Grocery Exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Winston- Salem Gets a Facelift.

By Kristi Johnson Marion “grocery store” exhibit at the Children’s Museum of WinstonSalem has gotten a Food Lion makeover and the results look delicious! “While the interactive grocery shopping exhibit has been a favorite with children across the board over the years, The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem has worked closely with Food Lion to make the space even better,” explained exhibit developer Traci Connor.

The

Grocery Exhibit Improvements Children are prone to spend a good deal of time in pretend-play grocery shopping and checking out “customers” in the exhibit. Parents can now enjoy a seating area and tables while their children linger. The new exhibit offers eight seats and will soon be fitted with booth seating.

Rather than plastic food, you’ll now find high quality (and absolutely adorable) felted wool tomatoes, hand-knit cupcakes and ice cream cones, felt carrots and fleece steaks to be “cooked, baked,” handled and sorted by children, worry-free. As always, the pretend food is sanitized often, assured Connor.

To reduce noise, the new exhibit set-up includes vibrant store banners hung from the ceiling. New cabinets of varying heights make the exhibit more accommodating for broader age groups.

Educating Through Creative Food Play The interactive exhibit teaches children healthy eating habits through their food preparation areas. There kids can stir fry vegetables in a wok; and through changeable food-sorting options doubling as clean-up for the area, children can sort foods into tubs for Carbs, Protein, Fruits and Vegetables, or by other options, such as by color.

The ice cream display prompts children to develop their mathematical skills with the sign that states: “Ice Cream Cones – 1 scoop $1, each additional scoop 50 cents.” At the seating area for parents are flat-screen 8 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

In conjunction with the new Food Lion grocery exhibit, the Children’s Museum is also launching its Inner Voice Initiative that celebrates “Confidence, Compassion & Choice to help children build self-esteem and confidence by making mindful decisions, and to encourage empathy and compassion for self and others.” The Inner Voice Initiative will bring food, wellness events and speakers to the museum, as well as select story times and crafts.

Food Lion Involvement The revamped exhibit is made possible by Food Lion and is based on the new Food Lion prototype stores; in fact, Clemmons residents may find it familiar, as it is very much like the new Food Lion grocery store in Clemmons, NC. “Food Lion is proud to launch this interactive exhibit for the community, where children can learn first-hand about what it’s like to be in a Food Lion grocery store,” said Allen Frost, Food Lion’s Director of Operations for the Winston-Salem area. “This exhibit will allow them to experience the everyday operations of a grocery store in a fun, interactive way.

The Winston-Salem franchise of Gigi’s opened on December 3rd and has already achieved remarkable success. In their first month alone, Gigi’s

sold over 16,000 cupcakes, ranking it in the top ten franchises, competing with locations in Atlanta, Denver and Nashville.

One reason for their success is due to the freshness of the product.

“Our cupcakes are made fresh daily,” said franchise owner, Kate Cooper.

“We are up baking and mixing between 5 and 6 a.m. every day.” Cooper, a veteran of the catering industry, is thrilled to share her skills with the local community.

Cooper originally began her career in catering by building a business behind her residence that could be used for catering private parties. While the flexibility of working from home was great for raising her three sons, Cooper now enjoys having an establishment where guests can visit the store whenever they like.

Monica Vallier, a partner of Community Taxes & Insurance and licensed Nationwide Agent, entered the industry with a business and finance background, along with a commitment to treating customers the way she would want to be treated.

“I believe insurance is a natural fit with my financial background. I am not intimidated by numbers, so I feel comfortable answering questions and explaining options to my customers. I remember how I relied on my insurance agent to make all of the decisions for us when insuring our first home, because I felt I didn’t understand, even with my financial experience. “I have a Masters in Business Administration from Rochester Institute of Technology in Upstate New York, with concentrations in Finance and Information Systems. I have worked as an accountant, auditor and financial analyst for several multinational corporations over the past 15 years. In 2009, I partnered with my brother, who has been in the tax business for years, opening Community Taxes & Insurance. Breast Biopsies – The Nitty Gritty

It is a fairly common, often feared, sometimes life-saving end result of the diagnostic breast imaging workup. In this article, I want to arm you with knowledge and second-hand experience. I want to give you confidence and allay your fears—just in case you should ever need a breast biopsy.

There are 3 major types of breast biopsies: sonographic (using US-guidance), stereotactic (using x-ray guidance), and MRI-guided.

Stereotactic and US-guided biopsies are by far the most common. In an US-guided biopsy, the patient lies on her back and the radiologist visualizes the breast lesion as he/she inserts a hollow needle through the lesion. Stereotactic biopsies are used for suspicious calcifications, or things not seen by ultrasound. In this procedure, the patient lies on her stomach on a table with a hole for her breast to hang through.

X-rays and a computer are used to “target” the area of interest for accurate biopsy. An MRIguided biopsy has a similar set-up, except contrast is injected into a vein to help locate the abnormality. In all types of image-guided breast biopsies, a hollow needle is inserted by percutaneous approach (through the skin) and short “spaghetti” strings of tissue are obtained and sent to the pathologist for analysis.

Breast biopsies should not be painful! In every type of image-guided breast biopsy, the skin and deep tissues of the breast are numbed with local anesthetic. This does sting and burn a little bit, for about 15 seconds. We use tiny needles to numb the breast and many patients do not feel anything, some feel a tiny prick.

Once we have numbed the breast, the patient should feel no pain at all. I always tell patients to speak up if they feel anything—we can always add more numbing medication.

Marking clips are an essential part of every breast biopsy. A tiny titanium marker is placed at the area of biopsy, right after samples are obtained. This is essential for two reasons.

Most importantly, the clip “marks” the area, in case the patient needs surgery for removal of more breast tissue (i.e., if cancer or atypia is found at pathologic diagnosis). This is especially important during a biopsy of suspicious calcifications; often all of the calcifications are removed at biopsy and the clip serves as the remaining landmark. Secondly, the clip marks benign findings, such as a fibroadenoma, so that future physicians will know that the lesion is benign and will leave it alone. This helps prevent unnecessary future biopsies and unnecessary surgery.

A mammogram is performed immediately following clip placement to document location in the breast.

About 2/3 of breast biopsies are benign. Given some overlap of benign and malignant findings at imaging, this is the goal. So, if you do need

After the biopsied breast tissue is analyzed by the pathologist, the radiologist (who performed the biopsy) reviews the results alongside the imaging to ensure that the results are concordant (accurate). We also issue a recommendation for further action (if any is needed). Biopsy results are tracked by the American College of Radiology at all accredited institutions.

You may be enrolling your preschooler in Kindergarten, looking at choices for high school, or even touring college campuses with your teenager. During the hustle and bustle of daily after-school activities, sports, homework, projects, birthday parties and appointments, our children quickly grow up.

As parents of a ten-year-old son, we’re starting to look at middle school options. It feels like yesterday that we were preparing for the first days of preschool and Kindergarten. Of course, he handled that first day of Kindergarten better than I did. I walked him to his classroom, kissed him good-bye, and then sat in my car crying and feeling an enormous loss. His baby and preschool years were officially over. I felt regrets and that mommy guilt many of us know quite well. Did I do enough? Could I have been a better mom while he was so little? Why didn’t I live more in the moment? Now his elementary years are quickly coming to a close, and I recognize the need to slow down, be more present and cherish the time.

As you drive from one activity to the next, turn off the radio, put down the cell phone, and talk with your child.

in need of a path for our life, many of us take one that we’ve known best. For Joseph Plitt, owner of Stratford Landscape Supply, when in need of a new direction, he looked to his teenage years of mowing his neighbors’ lawns.

Basically, Joseph hit the ground running, with a Subaru station wagon, a small mower and a company named J Landscaping.

“I didn’t really have any equipment, but I started small, putting fliers on mailboxes. With a Masters in Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpture, I can’t say that I ever saw myself in the landscape industry, but so far it’s been extremely rewarding,” said Joseph. It’s been a long road, with late days and lots of hard work, but things have gone well.

“When I started in 2004, I had no idea that the landscape industry had evolved to include such a wide variety of choices and designs for outdoor living. Not only the plants that are available, but the supplies that are used for fire places, fire pits and water features like fountains and ponds. We have come to specialize in the larger and harder-to-find plant materials. We are Winston-Salem’s largest supplier of natural stone and boulders; we also supply the community with landscape materials, shrubs, trees, perennials, annuals, stone, mulch, pine needles and fertilizer—are all part of what we offer. From Art Major to Landscaper…

A native of Clemmons, NC, Joseph Plitt grew up like many boys, complementing his studies by mowing his neighbors’ lawns on weekends; but his gift was as an artist. “After completing my graduate degree at Parsons School of Design in New York, my wife Chin Chin and I moved back to Winston-Salem. I worked in several jobs that really weren’t satisfying. In fact, I’d spent most of my life doing jobs that I didn’t enjoy; with landscaping, I enjoy being able to explore my creative side through landscape design and the freedom of being my own boss. It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do, finally, through the experience of the past nine years, I can say I have found my home,” commented Joseph. Since the beginning, Joseph and his company have come a long way.

One Yard at a Time J Landscaping, and now Stratford Landscape Supply continue to grow from the first few jobs he had in 2004. “As the company grew, so did the resources needed to get the jobs done. By 2006, and for the next two years, I had two crews working and business was steady. However 2009 was a different story, as we all remember. Work slowed, so I used my spare time setting up a propagation and shrub-growing facility at my home. I began by taking cuttings from available plants, eventually filling an area to produce 3000 plants a year. In 2009, I had hoped my investments would help reduce my material cost for plants, not knowing that eventually a store would open,” Joseph recalled.

A Good Crew Makes All the Difference Much of the success of Stratford Landscape Supply comes from having knowledgeable, trained professionals for any project.

“In order to give plants and shrubs the best start possible during planting, you have to know how to care for them, from pruning to disease prevention. Our greenhouse supervisor Danny Vega’s passion is taking care of the plants in the nursery, so they are ready to be a great addition to a customer’s landscape. We have masons, plant professionals, designers and a crew that works well together at the store and at customers’ homes. Having the right people in place means that I can provide a variety of solutions, from designing the most delicate of landscape plans to solving basic problems like drainage,” commented Joseph.

As the warm weather approaches, Joseph knows people will begin to get the urge to start planning ways to enhance their landscapes, from new hardscape additions to plants, to sprucing up with fresh mulch or pine needles. “Patios and outdoor kitchens continue to be very popular. Families are spending more time outdoors enjoying their yards, which often leads to the addition of a water feature or a fireplace or fire pit. Many people want an informal space where water, fire, cooking and play areas are all incorporated into a cohesive design, with plantings

situated for privacy and to bring color to an area. I enjoy working on creative landscape projects for homeowners, as well as helping them with their ideas,” Joseph stated.

Old Salem celebrates garden heritage by introducing the Homowo Harvest Collection, a unique offering of seeds from plants native to Africa and from plants traditionally associated with African Americans. Homowo (h ´- m – w ) is a word from Ghana, West Africa, which means “hooting at hunger.” The seed collection includes more than 45 heirloom vegetables, herbs and flowers that were growing in America by 1900.

This seed is all heirloom, open-pollinated and can be saved from yearto-year for planting and for sharing.

Mimi’s Purple Butterflies Honoring a Special Woman in a Very Special Way

By Carolyn S. Peterson pain of losing a loved one never really goes away; the ache remains for a lifetime, but we find ways to keep those we’ve lost close to our hearts, and hopefully find a way to make a difference in the world in their memory.

The

Ashley Stabolitis, wife, mom and math teacher at Summit School, of Winston-Salem, NC, lost her mother, Trish Westbrook, in 2009 to ovarian cancer; now she is honoring her mother’s memory and life in a very special way.

“My mom was an amazing lady who loved her children and grandchildren more than anything in the world. Her last days were spent in the care of the Palliative Care Unit nurses and physicians at Forsyth Medical Center. I was amazed at the love and care they showed my mom. One particular nurse was literally on her knees, holding my mom’s hands with me, comforting her as she struggled to pass on. The care they provided helped Mom pass on with dignity and without physical pain,” recalled Ashley.

After the loss of her mom, Ashley sought grief counseling at Hospice & Palliative CareCenter in Winston-Salem, NC. “My husband and I were my mom’s caregivers, so losing her left us with an empty feeling in so many ways. The counselors helped me work through my emotional pain,” Ashley said.

Having experienced the grief counseling services firsthand, Ashley knew the importance of the work that Hospice & Palliative CareCenter does in our community, so in her mom’s memory, she organized a team, Mimi’s Purple Butterflies, for The Hope Run in 2012.

For the Love of Mimi Grieving is a process, so when Ashley was at a point in her grief that she felt she was able to do something to honor her mom and give back in a way to help others, she decided that participating in The Hope Run, an annual race to raise funds to support the many services offered by Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, was the best way to do both. “I wanted to give back to Hospice because they did so much for me and my family after my mom’s passing. I think the name ‘Hope Run’ is so perfect, because Hospice gives you 36 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

hope that while you go through a devastating loss of a loved one, you are able to continue to live and be comforted by their eternal memory,” Ashley said.

Not only did Ashley form a team, but for her first year, it was a big team!

“Our team of 66 was comprised of family, friends and the Summit School community. I teach at Summit and community service is a significant part of our program. My students were excited to join the team and it meant so much to have their support, both in participation and donations. I was truly overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement with the turnout and raising almost $2400. After the race last year, I had many people reach out and say they wanted to be on our team in 2013, so this year I am aiming for a larger team. I am just now starting to put the team together, and hope we will have strong participation and raise even more for this great organization,” commented Ashley.

As Ashley thinks of this year’s team and the wonderful woman it honors, she has some thoughts on how her mom would feel, knowing about the way her family is remembering her. “I hope she is proud and knows how very much she is loved and missed. I think she will certainly be smiling as she looks down from heaven and sees all the ‘purple butterflies,’ wings on and ready to go, racing on April 13th,” Ashley said.

The one thing that sets this self-storage company apart from other traditional companies is that “We offer office suites,” explained Sylvia. “Unlike the storage units that are rented month-to-month, our office suites are with a lease,” she ended. The office suites are perfect for the small business owner and contractors who are just starting out or want to move their business out of their homes.

Moore Self Storage is offering a variety of specials to their clients today. “Right now, we are running 20% discount specials on all our climate control units at our Clemmonsville location,” said the Site Manager. In addition to the office suites, there are also optional garage storage units across the hall from the offices. “This can be especially helpful, in that many tenants will need extra space for files, furniture, equipment, etc. However, the garage units are optional and not included in the price, or as part of the lease,” said Sylvia.

Volleyball Community Comes Together for a Great Cause the smell of cut grass…the wind in your face—if you’re a volleyball player, by April you are itching for the opportunity to be out of the gym and onto the grass or sand courts. That is why so many players look forward to the Jerry Long YMCA’s annual Bash Before the Clash Volleyball Tournament, marking the transition from the indoor to the outdoor volleyball season.

History of the Bash

The tournament began four years ago as a fundraising event for the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign, which provides assistance for community members to be able to participate in programs such as summer camps, programs for cancer survivors, youth sports and more.

This year’s goal is to have the tournament generate about $8,000 in proceeds—almost double the previous year.

The Bash gets its unusual name because it is actually a warm-up tournament to another tournament, “The Clash,” played two weeks later in South Carolina. Both tournaments are for juniors and adults, and played three-on-three on grass courts.

Local junior, Sophia, played in last year’s tournament. “Playing in the Bash was exciting, because it was the first outdoor tournament of the season. I like three-on-three, because it is easier to cover the court than with two people, and fun to be outdoors with your friends,” said Sophia.

Volleyballers Unite!

Athletes are always uniting for a common philanthropic cause—and volleyball players are no different. The Bash Before the Clash brings the ever-growing volleyball community together for an opportunity to give back while playing the sport it is so passionate about.

Aside from being great for players, the tournament is a fun day for the family. YMCA members and the community at large are encouraged to bring their camping chairs and come watch the matches.

Most folks don’t know that volleyball was invented at the YMCA. When situations arise in the school community, parents tend to be curious about home schooling. While there are rewarding benefits for both the parent and the child, parents should extensively research the criteria involved in the yearlong commitment. Similar to a classroom teacher, parents would be responsible for maintaining a schedule, researching subject matter, planning lessons, and grading and testing, in addition to teaching. Parents have several options, such as creating a co-op situation with a neighboring parent, or including a spouse, especially if there is a passion for a particular subject. Capitalize on family or friends who could teach music, art or a language. Online programs are available for a cost if parents find themselves unable to teach, or need instruction for one particular subject. The support from the Home School Association is tremendous. Weekly meetings and discussions bring both parents and students together for a social and educational interaction.

Be forewarned, this endeavor is time-consuming. Shopping for schools is just as challenging as finding the right dress for an upcoming event. The time frame to secure an available spot quickly closes in public schools. It may be a prolonged process finalized next spring; none the less, take your time and be assured in your decision. Most often, the visitation process takes a full day; therefore, it is best to make a number of calls, before your child spends a day in a classroom, and talk to teachers and other students. If the preference is a private school, the visitation may also include being interviewed by an admissions team and testing. It is best for the student to see the school alive with the interaction of students in a classroom; therefore, begin searching now rather than waiting until summer. In addition, parents are more likely to secure a spot for next year.

Before Googling schools, I would recommend sitting down with your child and compiling a list of expectations. Within a school’s philosophy, consider the following options: the importance of religious education; the emphasis of music and art, or science and math; the value of athletics; college-preparation and/or special academic themes and programs.

Decide which two items on your checklist are most important and then begin your search. Include your child in the process as much as possible.

By having an unwilling child, the effort would be futile. The goal is to find the right school that will enhance your child’s developmental, social and educational growth.

Thinking Outside the Summer Camp Box! By Maria Glazener is that time of year when you start hearing the phrase, “What are your plans for the summer?” And automatically, you start rattling off the same thing you say every year. “Oh, we will probably stay around here, do a little swimming, maybe go to the beach or do a few camps.” And not too long after that, you will get out the calendar and sign up for the same camps that you always do, and before you know it, the summer will come and go as it always does, and it will be time for school to start again.

If your summer is starting to sound like one of those If You Give a Mouse a Cookie books, then it is time to try something different! It is easy to get into the same routine and fall into the same schedule every summer, but there are so many wonderful camps out there waiting for your child; isn’t it time to think outside the box?

Summer Camps are the perfect time for your child to try a new sport or craft. Camps are usually one week long and this is a great opportunity to dabble in something different. If you are worried about investing time and money for a year-round hobby, getting a taste of a new sport and trying a new activity during the summer is a great way to see if it is a good fit for your child. Summer camps are also great for meeting new friends, especially friends with the same interests as your child. Going to camps with old friends is great, but going on a new adventure can really open doors for your child. Here are a few tips to help you forge a new path into summer.

Don’t just think of camps as boy or girl camps. There are many science and math camps that girls would love to attend. There are also archery and sports camps that offer co-ed teams. Art/crafts and cooking camps are a great way for boys to explore their design and culinary side.

Give your child a voice. Ask, and actively listen to, what camps they would like to attend. Check out our camp guide or research camps online and spend time together, as a family, talking about the camps.

Let go a little. As kids get older, they want to start making their own decisions and trying their own things; resist the urge to tell them what camps they can attend and let them choose (within reason, of course).

Ask around. Ask friends or co-workers what camps their children have attended. You never know what great camp might be just around the corner from your house!

We all want our kids to have a great restful break for them and for us, but taking a new look at camps over the summer might just lead then on a new creative path that changes their life!

the search for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, to the mysterious small leprechaun that likes to pinch those not wearing his favorite color, there are lots of interesting myths and traditions that come with St. Patrick’s Day. However, before we all get ready to don our favorite green apparel, Forsyth Family has decided to delve deeper and investigate where these popular customs came from.

St. Patrick’s Day, also known as the “Feast of Saint Patrick,” is first and foremost a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on March 17th. This date marks the anniversary of St. Patrick’s death.

The holiday commemorates the saint (c. A.D. 387– 461), who is credited with helping bring Christianity to Ireland. Observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church, the holiday was first made an official “feast day” in the early seventeenth century, yet later became synonymous with the celebration of Irish culture in general.

Little is documented on the early life of the saint; however we do know that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century to a wealthy RomanoBritish family. Both his father and grandfather served in the Christian church. At the age of sixteen, St. Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave. This was where he lived in captivity, somewhere on the west coast of Ireland—possibly Mayo—for a number of years. It is said that the saint received a call from God in a dream to flee his captors and return to Britain. He accomplished just this, and after returning joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul, studying to become a priest.

It would be years later, in 432, that St. Patrick was called again back to Ireland, although this time no longer traveling as a slave, but a bishop. It is recorded in Irish folklore that the saint used the shamrock to explain the doctrine of the holy Trinity to the Irish people. After over thirty years of teaching evangelism, the saint died on March 17th, 461, and was buried at Downpatrick.

Now that we know a bit more about the saint that this Irish holiday celebrates, where did all of the St. Patrick’s Day traditions and myths come from?

First off, the color that St. Patrick was associated with was actually blue. However after years of many people wearing green shamrocks as a way to commemorate the saint, eventually the official color of the holiday began to change. Today, green colors everything that comes with this holiday; from the clothes that children wear in honor of the holiday, to the shamrocks that decorate the

parades, to the beer that celebrators drink.

Another tradition that comes with this holiday is the custom of pinching those who are not wearing green. This tradition is thought to have first become popular in the early 1700s. It was developed as a reminder to others that if they didn’t wear this lucky color, they were going to be sought out by leprechauns. These small mythical men, an image also associated with the holiday, were said not to be able to see green. This said, those who wore green were invisible to the pint-sized men.

The folkloric translation of leprechaun is “lobaircin,” or “small-bodied fellow.” Stemming from the Celtic belief that these tiny men or women could use their magical powers to serve good or evil, many Celtic folktales paint them as cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. The small figures are known for their tricks, which they often used in order to protect their treasure. While not officially associated with the holiday, after Walt Disney released a film in 1958 called Darby O’Gill & the Little People, Americans began to connect the grouchy little man of Irish folklore with the holiday. Today the small figure is an easily recognizable fixture of the holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day is also a huge celebration in many U.S. cities. This began thanks to the rich Irish patriotism among the American Irish immigrants who came to the U.S. to live. Many societies were started, such as the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and Hibernian Society, to give these immigrants “Irish Aid.” These groups were responsible for putting together the celebrations and parades, which today have become incredibly large.

One such parade, the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, was begun in 1848 and today is the world’s oldest civilian parade, alongside the largest parade in the U.S., with over 150,000 participants.

This year, over 3 million people are expected to watch the 1.5-mile parade procession through the Big Apple. Other cities celebrate the holiday, including Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Savannah. These cities bring in between 10,000 to 20,000 participants each. In Savannah, rumor has it that in 1961 a hotel restaurant manager named Tom Woolley convinced city officials to dye Savannah’s river green. Considering it didn’t turn green but a slight yellowish hue, they never did it again. However, the river in Chicago has been turned green for a number of years. Since 1962, the river has been dyed a vibrant green color, by use of vegetable dye, to celebrate the holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day will continue to be a holiday celebrated and loved by not only the Irish, but by the Irish at heart. Now that we understand where some of these traditions originated, we can all put on our green attire and raise our glass of green beer with knowledge of why we are doing so this year!

to South and Central America to work with orphans and at-risk kids. While she has no problem recruiting kids, young adults and women to go on these trips, she often struggles to find men who want to come along.

She asked one of her male friends why he has never gone on one of her trips. He said that he really struggled with the thought of going, because he could not “fix” the problems he was certain to encounter in these children’s lives. In other words, he might be able to go and help with some light construction or painting, or other odd jobs, but when he left, these children would still be living in poverty I get that. I think that we all, men in particular, feel the need to finish what we start. It is tough to visit hurting children, look into their eyes and see Jesus, and then leave them knowing that their physical situation has not really changed; knowing that you haven’t “fixed” their problems. But, that’s our own logic, not God’s.

God tells us that “pure and undefiled religion is to look after orphans and widows in their distress,” (James 1:27). He never commands us to solve their problems…or, anyone’s problems, for that matter.

However, it is in the midst of those situations which we cannot “fix” that our love and service is needed the most.

The Wisdom of Friends

35 Paul and Barnabas stayed on in Antioch, teaching and preaching the Word of God. But they weren’t alone. There were a number of teachers and preachers at that time in Antioch. 36 After a few days of this, Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back and visit all our friends in each of the towns where we preached the Word of God. Let’s see how they’re doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John along, the John nicknamed Mark. 38 But Paul wouldn’t have him; he wasn’t about to take along a quitter who, as soon as the going got tough, had jumped ship on them in Pamphylia. 39 Tempers flared, and they ended up going their separate ways: Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus; 40 Paul chose Silas and, offered up by their friends to the grace of the Master, 41 went to Syria and Cilicia to build up muscle and sinew in those congregations. – The Message you ever thought you knew what was best? Of course, you have; we all have.

It is human nature to think that what we know is, at least for a moment, the best course of action.

Sometimes, while driving in an unfamiliar part of the country, I will forgo the directions that are given to me by my GPS, especially when I can see my destination. Sometimes, I am right, but not all the time. I have found myself on more than one occasion

Of course, thinking we know best isn’t just relegated to our navigational skills. It encompasses so much more. I cannot begin to think of the times, when I was much younger, friends warned me that the relationship that I was in was the wrong one. Call it love or infatuation, it does not matter; I was blind.

I thought I knew best and found myself hurt and wounded later. The funny thing was that I often wondered why no one told me this would happen.

Often our pride and/or our heart get in the way of reason and common sense. We will go against the grain of wisdom from family, friends, and colleagues, hoping for the chance to prove them wrong.

Sometimes we prevail, but most often, we wind up wondering where we went wrong.

The Scripture passage above tells of a similar account between two of the early church leaders. Paul and Barnabas had been tight in their mission of spreading the good news about Jesus. They were successful and wanted to ensure that their message

was remaining entrenched in the hearts of those they spoke to earlier. But, as they made plans to return to the cities that they had previously visited, they reached an impasse about who would accompany them. Barnabas chose someone who had deserted them earlier. He missed out on acquiring the basic first-hand knowledge that the early church required.

Paul and Barnabas argued vehemently about this and decided to part company. Paul took with him the man who had the blessing of the church leaders, and his ministry is recorded as being exceedingly fruitful.

Barnabas, while still trying to accomplish the same goal, followed his own ambition and went against the wisdom of his friends and colleagues. This is the last account recorded of Barnabas in this book.

Maybe there is a lesson to be learned here. In my faith tradition, we are to temper our decisions based on Scripture, reason, experience, and tradition.

I believe that second part includes the wisdom imparted to us by our friends. Sometimes, our way is best, but we should always weigh others’ views and insights. After all, friends are gifts from God.

The Six Requirements of Driving/Walking with God

In

John Owen’s (“The Puritan’s”) book, Communion with the Triune God, he gives a list of the six requirements for walking with God. This amazing list, I feel, would be useful to apply to our daily driving. Some would say “God is my Pilot,” others, “God is my Co-pilot”; rather than argue that, what a joy to see how we can use this wisdom individually to grow in our Christian salty, lightness.

So, Robby, are you saying I need to read the Bible to drive with God? Yes, some of the best advice I have ever received in my 57 years was by Norman Vincent Peale, who instructed me to get up an hour early every morning to read the Bible and pray for wisdom to understand it. With that, I began more and more to discern the Voice of Truth and found it called out to me much more than I ever knew, and yes, even while driving.

1. Agreement

3. A Way, a Path a Road

As our puritan teacher instructs, the prophet Amos made it simple. Amos 3:3: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?”

Yes, if you are driving, you need a way, a path, a road; this is so cool, I can’t wait to share it. Stay with me now, and it will sink in. Hebrews 10:20, “By a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh.” Jesus Himself said it in John 14:6. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The part of this Todd Clark, one of the hosts of “The Masculine Journey Radio Show,” awakened in me lately, was that Jesus is the way to where? Jesus is the way to the Father.

That being said; can two drive together unless they are agreed? So, what is the agreement? Do we agree that Jesus died for us and now lives in us? If you believe that, you are driving together, whether you are conscious of it or not.

Simple enough. I do like the way John Owen points out that it’s Jesus’ blood that is the point of agreement; with it, the other five points can work; without it, we are both as lost on earth as behind the wheel. L.O.S.T.—Living and driving Out of Self-Centered Thought.

So, can we agree, we need to drive with God? 2. Acquaintance Simply put, how can we receive driving suggestions if we don’t know His voice? John 10:27: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” How cool is that, the God of the universe talks to me even when I’m driving.

The challenge is, how can I distinguish His voice from all the other voices calling out to me? To quote a very cool song, His is “The Voice of Truth.”

Then, where do we find the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth? Ah, yes, the Bible. Our Pastor, Dr. Mark Corts (now gone to be with The Lord), once made a graphic illustration that really helped me understand this concept.

Pastor Corts asked a little boy to come up on the stage from the congregation.

He then instructed the little boy to put on his suit jacket. With that accomplished, he asked the little boy to speak to the people like he thought Pastor Corts sounded. Then Pastor Corts asked, how many think this little boy is me? Obviously, no one raised their hand—he was a complete fraud. Pastor Corts went on to say, that’s because you know my voice, my mannerisms and my heart. Now, where can you get to know God’s heart and mannerisms, and how He speaks to us? The Bible is the place where we know we are hearing God’s voice, His Heart and His mannerisms.

So, Robby, now you are telling me that the road I’m driving is supposed to lead to Father God? By George, I think you’ve got it! The way John Owen put it is unforgettable: “Any step that is taken in any way, by strength that is not immediately from Christ, is one step toward hell.”

Let’s look at it in another light. Say, you take off on your way to work and while driving along, the driver behind you starts tailgating you.

Personally there is no way in my own strength I can fight it bothering me, and any second I spend letting it bother me is taking away my peace. “Help me, Jesus; guide me with Your Holy Spirit. This is really ticking me off, Lord. Give me wisdom; lead me to the Father’s Love.”

When He answers that prayer, I am now headed in the Right Direction, regardless of the circumstances.

Do not think that I am not a hypocrite for one second; my children or those who know me well, know I struggle here. The cool thing is that in that struggle, I find the end of myself quickly, knowing I got to, got to have Him. I have to have His wisdom. Jesus is, in fact, the way to the Father. When we are resting in the Father’s Love…”YOU HAVE NOW REACHED YOUR DESTINATION”…I’m telling you.

4. Strength / Horsepower If you wanna go anywhere, you gotta have horsepower, right? Here, again, this leaves me right where God wants me: understanding my powerlessness,

Romans 5:6. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

The more I ponder the point, the more I understand. Driving without God is pointless, like a one-Robby-power Dilmore mobile, verses strapping myself to a Zillion Billion horsepower Super Sonic Screaming Royal Mega Coach. Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Real Encounters.

With His horsepower, the enemy has to flee, leaving the road safe ahead.

5. Boldness This morning, I looked up the definition of boldness on my Kindle, and the quick definition was: “showing an ability to take risks.” Wow, any relationship is risky, but in a relationship with God, you could be a crispy critter in a millisecond; just ask Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu. Driving with God could be a risky business.

The good news is, here again, Jesus is willing to provide the needed ingredient (Ephesians 3:11-13), according to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord, “in whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him. Therefore, I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.”

Many, many times I have lacked boldness to do what God has asked, when it comes to driving. Letting that guy merge could really upset the people behind me or other passengers. Or, driving the speed limit may upset both others driving, or the folks that are waiting on me at my next appointment. But this is where one of my favorite Bible verses kicks in: 1 John 4:18, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

Boldness, risk-taking bring our heart alive; hiding in fear is where I find myself too often, so once again I run out of myself and have to call on Jesus. There is no “Life in The Fast Lane,” without boldness…but that doesn’t mean speeding. Jesus wouldn’t. “Life in the fast Lane” is how I feel when I know God has us helping avoid an accident, or providing someone with a much needed break.

6. Destination No sense riding with someone headed somewhere you don’t want to go. This may be the coolest part of riding with God. The destination defies your wildest imagination, I promise; but more than that, it is the Ultimate “YES!” 2 Corinthians 1:20: “For in Him, every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes.’ For this reason, it is through Him that we say the ‘Amen’ to the glory of God.” The destination is God’s Glory. Now, take a breath and think about that!

God’s glory can lead to stuff like raising folks from the dead, as Jesus did with Lazarus, John 11:4: “But when Jesus heard it, he said, ‘This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’”

I mean, just ask Ezekiel, “God has a great set of Wheels, don’t you know?” Driving with God, we are going to see things, feel things, experience things that the rich and famous, the powerful muckety-mucks will marvel at…“was that really Billy Bob driving with the Big Guy?” You know, when you drive with God, folks can’t help but notice!

Last year about this time, St. John’s Lutheran School was sending up prayers for an answer to a fundraising dilemma: the school needed a new bus. Parent Shannon May was praying too and God sent her the response that St. John’s ultimately heeded: hold a Christian music concert. This concert – called Ignite – was a blessed success.

Even though St. John’s has reached its goal for the bus, the school felt like the concert was so welcomed by the community that it decided to do the it again this spring. School PTO President, Rob Maltzahn, shared why they decided to make Ignite an annual event: “Ignite was such a hit last year that many of the attendees and artists asked if we would do it again.”

Rob added, “Last year, we were raising money for a new bus for St. John’s. Since we’ve already reached that goal, this time Ignite is less about the fundraising and more about bringing the community together to continue sharing their faith through great music.”

The community embraced Ignite; parents and children from the school, the church, other church youth groups and the community turned out to hear great music from aspiring young musicians from the area. A crowd of 650 is expected for this year’s concert. Aside from music, attendees can share a meal and most importantly, share their faith. Everyone in the community is welcome.

Last year, we ignited the spark – this year, we’re fanning the flame!

Katelyn graced the Ignite stage last year and returns with her husband, Derek. Katelyn is a former American Idol finalist who also sings Country music. an earlier article, we shared an opportunity for our readers to provide positive encouragement and inspiration to survivors of domestic violence through a young lady’s Girl Scout initiative. Caroline, a high school junior, is continuing her work on her Girl Scout Gold Award.

Her project is the goal of putting together a book of letters, e-mails and comments from our community as a means of providing positive feedback and hope to those dealing with domestic violence. She has also enlisted her Writing Club, Girls’ Service Club, and National Art Honor Society in providing quotes and artwork for the project.

As a reminder: Domestic violence is not limited by demographic class, educational level, age, economic condition, or gender. It’s not just broken bones, bruises, blackened eyes—control and psychological battering are just as devastating. In her comments below, Caroline reminds us that domestic violence is not just a national issue, but affects communities on many levels.

Domestic abuse is an under-the-radar issue in our community; it’s very serious, though, and extremely sad. Domestic violence took the lives of 68 women in North Carolina in 2011, and in our county there have been three domestic violence homicides and 244 domestic violence incidents where children were involved. It takes a lot of courage for the women suffering abuse to pick up and leave their homes, and it is especially difficult when they are accompanied by children. These women deserve a support group, people who can give them comfort and encouragement.

I've seen the impact just a few words can have on a person, and I believe that a collection of inspirational quotes and consolation, letters of encouragement from women, letters from battered women to other battered women, and stories of overcoming unfortunate situations would help to raise the spirits of those staying at the shelter.

Words are so powerful; through words we can make a world of difference, we can share uplifting personal stories, give encouragement and support, hope, advice and wisdom. We can be connected through the words we share; and, we can feel united through thought and sentiment. Through the written word we realize that we are not alone in what we think and feel, although every story, poem, and quote means something different to each individual.

Radical Faith and Hope Ministries

some point, we all need a little help. Some people can find the support they need in family and friends, some find it through treating themselves with shopping excursions or spa visits, some ignore the issues and hope the stress will go away on its own, and some need help from other sources, but are not always sure where to look.

At

Luckily, for many of those in the last group, there are people in our community who are willing to help without asking for anything in return.

In May of 2011, John and Maria Toomey founded Radical Faith and Hope Ministries (RFHM). “Our ministry is primarily focused on the unemployed and underemployed,” said John Toomey, Lead Pastor at RFHM. “However, we do and will serve anyone who is struggling in these uncertain times.

We have lots of free resources available to anyone, no questions asked. All you have to do is contact us! However, I must point out that we cannot give out money to anyone, regardless of his or her circumstances. We do not even get paid for what we do, so we maintain full-time secular employment.”

The ministry as well as Toomey’s pastoral license and credentials are provided by Freedom Ministries Alliance, so he is fully trained and able to handle the concerns of those in need. “Our heart's desire is for people to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ,” said John. “We also desire to see the restoration of hope and faith to those who have lost hope for a better tomorrow. We want people to re-gain their hope and faith that things will get better!”

Though the root of RFHM is based on religious beliefs, those without faith can still receive help. “If you are not religious, you will not be turned away,” said John. “Our free resources are available to anyone, but we do emphasize that one needs to [have] a knowledge of Jesus Christ to truly be fulfilled in life. This is the first focus of our ministry, in addition to other resources. We are also available to anyone who simply needs prayer, or to talk to someone who can relate to what they are going through and help them.”

Perhaps the greatest drive for the Toomey’s is their deep-rooted belief in their faith and the good they are doing in the community. “Maria and I believe in what we are doing, because we have experienced the hopelessness and heartache that unemployment can bring on a family first-hand,” said John.

“We also know from experience that the only way to get through and move on from such heartache is to completely trust and give your life over to Jesus Christ. He is our hope in tomorrow. We want to be the hands and feet of Jesus to everyone we encounter.

For those who are struggling to handle daily stresses on their own, Radical Faith and Hope Ministries can provide assistance. “Please, do not hesitate to reach out for help if you or someone you know is in need,” said John. “We keep everything confidential and will never embarrass anyone.”

ONE FORSYTH FATHER

like a lion, out like a lamb.” This timeless phrase is tied inextricably to our present month. We can gather from this that March seems to be a two-faced month and isn’t quite sure what it wants. It sweeps in full of fury with still some profound chill to the air and then starts to calm itself and blossom into real live spring. We can smell the warmer days right around the corner, and the tangy spirit and bounce of a new sunshiny season.

Much like this unsure month of March, fatherhood has multiple faces, as well. I’ve never been more complex than I am as the stay-at-home dad of a soon-to-be 3-year-old. I have never been so focused, loving, hyper-vigilant, full of ritual and habit, and yet so uncoordinated, deaf, dumb and blind at the same time.

I was recently shopping at the grocery store. I selected a frozen pizza, read the label and thought it unique and intriguing that Christian references were front and center in the labeling of my humble pizza.

“Rising Christ” pizza was something that I hadn’t seen before, and it took me aback for a split second. Then I realized I was purchasing “Rising Crust” pizza. I need help.

I ignore all the Groupons I receive for flying lessons, zip lining, hot air balloon rides or any other thrill-seeking pursuits. What do I need with those when I am the father of a toddler? As a father, I find that life is a roller coaster unto its own. I can be so frustrated and so completely in love all at once. My son brings a smile to my face constantly, and by the same token, as I mentioned in last month’s article, the pleas of “Why?!” do not cease. And that does not bring a smile to my face.

It’s been said that anyone conducting an interview should ask people open- ended questions, so they will give you a full answer and not just answer with a simple “Yes” or “No.” My baby boy is going to be a superstar as a journalist or human resources director, since he insists that I offer more than one-word answers to well, anything at all.

Here—I invite you to look at a typical exchange: “Dada, what’s her name?’ referring to a stranger passing on the street.

“Her name is Claudia, Baby,” Daddy lies, making up a name, thinking that will end it.

“Why, Daddy, is she Claudia?”

“Well, because, my love, that’s her name,” I say with the perkiness in my voice fading.

“But why?!” exclaims my relentless inquisitor.

“Oh, it’s just her name, Baby,” I say, as the blood rises to my cheeks and I get flush with exasperation.

Pause. “But, Dada, where she going?”

“Oh! She’s gotta go to work today.”

“But why, Daddy, does she go to work?!” and so it goes.

My son flies high on the swing of extremes, as well, with wailing pronouncements of wanting to play soccer “right now!” and pitching a fit because it’s 34 degrees and the sun has gone down and we cannot play soccer right now. And then, as if nothing has transpired, he suddenly comes to me contrite and full of renewed patience for his Old Man with “I sorry, Daddy.”

It seems that even the most popular television shows that depict parenting now gravitate towards storylines where the bliss and chaos ebb and flow. These shows use brilliant comedic timing to show the harrowing fright fest that parenting can be and then circle back around to close typically with a heart-warming message, saying that we parents wouldn’t have it any other way. They are so right.

Well, maybe just for an afternoon we would take a clean floor, clean walls, zero back talking on behalf of baby, or parent for that matter, or finicky eating. But I believe that, if parenthood were perfect and harmonious all the time, it wouldn’t be real—nor would it be exciting.

Without the fervor and the messiness of it all we would simply exist and not truly live with full pockets of stories, anecdotes or memories that stick. And then, for heaven’s sake, where I would be with this column?

What Happened to the Mr. and Mrs?

How are you?” Since I am notorious for being terrible at names, faces and sometimes even voices, I paused as I frantically tried to figure out who this person was. I don’t get a lot of calls to my house phone—most people who know me personally call my cell phone (except for my own mom, of course).

So was this a friend of mine? Possibly a neighbor?

A mother to one of my child’s friends?

A TMoM client? After what seemed like a very long, awkward moment, I replied with fake enthusiasm, “I’m good! How are you?” At which point the caller replied, “I’m good. Can Emily talk?”

it’s not something I needed to get used to for my sake, but for my kids’ sake. I will admit, though, it wasn't so easy for me. I kept wanting to call my child’s preschool teacher “Mrs. So-and-So,” instead of “Miss This” or “Ms. That.” But now, I actually prefer using “Miss First-Name” much more than “Mrs. Last-Name”…it just seems more natural.

Today, whenever I meet a child, I always say, “Please just call me ‘Miss Katie.’” And if that child is older (like high school or college), or someone I know well (no matter their age), I say, “Just call me Katie.” My husband and I have never enforced the use of “Ma’am” or “Sir” (not that we don’t like those titles; we’ve just rarely used them ourselves). We do try to remind our kids to use some type of “title” in front of an adult’s name—especially if that adult is not someone we know particularly well—or if it’s someone in authority (like a teacher).

To us, it’s just simple manners and respect.

Really?

Yet, this wasn't a call for me—this was one of my seven-yearold daughter’s friends. I barely know this girl, yet she was talking to me like we were best buds. On a firstname basis. My jaw dropped. I was floored!

If this is not a big deal to you, it was to me. I grew up in the Northeast in the ‘70s and ‘80s where everyone my age called adults by either “Mr. or Mrs.” I remember my parents’ good friends telling me on my wedding day (the day I turned into a “Mrs.” myself) to please start calling them by their first names. I think I did that once—giggled like a school girl—and never did it again. It just felt wrong, weird and disrespectful, even though I know it wasn't. I’m a grown woman—for crying out loud— why was that so hard for me to do?

I’ve now lived in the South for nearly 18 years and have adjusted to the whole “Miss Katie,” “Ms. Katie,” and “Ma’am” scene. Obviously 76 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

So, when I answered the phone and heard “Hi Katie” coming from a little child’s voice—a child I don’t necessarily know very well—I was completely thrown off. I’m just now warming up to the reality that the phone sometimes rings for my daughter. But when I heard the casual first-name basis used to greet me—as if this child were an adult herself—I was in disbelief. I didn’t like it.

Forsyth Creek Week: Fun for the Whole Family

By Frank Elliott for crawfish, spying herons in the wild, the thrill of catching that first fish: the first-ever Forsyth Creek Week, coming March 16–23, will offer these and many more family-friendly opportunities to celebrate and enjoy our local waterways.

Checking

Forsyth Creek Week, organized by local agencies and sponsored by North State Environmental, offers a full week of fun, educational and hands-on activities for all ages and interests. The schedule includes events for bird watchers, anglers, film buffs, book lovers, shutterbugs, do-it-yourselfers and more.

Special emphasis has been put on kid-friendly activities. On Saturday morning, March 16th, the town of Kernersville will sponsor a Creek Week fishing contest at Century Park Lake for children up to age 12 with an accompanying adult.

There will be prizes, games, refreshments and giveaways for all ages. Go to www.toknc.com for more details. Another fishing derby, for ages 13 and up, will be held that morning at Salem Lake.

Creek crawls, also on Saturday at Tanglewood Park, Salem Lake and Salem Creek, will give young and old a chance to learn about the critters that inhabit our local creeks and streams, and what they say can tell us about water quality.

On Sunday morning, March 17th, Forsyth Audubon members will lead bird walks along the Muddy Creek and

Salem Creek greenways and at Tanglewood Park.

Bring binoculars, if you have them, but the leaders will have a couple pairs that are just the right size for young naturalists. Shutterbugs of all ages can also submit photos to the Creek Week photo contest.

For preschoolers and toddlers, the libraries in Lewisville and Kernersville will feature waterthemed story times during Creek Week. Also at the libraries during Creek Week, youngsters can visit Mudpuppy Pond at the Rural Hall branch.

Older kids and home-schoolers can see how our activities affect water quality with the Enviroscape at the Central library. And the Kernersville library will offer a special Creek Week craft hour for kids 11 and under. For adults, there will be free films, a book discussion, demonstrations of the rapidly

growing sport of kayak fishing, a fly-fishing workshop, workshops on building rain barrels and backyard stream bank repair, and more.

Forsyth Creek Week was instigated by Roseann L’Esperance, the Senior Community Educator for Winston-Salem’s Stormwater/Erosion Control Department, after reading about Durham Creek Week, which is in its fourth year. “We were looking for a fun and positive way to encourage people to appreciate and protect our water supplies,” Roseann said. In all, 15 government and private agencies cooperated in organizing Creek Week. “We want folks to appreciate just how lucky we are to have so much water in Forsyth County—so many creeks and streams,” Roseann said. “I’m just really excited that we are going to have this wonderful opportunity to enjoy all these awesome uses of our water.”

are magical. There is nothing like holding one, turning the pages and being whisked away to wherever the author’s words carry us. For most of us, this experience begins when we are children, and our parents read us a bedtime story. We continue this love affair into adulthood. We look forward to new books from our favorite writers, the latest best-sellers, and to re-reading the classics. It is also a joy to share our novels and opinions with friends. We form clubs to discuss, explore and sometimes get a totally different viewpoint of a chosen book. Beyond the words, the socialization is a great way to enjoy the selection.

Books

Sometimes, people with disabilities are excluded from certain opportunities due to the lack of an organization that could meet their needs. Fortunately, a book club is no longer one of them.

“The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) program was founded in 2002 by Dr. Tom Fish and his colleagues at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center to provide people with developmental disabilities opportunities to socialize in their communities and to read and learn together,” said Deborah Woolard from the Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network (PDSSN). “Currently, there are more than 180 NCBCs located in 22 states and five countries. The originators’ initial plan was for the club to meet monthly to listen to an audio book and have reading specialists available. They quickly learned that was not what the members wanted. They wanted to be with their book club friends every week, they wanted a book in their hands, and a reading expert was not needed, since the goal was not primarily literacy."

After learning about the program and finding there were no clubs in Winston-Salem, Woolard set out to change that. By April of last year, with help from the PDSSN, a large number of people had been trained as coordinators with the goal of having NCBCs throughout North Carolina. Each club meets once a week for an hour. There are clubs for teens aged 13–17 and adults 17 and older. The members choose which book they will read and how

their club will be structured. Typically, a book takes three months to read. Facilitators are volunteers who have gone through an orientation.

“Our first book club started in May at Barnes & Noble,” said Woolard. “That club has nine members and four facilitators.

Our second book club meets at iHop in Clemmons and has six readers and four facilitators. We are getting ready to start a new club in King, and two members of the original club will be moving to the King club. We appreciate community businesses offering such welcoming locations for our weekly clubs and would like to acknowledge them. Anyone with a desire to learn and make friends is welcome to join the book clubs, regardless of his or her reading and language abilities. Everyone participates with whatever support they need. Some of our members are independent readers, and others use echo reading while developing new skills. Many of our members enjoy helping others in the club, and all are encouraged by the achievements of their fellow members. [Members] enjoy having an opportunity to be together every week; reading together helps them maintain or expand their reading ability. The facilitators help them learn the meanings of new words and stop frequently to summarize and discuss what they are reading.

For many of our readers, comprehension is more difficult than reading the text.”

Members of NCBCs “... have the same interests in making new friends and reading and talking about books together as their non-disabled peers,” said Woolard. “Our members and facilitators feel joy every time they come together to read or celebrate their accomplishments. They look forward to sharing updates on their lives with their friends during the first few minutes, and then delve into their books. They share life experiences as they relate to the novel and assist each other when words are mispronounced. The hour passes very quickly, and everyone leaves looking forward to the following week.

HORIZONS RESIDENTIAL CARE CENTER… A Past, Present and Future of Caring For Kids

But it exists just north of Winston-Salem. This is the home of children and adults ... people who laugh, learn and can teach us more about ourselves than anyone could ever teach them. Love grows here as unconditionally as the trees reach to the sky.

This is Horizons Residential Care Center… a facility designed for people with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities. Horizons is one of five facilities like it in North Carolina, and the people who work and volunteer here provide compassionate care for the exceptional people who call it home.

The Horizons property began life in the early 1900s as the Memorial School, an orphanage and school for African-American children. After the school closed, members of the Junior League of Winston-Salem dreamed of turning the facility into what it is today. This is the setting and history that acts as the backdrop for Horizons Memorial, a play written by awardwinning playwright Samm-Art Williams. “There is tremendous historical significance of the property, not only to the African American community, but our society,” said David Adams, Horizons’ Chief Executive Officer.

The play, which will premiere Friday, March 22, at the Arts Council Theater on Coliseum Drive in Winston-Salem, highlights the considerable impact of the property as seen through the eyes of people who lived there as orphans and those who work and live there now. The Board of Directors for Horizons and the North Carolina Black Repertory commissioned Williams to write this play to commemorate Horizons’ 40th Anniversary.

Williams is originally from Burgaw, N.C., and he has a long resume featuring acting roles, and producing TV shows and Broadway plays.

Broadway veteran Mabel Robinson, a Tony Award nominee, and an internationally known actress, choreographer and director, is directing the play.

Two cottages and a large bell that rang for classes and to summon children for meals stand as reminders of the property’s original residents.

The Atrium building is the primary residence and school for the children who live there now. Most residents have multiple diagnoses that include everything from severe mental retardation or cerebral palsy to visual impairment and behavior disorders. Most residents need a wheelchair to get around, and have limited communication skills. “Our residents could be your neighbor’s children,” Adams said. “They all require constant care and attention, and only by having the incredible staff and volunteer base that we do can our kids develop and thrive as well as they do.”

Horizons also manages a facility for adults.

The Arches’ residents, located on Bethabara Park Boulevard in Winston-Salem, also have profound disabilities. “We have one resident who has been with us since the beginning, in 1973.

She grew up at the Atrium, and now in her 40s, she lives at The Arches,” Adams said.

Some of the funds from the campaign will help with Horizons’ Respite Care Program. This program allows parents who are the principal caregivers of family members with developmental disabilities to take a short break from their duties and know that their loved ones are going to be for cared for well.

“The weekend respite program provides a ‘home away from home’ for individuals each weekend, providing 48 hours of care. Different families utilize this program from week to week during the course of a year,” Adams said.

Horizons Memorial will be performed March 21–23.

WS/FC Schools’ Kids Go Red and Get Moving for H.E.A.R.R.T Health Record-Breaking Zumbatomic Photos by The Portrait Gallery Event By Carolyn S. Peterson do 1,125 excited and chatty 4th and 5th graders, over 65 teachers and school administrators, 2 certified Zumbatomic instructors, 23 stewarding facilitators, in which over 13 were certified Zumba instructors, Mayor Allen Joines and the Guinness Book of World Records have in common? They all came together on February 1, 2013 at the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem, NC, in an attempt to break the world record for the largest number of people doing a Zumbatomic exercise in one area. It was quite an undertaking, but organizer, Cheryl Lindsay, founder of Red H.E.A.R.R.T (Help Educate And Reduce Risk Today), believed that with the Lord’s Amazing Grace, all things are possible, and with generous community support the dream of breaking the world record would definitely be probable. “The Go Red and Get Moving challenge asked students to move 30 minutes a day, five days a week, and pledge to put into practice one good nutritious practice each day, like drinking more water, eating more vegetables and fruits, and getting a good night’s sleep. We had 20 WS/FC schools that signed up to participate in the monthlong challenge, and 6 of those schools, including Cash, Diggs-Latham, Kernersville, Lewisville, Sherwood Forest and Meadowlark, were present for the Zumbatomic event,” said Cheryl.

While Cheryl had one perspective on the event, Meadowlark Elementary School 5th grade teacher, Abby Kelpin, and Lewisville Elementary School 4th grader, Emily Hipes, had their own take on the record-breaking event.

“It was pretty cool to stand back and watch over 1,000 students moving at the same time.

It was a fun event that we all enjoyed; it’s not every day that you get an opportunity to join with so many people and break a world record. It was an honor to be invited,” stated Abby Kelpin. But for student Emily Hipes, the event was much more than a “field trip,”

Emily Hipes has always had an interest in The Guinness World Record Book, having received her first GWR Book at age 4. “I love to look at all the records, picking ones I think I can beat and reading about the wild and crazy things people do. To be a part of breaking one of the records was an amazing experience. I have also added more exercise, like riding my bike and being outside. I try to eat from all the food groups and not too many sweets!”

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to springtime (well, maybe they even leap ahead to summer!) and taking advantage of as many opportunities as possible to get outdoors for fun with friends and neighbors. The perfect “hop” into the new spring season, the egg hunt is held each year at the Piedmont Triad Farmers’ Market (2914 Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax, NC, exit 208 off of Interstate 40) and attracts thousands of visitors, rain or shine. This year’s festival will once again deliver fun for all ages, along with oodles of brightly colored eggs, tempting candy treats and outdoor activities guaranteed to thrill your youngest family members. From 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., families can enjoy rides, games, arts and crafts, magicians and other featured entertainment, along with the main event, the traditional Easter egg hunt.

Plus, moms and dads can enjoy a Saturday afternoon shopping with local vendors.

This year’s hunt will be divided into three age groups: 2–3, 4–6 and 7–9.

Egg hunt participants should bring their own baskets or bags, and parents are encouraged to bring along a camera for portraits with the Easter Bunny. The bunny himself will be onsite all afternoon for photos, hugs and plenty of smiles!

Small Stories for a Big World

By Kim Underwood the years, Doobins has immersed himself in many imaginary universes—Hero Factory, Bakugan, Pokemon, Transformers and, of course, one Lego world after another. Garnet and I buy however many figures we’re willing to buy knowing that, one day, Doobins will move on in his imagination and the figures will become effectively invisible.

Although he may leave an imaginary universe behind forever, sometimes, something will rekindle his interest for a time.

It might be that he becomes intrigued by some earlier incarnation—in these worlds, 2003 qualifies as the ancient past—and we will poke around on eBay to see what it would cost to lay his hands on some figures from those days. When we do, it’s not unusual to find that a new-in-the-box version of some character will go for $125. A set of four could easily go for $250 or more.

That happened recently when Doobins became interested in the mid-1980s version of Transformers that, instead of transforming into a car or truck, transform into a cassette tape. (I kid you not.)

We found an acceptable used version of one that was affordable.

The pristine ones were prohibitively expensive. That got me thinking about how, if only I had known, I could have bought a bunch of those for next-to-nothing back in 1985 and gotten rich today by selling them.

Before long, I was thinking about how, if you had a time machine, going back in time to buy toys that are collectible in our time might be a perfect use for it, because, as anybody who has watched any movies about time travel knows, the danger with time travel is doing something that would alter the future in some unpleasant way. Traveling back in time to buy a few toys and

returning to our present and selling them for a 1,000-percent return in the present seemed as if it wouldn’t be too disruptive to the space-time continuum.

But then I got to thinking about how, if a character in a movie was trying to get rich that way, no matter how innocent the enterprise initially seemed to be, it would undoubtedly turn out to have unforeseen dire consequences. Maybe some kid who was supposed to buy that Transformer cassette and spend a quiet afternoon playing with it would, after finding the shelf empty when he went into the store, go for a walk instead. Along the way, he would fall in with some ne’er- do-wells and embark on a path that would lead to assassinating the President when he grew up.

It wouldn’t have to be that dramatic. I once read a science-fiction story in which two men had a competition to see who could produce the most change in the present with the least change in the past. The guy who won did it by changing one letter in someone’s last name. I was impressed with how well thought-out the story was.

As I continued to ponder the possibility, I also started fretting about all the logistical considerations of traveling back in time to buy toys. If you traveled to 1932 when coins were mostly silver and dollar bills were Silver Certificates that could be redeemed for silver, you couldn’t show up with a bunch today’s quarters made mostly out of copper and Federal Reserve Notes dated 2009. So, first, you would have to figure out a way to convert your money. It all started seeming like a lot of trouble. I like my fantasies for getting rich to require far less work and planning.

And it would probably be just as well if the scheme didn’t require a time machine to pull off.

Winston -Salem Symphony’s Concert f or Community— Free Concert!

year, the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Symphony present a free concert as a gift to the community. This year the Symphony’s Concert for Community takes place on March 16, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Wait Chapel on the Wake Forest University campus.

This inspiring concert is both an excellent introduction to the Symphony and a treat for seasoned music lovers. It provides a unique opportunity to hear remarkable music performed by professional musicians, along with rising new talents. And what could be better for families than an afternoon of great music shared free of charge?

Both Maestri Robert Moody, Music Director of the Winston-Salem Symphony, and Matthew Troy, Associate Conductor, will conduct portions of the Concert for Community, which features the combined symphonies, totaling approximately 150 musicians, joining together to open and close the concert.

As Maestro Moody says, “This is one of my favorite concerts of the season. I love hearing and conducting the Youth Symphony musicians as well as the winners of the Peter Perret Youth Talent Search. These remarkable young musicians are the stars of tomorrow. And, when we combine the two symphonies together the result is magnificent.”

The concert opens with Maestro Troy conducting the combined symphonies as they perform the Four Sea Interludes, op. 33a, from Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, considered by many to be one of the greatest English operas ever written. Next, the Winston-Salem Symphony will perform with the two winners of the 2013 Peter Perret Youth Talent Search. The junior winner, ten-year-old pianist Kevin Xu, will play the first movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A, K. 488.

Chamber Thomas Loomis, the senior winner, is 19 years old and will perform Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat Major by Franz Liszt. The combined symphonies, under the baton of Maestro Moody, will conclude the performance with Háry János: Suite, by Zoltán Kodály. This piece incorporates Hungarian folk music into a classical setting and begins with a “musical sneeze” (Hungarian superstition decrees that if a statement is followed by a sneeze from one of the listeners, the sneeze confirms that the statement is true).

The Concert for Community is presented in partnership with the Institute for Public Engagement of Wake Forest University and is sponsored by the Montgomery/Tucker Charitable Fund.

You and your kids can celebrate this special day by creating these wonderful green treats together. Don’t forget to watch out for those tricky Leprechauns!

SHAMROCK PRETZELS Directions:

Canned breadstick dough

1. Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Salt the water and add in macaroni. Stir and cook until al dente, about 8–10 minutes.

Green-colored sugar Cinnamon

Directions: 1. Pre-heat oven to break stick-package directions. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.

2. Create a clover shape by molding three bread sticks into hearts and bringing them together at their bottom points. Add half a breadstick for the stem of the clover.

3. Let kids decorate the clover with green-colored sugar and cinnamon.

4. Bake according to package directions and serve to your lucky little leprechauns.

IRISH SEA FOAM MILK SHAKES 1½ cups mint chocolate chip or pistachio ice cream 1½ cups milk ½ cup seltzer or club soda

Directions: 1. Pulse ice cream and milk in a blender to combine.

2. With blender running, pour in seltzer or club soda.

2. While the pasta is cooking, make the avocado sauce by having the kids peel the avocado (you may need an adult to get it started). Then, using a plastic or child-safe knife have the kids cut the avocado in half lengthwise, remove the pit by spooning it out (or let an adult do it the proper way with a sharp knife), and dice. Place the garlic, avocados, lime juice, salt and pepper into a food processor or blender and have an adult blend until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

3. To make the cheese sauce, place the butter in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat. When the butter is melted, have the kids carefully whisk in the flour to create a paste; then whisk in milk until smooth. Return to the heat and stir with a wooden spoon until the sauce starts to thicken. Add in grated white cheddar cheese and stir until cheese is melted and sauce is creamy.

4. Place the macaroni in a large bowl. Pour the avocado sauce over the macaroni and let the kids stir until well coated. Add the cheese sauce and let the kids stir until the cheese sauce coats the macaroni. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve warm. Garnish with fresh avocado chunks if desired.

Note: The lime juice keeps the avocado from browning. The mac and cheese is best eaten the first day, but is still tasty the next day, though it
