4th of July! We continue to adjust to our smaller house and life on the farm, lol! My husband keeps joking we should make a family video to “Green Acres” (a very old TV show for you younger folks). It’s hardly a farm, but we have land behind and beside us that needs to be maintained which has made us feel very rural compared to our previous Clemmons neighborhood. Several old sheds used for farming long ago recently came down to make way for our oldest daughter and son-in-law’s future home. And, eventually, our youngest daughter, Morgan, plans to build as well. My brother and his wife will be on the land beside us, and we just cannot wait for it to all come together!

Busy, busy times and lots of news to share from the Bralley household. My daughter, Morgan, recently got engaged to her long-time beau. Morgan and Deep have dated since college, so he became family a long time ago; but it was exciting for us all to hear the news, and we look forward to making it official! Let the wedding plans begin!

Other big news to share is that December 2022 will be my last issue as Publisher and Owner of Forsyth Family. With my 59th birthday approaching, recent move and a host of other reasons, it’s time for me to hand the reins over to the capable hands of Brooke Eagle. It will be bittersweet as I have loved this magazine like a child, but I’m excited for what’s to come. I plan to still help out with a few things, so you’ll probably see me out and about delivering mags for some time to come!

A belated happy 30th birthday to my future son-in-law Deep Patel! He turned 30 in June, and I missed mentioning it in the June issue! And, wishing a very happy 30th birthday to my current son-in-law, Jonathan!

We’ll celebrate his 30th birthday while we are on vacation in Florida this month. Love both of you guys so much!

Family Game Night

sounds of crickets, a whippoorwill’s call and my grandparents’ stationary fan set on high remind me of those summer evenings we gathered at the kitchen table to play one of four games – Crazy 8s, Scrabble, Monopoly or Boggle.

Without realizing the educational value, my sister and I gained much more than memories. Beyond the enjoyment of being together, we learned the importance of rules, patience, taking turns, observation and using decisions to solve problems. While the times have changed, today’s computer-savvy youth will still gain the same significant benefits from holding cards and moving tokens around a board; so, this summer, begin a new family routine by inviting the grandparents, the aunts and the uncles to your game nights. While there are new games to learn and enjoy, the classics remain family favorites!

holding so many cards can be cumbersome for a young child. On the other hand, “Crazy 8s” is a great game to teach a preschooler the rules of shapes, colors and wild cards’ value. When the rules are understood, consider, for instance, requiring all “2” cards to result in the opponent picking up two cards and losing a turn. Adding one or two “wild rules” boosts the level of surprise and thrill in playing.

Classic Trouble

(Ages five and up) Hitting the “pop-o-matic” die is one of the appealing qualities of this classic game. Young children can practice counting, waiting their turn and accepting the roll of the dice to either go forward or be sent back to start again.

Excitement builds when all four players take a turn.

Spot It!

Qwirkle

“Spot it” can handle up to eight players; therefore, live up to the instructions by saying, “the more, the merrier!” Young players will not only develop picture recognition skills but learn how to make a match quickly! In “Spot It!” all ages of children will love the variety of themes to fit any player or occasion.

Everyone loves a game that all ages can enjoy. “Qwirkle” delivers. The game’s objective requires players to match colors and shapes through tactical maneuvers and well-played strategies.

Some may think it is a cross between dominoes or Scrabble. In this game, the player who has the most points wins.

Children can judge their scores based on previous games.

Ticket to Ride

(Ages eight to 12) Children fascinated by maps and geography will love the game “Ticket to Ride.” For two to five players, participants collect train cards to claim railway routes across the map. Through skill and strategy, individuals learn how to connect distant cities by building the most extended route. Additional versions are available in various countries, and an expansion pack offers older maps and a profound history, such as the United States in 1910 or 1912 Europe.

PicWits

(Ages 10 and up) A game of laughter and family fun, “PicWits” combines deductive reasoning with matching. Participants must look at their cards to see which pictures would best complement a caption. A judge determines who wins. One warning to this game: Some picture cards may appear “too bizarre” for young children; therefore, remove questionable cards before you start playing. “PicWits” is a game players can jump into at any time!

Game nights bring the family together, whether you decide to teach classic Yahtzee, Monopoly, Scrabble, chess or Clue, or learn a new game such as “Kids of Carcassonne,” “Professor Noggin’s Countries of the World Card Game” or “Power Grid.” No matter your child’s level of skill and ability, there is a game for everyone!

‘Tis the Season

BY MICHAEL JOHNSON Seasons are encapsulated miracles. They are predictable pockets of time and temperature and change that come and cycle as comforting markers of the year. Each season ushers in new celebrations and even challenges for everyone, especially parents.

Fall

Winter

Spring

Here we stand in the month of June. It is a time when we are coasting into the final weeks of school and into the shimmer of summer vacation. The sun burns brighter and later into the day. In the waning school days, I advise parents to use extreme caution. Not against the UV rays, but rather for kids who can trick you into thinking there are plenty of hours left in the day to get that homework done. It is easy to lose track of time as the days stay lighter later.

Invariably, you will hear from many that this is their favorite season. It is the gateway into cooler temperatures, the normalcy of school day schedules and the reignition of sports seasons. The hot chocolate emerges and everything pumpkin floods the marketplace. For families, it is a time to get back on the sidelines of the soccer or baseball fields and to bundle up and helpfully cheer things like ‘Hit that ball!” or “Go score that goal!” with the best of them.

It is the time of hunkering down inside. When outside, it means more clothing to keep up with.

It means that the school lostand-found bin is jammed tight with our children’s hoodies, scarves and gloves.

The whole of summer presents childcare issues with choosing just the right camp or daycare situation outside the bounds of preschools, as well as elementary and middle schools. As a parent now of a middle-school-aged summer camper, I have found myself asking my son, “Are you sure you like the idea of All-Sports Robotic Lego Bible Camp before I pay for this?”

I personally love fall as a soccer coach who adores the chance to dust off the whistle and dive headfirst into the chaos of the car trunk for the practice cones and balls. If I am out front of the house, and you see sports equipment and old energy bar wrappers flying while my feet are sticking out of the trunk, you know it is me getting ready for the start of the season.

The flowers and the raucous weather make for a varied re-emergence into the sunshine. Once again, it is time to start making noise in the garage and car trunks to rediscover the sports equipment. It is now time to breathe life back into the chilled bones and dust off the walking shoes. For this writer, it is also the time to wrestle with the foil packets of allergy medicine, as the North Carolina pollen is pure evil. Perhaps that is a dramatic statement; however, after my 126th sneeze for the day, I think otherwise. Lawn mowers whir, and yard work abounds. It is a glorious time to slide open the windows and let the light (and pollen) in. Who can resist the color and renewal of spring?

It is also time to start the genuine revitalization of those friendships that can facilitate pool visits. Being a member or a humble-and-everappreciative guest, like me, of a great pool is always a vital puzzle piece to any of the dog days. I remember growing up in California that my favorite neighbors were a lively and convivial Italian couple who let the Lambrusco flow freely with my parents and let us kids splash wildly in their crystalclear backyard oasis.

We all fret about bus schedules and bell schedules with intense well-meaning focus, knowing full well we will just simply downgrade in the winter to internally saying, “We’re doing the best we can. We can forgive the four tardies this week.’

It is the time of year where the local forecast can be monitored by me like an Air Force soldier watching a radar for signs of the enemy. We live in a region that is not altogether used to inclement winter weather.

Because of this, abundant caution is the rule of the day when it comes to schools.

During winter, parents can feel like their kids are out of school more than in school.

Thanksgiving, Christmas, a whole host of national holidays and snow days reign supreme on the school calendar leaving parents with full-time jobs outside of the home in a quandary. All this being said, it is “the season.” It is the season to wish everyone “Season’s Greetings,” and so it clearly can be argued that winter is the most lively and celebratory season. The icicles and lights twinkle with the magic of the season, and such is the backdrop to a million memories.

And, so remember the lyrics of the song “Turn, turn, turn” by the Byrds To everything turn, turn, turn There is a season turn, turn, turn Keep turning into the seasons and bend with them.

We are definitely blessed in Forsyth County to witness all four seasons of our year and revel in the infinite colors and experiences of each.

Here is hoping you embrace the “turn, turn, turn” of it all.

At Novant, Dr. Mason specializes in both adult and pediatric orthopedic surgery with a special interest in elbow, hip and knee injuries. Dr. Mason is one of only a few medical professionals in the Triad that specializes in pediatric orthopedics. Dr. Mason states, “We try to be readily available to handle all orthopedic issues quickly to get you back to the activities you enjoy.”

Meet Dr. Mark Schweppe. Dr. Schweppe has a real passion for working with an active patient population and specializes in orthopedic sports medicine, with an emphasis on treating injuries of the shoulder and knee.

Additionally, he performs shoulder reconstructive surgery for both arthritis and complex fractures. Dr. Schweppe graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his residency in Orthopedics at Wake Forest. He then completed fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.

you think of the Fourth of July, you think of parties, BBQs, cookouts, parades and fireworks. These events can be fun for kids of all ages. However, these festivities may also hold a little more meaning and celebration for older children and adults because they have a greater understanding of the history and significance behind July 4th. As for younger children, this meaning can still be gained in various ways, such as through books. By reading, flipping through pages and looking at illustrations, kids are able to experience the history while learning about the Fourth of July. From there, the celebrations will be just a little more special. There are many books for your kids to enjoy, including these:

• O, Say Can You See? by Sheila Keenan In this book, kids will learn about the famous landmarks, symbols and aspects of American life.

• America Is…by Louise Borden Another take on the above book with an exploration of the 50 states, familiar landmarks and symbols shown in a patriotic way.

• The Bald Eagle by Norman Pearl Children will learn about the bald eagle, our nation’s symbol of strength and freedom, through the eyes of a bird keeper.

• America the Beautiful by Katherine Lee Bates Set to the tune of “America the Beautiful,” the illustrations feature images of America.

• We the Kids: The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States by David Catrow While many of us learned the preamble to the United States Constitution from the classic Schoolhouse Rock episode, this read is a fun-filled look at the beginning of one of America’s most famous documents.

• Our American Flag by Mary Firestone Explore the history of the American flag through words and images of this historic symbol of freedom.

• How to Make Cherry Pie and See the U.S.A. by Majorie Priceman

A fun take on traveling throughout the United States. A baker needs supplies to create a cherry pie and, while gathering what they need, they travel throughout the 50 states.

• A is for Abigail by Lynne Cheney The founding fathers may get more recognition during our nation’s birthday, but let’s not forget the founding women that also helped shape our country. This book is a child’s encyclopedia of the great American women and their contributions.

• John, Paul, George, and Ben by Lane Smith George Washington, Ben Franklin, Paul Revere and John Hancock as kids? This children’s tale explores the childhoods of some of the founding fathers.

• Who Was…? by Judith Bloom Fradin and Dennis Brindell Fradin

The Who Was…? series is a perfect introduction for elementary and older children. This series features biographies of people who helped build America, such as Henry Ford, Michelle Obama and Jackie Robinson.

• Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers One of the more famous symbols, the Statue of Liberty, actually has a history that not many people know about.

As author Dave Eggers says “the symbol of America is a symbol of welcome” and you can learn about it in this timeless children’s book.

This is just a short list of the many great books to add to a child’s celebration of the Fourth of July. There are also wonderful novels and chapter book series for elementary-aged children, such as The Magic Treehouse series’ Revolutionary War on Wednesday. You never know — reading one of these books may just become a new tradition your family does to honor America’s birthday.

Resolving the “I’m Bored” Mantra

the perspective of youth, summer is a time of eliminating clocks and schedules, of slow pace days mingled with socialization; yet, despite the anticipated need to bask in the hammock of summer, there is also a desire to enjoy the thrill of outsidethe-box learning. Therefore, avoid hearing those two dreaded words, and combine learning with fun!

WEEKLY LIBRARY TRIPS Your local library can supply every age of the family with great books and offer wonderful activities that span from movie nights to a science-themed afternoon.

Even today, it is not too late to become active. Take time to introduce yourself to the librarian. They will be glad to see your faces enter through the doors and may glean your family’s interests to recommend a list of beloved and kid-approved titles.

NON-FICTION Reading goes beyond a fictitious story.

Children who do not know what to read can explore their interests such as astronomy, the Civil War or the Ancient Egyptians. Once learning additional facts, children may discover a love of historical or realistic fiction.

AUDIOBOOKS Delve into a grand adventure by listening to a narrator read a novel! Whether you buy or rent CDs, download a book or listen through a free app, most audiobooks can play on a computer or USB port. Therefore, consider listening while running errands, folding laundry or preparing meals! Children can take advantage of listening to stories up to two years above their reading level, bearing in mind that the book’s themes are age-appropriate. Listening, concentration and imagination are needed to accompany the array of characters through various problems and outcomes. If there is a particular book your child wants to read, listening to the audiobook may be a rewarding option!

A NEW LANGUAGE Let your fingers do the talking by learning sign language! Fingerspelling license plate letters can help instill a rapid feel for the alphabet while one is also practicing spelling. Young children to adults will thoroughly enjoy learning animal signs before moving on to other areas, such as adjectives and verbs. YouTube offers exciting learning opportunities, or consider using a book or flashcards!

SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS Online videos and books offer interesting and safe science experiments. Whether taking notes or following step-by-step instructions, children of all ages can improve their ability to follow instructions and expand their understanding of safe chemicals, chemical reactions, liquids, motion, air, magnets and homemade flying gadgets. In addition, children can write down or verbalize why particular experiments worked or how a tweak could improve the outcome.

CREATIONS REQUIRE AN INVENTOR’S BOX Ask your child, “What could you make with the following supplies: String, craft sticks, paperclips, a marble, a plastic bottle, a cardboard box and clothes pins?” If your child enjoys tinkering, take the “game” one step further by providing him or her with an old tackle box to create an “inventor’s box.”

MATH One of the surest ways to boost strategy and computation skills is by gathering the family and playing board games. Increase the excitement by suggesting Family Game Night! Children will boost their confidence

levels with unique games such as “Head Full of Numbers” (7+), “Sumoku” (8+) and “Prime Club” (10+).

KEYBOARDING Starting in third grade, today’s students complete roughly 90% of their assignments on a computer. While learning the art of penmanship and cursive is essential, keyboarding is another life skill. Online programs can offer touch-typing instruction to build upon speed and accuracy.

WRITING The task of writing may require thinking outside the box to boost confidence levels and practice the art of penmanship or typing skills.

Possible suggestions: •W rite or type interesting recipes.

•B egin a daily journal.

• L earn about the poetic style of E.E. Cummings or Edgar Allan Poe, for instance, and create semioriginal poems.

• Start writing an original story.

•T ake notes from a Podcast or television program to increase concentration and listening skills.

After engaging in a summer of educational opportunities, your child will notice a feeling of progress, perhaps coming to the conclusion that he or she feels more relaxed in a classroom or confident to work independently. A little effort combined with family encouragement can make a substantial difference!

If you are looking to create a unique and personalized wardrobe, thrifting is the way to go as you are able to find every type of style and size all in one place!

Thrift shopping is the best way to try out new looks or create your own style!

Another benefit of thrifting is that the items are given another life. With the items getting reused, the amount that hits the landfills is less! Not to mention, most thrift stores are tied to supporting a cause in your local community.

Before you even go to the thrift store, there are things you can do to prepare your closet for the shopping trip. I advise you to go through your closet before you go shopping. Separate your clothes into different piles. The piles can consist of categories such as “keep,” “maybe” and “give away.” Challenge yourself and think hard about this. If you can’t remember wearing it in the past six months, maybe it is time to say “goodbye.”

If you’re not excited about going through your closet before you go thrifting, make sure you do when you get home from the shopping trip! A wonderful tip is that you should always give away the number of items you get. For example, if you go thrifting and purchase four shirts, three pants and one pair of shoes from the thrift shop, challenge yourself to go home and give away four shirts, three pants and a pair of shoes! This practical and helpful tip will help you as you go thrifting to keep your closet clutter-free.

So now, you have gotten your closet clutter-free and you are ready to go to the thrift store. Cut, tie, try. These three words will be your best friend in the thrift store. With the thrift shops consisting of so many different kinds of items, it may be hard to find exactly what you are dreaming of. So, that is why we keep in mind “cut, tie, try.” Let me explain.

Maybe you see something that is super cute in the pattern or color, but may be the wrong size or style. Don’t let that stop you; get creative. Think about how you can cut this piece to fit you better. Maybe you shorten the torso length or the sleeves.

When it comes to “tie,” you can tie part of it. If it is too loose in an area, tie a knot on the side to shape it to you better. Lastly, I encourage you to “try.” Try something that is out of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to try one new thing every time you go shopping!

All in all, thrifting is good for your bank account, the environment, your wardrobe, your community and so much more! Why not try something that is new to you? Be creative and intentional with your closet.

Kids Growing Up?

Is It OK to Be Happy AND Sad About It?

“Cherish every moment. It all goes by so fast.”

I used to get so irritated when my children were young and wellintentioned people said these words to me…because it wasn’t going by fast, and every moment was not one I felt I could cherish. Some of the moments were awful and so difficult, and I could not imagine a time when I might long for them again.

And so, here I am. 18 years later, longingly, nostalgically looking at pictures of a time so long ago…of a mother looking so tired and stressed with her beautiful young children, and I’m just wishing I could go back there for a little while and spend some time again in those precious moments. It all goes by so fast.

I’m not sure I celebrated and savored all the firsts and lasts enough. I appreciate them all now in the remembering of them.

Sometimes it hits me that these times will never be again, and I get consumed with sadness, but most of the time I feel okay with where we all are and I face the future with hope.

Is it ok to feel happy AND sad about your kids growing up? Is it a universal condition?

The happy parts: I have raised my children to be independent and selfsufficient. They do not cling to me or feel guilty for living their lives. This makes me proud! This was the goal. They are happy most of the time and have plans for the future. I, too, have plans for the future…without them! I’m not one of those mothers who is devastated that the kid is leaving home. I’m looking forward to my privacy, my freedom and all the things that come with having adult children. I love looking back on our lives. I will always treasure those young motherhood years, and it is nice to be reminded of how far we have come and how much fun we really did have together.

The sad parts: Kids getting older makes us face our mortality and the not so fun parts of aging. I am not the young woman I used to be. I could never juggle the madness now that I managed with composure when the children were young. I need more time to rest now. Sometimes a feeling of longing creeps over me for the past. A time before that I will never see again. When children

grow up, they are grown and you’ll never know their young selves again. I miss the people they were throughout the years.

All the different incarnations of them. Watching your kids grow up and grow away from you can bring on not only feelings of sadness, but also anxiety and uncertainty, as well.

What do you do when you get sad or overwhelmed about kids growing up too fast or leaving the nest?

• Let yourself be sad, but only stay in that sad place for a reasonable amount of time.

No one should be expected to move forward without looking back to the past, but there is such a thing as too much focus on the “then” over the “now.” Give yourself ample time and space to grieve and feel all the feelings, and then begin your plans for getting on with it. Write down what you miss about the part of your life that is over, have a good cry, talk to someone who understands.

• Plan something for the coming months.

A trip, a mental health day, a new tradition, a craft you’ve been wanting to try, etc.

Focusing your energy into something you have to look forward to can help you from dwelling on the past.

• Be proud of yourself.

Raising kids who spread their wings and fly is an honor. Watching our kids change from sweet preschoolers to teenagers who answer us with one-word sentences is the greatest privilege a parent can know. They are living their one precious life, and we no longer have to check on them several times a night to make sure they’re still breathing. We got them to this place! And, what about the new moms we see holding babies and writing those first chapters of early motherhood? They are looking to us to keep lighting the way.

• Research studies have linked consumption of strawberries with many heart healthy benefits, including lowering harmful oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, reducing inflammation, decreasing oxidative stress, and improving vascular function and blood lipid profile.

Combine the following ingredients: Muddled strawberries, strawberry juice or simple syrup, pomegranate seeds, white tea (chilled), prosecco/champagne/ sparkling rose, and grenadine. Add a strawberry slice to garnish, and pour over ice to serve.

• Strawberries’ bright red coloring signals improved heart health since the anthocyanin pigments that give the berries their color are full of rich antioxidants. Observational studies have concluded fewer heart-related deaths among those who consumed strawberries. In a study among middleaged participants that contained risk factors for heart disease, there were improvements in HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure and blood platelet function.

• Ellagic acid, a polyphenol antioxidant, and ellagitannins may help prevent cancer and deter cancer cell growth.

• Vitamin C also plays a key role in beauty by amping up collagen that maintains skin’s firmness, elasticity and resilience.

Research studies found that ellagic acid in strawberries had a bearing on collagen damage and inflammatory response and may help prevent wrinkles caused by UVB sun rays.

STRAWBERRIES (COFFEE/CHOCOLATE/ COCONUT) ‘N CREAM COCKTAIL Combine the following ingredients: Muddled strawberries, espresso/Kahlua/ chocolate or carob nut milk/coconut rum/coconut milk, Bailey’s Irish Cream, whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings/chocolate syrup/coconut flakes.

Add strawberry slices to garnish and pour over ice to serve.

THYME FOR STRAWBERRY GIN (& JASMINE GREEN TEA) TONIC Combine the following ingredients: Strawberry juice and/or muddled strawberries, jasmine green tea, gin, tonic water, coffee grounds mixed with cocoa/carob powder and white sugar for rimming. Add a sprig of thyme/wedge of lime/sliced strawberry to garnish and pour over ice to serve.

STRAWBERRY LEMON-/LIME-ADE MINT MOJITO Combine strawberry slices and fresh peppermint or spearmint and crush together for bolder flavors. Pour in rum/ bourbon or lemonade/limeade (made with water, lemon juice/lime juice, and sweetened to taste). Add club soda/ seltzer, and garnish with lemon wedge, strawberry slice and/or sprig of mint.

STRAWBERRY MATCHA CREAMSICLES/ POPSICLES/ICE CUBES Puree in blender: Strawberries, matcha tea, yogurt/plant based milk (optional), honey/stevia to sweeten and pour into popsicle mold(s) and/or ice cube tray(s).

Store in the freezer and serve frozen.

STRAWBERRY RHUBARB CRUMBLE INGREDIENTS: 4 cups diced fresh rhubarb (4-5 stalks), 4 cups fresh strawberries (hulled and halved), 1½ teaspoons grated orange zest, 1½ teaspoons stevia or 1 tablespoon honey/maple syrup, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, ½ cup cranberry or pomegranate juice, 1 cup flour, 1½ sticks softened unsalted butter or 3½ tablespoons coconut oil, ½ cup granola, ¼ cup rolled oats, ½ cup chopped pecans/ walnuts/slivered almonds (optional), vanilla or strawberry ice cream for serving and fresh, sliced strawberry to garnish.

INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 1. Let cornstarch dissolve in fruit juice, stir in zest and sweetener, and spoon over fresh fruit in a baking dish. 2.

Mix together butter or coconut oil with granola, rolled oats and nuts. 3. Spread mixture over fruit. 4. Bake for about 45 minutes to one hour. 5. Serve with a scoop or two of ice cream and sliced strawberry garnish.

STRAWBERRY ORANGE MARMALADE INGREDIENTS: 2 cups chopped fresh (or frozen) strawberries, 1 cup chopped oranges, clementines/tangerines/ kumquats, 2 lemons, 2-3 teaspoons honey, 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger and 1 tablespoon whiskey/bourbon/rum.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Stir together fruit and other ingredients in saucepan. Bring to boil and stir steadily for about five minutes. 2. Reduce heat to simmer on low, and cook for about 10 minutes. 3. Remove from heat and let cool 10 minutes. 4. Pour into jars when cool, cover with lids and refrigerate. Keeps fresh in the fridge about a month.

A Few Tips for Surviving Inflation Inflation certainly takes some of the joy out of everyday living.

When you roll up to a gas pump and the price says $4.35 a gallon for regular, it can put a damper on weekend excursions – or it can totally devastate a budget if you have to fill up your tank more than once a week.

Inflation is higher than it’s been in 40 years – prompting sudden price increases that many people in the U.S. have never seen. In February, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index put the yearly inflation rate at 7.9%. Since 1990, it has bounced between 1.5% and 3% a year – sometimes a little lower and sometimes a little higher, but always within a range that most people could handle, reports data firm Statista.

But in the last 12 months, the price of everything has been rocketing higher: food, electricity, new and used cars, plane tickets, rent, real estate, electronics, mortgages, movie tickets, restaurants, memberships, lumber, shingles, clothes, medical care – and the list goes on.

According to the National Retail Federation, consumers are adjusting how they shop, and they are rebalancing their household budgets on everyday necessities: 47% are switching to cheaper alternatives; 45% are looking for coupons or sales more often; 41% are shopping at discount stores; 41% are switching to cheaper brands; 40% are cutting back in other areas to afford necessities.

Forbes magazine reports. There are many reasons for household food waste. Primarily, though, it’s a matter of examining what you’re buying, the dishes you’re making and trying to do them in portions that can be easily consumed between shopping trips.

Bottled water: If you drink four bottles of water a day you’ll spend over $1,000 a year. But 1,000 gallons of tap water costs between $3 and $4.

Utilities: In 2020, the average U.S. household spent $4,158 a year on utilities: electricity, gas, telephone and water, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Within each of these items there are opportunities for saving money: fix drafty doors and windows so you’re not heating or cooling the outdoors; consider increasing your attic insulation; see if you can find a cheaper phone plan; adjust your thermostat lower in the winter and higher in the summer – and consider putting in a programmable thermostat; replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs; take shorter showers; wash clothes in cold water; and fix leaky faucets.

And 58% of all consumers and 72% of low-income consumers (less than $25,000 a year) are dipping into their savings or taking on more debt to make ends meet. Here are some tips that can take some of the economic sting out of living:

Target unnecessary expenses: If you’re unable to increase the amount that you spend, then you have to look for items that you can eliminate or reduce. For instance, you may want to cut back on eating out, streaming services or gym memberships. If you use a landscaping company or someone to clean your home, you may want to do these things yourself. And if you work outside your home, pack a lunch instead of eating out.

Groceries: Switching from brand names to store brands could save you 20-25%, according to Consumer Reports. And frozen fruit and vegetables are just as healthy and can cost much less than their fresh counterparts. Also, consider planting vegetables. Anything that you grow, you don’t have to buy.

Food waste: The average American household wastes 30-40% of its food. The total annual cost is $240 billion or $1,866 per household,

Gas: Depending on your car, filling up can cost between $50 and $100. A little planning can extend the length of time between fill ups.

For instance, try shopping for groceries once a week instead of each day. Map out an efficient route so you can combine other errands into one trip. If you reduce your average speed by 5 or 10 miles per hour, you can improve your fuel economy by 14%, the Alternative Fuels Data Center reports. And, if you are waiting in a school pick-up line, turn off your engine. U.S. Department of Energy estimates indicate an idling car uses a quarter to a half a gallon of gas per hour.

Library: Every community has a library – and it’s paid for with your taxes. Visit your local library this weekend and see what money you can save by borrowing books, magazines, movies or music.

Marking Time – Still!

years ago, an organization was formed with the hashtag, “2Long2Wait!” It marked the decades that many have waited for disability services. The Registry of Unmet Needs (RUN) was created by the North Carolina legislature to log those seeking Home and Community Based services for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). The number of North Carolina citizens waiting exceeds 15,000 and is rapidly growing.

The stalled wait “is a can being kicked down the road, year after year,” says Deborah Woolard and Sarah Potter, parent advocates whose sons know the challenge better than most.

“Moms know this fight, and we are smart to draft behind them,” said Bill Donohue, Woolard’s husband and a shared founder of their North Carolina Waiver Action Team. “Real change in services for our children always seems to emerge at kitchen tables where the mothers’ networks are the real engines and passion for movement.”

Mandated by federal law, the HBCS services are designed to keep citizens from institutions, create viable work opportunities and protect them from community isolation. North Carolina is sadly behind the nation in all regards.

Forsyth County, however, is about to see some movement.

Partners, the new Managed Care Organization replacing Cardinal Innovations, recently announced new Medicaid Waivers allocations. Supported by local leadership from

Her son, Jeremy Donohue, was one of the lucky ones, signing up for the waiver before the turn of the century.

He’s been able to demonstrate the power of the waiver and HBCS services, enrolling in college, living and working in the community, and embracing recreation, worship and services largely unavailable to most with I/DD. A huge boost for someone with a measured IQ under 50.

Matt Potter, already has his college degree from Wake Forest University, but after a 13-year wait, yearns for the same opportunity – and dignity – of the service array. With cerebral palsy, he needs transportation, housing support and a host of other services provided by the waiver to fully express his potential, but is among the 750 in Forsyth County who wait for the legislature to match by 1/3 a federal allocation of 2/3. The average individual award is approximately $55,000; compared to institutional costs three and four times that amount.

“My parents and their natural supports will not always be here for me,” says Matt, “and the wait for all of us is so far behind most states who more than recognize the need.”

Sarah and Deborah have taken the lead to make a difference beyond the county borders with their website (ncwaiveractionteam.com). Following close behind are shared leadership teams from the North Carolina Council for Developmental Disability (NCCDD) and the Leadership Alliance for Neuro-Disability (LAND).

Partnering with other statewide agencies, their collective voices grow the reality that change is in the air.

Their work is gaining traction. From their kitchen table networks and website, communities are engaging and policymakers are seeing the data and stories that demonstrate family need and economic impact. Thanks to recent court decisions and these growing voices, light is again shining on the 1998 Olmsted Act requiring North Carolina to de-institutionalize its restrictive facilities for those with disabilities. The legislative history of cankicking is in full view as the burgeoning wait list “runs” the opposite direction.

The new “slots” are a boost for the county, but the “can” needs more than a kick if it is to keep up with the desperate need.

Preventing the Summer Slide Creating a Summer Reading Challenge for Your Child

Researchers

have found that children can lose up to two months of reading skills during the summer months if they don’t continue to read. It is also recommended that kids read a certain number of books over the summer depending on their age. Researchers with Scholastic state that about 19 books are recommended for children ages six to eight, nine for ages nine to eleven, six among ages 12 to 14 and two among ages 15 to 17. However, it is encouraged for kids to read above the suggested limit. The catch? Not many kids are avid readers. Oftentimes, they can find books boring and unappealing. As for other children, reading can be a favorite hobby, and they devour book after book. No matter what type of reader your child is, the most important thing is to keep them reading over the summer, and it also helps to make reading fun. One of the many things I have learned from teaching is that kids love challenges, so why not turn reading into a summer challenge and help your children maintain their reading skills?

First, get organized. Create a list of books they will read during the challenge. Discuss with your children what type of books they would like to read and how many they need to read. Younger children may need some assistance with the challenge and maintaining the reading plan. Once you have this list, write it down on paper or digitally. The list can be created before the challenge begins with all of the books planned to read written on it and then crossed off when read. Another way to use the list is to create it as the challenge goes on. After a book is read, it is added to the list. Some parents and guardians choose to use a poster board with columns that include all the weeks of summer.

Then, they add the book titles to the list once read. You can also include decorations, such as gold stars and stickers, to celebrate your child’s achievements as he or she continues reading. Don’t forget about a fun and creative name for the challenge that will also entice your child. Lastly, part of getting organized is thinking about how you are going to obtain the books. Will you be going to the library? Reading the ones you already have at home or purchasing specific titles?

Next, decide on a goal for the challenge. Will you determine the challenge is met when a

certain number of books have been read? Will you give points per book and have your child earn a certain number of books? For example, a picture book is five points, and a chapter book could be 10 points. This will all depend on what works best for your children and their ages. Part of developing an engaged reader is making sure he or she is challenged and not defeated.

The goal should be realistic and achievable for your child.

Once everything is agreed upon and organized for the challenge, let the reading begin. Refer to the challenge each day and set aside time for daily reading. Celebrate the milestones along the way, as well. Make it a big deal when your child finishes a book. Honoring all achievements will build motivation and commitment in him or her.

While rewarding the end goal is more important, it is valuable to give smaller incentives along the way, such as weekly, per book, etc. Take it a step further and create a treasure box of prizes for the milestones. Then, celebrate the ending and accomplishment of the challenge with a big prize. Don’t forget to take pictures. This can be a huge achievement for a child and should be honored as such.

Summer reading challenges are great ways to keep kids reading when they are out of school.

The key to making the challenge successful is input from the child. They need to be active members and planners of the challenge. Let them choose the books and prizes with your guidance. If they need help, be available for them. These challenges are fun ways to make summer memories while learning new things. Who knows – your family may now have a new summer tradition.

all love a great feel-good story – one that inspires and connects us to the people in our community. And at Piedmont Sheet Metal, that story began in 1947 when 17-yearold Bill Cook took a job at Piedmont Sheet Metal. Little did he know that he was building the foundation for a family legacy that, 75 years later, would continue to impact the community.

Piedmont Sheet Metal President Connie Miller, is Bill Cook’s daughter. She shared, “My father spent 17 years working for the original owner, Mr. Rothrock. He married my mom, built a house and started a family while earning an honest living, perfecting his understanding of the trade and earning the respect of his colleagues and peers. Indeed, he was so well-respected that when Mr. Rothrock was ready to retire in 1964, he offered the business to my father. We have continued as a family owned and operated business ever since.”

Mr. Cook passed away in 2021, but his hard work continues through the efforts of his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and employees – who are all treated like family. The example he set continues to make Piedmont Sheet Metal a trusted resource in the Triad.

Creative Ideas to Reuse Waste part 1

The

effortless task of transferring plantbased matter to the garbage feels routine. We are conditioned to believe kitchen scraps do not have a secondary purpose; yet, taking just a few minutes with fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers can result in growing a viable plant and, quite possibly, food. Yes, you can get more than your money’s worth!

Regenerating Vegetables from Scraps The list is lengthy. From root crops like carrots, beets, onions and potatoes to leafy greens, such as lettuce, cabbage, Bok Choi and herbs, all you need is a sturdy container, water and a few toothpicks.

SWEET POTATO: When a potato reaches past edibility, you can use two skewers, suspending the lower half in a shallow water container.

After a few days, roots will form; it’s advisable to cut them back, encouraging a healthy root system. Supported by a trellis, plant in direct sunlight, spacing roughly 15 feet apart. One plant provides approximately 10 sweet potatoes.

ALLIUM FAMILY PLANTS: Onions, leeks, garlic, shallots and scallions will quickly grow roots if the bulb’s base remains in a shallow water dish.

Witnesses will notice a green material growing from the bulb. Consider transplanting to a pot or garden, offering direct sunlight and frequent water until roots are established.

ROOT CROPS: Retain the tops of carrots and turnips, placing them in water. In a matter of days, you’ll notice new growth.

HERBS: Herb cuttings, roughly four inches long, will develop roots forming a new plant in days.

Make sure leaves remain above the water line.

Amazing Uses of Orange Peels Rather than toss out the peels, put them on a cookie sheet and back at 200 degrees for 30 minutes; then, grind them into a chunky powder.

Pour one teaspoon into a tea infuser or create a facial wash by making a paste combining honey, orange peel powder and drops of water. The result relieves dry, itchy skin, leaving the skin feeling fresh.

Watermelon Rinds are Edible!

An ideal solution for digestive health is watermelon rinds, containing a good source of fiber, amino acids and minerals, such as magnesium and potassium. In addition, combining watermelon with skins slows sugar absorption while managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels; therefore, consider using organic rinds to a stir-fry or smoothie recipe.

DIRECTIONS: Use a potato peeler to remove the outer layer; then, bake for 20 minutes at 200 degrees. Afterward, grind the chunks into a powder to drink hot or cold, or sprinkle into soups or stews.

WATERMELON RIND SMOOTHIE RECIPE: In a strong blender, add one cup watermelon flesh, one cup watermelon rind, one cup frozen strawberries, one tablespoon honey and one teaspoon lemon juice. If chunks appear among the liquid, use a strainer.

Pineapple Skins are a Superfood The enzyme bromelain is found in pineapple meat and the skin. Its properties aid digestion, works as an inflammatory throughout the body, fights joint pain and boosts the immune system, fertility and healthy red blood cells.

If you cannot use the skins right away, consider freezing.

A PINEAPPLE TEA RECIPE: After washing the skins, add two cinnamon sticks, cloves, one peeled knob of ginger and four quarts of water to a saucepan. Cover. Simmer on low heat for 25 minutes; then, turn off the heat and allow to steep for an additional 25 minutes. Strain. Serve hot or cold.

PINEAPPLE STOCK RECIPE: Increase the flavor and nutrients of your chicken or beef stocks by including two cups of chopped rinds. Afterward, strain.

month, this series will provide important facts and tips surrounding child safety in an effort to support parents and caregivers as they navigate reducing risks and creating the safest environment possible for the children in their lives.

If you’re getting ready to celebrate our nation’s independence this month, make sure to take a moment to prepare your family’s youngest members to stay safe this 4th of July! Festive additions like cookouts and fireworks are lots of fun, but all of that excitement can also pose safety threats for children and families, so we’ve rounded up some important tips to keep everyone as safe as possible this July 4th.

Fireworks and Sparklers Believe it or not, sparklers are actually most responsible for fireworks-related injuries in children. While they’re easy for little hands to hold, they are very dangerous when not supervised or given to age-appropriate kids. Lighting sparklers and other fireworks one at a time is the safest way to enjoy them; and have a bucket of water nearby to help extinguish when completed. Have all participants keep a safe distance from where fireworks are being lit and going off. If using sparklers, remind kids to stay at least an arms length apart from one another. Don’t forget ear protection for the littlest of ears

in your family! And kids of all ages need to be reminded it’s never funny or appropriate to shoot off a firework towards another person, as an injury could occur.

Cookouts, Grilling and Bonfires When you hear the words “Fourth of July,” the scent of roasting hamburgers and hotdogs may instantly come to mind. Cookouts are a great way to celebrate; just remember that grills get really hot and stay hot for a long period of time. Make sure everyone works together to keep kids away from the grilling area to avoid burns. If you’re planning a bonfire, make sure you are set up away from any overhanging tree branches, powerlines or near very dry areas. Place seating a safe distance away from the fire and encourage people to rearrange themselves out of the direction of smoke. Have any snacks or smores ingredients away from the fire, so kids aren’t too close as they try to get their treat ready.

Always have a fire extinguisher nearby for emergencies.

Sun Exposure and Summer Heat Summer holidays are best enjoyed outside! Before you head into the sun, take proper precautions to avoid risks of heat exhaustion, sunburns, thermal burns and more. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed skin, and wear protective gear like sunglasses, hats and breathable clothing. Fill a water bottle with clear drinking water or low sugar high electrolyte beverages, like Gatorade. While the kiddos are going to have their eyes on things like smores, remind them to take water breaks! Provide guidelines to your older children of what they need to do before stepping outside to celebrate with friends and prepare these same needs for you, your little ones or caregivers.

Alcohol and Substance Misuse While there is nothing wrong with celebrating your summer holiday with an adult beverage, be thoughtful about maintaining healthy limits and behaviors.

Of course, limit your intake to a healthy amount, and make sure you are at your event long enough to drive home safely or have other plans like public transport for your family. If you have older children or teenagers, keep in mind the importance of modeling responsible substance use and that your kids are watching your behavior. Make sure to keep any adult beverages out of reach of little hands and remind older kids which coolers and areas are for them.

Stranger Danger & Public Events If you’re planning to celebrate at a public event, remind your children about “stranger danger” and protocol in large crowds. Set clear expectations for staying close and what happens if they get separated for any reason. Choose a predetermined meeting spot for your family. Take a photo of each of your children before heading out for the festivities in case of an emergency, allowing you to quickly recall what they are wearing in your search to locate them. Consider dressing your kids in matching outfits, hats or colors to easily spot them in a crowd. Young families can now even purchase temporary tattoos that include your contact information that can be adhered to their hand or arm.

When Your Parenting Styles Are at Odds…

How to Find a Compromise?

Differing

opinions on parenting is normal!

It is possible for parents to have a strong, united relationship and still send a consistent message to their children. In fact, differing parenting styles can even be complementary. None of this can happen, however, without excellent communication and facing parenting challenges head on.

Without proper communication and a willingness to see things from another perspective, parenting conflicts can cause tension and anxiety, which can affect the entire family.

These conflicts can result in disconnected relationships, lack of trust and even behavioral changes in children. For these reasons, it’s critically important to learn to be collaborative and find the best solutions for your family.

Here are some ways to work together toward the best outcome:

Create Rules Together If you find it difficult to agree on specific rules, take time to talk it through. Make a list of the points of disagreement and look at which areas can be compromised on and which cannot. Working through the problem this way, not only models for your kids how to work together and resolve differences, it also helps to establish guidelines for how rules will be decided on in the future.

Once you have come to an agreement, it may be helpful to get the kids suggestions and buy-in on the rules up front, so when it comes time to enforce them, the kids will understand that they agreed to them from the get-go.

Collaboration is key in every situation, so set the tone for your household to be one of flexibility and openness to everyone’s point of view, opinions and feelings.

Agree on Consequences You and your partner will need to agree on what the consequences will be for breaking the rules that have been set up. Some parents are more lenient than others and prefer to talk things through rather than give an immediate punishment. This is another decision that will need to be made as a team, so expectations are clear when the rules are not followed.

As with any decision, this will require being open to differing viewpoints and calm discussion. If there is disagreement on what the consequences should be for breaking a rule, a compromise may be required. One parent may need to agree that there will be consequences for unacceptable behavior while the other parent may need to understand that consequences will not need to be harsh to be effective.

Back Each Other Up Once there is a plan in place, it is essential that you stick to it and stay consistent. If both parents are not dedicated to following the plan, the lack of a united front can have negative consequences and can derail the family dynamic.

Lack of structure creates insecurity, anxiety and discomfort for children. Do not allow yourselves to be divided and conquered!

Be Flexible Rules may need to change as kids grow and the family dynamic shifts. Flexibility is key to keeping things harmonious. There will need to be times when you work with your partner to re-assess how things are going and if changes need to be made where rules and consequences are concerned. Your children’s personalities need to be considered as well and can change over the years. Your style should be a good fit for the children’s needs.

Give Second Chances Every parent makes mistakes. You and your partner will both make the wrong decision from time to time. When this happens, talk it through, accept accountability if you were out of line or offer forgiveness if your partner screwed up. There is no instruction manual. Everyone deserves a heaping amount of grace…parents and kids alike. If you have acted in a way you regret toward your child, apologize and be honest about what you said or did wrong. This helps your child learn humility and how to accept accountability for his or her mistakes.

There is no need to let differences in parenting styles ruin your relationship. Remember that you set the tone for your household. Keep listening to each other, compromise when necessary and remember you’re on the same team!

LET GO OF NEGATIVITY that festers and replace it with positive affirmations. Learn to unconditionally love yourself and others, focusing on core needs for health, healing and well-being.

DEVELOP A PLAN to guide your self-care routines. The key?

Before you get moving in the morning, internally express your gratitude and feel the joy and excitement of starting a brand new day. Recall a few good memories accompanied by good feelings that you want to hold onto. Then, taking deep breaths, remind yourself that you will have more and more new good memories just waiting to be experienced.

Be Aware of New Scams

Ah, checking an incoming notification often leads to anticipation, wondering who among family and friends has left an insightful message.

The text says, “For having a great driving record, we’d like to send you a check for $1,597.59. Please click the link; you only have today to claim the money.” Of course, the message plays upon two human desires, greed and fear. While you would like to benefit from the unexpected cash flow, acting fast would provide a feeling of relief. Ask yourself, “Is it too good to be true?” Absolutely! Most messages call for urgency, promise substantial cash within a short timeframe and claim to have confidential or insider information. Take the time to notice the source of the text. Too often, con artists will use a peculiar name, not a business. The only action is to click the box marked “block.” Never fear; it won’t be the last time someone attempts to lure you. The goal is to identify the trap before you make a regrettable decision!

What is Phishing?

The “phishing” line has a recognizable company, whether from a bank, credit card company, website, social media site or online payment. The bait often includes a story to trick you into opening the attachment.

A few tricks may include statements, such as: • We’ve noticed some suspicious activity or log-in attempts.

• There’s a problem with your account or payment information.

• Please confirm your personal information.

• Please click on a link to make a payment.

• You are eligible for a refund.

The solution is to log in through an official website or call the company to find out the truth; then, protect your computer or phone by using security software to update automatically, creating the ultimate defense against threats.

More Phone Scams

It may be easy to trust a phone call, especially when individuals introduce themselves and the business they represent. Immediately, when a problem

arises, our first reaction is to listen closely and help. For example, we may learn of a compromised account quickly resolved by revealing the primary account holder’s Social Security number. Wait! Anyone who asks for your vital information, especially a Social Security number or password, and does not reveal the specific card or account is a scammer. If the person cannot answer your questions, hang up immediately and call the company yourself.

Five Circulating Scams

Through your online marketplace account, scammers will seek to validate whether you are a scammer. By requesting you return a verification code from Google Voice, the ploy allows them to establish a Google Voice account in your name while hiding their identity from law enforcement. Fortunately, you can reclaim the fraudulent account by contacting the “Google Voice Help Center.”

Other scams circulating today are: • QR CODES: Invented as a machine-readable optical label that contains data to a website or application, the QR code has gained popularity as a touchless option. Be wary of scammers prompting you to make a purchase, especially on look-alike websites.

• THE ZELLE APP: Con artists pretending to work for your bank or credit union’s fraud department use a peer-to-peer payment app to fix the problem.

Unfortunately, the scam transfers money from your “Zelle” account to theirs.

• ROMANCE SCAMS: Dating or social media sites continue to connect scammers to trusting victims.

Unfortunately, a believable story of needing money or a promise of a profitable return continues to be an effective trick. Fake accounts often have low numbers of followers or friends. Be mindful of the signs, such as stock photos or excuses of why they cannot meet in person.

• RENTAL ASSISTANCE: As more people relocate to North Carolina, a housing shortage opens the door for individuals impersonating government or nonprofit employees seeking money to cover application fees.

Unfortunately, today, trust requires research; consider using the site cfpb.gov to locate legitimate programs.

Basic security measures can help protect you from fraud. If you suspect a spam call, don’t respond or press a button; the safest option is to ignore the call or hang up. Another precaution is registering for free credit monitoring. Many banks already have a service for their customers; however, you can determine how other companies, such as credit card companies, handle fraud by calling today. Validating information may take time, but it’s a vital step in protecting your identity and savings.

SOUTHWESTERN COBB SALAD INGREDIENTS: Chopped or shredded romaine lettuce or other salad greens, chopped grilled or baked chicken, corn, black beans, pico de gallo, chopped or minced bell/sweet peppers, diced or minced jalapenos/habaneros or other spicy peppers for kick, avocado slices, hard boiled eggs sliced, shredded pepper jack cheese, bacon bits and add a few sprigs of cilantro to garnish.

CREAMY CHIPOTLE LIME DRESSING: Combine any of the following: avocado or EVOO (extra virgin olive oil), mayonnaise/ half and half/nut milk, red wine/apple cider vinegar, lime juice, honey/blue agave, finely chopped cilantro (optional) and spices such as chili, cumin, paprika/cayenne and white pepper.

ASIAN SLAW SALAD INGREDIENTS: Shredded or chopped red cabbage, green cabbage and savoy cabbage or mixed spring greens, matchstick carrots, chopped green onions, chopped sweet peppers, diced granny smith apples, mandarin oranges, crushed peanuts and chopped cilantro and/or basil. SCANDINAVIAN MIDSUMMER SALAD INGREDIENTS: Arugula, asparagus, beets, granny smith apple slices, crumbled blue cheese, pickled herring, smoked salmon or other fish, red onion, fresh dill and lemon wedges to squeeze on and garnish.

LEMON GINGER VINAIGRETTE: Grapeseed oil, lemon zest and juice, grated ginger and honey or stevia to sweeten.

GREEK GOODNESS SUMMER SALAD INGREDIENTS: Baby spinach, grape or cherry tomatoes, diced cucumbers, slivered red onions, crumbled feta cheese, Kalamata olives, pepperoncini and quinoa or couscous.

GREEK GODDESS VINAIGRETTE: EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) or avocado oil, red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, oregano, minced or powdered garlic, black or white pepper, and lemon zest and juice.

NEW ORLEANS SOUTHERN SUMMER SALAD INGREDIENTS: Dirty rice, red beans, chopped kale or romaine lettuce, chopped green onions, chopped celery, diced bell peppers. Add cooked and sliced andouille sausage, shrimp or shredded chicken.

FRUITALICIOUS FIX FRUIT SALAD INGREDIENTS: Melon slices, berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and/or raspberries), grapes, pineapple slices, banana slices and coconut flakes.

PESTO PASTA SALAD INGREDIENTS: Pasta of choice, pesto, grape or cherry tomatoes, sautéed eggplant, mozzarella balls or slices, displayed on a bed of baby spinach, drizzled with EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and balsamic vinegar. Add fresh basil to garnish.

BROCCOLI AND WILD RICE SALAD INGREDIENTS: Chopped broccoli, wild rice, dried cranberries, pecans or walnuts, red onions and/or green onions, and bacon bits (optional). Drizzle with your favorite vinaigrette or simply add oil and vinegar.

Control Your Digital World

“The

world is too much with us.” With these words, the early 19th century poet William Wordsworth lamented our disconnection with the natural world. Fast forward to 2022 and: • 43% of Americans report that they “constantly” check their phones… and yet, nearly a quarter of these folks find doing so “stressful.”

• 44% of the “constant checkers” also report feeling “disconnected” from family and friends, even when in their presence…and yet, 35% of this group are less inclined to get together in person because of the availability of social media.

In other words, we “know better,” but don’t “do better.” But, there is some good news here: 65% also agree that taking a break from all that constancy is good for us.

I agree, even as I drag my phone with me as I sit on my veranda to observe the comings and goings of my backyard bird menagerie.

Guilty as charged!

As with any change we want to make, intention is the starting point.

What needs to follow is a clear plan of action to help wean us from a behavior that we want to eliminate or reduce. When it comes to technology, that can be really hard. Maybe it’s the fear of missing a work email, or the fear of missing out (FOMO) that justifies and reinforces the constancy of our connectivity. Or it could be the awareness that others expect us to respond instantaneously. Or maybe it’s just become a habit as the urge to check can be very well entrenched. Identify what keeps you enslaved to your phone and own it. Then consider the following steps to strike a healthier balance between real time and digital time: • Be the boss of your phone – Remind yourself that you own this mere device; it doesn’t own you. You decide when and how you use it.

• Create physical space between you and your phone – Unless you are in the middle of your workday or awaiting a call from your doctor, don’t have your phone attached to your hip, wrist or within arm’s reach.

Remember when we all had house phones? We did just fine.

• Identify phone-free times and experiences – I do not check my phone when I am at lunch with a friend, taking a long morning walk or gardening – especially not gardening because nature is an incomparable companion. What opportunities for phone free time will you claim?

• Get a teddy bear – In other words, please do not sleep with your phone. It is false comfort at best! Place it in another room, or at least far away from your ZZZ zone.

• Seek out non-digital activities – I know a middle-aged man with a mental illness who has been addicted to virtual sports for many years. He recently started growing tomatoes.

To hear him express his delight in this activity is heart-warming, as it has opened up his world in unimaginable ways.

• Distinguish between friends and followers – As one person put it, “there is a big difference between real friends and ego-satisfying followers.” We do well to remind ourselves of this truth.

• Set expectations with family, friends and co-workers – Resist the pressure to be available at all times. Prove to yourself that you are the boss of your device by letting others know your boundaries. I love the fact that the people I work with around the country never expect an email on the weekend, even if they sent me a question at 8pm on a Friday night.

• Declutter your home screen – Minimize that comehither distraction with the same rigor you bring to decluttering your home.

• Unsubscribe from mailing lists – This is another digital “housekeeping” tip that puts you back in control of your time.

And when you do check Twitter or Facebook, set a time limit. When time is up, that’s your cue to get up, take a deep breath, look out the window and soak in the glorious world around you. That advice is as pertinent today as it was in Wordsworth’s day.

Which Are the Least Expensive and Which Will Break the Bank?

For

many parents with young kids, sports are a big part of the kids’ and the parents’ lives during their childhood. Over the past few years, sports have become very expensive when you consider the gear, the entry fees, the travel and other expenses. Everything can add up quickly! However, some sports are more expensive than others. Some youth sports can be surprisingly affordable while others can really break the bank!

Some families may find great opportunities at the YMCA where many different youth sports are available and open to anyone, regardless of skill level. The prices are reasonable and the experiences for the children and parents are top notch. The kids can stay active, and the memories they make will last a lifetime.

Once your child gets a little older, he or she may begin to take sports more seriously and become more competitive.

This is when the financial reality of playing certain sports can really become an issue.

Sports like hockey, lacrosse, tennis and baseball are not only some of the

most common and fastest growing sports, but they can also add up to cost more than the average family may be able to afford. For example, hockey equipment can cost around $600, a single, good quality tennis racket can cost up to $220, and lacrosse and baseball team fees can be up to $1,500, just for a two-month season if you play for a club team. This doesn’t even factor in travel, hotels, meals, etc.

In my own experience, my now 15-yearold son has played tennis for almost 10 years, and we have had to sacrifice in other areas, so he is able to play the sport he loves. From equipment and tournament fees to clinics, lessons and travel…tennis is a sport that can definitely break the bank if you really commit to it.

Hockey and lacrosse are two other popular and expensive sports. The protective gear and other necessary equipment for these sports can get very pricey, and seasonal fees can start at around $1,200 for a club team. There is also a good amount of travel, hotels, meals, etc. These sports can run into the thousands just for one season. They

are both sports that can break the bank if your child really wants to commit to them.

On the flip side, there are many sports that are tons of fun that are much easier on your wallet. Sports like basketball, track and field, wrestling and swimming are some of the less expensive ones.

Many of these are offered in school where the cost can be further subsidized. These sports do not require a lot of equipment, which cuts down on the cost even further!

It was refreshing to watch my 15-yearold son spend a season on the wrestling team. I was pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive it was as well as how much fun we all had! All he needed was a pair of shoes and was able to practice and compete for free. My food bills…now, that’s another story.

Keeping your kids active, while allowing them to have fun and make memories is something every parent strives to do.

There are many choices out there…some that require a pretty big investment and some that don’t. You decide what’s best for your family.

Kitchen Cupboard Health for Gastrointestinal Discomfort

Anything.” On some days, individuals who suffer from gastrointestinal discomfort consume more supplements than food, hoping to achieve at least one area of a biological, chemical or emotional balance; however, the stomach is a complicated organ and needs much more than a onetreatment-fits-all approach. Resolving discomfort requires an understanding of two categories: 1. What causes inflammation?

2. What causes balance and healing?

Discovering the solution begins with creating a healthy terrain.

What is the Terrain Theory?

In the late 1800s, Claud Bernard discovered a context between trillions of human cells interacting with equal numbers of bacteria, fungi and viruses within the body. As a result, the internal environment or “Terrain Theory” determines our state of health. For example, the human body has complete control over whether a virus mutates into a bacterium and then matures into a yeast or fungal infection. Thanks to the continued study led by Antoine Bechamp, we understand a weak terrain needs nutrition, detoxification and a proper pH or acid/alkaline balance to eliminate external threats.

The Root of the Problem Healing the gut can seem like an overwhelming undertaking. As stress compounds, food becomes an indulgent reaction. Most of our everyday staples can lead to gut inflammation. Examples include processed foods, dairy, corn, gluten, meat, soy, peanuts, coffee, alcohol and refined sugars. Elimination of allergens will give our body the chance to heal while learning about the right foods or ingredients to avoid.

The Vine and Branches

John 15:1-11 — “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

Our God is an intentional, consistent and creative God. We can learn so many things about Him from the way that He created even the vines and the branches. Just a few verses before this passage, we see Jesus describe Himself as the Way, the Truth and the Life in John 14:6.

He talks about Himself being these things as a response to a question. Thomas was wanting answers and directions, and Jesus responded by telling the questioning man about His identity. We so often seek answers, but Jesus shows us here that we just need to seek Him. When we think about what Jesus said in John 14:6 about being The Life, it ties into what He is saying here. In John 15:1-11, we see Jesus describing Himself as the vine and His people as the branch. In this comparison, we see the main point that Jesus is showing us is that apart from Him we can do nothing. He is The Life and He gives us life.

One of the most fascinating things I have ever learned about is the process of a vinedresser with a vine. The process, intentionality, knowledge and careful hand of the vinedresser is unmatched. The vinedresser has to know the vine, care for the vine, know what to prune and harvest, know what the vine is susceptible to and cultivate the vine. This is exactly how Jesus is describing our God. A vinedresser does not rush through and prune pieces for no reason.

A vinedresser also doesn’t leave it up to chance for the vine to survive on its own. We can see so much about our God’s heart for us in this passage.

One word that Jesus uses many times in this passage is “abide.” According to the Webster dictionary, “abide” means to bear patiently, to endure without yielding, to wait for, to accept without objection, to remain stable or fixed in, and to continue in. When we think about what Jesus asks of us, He asks us to remain, to continue, to wait for, to accept without objection. It is only when we abide in this way that we have true life, that His joy is in us, and that our joy is full. In your life and in your week, how can you begin to abide more and more with Jesus?

How can you begin to deepen your trust in the vinedresser? Where are you looking for life that is leaving you empty? Turn to Jesus, because He is The Life and He is the only source of Life.

in Winston-Salem with Crossnore Communities for Children – “Sips at the Silo”

Thursday May 12th, Crossnore Communities for Children held its first ever Sips at the Silo event at Miracle Grounds Farm. The goal of Sips at the Silo was to raise awareness for children who have experienced abuse or other trauma and offer assistance in ways that create and rebuild a safe and dependable living environment for these children.

ICON was the presenting sponsor for the evening event. There were numerous sponsors that made the event a successful evening. Guests were invited by influencers that were on the planning committee. As the 100 guests arrived, they were greeted by life-size cut-outs of the children throughout the farm, ensuring that their presence was felt and seen.

After several years of Covid changing plans and keeping events from happening, Crossnore welcomed familiar friends back to the campus as well as new friends to share their mission and the future hopes for Crossnore Communities for Children.

The guests enjoyed a cocktail party with sips and hors d’oeuvres as they were entertained by music from Christian Hildebrandt. Sips at the Silo was so successful that the hope is to continue this event in the future. Brett Loftis, Chief Executive Officer says, “We are grateful to everyone who attended Sips at the Silo to learn more about Crossnore. The support of the Winston-Salem community has been amazing throughout the years, and we look forward to hosting our friends and neighbors for years to come.”

These

oven-baked chicken taquitos are crunchy on the outside, cheesy-tender chicken goodness on the inside and very simple to make!

As we approach the peak of summer produce, the racks at our local farmers markets are bursting with fresh berries like blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. But, also keep an eye out for other seasonal produce such as okra, peaches, corn, cantaloupe, cucumbers, green beans, kiwi, swiss chard, lettuce, summer squash, zucchini, tomatoes and our favorite, watermelon!

And while these chicken taquitos are as simple as it comes to a quick and easy meal, there are a few ways to spice them up using the seasonal ingredients highlighted above. For instance, grilled corn on the cob is a delicious and quick side dish. Fresh corn is rich in Vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect your cells from damage and may help fight off diseases like cancer.

Grilled zucchini is another tasty side dish that may improve heart health and overall digestive health. Lastly, serving these taquitos with a homemade mango salsa adds phenomenal citrus flavors! Mangoes are rich in protective antioxidants as well as may help maintain healthy skin and hair.

INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 lb. chicken, cooked, shredded (see above for oven baked chicken recipe) 8 tortillas 2 T olive oil 1 tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. chili powder 1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/2 cup shredded Mexican cheese cilantro, for serving salsa, for serving lime wedges, for serving grilled corn, for serving guacamole and chips (optional) shredded lettuce (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. P reheat oven to 425F. Lightly grease a baking tray with olive oil or line with parchment paper.

2. H eat up the tortillas on a griddle until soft.

3. I n a large bowl, toss together the cooked and shredded chicken, 1 tablespoon olive oil, ground cumin, garlic powder, chili powder, salt and black pepper. Adjust seasonings to taste.

4. A dd a generous amount of the shredded chicken and shredded Mexican cheese into the center of each tortilla. Wrap up like a burrito and place seam-side down in the prepared baking pan. If possible, space the tortillas out so there is 1/2” between each (to make them crispy all around).

5. B rush with the remaining olive oil.

6. B ake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

7. S erve with guacamole and salsa on a bed of lettuce. Enjoy warm!

Presents the MacGyver Plan

What-if, the worrisome words, arrive in the conscious spinning topics from safety and financial security to loved ones and pet health. Asking, “What can I do?” leads to a proactive decision to invest time in the ultimate insurance policy – valuable life skills comprising security, shelter, food, water and medical care! In any emergency, from extreme weather to a personal disaster, you have the power to take charge of your fate by making plans and taking action!

You may recall a television program in the mid-1980s called “MacGyver,” played by Richard Dean Anderson. In resolving situations, he was a Sherlock Holmes in the modern-day, applying engineering skills, military training, physics and everyday items. Watchers often wondered, “Where did he come up with matches, a paperclip, an adequate length of rope or duct tape on the fly?” Television offers viewers a Deus-ex-machina resolve by allowing the hero to live another day by design. In real-world scenarios, MacGyver’s quick thinking and practical applications can save you, too!

Multiple ways to use everyday items: 1. PARACORD: Replace your shoelaces to ensure you are never without at least two lengthy lifesaving ropes. Having trouble losing a nut, wrap paracord around the wrench and give it a firm yank! Paracord can be used as a tourniquet, emergency knife and supply the strings on a bow drill or bola.

2. SARDINES: Much more than food to lure a predator, the tin can serve as a camp stove, shelter smoker or signal mirror.

3. GLASS JARS OR BOTTLES: Consider assembling an oil lamp using an absorbent cotton or linen cord, olive oil as a fuel.

4. VERSATILE VODKA: Fill a sandwich Ziploc bag with two cups of water and one cup of vodka to create a reusable ice pack. It can also be used as a first-aid topical to heal blisters, bug bites and cold sores; combined with lavender buds, apply as a liniment for muscle pain and stiffness.

5. DUCT TAPE: From catching insects to repairing cracks, making cords to reinforcing knots, duct tape has the tensile strength to hold, if using one loop, 700 pounds of weight. (For more ways, consider reading “What-If Presents” in the Forsyth Family January 2022 issue.)

6. SPACE BLANKET: As a reflective, light-weight, compact, Mylar blanket, it accomplishes more than just keeping a body warm; it also can be worn as a poncho, used as a rain catcher, tent, rope, water catcher, sling, bandage and signal! (December 2021 issue)

7. T INFOIL: In need of water? Line a hole in the ground with foil, and fill it with water. Use tongs to transfer rocks from a campfire. Within a short time, the water will boil. Without the availability of bait, try wrapping your lure to attract fish. Foil can sharpen knives, clean a grill, create a makeshift funnel and supply power to a flashlight if a battery is unavailable. Lastly, securing strips around your vegetables can increase plant vigor, retain soil moisture and help cool the soil. (Make sure aluminum foil does not contain food remnants; it will attract unwanted pests and predators.)

8. A BEER CAN: It’s the perfect aluminum can to boil water (next to the fire), create a candle lantern and char cloth. (Cut the top off the can, packing the interior with fibrous tree bark or cotton cloth. Next, fold the can to create a closure and, after minutes in the fire, will produce a usable char cloth.)

9. A RUBBER BAND: Combine a pair of stretchy rubber bands with duct tape to create a sling. Out of tape?

Then, cut a rubber band to affix a bandage in place.

Additionally, use it to secure bundles over your shoulder for easy carrying or securing gear to a backpack.

Despite living in a minimalist world, we are collectors by nature with grandparents who transferred the life skill of being resourceful and savvy. From aluminum foil and space blankets to glass jars and sardine tins, paracord and rubber bands to duct tape and medicinal Vodka, each is a multi-functional survival item to save the day in any situation, just like MacGyver!

MY TRUTH-FULL LIFE

This month brings us into the last half of the year and the edited edition of “My Grace-Full Life,” and this month—we’re talking about “My Truth-Full Life.” These days, “truth” is something that is treated as if it’s subjective. The idea of an “absolute truth” is highly frowned upon. People talk about personal truths or declare there are no truths. As one of my favorite apologists, Frank Turek, says, “When someone says there is no truth, you should counter with the question, ‘Is that true?’” You can’t answer that question! It’s an argument that cancels itself out. We live in a world that’s taken the black and white of truth and turned everything into grey. While I’ll concede some grey in the world, some things really are black and white.

This month – let’s explore some absolute truths: Truth # 1: Jesus loves you. That is 100% truth – not a shred of grey area there. He loves you so much that He considered you worth dying for.

Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Furthermore – Paul would expound in more detail, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).

Truth # 2: God wants a relationship with you.

He didn’t send Jesus to die for you for no reason.

He wants an active and engaging relationship with you! Jesus said in Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Moreover – in Jeremiah 29:13, God promised the Israelites, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” That promise holds true for us today, too.

Truth # 3: God is just. Too often, our churches cherry-pick all the Scriptures that only point to God’s love. And

absolutely – those are all true! But God is not onedimensional. We will never fully understand Him, but just as we are capable of emotions of both love and justice – so is He. It makes total sense since we are made in His image. So as we reflect on God’s love – we must also remember He is just. GotQuestions.org has an excellent article that deeply explains God’s justice. It is titled, “What does it mean that God is just?” The great truth about God’s justice and love – it means that those who have accepted His gift of salvation are redeemed as it says in Galatians 3:13, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”)…”

Truth # 4: The Bible is timeless. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” His Word doesn’t need to be re-written, and it’s not outdated. It is truly His love letter to humanity, and when it’s studied with the intent to know Him – it provides wisdom, guidance, and clarity for any and all situations.

Truth # 5: Jesus is the truth. He said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” There really isn’t any ambiguity there. It’s absolute, unwavering truth from Truth Himself.

Living your truth boils down to living His Truth and trusting in Christ for all things – knowing and believing that God’s will always prevail.

Sabbaticals allow them the opportunity to really disconnect from the ministry, to attend other churches where they can be fed instead of being the one responsible for giving out the Word, where they can gain new vision and prospective for their ministry, and where they can have uninterrupted family time. A sponge that constantly pours out will eventually dry up if it is not allowed the time needed to absorb fluid back into itself. Scripture shows us how the farmers were required to give their fields a “sabbatical,” so the ground had the needed time to renourish itself. What a sabbatical looks like can be different from church to church. Providing this time away for your pastor to replenish and recharge will not only reap benefits for your pastor and his family, but those benefits will also reap a harvest in your church and its congregation. The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

The Proust Effect

As

you’re lying on the beach this summer, or by the pool, or simply walking in the park with your earbuds in listening to your favorite music, here’s something else you can think about.

There’s a little-known, yet important passage from literature by Marcel Proust in his novel series “À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu” (In Search of Lost Time) in which the narrator takes a drink of tea with traces of crumbs from a madeleine cake. He then says, “No sooner had the warm liquid mixed with the crumbs touched my palate than a shudder ran through me and I stopped, intent upon the extraordinary thing that was happening to me. An exquisite pleasure had invaded my senses, something isolated, detached, with no suggestion of its origin.” The experience took him back to his childhood and elicited memories that were long forgotten. Contemporary marketing professionals, especially those in the scent industry, refer to this as the Proust Effect after the famous author.

In essence, it refers to provoking our “involuntary memory”.

Memory that is triggered by our senses such as a certain smell, taste, or sound. It’s so powerful that when you experience it, your mind travels back in time to the very moment a certain event took place in your life that involved that same smell, taste or sound. What’s so important is the vividness of the memory, it’s clear, and the emotions attached to it come back to you as if you’re experiencing it once again.

A memory inspired by our senses as opposed to being asked a question, or our mere attempt to recall on our own, is very different. It’s significantly more intense, and most often more pleasurable. The science behind it suggests that our sense of smell, for instance, travels directly to the olfactory bulb, which is directly connected to the amygdala and hippocampus, the memory-processing hub of our brain.

Thus, the memory response is instant. This validates its usage so predominantly in marketing, especially perfumes.

If you pause to consider it, you’ll likely recall your personal Proustian moment. I know I have several. For instance, whenever I hear Rod Stewart’s “Tonight’s the night” I’m

immediately transported back to the time when my older brother, his future wife and I were traveling to my very first rock concert out of town. It was Aerosmith and had nothing to do with the style of music but more to do with the message. I was so excited as a young teenager to be going, and the words seemed to fit naturally (my mind totally ignored the real message of the song at the time).

Another example is when I lay on the beach or by the pool and close my eyes, and I can hear sounds and conversations around me but not well enough to be inclined to listen, simply more like background noise. It takes me back to my childhood and my family’s annual vacations to the beach and how much fun we had.

The smell of bacon frying in a pan invokes my memories of the many camping trips my family took. I’m a big breakfast guy anyway, but there’s nothing like the smell of breakfast cooking in the morning at a campsite. Everyone has the same idea, so the aromas of bacon and sausage awaken you with your mouth salivating. Another breakfast memory of mine is inspired by the smell of Karo pancake syrup on buttered toast, a favorite my grandmother used to make for us.

British author, and television and film personality, Fearne Cotton said, “It takes one thought, one second, one moment or positive memory to act as a catalyst for the light to gradually seep in again.”

Recently though, I realized our visual senses can impart a similar effect, especially when it refers to home movies.

Watching a compilation video I made a few years back for my son brought back strong, sentimental emotions of times we’ve shared. As I watch these movies in retrospect it makes them all the more valuable, for time has a way of eroding much of life’s simple everyday moments.

Though Proust was a writer and not a scientist or medical doctor, he nailed our ability to tap into our involuntary memory, and thus re-experience those special moments in our lives, some of which we’d long forgotten, and others we simply enjoy revisiting from time to time. Admittedly, I don’t know very much about his literature, but his insight is truly amazing. And for that, I’m grateful for the opportunity to reflect and reminisce.

GERTI’S As LANE

I look back on 49 years of life, I can see many different roads in my past. Some of those roads were high-speed interstates where the years flew by in a blur of teaching, coaching, raising two boys, soccer games, Boy Scouts and all of the other typical activities involved with raising a family. Other roads echo with the sounds of marching feet and cadences from my years at VMI and in the army. The road I’m currently on takes me all over the country for more than 150 days a year. For the past five years, I’ve literally been “on the road” working for the PGA Tour. It’s unlike any job I’ve ever had and still brings me joy.

The excitement of constant travel hasn’t lost its luster…yet. But, the road that has meant more to me than any other in my life was the gravel road in Virginia that I lived on from first through 6th grades called, “Gerti’s Lane.”

When I moved to Gerti’s Lane after my adoption in March of 1980, I had never seen, much less been, on a gravel road. Most of my memories before then were on a paved street with my grandparents in upstate New York or in an apartment complex with my parents. Little did I know that upon my adoption, my life would change dramatically, and that gravel lane through the woods would impact me in so many ways I could never have imagined.

The gravel lane was not statemaintained. So, the school bus that took me to my elementary school would not come up it. Instead, the bus stop was close to a mile from my house (yes, I walked uphill both ways to the bus stop every day). In the winter, I bundled up, headed out the front door and hiked down to the bus stop.

Bookbag and lunchbox in hand, I met the neighboring boy who later became my best friend at the corner and together we made our way through the cold mountain air to the warm bus that would meet us. In the afternoon when

school was over, we were dropped off on the paved road and hurriedly made our way back home to beat the quickly setting sun. In the warmer months, our walks back up Gerti’s Lane became slower. There were more detours as well. Sometimes it was a contest to see who could hit the metal road sign with a rock first. Other times, it was stopping at a babbling creek and playing around it. As more families built houses in the area, the number of children walking up and down Gerti’s Lane grew.

As the years passed, I inevitably learned the things that went along with being around kids who lived in the area – cussing, dipping Skoal bandits and having discussions about love, life and some adult themes. But overall, I stayed fairly innocent in my younger years.

That final walk up Gerti’s Lane in early June ushered in a muchanticipated and loved time – summer break. Once I learned to ride a bike, my freedom became even greater. About two miles from my house was a small lake that was a sort of tourist spot.

Shenandoah Acres, which claimed the moniker (America’s Finest Inland Resort) had a variety of water slides, a sandy beach, a building with arcade games and snacks, and, in the middle of the lake, a three-story tower where, as a young boy, I learned how to start conquering my fears.

The first summer that I started riding my bike down Gerti’s Lane to Shenandoah Acres, my adopted mother signed me up for swimming lessons. I barely remember those lessons, but I do recall some high school-age lifeguard teaching me how to swim in a lake that you couldn’t even see the bottom of. Once I mastered swimming, it was time to face the tower.

To get to this tower, one had to swim out into water that was well over 20 feet deep. Upon reaching the tower, one would climb the metal ladder to get to the first level. There, you could jump off the side from a five or six foot drop. The second level was reached by climbing a set of stairs. Once there, you were at least 15 feet above the water (when you’re a 9 or 10-yearold skinny lad, 15 feet is a big deal). I know I was hesitant as I approached the edge of the platform. Looking down, I probably considered turning around and walking back down the stairs. But eventually, I summoned up enough courage to make that leap. It felt like I would never hit the water. But I did.

And then the rest of the day was spent making that jump over and over and over again. As my bravery grew and the summer went on, I found myself going up to the third level of the tower. There, 30 feet above the water, one would pull a rope that was attached to one of two side-by-side zip lines. The zip lines went out over the lake and took the person holding onto the handles for a 5 to 10 second ride where they would let go and fall into the lake at the end. This by far was the scariest thing I had ever done in my life. But, I knew that I was going to go down that zip line no matter what. The biggest problem that I had to tackle was how to actually reach the handles.

Remember, I was a scrawny kid less than four and a half feet

tall. The zip line was easily six feet in the air. Even with my arms up, I still couldn’t reach it. Knowing I could easily crank out 15 to 20 pull-ups at school for the Presidential Physical Fitness Test, I knew that hanging onto the handles wouldn’t be an issue.

It was getting to them. Fortunately, the lifeguard stationed at the top of the tower had dealt with my situation many times.

Holding the rope so the zip line wouldn’t move, the lifeguard allowed me to jump up and grab the two metal handlebars.

Hanging there on top of a 30-foot tower, all I needed was for the lifeguard to let go. As the zip line started down the cable I looked down at the water 30 feet below. I looked at the people splashing in other areas of the lake. I looked at sunbathers on the beach. Eight seconds later, I let go and fell into the water.

Again, I spent the rest of that day zip lining and having the time of my life.

There are so many other memories that I have of growing up on Gerti’s Lane – riding bikes with friends, fishing in the lake 100 yards from my house, climbing trees, building forts and eating wild blueberries and strawberries. I shall forever cherish those sweet and simple times of my life. The older I get, and the crazier this world becomes, the more I miss the days of my youth and the wonderful memories of that gravel road that helped shape me into who I am today.

A New Military Mom Reflects on Memorial Day

My

son, TJ, just completed his plebe year (first year) at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I know many other moms of 2021 high school graduates, and they were busy earlier this summer picking up their freshman from school. On the flip slide, my son’s summer will be spent with training and summer school. We may see him for a few weeks this month, but that leave is not approved yet.

When people initially asked why TJ chose a military academy over a traditional 4-year college experience, I wasn’t able to explain.

TJ has always enjoyed structure and respected authority. He is an intelligent young man who cares deeply about the state of our country and its position in global matters. He is well versed in events across the globe (much more than I am) and can discuss them with willing participants.

Now, I say that TJ wanted a path to a career that would matter in the world. What better way to complete two important milestones (earning a college degree and serving one’s country) than to attend one of our country’s military academies?

Initially it hurt to know he was ready to commit to a path that could potentially lead to war or death. We’ve worked so hard for 18 years to keep him OUT of harm’s way, why did he want to potentially jump into it? But he worked so hard to get in (that’s a story for another time that included a medical waiver) so when he finally got all of the pieces of the puzzle in place, we were so excited for him! TJ NEVER posts pictures of himself, but he asked to take a photo displaying his letter of acceptance with a Navy flag behind him. We knew this acceptance meant a lot to him.

We prepared for I-Day (Initiation Day) on June 30, 2021, only 17 DAYS after his high school graduation! TJ continued to physically prepare for “Plebe Summer,” an intense boot-camp environment that began July 1, coincidentally his 18th birthday, and lasted 8 weeks with minimal contact.

He was allowed to call home twice and write letters.

We received his first letter on July 11 after we (mom, dad, 2 younger brothers, one younger sister) enjoyed our first vacation without TJ. In other words, dad & I needed a distraction from leaving our first born at “college” by not returning home right after I-Day. TJ’s letter began “Dear Mom & Dad, I hope you are doing well. I am not.” The tears that flowed after reading that! Luckily, the first phone call was the NEXT day. He called and said he was ok. He wasn’t per se happy, but he was not in despair, and he wanted to stay.

I believe he wrote that first letter 2-3 days into his plebe summer. A week later it was still unbelievably challenging, but he had grown accustomed (as much as one can) to the early morning wakeups (5 am), constant orders (mostly yelled at them), and the variety of daily physical challenges that were now his world.

He successfully completed Plebe summer and his academic year began. The school year is a little more normal but leaving the yard (campus) is not.

Leave is not automatic, but thankfully TJ was able to come home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break and this past April, for his little brother’s First Holy Communion.

TJ is prepared to protect our country, and although he is in the initial phases of his military life, it still means a lot. It is hard to keep the pride out of my voice when speaking about him because I am very proud of him. I am proud of all young people who have decided to commit their lives to ensuring our nation thrives. There are amazing young men and women who have decided to enlist in the armed forces, participate in ROTC during college, or committed through attending a military academy.

Our nation needs these kinds of young people.

This Independence Day, like previous ones, I will celebrate the birth of our nation, those who have given their lives to ensure our freedoms, but now I especially give thanks to those who are willing to protect our nation so that we can continue to live as proud Americans.

Summer Memories – Remembering Old, Making New

Some

of my fondest memories took place during my childhood summers. The school year never ended before June 15th, unless that date was a Saturday or Sunday. The exception was my high school graduation which took place on June 9th, a week earlier than the rest of the students. Those last couple of weeks dragged, not only for us students, but for the teachers, as well. The hot, humid days with rarely a breeze blowing through the open windows, were hardly conducive to paying attention as hard as the teachers tried to keep us engaged. The last bell on the last day before the long break was met with shouts of joy as summer could begin in earnest.

My youthful summer memories take me back to many wonderful days. My mother tried to plan outings to keep from hearing my sister and I whine that we were bored.

Living in a suburb of Washington, DC, there were many places to visit and cultural events to attend. I loved when relatives or friends came to visit because that meant several days of sightseeing. Even though we had been to most of them, there was always a new exhibit at the Smithsonian museums. Mount Vernon, the Capitol, White House, Washington Monument, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, Folgers Theatre, the National Zoo, and so many other incredible places always made for wonderful days.

Summer also meant taking in a Washington Senators baseball game or two, sitting on the steps next to the Arlington Memorial bridge listening to the National symphony play at what was called the Watergate concerts, and sitting in the lawn of the Washington monument watching the incredible, in sight and sound, Fourth of July fireworks.

These outings were just a few of my summer memories.

The usual highlight was our family trip to Texas to visit my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The drive was arduous, but a few times, when my father was unable to get away from work, we took the train which was a treat in itself. Either way, vacation in Texas was always fun. My grandmothers always took us shopping to buy something

special. My maternal grandfather owned property outside of town with a pond he kept stocked with catfish and bass.

My grandfather took my sister, cousins, and I fishing. The poor man spent most of the day baiting our hooks, helping us pull in the fish, taking the ones we caught off our hooks and either keeping them for the fish fry that would follow, or throwing them back to let them grow some more. My paternal grandfather took us to his restaurant and let us order whatever we wanted – including several pieces of the best pies anywhere. He also played games with us – his favorite was dominoes.

I want my grandchildren to have happy memories of their Gigi and Pabo. Living very close to four of them, I want to make sure not to take that for granted. I want it to be more than just being with them. I want them and our Charlotte grandchildren to have the type of memories I have of my grandparents – places we go, things we do, experiences we share.

From ages now ranging from almost 4 to 14, each year they grow closer to the age of no longer wanting to spend time doing what their brothers or sisters enjoy. Baking cookies, playing games, going berry picking, visiting the aquarium, and family trips, will give way to more teenage endeavors.

The years seem to be flying by; before I know it, they will be off on their own. I just hope I will have given them wonderful memories to look back on.

JULY 23-24 SMILEY SPRINT TRIATHLON 7am-12pm, Clemmons West Recreation Association in Clemmons. The Smiley Triathlon Festival combines 19th edition of the nationally acclaimed KidsforKidsTriathlon.com with the SmileySprintTri.com for a great triathlon weekend. Last year, we had more than 150 volunteers, and including the Fun Runs, we had about 700 total athletes.

JULY 26 & 23 YOUNG NATURALISTS ALL-DAY CAMP (AGES 6-12) 10am4pm, Minglewood Farm and Nature Preserve, 238 Minglewood Road in Westfield. Our camp is budget-friendly and fun!
