here’s no place like home!

Dorothy certainly said it well, there really is no place like home and with that we welcome our first official Fall Home Edition Issue. While a home is so much more than bricks and mortar, a wise homeowner knows we need to care for them like any other living thing. Featuring Isenhour Homes on our cover this month was a perfect beginning for what we plan to make an annual feature to coincide with the annual spring and fall Parade of Homes. Whether you’re buying your first starter home or planning your dream house, may you find helpful information within this section on pages 42 through 65 to keep your home at its best!

I’ve been in my current home for going on 15 years now. That’s the longest we’ve stayed planted anywhere in my almost 27 years of being married. It was the first home Tim and I built, and we’ve loved it ever since. However, I’m very sad this month as my closest neighbor, Suzie, is moving! She’s been close by for most of the time we’ve been in this house. And so it will be very strange to not see her out walking her two dogs, Charlie and Buster, with cat Annabelle tagging along, or working out in her yard and flower beds. I kid you not, the cat follows behind! Good neighbors are not always easy to find and when you have a good one, you sure hate to see them go! She’s become much more than a neighbor over the years, so to my dear friend, Suzie, please know you will be missed more than you know!

Speaking of Dorothy earlier, we’re off to see the Wizard this month! For one weekend in October, Beech Mountain opens up the now defunct Land of Oz theme park. We’ve wanted to go for years and are finally making it happen! I hope you have a wonderful October, there’s certainly plenty to do this month in our community!

With all the new technology coming into our world almost daily, it is no surprise that it has made its way into orthodontics. While braces may seem like a simple concept, the technology behind them has made great strides in recent years, and orthodontic care is better than ever!

At the forefront of these new technologies are Drs. Chermak and Hanson, who pride themselves on offering the latest and greatest methods of care to their patients. “Braces have changed a lot over the years,” said Dr. Chermak. “Your parents’ braces and wires were made of stainless steel, which was very stiff, and were tied tightly to each brace. The old system put huge forces on the teeth, thereby hurting [patients] a lot and binding and stopping movement quickly. This is why braces hurt for weeks and required you to return to the office very often for ‘tightening.’ The more modern braces and wires which we are using are made of materials developed by NASA and are not tied tightly to each other. This allows for less force on the teeth and less binding. For the patient, that means minimal soreness that also subsides quickly, and less frequent visits to the office for adjustments—especially appealing to busy moms and teens!”

Drs. Chermak and Hanson have always dedicated their practice to the patient experience as a whole and not just the outcome of straight teeth. “Teeth are connected to people, and people are who we treat,” said Dr. Hanson. “We help the patient achieve better health and boost self-esteem by achieving a balanced dentofacial complex, of which teeth 10 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

are only one small part. When a child that is at the beginning of treatment would not smile and was embarrassed to talk with people finishes treatment with a huge smile, head and shoulders held high and a whole new confident personality blossoming, it is clear that it’s about more than just straight teeth.” Dr. Hanson relays a story about a wise professor he had in orthodontic training that made the residents walk around without showing anyone their teeth for two days and then write a paper about their experience. He says it was the most eye-opening experience of his orthodontic training. It gave a small glimpse into what it feels like to be embarrassed by your teeth. He never forgot it.

The training Drs. Chermak and Hanson received gave them both remarkable respect for their patients, as well as for the community that would eventually support their practice. “Drs. Chermak and Hanson have long and strong roots in the community (no pun intended),” said Gina Brannock, Practice Administrator at Chermak & Hanson. “They are raising their children here, attend school and church here, and intend to practice here for many years. They are committed to serving the community of patients that have responded so favorably to them and their excellence in orthodontic care. [The doctors] and their employees give back to the community in many ways, big and small. One example would be our recent volunteer work with the Ronald McDonald House, when the whole practice volunteered on the luminary campaign and made lunches for residents staying at the House. The practice has also focused more on

customer service. In addition to some of the things we’ve always done, like filing insurance claims on the patients’ behalf, minimizing patient wait times and greeting patients by name, we now offer free WIFI in the waiting room, have certified all our patient-relation coordinators on phone courtesy and have real people answering the phone during lunch and on non-patient days, when most offices provide an answering service.”

While all this added attention to detail may sound expensive, rest assured, it does not have to be. “Unfortunately, people think braces are ‘expensive,’” said Dr. Hanson. “As a matter of fact, they are one of the most economical types of treatment you can receive from any healthcare provider. Orthodontists attend the same number of years of training as medical specialists. Think of what it would cost to see your cardiologist every month for two years and have reconstructive surgery along the way! We offer interest-free payment plans in-office for the length of treatment and file your insurance for you. In most cases, this turns out to be less than many people’s monthly cell phone bill! hen thinking of pediatric and adolescent medicine, most of us think of very young children getting checkups, immunizations and routine exams. While that is the focus for many practices in the area, Robinhood Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine also places emphasis on the importance of teen healthcare.

ith a little over a year “in the saddle” as a riding academy, owner Jamie Jankowicz and her staff at Legacy Saddlebreds have experienced the victories and changes that have come from their labor of love.

The Ride of a Lifetime It’s been quite a ride for Jamie. Jamie moved to NC in the fall of 2010 and began teaching riding lessons for a local Riding Academy. In the winter of 2012-2013, she started Legacy Saddlebreds as a Saddlebred training barn. With growth came new construction: Legacy Saddlebreds’ new facility broke ground a year ago, and now students have much more that adds to their experience.

Celebrating a Year of ViCtories & Changes

“In the past year, the facility has grown in many ways. When we first started construction in September 2014, there was one indoor arena with an attached 6-stall barn. We have added on to that barn, which is our Show Barn, with 20 more stalls, two tack rooms, a laundry room, feed room and climate-controlled viewing lounge, equipped with a PA system and video cameras that stream into the lounge. The stall areas and arena are now heated for the winter months and cooled for the summer with large fans,” said John Jankowicz, Operations Manager. Once the construction was complete on the Show Barn, work began on the Lesson Barn, which has a climate-controlled lobby area with offices, a conference room and viewing lounge, with the same technology streaming into the lounge. It is also equipped with an indoor arena, a tack room, feed room, laundry room and break room, as well as a smaller riding ring for our beginner riders. The Lesson Barn is also heated and has large fans for year-round riding comfort. An old cabin that was on the property has been renovated to be an apparel and gift shop.

“Legacy Outfitters will open this fall and be a one-stop shop for our customers, complete with riding apparel, Legacy Saddlebreds merchandise, horse-related gifts and show accessories,” John commented.

There’s Something about Kids and Horses… a Winning Combination!

Not all of the students at Legacy Saddlebreds choose to compete, but those that do have seen great success, which begins with the right rider partnered with the right horse.

“Our highly trained riding instructors and trainers believe in having the right rider/horse team. The more they practice, especially in riding lessons, the better they perform if they compete. Our riders that compete, ride multiple times per week in various types of lessons; private to refine their skills, groups learn how to maneuver with many horses in the arena, and video review lessons help the riders to see what strengths and weaknesses they have in the show ring. We have had great success in the Academy Show Division, Performance Show Division and Equitation Show Divisions throughout the year. We took 7 horse/rider teams to the World Championship Horse Show and all 7 progressed through the qualifying round in their respective divisions with Top 8 placings, continuing to the championship round. In the finals, we had one Reserve World Champion of Champions, Katlyn Maser with Lady Gabriella, 2nd place; one Top 5, Stephanie Sanders with Ed’s Perfect Treat; and one Top 8, Carley Ramey with The Cowboy Casanova. Other World

Championship Team Members were Kylie Jankowicz and CH Manhattan's Irish Cream, Alaya McCarter and CH Story to Tell, Grace Weisner and My Sweet and Ashley Stewart and New York's Real Magic.

Ashley Stewart also represented the USA on the USEF Young Rider’s World Cup Team. The USA team swept the competition with all of the Gold Medal Awards,” stated Jeanine Lovell, Riding Academy Manager and Instructor. From the many accolades Legacy Saddlebreds has received, there’s much more going on than meets the eye.

The Feel of Family Makes the Difference “At Legacy Saddlebreds, we are first and foremost a family, as well as a team. Teaching our students to be supportive of their fellow riders and friends is very important to us. One of those riders is Juliana Ortiz.

Juliana, 10 years old, has been riding with Jamie since she was 6, with her family watching her progress in her abilities. “Juliana has learned so much about riding and caring for horses from Jamie and her staff.

She has also made great friends, and everyone is really a part of each other’s families. As a parent, seeing Juliana on this journey has been special; she has become a young lady with confidence, understanding the importance of compassion and accountability,” Dawn Ortiz, Juliana’s mom said. T

his haunted pumpkin cottage is a fun (and easy) project to do with your child.

The items needed are very inexpensive.

In fact, a few of them are conveniently found in your yard! You can choose to follow these instructions to the letter, or get creative and add your own flair to your cottage!

Instructions:

8.Cut out the ghosts and color in their eyes.

1.Use the pencil to lightly outline the door on your pumpkin for proper placement.

9.Use the glue dots to attach the ghosts to the cottage, keeping one back to add to the sign.

2.With the black marker, go over the pencil outline, then add hinges and a doorknob.

10. Speaking of the sign, cut a small square out of the white paper and write the name of your cottage on the square.

3.Draw vertical lines on the door to imitate slats.

11. Glue the square to the stick and then glue the bottom of the stick to one of the rocks to make it stand up. (In the picture, we used a tiny flower pot to hold our sign.)

4.On to the window! Use the black marker to draw the outline of your window onto the white paper, making a thick outer frame. Draw the panes inside the window.

5.Inside the window panes, use the yellow marker to color in each blank space, giving the appearance of light coming through the window.

6.Cut out the window and glue it to the pumpkin.

7.It’s time to make the ghosts! Use the pencil to trace the ghost shapes onto your white paper.

12. Remember that spare ghost? Glue it to the corner of the sign.

13. Now for the final touches! Glue some of the leaves on top of your pumpkin cottage.

14. Add the remaining leaves, rocks, acorns, etc., all around the cottage.

Your haunted pumpkin cottage is complete and ready to be proudly displayed!

By Kristi Johnson Marion f “Necessity is the mother of invention,” then your eight-year-old son desperate for a Christmas nutcracker that’s nowhere to be found is the father of repurposed art. That’s how Julia Wilson discovered her passion for carving and crafting “characters” out of old-wood stair balusters (also called “banisters” and “spindles”) in 1978. After an exhaustive search of Winston-Salem shops for a nutcracker, Julia contacted a friend with a remaining inventory from their former antique shop. There, she found an antique nutcracker in a Black Forest style. Alas, her son Elliott wanted a soldier nutcracker, but Julia took note of the structure and craftsmanship and decided to make one herself. Julia’s husband, Ben, proposed they use parts from a vintage stair banister they were saving for a future home construction. And so began the makings of her family of “banister characters.”

A fascinating woman and a rich storyteller, when asked if she minded if I asked her age, Julia responded that she did indeed mind, and “all that matters is that I’m a child at heart.” When she was a child, her father often worked in construction and would save spare pieces of plaster to take home to Julia for her to sculpt and carve. She has taken woodworking workshops and furnituremaking classes, among other art courses.

Salem for 42 years. During her career, Julia taught at Hanes, Lowrance, Gray School (now UNCSA), and worked at Winston-Salem’s then Journal-Sentinel in the ‘70s in an educational outreach program, instructing teachers in ways to use the newspaper in the classroom.

“I used to play tennis and golf extensively.

Various leg issues ended that, but I can sit and do anything! Carve, draw, paint, write, build furniture and even cook,” she explained. A creative force, Julia works in many other mediums, including painting in acrylic, watercolors, pastel, and sketching in pen and ink; other creative hobbies include quilting, furniture-making, being a master gardener and more.

She fashions her family of banister characters in a folk-art style, often keeping the original paint intact.

Her most recent and detailed work, “Amelia Earhart,” took a year-and-a-half to complete, though she took breaks to build furniture and work on other art projects. Her family of characters, inspired by her world travels, stands tall on her mantle, and also includes: The Queen of Hearts Puritans Old World Santa Claus Saint Francis Baker Scotsmen Bagpipers Chimney sweep Beefeater Royal Guard Mary, Jesus Nun

While Julia does not sell her characters, “They are like family to me. I made a trio of rocking horses and sold one of them and I’ve grieved that horse ever since,” she explained, she does sometimes sell commissioned pieces.

Her banister characters have shown at the State Fair and have won blue ribbons at the Dixie Classic Fair every time they have been entered.

As for her next banister character piece, Julia is waiting for inspiration to strike her again.

wish I had more time, even just one “I hour,” is a statement students often make in moments of frustration, anger, or desperation. Imagine what you could accomplish with a necklace enchanted with an hour-reversal charm called a “time turner”; one counter-clockwise turn would be one hour gained. If only magic were the answer. If a time turner weren’t available, calling out “accio book,” or even “apparating,” into the kitchen for a snack could happen in an instant.

But without fancy spell-checking quills and talking homework planners, students may still discover ample time can be achieved with a great plan. This month, the Harry Potter Guide will offer studying tips and homework advice from our favorite fictitious wizards.

Entering the Fat Lady’s Portrait After a long day of classes, it sounds wonderful that a place like the “Gryffindor common room” exists. With its warm fireplace, and scattering of couches, armchairs and tables, it certainly has a home-like ambiance. This year, find your own common room that banishes technology and provides comfort and great back support. As you plan your evenings, consider time to be the most important factor. Plan to include ten-minute breaks between study sessions. Do not wait until the clock strikes midnight to crawl into your four-poster bed; instead, include time laughing with family, chatting with great friends and quietly adoring your pet owl, rat, or cat.

Benefits of a Homework Planner: While your homework planner may not sing out, “If you’ve dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s, then you may do whatever you please!” recording daily assignments is one necessary tool in becoming a great student. - Keep the planner open while you are in class, so you can record assignments with ease.

- Until it becomes second nature, remind yourself to read over daily class notes, or review returned quizzes and tests! (It’s a great form of pre-studying and will help you retain information.)

- Cross off completed tasks. Why? It just feels good!

- Short and long-term assignments should be transferred to the next day.

Challenging Schedules There is much to learn from Hermione’s work ethic and ability to take great risks as a student. She made a choice to overload her schedule by adding (for fun) a few additional classes. For Hermione, it’s not the status quo, but the chance to expand her horizons and learn even more. Was it easy? No. Through the narrator, readers learn that “Hermione’s immense workload finally seemed to be getting to her. Every night, without fail, Hermione was to be seen in a corner of the common room, several tables spread with books, Arithmancy charts, rune dictionaries, diagrams of Muggles lifting heavy objects, and file upon file of extensive notes; she barely spoke to anybody and snapped when she was interrupted.”

We have all been there. It begins with the word “Yes,” and suddenly you have committed yourself to an impossible work load. Through Hermione, students can “step” beyond their comfort boundaries, learn new subjects and

participate in new extracurricular activities. To eliminate snappish behavior and exhaustion, you should create a workable and breathable schedule. Remember, family and friends have to endure your decisions, and you, too!

As Gryffindor’s Keeper, Ron’s success was connected to his confidence. How often did the exchange occur: “‘I’m sorry,’” Ron mumbled, looking at his feet, ‘For thinking I can play Quidditch. I’m going to resign first thing tomorrow.’” Perhaps if you believe in yourself, the impossible can happen! Apply this credo to your most difficult subject, skill, or new sport, and allow the magic to happen.

While the anthem, “Weasley can save anything. He never leaves a single ring. That’s why Gryffindors all sing: ‘Weasley is our King,’” may not be sung in personalized wording just for you, it’s a great feeling to realize that you can overcome ANY fear, just by trying!

While “Three turns back should do the trick,” you, as a student, do not need a time turner.

Defying time did not work for Hermione, and did not save the day when the hero needed a Happily-Ever-After, either. (After all, Ron did end up in the hospital wing.) With all this scholastic planning, be sure to add time for fun. You certainly want to make time for “mischief managed!”

Operation Christmas Child – A Story of Hope

e often hear about amazing charities that work tirelessly throughout the year to bring joy to those less fortunate. Many of these charities take part in some sort of holiday fundraiser or toy drive to give the children in our area who may have nothing the chance to have something to celebrate. While we know these charities exist, all we usually know is what will happen with the donations, and that they will hopefully bring smiles to those who receive them. We rarely hear real stories of what these gifts really bring to those in need… until now.

“About 17 years ago, we moved to a new church, and this church participated in the Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry,” said Judy Deal. “Although we had never heard of this ministry, my husband and I thought that was such a special way to help a child, and filled shoeboxes for the first time.”

Operation Christmas Child is run by Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. It gained international notoriety when one of its doctors contracted Ebola in West Africa. The concept is simple. Take an empty shoebox; decorate it if you like; choose whether you want to fill a box for a boy or girl in one of three age groups; fill it with gifts; pray for the child; attach a shipping label, which can be purchased from the website, and drop it off during National Collection Week in November. Assistance is available on the website for every step.

“You are encouraged to place a picture, letter, etc. inside the shoeboxes,” said Deal. “We include a Christmas card inside each of our shoeboxes with our name and address. The children I work with at my church, First Methodist Church in Lexington, normally write notes and include pictures of themselves.”

One year, Judy and her husband received something in return…all the way from India where one of their shoeboxes had reached a little girl. “Her father knew enough English that he wrote a letter to us to thank us for the items in the shoebox,” said Deal. “We were shocked to receive a reply, since we had never heard back from any of our other shoeboxes. We just about wore the letter out sharing it with other people. There was not any hesitation to respond. It took me several months to reply to the letter, but only because I was trying to figure out how to further help this family. After not having any luck with my inquiries, I finally just wrote back. We understand that when they received our letter, they were shocked. They said that they didn’t know anyone who would write them and were very surprised that we had written them back. I felt an immediate connection with this family and felt honored that God would want me to do his work. Our connection started out small but has grown through the last nine years, as we have been able to share in the lives of this family. Through correspondence with them, we realized just how blessed we are to be Christians in the U.S., and how many things we take for granted in our lives. Many times through the years, the dad has indicated to us that they feel blessed by us, but we tell them it is just the opposite...that we feel blessed by them.

God has strengthened our Christian walk with Him though this shoebox and the contact with this family.”

What is truly heartwarming about Operation Christmas Child is how it touches an entire family. “Since the little girl was only two-and-a-half years old when she received the shoebox, initially it was the father’s and mother’s lives that were touched,” said Deal. “The family had suffered many hardships that we can not even imagine, and this shoebox provided them hope. He said that everything in the shoebox was exactly what he would have wanted for his daughter.”

Recently, Deal and her husband, whom the now two children call “Grandma” and “Grandpa,” met face to face. “We have corresponded with the family for nine years, and this past spring, we brought the family of four to the U.S. for a visit and to finally meet them in person. The family was here for two-and-a-half months and saw many sites while they were here.”

In addition to this, Judy and her husband have committed to paying for the children to attend a special school in India where they will get a good education. “This little girl’s life will be forever changed by knowing God, knowing that God provided for her even when she was too young to understand, and that God will provide for her in the future by providing many opportunities to her that she (and her family) would never have been able to experience if it had not been for that ‘simple shoebox,’” said Deal.

“Thank you for the opportunity to share our story. It is our hope that in sharing our story, another person will fill a shoebox and be able to show God’s love to another child.”

Sharing the excitement with others, however, might be even more fun. “Gender reveal parties” are the newest baby trend, and couples are getting more and more creative with these themed bashes. Some are even hosting these parties in lieu of traditional showers, so that dadsto-be can also be included. Most of us don’t need an excuse to have a party, but if you’re looking for a fun way to share your exciting news with loved ones, here are some celebratory ideas for revealing the sex of your pending bundle of joy.

● Pick a fun theme like boots or ballet slippers, bows or bow ties, mister or miss, guns or glitter, or team blue vs. team pink and let your guests pick sides. ● Bake a cake with the corresponding color, pink or blue, on the inside and cover fully with frosting, so that guests will be surprised when you cut the cake! If you want to be surprised as well, have your doctor write the baby’s sex down and seal it in an envelope. Deliver the envelope directly to your baker with strict instructions to keep the information a secret. ● Create a scratch-off ticket, so guests can discover the baby’s sex lottery-style. Believe it or not, homemade lottery tickets are pretty easy to make with a little metallic acrylic paint, contact paper, and dishwashing liquid.

You can even provide pink or blue buttons, ribbons, or other trinkets for guests to wear in support of their pick. ● Wrap a creative present, such as a sports jersey or tutu and have the grandparents-tobe, aunts and uncles, or other family members, unwrap. ● Invite your guests to wear jeans and a white T-shirt. As a first-year senior music education major at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, I am very passionate about keeping the arts in our schools. When the topic of budget cuts arises in school board meetings, everyone says that music classes should be the first thing to go. They think that music does not do anything to help students in their academic classes. They’re wrong.

Confucius once said music is “…a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” I would like to challenge you to prove him wrong. Try and go one day without hearing music. You most likely will not succeed. Music is everywhere, and it is the universal language around the world.

I picked up the flute at the beginning of sixth grade. That was about 10 years ago, and I still play. I decided to go into music education because I wanted to be the teacher that everybody loved, and have the ability to positively impact at least one person’s life through music, just like my high school band director (shout out to Jim Kirkpatrick!) did.

Because of music, specifically high school marching band, I came out of my shell. After being bullied in middle school, I never dared speak to people, due to the fear of being made fun of. When I walked into the first marching band rehearsal, I learned that music brings people together. Whether you are a member of band, chorus or orchestra, you are one very-loved member of a gigantic family.

Music has also been proven to keep children who are at-risk stay engaged in school and extracurricular activities. “For me, music is a way to escape from the outside world,” a student quoted on broaderminded.com said. “You can sit down, play away and forget about your worries.” And, it’s true. Most of my colleagues and I find solace in playing our instruments or singing our hearts out. Some even find themselves improvising or writing new compositions.

One band director said that music is “…essential in education to provide [the] opportunity to discover oneself and to learn to feel beyond just ‘doing’ mindlessly.” Another music educator commented on how “…it completely transforms a child’s mind and opens up endless possibilities to [his or her] learning potential.”

According to the National Educational Longitudinal Study in 1988, students who receive some sort of music education have a higher GPA than those who don’t. It should also be noted that music students have higher attendance and graduation rates than those not enrolled in music courses.

A specific example of music positively impacting lives of children is the strings program at Peck Elementary School in Guilford County. The majority of students who attend Peck Elementary receive free and reduced lunch and, therefore, usually cannot afford an instrument. UNCG has partnered with Peck to create a strings program where students and string faculty from UNCG lend students at Peck different stringed instruments and teach them how to play. I once was able to observe a music class at Peck where the students were learning to pluck a certain three-note tune. Having these instruments gave them a sense of purpose and a reason to go to school each day, as they looked forward to going to music class and creating something beautiful.

I’m not trying to convince you to enroll your children in band, chorus or orchestra, though if they want to, please let them. I am hoping to show you the value of music in our schools and how children benefit from it. Who knows? Your child may be the next Kenny G or Aretha Franklin; but without music education, you may never find out.

oda, “junk” food, television, and lack of physical activity. These are common culprits when it comes to childhood obesity. BUT, diet and exercise are not the only factors that may affect your child’s weight.

Parents have a powerful role to play in shaping their children’s health.

The quality of the parent-child relationship can have just as much to do with a kid’s weight as diet and exercise. If parents are concerned about their child’s weight, focusing first on the parent-child relationship will set the stage for success!

Supportive parenting is more than providing for basic necessities and saying “I support you!” It is a way of BEING a parent that can improve your children’s physical and emotional health by strengthening their sense of self-worth and self-esteem. We know being a supportive parent 100% of the time can be challenging, because most children rarely are “perfect little angels” 100% of the time! Even so, taking steps to show your child you are with them on the journey to better health is crucial. Below are a few ways to practice supportive parenting.

Create a supportive home. A child’s home and family environment are among the most important factors that influence lifelong health.

Having a supportive home helps buffer your children from the hardships they may face outside the home. It also provides an environment where they feel safe, secure and accepted.

Banish disrespect. Family members can help create a supportive atmosphere by showing respect and banning negative speech from the home. Allowing disrespect (teasing, name calling, shaming) promotes a toxic and emotionally strained home. Encouraging kindness and respect in the family will help empower your children, especially if they are struggling with their weight or trying to make healthy lifestyle changes.

Show warmth. Being a supportive parent means warmly and affectionately interacting with a child every day. Consistently practicing loving kindness will enhance your child’s trust in you and help reduce problem behavior.

Be sensitive and responsive. It is important that you are sensitive and responsive to your child’s physical and emotional needs. This is true even if some needs may seem trivial. It is particularly important for children who are overweight or obese, as they depend on you to encourage healthy behaviors. You can do this by being available, validating your children’s feelings and providing them with the care needed to adopt healthy behaviors.

Support their autonomy. As children grow older and seek independence, it is important that they feel capable. By showing you care about what is important to your kids, and spending time with them, you support their budding independence and competence.

When you provide structure and guidelines for health behaviors that include your child’s preferences (within reason, of course), your kids will express independence without feeling coercion or pressure.

mid the magical light extravaganza of the Tanglewood Festival of Lights, delightful holiday music, a tempting food truck rodeo and, of course, shopping, there’s a wonderful cause at the heart of the Humane Society of Davie County’s Second Annual Paws in the Park, scheduled for this November 10th.

Dedicated workers and volunteers are already throwing their all into the much-anticipated fundraising event that was a tremendous success last year. While entertaining a crowd of four-legged visitors and their humans alike, their push for animal advocacy will continue with great enthusiasm throughout the Piedmont, as the holiday season nears and the lights begin to twinkle!

As always, proceeds from this year’s event will enable the Humane Society to rescue, care for, and place abandoned dogs and cats into the loving home environments they so deserve.

“It’s an amazing event where we invite the public—with or without a puppy pal—to walk through the Tanglewood Festival of Lights in Clemmons,” explains Carrie DuPre, Marketing Manager for the HSDC. (All dogs on leashes are welcome as long as their vaccinations are upto-date; visit www.pawsinthepark.causevox.com for more details.)

Calling Mocksville home since the early 1990s, the HSDC began with volunteers rescuing and adopting pets from the county animal shelter via a close-knit network of foster homes. Finally opening its own Adoption Center in 2007, the group is small, but driven, with a regular staff of nine employees and a pair of volunteer leadership staff members. However, dedicated volunteers are the real key to reaching their goal of reducing the number of homeless animals in Davie County.

“They are the lifeblood of our organization,” says Carrie. “They help us with animal care, receptionist duties, special events and community outreach.”

With both a youth volunteer program and an adult volunteer program in place, the HSDC is able to involve enthusiastic volunteers to offer invaluable assistance, such as daily pet care; socialization for both dogs and cats, which greatly increases adoptability; cleaning; and walking and adoption fairs hosted frequently by local businesses. For those more comfortable not caring for animals one-on-one, there is always a need for receptionists and folks to help with lawn upkeep and facility maintenance. as well—they have learned firsthand that the power of networking saves more animals’ lives!

Having matched abandoned dogs and cats with families all over North Carolina—not exclusively in Davie County—the group is also focused on widening their reach even more (50% of their adoptions are actually accomplished outside the county).

“We have sent our pets to homes as far away as New York and Arizona,” says Carrie. Residence does not play a factor in their adoption process, but they do insist on a veterinarian check and two non-family personal references. The health and safety of the pets in the Adoption Center always comes first. By sponsoring monthly spay/neuter and rabies clinics, they are also able to foster better education and awareness to prospective pet parents.

Matching new owners with pets makes the challenges worthwhile.

Photographing pets with their new owners is one of the staff’s favorite tasks, as well as receiving photos of adopted animals once they’ve reached their new homes. “The dogs and cats are always more relaxed and have a big smile on their faces—unless they are asleep on the couch!” Carrie says proudly.

There are lots of shining moments: Recently the new adopted owner of the center’s sibling cocker-spaniel-mix puppies brought in a double walker leash, so the siblings could begin taking walks together right away. Those are happy endings made possible by events like Paws in the Park!

To be in any business for over thirty years, you really need to enjoy what you do, and Todd meets this criterion hands down. “I like every level of the building process down to when the homeowner moves in and can’t believe this is their new home.

However, if I had to pick a favorite part of the home building process, it would be the design phase. There is something about taking parameters from the client and the parameters of their lot and designing a home that works for them that gives me a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.”

By A. Keith Tilley or a child, knowing what you want to be when you grow up is probably one of the most challenging decisions you’ll ever have to make. Only a small percentage are fortunate enough to find the answer early on in life. Todd Isenhour was one of them. He knew when he was a small boy that designing and building homes was the direction he wanted to take. Todd recalls, “I have always thought I wanted to build from a very early age. I grew up as the middle child of three boys. We all shared a room when I was young, and being the middle child, I had to take the top bunk, as the oldest got his own bed and the youngest got the lower bunk.

The top bunk was close to the ceiling, so I remember drawing pictures of houses on the ceiling over my bed. I remember my mom getting mad at me. I’m not sure if I got in trouble or not, but that was my first memory of liking to draw houses. I have given up the drywall ceiling as my design table, but I still occasionally use the wall in a home under construction to sketch out a detail.”

His accomplishments go far beyond just his personal satisfaction. Isenhour Homes has earned an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau. In addition, his company has received numerous awards and recognition over the years, including being selected as the Home Builders’ Association Builder of the Year in 1990 and 1992; recognized as the Triad’s top-ten largest homebuilder for the past 5 years in a row; and named to the Triad Business Journal’s Fast 50, “an annual list of the Triad’s 50 fastest-growing privately held companies,” six times, including this year. He was also elected as the youngest president in the history of the Winston-Salem Builders’ Association (according to Bloomberg.com.) His company not only

survived the recent difficult economic times, he adapted and succeeded, increasing his home sales 85% since 2010, and adding jobs to the community by doubling his workforce during this span.

Despite all his achievements in the industry, as a father of four children, Todd understands that one of the keys to success is work/life balance for himself, as well as his team, along with making positive contributions to his community. He’s demonstrated this understanding in various ways, one of which included being named Boy Scouts of America’s Scout Master of the Year in 2008, and he currently serves on the local district Eagle Scout Committee. He’s also been a board member of Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County, showing his dedication to using his skills and talents to help others in need. And he displays to his children the value of honesty and hard work, stating, “I believe there are only two things you can give your children that no one can take away from them; first, a good name and second, an education.”

Perhaps one of the biggest examples he provides for his children and grandchildren, however, is one that he probably doesn’t realize completely himself at the moment—that being his goal to hike the Appalachian Trail (AT) in his lifetime. As an experienced section hiker, he’s already completed his trek from Georgia through Virginia and beyond. In one of his adventures on the AT, he and a couple of his hiking buddies were caught in a surprise snowstorm in early November, 2014, that dumped 22 inches of snow on the trail, making it almost impossible to track. Fortunately, their extensive hiking experience paid off and they were able to navigate the trail and make it out safely.

His will and determination to persevere and reach this goal says a lot about the character of the person; and it’s clear when he puts his mind to it, he accomplishes what he sets out to achieve.

Taking care of his family is very important to Todd, which is why he says, “My parents still live in the same home that we 44 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

moved into when I was 8 months old, and now after 52 years we are building them a new home with all the easy living features for their stage in life.” In addition to his four children, his grandchildren hold a very special place in his heart; so he decided he would build them a treehouse in his backyard to enjoy in their youth and beyond. He had this to say about why he chose this very special project, “Our grandchildren call me Pop, and my wife Klacki, so they always refer going to our house as going to ‘Klacki’s house.’ It’s never ‘going to Pop’s house.’ So now I have a house they refer to as ‘Pop’s Club House,’ which sounds like a lot more fun!”

But there’s another family Todd likes to take care of as well, and that’s his family of homeowners that trust him to build their dream homes. His company constantly strives to find newer and better ways to serve their customers in the best way possible. One very unique feature they use to accomplish this objective is called their Design Studio. Todd describes the process, “As I mentioned before, we enjoy the design process. Offering the design process inhouse is unique to us as a builder. I do not think there are very many builders with a single, dedicated CAD operator on staff. And we have 4 excellent people in our CAD department that can take our rough concept designs and put them in the computer to give the buyer 3-D concepts of their home. This takes the ‘unknown’ out of how their new home will really look.” This process has been a huge success and has proven to be an enormous benefit to his customers. Todd talks about just how much this process helps ease the minds of homeowners wanting to build with Isenhour Homes. “One of our ‘Ah ha’ moments was when we discovered that the process of making all the selections for a home upfront, before the construction stage begins, took away so much of the anxiety that some buyers may have about staying in budget and making selections by deadlines. And it sped up the construction time frame. This is where the design studio concept made sense for us. The design studio is very unique to builders of our product offering. You sometimes see a design studio from a large production builder, but from a builder like us that does a lot of custom work, it is unique and one of just a few builder design studios in the Triad.”

Looking ahead, Todd gives some insight into what types of changes future homeowners can expect to see. “We have noticed over the last 4 years the market has gotten better each year for market growth. Post-recession, we have seen some changes in design that have caused us to redesign a lot of our in-house plans. Buyers only want to build and pay for space that they use. The ‘formal living room,’ for example, has been going away for years.

We see formal dining rooms not being as important as they used to be. But in turn, we are designing larger eating areas; ‘casual dining’ for larger tables, where we used to have a breakfast room. ‘Studies’ are becoming less important, unless the buyer works at home. We think this is because of technology; people can do things on their phone that they used to be able to do only with a desktop computer; and most people would rather sit somewhere else with their smart phone or laptop.”

It’s no secret that when you’re building your dream home you want to have a builder you can trust, and one you feel cares as much about the project as you do. The proper builder can make or break your entire experience. Todd explains, “Building a home is a series of details, and if you’re not good at the details, it can make the process very frustrating for the buyer.” This is one of the many reasons he has so much pride and confidence in his team. “Having a great staff that each have their area of focus, and are good at covering all the details, makes the building process much more enjoyable. This is an exciting time; we think people should have fun when they build.”

his year, the Home Builders’ Association of Winston-Salem (HBAWS) is bringing some exciting new features to the Fall Parade of Homes. For those who have never attended the Parade, there promises to be something for everyone to take away from this year’s event.

“The Parade of Homes is a free tour of homes held annually in the Triad showcasing new construction—single family homes and duplexes, developments and, for the first time in the Fall Parade, a remodeled space,” said Beverly Hayes, director of communications and member services for the HBAWS. “The Fall Parade is a judged event highlighting the best in local home construction at the annual Golden Home Awards, with winners in three categories: silver, gold and platinum. Visitors can see the latest in new home construction, talk face-to-face with builders and their suppliers, and create their own dream book of ideas for future building projects.”

The opportunity to speak with local professionals in the home building industry for free is an invaluable resource for those thinking of making improvements or changes to their own homes. our years ago, when my husband and I bought our current residence, we swore we’d never leave it. But a need to be closer to work and closer to family prevailed, and we found ourselves living among stacks of boxes, bare walls, and taking our entire way of life down to the bare basics.

There’s a reason why moving is ranked among top stressors, which includes life experiences such as death, divorce, illness and job loss.

The laundry list of unknowns can create mental upheaval: How long will it take to find a buyer?

Will we be able to sell our house for our asking price? Will we be able to afford this? What do I do with the pets during a house showing?

Should we hire movers or try to move ourselves? If we do it ourselves, how much pizza and beer will it take to bribe our friends to help?

So, with all that said, and based on my recent experiences, I have some recommendations for anyone preparing to move.

1. Before you talk to a realtor, get an appraisal on your house. There are so many numbers that are applied to a house. Market value. Tax value. Appraisal value. Insurance value. At the end of the day, the number the bank cares about the most is the appraisal value. Getting an appraisal on the front end may save some headaches and tough decisions down the road. You may also have to come to terms with the fact that the investments and improvements you made to your home may not come back to you in the end. This is especially important if you’ve invested in a fixer-upper and taken the time to love the house and make it your own.

Sentimental value of your home and the actual worth may be two very different things.

2. Interview your realtor. You want someone who is experienced, who knows and understands the market. Your realtor should be patient and good at walking you through the process. But for me, it was also important that I liked our realtor as a person.

I needed to feel that they could understand our wants, needs, lifestyle, and since I was going to be interacting with them quite a bit, I wanted it to be someone I liked being around, too.

3. De-personalize and de-clutter before you put the house on the market! This was huge.

We had a yard sale and donated things we didn’t want to take with us. We also used it as an opportunity to begin packing nonessentials before photos were taken. We removed family photos and the personal touches that had made the house ours. We repainted rooms to more neutral colors and did our best to emotionally disconnect from the house before it went on the market. You may even choose to enlist the help of a staging expert to give your house an extra advantage.

4. Accept that showings are hard. No matter how much you try to disengage from your house before you list it, the truth is that when your house is being shown, strangers are going to walk around in it and critique and judge the place you’ve called home.

Remember not to take things personally.

Also remember that patience is a virtue when you’re waiting on a buyer. You may feel that you’re becoming the most virtuous person who ever lived, but it will happen. It just takes time.

5. Moving with kids presents its own challenges. Unless your move is sudden,

you may use this as an opportunity to downsize. But when you’re downsizing a kids’ room, suddenly, toys that haven’t been touched in years become treasured possessions. It may be easier to pack their rooms when they aren’t around, whether they are in school or visiting a friend.

6. Your furry friends are stressed out too!

Moving isn’t just stressful on the adults, but is also hard on pets. In our case, we found a temporary residence for our cats, so that we didn’t have to deal with litter boxes and someone accidentally letting a cat outside while the house was being shown.

7. Be prepared to schedule the move.

Getting quotes from moving companies and truck rentals ahead of time can help make the decision. How far away you’re moving, and how much help you will have, also play key roles in the decision.

After two months of living on processed soup and frozen pizza (in my zeal for packing, I packed all my pots, pans and cooking tools way too early), I have a renewed appreciation for a good home-cooked meal. What I’m looking forward to most (beyond making memories with my husband in our new home), is finding my crock pot that’s buried somewhere in Camp Corrugate.

If you have recently moved, I know you’re undoubtedly relieved to have the experience behind you, because it is extremely stressful. If you’re planning a move, my friends…the final advice I have for you is to just breathe and take one thing at a time. Best of luck!

WHEN REALITY HITS HOME! A Local Family’s Adventure on HGTV’s House Hunters

hile searching for their true dream home, Lewisville residents Katie and Michal Trenerowski got to have a little fun inside the world of reality TV.

W

Relocating isn’t new to these two: In their five years of marriage (at the time of the filming) they had already moved 10 times. Michal is originally from Poland and Katie from Utah and they first came back to the States for the birth of their daughter. Having chosen the Triad for their new home because of Michal’s career, they felt North Carolina was a good spot for their new family life (they now also have a son), and the pair took a chance and applied to appear on HGTV’s enormously popular House Hunters, when the show was scoping out Charlotte-area residents for future episodes. It turns out the WinstonSalem area was close enough to Charlotte to qualify, and after several rounds of auditions they found themselves immersed in an amazing adventure.

Even though they discovered they probably don’t have acting careers in their futures, Katie says they would definitely do it all again. “It will be fun in 20 years to look back at this time in our lives when buying a home seemed like a life-changing decision,” she laughs.

Here’s how the show works: House Hunters doesn’t actually help the couple find a home, but what they showcase is the family’s journey through the home-buying process. Katie and Michal had already partnered with realtor Mia Parker of Keller Williams—who had vivaciously passed her own round of auditions with flying colors. The episode follows the family through the viewing of three homes within 54 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

their budget and style range, where they weigh the pros and cons of each, narrowed with the help of a “wish list” and a “check list.”

For Katie and Michal, the biggest obstacle was blending their vastly different tastes! “In the home-buying process Katie and Michal weren’t on the same page,” laughs realtor Mia. “They weren’t even in the same book!”

When they walked out of the home in Lewisville, and for the first time, didn’t disagree immediately, they took that as a very promising sign!

The rest is House Hunters’ history: Katie and Michal filmed their episode in July/August of 2014, and it first aired in February of 2015.

Through the magic of HGTV re-runs, they are still able to re-live this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Plenty of local residents also took notice, as the family is frequently recognized about town.

“Because of his accent, it’s not unusual for local folks to recognize Michal right away from being on an episode of the show,” says Katie.

People usually comment to her that they are “sure they know her from somewhere!”

Despite the natural stresses of watching yourself on TV, Katie says the family was pleased with their portrayal and had great fun with the show’s crew, who kept them laughing even through numerous takes and re-takes.

“This whole experience was a blast,” says Katie. “We loved it! How many families get to document their first home purchase on national television?”

If you live alone, you’re an empty-nester or you’re totally immersed in raising a family, knowing and trusting your neighbors is not just vital to your peace of mind in an emergency – it’s also a way to forge life-long friendships!

If you’re new to the neighborhood, or you’re just looking to spark a closer relationship with those up and down the street, here are some enjoyable, rewarding and just plain fun ideas for bringing the neighborhood folks together. Include your kids and you’ll instill the sense of community in them also.

• Take a walk. You can’t meet new people from the comfort of your couch.

• Better yet – start a walking group! Post flyers around the street and enjoy seeing who shows up for the first lap.

• Tend to your flower garden or yard – being outdoors brings people together and can’t help but initiate conversation about what’s in bloom.

• Organize a cookie exchange over the holidays. When you engage kids with fun activities, their parents are sure to follow. Invite parents to bring their favorite appetizer recipe and soon you’ll have a festive recipe swap in progress and new friendships in the making!

• Neighborhood book clubs or supper clubs are great ways to meet fellow dwellers who share your hobbies.

• If your new home is situated on a street with more couples or singles, host a casual cocktail party to break the ice – think wine on the patio and a few favorite hors d’oeuvres.

• Nothing brings people out and about like a good old-fashioned yard sale. You’ll likely meet people you didn’t know before and you might find a treasure or two.

• Engage children of all ages in a worthwhile neighborhood endeavor like a food drive or clothing drive to donate to the less fortunate.

Choose one garage or driveway as the drop-off point and recruit parents to shuttle the kids and their collection to a nearby agency.

• If the new neighborhood has an association or a community watch group, join!

• Other “giving back” projects for neighborhood groups? Create a community garden where everyone claims a grassy plot to grow their own vegetables, plus enough to donate, too, or have children and teens loan themselves out to elderly neighbors for home chores like raking leaves, shoveling snow or carrying groceries.

• Trying to rally some neighborhood spirit? Organize a block party, complete with hot dogs and games for the kids and grills going full steam for the adults. Note: Do check your local regulations for barricading private streets, safety concerns, etc.

• Lots of really connected neighborhoods rely on cooperative babysitting services – doing wonders for young couples who need a date night and offering teenagers a great money-making outlet close to home. If your cul-de-sac is more adult-oriented, the same goes for pet-sitting!

oving is stressful and most people look forward to it the way they look forward to a root canal. But it doesn’t have to be terrible! If you can hire a professional to pack and move, it’s a worthwhile investment just from the standpoint of the time you will save. However, if you are moving yourself, or hiring a mover to only move the boxes you’ve already packed, consider these helpful tips!

1 Save money on bubble wrap by putting those tshirts and sweaters to work! Use your clothes to help wrap up fragile items and other breakables.

Use clean socks as a great way to stuff your glasses before wrapping.

2 Use a consistent labeling system – mark boxes based not only on content, but also on which room the items will go in. Consider color-coded tape for your boxes for super easy reference.

3 Before you begin to unload boxes and furniture into your new place, go ahead and clean the bathrooms, kitchen, and floors. Once you get that heavy dresser in place, you won’t want to move it again any time soon!

4 Avoid spillage from bottles of oils, lotions, and other liquids by covering the tops with cellophane and then replacing the caps.

5 What’s the point of emptying the contents of a drawer into a box? Using a roll of Press’n Seal will turn your drawers and their contents into their own little boxes.

6 If you need to disassemble anything prior to moving – like furniture or an electronic system – save yourself a ton of frustration by taking a picture of the set-up before you take it apart, and use labeled sandwich bags to keep small parts together for reassembly.

7 Put all those decorative baskets and bins to use as moving boxes!

8 Use garbage bags to keep your hanging clothes clean and on the hanger, and to make unpacking much easier! Just poke a hole in the bottom of the bag for the group of hangers to go through.

Parents Shaming THEIR CHILDREN on Social Media

arents shaming their kids on social media, good idea or bad idea? Here are some of this year’s highlights: • A Baltimore mother slaps her son after seeing him throw rocks at a police officer on TV.

• After learning her 13-year-old daughter has been posing as a 19-year-old on Facebook, a mother posts a FB video of her daughter telling the truth.

• Or this jewel: A father posts a video of himself as he shoots his daughter’s laptop after she posted an obscenityriddled rant about doing chores.

• On a tragic note, another father uploaded his humiliation video to Youtube. In it he was cutting off his daughter’s very long hair while scolding her for “getting messed up.” It went viral. Three days later this beautiful 13-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping off a highway overpass. Heartbreaking.

• In March another seriously egregious parent, Timothy Robenhorst, took social media humiliation to an all-new level. In the photo, he is next to his son, Kayden, who holds a handwritten poster stating he was a bully and lists his harsh punishments. In 24 hours, his post was shared by 57.3 million people around the world.

Let that sink in.

Included in Mr. Robenhorst’s post was his son’s first and last name, a photo, the name, the location of the school he attends, and the date and time he would be there for his public apology in a school assembly forum. Making his boy an easy target.

Too much—too far. Thanks to his “bullying,’” now countless crazies have all the information they need to attack this child. How many lives 64 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

What are the long-term implications for their relationship? His son’s selfesteem? His son’s future employment? How is he doing now?

Regardless of the offense, punishing a child with social media humiliation is NEVER acceptable. Without exception. Humiliating yourself? Oh, that happens all the time. You are grown; by all means take a silly selfie. But this is different.

Behavior-related conflicts happen. Have a code that everyone understands and be consistent. We adhere to these rules in our house: • We will all be respectful even in our arguments (time, place, word choice).

• You, and only you, are responsible for your good judgment; you will be held accountable.

• (When needed) punishments will fit the crime; abuse it and you’ll lose it.

As parents, we need to constantly ask ourselves, “What am I teaching?”

We model what we want to see in our child, because you can bet we will see it later. This begins the day they are born and ends the day we die.

That’s the deal we signed up for; it’s in the fine print.

he feet of a four-, five-, and sevenyear-old pounded up the wooden staircase in anticipation of arriving at the playroom. My daughter has been to this room before. In the last two years, Thomas the Tank engines and tracks have been replaced with Star Wars posters and toys, a table full of LEGOs, a costume rack and accessories for boys and girls, and much more. Daegan and Casey both wanted to be Star Wars Jedi’s, while Sayre wanted to wear the costume of a princess superhero.

Without complication or conflict, the three friends agreed to their roles (two chose to be “good guys”), and then they began playing.

Each had a sword in hand and was ready to solve the problems of a galaxy far, far away.

Teamwork and Problem-Solving For today’s children, pretend play is necessary in developing a number of important social skills. With two and especially three children involved, they are able to practice sharing responsibilities and taking turns, creating dialogue and acting quickly when a problem in the story arises. As parents, we do want our children to experience those “What comes next?” moments in play.

And, most importantly, to work together to solve problems as friends and playmates without relying on adults for guidance.

Fostering Imaginative Play The season when children are considering who they want to be for one night is around the corner. How exciting it is to dress up as a book or movie character for everyone in the neighborhood to see. Trick-ortreating is not usually about originality, rather the chance to become the most popular heroes who save the day, such as Queen Elsa, Spiderman, or Ironman, for instance. Although expensive, great costumes are available in stores and on-line; however, the best costumes are ones that can be used for multiple purposes. Beyond one night of trick-or-treating, a simple mask, cape, sword, and loose-fitted, all-black, -brown, or -white tunic could encourage a child to portray any number of fascinating characters. While the day after Halloween is the time to find discounts ranging from 50 to 75 percent, there are also great alternatives to spending money.

Homemade Accessories How many times have you said, “Why do I keep buying tiaras or swords, when they break so easily?” The answer becomes, “Why not get the kids together and create your own?”

Beautiful headdresses can be made quite simply. Cut off the bottom of a paper bag and roll the edge of the bag outward. Use a low-heat glue gun to connect the crown and then attach artificial flowers. Ribbon can be wound around for a nice decoration and also to ensure the headdress remains in place.

Pipe cleaners can look glamorous if made into a tiara. Whether with loops or pointed, the design is up to the wearer. Add a few plastic jewels to make her an honorary princess.

In making a durable, but safe, sword, parents will have to do much of the work. By cutting a pool noodle into the requested length and inserting a bamboo rod through the center, a child could wrap the sword and cardboard handle with duct tape (several layers will be needed).

For young Star Wars fans, create light sabers with a pool noodle. For the handle, wrap five inches on one end with duct tape, and use black tape for the two buttons and stripes.

In addition, there are wonderful, simple patterns if you have the time and ability to sew. Imagine all the wonderful tunics and capes, headdresses and masks you can create for both boys and girls in an array of colors. In considering safety and a one-size-fits-all costume, Velcro would be a great alternative to tying a ribbon at the neck.

Transitions Around the age of seven, imaginative play is replaced with reading, structured activities and games with rules. Although it is a sad time to think of your child as moving beyond the power of make-believe, children will find alternative outlets through building and crafting with LEGOs, magnets, or LEGO magnets, acting or dancing, writing, or playing on a computer. But in the first seven years of life, at least, we can help our children aspire to dream, pretend, and solve problems through imaginative play.

Behavior Problems?

It Could be What They’re Eating By Stacy Leighton

His mother stood transfixed, eyes like saucers. Her normally placid 4-year-old had been transformed into a whirling dervish! Who WAS this child? Aside from the blue Cookie Monster cupcake frosting that lathered his face, his behavior rendered him equally unrecognizable. We watched as he ran in circles around the playground. “Have you ever seen this before?” She asked me as she contemplated a rodeo-style calf roping. “Yup, let’s sit down. He’s safe, it will wear off and tonight he’ll sleep like a baby.”

As if there weren’t already too many land mines in this thing we call “parenting,” here’s one more, and it’s a biggie—Foods affect moods.

What we eat, how it is processed and metabolized is as individual as children themselves. We know that food allergies can cause rashes, respiratory or sinus irritation and even anaphylaxis, but allergies and food intolerances can also cause anxiety, irritability, hyperactivity, and, conversely, lethargy and even digestive distress (gas, nausea etc.).

Some parents have implemented the Feingold Diet (elimination diet) to determine the food culprit, while others watched and kept a journal.

Here are some of the most common culprits: Yeast – An overabundance of yeast in the system can cause digestive problems, as well as fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, irritability and skin problems. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 Americans has too much.

Possible causes or triggers: antibiotics (should be taken when prescribed, but with probiotics, like yogurt), refined breads and sugars.

Here’s the nasty bit—yeast needs sugar and can cause sugar cravings, a vicious cycle. Suggestions include avoiding refined sugars, choosing whole wheat instead of white bread, limiting foods with yeast and following sugar suggestions below.

Sugar – Sugar is a quick-burning fuel. In addition to hyperactivity, too much sugar can spike and crash behavior, and bring about depression, cognitive delay and sleep problems. Naturally, sugar and artificial sweeteners (found in most processed foods) should be avoided when possible. But what about that birthday party? No one wants their child to feel singled out or left out. By eating higher-protein foods (slower to metabolize) prior to the cupcake, we can slow down the insulin absorption reaction.

Dairy – Many children who are intolerant or allergic to milk proteins become irritable, cranky, or aggressive, and often suffer frequent colds and ear infections. Colicky babies become inconsolable babies and,

later, irritable toddlers and older children. Try organic soy, almond or coconut milk. Lactose-free milk can have additives, too, so you may want to avoid it.

Artificial Food Colors – The United States is one of the only countries that has not yet banned food dyes in foods and medicines for children.

Sort of makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Red 40, Yellow 5 and Blue 6 have been proven to cause behavioral changes, anxiety, hyperactivity and headaches in children. It’s sneaky, too. Yellow 5 presents as pink.

Food dyes can be found in children’s medicines, yogurts and even breads. Read labels and also look for organic yogurts and dye-free (sometimes diabetic) medicines. If you are a baker, there are sites online where you can find natural food dyes for your frostings, etc. For example, beet juice is used for red or pink and a pinch of turmeric makes a lovely yellow.

Preservatives – What child doesn’t love bologna, salami, or hot dogs?!

Nitrates, nitrites and MSG (monosodium glutamate) have been found in these and can cause mood and behavior changes, including headaches and hyperactivity. Watch your juices, too; some contain sodium benzoate, which has the same effect. Look for alternatives that are organic and kosher.

Of course, our children’s behavior could have an environmental, developmental, or organic origin. Kids are going to be kids (thank goodness!

Sure wish I could be a kid again), but if their behavior has no obvious origins, this list should help eliminate some variables. Happy parenting!

Empowering Students through Peer Tutoring By Lisa S.T. Doss skill. Students need to convey material in small steps, and adapt when information is misunderstood. Cross-age tutoring occurs with two or three students paired with one tutor. While this method is challenging to schedule, the partnership between older and younger students is beneficial to both.

Reciprocal Peer Tutoring Mathematics has always been an independently learned subject. Students listen to lessons, take notes, and practice through paper-and-pencil problem-solving.

How often do students have the chance to ask questions, affirm understanding, or complete nightly homework without worry?

Reciprocal Peer Tutoring is one of the most widely used formats to help students boost confidence.

ommunication is the key to success! How many times as adults have we heard that particular credo? Today, the presentations we knew as students have been modified to suit what is required in the outside world. As a result, students are learning how to lead, communicate information and offer encouragement through peer tutoring. You may be wondering why children are teaching one another? Long ago, you were chosen for the task of line leader. Do you remember how you felt? Important, yes! And, responsible for everyone standing in your line. In presenting the steps of a math problem to the class, you learned how to speak publically, and, possibly, the experience increased your confidence level. Students who engage in peer tutoring activities also feel connected to leadership, and value team-based relationships. While no activity is 100 percent effective, peer tutoring is a learning strategy being used in our schools nowadays.

Cross-Age Tutoring Albert Einstein said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” For older elementary, or middle or high school students, teaching younger children in small groups becomes a 70 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

In addition to math, RPT can be applied to reading or social studies lessons. Every student has the opportunity to act in the role of tutor. RPT involves placing low- and high-performing students together in either pairs or trios. Students are able to teach, monitor, evaluate and encourage each other. Each time students engage in peer tutoring, they learn to work together and overcome any problems that may arise. In addition, students are recognizing mistakes and helping peers improve as learners.

A teacher often has little time to provide constructive criticism or help a group in need. Her role is to circulate throughout the room, briefly visiting groups and recording student progress. Just as when taking a quiz, written feedback coupled with a class discussion is scheduled for the next day.

All of us can remember sitting with a classmate in an elementary classroom and taking turns reading out loud. Personally, I still can recall the book Lyle, Lyle Crocodile by Bernard Waber. Today’s children have increased responsibility as students. They are learning to listen to their peers, recognize mistakes, offer or discuss corrections and take turns becoming the tutor. Peer tutoring is helping children in elementary, middle and high school learn important lessons about reading, social studies and math that inspire confidence, aid communication skills, promote understanding of difficult concepts and, best of all, accustom students to tutoring or learning from a peer.

ighheeled shoes can cause pain, deformities and damage to the feet that can last a lifetime. But doctors say there are steps women can take to reduce high-heeled-related foot problems 1. Avoid shoes with pointed toes.

2.Avoid heels taller than two inches.

3.Recognize that foot pain is a warning sign.

High-heeled shoes crowd the toes, force the body’s weight onto the ball of the foot and disrupt the body’s alignment. They can lead to a laundry list of problems for women and their feet:

Bunions High heels do not cause bunions. Most women who develop bunions can blame their ancestors for passing down a faulty foot structure. But over time, wearing pointed-toe high heels can make bunions worse. Only surgery can correct this often painful deformity.

Hammer Toes High-heeled shoes that crowd the toes together can contribute to hammer toes. This deformity occurs when the second, third, fourth or fifth toes become bent, like a claw. This can cause constant shoe friction, leading to painful corns.

Severe hammer toes may require surgery to relieve pain Corns Corns usually form from repeated pressure on the skin. Women with foot deformities, such as hammer toes, often suffer from corns, because the tops of the bent toes rub against the tops and sides of the shoes.

Haglund’s Deformity, or “Pump Bump” Pump-style shoes often cause significant pain by irritating a bony deformity some women have on the back of their heel, called a “pump bump.” This problem is common in young women who wear high heels almost every day.

In many cases it can lead to blisters, bursitis or Achilles tendonitis.

Neuromas Pointed-toe and high-heeled shoes are the most common reasons women develop painful neuromas. High-heeled shoes can cause the toes to be forced into the toe box, which can compress and swell small nerves in the foot, especially between the third and fourth toes.

Neuroma symptoms appear gradually and include tingling, burning, numbness, or pain.

Without treatment, a neuroma can lead to permanent nerve damage, making it difficult to walk without severe, shooting pain.

Ankle Tendonitis High heels increase the risk for ankle tendon inflammation. Tendonitis occurs when the ankle and surrounding tendons are unstable or overused, due the lack of heel stability in higher-heeled shoes. This can lead to ankle swelling and joint pain. Left untreated, tendonitis can lead to chronic inflammation and tendon damage.

Back Pain High heels force women to stand and walk unnaturally, affecting the alignment of the ankles, knees, hips and lower back.

Foot and ankle surgeons say the majority of their patients are women. But not all foot problems related to wearing high heels require surgery. Thankfully, many of these conditions can be treated non-surgically with changes in shoe gear, padding, with orthotics (shoe

inserts), anti-inflammatory medications and other non-surgical methods.

Women’s high-heeled shoes are not going out of style anytime soon. But by recognizing pain as a warning sign, wearing high heels in moderation and seeking medical attention when problems are in their early stages, women can stay fabulous on their feet.

Most days, it’s a deluxe sandwich that Garnet has clearly put a lot of care into making. On the slice that gets mayonnaise, she carefully spreads it smoothly all the way to the edges, so that every bite includes mayonnaise. Without looking, I know that the same can be said of mustard on the other slice of bread. If there are pickle slices, they have been carefully laid out so that every bite has pickle.

We go through half-and-half at a crisp clip. Seeing us pour half-andhalf into our coffee one day, my sister Lisa commented that she didn’t know you were allowed to use that much in a cup. Absolutely, we said. She has since joined the club.

Unless I have to eat at my desk to get everything done, I take my lunch into the break room, where I eat while reading a book. One of the women I often see eating her lunch in the break room once commented that my wife must really love me to make me such a nice sandwich every day.

Whenever a family member leaves, Doobins will say good-bye before the person walks out the door. After the person leaves, he will count to five, open the door and call “good-bye” one more time as the person heads toward the car. It’s a good feeling to have him call after you as you head out into the world.

“Yep,” I said and took another bite.

I make a point to thank Garnet before leaving each morning, and, from time to time, I will send her an email after lunch to let her know that she has made a particularly noteworthy creation. You know how it is, though, when something becomes part of the fabric of your life, it’s easy to forget just how big a gift it is.

Every so often, something will remind me. It might be, on a really busy day, watching others hustle by on their way to hopping in their

A Conversation with Local Artist

Rose Idol

ometimes, the talents of a young person prove to be so extraordinary that it’s hard to believe that so much can be attained in such a few short years. Such is the case for 16-year-old Rose Idol. With her keen eye for detail and insightful ability to read emotions in the people around her, Rose is a shining example of why we should never underestimate the abilities of our youth. We wanted to learn more about Rose’s passion for art and how, as an exceptionally gifted artist, she plans to use it in the future.

DH: How long have you been drawing?

RI: I’ve been drawing since before I can even remember.

DH: Do you prefer sketching or painting?

RI: DEFINITELY sketching. I have only painted two pieces, but I’ve sketched for MANY years. I am more comfortable with sketching, but I try to be diverse with different styles and mediums. Whether it’s

pencil or pen, or even markers—but I also like charcoal.

or happy, but more of a really deep feeling that may be too complicated to express.

DH: How do you find your inspiration?

DH: What do you plan to do with your art in the future?

RI: It’s more of a spur-of-the-moment thing. A friend might inspire me with one of their drawings, or I might see something on the Internet.

But honestly, the kind of music I listen to really affects what the drawing will look like. I also play piano, so sometimes, when I play, it puts me in the right frame of emotions to release them into the drawing. I also base some drawings on personal experiences or emotions I’ve felt, whether good or bad, or just somewhere in between.

DH: What is your favorite thing to draw/paint?

RI: I’m really into characters or figures, but I also like abstract things. I really love to put images into my drawings that reflect emotions that are not necessarily mentioned in everyday life. I’ve drawn things that are more dark, that could represent anger or sadness or confusion or whatever that particular drawing described, and I’ve drawn things that are more uplifting and very happy.

RI: I really want to be a video game character designer. I love video games of all different genres and I really enjoy designing characters. It’s one of the reasons I want my style to be so diverse, because I could work with all different genres of video games and fit the characters to the genre.

DH: Who are your favorite artists?

RI: I really don’t have a favorite. Even musicians, and I feel that music is so influential in my art. I really like indie and rock music, and some electronic and pop as well. So, my art may be influenced some by that, but no other visual artists really inspire me. I simply enjoy what they give.

DH: What have I not asked that you’d like to share?

RI: I like to look at a situation from several different perspectives and then bring that out in my art, so that maybe someone else can be moved by it, too. It encourages other people and myself to look at life in a new way.

Okay, I need to be the church, I get that. But, what does that even look like? Well, Andy finishes the series by giving us a question to ask ourselves. This question has the potential to shape every word we speak, every interaction we have and every relationship we’re involved in. It’s a question that forces us to take personally Jesus’ command to love God and love one another.

The question is this, “What does love require of me?”

He also shared how hard it is for pastors to have real friendships with people, and the difficulties of being fully

I’m exhausted and my brain is on overload. I desire to worship and focus my attention on God, just like everyone else.”

This openness and transparency is healthy and refreshing. It’s so important for the people who are leading and serving in our local churches to recognize their human-ness and to share their needs. It’s not easy for anyone, especially people in leadership roles, to be open about their vulnerability. It’s risky to admit you need help.

It’s easy to ask, but not so easy to respond.

When that co-worker steps on my toes again, what does love require of me?

When that Facebook friend posts something that ticks me off, what does love require of me?

When a certain family member is pushing my buttons, what does love require of me?

As church members, we can and should encourage this kind of openness. We need to give our pastors and ministry leaders permission to be imperfect. We must create a culture where grace and forgiveness are offered much more readily than criticism and negativity. When our pastors do express a need or a struggle, we need to respond quickly and lovingly. And, most importantly, we

need to regularly pray for our pastors and their families.

I have challenged myself to write this question on my heart, and so far it has not been easy. But, I know this is how God wants me (and you!) to live. He has commanded us to run everything through a “love filter.” Knowing we would struggle, He even gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us along.

t happened. The earliest it’s ever been, although it seems I say that every year.

calendars double-booked, and yet for many of us, our homes and lives are already packed. Is there ever enough?

I walked into the grocery store a few weeks ago and I saw the holiday candy: my very favorite, candy corn! My heart cheered! Typically, when it comes to sugar, I’m a chocolate girl, but candy corn is my one exception. Shelves of Halloween candy are our culture’s universal sign marking the beginning of the Holiday season. Every year, it seems to come earlier than the previous year.

There is an underlying pressure and anxiety to have enough, do enough, go enough, bake enough, give enough, decorate enough, celebrate enough, travel enough, and see enough. How much is enough? How much is too much? Can we even tell anymore?

While my heart secretly thrilled at the thought of goodies yet to be and sugar-rushes to come, something else in my heart fell. Soon, all the stores will be stocked with candy…and “homemade” pies, decorations, toys and the newest gadgets with the newest technologies.

Candy is just the beginning; soon the stores will be loaded with wish-list items for everyone on your naughty-and-nice list.

My heart fell because, despite the excitement, there seems to be something a bit broken about the way we go about celebrating from October to January. The stores remain stocked, the parking lots remain packed, our credit cards stay maxed, our stomachs remain stuffed, our

This month, and in the coming months, as we pack our already-overflowing and overbooked lives with more, in hopes to prepare our hearts to celebrate the incarnation of God with us and the birth of Jesus Christ, I pray that with each candy purchase from an irritatingly long shopping line, in each crowded, road-rageridden parking lot, and with each repetitive, sighing swipe of the debit/credit card, you will pause to remember God’s children around the world.

The incarnation of the Word of life in Jesus Christ was a history-making, earth-shaking and life-changing, reconciling of the entire world into one family. “For from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.” (John 1:16a, ESV) As the Holiday Season commences, may we have the courage to celebrate what God has done in Christ through the Holy Spirit, by extending that grace generously to others.

y daughter never experienced death until her brother died at the age of two. We had no alternative but to openly share our emotions, feelings and stories of her little brother, Finn. For the first two months, my four-year-old daughter could convey aspects of what I also wanted very simply and clearly.

“Mommy, I want another brother. Can we bring a baby home? I want to talk to Jesus and tell him to give Finn back. Let’s go and get him.” As an adult, I was struggling to find understanding; however, my child understood the simple nature of death in ways that made me realize that I cannot shield her from hurt or pain; instead, she is facing death with questions, and a knowledge that those who die go to heaven. Through this horrific loss, she is teaching me great lessons, and most importantly, how much we love each other.

Talk and Listen Our counselor through Hospice said it well. “If a child can love, she can grieve.” Day or night, Sayre’s emotions range from great excitement and open conversation to triggers which may cause instantaneous screams and cries or feelings of overwhelming anxiety. She worries about her brother and desires to be where he is, safe and surrounded by great numbers of family in heaven. It’s rare, but I wait for those moments when she will share a memory or say something important. I want to know what she thinks, and how she feels. And, when she does, we listen and respond to ease her heart and mind.

Offerings to Her Brother My daughter has always loved to draw pictures. She abandoned her treasure maps and rainbows for pictures of the four of us linked together and always holding stick-like hands. Her wording is always present tense, as she explains, “This is our family.” Yes! A smaller version of her and her brother is taped to his bedroom door. This was her offering, a reminder that she is eternally linked to him.

These moments are terribly hard for Sayre, too.

I am thankful to four-year-old Casey, who said, “I know she misses her little brother, but she still has me and Daegan.” And a BFF named Maddy, who also has a brother in heaven.

Together, they are bonded through friendship, guardian angels and Pixie dust.

Balloon Release On the first-month anniversary of Finn’s death, our family wrote letters carried by balloon to Finn in heaven. The moment of release brought instantaneous sobbing. I realized this was the moment she understood.

An Introduction Five weeks after her brother’s death, her Grandaunt Theresa passed. While I was terrified of the moment, it was very natural for her to want to meet the woman who lay in the casket. Holding my hand, I introduced her.

My daughter put her hands together and said a prayer. She then kissed her hand, reached out to touch Theresa’s arm, and said, “Mommy, she’s an angel.” Yes. In these moments when I worried too much, my daughter took me by the hand and showed me what to do.

Balloons now represent a connection between her and her brother. They must have a note inside; otherwise, he will feel great disappointment to have the toy, but not her words. While she has trouble finding the right words through prayer, she can talk to him in wavy-line scribbles. Yes, that has meaning.

Even today, she will create those wavy lines on her drawing paper while saying, “Dear Finn. I really want to see you today. I miss you. I love you so much. I hope you live happily ever after.”

The Love of Friends I am constantly amazed by how many children under the age of eight instinctively understand how to show sympathy and compassion towards a grieving child. Greeting each other

I thought Kevin and I had to be strong for her.

But she is showing us it is okay to be sad, to talk about her “Finney,” and that he is still with us. Children are strong, smart, and instinctively knowing! We continue to work through our grief as a family through conversation and prayer. With great confidence she can say, “Daddy loves me. Mommy loves me, and Finn really loves me whole bunches.”

By Stacy Leighton can’t imagine life without music. Music is magical; it has the power to soothe a broken heart or make us dance like no one is watching. The right song can lift us out of a funk or take us back in time. But it is so much more; it could be the key to unlocking other mysteries in the brain.

I

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Dyslexia (in all its forms) and Sensory Integration Dysfunction all have one thing in common—they happen due to a disruption in the brain. Specifically, a hemispheric imbalance. The idea is that when the right or left side is weaker, strengthening therapies greatly improve learning disabilities. Multimodal, non-invasive therapies, like music, help re-wire the brain. And music is fun!

Seriously though, this is some really exciting stuff. Whether people play an instrument or participate in music, the results are amazing.

Let’s begin with a study by James Hudziak, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont and Director of the Vermont Center for Children, Youth and Families. He studied the brain development of 232 children between the ages of 6 and 18 who played a musical instrument. “What we found was the more a child trained on an instrument, the more it accelerated cortical organization in attention skills, anxiety management and emotional control.” Anxiety, depression, attention problems and aggression also correspond with changes to cortical thickness.

Playing music altered the behavior-regulating areas of the brain, or the “executive functioning, including working memory, attentional control, as well as organization and planning for the future,” wrote the studies’ authors.

So what IS cortical thickness? This is the connective tissue in the brain through which the right and left brain communicate. A thicker membrane has more neural highways, allowing for greater hemispheric transference, or better communication. Because learning disabilities are thought to be compounded by hemispheric imbalance, under-functioning neurologic pathways impede each half from communicating properly with the other, causing the brain to become desynchronized.

The brain processes all sensory input: sight, smell, touch, taste, balance, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, speech, facial recognition and emotional responses. We all receive information in the same way, but for many of our children with learning disabilities, the messages are miscommunicated. Music helps by converting sounds to actions; by connecting the auditory and motor sections of the brain, which in turn increases the understanding of verbal commands.

For example, a pianist navigates 88 keys using two hands simultaneously, playing up to 10 notes at a time. Therefore, pianists have to develop a totally unique brain capacity. When we discovered our daughter had Dyslexia, our pediatrician recommended the piano. I can testify this worked wonders for her! True of any instrument, this actually strengthens the weaker hemisphere. When both sides are equally strong, speech, spatial awareness, coordination and attention span can greatly improve. Academically, it helps children develop spatiotemporal faculties, improves their ability to solve complex math, comprehend time and space, helps reading comprehension and verbal abilities. This is especially true for children with ADHD (who can comprehend more in less time) and

Dyslexia (because they can digest information as phrases rather than in pieces).

Music promotes wellness by managing stress, enhancing memory and improving communication. A 2004 study from the Journal of Music Therapy found that “music in interventions used with children and teens with ASD can improve social behaviors, increase focus and attention, increase communication attempts, and improve body awareness and coordination.” It also reduces anxiety, often present in ASD and Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Classical or rhythmic music has a predicable beat. When played regularly as a routine or ritual, it is a very effective transition tool.

So, what if your child doesn’t play an instrument? Sing like no one is listening!

Singing in groups is especially therapeutic, creating social and emotional connections that have a physical manifestation. Musicologist Bjorn Vickhoff, of the Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden, monitored choral singers’ heart rates.

He discovered in no time that their heart rates were synchronized. “The members of the choir are synchronizing externally with the melody and the rhythm, and now we see it has an internal counterpart,” Vickhoff says. “It’s a beautiful way to feel. You are not alone, but with others who feel the same way,” according to Vickhoff. Children with learning disabilities often feel disconnected from peers or, as in many cases with ASD, have difficulty connecting,” Vickhoff notes. “Wasn’t that a good idea to get the class to think, ‘We are one, and we are going to work together today.’”

f “How was your day?” or “I haaaaaaate vegetables!” is getting old at your table, spice it up with more fun and games. Try the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” game!

How to Play: The first person choses a character, real or fictional, from literature, movies, television, or even your household. The first person begins by giving verbal clues about their identity. Those guessing are allowed to ask only “yes” or “no” answer questions. If your children are small, you might tell them if their guesses are “hot,” “getting warmer,” or “cold.” The first to guess correctly gets the next turn.

It was described to me like this: “My Mom was serving meatloaf (which we hate). Just as we started to complain she said, ‘It’s a wonder I could even prepare this meal with all the snakes on my head. Actually, National Cat Day has been around for a while—since 2005. Its original intent was to recognize the number of cats needing to be rescued annually. It has evolved to embrace and celebrate the love and companionship that cats bring to our world. Is there any picture more relaxing than a cat lounging on a perch in the sun, stretching out to find the best place to bask and watch the world go by? Don’t we all wish we could have a couple of those moments?

Cats have their own claim to fame in the media. Some of the more well-known include: Duchess: The elegant, sophisticated star of The Aristocats, created in 1970. Her adventures with her kittens and O’Malley the Alley Cat are a Disney favorite.

Who can forget Garfield? Created by Jim Davis in 1978, Garfield has been eating his way through lasagna and being generally annoyed by everyone and everything for years.

He’s been in thousands of newspapers and has his own movie credits.

Sylvester, the Cat in the Hat, Tom & Jerry are animated celebrities that we remember from our childhoods and share with our children and grandchildren.

Socks became famous as the Clinton’s cat in the White House. He was, however, not the first cat to reside there. Abraham Lincoln brought his son’s cat, Tabby, with them.

Morris may be the most famous cat spokesman of them all. His story fits perfectly with the focus on rescuing cats. Bob Martwick, a professional animal trainer, rescued

Morris from a Chicago animal shelter.

Morris served as the spokesman for Purina’s 9 Lives brand beginning in 1969. He was also an honorary director of Star-Kist Foods and held veto power over any cat food flavor that he didn’t like.

Remember the cat in Breakfast at Tiffany’s? That was Orangey, an orange and black tabby, who had a pivotal role in that legendary film.

There are huge numbers of cat videos on the Internet, from Grumpy Cat to the little surprised kitten.

As much as cats have enjoyed their day in the spotlight, they’ve also had some dark days with unusual beliefs thrown their way.

• The legend that black cats are bad luck still exists today.

• In bygone years, fisherman’s wives believed that having a black cat meant their husbands would always return from the sea.

• In ancient Egypt, cats were revered, and anyone who killed a cat was punished by death. When a cat died, the entire family would shave their eyebrows as a sign or mourning.

Many famous people through the years have considered cats as part of their family.

• Sir Winston Churchill took his cat, Jock, to many war meetings. He was known to wait to begin meals until Jock took his place at the table.

• Mark Twain summed it up well. “If a man could be crossed with a cat, it would improve the man but deteriorate the cat.”

I’d say he was definitely a cat lover.

• Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat flap door so that his cats could come and go as they pleased, something all cats enjoy to this day.

Cats are estimated to number 60 million in the US as house pets. Approximately 37% of US households have a cat. Their purrs soothe us, and their demand for attention take us away from the stress of a busy day.

As I write this, Henry is hiding under the sofa until somebody comes in with a brush, which he loves; Phoebe is residing on the sofa, just watching; Vivien is stalking around looking for something that irritates her; and Gable is at the top of the cat tower with his tail and one leg hanging off, as the king of his domain. This is dedicated to them and to Bear, Barney, and Herbert, who have already traveled the Rainbow Bridge.

Ann Justice:

A Woman of Courage & Strength

otivation in the fitness world comes in all forms. Some individuals are motivated by seeing numbers drop on the scale, while others are motivated by seeing numbers increase in the amount of miles they run or the amount of weight they lift. I’ve known people who are motivated by their own emotional growth, and still others who are motivated based on their dedication to a healthier lifestyle and personal discipline.

As you can see, motivation is personal. What motivates one individual may do little for another. However, one thing that I’ve observed that motivates nearly everyone is a genuine success story from a real-life person. An individual just like them…struggling through the challenges of life, pain of loss and daily pitfalls. With that being said, meet my friend Ann. She has courageously agreed to share her story with all of you with the hopes that you, too, will find the courage to dig deep and begin a wellness journey of your own.

I met my client and wonderful friend, Ann Justice, for the first time in April 2014.

Perhaps you can relate to where Ann was during this particular season of her life. The previous fifteen months had been some of the most difficult that she’d ever encountered.

Personal pain and loss had defined this time and her body and her heart were feeling the crushing weight of those burdens. She knew that life had brought her to a crossroads and she had a choice to make. Move on in strength, or stay stuck and struggling. Ann describes her decision to call C3 Fitness for a consultation in this way: “I knew that something in my life was missing. Something had to be done. Overwhelmed with my life’s circumstances, I had let myself go. It was time to focus on me.”

From the moment of our first meeting, I knew that Ann was a special lady. At the age of 56, she sat in front of me ready to make changes that women half her age don’t possess the courage to make. Something told me that not only would Ann claim victory with her spoken goals, but that her life would never be the same again. We talked about what Ann wanted to accomplish during her time with me at C3. Her physical goals were ones that we can all relate to: get stronger, more fit, develop core strength, improve flexibility and begin a personal running discipline. The beautiful

stronger and more confident. Her initial fitness goals have been met, but she keeps pushing for more. Complacency is not an option in Ann’s world. As a pediatric nurse, working twelve-hour shifts, Ann values her own wellness, so that she can give her very best to the little lives that she touches every day. She finds value and joy in her tight circle of friends who have journeyed through this season of growth alongside of her. It has been an incredible privilege to walk with this amazing woman as she has conquered unique challenges and come out even stronger for having experienced them. Can you relate to Ann? Do you see a bit of yourself in her story?

Perhaps you feel beat up and tossed around by life. Maybe you’ve lost yourself in the process. Allow Ann to motivate you to transform your present and your future as well.

It’s not always easy, and it’s not always fun… but just like Ann, you can do it. One step at a time.

Working with Ann over the past sixteen months has been an incredibly motivating experience for me as a trainer. She has walked the walk and talked the talk. Ann is faithful to her workouts. The woman never gives up. She’s a fighter in all areas of her life and I’ve seen a very real transformation happen before my very eyes. Over the course of our time together, Ann has lost (and kept off!) 25 lbs. This didn’t happen overnight and I can assure you that there were no weight loss gimmicks. Every bit of her success has come from old-fashioned hard work and sacrifice. Ann has learned how to make healthier choices every day. Easy improvements, such as eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and packing a salad with lean protein for her lunch, have kept her on track.

Today, Ann is a different woman than I met back in April of 2014. She stands taller, is

EmErgEncy Kits — Zombie Kit —

mergency kits might inspire fear at the first mention of their name, but they aren’t necessarily tied to instances of disaster. Thanks to handy sites like Pinterest and Etsy, there’s inspiration for ways to create kits for both real emergencies, or for those little emergencies that life throws at us daily. This column will explore ideas of items that could be essential for various types of emergency kits, so that you can be inspired and start your own. This month we’re going to have fun with an emergency kit that will have you prepared for the zombie apocalypse. With the success of shows like The Walking Dead, this kit is sure to be a fun Halloween party favor or gift for that zombie lover in your life.

Scrapes and bumps are going to happen when you’re fleeing a horde of zombies, so you have to make sure you’re stocked up on bandages. Watch out for the bites though, no amount of bandages can repair those! You can easily find great zombie Band-aids in most stores now, especially during October.

Your most important zombie kit item is obviously going to be your weapon. Whatever your weapon of choice may be, make sure it’s reliable and that your ammo can go a long way. Nerf makes several zombie toy weapons these days, and you can always pick up inexpensive toy weapons or water guns at your local dollar stores.

You’ll want to get creative.

Depending on how thrifty you are, you can use anything from an old shoebox to an Army supply-tin container.

Make sure to get in the spirit and add some wear-and-tear-look to it by painting or aging the container. Add the Halloween fun by splattering it with some red paint or fake blood and wrapping it in caution tape, or slapping on some great zombie stickers that are on the market now.

You may need to save battery life in your flashlight and not be able to risk giving away your location by burning a campfire, so some glow sticks will come in handy.

They’re long-lasting, give off a lot of light and, of course, they’re fun.

Every zombie apocalypse survivor needs a flashlight or headlamp. When you pack up your kit, you can fill the light with the batteries needed, or you can stock it with candy for a fun party favor or gift for a kid.

Being on the run from brain-hungry zombies day in and day out can be exhausting. You’re definitely going to need to stock up with high-energy snacks and foods to keep your endurance up to stay 10 steps ahead. Depending on your preference, you can stock your kit with your recipients’ favorite candies, or you can go healthier with trail mix and dried fruit. It’s easy to find free printables to wrap your snacks in, if you really want to add to your kit.

The zombie apocalypse is going to get boring from time to time, so you will need something to occupy your down time. Why not pick up some useful reading material now, before it flies off the shelf? The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks is a go-to source for the most essential survival information.

arenting is hard. Kids don’t come with how-to manuals. And when it comes to parenting our kids, one size does not fit all. All clichés. And all-too true. Each month, “Parenting Perspectives” will explore various parenting topics from the perspective of two parents who are at different stages in their parenting career.

(By Lisa S.T. Doss) When some children reach about the age of five, the words, “I don’t know how,” become part of everyday language. My daughter, who would ask me to leave the room to dress herself, suddenly had no idea where the bathroom was located or how to find her commitment to being self-sufficient.

What happened? If I could interpret her mindset, her job was “finished,” now that she has achieved a level of proficiency in dressing herself and using a hamper, attending to bathroom needs and good hygiene, and could contribute to basic household tasks.

For a few weeks, she continued this line of, “I don't know how,” and followed up with, “You do it, Mommy!”

In this stage of regression, it would have been so simple to help her; but, I had a bargaining chip. If she wanted to go outside, she needed to wear shoes, and, suddenly, I forgot how to help her.

Needless to say, when she was committed to helping me in the garden or having a delicious snack, her memory returned. Praise and attention worked wonders! Ah ha, the moment passed and we were back on track! Voila!

This lesson in being a committed member of our household was just the first step of many. In looking to the future, I wonder, how often will she change the language and her commitment to keeping promises and completing challenging tasks? As parents, we are her biggest fans, and will provide praise for her persistence to maintain those commitments. There is the other side, too. At the age of five, our daughter understands we are just as determined and will not let her give up, throw in the towel, or walk out easily! Commitments are responsibilities. She'll learn great lessons along the way, especially when too many promises can make the day to day difficult.

(By Denise Heidel) Commitment at 17 takes on a different level of meaning.

Commitment to sleeping late? Got it mastered! Commitment to hours of gaming? Bring it on! Teenagers have the reputation for being self-focused and commitments sometimes don’t seem like a priority. The cool thing about this age is that while their commitments to the things that are important to them may leave some parents scratching their heads, they are beginning to show signs of adult-esque commitment as well. For instance, when my son was caught emptying the dishwasher, because he’d made the commitment to help out more around the house, was a true moment of beauty. Okay, I exaggerate.

When he spent two weeks as a Counselor-in-Training, I was very pleased by his commitment to the job. He took it seriously and committed to following the rules, being a part of the process, and assuming tasks he’d never done before. He got a healthy dose of reality when he had to live and work with people he didn’t feel were pulling their own weight. The experience emphasized the importance of following through when you’ve made a commitment and other people are depending on it.

Commitment can mean a number of things. Promises. Obligations.

Duty. Some things are easy to commit to. Charlie is learning that.

His commitment to his girlfriend is easy for him to make, because he loves her and enjoys spending time with her. His commitment to doing things he doesn’t like to do…well, he’s learning that that’s life.

As we find ourselves getting closer and closer to that number 18, the age at which the law says my son will be an adult, I have to hope that the work ethic and integrity I’ve tried to teach him will become the foundation for his future commitments. I believe it will.

I

f you’re new to the elementary scene, it can be just as exciting and daunting for parents as it can be for kids. These six years fly by fast, and it seems every year presents new experiences, challenges and rewards for both parents and students, alike. I recently jotted down a few of my “live and learns” to share with other parents embarking on the elementary adventure for the first time.

1. Get Involved with PTA If you have the time, this is one of my biggest tips. Not only will it help you meet parents, teachers and administration, but it will help you learn a ton about what goes on behindthe-scenes at your school. Also try and do something big—at least once—during your career as an elementary PTA mom. Take an officer role, chair a committee, head up a special event, or start something new.

Politically speaking, it never hurts to make a name for yourself and show your commitment to the school.

2. Ta ke LOTS of Pictures of Your Child in the Cla ssroom and on Campus Every year I did the obligatory photo of my kids on the first day of school—wearing backpacks—standing on our front porch, headed off to their new grades. I rarely took candid pictures of them in their classroom, interacting with their friends and teachers, or at special events on campus. This became agonizingly apparent when I was asked to find a favorite photo of my daughter at school to be featured in the fifth grade slide show!

3. Get Your Child Involved from the Sta rt Just because your child is in Kindergarten or first grade, doesn’t mean she can’t be involved in school activities. The more your child does 94 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

early on, the more they’ll want to be involved later. Sign them up for at least one grade-level club or group. Consider getting them school attire. Make a point to attend schoolsponsored events as much as possible.

4. Promote Orga nization from Day One Start early by holding your child responsible for keeping up with his planner/agenda and homework. Have them write down their homework every single day at school, and check when they get home to be sure they did this. Then have them cross off items as they complete them. It’s almost too late to start this habit in middle school, and it’s so important to have this simple task under their belt!

5. Get to Know the Moms in Your Child’s Gra de Just as in preschool, your lifeline to other moms is never overrated. You’ll probably get to know best those moms whose child is BFF with your child, but take the opportunity to meet other moms as well. We always tell our kids to broaden their horizon with friend circles, and parents should do the same.

6. Buy a Yea rbook for Your Child – Every Yea r I regret that I did not buy one for my daughter each year for her first three years. The kids get so excited to see the finished product, find their pictures, search for snapshots of friends and exchange autographs. It also makes for a wonderful keepsake, and something for your child to cherish years from now.

7. Let Them Leave Their Ma rk If there is a chance for them to add something, sign something, hand or footprint something, make it a priority to do so before the six years are up. At our school, they sell ceiling tiles for kids to paint, decorate and sign. The ceiling

tiles then became part of the school fixture permanently. It’s a great way for your child to leave his mark, and if they go back to visit a younger sibling, it’s also fun to find their “mark.”

8. Try to Attend at Lea st One Field Trip If you’re able to take the time to attend at least one trip with your child in the six years of elementary school, you will never regret it.

The older your child gets, the greater the chances they won’t want you to tag along. So take advantage of this the first few years, if possible. Not only will you cherish the opportunity to see your child enjoy himself among his peers, but he will also remember “that trip” that you took with him! Better yet… try and attend one trip each year.

9. Let Go a Little Bit It can be a gradual thing, but elementary years are the best time to give your child independence. When you feel the time is right, let them walk to their classroom alone.

Give them the experience of buying their own lunch (if your school provides). Let them stay after school for an activity. Have them go home with a friend. Put them on the bus. Don’t be the first parent to pick them up after at school. Make them do their own homework and projects. Let them succeed, but also let them fail. Most importantly, let them be their own little person.

n Thursday, September 10th, 250 guests gathered at Smith Reynolds Airport for a unique evening to launch the upcoming exhibit, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Winston-Salem’s Wheels of Change,” which will be on display at the New Winston Museum starting September 19th, 2015.

The Honorary Co-Chairs for the event were Sandy and Allan Gitter, and the lead sponsor was Piedmont Aviation Historical Society, along with many other generous sponsors.

Guests mingled and perused the silent auction that consisted of many exciting items, such as an aerial tour of the Piedmont in a bi-plane, a Great Gatsby party, a NC Coast sailing trip and many more, all made possible by donations from local businesses and individuals. All of the proceeds from the evening support the Museum’s mission of preserving, promoting and presenting the dynamic history and diverse stories of the Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community through education and collaboration.

all is a time to celebrate the vibrant harvests of many vegetables and fruits.

Specifically, all varieties of pumpkin, squash and apples abound during autumn months. So grab the kids and head to a local orchard, pumpkin patch, or local farmers’ market to get some of the key ingredients for these dishes. Then enjoy creating, cooking and celebrating the bounty of this beautiful season!

Butternut Squash Apple Bake 1 butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about 2 pounds) 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into rings (tart varieties are best, but kids may prefer something else) ⅓ cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 Tablespoons butter, melted Directions: 1.Spray a 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan with non-stick cooking spray and arrange squash in the bottom. Top with apple rings. Combine the brown sugar, flour and cinnamon; sprinkle over apples.

Drizzle with butter.

2.Cover and bake at 350° for 40–50 minutes or until squash and apples are tender.

Yummy Pumpkin Bars with Cream Cheese Frosting 2 cups Original Bisquick™ or Trader Joe’s Multigrain Backing mix 2 cups granulated sugar ½ cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 eggs, beaten 1 can (15-oz.) pumpkin ½ cup raisins or cranberries ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional) Cream Cheese Frosting 1 package (3-oz.) cream cheese, softened ⅓ cup butter or margarine, softened 1 Tablespoon milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups powdered sugar Directions: 1.Pre-heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom and sides of 15 x 10 x 1-inch pan with shortening or cooking spray.

2.In large bowl, beat all bar ingredients except raisins with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl frequently. Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in raisins or cranberries and/or nuts. Pour into pan.

3. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely, about 2 hours.

4.In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, butter, milk and vanilla with electric mixer on low speed until smooth. Gradually beat in powdered sugar on low speed until smooth. Spread over bars.

For bars, cut into 8 rows by 6 rows. Store covered in refrigerator..

And he definitely wouldn’t have become involved with a mysterious quest that could bring down an entire pancake franchise.
