The View From My Section: Parenting 101 – Learning to Delegate Responsibilities

August has become one of my favorite months over the past few years, because it happens to be the month we take our family vacation. We are fortunate enough that our college age kids still come along and it’s a week I look forward to all year long! One whole week of relaxation and unplanned fun in the sun! While family vacations are not always synonymous with relaxing and stress-free; for the second year in a row, we’re headed to the gulf coast of Florida. You may recall I referred to it as “a little piece of heaven on earth” last year. I discovered a rope floating along in the ocean that was anchored to something below, so that I was able to lie on my raft for hours at a time and not drift anywhere. It was simply heaven for me to just lie there soaking in all the beauty and serenity God had created. I’m counting on a replay of last year in 2013, and whether your vacation is action- packed or relaxing and stress-free, I hope your vacation brings you much joy!

While August signals vacation to many, it also means the lazy, hazy days of summer fun are coming to an end for all those in school. Yes, those big, yellow school buses will soon be running and college kids will be leaving home.

Sniff, sniff! I know I sure will miss having my college girls home!

With school sessions cranking back up, what a fitting month to have Salem Academy & College on the cover. What a wonderful institution we have in our very own backyard! Be sure to check out all they have to offer! I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all those who made my 50th birthday the most spectacular birthday anyone could ever ask for! My sweet husband and daughters and dearest friends ever, Keela Brooke and Sandy, really pulled one over on me. What terrific party planners you all are and quite sneaky, I might add as well! It truly was the best party anyone could ask for! How blessed am I to have so many wonderful people I call family and friends!

Superintendent Beverly Emory

officials in Washington and in Raleigh may bewail the state of public education and predict for it a bleak future, but one person who will never buy into that pessimism is Dr. Beverly Emory. On July 1, she began her tenure as the first female Superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

“Hope is why I’m here after thirty-three years,” Emory says.

“By all measures, improvement continues to happen. There are boatloads of hope, or we wouldn’t be getting results.”

During the seven-and-a-half years she served as Pitt County Schools Superintendent, Emory supervised improvement. End-of-grade math and reading scores rose by double digits.

While Emory was doing something right in Pitt County, retiring Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Superintendent Don Martin and all of his administrators, teachers, parents, and students were attaining similar success.

“What makes such growth remarkable—in both communities— is that it was achieved against a background of cuts to funding for public education. My fear is that we send the message to legislators that it can be done with less money and fewer resources,” Emory says. “We have success because teachers don’t give up.”

Emory has been persistent in her commitment to educational leadership since she decided, while attending North Carolina State University, to change her goal of becoming a veterinarian to one of becoming a teacher. Emory transferred to Appalachian State to take advantage of its excellent education program. She earned her doctorate at Tennessee’s Vanderbilt University.

Emory’s newest goal is to visit all eighty Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools prior to the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.

By July 1, she was halfway there. During these visits, and during public forums, she is listening to administrators, teachers, parents, and members of the business community to try to determine her top priorities as Superintendent.

Emory brings one priority with her: early childhood education.

Children who aren’t reading on grade level by the second grade are in danger of remaining behind their classmates until they graduate…or until they drop out.

“It’s just common sense,” Emory says. “We can put all the money in the world into drop-out prevention, but if kids can’t read, those programs won’t help.”

So, what do teachers, parents, administrators, and superintendents do about this issue, which, for whatever reason, seems to affect minority students most?

“We’ve got to do everything we can to differentiate our approaches early on while kids are still malleable and while they’re still convinced they can be successful,” Emory says. Ruefully, she adds, “I’m talking like it’s simple. It’s a huge challenge. If it were easy, everyone already would have done it.”

One thing that gives the already optimistic Emory additional hope is the Forsyth County community. “I thought in Pitt County we had some good collaboration with the community,” Emory says, “but I’ve been blown away by the amazing community support here in Forsyth.

From business to faith-based, I’m really excited and impressed by the collaborations in our community.”

Very likely, despite decades spent in the service of public education, Emory will need that help. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has about double the number of students in Pitt County Schools. Our system faces the same achievement gap pitfalls and rising test scores/graduation rates that still aren’t high enough to make anyone complacent.

But facing a challenge with passionate intensity has been a hallmark of Emory’s career. “I’m driven by kids and what kids need, and I think that’s why I’m still so excited about doing this job,” she says. “I hope to give long, productive service to this community which has gone out of its way to make me feel at home. I’m a hard worker. Folks will get their money’s worth.”

Energize Yourself with a Plan to Go Back to School

By buying new backpacks, clothes, shoes and school materials, the result promises a successful student. All that is needed is a new, positive perspective and perhaps a fresh credo that says, “This is my year!”

Organization and time management are one of the most important areas of student success. Reflecting on the previous year will help set the right tone; therefore, celebrate those accomplished areas, but also find tangible solutions to less effective routines. It will be a difficult confession, but all study plans are subject to change. The goal is clear.

Change will help a student succeed.

Deciding on where and how long to study; how to effectively utilize time; and where to keep assignments are all-important. Sitting in a location

other than a bedroom will encourage the student to focus on the subject matter without the interruption of ringing phones or social media websites; consequently, short breaks are needed to build focus and reenergize. How about including always reading the day’s notes and correcting quizzes? This action will increase a student’s memory and understanding of the subject material.

Studying is not a last minute “cram,” but a gradual review of the material.

Procrastination is a negative attribute, and students should try for a more positive word to describe themselves.

Middle school students can start implementing these habits now. It’s important to set the expectation early.

The transition to high school will be less worrisome if a “plan” is in place.

One problem most students have is the accessibility to a homework journal. Putting a sticky tab marker on the day’s page may be one solution to student readiness. In addition, the journal serves numerous purposes.

It can help a student remember to take home specific books, wash gym clothes, or contact a peer to discuss scheduling the next study group. By crossing off completed tasks or assignments, a student can feel positive about his or her accomplishments. If tasks lack a check mark, transfer the entry to the next day.

With the date of the open house in sight, teachers tend to load students with many supplies for just one course; therefore, be careful of the supply list. Having a three-ring binder, notebooks, and folders for each class becomes cumbersome; take the time to ask whether morning classes could share one binder. An accordion system for papers usually causes disorganization and should be avoided. For elementary and middle school students, perhaps a single folder system can eliminate lost assignments to and from school. On the left side, keep ONLY completed assignments, notes, or permission slips.

Using one folder for this purpose has proven to be effective for many students.

Big Time Tennis for Even the Smallest Fans Winston-Salem Open to Offer Several Kid-Friendly Events the Winston-Salem Open comes to town for the third year this August, all of the fun won’t just be on the courts. The Wake Forest University Tennis Complex and BB&T Field will be the place to be this year on August 17 for several youth events surrounding the WinstonSalem Open, as well as the 2013 Wake Forest Fan Fest—all taking place that day.

Sure to offer fun for fans of all ages, the WinstonSalem Open will host Chick-fil-A Kids’ Day from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the Indoor Tennis Center adjacent to BB&T Field. This will be a free event that will be open to the public and will definitely provide tennis fun for the whole family. Presented

by USTA North Carolina, Kids’ Day will offer tennis-structured games and prizes and will teach kids more about the skills and fundamentals that make up the game of tennis. Kids also will get to high-five some of their favorite mascots, including “Bo” the tennis ball, the official mascot of the Winston-Salem Open.

The SmashZone will also feature Wii tennis games, as well as a Green Screen Cover Shoot for Tennis magazine. Since it hit the road in 2011, the mobile SmashZone trailer has attracted more than 2 million people in the United States to its courts and other games and activities.

Needless to say, there will be more than enough to do on one of the last Saturdays of summer before school starts back. Be sure to bring the whole family out to enjoy all of the fun!

“Kids’ Day will be a great way to kick off the first Saturday of the Winston-Salem Open. In conjunction with the USTA North Carolina Day of Play, the 90-minute event will be fully interactive and open to all ability levels,” said Tyson Thompson, Community Program and Training Coordinator for USTA North Carolina. “Kids will try their luck at festival tennis activities, such as tennis bowling, bucket head, match play and more. It is sure to be a highly energetic atmosphere and fun time for all involved.”

Also rolling into town on Saturday, August 17, in conjunction with Wake Forest Fan Fest, will be the USTA SmashZone, a mobile attraction that provides a wide range of interactive tennis experiences for young fans attending the tournament. On tour for the third year, SmashZone features a 53foot trailer that is home to four youth-sized tennis

Marino started dancing at an early age and began teaching dance at the age of 15. Growing up in New York, she studied under such critically acclaimed teachers as Phil Black and Frank Hatchet. Along with owning her own dance studio, Marino also choreographed numbers for several groups and organizations, as well as the Professional Children’s School in New York City.

Some of her many students have gone on to become Radio City Rockettes.

Another of her students was accepted at the Joffrey Ballet School and the School of American Ballet. “We believe that although only a few go on to become professional dancers, high quality in training should be provided,” said Marino. Since moving to the area, Marino has continued working with local theatre groups choreographing dance numbers for the musical “South Pacific” and for the West Side Civic Theatre’s production of “West Side Story,” as well as Clemmons Community Theatre’s “The Fantastiks” and “Nunsense.”

For children ages three to five, Kathy Marino Dance Studios offer a pre-school and creative movement class. This class is an introduction to movement, rhythm and music. Beginning at age five through six, children are introduced to pre-ballet and tap. At this age, they are able to follow simple steps and instruction, enabling them to move forward in the discipline. The hour-long class is divided into two half-hour sessions of pre-ballet and tap. Children age seven through high school are offered classes in classical ballet, pointe, hiphop, jazz, modern, acrobatic and musical theatre. There are teen classes, workshops and an award-winning competitive hip-hop group.

The Kathy Marino Dance Studio also has classes for adults. “We offer classes in social dancing; ballroom (American and international), taught by the wonderful Tony Econ; as well as tap, ballet and jazz,” said Marino. “I am also available to work with couples for that special first wedding dance, quinceañeras, or any event where people would like to perform special dance numbers.

Moving here from New York, Marino opened her dance studio in its current location 11 years ago. Her facilities include two large, air-conditioned studios that are fitted with “sprung” hardwood floors. “Sprung” floors absorb shock, which reduces injuries and enhances performance. It is this attention to detail that makes the Kathy Marino Dance Studio special.

Something every student looks forward to is the end-of-the-year recital.

it seems like there is nothing good to watch on television, you can almost always turn to HGTV and find something interesting. There you can watch people house hunt around the world, see creative ways to renovate a home on a tight budget and see how, for some, money really can buy happiness with a healthy budget in Canada. Reynolda House Adds to Family-Friendly Programs

young artists can now master the fundamentals of art technique in an environment known for its art masterpieces. Reynolda House Museum of American Art is offering a new program for students in the 7th through 12th grades called Sketch. The program will be offered on Saturdays throughout the fall, beginning August 10. Participants can register for the series of workshops to receive a discount in registration, or register for one at a time.

“I can’t think of a better place to develop your art skills than here at Reynolda House,” says Kathleen Hutton, Education Director. “At every turn there are inspiration and models for architectural drawing, use of light, and using different media to create a work of art.”

The workshops will be led by Museum staff, and enrollment is limited to ensure individual instruction.

Students will spend time in the studios, in the galleries and in the historic house. Students will also spend time in the featured exhibition Things Wondrous & Humble: American Still Life, on view throughout the fall. Each workshop will have a distinct focus: August 10 will focus on practicing one and two-point perspective in architectural drawings; August 17 will explore three-dimensional form; September 14 students will practice drawing objects that are translucent and reflective; September 21 will explore still-life composition; October 19 will

continue still life using different media; and October 26 students will enlarge images with a projector to aid drawing.

Cost of the program is $35 per workshop, or $175 or the entire series of six. The workshops are designed to build on skills throughout the fall, so registration for the series is recommended, but not required.

Members of the Museum receive a significant discount on registration.

Sketch is the latest addition to the Museum’s familyfriendly programs and events. On the first Sunday of each month, Reynolda House offers Family First Workshops, two-hour art sessions for elementary school-aged children and an adult. Topics vary each month and range from creating origami flowers to painting and collage. Young visitors can also check out a new activity guide from the front desk when visiting with their family. General admission is always free for children under 18 with an adult, and the activity guide is included with admission.

The Museum’s popular Cinema Under the Stars series begins August 16, and features two family-friendly films: E.T. on August 23 and Back to the Future on August 30.

“There is so much for a young visitor to discover at Reynolda House, either through one of our programs or on a tour,” Hutton says. “And exploring the Museum with a child is a great way to experience Reynolda anew!”

Interventional radiologists are doctors specializing in image-guided minimally invasive treatments throughout the body. They use their expertise in imaging to place and guide various types of catheters, wires, and needles into the body, usually through a small puncture in the skin. Often the procedures are undertaken to avoid another type of therapy that is more invasive and carries a greater risk. The imaging that guides the procedures can be in various forms. Most of the time a type of X-ray or ultrasound is used.

Is interventional radiology new?

Though you may not recognize the name, interventional radiology (commonly referred to as “IR”) has been around since the mid 1970s when advances in diagnostic imaging related to fluoroscopy, CT imaging and ultrasound made certain micro invasive treatments possible.

Interventional radiologists performed the first angioplasty and delivered the first vascular stent used to treat blockages in various types of arteries. As the number and complexity of these procedures grew, the IR subspecialty was formed and is certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Interventional radiologists typically complete four years of medical school, a year of internship, four years

What are some types of procedures?

Some are catheter based. A catheter may be advanced through a puncture in the skin to a blood vessel near the groin where it is guided using continuous X-rays to the point of therapy.

The treatment site can be a long way from the entry point. Neurointerventional radiologists will guide these catheters up into the brain to perform certain therapies. Catheter based vascular procedures might consist of inserting a venous filter or dilating a narrowing in a blood vessel (angioplasty) which might include insertion of a vascular stent to help the blood vessel stay open or removing a blood clot.

Sometimes a blood vessel needs to be blocked.

Injection of special occluding materials through a catheter into a bleeding artery or tumor may be necessary. Certain cancers can be treated by injecting chemotherapy directly into the tumor.

Other cancers are ablated (killed) by inserting a special type of needle directly in the tumor and heating or freezing it. Sometimes an organ in the body becomes obstructed or infected and requires drainage. Special types of drainage catheters can be inserted through the skin into the organ or infection. Venous ports, piccs, and dialysis catheters are some of the venous catheters inserted daily in IR departments of larger hospitals.

What are some of the advantages of these procedures?

By Cecelia Marshall, Ph.D. beginning of school can sometimes seem like the start of a long and tiring race—a marathon that doesn’t end until June of next year! The race includes early mornings, homework, backpacks, lunches, after-school activities and parent teacher conferences.

All of this is, of course, added on top of the year-round daily activities of meals, baths, toothbrushing, chores, phone calls, and all the other things that make up normal family life.

Sometimes a mere 24-hour day just doesn’t seem to be enough! The most frequent complaint I hear in my office about the beginning of school is the feeling of constantly being RUSHED!!

What’s a family to do? Skipping homework or staying home from school or work, while tempting, isn’t the answer. Actually, there is no one simple answer; but a combination of small ones just might do the trick.

It starts in your head . . .

Being more calm and less rushed during the school year begins with making the commitment to do so.

Begin with the clear intention of creating moments of calm and time for each other every day. If you just wait for that time to happen, it may never come.

Then it comes out of your mouth . . .

If you want your family to have some times of calm and time to enjoy each other, it will be important to talk about it. Make the commitment as a family and get each other’s ideas on how to make it happen.

Do you need to get up earlier in the morning . . .thin out the afternoon/ evening activity schedule . . . get better organized . . . modify or redistribute chores . . . start (or re-start) a family devotional time? There are lots of ways to make it happen. Just keep in mind that “down time” rarely, if ever, happens by itself!

Put it on the calendar . . .

Whether your calendar is in your phone, on your desk, or in your head, it needs to reflect times for personal rest and reflection and family sharing and relaxing. In fact, it is a good idea to put time for self and family on your calendar

FIRST, before adding other obligations and activities.

There is a story about how Walter Cronkite, the late newsman, named his boat "On Assignment.” His calendar was said to have had regular periods which were simply noted as “On Assignment”!

You may not have a boat like Walter Cronkite on which to relax and enjoy your family; but you can have the intention . . . have the conversation . . . and put it on the calendar!

Instead of feeling like an exhausting marathon, perhaps this school year can be more like a more gentle walk or run with time to STOP and smell the roses! With a little imagination and planning, you and your family can both reach the destination AND enjoy the journey.

The View from My Section...

Parenting 101: Learning to Delegate Responsibilities know personally that parenting is hard, but after reading a story recently from one of the journalists from CNN.com on the subject, I realized I was not alone in my concern. The article, posted around Father’s Day, centered on the way many parents feel today, no doubt because of the way they were raised in (what would be considered by today’s standards) strict environments, that they must be more loose and flexible with their own children. It went on to talk about the parents’ need to convey how special their children are, and the desire to give them what they want when they want it. The result, as one might expect, is children growing up feeling they are entitled, and thus, who shouldn’t have to work for what they want in life.

It was a very interesting article and I have to admit I saw more than one glimpse of myself in his words. I, too, was a child of parents, in particular a dad, who believed in delegating responsibility at an early age. I had my usual indoor chores, which included cleaning up the kitchen after dinner (that’s right—in my house there were no gender-biased duties), along with the typical outdoor responsibilities, including mowing the lawn, raking the leaves, taking care of any exterior painting needs, as well as tending to our medium-sized garden in our backyard. I was not unlike most children today, in that I would rather have been playing with my friends during those times, as opposed to sharing in the family chores; however, unlike many children today, I didn’t fuss or talk back when asked to perform them. In my day, (yikes, I’m really starting to sound old now) you knew this was just part of growing up and something you had to do.

Now, don’t get me wrong; I had balance growing up. I played sports, went on routine family weekend getaways and vacations to the mountains, beaches and amusement parks and so forth, like any typical child in those days. I also had my mother at home during the day to care for me, teach me things, and to give me that childhood sense of comfort, knowing there was someone there if I needed them. But still… there were those pesky chores.

Unlike many children today who feel that everything they do or everywhere they go must have an entertainment value attached to it for them, I grew up liking just to do things like go to the hardware store with my dad. There was nothing in it for me except the experience. To this day, I can still remember as a pre-teen going on one particular trip with my dad to a cement producer to get a truckload of concrete blocks, which he used to make a large patio off the back of our house. And yes, I sat outside watching as my dad poured concrete and laid block to form what would initially become my

mini- basketball court, and later a prime outdoor gathering spot for family barbeques.

The point is, even though I didn’t like all those extra responsibilities, or my punishment of being grounded if I failed to follow through on them as I should, I turned out okay. As a matter of fact, I learned quite a few tips and lessons on how to do jobs that lots of children today will need to go online to determine how to do in their future. I can hear my sons now, saying, “And what’s so bad about that, Dad?” I don’t have a good argument on that one yet. It did, however, teach me that I could perform successfully many things that I didn’t want to do at the time. I learned an important lesson, that if you want to play, you first have to pay (so to speak), and the valuable concept of earning rewards. I also began to understand the delicate and essential balance of work, play and family time. All things, I might add, that have served me well in my adulthood.

Salem Academy and College: Educating Girls and Women of Character than 240 years after its founding in 1772 as a Moravian school for girls, Salem Academy and College carries on its original mission of providing women with an exceptional education.

Located on a 64-acre campus near downtown Winston-Salem, Salem is the oldest continually operating educational institution for women in the U.S. It includes Salem Academy, a private college-preparatory day and boarding school, and Salem College, a four-year liberal arts college.

After traveling more than 500 miles by foot from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to join the new Moravian community of Salem in North Carolina, the Single Sisters, as unmarried women were called, helped establish a girls’ school. The Moravians believed that girls deserved the same educational opportunities afforded to their male peers— a radical notion for the time. The first class, only three girls, was taught by Elisabeth Oesterlein.

But the school grew quickly.

The students’ lessons included math, alongside “womanly arts,” such as knitting. In 1802, Salem became a boarding school, and it began granting college degrees in the 1890s. Despite difficult times, including the Civil War, the school never closed its doors.

“Some things never change,” says Dr. Susan Pauly, President of Salem Academy and College. “That’s one reason the school is still so vital today. We have an honor code that pledges all our girls and women to academic integrity and personal civility.

The motto of the Moravian church is: ‘in essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, love.’

We hold to those founding values and encourage all girls to discover themselves in the framework of those values.”

And though times have certainly changed, Salem's dedication to educating women remains strong, and for good reason. Research shows that girls and women thrive in an all-female environment. Graduates from these schools feel better prepared for college, graduate school, or professional leadership, and there’s also evidence that they are more likely to enter male-dominated fields like math and science. Alumnae from women’s colleges make up 30 percent of Business Week’s list of rising stars in corporate America, 33 percent of female board members of Fortune 1000 companies, and 20 percent of women in Congress.

Those numbers come as no surprise to Pauly.

“At a women’s institution like Salem, every single leadership position is held by a woman,” she says. “They get so much practice that when they leave they are used to taking the lead.”

With an enrollment of roughly 155 students, Salem Academy offers a world-class education to girls in grades nine through 12. Small class sizes and a student-teacher ratio of 7 to 1 creates the kind of environment in which girls excel — the school has a 100-percent college admission rate for graduates, and AP Exam scores regularly beat national and statewide averages.

The unique, three-week January Term also offers students a chance to explore subjects not covered in the regular semester—such as photography and money skills—participate in internships or travel the globe via educational excursions.

Extracurricular activities range from student

government to Glee Club and athletic teams, and give girls the chance to try new things and assert themselves in leadership positions.

“Contemporary culture constantly puts pressure on teenagers and young women,” says Salem Academy Head of School Karl Sjolund. “It tells them that if they don’t look or act a certain way, then they are somehow flawed. At a place like Salem, girls have the freedom to become exactly who they were created to be.”

Recognized as one of the nation’s top schools, Salem College was named to Forbes’s list of “America’s Best College Buys” and was listed among USA Today College’s “10 Groundbreaking Women’s Colleges.”

One reason for those accolades is the Salem Signature Program—a four-year curriculum focusing on interdisciplinary thinking and experiential learning. Students are required to participate in off-campus internships and community service, awakening their intellectual curiosity and preparing them for life after graduation.

“It’s so important to be innovative, creative and global in our academics, because the career opportunities for women have just exploded,” says Pauly. “Our graduates are likely to have more than one career in their lifetime.”

is a song that says, “The first step is the one you believe in, but the second might be profound.” That is exactly how Miranda Lobs, owner of Pro Dance Academy, has felt about the past year.

Recently, Nik Wallenda walked across the Grand Canyon on a tight rope without a tether. He was incredibly confident in his ability to be successful and took his first step with conviction. Very quickly into his journey he turned his confidence in his own ability into his reliance on God’s provision for him, much like the initial year with Pro Dance Academy for Miranda.

The vision of Pro Dance Academy came out of her lifelong dream. She took her first steps to implement that dream out of her confidence in her own abilities to make it a success. However, Pro Dance has already developed far beyond anything she could have dreamed. “I might have taken the first step because of what I believed in, but God’s work in the studio has made every step after that profound,” said Miranda. “This past year for Pro Dance Academy has been both invigorating, inspiring and, most of all, humbling.”

In the classes at Pro Dance Academy, many of the students were in their first year of dance training. Many of them have since discovered a passion for dance they had no idea existed. The students who came to Pro Dance with previous dance training have also seen an incredible progression in their talents and passion for the art form.

“These children have become such a part of who we are, and everyone on staff feels like proud parents watching them grow into themselves and build their confidence,” said Miranda. “Ultimately, that is what’s important to us at Pro Dance Academy. We are here to use our expertise in dance to inspire confidence in our students and help them cultivate their own love for dance. The staff at Pro Dance has a huge role in the success of translating the studio’s vision; not only do we have an incredibly tight-knit and positive staff, but they all truly love what they do. They invest in our students and put 150% into each and every one of them. I am blessed beyond measure to have them in the studio.”

Pro Dance recently celebrated its first anniversary with a dance recital. “I kept thinking that a ball was going to drop

at any minute because it was running eerily smooth,” said Miranda. “However, as someone made sure to mention to me after the show, “It was apparent God had his hands in the event from its seamless transitions, to the fun the children were having and the amazing dedication of the backstage moms.”

In addition to dance classes, Pro Dance is very excited about the success of the birthday parties and Parents’ Night Outs during the first year. “We realized very quickly that Parents’ Night Outs should really be called Kids’ Night Outs,” said Miranda. “The kids always had a blast and some even cried when they had to go home. They thought it was their party at the studio! We will have to provide more Kids’ Night Outs next year; we did not anticipate them being such a needed event for both parents and children. The birthday parties have been just as much fun for the staff at Pro Dance as for the birthday children. They have three themes for parties: a Princess Ball, Rockstar Diva and Dancing in the Dark. The children usually attend dressed up according to the theme, and we provide a dance party, decked out with disco balls, flashing lights and themed props. The Dancing in the Dark theme is usually on a Friday or Saturday night and geared toward tweens who want to continue the party with a sleepover back at their own homes.”

Pro Dance Academy is already making fun plans for the second year! “We have recently formed a

competition team called the Academy,” said Miranda.

“We already have about 20 talented young ladies who are excited to take their dancing to the next level. We are thrilled to help them achieve their dreams in dance. It is so wonderful to see the same passion for dance we all had at their age in them now. We have also expanded our schedule to include a second allboys’ hip-hop class and an all-boys’ clogging class.

We have a large boy group in the studio, and we felt a need for more boys’ classes this coming year. As a mom of two boys, I absolutely love that we can provide all-boys’ dance classes, where they can come to class and feel free to learn dance without a stigma that “boys don’t dance.” Seeing them love dance makes it apparent that we are building up these children through dance and helping them feel good about themselves.”

We are a community of life-long learners, both students and staff. Our dedicated staff addresses each child as an individual and is invested in each student’s success. We can all name the teachers we have had that made impressions on us, whether negative or positive. Some teachers are easy to forget, and others stick with us for the rest of our lives as ones who helped to mould the adults we grew up to be. It is no doubt that one of these teachers for a select number of students at Kernersville Elementary School will be Patty Dewitt, named as this year’s Teacher of the Year for Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools.

“I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember,” said Dewitt. “I grew up the youngest of five girls on a small farm in Indiana. My sister and I played school, and I always liked school. When I went to college, there were too many teaching majors, so I earned a degree in my second choice, social work. However, when I moved back to North Carolina about 30 years ago, my life led me back to teaching. I was a teacher and director at Main Street United Methodist Church’s preschool, before I decided to go back to school for my teaching license.”

After earning her license, Dewitt dove right in to the teaching world full-time. “I began at Piney Grove, and after one year I went to Kernersville,” said Dewitt. “There was not a classroom position

Teaching has changed quite a bit since Patty Dewitt began, but part of what makes a great teacher is his or her ability to adapt to new environments and new challenges. “This is not the same teaching profession of a few years ago,” said Dewitt. “Our culture has changed, expectations have increased and resources are stretched. Therefore, we should be focused, current with expectations and research, and dedicated to our profession. Teaching is a unique profession that I believe is a 24/7 career. I have to keep my eye on each child and his or her learning. I want to form a relationship with each student that lasts long past this year, and I want each student to grow, learn and believe in themselves.”

Dewitt’s immense dedication is obvious to those who know her, as well as those who voted for her as this year’s Teacher of the Year. “I've never thought of myself as being special,” said Dewitt. “I feel so honored to be selected. I have been fortunate to work with some great people. Mary Mullinax at Main Street is still in my heart and mind as I teach. The staff at Kernersville works very hard. Amy Hicks, a 1st-grade colleague, has inspired me to be my best. I have other colleagues who set the bar, support me and challenge me to be a better teacher. Although we are usually alone in our classroom with our students, it is truly a school staff working together that makes me effective.”

Hospice Healing Build Using Grief to Help Others

death of a loved one and the grief that comes with it often destroys dreams—dreams of what could have been, dreams of what should have been. Grief often destroys hope, as well. The Hospice Healing Build, a new and meaningful partnership between two local non-profit organizations, Habitat for Humanity and Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, seeks to help bereaved members of our community rebuild hope by providing active and meaningful ways to process grief. “We tend to think of grief as only an

These were then loaded onto a tractor trailer, where they’ll be stored and then transported to the build site for the Jimmy Johnson Memorial Labor of Love Blitz, which takes place August 28–31, 2013. “The Wall Build was memorable and meaningful and is just the beginning of an amazing

emotional experience—but grief also affects us physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually. We believe that the Hospice Healing Build provides so many rich opportunities to engage with these aspects of grief—and to move closer to healing,” shared Donna Hampton, HPCC’s Director, Grief & Bereavement Services.

The Hospice Healing Build is also about building new dreams—the dream of home ownership for the family who will receive this home. Home ownership improves a family’s quality of life by reducing their housing and utility costs and by contributing to long-term financial stability. The new homeowners contribute to the property tax base and add to the stability and family-oriented character of a neighborhood. Owning a home also has positive, far-reaching effects on a family’s children.

“This really is the perfect joining of two groups,” comments Sylvia Oberle, Habitat’s Executive Director. “Habitat has seen that when houses are built by family and friends in memory of individuals, this becomes a special time of healing. As a result of this partnership, we will build a safe, affordable home for a Habitat family in our community—a demonstration of ‘hope for the future’ for all involved.”

Oberle—herself a bereaved parent—has experienced first-hand the power of Habitat as a healing agent. Just months before she started at Habitat, Oberle’s 21-year-old son, Andrew, was killed in a car accident while away at college.

“Habitat was a gift of grace for me. In its uplifting moments, and in the very tangible acts of building houses and working with families, I have discovered a renewed sense of purpose in life, something of meaning beyond just my sorrow and grief. This is what I hope other bereaved parents and family members can discover.”

“Grief forces us out of our comfort zones—and the thought of building a house is certainly outside of many of our comfort zones,” shared Donna.

“However, the 25 people present at the Wall Build—many of us first-time volunteers who may have never hammered a nail—are proof that, together, we CAN do this. We can confront our pain, sorrow, and fears—and in the process, we can make a dream come true for the family who will receive this Habitat House.”

“When I showed up at the Wall Build, the Habitat folks welcomed me immediately. They could easily see the outside—but not the inside,” shared a bereaved father who volunteered at the Build. “There was initially a feeling of discomfort. It was easy to navigate toward the few I knew, but I found myself on my own island and feeling uncertain as to how this day would play out…like many of my days dealing with grief. I met other dads who had also lost their sons. Throughout the day there was an unspoken bond, because we were in the same place.

I had done Habitat builds before, but this one was different. As we assembled and constructed the walls, my purpose grew. As an architect and contractor, this was a part of what I deal with most days. I quickly realized, though, that it wasn’t only about building the walls for this family; it was also about rebuilding my own life. I found myself moving from ‘How fast can we build them?’ to ‘How can I help others in completing the walls?’ Grief changes how you look at life—a new way of seeing what has always been in front of you.”

Construction on the Hospice Healing Build will extend 10–12 weeks after the Blitz, with building scheduled Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, and the dedication of the home planned before the end of the year.

The Community Garden in East Winston

a neighborhood garden is an inspirational grassroots movement among church communities. It unites people together in surprising ways. For Alpha and Omega Church, the vision of a sustainable two-acre garden required planning, land, and the effort of many stewards beyond the community of East Winston.

Through the direction of Bishop John Huntley and his wife Deloris, the goal expands beyond feeding the community. It serves as an educational tool to teach the important values of nutrition and health, food preparation, and canning and storage.

Planting

The story of the “Loaves and Fishes” has a correlation to East Winston.

The community had a need, and the church provided an answer in exponential ways. The garden has encouraged people who normally may not leave their home to walk, socialize, and choose to be part of the planting, weeding, and harvesting process. With so many crippled by the effects of diabetes, the goal is to improve the health and the spirit of God’s people. Bishop John shares, “East Winston is a ‘Food Desert.’ When you look around, the people don’t even have an apple. We have offered 10% of our harvest to the Rebecca Store; so, many of our people could buy fruits and vegetables at a discount.”

To promote healthy eating, community members gather to learn how to be effective gardeners and good stewards of healthy plants. With time and continuous education, adults and children will learn the economic value of food and have the ability to choose a fruit or vegetable over processed foods. Once the harvest has been collected, the bounty will be discussed before it is distributed. Pairing likely vegetables together and food demonstrations are two distinct goals; therefore, families will return home with the knowledge of how to best utilize the harvest. From a health standpoint, an herb garden was essential to show the community the value of seasoning versus relying on salt. Whether fresh or dried, leaf or stem, herbs will encourage a change in diet.

Seeing it firsthand, families understand the value of the parish’s food pantry. To help the community create their own storage of frozen and canned goods, a representative came to assist them.

Many adults can look into their cupboards and not know that four cans of vegetables can feed ten people. With winter on its way, members will also learn how to properly can their garden goods and preserve fresh fruits.

Community members love seeing children of all ages participate in planting, watering and weeding the garden. As an integral part of the process, the children need to become invested in the lifestyle changes and nutritional goals of the whole community; therefore, for eight weeks this summer, Alpha Omega Church will offer a Summer Youth Academy camp for six- to twelve-year-olds. Topics for the half-day program include academics, character building, and the value of food and nutrition. In conjunction with the mission of the church, a mentoring program through Latch Key has established a “Healthy Eating, Healthy Living” initiative. Youths ranging from 12 to 17 gain insightful information applicable to their garden. Reaching out to nearby schools, the church has established a program through Ashley Elementary and Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy. Bishop John shares, “The children need to be educated about food and know it doesn’t come from Food Lion. Our five-, six-, and seven-year olds are amazing. We ask the children to name fruits and vegetables and they think everything is a tomato. We have lost touch with the earth. This is a way to educate and keep it going. Then, everyone can prosper and share.”

After retirement, Bishop John assumed he would play golf; instead, the Lord had another plan. This garden is a legacy. By teaching the importance of gardening and community, the work will sustain East Winston for generations. There are wonderful goals for the remaining available land. Bishop John envisions blueberries and fruit trees, raised beds specifically for the children, and a wheel-chair access for those who desire the opportunity to participate. While there are many outside volunteers, Alpha Omega Church is grateful for anyone who wishes to assist in their endeavor. Seeds and Mason jars are just a few items that are needed. Voices Speak Volumes: 2013 BOOKMARKS Festival of Books & Authors

Both familiar and emerging authors’ voices will be heard at BOOKMARKS’ ninth annual free Festival of Books and Authors on Saturday, September 7.

Authors reach readers through their distinctive voices, conveyed in individual literary styles.

Through craft, they adopt a point of view, decide scope, deliver dialogue, devise description and develop characters. Voice is integral, regardless of genre or topic.

Readings, panel discussions, writing and illustration workshops, storytelling and book signings will take place in tented and indoor venues in Winston-Salem’s Downtown Arts District. Reading-related exhibitors and food vendors add to the mix, as do local businesses, art galleries and restaurants.

Wind Dancer Foal Rescue A Sanctuary for Hope and New Beginnings

is nothing more vulnerable than a new-born horse. The mental picture of the wobbly little legs trying to stand, as an attentive mother looks on, gently nudging the foal to take its first steps. Now imagine the foal being taken away, in many cases immediately, from the warmth and comfort of a mother’s love, never to see her again. Such is the case of foals who are born to mares being used as nurse mares, bred for the sole purpose that when they come into milk they can be leased to feed high-dollar foals for a profit to the farms, Then the “lesser valued” foals are orphaned, neglected, starved and, in many cases, destroyed.

When the plight of many foals came to the attention of Sharon Lanouette, owner/instructor of Sharon’s School of Dance of WinstonSalem, NC, and horse lover, needless to say, she was very upset, and decided to foster and care for one foal and get it to the point where she could have someone adopt it. “I don’t claim to be the savior of all horses; we just want to do everything possible to give the foals a chance. My goal is to raise one a year, but it is a very, very expensive undertaking, so now my group, Wind Dancer Foal Rescue, is an incorporated nonprofit and we are fostering 8 foals for this season at Ogburn Stables in Tobaccoville, NC, where I board my adult horse,” said Sharon.

Horses and Women–An Unexplainable Bond Any little girl who has ever spent time with a horse, while learning to ride and care for it, understands the bond that develops between the two. “As little girls, we watch great horse movies and see the relationship that happens as the horse and girl grow together. When you raise a foal from a few days old as its only source of love and nourishment, you will never have a bond like this with any other horse in your life. This truly is a real-life horse love affair!” Sharon stated.

The journey of the foal to Ogburn Stables begins with a devoted rescue group in Ohio.

The Journey to a Life Never Dreamed “There is a great organization in Ohio that does the hardest work. They rescue the foals from bad conditions, and then I go get them and foster the foals until they are ready to be adopted. When we get the foals, they are usually about a week old, very weak and sometimes depressed 48 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

after being taken from their mothers.

They are still drinking milk.

The foals, because of the amount of care they need, take a lot of time and commitment, but the rewards are so worth the work,” commented Sharon. But what if someone wants to help, but doesn’t have the time needed to invest in caring for a foal…

“People can sponsor or adopt a foal and we will do all the work. The expenses for a foal are board, milk replacer, hay, medicine, etc. Foals can be sponsored for $350 a month and the adoption/take home fee is $300–$500. We train the foals to lead, tie, bathe, pick up their feet and get them off milk and on grain before they go to their new home.

Adopting a foal gives you the experience of coming out to visit, play and bond with the foal any time you can. It’s sort of like being a grandparent, you get to spoil and love on the baby, but there’s someone else to clean the diapers!” Sharon said.

The foals that Sharon has taken in are very fortunate to have a facility like Ogburn Stables at which to grow. “David and Vicky Ogburn have been very excited to be involved and are a great support to the work we are doing. Jeremy May, the Trainer at Ogburn Stables, has been helpful with the many questions I have every day, as has our veterinarian, Vicky Newell. This has become a wonderful group effort for me, and I can never thank enough the students at my dance studio who helped me start the fund-raising process. Savannah Adams, Alberta Seabright, Hannah Goulding, Moriah Burner, Hannah Seabright and Chandalae Lanouette have been instrumental in our efforts.

One thing I have learned in this process is that we may think we are rescuing the horses, but it is the foals that rescue us,” commented Sharon.

Managing Disappointments in Youth Sports

By A. Keith Tilley face it—we all want our children to do well when participating in their youth sports leagues, but sometimes it doesn’t always work out that way. Since our children are too involved in the moment to know just the right way to deal with disappointment, it’s our job as parents to help them learn to handle the situation in the most appropriate manner. Knowing exactly how to go about it isn’t always easy, so here is some practical advice from a seasoned Little League coach that may help.

The Value of Failing First off, it’s important to realize that sometimes our children can learn much more through failure than through actual success. For one, failing or losing can be a character builder, teaching children to be respectful of others’ achievements and not to attach their own self-worth to their success or failure. Of course, for young people whose minds are not developed enough yet to understand such things, parents can make a huge difference in their children’s lives and future by reassuring them that they’re proud of them, regardless of whether they win or lose, play well or not, as long as they gave it their very best. NFL Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi Jr. said, “The greatest accomplishment isn’t in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.”

When the Parents are the Problem In some situations the negative results may indicate that the child is not as strong in that specific activity.

It doesn’t mean he or she can’t still participate as long as they keep the proper attitude toward the sport and their peers. Oftentimes, in these situations, it’s the kids who know the right thing to do and the parents who get in the way. Parents may feel pressured to push their children too hard, resulting in more negative attitudes displayed both on the field and off. When this happens, it’s imperative for parents to take a step back and realize what is really most important, and understand the powerful impact they can have, positively or negatively, on their child in that moment. It’s more vital for children to enjoy the activity, learn the value of being part of a team and how to interact well with their peers on both sides, regardless of the outcome. These are strong character traits they will use in whatever endeavor they pursue in their future.

Modeling Proper Behavior A very important rule to live by when it comes to youth sports is for parents not to speak badly about the coaches, the officials, or even the opponents, as this behavior gets repeated by the children as well. Our children watch us as parents and tend to model the same behavior. Most often youth recreation leagues are coached and refereed by volunteers who are trying to provide the best experience for the children. They deserve the utmost respect and admiration for their role in creating a positive environment for your child. This is not to say there are not those rare occurrences when personalities clash, or the coach is simply not the best fit for your child. It’s important that you and your child feel comfortable with the coach’s style in order for the experience to be all that it can be. Therefore, in those circumstances, if you’re not comfortable, you may simply request a change to the League Director. Most often, they are more than happy to make a change if they feel it’s in the best interest of the child.

Scott Wollaston, Executive Director of Twin City Youth Soccer Association, offers this advice as well for parents. “As youth sports coaches, we have to make very difficult decisions; especially during the ‘Tryout Season’ that we know will be disappointing for a player and parent. Although we are being fair in our evaluation process, some parents deal with their child’s disappointment at not earning a spot on a certain team by blaming the coaches, evaluators and club for a poor decision. We truly empathize with the parents and know it has to be hard to see their child disappointed. However, it can be used either as a great opportunity for the child to overcome adversity, or an unfortunate opportunity to learn how to make excuses when things don't go their way. We see kids that come back the next year with more determination than ever, because their parents helped them work through the disappointment properly.”

The Rewards of Participating Over Just Winning It’s only natural when you routinely take your child to practice each week and show your loyal support to the team to want to see them win on game day. The problem arises when winning becomes everything. Everyone wants to win, but unfortunately, there can be only one winner. If we as parents display this “win at all costs” attitude, we deprive our children of the joy of simply playing the game. We make it more of an obstacle for them to overcome than the entertaining and character-building activity it’s intended to be. Winning should be the icing on the cake, not the cake itself. We should just let them play; let them enjoy life as a child a little longer without adding the pressures and stresses put on them by adults who should know better. Parents will benefit themselves and their children more by realizing and accepting their role as facilitator, motivator, chief inspirator, and most of all, their child’s biggest fan—win or lose.

Ages & Stages Tips for the Transition from Summer to School Year

Late mornings and days spent relaxing at the area pool will soon be replaced with early mornings, rushing to get out the door in time for school. This can prove to be a daunting challenge for both parent and child. Worried about this upcoming schedule change? Stop the stress with a few tips from Forsyth Family.

We have gathered tips and tricks to help the entire family conquer the back-to-school transition.

Transition Tip #1: Good physical and mental health. Back to school is the perfect time to schedule doctor and dental checkups. Discuss any concerns over your child’s emotional or psychological development

Transition Tip#2: Establish earlier bedtime and mealtime routines. Make a conscious effort to re-establish the bedtime and mealtime routines at least 1 to 2 weeks before the start of school. It is especially important when dealing with breakfast, so that the morning routine doesn’t overwhelm the entire family.

Transition Tip #3: Review all school information. It is very important to read all material sent by the school as soon as it arrives.

Important information about your child’s teacher, room number, school supply requirements and sign-ups for after-school sports and activities are included in these packets. School calendar dates, bus transportation, health and emergency forms, and volunteer opportunities are also listed.

Help your child by being prepared for what to expect for the upcoming school year.

Transition Tip #4: Turn off the TV. One enjoyable aspect of summer for children is watching movies and TV shows late into the night. While fun, this activity needs to cease at least one week prior to school beginning.

Incorporate reading into the nightly routine. Cut down on television time and have children journal. Both of these activities stimulate the mind and will aid in getting children ready for back-to-school.

Transition Tip #5: Make note of your children’s closet needs. It’s important to note what your child needs regarding school clothing and supplies prior to the first week. Have your children help you with this process through cleaning out their closet(s) together. Make a list of needs/wants with the child and begin building the excitement of going back to school with a trip to the area mall!

Daryl’s parents took him to his doctor, and he was prescribed medications to treat his ADD. The medications helped to treat the condition, but also made Daryl very tired and zombie-like. This frustrated Daryl even more, because he enjoyed playing sports, and he had no energy to play. Daryl’s parents were even more frustrated with the medications. He was no longer a funny, energetic child; so because of the side effects, Daryl’s mother continued to search for a better answer to her child’s condition. She decided to attend an educational seminar for a new treatment at BrainCore Therapy.

This therapy is a computer-based program that helps balance out the patient’s brain waves and is known as Neurofeedback. Like many parents, Daryl’s were skeptical. They were used to going to the doctor to receive a medication for the symptoms and were not sure how a computer-based program could change ADD permanently when the medications failed. They attended the lecture, where they learned how brain waves control how the body works. There are two brain waves in particular, theta waves and beta waves, which control our attention span. Beta waves are the brain waves that allow a person to focus, and theta waves are brain waves that distract us. These two brain waves should be in a two-to-one ratio of theta waves to beta waves. When this ratio is out of balance, a

person is unable to focus and exhibits symptoms of ADD/ADHD. After sitting through the seminar, Daryl’s parents signed him up for an EEG, which shows the patient’s brain activity. This test is non-invasive, which means there is absolutely no pain to the patient, and Daryl loved that! The EEG revealed that Daryl had a brain imbalance where his theta/beta ratio was 25 to one. This is the reason Daryl could not focus, no matter how hard he tried. Daryl’s parents agreed to the customized treatment plan, and Daryl began his BrainCore therapy. As Daryl progressed through his treatments, BrainCore worked with his pediatrician to eliminate the ADD medications. Daryl worked hard during his treatment sessions, and soon everyone noticed positive changes in his mood, attitude and schoolwork.

Daryl and his family returned to the BrainCore clinic about one month after finishing the treatment program with huge smiles on their faces. Daryl was holding his report card, which showed he made the A-B Honor Roll!

Show them that bullying is taken seriously. Be firm and consistent with your discipline, but never use a physical form of discipline.

Coping with the Bullying Epidemic hear tragic stories about bullying in the news all of the time.

As parents, we fear that our child might be the victim of this unwanted aggressive behavior. We also don’t want to be the parents of a child who bullies others. With the school year nearly upon us, now is a great time to help our children understand bullying, so they can better deal with it when they encounter it—as victims, bystanders, or bullies themselves.

We

Bullying between children, whether it’s physical, verbal, or social, involves a real or perceived power imbalance. It can happen at school, on the playground, on the school bus, in the neighborhood, or over the Internet. Our role is to support all of the children involved to ensure the behavior doesn’t continue and its effects are minimized.

When Your Child is Being Bullied: Listen and focus on the child. Assure them that it is not their fault.

Remember that it may be difficult for them to talk about it and consider referring them to a psychologist or school counselor.

Give advice about what to do. Help your child learn how to respond if it happens again. For example, teach them how to look the bully in the eye, use a firm voice, walk away, and how to ask for help.

Encourage them to get involved. Making friends and participating in activities and interests will give them confidence and provide support.

Work to resolve the situation and ensure the safety of the child. Make sure school officials are aware of the bullying, and work with them on solutions. Have an adult who knows about the bullying be present to ensure your child’s safety when you cannot be there.

Be persistent. Even if your child isn’t ready to talk about it, consistently showing that you’re available to listen to his or her problems will mean a great deal to them.

When Your Child is the Bully: Make sure they know bullying is never OK. Help them understand what the problem behavior is.

Be a positive role model. Use respectful behavior when addressing the problem. Show children how to get what they want without teasing, threatening, or hurting someone.

Work with them to try and understand why he or she bullied. Some kids bully to fit in, some are reacting to another stressor in their lives. Often involving them in sports or other activities can be helpful. Some may need to be referred to a mental health provider for further support.

When Your Child Is a Bystander: Encourage them to be a good friend. Simple gestures such as talking to the person who is being bullied, sitting with them at lunch, involving them in games at recess, or sending them an encouraging text can let them know they are not alone.

Make sure they tell a trusted adult. Encourage them to talk with as many adults as possible, so that they can intervene and try to prevent the bullying situations.

Have them help provide an “out.” Try to create a distraction, or have the person being bullied come join their game, or have them announce that a teacher needs to see that person “right away.”

Teach your child to lead by example. Help them understand how important it is to never bully others and to not give bullying an audience. Instead of laughing or supporting the bully’s actions, encourage your child to speak up and tell them that they do not find them funny or entertaining.

With the right guidance and support, our kids can learn to navigate this challenging issue that’s a harsh reality for too many children. If you’re unsure about what to do if you believe your child is being bullied, talk with your family’s pediatrician, a counselor or administrators at your child’s school. All of these professionals are equipped to help you help your child, regardless of what their role may be in the bullying cycle. This is a problem we solve one child at a time!

Hebrews 10:19-22 (NIV) I’ve noticed in some of the more crime-ridden sections of Guatemala, many of the small tiendas, or corner stores, have strong, iron bars at the entrance. Instead of walking into the store to get what you want, you have to stand at the bars, tell the store keeper what you want and then pay for your purchases through the bars.

I’m not sure I could get used to that kind of shopping. I like to use all of my senses when I shop.

I want to touch the different bottles of soda in the refrigerator to make sure the one I get is cold, to smell the different brands of shampoo, to look at the expiration dates on the milk cartons, etc. Not being able to actually go into the store to do these things would, I think, take the fun out of shopping for me.

I wonder how many of us are stuck in a relationship with God that resembles shopping at a store that you can’t actually enter. You consider yourself unworthy of His love, so you stand outside of God’s presence and ask for what you want with trepidation through a closely guarded opening in your heart. You might end up with what you asked for, but you don’t walk away from the exchange any closer to God because, under these constraints, you’ve had no real experience with him. You have not touched or felt His presence.

Friend, this is so far shy of the relationship that God is pursuing with you. Thanks to the free gift of grace offered to us through Jesus, you have direct access straight into the Lord’s heart. You are invited into a loving, communal relationship with Him, a relationship where we can actually experience God’s love and tenderness each day. All you have to do is accept the gift.

Haggai 1:3-11 (NIV) 3 Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” 5 Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill.

You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” 7 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD. 9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the LORD Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11 I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the oil and whatever the ground produces, on men and cattle, and on the labor of your hands.” saw a sign that struck me odd the other day—it was a sign showing the traffic circle that was quickly approaching. It was showing how many different directions exit off of the traffic circle or, if the driver so chooses, that one can just drive endlessly around the circle. I believe in other parts of the world, traffic circles are referred to as roundabouts. That name seems apt to describe them, as well.

I

But it also seems apt about how we live life. We are traveling along on life's highway and we realize that we need to make a decision, change course, go off in a different direction. Some of us do just that, we start off in a direction that is a little different than the direction we are going, others do a 180º, while others just seem to wander around and around without any guidance whatsoever.

In the passage above, God, through the prophet Haggai, was telling them that they needed to change their course, because they were headed for destruction. The course they were on was one where they were concerned only about themselves and were failing to remember God. God was calling them to turn around before it was too late.

I wonder, how many of us is God calling on to turn around? I am sure that some of us need to deviate only a slight bit to be back on the course that God created for us, while others need to make a big U-Turn, that 180º, to bring us back to a fellowship with God. Still others need to get out of the roundabout, stop wandering aimlessly around, enjoying the same old sights.

By God’s grace, we have free will. By God’s mercy, we have the ability to change our course and follow God.

education, Meme set out to start her college career with a personal assistant…her dad. “Thirty some years ago the Lord knew that I would need to care for my ‘baby girl’ and put things into motion that I would retire and be able to be with Meme just when she needed me. I was able to leave home and ‘go back to college’ caring for Meme every day. Trips to the hospital continued as Meme went on with her LIFE; she never stopped enjoying life nor did she ever question ‘why me’ or become bitter. Eventually Meme transferred to ASU to study nursing because she wanted to be able to help others as she had been helped by her physicians, Dr. Samuel Lentz, Dr. Amy Worley as well as the many nurses and staff at WFUBMC. Meme believed that God would provide and He did and He continues to do so,” David commented. On October 15, 2012 at the age of 21, just shy of turning 22, God provided Meme a place in heaven as she left this earth. Since then her family and friends continue to thank God that Meme was part of

A Battle Fought with Faith and Family

the age of 18, Meme Mckensie Brown had her whole life ahead of her. She was an excellent student and athlete at Starmount High School, in Boonville, NC, participating in volleyball, basketball and track/field, living life to its fullest, while loving those around her, especially her parents, Sharon and David Brown and big brother, Tyler, whom Meme affectionately called ‘Brother’. With her active schedule at school and at the church she dearly loved, Boonville Baptist, Meme’s LIFE really couldn’t get any better. “In April of Meme’s senior year of high school her life was derailed. After she told me that she didn’t feel right, it was found that she had a ‘mass’ in her abdomen, determined to be the size of a basketball. Meme was diagnosed with Sertoli-Leydig-cell tumor of the ovary, an extremely rare cancer. Although the initial results indicated that the mass was not cancerous, in December of the same year, Meme had surgery for another mass and this one was malignant,” recalled Sharon Brown. Thus became Meme’s life for the next 3 years; in and out of the hospital with surgeries and chemotherapy, with her mother, father and ‘Brother’ by her side. Each time it was believed that the chemo had been effective, only to have the cancer return. But Meme’s story is not about the battle, but the grace of one special young woman facing some insurmountable circumstances.

To raise money for the fund, Sanders Ridge Winery, owned by Meme’s uncle, Neil Shore, will host Fight Like a Girl Girls Night Out on September 8th, 2013. The cost is $50 per person and the evening will include a wonderful meal, special events throughout the night including our special guest speaker, Dr. Amy Worley, who cared for Meme. Since September is ‘Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month’, we thought there would be no better time to draw attention to this terrible disease” said Mariena Shore, Meme’s aunt and organizer of the event.

Meme’s family continues to miss her every day, but believe in the promises of their faith. “People may say that ‘Meme left us much too young,’ but anytime a parent has to bury their child is too young. It is only with the assurance that Meme believed in Christ and He has given her a crown through Grace. Now it is mine, Sharon’s and Brother’s responsibility to maintain an earthly life that others may see the strength that is only possible through Faith for such trying times. We now look forward to our reunion someday. Meme is already there!” David stated.

Delivering God’s Love a World Away

a shoe box around Christmas time with items like pencils, toothpaste and small toys for children on the other side of the world has become a tradition for many families in our community through Operation Christmas Child (OCC). Most people will never see a child’s eyes light up as the shoebox is placed in their hands, but Operation Christmas Child volunteer Cindy Miller of Winston-Salem, NC, had the opportunity to do just that on a recent trip to Zambia, Africa.

A Long and Rewarding Journey Traveling to Africa is not for the faint of heart; it takes a long time to arrive at your destination, but the rewards for the OCC and Samaritan’s Purse volunteers far outweighed the distance from their families or any inconvenience that came with the trip. “Seeing the whole process from beginning to end, making the shoeboxes, like I did with my family, and then delivering the shoeboxes is so touching. This is the 20th year of OCC, and we gave out the 100-millionth shoebox last December, yet there are still so many children who need a shoebox and to hear the word of God. The children we saw in Zambia have nothing and live in primitive shelters. It is estimated that over 600,000 children in Zambia are orphans, yet they are so open to meeting new people and sharing what they do have,” recalled Cindy Miller.

During her trip, Cindy was reminded of just how small the world can be when she saw a little piece of home in this faraway land.

“One day our group visited a hospital where children come to get their medications for HIV/AIDS treatment. We were giving out shoeboxes to the children who were there, and a 17-year-old boy, a local Sunday school teacher, who had brought his sister to the hospital, walked up wearing a T-shirt with “High Point University” written on it. He had gotten it from a previous shoebox given to his sister. It was nice seeing a little piece of home and talking to him about how I live only a half-hour’s drive away from HPU. The children loved to get their pictures taken with us and then see what they look like, since many of them don’t have mirrors. We have so many material blessings here, and they have nothing compared to us in that sense; they have minimal school supplies, no toiletries and they were so excited to get a bar of soap,” commented Cindy.

In the months to come, Cindy knows that the shoeboxes will fade away, will break or be used up, but the true mission of OCC will continue on…

“God’s gift of love and hope is eternal, and the churches in the areas we visited will continue the work that was started with a single shoebox,” Cindy said.

For Cindy and her fellow volunteers, one of the greatest blessings was the unexpected gifts from the children in the last two villages the group visited. “After I handed a little girl a shoebox, she came back to me and handed me a squash and bowed to say ‘Thank you.’ It made me tear up because these children have nothing, and yet they gave all they had.

Other children brought peanuts, dried beans and more squash. It was overwhelming and unexpected. They reminded me of the Bible story of

Dog Heaven

few years ago, my husband and I made the heartbreaking decision to put down our family dog, Sheba, who had been a constant in our lives for 12 years. When the end was near we prepared the kids little-by-little, telling them Sheba will probably have to go to Heaven soon. They didn’t fully understand, and when I told my daughter we were taking Sheba to the doctor soon so he could send her to Heaven, she replied, “Mommy, the doctor can’t push Sheba back into Heaven.”

My biggest concern was for my four-year-old son, who incessantly hugged, kissed and played with Sheba. Surprisingly, he was OK. My six-year-old daughter, on the other hand, was a wreck. Every little thing that reminded her of Sheba made her upset. Not seeing Sheba when she got home from school. Not having to tell Sheba to “go lie down” when we were eating dinner.

I think it was the finality of “death” that caused most of my daughter’s tears. Knowing she will never see Sheba again, or trying to understand why Sheba couldn’t come back, was just too much to grasp.

For comfort, we continued to communicate how happy Sheba was in Heaven, and what a wonderful and beautiful a place it is.

But the questions kept coming—and not just about Sheba—but also about relatives who passed. Are they with Sheba? Will Sheba know them? Do they all live together? Will Sheba be able to run in Heaven since she couldn’t run as an old dog? Will she still sleep a lot in Heaven? Can she see us?

Finding a way to answer these questions was not easy. Knowing our struggles, a friend of mine suggested the children’s book, Dog Heaven, by Cynthia Rylant. My friend’s family had also recently lost their dog and grappled with the same questions from her sons. I had not even thought to seek out a children’s book to help us mourn, yet it offered the perfect answer to all of my children’s questions.

The illustrations are colorful and playful, and the author uses simple, comforting words. She even adds humor to her description of “Dog Heaven” saying how there are fields for the dogs run in, cat-shaped biscuits, many petting hands, cozy spots to sleep, and memories of favorite spots and people.

If you are currently grieving the loss of a beloved family pet, or know you are getting ready to, I highly recommend reading this book to your children. It’s like it took everything I tried to say and put it perfectly—and simply—in words and pictures.

Small Stories for a Big World

Sparkle Girl was little, she would sometimes leave out food for the fairies, along with a note.

She might put a fairy-size piece of cake on a dish, cut out a fairy-size piece of paper and write a note that, in really small letters, said, “Dear Fairies, Enjoy the cake.” Then she would sign it, “Your friend…”

As everyone knows, fairies are mostly out and about at night.

So, just before she went to bed, she would set the dish outside the door to the kitchen. After Garnet and I thought it was safe, we would go out and bring in the cake and note. We would then put out a gift for Sparkle Girl from the fairies with a note that they had written. It, too, was really small. The gift might be a couple of tiny, gemlike stones.

As far as I know, the fairies never, ever, failed to leave Sparkle Girl a note and gift the same night she put out her snack and note. The same cannot be said of the Tooth Fairy. Once, she failed to show up after Sparkle Girl had put a tooth under her pillow. When Sparkle Girl found the tooth still there the next morning, we told her that the Tooth Fairy in charge of her route must have gone on vacation to the South of France or somewhere equally exotic, and that there must have been some sort of snafu when it came to making sure that a substitute Tooth Fairy covered her route.

We told Sparkle Girl that, surely, everything would be sorted out by the following night. She put it under her pillow again that night, and I can assure you that the substitute Tooth Fairy did indeed arrive promptly.

With Sparkle Girl going into high school this August, it has been a while since there has been any call for the Tooth Fairy to visit.

These days, Sparkle Girl babysits for two really sweet girls— one 6 and one 3—who live across the street. After she comes home, Garnet and I enjoy hearing the reports she gives of their adventures.

The other day, during an afternoon together, Sparkle Girl told the girls about leaving something out for the fairies and helped them build little fairy-size houses. When she came home, Sparkle Girl, with a crispness that I hadn’t witnessed before, set about taking care of the details necessary for a visit from the fairies. She sent an email to their mother, filling her in, and started poking around our house for gifts for the fairies to leave.

She and Garnet found some tiny, smooth, white-pink stones that were just right.

Along the way, Sparkle Girl pulled out the cigar box where she keeps the treasures and notes that the fairies left her and sat on the couch and poked through it.

Sparkle Girl knew the girls’ regular bedtime, of course, and, after giving the girls time to fall to sleep, she and Garnet headed out into the darkness with the gifts from the fairies. Our dog, Faye, would have been delighted to go. Stealth is not her strength, though, so they asked her to stay home. Slinks the cat did accompany them.

The next morning, the girls and their mother made a special trip over to our house to show Sparkle Girl the treasures that the fairies left for them. I had the good fortune to be there. So I was able to see the expressions on their faces and listen as Sparkle Girl shared in their delight.

I felt as if the fairies had given me a gift, too.

By teen columnist Isabella Migliarese teenager who’s had a family vacation at the beach probably has fond memories of times spent playing in the ocean, building sandcastles, or possibly watching fireworks from a pier on the Fourth of July. I’ve been fortunate enough to vacation at the beach almost every summer since I was a baby. While I don’t remember that first beach vacation, I have many happy memories from summers at the beach after that. These vacations at the beach have brought me closer to family, given me time to think about the past year and an opportunity to look ahead to the upcoming year.

passing year. While many people may find quiet time walking alone on the beach, I prefer to shop alone and use that time to think. I usually find myself at Target wandering up and down the aisles with no particular purchase in mind, just some time to be by myself. While there are other shoppers at Target, I spend my shopping time leisurely strolling and thinking about how my school year went. As a rising junior, I’m going to have a busy year looking at colleges, making good grades, studying for SATs and finding time to volunteer. Instead of letting these pressures stress me out, I take the time to slow down and do something that I really enjoy. It’s easier to be introspective while shopping at the beach because you won’t run into anyone you know.

One of my favorite consequences of spending the summers at the beach is that we always traveled with family. Some vacations involved smaller groups of family, which would be about fifteen siblings, cousins, aunts or uncles. Some of the more memorable vacations involved sixty to seventy crazy Italian members renting houses side by side. These getaways were the most fun. I would spend all day playing outside with my cousins, some who traveled from as far away as Philadelphia. All we needed was a shovel, bucket and sunscreen; no iPads, televisions or smart phones. We played putt-putt, boogie boarded, built sandcastles, and buried our aunts and uncles in the sand. All these memories make me feel so lucky to come from a big Italian family whose sole purpose in life was to be in each others’ business.

Usually by the end of my beach week, I’ve suffered through interrogation from my brothers regarding my grades, my college plans, my driving habits (whether or not I’ve gotten a speeding ticket yet) and how often I’ve helped Mom around the house. All of my brothers are grown and living out of the house, so they feel obligated to share their view of the world and advise me on the best way to grow up. It’s funny how siblings wait until the last night they are going to be with you to shower you with their sage advice and wisdom. I love my family dearly and they’re all wonderful people, and sometimes their advice is good, but I usually take everything with a grain of salt. Being the youngest and the only girl makes life at home for me different from their life at home with a mostlymale household.During my vacation this past Fourth of July, I experienced first-hand the danger of swimming in the ocean during strong riptides. My family had to rescue a girl from the water, my cousin and almost me during these riptides. This same week four people drowned on a beach in the Carolinas. This eye-opening experience has given me more appreciation for these bossy older brothers who saved my cousin’s and a young girl’s life. These family angels are very important to me and I hope that you find time to spend with your family as well, whether it’s on vacation, or just around the dinner table.

30th Anniversary of the Enrichment Center

By Heather Spivey June 13th, around 250 guests gathered at the Wake Forest University Bridger Field House to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Enrichment Center. The guests enjoyed dinner and cocktails provided by WFU’s food service.

Before dinner, the Enrichment Center’s Percussion Ensemble entertained the guests with a beautiful array of selections, while they mingled and perused the silent auction. The live auction was comprised of 4 items by the Center’s artists—a beautiful painting, a one-of-a-kind quilt, a ceramic fountain and a decorative painted cabinet. In addition to these items, a dinner for 10 was auctioned—where food will be cooked by John Milner of Milner’s Southern American Restaurant and served by Board members, while the dinner guests enjoy entertainment by the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble.

Dressed as mimes, the Enrichment Center’s Dancers were full of expression and excitement as they greeted and thanked the guests for coming.

Everyone appreciated the evening and had a fabulous time. All the proceeds of the evening went to support the Enrichment Center.

(Yields 4 cups)

1 cup cherry juice

WATERMELON FROSTY

Prep Time: 15 minutes

4 Tablespoons Lime Juice

3 cups orange juice

1 Tablespoon sugar

(Yields 2)

1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk

Club soda

2¼ cups frozen watermelon cubes

1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

Lime slice for garnish

½+ cup water

1 tbsp orange zest Directions:

2 Tbsp maple syrup 1 large lemon, squeezed (lime juice also works very well! use 2 limes) 1 fresh banana

Directions: 1.Add all ingredients to the blender, plus ¼ cup of water.

2.Blend, adding more water as needed to blend, but add as little as possible to keep your frosty thick.

3.Pour into frosted cups.

4.Add garnish.

Directions: 1. Combine orange juice, sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice and orange zest in large bowl; mix well.

2. Pour into 9-inch square baking pan.

3. Cover and freeze just until edges are frozen, about 1½ hours.

4. Using a fork, scrape frozen granita toward center to break up ice crystals. Pat mixture evenly into pan.

5. Cover and refreeze. Repeat every 30 minutes until granita is firm, about 4 hours.

1.Combine cherry and lime juice in small pitcher.

2.Stir in sugar to dissolve.

3.Fill two glasses or cups with ice.

4.Pour cherry/lime juice mixture over ice.

5.Top juice mixture with club soda and garnish with a lime.

This exhibit features 27 black-and-white photographs of Maya people, traditional craft activities, archaeological sites and colonial constructions taken in Guatemala during the 1960s.
