I’m

writing this October installment of “From the Heart” on September 11th. The 20th anniversary of such a horrendous chain of events. I was remiss in mentioning it in my September note. What a surreal day it was. One that I feel sure anyone old enough to remember can recall exactly where they were and what they were doing that day. And, while this day will be forever etched in the memory bank, I will also remember the sense of community and cooperation. The fierce pride of being an American; putting aside all our differences to help and love each other. I think we could all use a little of that now!

Since 1985, October has been associated with breast cancer awareness. It’s hard to believe that in November it will be five years since I was diagnosed with stage 3 Her2 positive breast cancer. Shortly thereafter, thyroid cancer was detected. After chemo, a double mastectomy, thyroidectomy and radiation, I’m blessed beyond words to still be here. Dr. Alexandra Thomas, Dr. Marissa Howard-McNatt, Dr. Karen Winkfield, Dr. Malcom Marks and the entire Wake Forest Baptist Health oncology team, I thank you! Ladies, please stay on top of your mammograms! And fellas, if you notice something, get it checked out. While rare, breast cancer can occur in men, too.

October is our annual Fall Home issue and features the dynamic team collaboration between Blake Ginther and Ashley McKenzie-Sharpe. What a fun time we had shooting the cover in downtown Winston-Salem and Hutch was an amazingly patient model! Whether you’re looking to make a change or improve the one you’re currently living in, there’s sure to be something of interest in this issue for you!

Kids’ Morning Out is back! September KMO at Salem Gymnastics & Swim was a blast, and I almost cried as the adorable kids and parents walked up that day! We missed everyone so much! Be sure to check out our October event at the Hanes Park Tennis Courts on page 91.

The Great Pumpkin

As

an iconic mascot of the autumn season, pumpkins are practically perfect in every way! Large or tiny, bulging or petite, bumpy or smooth, deeply ridged or two-toned, everyone has a preference, even if the names, such as Baby Boo, Sweet Dumpling, Orange Princess, Winter Luxury, or the 25-pound “Gladiator,” are unknown. During the great pumpkin search, the victor may point, exclaiming, “That one! It’s mine!”

The coveted fruit, which comes in grey, blue-green, white, and orange, cannot be ignored in this festive season! From carved Jack-o-Lanterns to pumpkin pie and pumpkin-spiced lattes, autumn’s spotlight can include every aspect, from the seed and pulp to the meat!

Choose Well Meticulously look at all areas of your chosen fruit. It should be firm, without soft spots, and blemish-free. Look especially at the handle and give a tug!

Check the bottom to ensure there are no signs of rot, and whether it sits level.

The Seeds The act of plunging a hand into the innards of the gushy, wet pulp is part of the

thrill in carving the mighty Jack-o-Lantern.

From the deep cleaning, a bowl efficiently contains the remnants—stringy inner fibers and seeds. While they may appear to be only compostable goods, the seeds are rich in antioxidants and minerals, iron, zinc, and magnesium when eaten.

The options: •R OAST: Rinse two cups of seeds, pat dry, and place in a bowl. Add 1½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, 1½ teaspoons of melted butter, and 1¼ teaspoons seasoned salt. Stir!

Spread the coated seeds evenly on a baking sheet. At 250 degrees, stirring occasionally, bake for one hour until the coating appears crisp and golden brown.

•M AKE GRANOLA: Mix the following in a bowl: one cup pumpkin seeds, 1½ cups rolled oats, ½ cup pumpkin puree, ½ cup sugar-free maple syrup, ¼ cup shredded coconut, 2 tablespoons unsalted melted butter, ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Stir!

Spread evenly on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and bake in a 325-degree preheated oven for 30 to 45 minutes. Stir occasionally and remove when crisp.

•P UMPKIN PUREE: Add the strings to a food processor and hit the button, puree! Place the contents in Ziploc bags to freeze for future lovers of bread, pies, and other baked goods.

• SAVE THE SEEDS: After rinsing and patting dry, allow a handful of seeds to rest for a few days before placing them in a Mason jar. Make sure you add a label and date before freezing.

Then, next year, your favorite pumpkin can grow and multiply in your care!

can create delicious appetizers, meals, and desserts with the remaining shell. After stuffing it with this and that, toss it into the oven to make…

•B AKED PUMPKIN CHEESE DIP: In a four-pound pumpkin, coat the interior with a mixture of two minced garlic cloves and two tablespoons vegetable oil; then, alternate layers of toasted white breadcrumbs, Swiss cheese, and a sprinkling of salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Add the top and bake at 350 degrees for two hours. Serve with French bread.

•R OAST PUMPKIN WITH CREAM, THYME, AND PARMESAN: Use a threepound pumpkin. In a small saucepan, combine five fluid ounces of double cream, one clove of sliced garlic, one sprig of thyme, and a dash of salt and pepper. When hot, pour into the pumpkin and sprinkle on Parmesan cheese. Add the lid and bake for 1¾ hours at 300 degrees. (Serves two.)

•S TUFFED PUMPKIN WITH CRANBERRYRAISIN BREAD PUDDING: In a threepound pumpkin, brush the interior with a teaspoon of melted butter and a sprinkle of sugar. Add the lid and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. In a lightly greased eight-inch pan, mix two eggs, ½ cup butter, ¾ cup half-and-half, ¾ cup chopped toasted pecans, and ½ cup fresh cranberries. Cut a16-ounce raisin bread into one-inch cubes. Stir together; then pour within the pumpkin and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Serve with a lemon-vanilla sauce. (Serves 12.)

Disposal As plant matter, the carved pumpkin is the ideal vessel to provide nutrients for a plant; therefore, dig a hole large enough to bury the entire Jack-o-Lantern. Within its cavity, include a chrysanthemum or a woody perennial, such as Rosemary.

The decaying fruit will provide fertilizer, boosting growth and good health!

No hearing aid should be purchased or fit without first seeing an audiologist to determine the severity of the hearing loss or if there is an underlying issue that could be treated medically prior to being fit with amplification. Should it be determined that you have a mild to moderate hearing loss and decide to purchase a set of OTC hearing aids, you should also return to your audiologist for verification testing. This will make sure you are not over amplifying your hearing, thus causing further damage to your ears.

Boo-tacular and Not-So-Scary Halloween Crafts for Kids

spooky season! Halloween is right around the corner. Even though the big festivities don’t happen until the 31st, there are still many ways you can celebrate the holiday all month long. From watching themed movies to finding the perfect costumes, the list of what you could do goes on and on. One of my favorite things is to make fun decorations and crafts to set out for all 31 days. If you are looking to add some Halloween cheer to your house, try making these crafts, which are also great for kids to help with.

Handprint Halloween Keepsakes

Nature Owl Pumpkin

SUPPLIES: • Air-Dry Clay • Acrylic Paint – Color of Your Choice • Orange Acrylic Paint • Brown Acrylic Paint • Drinking Straw • Popsicle Stick • Green Ribbon • Parchment Paper

This craft is great not just for Halloween, but for the entire fall season.

The above supplies will make one handprint.

You will need to double the supplies for both hands.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Roll out the air-dry clay to 1/2” thickness onto the parchment paper.

2. Press your child’s hand into the clay, making sure the handprint shows up clearly.

3. Using the popsicle stick, cut a pumpkin shape into the clay around the handprint, with the handprint being in the middle.

If needed, use water and your fingers to smooth out the edges of the pumpkin.

4. Punch a hole in the pumpkin’s stem with your drinking straw.

5. Move the clay to a dry area and let rest for 24 hours.

6. With the acrylic paint color of your choice, transform your handprint into a Halloweenthemed design, such as a ghost, candy corn, etc. Then, paint the area around your handprint orange like a pumpkin, and the stem brown.

7. Thread the green ribbon through the hole in the stem and hang anywhere you would like some Halloween cheer.

Spider Sugar Drawings SUPPLIES: • 1½ cups All-Purpose Flour • ½ cups Granulated Sugar • 1 teaspoon Vegetable Oil • 1½ cups Water • White Paper • Paint Brushes • Orange, Black, and Purple Watercolors • Spider Stickers DIRECTIONS: 1. In a pot, mix the flour, sugar, water, and oil. Stir over low heat until combined and smooth.

This combination will turn into a glue.

2. Paint spider webs or any other Halloween design over a piece of paper with the glue mixture.

Let dry.

3. Then, using the watercolors, paint the different colors over the dried glue. Your spider webs or other designs will appear.

4. Add spider stickers around the painting when dry.

SUPPLIES: • A Collection of Small to MediumSized Leaves • Acorn Caps • Pinecones • A collection of Grass and Twines • Hot Glue • Small Pumpkin • Medium-Sized Acorn Squash • Thin Leather String DIRECTIONS: 1. W ith the collection of leaves, acorn caps, grass and twines, and pinecones, assembled from your yard, glue small leaves on front of your pumpkin to create feathers for the owl. Be sure to overlap them to add to the feather look.

2. N ext, glue four of the larger leaves onto the sides of the pumpkin to create wings.

3. U sing the thin leather string, hot glue the string to the small acorn squash and build a face outline.

4. D isassemble a pinecone by pulling off the scales. Attach the individual scales with hot glue to the acorn squash for a nose.

5. L astly, create eyes with the acorn caps. Use the grass and twines to design ears and whiskers for your owl.

These three crafts are fun and easy for kids of all ages (including adults).

Make them a part of your annual Halloween traditions!

I

was recently up in the Boone area for a few days helping a friend with some improvements on his family’s mountain home. As I customarily do, I woke up at 4:30 a.m. Quietly, I made my way down to the kitchen to prepare a cup of coffee. Outside, the world was still dark. A few of the earliest “early birds” were starting to proclaim the dawning of a new day from the trees, but other than that it was perfectly serene. Having poured myself a cup of “Joe,” I made my way toward the door that led to the deck overlooking the property. I was looking forward to enjoying my coffee in the cool morning air before going on my run. As I pushed open the screen door, the sounds that the hinges and springs produced stopped me in my tracks. It’s not that I was worried about the sound waking the others. Instead, I froze because I was instantly transported back to my childhood and to a much simpler time. I was no longer standing in my friend’s kitchen in the mountains of North Carolina. I was now at the house of my childhood friend in western Virginia. I could see it all in my mind very clearly. His mother had just served us the best fried baloney sandwiches and Fritos a kid could ever have.

In a frenzy, he and I would push back our chairs, toss the plates into the sink, and bolt toward the kitchen door—the kitchen screen door. From that door came the exact same sounds from its hinges and springs, followed closely by the “SLAM”! as it shut behind us. I could hear the pounding of our running feet across the wooden planks of the porch.

I envisioned my friend and I completely ignoring the few steps leading down and just jumping from the porch out into the yard, as we headed out into the world for more boyhood adventures. With an overwhelming sense of melancholy and warmth, I found myself standing, coffee in hand, back in 2021. With a slight smile, I carried my coffee over to a comfortable chair on the deck. I sat down and thought about how much I missed the simpler times— falling asleep to the hum of a box fan in the window, because we lived in a house without air conditioning.

Turning a dial on the rotary phone in order to talk to a loved one or to make silly prank phone calls. Helping my mom lick the S&H green stamps and affixing them into a small booklet. Running and laughing through a sprinkler on a warm summer day…the list goes on and on.

What sounds take you back? Or is it a smell? Perhaps it is a taste. In a world that has become so fast-paced, slow down and try to find those small reminders that transport you back. In this hectic and, at times, chaotic world, taking the time to cherish those bygone moments and memories can do wonders for the heart and the soul.

Chuck and I will set up an initial meeting to preview the home and get a better understanding of the clients’ design taste and hopes for the renovation. Once the design agreement is signed, I jump right into action working with clients to make those design selections and we talk through in detail what needs to be selected and ordered. Next we “shop” together and select everything from tile and countertops to light fixtures and paint. All the fun stuff!

Bringing the clients’ wish list and budget together is always a fun challenge! Once we have an understanding of how clients see the space being used, it helps us shape the wish list. Then we know where we can change the scope to help them meet that budget.

Clients can expect open, constant and honest communication from the ICON team. We want to make sure that we are consistently meeting their needs and expectations. Both myself and their designated project manager are with them every step of the way. There is a set project timeline established prior to demo and we all work hard to stick to that deadline.

Your project manager handles all of our subcontractors and I handle all of our design needs, leaving little room for error or project frustrations.

ESTABLISHING A TIMELINE Project timelines vary based on the type, size and complexity of any project.

However, past experience will help us provide the probable timeline for a project. There are many factors that can alter a project timeline. For example, if a material selection is made during construction with an extended lead time, the client will need to make a decision to keep the selection - which can extend the completion date - or make a new selection.

PREPARING FOR A RENOVATION Preparing for a renovation is very important. If the project is a kitchen renovation, you need to consider the temporary kitchen needs for your family. What was once your dining room may now become your temporary kitchen. Consider an outdoor grill, microwave, skillet and toaster oven for making meals. We have had clients use camping gear for outdoor temporary sinks that connect to a garden hose.

Consider your storage needs. Where will you put your items? Do you need a storage unit? Will you need to call a moving company? Keep an open mind, knowing that when something goes sideways, we are all human and it can be corrected.

Families often want to eliminate the unwelcome frustration and added stress of a messy, dirty, or disorganized home, but they haven’t necessarily figured out how to implement the steps they need to get there!

Reducing Clutter Before It Begins You don’t have to “Marie Kondo” your entire home, but be realistic about which clutter you can eliminate. Does the corner of the entryway table get overthrown with random junk mail daily? Consider sorting through the mail outside and tossing the unimportant stuff into the can before coming in. Kids bringing home a sweet, but overwhelming amount of artwork from school weekly? Instead of shoving it on top of the fridge, choose your favorite pieces to display and take photos of the rest, rather than keeping every piece! If you know the garage is going to be a dumping ground for sports season in Spring, start getting rid of things now that the family doesn’t use to make space ahead of time and avoid a huge mess.

You can absolutely find this chunk of time to focus on one or two things you can “attack.” Maybe it’s the kitchen counters driving you crazy or the kitty litter right now. Use that limited time to get to work and knock out whatever you decide to focus on. You may find you finish those one or two things quicker than you thought, so add in something else if you can. If your spouse or kids are home during this time, consider making it a family “attack,” where everyone has the same 15 minutes to rock out a single cleaning or picking-up project in that time frame!

Collect Safe & Easy-to-Use Cleaning Supplies Don’t for a second assume children are useless when it comes to keeping a clean house. While they may be the main mess-makers, they are more than capable of taking on some tasks that align with their age. (Even toddlers can throw a toy or two into a basket!) Having non-toxic cleaning supplies such as water- and vinegar-based spray bottles or essential oil mixtures, for multi-surface cleaning that is safe for everyone involved, very helpful. Organizing supplies like garbage bags, microfiber cloths, paper towels, and your kid-safe cleaners in an easy-access spot in the house is key, so when it’s time to fix a quick mess or take time for those “15-minute attack cleans,” everyone knows where to get what they need!

Eliminating Pests in the Home

You may recall the illustration, or one similar, of Ed and Barbara welcoming the beetle family, accompanied by suitcases, at their front door. What does Barbara say? “I’ll get the coffee on!” The moment is inevitable. Seasonal invaders arrive seeking the same home comforts—shelter, food, and water! Prevention is by far the most effective way to ensure bugs have no choice but to leave!

WELCOME SIGN Sometimes, an open door, basket, grocery bag, or package is the carrier to transport pests indoors. Before taking a step over the threshold, despite the heavily laden weight, take time to examine the various containers, especially if they hold produce or a live plant. Family pets can also bring in nature.

Additionally: • Brush your family’s outdoor pets transitioning to the indoors, even if it’s with a tool or your hand.

• Perhaps the used couch was a great find, but you don’t know what’s lurking unseen on it, awaiting better food prospects!

SEALING CREVICES AND GAPS The slightest opening is just enough for a critter to enter; therefore, take the time to check all your windows, screens, sliding and storm doors, and other points of entry. After turning on all the interior lights, go outdoors to search for light emanating from the house. If you find it, that is a good indication you’ll need to caulk, replace weatherstripping, renew the door sweep, use screen tape, or repair the threshold. In looking for crevices, cracks, holes, and vent openings, check your foundation, attic, and fuse boxes, wall outlets, light switches, and baseboards!

types of bugs. Ants love sweetened foods, while the Indian meal moth prefers rice, flour, cereal, and nuts. The flour beetle is aptly named; yet it also likes to delve into cake mix boxes, dried fruits, nuts, chocolate, and spices. One solution is eliminating cardboard and easy-access bags and investing in heavy-duty, plastic, sealable containers with snapping or spinning lids. Consider using a food-grade bucket and Gamma lid to store flour, sugar, rice, and pet food. Use Mason jars to contain smaller, daily amounts, ensuring your food is just for human consumption.

CHECK PLANTS Beyond the cupboards and pantries, you might need to look in one hidden location—your plants. Aphids, earwigs, scale, and spider mites are just a few pests which can be lurking in your soil or attached to leaves.

Transplant to another pot if leaves are not clean!

MOP, VACUUM, AND CLEAN! All your good housekeeping methods will help deter the bugs from staying.

Elicit children to help by emptying trashcans, cleaning sinks, and bathtubs weekly. Use a drain cleaner to wash away drain flies, and remove stacks of paper-based products, including magazines, newspapers, and boxes; cockroaches love them!

THE BASEMENT Rooms underground usually lack foot traffic during the week; therefore, insects easily can establish homes without detection. Silverfish, springtails, and centipedes prefer damp locations.

Start walking around.

Look near the doorway, windows, corners of walls, on the bathroom floors, and near water spigots. You might find a trail of insects!

THE SOLUTION: • Fix any leaky faucets, drains, or pipes.

• Ensure your waterrun appliances are working correctly.

• Start running a dehumidifier.

CLEAN-UP OUTSIDE Buckets of standing water are breeding areas for mosquitoes, and weeds harbor insect pests. Keep branches and other plant debris away from the foundation of your home. Consider setting up firewood and compost bins at a distance!

NATURAL SOLUTIONS Fortunately, there are household items, plants, and essential oils that can rid your home of unwanted guests!

• ANTS: Make a solution of Borax with sugar, honey, or syrup. The bait will return to the nest and poison the colony.

• FLIES: In a jar, add an inch’s worth of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band, and poke holes in the top. This method also works well for gnats.

• INDIAN MEAL MOTHS: Add a deterrent to your cupboards and pantries, and around your trash cans and bays.

• SILVERFISH: Sprinkle cedar chips in damp areas. Make sure to collect them and add fresh, if needed!

• SPIDERS: Rub a citrus peel or essential oil along baseboards and bookshelves.

Keep researching other methods to deter pests in every season. With each effort, you’ll soon live in a home without uninvited company!

Thinking. Assessing. A gardener’s new beginnings require methodical plans. With its mild weather, rainfall, and lack of pests, October is one of the best months to take advantage of the growing season. But, first, you’ll need to tackle aiding the soil!

SEEDS IDEAL FOR ZONE 7:

Increasing the Organic Matter

• ONIONS: Save space by planting carrots and onions together, between two and four inches apart. Add onions to the garden between September and March. Harvest in 25 to 34 weeks, and dry before storing.

Transitioning the garden to a new season requires ensuring your plants thrive in a healthy environment. The “no-till method” is a system of layering organic components, like compost and animal fertilizers, over the soil each spring and fall. The nutrient-heavy base, approximately two inches deep, improves the texture and the overall health of seeds and young plants. With this method, tools are not necessary; instead, press lightly into the soil’s surface, place seeds or plants, and cover.

DO’S: •O rganic mulches can include formerly living materials such as paper, shredded bark, grass clippings, and straw. Weed-free hay or straw will discourage weeds, while adding organic matter and moisture retention to your soil.

•C ompost is an essential additive to your garden. As a base, mix it with your soil.

If you do not have compost, you can toss banana peels and coffee grounds into your garden. Digging a trench and covering the compost with soil is an option; however, the area will need time, direct sunlight, and occasional water to decompose fully.

• When wood ash is cold, add to your garden; it serves as a natural lime additive.

DON’TS •B e careful what classifies as topsoil. You may bring diseases, harmful insects, and chemical residues into your garden, which will result in an uphill battle against them.

•M ulch is a quality amendment; however, it may take up to two years to decompose. (Without a soil test to determine your current pH level and nutrients, it is best NOT to add fertilizers.)

What to Plant?

Root vegetables come in various colors and fill your beds with vibrant colors, such as purple, red, white, green, yellow, and pink.

Consider developing mounds to create walkways; insulate your crops from cold temperatures; and allowing for water drainage.

Add a layer of mulch to the base of each plant for extra protection!

By late September, you can still plant beets, carrots, leeks, parsnips, and turnips from seed; however, they will need to have grown to plants by October.

•G ARLIC: For a hearty crop, plant individual cloves at an eightinch depth, and consider adding a slow-release fertilizer. (Leave the paper covering intact.) Harvest in 17 to 25 weeks.

•R ADISH: Sow seeds directly about ½ inch deep, one inch apart, and in rows 12 inches apart. As a fast-growing plant, radish can be harvested in three weeks with some varieties.

•S HALLOTS: Compatible with carrots, beets, and lettuce, shallots are an easy-to-grow bulb. Plant eight inches apart. Harvest between 12 and 15 weeks.

Planting Greens Crops of leafy greens can thrive past September. Given the advanced growth of established plants, arugula, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, mustard greens, and spinach will do well.

SEEDS IDEAL FOR ZONE 7: •F AVA BEANS: An easy-to-grow broad bean. It’s vital to sow seeds four inches below the surface and roughly eight inches apart. (Harvest in 12 to 22 weeks.)

•C HIVES: With an onion flavoring, chives are a fantastic herb to have on hand. Compatible with beets and carrots, plant five inches apart and harvest at 17 weeks.

Considering a Cover Crop Weed control is a constant fight for gardeners. The solution is planting a cover crop, such as mustard, radish, and buckwheat, which improves the soil structure while removing excess nitrogen.

In addition, alfalfa, clovers, and especially legumes work to convert the soil’s bacteria into nitrogen. Using cover crops prevents sun exposure to unwelcome seeds. In spring, the earth will be loose and light, perfect for planting!

Winter Preparation Before winter, add one of the best sources of organic matter, shredded leaves. While adding trace minerals such as calcium and magnesium, “nature’s gift” also provides a welcomed food source for earthworms and other microbes. Leaf mold retains up to five times its weight in water, making it an essential additive to any garden. Placed in gardens to overwinter, it will serve as an insulator and protect against winter winds and cold.

Breaks Ground on Reimagined Museum Forsyth County Commissioners, Mayor Allen Joines, and local business and community leaders joined Kaleideum representatives to break ground on a new $43.5 million museum on August 19, 2021. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is funding $30.5 million, and the City of Winston-Salem is providing $2 million for development of the adjacent plaza. Kaleideum has raised $10.1 million of an $11 million capital campaign toward the remaining funding.

The new building is scheduled to open in fall 2023 and will be located at the corner of West Third Street and Town Run Lane in downtown Winston-Salem.

“In designing the spaces for the reimagined Kaleideum, we have responded to the wants and needs of the community,” said Elizabeth Dampier, Kaleideum Executive Director. “With the new museum, we are moving beyond the concepts of a singular children’s museum or science center to become a learning museum that blends arts and sciences while recognizing the value of both, not as silos, but as integrally connected tools that work together.

“The vision is to be an essential component in creating a community that values each other, fosters a passion for learning, and encourages problemsolving, communication, and creative skills that will help us all be more successful in our future careers and lives,” Dampier added. “With a strong focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and a new emphasis on robotics, Kaleideum is ready to welcome our entire community to learn, smile, and create memories that last a lifetime.”

Dampier said Kaleideum will open with nine exhibitions that allow for multiple types of engagement and appeal to visitors of varying ages and development. These multifaceted, open-ended experiences will prompt visitors to test theories, seek answers to questions, think critically, shift perspectives, and explore at their own pace.

“After careful study and consideration, we selected the central downtown site for a multitude of reasons—the most important being that it is accessible to the entire community,” Dampier said. “Kaleideum will be a tremendous asset to our whole community for decades to come. The reimagined Kaleideum would not have been possible without the wisdom and generosity of our Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, the City of Winston-Salem and the generosity of the community.”

During the groundbreaking ceremony on August 19, Kaleideum officials thanked the present and past members of the Junior League of WinstonSalem for their extraordinary vision and hard work in the creation of Kaleideum’s predecessors, SciWorks and the Children’s Museum of WinstonSalem. Planning for the new building began in 2016 after SciWorks and the Children’s Museum merged to form Kaleideum.

At the groundbreaking, Kaleideum said that it had received gifts of $2.25 million from the L. David Mounts Foundation, $2 million from Novant Health, and $1 million from Wake Forest Baptist Health.

Kaleideum has also announced additional gifts from many generous donors, including Reynolds American Foundation, a supporter who wishes to remain anonymous, the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, the John Wesley and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foundation, Scottie and David Neill, the Duke Energy Foundation, Dr. Steven Feldman and Leora Hankin, First Citizens Bank & Trust, the James G. Hanes Memorial Fund, the Sam N. Carter and Pauline H. Carter Fund, The Winston-Salem Foundation, the Twin City Development Fund, and Wells Fargo Foundation.

Frank L. Blum Construction Company is the general contractor for the project. The architects for the new Kaleideum are Gensler and Stitch Design Shop.

“The building’s design is a response to the mission and character of the museum blended with the vibrancy of the City of Arts and Innovation,” said Brad Burns, Design Director, Gensler Raleigh. “The design provides an efficient framework to support the museum’s ongoing operations with back of house spaces at the lower level, flexible rooms at the main level for events of various sizes, and exhibit spaces distributed from the main level up to the roof.”

ABOUT KALEIDEUM Kaleideum was formed by the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks in July 2016. Kaleideum Downtown (formerly The Children’s Museum) was founded by the Junior League of Winston-Salem and opened its doors in 2004. eye is a problem that millions of Americans suffer from. It’s uncomfortable and leads to itching, burning eyes, as well as eye fatigue.

It’s estimated that up to 15% of the population struggles with the issue – so much that Google reports that the search term “dry eye syndrome” doubled between 2010 and 2020.

The condition leads to so much more than discomfort. It can cause eye redness, problems with light sensitivity and make it harder to drive at night. Causes of dry eyes can come from hormonal changes, allergies, aging, medications and even certain autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and thyroid diseases.

Additionally, excessive screen time can also contribute to eye dryness.

Dr. Juawana Hall hears it all the time from patients who struggle with dry eye symptoms. An eye doctor who is always looking for innovative solutions to common eye issues, she recently shared about the latest treatments that have come out to combat dry eyes.

“One of the easiest ways people can treat dry eyes naturally is with fish oil,” Dr. Hall explained.

“A high-quality omega-3 fatty acid supplement is proven to support eye health, including the promotion of healthy tear glands, which are designed to ensure that our eyes get enough moisture to function correctly. Not all fish oil is created equal, so be sure to discuss with your doctor which supplements will best meet your needs. We also treat our patients with Eysuvis, a new short-term prescription that includes a corticosteroid. These drops help target the immune responses that can cause flare-ups of dry eye symptoms. These drops can be used for up to two weeks, and we’ve found that patients who have used them have much less swelling, which helps eliminate the pain associated with dry eyes.

“But some cases of dry eyes need a little more help,” Dr. Hall continued. “One of the newest

treatment options was FDA approved in April of this year. OptiLight IPL is a new technology that goes beyond treating the dry eye symptoms by also addressing the inflammation that is often a contributing factor to the problem. This procedure can actually help to regrow tear structures, which is really innovative.”

Beyond these options, Dr. Hall shared, “Alcon has introduced a new suite of products that have been super helpful for severe dry eyes. The Systane iLux is an in-office treatment that significantly improves evaporative dry eye, the most common type. This treatment helps patients reduce severe symptoms within two weeks to mild to normal range.”

As we move into fall and winter, dry eyes become more of a problem.

“Because of cooler weather and indoor heating, dry eye symptoms are worse during the fall and winter,” explained Dr. Hall. “But there is no need to suffer. Certainly, we don’t want patients rubbing their eyes for relief and making things worse. Artificial tears bring some relief temporarily, but newer treatments look to do more. Dry eye is treatable, but like any medical condition, it should be handled under the supervision of a medical professional. I would encourage anyone who struggles with dry eyes to schedule an appointment with us, so we can figure out the best solutions for their unique needs and lifestyle.”

Cookie Cutter Craft Projects Paint Stampers - Squirt a few dabs of your favorite colors onto a paper plate.

Then, gently dip your cookie cutter shapes into the colors and place down firmly on the surface to which you want to add some fun-colored shapes! Plain wrapping paper is a great idea for this!

Soap Molds - Silicone and plastic molds can get expensive, so give your cookie cutters a try. Place parchment paper on a cookie sheet with your chosen metal cutters down and slowly add your soap mixture from the top. Let dry following the soap instructions.

Upcycled Crayons - All those broken crayons lying around can be given a second chance at life! Using a wax paperlined cookie sheet, place broken crayons inside metal cookie cutters and bake in the oven until melted together. Let cook and enjoy fun shapes to color with!

Salt Dough Ornaments - Flour, salt, and water is all you need for a long-lasting dough recipe! Follow a favorite you find online and use cookie cutters to create interesting ornaments you can decorate with paint, glitter, ModPodge, and more. Add a small hole and some string to hang.

Pumpkin Carving - Create silly or spooky designs on this year’s pumpkins with your cookie cutters by placing them where you’d like the cutout to appear and holding a wood block up to it. Then, gently hammer the shape into the flesh of the pumpkin! Finally, pop out the excess.

Cookie Cutter Home Decor Bird Seed Feeders - Add something sweet for the birds in your backyard!

The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, CO Although Estes Park is a must-see alone, due to its stunning mountain views and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, the charming Stanley Hotel also draws in ghost-hunting visitors to the small town. First opened in 1909, The Stanley Hotel was the inspiration and film location for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King’s The Shining, which prompted guests to report paranormal experiences following the release of the ever-popular 1980 horror flick. While accommodations in the coveted Estes Park area can be pricey (I suggest booking a hotel room in nearby Loveland), visitors fortunately don’t need a reservation at The Stanley to participate in the hotel’s 60-minute nighttime tour, in order to learn more about the hotel’s haunted reputation after dark. Some tours include access to the hotel’s limestone and quartz underground cave system, previously used by employees to get quickly around the massive property. Guests most frequently request Room 217, due to its haunted reputation from the fictional Overlook Hotel in the Stephen King novel. It’s been reported that even actor Jim Carrey became so frightened inside Room 217 that he ran out of the room wearing next to nothing in the middle of the night throughout the filming of Dumb and Dumber. Looking on the Bright Side: the Good Things about ADHD

BY KAREN COOPER Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a commonly diagnosed disorder in children, affecting approximately 9.4% of children in the United States. ADHD is a highly genetic, neurobiological condition that also continues into adulthood in a high percentage of the children who have it. There are varying degrees of severity, but anyone who has ADHD or loves someone with ADHD knows that it can make life complicated and very frustrating at times. Contrary to what some believe, it cannot be “fixed” by “running around outside for a while.”

On the flip side, living with ADHD gives many people a different perspective on life and encourages them to approach tasks and situations differently than others might. This results in some amazing creativity and innovative thinking.

In his article, “Mis-Diagnosis and Dual Diagnosis of Gifted Children,” James T. Webb, Ph.D., notes, “Many gifted and talented children (and adults) are being mis-diagnosed by psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, and other health care professionals,” as having ADHD, OCD, Mood Disorders and other conditions.

Individuals with ADHD are often very smart, original, and funny. They have faced the challenges of dealing with being neurologically complex and learned novel ways to manage their symptoms…and really, this just makes them more interesting and exciting to be around.

Channeled correctly, their impulsiveness and spontaneity can be excellent qualities which will contribute excitement and interest to an ADHD person’s life (and the lives of those around them). It’s good to say “Yes” to things and take advantage of opportunities when they arise.

Many successful people demonstrate that having ADHD doesn’t mean having a life filled with chaos and problems. It’s possible to move beyond the challenges of ADHD and find the good things it can offer. It’s a matter of balancing the hard parts with routines, medication, therapy, or whatever you find to be beneficial…and then capitalizing upon the strengths.

People with ADHD are just like everyone else. We all have to learn to manage our feelings and control our behavior. We all must practice self-regulation to be successful.

Every small business owner has a grand story of why they started the endeavor. It’s not every day a couple of marine biologists dabble in the field of growing mushrooms!

Kathy explains, “We once enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner in Oregon prepared from entirely local ingredients: foraged chanterelle mushrooms, smoked elk, tuna, cattail shoots, and wild greens. It tasted great and made us feel more connected to the land. Now, we want to help provide a similar experience for others—great-tasting local food with a story.”

Borrowed Land Farms Home for the Wheelers is at the foot of Pilot Mountain in Surry County, surrounding specular views, rolling hills, and acres of trees.

The unexpected reality is that edible mushrooms grow within a sterile, temperature- and humidity-controlled lab. The converted 1880s farmhouse allows the Wheeler family to live and prepare “Shroom Cubes,” termed “fruiting blocks,” year-round. Cultures of spawn applied to hydrated sawdust mixtures of soy pellets create the optimal environment, providing wood-loving mushroom production on any scale, from that needed by the hobbyist to the farmer! The result is a seven-inch cube weighing under six pounds.

After fruiting several times, the block can produce up to two pounds of mushrooms.

Grow-Your-Own Ernie and Kathy are happy to advise groups or individuals on viable mushroom cultivation practices. On the other hand, if you ever desired to grow mushrooms, Borrowed Land Farms shortens the time to a matter of weeks. For $30, interested growers could buy a package of 500 Shiitake inoculation plugs. The cost of $20 offers a fully colonized and ready-to-fruit “Shroom Cube Grow Kit,” or a five-pound bag of mushroom spawn. Fruiting blocks come in sizes weighing five or ten pounds each.

Changing the Model Like many producers in the region, 2020 impacted the ebb and flow of Borrowed Land Farms’ seasonal year, grinding the momentum of business to a halt. Rather than continue producing fruiting blocks, growing mushrooms, advertising, and distributing, the Wheelers partnered with a nonprofit company, “Growing for Good,” and committed to operation in the lab. With two eager lab assistants meeting the demands to increase the number of fruiting blocks, Ernie realized a desire to pursue an unexpected passion.

Introducing Gallus Coffee Ernie shares, “It began as a pandemic project. I built a stainlesssteel roaster using a heat gun and an infrared thermometer. From there, my Christmas-gift idea of roasting coffee for family and friends transitioned to a serious investment—a commercial roaster.

I discovered I had the talent to blend flavors to make a great cup of coffee. I’d put my beans up against any commercial brand.”

Niche Homes Hit Mainstream The 3D printed home has hit the mainstream, according to the latest survey from Realtor.com. And while only a small number have been sold to-date, Realtor.com found that 66% of all consumers and 75% of millennials would consider living in a 3D printed home.

The survey also showed that recent homebuyers had a higher awareness of the new technology, which uses 3D printer robotics. It also holds promise to bring ownership to potential first-time buyers frustrated with the sellers’ market, Realtor.com said, adding innovations associated with affordable 3D printed homes could help restore balance to the market.

Our Ever Changing Money Habits The changes to our spending habits were some of the biggest of the pandemic.

From dine-in delivery to home buying, budgets are realigning to the transformed economy, as consumers opt-in to the new retail experience.

While the long-term impacts will be sorted out later, new trends are emerging around how our hard-earned dollars are spent.

Delivery Remains Essential Delivery service grew exponentially during the pandemic. LendingTree said in August that more than 196 million Americans used one in the last year, with 30 percent admitting to overspending on it.

Realtor.com said consumers like the potential of 3D printed homes for energy efficiency, disaster resistance, speed-to-build, ability to customize, and less building waste. But most consumers still want to see how the technology pans out, Realtor.com added. Fun fact: some 3D printed homes can be “built” in a day.

Parents Are Top Financial Influencers One area flagged for improvement during the pandemic was personal finance education. The National Financial Educators Council (NFEC) released the results of a study this Spring that said parents should take a more active role in teaching kids about money.

NFEC said while mothers and fathers evenly split teaching conversations about money with kids, more than half of millennials learned little about personal finance from their parents. NFEC also found the vast majority of Americans favor teaching kids about money in high school.

Fueled by the pandemic, shoppers grew accustomed to delivery. While the most popular were services from online retailers like Amazon, food delivery was a close second. LendingTree reported consumers now have an annual spend of about $2,000 for delivery services.

The delivery era is poised to stay. LendingTree found 45% of Americans plan to continue using delivery as often as they did during the pandemic.

For savers, LendingTree offers this advice: compare prices and find the best deals to avoid blowing your budget.

Millennials Budget More for Travel As more Americans traveled during the summer, patterns emerged about how different generations planned to spend. For example, millennials showed more willingness than other generations to spend more on trips, according to GetYourGuide.com, a travel-booking platform, from a study conducted in July.

Not only were they willing to spend more, they were also more willing to pay to have someone else plan excursions for them.

Tooth Fairy Payments Increase The pandemic hasn’t been easy on the Tooth Fairy’s budget.

Tooth Fairy payouts during the pandemic reached an all-time high, according to new findings from Delta Dental’s Original Tooth Fairy Poll. This year’s poll showed the average cash gift reaching $4.70 a tooth, the highest amount in the poll’s 23-year history.

It sounds like a lot, but it’s only four cents higher than the previous peak in 2017. The value of a tooth when the poll began in 1988: $1.30. Delta Dental points out that the value of the Tooth Fairy’s giving tends to mirror the economy’s overall direction – so the long-term tripling in price may not be such a bad thing.

Trick-or-Treating through the Years How Halloween Has Changed

When

the wind turns cooler, and you can smell the pumpkin spice in the air…you know Halloween is not far behind. Whether you love to go all out with the decorations; help your child pick (or make) the perfect costume; whip up fabulous treats, or just lie low during this time, Halloween has some spooky history that you may not be aware of.

Halloween started out nothing like the happy holiday chock full of Trick or Treating, pumpkin carving, and bags filled with candy we know and love today. No, Halloween evolved from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain (pronounced SAH-win). Samhain was a pagan religious festival with the tradition of welcoming in the harvest and ushering in “the dark half of the year.” People celebrating this festival believed that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world could be crossed over during this time. As Christianity spilled into Celtic lands, the church picked up some of these rituals, combining them with its own. Over the centuries, Halloween changed from a pagan ritual into what we enjoy today.

Halloween really gained popularity in the United States in the 1840s due to the massive influx of Irish immigrants escaping the Potato Famine. In past generations, Halloween was identified closely with mischief, such as throwing cabbages and stealing garden gates.

These days, there are still plenty of Halloween pranks to watch out for, such as egging houses or hanging toilet paper from tree branches… and such antics can result in hefty fines.

The first “haunted houses” opened to the public in 1915, but their Halloween heyday arrived during the Great Depression. People built primitive haunted houses that twisted through creaky buildings and basements and spooked local children. They were a great attraction and had the bonus of keeping kids from participating in destructive pranks.

Halloween costumes and the idea of Trick or Treating started out very different than what

we think of today. Until the 1920s, most Halloween costumes were handmade by the costume wearer or their family. By the 1950s, manufactured costumes were available in stores. How can any of us (of a certain age) forget the costume in a box with the plastic mask held on with an elastic band and the “apron” costume that tied in the back?

When Trick-or-Treating started to become popular in the 1930s and early 1940s, children could expect anything from homemade cookies and pieces of cake to fruit, nuts, coins, and toys. It wasn’t until the 1950s that candy manufacturers began to get in on the act and promote their products for Halloween. And it wasn’t even until the 1970s that wrapped, factory-made candy was seen as the most acceptable thing to hand out to Trick or Treaters at the door. Parents had become much more safety conscious and were worried about the dangers of food tampering with homemade treats.

Beginning in the 1990s, Halloween parties and “Trunk-or-Treat” events emerged as a safer alternative to Trick-or-Treating. Children would gather candy from the opened trunks of cars parked together in a designated parking lot. The new tradition inspired creative car decorations and carnival-type activities where prizes could be won. This is also known as “Halloween tailgating.”

Halloween has become a true national event.

Today, over 179 million Americans celebrate the holiday and spend about $9.1 billion on it per year, according to the National Retail Federation. Costumes, home decorations, competitions for who has the best candy, and elaborate Halloween parties have helped this holiday evolve into something so much more extravagant than its humble beginnings. For most children and adults alike, it is loved and highly anticipated, and a good time to get out and enjoy conversation with neighbors, compare costumes, and consume as much candy as possible.

Five thousand years ago in the Italian Alps, a man equipped with a quiver of arrows, a knife, an axe, and a fire-making kit walked until he succumbed to his injuries and fell in the snow. In 1991, anthropologists and scientists received the perfectly preserved “iceman” to study. The most fascinating item he possessed was a tinder kit, comprising of highly flammable fungus, flakes of pyrite, and embers wrapped in maple leaves, all stored in a birchbark cylinder. No matter the plight or location, the people of that day had the technology to produce fire.

Today, we are equally mesmerized by creating and maintaining a well-stoked blaze, whether it’s intended to heat the home or cook a meal! Fire continues to be essential in our lives.

The Perfect Match Fortunately, the days of unstable combustible matches that produced harmful fumes are long gone. While the tip still mixes red phosphorous and potassium chlorate, the wooden stem contains a fire-retardant element to ease the rate of burning.

TIP: Make your own waterproof matches by dipping strike-anywhere match sticks into a thin coating of melted beeswax!

Building a Fire When a flame reaches a fuel source, such as pine needles, kindling, or paper, it takes time to dry out the material and produces mostly smoke. The greater the source, the faster the material reaches the maximum heat needed to combust into growing hot flames. One basic model is the “fire triangle,” which includes oxygen, heat, and fuel. But tossing a lit match onto tinder and witnessing it burn out illustrates the frustration in balancing appropriate amounts of all three.

Tap into your inner caveman or woman!

• Collect tinder, such as dead grasses, fallen pinecones, leaves, cattail fluff, dandelion seeds, and newspaper. Conifer needles directly from the node will contain a sticky-sap substance to enhance your fire!

• | Gather pencil-sized sticks and sticks the diameter of a quarter. (Resin-soaked sticks called “fatwood” are a convenient pre-made source of kindling.)

• Use only dried wood of varying sizes, gradually working up to large logs.

Twenty twigs have more surface area than one big log; therefore, the smaller bundle has a greater chance of igniting; so, organize sticks

in the formation of a teepee, a log cabin, or pyramid.

Each method allows oxygen to enter from underneath and produce an even flame at a point or in a square.

FIRE STARTERS: C oat a cotton ball in Vaseline, ball-up dryer lint, or add vegetable oil to a Frito corn chip!

Cooking Tools For two million years, humans have cooked animal flesh and vegetables over an open flame. The evolutionary connection between fire, cooking, and eating continues to excite the palate in anticipation of a steaming, hot meal. Cast-iron cookware easily withstands the heat of flames or when food is placed on, or in, a hot layer of oil. Great recipes are found online and in books.

• Aluminum foil, enveloping corn-on-the-cob or meat, potatoes and vegetables, is ideal for a convenient cooking option. Buried deep in the coals, a baked potato needs 30 to 40 minutes. Fish, only five minutes, for a small catch.

• A roasting spit is a primal method. Prepare a rod at least three times the length of the animal.

“Y-shaped” sturdy branches or metal can serve as the crook. You’ll need a drip pan, great for sauces and marinades with a pinch of seasoning and a few tablespoons of wine.

• Dinner on a stick continues to be a favorite cooking style. Whether it’s kabobs, hotdogs, or marshmallows, the technology is simple, fast, and fun!

The mere pleasure of sitting around a campfire creates a powerful calming effect, including lessening levels of anxiety. It’s an innately satisfying experience. The FEAR of Having Kids Far Apart

of us wait eagerly for those two pink lines, the flashing word “Pregnant” to come across the little stick. I remember finding out that I was pregnant with my son. I looked at my 13-year-old, and while my husband and I so badly wanted a baby, fear crept in.

How am I going to do this entire Mom thing again?

What will his relationship be like with his sister when they are 13 years apart? Will she resent him? Resent her stepfather? Me? Diapers Sleepless Nights Driver’s Ed High School Teething Dating College All at the same time. All drastically different points in life.

Every fear, every doubt ran through my mind. Then, he came, and it was time to face the music.

I held my breath.

It was beautiful.

My daughter cried when she saw him. Her fear of holding him wasn’t even a thought, as she swept him into her arms and stared loving at him. As I was healing from a C-section, she did far more than I expected—getting bottles and burp cloths. Reading him stories and rocking him when his daddy and I needed a break. She even changed a few diapers and always offered to help wherever she could.

Not much has changed; if anything, their relationship has gotten stronger. He just turned one and adores his sister. When she gets up from her teenage slumber, he laughs and reaches out for her, and her eyes beam with joy as she sweeps him in her arms, smothering his face with kisses. He hugs her back and coos, and my heart melts.

That fear should be gone, right? There are still days when the fear creeps in, and I wonder if I am doing enough.

On rough days, I can’t help but wonder, did I spend enough time with my daughter today? The guilt creeping in from ordering pizza, instead of making a home-cooked meal. From propping the baby in front of Sesame Street much longer than anticipated, so I could get some much-needed work done.

But then, I peek in the living room and my teenager is on the floor, playing cars with her brother. Lying on the floor so he can crawl all over her, and tickling him. The laughter vibrates through our home and that fear, those doubts, are gone as quickly as they came.

My children may be at different stages in their lives and knowing how to juggle their needs will always be a worry, but the fear of having children far apart in age is just that—a fear. An irrational thought that perhaps they won’t get along. That maybe they’ll resent each other.

Their bond is beyond measure. Their love for each other solidified with each smile, each laugh, each hug.

I hope that as the years go by and they each find their own lives and I am gone, that no matter what, they remember the days of playing cars in the living room, the sacrifices that each makes for the other as I struggle to find balance in being a mother to two wonderful children.

I hope that as close as they are today, they will remain so as time goes by.

So, the fear of having kids far apart? Don’t fear it.

Embrace it. Because you will be giving them the greatest gift, each other, and that will last a lifetime.

BY LAUREN SEPHTON The combination of artichoke hearts, spinach, Parmesan cheese, and creamy farmer cheese gives the best flavor for a light, yet satisfying, Spinach-Artichoke Stuffed Chicken. It’s low-carb, easy to make, and a comfort food at its finest!

October is bringing in all things fall, including some of the tastiest seasonal produce. A few include cauliflower, cabbage, mushrooms, potatoes, lettuce, pumpkin, persimmons, apples, grapes, and pineapple. But this month, we’re focusing on two of the most nutrient-dense ingredients, spinach and Jerusalem artichokes.

Spinach is incredibly healthy for the digestive system with it being high in insoluble fiber, high in Vitamin A and C, and an excellent source of Iron to help bring oxygen to your body’s tissues.

Artichoke hearts are loaded with nutrients, as well. First, they may lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and increase “good” HDL cholesterol.

They may also help regulate blood pressure, improve liver health, and lower blood sugar, while also being delicious.

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. Chicken Breasts, about 2-3 chicken breasts 1 Tbsp. Dried Italian Seasoning/Herbs ¼ tsp. Sea Salt ¼ tsp. Black Pepper 1 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil FOR THE SPINACH-ARTICHOKE STUFFING: /3 to ½ cup Frozen Spinach, thawed, 2 oz. ½ c up Farmer Cheese, 4 oz., lightly strained to remove excess liquids* ¼ cup Artichoke Hearts, finely chopped 1 /3 cup Parmesan, grated, or Shredded Mozzarella Cheese 2 Garlic Cloves, finely minced ½ tsp. Red Pepper Flakes ½ tsp. Sea Salt 1

INSTRUCTIONS: •P reheat oven to 350°F. • I n a medium-sized bowl, mix together the thawed spinach, farmer cheese, chopped artichoke hearts, Parmesan, minced garlic, red pepper flakes, and salt.

•M ake a slit in each chicken breast ¾th of the way into the center, so that it will still fold over the stuffing. Season with the Italian dried herbs, sea salt, and black pepper.

• ( Optional) Lightly pound the chicken.

•E venly distribute and stuff the inside of the chicken breasts with the stuffing. Fold over the top of the chicken, the press down to set in place.

• Heat up the olive oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.

• Add the chicken to sear on both sides for 3-4 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.

•T ransfer the oven-safe skillet into the preheated oven to bake for 25-35 minutes, depending on the thickness of the chicken breasts. It is fully cooked when chicken internal temperature reaches 165°F. How Batteries Work A, AA, AAA, C and D cell batteries have the same voltage rating and are interchangeable. The power supply in each equal 1.5 volts.

Three batteries powered together will total 4.5V; however, they differ in amperage; therefore, each produces a different number of watt-hours (Watts are voltage x amperage or the total amount of energy contained in the battery, explaining why batteries come in different sizes).

Hack a 9V Battery With a pair of needle-nose pliers, snip along the crease of the Energizer case and open. You may need to use a screwdriver to help in the endeavor. Contained inside are six quadruple or six AAAA batteries, each holding 1.5 volts. Remove the batteries and the metal tab which connects the batteries. Since they are smaller than AAA batteries, fold over the sensor tab to provide extra space. You can do this for use in any device.

Hack a Cordless Drill Battery Most drill batteries labeled as 18v use 21 volts; the first step is to convert to a standard voltage, such as 12v. “Boost” or “Buck” converters make it easy to regulate energy to convert items from a light to an energy source. (Need electrical know-how.)

Solar, Batteries, and the Hand Crank

• Always use a voltage meter to see how much power remains in your battery; don’t assume it’s dead. You’ll save money and batteries, replacing one instead of three or all six.

Solar power blocks, radios and battery-based chargers are an inexpensive means to ensure your electronics remain powered. Look for items that may have a multi-function option LED flashlight, radio, and multiple USB ports.

• Try this test: Hold the battery roughly two inches above a hard surface and drop. A dead battery will bounce higher than one fully charged. This method won’t work for rechargeable batteries.

• Some models of crank-powered flashlights and camp lights can serve multiple functions, such as a flashlight and backup chargers!

• Clean the connection points of a battery to improve conductivity!

• Do not place batteries into the refrigerator or freezer. If a battery becomes too cold, condensation can occur, which leads to corroded battery ends, leakage, and other damage; instead, store at room temperature.

• Use the same brand-name batteries. Mixing old with new can increase the strain on new batteries and result in an accelerated drain.

• Always remove the batteries when a mechanism is being powered by a plug-in source. This will prevent an unnecessary loss of battery capacity.

Hack Your C-Cell Sometimes the stash of batteries is depleted of the ones we need most. Yes, you can use a C-cell battery in place of a D-cell with this handy trick. Place four quarters into the space between the terminal and the contact! (In cases of emergency, keep a small bag of quarters in your battery box! You’ll be glad you took the time!)

Another hack is to tightly wad up tinfoil to fill the space of a C-cell battery. Place it next to the flashlight’s lid!

Consider placing one in your vehicle; each bedroom; bathrooms; in drawers, such as those of nightstands and side tables; the kitchen; and near exits!

• Stick lights are an excellent item to have on hand, especially for children!

The Emergency Exit Plan A good plan only works well if it’s either discussed or practiced; so, sit down and talk about maneuvering through the home with and without a flashlight. Start practicing today! Children will recall the exercise, remembering the number of stairs and perhaps steps through rooms and descending stairwells. It may seem simple until the lights go out! Bonus points are given to those individuals who can locate their flashlight in seconds!

Do You Pray About It as Much as You Complain About It?

know the drill. Someone or something ticks you off. What do you do? Possibly grumble under your breath. Have an imaginary conversation with the offender and really tell them off. Probably you call a friend to vent your spleen over the matter…. If a guilty verdict went all the way up to ten, I’d have dialed it at an 11 for this one.

Been there. Complained about it, too.

through our worries and frustrations? Do we talk to God about it? Do we invite Him to give us His wisdom and peace? Do we trust God to be a sounding board for our problems?

It’s part of being human. We’re relational communicators who are always seeking justification for what we say and do. So, we call our best friends who will always have our back and take our side, right?! What’s wrong with that?? Nothing…. And everything.

Of course, God doesn’t mind our discussion with friends, but He wants to guide us, too.

When He told us to cast all our cares on Him, He meant it. But still, there’s a real temptation to think that God doesn’t care about those mundane matters. But that’s not what His Word says. We’ve got to get in the habit of praying about things more than we spend complaining about them.

We all need someone we can talk to, but sometimes, in the process of complaining, or dare I say it? Even whining…. We often end up complaining more about things to others than we spend time praying about them with our Heavenly Father.

If you’ve been in church for a while—you know the passage. Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” We’ve heard it, and we know it, but do we believe it? When those moments happen—do we remember to be anxious for nothing? Do we remember that nothing needs to rattle us? Do we turn to prayer? Do we seek ways to be thankful

I’m afraid that I’m pretty hit-and-miss with those questions. I’m not always good about praying first.

While we’re tempted to go to others, let us remember that God is just a prayer away, too.

Jeremiah 33:3a says, “Call to me and I will answer you.” Hebrews 1:1-2 reminds us that God is communicating with us: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”

What would life look like if we did more to live by the truth in 1 John 1:3b, “…our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”?

What would life look like if we did less complaining and a lot more praying?

The loaves and fishes needed to be broken in the miracle of feeding the 5,000.

Gideon and his measly army of 300 men had to break their clay pot lamps before God gave them the impossible victory over the Midianites.

God sent a storm to break apart Paul’s ship to get him where he was supposed to minister. And most importantly of all, Jesus’ body had to be broken in order for the price of our sin to be completely and forever PAID IN FULL. Pastors, you may feel broken after these past years of ministry, but rest assured that broken doesn’t have to mean defeated, hopeless, or ruined. “Broken” in God’s eyes is often the very place he needs us to be for Him to work new miracles and show forth His greatness and power. God is still taking broken things and turning them into victories. Stay tuned because God is not finished writing your final chapter, and He is still our miracle- working God. :)

This

past September, New Day Community Church opened its doors in the Lewisville Community.

If you are looking for a place with people who have it all together, that is not us. If you are looking for a place where everyone has it all figured out, that is not us, either. If you are looking for a place where people pretend that they are perfect, dress to impress, or simply want a nice, packaged devotional thought and then return to life as normal, it’s not happening here. Or, if you are looking for promises of prosperity, health, and wealth, then please

look elsewhere, too. And if you are looking for a place where everyone votes for the same candidates and thinks the exact same way on every issue, again, this probably won’t be a good fit. But if you are looking for something more, a deep connection with God, and with other people who struggle with real-world problems...a place to explore what it looks like to follow Jesus, then New Day might be the place for you. And you are invited!

During this month, we are going through a series entitled “James, Where the Rubber meets the Road.” We will explore Jesus’

brother James’ letter to the early church. And we will discover, even though it was written two millennia ago, that it still speaks to how to live the Jesus-centered life today.

James, if he was anything, was practical!

If you don’t have a faith community or a church home, we invite you to come and join us in our journey as we seek to follow Jesus. We don’t know all the answers, but we strive to trust in the One who does.

To the Friend I Never Knew I Needed— My Sister-in-Law

I

remember having my daughter at 19; all the friends I once had, quickly vanishing. I’d see pictures of them all hanging out, going on trips, and living it up at college.

Me? I was still in college, working harder than I ever did to prove to myself, and to everyone else, that I could complete my degree while raising a child and working full-time. I exchanged my nights of going out for changing diapers and late-night study sessions. Vacations to tropical islands became kid-friendly places and day trips to the zoo.

My life had to change in an instant. And my friends went with it.

I did it, by the way. I finished college. I am now a full-time college professor and almost done with my PhD (crowd throws confetti).

Along the way, I felt alone. Some days were much more challenging than others, and at times, I felt isolated. My friends came and went. It was difficult for me to stay in contact with them or meet their expectations of friendship due to my life, my goals, my daughter. Texts were left unread and nights of going out declined, due to being too tired, or just wanting to curl with my daughter. I don’t regret it, but it would have been nice to have someone who “understood” the struggle of being a young mom and trying to make it.

Make a career. A home. Stability. All of that was harder to come back from due to my age and, well, statistics. They were all working against me.

I didn’t want to become another statistic, so friends, they became a nonpriority.

A few years ago, I got married, and had another child. My daughter is now a teenager, and a lot has changed. We are stable, thriving, and I am so thankful to be able to give my children a good life. The loneliness during those years, it was worth it.

When my brother-in-law started seriously dating a girl, something in me got excited. Could this be? A builtin friendship?

I was already acclimated to the family. I wanted her to feel welcome so quickly, too, we exchanged numbers.

We became friends. Really good friends.

When I got pregnant with my son, six weeks later, she told me she was pregnant too (with a boy!) and that sealed the deal—we became BEST FRIENDS. I never knew what it was like to have a true friend who understood what it was like to be a parent, have a career, and go to school (currently finishing up). At the time, she was finishing nursing school while being pregnant. Instantly, we connected. I knew the challenges, the obstacles, the statistics that were stacked against her.

We encouraged each other. Vented. Complained. Cried. We did it all. And more importantly, shared in the successes.

We both are very busy, but if I leave her message on “read” and respond hours later, she doesn’t judge, because she does it, too, and I get it. There is no judgment. No hard feelings. Just friendship and understanding.

For all these years I was content with not having a friend, a confidante, but now I wonder what I did without her. How I survived without being able to rant and complain or send silly memes too, knowing only she will appreciate them and my humor.

She is, without a doubt, the friend I never knew I needed.

And, boy, am I thankful that my brother-in-law chose her.

I hope she knows that I will never be that friend to desert her or let her down. That no matter what, I am her cheerleader, her sounding board and partner in crime.

is my pleasure to introduce you to Blaze, Forsyth Technical Community College’s new mascot! Blaze, a two-toned gray fox that is native to North Carolina, will lead the Forsyth Tech Trailblazers as they forge new paths forward in our community.

Blaze will represent Forsyth Tech’s 9 campuses and diverse student body of 21,000, and met the community at the Welcome Back Bash on Forsyth Tech’s main campus on August 19.

The Welcome Back Bash brought students, faculty, staff and community members together as Forsyth Tech greeted Blaze.

Also in attendance were well-known and loved WinstonSalem celebrities, including the Wake Forest Demon Deacon, the Winston-Salem State Ram, Winston from the Carolina Thunderbirds, Bolt from the Winston-Salem Dash and the Carolina Disco Turkey. Blaze enjoyed a warm Winston-Salem welcome, with food, t-shirts, games and prizes. Students were able to meet faculty and staff, take a photo with Blaze and pick up new Trailblazer t-shirts.

The decision to adopt a new mascot was a unanimous one. Forsyth Tech leadership conducted focus groups among students, faculty and staff to determine who would best represent the 61-year-old institution. Ultimately, Blaze, with her infectious can-do attitude, won everyone over.

Devin Purgason, Director of College Relations, Marketing and Communication says, “Forsyth Technical Community College is a catalyst for equitable economic mobility, empowering lives and transforming communities. That is our vision, and we believe that we are truly blazing a trail for our community by focusing on student success and economic equity. A trailblazer has to be fierce, fast and fearless, which is exactly what we are at Forsyth Tech. Blaze the Gray Fox represents that idea perfectly for us!”

of a Southern Yankee

On A Good Day

My

earliest childhood memories revolve around my Italian grandparents in upstate New York.

For the first six years of my life, they filled the roles of mother and father. I’ve never been told exactly why my parents sent me to live with them, but I did eventually get a glimpse of why later on….

Many of my memories involve sitting on my grandfather’s lap in the evenings and watching TV. I loved to hear him laugh during shows like All in the Family, Three’s Company, F-Troop, M.A.S.H., and a myriad of other late 70s shows. During the summer, the Yankees took precedence. My grandfather did not miss watching a game, and I grew to love America’s pastime in my grandparents’ living room. During the day, when my grandfather was away at work, the voices of Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and Burt and Ernie emanated from the TV set. I was a child of the Sesame Street generation.

Later in the morning, my grandmother and I would watch Bob Barker give away fabulous prizes and money on The Price is Right. I guess you could say that television played a fairly large role in my early life. At least, I feel like I learned a lot from it, no matter what was on.

My life took a dramatic turn in 1979 when I moved to Virginia to live with my parents. Eight months later, I was being adopted by a couple I’d never met. The attempt to be reunited with my parents failed miserably.

My new parents lived fairly simple lives (they weren’t Amish by any means, but it was pretty close). The house was situated in the mountains of western Virginia.

Surrounded by woods, trails, creeks, and a pond at the end of the lane, the new environment proved to be very healthy for a seven-year-old boy who just went through a traumatic ordeal. I quickly became the type of child who spent more time outside during my waking hours than in.

Unlike today, we only owned one small TV set. It sat in the den on the first floor of our home. To turn the TV on, one had to actually walk up to it and turn this thing called a “knob.” To change channels (and when I say “channels,” I mean TWO channels on a good day), one had to get up from the sofa and turn another knob. In fact, there were two knobs for the channels—one for VHF and one

for UHF. On top of the TV sat two sets of antennae—a “V”-shaped antenna for the VHF and a circular-shaped one for the UHF. My TV viewing, limited already by my desire to be outside, was even more limited by the sheer lack of options available. I can remember going through the woods to my best friend’s house for an expanded assortment of viewing pleasures. His family had one of those BIG antennas on top of the house. If I wanted to watch The Dukes of Hazard or The A-team, I was heading to his place. But overall, I was quite satisfied with ignoring the idiot box. There were far better activities to be involved in anyways—building forts, climbing trees, throwing a baited hook into the pond, constructing dams in the creek.

In certain months, I would go out and gather bowlfuls of wild blueberries and strawberries. My mother would then turn them into preserves or bake a pie. To say that I lived a rather enchanted life is an understatement.

My lack of electronic entertainment during the year was made up for in the summer. Every summer, I would fly alone to upstate New York to visit the same grandparents who raised me until the age of six. This one month of the summer was akin to me returning to modern civilization.

My grandparents had a plethora of TV channels to choose from. And getting to watch Yankees games with my grandfather again was always wonderful. But the Real McCoy was my cousins’ house. They lived less than ½ mile away and it was a safe, easy walk. In their home was a treasure trove of entertainment options. My aunt and uncle had their own TV downstairs, while my cousins had one upstairs. Plus, they had this amazing thing called CABLE. Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, and a young adolescent boy’s dream channel—MTV! But wait, there’s more! My younger cousin, Michael, had the latest, greatest video game system every year—Atari, Nintendo, you name it, he had it!

My 11 months of the year with no video games became obsolete. Many hours were spent getting sore thumbs and crossed eyes playing video games with my cousins. By the end of my month-long visit, I was ready to return to my Swiss Family Robinson life!

Throughout the years, my parents did slowly begin to conform to the times, eventually owning more than one TV, getting cable, purchasing VCRs and DVD players, and satellite service.

Today, children and most young adults don’t know anything other than controlling the TV with a remote and having literally hundreds, if not thousands, of channels to choose from. I actually do not admire them. I feel like they have missed out on something special and rare. As much as I, myself, enjoy the idea of being able to watch anything in the world with the push of a button, would I ever trade in those times of only getting two channels on a good day?

The answer to that question will always be, NEVER.

Reminder: Watch out for the little witches and goblins walking (and riding) around this Halloween.

Don’t Apologize for Having the Spirited Child

If

you go out to the store, you’ve probably encountered the child that doesn’t want to hold their parents’ hand. The one trying so hard to break free so they can wave at everyone that comes by and so they can walk up and down the aisles, exerting their independence.

If you go to the pool, you’ve probably seen the child who refuses help swimming, eagerly making their way to the edge and jumping right in, fearless.

And at the restaurant, the kid who doesn’t want help cutting their food, but struggles through each cut as the meat slides all around their plate. But they don’t care.

They smile proudly as they take that bite that took them ten minutes to cut.

We get frustrated. Wanting to hurry through the store and not say “Hi” to everyone we see. To cut their food so we can eat and get out of the restaurant before all the kids have had enough and start making a scene. But we don’t see the bigger picture. The importance in letting them do these things that drive us crazy.

They’re our spirited children. Our independent thrill-seekers who know

what they want, and so badly want to do it, no matter how young they are or what obstacles are in their way.

I know raising these children can make us nervous; I have one. A strong-willed little boy who tests the boundaries, his own strength (and gravity) every single day. There are days, as I tuck him in at night, I wonder how we survived and how that bruise on his knee got there.

Then he gives me a sweet smile and grabs my neck for a hug and his spirit—it’s there. The roughness, the strength and independence, but his sweetness and kindness, too. And I think about the times I apologize for something he did. Or say he has a lot of energy, in a nervous way, apologizing for his free spirit and energetic nature.

We often make excuses and give disclosures about who our kids are.

Listing all their challenges for fear of being judged. Or them being judged.

It can be so easy to want to apologize for having the spirited child. The one who voices their disappointment a little too loudly or runs full speed ahead at the playground, eager and excited. But that

child, their voice will take them far in life, their strength and endurance make them never want to give up. Foster those traits that so often get tagged as “bad”! Teach them kindness and respect, that using their voice is okay, being adventurous is okay. Having a little bit of extra energy is okay. Teach them to mold those traits into something positive.

• To run real fast and win a race!

• To debate with facts and logic.

(Future lawyer?)

• To never give up. Even cutting their own food. This perseverance will get them far in life.

We need to normalize, not apologize, for our children being who they are. Let them navigate life and their own personalities without judgment, but with love and guidance from people who support them and who they are, not trying to mold them into someone that society wants them to be. So, I will no longer be apologizing for having a spirited child. I will help him navigate who he is and embrace it and teach him to not let anyone change him, because he is perfect the way he is.

The following delish gourmet fall flavors are dessert-like and can be enjoyed in teas and coffees: chai, pumpkin spice, apple cider, maple, caramel, ginger, pecan, hazelnut, amaretto/almond, cinnamon, and orange spice. 1. Line a large pan with parchment paper spread with coconut oil to eliminate sticking.

2. Add dates into food processor until finely ground and combine remaining ingredients in large mixing bowl. Blend well and gauge consistency. If too dry, add more melted coconut oil.

6. P our blended liquid mixture over top and move into oven.

7. B ake for about 30-35 minutes until pokable with a fork, but not overly brown and mushy.

3. Gently press crust mixture down into pan to form bottom layer (use a spatula, cake cutter, or blunt side of wide knife to help mash the crust). Make the layer of crust as even as possible.

NOTE: There are no strict measurements here—experiment to taste.

CHAI PUMPKIN ORANGE SPICE NO-BAKE CHEESECAKE (Vegan and Gluten-Free) CRUST INGREDIENTS: 1 cup Dates (pitted and roughly chopped) 1½ cup raw Walnuts/Pecans/Almonds 2-3 teaspoons Orange Zest 2 t easpoons Maple Syrup/Honey (optional for extra sweetness) 1½ Tablespoons Coconut Oil (melted) Pinch of Himalayan Pink or Sea Salt FILLING INGREDIENTS: ½ cup Coconut Milk (full fat)

4. Place pan in freezer and work on preparing the filling. Soak nuts in water and drain excess liquid, add to blender and other filling ingredients. Puree until smooth (around 2-3 minutes).

5. Remove pan with crust from freezer and pour in filling. Spread batter evenly, using spatula, and tap pan to release any air bubbles.

6. Place cheesecake in freezer until firm (about 4-6 hours, depending on size of dish).

7. Top with ground chai spices, grated orange zest, and drizzle with chocolate/ caramel sauce (optional).

Amending Soil with Fertilizers

The

soil’s structure is vital to building a healthy garden. Each plant needs a nutrient-enriched environment comprised of vitamins and minerals. As leaves cover the surface, they offer a natural layer, boosting the level of nutrients. Compostable items such as coffee grounds, eggshells, banana peels, shredded newspaper and organic mulch are equally beneficial additions.

Nevertheless, as the roots push through the organic matter, they absorb only 14 elements within their ecosystem. Sometimes it’s not enough. Too often the soil lacks a nutrient, and we must add one of the big three—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, to help plants reach their full potential.

The Big Three

Most fertilizer bags have a number on them separated by dashes; 4-6-3. Understanding what each number represents and its value to the plant’s growth will help you in the future.

1. N itrogen, N: As the most critical nutrient and first in the sequence, it represents the total percentage of the element in the mixture. It is a protein, ensuring plants develop vigorous, leafy growth. But adding too much nitrogen causes flowering and fruit-bearing plants to emphasize green development and not produce blossoms or fruit.

2. P hosphorus, P: The middle number emphasizes the energy needed for strong root development and blooms. A shortage of the mineral produces weak roots and flowers.

3. P otassium, K: The third number depicts potential overall growth. It regulates root and top growth while balancing overall health. Potassium impacts cold and drought tolerance, disease, and pest resistance.

From succulents to vegetables, roses to rhododendrons, every type of plant has a formula that supplements its needs. Flowering bulbs, for instance, depend on phosphorus for healthy roots; therefore, expect to find the center number higher, such as 6-12-0. Also keep in mind that all-purpose plant foods, such as 10-10-10, may be well-suited for a select group, namely flowers, vegetables, and herbs. Read the packaging to ensure the correct percentage suits your intended plant, shrub, or tree’s needs, as well as the amount of that element it contains.

Secondary Nutrients

at the tip? Well, those were two signs the plant suffered from a calcium deficiency. The solution is to add water-soluble calcium, such as calcium nitrate. Epsom salt, while valuable for young seedlings, contains magnesium sulfate, not calcium, and will create more rot or stress in the plant.

• Magnesium is a secondary nutrient, which helps plants absorb nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Additionally, it encourages seed germination rates!

• Sulfur, too, helps plants absorb calcium, magnesium, and potassium. As more farmers have recognized sulfur deficiencies in their fields, such as stunted growth, spots, or pale leaves, it’s now been recognized as the fourth macronutrient.

With the depletion of essential minerals and vitamins within the soil, the need for supplemental fertilizers becomes valuable.

Blood Meal and Bone Meal

Organic slow-release fertilizers, such as blood and bone meal, can offer a natural balance providing nutrients and proteins to your garden.

• As a byproduct from slaughterhouses, blood meal is essentially dried animal blood that contains high nitrogen levels. Added to gardens, it encourages lush green foliage, balances pH levels while helping to promote blossoms and fruit. The smell of the blood meal also deters deer, moles, and squirrels. Consider adding blood meal to your vegetable plants like asparagus, broccoli, cucumbers, eggplants, melons, pumpkins, squash, and tomatoes.

• Bone meal contains high phosphorus and calcium levels from finely ground bones of pigs, poultry, and fish. The micronutrients magnesium, zinc, and iron help to promote root development, bolster plant growth, and prevent disease. The additive is ideal for flowering plants, bulbs, and rose bushes.

Be aware that both soil amendments come in powder and granular formulas and can burn your plants if overused.

Avoiding Halloween Hazards

month this series will provide important facts and tips surrounding child safety in an effort to support parents and caregivers as they navigate risks and attempt to create the safest environment possible for the children in their lives..

Halloween comes with magic and excitement for children, but unfortunately it can also come with many safety and health hazards. When parents think ahead and create a plan to avoid negative encounters and know what to do to prepare for the safest holiday for their families, everyone can have a good time!

Creating a Safe & Healthy Halloween TRAFFIC SAFETY One of the largest safety concerns on October 31st comes from Trick-orTreating, although it’s not from candy concerns, but traffic incidents. Creating a plan to follow pedestrian traffic laws is extremely important on Halloween, especially in the evening. Remind friends and family to use a sidewalk whenever possible and always to walk along the street facing traffic. Avoid crossing the street where there isn’t a stop sign or crosswalk and try to complete one side of the road before heading to the other side. Not all neighborhoods are used to Trick-or-Treaters or paying close attention to pedestrians, so consider adding an additional safety step by placing reflective tape on the back of your child’s costume, or surprising the kids with glow necklaces or bracelets to help them appear more visible to drivers.

COSTUME SAFETY Another important safety checkpoint for your children should be checking that their costume choices are free of hazards. The first thing to check here is the fit of the costume to ensure nothing is too long, which might cause tripping or falling accidents; that there are no potential choking hazards for younger kids present; and masks are not blocking airways or impairing vision, which can

also lead to accidents. Before bedtime, be sure to completely clean off any costume make-up, glitters, hairsprays or other body adornments that could cause skin irritations or rashes in children, if worn for extended periods of time. Also, make sure any products you choose are labeled non-toxic, if being placed directly on your child’s skin.

CORONAVIRUS SAFETY Remember that there is still a global pandemic going on and unfortunately, kids are not immune to COVID-19.

Whether you choose to celebrate the holiday with a close circle of loved ones or attend large public functions, be sure to keep hand washing and social distancing a priority whenever possible. Have open communication with the people you plan to share your Halloween with by asking if anyone is sick or symptomatic to please hold off this holiday in joining the fun, in respect for everyone’s safety.

Setting Expectations on Halloween OLDER CHILDREN One of the best ways to ensure everyone’s safety is to make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to what to expect. If you have older children who will be celebrating with friends or trick-or-treating without a parent, consider setting a curfew and making sure at least one or two of them have cell phones to contact you in the event you need to get in touch. Discussing ahead of time where they will be and for which time frame is important, as well, in case of an emergency. As much as your children may feel independent and want to tell you that they “know the drill,” safety precautions can always bear repeating, so remind them about waiting to eat treats from strangers until they get home and never to go into someone’s house that they don’t know.

YOUNGER CHILDREN For younger children who will be with adults, expectations are equally

important in order to avoid any misunderstandings and possible safety issues. Depending on the age of your child, let them know what the plan is and who is involved. For instance, “We are going to Grandma’s neighborhood to trick-or-treat with your cousins, so remember we’ll be staying close to Mommy and Aunt Jessica tonight. We’re going to go back to Grandma’s house to sort through candy, so you can have a few pieces before bedtime.” Be specific about some of the plan to help them hear it from the get-go and hopefully let a few parts of it sink in! Remind them about walking slowly, how to cross the street safely and when to wait to indulge in treats if they need checking!

PARENTS Kids aren’t the only ones needing expectations and a plan for the Halloween festivities! Make sure all grown- ups involved in the celebration understand which kids will be with whom and for how long. Perhaps some of the adults present will have different roles, such as candy inspecting and being aware of any food allergies of the children, while others may be the official trunk-or-treat car hoppers, walking along with each child that evening, reminding everyone to put their electronic devices down and keep an eye on Trick-orTreaters, especially when crossing the street or going to neighbors’ houses you don’t actually know.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD SEE A COUNSELOR?

With

all of the stressors we’re all facing today, perhaps it’s no surprise that mental health symptoms are on the rise.

If you’ve noticed your child has been struggling with stress, anxiety, challenging behaviors, and other social-emotional concerns recently, you may be wondering if, when, and how you should reach out for professional help from a counselor or therapist. The simple answer to this question is that reaching out for help can always be a good idea, as we all can use some extra support and guidance at different points in our lives. There should be no shame or stigma around reaching out for help for mental health concerns, whether for children, teenagers, or adults.

However, there are certain situations in which it can be especially important to seek professional support. Below are some questions to consider to help you determine whether your child’s mental health concerns might signify a need for professional help: Is your child’s mental health improving in response to selfhelp strategies or different parenting approaches that you’ve tried? There are a lot of ways individuals and families can promote positive mental health on their own. This includes using relaxation strategies, staying socially connected in healthy relationships, engaging in physical activity, getting adequate rest, and using positive coping skills. In addition, parents can help foster positive mental health among their children by using positive, consistent parenting approaches, teaching children coping and relationship skills, and modeling positive self-care for themselves. However, if you and your child have tried a lot of these strategies on your own, but your child’s mental health symptoms seem to be staying the same or even getting worse, this may indicate that it’s time to seek help from a trained professional.

Are your child’s mental health symptoms causing you and/ or your child significant distress? Sometimes, mental health symptoms come and go. We all have especially good and bad days from time to time. If you’re finding that your child’s symptoms are causing them distress consistently over an extended period of time, that may be a sign their symptoms are escalating. As a parent, trust your instincts as well. If you feel very distressed or worried about your child’s mental health, this may be your intuition signaling to you that your child is struggling, even if your child doesn’t openly admit it.

Meeting with a professional counselor can help parents and children understand the nature and severity of mental health

symptoms, as well as offer suggested treatment approaches or other resources to provide support.

How are your child’s mental health symptoms impacting their functioning in different areas of life? When mental health symptoms start to impact children’s relationships with others, schoolwork, extracurricular activities, or other areas of their lives, this can lead to secondary problems that can create even more stress and challenges for them and their families. This can become a cycle in which the mental health challenges lead to other problems, which can then impact the child’s self-esteem and lead to even more significant mental health challenges. Talking with a professional can help children and families learn to manage and, hopefully, reduce these secondary problems.

I recommend that parents consider reaching out for counseling as soon as they start to identify concerns regarding their child’s mental health. Here in the Piedmont Triad, there are many wonderful professional counselors and therapists who specialize in working with children and families, but many of them have wait lists, so it could take a couple months or more between the time you call for an appointment and when you can actually meet with a counselor for the first time. Of course, if your child is experiencing a mental health emergency or seems to be a threat to their own and/or another person’s safety, be sure to reach out for immediate assistance by calling 9-1-1 or the mental health crisis unit in your area.

If your child is open to talking about this, you might also try asking them for their thoughts on what kind of person they’d be most comfortable working with, such as the age, gender, or general approach the counselor uses. It’s important for you as the parent to feel comfortable and think the counselor is a good fit for your family, too.

As a parent, it’s hard to watch your child struggle. While you’re focusing on helping your child have positive mental health, but sure to take good care of yourself, too, which may mean seeking counseling for yourself at the same time, or even family counseling to work on your relationship. I love October – leaves changing, cooler air, recipes reserved for autumn temperatures, pumpkin chai lattes (that’s a personal preference), Halloween, and this year, a family trip to Disney World.

We usually take the trip to Disney in January, but, as with a myriad of things, COVID made for a postponement. Will it be the trip we are all used to? We all know it won’t be, but my family has been making this biyearly trip for a long time, and we need this getaway. All of the adults, and the one child that is eligible, have been vaccinated. We will wear masks, socially distance, and keep hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes with us. Those items are almost the norm anyway, so the changes will be driving instead of flying, the crowds, and some rides, but mainly our perceptions. However, the important things are being together, seeing the grandchildren’s faces, and watching them experience all Disney World has to offer for the first time due to age, height requirement, or new-found bravery.

We used to fly to Orlando so that the younger children wouldn’t have to be in a car seat for long periods of time. Now, with the uncertainty of flights departing when they are scheduled or departing at all, and with the children being older, it is fine to drive. We will take our time, and stop for the night. Truthfully, by the time we drove to Raleigh to make the flight, went through security, waited for the flight to board, the flight itself, and waiting for transportation to our resort, it took about as much time as driving.

The atmosphere may be a little different – right now they are not having any parades – instead they are having cavalcades. This means that the main mouse

Mickey and his cohorts, the princesses, and other Disney characters can be seen here and there riding in large vehicles – not the up close and personal children are used to. Many of the rides have plastic barriers separating the rows of seats. Other rides are not being filled to capacity so as not to have strangers sitting next to each other. This may make for a longer wait, but is a safety feature we won’t mind.

These changes will most likely be noticed by the adults and not the children. They will rejoice in being at “the most magical place on Earth,” going on their favorite rides and finally being old enough to try some new ones, taking in all of the four parks, likely several times while we are there. Disney World does have a new reservation system to get into each park. You have to reserve a park that you want to go to in the morning for each day you are there. In the afternoon, if you have a certain ticket, you can hop to another park, but only if it is not at capacity. That will be an interesting twist, but I haven’t read any complaints about this so far.

For me, this traditional trip is one I adore. We started going when our daughters were young and now seeing our grandchildren loving it is the best. Our vacation club membership lasts until I am 90. God willing, I hope to still be riding the rides, and maybe seeing my great-grandchildren each having the time of their lives!

5 Ways to Get Young Kids Writing

my experience, the majority of children aren’t fans of writing. The act of putting pen to paper may be difficult, regardless of the length of the writing task, due to having to create thoughts, form sentences, and maintain flow in a written piece. Yet, writing can be a fun, joyful, and relaxing activity for kids of all ages. It is a chance to get creative, let your imagination run wild, or express your opinions on a certain topic. First, it is important to get kids writing. Helping them find this wonder at a young age and fostering its growth as the child gets older is essential. And, there are a few things to do to develop this habit in children, including these five below.

Start small – Don’t begin with writing a short story or crafting a play initially. Instead, let your child start small with constructing the grocery list or a chore list, something that is used every day to help show them the practical benefits of writing.

Take it a step further and have your child write descriptions of each item on the list to continue practicing.

Create a writing space – Designate a corner of your child’s room, a playroom, or family area and build a writing area for your young author. Fill this space with notebooks, construction paper, looseleaf paper, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, dictionaries, stickers, and other fun writing utensils. Also, let your child help choose what desk and chair they want for the corner, as well as how to decorate the walls. Maybe include a bulletin board or dry erase board

with quotes from writers, inspirations, photos, and examples of their own work. Their writing space should be a place that encourages them to write. It should also be one that is relaxing and not overwhelming or puts pressure on them.

Play word games – One drawback that some kids experience in writing is the challenge of learning sentence structure, increasing their vocabulary, and spelling words. One way to help is by playing word games to help build these skills. Create a word list each week and work with your child on the words’ meanings, roots, prefixes, suffixes, affixes, and spelling.

Practice with these words through fun quizzes and challenges. As for sentence structure, ask kids questions that produce a sentence answer. You may need to coach your child how to answer in correct sentence structure.

Choose a prompt and provide guidelines – Pulling an idea out of thin air to write about can be hard for anyone, kids or adults.

Set guidelines for your child and give them a prompt to write about. For example, they could create a short story, about 5 paragraphs long, about an apple or their pet’s day out. Or maybe it is about their hero or a family member. You can also write stories that are based on folktales, other tales, and myths. A little research may be helpful for these types of prompts. By providing your child with a direction and guidelines of how long a piece should be, you are creating structure for them to get started. However,

always encourage your child to meet and possibly exceed that structure.

Imagination is a powerful tool and can produce wonderful tales. Talk through your child’s writing with them, ask questions, and be curious about what they are writing. From there, who knows what your child will think of?

Use story maps or graphic organizers. Finally, when it comes to drafting the flow of a piece and figuring out what comes first, second, and last, it is a good idea to use a story map or graphic organizer.

There are online versions of both available for your child to use while planning out their story. Once they are done with the organizer, start writing.

There may be a few tweaks along the way, but an organizer or map will give them a general outline of where to go.

No matter what your child wrote, always publish it in some form. It may be putting their tale on the refrigerator door or turning their story into a homemade book. By showcasing their work, you are giving your kid an opportunity to realize how proud you are of them and that writing is important. Whatever you choose to do to help your child start writing, start small with creating vivid sentences and building vocabulary, then move on to paragraphs and stories.

Just remember the best thing to do is let your child write more, and often.

A Belief in Fairytales

In

the “Once upon a time” story, warnings foreshadowed what could occur when little girls and boys chose to go deep into the dark, eerie woods or talk to strange people on footpaths. Such memorable events described curses, or the immutable outcome of meeting a witch, werewolf, or other creature seeking the chance to enslave, harm, or gobble someone, anyone, up! Most stories labeled as fairytales aren’t your average happilyever-after, where ordinary girls marry the prince and live in the great castle forevermore. Although children grow up reading the same stories as their parents and grandparents, and never forgetting them, either, the shocking tales were initially intended for adults—and for a good reason!

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD Before the words come to life on a page, they begin as oral traditions, as one person takes a story to another town and retells it.

Throughout the world, the wolf has been symbolic. American children connected it to evil, while Italian stories regarded the wolf as a good, loyal protector.

In the 11th Century, a Belgian poet wrote about a red-caped girl who encountered a wolf. French writer Charles Perrault, the author of Mother Goose Tales, first published the story. Its theme delved into cannibalism and pedophilia. Did we ever inquire how the wolf consumed grandma?

Thankfully, contemporary publications did not describe how her flesh arrived in the pantry while her blood settled in wine bottles. Oh my! Red did, in fact, have a conversation with the wolf. Each time he made her discard an article of clothing, she’d ask, “What do you want me to do with my apron, or petticoat, or….?” His response was, “Throw it on the fire; you won’t need it anymore.” Then, she climbed into the bed.

SLEEPING BEAUTY Patterns are evident throughout the themes of fairytales, connecting starvation to cannibalism or murder. In the 14th century, many parents could not feed their children and decided to send them into the woods, sell them for livestock or money, or kill them. The stepmother often described through villainous acts is a jealous woman who often hurts the step-children through abuse or murder.

Readers may not recognize the title, but the story is familiar. There was Histoire de Troilus et de Zellandine in the 1300s and, and Sun, Moon,Talia in 1636. In the traditional tale, a king finds the sleeping girl and, overwhelmed by her beauty, rapes her. It is unknown whether the two children wandered into her rooms or resulted from pregnancy. Once the fragment, sucked from its location, is removed, the king becomes angry that his Sleeping Beauty awakes. Tensions increase as the king’s wife arranges three deaths, two by stew pot and the other by burning. But, of course, it doesn’t happen. Despite the brutal acts and intentionally murderous behavior, the stepmother dies, and the king lives happily ever after with Sleeping Beauty and their two children; yet, readers are left wondering whether Talia ever forgave him, and found happiness, too?

THE LITTLE MERMAID Remember Ariel, the adventure-seeking mermaid, who was curious to know about the land of men? Before Walt Disney’s animated movie in 1989, Hans Christian Andersen, a Danish writer, published the story in 1837. The girl without a name did not jump and leap, thrilled with her new land legs, but hobbled with each step in excruciating pain. She, like so many other heroines, makes a promise at the cost of her life. Rather than kill the prince, she chooses to die. In return for the selfless act, she is rewarded with 300 years to earn her soul and a chance for heaven. A far cry from the redheaded beauty who marries a prince and lives out her dream on land!

Once upon a time, Cinderella’s sister did indeed cut off her toes to squeeze into a glass slipper, and Snow White’s evil stepmother burned to death at her wedding. Yes, there are warnings to heed, and real monsters in the world. A cheer of gratitude goes to the protagonist, who lives another day and hopes that evil acts will stop. We know there are more significant threats to humanity than any creature described in a book labeled “fairy tales.” But through all stories, we reiterate to children the lessons of awareness when walking, making eye contact, or speaking to strangers, assuring a life of happilyever after!

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

Lessons from the Wild

Christopher Johnson McCandless was 25 years old when he wrote his last journal entry. His story, made into a book and movie entitled Into the Wild (streaming on Netflix), was very popular when it came out in 2007 on the big screen. When I watched the movie, back then I had nine-year-old and fiveyear-old boys. I remember the movie was inspiring to me, pointing out the simple joys of life minus all of life’s troubles and stresses. I was amazed at his insight and perseverance, not to mention his survival skills. It was another time; my view of life was through a different lens. [Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t seen it, I touch on the ending, so be forewarned.]

Watching the movie again twelve years later and having been a parent then for over twenty years, I viewed it through an updated lens. I saw someone— in my opinion—hypocritical , shallow, and insensitive to others.

Someone taking the benefits of his abundant life for granted.

Someone who spent his entire adult life trying to get back at his parents by rebelling and doing the opposite of everything he had grown up doing. He was resourceful, but his inner anger would slowly eat away at his soul and ultimately his life.

He thought he was finally living for once, seeing life the way it was meant to be seen. In reality, he was running away. There’s no question his parents had issues and their dysfunctional marriage was a negative influence on him; and in a perfect world, it would seem too difficult to bear.

But, twelve years later, I realized what a waste this was. He never got to grow up to learn his parents were just people like any others. They had their faults, weaknesses, and they made mistakes, just as he was about to do. Just because they were older didn’t make them infallible, but he didn’t see them like that. He could have if he had had time. Instead, he left them and his wealthy lifestyle behind, leaving a space inside them that would never be filled again. He selfishly didn’t realize that his life wasn’t just his own; his life impacted others just as their lives impacted him. Ironically, he would do to them what he sanctimoniously felt they had done to him, only his hurt was permanent.

In fairness, as I watched the movie, I witnessed the depiction of

his family life, and although there was wealth, it wasn’t without its fair share of drama. I saw, as the movie progressed, the extreme anguish both parents were forced to endure when their son dropped off the map, removing all traces of his existence, including his identity.

Chris was obviously extremely intelligent in the book sense. He had a crazy streak in him, part adventurer, and part immature child with rage issues against his parents, society, and politics in general. He grew to detest materialism, giving away his life savings, burning his spending money in a fire pit, and abandoning his car—not before removing and concealing the license plates first. He was on a mission to the great wilderness of Alaska.

Although it may sound that way, I truly mean no genuine disrespect to Chris or his family. I think they raised a smart, independent, strong-willed man who displayed an amazing resilience to life’s obstacles on his path to his chosen destination. Regardless of their faults, he had prevailed by graduating from college, with a future as bright as he was. But I think there are many lessons in his life to be gained, and not just the philosophical ones relating to appreciating life and the beauty and power of the present moment. Those things are easy to see, as I did in my first viewing. The things not as evident are those that only a parent would notice and understand. As much as the ending was sad, so were the lives of the parents and family he left behind.

The look on their faces, albeit as actors, was real and the pain and torment were evident in their utter despair.

As smart as he was, Chris missed what was most important.

It wasn’t the scenery of the nature he witnessed, or even the relationships he made along the way. It was what he could have accomplished in his life in its entirety. One might say, “With his book and movie hasn’t he done just that, many times over?” Not in my opinion. I would forego the movie, book, and everything else that came with it to think he survived and shared his talents and intellect throughout his lifetime with others face-to-face, instead of in a eulogy format. As intelligent as he was, he was still child-like in his understanding of human relationships and the importance of sharing his life with others.

I would prefer it had ended with him restoring his relationship with his family, as I’m sure they would have, as well.

The Halloween season is upon us, though the thousands of bags of candy have hit all the stores long before this.

With tons of sugary confections enticing us everywhere, which we view as the focus of Halloween, it’s great to have some healthy recipes in your home-menu arsenal to maintain the spooky mood of the season without adding even more sweets to your kids’ diet! These creepy/healthy dishes will have your little monsters begging for more!

WITCH FINGER COOKIES

EYEBALL PASTA INGREDIENTS:

(GF, DF)

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

¼ cup Coconut Oil, melted and cooled

2 (15-oz.) cans Mandarin Oranges

1 package Linguini Spinach Pasta (or other Green/ Spinach Pasta)

1 Egg, room temperature

1 jar Marinara or Pesto Sauce

½ tsp. Vanilla (or almond) extract

1 container Mini-Mozzarella Balls 1 can Black Olive Slices Parmesan Cheese (optional) DIRECTIONS: 1. Boil pasta according to package directions.

2. Top with marinara, or pesto pasta for an even “greener” option.

3. Press one black olive slice into a mini-mozzarella ball for an “eyeball.” If this is difficult, use a knife to cut a small shallow circle out of the mozzarella to make it easier to insert the olive slice. Place the mozzarella “eyeballs” on top of the sauce. Choose whether you’d like just two eyeballs, so the pasta is staring back at you, or lots of eyeballs for a more “monstery” effect.

CANDY CORN FRUIT PARFAIT

¼ cup Honey

3 cups Fresh Pineapple Chunks

1½ cup Almond Flour

1 cup Greek Yogurt, Vanilla or Coconut flavor

½ tsp. Baking Soda

Candy Corn for garnish

3 Tbsp. Coconut Flour ½ tsp. Cinnamon

½ tsp. Pink Himalayan Salt Slivered Almonds

Raspberry (or Strawberry) Jam TOPPING:

2 Tbsp. Turbinado Sugar (sugar in the raw) ¼ tsp. Cinnamon DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large bowl, whisk all wet ingredients together until well combined.

2. Add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

3. Preheat the oven to 350°.

4. Place dough mixture in the fridge for 5-10 minutes (Do not skip this step).

5. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or silicone mat.

After dough has cooled, take roughly 1 tablespoon of dough and roll out into a “bumpy finger-like” log with your fingers spread wide apart. Place onto cookie sheet. Repeat until no dough is remaining. Makes about 25-30 “fingers.”

Press slivered almonds firmly into the tips of the “finger” cookies to resemble fingernails. With a spoon, add creases to the “knuckles.”

6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, careful not to burn. Remove and let cool. Serve with jam as a “bloody” cookie dip.

DIRECTIONS: 1. In 6 decorative parfait or wine glasses, layer the fresh pineapple on the bottom, topped with the mandarin oranges.

2. Top with yogurt.

3. Add a few candy corn kernels on top for garnish, just before serving.
