ay always brings a fresh wave of gratitude—and this year, even more so!

With Mother’s Day coming up, I’ve been reflecting on how lucky I am to be surrounded by so many incredible moms. Watching my close friends raise their little ones with so much love, patience, and strength is seriously inspiring. Toddlerhood looks intense—but somehow they make it look fun, and full of joy (and maybe a little chaos, too!). Y’all are rockstars, and I’m in awe of you every day.

I’d be remiss not to give a special shoutout to my own amazing mom.

She’s not only been the best role model, but I get to work with her every single day—and I truly couldn’t love it more. And as some of you know… wedding month is here!

Gavin and I are tying the knot on May 31st, and we’re beyond excited.

It’s a simple, private ceremony with just immediate family—but we’ll be celebrating with everyone afterward in a fun and casual way that feels just right for us.

STORYTIME with Thanks to an exciting partnership between Piedmont Opera and The Ginther Group, children in the Piedmont Triad will have a unique opportunity to experience the magic of opera in a whole new way! Through the Storytime with Piedmont Opera program, kids can meet an opera singer who reads an engaging children's book at their local library, school, bookstore, or daycare.

STORYTIME with PIEDMONT OPERA is a dynamic outreach initiative that Storytime with Piedmont Opera connects local Piedmont Opera singers with existing storytime locations to introduce young children and their families to the world of opera in a comfortable and fun-filled way.

Through interactive storytelling, the program helps nurture creativity, spark imaginations, and inspire the next generation.

At each event, a Piedmont Opera singer reads a thoughtfully chosen book from the organization’s specially curated children’s library—titles such as “Bantam of the Opera,” “Mozart Finds a Melody,” and “Bravo! Brava!” are just a few of the featured stories.

Following the reading, the singer offers a demonstration of their operatic voice, providing children with an up-close look at the art form and what it’s like to be an opera singer. To round out the experience, attendees are invited to ask questions and meet the singer in a familiar, friendly atmosphere.

In addition to reaching young audiences, this program creates valuable performance opportunities for local opera singers who bring their talent and passion for music back to the community allowing the artists to engage with a young audience in a special and meaningful way.

INTERNATIONAL TEA DAY: Steeped in Culture and Unity

In 2005, trade unions and small tea growers in civil societies (Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Uganda, Nepal, Kenya and Indonesia) began the International Tea Day movement as a way to help ensure fair prices and living wages for tea workers worldwide. Fourteen years later, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated May 21st as International Tea Day to commemorate the long history and deep cultural, economic and health benefits of tea. This day also spotlights the importance of sustainable tea production and consumption to help reduce extreme poverty, fight hunger and empower women who account for approximately 70% of the coffee work force. As you sip your favorite brew, give a silent shout out to the 13 million people around the globe who make every cup possible. To show appreciation for the enjoyment that the simple pleasure of having a cup of tea brings...a toast to tea!

SIP, SIP HOORAY!

The origins of tea date back more than 5,000 years to China. Legend has it that the servant of Shen Nung, a Chinese ruler and herbalist, was boiling a pot of water when some leaves blew in from a nearby wild tea tree. Nung found the smell to be pleasing, so he tasted the (accidental) infusion, found it refreshing and named it “ch’a” meaning “to inquire.” The rest is history.

Other than water, tea is the world’s oldest and most consumed beverage, with an impressive five billion cups of tea served each day.

Since tea cultivation is an ancient process, it makes sense that countries most commonly thought of as tea producers would be China, Japan and India, but in actuality, tea is grown all around the world, including the US. The Charleston Tea Garden on Wadmalaw Island is the only large-scale commercial tea plantation in the United States, but there are plenty of smaller tea growers in the southern states, and just up the road a bit, Maryland’s Heron’s Meadow Farm has enjoyed tea farming success for the past decade (from tea plants purchased from a North Carolina nursery). Climate, geographical location, altitude and soil all play a role in the quality of leaves on the tea plant, and different regions lend themselves to different types of tea. As it turns out, volcanic soil in Hawaii is ideal for growing all types of tea and, due to the moderate climate and lots of rain, tea plants thrive in Oregon and Washington, too.

FROM LEAF TO CUP There are approximately 1,500 tea varieties in the world but only four basic types of tea.

Believe it or not, they are all derived from the same plant – Camellia sinensis, a species of evergreen shrub. One of the major differentiating factors between the four types of tea is the degree of oxidation that it undergoes. Black tea is fully oxidized which gives it a darker color. Oolong tea is semioxidized with an oxidation level of 30-80%.

Green tea is less oxidized than black and oolong teas, so it retains more of its natural color. And, white tea (when brewed it is actually pale yellow) is minimally processed and harvested from the first buds of the plant that are covered in fine white hairs, “hao.”

flowers) is not truly tea – it is labeled as such because of the way it is generally steeped.

From ancient rituals to modern tea rooms, tea has been a cornerstone of many civilizations, shaping traditions and daily life across the continents. Around the world, teatime is a coveted time of the day that provides a moment of relaxation and fosters connection with friends and family. A few global teatime practices: •

China: China has a deep-rooted tea culture with traditions like the gongfu tea ceremony that emphasizes a moment of respect and hospitality.

India: Known for masala chai, a spiced tea blend made with milk and sugar, symbolizing hospitality, friendship and togetherness.

Japan: Japanese tea ceremony, or chanoyu, is a centuries-old ritual, focusing on harmony, respect and tranquility.

Morocco: Mint tea is a brewed blend of green tea, fresh mint leaves and a lot of sugar; symbol of hospitality.

Korea: Green tea is often served with traditional Korean sweets; an important part of social gatherings as a symbol of unity and friendship.

Argentina: Yerbe mate is a traditional tea consumed from a hollowed-out gourd and symbolizes friendship, community and hospitality.

YMCA REACH Center at Winston Lake

Opening soon in the same space as the Winston Lake Family YMCA, the new YMCA REACH Center at Winston Lake will be a bustling hub of community spirit and camaraderie.

This transformative idea grew from the vision of city leaders to better serve the East Winston community, while also addressing disparities that include educational challenges and healthcare concerns. Community collaboration has driven the project, which officially began renovations in July of 2024 and will conclude Phase 1 of its changes with a ribbon cutting and open house on Wednesday, May 14th.

The YMCA REACH Center – which stands for Resources for Economic Development, Academics and Community Health – will create a centralized location where neighbors can access the day-to-day resources they need.

The Center will combine the values and mission of the YMCA with the strengths and incredible resources of Novant Health and Goodwill Industries.

Executive Director Kenneth Pettigrew shares that if all our neighbors are thriving, with the tools to build a self-determined life, the entire community reaps those benefits.

“Our partnerships with Novant Health and Goodwill (along with others, including Forsyth Tech, Financial Pathways of the

Piedmont, Second Harvest Food Bank and more) are related to our commitment to the holistic health of our community, particularly in areas where divestment and underinvestment have long hindered outcomes in health, education and economic mobility. Coupling workforce development and educational support with existing YMCA programs and new opportunities offered by our partners, is an opportunity to impact generational change,” he explains.

The REACH Center is located in a federally designated Health Care Provider Shortage Area, which means residents have difficulty accessing necessary care for chronic and acute health challenges.

“Novant Health’s services are a step towards removing barriers to access for our neighbors and will directly contribute to increased positive health outcomes in an area where life expectancy is six years shorter than other areas in Forsyth County,” Pettigrew adds.

He also explains the renovation is a testament to how we use the good space we have.

“The physical footprint of the building did not change, but the experience within it has shifted. One of the most exciting changes is the new lobby, which we refer to as the ‘community living room.’ The space has doubled in size from the original lobby and will have comfortable furniture for gathering and relationship building.”

Other new amenities will include a Novant Health primary services care clinic, renovated childcare facilities, multi-purpose classrooms that can

What if we could flip the script about food for our children?

In a culture that often promotes diet fads laced with poor nutrition, it’s no surprise that many adults struggle to have a healthy, balanced relationship with food. For many, intuitive and mindful eating is something they only discover later in life, often through therapy or after years of trying to escape unhealthy habits.

Today’s parents and guardians are approaching eating with more mindfulness than ever with a desire to help their children grow into confident, intuitive eaters who feel empowered rather than confused at mealtime.

NURTURING THE NORM OF MINDFUL EATING IS CRUCIAL

How we approach food in our daily lives has a substantial impact on how our kids view what and how much they eat. A Cambridge University study shared that research consistently shows that children who are raised with a balanced, nonrestrictive approach to food have healthier eating habits in adulthood. They are less likely to engage in disordered eating behaviors, such as binge eating, emotional eating or restrictive dieting.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), 20 million women and 10 million men in the United States will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. Additionally, the CDC reports that nearly one in five children in the US is affected by obesity. Meanwhile, body dissatisfaction starts as early as age six with many children already expressing concerns about their body size or shape.

HERE ARE THREE PRINCIPLES TO EMBRACE AS YOU RAISE INTUITIVE EATERS:

Meditation MEANINGFUL

FOOD NEUTRALITY 1 TEACH Instead of labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” teach

your children that all foods serve different purposes.

Prioritize your vocabulary around food to be surrounding the nutrition benefits of food like providing energy, helping growth and staying full longer. Vegetables aren’t inherently “good” while ice cream is “bad” – different foods hold different roles within our diet.

Model this mindset in how you choose to speak about food. Try to replace phrases you’ve probably grown up hearing like “I was bad today” due to eating sweets with “I’m choosing this ____ because it sounds delicious right now” or “I’m in the mood for something fresh and energizing.” This helps eliminate shame or guilt around specific foods and instead gain an understanding of how to fuel their body.

INTO HUNGER CUES 2 TUNE Learning how to understand what your body is telling you is a key factor to becoming an intuitive and healthy eater. Helpful prompts can help children identify what hunger truly feels like. Try asking questions like “Is your tummy saying it’s hungry?” or “Is your body telling you it’s ready for lunch?”

Help build trust in themselves and their bodies by allowing kids to choose how much to eat or when. Concentrate on honoring your child’s hunger cues and fullness cues by not focusing on if their plate is “empty” and more on their ability to determine if they are satisfied.

A MEALTIME ENVIRONMENT 3 CREATE Distracted eating is one of the root causes of unhealthy habits around nutrition. Mealtimes as children should feel enjoyable and relaxed. It’s proven that kids who experience positive mealtimes rather than stressful ones develop healthier relationships with eating. Try to set similar mealtime routines thinking about the time of day meals and snacks will take place as well as what kind of environment you want to build.

Not every eating experience will have the same level of control, but the majority of their mealtimes will give them the foundation in which they will build upon. Do your meals start with a prayer or reflective question? Do you eliminate distractions like screens or sounds? Is there ample time to eat their meal and listen to their own fullness cues?

CREATING PRACTICES THAT LAST A LIFETIME

Mindful and intuitive eating isn’t a childhood or adolescent habit – it’s a lifelong skill. When you take intentional time to nurture the mindset around food and nutrition in your child, you help them become confident in their food choices, in tune with their own body and resilient against negative diet culture.

Ultimately, you are creating adults who know how to listen to their needs and truly care for themselves.

ince stepping in as owner of Simply Southern Cuisine in 2006, Lisa Miller has always held a vision for the much-loved Clemmons business close to her heart. Those plans include not only the deliciousness of their legendary comfort food, but also the necessary growth of their welcoming retail space!

Those expansion plans have been constantly evolving, with a brand new sign and spacious walk-in freezer taking center stage as this past year’s refresh. Spring is in full swing with an abundance of new produce sprouting, including tomato vines growing strong in preparation for their upcoming first harvest! But, as we wait for those first tomatoes, we can enjoy spring onions, early zucchini, cucumbers, fennel, endive, asparagus, bell peppers, artichokes, avocado, arugula, celery, cauliflower, leeks and peas. Looking down the fruit aisle, you’ll notice cherries, nectarines, plums, raspberries, strawberries, grapefruit, mangoes, limes, cantaloupe and blackberries at their peak.

PASSION FRUIT & MANGO NATURE’S GATORADE PREP. TIME: 10 MINUTES | TOTAL TIME: 10 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS

10 oz Coconut Water 1 cup Mango, fresh or frozen 2 Passionfruits or ½ cup frozen Juice of 1 lime or lemon Maple syrup to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Blend the coconut water, lime juice and mango until smooth.

2. If you prefer it to be slushy-like and are using all fresh ingredients, add ½ cup – 1 cup ice cubes to blend.

3. Stir in the passionfruit (if using fresh). Blend if using frozen.

4. Add maple syrup to taste. Enjoy!

Spring

is making its presence known in our area! Leaves are appearing on trees which have been bare for months. Flowering bulbs are emerging from underground. The temperature feels wonderful, and there is plenty of daylight to enjoy. And, the birds are singing! It might as well be a Disney movie!

So, what is this scientific marvel we know as spring?

A big part of spring's appeal lies in the experience of increased sunlight, which boosts mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, and encourages social interactions and new beginnings. In fact, plants and trees respond to light cues indicating that they know spring has arrived.

Like humans, plants have circadian rhythms.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the science behind spring's allure:

SPRING AND NEW BEGINNINGS Spring is a time of rebirth and growth in nature, with plants emerging from their long winter's nap and animals emerging from hibernation. Spring can bring about feelings of hope, anticipation and a longing for fresh starts. And, the warmer weather and longer days encourage people to spend more time outdoors, leading to increased social interactions and opportunities for connection.

Some studies suggest that people may experience an increase in romantic attraction during spring due to more daylight hours and warmer weather, which can boost hormone levels. Cue the romantic music!

THE SCIENCE OF SPRING IN NATURE Spring flowers such as tulips, hyacinths and daffodils grow from bulbs. Bulbs are miniature plants and contain food storage systems to provide everything the plant

needs to survive through the winter. When the bulb receives signals that spring has arrived, it is able to produce roots, stems, leaves and flowers. Temperature is what causes spring bulbs to bloom.

WHAT CAUSES THE SMELL OF FRESHLY CUT GRASS? While walking through the neighborhood, it's always a pleasure to enjoy the smell of freshly cut grass. It’s such a distinctive smell, and I have to admit I was a little bummed to find out the cause of the scent. It is actually a "distress signal" from the plant, a complex mixture of chemicals called green leaf volatiles (GLVs) released when the grass is damaged or cut. Poor grass...but you sure do smell good!

GLVs play a role in plant communication and defense against herbivores (plant-eating insects). The release of GLVs can act as a warning signal to other plants and animals, potentially attracting predators of herbivores or alerting nearby plants to prepare for defense. Pretty fascinating.

BIRDS RETURN FROM THEIR WINTER VACATIONS AND BABY ANIMALS GREET THE WORLD IN SPRING

There’s no better indicator of spring than birds chirping. Many animals migrate south during the winter, then head north as temperatures rise outside. This northward migration can start in mid-February and last into June, which means that throughout the spring, you can expect to see a major increase in birds. In 2017, a UK study found that the more birds people could see in their neighborhoods, the better their mental health.

Many animals reproduce in the spring, when temperatures increase and food is in abundance. Baby ducklings, squirrels, bunnies and other sweet creatures appear in spring.

Who doesn’t feel happier when they see baby animals frolicking outside their window?

IMPROVED SLEEP

Studies show that light exposure during the day is related to better sleep quality which, in turn, affects mood and overall health – one of the best reasons to love spring!

Sunlight triggers your body to

produce vitamin D, which keeps your bones strong. It’s harder to get enough sun exposure naturally to maintain healthy vitamin D levels during the winter. People only need 10 minutes outside with a quarter of their bodies exposed to the spring sunshine to get an adequate daily dose of vitamin D.

With summer around the corner, there is no better way to start the grilling season than with smoked cheeseburgers!

Set your smoker to 250-275 degrees. While the smoker is heating up, grab a pound of ground beef and season the meat with your favorite beef rub.

Place the patties on the smoker, and let them cook for about an hour and a half. I usually smoke them until they reach an internal temperature of 150 to 155 degrees.

The patties will have a reddish color to them. Don’t worry, they are done but the color is from the smoke penetrating the meat.

I topped these with Kinder’s BBQ sauce, Colby Jack cheese, onion rings, lettuce and used a brioche bun to finish it off.

“CBCT improves diagnostic accuracy by providing high-resolution 3D images and is crucial for evaluating surgical planning (for the jaw and teeth), orthodontic assessment (including dental extractions and teeth exposures), TAD placement, orthodontic appliance placement, evaluation of teeth anatomy (including root resorption and dental pathology) and growth observation. Early and accurate diagnosis can prevent complications and reduce the need for more invasive procedures. Salem Smiles is also able to provide in-house aligners for select orthodontic cases that allow for lower cost treatment than traditional big-box suppliers like Invisalign. If you have a teen or young adult about to graduate high school or college, you are likely in the midst of a lot of chaos. My oldest daughter is graduating high school this month, and it seems like anytime we check something off the checklist, something else pops up.

One of those many items is planning a graduation party. Here are a few ideas and tips I’ve picked up along the way. I hope they help you in your graduation party planning!

UTILIZE ELECTRONIC INVITATIONS

Save yourself the money, time and stress of paper invitations. I used Evite, and it was so easy. Plus, it’s much easier to track head counts, and people are more likely to RSVP that way.

INCORPORATE COLLEGE COLORS

If your high school senior is college bound, instead of incorporating high school colors into your decor and desserts, embrace their future and use their chosen college colors instead.

INCLUDE YOUR GRADUATE

Instead of doing all the planning and decor yourself, get their help, ideas and suggestions. They likely have some and, as the guest of honor, should get to have some say! They know they graduated, so it’s not like this needs to be a surprise party!

KEEP IT SIMPLE

With the unlimited ideas and resources on social media and Google, it’s tempting to try to do it all. Do yourself a favor and keep it simple. This advice applies to everything from the decorations and food to the guest list and location.

INCORPORATE THE SEASON

As graduations always happen in May or June, the weather here is always warm. So, consider outside activities and games or even a pool party for your graduation party.

Little Actors Theatre Summer Camps at The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem When is a better time for children to expand their creativity and develop theatre skills alongside their peers than summer? Little Actors Theatre Summer Camps at The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem offer a variety of activities and specialized camps for your child to explore. Each camp is thoughtfully designed to help children build essential life skills such as confidence, communication, teamwork and creativity. In addition to growing their skills, campers will form lifelong friendships, creating meaningful and supportive connections with their peers.

The Little Actors Theatre Summer Camps emphasize theatre education throughout all programs. Campers are encouraged to express their creativity through interactive games, storytelling, and character-building activities while celebrating their individuality. Through theatre games, scene work and improvisation, students will develop public speaking skills and gain confidence. The camps provide a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their imaginations, act out their dreams and collaborate with others.

Team-building activities help campers improve adaptability and problemsolving skills while the screen-free camp environment fosters hands-on engagement and lasting friendships.

A VARIETY OF CAMPS FOR EVERY CHILD

The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem offers numerous programs to fit each child’s interests and aspirations.

Make a Scene (Grades K-4) – Campers will explore all aspects of a scene, including costuming, character development, set design and storytelling. A final showcase will be performed at the end of camp.

Creating a Character (Grades K-4 and 5-10) – Young actors will bring heroic, monstrous and villainous fairytale characters to life, culminating in a character showcase.

Specialty Camps – Focused programs such as Battle of Wits, Dreams to Stage, Sketch Comedy, Let’s Laugh, My Story Time and Intro to Improv allow students to dive deeper into specific areas of interest.

Summer Youth Productions – Campers in Beetlejuice JR. (Grades 8-12) and The Jungle Book Kids (Grades 3-7) will go through a full audition process, rehearsals and a final performance at the end of their session.

All summer camps run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with before-care available from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and after-care from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Performances take place at the end of each week.

Encouraging creativity is essential for helping children adapt, innovate, and invent.

At Camp Sawtooth, creativity, arts, and hands-on activities blend seamlessly to provide an unforgettable experience for everyone! Your child will enjoy a summer filled with discovery, expression, and boundless imagination in these interactive classes.

Each week from June 2 through July 25, morning (9:00 a.m. – noon) and afternoon (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) camp classes are offered for ages 6-8, 9-11 and 12-16.

Offerings are split by week and then into morning and afternoon sessions, providing a unique summer flexibility for families. Campers can participate for one week, one month, or all summer long!

In today’s world, a local, family

owned business that’s 45 years old and going strong makes a big statement!

Yes, for 45 years, Salem Gymnastics & Swim has been teaching the sport of gymnastics, most recently adding lifesaving swim lessons and a brand new Ninja program.

In 1980, Frank and Barbara Minter, having two daughters that were gymnasts, decided to open Salem Gymnastics. It started in the poultry building on the fairgrounds in WinstonSalem. Six months later, the business relocated to a larger facility on Margaret Street. As the company grew, Frank and Barbara included other family members in the ownership and operations. Their oldest daughter, Beth Morphis, a collegiate gymnast, started coaching. She learned the ins and outs of the business and became co-owner with her father. Beth’s late husband, Kenny, was also the competitive team head coach for many years.

In 2001, Salem Gymnastics moved to its current location on Country Club Road. While temporarily adding other programs such as karate and dance, it was gymnastics that started the business and what Salem did best. In 2016, everything changed!

After a non-fatal drowning involving Beth and Kenny’s daughter, adding a swim school teaching lifesaving swim lessons became a reality. Salem Gymnastics became Salem Gymnastics & Swim!

Everything that Salem does is centered around their mission “to Grow Confident children that Love to Move.” The core values at Salem are Quality, Safety, Inclusion, Relationships & Smiles. Salem’s goal is to be around for another 100 years.

In 2020, the pandemic forced businesses to pivot in ways they never had. When schools didn’t return to in-person learning, Salem launched Active Academy. Elementary aged children were able to be in person, complete their online learning and participate in valuable physical exercise. Almost 15 kindergarteners started their elementary education at Salem Gymnastics & Swim!

During COVID, Salem retained their employees due to the generosity of the owners and financial support of customers in a time of uncertainty for everyone. As restrictions lifted, Salem slowly came back to life greeting kids with loving smiles (albeit from behind a mask) and high fives!

Since 2020, the company has experienced lots of changes. In 2022, Kenny Morphis – former co-owner and team head coach passed away.

The following year, Frank Minter gave the torch of business ownership to his daughters. Susan Loper joined Beth in ownership, and the dynamic duo is set to ensure that Salem Gymnastics & Swim continues to be a premier sports activity option for children. Along with changes in ownership, a lot more has happened at Salem in the last five years:

Enrollments have increased from 1,500 to 2,500.

•

Total staff numbers have grown from less than 50 employees to 100+.

•

A building expansion project will be completed

by May 2025.

•

Camps now include formal gymnastics, swim and ninja classes.

•

The addition of a brand NEW Ninja program for boys and girls.

Salem is thrilled to soon complete the current building expansion. This additional 7,400 square feet will provide more dedicated space for recreational gymnastics classes, the AAU girls team and the USAG Boys and Girls teams. It will also give dedicated space to the brand new Ninja Program. Our new ninja program allows children the ability to jump, flip, twist and climb without the formality of gymnastics. Ninja is a great strength and agility building alternative for boys and girls.

Mark Your Calendars: On August 17th, Salem will host a Salem Sampler event, open to the public where, at no cost, people can try a sample swim lesson, gymnastics class or ninja class. Sign-ups to try a class will be required before the event. There will be tours of the facility and staff available to answer questions. If families register for classes that day, they will be entered to win one free month of tuition.

It’s Almost Go Time, Mama: Being the mom of a graduating senior who is headed to college is no joke. All of the “lasts” and all of the “firsts” combine to leave us feeling overwhelmed, emotional and completely unprepared.

As a mom who has endured the sendingoff-your-first-born-to-college time, I truly understand where you are. I see you, and I feel your pain.

SEE IT THROUGH THEIR EYES

Right now, your job is to get your senior ready for this lifechanging transition, and the most important takeaways to understand are – your parenting job is nowhere near completion, and you are needed now (more than ever) to ensure your future college student feels supported.

Look at this transition from your senior’s perspective – they are facing the scariest and most exciting move of their lives. They are terrified (even if they seem confident), and they are constantly worrying (about making friends, what they’ll eat, if they’ll get homesick, etc.). When you step away from your own worries, you can more clearly see theirs.

Perspective is everything, especially when we are required to find more patience in our parenting.

SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

We tend to sell college to kids as “the best time of your life” proclaiming, “you’ll meet your best friends! Your bridesmaids!” This is entirely unfair because life is life wherever you land. I see kids who are set up for failure because they arrive at their colleges and are immediately disappointed because they have difficulty making friends and feel homesick.

Remind your senior that college is just the next four years of life. And, we adults know that life is just life.

My favorite reminder for graduating seniors is, “Wherever you go, there you are.” Your hopes, dreams, fears and insecurities follow you (wherever you go) and will not magically disappear once you change locations.

Helping your senior understand that life is life will help them to take a breath and stop putting so much pressure on themselves to create a perfectly curated college experience.

How to Support Your Senior Heading to College

PROVIDE STABILITY, MORE THAN EVER Your job is to provide stability, unconditional support and reassurance. When your senior pushes you away, that’s when they need you the most. Remember those tough middle school days when you wondered why you decided to become a parent in the first place?

I’m talking about THAT level of stability. A patient and calm presence ensures they are heard and understood.

Having one foot in college and one foot still at home, they are living in two places, which is confusing, overwhelming and causes mood swings. Tell them it’s normal and understandable that they’re feeling disoriented and emotional. We all know what it’s like to live “on the fence,” and that is their current reality. Ask them how it feels. Let them talk. Do not interject. Do not judge. They need to feel heard.

Remain engaged. If they refuse to open up, you can say, “I get it – sometimes I need space, too. I’m here if you need me.” Do not give up!

EVERYONE’S TIMELINE IS DIFFERENT: THAT’S OKAY Your senior might be “Little Miss I’m Ready to Move In,” who has her dorm room designed, purchased and linens already washed, or you might have “Mr. I Don’t Care,” who shows up on day one with a bed-in-a-bag and two bath towels (that you packed). Seniors will get ready when they are ready. Yes, it is beyond frustrating (I’ve been there with my oldest).

But, you have to let go and let them figure it out.

Remember, they aren’t getting ready because they aren’t ready yet! Don’t compare your senior’s progress to someone else’s. That will drive you insane. Ironically, your child might be the one who was always “Miss Goes First,” and now she’s not even turning in her assignments. It happens – she’s just not ready, so don’t push her. What’s the worst case scenario?

She calls the third day in and says, “MOM, I need lamps! I need extra pillows!” You hop online, order and have it delivered. She figured out what she needed, and it was her idea. You are actually the winner in this situation.

YOU’VE GOT THIS, SWEET MAMA

Creating a stable space where your senior feels comfortable being open and honest provides a solid foundation for their future success. Understanding their perspective, setting realistic expectations, not comparing their timeline to others and remembering that your parenting is more important now than ever before will ensure that you are providing the best parenting possible. You will endure, I promise.

Kids That It’s Okay to Breaking the Stigma: Teaching Talk About Mental Health

Kids experience big emotions, just like we do, and it’s important to create a home where mental health is a normal and safe topic. By opening up the conversation early, you can teach kids that their emotions matter and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

HOW TO NORMALIZE MENTAL HEALTH DISCUSSIONS AT HOME

A great first step to breaking the stigma is making mental health a natural part of daily life by talking about feelings regularly. You can do this by: •

Sharing your own emotions with your children in a way they can absorb and process.

You can say things like, “I’m feeling a little overwhelmed today. When I feel this way, I like to take a deep breath and relax for a minute.”

You can also express when you’re feeling angry but maintain a calm tone. Allowing your children to see how you properly handle every emotion can help them open up when they feel those emotions, too.

•

Encouraging your children to check in with themselves. You can guide them to do daily check-ins or reflections so they are aware of their emotions.

•

Use activities the family already enjoys as conversation starters like books, movies or TV shows. If a character is sad or frustrated, you can ask, “What do you think they’re feeling?

Have you ever felt that way?”

When kids see emotions being acknowledged and discussed openly, they learn that it’s normal to talk about how they feel.

PHRASES YOU CAN USE TO ENCOURAGE OPENNESS

Sometimes kids don’t open up because they don’t know how or they fear being judged. Here are some simple phrases that create a safe space for honest conversations: •

“It’s okay to feel sad, mad or worried. Your feelings are valid.”

•

“You don’t have to keep this to yourself. I’m here for you.”

•

“You’re not in trouble for feeling this way. Let’s talk more about it.”

•

“I love you no matter what, and I want to help you work through this.”

These words reassure them that their emotions are valid and that they won’t be criticized for expressing how they feel.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

Your children will learn by watching how you conduct yourself. If they see you being open about emotions, they’ll be more likely to do the same. Model self care by taking time to rest, meditate or journal, and they will see these habits as healthy ways to cope in difficult times.

And, don’t exclude them from your coping and healing process if you find a healthy and age-appropriate way to talk about your feelings.

There will be times you have to lean on a friend, therapist or family member, and showing them that asking for help is normal will help them combat so many things that could materialize into mental illness later on.

Through your actions, make sure they know that seeking support is the best thing to do.

WHEN IT’S OUT OF YOUR CONTROL

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may notice your child is struggling in ways that go beyond what you can help with at home. If you see signs of persistent anxiety, depression or dramatic changes in behavior, seeking professional support may be the best course of action. Let your child know our brains can get physically sick just like any other organ in our body and that getting help from a counselor or therapist isn’t a punishment or anything of which to be ashamed.

Breaking the stigma around mental health starts at home. By creating a space where emotions are valued, encouraging open discussions and leading by example, you can help your child grow into a confident, emotionally healthy individual. No one should struggle alone, so instill in them that it’s okay to ask for help.

Soak Up Art and Sun

in the Innovative Artivity on the Green Park May’s hidden gem is not so hidden location-wise as it’s in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem. But, it’s often overlooked or still unknown to those who don’t venture downtown often.

Embracing spring, I want to share this outdoor hidden gem that will quickly grow to one of your favorite spots in Winston-Salem.

Artivity on the Green is a park and outdoor art exhibit all in one.

ART AND INNOVATION INTERSECT & COME TO LIFE Artivity on the Green celebrates 10 years this May! It originated as an Art For Art’s Sake (AFAS) project that expands the Winston-Salem arts district and connects to the city’s Innovation Quarter.

No detail was too small in designing this park.

It all links back to artistic expression and the city’s history.

The staggering red towers signify the different levels of the R.J. Reynolds building, which is now home to Kimpton Cardinal Hotel. Six red lines on the ground indicate different entrances to the park and all intersect at the towers. Not only are the towers visually pleasing and tie into Winston-Salem architecture, from April to October, they also mist every half hour from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

On one end of the park sits a beautiful structure that serves as a bandstand for concerts and performances. The design itself is a tribute to music since the seven steel ribbons that make it up each represent the notes of a musical octave.

While not being a host to entertainment, the bandstand is a great place to sit and relax or enjoy a meal. Plus, the ribbons at each end are whisper dashes. If two people sit at each end, they can whisper into them and still hear each other. Some of the ribbons feature seats at the bottom and others have weasels.

Another wonderful artistic landscaping component is the retaining wall that is home to multiple murals.

While you might think of visiting a park when it is sunny, this is a good rainy day destination as there are designs on the sidewalk that are only visible when wet. So, grab an umbrella and stroll there to see all these hidden pieces of art.

Finally, this is also a nighttime destination. Not only for the entertainment there but to see the bandstand and towers light up in a variety of colors, as well.

One great thing about this park is its very manageable size and the fact that you can travel around it via train! It’s not huge but is also big enough to hold tons to do. It’s one of those theme parks that is perfect for families with younger kids.

In addition to the rides, dining and live entertainment, there are also fun activities like gold panning, gem mining and arcade games. If you visit, do not miss the Wild West Train Adventure.

Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park

BOOK FERRET

Located in Sherwood Plaza Shopping Center, Book Ferret sells new and used books. Wondering about the name?

The owner chose the name, and their mascot, Finneas the Ferret (like all his ancestor and relative ferrets), hunts, but for books instead of rabbits!

In addition to selling books, they host events including a book club at the shop. They also sell puzzles, games and “bookish gifts.”

A Look at Well-Known Celtic Symbols and Their Meanings

The ancient Celts, who originated from Central Europe, were deeply spiritual people who used symbols to show ideas about life, nature and religion. These mysterious symbols have endured through the ages and remain a significant part of Celtic culture which is commonly known as the areas of Ireland, Scotland and Wales among other places. Many of these designs were found in ancient manuscripts, carved into stone and used in modern jewelry and artwork. But, do you know the meaning of symbols such as the Trinity Knot, the Claddagh or the Celtic Knot? Let’s explore the history behind these prominent Celtic symbols.

THE TRIQUETRA (TRINITY KNOT)

The Triquetra, also known as the Trinity Knot, is one of the most recognized Celtic symbols. It consists of three interwoven loops with no beginning or end, representing eternity. The symbol is often associated with the concept of triplicity which was sacred in Celtic belief. It has been interpreted to represent the elements of Earth, air and water; the stages of life (birth, life and death); or the Holy Trinity in Christian traditions.

THE TRISKELION (TRIPLE SPIRAL)

The Triskelion, or triple spiral, is another important symbol in Celtic culture. Found in ancient artifacts and sacred sites, such as Newgrange in Ireland, this symbol represents motion and progress. It is thought to symbolize the cycle of life, personal growth and the connection between the spiritual and physical realms. The three spirals are often linked to land, sea and sky or the three Celtic goddesses of war: Badb, Macha and Morrigan.

THE CLADDAGH

The Claddagh is a symbol of love, loyalty and friendship. It consists of two hands holding a heart topped with a crown. The hands represent friendship, the heart signifies love and the crown stands for loyalty.

THE CELTIC KNOT

Celtic knots are endless loops that have no start or finish, symbolizing eternity and interconnectedness.

Different variations of these knots have been found in ancient manuscripts like the Book of Kells. They are often associated with themes of love, faith, life and death.

THE CELTIC CROSS

The Celtic Cross is a blend of Christian and pagan symbolism. It features a cross with a circle at its center, symbolizing the unification of the physical and spiritual worlds. The four arms of the cross may represent the elements (Earth, air, fire and water) or the cardinal directions. This symbol is often found in Irish cemeteries and religious sites.

THE SHAMROCK

The Shamrock, a three-leafed clover, is one of the most well-known Irish symbols. It was believed to have been used by St. Patrick to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. In Celtic tradition, it also symbolizes good luck and was associated with the number three which was considered sacred.

THE HARP

The Celtic Harp is a significant symbol of Irish heritage and is one of the oldest musical instruments associated with Celtic culture. It represents tradition, music and national identity. Today, it is used as a national emblem of Ireland and can be seen on Irish currency and government symbols.

Celtic symbols hold deep historical and spiritual significance, connecting the past with the present. Whether representing love, strength, eternity or the mysteries of life, these symbols continue to be cherished and incorporated into modern culture. Their meanings serve as a reminder of the rich heritage and enduring wisdom of the Celtic people.

3. Downtown Salisbury – From historic theaters to the impressive Bell Tower Green Park, you won’t want to miss strolling this area. Don’t forget to grab a nationally famous hot dog or burger at Hap’s Grill.

Salisbury, home of Cheerwine, is packed full of history, culture, great food and outdoor adventure. It’s one of those places that you will want to visit regularly!

4. New Sarum Brewing – This brewery has great beers, fun entertainment & events, and is family and dog friendly!

AMERICA’S IDEAL SMALL TOWN

While the “big city” is always fun to visit, about halfway between WinstonSalem and Charlotte on 85 sits Salisbury. This small town packs a big punch when it comes to charm, things to do and family friendly vibes.

As Salisbury is the birthplace of Cheerwine, it’s only fitting that they host an annual Cheerwine Festival! It’s popular not only for all the fun that it offers but there are also no entrance fees.

If you want to skip the drive and traffic on 85, consider taking the train. You can go out of High Point, and one of the Amtrak stops is in Salisbury. Best of all, a coach ticket between the two destinations is only about $10 per person!

What does the festival entail? Food, local vendors, a beer garden, live music, kids’ activities and Cheerwine, of course.

Be sure to purchase some Cheerwine merch to always remember the trip and festival.

In that time, families may celebrate spring break, holidays and school coming to an end. It’s a beautiful time if a family knows how to enjoy the season. If not, it can become another moment that passes too quickly. Growing up, this was a time to clean the house from top to bottom (aka spring cleaning), but that only took about a week. So, what is one to do during the spring? Well, aside from taking a reliable allergy pill, creating a springtime bucket list could be a great way to ensure that the entire family enjoys this season.

If your family is saving for a nice summer vacation, it can be easy to dismiss a spring family bucket list by thinking that the items will be costly. However, that is the furthest from the truth.

Bucket lists can include free events, low cost events, as well as some pricier events, if that’s what a group chooses. What is great about a bucket list is that each family can decide what to do. Below are some bucket list ideas that fit into various budgets. There are even some suggestions that cost zero dollars. Here are some suggestions of items to do as a family for a spring bucket list.

It’s a Grand Grand Life Spring Break and Suddenly Summer

As a grandparent, I am already beginning to see the end of the school year. It actually started last month. First came spring break. As the children have a week off, our Charlotte family uses this opportunity to take a wonderful trip. After deciding where in the world their destination will be, my daughter researches places and activities that will be fun as well as educational for their children. This year, they chose to go to London. It was a wonderful trip, and they had a great time. Our other families stayed closer to home taking some day trips and not having a set schedule.

Sleeping in, going swimming and to the beach were also on the agenda.

School calendars have definitely changed since I was a child. I don’t recall ever having a week off in spring. We had the odd day off for a teacher workday, and we always had Good Friday off. Other than those, school was in until June 15th. In looking at my calendar, I realized that the month of May contained a number of events involving our grandchildren. To me, they heralded the winding down of the school year.

Soon after spring break comes a visit to two schools celebrating grandparents. This is followed by our youngest granddaughter’s ballet recital, then off to Charlotte for our grandson’s eighth grade middle school graduation. Then, we go to the move up ceremony for our fifth grader grandson moving on to middle school. Suddenly, schools are out and summer vacation begins for all seven of them.

I realize as I am writing this in April, some of these events are still more than a couple of months away. I also know that time will pass quickly. All of our fabulous grandchildren will rejoice that school is out and they won’t have to rise early. Some will go away to camp, some will attend sport camps, they’ll go to visit their other grandparents, go out on their boat and fish, and a number of things that will make the days pass far too quickly.

Before they’ve even fully adjusted to their summer fun schedule, August has raced in and sees them all back in school. Our eldest grandchild will be starting her senior year in high school (how is that even possible?) and applying to college. She has enjoyed traveling to many colleges on her list of possibilities. I will be excited when she chooses which one she will attend and when she starts this new adventure, but I will miss not being able to see her every time I go to Charlotte.

This is the start, although several years before the last one leaves the nest, of my precious grands making their way out into the world.

As I age, months seem to fly by. I can’t change this, so I treasure my time with each of them and love seeing how they’re growing and maturing. They know that, as long as I am able, I will be there for all the major events in their lives.

If it’s important to them, it’s important to me. Family time is absolutely my favorite time – I like to think that it keeps me young, maybe not in looks, but in my heart. My grandchildren are being raised to always do their best, be kind and respectful, ask if anyone needs help and be strong in their faith. They know they are loved and well cared for.

It is a pleasure to be around them. Are they always perfect?

No, they’re children. However, with age comes the ability to resolve most situations peacefully and successfully.

As I finish this article, my daughter informed me of a couple of dates I need to add to my calendar. Yes, May is here, June is coming up fast, schools are out and summer is upon us! I can’t wait to see what it has in store! Whatever it does, as long as I can spend some time with my wonderful families, it will be a great one!

The Transition to Parenthood

and Mental Health

Becoming a parent is considered one of the most significant points of change in our lives.

The change in our identity from being someone’s child to becoming someone’s parent is a large step. It can be a very exciting event and can also bring about many other emotions as we navigate the evolution of this new life coming into the world and the new version of life we are experiencing.

Due to the nature of these changes to our identity, family dynamics, health, lifestyle, relationships, etc., we are at risk of experiencing mental health challenges. We can often forget that this is a complex experience, and it is very normal to feel other emotions during this process. Here are a few important things to know when it comes to mental health during the time of pregnancy through one year postpartum, also known as the perinatal period.

PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT

When we experience a significant life event, it is very common to experience symptoms of stress. Of course, you’re likely to experience an increase in anxiety when caring for a brand new human being.

It makes sense you feel more irritable than before, if you are not able to sleep for consistent stretches of time. It’s also very likely you are having some anxious thoughts in anticipation of a birth experience. When we take a step back, it all makes sense to have these feelings. It’s important to know though that just because these feelings are common, does not mean you have to experience this alone or couldn’t benefit from support.

BOTH PARENTS CAN BE AFFECTED

Many people assume when we’re talking about pregnancy and postpartum that the mother is the

only person affected by this change, however, it’s important to know that fathers can also experience difficulties. One in 10 fathers will report symptoms of depression and anxiety during the perinatal period. Those symptoms may look differently in each parent.

Pay attention to behaviors such as isolating, lack of interest, low motivation, excessive worry, anger, guilt or increase in substance use.

WHAT TYPE OF HELP IS OUT THERE?

When it comes to support for the new parent during the perinatal period, there are many different types. It’s most helpful to have a variety of support.

•

Mental health therapists can specialize in this population; if you notice the credentials PMH-C behind someone’s name, that means they are certified in perinatal mental health.

•

There are many different types of support groups such as: pregnancy, postpartum, Dads, etc.

•

Meetup groups for new parents, such as stroller meetups or playdate meetups.

•

Many different providers can be helpful with various concerns during this experience: OBs, pediatricians, chiropractors, pelvic floor physical therapists, lactation consultants, and doulas, to list a few.

•

Informative resources such as podcasts, books and social media accounts.

KNOW YOUR RISK FACTORS

Everyone can experience mental health concerns during the perinatal period; no one is risk free. It’s important to know though, there are risk factors that can increase the likelihood you could experience symptoms more problematic than adjusting. Some examples of risk factors to developing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are previous history of mental health concerns, history of abuse, financial stress, experiencing prolonged labor or birth trauma, family history, relationship concerns, breastfeeding difficulties, little or no support, etc.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED HELP?

Seeking out support at any point in the perinatal period can be preventative of developing symptoms or worsening of symptoms. When considering if your experience is more than just adjustment, note frequency, intensity and duration of the symptoms. For example, when noting the symptom of irritability, it can be helpful to ask questions such as, how often am I feeling irritable?

How intense is that feeling when it happens on a scale of 1-10? How long do my moments of irritability seem to last? This information can be helpful when making the decision to seek out help, as well as communicating with your provider about how you are feeling.

JUNE 16-20 CREATING A CHARACTER

Little Theatre of W-S, 419 N. Spruce Street in W-S. We can be a fictional character or a real person. In theatre, we get to explore all of these characters. Through movement, expression and dress-up, campers will create their very own character. There will be a character showcase at the end of the week.

Campers will learn how facial, body and vocal changes can affect a character.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

Advice for the Class of 2025 – Let the Credits Roll

Most everyone, when they’re young and entering the career workforce for essentially the first time, is looking to climb the proverbial ladder to success.

Their vision is bright and, in that vision, no obstacles or challenges exist to alter it. Reality, however, tends to be quite different. There are roadblocks, construction and potholes along the way to slow you down, speed you up and sometimes send you on detours (otherwise known as alternate paths) along your journey to your destination.

Life’s not a yellow brick road to Oz.

A plan for your future is smart. It gives you direction and purpose. My suggestion, though, is to write it in pencil instead of ink. Be willing and able to erase and replace, strikethrough and/or add as the situation requires. Without a roadmap, you can get totally lost. And time moves quickly. Yet, relying solely on the map can potentially be a disadvantage, or at the very least, prevent you from capturing all of life’s nuggets of opportunity that come along periodically that we can’t foresee. This dry erase board method fosters self-guidance while making it simpler and more appealing to adjust and improve.

When unfortunate things happen, it’s important to understand that this happens to everyone. No one goes before you – parent, family, friends or otherwise – and paves out the absolute, smoothest path for you to take. Believe me, as a parent, I know we try to do this, but we learn as you will that you don’t control life. The best you can do is live it to the best of your ability.

This doesn’t mean they don’t affect your path, but their effect is merely influence.

It’s you who will ultimately control and determine what your life ends up being.

“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.” ~ Soren Kierkegaard Know that your supporters care about you. However, they only write a page or perhaps even a chapter in your life book; they don’t provide an entire prewritten script.

This is neither good nor bad, it’s just how it is. I’ve often found that when I anticipate, prepare for or in some way realize the inevitable bumps in the road, it allows me to reduce the level of adverse situations and increase the occurrences of positive ones in their place. Be conscious that things are not always as they appear on the surface. For example, losing one job feels bad but not if it opens the door to another opportunity that makes your life even better. And that is not an unusual story, most people have their version of such an experience in their history.

“On average, a person will change jobs 12 times during their lifetime…workers aged 25 to 34 have an average of 4.5 jobs during that period, while those aged 55 to 64 have an average tenure of 9.9 years with their employers.” (zippia.com) So, be prepared in the best way you can for those vagaries to occur.

Realize that not every noise in the dark woods is a threat.

As you each venture forward on your chosen paths, prepare for unknowns. If you don’t have a plan, make one now – it’s never too late to do the right thing. Make your plan flexible, though.

Utilize your human resources, yet, don’t expect everything to come from them. Be on the lookout for those special opportunities and open doors that intermittently occur in life, and try to take advantage of them the first time.

“Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.” ~ Idowu Koyenikan Finally, understand that each person has their definition of success, happiness and general satisfaction with life. Don’t judge others’ paths, just as you wouldn’t want them to judge yours.

Enjoy the journey of discovery that slowly unveils the point where your true happiness and contentment intersect, no matter which rung on the ladder it happens to be. That’s

where you’ll find your real success story.

Keep your eyes focused and your mind free to what is offered, and you’ll do well.

I can’t wait to see how your life flourishes and reaches its fullest potential. One last piece of sage advice I love for forging your path ahead comes from the world famous management consultant, Peter Drucker, who sums it up nicely, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
