The first day of spring is March 20th, and I think we can all agree, it can’t get here fast enough! It’s been an unusual winter for us, and most of the country for that matter, so I, for one, am thrilled! Our cover this month features the Brenner FIT program. What a great example of two local organizations (Wake Forest Baptist Health and the YMCA) coming together to address the needs of our community. Helping children and families live healthier lifestyles is what it’s all about!

March is the start of our annual Summer Camp Showcase issues, so be sure to check out pages 52 thru 55. It’s a great resource for parents to find those perfect camps and create a summer to remember for their child. Be sure to look in the April and May issues as we delve further into what each camp has to offer.

And, not to be missed, is our 2nd Annual Summer Camp Expo on March 9th, from 1–4 p.m., at BB&T Ballpark.

more than 90 years, the women who make up the Junior League of Winston-Salem (JLWS) have committed themselves to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community. Nine years ago, the positive impact these women make on the community grew yet again, with the first annual Tour of Fine Spaces. True to Junior League tradition, the event was an instant success, and this year’s tour is sure to continue that tradition!

“The 9th Annual Tour of Fine Spaces is a fundraiser that supports programs funded by the JLWS,” said Tour of Fine Spaces Committee Member Lindsay Stanley. “This year's tour will feature 10 amazing homes—from historic charms to new construction—all have been recently renovated or newly built by local area builders, architects and designers. At each stop on the tour, you can also get a taste of some of your favorite restaurants from around town. The following restaurants are participating this year: Milner’s, Mozelle’s, Spring House, Silo, Kilwins, Dioli’s, Black Mountain Chocolate, Café Prada, Raylen Vineyards, Foothills and Julia’s Takeaway Gourmet.”

Only the best gain a spot on the tour, so those who attend the event are guaranteed a day full of remarkable design and fascinating décor. “Local builders, designers and architects select their best work and submit the homes to be featured on the Tour of Fine Spaces,” said Stanley. “This year’s tour includes 10 homes, all in Winston-Salem, and includes Old Salem, West End, Buena Vista, Old and New Sherwood neighborhoods. Funds raised by the 9th Annual Tour of Fine Spaces are used to support the programs funded by the JLWS. The JLWS’s purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. With approximately 1,000 members, the JLWS has helped to inspire and establish vital Winston-Salem based community organizations and events, including the Arts Council, the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem, Ronald McDonald House, SciWorks, Komen North Carolina Triad Race for the Cure, as well as READ TO ME and BOOKMARKS festivals.

The 9th Annual Tour of Fine Spaces is scheduled for Saturday, March 22nd. “There will also be a VIP Ticket Holder Event hosted by Schiffman’s at their newly renovated store from 9–11 a.m. the morning of the tour,” said Stanley. “Mimosas and a taste of a brunch item from a local restaurant will be served to kick off the Tour of Fine Spaces. The application we use is HIPAA compliant, secure and also has GPS technology, so we can account for our employees at all times,” Brad commented. It seems like a simple concept; however, Trustient is the only home healthcare service with such technology on board.

What is Crohn’s disease?

What is Crohn’s disease?

Crohn’s Disease is a chronic condition that causes recurrent episodes of inflammation involving the lining of the intestinal tract.

Although the exact cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown, it has been linked to race, family history, smoking and an abnormal immune response to intestinal bacteria.

Symptoms include: abdominal pain, cramping, severe diarrhea, bloody stools, weight loss and malnutrition.

Why are CT or MRI enterography important?

Cutting-edge radiology imaging, such as CT or MRI enterography, has become increasingly important in the diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. Enterography is when the patient drinks non-harmful liquid contrast prior to the procedure. This contrast highlights the intestines, improving detail. Both CT and MRI are superior for locating areas of intestinal involvement and evaluation of associated complications.

What if there are complications?

Chronic intestinal inflammation can lead to: • Areas of intestinal narrowing called strictures, which can cause intestinal blockage.

• Pockets of infection/pus, called abscesses.

• Abnormal communications between the intestine and other structures in the body, called fistulas.

How is Crohn’s disease diagnosed?

First, all other possible causes for the symptoms should be ruled out. Radiology imaging, such as CT and MRI, are used to help make the diagnosis. A CT (Computed Tomography) uses radiation-producing x-rays to take detailed pictures of all the structures inside the body. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) does the same thing,

Are there advantages of MRI over CT? The first and most important advantage of MRI is the lack of radiation exposure (unlike CT). Crohn’s disease has an unpredictable lifelong course that includes frequent relapses. Since it often affects young patients, who are most vulnerable to the potential adverse effects of repeated radiation exposure, MRI is better suited for repeated imaging for disease monitoring and surgical planning.

A second advantage of MRI is the ability to take multiple pictures over time and link them together to make a short movie or “cine.” This shows intestinal movement and

helps find areas that look or move abnormally, thereby helping doctors identify areas that should be monitored or even removed, to avoid further complications.

The third advantage of MRI is its superior ability to produce images that are very sensitive to the smallest amount of “active,” or ongoing inflammation. This leads to earlier detection and therefore earlier treatment.

What should I expect during a MRI? Since MRI involves large magnets, you will be asked to remove all metal from the body. In addition to drinking liquid contrast, contrast may also be injected into the vein during the exam, through an IV placed by the technologist prior to starting.

For people who experience claustrophobia, anti-anxiety medication can be arranged by a physician. You will be placed on a table that slides into the magnet, which is shaped like a large cylinder. Each set of images takes a few minutes to acquire and the entire exam takes anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes. After the exam is over, the IV will be removed. The images are transferred to a computer for the Radiologist (radiology doctor) to review, and a detailed report is sent to your physician.

adults, we are all aware of changes in our bodies. Besides the creaks and cracks, we may notice that things do not taste quite the same, our hearing is not as clear and our eyesight is not quite as sharp.

We chalk these changes up to the aging process.

Children are usually not as vocal when it comes to changes involving their senses. Parents need to be vigilant in watching for signs that their child is having an issue that needs a professional diagnosis. “I like to see children have a full routine exam around the age of five, and certainly before they start school,” said Dr. James Kent Doub, an optometrist who has a special interest in Pediatric Vision, with Hawthorne Eye Associates. “The reason is that a child can have an eye condition known as amblyopia (‘lazy eye’) in which the brain does not develop good vision in the lazy eye. This is usually brought on by a refractive difference between the eyes. Refractive means a need for prescription eyewear. This needs to be corrected before the age of eight. After age eight, it is more difficult to correct.” Correction may consist of glasses and/or eye patching.

Even if your child receives yearly pediatric exams, certain eye issues may not be discovered. “In the pediatrician’s office, children are usually tested only with an eye chart, and that does not always detect amblyopia,” said Doub. “More importantly, it does not test for refractive conditions that lead to amblyopia, or a lazy eye. It is more of a pass/fail for what the child sees for his or her age.”

There are some signs to look for that may indicate the need for a more thorough eye exam. “Constant rubbing of the eyes, an eye that turns in or out all the time or that turns when the child is tired (this condition is what we find with a lazy eye at times) can be indications,” said Doub. “Also, parents may notice that the child is squinting to see at a distance, particularly at around the age of eight when the child may become near-sighted (myopic). A child who has had difficulty in school when it comes to reading; or has difficulty with near tasks and is unable to complete assignments [may be cause for concern with regard to their eyesight.] Many children who have a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD also may have a vision problem that has not been detected until it’s much too late. A child with 20/20 vision does not always indicate there is not a vision problem. The visual system works not only with the visual acuity (20/20), but it is also how the eyes work together, and also how the brain processes the vision stimulus. An inefficient visual system results in inefficient learning.”

There is nothing for a child to fear in visiting Hawthorne Eye Associates, as children’s exams are similar to those of adults. “In both exams, we get a good medical history, check the vision and check to see if there is a need for glasses,” said Doub. “A pediatric eye exam is fun—nothing hurts, and there are no shots. We are not going to do anything that makes the child uncomfortable. We check the health of the front of the eyes and also the health of the internal eyes. We check to make sure the muscles that control eye movement are working properly, and also pupil function. When looking at both children and adults we look for any indication of any systemic conditions that show up as ocular manifestations. The one difference that we may find is that with an aging population there is more incidence of eye disease, such as glaucoma and cataracts. Children, however, can [also] present with these conditions.”

While it is most important to have eye exams which can detect other medical problems that may exist, there are things we can do to help keep both our children’s, and our own, eyes healthy. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection, eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, keeping diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure under control, and wearing protective eye wear whenever there is a possibility of getting a foreign body in one's eyes, are ways of protecting and helping our eyes.

Kawasaki’s Disease: Early Detection is Key

was your average 5-year-old. He got up in the morning, ate his toaster strudel, and dawdled while brushing his teeth. His mother hurried him along, as she had to do most every morning, so he wouldn’t be late for kindergarten.

Alex was having a good day though, and he trotted into school happily.

Alex

His mother was very surprised when she got the call that Monday morning to pick him up.

He had spiked a fever to 103. When his mother arrived, Alex was somewhat cranky with the fever, but had no other symptoms that she could tell. She bundled him up, took him home, gave him Tylenol and put him to bed.

Alex’s fever persisted despite the Tylenol, and that night his mother was startled to read 105 on the thermometer. She vowed to call the doctor first thing in the morning. The doctor reassured her that there was a virus going around and that Alex should have a fever for another day or so. As long as he didn’t have any other symptoms that worried her, she should just watch him and continue with Tylenol for comfort. His mother watched him carefully. His eyes seemed red, but there was no matting that might suggest pink eye and his lips seemed dry, but he was drinking fluids well and had been peeing regularly.

When Thursday came and Alex still had a fever of 104, his mother took him to the pediatrician to be evaluated. He now had a fine rash on his belly, his lips were cracked from being so dry and his hands seemed swollen. Alex’s tongue had a bumpy appearance that resembled the skin of a strawberry, and a swollen lymph node in his neck.

The doctor discussed the grouping of symptoms and told Alex’s mother that she suspected Kawasaki’s Disease (KD). Kawasaki’s is an uncommon disease of blood vessels, lymph nodes, skin and the mucosa of young children. No one knows what causes KD, but it is more common in late winter and spring. The fever in a classic case of KD must last for more than 5 days—this, combined with the red eyes, cracked lips, rash, changes in the hands and feet, and single large lymph node on the neck, makes the diagnosis.

There are some lab findings that can help to confirm the diagnosis, but no test is diagnostic. When KD is suspected, an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) is necessary to rule out changes in the arteries of the heart, including aneurysms. This is the most feared complication of KD, since it can lead to heart attacks in young adults.

The good news is that this complication can be avoided in most cases with treatment.

Short hospitalization is needed for monitoring and treatment, including IV immunoglobulin and aspirin. The majority of symptoms respond very quickly to treatment and full recovery is expected.

Alex’s doctor recognized the symptoms and made the diagnosis. The diagnosis can be much more difficult when it is early in the illness, when not all the symptoms are present, and when the age of the child is atypical—like that of young infants. Many things can look like KD, including severe allergic reactions, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, adenovirus and even strep throat.

Timely care and an accurate diagnosis before the 10th day is key to a good outcome. If you are ever concerned about your child’s fever, or your little one just doesn’t look right to you, trust your instincts and call your doctor. Moms and dads are the first line of protection for their children. Doctors become pediatricians for a reason. It is a calling, not a profession.

Kidney Stones By: Meghan E.W. Corbett times of year lend themselves to health awareness. We protect ourselves from the flu in the late fall and winter months; we worry about colds and allergies in the spring and early fall; and summertime makes us aware of all the exercise we meant to do after the holidays. While it is important to be aware of all of these, it is equally important to be aware of other less-known seasonally influenced health concerns as well—such as kidney stones in the late spring and early summer months.

While kidney stones can occur year-round and are always less than pleasant, the warmer months increase the chances for this painful condition.

“A kidney stone occurs when a solid material forms in the normal liquid urine,” said Dr. David Cook of Carolina Urological Associates. “They are usually made of calcium oxalate, but other stone types also occur. It is thought that people are more likely to become dehydrated and thus make less urine in the hotter weather of the summer. The less urine, the more concentrated it is with the minerals that form stones, so stones are more likely.”

Some people are more likely to get kidney stones than others, so knowing your risk is important to prevent them. “There is no ‘main cause’ of kidney stones,” said Dr. Cook. “Depending on the type of stone, they may form based on several factors, [including] genetic predisposition, diet, liquid intake and other environmental influences. General advice to prevent kidney stones includes keeping yourself well hydrated while lessening meat and salt intake. Lean people have fewer stones than those who are overweight, so losing a few pounds for most people is good advice.”

While kidney stones are not rare or life-threatening, they are uncomfortable.

Knowing your risk factors and doing what you can to prevent them is important. It is also important to know the facts about kidney stones.

“There are a [couple] misconceptions about kidney stones that I can debunk,” said Dr. Cook. “The first is that what causes pain with a stone (which can be severe) is not ‘passing’ it, but if it causes blockage or obstruction of the kidney, that is the source of the pain. So, blockage, not passage, causes the pain. Second, people often think certain fluids cause a lot of stones, like tea or sodas, but these play a minimal role in stone formation. Furthermore, the best liquid to drink to prevent most stones is water with some lemon juice squeezed into it.”

If you have had kidney stones before or experience them in the future, knowing how to treat them is smart. Food Allergy

Doss many families, peanuts and milk, eggs and wheat products may be typical ingredients added to a child’s lunchbox; however, to a child with a food allergy, the slightest exposure could result in an unexpected trip to the emergency room. Every day that a parent or child substitutes Wowbutter or Sunbutter for peanut butter, the nature of food allergies changes toward a positive outlook. As food allergies become more prevalent in children, parents need to extend safety practices beyond a classroom environment and consider occasions such as birthday and slumber parties, and social gatherings. Families in our community are in luck. Angela Fuller, Food Allergy Families of the Triad (FAFT) founder, can offer emotional support and resources to our local community.

From a child's perspective, feelings of shyness, selfconsciousness, embarrassment, and/or social isolation can result. The answer is to educate our community on the many ways to create a safe environment for all children with food allergies. Angela explains, “Many still do not understand the life-threatening nature of food allergies and all the possible ways an accidental exposure can occur. For example, a child who eats peanut butter and jelly or goldfish on the way to school without washing his or her hands before entering a classroom can lead to a lifethreatening reaction. The residue left on a child’s hands and then transferred to surfaces is enough exposure to cause anaphylaxis.”

Families have a wonderful resource in FAFT. Angela shares, “I longed for a connection with others who were raising children with food

allergies; although on-line resources were helpful, they did not provide all the support needed. FAFT can assist those living with food allergies by connecting them with trusted resources, so they can make informed decisions for their family.”

FAFT advises parents to: Seek medical advice from experts: (Board Certified Allergist, Registered Dietician, or Pediatrician) and keep looking until you find one that is satisfactory. Ask others living with food allergies for recommendations.

Educate yourself and create a support system: Joining organizations such as FARE (national) and FAFT (local) will help you stay connected to the latest research, recommendations, food recalls and local events through local meetings, webinars and regional conferences.

Become a food allergy detective: Learn how to read labels and don’t assume foods are safe by only reading the ingredients. Some children are sensitive enough to react to foods that are not made in dedicated allergen- free facilities.

Call the company to inquire about manufacturing practices and cross contamination. Do not rely on “safe snack” lists, because manufacturing practices can change at any time. Read labels every time you purchase, call companies if new products are introduced or product packaging changes.

Be prepared and communicate: Emergency medicines (Epinephrine auto-injectors, Benadryl, etc) should always be with you as well as a cell phone and safe snacks. For parties and social gatherings, call ahead so accommodations are in place before you arrive. Be matter of fact when communicating

what safeguards need to be put in place with your child’s teacher, caregiver, coach, or a waiter. Some people may unintentionally forget; so remind people often!

Know your rights: Talk to your school administrator about a Section 504 Plan and ask your CPA about medical deductions for individuals on special diets.

Be creative: There is almost always a safe alternative. Be open to new foods, adapting recipes, alternative education options and new traditions. Create the life you desire for your child and your family. Never let your child’s allergies define him or her as a person.

Seeing the Change...The Truth About What it Takes.

By Kelly Lewis, CPT article is different than the others that I’ve written; you see, this one is particularly personal to me. It is why I love what I do and why I thank God every day that I have the privilege of doing it. Watching clients reach success and achieve their goals has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The amount of determination and commitment I have witnessed over time has been inspiring. In my experience as a personal trainer, clients who have achieved success have instituted three critical changes into their lives.

Those three changes are a focus on sound nutrition, a commitment to exercise, and a purposeful change to their thinking and behavior.

The first of these changes is a focus on sound nutrition.

It is essential for weight- loss success. Food journaling has been proven to be a highly effective tool and has several benefits. It helps keep us accountable for everything we put into our body. It is a very eye-opening experience to see your daily food intake in black and white. Culturally speaking, we engage in so much mindless eating. The trouble is that we have no concept of how those calories add up over the course of our day. “One little treat” multiple times each day will undoubtedly make an impact on your weight-loss goals.

Journaling is a great way to create thoughtfulness in regard to food choices. Often having to document a food choice is simply enough to discourage us from eating it. And finally, journaling helps makes us aware of our portion sizes. A common mistake is feeling that we can have an extra serving of a food if it is considered a healthy choice. But the truth is that all foods count towards our intake and those choices will determine our success or failure.

The second change implemented by those who experience long-term success is the commitment to exercise.

An exercise regimen must be of QUALITY and it must be CONSISTENT. Quality means that it makes the most of your time. It should involve all major muscle groups, compound movements, and be executed in an interval-style format.

Frequently changing your routine will keep your body guessing and will provide you with the best result. Consistent means that you commit to exercising regularly, aiming for a goal of 30 minutes, five days each week. If five days a week seems unmanageable at first, try sneaking in several small bouts of exercise in throughout the day. Some days you might not be

able to commit to a solid 30 minutes, but most of us can find several five-to-ten-minute windows to get our heart rate up. Above sound nutrition and exercise, I have found that the single largest component of a client’s success is a change in thinking and behavior.

Positive behavioral change creates the desire for people to Kelly Lewis, CPT succeed long-term. It is the difference between temporary drastic changes, resulting in only short-term results, and making more realistic changes that create results that will last a lifetime. Clients that are successful recognize that they did not get out of shape in six weeks. Therefore, they do not place unreasonable demands on themselves to resolve the issue in an unrealistic time frame.

Instead, they take it day-byBEFORE AFTER day, staying committed all the way. They put one foot in front of the other, doing the work it takes to reach their goals.

“The Talk”: Why, What, When, Where, How?

about ten years old when my well-intentioned mother asked me to sit down next to her to “talk about something.” She proceeded to go through a book she had purchased to help broach the uncomfortable subject of sex and what it is supposed to be—the purpose God intended for its role in human life. No doubt about it, she was ready for the conversation to be over, and so was I. Kissing a sweaty, stinky boy was not even on my mind yet, much less anything like THAT. But even then, I appreciated her interest in my well-being and her willingness to experience discomfort in an effort to make sure I “knew what I needed to know.”

However, making time to explain intercourse, when it’s appropriate, how to safely approach it and how to protect oneself is one of the most uncomfortable, but important, conversations a parent should have with their child. In a CDC-reported 2011 survey of high school students, 47% of them admitted having had sex: 33.7% in the last 3 months and 39.8% of those instances without condoms. 15% reported 4 or more partners.

Teenagers are more likely to engage in risky behaviors socially that may lead to sexually transmitted disease or even pregnancy. Drinking under age can also put young adults at risk of “date rape.”

As a mother of two young girls, yes, this scares me. As an OB/GYN, I preach “condoms, condoms, condoms” to any young sexually active patient. Family, social media and friends are the influences that help girls form their ideas and expectations regarding sex. Peer pressure, body image disorders, television, serious relationships: all of these are obstacles facing abstinence for teenagers today.

Whatever your educational or occupational background, this is not the topic anyone really yearns to discuss with their kids. But experts like the CDC (Center for Disease Control) have some helpful recommendations about how to approach it. They suggest that instead of waiting for “a good time to talk,” this should not be a “one-time conversation.” Finding a time when you are alone with your child, in the car, walking, working on a task together, is often more comfortable than sitting down face-to-face across the dinner table. My mother always said she could get my brother to talk more in the car than any other place: perhaps because he could not get out, did not have to make eye contact, and did not have any other distractions. Additionally, the CDC recommends looking for “teachable moments” in everyday life: television shows, the news, questions from your children, or stories they relay to you about their friends.

Why is it important? Prevention of STDs and unplanned teen pregnancy.

The CDC states that one-half of the 19 million new STDs diagnosed each year are among 15- to 24-year olds. In North Carolina in 2008, out of every 1000 births, 35 were from women 15–19 years old. The goal for

these private discussions is to provide accurate, supportive education to help teens realize what ideals and plans for their future may be jeopardized if they are not prepared to make mature decisions about sexual activity.

Education seems to be working. The teen pregnancy rate has been steadily decreasing in North Carolina since 1991.

So, “What do I say?” The CDC recommends first reserving judgment and assuring your teen that feeling sexual is normal, but how one handles those feelings is up to her. A mistake that some parents make is assuming their teen is sexually active, simply because he or she asks questions about sex. Curiosity is natural and parents should attempt to answer questions honestly and calmly with factual information. Hopefully, by being supportive and present in your child’s life on a daily basis, he or she will learn by example how to conduct oneself in the most important situations.

When evaluating patients, one must consider their cultural background, education and maturity level when explaining their condition and treatment options. I would recommend doing the same with your child. No two children are prepared to discuss such a serious topic at the same age or in a similar manner. Some will have more questions than others. Some will be silent, only to come back a few days later with carefully constructed inquiries. Only you can combine your household values with honest information about sexuality, and tailor it to the unique personality of your precious child.

Simply bringing teens in for a discussion about “the facts,” how to respect their bodies, and care for themselves may be all you and your teen need from a visit. Adolescents are one of my favorite populations to see as patients. They are naive and impressionable; hopefully, trusting and willing to see me as a doctor cool enough to joke with them and concurrently guide them toward self-respecting decision-making.

These types of discussions are easy to postpone. Whether you choose to discuss these matters on your own, or you wish for us to be involved, plan now how and when you will approach them. So, when I came across something recently while searching the web, it really struck my fancy. It was a series of videos put on by Volkswagen entitled “The Fun Theory.” The premise behind the theory is simple…make ordinary things fun to do, and more people will be encouraged to do them.

1. Any girl worthwhile is worth waiting for. And I don’t just mean physically. I mean that any girl who has her head on straight and has hopes and dreams she wants to make a reality – she deserves the time to make those things happen for herself. Don’t make her choose between you and her goals. She should be able to have both. And if she’s worth it, she’ll be worth waiting for while she pursues her dreams. And bonus – it will give you time to pursue yours.

Most teenage girls like to wear make up as it makes them look and feel older, but there’s an art to applying make up in a tasteful way. Make sure she knows she’s beautiful to you no matter what. Make sure, that above all else, you appreciate a girl for her natural beauty.

son just turned 16, which means a couple of things: 1) He thinks he knows everything and 2) He’s totally girl crazy. Actually, the

latter really isn’t new. This boy has been girl crazy since he was… oh… let’s see… born. Any form of estrogen that walked into a room, and he would bat his eyes and lay on the charm like nobody’s business. At our house, girls never had cooties and he experienced his first broken heart at the tender age of 5 when the little girl he had a crush on didn’t reciprocate. His favorite playmates were always girls, and when he was about 10, I cracked up when I overheard the 10-year old equivalent of a pick up line when he asked a former (girl) classmate, “So…you still playing with Power Rangers?”

But now that he’s 16, his girl-craziness gives his mother many sleepless nights. So, to my fella who thinks he’s ready to take life by the horns and thinks he knows all about girls,

6. If you want to really impress a girl, then be genuinely interested in her thoughts and ideas.

It may not seem as manly to listen to her talk about her love of beading, but if it’s important to her, then demonstrate that she is important to you by listening…again, by making eye contact.

7. Your job, as a guy, is to make other girls jealous of your girl, because of how great you treat her.

It’s not your job to make other guys jealous of your “trophy.” She’s not your arm candy.

Treat her like a lady.

8. They say chivalry is dead, but prove them wrong.

Hold open doors for your girl and let her walk in first. There’s a reason I stop in front of doors and wait for you to open them. I’m teaching you to be a gentleman. Use your manners.

9. Before you open your mouth in anger, remember the women in your life who you love… me, your grandmother, your great-grandmother… how would you want someone to speak to us? Speak to the girls you date in the same kind of manner you’d want someone to speak to the women who mean the most to you.

10.All girls dream of a Prince Charming or a Knight in Shining Armor. Don’t let me down. She’ll have to kiss enough toads in her life. Don’t you be one of them.

Welcome to the World, Baby Lucas!

my due date drew nearer and my waddle grew wider, I became more and more ready to meet my little man and not to be pregnant anymore. The labor thing loomed in the back of my mind. How long it would last? Could I stand the pain? Would everything go okay? One thing about pregnancy is that you are constantly bombarded with information and advice from other people, and other women especially like to tell you their birth stories. While it was great to hear people’s stories and advice, it was overwhelming at times.

Despite the information overload, I had decided to approach my birth with an open mind, a positive attitude, and made a pact with myself not to worry about the pain or fear labor complications. After all, when and how my labor developed was pretty much out of my hands.

By 37 weeks, my husband and I were eager for the arrival of our son. We had finished putting the nursery together, gotten our hospital bag packed, and our baby car seat installed. I personally felt like a beached whale, having grown bigger and bigger each day of my final month. We couldn’t wait to meet the little guy that did football kicks in my belly each night.

Most of what I had read about labor and learned in childbirth classes is that it’s not like the movies. For most people, it’s not a 2–3 hour scene where you contract and scream and push out the baby. In fact, I was surprised to learn that there are three stages of labor; and early labor, with sporadic contractions, can last up to 20 hours. However, a longer labor is usually more common for a first delivery. Thus, I had prepared myself for a lengthy build-up and Stage 1 labor, where I would patiently gather my things and mentally prepare myself for the hours to come.

But my labor didn’t happen like that. After working a long day at school, I noticed a long contraction that didn’t seem to subside. So, I decided to go home and take a nap. That’s when it happened, my water broke in bed. I was so shocked. All the information I had read said that only 10–12% of women actually have a noticeable gush when their water breaks. My husband was still at work, so I called the doctor and gathered my things, as the contractions began to hit hard and fast. Aren’t the contractions supposed to start before the water breaks, I thought?

My husband returned home from work minutes later to find me pacing the living room with my hospital bag at the door. His eyes grew wide, “It’s time.”

I said.

He hastily threw his night bag together, and we hopped in the car. I huffed and puffed through contractions all the way down the interstate, praying I didn’t deliver this baby in the car. Our doula, birth coach, met us at the hospital, and they quickly admitted me.

Though my water had broken and my contractions were 3–4 minutes apart, I found out I still had a ways to go when the doctor examined me. I proceeded to labor naturally for five more hours with the incredible support of my doula and my husband, even though my body felt like it was ripping in two. Finally, I

decided I needed some drugs.

“I want an epidural,” I moaned through a contraction. For me, this was the right decision. It allowed me to rest and get ready to push.

Five hours later, and after an hour and half of pushing, my little man emerged screaming at the top of his lungs. My heart leapt at that joyous sound as he burst into the world. My husband drew beside me as we stared adoringly at our son, tears of joy welled in my eyes. That moment can only be described as a God moment, this miracle of life permeating a hushed room.

The rest of our hospital stay was a blur of check-ins, information, family and friends. My body ached with exhaustion, but just looking on my son beside me made it all worth it.

It really hit us both, my husband and me, as we turned out of the hospital drive and onto the highway. I burst into tears...the immense responsibility, the unconditional love, the life I was now responsible for. This precious little man placed into our care. And this journey, this first trip to our home, was only just the beginning.

My heart sang with jubilee to hear your first shou ts as you entered the world. I am completely smitten with you.

A wave of relief, grati tude and immense lov e poured over me as they laid you on my chest. I ha ve prayed for you for so long, and it seems unbeliev able that you have finally ar rived, and I can hold you in my arms.

I am utterly and com pletely in love with yo u, all of you, your tiny fin gers and toes, your an gelic face, your coos and cat sounds. I pinch m ys elf constantly, asking if this is real.

Please know I will wo rk very hard to be the best mom I can be. I will give yo u my everything an d more. I am so excited to watch yo u grow, learn your per sonality, and have adventures with you.

Small Stories for a Big World

I miss Gus.

“Does that mean you won’t be able to eat the bananas?”

He was so cheerful.

One morning, Sparkle Girl and I were sitting at the kitchen table when she picked up a grapefruit in one hand and a pen with the other.

“I’ll be OK.”

“What are you up to?” I asked.

When we showed Sparkle Girl’s bowl of smiling fruit to Garnet and told her the names of the bananas, she said, “Hortense is no name for a banana.”

“I’m going to draw a face on the grapefruit,” she said.

“You can eat her first.”

“Aren’t you worried about the ink from the pen seeping through the grapefruit skin into the part you eat and poisoning you when you eat it?”

When I came home from work, I discovered that Mathilde was no longer with us. I didn’t ask why she, rather than Hortense, was first to go. Some questions are best left unanswered. It was only a matter of time, of course, until Gus was gone, too. When that day came, I missed seeing his sweet smile.

“No,” she said.

“Ah.” A few quick strokes of Sparkle Girl’s pen, and the grapefruit was smiling at us. Sparkle Girl liked the result so much that, after she returned that grapefruit to the bowl, she picked up the one next to it and gave it a face, too. A bunch of bananas were sharing the bowl with the grapefruits. The bananas were at that chipper “bright-yellow-not-a-brown-spot-on-them” stage. Sparkle Girl drew a face on the banana in the middle. A bright yellow banana with a smiling face is the sort of sight that makes you to want to smile. So I did.

The grapefruits were still smiling at everyone from the bowl on the kitchen table when Sparkle Girl’s friend Boosie came over for a visit.

When we told her about the bananas with names that had once shared the bowl with the grapefruits, she asked what the grapefruits’ names were.

“Are you going to give the banana a name?” I asked.

“They don’t have names,” Sparkle Girl said.

“No.”

“Could I name them?” asked Boosie.

“He looks like a Gus to me,” I said.

“Sure,” said Sparkle Girl.

As Sparkle Girl drew faces on the rest of the bananas in the bunch, I gave them names—Mathilde, Hortense…. Each face was different.

Each was sweet. Gus was my favorite. “You can name the grapefruit,” I said.

Boosie picked up the first grapefruit, brought it up to her face, looked it in the eye, and immediately said, “Ruthie.”

“I don’t want to name them,” Sparkle Girl said. “That will make them hard to eat.”

Hortense, as it turned out, met her fate when Garnet made a loaf of banana bread. It was delicious.

When she picked up the other grapefruit, the name didn’t come to her right away. After meeting its gaze for a few moments, Boosie said, “Chutney.”

Excellent. I never met a grapefruit named Chutney before.

desire to start a new business can be both exciting and frightening. For Amy Villanueva, co-owner of Ten Little Monkeys; Angela Fuller, founder of Food Allergy Families of the Triad; and Shannon Hodge, CEO of Home Instead Senior Care, having a vision and talent for business was only part of the equation. Ultimately, the responsibilities of work and the constantly changing variables of home life required the right balance.

Amy Villaneuva of Ten Little Monkeys shares, “In the beginning, we worked opposite schedules. That worked for a while, but we were giving up our ‘family time.’ Since the business was a start-up, my job outside of the home was key for my husband to stay with the kids. Our main challenge is certainly not unique to those who start a business with young children at home. It is one all entrepreneurs face. It is a question of when does the business start to make money instead of costing money? There is difficulty in working outside of the home; yet, this is truly a family business that my husband and I work on together. Due to the involvement, I must split my time between my job, the business, and the kids. The rewards definitely overshadow any difficulties we first encountered.

I have time with my family. My husband has satisfaction in raising the kids. Most importantly, the kids are involved in the business. They are learning responsibility and having fun. We get to enhance their parties, school events and picnics while promoting the business. Our youngest is particularly proud to wear his ‘Ten Little Monkeys’ shirt. He wants to be part of the business. Our oldest voices her opinion from purchasing equipment to pricing. Is it difficult?

Yes! Is it rewarding? Absolutely! In having our own home-based business, the real payout is our positive influences as role models.”

In Angela Fuller’s situation, the “call” to start a business resulted from her child’s diagnosis of multiple life-threatening food allergies at infancy. Angela shares, “After our son’s diagnosis, I worked part-time for two years. I missed work due to Holden’s illnesses, new symptoms, and dealt with the fear of an accidental exposure while [he was] in someone else’s care. Since his birth, I had an underlying feeling I needed to be at home. Managing our son’s diet, medical care and environment felt like a full-time job. My initial concern was losing my income, as my new work is entirely voluntary. Allergen-friendly foods are expensive, and then we have medicines, doctors’ appointments and unexpected trips to the ED. We home-school, so I am balancing his education, play time, karate, grocery shopping, teaching dance in the evenings, and working on our organization, “Food Allergy Families of the Triad.” At first, I tried a rigid schedule; inevitably, I received an important business call in the middle of morning lessons, or just as we sat down to play. I have learned to be flexible, enroll our son in the organization and adjust our home-schooling schedule as needed. While phone calls can wait, sometimes lessons learned away from his curriculum are more important. Before I make a business call or respond to an e-mail, I explain who I’m calling, why it’s important, and how it’s going to help other people. Holden attends business meetings, accompanies me on school presentations, leads epinephrine auto-injector demonstrations and contributes to projects when appropriate. Holden has a voice in the organization. He is learning problem-solving skills, public speaking, social responsibility, event planning, and keeping others safe with food allergies, which reinforces how we live our lives.”

Shannon Hodge, CEO of HISC, calls the balance of her career, home, marriage and three children a ministry. Shannon says, “I discipline myself to sit back and let the Lord take over. Think about the simplicity of sitting down to teach our 6-year-old-child to read when you have tackled the world that day. For people who are business owners and living it 24/7, there is rarely an 'off switch.' You have to be disciplined enough to want to switch modes, ‘On’ mode & ‘Dim’ mode. While working at HISC, I fell in love with their Mission Statement. They are real, and genuinely care for people. I remember asking my husband, “What do you think about us buying a franchise?” His response was, “If you feel this is what the Lord is telling you, then let’s pursue it.” Shannon recalls doors being shut, seven banks turning her down across 16 months, and being eight-months pregnant with her third child. Five years later, Shannon feels, “This is our ministry. We are impacting souls. When you are dealing with people at a critical period in their lives, they depend on you for trustworthy service. This might be the day that someone closes their eyes from this journey. At home, while our kids are very observant, we sometimes need a moment to just breathe in mercy & grace.

My husband and I hold each other accountable, and we do it with love. Weekends are with our children.

Local organizations come together to offer healthy living education combined with family fun.

“You need to eat healthier.”

Have you ever heard those words from your family doctor or your child’s pediatrician? Probably. But was the statement also followed up with tangible advice you could follow at home? Chances are, it wasn’t.

So where do you start? Where do you go for information on how to cook and eat healthier? How do you learn to make lifestyle changes your whole family will want to stick to?

Now there’s a place in Forsyth County where you can learn all of these skills — for free.

Brenner Families in Training (FIT), the Kohl’s Family Collaborative, the Northwest Area Health Education Center (NWAHEC) and the William G. White Jr. Family YMCA have teamed up to offer families a place to learn healthy living skills. Brenner FIT is founded on years of obesity research and education by medical pioneers and is a program at Brenner Children’s Hospital, part of Wake Forest Baptist Health.

“Many people will leave a doctor’s office knowing they need to make changes to maintain a healthy weight, but they don’t have the tangible skills to make lasting changes,” says Sara Ebbers, project coordinator for the Brenner FIT program. “Our classes are designed to help families in our community act on the changes they want to make as a family. Each family is unique and may want to focus on a different healthy living topic. We offer a variety of classes covering basic cooking, meal planning, nutrition, parenting, picky eating and more.”

The Brenner FIT Program at Brenner Children’s Hospital, part of Wake Forest Baptist Health, is one of the most comprehensive pediatric weight management programs in the country. Founded on the principles of behavior change and family-centered care, Brenner FIT aims to improve the health of children in North Carolina and beyond.

into the community. It provides a convenient, central location, as well as a family-oriented atmosphere. The renovated space, known as Brenner FIT at the YMCA, includes eight cooking stations, a conference room and dedicated community office.

The Brenner FIT Kohl’s Family Collaborative classes are a perfect match for the Y’s passion for community involvement. “Sometimes health initiatives spring up from just one organization, but it’s when a community comes together to address an issue that change really starts to take place,” says Curt Hazelbaker, president and CEO, YMCA of Northwest North Carolina.

What to expect from the classes The Brenner FIT Kohl’s Family Collaborative classes are designed to help families navigate common challenges related to healthy weight maintenance. In addition to cooking classes, nutrition talks and supermarket tours, you’ll learn more about healthy living with classes on picky eating and parenting called “My Kids Are Driving Me Crazy.” These classes help families establish a strong foundation that supports a healthier lifestyle.

“We focus on subjects that address challenges and opportunities of healthy

living,” says Ebbers. “Being healthy isn’t just about the food your family eats; it’s about the relationship you have with your food, the enjoyment you have sharing it with your family and about establishing habits you can maintain.”

Local parents are seeing the difference such classes make with how their children relate to food.

“My daughter has a new interest in wanting to participate in the kitchen,” says Maria Stump, a local resident who signed her family up for cooking classes through the program. “She takes the tips we learn in class and applies them to how we cook at home. Not only has this taught her more about how we can eat, it has allowed us to spend more quality time together.”

Another attendee, Vivette McMillian, had a similar experience. “Having the whole family cooking together was

awesome,” she says. “It’s not just that we got to learn how to prepare healthy foods. We also got to spend time together and use teamwork.

Now we’re looking forward to cooking together more.”

It’s no surprise these classes fill up fast, typically a month in advance. Those who want to attend are encouraged to enroll through Brenner FIT’s website.

For those who aren’t able to register before a class fills up (or for those who do attend a class but want to revisit what they learned), the program will soon offer videos of the classes online.

“We’re pleased with how popular this program has been with families in our community,” says Michael Lischke, director of Northwest Area Health Education Center at Wake Forest School of Medicine, which is helping to share programming online via its regional connections with health care professionals and community leaders.

Homework 101: Eliminating Stress and Promoting Self-Confidence

have noticed the numerous changes since the days of their primary and secondary years. While the internet has made the need to do research from actual books a lost skill, social media websites and “high tech” cell phones have become the tools of communication. Students are working at a faster pace and are exposed to material at a younger age. While first-graders are learning basic algebra concepts, most eighth-graders are considered on track if they are taking algebra.

In addition, AP courses are available to high school sophomores. Since homework has doubled if not tripled, more parents are offering their time to sit down and assist, which can develop into co-dependency. Never fear, parents; there is always a happy medium.

By understanding your child or teen’s preferred learning style, parents can establish new rules to promote independence. Despite the lateness in the year, there is still time to make a few changes.

Parents

While parents are trying to extract the smallest details about school, teachers are trying to find new ways to capture your child’s attention.

Resolving homework frustrations begins with identifying the problem. Sometimes a candid conversation can allow you to understand why your child or teen is avoiding his or her homework. More than likely, a similar situation is occurring at school; therefore, contact your child’s teacher to see if he or she can

recommend a strategy. Your child or teen needs to be on board; therefore, allow him or her to attend meetings and provide input.

• If you sit beside your child or remain in the room, try breaking tradition by giving your child a limit of only four questions.

End-of-year testing and finals can also create feelings of anxiety. Too often, students may not know how to express their feelings, except to act out in visible frustration. While teachers may be sending home essays or study guides as practice, children and teens need a viable plan to ease the feelings of nervousness.

This topic will be explored further in April.

• Most elementary students require a combination of visual, auditory and tactile methods to learn. Index cards, a dry-erase board, highlighters and color markers are great tools to promote self-sufficiency. In lieu of reading aloud to your visual learner, invest in a tape recorder. Students can internalize information right up to the minute before a test.

Students need guidance and practical strategies to help them feel their way through difficult homework situations. Below are a number of suggestions to help both parents and students.

• All students should be encouraged to study while seated at a desk or table. Working on a lounging surface will affect both handwriting readability and concentration.

• Many students benefit from reading the directions aloud. Underlining key words also will encourage clear expectation, especially if there are multiple steps. Ask your child to restate the directions in his or her own words.

• Guide your child through the first two questions, offering both praise and affirmation that he or she can do a few more independently.

When students verbalize steps aloud, their feelings of confidence increase.

• Middle and high school students would benefit from working for 45 minutes to an hour with a ten-minute break. Social media sites and cell phones should not be close by when a teen is studying. Breaks help refresh concentration.

• Since most students are tired by the end of a studying session, encourage your child and teen to begin with the most challenging subjects first.

Elementary, middle, and high school students express their frustrations differently. Homework is a battle; however, there are steps to eliminate heavy stress levels at home. Teachers are a wonderful resource even in those final months of school. Candid conversations will help pinpoint the problem and find “acceptable” solutions.

Get Involved in Musical Theatre Written By: Angela Levine

When Stephanie Guelzow begins talking about musical theatre, her eyes light up.

It’s one of her passions – and this passion drives her to tackle complex shows, along with the middle school students each spring, at St. John’s Lutheran School. Beauty and the Beast, Annie and this year’s play – Godspell – are just a few plays in Ms. Guelzow’s fourteen-year run as theatre director.

When did you first get involved in musical theater?

In high school, I auditioned for a community theater production on a whim. I didn’t get cast but was asked if I wanted to help back stage as a stage manager. That’s where I got hooked! I really began to understand and love technical theater in college, specializing in Communications/Theatre in addition to getting my BA in Elementary Education. After graduating, I continued to work with local community theaters.

How did you start the theater program at St. John’s?

I was asked to teach theater as part of the middle school curriculum at St. John’s. While working on my Masters of Education in Theater, I changed grades and could no longer teach theater as a subject. So the music teacher and I started an extra-curricular theater program for the middle school. Our first show was so well received that we knew we had something that would be worth continuing.

Why is having a strong theater program important?

As with all the arts, I believe that theater is an important part of a child’s education. Besides giving them something of which to be proud, it provides a creative outlet, helps children gain confidence and understand cooperation, and enriches their life experience.

How does St. John’s use the spring musical as a means of inclusivity for the students?

It’s all about opportunity. As with our athletic program, everyone who commits to being part it will be included. We find a place for everyone who auditions on the stage. Everyone has something to contribute, especially to a something that takes so much cooperation.

What excites you most about this year’s musical, Godspell, Jr.?

I have loved the music of Godspell since I was in high school. The script has been on our short list several times, but this year, the time was right to do it. This show will give us a great vehicle for talking about faith and what makes it personal. I’m also excited about the creativity that this show allows. It’s like a blank canvas – you can do so many things to make it different.

What moments stand out for you in the years you’ve been doing shows at St. John’s?

There is nothing that compares with the energy of an opening night.

Each one is special, and it never gets old. I especially enjoy the looks on the kids’ faces when they finish that first performance and see the pay-off for all their hard work, especially when it’s their first time doing a show like this.

St. John’s is a great place to get involved – and musical theatre is just one of the ways students can do that.

Developmental Milestones

section of Forsyth Family is designed to talk about Developmental Milestones.* Each month, we talk about various ages and stages of our infants and toddlers, all the way up to the social and emotional health of our high school and college students.

For first-time parents especially, this is a very worrisome topic.

This

When I was pregnant with my son, I read What to Expect When You’re Expecting until it was a worn out, dog-eared rag of a book. And then, when Charlie was born, I got What to Expect the First Year. For the undiagnosed OCD mother that I was (eh-hem, am)—this book was something of a torture device. I agonized over every single little detail.

Was this or that normal? Was he growing the right way? Is a child supposed to poop that much? In fact, I’ll share a little secret with all of you dear readers… when my son went in for his first check up, I went to the appointment fully armed with a journal of his daily body temperature, his feeding times and ounces, his number of pee and poo diapers, and how many times a day he spit up. And all this detailed information included graphs and a spreadsheet. Charlie’s pediatrician had been around for a while…in fact, he’d been MY pediatrician. So when he said that the color-coded bar chart was a “first” (albeit, while choking on laughter), I knew that was saying something. It took me a few years to realize I may have been a little over-the-top.

Every first-time parent worries whether they are doing the right thing, and moreover, if their child is developing at the right rate. Play dates may be fun for the kids, but worrying mothers compare notes on percentile rankings, potty training, solid foods, and a whole host of developmental milestones our children are supposed to meet. We see the progress of other children and feel that we need to push our children to meet or exceed others. We live in a highly-competitive race to the finish line,

Developmental milestones are defined as “The stages in the neuromuscular, mental, or social maturation of an infant or young child, generally marked by the attainment of a capacity or skill.”

Knowing the developmental milestones for your child is important. It’s great to know if he or she is on track, but the “norm” for some may not be the norm for others. If your wee little prodigy is able to roll over at four months, great! But it’s okay, too, if he or she takes an extra month to get there. You may be wondering why your 1-year-old hasn’t spoken his first words yet, but let me assure you—there will be a time very soon that you’ll be telling your child to be quiet and to stop talking!

I’ve got 16 years of experience being a mom. When I brought my son home from the hospital, I was terrified I was going to break him…thus, everyone who cared for him was subject to filling out the detailed journal of his daily life for the first 6 months. I never took the time to put together his baby book, but if my son ever asks, I can tell him exactly what he ate on March 14th, 1998, and how many poopsy diapers he had that day. I can’t say exactly when I began to relax about things, but I think everyone was much happier when I did. I paid attention to the percentile rankings when we went to the doctor, and once Charlie started school, as long as he was on grade level, I didn’t worry too much.

While parenting is a wonderful and rewarding experience, it’s so scary.

Until they start delivering babies with a User’s Guide and Handbook, we’re going to have to trust our judgment and instincts…we’re going to have to let our children develop at their own rate and in their own time.

The good news for you potential two-time parents out there: they say that the 2nd child is much easier than the first…. All Ages Friendship—One of the Most Important Life Lessons

By Lisa S.T. Doss friendship begins at babyhood, children learn the rules themselves. We all remember passing along a note to an elementary school peer which asked the question, “Do you like me?”

Three boxes were drawn with the words “Yes,” “No,” or “Maybe” written underneath. Looking back, the act of sending the note and waiting for the admission from a potential friend seemed brave; yet, each trial and error helped us children grow. It takes time for children to learn the value of loyalty, trust, truthfulness and kindness. Those core values begin with the influence of parents and are expanded to include many types of teachers.

The proverb is true. It takes a village to raise a child. The first friend a child has is his or her parents, which branches out to include, potentially, siblings and grandparents. Neighbors, older children, church and school members add to the overall impressions and development of a child. By the fifth birthday, children have a concrete understanding of friendship, viewed as, “She plays with me; therefore, she must be a friend.”

Parents constantly encourage positive behavior though phrases such as, “Be nice,” “Share your toys,” “Use kind words,” and, most importantly, “Say you’re sorry.”

Research concludes that children who have close friends will work towards a resolution; therefore, the words, “I am sorry,” are a starting point to help resolve any conflict. Equally strong is the ability for children to understand and accept the gift of forgiveness. Modeling appropriate ways to behave allows children to copy polite responses, as well as see

forgiveness firsthand. Learning positive friendship skills can help children socially, and improve confidence and school performance.

Not all children can easily form a friendship. Since our youth have overscheduled and structured days and evenings, fewer opportunities are available for children to engage in social interaction. The art of understanding one another takes practice. Parents can accept the role as listener and questioner when children are openly sharing their experiences.

Guiding children through conversations will help them ultimately to become better problem-solvers. Children too often have difficulty expressing their feelings; therefore, create sentences for children to mimic when they are displeased with a situation.

Typically, children will continue to endure a friendship if emotionally or physically hurt. Parents who may want to intervene should contact the school or guidance counselor. Often when children are responding in a negative light, the problem may be more than just a tiff between friends.

Utilizing literature or movies as a tool can be helpful in discussing a character’s problems, as well as integrating children’s thoughts into finding meaningful solutions. Listening to age-appropriate audio books during short and long car trips can open a discussion between siblings and parents.

Sometimes children need a safe place to act out the situations that may cause anxiousness or discomfort, such as confronting, confessing, or apologizing to a peer; therefore, why not try role-playing?

Between the ages of eight and twelve years, children have the ability to play fairly, understand rules, trust with confidence, and can bandy about ideas with groups of similar interests. Research concludes that the ability to make friends is not the same as popularity; too often children will conform to a behavior in order to be accepted by a group. Encourage children to remain true to themselves, especially as pre-teens experiment with acceptance by the opposite sex. Best friends are vital to this age group. The skills gained during these relationships, such as honesty and loyalty, may help prepare pre-teens for healthy adult relationships. Since children still rely on the social skills learned from family members, parents remain “life counselors” to guide children toward good decisions.

The educational environment has a great influence on our children’s ideas and values. Whether they attend private or public school, go to church or participate in extra-curricular activities, children and teens are gaining important life skills in the treatment of others and how to be good citizens.

The game, “I like you, do you like me?” continues in adulthood, but in a different context. The thrill still exists in meeting a person who will become a life-long friend. To have friends is wonderful, but to be a friend is empowering.

A child's set of “baby” teeth typically stays in place until permanent teeth are starting to erupt - but this isn't always the case.

Whether from an accident, dental disease or other reason, sometimes baby teeth are lost too early and can have a long-term impact on the health and development of a child's oral health.

Baby teeth serve as "space holders" for the permanent teeth and encourage normal development of permanent teeth, bones and muscles. When a tooth is lost too soon, it has an effect on the teeth around it, potentially causing a shift in position or alignment and affecting the permanent teeth yet to come. Left untreated, permanent teeth may erupt in a crooked or crowded manner or simply have no place to go.

High School Academic Pressures Require Solutions

By Lisa S.T. Doss is a sixteen-year-old, college-bound student taking five honors classes this year. Her goal is to major in pharmaceutical chemistry. In addition to maintaining her honor-roll status, she participates in her school’s ROTC program and debate team.

“This is what I need to do to succeed in the real world,” she says. “It gets pretty stressful. It gets to the point where I have to just stop once in a while and try to give myself time to escape it all. I have to be very careful.

Where does academic pressure start? Stress is invoked as early as elementary school, and college aptitude begins with PSAT testing in middle school. Today’s high school students often appear to work harder than college students, due to a structured day and minimal hours to complete the three to five hours of homework. In addition to community service, students are improving their talent as an athlete, musician, dancer, or performer by either taking lessons or engaging in school-related practices. It all becomes part of the invisible competitive race to produce a more impressive resume for the college acceptance committee. In June 2013, Dr. Warren Stacks of Cornerstone Health Care stated, “Many of the major educational decisions my daughters had to make are behind them. Specialized programs now require specific preparation before college. We discovered [that] training in two instruments, plus classical voice training was necessary for music school. A generation ago, what they would be taught in college is now an expectation before they enroll.”

The consequences of academic pressure can take many forms, such as a need for perfection, worrying over grades, competition, parental pressures, or too many AP classes. There are ways to overcome stress, especially when a teenager’s worst enemy is himself or herself.

In two months, America's eight-year-olds will be preparing for their first “measurement” of school success. All year, starting in third grade, students are told how important it is to do well on their “End of Grade” (EOG) tests.

While children can “show” distress in various forms, parents need to be aware of the warning signs, such as nightmares; lack of sleep; refusing to go to school; excessive emotional states or outbursts; and/or a loss of appetite.

Conversations at home can help “calm” anxious feelings. A young student will do better if he or she can approach a “big” test with confidence.

By reducing the tremendous pressure, children and pre-teens will feel more comfortable about their week of testing.

Inspirational words can make an impact in a student’s life. By having a strong support system, especially during those critical moments, students can learn how to cope and change their perspective. Over-extended teens need to “schedule” time with family, friends and with themselves. Positive and supportive friends can help a teen maintain a healthy attitude.

A student named Sammy shares, “I have witnessed students crying in class after getting a low test score. I have friends who have gone without sleep a few nights in a row to keep up with homework.” According to a report of the Academy of Pediatrics, “Colleges are seeing a generation of students who

appear to be manifesting increased signs of depression, anxiety, perfectionism and stress.” What is the solution?

• Be aware of stress-related behaviors, such as casual comments about pressure, expressions of despair, or intentional harmful acts.

• Research proves that exercise, coupled with good nutrition, is essential for proper brain development.

• Creating a plan of time-management with study breaks and the application of organizational skills, even for the 4.0 student, is essential for a balanced life.

• Encourage teens to understand effective studying practices. Cramming and sleep deprivation are counterproductive habits; instead, frequently reading lecture notes, correcting quizzes and tests, and establishing a review session twice a week will minimize long studying sessions before a test and promote a confident, well-rested student.

On January 24, 2014, an article appeared regarding a 19-year-old track star who was the third undergraduate student from the University of Pennsylvania to commit suicide since winter break. Tragedy has become “common” at the college level.

Educating our students to have pride in their achievements is no more important than discussing the success that occurs beyond standardized test scores and a GPA.

Home can mean many things, depending on whom you ask, but the security that comes with a stable home is constant. Regardless of what your idea of the perfect home may be, Jill Burrus, Community Manager for Chamberlain Place Apartments, is determined to revolutionize apartment living in Winston-Salem.

“I actually came into this industry without any property management experience, but years of customer service and retail management experience,” said Burrus. “I just have to work with people, and the few times I had not been in customer service of some sort, I missed it terribly. We will also be working on new resident functions and are fleshing out ideas currently—some include having an art walk here by setting up some of our vacant units as display galleries; a craft/trade show that we would like to work on planning for the fall; and a summer planting project that I am brainstorming, so that our green-thumb residents can really make this feel like home!

In addition to sprucing up the grounds of Chamberlain Place, Burrus wants the property to feel more like a community for the residents.

“I moved to North Carolina from New York with my husband, sight unseen, so I understand and try to keep in mind that it can be a difficult thing to move, no matter what the circumstances are. We strive to make the process easy and actually fun,” said Burrus. “Chamberlain Place is a gated and quiet community, and I love it because it doesn’t feel like an apartment complex—but rather like townhomes. It has a slide and jets that spray water like a fountain; the dogs absolutely love playing in it and people love to watch them having a good time together. An eight foot wall of solid fencing surrounds the perimeter to ensure the security of our guests,” stated Tammy.

Since their opening in January, Ruff Housing has been welcomed as part of the Greensboro and surrounding community. “We’ve gotten a great response, and with our ribbon cutting we had several distinguished guests, including Mayor Nancy Vaughan, as well as staff members and ambassadors from the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, who have been very helpful to us. We gave tours of the facility, and people really seemed to enjoy it, especially peeking in on Chica, the dog we are fostering for the Guilford County Animal Shelter, and her six puppies, who will soon be up for adoption,” Tammy commented. But Ruff Housing has also moved into the Clemmons, NC, area, with their new grooming center.

Pampered Pooches Are Happy Pooches “This past November, Ruff Housing purchased ‘Aristocuts,’ a grooming salon and training school at 3511 Lawrence Street in Clemmons. It now operates under the Ruff Housing name. The same great groomers continue to offer their services there, and several people have expressed an interest in grooming school as well. Senior Services Art Show and Sale – Great Art for a Great Cause

By Susan Woodall inston-Salem and the surrounding area are home to many talented and creative people. For the fourth year in a row, many of these artists are coming together to sell pieces that will benefit a wonderful and much-needed program—Senior Services’ Meals-on-Wheels.

Started in 2011 by local artists Dell James and Bonnie Dempster, who along with their husbands, Frank James and Joe Dempster, are this year’s honorary co-chairs, the art show and sale is a collection of more than 40 well-known Piedmont area artists.

“There will be pottery, stained glass, baskets, wood carvings, notecards and jewelry for sale, along with paintings in a variety of media (pastels, oils, watercolors and acrylics),” said Mary Lee Roche, Marketing and Development Coordinator of Senior Services, Inc. “As a side note, for art patrons with a sweet tooth, there will be chocolate truffles for sale, as well. As in the past, it is expected that there will be in the neighborhood of 500 items available for purchase. All pieces will be priced for sale, and there will be a variety of prices, designed to match everyone’s pocketbook. All artwork is original.”

“The artists make a generous donation from each piece sold, and these funds go directly to provide nutritious meals for the homebound elderly in Forsyth County, through Senior Services’ Meals-on-Wheels program,” Roche continued. “Other funds raised by the show and sale come from event sponsorships and patron support. Wells Fargo is the Presenting Corporate Sponsor for this year’s show and sale. This is their second consecutive year of sponsoring the event.”

The Senior Services’ Meals-on-Wheels program is the oldest homedelivered meal program in the Southeast and the third oldest in the country. Each weekday, more than 1,230 hot, nutritious meals are delivered across Forsyth County by 1,858 caring volunteers to elderly who otherwise might go hungry. Recipients are homebound and physically or mentally unable to obtain or prepare meals for themselves, or have no responsible person available to provide meals.

This meal-delivery service helps provide both necessary nutrition and social contact for the elderly, enabling them to remain in their own homes. Last year the Senior Services’ Meals-on-Wheels program delivered its five-millionth meal!

Even with these amazing numbers, there are always people on a waiting list for meals, a need for volunteers and a need for funds. The art show and sale is a wonderful way to give to help the at-risk seniors in our community and get a beautiful piece of art in the process.

The sale will be held on Saturday, March 8th, from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Senior Services Center. There is no gala or preview party, so all pieces will be available for the one-day sale.

Discover Salem Lake During Creek Week

By Frank Elliott Lake Park is often called Winton-Salem’s “hidden jewel.” Offering boat rentals, picnic areas, some of the best fishing in the Triad and a scenic lake-side trail perfect for walking, hiking, jogging and biking, the park is a great destination for a fun family outing.

And this month, that fun family outing will be easier on the wallet, thanks to the free boat rentals the lake is offering during Forsyth Creek Week, March 15–22. The free john-boat rentals, courtesy of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks, are in line with the Creek Week organizers’ goal of keeping almost all Creek Week activities free, says Roseann L’Esperance, the chair of the Creek Week organizing committee. “Creek Week is all about encouraging people to get out and enjoy our waterways,” L’Esperance said. “Whether it’s at Salem Lake or Kernersville Lake Park (offering paddle boat discounts), on the Yadkin River, or along the Muddy Creek Greenway, we want everyone to come out, have fun and, in the process, gain a greater appreciation of all the ways that creeks and waterways improve our quality of life.”

As with the inaugural Creek Week, the organizers have stuffed the week with dozens of activities designed to appeal to just about everyone. Back again will be fly fishing clinics, “creek crawls,” a book discussion, a free movie, children’s activities, guided creek-side bird-watching excursions, photography contests and more.

Among the new offerings this year is activity that will appeal to anyone with a canoe or kayak on the Yadkin: In conjunction with the Great American Cleanup on March 22, the Yadkin Riverkeeper will lead a waterborne river clean-up between U.S. 421 and the Huntsville take-out 5.4 miles downriver.

Another new offering is a unique creek crawl on March 16 that will tour the sites where the Moravians used Salem Creek to sustain their lives. Mo and Martha Hartley of Old Salem Museums & Gardens will lead participants to the recently discovered “Brothers Spring” and other sites. Then Cornelia Barr of the Gateway Environmental Initiative will take over to show how this historic creek is faring today, and what it says about its future.

Folks more academically inclined can sit in on two “lunch and learn” lectures that will feature nationally recognized experts, one on aquatic ecosystems and the other on innovative technologies to absorb stormwater.

All these activities are designed to get people to appreciate our local waterways.

But there’s an ulterior motive, says L’Esperance. “People protect the things they value,” she said. “We want people to have a great time and realize how invaluable our local waterways are. If we can do that, then they’ll take more interest in protecting them.”

Call it the carrot-and-stick approach, without the stick. “Forsyth Creek Week is a positive approach,” L’Esperance said, “focusing on all the awesome uses of our water and how lucky we are to have so many creeks and streams in Forsyth County.”

This year’s Forsyth Creek Week is being organized by 15 local agencies with the support of presenting sponsor, North State Environmental. Other sponsors include the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities Division, HDR Inc., Green Resources and Haywood Industries. Their contributions ensure that almost all Creek Week activities are free.

Hospice Hope Run

Sonny Lacy: Husband, Dad and Granddad an Inspiration to Run By Carolyn S. Peterson people in our community are not aware of all the services that Hospice & Palliative CareCenter provides…that is, until they need them.

But that’s not the case with Sally Lacy; she was a volunteer at Hospice & Palliative CareCenter long before she ever needed their services. “I volunteered at The Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home about 8 years ago, and then I served on the group’s board with outstanding leaders from our community for 3 years. The staff there is unbelievable in their care for not only the patients, but for the family members whom they comfort in their loss. However, I never would’ve thought that I would need their services when I did,” recalled Sally.

Many

No One Grieves the Same The loss of her husband, Sonny Lacy, was one that came suddenly upon Sally, overwhelming her and flooding her with questions. “I went to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter’s grief counseling after the loss of Sonny. He was always so healthy; never using a golf cart when he played, exercising…I was the one who had health problems. When Sonny started complaining about abdominal pain and just not feeling good, we thought he had diverticulitis and I never pushed for him to go to the doctor. Once we went to the doctor, he was diagnosed with lung cancer which had spread to his liver and spleen. Even after radiation and great care from the doctors at Wake Forest Baptist Health, Sonny passed away in August 2012, just 6 months after his diagnosis,” Sally said. As the spouse left behind, many of Sally’s questions were “whys?”

“I didn’t understand why I didn’t push him to see the doctor sooner. I asked, ‘why him and not me? I had health issues, not Sonny. Then there are the questions about God’s timing…I needed someone to listen, a caring heart, and I found that at the grief counseling at Hospice.

I attended group counseling and had one-on-one counseling with a wonderful counselor, Kelley Ryan. Just knowing that there were others who were going through similar feelings like I was, really helped me find peace. I learned that no one grieves the same, some have more anger toward their loved one for dying, then others have anger toward God, but I learned that grieving is all about sharing and knowing that you can add to someone else’s experience by telling them yours,” commented Sally. The grief counseling meant so much to Sally that she decided to participate in the 2013 Hospice Hope Run with her team “Sonny Bunny.” “Our older grandchild, Lacy, couldn’t say ‘Sonny,’ so she called him ‘Honey,’ which later turned into ‘Honey Bunny,’ so naming the team ‘Sonny Bunny’ was right. I had T-shirts printed, and a friend brought everyone bunny ears to wear during the run. The support from not only our family, but friends, was amazing. We had those who ran or walked the race, and then we had those who came the day of the race and just visited with us. Thanks to friends present and not present that day, we raised over $7000 to help others in need of Hospice services. To us, the Hope Run was really about doing something positive in the memory of Sonny, ‘paying it forward.’ There’s another family out there who will need one of the many services provided by Hospice one day, and maybe the money we raised can help them. Such a wonderful organization that does so much for our community deserves anything that we can do to help them help others,” Sally stated.

Help End Child Abuse!

By Vonda Henderson , over 1,000,000 cases of confirmed child abuse occur in the US every year. Over 100,000 are in North Carolina. Those are staggering numbers to absorb. The Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center of North Carolina, founded in 1981, is working toward helping educate and prevent child abuse.

We have many opportunities available through this agency to pitch in and lend a hand.

Statistically

Programs are segmented into two categories, Prevention and Treatment, with numerous options within each. Many of the classes within the Prevention section target first-time parents and provide training prior to a child’s birth to better prepare parents in the care of their child.

PREVENTION: Classes such as the Welcome Baby program target first- time parents, focusing on teen parents. Fathers Matter is six-week class designed to educate Dads on how to care for babies, handle childcare issues, etc. Some classes include the use of a baby simulator to illustrate what happens to a child when certain actions are taken; for example, what happens when a baby is shaken. These are just a few of the educational programs offered through the Center.

A helpline, open on a 24–hour basis, known as Warm Line (336-725-BABY) is also available to answer questions and provide support at what might be a critical moment.

TREATMENT: Counseling sessions for families and parent/teen group sessions are options offered. Other options include Parent Aide, which isan intensive in-home intervention program; supervised visitations; and the reunification of child and parents.

A 24-hour counseling phone line is available as well.

You may ask yourself what the signs of child abuse are.

There are some specific signs shown by children which may indicate child abuse. They include: Unexplained injury Change in behavior Fear of strangers Fear of going home Regression (such as bedwetting, thumb sucking) Inappropriate sexual behavior As with other types of abuse, difficult as it may be to realize, child abuse is occurring as you are reading this. The youngest abuse victims need our help in breaking the cycle.

Foggy Origins of the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

By Justin Cord Hayes globe-trotting American newspaper tycoon wanders haplessly through thick London fog, searching for his hotel. The year is 1909, and William Boyce is stopping for a brief sojourn in Europe, en route to a photographic expedition in Africa. Boyce has one problem, though. He is lost. Suddenly, a young man appears and helps Boyce find the way to his destination. When Boyce tries to give the young man a tip for helping him, the boy tells him that he is a Boy Scout, just doing his duty. Boyce has never heard of the scouting program, and he is so amazed by the scout’s selfless act of assistance that Boyce has the young man take him to meet scouting’s founder, General Robert Baden-Powell.

After Boyce returns to the U.S., he incorporates the Boy Scouts of America.

It’s all thanks to a figure who has gone down in history as “The Unknown Scout.” Elements of this story have been augmented. For example, Boyce didn’t mention any fog when he recounted the story later. And he didn’t meet Baden-Powell right on the spot. Boyce was, however, intrigued enough by scouting to meet Baden-Powell later. The general, a veteran of the Second Boer War, believed the skills he developed in the military would be useful for helping boys develop self-reliance and responsibility. He held early scouting camps in 1907 and wrote the “bible” of the program, Scouting for Boys, in 1908.

An “Unknown Scout” and a world-traveling publisher were instrumental in helping BadenPowell’s scouting program immigrate to our shores, and a nearly forgotten man was critical to the success of the Boy Scouts of America. James E. West became the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. He held that post from 1911 to 1943.

Early on, he clashed with American scouting’s principal founder. Boyce wanted scouting to include boys who lived in rural areas, far from the cities in which most scout troops were located. West demurred. Boyce offered to publish a national scouting magazine, as long as it was published in Chicago.

For whatever reason, West wasn’t crazy about that idea either. Presumably in a fit of pique, Boyce formed the Lone Scouts of America, a competing scouting program for rural kids, which, ultimately, was folded into the B.S.A. West endured other clashes during his tenure as well. The B.S.A.’s first scouting handbook borrowed liberally from the British handbook, and some labor leaders perceived portions of the book as anti-union. Keep in mind that this was at a time when unions were in their infancy and very, very touchy. West changed the “offending” language.

In addition, West received criticism in the South for including African-American boys in the scouting program. He left scouting open to African-Americans, but he allowed Southern Boy Scout councils to create “separate but equal” troops.

Some Southern troops weren’t fully integrated until 1974!

Finally, West even battled the Girl Scouts! It’s true! West had a very proprietary attitude toward the words “scout” and “scouting.” He advocated against the Girl Scouts of the United States of America and even pleaded with Baden-Powell to do something to help strip “scouts” from that organization’s Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell

The feud heated up in 1918 and didn’t cool down until 1929. What made it end? Lou Henry Hoover became President of the Girl Scouts in 1922. Seven years later, her husband, Herbert Hoover, was elected President of the United States. Rather than risk a fight with the country’s Chief Executive, West backed down, letting the Girl Scouts go forth and create the world’s best cookies.

Girl Scouts – More than Just Cookies!

By Susan Woodall is that lull in the winter months, when Christmas is over and Valentine’s Day is not yet here, where only one thing can fill the gap—Girl Scout cookie time! But the Girl Scouts are about much more than delicious cookies.

The Girl Scouts was founded by Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, Georgia, in 1912. Low led a privileged life, attending the finest schools and traveling extensively. She was a painter and sculptor. From an early age, she enjoyed being outdoors and was very athletic. She was an excellent swimmer, captain of a rowing team, loved to canoe and was an avid tennis player. Young women of that time period were generally expected to read, paint, do needlework and learn skills that would make them suitable wives and hostesses.

Although this was a fine upbringing, Low wanted girls of all backgrounds to experience the pleasures of outdoor life and learn how to be resourceful and self-reliant.

Married, but with no children of her own, Low spent years trying to find something useful to do with her life. While living in England, she met the founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. The following year she returned to Savannah and joined the fledgling youth movement by founding the American Girl Guides in 1912 with 18 members. The name was changed in 1913 to the Girl Scouts.

Low wanted this to be an organization accepting of all girls. Through a series of ear infections and improper treatment, Low found herself almost totally deaf by the age of 26. It was very important to her to include girls with disabilities who, in those days, were excluded from many activities. Low encouraged her scouts to become proficient not only in homemaking, but to prepare for possible professional careers in the sciences, business, or the arts and not to let a disability be a deterrent or excuse for not attaining a set goal.

Today, there are more than three million members enjoying the fun, fellowship and experiences that make scouting a wonderful activity for girls from kindergarten through twelfth grade. For K–1 aged-girls, there is the Girl Scout Daisy level (Daisy was Juliette Low's nickname growing up). The Daisy level has girls learning about nature, science, the arts and the community around them, while taking field trips and earning participation patches. In grades 2–3, girls move on to the Brownie level and continue learning about their communities and the world beyond. After the Brownie years, come Girl Scout Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador levels. Girls can join at any time, so it is not a problem if one has missed being a Daisy or Brownie, etc.

Although Boy Scouts seem to get way more attention, girls who work hard and persevere can also reach a level equivalent to the Boy Scout’s Eagle Scout designation. Working through a series of steps, registered Junior Girl Scouts in grades 4–5 can work as a team to earn the bronze award; the silver award is for girls registered as Girl Scout Cadettes in grades 6–8 who complete a set of tasks, and it can be done as a team or solo; and the gold award, the highest girl scouting award and considered the equivalent to the boy scout’s Eagle Scout award, is presented to a Girl Scout Senior in grades 9–12 who challenges herself to change the world, or at least her corner of it. She must complete seven steps in order to achieve the gold award, which also makes her eligible for a college scholarship. Low wanted girls to embrace and explore all that life had to offer by growing mentally, physically and spiritually. These same values are instilled in each of the girls who join the Girl Scouts. The Girl Scouts’ alumnae include many famous women in all walks of life who took with them the valuable lessons they learned from scouting.

The Luck of the Irish?

St. Patrick’s Day approaches, you may hear of the “luck of the Irish.” Did you know that the expression is meant to be ironic? In other words, it points to how seemingly UNlucky the Irish, as a people, and Irish men and women, as individuals, tend to be. Is it any wonder, therefore, that we Irish are a superstitious lot (or that we’re known for imbibing more than our fair share of green beer on St. Patrick’s Day)? And I say “we,” as though I had grown up on the Emerald Isle. In fact, I have no idea when the Hayeses (my dad’s family) or the O’Learys (my mom’s family) left Ireland for U.S. shores.

Nonetheless, I know Ireland’s collective unconscious runs rampant in my DNA. How do I know?

Because, even though I am a college-educated, rational and intelligent person, I still cling to superstitions. I don’t want to…I just can’t seem to help myself. If I spill salt, I do indeed throw a bit over my left shoulder. I do not walk under ladders. I try not to break mirrors. And I don’t even know if those ARE specifically Irish superstitions! Some definitively Irish superstitions follow, though.

Be careful in graveyards. Irish tradition holds that stumbling over a grave is a bad omen. If you stumble and actually fall, though, then you’d better have a will. You’ll supposedly die by the end of the year!

On a related (and really icky) note, Irish superstitions about the “benefits” of contact with the dead are rife. For instance, being touched by the hand of a recently dead person can cure all kinds of ills in the living. And the Irish have the perfect cure for a headache. Just take the corner of a sheet that has wrapped a corpse and (ewwww) wrap the sheet around your head.

Animals figure in a great number of Irish superstitions, as well. Try to avoid running into anyone on your way to your local fishin’ hole. If anyone you meet along the way asks you where you’re going, then you might as well just go home. You won’t catch anything.

You’ve heard of the bad luck associated with black cats, but you also should avoid letting crowing hens (Hens can crow?) or whistling girls cross your path. By the way, if a rooster comes up to your house and crows, that could be good or bad, because it means you’re about to receive visitors. A favorite aunt? Good. That uncle who always asks you for money? Bad. And here are some miscellaneous superstitions. You already know the benefits of a four-leaf clover.

You may not know that it helps you win at gambling (not that I’m advocating gambling) and that it protects you from a witch’s spell. There’s a catch, though. Keep that shamrock out of sight and don’t lose it. If anyone sees it or if you leave it behind, then your good luck is gone! If you want a keepsake from your lover, then choose something other than a lock of hair. It’s unlucky to possess your lover’s lock of hair. And finally, keep the lights on during a family meal. If you turn off the light while anyone is still eating, there will be one less at the table before the end of the year!

So, there you have it. As you toast St. Patrick with Irish whiskey, consider what you’ve read and ignore it, if you’re so inclined. However, if you wake up with a hangover, I’ve got a great cure for that headache. Just don’t ask me where that sheet I gave you came from…

The Joys of Children in Church By Lisa S.T. Doss

There

was always a natural balance as I sat in a pew in church. Focused on the uplifting sounds of the choir and the church cadence, I often found myself smiling when an infant’s occasional cry or a small child’s overly loud question broke the rhythm of mass. My feelings changed when I became a parent.

It was now my child(ren) making those sounds that echoed throughout the church. I often apologized to the person seated beside us. Not everyone chooses to sit next to a family with young children. Church is about listening and responding, a quiet calm of serenity and prayer; however, to my surprise, time after time, I received words of appreciation from young couples to grandparents. My children, despite their sometimes less than perfect behavior, were introducing us to new people who were happy we were there, who understood why we chose to make it Sunday morning, despite our late arrival. Parents who take their children to church are making a difference in the lives of their children, and in the lives of the congregation. It is okay, parents.

Don’t wait until your children are older. You will be welcomed, and your children will blossom in amazing ways because of the influences and programs within the church community. Here are three perspectives, from a young married woman, a married man with children and a grandmother.

“There’s something wonderful about seeing children in church,” writes Emily Stevenson. “We already know what to expect from our youth ministry. My husband and I both grew up in our church.

We are delighted to hear the children’s voices in song, or smile as they perform, especially during the holidays. We notice the parents who come in, and they are preparing us. We see that it’s not easy to have children in church, but that’s okay. This generation of children is learning and singing songs, reciting prayers and

We feel the area is very safe for our kids. We also know our children are learning through a craft or organized lesson tailored to a Bible story. This time of education allows the kids to be occupied, while the adults are in the main service.”

Marcella Thomas shares, “Faith is believing. It is our answer to God’s call to know Him. People gather in church to be part of a Christian community of faith, prayer and service. For me, to see families with young children at church is good. A very young child is full of life, whether or not the sound is joyful. It is the parents who decide to be a part of God’s family. You choose to go, and you participate. You know where you want your children to be. We are sowing the seeds of God’s family. A thoughtful parent of a crying baby will make the right choice. In time, the child(ren) will acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation of worship.

Religion is a life experience. It is good to experience friendship, virtues, and charity, especially as a youth member.”

Any circumstance can delay parents while leaving their home on Sunday morning. Despite the challenges, it is important to expose God’s children to God’s people. Children are a blessing to the congregation and to the church. Go! While your children are sometimes listening indirectly, they are absorbing and learning the language of song, prayer and the messages of Jesus. When you are aware of the moment, the church IS filled with joyful noise.

It’s hard to believe that such a teeny-tiny thing can cause so many people so much misery! But, when you think about it, it’s often the little things in life that cause us the most stress.

Remember the book, “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and it’s all Small Stuff”? In it, the authors contend that most of the things that cause people to be stressed out are really pretty small problems that we blow out of proportion. Unfortunately, like spring air in the Triad, life is full of these tiny irritants. If we aren’t careful, they can build up, causing us major stress and unhappiness.

How do we avoid stressing out over life’s day-to-day problems? Richard Carlson, the author of “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff,” recommends that we focus on serving other people, avoid perfectionism and practice patience. I would also add that regular prayer is an important part of stress management. No problem is too small to take to God. Finally, remember this promise from Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV) “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Wallowing

By Tim Roberts - Pastor of Sunrise United Methodist Church in Lewisville heard her draw in a deep breath, just before she switched her Southern accent from a North Carolina flavor to now mimicking one of a Georgia belle, “That boy is a P-I-G, pig!” Knowing right off the bat that she was quoting a quite memorable line from the classic movie, Animal House, I looked around to see what unfortunate sap she was referring to. There was the girl sitting nearby with unkempt hair, but no, her gaze was not in this one’s direction. Maybe it was the studly man standing by the window, waiting to be seated. I studied him for just a moment, envying the chiseled jawline and assessing that he could be a brother of Ben Affleck. So no, she definitely wouldn’t be calling him a pig. I surmised if she had noticed him, she would have been salivating too much to think of him as a pig. So then, who could have raised her disdain? Finally, my gaze fell upon the toddler sitting at the next table. Of course! It had to be him. Though his back was to me, I quickly concluded that since he was about three, his eating skills probably have yet to be honed, and surely his face would be smeared with the peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich he was immensely enjoying. But alas, as I traced the trajectory of her gaze, I detected her swine detector alarm had not sounded because of this young lad; instead, it was transfixed on me! “Why me?!” I squealed. Then, in the lower periphery of my vision, I noted an orange hue emanating from the otherwise white shirt I was wearing. My head dropped in embarrassment. I should have known better. I know that it is nearly impossible for me to eat spaghetti without wearing some home. Not only was today not an exception to this fact, it was a day of abundant spillage. Although I had cleaned up and was presentable earlier, the P-I-G pig in me came out and there was no hiding any longer. I tried to cover my shirt with my jacket as I left the restaurant, intending to hold my head high as I walked past my accuser, but I was only able to snort and wallow off in misery.

found the primary reason for wallowing, or rolling in the mud, is for comfort and protection. It seems flies are attracted to pigs; maybe they like pork as much as the rest of us. They find a pig and they bite it. Of course, this hurts and irritates the pig, so it wallows in mud to soothe the sores and to help fend off the pesky flies from any more of their attacks. I began to see a bit of correlation there—when we wallow in pity, we are attempting to soothe our pain and fend off our attackers, too.

That’s human nature.

It is rather difficult to try to muster any sense of pride when your faults have been exposed. Most of us can rise above the moment, but when we have a moment to be alone, safe from any more ridicule or mockery, our wounded ego begins to writhe in agony and we wallow in our despair.

Wallowing isn’t always a bad thing. It can be soothing when we are sore and pestered by those little things that want to suck the life out of us. But when we do find ourselves in the muck and mire of distress, maybe it would behoove us to remember the pig. It doesn't stay in the mud; it emerges from it...and so should we.

Often, we are told to suck it up and get off our pity potty. But lately, I wonder, is it so bad to wallow for a while? Being a city boy and not knowing much about farming, I had to study a bit on why pigs wallow in the mud so much. Is it just because it is fun, and they like to be dirty and smelly? After a bit of research, I

We can find examples of some of our biblical heroes wallowing in their pity. Take for example, the plight in Psalm 42, which begins with these words: As the deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me continually, “Where is your God?” Those don’t sound like words from a self-assured person, do they? They sound more like the lamenting of one who has had more than his or her share of personal attacks and is wounded emotionally. As awful as these moments are, it is often in these moments that we find respite for our souls, as we pour out our heartfelt pain and emerge from behind the facade known as pride.

When channeled in the right direction, wallowing can be cathartic. Allowing ourselves to see that we aren’t as mighty and invincible as we would like to be, can be liberating. It frees us from the drudgery of feeling that we have to always be in control. It allows us to relinquish ourselves to the loving and merciful hands of God. The psalmist ends his lamentation like this: Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God. That sounds like someone who has purged their pain, has found hope and is ready to live life again.

Solus Christus/ Furniture Plus Thrift

By Justin Cord Hayes Christus is a nonprofit agency, funded in part by a thrift store, which has put 567 women on the road to addiction recovery since 2008.

Women as young as 16 and as old as 66 have found solace, safety and hope at the agency’s farm complex, which serves as a safe house for female addicts who have decided to leave behind their addictions. Solus Christus isn’t a rehabilitation center. Women who arrive there stay for a short time before the nonprofit’s staff sends them to a partnering Christianity-based rehab center. These partners are spread throughout the Southeast and beyond.

While at Solus Christus, women receive counseling and work on the property’s farm, doing everything from tending vegetables to helping shear alpacas. Although the agency’s farmhouse has room for up to twelve women at a time, Solus Christus tries to limit guests to eight, freeing up four beds for emergencies. Solus Christus resident director, Paula Borton, can’t believe herself how many folks have managed to be helped by the small nonprofit agency she runs with her husband, Randy, and a small staff. The name of the agency translates from the Latin to “Christ alone.”

In other words, the Bortons believe that only Christ can change lives for the better. “My husband likes to say that if the Lord had told us we’d be living with hundreds of addicts, we’d have been like Jonah and run in the other direction,” Paula Borton said.

The biblical Jonah, famously, tried to avoid God’s order to prophesize in Nineveh about that city’s imminent destruction. Jonah sailed in the direction opposite Nineveh, but he ultimately wound up being cast into the sea, swallowed by a whale (or possibly a big fish), and saved by God, who exhorted him—again—to head for Nineveh. The second time, Jonah did as he was told.

The Bortons didn’t need giant aquatic creatures to get their ministry started. All they needed to do was look out the door of their West End home. “We saw a man who appeared homeless, and he needed help,” Paula Borton said. “We brought him in, and, ultimately, he found the Lord.”

After working out of their home for a few years, the Bortons decided to create Solus Christus, make it a nonprofit, buy the farm property, and focus on ministering to the needs of

female addicts, because, Paula Borton explained, there are significantly more safe houses and rehab centers for men than there are for women.

Solus Christus, in part, supports itself via Furniture Plus Thrift in Pfafftown. Some may remember the thrift store’s original location on Broad Street in downtown Winston-Salem. The new location is much bigger, and the owner allows the Bortons to use the property rent-free, which Paula Borton calls “just a wonderful gift.”

The shop mostly avoids electronics and appliances, though it does sell clothes, books, knickknacks, and children’s items. Furniture Plus Thrift, as its name suggests, focuses on furniture. “We have had wonderful, brand-spanking-new furniture right off the showroom floor donated to us,” Paula Borton said. One hundred percent of the thrift shop’s proceeds benefit Solus Christus. You aren’t likely to find the Bortons at the shop, because they are focused on necessary work back at the farm.

You might, however, find one of the women who has been assisted working as a volunteer at Furniture Plus Thrift. “We’ve had women come through Solus Christus, go on to rehab, and come back to volunteer with us,” Paula Borton said. “They often stay for a year, volunteering.”

From Near and Far, from Here to There, Reading, Reading EVERYWHERE!

By Maria Glazener is the third month of the year, and you know what that means! Cats in tall hats and blue-haired things will be running amuck, while Mr. Brown Moos and Dogs Go and Go and Go! Not sure what the hullabaloo is all about? Well, read on!

NEA’s “Read Across America” is an annual reading program that motivates, and brings awareness to, the love of reading. This event asks for all children in all communities to celebrate reading on March 3rd.

For the past 15 years, children dedicate the day to the author Dr. Seuss and read, read, read! This all started in May of 1997, when a small task force at NEA(National Education Association) came up with a great idea to create a day for reading! They wanted kids to get excited about reading, and thought a great day would be the birthday of Dr. Seuss. And so was born on March 2nd, 1998, the largest celebration of reading this country has ever seen.

Many schools celebrate the day with festivities and parades, but the fun does not have to stop there! Here are a few ideas to keep the joy of reading alive and well in your household!

“The more that you read, The more things you will know, The more that you learn, The more places you’ll go.” ~Dr. Seuss Have your kids practice reading aloud daily. If they are shy, then have them read to their dog, or cat, or fish! The more they read out loud, the better their fluency! Better yet, take turns reading with your child; a chapter book can seem daunting, but having a partner to read with, if possible, provides quality family time and instills a love of learning in you both!

Create a Reading Café for the day. Create your breakfast, lunch or dinner menu off of favorite Dr. Seuss books. You can go for the obvious, Green Eggs and Ham, or, for a sweeter version, create sugar cookies with white-and-green food coloring to look like green eggs. Or go classic with goldfish for snacks like the book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and Hop On Pop(corn)! You can go wild and wacky with There is a Wocket in my (pita)Pocket, by filling mini pita pockets with cheese, or a favorite luncheon meat!

And the fun doesn’t, and shouldn’t, stop after March 3rd! Keep the joys of reading going all year long!

Book night: create a night or two each week where the family takes time to read together. Make sure each person of the family gets to choose a book to read.

Dr. Seuss lunch notes. Make up a rhyme or a short poem and put it in your child’s lunchbox; it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to come from you!

For older kids, hide them where they least expect it. Although they might not tell you, they are bound to enjoy it!

Spend the day trying to rhyme like Dr. Seuss. Pick a word and try to rhyme as many words as possible with it. Silly and made-up words DO count—what do you think makes Dr. Seuss so endearing?

Kids in the Kitchen Spring Edition are over the cold and ready for some fresh spring veggies. Get even those picky eaters to eat their vegetables by making these creative recipes. By letting the kids help with the cooking, they are more invested in the meal, proud of their work, and more likely to try it!

6 Shitake mushrooms 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce (or gluten-free Tamari sauce) 1 teaspoon rice vinegar 1 teaspoon sesame oil Directions:

BUTTERFLY SALAD Spring mix lettuce 2 cups red grapes 6 slices firm whole wheat bread 1 Tablespoon olive oil Directions: 1) Using a small butterfly- or bowtie-shaped cookie cutter (or scissors with the help of an adult), let the kids cut a butterfly shape from firm whole wheat bread.

2) Kids brush both sides of the bread with olive oil and toast until crisp, about 2 minutes 3) Let the kids tear four cups of lettuce.

4) With a kid-safe knife, kids can cut the red grapes into halves.

5) Serve with your favorite dressing on the side.

FRESH SPRING ROLLS & PEANUT SAUCE RECIPE Spring rolls are a delicious way to incorporate more veggies into our diet, especially if we’ve grown tired of salads. If Tamari sauce is used instead of soy sauce, then the recipe is glutenand dairy-free. Kids can help cut the veggies into matchsticks with kid-safe kitchen knives, do the measuring and help wrap the rolls.

1 package rice paper shredded cooked chicken (optional) Shredded lettuce Carrots—cut into matchsticks Cucumbers—cut into matchsticks Zucchini—cut into matchsticks Fresh mint or Cilantro

1) Let the kids cut the veggies into matchsticks using a child’s kitchen knife or table knife.

2) In a sauté pan, heat the oil on medium heat and toss in the mushrooms.

3) Let the kids measure out the brown sugar, soy sauce and vinegar for the adult to add to the pan.

4) Cook just until soft and toss with the sauce.

Set aside with the other veggies.

Peanut Sauce 1 cup creamy natural peanut butter 1 cup light coconut milk 2 Tablespoons lime juice 1 Tablespoon brown sugar 1 Tablespoon low sodium soy sauce (or GF Tamari sauce) 1 Tablespoon rice vinegar 1 teaspoon or 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 teaspoon fresh ground ginger Directions: 1) Combine the peanut butter and coconut milk in a sauce pan over medium low heat, stirring until smooth.

2) Add the remaining ingredients and cook for 5 minutes.

3) Place the veggies in the center.

4) Lift one side of the rice paper and roll it over, like a burrito, fold the edges in and continue to roll until sealed. Slice the rolls on the diagonal.

Serve with peanut sauce.

SPRING PEA & PARMESAN RISOTTO 2 teaspoons olive oil 4 shallots, chopped 1 pinch minced garlic 1½ cups Arborio rice 5 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1 cup frozen or fresh spring peas 4 Tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 Tablespoon butter 1 pinch sea salt 1 pinch black pepper Directions: 1) Over medium heat, warm oil in large saucepan. Add the chopped shallots and garlic and sauté until translucent.

2) Add the rice and cook for 2 minutes, stirring continuously.

3) Pour in ½ cup chicken broth and simmer on medium-low heat until the liquid is absorbed.

4) Continue adding chicken broth by the ½ cupful, stirring until the rice has absorbed the broth after each addition.

5) Fold in the peas and cook 2 minutes.

6) Remove the risotto from the heat and stir in the butter, Parmesan, salt and pepper.

To Wrap the Spring Rolls Directions: 1) Use a large pan, wider than the rice paper rounds, and pour in about one inch of hot water.

2) Place one sheet of rice paper into the water until it becomes soft and pliable. Remove the rice paper from the water and place onto a smooth surface.

All participating schools receive 50 passes to the Dash’s free MVP Day at BB&T Ballpark on Saturday, May 17th, 2014. “The Dash also set up an outing with each school for a Dash home game. For these games, all students and their families are able to purchase tickets at a discounted price. It is a great win-win for our local schools, students and for the Winston-Salem Dash organization,” stated Brian.

Most kids have an understanding of scoring by advancing around the baseball diamond in the game of baseball, and this idea is at the heart of getting local students to “knock it out of the park” with their academics.

“The Dash MVP Education Program is an incentive-based program that can be used to enhance any school subject’s curriculum and encourage extracurricular participation. As students achieve the goals that have been established by their teachers, they will advance
