or Treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat! I’m showing my age, for sure! Most young kids have probably never even heard this silly little rhyme, but it still brings a smile to my face to recall it. Halloween has certainly changed since my carefree childhood days, but we have more options than ever before to celebrate this quirky little holiday. Be sure to look for the many Halloween-funrelated activities and events throughout this issue.

October is a great month for many reasons beyond the fun of Halloween. Most prevalent for any Forsyth County native is our beloved Dixie Classic Fair. I enjoy the fair for different reasons now…but I still have to go each year. For the last several years, my husband and I go on the Lowe’s Food night, when you can get free gate admission by donating at least five Lowe’s brands food items to benefit Crisis Control Ministry. Just so happens on that same night is the WBFJ Christian music concert! It’s a free event once inside the gate and something we always look forward to.

We have enjoyed hearing some wonderful big-name artists over the years. It’s a great family activity, and we sure will miss having our girls with us again this year! It’s a very uplifting event, so go check it out and let me know what you think!

By Meghan E.W. Corbett may seem early for some, but Christmas is right around the corner! There is no use in denying it, and if you are like millions, you have not even started shopping for friends and loved ones. If you are like some, you have finished shopping, the gifts are wrapped and you are the envy of the neighborhood. No matter which group you fit into, there is still plenty to do before December 25th, especially if you want the spirit of Christmas to be alive in everyone this year!

“I grew up LOVING Christmas,” said Nathan Tabor, businessman and founder of ChristmasToyDrive.com in WinstonSalem.

“Opening presents was fun, but celebrating the birth of Jesus and giving presents was amazing! Well, this love has just gotten larger over the years! When I bought my first home in 2000, I immediately went to Lowes Hardware and purchased thousands of lights to put on my home. Now, it has grown to 95,000 lights dancing to music, with thousands of people coming to see them every year in Kernersville.”

Over the years, Tabor has shared the Christmas spirit with others through lights, sleigh bells and presents, but knew he had

to do more.

“I have been involved with Brenner’s Children’s Hospital’s Festival of Trees for 13 years,” said Tabor. “In 2005, my wife and I welcomed our daughter Abigail into the world. I knew immediately I wanted to pass on my love for Christmas.

So, the first year, we gathered a few toys and shipped them to an orphanage in the Ukraine. The next year, we gathered a few more and so on. By year six, we had gathered more than 1,000 toys and gave half to Brenner’s and half to local churches. That year, I realized I needed structure—the ability to organize, collect more toys and be more diligent in how they were given out.

However, I didn’t want to set up a 501c3, hire staff and start an organization. I wanted to be a facilitator. I wanted to raise funds and buy toys! There was a natural fit— the Salvation Army. It was all a perfect fit from there. The Salvation Army agreed to be my partner and the name ChristmasToyDrive.com was available. Really? ChristmasToyDrive.com was available? It was fate. It was truly a God thing! This partnership gives ChristmasToyDrive.com credibility and a trusted distribution channel.”

The Salvation Army is one of the most well-known charitable organizations in the world. Every year, the people behind the name bring countless gifts to the less

fortunate around the world. We all know the red buckets and ringing bells that spring up around this time of year, but there is so much more to this group, and Tabor knew they would have the tools to spread his idea throughout the area.

Unfortunately, more and more families are in need. That means we need to raise more funds and toys. “The Salvation Army does wonderful things for families and donors,” said Tabor. “By giving through the Salvation Army, all contributions are 100 percent tax deductible."

Christmas can seem like a stressful time. Getting everything done in time and making sure everyone is happy can be a daunting task, but we often forget about those who have bigger stresses in their lives. So, instead of worrying about every member of your family having the perfect gift, do a little something for yourself and learn how great it can feel by giving complete strangers a Christmas to remember. “The joy of giving is an amazing feeling,” said Tabor. “We are a community, and our community is in need. The challenge is simple. As a community, we have a responsibility to step forward and help those in need. Your church, your family, your business, or simply you alone can make a difference. Remember, the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Also, as of August 31st, ChristmasBibleDrive.com has been launched, and we are planning on putting a Bible in every family’s box. We are looking for churches to partner with us.”

Love and Support Make Challenger Dreams Come True

our community is fortunate to share in many special events, occasionally an event will come along that exhibits the extraordinary level of generosity our residents, local volunteers and businesses all have to offer. For Southwest Forsyth Little League (SWFLL), that opportunity came in the form of an invitation for its Challenger team to play an exhibition game in the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in August of this year. The exhibition was against the Rhode Island District 2 program, in advance of the International and United States championship games. It took place inside the famous Little League Volunteer Stadium and was aired on ESPN3 and UNCTV. The SWFLL Challenger division was established locally in 2006, as a separate division of Little League that enables boys and girls with developmental and physical challenges to enjoy the game of baseball.

When we reached a level just shy of the halfway point of our financial goal of $30,000, I received some unexpected good news. A call from both the CFO and President of Toshiba Business Solutions to tell me that they were making up the difference, to make sure that our families would not have to have any out-ofpocket expenses for our trip.

In addition, our Challenger team was honored at the last home game of the regular season for the Winston-Salem Dash, which was an extra special treat for everyone.

It was an honor to share in this experience, and I would also like to recognize all the people that were part of the hundreds of volunteer hours it took to make this 1 hour of glory happen for someone else. For example, the Manring family, Serena and her son, Coach Tyler, who have been wonderful additions to our league, as well as all the volunteers, coaches, players, parents and board members at SWFLL. What did it mean to you to be able to experience this moment with the Challenger team?

In order to cover the costs of the trip, it would require the assistance and kind donations of many members of our local community to make it happen. And that is exactly what took place. I spoke with Chuck DeLuca, Director of the Southwest Forsyth Challenger Division, about what it took to put this together, and what it meant to everyone involved to see it turn out so successfully.

As a 20+ year coach from T-ball to high school baseball, my goal as a coach has always been to go as far as your team or program can go. The reality is that this opportunity will most likely never come our way again, and that every moment will be forever cherished by not only myself, but my entire family.

First, tell us something, if you will, about those that helped make this trip possible.

What was this experience like for the Challenger players?

We were very fortunate to have help from many different sources, including the Village of Clemmons, the Winston-Salem Dash, PMG

Sometimes it was the smiles on the faces that said it all, and sometimes it was the tears. Not only by the players, but the parents and family members,

as well. It wasn’t until I was listening to a parent conduct an interview for a film series that will be featured at the Little League Museum, that I truly understood the impact of our program on the players and their families. It wasn’t the World Series that meant so much to them. It was the program itself, and the inclusion of their children into such a program that accepts them for who they are, and the friendships that develop with other kids within our league. This day was their day to shine, and shine they did. They not only proudly represented Clemmons and North Carolina, but Challenger League players and kids with special needs everywhere.

Can you tell us about the buddies for the Challenger players that traveled with the team, as well?

Our buddies consisted of seven players from the 10th-anniversary Little League World Series team from the boys’ Major division, along with eight additional volunteers from within our league.

I have to say all the buddies were phenomenal.

It was really a pleasure to be back on the field with many of the boys that played in Williamsport 10 years ago. It was equally special to have both of my sons, Michael and Robert, as buddies working with the team. Players that made the trip from the 2002 team included: Alex Robertson, Michael DeLuca, Chad Gentry, David Morgan, Chris Sanders, Sammy Lucas and Robb Scott.

What message would you like to send to supporters of the Challenger division?

So many times when I have personally thanked our volunteers, their response is simply, “Coach, it was nothing.” I can honestly say, what to them may be “Nothing,” for those for whom they do it, it can be “Everything.”

Forsyth County Assistant District Attorney Taking the Next Step in Community Service

By Carolyn S. Peterson decision to run for Forsyth County District Court Judge was met with much forethought for Forsyth County ADA, David Sipprell. “As an attorney and specifically as a prosecutor, I had thought on occasion, ‘What kind of judge would I be?’, but I didn’t give it serious thought until Judge Chester Davis announced his retirement in the Spring of 2010. It was then that my colleagues and peers, who know the type of person I am and have seen me in the courtroom, encouraged me to seek election and I began discussing the idea with my wife and family. In August, 2010, I began my campaign,” recalled Sipprell. This step to become Forsyth County District Court Judge was the next in many which have led this son, husband, dad and community activist to where he is today.

Life is about Making a Difference for Others After growing up in the Clemmons, NC, area since the age of 6, David Sipprell has always had a sense of the importance of others and reaching out to help those in the community. “As a kid, I was involved in local sports teams, the Boy Scouts, and service clubs during high school.

I understood that each of us could impact our area in some way, and I was interested in doing what I could do to make a difference,” David said.

Following law school, David Sipprell had a diverse career in law, including working for local law firms; being commissioned as an active-duty JAG officer in the US Air Force; and then returning to his hometown of Clemmons, NC, with wife Kyla, to start a family and become an Assistant District Attorney in February of 2002. Throughout his career, Sipprell has seen many things he would rather not have, but it’s those disturbing cases that drive him to continue to push forward and help where he can. “I am active in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, as well as several other civic organizations, and I know what groups like that and others can do to change a young person’s life. If I can help direct the path of someone away from seeing me as a prosecutor in court one day, that is important to me. Kids need to know there are other choices, and they can be a good student and successful. If I am elected to serve as judge, I will rule fairly, taking everything into consideration, and apply the law to the best of my ability, to make our community a safer place,” commented Sipprell.

Lots of couples come for the ride and pumpkins, and we have a Wake Forest Sorority that comes every year that always has a great time!” said Tanglewood Farm staff Leslie Bergman. “October is our favorite time of year around here. We enjoy seeing the excitement and everyone having such a good time.”

Wagons seat up to 25–30 guests. The ride is $8 per person, and includes your choice of a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. Reservations are strongly recommended. Pony rides will also be offered to hay ride participants age 6 and under on Sunday, October 28th, from 1–4 p.m.

Fall is Family Time at Old Salem Museums & Gardens day during autumn is the perfect time for families to pack the kids in the car for a drive to view the colorful trees and snap a few pictures for the family photo album. Make a day of it at Old Salem Museums & Gardens! The whole family will enjoy the bountiful colors, flavors and sounds of the season. “Autumn in Old Salem,” including the following special events, runs now through November 11.

Harvest Day Mark your calendars for full day of fun during Harvest Day on Saturday, October 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. As part of the festivities, Old Salem will celebrate two classic German food favorites: pork and apples. Harvest Day will be filled with historic demonstrations and hands-on activities for the whole family including making and (of course) tasting apple fritters, candy apple tasting, apple cider mill demonstrations, learning to dry apples, discovering Old Salem's orchard, making sausage and learning hearth cooking with apples and pork.

Harvest Day activities are included with an All-In-One ticket, which are $21 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-16.

Celebrate Halloween Are you afraid of the dark? Come find out on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 between 6-9 p.m. by joining a Legends and Lanterns walking tour at Old Salem. During this 45-60 minute tour, a costumed guide will light the way by lantern through Salem’s nighttime streets. You will visit several haunting stops in the historic district and hear tales of a local ghostly legend, or interact with a person from the past. You might even catch a glimpse of a ghost or two while visiting our historic buildings!

Show off your pumpkin carving creativity and imagination at this outdoor contest on Saturday, October 27 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., on the grass lawn between Winkler Bakery and the Boys’ School on South Main Street. Free pumpkins will be provided; please bring your own carving tools. All children must be supervised by a parent, guardian or other adult. The carved pumpkins will be lighted and displayed on the Salem Square fence on Sunday, October 28, during a district-wide trick or treating event for the public from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

For the third year, Old Salem Museums & Gardens will host its popular trick-or-treating event on Sunday, October 28. This free event will take place on South Main Street, from Salem Square to the Frank L. Horton Museum Center. The hours are 6-8:30 p.m. Trick-ortreaters should be accompanied by a parent, guardian or other adult and wear light-colored costumes and clothing for safety. South Main Street will be closed to traffic during the event.

Heirloom Puppet Theater Old Salem is presenting a series of puppet shows at the Heirloom Puppet Theater at the Frank L. Horton Museum Center this fall.

Heirloom Puppet Theater shows feature historical based puppet performances intended for all ages. Fall puppet shows include “Farmer Kater and the Apple Tree” on October 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 20 24, 26 and “The Great Turkey Trot” on November 3, 7, 9, 14, 16, 28, 30 and Scout Day on November 3. Puppet shows are included in All-in-One tickets or cost $2.00 per person without an All-in-One Ticket.

Science Alive!

Throughout the 2012-2013 school year, Old Salem will present an educational program for school groups and home schooled children in grades K-5 titled “Science Alive in Old Salem” aimed at bringing science and history to life for young people. Some of the hands-on activities participants will experience include: discovering the design difference between a musket and a rifle; telling time by using the sun; identifying the changes in producing lye from ashes in soap making, finding out how to make a fire without using matches and using simple machines to weigh, measure and lift.

Dates for fall 2012 include September 26 and October 10, 24, 31. The cost is $9 per student, $18 for adults and reservations can be made by calling 1-800-441-5305.

FREE Gardening Workshops Gardening workshops are a great way to spend time with the kids (or get away from them!). All events are free and last approximately one hour.

BREAST MRI

By Helena Summers, MD, Staff Radiologist, Triad Radiology Associates lifetime risk of a woman developing breast cancer is 10-12%.

Nearly all women are affected by this cancer, either personally or through a loved one.

The good news: breast cancer has become a treatable, and often curable, disease due to early and more thorough detection of breast cancer and better treatment strategies. Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers a unique way of detecting breast cancer and sometimes finds cancers that mammography (x-rays) and ultrasound (sound waves) can miss. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio frequency pulses to create a picture of the breast based on the innate properties of breast tissue. It also utilizes a contrast “dye” that shows the blood flow within the breast; in general, breast cancers and precancers collect more of the dye than healthy breast tissue, allowing us to detect them.

Thus, MRI, unlike mammography and ultrasound, allows breast imagers to see not only the morphology (anatomy) of the breast but also the physiology (real time function) of the breast and tumors.

When should breast MRI be performed?

1. Presurgical planning – Women with a new diagnosis of breast cancer have a 4% chance of having another simultaneous cancer in the opposite breast that is invisible on mammogram. Additionally, women with a new cancer can sometimes have a larger tumor or

more tumors in the same breast that were not originally detected. Breast MRI can also show diseased lymph nodes in places not imaged by mammography or ultrasound. By having an MRI before surgery, additional disease can often be treated with a single surgery 2. High risk screening – Women with a 20-25% or greater lifetime risk of developing breast cancer are considered “high risk.” This includes women with a strong family history of cancer, those with gene mutations (BRCA1/2 are the most well known), those with a history of chest radiation between ages of 10-30 (often for childhood lymphoma), and some women with a history of biopsies showing atypical cells.

Because MRI is very sensitive for identifying breast cancer, high risk women can benefit from regular breast MRI screening.

3. Problem solving – Women with suspected breast implant rupture, lumps, or pain not explained by mammography or ultrasound can benefit from breast MRI. What can a patient expect?

A dedicated breast MRI machine will have a table with holes in it; a woman lies face down on the table and her breasts hang down into the holes. The table then moves her into a doughnut shaped machine (the magnet). She will hear a series of clicks and humming; she will have earplugs and a communication buzzer in her hand in case she wants to talk to the technologist (who will sit in an adjacent room with a window). After a few series of images, contrast dye will be run into an IV in her arm – this might feel cool in the arm and often makes her feel a little flushed (which is normal). The entire scan usually takes about 45 minutes.

Who should not have an MRI? Very rarely, a woman can have an adverse reaction to the dye administered. Women that are claustrophic can be uncomfortable in an MRI scanner; anxiolytic medication can help.

Women with some pacemakers, metal in their eyes, and some ear surgeries should not have an MRI. Women with kidney failure or pregnant should not be given contrast dye.

Who should perform and read my MRI? An experienced radiologist should interpret the MRI and perform a biopsy, if needed. The MRI machine and center should be accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) or Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Magnetic Resonance Laboratories (ICAMRL), dedicated to breast imaging, and able to perform MRI-guided biopsies, in case a biopsy is warranted.

it comes to your imaging needs, whether diagnostic or preventative, there are three simple words that make all the difference…Remarkable Patient Care. Every day the staff of Novant Health’s network of area outpatient imaging centers strives to provide the community with imaging services to improve their health. Included in the network of imaging centers are four Forsyth Medical Center Imaging facilities, Maplewood, Kernersville, The Breast Clinic and Winston-Salem Health Care Radiology, along with Piedmont Imaging. To achieve this goal of delivering Remarkable Patient Care, the imaging centers in this network have implemented a new approach to patient care called “Welcome to the Family.” “The idea behind the concept of ‘Welcome to the Family’ takes several things into consideration. We realize that patients usually don’t feel good when they come here. They’ve been told that they need a certain scan, screening, or test, so if there are ways we can improve their experience while they are with us, that is our goal,” said Michael Reece, Regional VP of the imaging centers. Although this may sound like a simple idea, “helping patients have less apprehension and stress,” it has been put into place with much thought and effort on the behalf of the staff at all five imaging centers.

A History of Compassion The imaging centers have a strong commitment to excellent patient care through serving the Triad’s and surrounding areas’ health care needs with stateof-the-art imaging technology. “Since 2008, Novant Health has been the sole owner of these five centers. The mission of Novant Health is to ‘Improve the health of our communities one patient at a time.’ This isn’t accomplished completely by patients just coming in, getting their scans and waiting for their physician to call with their report.

Our mission statement is carried out by our remarkable staff at each center. Doing our job for our patients goes beyond meeting their imaging needs; we want to provide an environment where they are comfortable and confident in the services they receive. The focus on compassion is embraced by our great partners in providing these services, Triad Radiology Associates [TRA]. TRA interprets all of our images and 28 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

provides results to the referring physician within 24 hours. Triad Radiology Associates has been doing what they do best with compassion and a genuine interest in patient care for over 40 years,” commented Reece.

Dedicated Team, A Personal Touch “Welcome to the Family” has been launched at Forsyth Medical Center Imaging Maplewood (FMCI Maplewood), the flagship of the imaging centers within the network, performing approximately 150 exams each day. “We strive to create a remarkable patient experience each time a patient walks through our doors. We want our patients to feel as though they are genuinely a part of our family; that they are safe in our care; can get all of their questions answered, and can receive quality services that are not only easy to access, but also affordable. The patient experience begins and ends with our compassionate staff,” stated Michelle James, Center Manager for both FMCI Maplewood and Kernersville.

To incorporate the “Welcome to the Family” feel into the five imaging centers a more family-friendly atmosphere was needed. “At FMCI Maplewood, we have a greeter, Susanne Boles, who welcomes and directs each patient that enters our facility. We no longer have patients standing in line waiting to be helped.

We have also made changes in our lobby area to overcome the clinicalmedical feel between patients and our reception staff. In addition to offering free Wi-Fi, we now have an area for patients to have coffee, as well as what we call our ‘pediatric area,’ which is a sitting area dedicated to our younger patients. We have children’s literature, as well as offer coloring books and crayons while they are here,” said James.

Beyond the initial impression for patients in the lobby and reception area, FMCI Maplewood has taken a proactive approach to patient care with its “Welcome to the Family” focus via the distribution of literature, educating patients about preventive or screening imaging exams.

“Our patients are at FMCI Maplewood because their physician has referred them and ordered a test. In an effort to look at a patient’s health proactively, we discuss the importance of preventative exams, such as mammograms and bone density studies, instructing them to talk with their physicians if they would like to look further into tests to aid in the preventative maintenance of their health. We believe that patients should know of the latest technologies that can be used, like a CT lung or cardiac screening exam, which require a physician referral, detecting health issues in early stages,” commented Katie Wilburn, Regional Marketing Manager for the centers.

FMCI Maplewood recognizes that with changing health care and insurance plans, patients aren’t often sure of what their out-of-pocket expenses may be for a test. “In the past, the best that we could offer patients was an estimate of what an imaging exam may cost them. Now with our financial navigator program, a patient’s insurance information is taken, along with the exam ordered, and within 24 hours, the patient can know exactly what they will have to pay,” said Whit Hall, the centers’ Area Marketing Manager. Preventive imaging exams, such as CT lung or cardiac screening studies, have preset costs, $299 and $149 respectively, so again, the patient knows his/her out-of-pocket expense right up front.

Staying Flexible and Focused in Patient Care FMCI Maplewood and the four other centers in the imaging network offer MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine Studies, X-Ray, Bone Density, Screening Mammography, Mobile Screening Mammography, Diagnostic Mammography, Breast MRI, Breast Biopsy, Stereotactic and other special breast procedures. “With all of our imagining centers, including Forsyth Medical Center, there is a continuity of care, with the same radiologists at Triad Radiology Associates reading and interpreting the results.

Should a patient require a screening quickly, in most cases we can accommodate them and their situation within the network of five centers,” said Hall.

Chinese silver grass and Mullen. These species are all rapid growers in disturbed areas, and the Linville Gorge’s high propensity for wild fire has made it especially susceptible to invasion. These species are threatening the Gorge’s ecosystems by crowding out native species; but hopefully, we will be able to control these problem plants and keep them from spreading by enlisting the help of the community.

Volunteers are needed to manually remove these pesky plants. Due to the rocky terrain, it is hard to get any machinery into the trails; it is also not allowed by the Wilderness Act. It is also very difficult to use any types of herbicides without special considerations and detailed environmental review.

In other words, hand- pulling is the only “tool in the toolbox” for Wilderness. This is why it is essential to have volunteers help with this grant. They are recruiting volunteers to do trail work in this beautiful wilderness.

The only requirement is that participants be physically fit enough to hike several miles in warm/hot weather. Ben Prater says, “Our hope is that the volunteers will help remove these non-native plants and then be able to go back home with their knowledge and educate neighbors, and also help remove invasive plants from their own backyards.”

Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, also known as the Grand Canyon of the East, is one of the wildest, most rugged gorges in the eastern United States. It’s also an outdoor paradise for hikers and backpackers. There are over 39 miles of trails that weave in and around the area. Most of the trails head down towards the Linville River and are steep and strenuous for hikers, but offer picturesque views and challenging hikes.

The Linville Gorge lies entirely within the Pisgah National Forest and is managed by the Grandfather Ranger District of the United States Forest Service. It’s located roughly 60 miles northeast of Asheville and can be accessed via the Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 314. The Gorge encompasses more than 12,000 acres around the Linville River, making it the third largest wilderness area in North Carolina, and one of only two wilderness gorges in the southern United States.

A grant from Together Green has Wild South and Linville Gorge working together to eradicate non-native plants from the wilderness area. Wild South is non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire people to enjoy, value and protect the wild character and natural legacy of the South. Their vision is for people of all ages to appreciate, enjoy and be responsible for the care of public land now and for future generations.

As summer comes to a close and autumn starts to reveal her natural colors, and the mountains of the Linville Gorge Wilderness come alive like an artist’s pallet, Wild South, whose motto is to “Get Outside, Play and Take Action,” had a wonderful event this past Labor Day. The all-day festival was called “Wild Things” and featured many creature presentations, which included wolves and amphibians, as well as “turtle dogs”! Award-winning films with guest speakers were only a few of the entertaining venues. And a great time was had by all.

With the days getting cooler and the weather more enjoyable, several day hikes and backpacking trips are being planned this fall for the removal of the non-native plants. These experts have so much on their daily schedule, appointments are often set a mere 15 minutes apart, leaving little room for follow-up questions or concerns from the patients. With the baby-boom population reaching the age of retirement, this tight schedule will only get tighter; but the people behind The Hearing Care Center do things differently, starting with dedication to the cares and concerns of each and every patient seeking better hearing.

“We schedule each patient for an independent consultation, where we set aside an hour and a half to focus on his or her needs,” said Carol Rexrode, Owner and National Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist. “We discuss lifestyle, dexterity, cosmetic concerns, and determine what level of hearing aid will meet their needs. Once we have done that, we counsel them on the use and care of their hearing aids and schedule a number of follow-up visits during the next couple of months to make sure the fit and level is correct. Once that is settled, we see them every three to four months to clean, check and fine-tune the aid for the life of the device.”

Rexrode and her staff have completed exhaustive training in order to provide premier hearing aid care. “As a rule, we get about 40 hours of hands-on, workshop training per year through continuing education,” said Rexrode. utilize the newest technology available for hearing aids, so they can pass the information along to the patients.

“The technology has changed dramatically, especially in the last five years,” said Rexrode. “We now have Bluetooth technology that allows hearing aids to work with signals delivered wirelessly and consistently. We also have computer chips that are much faster now, up to a 32-bit processor. These new innovations allow us to fine-tune the programming of the hearing aids and improve the sound quality based on our patients’ needs. We have one patient that is a bird watcher, and we have a program that improves high frequency sounds for her. These programs can be changed by the patient, as well through a listening button or a remote control.”

This advancement has also given those who would like to keep their hearing aid use hidden the ability to do so. This can be especially important for younger wearers.

“We have treated folks that worked in textiles and were subjected to loud noise for hours a day that led to hearing loss,” said Rexrode.

“We also work with young people with medical conditions that have experienced hearing loss.”

The Hearing Care Center can also work within the constraints of a budget. “We offer payment plans through Care Credit that include a year with no interest,” said Rexrode.

“Since most insurance does not cover hearing aids, it is important to us to work with our patients to find something that works for them and for their budgets. If a patient truly can’t afford to make the payments, we can direct them to programs that can help.”

No matter what the needs of the patients who walk into The Hearing Care Center, Rexrode and her staff are happy to help find the best fit.

“We are improving the quality of life through better hearing,” said Rexrode.

HBAWS Fall Parade

Corbett year, the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem (HBAWS) hosts several events to further the community’s knowledge of the various businesses and professionals involved in new home construction. According to its website, the HBAWS “…represents its professional membership to promote and support the home building/remodeling industry.”

This year marks the HBAWS’ celebration of 50 years of Parades with the annual Fall Parade of Homes. “One of the main reasons to charter a local HBA was to have a Parade of Homes,” said Jerry Herman, Executive Vice President of the HBAWS. “The main objective for the Parade is to market new construction from the local builders, as well as new products and services related to the industry. These HBA members display high integrity and are licensed and insured. The membership is responsible for the origination and continuation of this event over the years.

A committee of both builder and associate members plans the event, and the staff manages the many components to make it successful.

Over the years, it has expanded into judging, the Golden Home Awards and a featured Association Home project.”

Rich Achor, ARENA Builders, constructed this year’s featured Association Home and the HBAWS is extremely proud of its selection.

“Each year, a committee reviews proposals from builders that are interested in building this premier project,” said Herman. “The three criteria that are measured are the location, the home plans and the budget. What makes this project special is that many of our associate company members get involved by donating or discounting products and services. These members benefit by showcasing their work and receiving marketing exposure, as well.

The proceeds from the home sale go to supplement the HBA budget, so that other fees can be kept at a minimum.”

The location for this year’s Association Home is the beautiful neighborhood of Brookberry Farm. “The home is across from the pool and tennis courts and has a large, level backyard,” said Herman.

“The yard has a nice-looking, terraced planting area at the back that will allow for the outside living area to adjoin the spacious green lawn.

The exterior is nearly finished with some fantastic stonework that accents the brick.”

The home has four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms in 4,245 square feet. There is a keeping room off the kitchen with a stone and wood-beam fireplace, bullnose corners throughout, a mudroom with built-in sitting nook, separate dining room, library with a wood-stained, built-in bookshelf, outdoor living space that includes a patio with stone fireplace and knee wall, plus tongue-and-groove, stained pine ceiling.

Upstairs features a beautiful media room.

In addition to the spectacular Association Home, the Parade showcases dozens of other fantastic homes in the area for those interested in building, buying, or just seeing what’s available. To highlight the other homes on the Parade, the HBAWS has created a magazine to replace the traditional newsprint tabloid format used in past years. “They will be available at any of the 40+ homes in the Parade of Homes,” said Herman. “The public is not simply interested in seeing the details of each home as they walk through; they also appreciate having a quality resource to refer to in the future. The new four-color magazine provides consumers with contact information for home builders and realtors, along with a list of member companies providing products and services for Parade homes.” No matter where you may be in your hunt, the Parade has something to satisfy all interests in the home market.

all love the crisp air, the beautiful colors and wonderful activities of Fall. When taking children out for adventure, at what age are they ready to be scared?

Best for All Ages Corn mazes in the Triad are a wonderful Fall activity for all ages. Many groups enjoy using these facilities as team-building practices, while families enjoy the day out together. Even with no age limit to the maze, there are a few things to keep in mind when taking the children.

Take only pictures; leave only footprints. This is an artwork of nature; leave it as you found it, so many can enjoy it during the season.

Make sure children see an aerial picture of the maze; this inspires them to respect the property, but also see the big picture.

Work as a group or in teams. Sometimes, for little children, a corn maze can get scary if they find themselves alone. Make sure everyone in the family stays with a buddy. Try making it a team challenge, seeing who exits the maze first.

Many corn mazes are also working farms; respect the animals that live there by not chasing them or raising your voice.

Always keep the weather in mind; if you are traveling to the mountains, always dress in layers, as the weather changes quickly and can become very cold. It is a great idea to call the corn maze owners first if there’s a possibility of inclement weather, making sure it is open.

If your child has watched horror movies (the Freddie and Jason variety) and loves them, then they will love the attraction. If they haven’t, then I would think twice about Woods of Terror. We had read the books aloud together as a family and watched the first two movies with the kids (saving the others for when they are older). For the party, I spent a lot of time on Google and Pinterest searching out party recipes, decorations, free printables and games. If you have a printer, this can be a budget-friendly party, since the autumn and Halloween decorations you already have work well with this theme and the dollar store is a great resource.

We dipped the ends of Pepperidge Farm Pirouettes (large pretzel rods or licorice strips would also work) into chocolate and sprinkled with jimmies for “Olivander's Magic Wands.” We bagged multi-flavored jelly beans in small bags and topped them with a “Bertie Bott's Every Flavored Beans” free printable label we found online. Hit your local dollar store up for eyeball gum balls and label the jar “Mad Eye Moody Gum.” Ferrero Rocher hazelnut chocolates wrapped in gold foil make perfect Golden Snitches, when silver scrapbook paper wings are added! For the cake, there are several options out there depending on your budget, if buying a cake, and skill level, if making it at home. We decided on some Hedwig cupcakes, which were pretty easy to make or assemble.

One Harry Potter party essential is Butter Beer.

There are several recipes out there. We tested a few and settled on the kid-friendly cream soda with 2 teaspoons of vanilla added, topped with whipped cream and drizzled with caramel syrup.

Butter Beer mugs can be found at the dollar Store. We also served Pumpkin Juice, which was actually V8 Splash—tasty and the right color!

m&ms slivered almonds Directions: 1- Open two Oreo cookies. Place two of the sides with cream on the frosted cupcake for Hedwig’s eyes.

2- Place an m&m on each Oreo half for the pupil of Hedwig’s eyes (looking in the same direction), printed “m” side down.

3- Cut a yellow or orange m&m in half and place as the “beak.”

4- Cut 3 orange or yellow m&m’s in half and place 3 on the bottom right and 3 on the bottom left of each cupcake to resemble Hedwig’s claws.

5- Place a few slivered almonds above each Oreo “eye” in a point to resemble the owl’s “ears.”

Place a few more under the eyes to resemble breast feathers.

Activities Make Magic Wands: Before the party, squiggle hot glue onto dowel rods found at craft stores, with a heavy dose wrapping one end for the handle. Early in the party, so they’ll have time to dry while the festivities continue, let the kids paint their wands the colors of their choice, including metallics for a magical look.

Kids loved the Bertie Bott’s Every Flavored Bean Taste Test. Since our guests were young, we made it easy with multiple choice, with each guest getting the same flavor bean for each round and raising their hand after a list of two particularly ghoulish options were listed, and then the correct one. For example, for cinnamon, we asked, "Raise your hand if you think your bean is Dragon’s Breath, Ear Wax, or Cinnamon. This was a big hit and the kids went back to do more later

If you’re adventurous and handy, spray-paint hula hoops and mount on posts for an outdoor game of Quidditch, hiding the golden snitch (a goldpainted ball) in the grass for the seekers to find while the others bat a ball into the hoops for points.

Potions Class: Our biggest activity was potions class. There are several “recipes” available by searching for “kid potions” and “kid science experiment,” most involving vinegar and baking soda. Tiny potions bottles are available online, but I found a good deal on test tubes on Amazon.com and the kids loved how they fizzed and overflowed out of them.

It’s not as messy as an actual jack-o-lantern and is safer if you use LED tea lights, found at the dollar store in 3-packs!

“Where’s the Beef”

Peller would have stood in solidarity with me on this one. You may not immediately recognize this name, but odds are, if you are at least in your “thirtysomethings,” you'll recognize her immortal catchphrase. Back in the 1980s, Wendy’s sought to tout that their hamburgers had something that the other fast food restaurants lacked—a generous portion of meat. In their commercials, they employed three geriatric ladies who marveled over the size of the bun, but when lifted, revealed only a miniscule bovine patty, to which one of the aged women, Clara Peller, harshly questioned, “Where’s the beef?” Pithy as it was, this promotion resulted in a thirty-one percent increase in revenue for Wendy’s. Oh, but where is our Clara now? She is so needed.

Just yesterday, I sat down at one of the local, chain, fast-food restaurants and unwrapped a new gut-bomb burger that I had yet to sample.

My senses were inundated with signals of impending pleasure. It felt fresh, smelled divine, and even hissed with heat still emanating from deep within its core. My eyes scanned this bountiful feast resting in my hands, just inches from my salivating mouth. I saw the delicately placed layers of complements to the sizzling burger—mushrooms and Swiss cheese—just

waiting to attack my waiting taste buds. Slowly I bit down into the juice-laden sandwich, wanting to savor the first bite. At first, it seemed as wonderful as I had hoped, but as I began to chew, the mixture of flavors began to conjure up an odd taste—not a bad one, but unexpected.

I pulled the behemoth burger from my mouth and continued to chew as I surveyed its construction, which was now more defined due to the distinctive bite pattern gouged into its depths. Calculating the various components, I mentally checked off the ingredients: lower bun, check. Beef patty—check. Swiss cheese—yep.

Mushrooms—they’re there. More Swiss cheese—yes....no, wait. Why is it not the same color? Why is it more gooey than the other slice? Why is it so much thicker, too? Oh, no, it’s because it’s NOT more Swiss cheese—IT’S MAYONNAISE and A LOT OF IT! Now friends, let me say that I don’t have an aversion to mayonnaise, but let’s be straight about this— mayonnaise is a condiment on a burger. It is not the main ingredient and it should definitely not be applied to the point that it adds height to the sandwich’s dimension. Not wanting to take a chance in asking for another sandwich, which I feared may have some other unwanted condiment covertly added, I muddled on through the meal, becoming more disappointed with each bite.

This experience reminded me of the need to be genuine, even and especially in our faith walk.

In the Book of Acts, we are given a brief glimpse of some traveling preachers who claimed to have the power to exorcise demons. The problem was, they said some good words and mimicked what they had observed the apostle Paul doing, but they didn’t have the heartknowledge to back it up. We read that the demons saw right through their pious facade and pounced on them. Now, I doubt too many of us would so naive to play chicken with a demon, but in our daily life, we are just as studied and tested by others, because people are constantly inspecting us to see if our words match up with our lives. Like it or not, our lives are open for others to sample. When people know you claim to be a follower of Christ, they are going to look beyond your words as they try to taste and see if this Christianity thing is all that it is touted to be.

Years ago, Clara Peller led the revolution in recognizing that a big bun didn’t necessarily mean a hearty burger. Yesterday, I became cognizant that “holy talk” isn’t indicative of a deep spiritual faith; it may just be “extra mayonnaise,” which takes away from the goodness for which people hunger.

the world as we know it—and it was no easy task. God took Henry through many years of frustration to get to a place to see it through.

You may have heard that it took Edison three thousand wrong theories to get the right formula for the electric light bulb element. Henry, born in 1863, went to work for Edison in 1891 and in 1893 became his chief engineer at age 30. He used the extra money to work on gasoline engines and experimented on the idea of a motor car. No doubt his association with Edison gave him the encouragement to keep on with his passion. I might point out that Edison’s work shop is in the Henry Ford Museum at http://www.thehenryford.org/village/index.aspx Greenfield Village, where Henry grew up.

I’m sure it would come as no surprise to anyone that Henry Ford would be among my heroes; what might surprise you is why. No, it’s not because he invented the assembly line, or brought the American automobile manufactures to world prominence.

I literally hate his anti-Semitic views, as any Christian should.

I disagree with many of his politics, as well as what he did with his money, and could find all sorts of faults in his lifestyle.

What makes Henry Ford one of my heroes was his passion, a passion strong enough to quit two car companies he helped get off the ground, because they wouldn’t buy into his dream. One of them started out as the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Ford_Company. and later became Cadillac when he left, (sort of ironic, if you know the story of Henry’s passion). Henry was uncompromising on this, it really wasn’t as much about success financially it was about bringing about Henry’s dream. What was this passion that, in my view, changed, the world for the better?

Henry simply wanted to build a high-quality car that was inexpensive enough that his workers could buy it (without going into debt for seven years). Simple, yes, but oh, what this uncompromising passion did for

At age 43, in 1908, things began to fall into place; the new http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Motor_Company" Ford Motor Company, started in 1903, launched the Model T at an astonishing $825—but that wasn’t good enough for Henry. Unlike many businesses of today, he continued to drop the price every year. Henry’s passion drove him to look for every way of cutting costs. The assembly line was a result of this passion, not just for making a profit. That passion drove him to even ask his suppliers to ship parts in specifically sized wooden crates, so he could use the crates as floor boards for the Model T. Later he even helped found Kings“FORD” charcoal by creating charcoal from the other wood scraps. It’s amazing what the non-wasteful mind will think of—or perhaps there was an unnamed assistant that helped him dream.

When Henry saw his dream of building a car his workers could afford coming closer, he slam-dunked it in 1914 by both dropping the price to $360 for the basic model and increasing his workers’ wages to an unheard-of five dollars a day. That meant that a worker could buy this car for 72 days’ wages. Compare that with an average American wage today of about http://www.ssa.gov/oact/cola/AWI.html $133 and an average car at http://www.autoblog.com/2012/04/11/average-priceof-new-cars-hits-all-time-record/ $30,478! That is equal to 229 days wages; or, with the least expensive American car today, a Ford Focus at http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2009/05/top-40-best-dealson-americanmade-cars.html $16,552, it would take an average American 124 days to buy it.

If only we had stayed on Henry’s trend, it would have put the whole world—China, India and all countries—to work building cars for everyone. What if the average worker in India or China could buy a car,

do we have any clue how many people we could put to work? The poverty and hunger and pain would end.

If the goal of a corporation is to make a big profit, they lose sight of Henry’s passion. If you wonder what happened to American dominance in automotive manufacturing, it’s all too simple—we lost Henry’s passion to build cars that everyone could afford to own, not just Americans, but everyone. The pathology is all too oblivious to any car salesperson today.

Just ask anybody you know in the car business how many customers they see that owe way more on their car than it’s worth; be ready, what they tell you will scare you.

Don’t get me wrong; I know business has to make a profit, but I don’t believe that should be the purpose. In my view, the purpose, like Henry’s, should be to improve the lives of others, however you have been gifted or vocationally trained. Most of us will never get to make the impact that Henry did, but we will never know what God will do through us if we don’t try.

Kelly Moore had always dreamed of having children.

However, the Pastor who presides at Fries Moravian Church wanted to wait a few years after marrying her husband. “We had been married for close to seven years and we decided that we “both had always felt like we wanted to have children.” Unfortunately, timing wasn’t the only obstacle the couple would have to deal with. “I conceived several times—five that we knew of—but was never able to carry to term,” Moore said. “After many medical tests and doctors’ visits, they [the

could be as short as a week or as long as several years,” said the Pastor.

“This was in July of 2005.”

After taking a short break from the adoption process, the two decided to begin the process to buy a home. It was during this transition that an important call came through. “Upon returning home from our walk-through [December 16] of our home, we received a call from the Safe House saying they thought they had a child for us,” said Moore. After this call, everything happened very quickly.

“Zachary was born December 21,” continued the Pastor, “and we brought

“We were then faced with a choice: we could continue to try to deal with the infertility and perhaps do invitro, or we could look into adoption.”

The pastor and her husband, who also is a pastor, were deciding whether or not to move from North Carolina to Georgia, when life revealed a possible solution. “In January of 2005, we were in Stone Mountain, GA, for a meeting with a church that had issued a call to us to be their pastors,” she explained.

“We were in the hotel getting ready for our meeting when an adoption agency’s commercial came on,” said the pastor. “I began thinking to myself, ‘Yeah, I guess there might be more resources here in the Metro Atlanta area than in small-town North Carolina,” she said.

While the commercial served as a reminder that adoption was a definite possibility, it wasn’t until Moore began talking with a fellow church member that her pathway to becoming a mother became clearer. “We had a church member suggest we talk to the director of the Safe House Outreach, which had a satellite site in Tucker, a town just down from where we lived.” she explained.

After researching Safe House, Moore and her husband decided to meet with a woman who possibly could be the future mother of their unborn child. “We met with her [the mother] in July and also began the massive stack of paperwork that went with adoption through a state agency.”

After deciding to go forward with adoption, the couple learned that Safe House was not the traditional adoption agency they first considered.

“When we first met with the folks from the Safe House Outreach, we were told that they were not an adoption agency,” she explained. “Rather, they were an agency that helped lots of at-risk mothers, most of them teens, learn how to be effective and good parents.” Yet, it was possible to find children for adoption through the program. “They did say they had frequently known girls who wanted to give up their children and would let us know if they had anyone,” she ended. The excited pastors were than faced with the fact that the process could be a difficult one, regarding time. “They cautioned us that it

While the two were thrilled with the news, it was difficult to learn about the life of the birth mother. “We found out that this child would be born to a severely drug-addicted woman and one that had not sought out any prenatal care,” said Moore. “On top of that, she lived underneath a bridge.” Still, the two wanted to meet with the mother. Unfortunately, the moments before the meeting were extremely anxiety-ridden for the Pastor, who relied on God to help her through.

“God’s grace was ever-present in that encounter—sure, we saw a roughlooking street person, but a sweet spirit filled her hard outer shell,” she said.

Still the journey that week was filled with mixed emotions. “We were fully committed to adopting this baby, but we didn’t know what to do for the mother until she gave birth,” explained husband Joe Moore.

“We couldn’t let her stay on the street while still pregnant and we couldn’t have her move in with us.” The two decided to pay for her stay in a hotel for another night to give them time to come up with a plan.

“I picked her up and took her to the hotel where she wanted to stay,” he explained. “It was called The Master’s Inn.” Pastor Moore then went to the desk to pay for the room, but was quickly turned away by the innkeeper, who didn’t think the homeless woman was the right clientele for his establishment. “No room in the inn for a homeless, pregnant woman five days before Christmas?” thought the Pastor. “It was almost too much to believe.”

While the two spent the rest of the night angstridden and barely able to sleep, at 1:30 a.m., their phone rang. “It was the director of the Safehouse,” said husband Joe Moore. The couple, who had waited so long for their first child, was estatic to learn that the very night they couldn’t find lodging, their son Zachary was born.

By Sarah Fedele force of nature. A force of faith. “Lillie has so much personality,” shares Elizabeth Edwards, Lillie’s mother. “I couldn’t keep her down if I wanted to.”

Lillie was born on October 24, 2006, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The next morning, all was thought to be fine, until the pediatrician went to check on Lillie and didn’t return. When Elizabeth (Liz) and Tripp went to check on their newborn baby, they found her in the middle of an echocardiogram, a cardiac ultrasound. It was discovered that Lillie was born with five different congenital heart defects, the most serious being that Lillie’s heart did not have an aortic arch—a life and death situation for a newborn.

“We were told to pack our bags and that we may not be bringing our baby home,” remembers Tripp. Lillie was transported to Brenner Children’s Hospital at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and spent a week in the neonatal intensive care. “Every day was life-or-death for Lillie,” shares Liz. “Our job was to be Lillie’s advocate. We learned to never leave her side. I discovered an ‘inner-mommy’ voice that I didn’t even know I had, and I learned to make it loud.”

At seven days old, Lillie had her first open-heart surgery. During the six hours of her surgery, family and friends flooded the waiting room. However, the look on the faces of their loved ones exposed the emotional hurricane of worry and fear, mixed with faith and hope.

“When we brought Lillie home, she was sore, but spunky. Her personality was already starting to show,” shares Tripp.

Lillie had her second open-heart surgery at 10 months old. There were no signs that anything was wrong. A cardiac catheterization showed that Lillie had a 70% blockage in her aortic arch. Lillie was in the hospital for three days and recovered well. “She has an echocardiogram every six months and will do that for the rest of her life,” says Elizabeth. “We are always sitting on the edge of our seats.”

She will be having a third open heart surgery as early as this month. “It has been five years since Lillie’s last open-heart surgery and it is never easy. However, this time it is different.

Lillie is old enough to know what is happening,” shares Liz. Her third surgery will be addressing another defect in her heart, aortic stenosis, resulting in a possible valve replacement surgery.

“I don’t know if I will ever learn to relax when it comes to Lillie’s health,” says Liz. “But the more I have learned about Lillie’s personality, I’ve had to learn to let her go and allow her to enjoy life.

With the support of our family, especially my twin sister, Sarah, and our church, we have learned how to cope with what comes. Every day we have with Lillie, we count as a blessing.”

One out of every 100 babies is born with congenital heart disease.

Congenital heart defects are the No.1 birth defect in the U.S. and the world, causing more infant deaths than all childhood cancers combined.

Not only are more children and families facing heart issues, more children are growing into adults living with congenital heart defects. “We hope to increase the focus on congenital heart disease in the Triad,” proclaims Liz. “With greater awareness, education and research, more can be done to help families stand strong through the storm and look to the future with hope.”

This is Lillie’s fifth time raising funds and participating in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. The Tanglewood Heart and Stroke Walk, sponsored by Wake Forest Baptist Health and TE Connectivity, will take place on Saturday, October 20, at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons.

When children need restorative care for their teeth, it’s natural for young patients – and their parents – to have some anxiety about the process. Though our caring and patient staff is sometimes enough to take the edge off a worried young one, there are time when nitrous oxide, conscious sedation and sometimes outpatient general anesthesia are needed to facilitate the dental work.

We evaluate each patient individually and make decisions about any type of anesthesia according to the child’s needs.

Here are some options we utilize in our office to help everyone feel more at ease: Local Anesthesia is used for most restorative procedure. A topical anesthetic is used to help numb the area, and patients may feel a small “pinch” at the injection site.

Nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) is used to relax a mildly anxious child and is administered with oxygen during a restorative appointment. A small “elephant nose” or nasal hood is placed over the child’s nose with their preferred smell (cotton candy is always a favorite) and they are encouraged to breathe through their nose.

Conscious Sedation may be used depending on the complexity of the treatment. The child is typically given medication to drink to help make her drowsy, but it does not put her to sleep.

General Anesthesia is not used lightly and should take into consideration a child’s age, anxiety level, extensive treatment needs and emotional wellbeing. A licensed anesthesiologist must administer general anesthesia and be present throughout the procedure.

If your child requires some dental attention that may be a bit lengthy, or if she is worried about the procedure, don’t hesitate to ask your provider about all the options available to determine what is best for the situation.

Perhaps you have put it together that I am a stay-at-home dad who conducts various experiments, both successful and unsuccessful, in how to conquer the things we parents encounter daily.

There has been previous mention in this column of naptime, and how I have driven my son in the car for upwards of 30 minutes to induce drowsiness. Granted, it sometimes would induce MY drowsiness, instead of his. And so, he and I recently had a onesided conversation that went something like this: “Son, now that gas is northwards of $3.80 a gallon, we shall no longer be driving around the neighborhood before nite nite time. OK?” I think he understands.

My talented wife has recently started to pursue a degree in a field in which she excels and she adores. The coursework has begun, and three nights a week I try to recall how my wife gracefully concludes any day with our little one. I use my own training under her tutelage to piece together some semblance of normalcy for my son in her absence.

With the late summer light still barely present outside at my son’s bedtime, I have been known to rock him in my arms in the darkened room, replete with opaque shades that Dracula would envy. Once asleep, he and I have maneuvered in an embrace to his bed. If anyone were to have entered the room a full five minutes later, they would have thought my son and I had been wrestling, he had pinned me and then decided to celebrate his victory by falling fast asleep upon me.

I am eternally grateful to my wife, who is the smartest adult member of our family. She has always insisted that routine and repetition are the keys to getting him to sleep, or to do anything of consequence.

The routine that now seems to work is to bathe him, dress him in his sleep onesie, let him take a sip of water until he says, “All done,” and then glide into the darkened cave. We fall upon the bed side by side and he mutters sweetly: “Sing!” He frankly wants me to break into a guttural hum of “Twinkle Twinkle” or “You Are My Sunshine.” I start 72 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

out strong enough with all the notes in the right place, but eventually my lips and mind go a bit numb, and the versions get shortened, improvised and less spirited.

On those three nights in question, my wife returns home and we move into “maintain” mode, where we say our collective prayers that my son will grant us at least 4–6 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

One time, I crept deliriously into his room to pick him up and launched into my “Dada is here” exercise in the dark. I felt where one of his arms was, located the other arm, curled my hands around both and picked him up. I brought him close and was confused by how heavy he had grown in the middle of the night. Normally, it wasn’t difficult to balance his weight and hold him securely. It took another 3 seconds to realize I had my poor unsuspecting baby upside down. I had gripped his legs and not his arms. My wife has suggested that I don’t make that part of any routine.

As parents, we all hold fast to the probability that eventually all children get to a point where they sleep successfully, eat enough of the right things and become their own confident selves. Then, apparently, some grow to be teenagers, when you cannot get them to stop sleeping, they won’t stop eating and are almost too confident. But I am happily aboard the roller coaster of parenthood, holding tight during the twists, the turns and the victories each day and sometimes…as my new favorite song says… all through the night.

Let’s Talk Month

“Mommy, where do babies come from?”

Parents often gulp at this, knowing that it’s the first of many questions from their children about sexuality. Parents may feel unprepared and unsure about answering questions about physical development, relationships and sexual activity; however, it is critical that they do so in an informative and supportive way. October is Let’s Talk Month, a national public education campaign dedicated to encouraging parent/child communication about sexuality. The importance of open and honest conversations between parents and teens about sex cannot be overstated. Polling by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy reveals that parents are the number-one influence when it comes to their teenager's decision to have sex, and 80% of teens said that it would be much easier for them to delay sexual activity and avoid teen pregnancy, if they were able to have more open, honest conversations about these topics with their parents.

Recognizing that these kinds of conversations may be difficult for many parents, The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem encourages faith-based and community organizations to provide workshops and information that give parents the tools needed to increase their comfort level and become more approachable. Earlier this year, The Women’s Fund provided mini-grants and other resources to community organizations that wanted to implement these types of workshops and do more to address teen pregnancy prevention.

One such grant was awarded to Imprints for Families, a family-support agency. Imprints collaborated with El Buen Pastor Latino Community Services. During El Buen Pastor’s summer camp programs, the youth were provided with the ¡Cuidate! (“Take Care of Yourself”) program. ¡Cuidate! is a six-module curriculum that helps Latino youth develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills to act in ways that will support good health and protect them from serious risks related to sexual behavior. Simultaneously, their mothers were provided training using the Parents Matter curriculum, which is designed to enhance protective practices and promote parent-child discussions about sexuality and sexual-risk-reduction. Reverend Rosa Miranda from El Buen Pastor said that this was a great program and that both the parents and the youths were very grateful. “Our parents didn’t know how to start these conversations,” she said, “now they have the tools and knowledge they need.” This October, The Women’s Fund encourages parents to get the knowledge that they need to start having these critical conversations. Family Day Trip: Levering Orchard

I have wonderful memories of apple-picking as Pack House: (276)755-3593 a child at Levering’s Orchard in Ararat, Virginia, with my grandparents and little Fruit Hotline: (336) 786-4316 sister. We would pick several bushels of sweet, yellow apples and other cooking apples and take them home to be peeled and frozen. They’d be “cooked up” later to eat with supper and breakfast, and baked into apple fritters for the next several months. I still remember the sweet smell of the boxes of apples stored in the cool, dark spare room, waiting to be peeled. I now take my own children up to the orchard every fall, hoping to cultivate the same memories for them, although they are (so far) bigger fans of biting into them fresh than cooked soft.

While there are several orchards in the area, Levering’s Orchard is now 104 years old (despite the photo stating “101”) and still family-owned and -operated by its third-generation, Frank Levering. Founded in 1908 as an apple orchard, today, the farm has grown to become the “largest cherry orchard in the South,” including 32 acres of 44 varieties of cherries, as well as producing peaches, nectarines, pears and apricots.

As you make your way north up Highway 52 to Levering Orchard, there are many spots to stop along the way, such as majestic Pilot Mountain for a short hike and picnic, and a visit to the Andy Griffith and Opie statue at the Andy Griffith Playhouse as you drive through “Mayberry” (Mount Airy). You can then break just after crossing the state line in Cana, Virginia, for local produce and hanging plants at the bustling Virginia Carolina Produce & Plants. Enjoy a country lunch at the Hungry Farmer diner, just before turning right onto Epworth Road to head up to the orchard.

With our mild winter, fall apple season started early this year, as with most produce in the region, so “you-pick” started in September and will run through mid-October. However, to be sure, a call to the pack house before your trip is recommended. Expected varieties for “you-pick” this month include Red and Golden Delicious, Stamens, Mutsus and Spartans. Short on time or not—in the mood to pick yourself?

The pack house has crates of the varieties available, and if you plan on cooking them, they’ll even recommend you buy the cheaper “utility grade” apples instead—not as pretty, but just as tasty.

Can’t make it this season? Y’all come back in the spring and summer for cherry picking and peaches, and to enjoy the outdoor Orchard Theatre weekends during the summer months.

Well, Jonathan isn’t most people. “I don’t think anyone is ever ready to leave a White House job, I loved what I did, but we were swamped until the last day. I had no clue what I was going to do next, but I was ready for some down time,” recalled Jonathan.

No Schedule, No Job, No Problem Although Jonathan knew that he wanted a break from life, he didn’t put a lot of thought into what that “break” would include. “I had planned a trip to Austin, TX, to visit a casual acquaintance, and instead of flying, I decided to drive. Since I was already going as far as Austin, I decided to load my bike, visit some friends in Phoenix, AZ, and do some mountain biking in the desert. That was the extent of the planning…a bike, a bag of warm clothes, another of cold-weather gear, and I rolled out on a February day,” Jonathan said.

After years of having every minute planned, Jonathan shifted into “Que sera, sera” (“whatever will be, will be”) mode quickly. “I drove straight to Austin, bought an atlas, and some days were planned and some weren’t. I would drive 2 to 12 hours most days; I never spent the night in my car, but did take a few power naps along the way,” commented Jonathan. With no schedule or no plan, Jonathan had no idea how the next 6 months would play out.

Jonathan put more than 29,340 miles on his car.

He had to get a new set of tires and brake pads, but he also saw a lot of things along the way. “I visited 23 MLB stadiums, including Cooperstown, 13 national parks, 9 Presidential museums, 1 NBA playoff game, 1 UFO museum, 1 Superman museum, the Charles Schultz (Snoopy) Museum and I suffered the indignity of 1 stolen mountain bike and uh, yeah, there were a few speeding tickets. Don’t tell my dad,” Jonathan stated.

A Man Wandering Aimlessly or A Man on a Mission?

“I had saved a decent nest egg over my time at the White House, not because I was frugal, but because I was too busy to spend it. I decided to keep driving until I had seen all that I wanted to see or was out of money. Because, how many times can a man in his late 30s just wander off the grid and do whatever he wants?” commented Jonathan. Eventually it was a Washington, DC, bureaucrat that brought him back. “The trip came

to an end due to a jury summons and the threat of a federal warrant from a particularly cranky court clerk,” commented Jonathan.

With a journey across the country and back, you can imagine that Jonathan learned a few things along the way. One of the big lessons?

“Don’t trust ‘Dollar Dog Day’ at the Oakland Athletics stadium. That was a miserable case of food poisoning,” Jonathan said.

Beyond the hot dog lesson, Jonathan saw towns and folks along the way and made several observations. “People, for the most part, don’t know their communities anymore and rarely spend time chatting with a random stranger,” recalled Jonathan.

Asked if he discovered anything about himself, Jonathan said, “As any of my girlfriends will tell you, I’m not much for introspection or deep thinking. I guess what I learned about myself was how much I enjoyed wandering aimlessly, both literally and metaphorically,” Jonathan recalled.

Afghanistan…A Great Place to Be…Really?

Upon returning to Washington, DC, Jonathan did some political consulting, but was bored. “A friend emailed me about a position in Afghanistan, teaching Afghans about politics. That opportunity, paired with the fact that I had grown a really cool beard and didn’t want to shave it, made this job sound appealing. Everyone kept telling me, ‘You’re going to finally get a real job.’ I decided to prove them wrong by moving to Afghanistan. I can assure you it wasn’t out of any sense of public service,” said Jonathan.

Second thoughts would kick in every time he was at Dulles International, about to fly out. “I thought, ‘you can walk outta here and be hanging out with friends in an hour, and no one would fault you for it. Or you can go to Afghanistan…so why am I

doing this?’ That said, I never had any regrets and am thankful and blessed to have had the opportunity,” Jonathan commented.

Jonathan settled into his life on a guarded compound and established his daily routine, which would see him through the next 13 months. But, after a week or so, he deviated from his routine one day just long enough to say hello to a little four- legged Afghan outside the compound.

TheValue of Nothing Alexander Lorenzo Apparel

hope does one have for a child that loses it all by the age of nine? Seemingly in answer, it has been said: “It is in the darkest skies that we see the brightest stars.”

What

The story of Abrein Alexander Crawford and Kenneth Lorenzo Long, Jr. began in Winston-Salem, N.C. during the summer of 1993—specifically, in a housing project called Kimberly Park Terrace. At the tender ages of ten and eleven, the two would become fast friends, bound by shared interest in the arts and in sports. Unfortunately, their environment was rife with drugs and other illegal activities. By all appearances, this was the type of life they were destined to inherit. The two struggled daily to obtain the basic necessities of life. With no guidance, no hope and no money, the two did the unthinkable and started a “G.A.N.G” (Going Against Negativity Globally).

What began as a means of survival, would ultimately transform misplaced anger and confusion into an enduring positive force. This force forever changed their perception of a once-tainted reality.

Their perception was broadened.

So, at the peak of their childhood (not even teenagers yet), the two found themselves raking leaves, taking out trash and occasionally asking for change outside of local stores in an effort to raise money for food and clothing. With crack-infested homes, a drug- plagued neighborhood and absentee fathers, the two made a deal to never perpetuate more-of-the-same. Come the summer of 1995, the boys would make a gesture that would serve as a pivotal moment-of-truth in their young lives. Would they live their vision? In turn, they took the money raised and threw a party for all their neighbors, young and old. There was music and there was dancing; but mostly, there was hope.

With such a convincing experience deeply etched into their maturing psyches, the two discovered that to struggle was by choice, and not necessarily, the norm. Up until that moment, poverty was an insidious, preordained fate. This gloomy outlook is the very mindset that causes a society of less fortunate adolescents to commit moral suicide before they give themselves a chance to better grasp life’s potential. Typically, children in an impoverished community dream the dream of becoming a world-renowned rapper or superstar athlete; then the dreams fade to gray.

For Kenneth and Abrein, most of their peers did become vulnerable and sought credibility through a short-lived life of pseudo-success and gratification in the form of selling drugs, and through violence. However,

for these two, hope was grasped and they believed life had more to offer them. They found this hope in two people that many would perceive as the epitome of hopelessness—their single mothers. Their mothers seemed weak, ill-fated at heart and underachieving, but they still were the foundation that helped build up their sons into the men they are today. It was hindsight that allowed both to better appreciate the blessings of these women. Post-plight, we see two women who bore, nurtured and sustained lives against the grain of a malignant climate with absolutely no help. In short, there is an immeasurable amount of wisdom and key lessons of perseverance that can be gained from their pain.

At the time and with some awareness of this, a much younger Abrein and Kenneth simply wanted to give hope to their mothers who had become immobilized by a black cloud of despair. Then with adolescence, came a much colder, more convoluted existence. The presence of death was more prominent, the atmosphere more volatile and the pain more intense.

Miraculously, the one thing that remained omnipotent was their faith in God. Through all of the darkness, the two constantly had premonitions of becoming great and leaving a legacy. In retrospect, it was as if some celestial force guided them through this tumultuous storm.

In 1998, at the ages of 15 and 16, the two would merge minds to design an exit strategy. They chose a road-less-traveled for inner-city children— that of creating a clothing line. The boys made money selling shirts in surrounding communities and schools. As the years progressed, the business grew into one that serves as a true mark of leadership, class and success. Their vision took the shape of a current clothing line named Alexander Lorenzo Apparel.

The main lesson learned by both men is that pain can be transformed into a fire that either fuels the soul or remains an inferno to all hopes and dreams. Some people can accept being a speck in this boundless universe, while other individuals hunger to be part of the life force that feeds it. For the individual to strive to become noteworthy in his or her lifetime is at best a realized blessing, and at worst, a painful test of creative fortitude. Some are born into the spotlight, while others create their own. Nonetheless, the day will come when we all will depart the earth. Given that we cannot live forever, we should leave behind something that can...a legacy.

So, if you decide to stay home and pass out candy, try a movie to get you in the Halloween mood. Horror movies, of course, are a great way to find the spooky spirit. Not all horror movies make your skin crawl. Some scary classics in black and white bring back memories for your parents, while newer comedy horror movies make you laugh more often than they make you jump out of your seat. Some scary films are part sci-fi and part horror (think Aliens), while the pure gore, blood-and-guts options are not for the faint of heart (aka the Saw series). Figuring out which type of horror category you enjoy most, helps you determine if you need to rent, borrow, or purchase your choices ahead of Halloween night and get in the spirit. Below are a few suggestions for your movie night on Halloween.

Everyone knows they sell great cars at competitive prices under the umbrella of fantastic customer service, but what you may not know is how much the people behind the business care about the community.

“The Storybook Soiree” in Winston-Salem

September 7th, around 400 people attended the 11th annual Storybook Soiree that was held at the Wake Forest Biotech Place. This is the largest annual fundraiser benefiting the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem.

The venue was set into motion as guests enjoyed entertainment by Virtual Sounds. An extraordinary décor that was cutting-edge transported the guests into a trendy “New York evening.” The theme of the party was “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein, a story of unconditional love between a boy and a tree. The Soiree Committee interprets the story as a metaphor for the museum’s relationship with the community. There was a fabulous silent and live auction where some of the winners went home with trips to Vail and the beach, with charter fishing excursions, unique jewelry and artwork, dinner and wine packages, and more. In correlation with the theme of the event, there was a 22-foot (live) “Giving Tree,” where guests could buy a leaf from the tree for $10, and each leaf had a $10— $100 gift certificate. Guests essentially gave to the tree, and the tree gave back.

After the party was over, no one was in a hurry to leave this sensational evening of fun and excitement. Small Stories for a Big World

By Kim Underwood is a church retreat center in the mountains of North Carolina. It keeps company with the town of Black Mountain. So, after walking around the lake or playing in the stream, you can go into town for some lunch. I have been going up there ever since I was a kid, and, over the years, I have accumulated a number of stories.

One is about the only day that my brother and sisters and I ever went swimming in the lake. These days, swimming is not allowed. When I was a kid, a platform sat in the middle of the lake and you could swim out to it. The water was quite cold, though, and the day that we worked up the nerve to swim out to the platform, we couldn’t imagine ever jumping back in, once we climbed out. We sat there for what seemed like hours, before we could bring ourselves to brave the freezing water again.

may be repeating a story, I might ask. When, on the family’s mostrecent trip to Montreat, I asked Sparkle Girl and Doobins whether I had told them a particular story, the tired “Yes” from both told me it was time to retire the old Montreat stories, as far as they were concerned.

I did come home with a new story, though. Below the lake is a park where the stream is particularly easy to access. There, dams and other rock marvels in the stream make it clear that countless youngsters have been at work. With great enthusiasm, Doobins set to work moving rocks. If we had waited until he was played out, there’s no telling how long we would have been there. Eventually, Garnet and I said that it was time to go into Black Mountain to eat.

When I was a kid listening to someone telling a story for the umpteenth time, I swore to myself that, when I grew up, I would never do that.

Unlike me, Doobins doesn’t consistently clean his plate, so Garnet and I were delighted to see him tuck into his kid’s individual cheese pizza as soon as the waitress put it on the table in front of him. When it was gone, he looked over at Sparkle Girl’s plate. She, too, had ordered an individual pizza.

Of course, I do.

“Are you going to eat those crusts?” he asked her.

A common theme of repeated stories I heard as a kid was how much cheaper things were in the old days. Now I tell the same sorts of stories. When I was his or her age, I might tell a kid, it cost a quarter to go the movies. Not only that, but the theater in Williamson, W.Va., showed a double feature for a quarter. Another time, I might tell him or her that, in the days when my allowance was a quarter a week and candy bars cost a nickel, I once found a dollar in the parking lot of the bank. It’s the richest I have ever felt.

Garnet, Sparkle Girl and I all looked at each other in surprise. Never before had our boy expressed even marginal interest in the food from someone else’s plate. He was welcome to them, Sparkle Girl said, pushing the plate in his direction.

Although I long ago broke my vow not to repeat stories, I do make an effort not to wear out my story-telling welcome. If I suspect that I

Spooktacular Recipes to make with the Kids

Not only do they get to adopt a disguise or take on their favorite character in a book, but candy and treats abound. Wither you’re throwing a Halloween Monster Bash or trying on Halloween costumes, you can create these recipes with the kids and get into the spooky spirit this Halloween.
