What

do you get when you cross a 60th birthday with a 40th birthday? What else but a 100th birthday celebration? Back in December we were talking with our sweet friend Kristin Marion about the fact that they both had milestone birthdays this year. Kristin turned 40 in May and Tim turns 60 in August. The idea was born to hold a joint party for them, and true to both of their wonderful spirits, it would involve giving back to others. Instead of gifts, they asked for folks to do an act of kindness to honor this momentous occasion. We attend church together at Sunrise UMC in Lewisville. Tim and I were youth leaders there for many years, and Kristin helped chaperone on a majority of mission trips with us. So, suffice it to say we have quite a history of giving back together. I truly believe we are happiest in life when we help others.

Where has summer gone? August is back-to-school time and appropriately, our August issue features AlphaBEST Education, a before- and after-school enrichment provider. A Conversation with Jody Peske

The

most complicated financial transaction you’ll ever have will be the sale of your house.

Thankfully for the Triad, we have a local real estate guru and all-around awesome person, Jody Peske, to give some guidance on how to sell your home. She agreed to sit down with Forsyth Family and share her expertise with our readers.

DH: What do you do?

JP: I work as both a buyer’s and seller’s agent through Keller Williams. I’ve been in the real estate industry since 2005, but beyond that, I moved seven times in a 14-year period! That much moving will give you a definite voice of experience!

DH: I’m sure it would! We’ve all heard the terms “Buyer’s Market” and “Seller’s Market.” Where are we right now?

JP: This is a definite seller’s market! In fact, it’s a great time to list your home if you’ve been considering a change. Inventory is low, and owners are getting the most value for their homes that we’ve seen in the last ten years!

DH: So I assume great pictures are a must to attract a good buyer?

JP: Yes, but it’s no longer enough. While sellers have the advantage, buyers are savvy and have specific wants. I tell my clients, “There’s only one first impression! Let’s make it the best one!”

DH: So how does a seller make a great first impression?

DH: “Curb appeal” has always been a number-one tip in my industry. I recommend removing any yard clutter, including toys, newspapers, yard tools, etc.

Pet bowls, dog houses, pet toys should be cleaned and organized. Park the car in the garage or on the street to leave the driveway clear. Obviously, sellers need to keep their yard in great shape with a good mowing and trimming. And a splash of color with potted plants can make a world of difference on a front porch!

DH: Great suggestions! I’m sure you have tips for the interior, too?

JP: Absolutely! The important thing for sellers to realize is that they need to have a change in mindset. Since they plan to sell the house, they can no longer think of it as “home.” This is hard to do, especially if someone has lived in the sample place for years. But, you have to look at a house that’s going to be sold through the eyes of a potential buyer.

Beds should always be made, and the dishes shouldn’t be left in the sink. Trashcans should be emptied. Closets should be organized, and the house should be de-cluttered. Preparing to list a house requires some time and work, but the good thing is, doing it before listing the house actually makes packing a lot easier!

I also recommend re-painting extreme colors to make the house more neutral. While it may seem counter-productive to paint rooms that you’re preparing to leave, neutral colors help a potential buyer see themselves in a home. It’s less of you and your family and giving the buyer a chance to see themselves in the space.

DH: What else should a seller think about?

JP: It really helps us out if a seller has kept great records. We need to know how old the furnace and A/C is…. If a seller replaced the roof within recent years, that’s important information. Has the hot water heater been updated? Are the appliances staying? Those kinds of details enable us to showcase amenities that are attractive to buyers.

DH: How does all of this help the selling process?

JP: Real estate transactions are so multi-faceted, the more the seller is willing to help on the front end generally helps things go better throughout the [whole] process. A seller is more likely to get more bang for their buck with a bit of preparation on the front end. They get a highly motivated and excited buyer who is willing to offer more. And as I said earlier, the house is organized and in better shape for packing and moving when closing comes around.

Sometimes Being Able to Play is the Best Medicine

A

child is never happier than when they are playing. Their eyes light up with each trip down the slide and giggles are heard as each swing gets a little higher than the one before it. For children diagnosed with pediatric cancer, times of happiness and just letting go and being a kid are few and far between. To help children and their families dealing with the diagnosis of pediatric cancer see hope in a terrible time, Roc Solid Foundation, based in Chesapeake, VA, builds playsets for children 1-8 years old and redecorates rooms of kids 8-18 years old. Roc Solid Foundation founder, Eric Newman, himself a survivor of liver cancer when he was 3, took his love of construction and his passion to reach out to children like him when he was young and combined them to begin building playsets and redoing rooms.

He started in 2009, and has over 400 “Play It Forward” projects completed to date.

The organization expanded from their home base of Virginia to North Carolina in 2017 and recently did their first playset build in WinstonSalem, NC, for Abby Keating, a 3-year-old, diagnosed on September 7th, 2017, with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Abby’s treatment began immediately at Brenner Children’s Hospital with chemotherapy, which depleted her immune system and put the family in isolation at the hospital.

The Keating family welcomed a new baby daughter, Caroline, just two days before Abby completed her treatments, so the Keating family of 4 now, all went home together!

“Abby was nominated for a Roc Solid playset by a friend who reached out to the organization. Roc Solid worked with the Child Life Specialist at Brenner and set up the build of the playset, which was sponsored by Richard Childress Racing. The morning of Abby’s playset build, they arranged for a limo to pick us up along with some of our friends and go out to breakfast, followed by a trip to Build-A-Bear, where all of the kids were able to make their own bear. At noon, we headed back home for the big reveal. Abby had no idea while we were gone that the playset that she had wanted was being built. We got out of the limo, walked the red carpet, carrying Abby with her eyes covered, to the backyard. Abby was shocked at first, but then the biggest smile came on her face! It was amazing! All she wanted to do was play. But Roc Solid did more than build a playset for Abby.

Knowing that the founder, Eric Newman and the local coordinator, Kara Bonvillian, are both cancer survivors, gave us as

parents hope for Abby’s future. Now, Abby, just turned three, and her sister, who is six months old, love to play together, and I can envision many, many years of us looking out our back window and seeing them play together along with their friends,” said Michelle Keating, Abby’s mom. Roc Solid Foundation also reaches out to families in another way, too.

“Many times when families get the diagnosis of cancer for their child, they immediately are checked in to the hospital, not able to return home. We provide Roc Solid Ready Bags to families, with items like toiletries, a journal, debit cards, coins for vending machines, a tablet...everything needed for an unexpected stay at the hospital. We feel these bags let a family know that they aren’t alone in this journey; we want to bring them hope. We’ve recently started building outside of Virginia, and have completed playsets in the Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, NC, areas, working with Levine Children’s Hospital and UNC Children’s Hospital. A playset is really a simple concept, and people might say, ‘Why would a playset be needed when a family is facing cancer with their child?’

With the playset, we are able to restore a bit of what is normal for a child, playing and having fun, during a time when nothing seems right to the child or their family. If we can help a child and a family set cancer aside and just focus on the enjoyment that comes from one day, then we’ve made the difference we want to make,” Ashley Martin, Director of Communication, Roc Solid Foundation, commented.

First Day Fears

The

anticipation of the first day of school at a new school can raise fear and worry for both our children and us as parents. The good news is that these transition fears most always go away as your child becomes familiar with her/his new school, teachers and classmates. And, this often happens sooner than we anticipate. While these transition moments, by definition, are temporary, there are things we can do as parents to support our children as the first day of school approaches.

The most important first step in supporting our children with these transitions is to be clear ourselves whose fear it is. Is this my child’s fear, or mine? Because much of our parenting mindset is focused on protecting our children, it can be easy to project our worries about new or unknown situations onto our children. This is especially true if we had a lot of first-day worries as children ourselves. If I had certain fears and worries, I am more likely to worry that my child will have those same fears and worries.

This, of course, isn’t always the case. Simply asking your child how he/she feels about their upcoming first day of school will help you determine what, if anything, you can do to help. ote that it is all in how we ask this question, being careful not to plant a seed of worry that may not exist. Asking, “Are you worried about the first day of school?” is a very different question than, “How are you feeling?” or, “Are you excited about the first day of school?”

If you know that your child is indeed feeling fearful or anxious, it is important to ask yourselves, “Do I need to fix this?” Again, as parents, our instinct is often to protect, intercede, act on behalf of our children, but often no action other than listening and validating their fears is needed. As a dad, I needed time to learn this, and it was my daughter who helped me most to understand it. Sometimes what is most needed is just knowing that someone else gets it, gets us, and

understands our worries, fears, sadness, etc. I have learned, through much trial and error, three steps to take before I act or attempt to fix a situation for my children.

1. Validate feelings. “I understand, sometimes new things can be scary. I feel that way too, sometimes.”

2. Listen fully without distractions.

3. Ask what is needed. “Is there anything I can do or that you need to feel better? Is there anything that would help ease your worry or fear, etc.?”

If and when it is determined that your child is indeed feeling anxious about the first day of school and she/he would like some help, there are many creative ways to make the looming unknown a little more familiar and less scary. Here are just a few suggestions.

• Maintain some consistent routines throughout the summer, which always helps children transition from a summer to a school mindset. Even if your summer routines are a bit more relaxed than school-year routines, having regular bedtime and meal times, maintaining bedtime and morning routines,

participating in regular family chores/responsibilities helps children fall back into the more rigorous routines of the school year.

in getting supplies may give your child a sense of empowerment in a situation where they feel they have little control.

• Have your child’s school connect you with a few families that will be in your child’s new class. This will allow you and your child a chance to meet new classmates and families and perhaps begin some new friendships.

• If your school offers an open house for children, by all means, go. These can be wonderful opportunities for your child to meet their teacher, see their class, and even walk around their new school.

• As the school year approaches, your child can write (or dictate to you if they are not yet writing) a letter to their new teacher about her/himself. This can be illustrated for younger children or include a special photo and be hand-delivered on the first day of school. Sharing details about our lives and what is important to us, even in a letter, can help us feel more connected to someone. And, what child doesn’t like to talk about their family, their pets and their favorite things?

• For younger children, and if okay with the school, visit or have a picnic at the school playground. Seeing and associating a fun activity will help your child orient to this new setting and plant some positive impressions about their new school.

• Have your child be a part of getting their school supplies ready. Participating and having some choice

• Create a first-day tradition or several. Anything from a special breakfast, an early-morning bike ride to an after-school treat could give your child something familiar and special to balance out their day of newness.

• Lastly, if transitions are significantly difficult, and for some children they are, advocate for your child by contacting the school and letting his/her teacher know what your child’s worries are, and how the school can support them. All good teachers will want to be ready to support each of their children on the first day. You can help them by partnering with them early.

Whether first day fears are ours or our children’s, understanding whose fear it is, validating fears, and taking simple actions, if needed, to empower our children and make the unknown of a new school a little more familiar can help. And remember, these moments of transition, while challenging at times, are temporary.

Protect your final wishes Planning can preserve your estate, spare tough decisions during grief Each of Laura’s siblings thought they knew their mother’s final wishes. However, when she became ill they couldn’t agree on her care. When she passed away, they struggled to divide what she left behind.

Like her mother, Laura doesn’t consider herself wealthy. Creating an estate plan seemed unnecessary. After being at odds with her siblings and paying a large portion of her inheritance in taxes, however, Laura’s reconsidering making some plans to spare her own children added grief.

Many people feel estate planning is for the wealthy, but having an estate plan may actually be more critical for families with more modest means. They can least afford to lose family assets to probate and legal fees or taxes.

Settling into a New Neighborhood:

CONSIDER SAFETY FIRST

papers officially declaring your ownership of a long-awaited home, the next step may be to begin the arduous task of unpacking heavy boxes.

Granted, organizing the kitchen items, toiletries and essential linens and clothing are important; but these efforts can wait; a more important task is needs tackling. It involves leaving the house.

Become Visible Neighbors in various directions are vying to meet the new neighbor. For months, there has been a curiosity about who will become a vital part of the neighborhood; therefore, don’t spend hours sitting on the back porch, especially if your new home has a tall fence; instead, sit in a chair out front and start introducing yourself when you see a neighbor leaving the house or walking the dog. Remember, these people are an extra set of eyes when you are at work, on vacation, or potentially a reliable source in an emergency situation.

Getting to know your neighbors, and building a relationship, provides a layer of community as you settle into your new home and neighborhood.

The buddy system is ideal to ensure children are not alone and meandering without purpose or destination. Think of a clever way to spend time with parents before your child spends time at a neighbor’s house, such as taking a walk or meeting at the park.

Neighborhood Watch

Young children will need help in finding other children within the neighborhood.

Early evenings are a perfect time to walk the dog or go for a bike ride together.

Perhaps other children will be outdoors; evidence of their ages may be in the form of a swing set, bike, or toys.

It is important to find out how neighbors are maintaining safety, especially if a neighborhood watch sign is not present.

It is reported that town watch programs have reduced crime by 26% compared to other locations that were not involved.

Why not raise the bar? Neighbors can promise to be present outdoors by taking walks, working in the yard, sitting on the front porch, and allowing children to play, especially in groups. Other factors are maintaining the yard and its appearance and keeping the porch light on in the evenings. Installing motion sensor lights in the front and back yard can eliminate a potential intruder, hiding in relative safety without detention.

Neighborhood parks are an opportune location to meet other parents and children. Under the premise of playing in a safe location, children can learn about their school and potential classmates that

Home Homeowners can maintain a safe environment by diligently considering the home as a fortress. Actions and behaviors can alert or deter a potential intruder. It can be as simple as keeping the curtains closed, especially at night, or breaking down and concealing packaging of pricey possessions, such as a new flat screen television or computer. Other suggestions are: • Motion-censored lights and accent lights around a distant flower garden can aid in visualization.

• Being aware of garage door opener key fobs, especially if left in an unlocked car. Make sure keys, and other items are not visible.

• Maintaining your privacy on social media. Revealing that your family is leaving for vacation, or a spouse is going to be gone for days can be an ideal opportunity for a break-in.

Sharing news and pictures can wait until everyone has returned home.

• Large shrubs can be the perfect place to hide. An alternative is to plant miniature shrubs or a variety of bushy flowers such as delphiniums, hollyhocks, iris and a variety of lavender.

Improving neighborhood safety is a team effort. The discussion may be on the minds of your neighbors; yet, it can begin with you.

knows that teachers have difficult jobs. They have to give individual attention to 20–30 kids at a time, all of whom have different personalities and skill sets. They have mountains of paperwork to complete and an ocean of red tape to navigate. While we all love to show our appreciation to teachers during the holidays and again during Teacher Appreciation Week in May, the back-to-school season is an excellent time to show your support with Back-to-School Starter Kits (or Survival Kits, as the case may be).

Sure, you can keep it simple with basic school supplies. But you can also get creative with some fun themed baskets. Think of Spas and Relaxation; Movie Night; Caffeination Station! The possibilities are endless. You can also include a list of items and define the purpose of each. Ideas include: • Animal crackers for those days when the classroom feels like a zoo.

• Erasers to remind you that everyone makes mistakes.

• A bag of marbles, just in case your favorite teacher is on the verge of losing theirs!

• Paperclips to keep everything held together.

• Tissues to wipe away tears—whether tears because it was just “one of those days,” or tears of joy that a difficult student finally “got it.”

• Lotion for when things get a little rough.

• “Snickers” bar to remind him/her to take a break.

• Rubber bands to remind them to stay flexible.

• Packs or cans of soup for those days when things are too hot to handle.

• Hand sanitizer because lots of kids means lots of germs.

• A bag of change as a reminder that they are changing lives (and to help supplement lunch money!)

• Tea bags to remind your favorite teacher to relax.

• An apple because they’re a teacher and it’s virtually synonymous with the profession.

• Coffee because…well, it’s coffee.

month, we would like to share some photos from Forsyth Family Magazines’ June Kids’ Morning Out (KMO). We missed posting due to the event being held late in the month.

Every month, Forsyth Family hosts a Kids’ Morning Out event. Generally, they are free events held throughout the city at various kid-friendly locations. Rarely, there may be a small admission cost or required registration. The events usually are held from 10am-noon, and the dates vary month to month. Each adult receives tickets for a chance at winning prizes from the amazing prize board!

The events are a great way to introduce a specific activity or experience to families new to the area, or ones that would like to become reacquainted or are curious about a location.

These pictures are from the June KMO that was held at Hanes Park. Folks from the Winston-Salem Open and Tennis4Life provided informative instructions and drills on the game of tennis.

You may keep up with the monthly KMOs throughout our magazines or on Facebook. Next month’s (August’s) KMO will be held on August 18th @ BB&T Field. We’re partnering with Wake Forest University to introduce the 2018 football team at their annual FanFest. Gates open at 4:30 pm. See our ad on page 3 for more details. For summer clothes, late August and early September offer deep discounts. Hold off on buying winter clothes. There may be more sales. Warm temps often last into November in North Carolina. Buy jeans in October when the back-to-school rush has ended and retailers cut prices on leftover inventory.

Shop Around Knocking out school shopping at one store may be convenient, but you may pay full price for many items. Buy when and where the price is right. Look for bargains at thrift stores. Many stores run back-to-school sales just like major retailers. For school supplies, the closer to the first day of school, the more picked over the inventory will be.

Four Tips for Back-To-School As the dog days of summer near an end, a reminder: back to school season is starting.

The southern United States spends the most and the earliest for school – with 70% of shoppers in the region starting before August and an average spend of $554 per child, on according to consultancy firm Deloitte. Savvy shoppers are looking for big savings.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools first day is Monday, Aug. 27. So, there’s still time to plan your shopping strategy.

If you don’t plan to wait for clearance sales, hit up dollar stores for bargains on supplies like notebooks and pencils. Don’t count on back-to-school items staying in stock long.

If you have a college student, searching bargain stores, and classified ad and social media sites, can take the edge off sticker shock. Save money dorm shopping at classified sites for used items like a fridge, microwave, rugs, and light cooking equipment. Ask friends and family about items they do not use, or trade for needed items with neighborhood parents – it offers the added benefit of decluttering homes.

Don’t Forget About Coupons Watch for back-to-school fliers and ads this month. The Sunday paper is still a great place to find coupons. Check your mailbox for weekly coupons and store websites for printable coupons. Or, download coupons onto your smartphone, use text-to-get coupon promotions, or seek out back-to-school sections on retail coupon websites.

Use a School Supplies List, Take Inventory You need to develop a plan. Know what you need so you can keep costs manageable. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools provides supply lists for all grade levels at www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us. Follow it closely. It shows exactly what you need.

You may have what you need lying around your house. Take inventory of closets, desk drawers, and basement bins that hold hidden treasures – from clothes to school supplies.

Put supplies in a central location – like a plastic bin or dining room table. Make a list of what you have. Check it against your needs list. As you sort other needed items like clothing, make sure to determine how many outfits you really need to buy.

Keep your lists with you as you shop. Don’t re-buy what you already own.

Watch Your Timing Remember, when your kids get to school this year, they may quickly change their minds about what they like – when they see what everyone else is wearing.

The big rush to buy school supplies occurs in August. Major retailers will compete all summer to sell you supplies. For some items, you can avoid this peak time and buy later when items go on sale. Waiting may limit your selection, but the goal is to avoid paying full price for items like clothes, pens and binders.

Some stores offer coupons in store, you just have to ask – or find them on shelves. Many retailers have school supply coupons in the weekly ads kept at the front of the store. Call ahead to stores to see if they offer coupon or price matching, especially for expensive items like electronics. And, check about upcoming sales – it never hurts to ask.

Also, search updates from your favorite retailers on Twitter and Facebook. Many send loyal followers coupon links and advance notice of sales.

“Back to School” season is being blared in bold-print banners, commercials and advertisements; in addition, by children, who are openly curious about the uncertainty of a new year. While parents are reassuring children in calm voices and answering questions, you, too, will wonder, “Is she going to have a great year?” One of the first places to discover answers is at the school Open House.

The First Meeting Your child’s teacher may be standing outside the classroom, welcoming parents to come in and be seated. It may be the first time you have spoken to this teacher or entered her room. If arriving late, you may discover the crowd of parents, adult siblings, and grandparents chattering, establishing introductions and reacquainting themselves with old friends. It’s a night not only to learn about the year’s expectations, but also to meet the other parents, whose child may become your daughter’s or son’s closest friend.

TIP: Always introduce yourself in connection with your child’s name.

Key Information At your child’s desk, there may be a stapled packet or folder including a welcome letter and vital information such as schedules, grading and homework policies, and a parent handbook. Teachers, despite the challenging nature of the evening, will want to highlight key information about the year and to give you a chance to openly ask questions. This is not the time to challenge curriculum standards or busing schedules. Limited time is available.

Please remember, teachers are as anxious about the year as you. She’ll want to make this year a rewarding experience for everyone. Although she may appear nervous or distracted, it truly is a big night for all to make a good first impression.

Learning Expectations Open House is an overwhelming event for teachers. Not only is the teacher’s classroom on display, but she is trying to personally associate names with faces. Some teachers enjoy addressing all the parents and guardians at once. In this format, parents will learn key information, such as specific procedures and rules of the classroom, the homework and grading policy, important aspects of the curriculum, and information which pertains to the year’s or state standards. Take a pad of paper and pen with you. It will be a lot to take in, and a few jotted notes will help verify your memory in the days that follow.

TIP: While you are at your child’s desk, leave a note with a few words and an encouraging message, such as, “This is going to be a fantastic year!”

Establishing a Good Relationship The student, teacher, and parent relationship is a triangle of support to ensure your child succeeds. It begins with the parent(s) promising to keep the teacher well informed.

As you begin the year, consider sending positive notes that mention your child’s comments on favorite classes and projects.

She’ll appreciate the feedback and your willingness to share. This will help break the ice when other issues need to be addressed.

TIP: Before you leave the classroom, consider leaving a card on the teacher’s desk, simply stating it was nice to meet her, and with a quick word about your availability to assist her and the class, whether it is volunteering your time at school or from home.

Do Not Linger When the event is over, a number of parents tend to linger seeking a private conversation alone with the teacher. Just remember, while her day began early in the morning, attending meetings and spending every spare second preparing the classroom for Open House, she is also giving her time to meet the parents and caregivers. It is not the time to give you the privacy nor the attention to detail you require at such a late hour; instead, send an e-mail or arrange a scheduled conference.

With your guidance and support, parents, you can help your child have a great year!

Exploring the World through

it be wonderful to drop your daily routine and go on a yearlong excursion around the world? In those experiences when we walk streets, see landmarks, and begin to connect with the topography, a worldly awareness begins to form. Learning about geography begins with the mere interest in a far-away destination, such as the Great Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, or the Empire State Building. It is one spark to light the way forward. In the comfort of the living room, families can begin with one question, “Where should we explore first?”

Pictures and Reading

Historical and realistic fiction are equally as important as the information found in non-fiction books. Fictitious stories are most effective in teaching a specific time in history, while the reader interjects specific cultural customs, practices of etiquette, and words or expressions in a foreign language. A librarian from your local public library can assist by recommending books, for instance, about the Great Pyramids. Lessons can expand to other locations such as Cairo, the capital of Egypt, and Alexandria and the Nile River through a study of Cleopatra.

ACTIVITY: Create a list of facts about each country or state, and its individual cities; perhaps in the form of a book.

(Writing facts down, especially in color, will encourage remembering. Hand-drawn pictures will also be vital in this activity.)

Maps and Globes

A visual aid helps us to learn for understanding; therefore, designing a papier mâché globe can be one personalized tool to offer perspective. (This project takes patience, time, and can be messy; however, a child will learn about scale, landmark features, and location and placement of the continents with it. Thus the result is well worth the effort.)

PROCEDURE: To make the papier mâché, first, run a thin film of Vaseline over a balloon. This separates the balloon from the newspaper and prevents sticking. Choose any recipe for the papier mâché. Four layers of newspaper will create a sturdy sphere; then, paint with white acrylic gesso. Trace paper cutouts onto the globe to help with size and shape of the continents. Lastly, paint.

ACTIVITY: A map of the world on a wall in your child’s playroom or bedroom can include pictures of landmarks linked with string. (This replica of the world on poster

board can also perhaps aid children in seeing a complete representation of our world.)

ACTIVITY: Take one aspect of the world, Egypt, for example, and create a map, including naming its bordering countries, cities and capital, landmarks, rivers, and oceans. Teaching geography from an outward-in perspective helps children identify and remember locations much easier.

ACTIVITY: A salt-dough map can assist in defining mountain ranges and various levels of elevation, rivers and lakes. After it has been painted, young children will enjoy an activity which requires fine details and a three-dimensional product.

Have Compass Will Travel

In helping children learn about ordinal directions, a compass is one tool required. For your state, children can create their own compass using needles, corks, cups of water, and magnets.

ACTIVITY: In lieu of using a GPS, create a map using ordinal directions, road names and landmarks to arrive to a destination such as a grocery store or school. With the assistance of a compass, test the directions.

Games and Puzzles

From hand-drawn pictures of landmarks or names of capitals or rivers, a game can be easily created using a map or bingo card. There are many wonderful board games available to help children learn about the United States and the specific places in the world. Some of these are: • “Scrambled States”; • “Ticket to Ride Europe” (and India, the USA, the Nordic and Asian countries, and the United Kingdom edition), age, 8+; • “10 Days in Africa” (editions available for 10 Days in the USA, Asia, and Europe.) 8+; • “Name That Country,” by Geo Safari, 6+.

The puzzle of geography is not just about facts and titles.

Great strides are made when a curious child wonders how different civilizations or people influence each other, whether positively or negatively. The door to history and current events opens. The question is, how wide? Why not begin today by asking one simple question, “What is your favorite landmark?”

a young age, most people learn about the five senses: smell, taste, touch, hearing, and sight. While these feelings allow children to become aware of their surroundings and the world around them, they can also be incorporated into a child’s play to help his or her growth and development.

Sensory play, as it is commonly known, has many benefits and can be included in multiple activities for all ages.

WHAT IS SENSORY PLAY? According to educationalplaycare.com, sensory play is defined as “an activity that stimulates a young child’s senses, facilitates exploration, and encourages them to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate, and explore.” To summarize, sensory play is basically helping a child explore while using their five senses to help with their brain development. Along with smell, taste, touch, hearing, and sight, activities try to involve body awareness and balance. These two extra “senses” allow a child’s brain to respond faster to muscles and pressure points in various parts of the body, helping the child learn where their body is in relation to space and gravity. Together, the seven elements assist in building stronger connections with the brain

when it comes to processing and responding to sensory information.

For example, sensory play helps children create a quicker response time to move away from something hot, instead of being drawn in by the object’s warmth. Another example regards picky eaters, who might steer away from foods with wet textures, such as spaghetti. To overcome this, sensory play activities help the child touch, smell, and play to get familiar with this texture.

It gives children the opportunity to develop a broader picture of the world. By exploring different objects that involve all their senses, kids will be able to describe their surroundings in more descriptive ways. Instead of saying a tree is green with leaves, they could explain the tree is a pine with rough bark. Also, they can build their vocabulary by learning new words and adjectives.

This developmental concept lets children adapt to the elements in their environment by giving them exposure to multiple senses and atmospheres.

It guides them in constructing safe and positive decisions and making sense of their world, while comforting themselves no matter what environment they are in.

In addition to motor skills and language development, the exercises reinforce cognitive growth, problem-solving skills, and social interaction. Lastly, memory recognition is developed and enhanced. We all know that when we are adults, a particular smell or taste can bring us back to a favorite childhood memory.

BENEFITS: There are numerous benefits to using sensory play.

It helps with both a child’s fine and gross motor skills. Various activities in sensory play utilize small and large muscles to complete things, such as running, pouring, and pinching.

As mentioned above, sensory play heightens a child’s brain connections. The activities build nerve connections between the various pathways in the brain, which gives a person the ability to complete more complex learning tasks.

ACTIVITY EXAMPLES: There is no “rule book” for what type of activities classify as sensory play. However, the needed “requirements” for this type of play are that at least one of the five senses is incorporated and allows the child to explore, investigate, and examine their surroundings. These surroundings could be the objects they are playing with, the noises around them, etc. A few examples of sensory play activities are sensory tubs, sound walls, and cooking.

Sensory tubs are quick and simple ways for children to experience various textures. All you do is take a closed box or tub (with a hole for the child to reach their hand in) and fill with dry pasta, cornmeal, play dough, etc. These items can be in one tub or separate tubs. Then, have your child feel, touch, and get to know the materials.

Sound walls should include objects with different sounds at various volume levels.

In fact, you don’t even need to put the items on a wall, but a child needs to be able to hear and see what objects are making what sounds.

Lastly, cooking is a great sensory play exercise! With this activity, it is important to factor a child’s age into what they are doing, but cooking gives them the opportunity to use all of their senses.

These are just three of the many activities for sensory play. But whether we realize it or not, children experience sensory play almost every day through their fun adventures!

Moriah’s future is looking bright.

But it almost didn’t happen.

Moriah was fortunate. Because of Family Services’ partnership in the Pediatric Holistic Health Initiative at the Wake Forest Downtown Health Plaza, Moriah’s mom heard about the child development programs and services at Family Services and enrolled her daughter in Head Start, an evidence-based program that nurtures every aspect of a child’s growth, including the child’s family.

It’s a scientific fact. Children who have access to high quality, early childhood development programs and services will be better prepared – both intellectually and emotionally – to become healthier, happier and more socially responsible adults.

Family Services can’t do this alone. It takes lots of dedicated help. Head Start and Early Head Start teachers, family advocates, therapists, nutritionists, and staff collaborate with local physicians, agencies, and community leaders to provide the support and resources that are helping children and parents continue the positive development at home that will change each child’s future.

Now, Moriah is exploring her world within a nurturing learning environment and developing the social and emotional skills – in the first five years of her life – that will carry through to her first day of school and into adulthood.

What to Know Before College:

GOING to college is stressful—for parents and students. The following are the lessons my parents

and I share with you that we have learned through fall semester, 2017– June 2018 at UNC-Chapel Hill and at home.

1. YOUR DAYS OF PARENTING ARE NOT OVER

1. YOU DON’T NEED IT ALL

There is a transition when your child enters college. Your parenting just has to shift with that transition. As independent as college students are, they still need you—to help them set financial budgets, to tell them about health insurance and car insurance, to call and catch up every now and then.

When I packed for fall semester my freshman year of college, I thought I needed it all: a large meal plan, my entire wardrobe, a notebook for each class. You name it. I had it. I found that I didn’t use my entire meal plan, I didn’t wear half of the clothes I brought, and pretty much all of my classes preferred we use laptops to submit assignments and take notes. Less is more. You don’t need it all.

There is also a transition when your child comes home from college. Your child has been living on his/her own for almost a year. He/ she has learned to become more mature and independent. You must allow some of that independence and maturity to reveal itself now.

2. THEY WILL BE FINE College is an exciting time! While it can be easy to worry about children being truly independent and responsible for themselves for the first time, they are in no danger. They are paving their own path and becoming their own people—one mistake at a time.

2. YOUR FRIEND GROUP WILL CHANGE Who you hang out with will change simply because you will change. College is a time for you to mature and grow as an individual. You may find that you’ve grown out of the people you grew up with.

Who you hang out with is also easy to change because it’s easier to find new friends in college. There is what feels a million people at your school. If you don’t like your current friend group because they’re too mean or they aren’t interested in what you’re interested in, there are new people everywhere you turn that you can make friends with.

3. COLLEGE IS FUN While, yes, the ultimate goal of college is to study, you should allow yourself time to enjoy the college experience. There’s so much more to learn about than what comes from your books. Be social and don’t be afraid to give up an hour of study time to enjoy the campus life.

A Year of Change and Growth

all the excitement of seeing old friends and meeting new ones, there are moments when the beginning weeks of school may feel overwhelming.

Leaving behind the low-key days of late risings and few obligations, we need time to adapt to the giant learning curve of new expectations and schedule, opportunities and big decisions.

One solution is to think through important questions to ensure the year maintains the credo: “It’s going to be a fantastic year!”

REFLECTION

In reflecting upon the prior year’s challenges, students should take the time to implement new and positive changes by thinking through and answering the following questions: • Do I give myself enough time to study?

• What strategies can I use to help me with my least and most difficult subjects?

• What grades would I like to receive at the end of the first quarter?

• What is the solution to feeling exhausted in the morning?

• How can I have more time with my family, friends, and myself?

• How can I eliminate all the stress and worry I felt last year?

• What are my distractions?

Once questions are contemplated and answered, students can begin making promises.

To ensure students remember their new pact, it is vital to put those ideas in writing.

Remember, ideas can be revised. Do not be hard on yourself if the first few ideas do not work. In fact, remember also, the old ways did not work either; so, do not give up!

Please, continue to try!

A BALANCED SCHEDULE: WHEN TO SAY NO!

Representatives in the form of teachers and students will be encouraging new members to join a particular club, organization, or a sport. Some groups may be of interest to your friends and persuade you to sign up, too. Prior to responding with a swift, “Yes!” think about how much time you have for not just yourself, and family and friends, but also your school responsibilities and evening classes or lessons. What does a balanced schedule look like to you? With advanced thought into the time you want to extend towards extracurricular activities, consider what types of activities you want to join. It could be a theater group or band. Think about how much additional time you want to commit; therefore, ask questions well before you agree! It will be hard to say, “No,” afterward!

THE FRIENDSHIP DILEMMA

Promises can also lead to the types of relationships students want to have. If friends are dramatic, argumentative, bossy, or challenging, it may be time to ask, “Why are we friends?” This year the focus can be on positive relationships. How many friends can be defined as supportive, kind, fun, and respectful with information? Difficult relationships are exhausting. If students are honest with themselves, it is okay to select who belongs in the inner circle.

INCLUDE TIME FOR FUN AND SELF!

School is more than just listening, responding, and maintaining responsibilities. It is also a year to grow. With reflection, and making sound decisions, students also need time to be alone, read, exercise, and think. Yes, students will make big mistakes.

Disappointment and failures occur on occasion; yet, these are the very opportunities that will help students better control their own lives and fate. The task of balancing a schedule is not a natural act; but I implore you, dear student, to show the same enthusiasm for your educational efforts, friendships, and moments of fun!

It can be a great year. The perfect year of change and growth is attainable! Keep reflecting and tweaking!

Bullying:

Is My Child a Victim or a Bully?

BULLYING is a mainstream problem in today’s schools and can be defined as “using aggression and influence to intimidate and control others.” Children are exposed to negative comments, criticism, and discrimination towards themselves or others through television, social media, and the news. They observe how people treat others and think it is okay to do the same with their friends, siblings, classmates, and teammates. Bullying can be physical, verbal, relational, and reactive. As access to the Internet has grown, cyberbullying has become an increasing problem, as well. However, all types of bullying can be stopped when adults act quickly and consistently when a child displays bullying behavior, by showing them those behaviors are unacceptable.

Unfortunately, many people are bullied growing up. The unique differences that make them special might be seen as “weird” to a classmate. In return, the classmate criticizes them for the color of their skin, for wearing glasses, etc. It hurts a person’s feelings and breaks down their selfconfidence when they are being bullied. Also, the victims can create negative emotions and thoughts about themselves, which can lead to depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts.

SIGNS OF BULLYING: There are several signs or symptoms to look for if a parent suspects their child is being bullied. First, be aware of any missing belongings, new and unexplained injuries, and changes in the number of friends for a child. Other physical symptoms are headaches, stomach aches, changes in appetite, dizziness, and aches and pains. Psychological signs to look for include irritability, sadness, trouble sleeping, and a feeling of being isolated.

Lastly, a child might try to avoid a certain location, such as school or the soccer field. A decline in grades or becoming self-destructive are signs of bullying, as well. If you notice anything different in your child, it never hurts to speak up and ask them if everything is all right.

Children who are being the bully will also show a change in behavior. In her book, When Your Child is Being Bullied: Real Solutions, author Marie Newman explains some signs that will help you recognize if your child could be a bully. Some are: trouble sleeping; behavioral issues, such as hot-headedness; quick- developing frustration; a lack of empathy for others; trouble at school, an obsession with popularity, and aggressive

tendencies. Again, it never hurts to have a conversation with your child if something is out of the ordinary. To stay in-tune with what is happening in their life, try having daily discussions on what is going on in school and with their friends.

HOW TO HELP: One of the main ways to help stop bullying is by showing children that it is never right to be mean and disrespectful to others. A few rules of thumb to teach kids: stop and think if your words and/or actions could be hurtful; learn to manage your emotions and frustration; and that differences among people are what make the world a special place. An important lesson everyone should know is that no one is better or worse than anyone else.

If you are being bullied, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Talk to an adult you trust, whether it is a parent, teacher, coach, or guidance counselor.

Most adults don’t see what actually happens when someone is bullied. By having a discussion, a child can share the details of what the bully said and did. Other advantages to this step are the creation of a plan between the child and adult to stop the bullying, and giving the child an avenue to release their feelings and thoughts in a safe environment.

Teach your child to stand up to the bully themselves—if they feel safe and comfortable in doing so. However, they should be aware that they should never return the bullying actions and never fight back. When in doubt, they should walk away and stay away, until an adult can step into the situation.

For those who suspect their child has been a bully, ask them to think about how they would feel if someone ridiculed them and acted harshly towards them. Teach them to learn from their past actions and show them how to improve going forward. Then, assist your child in being kind and standing up for others, which could include apologizing to the victim. Whether someone is the victim or the bully, it takes little effort to invite someone to hang out on the playground, sit with you at lunch, or talk to them during school. Bullying is becoming more and more frequent, but can be stopped. Keep in mind the Golden Rule (treat others as you would want to be treated), and the world will be a better place.

How to Help an Addicted Friend or

Relative

If

you know someone struggling with an addiction, you may wonder how to help. Do you confront them, have an intervention involving others, or just help them one-on-one? The further they fall into the addiction, the more frustrated you become, not knowing what to do or how to discuss their addiction.

The decision to try and get help for someone you care about who has an addiction is never easy. Fortunately, with your support, they have a greater chance of overcoming their addiction.

Although each situation is different, with many variables, there are some general guidelines that will help you approach your task.

From the moment you choose to try and help, expect difficulties. They may not admit they have a problem, or not see their addiction as a problem. They may fear losing their job if they get help, possibly losing their status in the community, or feel embarrassed for all the pain they have caused. There’s no one way of overcoming addiction that works for everyone; it requires will power and determination to make a change and follow a new path, but there are steps you can take to make the outcome a positive one.

Building Trust If possible, establish a trust with the addict, one which goes both ways.

Although it is easy to do, don’t slip into nagging, criticizing, lecturing, or possibly engaging in addictive behaviors yourself, making you look like a hypocrite. For

example, if your loved one has a problem with alcohol, don’t meet for a drink to talk about their problem. Addicts often turn the tables on those trying to help them, and this situation can easily turn into “Before you help me with my drinking, you might want to get help yourself.” To an addict, help can often feel like you are trying to control them, leading to their going deeper into the addiction.

Don’t Lose Yourself in the Process When you are in a relationship with an addict, whether they are a friend or a relative, it is stressful. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be of any help to the person you are trying to help.

There are support groups to help you along the way, like Parents of Addicted Loved Ones. PAL meets at Clemmons United Methodist Church in Clemmons, NC. Deborah Capps, a Clemmons UMC member and facilitator for the PAL group, says, “We never tell anyone dealing with an addict what they should do, but we do offer suggestions. Everyone experiences this journey at their own pace and is supported by the group, regardless.”

Honest Communication It would be really easy just to lay your thoughts out on the table with your loved one and tell them that their addiction is a problem and that they need to change, but the decision to change is theirs, not yours. For the addict to get help and remain clean, they have to make the commitment. Change is much more likely to come about if your discussions are

honest, but in a tone that isn’t threatening and demeaning to the addict.

Getting Treatment Depending on the addiction, the treatment process will vary. If this part of their recovery can be helped with you being involved, you have to look at things honestly. Share your feelings about how the addiction has affected you and your relationship with the addict, don’t blame or criticize the addict during counseling and try to listen with an open mind. Many times addicts will try and place the blame on the person who suggested they get treatment, so don’t take it personally.

If it’s decided that treatment is to be done alone with a therapist or counselor, respect their privacy. Do not share their journey with others; that’s their decision to make, not yours. Do not initiate a conversation about how their treatment is going, again that is the addict’s decision to share or not to share. Do not push them to talk. There are many different approaches to the challenge of helping addicts, but keep in mind that change does not happen overnight. Becoming an addict didn’t happen overnight, so neither will change.

Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, a journey, not a destination. Be there to support your loved one, through the ups and downs, realizing there will be more downs than ups, but that the goal is a healthier person, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

collect, contribute, create: National Crayon Collection Month

BY MEGAN TAYLOR There is nothing like opening a new box of crayons and taking in that classic Crayola smell. Whether it was at home, in school, or at a restaurant, many people have memories of coloring and drawing with crayons while growing up. However, for some children, this isn’t a reality. August is known as

ational

Crayon Collection Month, with a mission to create that reality and make crayons accessible to all children.

The month is spearheaded and was created by the nonprofit, “Crayon Collection,” and can be summarized in three words “collect, contribute, and create.” According to crayoncollection.org, there are two parts to National Crayon Collection Month’s purpose: raising awareness of the number of crayons thrown away each year, and in return, having those crayons donated to Title1 elementary schools. The main focus is on unused restaurant crayons that end up in landfills and harm the environment. Over 150 million restaurant crayons are discarded each year, and because crayons don’t decompose, they lie unused. The organization’s goal is for those crayons to be given to schools and children in poverty. This will also help teachers who spend their own money providing art supplies for their classrooms.

There are many ways you and your family can participate in National Crayon Collection

Month. Before starting your collection drive, visit Crayon Collection’s website for multiple helpful resources, including flyers, signs, and a printable bookmark, featuring characters from the book, The Day the Crayons Quit. Then, begin with collecting crayons from local kid-friendly restaurants and from family members and friends. Ask managers at various restaurants if they will gather unused or like-new crayons that have been given to diners and left behind. You and the manager can determine whether this activity will be done over a course of time, such as a month, or if it will be a one-time only collection.

The campaign doesn’t have to be solely focused on gathering unused crayons from restaurants. Look through your art supplies at home. Many people have boxes of crayons they no longer need or that were a part of last year’s school supplies.

Another idea is hosting a collection drive in your community. The drive could be in your neighborhood, library, or community center. Once you have collected all the crayons, the nonprofit suggests putting them in boxes or bags before delivering them. Another step families can complete while getting kids involved in the activity is sorting the various colors of crayons. After sorting, you can package the individual colors into bags or create an assortment of colors and place them into one bag.

Finally, donate the crayons to a Title 1 elementary school or schools in your area.

If you are unsure which schools are Title 1, Crayon Collection has a finder on their website for you to utilize. Also, you can contact your local school district for information. Then, get in touch with a school and see how they would like to go about receiving your collection. It might be a simple drop-off, or at a larger event.

However, it is important to remember that the crayons need to be donated before the first day of school for the new school year. That way, the teachers and students can use them from day one.

Other places to consider donating your crayons to are daycares, Headstart centers, churches, and YMCAs. Think about businesses and nonprofits in your community that work with children, mainly those in poverty, and what supplies they might be lacking, due to limited finances or lack of funds. When choosing the place to donate to, think about children who might not have access to getting crayons and need them the most.

Don’t forget to share the news and inform others about your community service project. Share pictures on social media and use the hashtags, #GotCrayons and #MillionCrayonCollection.

National Crayon Collection Month only happens once a year; however, you can hold a crayon collection as many times as you would like throughout the year. Get your family, friends, neighborhood, and school involved. You never know whom you’ll inspire. Together, we can give back to children in need and save crayons from the landfill.

Wake Forest Football Builds on Success Summertime

is winding down, so that can mean only one thing: football season is just around the corner! What better way to get over summer than by preparing for the fun and excitement of the fall season with Wake Forest football, and celebrating at the Lowe’s Foods Deacon Tailgate Town on Piccolo Lane on game day, cheering on our Wake Forest Demon Deacons this season.

The family-friendly pre-game event begins three hours prior to kickoff and admission is free. The following Thursday night, September 13th, at 7:30 pm, is the ACC home opener against the Boston College Eagles. Last season the Deacons’ offense went 4 for 4 in red zone attempts, and the defense forced four turnovers in their 34-10 victory on the road at BC Alumni Stadium. ext, on Saturday, September 22nd, the Deacons host the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. In their last meeting, the Deacs suffered a heart-breaking loss 48-37 on the road after scoring 27 second-half points in a comeback that fell short.

Then on September 2 th (Family Weekend , the Owls of Rice University from Conference USA, under new head coach Mike Bloomgren, pay a visit. Prior to joining Rice, Bloomgren was Director of Offense and Associate Head Coach for the Stanford Cardinal, so this should be an offensive battle on both ends of the field. The Deacons conclude their five-game home stand on October 6th with the Clemson Tigers. Head Coach Dabo Swinney’s team is the favorite to win the ACC, along with being at or near the top of the national rankings this season. After heading on the road, Wake Forest returns home on ovember 3rd (Homecoming , to face the Syracuse Orangemen. Head Coach Dino Babers’ team is trying to reach a bowl game in his third season at the helm, so this should make for an energizing matchup. Wake finishes their home schedule on ovember 17th with their first-ever meeting with the Pittsburgh Panthers. In 2017, in the last game against 2nd-ranked Miami, Pitt freshman quarterback Kenny Pickett led his team to an upset in the final minutes. So this should be a thriller to end the regular season home schedule before the Deacons head to Duke.

Last season was memorable, finishing 8-5 as the highest-scoring team in program history, including an incredible 55-52 victory over Texas A&M in the Belk Bowl at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Year five of the Dave Clawson Era is shaping up to be even more successful, as the Deacons battle to reach a bowl game for the third year in a row.

The season kicks off with a fan favorite on Saturday, August 18th, with the annual Wake

Forest Fan Fest. Gates open at 4:30 pm and the team will be introduced at 5:30 pm. It features players and coaches of the Wake Forest Fall sports teams, along with the spirit squad and Demon Deacon Mascot at BB&T Field, complete with inflatables for the kids, face-painting, food and drinks, autographs and more.

Mall Walking for Health and Fitness

hopping malls often open their doors early for walkers, and it’s quite common to see people circling the mall before shoppers even think about arriving. So what are the positives and negatives of mall walking? I’m glad you asked!

LACE UP AND HIT THE MALL There are many reasons why a shopping mall is a great place to take a healthy stroll.

OUT OF TH W ATH R When you are walking in a mall, you are in a climatecontrolled environment, so you can dress comfortably and not worry about rain, wind, snow, ice or especially heat during this time of the year. As long as you can get to the mall, you’re pretty much guaranteed to walk in comfort.

AWAY FROM TRAFFIC There’s nothing worse when you are walking than to wonder constantly if drivers are going to see you.

With the distractions that drivers have these days, watching out for walkers on the highways isn’t on the top of their list. In the mall, there are no intersections to cross, nothing obstructing your path, no auto fumes or traffic. Other than seeing a good sale and buying something, your walk is pretty safe with few worries.

SECURITY: Most shopping malls have very good security inside and out to ensure you won’t become a victim of crime. If you walk alone, but don’t feel safe when doing so outdoors, the mall is a great option.

GO AT YOUR OW PAC There is no pressure when you are a mall walker. On days that you want to, or feel up to, walking a bit quicker, you can, but if you really just want to take a leisurely stroll one day, then do it! Mall walking is perfect for people of all abilities.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU LAP THE MALL Mall walking isn’t for everyone, for a few reasons…

NO CHANGE OF SCENERY: If you get bored easily, then the monotony of mall walking may not be for you. Even in a mall as large as Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, C, you will circle past the same stores many times in a 30-60 minute walk.

HARD WALKI G SURFAC The floor at a mall is usually very hard, often with a concrete base, to withstand all the abuse it takes year after year.

Because of the hard surface, you may want to wear shoes with more cushioning to lessen the impact.

S ACKS If during your walk you want to take a bit of a rest and have a snack or a cup of coffee, most malls offer quite a few places to do just that.

OVERALL BENEFITS OF MALL WALKING The physical and mental health benefits of physical activity include a lower risk of heart disease and stroke, Type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancers and depressed mood.

These benefits can be gained by adults who obtain recommended amounts of physical activity at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or a combination of both. Recent statistics are that less than 50% of US adults get the recommended amounts of aerobic activity. Walking can be done by a majority of Americans and can be tailored to include those with mobility concerns.

WALKI G BUDDI S If you become a regular mall walker, you are likely to start making friends, and those new buddies can become a network to hold you accountable in your daily walking exercise program.

BY DR. DEBBIE LINVILLE ach month I spotlight two books guaranteed to delight readers and provide fun activities to further extend the meaning of each reading experience. With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 35-year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers and writers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

A (FIRST) PLACE IN HISTORY…THE SKY’S THE LIMIT While in Washington, D.C. over Memorial Day weekend, I toured The ational Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institute. One exhibit after another showcased the ingenuity, creativity, and determination of individuals responsible for the many, many incredible “firsts” that have propelled mankind forward through the centuries. For example, De Rozier and d’Arlandes of France constructed the first untethered hot air balloon in 1783 that kept three passengers (a sheep, a duck, and a rooster aloft for 15 minutes. This marvelous invention paved the way for Steve Fossett to fly around the world, nonstop, in a 10-story high, hot air- and helium-powered balloon, Spirit of Freedom, in 2002. The

by German glider builder Otto Lilienthal demonstrated that flight was possible and proved to be the inspiration needed for Wilbur and Orville Wright to make the world’s first successful “heavier-thanair powered flight” at Kitty Hawk, orth Carolina. The transition from wood, cloth, and tension wire construction of the 1903 Wright Flyer to an all-metal (aluminum, steel, and titanium airplane was realized just a decade later when the German Junkers I made its inaugural flight. The launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, in 1957, began the notorious “space race” between the former Soviet Union and the United States. When Alan Shepard became the first American to

travel into space in 1961, the U.S. was declared the “winner.” Days after this historic feat, President Kennedy promised that an American would land on the moon and return safely home before the end of the decade. Just eight years later, this promise was realized when the Apollo 11 crew stepped foot onto the lunar surface for the first time in human history, and eil Armstrong announced, “The Eagle has landed. That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

These were just some of the amazing inventions on exhibit at the museum, but at every turn, I was reminded that, indeed, anything is possible. We are only limited (on land, sea, air and space by our imagination and fortitude!

HIDDEN FIGURES: THE TRUE STORY OF FOUR BLACK WOMEN AND THE SPACE RACE Based on the best-selling novel and Academy-Award nominee movie, Shetterly shares the true account of Dorothy aughn, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, known as the “human computers” (they were brilliant mathematicians , with younger readers. These four hardworking, intelligent, and persistent African-American women rose above gender and racial barriers to carve out a place of notoriety at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( ASA during the “space race.” Katherine calculated the flight paths for Freedom 7, Apollo 11 and the Space Shuttle missions, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for her remarkable ST M achievements. The once-hidden mathematical contributions of these four women, who helped launch some of the greatest United States successes in space, are brought to light in this hybrid text (part biography, part information . Freeman’s beautiful illustrations and helpful back matter (e.g., term glossary and timeline make this an enjoyable and informative reading experience.

WHO WERE THE WRIGHT BROTHERS? James Buckley Jr. shares the story behind the invention that forever changed the world in this title from the wildly popular Who Was/Were? series. Readers learn about the lives of Orville and Wilbur Wright from the time they were curious young boys to the point in time they designed, built, and flew the world’s first successful airplane. Accompanied by plentiful pen and ink sketches by Tim Foley, the text reveals little-known facts about the brothers of the famous 1 03 flight at Kitty Hawk, orth Carolina. For example, a serious facial injury sustained while playing ice hockey resulted in eighteen-yearold Wilbur leaving school to recover and never completing high school. However, his health problems did not keep him from reading and learning on his own in his father’s extensive library and the rest is, well…one for the history books. The common threads weaving the story together are the support of their parents, the brothers’ insatiable thirst for all things mechanical, and the winning combination for realizing a dream strong work ethic, courage, and determination.

Orville and Wilbur Wright chose Kitty Hawk (a few miles north of Kill Devil Hills because it had favorable conditions for testing their glider (strong, steady winds and soft, sandy landing spaces with the dunes , and because of the success of the Wright Flyer, orth Carolina lays claim to the title “First in Flight.” Select one of the remaining sites and find out what makes them special. Perhaps your family has even traveled to one of these parks.

reading has always been a moment of escapism, discovery, and relaxation. The perpetual saying, “Reading makes you smarter,” remains the motor of our motivation to pick up a book and dive in. Here are some unique benefits of reading fiction novels!

MENTAL STIMULATION. Reading every day for at least 30 minutes will give your mind the constant stimulation that slows down—or even prevents— cognitive decline during later years.

A strong, stimulated mind has very little vacancy for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia! The brain is the body’s most powerful muscle (other than your heart ; it requires exercise to stay strong and healthy. Our brain cells must be used by ways of stimulation; otherwise we will slowly begin to lose those cells eventually, and daily novel reading gives us that needed stimulation.

K OWL DG . There’s a vast oasis of knowledge ready to be inhabited with thirsty minds. Reading novels serves as that oasis. Reading a novel can teach us about a certain region of the given setting of the story. For instance, novels can deeply inform us on metropolitan life, country life, or how schooling was back in the 16th century. We learn the ways of certain cities and how their locals speak (dialect and also the highs and lows of certain regions. Novels embed us in different cultures and languages, giving us knowledge of their customs, traditions, and history. With each novel, regardless of setting, we learn about the sociological aspects surrounding the protagonists. Novels

can tell us about the workforce, justice system, or what education is like in a certain culture. We also learn about different personalities and why people have certain habits.

STRO G R A ALYTICAL SKILLS. When reading a novel, you pay attention to elements: setting, plot, character development, and climax.

Learning the tricks of the trade in your nglish classes, you learn to pick up on symbolism and analyze how it connects with the story. You may predict the ending of The Time Machine or a Sherlock Holmes mystery novel by determining how the protagonist’s characteristics, setting, plot, and the antagonist’s characteristics are interwoven. You can also make realistic connections from the novel to the real world, seeing that certain places, people, and situations do, in fact, exist. Perhaps solving problems and connecting dots while reading novels helps to put knowledge to use and find creative, yet practical solutions to reallife issues.

IMPROVES FOCUS, CONCENTRATION, AND MEMORY. Reading novels gives you a lot to remember subconsciously, such as different characters, their backstories, different settings, subplots, events, and so on. This puts the brain to work, which is a great thing, because an active mind is a stimulated mind, and a stimulated mind has strong focus and concentration. Remembering many elements of a story beefs up your memory. While you are reading, your mind is engaged in that single activity and disengaged by other

distractions, such as your smartphone or that television! Reading lengthens your attention span and improves your short-term memory. With every new memory that forms, new brain pathways are being created, and old ones are being strengthened, making short-term recollection sharper!

B TT R WRITI G SKILLS. Any aspiring novelists out there? ven if you enjoy writing at all, reading helps to amplify your writing skills. very great writer is a better reader. Reading novels gives you countless chances of studying how the author crafts his or her words, composes metaphors, describes characters, scenes, feelings, and senses, and how authors tie all their elements together.

This will leak into your own writing, perhaps without your even noticing!

EMPATHY. With so many strong, sometimes realistic, characters to focus on in a novel, it is easy to become attached to them (yes, even if they are fictitious! . The novelist likely has such a vivid way of describing the character’s emotions that you can’t help but to feel them yourself. Whenever the character has a breakthrough and rises above heartbreak, you rejoice. Whenever they become stricken with poverty, you may cry with them. You can look at this as a “practice round” of empathizing, because it teaches you how to empathize with real people around you.

an opinion, guidance, or the benefit of past experiences to friends and family is part of who we are. On any day, at any hour, someone is trying to “lend the voice of experience” as a help to someone else. Sometimes it’s requested and welcome; many times it’s not. No matter, we all have done it or experienced it at some point.

Being helpful and sharing is part of the human equation. Many times, those comments or reflections have a positive impact or a validation that may be needed at that moment. We all have our vulnerable moments and need those confirmations that we’re headed down the right path, that our dreams are viable, and our expectations reasonable.

What do you do, however, when someone is determined to interject a “Yes, but…” for every positive comment? o matter how positive the feedback, there’s an immediate “Yes, but…” response. It seems that little dark cloud is permanently etched over the person’s head! Perhaps it is.

Not everyone is optimistic or positive about life and all it offers. A recent quote summarizes this thinking quite well “ egative people have a problem for every solution.” The author of this pronouncement is unknown, but the statement is certainly thought-provoking. It’s a spin on the widely known optimistic statement, “The glass is half full.” The pessimist sees the same glass as halfempty, and the opportunist just drinks the water and moves on. It’s all in the perception.

WAYS TO COUNTER NEGATIVITY: Set personal boundaries. Rather than eliminating negatively minded family and friends, just prepare yourself for their visit. Listen, but avoid buying into the negative. It’s their journey, not yours.

Stay positive. Pollyanna had the right idea, look for the good; it’s there. Ask to hear about something good that happened to that friend or family member. It’s possible they don’t realize how negative their thoughts have become.

Strive to look for something positive every day.

Smile. Most people will smile back. Test it out for yourself.

Use the manners we were taught as kids.

“Please” and “Thank you” go a long way.

egative energy can be draining; it can take the joy right out of the day, but only if you let it. When confronted with negativity, set your own boundaries and avoid being sucked into that black hole of despair.

Take the high road. Perhaps you’re on that high road alone sometimes, but avoiding the gutters and ditches that you didn’t create is a better road than being a passenger on a negative trip.

Recognize the signs of negativity around you. Listen to your feelings. Do you leave an encounter feeling that your energy is drained, that you’ve been onguard during the interaction, or that the vibe is just “off”? Those are signals to notice and be aware of taking on someone else’s issues.

Let go. Similar to taking the high road, just letting go of someone else’s drama, dilemma or problem is a weight off your shoulders. We all need reminding that we can’t fix everything.

Remember the adage that the squeaky wheel gets greased? The same can be said for negativity. Just watch the evening news. What are the lead stories?

Where are the upbeat, positive stories positioned? You got it—lead with negative and end on a positive note. The more dramatic the story, the more likely it is to lead off.

Don’t take it personally if someone is in a negative mood. Be a ray of sunshine for them.

has been a running joke in my family to comment the day before a sibling turns 18 that if they were planning on breaking any laws, now was the time. However jokingly this is suggested, it is nonetheless naive. The implication of being treated as a child by the justice system before turning 18 and, therefore, having a lighter punishment is misguided. Not only are adolescents in North Carolina considered adults in our justice system by age 16, but also, depending on the severity of the crime, children much younger than even 16 can be prosecuted, not by the Juvenile Court, but by the Criminal Court. This concept often calls into question our justice system’s concern for the wellbeing of minors.

Say, you are taken into custody here in orth Carolina for underage drinking. You will immediately be assigned a court counselor who has 2 to 3 weeks to determine whether your case should be dropped or go to Juvenile or Criminal Court. If you are over 15 and you are not a first-time offender, there is a good chance you will be tried as an adult in the Criminal Court. If your crime is a more severe felony like murder, rape, or burglary, no matter how old you are or if it is a first offense, you can, and probably will, be sent to Criminal Court.

The main difference between the two is illustrated by the purposes they claim to serve. Juvenile Court is preferable for teens because its purpose is to rehabilitate, whereas Criminal Court serves to punish. There is and has been a lot of controversy about whether or not those under the age of 18 should ever be tried as adults. Commentators that condemn youths being tried as adults point out higher recidivism in these youths and note that these children will be put in temporary or permanent adult facilities that are unsuitable or possibly dangerous for children.

Though this evidence is persuasive, we must consider cases such as that of North Carolina’s Raistlin Martin, age 17, who admitted in February to killing his sleeping grandfather with a hatchet. His actions were horrific and premeditated; this is an instance where

grave measures are expected to be taken to ensure that a criminal comes to justice. On the one hand, there are those who say most adolescent minds are not developed enough to fully differentiate between right and wrong, and on the other, those who believe the age of the perpetrator is inconsequential when it comes to violent crimes.

The issue of trying minors as adults is one of many public matters that cannot be solved with a blanket solution. Due to the broken society we live in, misconduct is not uncommon, and each case is unique.

However one views the justice system, on the whole, it is evident that our government is highly interested in protecting its youths. The Juvenile Court system itself was implemented due to the knowledge that the majority of minors are highly impressionable and still developing mentally. Additionally, the determination to foster community-conscious members of society has spurred the implementation of an institution called Teen Court. Minors who, in Juvenile Court, have pleaded guilty to minor, first-time offenses can choose to be sentenced by a jury of their peers (justice for teens by teens . Teen volunteers take on the role of jurors, lawyers, and judges to determine an appropriate sentence (conditions like community service, letters of apology, or instructive courses .

Teen Court exemplifies the Juvenile Court’s mission: to cultivate growth over condemnation. A friend of mine who formerly acted as a Teen Court juror described to me a case he served on where a sixteen-year-old was sentenced for shooting strangers with a BB gun. A mere week after his sentencing, the sixteen-year-old was invited to join the Teen Court jury, where he served alongside my friend to continue the cycle of rehabilitation. Teen Court offers a small-scale illustration of both the educational purpose of Juvenile Court and potential severity of Criminal Court, both of which serve our citizens and our government.

A NEW YEAR

When

most of us think of the ew Year, we think of January 1st. As a student or parent, however, we know it differently. The new year begins sometime in August, depending on where you are in the education process. I’ve always found this process to be quite cyclical in its emotional pattern, and one that is fraught with a variety of sentiments throughout its life cycle. One common thread across the pattern, though, is the shared emotions it brings at the beginning and the end.

On the first day of kindergarten (and the days leading up to it , young children are excited to start their educational journey.

Parents, on the other hand, understanding what it entails, are worried and stressed, oftentimes concerned about how their child will react to the changes taking place in each of their lives. The reaction tends to be similar, regardless of the prep work ahead of time. A child’s excitement quickly turns to fear and homesickness, the minute they watch their parents walk out the classroom door for the first time in the morning, leaving them alone with their classmates and teachers. This separation anxiety is difficult to overcome, not only for the children, but for the parents as well, as they wrestle with the emotions of leaving their little ones behind for the first time.

By the time the children reach middle school, they’ve become experienced with the separation. They’re older, and they understand better what to expect, so the transition occurs more smoothly.

Once high school comes around, they are excited once again, about their school, the activities, clubs, and sports they’re interested in, seeing the friends again they’ve made through the years, and viewing themselves as more mature and “cool,” now that they’re in the latter stages of their educational journey. As for parents, they’re thinking about grades more seriously if college is on the horizon. They want to make sure they’re guiding their child correctly, keeping them focused, on the right path, away from negative distractions and influences, all while allowing them the space to grow and mature into their own unique selves and personalities.

As for those heading off to college, the military, or full-

time employment on a permanent basis after their recent graduation, this time of year brings even more complex issues and concerns. Independence suddenly becomes a predominant aspect of their lives. To this point, many of their decisions have been made for them; their paths have been structured in a way that leaves only a little room for elective choices and opportunities. Now, however, their decisions are their own. Parents are still there to provide advice; and yet, in reality, the parental influence has less potency than it had previously up to this point.

As adults, they can and do begin to separate themselves and take control of their lives, often in ways parents never expected. The results can range from exciting to scary, surprising, pleasing, unsettling, impressive, worrisome, satisfying and fulfilling.

Yes, emotions run the gamut this time of year, depending on where you are on the spectrum. The ten months that follow will bring with them lots of experiences, memories, friendships made, lessons learned, good times and bad, ups and downs, and yet through it all they persevere, and grow and mature into the people they will ultimately become. Life throws a lot of obstacles and challenges their way, and they have to learn how to navigate the rough waters. These challenges help to prepare them to manage comparable ones they will ultimately face the rest of their lives. It gives them the confidence that they have what it takes to overcome those trials and come out on the other side stronger, smarter, and better as a result.

As for us parents, just remember the excitement the end of the school year brings, accomplishments earned, mountains conquered, and all the wonderful memories made throughout this time. And let that be your source of inspiration to get them started out on the right foot, and help you to be confident you can handle not only helping them manage their lives during this time, but also to manage yours in the process with great success.

Jesus said, “Be sure of this: I am with you always.”. ~ Matthew 28:20 Everybody has a favorite story, right? It could be true or pretend. Maybe it’s a story from a book or something you saw on TV or in a movie. It might even be something you heard in a song or dreamed while you were sleeping.

You’ve probably noticed that the stories here in “Children’s Church” are stories or lessons from the Bible. Do you have a favorite Bible story? It could be the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden. How about Noah saving all the animals in that big boat? Daniel thrown in with the lions is scary, but it has a happy ending. Jesus making Lazarus alive again is just amazing!

When a good story comes to an end, you might feel sad. Maybe you say, “Please read it again!” Here’s some good news: the story of Jesus —the best story ever!—doesn’t end. He was born as a baby. He grew up and learned how to help His mom and dad. Then He became a teacher. He did miracles. Then He died. If that were the end of the story, it would be very sad…but that’s not the end of the story! Jesus came back to life again, and He lives forever with his Father God in heaven.

CHILDREN’S CHURCH

Wait! The verse above says that Jesus is with us always. If He’s in heaven, how can He be with us? I mean, have you ever seen Him? Have your friends seen Him? I haven’t. The Bible tells us that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. We can’t see the Holy Spirit, either, but He “talks” to our heart. He helps us learn about Jesus and love Him more and more. The Holy Spirit helps us remember that Jesus is always with us, even though we can’t see Him.

If you ever feel alone or scared, or wonder where God is, remember what Jesus said: “I am with you always.” This isn’t a made-up fairy tale. God’s story is true. It’s the best story ever, and this wonderful story about Jesus will never end.

In the Seat Next to You

few years back, a woman named Patty Ris was enjoying a meal at the assisted living center where she lived when she began to choke on a piece of food. The gentleman sitting beside her was a retired physician, so he knew exactly what to do to help.

Immediately he stood her up, wrapped his arms around her mid-section and, after a few upward thrusts with his fists, the food became dislodged.

It’s no surprise, really, that the man was so adept at performing the procedure that saved the woman’s life.

After all, this wasn’t just any retired physician. It was renowned chest surgeon, Dr. Henry Heimlich...yes, that Dr. Heimlich.

After the incident, Patty wrote Dr. Heimlich a thank you note that read, in part, “God put me in this seat next to you.”

I’ve learned that the people in our lives, while often there for just a season, are usually there for a reason. Take a moment to think about the people whom God has at your “table” right now. Some of them may be desperately in need of help, and with your unique combination of gifts, wisdom, and experience, you are the one meant to do the helping. Others may have just the things you need for the struggles you are facing. Some of the people at your “dinner table” are there for you to learn something from.

Others need to learn something from you.

So, don’t be so quick to dismiss the person sitting next to you on the plane, or your hairdresser, or your child’s teacher, or the waitress delivering your hamburger, as just random people who happen to cross your path. Maybe they are. Or, maybe they are part of a much bigger plan God is working out. And, just maybe, they were meant to save your life.

The Life of Riley Have

you ever heard the expression “Life of Riley”? It’s used to describe someone who lives a carefree, luxurious life.

Lots of people assume that pastors live the “Life of Riley.” After all, when they’re not jetting around the world, speaking at churches and visiting missionaries, they’re either out playing golf or lounging in their office reading or chatting with church members and staff, right?

Not quite.

The truth is that many pastors live a life of worry and depression. Not only do they have church issues to deal with, but they also have family problems and bills to pay like the rest of us. And, they often have no one to confide in, which can lead to feelings of isolation and abandonment.

You can be the one to remind your pastor that he is loved and appreciated. Take time this week to reach out to your pastor and let him know you care.

What Will Be Your Legacy?

fact for you August is national “What Will be Your legacy?” month. It’s a pretty profound question. Let’s start with the basics, so we can all be on the same page…what is a legacy? While technically defined as “an inheritance,” the question more often than not makes us wonder how we will be remembered “What have we done (or what are we doing that will make people remember us when we’re gone?”

This month, I want to talk about the characteristics of two women – Phoebe and Dorcas. Phoebe and Dorcas both have a passing mention in the Bible, but despite the few words written about them, they have made a lasting impression. A legacy that has endured for the better part of 2000 years.

Let’s start with Phoebe.

The Apostle Paul introduced her to us in Romans 16 1-2. The LT version reads, “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a deacon in the church in Cenchrea. Welcome her in the Lord as one who is worthy of honor among God’s people. Help her in whatever she needs, for she has been helpful to many, and especially to me.”

Phoebe was being introduced as a member of the Christian church, and while we know very little about her, the words, “She has been very helpful to many, and especially to me,” indicate that she was a Believer who had a servant’s heart. We can deduce that when it came to the Fruits of the Spirit, Phoebe excelled in kindness.

Now, let’s talk about Dorcas.

She is actually known by two names in the Bible—Dorcas and Tabitha. Dorcas is the Greek and Tabitha is the Aramaic. Whichever version of the name you choose to use, her story is told in Acts 36-43.

While Dorcas gets a bit more narrative than our friend, Phoebe, let’s focus on Acts 9:36b, which describes her character “She was full of good works and acts of charity.”

The rest of the verses tell us about her death and how Peter was asked to come. When he arrived, verse 3 states, “All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them.” So, we know a little more about Dorcas. We know she was one who worked selflessly to do good for others who needed her help, and we know she was a seamstress. But we still don’t know much. However, we can deduce that like Phoebe, Dorcas had a servant’s heart. She demonstrated care for others through her handiwork and gave without expecting anything in return.

And through his faith, Peter prayed, and God restored her life, so she could continue ministering to others for a while more.

The attribute of “kindness” is a single word used to define a woman who lived centuries ahead of us. And though I never knew her personally, she left a legacy that I’d love to be known for, too.

Just as I’d like to be remembered for Phoebe’s kindness, I’d like to be remembered for a helpful spirit like Dorcas’.

Her spiritual gifts must have included a spirit of service. I imagine she was a quiet soul who probably never realized the impact she left on the ones she helped. Yet, we still remember her.

But kindness is something that I have to be diligent about. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not deliberately mean, but unfortunately, I can get easily wrapped up in my own little world. Ephesians 4:32 exhorts us to “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” It’s clear from the few words written about her that Phoebe embraced this mindset. So much so, that Paul felt compelled to share this significant detail about her.

When I think about my own legacy, I want to be remembered as a woman who was given grace, and who gave it. Friends, as a former prodigal, I wasted years living for myself. It’s just no fun. The best legacy I can leave to my family and friends is the memory of a woman who was, first and foremost, a girl who loved Jesus with her whole heart. Because He passed on a legacy to me—a legacy of love and eternal life through faith in Him.

And with kindness comes compassion, caring, and a loving heart (among other wonderful gifts .

If people remember me for the way Jesus changed me, that will be the most amazing legacy I could ever hope to leave. It’s the most impactful legacy, because it’s a legacy of eternal endurance.

And one day, when I go to heaven, because of their lasting legacy, I will be able personally to thank Phoebe and Dorcas for their noteworthy role in Scripture and the lasting example their legacy left for me and countless others.

Summer

reading lists have always been a staple in my annual routine—as steadfast as turkey on Thanksgiving and Frasier Fir hunting in December. As a child, the blissful freedom from schoolwork and the welcomed change of pace from the weekday grind was always accompanied by the careful creation of a list donned with the names and authors of texts I wanted to indulge in. This was the one time of year reading wasn’t mandatory, which somehow made the adventure exponentially more fun.

This year has been no different, with my list including adventures like Punke’s The Revenant, Parker’s Once a Runner, and my former TA in “American Christianity,” Kate Bowler’s, touching memoir, Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved. Each of these I would recommend.

Last night, however, I turned the final pages of the final book on this year’s list. Still unable to sleep (because this pregnancy thing is becoming quite uncomfortable! , I perused our home library in search of my next adventure in the wee hours of the morning.

I came across a collection of stories written by my “Uncle” Bo Cash. A life-long friend of my father and an avid outdoorsman, I knew Uncle Bo as the man who raised bird-hunting dogs, always carried a fly rod, and had the largest collection of Catawba

Storytelling CHURCH Indian arrowheads I had ever seen. Like a trout-whisperer, this man could catch an 18-inch trout in 2-inch deep waters. He was in real life much the way television edits the Saturday AM fishing shows; with every cast bringing in a catch. Reading the pages of his tales, his stories called to mind the very reason I have loved and admired this man all my life he is a vague reflection of who I imagined my father would be if he had not married my mother, settled down and had us girls.

The opening chapter of Colossians boldly asserts the “Christ Hymn” “He is the visible image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (1 15 . The Colossae community’s Christological dispute finds resolution in the assertion of the supremacy of Christ. All creation throughout all of history has continually displayed the glory of God; and yet, to us humans, God remains incomprehensible.

The most genuine and authentic image of God is revealed in Jesus, the Christ. The collection of stories we have witnessing to his life, teaching, death, and resurrection reveals to us the character of our Creator God, who welcomes the outcast, forgives the sinner, delights in children, and spends a great deal of his time with his fishing buddies alongside the Sea of Galilee.

The universal Christian Church is the body of Christ; we are a part of the image of

God in the world. How people experience our shared life together in worship and faith reflects, in part, the divine revelation of God’s redeeming love for the world.

Our very existence as a people committed to preaching and teaching grounded in Scripture, informed by tradition, enlivened by experience and tested by reason, is for the world a glimpse of our Heavenly Father.

We are a redeemed and a redeeming fellowship, living in a covenant of grace, whose task is to give expression to the mysterious reality of God’s presence, peace and power in the world. However, because we are also a human institution, our faithfulness to this task is oven overwhelmed by images of other gods we idolize the influence of capitalism, politics, and wealth only feed our addiction to power and further blight the image of the Creator-Redeemer-Sustainer-God we are designed to share.

Despite our human condition, God’s loving grace continues to work in and through us: in the church, people still encounter the divine, experience renewal, receive forgiveness and live into redemption.

Wherever we continue the ministry of traveling beyond borders, bridging chasms of division, tearing down walls of inhumanity, and cultivating holiness, we tell and retell those sweet stories of the God who became flesh in Jesus Christ.

On September 14th, 2018, these two combine for the 13th-Annual Signature Chefs Auction. This event is the March of Dimes premier fundraiser. Each year, culinary excellence in WinstonSalem, NC is celebrated with top chefs featuring tastings of their creations for guests. The dynamic, interactive cocktail party features local flavors and includes an exciting Live and Silent Auction.

A HISTORY OF HELPING This year the March of Dimes is its celebrating 80th anniversary.

In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, better known as March of Dimes, to end polio. The initial donations funded Dr. Jonas Salk’s work on the polio vaccine and ultimately the cure to the disease. With that success behind the organization, March of Dimes began to focus on fighting birth defects, premature birth, and infant death

The Signature Chefs Auction has become not only the largest fundraiser for March of Dimes, but a time when guests can donate to a great cause and enjoy the delicious food from the top chefs and restaurants in our community. Winston-Salem is known for its eclectic offering of restaurants, and this event is a great way to get a little taste of some of the ones you may not have tried before.

“The evening begins with a gala cocktail reception where guests are treated to delicious tasting from top local chefs and given the chance to bid on unique Silent Auction packages.

Guests are then moved to a seated Live Auction for opportunities to bid on once-in-alifetime travel and culinary packages. We end the evening with a compelling appeal to support the mission of the March of Dimes,” commented Elizabeth. There are two Signature Chefs’ Auctions this year, one in Winston-Salem, this year on September 14th, 2018, and the other in Greensboro, NC, on October 5th, 2018; each has been very successful in past years.

“In 2017, the Winston-Salem Auction raised $110,000, and the Greensboro Auction raised $150,000. This year, our goals are $125,000 and $165,000, respectively,” Elizabeth stated. Beyond tasting the delicious offerings from our city’s best chefs, guests can also vote on their favorite chefs and a three-judge panel will vote for Chef of the Year.

Some of the great auction items include beachfront resort accommodations at St. Vincent and The Grenadines, an unparalleled night of fine dining with Chef Jeff Bacon from Providence Restaurant, beautifully turned wood vases, date-night packages, drinks-aroundtown packages, tickets to the opera, symphony and plays, and so much more.

“All funds raised go towards our efforts on local, state and national levels. We fund scientific research at our Prematurity Research Centers to improve the health of moms and babies.

We work with the medical community by hosting professional conferences, aiding nursing continuing education and providing other online learning opportunities. We advocate for policies that prioritize the health of moms and babies that improve women’s access to preconception, prenatal and interconnection education, enhance prenatal care and riskreduction services. We fund community grants for local programs and initiatives that are addressing priority areas,” Elizabeth enumerated.

Once again the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem is the location for the event, with a variety of sponsorships available, as well as tables for $1500, host couple tickets for $400 and individual tickets for $150. Reservations are required. For the Greensboro Auction, the Downtown Greensboro Marriott is the location, with the same ticket costs.

It’s a GRAND Life

So,

you know how at the end of the Super Bowl they ask the winning quarterback what he’s going to do now and his answer is always, “I’m going to Disney World!”? Well, that always makes me smile. I admit it – I love Disney World! Fortunately, so does my family. We take everyone in our immediate family every other year, but in the last few years, my husband, our youngest daughter, and son-in-law have gone once or twice every year.

Recently, we went together along with our two-year-old granddaughter. We have worked out a wonderful system for the traveling part. My husband and son-in-law take everything we will need and make the nine-plus hour drive to Orlando. Meanwhile, my daughter, two-year-old granddaughter and I catch a flight and arrive in Florida in an hour and a half. Yes, it’s a well-honed plan – at least for us. No having a toddler strapped in a car seat for what would seem to her to be endless hours; having to stop frequently for breaks; providing constant entertainment; or, knowing she needs and wants a nap, but not being able to fall asleep sitting up.

However, flying with a toddler, although better than being strapped in a car seat for a long, long drive, is not without issue. We discovered this the first time we flew with her last October. Not being two years old yet, she did not have to have her own seat. This saves money, but you also have a squirmy child for most of the duration of the flight.

It is hard to explain to an 18-month old why she can’t get down and

play in the aisle. My daughter and I both had aisle seats, so we passed her back and forth when she started to get bored. There was one minor incident involving a spilled drink, but fortunately, the passenger was an understanding mom heading to “the happiest place on earth” with her family.

This trip, since she was now two years old, meant she had to have her own ticket. It was nice for her to have a seat, and she sat in it most of the time. She did not like the take-off this time but was content to watch a movie on her mom’s phone for most of the flight. Many people might wonder how much time you really save by flying. It is true, by the time you leave home, get to the airport, wait to board, wait to take-off, fly, wait to de-plane, hike to the Magical Express bus to go to your resort hotel, wait for it to depart and finally arrive at your hotel, you probably could have driven from home in about the same time. Nevertheless, it is the changes and movement that, my granddaughter at least, happily dealt with.

This trip was, for us, different from most of the others we had taken to

Disney World, but we had anticipated that. For one, we were with a toddler; it was much warmer and more crowded; having been so many times before, we didn’t feel pressured to do everything Disney World has to offer; or get in the minute a park opened or stay until it closed.

One of the best things about this trip was being able to experience all of Disney World daily through the eyes of our granddaughter. It was wonderful to see her reactions to the characters she loved from the movies.

I wondered if she would love them or be afraid – it was love. She was a trooper the whole five days we were there. She got to sleep in after long days, go swimming, watch parades and fireworks, and go shopping – surprising us with what she chose, but still two months later, loving her choices.

Having just been, I am already looking forward to having our entire family, and what will then be seven grandchildren, going in January. My husband and I move around with each family during the day and hear about everyone’s day at dinner. It makes me smile knowing that my “happiest place on earth” is also their’s!

The Empty Nest

Are

you looking forward to the day your children leave the nest, or are you at that stage of life already? It’s a time that most parents alternately dread or look forward to. You hope, as parents, that your children are prepared to face life on their own; however, secretly you may hope that they need you a little longer. Your children, on the other hand, may be pulling away and making their own decisions, while as parents, you hold back from saying, “you need to rethink that” or, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” It’s a challenging time from either point of view.

StageOfLife.com has some interesting statistics on what empty nesters expect to occur. For instance, 26% of potential empty nesters think that they will feel like newlyweds again; 34% expect to be closer to their spouses without the kids around. 58% indicate they’re ready for their kids to move out; 70% of dads are more ready than moms. Ultimately, 40% of potential empty nesters think that their adult children will move back home in at some point. On the other side, 30% of adult children expect their parents to move in with them later in life.

What’s an empty nester to do?

The short answer is, “Anything you want.” There are so many options to pick from that you may want to spend time focusing in on a few at first, to avoid being overwhelmed and unable to make a choice.

Redecorating the kid’s room comes to mind. There are many clichés about redoing the kid’s room once he or she leaves—an exercise room, a study/office, a hobby room, a new guest room, or a new bathroom—lots of options to pick from. Maybe small changes are options at first, just in case the kids come back—fresh paint,

new curtains, or new pillows. Is that wishful thinking working overtime? Maybe so, but at least don’t turn their former room into a shrine for the moment in time they left. When they do visit, they don’t want to feel they’re 18 all over again.

Have you always wanted to travel? Planning a long road trip coast to coast may be just the thing to break away from the family nest to see what’s around the bend. Sharing the sights with family and friends back home and making new memories can be an invigorating, energizing experience. Everyone needs that “once in a lifetime trip experience.”

Have you always dreamed of being a gourmet cook? With the picky eaters out of the house, now’s the time to sign up for a class or two. Try some new cuisines and broaden your taste palate. With those new cooking skills in your arsenal, it’s time to entertain. Break out the good china and linens. Who’s going to use it if you don’t? Make dinner an event once in a while.

Volunteering at local agencies, groups, or the local rescue shelter are ways to keep busy, but they also provide a means to give back to the community. You’ll make new friends and find even more interests.

Take care of yourself for a change. Take up an exercise routine.

You’ll need it to get your energy up for all your other activities!

Do empty nesters miss their children? Certainly, but at the same time, they have many new things to share with their adult children, which, in turn, makes their children’s decision to leave the nest easier. It’s a win-win.

Enjoy the nest when it’s full; plan and enjoy it when it’s empty!

If

you’re looking for adventure, a trip to the NC mountains to see waterfalls always makes for a great day or weekend trip.

Especially since there are more than 300 waterfalls to choose from within our state!

A few years ago, our family planned an overnight camping trip at Stone Mountain State Park (just up Interstate 77 towards Virginia). As soon as we set up camp, we discovered a trail nearby and hiked it for close to an hour. At the end of our hike, we were unexpectedly greeted by a beautiful, pristine little waterfall. My kids were overjoyed and could not stop talking about it. They acted like they had uncovered one of the earth’s greatest mysteries. It was at that moment our simple camping trip became an all-out waterfall-seeking expedition, and we did just that.

Stone Mountain State Park has four waterfalls, and I think we found all of them, including little ones that are not officially mentioned on the park’s website. The next morning we set out on another hike from right behind our tent and discovered another little waterfall. After that, we got in the car and drove down the access road to find the biggest, best fall we could find…and landed at Widow’s Creek Falls.

Not only were these falls beautiful, but the kids got to slide down them as well. The falls are actually 25’ high, but the bigger falls work their way down to smaller falls, which feed to a pool that’s the perfect depth for sliders to splash into.

Some older kids actually braved the bigger falls, but we corralled our kids in the lower falls, which are completely safe and actually don’t bruise your rear after a trip down! Our kids rode the falls for over an hour and had a blast. This is a muststop if you ever find yourself at Stone Mountain.

According to this website, the closest falls to the Triad are those found at Hanging Rock State Park. You can also find such falls at Stone Mountain (as we did), or in the Wilson Creek area north of Morganton, as well as at South Mountain State Park, south of Morganton.

Another must-see is Sliding Rock near Hendersonville, NC. According to the website, Sliding Rock is a 50-foot natural water slide that drops you into a 7-foot deep pool of water.

There are two observation platforms and lifeguards on duty during the season. We’ve made this trip once before, and we’re planning to go back!

The NC Waterfalls website remarks that the majority of North Carolina waterfalls are concentrated in Transylvania, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Haywood counties, but there is another big grouping of falls where the Blue Ridge Parkway runs near Mitchell, McDowell, Avery, and Burke counties.

If you are planning a trip to this area to visit waterfalls, the site recommends staying in or near Brevard in Transylvania County and exploring from there. It states that there are more waterfalls in this area than you could visit in a week’s time, and you’ll be only a few miles from upstate South Carolina, where you will find even more waterfalls.

Unexpected Waffle Iron Recipes

BY KRISTI JOHNSON MARION Sometimes the hardest & thing about cooking an omelet, a grilled EMILY DODSON cheese, a quesadilla, etc., is the flipping! Using a waffle iron to make these unexpected dishes takes the “flipping” risk out of the equation and they cook twice as fast! ’Tweens and ’teens will love making these easy unique recipes. These recipes are all made using a round Belgian-style waffle maker, though it really only matters for the quesadillas.

WAFFLE IRON CHICKEN QUESADILLAS

OMELET WAFFLES

(Makes 6 6-inch quesadillas)

PIZZA WAFFLES

INGREDIENTS:

2 eggs (per omelet)

1 small rotisserie chicken, shredded

1 can of biscuits

Bell peppers (red, green, yellow, orange— your choice), diced

1 green pepper, seeded & diced

Pizza sauce or sundried tomato sauce

2 Tbsp. olive oil, divided

Mini-pepperoni slices

Salt & pepper

8 oz. of shredded mozzarella

12 6-inch flour tortillas

DIRECTIONS:

Yellow onion, diced 1Tbsp. shredded cheddar cheese Other omelet favorites, such as mushrooms, diced ham or crumbled bacon, optional

8 oz. of shredded Mexican cheese blend Salsa

Salt & pepper to taste

1. Season shredded chicken with salt and pepper and set aside.

1. Turn on waffle iron and spray with cooking spray.

2. In a small skillet, add a tablespoon of olive oil and sauté green peppers lightly to soften for about four minutes.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and add salt and pepper.

3. Heat your waffle iron.

3. Add the diced ingredients.

4. Lightly coat one side of each tortilla.

5. Lay one tortilla, oil-side down, on the griddle, then spoon on green peppers, adding a few tablespoons of the shredded chicken and topping with about one-third cup of the cheese

4. Pour omelet mixture onto waffle maker, making sure it doesn’t overflow.

5. If your waffle iron has a timer, ignore it for this recipe and cook until the eggs are to your desired firmness.

6. Top with more shredded cheese, fresh tomato slices if you like, and serve.

6. Top with another tortilla (oil-side up) and gently close the waffle iron, adding more and more pressure. Hold for 30 seconds. Let go and continue cooking another 2-3 minutes, putting pressure on it occasionally.

7. Once the tortilla is golden brown enough to your liking, remove with a fork or spatula and let cool on a plate for one minute.

8. Cut into 4 wedges along the waffle marks and serve with salsa.

2. Stretch out a piece of the pre-cut biscuit dough to a 4- or 5-inch diameter and place into the center of heated waffle iron.

3. Add pizza sauce, cheese and pepperoni, leaving room at the edge for the “crust.”

4. Stretch out another piece of dough to the same size and place on top, sealing the edges with your fingers.

5. Close the waffle iron and cook about 3 minutes, until it is golden brown.

6. Slice into four wedges and serve.

(NOTE: Be sure to use pizza sauce or sundried tomato sauce, as pasta sauce is too thin.)

Key Lime Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce

is in full swing with long, hot days and cookouts with family and friends.

There’s nothing like topping off an afternoon of grilling out with a dessert that’s both sweet and tart! The perfect dessert for any summertime gathering is Key Lime Cheesecake…it’s one delicious summertime treat!

INGREDIENTS 2 cups graham cracker crumbs ¼ cup white sugar ½ cup butter, melted 3 8-oz. packages of cream cheese, softened 1¼ cups sugar 3 large eggs 1 8-oz. container sour cream 1½ tsp. grated lime rind (lime zest) ½ cup Key Lime Juice (recommend Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe juice; order online only)

PREPARATION • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

• Stir together first three ingredients and firmly press onto the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of a greased 9-inch springform pan.

• Bake crust at 350 degrees for 8 minutes; cool completely. Reduce oven to 325 degrees.

• Beat cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy; gradually add 1¼ cups of sugar, beating till blended.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in sour cream, rind and juice. Pour batter into cooled crust.

• Place in 325 degrees oven and bake for 1 hour and 5 minutes; turn the oven off.

Partially open the oven door; let stand in oven for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and immediately run a knife around the edge of pan, releasing the sides.

• Cool completely in pan on a wire rack; cover and chill 8 hours. Garnish with strawberry slices, blueberries and lime rind.

Strawberry Sauce INGREDIENTS 1 lb. fresh strawberries, rinsed, hulled and thickly sliced cup sugar 1 Tbs. lemon juice

INSTRUCTIONS • In a medium saucepan, combine sliced strawberries, sugar and 1 Tbsp. lemon juice. Place over medium heat and bring to a boil, reduce heat, stirring to prevent from burning. Strawberries will release juice without any mashing required.

• Reduce heat to low-medium and simmer 20-30 minutes or until the sauce has thickened, continuing to stir occasionally. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Keep in mind sauce will thicken up slightly as it cools and even more with refrigeration.

• Drizzle over the top slices of the cheesecake when serving.

Raspberry Sauce INGREDIENTS ½ jar seedless raspberry jam ½ cup fresh raspberries, halved 1 Tbsp. lemon juice • Cook all ingredients over medium heat, stirring constantly, so the sauce cooks but doesn’t stick. Once the jam turns into a liquid, remove from heat and cool, then refrigerate. Drizzle over slices of cheesecake when served.
