August is here and I’m thrilled! This is the month we have taken our family vacation ever since the girls had gone off to college. But things are a little different this year, and so I was afraid it just might not work out! You see, we have two college graduates in our house now. One is a full-time nurse and newly engaged. The other is finishing her summer internship. However, to my utter delight, the planets aligned and the annual vacation is indeed on!

I’ll get to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of my little piece of heaven on earth after all, Treasure Island, Florida! It has become our favorite beach destination over the last several years and so happy to be headed there again. I feel so blessed that our children still want to vacation with us. It is no doubt my happy time! Sadly, our dear friends Brian and Sandy are not able to join us this year, but hopefully we can get back on track next summer!

While August may mean vacation for our family, it also means the start of school for Forsyth County children.

This issue has many back-to-school- related articles that we hope will help make the transition a little easier! If you live in the Lewisville-Clemmons area, be sure to stop by Sunrise UMC on your way to school those first days for a FREE drive-thru breakfast. You never even have to get out of your car! Read more about it on page 78. The August cover features the great folks at Forsyth Family Eye Care (previously Old Town Eye Care). Their brand-new office just sparkles, and with kids returning to school, it’s a good reminder that your child’s vision may need to be checked.

Often times that is when children’s vision problems are first recognized. I remember taking the note home to my parents in third grade and have had corrective lenses ever since!

I wanted to be sure and mention a special thank-you to Sunrise UMC Youth. We sure enjoyed our mission trip to Columbus, Georgia, with you back in June. Despite the 100+ temps, you worked hard and shared the love of Jesus with those around you. How blessed are we to have such caring, young folks in our community!

BRING THE KIDS TO THE WINSTON-SALEM OPEN!

T

here’s more than tennis at the Winston-Salem Open, which takes place August 22nd −29th at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex adjacent to BB&T Field. The fifth year of the Winston-Salem professional tennis tournament will offer plenty of activities for the whole family, beginning with Brenner Children’s Kids’ Day on Saturday, August 22nd.

Youngsters will hit the court for lots of excitement during Brenner Children’s Kids’ Day at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The day begins at 9:30 a.m., offering age-appropriate activities for children ages 6−8 years old until 11 a.m. Ages 9−12 will follow with age-appropriate activities from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. ChickFil-A of Thruway Shopping Center and Peace Haven Road will serve lunch for all participants at the conclusion of the day.

USTA North Carolina will provide most of the Brenner Children’s Kids’ Day activities, which will focus on the fundamentals, skills and fun of tennis for all ability levels.

Brenner Children’s Kids’ Day is offered FREE to the public. The Winston-Salem Open’s Mascot, “Bo,” will be making an appearance, along with other mascots. Bring your cameras!

The next day on Sunday, August 24th,

the Winston-Salem Open will feature an interactive 10 & Under Workshop, which will be taught by a national trainer, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

The workshop highlights skills, development, progression and child-centered activities. The cost to participate in the 10 & Under Workshop is $15 each. As part of the $15, all participants will receive tickets good for a Sunday, August 23rd, tennis session at the Winston-Salem Open.

Don’t forget to save plenty of time during the week of August 22nd−29th to enjoy professional tennis with the whole family. Tournament officials have moved the start time of the day sessions to 3 p.m., instead of noon, to make it easier for fans to seamlessly enjoy both day and evening sessions.

“We’re rapidly gearing up for the fifth year of the WinstonSalem Open. Our fans have been incredibly loyal and supportive of the tournament,” Winston-Salem Open Tournament Director Bill Oakes said. “The tournament is later in August this year and is after the beginning of the year for most local schools, including Wake Forest. With that in mind, we moved the afternoon sessions to begin at 3 o’clock to make it easier for fans to watch both sessions of the tournament without leaving the stadium complex.”

Some plan for it better than others, but when the reality of retiring actually sets in, many retirees begin to ask, “What do I do now?” As the grind of working fades into the past, there are newfound freedoms to do more things that work, and maintaining a home and family life may have prevented. It is at this point that many retirees begin to wonder if staying in their home is the best plan.

There is a lot to consider if one chooses to remain in his or her home, especially the cost of maintenance and repairs, time spent in upkeep, and the overall quality of life now and in the future. If the thought of keeping up with all of that in the “golden years” of retirement doesn’t seem all that appealing, an independent living community may be the answer.

“People’s homes can hold countless memories, and embracing a move can be tough,” says Vicki Clark, Director, Community and Network Development for Parkwood Place, an independent living retirement community in Elkin, NC. “But on the flip side, managing a home can be a burden at any age, and during retirement, costly maintenance and repairs 18 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

may be difficult to afford on a fixed income.

Not having to deal with the hassles of home ownership and having the freedom to go out and experience a worry-free retirement can be very liberating, and it can be achieved by residing in an independent living community.”

Once the decision is made to move into a retirement community, the key is to find the best fit. From amenities and activities to price, there are many factors to consider.

Most retirement communities have allinclusive pricing, meaning residents pay one fixed price that covers rent, amenities and any number of additional services.

Many communities also charge large buy-in fees, so that additional cost must be factored into the decision-making process.

“At Parkwood Place, the only upfront charge is the equivalent of one month’s rent, which is something like a security deposit, and that’s it,” Clark says. “The monthly fee we charge residents covers all utilities (except phone), maid service, transportation and freshly prepared meals. If a faucet leaks, it is fixed without any extra charge. Residents may also decorate and furnish their apartment-homes to their style.”

The next thing you will want to consider is amenities. “If you like to cook, you

obviously want a community that offers kitchens in its apartments,” Clark says.

“However, if you don’t like to cook, you should consider a community that offers meals, and schedule a tour around a meal.”

If you lead a more physically active lifestyle, you probably want to be sure you’ll have access to a gym, pool, and other fitness activities. If you prefer a more laid-back lifestyle, you may want to see how quiet the apartments are. If you want to limit driving, a community’s proximity to shopping and/or entertainment should be considered. If you have health concerns, access to physicians should be looked into, and so on.

“When people tour Parkwood Place, we want them to get a good sense of our warm, friendly downhome atmosphere and really experience what their home life may be like,” Clark says. “We encourage visitors to engage our residents and have candid discussions about living here. The right retirement community needs to feel good to the person living there, so he or she can fully enjoy retirement.”

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY WITH A FAMILY TRUST

Careful parents realize that a will allows them to choose guardians to take care of their children’s physical needs, should something happen to both parents. In addition, a will that contains a properly executed family trust can flexibly take care of the children’s monetary needs even under changing conditions.

WHAT IS A TRUST?

A trust is a legal mechanism where a giver, or “grantor,” 1) leaves money to help a future beneficiary or beneficiaries; 2) leaves instructions for how that money is to be used; and 3) chooses a trusted caretaker (trustee), who will be able to care for the monetary needs of the beneficiary or

beneficiaries even under changing circumstances. A trust can “stand alone” as an independent document, or it can be added to another document such as a will. When parents of minor children visit an attorney to get a will drafted for them, the attorney may draft a will containing a trust.

THE FAMILY TRUST: A family trust, added to a will, is designed to extend the care, savings and values of the parents to

the children if tragedy strikes and the parents die while the children are still minors.

CARE: As directed by the family trust, the trustee gives each of the children funds only when needed according to their own particular requirements and circumstances, much as the parents would. And the family trust typically directs the trustee to spend the trust funds on needs important to the parents, not on frivolous purchases. For example, typical family trust language directs the trustee to pay at the trustee’s discretion for each child’s “health, education, maintenance and support.”

SAVINGS: Instead of the parents’ will giving their savings to their children directly, the family trust is designed to hold the parents’ savings for the children in a protected “common pot.” The children do not start receiving the balance of the trust, or trust principal, until the age, which the parents designate in advance, when they think the children will be mature (for example, age 25, 30 or 35 years old, or whatever the parents choose). In addition, the drafting attorney typically makes sure that any life insurance proceeds from the parents flow into the family trust, instead of to the children directly.

VALUES:

If the parents can’t be around for their children, they can at least have selected a trustee in advance who shares their hopes and values and will take a parental approach to providing for the children’s needs. By selecting a trustee and guardians for their children who share their values, parents who utilize a will with a family trust provide their children with the best chance of success should the unthinkable happen.

ummer’s almost over, and perhaps you’ve run out of ideas for keeping the little ones busy. If so, try these simple projects using school glue to make.

Window Clings. Add a few drops of liquid dish deterg ent soap to a fourounce bottle of school glue, then tint with food colori ng to your desired shade.

Shake well. Let the bottle sit overnight. You can print pictur es or make your own designs for this project. If you’re using a pre-printed design, place it into a page protector (you can also use a Ziplock or wax paper ) and trace the image on top with the glue. Allow the glue to dry overnight before peeling from the page protector and placing on the window. The thicke r the glue, the stronger your window cling will be.

Stained Glass. Purchase cheap dollar store frames and hot glue the glass into place in the frame. Place the frame on an easy-to-cle an surface, or use wax paper beneath. Add black paint to a bottle of schoo l glue and shake well.

Use the bottle to draw the outline of your “stained glass” picture, allowing it to dry overnight. Tint remaining bottles of glue with food coloring, adding a couple drops of water and shaking well before filling in the remaining clear portions of glass.

Salt pictures. Use a bottle of white glue to draw a pictur e on a piece of construction paper. Sprinkle salt over the wet glue. Use a paint brush or dropper to add color (this can be watercolor paint or food coloring). The paint will adhere to the salt to create a colorful, textured image .

Slime. This is an easy project to use up left-over glue.

Mix ½ cup glue with ½ cup water and stir well. Add food coloring to tint before mixing in a ½ cup of liquid starch (available in the laundry isle). Use a spoon to mix the three ingredients until the mix begins to congeal and then knead by hand. Place on a hard, washable surface for play. When you’re finished, place in an airtight Ziplock for storage.

n just a few short weeks, thousands of children across our community will head back to school.

Some will start the new school year excited after a summer filled with new experiences, reading, and a brand new first-day-of-school outfit and backpack filled with supplies.

But so many others won’t have that opportunity.

In Forsyth County, more than 55 percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

In elementary schools, that number is even higher. In our community, local Ys are working to help kids achieve more by starting school as prepared as possible.

The YMCA Backpack Campaign helps make back-to-school special for kids whose families may be struggling to make ends meet. Branches of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina work with local nonprofits and schools to gather backpacks and school supplies to ensure every student starts the school year ready to learn.

August 1st through August 15th, new members can join the Y for a $0 joining fee when they donate a new backpack.

YMCA Bright Beginnings is a program that pairs children in need with volunteers who serve as shopping buddies to help students pick out a new outfit, coat and shoes for the first day of school. A new outfit on the first day of school helps children feel confident and ready to learn. The children also receive a backpack filled with school supplies, and food and fellowship after the shopping trip. The Kernersville Family YMCA was the first branch in the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina to offer this program and it continues to grow each year. Today, it is offered at five YMCAs in the area.

During the summer, YMCA Summer Learning Academies helped to close the education achievement gap and fight summer learning loss. The five-week programs serve more than 300 children who are identified as “academically atrisk” by their school. The programs incorporate math, reading and tutoring by certified teachers; health and wellness information on nutrition and physical activity; computer labs and enrichment components, such as science, character development, the arts and humanities, as well as educational field trips and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities. As part of the program, parents attended weekly meetings offered in English or Spanish, which provide information on the education system in North Carolina, tips for communicating with teachers, parenting skills and tips for communicating with children and other family topics.

During the school year, YMCA Before- and After-School programs help kids keep learning after the school bell rings.

Combining play with academics, the Y’s afterschool program provides learning enrichment through arts, music, physical education, sports and nutrition. It also provides children with an extra support system to help them achieve and reach their full potential. e asked Miranda Lobs, owner and Director of Pro Dance Academy, in celebration of Pro Dance’s third dance season, what she would say the top 3 things are that make Pro Dance a stand-out studio. Although Miranda had some difficulty choosing just 3, she was quite confident these three things have continued to amaze her as being such a blessing in her studio.

One of the missions of Pro Dance Academy is to build children up through the art of dance and to promote an overall studio environment that intends to build up, rather than to tear down. Pro Dance strives to maintain positive relationships between the owners, instructors, dancers and their families, explains Miranda. She believes that this foundational expectation of being a studio with low drama and high positivity has drawn amazing instructors and families to our studio. “Our instructors are incredible! They have been loyal to Pro Dance since we opened our doors and truly see the studio and its students as part of their family. They invest themselves wholeheartedly and love seeing the dancers find joy in dance,” says Miranda. But according to Lobs, it doesn’t stop there. “We also have parents that are at the studio to see the children be built up and to build them up as well. On any given day, you can walk into the studio and hear uplifting conversations, as opposed to any type of gossip. It’s truly heart-filling to know that Pro Dance is a place that encompasses love first,” says Miranda.

“Our recital is concise, efficient and fun!”

Without a doubt, Miranda says the one thing that receives the most compliments is Pro Dance’s annual recital, because of the unique approach they take to the show. Miranda draws on her experience as a performer and an instructor, as well as being a parent, to put together a show that everyone enjoys. They are able to keep their annual recital with about 50 acts to only 2 hours long. “I believe that there is no reason a show needs to last longer than a movie,” says Miranda, “so I make sure that our recital is concise and efficient while still showcasing our dancers and giving them their time to shine.” Miranda goes on to explain that parents can buy their tickets online, ahead of time, and pick the seats they want, so the day of the show does not include waiting for hours in a line to try to get seats together. They also give recital gifts and medals/trophies to their youngest dancers and dancers who have been at the studio at least 3 yrs., and the dancers get to watch the other acts from the balcony when they are not performing. In addition to the actual mechanics of a timely and organized show, Miranda says it’s more than just that. “Our show is really fun to watch! We perform a ‘Teacher dance’ that is at the level of each teacher’s ability. I love being able to show the parents that we won’t ask our dancers to do any move we can not do ourselves, and we have some amazingly talented instructors!” Miranda then goes onto explain, “We also close out our show with the much-anticipated ‘Daddy Dance.’ It’s a secret until the actual performance and everyone loves it! We had 28 dads volunteer to perform in it this year and it is a wonderful thing to see these dads have a great time and create lasting memories with their kids.”

Miranda explained that when she first moved to North Carolina she was not very familiar with clogging and really didn’t intend to offer it on their schedule. But when Ms. Danielle, who is a previous studio owner herself and is very well known in clogging circles, reached out to Pro Dance, Miranda states she was open to trying it out. “We are the only studio to offer clogging within a 30-minute radius, and our program is phenomenal. Ms. Danielle has helped a lot of people fall in love with

he Wells brothers were born to excel.

This is especially true when it comes to soccer. Through the years, the boys have been leaders on the field both at home and abroad.

“Ethan got involved in soccer as a way to help channel his excess energy,” said Sandra Wells, the boys’ mom. “Noah got involved by default. He got to watch his older brother play for a few years before he picked up the sport.

Both boys also played basketball for WCCC for a couple of years during their soccer offseason, to have something to keep them busy during the winter. It didn’t take long before soccer became a year-round sport for both.”

There is always the possibility of injury when playing any sport, but there are also immensely beneficial lessons to be learned when taking part in team activities. “I believe there can be dangers and negative press around any sport,” said Sandra. “I feel that both of my boys have been able to develop their natural talents through soccer, and I am thrilled to see them focus their energy and attention there. I believe this one-sport focus has served them well in their soccer careers.”

In a relatively short time, Ethan and Noah have developed impressive athletic resumes. “Ethan and Noah have had the opportunity to play against teams in Europe through their affiliation with the NC Fusion and U.S. Academy Soccer programs,” said Sandra.

“Ethan traveled to England in 2012, and Noah traveled to Italy in 2012 and to Germany this past spring to play soccer. Getting to see the different caliber players in Europe has motivated them to continue to work hard.”

As for now, Ethan will play collegiate soccer at UNCG while Noah will play for the U.S. Soccer Academy. “Both boys played for Reagan this past season, Ethan as a senior and Noah as a freshman. Ethan played for Reagan his freshman and senior years, playing with the U.S. Soccer Academy during his freshman, sophomore and junior years. The rules for playing with the U.S. Soccer Academy changed after Ethan’s freshman year, making him unable to play for Reagan his sophomore and junior years. Having already made his college commitment at the beginning of his junior year to play for the UNCG Spartans, he made the decision not to return to the Academy program and, instead, play for Reagan his senior year. Noah, following in his brother’s footsteps, will be playing for the U.S. Soccer Academy next year and will not play for Reagan. Playing with the U.S. Soccer Academy offers more exposure (than a local club or high school program may be able to offer) to college coaches from across the United States. Noah would also like to continue his soccer career into college.”

Through the years, the Wells brothers have received many awards to acknowledge their achievements in soccer. Ethan was named MVP Forsyth Cup; All-Conference CPC Defensive Player of the Year; NCSCA AllRegion; NCSCA All-State; 2014 NSCAA Fall Boys High School All-Mid-Atlantic Region; NCHSAA 4A State Championship MVP and was recently selected to the 2015 NSCAA High School Boys’ Scholar All-American Team. Noah was named All Conference— Honorable Mention. While these titles are impressive, it was a moment during last year’s

season that will stick with Sandra forever! “The most magical moment of their soccer career was being able to play together for Reagan last year, win the Conference Championship and go on to win the NCHSAA 4-A State Soccer Championship with the game-winning goal coming from Ethan on an assist from Noah— priceless,” said Sandra.

All of their success has led the boys to start their own business. “Currently, we are offering individual and small-group soccer training,” said Noah. “Wells2 (Wells squared) offers passionate, personalized soccer training to help those interested in youth soccer play to their fullest potential. Because we know how difficult training, studying and juggling personal interests can be, we are also able to help individuals that are looking at what it takes to play beyond club or high school soccer by offering advice on how to make these dreams come true.”

Introductions It's hard to know what to expect when a family dog meets the new arrival for the first time. The puppy planted himself in a sitting position and readily gave licks to her sniffing nose. He then chose to lay on a dog pillow, and she joined him. They sniffed and licked each other for hours, never leaving each other. Immediately, the decision to adopt a second dog became, indeed, a positive experience.

Behind the Build

ome. There’s no place like it. It’s where you hang your hat. It’s where friends become family, children grow up and loved ones grow old. For many, a home is a staple of their lives, an often unrecognized blessing.

But for some, a home is a faraway wish, a hope for their future, a seemingly impossible dream. This summer, that impossible dream came to life for four Winston-Salem families, thanks to Habitat For Humanity’s annual Home Builder’s Blitz, and the efforts of local builders, including Isenhour Homes.

The Home Builder’s Blitz is a national project that brings together a community’s resources to build multiple homes for deserving families in just one week. The first Builder’s Blitz was held in 2006, and they have since built over 1,300 homes nationwide. This year, Forsyth County was able to participate in the event by building four homes in the Boston-Thurmond neighborhood of Winston-Salem during the week of June 8th–12th, 2015. Together with Habitat For Humanity and the Home Builder’s Association, Isenhour Homes, PCI Builders, Veritas Construction, Sonoma Building and Adams Egloff Properties, were able to give a local community hope and four families brand-new homes. To get a better idea of what goes into such a massive, fast-paced project, Isenhour Homes takes us behind the build for an up-close look at the Blitz.

Isenhour Homes has been in business for over 30 years, constructing awardwinning custom homes, built to provide quality and beauty at any price point. Their passion for the craft, relationship to their clients and attention to detail make their homes distinctive in Triad neighborhoods. They make their living by building in our communities, but they also take time to build up our communities, as well. As a well-established business in Forsyth County, Isenhour Homes has contributed to its fair share of philanthropy, including a long-time relationship with Habitat for Humanity. “Our owner, K. Todd Isenhour, has been quite committed to Habitat,” said Gary Smith, the Head of Construction for Isenhour Homes. With roughly a dozen Habitat homes and a previous Builder’s Blitz already under their tool belt, who better than the Isenhour team to show us behind the Blitz?

By 6:30 a.m. on Monday, June 8th, East 23rd Street, where the four homes were built, had already become flooded with construction vehicles, building materials, workers and neighborhood onlookers. “It’s an amazing display of good will,” said Smith, of the Builder’s Blitz. “We are this mass of people descending on a community and everyone is working together.” The street was chosen to receive the new homes as part of an ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood. E. 23rd Street had not seen new construction in over 70 years; so four new homes in one week spurred quite a reaction. “The neighbors got very excited for new homes and what that would mean for them from an economic and safety standpoint,” said Smith. “It was so inspiring to us.”

This year, Isenhour Homes built a home for the Scipios, a family of four and longtime residents of the Winston-Salem area. Their home was designed as a threebedroom, two-bath house with a living room and open-concept dining and kitchen area. No matter the size, building a home from the ground up in one week is no easy feat. “We usually build a home in about 90 to 120 days,” said Smith. “So we were working on an extremely accelerated timeline.” To plan for the event, Isenhour Homes’ staff prepared for weeks, making detailed schedules to maximize efficiency.

Day one, workers immediately got started on the framing, roofing, plumbing, electrical and HVAC for the home. By the end of day two, the home had been insulated, dry-walled and siding had gone up. Day three began the more detailed and personalized aspects of the home, with cabinets going in, doors being set, trim 36 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

An Insider’s Look at Habitat For Humanity’s Home Builder’s Blitz with Isenhour Homes installed and paint going on the walls. By Thursday morning, day four of the project, the Scipio’s house was almost complete. After final home inspections, landscaping and quick touch-ups, the home was finished after just three and a half days. “It never ceases to amaze me how well they work together,” said Smith of the various workers that piled into the home throughout the project. At some points, Smith estimated there were 45−50 workers on site, completing various tasks simultaneously inside the 1,200−1,300 squarefoot house.

On Saturday, June 13th, the homes were handed over to the families as another successful Builder’s Blitz came to a close. The families and neighbors were excited, and the builders proudly stood by their handiwork.

However, the real behindthe-scenes story of the Builder’s Blitz was not anything that could be seen, but rather what was felt by those involved.

Under the dirty T-shirts, the tired hands, and the overloaded tool belts, the workers of Isenhour Homes walked away from the Scipio family’s new home with the feeling of overwhelming satisfaction and awe at the product of communal good will. “I don’t care how old you are or how many homes you’ve built, there’s just something about walking into a brand-new home,” said Smith. “It’s a very emotional experience.”

With the amount of love, care and dedication that went into building the houses, the Scipios and the other receiving families can honestly say that home is where the heart is.

Adding Family Playtime I

TO YOUR LIFE

Including playtime as a part of the everyday routine can help get your family more active. As your family sticks with the routine, your children will learn and know when to expect playtime. For example, if your family routine includes playtime from 4 to 5 p.m., your children will not be surprised when you remind them to go play. You may be surprised when your kids get the hang of this routine and go play on their own.

Life is busy, so think realistically when adding family playtime to your family’s schedule. It may not be possible to do this every day. Perhaps you can have set times when you play with your children. However, the rest of the time, your kids will have to “fend for themselves” during playtime. This can be siblings playing together, your children playing with neighborhood friends, or even your kids playing alone.

f you’re like most folks, you and your family run from activity to activity every day, struggling to fit in everything you need to do. Adding one more thing to your busy life may seem impossible. Yet, family playtime is important for your kids’ health and well-being. One great tool for making playtime an important part of your family’s day is routine and structure.

We plan our children’s activities and get them where they need to go, so scheduling family playtime can work the same way. For example, your family may decide to make Fridays “Family Friday.” That day will be a time when you do something as a family, either to be active or just spend time together. Children love to have routine and structure. If they know what to expect, your kids will usually be happy to have family playtime together.

Parents making playtime a priority in their own lives teaches their children to do the same. When children see their parents playing and having fun, they are more likely to follow our lead. You can also involve your children in planning your family’s playtime schedule and what fun activities you can do together.

To minimize the risk, use a repellant with DEET, wear long sleeves and pants, avoid areas with hives, standing water, or tall grass and do nightly checks for ticks and other insects when you come indoors. If a bite or sting does occur, here are some tips to help.

Bee/Wasp/Hornet Sting: Remove stinger ASAP to limit venom exposure, using a fingernail or credit card to scrape in a horizontal motion across the skin. Expect to have pain, swelling, redness and itching at or near the site. Cool compresses, ice packs, baking soda or calamine lotion can all be used for comfort. Taking an antihistamine by mouth or applying over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to the site can also help. Call your pediatrician if there have been multiple stings or if hives develop in a different location on the body other than where the sting occurred. Call 911 if there is any difficulty breathing, shallow, rapid breathing or dizziness.

Ant/Fly/Flea/Mosquito Bite: Most commonly there will be little bumps or mounds that are very itchy at the site of the bite. There may be a small blister in the middle or some surrounding redness and warmth. They usually last 24−48 hours, but could last longer. Use cool compresses and overthe-counter hydrocortisone cream to the area and take an antihistamine by mouth. Try to minimize scratching and wash with soap and water to prevent infection.

Ticks: Often the bite is painless and not itchy, so it can go unnoticed. There may be some redness and warmth to the area that will fade away over a few days. If the tick is still attached, remove it by using tweezers or fingers wrapped in Kleenex to grasp as close to the skin as possible. Then without squeezing (to minimize release of tick saliva), apply gentle steady upward pressure until it releases. Do not use Vaseline or a match to remove it, this will only make the tick burrow deeper and release more saliva. Then wash the area with soap and water. If any flu-like symptoms (headache, fever, aches) occur within 1−2 weeks of the bite, call your pediatrician.

• Use just enough to cover exposed skin and avoid reapplying, unless necessary.

• Do not apply to cuts or wounds.

• Use products with DEET (the best defense against biting insects)—will last 2−8 hours depending on percentage of DEET (10% may last 2 hours, 24% lasts 5 hours).

• Do not use products with more than 30% DEET on children.

• Try to avoid DEET combined with sunscreen—DEET makes SPF less effective.

• Repellants made from essential oils (Skin-So-Soft, citronella) will protect less than 2 hours.

• Repellants with permethrin should only be applied to clothing and not skin – can also apply to outdoor equipment, such as tents or sleeping bags.

FORSYTH FAMILY EYE CARE: OUR VISION IS YOUR VISION! A New Office for an Established Practice

I

n March of 2015, Forsyth Family Eye Care made a big move. After more than 45 years of patient care and practice growth in the Old Town area of Winston-Salem, the need for a larger, more efficient facility became evident. In 2014, owner Dr. Alex Appanaitis began working with the Village at Robinhood and in 2015 moved the practice into an all-new and modern office. The move also prompted a name change from Old Town Family Eye Care to Forsyth Family Eye Care.

Dr. Appanaitis and his associate, Dr. Amy Gurley, both agree that the move has been a lot of work, but the hard work has been worthwhile. “Before we even opened, we had new patients walk in and schedule eye exams. One gentleman even went ahead and picked out his frames!” said Dr. Gurley. “We strive to provide excellent vision and maintain healthy eyes for the entire family,” said Dr. A. Since most patients receive annual eye exams, eye doctors have a unique and longterm relationship with them. This yearly contact strengthens a lifelong relationship between the practice, the patients and their families. Many of these patients have been with the practice since it began in 1969.

As patients age, regular eye exams are crucial in order to maintain lifestyle and overall health. Many health problems and pathologies—from high blood pressure to certain cancers—can be detected by a comprehensive eye exam. These conditions can all be diagnosed and managed here. Surgical consultations can be arranged for patients when needed. Seniors age 65 and over should have complete eye exams every year to check for cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other eye conditions.

Does Your Child Need Glasses?

Young children generally don’t know they are experiencing vision problems. When rising Lewisville Elementary third-grader Katie Phelps began complaining of headaches, her mom Alisa brought her to Forsyth Family Eye Care for a complete eye exam. Alisa prepped Katie about the eye exam at least a day or two before to introduce her to some of the things that would happen. Katie did need glasses and enjoyed picking out new eyewear with our experienced opticians. Her headaches have disappeared, and although her new glasses make her look like a movie star, Katie and her mom still struggle with a common problem among many younger patients: keeping up with glasses.

Optician Karen Gordon said, “Kids run, jump, fall, and play hard. So we really have to emphasize how important it is to take care of their new glasses.” She recommends having your child keep a protective case for his or her glasses in their backpack, desk, or other convenient place while they are at school. place to store your child’s glasses. “We also provide a special cloth in their case to help them keep their lenses clean and minimize scratches.”

How do you Know if your Child Needs Eyeglasses?

First, make sure your child has a yearly eye exam. Just as they can suddenly have a growth spurt, their eyes can change seemingly overnight. With annual eye exams, the eye doctor can monitor eye health, as well as provide vision correction when needed. In between yearly eye exams, Dr. Appanaitis reminds parents to watch for symptoms of eye or vision problems in your child. Here are a few things to keep an eye on: • Does your child squint? Squinting is a classic symptom of either myopia or “nearsightedness” (not seeing well far away) or hyperopia or “farsightedness” (not seeing as well close-up, and possibly far away). Glasses may be in order.

• Does your child close one eye in an attempt to focus? If so, this could be a structural problem, like astigmatism or strabismus (a deviation from normal eye position).

• Does your child rub his or her eyes? There may be some eyestrain or ocular allergies.

• Do you constantly tell your child to scoot away from the television? Sitting too close to the television or having to move closer to the television are signs that your child could be nearsighted.

• Is reading a challenge? Losing place while reading or skipping lines may signal an eye muscle problem or vision problem such as astigmatism.

• Are headaches frequent? Frontal headaches or “brow aches” are often a result of uncorrected vision problems. The child may be attempting clear their blurry vision, but instead his or her efforts result in headaches. (Information provided by VSP)

When Should Kids have their Eyes Examined?

Many issues that affect learning can be visual and are often missed by parents and pediatricians. In fact, studies now show that distance vision screenings like those used by pediatrician’s offices and schools can miss up to 50% of vision problems. Experts say up to 10% of preschoolers and 25% of school-aged children have some form of visual impairment. Early identification of a child’s vision malady is crucial because some childhood vision problems can cause permanent vision loss.

For school-aged children, the American Optometric Association recommends an eye exam every two years, if no vision correction is required or no vision complaints are noted. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or according to their eye doctor’s recommendations.

Tests used during pediatric exams vary depending on the age and maturity level of the child. Many children five years old and older can

have the exact same exam as their adult parents, with a few extra school-related tests. Our philosophy is to perform as comprehensive an exam as possible while making the experience fun and interactive for the children.

During a normal visit for children, vision is tested for excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, as well as eye movement ability and other eye health problems. “It is very important to identify children who are visually impaired,” said Dr. Appanaitis. “Vision development and eye health problems are easier to correct if treatment begins early.”

He lives in Lewisville, NC with wife of 20 years, Mariedith, and daughters Mary-Kate and Alexa and their Labradoodle, Tallullah.

Dr. Amy Gurley was born and raised in Newton, NC. She also graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2004 and from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN, in 2008. Dr. Gurley participated in SVOSH (Student Volunteers in Optometric Service to Humanity) for three summers while she was a student at SCO. While many of the obvious ones deal with being able to communicate in other countries, there are actually many benefits which can help you succeed right here in this great country. Read on for more inspiration on why everyone should attempt to learn another language!

2. More job opportunities will come your way.

Although the majority of the world is bilingual, statistics show that only 17 percent of Americans can speak another language. Considering that many European countries have up to 56 percent of their population being multilingual, we definitely fall behind as a country. This said, by knowing more than one language, you can literally put yourself on another tier in respect to the U.S. business world.

4. You’ll have a higher appreciation for different cultures. As someone who comes from a bilingual household—mother is Peruvian, father is American—I have found that being able to speak Spanish has increased my own interest in other cultures and their own languages.

Since I personally know how much culture works hand-in-hand with the language, I am now working towards being trilingual!

6. Your family will want to follow in your footsteps. A family that learns together, grows together. A large part of learning a new language is the social aspect of speaking with others. If more than one family member is working on becoming bilingual, they are more apt to practice speaking the language if other household members are involved.

1. You will become smarter. Yes, speaking more than one language actually helps your brain work more efficiently. Studies have shown that speaking more than just your native tongue is a great way to exercise your brain and keep it in tiptop condition. This is, of course, especially true if you consistently switch between the languages throughout your entire life.

3. Your memory will be enhanced. Studies have shown that bilinguals, when given tasks regarding memory, always score higher than those who can only speak one language. This can be incredibly helpful as one approaches their twilight years, in that having a strong memory can be preventative against early onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

5. You will expand your vocabulary. As you are learning a new language, you naturally acquire new vocabulary words. Many of the words you are translating you may not use in your own language. This said, many find themselves wanting to try to expand their own vocabulary within their native tongue. For example, in 1968, sociolinguist Susan Ervin studied Japanese women living in the States who were bilingual: She asked them to complete a series of sentences in both languages, and found that not only was the wording different, but the intention was different, too—because of the cultural differences associated with each language.

7. You are never “lost in translation.” One of the greatest things about being bilingual is the fact that you can pick up on the true meanings of the different sayings within that language. I can still remember how hilarious it was to explain to my friends that “La Cucaracha” is actually a song about a cockroach.

t’s no secret that dealing with a disability can be tough—especially one that limits your daily activities and may keep you from the hobbies and travels you love most.

Bravo for Wake Forest Baptist Health, whose immensely successful program Club Independence is changing lives for local folks living with conditions such as multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury. Now in its eighth year, the program is led by licensed recreational therapists with a shared goal of using recreation as a tool to maintain—and even improve—physical, cognitive and social functions. Their hope is to guide members to become as independent as possible as they master overcoming their personal obstacles.

Program coordinator Julie Bradwell can enthusiastically report that club members really take on the role of an extended family. “We laugh,” she says. “The members help each other out and look forward to seeing each other the next time.”

Known as “interactive recreational therapy,” Club Independence offers sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The full-day rate is $25.00, with a half-day rate of $15.00, and prior to joining participants must complete an application that includes a physician’s signature. Independence with your own medical management is required

With an average of five members at each class (which can vary from two to 10), the group enjoys positive, uplifting activities from chair yoga, spirituality sessions, adaptive fitness, board games and always popular pet therapy, to community outings that might include local museums, restaurants, bowling, golfing, a visit to the farmers’ market, train excursions and even beach trips! Guest speakers are part of the routine, as are cooking classes, promoting a once-daily activity now missed by many of the members.

“The program is important for persons with a neurological diagnosis, because it helps them get out of their house and engage with others, while at the same time working on improving their everyday function,” says Julie. “Club Independence brings back a quality of life that might have been missing in someone’s life.”

Recent intern Morgan Bralley echoed the idea of participants being truly like a family.

Getting out and about in the community also allows members to identify local resources that are easily accessible to them and that are perfect for enjoying with family and friends on non-club days. Julie also points out that the club’s impact on its “family” members has been shown to increase stamina and the ability to engage on both a cognitive (recalling names, keeping up with a card game, problemsolving) and a physical level for a bit longer than usual—a benefit that is wonderful for selfesteem. For its happy participants the program’s name says it all—independence!

A NEW SCHOOL YEAR ALSO MEANS

EMOTIONAL TRANSITIONS

A

As moms, we cherish each and every developmental milestone. From our child’s first steps to the start of selfsufficiency, our expressions of excitement are oftentimes mingled with tears. It seems almost impossible that our child is about to enter the next giant leap, which may be kindergarten, a new school, or, perhaps, college. We wonder if we’ll be brave on that day to offer encouraging words and have the strength to walk away without noticeable tears.

No matter how long you have awaited this moment, the day-to-day life may be very different this year. Letting go, for many of us, may truly be traumatic. For some, it will be a return to work after being a stay-at-home mom for so many years, or have made the decision to home school. Other moms may be dealing with some form of empty nest and the awkward silences filling the afternoons and quite possibly the evenings. While each of us may struggle with a new transition, change can bring unexpected and surprising possibilities.

Sometimes, we find great transitions occur year after year. Julie Wilson spent eleven years as a home-school parent. Last August, with her two children no longer at home, she discovered the transition, over time, was positive. Julie writes, “On the second day of school, I felt the impact of being in an empty house, and I lost months of my life feeling miserable. I debated returning to work and 52 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

school, or just increasing my social calendar, and, ultimately, I did a little of each. I missed my children every day, but I have grown to love the quiet hours where I can think, write, work, and meet friends for a cup of tea without constant interruptions. Lunch dates with my husband became a thing, and I began to enjoy going to the gym or anywhere by myself. I felt free. The school year ended with glowing comments on report cards and awards and accolades.

“I will enjoy the journey. I will not cry. I will laugh a belly laugh on the first day of school as we dive head first into all the educational opportunities the world has to offer...together!”

This summer, our family prepared for another transition. This one took us to a new city, a new job and new friends. My children are exiting the private school period, and embarking back to the journey of homeschooling. This juncture is necessitated by all that will be going on with our move, and the kids are thrilled. I learned to understand the silence and create a life for myself. Now, I am giving up ‘me’ and again focusing on them. I am thankful for every day I have with

them; so, I will enjoy the journey. I will not cry. I will laugh a belly laugh on the first day of school as we dive head first into all the educational opportunities the world has to offer...together!”

This topic speaks personally to me. Since my son passed away in late March, my purpose and who I was quickly changed. I was looking forward to my daughter starting kindergarten, and my son experiencing the thrill of a classroom and friends in a half-day preschool.

My feelings of excitement for this fall season have transitioned to sadness. My home, Monday through Friday, will become an empty nest. Transitions in the best of times are never simple. Similar to so many moms in this new season, I will join countless others who will be rediscover what God wants us to do. We all have a purpose. Sometimes, the direction is so simple, and other times we’ll have to look a little deeper within ourselves.

As moms, we always worry about our kids in these new transitions. It may be hard to realize they are resilient, learning, forming new friendships, and easing into the new year with few problems. In fact, we are the ones who are constantly affected by change. Putting one step in front of the other, surrendering to God, and allowing what is yet to be discovered to unfold, can help each of us through those challenging days ahead. You never know, this year may be one of the best yet!

The Peer Project will officially launch during the 2015-16 school year, and its first professional development opportunity will be a round of educator grants available to staff who are attending the WS/FCS Collaborative Learning Conference in August. Additional Peer Project training opportunities will be shared in the coming months, and all programming will be planned and administered by the school system.

“The Foundation has a long history of supporting our educators, and we’re so pleased that it will partner with us to achieve our district goals. We know that in order to achieve these, we must work together to equip our staff with the tools, resources and enrichment opportunities they need,” notes Dr. Beverly Emory, Superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

here is exciting news on the horizon about a brand-new education partnership between The Winston-Salem Foundation and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools!

In June, the two organizations announced the establishment of the Peer Project, a $2 million commitment by the Foundation to support local educators with a broad and varied range of professional-development learning opportunities over the next five years. Training opportunities will not be limited strictly to teachers, but will be available to school system employees across all function areas—with the ultimate goal of enriching the classroom experience and boosting achievement for our students.

While it is often viewed as crucial that companies and organizations invest in their employees, in recent years professional development funds for educators have become increasingly scarce. The Foundation’s President, Scott Wierman, notes, “We know that there is a desire throughout Forsyth County to show community support for our invaluable public school educators. By investing in a culture of continuous educator learning, we’re investing in both our students and in the community as a whole. The Foundation is excited to be making this significant investment in the school system to positively impact the instructional effectiveness in all of our classrooms.”

The Foundation has worked closely with the school system to identify this new strategic priority to support the district’s stated goals and priorities, which include: • by 2020, 90 percent of third-grade students will read on or above grade level; • by 2018, the graduation rate will be 90 percent; • by 2018, the achievement gap will be closed between subgroups by 10 percentage points while increasing the performance of all subgroups.

This investment in one of our community’s greatest assets—our educators—is the Foundation’s second largest investment in an initiative in its history, and it sends a powerful message to teachers and WS/FCS staff that they are valued.

PEER PROJECT: Innovative Support for our Educators

The Peer Project aligns with other grant-making investments that the Foundation has made in the school system, including 32 Community Grants totaling $462,671 over the past 10 years. The Foundation also supports individual educators’ professional development through the Forsyth County Teacher Grants program, which in 2015 alone awarded 52 grants totaling $78,446 for innovative and results-oriented educational opportunities. The Foundation’s educational support in Forsyth County also extends to nearly $1 million in college scholarships that were given to local students in the 2014-2015 school year.

We look forward to seeing the fruits of the Peer Project’s impact as innovative professional development opportunities are provided to our educators over the next five years.

S

ensory Integration Dysfunction (SID) is a neurological disorder causing difficulties with processing information from the five classic senses; vision, auditory, touch, olfaction (smell), and taste, the sense of movement (vestibular system) and the positional sense (proprioception).

People with this disorder receive sensory input normally, but that input is perceived abnormally, often resulting in distress or confusion. The Hypersensitive child might have an aversion (over-stimulation) to the slightest touch, while the Hyposensitive child might not cry when injured; he/she might even laugh.

What if…

• you love to cook but the smell of some foods makes you (only you) sick to your stomach? For you, eating out is not an option, your diet is limited to certain textures.

• it sounds like everyone is always “yelling” at you?

• your clothes feel like they are teaming with itchy, crawly things?

• you are thirsty, the water is in a paper cup; since you can never tell how hard to hold it, it always crushes. Fearing you’ll be embarrassed, you lie and say, “I’m not thirsty”?

Some Signs of Sensory Integration Dysfunction The person: • is over- or under-sensitive to touch, sounds, sights, movement, tastes, or smells.

• experiences intense, out-ofproportion reactions to everyday experiences.

• hates “messy” (food, sand, glue, paint, lotion), especially on hands or face.

• Is bothered by certain clothing fabrics, seams, tags, waistbands, etc.

• resists grooming activities, such as brushing teeth, hair washing, or nail cutting.

• avoids touch—or needs it more than other children.

• has an unusually high or low pain tolerance.

• pushes, hits, bites, or bangs into other children, although he/she isn’t aggressive.

• is overly-sensitive to noise, seems to hear things you don’t hear.

• doesn’t seem to hear you, although you know he can hear.

• avoids foods most children of same age enjoy.

• frequently chews on clothing or hair.

Sensory Perception is a good thing, unless it over- or underreactive to such a degree that it interferes with academic success, playground prowess, or friendships. Sometimes these inabilities are (accidentally) mistaken for “behavior problems.”

True Story Ms. Pepper’s Experience: “Robbie is a happy little boy in my three-year-old class. He is happy to come to class, has a best friend and his days are joyful. Except for Free Choice time. He starts to get worried and

DESCRIPTION Tactile Sense is the sense of touch, such as with texture, temperature and pressure. Where do these senses reside? All over—most nerves are in hands and on head, but people often forget their mouths!

Visual input can be pleasing, but too much can be overstimulating (Hyper-visual), resulting in behavior issues, meltdowns or lack of focus. Hypo-visual children may “tune out” because they are not getting enough visual stimulation.

AUDITORY (hear)

Sounds may be thought to be too loud or not heard at all.

Sometimes all sounds come in at the same volume, so the child cannot filter out what he is supposed to be attentive to.

Calming, organizing, even sleeping, can be difficult when there is too much auditory stimulation. May speak loudly even though their hearing is fine.

TASTE

Taste input is strongly influenced by smell. Ever heard, “Hold your nose when taking bad-tasting medicine”? For the Hyposensitive, try stronger tastes, this may stimulate their taste buds best. For Hypersensitivity, go easy on the spices.

OLFACTORY If your child has sensory problems, certain odors can stimulate, calm, or send him into sensory overload. (smell) VESTIBULAR The Vestibular Sense, located in the middle ear, processes motion and balance, is most prevalent when spinning and (balance) swinging, and to a lesser extent, with any type of movement.

The Proprioceptive Sense processes sensory input from the movement of joints, muscles and connective tissues causing (body awareness) body awareness.

The Woman Behind Working Out, Nutrition, and C3 Fitness

DM: “We’ve watched you launch C3 Fitness and succeed at building a thriving new business. How do you balance being a business owner with being a dedicated wife and mom?”

KL: “Truthfully, it all comes down to a strong support system in my life. My husband, Bowman, our two children, and my friends are a significant part of my ability to do both roles (relatively) well. I would also say that being organized is key.

Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that organization doesn’t come easy to me, but it is a vital part of balancing a business and a family.”

OU are in for a treat this month. Who, me? Yes, you. If you are reading this article, then you have stumbled upon a light, relatable and true-to-life interview with C3 Fitness owner, Kelly Lewis. If anyone has captured the heart of Forsyth Family readers, Kelly has. With her passion for wellness, her sincere concern for others and her endless energy…she has gained the respect and admiration of many of you. Rather than focus on an informative article this month, I challenged Kelly to sit in the “hot seat.”

(I can do that because I’m not just her client, I’m also her best friend [wink].) We discussed the opportunity to give the readers a chance to learn more about the woman behind C3 Fitness. In true Kelly fashion, she took the challenge, embraced it and conquered the task at hand.

DM: “Hey Kelly! We’ve done a lot of things together in the past 12 years, but I’m not sure that I’ve ever interviewed you! You ready to roll?”

KL: “Ready as I’ll ever be! Let’s do this thing!”

DM: “Awesome! I’ll ask you a simple question and you reply with a simple answer. That sound good?” (We both laugh. As if either of us are ever short on words!)

DM: “Those are great thoughts. That leads me to the next question. What finally pushed you towards accomplishing your goal of being a Certified Personal Trainer and opening your own studio?”

KL: “Oh! That’s easy! My husband Bowman had grown weary of hearing me just talk about my dreams. One day he finally said, ‘I’m going to order these books for your Personal Training Certification if you don’t! The time is now!’ Needless to say, I ordered the books and I depended on that push from the nest.”

DM: “Most people would be surprised to hear you say that you lacked confidence in starting your own business. Is that an accurate statement?”

KL: “For sure. The truth is, that it wasn’t only about what I lacked (confidence), it was also about what I possessed, and that was a boatload of fear!”

DM: “Interesting. Can you tell us more about that?”

KL: “Sure. Opening C3 Fitness has been an incredibly proud moment for me, both personally and professionally, because I had to push through very real challenges. Fear of failure was at the top of that list.

However, C3 has truly been an amazing leap of faith. I’ve grown in every way as an individual, and it is a dream fulfilled. Dreams that come true rarely come easily.”

DM: “I think that what you have shared will resonate with many of the readers. Both men and women. If it’s okay with you, I’d like to switch gears to a few fun questions with easy answers. You up for that?”

KM: “For sure!”

DM: “What do you like to do when you aren’t busy training?”

KL: “I love relaxing beach vacations and spending time with my friends. Spending time with my friends at the beach is even better!”

DM: “What is your food ‘guilty pleasure’?”

KL: “A hot fudge brownie sundae! No doubt about it!”

DM: “Yum! How many burpees does it take to work off a brownie sundae?”

KL: “Don’t ask.” (laughs) DM: “Fair enough. Okay, that was enough of a break for you!

Let’s get back to a few more probing questions.”

KL: “I thought that was coming.” (wink) DM: “You display such confidence. Do you ever feel insecure?”

KL: “Absolutely! Especially if I slip up and begin comparing myself to others. I think it is human nature to feel insecure from time to time. Every year that passes, though, I get better at avoiding that trap.

It’s so liberating to feel satisfied in your own skin.”

DM: “That’s a good word right there. What’s the biggest mistake that fitness ‘newbies’ make, in your opinion?”

KL: “When folks jump on every diet and fitness bandwagon.

Everyone hopes for the next big thing, the thing that’s going to make reaching their goals easier...it just simply doesn’t work that way.”

DM: “Do you think it’s possible to have the ‘perfect body’?”

KL: “‘Perfect body’? It is only possible to have your perfect body.

Genetics and body type play a major role. We need to focus on attaining our individual best body and not kill ourselves trying to look like someone else.”

KL: “I definitely feel pressure, but it’s probably pressure I would place on myself regardless of what I did for a living. I know that if I do not stay in shape, I do not feel my best. If I don’t feel my best, I’m crabby. It’s my choice. I choose not to be crabby.”

DM: (laughing!) “That’s awesome! I think I speak for everyone when I say that we prefer you not to be crabby, too! Okay, last question…DM: “I realize that this question is going to make you uncomfortable, but you make me uncomfortable every time that I work out (LOL!), so it’s fair game! What do you like best about your body?”

KL: “Oh, my gosh! Really?!? Here goes...as long as I stay on point with my nutrition, it’s probably my abdominal area. Once I learned that you don’t gain abs from doing a million crunches, I feel like I can actually see results in that area of my body.

Effective fat-blasting workouts to build muscle, combined with smart choices in the kitchen, are the way to go.”

DM: “Kelly, you’ve been a great sport about this interview. The readers are going to love getting to know the woman behind C3 Fitness just a little bit better. Thank you so much for carving out a few minutes of your busy schedule for us.”

ho better to give “back-to-school” advice than teachers? I have interviewed teachers who work with children and teens of all ages.

I also spoke to teachers of self-contained and special-needs classrooms. I asked each of them, “If you could tell parents one thing, what would it be?” I hope you find their advice helpful and inspiring!

Preschool • Talk and read to your children as much as possible. For example, when you are in the car, point out symbols and letters. Always make reading aloud to your children a priority.

• Guide them and be a role model, but also allow them to have their independence. Give them the confidence in knowing they can try things without help. They may not always succeed, but they learn that it is okay to try.

Early Elementary • Read with your child every day and every opportunity you get. This will teach your children to love reading and show them the enjoyment of learning new things.

• ALWAYS be your child’s advocate, because no one else will!

• I have told several parents this: “I will only believe about 50% of what your child tells me that goes on in your home if you will only believe about 50% of what your child tells you that goes on in the classroom.”

Upper Elementary • Multiplication fact mastery is cri-ti-cal!

• Students who are placed on a sensible schedule by their parents are more successful in school. A set bedtime schedule, a good breakfast, and a book bag packed the night before makes a great beginning for a school day.

• Do not allow a child to use any excuse for not bringing home assignments and necessary materials. Help them organize the book bag and hold high expectations. Have expected consequences for low performance on homework.

• Expect good performance from your child on academic work. Help them experience joy in solid, good work.

• Model positive attitudes toward extending their learning. When your kids see you reading books, editing and revising your own e-mails or other types of writing, asking questions of other adults, researching the answers to questions online, problem solving out loud, adding and subtracting mileage or bills, they will realize deeper, real-life purposes for learning.

• Allow children to make errors—especially in older grades! How else can a child learn and grow?

• Parents are their children’s BEST teachers! We as teachers are here to partner with you to help your child reach his or her full potential.

The First-Day-of-School Jitters

ate risings, slowpaced schedules, family togetherness and relaxing evenings are some of the reasons everyone loves the summer months. It is understandable why many students have mixed emotions about the arrival of the first day of school. While they are very curious to know who will be in their class, other concerns may be driven by questions as to whether they will find a friend to sit with at lunch or if the teachers will be nice. For parents who may wonder how to subdue all those unsettling concerns, perhaps these suggestions maybe helpful.

4.Go through school supplies and talk about how pencils or other utensils, folders and spiral notebooks will be used in school. In addition, find a special location where your child can place his or her back pack every evening. It’s one ritual that can make the mornings run smoothly.

1.Children often wonder, “How will I get to school?” Talking about the morning routine is just the beginning; why not give your child the opportunity to experience the route and determine arrival times? From learning about expectations to bus safety, knowing what will occur in advance will cross off, potentially, more than one concern.

2.There are wonderful first-day-of-school books to help children learn how favorite fictional friends or animated characters overcome similar worries. A week before school starts, encourage a return to bedtime routines by reading a few well-selected titles. Parents may be relieved to find a number of “instructional moments” right there in the story line.

3.While discussing fears is healthy, also include the “what ifs.” For example, answer a fear of lunchtime with, “What if you are surrounded by classmates at lunch? Do you remember seeing tables at the cafeteria? I think everyone will be seated together, so you don’t need to worry about being alone.” One of the most important questions you can ask is, “What if your classmates have the same concerns as you?” It is 64 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

5.If you need assistance packing the first day of school lunch, all you have to do is ask. Offering options to a favorite sandwich or snack may be the key to helping your child look forward to lunch time. While you are discussing a variety of foods (and how to keep peers, who have food allergies, safe), ask your child what he would like to eat for breakfast. A great night’s sleep is equally as important as a full belly on the first day of school, and every day thereafter.

6.While you will probably want to select his or her outfit a few days or the night before, why not provide your child with a special handmade bracelet or a charm necklace that symbolizes “love from home” or a mantra that says, “The first day is all about introductions”?

The one thing students forget to consider is how their teachers may be feeling prior to the start of school. While it may be hard to believe, teachers also have “back-to-school jitters.” In anticipating a new school year, they hope to have a great class with eager boys and girls, good intriguing lessons, enough time to eat lunch, and a sound night’s sleep the night before. Just remember, while students are tossing and turning, so are the teachers. It will be a great day of introductions; therefore, continue to say the words, “It’s going to be a great day! It’s going to be a great day!”

Organized For School Means More Than Just New Supplies

s students begin to realize how little time is left to bask in summer’s idleness, the words “new,” “start,” and “first” can spark the curiosity and excite students of all ages. For many, it will be a return to friends, familiar routines and expectations. There is excitement in choosing a new backpack and having new pencils, spiral notebooks and folders. These are the tools that may encourage a new friendship or earn the best grades yet. It’s okay to allow superstition to influence this moment. In fact, foster your child’s curiosity with conversations that include ways to become a better student. While the tools can help a student be prepared, he or she will need a viable study plan to have a great year that balances school responsibilities and extracurricular activities with social interaction.

Reflecting on the Past Yes, to move forward, students will need to think about last year. All the answers are right there. Some will take time to process individual areas like organization, time management, note taking, studying habits, testing and stress levels, and many students will need assistance with this. Writing down the answers is a necessity for the next step.

• checking off completed assignments. It’s a great feeling to look at your planner and know every task was finished. (Long-term assignments should be started immediately. By doing a little bit each night, you no longer have to worry about “cramming” a large percentage of your marking period into one weekend.)

• making sure all notes have the day’s date. If the handwriting is unclear, take the time to recopy. (Just reading your class notes on a daily basis will boost understanding and improve test scores.)

• correcting all quizzes and tests, too. You never know when the same question will appear at a later date.

• Students who study for more than an hour at a time need a break.

Give yourself at least ten minutes.

What is Needed?

Studying is a process; therefore, you need “tools” to help you remember exactly what you need to know. Consider trying:

• Define what being a successful student means for you.

• Flash cards. Whether it’s for a weekly vocabulary test, biology terms or historical events, flash cards will help you study independently or with assistance.

• In what areas could you improve? Think about those moments when you felt disappointed by a grade, or wished you would have completed an assignment or project differently.

• Writing in color. Yes, studies have shown that we can remember more acutely if writing is presented in color; therefore, review notes with a red pen in hand.

• What would you like to accomplish this year?

• The Cornell Note Method is a note-taking system which separates classroom notes on the left half of a page with new clarifying or detailed information on the right. (Students who want to be better prepared for finals need to adopt this method.)

Making Promises Every student would like the process of reading, writing, calculating and studying to come naturally. Sometimes, we forget that each of us has a gift, and it takes time to figure out the tools needed to learn and process this most effectively; therefore, this year, start with a few promises. Perhaps you need a study schedule, a means to organize your time, or to eliminate the word “procrastination” from your vocabulary. Once you think about what promises you’d like to make, then comes the hardest part of all…create a plan that has room for breaks, time with family, and most importantly, time for you!

Creating a Plan Even elementary school students can create a plan. It begins with a promise to start homework at a particular hour, away from television and technology. Easy, right! Then, other aspects can be added, such as: • numbering your homework assignments from hardest (start with 1) to easiest. By completing the more challenging assignments first, you may feel more free when you begin working on your favorite subject.

Moms and boys, we speak the same language, right? No, we really don’t. What we think is a motivation or “incentive” for boys misses the mark, nearly every time. Here is a quick tutorial on what I like to call “Men-Centives.” How to get more out of our boys through incentivizing in their own language.

1. Less is more – make your first three words count, after that you are wasting your breath. Or better yet, ask them, “Have you seen the dirt on your face?” hand him a washcloth, he knows what to do, and smile.

Remember humor is their native tongue.

2. Know what matters to him − what the neighbors think will never matter, what DOES matter to him is “his stuff.” Invite him to choose an out-of-the-way-of-traffic place for his gear. Suggest that if he puts it in the same place every day, he will always know where it is and no one will bother it.

3. Personal Hygiene − believe it or not, this will be a priority for them when they start dating. Until then, you can hint, beg, plea and bribe. OR give them an alternate of choice: do you want to shower before dinner or before bed? You control the outcome, they control the timing. Everyone wins.

4. Messy, missing or mildewed − teach them how to do their own laundry. Boys (and girls) should really be doing this as early as possible. If it’s your chore, it’s your responsibility to keep track of it, all of it. But it’s not YOUR laundry. Once it’s their responsibility, if it is missing, mildewed or messy, this unpleasant experience is what we call “a natural consequence.” With any luck, this will happen only once, maybe twice.

5. Guilt, martyr, nag or complain − let’s face it: Mom to Mom, these are female motivators and even we hate them. Emotional arguments are illogical to the male brain, which is wired for problem-solving. Define your mutual goals and ask them for help finding a logical solution.

arenting is hard. Kids don’t come with how-to manuals. And when it comes to parenting our kids, one size does not fit all. All clichés. And all-too true. “Parenting Perspectives” explores various parenting topics from the perspective of two parents who are at (By Lisa Doss) I love the questioning phrase, “Nature or nurture?” As parents, we can be knowledgeable on almost every subject except one— technology I thought a two- year-old child would need guidance in learning how to use a Kindle. I downloaded age-appropriate puzzles and preschool games, helped her get started, and assisted when she became frustrated. A few weeks later, my hand was pushed away and I was told, “Mommy, I do it!” Of course, I sat back and watched her maneuver in complete astonishment. She figured out how to swipe the screen, drag, tap and move the game along with or without the directive cues. She was computer savvy well before I discovered all the little nuances of the machine.

While I feared making the slightest mistake, my girl was confident and learned through trial and error. It’s clear, nature won.

Today's generation is technologically capable. It is a natural ability, and I couldn’t keep her from an early introduction. Her soft-bound workbooks and school textbooks will soon be replaced with some form of download on her iPad. Technology will constantly surround her, and continue to advance. One day, my daughter will have an iPad, iPod, cell phone and some other great gadget, but she, like so many others, will also need to communicate, play, take a turn and learn social cues without hiding behind technology. It is a different generation and time.

I pray she’ll learn that being “off line” is the start of really living.

(By Willy Minnix) If you read my article in “Parenting Perspectives” last month, you will see that technology costs something in my house. Part of the reason for that is, I do not want my kids having access to a lot of the garbage that is out there. I have tried a lot of different filters, Qustodio, K9 Web Filter, etc. They all work to varying degrees, but the key is to be vigilant.

I think the important thing about teaching kids the dangers of technology is to teach kids the danger of the end results of where technology can lead. I try to teach my kids that pornography is not a victimless crime. It demeans “your future wife,” “your sister,” “your mother” (I find if it is personal, it makes more sense to them). And it can be a habit that is very hard to break.

Researching illegal things, like certain types of file sharing, drugs, weapons, gambling, etc. can lead to engaging in those types of activities. It might not always, but it can, and why waste time on that? Also, with certain searches these days, who knows if the feds are watching you? So why bother?

Finally, in my former occupation, I was a pastor. We always had addicts in our lives. I never tried to shield my kids from recovering addicts, but tried to get them to share their testimony with my kids about how hard it is to become clean. I think that helped them put a face to the problem, rather than thinking that the Internet is just an anonymous playground for any kind of evil imaginable.

Small Stories for a Big World

M

any things that I fantasize about buying for my family would cost serious money. For one, Garnet would like to build a little house in the back yard where she could have her art studio. She would also like to have a farm where she could keep giraffes, llamas and the other animals she would like to share her life.

If that kind of money is coming into our lives one day, I don’t yet know about it. I do have $35, though. So imagine my delight when I discovered that $35 was all I needed to add pizzazz to both Garnet and Sparkle Girl’s lives.

First, a little history: Many years ago, I bought a vintage chrome toaster. It was quite beautiful. I soon discovered, though, that it was not designed for the modern world. It could toast white bread—the bread of the day when it was made—perfectly. However, toasting dense whole-wheat bread required two rounds of toasting and, with its thin slots, toasting a bagel was out of the question.

Still, I liked the character it added to my kitchen, and we lived together happily until the day came when it ascended to Toaster Heaven. When I bought a replacement, wide slots for bagels and a timer that would turn far enough to take care of dense bread were at the top my list. My new toaster was plain white with nary a spot of chrome or stainless steel to catch the eye. But it did what it was asked to do without complaint. So I was content.

Little did I realize, though, that Garnet and Sparkle Girl dreamed of a toaster that did more than simply toast the wheat bread we use to make Doobins’ peanut butter& honey toast. They wanted one that brought pop to the kitchen. They even knew the toaster they wanted.

Garnet had come upon it one day while shopping for something else. It was a snappy dresser whose sides were covered with colorful diamonds of sky blue, magenta, canary yellow and a shade of green that brings to mind the first grass of spring.

Garnet and Sparkle Girl said nothing, though, and continued to treat our toaster with dignity and respect. It was only when Mr. Ordinary’s days on this sweet Earth came to an end that Garnet spoke. The toaster was no longer available in the store but could be ordered online. That we did.

The day it came, Garnet and Sparkle Girl spoke of its charms when I called home to check in. Not only were its colors delightful on their own, it turned out that they went quite well with the painting that hangs above the spot where the toaster lives. Sparkle Girl was taken with a feature that we didn’t even know it had when we ordered it.

After unplugging the cord, you push a button and the cord retracts.

And, as for executing its duties, Sparkle Girl reported it toasted the bread uniformly.

I had no idea that a new toaster would generate such enthusiasm.

When I came home that night, Sparkle Girl demonstrated the retracting cord. And they were right, the toaster did look good with the picture.

Garnet and Sparkle Girl had already decorated the rest of the house with delightful art and vintage particulars. Now, with our new toaster, I think we’re ready at last for a spread in Charm on a Budget magazine.

n Friday, May 29th, the 6th-annual SciWorks Gala was held at Old Town Club. Nearly 300 guests gathered to support the local SciWorks Museum of Forsyth County.

The event was initiated in 2010 by the SciWorks Board of Directors to help raise awareness in our community that SciWorks is a place which inspires young minds and creative thinking—Where Innovation Begins! This year’s theme was “Spark,” representing how the informal learning taking place every day at SciWorks can ignite a lifelong interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math).

This year’s Co-Chairs were Sara & Drew Cannon and Shelley & David Holden, with longtime supporters Kandra & Rob Greene serving as Honorary Chairs. There was an exciting Live Auction that included bidding on a week-long stay in an Idaho house, an Italian dinner for eight prepared in the winner’s home, being a “Doctor for a Day,” being a “Meteorologist for a Day” and many more appealing items. There were also “Games of Chance” in which guests could win amazing prizes thanks to the generosity and support of local businesses. More than $175,000 was raised at the event, the majority of which is used for educational programming and exhibits at SciWorks.

BB&T was the Title Sponsor and Wake Forest Medical Center was the Presenting Sponsor, in addition to many other local business and independent sponsors. The event was successful due to the support from these contributors and the many volunteers who dedicated their time and efforts.

Minute for Your Minister Praying for Pastors Delayed but not Dismayed

By Tami Rumfelt In the wise words of Chuck Swindoll, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.”

It had been a long day of traveling following a week and a half of mission work in Guatemala. Our group was ready to be home, reuniting with family members and sleeping in our own beds. However, our patience was put to the test when our connecting flight changed departure gates three times and was delayed for over an hour.

I was pleased to observe the positive attitudes maintained by our group’s members, despite our anxiousness to get home. We used the delay as an opportunity to grab some dinner and spend some more time chatting with each other before we would have to part ways.

Unfortunately, not everyone on our flight was able to keep the same kind of positive outlook. One passenger in particular caught our attention…a minister we overheard loudly complaining into his cell phone about the delay. He told the person on the other end of the line that he still didn’t have tomorrow’s sermon written because the airline kept delaying his flight. One of our team members whispered, “What he doesn’t realize is that God just gave him an extra hour to get that sermon done.”

My friend’s insight was spot-on and made me wonder how many times I’ve gotten wrapped up in a frustrating situation and missed out on the blessing God was trying to hand me. We’ve all been there before, haven’t we? But Romans 8:28 assures us “that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

If we believe God’s word to be true, than we ought to trust that no matter what situation we face, God can, and will, use it for our good.

Perhaps we only feel effective praying when we are on our knees at some special time when we set aside life for an hour. But Christians know we are called to pray “without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). What does that look like? Well, it includes the meal blessing and the “sweet hour of prayer,” but beyond that it is an honest sharing of our every thought with God. For me, that continual sharing often leads me into prayer for specific people that come to mind as I think about day-to-day circumstances; family, friends, missionaries, those unsaved, antagonists, ministry leaders, persecuted believers and others.

My pastor is another that must be on that list. When I think about the people that I pray for, the pastor isn’t usually the one with the most urgent need, nor is his need generally the most immediate.

But in the big picture, his impact for the Kingdom of God is immeasurable, and his need for prayer very significant. Under his watch, the faithful are nurtured. In turn, they use their gifts to minister, including to those on my prayer list.

The pastor’s influence reaches far beyond his own actions. A pastor may never open an orphanage, but someone in his congregation may, and many others may support it. He may never minister directly to the persecuted church, but the youth in the back row (who never seem to be paying attention) may fill that role. There are innumerable things a pastor will never do himself, but thanks to his ministry, his congregation will. That ministry can be awesome at times. At others it can feel like a 24/7/365 parade of pettiness, minutia, tragedy, failure, thanklessness, criticism and struggle—that he never speaks of. Discouragement and a weakened ministry can result.

hen you hear a child is hungry, your first instinct is to help. What do you do when it becomes a small population of students in your school community? Even though the answer may seem simple, it takes a compassionate leader to initiate a program that encourages the staff, parents, students, volunteers, community organizations and businesses to come together. For the principal of Lewisville Elementary School, Angie Choplin, the food pantry campaign is founded on the giving spirit of the Lewisville community.

The first obstacle should have been an appropriate location for storing supplies; except underneath the gymnasium was the former high school’s locker room. Volunteers happily came forward to clean and create shelving. Dispersing canned vegetables and meats in back packs led to the realization that parents needed a can opener among other basic items, such as paper towels or a variety of toiletry items.

Help was needed. Businesses in the community gladly stepped forward. Thanks to a matching grant totaling $3,000 from the Western Forsyth Rotary Club, Lowe’s Food delivered monthly well-needed supplies. The Methodist Church of Lewisville graciously offered to provide clothes and shoes according to size.

Karen Bowen, a lead volunteer, has been a vital part in organizing, labeling, determining how to distribute food, assessing supply needs and ensuring the system ran smoothly. Bowen writes, “In pulling this together, I became interested in making our food pantry unique.

Families now receive recipes to understand how to extend the pantry items and provide variety to the meals. While children need a wellbalanced diet, they also can enjoy, like other kids, breakfast bars, cracker snacks and even pop tarts. With the purchase of a refrigerator, students can begin to enjoy

yogurt, cheese and other dairy items this fall. My wish is to give the best possible food to our children and their families.”

Principal Choplin is passionate about the Food Pantry Program. She writes, “It breaks my heart to know that even one child, or their family, may be hungry some nights or during the weekends. In knowing our staff feel the same way, creating the Food Pantry became essential.

Children must have their basic needs met before they can focus and learn in class. If we, as a school community, can help them be prepared to learn by sending home food, then we are going to send home food! We are going to do whatever it takes to make sure our students are successful. We are a family, and that is what families do for one another.”

The children are thrilled to be part this program. Jessica Plasencia, the School Counselor, writes, “The students truly get excited to get their bag of food for the week, and are so appreciative of what is in it. They can’t wait to look and see the contents and are well aware of the positive impact that the food will [have on] their family that week.

Students have written comments such as, ‘We get to have food and get to save money,’ or, ‘It makes it so we don’t have to go to the store so much, and we don’t have to waste our money.’ They always leave my office with a smile and a very enthusiastic ‘Thank you!’ I am so proud to be part of this wonderful program!” Any story of individuals helping others is always heartfelt. The scope broadens when the focus becomes a school community. Leadership had the vision and parents offered support. Lewisville Elementary School is undoubtedly teaching, living and witnessing the power of giving.

Mouth Guards Protect Your Winning Smile

With summer time coming to an end and school just around the corner, children will be starting fall sports soon. It’s so important for your child to wear a mouth guard during sports to protect not only their teeth, but also their lips, cheeks and tongue. There are several different types of mouth guards to consider.

Stock Mouth Guards: These mouth guards are the least expensive type. They typically come in “youth” and “adult” sizes or Small, Medium, and Large. They tend to wear quicker than other types and may need to be replaced during the sports season. These mouth guards can be purchased at athletic and sporting goods stores.

Boil and Bite Mouth Guards: These mouth guards are also available at athletic and sporting goods stores. They are boiled for a short period of time and formed to the teeth with pressure.

While these may not wear as quickly as stock mouth guards, they still may need to be replaced during the sports season.

Vacuum Formed Mouth Guards: This type of mouth guard is custom made by your dentist using an impression taken of the mouth.

The process takes a couple of days, however the custom fit ensures that all of the teeth are covered during wear.

Because children lose teeth and their bite changes, they may need to have a new mouth guard made at the beginning of each sports season.

t’s 7:15—my neighbor Sue waves smiling as she heads off to work. Sue is single, no kids, not a hair out of place, without a care in the world. I used to be Sue. Now I am a mother of two under 5; I am Sisyphus, doomed to a life of struggle to get 8 long steps to my car. Even a trip to the pool is a challenge.

I soldier on, balancing a 600 lb. diaper bag and an 800 lb. toddler. Deftly, I scoop up my shoeless 4-year-old, narrowly missing the sprinkler. I am feeling triumphant, shoulders squared, only 7 more steps. And, wait, what?! My hem is stuck in the closed AND LOCKED front door. Thankfully, my toddler is gumming the keys. It is now 7:23.

Batteries rolling around the junk drawer? Here’s how to find out if they are still good. Drop a battery about six inches above a table. If it bounces one time and falls, over it’s good. If it bounces more than once it is dead or on the way out.

Participates in

The Crescent City Choral Festival

T

his year, the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus (WSYC) had the opportunity to participate in the 16th Annual Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans. The festival enables children’s and youth choruses from throughout the country to come together and sing beautiful choral works under the direction of national and international guest conductors.

“The Crescent City Choral Festival is a festival for treble and mixed choirs from throughout the nation held in downtown New Orleans,” said Lori Prescott, Executive Director of the WSYC. “June 25th−30th marked the 16th year for the event that is hosted by the New Orleans Children's Chorus. Young singers had the opportunity to work with native New Orleans conductor Cheryl Dupont and guest artist Bob Chilcott, commissioned composer from England, and sing with other choirs in one of America’s historic cities. By performing with these festivals in other cities, it gives our youth an opportunity to meet and form relationships with other singers who have a passion for music and provides them with experiences they may never be given elsewhere. It also enables them to learn from other directors from all over the world and helps them grow in their musical discipline.”

The WSYC sent 32 singers to participate in the festival. “There were 14 different choruses (370 total singers) from throughout the nation that joined together in a mass choir to perform beautiful choral works in the historic St. Louis Cathedral,” said Prescott. “In addition to North Carolina being represented by the WSYC, there were choirs from California, Wyoming, Illinois, Georgia, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, Mississippi, Washington, Texas, Minnesota and Virginia.”

Participating in this festival took months of preparation. “We started working on some of the festival pieces about two months before we left for New Orleans,” said Prescott. “The Winston-Salem Youth Chorus was able to perform a short concert of our music as a part of the pre-festival, which included songs such as ‘Cantate Domino,’ ‘Corner of the Sky,’ ‘Dome Epais,’ ‘Rocky Top,’ ‘Gloria’ from Vivaldi's Gloria and ‘Bonse Alba.’ The songs performed by the

370 singers as a part of the festival concert in the cathedral on June 29th were as follows: the Mass Treble Choir sang ‘How Can I Keep from Singing,’ ‘No Time,’ ‘Homeland,’ and premiered a piece by Bob Chilcott entitled, ‘New Orleans Canticles.’ The Mass Mixed Choir sang ‘Glory to God’ from The Messiah, ‘Sing Me to Heaven,’ ‘He Never Failed Me Yet’ and ‘Nidaros Jazz Mass.’ The combined mass choir of both treble and mixed choruses performed ‘The Abolition of Slavery’ from Five Days That Changed the World and ‘May the Road Rise to Meet You.’” Those interested in learning more about the WSYC and possibly becoming part of it have an opportunity this month!

“The next round of auditions for the WSYC takes place August 17th−20th,” said Prescott. “The WSYC is known as the preeminent youth chorus in our city and region. It is open to youth ages eight to 18 who pass a standard audition. Singers learn proper vocal technique, music theory, performance and sight-singing skills, music culture and songs in other languages. The WSYC brings together children from a variety of backgrounds to learn teamwork and tolerance while building lasting friendships based on the universal language of music. This encompasses the mission of the WSYC and enriches the lives of our youth by inspiring excellence in choral music. The chorus often collaborates with the W-S Symphony, Piedmont Opera, Piedmont Wind Symphony, Piedmont Chamber Singers and the UNC School of the Arts.”

Why I Teach!

tanding in line of a grocery store, have you ever wondered about the individuals surrounding you? Everyone, from the very tall to the very small, has a gift that makes them exceptional. It may be a form of counseling or the ability to communicate and listen, offer leadership and instruction, or work with people young or old. In every capacity, we find ourselves in the role of a teacher. The label, of course, conjures up images of classrooms and desks, students in perfect rows and the task of providing instructional lessons, interacting with students and grading papers and tests. Is there more to it? When asked, “Why do you teach?” most adults will claim, “There is empowerment in helping others fulfill their dreams.”

Michael Roels, co-owner of Essential Balanced Bodywork in Clemmons, writes, “I became a teacher when my three-year-old little brother started following me around the house. I went to my mom and asked why he would do such a thing. She said, “He is your little brother.

He will always want to be like you, and do the things you like doing.” I remember thinking, if that is the case, I will teach him everything I know.

Maybe, he’ll be better than me.” He became, by far, the best swimmer, and scored 50 points in a basketball game at the age of 12. It was an awesome feeling to see my brother excelling at something while having so much fun. Years later, after [I had had] a severe car accident, I was given the opportunity to become a massage instructor. The students inspired me by their determination, kindness and eagerness to learn. It may have started with my brother, but I learned through teaching that I could share my own personal insights and experiences to make my students become amazing therapists.

Chef Al Romano is an instructor of culinary arts at Guilford Technical Community College. He writes, “I love seeing young people grow. They start out so green, full of desire, ready to take on anything.

You can tell the ones that are going to be good. They have an ‘Eye of the Tiger’ passion flowing through their veins. Others need a kick in the butt to get them going. They all have talent at different levels and can really make a difference. The saddest thing is wasted talent, and you’d be surprised who has it! I love seeing my former students go out into the industry and make their mark. A few years after graduating, some have achieved chef positions, are running kitchens, or even own their own business. A few months ago, Winston-Salem featured various restaurants in the area through a ‘Fire in the Triad’ cooking competition.

I was asked to judge. Many of the chefs competing were former students of mine. I am proud of their success! I teach to give back and make a difference. I may not change the world, but if I can change one person for the better, I made the world a better place.”

Preschool teacher Stephanie Thomas shares, “I am taller than all of my three-year-old students. I have lived over three decades longer. I have graduated from college. Nothing has prepared me for the daily lessons I learn from my students each and every day. I often wonder who is the teacher, and who is the student?”

Back to School – Doing it Right

By Rebecca Olsen Summer is almost over, and the first day of school is around the corner! Little and big kids will be donning shiny new backpacks and the latest lunch boxes to head into our city’s noble institutions of learning. Of course, perhaps your child doesn’t see it as a noble institution at all. Perhaps she is lying under a clothing rack at JC Penny’s crying that she doesn’t want to buy new school clothes, to make new friends, or to go to school. (To the harried mother—you handled this well. While yes, I might have been staring, I wasn’t judging.) Or maybe your child’s feelings are more mixed and he is eager to leave the boredom of summer behind, but dreading the drudgery of school work ahead. If so, as a teacher, I can identify. While I am not causing scenes at department stores, there is a small part of me that nodded along with each little howl I heard emitted from beneath that clearance rack. The transition from the freedom and flexibility of summer schedules to the structure necessary during the school year is a dramatic one that can be hard on us all. Here are some ways to make it a little easier.

1. Set routines early and stick out the rough “start-up” patch. As the parent, you get to decide—will homework come before, or after, dinner? Will bed time be 8 or 9 o’clock? Whatever you decide, make those decisions before school starts and stick to them. Reinforcing behaviors is much easier than correcting behaviors. Talk to your children and prepare them for the change in schedule that is about to happen. Begin making the transition between summer bed times and school bed times before the first week of school. If your child is tired and leaving a puddle of drool on his desk in class every morning, he’s probably not getting the most out of his education (not to mention the snoring can be very distracting).

2. Get organized. Where will book bags be stored when children walk through the door? How will your child keep up with projects and assignments?

Where will your child complete his homework? Will you use a family-wide calendar? How will your child know what is expected of him or her each day? Will you post a checklist? Thinking through these procedures before school starts will make the transition much easier, even if you have to adapt them as the school year progresses.

3. Check your child’s backpack daily. This is such a simple task, but one a lot of parents miss. Is your child bringing papers home that need to be signed? Is her work being graded and returned? Even middle schoolers need a parent to hold them accountable and act as a liaison. Is she recording her homework in her agenda? Is he completing projects? Staying on top of a child’s assignments and monitoring them as they are returned will mean there are no surprises when report cards come home.

4. Write your child’s name on everything—and I do mean everything. This is another strategy frequently overlooked, but every year we take multiple loads of abandoned, nameless clothing to the local Goodwill. Most students don’t even know they’ve lost these items, usually coats and sweatshirts; but these occasionally include the miscellaneous pair of underwear or shoes. 5. Meet your child’s teacher. Of the thousands of kids I have taught, I have only met a small fraction of their parents. If you asked me, I would tell you that parental involvement is essential for a child to get the most out of his or her education. What I won’t tell you is that when you show interest in your child’s learning and I know we’re partnering together, I’m going to go the extra mile for your child. When I know we’re both working to help your child learn discipline and excellence, I’m going to be rooting for her to succeed.

6. Be positive. No one likes homework; not the students; not the teachers who have to grade it. No one likes getting up early; not the students waiting in the cold for the bus; not the teachers guzzling coffee as buses arrive. It’s sometimes hard to get excited about education because, let’s face it, it’s a daily sacrifice. But it’s also an investment that will pay off in the future when you see your child walk across the stage, diploma in hand.

So put on your game face, because change is coming! Yet a few thoughtful steps can help make that change easier to handle, and that summer to school transition a little smoother, so that when the first day arrives, your child is happily wearing a new outfit, ready to make some new friends, and excited about a new school year (assuming, of course, you can get her out from under the clothing rack)!

Celebrates Opening of New Dance-nastics Studio

here are many great ways to keep your children active and healthy!

Many kids are involved in sports, ballet, karate, etc., and Salem Gymnastics is offering you a way to get your kids involved in something that combines two of the favorites—gymnastics and dance!

“Dance-nastics focuses on the whole child,”

“Dance-nastics is a program that combines gymnastics with ballet and either tap or jazz, all in one convenient class,” said Co-owner Beth Morphis. “Dancenastics is for girls and boys from age three through middle school, with new students welcomed every week.

For 35 years, the Salem Dance Studio has operated in the back corner of Salem Gymnastics. With such a high ceiling and no permanent walls, the sounds of gymnastics and karate have been quite distracting for our dancers, and it has been almost impossible for parents to observe class. Our new Dance-nastics studio is located inside the former Fitkids room, providing a quiet space that features new mirrors, new bars and a new dance floor. It also has windows that allow parents to watch class without distracting the dancers.”

Because of the 30+ years of experience working with kids of all ages, Salem Gymnastics understands the best ways to get the most out of whatever activity we choose to take part in. Knowing the way the body works and how to take care of it while exercising and having fun is of the utmost importance. “Like all programs at Salem Gymnastics, Dance-nastics focuses on the whole child,” said Morphis. “By combining traditional dance with gymnastics, students work not only on upright movements, but upside-down ones, too. They strengthen both their upper and lower bodies and experience the full offerings of gymnastics training, including all Olympic events, plus trampoline. Our students think this is just a variety of fun activities, but we know that active children are not only more fit, they perform better in the classroom as well. This is why we want to keep our children moving in as many varied and challenging ways as we can, building a love for movement that lasts a lifetime.”

For the parents, Salem Gymnastics organizes a “Gold Medal Day Recital” for all the kids to show off what they have learned! “Our streamlined ‘Gold Medal Day Recital’ is unlike any other in town,” said Morphis. “In less than one hour, our students perform their dances on the big stage inside Salem Gymnastics Sports Center, show off their gymnastics moves on the Olympic equipment, and head home wearing a shiny commemorative Gold Medal. There is no charge for recital tickets and no charge for wearing our beautiful costumes. Age-appropriate, modest choreography and costumes ensure our dancers will have an ‘all-American’ dance experience. Salem Gymastics’ ‘Gold Medal Day Recital’ is easy for our families and is confidence-building, memorable fun for our students! Additionally, Salem Gymnastics’ Acro Dance teams train twice each week and compete in local, regional and national competitions. Our 2015 Acro Team will compete this month in the World Dance Championships! Acro Dance teams are offered for dancers ages seven and older.

Wild Watermelon Summer Fun

othing conjures up summer fun like a slice of freshly cut, juicy watermelon. While many people enjoy watermelon as its own entrée, this delicious summer fruit can also be used to create refreshing summer dishes. Create these succulent summer recipes with the kids to mix up your watermelon options and cool off from the hot summer sun.

Avocado, Watermelon, & Cucumber Salad

By Kristi Johnson Marion Take advantage of the local farmers’ markets and garden surplus with this fresh summer salad!

2 avocados, pitted and cubed 1 small seedless watermelon, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 cucumbers, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes 2 Tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 Tablespoon olive oil 3 cups spinach, romaine or other green leaf lettuce ⅓ cup freshly chopped cilantro (or mint or basil) salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1.In a large bowl, drizzle avocado with olive oil and lime juice and gently stir to coat.

2.In another large bowl, toss cubed watermelon and cucumber together.

3.Add the avocado mixture on top of the watermelon and cucumbers.

4.Sprinkle with chopped cilantro or mint or basil and season with salt and pepper to taste.

5.Serve on top of spinach or lettuce.

Watermelon Salsa 1 cup diced, unpeeled orange 1 Tablespoon sugar 3 Tablespoons fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons orange zest 2 cups seeded and diced watermelon ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro ⅓ cup diced red onion ¼ cup finely chopped fresh mint Directions: 1.Stir together first 4 ingredients in a large bowl; let stand 15 minutes.

2.Add watermelon and next 3 ingredients, and gently toss to coat.

3.Serve immediately, or cover and chill up to 24 hours.

Watermelon Lime Pops 1 small seedless watermelon, chopped (about 5 cups) ⅓ cup sugar ⅓ cup fresh lime juice pinch fine salt Directions: 1.Puree the watermelon, sugar, lime juice and salt in a blender until smooth.

2.Pour the mixture into your favorite ice-pop molds, dividing evenly.

A World Without Heroes, Book 1: The Beyonders Series

By Brandon Mull Genre: Fantasy Age Range: 8 to 12 years old Reviewed by Lisa S.T. Doss In this fantasy series, the protagonist has won. Lyrian is a world without heroes. Those who tried to outsmart or challenge the wizard emperor Maldor never returned home; therefore, the people live in fear and in great suspicion of others. When a hero is needed, Jason Walker is suddenly transported from the “Beyond” to Lyrian, and meets another “Beyonder,” named Rachel. Together, they agree to visit select guardians who hold pieces of the “word of power,” which can ultimately destroy the emperor and save the world. Despite the betrayals and odd rescues, the escapes and tight squeezes, readers will enjoy the story that delivers an exciting adventure soon after opening the book. Two of the most fascinating characters are Ferrin, a “displacer,” who can detach and reattach body parts; and Jasher, a “seed person,” who can regenerate himself to live multiple lives. Despite the cliffhanger ending, young readers can immediately delve into the sequel, The Seeds of Rebellion.

Theo dreams of being a lawyer, spending his afternoons at the courthouse watching trials while other kids are joining after-school clubs or playing sports. As the child of two lawyers, though, what can you expect? He’s already established himself as the unofficial legal advisor at his middle school in Strattenburg, doling out advice on everything from custody to bankruptcy. But when Leo is handed evidence that could convict a man for murder, he finds himself in the middle of a legal battle far beyond his ability to handle. While Kid Lawyer lacks the intensity found in his previous works, Grisham’s debut young-adult novel is written in his easy-to-read style which makes the law accessible to those of us less legally well-versed, and lays the groundwork for future works in this series.

I was a huge fan of Harvey Karp’s The Happiest Baby on the Block. In this book, Dr. Karp, seasoned specialist on childhood development and Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA School of Medicine, offered practical tools and techniques to soothe any fussy infant. In The Happiest Toddler on the Block, Karp shares his techniques for calming toddler tantrums, outbursts and more. This book goes in depth into the four stages of a toddler’s growth and brain development, and connects it to prehistoric caveman life.

The Happiest Toddler on the Block features a stage-by-stage approach that teaches parents to speak “Toddler-ese,” a monkey-sounding language to communicate, empathize and get through to toddlers in the midst of a tantrum. Using this language and other strategic steps, Karp promises to transform your little caveman into a happy and cooperative little tike.

While I have enjoyed reading about the brain development of my little man, I haven’t implemented all of Karp’s techniques. I have tried some of the caveman communication Karp recommends, such as using a deep tone, simple words and repetition. I must admit, several times it at least got my toddler’s attention. However, I am still not convinced that any book can quell all toddler tantrums.
