness for my children, but happiness comes through a sense of self-worth and resilience, learning that failure can be an avenue to greater learning and understanding of self and the world around us. I most want my children to be resilient in life, to look at each misstep as an opportunity to further self-reflection and learning.

These are the traits that Our Lady of Mercy is helping my kids develop as they grow into well-respected, loving young people with a knowledge that the world can bring us together.

Valentine’s Day has seriously

stepped up in relation to DIY projects since most of us were kids. Because most kids have to bring in enough Valentines for their entire class, which is often over 20 children, doing DIY creations can sometimes feel overwhelming.

While some can most certainly be very time-intensive, others can be easy enough to fit in the day before (though this is not recommended for lowering your stress level).

Make sure to get your kids to help you out with the creation of these, and allow enough time for them to hand-sign them.

1. Either on the computer or by hand (depending on how “extra” you want to get this year), make a fun blue design with the words, “I’m so glad you’re in my SCHOOL,” on it. Feel free to decorate this additionally with little fish, a goldfish bowl, or even strands of kelp and other oceanic accents.

Place this inside a sandwich baggie and add a handful of Goldfish crackers in the front and zip it up.

2. Take a small piece of construction paper that is long enough to fold in half and decorate it with the words, “I need S’More Friends like You.” In a separate cellophane bag place half of a Graham cracker, a

small piece of wrapped chocolate and a marshmallow (heart-shaped if you can find it). Fold the paper over the open edge of the bag and staple closed.

3. Pick up a bunch of the paint swatches that are in long strips with multiple colors at your local hardware store, one for each Valentine you are making.

I would recommend getting one or two extra for yourself, as well. Using a heart-shaped paper punch, punch out a heart in each color. If you don’t have a paper punch in the shape of a heart, you can just draw little hearts of fun designs on the swatch. With a regular circular hole-punch, put a hole in the top center of the swatch strip. Cut a piece of ribbon approximately 5” long and knot it into the top hole, creating a bookmark! Write on the back, “My Heart’s an Open Book,” and then have your children sign their names.

4. Pick up some address label stickers that are large enough to place on a ringpop wrapper. On the stickers, write, “You Shine like a Diamond,” and decorate the sticker with any additional marker colors, glitter glue, or even more fancy stickers. Place each sticker on the Ring- Pop wrapper, and you’re done!

5. Fill a cellophane bag with Animal Crackers and close with a fun ribbon—a zebra or leopard print would be a great touch. Cut a circle or oval shape out of cardstock, using zigzag scissors, and then paint with fun colors and allow to dry. When completely dry, write with sharpie on one side, “Wild about our Friendship,” and on the other side continue to decorate with sequins and glitter as you see fit. Make it as fun and wild as your heart will take you.

6. For this one you first need to take a photo of your child holding their hand up in a fist—tell them to imagine that they’re holding a balloon string. Print out as many of these as you need. If you print them on regular printer paper, then glue or tape them onto card stock to make them sturdier. If you have them, you can use decorative-edge scissors as well, and even layer multiple colors.

Using an exact-o knife (make sure an adult does this part), cut a ¼” slit just above and just below the fist in the photo. You can then thread the stick of a lollipop through these cuts, and it will give the illusion of the photo version of your child holding a lollipop.

7. Using whatever combination of scrapbook paper you have on hand, layer 2 or 3 different size rectangles over each other, fusing together with glue. When the glue has dried, write the words, “You Color My World,” down the left side, leaving the right side open. On the right side attach two crayons with decorative washi-tape. If you are feeling exceptionally ambitious, cut up some old crayons and put them into the oven in a heart-shaped silicone mold to create fun themed crayons to add on instead.

Budgeting Now, you need to look at your monthly budget and expenditures. Look at three areas: Sources of income: Calculate the after-tax income from all of your reliable sources of income. If you have irregular sources of income, the best way to arrive at a number is to determine a monthly, after-tax average from the last six or 12 months.

Don’t include bonuses or overtime. These aren’t regular, reliable sources of income.

Debts: You need to know the total amount of your monthly debt. Include car loans, rent, credit cards and any student loans. Credit cards can be a little trickier since the amounts vary from month to month (and you may be planning your purchase with a credit card).

Saving for An Engagement Ring Wedding season will soon be upon us. And, if you’re not married, but in a relationship that’s starting to get serious, the first big-money conversation you may have with your potential future spouse is how much to spend on an engagement ring.

Don’t be afraid to start talking about money before taking that first step down the aisle. Money can be a major contributor to stress in any long-term romantic relationship.

Those early conversations will cover a range of topics – usually coming up organically over the course of a courtship: the importance of saving for a down payment on a house, paying off student loans, credit card debt, having children, taking on new debt, etc.

As with irregular sources of income, calculate your average credit card debt for the past 12 months.

Ongoing expenses: Monthly expenses can cover a wide range of items. They include insurance payments, utilities, gasoline, groceries, entertainment – and any money that you pay yourself, such as deposits into an emergency fund, a Christmas club account or investment accounts.

At this point, the question is whether you have $222 a month to spare so you can save for an engagement ring. If the numbers suggest “no,” then you might want to look at a less expensive ring – or items that you can reduce in your ongoing-expenses budget. Generally, these amounts are more flexible than income or debt payments, unless you are willing to get a second job.

• A target engagement date • A target ring price • A target amount to save each month A target date is important because you need to do simple math to know how much you need to save. Our target proposal date is 18 months out. Here’s the key equation: Amount willing to pay for ring ÷ Number of months until proposal = Amount needed to save each month.

Let’s use some real numbers: $4,000 ÷ 18 = $222.

Setting up a Ring Fund One easy way to save is to set up an automatic transfer in your checking account to a ring fund.

On the last day of each month – or on any day you select – set up an automatic transfer of $222 from your checking account to your ring account. You don’t have to do anything except ensure that you have enough money in your checking account to cover the transfer each month.

And after 18 months, you’ll have $4,000 in your ring account.

You’ll be able to purchase the ring both of you want – and you won’t have any engagement ring debt.

Further Considerations Also consider that there are a lot of less expensive but amazing rings out there – consider looking at a handmade ring (check out etsy.com) or at antique sales for something truly unique that will allow you to save up for a home together instead of going into debt.

Encouraging your kids to spend more time outside and less time gaming or texting is quite a task. It could be they need a nudge to find a passion like none other—riding a horse! Scholastic Enhancement The perseverance needed to ride well can translate into improved performance in the classroom. “Riding teaches a child to be persistent and not give up when faced with a challenge; work through the challenge, make changes to find a different approach to communicate effectively with the horse. Riding requires a learned concentration, because you can’t let your mind wander when you’re riding a 1,200 pound animal, leading to a better focus on schoolwork,” commented Sondra Warren, Legacy Saddlebreds Assistant Manager.

People and Social Skills During a riding lesson, a child interacts not only with the horse, but with instructors and other riders, and develops reasoning and a sense of cooperation. The time spent at Legacy Saddlebreds outside of the riding ring, grooming and tacking horses, helps kids to see there is an order to doing things. A

year ago, we introduced the great things happening at John Yowell Academy at The Piedmont School.

John Yowell Academy (JYA) is the highschool program within The Piedmont School, located in north High Point.

The program, which serves students in grades 9-12 with attention deficit disorders or language-based learning differences, such as dyslexia, provides a diploma-bound high school education while simultaneously providing students with advocacy strategies, individualized education, and goal planning. JYA students meet the profile of a Piedmont School student. They are students with average to above-average cognitive ability, with a diagnosis of either ADHD or a language-based learning difference, such as dyslexia or dysgraphia. JYA students do not have severe emotional behavioral disorders and must have updated educational evaluations.

The program has grown each year since its development in 2014. Four years ago, the JYA program consisted of two students.

This school year, there are 25 John Yowell Academy students, with its largest freshman class to date. The program intends to continue growing to some degree, but never sees itself being larger than 12-16 students per grade level. A key component of the program is being able to provide individualized instruction and goal planning; therefore smaller class sizes are key.

With each new school year come unique program offerings. The JYA Program offers the traditional course work required for an NC High School Diploma that all high schools offer, but it also offers several unique courses to meet elective requirements. During the 2018-2019 school year, JYA instituted its Life & Learning Courses. These courses are taken each academic year and offer direct instruction in a variety of real-world skills,

such as creating a resume, choosing short-term and long-term goals, managing a budget, cooking a meal, changing a tire, and career research. This fall, JYA students researched Carol Dweck’s Growth Mindset (the understanding that abilities and intelligence can be developed).

Students took what they learned and created a Growth Mindset for the John Yowell Academy program and designed posters illustrating these qualities. Life and Learning Skills Teacher Barbara Knight believes, “A lot of high school students experience so much anxiety because such a huge emphasis is placed on core academics and not enough (if any) is placed on the skills students will need to be successful in their everyday life.” This is an important foundation block of the JYA program—not just to provide a strong academic experience, but to prepare students for daily life after high school.

To further the program’s focus on lifelong success and creating well-rounded students ready for the world outside the school walls, John Yowell Academy has a strong focus on service learning. All JYA students are required to complete both in-school and in-community service hours before graduation. JYA students can be seen around campus as assistants for middle school athletics, serving as reading buddies to younger students, assisting with lower-school recess, and taking on projects of their own, like sanding and repainting outdoor furniture for school common areas. Outside of school, students have volunteered with local food banks, the Salvation Army, animal rescues, and by cooking meals for the homeless.

JYA provides a rich academic experience, as well, for its students. This year the program was awarded chapter membership in the National Honor Society. The inaugural chapter induction took place in January, with six inductees.

These members will begin organizing and

completely leading their student service project for the spring, while maintaining strict academic requirements. JYA students must satisfy all North Carolina Graduation Requirements for a high school diploma (including CPR certification) and must also satisfy JYA requirements for service learning. While course requirements are similar to those of other high school programs, students in the JYA program are given the individualized instruction along with strategies for their learning style that they need to be successful.

This year, all JYA students received Chromebooks that travel from class to class with them. These devices serve for notetaking, essay writing, research, and even collaborative projects. Students have also become versed in available assistive technology extensions and programs that can serve as useful strategies to help them complete their work, despite the learning differences they may struggle with.

With the growth and development of the John Yowell Academy program, in addition to the lower and middle school programs of The Piedmont School, space is something The Piedmont School hopes to add more of quickly. The Piedmont School is currently in a capital campaign to expand the campus, nearly tripling its size. The new addition would bring a gymnasium and new lunch area for all students, but would also add new science/ technology labs and about nine new classrooms dedicated just to the 7th-12th grades.

Planning pays in retirement Personal savings are key to living comfortably Michael doesn’t see himself living on the beach when he retires, but he’d like to vacation there with his wife. He worries he isn’t saving enough in the 401(k) account he has at work, but he isn’t sure what more he can manage with two kids, a mortgage and credit cards.

TURNING TO TRELLIS IN A TIME OF NEED

October 15th, Forsyth Magazines’ writers Denise Heidel and Vonda Henderson rushed their family matriarch (their grandmother and mother, respectively), to the emergency room. Shortly upon arrival, it was discovered that their loved one had experienced a hemorrhagic stroke, and she was immediately sent to the Neuro ICU due to extreme bleeding in her brain.

“The next hours passed in a blur,” reflected Denise. “It was so unexpected, especially since she had just gotten a clean bill of health at her physical a few weeks earlier.”

But within 24 hours of arrival, the attending physician recommended hospice care.

Denise said, “We were stunned. But even in the midst of the chaos and confusion of medical terms, I realized the power of God’s timing. Just a few weeks before my grandmother was rushed to the hospital, I had written the Forsyth Woman November cover story on Trellis Supportive Care, as well as articles about their name change in both Forsyth Woman’s and Forsyth Family’s October issues. So, I was very familiar with the organization. With the information fresh on my mind, and from the moment the doctor recommended hospice care, Mom and I both said—‘We want Trellis Supportive Care.’”

Though the name was new, Denise and Vonda weren’t new to the organization. Both had written about the organization when it was known as Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, and had had previous experience when the organization took care of their grandfather/father.

Denise said, “When they [now Trellis Supportive Care] cared for my grandfather in 2011, they secured a permanent place in our hearts.”

“During our consultation with the Trellis team,” continued Denise, “We both felt tremendous peace about placing my grandmother in their care. But Mom and I were both

so grateful that we knew about their name change. We knew a major reason for their name change was due to the confusion of hospice options. Very often, families do not realize they have a choice. Many simply assume they will be with Trellis (our local, non-profit), only to learn later they may be with an unknown organization. Since not all organizations are created equal, knowledge is power.”

Denise shared, “We were grateful that the new name of Trellis meant our request was clear and we knew exactly which organization would be caring for my grandmother. The term ‘hospice’ often walks handin-hand with fear, and I have to admit, I was no exception, despite the positive experience I’ve had with them. And while Hospice care doesn’t necessarily mean death is imminent, for my grandmother, we knew it was. She was in the care of Trellis Supportive Care for the last two days of her life. We knew, however short her time, that she was in the very best care.”

The care Trellis Supportive Care showed was tremendous. Denise’s grandmother was admitted to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, and she recalled that the entire staff exuded professionalism and compassion. “I would say it was unparalleled compassion,” said Denise. “From the gentle and respectful way they handled hygiene and medication, they preserved my grandmother’s dignity. They were beyond kind to our family during some of the most difficult days we’ve ever experienced.”

Bethel J. Henderson passed away at Trellis’s Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on the evening of October 18th, 2018, and though she was not the first to do so, and certainly won’t be the last, Denise saw first hand how every life that passes through the doors of Trellis Supportive Care is a life that matters. It’s a life worthy of respect, and the organization’s supportive care lives up to its new name—Trellis.

Salem Baptist Christian School serves 375 students from preschool through high school. The students represent seven Triad counties and over 150 different Christian churches of all denominations. The student body consists of a diverse population, and the goal of the educators is to discern each student’s learning style and encourage every student to meet his or her potential. This includes students with learning differences who are counseled by specifically trained educational therapists to become successful academically through the Discovery Learning Program.

Salem Baptist Christian School embraces the concept, “Grow the Way Jesus Grew,” which promotes growth academically, spiritually, socially and in physical stature and health. Salem Gymnastics & Swim A 39-Year Tradition That Keeps Going

family tradition meets entrepreneurial spirit, you find organizations like Salem Gymnastics & Swim. It’s a business model that’s been built on integrity, community, and a family-friendly atmosphere. Founded in 1980 by Frank and Barbara Minter, Salem Gymnastics & Swim is now co-owned by Frank Minter (the father), Beth Morphis (the daughter), and Kenny Morphis (the son-in-law/husband).

“Our business,” shared Beth, “is truly a family thing. Even our son, Jon, is a swim instructor and gymnastics coach and our daughter, Page, assists in many ways.

Because our family is invested in the business, we work hard to make sure other families feel welcome and valued.”

As you enter the facility, you see a sign prominently displayed that reads, “All decisions made by this company are based on one simple question: What’s best for the kids?” Beth affirmed, “We provide experiences that grow the whole child through movement. Most children today do not get out and move like past generations did, so, sadly, they never gain the physical foundation they need for a healthy life. Salem Gymnastics & Swim is committed to helping children learn how to move well both in the water and on land. By doing so, we help them build confidence to enjoy being active for their entire lives.”

“It’s not just about being physically healthy,” continued Beth. “Studies have shown that an active child has increased self-worth, is more engaged in the classroom, can hold their focus and attention longer, and overcome academic challenges.”

Salem Swim School The decision to expand Salem Gymnastics to include swim lessons came about after much thought and consideration.

“We opened the swim school in 2016,” said Beth, “and have been committed to teaching swimming—not for competition—but for children (and adults!) to learn to swim well and to love the water. It’s a life-saving skill that everyone needs.”

When you walk into the locked and secured swim area, the atmosphere is clearly designed with education in mind.

There are two pools, and both are four feet deep. One of the pools has a comfortable ledge around the edge to give swimmers a place to rest, observe, and wait their turn with their instructor. The other pool has wide steps that lead into it—something babies love! “They love to stand in the water and pat the steps,” said Beth.

What may look at first glance like toys are actually tools used to help students gain confidence in the water as they learn to swim. “We use a variety of tools to help students learn how to stay safe in the water, float, and move, as well as use proper swimming strokes.”

Beth shared, “We came into the swim school industry a few years after a nationwide boom. Honestly, we think the timing served us well because we were able to incorporate ideas learned from others’ mistakes.

In the past, swim schools were a short, intensive, two-week program in cold water. This often left children with fearful memories and a reluctance to return to the water when swim season drew near.

Our model is patterned after the newer school of thought—that consistent swim classes in a warm, nurturing environment not only help with safety, but also improve self-confidence and cognitive development. Over time, our students learn not only all the proper stroke techniques, they achieve overall body strength and learn to appreciate the joys of swimming without the fears.”

According to the CDC, formal swim lessons can reduce the chance of drowning by 88%, and since drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged one to four, an investment in swim lessons can help save lives.

“We offer classes to infants as young as six months old,” affirmed Beth. “And we have classes for all ages, even for adults, as well as swim team prep classes.”

Parents can enjoy watching their children through an observation window, or on closed-circuit TVs in the lobby area. The pool is heated, and in addition to a rinse shower, changing stalls are offered, as well as four family-style bathrooms and a suit spinner to dry suits before going home.

Competitive Boys’ Gymnastics In the 1980s, competitive boys’ gymnastics was thriving at Salem Gymnastics. Chris Young was a part of that team. After a stellar career in gymnastics, including the opportunity to live and train at the Olympic Training Center, Chris’ Olympic plans were derailed because of a torn Achilles tendon.

Chris has now returned home to Salem Gymnastics bringing with him a boy’s program competitive at the national level.

Beth shared, “Chris is second-to-none when it comes to leading a boys’ gymnastics program, and we wouldn’t have considered this addition with anyone other than him at the helm. Parents love that a former National Team member is working with their children—they are not only getting a true professional for their instructor, they are getting a strong mentor with a big heart.”

For his part, Chris is thrilled to be back at Salem Gymnastics & Swim.

“We’ve purchased new equipment for the men’s gymnastics area, and it’s an honor to train these boys at a higher level.

“I love working with them to develop their athleticism and endurance,” continued Chris, “but more than that— it’s about developing them into young men of character and respect. It’s a joy to watch them develop the skills that will carry them on the mat, but, moreover, will carry them through life.”

Chris brings with him assistant coach Edwin Maffiold, and together they are working to help boys aged 6–18 to prepare for future college opportunities.

Chris remarked, “Our goal is to get them to college first. As great as it is to aspire to be an Olympian, and it’s certainly a dream I understand, these boys need an education first. We want them to love the sport of gymnastics, but we also want them to enjoy their childhood and invest in their academic futures, too.”

Competitive Girl’s Gymnastics Kenny Morphis enters his 30th year leading the girls’ competitive team. Assisted by a staff of six diverse and highly qualified coaches with backgrounds in education, dance, World Class tumbling, Division I College athletics and fitness, the staff is able to blend together at all levels of competition. “The Salem Team is focused on

developing not only collegiate- and national-level competitors,” said Kenny, “but also confident and strong young ladies who are unafraid of a challenge. We want them to have the confidence to persevere through the setbacks inherent in sports and life.

We feel that gymnastics is the medium which allows us to help guide these athletes on a path that will lead them to success throughout their life.”

Preschool & Recreational Gymnastics Children as young as 12 months old can enjoy gymnastics, and beyond that, the fun that comes with learning to tumble, kick, flip, and roll—other benefits include improved balance, flexibility, coordination, and skills that can translate to other athletic interests.

Beth explained, “Gymnastics isn’t always competitive. It’s very important to get kids moving from an early age. After all, the playground is where self-confidence can begin and flourish. Preschoolers pick up on non-verbal cues to learn what the world is like and how they fit into it. Young children do not judge social status by how much money they have or who is the smartest. They judge social ranking using physical markers, such as, ‘Who can get all the way across the monkey bars?’ ‘Who can swim without floaties?’ Or, ‘Who can swing by themselves?’ Sadly, many kids see themselves as being awkward, clumsy, or non-movers before they even start kindergarten, and that can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Recreational gymnastics is a way for children to gain these skills at an early age, and help foster their own self-confidence.”

CHRIS YOUNG: Then and Now I remember vividly the first time I saw Chris Young. Salem was in its early years, and gymnastics was a novelty in town. Salem’s owners, my parents, received a call from the Big Brother agency telling them they had a youngster in their program that was really good at “cutting flips.” They wondered if he could visit Salem Gymnastics to see a professional gym, and my parents welcomed him in. I loved nothing more than spending my afternoons and weekends flipping around, so I understood this kid’s passion. Chris was a skinny little guy who seemed distracted by the sights and sounds of Salem. Coach Bob Kohut wanted to test his skills on the boy’s equipment, but Chris looked over at my optional level team as we tumbled across the floor and said, “I can do that.” And sure enough, he could.

Being in the gym with Chris as an athlete was always an adventure. He was a natural who seemed to pick up new skills with grand style and little effort. Sometimes he would get a little gleam in his eye and a crooked smile, and we would whisper to one another, “Watch Chris.” He was about to do something spectacular that he envisioned in his head and he was pretty sure his body could do.

Sometimes it was a huge trick, like a double twisting double backflip. Sometimes it was something simply crazy, such as performing an optional-level vault over the horse—without using a springboard! Whatever Chris did in the gym, he did with joy, and it was contagious.

If you look up “Chris Young gymnastics” on YouTube, you’ll see that after graduation Chris went on to be on the USA National Team, and that surely he would’ve been in the 2000 Olympic Games, were it not for a torn Achilles tendon. While he was certainly a star gymnast, that’s not the reason we are so happy to have him return to Salem!

Chris has a pure love for the sport of gymnastics, and he coaches with a big heart for helping children grow into strong, confident adults. That love is still contagious, as you will notice as you walk into Salem Gymnastics & Swim today.

CELEBRATING CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH YOUR CHILDREN

New Year is the celebration of the beginning of the traditional Chinese lunar year. Starting on the second new moon after the Winter Solstice, and ending on the full moon, the Chinese New Year celebration in 2019 begins on February 5th and concludes on February 19th. Also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year is a time to reunite with your families and celebrate a new year beginning.

Parades with large dragons, loads of good food, and fireworks are just a few ways Chinese New Year is celebrated.

A fun way to start these celebrations is to give children the traditional red envelopes. These red envelopes are generally given from adults to children with money tucked in them, which symbolizes health and long life.

The traditional foods for this celebration are fish and homemade dumplings, and lanterns are integral in traditional Chinese décor and celebrations, as well as drums. Use the instructions below to kick off this fun holiday to expand your family’s global and cultural knowledge, and enjoy!

DIY Paper Chinese Lanterns SUPPLIES: Construction Paper Paint and any other flat art-making supplies Glue String Scissors First, paint the piece of paper however you want, keeping in mind that red and gold are traditional Chinese colors. You can use paint, markers, glitter—whatever type of aesthetic you want to go with.

When dry, cut a ½” wide piece off the long side of the paper and place to the side for later. Fold the paper in half so that the long side stays the same, and the short side is folded in half. Cut slits ½” wide, going until about ½” from the edge of the paper. Open it back up and glue together the long edges of the paper, keeping the painted side on the outside. Retaining the crease in the paper will create the traditional Chinese lantern shape. Glue the edges of the extra piece you cut off at the beginning to either side to create a handle.

DIY Chinese Drum SUPPLIES: 2 Paper Plates 1 Wooden Dowel String 2 Bells Stapler Tape Proceed with extreme caution with this craft if you have toddlers and are prone to headaches. To create this drum, first paint the bottom of both paper plates. You can look up traditional Chinese motifs; go with the zodiac animal, stick with red and gold, which are considered lucky colors

in China, or just decorate however you want. When the paint has dried, tape the dowel on the inside of one of the plates. Attach the bells to 6-8” long strands of string, then tape those on either side of the plate as well. When those are all secured, place the second plate on top, so that the painted sides are both facing out, and staple them together around the edges, adding a few extra staples to the string section for stability. To play the drum, roll the dowel back and forth between your palms to make the strings fly and make noise.

Homemade Dumplings INGREDIENTS: Dumpling Wrappers Oil for cooking 1 lb. Pork ½ Head cabbage Handful of chopped spring onions 2 Tbs. Soy Sauce 1 Tbs. Sesame Oil 1 Tbs. Rice Vinegar 2 Cloves Garlic (freshly minced) 1 Egg 2 tsps. Ginger (freshly grated) Salt and Pepper to Taste Mix together the filling ingredients (everything listed above, except for the cooking oil and dumpling wrappers). Place a spoonful of the filling into the center of the dumpling wrapper. In order to close the wrapper, lightly place water around the edges and then fold in half. Add pleats and press down to finish. Brown in a hot skillet with oil around 2-3 minutes, then add water (3-4 Tbsp.) into skillet and cover for 3-5 minutes to steam. Serve warm with soy sauce.

The IMPACT OF Technology ON Children

The

days of driving to the public library to find information are now replaced by the swipe, touch, and typing on a hand-held device. Instant gratification reveals a detailed answer in a matter of seconds, including the option of viewing additional sources. The “seek until found” mentality or using the memory to recall phone numbers, appointments, or destinations can now be considered old-fashioned. With just a link to the Internet, the ease of life has changed every aspect of our lifestyle.

Every desirable need, from ordering groceries or furniture, learning how to change the oil, to reading a book is within a hand’s reach. “Technically savvy” no longer describes young teens or adults; instead, the term goes to toddlers, who are quick to meander through screens and games. But if technology has advanced so far as to resolve every question, why are so many children struggling socially and educationally?

Delays in Cognitive Development Parents often remark how quickly toddlers learn to utilize technological devices. As quick learners, young children are dazzled by the moving pictures, colorful scenes and lights, rather than by a container of blocks or board books on a shelf. The very developmental nature of practicing visual, spatial, and motor skills embedded in building towers with blocks, in pretending, or in strengthening hands to climb and slide down, although needed, is no longer the focus in developing our children’s cognitive development.

Attention One of the gateways to attention is thinking, and it is linked to perception,

memory, language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Without these skills, children may struggle to focus effectively. Book nooks or reading corners allow a quiet yet alluring place to sustain their attention while using imagination and memory.

When the environment alters to include a visual stimulus and auditory input such as television, the result offers little need for imagination or intense concentration.

Consider the similarities between jet skiing and surfing on the Internet. While quickly skimming along the surface, distractions pop up, which breaks concentration and memory.

Touch Verses Pencil Children are indeed caught in a tug-of-war between the tools of an electronic device and using paper and pencil. Since most methods of communication often require a computer or the Internet, is teaching writing with paper and pencil necessary?

The answer is “Yes.” And, there is substantial proof. Success in processing information often requires a visual connection such as handwriting one word at a time onto paper. It is a conscious act linking thinking, reviewing, and a basic level of understanding. As a result, students who are “wired” to the Internet perform more poorly on tests than classmates who choose to hand-write notes. Similar to the jet ski comparison, typing is a fast action, but it does not require processing.

In our convenient world of lightweight tablets containing e-books and unlimited “word” documents, there is a struggle between the ease of typing and the pain of writing, especially to the third finger of the left or right hand. Even school-age children acknowledge the enjoyment of touch to holding a pencil. As a result, a higher number of preschoolers resist using writing utensils.

Moderation is the Key! There is value in limiting a child’s screen time while promoting exercise, activities both engaging and quiet, and imaginative play. Exposure to technology is not all harmful. ideo games, for instance, can improve visual-spatial capabilities, increase attention and reaction times, and the ability to identify details among clutter; however, technology cannot be the only skill to function in the world. In place of playing in online virtual worlds, children need time in the real world to spend with neighbors or friends, engage in face-toface conversations, and practice writing in complete sentences.

As a result, technology can be a resource for educational needs. ideo games and hand-held devices are both our present and our future. The threat to our children’s adaptability derives from extended times connected to some form of hand-held device. Parents should be aware of the need to focus on tangible items, such as books, blocks, playgrounds, and board games to promote interaction and togetherness.

a difference in our community begins when we see a need and take a step to help. But with almost 500 non-profit organizations in our area, how do you find your “place,” where you can have an impact?

Love Out Loud is an organization that helps partner people with great opportunities to serve the community. Chuck Spong, Executive Director, Love Out Loud and Christmas for the City, said, “It’s Love Out Loud’s strong belief that most people really want to help out in our community in meaningful ways that connect with what they feel the most strongly about. But, often, they struggle to find the right fit’: the organization, the type of serving opportunity and the schedule of serving that fits them. We get calls all the time from families, small groups, youth groups, businesses, etc., with availability and desire to serve, but [who are] not sure where to get started or what work is already being done in a particular area of interest for them.”

Love Out Loud began in 2008 with the very first Christmas for the City, the largest Christmas party in the city, where local churches, businesses and members of the arts community came together to host a free city-wide party. As the 2009 Christmas for the City approached, Love Out Loud sent surveys to local non-profits asking how people could help during the holiday season. “With the surveys in hand, we made a booklet of serving opportunities in our community, realizing that helping local charitable organizations should be a year-round project. It was through this effort that Love Out Loud became a connector of people with volunteer opportunities,” commented Chuck.

In 2015, Love Out Loud became a 501(c)(3), continuing to establish itself as being in the know about who is up to what in our city.

“We have a pretty good sense of most of the 491 nonprofits of Forsyth County, the culture of their organizations and the types of opportunities they offer, and we simply try and match volunteers to those opportunities. Although we’ve been doing this for almost ten years, just recently did we put some thoughts into a defined process to walk people through finding the right fit for their skills and passions, so that they have greater clarity about what can be done,” Chuck stated. Following the volunteer’s time with the non-profit, they are given a questionnaire to gauge if the partnering was right, or if another organization may be a better fit for the volunteer. Love Out Loud also helps those who are thinking of starting a non-profit to know if there is already an effort addressing their concern.

“Sometimes you may think there’s not a specific need being addressed and start your own group, when in actuality, there is already an established effort to meet the need that you see. With close to 500 non-profits in our community, it’s hard to keep up with them and the work they are doing; that is where Love Out Loud comes in. We have been part of getting volunteers for larger, collaborative efforts like the Joy Prom, an annual prom for special needs individuals in our community. Joy Prom began at Reynolda Church and grew into something that many wanted to be involved in, so we stepped up and found volunteers who also shared the passion for the Joy Prom,” explained Chuck. The non-profits that have worked with Love Out Loud include Hope of WS, Smart Start of Forsyth County, Parenting Path, Trellis Supportive Care, Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC, The Shepherd Center, Family services, Pivot Ministries and many more!

Essential Hands-on and Practical Life Skills

In

our high-tech world of convenience, it is easy for children to miss out on learning practical life skills. The most important aspects of living do not come from pressing a button on a GPS, or app, or through the Internet.

Out of habit and love, parents step in to accomplish basic tasks that children are really more than capable of completing themselves. While most children are educated in today’s world, they need to learn the “work” of life.

Household Tasks By age two, most toddlers can achieve basic organizational skills, such as putting pajamas in a drawer or laundry hamper, tidying up a room, assisting to make a bed, and cleaning up spills. By four, he or she would love to help in basic skills such as gathering and sorting laundry, dusting a bookshelf, and putting

away goods on the lower shelves of a pantry. Despite the numerous reminders, every step a child progresses in the role of self-sufficiently, including personal hygiene, can ensure an independent and productive adult.

TIP: Try not to use the term “chore” for household tasks as it offers a negative connotation. acuuming, laundry, emptying the dishwasher, and taking out the trash are contributions required by every member in the household; therefore, choose another reason for giving an allowance.

Financial Responsibility Money is much more than adding and subtracting, applying a decimal point, and using plastic to pay a bill at the end of a billing cycle. Two of the most important lessons in teaching finance is that the value of saving is equal in importance to keeping a balanced budget. Allowances often are the first step to help kids understand the importance of saving money and making good decisions before purchasing. Saving accounts work as a two-way street. Children who add to their account should see the monthly statement while engaging in discussions to understand the positive influence of interest rates.

Emergency Situations and First-Aid Panic and confusion are the first two reactions in an emergency. When families can openly discuss the “what if” scenario, children are more likely not to panic and know what to do. Show the location of essential phone numbers, what to do in an emergency, and where to find and use an emergency kit. Additional skills include swimming, reading a map, changing a tire, lighting a fire, and safely asking for help.

Handling Tools and Understanding Repair and Maintenance Between the ages of eight and ten, children can learn the purpose of various-sized Allen wrenches, Philips and flathead screwdrivers, and pliers. And, safely using a drill, saw, and hammer.

to engage in a hands-on lesson.

TIP: A basic tool kit, including a knife and flashlight, are perfect gifts for children who love to help at home—at the time when they start to drive, or graduate from school.

Growing, Foraging, and Fishing By the age of six, children can identify healthy foods. An 11-year-old, on the other hand, can navigate through a grocery store to buy needed foods to make a recipe. The preparation for these milestones requires open dialogue and gently correcting mistakes. Lessons expand when discussing gardening.

Even if a family grows fruits and vegetables through containers, creativity in utilizing space is a practical skill that requires practice.

Caring for Others Whether a child cares for a younger sibling, neighbor, or family pet, these interactions can shape a child’s values and help him or her develop the power of empathy. In receiving unconditional love, they, too, need to practice kindness toward all walks of life.

Understanding Failure A poor grade, not making the team, coming in third place, or upsetting a best friend are not failures. Every disappointment results in a valuable lesson. While parents can contact a teacher or coach to gain clarification of the reason, not all children are chosen or should be handed a grade. Hard work and responsibility are lessons that lead to success in adulthood.

Forget calories, these are for a good cause and the proceeds from the program stay in our local community helping girls, who may be your children or neighborhood children, to achieve and strive to grow as individuals and as community leaders. Buy some boxes for yourself, your office, or your family!

In addition to the cookie flavors you love, and let’s face it, we all have a favorite, there’s a new cookie offered this year. For those who must eat gluten-free, the Girl Scout gluten-free cookie, the Caramel Chocolate Chip, is a tasty treat with a better flavor than most other gluten-free store brands.

Also, for those with family or friends in the military, check out Operation Sweet Treat. The 2019 goal is to provide 44,000 boxes of cookies to troops.

Let’s pitch in a send some cookies to the troops and give them a taste of home.

Recently, professionals from print media, public relations firms, news photography and television news anchors were invited to participate in a panel discussion with a group of about 20 local Girl Scouts. Other girls joined via remote access from as far away as Asheville for the event. These girls, ranging from Girl Scout Daisy to Ambassador levels, known as Media Girls, were preparing for interviews on social media, local news shows, and newspapers to get the word out about Girl Scout cookies. Not only were they preparing themselves to be the face of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, they were learning about marketing techniques, presentation skills, and general sales initiatives. Once each panel member gave a brief summary of their particular role, the girls began asking questions. Some of their questions were about how to relax while on camera, how to get the best photos, and how to answer questions or respond to a question that might be unexpected. Being a Media Girl is a serious role for these young ladies and their goal to be prepared and do their best was evident. Getting another patch for their sash was secondary to getting ready to promote the cookie program.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches five basic skills and why these skills are relevant to their futures: BUSINESS ETHICS Acting with honesty and responsibility throughout all the steps of the Cookie Program. Future employers want ethical employees in business and worldwide matters.

MONEY MANAGEMENT Taking orders, handling money, and developing budgets; all skills that are needed from managing allowances to managing paychecks.

DECISION MAKING Where to target their sales initiatives, how to market, and what do with the proceeds. This will be useful at all stages of life regarding decisions small and large.

GOAL SETTING Establishing sales goals and action plans to achieve those goals. Learning to set goals and establish steps toward achievement is relatable to school, jobs, and lifelong endeavors.

PEOPLE SKILLS Learning to communicate with each other and potential customers will be of benefit in school, both individually and in a team environment, and as these young ladies enter the workforce.

IMPOSTER SYNDROME: An Old Term Garners New Relevance with Teens

There’s

It’s defined as a “psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud.’” Sufferers of this unofficial diagnosis often attribute their success to luck or a result of overwork and over-preparing in these situations that eventually can lead to burnout. The key here is they don’t feel worthy of their achievements outright, and worry that others will one day realize their grand hoax.

up to us to be aware and understand this phenomenon and help them overcome it—initially, by not contributing to the issue with overt critical analysis of their accomplishments or lack thereof. We also have to remind them that they have the ability on their own, and it’s no secret that hard work and advanced preparation often times lead to achievement both inside and outside the classroom, and yet that doesn’t take away from their accomplishments. If they insist their achievements are just luck, remind them of the expression, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” We can explain further that there will always be someone smarter and more adept at certain things than we are, but that doesn’t exclude us from enjoying our own level of achievement. Take acting, for example; that which makes Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks a success is far different than what makes a Steve Carell or Whoopi Goldberg successful in their own right. There are multiple definitive differences in styles and levels of success at play here, yet one could hardly say each hasn’t made a unique name for themselves in Hollywood and on the international scene.

As I learned of this “condition,” I recalled the subject I wrote about in my column “Fear of the future,” in our October 2018 issue.

The young man in that particular column about to start college represented a prime example of someone suffering from imposter syndrome, although I wasn’t aware of it at the time I wrote about it.

This led me to realize that aside from adults, students can also be susceptible to this condition, perhaps equally. It’s said that parents contribute to this syndrome by alternating praise and criticism over high expectations of their children’s achievements in school and other activities. The children grow up feeling uncertain of their true abilities and inherent skills.

The point is, we can teach them they must live life with their own unique set of skills, ability, and gifts. And learn not to compare or gauge their accomplishments by what others are doing, but by how it makes them feel about their lives. What makes us happy individually is as different and unique as the leaves in the forest during the fall season. On the surface, many may look the same, but upon closer observation subtle differences can be seen in each that collectively contribute to the overall beauty. Our children’s contributions, be it in school, sports, music, plays or whatever activity they’re involved in, can be seen in much the same way as the leaves’ contribution to the real-life picture of fall’s pristine majesty.

If left undetected, it can lead to the person—or in this case, student—experiencing depression and anxiety along with self-doubt. As parents, we know this can lead to a whole host of other concerns. Much like adults with this experience, our children won’t know it’s happening to them or why. It’s

the saying goes, “Spring, when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love.” Well, that may be, but since alentine’s Day with hearts and Cupid comes in February, there may be an argument made that February is the month of thoughts of love.

As grandparents, you have experienced many types of love, but probably none so much as the love of your children and grandchildren. However, there is another person you should love that is just as important, and that is yourself. As an older adult, you want to be there and be strong for your family. You have been a caregiver most of your adult life, watching over your children, possibly your parents, in-laws, and other relatives. You did this while also handling a fulltime job, whether at home or in an office. It left little time to examine yourself, evaluate your life, your contentment, and self esteem.

Now, as grandparents, most of us have reached the age when life isn’t quite as hectic. The downtime allows for more introspection and assessment. Recently, my niece wrote about things she had learned over the past year. Even though she is much younger, I found wisdom for all ages in some of her thoughts.

• Love yourself.

Forgiveness. Do not hold hate or anger in your heart. Most importantly, forgive yourself—no one is perfect.

• Apologies. If you are in the wrong, apologize. Own up to your mistakes.

• Your happiness is your responsibility.

Friends will come and go, but family is forever.

Good deeds bring good outcomes—even if it is simply a smile.

Never give up on your goals and dreams. People do amazing things at all ages. It is only too late if you let it be.

• Try new things.

• Stay active.

Focus on the positive, and be grateful.

Never stop learning.

As grandparents, these are ideals we need to impart to our grandchildren through our own actions, words, and deeds.

Children are like little sponges, soaking up way more than we are aware of. They go from babbling infants to having amazing vocabularies in a very short span of time. From making us guess what their different cries mean—Are they hungry, tired? Do they need a new diaper?—to full sentences a few months later. It seems that in no time at all they are repeating everything they hear. You can reinforce their parents’ teachings by incorporating some of the above into your life.

You owe it to your grandchildren to give them the best of yourself. It is easy to put your needs on the back burner. If you have been sliding on eating healthy and exercising, start making it a priority. Easing into it makes it something you’ll start to look forward to, instead of a chore you dread. You are likely to stay with a program if you have support from your spouse, family, or friends. Sometimes it’s as easy as taking your grandkids for a walk or playing any number of games outside. Hide-and-seek indoors when the weather is bad will still keep you on your feet and off the couch. A step counter is another great motivator.

Another great exercise is focusing on the positive and being grateful. It is not uncommon for children to forget to be thankful or grateful for all the blessings they have been given.

I recently read that, once a week, you ought to write down three things you were grateful for that week. If you do that every week for several weeks, you will find yourself realizing how blessed you are and how happy it makes you. Have your grandchildren write down three things each week they are grateful for, and let it serve as a reminder to them, as well.

Keep your weekly notes in a jar. Every once in a while, when you get together, read them to each other. It will give each of you a wonderful bond and an insight into each other’s life.

Everyone needs love in his or her life. Start with yourself, and watch it grow.

BABY PRODUCTS That Adults Can Use

a baby comes with a whole new spectrum of products that begin to show up in your home. So many products are marketed specifically for babies; however, most of them have very practical uses for adults, too. Here is a list of some alternative uses for some of the stuff that comes along with your baby.

Baby Wipes Baby wipes are a super handy product to have around. This is a standard product to keep in your car and around your house for all sorts of things.

Probably the most common way for an adult to use this product is as a gentle makeup remover. But that’s not all. Lots of people use them to clean leather furniture and say that the ones with shea butter are the best for this chore.

They are also great to wipe your hands with after you pump gas or before you eat, if you are on the go. Even though they aren’t a disinfectant, they do clean up a variety of things very well.

Baby Skin Care Products In case you didn’t know, skin care lotions that are marketed for babies can be an excellent choice for adult skin. These products tend to have fewer additives and are very gentle. They often feel light on your skin and are absorbed quickly. You will still need to think about the dryness or oiliness of your skin before you find a product that will work best for you. The products marketed for babies with eczema are excellent for dry skin. The everyday moisturizers work better for people who have oilier skin. Baby oil is another product you might want to try, too; it is excellent at gently removing waterproof mascara and can also help moisturize skin.

Baby Sunscreen Baby sunscreen is a great alternative to using the adult stuff. Both products have the same basic ingredients to protect your skin from the sun. The difference lies in what else they add in. The baby version has fewer additives, to protect baby’s sensitive skin, and is designed to provide better coverage, as well as usually having a higher SPF. This isn’t probably your top choice for a daily sunscreen under your makeup, but should be your go-to if you are spending the day on the lake or at the beach.

Baby Hair Products Just like the baby skin care products, baby hair products are much gentler and safer for your hair. They have fewer of the additives that can be drying and damaging. Baby hair detangler is a great product, especially for curly hair, and can be used as a leave-in conditioner, too. Likewise, baby shampoo has a few great alternative uses. Lots of people like it as a gentle face wash. And it can also be used to as laundry detergent when you are hand-washing your delicates. It is even safe and gentle enough to use on cashmere.

Baby Powder This baby product has a lot of uses in the adult world. Baby powder is used to prevent friction, so it can be used to help prevent chafing in sensitive areas. It also absorbs moisture, which makes it a great stand-in for dry shampoo, deodorant, and foot powder.

The best thing it can do is help remove sand that gets stuck on your body when you are at the beach.

Teen-Dating Violence Awareness Month

The statistics are shocking! iolent dating behavior occurs between the ages of 12 and 18. One out of three adolescent girls is a victim of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner.

One in five girls between the ages of 11 and 14 knows a friend who is in a verbally abusive relationship. One out of three teens acknowledges knowing a classmate who endures the physical acts defined as punching, kicking, or slapping.

Approximately 45 of girls acknowledge pressure to either have sex or perform oral sex. iewed through the mind of a victim of dating violence, their situation is complicated. Emotions are tangled between thoughts of self-blame and the optimistic hope that love will ultimately prevail. Survivors of dating teen violence believe their actions in the course of the relationship encouraged the violent or verbal acts. Despite the growing feelings of terror, 33 of teens choose to keep their relationship a secret.

Kayla Hayes At the age of 17, Kayla Hayes met the dark and handsome 21-year-old named Seth Fleury. From the beginning of their relationship, she saw warning signs described as possessiveness and jealousy, the ease with which anger developed, and rage displays. Even though it was her first serious relationship, Kayla remained optimistic, not wanting to give up on the thrill of love. She was naïve about what defined physical, emotional, and verbal abuse, believing her situation couldn’t possibly be deemed unhealthy or considered dangerous. On the day she confronted Seth, intending to break-up, the moment happened too quickly.

Seated in the passenger seat, Hayes recounts, “He tried to kiss me, but I refused and backed up, only to feel him latch onto me.” Out of vengeance, he covered her mouth with his teeth and bit down, tearing the skin and tissue from upper to bottom lip and cheeks, leaving an intentional mark for her next boyfriend.

Alternative plans had to be instituted the following fall.

While her classmates attended college, Kayla underwent reconstructive surgeries and battled nightmares, paranoia, and depression. Kayla wrote, “If I sit down and let this defeat me, then he will only get more satisfaction out of what he’s done.”

Initiating a conversation to discuss teen dating abuse and violence, although daunting, is essential. Here are some recommended apps to help parents and teens become well informed and begin practicing safety. “One Love Foundation” helps individuals determine whether a relationship is unsafe.

Additionally, it provides access to trained advocate support day and night.

“Circle of 6” is for teens and college-aged friends, and allows access to six trusted individuals. With a “touch” to the screen, an individual in danger can quickly and discreetly send a text which says, “Come and get me,” “Call and pretend you need me,” or, “I need to talk.”

“Love is Not Abuse iPhone” offers information to parents regarding the dangers of digital dating abuse.

Teen Rights Sarah writes, “My ex-boyfriend abused me. I knew the signs and stayed. I was 14 and scared. He threatened to put his hands around my neck and choke me until I died. That’s the day I left and filed for a restraining order.”

It is a brave act to end an abusive and violent relationship.

The cycle will continue despite the evidence of tears, small and large gifts, and beginning over and promising to be a better person. In the state of North Carolina, a TPO, termed a Temporary Protection Order, is a free court order to protect an individual from an abusive dating partner. In urgent cases, law enforcement officers can issue the order. By violating the TPO through verbal threats, visitations, or possession of a firearm, the defendant will be arrested and charged.

STATISTIC: Long-term abuse results in consequences liked to alcoholism, eating disorders, promiscuity, suicidal tendencies, and violent behaviors.

February is a month for awareness of teen dating and violence. If you have a teenager, take the time to start the conversation!

Fireplace Cooking

Witnessing the orange dancing flames is alluring in any setting, whether the container is a fireplace, campfire, or grill.

Enthusiasts who love the exceptional taste of food placed directly in the glowing embers often choose to build a fire in all seasons and weather conditions.

Toasting the occasional S’more in the fireplace may be an indulging activity, but why not apply all the same techniques from campfire cooking to your hearth? The glowing coals achieve a hotter and consistent heat for cooking.

In the warmth of familiar surroundings, the environment changes to a romantic setting; imagine cuddling on the couch while anticipating a meal a few feet away.

TIPS BEFORE STARTING

Take your enjoyment of a fire to a new level. Begin by building a fire using well-seasoned dry hardwoods such as oak, which is less likely to produce sparks.

Oak, for instance, not only burns longer and consistently, but it lends a good flavor to fire baked food. Pine is not preferred since it results in releasing excess smoke. Add additional logs to the fire to ensure coals are deep to bury side dishes, perhaps containing vegetables or sweet potatoes in aluminum foil. It will be difficult to judge the first few times; however, you will need to determine the level of coals required for your purpose.

• Stay away from greasy or fatbased foods such as cooking chicken or steaks in a frying pan, which produce a lot of smoke, affecting your flue.

EQUIPMENT

Never fear, you may already have the equipment you need to use your fireplace successfully.

While there are grills designed explicitly for fireplaces, including adjustable legs, it is not necessary unless you enjoy your initial experiences and want to utilize the fire to its full potential. In the meantime, if you seek the food

to contain a smoky flavor without burning, elevate your pot by placing two bricks on either side of your grate, taken from the grill.

• A Dutch oven is a cast iron pot with metal handles on each side and containing a lid. Make sure your container does not have plastic handles; otherwise, it may be difficult to retrieve your pot from the fire. All cast iron pot ware can be placed on a tripod situated just above the coals or directly within the embers.

• One inexpensive item to consider for Dutch ovens is a fireplace crane. The crane holds your pot over the fire, making it an ideal investment for soups, stews, and hot drinks.

• Make sure you have longhandled fire-roasting utensils to remove pots, lids, and are capable of stirring or scooping food out. Think about a pair of fire-resistant gloves, tongs, possibly an instant-read thermometer, and a location to place your pot after removing it from the fire.

• A small shovel will come in handy to manipulate the height or move the coals to your expected goal.

For safety reasons, it is vital to hire a chimney sweep if you use your fireplace regularly. Annual cleaning can ensure your flue does not require repairs, and most importantly, is safe to use.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Before you plan to surprise your Valentine with a romantic dinner for two, experiment first by roasting potatoes or combining slices of meat with vegetables in aluminum foil. Don’t forget to add a little vegetable oil and salt and pepper. Make sure the meat is at least 165 degrees before eating. In your experimentation, record notes such as the time left in the fire as well as any additional tips that may result in a perfect side dish or meal.

Then, you can branch out. A Dutch is ideal for soups stews, or chilis. Another idea includes a cake or Dutch apple pie.

Virtually any food contained in either aluminum foil or a heavy pot with a metal lid can enter the fire.

Thinking outside the box is romantic or can aid in desperate times when a home is without electricity. Try it! Fireplace cooking may become a family favorite. Determining your fireplace’s potential can remain a beautiful tranquil vision or a means to feed the family.

Pregnant Woman and Daughter Saved by an Emerging Form of Treatment

Shaimaica Ferguson’s new baby, Amani Early, gets a little older, she’s in for quite a story about the day she was born.

The tale begins, not with Ferguson’s labor pains, but with chest pains. Ferguson, who lives in Newton, North Carolina, was watching T at home with her mother one evening and stood up to take a deep breath and suddenly realized, “Oh gosh, I’m having a heart attack.”

Ferguson called out for her mother to dial 911 and paramedics rushed her to her local hospital in Catawba County, northwest of Charlotte. She was then transferred to Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, more than an hour away.

In one way, the timing of her heart attack couldn’t have been worse: She was 34 weeks pregnant. In another, it was perfect: Forsyth Medical Center had just started using a procedure that could help save the life of both mother and baby.

What is ECMO? Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, known as ECMO, is a treatment for patients with a wide variety of heart or respiratory conditions that do not respond to the intensive care usually used. With ECMO, blood from the patient is run through an artificial lung, where oxygen is added, and carbon dioxide is removed. The blood is then returned back to the patient.

Essentially, the treatment can give doctors an advantage because it provides the heart and lungs a rest as high-risk work is being done on the patient. The hope is that the body will be ready to take back over the action on its own.

Forsyth Medical Center is unique in that most nonacademic hospitals don’t offer ECMO on-site, along with having the ability to handle the whole course of treatment.

The twists and turns of Ferguson’s journey Ferguson’s heart condition was “spontaneous left anterior descending coronary artery dissection”—a condition that

occurs when a potentially fatal tear forms in a blood vessel in the heart, explained Novant Health heart surgeon Dr. Raymond Lee, who operated on Ferguson. “That’s rare in and of itself,” Lee said. “And for it to happen to someone who is pregnant, is exceedingly rare.”

“You have to do what you think is right to try to save her,” Lee said on the reasoning for using ECMO for the treatment.

“In that situation, the first thing you try to do is save Mom. If you save Mom, you save Baby.”

Ferguson was going into shock already by the time she arrived at Forsyth Medical Center. And as her condition deteriorated, she had to be placed on a ventilator to assist with her breathing.

“Her heart almost gave out, then baby gave out,” Lee said.

“They had to do a C-section on the bed in the ICU. The baby did OK; then we rushed mom down to the operating room. That’s where the decision was very tricky: she had heart failure, pulmonary edema, active bleeding .” A wide-ranging team of specialists and nurses were tending to her situation.

While Ferguson has a very calm presence normally, at the time, she said, there were some incredibly frightening moments, especially when realizing what her baby must have been going through.

“When I finally woke up from everything, I grabbed my stomach. I had a breathing tube down my throat and couldn’t really talk, but I was awake,” said Ferguson. “The last thing I had thought of whenever I went out was, I can’t breathe, my baby can’t breathe. I had a big belly, I was pregnant, and when I woke up my belly was flat, and there was nothing there. I thought I lost my baby.”

Relief washed over her as boyfriend Thomas Early explained that their baby was in the NICU. But Ferguson wasn’t yet out of the woods.

Doctors explained to Early and Ferguson that she had just a 50-50 chance of survival with traditional treatment.

The best hope was ECMO, Lee confirmed, but there were no guarantees.

“Your comfort is our mission”

While Ferguson was on the ECMO machine with her life still hanging in the balance, Amani was brought in for skin-to-skin contact with her mother.

Looking back, Ferguson said, “I didn’t expect to have that heart attack at 36 and have an emergency C-section, and then have all of these other things that happened. It was nervewracking. It was frightening. You don’t expect it.”

Ferguson’s condition was later traced to heart problems that ran deep in her father’s side of the family. Her late brother and father both had heart conditions.

While Ferguson will have to continue to be monitored, she now has a chance to have a long, healthy life, Lee declared.

And Amani now has two big sisters herself and a big, loving family.

Both Ferguson and Early beam when talking about their new daughter. “She’s awesome,” Ferguson said. “She’s going to be a character. Just being a month old you can already tell, she’s going to be very sweet and funny, but she’s going to be a serious and don’t-mess-with-me type girl. I can already tell she’s going to be very strong-willed.” The couple laughed about that last part, and Ferguson admitted, “I guess she did get that from me.”

Take a minute to remember a really awesome day you’ve had. What made it so great?

Who was with you? Do you wish every day could be just like that special day? Life is an adventure, but not every day is exciting. You won’t end every day by saying, “This was the best day, ever!”

Think about how you feel on your birthday, especially if there’s going to be a party for you. You’re excited to see your family and friends. There will probably be some food you like and even a special cake. You wonder if you’ll get some really great presents.

Now, think about today even if it’s a ho-hum, boring day. Each new day is a gift

from God, so use your imagination!

Ask God to open your eyes to the amazing things around you—family and friends, favorite toys and books, and good memories. You might find yourself smiling about things you hadn’t thought of in a long time.

If you can, go outside for a while and look closely at God’s world. Is there snow? Or mud? Or green grass? Look at the bark on a tree trunk and see how it feels when you rub your hand against it. Is the sky amazing? Are birds singing? What other sounds do you hear?

If you can’t go outside, just do some exploring in the house. Ask the Lord to give you “new eyes” to see what’s around you. Feel the floors and doors and walls. Look out the windows.

Hug someone! Ask mom or dad if you can help them with whatever they’re doing.

Guess what? Some of these ordinary things are going to make your heart happy. Do you know what happens when your heart is happy? It shows up on your face with a smile, and your smile just might make someone else smile!

When the Hard Choice is the Right Choice

When

most people think about the day they were born, they imagine their mother and father at the hospital, dad anxiously pacing the floor, mom enduring the agony of labor until finally that glorious moment arrives and their precious baby is placed safely in its mother’s arms. Proud grandparents, aunts, and uncles, gather around to welcome the newest member of the family.

However, when I think about the day I was born, I imagine my birth mother alone and scared as she gave birth to the baby she’d been carrying for nine months that would soon become someone else’s child. My heart breaks for her as I imagine the moment she held me and then handed me over to a social worker, believing she’d never see her child again. I can’t imagine how she must have felt when she left the hospital empty-handed.

I know it was painful, but I am so thankful to my birth mother for making this choice. I learned recently that abortion was legalized in the state where I was born three years before my birth. I realize that an abortion could have offered her a seemingly less complicated alternative, at least, less complicated than carrying and delivering a baby, then trying to get back to life as usual. I know her choice was a difficult one. I know she took the narrow path, and I owe my very existence to her.

I once heard a preacher say that when we are faced with a really difficult decision, Satan often presents us with a seemingly easy alternative. The only catch is that this easy option always requires a moral compromise. Satan sees our indecision as an opportunity to get a foothold, to lead us away from God and down a path that leads to destruction. If you’re facing a tough choice today, pray that God will direct you down the right path, especially if the hard choice is the right one.

For the Win

In

just about every great movie about football, there is the same, climactic scene. The underdog team is struggling, and their coach is calling plays that everyone in the crowd disagrees with. But, the coach ignores his fanatical detractors and sticks with his plan, leading his team to a miraculous championship win. The same people who were once criticizing and bad-mouthing the embattled coach are now lauding him as a hero.

It’s a scene that plays out not only in many football movies, it also plays out in many of our churches. However, instead of a coach and a critical crowd, this scene involves a pastor and naysaying members of his congregation.

Hopefully, your pastor was chosen to lead your church because he or she is educated, experienced and deeply connected to the Lord. He has a plan for your church and dreams for her future. But, just like the underdog coach, he often has to deal with loud voices of criticism from detractors who do not share his vision.

If your pastor is “calling plays” that don’t make sense to you, maybe it’s because you don’t understand his plan for the church. Maybe you’re not seeing the bigger picture. It’s worth sitting down with your pastor over a cup of coffee and asking him what his vision is for the church. Better yet, ask how you and your family can help make his dreams a reality.

Our pastors don’t need spectators; they need team members who will join them in winning the spiritual war within our churches, communities and our world.

Shaking Thing Up

day for years, I’ve done the same thing. I’ve read my Bible, then two e-mail devotions I get on a daily basis, write in my prayer journal, and I compose a daily prayer prompt for my blog. My morning devotion time doesn’t change often, but this year, it’s undergone a major makeover.

I spent several months looking at the evergrowing stack of spiritual growth books to be read, and realized—I was going to have to shake my morning quiet time up a bit. Bible reading isn’t optional for me—it’s how I start my day. But the two e-mail devotions were optional. As much as I loved them, I’ve replaced them with reading a chapter a day from one of the aforementioned books.

It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way is a book about how to survive life’s disappointments by leaning on God. She shares her story—sometimes with self-effacing humor, sometimes with heart-wrenching honesty, and always with the hope of Jesus.

Through it all, even as she recounts the reconciliation in her marriage, she shares a faith in God that is bigger than any hurt or disappointment.

I love it. It’s been an incredible way to start my day. I’ve started with some amazing books, and it’s been both challenging and enriching. Because I’ve been so excited about what I’ve been reading, I started a Reading List page on my website, MyGraceFullLife.com. Every time I finish a book this year, I’ll add to the page. With that said, I wanted to go ahead and share the first three books in this month’s column.

Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit, by Francis Chan.

I’ve owned this book for a while, but it was one of those I’ll-Get-To-It-Eventually books that I always kept near the front of the stack, but never started. But when I decided to shake up my morning routine, I knew this one would be one of my first. I have highlighted every page and made so many notes down the side. . . . I loved this book.

It is wonderfully written, filled with Biblical truth, and is focused on our relationship with the Holy Spirit. Only seven chapters long, this book packs a powerful punch. Author Francis Chan spends time asking questions designed to make the reader think, and gives excellent illustrations to help us understand the Holy Spirit’s role in our lives.

It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, by Lysa TerKuerst. This book is a game changer. If you follow Proverbs 31 Ministries, you may already know that Lysa is the president of the organization and that the last few years have been anything but easy for her.

Between her near-death experience with a distended colon that almost ruptured, her husband’s affair and their separation, and a breast cancer diagnosis, she has, in

Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God, by Francis Chan. I had a different book I was planning to start after Forgotten God, but when I was telling a friend about it, she recommended another Francis Chan book— Crazy Love. Friends, I was so blown away by this book, I went to the used bookstore mid-read and bought all their copies so I could give them away (my copy is covered in notes now). I would even dare say that

next to the Bible, this may be the best book I’ve ever read. It was thought-provoking, challenging, and convicting. The author challenges the reader to stop trying to fit God into a box and recognize that we cannot fully define who He is. Yet, despite all His power, He loves us with an all-consuming kind of love. Francis Chan also inquires into our response to God and challenges us to look to God with the kind of awe, wonder, and reverence He deserves. This book is a must-read.

With every spiritual-growth book I read this year, I’ll be adding to the Reading List page. It’s so exciting to me that God equips men and women to write books from which we can learn and grow. And as much as I love the Bible, and it is the book that I read daily and will read for the rest of my life, I believe God gives us the opportunity to learn from our brothers and sisters in Christ. While I tend to be highly selective of whose books I’ll read (and moreover, whose I won’t read!), I trust the authors of the books I recommend. If I don’t—they won’t be posted on my website.

I am very excited about this change to my daily devotion time. As I write this, I’m currently reading They Found the Secret by . Raymond Edman. My review should be posted by the time this magazine goes to print, so be sure to check out my website (again, MyGraceFullLife.com).

A Culture of Call One

of my favorite responsibilities as a pastor is leading an annual Confirmation class. In my faith tradition, confirmation is a time when a personal decision is made to confirm the vows of one’s baptism. Students join together to explore our faith story as told in the Old and New Testaments, through basic theology, in United Methodist traditions, and the vows one is invited to make on Pentecost.

Confirmation is very often the first opportunity for a student to make a public affirmation of faith, when they claim the faith of their church as their own. On that Sunday, the confirmand is taking responsibility for living as a member of the body of Christ and for fulfilling God’s purposes, as well as joining in the membership of our congregation: supporting its mission and ministry through prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Confirmation is not simply a “rite of passage,” or a class to complete. It is a step in a lifelong journey of pursuing the heights and depths of God’s love, as well as making a vow to live in relationship with God for the rest of one’s life!

What I enjoy most about my time with these students each year is the

conversations we have about their faith journeys. I love sharing with them stories of the great matriarchs and patriarchs of our faith and asking them to consider how God is calling them—where God is calling them.

A few years ago, I began to hear church leadership use the language of a “culture of call,” where within each small group, ministry team, or Sunday school class we could provoke the prophetic imagination in hopes more people would listen to the still small voice calling them to love and serve, perhaps even vocationally.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu writes, “Times change and situations change, but there is still a great need for prophets, for God’s ambassadors, to stand up and be counted.” With the Archbishop, I ask each confirmation class, “Who will dare to be Paul the Apostle today? Or Dorothy Day? Or the Francis of Assisi of our time?” “Who will see injustices of the world and respond like Bonhoeffer or Oscar Romero?” “Who will challenge the status quo, shake the thousands of comfortable Christians out from Netflix and Chill’ on the sectional, and into the community to live like Jesus? Who will stir us to love and good deeds, not simply to affirm the classic tenets of our faith?”

Each class of confirmands reminds me of God’s work through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit: to raise up new leaders who will preach with boldness the gospel truth. Do you know someone you suspect God is preparing? Does someone from your workplace, gym or favorite coffeehouse jump into your mind when you ponder Christian examples, those who shine with the light of Christ?

Readers, I invite you to join us in work of stirring the Spirit and tell someone how you see God at work through them.

Affirm outwardly what God may be cultivating in the quiet of their hearts. Be outspoken, cheer them on, and pray for their discernment.

Friends, you can be part of God’s calling a new leader and God’s forming a new prophet. You can be part of God’s work redeeming the world and freeing future generations from slavery to sin and darkness, simply by affirming where you already see the power of love transforming lives. Somewhere out there, someone you know is searching their heart for a faithful next step in living like Christ. Your words of encouragement may spur them to say with Isaiah, “Here I am, Lord. Send me.”

Promoting a Child’s Spiritual Awareness

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it:

~ Proverbs 22:6.

A connection to something more significant than yourself feels warm and enveloping and provides an element of insulated protection. Immediately, the first thought may be, “That is how I feel when I think of God or my faith.” Spiritual awareness affects children by creating a resilience to life’s troubles, both overwhelming and small. The potential for such awareness already exists in their minds. With a strong presence of faith, children can resist peer pressures, negative influences, and risks.

By possessing spiritual enlightenment, children know they are not alone. How could they be, with an inner feeling of love and a strong guiding light?

A NATURAL GIFT Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens tell the glory of God. And the

skies announce what his hands have made.”

The wonders of God are among the natural elements of a star, tree, flower, the earth, and its people. As children find the flutter of a butterfly or the weight of a rock fascinating, they, too, are revealing a spiritual connection that comes naturally. Lisa Miller, Psychology Ph.D., author of The Spiritual Child: The New Science on Parenting for Health and Lifelong Thriving, writes, “Science now tells us that this spiritual faculty is inborn, fundamental to the human constitution, central in our physiology and psychology.

Spirituality links brain, mind, and body. Children are born fully fluent in this primal, nonverbal dimension of knowing. They need time to develop the wraparound of cognitive, linguistic, and abstract thinking, but young children don’t have to learn the “how” or the “what” of spiritual engagement. Bird and flower, puddle and breeze, snowflake or garden slug: all in nature speaks to them, and they respond. A smile, a loving touch, the indescribable bond between child and parent that science has yet to fully explain, all of these speak deeply to them, too. Spirituality is the language of these moments, the transcendent experience of nourishing connection. Spirituality is our child’s birthright. We support their development when we read with them, talk with them, sing and play with them, feed and bathe and encourage

them. Science now shows that the way in which a parent supports a child’s spiritual development has a great deal to do with how a child grows into that rich spiritual potential.”

RECOMMENDED BOOKS Similar to our patterns of prayer and reading, nighttime lends itself to establishing closeness by reading and talking about the story and its principal characters. If you are seeking the perfect book for your child, perhaps one of the following recommendations would help.

Bedtime Bible Stories by J. Landreth, D. Partner, R. Brumbaugh, and L. Carlblom. Contains more than 180 Bible stories in chronological order that ages four to eight can easily understand.

The stories are short, presented across two pages, offering a relatable experience before integrating a biblical story and a prayer in conclusion.

A Devotional Bible for Kids: My First Message by Eugene H. Peterson: This chronological devotional comprises 50 simplified stories in order to encourage children ages four to eight to develop a routine of reading, thinking, and praying. Eye-catching and colorful illustrations assist young children in understanding the story.

If I Could Ask God Anything: Awesome Bible Answers for Curious Kids by Kathryn Slattery. Written for ages seven to ten, children can grow closer to their faith by reading biblically-based answers about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, Christianity, and prayer.

Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God & Science by Louie Giglio. Children aged six to ten can connect the orchestration of our world from hummingbirds to dinosaurs, to the stars and space, and geology and oceans in the hands of God’s creation.

An excellent devotional featuring fascinating facts, hands-on activities, a “Be Amazed” section, and concluding every chapter with prayer.

And, sometimes, religious questions cannot be answered; yet, if we take our child’s hand on the journey, we can help them gain perspective, and never stop asking questions from childhood through adulthood.

Beauty Hidden Amid the Pain

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. A couple of weeks ago, after reading a section of the novel Firegirl, one boy came to me and said, “I don’t get why Tom makes such a big deal about Courtney. The author never mentions anything about her being kind or generous.” I had to stop and think. The author had made it clear that Courtney was “beautiful” and that Tom daydreamed about her. But my student was genuinely confused about the character’s interest. I smiled as I realized it is beginning to sink in. That the important stuff is on the inside.

I confess that in addition to a solid academic background, I want students to leave my room with the intangibles: integrity, perseverance, generosity, kindness, the willingness to work hard, and a heart for others. While I know modeling these qualities is a great start, it is not sufficient. When I choose novels to read that do not end in a pretty bow, I have noticed students are more perceptive than we give them credit for. The student who questioned Tom’s crush wanted to see the qualities of the character, rather than her appearance.

While reading Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, a child came to me, and we had this conversation.

STUDENT: “I know why you wanted me to read this book.”

ME: “Why?” STUDENT: “Because I am just like Joey.”

ME: “Don’t you think we all have a little of Joey in us?”

This acknowledgment of his connection led us into a discussion of how people are never all good or all bad—we are complicated, and we make mistakes. I smiled proudly

when I heard him return to his table and repeat parts of our conversation. Almost magically, others joined in and added to the conversation. I was proud to see students discussing real life, sparked by an observation.

During a discussion of the book Chrysanthemum, in which a vivacious girl goes to kindergarten, the students noticed that her spirit was broken by others. The obvious lesson was that words can hurt others. This group of students chatted further to speculate why the students were so mean. In the end, the decision was that their meanness came from some type of pain. Pride washed over me as these students were able to see that pain can manifest itself in different ways. Empathy.

Even for the “bad guys.” Wow. A wordless video, Scarlett, about a young girl with a seemingly impossible dream, taught us about resilience. We saw how even the smallest bit of hope can shine a light into the darkness. Students saw this as a call to spread hope and kindness with those who need it.

At times our world overwhelms me, I long to see the beauty which can be hidden amid the pain. But when I focus on my classroom, Room 406, I see grace everywhere. I have an expectation for a better tomorrow. Empathy exists. Neighbor helps neighbor. Kind words are spoken. I am not claiming Nirvana, but I know there is good.

As we remember Dr. King, I wonder what he would think.

Would he see advancements? Would he be pleased? In 1963, Dr, King desired that his “four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Me too, Dr. King.

Love is in the air. Love your body, too! Enjoy making these healthier Valentine’s Day treats with your kids. They are delicious and lower in sugar than most sweets on offer this season.

STRAWBERRY PROTEIN BITES

FRUIT ROLL-UP VALENTINE FORTUNE COOKIES

INGREDIENTS: 1 Cup frozen strawberries 1 Cup oats ½ Cup sunflower seeds ½ Cup coconut flour 1 Tbsp. coconut oil 1 Tbsp. honey or maple syrup to sweeten Desiccated (or shredded) coconut

While this is more of an assembly than a recipe, it’s a healthier option than candy and can be more personal than conversation hearts, as you or your children can personalize each message!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the frozen strawberries, oats, sunflower seeds and coconut flour in a food processor with 1 tablespoon of the coconut oil and blend until it eventually becomes a fine paste.

2. Use a tablespoon to scoop the mixture out, then hand-roll each tablespoon of paste into a ball.

3. Roll the balls in the desiccated or shredded coconut.

4. Pop in the freezer and pull out a few to serve as needed!

INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES: • Box of Fruit Roll-Ups, red color suggested (note that each fruit roll-up makes 4 fortune cookies) • Fine-tip red or pink permanent marker or red ink pen • Parchment paper (plain paper will stick to the fruit roll-up) • 1 2-inch round cookie cutter DIRECTIONS: 1. Cut parchment paper into long strips and write your sweet messages, starting with a heart, to peek out of the fortune cookie.

2. Unroll one fruit roll-up and cut into 4 equal squares.

3. Stack the 2 squares on top of each other and cut through with the cookie cutter.

4. Place a message into the center of one of the circles and fold in half, like a taco, with the heartend of the message peeking out.

5. Grab the corners of the “taco” and pinch, forming a crease in the middle like a fortune cookie shape, until it sticks and stays folded.

VALENTINE STRAWBERRY BANANA SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS: 1 Banana, peeled 1 Cup frozen strawberries ½ Cup coconut milk (or other favorite milk) Chocolate syrup for garnish (optional) Strawberry for garnish (optional) DIRECTIONS: 1. Blend all ingredients (except garnish) in blender until smooth, adding more liquid if needed to turn the blender blades.

2. Garnish with chocolate syrup heart drawn on top and a fresh strawberry in chocolate syrup tucked onto the glass edge, if desired.

10 Random Acts of Kindness You Can Do With Your Kids

this current world climate, where it seems that cruelty can often go unchecked, and true kindness seems harder to find than it should be, we find ourselves struggling as parents. We struggle with how to teach our children about kindness in this crazy world, and while there are many ways we can react to this struggle, let us focus on the most important component. The easiest way to teach our children something is not by explanation, or by lecturing; it is by example and by experience. The best and easiest way to teach our children to be kind is by resonating kindness and engaging in acts of kindness with our children. Below are ten random acts of kindness, some easier than others, that can be accomplished with children.

Deliver positive affirmations to your neighbors.

Think of these as little compliments that you pay to your neighbors, but instead of speaking them you anonymously deliver them. These can be found online, or you can write them out by hand together and decorate them. Even little affirmations such as, “You Are Strong” and, “The Work You Do Matters” can make a world of difference to somebody.

Hold a lemonade stand and donate the proceeds to a charity of their choice.

Get your child’s philanthropic spirit started early and let them chose their own charity to fundraise for. If they are too young to do their own research, pick a few options based on their interests and allow them to choose which one they want to move forward with. Help them market and plan for their stand and then hand-deliver the proceeds afterward.

Donate old clothes and toys together.

This one is a family affair, as we all could use some wardrobe culling on occasion. Discuss the reasons why we donate our old clothes and toys, and how kind it is to give to those who need it.

This will simultaneously empty your clutter and fill your hearts.

Volunteer at a local animal shelter.

Who doesn’t love playing with kittens and puppies?! It is important for animals in shelters to be socialized to help them get adopted into their fur-ever homes. This is also a fantastic way to get the animal cuddle and play time without the responsibility of having a pet.

Make it a habit to give at least one person a compliment every day.

You know that uplifting feeling you get when a stranger compliments your outfit or the like? It feels even better to pass it on. Make it a part of your dinner routine to share what compliments you passed out during the day, with a minimum of one daily.

Bake cookies to deliver to your local fire station or police station.

Everybody loves cookies, so this is a pretty easy one.

Go ahead and make up a batch of your favorite cookies and hand deliver them to your local fire station or police station. It may be a good idea to phone ahead to check for allergies and ask when the best time to deliver is.

Cook and deliver dinner to a friend who could use some help.

Talk with your children about some life changes that can be challenging for people, such as divorce, death of a family member, or addition of a new baby. Then discuss if you have any friends that are going through these (allow them to lead this discussion— children are a lot more attuned to grown-up problems than we generally realize). When you’ve picked a friend, make their favorite dinner and deliver it to them.

Hold a cold-weather accessories drive.

Everybody has old scarves, hats and other cold-weather accessories that they don’t wear. Work together to collect gently used hats, scarves, and other such items to donate to a local clothing closet. This is the time of year that is hardest on the homeless population, and having a hat or scarf can make a huge difference.

Write letters to somebody who made a difference in your lives.

We all have people who have influenced our lives for the better: old teachers, mentors, encouraging friends, etc. Instead of just thinking about how much of a difference they made in our lives, write and mail them a hand-penned letter from the heart.

10. Make and distribute “kindness rocks.”

A new sensation that is sweeping the nation is painting rocks with positive messages and then leaving them in public places for others to find. This has become an enjoyable pastime for many youths, and it’s a fun, creative way to spread kindness within your community.

Reclaiming Family Time:

What to Do When Homework is Too Intrusive

When

looking at decades of research on the topic of homework in elementary school, no overall positive correlation between homework and achievement has been found.

Knowing this often causes parents to wonder why the practice of giving young children homework continues. Often teachers are uninformed and are also following uninformed policy given by the school or the school district. So, what can you, as an informed parent, do to protect your home from the unnecessary homework strains?

First, figure out what you are willing to do. The school is not in control of your home, you are! This is your family, and you deserve quality family time. How much family time are you willing to give up? Is your child having problems with the quality or quantity of the assignments? Are you taking on the role of tutor or can your child complete assignments independently? Thinking through these questions will help you decide what changes need to be made.

It is important to know the school district’s homework policy as well as the individual school’s policy. By being informed about these policies, you can determine if the individual teacher is following the guidelines. If guidelines are not being followed, often a simple discussion with the teacher can get things in line with policy. At most back-to-school nights the teacher will talk about homework policies and expectations. They usually tell parents how they want to be approached in the event a problem should arise. Take them at their word and contact them immediately if homework starts to cause problems.

If you find it is time to have a meeting, ask the teacher to briefly explain expectations for homework and then express your own expectations and what your family can and cannot do. For example, if the teacher says, “The expectation in my class is reading thirty minutes, and completing a math worksheet, so homework shouldn’t take more than an hour.” You may say, “We find our child has a hard time with

math; therefore it takes him/her much longer to complete the worksheet. Could we modify the assignment, so that he/she has less to complete, or set a time limit and after this amount of time, work stops?” The teacher may not be aware of the struggles with homework, so engaging in a conversation may accomplish a lot to improve the situation.

If the teacher is unwilling to work with your situation, it may be time to make the changes necessary for your child yourself. Most of the time teachers want to help, but there are times when you must take unilateral action and cut homework yourself. When taking this step, you must inform the teacher, and at this point let the principal know what is happening. You may write a note stating your appreciation for the meetings you had earlier to discuss the issue, express understanding for the teacher’s position, but make it clear you disagree. Lay out what you are willing and not willing to do for homework. Let the teacher know you are willing to meet again, perhaps in a month, to discuss how the adjusted homework is going. You could also share correspondence with the principal, so that he/she is aware of the homework issue and how you as a parent are trying to remediate the situation.

Making the decision to adjust your child’s homework yourself can be an uncomfortable prospect. But it will prove to be well worth it as you enjoy less stressful evenings. Keep in mind elementary school grades do not impact students in life-altering ways, but the daily struggles with homework may have lasting effects. One of the biggest impacts is that students learn to hate school, and that impact is long lasting and has life-altering consequences. As you engage in battles over homework, your relationship with your child is also impacted negatively. That can also be a long-lasting consequence of allowing homework madness to invade your home. Again, reclaiming family evenings takes some effort, and can be uncomfortable at times, but will surely be well worth it!

You will find that they consistently use small, sustainable farms and provide locally-sourced organic and natural food as much as possible. It is also the place to find handcrafted boutique wines that are made in small batches by “mom and pop” wineries, as well as small-production beers.

In November of 2016, Alan Miller and Caleb Flint became majority partners in Wine Merchants and The Bistro At Wine Merchants. Alan’s passion for providing guests with an unforgettable experience and Caleb’s 20- plus years of experience in the restaurant business make them the perfect match for this collaboration. They both have a passion for freshness and quality that is apparent throughout the restaurant and wine shop. Alan’s wife, Sarah Shoaf, also contributes to the quality of the experience. She makes all of the homemade bread and desserts for The Bistro, including cheesecakes whose flavors change weekly.

The dining experience at The Bistro is top-of-the-line. Chef Justin Pinch is involved in the handcrafted menu every step of the way. He uses his experience, having worked in kitchens all over the world, to develop the cuisine. He also takes care to design ever-changing specials based on what fresh local ingredients are available each day. With the exceptional beer and wine offerings, you can enjoy perfectly paired beverages with your meal.

If you come to The Bistro for a meal, you must wander through the Wine Merchants gourmet wine shop, as well. Manager Michael Croezen spends his days gaining knowledge of boutique wines and maintains the shop’s unique

inventory. Many of the wines you can find here are not available in other retail shops.

There is more to Wine Merchants and The Bistro at Wine Merchants than you might expect. From a dining perspective, you can enjoy lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and even wine-pairing dinners. The wine- pairing events bring you the opportunity to talk about the wines with a knowledgeable representative and also speak with the chef.

If you are interested in learning more about wine, you will thoroughly enjoy the wine tastings and the Wine 101 class that they offer. Wine tastings are the first Monday of every month at 6 pm. You can talk to boutique wine distributors and taste, discuss and then pre-order unique wines at better than retail prices.

Wine 101 is the third Tuesday of the month. This class provides an in-depth, informative class on wine— where it is produced, the main wine growing regions, and other information from a certified sommelier.

INGREDIENTS: FOR THE CRUST: 2 cups super-fine almond flour ¼ cup sugar � teaspoon salt ¼ cup salted butter, softened ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 large egg FOR THE LEMON FILLING: ½ cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice (about 5-6 lemons) 2 teaspoons lemon zest ¾ cup sugar, divided 3 large eggs ¾ cup butter, softened to room temperature FOR THE WHIPPED CREAM: 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Fresh berries for topping (as desired) DIRECTIONS:

Lemon Tart with Almond Flour Crust

BY SARA WILES Whether you have vowed to eat a little healthier in 2019 or live a gluten-free life daily, this tart is the perfect way to indulge without feeling a little guilty. I always find that citrus and fruit sweets are so well-balanced. They are refreshing, yet sweet and rich, without tempting us to be overindulgent. I will gladly take chocolate and caramel any day of the year, but during the winter months when we are typically eating heavier dishes, a nice zippy dessert can be a great alternative to the gingerbread and maple tastes of the previous months.

Be cautious with this recipe and be sure to whisk egg products vigorously, so that they don’t scramble. Top your tart with fresh whipped cream and your favorite fruit, and enjoy!

FOR THE CRUST: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease tart pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the almond flour, sugar, and salt. Stir in the softened butter until it resembles coarse crumbs, and then stir in the vanilla extract and egg. Mix until well-combined.

3. Use your hands to press the dough evenly into the bottom and sides of the pan. The dough will be sticky. Poke a few holes into the dough using a fork.

4. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Place a layer of aluminum foil on top if the edges are browning too fast. Cool before making lemon filling.

FOR THE LEMON FILLING AND ASSEMBLY: 1. In a medium saucepan, heat the lemon juice, lemon zest, a 6 tablespoons of sugar until sugar is dissolved, then bring to a boil. Set aside.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and remaining sugar until smooth and no lumps remain.

3. While whisking egg mixture, slowly pour a quarter of the boiled lemon juice to the egg and whisk vigorously until combined. Whisk fast, or else your egg will cook and curdle. Pour this egg/lemon mixture back into the saucepan with the lemon juice and whisk over medium heat until it is at a boil. Whisk continually or else there will be lumps. While continually whisking, reduce heat and let simmer until it is thickened like a sauce.

4. Fill a large bowl with ice water and set saucepan into the ice bath until it cools for about 3 minutes, or until it is warm, but not hot. Remove from ice bath and add the softened butter in 5 increments, stirring with a rubber spatula until it is completely smooth, and butter is thoroughly combined.

Pour through a fine mesh strainer to remove any lumps.

5. Pour lemon filling into the baked tart shell and refrigerate overnight, or until cooled and set. Spread whipped cream over the tart once chilled and garnish with fresh berries and a sprig of mint.
