In

April, I was able to take a spur-of-the-moment trip to Florida for a little fun in the sun with my favorite guy! We flew Allegiant out of the Concord airport into Fort Lauderdale for the first time and it could not have been easier! What a hidden gem of an airport! Next time you head to Florida, check it out! I originally wanted us to drive to the Keys, but spur-of-the-moment spring travel to the Keys is not exactly conducive to the budget-conscious traveler. We really love the Gulf Coast and after a little research and an affordable hotel discovery, we decided on Naples. A quick drive across Alligator Alley/I-75 and we were off to a week of new areas of Florida to discover! We waded through waist-deep water and walked through a mangrove trail to discover Tiger Tail beach on Marco Island, caught a ferry to Key West for a day, explored Captiva and Sanibel Islands for another. On our final day we relaxed on Clam Pass Beach and watched an amazing sunset on Naples Pier. It was such a nice break after the recent months we’ve just gone through!

ICON Custom Builders is our beautiful cover story this month. Nothing like a pandemic to make us all focus on those spaces we reside in. To my mom, Mary, I know I don’t say it often enough, but I love you very much. I’m grateful for your love and support and for helping to shape me into the person I am today. To my daughters, thank you for the role of a lifetime! God blessed me with two beautiful, strong and compassionate young women, and it truly is an honor to be your mom!

at caring for all mothers-to-be, the staff of Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates had the pleasure of expanding its own family during the pandemic, as last year we met several Lyndhurst employees who were expecting! Now, these new moms share their insights on motherhood at an especially challenging time—and we asked them to comment on both the challenges and the blessings of the past year, plus how they focused on self-care and relating to their patients.

Brooke Scott, RDMS, gave birth to Lyndon, a little girl, in May and says she and her husband loved that their hospital experience during Covid allowed them to focus on their sweet newborn, just the two of them. “The most challenging part was the stress of not wanting to get Covid close to delivery and risk exposing the baby, and worrying my husband would get it and not be at the hospital with me,” says Brooke. She also says being pregnant during such an unusual time made it easier to empathize with patients and their understandable fears.

Jessica Stewart, CNA, new mom to Bessie, born last August, knows how important self-care is, especially during the last year. “Having a time set each day for myself improved my mental and physical health during postpartum,” says Jessica. “Just having 30 minutes to go out for a walk lifted my spirits!” She’s also thankful her own experience has helped her relate to patients going through the same scenarios. “Throw a worldwide pandemic into the mix, and mothers can sometimes feel there’s nothing they can do to keep their babies safe!” she says.

Olivia Gillis, RDMS, delivered a little boy, Lewis, in October and found the biggest challenge of giving birth during Covid was

not having her mother and sister in the delivery room with her. “But, now that I have experienced being pregnant and delivering during a pandemic, it makes my patients feel more comfortable asking me questions,” she says. She also explains the upside of giving birth during the pandemic would be growing stronger as a couple, and learning how to cope with this crazy time together. “We are able to take everything in and enjoy the little things that we otherwise might have taken for granted,” she explains.

Rebecca Peeples, CMA (not pictured), welcomed baby boy Lennox in December and says the most difficult part of having a baby in 2020 has been worrying about making sure family members were wearing masks when they met the newborn. “I felt like I was almost scolding them, but they’ve been great around the baby,” she says. When asked by patients how she felt about having only one other person in the delivery room, she says it was actually a blessing in disguise! “You can have all

that special time with your newborn and can rest and recover without visitors in and out all day! As for selfcare, she reminds other new moms they can’t take care of someone else to the fullest without also taking care of themselves!

Addison Oswalt, RN, BSN, whose baby girl, Baylor, was born last July, is quick to point out there’s no instruction manual for having a baby during a pandemic! Moms-to-be typically have books, blogs, relatives, and friends to rely on for expertise, but this was so different. “It was overwhelming because I was sleep-deprived and recovering from delivery, while also worrying about keeping my family healthy,” she says.

“There are still people I care about who haven’t been able to meet Baylor because of Covid!” she explains.

She’s also found a deep connection with other moms who delivered this past year, knowing they are a unique group. “These pandemic babies are bringing so much light and joy to the world—that’s what we need to focus on!”

Jamie Petty, LPN, new mom to baby boy, Graham, born last September, discovered the joys of FaceTime as she and her husband introduced their newborn to family members who weren’t allowed to visit. “I can’t thank my friends and family enough for their text messages and phone calls to check on us and show their support,” she says. “Although we haven’t been able to be together in person, I feel strongly connected with them, more so now, and appreciate the effort they put forth to keep us in their lives.” She also found it easy to relate to patients who were missing family—and even the joy of traditional baby showers.

Photo from Forsyth Woman - July 2020 Ashley Haynes, RN, BSN, says fear of the unknown was the most challenging part for her as a new mom to Tate. “It’s just hard to know what’s the ‘right’ thing to do,” she says. “My husband and I really watched who we were around, and it was hard for us. Also, the stress that comes with pregnancy is a lot in a normal world, much less a Covid world, and I’ve had to make myself invest in my self-care,” explains Ashley. She reminds patients self-care might look different these days, but it’s still important, and that simply having been pregnant was a wonderful gift. Life wasn’t normal and appointments weren’t normal, but the gift of motherhood was still there! “I’m also grateful for the time our little family of three got to have together in the hospital,” she says.

a few minutes on the Mommy In Charge blog and it will become apparent that Anna Martin is a woman of faith and resilience. When faced with some of the most difficult challenges a new mom can encounter, she found joy in small victories and persevered.

Anna Martin: Mindset Coach, Heartset Woman

During her first pregnancy, Anna and her husband, Dale, learned that their unborn son had enlarged ventricles to the brain.

This condition is called “ventriculomegaly,” and it means that that ventricles in the brain have a higher than normal amount of cerebral spinal fluid. A young couple, enjoying the anticipation of becoming parents for the first time, suddenly found themselves in a “high risk” pregnancy with appointments to check for genetic disorders and other factors related to ventriculomegaly.

Rhett was born on Christmas Eve 2015 and came home after 6 weeks in the hospital on February 4, 2016. That was when Anna was called to journal her experience in the form of a blog. “At first it was a good way to let folks know how Rhett was doing and what to be praying for,” says Anna of her early days as a blogger. She found writing to be a cathartic outlet and she hoped she might be providing hope for other moms experiencing a similar situation.

As Rhett has grown and their small family has adapted and expanded to now include Brooks, who turns two this month, Anna began to feel a shift in the purpose of her writing. Instead of sharing updates and details of Rhett’s continued health concerns and accomplishments, she started to feel called to focus more on the needs of the Moms who are learning to parent special-needs children. Basically, she wanted to be the supportive and understanding friend that she was seeking in the earliest days of Rhett’s diagnosis.

Finding people going through the same kind of journey turned out to be rather easy. Anna says that although social media tends to get a bad rap, Facebook was truly a lifesaver! She found groups specific to the syndrome Rhett has, known as CHARGE Syndrome. Being a part of these unique Facebook groups allowed her and Dale occasionally to meet up with other CHARGE families during their stays at the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital has a team of doctors

specializing in CHARGE Syndrome, and Rhett underwent three surgeries there before the age of one.

As Anna connected with other families, and especially Moms facing similar challenges, she became aware that, like herself, Moms were not good at giving themselves much grace. “I had this constant feeling that I was being called to do more than what I currently was doing. I felt this strong nudge to help women facing similar circumstances, although I was unsure of how. I knew I needed to take the leap to figure out my own ambitions, so that is what I did.”

Earlier this year, Anna started her own Mindset Coaching business. Her invitation on Mommy In Charge does a fabulous job of summarizing her coaching mission: “I help these women find the freedom to live their life in [such] a way that their circumstances do not determine their happiness. The circumstances will still be there, and the obstacles will still come. I will challenge you to find systems that work for you, so that you can live your best life, which is a life full of joy. It’s one thing to set your mind on a goal and work to achieve it. It’s another thing to listen so faithfully to your heart, and then set your intention to help others through it.

It’s

a Saturday morning, and I’m meeting Samantha and her daughter for breakfast at the Olympic restaurant in Kernersville. It’s the second time in a few months that I’ve met Samantha for breakfast, but the first time that I’ve met her daughter. I approach them as they sit on the bench outside the restaurant. It’s a warm spring day with a gentle breeze that blows the mother’s and daughter’s hair around. I say hello to Samantha and introduce myself to her daughter—a very cute three-year-old with wispy brown hair, purple Frozen sunglasses, and a sweet but shy smile. I try to give her a fist bump, but she isn’t having any of that.

We all go into the restaurant and have a seat at the table. Samantha and I talk about how things are going for her as her daughter continues to be shy, hiding her face from me as she sits on her mom‘s lap. The conversation is mostly generic— how things are going, how her job is, how things are at home, how preschool for her daughter is. Samantha knows I’m interested in writing an article about her. I’m not sure if she understands why, however. I’m not sure she understands that she and her daughter are special.

So, it’s my job to tell you Why.

Seven years ago, I was a fifth-grade teacher at a local elementary school.

In this particular year, I had a student named Samantha. Samantha was one of those students you don’t forget. She had what I would refer to as,”spunk.”

She had that personality that was never disrespectful, but she’d tell you the way it is, nonetheless. I liked those kinds of students. Was Samantha the best and the brightest? No. But she worked hard. And knowing what I know now, I have come to have an incredible amount of respect for her. You see, just like everyone, Samantha had a story. And, she has continued to have a story. One that I feel the need to share because I do admire this young lady and the obstacles she has not only faced, but is overcoming as we speak.

Halfway through our breakfast, Samantha‘s little girl starts opening up. I watch with lightheartedness as she sticks her finger into the small cup of butter and smears it onto the Minnie Mouseshaped pancake that the waitress was kind enough to bring out, even though we didn’t order a pancake. Samantha tells me about her life. She’s only 19 years old. But she’s gone through more than some adults go through in a lifetime. At the age of three, her parents divorced. Three years later, her mother

was killed in a tragic auto accident.

In just the first six years of her life, Samantha was facing some very harsh realities. Samantha’s father remarried, but divorced that woman later. Toward the end of her 8th-grade year, Samantha became pregnant. Needless to say, she was scared—scared of what lay ahead, scared of what her father would think and say, scared of the unknown. The father of the child immediately denied that it was his. Samantha not only felt betrayed, but almost alone in what she was facing. At school, other kids were more interested in touching her growing belly. Behind her back, they were talking, as, sadly, most will do. She had one good friend who was supportive.

But other than that one friend, Samantha was on her own. I asked Samantha if she ever considered other options. Her immediate response was, “Never.” My respect for her grew profoundly. You see, as someone who was raised by my grandparents, later abused by my parents, and then adopted, I am very well aware that my own mother could have made a choice that would have resulted in me never existing. Samantha made that same choice. She chose LIFE. She could have taken the easy way out.

But instead, she chose to carry through with her pregnancy and give birth to a beautiful little girl who would change her life forever.

Now, toward the end of our meal, her little girl is showing her bubbly side.

She’s actually talking to me. I’ve earned some of her trust. For the record, Samantha finished her GED. She has a job and has also been working on painting. She has an interest in perhaps selling her work someday. She lives with her father, and while the situation may not be ideal, she stays focused on raising her daughter, working hard, and trying to keep her own life on track. She wants her daughter to learn from her own past.

And just like any parent, she wants a better life for her precious little girl.

I follow Samantha and her daughter out of the restaurant. The sweet little girl with her purple sunglasses (a bit crooked on her face) carries her to-go cup of orange juice. I finally get that fist bump I was hoping for. I tell them both we will do this again in another month or so. As I get in my car and drive back toward home, I wave goodbye to Samantha and her daughter. I feel blessed to be just a small part of a former student’s life—a former student who has made some very tough choices, and whom I have all the respect in the world for.

has been a long fourteen months. Sacrifices have been made and precautions taken,

and finally, now, we’re starting to

see significant progress towards expanding vaccinations. Thanks to this unified effort, life is gradually making its way back slowly towards a sense of normalcy.

I know we’re all grateful to see that. It hasn’t been easy; however, businesses have adapted, including the entire Winston-Salem Dash organization. Everyone, from the players to the staff and front office, is excited and looking forward to seeing those smiling faces again in the stands at the newly renamed Truist Stadium.

They’ve missed their fans tremendously and wish to show their gratitude, as always, by providing a safe, secure, and entertaining ballpark experience for everyone to enjoy, especially appreciated during these historic times.

Along with important safety measures, the marketing and promotions group has worked hard to provide many of the time-honored favorites loyal fans have enjoyed over the years, including the delicious aroma of hotdogs, burgers, and the ever-popular stadium snacks of popcorn, peanuts, and ice-cold beverages that delight your senses upon entering the stadium. That’s only the beginning, as fans will be excited to know this season will once again include Lowes Foods Family Sunday, Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday, Tito’s Pups in the Park, Free Hot Dog Nights (available while supplies last), and postgame fireworks after select home games. The Rayados series is back, transforming Truist Stadium at select games this season while celebrating the culture and values of the Hispanic/ Latino community. These are just some of the entertaining and enjoyable items in store for fans this season. More surprises await.

Of course, the main draw is all the incredible game action that takes place on the field. This season the Dash are part of the new High-A East League. Officially in the Southern Division, it includes the Asheville Tourists (Houston Astros), Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays), Greensboro Grasshoppers (Pittsburgh Pirates), Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox), Hickory Crawdads (Texas Rangers), and Rome Braves (Atlanta Braves). Most notable this season will be the Dash’s first opportunity since 1968 to face their cross-town friendly foe, Greensboro. This should provide some very exciting rivalry games the Twin City has not seen in over 50 years. Their first matchup will be on Tuesday, June 15, for the start of a six-game home stretch. Note, all matchups this season will be in the six-game stretch format, Tuesday through Sunday (home and away). Their 60-game home schedule, including 30 weekend games this season, provides plenty of opportunities for fans to come out to the ballpark and enjoy the warm weather, friendly camaraderie, good times, and great action that is Dash baseball!

Originally introduced during the 2020 season in their continuing commitment to improving fan safety, the Dash organization had an additional 40-foot-high netting installed that protects all fixed seats along the first- and third-base lines. Furthermore, they installed a 15-foot-high netting to protect those seated in the lawn section. Paying close attention to detail, not only does this netting protect with a strength 15% stronger than steel, its special

green protective coating provides fans with 95% visibility. Safety and security are high priorities in the organization to offer their fans the best experience possible. A valued allegiance to their fans as recognized in three of the last five seasons (2020 season excluded): being nominated for the John H. Johnson President’s Award (top honor in Minor League baseball) recognizing their commitment to their fans, the community, the league, and baseball in general.

In their first decade at the downtown facility, the Dash led all 30 High-A teams in attendance. That’s an impressive accomplishment that acknowledges our community recognizes the value of a family-friendly atmosphere, in a fun and safe environment. The Dash organization relishes your confidence in their hard work and dedication to this cause. Everyone, from the front office to the stadium staff, is adhering to CDC, state, and local guidelines for the utmost safety of their beloved fans.

Youth Independent Living at CROSSNORE

Adulting is hard—there’s little secret about that. For many kids, adulting skills are learned by watching their parents, taking on chores, and being given more responsibility—whether they like it or not. However, for those who have spent time in foster care or who are aging out of the foster care system, adulting can be a herculean effort, namely because they lack the support to be successful. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, 20% of kids who have aged out of foster care become homeless because they lack the support or skills needed to be successfully independent.

Crossnore School & Children’s Home is paving the way to change that disturbing trend in North Carolina. In 2021, they launched the Youth Independent Living program, a reinvention of programs formerly known as “Youth in Transition” and “Miracle Scholars.”

Sandy Sauer, the program director of Youth Independent Living, shared, “This is a program designed to help young adults between the ages of 16–26 learn the skills for independent living. While our 16- and 17-year-olds are still a part of the foster system, our program begins setting the stage, and we help prepare them for the transition ahead. And at age 18, when they transition out of foster care, we support them through the age of 26, which, statistics show, is the average age of many young adults before they leave home.

The program is uniquely structured, in that it allows for a supervised transition into adulthood. “We aren’t throwing these kids into the deep end, hoping they will figure out how to swim,” said Sandy. “We have designed a systematic approach that will enable them to make the transition gradually—teaching them how to budget, pay the bills, clean the house, do the laundry, grocery shop, cook a meal, and all the adult responsibilities that everyone needs to know.”

It starts with the application program. “Needless to say,” said Sandy, “while we would like this program to be accessible to all who want to participate, we also need our participants to be serious and willing to do their part. Participation in Youth Independent Living requires an application, an interview process, and a minimum of two references.”

“They must either be in school full-time and working part-time, or they must be working full time,” she continued. “We have limited housing options, including two semi-supervised apartments on the Crossnore campus for those who are 18 and older. We also have

off-campus apartments, and in both situations, rent is covered on a graduated scale. Initially, 100% of the rent is covered by funds provided by the Department of Social Services, grants from the city and United Way. But throughout the program, the program participant graduates to paying 25% of the rent…. Then 50%... before finally taking 100% ownership of their rent payments. And even while they receive rent assistance, they are expected to pay for utilities and groceries.”

Sandy and her team have started with three active program residents. They have two in progress with additional applications coming in. “We have received a great deal of support and enthusiasm, but help is always needed. Namely, anything you’d need for an apartment –furniture, kitchenware, bath towels, etc.—we need. Gas cards help get participants to and from jobs and school. And of course, we also need resources and opportunities—jobs and job training from those who are willing to equip these young adults with a chance.

“Self-sufficiency is a learned skill,” said Sandy. “We aren’t parenting these residents at this point—we are coaching them on how to be adults. And by doing so, we are setting them up for success. This is an atrisk population—not only for homelessness but also sex trafficking. We want to protect them from that, and if we can give them the gift of stability— well, it takes a village. We need the community’s help.”

customer communications. So, they started to think about what she grew—watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, zucchini. They said to each other, “Produce by Nevaeh?” but then shook their heads in agreement that it just didn’t click. Only moments later, it clicked— Produce from Heaven! In case you haven’t caught the hidden anagram yet, Nevaeh spelled backward is “Heaven.”

all started in Spring 2020, when 10-year-old Nevaeh’s mom encouraged her to try growing produce to pass the crazy times we were experiencing as a nation. It only took a few weeks to find that growing these fresh flavors was a newly discovered passion. Fast forward into the Summer and you may have noticed her being the youngest farmer at the Clemmons Farmers’ Market!

As her harvest became abundant, Nevaeh’s mom, Jessica, had the idea of creating a fun business plan together. Their first step was to brainstorm a business name to make a Gmail account for any

To this day, Nevaeh wakes up every morning, even on the weekends, at 7:15 am to put on her overalls before she goes to let out her chickens and then prepare for school. Since she is currently doing school at home, she enjoys sharing a hot cup of decaf coffee with her mom before she dives into her schoolwork. Around 11:30 am, Nevaeh will utilize her lunch break to bring her plants into the greenhouse and move her fruit trees outside for some sunlight; however, her work doesn’t end once school’s dismissed for the day.

“After I do my homework, I’ll go care for my chickens. They like to play with me. One even jumps on my back and sits on my shoulder like it’s a parrot! Before the sun goes down, I water my plants before bringing them back inside, then I do it all again the next day, and I love it!” And, in case your day needs a little more sunshine, take a listen to her chickens’ names: Scrambled, Fried, Omelette, Hei Hei, Miss Bojangles, Frittata, Quiche, Over Easy, Sunny Side Up, Poached, Waffles, and Boiled.

“It was really exciting to see my fourth-grade teacher come to visit me at the market last summer, since I didn’t get to finish out the school year, and to know that she was supporting me was great,” said Nevaeh. Inspired by her entrepreneurial spirit, Nevaeh’s fourth grade teacher even added on a project—teaching her students how to successfully run a small business. Not stopping there, she has also inspired her Principal and her very supportive mother to start their own gardens. Growing up, Jessica would garden with her Nana during the warmer months, yet hadn’t done so since her passing.

So, in her honor, Nevaeh was the inspiration to her mother, her grandma’s co-workers, and many others, as she lives with admirable ambition and optimism at such a young age.

3) Youth Leadership - grades 6-12 Build leadership skills this summer by writing mission statements, responding to journal prompts, and doing reflective exercises.

Students will work on the following habits during the week: being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking to first understand and then to be understood, to synergize, and to “sharpen the saw” (that’s highly effective speak for taking care of yourself).

4) Trail Blazers - grades 3-8 Campers will enjoy hiking and walking at local parks and trails as well as explore the 5K cross-country trail on the FCDS campus.

Along with walking and hiking, students will learn about healthy lifestyles take part in fun outdoor activities 5) Coding Camp - grades 5-9 Coding and computer programming builds analytical thinking skills, problem-solving, and is also just plain fun. This camp explores what it means to code, and campers will have opportunities to solve a wide range of problems - using the Lego EV3 robotic platform and program it to run obstacles. We’ll explore concepts of automation, physics, and electronics.

6) A Cappella Camp - grades 6-12 Do you enjoy listening to artists such as the Pentatonix or Peter

Hollens? Is the Pitch Perfect movie series one of your all-time favorites? If so, what if you learned that you could sing just like them? At the a cappella camp, you can! Campers will learn all of the basics of the contemporary a cappella style - singing and vocal technique, beatboxing, arranging and composition, microphone technique, and how to rock the stage. It all culminates with a showcase performance at the end of the week!

7) Serve the City - grades 3-9 What a better way to enjoy summer fun than serving others in our own community. Each day we will learn about local organizations and complete service projects that will benefit and impact the lives of others in our community. We will do service projects both on and off-campus while following all health and safety guidelines.

8) Pottery - grades 6-12 Ever wanted to make your own mug, bowl, jar, vase, or teapot?

Come join FCDS art teacher, John Kildahl, for a week of wheel throwing. No experience required. We will learn how to center our clay on the wheel, how to trim up our pieces to perfection, how to add handles and spouts, and how to glaze and decorate our bisque-fired work. It’ll be a messy and action-packed week of clay. And by the end, you’ll head home with some lovely handmade pottery.

9) History - A Tour of Winston Salem - grades 5-8 This limited-capacity exploratory week will take campers and show them Winston-Salem as they’ve never seen it before. Why? The history of Winston-Salem is just too rich to miss! Beginning over 250 years ago, this city’s history is dynamic and alive.

Each day, campers will board the bus and head off in search of knowledge, stepping through each of the pivotal eras of our local history to develop a deeper understanding of where we come from and how we got here.

10) All Sports - grades K-5 Get active with a week of awesome activities and sports with your friends. FCDS Summer Enrichment coaches and leaders will give campers the opportunity to engage in and play a variety of different sports each day of the week. Campers will enjoy activities indoors and outdoors.

Safety Around Water (saw) Take

a second to reflect back on your childhood, especially during the summertime. Is there a better time of the year than summers, when you’re a kid?

There’s no school, the days are longer, it’s warmer outside, and there’s so much more to do. You’d play at the park with your friends, maybe you were signed up for baseball, and the pool was open.

Maybe you and your family even took trips to the beach or the lake.

Summer is an incredible time to be a kid.

But unfortunately, there are too many kids today who cannot safely participate in about half of the activities listed above.

Accidental drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children 14 years and younger, according to the Centers for Disease Control. However, with the right skillset and lessons learned, so many of these deaths could be preventable.

YMCAs have been teaching kids the necessary life-saving skills they need for them to be safe in and around water through swim lessons and our Safety Around Water program.

Safety Around Water, or SAW, is a little different from traditional swim lessons.

SAW works with communities to identify kids and families who may not be able to afford or access traditional swim lessons and teaches them essential life-saving skills at no cost to them or their families.

The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has been awarded $94,000 in grant

funding from Y-USA for this year’s SAW Program. The Y will be able to serve 1,400 children across 14 branches. This is the largest grant for SAW that the YMCA of NWNC has ever received. The second largest grant for SAW was $57,000 that served 1,105 children in 2019.

Access to quality swim lessons has other barriers to it besides socioeconomic status. Race and geographical settings also play into the inequity of accessing swim lessons that could one day mean life or death for a child. Youth of color are at least three times more likely to drown than their counterparts, according to the CDC. We are thrilled to announce that during the week of May 24th-28th our Ys will offer the SAW program, free of charge to the community. Registration will begin April 26th and is open to children ages 5-12 years old. And while teaching 1,400 children in our Y Association the ability to swim seems like a great undertaking—and it is—we’re only scratching the surface of where we need to be.

There are thousands of children in our communities who could benefit from SAW. And there are thousands of families who could benefit from the comfort and ease

of mind, knowing that their children are safer when they go to the pool, beach, lake, or any other body of water.

An additional benefit worth noting is that when a child learns a skill such as swimming and can overcome the daunting challenge of swimming the length of a pool, they have a new sense of confidence that can then be transferred to other aspects of their lives.

This program literally transforms lives.

Ah,

the memories of summer camp!

Maybe it was the first time you caught a fish in a lake or paddled a boat, climbed a mountain or modeled a bowl out of clay, wrote a chorus of music or caught a glimpse of what your true life’s passion might be. Maybe you simply made a new best friend or two.

Adventures at summer camp can—without a doubt—be life-changing! Once you take the plunge, you’ll likely be back again, summer after summer, and while you might not always be outdoors, you’ll be discovering activities that really interest you. For some, it might be finding the

melody in their hearts or the mix of colors that make them smile, and music and art camps are especially wonderful opportunities to build confidence. At the end of camp you may get to perform on stage or display your drawings or paintings. If you’ve been shy about sharing your talents, summer camp is a perfect time to show them off to family and friends. Arts classes and activities are proven to boost language, social, cognitive, and motor skills, as well as inspire inventive thinking that transcends the childhood and teen years and extends on into adulthood!

When adults share memories of summer camp they often remember being nervous on the car ride there, but immediately finding a new friend who felt exactly the same way. By Friday, marking the end of camp, they were already happily making plans to reconnect with each other the next summer! After a couple of years, they may remember becoming junior counselors themselves, taking on new responsibilities, while also learning a little more about themselves along the way.

Besides the bonus of forming new friendships and uncovering new interests, attending summer camp strongly fosters independence and empowerment in children and teens, and to their parents’ delight, gives many of them the chance to yield a little “screen time” to take a break from technology and form a connection with nature and the outdoors. Learning to swim for the first time and finally feeling comfortable in and around the water, and even learning official live-saving skills to carry them through life, is definitely time well spent.

For many kids the main goal of a summer camp experience may be overcoming a fear of sleeping away from home, or a fear of heights or even being near the water. Compassionate, encouraging camp counselors are long-remembered fondly for helping their young charges overcome a personal fear, often forming bonds that can last a lifetime.

On a personal note, my son was a bit shy and reluctant when we arrived at his first day of music camp at a local university, and literally couldn’t be convinced to go inside. He went on to major in music in college and plays a variety of instruments. Encourage your children to take a chance, follow a new path, and learn something new this summer—their camp experience will take them far!

However, many parents find that young adult kids are not ready to attempt a move out on their own. According to recent Pew Research studies, a larger percentage of young adults live at home with their parents than in past generations. To better equip your young adult for life without mom or dad in the next room, here are some skills that will make the transition easier:

Teens and young adults who have learned to master their emotions can keep themselves out of negative situations in all areas of their lives.

They can walk away from harmful people, abusive jobs and avoid all kinds of problems. They can also stay in control during times of stress, deal with discomfort and find ways to delay gratification. They can identify positive friendships and relationships and not allow themselves to be taken advantage of.

How to Make Sure Your Kids are Ready to Leave the Nest

day you turn around and realize with disbelief that your

child is almost ready to leave the nest and go out into the big world on his/ her own. That day is bittersweet. If you’re watching all this and you see before you someone who is prepared to go, and filled with independence and excitement for the future…applaud yourself, for you have done a great job!

Before your young person leaves home, he or she should have a good understanding of how a budget works, how to use online banking, how to balance a checkbook and how to pay bills. Of course, you will probably be there as back-up for a while, but he or she should understand the consequences of not managing these things appropriately, such as damaged credit, utilities being turned off, cars being repossessed and eviction. It’s a tough world out there!

Domestic/Maintenance Skills

Your child should learn some basic cooking skills, how to maintain their automobile, how to do their laundry and how to keep their space clean before they move out. They should also be ready for small domestic emergencies, like what to do in case of a fire, how to unclog a toilet, whom to call for a pest invasion and what to do if an appliance breaks.

Academic/Work Skills

Learning how to have a good work ethic is a critically important skill, and teaches a young person to push through in nearly all aspects of their life. Learning to be on time, follow instructions and complete their projects will benefit them not only at school and at work, but in their relationships, hobbies and home life.

Getting Along with all Types of People

Positive social skills and manners can take you a long way in life. Teens and young adults should know how to be courteous and how to carry on a basic conversation with any person they encounter. In all types of social situations, your child needs to be taught to read a room and know his or her audience. They should act in a way that is appropriate for the surroundings and the situation and always be kind and courteous, even when those manners are not reciprocated. Honestly, you can only teach so much of this…a lot of it they have to learn through their own experience.

Self-Care Skills

Your child should know how to ask for help, know how to identify if he/she needs medical treatment, know how to sign in at the doctor or hospital and how to complete paperwork. They also need to understand how to pick up a prescription and self-administer medication. Finally, and this one may seem like a no-brainer, but your child needs to know how to maintain basic hygiene. Send them off with toothpaste, toothbrushes and lots of soap!

As the parent, you’ve spent the better part of the last 18+ years working hard to ensure your child is ready to conquer the world on his or her own. Are they ready to be on their own? Can they survive in the harsh reality of the real world? Yes, yes, they can. They can, they will, and most likely, they will thrive! (Although they may come back once in a while craving a home-cooked meal and carrying a big sack of laundry.)

BUILDING THE BUSINESS ICON Custom Builders transforms homes and leads by example – focusing on superior quality and creating positive working relationships that have turned into friendships with clients, subcontractors and trade partners. Owner and President Chuck Hicks shared how ICON got its name: “What it says is what we wanted to be: an icon in the industry.”

Prior to launching the business in 2005, Chuck and his wife, Shawn Bowman-Hicks, were flipping their own houses. Every few years, they would relocate for his job with Sara Lee (now Hanes). They were both drawn to older homes so they would buy, renovate, move, repeat. After Chuck left the textile business years later, Shawn encouraged him to get a general contractors license and pursue home renovation full-time. Shawn remembered saying, “What’s the worst that could happen? That we’d start this company and it would fail, and that would be okay.”

Chuck recalled, “When you start a business like this, who’s going to hire you?

Who’s going to take that risk?” They had to begin somewhere, so they purchased a house to renovate and flip. Chuck selfperformed many aspects of the renovation over a five-month period, working day and night. It took about three months for him to physically recover. With only $10k in profit, he laughed and said, “that was my income for the first year.” Nevertheless, he and Shawn remained dedicated to the dream.

The husband and wife team got more involved with the community and the Homebuilders Association, connected with realtors and participated in open houses and showcases. After buying and renovating several homes with an expanding team, they began the transition to exclusively client-driven projects.

People started to take notice. “Our business grew every year because we were doing a great job renovating, and people kept hiring us,” Chuck recalled. “We kept building our business.”

and trade partners. “To have the right people on the team has been a real focus,” he said. From master carpenter Don Guilbault’s custom pieces to project manager Doug Johnson’s problem-solving skills, every team

member provides a valuable perspective to each project. Over the last 16 years, ICON’s workload has increased and the team has expanded, but the emphasis on relationships has remained the same.

A TIMELESS TRANSFORMATION When homeowner Denise Hiller called ICON to lead a major renovation on her home built in 1928, Chuck knew his team would rise to the challenge. The project centered on a kitchen renovation, but the scope also included updates to the laundry room, mudroom and powder room. Doug Johnson – who oversaw the project – recalled, “one of our biggest challenges was creating this new open space which totally contradicts the original style of the home, which had a small kitchen and butler’s pantry.” He added, “tying new and old can really be a challenge.”

cook at the same time, so expanding the space was a priority. Once the floor plans were finalized, Jenny looked at the “flow,” carefully examining traffic patterns and appliance locations. She then designed the cabinets with form and function in mind. “I feel like I can have people in there and be talking to my kids while I’m working,” Denise shared. “It feels really functional and I’m happy to be in there now.”

The goal was to modernize a few key spaces while preserving the home’s character and charm. Denise had a purpose behind every design decision: “I wanted it to feel like it could’ve been there the whole time.” ICON partnered with architect Mark Shaver, Jenny Roush Newman of West End Cabinets and Amanda Hiatt Interiors to bring Denise’s vision to life.

ICON used Jenny’s final floor plans to determine window, door, lighting and vent placement in each space. She collaborated with Denise to design a corner hutch to replicate one that had been in the original breakfast nook.

“Details like dropping the height of the hutch and adding a smaller profile crown, arch valance, glass doors, and decorative V-groove make it look like it had never been touched!” Jenny shared. They also said goodbye to the 1950s-style metal cabinets that didn’t accommodate the 2020-sized pots and pans that Denise uses.

Jenny Roush Newman played a key role from the beginning. “I wanted to make sure that the homeowner would have a functional space that still fit the style of the home,” she said. The tiny footprint of the kitchen made it difficult for two to

the cabinets to function as modern, but wanted it to feel like we had not stuck this brand-new white box on the back of this beautiful brick 1920s home.”

It’s not just the kitchen that received an upgrade. ICON renovated the laundry room and mudroom, and relocated a bath. They also designed an adjacent space for Denise’s two children to complete their schoolwork. “It’s nice having them here where I can pop in and help if I need to, and we’re all together,” Denise shared. Each space shares similar design features – marble countertops, wooden shelves and warm colors and textures – that flow beautifully to create a cohesive look.

DEDICATION TO DETAIL Just like every home is unique, so are the details ICON incorporates to transform a space, no matter how complicated or time-consuming. Amanda will often ask Chuck, “can we do ____?” and he always responds, “we can do it.” For the Hiller family’s renovation, Doug came up with the idea to use a reclaimed door as a pocket door between the kitchen and mudroom: “it probably matches the house in age.”

Customer service and craftsmanship - to get the combination of those two things is not easy in this industry. There are some great people who build, but it’s not the same quality. And there are some people who provide really good quality, but they do not care for the customer the same way that ICON does…I feel like [the ICON team] checks all the boxes for me.

for a door that’s going to be harder to install,” Amanda said. But Doug did not hesitate because he knew that incorporating older pieces was important to the client. This vintage door was heavier and thicker than a modern wooden door, so ICON’s carpenter Don Guilbault put in the work to ensure it slides and glides naturally. Adding some antique brass hardware to it “makes it feel like it has always been there,” Doug added.

Another creative solution involved a transom window above the pocket door between the kitchen and dining room. In a typical situation, they would cut a hole through the wall, but that was not an option. They could not risk disrupting the original wallpaper in the dining room.

The solution? Creating a faux transom using mirrored glass. “It looks like you’re

looking into the dining room, but you’re actually getting a reflection from the lanterns in the kitchen,” Amanda shared.

“It mirrors the other glass transoms in the rest of the space.”

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Denise was thrilled to be able to cook on Thanksgiving Day, just like the ICON team promised. “They made it happen for me,” she shared. Despite delays and disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ICON continued doing business safely and efficiently. Amanda has come to expect this level of service when working with ICON: “when they tell you the turkey is going to cook on Thanksgiving, they’ll be there to make sure everything gets done.”

RECOGNIZING THE CALL FOR HELP The

months spanning 2020 and 2021 brought to the surface an acute awareness of mental health. Weekly, if not daily, video or phone calls and texts reached beloved family and friends, whether near or far, to ask the most critical question, “How are you?” and “Did you leave the house today?” A sign of relief welcomed those willing to talk, opening the door to verbalize concerns, feelings, and problems. Other times, silence or a dismissive response led to a grave worry and the question, “What more can I do?” The “call for help” arrives in varying degrees. While some could verbalize it or use emotions, others chose to enclose themselves in darkness. From that year’s experiences, not one of us can disregard the instinct to seek help for ourselves or others!

An Instructive Tool As humans, we are complex individuals who selectively share our secrets to a small few. Deep down, there may be a darker, concealing side. As a means to better understand ourselves and our interpersonal relationships, we can use the Johari Window Model, which provides an honest self-assessment through a symbolic, four-paned window.

• The FIRST pane represents complete transparency, a clear glass divulging all thoughts, feelings, and information.

• The SECOND quadrant is known as the “blind.” While others can see hidden strengths and character flaws, the defined values are unknown to you.

• A THIRD window is a place “hidden”—a tinted scene containing information that others do not know.

• The FOURTH pane portrays the complete darkness of the “unknown.” Perhaps the content is buried or forgotten, never revealed or known by others.

Master Sergeant J. was the life of the party. His animated acts, one-liners, and brilliant mind left the crowd in stitches of tears of laughter. His hidden place led to cycles between long bouts of alcoholism and rehab. J.’s “red flag” was known to supportive family and friends; yet, he dressed for work one weekday morning, kissed his wife, and left the house to end the pain.

Defense Mechanisms Jesse Almanza, USMC, RET., shares, “In the Marine corps, through a program called SACO, Substance Abuse Control Officer, I arranged alcohol and drug classes. Many [others also] came to the discovery that they had underlying problems and needed guidance to learn how to let go. Marines and other military members need an alternative way to cope with missing the births, birthdays, holidays, and deaths of loved ones.

Without help, it becomes a defense mechanism to face problems and [we] respond through anger, isolation, alcohol, drugs, or other means.”

Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies to separate the mind from unpleasant events, actions, or thoughts. We use denial and compartmentalizing as means of escape. Coping is not all negative.

• Remain quiet, rather than confront a problem?

• Make humorous quips during moments of stress?

All the above are normal responses!

Joining a Group Receiving emotional support necessitates making a phone call or arriving at a destination on time. Nike Roach, Founder of the Gulf War Veterans Coffee in Winston-Salem, shares, “Not everyone wants to join a group. Usually, there are preliminary questions, such as ‘Who is in the group and is it worth my time?’ As leaders of a group, we are not the professionals; yet, as veterans, we are instrumental as a resource to provide a safe space in allowing others to vocalize their thoughts. When we discover someone in a state of crisis, it matters that we were there to hear the confession. While we are not professionals, we are the source of help and can provide places to call or go.”

Whether he or she is a friend or acquaintance, it takes bravery to admit, “I am in a bad place!” Most people need a safe space and a friend among the crowd. You may be the one positive resource to get them from darkness to light!

The disruption caused by the pandemic has tested her three decades of IT experience: Many of Truliant’s 270,000 members have become more reliant on Truliant’s digital services, and hundreds of Truliant employees started working remotely – almost overnight.

New programs were instituted to ease economic stress for members and businesses, and Truliant’s digital services saw tremendous growth because the pandemic forced significant in-person banking reductions.

Leading Digital Transformation at Truliant WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – From an early age, Laura Dezarn knew that she had an aptitude for technology.

Dezarn, the vice president of IT infrastructure and operations at Truliant Federal Credit Union since 2018, just got computers.

“Our job has been to find creative ways to remove member pain points and encourage growth. During the pandemic, we’ve launched new digital capabilities. And we are always asking what we can do so members can be more fully engaged digitally,” Dezarn said. “On all fronts, our teams went beyond expectations, making thoughtful decisions in the face of rapid change.”

The platform and the capacity to handle the rapid transition to digital services has been in development for the past few years at Truliant. The credit union had built a framework for improving its processes and to better understand member experiences and eliminate bottlenecks for members.

“While I didn’t grow up with easy and instant access to computers, I developed a love and fascination for first-generation computers,” Dezarn said. “I was able to visualize how important technology would become in our lives. And I always thought it would be a great career.”

Dezarn’s financial-services background, passion for leading technology initiatives and strong connection to the Winston-Salem community ultimately led her to Truliant.

Women in Tech One of Dezarn’s professional passions is helping women explore tech careers. Women represent about half the workforce, but only a quarter of tech jobs.

IT jobs are in high demand at many companies. She mentors female students at Wake Forest University.

She also encourages young girls to embrace STEM subjects and tech careers as they begin to put together their educational plans.

“Like many careers that were once dominated by men – the result of past social and generational norms – the lopsidedness in tech is starting to change,” Dezarn said.

Golf Because Dezarn spends so much time in front of a computer, golf is an opportunity to spend time outdoors with her husband, Todd, and their friends.

Another part of golf’s appeal is the mental challenge.

“I offer the women at Wake ideas on varied paths for careers in science and technology,” Dezarn said. “I let them know that a technology career is a tremendous opportunity, and many of their social ideals are baked into the work-life balance philosophies that many companies are now embracing.”

During the pandemic, women suffered a disproportionate number of the job losses. Looking ahead, some of the most in-demand tech jobs could help women close that gap: web developers, digital interface designers, network and computer systems administrators, computer network architects, information security analysts, and database administrators and architects.

“The pros make the game look so easy,” Dezarn said.

“But every shot is different. There are lots of variables built into a course, combined with the always-changing weather conditions.

“Historically, golf has been a male-dominated sport. I often find myself as one of the few women playing in tournaments. Golf is another opportunity for women to close the gender gap!”

Dezarn, a North Wilkesboro native, has been a Forsyth County resident for 24 years, since her days as a Wake Forest MBA student. She and her husband have Westies – West Highland White Terriers.

By this time last year, we had already booked a return visit by Harvard University’s Robert Putnam, reserved our space at the convention center and printed the sponsorship programs for our annual Raising Every Child Benefit Luncheon. We have lost our largest in-person fundraiser two years in a row. We have missed seeing donors like you. We didn’t get a chance to honor Joe Crocker for his lifetime of service. • Shenell McClurkin Thompson with the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust will discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected communities of color – particularly with young children. She will explain the connection between health equity and educational equity, considering that many low-income families with young children receive health screenings and are connected to a medical home by the staff of early childhood development programs. She will also share what we have learned from COVID-19 about the need for universal Pre-K to ensure the health of young children.

• Dr. Lia Erickson, a pediatrician with Novant Health, will focus on delivering medical/health services to young children during the pandemic, specifically in terms of maintaining contact with their medical home and dealing with the effects of social isolation.

• Our parent panelist will share experiences and insight from a family supporting their young children during the last year. Enrollment in the North Carolina Pre-K program in Forsyth County is down by more than 40 percent during the pandemic year, and for much of the time those enrolled were only being reached remotely.

It’s an opportunity to support growers and farmers in communities near you!

Hanging Rock State Park Farmer’s Market On a day to consider, “Where can we go today?”, individuals and families need to remember that an exceptional state park is roughly 45 minutes north. Offering a traditional outdoor experience, Hanging Rock has picnic grounds, a lake for swimming and canoeing, accessible hiking trails for all levels, rock climbing opportunities, clear streams, and waterfalls. Since 2010, the park has added one additional feature for visitors—the Stokes Future Farmers’ Market. • Select your statement fabric. This is the main fabric that you want to really stand out. This can be the fabric of an upholstery item, it may be the fabric that you are going to have drapes made from.

Honeybees are a network of team discipline, distinct roles, organization, and sacrifice! Each of us can learn a lot from their nature.

Most

husbands say things like, “I want to adopt a dog,” not, “I want to raise bees!” The bee idea triggered a childhood memory of performing cartwheels and running to the house after a jarring bite to the palm. From that moment onward, bees, in my mind, were associated with pain, and were an insect well avoided. My husband, Kevin, however, pursued the venture by purchasing a hive, equipment, a beekeeping suit for two, and prepaid for a package of bees and one queen!

Immediately, I panicked! How was it arriving? Shock led to the discovery that we would have to pick them up! Together we had watched YouTube videos, attempting to absorb every aspect of the bee world in 30- to 45-minute increments!

Then, the fateful day arrived, our bee package was ready for pickup—except Kevin was not in the state! It was up to me!

Bravely, I brought home 3,000-plus new charges.

2021 now marks our fourth season as state-certified beekeepers. In the same fashion that people become instantly animated talking about their beloved cat or dog, so I feel about honeybees. Occasionally, a four-winged flyer will land on my hand or shoulder to rest. The sensation feels slightly ticklish from the beat of her wings. In seconds, she disappears, following “orders” to find a water source or pollen.

One taste, and you’ll be an advocate, too!

During the month of May, you may notice Spring in full blossom with vibrant flowers around every neighborhood corner and abundant produce aisles. You may notice the rich harvest colors, as the fruits and vegetables reach their peak freshness this month, like homegrown heirloom tomatoes and cherries. The list continues with spring lettuce, artichokes, mangoes, okra, radishes, rhubarb, Swiss chard, and zucchini.

However, this month, we are focusing on the natural beauty of fresh spring herbs.

Half a cup of fresh parsley, a flowering plant that is native to Mediterranean cultures, provides 108% of the Reference Daily Intake of Vitamin A, 53% of Vitamin C, 547% of Vitamin K, 11% of Folate, and 4% of Potassium. Meditteranean Feta & Garlic Roasted Potatoes INGREDIENTS: 2 lbs. Yukon baby potatoes 3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp. garlic powder 2 tsp. onion powder 1 tsp. Kosher salt 7- 8 oz. feta cheese, chopped into small pieces ½ red onion, finely minced 1 lemon, zest and juiced 2 Tbsp. thyme leaves ¼ cup parsley leaves, chopped ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper INSTRUCTIONS: 1. P reheat oven to 450F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.

2. C ut the Yukon baby potatoes into halves or quarters, then transfer to a large bowl. Add in the extra virgin olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, and kosher salt. Toss together until evenly combined.

3. S pread the potatoes evenly onto the prepared baking pan. Bake for 20 minutes, then flip to bake an additional 15-20 minutes, until crispy and golden brown.

4. I n the meantime, toss together the remaining ingredients (chopped feta cheese, lemon zest, lemon juice, chopped red onion, thyme leaves, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper).

5. A dd the crispy potatoes into the feta mixture, then toss to combine. Serve immediately and enjoy!

What-if, the worrisome words, arrive in the conscious spinning topics from safety and financial security to loved ones and pet health. Asking, “What can I do?” leads to a proactive decision to invest time in the ultimate insurance policy- valuable life skills comprising security, shelter, food, water, and medical care! In any emergency, from extreme weather to a personal disaster, you have the power to take charge of your fate by making plans and taking action!

Disasters and emergencies bring out the best in people – or the worst! As tempers flare, family members disperse rather than the intended goal of staying together! A feeling of panic is the result of the body’s automatic overproduction of a stress hormone called “cortisol.” As it travels to the brain, the ability to access critical thinking fails. Planning together helps each person know their responsibility and how to proceed without panic.

Staying Home The reassuring voice in our mind whispers, “We’ll never have to leave our home. It couldn’t possibly happen to us. Not in our community!” Every person says, “Not us. Not here!” While staying or leaving is uncertain, the goal to preparedness ensures you have a plan for almost every emergency situation.

Let’s define basic needs: •F amiliarity provides security in a well-provisioned home!

•C ommunity is an invaluable resource in times of difficulty.

Neighbors, whether you know them well or not, can come together to resolve immediate challenges!

•H omes using only electricity will require a secondary power source. Consider the ability to cook with a range fueled with propane, or using a wood stove for warmth.

•W ater is the most critical item! Consider an outside source such as a pool, pond, or creek. How far is it? If you have a quality filtration system, iodine tablets, or the ability to boil, you have water!

•T he body needs up to 2500 calories daily. Have you accrued items, whether vacuum sealed or dehydrated, that check off a range of carbohydrates (oatmeal, pasta, corn, beans, and chocolate), proteins (eggs, meat, seafood, nuts, yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk), and fats (olive and coconut oil, and lard?)

• Do you have pet food, and the needs of infants, young children and senior family members! Determine if your pharmacy offers 90-day prescriptions.

• Do you have any items worthy of a trade, such as fresh eggs, homemade goods, or knives?

Leaving Home In most “survival” literature, experts recommend “bugging out.” Many do not rent or own a cabin or secondary residence; instead, they conduct daily life from their vehicles. Odds are, you have essential items from food, water, a first aid kit, to personal backpacks prepared and ready to go- but where?

Did you perhaps laugh when family or close friends said, “If anything ever happens, please come to us!” Find out if the offer was genuine; otherwise, prepare a plan of action. Trying to imagine thousands of panicked people walking, biking, driving towards a viable food sources or highways sounds, yet again, impossible! One contingency plan may not be enough.

• Preplan your route, marking destinations 100 miles from your home. Be ready for roadblocks and alternative roads.

• Have a print-out of the plan!

• Keep several gas cans filled and readily available.

• You’ll need cash in small bills!

• If you have a means of protection, such as pepper spray, be sure to understand how it works. Never use a “weapon” without practicing!

•W ill you use LED camp lanterns, solar light bulbs, or battery headlamps? Don’t forget to invest in a solar battery pack?

What other purpose can the sun use heat for energy- a radio that has a USB port!

Evaluating the “what-ifs” allow you to go beyond your comfort of normalcy and safety and start thinking about a plan of action! Invite spouses, children, elder members of the family, and friends. Don’t wait until the moment is a reality! Planning relieves the mind and creates a feeling of empowerment!

Introducing Your Pet to the Littlest Members of the Family

you have a precious new baby joining the family or you’re having the grandkids stay for the summer, it’s important to plan ahead for how you’ll introduce them to your furry family members. It can be exciting for both parties to meet one another, but doing so in a safe and wellthought-out way is always best.

Even if your pets have experience with babies and small children, it’s always a smart idea to treat it like the first time and go in with a game plan that’s sensitive to the possibility that each time may be a little different. Both children and animals can have different temperaments at different times of day and with new people and experiences.

In order to have the best introduction and experience possible for the entire family, here are a few tips to ensure safety and comfort for both human and fur babies alike. u Make sure to read the room. Everyone is getting acquainted, so remember to take both human and furry friends’ feelings into account. Is your new baby particularly fussy today and screeching a lot? That may make your pets extra anxious. Can you tell if your cat’s tail is fluffed out, and she is a little more tense right now? An excited child getting close to pet her may not work in your favor. Wait until everyone seems to be on their best behavior before introductions take place. u Choose neutral ground for meetings. You’ll want to avoid introducing pets to their hopefully new, tiny best friend during meal times and sleep. Think about it—would you want to be waked up to meet someone new, or interrupted while you’re eating breakfast? For dogs, who can often be a little more territorial, it’s often recommended to have them meet outdoors or in a part of the home they aren’t overly attached to.

u Educate your littles about pets. Children are very interested in the world around them, and animals are no exception. For kids that are old enough to understand, they’ll be meeting a new furry friend, so take an opportunity beforehand to teach them how to best interact with the friend. How should they act around them? How should they not act? Does your pet love treats or ear scratches? Should they be aware of any specific behavior warnings your pet may exhibit if uncomfortable? u A little sniffing goes a long way. From puppies and cats to hamsters and bunny rabbits, letting your pet sniff your child is always a good idea before jumping into high-touch interactions. Ask your child to stick out their hand to see how your animal reacts. If you’re introducing a brand-new baby, have a piece of the baby’s clothing or a blanket they’ve used brought in first for the pets to sniff and get familiar with. u Don’t let your guard down just yet. Even if your pet has a sweet disposition and is interacting well with your child, it’s a good idea not to leave them unattended until you know for certain they are both comfortable with one another.

Dogs and cats can sometimes get spooked easily, and their animal instincts can kick in, especially when they aren’t quite comfortable yet with their small new friend. u Create lasting bonds beyond the first meeting. They say a dog is a man’s best friend, but truthfully, many animals can bond beautifully with people—especially kids! The most important step to creating relationships between your child and your pet is respect. Have a healthy respect for your animals and their boundaries and natural instincts, and do what you can to help create a happy and healthy first few interactions. You will see the relationship between the two blossom into a special and beautiful bond over time.

one chooses to board the topsy-turvy roller coaster ride of perimenopause! Permission sounds too much like a courtesy! Instead, the bumpy ride can wreak emotional, mental, and physical havoc on women’s lives!

Welcome to the Club!

A club comprising 37 million American women, ranging in age from 40 to 60, who understand each other, especially when the words, “Is it hot in here, or is it me?” call out to the room.

Instantly, curious smiles and nods appear! Without knowing when the clock chimed, perimenopause arrives. You’re not alone if you, too, feel irritable with a whole host of problems from difficulty sleeping to night sweats, weight gain and excess belly flab to new hormonal mood swings, loss of sexual urges, and forgetfulness. It’s an overwhelming list; however, every aspect is a chemical imbalance! As ovary production slows estrogen and progesterone levels, the snowball effect impacts the mind and body.

How to Tackle Change

We, too, must evolve by altering our daily habits and food intake. Perimenopause permits you to start pampering yourself!

• SELF-CARE: Start providing for your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs; therefore, take time to rest, enjoy friendships, join groups, pursue hobbies, and be present in the world.

• WEIGHT AWARENESS: Losing muscle around the abdomen, hips, and thighs can change the way your clothes fit without your being aware of it. The solution is to increase physical activity.

Grab the girls or the family and start an exercise regimen, such as walking, bicycling, taking yoga, or Pilates. Or, sign up to join a group cardio workout. Physical activity increases the production and repair of existing brain cells, fostering memory.

• CONSUME FEWER CALORIES: Sugar accounts for an additional 300 calories per day in the average American diet. It’s easy to surrender to baked goods, ice-cream, candy, and sugar-sweeteners found in soft drinks, juices, energy drinks, flavored waters, sweetened coffee, and tea. Changing habits by reducing the number of calories consumed begins by increasing nutrition. Boron-containing foods, such as green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, and legumes, will balance estrogen levels and prevent the onset of osteoporosis. It’s vital to consume more low-fat dairy products and eat less chicken and red meat.

The Kids are All Right – How to Stop Sweating the Small Stuff and Like your Kids Just as They Are

BY KAREN COOPER Acceptance is a magical thing. It gives us confidence. It makes us powerful. How often do we feel this way? Truly accepted for being ourselves? Truly seen and loved just as we are?

Probably not enough.

It’s hard to overlook imperfections and things that aren’t the way we hoped they would be.

It’s also hard not to let our mood or our own expectations dictate how we behave toward the ones we love the most. “Pick your battles,” I always tell myself. Easier said than done!

Thinking about the ones our words and actions impact the most…what if picking our battles could change our children’s future?

There is much evidence to show that positive reinforcement produces positive results. Call it Positive Parenting, Operant Conditioning or “Catch them being good.” It all produces the same result. Reinforce good behavior with a reward. The reward can be praise, a hug, a treat…whatever you decide it should be…just keep it positive.

Here are some specific ways it can work: LET EMPATHY BE YOUR GUIDE: Of course there are rules and expectations, but everything is not black and white. We know in our own adult lives that things happen to throw us for a loop—in our jobs, our relationships, our moods, etc. The same thing is true for our kids. Give them grace when they mess up and figure out why, before you go straight for the punishment.

MAKE YOUR EXPECTATIONS CLEAR: If your child isn’t sure what you want him or her to do, he/she is set up for failure right from the get-go.

GET TO THE ROOT OF ANY PROBLEMS THAT EXIST WITH YOUR CHILD: If you are having to ask your child again and again to comply with your requests and it is creating conflict, there may be a bigger issue at hand. Giving them your undivided attention can help. Are they feeling overwhelmed by something else? Are they upset about something they aren’t telling you about? Do they feel that what you’re asking is unfair? Lecturing and nagging will only make things worse and undermine your relationship. Show your child that what matters to him or her matters to you, and figure things out together.

CHECK YOURSELF: Take a look at your own worries and expectations and think about what you can do about them. For me this took some soul searching and figuring out how to deal with my own issues, which should not become their problems. It can be hard to accept that in some ways our kids might not meet the image we had in mind for them. A time comes when getting honest with yourself is necessary, and understanding why you might be pushing too hard can benefit everyone!

BE GENEROUS WITH YOUR LOVE, YOUR PRAISE AND YOUR ATTENTION: Regardless of where your child is at any given moment, remind him or her how special and wonderful he/she is. Don’t make your approval performance-based.

This certainly doesn’t mean they get a pass for not meeting their goals and expectations. There are always consequences for not meeting expectations, and those are something you can decide on as the parent, or you and your child can decide together. I like to get buy-in from my children on their consequences, because it packs a bigger punch when they have helped set them up.

REWARD POSITIVE BEHAVIOR: Rewarding positive behavior begets more positive behavior…or so the theory goes. If the young person knows they will be rewarded for their actions, and the reward matters to them more than exhibiting the negative behavior, you have a winner! Do everything you can to find a reward that will matter. Sometimes the reward that matters most is a parent’s pride and happiness that the kid is doing the right thing. So make sure you are telling the kid that often. If they mess up, find out why and try, try again!

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted Sriman to find a safe way to give back to the community without putting himself and his team of helpers at risk. After doing some research, Sriman stumbled upon a great opportunity to give back while spending time outdoors—two things that are near and dear to his heart.

Achieving Eagle rank in Boy Scouts is no simple feat. To earn this ranking, scouts must fulfill a number of requirements, which include earning at least 21 merit badges, serving in a position of responsibility, and completing a service project for the community. For his Eagle Scout project, Sriman wanted to make a huge impact.

The popular Sunrise Disc Golf Course at Sunrise United Methodist Church is much loved among locals and Sunrise UMC church members. Since it is maintained solely by volunteers and donations, Sriman decided that he could benefit his community by giving the course some much-needed TLC. Orchestrated by Sunrise UMC members Jimmy Williams and Darren Hickerson, construction on the nine-hole disc golf course commenced in 2018. Since that year, the Sunrise Disc Golf Course has been a hot commodity in the Lewisville community, and happens to be free of charge to the public. The course allows for wholesome family fun for all ages that takes place in nature, as opposed to in front of a television or tablet screen. Even while he and his team were working on the project during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sriman recalls seeing 15 to 20 disc golf players enjoying themselves throughout the course.

The project concluded this year on Saturday, March 20th, and took place over two Saturdays for four to five hours each day. The woods surrounding the course needed to be cleared for tee number 18, as the area was completely overgrown with bushes and debris from the church playground. Throughout the project, Sriman was pleased to have plenty of help from his fellow troop members from Troop 934, in addition to the help of adults. The group cleared wood and debris in order to build six platforms for

disc golf players to stand on in order to throw their discs (tees 6, 7, 8, 9, 15, and 18). After digging a couple of inches into the ground for each platform’s wooden base, crushed granite was used to level the tees out. Papers and sand were added to fill in any remaining holes.

Four years ago, Sriman joined Boy Scouts due to his love of camping and being outdoors. Once he started becoming more involved with his troop, he was surprised to learn about the numerous volunteer activities he would have the opportunity to partake in. Although the project isn’t complete until it has been approved by the Senior Patrol Leader and the Old Hickory Council, Sriman is on the fast track to earning his Eagle rank. He is grateful to have had such a supportive troop and parents, and was pleased that the group ran into very few obstacles while performing manual labor for the course renovation. Sriman thanks the volunteers from Troop 934, Sunrise United Methodist Church, and Darren Hickerson for all of their support throughout the project.

While Sriman is currently only 14 years old, after graduating from high school, he hopes to attend college and major in a science-based field. In his free time, he enjoys biking and playing basketball. Additionally, he is an avid piano player and has been taking lessons for six years.

Start with Kraut Sauerkraut, despite the workout, is one of the easiest foods to ferment.

Consider taking the first step! In the process, you’ll understand the role of salt and the value of airlocks. Be particular in choosing your vegetable. The cabbage head should be firm with crisp, shiny leaves!

Bypass the one pre-cut and wrapped in plastic!

•A fter coring and shredding, adding thinly-cut vegetables to a bowl, start salting and rubbing the mineral into the leaves. Immediately, the walls will begin to break down and release the juices. Keep massaging and squeezing the liquids. Allow to rest, cover with a towel, for an hour; then, return to massage and squeeze. Continue until you have enough brine to press into a crock or jar. It’s a long day, but worth it!

Don’t forget to taste!

•N ever add more water, only salt or vegetables that provide water, such as turnips, sliced onions, carrots, and beets.

•T ransfer the contents into the jar slowly and always tamp to remove the air bubbles. Allow four inches to remain at the top, termed “headspace,” for expansion.

• Add an airlock!

We select foods not because of the health value; instead, we crave particular complex flavors that are sometimes familiar or new and unimagined! Beyond the store-bought jar, the curious gardener or first-time canner seeks their own fermentation journey. It begins by perusing online recipes and reading books by experts like Sandor Ellix Katz and Kirsten and Christopher Shockey. The next step is to gather supplies and start the enriching experience of fermentation, from harvesting vegetables to plucking fresh fruit directly from trees or bushes!

Equipment The porcelain crock used to have a special place in the household until canning season began. Perhaps, it’s now still in your home, unused, but reveling in memories. While it may be too large for a beginner; it certainly hasn’t lost its usefulness!

What other tools are needed?

THE CONTAINER: Glass jars allow you to witness firsthand what is happening without committing to four gallons.

(Plastic, such as a three or five-gallon bucket, offers a cheap option to make a large batch, but consider using stone or glass as the vessel.

AIRLOCKS: Attached to the top of a Mason jar, the airlock allows air or gases to escape, preventing molds and microorganisms from developing. For the beginner, the airlock system creates a “fool-proof” fermentation! Kits are available, or purchasing the lids and locks together is also possible.

TAMPER: Usually constructed from wood and used to press the ferment into the container.

SLICERS: Numerous options to slice, shred, or chop; therefore, consider a food processor or “mandolin” if you don’t have one!

•P lace your jar(s) on a cookie sheet to collect exiting brine, out of direct light and in an area between 55 and 75 degrees. If not a cooled location, refrigerate!

•C heck your pH levels daily. The goal is 4.6; although, it can be lower.

Time depends on the size of the batch! And, take the time to taste it!

Making a Paste Once you tried your first fermentation and discovered the thrill of success, it’s time to open the door to your favorite spices and flavors, perhaps, in a paste, sauce, or chutney.

If you enjoy the aroma of basil, this recipe is ideal for you!

1. A ny number of leaves and stems will do. Just keep in mind that a fourth-pound of basil equals a fourth-teaspoon of unrefined salt.

2. S et your food processor to “pulse” until it becomes a paste; then, slowly add salt. Stop when the brine level rises above the solids.

3. P our slowly into a jar and tamp; then place a sealable bag within the jar and fill with water to create weight. Add the lid.

4. S et aside with a baking sheet underneath in a cool location out of direct sunlight for four days. Check by taste. It should have a pickling quality!

5. S tore in glass jars and tamp with headroom. Keep refrigerated for one year!

Adding a few garlic cloves to the basil will transition the paste to a pesto.

The world of fermentation will change the flavoring of your future meals.

Rules of Germinating Saved Seeds

catalogs arrived by mail in January, teasing the tempted gardener to dream of sun, hand tools, tilled soil, and a variety of seed packets. Planning the garden season begins long before beautiful, colorful pictures arrive in 20- to 100-page magazines. Hand-collected seeds or bags retained from last year have occupied the cold seasons in a basement or freezer. The last frost date was mid-April; therefore, let’s begin preparing seeds for germination!

What is a Seed?

The question sounds elementary; however, it’s essential to understand that seeds are living organisms that are capable of absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. What lies inside is an embryo protected by the “seed coat” or shell. As the embryo receives moisture and the warmth of the soil and light, it begins to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen—nature’s way of preventing extinction. As long as the embryo remained sealed, it is likely a viable seed, ready to germinate!

Heirloom Versus GMO Seeds Across 50 years, open-pollination seeds, termed “Heirloom” seeds, resulted from only the best-performing plants in gardens.

Gardeners quickly claimed the Heirloom seeds outperformed storebought produce and were saved, shared, sold, and remain the ideal and most sought-after seed.

Genetically modified organisms, termed “GMOs,” are derived from heirloom and hybrids, a cross-breed of two plants, to alter their traits using specialized equipment in a laboratory. The seeds may contain animal or bacterial genes, herbicides, and DNA to create a hardy shell, when heirloom or hybrids would not survive. While GMO crops are immune to pesticides, how safe is the harvest?

Start asking nearby homeowners if they use GMO seeds. Their plants’ pollen can travel for miles,

infiltrating non-GMO plants. Once it adheres to an heirloom, its generational history ends.

Dated Seeds A seed’s goal is to perform a job, bloom, and prosper, possibly developing fruit. Regardless of the seed’s age, the outcome is to produce a nutritious vegetable, fruit, herb, or flower. Even within the perfect storage conditions, airtight with less than 10 percent humidity, within a room below 40 degrees, age impacts germination rates. Some seeds may produce less than 40% germination, while others may endure beyond six years. Labels help growers understand the vitality of individual packets.

Fruit and Vegetable Seed Averages: • TWO YEARS: chives, corn, lavender, okra, onion, oregano, parsley, parsnips, pepper, rue, and sage; •T HREE YEARS: chamomile, leeks, lemon balm, mints, thyme, and tomatillo • FOUR YEARS: asparagus, borage, common beans, carrots, chicory, fennel, spinach, and peas; • FIVE YEARS: broccoli, broad beans, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cilantro, coriander, dill, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, melons, radishes, tomatoes, turnips, and watermelon; •S IX YEARS PLUS: basil, eggplant, lettuce, celery, cucumbers, ground cherry, pumpkins, strawberry, squash, Swiss chard, and zucchini.

Try the Baggie Method An extra step often bypassed is to soak seeds in water overnight, the day prior to planting. A good way to test your seeds is to create a greenhouse environment. Plastic bags act as a vessel to transfer moisture into droplets; therefore, place a half-sheet paper towel inside a sealable baggie. With a spoon, drip water into the center and allow to spread to all corners, without pooling any excess at the bottom. A spoon works great to equally space your seeds between the two sheets. Seal! Place the baggie in a warm spot, such as a window. After a few days, check the moisture levels and germination. You should see growth. The number of seedlings will determine the viability of your remaining seeds. (Allow the bags to be a vessel until you can transplant them to a pot or directly into the soil.)

Removing Seeds from the Freezer Refrigeration requires seeds to maintain a temperature for the life of its containment. One power outage and a humidity change by onepercent can lower the seeds’ germination rate by 50%. Freezing, on the other hand, is a practice used by seed banks around the world.

Containing the glass jar with a silica gel pack to remove moisture levels and vacuum sealing increases future planting success. Seeds need approximately 24 hours to reach room temperature before removing the seed packets.

Not every seed has the exact same requirements. Foxglove, for instance, needs darkness to germinate well. Most vegetables have a relatively easy time transforming into a sprout; however, don’t give up too quickly on your plants. Beans require up to 14 days to germinate, while eggplant, celery, and cucumber range between 14 to 24 days. Most importantly, don’t forget to water when the surface is dry!

Cheese,

the accident of ancient days that became one of our most versatile and popular foods! Legend explains that a chemical reaction occurred after milk remained in the lining of an animal’s stomach. Enzymes then separated the liquid and created whey, while the solids developed into curds. Voila! The creation of cheese! It’s the milk that influences taste. Four thousand years ago, milk was obtained from more than just cows, sheep, and goats; buffalo, yak, and camel milk offered varying types of essential vitamins and minerals, as well. Just five quarts will produce one pound of cheese!

Cheesemaking is fascinating. After the liquids drain, the curds can make cottage or Farmer’s cheese, which is a type of spread; or the solids are infused with additional ingredients to create a wheel of over one-hundred different types of cheese.

Fat is just one ingredient which gives cheese its rich texture and delicious taste.

Most cheeses contain high amounts of calcium and protein and provide sources of vitamin B-12. Rather than focus on the amount of saturated fat and sodium, consider that a one-ounce slice offers a satisfying and nutrient-dense snack, or flavor to a meal. For instance, a firm cheese, such as Cheddar, Muenster, or Swiss, contains 100 calories, 180 mg of calcium, and eight grams of fat.

Who benefits from cheese?

Children, adolescents, and pregnant women would benefit from the source of calcium and added calories. The best options are cheddar, cottage cheese, goat cheese, halloumi, mozzarella, and ricotta.

Who else?

• Women threatened by osteoporosis, a weakening of the bones, should include

blue and feta cheese, mozzarella, and Swiss cheese in their diets.

• Enjoy cheddar, cottage cheese, and mozzarella for gut health.

• Lactose intolerant individuals should consume cheddar, Gouda, Parmesan, and Swiss cheese.

• Eating cheese helps lower blood pressure levels!

At the end of a meal, eat a small slice of cheese! Cheddar, or another type of aged cheese, will help prevent cavities by neutralizing the mouth’s acids.

What are the most nutritious types?

1. BLEU CHEESE: Containing 33% of the regular daily intake of calcium, the most of any cheese variety. It is a necessary nutrient for optimal bone health.

2. COTTAGE CHEESE: A protein-enriched snack, which offers the trace element, selenium; this is a helpful mineral to reduce chronic inflammation. Cottage cheese is rich in vitamin B-12, which helps maintain the health of nerve and blood cells and boost energy levels.

3. FETA CHEESE: A soft yet salty, white cheese made from either sheep’s or goat’s milk. Although high in sodium, the type of animal milk provides “conjugated linoleic acid,” CLA, which aids in reducing body fat; therefore, it’s a delicious cheese to add to meals.

4. GOAT CHEESE, Known as Chevre: The creamy, tangy flavor adds to its favorability as a spread or crumble.

High in protein, calcium, and iron, the cheese is easy to digest, since it is lower in lactose than cow’s milk.

5. M OZZARELLA: As a soft, white cheese with high moisture content, it contains fewer calories than other types, and has less sodium. Studies show its value in improving the immune system and gut health. And, as a fermented daily supplement, it fights inflammation.

Need a quick snack? Start eating string cheese!

6. R ICOTTA: Made from cow’s, goat’s, buffalo, or sheep’s milk, the whey proteins are beneficial amino acids.

“Whey” promotes muscle growth, heart health, and weight management!

7. S WISS CHEESE: As gases release during the fermentation process, holes form to distinguish the unique Swiss cheese. If the goal is to monitor salt intake or high blood pressure, start consuming more Swiss!

8. P ARMESAN: A calcium- and phosphorus-enriched cheese vital for bone health, lactose intolerance, and GI related symptoms.

“Say cheese!” It’s a simple command intended to promote a smile toward the photographer. The phrase, ironically, arrived in the 1940s. The “ch” combination followed by the long “ee” incites every individual to show off dimples and a wide grin, capturing happiness from those posing. A survey suggests 96% of the population favor the taste of cheese and associate it with pleasure! Let’s agree—the Victorian era could not compete with the wellestablished phrase. Few would produce a smile over, “Say prunes!”

Don’t Transplant Me!

you recall your last relocation endeavor?

Stress levels undoubtedly elevated! Interestingly, similar feelings occur in another multicellular organism, a plant!

Leaving one location is like tearing off excess roots. The act of a “transplant” can sometimes lead to “shock.” It takes time to adapt to an unfamiliar setting while investigating the ample room to grow and expand into a larger “home,” whether it’s a pot or underground. The new environment requires healthy conditions to promote growth; yet, if a transplant doesn’t occur, the home will stunt the potential of size and eventually cause noticeable signs of stress, such as wilting limbs and dying branches, loss of fruit or flowers, and, in time, death. 99% of the plant world requires room to grow. Less than one percent have chosen their restrictive environment. Through signs, a plant will deteriorate if it experiences root disturbances!

Indeed, very dramatic!

BALLOON FLOWER: Also named the Chinese or Japanese bellflower, the three-inch blossom appears in pink, white, and blue. Although it stands three feet tall, the diameter may extend to 18 inches, producing new shoots each spring. Underground is a fleshy root system that becomes easily

damaged if disturbed. Rather than move, consider cutting back select limbs.

CARROTS: A pen-tip is roughly the same size as a carrot seed.

Despite the extra expense, consider buying the prepackaged convenience called “seed tape.” As the process of germination occurs, fragile roots establish a home within the soil. Unless the gardener chooses to use a deep container for growing, it’s wise to start with seed in March, August, and September.

CORN: Most root systems remain close to the surface, while embedding a taproot deep down to anchor the plant.

Healthy seeds will germinate in two to four days, and with ample water, proliferate. A hard-coated, wrinkled, or large seed, such as that of beans, corn, peas, pumpkin, squash, sunflower, and sweet peas, benefits from soaking for a maximum of 24 hours before planting. The act boosts the health of plants. Due to frost, sow seeds no earlier than May. CUCUMBER: Gardening centers lure hopeful growers through the appeal of buying thriving plants. Cucumbers, like many plants, suffer from transplant shock. Environmental conditions need to be stable

for the plant to survive. The soil temperature, a minimum of 70 degrees, and direct sun exposure will aid in healthy growth. If necessary, staple black plastic pieces around the stem. Wait until late May to early June to plant.

HOLLYHOCK: Similar to a hibiscus, the petals of the hollyhock are striking and fragile. Winds can snap stalks if not planted in a secure location.

The challenge in transplanting is its need for moisture, and the entire root system. Wait until late fall. One day before, water the plant thoroughly and prepare a new hole, twice as wide as the expected root ball and the same depth. On the day of extraction, fill the new hole with water. Carefully remove the root ball and try not to break any extended systems.

Use a bucket; fill halfway with water, to transfer the hollyhock to its new location.

MILKWEED: “Calling all Monarch butterflies!” Did you know the only plant that provides a source of food for the Monarch is the milkweed? Due to the fewer number of milkweed growing, the Monarch’s number has dwindled. Although milkweed can grow wild, most gardeners find its location rather inconvenient. The difficulty in

transplanting is the taproot or the central anchor of the plant.

If you attempt to dig or pull it out, it will likely snap and kill the plant.

PUMPKIN: A harvest in October requires planting in June at a depth three times the seed’s diameter. Due to its rapid growth, pre-grown plants may not embed their roots and thrive like the germinated seed. Two success points: pumpkins need water to extend energy and moisture to the fruit, and avoid planting alongside potatoes.

SQUASH: You have until the end of May to plant squash plants. Consider transplanting them to a larger pot and give them extended time to grow. Often, small plants are susceptible to cucumber beetles and slugs, while developed transplants are more immune.

Spend each morning tending to your plants by extracting nutrient-hungry weeds and thoroughly watering. Large leaves such as pumpkin and squash can produce a colony of aphids. COVID

we are over a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, and I think we can all say we’ve learned a thing or two from these unprecedented (in our lifetime anyway) circumstances. I know our family has learned to count our blessings, how to tolerate one another more graciously, and what a wonderful thing it is to be able to stay connected with the people we love. On that note, we have identified some helpful Apps that have gotten us through the difficult lockdown days and reminded us to stay hopeful, because this is not forever, but only for a season, and we will make it through!

Zoom The pandemic has created a Zoom boom!

In the last part of 2019, Zoom reported 10 million “daily participants”; and by April 2020 the number had climbed to over 300 million.

There are many videoconferencing options, including Skype, Google Hangouts, Microsoft Teams and Cisco Webex. All of these services have their advantages.

However, Zoom is what the Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools chose to use when schools went virtual, and many other Zoomers chose the service because of its relative simplicity. Just click a link and you’re soon Zooming with others.

Door Dash I have to put this one near the top because although it can seem a little decadent (especially in nonpandemic times) and it can become pricy if you use it too much… it has been an app that has just made my family happy. I mean it has given us joy (true joy) in the difficult days when restaurants were closed and we wanted our favorite foods. We are a family that loves to eat and door dash with its no- contact delivery, prompt and reliable service was a friend to us! Uber Eats and Grub Hub are also in this category, I just don’t have the same experience with their service.

House Party House Party is another app that has been useful (more for the kids than for the adults).

It has allowed them to stay in touch with friends and have easy group chats. This app lets you know when you have a friend “in the house” and allows you to chat in groups of eight people. There are also built-in games you can play with your chat group like “Uno” and “Trivia.” Pretty cool!

Collaborative Spotify Playlist This has been a fun pastime in our family and a way to learn about each other. Who knew we actually liked some of the same music? Spotify allows you to sign up for a family plan where each member has their own designated account. It also allows users to create collaborative playlists that give friends and family the rights to add, delete or organize songs together. You can get really creative and even amuse each other with this feature. For example, I love adding “Air Supply” songs to my 17-year-old’s playlists.

NextDoor In the first place, Nextdoor is a great way to get to know your neighbors. In the second place it’s a way to find out all the things you never knew were happening in and around your neighborhood. There are lots of great benefits to using this app—getting referrals for almost anything, finding out the holiday trash pick-up schedule, following lost pet updates, learning about new stores and restaurants…so many other things! Speaking of trash pick-up…I’m personally on the look-out for the bulk pick-up schedule in my neighborhood. One woman’s trash is another’s treasure!

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube Who doesn’t love movies and TV? I love both, and my husband and the kids can be happy watching YouTube videos for hours at a time…especially when our other activities and social outlets have been limited. Planting Rare - Yet Native Fruits

the city limits, the scene quickly changes from houses to miles of open fields. In May, blooming flowers catch the eye of drivers, perhaps for the first time. Although they’re quite different in definition from wildflowers, these trees, shrubs, and flowers are indeed growing in the wild, their seeds scattered by the winds to beautify our state. In the blur from the window, identifying individual species is virtually impossible. But just imagine the list of rare plants native to our location that could further flourish with a little human help! With some assistance in locating specific plants at a nursery, consider stepping outside your usual flora choices and instead choose a unique, fruitful tree, shrub, or plant that will benefit our creatures, insects, and flyers. You can grow plants from cuttings or purchase seeds and live plants from a reliable source.

What is Propagation? Walks allow the eye to take notice of flowers in their natural environment. How often have you plucked a blossom simply because the fragrance or coloring appealed to you? Rather than allow the stem to die, you have the means to facilitate the reproduction of a plant through propagation! It’s a goal you can achieve regularly. English Ivy, a spider plant, and even woody plants, such as six-inch stems with healthy shoots from elderberry or butterfly bushes, will grow roots if placed in water. Try it!

The Wild Elderberry Bush Along roads and ditches, a passerby will see a shrub growing tall and wide with white flowers, and between August and September, purple berries! If dark purple

stems are present, leading to the berry, then, you most likely have found a wild elderberry bush! The most popular species are the European Sambucus Nigra, and the American Sambucus canadensis, where you can find several varieties. When purchasing, find a nursery that focuses on growing elderberry plants. You’ll be most pleased with two-year-old barerooted plants.

PLANTING: Roots often grow near the surface, while the taproot acts as an anchor.

As a rule, dig a hole three times as wide as the root system. Elderberries thrive with a combination of 1 part sand to two parts soil. Situate the roots near the surface; avoid burying the trunk. Water thoroughly and often! Add mulch to help maintain a level of moisture.

Paw-Paw Trees Hikers will come across a grove of 12-to20-foot trees whose dark green, oblong tropical leaves appear out of place in North Carolina. The paw-paw has distinguishing dark brown buds that transition into maroon flowers. Appearing in clusters is the fruit. When ripe, the fruit will have a sweet custard flavoring, similar to a banana. Paw paws are mostly disease-free and resistant to fungus. Pollen-seeking insects will love their source of pollen and pollinate the grove!

PLANTING: If you have a location that receives morning shade and evening filtered sun, consistent moist ground, you may have the perfect spot!

Juneberry Bush North Carolina sought a plant more reliable

and hardier than the finicky blueberry.

The result—the Jennybelle Juneberry! Its fruit is dark purple with tiny, soft seeds and tastes similar to dark cherries. Highly nutritious, and a rare fruit specimen is ready for harvest, yielding four to six pounds of berries, by mid-June!

PLANTING: As a medium-sized bush, it tolerates coarse sand to silty clay in soils with a pH level of 4.8 to 8.0 in full sun to part shade! Consider planting four feet between bushes and be ready for presummer picking after the third year!

“NC Wild Flower of the Year” Our state Botanical Gardens holds 300 acres of land protected by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Every year it names a specific wildflower and offers free seed packets while supplies last. The 2021 winner is the “American Beautyberry,” a shrub that forms clusters of pink flowers in spring and summer; yet, deepens to a vibrant shade of magenta in fall. Some describe it as “neon-violet.” The berries are a source of food for the wildlife.

PLANTING: Found in the understory of woodlands, it requires a similar environment to thrive: direct sunlight with a high pH level and plenty of water!

NATURAL PEST CONTROL

The

young, frail seedling needs protection, time, excellent soil, and water to gain strength and expand its roots in the ideal environment.

The seen and unseen attackers pose a threat, whether it’s disease, insects, or animals, damaging to the point of hurting or killing the tender, young plant. Even trampling may impact the possibility of recovery. The gardener needs a plan of action before seeds germinate or established plants begin to grow. Rather than invest in toxic, unknown chemicals that cause harm to more than just pests, consider alternative options, such as natural control methods, companion planting, fencing, and traps.

Natural Control Methods As gardeners, we think a plant’s success lies above ground; yet, it’s the roots and the richness of the soil that control health, growth, and vitality. Use the state of wellness above ground to determine the condition at the plant’s foundation. The earth is alive with billions of microorganisms inhabiting compostable matter, such as leaf mold, grass clippings, crushed eggshells, banana peels, and coffee grounds. (If not, begin to add such items to boost the mineral content of your garden.)

Start by using a good powder.

• DIATOMACEOUS EARTH: A natural substance, that when sprinkled, has small rough edges to slice up small soft-bodied insects, while not harming earthworms. Despite its tiny grains of powder, it smothers insect larvae and controls parasites, from aphids and squash bugs to mice and rabbits. It’s the perfect organic insecticide.

Companion Planting Blossoms are one of the best solutions for a vegetable garden. Flowers are much more than pretty colors. celosia, rudbeckia, snapdragons, sunflowers, sweet peas, zinnias, and so many others, including herbs, provide food and habitat for beneficial insects when you balance vegetables with rows of flowers. Why use pesticides when an array of pollinators will not only come to you, whether you live in urban or rural areas, and help your cause by eating harmful bugs!

Fascinating results will happen when you allow the flowers to stand guard and fight!

• A viable method to prevent overwatering is building mounds of dirt. As rain rolls down, the roots receive the moisture they need.

• Start researching companion planting.

Anise and basil, for instance, help repel

insects and disease, while improving tomatoes’ flavor. Planting oregano with broccoli repels the white cabbage fly!

Weeding An easy, low-cost way to boost moisture and prevent weeds is to add several newspaper layers, either around the soil or over top of the mulch. Black plastic also works wonders.

Otherwise, take some time each morning to remove an area of weeds with a tiller, hoe, or hand tool. You’ll eliminate the competition and provide all the sunlight and nutrients a plant needs to survive!

Fencing The eye-catching garden fence can be charming while keeping out pesky critters.

Keep in mind, however, that groundhogs and rabbits are diggers; therefore, bury the posts six inches below ground, and that will deter most animals. On the other hand, deer can jump 12 feet; so, focus on the animals you can restrain. Smaller fencing such as tomato cages or trellis’ can work wonders for fruit or vegetables that grow from either tall plants or vines.

TIP: A luminum foil, surprisingly, is quite effective in a garden. It’s reflective, somewhat sturdy, and makes noise if brushed. Try it!

Traps Did you know that yellow jackets are carnivores? Rather than purchase traps, try filling a bucket with water and adding a few drops of dishwashing liquid; then, tie a few pieces of chicken to a narrow board and lay it across the bucket’s surface. After a few hours or a day, check the bucket. You’ll collect hundreds of yellow jackets, but don’t expect this trap to work for all insects.

Research to find out about others!

The Heroes of the Garden To a pollinator, a flower appears like an electromagnetic light, sending out energy in ultraviolet colors. Holding a large sign, “Calling all butterflies!” isn’t necessary. If you plant flowers containing pollen and nectar, they will come! So, who are the efficient heroes of the insect world? Ants, assassin bugs, bats, dragonflies, soldier beetles, butterflies, hummingbirds, moths, tens of thousands of bees, spiders, and wasps. It’s important to identify the fluttering, flying, and walking heroes! Create a welcome mat by planting flowers, adding birdhouses, birdbaths, or a bee hotel! You have this! we hopefully see a light at the end of the COVID tunnel, our community organizations continue to be creative in order to comply with COVID restrictions and continue their mission, including annual events.

LEAD (Learning Everyday Accomplishing Dreams) Girls provides tools and resources to low-income/ at-risk preteen girls helping them become productive citizens and active leaders in their communities. LEAD equips and mentors girls to aspire and achieve greatness academically, emotionally, and creatively.

In lieu of the annual Soiree held in honor of LEAD Girls, a special virtual video event and awards ceremony was held on March 28th, marking the 5th anniversary of LEAD Girls. The event chairs were Mary Jamis and Dr. Paula Wilkins and the honorary chair was Natalie Broyhill. The video event showcased the many accomplishments of LEAD Girls in 2020, honored four girls with awards, and celebrated the nonprofit’s 5th anniversary.

LEAD Girls was thrilled to work on the celebration video with Gregg Jamback of Swiftwater Media and Nate Berry of Lightwater Video Productions. Supporters were encouraged to visit the website or Facebook page to view the video. It is still available by visiting: www.leadgirls.org/2021-soiree/.

There was also a silent auction—just as if the participants were there in person. It opened two weeks prior and was a huge success with donations from local businesses and a special partnership with Artworks Gallery artists.

To recognize the event “in person” for the entire community, on the evening of the 28th, Kimpton Cardinal Hotel lit up their building in LEAD’s signature teal and pink colors to further celebrate LEAD and their 5th anniversary. Four of the staff members and the Honorary Chair (Natalie Broyhill) met at the Kimpton to witness the colors firsthand, joined by their families and Tommy Hicks, Community Engagement Coordinator of Truliant Federal Credit Union. “It was such a special experience and honor to see our colors illuminated above the city we serve,” said Britney Dent, Director of Programs.

“Although we could not celebrate in person, we felt it was important to continue our annual soiree. We wanted to celebrate the work that we have done for the past five years towards alleviating the barriers to success that our girls face,” said Joy Nelson Thomas, Founder and Executive Director. “More importantly, we wanted to honor the perseverance and resilience of our girls. Despite the many challenges this year has presented them between virtual learning and social distancing in a very formative period of their lives, they have embraced these challenges with grit and grace and we are so proud of their accomplishments.”

Thomas continues, “The funds raised by our Soiree Silent Auction and LEADher Circle donations will be used to sustain our programming for the 250 girls we serve so they have continued opportunities to grow and thrive this year. Their grit inspires us, so we were inspired to make this year’s virtual Soiree a success for them!”

you heard of The Chosen yet?

If you have, you’re in good company. Popularity for The Chosen is soaring— for good reason. If you’ve already watched it— you understand why.

I’ve been watching since late 2019 and have enthusiastically told everyone I know they should watch it, too. Admittedly, maybe to the point of obnoxiousness, but seriously—the show is AH. MAZ. ING. All the hype about it—trust me. It’s accurate.

For those who haven’t heard yet, The Chosen is a crowd-funded television series based on the Gospels. You can watch it for free on the app, or if you’re a subscriber to PureFlix, you can find it there, too. It’s recently become available on DVD and BlueRay. If I’ve missed an available platform, just go to watch.angelstudios.com/ thechosen. They will tell you all the ways you can access it.

And when I say “free,” technically, that’s not true. Online streaming has a cost, and to make it accessible, those who have watched it for free have done so because contributions made to the program are designed to “pay it forward.”

It’s a really cool concept.

The series has been carefully researched using the Bible and support from Bible experts— including Messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel of Fusion Global Ministries; Dr. Doug Huffman of Talbot School of Theology; and Father David Guffey, a Catholic priest representing Family Theatre Productions. These consultants bring a wide range of expertise to the table, including a thorough understanding of Jewish tradition and Biblical history. “It’s a combination of historical context, Biblical context, and artistic imagination,” according to writer/director Dallas Jenkins.

So what’s it about? Jesus. It’s an opportunity to take the Gospels and begin to put flesh, blood, and emotions to the people who interacted with, and were changed by, Jesus. I can tell you for myself—I have a whole new level of appreciation for Jesus’ miracles, as well as the

reactions of the disciples. These were imperfect men who were products of their culture who followed the perfect Son of God. It’s fascinating to watch these Biblical stories take place in such a tremendous way—unlike any other Biblical movie/show I’ve ever seen.

The actors who star in the show have the look and feel of Jewish people—the actor who plays Peter, for instance, is an Israeli actor.

Their accents aren’t British, which is huge in my book—since that seems to have been the trend in every other faith-based show or movie I’ve ever watched. It just feels natural. Yes, there are some creative backstories applied—but nothing that would be contradictory to Scripture. Any creative backstory used is based on “it could have happened,” but doesn’t take away from the heart of the Gospel. For instance, Matthew the Tax collector is portrayed as if he were on the autistic spectrum. That probably wasn’t the case, but it’s an artistic license, and personally, I love it. Fiction or not, the way Matthew is being depicted, with all his mannerisms and response, have made him one of my favorite characters.

As of this publication, the second season has been released. Those who are interested in watching should start back even further than Season 1. The pilot is called The Shepherd and is a 30-minute short episode based on the birth of Jesus from the shepherds’ perspective.

Season One episodes include: “I Have Called You By Name,” “Shabbat,” “Jesus Loves the Little Children,” “The Rock on Which It is Built,” “The Wedding Gift,” “Indescribable Compassion,” “Invitations,” and “I Am He.” Season Two has not been completely released, but episodes one and two are titled “Thunder” and “I Saw You.” Y’all, I’m the worst when it comes to spoilers (I will always read the last page of a book first).

So I’m going to stop before I give too much away—it’s entirely possible, since I really want to tell you about each and every character I love.

And tell you all about my favorite episodes.

But I hope you’ll take the time to discover The Chosen for yourself. It’s blessed my life so much.

MINUTE for your Minister Shattered Dreams

BY PHIL LEWIS What happens when ministry doesn’t turn out the way you thought it would? This year of Covid masks and shutdowns was never part of your plans for your church.

You might feel blindsided by this twist, and it is certainly not what you signed up for. When God called you to be a pastor, it was when people actually came to church and you could see their faces and read their body language to know if they were hearing and responding to the message God had given you.

You might feel like you are drowning with the weight of dwindling offerings, loneliness, differing opinions, and funerals where you can’t even offer a hug.

This is a new season of ministry that seminary never prepared you for. You aren’t alone if you’ve been thinking about throwing in the towel and walking away.

While we don’t understand why God has (seemingly) allowed our world to be turned upside down, we can trust that He does have a plan; HE was not blindsided. Do not doubt in the dark what God has shown you in the Light. God is still God. He called you to feed his sheep, and though He never promised that this journey would be easy, He did promise never to leave you or forsake you.

He is a God who accepts your questions, fears, and disappointments.

Only He can take the shattered pieces of your broken plans and make them into something new. He is still at work, still creating masterpieces from the broken pieces of your ideal of what ministry should look like. Just remember what He was able to do with only a handful of dust!

Faith and Third Place What is your third place? Are you sharing or experiencing God’s love in your third place?

And I’m not talking about winning a bronze medal, or how I placed in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Cub Scout Pinewood Derby in 1978.

“Third place” comes from sociologist Ray Oldenburg, who described three places where most people carry out their lives: First: home; Second: work (or school); and that Third place: somewhere else. This “third place” is where you hang out—where you spend money or time, and where you live out your life in community and society. It can be Hanes Mall, a coffee shop, a restaurant, vineyard, bar, the Rotary Club, an art studio, church, a dog park, gym, or a Sheetz parking lot. Whatever your third place is, it provides an opportunity to share or experience God’s love “out there” in the world.

Jesus understood the importance of all of these “three places,” and went to all three. In the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark (vv. 14-45), it says about 9 times that Jesus “went” somewhere: to people’s homes, places of work, and, in general, just where people gathered—those “third” places. Sometimes he went to those third places to preach and heal; sometimes he went to rest and pray; and sometimes it appears he just went to hang out, letting people on the margins of society know that they were not on the margins of God’s love (Luke 7:31-35, Matthew 9:9-13).

At some times, the church has chosen to sit in judgment of those third places; at other times, the church has sought to be that third place. Theologian Reinhard Niebuhr described this tension in Christ and Culture, asking the question (essentially): is Jesus in, above, against, or transforming human culture? Niebuhr doesn’t

offer a definitive conclusion. But merely asking the question and looking at what Jesus did should give us “church people” some direction: get out there and “get in the mix.”

COVID-19, of course, has thrown the “three places” idea (and where the church fits in) into chaos for many, as your first place (home) became your second place (school and office) and there often has been no third place for you. And I have spoken with way too many people who are feeling isolated and depressed as a result of that.

But there are safe third places out there in these times, and I encourage you to find them. As a church, we have been able to provide some third places, either in reality or virtually, to continue to bring people together (safely) during this time. Jayne Radionov’s Genesis Kardia Ministry at G3-Sunrise Church has given people with special needs (autism, Down syndrome, etc.) a place to gather and share faith and prayers on a weekly basis by Zoom meeting; they even hold a monthly online dance party. Another third place has been the Sunrise Disc Golf course; I cannot count the number of people who have shared that the course has given them a safe outlet and an escape during the pandemic—to experience the peace of the forest, and some socially distanced conversation and community while staying active. Others have sought out volunteer opportunities through the local homeless shelters and food pantries. Even people who lost jobs during the pandemic went on to volunteer at the very soup kitchens that fed them, as a way to give back in gratefulness, and to stay busy and avoid isolation.

I pray you will seek ways and places to create community in spite of the pandemic—ways and places to get “in the mix” and experience or share God’s love, wherever your third place is.

his senior year of high school, Dr. Gary Chapman, native of China Grove, NC, felt a calling on his life to enter the ministry.

Little did he know the way God would use him not only at Calvary Baptist for the past 50 years, but across the world. In 1971, Dr. Chapman came to Calvary Baptist at the request of Dr. Mark Corts, senior pastor at Calvary Baptist, to lead the college ministry and direct the Adult Education program. As with everything you place in God’s hands, He multiplied Dr. Chapman’s gifts of connecting with others, counseling, and the love he has to help families and married couples, impacting and transforming lives in the process.

A Growing Ministry Dr. Chapman and his wife, Karolyn, joined the Calvary Baptist family with their own family of daughter, Shelley, and son, Derek, knowing he had a purpose to reach out to college students.

“The first ten years, I developed and led our college ministry.

Every Friday evening, Karolyn and I had an open house for college students in our home. The format of our time together was a Q&A. I discovered that students are filled with questions and will ask them if anyone seems interested in listening. Then I started our Single Adult ministry and directed it for ten years. With this group, I learned of the challenges and struggles of single adults. It was through both of these ministries that I developed a passion to help people process life in a healthy manner,” recalled Dr. Chapman. With Karolyn by his side, Dr. Chapman’s ministry grew and it took a bit of a turn into family and couples’ counseling, leading him to write the #1 New York Times Best Seller, The Five Love Languages, becoming a guide to knowing the ones you love and how to meet their needs.

Some Things Change and Some Things Remain the Same After years of counseling, Dr. Chapman realized that what made one person feel loved did not make another person feel loved, leading to the discovery of the five love languages.

“I found that where people were really hurting was in the area of marriage and family. So I started teaching classes on related topics, and those who needed individual help came for counseling.

I noticed a consistency in couples I counseled; one spouse would say, ‘I don’t feel like he loves me’ The other spouse would protest, ‘I don’t know what else to do! I’m doing everything I know to do.

Why would you not feel loved?’ I knew that people were sincere, but were missing each other emotionally. So I asked myself, when someone said, ‘I feel like my spouse doesn’t love me,’ what did they want? What were they complaining about? Their answers fell into five categories, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch, revealing a unique approach in how to effectively love another person.

The premise is simple: different people with different personalities express love in different ways. Each individual has at least one love language that they prefer above the others.

Lasting relationships, like anything worthwhile, take intentional commitment over time. But when you’re just not on the same page, keeping your love alive can be a challenge.

When couples discovered each other’s love language and spoke it regularly, they greatly improved the emotional climate of their relationship. When I wrote The Five Love Languages, I had no idea the book would sell 15 million copies and be translated and published in over 50 languages,” Dr. Chapman said. Through the years, Dr. Chapman has written over 50 books, including additional Five Love Languages, focusing on Singles, Men, Military, Children, and Teens.

In our current times, so much has changed, but then much remains the same.

“Basic emotional needs and relational skills have not changed. People need to feel loved, and build loving, caring, supportive relationships. I believe a relationship with God will dramatically impact the way we treat others. Jesus said, ‘I did not come to be served, but to serve…’ We are told to love others as He loves us. When we do this, we will find life’s greatest satisfaction.

This past year has been particularly difficult with the stress of the pandemic. I wrote a little book: 5 Simple Ways to Strengthen Your Marriage When You Are Stuck at Home Together, Addressing the Stresses of Today,’ commented Dr. Chapman.

Retirement and What Lies Ahead As Dr. Chapman celebrated his 50th year on staff at Calvary Baptist, he decided it was time to step down from his role as Associate Pastor and the responsibilities associated with that position, but he’s not riding off into the sunset.

“It really felt like it was time. Most pastors don’t stay 50 years at one church, and Karolyn and I have been blessed to have had this opportunity. She has her own ministry with pastors' wives, as well as the Women’s Ministry and choir. So my plans are to retire from the church staff at the end of July 2021, but I plan to stay active in the church and in my writing and speaking ministry. Calvary has a bright future with Pastor Will Toburen, and our present pastoral staff are committed to loving people and developing opportunities for people to learn to become devoted followers of Christ and to invest their lives into helping others,” Dr. Chapman stated.

With countless lives changed through his counseling, writings, teachings, and speaking, Dr. Chapman looks to the future as he has the past, faithful to his God, his calling to ministry, faithful to his family, and faithful to his church.

Dr. Chapman’s newest book is Life Lessons and Love Languages: What I’ve Learned on My Unexpected Journey and is available at Calvary Baptist’s church office and was released April 6th, 2021.

Three Kids, a New Baby, and Going Back to Work

I spent my entire pregnancy working from home during the pandemic. I remember it like it was yesterday. This was the first time that I was able to be home with my girls. I was kind of a stay-at-home mom, but I wasn’t. I worked full time, yet I was able to spend more time with my children than ever before. It was a breath of fresh air for us to have this abundance of time together. I made the meals, I helped with schoolwork, I was tech support, I solved math problems, I cleaned, I did laundry, all while working, all while pregnant. Maybe it was not the easiest, but it was rewarding. I bonded with my children and husband. We stayed home and we spent time together as a family.

I was excited, a little nervous and anxious to meet this sweet little boy. We knew that he would be our last child and he was also our first boy. He joined three older sisters who also adored him before they ever laid eyes on him. We could not stop talking about him.

Every evening, we discussed what he would look like, who he would act like, what his likes/ dislikes would be. The anticipation was almost unbearable. I just wanted to hold him, to kiss him, to love him. When he was born, I was an emotional mess. How could God bless our family with such a perfect gift? He was 8 pounds 5 ounces of pure joy. I remember leaving the hospital and crying on the way home.

I just had these intense feelings of gratitude and happiness that our family was complete. I did not want this feeling to go away.

The first couple of months with a newborn were great. My husband and I joked that we have twins, so we can take care of one baby with our hands tied behind our back. We were always the type of parents that said we

would not hold the baby while the baby slept, but we did anyway. We held the baby all the time. We just stared at him, sang to him, and kissed his delicate skin. We agreed that he would be spoiled because, why not?

He is the last baby and we wanted to enjoy this moment forever. Everything seemed perfect and we were getting into a good routine as a family of 6.

But everything wasn’t perfect, life is never perfect.

I was struggling with the thoughts of transitioning back to work after just having our last child. I love my job; I love what I do and I absolutely love the company that I work for and my team. I was just sad that I would have to leave my baby. I had more questions than answers. Where would my son go to daycare? Would he go to a regular daycare? Should we look for an in-home daycare? What would Covid protocols be like? Would my baby be safe? There were so many things to consider during the pandemic that we normally would not even worry about. When we finally found a daycare that seemed to be a good fit, I was not allowed to go inside. Imagine sending your newborn baby to a brand-new and very much unfamiliar place that you can’t tour. I had so many mixed emotions.

I knew that going back to work was necessary, but it just felt different this time. Maybe it was different because he is my last baby, or because of the pandemic. Either way, my thoughts

had me in a bit of a rut. I had so much to be grateful for, but I just felt overwhelmed with guilt that I had to send my son to daycare and that he would not be with me.

Returning to work during a pandemic has been one of the most challenging things that I have ever had to do. I did not realize the emotional, mental, and physical toll that this would have on me. I miss being available for my kids and home with my baby boy. Twelve weeks is not enough time. It is a very delicate balancing act to do so many things and to do them well. We really must be patient with ourselves. I have taken this journey one day at a time.

As I mentioned before, life is never perfect, and I knew that I must change my perspective. I am learning that my baby is okay in daycare; he is probably having fun and making friends.

He has wonderful teachers who love him and play with him. My job is a blessing. They do not expect me to be an emotionally detached robot. It is okay to express how you feel and work through those emotions. My girls are thriving and doing well with in- person learning at their school.

We are all navigating this pandemic and, in many ways, facing unexpected challenges. Our feelings are valid and should not be taken lightly. This experience has made me just a little stronger, slightly more resilient, and eager to be the best parent that I can be.

Remembering...

I sometimes wonder what my grandchildren will remember about me. That usually morphs into what I remember about my own grandparents.

A simple word or deed can trigger a memory that, depending on the situation, I share with my daughters and/or grandchildren. It also makes me aware of how little I really know about my grandparents’ lives when they were young.

None of my grandparents grew up in the towns that I visited every summer. They didn’t even live in the same state. To this day, I have no idea how my maternal grandparents met or how they came to settle in Texarkana, Texas. I heard stories about how my paternal grandparents met, but there are some gaps as to how their meeting in my grandmother’s hometown in Louisiana led them to marry when my grandfather left to live in a small town in west Texas.

Unfortunately, there is no one still living that can answer the many questions I have.

As a child, when visiting, I heard bits and pieces about their siblings or saw pictures that would bring on a story. Mostly, the tales were more interesting to my parents than to my sister and me. I really regret that, but I have wonderful stories of my own from my visits that I love to remember and share.

I am always amazed and proud of my grandparents and their successes. My maternal grandmother managed not only to go away to college, but she also received her master’s degree. While in college, she performed in several plays as the female lead, beating out another student who became a famous actress. My grandfather was an educator who began as an elementary school teacher. He obtained his master’s degree by packing up the family every summer to move to a college town where he took the necessary courses to achieve that goal. He then became a high school principal before becoming a school superintendent.

I know virtually nothing about my paternal grandfather’s upbringing. As a young adult, he started his career with a confectionery shop. As he married and started a family, his candy store grew into a soda shop and eventually became

a full-fledged restaurant. My grandmother always wanted to be an architect, but she was never able to reach that goal. She was a wonderful artist and did beautiful flower arrangements. Their restaurant was always filled with flowers from her garden. She even had a garden room added to their home.

Knowing the difficulties they had to endure in their lives – two world wars and a depression, among other issues, the fact that they still managed to be successful in their chosen fields is something I always hold dear. I just wish I had been mature enough to spend time asking them questions to know so much more about them.

While in college, our eldest daughter presented each set of grandparents with a notebook that she filled with a list of questions and several sheets of paper. She asked them, when they had time, to go through them and write down their answers. She, too, wanted insights into their lives.

Unfortunately, my father was ill and passed away before he had the opportunity. My mother was busy taking care of my father, lost their home to a hurricane, moved and suffered from dementia. Her paternal grandparents also had health concerns, but her grandfather sat with her one afternoon, and she recorded his answers to some of her questions.

So, what will my grandchildren remember about me? Their parents will have lots of stories to regale them with and, hopefully, some will stir memories in my grandchildren that they will pass to their children. I hope I will live many, many more years to see them grown and with families of their own. When their children ask them about me, I hope the first thing they tell them is, “I remember how very much my Gigi loved me.”

Kid-Approved Family Game Night

least once a week, my family and I gather for our battle royale. Our fight to the death. Or, as some people may call it: “game night.” Regardless of the ferocity of the players (in our family we have adopted the family motto: “There are no friends in Uno”), game night is a wonderful time for parents and kids to bond without having to “try too hard.” Being able to extend your bonding while also laughing, competing, and enjoying the overall merriment is priceless.

While many of us who are in the more competitive streak of “game-nighters” have a solid collection to choose from, I have taken the liberty to interview several kids and parents about their favorite games.

The Things We Do for Love (of Country)

My

heart was racing. I had heard all the horror stories about this and now it was my turn. Like a group of cattle we were forced through the doors of the small shed-like building. Inside, figures were wearing the same strange alien-like mask as myself and the others with me. The view through the mask’s eyepieces was terrible to begin with, and the darkness of the room, combined with whatever smoky substance filled the air, only added to the confusion. The muffled voices behind the masks began yelling. The doors behind us slammed shut. Through the smoke and darkness we could hear the order to remove our masks. We knew we had to do what we were told. To disobey would only bring worse punishment upon us. Gripping the sides of my mask, I pulled in an upward motion, breaking the seal that the tightened straps had created against my face. Immediately, the smoke entered the void the mask had just protected. The burning sensation on my skin was intense.

The muffled voices behind the masks then yelled out orders to say our names and Social Security numbers. The noxious-smelling smoke entered our noses, mouths and lungs as we tried to deliver the information we were ordered to give. The gagging, choking and coughing that ensued were uncontrollable.

My body was doing things that were completely involuntary. My eyes began watering. My nose ran like a faucet. Some of the others around me were vomiting.

The spasmodic sound of young men coughing and gagging filled the room. Finally, when we

thought we would die, the doors behind us were flung open. The bright day burst into the room as the group rushed back outside to fresh air. The scene became one of young men leaning against trees, lying on the ground, or staggering around aimlessly waiting for the effects to wear off. The pungent smell hung in the air and stuck to our uniforms. We could not escape it. It is a smell I’ve never experienced again in the last 30 years, but it remains one I will never forget.

The scene I just described was not a nightmare that I had, nor was it an experience with extraterrestrials. Rather, it was one of the toughest portions of the nearly four months I spent in Fort Benning, Georgia. Part of our training involved being subjected to tear gas. It was sort of like a police officer in training being tased. We had to experience the tear gas, which is relatively mild compared to the nerve agents or other chemicals that could be used against us if we ever found ourselves in a combat situation.

It is one of many experiences I will never forget during my six years of service to my country from 1990 to 1996.

Growing up, one of my favorite activities, especially when I was with my cousins in upstate New York, was playing army. I had known that my grandfather, who helped raise me until the age of six, had served in the army during World War II. I didn’t know much more about his service, but the idea that he had stepped up at a time his country needed him was noble to me. My grandparents’ basement was the perfect place to act out what we thought it would be like to be in the army.

We would spend hours building forts, giving orders and pretending to be in battle. It was all very innocent.

After my adoption in 1980, I began to learn about my adopted parents and their families.

My adopted father had been drafted during the Vietnam War. There, he served as a military police officer in the army. I’ve watched him through the past 40 years, and while he doesn’t agree with the

war he served in (for the record, all war is bad) he still maintains an extreme sense of pride in himself and the others who sacrificed their time, and in many cases, lives for their country.

He wears his Vietnam veteran hat and displays his veteran stickers on his pickup truck with great pride. He has started to share more and more of the things he saw while in Vietnam. It is something that I’ve heard is very common as veterans grow older. When he does open up, I sit and listen intently, soaking up every bit of it. He has earned every ounce of my honor and attention.

My adopted grandfather also served in World War II. He saw action and earned a Purple Heart in the Pacific theater. I will never know the absolute horrors of what he saw or did. I do know that in his final years on earth, he also started opening up and sharing some of his experiences, but I know most of it stayed with him when he went to his grave.

Knowing that my biological grandfather, adopted grandfather, and adopted father all served in the US army, I knew the path I wanted to take. The desire to serve my country was strong—not strong enough to make it a career, but it was something I wanted to accomplish, nonetheless.

In my senior year of high school, I joined the Army National Guard and was accepted to Virginia Military Institute. The next six years of my life we were going to be very different-looking from that of most 18-year-olds headed off to party at colleges with fraternities and sororities. I chose the path less traveled—a summer in the humid oven-like atmosphere of southern Georgia, learning the ins and outs of being an infantryman. In August of 1991, I matriculated at VMI, where I was subjected to the rigors of a military college and the grueling “Ratline.” The following summer, I returned to Fort Benning for my specialized training on the M60 mortar. While not nearly as rigorous as basic training or AIT (Advanced Individual Training), it had its own share of challenges.

Over the next five years I graduated from VMI and completed my six years of service to my country. My honorable discharge hangs upon my wall as does my VMI diploma. The challenges and obstacles I overcame in the army and at VMI, as well as the invaluable lessons I learned, have served me well in life. The hardships I’ve faced since my military experiences, while never easy, have been tolerable because of the irons I chose to put in the fire many years ago.

As I sit writing this, my grandfather’s neatly folded American flag, that once draped his casket, now looks down upon me. I cherish that flag and all the flags that have been draped over caskets or have been flown proudly at other times. I don’t look forward to the coming day when my adopted father’s flag will be handed to my mother or to me—the oldest of eight and the only child in my family to have served my country. And someday, my own flag will be handed to my sons. I hope that they appreciate the great sacrifices that so many before them have made to this nation. I hope they look upon my flag as proudly as I look upon my own grandfather’s. Above all, I hope they always carry a burning love inside their hearts for this great country.

St. Patrick’s Day Treats

The last thing mom wants to do is slave over a hot stove on Mother’s Day. Impress Mom with your planning and cooking skills by treating her to breakfast in bed (without her having to get up so early) with these make-ahead recipes the whole family will love! Making these favorite recipes in advance allows more quality time with mom (or for you to sleep in) and fewer dirty dishes in the sink on her big day!

HASH BROWN CHEESY HAM & EGG CUPS INGREDIENTS: 20 oz. bag Hash Browns 1 cup Ham, diced 8 large Eggs 1½ cups Cheddar Cheese, shredded 2 Tbsp. Milk or Half & Half ¼ tsp. Garlic Powder Salt & Pepper to taste OPTIONAL: F eel free to add other ingredients your family loves, such as diced green pepper, mushrooms, chopped spinach, diced green onions, chopped broccoli, etc.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease muffin tin.

2. In a medium bowl, stir all ingredients until blended, saving a little shredded cheese for the tops later.

3. Scoop mixture into muffin-tin cups (Be sure to scoop enough egg in so they won’t dry out.)

4. Sprinkle tops with the extra cheese.

5. Place on middle rack of the oven and bake 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 10 minutes. Run a butter knife around each one before removing.

BAKE-AHEAD FRENCH TOAST INGREDIENTS: 8 oz. French Bread (day old), Brioche, or Challah 4 large Eggs 2 Tbsp. Sugar 1 Tbsp. Brown Sugar 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract 1 tsp. Maple Extract ¼ tsp. Salt 2 cups Whole Milk ½ cup Heavy Whipping Cream

INGREDIENTS: ½ cup Old-Fashioned Oats ½m edium Gala or Honeycrisp Apple, chopped 1 Tbsp. Raisins or Dried Cranberries ¼ c up Pecans, toasted and chopped, optional ¼ tsp. Cinnamon pinch of Salt 1 cup Milk or Almond Milk

TOPPING: ¼ cup All-Purpose Flour 3 Tbsp. Brown Sugar 3 Tbsp. Butter, cubed 1 tsp. Cinnamon Raspberries or Blueberries, optional Powdered Sugar

DIRECTIONS: 1. I n a small jar or container, combine all ingredients.

2. Refrigerate overnight 3. Serve cold or warmed up slightly.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Grease a 13 x 9” baking dish, using butter.

2. Slice bread to 1” thick pieces.

3. In a medium bowl, lightly whisk the next 6 ingredients until well blended. Stir in milk and half & half. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, turning the bread once to coat both sides. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

4. Preheat oven to 375°.

5. For topping, in a small bowl, combine flour, cinnamon and sprinkle onto top of bread.

6. Bake, uncovered, until topping is golden brown, and a knife inserted in center comes out clean; about 40-45 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before cutting.

7. Top with berries and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve as-is or with maple syrup.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective Advice for the Class of 2021

always, at this time of year, I’d like to speak personally to the Class of 2021. I hope you will find my message helpful and encouraging.

I want to talk to you about balance. Not the kind of balance one experiences on a swinging bridge or in a high-wire act, but the kind of balance that comes within life itself. I know a lot of you may feel you’ve been robbed of much of your high school and college experience these last two years, because of the precautions necessary for Covid-19. And to that I say, you’re right. Is it fair to lose out on so many personal and monumental experiences in your life? The short answer is “No.” Now, I could go on further and say, “But look around you as well. Was it fair for so many small businesses to fail because of lost revenue from this terrible virus? How about the millions of people who lost their jobs and careers as a result? Was it right for so many to endure extreme stress and food anxiety for so long? And of course, worst of all, for those that lost their lives due to this deadly pandemic?” To all this, the answer is a simple, “No, it’s not fair.” But with all that ringing true, it doesn’t diminish the disappointment graduates today must feel about their circumstances. It’s human nature, and in this case, a valid response no one can argue with.

future. The decisions you’ve made in this time will affect the decisions you make years from now. The experiences you’ve been through will define not only who you are, but also how you see the world later. It affects your judgment, how you see people, relate to people, perhaps even pre-judge others as well.

It shapes how you will live your life in ways we cannot imagine completely at this moment. For instance, do you plan better financially? Will you be less materialistic in your desires, or more so, because you feel time is not guaranteed? Will you see loved ones in a different light? Will you repair broken relationships and mend old disagreements and grudges? Career decisions take on a new meaning. Some will see their careers as more impactful, while others may be more inclined to see work/life balance and enjoying what you do as more important than ever.

Balance, there’s the word I was looking for.

Allow me to impart some advice that we older folks have learned through experience. My wise old grandmother (and I mean this most endearingly) once told me not to worry so much about the troubles of today, because life just has a way of balancing out.

Both good times and bad pass eventually and we typically live for the most part somewhere in between these two states of being.

What you’ve missed out on is real, but what you’ve experienced is real also. Maybe you missed out on prom, or celebrations, sporting events, socializing with friends, the list goes on. What you also experienced, though, was history. Yeah, I know, you’ve heard it all before, yada, yada, yada. But humor me for a moment. I’m not just saying the repeated adage that through adversity comes strength, and you’ll come out of this stronger and more resilient to tackle the challenges of life. All that’s true in its own right.

How does this help you today? Well, for all that you have lost, look for those other seemingly transparent gifts that you have gained from this experience. Has it made you more creative; has it inspired your entrepreneurial spirit; do you see the world in a new way; are you more imaginative; and do you appreciate the little moments in life you may have taken for granted before? I cannot begin to list all the ways here, but think about it and ask yourself if you can find something of use out of all this. And then use it to your advantage.

Instead, I want to emphasize the importance of the fact that each of you has experienced something that hasn’t happened in over a hundred years! I’m not talking about seeing a solar eclipse here; something that happens in a matter of minutes within a single day. I’m talking about something that has gone on for longer than a year. An event so impactful that it changes not only human lives, but the course of human existence in the

Don’t let this experience break you; instead, let it make you. As my grandmother Daisy said, “In the end, your life will balance out.” Rewards and good times will come again. And just think about all the stories you can tell for decades about this time.

Where Your Cup Overruns with Kindness

December, we introduced readers to a new community coffee shop Be Kind Coffee Co. And five months later, they aren’t just brewing coffee and kindness is overflowing from the shop.

Mother-daughter team, Natalie and Amanda Gogolak, along with the rest of the family, have carved a niche for themselves and developed quite a reputation in the process. Be Kind Coffee Co. has built a business out of giving back to the community with monthly donations and charity support.

“Our coffee shop is based on Proverbs 31:26, explained Amanda. “It says, ‘She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.’ We took decades of hospitality and kindness that happened around our own family kitchen and brought it to the Be Kind Coffee Co. What happened next has been nothing short of amazing – proof that God has been writing every page of this story.”

Natalie nodded in agreement. “Amanda and I have been blessed beyond measure. We expected to bring kindness to the customers, but instead, they’ve embraced our mission and bring it to us every time they walk in the door!”

Within five months, the Gogolak family has partnered with local businesses and people in need. “We have a YearRound Giving Tree in the store,” said Natalie, “The tree tells customers of our focus. In December we worked with the Bethesda Center for the Homeless. Thanks to our customers’ generosity in our first month of business, we were able to gift them over $500 in cash and another $500 in toiletries and other sundries for the shelter.

“We’ve donated over 200 cupcakes to the hard-hit COVID departments at Novant,” Natalie continued, “Including 200 handwritten notes of encouragement to the Health Care Heroes who have worked so hard for the last year.”

“Our Pay It Forward Board has been such a great blessing too, and our customers have really enjoyed it,” said Natalie. “We have customers who come in and realize they have forgotten their wallet, or they are running short, but they can still get their coffee – thanks to the generosity of those who are willing to offer a random act of kindness to someone in need. We had hoped to inspire others but find that we are the ones who are inspired. This is an amazing community.”

Amanda said, “The business has exceeded our wildest expectations and reminded us of this truth – ‘If you can reach your dreams without God, then they’re just not big enough.’ This is His doing, not ours.”

“Sure, we are business owners, but our mission is kindness,” Natalie said. “Coffee is just the vehicle by which we serve kindness every day.”

Each year, Kaleideum hosts a spring fundraiser — the Kaleidoscope Ball — that supports critical operations and allows us to meet our mission of inspiring wonder, curiosity and lifelong learning in children and the community. Funds raised through this annual event help us increase access, provide camp scholarships, enhance educational programs and support hands-on learning experiences. In other words, ALL the things that make Kaleideum such a special place! Over the last year, Kaleideum has pivoted in how we serve our schools, families and community. Rather than hosting our traditional Kaleidoscope Ball, we’ve thought outside the box (or should we say, inside the box) and are excited to present Let’s Have a Ball! — a “party-in-a-box.” With it, we are bringing the BALL and the FUNdraiser directly to our community, so friends of Kaleideum can have a ball wherever they may be, all while supporting the museum. Each “partyin-a-box” features tasty treats — charcuterie, cheeses, crackers/breads, spreads and flourishes including fresh and/or dried fruit, olives, nuts, sweets, herbs, edible flowers and more — and surprises to keep the party going.
