that wonderful, magical time of year again we call Christmas! It is absolutely my favorite holiday of all. And while I love all the trappings of the holiday: the decorations, the lights, the family gatherings—my absolute favorite part of the holiday is attending our Christmas Eve service with my family. Having been in publication since 2007 & 2005 respectively, Forsyth Family and sister publication Forsyth Woman thought it was time for a little facelift. Forsyth Woman Engaged led the charge with their new logo in November to produce one of its most beautiful covers yet. Soon after, our designers Laurie Dalton and Aron Daniels worked together to get to the variation you see now for FF & FW. Kudos to both of them for their tireless creativity month after month, and for always putting our best foot forward!

year in November, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, locallyowned retailers and boutiques across America celebrate their own unique holiday—“Small Business Saturday.” While we’re past November and into December, the “Shop Small” mindset is something we can embrace throughout the holiday season. It’s not just a mindset; it’s a movement.

American Express estimates that 68 cents of every dollar spent at a locally-owned business stays within the community, versus 43 cents of every dollar spent at a big-box store. It doesn’t take a degree in economics to understand how much that kind of math benefits everyone!

Plus, shopping local creates more jobs! In 2017, Forbes reported that for every $10 million spent at a local level, 57 jobs were created, versus only 14 jobs when that same amount was spent with Amazon.com. It adds stability to our communities when people are gainfully employed!

And shopping local is just fun! From the offbeat and whimsical to the unique and oneof-a-kind, small retailers are more likely to support other small businesses and artisans.

That opens up a tremendous opportunity to find unique and locally-made gifts.

If you’re one of those people for whom customer service is important, think small. Small business owners have a much more vested interest in making sure their customers are happy, versus big retail. After all, customers contribute to their livelihood. Making customers feel great is an important part of creating new customer loyalty and stimulating word-of-mouth recommendations.

For the environmentalists, shopping small makes sense regarding the environmental footprints we leave. With fewer transportation costs involved, retailers can offer better prices and “go green.” A double win!

Supporting local businesses is about neighbors helping neighbors. In a sense, it’s a “pay-it-forward” kind of action. When someone shops or dines at a locally-owned business, that business owner can hire people, who can then turn around and spend money locally for their families, and support local organizations.

It’s very tempting during the craziness of the holiday season simply to go online and click “Add to cart,” and let all your holiday gifts be delivered straight to your house.

But for small business owners, Internet shopping takes a tremendous toll on the small businesses within the community who are supporting Little League teams, schools, churches, and other local organi ations. There’s truly an economic benefit that comes from shopping locally and shopping small. Like a rock dropped in a still pond, the ripple effect is wide-reaching!

Besides—shopping is social! It’s a great time to spend with Mom, sisters, aunts, cousins, and girlfriends!

As the holiday shopping season begins, please shop at as many small, locally-owned businesses as possible…retail boutiques…local markets… local restaurants…local gas stations…the hundreds of businesses owned and operated by Forsyth County residents—your very neighbors.

Houston Ballet Stars Yuriko Kajiya and Connor Walsh to Take the Stage in UNCSA’s Acclaimed Production of “�e Nutcracker” Lone Star state will loan two of its brightest stars to North Carolina this year as guest dancers in the beloved UNCSA production of “The Nutcracker.” Houston Ballet principals Yuriko Kajiya and Connor Walsh will visit Winston-Salem to take on the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier Prince on Wednesday and Thursday, December 12 and 13.

A native of Japan, Kajiya is an incredibly accomplished dancer with a long list of accolades, including being a recipient of the famed Prix de Lausanne Scholarship in 2000.

She joined the American Ballet Theatre in 2001, and then the Houston Ballet in 2014. She was promoted to principal dancer later that same year. Walsh, hailing from nearby irginia, trained first under his mother, Constance Walsh.

He went on to study at several acclaimed ballet companies and joined the Houston Ballet in 2004, where he was quickly promoted to soloist in 2006 and swiftly to principal in 2007.

In 2015, along with fellow dancers in Houston, he founded REACH, a choreographic project that raises money for arts education in schools.

“We are particularly thrilled to offer two principal dancers from the Houston Ballet as guest dancers in our annual production of ‘The Nutcracker,’” said UNCSA Vice Chancellor of Strategic Communications Claire Machamer.

“For many years, UNCSA has recruited world-class guest artists to the stage at the Stevens Center to perform alongside our own incredibly talented students.”

“Yuriko and Connor are among America’s premier ballet dancers and will showcase their world-class technique and artistry in Winston-Salem. Seeing them is an opportunity not to miss,” UNCSA Dean of Dance Susan Jaffe. “They are not only sure to captivate our audiences on December 12 and 13 but also will inspire and teach our UNCSA students.”

The full performance schedule for the UNCSA production of The Nutcracker is: December 7, 8, and 12-15 at 7:30 p.m.; and December 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets for The Nutcracker are now available at the Stevens Center ox Office, by phone at (336) 721-1945 or online at uncsaevents.com.

BY CAROLYN S. PETERSON PHOTOS BY JON ERIC JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY the past 25 years, Darrell Poteat has worked at Piedmont Sheet Metal in Winston-Salem, NC, making custom ductwork for customers. In this day and time it’s hard to find people who enjoy what they do and love those they work for, but Darrell does both. “I’ve been here for a long time, and I have always felt like a part of the Cook family, the owners of Piedmont Sheet Metal. They are good people who care about their employees, and I like what I do. We build custom duct work for each job, which makes a difference in the efficiency of the systems we install. I also work with other metals, especially copper, to make custom chimney caps, as well as a few other things,” said Darrell.

For those who are unfamiliar with sheet metal products, a chimney cap is a covering for the top of a chimney, and it usually includes wire mesh, preventing animals from entering your home, keeping moisture out and protecting the roof from burning embers, which could start a house fire. Sometimes they need to be functional, and others may just be an added decoration to finish off a chimney. The ones that Darrell Poteat builds aren’t just functional, but architecturally pleasing to the eye. “Builders and homeowners come in with the dimensions, and we work together, so I get a feel of what they have in mind, then the magic begins! I come up with the design and which metal product is best and create yet another ‘masterpiece.’

Sometimes I use copper, but we have other options, too, that can work.

It just depends on the job,” Darrell commented. Darrell also uses copper to make lanterns and bird feeders. If it can be designed and made from metal, Darrell can do it. The sheet metal shop at Piedmont Sheet Metal is a busy place, making duct work for customers and a enjoying a steady business in chimney caps, but Darrell also gets to be a copper artisan on occasion, especially around the holidays.

Sometimes the ladies in the office have an idea of something they’d like me to make, so I get some copper or brass, usually, and see what I can come up with. I design bracelets made of hammered brass that look like a leaf, flowers that look like roses, tulips, and sunflowers, but by far the Christmas ornaments I make are the most popular. We sell them in the office to customers. a pattern and made it. They’ve been very popular,” Darrell noted. The copper ornaments and angel tree toppers give a tree the feeling of yesteryear, a holiday warmth of knowing that someone put time and love into making your tree look special for the holidays. Darrell has become quite the tool designer, too, because he can’t always find the exact tool, so he has to make the tool before he can make his creation.

“You just don’t always have what you need lying around when you are making a rose from copper or a tulip. The petals need to have a certain way they fan out and attach, so I had to design a way to make them look as natural as possible. A couple getting married outside used the metal tulips to line the aisle and placed a tea light candle in the middle of it. Then gave the tulips as gifts to the wedding party. I liked that idea,” commented Darrell.

The Canadian Brass may be the world’s most famous group of brass players. The five-member group was formed in 1970.

“Christmas by Candlelight Guided Tours: A Baking We Go!” also begins on Nov. 16, but it’s an evening program at 6:30 p.m.

This is an opportunity to swing a candle lantern, don an apron and do some real, hands-on baking: mixing, kneading, rolling and creating some of Salem’s more important holiday treats.

“Salem Night: Softly Night Is Sleeping” runs from 1-7 p.m. on Dec. 22. It’s an opportunity to slow down and visit the various displays and participate in a special candlelight evening throughout the town.

And the “2018 Winter Fair” starts the day after Christmas and runs through Dec. 29. Every day there will be special hands-on workshops and family activities throughout the town.

Wake Forest Lovefeast

“The Nutcracker”

Vivid sets, lush scores and intricate costumes have made UNC School of the Arts’ performance of “The Nutcracker” “nothing short of perfection,” according to the arts journal Classical Voice of North Carolina.

Performed at the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem, the 2018 performances run from Dec. 7-16. The shows on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 will showcase guest dancers Yuriko Kajiya as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Connor Walsh as the Cavalier Prince.

They are both principals with the Houston Ballet.

Tanglewood Festival of Lights

Beginning on Nov. 16 and running through Jan. 1, Tanglewood Park in Clemmons is transformed into a wonderland of snowflakes and magical holiday scenes. In its 27th year, the elaborate festival is over five miles long and has more than 100 displays – with more than one million LED lights.

The light festival has been named one of the Top 20 events in the Southeast and one of the Top 100 events in North America.

University Lovefeasts at Wait Chapel. It’s one of the largest Lovefeast services in the country. More than 2,100 Moravian buns and 90 gallons of Moravian coffee are served at each service to participants by dieners – German for servers.

Cirque de la Symphonie

Artists – aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers and strongmen – will be bringing a new production to perform with the Winston-Salem Symphony on Nov. 24-25.

County has its fair share of preschool programs, but Ardmore Baptist Preschool is doing things a little differently. After being a preschool since 1948, making it the oldest in Winston-Salem, they decided to take a new approach to the preschool experience.

Director Julie Sugg explains, “When I took the job as Director four years ago, a church member approached me and asked to me attend a Reggio Emilia Conference to learn more about this approach.

It was amazing. It opened my eyes to a whole new way to create a preschool environment. It just made sense. I knew it was exactly what we needed to do at our preschool.”

and express creativity. Through hands-on, interactive experiences, where learning and play are not separated, children will de ne their own interests and, in turn, begin to love learning. This allows them to grow socially, emotionally and intellectually. Each child is allowed to play a role in planning what they want to learn. Teachers observe students and serve as mentors and guides to make a unique learning experience for each classroom and child. They also nd creative ways to tie in the state-regulated guidelines for kindergarten readiness. This requires teachers who are lifelong learners and who love to research, enjoy staff development and are willing to learn along with their students. Ardmore Baptist Preschool values the staff development necessary with the Reggio Emilia approach, because they believe when you know better, you do better.

CONNECTING TO NATURE There is a strong connection to nature present in the classroom, as well as lots of opportunities to get outside and explore the natural world. The Reggio Emilia approach recognizes that the environment is also a teacher and being outside allows students to observe things they will want to learn more about. This is ever present at Ardmore Baptist Preschool. You will constantly see students outside, and you can’t help but notice how this affects learning in the classroom.

THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

WHAT IS REGGIO EMILIA? Reggio Emilia is a different approach to learning that values children and believes they are capable of constructing their own learning. There is no set curriculum because the heart of this experience is that every child has a hundred languages. In the classrooms of Ardmore Preschool you will nd a calm, relaxing environment.

There is very little arti cial lighting and everything you nd there has been placed with a purpose. Each room is designed to be on the level of the age group in it. You will also nd a very home-like environment, with pictures of family members and displays of art that the children choose, and authentic materials and tools of all kinds for the children to explore and create with. When teachers observe a learning interest within the group, they guide and mentor the children through it. Each classroom is centered on fostering children of all kinds, in an inclusive environment that teaches them important lifelong skills. They are encouraged to

be independent, creative, problem solvers who think outside the box. They learn to understand how to work together, while being respected for who they are. Parents are given weekly plans to update them about what is going on in the classroom and are encouraged to participate at any time.

CONNECTING TO THE CHURCH In addition to being a Reggio Emilia inspired school, they are a Christ-centered program that is a ministry of the church. They work to connect the children with the church by creating a crossover relationship to enhance the relationship- based element involved in the Reggio Emilia approach. The children also attend a weekly chapel where they are encouraged to explore the space and learn about God’s Love. They learn a simple Bible verse every week, too, that can be applied to their everyday life experience in a hands-on way.

THE CENTER FOR TRAUMA RESILIENT COMMUNITIES AT CROSSNORE

nfortunately, trauma happens.

Throughout our community and the world, people are exposed to adverse experiences that affect them for the rest of their lives. At Crossnore School & Children’s Home, they see the effects of trauma on a daily basis. But it isn’t just among the children that they are working with. Crossnore staff are also exposed to trauma. When doing the amazing work that they do to help children and families, they are also exposed to the stories of the children and the trauma that they have experienced. It causes secondary stress and can produce symptoms very similar to the symptoms of a person who has experienced the trauma personally.

About 15 years ago, Crossnore realized it was no longer enough to treat the child who arrived with the need for care, they had to start dealing with the trauma these children had experienced. In addition to caring for the physical needs of the children, Crossnore adopted a holistic approach of caring for the whole child.

This made a huge difference in the children, but the staff was now suffering in ways they had not before. Crossnore’s Chief Executive Of cer and the Center’s co-founder, Brett Loftis, commented, “Our staff was constantly absorbing the children’s trauma. They began to show secondary stress symptoms from repeatedly hearing the terrible things these children had been through. It was so important for us to be able to help these children heal, but we also needed to protect ourselves and our staff from burning out and feeling the effects of this physically and mentally.” What they

decided to do was to look for a way to provide trauma-informed care to the staff.

Research began on the format they would use to implement the care that was needed. They decided to use The Sanctuary Model® from Dr. Sandra Bloom. At the time, she was running the only unlocked psychiatric care unit in the country. The model addresses how chronic stress, adversity and trauma can in uence behavior and promote change in the way organizations, also in uenced by the same things, are affected. Twelve years ago, this model was put into place to help with the problems they were facing. The difference is undeniable. The staff at Crossnore is now experiencing lower rates of burnout, less mental and physical health problems and less staff turnover.

This really is all about adverse childhood experiences. Between 1995 and 1997 the CDC and Kaiser Permanente did a study on this topic. This study, known as “ACES,” studied over 17,000 people who were mostly white and college-educated.

By having them complete con dential surveys about their childhood experiences and current mental and physical health, a correlation was found between childhood trauma and lifelong mental and physical health issues. It also showed that childhood trauma affects people of all kinds, and that trauma is everywhere.

Knowing this information and seeing how The Sanctuary Model® could make a difference, Crossnore felt it was their responsibility to help communities and organizations become trauma-resilient.

This responsibility, partnered with a vision

of helping other organizations become trauma-resilient, became the Center For Trauma Resilient Communities.

The Center, which started about a year ago, was created to help end organizational toxic stress. Knowing what they know now, after seeing what has worked in their organization, Crossnore is on a mission to prepare organizations and their staff before toxic stress becomes an issue. Crossnore is one of only six organizations to achieve national certi cation three times from The Sanctuary Institute. Crossnore and the Center realize that there is a problem accessing affordable, quality training and the technical assistance necessary for support. The Center is lling the gap by providing all those things to hospitals, domestic violence organizations, early childhood education providers, churches and many other types of businesses and organizations. “We have hired the best trauma trainers in the country, all of whom have a specialization in coaching and training in trauma-informed care,” continued Loftis. “We can look at your organization and create a plan speci c to your needs, providing the necessary tools to achieve the best outcome for all.”

A Tale of Two Cities?

FAMILY SERVICES Winston-Salem and Forsyth County are thriving. The Wake Forest Innovation Quarter is bustling with start-ups, tech rms, the Wake Forest niversity Medical School, and events in Baily Park. Downtown is brimming with restaurants and attracting new residents.

Business 40 will soon become a safe and swift expressway, adorned with creative corridors.

And, Winston-Salem and Forsyth County are at or near the bottom of many national rankings: • Fourth from the bottom of all the counties in the country in economic mobility.

• 269th out of 274 cities in terms of racial and economic inclusion.

• The 16th highest rate of housing evictions among 100 mid-size cities.

• The highest rate of child food-insecurity in the country.

Can this tale of two cities be woven into a single story of shared prosperity?

While economic development is the essential driver, community-building organizations have a unique role to play in forging a sustainable community that provides opportunities for all its residents.

Family Services is one of the many community-building organizations (CBOs) that are working to create healthy, equitable communities. Our annual contribution to the well-being of the 10,000 families and children we serve is signi cant: • 619 children, ages 0 to 5, are learning the social and emotional skills that are necessary for school readiness and life; • 400 four-year-olds in our Head Start program, all of whom come from low-income homes, graduate ready for kindergarten • 93 percent of teachers participating in our Forsyth County School Readiness 34 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

Project report signi cant improvement in the behavior and self-regulation of their 3- and 4-year-old students • 80 percent of counseling clients make good to excellent progress on their goals • 96 percent of abused children served through our Child Advocacy Center do not experience a recurrence of abuse.

However, Family Services and other CBOs face challenges and threats to our capacity to do all that is needed—“all that is asked of us”—to build strong families and communities and contribute to the economic vitality of Forsyth County.

Are we overlooking the economic value of community-building organizations like Family Services?

Nationwide, human services CBOs bene t one in ve Americans collectively, employ more than 3 million Americans, and generate more than $200 billion in economic activity annually.

While human services CBOs are providing clear value today, our potential is much greater. Yet, against the backdrop of an increasing need for agencies like Family Services—driven by income inequality, lagging student achievement, an aging population, and the challenge of the opioid epidemic the nancial stability of the human services sector is deeply threatened.

Recent studies show that too many CBOs operate under persistent de cits, have few or no nancial reserves, and lack access to capital to invest in technology and modern data-sharing tools. Addressing these complex and interrelated challenges requires a comprehensive response.

That’s why we continue to work with community partners to strengthen Family Services’ capacity for innovation and adapt to meet evolving needs through our core program areas: counseling,

family safety, and child development. We are pursuing community-wide initiatives to expand Pre-K programs and prevent family violence.

Community change is dependent upon community engagement.

We are also committed to ensuring that the human services sector in Forsyth County has the resources needed to make our rankings on economic mobility, social inclusion, housing stability, and childhood well-being the rival of any city in the country.

That’s why we’re also committed to building stronger relationships with public and private funders who recognize the importance of the capacity for innovation and are eager to invest in it.

Our “Raising Every Child” capital campaign, for example, addresses Forsyth County’s pressing needs of the most vulnerable population, children from birth to age 5. Led by community volunteers, the $3.75 million campaign will improve the physical, social and emotional health of 1,500 young children annually. Bene ting children, families and preschool teachers, “Raising Every Child” contributes to building a better future for our community.

More than $3.2 million, or 88%, of the goal has been raised from community foundations, businesses and private donors. This response to “Raising Every Child” gives us hope as we turn to the community to reach our goal and help close the opportunity gap a little more— writing a tale of a singular city in which every child and family can thrive.

We are grateful to the community and many sustaining partners who work with us each year to create a better future for all of us.

Dr. Harold C. Pollard, III Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates

A Legacy of Caring

BY CAROLYN S. PETERSON of us hope that when our time on earth comes to an end, in some way our life will have made a difference; that our absence means almost as much as our presence. For those who knew Dr. Harold C. Pollard, III, of Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates—family, friends, colleagues, and patients, his presence was felt with every encounter. Since his passing on November 3rd, 2017, those lives that Dr. Pollard impacted reach far and wide, and the year since his passing has brought the difference he made in others’ lives to the forefront.

A Family Man, First and Foremost Anyone who met Dr. Pollard would soon learn that while he loved what he did, he was rst and foremost a husband to wife Louise and a father to his three daughters, Tucker, Elizabeth and Nell. Dr. Pollard also had three sons-in-law whom he thought the world of, and ten grandchildren. The Pollard daughters grew up watching their dad be called away to deliver babies at all hours of the day and night, realizing at a very young age, Dr. Pollard loved being a physician. Nell Pollard Johnson, inspired by her dad, became a physician, choosing the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology, beginning her practice alongside her dad at Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates. Dr. Pollard also had an extended family of colleagues and patients that grew over the years.

“Living the Dream” For almost 40 years, Dr. Harold Pollard, III, was a part of Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates, beloved by his colleagues and patients alike; but few had the honor of both working with Dr. Pollard and also being a family friend outside of the of ce. Kathy Poole, an LPN for 31 years at Lyndhurst, recalls her time with Dr. Pollard.

“In my 31 years at Lyndhurst, 28 of those were spent working with Dr. Pollard and his patients. Thinking about Dr. Pollard brings a smile to my face because he truly made the most of life and made things fun. He worked hard, seeing many patients a day, but he would add a little something every day to keep us smiling; he was a joy to work with and loved his patients, and they loved him. Dr. Pollard could relate to anyone and was easy to talk to, taking the time to get to know his patients. It didn’t matter that he was a wellknown and respected physician, he never regarded himself as anything other than a friend to those he worked with and to his patients. I decided to go back to school to become an LPN, and I needed to pass some math courses, and Dr. Pollard jumped at the chance to get me up to speed. We’d come in early before the of ce opened, and he worked with me on the weekends to make sure I passed. He was so con dent in me that his comment was, “ f you were a racehorse, ’d bet on you!” also went to a few concerts with Dr. Pollard, his wife and once with daughter, Tucker. We were at a Bob Dylan concert when Dr. Pollard disappeared, and as we looked around the massive crowd, we found him in the highest area of the coliseum dancing with some young kids. He truly made the most of every day and every part of his life. Even though it’s been a year, I’m not sure I’ve truly dealt with the loss; I tell myself he’s on vacation to keep from thinking that he’s not coming back,” Kathy admitted.

“I’ve worked as Dr. Pollard’s Clerical Assistant for six years, and the past three years, I was his Medical Assistant. He was one of the rst ones in the building every morning, and I would hear him coming down the hall whistling, so excited to get his day started seeing his patients. No matter how good or bad the day was, he always made sure to tell us how great we were. There was no one quite like him,” recalled Lauren.

Mirla remembers Dr. Pollard’s positivity and what he meant to his patients. “Dr. Pollard would go above and beyond for his patients. He would call a patient after hours to check on them and follow up on something they had discussed that day, giving them great peace of mind and reassurance. He was a big burst of energy and positivity; an inspiration to us all to get up and do what we love every day,” Mirla stated.

For Dr. Brad Jacobs, throughout his medical career, Dr. Pollard had many roles.

“I had the pleasure of working with Harold in the capacity of a Resident, junior partner, and partner over the last 20 years. He was a mentor, colleague, friend and second father to me. I remember going out to lunch with Harold, and you knew that you would bump into no less than 10-15 people who wanted to shake his hand, hug his neck or chat; he had a magnetic quality about him, and he knew no stranger.

Meals often turned into mentoring meetings, and early on he took me under his wing. He was an analytical person who balanced Lyndhurst’s core culture and mission with the present trends in healthcare; everything was done with the patient in mind. Harold guided our practice successfully as President for over 20 years; Harold was excellent at just about everything he did. We were amazed at his stamina and his competitiveness, which came out during of ce trivia contests and on the tennis court.

When Harold was asked, ‘How are you?’ his reply was, ‘Living the dream,’ and he left no doubt he did just that,” recalled Dr. Jacobs.

Beyond his colleagues Dr. Pollard’s passion for his patients and love of what he did was evident. He made each patient feel as if they were the only one he was seeing that day.

Bartlett Bassett, mother of ve, had known Dr. Pollard and his family since she was a young girl, and he had been her physician over the years, delivering two of her children.

Lauren Wall and Mirla Gomez Dorville, Medical Assistants, worked with Dr. Pollard in different capacities, but each has fond memories.

“After living away for several years, I moved back to Winston-Salem, NC, in 1997, and Dr. Pollard delivered my two girls. Elizabeth, his middle daughter, had never seen him deliver a baby and she was in the room when my daughter, McKinley, was born. Elizabeth is her Godmother. Dr. Pollard was special, and he made you feel special no matter who you were. He loved people from all walks of life and knew how to make them feel important and genuinely cared for,” recounted Bartlett.

Pushing On to Be the Best Dr. Jacobs summed up the thoughts of friends, family, and colleagues and how Dr. Pollard’s legacy of caring will continue at Lyndhurst, “Words and stories can only capture a tiny piece of the force that was Harold Pollard.

His in uence on our Lyndhurst Family is immeasurable. He was our patriarch; the physical and emotional champion of

the practice. We certainly miss him terribly, but will do our best to balance that with the passion and purpose that he exempli ed for 40 years.”

(Hopefully ) And please, do not forget the holiday movie watching! For many of us, sitting down with friends and family to watch a beloved classic or modern Christmas tale, has become as much of a tradition as mistletoe and holly. And with good reason! From deep, emotional tearjerkers to silly, special effects-laden lms, there really is something about a holiday movie that warms the heart. With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! bring a 35-year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers and writers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

Christmas Nostalgia What is nostalgia?

It is an emotional state of longing for the past that cuts across cultures, time periods, and ages. This sentimental desire to return to a former time and place (whether in thought or in fact), perceived to be better or simpler, can be triggered by sights, smells, sounds, and tastes. A particular song can instantly transport you to a childhood home, or a familiar smell like baked apple pies can place you back in Grandma’s kitchen in a split second.

Photos of the “good ole days” posted on Facebook (Throwback Thursdays) evidence the power of nostalgia and the human need for belonging, security, and purpose.

Why does nostalgia peak around Christmas?

We de ne ourselves in part by how

connected we are to others, and these relationships are heightened by nostalgia—which helps explain why commercials, billboards, and all forms of marketing around the holidays center on relationships. People travel great distances and make signi cant sacri ces in order to be with those they love on Christmas. And if it is not possible to be present, nostalgic memories can be a psychological substitute for the real thing, as in the quintessential holiday nostalgic song “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Little known fact: In December 1965, after having completed the longest orbit around earth to date, .S. astronauts requested that NASA pipe in this Bing Crosby classic.

Janet and Allan Ahlberg most assuredly had a fabulous time creating this wildly imaginative, rhyming multigenre text! As The Jolly Christmas Postman makes his rounds on Christmas Eve, he delivers letters, postcards, board games and more to/ from beloved fairytale and nursery rhyme characters. At the end of his route, stranded in the snow and darkness, he receives a magical surprise. This book is a gem lled with humor, gorgeous illustrations, and favorite childhood characters. With all of the technology available today (e.g., text messages, e-mails, tweets, etc.), it is refreshing to return to a time when people communicated by handwritten letters, delivered to your home by a postman you knew by name.

Caldecott medalist Peter Spier details the preparations for, celebration of, and aftermath of, Christmas in this classic wordless picture book. From making cards, visiting Santa at the mall, purchasing a wreath, decorating the tree, and shopping for food, Spier showcases the “behind the scenes” work required for the perfect Christmas. He proves that a picture is worth a thousand words, as readers take in every detail of the excitement of Christmas Day Eve, from the bustle of activity early morning to eating dinner with the extended family. The illustrations of the “other side” of Christmas Day are spot on, too—dirty dishes in the kitchen sink, tired parents amid the clutter after the children are in bed, piles of trash at the street corner, empty tree lots, and return lines at the mall. Peter Spier’s Christmas is a fabulous holiday feast for the eyes!

Christmas Timeline Spier’s Christmas shows in great detail the before, during, and after Christmas Day celebration of one New England family. While there may be many similarities between the experiences depicted in the illustrations and your family’s holiday traditions, there are likely important differences (even if very subtle) that make what happens at your home unique.

Create a timeline in words or illustrations (or a combination) that outlines how your family enjoys the holiday from beginning to end. For example the Christmas tree. Do you put up a Christmas tree s it arti cial or real f it is real, do you trek to the mountains to cut it down or go to a tree lot near your home? When do you put up the tree—a month before Christmas Day? A week? The night before? Think about all traditions surrounding Christmas and put them in order of occurrence on the timeline.

Out & About in Winston-Salem with Senior Services’ Evening for Alzheimer’s Care

Friday, October 26th, more than 250 guests attended the 18th-annual Evening for Alzheimer’s Care at Senior Services on Shorefair Drive. This event was created to bene t Senior Services’ Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center.

The evening’s honorary chairs were Betty and Jim Brewer. Hunter and Sandlin Douglas and Angie and Everette Murphy were the evening’s event co-chairs. Heading the list of sponsors were the fundraiser’s presenting sponsor, BB&T, and Mr. and Mrs. Toby W. Robertson and Wake Forest Baptist Health, the tent sponsors. Among the other top sponsors were Reynolds American, Arbor Acres, and WestRock. The generosity of these and many other business sponsors and individual patrons and donors, along with the time invested by dedicated committee volunteers, made the evening possible.

The event wouldn’t have been the same without entertainment by Kevin Douthit on the keyboard.

Guests mingled while enjoying the music and perusing the wonderful variety of the more than 300 silent auction items donated by generous local businesses and individuals. Five Loaves topped off the occasion with a buffet featuring, as entrees, salmon piccata and grilled Angus ank steak. A salad of mixed greens, two vegetable choices and assorted breads and petite desserts rounded out the menu.

“This is a special fundraiser,” said Leigh Anne Groves, Senior Services’ Chief Development Of cer, “both because of the extraordinary level of community support and because of the signi cance of the cause. By coming together for this event, now each fall for 18 years, businesses and individuals have been making sure that no one needing the services of the Williams Center is turned away because of an inability to pay.

It’s not only a fun evening, it’s also an important one—both for the center and the community it serves.”

Hearts & Arrows Photography will photograph your little one on Santa’s lap, and the image will be emailed to you. Prints will also be available for purchase on site. Pre-registration required for both children and adults: The cost is $18 per person for Kaleideum members and $20 for non-members.

Starting December 27, the family can take part in Música, Música, Maximo Música at Kaleideum North. Join Maximo, accompanied by gatito Mandito y las hermanas del alma, as he discovers the rhythms of life and spreads the sound! This Theatre for the Very Young production, written by Christina Quintana and directed by Rebecca Cunningham, is for ages birth to 3. Cost is $5+ tax per person for members and $7+ tax per person for non-members. Museum admission is not included. Check website for showtimes and tickets.

Then, on Friday, December 7, Kaleideum North will host its annual Festive Family Friday from 4:30-8:30 pm. Festive Family Friday will include live music, Animal Zone, holiday crafts, festive Planetarium shows, and special guests … including Santa!

Admission is $3 (+tax) per person for both members and nonmembers. The inclement weather date for this event is December 14.

Get messy and create with your child during the Drop-In Gingerbread House Workshops at Kaleideum Downtown.

Children (and caregivers) can build their houses with mini milk cartons, graham crackers, icing, and a variety of sweet treats.

The cost per house is $6.50 (+ tax). Museum admission not included, but it is required. These workshops will take place on Wednesday, December 12, from 1-4 pm and on Saturday, December 22, from 10 am-1 pm.

eminiscing brings to mind a time when children rode bikes, played soccer or basketball with neighbors, and built forts without parental supervision.

Before dusk, mothers called out a child’s name, and were answered by a young voice seconds later. It was time when families talked about their day while eating a meal, and didn’t worry whether the answering machine blinked, or if calls went unanswered. Meals in those days were not to be disrupted. Evenings brought families together to watch television or assist in the task of washing dishes or folding laundry.

Technology has become an integral part of our lives. Day and night, phones are a hand’s-reach away. Parents should be aware that today’s children live in a vastly different environment.

• Distraction is a new norm.

• In educational writing assignments and when reading literature, imagination is now optional, if not inessential.

• GPS, Internet search engines, and apps such as “Talk to Text” and verbal commands have altered the need to use high-order processing skills that assist critical thinking, problem-solving, and memory.

Changing the Family Structure The word “change” requires a different mindset and acclimating to new concepts. Going along with the routine, younger children often will follow the plan and even take it one step farther and hold parents accountable. Pre-teens and teenagers, on the other hand, may resist the idea of stepping away from technology, yet they appreciate the ability to contribute to new family expectations.

Ideas to Implement Young children, who do not possess a phone, may ask for one only because they, too, want to be part of the technological world. Without such devices, children will seek to occupy their time some other way, whether it is playing video games, watching television or YouTube Videos.

Change is possible with the following ideas: REQ RED MOVEMENT: The solution is not to ban technology, but to require movement.

Grab the dog lead and encourage your children to take a walk around the neighborhood, or start family bike rides. Families also can pursue physical activities at home, or at a nearby park to instill better health habits and promote togetherness.

Allow children to bring their phones. It is to be hoped that one day they will leave them behind.

OPEN COMM N CAT ON: The de nition of openness and availability needs to change. Busy parents can create times in the late evening and before bed to talk, share, and communicate personal questions or advice. Reading a book together or separately and discussing it often helps to broach challenging topics. Open discussions allow parents to understand their child’s thought processes and other ideas.

PROMOTING SOCIALIZATION: Dance, athletics, leadership opportunities, or a school-sponsored extracurricular activity are key ideas. Any experience that eliminates the need for technology allows children and teens to listen, participate, share thoughts, make decisions, and form friendships.

Bridging the Holiday Gap:

Tips for Keeping Your Child Engaged in Academics

is hard to believe, but the holidays are officially here! With the decorations going up, the holiday music everywhere you go, and the chill in the air, many are making travel plans, and all of our children are counting down the days until winter break. While the winter break is certainly welcomed by children and families, it is important for children not to completely ignore the academic routine they have been accustomed to since August.

To help bridge the holiday gap, here are some tips for keeping your child engaged in academics over the winter break Maintain Routine (As Much As Possible): While sleeping in is certainly almost guaranteed (at least for the middle- and high school-aged students), it is important to maintain some sense of daily routine for all children, so that they do not become disoriented when it is time to head back to school in anuary. While daily plans can often be hard to predict during the winter break, try maintaining nighttime routines bedtimes as well as possible. This can often be the most difficult part for students to get back into when anuary rolls around, so maintaining bedtime routines is a good way to help keep their sleep schedule on track.

Communicate with Teachers: efore winter break arrives, reach out to your child’s teacher(s) to get an idea of any skills they could work on over winter break (math facts, sight words, novel reading, make-up work, etc.). Teachers may be willing to provide websites they use in school, apps that can be downloaded, or worksheets for practice. First quarter report cards have gone out at this point,

so take a look at any grades that may reveal struggling or areas for improvement mentioned there. Even if your child has straight A’s, it is important to keep him or her engaged over the break as well, so extra practice on daily skills will most definitely be beneficial.

Provide a Daily School “To-Do” List: After you have assessed what your child can do for extra practice, create a daily school to do list, or provide a block of time each day when your child needs to be working on school-related activities.

This can be as short as an hour or a few times spread out throughout the day.

Some of this time could be spent working during long car rides or plane travel, right after breakfast, while dinner is being prepared, etc.

Consider providing your child with a winter break journal. ave them keep a daily journal about what they do each day over winter break. For younger students, this may include one to two sentences with a picture, and for older students, a paragraph or a page about what they have done each day. Not only is this great writing practice, it certainly becomes a keepsake for parents as the years pass.

Keep the Fortnite/Gaming to a Limit: The Fortnite obsession is still very much the trend, and it can be assumed that many students are viewing the oncoming winter break as an opportunity for unlimited access to their favorite game of choice. While there certainly needs to be a fair amount of fun and down time over winter break, the gaming and screen time should have time restraints. Research has shown the long-term damage that can be done, and the addictive-like behaviors

children can show, as a result of too much screen time and online video game time.

This is especially true for young students and those with attention deficit disorders or language-based learning differences.

While children may enjoy the escape and break from reality they find in games like Fortnite or inecraft, and while this type of game certainly does encourage creative and technical development, they can also hinder children from other important opportunities for development, especially socially. uch of the holiday season and winter break involves family time, travel, and fun outings. Encourage your child to disengage from the devices and be present in the moment. While a little screen time certainly won’t hurt, and may be necessary at times, keep strict time limits on the amount of time per day your child has access to their video game screen or other electronic devices.

Make Memories: Above all else, prioriti e making memories. The memories that are made through social interaction will far outlive the ones involving a screen. Even if your family enjoys a more low-key winter break spent relaxing at home, make memories through cooking dinner together, baking cookies, playing outside, reading together, or catching up with friends and neighbors.

There are learning opportunities available in most moments, be they using measurements to bake cookies, budgeting for a shopping trip, reading new books, deciphering directions for putting together a new toy, or even taking the time to learn a new hobby or trade—find these moments and make the most of them.

These moments are precious; be sure to be in the moment for as many of them as you can.

The Changing Tides of the Holidays so much you learn as you grow old, especially when you’re a parent. The holidays are one example of how things constantly change over time. When you’re a child, Christmas is a time of excitement, surprise, wonder, and imagination. As the years pass, you learn what the magic of Christmas is all about. To borrow a line from The Polar Express, you stop hearing the bell ring, and it loses some of the luster it once had. It’s not bad, but it is different when that happens. nfortunately, today that happens a lot faster than it did in my day.

You begin to hear the bell once more when you become a parent, only it’s not on Christmas Eve, it’s on Christmas Day, when you see the bright smiles on the faces of your children and the jubilant expressions as they marvel in what Santa left for them under the tree. Those are good times indeed. ut then your children grow older, and they stop hearing the bell ring.

Those anxious Christmas Eves, making cookies for Santa and spreading reindeer food, are no longer new. Their interests are more into what their friends are doing that evening. Christmas day is still exciting, but in a much different way with a different slant on the reactions.

This can be difficult on parents at first, but you can’t blame them for that. When your children are small, they love everything they get. As they grow into teenagers, they learn to not be as excited about every little thing, even perhaps to the point of being particular. To parents who had grown used to the excited responses of their children’s early days, this comes as quite a shock. ut, never fear, it’s just part of the growing process. Children feel they must tone down their excitement now that they’re almost adults, and this understatement comes off as more mature to them. Then, as the years pass and they get older still, they learn a portion of what life is about. They experience the struggles and sacrifices of life, and having to earn what you get, along with the value not only of things, but also of how

much it means when another person thinks enough of you to get you something special for this very special occasion.

They still don’t hear the bell, but they’re beginning to have a more complete understanding of what this season is really about. When the day comes and they marry and have children themselves, they’ll begin to hear the bell ring once again.

It’s all part of the cycle of life. All part of what age gives you to experience, enjoy, and ultimately accept. I’ve learned that family si e, contrary to what all the holiday movies express, is not as important as what the family shares together. Oh, it’s nice to have a large family who can get together during the holidays and celebrate, but that, too, can have a stressful component to it. I’ve learned small families can have just as much fun and joy this time of year. The key, I feel, is in the traditions. Whether it’s long-standing family rituals that children loved when they were young, lost interest in when they became teens, but then found joy in all over again when they became full-fledged adults; or, new ones that you create that better fit the family as it is now. Yes, traditions can bring people together, give you something to look forward to year after year, and anticipate with your own level of excitement. That’s always been something special for me and my family. And it makes me proud that my children appreciate these traditions and fully comprehend their value to our family.

So whether your family is large or small, filled with young ones, or teens and adults, everyone can find joy in their heart this time of year. After all, we’re celebrating the birth of the One who came to save us. We all have our own traditions with regard to how we honor this occasion, and that’s part of what makes each family unique and special. ay you all have a wonderful holiday season, a erry Christmas and appy anukkah, and in your own way, may you hear the bell ring once more.

it again! Do you ever say that when someone finishes reading your favorite story to you? You don’t want it to end, so you say, Read it again!

Please? Pretty please?

The Christmas story is like that. It’s not enough to hear the story of esus only on Christmas Day. Yes, it’s the day we celebrate the baby esus being born in a barn, but the story doesn’t end there. e grew up just like you’re growing up. e learned new things just like you’re learning new things. e was happy, he was sad, he did good things, he got in trouble—just like you! The story doesn’t end there, of course. e died, but then he came back to life again. esus is the Christmas story, and he’s also the Easter story! esus isn’t like a plastic angel on top of the decorated tree. When the Christmas season is over, we shouldn’t put him in a box in the basement with the other decorations. e isn’t like the Easter bunny, either. esus is REA . We need to learn about his whole life.

What did he do? Why did he do those things? We need to know that he died. If he’s God, how could he die? Why did he die? We need to know that he came back to life again. ow is that possible? What does that mean?

As we get to know esus better, we grow to love him more and more. The ible tells us to ove the ord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength ( ark 12 30). Since we can’t see esus, how do we do that? We can think about him every day. As the words at the top of this page say, we write his words in our heart. That means we believe and remember what the ible says. isten in church and Sunday school. Ask questions.

Devotion: Ebenezer WHO?

BY TAMI RUMFELT old hymn Come Thou Fount contains a line which has always confused me. It goes, ere I raise my Ebene er.

What’s an Ebene er? Are we talking about the old tightwad from A Christmas Carol?

So, I did a little digging and it turns out that the word Ebene er is found in the ible in 1st Samuel, Chapter 7. Samuel was a prophet and leader of the Israelites during a time of great tribulation for the ews, much of it brought on by their own disobedience. e gathered his people and told them to give up their false gods and sincerely repent for straying from the ord. The people prayed and fasted and Samuel asked the ord to restore and protect them.

The Philistines, who were the Israelites arch-enemies, found out that all of Israel was gathered in one place in prayer and figured that was a good time to launch an attack. owever, God protected the Israelites and divinely intervened on their behalf, keeping is people safe.

So no one would forget God’s miraculous intervention, Samuel erected a large stone at the place where all of this happened. e named the stone Ebene er, which means Stone of elp, as a reminder that ord always helps his people. ow has the ord helped you? Was there a financial blessing that came along at just the right time? aybe it was the way e protected you from harm or healed an illness. Or, perhaps it was is peace and presence you clearly felt in a time of trouble. I’d encourage you to learn from Samuel and think of ways you might raise an Ebene er of your own to mark the occasion. It could be as simple as keeping a prayer journal, writing a poem, planting a tree or painting a picture. y doing so, the next time life gets tough, you’ll have a reminder of God’s neverending faithfulness.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas it’s the ost Wonderful Time of the Year, Christmas can also the most stressful time of the year for many of us. We all keep pretty busy schedules yearround and the oliday season can often add a heap of new obligations and responsibilities on top of days that were already plenty full. We long for a time of peace and joy, celebrating the birth of esus with family and friends, but all too often, we are too busy and stressed to really soak in the reason for the season.

Now, try to imagine how stressful the olidays might be for your pastor. e and his family deal with the same Christmas chaos that many of us do, and then there are countless church activities they are expected to lead, or at least attend, throughout the season. On top of that, many people in his congregation are struggling with anxiety and depression that often surfaces during the olidays, so the need for pastoral counseling may increase as well. Finding time to quietly celebrate Christmas with his own family is a challenge, to say the least.

As you are dealing with the extra work and stress that the olidays may bring, try to remember your pastor and his family are struggling, too. As you pray for peace, rest and rejuvenation for yourself, include them in your prayers, as well.

Finally, betheone to remind the people you go to church with that your pastor and his family also deserve a erry Christmas, and find ways to work together to lighten his load this Christmas season.

Amazing Faith

owever, because we are hard to impress, we also tend to be cynical and doubtful. And there’s simply no room for doubt when it comes to faith.

Is it possible to ama e esus? After all, e is God in human form and fully omniscient. e knows our every thought and every word before we even speak (Psalm 139). You’d think there would be no room for surprises.

We are certainly immune to them. Our world is inundated with Photoshop and special effects, and we’re used to lightning-fast service, from our food to our Internet speed, leaving little room for ama ement in our lives.

esus told the disciples, “O you of little faith.” ( atthew 2 ). ike the disciples, we look at our storms and assume they are too big for God. We see our problems as insurmountable. We make our issues more powerful than the all-powerful esus Christ.

owever, atthew -13 tells us a story of a faith so big and bold, that it warranted esus’ ama ement.

A Roman Centurion went to esus to ask im to heal his servant. When esus said e would go to the man’s home, the Centurion surprised esus and said no. e told esus, ord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.

At these words, the ible tells us that esus marveled.

In verse 10, esus says, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.”

The extraordinary faith of the Roman Centurion continues to ama e. This is the faith esus wants us to demonstrate. The ama ing kind of faith that makes all things possible through esus Christ (Philippians 4 13).

What kind of incredible wonders could we enjoy if we adopted the faith of a Roman Centurion? An ama ing faith that empowers us confidently to call on esus to work in our lives, fully trusting in is ability to handle things.

Scripture tells us that God wants to lavish good things on is children. esus says in atthew 7 11, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” ut asking requires faith that God will answer. And then, trusting in whatever answer our eavenly Father gives us.

The Roman Centurion’s faith was rewarded when esus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.”

If we’re going to tell our mountain how big our God is, we must first believe it ourselves.

And by doing so, we give esus the opportunity to marvel at ama ing faith in action.

We are usually eager to be reacquainted with cherished possessions only enjoyed during the season of Christmas. During the process of unearthing each carefully wrapped item, specific places and beloved people call forth the stories out of a fro en remembrance. Individual ornaments, perhaps a porcelain hand-painted tree, or any number of decorations, bring our living and departed loved ones closer. As the need to remember the past crosses into the present, verbal stories are not enough.

Journaling With the ease of technology, the process of keeping a journal no longer requires bound notebooks or the need to write daily. Through word documents—perhaps password protected—or through an e-mail account, a journal entry can be a reminder of a special event, occasion, or a great time spent together. Grandparents could begin right now documenting a journal of the family events and accomplished milestones. Imagine the moment when the journal is presented and read!

The known stories keep the members of the family alive. It is a life-long endeavor, which requires reaching out to distant relatives to collect information, written stories, and pictures. The task is often similar to finding a needle in a haystack; yet, discovering the tiniest pu le pieces is indeed thrilling.

In this age of Pinterest and DIY gurus, many people strive to make homemade gifts, but struggle with finding ones they can have their children do for relatives and other loved ones. elow are a few tried and true ideas that kids of most ages can do with varying amounts of adult supervision.

Homemade Body Scrub: ix together the following ingredients 1 cup granulated sugar -½ cup coconut oil, depending on preference drops essential oil Choose the oil based on what you know of the person receiving the gift. If they love floral scents, go with rose or lavender, or another floral scent. If they prefer something woodsy, try a lavender and cedar mix. When this is all mixed up in a mixing bowl, put into a ason jar. Try using a smaller squatter si e to make the contents easier to get out, and make it a set of 2-3 different scrubs with different scents. Decorate the top of the jar with a label naming the scent

and calling it out as a body scrub. If you feel like getting fancy, you can even add a small wooden applicator on a piece of twine around the lid base.

Decorated Coffee Cups: Start with a plain coffee mug; these can easily and cheaply be found at most stores. Decorate the mug with a plain Sharpie however you want! This is a great way for the kids to get really creative. aking sure to sign it on the bottom with the name of the artist as well as the year it was made, set the design into the oven on 3 0 degrees for 30 minutes. Place into it a decorated plastic bag filled with hot chocolate and mini-marshmallows, with a note advising the recipient that it is hand-wash only.

Stenciled Serving Tray: sing either individual letter stickers or a vinyl cutter, design the body of the serving tray with a quote or saying. If using a vinyl cutter, you can get extra creative and add in some decorative touches. Spray paint on top of the letters, making sure to get the correct type of spray paint, depending on whether you are using a wood or plastic tray. Peel off the design when almost completely dry, then finish with acrylic sealing spray when completely dry.

If you want to get fancy, you can even pick up a mat to give it a more finished, professional look. ake sure to have the kids sign it, and write the child’s name and year it was made on the back for posterity.

Photo Coasters: Find and print out pictures that you love of your family, and some of your family with the recipient of the gift if possible.

Cut these down so that they end about in on all sides from the edges of the coaster base. You can use either tiles from a hardware store or blank coasters from a craft store. It is often cheaper to get tiles from a hardware store, but you’ll need to glue some type of felt on the underside or add felt circles meant for the bottoms of furniture to keep the coasters from scratching up your table surfaces. Attach the photographs to the coasters with a few layers of mod podge (following the instructions on the bottle) and finish off with some acrylic sealing spray to protect the photos.

A New Motivation to Stay Fit

During the Holidays

absolutely love the holidays, and our family has great traditions like baking cookies and decorating the tree. ut, with a young child and both my husband and me in busy jobs, things also can get a bit hectic, and I find myself thrown off my regular fitness and healthy living routines.

Fortunately, we’re adding a new holiday tradition this year, called Santa’s Showdown, a familyfriendly, 2. -mile race on Sunday, December 9th, in downtown ewisville, just before the start of the popular ewisville Christmas Parade. y four-year-old son, Caden, is excited to show off his super-fast speed and my husband and I are happy to have a fitness goal for the entire family that incorporates a fun, holiday theme. For those of you whose families love a challenge, this race also includes a unique competition that may rival Dirty Santa gift exchanges. ere’s what you need to know to get started

The Race: “Santa’s Showdown” Santa’s Showdown is the perfect distance for my family—just long enough to be a challenge, but short and flat enough for everyone, especially if you’re using a jogging stroller. The race follows the parade route, so you can count on plenty of cheering crowds already lining the street to keep your spirits high.

As part of race registration, each runner will be randomly assigned to one of two teams —the Elves and the Reindeer. When you pick up your packet, you’ll receive a holiday-themed, elf or reindeer headband and a specially designed T-shirt for your team to be worn on race day. Race organi ers are encouraging all participants to get festive with their running attire, so I may add on some jingle bells or antler headgear. Adding to the fun will be the cheering crowds that always gather along the parade route.

Start Your Holiday Fitness Tradition The timing of Santa’s Showdown is the perfect motivation to eat healthily and get in shape amid the holiday celebrations. I’m also planning to organi e a few family-focused walks or runs in the weeks leading up to the race. It’s the perfect opportunity for active family time.

Although I will confess to being a big fan of the New Year’s resolutions, the Showdown is going to jumpstart my fitness routine a few weeks early, so that’s another plus. I’d love to be more active heading into the holidays than feeling like I’m playing catch up in anuary.

Running Helps Our Community Santa’s Showdown is not just a fun event for the whole family; it also is making a big difference in our community. Race proceeds will benefit the ewisville Civic Club and the nonprofit organi ation I now work for, Winston-Salem-based IF Solutions, the largest employer of people who are blind in the country.

An Antagonist Impacted by Christmas Past, Present, and Future

M

iserly, cantankerous, and self-absorbed could be the fundmental values of the perfect antagonist in literature.

The first scene may illustrate his nature and appearance, imbuing the reader with a feeling of justified dislike. e may speak in a condescending voice and display a lack of sympathy for all minor characters. As scenes unfold, the hero and the adversary usually mirror opposing characteristics and goals, evoking in the reader contrasting emotions.

The adversary archetype is rarely overpowering. e often possesses a fatal flaw, revealing a ray of hope to prefigure the hopeful moment when good will overcome evil, should the antagonist come to feel remorse.

In some tales, containing scenes similar to those of kindness describing the hero, the adversary, too, has his own story to tell. It is his one spark of humanity, a transparent window to reveal the curious answer explaining what made those initial values change so drastically. e must face his ghosts of the past, which then presents a glimmer of hope. It is the main compelling reason the reader eagerly turns page after page. ow often in literature do we find a unique character that changes our emotion from dislike to love? Among all the books, which one would you select on a wintry day in December? ere is a recall of the character of Scrooge to allow him to tell the heartaches and problems leading to the climax of adventure and the solution.

Scrooge. The name connects to symbolism portraying characteristics opposite to Christmas. Anger versus the inner warmth created by light and happiness. Isolation versus the gatherings filled with laughter, embracing, and song. In the text, he is described as, rd nd sh r s nt ro h h no steel h d e er stru out enerous fire se ret nd sel ont ned nd solitary as an oyster. He carried his own low temperature always about with him.” What could make a person possess such a lack of emotional warmth and openly display bitter unfriendliness?

In the real world, his character, similar to that of every misunderstood person, is missing a backstory. It happens frequently. A person is discussed through whispered conversation and exaggerated stories. The imagination of listeners will undeniably create fixed opinions from their

emotions, which leads to unyielding hearts; yet, one side is never the complete story.

While it is to be hoped the Christmas spirit lives within each of us, we are among those who cannot face the season without reliving the past, the present, and what is to come. For Ebene er, these time periods arrive as protagonists, spirits and guides, to help him see with clarity. And, we, the readers, are taken along through the past and begin to change our opinions. We are made to stand in another’s shoes and say, Yes, now I understand your struggles and what has led to the present thought, word, and behavior. The man molded in the hands of others became the Ebene er of the present. e had a father who blamed him for the death of his mother. And was a child who remained at school while other boys and girls were allowed to return home to family during a season of blustery weather and the festivity of Christmas. Obtaining money and its power became for Scrooge more powerful than love, more important than the tradition of spending money in a season of giving. We know his thoughts, as presented in his words, “What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You’re poor enough.” In response, the nephew replies to his ncle Scrooge, “What right have you to be dismal? What reason have you to be morose? You’re rich enough.”

Change. It arrives with a catalyst; yet, the visual of past, present, and the potential future has, in this story, the ability to change the heart. Ironically, when the shutters are thrown open, and snow lies on the window ledge; as the his voice calls out, almost in a panic, “What day is this?”; we, as readers, mirror his compassion and relief in hearing the response, “Today!” “Why, Christmas Day.” The final pages arrive with the knowledge that the Christmas spirit will be honored in hearts all year, and in the future!

For six weeks, Charles Dickens wrote what historians claim was “his little Christmas book.” The words were written with Dickens alternately weeping and laughing. Published in November of 1843, the book was a success. Six weeks later, the play appeared on the ondon st e then e or The nute fil rr ed in 1938.

In spite of the days of war and headline news, the simplicity of then derived mostly from the limitations of technology and the need to be together. ut in our mind, the tools, values, and activities do not have to be just a memory.

WRITING LETTERS Well before the expression You’ve got mail! the joy of reaching into the mailbox to find an envelope addressed to you brought instantaneous excitement. andwritten letters often contained accessories such as fancy stationery and matching envelopes, and required a collection of rubber stamps and a variety of ink pads, and, most importantly, ink pens that did not smear the writing.

Reading a person’s personally constructed words was intimate. And a response took time. Now, stacks of envelopes, sliced 72 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

open with a letter opener and tied with ribbon, could still be in a cedar chest, hat box, or in a closet awaiting a time to reveal their inner secrets. Old letters today offer rare insight into personal situations, events, feelings, and history. ow many family members or friends mail handwritten letters? Send one.

A relationship can only grow closer by exerting the effort to apply words to paper.

MEALS WITHOUT INTERRUPTIONS Earlier, before cell phones were affordable enough to provide a family plan for the household, there was a long spiral phone cord that could stretch a distance of sixfeet in length. It allowed users to leave a room with greater flexibility, and even sit down to talk. The moment help was requested to set the table or assist in serving, the conversation was quickly ended. If, by chance, the phone rang during dinner, it was considered an interruption to the family and ignored.

LAUNDRY ikewise, before technology improved family appliances to include touch screens and speciali ed features, women set aside one day a week for the arduous task of washing and drying laundry. It began with tubs manually filled with water. arge soap bars created the catalyst to scrub the material up and down a ribbed metal or glass washboard. Afterward, a means of agitation removed the excess soap and dirt from the fabric. A wooden tool with

four prongs could perform the task by hand, or women used an electric wringer machine. Despite the safety ha ard of the forceful two rollers, the appliance was preferred over the action in using a bat. The wet items were carried a short distance, lifted, and hung on multiple clotheslines. In small yards, long poles elevated lines to various heights. Once the clothes were dried, the task of ironing began.

Imagine how easy it would be to hang washable comforters, blankets, duvet covers, mattress pads, and bed sheets outdoors. It saves electricity, time, and leaves a smell of freshness.

SELF-RELIANCE Previous to the time when families and individuals bought fresh produce and meats, keeping only a limited amount of food at home, the pioneer skills of basic survival had become a way of life. Self-reliance was a requirement, a need to depend on oneself and the land. unting provided food and leather, while the woods offered wild fruits, nuts, and a variety of berries. iving near a water source expanded a diet by means of crayfish and fish. The garden, worked by everyone in the family, added to the food on the table. Preparing for winter meant canning meals and salting meats. oney was needed, of course; yet, families required few possessions to live well.

The possibilities for engaging in learning a new craft are limitless. If you have had an interest in learning to sew or quilt, making candles or soap, studying mythology and the constellations, saving seeds, creating a medicinal garden, or learning new recipes to be baked in cast iron over an open fire, go ahead and add to the viable skills and talents that were useful then, as well as now!

many people, it is a Christmas tradition.

Sitting down with your loved ones and watching the timeless program, A Charlie Brown Christmas, which premiered on December 9th, 1965. Many people watch this story each year in December. But, have you ever asked yourself what makes this classic so memorable and a favorite of so many?

During Christmas, a feeling of nostalgia is in the air, and every smell, sight, film, etc. can trigger a beloved memory for most people. This is exactly what happens with A Charlie Brown Christmas. Within the first few minutes, as viewers watch the characters ice skating, and the song “Christmastime is Here” plays in the background, they are taken back in time. They remember special moments spent with family and Christmas memories from long ago.

According to writer Mike Errico, in his article, “The Real Reason You Love A Charlie Brown Christmas,” jazz pianist and film composer Vince Guaraldi’s use of sounds and pictures created an “emotional resonance.”

Plus, the characters are voiced by children, not adults, adding a child-like enjoyment to the story. After all, doesn’t everyone feel like a child again during the holidays?

Along with the music and children’s voices, the film is remembered because of its premise. A depressed Charlie Brown is on a “search” for Christmas cheer. He is fed up with the commercialism of the holiday. To help with his journey, friend Lucy asks Charlie Brown to direct the neighborhood Christmas play. However, things don’t go as planned and chaos occurs. All the characters have different opinions, but for Charlie Brown, all the play needs is the enchantment of

a Christmas tree. He and friend Linus go shopping and end up with a tiny twig of a tree. Once the two return to the rehearsal, their tree isn’t a big hit and a frustrated Charlie Brown asks if anybody knows what Christmas is all about. In the end, Linus saves the day by reciting the story of Christmas, Luke 2: 8-14. In addition, throughout the film, Snoopy is up to his traditional antics, making the loveable pup even more treasured.

The story concludes with the Peanuts gang finding the meaning of Christmas, which doesn’t involve presents, glitter, or decorations.

A Charlie Brown Christmas is full of memorable and meaningful symbols that almost everyone can connect to. There is the tree; the tension of the commercialism of Christmas; coming together to help a friend or loved one; and discovering the message of the holiday. One reason these elements are easy to relate to is because these are the things some people are feeling during the month of December. A Charlie Brown Christmas reminds us of what is important and what is not. It gives the Christmas message to generations throughout the world. In addition, it shows that material objects aren’t the full representation of the holiday and that you can take the tiniest, unpleasantlooking thing and make it beautiful, like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree.

When the show premiered on CBS, the network expected it to flop and be the end of Peanuts.

However, people knew the program would be a success just by its broadcast when it was watched by more than 15.4 million viewers. Since then, A Charlie Brown Christmas has become the second-longest running Christmas program in history. Also, the program has inspired the television Christmas tradition of running half-hour animated specials, such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Frosty the Snowman.

Throughout the years, A Charlie Brown Christmas has become a Christmas staple. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz produced a timeless and relatable holiday story that is packed with nostalgia, a sense of melancholy, and meaning. Just as Linus said, the program describes “what Christmas is all about.”

Studies have shown that no matter how much we love and look forward to the holidays, they are very stressful. Growing up, my parents made the decision always to be home for Christmas. As children, my sister and I loved knowing that Santa could find us, we could enjoy all our gifts, and we could share our excitement with our friends during the vacation from school. All that would have been different if we had traveled two and a half days from our home in northern Virginia to our grandparents’ home in Texas. Our school vacation would have been over by the time we got back, our friends’ gifts would have been put away, and Christmas and all its trimmings would have been cleared out.

My husband and I made the same decision when our daughters were born. We would host as many family members as wanted to come, but we would not be traveling during Christmas. My parents were happy to make the trip from Florida—nothing like leaving sand and palm trees to get that cold blast of winter, but it’s hard not to be with your grands. My sister’s family came until their eldest was nearly three. They decided then that it was easier for Santa to find

their home. It also meant our parents would begin the rotation of one year with us, the next with my sister.

I loved hosting Christmas! Having our daughters and sons-in-law with us, and occasionally my parents, was the best gift I could ever have. Of course, when our first grandchild was three, my daughter and son-in-law wanted to start their own traditions. I certainly understood this, as the “No travel on Christmas” was a generations-old plan. As the other two married, but before children came, we started the “One year at our home and the next with the grands.” We alternated with Thanksgiving, so it was going smoothly. Things changed when first our children moved, and then we did.

Which brings us to last year.

Last year we moved to Wilmington where two of our daughters live. This would seem to be no problem, except for a slight hitch. There is nothing like watching the unbridled joy of a child finding the gifts from Santa. It is unfair to make them wait until you arrive. So, last year, although we got

to be with both families here, it was after the fact. Even though we did see some of our grands last Christmas, it is hard trying to decide where to spend the holiday this year. For the two daughters who live here, they feel that they should each get the “Spend the night and wake up with your grandchildren” time. For them, they feel the out-of-towners get more visits. However, the daughter in the different city feels that we get to see and spend more time with our other grands. With two children, my parents had it easy. One year here, next year there. With most of our grandchildren within a year or two of each other, there aren’t too many more Christmases that will have that childhood innocence. For now, we have decided to start our rotation with the out-of-towners and begin a new tradition of “Here, here, and there.” As long as I am with family, I am happy, so it is a win-win for me!

I wish for all a Merry Christmas, and may this year and all the years to follow find you at the home where your heart is!

Grandparent Names

If

you are about to become a first-time grandparent, you know that beyond the incredible excitement of having a grandchild lies the question, “What will they call me?” For most soon-to-be’s, there is the assumption that their grandchild will call them the name they have in mind, and a good deal of time is spent coming up with just the right name. Sorry! Not going to happen! The names your grandchild pick for you come from their own interpretations and those usually stick. Plus, as a general rule, whatever the first grandchild calls you is what all the others to come are going to call you. So, let’s hope for the best!

As in past stories, Facebook friends and family participated in a grassroots poll by sharing their own grandparent names. Some are fairly consistent and well-used; others are one-of-a-kind.

Mamaw and Papaw seem to be frequent choices; the spelling occasionally changes to Mamo and Papo. These were the top name combinations. Interestingly, most names appear to go together. Grandma, Granny, or Grannie were not as common in the poll as one might expect; neither was Granddad or Granddaddy. Perhaps those letters are a little harder for babies to manage?

Grandparent couples included Meme and Pepa, Pipa and Mima, MiMi and Papa. And one unique combination of Bubs and Bibi.

And, why use just one name when repeating it sounds so much better, right?

Such as Poppop, GiGi, or RiRi (his granddad’s first name is Ricky—makes sense, right?).

Nonny and Nana for grandmothers are frequent, as are Pops or just Pop. One grandmother shared that their grandchild’s name for her was Darling, because that’s what the baby always heard his granddad call her. What a sweet story to share with future generations, and proof that children are always watching and listening?

Others shared their names given by the grandchildren were Nana and Gaga, Papa T and Yea-Yea, BB and Bull, Pop and Grammy, GaGa and Dziadek (Polish for grandfather).

Not all grandparents embrace the grandparent-type names; they’re thrilled to be grandparents, just not into commonly used grandparent names.

Some just prefer their own first name or a grandparent name tacked onto their name like Nana Sandy.

As a new grandparent, you can try to influence what your grandbaby calls you by calling yourself whatever name you prefer. But, make no mistake, that baby is going to call you what they want to call you.

And, you’ll be just fine with whatever your name turns out to be!

At the end of the day, just holding a grandchild snuggled in your arms is the start of a new phase of life. There’s nothing like the adoration in a grandchild’s eyes, no matter what name they’ve picked to call you.

You will wear that name proudly; it identifies you as that little person’s grandparent. Let the spoiling begin!

DON’T LET THIS BE THE LAST YEAR OF MAGIC

was seven years ago this month, but I remember it like yesterday. My kids were ages seven and four at the time. We had five weeks until Christmas, and I was grasping at straws on how to contain the magic. Here was the narrative: I was out shopping with my kids and my daughter’s friend, who for the sake of anonymity, we’ll call Sally. Sally, who is seven years old like my daughter, is a sweet girl who has an older sibling and just happens to know a little bit more about life than I want my daughter to know—at least for now.

On the way home I was feeling festive, so I popped in a Christmas CD, and my daughter squealed, “Oh, my gosh, they’re already playing Christmas music on the radio!” After that, there was some chatter from the back of the van which I couldn’t make out, and then I heard my daughter, Emily, exclaim, “What? How can you not believe in Santa? I’ve heard the jingle bells from his sleigh on my roof, AND I’ve heard the scratches from his reindeer. Even my mom said she’d heard the same thing when she was my age! How do you explain that?”

Sally replied, “I don’t know. I just think it’s our parents who bring us presents, not Santa.” As soon as I heard that, I turned off the CD and tried to change the subject. But my efforts were thwarted.

After a brief—and random—effort to talk to Sally about her new dance class, Emily—from out of nowhere—asked Sally, “Do you want me to teach you the Ten Commandments?”

I about crashed into the car in front of me! You see, it’s not

like Emily to talk religion, but she’s immersed in her First Communion Readiness classes—and is loving them—so I wasn’t completely shocked to hear her bring this up.

So Sally replied by saying she didn’t need to know the Ten Commandments, because she doesn’t go to church.

And then Emily started arguing that she does need to know them. So I stepped into the conversation and said, “Sally, that’s OK, but Emily just learned them and wants to recite them.”

At which point Sally responded, “But I don’t believe in God.” I think there was a collective hush in my mini-van, and then my four-year-old son – of all people – chimed in and exclaimed, “WHAT? You don’t believe in God? What…do you think that some builder guy came in and made Earth out of nothing? Do you think that some builder guy came in and created people and animals???”

Holy cow…this conversation was going places I did not foresee, nor did I know how to manage them!

With that, my daughter added, “Yea, and if you don’t believe in God and Santa, then you probably don’t believe in the Easter Bunny either. But I KNOW you believe in the Tooth Fairy, because it was just at your house!”

That was the end of that conversation and the beginning of my fears that the enchantment won’t last forever. For those of you in the midst of it, enjoy it now and relish it for all it’s worth. It’s truly a magical time that lingers briefly, but creates memories for a lifetime.

Trends in Literature Have Led to Superb Children’s Books

BY LISA S.T. DOSS Isn’t it odd to think such a word is a tool used in literature? To judge by the popularity of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, a change in themes has arrived to include strong female characters, and magical communities and creatures. While magic and strong female protagonists are current themes, readers will also expand their knowledge of notable women who made history in a non-fiction format! Fiction, too, has brought forth the Marvel and DC Superhero universe of girls and women who face problems and intelligently find solutions. Science, through the STEM curriculum, which represents a problem-based approach to teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, is featured in many fiction, non-fiction, and activity books.

The trends of the year may encourage you to put a few of the following titles at the top of your child’s reading list.

NON-FICTION Calling All Minds: How to Think and Create Like an Inventor by Temple Grandin. Children who love handson projects and seek to think outside the box will enjoy this book. It also includes information about various scientists and inventors. (Ages 8+) Rad Girls Can: Stories of Bold, Brave, and Brilliant Young Women by Kate Schatz. A compilation of the inspiring stories of 49 girls under the age of 20 from around the world. Readers will read about girls from the 6th to the twenty-first centuries. (Ages 10+)

FICTION The Princess in Black and the Science Fair Scare by Shannon and Dean Hale: In a STEM-based setting, this sixth book in the series confronts the main character, the Princess in Black, with a problem. This series promotes girls who are fearless, quick thinkers. (Ages 5+) Rosie Revere and the Raucous Riveters: The Questioneers, Book 1 by Andrea Betty. Young Readers may already know the collection of books titled Ada Twist, Scientist and Rosie Revere, Engineer.

Combining these two books introduces The Questioneers series, featuring female characters and STEM themes of science exploration. (Ages 6+) The Isle of the Lost: Graphic Novel, The Descendants, by Melissa de la Cruz: Encased in a magic bubble twenty years ago, the villains of the Disney world must determine how to live on “the Isle of the Lost.” Complemented by pictures, the story offers antagonists the opportunity to learn from mistakes, establish friendship and work as a team. (Ages 8+) Snared, Escape to the Above (Wily Snare Series, Book 1) by Adam Jay Epstein: Wily Snare has never seen the sun. He lives underground and creates traps such as scorpion nets, chopping blades, and pressure points to keep treasure seekers away from the dungeon. Children will enjoy this captivating novel featuring themes of trust, friendship, loyalty, sticky problems, and teamwork. (Ages 8+) Time Jumpers (Five Kingdoms, Book 5)

by Brandon Mull. Cole and his friends are ready to save the Outskirts from utter destruction, but

will they be able to accomplish this and still return home to Earth permanently?

Fortunately for readers, Time Jumpers is the final book of the series. In addition to the creative design of the five different kingdoms, readers will cheer for the characters as each problem is solved. (Ages 9+) The Third Mushroom by Jennifer L. Holm. A sequel to the book, The Fourteenth Goldfish, which emphasized the message that we should welcome new experiences even if they turn out not to be for us. Holm’s books are ideal for fostering conversation. Readers will learn about influential scientists, while the characters battle issues such as puberty and awkward first dates. (Ages 9+) Aru Shah and the End of Time (A Pandava Novel, Book 1) by Roshani Chokshi. Readers who enjoyed Perry Jackson and The Heroes of Olympus series by author Rick Riordan will undoubtedly expand their knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology to include the Indian gods and goddesses. In this story, the heroes are heroines linked to the gods set in modern times. Key themes include magic and fantasy, adventure, friendship, misfits and underdogs, and monsters, ghosts, and vampires. (Ages 9 to 12) A Warning of Books for Ages 12+ As “trends” continue, parents must be aware of the surprising content found in current publications of preteen and teen literature.

While the books may offer positive messages and strong role models, the content may also include foul language, graphic violence, sexual situations and favors, and teen drug and alcohol abuse. If parents are pleased to see preteens and teenagers reading, the decision to read along can be a subtle excuse to discuss challenging themes.

How to End the Holiday Season with LESS Stuff

holidays can be extremely stressful times for all people, especially parents. In recent years it seems that the gift-giving portion of the Christmas season has been taken over by the gift-receiving portion. For parents, it is important to make sure children are not focused solely on the presents they’ll be receiving on Christmas morning, but more on the message of giving around the holiday season.

How can this be achieved, however, if they are constantly bombarded with advertisements on all the cool material items they “must” have? Implement the following rules within your holiday traditions, and it will help you end the holidays with less stuff and more appreciation than you started with.

Start right when the holiday season starts for you—which for many of us is when Target starts selling Christmas ornaments. The first thing that is important to do is to sit down with your children and discuss what the holidays mean to you. Focus on how important and fun it is to spend this time with family, and talk about how grateful you are for the things that you have. When they inevitably bring up how thankful they are for all their toys, ask them how they would feel if they weren’t able to have any toys. Talk for a little bit about how some families can’t afford Christmas presents or even enough food for a big Christmas dinner. Use this as a transition to how your family can help these children— then, drop the bomb! You can look through all your toys and pull out anything that isn’t getting regular use and doesn’t have major sentimental value and donate it to children who aren’t as lucky.

The actual sorting of toys will need to be supervised; this is an activity that when started young will be easier each following year. Hold out each toy and ask your child when the last time they played with it was. Is this something that goes with another set, and do you still have the other pieces? No need to keep plastic cookware if you got rid of the toy kitchen two years ago. Does it even work? Broken toys can get thrown out (and you will find many of them hidden in toy boxes if you are like most American families), which will reduce your excess stuff as well. Is it age-appropriate? If you have older children and find a bunch of baby toys, you probably don’t need them taking up space in your house.

The way the toys leave your house can vary; many parents chose to have their children be present when dropping the toys off at a charitable location (Goodwill, Charity Thrift Shop, Shelter, etc.), to bring the process full-circle. If you have a smaller amount of toys that you are donating, a fun option is also to have a large burlap bag that you fill with the toys to put under the tree to perpetuate the idea that Santa will distribute them to children in need. The only obstacle to the latter option is making sure you hide the bag well enough and donate it quickly enough that your children don’t find it and you have some uncomfortable explaining to do.

Now that you have decluttered your house, make sure you don’t refill it with too many new toys under the tree. Follow the “Rule of 4,” which involves splitting presents into four groups, stipulating that the children can only get one present from each. The four sections are: “Something you want, something you need, something to wear, and something to read.” This way they are only getting one toy, and three other things that can still be fun, but are more useful. This rule can be a bit restrictive, and many parents are of the mind that you can never have too many books, so adjust as you see fit for your family. It’s also important to pass this information on to any relatives who may be buying presents for your children. Now sit back and enjoy the holidays without stressing about your house being overrun with toys!

Celebrate the Tradition that is the

is that special time of year with the holidays upon us, where traditions reign supreme when it comes to our family events. And one time-honored tradition, now in the 45th year of its revised version, is the annual Frank Spencer Basketball Tournament, sponsored

by East Coast Wings, and held locally at Lawrence Joel Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum from December 26th-28th, 2018. This unique event brings sixteen area high schools together—that is, Atkins, Carver, East Forsyth, Glenn, Mount Airy, Mount Tabor, North Forsyth, North Surry, Parkland, Reagan, Reynolds, South Stokes, Walkertown, West Forsyth, West Stokes, and Winston-Salem Prep to compete in this most historic tournament. The event is all made possible through the generous sponsorships provided by East Coast Wings, Battery Watering Technologies, Myers Tire, and Pepsi Corporation.

This is a great opportunity for families and fans alike to get together, share old memories and cheer on their alma maters and favorite teams in a fun-filled atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm. This is only part of what Frank Spencer must have had in mind when he first conceived the idea of this tournament. The former sports editor for the Winston-Salem Journal had a special affection for the sport and especially for bringing teams together at the holidays to showcase their talents to the community at-large.

After last year’s tremendous success in this important fundraiser for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High Schools, once again the organizers are bringing together all sixteen teams to LJVM Coliseum for the opening-round games. Principal Charles McAninch of West Forsyth High School and Principal Spencer Hardy of Parkland High School, representing the co-hosts for the event this year, share a common vision to allow all participants the opportunity to display their talents on a big stage.

The idea was an instant success and created an even more enthusiastic atmosphere, with all teams, alumni and fans being represented equally.

Principal McAninch added, “We are coming off an extremely successful Frank Spencer Tourney in 2017. Our vision last year to enable all 16 teams to play in the LJVM Coliseum on Day 1, provide free parking, and incorporate more ways for young people to be involved, became a reality. The Cheer Competition was added and drew big crowds. Also, we had CP3 Academy host a three-on-three basketball tourney during halftime, which gave younger athletes an opportunity to play in the Coliseum. We offered a tournament program selling for just $1 and gave away FREE spirit towels to fans in attendance, with each school allotted towels in their school colors. Our attendance numbers were higher than in previous years, and the schools profited almost twice as much as the year before.

This wouldn’t be possible, of course, without our generous sponsors, and we want to thank them for continuing to make this tournament a huge success and a vital part of our holiday tradition. Our sponsors are making a difference in our community and also in the lives of the players, families, and fans alike.”

The tournament begins on Wednesday, December 26th, and runs through Friday, December 28th. The tournament’s traditional format continues with the Myers Tire Bracket and the Pepsi Bracket. It all begins with the four games in the Pepsi Bracket at LJVMC on December 26th, at 9:00 am, followed by four games in the Myers Tire Bracket, to be played in the late afternoon and evening session.

Semi-finals will be played on December 27th, and capping off the tournament on December 28th will be a Cheerleading Competition beginning at 5:00 pm, immediately followed by the finals of both brackets. Consolation games will be played on Thursday and Friday at West Forsyth and Parkland High Schools.

Other activities are planned, as well, throughout the tournament. Admission is $10 at the Coliseum and parking is free, courtesy of Battery Watering Technologies. Admission is $8 for consolation rounds taking place at Parkland High School and West Forsyth High School.

So whether you’re a fan of Camels, Yellow Jackets, Eagles, Bobcats, Granite Bears, Spartans, Vikings, Greyhounds, Mustangs, Raiders, Demons, Sauras, Wolfpack, Titans, Wildcats, Phoenix, or just high-quality, high school basketball, you’ll want to come out and join in all the fun that is the Frank Spencer Basketball Tournament, sponsored by East Coast Wings.

A Guide to Touring Col leges

You

are about to make a huge decision: where to spend the next four years of your life!

Probably for the first time ever you have a huge role to play in planning your future.

The process of applying to colleges, trying to convince them to take you on, is a stressful one, but for now, relax!

At this stage, as you tour colleges, you are the prize.

Don’t make the admissions councilors’ (ACs’) and tour guides’ jobs too easy. Your ACs and tour guides are paid to make their college look good; trust me, I am a tour guide for my college, and I have been trained thoroughly.

So, don’t be a passive visitor, ask hard questions and investigate for yourself.

When you set up your visit make sure to include the areas of campus you want to see and the people you want to talk to. Also, a great way to find out if you would like the college is to stay overnight in a dorm building.

Questions to ask about academics: 1. What is the professor/student ratio?

2. What kind of core courses are required?

3. What grade point average is necessary in order to play a sport?

4. What kind of tutoring is available?

5. Are there study abroad programs?

Questions about campus community:

Setting up a visit:

1. Do most students stay on campus or go home on weekends?

1. Let the visit staff know you want to see the art facility or a lab room or gym.

2. Is there a Greek community—sororities/fraternities?

2. Ask to meet with the advisor or a professor of the major you are considering.

3. Ask to meet with the coach of the sport or the instructor of the instrument you want to play.

4. Ask to stay overnight.

In order to be an active visitor, you need to do some prep work. Know what you are looking for in academics and in a community before you start your visit. Below are some questions you may want to ask during your visit.

4. What are some examples of campus events?

5. What is the guy/girl ratio?

When you are finished with your visit, jot down some notes, so you remember the best and worst things about the college, because after a while they will all run together. Make sure to get the contact info of your AC, so you can ask them follow-up questions, and write thank-you notes if you met with a coach or professor.

These individuals can have a significant impact on your acceptance.

BY SARA WILES I love the holidays—the scents of Fraser fir, the warmth of the fireplace, the memories that have been created throughout the holiday season, are all things that make this time of year so magical.

Every Christmas season, it is a family tradition to get together with close friends and bake as many holiday treats as our hearts desire. From classic

3. Divide dough into two pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to �- inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters or a knife. Place cutouts 1 inch apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes and allow to cool completely.

4. While cookies are cooling, in a medium bowl sift together confectioners’ sugar and cream of tartar. Blend in egg whites.

Using an electric or stand mixer, beat on high for 5 minutes, or until thick and stiff.
