And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore, then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before!

“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store. “Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more. Dr. Suess got it right in his classic tale of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” Christmas doesn’t come from a store and it sure means a whole lot more!

Hidden beneath all the commercialism, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. One of my favorite traditions is attending a candlelight Christmas Eve service at Sunrise UMC with my family. I’m blessed to have an amazing church family. If you don’t have a home church or you’re looking for a Christmas program to attend, check

out the Christmas Program Directory on pages 77–79. It’s a wonderful way to get introduced to one of the many places of worship in our community.

Reynolda House celebrates their 100th anniversary this holiday season. They have an amazing line-up planned with their Centennial Christmas events. If you’ve never been to Reynolda House, you should definitely make plans to go!

It’s a treat not to miss! As evidenced by our extra calendar pages, there is no shortage of events to help make your holidays merry and bright this season!

San Francisco Ballet Stars Yuan Yuan Tan and Jaime Garcia Castilla to Star in UNCSA’s The Nutcracker this December

of sugar plum fairies will be sure to be dancing through your head after experiencing this year’s guest artists in the UNC School of the Arts’ beloved annual production of The Nutcracker. San Francisco Ballet principal dancers Yuan Yuan Tan and Jaime Garcia Castilla will visit Winston-Salem to take on the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier Prince on Wednesday and Thursday, December 13th and 14th.

Before joining the San Francisco Ballet as a soloist in 1995, Tan trained at the Shanghai Dancing School and John Cranko School.

She was promoted to principal dancer in 1997 and appointed as the company’s Richard C. Barker principal dancer in 2012.

Castilla trained at the Royal Conservatory of Professional Dance.

He was named an apprentice with the San Francisco Ballet in

2001, joined the company in 2002 and was promoted to soloist in 2006. In 2008, he became a principal dancer with the company.

“One of the most thrilling aspects of UNCSA’s annual production of The Nutcracker is the tradition of bringing world-class guest artists to our stage to perform alongside our extraordinarily talented students, states CSA Chief Marketing ffice Katharine Laidlaw. “Yuan Yuan and Jaime have performed in The Nutcracker numerous times as principal dancers, and they will be bringing incredible technique and artistry here to Winston Salem.”

“The dancers who come each year for The Nutcracker are not only here to captivate and electrify our audiences, but also to inspire and teach our students,” says Dean of Dance Susan Jaffe.

Yuan Yuan Tan was born in Shanghai, China and joined the San Francisco Ballet as a Soloist in 1995. She was promoted to Principal Dancer in 1997.

In 2016, she received an Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance for her entire 2014–2015 San Francisco Ballet season, and in 2015, Hong Kong’s Phoenix TV named her one of the world’s most influential Chinese. She won the 2014 Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Female Performance (Classical) for Possokhov’s RAkU and a Dance Magazine Award in 2013.

She was named a “Hero of Asia” in the Asian edition of Time magazine in 2004, was featured in an international GAP ad campaign in 2012 and was invited to the White House in 1999. She won a gold medal and the Nijinsky Award at the 1st Japan International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition in 1993 and a gold medal at the 5th International Ballet Competition in Paris in 1992.

Jaime Garcia Castilla hails from Madrid, Spain, and was named an Apprentice at the San Francisco Ballet in 2001. He joined the company as a member of the Corps de Ballet the following year. He was promoted to Soloist in 2006 and to Principal Dancer in 2008.

As a guest artist, Castilla performed with SFDanceworks in 2017, at “Ballet Stars From San Francisco,” for the Lively Arts Foundation Gala in Fresno, California, in 2012, and at the Pas de Deux Gala in Valladolid, Spain, in 2011 and 2012. He danced Flames of Paris and “The Ocean and Two Pearls” from The Humpbacked Horse in Osaka, Japan, in 2006.

Castilla’s honors include the Prize of Excellence and Contemporary Dance Prize at the Prix de Lausanne in 2001 and the People’s Prize and 1st prize at the International Competition in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1998.

It’s not too late for a comfortable retirement Catch-up contributions can help those over 50 John and Linda didn’t have a lot of money to set aside while paying the mortgage and raising a family. Now that their kids are grown and the house is paid off, they’re concerned they may not have saved enough to retire in 10 years.

Estimating how much money you’ll need in retirement – and figuring out how to save it – can be complex and confusing. Fewer than half of Americans know how much they should be saving, according to the LIMRA Secure Retirement Institute.

Most workers are saving too little or nothing at all. Though LIMRA recommends saving a minimum of 10 percent of your income annually, four out of five workers are saving less. The average rate of saving is only 6 percent, LIMRA reports, leaving almost a third of pre-retirees (workers ages 55-70) with less than $100,000 for retirement. More than a third have less than $25,000.

The Santa Helper’s Project

indness, charity, and extending good will to others well defines what it means to participate in the Santa Helper’s Project. You do not need to worry about registrations or assembling a group to participate. This project occurs when families, friends, or individuals actively step into the role of spreading happiness and cheer during the Christmas season; perhaps a few of the following suggestions will speak to you in a meaningful way.

Spontaneous Acts of Kindness: The best moments of kindness often occur without planning. They involve reaching an item from a tall shelf or waiting for an extended period of time to hold a door open; and what about leaving a box of donuts in your work room, or a cup of coffee on a colleague’s desk? Ask your children how they, too, can engage in an act of generosity by being kind and thoughtful. These wonderful moments will be remembered and mimicked in positive ways in future days and years.

Writing Letters: Christmas is a time of year to offer gratitude to people who provide a service throughout the year, such as a mailman, garbage man, librarian, barber or hairdresser. One group you may not consider is our service members. It would be a welcomed gift to receive a letter from a stranger offering thanks, and wishing him or her safety. The following website, www.operationwearehere.com/ IdeasforSoldiersCardsLetters.html, can help you find the right organi ation to which to send your letter, and perhaps a small care package.

Volunteering: While donations of food, clothing, and gifts are needed during the holiday season, please consider donating your time through the act of volunteering. Based on your interests, there are numerous organizations, from shelters to a food bank, a local animal rescue agency or shelter, a hospital or nursing home, and those forming at your place of employment and church.

This Christmas gift is not necessarily intended to be a short-term offer of service, but a starting point.

A Handmade Angel Gift: Think of how you can brighten a neighbor’s day. Baking a pie or leaving groceries at the door are possible suggestions. You could also gather a few recycled items and design a Christmas angel. Please leave a card, whether it is signed or unsigned, too, with a Christmas greeting and well wishes. Children and grandchildren would love to participate in helping.

Charity: Thinking inside the box, you may provide a charitable donation to a few organizations; however, also think outside about the organi ations in our community, such as our fire stations, police forces, food banks, public libraries and schools, the Ronald McDonald House, Hospice, and our local hospitals, including Brenner Children’s hospital. While these organizations appreciate monetary donations, find out if they are also having a drive to benefit a particular cause.

Donations of Books, Food, and Clothing: Use this time of the year to gather books in good condition, and donate them to a children’s center, shelter, elementary school, or local library. You can also donate clothing and shoes to Big Brothers and Big Sisters, which has a donation pick-up service.

Giving is rarely one-sided. You may discover helping others not only gives you a good feeling, but connects you with something larger. Perhaps this project may provide an ongoing opportunity to volunteer, or connect you with a new friend. If the Santa’s helper project has been a positive experience, it doesn’t have to end. Paying good will forward is a beautiful, life-long endeavor. Merry Christmas!

parents, and fans alike are in for a special treat this year, since for the first time since 2006, all eight games of the first round, along with the semifinals and finals of the annual Frank Spencer Basketball Tournament, will be held at Lawrence Joel Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum (LJVM). Thanks are due in large part to the dedicated efforts of Principal Charles McAninch of West Forsyth High School and Principal Spencer Hardy of Parkland High School, and the support of the tournament’s corporate sponsor, Battery Watering Technologies.

It’s been over a decade since all the participating teams have begun the Tournament playing in LJVM Coliseum. Principal McAninch and Principal Hardy discussed the idea and felt it was time to bring the tournament back to its original format for the players’ benefit, as well as the fans.’ The other High School Principals agreed with the idea, and Battery Watering Technologies was named as Title Sponsor. Contributing sponsors are Pepsi, Lowder Mulch and Topsoil, Myers Tire, and East Coast Wings, along with numerous program advertisers.

Athletic Director Mike Pennington from West Forsyth states, “I have been involved in the Frank Spencer as a basketball coach and Athletic Director since 1989. The Spencer has been a great tournament for a number of years. The fact that our kids have been able to play in the same arena where they watch Wake Forest and other ACC teams play has always been one of the things that makes this tournament special. For the past several years, only the teams that [had] won their 1st-round games in the Spencer have been able to play in the LJVM (Coliseum). We are very happy that all the 1st-round games this season will be at the LJVM, which means that the student-athletes from all 16 teams will get to play in the Coliseum this season.” Special Halftime events have been planned for the tournament, including, this year, the plan to involve more youth from the WSFCS community. Of course, the idea could not have come to fruition, had it not been for the generosity of Battery Watering Technologies, who, when first approached about Title Sponsorship, were immediately excited to be a part of this community-wide event.

The tournament begins on Tuesday, December 26th, and runs through Thursday, December 28th. Consolation games will be played on Wednesday and Thursday at West Forsyth and Parkland High Schools, both of which serve as co-hosts for the event this year. Admission is only $10 at LJVM and $8 at the host schools. Fans can enjoy free parking at LJVM this year, courtesy of East Coast Wings.

Once again the teams will be equally divided into two brackets of eight teams each; beginning with the Myers Tire Bracket along with the Pepsi Bracket. The four games in the Pepsi Bracket will begin at LJVM on December 26th, at 9:00 am, followed by four games in the Myers Tire Bracket, to be played in the late afternoon and evening session. The semifinals will be played on December 27th, culminating with a Cheerleading Competition and the finals on December 28th.

As part of the effort to bring the tournament back to its original nature, it has been made more affordable for families to witness high school competition at its finest. This nationally recognized basketball tournament is named after Frank Spencer, the former sports editor for the Winston-Salem Journal. It is one of the oldest holiday tournaments in existence, originating when Spencer formed the Northwest (NC) Basketball Tournament in the 1920s, and running through the early 1950s. At one point, there were more than 140 teams participating in the nearly four-week tournament and Ripley’s Believe It or Not proclaimed it as the world’s largest sports tournament at the time. In 1974, the tournament was revived as the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic in Winston-Salem and modified to its current three-day tournament format, encompassing schools from within the system. It’s featured some great talent in the past, including NBA and Wake Forest standouts Chris Paul (West Forsyth December 2017 / 29

Friday, October 27th, more than 300 guests gathered at the Senior Services Center, on Shorefair Drive, in support of the “Evening for Alzheimer’s Care.” This marks the 17th year that this annual event has been held to benefit Senior Services’ Eli abeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center. Event chairs for the second consecutive year were Hunter and Sandlin Douglas.

The fundraiser’s presenting sponsors were Wake Forest Baptist Health and WestRock, whose gift was a tribute to Cynthia and Stephen Anderson, the evening’s honorary chairs. Among the other top sponsors were Wells Fargo, Arbor Acres and Golden Corral.

As guests mingled, enjoyed the music—provided again this year by Kevin Douthit on keyboard—and visited with friends, they also had the opportunity to peruse the wonderful array of more than 300 silent auction items donated by area businesses and individuals. The items up for bid included furniture, jewelry, tickets to sporting events, artwork, electronics, vacations and gift certificates to some of the area’s best restaurants. Highlights of the menu for the evening’s buffet dinner, catered by Five Loaves, were the grilled salmon and pork tenderloin, along with the European chocolate cupcakes with chocolate truffle centers.

Casie Hammons, Director of Senior Services’ Annual Fund and Special Events, added, “As always, it was a funfilled occasion, raising thousands of scholarship dollars for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease who attend the Williams Adult Day Center. We are very grateful to all the sponsors, patrons, auction item contributors, guests, and volunteers who help make each year’s event more successful than the last.”

Children Feel Holiday Stress, too.

MICHELLE MELTON, FAMILY SERVICES Let’s be honest. We all want the holidays to be happy—perfect, even—for everyone, especially our children. We expend enormous amounts of energy, time, and emotion trying to meet all the seasonal demands: baking, cleaning, shopping, attending parties, over-extending our calendars and our financial resources.

“The expectations that we place upon ourselves and our families can often lead to increased feelings of stress and depression,” said James Mitchell, a licensed therapist at Family Services who specializes in relationship stress and communication issues, grief and loss, anxiety and depression, issues from childhood, and adjusting to life changes.

“Cultural messaging leads us to believe that we must meet certain expectations in order to be happy or help others around us to be happy,” he observed.

SIGNS Lisha Méjan agreed. As a Family Services licensed therapist who works with individuals also experiencing mood disorders, trauma, difficulty adjusting to divorce, adoption, or life challenges, Lisha sees how holiday stress can affect children.

“We’re busy people anyway,” said Lisha.

“Then, we add to the normal demands of work, parenting, and relationships all the holiday demands that can disrupt children’s routines or prevent us from recognizing signs that our children are struggling.”

As with adults, children can exhibit feelings of stress as irritability, anger, or sadness.

But children also respond to stress in ways that might be interpreted as “a stage.”

“Little ones are whinier, antsy, or have frequent meltdowns. Older children may act up at school, regress to younger behaviors like bedwetting, or withdraw from friends and family,” Lisha explained.

PREPARE FOR STRESS To help children during the stressful holiday season, James and Lisha offered some practical tips that can minimize stress and help children enjoy the holidays even more.

Maintain Routines. This is especially important for young children who are often dragged along on shopping trips and to special events. Maintaining bed times, and providing time for rest and play is critical in reducing stress in children.

Be realistic. Traditions can provide a sense of security and comfort for children. But it’s also okay to change traditions or rituals of the past in order to create new ones that better reflect changing family dynamics or long-distance relationships.

Consider Nutrition. Busy schedules can lead to meals-on-the-run from the fast food drive-through, and holiday gatherings are filled with sugary treats. At least once a week, plan time for healthy eating and opportunities to be together as a family.

Keep it simple. Children do not equate lavish gifts and parties with happiness.

Often the simplest plans are the most memorable.

Check in. Sometimes children need parents to ask how things are going. This can be particularly important when a child has experienced trauma, such as loss or separation. They are not sure how to bring up what they are feeling. Asking gives them permission to talk about a difficult subject.

Build in time to de-stress. Schedule time for everyone to take a breather. Technology time-outs, outdoor play, and quiet times for talking create opportunities for children and their parents to discover feelings below the surface.

Acknowledge your feelings. It’s normal for adults to feel sadness when missing

loved ones, grieving over a loss, a divorce, or a disappointment. Express your feelings in loving ways. You don’t have to force yourself to be happy, just because it’s the holiday season, but talking about it with your children can reduce their feelings of uncertainty.

Together, with the parents, they can work on strategies so the child can cope with challenging situations” added James.

many of us, the Star of Bethlehem is a symbol of not only Christmas, but of our faith. Even though the star is mentioned in only two verses in the Bible, the light of heaven that guided the Wise Men to Jesus becomes the “star of the show” in the telling of the Christmas story. From long ago to present day, the Star of Bethlehem has remained a central part of our celebration of the season, given a place of honor in our decorations. In our own community, the Christmas star shines brightly night after night from atop Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, adding to Winston-Salem’s celebrations of the season.

Not Just another Christmas Decoration Every year since 1992, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has displayed a Moravian star atop the North Tower of the facility. The star stands 31 feet tall, with 26 rays, weighing 3,400 pounds, illuminated by a 150-watt floodlight at each point and, to those who know the story behind the star, it’s not just another Christmas decoration. “The idea for the star was initiated in 1990 by Shirley Hasty, a secretary in chaplaincy and pastoral education at Wake Forest Baptist, who has since passed, but she left a lasting legacy at the Medical Center and the overall community,” said Gary R. Gunderson, D. Div., D. Min., Vice President of Faith & Health at Wake Forest Baptist Medical.

Ms. Hasty worked for two years with Jack Boles, who was in charge of the carpentry and decoration at the hospital, and Chris Hargett of Cosco Sign Company in Lexington, NC before the star was placed atop the hospital.

The star has become a symbol and staple within the community and, for many, symbolizes the light of God’s love and presence in our lives. “A few years ago, the star unexpectedly went out

and we received many phone calls wondering why the star was not lit up; that’s when we really knew how valued and meaningful the star was to those in the community and [that it was] being cared for at our facility,” Mr. Gunderson commented. If you think about it, the medical center is a place where the personnel try to embody the love of God in caring for their patients and their families, giving them hope during perhaps trying times.

The Lighting of the Star Each year the Medical Center holds a star lighting that is open to the public and includes a worship service and music provided by a Moravian band and the Medical Center chorale. “This year’s lighting event is scheduled for Tuesday, December 5th at 5:45 pm, with a rain date of Wednesday, December 6th at 5:45 pm.

We will serve complimentary apple cider, hot chocolate and Moravian cookies will also be available for our guests,” stated Mr. Gunderson. On average, more than 200 people attend the star lighting and it sets the tone of the season, reminding us of the compassion and hope in God’s love. The star is disassembled every year on the first weather-friendly day after the Epiphany on January 6th.

The Moravian star is something many look forward to every holiday season. The start represents Christ, himself, whom the Scriptures call the “bright morning star” and “the light of the world.” “I think when patients or their family members look at the star, it can offer a little hope and peace,” Mr. Gunderson said.

Then, give me a special name!” With wide eyes, and perhaps a few joyful hoots, jumps, and screams, too, the children will demand to know about their Elf on the Shelf.

Not all named elves are well behaved. Arriving at a dark house prior to the sun’s arrival leaves time for an unexpected amount of trouble. Boy or girl elves have been known to borrow Barbie’s Jeep and be discovered dangling from curtain rods. Elves who enjoy adventure could end up hanging from the ceiling fan, or zip-lining with an elephant, monkey, or bear from the banister to the other side of the room. Families must be aware that the arrival of a magical creature can make the mornings either very entertaining or time-consuming, depending on the predicament. In an agreement requiring good behavior, children can be encouraged to write letters to their specific elf e plaining the house rules, and perhaps offering a “stuffed” friend to keep the named elf out of trouble. (If parents find themselves asking, What are we going to do with our elf suggestions are available online, or they can ask their friends.)

A Remembered Friend Since 2005, the “Elf on the Shelf” has become a welcomed, unexpected tradition for families. Searching the house for the named elf represents a wish to find the spirit of Christmas. Parents will be pleased when the elf writes letters and conveys pride or encouragement to his or her young charges. For the child who loves Christmas and its magic, there is usually a feeling of disappointment when the named elf departs on Christmas night, and will not be seen again until a new beloved Christmas tree arrives in its stand. It’s therefore important for children to know he sees them when they’re sleeping and he knows when they’re awake. In their heart, the magic of the Christmas elf will remain every day of the year.

100 Y E A R S I N T H E M A K I NG The most wonderful time of the year is especially wonderful at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. The historic Reynolda Estate has its roots in the Christmas season. The Reynolds family moved from their Victorian mansion on Fourth Street in downtown Winston-Salem into their country bungalow just in time for Christmas of 1917. That means that Reynolda House has been inhabited, either by a family or by the public, for one hundred years this December. Given this major anniversary, Reynolda has spent its centennial year celebrating the estate’s rich history, while revitalizing its traditions with an eye to the next century. There is no better example of this revitalization than the 2017 Centennial Christmas season.

Reynolda has always been a blend of tradition and innovation, and the Centennial Christmas is a perfect example of this.

For longtime lovers of Christmas at Reynolda, the beloved yearly tradition of “A Christmas Memory” continues. This iconic Reynolda event has become a Christmas tradition for many families, who flock to Reynolda to see Robin Voiers perform this adaptation of Truman Capote’s holiday story.

One of the major elements of Reynolda’s signature holiday decor has always been the fresh Magnolia boughs, which adorn the stairs of the Reception Hall. This year, Reynolda will incorporate a variety of greenery into its holiday design: plants such as hemlock and spruce will diversify the Christmas decor.

Reynolda’s holiday tours are another family favorite.

Though the historic house is decorated for Christmas from November 21 until December 31, the holiday tours are a special opportunity to see Reynolda through the eyes of the Reynolds family. These Christmas tours whisk audiences back in time, as costumed interpreters share anecdotes about Christmas celebrations at Reynolda. for roller skating, shooting gallery, bowling alley, and Streamlined Modern bar, was clearly built for entertaining. The 1940s-esque party-goer will tell visitors about recreation at Reynolda. One beloved anecdote about Babcock-era festivities goes something like this: Mary Babcock planned a “hen party” for herself and some female friends. The Reynolda Archives have a letter in which Mary gives her housekeeper specific instructions for the event: “At Reynolda at 10:00 [p.m.] for basement fun. Have water put in pool if possible.

Who else will you meet on a Christmas tour at Reynolda? The cast of characters includes a nurse, a schoolteacher, and a butler. Though the tour highlights entertainment at Reynolda, life wasn’t all fun and games for the Reynolds family.

The Christmas tours provide insight into the complexities of World War-Era life and discuss the untimely deaths of the Reynoldses. “A 1917 Christmas” shares the stories of the Reynolds family as a lens to see American life at the time. The tour highlights Katharine Smith Reynolds’s charitable contributions to the community, particularly during the holiday season. However, it wouldn’t be a trip to Reynolda without acknowledgement of the family’s immense wealth, so visitors get to oogle various Christmas gifts exchanged between family members. Among the perennial favorites: R.J. Reynolds’s fur coat and Barbara Babcock Millhouse’s ornate dollhouse. After the tour, enjoy refreshments in the reception gallery.

have just been invited to your best friend’s Christmas party, a weekend at your aunt’s, or need a gift on hand for the last-minute dinner at a friend’s house.

When someone has welcomed you into their home for an event, it is always nice to bring a small gift to thank the host.

However, it can sometimes be hard to think about what you should give someone. Do they like a certain type of food Are they allergic to various smells Don’t stress, because I’ve done the hard work for you by creating a list of unique hostess gifts below. All you need to do is choose which one you want to use.

• Sangria in a Jar – All you need to do is take a mason jar and place the items needed for sangria inside. Along with the jar, include a bottle of wine and a selection of fruits to complete the present. Another option is to use a drink dispenser instead of a Mason jar and tie a wooden spoon to the outside.

• All-One-Color Basket – Use the host’s favorite color and turn it into a basket with only items of that color. For example, if they love yellow, all gifts would be yellow. This gift doesn’t have to be huge and can include their favorite candies, drinks, lotions, etc.

• Frames with a Picture Inside – This small gesture will be meaningful for you and your friend. Purchase a few pretty frames and then place a favorite photo of the two of you behind the glass. What better time to remember fun times than during the holidays • Cranberry Orange Stovetop Potpourri – This present takes a little more planning and assembling than others, but definitely worth it, and you can also make one for yourself! All you need is: 1–16 oz. Mason jar with lid ½ cup fresh cranberries 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary 2 slices of an orange 23 cinnamon sticks Nutmeg Water Burlap Ribbon or twine Gift tag Then, fill the jar with the ingredients and immerse in water.

Decorate the outside with the burlap, ribbon or twine, and add a gift tag with instructions on how to use. The instructions should say something like: “Pour contents into a small sauce pan and simmer over low heat. Add water as needed. Enjoy!”

Safe Toy Tips for the Holiday Season

the most wonderful time of the year,” heartily sings Andy Williams. Many would happily agree with him. The holiday season truly is a wonderful time for everyone, most of all for the little ones. This is the one time of the year where parents, family and friends get to spoil them with new, interactive, fun-filled toys. Innocently enough, these gadgets can have a dark side to them. A side which can lead to injury or even death.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2015, there were an estimated 254,200 toy-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments.” What is interesting is that “…of the 254,200 estimated toy-related, emergency departmenttreated injuries, an estimated 185,500 (73 percent) happened to children younger than 15 years of age; an estimated 175,800 (69 percent) occurred to children 12 years of age or younger; an estimated 88,700 (35 percent) happened to children younger than 5 years of age.” Thus, it is not the younger children, as tradition would have it, who are hurting themselves more frequently with toys.

Equally disturbing is another statistic. According to KidsHealth.org, there are around 310,000 one-to-five-year-old children in the nited States that have been discovered to have deleterious levels of lead in their blood.” As a result, these children develop symptoms like stomach pain, headaches, and even anemia. Studies also suggest that this exposure to lead can slow down the developing brain of a child.

With statistics this alarming, it is easy to see why Prevent Blindness America has declared December as Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, shoppers often forget about the safety factors associated with specific toys. efore you make these purchases, it is critical to remember to consider the safety and age range of the toys.

The Prevent Blindness America group encourages everyone to consider if the toys they wish to give suit the age, individual skills, and abilities of the individual child who will receive them. This is crucial when it comes to choosing gifts for infants and children under age three. While these statistics are discouraging, there is no need to panic. There are various ways to ensure that the toys you are buying will be safe, yet fun, for children.

Read on for eight tips on picking a safe toy.

TIP #1: Always read the label. Warning labels give important information about how to use a toy and what recommended ages the toy is appropriate for. This information can help you make sure your child is using the toy the right way. This can also can help you discover if there is any toxic material on the toy.

TIP #2: The larger-the better! When it comes to buying toys for little ones, make sure all toys and parts are larger than your child’s mouth to prevent choking. An easy trick is to see if the toy could fit through the hole of a paper towel. If it can, then it is too small and the child could choke on the toy.

TIP #3 Look for sturdy and strong. Well-made toys are the best and most secure toys for kids. Parts should be safely set and not easy to remove. Also watch for toys that have sharp or protruding edges. With any wood toys, make sure they do not splinter.

TIP #4: Avoid any toy that has projectile objects. Toys that shoot objects into the air can easily cause severe and devastating eye injuries,

as well as be a choking hazard. These types of toys should only be bought for older, ageappropriate children.

TIP #5: Look for well-made stuffed animals. Any stuffed animal you give an infant or young child should be evaluated to make sure it is well-sewn, as well as machine washable. Make sure to take off any loose ribbons or strings to avoid strangulation. Also avoid toys that have small bean-like pellets, as these can cause choking or suffocation if swallowed.

TIP #6: Beware of magnets! Building sets, dolls, action figures and other craft toys often have magnets.

Avoid these for small children at all costs. If swallowed, magnets can tear tissue as well as damage the intestines.

TIP #7: Always be aware of recalls. Before you start shopping for those loved ones, go to the website of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (http://www. cpsc.gov). This is a government website that has the most recent toy recalls. (Recalls happen when certain defects or harmful parts have been found with a particular product.)

TIP #8: Avoid discount stores for infants/small children toys. Make sure to shop for these toys at a respected and wellknown store, like Babies R Us, Buy-Buy Baby, etc. Even though it is tempting to buy toys from the Dollar Store to avoid a high price, these toys are often flimsy and have parts that are breakable.

They could ultimately be more harmful than they are fun!

any teens can’t wait until the day they can drive themselves; it’s a big step in their independence (and for the parents, too). To be able to qualify to take the license exam, they have to sit through some classroom time, drive for a few hours with an instructor, practicing some very basic driving situations, and then log time driving while accompanied. Seems like a lot of e perience, right Wrong.

That’s just not enough, in my opinion.

Okay, here’s the scary number part: Teens are more likely to die from a car crash than all other medical problems combined. Each year in vehicle crashes, approximately 450,000 teens are injured, 27,000 are hospitalized, and 5,500 die.

The youngest drivers are the riskiest.

Drivers age 16–19 are twice as likely to crash as drivers 20-24; and three times more than those 25–29.

Clearly, experience is the main factor here.

Nearly 50% of teen driver fatality accidents involve a single vehicle.

Distractions play an ever-growing role in car crashes, and not just with teens.

However, because of their inexperience, distractions affect teens more. I am not just referring to phone/texting (that’s a whole separate issue: just don’t do it), but consider this: the risk of crashing increases— exponentially—with the number of teen passengers, meaning, one passenger: twice the risk. Two passengers = 4 times the risk, 3 passengers = 8 times the risk, and so on.

I frequently hear parents saying something like, “I am going to get her a big SUV to drive when she gets her license so she will be safe if she crashes.”

Well, if something smaller crashes into her, that is probably true, but a large vehicle is more difficult to maneuver, more difficult to be aware of the borders of the vehicle, see nearby cars from inside, and worst, can carry more distracting passengers (it will happen). And what about the other drivers she is more likely to crash into Here’s the one bright spot in the statistics: the actual number of deaths from car crashes has declined over the last 40 years by about half. This is due solely to the vast improvements in vehicle safety design and equipment. You are simply more likely to survive a crash now, due to safer cars. But that’s not good enough, either.

Avoiding a crash is obviously better than relying on your car to protect you when you crash.

How about we try to learn to avoid crashing, and not just by reducing distractions, but by maneuvering the car

“Defensive driving” is the focus of “driver’s ed,” and yes, is extremely important. Being aware and staying aware of your surroundings and what other cars are doing will help you stay out of situations that lead to crashes. One of my common points of advice is to keep an eye on a car stopped at a STOP sign until you are past, especially now that drivers choose to use STOP signs as a place to check their phone. Also, even if you have the green light, look both ways, and so on.

But what if someone unpredictably slams on the brakes in front of you, or suddenly swerves into your lane without warning What if you drop the right wheels off the side of the road everyone has done it What if you are taken by surprise by a curve that is damp and the car starts to skid They may tell you to turn into the skid, but what does it actually feel like So, finally, here is the point of this article Teen drivers need to learn accident avoidance and vehicle control. This is not what they learn in “driver’s ed,” but things that you do not do in normal driving, which is all about being careful, easy, and smooth with no sudden changes in speed or direction. I am talking about becoming familiar and even comfortable with controlling a car in an emergency situation in order to hopefully prevent a crash, and not something they can (or should) be practicing in normal driving, or even on public roads at all.

Things such as: • What it feels like to brake hard and change lanes to avoid someone who swerves in your path.

• What it feels like when your vehicle starts to skid, and how to control it and hopefully correct it.

• How to safely deal with dropping the right-side wheels off the road.

• How it feels to maneuver a car at higher speeds with control.

So, you may ask, how can you teach your newer driver these critical skills Take

them to a teen driver school. Please. It will be one of the most valuable days of your, and your child’s, life.

I recommend this to all parents of new drivers when they are here for a checkup or other office visit. Many of you have already had that conversation with me and know about these kinds of schools. My two most recommended classes are: Street Survival ( streetsurvival.org ), and B.R.A.K.E.S. ( https://putonthebrakes.org ) Street Survival is a roving course that is sponsored by Tire Rack (an online tire store) and the BMW Car Club of America, and is in NC once or twice a year (check their website for schedules). Brakes teaches the same skills, is also held around the country, but is based at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and has regular days there. The main difference between these two schools is that at Brakes you drive their cars, and at Street Survival you drive your own car, or the car you will be driving. All that is required is a valid Learner’s Permit, but I would strongly recommend at least a little experience to get the full benefit.

Both courses are full day (8 hour) classes, and both involve some classroom

instruction, but also extended time alone in the car with an instructor, usually in 30–45 min. sessions on each skill. And here’s the best part: Street Survival costs all of $75 and Brakes is officially free but they require a $99 deposit to hold your place. I would be surprised if you ask for the deposit back. These classes would be worth almost any price, but the fact they are so cheap is amazing, removing cost as a barrier for nearly everyone.

Please consider taking your child to one or both of these courses, if at all possible.

The two I have told you about are cheap and worth far more than their price. There are also some other schools in the region that are a little more involved (Virginia International Raceway hosts one, and BMW has a Teen Driver school at their factory near Spartanburg with significantly higher price tags if you are looking for even more.

While I did not know about Brakes until later, I took my daughter to Street Survival not long after she got her license a few years ago. Let’s just say she had all the enthusiasm that a teenage girl, made to get up at 5am—on a Saturday morning— could muster. You can probably imagine, maybe even feel, the eye rolls and the huffs. Suffice it to say she had a blast, impressed me with a ride (in the back seat) around the course with her instructor at high speed and perfect control, and was asking to go back! You can’t beat that.

The only casualty of the day was losing a fog light from nailing a cone at full speed in the slalom course. (She is not one to hold back, if you have not met her. I replaced it easily. It was worth it.) My son will be attending both schools in the near future.

As I wrote above, this may be one of the most important days you spend with your child and they will actually have fun, too, in spite of themselves.

THE PEACE TREE FROM HIROSHIMA: THE LITTLE BONSAI WITH A BIG STORY This multi-award-winning picture book by Sandra Moore is based on actual events that occurred almost 400 years ago. The story is cleverly told from the perspective of a little bonsai tree the author nicknamed “Miyajima,” after the Japanese island where it was born.

“In 1625, when Japan was a land of samurai and castles, I was a tiny pine seedling. A man called Itaro Yamaki picked me from the forest where I grew and took me home with him.” Itaro cared for the white pine for 50 years; shaping it into a beautiful bonsai tree. The bonsai made its home in Hiroshima for centuries. In 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima the first bomb e ploded just two miles from the Yamaki home. Astonishingly, the Yamaki home and the 350-year-old bonsai which sat on a bench behind a wall survived the horrific bombing. In 1976, as part of a special Bicentennial gift and gesture of friendship between Japan and America (two countries that had been enemies during WWII), the Yamaki family donated the beloved bonsai to the United States. It stands today in the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. and is affectionately referred to as the “Yamaki pine,” in honor of the devoted family that lovingly trimmed and pruned it through the years, and which was deemed the “Peace Tree” by the Arboretum staff.

WANGARI’S TREES OF PEACE: A TRUE STORY FROM AFRICA Jeanette Winte tells the true story of environmentalist Wangari Maathi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contribution to world peace through the Green Belt Movement in her home country in Africa. As a young girl, Wangari excelled in school, and earned a scholarship to attend college in the United States. After earning a master’s degree in biological sciences, she returned to her homeland and was saddened to see that the former lush landscape had been drastically altered. The deforestation efforts had left the ground dry, barren, and stripped of the trees she loved as a child. She knew that if something was not done, soon all the trees would be gone, and so would clean water and firewood for cooking. Wangari rolled up her sleeves and began making a change right in her own backyard by planting nine seedlings in 1977. Her passion, drive, and determination to promote change began a movement, and one by one, local women began planting indigenous seedlings, too. By 2004, more than 30 million trees had been planted by members of her Green Belt Movement in Kenya alone and in time, it had spread to 30 other African countries, and beyond. In African tradition, a tree is a symbol of peace. After accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, Wangari planted a andi flame tree at the base of Mount enya.

Extension Activities: SCIENCE AND ART The word “Bon-sai” is a Japanese term which, literally translated, means, “planted in a shallow container.” This art form has been around for over a thousand years. The goal is to create artistically a “miniaturized, but realistic, representation of nature in the form of a tree that is pruned and typically shaped to keep under 4 feet in height.” (bonsaiempire.com). Bonsai are not genetically dwarfed plants—any tree species can be used to grow a bonsai, although trees with a woody trunk and smaller leaves or needles are easier to design (e.g. juniper, maple).

Make a Potato Bonsai: 1. Collect supplies—a sprouted potato (no leaves yet), pea gravel, potting soil, a shallow container with drainage holes (a margarine tub works great), and scissors.

2. Decide which side of the potato from which you want to grow your bonsai and lay the

potato with that side facing up. Fill the container with potting soil about -way up the potato. Then use pea gravel to fill the container up to the ½-way mark on the potato. Add water and place in a sunny window.

3. In 1–3 weeks, leaves will begin to grow. Discard leaves that grow beneath the gravel line and keep the leaves that grow from the part of the potato above the soil. You can begin to trim the leaves at this time. Go slowly and do not cut too much off at first. Continue to water it once a week and have fun shaping and pruning your very own bonsai! (gardeningknowhow.com) LITERACY An after-school club in Massachusetts worked for 10 years to create the biggest book in the world on the topic of peace. The book is 10’ x 12’ and boasts a huge collection of photos, letters, artwork, and even songs in response to questions about ways to achieve world peace. They received replies from children, teachers, veterans, soldiers, religious leaders, and even such Nobel Laureates as Nelson Mandela, President Jimmy Carter, and the Dalai Lama. In like fashion, create your own “peace collection.” Ask family, friends, and others in your community for their opinions about peace. Add your own thoughts, feelings, artwork, poems, etc. to design a unique work of art, book (a spiral notebook works great), computer generated product, or some other creation. Here are a few questions to get you started: • What is peace • What is the most peaceful place you know Why • What would it take for the world to be more peaceful • What image comes to mind when you think of peace

TIP: Play the “I Spy” game when a child enters a new building, kitchen, or restaurant. This game teaches children to become aware of their surroundings, and to practice identifying shapes.

TIP: Take a leaf, for instance, and have your child draw it free-handed; then, fold the paper in half, and discuss how the use of symmetry and individual shapes can create a likeness to the actual object.

NUMBERS Beyond the recognition of numbers, children become instantly fascinated with learning number patterns, double digits as well as the value of one hundred, a thousand, or a million.

Encourage your child to read speed limit signs, restaurant and grocery store prices and, of course, discuss the purpose of the decimal point.

COMPUTATION Some children view math as an overwhelming task of memorization; yet, there are ways to help elementary students learn how to approach math facts.

TIP: First, fold the computation sheet in half, and ask your child to complete all the facts that are considered easy. Remind children that double numbers can aid in learning other facts; for instance, if 7+7= 14; then, 7+8 =15 and 7+6=13 TIP: The rule of 9 is a quick tool to help empower young children. The number 8 added to 9, would result in subtracting one less than eight (equaling seven) and adding one group of 10; therefore, 9+8=17.

This “trick” works for subtraction, too. In 16-9, the child would only have to add one to 6 to arrive at the answer of 7. Once understood, children with a visual learning style will be able to grasp a firmer concept of adding and subtracting one less or one more.

PLAYING BOARD GAMES Words such as division, multiplication, and geometry can be intimidating.

A non-threatening way to increase children’s love of math is to have a family game night. Beginning in preschool, young children can learn how to move a pawn until they are able to count the dots on a die.

Every game which emphasizes a skill to enhance counting, learning patterns, understanding techniques and strategies, or deductive reasoning will build both confidence and an excitement about mathematics. The same games you loved in youth, such as dominoes, checkers, Yahtzee, Monopoly, and backgammon are still valuable today, especially if played as board games. Children need to observe parents and older siblings take their turn, and learn from their “play” and “mistakes.” By allowing children to talk through their turn, they, too, can benefit from making choices and taking risks.

TIP: Any board game which includes dice can promote a child’s confidence in adding two numbers together. Board games are a non-threatening way to teach basic computation. Out of cardboard, consider making larger dice with numbers greater than six. It will be a unique way to practice adding, or even subtraction.

HOMEWORK ANXIETY Encourage children to tackle the hardest subject first. The emphasis should be on talking through the directions and problems, and praising the child for reaching the answer. If answers are incorrect, it is important to guide your child by asking questions.

But the child needs to arrive at answers him- or herself. Mathematics is a process, and with practice and patience, the excitement and confidence will grow.

Advice for the High School Me

BY STACY LEIGHTON HIGH SCHOOL: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Most people agree it was one or the other. If I could Marty McFly this, if I could go back in time, here are a few things I might tell my High School Self and others: 1. If you know the answer, raise your hand. It’s cool to be smart.

2. We become like the people we spend the most time with.

Choose your friends wisely.

3. Stop obsessing over your pimple, everyone is too worried about their own to notice yours.

4. Slow down, enjoy your youth. Adulthood will come and it’s overrated.

5. Get organized. Where possible, get ahead of assignments.

The last minute is when other things may come up. (I.e., teachers don’t always know, or care, what other teachers have also ssigned.) . e selective in who you confide in. in high school.

7. Be the friend you’d like to have.

8. Avoid choosing one clique—mix it up. Life is more interesting with a variety of friends, and that way you will always have someone to sit with.

9. Never peak in high school. This is just a chapter in your life, it will end and a new one will begin. Believe me, no one at the office or neighborhood bar-b-que will even care if you were President of the Glee Club.

10. You will outgrow some friendships. That’s okay. It’s hard, but you’re making room for new ones.

11. EVERYONE is WEIRD, and we all think we’re normal.

12. Spend more time with your family, even if they annoy you.

You will miss them later and wish that you had.

13. Believe it or not, your parents DO remember high school, and they will understand. Talk to them.

14. Ease up on the make-up and NEVER “try something new” with your hair on picture day. Trust me on this one, it was the 80’s; it wasn’t pretty.

21. Treat others with respect and compassion, not judgment. We never truly know what another person may be going through.

22. Your body, your choice! It’s worth protecting.

23. If you don’t understand an assignment or are worried about your class progress, don’t be afraid to talk to your teacher.

Decorating Like the Griswolds Twelve

years ago, my soon-tobe husband received a unique invitation via text. We were invited to an honorary “Griswolding.”

The response was simple, a quick “Yes! We’ll be there!” On a Saturday evening, e citement flowed through the 12 arrivals, who stood surrounded by large cardboard and Rubbermaid boxes of stringed lights, bows, garlands, and extension cords, and had the intention of illuminating a friend’s yard in thousands of lights. With the only direction, “Be careful,” men and women worked together and carefully to cleverly cover the house, lamp posts, large and small trees and shrubs, and outline walkways, a few buildings and a garage, also covering the mailbox in strands of multi-colored lights. Similar to the moment when Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation stood with family to turn on the grand display, we, too, awaited a countdown to appraise our efforts. In fact, it was an extravagant exhibition assembled in just a few hours. The ultimate word was, “Wow!” Grand displays honoring the seasons of Halloween and Christmas continue to be a celebrated tradition. In driving down main roads or through neighborhoods, we often discover more people are decorating like the Griswolds, with flash and flair, and sometimes accompanying music. To ask anyone why they invest in lights and decorations, the answer is often humble. Quite simply, it is done in honor of celebrating the seasons.

You may be considering becoming more involved in exterior decorating for the Christmas holiday, yet wondering what would be the most cost-effective means of lighting. Many homes decorate more than one Christmas tree. When we love to see the lights and develop the festivity, it often feels right to expand to the outdoors.

OUR BREAKOUT YEAR This

year was a breakout year for my family, and not in the way my wife and I would’ve preferred, although we should have seen it coming—after all, parenting is a challenge, to say the least, because you never really know what to expect as you go along. Undoubtedly, as you experience similar events in your life with your child(ren), someone else will advise they went through the same thing. However, there never seems to be any way of knowing these things ahead of time, it’s always confirmation after it’s passed.

For instance, as a parent of a teenager, you know there will come a time when they don’t want to do such things as go on trips with you any longer, or at least some of them. Gone are the days of them being excited to take a weekend excursion to a place you haven’t visited before, or a day-trip to the mountains and so on. Instead, the teenage part of them kicks in and they decide they’d much rather be spending this time with their friends… away from their parents!

Even though you know this time will come eventually, somehow you never really seem to be prepared when it does. One reason is simply that they don’t give you advance notice they’re going to do this. Such as, “Hey Mom and Dad, you know how we always go to the mountains in the fall Well, when the trip comes around again in 6 months, I just want to give you a heads-up that I’ll be going camping that weekend.” It would still be a shocker, but at least you’d know.

Another even better response would be, “Hey Mom and Dad, I’m really going to enjoy our annual trip this year, and you should too, because next year I’ll be doing something else with my friends instead.”

Okay, I know this is a bit of a pipe dream to think parents could get this much advance notice of anything a teen would want to do, but it would help make the adjustment go smoother. Family trips, game night, festivals and other

assorted traditions are things we’ve enjoyed and looked forward to since our children were born. Then, all of a sudden, they change and decide they want to do something different. It works for them, but it’s difficult for the parents, who didn’t see it coming. If we had known that last year, for instance, was going to be the last time for (insert event here) then we would have enjoyed it more and relished in the moment a little longer. I’m not saying it doesn’t make you wish for another year of the family experience, but it is helpful to ease into the transition that teenagers are always putting you through.

But I guess that’s not the way it’s supposed to happen. There’s a philosophical reason for it, I’m sure, that I’m not aware of at the moment. Perhaps you have some ideas of your own. Regardless, here is where we are, and I know there will be plenty more of these moments to come along in the months and years ahead. It’s not fair to us parents, but it rarely is, as we raise our children through life. Parents bear the brunt of many things as their children grow and learn life’s lessons, and often without any appreciation at the moment. Then as time passes, and the children grow into adults and start their own families, they get an occasional glimpse of their past in their memories that shines a light on what their parents went through. In that moment, they garner an understanding that wasn’t there before when they were younger.

And if you’re fortunate, they tell you so, and it’s rewarding, even if the recognition is delayed by several years in the process.

I know I’ve had those moments with my parents, where I understand better now what they experienced. The older I get, the greater respect I have for the things they did for me and my siblings, and the special moments they allowed us to share and relish in our memories.

Hopefully, someday my children will do the same, until then… carpe diem.

SOCIALIZING YOUR CHILD TO Tips & Tricks for Parents

With

the holidays fast approaching, many parents are probably hearing the pleas, bargaining, and downright begging of their children for the latest in cell phones, tablets, or other devices. A common concern I hear among parents in this technology-driven era is how to keep track of their child’s online footprint or presence. We are living in unique times with the social media boom, much of which can have a dark shadow over it.

When nearly 90% of today’s teens report witnessing cyberbullying, and with an increase in the pre-teen and teenage suicide rate, and often a generational disconnect in social media use, it is a legitimate concern for today’s parents and grandparents to be fearful of their child’s social media usage and even where to begin monitoring it.

Here are some useful tips for beginning to monitor your child’s social media interactions.

Get educated.

Perhaps one of the most common things I hear from parents is, “I don’t know anything about Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Kik, Musical.ly, GroupMe, or Instagram.” Well, it’s time to learn. Just because you don’t use these apps or social media outlets, doesn’t mean you can’t become educated in them. If your kid is using them, I recommend creating an account yourself. A great place to start learning about apps, websites, and overall statistics and information are resource websites like commonsensemedia.org or teensafe.org. YouTube also has several video series on different apps, how they are used, dangers to look out for, and tips/ tricks for parents. Consider apps like Mama Bear or Bark, where you can pay a monthly or annual fee to link your child’s social media apps and Internet history to your phone. You can receive alerts to warn you of inappropriate activity, cyberbullying, or any other potential issues. You can also receive alerts from these apps if your child disables them on their phone.

Be honest and set expectations.

Have a sit-down conversation with your child about your expectations for their mobile device use and your policy on social media use. Stand firm with your e pectations and remember that somehow we all survived a time without mobile devices, and if need be, they can, too (don’t be afraid to take the devices away). It is absolutely not out of the question to require that your child turn in his/her cell phone at night, in fact, it is highly recommended. It is not out of the question to require one of the above-mentioned monitoring apps stay on their device. Create a “device contract” with your expectations and rules in writing and have your child sign it. These are rules to be followed in order to keep the device—if any of the rules are broken, the device goes away.

Explain and model appropriate social media behavior.

So often we tell our children what not to do on social media—“Don’t be a cyberbully,” “Don’t post inappropriate pictures,” “Don’t add people you don’t know as friends.” So often we forget to show them what is appropriate social media behavior. Work with your child to learn what an appropriate post is. Have open conversations about what is worth sharing and what is not. This can help explain and express the permanence of what they share online.

Find someone “cooler” than you to be a mentor.

Now, of course, we as parents, even Millennial parents, like to consider ourselves pretty cool. We like to think we are approachable enough for our kids to openly talk to and share all the new fads and trends with. But, come on, we remember what it was like to be teenagers…the time where our parents knew nothing. Consider enlisting the help of someone your child may deem “cool” to help be your eyes and ears on your child’s social media accounts. Consider an older cousin or sibling, a church member, a neighbor, someone who is in the young adult age bracket (18–24 preferably) who can friend your child on Facebook, Snapchat, Kik, Musical.ly, Instagram, GroupMe etc., and can secretly alert you if they see anything inappropriate or questionable on your child’s account (be it from your child or about potential cyberbully situations).

The truth of the matter is, it is hard to keep up with the latest and “coolest” trends in the social media atmosphere. As a

parent, you may think your child won’t get caught up in social media drama or can navigate it on their own if you just talk to them about it, but the reality is, most adolescents need direct involvement from their parents to help ensure their social media and web-based interactions stay appropriate and safe.

Social media doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon, so prepare yourself to be hands-on in socializing your child to social media.

The Quiet Sibling: Lessons I Learned in an Outgoing Family

Here’s

my family in a nutshell: loud, energetic, entertaining, and very outgoing. I love them to bits! But it’s not easy being the only quiet sibling in a family that keeps talking. Here are the wisdom nuggets I have collected…

It’s okay to stand out.

During my teen years I was uniquely quiet. I wouldn’t even talk to my teachers sometimes!

I always felt pressured to socialize more, so I wouldn’t be so quiet. I also felt guilty because of my quietness, and wanted to be louder and more entertaining, like my siblings. My older sister and brother always encouraged me to speak more, so I could have more friends. Little did I know back at the time that trying to “blend in” with others would diminish the very thing that set me apart my quiet confidence. So, I learned it first from home, with my own family get used to being a little different from others.

But in a good way, because it’s better to be noticeable than to be forgotten.

When the quiet speaks, the world listens. My siblings know I don’t waste words when I speak. Are you familiar with that stereotypical quiet character in movies or sitcoms who only speaks when they have something wise and

timeless to say Well, that’s me at times. When someone says something relevant every time they open their mouths, people are bound to listen, because chances are, that quiet person may not repeat themselves. I’ve noticed that whenever I need to say something in the midst of raging voices, the table gets silent while I serve up my food for thought.

Ilessbecame numb to teasing. I was raised by a pack of comedians who typically express affection through harmjoking and teasing. It’s one of their many love languages. Although being teased by my older siblings for my quietness used to hurt me, this helped me to gird myself to handle the real world picking on me because of my quiet nature. This was another lesson I learned from family: people are going to tease you for being different. Now when people make fun of me for being quiet, or even when they cast strange glances at me, I just let it roll off. Sometimes I even laugh.

I learned to speak up!!

Anyone who is soft-spoken like me is probably used to their voice being drowned out by louder folks. That was me growing up and, admittedly, sometimes it still happens today. At home, I would get frustrated when I finally had the nerve to speak my mind just to be talked over because my voice was too low. This really taught me how to be more assertive with my speaking and over the years—my mom can witness to this—my voice has gotten stronger, both physically and metaphorically. Sometimes I would actually shout, clap my hands, or bang on a table just to be heard. This might make me sound crazy but trust me, I’m not. Everyone gets passionate!

Sometimes a family—or a group of any kind—needs that one quiet and stable person to keep things balanced. My older brother says this about me. He believes I keep our family centered because I e ude a calming energy. My mother once called me the flower in the middle of a field of wild plants.

We feed off energy in our home. When one of us is elated, everyone else feels the same way. When someone is upset, the mood dampens quickly. I believe that every group needs that one person—at least one—whom they can look to for peace and stability.

When tempers flare, that one quiet person can help e tinguish the situation.

Iquietness foundas astrength and peace in being myself. It took a long time for my family to look at my strength. It probably took me even longer to appreciate my character. Because of my quietness, I always thought something was wrong with me. But during my venture in college, I discovered what was “wrong” was actually right all along; I just had a hard time understanding it. Now I can say that I wear my quiet power proudly.

Holiday Traditions throughout the World

holidays are a memorable time for many. It’s the season for decorating, singing, and enjoying each other’s company. During this season, people have their own special traditions. From Christmas to Hanukkah to St. Lucia’s Day, let’s take a look at some of the various holiday traditions throughout the world.

Christmas: This Christian holiday celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is a religious and cultural holiday. During Christmas, people will exchange gifts, decorate trees, attend special services at church, mail holiday cards, and eat hearty meals with family and friends. Another favorite tradition is Santa Claus. Within the Greek and Russian Orthodox churches, the holiday is held 13 days after the 25th, on the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, when it is believed that the Three Wise Men finally arrived at Jesus in the manger. Some fun facts about well-known Christmas traditions are: in 1931, construction workers put the first Christmas tree in Rockefeller Plaza; poinsettias were brought from Mexico to America in 1828; and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created in 1939 in a poem used to bring customers to the Montgomery Ward department store.

Hanukkah: For eight days in November or December, the Jewish holiday Hanukkah or Chanukah occurs. Also known as the Festival of Lights, the holiday commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C. At this temple, one day’s worth of oil burned for eight days in it. Lighting of the menorah, food, games, and gifts are just a few traditions of Hanukkah. The menorah is a nine-branched candelabra holding nine candles. Each night during the eight days, another candle is added after sundown and the ninth candle, the shamash, is used to light the others. Blessings are recited during the lighting and the menorah is kept on a windowsill.

Potato pancakes, latkes, and jam-filled donuts, sufganiyot, are served in Jewish families. As for games and gifts, dreidels are spun and presents that are thoughtful and meaningful are given. According to historians, gift-giving took off in the 1950s when child psychologists and rabbis started using gifts to make post-Holocaust Jewish children happy about their heritage and not sad about missing Christmas.

Kwanzaa: Based on ancient African harvest festivals, the word wan aa means first fruits of the harvest in Swahili. Held from December 26th to January 1st, the holiday is a time when many African-Americans celebrate their African culture and heritage. Created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa traditions include meditations, decorating houses, wearing culturally significant clothing, and ceremonies with drumming and music. In addition, there are seven core principals related to African heritage. Kwanzaa symbols are a mat, a candle holder with seven candles, corn, and unity cups, as well as, the black, red, and green flag, African books and artwork.

St. Lucia’s Day: Known to honor the saint of the third and fourth century, St. Lucia’s Day is celebrated on December 13th.

The holiday was started by stories told by monks who brought Christianity to Sweden. In 304, St. Lucia was a young Christian girl who was killed for her faith and martyred. It is said that she secretly brought food to the Christians being persecuted in Rome. St. Lucia would wear candles on her head, leaving her hands free to carry food.

Today, holiday traditions are celebrated by girls in white dresses with red sashes around their waists, and a crown of candles on their heads. In addition, national Lucias are chosen to visit hospitals and nursing homes. While there, they sing a song about St. Lucia and hand out ginger snap biscuits, known as pepparkakor. Families will gather and eat lussenkatts for breakfast, which are buns flavored with saffron and raisins. St. Lucia’s Day is celebrated in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Bosnia, and Croatia.

The beauty of all the holidays is that they all hold a special meaning for people across the world. In addition, they all offer everyone a feeling of peace on earth at the end of the year.

HOW TO BE PRESENT DURING THE HOLIDAYS IN A SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD

Tips on capturing the moments without taking away from the memory-making

winter weather, gift shopping, your Mother insisting nobody touch the gifts under the tree until she snaps a photo for her Facebook. Some things just make it feel like the holidays! All kidding aside, while the holidays are a time for memory-making, the world has changed in a way where these special moments are no longer just our own. Social media has changed this by allowing people to share everyday moments with the click of a button.

So how do you stay in the moment while sharing your holiday season with others? It doesn’t have to mean completely going off the grid! It can be as easy as reminding yourself how special this time of year is, and that being present is the best gift you can give.

1. SET BOUNDARIES The same way you might think about watching TV or eating sweets, setting up boundaries for social media can help as a reminder not to go overboard. Sometimes that voice in your head tells you to grab your phone to let people know what you’re up to, but how often you listen to that voice matters. Setting up boundaries for how often you post or login when you have company or are out with others can be helpful. And remember— those photos you snap aren’t going anywhere! You can save them to share later, and guess what? People will still love seeing them! The same thing goes for “checking in” on social apps.

This is a terrific way to ignore your cell phone, but also remove the unnecessary security risks of letting people know you’re not home.

2. STOP COMPARISON IN ITS TRACKS Your family are gathered around opening their gifts and you are having a great evening. That is until you login online to see photos of your friend’s holiday cruise with her family. In one second your mood shifts and your concentration is somewhere else. “Must be nice,” you think as you recall the small budget you had to spend on your own family this year. Unfortunately, so many people forget that what you see on social media are the

best moments of people’s lives displayed. It’s easy to fall into the comparison game, even when you are at your happiest of moments. Remember this when you find yourself scrolling and be grateful for what makes your own holiday season special.

3. CAPTURE THE GOOD STUFF Believe it or not, family and friends may have mixed feelings about the “paparazzi” being present at every gathering. It can be easy to fall into the habit of having your smart phone glued to your hand. When you are selective of the moments you capture, not only do you find it easier to put the phone down, but you’re left with genuine keepsake photos to savor down the road.

Photos of the dessert table may not mean much in years to come, but the ones of your nephew playing dreidel for the first time will.

4. SHARE THE JOY In those moments where your sharing a quick status update or posting photos of the gift you got from your spouse, don’t forget to share the joy! It may sound funny, but a “like” or a comment can go a long way. Social media can sometimes feel isolating and the warmth of friendship someone feels when you comment on how cute their kids are or how great they look in their Christmas Eve outfit really can make someone’s day. So while you’re sharing, be sure to take a minute or two to give some of your Facebook friends or Instagram followers a little love.

5. ENJOY THE MOMENT Many of the fondest memories come from this special time of year. The Facebook post about you and your friends at the tree lighting isn’t going to be what you hold on to years down the road, it’s the memory you have of being there with them.

You want to enjoy every moment to the fullest and that means letting go of anything that distracts you from the “now.” Take photos that make you smile and share updates on social media about your experiences, but don’t let anything get in the way of really being in the moment and enjoying every aspect of your celebration.

~1 Timothy 6:11 December means Christmas! Christmas is the day we celebrate Jesus having been born in a manger—the best present ever! I hope you hear the story many times this month. But there is much more to Jesus than just being born in a stable and having shepherds and wise men come to visit.

You probably know he died on a cross and then came back to life and went to live in heaven with his Father. But what about all the years in between? Have you ever thought about Jesus being a kid like you and doing kid things like you do? Let’s try to imagine it.

He learned how to feed himself. Do you think he ate his vegetables? He learned how to dress himself. Tying those sandals on his feet might have been kind of tricky.

He helped his mom and dad and, as he got older, he probably had chores to do. He went to school. Did he have a computer or a cell phone? No, but I’m sure he played games with his friends and neighbors. Do you think he ever got put in “time out” for doing something wrong—like when he stayed in the temple while his mom and dad had already headed for home? The story (in Luke 2:41–52) has a happy ending, and says that Jesus grew up, just like you’re growing up. He learned to love and obey his parents and to love and obey his Heavenly Father.

If you’re healthy, your body grows without you even thinking about it. But the inside (who you really are) needs some help. Your family and your teachers are helping you grow to be the best you can be. Going to church and Sunday school are helping you, too. Reading your Bible and praying will help you even more.

About 100 years ago, Joyce Kilmer wrote a poem that says, “Only God can grow a tree.” And only God can grow you up to be like Jesus—kind, gentle, patient, and loving. The Bible will help you want to do good things and show you when you’re going the wrong way. (2 Timothy 3:16 and 17) December means the year is coming to an end, but the gift of Jesus doesn’t end.

When you help put away the Christmas decorations and presents, don’t put Jesus away. Keep praying and learning and growing to be more like him.

It’s

got to be the most famous story of all time. A pregnant Mary who was “great with child” and her soon-to-be husband Joseph must journey to Bethlehem to be counted in the census. After a long, tiring trek, there is no room in the inn, so the expectant couple retreats to the only shelter offered…a smelly, dirty stable, where the Savior of the world would be born.

For so long, I’ve skimmed over that famous line from Luke 2, “there was no room for them in the inn,” just blindly accepting the fact that it was merely a “no-vacancy” issue that led to Jesus’ humble manger birth.

But, wait a minute! Not so fast! Couldn’t the owner of the guesthouse have MADE room? I mean, after all, you’ve got an exhausted dad and a laboring mother-to-be standing at your doorstep, desperately needing a place to be for the night and you can’t find some corner of your home for them to sleep? Couldn’t the innkeeper have offered up his own quarters? Or, maybe some of his guests, had they known the situation, would have been willing to “scrunch together” to make room for the couple.

We know how the story ends; no such accommodations were made, and the baby Jesus was wrapped in swaddling cloths and laid in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn.

I’m sad for the innkeeper because he missed an incredible blessing. The first Christmas could have happened in his house! Instead, he probably slept comfortably in his own bed while the miracle was happening in the barn out back.

For the Win In

just about every great movie about football, there is the same, climactic scene. The underdog team is struggling, and their coach is calling plays that everyone in the crowd disagrees with. But, the coach ignores his fanatical detractors and sticks with his plan, leading his team to a miraculous championship win. The same people who were once criticizing and bad-mouthing the embattled coach are now lauding him as a hero.

It’s a scene that not only plays out in many football movies, it also plays out in many of our churches.

However, instead of a coach and a critical crowd, this scene involves a pastor and nay-saying members of his congregation.

Hopefully, your pastor was chosen to lead your church because he or she is educated, experienced and deeply connected to the Lord. He has a plan for your church and dreams for her future. But, just like the underdog coach, he often has to deal with loud voices of criticism from detractors who do not share his vision.

If your pastor is “calling plays” that don’t make sense to you, maybe it’s because you don’t understand his plan for the church. Maybe you’re not seeing the bigger picture. It’s worth sitting down with your pastor over a cup of coffee and asking him what his vision is for the church. Better yet, ask how you and your family can help make his dreams a reality.

Our pastors don’t need spectators, they need team members, who will join them in winning the spiritual war within our churches, communities and our world.

I’m also reminded of the story of the innkeeper that I might just as easily miss the miracle of Christmas if I’m not intentional about making room in my heart and my home for Jesus. It is easy at this time of year to pack our days and nights so full of busy-ness that we get to the other side of December, realizing we’ve never really spent any time observing the birth of Christ.

Don’t miss the miracle of Christmas this year. Create spaces in your life to be still and soak in the significance of the Season. Evict the unwanted guests (stress, to-do lists, unrealistic expectations) that may be crowding Jesus out. Be intentional about making room.

Be A Rebel

the season and throughout the world— people of all denominations have one thing in common at this time of year: they are celebrating Christmas. Mind you, as a society, we’ve done our fair share to dilute the true point of the holiday with images of Santa Claus and the politically correct “Happy Holidays,” greeting. But this article isn’t about celebrating Christmas. This is about celebrating the birth of the greatest rebel who ever lived. Jesus Christ.

Rebel?

Yes, rebel. But I don’t mean “rebel” in the sense of disorder and disobedience. I mean “rebel” in the sense of a one-of-a-kind original. A true revolutionary in every sense of the word.

Jesus challenged the status quo then, and His life is still challenging the status quo of our “enlightened” society. He encouraged people to turn the other cheek. He encouraged us to love our enemies. Jesus overruled the idea that we can obtain salvation through living by the rulebook, but instead, broke the chains holding us to an unattainable feat, and offered up Himself as a willing sacrifice. He made salvation possible through grace and grace alone.

Everything He said and did went against the norm. From talking to a woman at the well to befriending the lowest and most hated people in polite society. Jesus, ever-perfect in His obedience to God, broke every rule of mankind.

The world’s god(s) take(s) many shapes—money, power, drugs, anything that takes the focus from Jesus. But Christians are told to keep their eyes on Christ. To allow Him to direct us, and trust Him enough to follow, even when we can’t see where He’s going!

Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Let’s face it—it’s not easy to be a Christian!

That’s why Jesus has said, it’s a narrow road.

Too many are comfortable walking on the wide road with the masses and avoiding criticism, not realizing they are headed to eternal destruction.

Ironically, we live in a world of sheep, baah’ing on about being different—“Be yourself! You’re one-of-a-kind! Embrace your individuality!” Of course, all that is said with a footnote—“Unless you’re one of those weirdo Christians. In that case, you’re wrong.”

Rebels to what the world says is okay.

But that brings us to another Alice Cooper quote, and possibly my favorite: “Drinking beer is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy.

But being a Christian, that’s a tough call.

That’s rebellion.”

Later in his life, he said, “Being a Christian isn’t for sissies.

It takes a real man to live for God—a lot more than to live for the devil.”

If you want to be revolutionary in this world, it’s not going to happen by following the masses. It’s going to come from being strong in faith and committed to following Christ, even if you are left walking all alone.

Not as the world sees “rebellion,” but let us end this year, and prepare to begin a new one, through a commitment to reject the world’s ways and embrace what Jesus Christ taught us.

Let us focus on who God is and what Jesus did for us at Calvary. And be bold enough to walk that lonely, narrow path that leads straight to eternity with Jesus Christ.

Let’s be rebels.

A Keepsake preparation, but this year it has been heavy on my heart and a great source of comfort and joy.

My sister’s birthday is at the end of November. Every year my aunts would gift her with a Hallmark Keepsake ornament. By the time she moved off to college, she had at least one for every year of her life and was thus the largest ornament owner in the Bingham household of Pax Hill Rd.

This psalm proclaims the assurance of God’s protection over God’s people. It is a psalm of ascents, recited by those on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land as they journeyed up the mountain of Jerusalem to celebrate holy festivals. In this psalm we hear the word “keep” repeated over and over:

Every year, the Christmas tree went up on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

We were each allowed to adorn the tree with “our” ornaments. I was always jealous of my older sister because she had so many more decorations to put on the tree than I did. Not only did she own more ornaments, but all of hers were professionally crafted by Hallmark! Mine were mostly home-made, well-meaningbut-not-excellently-executed crafts: aka lots of glitter and popsicle sticks. Our family tree was always an amalgamation of novelty-store-purchased treasures and recycled toilet paper rolls, painted to bedazzle by yours truly.

He who keeps you will not slumber (3); He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep (4); The Lord is your keeper (5); The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life (7); The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore (8).

Emphasis is placed on God the Keeper.

We then are the subject of God’s keeping. We are “kept.” We are the keepsake.

Too often our joy in the holidays can be muted by the silencing voices of competition: who got the best gift?; how much money did they spend on me?; whose decorations are most impressive?; who has the most ornaments?

As you read and pray Psalm 121, I hope you will see yourselves as the treasured keepsake God created. Regardless of who you are, the color of your skin, where you were born, where you work, what language you speak, or what tax bracket (or new tax bracket) you locate yourself in, YOU ARE LOVED. May each of you feel the warmth and love of the holiday season and keep on the Sunny Side of Life.

The Ministry of Music

When

King David wrote Psalm 98, and penned the infamous line, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord,” he didn’t say anything about the noise being on key. He simply said, “Make a joyful noise.” Thankfully, as long as our praise is sincere and heartfelt, it’s all music to God’s ears, no matter how out of tune we may sound to our neighbors. And fortunately, there are also talented, gifted vocalists and musicians who lend both their time and talent to make up the church choirs around the country. So their joyful noise is indeed joyful to hear, too.

Lest you assume that a church choir simply gets together to dress in robes on Sunday morning, think again. There is a ministry to the music we enjoy each week.

Take, for instance, the church choir at Ardmore Baptist Church. Led by David Fitzgerald, with musical accompaniment

by Jonathan Williams, the Ardmore Baptist Choir is comprised of dozens of men and women who spend far more than a few minutes singing together on Sunday morning. Being a member of the music ministry is a collective team effort, with the goal to honor God through musical worship and praise. In fact, Ardmore’s music program is hardly limited to the adult choir, but also includes the senior adult choir, children’s choirs, youth choir, hand bell choirs, instrumental and vocal ensembles, as well as various instrumentalists and soloists who frequently make appearances in worship services. It’s a truly multi-faceted musical ministry that is built on worshiping Jesus.

The ministry of music—whether traditional or contemporary—is a vitally important part of the worship experience. And it should never be undervalued. The men and women who serve in church choirs spend hours breaking apart songs, not just by the notes, but by the context of the lyrics and overall message and tone that needs to be delivered. There’s a theatrical element, too, that musical worship includes, and it adds a significant oomph to the final performance.

And the outcome benefits us all.

In fact, worship music provides: 1. A deeper understanding of theology. Hymns and worship music teach God’s grace and mercy in a melodic pattern, helping ingrain Biblical truth in our minds and hearts.

2. Emotional experiences. Music moves us. Period. There are certain songs that evoke memories and emotions that we can’t express in any other form.

3. Connection with Jesus Christ, as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ. Worship music crosses generational divides and unites us as a family of believers.

4. An opportunity to obey Biblical instructions. Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” 5. An opportunity to easily write God’s words on your heart. Many hymns are Biblical passages set to music. As we are told to hide God’s words in our heart (Psalm 119:11), having them set to music is an easy way to learn them, especially if memorization isn’t a strong point.

With all this said—thank your choir director. They don’t choose songs that sound pretty. They choose songs based on the message and relevance of the worship experience. And thank your choir members and musicians. Thank them for their commitment to leading worship and praise through song.

It’s a GRAND Life Taking Flight

Last

month I wrote about moving to Wilmington.

I ended by saying I was going to Disney World. It wasn’t a joke. The trip had been planned months before the move presented itself. It seemed like a crazy idea to drop boxes and take off with so much to do, but as it turned out, it was just the break we needed. Having not moved in nearly 30 years, I had forgotten how stressful moving was — not to mention how much “stuff” we had accumulated in that time. Plus, this was our first long distance move, other than when we were young with no children and our move consisted of very little. To say my husband and I were beyond tired is an understatement, and what better place to have fun and chill than Disney World?

We were going with our youngest daughter and family.

The thought of driving all the way to Orlando with an 18-month old confined to a car seat the whole way gave us pause. The decision was quickly made that our daughter, granddaughter, and I would fly and let my husband and son-in-law drive. My daughter and I would not have to worry about dealing with luggage or items for the baby other than the few things she would need for the flight. We did have to drive to Raleigh to catch a non-stop flight, but we would have a little time for her to walk around to get some energy out before boarding. Or, so we thought.

The drive took longer than planned and, although I had the TSA pre-check status, my daughter did not and her security line was long. She had to wrangle the baby, plus her diaper bag and stroller. I got right through, but since I was carrying the cooler bag with baby food, I had to wait while they checked all of it out. My mind shut down as I raced to our gate to see if the flight was boarding instead of staying to help my daughter.

As we were flying Southwest, we had a number instead of a confirmed seat. bviously, it has been a long time since I have flown with small children. When any of our girls were under two years old, we just showed up at the airport,

boarded the flight and had the baby sit on my lap. That doesn’t work today. You have to contact the airline ahead of time and bring proof of their age. Fortunately, my daughter knew this, had called Southwest and Delta our return flight and had the baby’s passport - yeah, I know, an 18-month old with a passport.

We finally boarded and luckily found two aisle seats across from one another. I think 90% of the passengers were headed to Disney World, and it was a fun trip — the flight attendants were very entertaining. There was a mom sitting next to my daughter, so she was understanding about what to e pect flying with a toddler — especially one who was missing her nap. Thank goodness she was. About ¾ of the way through the flight, my sweet granddaughter was ready to get off the plane. She had sat as long, had as many books read, and had eaten as much as she could stand. My daughter got her phone out to entertain her and in a split second, the baby had swatted it out of her hand where it, of course, hit the other mom’s nearly full cup of Coke. My daughter was horrified, but the woman could not have been more gracious. Her reaction to the cola going all over her vacation papers, and some on her, was one of such kindness and no apology needed, that I wanted to hug her.

The advice this column hopes to impart when flying with an infant is the following: help the one with the baby by always being aware; carry on as little as possible, but do bring some of their favorite books and toys bring finger foods and milk or formula in a small cooler bag; have a small stroller; and the knowledge that most of the other passengers understand what you’re dealing with. And for those that don’t? Well, maybe one day the shoe will be on the other foot.

Can I Pet Your Dog?

S

ervice dogs (or any animal assigned as a service animal) are usually working when we see them out and about. They may even be in training and wearing one of the harnesses that identifies them as in training.

Whether they’re working as a full-time service animal or are in training, there are specific guidelines that we need to be mindful of when we’re tempted to interact with them.

Service dogs have the right to be wherever their handler is. In fact, they have access to all public facilities by federal law. Documentation credentials are not required. A business owner may ask only two questions—whether the dog is a service dog and what service the dog provides.

The primary guideline is never to approach a service dog without first asking permission from his handler. Be prepared for the response to be “No,” depending on the circumstances. This is a close-knit team and the handler depends on the responses from the dog for basic daily tasks.

Any small distraction could potentially put a person at risk or create a vulnerable situation.

As much as you may want just to pet the dog, resist. The dog is working and needs to keep focused on his handler. If you think about the times you’ve seen a service dog, most really don’t notice anything other than their person.

That’s part of their training—to focus, anticipate, and respond instantly.

Speak to the person first, not the dog. bviously, the dog is needed; we don’t need to ask or know why. Respect the person’s need for a service dog and their privacy. They’ve probably been asked more times than they care to recall what their dog’s name is, what breed, and on and on.

While it’s natural to offer to help, it’s probably not needed. The dog is trained for whatever their handler needs assistance doing and does it remarkably well.

Don’t offer water or food to a service dog. Most likely there’s a fi ed schedule for mealtime. and offering a treat would be too distracting.

Think about it. Would you like a stranger to offer food to your dog?

Even if the dog seems to be napping, he’s still in work mode and awaiting commands from his/her handler. As dog owners are well aware, a simple move can alert a napping dog.

Service dogs do get downtime; they don’t work all the time. Generally, when they’re home with their handler, they get to play and have their “doggie” time. Many times, when the service harness comes off, that’s the signal for rest and relaxation.

If you happen to be with your own dog, don’t let your dog engage with the service dog.

Service dogs are trained to serve in a variety of capacities. Dogs are trained based on their unique skill sets and teamed up with handlers who need assistance in a particular area. While some needs may be obvious, many are not. Seeing-eye dogs may be the easiest to identify; however, there are also hearing dogs who are trained to alert their handlers to ringing phones, doorbells, and any other sounds that we take for granted. Some are trained for mobility assistance, coping, medical alert, seizure alert, therapy—the list goes on. Bottom line, whatever the skills, service dogs make life easier and their support enhances the lives of those they are trained to serve.

Let’s give these working dogs the respect they earn every day for a job well done!

A Little Bit of Light in the Darkness

“Once upon a time, there was a mythical man named Jewa Claus. Jewa Claus helped the Jewish children celebrate Hanukkah by bringing light and celebration and gifts into their home, by teaching Jewish children to be proud of who they are, and by helping non-Jewish children understand the Hanukkah story, and that Hanukkah is not the Jewish Christmas.”

This is a story my older son, now in second grade, told me last year. He was responding to what many call the December dilemma, that struggle that non-Christian Americans have around the winter holiday season.

Storytelling is an important Jewish tradition. We constantly reinterpret the stories in the Bible, and in light of our tradition, so they are relevant for the modern day. And what is more relevant to a Jewish boy growing up in North Carolina than a story to explain why Hanukkah is important, different than Christmas, yet relatable in some way to the ever-present Christmas decorations, music, and lights?

Hanukkah celebrates the value of religious freedom. It commemorates the victory of the small over the mighty, the light in the darkness, the continuity of a people. And for a Jewish boy in North Carolina, where Christmas is everywhere, making Hanukkah stand out is paramount.

After all, it is the generations of storytelling that ensure the preservation of our traditions. Especially when we are a minority population, an island of blue and white in a sea of red and green.

After all, how do we know the Hanukkah story, the tale of Jewish Maccabee warriors of old, who defeated the mighty Greeks while defending their own freedom of religion? How do we know the story of the miracle of the oil, the one small

portion that gave light for eight long days? Why do we eat latkes, or jelly donuts (sufganiyot), or other fried treats, to celebrate the miracle of the oil that shone so brightly to bring the Jewish people out of the dark era of religious persecution?

It is not because we all sit around together and read the Book of Maccabees, and it is not because Hanukkah is a strictly religious holiday with many explicit rules to follow. It’s because of storytelling, of course. Traditions, passed down through the generations, are adapted to give meaning today.

We light a nine-branched candelabrum, called a Hanukkah menorah, or Hanukkiah, which resembles the one in the ancient Temple in Jerusalem (although that one had seven branches). We eat fried donuts—a treat enjoyed by Moroccans and Algerians for centuries. We sing a song, “Rock of Ages,” or “Maoz Tzur,” which was written in 12th-century Europe. We play a gambling game with a 4-sided top, the dreidel, which was adapted from a German gambling game. And finally, the way we celebrate Hanukkah in America—with fried potato pancakes, gifts for eight nights, and vast cultural importance— started only in the early 20th century!

It is all because of storytelling, of course. Stories that teach us to respect other religious traditions, to shine a light in the darkness, to come together as families, and always, always, proudly to be who we are.

Perhaps you, too, should tell a story. Create a tale that explains what is going on in the world today, including the changes afoot, to your children. Weave a narrative that makes history, those events that happened in the distant past, relatable and important. Tell a story that helps your family celebrate its unique culture, religion, and traditions.

Just like the story of Jewa Claus, the mythical Jewish hero my son invented.

working as seasonal alentine’s Day help for a florist in the ake orman area, Allison Dahl knew she wanted to go into the floral business. ow, 10 years later, Dahl is the owner of Dahlia’s Floral Design & Vintage Décor in Clemmons, and offers customers a wide variety of lu ury floral designs and event styling.

“I remember sitting in on a wedding consultation with a bride and her mom. Everyone’s eyes were glazed over during the appointment and it felt as if the employees were just going through the motions. I knew right then that I could do the same thing, but do it better. I was raised to believe that I could achieve anything I put my mind to, and this was no exception,” said Dahl.

Dahlia’s Floral Design & Vintage Décor was started in 2007 in Dahl’s home. According to Dahl, over 450 events and weddings were designed on her kitchen counters between her and her mother, Maggie. After hearing about a space opening up beside Fraleigh’s outique, she jumped at the chance to finally create a storefront for her business. Even though the company’s location has changed, their mission of making a bride’s floral ideas for her wedding come true has stayed the same.

“We handle everything from the concept design and inspiration boards for brides who aren’t sure what they want, to all of the design work, and then to the actual setup at the event. Also, we’ll even help with repurposing donating the flowers after the event is over, such as giving them to hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice,” explained Dahl.

Weddings aren’t the only event Dahlia’s handles. They are also well known for designing floral arrangements for any type of event. The business has created pieces for birthday celebrations, bridal brunches, baby showers, bridal portrait shoots, styled shoots, and various functions for universities and hospitals in the area. Dahl states that no event is too big or too small. She also adds that they are currently working on several holiday “team building” classes for local companies.

Speaking of the holidays, Dahlia’s loral Design intage D cor is hosting their first Christmas Open House on December 9th, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, at their new retail store, located at 2626 Lewisville-Clemmons Road.

“We opened our doors on June 30, 2017, and we essentially started from square one with the retail shop. For our Christmas Open House, we’ll have fresh and faux greenery, lots of Christmas ornaments, soaps and candles, unique repurposed home décor, lots of smaller gift items, hostess gifts, etc. Also, we have funky vases, fresh flower arrangements with a grab-n-go section for gift givers on the run, jewelry, greeting cards and locally made gift items. The list goes on and on,” Dahl enumerated.

In addition, the Christmas Open House will include a cider and hot chocolate bar, appetizers and snacks, free giveaways, and a free gift with a $50 purchase.

While the company has big plans for December, they are already looking towards the next two years. “We are booking large events for 2018, 2019, and 2020. Turn a delicious strawberry into a healthy Christmas mouse snack with slivered almond ears and a cheese tail, perched perfectly on a cracker!

CHEESY CHRISTMAS TREE PULL-APART BREAD STRAWBERRY & CHEESE CHRISTMAS MOUSE

CHRISTMAS COOKIE POPCORN INGREDIENTS: ½ cup un-popped popcorn tsp. Almond extract tsp. Vanilla extract Salt Sprinkles, red and green assortment 2 Tbsps. butter 1 cups Vanilla candy melts

INGREDIENTS: Strawberries Sliced almonds String cheese Swiss cheese Whole wheat crackers DIRECTIONS:

1. For each “mouse,” cut two squares of Swiss cheese to fit the cracker, place on top and set aside.

2. Wash and pat the strawberries dry, removing the stem and carving a small hole for the “tail.”

Slice off a bit of the side of the strawberry that will serve as the bottom of the mouse, so it will sit flat on the cheese and cracker.

3. Insert two almond slivers for the mouse “ears” and peel a string of cheese to insert as the mouse “tail.”

4. Place each strawberry mouse atop the cheese and cracker and serve immediately.

Place in large bowl.

2. Mix together melted butter and extracts, then drizzle over the popcorn and stir to coat. Salt the popcorn mixture lightly.

3. Melt vanilla candy melts in microwave according to directions and drizzle over the popcorn mixture, stirring to coat.

4. Spread the mixture on a large baking sheet and add sprinkles.

5. Allow to sit until set. Break apart and serve in bowl or treat bags.

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. pizza dough ¼ cup butter, melted 7 Mozzarella sticks cup Parmesan, finely grated Rosemary, finely chopped Parsley, finely chopped Basil, finely chopped 1 Egg white, beaten Marinara sauce 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Cut mozzarella sticks into 33 1” pieces.

3. On a floured surface, divide pizza dough into two sections. Stretch and roll each section into a long rectangle, then cut the dough into 2” squares, for a total of 33. Wrap each piece of mozzarella in the dough, forming a tightly sealed ball. Place each ball seam-side down on the baking sheet, forming the shape of a Christmas tree. (The balls should be touching.)

4. Brush the beaten egg white onto the dough balls and bake until golden, 15–20 minutes.

5. While the balls are baking, whisk together the melted butter, Parmesan, and the chopped herbs. Brush onto the baked dough balls.

6. Serve warm with marinara for dipping.

Love One Another This Christmas Season

Christmas, without question, is my favorite time of the year. I love the music, the lights, the gift-giving and time with family. But with all the pageantry and commercialism swirling around, it’s easy to get distracted from what’s really going on, or what really happened. It all started about 2,000 years ago.

God saw fit to invade time and space through the gift of a newborn baby. It was a miracle of unfathomable proportions. To think that a young virgin of the lowest socio-economic order was to be the mother of the king of kings...wow! Yet while some of the most unlikely characters in the scene got it, so many others with their faces right in the story missed it.

This year at my place of worship, I am participating in a drama that has scenes representing more than a 50-year span. It is the story of a family business and three generations of sons that are dealing with hard life issues. While some of them have a church background, even though they know problems are real, they refuse to acknowledge their own sin in the situation and do what must be done... turn to God. You see, this happens all the time. I hear story after story of families getting together at the holidays, 90 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

only to sit and stare at each other or their devices, hoping the clock would tick faster to hasten their escape back to normalcy. Family is one of the best things to have, but if tensions exist, can be one of the hardest things to manage. Brokenness is real and painful and can be most clearly exposed to the family.

Jesus came into the world to be the solution for brokenness, not only to restore our relationship with God, but also to give us healing relationships with each other. He is the solution for racial prejudices. He is the counselor for shattered marriages. He is the fi for our co-dependencies... and He is the answer to those very difficult relationships we all have somewhere in life.

During the events of this original story, the lowliest of shepherds and the wisest of men got it. Sadly, while right under their noses, the innkeeper and the king missed it. They were too busy or too paranoid. This Christmas, don’t let this happen to you...don’t let the chance for restoration be missed, especially with the ones we love the most. Let’s all be willing to say “I’m sorry,” to put down our devices and our differences for a few minutes and listen, forgive, connect and restore.

ProStart®: Giving Students a “Taste” of Catering and Restaurant Management

ProStart® Academy is a magnet program at John F. Kennedy High School in Winston-Salem, NC, that gives students the exciting opportunity to learn about the art of cooking and managing restaurants by training with professional chefs and getting valuable classroom instruction, earning college credit and making money while in high school.

“Students begin training in the 9th grade with the foundational courses of Food & Nutrition 1 and Food & Nutrition 2 (10th grade). ProStart 1 and ProStart 2 are offered in the 11th and 12th grades in conjunction with 400 hours of internship to earn the ProStart C A Certificate of Achievement , a credential recognized for college credit, similar to AP courses in academics.

Our instructor, Chef Sherry Billings, teaches all of our students.

Although Food & Nutrition 1 is offered at every high school in the area, at , the 9th-grade students focus on specific skills to prepare them for their next three years in the program.

All of our students participate in our school-based catering enterprise. This ‘business’ provides many small activities, along with a few big ones, to offer students real work experience.

Recently, our students catered a luncheon meeting at JFK for the NC Restaurant and Lodging Association’s Board of Directors.

Through this event, our students gained experience in planning, selecting menu choices, costing, purchasing, cooking, serving, presentation and sanitation,” explained Nancy Harris, Career Development Coordinator & CTE Magnet Coordinator, JFK High School.

School and is one of four Career Technical Education Academies available at the magnet high school. The others include Construction & Design (Masonry), Health Sciences (Pharmacy Technician), and Creative Enterprises (Entrepreneurship). The ProStart students will participate in the NC ProStart Invitational (NCPI) on February 25th–27th, 2017. This competition, for both culinary and management teams, determines state representatives to the International ProStart Invitational in Rhode Island later in the spring. The top 5 teams receive scholarships and the first-place teams go on to represent C at the national event. There are two areas of competition: Management and Culinary.

“In the Management Competition, students must create a restaurant concept using demographics for a fictional town, ProStartville. The competition requires written reports, advertisements, flow charts, staffing and menu development along with verbal presentations to 5 groups of judges. The Culinary Competition involves students creating a 3-course meal in an hour. They are judged on everything—knife skills, presentation, teamwork, culinary skills, timeliness, sanitation, artistry and much more. Teams must also plan out in advance and bring to the competition all tools, spices, food etc.,” Nancy commented.

This year’s competition will be held at Johnson & Wales campus in downtown Charlotte, NC. It is a three-day event.

“We are looking for team sponsors to help Chef Billings offset the cost of the food for practice because students will make their dishes many times

between now and February. Other expenses include travel expenses, uniforms (all management and culinary team members must wear identical clothing and shoes) along with miscellaneous equipment, like hand trucks, coolers, and storage bins. We have to roll everything into the event space, set up and then pack up and roll it back out. This is an important part of practice, too,” stated Nancy.

Both culinary and management teams attended a day-long “Bootcamp” at Johnson & Wales on November 3rd. The Management team students had a day-long brainstorming, marketing, advertising and demographics training session with corporate representatives from chain restaurants, such as Longhorn Steakhouse, and independent advertising and marketing consultants from the Charlotte area. Students participating in the Culinary team training had a lot on their “plates.”

“The Culinary students participated in 2 sessions, a dessert plating training session focused on sauces and presentation.

If you ever wonder how those dots, swirls, swipes and shapes appear so perfect on your plate—that is what students learned to do during the morning session. The focus was on original designs and they had a lot of tasty practice with 4 sauces, chocolate cake and spoons. After lunch, the main dish session focused on following recipes, knife skills, and actual cooking skills. Students made a chicken and tomato sauté and practiced receiving feedback from the head chef, by saying, ‘Yes, Chef,’ often,” Nancy said.

No doubt that ProStart students gain a new perspective on catering and restaurant management, helping them in planning for a future in the industry. 1982 witnessed the birth of the first batch of Millennials.

Alongside its human companions, the Internet was born that very next year. The Internet matured alongside the Millennials and the effect their constant sibling-like association has had, and will have, on the workplace as Millennials enter the business world is the focus of this article.

The Millennial Generation or Generation Y (individuals born between 1982 and 2004) has been scrutinized perhaps more thoroughly than any other generation. It has accumulated many names throughout the past 34 years, including the “Look at Me” generation, the “Net Generation,” and “Generation Whine.” These nicknames can be attributed mainly to characteristics developed through the treatment they received from their parents throughout their youth and the existence of advanced technology in their day-to-day lives.

Parental pressure is a significant factor in the demeanor of this new wave of workers, parents placing high value on their children from a young age. They also pressure their children to take upper-level classes in high school, and apply to prestigious colleges. These tendencies are shown to intensify as Millennials pursue their first job. Due to the constant presence of the regular dictating force of their parents in their lives, it is not surprising that Millennials tend to desire a relationship with their first boss or supervisor, intending, no doubt, to replace their parents. This unique desire to form strong professional relationships is one of the benefits of growing up a Millennial, as it is expected to cause more sturdy organizations as a whole.

A flaw in the rearing of Millennials is the increasing prevalence of high self-esteem due to parents placing an exceptionally high value in their children’s future. Millennials’ self-esteem brews a desire for leadership roles. Though at first, this may seem like a positive characteristic, Millennials, unlike previous generations, are interested in leadership roles for more selfish reasons. Millennials are shown to desire to become leaders because of that role’s merits on a resume, and because of its favorable implications in society; therefore, they are less likely to be interested in advancing the lives of their charges. These negative driving forces may be shown to cause strife and ineffectiveness in the workplace.

Millennials are often begrudged due to their almost constant contact with social media and the Internet; however, researchers Myers and Sadaghiani take a new perspective. They view this unique characteristic as being a practical new skill in the workplace. After a quick look into the possible adverse outcome of exposure to high levels of technology, we will discuss its benefits*.

Millennials’ ability to collect an easy answer instantaneously causes a lack of motivation for them to delve deeper into the question posed. Therefore, they miss nuanced explanations of phenomena and alternative perspectives that may cause them to consider explanations of their own. This tendency is the fatal flaw in the Millennial Generation, bred at a young age to 96 / ForsythFamilyMagazine.com

depend on Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, and Wikipedia. Additional research, commenced by Hershatter and Epstein, maintains that “If Millennials are going to become valued knowledge workers; they must learn not only what information to gather, but also how to verify and understand it in context. In order to analyze, synthesize, and represent that information in a way that is relevant to the problem at hand, they will need to know more than how to scan; they need to learn to read deeply and between the lines.”† The shortcoming of instant information can easily be remedied if Millennials are open to the idea of “getting out what you put in” and garnering a higher respect for the resources available to them.

Millennials’ attitude toward teamwork is a positive characteristic, caused in the main by computer-mediated communication, and communication and information technology. Because geographical separation has less effect, hierarchies within businesses are seen to diminish, therefore increasing group participation. Additionally, the aptitude for creating online content displayed by Millennials is an attribute admired by most hiring organizations. Myers and Sadaghiani found that 28% of teens age 12–17 are likely to create a blog, as well as 20% of 18–32 year-olds. They assure the readers that employers are eager to manipulate this ability, almost unique to the Millennial Generation, to their benefit.

It is possible that Millennials may find that their computermediated form of communication may not be as productive as traditional face-to-face interaction, leaving them disabled.

Millennials must make it a point, therefore, not only to practice modern forms of communication, but lend themselves to the nuances of personal interaction, as well.

Blessings and curses accompany each generation; the Millennial Generation has been blessed with technology beyond the dreams of previous generations and has been cursed due to the previously unexplored implications of this phenomenon, in addition to being substantially affected by particular parental rearing techniques. As millennials, we must hone the abilities that come with being raised in our generation, so we can be contributing members of the world we have been born into.

Lassiter is a 2017 graduate of Leadership Winston-Salem, was named 2016 Carolina League Executive of the Year and received the Under 40 Winston-Salem Leadership Award in 2016 and Top 40 Under 40 in the Triad in 2013. Earlier in his career, Lassiter served as assistant athletic director for marketing and special projects at Wake Forest University.

He received a BS degree in business administration and economics from Greensboro College in 1999. At Greensboro College, Lassiter served as senior class president 1998–1999 and played varsity basketball 1995–1999 (team captain 1997–1999).

Geoff and his wife Kiera and their three children, Porter, Wilson and Mary Elizabeth reside in Winston-Salem.

The

Forsyth County Broncos are located in Clemmons, NC, and share their home field with Clemmons Elementary School. We are a non-profit youth football program, ranging in age from 5 to 14 years old. Our Jr. Midget team just won the local/state championship and punched their ticket to Kissimmee, Florida, to play for the National Championship. We are currently ranked 5th in the NATION. Our family is made up of 24 twelve- and thirteen-year-old young men and 6 coaches. One of the most impressive things about our group is the fact that our overly qualified coaching staff does not have one kid playing on this team—they do it for the love of the game and to teach these boys how to become great young men. We are 6-0 in our conference play, scoring 205 points and giving up 0. We also played two out-of-conference games, a JV High School team from Raleigh whom we beat 34-6 and an undefeated Ellis Middle School team from Davie County whom we also defeated, 34-12. Needless to say, these boys have worked their tails off all year and are actually poised to bring a Division 1 National Championship home to Clemmons. All we need now is a little help to get there. It will cost between $15K and $20K to get the job done. A lot of our kids come from families that just can’t afford this expense, so we are looking to the community to help us reach our goal. How to Help Motivate Your Friends to Work Out

It’s

getting towards the end of the year and that means workout motivation can start becoming pretty low. Parties, activities, social gatherings can all take the place of working out during the holiday season. Let’s all get motivated and stay motivated together going into 2018!

We all have that friend who cancels on us last minute for a workout or who just refuses to even tease the idea of working out.

However, you can help them! Here are several tips and tricks on how to help motivate your friends to start working out and stay working out.

1. Meet them halfway. Especially if your friend just started working out, she may not be on the same level as you in terms of fitness. Suggest options for a workout at all levels and let her choose which workout she wants to do.

2. Do not add pressure. Instead of telling them why they should work out and making it all about their lives, offer more tidbits about your life and why you love working out.

3. Share your story with them. Share the reason why you do work out and how it has changed your life. Don’t be scared of vulnerability. Your friend could be intimidated and feel insecure about working out and you sharing your story could open their heart up.

4. Encourage and educate them. Be helpful and offer tips without overstepping your boundaries. Offer encouragement always! Give them your favorite health and fitness websites.

5. Take a walk or hike. It’s always a great option to take a walk and enjoy time together outdoors. You are getting good exercise and time to catch up.

6. Plan workouts together. Make a plan once for your first workout together and then try to make it a consistent thing.

Do not overwhelm your friend with 5 days a week of working out together; it could be just a once-a-week workout.

7. Hold each other accountable. Make a plan for when you will workout on your own and text each other in the morning to make sure you stuck to your workout. Having a workout buddy who holds you accountable is a good reminder to get your body moving.

Here is a beginner strength workout that is great for both beginners and advanced. Just add more weight if it’s too easy, or take weight off to make it easier.

• Warm up for 3 minutes with alternating jumping jacks, marching or jogging in place and reverse lunges.

• Leg Set: Do 15 reps of each exercise and 3 total sets before moving on.

“It’s the only professional Christmas light display presented locally in the Greensboro area,” said Eddie McLaurin, owner of McLaurin Farms. “As a special treat, children can have their photo taken with Santa, and there’ll be hot chocolate and apple cider for mom and dad.”

Traditional Holiday Buckeyes

How

about a brief history lesson on the state tree of Ohio? The Buckeye is the state tree of Ohio. It produces small nuts, with a dark outer shell and a lighter interior, which is visible from the top. This confectionary version resembling the beloved nut is made with a creamy peanut butter center and a milk chocolate outer shell.

A holiday tradition in my family, Buckeyes make the perfect holiday gift for neighbors, teachers and friends. Their peanut-buttercup taste appeals to a wide audience, and their easy assembly makes this no fuss for you, either.

INGREDIENTS: 2½ cups sifted confectioners’ sugar 1 cup smooth peanut butter 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 8 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon vegetable shortening

DIRECTIONS: Line a baking sheet with parchment. Beat the confectioners’ sugar, peanut butter, butter, vanilla and salt with an electric mixer in a medium bowl until well combined. Scoop out 2-teaspoonful mounds and roll into balls; arrange them on the prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, about 20 minutes.

Microwave the chocolate and shortening in a microwave-safe medium bowl in 30-second increments, stirring in-between, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth—about 2 minutes.

Stick a toothpick or skewer into the top center of a peanut butter ball. Dip the ball into the melted chocolate, leaving a circle of peanut butter visible on top.

Let the excess chocolate drip off, then return the buckeye to the baking sheet.

Repeat with the remaining peanut butter balls and chocolate.

Chill the buckeyes until firm, about 30 minutes. Smooth out the hole left by the toothpick with an offset spatula. Serve at room temperature or well chilled.

Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
