I figure this is a great year to start, so my word is “restore!” 2021 will be a great year to restore a lot of things we hold dear! Restore hope and confidence that we will come out better than ever once Covid-19 is under control.

But their E-Learning opportunities were a game changer for so many students and their families.

I’m sure you get tired of seeing my photo above, so I’d like to take a moment to brag on my two grandcats, Lola and Nala. My daughters each adopted one the year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. They both provided so much joy to me during that time and continue to do so. A special thanks to my office assistant, Lola, who currently lives with me. She is a pretty amazing typist and I can’t beat her fee—a

WS/FCS’s Career Center Provides Students a Transitional

Since

1976, Career Center High School has been a vital part of the Winston-Salem education community. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools created this unprecedented complementary high school model, unlike any other in the area. It is a place where students can expand on their education by enrolling in a greater variety of advanced classes. Principal Nancy Martinez appreciates what Career Center has to offer to help students grow socially and academically. “Our school is a microcosm of the diversity that these students will experience in college and the workplace.

It allows the opportunity to learn to communicate and collaborate with others by interacting with students that are different than themselves.”

students; we give them the space to grow and mature. We inspire and motivate them when they need it and help them see what they are capable of accomplishing. It’s gratifying to watch them exceed their expectations and see how their time with us opens doors down the road.”

What is truly unique about Career Center is the opportunity it provides students to explore the freedom of adulthood, while still being in a safe, protected space that can support them. Students are treated like adults and have the chance to manage their classes with a new level of freedom. They are encouraged to define their learning style and fine-tune their skills to support themselves as they further their education and begin their careers. The expectations are high, and students rise to the occasion.

Jackson Owens ‘10: Career Center gives people the opportunity to experience a more diverse learning environment surrounded by students who are more passionate and invested in education or career advancement. I think it also provides a place for students to meet more like minded people than they typically would by just going to their district school.

Career Center primarily offers two types of classes: Advanced Placement (AP) and Career Technical Education (CTE) courses, in addition to several specialty courses that permit students to stay on track for graduation. There are 31 AP courses, 15 2-year CTE programs, and 15 specialty courses. This variety provides students the opportunity to begin a career or extend themselves academically. Students can design a schedule suiting their needs which may include any combination of these courses, for all or part of the school day. Classes are 50 minutes instead of the 90-minute blocks found in other schools, offering students daily reinforcement that many appreciate. The school system provides transportation for all students, and their state-of-the-art facility is centrally located for convenient access.

The staff at Career Center brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise into the classroom for their students. Most CTE faculty have real-world experience that they gained in their field before teaching. At least 11 AP faculty have been invited to grade AP exams, making them more knowledgeable about their courses and better able to train their students. The staff is one of the many reasons students consistently score higher on state & national exams. Sean Bennett, AP Biology Instructor and Science Department Chair, acknowledges the responsibility of teaching at Career Center, because he understands what the students gain from this experience. “We don’t just teach our

Amelia Rhodes is a sophomore at Appalachian State University. After attending Career Center in high school for her AP classes, she earned the Chancellor’s Scholarship, the most academically competitive scholarship at Appalachian, covering full institutional costs for up to 4 years. Amelia spoke favorably of her high school experience. “The Career Center is an experience I will always appreciate. It made a huge impact on my education. It is such a great and gentle way to immerse yourself in a more college-like environment, and exposes you to all sorts of different people. The teachers allow students to learn the material in an exciting and challenging way, while providing an example of how each of us should approach our jobs. Instead of looking at teaching as a career that is not as lucrative or appreciated as it should be, they give it their all and are absolutely fearless in how passionately they approach each and every topic. I have not seen this in another public school setting.”

Dylan Greenwood ‘05: The Career Center is invaluable. I went to college with people just as smart as me. We all had honors and prestige. However, my foundation was far and above any of my peers. Forsyth County is so lucky to have the Career Center. I just hope that my 6 month old gets to experience it when he is of age. The social connections, academic rigor, and personal skills from my three years at Career Center prepared me well to meet challenges inside and outside of the classroom. The extra commute and early mornings were certainly challenging as a teenager, but well worth the experiences gained at the time and at current.

Covid-19—Pandemic Plus Flu Season?

Tips on How to Stay Safe!

Every

year, countless adults and children contract “influenza,” also known as the “seasonal flu.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “during the 2019-2020 flu season, there were “39,000,000-56,000,000 reported illnesses, 410,000-740,000 hospital visits and sadly, 24,000-62,000 deaths.” With statistics as alarming as these, many are rightfully concerned about how they can avoid the flu, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The center reports that “the single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year,” however, it is vital to note that other healthy habits can help stop the spread of germs.

What exactly are these healthy habits that can possibly save one from either illness?

How can we prepare ourselves before we enter “flu season?” These are just two of the many questions that are possibly running through the minds of many as the days become shorter and colder. If you desire to learn how to avoid both deadly illnesses, read on for some manageable methods to helping you and your loved ones stay safe this season.

TIP #1: Know exactly when to prepare for battle! It is important for all to know when, exactly, “flu season” starts. According to the CDC, this season begins during the colder months and runs to Spring. While this may seem like a long and daunting length of time, it is important to note that the colder months (i.e., December—March) seem to be the months that cultivate more

cases. The peak month for flu activity seems to be February, followed closely

by December.

TIP #2: As always, avoid close contact with those who are sick. For both the flu and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial that you avoid close contact with anyone suffering from symptoms of either. This can be done by asking friends and family if they have had symptoms of either before visits, as well as yourself avoiding public places during these peak months.

TIP #3: Stay home, stay home, stay home.

It goes without saying that the safest way to avoid contact with those suffering from either disease is to stay home. However, this is also an important way one can help not spread germs if they themselves are suffering. If you or someone you know is suffering from flu or COVID-19-like symptoms, do not go out and about! Stay home and schedule an appointment with the doctor immediately.

TIP #4: Schedule that flu shot! As mentioned earlier in the article, the single most effective way to avoid the flu is to get the flu shot. Yes, you may have a few side effects from having the shot (sore arm, mild cold symptoms, etc.); however, these all pale in comparison to contracting the actual flu!

TIP #5: Practice good hand hygiene. Wash, wash, wash your hands! If there is any lesson that we can all say we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is the

importance of washing your hands. This tip remains true also for those wanting to avoid the flu. Making sure to wash your hands as soon as you re-enter your house is crucial. Do not have access to a sink while on the go, stock up on hand sanitizer and use this frequently.

TIP #6: Avoid the eyes. It is important to note that just because one washes their hands doesn’t mean they are completely safe from either virus. If you’re out and about and touch something that is contaminated and then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, the viruses can still infect you! Try to avoid touching these areas when out in public places. And, of course, wash your hands after walking back into your home.

TIP #7: Bring on the masks. These days, masks have become the new accessory.

While there are plenty of fashionable ones to use, it is important that you wear them properly (entirely over your nose). It is also vital to make sure you’re washing any cloth ones after repeated use, or using fresh, clean disposable ones for different activities.

TIP #8: Test yourself when necessary. If you or someone you know is suffering from symptoms of either influenza or COVID-19, make sure to get tested right away. Not only will you then be able to take immediate action (and feel better quicker), knowing whether you are sick can help prevent others around you from getting sick.

A new look at self-care for women!

word “wellness” pops up everywhere these days, and in our information-saturated world that now includes a pandemic, it’s comforting to find a new business owner who is 100% dedicated to defining wellness for what it truly is while focusing on some very personal women’s issues.

As a wife and mother of two small children, WinstonSalem native Dr. Katie Taylor recently moved back to the area, and while exploring career opportunities, immediately recognized a need for pelvic floor, breast cancer, and pain treatments for women. That nudged her entrepreneurial spirit, and she decided to launch her own dedicated practice providing care in these areas in a unique manner, and most of all, empowering women to know and understand their wellness options!

Most unique to her business is that Katie offers service inside TinderBox Fitness for Women in Winston-Salem, along with specialized in-home visits. No doctor referral is needed, as she performs her own patient evaluations, and telehealth options are available during the pandemic.

“I opened Taylor Physical Therapy & Wellness in October 2020, and also offer in-home visits for patients who do not feel comfortable traveling to our clinic,” says Katie, noting many of her patients are new moms or have cancer, and are being very cautious during Covid. “To my knowledge, I’m the only clinic in this area that offers both those services!”

Katie graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program in 2012 and received specialized training at Stanford University for the treatment and management of lymphedema.

“I love it when a woman comes to me and leaves that same day feeling well enough to go home and live her life!” she says. “Wellness encompasses sleep habits, nutrition, stress levels, and, of course, exercise, but small steps and smart decisions can go a long way to improving a woman’s overall wellness. I help them make small, manageable changes to help both their body and mind!”

“I don’t know of any other physical therapist treating breast cancer this way in the area, which is partly why I started my own practice,” says Katie. “Also, I saw too many of my friends and patients being told by other providers their symptoms were “normal.” There are often very good treatment options for pain, leaking, swelling, and other limitations for women. My practice has had so much interest and excitement in the past month, with several other providers reaching out to say they are so glad I’m doing this because there is such a need! It really feels good to be helping women in our community.”

Katie especially loves working with pregnant women.

“When a woman is pregnant, too often she is experiencing back pain and is told that it’s “normal” and will go away once the baby arrives,” she explains. “This is simply not true! While many women do experience pain during pregnancy, there are effective treatments that are safe and gentle to both mom and baby.”

Katie also focuses on helping moms stay active as they prepare for delivery. Many are not sure what is safe to do during pregnancy, and unfortunately, don’t exercise at all. In most cases, it is safe to exercise throughout pregnancy, but it can be helpful to have guidance from a professional, since each trimester’s exercise regimen should look different. For women at all life stages, Katie also addresses what was once a taboo subject patients didn’t feel comfortable mentioning to their providers – pelvic floor issues – and she offers real, lasting relief for common problems such as incontinence, pelvic pain, or painful intercourse.

As a board-certified Orthopedic Specialist, Katie also includes work with orthopedics – and osteoporosis – as part of the Taylor Physical Therapy & Wellness treatment lineup.

“Many women develop core weakness either following pregnancy or due to not performing regular core strengthening exercises,” she explains. “This can make us more susceptible to developing lower back pain and having alignment issues. It’s often overlooked how important a strong core and proper bending mechanics can be to spine health.”

“I think this has been an incredible blessing to open my own practice!” says Katie.

Also a true believer in managing pain and swelling during and after breast cancer treatment, Katie has just completed a three-part series on lymphedema on her social media and YouTube channel.

“Lymphedema is a condition that can develop when a woman has breast cancer and has undergone radiation therapy or lymph node removal as part of her treatment,” explains Katie.

16 Ways to Reduce Monthly Expenses

1. Lower the Cable Bill: The average household cable package runs approximately $215 per month. Do you need 200 channels of television programming? One way to save a substantial amount is to start using free or low-cost subscription services.

2. Are You Eligible for a Discount? Internet, cell phone providers, and power companies may offer a new rate based on your place of employment, profession, or long-term loyalty as a customer. Ask whether auto-pay offers a discount.

3. Shopping for Insurance: It takes time to make phone calls to numerous companies; yet, a quote may lower your bill, especially if you bundle homeowner’s with car insurance!

4. Consider a Balance Transfer: A high interest rate often negates the effort of paying off a credit card. One step to avoid extra costs is to shop for either a zero to 2% minimal fee option across 15 to 18 months. Long term, you can consolidate bills, while aiming for financial freedom!

5. Question Digital Subscriptions: Rather than continue to pay the bill out of convenience, start asking whether you use music and streaming services, dating apps, and cloud storage? Check your credit card statements to view added expenses.

6. Cut Down on Energy Usage: Consider installing a programmable thermostat to establish temperatures when you are asleep or not at home. Additionally, update your lightbulbs by installing LEDs, which are four times as energy-efficient as incandescent bulbs.

Moreover, start unplugging unused electrical devices.

The effort at home will show up in monthly bills.

7. Eliminate Storage: How long have you paid for a storage unit? If years, then perhaps you don’t need it. If you cannot use it, consider selling!

8. Natural Verses Chemicals: How much do you spend on laundry detergents? Combining Borax (washing soda) with laundry flakes makes an effective soap without the high cost! The same applies to cleaning

10. Buy Generic: Comparison shopping takes seconds.

Rather than choose the brand name you grew up with, compare the ingredients with a generic brand. You’ll discover the only difference is the label and the price!

11. Consider Open Box: Online shopping companies feature discounted items from diapers to furniture.

While the box may arrive damaged, the goods are in top condition!

Five Must-See NC Destinations for 2021

Traveling doesn’t always mean heading out of state or hopping on a flight. If you’re in need of a quick weekend getaway or somewhere new to take your family on a Saturday, below are five destinations in North Carolina to add to your 2021 travel bucket list.

Bryson City, NC A little more than an hour west of Asheville, Bryson City is an excellent home base for exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As a charming mountain town, don’t expect too many visitors in the colder months. In the summer, however, the city is bustling. Deep Creek Campground is a popular destination for tourists and locals, offering hiking trails, waterfalls, and river tubing (one of the area’s most popular activities). With only a few restaurants in the town, expect higher wait times during the summer months and holidays.

The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad also draws in tourists year-round for stunning train rides along the Nantahala and Tuckasegee Rivers. Want a break from outdoor activities? Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort is less than a 20-minute drive away. Enjoy a nice dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and a few hours at the craps table before heading back to your cabin or campsite for campfire s’mores.

Atlantic Beach, NC Head to the coast for the weekend and enjoy eating fresh seafood in Atlantic Beach. Considerably less crowded than Myrtle Beach, Atlantic Beach offers beautiful North Carolina Beaches and waterfront restaurants that are sure to take your mind off of the stress of the workweek. For those interested in history, Fort Macon State Park is a short five-minute drive from the Atlantic Beach Boardwalk. Tour the fort or take a walk along the 1.5-mile Beach Trail. After a long day of sightseeing and touring, relax with a piña colada at Amos Mosquito’s Restaurant overlooking the Money Island Bay. Durham, NC Downtown Durham often flies under the radar as a tourist destination, but its streets offer fantastic cuisine and are packed with character. Located across the street from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the beautiful American Tobacco Campus offers dining, retail, and live music, accompanied by a man-made river that runs through the campus during the warmer months. If you’re an art enthusiast, the art galleries at the 21c Museum Hotel are open daily with rotating art exhibits. For an outstanding dining experience, the Counting House restaurant located in the hotel is a popular spot among locals and art-lovers.

Before leaving town, get some exercise and take a stroll through Sarah P. Duke Gardens, offering five miles of walking paths and a one-of-a-kind koi pond.

Pullen Park Not too far from Durham, Pullen Park in Raleigh is a great family-friendly way to spend a Saturday. Children will love the park’s playgrounds, carousel, and pedal boats. The park also houses picnic shelters, tennis courts, and a cafe. With over 66 acres, the park offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and sits just west of Downtown Raleigh. In case of bad weather, taking the family to explore the Marbles Kids’ Museum is an excellent indoor alternative. Children will love the museum’s myriad of interactive exhibits and will be mesmerized while watching an IMAX documentary. Admission to the museum and IMAX film tickets can be reserved ahead of time online.

Troutman, NC In need of a girls’ weekend? Davesté Vineyards in Troutman is located about 10 minutes east of Lake Norman. Purchase tickets for a guided vineyard tour and a wine tasting for less than $30 per person. After tasting a few wines, get in the car with your designated driver and drive another 10 minutes to Zootastic Park to see a variety of exotic animals.

Visitors have the option of walking or driving through the park, in addition to purchasing private animal encounters with kangaroos, lemurs, armadillos, and sloths (to name just a few!). Zootastic also has first- come, first-serve outdoor picnic tables for hosting birthday parties.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve around the World

year, on December 31st, the United States starts counting down to the New Year. Champagne is popped, food prepared, and parties are in full swing, as friends and family gather around the clock to cheer on a new beginning. Between a world pandemic and a very divided presidential election, the one thing many can agree on in 2021 is how thankful we are to have the chaotic year of 2020 behind us.

Considering that the COVID-19 pandemic is still in full swing in our country, and social distancing is highly encouraged, the traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations may be put on hold. Small, immediate family gatherings are likely to happen, which have many wondering how they can properly celebrate this holiday. However, just because the gathering may be smaller doesn’t mean that New Year’s Eve should lack old and new traditions, from rituals like enjoying fresh champagne at midnight to kissing one’s love. While the large parties may not be happening, these routines can still occur.

DENMARK- Watch out below! Talk about taking out some of the 2020 stress! This country has several fun traditions to enjoy. However, one of the most fun traditions is Denmark’s annual rite to take out any personal stress on unused dishes.

IRELAND- Let’s clean! The Irish have some celebrations that anyone who loves a tidy house would enjoy! One of the first traditions they partake in is to spot-clean their entire house. Outside, the Irish even clean up their garden and cars. As it gets closer to midnight, it is also tradition to throw bread at the walls to chase away evil spirits. (Although this seems to contradict the cleaning.) One of the most special traditions, which all can employ this year, is to have an “Irish Special Dinner,” where you reminisce about family and close friends who passed away. To honor these loved ones, the Irish often leave the door unlatched and set a place for them at the table.

SPAIN- Bring on the grapes! Spain is a country known for its delicious wine. While many Spaniards do enjoy some “vino” to celebrate, this is not the only way they commemorate the holiday. The Spanish tradition is to eat 12 grapes, one at a time at midnight. Each grape represents one of your wishes, and if you manage to stuff every grape into your mouth, all your dreams will come true! Another fun custom is to wear colored underwear, with specific colors representing a different hope for the New Year.

AUSTRALIA- Bring on the sun! Australians enjoy a new year in the middle of summer.

This said, their celebrations take on a slightly different approach to the holiday.

Many enjoy activities outside, from boating to hiking. At midnight, many in Sydney

watch the fireworks over the famous Sydney Harbor.

SOUTH AFRICA- Out with the old, in with the new! During New Year’s Eve, those in South Africa are expected to throw out any old furniture. They do so by throwing it out of the window and into the street! Many also enjoy heading to Cape Town to attend a special carnival with singing, dancing, and lots of bright clothes and face paint.

PERU- Let’s enjoy some potatoes! A unique Peruvian tradition is one that involves their beloved crop—the potato. Many Peruvians enjoy a fun custom that involves putting three potatoes under a chair. One of these potatoes is peeled, one is partially peeled, and the other has all its skin. At midnight, a person chooses a potato with their eyes closed, and each yields a prediction for the future. If you happen to be the one that gets the potato with skin, you’ll be prosperous; getting the one that’s partially peeled means you’ll have a normal year, and finally, if you are the unlucky one who gets the potato with no skin, you’re not likely to make much money that year.

With the economic fallout increasing nationwide, criminals are also pretending to be banks and other lending organizations. They offer bogus help with bills, credit-card debt or student loans. In addition, small businesses are being targeted as scammers try to get them to apply for fake loans.

Fake vaccine packaging: Government organizations are learning about “safeguards and brandprotection features” that the vaccine drug companies are planning to put in place to guard against fraud, according to the Associated Press.

Unfortunately, these safeguards may not be in place until the second round of vaccines because everything is being done so quickly. The government organizations are putting a premium on educating health-care providers on what the real vaccine containers look like.

Coronavirus Scams Spreading Fast In the early days of COVID-19, scammers and fraudsters focused their criminal activities on selling counterfeit items – N95 masks, personal protective equipment, COVID-19 test kits, hand sanitizers – to hospitals and individual consumers.

Now that a vaccine is about to be approved, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are seeing a significant number of websites for deceptive and misleading products that tout fake COVID-19 cures. More than 70,000 fraudulent websites have been identified.

In addition, more than 250,000 fraudulent coronavirus reports have been filed with the Federal Trade Commission, amounting to $190 million in losses.

Homeland Security officials and drug makers are working together to ensure that vaccines are clearly labeled. The companies are also setting up hotlines to gather tips about potential fraud.

The FDA offers these tips for identifying false or misleading claims: • Be suspicious of products that claim to treat a wide range of diseases.

• Personal testimonials are no substitute for scientific evidence.

• Few diseases or conditions can be treated quickly. Be suspicious of any therapy claims that are a “quick fix.”

• If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

• Miracle cures that claim scientific breakthroughs or contain secret ingredients are likely a hoax.

• Do not buy COVID-19 vaccines or treatments over the internet or through an online pharmacy.

These websites often try to sell “unproven and illegally marketed products that make false claims, such as being effective against the coronavirus,” said a statement from the FDA. “These fraudulent products that claim to cure, treat, or prevent COVID-19 haven’t been evaluated by the FDA for safety and effectiveness and might be dangerous to you and your family,” the agency reported on its website.

• Do not respond to text messages, emails or calls about vaccines and treatments.

But the fraud tactics are also going beyond fake cures and fake websites.

Here are the most prominent scam techniques:

Finally, if you have a question about a treatment or test found online, talk to your health care provider or doctor.

Phishing scams: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Justice Department have issued warnings about phishing text messages and emails. These messages might warn that you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. The messages may include a link that will download malware to your device if the link is clicked. These messages usually appear to be from real businesses or government agencies. Criminals also use these messaging vehicles to sell fraudulent treatments and vaccines.

Financial scams: Federal agencies are warning of schemes designed to steal government payments.

In May, Credit Karma found that 1 in 5 Americans had been contacted by scammers about stimulus payments or unemployment benefits.

Consumers should be particularly wary of emails or phone calls that refer to “stimulus.” They may ask you to sign over a check or give them personal information like your Social Security number. On Facebook, there are fraudulent messages that promise “COVID-19 relief grants.”

The best advice: Only get vaccines from an approved medical provider. Don’t respond to calls seeking personal information, and don’t click on social media posts that are selling COVID-19 “cures.”

The Heart of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina

It’s

a community that’s been 132 years in the making—the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. After decades of consistent service, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has become a trusted establishment and haven for many. Historically, it’s a place where members have gone to be nurtured—physically, mentally, and spiritually. But in 2020, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina took things a step further—they stepped up to serve in a brand new way.

And now it’s 2021. And what can we expect in 2021? More of the same, dependable support that the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina is known for, and that they have demonstrated so well! The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has proved to be an anchor in the storm for many who are experiencing deeply troubled waters, through e-learning, emergency services, and virtual programs. In addition, the Y’s staff has worked tirelessly to ensure the indoor wellness facilities are safe and clean for everyone.

KEEPING MEMBERS AND THE COMMUNITY SAFE The Y’s wellness facilities reopened in early September, after closing for nearly 6 months in compliance with executive orders across the state. During that time, the necessary work was done to make sure the Y would be a safe, clean place, not just for members, but the community as a whole.

“Two of our greatest commitments as a YMCA are to Healthy Living and Social Responsibility,” Stan Law, President and CEO of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, said. “Making sure our Ys are safe—not just to staff and members, but to their families, neighbors, and anyone else who they may interact with—is absolutely necessary during the ongoing pandemic. We owe it to everyone in our community to do our part.”

The Y has taken necessary precautions, such as spacing out fitness equipment to six feet or more, regularly deep- cleaning the facilities—down to the air filtration system —limiting capacity inside the building, and making sure participants in group-exercise classes are spaced safely apart.

E-LEARNING ACADEMY With the shutdown of public schools, parents throughout the area, state, and country have been faced with monumental challenges. For those parents who have jobs that can be done from home, it may not be easy, but it’s do-able.

For parents whose jobs require them to work away from home—it’s another matter. And then, some families don’t have regular access to a Wi-Fi connection. In order to meet the needs of these families, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina’s Youth Development Team came up with a solution early on—E-Learning Academy.

The E-Learning Academy model opens the doors to students to give them the structure they need to succeed in academics during the time when the traditional classroom is not an option. Stan Law shared, “Parents have experienced tremendous challenges with the closure of our schools, not to mention the toll it’s taken on our students.

For those essential and frontline workers, there was no option. Plan B simply didn’t exist. We are so proud of our Youth Development Team’s strategy to rise to the occasion.

“Through our E-Learning Academy program,” Law continued, “We are able to give kids a safe space to learn and the structure they need, while giving their parents peace of mind while they go about their jobs. Our team has worked hard to create a safe model, where kids receive adult supervision, tutoring, and help with their schoolwork, as well as healthy lunches and peer connections. We’re following all the state rules regarding masks, sanitation, and social distancing. And we have flexible options that can accommodate every individual family’s needs—whether their children need E-Learning Academy through the whole week or only a few days. All the student needs to do is bring their laptop and tools they may need for school. And bonus—when the kids are finished with their schoolwork, they can enjoy the benefits available at the YMCA, too.”

Michael Bragg, Communications Director for the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, shared, “E-Learning Academy is a program that is available at all our YMCA of Northwest North Carolina locations, and the staff to student ratio is 1 to 10 at all locations. The program has been a huge success. Families who are interested in enrolling their children in E-Learning Academy can learn more at ymcanwnc.org/e-learningacademy. Pricing is based on both YMCA membership, as well as the family’s financial abilities—scholarships are available.

“When the schools shut down last spring, I didn’t have the luxury of homeschooling my nine-yearold son because my job requires me on site, and I can’t do my work from home. The YMCA of NWNC eLearning program has been a lifesaver for our family. It’s so comforting to know that my son is in a safe environment, and moreover, an environment he enjoys. He has continued to flourish academically because of the program, so he hasn’t lost his classroom momentum. Because we have been with eLearning since the beginning, we have seen how the YMCA has adapted and responded to the needs of the student. They’ve done an excellent job of being flexible so that the kids get their schoolwork done, they have some free time to be kids, and of course, they are great at communicating with the parents!

EMERGENCY SERVICES Bragg continued, “The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has routinely offered emergency services to families for years. And during the pandemic, we pivoted and found ways to respond to the challenges of COVID. We worked through the chaos and uncertainties by providing emergency childcare services for essential and frontline workers,” Bragg explained.

“Additionally,” he continued, “We’ve partnered with many notable service organizations throughout the community for years, including the American Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the United Way—to name a few.

Some of the ways we’ve offered emergency services include meal distributions. At our Fulton and Winston Lake YMCA locations, between March and August, we (along with the Minister’s Conference of Winston-Salem & Vicinity and Second Harvest Food Bank) served 66,000+ to-go meals through a drive-through service. With so many out of work during that time, we were happy to work together in this community to make sure meals were provided to those who needed them.”

The Y recently received a grant to restart food access initiatives.

Law added, “We have also worked with the American Red Cross to host blood drives. Between November and March, we’ve collected 971 units of blood at 11 locations.

That’s an ongoing effort that, to date, has saved 2,913+ lives.”

As part of their ongoing commitment to community, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina also addressed the issue of isolation, especially with the elderly in our community. Law said, “We were committed to making sure that those higher-risk members stayed connected.

Our Membership team reached out to both the active and inactive members to make sure they were okay. If there was a need, we helped connect them to the resources available in our community. Our team made calls to over 5800 senior citizens who are affiliated with the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina.”

“Beyond emergency services, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has also met members’ needs through technology and outside-the-box thinking. “Our fitness staff provided virtual fitness instructions by creating over 250 videos for YouTube since March. There have been over 200,000 views, and our team is currently revamping those videos with fresh content.”

“And our outdoor group exercise proved to be a big hit,” Stan said. “Even as the weather has gotten colder, we still have members making positive comments about those outdoor classes!” according to Law. COMMUNITY SUPPORT IS NEEDED When it comes to giving back, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has certainly risen to the occasion. “We’ve been thankful that even during COVID, our members paid dues and provided financial support to our organization,” said Law. “Those fees and gifts enable us to keep going strong, despite being closed for six months. We are committed to being there for Forsyth County and beyond, but we still need support.”

The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, and through generous supporters, programs to meet the needs of the community during a pandemic have been made possible. Financial gifts also mean that families in need can have access to programs and resources they may not be able to afford otherwise.

CELEBRATING Social Distance Birthdays You

may be asking yourself, should I throw my family member a birthday party this year? And if so, then how? Well, we are here to help you set aside those questions of hesitancy during this strange time of socially distant gatherings, because every person deserves to be celebrated!

Backyard Winter Wonderland While the winter breeze may bring chillier evenings, there’s nothing a small heater and warm coat can’t fix! For kids birthday parties, try making the backyard a” “themed celebration.” One idea would be a “Winter Wonderland” theme, featuring mugs of hot cocoa, roasting marshmallows by a bonfire to make peppermint s’mores, and making handmade paper snowflakes. Other kid-friendly activities include scavenger hunts, booking local food trucks, hula-hoop contests, or stories by the bonfire. For older kids and adults, try setting up a drive-in movie if you have a small projector and a white sheet. Whether in the back of your car or on the lawn, stay warm with fuzzy blankets, warm drinks, and caramel popcorn for a memorable night. While the possibilities for outdoor-themed parties can be endless, sometimes even the simple measures like sharing birthday cake around an outdoor heater as you chat can bring the brightest smiles.

Drive-By Parades You may be familiar with a festive “drive by” concept in brightening up someone’s birthday.

Whether it’s surprising the special birthday person or planning it for yourself, ask guests to bring along some balloons, or craft handmade posterboard signs. If you are the party planner who is surprising the birthday person, ask the guests to arrive at a designated location in a specific time frame in which the parade will be held.

For example, if you are thinking about a “Little Princess” party, consider a decorated chair as a throne with a birthday tiara to help your beautiful princess feel special. Or think about asking each guest to bring a small bouquet of flowers to blossom in the most amazing, colorful surprise. For adults, you could plan to create your birthday person’s dream menu, then make a sign-up sheet so that guests can assign themselves different elements of a “potluck birthday” meal drop-off. Lastly, let’s make some noise for the birthday celebration by requesting guests to honk, wave, and sing, or play a happy birthday song as they drive by! Moreover, you can consider bringing the party to your guests with a “reverse drive-by.” Simply pack up the car with favorite birthday celebration snacks, tack on a few celebration signs, and make your way around town visiting family and friends to hear their best wishes, and maybe even exchange gifts.

Starting New Traditions Now is the perfect time for a trial run of innovative fun twists to your typical birthday celebrations. The newfound ideas may be a debut for new birthday traditions. Remember, it can be the simplest of ideas that create memories to cherish for a lifetime! A few examples to make the day extra special are letting the birthday person plan the schedule for the day, eating birthday cake or cupcakes for breakfast, or calling the family together for a laughable time in the kitchen, as each tries pancake art. Other ideas include a family game night, virtual dance party, karaoke, takeout from their favorite restaurant, or tying balloons and posting temporary signs on the birthday person’s bedroom door for a morning surprise.

A festive birthday hot chocolate before a treasure hunt for any gifts outside could also be fun.

Outdoor Adventures If the weather permits, take the crew for a weekend getaway in the mountains camping or glamping (glamorous camping). For the outdoorsy, pack food in foil pouches to cook over a fire, pack a picnic to enjoy on a hike, complement fun stories with s’mores dipped in white chocolate and topped with sprinkles, and wrap up in the warmest blankets you can find.

Pondering a Child’s Birthday Gift?

child’s birthday party is not always such a simple affair as an afternoon of celebration and cake! Thus parents often wonder how to please a child on this meaningful day. Never fear! There are numerous unique and creative ways parents can resolve the question that pops up throughout the year.

The Card Not all gifts require a purchase; instead, parents can encourage a present from the heart, a colorful illustration, handwritten letter, or a combination of the two. As children become familiar with the art of expressing friendship through reflection, they learn handmade gifts have a beneficial value!

It’s okay to purchase a “like new” book or give a good friend or cousin your child’s copy. Most books are read one time. Passing along a beloved book extends the experience from one hand to another.

TIP: Consider folding the card in a creative way, such as into a scroll, star, or airplane to ensure it’s treated with care, as well as noticed.

Likes and Dislikes Choosing a gift is no longer the responsibility of mom! Kids should participate in the discussion and assist in the selection process. Begin by asking, “What does he or she like?” Perhaps the classmate enjoys talking about science or books, which influences the decision. Even if your child doesn’t know the classmate well, birthdays can introduce a new passion, perhaps a hands-on activity, skill, or craft.

Kudos to parents who add to the invitation preferences such as “hair accessories, dolls, and puzzles” or “costumes and science.” It’s a big help to parents who need guidance!

Leah Ingram, gifts and etiquette author, writes, “Don’t feel like you have to spend a set amount, just because that’s how much others spend (or others have spent on you in the past). A good rule of thumb is, the younger the child, the less you need to spend. A three-year-old will be just as happy with a squeaking duck as a princess costume.” Close associations matter. Most parents will spend more for a child’s closest friend, $20 to $25, than a classmate, $10 to $20.

After following etiquette’s standards for decades, parents question the request of “No gifts, please!” Most children have enough and do not need more; therefore, is it acceptable to show up emptyhanded? Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert, states, “If the host says, “No gifts, please” on an invitation, it’s good manners to comply.”

past year has thrown us lots of curveballs. Is it any wonder that selfcare is trending? As we get ready to say good riddance to 2020, it might be worth asking, “What if we could give the perfect gift to ourselves for the New Year? What if we borrowed a fraction of our energy use to take care of others and focused that energy toward taking care of ourselves?”

Let’s be honest. We all want to start the new year happy – perfect even. We’ll sometimes make unreasonable resolutions. We expend enormous amounts of energy, time, and emotion trying to meet all the normal year demands: working from home, making sure the Zoom space is free of toys and clutter, cooking, cleaning, shopping, keeping up with children’s online classes, overextending our capabilities and our financial resources. If you throw other COVID-related issues on top of that, the stress multiplies exponentially.

Taking care of yourself as you care for others can not only help improve your own mental and physical state, but it can also help you be more present during whatever limited gatherings with friends and family look like this year.

GENERAL TIPS: • Set realistic expectations. This is especially important around budgets and time commitments.

• Plan ahead. Include downtime and time doing things you enjoy and find relaxing.

• Basic needs. Basic needs are even more important during stressful seasons and times as the impact of including adequate sleep, nutrition, exercise, and outdoor/sunlight time can reduce overall stress levels.

• Be creative and embrace “new” ways to celebrate holidays and spend time with loved ones this year. Some examples include: - Virtual get-togethers with family and friends - Include a theme or focus such as watching or sharing a movie, eating a meal, playing virtual and interactive games, a talent show or contest Follow Family Services on social media for some curated mindfulness practices designed to help you find some calm in this topsy-turvy world. But even with some of the best coping strategies and mindfulness exercises, sometimes life is too stressful to handle alone. Sometimes talking with a therapist who will listen and look for ways to approach challenging situations can help people feel safer, stronger, and regain a sense of control.

• Reach out to others virtually to maintain a level of connection and to reduce feelings of loneliness.

Presents the First Steps of Food Storage

Imbedded in our minds is the worrisome mantra, “What if…” that spans topics from safety and financial security to the health of loved ones, pets, and self. Pondering “What can I do?” can lead to a proactive decision to invest time in the ultimate insurance policy—valuable life skills comprising security, shelter, food, water, and medical care! In any emergency from extreme weather to a personal disaster, you have the power to take charge of your fate by making plans and taking action!

One instructive outcome of 2020 was the realization that we may not always have the luxury to shop supermarket aisles to locate the food we need to feed our families. We all experienced bare shelving and limiting products per household. While food storage sounds like an expensive and overwhelming enterprise, fortunately, planning and preparation never end. Each month, consider setting aside a small amount to invest in expanding your pantry.

It begins with having enough food for each member of your household to eat for three months. With a new determination to prepare, start enforcing the habit of replacing one popular item with two more. The first steps require a plan to buy grocery store products, bulk dry foods, freeze-dried or dehydrated foods, and, in some cases, sealable, airtight containers. Mason jars of all sizes work great!

Grocery Store Items Familiarity is the reason why we go to the grocery store. Without looking at signs, we know where to find every item on our list. We enjoy the ease of opening cans or packages and having a meal readily available in minutes; but start looking at expiration dates when you reach for your family’s favorite comfort foods. Canned chicken and tuna, soups, sauces, and spices all have a timeline of consumption. It’s important to have “extra” on hand. Young children and teens need the calories to grow; therefore, you know it will be consumed!

TIP: Take time to look at your recipes for ingredients that can be found as a canned good. Typically, the shelf life is two years and often longer!

TIP: Start freezing broth in Ziploc bags, laid flat in the freezer, and place beef and chicken bouillon cubes in vacuum-sealed Mason jars. Don’t forget to label and date! Thinking outside the box can help you when it’s most needed!

Dehydrated Foods The beauty of dehydrated foods is that they are 100% natural, which in their raw form allows you to benefit from their essential vitamins and minerals. Everything you need from eggs and butter to milk items, such as sour cream and cream cheese, and that includes fruits and vegetables, is available in a dehydrated or freeze-dried variety. Your dehydrator may be dusty from lack of use, so consider all the items that can comprise a homemade soup, vacuum-sealed in a Mason jar for extended life.

TIP: 2020 taught us the value of growing our own foods. Whether you grow them in a bucket, barrel, planter, raised bed, or the ground, consider investing in amending the soil and growing fruits and vegetables. Start planting in late March through June, and begin again in August through October!

Freeze-Dried Foods Rather than placing foods in a chest freezer for short-term storage, freeze-dried foods have a 30-year extended shelf-life, are lightweight, and preserve the food’s nutrients. The number one reason the market for household freezedryers has risen is that the food is delicious, often surpassing Grandma’s recipes! Take the plunge, and consider investing in single items, such as pineapple, corn, Mandarin oranges, or compact meals, namely, chicken teriyaki. Often wanting a “just add hot water” type of meal, Survival Moms and Dads need a viable solution!

Kids and Food Kids will ravage food supplies. One week, it may be grape jelly, while other weeks will show noticeably fewer peanut butter crackers or powdered lemonade packets. Your shopping may have a new focus, but the family also needs to become invested in the idea. Try reading books together, such as The Ant and the Grasshopper or the Little House on the Prairie series. The lessons apply perfectly today! The goal is investing in our future; therefore, start talking about the purpose of the pantry and how the foods in it can make great meals. Grandmas will love bragging that their grandchildren know how to make homemade pancake batter from scratch, and bread, pizza, and pretzel dough. Not every item comes from a box or a grocery store!

What is elderflower? Elderflower is typically an extract naturally derived from white elderflowers grown on elderberry bushes. While the flowers can be spotted beautifully spaced throughout northern Europe, from late May to early June, you may be surprised to find this capturing extract at a local farmer’s.

What does elderflower taste like? Often, bakers will compare elderflower to rosewater, especially because a little goes a long way. Its intriguing taste can be described as fresh, slightly floral with subtle pear nuances, a little tropical, fruity, and with hints of honey.

seen the old sitcoms with the family all seated around the table, place settings at the ready and the doting mother bringing out the perfectly seared pork chops on a lovely platter in one hand, and a steaming side of farm fresh vegetables in the other. It’s like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, and for many mothers today, it’s a downright fantasy.

The truth is, fiction is fiction. The average family’s day consists of so many moving parts that it’s typically unrealistic to have one person in charge of cooking meals— and getting everyone around the dinner table to eat is a whole other story! The trick is to have your family tackle meal time in a way that works for them! The best place to start is right in your kitchen, making meals (and memories) together!

Let Go of the Leave It To Beaver Fantasy Today the mother watching that same sitcom scene could easily dissect it pieceby-piece, finding the essence of what’s wrong with the image easily by asking herself questions along the way.

How is that mother, father and children all home at the same time for dinner? Surely her children don’t all agree to eat the same thing without complaining? How does she have time to cook an elaborate meal while working a full-time job and running each of her kids to soccer practice and ballet?

It’s okay that the scene in your household at mealtimes doesn’t exactly match what’s on the TV. What’s important is to know your family and the kinds of meals that really bring them together, regardless of when or how they are served. Create a meal plan and cooking schedule that best supports the life each of you leads in your home, and success will follow!

Get Everyone Involved In the Planning There is no better time to get your family involved than at the very start of things!

Regardless of your children’s ages, you can have them help with the planning process. Do you have littles? Take them to the grocery store to help pick out their favorite fruits and veggies, asking them to choose one item they’ve never tried before this week. Preteens or teenagers on your hands? Have them find a recipe on YouTube that they are excited to try and write the ingredients on a grocery list themselves. Those everyday breakfasts, lunches and dinners you create are a great opportunity to teach your family about nutrition from a young age and to build good habits.

Find Joy in the Process Of course, cooking together may take more time, but there’s so much value in the process. In a house with a lot of hustle and bustle, having time with your family to plan a meal and to cook together can quickly become the best part of your week. Remember that as you continue to

invest more time in the kitchen together that skills and tastes will grow! You can make some age-appropriate recipes with your small children, even if it’s something as simple as making PB&J’s for lunches, mixing the pancake batter for breakfast or counting grapes to go in little bags for snacks. Expect messes, whether they come from the kids or your spouse! Who says the family that cooks together can’t also clean together?

Make It Part of Your Weekly Routine Once you decide to start, ask your family to pick a day and time each week to have all of your cooks in the kitchen for meal prep! Make it something everyone looks forward to! Maybe it’s Sunday afternoons after church and you make a fun brunch as a family. Are Wednesdays after work and school the one time the door isn’t constantly revolving? Tackle getting lunches together for everyone by pulling out all the sandwich necessities from the refrigerator and sitting at the table ready to assembly-line-style some delicatessen deliciousness. If you have a calendar hanging in the house or a family calendar app, add a reminder of which time slot is for family cooking, so everybody remembers to block that time.

When you carve out time as a family to cook together, you can transform an otherwise daunting task into a memorymaking time with the ones you love the most.

I saw my primary care physician for my annual visit late last year, he asked how I was doing. I mean…of course, he asked how I was doing. But to me, it’s a meaningless question unless you answer it honestly. It’s a limited question unless you answer it in a more existential way. I opted to do both, beginning with the latter. How was I doing?

Humming and singing to one’s self on an early morning walk sets the tone for my day.

“Well, let’s see…I am Concerned about my husband’s chronic health issues; Weary with being stuck at home; Tired of wearing a mask; Sad about a chronically-ill co-worker I deeply admire; Missing my family back home and my close friends elsewhere; Troubled by the divisiveness in my country.”

I am strong.

“Anything else?”

“That will do.”

“Are you depressed?”

“No!” Hitching a ride on the perfect segue, I went on to explain, albeit briefly, that I was deeply grateful for the many lessons of 2020, an unforgettable year. He smiled behind his mask, understood that I was in a good place, and moved on to the more practical questions about my health. As it should be, I thought.

My many lessons occupy a virtual “gratitude board,” the one that lives in my heart, fueling my spirit and keeping my joy alive, especially when I take a hit. While the litany of 2020 losses can’t and shouldn’t be minimized, when it comes to inspiring gratitude, last year was the bomb!

During the month of January, you’ll most likely find the produce aisles with an abundance of citrus. From grapefruits to oranges to kiwi, your morning fruit bowl won’t miss a beat; however, let’s take a moment to highlight a zesty favorite— lemons. During this cold season, try mixing together a little honey from a local farmer, lemon juice, and hot water for an antibacterial drink that is good for sore throats.

While the uses of lemons vary greatly, from cooking to decorative garland to cleaning, they provide excellent health benefits when employed in both savory and sweet recipes. They are tasty sources of powerful antioxidants, specifically vitamin C and flavonoids, that can help keep free radicals from damaging body cells. The high levels of vitamin C strongly support a variety of bodily functions, like the formation of collagen for strong nails, shiny hair, and healthy skin. In addition, pairing lemons with baby spinach leaves can help your body maximize the intake of both vitamin C and iron from dietary sources.

(Dairy- Free) Lemon Cardamom Creme Brûlée Servings: 3-4

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups Almond Milk ¼ cup Pure Maple Syrup 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract 4 large Egg Yolks 2 Tbsp. Arrowroot Powder 2 Tbsp. Lemon Juice ¼ tsp. Ground Cardamom INSTRUCTIONS: • I n a large saucepan over medium-high heat, whisk together the maple syrup and almond milk. Bring to a gentle boil.

• I n the meantime, whisk together the egg yolks, arrowroot powder, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and ground cardamom. Add two spoonfuls of the warm milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, then whisk.

•P our the egg yolk mixture into the saucepan and mix to combine. Over medium-high heat, bring the mixture to a gentle boil and simmer for 1015 minutes until thick and creamy, whisking occasionally.

• Pour into 3-4 ramekins, then place in the fridge until set.

•S prinkle each ramekin with 1-2 teaspoons sugar, then either torch or broil to caramelize the sugar. Enjoy immediately.

In love with cleaning and household tasks? Umm, no! Who loves surrendering hours of time inhaling strong, unhealthful chemicals and wearing hot, rubber gloves? In listening to the same commercials for years, it’s easy to believe one product will handle just the sink, while another will effectively sanitize countertops! As a result, numerous bottles and cans occupy kitchen cabinets and bathroom closets. What if the location held only four containers?

Start Simple A lifestyle change requires a belief that toxic chemicals and store-bought products no longer serve your needs. Start by tossing out or giving away one or two of your cleaning products. In learning about green ingredients, it’s important to be realistic and choose recipes that work for you and your home! First, it’s vital to understand the value of each natural ingredient. Did you know lemon juice has antibacterial and antiseptic properties and acts as a natural bleach? While the citrus smell is refreshing, the oils in the rinds aid in promoting a shine!

vegetable glycerin. Store in a glass container! (Do not use essential oils. Do not use this recipe to clean aluminum pans.)

• DISINFECTING WIPES: Combine two cups of warm filtered or distilled water with one tablespoon of liquid Castile soap and one cup of 70 proof Isopropyl alcohol. Tea tree and lavender essential oil drops are optional. You can use washable cotton washcloths or paper towels. Cut the towels in half, place in a glass jar, saturate with the solution, and pull out the tube! That’s it!

• SCOURING POWDER: In a quart jar with a screwtight lid, poke holes into the top; then, add one cup of baking soda, ½ cup salt (not iodized), ½ cup washing soda, and five drops lemon essential oil.

Mix or stir well.

How to Use: Spray the surface of the tub with water or undiluted white vinegar first, and then sprinkle powder. Allow to sit for five minutes before scrubbing! Rinse with water!

• FLOOR CLEANER: Add one quart of warm water to a bucket. Pour in ¼ cup of liquid Castile soap. Add five drops of lemon juice.

• BAKING SODA: A mild alkali, which means it is a basic ionic salt that dissolves and removes dirt and grease in water.

• LAUNDRY SOAP: In a sealable container, add one cup of each ingredient—washing soda, baking soda, and soap flakes. Mix thoroughly!

• CASTILE SOAP: A versatile vegetable-based soap made from coconut, castor, and hemp oils. It is nontoxic and biodegradable.

How to Use: Add one tablespoon of powdered detergent per load of laundry and fill the bleach compartment with white vinegar to brighten, soften, clothes and kill odors!

•W HITE VINEGAR: Another natural, nontoxic cleaning product able to kill bacteria, cut through grime, and dissolve hard-water deposits.

Solutions Take Seconds to Make A container can make the difference for both application and ease of use! Consider using canisters to hold powders, with tablespoons to measure quantities. You’ll also need a few small spray bottles!

The effort is worth the seconds it takes to make! And, don’t forget to label it!

• KITCHEN SPRAY: Fill a small spray bottle with water two inches from the top. Add three tablespoons of liquid Castile soap, and three drops of lemon or lavender (optional). Diluting the soap with water alters the shelf life, normally, two weeks. Make as much as you need!

• DISHWASHING LIQUID: Bring one cup of water to a boil; then pour into a bowl with 1/3 cup of washing soda. Stir until dissolved. Cool. Stir in 1 cup of liquid Castile soap and ½ tablespoon of

• STAIN REMOVERS ON FABRICS: Add four tablespoons of baking soda to a small bowl and sprinkle water until it achieves a pastelike consistency.

How to Use: Spoon the paste onto the carpet or fabrics that contain grease, oil, or other stains.

Blot but do not scrub. With severe stains, wait a few hours! Use a damp cloth to dab once again.

Repeat if necessary! Once dried, vacuum!

• WINDOW CLEANER: Add one cup distilled white vinegar to a spray bottle; then, add two cups of water and shake well. Use a squeegee or cotton cloth to dry clean.

Using natural ingredients to clean and sanitize your home has tremendous rewards. While eliminating toxic fumes, the cost to clean the kitchen, bathrooms, floors, windows, and laundry requires pennies. In time, you’ll want to expand the opportunity to switch to greener alternatives, perhaps by including a lemon, wood polish and air freshener.

There is no better way to conquer those chilly mornings than with a warm mug of lightly sweet serenity. Health-based and naturally sweetened to provide antioxidants, these warm drinks will help give you that little jolt of energy first thing in the morning.

After a productive day, relaxing at home on those early sundown evenings with a warm drink can be the simplest of great rewards. Not only can they improve your night’s rest, but your kitchen will smell heavenly.

Vanilla Matcha Latte In addition to speeding up your metabolism, matcha contains the amino acid called L-theanine that not only provides a calmer energy, but also may increase alpha brain waves. Unlike coffee or an energy drink, matcha keeps away the jitters and may help you focus better.

INGREDIENTS: 1 tsp. Matcha Powder, latte grade 8 fl. oz. Vanilla Almond Milk, or regular milk + ½ tsp. vanilla extract (Optional) 1 tsp. Honey, or maple syrup INSTRUCTIONS: 1) In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, whisk together all ingredients. Whisk vigorously until milk is frothy and the matcha powder has dissolved. Serve warm with a dash of cinnamon.

Peppermint Tea The aromatic quality of peppermint helps to naturally relieve anxiety, muscle tension, and stress. While you can simply use a peppermint tea sachet, if you come across fresh mint, then this recipe is worth the extra minute!

INGREDIENTS: 16 fl. oz. Water (about 2 cups) ¼ cup Mint Leaves (about a handful) INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Add the water to a saucepan over medium-high heat to bring to a boil.

2) Add in the mint leaves, then reduce heat to medium low for 5 minutes.

Depending on how strong you would like the tea to be, simmer for up to 12 minutes on low.

3) Optional: Add a dash of milk and honey for a lightly sweet tea latte.

Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate

Enjoy your favorite black coffee with this maple foam that is a tasty alternative to the typical sugar-filled lattes.

Keep life simple with a little latte upgrade at home.

You may have heard the old wives’ tale remedy for sleepiness: warm milk. So, why not take it up a notch by making a healthier hot chocolate that will make you want to put on your fuzzy socks. The addition of ground cinnamon not only helps lower your blood sugar, but can also help you relax, with its natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Another option is to add those ingredients into a microwave-safe jar, heat for 30 seconds, then tightly screw on the lid and shake until foamy.

2) Pour the foamy maple milk over the hot coffee to enjoy warm.

Your House, Your Space, Your Home!

the pandemic will become a thing of the past, while the lessons we learned along the way will stand the test of time. Making your house, your space, your home is one of them. Here are four practical and workable ways to get started: Give yourself permission to think differently about the uniquely personal space that you call home. The pandemic may have been the catalyst for using your space differently, but the truth is, that our lives are always evolving. Children grow out of nurseries, old hobbies and interests are replaced by new ones, and the aging process itself requires us to rethink our space. The opportunity right now is to envision, revisit, and repurpose with intention. Share your intention with everyone in your household and make them partners in this home-affirming process.

ENVISION – Start typing or grab a pen and paper and make a list of the spaces—not necessarily “rooms”—you long for. This isn’t the time to hold back. Getting things down in black and white is the first step toward manifesting what you want. Maybe you’re craving a dedicated place for an office, your plants, working out, crafts, teen activities, or a library. Whatever is on your list, don’t assume you can’t have it. With some rethinking, you may find one or more ways to make it happen.

In

2020, we learned to accommodate our changing lives in new ways. Somehow, packed closets became offices, formal dining rooms became classrooms, and lonely front porches reverted to their original purpose, serving as informal gateways to neighborly connection.

A good friend of mine—in her 70’s!—jumped right in. Mandated to close her small retail shop for a few months, she transformed her small Victorian house into a pop-up showroom. Customers who had frequented her much-loved store arrived masked and by appointment to drink tea while they perused a curated sampling of her collection.

Talk about rethinking things and making what you have work for you!

Necessity, the proverbial mother of invention, helped us to loosen up in 2020, to get creative, and to rethink how we use the space we define as home. But it didn’t stop there. Along the way, a very cool thing happened: we came to understand that “home” can be something we define and make work for the unique needs, pursuits, and interests of our own life—just as my friend did.

This “lightbulb-on” notion goes way beyond color schemes and decorating style. Even the shelter magazines became more realistic and got on board by offering guidance and inspiration for reimagining, and then transforming, our homes into more livable, workable spaces. Thankfully,

REVISIT – With your list in hand, go room by room, imagining how each space might be used differently to allow for what matters to you and how you live now. For example, that “spare” bedroom that’s relegated to hodge-podge storage is prime real estate waiting to be purposefully claimed, so what can it be? My formal living room—where no formal living has ever existed—is now my evening reading room. It is stacked with favorite books and magazines, warm lighting, and seasonal candles. Thinking in terms of what matters now, formality has been supplanted by serenity.

Leaving no space without a purpose, a large empty corner is sectioned off by a decorative wall screen, camouflaging the clunky vacuum cleaner and other mundane but necessary things.

REPURPOSE – Once you have settled on how you want to revise or repurpose a space, focus on removing those things that no longer fit to make room for those that do. You will become more confident as you declutter with your new vision in mind. Take it one step at a time, as you embrace how your home is evolving right along with you.

2020 was a year to remember! In pondering all the challenges of change that have occurred over the year, we can reflect on, and learn much from, the experience!

Is there one person in the family who has vital information such as the name of doctors, medications, and medical history?

Super Bowl and AARF?

What

makes up a perfect Super Bowl Party? You need good food, good friends, a nice TV to watch the game and, of course, you need puppies. For the past two years, we have been putting together a Super Bowl party that consists of great friends and super-cute foster puppies from The Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation of Winston-Salem (AARF).

AARF is a nonprofit, no-kill, foster-based animal rescue that finds homes for more than 900 cats and dogs each year.

AARF believes in foster-based care of animals which provides socialization and nurturing that animals in shelters don’t have access to. This approach allows AARF to help animals with special needs, pregnant or nursing moms, and newborn kittens and puppies that would face health risks in a traditional shelter.

When you get a cat or dog from AARF, you know you are getting an animal that has been evaluated in someone’s home with family and other pet interaction. You are also getting an animal that has received all necessary veterinary care and that the cost for spay/neuter surgery has been covered by AARF. Our family has been privileged to foster more than 100 puppies in the last three years. The Puppy Bowl was a way to bring excitement to our friends and family during the last two super bowls. We partnered with another foster family and gathered 6-8 dogs in our puppy stadium (aka dining room with green turf field). It

has been a great way for the puppies to get some more cuddle time from a new group of friends and help spread the word about AARF and the needs of the many abandoned dogs and cats in Winston-Salem.

Fostering has impacted my life in a positive way by bringing joy every day when walking in the room and seeing cute puppies with wagging tails and puppy kisses. The greatest fulfillment comes from delivering puppies to their forever homes and knowing that they will become part of a new, loving family. We pour our love onto the puppies for a few weeks and get them ready to give love back to their new family. It is hard to say goodbye, but knowing they have a new permanent family, and we can get another batch of new puppies to start the process all over again, makes it all worth it!

This year’s Super Bowl may look different than in years past, but in my house, it will be full of puppies, as always!

Due to Covid-19, the AARF office is closed until further notice; however, the work continues. There are still many wonderful dogs and cats to choose from which can be found on the website (aarfws.org).

Applications can be found and filled out online. AARF also welcomes monetary donations, as well as donations of greatly needed supplies to care for the animals they rescue.

Four Lessons to Redirect Contentment

THE KITCHEN In German and Scandinavian traditions, a homemade witch astride a broom is hung in kitchens as a charm of luck and protection. The doll’s body is often comprised of dried apples, the remaining season’s cornstalks, and is draped with a cloth. The kitchen, once a location of eating and washing, food preservation and candle making, spinning and weaving, and childcare, soon changed in size and purpose; yet, this wellcherished talisman remained to ward off misfortunes, such as cooking disasters. Every action, from combining ingredients to stirring, creates a form of magic. We take for granted that our daily effort has the power to nurture every member of the house.

LESSON 2: If the kitchen equates to high levels of stress, redirect your energy through tools, utensils, and small appliances.

Meal preparation exists with spiritual awareness and can be performed in a relaxed, focused manner.

you ever closed your eyes and wished a magical being would come to clean your home, while promoting energy, creativity, and a place of refuge? Some would gladly welcome these brownies, fairies, or witches! As we open our eyes, the inevitable happens. We alone must carry the challenge of enhancing the beauty of our hearth and home! The “house witch” is the modern-day woman or icon, a being of empowerment and skill. Her magic instills beauty, peace, and nourishment for all who dwell within.

THE HEARTH Living your life is a spiritual act. The routine of day-to-day activities ends, to begin anew. We often go to the one place that provides spiritual comfort. Throughout the ages, it has been the hearth. The place at the center of our living space. Children stood near to receive warmth, and women gathered to stir pots, while men enjoyed warmed loaves of bread. Today, the comforting glow of the fireplace brightens the darkness and brings everyone to the present moment—aware, and together.

LESSON 1: It’s easy to think about the million and one things that pull you in four directions.

Start practicing the spiritual principles of “Hearthcraft” by channeling your positive energy to a peaceful place. Say a prayer and focus on your positive intentions. Even the simple tasks can nurture your soul.

• Think about the act of washing your hands as cleansing undesired energy.

• Always sit down to eat to honor the food and the people seated around the table.

• Light a candle, if possible, to redirect the minds of everyone gathered.

ITEMS OF PROTECTION Is fortune connected to a physical object or a color? Perhaps you carry a four-leaf clover or a rabbit’s foot, wear amethyst or a lucky pair of red socks. You can use natural items, from trees and plants to stones and bells, for the same purpose. Did you know an oak tree planted in your yard defends against physical harm, while a Birch tree symbolizes protection for children? Knowing the representation may incite a feeling of blessing.

• Start researching the stones and gems you wear frequently.

• Do you have symbols of luck in your home, such as elephants, horseshoes, four-leaf clovers, rainbows, or lucky bamboo?

• You may have wind chimes on your porch, not realizing they guard against intruders and negative energy!

Lesson 4: Purification of a home is a sacred technique. It’s more than just cleaning or removing dust. Some cultures use sage to combine smoke with spirituality. Burning incense or a candle brings forth a blessing. Cinnamon links to productivity, while lavender encourages peace. Through every action, despite the word “cleaning,” you are purifying, cleansing, and ridding the home of negative energy!

5 Health Benefits of Pickles

are one of those things—you either love them or you hate them. And yet, no matter what your opinion may be, they will inexplicably show up beside every sandwich you ever order. Actually, there is a reason for that…. It started in a Jewish deli in New York as a palate cleanser (the acidity supposedly helps you enjoy the taste of your sandwich). It’s tradition!

But whether you take your pickle or leave it, one cannot deny the health benefits of pickles. Consider the following:

They ease muscle cramps. Like crazy fast. Local drummer Wayne Heidel, whom the writer of this article is probably married to, knows this to be true.

In fact, he carries a water bottle filled with pickle juice to every show he plays. If he gets a leg cramp while playing drums, drinking pickle juice effectively relieves the cramp within moments. You can purchase pickle juice by the gallon on Amazon.

Pickles aid with digestion. They are full of probiotics—at least real pickles are. We can start getting really snobby really fast when it comes to pickles. Look for fermented pickles versus pickles made with vinegar, if you want to get the biggest probiotic bang for your gut (see what I did there??). We generally think of yogurt for probiotic health, but don’t discount pickles, either!

Living with More Intention

you ever wished you could do more to adopt a greener lifestyle? Households now actively separate and/or discard plastic containers, glass, and cardboard, and delve into marketplaces to purchase viable second-hand furnishings and clothing. The impact of minimalizing, whether you have relocated to a smaller house or chosen other aspects of the philosophy, has led many to a simpler lifestyle.

HOW TO DECLUTTER Do you have drawers and closets that you struggle to close? Are there moments when you wonder where to put items without enough space? Start thinking about reducing your possessions.

Eliminating the clutter promotes organization, reduces stress, and provides more financial freedom! The question may be, “How do I get started?” Take five to ten minutes a day to tackle one shelf or drawer.

Label three bags with “trash,” “donate,” or “relocate.” In the bag-method, you have a defined purpose for each item.

• MUDROOM: Hooks and boxes can identify a place for the many items everyone needs within the household; therefore, find a way to organize bags and backpacks, jackets and shoes, leashes and keys, and purses.

• MAIL AND PAPER: It takes just seconds to extract needed statements and letters and discard the rest. The next time you access each account, request to go paperless and save on the paper clutter!

• DONATE CLOTHES NO LONGER WORN: Pull out the bottom third of your stacks of T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and jeans. Extract the apparel that is too small, faded, full of holes, or outdated! Then, go through your hangers and do the same!

• READ BOOKS: Public libraries and schools will gladly take books in good condition. If you only intended to read it once, pass it on to someone who will enjoy it!

• BATHROOM CLOSET: Start tossing expired medications and old beauty products.

• LINEN CLOSETS: Go through pillowcases and sheets to check for holes, tears, or stains. Perhaps it’s time to repurpose the old linens!

Decluttering and Repurposing • KITCHENS: Consider selling or donating extra pans, casserole dishes, and baking pans. Either way, you can pass along items to someone who needs them.

EXPANDING THE DEFINITION Living with intention requires a promise to make shopping habits simpler. Why bring home more plastic bags when you can shop with durable, recyclable bags? It’s an effort that takes remembering.

• Rather than use expensive, commercial cleaning products, switch to natural options, such as baking soda, Castile soap, lemon juice, and white vinegar.

Each one effectively cleans, deodorizes, and disinfects.

• Plan nutritious weekly meals to eliminate overspending, and eat seasonal foods.

• Stop using items that serve one use, such as sandwich bags or food coverings; instead, use dishwasher-safe lids • Switch to a stainless steel or aluminum water bottle!

HOW TO REPURPOSE In our fast-paced instant need for gratification, we often don’t consider how to repurpose or upcycle our broken or damaged items. We quickly trade out the new refrigerator and bring in a replacement. Why not use it for storage either in a garage, basement, or exterior building,

or bury it underground to serve as a root cellar?

• Old mugs, bowls, storage jars, teapots, and galvanized tubs require a hole drilled in the bottom center to make planters.

Don’t forget to add a handful of gravel before planting to help with drainage!

• Learn about the process of composting to recycle plant-based goods back to the earth for decomposition. In the daily effort, you’ll have mineral-enriched soil to use!

• Save mayonnaise and pickle jars to hold rubber bands, pencils, or coins!

• Use mugs, Mason jars, or ceramic teacups as a container to hold used candle wax.

• Damaged woolen sweaters can line hanging flower baskets.

• Transition old wine crates to shelving for books or canned goods.

• Use old CD cases to organize and store cables.

• Reuse cardboard boxes with an opening, such as Kleenex boxes, to store plastic bags.

• Take an old shoe rack to organize a pantry.

Reflecting on our shopping habits and wants, we will find that living with more intention embraces the idea of “less is more.”

It’s

the start of the New Year and we are still in pandemic mode. Vaccines are on the horizon but safety still remains of the utmost importance to control the spread of COVID 19. I thought it would be fun to see what some folks (my friends) throughout Forsyth County have been doing to keep themselves busy during these months. There could be some ideas or things that you haven’t thought of that might inspire you.

I personally wish I could share something exciting that my family has been up to or new tradition or hobby that we have implemented. Unfortunately, in August I broke my foot, shattering it, requiring emergency surgery, a multitude of hardware and 4 different casts – now my big outing is to physical therapy 2x a week and I’ve graduated to an ankle brace and am quite excited about the slow progress. This injury has reminded me what a wonderful family I have, helping me with all of the details of daily living. I have wonderful friends and neighbors that have brought food, helped get our son to and from school, and my sister who has become my personal chauffer and our ‘laundry lady’ deserves a big shout out. I love you Whitney & thank you.

1st question - What is something new you have done during COVID that you might otherwise not have done with this new time you’ve been given at home?

1. We have been able to focus on some long overdue house projects and I have been enjoying doing some needlepoint!

1. I n April, I started walking around the neighborhood with my husband.

1. Once we realized our children would have classes online, high school for our daughter and college for our son, we wanted to spend time together traveling. Since late in the summer of 2020 we have been to the NC mountains for a week, the NC coast for one month and over 2000 miles throughout Florida. Without the changes to online classes for our kids because of COVID we would not have been able to spend so much time together making new family memories.

2. When COVID passes our family is looking forward to continue exploring new places together in our travel trailer, but also getting back to flying and visiting other parts of the world again, too.

1. C OVID has turned me into an online creature. The silver lining is that I’ve saved all that commuting time which I now have at home with my family. That has been a rare, good thing about our current circumstances.

I’ve also discovered that I don’t recognize people I know at the grocery store when they are wearing a mask. My internal facial recognition systems don’t work well in the COVID mask environment.

I look forward to trips with family and friends, tailgating and attending ballgames, social events, meeting with colleagues, sitting down in a restaurant instead of driving the food home to reheat it. My 2021 Word of the Year

I’ve been doing a “Word of the Year” study since 2017. It’s an interesting thing to do…if you’ve never done it, you may want to consider it. It’s a great way to focus and grow—even achieve a milestone. I take a Word of the Year study quite seriously, and I make it a point to be mindful of it throughout the year. So far, I’ve studied “Selah” (2017), “Timing” (2018), “Forgive” (2019), and “Contentment” (2020). I gave a recap of my 2020 Word in last month’s column, and again, I have to laugh—that God gave me the word “Contentment” in the year of a pandemic is proof of His sense of humor…. But I digress. I’ve gotten in the habit of dedicating the January column to my new word and want to share it with you. But first, I want to tell you about how it was chosen.

I share the opinion of pretty much everyone—2020 stank. As a small business owner, I’ve watched the numbers and listened to doctors, governors, the President, and the press talk about COVID to the point my ears were ready to bleed. Seriously, I’m so done talking about it. I don’t usually deal with anxiety, but I really struggled with it in 2020, as did many of you.

When I began to ponder my 2021 word, the word that kept coming up for me was “Trust.”

I was starting to wrap my brain around it, thinking it was the logical choice, when one day, I was listening to a sermon, and the preacher talked about “Surrender.”

It was like getting hit between the eyes.

I already talk about “trust” quite a bit. I trust God. He has proven Himself to be faithful throughout Scripture. On a personal level, He has proven Himself to be trustworthy to me on countless occasions. God is worthy of our trust, and I don’t need to be convinced of that—I already am. But it’s one thing to speak of trust, and it’s another to act on it. And I’m brilliantly good at telling God that I trust Him with something…and then telling Him how

I think things should be done…. Or laying something at His feet…. And then picking it back up.

When I heard the word “surrender,” I realized—I can’t wholly declare my trust in God until I learn how to completely surrender everything to Him. Surrender my business. Surrender my todo list. Surrender my wants. Surrender my marriage. Even surrender my son. I have to surrender it all back to God and recognize this painful truth: I am not in control. And if I’m going to trust Him completely, then I have to surrender the steering wheel of my life, as well as everything I value. I have to trust that even if God took everything away, He is still God, and He is always trustworthy. And my trust in Him cannot be contingent on the illusion of control that I think I have, but on the total and complete surrender that He is who He says He is.

In Galatians 2:20, the Apostle Paul wrote, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Y’all—I know this truth. I believe this truth. But again, I’m not always good about living it out.

To live a life of Christian trust—to put my faith into action—means I have to die to my own agenda and surrender everything to the One who redeemed me.

This may be the scariest word I’ve ever tackled.

But I’m also excited about it. I know that God has a lot to teach me. And as has become my habit, I’ll make sure you hear how it went when I write “My Grace-Full Life” for December’s issue. Until then, Happy New Year! I am praying this one is better than the last!

MINUTE for your Minister Spiritual Warfare

As

a pastor, I can’t figure out why ministry is so tough. It’s not physically challenging. That’s why my colleagues and I experience higher instances of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It’s not any more demanding of my time than many secular jobs- and I’m not under-compensated, but I know many of my friends in ministry are.

Is it because our families held to higher standards or unrealistic expectations?

Maybe, but all parents want their children to behave and mature with grace.

So what makes ministry so hard? We know the devil and his demonic forces delight when any man or woman falls into sin; but with the pastor it is different. When a pastor becomes apathetic or unscrupulous, the devasting effects will often impact hundreds of families and entire communities.

In Jesus’ parable about the soils in Luke 8, the condition of the soil becomes irrelevant when the sower is discouraged from even scattering the seed.

Pastors are ALWAYS on the front lines of spiritual warfare. As you think about these things, please be diligent about fighting in prayer for your pastor!

New Year’s Resolution—Give Up Already!

I know.

You don’t normally hear that from a pastor. So, let me explain. This is the time of year we consider making some serious changes in our life or setting lofty goals. Like, run a marathon. Give up red meat. Lose half our weight. Give up our cell phone when we are not in the office. Etc. But we all know how these things usually go.

the friend, a former Marine, I created a training program to prepare me. I trained almost daily. And trained hard. Now don’t get me wrong, the event was still brutal, but I made it through and have the T-shirt to prove it. And that is the difference.

We need to stop trying (going from 0-60) and begin training...taking small doable steps on an almost daily basis.

You don’t need me to tell you about a News and World Report study stating that about 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail. Well, I guess I just did. But you likely already know this, as you have tried and ended up dumping them by Martin Luther King Day. Been there, done and done that myself. That is why I say, “Give up!”

Or, more specifically, as one writer puts it, “Stop trying and instead begin training.”

So what is the difference? Years ago, a friend talked me into signing up for the “Tough Mudder.” It was (until COVID hit) an annual competitive event. It involved running about 12 miles cross country with obstacles every half mile or so, including having to wade and climb through chestdeep mud. Hence the name. What if I did nothing and just showed up and tried to compete in the Tough Mudder? As a middle-aged guy, I likely would have had a coronary. But instead, with help from

“Wait! You are a pastor, not a fitness trainer or a life coach! What does this have to do with God, following Jesus, etc.?”

So here it is. Some of the principles that prepare us to run marathons or compete in the “Tough Mudder” also apply to our life with God. For example, most Jesus followers want to have more patience.

Be kinder. More considerate. Less judgmental and more compassionate.

But what we find is if we simply try to do these things, we end up falling on our metaphorical face. No matter how hard I try to control myself when my teenage daughter leaves her dirty dishes all over the house, I end up exploding with anger.

So what do we do then? Jesus says in John 15:4, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” And

so, how does this fit into the “Trying vs.

Training” conversation? Jesus is saying that for us to “bear fruit,” which includes becoming more Jesus, we need to keep an intimate connection or relationship with Him. This is the training component. And by doing this, we are able to do what we couldn’t do on our own.

So, what does this look like then when it comes to the Christian life? Or, how do we “train” as Christians? As students of our master Jesus, we “practice” the spiritual disciplines, such as prayer, studying the Scriptures, silence, solitude, worship, etc. Those activities that Christians for generations have discovered connect us with God. Or maybe better said, those ancient practices create space in our lives so we can experience God’s presence more fully. And then, by God’s power rather than our own, we can be patient with our messy teen, or have more compassion for our lonely elderly neighbor, and so on. So, we don’t just try to run a marathon; we train for it. We don’t just try to be a better Jesus follower; we train for it. So, yes...as we look to 2021, give up trying. Instead, begin training and watch our goals become reality, rather than buried in our New Year resolution grave.

Girls’ Night “In” Idea (COVID Style)

was a year of creativity! While the world has been on lockdown and we have been 6-feet-apart for months, people have been forced to find creative ways to get things done and stay sane. So, when my best friend’s wedding was canceled, along with the bachelorette party, a few of my friends and I decided to make her still feel special despite all the disappointment! Originally, we wanted to do a local winery tour in the area, but in true 2020 fashion, that was not possible!

So instead, we got creative. We decided to plan a Girls’ Night IN with a wine tour all our own!

The first thing we did was book a lake house. It was important to us to get away and make it feel like a mini-vacation. We had a beautiful place right on the lake with a deck overlooking the water. We booked about a month in advance, so we were all able to self-quarantine the two weeks leading up to the trip, and each got tested for COVID before we left. We all felt comfortable being close together for the night. We also keep the guest list small for good measure. It was absolutely perfect for a Girls’ Night In, especially for exhausted moms who were ready for a little break!

We arrived around lunchtime and snacked while we caught up on the past few months. There is only so much you can talk about over Zoom…some news you can only deliver in person! After we got settled, we decided to start the “wine tour.” Each guest chose a “region” to bring a bottle of wine from, snacks/charcuterie to go along with it, and the host for that wine tasting. We traveled around the house and grounds, going to each winery and tasting wines from all over the world! We also ordered adorable personalized wine tumblers and drank out of those while we “toured.”

Our first stop was “Napa Valley, California!” We tasted a Cabernet Sauvignon with brie and crackers on the back deck of the house overlooking the water. It was a beautiful setting and we were able to spend time chatting comfortably while sipping delicious wine. Even better, unlike going to a real winery, we were able to do all of this in our loungewear and slippers!

Our next stop was “New Zealand!”

We traveled down the yard and out onto the dock. We tasted a

Sauvignon Blanc with goat cheese, salami, and artichokes, while sitting by the water. It was a little chilly, so we brought blankets, enjoyed the view, and caught up on each other’s lives (mostly our kids, but that’s how it usually goes, right?!)

Our last stop was “Italy!” We took a little walk around the block to stretch our legs and make the long trip from New Zealand to Italy. We returned to the house and sat on the front porch of the house, aka “Italy.” We enjoyed a Chianti with Caprese salad and wrapped up our wine tour after taking lots of photos to document our trip! We had a blast traveling around the lake house, tasting different wines, and catching up with the best of friends.

While many things have had to change this year, it has been fun to find new ways to connect with friends. The best part of this Girls’ Night In is that we were all in our rooms, in bed, by 10:00 pm!! Don’t get me wrong, normal wine tours are great fun, but when you can relax with your best friends in your PJs, eat tons of cheese, AND get a good night’s sleep, there isn’t much better!

One Wish, 2021–Don’t Be Another 2020!

I have started and stopped and written and rewritten this article for days. I can’t figure out what is causing my writer’s block. I usually know what I want to say each month, although it may take me a while to get it to read the way I want.

As I was mulling over my conundrum, it occurred to me that it was 2020’s fault.

You see, even though you are reading this in 2021, it is still 2020 for me— that seemingly never-ending year of pandemic, lockdown, and avoidance.

I thought about doing a month-tomonth year in review, but realized I could sum it up in one paragraph. So, what to write? As this column is about being a grandparent, and the many things that go with that title, this year interfered somewhat with that.

The start of 2020 wasn’t so bad; the virus, although already in the United States, had not really reared its ugly head as it would in the coming months.

My husband and I got in a lovely trip to Canada – that would, unfortunately, be our last big trip of the year. Traveling was curtailed, even to Charlotte, as the virus ramped up. This meant not seeing our precious grandkids, which was so immensely difficult. FaceTime is great, but absolutely not the same.

As schools closed and virtual learning started, our school-aged grands had to adjust to myriad changes in their days and lives. While their moms were able to be home with them, the effects it had on them varied. Their schedules were turned upside down: no field trips; no after-school activities; playgrounds, parks, and beaches closed; no play

dates or social gatherings of any kind. As grandparents, we missed being with our grandson on his birthday; a family springbreak trip; grandparents’ day at school; and the end-of-school-year ceremonies.

As spring moved into summer, things slowly opened up. Our out-of-town grandkids came to Wilmington for a brief stay. Although they rented a house to continue social distancing, we finally got to be together. Our next visit with them didn’t happen until Halloween. Even though we are family, we have to remember that even though we all follow the rules with social distancing, masks, and hand washing, we can’t know who our children and grandchildren have come into contact with, and vice-versa.

As the Charlotte grandchildren go to a private school, it opened up in September with a host of safety procedures in place. Even our visit at Halloween kept us alert—more for the children than for us. We were not about to bring even a sniffle into the house that would keep them out of school.

After initial quarantining, we have seen our in-town grands on a regular basis.

We all have procedures in place, and not one of us would endanger anyone else. It has been wonderful to be able to connect with them. We have been able to enjoy dinners, birthdays, and whenever-we-want-to get-togethers. It

brings us great joy and lifts our spirits like nothing else can. To us, family is everything!

This really hit home when we spent the weekend after Thanksgiving in Charlotte. That Saturday, we made our annual trip to Ashe County to find the perfect Christmas tree. Staying away from crowds, our usual restaurant lunch was a picnic at a park. The tree being found and pictures taken, we returned to Charlotte to spend the night, before returning home on Sunday. After telling our daughter what special memories the trip always makes, she called later that night to let us know how glad they were that we came, and how our grands were teary-eyed, saying how much they missed us.

This year, I am not going to make any of my usual New Year’s resolutions— most of them become momentary blips throughout the year anyway. Instead, I will fervently pray on a daily basis that 2021 brings an end to the distressing year 2020; that we will find ourselves enjoying some normalcy and can once again embrace our family and friends and never take being together for granted.

I wish you all much health and happiness throughout 2021!

Explaining Disturbing News

are resourceful! With a keen sense of listening and clueing in on keywords, they become aware of tragedies and violence that occur daily in the world. While it may be difficult for adults to engage them in conversation, children are openly talking about their feelings with classmates at lunch, or learning through other avenues such as social media, or adults’ conversations. Rather than wait for questions, open the door and welcome in dialogue. It’s the first step toward easing your child’s worries, while learning the essential facts from you!

Assessing Information Surveys provide detailed information on the thoughts of children and teens. In our own experiences, the presentation of news can be a continuous line of negativity. Children, ranging from the ages of 10 to 18, have resonated similar feelings of anger, fear, and depression. Starting from the age of seven, most children understand the news is real. Start by asking your children if they know about a current event. Inquiring can create an open dialogue to determine what is either being discussed in school or learned through other avenues. Be prepared, parents! Children process information over time and may ask questions later in the week or when you least expect it—for example, before bedtime!

Listen and Observe Body language and silence can help parents know their child is perhaps thinking about, but having difficulty expressing, ideas. Encourage communication by asking questions, such as, “Was a person involved?” Starting simply can introduce topics slowly and help the child understand his or her fears. Often, children worry that an event may be close to home and expand that notion into wondering, “Could that happen to me?” Take the time to access a map or globe and share specific locations.

Also talk about possible locations for help, such as a nearby city or airport.

TIP: As news media repeat information and graphic images throughout the hour, consider turning off the television after the first viewing.

TIP: School-aged children have difficulty discerning between facts, opinions, and misinformation. It’s the ideal opportunity for older children to invest time reading multiple sources to verify the particulars and derive a point of view.

Answers and Uncertainty Comfort comes from the act of sharing fears, just by talking openly! As adults, we, too, find frustration by not having the full story. It’s okay to say, “Not all problems have immediate solutions, but we can continue to learn more about the situation together,” or, “We can pray for everyone’s safety.” Start visiting the public library to check out age-appropriate books about historical events and people, and natural disasters in both fiction and non-fiction titles. Introduce yourself to a librarian to ask for recommendations! Reading how characters solved problems may help children and teens understand many facets of a situation, especially the timeline of cause and effect!

Explore Positive News The beloved children’s television host of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood once said, “When something scary is happening, look for the helpers! You will always find people who are helping!” Toddlers and elementary-aged children celebrate the community support of men and women and their modes of rescue. The news isn’t always about negativity! Engage children in news about rescues, acts of kindness, public policies and laws that make our communities, states, and nation a better place. As we openly introduce the workings of our world to children, they, too, can seek to contribute!

Becoming an Advocate One of the best ways to help children and teens process current events is to link them to an experience. Even on the fringes, young people can help by donating water, canned goods, gently worn clothes, or toys.

• Tragedies also impact neighbors and friends; therefore, encourage your child to perform an act of kindness.

• Family plans that cover electrical outages from natural disasters help children establish readiness, versus a feeling of uncertainty and panic. Include a plan for each member of the family to know what to do, where to go, and whom to contact!

Through open discussions, children can actively be part of a world event, even if the topic is too large and broad to understand completely. Every aspect of human activity, whether positive or negative, offers a means to talk about help, support, cooperation, and coping with hardships!

Baby, it’s cold outside. And whether school is out for a snow day, or your family is just in the mood for some comfort food, these dishes are fun to make and eat on a chilly day. The hot chocolate on a stick is also a great little hostess gift, or for the neighbors to celebrate the New Year. (Let’s hope 2021 is worth more celebration than 2020!) And the hamburger ring is an entrée that can be put together quickly and is very versatile. Consider changing it up by adding sautéed green peppers, onions and mushrooms, and subbing provolone for a Philly cheese steak ring.

HOT CHOCOLATE ON A STICK SUPPLIES Ch ocolate Chips (high-quality is better) Mini-marshmallows Sprinkles Candy canes (crushed) Clear treat bags (small) Mini-muffin tray or ice cube tray Ribbon DIRECTIONS 1. Microwave chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl for 1 minute, stir, and microwave again at 15-second intervals until melted and smooth, stirring in-between.

2. Spoon melted chocolate into mini-muffin tin or ice cube tray. Decorate tops with mini- marshmallows, crushed peppermint candies, and sprinkles as desired. Then place wooden stick or plastic spoon into the center and freeze.

3. Once frozen solid, remove from freezer and pull stick/spoon gently to release. Place into clear treat bag and tie off with ribbon.

4. To serve, place into a mug and pour hot milk over top.

EASY CHEESEBURGER CRESCENT RING INGREDIENTS: ¾ lb. Ground beef ½ cup Ketchup 2 Tbsp. Yellow mustard 4 slices American cheese, quartered ¾ cup dill pickle slices, patted dry (optional) 2 t ubes (8 oz. each) refrigerated crescent roll dough Thousand Island dressing (optional) DIRECTIONS 1. P reheat the oven to 350° F. Unroll crescent dough and separate into triangles. On an ungreased 12” round pizza pan, arrange triangles in a ring with points toward the outside and wide ends overlapping slightly. Press overlapping dough to seal.

2. I n a large skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef until no longer pink (6-8 minutes). Break into crumbles and drain. Stir in ketchup and mustard. Remove from heat.

3. S poon beef mixture across wide end of triangles. Top with cheese and pickles. Fold the pointed ends of triangles over the filling, tucking points underneath to form a ring. Don’t worry—the filling will be visible!

4. B ake 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Serve with Thousand Island dressing as dipping sauce if desired.

SNOWFLAKE FUDGE INGREDIENTS: 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk 1 ½ cups semi-sweet melting Chocolate (works better for fudge than chocolate chips) 1½ cups white melting chocolate N o npareils ball Sprinkles in pink and blue for decorating DIRECTIONS 1. Line a 9 x 9” baking sheet with parchment paper, with some overhang for later removal.

2. Place the semi-sweet melting chocolate and ½ can condensed milk into the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat. Mix continually until smooth.

(Alternatively, melt in microwave-safe bowl for 1 minute, stir, heat for 15 seconds, stir again until smooth, repeat if necessary.)

3. Pour onto the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly. Refrigerate 10-15 minutes until slightly set.

4. Place the white chocolate and the remaining ½ can condensed milk into the top of a double boiler and stir continually until smooth. (Alternatively, use same method as in step 2.)

5. Pour over slightly-set chocolate layer and spread evenly. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.

6. When fudge is firm, remove from refrigerator and use the overhanging parchment paper to lift the fudge out of the pan and onto a cutting board.

7. Cut into squares/rectangles with a knife, or cut out circles with a cookie or biscuit cutter. Use a knife or rounded point of an offset spatula to carve a crisscross-star pattern into the top later. Press nonpareil sprinkles into the ends of each indented line for a “snowflake” effect. Optional: Brush with luster dust or sprinkle clear cookie sugar for extra sparkle.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

The Power of One Voice

As

I look back on my sons’ first time voting in an election and anticipating the upcoming Presidential Inauguration, it reminds me of my initiation into politics. It was 1969 and I was a young boy growing up in a small southern town in Virginia. The school I attended was predominantly white. I remember my childhood years fondly. I learned later through history that racism existed during that time, but I wasn’t aware of it. My first introduction to politics was three years later when Richard Nixon ran for re-election for the presidency.

I remember everywhere I looked, campaign signs were for Nixon, and everyone I knew, except for my parents, supported him. So, as a young boy with no idea about politics, I went along with the crowd. Later, when Nixon ended the Vietnam War, I felt I had been right.

History, however, would indicate that Nixon’s motives for the withdrawal from Vietnam were less virtuous and more for political reasons to get re-elected, knowing his opponent symbolized the popular anti-war movement. (see NPR. org, “George McGovern, an Improbable Icon of Anti-War Movement” October 22, 2012.) On August 9th, 1974, Nixon resigned after facing almost certain impeachment and removal from office.

More recently, I watched a movie entitled The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Cross Creek Pictures, Marc Platt Productions, 2020) about an actual trial that took place in 1969 and 1970, whereby eight defendants were accused of conspiracy by the federal government to incite a riot in protest to the Vietnam War during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The film indicates that the Nixon Administration filed the charges after winning the presidential election to discourage Anti-Vietnam War protestors.

I won’t spoil it for you, but my point in this example is how Nixon discouraged Anti-Vietnam protestors in 1969

through this widely publicized federal trial, yet ironically, while campaigning for reelection in 1972, he promised a cease-fire to the war if he won reelection.

He followed through on that promise on January 27th, 1973, shortly after his inauguration for his second term.

One could say politics (and opposition research on his opponent) gave him a change of heart. Unfortunately for those protestors, he was four years too late.

One other note on that 1969 trial, as I said originally, there were eight defendants.

Bobby Seale was an African-American man also accused; the remaining defendants were white males. The film shows him being mistreated, implying sensational racism was involved. I remind you this was all taking place unbeknownst to me while I lived my comfortable life in small-town America. In my world, racism didn’t exist, or so I thought, nor did I know that some protestors in Chicago were possibly saving my oldest brother and millions more from having to serve in Vietnam as a result of their acts of bravery. Not discounting those brave, heroic souls who were asked to actually serve in this war.

This brings me to October 2020. In a year involving a failing economy, a global pandemic, racial injustice, and nationwide protests, there was the presidential election. My family requested absentee ballots to avoid the crowds on Election Day and the risk of infection by the virus.

We weren’t alone, as more citizens voted absentee in this election than any other time in history. Fifteen days before the election, my family sat around our dining room table and we each took out our ballot envelopes. It would be my two sons’ first election to be a part of. My oldest son, however, was not present, deciding instead to take part in person for early voting. So, it was just my wife, my youngest son, and myself. I noticed my wife was eagerly ready to tear open the envelope and mark her ballot. My youngest son seemed the same, although it appeared to be more like something he simply wanted to get over with. I was concerned he wasn’t realizing the magnitude of this powerful responsibility he held in his hands, and I didn’t want to let the moment go unnoticed.

Recalling how my first introduction into politics went, along with my naiveté of the social injustice taking place “outside of my world,” I wanted to confirm he felt fully informed in this moment and ready to cast his vote. I asked him if he’d done his homework and understood the candidates’ platforms, at least the major political positions up for election.

He acknowledged he was aware and felt comfortable with his choices, knowing his vote was as important as anyone else’s.

I didn’t ask him afterward whom he voted for. I decided to let that be his own experience. I have no doubt he was more informed than I was back in the day. In the end, I was grateful that he acknowledged the relevance of the moment and realized he was representing his generation and the future of our country. That’s all I could ask for.
