It’s

my season y’all! Out with Halloween decorations and in with fall and Thanksgiving!

We’re in that year-end trimester of back-to-back reasons to add a little festiveness to your usual décor. I just love decorating for the seasons, and anyone who’s been to my home can attest to that. Seriously though, I have a fourth of my basement dedicated to storing all my holiday and seasonal treasures. Homegoods is my friend and some may even think I have a problem. While I know many of them are silly little things, I’m always filled with memories from years past when I drag them out each year. Starting out as newlyweds, your first child, a new home. Each one weaves the years together into a beautiful tapestry of life.

Our November cover features Duke Eye Center of Winston-Salem. They have recently added four new physicians to serve our community’s vision needs. From routine eye exams to more complicated issues, they are available to help. This issue is filled with the usual holiday happenings in our community. The Festival of Lights at Tanglewood Park opens November 15th (see page 12-13). And performances of The Nutcracker (see pages 10-11 and 20-21) and Carolina Christmas with the

symphony (see pages 18-19) are not to be missed. I learned of a new event in Pilot Mountain this year where Santa and actual reindeer make their debut, on pages 3 and 24-25. And last year, I attended the Christmas Silver Tea to benefit Cancer Services (see page 14) that is sure to become a new annual tradition for many. And don’t forget Operation Christmas Child boxes are being collected the week of November 18th-25th. My good friends at Hayworth-Miller (page77) and WBFJ (page 93) make it easy to drop them off.

I look forward to gathering with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for, and there is nothing quite like the traditional Thanksgiving meal. Sometimes you end up feeling like the stuffed turkey you just ate!

UNCSA’s The Nutcracker Introduces Two New Family-Friendly Showtimes

The

holidays are just around the corner, and it’s time to start planning how to make the most of the year’s most festive season. Your holiday fun list should include experiencing an extraordinary performance of dancing and music that has become the star of Winston-Salem’s holiday traditions: UNCSA’s annual production of The Nutcracker!

Presented by the UNCSA schools of Dance, Design and Production, and Music with support from Wells Fargo, Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet opens at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 13th. This year’s calendar includes new options, with family-friendly times on Saturday, December 14th at noon and 5:30 p.m. Additional performances are at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 15th, and on Saturday and Sunday, December 21st and 22nd; and at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, December 18th through 21st.

The UNCSA acclaimed production of The Nutcracker will feature a total of ten performances, December 13th through 22nd, at the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem. The heralded ballet has received rave reviews from critics and enthusiastic audiences since the reimagining of the production by former Dean of the UNC School of the Arts’ School of Dance Ethan Stiefel.

“Our Saturday matinee performances, which traditionally have been at 2 o’clock, are always popular with families. However, this year, we’re moving our Saturday, December 14th performances to noon and 5:30 p.m. to give families greater flexibility in terms of nap time and bedtime,” said Claire Machamer, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications. “We hope to see the Stevens Center filled with excited families for all of our Nutcracker performances, but especially for our two December 14th performances.”

Assistant Dean of Ballet Jared Redick directs The Nutcracker with original staging and direction by former Dean of Dance Ethan Stiefel. Highlighting this year’s Nutcracker is celebrated guest conductor Karin Hendrickson, who also conducted last year’s monumental production of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass at UNCSA. “Local audiences were awed by Karin Hendrickson’s vibrant conducting last year in our production of Mass, and they will be delighted this year as she leads the Nutcracker Orchestra in performing Tchaikovsky’s iconic score,” said Interim Chancellor Brian Cole.

For the best deal in town, take advantage of the great prices on The Nutcracker “Family Four Pack” for the evening performances on Thursday and Friday, December 19th and 20th. Family Four Pack tickets are only $148 for Orchestra Side/Front Balcony and $110 for Center Balcony. The “Family Four Pack” offer is subject to availability.

Individual ticket prices vary by seat location, starting at $24 for children 13 and under and $29 for adults.

A Holiday Tradition

holidays are near! And that means enjoying the Tanglewood Park Festival of Lights! This magical event has long been an area favorite.

In addition to the beautiful array of holiday lights, visitors can enjoy shopping at The Gift Shop again this year. There will also be horse-drawn carriage rides, and tractor-pulled hay rides to enhance the tour. Lowe’s Foods will once again host the S’moresville fun at The Gift Village, and best of all, Santa will be back at the Festival this year!

Jessica Sanders, Marketing and Events Manager for the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation, announced, “Forsyth County Parks and Recreation is so excited to present the 2019 season of Tanglewood Festival of Lights, sponsored by Lowes Foods! Lowes Foods has been the most festive partner over the past several years, and we are so looking forward, once again, to sharing in this unique community experience. We are thrilled to announce that Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at Festival of Lights this season. So, be sure to make plans to share your Christmas list and get your photos with Santa! Much to our merriment, one of our brand-new displays from the 2018 season, the magical large Moravian star, was a huge hit! We loved seeing it pop up on many of your Instagram feeds and all across social media. The Moravian Star will be at Festival of Lights again this season for you to view for the first time, or revisit and perfect your photography skills. We also wanted to remind everyone to make their carriage and hayride reservations, as availability does book up quickly. To make reservations for carriage and hayrides, please call 336.766.9540.”

This year, the Festival of Lights will run from Friday, November 15th through Wednesday, January 1st. Hours of operation will be 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. each night, with the exception of Tuesday, December 31st, when the show will close at 10:00 p.m.

The Gift Shop, located at the Red Barn, is a must for visitors.

Situated halfway through the light show, The Gift Shop offers holiday crafts, wood workings, homemade baked breads, cookies, jams, honey, fresh fudge, and many other locally sourced items. Guests can shop for jewelry, clothing, pottery, wood carvings, dog treats, lamps, and candles.

What a great place to do your Christmas shopping! Hours for The ift Shop will be 6:00 to 11:00 p.m., Sundays through Thursdays, closing at 12:00 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with the exception of December 31st, when it will close at 10:00 p.m. An ATM will be located inside The Gift Shop.

Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides take you and up to three guests for a ride through the Tanglewood Festival of Lights. Tractor-Pulled Hayrides allow you to view the magic and splendor of Tanglewood’s Festival of Lights with your family and friends on a fun hayride! S’moresville will once again be presented by Lowes Foods. This long-loved family tradition is located in The Gift Village, right outside The Gift Shop. Lowes will be selling the roasting sticks on-site, with either marshmallows or S’mores kits. Lowes provides all you need to create this delicious treat! S’moresville will close each evening at 10 PM and will be closed on Christmas Day.

The most popular times for visitors to attend the Festival of Lights are weekends just prior to Christmas, so, consider visiting on a weeknight to experience shorter wait times to enter. 3rd-Annual Christmas Silver Tea to Benefit Cancer Services

the 3rd year in a row, there is a unique holiday event happening in Winston-Salem that ties together the Christmas spirit, a silver tea service, and raising money for a great cause. Co-chairs Stacey Karagiorgis, owner of Little Richard’s Barbeque, and Zoe Michael, owner of Mama Zoe’s, Yama’s and Cin Cin Burger Bar, are proud to bring the 3rd-annual Christmas Silver Tea Cancer Services Benefit to WinstonSalem. As members of the Daughters of Evrytania at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, they both have a heart for service and philanthropy.

They have enjoyed using the Silver Tea to raise money, and awareness, for Cancer Services Winston-Salem. Last year they raised $10,000 that directly impacted the lives of cancer patients and their care-givers right here in this community.

Cancer is a widespread disease, and chances are you or someone you know has been directly affected by it. What you may not know, is that if you are diagnosed with cancer in this community, you will soon be contacted by Cancer Services. This local organization, established in 1955, works hard to serve their mission: “To enhance the quality of life for those living with cancer and to provide the gift of life through education.” They work

Cancer Services is an organization that Stacey Karagiorgis holds very close to her heart. She was shocked when she received a diagnosis of Breast Cancer in 2016. She said, “When I was diagnosed, it was like someone hit me upside the head. I really wasn’t sure what to do. But then, a group at Cancer Services called Pink Broom Sticks reached out to me. They introduced me to all the support and education available through Cancer Services and, with their support, I knew I would be able to handle the things that came with the diagnosis. I had lived in Winston-Salem all of my life, but having never dealt with cancer in my family, I just wasn’t aware that a place like Cancer Services existed.” Cancer Services’ outreach really changed how she felt about what was happening. Karagiorgis went on to say, “Once they reached out to me, I felt like I was not alone and that I would be able to get through this. Everything I needed was there; it was exactly what I needed, at just the right time.” In 2019, Karagiorgis is cancer-free, but she continues to use cancer services for education and support.

The host of the Christmas Silver Tea is The Daughters of Evrytania at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. They have a history of philanthropy in this community. This group was started after the original members emigrated from the Evrytania region of Greece. Its members now are 2nd- and 3rd-generation family members. They have always focused on philanthropy, and put on a fundraiser every year. Over the past several years, Karagiorgis felt compelled to recommend Cancer Services as the beneficiary of the event because of how much help they were able to provide during her diagnosis and treatment. They chose Cancer Services as their beneficiary in 2017 and are proud to continue to raise money for this worthy cause.

This is a great event you will not want to miss. In addition to a classic presentation of tea, there will be a full buffet of heavy hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats. There will also be a variety of local vendors, including Nitsa’s Apparel, who will be doing a pop-up shop. Be sure to participate in the silent auction as well. You will also enjoy holiday music, Christmas carols, and performances by professional ballroom dancers and numerous dance academies for your entertainment.

The Christmas Silver Tea will be held on December 7th, 2019, at 4 pm at the Greek Orthodox Hellenic Center—435 Keating Drive in Winston-Salem, NC. Reservations are accepted in advance of the event. PREDIABETES:

Could It Be You?

Some

people may already know they are at risk or have a family history of diabetes, but do you know if you are prediabetic already or have a significant risk for prediabetes? Prediabetes is when a person’s blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed with type-2 diabetes.

Prediabetes increases the risk of type-2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Over 86 million American adults, more than one out of three people, have prediabetes, and nine out of ten people with prediabetes do not even know they have it, as there are no symptoms. Most people don’t know they have prediabetes until they go to a health care professional and have their blood sugar levels tested.

But, there is hope! 58% of people with prediabetes CAN reduce their risk of developing type-2 diabetes by participating in a structured, lifestylechange program such as NC MDPP. The North Carolina Minority Diabetes Prevention Program (NC MDPP), hosted by the Forsyth County Department of Public Health in Winston-Salem, coordinates classes designed to empower people at risk for prediabetes to take charge of their health and well-being. The program is free and delivered by trained lifestyle coaches who are there to help participants every step of the way to reducing their likelihood of being diagnosed with type-2 diabetes.

Each hour-long lesson introduces one

strategy that has been proven to help prevent type-2 diabetes. Lessons also include simple steps that participants can take to eat healthy and be active, and are designed to motivate each participant to make changes in his or her life to prevent diabetes.

During the free 12-month program, participants will work with a trained lifestyle coach, receive support from others working on the same goals, be empowered to make healthy eating and physical activity choices, achieve and maintain a healthy weight, identify effective ways to manage stress, and implement strategies to stay motivated. Phase one of the program includes at least 16 lessons focused on the basic strategies needed to prevent diabetes, and phase two includes at least six lessons that provide additional support and cover specific topics, such as stress and eating, maintaining weight during the holidays, heart health, healthy cooking, and strategies to manage and maintain weight loss.

People with the following risk factors should strongly consider joining NC PP today. Participation in the program is first-come, first-served, and participants can register by contacting the NC MDPP Program Coordinator at 336-703-3219.

A Carolina Christmas Returns to Kick off the Holiday Season

Winston-Salem Symphony’s popular fun and festive concert, A Carolina Christmas, will once again take place Thanksgiving weekend. This annual tradition is the perfect way to kick off your holidays and will take place on Saturday, November 30th, and Sunday, December 1st, at Reynolds Auditorium in Winston-Salem. This year, A Carolina Christmas will be conducted by the Symphony’s new Music Director Tim Redmond, and features a blend of Appalachian harmonies, along with the sounds of the season.

Celebrating 25 Years of Dance

One

of the area’s premier dance studios is celebrating 25 years of bringing the joy and art of dance to local students. The Ballet & Performing Arts Centre in Winston-Salem marks its anniversary celebration by presenting an updated performance of The Nutcracker. The BPAC has been performing this magical ballet annually for 23 years. This year’s Nutcracker will present updated choreography, designed in part by very talented BPAC instructors Natalie Calvano, Margaret Forsh, Donna Franklin, Nicole Lawson, and Meghan Wham. New costumes will grace the performance, including in the opening party scene and also for the Snowflake and Icicle characters. And special guest artist, ashod Wells, will perform the roles of Snow King and Sugar Plum Cavalier.

As has been the tradition for 20 years, the BPAC performance of The Nutcracker will be held at eynolds Auditorium. The first of three performances will be a matinee on Friday, December 13th, an hourlong abbreviated version of the ballet to which the BPAC encourages local schools to attend. Tickets for this performance are $10. Interested schools can contact the BPAC for group packets via their e-mail address, BalletandPerformingArtsCentre gmail.com. Traditional two-hour performances will also be offered Friday, December 13th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 14th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for these performances will be $18 for children and seniors and $28 for adults. The mission of the Ballet & Performance Arts Centre is to encourage individuality, creative expression, and an appreciation for the art of dance, while promoting positive personal growth and providing unparalleled instruction and performance opportunities to students of all ages and abilities.

Started in Lewisville 25 years ago by artistic director and owner, Natalie Mizell Calvano, the Centre moved to its current location on Robinhood Road in WinstonSalem 18 years ago. The staff at BPAC is carefully chosen

by Natalie and each instructor is professionally trained, many of them having earned their BFA or MFA degrees in dance. These talented instructors instill the love of dance into the students while offering superior instruction in a diverse array of disciplines. The BPAC offers instruction in Classic Ballet, Pointe, Variations and Partnering, Progressive Ballet Technique™, Jazz, Contemporary, Tap, Hip Hop, and Stretch & Conditioning.

Students enjoy a 5,000 square-foot facility, containing three dance studios with portable barres and sprung floors for comfort and safety. The Centre offers a schoolyear program that runs from August to June and includes the performance of The Nutcracker as well as a Spring program consisting of performances in Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap and Contemporary. The next Spring program will be Friday, May 22nd, 2020, so mark your calendars and stay tuned for an announcement of the theme for this exciting performance.

Natalie also offers a preschool creative movement and pre-ballet class, called Little Leapers. It is available to interested preschools and is currently being taught at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Preschool.

It consists of a once-a-week thirty-minute class for preschool age students. Interested preschools can contact Natalie via e-mail to learn more.

BPAC is also represented by a competitive dance team which will perform at the Spring Program. The competition team consists of students who audition, and once chosen, are divided into duets, trios, quartets, and other groups based on age, ability, and strength.

Dance instruction at BPAC enhances discipline, structure, muscle development, physical grace, and motor skills. Students also benefit from learning to work in groups, as well as gain confidence to perform

individually in front of live audiences.

Character development through the discipline of dance instruction serves BPAC students throughout their adult lives, whichever careers they choose. “We are so very proud of the many bright young dancers who have graduated from our studio with a solid work ethic, personal integrity, and a positive sense of self,” says Natalie.

the last 45 years, The Montessori School of Winston-Salem (TMS) has been providing a unique educational experience for this community. By using the Montessori approach to learning, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, TMS implements a responsive approach to education centered around the specific and changing developmental needs of children as they grow. The aim is to foster each child’s growth physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively.

Over the years, TMS has provided a variety of programs that have evolved and changed, leading up to a current program that ranges from the age of 18 months through the ninth grade.

If you are interested in learning more about TMS, the students have a unique perspective on what makes it such a special place to learn and grow. Prospective families can gain great insight on understanding the value of an education at TMS by simply listening to what they have to say. Students from all grade levels were asked a variety of questions regarding their experience. Here is what they had to say.

Children have a way of saying what they mean. They tend to be even more honest with each other. That is why the students of TMS were asked, “If you met a new friend, what would you want them to know about your school?”.

“I really like the TMS community because everyone is friendly and willing to help each other. The Adolescent Program offers meaningful and purposeful work and not random things to keep us busy.” ~Riley, 8th Grade “That it’s a good school. Everyone is nice.” ~Liam, 3rd Grade “Our community is creative, helpful, and kind.” ~Caitlyn, Age 5 In the Montessori classroom, the prepared environment is an essential part of the experience. It is a delightful space scaled to the size of the child and designed to meet their developmental needs. Independent learning is combined with a sense of community and caring for one another. Students at TMS were asked, “What do you like about your Montessori classroom?”.

“A Spanish lesson where we made Sugar Skulls for the Day of the Dead. It took a few days to make. We built the mold, then decorated and painted them. TMS provides some truly unique opportunities for students. There are many long-standing traditions and events such as picnics, community sings, trips, and more. This keeps students engaged, excited, and promotes lifelong learning. Students were asked, “What do you look forward to at TMS?”.

“The camping trip to Grayson Highlands. I camp on a regular basis, but this will be the first time camping with friends from school, so it will be a different experience.” ~Harris, 7th Grade

Over time, the Seven Wonders have changed. The newest list was created in 2007, after more than 100 million people voted to name the “New Seven Wonders of the World,” which are listed below: 1. The Great Wall of China in China 2. Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 3. Machu Picchu in Peru 4. Chichen Itza (The Yucatan Peninsula) in Mexico 5. The Colosseum in Rome 6. The Taj Mahal in Agra, India 7. The Petra in Jordan Many children and adults may not be familiar with some of these landmarks.

However, there are fun and creative ways to learn about them. These activities are hands-on and can be done on a rainy afternoon, a summer day, or a weekend of learning at home.

• Take a virtual field trip on Google Earth to the Seven Wonders. Visit earth.google. com/web and search the various places.

Then, zoom in and out and explore the landmark’s history. You can also learn about the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World” by searching the website of “The Museum of UnNatural History” (unmuseum.mus.pa.us/wonders.htm).

• Create a passport or scrapbook with pictures and facts about each wonder.

In addition, Photoshop pictures of your child in front of the site to help make the experience come alive. Other options include putting together a tourist guidebook, brochure, advertisement, or newspaper. Let your child take on different roles and careers to learn about the famous site. There are many avenues you could take with this activity.

• Make a physical version of the landmark. For example, use paper, markers, and paper towel or toilet paper rolls to build the Christ the Redeemer Statue or create the Great Wall of China with Legos. Common materials that could be used are clay, construction paper, salt dough, rocks, and fabrics.

• Instead of making a physical object, design something digital, such as a video, a commercial for the Seven Wonders, etc. Use sites like iMovie, WeVideo, and Prezi and let your children’s imaginations run wild with creativity. Plus, you can even create an at-home green screen and digitally replace the background with the wonder.

• Study about the culture, cities, and countries where the wonder is located. Research the area’s climate, food, music, arts, historic sites, and more. Then, celebrate that wonder by bringing it and its home country to life. The more vivid and hands-on the experience children can have when learning about the Seven Wonders of the World, the better they’ll be able to remember and retain the knowledge they’ve learned.

• Word searches, puzzles, and quizzes/ challenges are more interactive ways to connect the history to a wonder. Also, children of all ages love coloring pages. Plus, it shows children another visual/picture of the site.

Through Giving, We Grow: Steven and Steve Jones Steven Jones is tall; he has to pitch his shoulders forward a bit to be at the right angle as he chops vegetables, carefully mincing carrots, celery, and onions for a mirepoix.

“Steven always said he wanted to be a chef,” says his father, Steve.

Perhaps it comes from watching his father cook at home, or perhaps from the days he volunteered in the kitchen of a Reidsville assisted living home in Reidsville--Steve is not sure. But it is in a kitchen–specifically the kitchen at the back of the Second Harvest Food Bank–where he has seen his son grow.

Growth and Independence Steven’s autism diagnosis as a child understandably changed the Jones’ world. As his father speaks of the family’s navigation of the world with autism, his voice is even and quiet–it is unclear if his calm and patient demeanor was fortuitously well-suited for parenting his son, or if these characteristics are a result of that journey.

Through Giving, We Grow Steven and Steve’s story is emblematic of how, through community, we can simultaneously receive, give, and grow. While certainly the staff and students at Providence Culinary Training helped Steven learn and flourish, he and his father quickly took those skills and folded them back into the community, as if they were kneading bread to help it rise.

Second Harvest’s Providence program might be the reason why Steven and Steve gained the necessary culinary skills, but Steven and Steve are the reason why a group of special needs young adults have an opportunity to grow and give back.

This holiday, what can you give back? Through volunteering, through advocacy, through giving, at Second Harvest, you can be the reason a family enjoys a meal together.

“I could see his development in the kitchen. I could follow up with what he was learning in classes at home,” says Steve of his son’s time in the PCT program. “To be there and actually be able to watch him grow to function freely and independently was an amazing experience. Anything I can do with him, I will do. But now he can do things better than me,” he laughs.

While Steve is clearly tickled at this, one can also see that for a moment he is overcome with a wistful pride by the thought of his son becoming so independent; so mature; so free.

“For so many people, Providence is their second chance,” reflects Steve.

“But for Steven, it was his actually his first chance. And the impact on him was so great.”

Steven and Steve found Second Harvest’s Providence Culinary Training (PCT) together, conjoined in daily activities as father and son as they had been for 23 years. Because of his interest in cooking, Steve thought that the 13-week program might be a good place for Steven to gain some culinary skills, have a healthy and productive routine, and be in the community.

At his PCT graduation, Steven proudly walked onto the stage to receive his diploma and a brand new set of professional knives to the joyous applause of his classmates and his family. But that was not the end of Steven and Steve’s relationship with the program.

Celebrating Adoption

is the term used for the anniversary of an adoption, coming from saying, “This is the day I gotcha!” While this day is also celebrated by parents of fourlegged furry children, it is especially significant to parents who have adopted their human children—either privately or through foster care. While not all adoptive families celebrate this day, many do for different reasons.

Adoption is not a path for the easily scared away or weak of heart, and there are several different types of adoption.

Familial adoptions and step-parent adoptions can be common, but are less often talked about. The most frequently discussed types of adoptions are private infant adoption and adoption through foster care.

In order to be considered by the government to be able to be an adoptive parent, prospective parents have to go through a grueling process of training, interviews, medical exams, and home visits. This process itself can take months, even close to a year, depending on your county and anything else you have going on in your life at the time. When you have been approved by your agency, then you get to “hurry up and wait,” as they say, to be matched to a child. When adopting privately, you create a book about your life that is shared with women looking to place their baby for adoption and hope for a match. In foster care, the licensing agency working with you understands what age/level of special needs

you are looking to match with and will contact you when a child is either looking to move to a pre-adoptive placement or when a child is removed from their home. Either way, the matching process can take a long time, up to 2-7 years for a private adoption.

Knowing this, you can understand how grateful and celebratory the finalization of this process can be for adoptive families. During this whole time of matching and waiting, it’s important to also remember that the children are also waiting. For children in foster care, this can be excruciating, waiting for permanency.

Gotcha day is not just an excuse to have cake and a family party (although let’s be honest, that part is a lot of fun). Gotcha day is a day to celebrate being able to

breathe again, knowing that you have a forever family that won’t change. When asked about his family’s Gotcha day celebration, Jackson (not his real name), a nine-year-old who was adopted by his stepfather when he was three, says that he likes “to celebrate that out of all the kids in the world, Daddy chose me.”

For adoptive parents, Gotcha Day can be a reminder of all the work that so any people did in order to make their family complete. Between handfuls of social workers, therapists, judges, and lawyers, so many more people touch the process of adoption than you can count on both hands. Most important is knowing that your child is irreversibly part of your family, celebrating that your child is a part of the fabric of your family structure forever, and nothing can change that.

Raise the Welcome Sign: Hiring Veterans

dream to become a member of the United States military often starts long before the age of 18. Grandfathers and uncles, and sometimes older siblings offer extraordinary stories of foreign countries, heroic situations, and beloved comrades.

While the plan involves stepping up to protect our country and defending its people, the next step, retiring, often leaves veterans wondering how they might return to civilian life.

One Veteran’s Story As a grandson and nephew of a World War II and Vietnam veteran, respectively, Evan Hafer knew he wanted a similar honor. He shares, “One great thing about the military and war is there are so many opportunities to take low points and turn them into high points.” As the weight of 40 rotations [deployments] consuming 300 days of a year across a decade created a negative psychological effect, Hafer decided to retire from the Green Berets. The return to a private citizen often creates challenges for veterans, who feel their only skill in the civilian world is to think and act quickly. One talent he enjoyed involved roasting unique flavors of coffee; therefore, Hafer took his first step and created an Internet-based coffee company. After just four-years, his 30-million-dollar company employed 70% veterans, as well as partners with numerous organizations to help raise money to aid veterans and their families.

The Reality Each year, as many as 245,000 enlisted service members and officers leave military service and transition to civilian life. The stigma attached to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, and other hidden disabilities are two key reasons employers choose not to recruit and hire veterans. Despite the education and real-world experiences, employers often believe a vet couldn’t assimilate

to the needs of businesses. Being misunderstood detracts from the list of specialized skills only members of the military possess.

not be timely to await the next scheduled job fair or enter a flooded market of job postings; therefore, consider the resources you already have.

Veterans have a propensity to:

• Host with local companies a military job fair.

• possess transferable skills that are effective and proven in realworld situations; • communicate effectively and handle high-stress situations with ease; • understand the dynamics and motivations in leadership from a hierarchical and peer structure; • lead by example, direction, and motivation; • navigate a group to achieve an objective; • value policies and procedures and respect the chain of command; • work under tight schedules and limited resources toward the priority of completing an assignment; • bring a global outlook and technical savvy to any business; • view their disabilities as honorable sacrifices.

By understanding military culture, hiring managers can understand the psychology of a candidate during the interview process. For instance, respect for authority may not show the veteran’s real personality or interest in the position.

How Businesses Can Promote Veteran Employment Evan Hafer is not the only one who strives to employ veterans. Companies now appreciate the discipline and values possessed by individuals with prior military experience. In believing in the military ethic of leadership and delivering results, businesses small and large can increase the number of veterans they employ. The question is, how? It may

• Even a small business with limited funds to invest in costly advertising can choose to spread the word through “social media.” Promoting your company to attract military talent is attainable through posts or brief, well-focused videos. The vital part is to encourage staff and colleagues to share through numerous forums.

• One successful approach is to initiate a veteran hiring campaign and allow employees to recommend dependable comrades. As a result, candidates will feel comforted by a company which accepts and appreciates their service and talents.

TIP: Many veterans are unaware that job requirements are flexible. Veterans may bypass a job description if he or she does not fulfill the full list of prerequisites.

While a company may list a college degree, what truly counts is the overall experience. It is vital to list attributes that are essential to the position.

TIP: Not all applications translate to an individual with military experience; perhaps, accept that the first step should be a cover letter and resume. (Do not fear the military jargon. He or she will appreciate answering questions.)

Overcoming fears is a daunting task for vets. In a poll, 44% believed their military experience impacted the decision of employment and, at times, concealed, their years of service. Hiring a vet can benefit the serviceman and the dynamics of a prosperous business. Begin by raising the welcome sign!

Building the Foundation for the Future of Forsyth County

There

is clear evidence that pre-kindergarten has a profound impact on children’s learning and a lasting impact on the quality of their lives as adults.

The first five years are a once-only window of opportunity to develop the social, emotional, cognitive, and academic readiness that enables children to succeed later in life. A young child’s brain architecture forms at an astounding rate, with more than one million new neural connections created every second. But it’s not only what’s happening inside the brain that matters. A nurturing and enriching environment is required for optimal brain development, the kind of environment provided by the skilled teachers, and “resource-full” classrooms found in quality Pre-K programs.

Every year there are approximately 4,500 four-year-olds in Forsyth County. While 2,700 are eligible for publicly-funded Pre-K based on family income, only 1,300 are enrolled, due to insufficient state and local funding. At the same time, middle-class families constantly struggle to find affordable, high-quality Pre-K programs.

In June 2014, Family Services launched The Pre-K Priority, an initiative involving over twenty organizations from the early learning field, with the goal of making quality Pre-K programs available to all four-year-olds in Forsyth County. This initiative assumed even greater urgency when, in 2017, a Harvard study came out that ranked Forsyth County 5th worst out of 2,873 counties nationwide for helping poor children move up the income ladder.

Quality Pre-K is an effective means for closing the widening opportunity gap for children in Forsyth County. It prepares children

to achieve academic proficiency during the elementary school years, providing the foundation for successful learning throughout high school and beyond. A recent Duke University study of more than one million North Carolina public school children confirmed this, finding significant educational benefits from the state-funded Smart Start and North Carolina Pre-K programs.

These findings have been a spur to The Pre-K Priority’s launch of a public education and engagement campaign, with the goal of increasing public awareness and support for quality Pre-K in Forsyth County. Over the coming months, this campaign will show up everywhere—on billboards and buses, on radio and television, in newspapers and on social media.

Our aim is to ignite public sentiment and create a movement to make Forsyth County a place that makes smart investments in its young children that will ensure the future vitality and well-being of our community. We are grateful to the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust for funding the public education and engagement campaign.

Through our recent scientific survey of county residents, we found that the vast majority recognize the importance of early childhood education and believe we should be doing more to support quality Pre-K. Our goal is to translate that recognition into a commitment to develop and fund a system of quality Pre-K programs in Forsyth County. The time is now to take this step on behalf of our youngest children. After all, they are the employees, parents, citizens, and leaders of the future.

As we like to point out at the Pre-K Priority, “The future is four years old.”

Only six vague words, interpreted as “See-ya-later,” satisfied the parents of 1970. The screen door slammed shut as children hopped on their means of transportation, a Schwinn Stingray, without a plan of destination or time of return. The thought of wearing a helmet, donning knee-pads and carrying a backpack containing water bottles, snacks, and a form of communication may have resulted in being told, “Don’t be such a spaz!” Bounding down the road meant a freedom to explore new streets, take risks, and enjoy the comradery of friends. Kids walked through the mud, swam in the river, and remained outdoors until the hunger pangs struck, or their name was called, carried along with the wind in a calm sing-song shout! No kid wanted to face the consequences, whether it was a wooden spoon, Dad’s belt, or the worst of all—being

BY LISA S.T. DOSS grounded to the house. It was torture to a kid, who wanted nothing more than to be independent. God forbid a friend of the family recognized you, and the news through the party line of “telegraph, telephone, or tell Grandma,” made it home before you did. Immediately, ties severed with the phrase “Gotta go.” And kids raced home to answer the call and the bike returned to its place, and the screen door opened once more.

Parents thought nothing of the day-long absence. There was little to fear of kidnappings or adults preying on children. With everyone helping to set the table, parents and children assembled at the dinner table to say a prayer before enjoying a hot meal. If the house phone rang, the sound echoed from the farthest room in the house to the back yard. Eventually, after five rings, the caller gave up. No one wondered who called, especially during meals. If the news was important, callers redialed the memorized four numbers! Everyone in the family knew when Aunt Sally or Great-Grandma Jean called. It seemed to resonate in the tone of the ring.

And, minutes later, to no one’s surprise, a family member would enter the house to borrow sugar, a stick of butter, or sit down to dinner.

From 6:30 AM to noon on Saturday, parents knew their children were glued to the television watching Super Friends, Hong Kong Phooey, or Johnny Quest, while eating multiple bowls of Fruity Pebbles. Siblings told younger children to turn the channel on the hour or half-hour or face being pinned down and tickled. If only 70s kids had a remote control or pause button to take well-needed bathroom breaks, especially during School House Rock and Looney Tunes!

If the big-wheel wasn’t scraping heels or hands, the obvious next choice was roller skating. Daddy’s orange Carmen Ghia didn’t require a key to turn on the radio.

Whether the song was ACDC “Back in Black” or Freddie Mercury belting out, “We are the Champions,” it was a great excuse to avoid Daddy and Mama screaming at the television, hoping the Pittsburg Steelers won yet another Super Bowl.

Family outings in the station wagon required a systematic seating arrangement.

Daddy drove while Mama sat in the passenger seat, praying the ashes of her cigarette didn’t burn holes into another coat. The oldest sat near the window while the youngest sat on the hump. As the result of aerodynamics, kids slid on the vinyl upholstery and bunched together on every turn. If everyone didn’t sing along with the radio, Dad and Mom talked, and the kids did not dare interrupt.

Privacy was impossible. Bathrooms occupied someone at every minute of the day, and bedrooms housed a minimum of two children. And, should you be privileged to receive a phone call, the entire household knew who had called because your name and theirs was shouted for all to hear, including the neighbors. The only solution was to extend the 10-foot phone cord to the next room or stand on the deck during a blizzard.

Kids didn’t complain when Mama left a list of household chores to finish before she arrived home. The oldest sibling helped divide responsibilities, and each kid fulfilled their part. Praise rarely came to acknowledge a job well-done! Kids knew the expectation and were happy enough to please Mama! Because if Mama wasn’t happy, no one was!

“A Voice for the Children”

henever a child is placed into a traumatic situation, whether it is at home, at school, or even in court, it is difficult for him or her to speak up. That is where Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina comes in! This nonprofit foundation, founded in 2005, stands up for children. They advocate for children who are living in abusive households, victimized by high custody cases, and also children and families dealing with issues involving the public school system.

This past September, the nonprofit organization celebrated 14 years of child advocacy at their Birthday Blast of 2019! This elegant event was flooded with attendees, including sponsors from local law firms. There was also live jazz from Camel City Jazz Orchestra and a delicious full-course meal. Not only did the Children’s Law Center (CLC) celebrate 14 years with their biggest turnout yet, the organization also honored two women for their exceptional work and dedication: Suzanne Reynolds and Pollyann Holthusen.

A HEART FOR THE CHILDREN The CLC is filled with passionate souls for helping children live a better life and growing into emotionally healthy adults. But in order to help a child effectively, one must know the alarming evidence and statistics caused by adverse childhood experiences. Children exposed to domestic violence are vulnerable to substance abuse in later years, teen pregnancy, depression, suicide, PTSD, behavioral health problems at school, and physical health consequences. Children who are abused growing up are 70% more likely to become abusers, or victims as adults, than children who are not abused. “Our goal is to break the cycle of violence,” says Iris Sunshine, Executive Director of the CLC. “Domestic

Celebrates 14 Years! violence knows no boundaries,” Sunshine states. Domestic violence cases occur among low-income families, high-income families, all races, and even in households in which the parents have high-paying jobs. A study by faculty at WFU Law proves that families who are involved with CLC are 70% less likely to return to family court than families that did not have a CLC “Guardian ad Litem.” “That is significant!” declares Sunshine.

INTERACTIVE HELP AND SUPPORT The CLC works with vulnerable children in various ways. First, a Guardian ad Litem gives a report to the judge containing their observations of the child’s living environment and their recommendations to help the child in the most suitable way. This person also testifies in court on behalf of the child. The CLC gathers information by visiting the child’s home, speaking with the child and their parents, their neighbors, and friends. They also obtain information from the child’s teachers and school counselors. They review academic and medical records. From there, the CLC finds solutions and resources to help the children.

QUALITY WORKERS The CLC is loaded with quality, passionate workers who advocate for children. But on the night of the Birthday Blast, two women were honored this year: Pollyann Holthusen for the Leadership Volunteer Award and Suzanne Reynolds for the Founding Leadership Award. Both women are extremely humbled to have received such honors. Holthusen shared that she is “highly honored” to be singled out among workers who are so “dedicated and qualified.” She was board chair and served six years on the board of CLC. With her active volunteering, she helped with fundraisers, outreach, events, and governance. She believes that having a mission and a heart for the children helps the CLC thrive.

Suzanne Reynolds helped to found the CLC, along with co-founders Amy Kuhlman and Penny Spry. She started off by teaching family law courses at Wake Forest School of Law. A close friend of hers, Amy Kuhlman, spoke with her about her dreams of helping children and families thrive. They spoke about the people and resources who could help actualize that dream. Soon, they would form a nonprofit, and Suzanne made her entry as one of the first board members! She was the one who encouraged the partnership of CLC and Wake Forest School of Law to create the Child Advocacy Clinic.

Just 5 Trees Can Establish an Orchard

joy arrives at the moment a hand extends to a selected branch with an eye on the shiny or plump fruit, and plucks it! The small weight in your hand brings happiness. It is an extraordinary gift in knowing we can grow our food, especially the diverse varieties not common to the marketplace. Unlike the commercial growers, who must harvest well before the date of ripeness, backyard gardeners can wait until their fruit reaches its peak.

SECRETS TO SUCCESS Shopping for fruit trees can be an overwhelming endeavor. If you have a love of many varieties, it can be challenging to limit yourself to just apples or peaches. The truth is that not all fruits thrive in our zone. The delicate balance of fruit derives from a tree requiring a specific number of chilling hours. Without attaining these criteria, North Carolina’s fruit-bearing trees may not thrive, bear fruit, or they might become affected by the fluctuations between cold and warm temperatures during the winter season. Since zone seven has a plethora of options, however, our climate is not partial in growing apricots, cherries, and raspberries.

WHAT IS CROSS-POLLINATION? The birds and the bees positively affect the fruit and the trees. The need for a pollinator assists fruit development.

To welcome the pollinators into your orchard, consider hanging birdhouses on a fence or a post. If you are not aiming to try beekeeping with one or two hives, include a birdbath with one or two rocks partially below the water level to encourage the honeybees to stop, rest, and drink.

METICULOUS INSPECTION OF THE TREE’S QUALITY

• Shorten by cutting the roots that exceed the hole to prevent a circling formation.

Not all trees grow as seedlings in North Carolina. Most of the trees come from the Northwest region and are shipped. It is vital that you carefully assess the tree before buying it with the following criteria: • The tree stands tall and straight at roughly four to six feet; • It has a large root ball, even if it is a small tree; • The leaves are green and not yellowing (a sign of stress); • The branches appear healthy and well spaced; • The trunk is free of wounds or damage.

Alternative options are semi-dwarf and dwarf trees, which only require 12 feet and 10 feet respectively for apples.

SITE SELECTION AND PLANTING An advantageous spot offers at minimum eight hours of sunshine a day, and proper drainage. While you can amend your soil with compost and leaves to increase quality, the quality cannot change after planting. Nutrients added to the surface

• Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root system, and as deep as the root ball. As roots expand along the surface, the taproot will burrow down into the ground to create an anchor.

• As the tree grows, the roots will not exceed the longest branches. Try and eliminate weed or grass growth by placing a weed barrier and cover with mulch.

Take into consideration the mature size before planting the second and third three. While figs need to be 10 feet apart, pears and plums require 20 feet to thrive.

THE FIVE-HUNDRED-DOLLAR HOLE Preparing a tree’s home is an arduous task. Fruit may not arrive for several years; yet, the rewards may yield a prosperous harvest from two years to perhaps ten, depending on the variety and quality of the tree.

Start planning! The fall season is an ideal time to establish an orchard. In the state of dormancy, rain and snowmelt help to compact the soil around the roots. As warmer weather arrives and maintains consistency, the trees will show a year’s growth and prosper with continued care and adequate water!

unger is closer to us than we may think. Back in 2011, it was brought to our attention that Winston- Salem is one of the leading areas in America in hunger. This piece of information opened the eyes of many Winston-Salem residents and, surely, many of them asked, “Why? How did this happen?” We realized hunger doesn’t exist only in third-world countries, but it can be our next-door neighbor.

Hunger knows no boundaries, nor does it discriminate. The hunger crisis permeates all cultures, races, neighborhoods, and families of all socioeconomic statuses.

Being hunger-stricken affects one’s mood, development, learning, and behavior, and this is especially true among children.

But hunger is combatable. In order to work more passionately towards fighting hunger, we must be more enlightened about what it looks like in our county.

HOW MANY ARE HUNGRY IN WINSTON-SALEM?

As of 2018 and 2019, 25% of children in Forsyth County are living in poverty, making it difficult for them to acquire proper nutrition. 15.5% of residents suffer from food insecurity—the lack of access to affordable and nutritious food—while 21% of children deal with food insecurity. There are a number of factors that contribute to the hunger crisis: affordable housing, low income, access to health care, and other monthly payments that really pull at one’s income. With grocery prices being so high today, buying quality food becomes difficult, especially when one has a larger family size.

HUNGER IS AFFECTING OUR CHILDREN Being hunger-stricken hinders our children from being their greatest. Not only do hungry children always have to wonder where their next meal is coming from, they also suffer mental and physical effects of hunger. When their developing brains are not getting the required amounts of nutrition, their learning is affected, as well as language development, behavior, and motor skills. Hungry children have a difficult time concentrating in academic environments, because of their lives at home and malnutrition. In the classroom, they have a high risk of failure because their brains lack vitality, which will help them thrive. Physically, hungry children have to deal with a higher risk of being hospitalized

and suffering from health conditions, due to their low immune systems caused by a lack of nutrition. No child or family deserves to live with hunger or the consequences that it comes with. Thankfully, this issue can be solved through the knowledge, empathy, and compassion of others.

LOCAL PROGRAMS THAT HELP With Winston-Salem being one of the top cities in hunger, it is no that surprise our community has various creative ways to help alleviate the challenge. These programs below are designed to assist hungry children and families: • H.O.P.E. of Winston-Salem. The acronym stands for “Help our people eat.” This is a volunteer-based foundation that helps bring weekend meals to children who are at risk of hunger. They deliver Saturday and Sunday meals to hungry homes, using trucks, vans, and shuttles with the H.O.P.E. logo. They prepare fresh meals weekly.

• Second Harvest Food Bank. The people here provide food assistance through local partnerships while educating the community on hunger and how to eliminate it.

• “Think Orange” Campaign. Established last year, the “Think Orange” campaign was proposed by Mayor Allen Joines to combat hunger and food insecurity in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

The name of the campaign was inspired by the color story of Hunger Action Month (September), which is orange and, therefore, has become the symbolic color of fighting hunger. This campaign has major initiatives, such as increasing participation in summer feeding programs, promoting the use of SNAP (food stamps) at local farmers’ markets, providing fresh food for H.O.P.E, creating a hot meals after-school program for children, and more.

Hunger is a prevailing issue, but our help and active support can be even more prevalent and eliminate the hunger we see around us. If you feel led to feed hungry children and families, donate to your local food bank, become an advocate for hunger, or volunteer for an organization that feeds hungry families. Food is often wasted and taken for granted. So, for those who aren’t dealing with hunger, use your blessings to give to someone who can benefit from them in more ways than one.

TRIAD WOODCARVERS – WINSTON-SALEM

What

is woodcarving, you might be asking yourself? The dictionary definition is “the action or skill of carving wood to make functional or ornamental objects.” Clearly, that’s quite a dry definition. Woodcarving’s better definition is that it’s an art form of individual expression using a natural, organic element, i.e., wood. Woodcarving is one of the oldest of all the arts. Think about the tools, utensils, home furnishings, or toys on display in museums. Many of them were carved from wood, sometimes with additional embellishments to make them pleasing to the eye, as well as functional.

The Triad Woodcarvers, founded in 2009, is the most active woodcarving club in the Carolinas and is comprised of members from around the Triad and Yadkin Valley. Members work to enhance their skills, sharing techniques with other members; to expand the interest in woodcarving to the community-at-large; and work on projects for local organizations. Their members have received numerous awards in regional and national competitions. Presently, their membership is at 67, with 19 women carvers and three young people.

Triad Woodcarvers has a well-defined mission statement. “Our mission as a club is to enhance the skills of other carvers by teaching, sharing, and learning new techniques for all carvers, both novice as well as master carvers. Our focus is to promote the art of woodcarving within the general public. We are committed to giving back to the community.” As Ray Branch (Chair, Public Relations & embership) shared, “We are a busy, sociable group who love to share our art with others.”

What Are Triad Woodcarver Activities?

Members work on their individual projects and specialties as well as club projects.

Their projects are varied and over the years have included: In 2017, Triad Woodcarvers displayed a 7½´ Christmas Tree at the Sawtooth School for Visual Arts, decorated with over 200 hand-carved ornaments.

The ornaments were sold, raising approximately $5,500, half of which was donated to Sawtooth’s Youth Scholarship Program.

The Sawtooth project was such a success that they sponsored another Christmas Tree at Sawtooth in 2018. They also displayed and demonstrated woodcarving at two local libraries,

participated in five major festivals, including the Bethabara Apple Festival, and conducted carving demonstrations at the Dixie Classic Fair.

What have they done in 2019?

The group partnered with the Ronald McDonald House to carve and donate 100 Angels of Hope (small hand-held angels). They’re planning to continue this work by carving “comfort birds” for the Ronald McDonald House residents. uring festival season, Triad Woodcarvers participated in the Bethabara Apple Festival, Horne Creek Historical Farm Fall Festival, Hanging Rock State Park Chili Festival, and the Dixie Classic Fair. In total, for 2019, the group participated in 17 events. They also provide demonstration events for organizations; visit their website for more information.

Yes, indeed, they’re a busy group, having fun and promoting their art! They also love some friendly competition. They issued a challenge to the Piedmont Woodcarvers of auldin, SC to see which club could enter the most carvings in the Charlotte Woodcarvers Showcase of Woodcarvings (the largest show in the Southeast), scheduled for February 22nd-23rd, 2020. ake plans to visit the show and cheer on our local, talented artisans!

Triad Woodcarvers provides instruction for high school homeschoolers, so that they have an art option in their studies. They developed the program earlier this spring, with a master carver directing the 13-session program. They’ve already received a request for a second semester. They plan to showcase the students’ creations later in their school year.

Interested in Giving Woodcarving a Try? Come to one of the Triad Woodcarvers meetings. No need to bring anything, just your interest. The club provides tools, wood, patterns, basic instructions on safety, tools, and how to get started. Classes are free and include up to four weeks of lessons. Learn about different carving techniques chip carving, relief carving, wood burning, cottonwood-bark carving, carving in the round, painting.

Join the Triad Woodcarvers at one of their regularly scheduled meetings. They meet weekly each onday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the iller Park Community Center (400 Leisure Lane, Winston-Salem). It doesn’t matter whether you have any experience in the art of wood carving, you’re welcome, and they’re happy to teach you their art.

Why Chores Matter

While

not many enjoy doing household chores, these tasks are vital for a home to run smoothly and efficiently.

Although for the most part, the adults of the house take on the larger responsibilities, there are plenty of smaller tasks that also need attention. Who better to take on these everyday jobs than our children?

Although as a mother, I can easily see the benefit for assigning household tasks, not all parents agree with me. Numerous parents want their kids to enjoy their childhood, free of the burdens of adult duties. Others may see their children as being less capable of properly completing the needed jobs. They worry that the laundry will get messed up, or the dishes will not be put back in the correct place. Regardless of the opinions, why should one consider assigning chores to their tikes? Read on for six reasons explaining the strong benefits for assigning children chores.

Reason #1:

Chores help build a hard-work ethic. Having a strong work ethic is a value needed in the real world by teachers and bosses. Why not instill this ethic into a child at a young age One can choose to reward their child with an allowance. This can teach children that a job well done leads to a reward, sparking their entrepreneurial spirit. Ultimately, this can have a snowball effect, where these children seek a job once they are a teen, then eventually as an adult.

Reason #2:

Chores help children gain self-esteem. There is nothing better for a child than feeling the praise of an adult. This praise helps instill self-esteem in children, which can later lead to productive adults. Multiple studies have shown that kids who help at home are more confidant, resilient, and compassionate. Ultimately, these children will do better in school, and grow up into more successful young adults.

Reason #3:

Teamwork begins with chores. A child’s family is their first true “team.” With this said, the lesson of why one should strive to be a productive member

of a team can be taught early on. Consider this, if all members of your family “team” are accountable to each other, there can be consequences when you don’t meet each other’s expectations.

Learning these lessons at home, where mistakes are more easily forgiven, can help kids develop strong teamwork skills to use at school or work.

Reason #4:

Time management can be taught. In the real world, one does not have the luxury of turning in an assignment, or meeting a deadline, “when they feel like it.” Why not teach children time-management skills early on When older kids learn how to juggle household chores with their other duties like homework and sports this helps them set their priorities and manage time. In the end, this helps kids develop into time-honoring adults.

Reason #5:

espect can be reinforced. When a child is required to pick up his or her room, or wash the dishes, they begin to gain insight into all the other tasks their parents perform. Kids will later become more aware of the messes they make if they’re tasked with cleaning up around the house. In the end, they learn to respect the hard work that goes into maintaining a home.

Life skills can’t always be taught at school. While math, English, science, and history are all readily taught at area schools, the household tasks needed to run a successful home are not. Requiring children to complete certain tasks helps teach them these jobs. Chores like laundry, vacuuming, loading the dishwasher, and feeding the pets are skills that everyone needs in their life. Why not teach these to younger generations early on?

to set outside your post office. Always remember to ask the owner or manager of the place of business if you can put something out, before doing so.

• Start a piggy bank and donate the money to your favorite cause.

This act is a great way to get your family and children involved.

All the loose change that drops between the sofa cushions or is left in the laundry can be put into a jar. Then, after a certain period of time or amount, give the money to a nonprofit. You can also encourage your children to add money to the jar every so often.

• Tell someone what you like about them or something positive.

This can be for a loved one, stranger, or business. Everyone loves hearing good comments and that they are doing something right. This little action can start a chain reaction of positives. Post online, tell in person, or send a text or an e-mail.

Another option is to compliment a parent on how well-behaved their child is in public.

your calendars for Wednesday, November 13th, and plan to spread kindness to others! In fact, the day is officially called World indness Day. According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, one of the day’s purposes is to make kindness a norm for all ages. As stated in a blog post on the foundation’s website, Vice-President Brooke Jones says, “What if we started being intentional about not only noticing and absorbing the kind acts when they happen to us, but creating those moments for others What if we made it a point to go slightly outside of our comfort zone at least once a day to make someone smile What if we stopped thinking about them as random acts of kindness and started thinking about them as intentional acts of kindness?” Let’s get the ball rolling and start a kindness norm on November 13th and carry it on every day for generations. I’ve provided you with some ideas for random acts of kindness that all ages can do.

• Help out your neighbors by raking leaves, pushing their trash to the curb, or carrying in their bags after they have run errands.

• Paint positive messages on pumpkins, rocks, or paper and place in public sites. Create a kindness sign for your local coffee shop or spread a message of kindness on a pumpkin

• Think about random acts of kindness you and your family could do for the environment. Recycle, switch to paperless as much as possible, plant a tree, hang clothes out to dry instead of using the dryer, go vegetarian for a day, and ride a bike or walk are simple acts that can make a big impact on the environment over time. If you are looking for a bigger, immediate impact, try starting a community garden, hosting a clean-up at a park, school, or other public place.

• Complain less and be less judgmental. There is enough negativity in this world. Every day on the news, online, and in public, we hear people putting down others. Instead, we should lift them up by talking about the positives. Try to go a day without judging others and complaining. Then, add on another day and another day until you are free of negativity.

• Be spontaneous with your random act of kindness. Whenever you feel like it, and whatever action fits the time, carry out an act of kindness. Sometimes the best deeds come within the moment.

On November 13th, World Kindness Day, spread kindness to others, but don’t let this be the only day you spread kindness.

Use this day to move forward and make kindness a norm.

Thursday, September 26th, over 200 guests gathered at the illennium Center in owntown Winston-Salem for the annual Birthday Blast for the Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina. The Children’s Law Center was founded 14 years ago and has been a lifeline for children exposed to high-level conflict and violence in their own homes.

This year’s birthday blast was set into motion with entertainment provided by the Camel City Ja Orchestra. As guests mingled to the spirited entertainment, they enjoyed small bites and wine, donated by The Village Tavern and by ooster’s A Noble rille. A fabulous buffet dinner was provided by reg Carlyle of the illennium Center. Local favorite Dewey’s Bakery made the creative cake with the scales of justice as the topper, which was edible.

The Founding Leadership award was presented to Dean Suzanne Reynolds and the Volunteer Leadership award was given to Pollyann Holthusen. The evening’s Presenting Sponsor was Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, Entertainment Sponsor was BB&T and the Voice Sponsors were Penny & Bill Spry.

The Hospitality Chairs were Melanie Lawless York and Sandee & Mike Lawless. This year there was a new twist added, a Wine Pull in which every raffle ticket buyer won a bottle of wine. The Wine Pull committee was Emily Fletcher, Haley ellert and Jane organ Smith.

Harness the Power of Visualization

One

of the most powerful techniques used by successful people to reach their goals is visuali ation. What is it, how does it work, and can it work for you? Visualization is imagining a goal as already complete. It is the mental picture of yourself successfully completing a task or goal. When done with purpose, visuali ation taps into your subconscious mind, making it a powerful tool.

Research has shown that the human mind cannot distinguish between a real memory and one that is imagined with emotion. Mental practice through visualization can be as effective as real practice. Knowing this, you can harness visualization techniques to develop beliefs that lead to success. Elite athletes have been using visuali ation since the 1960s as a technique to improve their performance, but you don’t need to be an elite athlete to use visualization successfully to reach your goals.

Let’s break down how visualization can work for you. There are four important things to remember when creating a mental image of success. First, relax when creating the mental image of your successful accomplishment. When deeply relaxed, you can reach a light state of self-hypnosis, during which your visualization is impressed on your subconscious mind. Second, incorporate your emotions when picturing your success. Allow yourself to experience the emotions you believe you will feel when you actually succeed. Third, repeat the process of relaxing and seeing the picture of success in your mind. Repeated visualization increases your chances for success. And last, visualize your success in great detail. Imagine sounds, touch, environment, every detail of the event. Whether you are imagining yourself successfully performing a sport, cashing a check from a successful sale, managing the shop or office in which you work, or flawlessly performing an artistic event, visualization can move you closer to your goal.

images combine to create the successful future you imagine for yourself. Keep the vision board where you can see it daily and let the images sink into your subconscious mind. You can also create “flash” cards with positive affirmations written on them. These affirmations should encourage you to believe in your success and to perform the daily activities needed to reach your goals.

You can use the power of your brain, along with the power of visualization, to attain success.

Create the habit of performing these visualization techniques. Be consistent and dedicated to following the techniques in detail and you will be amazed at how you gravitate toward success!

Repeated visualization builds internal motivation and helps you override negative, limiting thoughts and beliefs. Your brain becomes programmed to seek out and recognize the resources you need to accomplish the imagined success.

As an example, suppose your goal is to become a successful public speaker. Your visualization exercise would involve picturing yourself speaking in front of a live audience. Do this exercise at a time when you can relax and focus, such as when you first wake up in the morning. Imagine the scene in minute detail, incorporating sight, sound, and touch. See the room, the podium, your notes, the audience.

Imagine the lighting and the sound equipment. Then imagine you are feeling confident, relaxed, and self-possessed as you face the audience.

Hear yourself speaking in a confident voice. See the audience listening carefully to your every word. Then hear the applause when you are finished, and experience a great sense of accomplishment.

In addition to the repeated exercise of relaxing and imagining in detail your desired success, you can boost the power of visualization by creating a vision board, a collage of visual images cut from magazines and collected on a poster board. These

Improv Theatre for Kids

It’s

no secret that kids love the arts.

Some will tell you immediately: they are ready to jump up in front of the room, show off their painting, and are over the moon for pipe cleaners, paint, and colored pencils.

The same with the dramatic arts: aside from the class performer who is always looking for a moment to hop up on stage, theatre is a great way to expose young people to difficult situations, and can easily tap the shyest student when the emphasis is on the process and rehearsal over the end product.

Improv Theatre (improvisational theatre) is no exception, and in my opinion, has far more positive outcomes.

As a teaching artist, I can safely say that Improv has some of the best results with all kinds of kids, not just the ones that love the arts. Since Improv is all about listening and responding, the focus is on paying attention, not on reading comprehension, which can often stress the most confident kid.

Improv brings out three major skills in almost every child: PUBLIC SPEAKING Yes, your seven-year-old won’t be hopping in front of a board meeting any time soon.

They might be nervous answering questions in class, though. Since Improv is all about just going for it, saying what you notice and having fun, students are building comfort speaking up!

When kids feel comfortable in the wild world of Improv, making things up as they go along and speaking up in front of a group of peers, that skill can do a lot for the ability to answer questions in class.

HONING CREATIVITY Kids are amazing. They can come up with the zaniest ideas, situations, and problems.

Improv hones that off-the-wall creativity into a tight beam of light. With Improv, kids get to be off-the-wall with what they create and come up with. They do need to remember what they create and build on that.

No matter how any the situation say they’ve created a land made of candy with giant lollipops as trees, and a dentist is

coming to destroy the democracy of sugar. As wild and wonderful as this is, everything created needs to be part of this candy- land reality.

Sure, it can be a bit of anything, but there’s a jumping-off point and a basic outline: candy land and dentist takeover, and everything needs to connect.

This honing of creativity only serves to help those moments of “thinking outside the box” in a focused way.

CONFIDENCE IS KEY The winning side effect?

Confidence. I still remember one of my students at Summit Elementary when I was directing the third-grade improvised play.

He was a vampire, and I had to coax him every single rehearsal and performance to speak up. He kept going, though, and I’m not sure if it happened that summer during camp or shortly after in after-school class, but one day, it just clicked and he became this outspoken and confident kid that never had to be told to speak up.

That same young man is in the 6th grade now, and every time I see him, I’m reminded of what Improv can do.

There’s no magic formula here, aside from the confidence that comes from failing without consequences. Kids (and adults) fail a lot in Improv no matter how long they’ve been practicing. The difference in failing during Improv and failing anywhere else: you are encouraged to get comfortable with mistakes. If you’re comfortable with mistakes, you quickly become comfortable with positive risk taking.

The only caution I offer with introducing Improv to kids: don’t focus on the final product. The joy and the progress comes with learning, experimenting, and failing during the process.

While it may seem that all food causes gas, that notion is not entirely false. as is a natural outcome of eating; however, to reduce pressure, consider smaller portions, steaming vegetables, and avoiding greasy, or high-sodium meals.

CHANGING HABITS Water retention and bloating are two separate conditions. It is harmful to the body to eliminate water intake from a diet to help prevent bloating. The body needs water to dissolve nutrients, eliminate waste, and aid systems to function correctly. When the body fails to release water, the result is water retention, usually connected to an increase of blood pressure on the capillaries. The irregular changes have a two-part affiliation poor eating habits and a potentially medical condition.

WHAT SHOULD I EAT AND DRINK? We all have choices. And, often, our hunger encourages poor decisions, such as reaching for cookies, potato chips, or an alcoholic beverage in the late evening. We find comfort in particular tastes. Alcohol, for instance, causes dehydration and inhibits digestion. And, since the body switches the processing from food to digesting alcohol, the result can leave you with a bloated, pained stomach. The better choice is water or tea.

Fluids which include natural herbal additives and no sugar are the absolute key for optimal digestion.

Dessert plates ease the temptation to consume every space with food. While it is a wise choice during holiday meals, it is a good idea for every day of the week!

• Bananas: Packed with potassium, which counteracts the effects of sodium and water retention, can help regulate belly bloating.

• High-Fiber: ather than eat a low source of fiber found in white rice and bread, switch to whole wheat. Start eating more acorn squash, nuts, carrots, a variety of berries, and sprinkle chia and flaxseed into your meals.

• Take time to eat eggs for breakfast to promote energy.

• Coffee lovers may not like the suggestion; however, consider drinking Chai tea, which settles the digestion.

• Eat a small-portioned meal every three hours to fulfill your hunger. Try apples dipped in peanut butter, hummus on vegetables, or yogurt with granola.

• Allow your body to digest the evening meal; therefore, if possible, eat early.

• Avoid actions that cause air to be swallowed, such as chewing gum, drinking through a straw, or eating quickly.

Some of our favorite greens, such as asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, contain a sugar termed raffinose.

Although it creates a healthy bacterium to help break down and digest foods, the greens also cause intestinal gas.

put your hardest, most passionate work into this project. You believe it is one of your greatest ideas yet! Your talents and uniqueness combined have birthed what you believe is a tremendous end product and will grant you recognition along with a promotion or a new opportunity.

The moment of truth has arrived. Your heart beats with anticipation as you get prepared to embark on a new journey. But then, something unexpected happens. You get passed over. You are told in so many ways your ideas or your project weren’t good enough. The opportunity goes to someone else who, perhaps, didn’t put in the same amount of perspiration as you.

You didn’t get the promotion you waited so long for. You feel defeat hover over you like a dark storm cloud and wonder, “What have I done wrong?” You wonder what is next for you as you contemplate whether or not it’s worth putting in all that hard work again.

Failure is not a good feeling, and we’ve all experienced it at some point in our lives to some degree. The scenario above may apply to many situations in which failure happens: a final academic exam, a job interview, a social experiment, disappointing others, or a failed business.

It can hurt so badly and keep us down for a long time. Failure can make us feel defeated, and if we’re not strong enough,

it can eat away at our confidence and self-worth. But what’s most important in times like this is how we look at failure and how we respond to it.

Would you believe that failure is a vital part of the success formula? Look at it this way: Determination + hard work + failure x passion x (willingness to learn) 2 S CCESS. Something as negative as failure can be used as an advantage for our lives. It is something that can propel us forward towards greatness. Do you have that one friend who isn’t necessarily the nicest, but always tells you the hard truth and gives the soundest advice? In the same way, failure helps us evaluate ourselves in several ways.

We recogni e our mistakes. We cannot be perfect beings who do everything correctly the first time; it is unnatural.

Whatever goal or aspiration we are working towards, we always have an action plan. But what we likely forget to include in that plan is willingness to learn from our failures and mistakes.

Mistakes are one of the greatest things that can happen to us in life. This sort of failure only points us toward our biggest

mistakes and when we find what we did wrong or what went wrong our minds do a rewiring. Our failures help reroute us on our journey, and when we try new solutions, we lead ourselves towards eventual success. Put it this way: the greater the failure, the greater the wisdom we gain from it.

Try, try again. Life is all about perseverance. It’s all about learning, falling, teaching, and giving. When failure encounters us like a storm, we have two options: admit defeat and give up, or learn from that failure and try a different avenue that will take us further. The more we strive towards our goal, the stronger and wiser we become. We shouldn’t be afraid of failing again, because that mindset will keep us boxed in.

Fear of failure? This fear is quite common, especially in a social media era where most folks publically document every job promotion, A+ on a physics test, marriage, or new car they get. The idea here is we cannot fear something as inevitable as failure. One of the best ways to overcome a fear of failure is to see what it teaches you and how it makes you better. Look at failure in a positive way, “Okay, this idea didn’t work out, but this is a learning experience for me and an opportunity to become more effective in life.”

Know that failure is something we all can rise above and learn profoundly from!

Humans,

no matter what their age, are expressive beings. Hand gestures expand on the thought, such as displaying the vast size of an object, emphasizing an emotion by blowing a kiss or showing directional actions through pointing. The signal may identify the value of a particular point, or, like a shrug, the need for more time to think. Despite our occasionally feeling self-conscious by it, the expressive use of hands resonates energy and warmth toward the listener.

Before the arrival of speech, babies and toddlers depend upon expressive communication. The practice of exercising the hands not only promotes hand-eye coordination, but develops a strong vocabulary, sentence structure, and storytelling capacity. Through a study to determine how hand gestures foster communication, findings revealed that children formed clearer thoughts to structure a narrative more concisely with each passing year. In a culture emphasizing iPads and finger sweeps, children can also balance their time by playing clapping games with siblings and friends.

Thankful We

are now fully ensconced in the fall season and all it brings. Halloween with its skeleton, witch and ghost decorations will be replaced with turkeys and pilgrims. Fall leaves with their brilliant colors are here, but will soon start dropping like the temperature. The cooler weather has me cooking soups and heartier fare, which I had abandoned during the hot summer months. And, of course, our country celebrates the wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving.

I have always known it to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month, but until 1942, the date varied.

Originating as a harvest festival, Thanksgiving was celebrated off and on starting in 1789. It became a national holiday in 1863 during the American Civil War and was to take place on the last Thursday in November.

Most of us express our gratefulness and thankfulness on more than just this one day, but it is a great time to remind our grandchildren that there are a multitude of blessings we should be acknowledging, besides the obvious ones.

We ask for blessings on our food, our family and our country. rowing up, our dinner blessing asked us to “be ever mindful of the needs of others.” My parents were wonderful in their example of this. My sister and I learned early on what even a small gesture of kindness could mean to someone. I am thankful for the many life lessons I was taught. Many of these will be passed on by my children. My grandchildren will grow up with this same sense of being aware of how fortunate they are and the joy they get from helping others. I love the quote, “You will never regret being kind.”

My father-in-law started a tradition with our family one Thanksgiving that we have continued for more than 30 years. While sitting at the dinner table, he handed each of us a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. We were to write down what we were thankful for. After we finished, he handed us an envelope to put it in, had us seal it and put our name on it. We did not read them out loud. The

following year, he handed us another piece of paper and envelope, and the one from the previous year. We reread what we had written the year before and could share them if we so chose to. It was interesting to remind ourselves what we were thankful for each year. It was especially enlightening to hear what our children had written and how their answers changed and matured.

Although I am sure I was aware of it from a young age, it often occurs to me that we ASK for blessings. It is there when we recite certain prayers “Bless this food ,” “Bless our dear ones ,” “Bless all those ,” etc., but we IVE thanks. It is a concept I want my grandchildren to understand and take to heart. It is fine to ask for help in prayer, but it is also important to be thankful, not only for what we receive, but for what we already have, as well.

This Thanksgiving, while enjoying the parades, the football games, the incredible amounts of food and being with family and friends, we need to express our thankfulness to the One who has bestowed on us our good fortunes and the beauty that surrounds us. Even in troubling times, we can find things to be thankful for.

Spending time with our grandchildren is a wonderful time to express our gratitude for our abundance of blessings.

I like to tell mine something I am thankful for and then start a back-and-forth, getting a response from them and giving another example back. This can lead to some interesting discussions and insight.

Whatever this season brings you, may you be blessed and thankful!

WINSTON-SALEM’S WEIL NAMED BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR DASH’S SECOND-YEAR VOICE HONORED BY HIS PEERS

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Joe Weil, the play-by-play broadcaster for the Winston-Salem Dash, has earned the Carolina League’s eighth-annual Broadcaster of the Year award. Weil received the most votes among the league’s lead broadcasters and broadcast assistants.

Weil, 26, has been a member of the Dash’s broadcast team since the 2016 season. The Boston University graduate took over as the lead broadcaster prior to the 2018 season. Before joining the Dash’s organization, Weil was a broadcaster for the Falmouth Commodores of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League in 2015.

In addition to his duties with the Dash, Weil has worked as a studio host at Learfield IMG College, which is based in Winston-Salem. He has been on the air for a pair of National Championship games in college basketball—Villanova in 2016 and Gonzaga in 2017. The Summit, N.J., native currently serves as the radio pregame, halftime and postgame host for Notre Dame football.

“This award is a tremendous honor, and I am humbled that my peers have chosen me as the league's Broadcaster of the Year,” said Weil. “All of the voices in the Carolina League are extremely dedicated and talented, so it means a lot to receive this distinction. I Hear the Train A’Comin’

What

do you think of when you hear a train whistle or see the safety arms go down across a road, so a train can continue its journey? Do you think of things like the economy, travel, or adventure?

Trains have been part of American history for centuries. We studied about the push to connect the East and West Coasts of the country by rail in history classes. The development of the mighty locomotives encouraged boom towns, because they were a stop along the way; and, in contrast, small towns were bypassed and never recovered, simply by not being part of the trains’ routes.

Trains have long had a direct impact on our economy.

So, what do trains do for us?

DELIVER FREIGHT Trains carry pretty much anything you can imagine: • 70 of the coal used to power approximately 78 of American homes is moved by rail. According to statistics, in 2018, 44 million carloads were transported.

• Food and agricultural products get to their destinations from farm to grocery counters. Each year, around 1.5 million carloads of food and 1.5 million carloads of grain products are transported by rail.

• The construction industry relies on trains to move materials (lumber, steel, sand, stone, and gravel) to worksites around the country.

• The automotive industry receives parts and raw materials to build

cars and trucks by rail. Around 75 of completed cars and trucks are transported from factories to destinations around the country. It’s quite a sight to see a train hauling multi-stacked shiny, new cars down the tracks carload by carload.

From that box of cereal that ends up on your kitchen table to hazardous materials that must have special safety/ security handling trains haul it all.

TRAVEL BY TRAIN loved porters, dining cars with linens, sleeper cars, viewing cars with wide windows to enjoy the scenery go by all the trappings of the luxurious mystique of traveling by train. That was the train travel of yesterdays. But, never fear, traveling by train is still popular and retains that certain air of luxury.

Did you know that it’s possible to travel cross-country for less than $300 That is, if you travel by rail. Visit Amtrak.com and check out all the options available to see the country from the comfort of a train, along with the amenities that are offered on each trip.

FOR EXAMPLE...

The California Zephyr travels approximately 3,000 miles coast-tocoast over three days for about $232 per person. The trip covers some of the first transcontinental routes and is a great way to see the country up-close.

The Southwest Chief travels from Chicago to Los Angeles via the Santa Fe railroad, along the famous Route 66. The route goes through Navajo country and offers an option to visit the rand Canyon.

The Empire Builder begins in Chicago and ends in Seattle/Portland. Travelers get to view the lacier National Park and the mountains of Washington State along the route.

ENTERTAINMENT Perhaps this seems a bit out of place, but take a look at some of the entertainment genres that feature trains prominently...

• Songs about trains cover almost every type of music you can name. Consider the classic “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash, just one of his many songs about trains. Or, “The City of New Orleans” (Arlo uthrie), “Last Train to Clarksville” (The Monkees), “Peace Train” (Cat Stevens), “ idnight Train to eorgia” (Neil iamond), “Chattanooga Choo-choo” ( lenn iller), or “Homeward Bound” (Simon & arfunkel).

• For movies from suspense to murder to comedy, how about The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Murder on the Orient Express, or Planes, Trains and Automobiles?

• And, let’s not forget books. Children’s classics such as The Little Engine That Could, Thomas the Train, or The Polar Express (which was also adapted to film). As for thrillers, Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie is a classic.

Our love affair with trains goes way back in our history. It’s nostalgic, adventurous, and a fun way to see the country. Think about a train trip in your future!

How to Treat Your Kids without Spiking their Sugar

BY TABI FALCONE how similar to ice cream you want it to be. If you’re happy with the temperature of normal yogurt, just eat it right away and enjoy. If you like it a little colder, throw it into the fridge to taste.

GRILLED APPLES INGREDIENTS: Apples Cinnamon Nutmeg Dash of lemon juice DIRECTIONS: Core and slice your apples so they are still chunky enough not to slip through the grill slats. Putting them into a mixing bowl, add a dash of lemon juice and toss until coated.

Then add cinnamon and nutmeg (to taste) and toss until coated. Dump onto a medium heated grill and cook, turning periodically until slightly soft and charred. Serve warm, either stand-alone or with a small amount of vanilla ice cream.

PRO TIP: If you grill enough apples to have leftovers, these are a great addition to an oatmeal breakfast.

“WARM ICE CREAM” INGREDIENTS: 1 cup plain or vanilla Greek yogurt 2 Tbs. peanut butter ¼ cup dark chocolate chips DIRECTIONS: Thoroughly combine the Greek yogurt and peanut butter until the mixture is completely smooth. Add in your chocolate chips and mix thoroughly.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER BANANA BITES INGREDIENTS: Bananas Peanut Butter Baking chocolate—preferably dark chocolate DIRECTIONS: Start by slicing ¼” pieces of banana, and then place them onto a tray covered in wax paper. Place these in the freezer for about 5 minutes to chill. Then make little sandwiches out of the slices by spreading peanut butter onto one and then placing another on top of it. When these are all complete, melt your chocolate.

This can be done with a double boiler (which is the preferred method) or very carefully in the microwave in 15-minute increments. Using a fork to help stabilize, dip all of your peanut butter banana sandwiches into your chocolate and place back onto the wax paper. Place into the fridge or freezer until the chocolate has set back into a hard state. These can be eaten either refrigerated or frozen— the choice is entirely up to you!

FRUIT AND CHOCOLATE HUMMUS INGREDIENTS: Fruit or pretzels of your choice for dipping 1 can garbanzo beans ¼ cup peanut butter One-eighth cup honey or agave One-eighth cup milk of your choice 3 Tbs. cocoa powder Salt to taste DIRECTIONS: In a blender, add all of the ingredients listed, and blend on high until a hummus consistency has been achieved. You may need to stop a few times to scrape the sides of the blender down, and add extra milk if necessary, to give the right consistency. Scoop into a bowl and then use as a dip for your favorite fruits or pretzels.

“STICK ‘EM UP!”

“I want everyone everywhere to lift their hands toward heaven and pray….” ~ 1 Timothy 2:8 Have you ever seen an old cowboy movie? When the good guy caught the bad guy, he shouted, “Stick ‘em up!” The bad guy had to drop his gun and lift his empty hands toward the sky. That showed he was giving up. Can you think of some other times when people lift their hands into the air?

Little kids lift their arms when they want to be picked up. When choosing teams to play a game, you might raise your hand in the air and call out, “Pick me! Pick me!” When a favorite team scores, some people jump up and wave their arms in the air, cheering as loudly as they can! When your teacher asks a question, do you raise your hand if you know the answer?

The Bible talks about lifting your hands, too. You have probably heard someone say, “Fold your hands and bow your head.” Bowing your head is one way to pray, but lifting your hands can be prayer, too. It’s a way to say, “Thank you,” or “I give up, God. I can’t seem to get it right.”

Psalm 134 tells us to lift up our hands “in the holy place.” That holy place isn’t just church. Wherever you are, when you talk to God, that place is holy.

When you’re outside and see something super cool, you can lift your hands and say, “Thank you, Lord!” When you’re feeling sad or lonely or sick, you can ask God to make things all better.

Don’t save praying and praising for church. Wherever you are, you can always “stick ‘em up” and know that God is right there with you!

Devotion: Thanks in Advance

you ever thanked someone, in advance, for something? You may have even used the abbreviation TIA. “Thanks in advance for your help with this!”

The context is usually that you’ve asked someone for a favor and you know that this person is most likely going to come through, so, you are showing your appreciation for what they are going to do, before they even do it.

For the majority of this year I have been praying for God’s favor in a situation that is filled with uncertainty. I know, in my heart, how I want things to turn out. But, I have no idea if what I want aligns with what God wants. I have done everything within my power to assure that things will work out the way I am hoping they will—the rest of it is out of my hands.

So, I pray about it. Daily. Sometimes, hourly.

What I have found challenging is figuring out how to pray. I could beg God like a kid in the candy aisle, “Pleeeeeeaaaasssseee give this to me, Daddy!” But that seems pretty immature and short-sighted. Or, I could pray with maturity and stoicism, “Father, your will not mine, I accept whatever outcome you allow.” While that is a mature and admirable way to pray, it is not an honest reflection of how I truly feel, and I think God wants my sincerity over my attempts at sounding holy.

is a special time when we gather together to break bread and count our many blessings. First Chronicles 16:34 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

As Christians saved by grace, our Thanksgivings should far surpass our material abundance alone.

We are so much more thankful for the precious gifts that money cannot buy, such as our health, a loving family and good friends who surround us.

In a troubled day and age, where our religious liberties are under attack, we also give thanks to God for the freedom to worship and for our pastors who boldly speak the truth and power of the gospel.

Will you “Be the One!” this Thanksgiving season to let your pastors know how thankful you are for their faithful leadership and commitment to preach and teach—no matter the cost? Your encouragement may come at just the right time!

I was having one of those “How-do-I-pray-about-this?” moments, when I asked God, “Lord, how do I pray about this?”

That’s when the phrase “Thanks in advance” came to mind.

And, that’s perfect, really. When I bring this situation to God, I can thank him in advance for hearing my prayers, for knowing the outcome, for wanting what is best for me, and for whatever the future holds, because His will and plans are perfect.

Try thanking God in advance for what he is going to do, remembering these words from Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. When Love Is Present

few weeks ago, my former intern was in town and called me. We met for lunch, and I was so happy to see her before she went back to college for her Junior year! (I could swear I was just at her high school graduation!) As is often the case with us, our talk turned to writing. As we talked, I told her of a topic that’s been on my mind for a long time. It’s based on a pet peeve of mine. So here we go….

The topic is about “loved.” Note—past tense. When someone talks about someone who died or even a recent breakup, they may say, “I lovED them so much!” (I’m emphasizing the past tense.)

Why do we talk about love as if it “was” instead of as it “is?”

Y’all, my grandfather died in 2011, and my grandmother died a year ago this month. I still love them. That love isn’t past.

It’s very much present.

I’m reminded of the final scene from the movie Ghost. Patrick Swayze’s character, Sam, says, “It’s amazing, Molly. The love inside, you take it with you.” And while this is a Hollywood moment, I can’t help but believe they got this one right.

Let’s visit the parable of the rich man and poor man (Lazarus) from Luke 16:19-31. The rich man, agonizing in hell, calls out to Abraham to send Lazarus some relief. Abraham explains that the rich man has received his comfort on earth, and he is beyond help. In verses 27-28, the rich man says, “Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house—for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment” (ESV).

the rich man is dead, past the reach of help, yet his care is in the present.

Is it because we treat love with a cavalier attitude? After all, we love ice cream, and we love our children. We use the same term to refer to a temporary sweet fix as we do to the very flesh and blood of our bodies.

I’m not judging. I do it, too. But the past tense issue—that’s the one that really gets under my skin.

As Mallory and I talked about this topic, she referred to John 3:16, and asked me how I felt about the past tense usage there. It’s different, I told her. It doesn’t insinuate a diminished emotion when it says, “For God so lovED the world...” That past-tense usage explains the purpose of Christ’s death on the cross as payment for our sins.

I told her that I go back to the verse that says, “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19 ESV). We love (present tense) because God showed us what true love looks like when He loved us enough to send Jesus to die for us.

We skip down to verse 21, which reads, “And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother” (ESV).

“But Denise, you may argue—the rich man is in hell! What about his love?” Note the distinction in the phrase, “whoever loves God” (present tense) from 1 John 4:21.

What strikes me is a point I don’t know that I’ve ever heard mentioned...the dead man who was anguishing in torment had enough emotion to care about—dare we say “love”?— his brothers. So much so that he asked for someone to go to them and warn them, so they could escape his fate.

We can also refer to Matthew 7:11, when Jesus says, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him?” (ESV). Even those who don’t know God can love someone else and care for them. It’s the Christian’s love for God that is the difference.

I’m speculating, and there may be a theological perspective that says those who suffer in hell would warn their worst enemy. I’m sure that’s true. But the story doesn’t say that the rich man asked for Lazarus to be sent to all his friends and the rest of humanity. He singled out his brothers.

All this to say—love, real love, doesn’t have an expiration date. Just as God is everlasting (Psalm 90:2), He is also love (1 John 4:8). And as we are made in His image (Genesis 1:26), we are made with the capacity to love. And with that in mind, let us live (and love) accordingly, as it says in 1 John 4:11, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (ESV). Loved as an example; love in the present.

The Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8). Jesus modeled overwhelming love for us when He suffered and died on the cross. And because of that love, we know that true love never dies and it never ends.

The season of Thanksgiving

“O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: because His mercy endures forever.’” ~ Psalm 118:1 This year, as we observe our season of thanksgiving, let us be grateful not only in word but also in deed. Let our gratitude find expression in a resolve to live a life more unselfish and more consecrated to Jesus Christ. When we sit around our tables this year, laden with sumptuous delicacies, let us not forget that half the world will go to bed hungry. As we enjoy the comforts of our cozy homes, let us not forget that great numbers in other parts of the world have no homes to go to. When we step into our sleek automobiles, let us not forget that most people in the world cannot afford even a bicycle.

In the Lord’s Prayer, we read: “Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11). Scripture teaches that the good things of this life are the gifts of God, and that He is the donor of all our blessings.

Thanksgiving? Yes. We all have a lot to be thankful for. If you belong to Jesus, you should be thanking Him every single day for the opportunity you have to follow Him. He has done much for us and He wants to do so much more!

Many times in life we can look at a glass as half empty or half full. Listen to this from an unknown author. It’s called “THINGS I’M THANKFUL FOR.” • The mess to clean up after a party, because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

• The piles of laundry and ironing, because it means my loved ones are nearby.

• Weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day, because it means I have been productive.

• The taxes I pay, because it means that I’m employed.

• The alarm that goes off in the early morning hours, because it means that I’m alive.

• The clothes that fit a little too snugly, because it means I have enough to eat.

• The Old Rugged Cross, because it means my faith is in Jesus Christ.

• My shadow who watches me work, because it means I am out in the sunshine.

• My huge heating bill, because it means I am warm.

Let us get on our knees humbly and thank God for the blessings He has given us, both material and spiritual. They have come from His kind and merciful hand.

But let’s not just pray however, let’s do something. How about we step up this month and pay it forward by giving food and other essentials to Crisis Control, Samaritan Ministries, or the Salvation Army? How about a monetary donation towards any charity that helps find real solutions to poverty or helps build communities for the less fortunate? There is so much we can do to demonstrate our thankfulness to a generous God. When we act in this way, we let the “Son” shine.

• The lady behind me in church who sings off-key, because it means that I can hear.

Laurie and I hope you and your loved ones enjoy a happy Thanksgiving this year!

Wondrous Winter Squash

Available to mid-winter, these versatile vegetables are as delicious as they are nutritious. You can bake, sauté, roast, and puree squash, and you can dress it up with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon, or whatever fixings please your palette.

Squash is on your side—it keeps you well hydrated, fights free radicals, helps protect from sun damage and prevents signs of aging. A powerhouse replete with complex carbs, dietary fiber, essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, squash is known to improve insomnia, soothe inflammation, protect heart health, help prevent cancer, manage diabetes symptoms, and much more. These babies nourish from within, boost your health, and help you look your best.

Soups, pies, casseroles, breads, muffins, custards, salads, and pastas (think outsidethe- box recipes, such as butternut squash ravioli) are all versatile dish options. Try a wide array of different squashes, including yellow, butternut, acorn, spaghetti, turban, delicata, Hubbard, sweet dumpling, blue Hokkaido pumpkin, Calabaza and Kabocha.

WAYS TO COOK/BAKE YOUR SQUASH Cut the squash in half, scoop out the seeds and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes, or until you can pierce it easily with a fork. When your squash is tender, the skin should peel off easily. And, don’t throw those seeds away; they can be roasted, too!

In addition to roasting, squash can also be sautéed, mashed and pureed. You can also steam, boil and microwave squash.

Squash is even great raw, too. Try grating it over your greens, or mix it in a slaw with cabbage and apples, and top with a vinaigrette.

What to dress your squash up with? Try extra virgin olive oil, butter, spices (like cumin, cinnamon and nutmeg), brown sugar, herbs (like rosemary and thyme),

salt and pepper, honey, maple syrup, Parmesan or Romano grated cheese and marinara (for spaghetti squash).

4. Remove from oven and let cool about 5 minutes, then slice log into individual cookies about ½ inch thick.

Want to save some for later? Squash can easily be stored in the refrigerator or freezer.

5. Return cookies onto baking sheet and bake for approximately 8 minutes. Take out of oven, turn cookies over with a spatula and bake about 8 more minutes.

Take out of oven and let cool.

It just wouldn’t be fall without butternut squash soup, which is delicious with a sprinkling of Parmesan or Romano or grated white cheddar cheese. Try these other recipes to bring winter’s wondrous squash to your table: PUMPKIN PECAN BISCOTTI Perfect for dunking; treat yourself to this fall treat!

INGREDIENTS: 2¾ cups flour ¾ cups white sugar ¼ cup brown sugar 1½ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground ginger 2 eggs ½ cup pumpkin puree 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ cup finely chopped pecans 1 Tablespoon maple syrup DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk together dry ingredients until thoroughly mixed.

2. In a different bowl, stir wet ingredients together and add the pecans. Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix together until a stiff dough is formed.

Divide dough in half and roll into a log about 10 inches long and 2 inches wide.

Place log onto parchment paper.

3. Bake approximately 25-30 minutes until lightly browned.

WINTER SQUASH SOUP INGREDIENTS: 2 Tablespoons butter 1 Tablespoon olive oil 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 large onion, chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped 2.5 pounds winter squash (such as acorn or butternut squash) peeled, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 Tablespoon honey 5 cups chicken stock Salt and pepper to taste Parsley (fresh), chopped for serving (optional) 3 dashes grated Parmesan or Romano cheese DIRECTIONS: 1. Melt butter in saucepan and cook onions and celery until soft (about 15 minutes).

2. Add squash and keep stirring (about 5 minutes).

3. Add honey and chicken stock and bring to a simmer, cooking until squash is tender.

4. Remove from heat and puree in blender.

5. Season to taste and garnish with parsley and cheese.

American Culinary Federation, ACF, understood the statistic of how many children in the United States suffer from malnutrition due to dietary imbalances.

Local master chef, Donald McMillian, initiated a North Carolina Chapter of the Chef and Child program. The vision to promote and foster awareness of proper nutrition allows the Chef and Child Foundation to team up with various organizations and help preschool and elementary children celebrate health and good food. During the summer months, the Chef and Child program offers a five-day kitchen readiness curriculum for children ages eight to twelve in Forsyth County and 22 other counties.

LEARNING TECHNIQUES Local chefs teaming up with groups of children sounds like the perfect partnership to ease the feeling of intimidation in using knives, small appliances, the range, and oven.

With kitchen safety a priority, master chefs engage groups to view the kitchen as a place of possibilities and creations.

Chef Romano delights in telling the story of a child who caught the spark and wanted to do more than cook in her family’s kitchen. Now, she is a chef in the business. Romano says, “I love giving back to the community and helping guide kids in the right direction in making good food choices and knowing how to eat healthily. It’s a great program, and I love being part of it.”

PUMPKIN CRESCENTS INGREDIENTS: 1 roll Pillsbury crescent rolls ½ cup canned pumpkin pie filling ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 egg yolk

CARAMEL PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE DIP

GLAZE: ½ cup powdered sugar 1 Tablespoon pure maple syrup ½-1 Tablespoon milk

INGREDIENTS: 11 oz. caramels One-third cup pumpkin spice creamer (such as International Delight brand) 8 oz. package of light cream cheese ¾ cup pure pumpkin puree (not pie filling) one-third cup brown sugar ½ tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice 8 oz. light whipped topping

DIRECTIONS:

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 374°.

2. In a medium bowl, combine pie filling, egg yolk and pumpkin pie spice.

3. Unroll and separate crescent roll dough and place 1 heaping tablespoon of pumpkin pie mix onto each crescent triangle.

4. Starting with the wide end, roll the crescent triangle over once and pinch the sides to contain the filling. Continue rolling (a little might leak out, but that’s okay) and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

5. Bake 10-12 minutes or until browned. Cool for 10 minutes.

6. In a small bowl, combine glaze ingredients until smooth. Place in a plastic sandwich bag. Snip a corner of the bag and drizzle the glaze onto the crescents. Serve warm.

1. Combine the caramels and creamer in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the caramels have melted and mixture is combined. Let cool 15 minutes.

2. Beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy. Mix in the pumpkin, brown sugar, vanilla extract and pumpkin pie spice until thoroughly combined.

3. Fold in the whipped topping.

4. Pour enough caramel sauce into the bottom of your serving bowl to cover the bottom. Spoon half of the pumpkin cheesecake mixture on top and smooth the surface. Drizzle on more caramel sauce, leaving just enough for the top of the dip.

5. Spoon on the remaining half of the pumpkin cheesecake mixture and smooth the top. Drizzle on remaining caramel. Serve with apple slices, graham crackers and gingerbread cookies.

PUMPKIN SPICE LUSH – NOBAKE LAYERED DESSERT INGREDIENTS: 2 11.3-oz. packages Pecan Sandies cookies 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, melted 2 (3.4 oz.) boxes pumpkin spice instant pudding* 2 cups 2% milk 4 tsp pumpkin pie spice 2 (16 oz.) containers whipped topping, thawed 1 cup pecans, chopped DIRECTIONS: 1. Spray a 9x13” glass baking dish with cooking spray.

2. In a large plastic bag, crush Pecan Sandies. Add melted butter and mix until moistened evenly.

Press into the bottom of the dish.

3. In a large bowl, whisk together the pudding mix, milk, and pumpkin pie spice until thick, about 1 minute. Fold in one of the containers of whipped topping until combined. Spread the mixture on top of the Pecan Sandies crust.

4. Top the pumpkin pudding layer with the remaining whipped topping and sprinkle with chopped pecans. Refrigerate 6 hours or until set. *NOTE: If you can’t find the pumpkin spice instant pudding mix (it’s seasonal), substitute with two 3.4-3.9 oz. boxes of instant vanilla pudding. Prepare with milk as directed and whisk in one to one-and-one-third cups pumpkin puree and 2-4 tsp pumpkin pie spice.

Come Celebrate Three Decades of the Triad’s ACC Team at LJVM Coliseum This Season

upcoming season Wake Forest University is celebrating 30 Years of Demon Deacon Basketball at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. There’s been lots of excitement, incredible NBA-caliber talent, phenomenal buzzer-beaters, and high-quality ACC and NCAA Tournament basketball played since the dedication ceremony was held on August 28, 1989. Wake fans will recognize some of the great names that have displayed their talent on the parquet floor of LJVM Coliseum, including Tim Duncan, Rodney Rogers, Randolph Childress, Josh Howard, Chris King, Darius Songaila, John Collins, Jeff Teague, Al-Farouq Aminu, James Johnson and, of course, our hometown hero himself, Chris Paul, just to name a few. Many of those players went on to make an impact in the NBA, including World Championships for one in particular. Of course, the coliseum has also been the host for superstars like Elton John, and the setting for Hollywood films such as Eddie (1996), starring Whoopi Goldberg, and The Longest Ride, (2015) based on Nicholas Sparks’ bestselling novel.

The namesake of this great sports facility is Lawrence Joel, a native of Winston-Salem who served as a medic in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor, displaying immense bravery while helping wounded soldiers on the battlefield. The monuments that stand at the entrance to the coliseum honor the Forsyth County veterans lost in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, and the Persian Gulf.

Head Coach Danny Manning and Director of Athletics John Currie are excited to get the ball bouncing on this new season of Demon Deacon Basketball. This year the ACC implements for the first time the 20-game conference schedule, which includes 10 home ACC games. The home season kicks off on Sunday, November 10th, when the Deacons host Columbia University from the Ivy League just before the Lions take part in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. Next up on Wednesday, November 13th, the Bulldogs of UNC-Asheville out of the Big South Conference come into Joel. After two games in Charlotte (UNCC and Davidson) and a trip out west for the Wooden Legacy Tournament in Anaheim, California, followed by a game at Penn State, the Deacons come back home to face the Wolfpack of NC State for their first ACC game on Saturday, December 7th. On Saturday, December 14th, it’s the Musketeers of Xavier out of the Big East, followed by the Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Saturday, December 21st.

Then the full ACC home schedule begins with Florida State (Wednesday, January 8th), Virginia Tech (Tuesday, January 14th), Boston College (Sunday, January 19th), and the 2019 NCAA National Champion, Virginia (Sunday, January 26th) to finish out the month of January. The February home slate includes Clemson (Saturday, February 1st), UNC (Tuesday, February 11th), Georgia Tech (Wednesday, February 19th), and Duke (Tuesday, February 25th). The final home game of the season and Senior Night is on Saturday, February 29th, against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

How Pizza Fridays Make Your Family Stronger

is a cornerstone to many middle-class American diets. Not only is it an important part of the diet, it is an important part of the family structure of many families. Pizza Fridays are universally enjoyed across almost all American families, often happening due to parents being too tired to cook by the end of the week, or to celebrate payday.

Many families just do pizza because everybody loves it, and they want one night a week where nobody is complaining about having to eat vegetables (although there are some pretty good pizzas that include vegetables as toppings!). We like to think of this in a positive spin, however, and focus on the family bonding that happens during these Pizza Fridays.

All families have their own traditions; this is a critical component of familial structures and is a cause of building strong bonds between people. Many of our family traditions are surrounding religious and cultural holidays, such as having a seven-fish dinner on Christmas Eve, if you have an Italian background, or breaking the

wishbone on Thanksgiving. While these family traditions are very clearly important; the more mundane traditions are actually significantly more important when it comes to building trust and bonds between people.

One important factor about the less celebrated, more common, traditions, such as pizza Fridays, is that they create consistency for children. Consistency and knowing that the same thing will happen every week can be a source of great comfort. Denise, a mother of seven, always made sure to have a Friday movie night with her husband and children, which they are now doing with their significant others and children.

Knowing that this would happen every single Friday built trust within their relationships that then spilled over into other portions of their lives. No matter how crazy or stressed-out their weeks were, her kids always knew that family movie night was a sacred night that was never subject to be taken away as a punishment. When asked why this was important, Denise states that “Family time is for bonding. Even if you’re just hanging out side by side watching movies, you’re still strengthening your relationship. That’s why it’s important never to remove family time or traditions like family movie night for bad behavior.

There’s actually an argument to be made that the worse the behavior, the more you NEED family time.”

These traditions give us a sense of belonging within our families. They are a shared experience between parents and children, and between siblings, that cross over through our lives. These experiences will be different for every family, as well, and that’s great. For pizza Fridays, you may choose to go out to eat pizza at a nice restaurant downtown and then finish off the evening by checking out the local art galleries and grabbing a gelato. You may choose to make your own individual pizza from scratch so that every family member can have their ideal toppings, and then eat it on your deck. You may choose to pick up, take out, and eat it in front of a movie in your pajamas. You may even choose to do all three of these, depending on how your week was and what you feel up to that evening. However you choose to celebrate pizza Friday, or whatever weekly family tradition you pick, the important thing is that you are consistent with the tradition and that you spend time together as a family.

This stability not only helps to create bonding within families, but it goes into all parts of a child’s development. Studies have shown that children who have stability and routines at home are more likely to excel academically and socially. An argument can also be made then that having pizza every Friday can even help your child become a better-adjusted human!

Get Baking with Delicious and Delectable Dishes for Fall

Colorful leaves are changing as the cool crisp weather is quickly getting chillier. It’s time to combat the cold by staying cozy indoors, and autumn is the perfect time to spend quality time in the kitchen, baking.

Bask by the warmth of your oven as you bake delicious and delectable dishes that make ideal fall treats for your tummy.

Enjoy the adventure solo, or share the baking venture with others.

BAKED APPLES INGREDIENTS: 4 baking apples (Jonagold, Golden Delicious, or Rome Beauty) ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup chopped pecans (optional) ¼ cup chopped walnuts (optional) 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg ½ teaspoon ground ginger 1 Tablespoon butter ¾ cup boiling water DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Use a paring knife to de-stem and carve out a hole in the top center of each apple, and cut out the seeds.

3. Place apples in a baking dish.

4. Combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then pack the apples with the mixture. Add butter slices atop each apple.

5. Pour water into bottom of the baking dish and cover with aluminum foil (optional).

6. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.

7. Serve warm and add vanilla ice cream (optional) for an extra-scrumptious treat!

Crumb Topping: � cup sugar � cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon cardamom 1 teaspoon allspice 2 cups flour ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350° Fahrenheit. Line muffin tin with liners.

2. Make the topping: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugars, spices and salt. Stir in melted butter and mix until crumbly.

3. In a separate mixing bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice.

4. Add pumpkin, eggs, butter, sour cream and vanilla, and mix until combined.

5. Pour batter into muffin liners. Top each muffin with the crumb topping.

6. Bake until muffins are golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean, about 20-25 minutes. Let muffins cool, then serve.

CHAI APPLE SPICE CAKE Wondering what spices typically make up chai? Ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, star anise, allspice and black pepper all make the list—and, if you’re a pumpkin spice fan, you can also add some pumpkin spice.

INGREDIENTS: Spice Cake: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup sugar 2 eggs

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Oil and flour an 8x8 inch baking pan.

3. Mix topping ingredients together with a fork. The mixture should form large, coarse clumps. Set aside.

4. In another bowl, sift the dry ingredients together: the flour, baking powder and baking soda.

5. In a separate bowl, beat butter until creamy, then add the sugar. Add the sifted flour mixture and buttermilk, alternating between the dry flour mixture and the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour. Add in vanilla and don’t over- mix.

6. Toss the chopped apples with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and allspice, then gently fold into the batter.

7. Pour batter into a baking pan, then crumble the topping over the batter, pressing gently to ensure the topping adheres to the batter.

8. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean with no batter sticking to it.

9. Allow the cake to cool and then serve.

Tips for the Very Best Thanksgiving Ever

My husband and I started dating two weeks before Thanksgiving, and this year marks the twenty-ninth time we have celebrated the holiday together.

Twenty-nine years of blended families and arguments over whether it’s called stuffing or dressing (it’s dressing, by the way), of monumental feasts and epic disasters. In this time I’ve learned a few things about family dynamics, and about how this holiday brings us together like a big, warm bowl of mashed potatoes. With gravy, of course.

Here are my tips on making this Thanksgiving one to remember: 1. Bring your big pants. If there is one day of the year when you can get up and have a huge breakfast at 8, followed by a brunch at 9, a “sample” of everything you’re cooking every hour on the hour, an early lunch at 11, appetizers at 1, a snack at 3, a full turkey dinner at 4, pie at 5, leftovers at 7, leftover pie at 9— THIS IS THAT DAY. Come prepared.

2. Try a little of everything. Even your Aunt Myrtle’s weird green bean thing.

Barring allergy or moral objections, put a spoonful on your plate and tell your Aunt Myrtle it’s fabulous.

3. It’s okay to buy something. I am notorious for wanting everything to be the result of my culinary wizardry, mostly because I have an ego that requires

constant reassurance from outside sources. But what I end up doing is absolutely killing myself in the kitchen and then getting resentful because I’ve had to do it all, after insisting that I do it all. Buy your bread or a pie or a side.

No one is going to go home talking smack about you if you didn’t grow the pumpkin yourself.

4. Delegate. I do most of the cooking, so when dinner is done I march my wellstuffed self to my well-stuffed couch and put my feet up. Magically, other people get up and clean my kitchen. They put things in the wrong containers and in the wrong cabinets and I absolutely do not care. I am happy they’re doing it, and I let them. When someone is kind enough to offer to bring something, I take them up on the offer. Even if it’s Aunt Myrtle and her weird green bean thing.

5. Don’t expect your kids to act like anyone other than your kids. They are not suddenly going to stop fighting, or running in the house, or hiding cheese in the bathroom (What? Like my kids are the only ones?), or insisting they won’t eat anything you spent the last four days preparing, because IT’S GROSS and WHERE ARE THE CHICKEN NUGGETS? because you have company. Let them enjoy the day, too.

6. Create a drama-free zone. Look, I don’t like your Aunt Myrtle, either. Everyone knows the only reason we still invite her is because she’s old and will probably be dead next year and we’d all feel guilty if we didn’t. She will complain that the turkey is dry and that’s not the way she makes the stuffing and you’re serving the pie too early. She will remind you that you’re part of the family through marriage, and criticize your housekeeping and weight, and suggest that maybe your children would be more polite if you wouldn’t coddle them. And then you could punch her in the face. OR, you could smile and nod and say horrible, horrible things about her in your head. It’s not the more satisfying route, but it’s the more charitable one.

7. Give thanks. No, really. Don’t make it a Pinterest event and make everyone write down their blessings and put them in a mason jar. Take a small moment with each person that you are fortunate to have around your table and let them know you’re thankful for them. A squeeze of the hand, a thank-you for being here, a thumbs up to Auntie M over a mouthful of green beans—be thankful, because you are. Because you have the good fortune to be in a warm place with a full belly and someone who loves you. What a gift.

PIE GUYS’ PIZZA AND MORE Celebrates 2 Years in Business

is nothing better than a good piece of pizza. There are a lot of places to get a pizza, but you can really taste the difference when the dough is fresh, and the ingredients are of high quality. There is a local pizza place that makes a great-tasting pizza, but you might not even know it is here. Pie Guys’ Pizza and More is celebrating two years of business in Kinnamon Village, and if you haven’t yet, it is time to give them a try.

Owner Robert Wiley has always wanted to start a pizza restaurant. He graduated from Appalachian State in 1991 with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management, and worked in the restaurant business for a few years. In 2001 he started working in real estate and did that successfully until 2017. It was always in the back of his mind that he would start a pizza restaurant, but in 2017 he decided it was time to make that dream a reality. On October 5, 2017, he opened up Pie Guys’ Pizza and More in Kinnamon Village.

The last two years have been great for the restaurant. In fact, in their second year of business, they saw a sales increase of 70%. However, they find that some people still don’t know that they are there. Wiley said, “The only problem that we have had as a new business is that our location sometimes confuses people. We have a Winston-Salem address, but we are actually in Clemmons. The Kinnamon Village Shopping Center on Highway 158, where we are located, is hidden behind some trees, so that can make it hard to find. We are so grateful to the loyal customers we have had since day one, but we just want everyone to have the chance to enjoy our food.”

At Pie Guys’ Pizza and More, the food is the star! Wiley spent two years perfecting his pizza dough before he opened up shop. He went on to say, “I bought a small pizza oven and a Kitchenaid Mixer I could use in my kitchen at home. I tried lots of different things before I got the recipe just right.” And get it right is what he did. They make the dough and sauce fresh in the shop daily. The ingredients used are high quality, including Grande Mozzarella and Fontanini Sausage and Meatballs. They offer a variety of pizzas, from build-your-own to specialty options. There is one specialty pizza, named the Graham Slam, named after Josh Graham from WSJS sports radio. This pizza has a buffalo sauce base and is topped with bacon, grilled chicken, and their cheese blend. There is also a gluten-free cauliflower crust option for only a $3.00 additional charge.

All pizzas come with their delicious honey cream sauce for crust dipping.

There is more than just pizza to enjoy when you come to Pie Guys’ Pizza and More. They have a nice selection of salads and sandwiches to choose from, as well as five different flavors of wings. If you are in the mood for a beer, you have several choices, including bottles from two

local breweries: Foothills and Red Oak. Make sure you save some room for dessert, too.

You will want to try them all. Not only do they have the mini-cannolis, they offer locally made gelato from Twin City Gelato and some excellent new signature desserts as well.

Pie Guys’ Pizza and More has created two new signature desserts made with their pizza dough, the Moravian Sugar Cake Pie, and Strawberry Cheesecake Pie. For the Moravian Sugar Cake Pie, general manager Ted Kimball tapped into his Moravian Roots. “I used my Mom’s recipe for a traditional Moravian Sugar Cake and adapted it to use with our signature pizza dough.” This dessert is topped with sweetened cream cheese, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon. The Strawberry Cheesecake Pie has a graham cracker crust, signature dough, sweetened cream cheese, and is topped with fresh strawberry puree.

Maple Banana Nut Muffins

BY SARA WILES We all need a banana bread recipe in our arsenal, right? I love tweaking my standard recipe by adding different kinds of nuts or adding in different flavors. Below you’ll see I added maple syrup instead of the traditional vanilla extract. Get creative!

INGREDIENTS:

4 overripe bananas

1. Peel the bananas. Mash them roughly with a fork, leaving some chunky pieces for texture. Place half of them in a KitchenAid fitted with the whisk attachment. Set aside the other half of the bananas.

1 cup sugar ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 cups flour 1½ teaspoons baking soda ½ teaspoon kosher salt ½ cup nuts, finely chopped (I recommend walnuts)

2. Add sugar to the KitchenAid, whip them together for 3 minutes until a frothy mixture forms. Add butter, eggs and vanilla. Mix together until combined. Add flour, baking soda, salt, remaining bananas and nuts. Stir until just combined. Be sure to not over mix.

3. Scoop the mixture into a muffin tin lined with muffin liners. Bake at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes until baked through. Serve with softened butter.
