I

continue to enjoy our everincreasing freedom from the past year’s pandemic restrictions. Spending time with folks we haven’t been able to, actually hugging someone, attending public events and, especially, no masks! My daughter and I actually did a small dance of joy when we saw the sign at HomeGoods announcing they had stopped requiring masks for vaccinated individuals. And, we got word today that California has lifted all its restrictions. Yay! This is especially exciting to me and my family because we are planning our summer vacation to hit the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles at the end of this month. We had planned to do this in 2020, but Covid had other plans for us. My husband has had this on his bucket list for a while, so I can hardly wait to experience this West Coast adventure! Cali, here we come!

My husband and I were recently fortunate enough to spend time with some dear friends in beautiful Beaufort, NC. They have a vacation home there and we were spoiled with several boat rides with some breathtaking experiences.

Multiple wild horse sightings at Carrot Island and Shackleford Banks. Follow that with the most incredible experience of so many dolphins swimming alongside the boat and playing in front of us that I lost count! Truly a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Butch and Julie for such a lovely getaway!

Our cover features Dion Williams of Piedmont Advantage Credit Union (PACU) – and I’m thrilled with the patriotic look for our July issue. Amazing folks doing wonderful things in and for the community! We have a fun issue for you with lots of helpful information to make your summer one to remember and absolutely thrilled to see the return of so many beloved events; baseball at the Dash Stadium (schedule on page 57) and tennis at the WS Open (page 99) just to name a few!

I’m especially excited to announce the return of Forsyth Family Magazine’s own Kids’ Morning Out event! KMO has been on hiatus since March 2020, and we’ve missed seeing all of you so much! Our first one will be at Hanes Park tennis courts and, in addition to all the fun to be had, we will have our fabulous prize board for some terrific prize giveaways. See page 55 for more details! So, grab a friend and bring the kids out for a morning of fun!

The Impact of the Piedmont Land Conservancy

There

is more to land conservancy than what meets the eye.

Those clear blue skies, the stars that enhance the nights, and green pastures of serenity that transport you back in time can all vanish for good, if not protected.

Imagine no longer being able to take a walk along your local park path, closing your eyes only to hear the song of birds’ chirpings and the trees’ leaves rustling with the wind. Not only does land conservancy preserve scenic lands, farms, and open spaces that have become the home to many native species, but it’s also protecting the quality of life for many generations to come.

The Piedmont Land Conservancy was initiated in 1989, when a small group of individuals met to discuss all the rapid developments happening in the nine northern Piedmont counties.

The counties include Alamance, Caswell, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin.

Their mission is to spread awareness by connecting people with nature, as well as taking the next steps to protect our beautiful natural areas, farmlands, and water quality for present and future generations. And now, going on their 32nd year, they will have completed over 200 land protection projects, which winds up to be nearly 28,000 acres in total!

But why is land conservancy in North Carolina so important? One of the finest qualities NC has to offer its residents is the luscious greens that’re filled with all sorts of life hidden beneath their leaves. It’s one of the defining measures that offers NC residents such a high “quality of life,” a place to connect with neighbors and share with visitors. It provides NC residents with clean air to breathe, reliable food sources filled with fresh seasonal flavors, clean drinking water, and safe environments to relax in.

It gives the everyday landowner the opportunity to leave a legacy. And for the hardworking farmers, it’s about preserving nutrient-dense soils to support their livelihood. For all the parents, it’s about creating new memories that remind the next generation about the simplicity of life, like skipping pond stones or trying to spot fireflies after dinner. And for a child, it’s one of the best forms of early education—a safe environment to explore, daydream, and to be creative in.

In efforts to increase awareness, you may find a variety of businesses across North Carolina showing their support for conservation on the first Saturday in June, aka Land Trust Day. On this particular Saturday each year, businesses

will donate a percentage of their sales to local land trusts. Some of our very own, like the Mast General Store in downtown Winston-Salem, have even participated.

According to Lisa Cooper, president of Mast General Store, the Piedmont Land Conservancy had “rediscovered local trails and open spaces” that “helped sustain our mental and physical health” during last year’s pandemic. Their hopes were that Land Trust Day would help their “customers understand and appreciate how these organizations impact our lives every single day.”

How can we support? Since Piedmont Land Conservancy is a non-profit membership organization, it relies heavily on individuals, like you and me, to support their day-to-day operations. And if you prefer to be hands-on instead of making a donation, there are also plenty of outdoor volunteer opportunities, such as maintaining a beautiful 6-acre wildflower garden near Historic Bethabara, which you can find on www. piedmontland.org. You can also contact them by phone at (336) 691-0088.

Look outside at the trees and watch the flowers wave to you in the breeze. But don’t let them pass you by, for time is in short supply!

High Five Kaleideum This July!

The Museum is Celebrating Five Years of Learning Reimagined

Kaleideum is an interactive museum of arts, sciences, and exploration formed by the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks in July 2016.

The two museums merged into a single organization to reimagine learning and better meet the needs of our diverse community by providing more access to informal science discovery and cultural experiences.

The museum’s mission is one of inclusivity and accessibility: inspiring wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery. They achieve this through the overlapping lenses of literacy, the arts, and STEM — a true trifecta of opportunities for our children.

Kaleideum offers a variety of activities such as field trips, group visits and summer camps that focus on science, art, technology, design and music, ensuring that children have a well-rounded, engaging summer.

“We are thrilled to have both locations open and filled with children and families this summer, particularly as we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the creation of Kaleida,” said Elizabeth Dampier, Executive Director.

“We love the sound of busy buildings where children can play, learn and grow.”

High Five Kaleideum! A Fifth Anniversary Celebration Celebrate the fifth anniversary of Kaleideum, created by the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks in July 2016. Kaleideum is having a party in the park Friday, July 23, from 6:30-9:30 pm at Kaleideum North. Live music is provided by 70s/’80s cover band “Long Weekend.”

Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and there will be food trucks, children’s activities, and more. Feel free to pack a picnic meal, but please do not bring outside alcohol. For each ticket purchased online in advance, the ticket holder will receive a goody bag filled with snacks, drinks, and activities provided by Canteen Cares. Adults: Members $10, non-members $15. Kid-Friendly Fourth of July Recipes

a kid, is there anything you look forward to more on the Fourth of July than fireworks and food?

While you may be leaving the fireworks to the professionals, you can be ready to rock your child’s socks with some simple and satisfying kid-friendly recipes! Not only will these sweet treats be a delight to eat up, but the kids can be your little kitchen assistants with each of these easy recipes being a perfect fit for little hands to help with, before the festivities begin!

FIREWORK FRUIT KABOBS

Here are four kid-friendly Fourth of July recipes that are sure to win the hearts of your littlest guests, so take notes on what you’ll need or snap a pic of the recipes below before heading to the grocery store!

GET TO WORK: Wash and dry all of your produce first and set aside. Start by cutting your watermelon into large circle slices about 1 to 1 ½” thick.

Lay each of these slices down flat on your cutting board and, using your cookie cutters, cut out watermelon stars. Next, you’ll slide 2-3 raspberries down your skewer, followed by your blueberries, leaving room to stick the end through a single watermelon star at the top! (Be sure to carefully supervise when loading the skewers as these can be sharp at the end.) Next, you can place your skewers along a festive tray with a small bowl in the center filled with Cool Whip for dipping!

PATRIOTIC PARTY MIX

(Perfect for little kids and big ones, too!)

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Po pcorn, 2 Bags (microwavable works just fine!)

Chex Cereal Mini-Pretzels M&Ms (Blue & Red) White Chocolate Chips Va nilla Almond Bark, 1 (20-ounce) package Sprinkles (Red, White & Blue) Large Mixing Bowl Silicone Spatula/Large Spoon Airtight container GET TO WORK: In a large bowl, combine your popped popcorn, Chex cereal and pretzels into a large mixing bowl. (All ingredients can be added in amounts according to your taste preference—let the kiddos go a little crazy with their favorites.) Using a microwavesafe bowl, melt the almond bark following the package’s instructions, making sure to stir until fully melted and smooth.

Next, pour the melted mixture over the ingredients in your mixing bowl, tossing with a large silicone spatula. Once cooled, pour in your M&Ms and sprinkles to get the sugary color combo desired and then store in an airtight container to enjoy!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Kabob Skewers, wooden or reusable metal Star Cookie Cutters Cutting Board Blueberries Raspberries Watermelon Cool Whip

AMERICAN FLAG PRETZEL STICKS

(Perfect for little kids and big ones, too) WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Pretzel Rods Chocolate Candy Melts (Red, White & Blue) Decorative Sprinkles (optional) Icing Decorating Bag Parchment Paper GET TO WORK: Start by melting your white and blue colored candy melts in separate bowls. Starting with your white melted candy, dip your pretzel rods into each about halfway down. Next, you’ll dip your pretzel rod into the blue bowl halfway up the white on the pretzel. You can then add sprinkles to the blue area, creating a little nod to the stars on the American flag!

After that, you will melt your white candy melts in a bowl, carefully pouring the melted candy into your decorating bag. (Quick tip: if you don’t have a decorating bag for icing, you can simply use a large Zip-Loc bag and

cut a small hole at the bottom!) You can then decorate the white portion of each pretzel rod with red swirls, imitating the stripes on the flag. Lay each down on your parchment paper to cool and harden. Then, serve flat on a platter or standing up in a Mason jar to add a little decoration to the table.

RED, WHITE & BLUE TYEDYE SMORES (Best for older kids and tweens) WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 8 × 8” Baking Pan Graham Crackers Milk Chocolate Bars Jumbo Marshmallows Red Food Coloring Blue Food Coloring Nonstick Cooking Spray GET TO WORK: Preheat your oven to 350° and spray your baking pan with your nonstick cooking spray. Using a microwave-safe bowl, melt marshmallows completely. Divide melted marshmallow into three bowls. Next, set aside one bowl, leaving the other two to dye; one red and one blue. Starting with your red mixture, carefully pour and evenly spread into pan, followed by the blue mixture and then the white. To achieve a tie-dye effect, spray your nonstick spray on a knife and run it through all three layers of marshmallow to mix them up. As your marshmallows cool, set up your s’mores on a cookie sheet with one side of the graham cracker squares on the bottom, stacking chocolate on top. Place into the oven, baking about 5 minutes until chocolate is melted. Cut marshmallows out into squares smaller than your graham crackers and complete your s’mores stacking. Serve immediately and prepare to wipe down sticky fingers!

Cooking with children can be extra messy and definitely requires a little added patience at times, but the memories are precious. Ask your kids which recipe they want to tackle this Fourth of July and make it extra special by making it together and having a festive treat to share as you watch the fireworks.

Calvary Day School’s Valedictorian for the Class of 2021 is Jarrett Paul Mozingo. Jarrett is the son of Hank and Leslie Mozingo of Clemmons. He has an older sister, Shelby, who graduated from CDS in 2019, and an International-student brother, James Guo, who has lived with the Mozingo family for the past 3 years.

The Salutatorian for Calvary Day School’s Class of 2021 is John Nathan Bozeman. He is the son of Dr. William Bozeman and Dr. Elizabeth Bozeman.

Nate has an older brother, Josh, who graduated from CDS in 2019. Nate has attended Calvary since the 7th grade.

Jarrett came to Calvary in the 5th grade. He is a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Science National Honor Society, and the National Speech and Debate Association. During his high school years at CDS, Jarrett has participated in Youth and Government, the Ethics Club, and served on Student Council all 4 years. This year he is a member of the Executive Leadership Council.

Other recognitions include Junior Marshal, Statesmanship Award, AP Scholar and recipient of the Service Honor Cord.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Jarrett was also an integral member of the Varsity Boys Soccer team and considers winning the State Championship this year as one of his favorite memories. When asked what he is most thankful for during his time at CDS, he said “all of the teachers who cared about my growth, both in and out of the classroom”.

Jarrett attends Calvary Baptist Church and his life Bible verse is John 7:24, “Look beneath the surface so you can discern what is right.”

Nate is a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Science National Honor Society. He received the Breaking Trail Leadership Award, earned the title of Chief Junior Marshal, and was recognized this year as an AP Scholar and recipient of the Service Honor Cord.

Outside of the classroom, soccer has played a significant role in Nate’s life. He is a member of the Varsity Boys Soccer team and counts winning the State Championship this year as one of his favorite memories. He has played Fusion Club Soccer for 6 years, and he referees youth soccer with the NC Soccer Referees Association. Other interests include strength training, Tae Kwon Do, and water skiing.

When asked what he is most thankful for about CDS, Nate said the close relationships formed with teachers “make them feel like family and make Calvary feel like home”. Nate attends Calvary West and volunteers in the children’s ministry. His life Bible verse is Luke 9:23, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

In the fall, Jarrett will attend The University of Alabama where he plans to major in Business with a minor in Chinese.

Nate plans to attend Wake Forest University in the fall and will study Biomedical Engineering.

THE HIDDEN DIY HEROES OF SUMMER

When

you hear the words “pool noodle,” you may be met with an immediate vision of familiar colorful styrofoam contraptions waving in the water. These giant tubes are often privileged by experiencing a child’s ability to turn them into everything from medieval swords to giant imaginary sea horses! But what about adult imaginations? Surely, there are a plethora of exciting pool noodle possibilities just waiting to be discovered!

What you may not realize is that these commonly used, affordable pool toys are actually something of a DIY Superstar! Since they can be difficult to find in stores outside of the summer months, this is a perfect time to find a pool noodle project of your own to tackle! From everyday hacks that improve little areas of your life to creative craft projects, here are 15 out-of-the-box ideas to employ using pool noodles.

Computer Wrist Rest - slice a pool noodle in half and cut to the length of your keyboard for a comfortable ergonomic wrist option.

Boot Shapers - Cut a pool noodle to match the height of your favorite boots and stuff them inside, when not being worn, to help keep your boot shape throughout the seasons.

Colorful Summer Garland - add a pop of color to your decorations by slicing 1” wide circles of alternating color pool noodles, stringing them together in a pattern and hanging.

Wreath Form - Curve your pool noodle into a perfect circle, taping or hot gluing the ends together. Once cooled, you can wrap in a favorite fabric print or burlap and decorate.

Beverage Boat - Fill a small plastic container with a few beverages for the pool with pool noodles cut to size, and string together around each corner to stay afloat and in reach.

Door Bumper - Use an Exacto knife to cut a slit lengthwise in a 3” piece of pool noodle and place it on the edge of your door to avoid loud door slams.

Wine Glass Markets - Identify whose drink is whose by cutting out different pool noodle shapes and colors 1” wide with a slit in the side to easily slip on and off glasses.

Boundary Markers - Place bright pool noodles at appropriate heights to mark cutoffs in driveways, garages, farmland, and anywhere else vehicles need to know limitations.

Ladder Padding - Cut pool noodles horizontally to the width of your ladder step, with a lengthwise slit to pop on the metal steps where your legs will be leaning while working.

Paint Stamps - Slice pool noodles in 1” circles, then dip in paint to create a fun stamp to make different designs and shapes with a fun texture.

Cord Organizer - Place a lengthwise slit in your pool noodle and hide any unwanted cords inside, placing the noodle out of sight behind your furniture

Crease-Free Hanger - Add 12”-14” of pool noodle with a lengthwise slit onto your hangers to avoid creasing bottoms when hanging up.

After all, mortality has a 100% track record, and as many families can attest, a pre-planned funeral may be one of the most thoughtful and generous gifts you can leave behind.

Rick Parham, the Pre-Planning Manager, shared his experience and insights on the benefits of pre-planning funeral arrangements.

“Everyone knows that funerals are highly emotional occasions,” Rick said.

“Moreover,” Rick continued, “Those who pre-plan their funerals can provide biographical details that families may not know or remember during such a stressful time. That makes it easier for us when we’re providing a death certificate or even writing an obituary.”

Hayworth-Miller also offers an inflationproof contract that guarantees today’s prices for services and merchandise.

Rick shared, “As costs continue to rise,

securing the cost of a casket, vault, and other details is a long-term cost savings. Our team can also help make recommendations for cemeteries and grave markers.”

Rick continued, “We itemize everything based on the individual’s decisions and then work together to determine a payment plan. We can coordinate a single payment or even pay through monthly installments with an insurance company. People do not have to wait for a terminal diagnosis to begin pre-planning their funeral service. “No one knows what is going to happen long-term,” Rick said. “We have seen it time and again in our industry—an unexpected loss

that equates to a tremendous financial burden. If there is no insurance or money at the time of death, it adds so much complexity to an already difficult situation. But for those families who have loved ones who pre-planned, the difficult situation is simplified. Spouses are free to grieve without trying to find money to pay for the service. Siblings don’t have to second-guess themselves because Mom and Dad have already made the hard choices.”

While pre-planning funerals is not new, it’s not a conversation many people like to have, so there are some frequently asked questions that come up during pre-planning discussions. For example, what happens if the funeral home goes out of business before the time of death? Rick explained, “In our case, we have longevity, so it’s not likely that Hayworth-Miller is going anywhere.

However, the money isn’t held by the funeral home. The money is held by an insurance company and the contract is filed with the NC Board of Funeral Services. So the consumer is highly protected when they prepay.”

Another common question is whether changes can be made. Again, Rick explains, “Absolutely! While the benefit of pre-planning is to ensure that the wishes of a loved one have been accounted for, we also allow the family to make changes or pay the difference for additional services. If the service ends up being less than what was originally planned for, we issue a refund to the estate.”

For those who are uncomfortable with the idea of pre-planning or even having a discussion about end-of-life matters, consider this: In every other

aspect of life, people pre-plan. Rick said, “People plan for weddings, homes, retirement, and their estate.

Planning these milestone moments helps everyone be on the same page and also covers costs. A funeral is no different, and a pre-planned service is an act of kindness to the loved ones who are left behind. And the conversation doesn’t have to be long and drawn out. July, a Month of Ice Cream The

combination of milk, cream, and sugar consistently tops the list of our favorite foods. Everyone has a particular favorite. Yours may be strawberry or vanilla, or two scoops, comprising chocolate and peanut butter cup. There’s a distinct reason ice cream and summer go hand-in-hand. It’s the most-consumed dessert in America, considered comfort food, and preferred because it’s simply delicious! Did you know vanilla continues to be the most-preferred flavor? And, chocolate syrup is the mostchosen topping?

Ice Cream has a long history.

Did you know?

• The first documented recipe was by an English woman in 1665, who flavored her “icy cream” with orange blossom water made with nutmeg.

• In 1784, George Washington purchased a cream machine for ice for one pound, thirteen shillings, and three pence. He also invested in utensils to prepare and serve it.

• Nancy Marie Donaldson Johnson patented in 1843 the first handcranked ice cream freezer similar to those still sold today, including a tub, cylinder, lid, dasher, and crank.

•“ Beatlemania” was on its way to the United States.

Irv Robbins, a co-owner of a well-known ice cream shop, had seconds to respond. A Washington Post reporter wondered what flavor BaskinRobbins was going to choose to honor the arrival of the international, renowned rock group. The answer: “Beatle Nut.” In five days, it was created, manufactured, and delivered.

• I n 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation declaring July to be National Ice Cream Month. The third Sunday of the month is officially National Ice Cream Day! • I n 2017, a new world record for eating ice cream identified a new victor. Miki Sudo consumed 16.5 pints in six minutes!

•A staggering nine percent of all cows’ milk creates ice cream.

•T oday’s ice cream can be served hand-rolled, charcoal-infused, or blasted with nitrogen!

•A ir, comprising 50% of the volume in ice cream, increases its light texture.

• In 1851, a Baltimore, Maryland, dairyman had a surplus of cream and decided to open the first commercial ice cream factory in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania. Shipping his product by train back to Baltimore, Jacob Fussell also started the wholesale ice cream industry.

•H ealth continues to be a priority among dessert lovers. Sugar-reduced ice cream products grew by 16% in 2020.

• In the late 19th century, Naples, Italy, created the first three-flavored ice cream by putting pistachio (green), cherry, (red), and vanilla (white) together to represent the Italian flag.

In America, the term “Neapolitan” refers to a block of ice cream composed of three different flavors, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

Before you delve into making a homemade batch of ice cream, consider one of two styles.

• At the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, Ernest E. Hamwi used his waffle iron to make cones, helping an ice cream vendor who had run out of bowls.

• In 1918, an American editorial writer criticized European hospitals for not feeding injured soldiers ice cream. He claimed every medical hospital in America used ice cream as a morale booster.

• The first ice cream truck vendor was Harry Burt,

•T he United States ice cream market expects to reach 75 billion units by 2024.

•A custard-style, termed “French,” begins with a base of egg yolks, sugar, and cream. It has a smooth, creamy texture and flavor.

•“ Philadelphia-style” omits eggs; therefore, it does not need a cooking base. The texture is lighter and more delicate than the French style and the ice cream easy to make; for example, the mixture is already cold before transitioning to a machine.

Without access to a machine, place your ice cream mixture into a freezer-safe container and allow an hour to freeze. If you are using an electric handmixer, stir vigorously. Repeat every 30 minutes over two or three hours until the contents freeze. Voilà, homemade ice cream!

The History of Fireworks on July 4th

What

would July 4th be without fireworks? Many of us found out last year when most Independence Day celebrations were canceled.

It wasn’t too much fun. There’s something very special and patriotic about watching fireworks. But have you ever wondered why fireworks are so closely tied to July 4th?

As it turns out, setting off fireworks of all shapes and colors, particularly red, white, and blue, goes almost as far back as our independence as a country.

Declaration’s first public readings on July 8th, in front of local militia troops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; however, the first organized celebration of Independence Day would occur in Philadelphia on July 4th, 1777.

The Pennsylvania Evening Post wrote on July 5th, 1777, “Yesterday the 4th of July, being the anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America, was celebrated in this city with demonstrations of joy and festivity. About noon all the armed ships and rallies in the river were drawn up before the city, dressed in the gayest manner, with colors of the United States and streamers displayed.”

Fireworks have a long and colorful history, dating back to the summer of 1776. During the first months of the Revolutionary War, on July 1st, delegates of the Continental Congress were in Philadelphia, PA, debating over whether the 13 original colonies should declare their independence from Britain’s Parliament, as well as King George III himself.

The armed ships on the river fired a 13gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies with festivities, including an elegant dinner (no hot dogs at this shindig), a military demonstration, and a performance by a Hessian band. The evening’s activities closed with a grand exhibition of fireworks, which began and concluded with 13 rockets, illuminating the city of Philadelphia.

The night of July 1st, news arrived that British ships had sailed into New York Harbor, posing an immediate threat to the Continental troops commanded by George Washington. On July 2nd, delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of independence, followed on July 9th by New York, the initial hold-out colony. On July 3rd, even as Congress revised a draft of the Declaration composed by Thomas Jefferson, a very excited John Adams took pen to paper to write to his wife, Abigail.

John Adams’ hometown of Boston, MA, had its own display of fireworks that July 4th, as Colonel Thomas Crafts of the Sons of Liberty took the opportunity to set off fireworks and shells over Boston Common. In the years to come, various cities continued the tradition of celebrating independence, holding picnics, parades, speeches, and shooting off fireworks.

Boston was the first city to designate July 4th as an official holiday in 1783.

John Adams wrote, “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch, in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival.

It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews (sic), games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of the continent to the other from this time forward forevermore.” Although Adams was off by a couple of days (July 4th, not July 2nd), you get the idea.

So on July 4th, after making 86, mostly small, changes, to Jefferson’s draft, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, though most delegates didn’t even sign the document until August 2nd, 1776. Some spur-of-the-moment celebrations greeted the

Adams lived to celebrate 50 years of America’s independence. Oddly, on July 4th, 1826, the 50th anniversary of Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence, he died at his home in Quincy, MA, just 5 hours after Thomas Jefferson’s death in Virginia.

Independence Day celebrations really became a staple in America after the War of 1812.

Fireworks were more widely available by that time, but due to public safety concerns, cannon and gunfire were gradually phased out over the years.

In 1870, Congress established Independence Day as an official holiday. This year, as you celebrate our country’s independence, remember the simple beginnings of the 4th of July and appreciate what makes the day so very special.

The risk levels are split into categories: Very High, High, Moderate, Low and Unknown. For each country there are specific recommendations and whether there are entry requirements: a negative COVID test and/ or quarantining. This information is in constant flux, so check often right up to your point of departure.

Domestic and regional travel With the risks and complications that are involved in international travel, domestic travel destinations will be the top choice for many families, especially road trips. A trip by car is easier to plan, and itineraries are easier to adjust.

Plan Ahead for Summer Travel Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer, illustrated just how eager Americans are to start getting out again.

With about half the country at least partially protected with vaccines, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said that 7.1 million people were screened at U.S. airport checkpoints during Memorial Day weekend. In 2020, only 1.3 million were screened at U.S. airports during Memorial Day weekend.

As you look toward fall travel plans, Christmas and even next summer, it’s important to plan ahead, get COVID-19 updates for your destination – and try to build flexibility into your schedule.

Planning

It’s simple math. Demand for planes, trains, rental cars and hotel rooms is spiking following severe capacity limitations during the past year. The ability of companies to meet this pent-up demand remains to be seen.

For a variety of reasons, many travel and entertainment businesses are having difficulty hiring employees. In all likelihood, reservations of all types will be tight and in high demand throughout 2021 and into the summer of 2022.

International travel The first step when considering any international destination is to have the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about COVID in that country, at the CDC’s COVID-19 Travel Recommendations at cdc.gov/travel.

If national parks are on your travel plans, check their websites early and often to see if they add or subtract from their entry requirements.

Flexible cancellation policies During the summer of 2020, airlines, tour operators, cruises and hotels had to completely change their cancellation policies and become more consumer friendly, eliminating cancellation charges and extra fees.

What these policies look like as we move into a time of fewer COVID complications will vary. The important thing for travelers is to check with each company about their policies related to changes and cancellations.

While planning usually leads to lower fares and better hotel rates, in 2021 and 2022 making early reservations may be the difference between successfully booking a trip and coming up empty.

Nevertheless, complications will still exist at destinations in the U.S. For instance, national parks have varying policies. At Glacier National Park in Montana there are ticketed-entry reservations required for all visitors through Sept. 6, according to the National Park Service. And at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado entry reservations extend through Oct. 11. But the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Grand Canyon National Park do not currently require timed-entry tickets.

Travel insurance Depending on where you plan to go and the types of reservations that you are making, you may want to consider travel insurance. Prior to COVID, most insurance policies did not cover pandemics, but that’s no longer the case. But new policies that cover pandemics tend to be pricey.

But your best bet may be to forgo travel insurance and make reservations that have generous and flexible cancellation policies.

Finally….

Don’t toss your mask, continue to wash your hands and keep in mind physical distancing when in a crowd. Many countries still have low vaccination rates.

Vacations are possible again, but it will pay to plan, do research and protect you and your family with sensible precautions.

HABITS Start with an honest approach to your dietary habits by recording the positives, the areas of improvement, and the untold secrets. Each week assess your written list and make one change per category.

For instance: GOOD HABIT: Not skipping breakfast, even if running late.

SOLUTION: Cut fast food meals in half.

IMPROVED HABIT: Exercise twice weekly. Change: Exercise three times weekly.

SCHEDULE Create a schedule that works for you, including a time for healthy snacks.

Eating every two hours from 8 AM to 12 PM; then, a snack at 3 PM and dinner at 6 PM may work. When the body eats at particular times, it regulates hormones, sugar, and metabolism levels.

• How often do you have hunger pains after a meal? Do you need to eat more?

• Do you eat a salad as a substitute for a meal?

• Do you pack snacks when working or traveling? Preparedness eliminates the need to spend money on a vending machine or prepackaged items.

SUGAR Addiction,

• Do you enjoy drinking infused water? Cucumber water can curb the appetite, making you feel full. Start preparing a pitcher the night before.

• Have you ever made a fruit smoothie? Look for recipes low in calories and carbohydrates and full of vitamins and minerals.

• How often do you consume premade sugar-based drinks? Try to curb your intake of drinks to one per day, including wine, beer, and cocktails.

Each day, write down all foods consumed. It will provide a visual to assess the day. The accrued information is a practical resource to help you plan how to go forward.

Hidden Attractions in the Foothills and Mountains of 5 North Carolina

opened in 1930, the southern Highland Art Guild showcases traditional and contemporary pieces from Southern Appalachia. At the Folk Art Center, visitors can see pieces from different decades, as well as the first craft shop in the United States.

tourists and locals alike, North Carolina is a beacon for beautiful travel locations. The Tarheel state stretches from the mountains to the shore and offers something for every interest, whether it’s hiking, shopping, or sailing. One of my favorite things about our state is the mountains. North Carolina is home to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. In these areas, people can visit historical sites, amusement parks, colleges, and more. While there are popular tourist attractions, such as Grandfather Mountain and Tweetsie Railroad, the foothills and mountains also house unknown attractions off the beaten path which are just as much of a jewel as the well-known spots. Take a look at nine hidden attractions in our state’s foothills and mountain regions.

Oconaluftee Indian Village in Cherokee Take a tour of a 1750s Cherokee Village at the Oconaluftee Indian Village. Visitors will learn about Cherokee Indian traditions and trade techniques. You can also tour the Village Square Grounds and Village Council House. In these areas, you will be able to take part in traditional songs and dance, and learn about the village’s systems, beliefs, government, family, and social structure.

Elijah Mountain Gem Mine in Hendersonville Animals, gems, and a T-Rex skull and fossils, what more could you want? At the Elijah Mountain Gem Mine, tourists can mine for gems, including rubies, sapphires, amethysts, opals, and more.

You can also feed their pets, have a picnic, or see the mine’s full-size T-Rex skull and fossils on site. According to TripAdvisor, this attraction has been voted the number-one gem mine in the Carolinas.

Fields of the Wood in Murphy Located in the Great Smoky Mountains and Cherokee County, the Fields of the Wood in Murphy is a Bible-based theme park. From sunrise to sunset, you can tour exhibits of Prayer Mountain, the Ten Commandment Mountain, and the All-Nations Cross. A gift shop and café are also on site.

Henry River Mill Village in Hildebran About an hour’s drive outside of Asheville is the Henry River Mill Village in Hildebran. Movie fans may already be familiar with the site, as the Henry River Mill Village is where District 12 of The Hunger Games was filmed.

Before the mill closed in 1973, it was a bustling industrial center. Now, it is the site of an abandoned town that people can explore.

The Land of Oz Theme Park in Beech Mountain Once shut down in 1980, but now back in business, the Land of Oz Theme Park is a must-visit for The Wizard of Oz movie and book fans. Open for only certain times throughout the year, don’t miss your chance to take a walk on the Yellow Brick Road and visit with Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Lion, Scarecrow, and the Wizard through the park’s different exhibits and experiences.

The House of Mugs in Collettsville Owners Avery and Doris Sisk share their love for coffee mugs by displaying about 20,000 mugs on the outside of their house.

Also known as the Collettsville Cup House, the couple started the collection when they hung a set of 15 mugs as a decoration.

Western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville Home to over 60 animals, the Western North Carolina Nature Center is on a mission to bring people, animals, and nature together. Visitors can see river otters, black bears, cougars, and more in their natural habitat, and learn about the region’s biodiversity and animals. Kids of all ages will enjoy a trip to this attraction.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Tours and Tastings in Mills River Another site located in the Asheville and Henderson County area, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Tours and Tastings actually originated in California in 1980. A few years later, owner Ken Grossman brought his beer to the Tarheel state and the rest is history. Fast forward to 2021, and tourists can enjoy craft beers, tastings, and tours. Perfect for an adult day trip.

Six Products Born in the Tarheel State

Carolina is known for many things. Celebrities, politicians, athletes, historic landmarks, well-known attractions, and more have made our state famous. Other additions to the list are the different food and drink products that originated in North Carolina. Many people are familiar with these products, but not their history. Let’s take a quick look at some of the famous products that are made in North Carolina.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Right here in Winston-Salem, Krispy Kreme was founded by Vernon Rudolph in 1937. He rented a building in Old Salem and with a yeast-raised recipe from a New Orleans chef, created the original doughnuts that we now know today. Rudolph started selling the doughnuts to local grocery stores for 25 cents a dozen and the rest is history. Krispy Kreme doughnuts come in many different flavors, but (in my opinion) there is nothing better than a warm original glazed doughnut melting in your mouth. And don’t worry—Krispy Kreme has locations throughout the world if you ever get a hankering when outside of North Carolina.

Texas Pete Hot Sauce Another Winston-Salem native creation is Texas Pete.

Contrary to the popular notion that the hot sauce originated in Texas, the Garner family, which consisted of father Samuel, “Mother Jane,” and brothers Thad, Ralph, and Harold, launched their famous hot sauce in Winston-Salem by making it on their family’s stove.

Since the 1940s, Texas Pete hot sauce has grown to include buffalo-wing sauce, chili sauce, pepper sauce, seafood cocktail sauce, and honey mustard sauce.

Cheerwine Started in L.D. Peeler’s grocery store in Salisbury during World War I, Cheerwine celebrated the 100th anniversary of its creation in 2017. This cherry-flavored soda’s recipe has been passed down throughout the Peeler family and the drink can be found in the Southern states and California.

Cheerwine and its history are so famous in the state that a whole festival is dedicated to the drink. Each year, the Cheerwine Festival is held in downtown Salisbury. Attendees can enjoy Carolina pulled pork, covered in a Cheerwine barbecue sauce, merchandise, music, and more.

Mt. Olive Pickles Named after its location, the Mt. Olive Pickle Company was founded in 1926 in Mount Olive, North Carolina, and quickly became the largest privately-owned pickle company in the states.

Today, Mt. Olive Pickles come in multiple varieties and are available in major grocery stores. The company’s efforts span more than just making pickles. The Mt. Olive Pickle Company supports the University of Mount Olive and created the Mt. Olive Pickle Company Foundation in 1994. Just like Cheerwine, Mt. Olive Pickles have their own celebration: a New Year’s Eve Pickle Drop in Mount Olive, in which a 3.5-foot lighted pickle is dropped from the Mount Olive Volunteer Fire Department truck.

Pepsi-Cola One of the oldest products made in NC comes from 1898 in New Bern. Pharmacist Caleb Bradham developed a fountain drink, Pepsi-Cola, to help with digestion and increase a person’s energy.

He began to offer this drink to patrons in his drugstore’s soda fountain. Only a few years later, in 1902, Bradham took his creation and turned it into a business. Fun fact: the soft drink’s name wasn’t always Pepsi. It started out as Brad’s Drink. Then, in 1898, it became Pepsi-Cola, and was changed again in 1961 when the drink became just Pepsi.

Lance Crackers Peanut butter, cheese, and vanilla crème—the list goes on and on with the types available in Lance Crackers.

In 1913, Philip Lance took 500 pounds of Virginia peanuts, roasted, and sold them. After the success of his peanut business took off, Lance started making peanut butter. To help people experience the full taste of the peanut butter, Lance’s wife and daughters put the food on two crackers, placed them together, and created the peanut butter sandwich. This led to the founding of the famous Lance Crackers.

There is always a special place in a North Carolinian’s heart for products made in our home state. The next time you go to the grocery store, a restaurant, or another place, and get one of these creations, you can now say you know the product’s history and true connection to the Tarheel state.

Nine Rules of Friendship

in pigtails, big brown eyes looking sad, a child of five sits in her booster seat asking why Jillian, a classmate, doesn’t like her. Moms are fantastic at listening, allowing a child to verbalize her worries.

Sometimes, their words come slowly between moments of silence; other times, the words come rushing out. The dialogue, whether the child is five or fifteen, remains constant. Relationships take an ability to listen, reflect, communicate, and understand that not all friends play by the same rules.

RULE #1: Never Regret Friendships “ Why do we always have to play your game?”

A young child will inevitably meet a friend and, in time, question the relationship. Reflection arrives, and a desire to create a list of expectations in being and having this friend. Of course, each value will be challenged. Faith comes into play when values are tested. Confrontations sometimes teach and strengthen relationships. There is always something to learn; it is a gift of clarity! Never regret meeting a person, even if the friendship was short-lived and ended poorly. With hope, two people can learn a vital lesson.

RULE #2: Choose to be Loyal “Did you really say that about me?”

Don’t expect loyalty if you cannot provide honesty. A reputation for integrity and dependability is a quality that most will expect and deliver in return. It comes with the blessing of better health and a feeling of happiness. By avoiding gossip, negative commentary, or complaining about a friend publicly, you can ensure the benefits—a large number of loyal friends.

RULE #3: Actively Listen “ Did you hear anything I just said? I’m going to stop telling you things.”

The social skills learned as a teenager through the early 20s influence the quality of one’s life. Every aspect— relationships, one’s support network, career, and extra-curricular activities—relies on the skill of actively listening. Most people focus more on speaking than listening. When he or she processes dialogue, the good listener learns essential information and how to respond.

Looking directly at the speaker without distractions is one effective strategy!

RULE #4: Privacy and Sharing “Promise me! You won’t tell anyone!”

A confidential sharing of information is an honored form of trust. Sometimes, it comes with a condition. A clear reminder about what is appropriate to share and affirmed in the privacy of your friendship. In the verbal response, “I promise,” you verify the secret. Never make a promise if it comes at the cost of a friend’s safety or health.

RULE #5: Offer Advice Gently!

“I need help!”

Thinking before speaking leads to challenging consequences and sometimes shatters friendship. Even in the heat of a moment, take a deep breath, or return after a day to use gentle words. Confronting an argument can remove barriers and fears, while allowing room to strengthen connections. It’s even okay to start with, “I’m going to say this as gently as I can….”

How many people can you count on to be there if needed? The banner of “loyal,” “actively listening,” and “kindness” includes “support.”

Friendship is not about convenience.

It requires an effort to be there when a buddy needs help.

RULE #6 Fight for Friendship

Good friends never “leave!” They may move to a different county or relocate across the country, but the relationship can continue with open communication. Even when friends move to another school, a good friend requires more than just a few minutes to spare. Act intentionally to use every source of communication to maintain correspondence, such as face-time, texting, e-mail, handwritten letters, and scheduling visits! Every effort promotes your relationship!

“ I realize I haven’t been there for you. Please forgive me!”

Never think it is too late to apologize for a past action or word. Holding tightly to the past leads to a deep sense of regret! Admitting words of forgiveness is the first step to find peace within ourselves.

RULE #7: Play Together “ Meet you on the monkey bars after lunch today?” or, “Let’s plan on a one-day road trip!”

Remember the days of childhood!

The excitement was seeing the playground equipment and the opportunity to meet new friends.

The experience offered spontaneity, laughter, and unstructured play. In a world of schedules, take time to plan similar occasions for recreation and fun!

RULE #9: Promote Close and Distant Friendships “We’ll always be friends!”

A TIP FOR PARENTS Wait as long as possible to buy your child a cell phone. Sharing yours offers a means to monitor text messages while guiding and interpreting dialogue!

May 1, 2019, Dion Williams became Piedmont Advantage Credit Union’s (PACU) President and CEO. Within ten months on the job, COVID-19 is declared a pandemic, a national emergency ensues, and statewide stay-at-home orders spread across the nation. Advancing the credit union’s strategic priorities could have stalled. Instead, according to Williams, they accelerated primarily due to the culture of PACU and resiliency of its employees.

“It’s the tough times that test an organization’s culture and values; and the commitment of our employees shown to members, our operations, and each other has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Williams said.

Williams stresses that this culture stems from credit unions, in general, having a shared purpose of “People Helping People.”

“This purpose acts as the North Star that helps to show us where we need to go and why, even though the how is specific to each credit union,” he said, and added, “There is no doubt that the pandemic accelerated our strategic priorities, primarily due to the fact these priorities reinforced this underlining purpose.”

When Williams took the leadership helm at PACU, he set out to create an infrastructure where employees were positioned to simply serve its members. This meant offering new technologies for self-service transactions, so employees had the time to problem-solve.

During the pandemic, Schline and Williams communicated regularly.

Schline shared he saw first-hand that Williams took care of his employees first, safeguarding their well-being by providing remote work opportunities where possible, and limiting branch access to the public; and when PACU members needed help paying bills, PACU responded with loan forbearance and fee waivers.

According to Williams, the irony of the infrastructure was that it existed on the drawing board before the pandemic and served a remarkable purpose during the pandemic.

The rationale was that changing consumer behaviors bring with them an expectation of more technology and automation to accompany the service experience. Thus, contactless payments for debit and credit cards, digital wallet options, and upgraded ATM’s satisfied the expectations of an evolving consumer base, while also providing safer service delivery options during the pandemic.

“What impressed me most was PACU’s ability to offer Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to small business owners in its service regions. At the time, PACU didn’t offer business-lending solutions, but managed to create a new line of business in a few weeks, so that it could offer PPP loans to area businesses in desperate need of these federal funds to pay their employees,” Schline said.

Carolinas Credit Union League President and CEO Dan Schline, who has known Williams for 24 years and was aware of Williams’ infrastructure plans, agrees with Williams’ overall credit union sentiments. “While the pandemic threw all financial institutions for a loop, because of the ‘People Helping People’ philosophy within the credit union industry, the immediate needs of employees and members intuitively came first,” Schline said.

“When the needs of employees and members are the priority, long-term institutional goals aren’t sacrificed. They actually become amplified,” Schline added.

“Dion recognized the importance of offering business services and reacted deliberately and purposely to help his executive team make it happen.

Dion’s can-do attitude is inspiring,” Schline admitted. “Through all of this, PACU maintained its long-term focus of modernizing delivery channels.”

LESSONS LEARNED In preparing for this executive spotlight, Williams took the time to reflect on this past year. He learned that organizations that truly operate with a servant’s heart pivot faster and capitalize on the opportunities inherent in any crisis. Yet, Williams emphasized that communication is a critical element of leading a team through any crisis.

“Communications must be frequent and transparent, truly say something, and provide reassurance. Any message communicated must be in harmony with the actions taken. Thus, stakeholders hear the message, see the actions, and gain confidence in the plan and its execution,” he said.

Williams has held numerous leadership positions, with the most recent, prior to PACU, as chief executive at Del-One Federal Credit Union in Dover, Delaware. As a leader, he uses the four guiding principles of problem-solving, innovation, planning, and connectivity to help him position institutions for future growth. He credits these principles as part of PACU’s success during this past year. Williams elaborates briefly on these principles below.

• Problem-solving. I encourage my leadership team to focus on finding solutions to emerging issues and on making progress on important

priorities that may have been difficult to address in businessas-usual conditions.

We ask ourselves how something can be accomplished. It is really easy to talk oneself into inaction. Businesses that survive and even thrive are the ones that push the envelope, ask the hard questions, and are not afraid to fail. We have to be prepared to adapt to the unexpected. The outcome may not be what we first expected, but if we are adaptable and forward-thinking, the outcomes can be even better. When the PPP loans were introduced, PACU had no business-lending program in place. Fast-forward a few short weeks, and nearly $1.5 million in loans to over 50 small businesses had been originated. That’s the epitome of recognizing a need and not being afraid to take a chance to meet it.

• Innovation. Having to solve compounded problems in a short time period accelerated innovation, embracing experimentation with new ideas and cross-functional collaboration, and a breaking down of hierarchies to tap into ideas from across levels. Innovation, traditionally seen as driven internally by people coming together physically for ideation, is also getting redefined in a virtual world with a focus on finding creative ways to respond to the external challenges and opportunities. Greater adoption of technology is driving the realization that many activities traditionally seen to be needing significant investment can be done with less.

Financial services is a people business. It always has been and always will be. We build infrastructure such that the technology and innovation are present for those who want or need self-service. Yet, we utilize our human capital to build relationships and deliver a consultative approach to their interactions with members. In the end, it is multiple-service delivery-channels with a well-trained staff, committed to high service standards.

• Planning. Contrary to the discourse about today being only about survival, I ask my leadership team to stress the importance of spending time on planning ahead. The days of the five-year plan may be gone, with every strategy having the potential to get disrupted. Using data and observing trends, we can develop strategies to anticipate multiple scenarios.

With a fast-changing external environment, ‘plan, experiment, evaluate, and improve’ is our future business model.

For example, the strategic planning session in 2019 was prior to the pandemic and focused on this business model philosophy. It was less of a long-term strategic outlook and

more of a philosophical discussion of where the credit union is headed. Clear themes from this session were a commitment to the service experience for members, building infrastructure to serve members regardless of generation or geography, and forming a foundation to address needs that are unique to the communities we serve. The progress from the 2019 session to the 2020 session led to a more strategically focused and longer-term outlook.

• Connectivity. In light of the greater dependence on technology for virtual working, a lot has been said about the changes in the modes of communication recently. At PACU, we believe there have been even bigger changes to the very nature of engagement with our colleagues. Walking the tightrope between managing the expectations and motivation of employees and creating a sense of community when people are physically distant is important.

For example, there was never any thought to halting training during the pandemic. Rather, the question was, how do we make this happen? How do we stay connected? PACU holds two all-staff training days during the year, Employee Engagement Day (October) and Simply Service Day (February). Both events continued during the pandemic, as segments were pre-recorded and aired to staff during “watch parties,” consisting of smaller groups such that consistent messaging was received and smaller group discussions could be held. In addition, a new intranet was launched. This was planned prior to COVID; however, the timing was fortuitous to enhance connectivity when there were limits on in-person interactions.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM DAN SCHLINE OF CAROLINAS CREDIT UNION LEAGUE When I first started in credit unions in 1997, Dion Williams and I had offices in the same building. We were certainly thrilled when Dion returned to North Carolina in 2019 as President and CEO of Piedmont Advantage Credit Union.

Dion brings great purpose and passion to his work at Piedmont Advantage. In just his first year at the credit union, we saw that purpose-driven leadership style manifest itself in the creation of the PACU Foundation and the “Simply Service” delivery model. As a leader, Dion is very deliberate in making sure he and his team are focused on taking care of their members and their communities. This reflects well on the entire credit union community in North Carolina. When we tell the story of credit unions to lawmakers and elected officials, Piedmont Advantage has much to share and much of which to be proud.

The ability of leaders like Dion to stay focused and execute during challenging times makes all the difference. I’m excited to see where Dion takes Piedmont Advantage next!

The curious shopper discovers she has direct access to fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables, herbs, dairy-based products, and proteins. The woman or man behind the table provides a small sampling of popular items; yet, shoppers can experience a more comprehensive array of goods by visiting the farm. It’s vital to introduce yourself and inquire if there is a “farm store.” Most likely, it’s on a familiar road, not too far from home! “Support local” is more than just an expression. to be an American? Want to be more patriotic?

There’s more to being patriotically American than just waving an American flag, studying American history in school, and celebrating American holidays. While some American ideals and a foundational understanding are taught in our schools, some important aspects are neglected.

We can teach our children outside of the classroom to help light the way to a brighter future. On a deeper core level, we can explore how to be a true American patriot, carrying and passing on the metaphoric torch to the next generation. Our Founding Fathers, the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance, and patriotic songs are not just historical mile markers in American history, but foundational links to our inner identity that continue to set the standard for daily living, and enable us to live with honesty, honor, valor, and integrity.

Our founding lights the way to today and tomorrow, so remember to honor our traditional roots and integrate them into our lives. The more we share with our kids where we came from, where we are today, and where we are headed as patriotic Americans, the better our lives will be, and the more promising our futures.

The 50 stars, like a new constellation, are symbolic of our 50 states, and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies. Red is a color of passion and blood that was shed in battle to defend our country and its citizens. It is also a color of strength, courage, honor, and valor. White is a color known for peace, purity, innocence, truth, and light that prevails in all darkness. Blue represents perseverance, justice, and vigilance.

HISTORY IS FAR MORE THAN TRUE STORIES Our lives are composed of an intricately woven past, present, and future. Without our founding fathers, who and where would we be today? Educating the next generations about our history leads to a greater understanding of our roots as Americans, and shapes the development of their cultural identity.

History lessons don’t have to be boring and, with kids’ typically shorter attention spans, they’re best digested if they’re not. Help your child become more motivated to learn American history interactively. Use real-life examples, watch videos, sing patriotic songs, and visit historical monuments. There’s

history everywhere, so head on out to discover the local history all around you.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T, DIVERSITY AND UNITY One of the greatest things you can teach your kids is respect for self and others, including people, animals, and our environment. No matter how different we may be or how passionately we may disagree, we can take the high road and stay respectful. Imagine how much better off we can be when we come together in unity to make our world a better place. Helping our kids understand and embrace diversity and differing views is essential, and is something we can all appreciate.

America is like a colorful patchwork quilt composed of many different fabric swatches with a variety of patterns.

Imagine how boring life would be if there were only one race, one age, or one personality. As established in the Declaration of Independence, we were all created equally and unite as one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Let’s encourage our children to maintain open minds and open hearts, with a peaceful and respectful approach that values and appreciates others, no matter how different they may be.

Together we stand, and united we will live. Let us heartfully, mindfully, and gratefully live our lives to the fullest as we pass on the metaphoric torch, like that of our Statue of Liberty, to the next generations, who we pray and hope will do the same.

Thank God for Facetime

My

nearly one-year-old son can be playing in a world of his own with a toy in either hand, but when that familiar “beep beep beep beep” alert sounds from my smartphone, suddenly nothing else matters. The toys waving in the air come to a halt, and his eyes widen, excitement taking over his chubby cheeks. He knows that on the other end of that robotic ringing sound is a familiar face ready to sing songs, blow kisses, and “ooh” and “ahh” over every little thing he does.

Living hundreds of miles away from family and having a baby born in the midst of a global pandemic, our little family has experienced fewer resources more precious than “Facetime.”

In a world where we often feel the burnout from technology and social media, Facetime has continued to be the one app that I’m grateful for, day-in and day out. Of course, our family isn’t the only one who has come to appreciate and adopt Facetime as a means to stay in touch. Apple first released the iPhone-only application in 2013, and has kept families and friends connected for the last eight years, allowing real-time video calls to make the distance feel a little less difficult to bear.

Picking up the phone and seeing the other person on the screen has become second nature—so much so, that it’s pretty evident that the novelty has worn off for most of us. It’s easy to forget how incredibly inventive it really is and that there was a time where movies like Back to The

Future gave us a glimpse at the same type of technology. But back then, it was almost laughable to really imagine! There have been many moments where my Grandma back home in Florida gets overwhelmed seeing my son (her great-grandson) on Facetime, and reminds me just how special it is that we can do this. “I live for these calls!” she tells me each week when she gets to see little baby giggles in real-time.

Hearing her tell me how amazing it is and how she would have given anything to have this option when my big sister and I were little and still in New York really helps keep things in perspective.

Keep Them Short - This is especially important if you have little ones!

Phone calls are better suited for longer conversations; keep Facetime calls to a minimum to allow both parties to focus and enjoy the time before going back to whatever they need to do.

From being able to watch my nieces and nephews in Florida blow out their birthday candles to having my Mom and Grandma see our little boy crawl for the very first time, Facetime gives me the ability to create really special memories I would otherwise be robbed of due to living out of state. Does a video chat app take the place of real, in-person communication and memory-making? Of course not!

Does it make all the difference and help us share our sweet baby with those we love most in the world when we can’t be in person? Absolutely!

Give the Child the Phone - I know it may sound risky, but there’s something really fun and endearing about seeing the world from a child’s perspective. If they run around with the phone, let them for a little while. The grandparent or aunt on the other end may get a little dizzy, but it will make a fun memory.

If you are looking to embrace Facetime more with your loved ones, the last year has taught me a few things to get the most out of these calls.

Schedule Calls Regularly - It can be easy to let time march on and realize it’s been weeks since the last time you saw each other. Try picking one day a week or month that you’ll aim to “Facetime” together. Life happens, so if you need to reschedule or cancel, that’s definitely okay; at least now, it’s on your calendar.

Use a Phone Stand or Tripod - Go handsfree, so you can focus on enjoying the conversation and move around freely. This is very helpful for older family members who may have difficulty holding their cell phones at a good angle to see themselves, and improve comfort for them on the call.

Prioritize Special Moments & Milestones - Holidays, birthdays, and special celebrations are difficult to miss out on, so Facetime on those special days to feel a little less “apart.” If there’s an exciting milestone happening, surprise your loved ones and phone them, so they can see the big moment!

Remember Who Treasures It Most - It can be easy to feel like Facetiming is one more thing to add to your to-do list. Try to remember, even if it’s a short and sweet call, that seeing faces and getting to talk with family means so much to your elderly family and friends, or those who may be having a tough season.

Walking and Sitting Moves

Knight, looking ahead to her 65th birthday, noticed a sharp pain in her lower back. She found mobility, moving from a sitting to a standing position or climbing and descending stairs, more complex. Doctors explained the difficulty. Knight received a diagnosis of irreversible stenosis and osteoporosis in two hip points. For three years, she practiced yoga and increased sessions to three times weekly.

Knight writes, “Seven years ago, I received the diagnosis. Exercise strengthened my core and flexibility. I no longer avoided movement; instead, I decided to stop using the elevators and escalators and start moving. I climb stairs and park at a distance to walk to my destination. My greatest joy is holding the balance of standing poses.”

TRY YOGA Studies suggest yoga benefits those who suffer from lower back and neck pain, weight loss, and menopausal symptoms.

AGING AND STRENGTH Muscle strength is a physical skill that helps us get out of bed and proceed through daily actions. Whether the movement is walking, lifting, raising arms, or crouching low, strong muscles help protect the joints from enduring weight and pressure. Without daily exercise and intentional movement, muscular weakness can compromise the body and increase the risk of maintaining balance.

SITTING MOVES Connect with the mind and spirit by engaging in short exercises to add energy or gain flexibility. The following poses are ideal for beginners.

What impacts the 640 muscles in the body?

• A sedentary lifestyle, job, and diet.

• Body type, race, ethnicity, and natural bone density.

• Hormonal changes before and during menopause.

• Muscle diseases, such as joint injuries, arthritis, and stroke.

• Conditions affecting the nerves and blood, such as diabetes, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. • Sarcopenia, an advanced stage of skeletal muscle atrophy, impacts individuals at an advanced age or time spent inactive due to an illness.

While you cannot change your genes, you can begin a preventative measure!

It begins with breathing. Without pushing or straining, the body opens, “lets go,” and then relaxes. Not many forms of exercise allow you to understand the power of the breath, teach awareness of the body, and know how the culmination releases emotions. Yoga teaches, “Just by changing the rhythm of our breathing, we can change our mood.”

1. EASY SITTING POSE: (Warning: Avoid this posture if you have a severe knee or hip injury.) Start by sitting on the floor or using a firm bolster pillow, lean against a wall.

If it’s comfortable to sit crossedlegged, do so. Keep your hands on your knees. Relax your whole body by exhaling, dropping your shoulder, and breathe. Maintain the position as long as it is comfortable.

2. SEATED TWIST: Seated on the floor (always on a carpet or mat) with legs crossed, extend your hand to the floor behind your hip. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds. The posture offers a great stretch while relieving tension.

3. COBBLER’S POSE: Seated, place the heels of your feet together and hold on to your ankles. Hold for 30 seconds to two minutes. The position targets the hips and groin muscles, allowing you to straighten your back when sitting.

WALKING MOVES One of the best ways to energize, build your fitness level, burn calories, and enjoy the outdoors is walking.

Without stretching first, you may risk tightening hips, hamstrings, and the lower back. Try the following yoga positions to complement your walking workouts.

1. CAT POSE: Kneel on all fours with your hands placed under your shoulders. Lift your tailbone toward the ceiling and inhale. In the exhale, lift the back like an angry cat. Repeat five times. This posture loosens your back after the compression caused by walking.

2. CRESCENT LUNGE POSE: Start with one leg forward, ensuring the front knee is at a 90-degree angle. The feet should be shoulderdistance apart. Press through the heel of your back leg and flatten out the tailbone until you feel the lower back lengthen and the abs draw inward. Hold for 20 breaths. The posture helps relax the hip flexors.

3. FORWARD BEND POSE: Start by inhaling and lifting your arms overhead. In the exhale, slide your hands down your legs. Stop at the knees or extend down to the feet. The stretch impacts the sitting bones at the hamstrings. If flexible, you can flatten your back and either bend the knees or keep them firm. Try and hold the pose for 20 breaths.

Without yoga, many lives would be limited; instead of fearing the pain, you can find an exercise, whether it’s yoga, pilates, walking or biking, to build your core strength!

As you stroll through the local farmers’ markets, you may notice them lined with baskets that’re overflowing from the vibrant summer harvest, or that your home garden is beaming with sweet scents. You may spot racks bursting with cucumbers, strawberries, zucchini, Swiss chard, tomatoes, green beans, corn, cantaloupe, watermelon, and today’s special highlight, arugula.

Fresh arugula leaves have a distinctive spicy kick that will enhance the flavors in a variety of salad, sandwich, and pasta recipes; however, the amount of robust flavor will depend on its maturity. Often, baby arugula or arugula sprouts are milder and more delicate, while mature arugula is more peppery. But they’re not only a tasty addition to your meal; they also provide wonderous health benefits for the body. They deliver vitamin K and calcium to keep your bones strong, they protect your heart, may help with controlling weight, reduce cancer risk, help with digestion, and may assist in regulating blood pressure.

How to cook with arugula? Its bright notes make for a tasty alternative to spinach in lasagna, or as a simple side salad. When paired with pine nuts and basil, it can be pureed into a delicious pesto to be served with pasta and fresh peas. It can be sautéed for a ramen noodles dish or with garden vegetables, added to crostini, chicken noodle soup, and of course, our crispy parmesan crusted chicken! With only 10-minutes of prep time, you’ll have the crispiest chicken without the mess of frying.

Oven-Baked Parmesan-Crusted Chicken + Lemon Arugula Salad INGREDIENTS For the Chicken: 2 Chicken Breasts 2 large Eggs ½ cup Parmesan, grated ½ cup Panko Breadcrumbs 2 tsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil ¼ tsp. Salt ¼ tsp. Black Pepper

For the Salad: 2-3 cups Fresh Arugula 1 T bsp. Lemon Juice, about 1 lemon Zest of 1 Lemon 1 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 Tbsp. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar ¼ tsp. Salt ¼ tsp. Black Pepper

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. P reheat oven to 425F. Prepare your baking pan by placing a wire rack in the center.

2. W hisk the eggs in a medium-sized bowl, then set aside. In a similar-sized bowl, mix the panko breadcrumbs, grated parmesan, salt, and black pepper.

3. P ound the chicken breasts out to ¼” thick, then generously dip into the egg bowl, then the coat into the breadcrumb mixture, and place onto the wire rack.

Repeat with the remaining chicken. Pat any extra breadcrumb mixture onto the chicken breasts.

4. L ightly spray or drizzle the chicken with olive oil, then bake for 10-12 minutes.

Remove from the oven to flip, then lightly spray or drizzle the other side with olive oil, as well. Bake an additional 8-12 minutes, or until fully cooked. (You can also broil for 1-2 minutes towards the end for extra crispiness.)

5. A llow the chicken to rest for at least 5 minutes, while you toss together the salad.

6. I n a large bowl, whisk together the raw apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, lemon zest, extra virgin olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Add in the arugula, then toss until evenly coated in the dressing. Enjoy!

July’s American Historical Moments Patriotism

is a concept that brings people together. In July, especially, the feeling emanates with the reminder of how “We the People” live in a safe, well-defended free nation. The struggle for defined freedom began with collective ideas, planning, collaboration, and willingness to stand and verbalize the conditions of the fight. Throughout history, the acts of people showcase the American notion of grit and determination.

JULY 2nd, 1776 Between 1763 and 1775, Britain began imposing laws to regulate trade and created a new burden, excess taxes. The payment was expected in British pounds sterling rather than colonial currency , and new bill even brought forth the necessity to mail legal documents and papered goods with a government-issued stamp. In the midst of rising tensions, colonials, denied any right to voice complaints to the British Parliament and willing to sacrifice themselves to create a democratic nation for all, stepped forward to form the Continental Congress. As state delegates lobbied to support severing ties with Britain, “The Committee of Five”— John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Roger Livingston—began drafting the Declaration of Independence.

After the final touches, Jefferson presented the document to Congress on June 28th, 1776. On July 2nd, Congress voted unanimously for the Declaration! Two days later, John Hancock and 56 others signed, knowing their signature was an act of treason.

FACT: P hiladelphia printer John Dunlap reproduced hundreds of copies to dispatch across the 13 colonies. In 1989, an original “Dunlap broadside,” discovered hidden in a $4 frame and purchased at a flea market, sold at an auction for $8.1 million.

JULY 19th, 1848 In Seneca Falls, New York, women activists called for a “Women’s Rights Convention” led by a young mother named Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Her Declaration of Sentiments began with, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal.” At a public forum of 300 people, including Frederick Douglass, Stanton and a friend, Lucretia Mott, demanded equality of financial and educational opportunities, equal marriage and property rights, social and cultural norms, and all rights and privileges of United States citizens. The demonstration introduced a meeting and life-long friendship between Stanton and Massachusetts teacher Susan B. Anthony. After the Civil War, they pushed lawmakers to guarantee women’s rights.

FACT: D espite not being eligible to vote in 1866, Stanton was the first woman to run for a Congressional seat. She received 24 of 12,000 votes.

JULY 4th, 1876 Giving up was not Susan B. Anthony’s style. It mattered not that she was barred from speaking at the centennial 4th of July celebration at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. With the help of friends, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, copies of the speech were passed to attendees outside the building.

A crowd arrived to hear the impassioned words to impeach all government officials who did not acknowledge the promises of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and to women. Anthony believed that until women had a right to vote, contributing to elect dutiful lawmakers, society wouldn’t take a woman in politics seriously!

FACT: Seventy-two years later, in 1920, the Declaration of Sentiments achieved a goal. Congress passed the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote.

JULY 2nd, 1964 After landmark cases and non-violent demonstrations, from support of eliminating segregation in schools to the Montgomery bus boycott and the actions of Rosa Parks, to the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., a significant moment became a law. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, prohibiting discrimination based on race and allowing the government to cut funding where it had occurred.

FACT: The Civil Rights Act provided equal protection through the laws of citizenship and protection of voting rights under the 14th and 15th Amendments.

JULY 16th, 1969 Color televisions became popular in the mid-1960s. It was a benefit if your family had one by July of 1969. Over 550 million people worldwide tuned in to watch Apollo 11’s moon launch. Four days later, Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon’s surface. With two 16mm motion picture film cameras, one color, and a black-and-white television camera attached to the external module, the world witnessed approximately two and a half hours of live coverage and audio.

FACT: Buzz Aldrin and Armstrong spent the day walking on the surface, while Michael Collins, the third pilot, remained in a module, orbiting the moon.

Understanding Reflexology

As pressure is applied to a particular reflex or zone, the associated nerve will send signals to a specific organ, limb, gland, or system. While it may sound similar to massage, a reflexologist engages in stimulating your body’s natural healing power to repair itself.

After walking on various surfaces, even though our shoes are well padded, it’s often satisfying to sit, elevate the legs, and relax. The simple act of elevating a foot and applying pressure on different acupoints can return the body to optimal health, or even cure disease. For thousands of years, the practice of reflexology has facilitated energy flow in 15 points on the foot, while eight alleviated pain.

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?

As people choose an alternative for prescription medications, a holistic option can prevent, manage, and treat ailments. The solution is a zone therapy, termed reflexology.

The foot is a road map, divided into five longitudinal and transverse zones on each side of your body. It begins at the tip of each toe and runs up to the top of your head. A transverse zone, similar to a line of latitude, corresponds to areas of your head, neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis.

REDUCE STRESS & MENSTRUAL PAIN: On the top side of your foot, place your thumb between the big and second toe, where the tendons meet. Apply deep and firm pressure for five seconds.

HOT FLASHES & NIGHT SWEATS: Find the fleshy point directly below the second toe, aptly named Bubbling Springs Point. Firm pressure aids symptoms associated with perimenopause by calming anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia.

ELIMINATE HEADACHES & DIZZINESS: Pressure right below the big toe joint and second toe (point KD 1) will open

the sensory orifices to aid blurry vision, ringing ears, sore throat, and headaches.

Continue the massage for two minutes on each foot.

BODY IMBALANCE: The bony bump on the outside of the ankle identifies the pressure point. Applying pressure can help any feeling of imbalance on the left and right sides of the body, feelings of dizziness, headaches, swelling, or pain in the legs.

STABILIZES MOOD: Direct the thumb an inch below the bony bump on the outside of the ankle. Use massage on this point to reduce mental stress.

STOMACH ACHES & DIZZINESS: Below the inside nail of the big toe is the pressure point. Hold firmly for five seconds on each foot.

GASTRIC ISSUES: In helping to relieve the body from constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, and sluggishness, use the acupressure point found by pressing on the inner foot at the depression area (beginning of the curve) down from the big toe. Start for three minutes. As hunger pains arrive, increase the time.

RESPIRATORY DIFFICULTIES: Feel between the Achilles tendon and the bony bump on the ankle. Pressure here helps alleviate numerous symptoms, from relieving toothache and sore throat to breathing issues, such as bronchitis and asthma.

EASE LABOR PAINS: With a thumb and index finger, firmly pinch the outer edge of the pinky toe, where the nail bed starts. Women have found that this eased the pain during the first stage of labor.

Tip: For self-therapy in reducing labor pain, apply gentle pressure on the webbed skin between the thumb and pointer finger, directly below the knuckle. Massage for a minute, wait; then, repeat.

Since reflexology is an ancient practice, its origin and history are difficult to track; however, a pictograph with hieroglyphics etched on papyrus, estimated from the year 2330 BC, illustrates the value of hand and foot reflexology. With the later arrival of detailed charts of the feet and hands, holistic therapy continues to restore the body.

of the side-effects of the pandemic was a demand in construction. As people stayed home more, home projects flourished. To give you some perspective—Home Depot’s 2020 growth was 19.9% over 2019. Ask anyone in the home improvement business—lumber costs are up. Supplies are scarce because of overseas manufacturing and delivery. And many products, including cabinetry and furniture, are on months-long waiting lists.

Let’s put a pin there and go to Isaiah 43:16, 18-19. These verses say, “Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea and a path through the mighty waters, ‘Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.’”

and traditional construction tools, He utilizes His Word to change us and make us new (Romans 12:2). In fact, the only time He ever used nails was His ultimate restoration project—when He allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross to pay the price for our sins (Romans 5:8).

Here’s the problem: We sometimes miss all the improvements Jesus has made in our lives because we’re still focused on the past.

Instead of seeing His incredible renovations and the way He’s changed us, we’re still focused on the rundown shacks we used to be.

But, here’s the truth: It’s not about what I’ve done in the past. It’s about what He did on the cross. It’s about what He’s doing in my present and what He’s promised for my future.

The enemy wants us to see the old, and never focus on the new. My past, by the world’s standards, isn’t that horrible. But we are the ones who weigh sin. To God, sin is sin is sin is sin. He is holy, and everything from the white lie to the mass genocide is offensive to Him (Romans 3:23). So it doesn’t matter that the world says that my past isn’t so bad—I know I’ve wholly offended God, and even though I’ve repented and I know I’m forgiven, I still hold onto my share of regrets. We all do, right? Don’t you wish we could forgive ourselves as easily and readily as Jesus forgives us?

It’s not about my mistakes or your mistakes.

It’s not about our shortcomings and failures.

As soon as we repent, all of that sin was hauled out in spiritual dump trucks and cast in a landfill that’s as far as the East is from the West (Psalm 103:12).

And then I was reminded: It’s no coincidence that Jesus was a carpenter.

If past choices haunt you, remember that the construction project is still in progress.

He makes all things new (Revelation 21:5).

We may feel like we’ve just dented the hope Jesus installed in our lives when He’s perfectly capable of fixing it and restoring our hope in Him (1 Peter 1:3). When we read His Word, making it the foundation for our choices, and when we spend time with Him in prayer—He keeps restoring us. He keeps transforming us. And His work can be seen through us.

Let’s pull out that pin from earlier. Jesus is in the remodeling business. He can take down the walls of pride, shame, and hurt in our lives as easily as He can tear out the wornout mess we’ve made with sinful choices. He can make it all new. There is no inventory shortage of His grace (John 1:16) and forgiveness is never backordered (1 John 1:9). And while He doesn’t wield a hammer

MINUTE for your Minister Love is an Action Verb

Have you ever said, “I love my church or I love my pastor after you heard a great sermon?” If you have that’s great, and we are thankful you feel that way; but what have to ever done to let your pastor know that’s how you feel? We’ve all heard the expression, “actions speak louder than words.”

Well this year, Energize Ministries is promoting 2021 as the LOVE YOUR PASTOR year.

Remember when Jesus asked Peter if he loved him? Peter responded each time that he did love Jesus, but each time Jesus gave him a command or action He wanted him to do- “feed my sheep.”

One lesson we can learn from this is that “Love” is a action verb. Love needs to be more than just words we say, it needs to be lived out in our actions.

How can our family show love to your pastor? So glad you asked. The list is endless, but here are a few ideas to get you started. Bring them a meal, mow their grass, babysit their kids so they can have a date night, detail their car, make a list of all the things your family loves about your church and post it online or give it to your pastor. Care for your pastor’s spouse with a spa gift card, or treat the kids to ice cream and putt-putt for no reason. Don’t forget that loving on your pastor’s family is a great way to love your pastor too.

Praying for you pastor is always high on the list but these other actions will encourage, uplift, and make your pastor’s day and probably their week.

Don’t wait until October and Pastor appreciation month. Start today to make love an action word in your church.

Greed, the Infection of the Heart

It

happened a couple years ago. I was driving along heading to meet someone at Starbuck’s and got caught by the red light at an intersection. I was just about to hit the gas and pull out in front of a slow mover when she caught my eye.

She was standing on the side of the road with an oversized cardboard sign. Scrawled in child-like handwriting were only two words. “Please Help.” She looked like she was in her sixties but life had not been kind…so she might have 30. Long blonde stringy hair falling down to her waist. Her face weathered and cracked. I quickly glanced around my car looking for the homeless bags we occasionally make at my church. I spotted a French Fry at least a month old, a wrapper from Wendy’s stained with ketchup, but no bag. Now let me be completely honest here. Normally I would have just hit the gas and moved on mentally and literally. But there is a peril of being a preacher.

Even if no one else listens to your sermons, you do. For the simple reason you have spent hours living with the Scripture.

I made the “mistake” of preaching on giving to the poor just that Sunday before. I essentially said that if we are going to follow Jesus, caring for the poor is not an option. It’s not like the “you pick two” at Panera. “Yes, I will have the ‘Jesus and His Redemption,’” but “Please hold off on the ‘Giving to the Needy’ bit.” I digress. All that to say I simply couldn’t just drive off without being a complete hypocrite. I looked around in the console and only spotted a few pennies. They looked corrosive.

So unless she took Mastercard there was little I could do. Sure I had my wallet, but at the time I had two teenage girls. So do you really think I had actual cash? Except I did that day. A tendollar bill. Not sure how it escaped my family’s attention. I was thrilled that I actually had some real green in my pocket besides

the lint. So in a span of 12 seconds I had to make a decision.

I so badly didn’t want to part with Alexander Hamilton. I knew I wouldn’t see him or any of his friends again anytime soon. I was shocked that I felt this way. It struck me that my heart was growing callous. So I gave Mr. Hamilton away.

As much to help to detox my soul as to help that desperate woman. I wanted to rid myself of an “infection” that had begun taking root.

COVID is not the only disease that you and I are dealing with in our world today. There is another that is in a way more nefarious. And Jesus wants to eradicate it from our lives. Jesus makes this clear in Mark 10:21 with the “well resourced” young ruler. Honestly, I think the young man was looking more for a “that-a-boy” rather than a theological treatise on soteriology (study of salvation), when he asked a question. Jesus surprised him when he gave him neither. Instead he told him to give his wealth away. Why? I believe because Jesus knew that the 20-something was fighting an infection. A disease of the heart.

The infection was greed and the only way he could “inoculate” himself from it was radical generosity. Sadly enough, that was the one thing the young man was not willing to do.

In truth, we are all like that young man. Every day we have to make a decision. Are we going to allow the contagion of greed to consume us? Or are we going to fight the contamination by being open-handed? COVID may be the pandemic of our time, but greed is the plague of humanity. They both bring death; the first can kill the body, but the second can and will destroy the soul.

CONFESSIONS of a Former Single Mom

taking them to sports events…they even slept in my bed, until they got so big they had to move to their own beds. But I treasure those days and wouldn’t have had it any other way.

After a ten-year (not so happy) marriage, I found myself divorced with one- and three-year-old little boys. Their father trickled out of their lives slowly and then completely…which was for the best. I have no complaints, but 24/7 responsibility wasn’t always easy. The kids and I adapted pretty well to being a family of three and with the kids at those ages, my only downtime was when they were asleep!

You are stronger than you think You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option.

Single moms don’t have the option of falling apart! You learn what you’re made of when you have other small humans depending on you. You rally when you’re sick, you smile when you feel like crying and you get moving when you’re so tired you could sleep for a month. You learn that you are much more capable than you ever gave yourself credit for.

You also learn patience, resilience, selfsacrifice and what really matters in life.

In a single parent’s world there is no time to sweat the small stuff, deal with unnecessary drama, or spend time with people who drain your crucial resources.

brave souls set out with the clear intention of being a single mom, but not many. In my case, I didn’t choose the single mom life…the single mom life chose me!

Flash forward…I am 11+ years past those early days of single mamahood. I’ve been married to a great second husband for several years and the chaotic days of raising kids by myself seem further away all the time. Sometimes I long for those crazy days and my wild little boys.

I certainly did learn from them. Being a single mother, though unbelievably hard, has its true blessings and its lessons. I wouldn’t trade those for anything.

The bond with your children is strong and resilient When you’re a solo parent, your kids rely on you for everything. The bond that’s built between you and the children you spend all your free time with feels unbreakable. I was the one feeding them, bathing them, shopping with them, comforting them, playing with them,

You feel like you’re failing, but when you look at your kids…you see they are thriving With finances a constant worry, stress is a constant companion. It’s hard to see how everything can get accomplished by one person. Even worse, guilt is also a major issue. You wonder how you alone can give your kids the life they deserve.

Even so, when I would step back and look at the bigger picture, I would see mostly happy kids, thriving kids, kids who seemed to be getting the love and attention they needed. They were

growing into incredible people before my very eyes.

Support systems are critical There are many things two-parent families take for granted. Tag-teaming kids in a parking lot or anywhere dangerous , providing relief when your partner is about to drop, taking care of each other so you can live to fight another day…these things are just a beautiful fantasy to a single parent.

Having an established support system is vital. For me, this was mainly my parents.

Parents who would drop everything and come to my rescue if a kid got sick and I couldn’t miss work. A father who knew when I was struggling to make ends meet and would pick up the slack without me ever having to ask. Support showed up in unexpected ways, too, such as from a neighbor who raked my leaves, friends who helped unpack after one of our many moves, and from a family with a boy my son’s age who invited my son over to play and fed him dinner at least a few times a week.

People showed up for us and only now, many years later…can I truly appreciate what blessings those people were!

Things I wish I could go back and tell myself It will all turn out okay! You don’t need to worry so much. Focus on these precious moments and enjoy your children… because what they say is true. The days can be slow (sometimes agonizingly so), but the years, they fly by!

In Search of Waterfalls

on the floor of a bookstore with our heads tilted right, my sister and I perused titles on North Carolina’s history, hoping to find adventure! As if the book screamed, “Take me,” I reached for North Carolina’s Waterfalls, a Hiking and Photography Guide by Kevin Adams. As the title suggests, the book offered a detailed description of each waterfall, providing information about accessibility, level of difficulty, distance, beauty rating, and a listing of nearby waterfalls. With the destination clear, we decided to go to the “land of waterfalls,” Brevard County, which surrounds two national forests, two state parks, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. One day in 1998, we packed snacks, a case of water, our guide book, camera, film, and an overnight bag in a Toyota Tercel.

Have Faith Life before navigational devices enforced a different type of relationship. Rand McNally, the battered atlas, has taken us there and back again several times. It requires a visual faith to follow the road with a finger and pinpoint the destination.

Finding a waterfall needs a similar blind trust. Not all pathways have large and clear signs with labels and arrows.

Sometimes, it takes pulling off to the side of the road, rolling down a window, and listening. Following the increasing sounds of rushing water may be the only beacon leading you forward!

Striking Down Subdividing Land Within Transylvania County, a war for land began when a manufacturing company sold its facility and surrounding property.

Across years and new owners, in order to foster land development to improve roads and construct a covered bridge, a grass-roots group called “Friends of the Falls” and the Governor of North Carolina invoked eminent domain. The land, comprising 2,700 acres, and named “DuPont State Forest,” became a popular attraction due to its 100 designated trails and six waterfalls. Despite its classification as a state forest, Dupont has an opportunity for every visitor, especially those seeking lower temperatures and drops of cascading water.

Perhaps the next adventure will lead sisters, a couple, or family to Lake Toxaway, Grandfather Mountain, The Highlands, or Shining Rock, which have high visitor numbers. Not just as a weekend getaway, but tracking falls,

learning the state’s history, and bonding with loved ones can become more than a way of life.

Rather than remaining on the bookshelf, calling “pick me” again, it will remain in my vehicle for those spontaneous moments when we decide to pack a few items and hit the road traveling west. Summer or fall, absorbing the cooler temperatures in higher altitude under a canopy of trees, the forest lacks the sounds of human voices. The journey awaits you! Buy a guide book and consider taking a wellneeded adventure with Kevin Adams and Rand McNally leading the way! The lack of technology will be a blessing where the road ends and foot travel begins!

Out & About Lewisville with The Tour of Lewisville in

community members – there have been many limitations over the past 15 months placed upon us. The Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce wasn’t sure what the shape of their bike event, the Tour of Lewisville (TOL), would be as the planning began. They held virtual meetings with the exception of the last as restrictions were being lifted. Initially prepared for a staggered start, riders were pleasantly surprised to kick begin together, all while being encouraged, along with staff and volunteers, to “Know your W’s” (wear a mask, wait six feet apart, and wash your hands).

Tour of Lewisville started as simply an idea that came from Meika Imes, Community & Member Relations Manager for the chamber. She contacted her friend Garry Steele, who launched the Tour of Farmington bike event in 2009 in Davie County. Learning how that event operated, the brainstorming began, and Imes thought a bike event would be perfect in Lewisville. Imes says, “The town is beautiful and already full of enthusiastic riders.”

They presented the idea to the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce Board and Lewisville Mayor Mike Horn. Everyone was excited to see this event take place.

On May 22nd, the first Tour of Lewisville was underway, with many excited bike riders as well as supporters, staff, and volunteers. Cyclists chose either a 15-mike, 30-mile, or 60-mile route. The adventure took them through beautiful terrain and around the town with spectacular hilltop and waterfront views. Participants received lunch, t-shirts, and swag bags. “To say this event was a success would be an understatement!” said Ditra Miller, CEO of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce. “The sea of riders cycling through the starting archway at Shallowford Square was a sight to behold. It gave me butterflies to see hundreds of people come together in this way – happy, energized, and supportive.”

The planning committee consisted of members of the chamber and others in the business community, including Meika Imes, Mike Campbell, Mike Cadiente, Donna Ivey, Jennifer Hill, Tamika Wells, Sheila Gonzalez, Travis Beane, and Garry Steele. TRU Taekwondo Center staff and families, Kristin Johnson with the Historic Broyhill, and others volunteered on event day to set up rest stops, help with registration, serve lunch, and clean up the square.

Their hard work, coupled with the support of the sponsors, made this event possible. Platinum sponsors for the event were the Clemmons Bicycle, Forsyth Magazines, East Coast Wings & Grill Clemmons, Busted Barrel Cocktail Bar at Old Nick Williams Company Farm and Distillery, WinstonSalem Christian School, Parrish Tire & Automotive. of a Southern Yankee

Until

the age of about 7, I had never really known the meaning of “work.” I lived with my grandparents in upstate New York for the first six years of my life.

There, I remember my grandfather mowing his yard and tending to a small garden in the summer. I can also recall him (as I stood looking out the picture window of the cozy living room) shoveling FEET of snow in the frigid upstate winters. In 1979, I moved to Virginia for a period of about eight months to live with my parents in a small apartment. I didn’t have any chores there; instead I dealt with navigating a life with two people who were unfit to be parents. After being adopted in March of 1980, my life was transformed in a myriad of ways. One of those ways was me learning the value of work.

A year or two before I came into their picture, my adopted parents had purchased almost 50 acres of land in the western part of Augusta County, Virginia, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The land had been badly neglected, but had incredible potential (I think my parents had a gift for seeing the potential in the neglected). The property consisted of rolling hills, two ponds, wooded areas with majestic oaks, and was literally a young boy’s dream playground. But before it could become the gem that it is today, there was a lot of work to be done.

Shortly after my adoption, my new father, who worked in Washington, DC as an ironworker, would come home on weekends. Most Saturdays, he and

I would make the 20- to 25-minute drive to the property. Windows down, sun shining, I can still hear him singing “Going up the Country” by Canned Heat. I also remember him letting me sit on his lap to steer for the last mile or so (these were very backcountry roads, so there was no danger). The property, as I mentioned earlier, needed a great deal of TLC. There were huge areas of prickly wild rose bushes, thorny blackberry bushes and brambles, and thousands of a plant that would become my ultimate nemesis—the thistle. Now, according to my (new) old man, this was not something you wanted to see in your fields. It was a sign of neglect, and laziness, a lack of pride, and...I think you get the picture. In other words, thistles were bad and they must be eradicated! So, how do we do that? My father reached into the back of the International Scout and pulled out a rather rudimentary tool called a hoe. I was about to learn how to destroy thistles. My excitement was short-lived when I found out how it was done. Every thistle had to be completely dug up, root and all and left to die in the sun. Now, if you’ve never had personal experience with thistles, there are a couple things to know. From a distance, they are quite a pretty plant (weed, actually). Each plant consists of a dark green stalk that can grow two to three feet tall.

When in bloom, the flowers are fluffy and dark pink in color (those flowers turn into seeds, as with dandelions).

Harmless, right? Wrong. Up close, upon further inspection, the thistle has sharp pointy leaves and is entirely covered with tiny needle-like

nettles. In other words, it’s a demonic plant. Accidentally brushing up against one will almost always lead to some sort of expletive-filled rant.

Like some young Greek hero, sword in hand or, in my case, an old hoe, I set off to slay as many of these demon weeds as possible. With the warm sun overhead, I began the daunting task of ridding the property of these horrible invaders. One by one, I attacked them, bringing the hoe down into the dirt over and over again.

I was digging up thistles. One by one, I would watch them fall over. If I couldn’t see the root attached, I dug down further. Thistle after thistle after thistle. Every now and then, the back of my hand or wrist would come into contact with the weed, sending a burning sensation through my nervous system to my brain.

My hands began to turn red. My arms were sore. I stopped and looked around. I hadn’t made quite the dent I thought I had. Actually, I felt like I was getting nowhere. Hundreds, no, make that thousands, of thistles still stood all around me. I knew they were laughing at me with that evil thistle laugh. What seemed like hours later (it probably wasn’t that long), my father walked over, told me that was good enough for the day, and praised me for my work. He looked at my hands. For the first time in my life, I had blisters. He assured me from his own experiences that the blisters would turn into things called

calluses. And I knew what he meant from the times my small hands had been in his rough, strong hands.

With time, my hands did become tough (never as tough as his) and the work became easier. Weekend after weekend we repeated our trips out to the property. Over many years and with countless hours of labor, the thistles, rosebushes, blackberry bushes, and brambles that once covered the landscape disappeared. I often think back to those days of going from one thistle to another, like a bee flitting from flower to flower. I think about life and the sometimes painful thistles that can arise. Those thistles can easily multiply and spread, if we allow them to. Thistles that cause heartache, pain, strife, and suffering. But with hard work, determination, and the support of loved ones, we can tackle those thistles one by one.

It can be a long, arduous process that will leave you exhausted at times. But when that final thistle falls over, you can step back and look at what you’ve overcome. And it makes it that much easier when inevitably, future thistles pop up.

Forty years later, my parents are living on that same property where I slayed all those Dragons…I mean thistles. I try to visit them at least once a month. As I make my way up the gravel driveway, I smile as I admire the beauty of the fields—the lush green grass blowing gently in the breeze. I smile knowing it was my hard work that helped to contribute to this majestic landscape. I smile as I think about all those thistles that had once taken over, and now? Now there isn’t a single d@$n one of those things in sight!

I Loved You First

I kept the shirt I wore the day we met. I was much smaller then, my prebaby body not quite holding the same curves it does now. To this day I still find it funny how we never met, yet I had known your dad for ten years. It was almost as if we were meant to be.

Who am I kidding, we are.

I love to open the closet and see the purple tank top hanging there, a remembrance of simpler times, when we were carefree and falling in love. Most of the clothes I wear now have the word “mama” on them or are much more forgiving, representing a new stage in our life together.

All my heels have been donated and replaced with sneakers or sandals, something easier to chase a toddler around in.

We used to stay up late talking on the phone, getting to know each other and doing silly things via Facetime, like folding clothes and cooking dinner. We didn’t care as long as we were together, making our relationship work long distance as much as we could over the phone.

We would steal weekends away together, relishing in the time we had.

Now, we do these things as if they were second nature, passing off shirts to put in drawers and testing spaghetti sauce to make sure it’s seasoned enough.

Oh, and the dates. The nice dinners, walking hand and hand through the mall to get milkshakes. I remember those nights and how easy it was to just pick up and go. When we go out now it’s much more of a production, resulting in hours of prep time, and not on my hair and makeup. It’s all on making sure the baby has everything he might possibly need in case he decides he’s had enough, because trust me, he will have had enough, promptly ending whatever we had planned for the night.

Our son. As long as the sleepless nights are, and as tired as we are from chasing him around, he is our greatest blessing. I’ll never forget the day I knew my love would be second best. When we heard his cry and saw his little hands wrapped around yours, I saw something shift in your eyes. It was like everything aligned, and in that moment, you knew all your life this was what you were made to do—be a dad.

Or to hear his sweet giggle when you do something silly, when of course, I’m trying to be serious, because you always know how to make everyone laugh, even when it’s the worst time.

I’ve realized something throughout falling in love with my husband. Loving your spouse isn’t linear. It changes over time, zig zags and weaves, becoming something different than in those first days. It’s saying goodbye to purple tank tops and milkshakes, and replacing them with baby tickle fights, reruns of Sesame Street, and date nights at home on the couch with Chinese take-out and a really bad Netflix movie. It’s about watching them fall in love with a miniature version of the most perfect person you created together, and knowing that all the love you have for each other will always be walking around on this Earth.

At the end of the day, I don’t know what the future holds for my family, and whether our son will be our only, but what I do know is I look forward to each day with my husband and watching him fall more and more in love with our son. I thank my lucky stars for that purple tank top and will always appreciate the humbling reminder of when we fell in love.

How I Use Scheduling-Blocks to Organize My Day

all have days where it seems we have too much to do and not enough time. These days can be hectic, overwhelming, and cause unnecessary stress. Often, we can be left feeling as if we haven’t accomplished much when the day is over.

Scheduling out your day and trying to fit in all your tasks and errands can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be.

One strategy I have found to work is the concept of scheduling-blocks. In this time management strategy, you’re dedicating yourself to completing a task or tasks within a certain timeframe. Time-blocking is the main scheduling-block strategy that many people use. From there, it can be broken down into more specific concepts, such as day-theming and task-batching. All are similar in theory, but do have important differences. These variations on scheduling-blocks help make this time strategy manageable and useable for any type of lifestyle.

TIME-BLOCKING – In this concept, you divide out the hours for your day into blocks. Then, each block is designated for a specific task or tasks. If you are choosing to complete more than one task in a block, it is best to keep the group-related tasks together and keep the list small. For example, you plan on completing errands and chores from 9 am to 4 pm. Within those hours, you may assign 9 am to 10 am for cleaning the kitchen, 12 pm to 2 pm for running errands, and then 3 pm to 4 pm for doing laundry.

Day-Theming – This variation on scheduling-blocks includes setting aside whole days for tasks or responsibilities. For example, Monday may be laundry day, Tuesday meal-planning day, Wednesday writing day, and Sunday family day. Day-theming can come in handy specifically with your work on long-term projects/tasks. One of the benefits of this variation is that you are scheduling your work with a sense of pattern and don’t have to keep going back and forth between tasks multiple times in a week.

Task-Batching – Task-batching is similar to timeblocking in the sense that you group similar, smaller tasks together into a specific time block, with the intention to complete them all at the same time.

For example, you can knock out meal planning, looking for grocery store coupons, and creating your shopping list in the same two-hour block.

These tasks are all interconnected and reduce the amount of work and switching back and forth, due to their similarities. This approach works well with e-mail, errands, meal prep, and workouts. Instead of checking your inbox multiple times throughout the day, schedule two to three blocks of time to check and respond to your messages. Schedule one block for working out or running errands.

I have used all of these schedulingblock strategies at one time or another. The method I use is based upon what my tasks include or what I have going on within the day or week. I also have used a variety of methods within the same week.

Each day will have a theme, and then I will go deeper and divide my hours into blocks with tasks related to the day’s theme. While scheduling-blocks sounds like an easy thing to do, it can produce valuable benefits.

• Through scheduling-blocks, you gain a greater awareness of how you spend your time. Committing a timeframe for a task or a few gives you the chance to see how much time you actually do spend on a task and whether or not you over/underestimate that amount of time. You may be surprised to find extra time on a shorter task and decide you can move that time to larger tasks.

• It promotes focus and a clearer vision of your activities. We all try to multi-task due to a lack of time, thus making mistakes and creating more work.

• It helps you follow through with your goals. For me, seeing the distinct tasks I need to complete within a chunk of time keeps me motivated and committed to getting them completed. I am able to have a clear-cut view of what I need to do without feeling overwhelmed, or feeling I have to get everything done at once. Plus, there is a sense of accomplishment seeing how you spent your day.

Scheduling-blocks come in all forms.

The key thing is to find one that works best for you. Don’t be afraid to mix it up every now and then. Time management varies each day and can be hard to handle, but schedulingblocks are here to help make life a little more relaxed.

There are several thousands knots in existence and an infinite number of variations. Whether you are a beginner or expert, everyone can find a purpose in the art of knot tying!

Instructions: Lap one rope right over left, then underneath the other, and tie again in the reverse direction—left over right and then underneath. The result is that the working and standing end are side-by-side.

A VOCABULARY LESSON Becoming familiar with ropemaking vocabulary helps a learner read, process, and understand procedures with ease.

Instructions: Form a loop, termed a rabbit hole, take the long working end up through the hole, around the object, and back down.

As the knot slips, it will tighten.

• The working end is the end of the rope that you will use to wrap, tie, or create the knot.

TRUCKER’S HITCH is applicable for heavy objects or loads requiring a need for a tiedown or hitch.

• A knot is a fastening made by intertwining one or more ropes with some form of flexible material. After tightening, the knot will hold a substantial amount of weight, such as a bucket of water.

• A hitch includes another object, such as another rope or ring, post, or stick, which will hold an object in place or slide.

• A lashing involves a rope to secure two or more objects together, such as creating a ladder using rope and wood pieces or tying two sticks together to make a cross.

• A bight is a curved section or slack part between the two ends of a rope.

CLOVE HITCH: A powerful, strong knot that can secure a line to a tree or post quickly.

Instructions: Make a loop around a pole to form an “x.” Then, take the rope under the rod and up through the second loop. To increase the strength, consider the “Round Turn and Two Half Hitches” by starting with two loops around the pole; instead of just one.

Sometimes, it’s a truth said in the heat of an argument about nothing—”You’re on the computer all the time.”

Sometimes, it is a heart-crushing proclamation made by a five-year-old who’s been denied screen time—“I don’t want to read a book! Books are boring! I HATE BOOKS. I WANT TO PLAY WII.” I hate books. The words brought tears to my eyes. How could my child hate books? How could my child prefer to spend her time watching SpongeBob or playing video games or browsing the app store or anything, anything, but reading a book?

The answer is simple. Me.

overwhelmed parent. Maybe a smug parent, assuming that their natural inclination for awesomeness will compensate for any deficit in my parenting. I am, I think, by any standard a good enough parent.

I don’t want to be a good enough parent. I want to be a good parent. I should strive every day to be a GREAT parent. When we decided to have children, everything in my life became suddenly secondary. I am responsible for the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of three very small people. It is my job, my chosen profession, to dedicate my life to helping them become good and kind and productive and generous and loving people. Some people wonder what their purpose in life is. I don’t—that’s it.

Those three people are my purpose in life.

I wake in the morning, stumble into the kitchen, and check my e-mail. Messages from Target and Groupon take precedence over coffee, even. I fix breakfast and turn my back to my children while they eat, so I can check Facebook.

I keep the iPad on the counter, so I can check in here and there dozens of times a day as I pass through the room.

At nap time, I balance it on my knee while I rock Henry to sleep.

It’s my responsibility to do this job the best that I can.

Henry is barely awake and starts asking, “Play game?” Julia can work every electronic device in this house better than I can. And she was the source of the “I hate books” comment.

I do not read at bedtime anymore with any regularity, finding it easier to put a movie in her portable DVD player while I get Henry to sleep.

But it’s the way things are now! Everyone’s connected!

Everyone is linked in! Everyone has a blog! It’s what it is.

Katie, who did receive the benefit of thousands of pages read aloud to her, and has reading and writing skills far beyond her age and grade level, prefers the company of an iPod Touch to anything else.

I, my friends, have screwed up.

I am not a bad parent. I take my kids places and love them fiercely and have spontaneous dance parties and feed them good food and teach them right from wrong. I am afraid what I have become is a lazy parent. Maybe sometimes an

And I haven’t been. What I have done is helped create a trio of vidiots, so “connected” with things that we’re losing connections with each other. We lead by example: Sean and I, finally alone with all the kids in bed, sit in front of the television, simultaneously watching a show and surfing on our respective electronic devices.

I’m not going offline. We won’t throw out our televisions or computers or phones. I will still give in to laziness and exasperation and say, “…just watch a show for a little while to get dinner made or laundry folded or a few minutes of quiet. I am not perfect; I cannot be.” But good enough is not good enough anymore.

Today, no one played video games. As a result, none of us got the shakes or went insane, or burst into flames.

Instead, we sat on the floor and played Legos until my ass fell asleep. Tonight, I sat in the rocker and announced, “Storytime!” and didn’t hurry the story. Julia decided she doesn’t hate books, after all.

Tiny steps. Small victories. Glimpses of greatness.

Summertime and the Living is Easy

A

lot of people consider Memorial Day to be the start to summer. Officially, summer starts when the sun reaches its northernmost point from the equator. That date varies from June 20th, 21st, and 22nd. This year, summer came in on June 20th at 11:39 pm. However, if you ask any parent with school-age children, they will tell you that summer starts the minute school is out.

After titling this article, I began to wonder – IS the living easy in the summer? For many parents, the in-school school year was quite short. My niece and her husband mostly worked from home while their two sons had virtual learning that they oversaw. Now that their offices are opening back up to their employees, it is back to getting them up and ready to spend the day in some form of care, being it camp, grandparents, or friends. Unlike a school schedule, summer is working in other activities for the children to enjoy, but one that keeps parents on their toes.

If you are a grandparent that watches your grandchildren throughout the year, you understand how your days changed. No longer did you have your mornings and early afternoons free to schedule appointments, run errands, or get together with friends. You only had a couple of months of the children being in school, when, BAM – summer vacation – and your free time wasn’t free anymore.

Keeping children engaged is important to their intellectual, physical, and socialization wellbeing. That doesn’t mean they need to be going somewhere or doing something during every waking minute. We all need to decompress from time to time. However, it is nice to have options of things to do while the grandchildren are in your care.

North Carolina has so many wonderful places that not only provide entertainment, but are a good learning experience as well. Winston-Salem is home to Kaleideum Downtown (formerly Children’s Museum of W-S). There are many interactive exhibits and hands-on activities that will send your grandchildren’s minds soaring. They also offer day camps available through August for ages three through rising seventh graders.

Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks) is another interactive, hands-on museum. This center will keep your grandchildren entertained for hours with their multitude of fascinating exhibits. They will also meet and learn about a number of live animals. There is an environmental park with winding trails, a play and picnic area, and a children’s garden to dig into, while surrounded by plants native to North Carolina. They also offer summer day camps.

Want to get away? The beautiful North Carolina Zoo is a mere hour from Winston-Salem in Asheboro. My grandchildren love going there, and we usually make a day of it. Bring your lunch or opt to buy lunch at one of several places in the park. There are a number of picnic tables to sit at and enjoy your meal. It’s also a nice break after hiking around the many walking trails to view the different habitats in the North America and Africa areas. At this writing, the zoo is open only with a reservation, so make sure to plan ahead.

Going in the other direction, head to the beautiful, and a nice way to beat the summer heat, mountains. While the Biltmore house in Asheville won’t excite your very young grandchildren, the older ones will be fascinated with the opulence and grandeur of this historic place. Having first visited as a young child, I fell in love with the library, and it’s still my favorite room.

Whether you stay in your hometown or choose to venture out, you will find there are a number of interesting, entertaining, and educational experiences to be had. Local parks, swimming pools, lakes, hiking trails, playing board games, working puzzles, baking, painting, or just running through the sprinkler in the backyard will be a nice break from screen time. Whatever you choose to do or wherever you go, make sure to plan ahead. If away from home, pack sunscreen, have water available, and include some snacks because children are always hungry! Most of all, have fun and take pictures!

heat got you feeling sour? The popular sport of pickleball can pull you out of your slump. Being the fastest growing sport in the country, pickleball is sure to get you moving, laughing, and connected to local players of all ages.

Pickleball enthusiast Gary Hellmann began playing the sport around five years ago. While running laps around the indoor track at the Jerry Long YMCA in Clemmons, he was able to watch pickleball being played on the basketball courts below.

After his neighbor invited him to join, Gary immediately realized that he had stumbled upon a fun and challenging new hobby, and quickly became hooked. Currently, Gary plays around three to four times per week for an average of two to three hours at a time. His wife Debbie has also fallen in love with the sport, making the Hellmann duo a force to be reckoned with.

Why has pickleball taken society by storm? Perhaps it’s because the sport encompasses the best aspects of classic sports such as tennis, badminton, and table-tennis without many of the headaches that accompany them. Tennis players train for years on end, sometimes to no avail, as the skill level needed to master such a sport requires ample time, talent, and physical exertion. In addition to the frustration coinciding with honing one’s tennis skills, private lessons, clothing, and equipment can be costly.

Pickleball, on the other hand, is a sport that most can pick up on fairly quickly without breaking the bank. Because the sport carries a lighthearted reputation (it is named “pickleball,” after all), players can more easily enjoy themselves and form bonds without the interference of high stress and hefty financial investment. Given that pickleball courts are smaller in perimeter than standard tennis courts, senior players often find solace in having less ground to cover—although a good hustle is still necessary. Additionally, pickleball can be quite fast-paced and fun to watch, as volleying (or hitting the ball out of the air) occurs much more frequently than it occurs in most tennis singles matches. While the volleying can be thrilling to watch, the pickleball itself is much larger than a standard tabletennis ball, making the ball slightly slower and easier to spot.

As a former tennis player, Gary initially assumed that pickleball would be a cakewalk for him. He soon realized that while

tennis and pickleball do overlap in many areas, the concept of the “no-volley zone,” commonly referred to as the “kitchen” by pickleball players, made the sport more challenging than he expected. In the kitchen, players are prohibited from volleying the ball, and are only allowed to enter the zone to return a ball that bounces within the zone. Because of this rule, professional pickleball players often find themselves in a game of “dinking,” or lightly hitting the ball back and forth within the kitchen, until someone inevitably errs.

Triad communities have caught on to pickleball’s popularity and have installed permanent pickleball courts in Greensboro and High Point, as well as in neighboring areas such as Statesville, Salisbury, and Wilkesboro. Makeshift courts can be created by striping tennis or basketball courts and utilizing portable nets for indoor or outdoor play. While the City of Winston-Salem boasts 109 tennis courts, it currently has no dedicated pickleball courts. Forsyth County pickleball players hope to see pickleball courts installed throughout the county sometime in the future, as the demand for pickleball is only increasing.

According to insiders like Gary, the local pickleball hot spot is Joanie Moser Park in Lewisville. For those interested in getting started with the sport, Gary suggests checking out the dozens of YouTube videos, or better yet, coming over to Joanie Moser Park most mornings and chatting with any of the players.

There’s also the TeamReach app for information on local pickleball schedules, calendars, and chat rooms. Don’t have the right pickleball gear? Fortunately, paddles are relatively low-cost and can be purchased at sporting goods stores throughout the area. If you don’t want to invest in equipment just yet, friendly players will likely allow you to borrow their equipment to try your hand at the sport.

Ezra Goldbach’s family and friends are honoring his life by having the 5th Annual Golf Tournament in his memory at Pilot Knob Park Country Club in Pilot Mountain.

We are excited to see everyone again this year and welcome anyone that hasn’t played before to join us!

Each year a scholarship will be awarded to an upcoming college student with a brilliant future and has played on their High School Golf Team. This year we feel so blessed and fortunate to award 4 scholarships. Congratulations to Emma R. Hutchens from East Surry HS, Isaac Riggs from North Surry HS, Emily N. Cox and Lukas Sikorski from West Stokes HS. In 2020 The Ezra Goldbach Foundation donated to Food Banks, donated to several needy families due to COVID-19 in Stokes County and adopted a local family for Christmas. Each year we hope to reach out and help a school or family in need.

Whether you are celebrating by the pool, with a picnic, or with the backyard barbecue, these cool red-white-and-bluethemed recipes will add festive flair the whole family will love.

STRAWBERRY LEMONADE

PATRIOTIC-FLAG-LAYERED TACO DIP

INGREDIENTS:

1 lb. Strawberries (the riper, the better) 1 cup granulated Sugar (superfine is best) 4 Lemons, juiced Cold Water (or use sparkling for fizz) Ice (optional) Strawberry and Lemon slices for garnish

1 (16 oz.) can Refried Beans 1 cup Sour Cream 1 (16 oz.) package pre-made Guacamole 2 Tbsp. Taco Seasoning 1 small jar Salsa, mild 3 Tbsp. Cilantro, fresh (optional) 1 large can Black Olives, sliced 4 slices Mozzarella Cheese 1 pint Cherry Tomatoes 1 (16 oz.) shredded Queso Cheese

1 ( 14 oz.) can sweetened condensed Milk 2 tsp. Vanilla extract 2 cups heavy whipping Cream (cold) 1 (8 oz.) Cream Cheese block, softened Strawberries & Blueberries

DIRECTIONS: 1. Remove tops of strawberries and cut in half. Place in blender with sugar and enough water added so that it blends more easily. Blend until smooth.

2. Juice the lemons.

3. Using a sieve, strain lemon and strawberry juice over a bowl. Use a spoon to press it down in the sieve.

4. Transfer the strawberry lemon pulp to a pitcher and add water to taste. Chill or serve over ice, garnishing with strawberry and lemon slices (optional).

DIRECTIONS: 1. Spread the refried beans on the bottom of a large casserole dish.

Sprinkle taco seasoning evenly on top.

2. Spread sour cream as an even layer, followed by the guacamole.

Sprinkle on cilantro (optional).

3. Create a “square” of olives in the top left corner, in what would be the blue part of the American flag.

4. Slice the cherry tomatoes in half and place in rows to create the red stripes of the American flag.

5. In the stripes between the tomatoes, sprinkle the shredded queso cheese to represent the white stripes of the flag.

6. Using a star cookie cutter or your knife skills, cut out star shapes for the mozzarella slices and place atop the black olives.

7. Refrigerate until serving. Serve with red and blue corn tortilla chips.

DIRECTIONS: 1. I n a medium bowl, beat cream cheese, condensed milk, and vanilla until smooth.

2. I n a separate bowl, beat heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form.

4. Top with berries. Pour into a loaf pan and freeze until firm, around 6 hours or overnight.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

Dictionary.com defines this as a “slang phrase that means being authentic and truthful, akin to ‘keeping it real.’”

Young people know the phrase well. I learned it only from The Ellen DeGeneres Show. So, I thought the title was only appropriate after realizing the milestone I reached with last month’s column. It just happened to be my 100th “The View from My Section” column for Forsyth Family. I’m very proud of this milestone, and I’ve tried to adhere to the principles of the quote in being “authentic and truthful” in my stories each month.

I started my column in 2013. My life was a little different then. My oldest son was just starting high school and my youngest son was beginning middle school. Two important milestones in their own right. As parents of older children know, these are two very different worlds.

In one world, they are trying to adjust to leaving you and developing their independence in thought, actions, goals, and intentions. In the other world, they still need you. They haven’t quite developed that rebellious side completely. And so, I wrote about life events, and my slant on it was based mainly on these two worlds.

As time passed, these worlds began to change. As my oldest looked ahead towards life after graduation, my youngest was just starting the journey into high school. It was an experience my wife and I shared for the first time. This period was hectic for sure, full of constant activities, things to do, decisions to be made, advice to be given, and all just trying to manage two very different life stages happening simultaneously in our children. And last fall, during the pandemic, yet another change when my youngest son started college and my oldest son was adjusting to life as an adult.

A lot has happened in eight years as a result of all those different life stages we each went through. And with each pivotal moment, I’ve tried to learn something from the experience and, whenever possible, teach my sons lessons that hopefully will help them in the future. Looking back and reflecting on the events since I started sharing my stories, opinions, and “the view from my section” (excuse the pun) or vantage point about them, I realized I had learned yet another important lesson in parenting.

I compare the parenting experience to being in a swimming pool. In the beginning, we’re in the deep end of the pool. I know this sounds like a contradiction, but bear with me on this.

We’re diving deep into our children’s lives, caring for them, teaching them, protecting them, and doing everything we can to make their lives happy and productive. We’re a part of their school activities, their homework, their after-school activities, sometimes their social lives with playdates, etc., their home life, discovering the world around them, and gently nurturing and guiding them to find their own way in the world, eventually.

And then one day, things begin to change. If we’re experienced, we recognize what it is, but if it’s our first time, it can be quite a difficult transition to navigate through. I’m referring to the time when they are reaching adulthood and they no longer need, nor do they desire, for us to take deep dives into their lives any longer.

It’s at this time that, as parents, we have to make our way over to the shallow end of the pool. It’s a relief for some, a challenge for others.

If you’ve been through it, you can easily recognize which end of the pool other parents are in. Those that can’t let go of their authority tend to have a more difficult experience. And those that understand their influence is limited now, and accept it, have an easier transition.

The interesting thing is that for those that have mastered the shallow end, it’s not that they’ve stopped caring as much, or, are there any less for their children when the children need them. On the contrary, it’s just a state of mind parents enter to allow their older children to live their lives and for the parents to not worry constantly about them. The irony is, that the day you become a parent, you no longer have the ability not to worry at least some of the time over them. The trick is to learn where the line is and try not to cross it any more than you need to.

Just another thing that eight years and 100 columns have taught me. I enjoy sharing my stories and view of life in our collective worlds, and I look forward to sharing many more with you.

those longing for an authentic taste of New York City, there’s good news – Mama Mia Italian Ice offers 50 flavors of Italian ice, featuring 24 at a time, New York bagels, pizza kits and so much more straight from New York!

Owners Nat and Kathy Oliveri left New York and their retail and operations management careers behind 12 years ago. They came to Clemmons for a more family friendly environment to raise their five children and were not disappointed.

Seeing the need in the area for New York-style fare like that found at “Lemon Ice King of Corona,” back home, owned by Nat’s cousin and famously featured in the opening credits of the popular television show, “King of Queens.” Nat and Kathy had the brilliant idea to bring a taste of New York to Forsyth County and formed Mama Mia NY Italian Ice in Clemmons. Nat makes frequent trips to New York for all of the handmade fresh Italian ice, handmade flash-frozen baked goods and other items.

The shop with several tables and a counter seating option is bright with lots of green, white and red – the colors of the Italian flag – and full of New York memorabilia. It’s a wonderful place to bring the family for Italian ice and take-home bagels and breads for later.

When asked their most popular Italian ice flavors, Kathy said, “Lemon is first. Everything else is second!” Besides the classic favorites – lemon, cherry, rainbow, chocolate – seasonal favorites pina colada, strawberry and cantaloupe are back for the summer. “These are also great to take home by the quart or pint and use to create adult beverages!” she noted. All of their Italian ice is made with natural fruit and is fat-free, gluten-free and dairy-free. They offer a couple of sugarfree flavors as well.

The menu has expanded to include New York favorites such as pizza kits, bagels, Italian loaf bread, Kaiser rolls, marinara, vodka pasta sauce, potato knishes, black and white cookies, and, now, hot pretzels – salted or with cinnamon sugar.

The Oliveris are warm and friendly and have a huge heart for the community. They donate all tips to the Clemmons Food Pantry, generating more than $3,000 in donations to date. They also support local school fundraisers, the Clemmons Fire Department and local swim team, to name a few.

Mama Mia NY Italian Ice recently moved their operations from Clemmons Road to a much larger space in a shopping center on Lewisville-Clemmons Road beside Starbucks with neighbors Clemmons Bicycle and English’s Bridal. “It has always been our goal to be located on Lewisville-Clemmons Road,” said Nat. The new location has attracted many new customers and boasts more seating, more parking, easier access and higher visibility. “It has been great for us.”
