has awoken from her winter slumber and what a glorious sight it is! Trees are budding, flowers are blooming at a rapid pace and lawns were being mown in March, despite our surprise snow! I just love spring! Nature goes from monochrome to technicolor, seemingly overnight! I love being outside and have ever since I was a little girl. I don’t like the cold very much, so I couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of getting to spend more time in my favorite place in the coming weeks.

I haven’t given much of an update on my health lately, but I’m doing great. I had expanders put in a couple weeks ago to start my breast reconstruction. It took me a little by surprise, as I was in a lot more pain after that surgery than the mastectomy, but God is good and in a week or so I was already feeling better. Huge shout out for my friend Sandy Holt, as she finished her chemo and like me is on the road to recovery!

April is our annual Spring Home Issue and packed with lots of advertisers and articles related to your home. Spring is an exciting time for many, since they are either buying or selling their home. My oldest daughter and husband are in the process of buying their first home and we couldn’t be happier for them! Hospice & Palliative CareCenter Announces New Name to Better Reflect Mission and Support Services Hospice & Palliative CareCenter (HPCC) is changing its name, in a deliberate and strategic step towards embracing a new identity.

This new identity reflects the organization’s distinctive characteristics and establishes a brand that patients and families can ask for by name.

A Name to Reflect the Organization’s Mission “We are thrilled to announce our new name is Trellis Supportive Care,” said Linda Darden, President and CEO. “Selecting a provider when facing an advanced illness is not a common life event, and we understand that there are confusingly similar names which make selecting a hospice and palliative care provider challenging. We believe Trellis Supportive Care is a unique and memorable name that accurately reflects the mission of our organization.”

The name “Trellis” was chosen to represent the framework of support the organization provides to patients and families. “We also like the sense of tranquility and peace of mind the name evokes, since a trellis is typically a garden structure that supports and guides plants and vines as they find their way,” added Darden.

A True Framework of Support Since 1979, hospice care has been the cornerstone of the organization’s care; however, over the years, new and expanded programs have been introduced. These programs include grief counseling and advance care planning — both free of charge — for anyone in the community, as well as expanded palliative care services designed to meet the needs of patients earlier in the disease process. In 1998 the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home was opened, providing around-the-clock care to patients and families needing short-term inpatient care or respite care.

Fun forthe Whole Family at the Piedmont Earth Day Fair April 21, 10AM - 4 PM

are invited to a community celebration—the Annual Piedmont Earth Day Fair—on Saturday, April 21st, 2018, from 10AM–4 PM at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, rain or shine. The festival, hosted by the local nonprofit organization, Piedmont Environmental Alliance (PEA , is packed with family-friendly activities and demonstrations, great food and music, artwork, and interesting exhibits—all free to the public.

This year, many of the Fair’s featured activities will focus on the theme, “Roots of Change,” connecting people with information and actions they can use to support a more sustainable community. “Now more than ever, people are looking for local ways to take action and build community,” explained Piedmont Environmental Alliance Executive Director Jamie Maier. “The Earth Day Fair is a fun way to engage with, and learn about, PEA’s efforts to create a healthier, more economically vibrant and sustainable community.”

The Fair’s top-notch children’s activities will include water play, arts and crafts, animals and insects, face-painting, and yoga. Don’t miss the Children’s Corner, which features special activities hosted

by Art for Art’s Sake, Kaleideum, and the Sawtooth School for Visual Art. “Kaleideum is thrilled to partner with Piedmont Environmental Alliance for the Earth Day Fair this year. We love being part of this great event that promotes environmental awareness and community involvement for people of all ages,” declared Kelli Isenhour, Director of Education at Kaleideum North.

School-aged children are encouraged to participate in the Earth Day Fair Art Contest. Students sign up online to bring artwork to the fair that expresses their connection to Earth Day or the festival’s theme, Roots of Change. Artwork will be displayed around the fair and seen by thousands of people. A panel of community judges will award prizes (by age group) in the afternoon.

The fair will also feature free environmentally-themed demonstrations that provide practical tips and information for

living a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle— including how to start composting, backyard beekeeping, and natural gardening. At the Swap Shop, attendees can trade gently used books, jewelry and clothing and receive new (to you) items for free. And, families will have fun tapping their feet to music at the fair. The North Carolina Songwriter’s Co-op is providing a great lineup of musicians who will play throughout the festival, joined by local favorites Farewell Friends, Barrie Howard, and Emily Stewart.

Fairgoers will experience Piedmont Environmental Alliance’s innovative education programs live at the fair.

Ride the Energy Explorers’ bike to learn about energy use and conservation. Interact with the PEA Stream Table and learn why Every Drop Counts. Check out the Live Debate tent to hear high school students from across the Piedmont discuss the pros and cons of eating meat.

“PEA’s education programs engage more than 3,500 students annually, teaching vital lessons in math and science, and nurturing the next generation of citizen environmentalists. We’re thrilled to feature these programs at the Earth Day Fair,” confirmed Piedmont Environmental Alliance Education Program Coordinator Nicole Stebbins.

With more than 100 earth-friendly vendors and exhibitors, fun and interactive programs for kids and adults, live music, delicious food, local artwork, the Piedmont Earth Day Fair has something for everyone.

Saturday, February 3rd, more than 500 guests gathered at the Historic Graylyn Estate for the Winterlark gala. The 35th-annual event was the most successful year yet, thanks to scores of volunteers, individual patrons, and dedicated corporate partners, like Presenting Sponsor First Tennessee.

The proceeds for Winterlark benefit Wake Forest Baptist Health Cancer Patient Support Program CPSP . This program offers patients, families and caregivers the tools they need to gain strength and overcome the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis.

The Chairpersons for this year’s event were anie and Ken Budd of Advance. anie says, Ken and I were honored to serve as this year’s Chairs of Winterlark. Working with the Office of Philanthropy at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and more than 100 community volunteers made the planning process run like a well-oiled machine. We’re proud to see all this hard work celebrated in such a beautiful way at Winterlark. More importantly, we’re overjoyed that this tremendous community effort will once again benefit so many people dealing with cancer.

A delicious dinner buffet and an assortment of cocktails and other beverages were provided by Graylyn. A silent and a spirited live auction, which included the ever-popular pound cakes baked weekly for the CPSP by volunteer Hermine Heller, capped off the evening, raising even more dollars for patients and families.

By listening carefully and responding thoughtfully, we provide patient-and family-centered care, and seek to remove suffering and replace it with grace, said Richard P. Mc uellon, PhD, HSP-P Director, Cancer Patient Support Program, at the conclusion of the night’s festivities, as he thanked the attendees for their contributions.

The Importance of Regular Oral Cancer Screenings

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and

though many people think of cancer as something they never want to face, when it comes to oral health, there is so much benefit to early detection in regard to treatment.

Regular screening is simple and painless, so there is no excuse not to get checked.

“The North Carolina Dental Hygienists’ Association (NCDHA) was created in 1948 in an effort to have a voice in the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) at the state level and to be an advocate for all licensed dental hygienists in North Carolina, the dental hygiene profession and to educate the public of the importance of good oral hygiene and the role of dental hygienists,” said members of the Forsyth County component of NCDHA, led by President Beth Huff.

“We offer continuing education courses to local dental hygienists within our component and are involved in community service projects in an effort to improve the oral health of all individuals, as well as to bring awareness to dental disease and prevention. Community projects include providing free dental services to families in our area, providing scholarships to dental hygiene students at Forsyth Technical Community College, donating dental hygiene supplies to local agencies, such as Elke’s Angels, Hospice Home, local women’s and children’s shelters/ centers, and we have donated our time and skills at the Winston-Salem Community Care Clinic. Our component consists of licensed dental hygienists in Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Surry, Stokes and Yadkin counties. We are licensed, highly educated and dedicated oral health care providers and educators [who] work closely with dentists to improve and protect the oral health of NC residents.”

Dental Hygienists recommend becoming familiar with the way your mouth looks, so you will be able to notice any changes that may occur.

Similar to self-breast exams, checking monthly on our own can bridge the gap between regular visits to our healthcare professionals; however, this should not replace regular office visits. “Evaluate the areas outside of your mouth by using your hands to massage all areas of the neck and cheeks to feel for any lumps, bumps or any sore areas,” the members advised. “When looking inside your mouth, lift your tongue up to the roof of your mouth to look under your tongue and move your tongue to the left and right to look at each side of the tongue. You can also look in the mirror and say ‘aaah’ to look at the back of your throat. Remember to look at your cheeks and feel for anything unusual, and also the inside of your lips. All of these areas are hiding places for early oral cancer

lesions to appear. It is also recommended to have at least an annual oral cancer screening by your oral health care professional (dentist and dental hygienist)—especially sexually active teens. However, we encourage [all] readers to have biannual check ups with their dentist and dental hygienist and ask for an oral cancer screening!” Difficulty swallowing can be an indicator of oral cancer, so it is important to get it checked out by your dentist or dental hygienist.

Routine oral care is also necessary to improve and maintain our overall oral health. “All of us should be brushing our teeth at least twice per day and flossing once per day, but the more we can do these things, the better our oral health will be, as well as our general health,” reiterated the members. “Using an electric toothbrush is recommended over a traditional brush, as they are more effective at removing plaque and food debris. Daily use of a good, germ-killing mouthwash is also recommended.”

While most people are aware that tobacco use greatly increases your risk of oral cancer, there are other behaviors that can have a negative impact, as well. “Risk factors for oral cancer include excessive tobacco and alcohol use,” said the members. “However, now one of the most common risk factors is an exposure to the HPV-16 virus (Human Papilloma Virus) and other STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Some scary statistics include the approximately 136 people who will be diagnosed with oral cancer each day in 2018! That is approximately 50,000 people!

Of those 50,000, only slightly more than half will be alive in five years. One person dies every hour of every day from oral cancer. If diagnosed early, there is an 80–90% survival rate. However, diagnosing lesions early can be difficult, as early lesions may be missed or overlooked due to a lack of symptoms, such as pain or difference in appearance.”

In honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, The Forsyth Dental Hygienists’ Association will be offering free oral cancer screenings for adults on Saturday, April 14th from 10am–1pm. This event will be held at the CVS pharmacy located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Statistics show that nearly 10,000 people will die from oral cancer in 2018. Calvert-Hayes has fond memories of visiting Winton-Salem, NC as a little girl. “My dad was a buyer for R.J. Reynolds, traveling from market to market, so I pretty much grew up sitting on a bale of tobacco. We’d travel as a family to Winston-Salem when he had a meeting.

Many years later, when I was a divorced, single mom of three, wanting a new start, I came to Winston- Salem,” said Lida. That new start brought more than she could have ever imagined.

A NEW BEGINNING After settling in Winston-Salem, Lida, with her three little ones in tow, began working as a substitute teacher in local schools, but as the sole support for her family, Lida founded S&L Painting in 1986. “I decided that I wanted to get involved in local construction, and I felt that painting and decorating were the areas for me. My employees had pasts that kept them from being hired by other companies, but I have always been about the importance of second chances in life and those employees were the most loyal people I have ever met. They just needed someone to believe in them,” said Lida. It was her belief in second chances, giving everyone an equal opportunity and being a mother that set the stage for Lida’s involvement with the Forsyth County School Board.

Almost three and a half years ago, Lida was appointed to the school board when long-time board member, Jeannie Metcalf stepped down. Since then, Lida has used her business acumen and her love and passion for all children to be an advocate for public education.

A TRUE CALLING Before Lida married her husband of 31 years, David Hayes, being a single mom of three was a full-time job in addition to her full-time job of business owner.

She knew the stresses of raising children, keeping them focused on their education and running a successful business, so she came to her role on the school board with a few perspectives.

“I truly believe that every child deserves an equal education, the best and finest that we can give them; they’re our future,” said Lida. “Children and teachers also deserve to learn and educate in a safe environment.

Teaching is the hardest job in the world, and teachers deserve more pay for the work they do and the lives they touch and change daily. I have met many students, teachers and parents and take…their concerns to heart. I believe you have to be out in our schools to know what needs there are and how best to address them.

I also believe that in building and maintaining our schools with taxpayer monies, as a board, we need to be good stewards and make sure we use those funds to the best of our ability. My business experience has allowed me to make a difference as the chairperson of building and grounds.”

Because of Lida’s business experience, specifically in the construction field, she was an integral part of the team that worked to pass the $350,000,000 school bond. This bond enabled the building of two new schools and allowed for much needed maintenance and repairs to other schools. It also provided the funding for major upgrades to computer systems and addressed traffic problems at a number of schools in the county. But,

it wasn’t just about getting the funds to build and upgrade schools, Lida also implemented policies to get the most qualified contractors working for the schools. “In the past, there weren’t any pre-qualifications done before hiring contractors or subs. Basically, the lowest bidder won, no matter the experience.

With my experience in construction and as a contractor, I know what is needed from the ground up; I could read architectural plans, knowing what it would take to make the best decisions with the funds we had,” said Lida.

A huge part of the fun of these weekends is the chance to see the newest construction and décor trends. June DeLugas of June DeLugas Interiors is the Parade of Homes’ trend expert, and her keen insight gives us lots to look forward to! “More and more we are seeing trends towards farmhouse styles,” says June. “We have two homes already underway this year that we are helping with, and one is actually integrating old remnants from their family farm.”

June explains how interesting it is to see the differences in what people really feel is farmhouse style. “We have worked on several farmhouses over the past two years. One was a true period home, where the clients used old Pennsylvania-style stone and tile, while another was an 1850s renovated farmhouse that we helped remodel completely, with a new kitchen, master bath, light fixtures, and paint,” she tells, adding that past color trends are evolving.

“What the design world tells you and what people do are two different things,” she says. “Gray is moving towards taupe, and all shades of blue—including teal—are outweighing other colors.” It’s true that ultraviolet is the Pantone color of the year, but Caliente red is the color of the year for Benjamin Moore, and Oceanside teal for Sherwin Williams.

Rob Powell adds that more new homes are being designed with siding in wood or fiber cement, as opposed to brick, and the variation is refreshing. “We’re seeing nickel-gap boards installed as a wainscot or accent wall, new wood made to look like old barn wood, sliding barn doors, and aluminum clad windows in various colors.”

Leigh Ann Raines, president of Chic By Design, is also working on featured homes in the Parade. A North Carolina native, Leigh Ann recently moved back home from Los Angeles, where she built her design business around her passion for color. “From a design standpoint, I’m seeing increased interest locally for more modern elements, even in modern farmhouses,” observes Leigh Ann. 2018 Forsyth County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Plant Sale

signs that Spring is right around the corner are everywhere.

Longer days, warmer temperatures, trees budding and flowers starting to wake from their winter sleep lead those of us who love to dig in the dirt to start shopping for plants. What if your plant purchases could also help maintain The Arboretum and Gardens at Tanglewood Park? The Forsyth County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Plant Sale will be April 20th–22nd at Tanglewood Park. Plant selections include unique annuals and herbaceous perennials, as well as flowering shrubs and trees, such as native plants, milkweed, herbs, vegetables and much more! Plus, there will be Master Gardener Volunteers on hand to answer any questions you may have.

In 2001, The North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Forsyth County Center, took over the maintenance of the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park. Originally, the Arboretum was the overlook area where weddings were held, but today there are over 25 gardens maintained by Extension staff and Extension Master Gardener Volunteers. It is a public garden containing a diverse collection of plants. As the Arboretum has expanded over the years, the funds needed to maintain the lush gardens for visitors have, too.

“The funds raised at the Spring Plant Sale are used to support The N.C. Cooperative Extension’s management of the Arboretum, including ongoing maintenance and restoration of the gardens, as well as educational programs, including guest speakers for our lecture series.

Plants, shrubs, trees, soil, fertilizers, and chemicals are just a few of the items required for gardening. Three big projects that funds from the plant sale have helped include a substantial donation toward the beautiful deer fence that was installed a few years ago to protect the gardens from the deer that roam the park, the Adult Education Gardening Sessions that are held each month in the Arboretum office and the Youth Education Program for third graders held each spring.

An Extension Agent has served as Director of the Arboretum since we took over the maintenance of the Arboretum, and we also have a part-time Maintenance Technician dedicated to the Arboretum. We are very fortunate that Extension Master Gardener Volunteers donate over 400 hours of their time each year to care for the gardens,” said Teresa Lowry, Extension Master Gardener Volunteer.

The plant sale provides a large selection of plants, many that have been dug, divided, potted, and shared from Master Gardener Volunteers’ gardens, and some that are shared from gardens in the Arboretum, including many natives from the Wildflower Garden. The Greenhouse purchases seeds and small plants to grow its annuals, herbs, and vegetables. Approximately 50 different plant species in different varieties and colors will be offered.

“The Nursery will have approximately 175 different varieties of perennials, shrubs and trees for sale along with the plants from the Greenhouse. The native plants tend to sell out quickly,” Teresa stated. Along with the many plants that will be for sale, volunteers donate “gently used” gardening and lawn care items that they no longer use.

Past sale items have included books, pots, vases, tools, compost bins, baskets, and numerous other items.

The sale is considered by many to be one of the premier plant sales in the country, growing each year, with customers making it a success. “We encourage everyone to shop early for the best selection, since the past several years have provided a long line of customers prior to the sale’s opening at 8 am. On the days of the sale, we make every effort to staff the nursery and the greenhouse with our Master Gardener Volunteers. If a question is asked and we do not know the answer, we take the person’s name and phone number and will follow up with them after consulting the Extension Agent. Our Master Gardener Volunteers have completed 40 hours of training and 40 hours of volunteering during their first year. Our program provides participants with 40 hours of in-depth training in the art and science of horticulture. In return for their training, they volunteer their time and expertise in support of many community programs and activities,” commented Teresa.

A nice surprise for morning commuters as they head out to work is the Breakfast-onthe-Go that the management staff offers on occasion. The management team is gate-side by 6:00 am to give out chicken biscuits and bottled water to residents as they head off to work.

CHAMBERLAIN PETS: Chamberlain Place is a pet-friendly community (basic pet guidelines are provided on the website for reference).

Dogs have their own place to play and conduct their version of “meet and greet.” The area is fenced with pet “waste stations” set-up for convenience and to keep the pet park nice for all residents.

CHAMBERLAIN RESIDENT ACTIVITIES: The management staff hosts a Thanksgiving luncheon on-site. Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal with your neighbors. Besides good food and fellowship, you don’t have to cook or clean up afterward a win-win. T. J. shared that last year they had over 50 residents enjoy Thanksgiving together.

Sunday, March 11, 2018, the CBS show 60 Minutes aired an important segment on childhood trauma and resilience. The story was the brain child of Oprah Winfrey, who said, “Trauma leaves a hole in the soul, and unless you fix the trauma that has caused people to be the way they are, you’re working on the wrong thing.” In reaction to traumatic occurrences – an everincreasing tragedy in the American fabric – we ask, “What’s wrong with that child?” Winfrey says this is the wrong question. We must ask instead, “What happened to that child?”

Over the past three years, Family Services has added five trauma therapists to its traditional counseling program. These professionals have participated in a year-long, intensive training program to become certified in providing trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, an evidence-based treatment model designed to assist children, adolescents, and their families in overcoming the negative effects of a traumatic experience. Similarly, the agency’s Child Advocacy Center provides “trauma-informed” services to child victims who have experienced or witnessed family violence. In a child-friendly, safe environment a certified forensic interviewer conducts one vital interview, which reduces the need for a child victim to retell the traumatic experience over and over to the police, a judge, a nurse, and others.

Behavioral health professionals like those at Family Services start with this question as they recognize and treat a variety of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs , that when compounded as multiple traumas in childhood can carry damaging effects, not only during childhood, but into adult life as well.

However, the best way to deal with Adverse Childhood Experiences is to prevent them in the first place.

ACEs include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, a mother treated violently, substance abuse within the household, household mental illness, parental separation or divorce, and an incarcerated household member. It is not unusual for anyone to have experienced one or even two of these occurrences during childhood. Children can live under such circumstances and still grow up to be healthy, functional, and productive adults. But when a child experiences three, four, five or more, the likelihood of negative consequences increases. When left untreated they are at greater risk of developing serious health, social, and behavioral problems. This is especially significant in the first five years of life, a once-only window of opportunity when brain architecture is rapidly developing.

To that end, Family Services supports parents, educators, and the community at large in creating Advantageous Childhood Environments. This includes making sure parents have the support, resources, and skills they need to maintain a stable family life. It also involves the work of human services agencies that assist families in meeting their basic needs for food, clothing, and housing.

It entails making behavioral health services available to children, provided by clinicians who are trained to do traumafocused therapy. It means providing families with quality early childhood development programs that promote healthy brain development during the earliest years of life. Most of all it depends on the community’s commitment to make the health and well-being of all its children its highest priority.

The future prosperity of a community depends on how it raises ALL of its children. Family Services is among the many organizations and individuals in Forsyth County working to ensure that families have access to an advantageous community environment, flush with resources and opportunities for its youngest children. Just Serve with “

Martin Luther King, Jr. said,

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’

”

I can attest to this. Some days, when I’m mindlessly bingeing on some show that I’ve gotten hooked on and getting that “too-muchT -headache,” these lines I learned from a song in my childhood pop into my head: “Have I done any good in the world today? Have I helped anyone in need?” When my answer is “No,” I turn my focus to others for a while and search for ways to do my part to make the world a better place.

The funny thing is, I always feel better after I have done something to help someone else—even when it is really hard and I get super hot and sweaty and break a nail and no one else cares.

I recently read, service is trending. I can get behind that. I’m glad schools are getting in on the trend. My children have had service field trips and concerts and a class that required community service hours.

One of my daughters with a love for animals signed up to serve at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter and loved it. The most surprising service was when my teenage son went to help a large group of Girl Scouts on an overnight event at SciWorks of Winston-Salem (now Kaleideum North). When I picked him up at the end of his shift, just before the “no boys allowed” rule took effect, I grilled him about how it had gone. He told me he had helped them make paper out of wood. “It was pretty fun,” he laughed. “Kind of cool.” High praise for a 15-year-old boy. I was so glad to see serving made him feel good.

That’s what service does for us. When I was a kid, I had a quote from Rabindranath Tagore on my bedroom wall. “I slept and dreamt that life

was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” I am always grateful when my family can serve others and experience that joy. I’ve seen my kids become stronger and more compassionate through their service, but at times it has been a challenge to find service opportunities for them as well as myself.

I’ve discovered a new tool that helps eliminate that problem. It is called JustServe. It connects people looking for community service options with non-profit service groups. People can sign up for causes they identify with and things they are capable of doing. For example, building houses for Habitat for Humanity is way out of my skill set, but, since I recently had a close friend go through breast cancer and know my way around an office, “Administrative Assistant” at Susan G. Komen of NW, NC would be a comfortable fit.

I feel very strongly about how much our community needs this kind of tool and have joined the committee that is identifying service opportunities in our area to include on www.JustServe.org and on the JustServe app.

On Saturday, April 21st, from 10am 2pm, there will be a JustServe Community olunteer Fair at The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints building, located at 4260 Clinard Road in Clemmons, NC. Everyone is invited.

This is a unique opportunity to connect with representatives from a variety of non-profit organizations in our area. You’ll have a chance to learn about different service opportunities and volunteer needs in our community, and helpers will be available to help attendees register on JustServe, so they can start volunteering right away.

Wondering what summer camp

should look like for your child? Over the past few years, visions of bunk-lined cabins nestled in the woods, canoe paddles dipping in rippling waters and marshmallows melting on sticks by the campfire have morphed a bit. Sailboats bobbing in a bay, jet skis skidding through wavy lakes and swords thrashing about in duel have also become a part of the picture.

Does that mean the days of camp lore have moved behind us? No, not in the least! Your child can still enjoy the iconic wilderness experience. However, options abound if they have something a little different in mind. Choices have exploded over the years. Literally. At University of Missouri’s Explosives Camp, you can learn how to blow things up. Wow. Fortunately, there are some less volatile options, as well. To help you get an idea of the different types of camps, we’ve broken them down into basic categories with descriptions, and created a list within each to help you narrow down which camp may be the most appropriate for your child.

WILDERNESS/ADVENTURE CAMPS These are pretty traditional and don’t really need an introduction. However, there may be an option that you haven’t considered. If you’re feeling nostalgic about the camp experience, or, if you think your child may not be ready to be on their own for summer camp, consider a new trend family camp. The concept is the same: cabins (At Camp Cheley, Colorado, you get to sleep in a covered wagon!), daily activities, communal dining and campfire circles. In a way, it’s a bit like an all-inclusive family vacation without the fancy service.

SPORTS CAMPS Athletic camps are often hosted for a few hours each day and typically run by recreation centers, coaches or high schools. However, overnight stays are also available and often located on college campuses. A few companies provide sports camps as well. For example, Nike has basketball camps in the Charlotte area, golf camps at Tanglewood and a baseball camp at Guilford College.

ARTS-BASED CAMPS These types of camps encompass music, drama and drawing. Some great local options include theater camps where your children will practice and then perform a play for the camp’s conclusion, Design Camp at NCSU, and Art Through Improv at SECCA. If you have an aspiring composer, Camp Jam has locations across the U.S. Campers can play in a band, write songs, make music videos and perform in a concert.

PASSION CAMPS Often focusing on a skill or career, these types of camps encourage your child to discover more about something they enjoy and can also help them determine if it is a passion they wish to pursue.

A few of the more exciting activities to consider: digging up dinosaur bones in Colorado, sailing sunfish along the Outer Banks, training to be a spy at Lake Como, choreographing a fight scene at stunt camp, soaring on trapezes at circus camp and swimming with stingrays at Sea World’s marine biology camp.

ACADEMIC CAMPS Usually hosted on a college campus, academic camps are fantastic for kids who simply love to learn. Campers typically sleep in dorms, dine in the college cafeteria and use actual university facilities for their classes. Local academic institutions host day camps, as well, such as Camp Med or Camp Cardiac at WFU. A sample curriculum from Ferrum College’s overnight camp in Virginia includes Crime Scene Investigation, Hogwarts Academy and Living 1800s-style, along with more traditional options such as theater, drawing and writing. Students can cap off the week with a little ziplining and rappelling if they are feeling adventurous!

With all of these new ideas, you may now be facing the problem of which one to choose! First, figure out which camps fit your child’s personality and age range the best. Second, narrow them down by cost and or proximity.

And, finally, a good ole “pros and cons” list usually finishes off the task.

AlphaBEST Brings Summer Camp Fun to Forsyth County AlphaBEST Education provides before and after school

programming to five Forsyth County elementary schools throughout the school year, but this year – for the first time here in our county – they’ll also be offering a full-day, multi-week Summer Camp. Activities will differ from week to week, so children can participate in a single week, just a handful of weeks, or can be part of the fun all summer long!

“We provide AlphaBEST Summer Camp in many of our other school districts across the country, and we’re thrilled to finally be able to bring it here to Forsyth County, too,” said Crystal Smith, AlphaBEST’s North Carolina Area Manager. “We hope it can be a way for us to serve many of our existing Forsyth families, but also to introduce other children to what AlphaBEST is all about, since camp will be open to all Forsyth elementary students – not just those at our five AlphaBEST schools.”

The camp, which will run June 12 through August 24, will be held at the Old Clemmons Gym (6031 Stadium Drive in Clemmons) and will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, offering a great option for working families during the summer months. AlphaBEST’s goal is always to provide working parents with a safe, affordable care option, and students with an enriching, fun experience. As with all AlphaBEST programming, children will be learning skills and gain exposure to current, exciting, in-demand subjects and will have a blast in the process!

This year’s AlphaBEST Summer Camp theme is “AlphaQUEST,” an exciting, adventure-filled summer that will engage children’s imagination and creativity.

Participating children will join the AlphaSQUAD as they experiment with robots, investigate chemical reactions, get active playing sports and fitness games, create short videos, and engineer contraptions both imagined and real. Each week, the AlphaSQUAD will explore imaginary worlds through crafts, science, technology, fitness, and drama. They’ll build a room inside a hot volcano, create slime samples from an imaginary labyrinth of caves filled with all sorts of silly stuff, build a rocket to visit a personalized planet, and so much more.

“This isn’t your average Summer Camp,” said Laura Cole, Curriculum Coordinator at AlphaBEST who has helped to develop the content for this year’s camp. “AlphaBEST Summer Camp brings hands-on, high energy, summer-long fun that seamlessly incorporates learning. The students who attend our camp are sharpening their skills in technology and engineering, they’re using creativity daily, and they’re improving on team building skills by working together to solve problems and complete tasks.”

With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 34-year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers of every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

SPINNING MARVELS

“The greatest artist and web-designer ever is indeed a spider!” ~ Munia Khan FUN SPIDER FACTS:* • Spiders are arachnids, not insects.

• Spiders have eight legs; insects have six.

• Spiders only have two body segments; insects have three.

• Spiders don’t have antennae; insects do.

• There are more than 30,000 different species of spiders found on every continent except the Arctic and Antarctic.

• Most spiders make silk, which they use to create spider webs and capture prey, but some spiders hunt their prey and pounce.

Silk strands in a web are five times stronger than a piece of steel the same size.

• Most spiders live on land, but some live in and on water.

BUILDING AN ORB WEB IN 30 MINUTES, STEP BY STEP:** Release: The spider releases a sticky, silk thread that gets longer and longer as the thread oats through the air. With any luck, the thread will make a landing on a sturdy structure such as a tree branch or window frame.

Radial Lines: With the framework secure, the spider lays out non-stick threads from the center of the web to the outer frame. The spider ensures the radial lines are close enough together to walk across them.

Bridge line: Once the thread is secure, the spider builds a bridge line by pulling and tightening the thin thread between the two anchor points. To reinforce the strength of the bridge line, the spider releases additional threads.

Auxiliary Spiral: Beginning in the center of the web, the spider spins circular non-stick threads in a spiral around the web to the outer edges. This auxiliary spiral holds the radial lines in place and will serve as a guide for the next phase.

“V” line: Just below the bridge line, the spider releases a looser, horizontal thread, forming a . The spider works carefully to secure each end of the sticky thread to the two anchor points.

Sticky Spiral: The spider attaches a sticky thread to the radial lines, working at the auxiliary spiral and eats the non-stick threads as it goes along. As a result, non-stick radial lines allow the spider to walk around and sticky spiral threads catch insects.

“Y” line: After the “v” line is secure, the spider walks to the center of the loose thread and drops down on a long vertical thread, forming a Y . This thread completes the three radial lines of the web structure.

Framework: The spider constructs a framework for the web by adding threads between the original anchor points. The silky threads add reinforcement to the strength of the web structure.

They leave the bridge line in place and recycle the rest of the web by eating the silk and reusing it to build a new web. Cloth Lullaby: The Woven Life of Louise Bourgeois

I’m Trying To Love Spiders

In this biography of French modern artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), Amy Novesky showcases the childhood roots of inspiration of this extraordinary sculptor, nicknamed “Spiderwoman,” and best known for her largescale spider sculptures. The original, 30-foothigh spider sculpture, Maman (“Mommy”) made of bronze, stainless steel, and marble, is one of her most famous pieces. Growing up, Louise’s family restored historic tapestries for a living and it is from memories of her time spent as an apprentice working alongside her nurturing mother (a master weaver) that her choice in sculpture subjects becomes clear. In an interview, Louise said, “I came from a family of repairers. The spider is a repairer. If you bash into the web of a spider, she doesn’t get mad. She weaves and repairs it.” This lyrical text is a “story tapestry” of words woven together with beautiful mixed-media collages by Isabelle Arsenault, which highlight spider web designs, textile patterns, and everything Louise loved most as a child…a cloth lullaby.

Author and illustrator Bethany Barton weaves cartoon illustrations with information about spiders and the emotions of an (unseen) arachnophobe in a way that is playful, imaginative, and fun. This informational picture book is cleverly told in the first person, which heightens a reader’s engagement (regardless of their opinion of spiders); even more so when readers are asked to squash or, perhaps, pet, the spiders with the turning of each page. Along the journey toward “trying to love spiders,” the reader learns a host of intriguing facts, some a bit gross—like the way spiders liquefy their prey, and some quite impressive like how spiders can eat seventy-five pounds of bugs that are harmful to humans in a single year. With the narrator’s hand hovering in preparation to squash a spider, the more she learns about these fascinating creatures, the less likely it is that the spider will become a black splotch on the page. This book is the perfect blend of factual and hilarious!

Extension Activities: Science Exploration and Writing

Artful Expression

Learn more about one of the following remarkable (although perhaps a tad scary) insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, or mammals by doing a little research. Ask your parent to take you to the public library to get a book (or two or three) on your topic of choice and learn all you can. Using Barton’s book as a mentor text, write a non-fiction book about the unique characteristics (creepy, gross, and really cool aspects make for best writing and reading) from your point of view. You may even want to draw a hand, net, or some other catching/squashing device hovering over the words and illustrations on the pages as you try to convince yourself (and your readers) that you are “trying to love” that creature. Report out on what you learned by sharing your finished book.

Louise Bourgeois began her career working in textiles when she was only 12 years old as her mother’s apprentice, repairing worn tapestries. Her mother explained that the different textures and colors of wool were woven together in each tapestry to tell a story. From that point forward, Louise used cloth as a powerful medium to create incredible pieces of art…well into her nineties! She designed and crafted cloth books, cloth drawings, cloth sculptures, and even cloth spiders. Try your hand at following in her footsteps. Ask permission to cut up old clothing items and select pieces to sew together or glue to a piece of tag board to create a tapestry that tells a story. If cloth is not available, cut designs out of different colors of construction paper or wrapping paper to fashion a special tapestry to share with family and friends.

Teaching and Practicing Active Listening Skills

BY LISA S.T. DOSS Distraction plays an important part in how well we are able to focus on conversation. Environmental sounds, the television or radio, distant conversations, our cell phones or even the niggling worry of our own difficulties interfere with our ability to listen. How often do we engage our children in conversation requesting them to stop, stand still and listen?

In frustration, we may say the words, “Are you listening?”

Shutting out noise is often not a viable solution; nor is the act to simply give the other person our full attention. Active listening is truly a skill that can be learned.

establish a welcoming stance, such as smiling as you talk or leaning in closer. You may quickly discover that a listener will unconsciously change her positioning, providing a more comfortable tone to the conversation.

Our Gift of Learning

SUMMARIZING: How often are we given instructions, and our visual processing prohibits the ability to remember the details? One of the easiest methods is to respond by stating, “Let me summarize.” This allows both the speaker and the listener to ensure clear understanding.

We all have a distinct gift in the way we process information and learn. For some, it may be a strength to listen and recall information, and that is termed auditory; while the majority of individuals require visual cues to gain a clear understanding. Active listening enables a person to listen with all senses and give the full attention to the speaker.

Through this skill, we are clearly able to hear what the other person is saying, regardless of whether or not the information becomes uninteresting or dull. And, when we learn how to be engaging, we can also encourage trust and build a deeper rapport with others. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to feel more at ease communicating and understanding?

Here is how to practice the technique of active listening.

AN OPEN MIND: As a listener, open your mind to the new presentation of ideas or a different perspective. Despite the need to argue or present your points and examples without allowing the speaker to finish talking, hold your judgment and criticism. Active listening allows the speaker to present all points before the listener can respond.

BODY LANGUAGE CUES: Take notice of the listener’s posture. Is she sitting stiff and rigid? Is her body pulled away, sending a clear message of distance? The tone of voice may be a result of the lack of eye contact. For shy or uncomfortable speakers, consider combining eye contact with non-verbal messages. ASK QUESTIONS: A true test of active listening is to engage the listener by showing interest or asking questions, especially when an issue is unclear. Open ended or clarifying questions allows a listener to expand their thoughts while considering a more thoughtful and concise response.

AUDIO BOOKS: Mention the words, “audio books” and the response is, “I do not enjoy listening to a book. I prefer reading.” This is one of the greatest skills to alter your gift as a visual learner and become an auditory listener. Young children can greatly benefit as listeners just by listening to books, at least one to two years above their reading level.

Remember, listening, when your skill is not strong, can only help you develop active listening. Begin with books you know well and love. The visual or tactile learner will be able to envision the scenes, helping in the process of intently listening. Lost in translation, just go back a few minutes or to the start of the chapter. With practice, active listening will become a preferred means to learn, especially if you need an activity while driving, walking the dogs or performing household tasks!

Weaknesses can become strengths with practice and the willingness to engage in active listening. As an individual with different strengths, you will discover not all techniques work the same; yet, we can try something new such as paying attention to the speaker’s body language or asking questions and summarizing a list of instructions of information. Listening is a vital skill. Why not make it a priority to become an active listener?

The Professional Athletic Mindset

eventy-five percent of American families have at least one school-aged child participating in an organized sport. On the surface, it may appear today’s youth have disengaged from a sedentary lifestyle, and are happily balancing physical exercise with fun! The following statistics send a more powerful message: • 2.6 million youth ranging in age from 5 to 24 are visiting the emergency room for sports-related injuries. By the time children reach the age of 15, the attrition rate increases by 80%.

• 67% of injuries occur during practice sessions.

Sprains and muscle strains, bone or growth-plate or repetitive-motion injuries, and heat-related illness are the most common types of sports-related injuries amongchildren.

• 80% of children are no longer engaged in sports by the age of 13.

• 10% of high school athletes play at a college level, and only 1% receive an athletic scholarship.

• The odds of becoming a professional athlete are: 1 in 4,233 (football), 1 in 7,771 (men’s basketball), and 1 in 13,015 (women’s basketball) • 59% of elite athletes are inspired by their parents to begin playing one sport, while 28% stated they were inspired to practice by friends.

Stress Levels in Children The days of seeing neighborhood children playing hockey in the cul-de-sac, or spending hours riding bicycles have been replaced by the rise of two distinct categories: those who either sit indoors playing video games or participate in organized competitive sports. With an epidemic of two out of three children labeled as obese, the other end of the spectrum identifies children as young as six treated as rising professional athletes. It begins with a mindset that believes practicing one sport throughout the year will ensure stardom. This drive comes with a price. Young athletes who are pushed to play on multiple teams and endure an intense training schedule have resulted in a claim of burnout not for one sport, but all sports, by the age of 13.

Injuries Lasting a Lifetime The desire for fun and comradery within a team has longlasting implications for adults, who spend their childhood

inflicted with numerous sports injuries. A body still in developing stages is not strong enough to handle overuse.

The risk for fractures throughout the bone and growth plate increases with each injury. By minimizing the need for rest and rehabilitation, teenagers are enduring injuries and chronic pains usually diagnosed for adults.

Words from a Coach In the hope of sharing her perspective, a coach has offered her viewpoint by writing, “The typical kid who walks through my door on the first day isn’t as athletic as he used to be. Basic movement skills have been skipped over, and injury histories are more extensive. The athletes are a bit ‘desensitized’ to the overall training process. They view everything as just another game or practice; so, the value of each training exposure is a bit less. I feel we need to change our attitudes toward them and behavior surrounding them—and most importantly, how we interact with our kids concerning their athletic careers. When parents are not watching, kids begin to let their guards down, make new friends, and try things they otherwise wouldn’t attempt. This is a big part of both physical and social development. Sports are a great way to teach kids to ‘roll’ with different social circles, and it’s important for them to get this experience on their own.”

A New Pathway While we cannot change the requirement for athletic achievement with healthy and happy kids, there is one direction parents can model on the field or in the gym. It requires the focus to be on the enjoyment of the game and practicing positive and supportive behavior. With 80% of children leaving all sports by the age of 13, there is, sadly, room to reach for the stars by creating a personal definition of athletic achievement.

Dining Etiquette for Kids:

Hello!

My name is Rosey, and I’m the restaurant reviewer for our sister magazine, Forsyth Woman. After over twelve years of restaurant reviewing, I’ve developed some pretty strong opinions about etiquette in restaurants. The truth is, good manners never go out of style, whether you’re dining at home or in a restaurant. So much of our time as a family is spent around a dining room table, sharing a meal, that the value and importance of table manners cannot be overestimated.

Come to the table with clean faces and hands. Children are notorious for being messy and sticky. But at the dining table— whether at home or in a restaurant—they should understand the importance of arriving for the meal with clean hands and a clean face. It’s understandable that young children, especially, will get food on their hands and face during the meal, but let’s agree to start off with a clean slate.

Napkins go in the lap. Dining 101 tells us that napkins go in our laps; not on our heads. Wiggling children do have a bit of a hard time keeping said napkins on their laps, so emphasis should also be placed on the need to keep a clean napkin, versus using one that keeps dropping on the floor.

Inside voices at the table. We all know children can be loud when they are excited or upset. And when it comes to being at a restaurant or seated at the family dining room table, they should definitely be well acquainted with their inside voices, as well as waiting for someone to stop talking before interrupting.

Elbows off the table. And all other body parts, including feet.

Wait for everyone to be served before you begin eating. It’s easy to say, “Don’t make the kids wait,” but this is a courtesy to your dinner mates. Besides, it’s awkward to be the last one eating when everyone else is finished. And anyone with children knows that you don’t want an idle and bored toddler while you’re 72 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

trying to finish your own meal! Teaching them to wait also helps them pace themselves with others at the table.

Don’t talk with food in your mouth. Encourage children to chew their food thoroughly and swallow before speaking. It’s not just about manners; it also is about safety! We don’t want any choking accidents!

Ask, don’t reach. Children should always ask for someone to hand them what they need, rather than reaching over others to get it. And eating off others’ plates should be discouraged.

Share fries by placing a few on their plate rather than letting them reach over to yours.

No double-dipping. In the event of a shared appetizer, make sure little ones understand that double dipping is a no-no. Even if it’s just the family at the table, teach them this, so they know it’s not acceptable when they are dining with non-family-members.

Our utensils aren’t toys. Another safety matter—knives, forks, and spoons seem innocuous enough, but handled recklessly, they can cause injuries. Make sure your children know that there’s a time and a place to play with wands, swords, and lightsabers.

The dinner table isn’t that time or place.

The floor of a restaurant isn’t a playground. This is perhaps my biggest pet peeve. It’s not only unsanitary, but also a huge safety hazard for servers who are trying to carry trays of hot food and drinks from table to table. Understanding the need to help children stay focused and entertained, keep the entertainment on top of the table, not underneath.

Please, Thank You, and Other Manners. “Please,” “Thank you,” and offering to help clean up are common manners that should be observed. Everyone should pitch in to help take the dirty dishes back to the kitchen.

Due

to a widespread and ongoing media blitz, a movement entitled Me Too has come to the attention of the majority of Americans. The Me Too movement has witnessed an upswing in awareness of sexual harassment and violence in America, especially in the workplace. However, sexual abuse is not only running rampant at work it is also an issue at home.

Nichole Braddock Bromley, the founder of OneVoice, a nonprofit organization working to end child trafficking around the world, came to visit Covenant College a couple of weeks ago.

She came bearing the story of her survival of childhood abuse and her mission to reach out to those still suffering from the impacts of sexual abuse. She told us of a book she wrote called “Hush” and encouraged us to do the opposite. Speaking out will spread awareness, which in turn helps victims gain the courage to confront their pain.

In “Hush’, Nichole reports, “I have found that many people think sexual violence could never touch them or affect anyone close to them. Yet the reality is that sexual abuse takes place everywhere… It occurs where we least expect it.” Ignorance and denial may be the reason people continue to suffer.

Nichole, who was abused by her stepfather, shared a memory of a time when she tried to seek help from a grade school teacher after being showed an educational video on sexual abuse. The teacher brushed aside her silent plea for help, and the violence continued in Nichole’s life.

We must be on the lookout for opportunities such as the one Nichole’s teacher disregarded.

If and when a friend reaches out to us about abuse that has scared his or her life, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to be instrumental in their healing process. We can let the victim know that we believe them, that the abuse was not their fault, and that we are here to talk whenever they need to.

“Sexual abuse is more than an attack on our body;” says Nichole, “it’s an assault on emotions, mind, and spirit.” Because of this, survivors need help from faithful friends and family to rehabilitate. We can be the one to listen to what happened to our friend, believe them, tell them they did not deserve the abuse, and get them help, whether it be from the authorities, a counselor, a pastor, or merely our presence there, supporting them.

If you are a victim of sexual abuse you must know that you are not alone. “I decided that my situation had to be unique. I shoved the thoughts out of my mind as soon as they came.

I was in denial.” Nichole also suffered from the idea that she was the only one struggling in this way; she did not want to face the shame and the pain that she felt would come with speaking out. However, surveys insist that sexual harassment is not infrequent.

The National Center for Victims of Crime estimated that one in every three girls and one every six boys are sexually abused by the time they turn 18. These numbers are staggering, and now that victims are aware that they are not alone they have been breaking the silence and taking the first step toward healing by saying “Me Too.”

For middle and high school students, reflection can be a written or verbal process which asks the questions, “How well did I manage my time?” and “What strategies worked for me?” This is the time to consider how time management and organization were factors in achieving success. TAKING CHANCES

On

Sunday, February 4th, 2018, the Philadelphia Eagles were playing the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 52. The Patriots were a favorite to win their third Super Bowl in four years. The Eagles, on the other hand, were playing with a backup quarterback who took over for the injured starter near the end of the season and was having a good run through the playoffs. With just 38 seconds left before halftime and the score Eagles 15, Patriots 12, Eagles Coach Doug Pederson, who had been coaching high school football just nine years earlier, decided, on fourth and goal from the one, to go for a touchdown as opposed to a field goal. A field goal was almost a certainty; a touchdown was not. It was a huge gamble this early in the game with the score tight and every point crucial. If they failed in their attempt, they gave New England the momentum, versus a field goal which would put the Eagles ahead by two scores and get the momentum clearly in their favor.

The play was called. It was a trick play, where the ball was snapped to running back Corey Clement, and he ran left on a reverse, handing off to tight end Trey Burton, all the while backup quarterback Nick Foles faded out to the right towards the end zone.

Burton made the pass, and Foles caught it for a touchdown.

Eagles go ahead 22 to 12 going into halftime. To say it was a gutsy play would be a huge understatement. It very well could have decided the game early on.

Fast forward to the end of the game and the Eagles win by eight points 41–33. As it turned out, the point differential (decision to go for seven over the field goal didn’t have an impact on the outcome, at least not on the scoreboard.

One would think, however, that the gutsy decision did have a tremendous impact on the players’ emotions, derived from the confidence their coach had in them. Perhaps it was enough to propel them to win the biggest game of their careers. Because Coach took the gamble and they succeeded, he gave the city of Philadelphia their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

Coach Pederson took a chance, one that hardly anyone in the stadium would agree with, including his own fans. It was

a decision that could have haunted him, if unsuccessful, for the rest of his career, if it led to a loss in the Super Bowl.

What made him do it? What made him take that chance?

Why didn’t he just take the safe road—everyone knows, missed extra points, missed opportunities, they all come back in the end to hurt you. You never escape this type of mistake in a game of this magnitude. Whatever it was that made him push through, show confidence in himself, his players, and his team, it worked…this time.

As a parent, we’re always watching over our children, no matter how old they get. We try to guide them in the right direction, steer them away from obstacles and rough spots in the road, teach them to play it safe. It’s not often we encourage our children to take chances, especially those that may be long shots at best. Admittedly, the safe route is just that… safe, with less turbulence, less stress, fewer problems to deal with. But sometimes in life, you just have to take a chance in whatever unique situation you might be facing. Like Coach Pederson, it could be a decision that creates a crossroad in your life, a decision that results in something you could live to celebrate or regret.

Nevertheless, not taking the chance could end up being the biggest mistake of all.

Life gives us opportunities, sometimes at the most inopportune time. We’re unsure of ourselves, our abilities, our life circumstances, how it might affect our family, our career, our relationship. Most often we don’t take that chance; we kick the field goal instead. But on the rare occasion when we take that leap of faith, and we go out on a limb, when all logic says to do otherwise, the result can be amazing! Playing it safe is often wise in a lot of circumstances, but a life without taking at least some chances is a life not lived to the fullest.

Coach Pederson of the Eagles decided to take a chance, on his team, on himself, and in the end, he gained the honor of lifetime.

you need information or you want to learn about something, or there is a mystery to solve, asking questions is very important. “Mom, why can’t I watch that movie?” “Dad, when will you let me get a drone?” “Hey! Who ate the last piece of cake?”

A detective or a reporter is always looking for answers: Who? What? When? Where?

Why? How? As you learn more about God and the Bible, you should ask questions, too.

Let’s try it! Here’s a short verse from 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

You could ask: “What is prayer?” You might say, “Praying is talking to God.” Or “Praying is when you listen to God.” Can you think of any other answers?

The Bible is full of amazing stories that might make us ask lots of questions. How could God make the whole world in just seven days? What was Peter thinking when he stepped out of the boat onto the stormy waters? Where is heaven and who lives there?

Some things seem like a puzzle, and that’s okay, too. Being a Christian or going to Sunday School doesn’t mean that everything is figured out and easy to understand. The Bible says that our lives are guided by what we believe, not by what we see with our eyes (2 Corinthians 5:7). There are times when we just have to say, “Lord, I don’t get it, but I believe you. I’ll keep asking questions. I’ll keep looking and listening for what you have to say.”

The next time you hear or read a Bible story, you can ask questions like the ones below.

Now try these questions about praying:

When did this happen?

Who can pray?

Who was there?

When do we pray?

Why is this story in the Bible?

Where can we pray?

What does this story teach me about God?

Why do we pray?

Life is full of mysteries and surprises, but God knows all about it. Remember: Never stop learning. Keep asking questions. Never stop praying.

When

my kids were little, I used to buy their shoes ½ size too big. I knew their feet were going to grow, so I bought their shoes a little big, in order for them to last longer. Once you are an adult, you don’t have to worry about that anymore, outside of some weird things that may happen during pregnancy, our feet pretty much stay the same size.

Even though, physically, we may stop growing, spiritually we should be in a constant state of growth. I promise you, we’ll never get so far in our walk with Christ that we have nowhere left to go. We’re never going to “figure it all out.”

We will continue to peel off layer after layer of revelation until God finally brings us home. Even then, I think we still will have room to grow!

In the late Rev. Billy Graham’s book, Nearing Home, he revealed that as his health began to decline and he was not able to leave home and attend church on a regular basis, he found a televised church service that ministered to his heart. Eventually, he called the minister of that church and invited him to his home. That one visit with Dr. Don Wilton from First Baptist Church in Spartanburg turned into a weekly meeting. According to Rev. Graham, they would have lunch together and discuss everything from family to world events. But, he said, the most meaningful part of their visits was when they looked into the Scriptures together and spent time in prayer.

I was so humbled reading this. This is a man who delivered the message of the Gospel face-to-face to more people than anyone else in history, yet he was still in relentless pursuit of God! Well into his 90s, Billy Graham was still buying his “spiritual shoes” a little too big, realizing that there was still room to grow.

April Fool’s Since

the 1500s, April First has been celebrated as April Fool’s Day when jokes, pranks and hoaxes are played on the unsuspecting. Victims who fall for them are called April Fools.

But the truth is, the first day of April belongs to God. April first is especially important this year because April First is Easter Sunday. Through Jesus Christ, men who were once fools and sinners were redeemed by the shedding of his blood on this day more than two thousand years ago.

God gathers those who are thought of as fools in the world’s eyes and He makes them wise.

Those who stand boldly for Christ are targets for derision, especially your pastor, because he is on the front line of fighting the foolishness of this world. Pray today for co-workers for your pastor as he takes on such an important and challenging task.

Lessons from a Kite

I always wanted to fly a kite. Thanks to the expectations established by Mary Poppins, I thought it seemed a wonderful experience. However, I remember being sorely disappointed when I tried it myself. Michael Banks made it look much easier.

Since April is National Kite Flying Month, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on how much a simple kite can teach us about our spiritual walk. Mind you, I’m not going to even pretend to understand all the technicalities of kite flying (apparently, there are a lot . But instead, I want to focus on two points: the air and the tethering string.

The Air We take air for granted. Yet it’s always there. Giving us oxygen we need for life, and it’s a constant presence no matter where we are. Just as it’s impossible for us to live without air, so is it impossible for us to live without God. Philippians 4:13 says, “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” And Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.

They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”

Isn’t it comforting to know that we have a God who can hold us up? Who is empowering us throughout every challenge? We may not see the air, but just as it is a constant presence, so is our Heavenly Father. He’s empowered us through His Spirit, and through Him we can trust Him to help us in every situation.

The Tethering String The momentum and wind that lift a kite are irrelevant without that tethering string. Without it, all you have is a colorful frame of fabric that is blown away by the wind.

To whom are you tethered?

We can try to tie ourselves to other people or things, and maybe they’ll help us fly for a while. But they will never have the endurance to keep us flying, especially when the wind picks up and grows fierce.

They will lose control of the kite, and we will come crashing down. End of story.

But when we tether ourselves to Jesus, the Holy Spirit will guide us. He will allow us to soar, and if we start to wobble, He will reel us back in to protect us from trouble.

And He is strong enough to hold us through any strong breeze—even hurricane-force winds. When we let the Holy Spirit be our tether, He can do great and beautiful things with our lives.

Psalm 139:7-10 says, “I can never escape from your Spirit!

I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.”

Isn’t that a beautiful truth?

How does that encourage your heart? When the winds of life toss us about, and it feels like we’re going to be destroyed by the turbulence, we only need to remember that tethering string. It cannot be broken. It cannot be cut. Once we are saved and tethered to the Holy Spirit, we cannot be undone.

We can also trust He will lift us up and enable us to soar.

PSALM 121 I’ve

always said I was privileged to be called into vocational ministry in serving God’s Kingdom, Church and World. Some weeks, I feel the joy of that privilege more than others. This was one of those strange and wonderful, unique weeks in the life of a local church pastor.

I can’t speak for all pastors, but most of us do a little work outside the hour you see us on Sunday mornings. Sometimes our service calls us to visit, counsel, pray, study, teach and comfort. Other times our service calls us to hunt down a plumber when the toilet runs, get quotes for a new church roof, stock the church closet with paper towels and Kleenex, or update the finance records and church website. I never know what each week will hold.

This week, I was blessed with the opportunity to visit and pray with a new life, just entering this world and an old life, preparing to pass onto the next. In the span of seven days, I saw the first and the last days of human life.

At the bedside of both, the words of Psalm 121 flooded my heart and mind. “I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and Earth” (v.1).

The creator of heaven and Earth is our steadfast help in times of trouble and our delight in times of joy. The psalmist promises the Lord will keep us. The Hebrew root word we translate “to keep” was first used in Genesis where Adam was instructed to keep the garden; it means to watch over, to guard, to protect or to take great care over. In this psalm the Lord promises “to keep our life” (v7), our “going out” and “coming in from this time on and forevermore” (v8).

God, most fully revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit is not only our creator but also our keeper and protector. Trouble will surely come our way – simple troubles like sunburns, scratches and wounds will be part of our life just as suffering and struggle from cancer, mental health, world wars, indebtedness and addiction. But, through it all, the Lord remains our keeper.

God is present for our first and last moments in this life.

Those and all the moments in between are held precious in God’s sight. In this season of Easter, as we bask in resurrection life, pause to give thanks to our creator and keeper.

Sharing the Spirit of Our City!

of the area’s most active and inspirational nonprofit groups, the Winston-Salem Ambassadors was founded in December 2016, with a clear mission of binding the past, present, and future, to place – and keep – WinstonSalem in the spotlight it deserves, both locally, regionally, and nationally.

This gathering of determined, spirited, and caring individuals believes that continuing to strive for a strong economy and a thriving community of residents will keep the city at its peak.

Members of the Ambassadors are savvy and intentional, and they can’t wait to share with you why their city is so amazing!

“Our mission is to increase awareness of the greatness of Winston-Salem in two ways,” says Mackenzie CatesAllen, the group’s founder, president, and chief ambassador, who knows that all involved in the organization have experienced firsthand the love of the city’s residents, and the compassion and enlightenment the twin city has to offer all of its residents and neighbors.

The Ambassadors work tirelessly to increase awareness of Winston-Salem’s strengths to those who already live and work here, and to rally excitement and interest for those who aren’t as familiar with the area. Through local events and social media, the Ambassadors regularly spotlight area entrepreneurs, local musical and creative talent, and “everyday heroes” who contribute to the city’s greatness day in and day out.

“The two most important things we promote to all are Winston-Salem being both welcoming and inclusive,”

says Mackenzie. “We truly believe that our city has something for everyone, and we want to help every resident get the most out of their experience in Winston-Salem and the surrounding area.”

Through a series of quarterly “workshops” this energetic group relishes the opportunity to sit down and take part in a wide variety of discussions with an even wider participant base. “We cover what’s good about the city, what areas need work, and potential pathways for the city’s future,” explains Mackenzie.

Heading into a strong second year of work, the group realizes there is much history in Winston-Salem to celebrate, but also much room for growth and many larger goals to accomplish.

Mackenzie leads the Ambassadors, aided and inspired by a wonderful board of advisors who are totally dedicated to the future of WinstonSalem. That board includes its chair, Anne Donovan, vice chair, Amanda Hoey, treasurer, Kristina Welch, and secretary, Christy Spencer.

One of the group’s ongoing campaigns is to keep local college graduates interested in remaining in the area, while also attracting new businesses and as many new employers as possible, and still retain our current workforce and population.

They work to encourage regular visitors to the Triad to take advantage of the city’s booming arts scene and colorful downtown district, and they

hope to inspire other non-profit groups to join in collaborating their efforts, and promote Winston-Salem, not just locally, but also on a regional and national scale.

Mackenzie and her team feel it’s a unique way of “giving back” to their community in a way that will allow the future version of Winston-Salem to flourish!

Playground Etiquette 101 With

spring in the air, I recently took my kids to a local playground. It’s been years since we had an outing like this, yet while I was there, I couldn’t help but remember all the things that would frustrate me as a parent of a young child at the playground. You know…when the big kids show up and sometimes ruin the fun for the little ones. Or when other park parents are oblivious to what their kids are doing. Or when all the swings stayed occupied, no matter how many parents and kids were patiently waiting in line.

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as playground etiquette. Most of these “unwritten rules” are common sense, while some of these so-called rules could be up for debate. No one wants to be a playground cop, but here are some guidelines that have been suggested by friends who frequent parks often….

Know the appropriate age. Sometimes the equipment states the age minimum and maximum. I like to interpret it this way: if your child can climb up or down the slide in a way that’s not meant to be, maybe it’s a sign your child is too old for the playground. Or if you have to climb the equipment with your child, maybe he is too young.

Be mindful of those waiting to play. While you and/or your child are playing, take notice of lines behind you (especially at the slides, swings, rock wall or other equipment), and be willing to step aside after a short while. Please don’t let your child cut in line, and make sure they wait (and see!) that the child ahead on the slide is at the bottom before going down.

Keep an eye on your children, no matter the age. If your child is old enough to play unassisted, then take in the weather, sit back and relax if you can. Or if your child is on the younger side, stay close enough to let them safely try new things without having to squeeze yourself down a slide or into a tiny tunnel. The definitions of “hovering” and “free

range” could be subjective, so my advice would be to take the middle road at public playgrounds.

Don’t be afraid to pull out your phone. A playground is a place for parents to unwind, too! Too often moms criticize other moms for being on their phone at a playground. It’s okay to check your phone while your kids are playing— especially if you’re keeping one eye on the phone and the other on your kids (see rule above!). If you see a mom on her phone, maybe those were the only 30 minutes she had that day to sit and relax while her children played. Maybe she is a single mom who works all day long and never has a moment to catch up on personal e-mail, text messages, or Facebook.

Keep an eye on others’ children. Stuff happens when you least expect it. If you happen to see a child (other than your own) fall down or get hurt or do something potentially dangerous, please offer to help and not let the child suffer alone. A crying child is a crying child, and consoling from any parent is welcomed, at least until Mom and/or Dad arrive.

Be open to sharing. By all means, let your child share his ride on a toy—or sidewalk chalk, or bubbles—with another child who asks (unless you are worried about liability). It’s a good way to teach your kids lessons in sharing. On the flip side, if you see your own child trying to sneak something without asking first or get turned down even if she asked first it’s a good idea to intervene before it gets awkward for that other mom. One thing not to share, please: snacks and drinks!

Be willing to use your gentle, but firm, voice. If my child were not following these rules, I would want another parent to say something (nicely, but firmly . At the end of the day, we are responsible for our own decisions and behaviors. What might seem okay to you and your child, might be considered offensive or risky to someone else. It’s a balancing act, especially in a public setting.

“The girls have known each other since birth, and their love and support of one another is amazing,” Erin says.

At a recent dance competition, the girls achieved some personal “firsts” and “bests”. It was Abbie’s first time performing a solo, and for Reese her first duet. But more significant, the girls lit up the room cheering on their teammates - and each other.

Though this day they danced on separate teams, they cared more about supporting each other as friends than being competitors. They reached for their personal best no matter what the outcome. They were thankful to God for their gifts and the joy of dancing.

And most of all, they shared their winning smiles for all to enjoy.

WHY FAMILIES LOVE THE DASH!

nothing like a summer night at BB&T Ballpark for you and your family. If you’re a Winston-Salem Dash fan, you know the fun of a game, but in case you’ve never been, you need to know what you have been missing!

The Dash is all about families and giving mom, dad and the kids the best time each and every game. Joe Weil, Dash Broadcast and Media Relations Manager, believes this year’s games have so much in store for families, from great games to good food, fireworks, and special events.

“Everyone loves fireworks. Every Friday night, we will have a spectacular fireworks show after the game. Fireworks will also follow our Fourth of July game. After our games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, kids get to run the bases, powered by New Balance Winston-Salem.”

Weil also notes that families have a special day for them with the team’s Family Sundays, sponsored by Lowes Foods, with free popcorn for kids. Meanwhile, a few players will sign autographs before each Sunday home game, and the Kids Zone will now be free Sunday through Wednesday.

The team also has a little excitement to share with fans, too!

The Dash’s new manager this season is three-time MLB AllStar Omar Vizquel. He played for 24 seasons in the Majors and most recently was the first base coach for the Detroit Tigers.

The Dash had 12 out of the top 30 White Sox prospects, per MLB.com, on the team at some point last year, giving fans a great chance to see players who could be on their way to the Majors. This year will likely bring big-name prospects as well, including former Wake Forest University player Gavin Sheets.

The Dash also offers a great place for a birthday party. With group seating available, a picnic terrace and reserved seating for birthday parties of 10 or more, party food, dessert, Dash hats and recognition on the big board at the park, there’s no better place to celebrate than BB&T Ballpark.

On top of that, the Dash will hold three sessions, June 13-15, July 24-27 and August 6-8, of their Youth Baseball Academy.

“This is a great way for kids to get instruction from our coaches and players to improve their own skills. Our Youth Baseball Academy package also includes Dash tickets, a t-shirt, lunch each day and the best baseball instruction you will find,” said Weil.

It’s a GRAND Life

Last

month I wrote about things grandparents could teach their grandchildren. In watching and listening to my grandchildren, I found there are lessons I could learn from them, as well. They are things we all knew at one time or another, but as we matured, some fell by the wayside.

IMAGINATION - I love listening or joining in when my grandkids play.

Whether it is with their abundance of toys or a character they create, they engage in wonderful scenarios that may or may not make total sense to an adult, but work fine for them.

How wonderful to let your mind go in a sometimes silly direction and enter into a fun fantasy world where there is always a happy ending?

MAKING FRIENDS - Children, even shy ones, find a friend in just about any situation. My five-year-old granddaughter doesn’t understand the concept of a stranger when it comes to children she encounters. One day, while eating lunch at a restaurant, she met a girl who was eating with her mom and brother. While the adults and siblings finished eating, the two girls sat in a comfy chair near the tables and read a book together. As we left, my granddaughter proclaimed she had a new friend.

Of course, she would probably never see her again, but no matter, for a short time, she had made a new friend.

And, you can never have too many.

PATIENCE - As an adult, when faced with most any task we undertake, we can lose patience when it takes longer than we think it should. Children do not seem to pay attention to a ticking clock. Putting a puzzle together does not need the edges put together first. Legos may take several tries before they stay together. Playing a game may include several starts and stops. Eating is not a timed event. Being patient is an important lesson, and being with children reminds us of this.

SELF-RELIANCE - As soon as children are able, they want to try to do things for themselves. Seeing their faces light up at each new accomplishment reminds us of the pride one feels when learning a new skill. Use their determination as an example. Staying active mentally and physically should be a lifelong pursuit.

UNBRIDLED JOY - It is impossible not to laugh or at least smile when you hear a child laugh with utter abandonment. From the ridiculous to the sublime, finding such joy in life is a gift we, as adults, all too often forget.

APRIL: Month of the MilitaryChild April 30 – National Military Brat Day

The

official symbol of the military brat is the dandelion. Why a dandelion? A dandelion flies and grows wherever it lands. As a poem describing military children states, “Children of the world, blown to all corners of the world, we bloom anywhere.”

During April, and especially on April 30, take time to remember the children of our military men and women. We’ve all seen on television and social media those heartwarming surprise reunions when parents show up unexpectedly at their children’s’ schools and sporting events. They tug at our hearts, and we tear up, just seeing the joy and embraces of family members, because in truth, they miss attending and participating in so many milestone activities with their children. It is the reality of many children whose parent or parents serve on deployments around the world. The statistics are surprising.

According to data from care.com: • Two million children in the United States have a parent on active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.

• On average, a military family moves every two to three years. Imagine having to be the new kid in class every few years.

• Military children attend from six to nine different schools on average, while a small percentage becomes part of the home-schooled population.

• A deployment usually lasts a year. So, while a civilian parent goes to work and returns home in the evening, a military child may not see their parent for long periods of time. Granted, social media makes communication far better than decades ago; however, the dangers that their parent faces remain constant. Added to the danger element, many are deployed for multiple tours.

• If both parents are in the military, they can be and are in many cases, deployed at the same time. Their children then live with other family members until one or both parent returns. Of the approximately 84,000 dual military couples on active duty, around 36,000 children are impacted.

• Children of military parents are more likely to join a branch of service. It makes sense; it’s the life they’ve grown up with. It’s the life they know.

You may wonder what the plusses of being a military child are.

If the family gets to join their parent on assignment, they get to experience life in many corners of the world. Military children develop the ability to adapt to different cultures more easily; they can become almost nomadic, since their roots change so frequently. Asking a military child where they’re from may elicit a puzzled look in response; they have no firm roots. The idea of living in one place their whole life is a foreign concept.

Military children, as indicated by statistics, do find themselves the “new kid in class” frequently. While this may be stressful for many, they also learn to value and develop friendships quickly. Valuing friends left behind, not knowing when or if they’ll see them again may not be easy, but it does develop social adaptability.

Life on military posts or bases, depending on location, can be similar to self-contained communities with shops, grocery stores, recreational options, and schools available.

However, some families may elect to live off-post to experience the local culture more fully—from language skills to local traditions, to new foods. What a storehouse of experiences to carry forward through life!

As we give our thanks to our military service people, include their families and especially their children for the sacrifices they make as well. They are the future of our nation.

Meet Michael McKinney

Michael decided to return to school and earned a master’s degree in nonprofit management with a concentration in leadership from High Point University. “I began my nonprofit career with United Way of Greater Greensboro as Co-Founder of African American Leadership Initiative and board member in 2002,” said Michael.

When

it comes to running a successful nonprofit, heart is at the top of the job description. When the position of Executive Director of Susan G. Komen’s Northwest North Carolina affiliate needed to be filled, Michael McKinney came with a proven ability to lead with passion, commitment, and excellence.

“In my former career,” said Michael, “I worked as a banking executive for 20 years. I loved my job and was very successful in retail, mortgage, business, and commercial banking. But, after my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, I took a long, hard look at where my life was headed.

We lost my dad in 2010, and I decided that I needed a new career path. I wanted the hours I spent working to make a great impact on the world rather than dollars and bonuses.”

Michael served as President of 100 Black Men of American and National Board Member, Commissioner of Guilford County Planning Board, Current Vice Chair of High Point Housing Authority and, most recently, was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to serve on the State Board of Optician. “I joined American Cancer Society five years ago and made some outstanding accomplishment with them, I’m thrilled to join Komen Northwest North Carolina,” said Michael. “I feel like this was an assignment from God. He gave me a servant’s heart, and it’s my honor and privilege to serve so many fellow North Carolinians through Komen! This is such an exciting time at Komen. We have board members who are re-energized and a team of founding chapter members who are as committed to this cause as they were when our local affiliate began 20 years ago! Couple that with the fact that 75% of net proceeds stay in our local communities to pay for free mammographs and diagnostic service for the less fortunate, underinsured and uninsured, and the other 25% goes to national research to find cures; wow! As a new executive director, this situation has put me right in the middle of my dream job! I knew this was going to be a great experience; but already, this kind of energy and passion resonates with the core of why I made such a significant career change more than five years ago!”

At the end of the day, what Michael wants more than anything is to be out of work.

“My dream is to come to work and be told, ‘Go home. Cancer is cured. You no longer have a job,’” said Michael. “That would be the most amazing day ever. I know how it feels to lose someone I love so much to cancer. That knowledge, coupled with the ongoing fight we face, means I don’t go to an office, but I go to a battlefield every day. This organization, and the work we do, is so important. It’s about saving lives and helping people enjoy more years and more memories with the people who matter most. If I can do that – and live to see the day that cancer is cured…if I can watch all these wonderful organizations designed to fight cancer become defunct – I will consider my life’s mission fulfilled and my living on God’s earth, not in vain.”

Michael is a man with heart and purpose. His contagious enthusiasm and genuine care for others resonate with so many. It’s what makes him so good at what he does every day. It’s why he’s been successful at raising millions of dollars for organizations such as the International Civil Rights Museum of Greensboro and the Bennett College for Women.

Susan G. Komen Northwest North Carolina has welcomed Michael with open arms, knowing that his heart will shine in everything he does. He’s excited to be in his role, and supporters know that with him in this leadership role, great things are on the horizon for our local Komen affiliate, and he invites to public to join him.

BUNNY CHOW

“POTTED” BABY CARROTS

BROWN SUGAR ROASTED CARROTS

INGREDIENTS: 4 cups Chex cereal (wheat, corn or rice) 2 cups pretzel sticks 2 cups Cheerios 1 cup candy-coated chocolate eggs (Hershey’s, M&M, etc.)

1 bag white chocolate chips INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients except white chocolate chips.

2. Place white chocolate chips into microwave-safe bowl. Melt for 1.5 minutes at 70% power. Stir until smooth.

3. Pour white chocolate over snack mix and stir gently.

4. Pour mixture onto wax paper and let set until hard. Break apart and serve in a bowl, or bag them to gift.

INGREDIENTS: 2 lbs. carrots (about 7 medium), peeled 3 Tbsp. packed brown sugar ½ tsp. garlic powder ¼ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. black pepper 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted

1. Fill terracotta pots with hummus.

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Create a carrot “top” using a toothpick to poke a hole in the baby carrots. Stuff the hole with a small piece of parsley or cilantro.

2. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

3. Cut carrots into sticks.

1 bag of baby carrots 1 bunch of parsley or cilantro 1 container of garlic hummus terracotta mini-pots INSTRUCTIONS:

4. In a small bowl, stir together brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, pepper and melted butter. Drizzle over carrots and toss to coat.

Fresh Fitness Ideas for Spring

Ahh…

the smell of freshly cut grass, the birds chirping, beautiful weather…Spring is here, and I couldn’t be happier about it. I know most of us think of revamping our fitness and health goals in January, but I can argue that Springtime is a great time for a revamp, too. Additionally, most of us set goals in January and need a bit of a refresher to get us excited about our fitness journeys. Read below for tips on how to add some excitement to your health in this gorgeous Spring weather.

1. Take a walk!

The weather is cool and not too humid yet, so Spring is the best time to gather up your furry friends (or non-furry ones) and take a walk at one of our beautiful parks around the Triad. Some of my favorites: a hike through Tanglewood Park, a stroll through Wake Forest University, and a house- hunting gander through Buena Vista. If you want to add a little strength training to your walk in order to up your heart rate, add some strength bursts every ¼ of a mile. Stop and do squats, pushups, walking lunges and mountain climbers. Do each one for 1 minute.

Sometimes I get bored with always being in the gym and love to take a break from the indoors by working out outside. There are tons of bodyweight strength workouts that can be done anywhere, and why not on your back porch or in the front yard? You may even inspire the neighbors to join you! Here is an example of a 20-minute bodyweight cardio and core workout:

2. Yard work is hard work.

• 1-minute jumping jacks, alternating with 30 seconds of sit-ups and 30 seconds of plank hold—do these three times;

Yard work can be a workout, too! Spend your Saturday weeding, spreading mulch or grass-seed, watering your flower beds and mowing the lawn. One of the pitfalls of yard work can be a sore back, so make sure you keep your form in mind. You should be squatting to lift the mulch, not bending from your waist with straight legs. This may seem silly, but if you pay attention to what you’re doing, you may be surprised at how often you bend from the waist. Bending from the waist does not utilize our core or lower body, and both of those are important to take the focus off our backs.

3. Join a club.

Think about joining a running group, walking club or volunteering to walk dogs at the animal shelter. Spring is an ideal time to meet new people, and why not do that while outdoors and getting a workout? The “Couch to 5K” program is an awesome introduction to running and could be an ideal feat for you and your friends to try together. Sign up for a 5K and set a goal!

4. Go for a spin!

Take your bike for a ride for a couple of hours on the weekend! If you’re like me and don’t own a bike, never fear!

Classic Fudge Brownies

If we’re being honest here, who doesn’t love a good brownie? Cookies, cakes and pies aside, brownies are a classic dessert staple that always goes over well with a crowd. I love a moist, dense, fudge brownie for myself. If you happen to be on the same brownie team as me, follow along, because you are in for a treat!

INGREDIENTS (for 9 servings): 8 ounces chocolate, good quality ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled 1¼ cups sugar 2 eggs, at room temperature 2 teaspoons vanilla ¾ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Chop the chocolate into chunks.

Melt half and reserve the other 4 ounces.

3. Mix butter with the sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Incorporate eggs and vanilla for 1–2 minutes.

4. Whisk in reserved chocolate (NOTE: be sure that the melted chocolate isn’t too hot, or else the eggs will begin to cook).

5. Sift in flour, cocoa powder and salt.

6. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet, being careful not to overmix.

7. Fold in remaining chocolate chunks.

8. Transfer batter into a well-greased brownie pan and cook for 30 minutes. Let cool completely.
