Love

is a powerful thing. It starts early in life and it makes us do crazy things. I recall my youngest daughter being smitten with a young boy at her preschool. So much so, that she would only wear dresses to school for a while in the dead of winter because Hunter said she looked pretty in them. He in turn had his mom get a vanilla birthday cake because Morgan didn’t like chocolate, even though that was his favorite flavor. And of course, there’s nothing to compare to the love we feel the minute we become parents.

The love we feel for our children brings us to a whole new level! February is synonymous with love so I’ll leave you with one of my favorite Bible verses from 1 Corinthians 13:1-4. “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”

We continue with our second installment of the prom guide and have a wonderful article on the upcoming Triad Home and Garden show. Spring is just around the corner and is a great time to start planning for those spring projects and renovation.

Second Harvest Food Bank on a Mission to Provide Healthy Food for Families

all know becoming a parent changes everything. It changes the pace of the world around us; it changes what we feel is important. We change ourselves, as well. We learn to value the small things and simple milestones: first steps, first words, first days of school. We learn to value weekends. We learn to value sleep. We learn to value food.

As parents, we learn that the meals we serve our children are the embodiment of our everyday love for them. We make sure their breakfasts are packed with protein, their packed lunches include fresh fruit, and their dinners represent all the food groups, colors and textures.

We also make sure they drink their milk.

Parents want to make the best choices for their children and know that what they feed them will help determine their development, and thus their future. We know that not all parents in Northwest North Carolina can afford to do the same.

In fact, 1 in 4 children across the 18 counties that Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina serves is food-insecure, meaning that their families lack reliable access to affordable, nutritious food.

This is why for 35 years Second Harvest and its partner network have been helping get food to dinner tables from Boone to Burlington and everywhere in between.

However, food insecurity is not simply about the lack of food. It is also frequently about the lack of quality, wholesome and nutritious food.

As working families try to cover basic needs, such as housing, healthcare, utilities, transportation and childcare, they increasingly find that less and less of their income can be used to purchase food. According to the Brookings Institution, low-income families are spending more than 80% of their income to cover their most basic needs—a dramatic rise from 30 years ago. To provide enough meals, these families are often left with no choice but to choose quantity over nutritional concerns. The consequences of this are evident in higher rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease among food-insecure families.

Just as you do with your family, Second Harvest’s goal is to provide more than just calories. Second Harvest is encouraging the community to donate healthy food and continues to focus on providing greater access to fresh, nutritionally dense foods for community members in need.

Additionally, the nonprofit offers cooking classes, food tastings, recipes, grocery store tours and helps food-insecure families access nutrition programs that can help families stretch tight budgets to incorporate as many healthy meals as possible.

Food—healthy food—is essential to children’s growth and development.

Teachers tell us and studies show us that what our children eat impacts their grades, attendance, behavior and success in school. In other words, every bite of food a child eats—or doesn’t eat—helps to determine their future.

Every parent reading this wants to be able to feed and care for their children well—some of us can and do, and some of us cannot always do so. But something else that parenting teaches us is about the value of

giving and caring for one another—and perhaps this is why there are so many parents who give to, volunteer and work at Second Harvest. We know that providing the most basic head start in terms of proper nutrition to our children should be put within reach of all of us.

Foster Care Programs

Currently,

in North Carolina, there are more than 10,000 children in foster care. Within the last five years, there has been a 25-percent increase in the number of children needing foster care in North Carolina. While historically, Crossnore School & Children’s Home in WinstonSalem has cared for teenagers and older youth in foster care, the recent opioid epidemic has resulted in an increased need to foster younger children in the past two years.

Sandy Sauer, Crossnore School & Children’s Home’s Director of Foster Care and Adoptions, shared that foster care can be provided in two different venues at their agency: Community and Residential Foster Care.

The Community Foster Care Program features: •C hildren ages 0-21 live in private homes with trained foster parents. At present, there are 34 licensed homes with the Winston-Salem campus.

•T here are 14 homes being licensed at the Avery campus.

•T here will be a program at the Hendersonville campus in the near future.

• Therapeutic Care, Family/Traditional Care, Respite Care and Foster to Adopt Services are provided through Community Foster Care.

The Residential Foster Care Program features: • On-campus living in six cottages on the Winston campus.

• Two sets of professional cottage parents who care for the children on a rotating basis 24/7 to provide consistency in care.

• Permission for sibling groups to stay together.

• On-campus living in 14 cottages on the Avery campus.

Children are placed in foster care when they are not able to be safe in their homes. Licensed foster homes in the community and cottages on the Crossnore campus provide for the needs of these children, including their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs, until they can safely return to their families.

Fostering is different than parenting, with unique challenges and also great rewards. It takes a special family to support a child in their healing and growth, but these special families come in all shapes and sizes and from all backgrounds. Yours might be one of them.

s (1001 Reynolda Road). The training program lasts eleven weeks, with classes twice a week for three hours each session. Training includes coverage on foster parenting skills, therapeutic foster parenting, and crisis prevention.

How does someone become a foster parent?

“There is a misconception that foster parents must be a married couple,” Sandy explained, “however, that is not the case.

Anyone (single or married), 21 years of age or over and in good health can apply to be a foster parent. Stability, a desire to help children, compassion, empathy, a willingness to learn, and the ability to be flexible are important traits for a foster parent.” The application and background-check procedures are reviewed as part of the general interest process. Kelly Riley, Licensing Specialist/Foster Care Trainer, verified that 15 foster parents are currently in the training process. Kelly conducts classes for potential foster parents three times per year; the next scheduled class begins on May 17th at the Crossnore campus

“People tend to think that someone else will step up and become a foster parent,” Sandy declared. “Take a chance. If we don’t help the children, who will? We need to break the cycle of trauma for them and help them find a place of hope and healing. Every child deserves a family,” Kelly maintained.

“It is moving to see the light in children’s eyes after some time in a healing environment. Meeting a child on the worst day of their life and then seeing them begin to heal is remarkable.”

Lady of Mercy Catholic School (OLM) has been educating students of all faiths from K through 8th Grade since 1957. The Preschool opened its doors in 2006. From its humble beginnings to its current home, conveniently and centrally located in Winston Salem, OLM is proud to be celebrating 60 years of rich tradition, coupled with academic excellence based on strong faith and core values.

When the school first opened its doors on September 3rd, 1957, there were 130 students enrolled. Through the years, students have enrolled and were graduated, but one thing remained— excellent education in an environment of faith and respect, created through the dedication of the Sisters and lay people to whom students were entrusted.

Today, OLM continues to focus on small class sizes and developing and honoring each student spiritually and intellectually. OLM’s experienced educators share their love of learning, examples of faith, and expectations of excellence to their students every day. Each child in its diverse student body is invited to live and serve in a changing society as a respectful and responsible citizen.

Even though OLM has grown to be a formidable educational facility, nationally recognized as a BlueRibbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, it is still somewhat of a “hidden gem.”

Having moved into the former Bishop McGuinness High School building in 2002, OLM boasts high-school-level amenities and an excellent environment for elementary and middle school students. In addition, the Pre-K program is the only fully licensed 5-Star Catholic preschool in the Triad.

Surviving Overdose Loss Sanely Through Unity and Support

reviewing current headlines or turning on the nightly local or national news validates the need for this relatively new grief support group known as SOLSTUS. For instance, in 2015 there were 53 deaths due to drug overdoses in Forsyth County; in 2005, there were 13. In Yadkin County, there were five deaths attributed to drug overdoses in 2015, the same as in 2005.

In Stokes County, there were 13 drugrelated deaths; two were reported in 2005.

Overall, there has been a 73- percent increase in drug-related deaths in North Carolina since 2005.

These statistics are sobering proof of the need not only to address the drug problem as a whole, but also to help those who grieve for loved ones lost to drug addiction.

The first support group began meeting in October of 2017 in Forsyth and Stokes Counties with plans to offer similar programs in all 17 counties supported

by Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care. Selene Teague, BSW, Outreach Provider Representative for Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care, acts as a co-facilitator along with Kim WagnerEvans in the group sessions. Partnering to offer SOLSTUS along with Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care are ARCA (Addiction Recovery Care Association, a residential drug and alcohol treatment center), the Mental Health Association in Forsyth County, and Cardinal Innovations.

Selene shared, “Greensboro Hospice & Palliative Care has a similar program. We spoke with their counselors and found that families describe that program as a lifesaver. From personal experience, I 22 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

understand the loss families and friends go through, as well as the stigma associated with death due to an overdose.”

Becoming part of a group session may be unfamiliar to many. Selene explains what a typical session entails; “It’s an opportunity to talk about loss in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Groups are generally around ten people at varying levels in the grief process. There is a registration process in place to confirm whether participation would be beneficial prior to joining the group.”

Individual grief counseling is also available through Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.

What is a SOLSTUS session?

• The group is open to anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one to an overdose death, regardless of their relationship to the deceased.

•A ll discussions are judgment-free with open dialogue encouraged.

•E ach session begins with a review of the SOLSTUS support group guidelines.

•P articipants are a mix of couples and individuals at a variety of grief levels.

•F acilitators often provide resource information and/or suggestions on coping tools to utilize between sessions. A booklet, Surviving the Grief of an Overdose Death, is offered to new participants.

• I nteraction outside the group is on a strictly voluntary basis.

• SOLSTUS meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month in Forsyth County and the fourth Thursday in Stokes County with each session lasting 1½ hours.

• New participants complete a short registration form.

• The group sessions adhere to HIPPA regulations. All discussions are considered confidential and are not to be discussed outside the parameters of the meetings.

• Although the facilitators have a planned topic/agenda for each meeting, the sessions are an open forum format and participants often take the lead in discussions.

of the cold, blustery winter season? Shake off the winter blues and take a step into spring at the 29th Annual Triad Home and Garden Show. This event, hosted by the Home Builders’ Association of Winston-Salem (HBAWS) and sponsored by Bloomday Granite & Marble, is the perfect way to get excited about sprucing up your home for spring, and seeing the new, innovative ways to update around your lawn and home. “The Triad Home and Garden Show is an event that provides awareness in the community of the professionals in our industry and showcases their products and services,” explained Beverly Hayes, HBAWS’s Director of Communications & Member Services.

The show will be held on Friday through Sunday (February 23rd, 24th, 25th) at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds in the Education Building. The doors open at 2:00 pm on Friday.

The hours vary by day as follows: Friday, 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm; Saturday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; and Sunday, noon to 4:00 pm.

Tickets are $8.00 per adult, with children ages 12 and under free when accompanied by a paying adult. Enter gate 5 off Deacon Blvd. for free, handicap accessible parking. It’s just a short walk to the Education Building.

Over 100 vendors are expected for the 2018 Show. Thinking about a new garden space this year? Living Waterscapes, Woodsen Landscaping, Southern Sodgrass and Landscape Supply, and As You Like It Landscapes will be showcasing their beautiful garden concepts. Stop by and get inspired!

Demonstrations of techniques continue as a highlight of the 2018 Triad Home and Garden Show. The 2018 Learning Stop will feature daily home maintenance classes by Erik Anderson from Dreammaker Bath & Kitchen.

To highlight the shortage and increasing need for skilled workers in the construction industry, students from FTCC Carpentry Program and WSFCS Career Center Carpentry Classes will conduct a skills demonstration on Friday, February 23rd, before the show opens. Students and HBAWS members will join to build items to be sold at the Show. Funds raised from the sale of these items will benefit the Career Technical

Education partnership, providing students who participate in these programs an opportunity to help construct a Habitat Home annually. Tent Sponsor for this area is Busch Insurance and Builders Mutual Insurance.

OUT & ABOUT in Winston-Salem with Southern Home & Kitchen Eat for a Cause

Saturday, January 13th, Southern Home & Kitchen (SoHo) hosted a unique cooking event with RISE (Refugee and Immigrant Society of Entrepreneurs) and the YMCA’s ESL programs. This was the first in a series called “Eat with a Cause.”

The evening was a memorable one, where Ethiopian Chefs Sena Duhna and Adut Ojulu prepared a meal and shared their stories and experiences with others.

As most of us discover early on—the dinner table is a safe and secure place that lends itself for conversation and learning. The cooking classes are intended to bridge cultures over the universal language of food. “Eat for a Cause” is a way of connecting and supporting under-served women in our community.

SoHo learned that the YMCA was helping refugee women in their entrepreneurial program to raise funds by teaching cooking classes in church kitchens. They instantly felt connected and drawn to this cause and knew that a collaboration was imminent. They sponsored this series so different women from diverse countries will have the opportunity to come and teach classes in their kitchen. All of the proceeds for the class will be used to help the women who lead the cooking class.

With the assistance of a translator, Sena and Adut articulated their personal stories and journeys, their culture, and their food. They did most of the cooking, although participants were more than welcome to assist and interact in preparing the meal all together.

3 MONTHS BEFORE q Start pulling inspiration for your prom style of choice.

is a memorable time in a teenager’s life. This night to remember is full of glamour and glitz. Unfortunately, it is also full of expenses. To make sure every young lady has a special prom night, there have been people, such as Jada Paul, who have stepped in to help. For the past four years, Paul has been assisting female high school students in Winston-Salem find their perfect prom look.

The idea for Jada Paul’s Prom Dress Giveaway, which is part of the Chris Paul Family Foundation, originated from Paul’s own prom experience during her senior year of high school. Along with events in Forsyth County, the Prom Dress Giveaway has been held in Los Angeles, and plans are in the works for an event in Houston this year. However, Paul will always hold a special place in her heart for the giveaways in Forsyth County.

“Forsyth County is home and there is nothing more rewarding than working in the community that our family will always call home. The cost has become prohibitive for a number of families. Our family wanted to give some young ladies not only the opportunity to select a dress, shoes, and jewelry, but also to share that experience with their moms,” explained Paul.

The Prom Dress Giveaway is an afternoon-long event for young ladies and their moms to enjoy. Festivities include a fashion show, makeup artists and hair stylists sharing tips, and guest speakers. Paul also stated there are giveaways for limo rides to prom, tuxedos for their dates, makeovers, and pre-prom dinners.

Lastly, the young ladies will leave with their gown, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories, all selected by themselves.

“The greatest thing about hosting the event is meeting the girls and sharing in their excitement. When a young lady and her mom come over to thank me and tell me that without this event, she would not be able to go to prom, it just warms my heart. The smiles stay with me from year to year,” reflected Paul.

According to Paul, the gowns are graciously donated from different vendors, and the girls are selected to attend by various community organizations in Forsyth County.

“One of the things we think is important for the girls to know is that their community came together to make this a special afternoon for them. There are a number of companies that support us each year and we are blessed to be able to share this very special time with these young ladies,” Paul commented.

Details are still being confirmed for this year’s special Prom Dress Giveaway. One thing is for sure, though—many girls in the community will be given memories that will stay with them for a long time.

“I want people to know that this evening is an important night for young ladies and their escorts. Prom is one of the highlights of [your] senior year and the positive memories created in your graduation year will live with you for a lifetime. Our plan is to continue doing the event and hope that each year, we are able to invite more young ladies and their moms to attend,” maintained Paul.

Creative Ideas for “Prom-posals”

it comes to life as a high school student, there is no night bigger than the prom. It is the night high school memories are made of. From finding the perfect dress, to scheduling beauty treatments, to coordinating the evening with close friends, details are key.

Yet, with most attention going towards prom attire, often- times the proposal itself, unfortunately, is forgotten.

Hide your question in a latte. Use your need for a caffeine fix as a way to ask your date. Using a sharpie, write down your proposal on the bottom of your coffee cup. Keep it short and simple with just, “Prom?” When you’re finishing, make sure to hold your cup up to your mouth high enough for your date to read what you’re asking. Get ready for a laugh and a yes!

The method of asking someone to the prom should be just as critically executed as the prom dress or tuxedo chosen.

Remember, this is a monumental night!

With the 2018 prom season quickly approaching, it is vital to begin devising a few unique methods for asking that special someone to the prom. Don’t wait until the last minute to begin thinking of a way, begin brainstorming today.

Nervous about where to start? Have no fear, Forsyth Family has a steady supply of “prom-posals” fit for prom king or queen!

Stuff her locker & win his/her heart.

This is an “oldie but goodie.” Sneak into your future prom date’s locker by asking a friend for his or her combination.

Afterwards, place balloons, candy, stuffed animals, etc. in it with a sign asking your date out. You’re sure to witness a smile and a positive answer once they open up their locker.

Drive-by request. Decorate the street leading up to your date’s house with lawn signs asking him/her to the prom.

Their name would be on one small sign, followed by “will,” followed by “you,” followed by “go,” followed by “to,” followed by “the,” followed by “prom,” followed by “with,” followed by “me?”

Yes, you may need to spend a significant amount of time making the small signs, but think about the reaction they will each receive as their target drives by. Lawn signs are the easy way to ask without even having to be there!

Wish for good fortune! Another creative way to ask would be to order personalized fortune cookies asking your date to the prom. Several websites offer these services for fairly low prices. You could add humor to this with a witty pickup line such as: “I predict an exceptional prom date with ___(insert your name)____ in your future!” Take your date to grab Chinese take-out, and have your waitress bring this personalized fortune to your table. Get ready for a “Yes!”

Cover song to the rescue! Re-write the lyrics to your future date’s favorite song, with your own words asking your date to the prom. While this maneuver may take time and patience, the outcome will be worth it. Try amplifying the effect by playing the song at a key moment in the day, and performing the song in front of him/her.

Cheesy but worth it. Who doesn’t love a great pizza for an afternoon study session. Make your pizza do the dirty work by having the pepperoni spell out “Prom?” for your date. Order this through any major chain pizza restaurant early, just make sure to tell them the “special request.” Be ready for a big smile when they open the box for their first slice.

Ask “It” for some help. For those dates who love scary movies, channel “Pennywise,” the terrifying clown from the hit movie, It. In the movie, he often sends his future victims red balloons. This time, hide your note inside the balloon, then send this to him/her with the simple request stating that they need to “POP” the balloon for a special request. This move is sure to win the heart of a die-hard scary movie fan!

going to prom, there are a lot of components to consider: the dress, the suit, the restaurant, the flowers, the after-party; but one thing that everyone participates in before attending prom is the photo shoot. As evidenced by the yearly social media blitz, prom couples and groups take prom photos pretty seriously. From a quick photo outside before hopping into the limo, to an extensive shoot with multiple backgrounds and props, prom photos are considered a must. To relieve the stress of this added component, below is some advice, offered by professional photographer Melinda Lamm. She advises amateur prom photographers and subjects on ideal photos, describing the setting, timing, and poses necessary for a satisfactory photo shoot.

Setting: Melinda says a prom photo setting always, “Depends on the couple. A couple that favors the country probably would not be as comfortable shooting downtown.” Any number of venues will do, from gardens to beach shores—it all depends on the subjects’ taste. Melinda also notes that a lot depends on the dress. You need to keep in mind that the setting should not clash with the style of the dress. For instance, if the dress is colorful, it may look odd to shoot pictures in front of wall art with conflicting colors and designs. So before you pick the location, pick the dress. Melinda forewarns photographers to choose a modest backdrop, “The background should never be the main focus of the photo; the subjects should be.”

Timing: If you are doing outdoor photography, as most do, Melinda suggests avoiding midday.

“Early light and evening light are ideal for outdoor pictures.” Most prom-goers take photos directly after getting ready and before the pre-prom dinner. This schedule is a no-brainer; however, if circumstances dictate a midday shoot, try to find a venue with even lighting. “Being in complete shade with a flash on the camera would be better than shooting in the sun at noon.” Elegant indoor shots with an antique couch or chair may be better options than trying to get good lighting in the glare of a noonday sun.

Poses: Choosing poses can be awkward or cliché; however, Melinda gives some advice that may make things run more smoothly. “Shoot the couple or group with the things they love. This can be horses, cars, etc.” Doing this will make the subjects more at ease with themselves. “Do the standard poses for the grandparents, then you can move on to more interesting shots.

I try to do a few classic poses, then do more candid photos.” She continues, “Once the couple (or group) feels relaxed, you get more honest smiles, not forced.” She proposes going onto Pinterest and drawing on ideas there before the photo shoot begins; this will take some stress from not only the couple, but also the photographer.

With all of this advice in mind, try and have a good time with the photos; stressing out about the perfect shot will sour the evening.

The photos are the start of what should be an enjoyable night, celebrating high school and the friends and memories you have made there.

Yesterday’s idea of “riding off into the sunset years” of life just doesn’t apply to people today. While the health and economic challenges of aging continue to be concerns, a growing number of today’s older adults are redefining their experience. No longer are seniors spending their time idly; some are starting new companies, working with non-profits, traveling the world and mentoring youth in their communities.

They are seeking a continuation of engagement in life and to live with purpose. Seniors expect their communities to support their changing needs, as well as recognize their abilities and contributions to the greater good of society.

With the gift of a longer life, older adults are seeing new opportunities to pursue work, education, civic and social involvement. Our older population wants access to amenities that ease the challenges of aging and enhance the quality of life for themselves and their loved ones. To achieve these goals, where we live has never been more important.

With the aforementioned in mind, the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging recently announced the 2017 Best Cities for Successful Aging report and index, evaluating how well the US metropolitan areas serve the needs and meet the expectations of the nation’s largest-ever population of mature adults, enabling them to age productively, securely and in optimal health.

Recently, Winston-Salem became a city more focused on helping seniors to have productive lives when Mayor Allen Joines signed the Mayor’s Pledge and joined the “Best Cities for Successful Aging” movement to make our city a place for purposeful, healthy aging, creating an inviting environment for seniors. Partnering with the leadership of Winston-Salem is Home Instead Senior Care.

Shannon Hodge, franchise owner of Home Instead Senior Care, explained, “Our company was developed with a passionate desire to provide trusted in-home care for seniors. It’s a simple idea, but one that is becoming more important as people are living longer and as the baby-boomer generation ages. Our senior population has so much to offer to each of us and we really need to make Winston-Salem a great place for them to visit and to call ‘home’,” he acknowledged. the years, Valentine’s Day has risen beyond a gift for just the love of your life. Many folks share the day, not only with their significant other, but also with their families, treasured friends and even co-workers.

So, the pressure is on. What are the perfect Valentine’s Day presents? Flowers, candy, jewelry and an evening out are among the top ten gifts. Those are all fantastic offerings.

But, as the feelings of love come in many forms, so do the best ways to grasp and package it. Putting together a themed gift basket is a fun and creative task to focus all those warm, fuzzy feelings onto the people who mean the most to you.

First, figure out a theme that connects with the recipient of your thoughtful love. Second, jot down ideas of things that fit the theme as well as into a basket. Make sure at least one of the items is practical—something your loved one can actually use. Then, package your goodies in a creative way.

Take this one a step further and hide extra quotes or silly poems in random places for your loved one to find—in lunchboxes, in the middle of books they may be reading, in pocketbooks or briefcases, pants pockets, drawers, behind picture frames.... These words of wisdom will be popping up for years to come.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Day December 20, 2017

ayor Allen Joines declared December 20, 2017 Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Day in a news conference hosted by Smart Start of Forsyth County, Inc., the administrator/implementer of the program across North Carolina. Matt Britt, CEO/Board of Directors for Smart Start of Forsyth County, Inc. spoke and introduced the guest speakers including Councilwoman Denise Adams who shared the proclamation from Mayor Joines, Representative Ed Hanes, Senator Joyce Krawiec, and Commissioner Don Martin. Senator Krawiec commented about her favorite childhood book and the memories that books brought to her.

Representative Hanes shared that “reading leads to understanding.” Commissioner Martin spoke of a “print rich environment” and investing in our children. Matt Britt explained that daily reading is critical to improving overall literacy.

Unique to this news conference were the children in a reading circle with their teacher enjoying story time. Their rapt attention, oblivious to people entering and taking their seats, clearly illustrated how enthralling books are to the target age group of the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL).

They were asking if they could hold a book, interacting with their teacher, and answering questions about the stories that were being read. It was easy to imagine what their excitement level would be when they started getting books mailed to them from DPIL. Developing life-long readers one book at a time, one child at a time – what an opportunity!

With this launch, Winston-Salem and Forsyth County children from birth to age five who are signed up in the DPIL will receive every month, free, an ageappropriate book mailed directly to them

at their homes. “DPIL works in conjunction with educational and literary experts to select specific, high quality books based on a child’s age and the family’s language of choice. (Smart Start of Forsyth County, Inc. Press Release dated 12.19.17)” Sign-up began immediately and based on information shared at the news conference, approximately 1,700 children had already enrolled.

Presently, there are 24,000 eligible children in Forsyth County. The age range (birth to age five) is the only requirement for eligibility. Children can be signed up on-line in a userfriendly format. Once enrolled, books are expected to start arriving at the home addresses in about six to eight weeks. In addition to the book, there will be tips for parents as they interact and read to their children, helping them to develop a love of reading.

According to the Smart Start of Forsyth County, Inc. Press Release dated 12.19.17, Dolly Parton began her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children of her home county in Tennessee. “She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. She wanted to ensure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.” DPIL expanded over time and now provides books to children throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

of January 1st, 2018, Kaleideum has joined Museums for All, a signature access program of the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that encourages families of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum habits.

The Heart of Mom in Counseling

The

family in traditional society has been comprised of a husband, wife, and child or children. Mom and wife provide the heart of the father and husband, and children provide the heart of the mother. In today’s more heterogeneous societies, this mix may vary due to adoptions, foster care, marriage, and non-marital bonds that emerge from homosexual and transgender relationships.

But over the last 28 years of counseling, my interactions have been primarily with the mother and her children. At times the father of the child was involved, but most of the time he was not. Hence, the primary family core was mother and child.

Mothers demonstrate by nature heart and passion for their child. Mother also conveys heart and passion for either her husband or the father of her child. Mother’s heart, in reality, conveys the life and bond of the family.

Mother bore her child in her womb for nine months, and in birthing, felt great pain emerging from her being and that of her child. In conceiving and carrying her child, she experienced the baby’s growth, movements, and messages from the forming heart of the child to her heart.

In counseling with her and her child, I have learned that mom knows her child even more than the child knows him- or herself. No matter the age of the child, whether 7 or 17, she knows the heart and mind of her child. Interestingly, I am very fond of the way African-American mothers refer to their sons and daughters, even if 17 or older, as their “baby.”

The power of that metaphor conveys nurturing love and caring, the depth of understanding for the message of the child, and the unique and intricate personality of the child. Regarding the first two ideas, mom holds her child next to her heart and much of the time nourishes his or her very being from her breasts. Through her breasts flow not only physical nourishment but also the intimate exchange of edifying messages of spirit and mind. In mom’s embrace, the art of her child’s personality is shaped.

In essence, the personality of the child is a work of art first inscribed by mom. As unique and complete as the different fingerprints and brain maps of different people, so is her child’s personality. She is the artist and her child the work of art. As the artist knows his work, she alone knows hers.

This dawned on me, much later in my life, despite my years of work with mom(s), children, and families—this even despite all of my schooling and education. Such wisdom, I believe, comes not merely from books and even interactive experience. Rather, it comes from the heart.

As a counselor, I have developed, and am still developing, not only a truly professional love for my child clients, but I also see myself cultivating a heart for my maternal clients.

As a counselor, I see the high value of letting mother guide me in working with her child. In this way, I affirm her wisdom and touch the heart of her child. In all, I see the wisdom in valuing the heart of mother specifically, and that of women in general.

you’re giving yourself a 28-day challenge or just looking for creative ways to celebrate Black History Month, here are some ideas: 1. Listen to legendary black artists. Billie Holiday, James Brown, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston are not only some of music’s biggest names, they made music history by being amazing anomalies. Their songs also send out valuable, timeless messages.

2. Go to a local Black History Celebration. See if there is a local Black History event in your town. Are there any local black theatre events going on?

3. Black History flashcards! Whether you are playing these as a game or just for a quick educational read, black history flash cards serve as a tool for gaining valuable knowledge about famous black people, events, and symbols.

4. Watch some historical black films. Here are some great films to focus on: Selma, Malcolm X, and 13th on Netflix.

5. Consider your interests and passions. Is there a black historical figure that you can relate to? Try reading up on them! For example, if you’re into politics, there’s Angela Davis, who is a political activist.

6. Post historical profiles on social media.

Spread the knowledge! If you feel led, share a photo of a black historical figure and caption it with some of their greatest accomplishments and a moving quote. You can do this as a daily challenge!

7. Post famous inventions and discoveries by black people on social media.

8. Read some black literature! Try a black history reading challenge. Immerse yourself in some classics written by W.E.B DuBois, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, and Zora Neale Hurston. They all can capture black history in a storytelling form.

9. Try some peanut butter recipes! Honor George Washington Carver’s groundbreaking production of peanut butter with some foods containing it, such as peanut butter cookies and bars—or you can even make homemade peanut butter yourself!

10. Find a black history museum. Or a local museum that honors Black History Month.

Make a grand visit to the National Museum of African-American History in Washington, D.C.!

This museum gives a thorough walk through the timeline of Black History.

12. Learn about the history of hip-hop music.

13. Read a poem every day by a famous black poet. Langston Hughes, Rita Dove, and Maya Angelou are phenomenal poets to start with.

14. Eat some soul food! Fried chicken, collard greens, yams, biscuits and gravy are only some of the great taste that soul food offers.

Soul food was originated in the South and has an enlightening history connected to slavery, but is celebrated as a means of survival and solidarity.

15. Support a black-owned business, whether it’s a café, magazine, or a restaurant!

16. Support black creativity. There are so many black musicians, artists, dancers, and writers who are expressing their voices in unique ways. Supporting them now can create even more history for the future!

17. Support black non-profits. The NAACP, Black Girls Code, Black Alliance for Just Immigration, and Incite!: Women of Color Against Violence are some uplifting black non-profits.

18. Support a new black author.

19. Eat some sweet potato biscuits. These are known to be a soul food favorite.

20. Learn more about Tuskegee University.

21. Watch The Butler.

22. Study black art.

23. Stay aware of the black history that is still being made today! There are students, musicians, actors, educators, and other ambitious souls that are still overcoming odds and making history in our time.

24. Watch or read Hidden Figures. This film captures three hidden gems in history who have left their distinctive mark on NASA.

of Black History 25. Read a slave narrative. Warning: these can be highly detailed and graphic. But slave narratives offer a rich, first-person perspective of what it’s like to be enslaved.

26. Read about Mae Jemison, the first black woman to travel in space.

27. Listen to some jazz and learn some history behind it.

28. Cherish black history all year round!

There are so many hidden black gems and so much history that are overlooked and not included in the books. It’ll take more than one month to really drink in all the good stuff.

So, let’s continue to learn!

Girl Empowerment

the moment parents gaze upon their daughter’s newborn face, the words “my beautiful girl” are uttered. From infancy to independence, young girls are empowered to attempt new challenges, make mistakes, view the world without hesitancy, all the while feeling confident. Their accomplishments are defined in terms of verbal praise, such as “smart cookie,” “good girl” or simply, as “amazing!” Their first challenge comes in meeting new friends and practicing the art of friendship, learning about personal strengths and weaknesses, and in the feeling of disappointment, abandonment, or failure that comes naturally with the games of childhood.

If the child begins kicking the floor with a lowered head, moms and dads arrive to save the day with a pep talk, boosting both self-esteem and feelings. While praise is a form of support, this feeling of empowerment needs to come from within and be believed. The day always comes when they must stand tall and say the mantra in their own minds.

Open and Honest Conversations As women and mothers, we are given a chance to teach our daughters lessons and knowledge from our own experiences. The times are strikingly different, however. In this technologically advanced world, where any answer is just a search-engine search away, topics can no longer be viewed as taboo, only openly discussed without hesitation or worry. If not in your safety and confidence, she’ll seek a response from another source. And, how reliable could that source be?

TIP: C onversations do not have to wait until she is ready to ask, you can start the dialogue. Daughters need the chance to discuss their feelings and thoughts concerning beauty and self-image, sexuality and sex, and relationships. This is one means to empower their understanding and decisions. Dads, too, can always have their little girl sit down and share the good news with the bad.

She’ll need you both in those bad, uncertain days. The best part is, the love and honesty can continue!

Who Am I? We live in a society where the ideal image is defined and measured in popularity.

The culture of beauty and judgment has taught girls to criticize their own bodies or to behave in ways that make them feel shocked or uncomfortable. “Who am I?” is a wonderful question that cannot be fully reflected in a mirror. Beauty and self-image come from knowing your inner strength lies in special gifts and talents, intelligence, and a personal beauty. It is discovering that change means growth, not stepping out of who each of us is. It is a difficult lesson, but girls can stand strong and remain true to themselves, too! Jen Paugh writes, “When my daughter was younger, I constantly told her she could do it all. Now, that she’s a teen, I point out when women are put down or held back just because they are female. We discuss why it happens, and how to work around it. Now, when she’s told she can’t because she is a girl, she can recognize the double standard, shrug her shoulders, and say, ‘Watch me!’”

Girls and Friendship In a safe place, among family, daughters become empowered from the love, encouragement, and support they receive. Family support is one attribute which largely impacts the feelings with which our daughters label themselves. She may say, “I am smart” or “With practice, I keep improving.” Do our daughters feel the same strength, support, and love from their closest friends? Defining the strengths in friendships can aid girls in setting their own boundaries to maintain, or find the relationships in which they need to grow.

Extracurricular Activities No matter what our age, each of us has a unique gift or talent. In the right element, engaging in one’s passion has its own feeling of empowerment, but what about trying something new?

Learning occurs when mistakes are made, new friendships are formed, and a girl’s self-confidence can grow by leaps and bounds by learning and gaining new skills. It proves another credo, “I am capable of anything!”

Soaring To New Heights with John Yowell Academy

For

more than 35 years, The Piedmont School has served a special niche of students in the heart of the Triad. These students are bright, with average to above-average cognitive abilities, and struggle with either attention deficits or language-based learning differences, such as dyslexia. Over those past three decades, The Piedmont School has grown and evolved into a truly unique environment that now serves nearly 100 students in Kindergarten through the 12th grade.

In the last five years, The Piedmont School has more than tripled its enrollment and has added a much-needed high school program to its offerings. In the school’s infancy, it primarily served as a transitional program where students may have attended for a few years to gain strategies they needed to be successful academically before transitioning back to area home schools. Now, The Piedmont School serves as more of a destination school. With the addition of a robust arts education program and athletics, many students are finding everything they need at TPS and don’t feel the need to transition anywhere else. Instead, they are choosing to complete their high school careers here as well.

Last year the newly added high school program was officially renamed John Yowell Academy at The Piedmont School in memory of longtime school supporter and advocate John Yowell. JYA has blossomed over the last four years, growing in numbers each year. While JYA is a division of The Piedmont School, it does serve as its own unique program. John Yowell Academy offers an individualized high school education to students who meet The Piedmont School profile (average

to above cognitive abilities with attention deficit or language-based learning difference diagnosis). JYA students are required to meet all of the same course requirements as other area high school students and receive the same standard high school diploma as they would in any other high school. The program offers face-to-face classes with a 1:8 teacher-to-student ratio. JYA also offers several online options for elective courses, which provide a great deal of variety for students and in special situations options for credit recovery or advanced placement coursework. The John Yowell Academy places an emphasis on creating a wellbalanced student. While academic expectations are high, value is also placed on service learning. Students are expected to complete all high school graduation requirements while also completing a number of service hours—both in school and in the community— as a part of their requirements. JYA students work individually with the school counselor to set academic and personal goals each year and to receive guidance on their post-high school path, be it toward a four-year university, community college, or the workforce. The JYA team works with students to learn and explore what it is they want to do and helps provide the stepping-stones and guidance for getting them there.

As of Fall 2017, The Piedmont School has also become an approved testing site for the SAT and ACT. This allows for JYA students to be able to take these college admissions exams in their home school while also being provided the accommodations outlined in their individual instruction plans. In addition to a complete high school curriculum, JYA adds several extracurricular opportunities for students, and is looking to add athletics beginning Spring of 2018.

With the growth of The Piedmont School and addition of John Yowell Academy, the school has seen a great need for an expansion of the campus. The school is currently in the middle of a capital campaign to make this dream a reality. The school, located on a beautiful piece of property in North High Point that is easily accessible from anywhere in the Triad, will maintain its current residence and expand the present site. The expansion plan will nearly triple the size of the current campus and primarily be geared for the growth of the Upper Division (7th-12th grades).

With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 34-year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers to every column I write. Top Ten Tips for Nurturing Children’s Imagination:

Creativity and thinking outside the box begin in the realm of imagination. Educational experts validate what parents, grandparents, and teachers have known all along—offering children opportunities to play with blocks, cardboard boxes, rocks, and stuffed animals provides a rich context for exploring the world. What child can resist concocting magical potions from dirt, water, and a few dried leaves, or crafting whimsical, flying beasts from colorful play dough? Not only does imagination foster cognitive and social-emotional development, but the planning, questioning, experimenting, and problem-solving that accompany these creative endeavors are the very skills children will need to enter the workplace of the future successfully.

THE FANTASTIC FLYING BOOKS OF MR. MORRIS LESSMORE Author/illustrator William Joyce tells the story of Morris Lessmore whose life is “a book of his own writing…one orderly page after another.” On the heels of a catastrophic storm, Morris’ life is turned upside down. His beloved, personal library is missing, the city is in shambles, and a flurry of loose book pages swirls overhead.

A vibrant lady, “pulled along by a festive squadron of flying books,” sends down a book featuring Humpty Dumpty and beckons Morris to an abandoned library in the countryside.

Upon entry, Morris realizes the books are very much alive— circling him with fluttering book cover wings, asking to be read. Morris takes excellent care of the books, shares some of his favorites with neighbors, and in time, picks up his pen and writes once more. Years later, “stooped and crinkly,” Morris completes his book and, satisfied with the story, closes the cover. The books, which “read themselves to him each night” and cared for him as he grew old, spiral around him as he heads for the door. This tale speaks to the transformative power of books and the importance of keeping a story alive by sharing it with others.

Extension Activities: PERSONAL PICTURE DICTIONARY In The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, the “great big dictionary got in the last word each night.” Be a word collector by creating a personal picture dictionary—an authentic place to collect and access “words with personal significance” which will facilitate vocabulary development and support reading and writing achievement.

With your child, take a close look at a “First Dictionary” and notice how words and corresponding pictures are organized alphabetically.

Make a cover with a title for the personal picture dictionary on a separate index card.

Assist your child in organizing the cards in alphabetical order and then place a small binder ring or ribbon through the holes to secure the index cards.

Literature Scavenger Hunt

Permit your child to find pictures of interest from old magazines/online sources (e.g. stock.adobe. com) and cut them out or draw pictures of favorite people, places, and things. (Pre-cut/predrawn images for younger children can be used.)

Child cuts and glues each image to the top portion of a 5”x 8” index card (holes punched in the top left corner and a horizontal line drawn across the length of the index card, one inch from the bottom, ahead of time).

International Book Giving Day 2018 In both of the featured books this month, the common theme is the power of books as a way to stretch the imagination, learn more about

the world, increase vocabulary, enhance reading and writing skills, and stimulate the mind. A book… such power! Each year, on February 14th, millions of people around the world join together to place new or slightly used books into the hands of as many children as possible. It may be that the book you place into the hands of a child is the only book they will ever own and…that one act of kindness may make all the difference.

The following are a few ways to get involved with International Book Giving Day: 1. Place a book where children must wait, such as a doctor’s office, dental clinic, car repair shop or bus station.

2. Donate a book to the playroom on the children’s floor/wing of a local hospital.

3. Leave a book where a child will find it with a message telling them it is your gift to them—a restaurant with a play area, a park, or some other child-friendly venue.

4. Give a book you have loved and outgrown to another family for their child’s enjoyment.

5. Share a book with a shelter for the homeless/refugees. Smaller books are ideal for ease of transporting.

Benefits of a Preschool Education

argument is over. Boys and girls aged two, three, and four are young and need a few years in which they can spend quality time at home with their families. But while moms and dads are more than capable of teaching their children the fundamental skills needed in preparation for a big year—kindergarten—there are substantial reasons and evidence to conclude that preschool education is necessary.

The Classroom Environment The first step, walking over the threshold to enter the classroom filled with learning stations, tubs of blocks, a play kitchen, a reading nook, small desks and chairs, and plenty of floor space, can be overwhelming to the senses; but important for learning. The physical detachment can be challenging for both parent and child; yet, preschool is helping children acclimate to a program, which often lasts from 9 am to 12 pm.

The most valuable skills, learning the classroom and school rules, such as standing still and in a line, raising a hand to ask a question, or sitting at a desk and on the floor, take time and plenty of practice.

Responsibilities Mention the word backpack, and children are eager not only to have one, but also to experience the thrill of attending school. A preschool environment fosters a feeling of self-worth and the responsibility of taking care of one’s belongings and space. Children will learn to recognize their name, hang up a coat and their backpack, and turn in homework. Children will also be responsible for setting the table for a snack and washing their hands, being a line leader, helping to clean up toys or tables and taking possessions home each day.

The First Classmates Most young children are accustomed to meeting other children at play centers or playgrounds. Dealing with the necessary wide-open time to run and play is not required in a classroom situation. However, in the process of learning classroom rules, and engaging in various independent, partnered, group, and whole-class activities, preschoolers

are meeting classmates, practicing the art of socialization, and learning vital skills such as sharing, taking turns, and cooperation in a safe environment.

Teachers In addition to parents and grandparents, the next role model young children will meet is their classroom teacher. If we visit a preschool classroom, the love of the teacher can be noticed immediately. It is shown through her bulletin board, full of students’ pictures and drawings. She is eager to hear their stories, and offers praise for good deeds. The teacher can transform the shy or the anxious child, the over-eager or talkative child into a well-prepared student.

Curriculum Parents have the choice of sending their preschooler two days, Tuesday and Thursday; three days, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; or five days a week. In a wide variety of games and activities, children receive instruction in pre-literacy and pre-math skills. Singing and movement, learning rhymes and chants, sorting and matching, board games and counting, as well as using magnets and blocks, are just of the few skills or activities which foster exposure and learning. Preschoolers will maintain a schedule and may be able to attend a music class or other specialized class. Depending on the school, a lunch hour, outdoor recess, and craft-focused activities are available to extend the school day. It allows children to practice the skill of sitting in a cafeteria and engaging in group activities with peers.

Preschool may be perceived as structured playing; yet, the skills learned are so much more. The National Institute for Early Education Research has concluded that more than two-thirds of four-year-olds showed “better pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills” due to the influences of preschool education. Beyond readiness for school, preschool helps children become well-rounded individuals. February is the perfect time of year to start seeking a preschool for your child. Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder

occasion, we can relate to the brain taking over, controlling our actions and affecting our motivation and concentration levels. After time, it may be difficult to define what normal behavior is. The first step may be to seek advice and guidance from a doctor. The keen need to know what is happening with our bodies and abilities becomes urgent. Young children are born with impulsive and sometimes rambunctious behaviors, which may cause frustration and difficulties at home, school, and during socialization opportunities. With the combined efforts of the school staff and parents, doctors are able to gather information to determine whether a child has exhibited six out of the nine symptoms of inattention and hyperactive-impulsive behavior. While this process takes time, the rewards of a correct diagnosis can help parents, teachers, and the child understand the best traits of ADHD. Defining ADHD With three variations of ADHD, in which the person is predominantly inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive or a combination of both, ADHD is uniquely different in every person. The medical condition known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects how well a child can sit still, focus, and pay attention. While the brain controls a child’s activity and attention, ADHD does not impact intelligence. A child may have difficulty following instructions or sequential steps, and lack fine motor control, which will make writing or completing assignments a challenge; but, the positives are often overlooked. The child who daydreams, arriving at ten different thoughts simultaneously, could

later be an inventive artist and a master problem-solver. Most ADHD children are intellectually or artistically gifted.

Additional positives: * With the ability to consider a multitude of ideas at once, children with ADHD are open to different ideas. *W hen children with ADHD are motivated, they work, play hard, and strive to succeed. It may be difficult to distract them from a task that interests them, especially if the activity is interactive or hands-on.

A Mother’s Story “My son, Johnny, was diagnosed with ADHD in Kindergarten,” writes Susan Owens.

“He had been a handful in Pre-K, but his teacher just chalked it up to being a typical rambunctious little boy. I had nothing to base it on; so, his behavior was “normal” to me. Once he was in a more structured setting, namely Kindergarten, where he had to sit quietly and cooperate, his behavior started becoming a little more frustrating for his teacher, as well as at home. Jumping on desks, running around the room and yelling excitedly was not normal behavior. A trip to the pediatrician with discussions with the doctor and questionnaires for the teacher as well as myself based on Johnny’s behavior led to a diagnosis of ADHD. While we tried several medications, we went through a rough few months to see which one helped him best (without unbearable side effects to us or him) to settle down, to cooperate, and to be able to learn

and focus while allowing his classmates to do the same. There are two types of ADHD medication—stimulant and non-stimulant, with the stimulant type being the most commonly prescribed for children. Johnny clearly needed the stimulant; five years later, he is still taking it. While school has never been his favorite activity, the medication significantly helped him do much better in school and enjoy the extracurricular activities.”

The Teacher, Parent, and Child Triangle Together, parents and teachers can help an ADHD child thrive in his or her classroom and environment with the following suggestions: Plan Ahead: Prior to the beginning of school, schedule a meeting with the classroom teacher to discuss behavior and expectations, and to create a list of realistic goals. It is valuable to share the strategies which work well at home, and how rewards and misbehavior are treated.

Communication: Whether the means of communication is through e-mail, notes sent home, or in a scheduled meeting, discuss the best possible way to receive and convey questions and updates. It is important to establish a relationship where you both can openly share observations and information.

It is a myth that all ADHD kids are hyperactive and can rarely pay attention.

The first step in helping a child overcome neurological difficulties is to understand both the symptoms and the effects. Only then, can the wonderful array of superpowers begin to emerge!

The City of Arts, Innovation, and Environmental Sustainability

the vision put forth by Piedmont Environmental Alliance (PEA)—a local non-profit that has served as the voice for the environment in the Piedmont region since 2005. You may know PEA as the host of the Piedmont Earth Day Fair, the largest Earth Day celebration and environmental education event in central North Carolina. Presented every April at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, the Piedmont Earth Day Fair brings together as many as 10,000 people and more than 125 vendors to learn about, practice, and celebrate environmental stewardship. Mark your calendars for this year’s fair: April 21st from 10 AM-4 PM. Today, Piedmont Environmental Alliance’s impact goes beyond their signature sustainability and communitybuilding event. PEA educates students, builds community, and inspires action to create a healthier, more economically vibrant, and environmentally sustainable community.

PEA is a leader in environmental education, with innovative in-class presentations—Energy Explorers and Every Drop Counts—that use hands-on activities and dynamic conversations to teach math and science skills, and create citizen environmentalists with the tools to support a healthy and sustainable community. PEA provides these education programs to more than 3,500 students attending Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools each year, free of charge. Teachers and student participants agree that PEA’s programs “build young leaders who care about the community” and “give students new academic and citizenship skills.”

PEA’s Environmental Debate Program fills an important niche in the community, teaching high school students across the region the skills—including public speaking and analytical thinking—and the passion to become environmental leaders and change-makers. March 10th marks the 3rd Annual Environmental Debate Tournament hosted by PEA and Wake Forest University’s “Wake Debate.” More than 100 students from at least 10 high schools in the region will participate in the 1-day event, debating both sides of a controversial and newsworthy environmental topic.

This year, PEA launched a new strategy to bring people together and empower neighborhoods to address environmental challenges across Forsyth County—the Community Engagement Initiative. Led by public health professionals, environmentalists, and community leaders who want to see more sustainability in the region, the Initiative will identify and implement small-scale projects with big health and environmental impacts, like creating new community gardens, improving sidewalks and crosswalks, and working to reduce the use of and

exposure to toxic substances. The project will also work with the City of Winston-Salem and other agencies, businesses and non-profits, to implement policies and practices to “green” the region.

As the region grows, PEA is building the programs and partnerships that will bring environmental issues to the forefront. Working with students, government, businesses, and community leaders, PEA is creating a more holistically sustainable city—a city of arts, innovation, and the environment.

generations now, the world has celebrated holidays named after or attributed to saints: St. Valentine (whose holiday is quickly approaching), St. Nicholas (whose holiday has recently past), St. Patrick, etc. However, their original stories are not well known. Instead, the saints have been fictionalized and presentday holidays now have little to do with the saint they were initially ascribed to. In addition to this, the reason these people became saints is overlooked. How and why were they chosen to bear this title? Below, the original stories (pieced together through the fog of unwritten history and legend) of the three most prominent saints in America are revealed. The most recent person to be dubbed a saint is Mother Teresa, and the process of gaining this standing will be displayed following her story.

girl was therefore paid. St. Nicholas continued to give gold in secrecy until all of the daughters had been married. On Nicholas’ last visit, the father of the three had stayed awake to listen for the sounds of the approaching old St. Nick, witnessed his generosity, and began the legend of a man who brings gifts in the night to children.

ST. PATRICK When Patrick was 14, living in Britain, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in the land of Ireland, where he was to herd sheep for the rest of his life.

ST. VALENTINE There are several legends about the true Valentine; one goes like this:

The land was filled with pagans and magicians, but Patrick turned to God and prayed continuously for six years. One night he dreamed that God was telling him to run to the coast.

Claudius II was the Roman Emperor during Valentine’s lifetime, and he was convinced that young soldiers would be more willing to die for the Roman cause if they had no family to return to. Claudius, therefore, issued an edict prohibiting early marriage. He would have preferred it, as was becoming popular in that time, if young people had polygamous relationships (those with more than one person). Valentine, however, encouraged monogamous marriage for young Christians and would often defy Claudius, performing ceremonies in the church away from the eye of the government.

Many scholars attribute the continued existence and popularity of monogamy to Valentine.

When Patrick did so, he found a ship waiting and was able to gain passage to Britain, soon to be reunited with his family.

Valentine’s actions did not go unnoticed for long, and he was soon captured and tortured for his insubordination. It is said that while in prison, Valentine fell in love with the jailor’s daughter and sent her the first valentine, signed with the classic phrase, “From your Valentine.”

Ultimately, Valentine was beheaded for his faith, after trying to convert Emperor Claudius himself to Christianity.

Valentine is now known as the patron saint of engaged couples, bee keepers, epilepsy and fainting victims, love, the plague, and young people (that’s you!).

ST. NICOLAS Though Nicholas was a Christian bishop, his original life’s story, which has morphed into the legend of Santa Claus, has little to do with the birth of Christ or even giving presents to loved ones.

Nicolas inherited a fortune from his parents, who died when Nicolas was young. He was reared by his Christian uncle and became a bishop.

In the village where he ministered, Nicholas heard tell of a man with three daughters who had become desperately poor and was on the verge of selling his children into prostitution to keep them alive.

Nicholas crept up to the man’s house one knight and tossed a purse of gold into an open window. The bride dowry for the oldest 64 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

Patrick became a bishop in Britain, where he received another vision from God. This vision depicted the people of Ireland calling him to return to them to preach.

He returned to the land that had enslaved him and against much opposition established churches and preached for 40 years. At some points, he would pluck a four-leafed clover, the Irish symbol for luck, from the grass, and use the iconic shamrock to explain the holy trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one).

MOTHER TERESA At age 18, Mary Teresa joined a community of nuns and was soon sent to be a missionary in India. Teresa taught in St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta; however, she was drawn outside of the walls of the school by the immense poverty she witnessed in the slums. She was permitted to leave the school, and without funds began to teach the poorest of the poor, eventually establishing the order of the “Missionaries of Charity,” which is still functioning today, 20 years after her death.

REQUIREMENTS To become a saint, as the four individuals above have done, one must be declared one by the current pope after a rigorous investigation into the individual’s life. There are two requirements: one, the individual in question must have led a holy life worthy of imitation, or been martyred, or cast off an unholy lifestyle to pursue a godly one. Two, the individual must have two miracles attributed to him or her after their death. In other words, someone must pray for the help of the deceased, and the prayer must be answered.

Each of the saints above underwent the process of canonization, except St. Patrick (the only saint never to be officially canonized). The process, as exemplified by Mother Teresa, can be undertaken even today.

TEEN RELATIONSHIPS IN A HIGH-TECH WORLD

ago, when my wife was teasing my then thirteenyear-old son about maybe having a girlfriend (he didn’t, she was just making a joke in the moment), I gave her my sincere opinion on the subject. I said I’m in no hurry to get into that phase of their lives. She looked at me perplexed, knowing she was only teasing him, but at the same time was curious as to why there was so much reluctance on my part.

I waited till we were in private and I explained my feelings—that once a teenager, boy or girl, enters that phase of their life everything begins to get complicated. Hormones are raging, Endorphins, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Dopamine are on the rise and all sense of normalcy is lost. Their minds become captivated completely by their “relationship” and everything else takes a back seat. Depending on the situation, school work can suffer, as their attention is diverted to other, what they consider “more important” things.

Their time, which is already in short supply, is now gobbled up in constant communication with the “love of their life.”

And that brings me to another concern I have for this latest generation. When I grew up, the only way we could talk to our significant others was by telephone or in-person. If we wanted to know where they were at all times (an unhealthy practice, I might add) we had either to wait till they got home and called us, or we relied on friends who may have seen them around.

Not so today, with the availability of smartphones with GPS tracking, teens can track each other’s every move throughout the day and night, 24/7. In addition, most of the time there is a pictorial or video record of many of their experiences on Facebook and Snapchat among others.

One would wonder if the sheer existence of technology that allows for this type of constant monitoring doesn’t make the relationship seem more like an addiction than an actual relationship. Add in the dynamic of both parties being young teens (whose minds won’t fully develop until their early twenties) and the situation becomes even more complicated.

After all, how can they tell the difference between relationship addiction and true love?

This is an issue of concern for teens today. In my day of landlines and personal interaction, I think one could sense better where the relationship was going. There was more free

time in-between to be you and have other things going on in your life. Today, a toxic teen relationship can be perpetuated and nurtured through the constant contact and distraction away from everything else that used to go on in their lives before the couple was formed. They don’t realize this, because there’s not enough life outside the relationship to see what’s actually happening to them. As a result, they may spend more time in the wrong relationships than they should and have less time to find the right one.

A Pew Research study of over a thousand teenagers (ages 13-17) found that nearly a third of those surveyed indicated that “social media makes them feel more connected to what is happening in their significant other’s life.” That same number also admitted their “current or former partners have checked up on them multiple times per day via the Internet or cell phone.”

When it comes to texting, 15% of teens in relationships said “their current or former partners expected to hear from them hourly, while 88% said at least once per day.”

Another concern arises when the relationship goes sour. Social media and texting can be an easier avenue to vent your frustration in ways you would never do in person. Again, the Pew Research found that 27% advised that “social media can make them feel jealous or unsure about their relationship,” adding, 22% have used the Internet or texting as a way of putting their “ex-” down and “saying mean things to them.”

When it’s all said and done, what’s a parent to do?

Unfortunately, the old-school method still applies today in most cases. You just need to be there with a listening ear, a strong shoulder to lean on, and provide gentle encouragement as needed. You can advise them on healthy and unhealthy relationships, perhaps using some of your own experiences as examples (being careful here of how much you share), and defining the differences between love and infatuation. Finally, remind them to keep their friends close (a common mistake) and stay true to who they really are in the relationship. Regrettably, however, this is one of those parts of life they’ll no doubt navigate mainly on their own; and that can be just as hard on the parents as it is on the teen.

Journaling Your Family: A Different Approach

it comes to building memories with the family, it’s getting harder and harder.

Though we all have smartphones, we tend either to have our head down over them or use the cameras for selfies. This year, make it a point to journal your family’s love in a different way. Journaling special moments doesn’t have to be relegated just to a scrapbook. There are a ton of fun ways to preserve memories and relive special events. But when the baby needs changing; you’re trying to figure out what to fix for dinner, and trying to help your second grader practice their spelling words, “memorable” may not be the first word that leaps to mind. However, these are the moments that make up real life. Those conversations, laughter, and days will go by in a blink of an eye.

CONSIDER THESE IDEAS TO JOURNAL YOUR FAMILY MEMORIES: •U tilize social media with a specialty photo album. A writer for Forsyth Magazines recently used her birthday for such a purpose, with a photo album she titled, “A Year in My Life: Take 43.” She’s using this album to catalog a year’s worth of memories between birthdays.

•U se a shadowbox to collect a year’s worth of memories—movie tickets, concert tickets, programs from

special events. Give it a shake every now and then to see what memory comes to the top.

• As your kids outgrow their T-shirts, save the favorites, or the ones from camp or special sports teams. Have them made into a memory quilt for high school graduation.

• For the family who loves to travel, hang a map of the United States (or world, depending on how much you travel!) on a large corkboard. When you get home, print a photo from the trip. Cut it out in the shape of the state (or country) you visited and pin it on the appropriate area of the map.

• The chalkboard favorites and photo opps are a great way of recording developmental progress for babies and toddlers.

• Have a pretty jar on the table with markers and colorful paper nearby.

Once a week, have everyone in the family write down their favorite thing that happened. Read them on New Year’s Eve. • When you come back from the beach with seashells, pick a favorite and hot-glue a magnet on the back of it. Everyone in the family will see it on a regular basis when you put it on the refrigerator, giving everyone the chance to remember the fun memories you made together.

•K eep a sand jar. Get a tall, cylindrical vase and some clear labels. When you travel, make sure you take a small jar to collect a bit of sand or soil. When you get back, pour it in the vase, and label that layer with the place you visited.

•S chool art projects can become overwhelming after a while.

Frame some for the grandparents as gifts, or even cut them apart for bookmarks.

• I f you read books with your kids, write in the covers some of the favorite points about the book.

Years later, if you read those same books to your grandchildren, you’ll love being able to tell them about their parent’s favorite character.

•W hen your child begs you to make a stamped penny at a museum, save them. It only takes 5–6 linked together to make a fun memory bracelet.

•E very year, on the first day of school, don’t just take a standard picture. Have your child hold the picture of the previous year. By the time senior year rolls around, you’ll have built a pretty cool Droste effect.

Creating memories is a beautiful part of family time, but recording them doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. Have fun and enjoy every moment with your family!

GOD IS LOVE

Dear friends, we must love each other because love comes from God.

~ 1 John 4:7

God

loves you. God loves you when you’re being naughty and when you’re being helpful. He loves the meanie who picks on others, and he loves the ragged old woman who begs for money on the corner. God is love! (1 John 4:16) First Corinthians 13 is known as “The Love Chapter” in the Bible. It doesn’t talk about Valentine’s Day or candy hearts or flowers. It tells us about God’s love and the kind of love he wants us to have. God’s love makes us patient and kind. His love likes the truth better than a lie. God’s love is hopeful and helpful and trusting.

The “Love Chapter” also tells us what love is NOT like. Real love isn’t jealous or rude, and it doesn’t say, “Look at me! I’m pretty great!” Love isn’t selfish, and it doesn’t keep a long list of the bad things that other people do.

Love isn’t always easy, is it? It’s even hard for grownups—like parents or teachers or coaches. If someone is reading this with you, take a few minutes to talk about this.

Are you always patient with your family or neighbors? When have you been rude or selfish?

We don’t always love with God’s kind of love, but Chapter 13 has some good news for us. While we’re young, we think and figure things out like a child. That makes sense, right? But no one wants to be a child forever. It goes on to say that as we grow up, we will outgrow our baby ways. Our body, mind, and heart will grow and change.

Getting bigger and stronger and smarter doesn’t mean you’ll do everything right.

Because God is love, He’s the only one who can show you how to love others. Ask Him to live in your heart and make you the kind of person He wants you to be. Just like you start looking more like mom or dad as you get older, when God lives in you, you grow to be more like Him. If you ever notice that you’re not being very kind or loving, take a moment and ask God to help you. You can quietly say a prayer as simple as, “God, I don’t like that person very much right now. Help me love like You love. Thank you.” Because God loves us, we can love others.

Expectations

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

I adore our family’s healthcare provider. He is smart, kind and compassionate. I don’t just consider him my doctor, I consider him my friend. And, if not for a miracle a few years back, Daniel wouldn’t be around today to be the son, brother, friend and caregiver that so many of us have grown to know and love.

In 2013, Daniel suffered a series of strokes that nearly took his life. He was only 27 at the time and, other than the nasty flu he was battling, was completely healthy. He was the last person you’d expect to have a stroke. Yet, there he was, on a ventilator, clinging to life. Doctors told his family that he might never wake up, and if he did, he’d probably never be able to return to work.

The Lord clearly had different plans for Daniel, because, with time and several months of rehab, his condition completely turned around. Today, he suffers absolutely no side effects from the ordeal.

While Daniel’s physical recovery was nothing short of miraculous, the way he has turned this near tragedy into a tremendous blessing is also amazing. When Daniel was still recovering from his stroke, friends and family rallied around him in many ways, including raising over $10,000 to help him with the medical bills he had amassed.

Feeling incredibly grateful for the restoration of his health and for the love of his community, Daniel decided to pay it forward. So, exactly one year after his stroke, he threw a “stroke-iversary” party. He invited loved ones to join him in celebrating his recovery and he also used the event to raise money for someone else in need. The first event was so successful, he has continued to host a “stroke-iversary” party every year since. So far, he’s raised nearly $15,000 for people in need in our community. And, he has no plans to stop. In fact, he is working on forming a non-profit organization so he can grow the annual event.

We live in a fallen world. Bad stuff, unexpected stuff, unwanted stuff happens to all of us. We’re all going to face things that make our heads spin and our hearts break. We can’t avoid many of the painful things that happen in our lives. But, we can choose how we respond to them. We don’t have to celebrate the bad things that happen to us, but, like Daniel, we can celebrate the fact we survived them. We can be proud of what we learned from them. We can be thankful for the people who loved us through them.

In

the book, Pastors are People Too, authors Jimmy Dodd and Larry Magnuson suggest that we, as churchgoers, each make a list of 20 expectations we have for our pastors. Your list might include things like: he should deliver powerful and relevant sermons, he should be there if my family has a crisis, he should have a friendly and welcoming demeanor, his family should regularly participate in church activities, and so on.

Once your list of 20 has been made, the authors say to multiply your 20 expectations by the number of members of your church’s congregation, and you will have some sense of the immense pressure to please that your pastor faces every day.

If you find yourself disappointed because your pastor did not live up to your expectations in some way, #BeTheOne to offer grace and understanding, recognizing that your needs are just a few of the many that he/ she is likely trying to meet.

The Illusion of Control

I

am a self-professed control freak. I am always the driver; never the passenger. When it comes to spreadsheets, don’t ask me to explain it. Just get out of my way and let me handle it. Help me with the cooking? No, thank you. Please get out of my kitchen.

I am a person who likes to go it alone.

And it’s not because I don’t think another person can do what I do...I just want the credit.

Okay, a little bit, too, I want it done my way, because obviously (insert sarcasm here), my way is the best way.

I still like things done a certain way, and, for a long time, I thought I had things under control. However, when I finally surrendered my will to God, it clicked into place. I’d been living an illusion. The control I thought I had—it is (and always was) non-existent. I was foolish to think otherwise. Proverbs 28:26 agrees with me:

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool; But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.

The surrender to God’s will is the only way to live. In fact, in the utter surrender of your will, when you admit to God that you have no control... THAT is the moment that will become the most liberating moment in your life.

We are living in a world that is spiraling out of control, leaving many of us grasping for that illusion of control...

If I can feel in control, then maybe I can appear stronger than I am... Others will not see that I’m scared... My actions will convince others that I’m something that I’m not...

Now with this said, it can feel a bit like, “Why bother?” God isn’t telling us NEVER to make plans. The last part of the verse says, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” So, clearly, God doesn’t expect us not to live our lives. However, instead of relying on ourselves and our own illusions that have no basis in reality, God wants us to consult with Him. He wants our plans and our lives to line up with His will for us.

There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.

~ Proverbs 19:21

The Holy Spirit, as our great Counselor, will help direct us when we ask for help. Because no matter what decisions we make, the Lord’s will WILL prevail.

And we can trust that God’s will is going to be good for us.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

~Romans 8:28

When we are right with God, when we’ve surrendered our plans to Him, and we’ve asked God to take the driver’s seat in our lives, then we can trust He will take care of us. It’s promised in the aforementioned verse from Romans 8:28, as well as in another one of my very favorite verses in the Bible:

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. ~ Jeremiah 29:11

An illusion.

Nothing more.

The Bible reminds us that everything about this world is temporary.... That WE are temporary.... No one is promised tomorrow....

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

While we don’t have control; He does. While we don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring; He does. And best of all, we can trust that He has amazing plans for us.

And that’s good enough for me.

And when we trust God with His will…His plan...His control...He gives us the peace that surpasses understanding.

WELCOME to the shortest month of the calendar year!

I’m a huge fan of this month because it is home to my personal birthday celebration; however, for many of our readers, February is just a month to recover from the weeks of back-to-back holiday celebrations concluding 2017.

CONGRATULATIONS READERS: you’ve made it through Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas 2017; here’s to the New Year, 2018! This is no small feat.

I secretly believe the folks in the greeting card industry did their best to promote Valentine’s, just because they believed we customers were eager to have another celebration to purchase extravagant gifts—flowers, stuffed animals, chocolates, cards, cards and cards galore. Forgive me, I may be the odd one out…but by February I’m finished with celebrations.

CONFESSION: I have never purchased a Valentine’s Card, even for my husband. (Yikes!)

Call me crazy, but I guess I’m just hoping the residual euphoria of Christmas gifts may reverberate among my family and

friends through March, at least; April, if it was a really, really good gift. From his amazing text identifying five love languages, Gary Chapman (Senior Associate Pastor at Calvary, WinstonSalem), might confirm “gifts” are NOT my “love language,” and thus I name my own struggle with this tiny month, whose only culture celebration points to consumerism and commercialism.

HERE’S THE ITCH: Christians celebrate God’s gracious gift to the WHOLE world in the person-deity Jesus Christ. Why would we dedicate this celebration time to recognize only ones we love?

To clarify: to recognize people who very likely already know they are loved!

Why not spend these 28 glorious days reaching out to people we often ignore, overlook or silence in the other— eleven—months of the year?

What would it look like for all Christians to claim February as a celebration of witness? To intentionally reach out to persons in our community who do not know the warmth and love of Jesus Christ? Who do not know the JOY of resurrection or the promise of new life and forgiveness?

What would it look like if every

worshiping congregation in the Forsyth Family network claimed February for Christ—dedicated it to sharing the kind of hospitality we read of in the gospels of Jesus: welcoming the refugee, the prostitute, the homeless, the destitute, the hopeless, the weary, the broken, the lonely, the mourning?

So much of our culture associates Christians with the consumer-driven Christmas season of December. What if, instead of living into the old identity of the December Christmas season, we did something new?

What if we claimed February as our month of witness to celebrate God’s gracious gift of unending love and amazing grace? What if February were known, not just for Valentine’s Day, but

by Christian communities everywhere as a time to live out our call as ministers to the Gospel of Jesus Christ? What would it look like for Christians to claim these 28 days (and sometimes 29) for the reconciling ministry Paul wrote and taught us about? How might our world be different?

Please keep on the Sunny Side of Life and do all you can to shine bright this February.

preparation for this article, I do what many writers do: I turned to Facebook for opinions. I have never gotten so much feedback to a question as I did to “What is your favorite old Gospel hymn and why?” It warmed my heart tremendously, and I loved reading the “Why’s” behind so many beautiful classics. The response completely changed the original plans for this article, and it’s wonderful to learn the old favorites haven’t been forgotten. While there’s nothing wrong with contemporary worship— for me, I still love traditional Gospel hymns. Apparently, I’m not alone.

With that said, let’s celebrate some traditional favorites.

WHY TRADITIONAL GOSPEL? When we speak of traditions, and things that are passed down to us, nothing we receive has the potential to become as personal in our lives as the faith we learn from our family. Gospel hymns conjure memories of parents and grandparents; and of learning the stories of Jesus in Sunday School classrooms of yesteryear.

Just as certain songs take us back to specific memories, traditional Gospel music offers us similar comfort at a richer, more personal level, and the knowledge that God’s love endures throughout the years.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS So many of our traditional Gospel songs have backstories of inspiration that are as relatable today as when they were written. It’s the beauty of those deeply personal stories that makes the lyrics so enduring. Consider the stories behind three of the most popular: 76 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

“Amazing Grace” was written in 1772 by John Newton. The song is autobiographical and was inspired by Newton’s own conversion. After years of denying God, and mocking anyone who expressed faith in Christ, Newton found himself calling out to Him during the middle of a storm. Years later, Newton wrote “Amazing Grace” for a New Year’s Day prayer meeting. Over 200 years later, it is arguably the most popular song. Biography.com states that the song has been included on over 11,000 recorded albums and is performed over 10 million times per year.

In 1873, Horatio G. Spafford lost his four daughters after they drowned in a shipwreck. During his season of mourning, he wrote “It Is Well with My Soul.” Though devastated, he clung to his faith, penning the words that have touched countless lives. When we don’t understand the “Why’s” behind tragic events, we can remember—Jesus died for us so our souls can be well and whole.

We can thank Swedish poet, Carl Boberg, for the lyrics to “How Great Thou Art,” which he wrote in 1885.

Boberg was inspired to write the hymn during the calm following a storm. Local church bells helped fuel his inspiration. It’s a great reminder of the overwhelming greatness of our Lord God. VARIOUS RECORDINGS For some artists, the recording of Gospel music is a part of their own personal heritage. As previously mentioned, “Amazing Grace” has been

recorded on over 11,000 albums. Just a few of the notable names who have recorded it include Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart, Meryl Streep, Alan Jackson, Willie Nelson, and Whitney Houston, U2, and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.

It’s a GRAND Life

So

here we already are in the month of February. As a child it seemed like it took forever to get from one birthday to the next, one Christmas to the next, or one summer break to the next. Now, however, I feel like the months and years just fly by. As February is the month of love, here are some things I love about being a grandparent.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

Ten years ago this past December, our eldest daughter presented us with our first, beautiful grandchild. As she was a scheduled c-section due to being breech, we were in the waiting room awaiting news of her arrival. The emotion of total love that flooded through me while holding that precious bundle was greater than I imagined it would be. I wanted nothing less for her than the best life has to offer, just as I did for my own children. Everyone I knew that had become a grandparent had told me how wonderful it was. I couldn’t imagine that it could be any better than being a parent. I don’t know if it’s better, but I can say it is different in all the best ways. I love the way I feel every time I see them or hear their voices.

Three plus years later and our family was blessed once again when our eldest presented us with our first grandson.

Except for my father, and subsequently my husband, my family had consisted of females. I wondered how different it would be having a boy in the mix. For the first couple of years, there really wasn’t too much difference. More interest in trucks and cars than dolls and princesses, but otherwise, I was somewhat relieved that I wasn’t overwhelmed with change. At two years of age, that pretty much changed. The energy level shot up, and all things boy rose to the surface. It is at the same time exhilarating and exhausting and keeps me young - for the most part and definitely on my toes learning all things boy. I love it!

We now have three granddaughters and three grandsons.

They range in age from 22 months to 10 years of age.

Now, that we are in the same town with three of them, I am able to spend much more time with them. I now have the

opportunity to see what interests them, what foods they like, their favorite toys and activities, watch them being creative in their play, and how they socialize with others.

I can be there, usually at a moment’s notice, to help my daughters so they can run an errand while the little ones nap. In other words, I love being a part of their lives.

I am very fortunate to have all our family living in the same state and having a wonderful relationship with all of them. I love that my grandchildren’s parents are excellent examples for these little people. I love that the parents acknowledge their children’s differences; that they provide comfort in a gentle, loving manner when they have been hurt either physically or emotionally; that both parents are involved in their upbringing; that they expose their children to faith and the awareness of the needs of others; that they are being raised with manners, to be respectful, and show appreciation; and that they all have pets for their children to love and learn responsibility for their care and treatment.

I love that whenever I see my grands I am greeted with shouts of “Gigi” and big hugs. Maybe that’s what everyone meant when telling me how wonderful being a grandparent is. That is definitely a part of it, but hardly all. It is the total package of watching them grow, seeing them change and mature, reminding me of myself and my children when we were young. With each of their births, my heart grew, and if more grands should come along, it will continue to do so, embracing the purest love these precious gifts from God bring. Love, love, love!

The Worst of It

is going to be one of those “we’ve all been there” articles, so please indulge my whining for a few minutes.

We’re nearly 4 weeks into this little “new baby” adventure, and I cannot remember the last time I got any reasonable amount of sleep. It’s clearly starting to wear on my nerves. How do I know this for sure?

Evidence: •T he tiny bundle of joy that I could not wait to meet? Cries. Incessantly.

•M y darling and precocious daughter? Is a very cute holy terror all of a sudden, as well as annoying most of the time.

•M y husband, who was so happy to have his “normal” (aka nonpregnant) wife back? Has given up and now leaves the room when I enter.

• I just realized I have been wearing two different socks for Heaven knows how long.

•T he people who want to bring me dinner, meet for coffee, come sit with the baby so I can nap, and so on? They are actually making me feel alternately incompetent or resentful.

What the ___ is wrong with me?

Perhaps it’s because: • I have not showered in two days. Somehow washing my face and brushing my teeth actually seems to be enough. *Disclaimer—I have had to change my shirt/pants at least three times due to baby-splosions, so it’s not like I am sitting around growing mold. At least, not on my clothes.

•T he theoretical “free time” to nap or exercise has yet to materialize.

• I am feeling enormous resentment for anyone who is sleeping more than 90 minutes in a row.

• I have started counting the number of times my daughter says “Mommy” daily, hoping that someone will offer me $1 for each time so we can buy a nanny.

• I am existing almost solely on whole-food supplement smoothies, deli meat, and candy corn.

I keep thinking back to my younger days when I only had myself to take care of. Was that life really so empty? Is this what I’ve traded my freedom for—being peed and barfed on 2-3 times daily, and spending an exorbitant amount of time worrying about what the family is going to eat and whether everyone has pooped yet today (and if so, how much)? Somehow, at some point, I chose to give up worrying only about me in order to get pulled 50 different directions at once. What was the draw that pulled me inescapably toward not owning my own life anymore?

Then we get to 9:05 pm. The lucky ones are upstairs in bed, leaving me alone with the screamer. Oddly, we sit together on the couch and suddenly he is not wiggling, and conks out in less than 6 minutes. (Whether I can lay him down by himself is yet to be seen, but at least he is quiet.) The TV is down from volume level 40 to a calmer 25, and I have discovered the HUB channel, which is playing The Wonder Years, soon to be followed

by Family Ties, the equivalent of comfort food for my brain. It is calm enough that I could actually eat something substantial (but opt to just take a vitamin), and, faced with sudden quiet time, I try to decide whether to touch up my roots or just veg on the couch. (Why I am not considering sleep, makes no sense, but I’m not. Yet.) In the stillness, I realize: this is the worst of it. Today stank, but there’s always tomorrow. It may stink too, but it won’t always… at least, this is what people keep telling me. I try to think ahead to mornings when my daughter and her little brother will run into our room with excitement, and to the two of them practicing sports and watching movies together, and fighting over whose turn it is to choose the dinner spot for Friday night out. When I considered all of those things before getting pregnant, I did not imagine this beginning: the nutty schedule, the crying, the inability to plan more than an hour of my day at a time…and did I mention the crying?

Once I figure out how to remember the big picture in the little moments, I think I’ll be okay. That will be a challenge until I am getting enough sleep to remember when I last ate, much less get perspective. But if this is indeed the worst of it, won’t the best of it be completely worth it?

Beating Cancer through Hope & Love Over the holidays, my daughters and I had

the pleasure of sharing the special joy in delivering gifts and meeting families supported by The Hope & Love Foundation.

This amazing non-profit organization supports young patients battling cancer, as well as their families.

The founders, Joelle and Kamil Boulos, know those challenges too well. In 2010, their daughter, Rima, was diagnosed at the age of 8 with one of the rarest, most aggressive forms of childhood leukemia. During her cancer treatment and recovery, Rima also survived a severe case of meningitis and a stroke.

Her courage, spirit, and faith have made her a hero in the eyes of her doctors, nurses, friends, family, and everyone who crosses paths with her. The Boulos’ said, "We would not have been able to endure these challenges and difficult times without God’s mercy and the support of our loving community. These experiences have fueled our hearts with a passion to encourage others who are fighting similar battles."

The foundation's mission "is to love, serve, and inspire hope in others who are battling cancer. We long to support our community just as our community has supported us in our fight for our daughter’s life," the Boulos’ said.

Spread the love by making these easy sweet treats with your little ones for Valentine’s Day!

RED & WHITE VELVET COOKIES

SWEET FORTUNE COOKIES

SWEETHEART STRAWBERRY FLOAT

INGREDIENTS: 1 package red velvet cake mix 6 Tbsp. butter, melted 2 large eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract 3 4-oz. bars white chocolate

INGREDIENTS: 1 egg white

INGREDIENTS: Vanilla ice cream

/8 tsp. vanilla extract

Strawberry soda

1 pinch of salt

Whipped topping (optional)

¼ cup unbleached all-purpose flour

Strawberry (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1. U sing a wooden spoon, combine cake mix, melted butter, vanilla, egg until mixed.

(optional: a drop of red food coloring will make them pink!)

¼ cup white sugar

3. Refrigerate 1 hour or overnight.

DIRECTIONS: 1. First, make the fortunes. Write out sweet sayings or lines of poetry on paper and cut out. Fold small enough to fit into the cookie.

4. P reheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease baking sheets. Cut cookie dough log into ¼” slices and place onto baking sheet.

2. Mix the egg white and vanilla until foamy, but not stiff.

5. B ake 10-12 minutes or until set. Let cookies cool on pan for 1 minute, then transfer to wire rack until completely cool.

3. Sift the flour, salt and sugar and blend into the egg white mixture. The batter should be a little runny.

4. Grease the cookie sheet. (Optional: Flip the cookie sheet and use the bottom.) Place a teaspoon of batter onto the cookie sheet, using the back of the spoon to spread it in a thin circle.

2. R oll dough into a 12-inch log. Wrap in wax paper and seal in plastic wrap.

6. B reak white chocolate pieces and place into microwave-safe dish. Microwave on high or until just melted. Stir until smooth.

7. S pread the white chocolate mixture on one-half of each cookie. Rest cookies until chocolate is set, then serve.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place two scoops of vanilla ice cream into a glass (or those Starbucks Frappuccino bottles you’ve been holding on to).

2. Slowly pour strawberry soda over the ice cream. Note: It will foam a lot!

3. Optionally, you can add whipped cream on top and a strawberry wedge to the edge of the glass. Optional decoration: include a pink-and-white paper straw!

5. Since the cookies remain flexible while warm, bake in small batches at 350 degrees for 3-5 minutes or until the edges are browned. Using a metal spatula, carefully and quickly remove the cookies.

6. Quickly place the folded fortune in the center of the cookie and fold in half. Using the rim of a glass or mug, press the folded cookie edge against the rim to create the fortune cookie “dent.” As it cools, the cookie will harden.

I Wonder What Would Happen If...

Celebrate National Inventor’s Day – February 11th

“To invent you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” ~ Thomas Edison National Inventor Day is celebrated on February 11th, 2018.

The date also celebrates the birth of one of the most famous of inventors, Thomas Edison, who held over 1,000 patents.

Inventors are a curious lot. Most share common personality characteristics, maybe some that you yourself have.

For instance...

Were you one of those kids who routinely took your toys apart to see how they worked? Did your imagination lend itself to making a toy into something else entirely? A child-like wonder is one of the key traits for an inventor. The ability to see something and then see beyond it to another use or function.

Unfortunately, that child’s wonder somehow fades away as we grow; we need to reclaim that visionary ability.

Inventors have the ability to be flexible, to see what might work, and regroup if something doesn’t. Plus they must have the ability to assess whether an invention will be profitable; there are bills to be paid and monies needed for every new idea. Viewing their creative endeavors as a business is an important attribute. Presenting a new product in the hope of selling it on the open market requires the ability to handle criticism and feedback. Shark Tank comes to mind as a good example; encouraging innovative thinking, creating a product, and marketing that idea in the hope of launching a business.

We hear the phrase “failure is not an option” quite often. That doesn’t really relate well to inventing. In the words of Albert Einstein, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” Try and try again; that’s the name of the game.

Like the real estate mantra of “Location, Location, Location,” the inventor’s mantra is “Test – Test – Test.” Learning from 84 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

every effort leads to getting better and better at whatever is being designed, created, or envisioned. An optimistic personality may be the ticket to avoiding discouragement during this phase. Benjamin Franklin stated the concept well: “Energy and persistence conquer all things.”

Much like writers who are encouraged to read as much as they can, inventors are encouraged to attend trade shows and seminars. Learning about what others are working on can be the spark needed to jumpstart an idea, or the “lightbulb moment” to a breakthrough. Developing and nurturing one’s analytical abilities goes a long way.

Working consistently and with focus allows those creative juices to stir and develop to their fullest capacity. Like any learning, keeping up a steady progress provides positive results.

Protecting your invention is paramount. Thomas Edison clearly knew this by the number of patents he held. If working on something new, privacy is critical. No inventor wants to have to share credit for an idea that originated in his/her mind. For example, John Walker, a chemist, accidentally invented the match; however, he thought it was not a big deal so he did not apply for a patent. Nowadays, 500 billion matches are used annually. The guy credited with inventing the Karaoke concept failed to patent the idea and lost out on a multi-billion dollar industry. An understanding of intellectual property and how to protect those ideas is necessary. There are specialists in the field, but be sure to have a basic understanding.

Got an idea for something? Maybe it’s time to give it some attention. Who knows what could happen? You just might have the next best product on the market! You never know!

How to Work Out with Your Sweetie

BY MADISON SKAKLE Valentine’s Day is here, and why not spend more quality time with your sweetie and work out together?! I’m sharing how I enjoy an occasional workout with my husband and fun workout for y’all to try!

When I can get my husband to the gym (he’s a resident at Wake Forest Baptist Health, so his days off are few and far between), we do enjoy doing our workout together. When Austin and I first met, we would try to work out together, but it would end up with one of us being frustrated. I’ve learned over the past several years some tips and tricks to make the most of your partner workout!

Come up with a plan together. Austin and I talk about what workouts we are going to do prior to getting to the gym. This way, once we are there, it’s “go time” and let’s get it done.

Working out together doesn’t necessarily mean doing the same thing. Let’s face it, I don’t want to bicep curl 30 pounds like Austin. Even working out side-by-side has the same benefits as doing everything together. Sometimes, Austin will do a bicep set and I will do shoulders, biceps and triceps right beside him. It’s fun to see each other work hard and break a sweat!

If you feel up to it, try something a little harder.

When your partner is with you at the gym, try a move that may be too hard for you when alone. Now is the time to ask for help and lean on your sweetie! He/ she can help with your form and spot you if the weight gets to be too much.

Alternate the sets. If you are using machines, alternate sets with each other. For example, Austin will do the leg press machine for 20 reps, while I do some free weights right beside him. This way, I can encourage him and make the most of my time.

Help each other stretch at the end.

My favorite part of working out with Austin is when he helps me stretch at the end of the workout.

Your partner can do the same! It’s fun to sit and stretch and feel the accomplishment of the work you just put in.

Quick and Easy At-Home Valentine’s Day Workout: (Equipment Needed: Dumbbells) Warm up for 3-5 minutes by jogging in place, doing jumping jacks or step touches.

Pushups – make sure you face each other. Do 3 sets of 20.

Plank Claps – face each other in a plank position and alternate high fives. Make sure to keep your hips down. Do 3 sets of 20.

Wall Sits – sit beside each other on the wall during the wall sits. Do 3 1-minute sets.

Lunges with Weight Passes – Lunge with a heavy dumbbell in your hands and then pass it over to your partner. Keep the passing going. Do 3 1-minute sets.

Sit Ups with Weight Passes – Do a normal sit up with a heavy dumbbell on your chest and pass it over to your partner. Keep the passing going. Do 3 sets of 20.

You can repeat these moves, but make sure to include a cardio burst in between!

We make reservations far in advance, get a babysitter lined up, buy a new outfit and look forward to that night out with your favorite person! HakkaChow has everything you need for the perfect dinner on this fun holiday… but make sure you plan ahead and make your reservations early!

Many restaurants offer a special menu for Valentine’s Day, and HakkaChow is no different! Simple New York-Style Cheesecake

Cheesecake

takes time. Cheesecake takes patience. Cheesecake is not for the faint of heart.

Cheesecake is delicious. A favorite of my husband’s, this classic dessert takes time, but its creamy texture and rich taste make it so decadent, and a perfect Valentine’s treat. A fair warning though—give yourself time to make this recipe. I would recommend making it one day in advance.

INGREDIENTS:

Crust 6 whole graham crackers, broken into pieces 1 /3 cup packed dark brown sugar ½ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt 7 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1. FOR THE CRUST: Adjust oven racks to upper-middle and lower-middle positions and heat oven to 325 degrees.

Process cracker pieces and sugar in food processor until finely ground, about 30 seconds. Add flour and salt and pulse to combine, 2 pulses. Add 6 tablespoons melted butter and pulse until crumbs are evenly moistened, about 10 pulses.

Brush bottom of 9-inch springform pan with ½ Tablespoon melted butter. Using your hands, press crumb mixture evenly into pan bottom. Using flat bottom of measuring cup or ramekin, firmly pack crust into the pan. Bake on lower-middle rack until fragrant and beginning to brown around edges, about 13 minutes.

Transfer to a rimmed baking sheet and set aside to cool completely. Reduce oven temperature to 200 degrees.

Filling 2½ pounds cream cheese, softened 1½ cups granulated sugar 1 /8 teaspoon salt 1 /3 cup sour cream 2 teaspoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 6 large eggs, plus 2 large egg yolks

2. FOR THE FILLING: Using a stand mixer fitted with a paddle, beat cream cheese, ¾ cup sugar, and salt at medium-low speed until combined, about 1 minute.

Beat in remaining ¾ cup sugar until combined, about 1 minute. Scrape beater and bowl well; add sour cream, lemon juice, and vanilla and beat at low speed until combined, about 1 minute.

Add egg yolks and beat at medium-low speed until thoroughly combined, about 1 minute. Scrape bowl and beater. Add whole eggs, two at a time, beating until thoroughly combined, about 30 seconds after each addition. Pour filling through a fine-mesh strainer set in large bowl, pressing against strainer with rubber spatula or back of a ladle to help filling pass through the strainer.

3. B rush sides of springform pan with remaining ½ Tablespoon melted butter.

Pour filling into crust and set aside for 10 minutes to allow air bubbles to rise to the top. Gently draw tines of a fork across the surface of the cake to pop air bubbles that have risen to surface.

4. W hen oven thermometer reads 200 degrees, bake cheesecake on the lower rack for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, remove cake from oven and use a toothpick to pierce any bubbles that have risen to surface. Return to oven and continue to bake until center registers 165 degrees, 2¼ to 2¾ hours longer. Remove cake from oven and increase oven temperature to 500 degrees.

5. W hen the oven is at 500 degrees, bake cheesecake on upper rack until the top is evenly browned, 4 to 12 minutes.

Let cool for 5 minutes; run a paring knife between cheesecake and side of springform pan. Let cheesecake cool until barely warm, 2½ to 3 hours. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate until cold and firmly set, at least 6 hours.

(Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days.)

6. T o unmold cheesecake, remove sides of the pan. Slide a thin metal spatula between crust and pan bottom to loosen, then slide cheesecake onto a serving plate. Let cheesecake stand at room temperature for about 30 minutes.

To slice, dip a sharp knife into very hot water and wipe dry between cuts. Serve.
