As a dog mom, another article I’m especially excited about this month is our feature on Animal Ark! Both of my dogs are patients there, and I absolutely love their approach to veterinary care. They look at the whole animal rather than simply treating a symptom, incorporating things like acupuncture, chiropractic care, herbal medicine and nutrition when appropriate, alongside traditional veterinary medicine. I love that they take the time to consider what might best support an animal’s overall health and well-being rather than automatically jumping straight to medication. If you’re a fellow dog (or cat!) parent, I think you’ll really enjoy learning more about what Animal Ark has to offer. Turn to page 36!

We also have a new column that I’m super excited about! ob Shouse’s personal integrity and unassuming level of expert customer care are a direct reflection of how the company culture at Ogburn Electric in Winston-Salem has shaped his career and his life.

An employee of this family owned company for more than 40 years, Bob has built an impressive reputation as service manager that’s shaped by trust, mentorship and mutual respect. While looking for an opportunity to learn the electrical trade years ago, Bob caught the eye of company president, Sam Ogburn, who immediately recognized his eagerness to learn.

As an apprentice, Bob gained experience on a wide variety of residential and commercial projects that challenged him to continually learn more and more. Now, he finds that working for customers all throughout the Triad has taught him the importance of craftsmanship, professionalism and building lasting relationships. He’ll also tell you how the variety of projects and the satisfaction of helping people kept him engaged all these years.

Most notably, Bob worked closely with renowned poet Dr. Maya Angelou, one of Winston-Salem’s most distinguished residents, for nearly 25 years. In fact, Ogburn Electric handled Dr. Angelou’s electrical needs at her home, long before she became famous.

“Her traditional Thanksgiving parties lasted nine days, so I stayed onsite during that entire time to oversee every detail of the setting, including tents, heaters and equipment needs for the band,” shares Bob. He also orchestrated lighting for her many book clubs, where he got to know the warm personality behind those treasured poems and essays.

“We’d have early conversations while just enjoying her yard, and she would always ask about my family,” Bob remembers. “About two years later, even though I had seen her very little during that time, she was working at her house, sat down and immediately asked about my children, even remembering their exact ages. We picked up right where we left off as real friends do. She would introduce me as ‘Bobby, part of my extended family’ to guests who attended her events.”

Bettie Clay, Maya Angelou’s personal assistant and publicist, was also present this past June when the Ogburn team honored Bob with a 40th Anniversary “BBQ & Bluegrass” party at its WinstonSalem offices. It was a heartfelt celebration, recognizing Bob’s dedication to his Ogburn Electric family and to customers who quickly became family as well.

Born and raised in Winston-Salem, Bob and his wife, Cynthia, now live in King, NC, where free time finds him riding his Harley Davidson, savoring time spent on the pontoon boat and traveling as much as possible. Family also means everything, whether it’s Bob’s six sons and five grandchildren, the close camaraderie he enjoys with the Ogburn Electric staff or the customers he bonds with every single day.

“We develop family type relationships with our customers here at Ogburn Electric,” he shares. “For example, I just got off the phone with a new customer, and by the time we finished our conversation, it felt like we were good friends.”

NAVIGATING MENOPAUSE with Evidence, Experience, and Heart

s an OB/GYN, I’ve spent my career helping women navigate every stage of health. When I began my residency in the early 2000s, the landmark Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study had just been published.

Almost overnight, the medical community’s approach to Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) changed.

Hormone therapy—once widely prescribed to ease the transition through menopause— was suddenly associated in headlines with increased risks of heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer. Understandably, patients and healthcare providers pulled back.

For years, fear dominated the conversation.

And in the process, a significant gap emerged in the care of millions of women experiencing very real—and sometimes debilitating— symptoms of menopause.

WHAT WE KNOW NOW

Fortunately, science did what good science is supposed to do: it continued to evolve.

Further analysis of the WHI data revealed important nuances, particularly around when hormone therapy is started and which women are appropriate candidates.

Current guidance from The Menopause Society reflects a much more individualized understanding of MHT. For many healthy women who begin hormone therapy before age 60 or within 10 years of their final menstrual period, the benefits—including relief from hot flashes and other symptoms and protection against bone loss—may outweigh potential risks.

We also know that the type and route of hormone therapy matter. Transdermal options, such as patches and gels, may offer advantages for certain women. Lowdose vaginal estrogen can also safely and effectively treat Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM), including vaginal dryness, discomfort, and recurrent urinary symptoms.

Most importantly, menopause treatment should never be one-size-fits-all. A woman’s cardiovascular health, cancer history, metabolic health, age, symptoms, personal risk factors, and preferences all belong in the conversation.

CUTTING THROUGH THE NOISE

While the science has become clearer, the public conversation around menopause has arguably become noisier.

Women searching online for answers encounter an overwhelming marketplace of supplements, anti-aging promises, expensive testing, hormone products, and social media advice. Some information is excellent. Some is incomplete. And some is simply unsupported by good evidence.

Women deserve better than having to sort through competing claims on their own.

They deserve a trusted healthcare professional who will listen, understand their symptoms and goals, explain the evidence, and help them make informed decisions.

And that includes an equally important message: hormone therapy is not appropriate for everyone, and it is not the answer to every symptom of midlife.

Women who cannot take MHT—or simply choose not to—can still thrive during and after menopause. Non-hormonal medications, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, mental health support, sexual health care, and other evidence-based interventions can all play meaningful roles.

MENOPAUSE CARE IS WHOLEPERSON CARE

Perhaps one of the most important changes in our thinking is recognizing that menopause care should not exist in isolation.

Midlife is also a critical time to pay attention to cardiovascular health, bone health, cancer

screening, metabolic health, emotional wellbeing, sexual health, sleep, nutrition, and physical activity.

In that sense, menopause care is also primary care.

The best approach brings together the expertise of OB/GYN specialists and primary care physicians while recognizing that every woman arrives with a different health history, different symptoms, and different goals.

That philosophy is guiding One Health as we develop a comprehensive virtual menopause program designed to expand access to physicians and advanced practice providers with expertise in menopause care.

The program will combine the convenience of virtual care with evidence-based clinical guidance and connections to broader primary care, women’s health, nutrition, behavioral health, and lifestyle resources.

Our goal is not simply to create another menopause service. It is to build a thoughtful model of care that is responsive to women during a stage of life that medicine has too often minimized, misunderstood, or treated with a one-size-fits-all approach.

Menopause is not a disease. But the symptoms and health changes surrounding it deserve serious attention.

Women deserve the opportunity to understand what is happening in their bodies, to separate evidence from noise, and to make informed choices about their health.

Most of all, they deserve to be heard.

Modern menopause care should offer women more than a prescription. It should provide knowledge, options, partnership, and confidence for the years ahead.

September’s Must-Take Day Trip Enjoy Cooler Days with a Family Friendly Escape Filled with Trails, Swimming and Lake Views

September finally brings a little bit of relief amid the heat, making it the best time for an outdoor adventure! That’s why, for this month’s Getaway Guide, I’m featuring Lake Norman State Park. This destination is filled to the brim with natural wonders, learning and fun.

For those going boating, life jackets are required and provided with all rentals. All boat rentals require at least one boater in the group to be 16 or older. Boats must be returned to the dock by 4:00 p.m.

Since it’s an easy hour-ish ride, it makes a great day trip destination or the perfect opportunity for a long weekend at the lake.

The park gate opens at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 8:00 p.m. during the months of September and October. The Visitor’s Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

WHY VISIT LAKE NORMAN STATE PARK?

Covering about 17 miles of Lake Norman’s northern shoreline, this NC park provides great views among an abundance of outdoor activities. It’s a great spot for families to get active or have a calm day in nature. Plus, their extensive trail system has options for everyone from little kids to experienced bikers.

TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO AT LAKE NORMAN STATE PARK

From water slides to memorable desserts, there is a reason this destination is a longstanding summer tradition for many families. Since the park has more than 40 attractions, you could go for a full day and still miss doing something; so here is a list of some don’t miss attractions.

1. Swim at the Beach Area – Open through October 31st, this area is great for swimming and sunbathing. There is also a bathhouse for changing and showering and a nice concession stand for purchasing snacks.

2. Explore the Trails – This park has 15 different trails at varying levels of length and difficulty. The Dragonfly Trail is the easiest and is a paved .25-mile loop. Whereas the Itusi Bike Trail is the longest at a 30.5-mile loop.

3. Check Out the Visitor’s Center – This beautiful building provides tons of information on the State Park and even has a fun kids’ corner for coloring and playing. If you head out back onto the covered porch, you can relax and enjoy the view in rocking chairs.

4. Enjoy a Picnic – Whether you pack a lunch or grab something on your way into the park, this outdoor destination is an ideal and tranquil spot for a picnic. There are picnic tables in certain areas or you can spread out a blanket.

5. Go Out on A Boat – Experience Lake Norman first-hand by going out on a boat. The park offers boat rentals for non-motorized watercrafts, including pedal boats, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

There is no fee to enter the park. While the website lists there might be a fee for the beach area during the season, that’s only until Labor Day and when there is a lifeguard on duty. If you go this month, there likely will be no beach/swimming fee or a lifeguard.

THE CAROLINA CLASSIC FAIR Memory Making for All Ages

A Triad tradition, The Carolina Classic Fair n always colorful, supremely festive

will take center stage at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds this year from October 2nd through October 11th.

Joining families, friends and the entire community, the fair offers endless memory making opportunities (and photo opportunities) with something fun for all ages. Whether your family is all about thrilling carnival rides and exciting live entertainment, browsing unique creative exhibits and sampling delicious food, or simply relaxing and reconnecting, mark your calendar!

“We’ve intentionally made a place where people of all ages can come together, make lasting memories and share experiences that span generations,” shares Christian Baucum, marketing and branding manager for the City of Winston-Salem.

Some of this year’s entertaining highlights will include Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel (October 2nd – October 6th), the ever popular Agricultural Magician, thrilling sky walkers and the entertaining Mark Dobson – the One Man Band. Music lovers will have a chance to relax with a variety of live performances throughout the fair, including Grandstand concerts, bluegrass music in Yesterday Village, We Are Messengers, the WQMG Clocktower R&B Takeover and The Band Perry.

Always a highlight of The Carolina Classic Fair, traditional demonstrations from talented artisans and craftsmen will be in plentiful supply. Take time to appreciate the fascinating works of a chainsaw artist, glass smith, tin smith, pottery artisans and woodturners.

Or, if you’re visiting the fair with a favorite friend group, plan to try your hand at Bingo, visit the Veterans Wall as part of the fair’s celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary or spend the evening relaxing with good conversation in the Beer Garden. This year will also feature a special appearance by hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut on Thursday, October 8th.

Celebrating Winston-Salem’s Young Writers This summer, the Youth Summer Literacy Program invited young writers to share their perspectives on Winston-Salem through creative writing. With prompts ranging from favorite local places to imaginative ideas for the city’s future, students in elementary, middle and high school explored what makes Winston-Salem special to them. The program was created by Suzy Fielders, with winners selected by judges Brooke Culler, publisher of Forsyth Woman, Katelyn Williams, creator of What Can Brown Girls Do, and Austin Highsmith Garces, author of The Miracle Tree.

We’re excited to celebrate the three winning writers—one from each age group— and share their thoughtful, creative visions of our community.

COLORFUL WINSTON-SALEM

WINSTON NEEDS NINJA

by Zelda Shepard The first colors that remind me of Winston-Salem are red, yellow, and purple because those are the colors of the WinstonSalem Minor League Baseball team, The Dash. The Dash does activities that bring everyone together and they play some pretty good baseball.

Next, the color light yellow makes me think of Winston-Salem because it is the color of the Old Salem Moravian Star. The star is put up in November and people who visit the park enjoy taking a picture with it.

The color dark red represents Winston-Salem because it is the color of the Texas Pete’s hot sauce logo which was created by Sam Garner and his sons Thad W.Garner, Ralph C.Garner, and Harold H.Garner in 1929.

Finally, the color rainbow reminds me of Winston-Salem because of Reynolda Gardens. Reynolda is full of many different flowers, like roses, tulips, and sunflowers, to name a few. There is also a lawn where you can kick a ball, have a picnic, or admire the Reynolda House and museum.

If I were to add one thing to WinstonSalem it would be an American Ninja Warrior gym that anyone can use. It should have a free portion so that everyone can do ninja. Right now, Winston-Salem doesn't have a gym or even a park focused on ninja. The nearest one is at least a thirty-minute drive away. I feel that every town and every person should have that opportunity.

I want a ninja gym in Winston because ninja has helped me not only physically but mentally as well. Since I have started doing ninja, my confidence level has increased significantly. I feel more confident in myself and in my actions. It has also led to a new connection between me and my younger brother; we enjoy doing ninja together. Through ninja I have made new friends that cheer me on when we train.

The ninja gym should be accessible to everyone, not just those of us who are fortunate enough to pay for a membership. There would be a gym inside that you need membership for, but also two courses on the outside for everybody. One for smaller, younger people and one for teens and adults.

There would be obstacles such as a rock wall and a trapeze bar. The indoor training area would have ropes to climb and trampolines to practice flips.

If Winston-Salem were to have a ninja gym, the people would benefit in many ways. One way would be that everyone could benefit from the opportunity to improve on physical health. Ninja also creates a new group of peers that support each other. Ninja isn’t just a sport, it’s a community, and everyone should have an opportunity to join that community. That is why I believe that Winston needs ninja. (continued on page 26)

HIGH SCHOOL WINNING ESSAY

by Sarah Henderson (9th Grade) Home is not always the place where you’re born. Sometimes, it’s the place that quietly shapes who you’re becoming. For me, that place is Winston-Salem. While some people see it as just another city in North Carolina, I’ve come to see it as a place that has taught me perseverance, the value of hard work, and helped shape the person I hope to become.

One of the greatest lessons Winston-Salem has taught me is the value of hard work. Seeing teachers stay after school to help students and people work multiple jobs to support their families and reach their goals has changed the way I think about success.

I’ve learned that success is not something that is handed to you but something you earn through consistency, patience, and dedication.

Because of the examples I’ve seen around me, I’ve learned to approach my education and future with determination, knowing that every achievement begins with hard work.

Growing up in Winston-Salem has inspired me to set high expectations for myself and my future. One day, I hope to become a Registered Nurse because I want to care for people and make a positive difference during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. As I prepare to begin high school, I will be taking Math 2, World History Honors, English 1 Honors, and Earth and Environmental Science. While these classes will challenge me, I will continue growing. To me, they represent more than just a

schedule–they are stepping stones toward the career I’ve dreamed of, and a reflection of the determination Winston-Salem has helped me build.

As I look toward the future, I know there will be challenges ahead, but Winston-Salem has given me the confidence to face them. The values I have gained from growing up here continue to remind me that big dreams require hard work and inspire me to dream big, work hard, and never lose sight of my goals. As I continue my education and work toward becoming a Registered Nurse, I hope to make my community proud by giving back with the same compassion, dedication, and perseverance that has shaped me.

Home is not just where my story began. It’s where my future found its direction. Winston-Salem may be the place I call home today, but the values I’ve gained here will guide me wherever life leads me, and a part of this city will always be reflected in the person I become.

Each month this series introduces fun and impactful healthy habits to help families with kids and teens prioritize physical, mental, and spiritual well-being—fostering a lifestyle of shared growth and lifelong wellness. Healthy habits built together are the ones that last a lifetime.

There has never been a generation of children growing up with so much information at their fingertips, and never before has it been so crucial to question it.

Within minutes, children and teens can swipe and click through millions of social media posts, blogs, podcasts and videos sharing “factual” information when the reality is it’s misinformation spreading like wildfire. Raising curious thinkers helps our kids question the information they are receiving and helps protect them from being manipulated, strengthens their decision-making skills and empowers them to seek out truth rather than accepting everything the world shouts at them at face value.

IT’S NOT ABOUT TEACHING KIDS WHAT TO THINK The goal as parents and caregivers is to teach kids how to think for themselves, not to just regurgitate what we tell them. According to Stanford University’s History Education Group, the vast majority of middle and high school students struggled to distinguish advertisements from news stories or evaluate the credibility of online sources. Additionally, Pew Research Center shows that social media has become the primary source of news and information for many teenagers and adults alike.

This means, if we aren’t prioritizing teaching kids how to identify misinformation, we are leaving them vulnerable to a world that is feeding them lies. Giving them tools to

evaluate what they’re seeing helps them quiet the loudest voices and recognize the credible ones instead.

You want to normalize asking questions and being thoughtful thinkers before accepting every bit of information as truth. Curious kids are kids who love to learn! Encourage critical thinking in everyday situations, so your children become independent thinkers with humility and compassion for the world around them.

We aren’t trying to raise skeptical kids, but rather, thoughtful ones who aren’t afraid to ask a healthy amount of questions without blindly believing everything the world pushes in front of them.

Raising curious kids encourages them to become adults who pause, think, question and stay open minded when new information emerges. The world of overflowing information won’t be a match for the life skills they’ve acquired through your effort to encourage curiosity and critical thinking.

Recycled art

There is always something salvageable.

That old song book? It’s the words for your family’s next work of art. And the discarded, out of date magazines? That’s your piece’s background. And that Dollar Store frame you never used, never even opened? That’s what ties it all together. That’s what says, “This is art.”

These are the foundations for the collage I exhibited at Sawtooth and The Art SHAC’s (Re) Useful Art Exhibition, an exhibit that ran from July to August, curating art from 50 local artisans who used recycled materials to create their work.

Though I began with materials I usually use, I kept adding to my collage as time went on, trying new mediums in the process.

And I did view this piece as a process. I glued and painted over images I no longer wanted in the collage until I was happy with it. I accidentally got hot glue on the piece, and the glue was very visible. But I painted over it, using the same color paint or Sharpie as what the glue covered, and you can’t tell unless you’re looking for it. It blends in so well!

I’m explaining my process because the thing about art is that it can be covered, altered, painted over or touched up. If you or your kids only like part of your piece, keep the part you like and change the rest until you’re happy with it! Teaching this approach at an early age sets your children up for success

I went to the exhibition on its opening night, and there were so many incredible pieces! The first that stood out to me was Nicole Schoeplin’s “Suspended,” which used barbed wire, repurposed fabric and thread to weave what looked like leaves caught in a spider web! Another was Tiffany M. Shin’s “Grief,” made of linoleum samples.

In this one, you could feel the grief, how color eventually lightens but not always in the order you’d expect. Michael Cranford’s piece, “You Are Here,” has these three words among a sun and button planets. This one was made of salvaged organ pipes, buttons, marble, computer parts and paint. And Mike Valle’s “The Joker” was created from 2,800 bottle caps, all carefully positioned by color to create the image of the Joker!

that “messing it up” is what prompted me to keep adding new materials and new layers until it became something I loved, changing my mindset in the process.

Do you have any materials you’ve thought of throwing away or donating that you could use to make art? Some materials used in the exhibit were toothpicks, costume jewelry, bottle caps, linoleum samples, tulle, doll arms, plastic eyes, bicycle tire, plastic bottles, cardboard, can tabs, grocery bags, soda bottles, bread tabs, etc.

If there’s something you or your family want to try but haven’t because you feel like you’ll “mess it up,” just remember, sometimes “messing it up” is exactly what art is.

I’m grateful for this exhibition because, if the materials these pieces were made from had gone to the landfill, no one would’ve ever seen the art they created, and we would’ve lost beautifully thought provoking and profound pieces.

For me, submitting to this exhibition was a fun challenge. I used materials I’ve never used before like beads, stones, necklaces and bracelets. The more I worked on the piece, the more confident I became taking risks to cover areas I’d “messed up.” But, it turns out

To make sure every student gets to share in the excitement of a new school year, the 16th annual version of The Educator Warehouse has already been in full swing.

Through generous donations from individuals, local businesses and many other community organizations, students are receiving the daily school supplies they need to start a brand new school year and be ready for much success.

A genuine lifesaver for families all across our community, The Educator Warehouse is a collaboration with Forsyth Educator Partnership, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Council of PTAs and WSFCS. Local teachers can “shop” for supplies when the warehouse is open – in order to more fully stock their classrooms with learning essentials.

“Last year, we served about 50% of all our teachers in the WSFCS system, and we expect this year to be the same,” shares Karel Chandler, one of the organization’s founders. “The Educator Warehouse would like to thank the

As always, open houses at The Educator Warehouse took place in late July and early August to help teachers prepare their classrooms for opening day. During the remainder of the school year, teachers can shop for needed classroom supplies on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. and on the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

The Educator Warehouse does follow the WSFCS school calendar, so if any holidays or unexpected weather closures present themselves and close school, the warehouse is also closed.

Teachers are allowed one visit to the warehouse per quarter and must sign up online to shop on a specific day, for a designated amount. They can also take advantage of The Educator Warehouse’s convenient online shopping option if they are unable to shop in person. To shop in person, visit The Educator Warehouse on the Diggs-Latham Elementary School campus, located at 986 Hutton Street in Winston-Salem.

Her path to entrepreneurship wasn’t an easy or even conventional one. After dealing with most parent’s biggest fears, her middle child Pearl Monroe, a.k.a. “Roe Roe” being diagnosed with leukemia, this difficult journey led her and her family to find strength and growth.

She shares, “After 858 days of treatment, countless trips to Brenner Children’s and navigating it all during the pandemic, God opened a new door. I had always dreamed of owning my own business, but the timing never felt right. Watching my daughter fight – and ultimately beat – cancer with such strength and resilience gave me an entirely new perspective.

If she could find the courage to face her biggest challenge, I knew I could face mine.

In 2021, we opened Dash + Co. Hair Salon in Winston-Salem. It was more than a business – it was a fresh start and a way for me to rediscover myself after such a difficult season.”

WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART OF JUGGLING MOTHERHOOD AND WORKING?

“Owning businesses means there really isn’t a traditional nine to five schedule. I’m always thinking about work in some capacity. The biggest challenge is creating boundaries because motherhood and business naturally intertwine every day.

I’ve stopped chasing perfection and started chasing presence. When I’m with my family, I want them to know they have my heart.

When I’m at work, I want to serve people with excellence. And, when I fall short – which I do – I remind myself to extend the same grace to myself that I so freely give to others. Giving myself grace has been one of the greatest lessons of motherhood.”

A FICTIONAL ESCAPE: Seashells

This is a monthly column featuring flash fiction and poetry curated by local author Leo Jerez. Enjoy these short, yet captivating stories over a quick break at work, in the waiting room, at the school pickup line or on your commute.

Saltwater sediment slushes through my open toes. The tiny pieces squeeze between the gaps, bringing a giggle out of me.

“Grams, look!” I bend down to pick up a perfect half-clam seashell with dozens of wavy orange lines.

Grams turns from the ocean water, smiling warmly as she faces me, the dark blue waves crashing into foamy white behind her. She steps closer, studying the shell in my hand. Her hushed tone only just surpasses the sounds of the ocean and hungry seagulls.

“Wow, this is gorgeous, Pedr. A good find.” My heart swells with pride. Only Grams calls me by my real name.

“Do you know why I collect these?” she asks. I shake my head in response. She raises it high over the horizon, letting the waning sun reflect off its slick surface. “Each seashell is the world.”

“That’s silly, Grams.”

“It is, isn’t it?” she says, smiling. “But it’s true.

Every living thing on Earth eventually returns to soil, which enriches plants that make our air, which forms our clouds, which fill our world with water. Eventually, the ocean nurtures a tiny critter, which creates this shell as its home. After a while, this is all that’s left. A little reminder for you and me to find; to show us how we’re all connected. Every little thing.”

She hands back the shell, which I study with newfound reverence. This moment lives ingrained in my memory for all my life – long after Grams has passed.

Years later, I look at the same shell, my eyes transfixed. I can see it now in the glass jar I hold in both hands, surrounded in its container by its many brothers and sisters. I smile, wishing to remember that joyful moment years ago, thinking what Grams would say about all the little worlds we collected together.

“It’s just a bunch of old shells, Pete,” Mom says.

“If Grams heard you say that…” Anger flares the cords in my neck. “I swear she’s rolling in her grave.”

Mom rolls her eyes. “Jesus, again with the drama. You act as if this woman were a saint.

She wasn’t perfect, you know.”

“What is your problem? These meant so much to her –“ To us, I choke back before it fully leaves my mouth. But, it’s too late. My mother can find jealousy in her heart as easily as an addict clinging to a fix.

“I never understand you. She was your grandmother, I am your mother. I know it’s been hard, but we’re here and she isn’t. It’s time to move on.” She gestures with frustrated motions to the sand before us and the jar in my hand.

There is so much I want to say; it gets caught in my throat. The pain of a life without Dad – with only my mom, who’s so busy. I remember every moment Grams was there instead. My support. My teacher; full of wisdom.

It feels like there is no getting to my mother when she’s in full defensive mode. But I see the sun peek out from gray clouds to cast its warmth over the ocean once more, and I try to think of what Grams would say.

“Fine. Okay.” An unusual softness – or is it shock? – in her eyes.

We kneel in the graveyard of broken seashells and sand, the jar between us. My tears are falling, adding to the saltwater like they belong. My mom gently rubs my shoulder. I’m glad she’s here.

“Sorry. This is stupid, I know,” I say, sniffing.

“I just – I miss her.”

Mom doesn’t reply, instead looking out at the ocean. She watches the waves for a long while, lost in thought. I see her chest swell with deep breaths. Two. Three.

“This place is really beautiful, huh?”

I drag the back of my hand across my eyes and look at her, brow arching. “Yeah? I mean, we thought so...”

Mom sighs. “It’s hard. I understand. And I do miss her, too, you know.” She reaches into the jar and tosses around a few of the shells.

“She was good with you, better than –” She stops, exhales. “Sometimes it just feels like she was more of a mother to you than I was.”

I feel the confusion form on my face as my heart races to keep up with my thoughts. “It was never you against her, Mom. Don’t you get how lucky I was to have both of you?”

Mom blinks. “What?”

She nods, covering her mouth and clicking her tongue. Both our eyes are watering.

We let the peace of the ocean envelop us, admiring the seashells. We work together, placing each seashell lovingly; letting each little world in the palm of our hands return to the big one. With each one I press into the sand, I whisper a prayer to Grams and smile.

“I-I can’t do it alone,” I say, holding the jar in reach of us both. There’s a long

“Help me,” I blurt out finally.

One Hour, One Child, One Big Difference

Heart Math Tutoring is Building Skills, Confidence and Connections in Forsyth County

When a child begins to believe, “I can do this,” something changes.

For one local student, “Alex,” that change can be heard in the questions he now eagerly brings to his Heart Math Tutoring sessions.

“What’s 300 times 300?” he might ask tutors Jennifer and Margaret before confidently explaining how he thinks through a problem.

It is a long way from the first grader who entered the program still unsure of his math abilities. By his end-of-year assessment, Alex had grown in nine math concept areas.

Perhaps even more importantly, he had begun to see himself as someone who could succeed at math.

That combination of skills and confidence is at the heart of Heart Math Tutoring.

Founded in Charlotte in 2013, the nonprofit pairs community volunteers with elementary students for one-on-one math tutoring during the school day. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools unanimously approved the program’s local expansion in 2023, and since the 2023-2024 school year, 306 local students have been supported by 330 volunteers.

Now, Heart needs the community’s help to reach even more.

A GROWING NEED CLOSE TO HOME

Fewer than 60% of Winston-Salem fourth graders tested proficient in math on the 2025 North Carolina End-of-Grade assessment. For the 2026-2027 school year, Heart plans to serve 170 students and recruit more than 200 volunteers.

Approximately 100 students are still waiting to be matched with tutors.

The need is significant because early math skills extend far beyond solving equations. Developing “number sense,” an understanding of how and why numbers

work, creates a foundation for future learning.

Successful experiences with math also help children develop perseverance, problem solving skills, critical thinking and confidence.

WHEN CONFIDENCE ADDS UP

Teachers work hard to provide those foundations, but there simply isn’t enough time in the school day to give every child the individual attention they may need. Private tutoring is also out of reach for many families.

Heart’s results show what can happen when children receive consistent individual encouragement. Since the organization began, 97% of more than 8,800 students served across North and South Carolina have met growth targets established by elementary math specialists. More than 90% of teachers consistently report increased academic confidence among participating students.

Heart helps fill that gap at no cost to families.

The tutors feel the difference, too.

NO TEACHING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

One Bolton Elementary volunteer described tutoring as turning “mundane weeks into magical times,” while an Easton Elementary tutor said the curriculum makes tutoring easy and the hour “just flies by.”

Becoming a tutor may sound intimidating to someone who hasn’t stepped inside an elementary classroom in years; Heart makes it surprisingly simple.

Volunteers commit just 30 minutes or one hour each week from late September through April. They work with the same student each week, using a scripted, game-based curriculum featuring cubes, cards, number shapes and other hands-on activities.

No teaching or advanced math experience is necessary.

Each volunteer receives training, and a Heart Program Coordinator is onsite during every session to provide assistance. Tutors committing to an hour work with two students for 30 minutes each.

Heart currently serves Bolton, Easton and Petree elementary schools in Winston-Salem, with additional schools interested in bringing the program to their students.

The organization’s ability to grow depends on community support; volunteers can come from virtually anywhere – college campuses, businesses, civic organizations, churches, families or the ranks of retirees looking for a meaningful way to give back.

Because sometimes changing a child’s future doesn’t require being a teacher. It simply requires showing up, week after week, sitting beside one child and reminding them, “You can do this.”

Heart describes the role this way: 50% tutor and 50% mentor.

READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

That consistency can make an impact beyond academics. One third grader, “Ben,” had struggled with classroom behavior and frequently landed in the principal’s office.

After beginning Heart tutoring, he thrived with one-on-one attention. Within weeks, his teacher noticed his behavior improving, explaining that knowing he had dedicated time with his tutors helped him remain focused when he returned to class.

Art Around Town: Invasive Hope EXPLORING THE STORY, SYMBOLISM AND CONVERSATION BEHIND WINSTON-SALEM'S NEWEST PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION

In April of 2014, Winston-Salem became officially known as “The City of Arts and Innovation.” As home to University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) and the country’s very first locally established arts council, it’s not surprising this became our city’s name and slogan.

Since then, Winston-Salem has embraced this name and public art all around the city has been a huge part of that. From murals to sculptures, there is no shortage of art displays for the community’s citizens and visitors. That’s why, in this new Art Around Town series, I’ll be sharing a vast assortment of public art in Winston-Salem.

For the first article in this series, it felt fitting to share about one of our newest public art installations, “Invasive Hope.”

It’s been the talk of the town since it’s unveiling. Whether you love it or hate it, like any piece of art, what matters is it is creating conversations and inspiring people to pay attention.

WHAT IS INVASIVE HOPE?

In June of 2026, Winston-Salem showcased its latest public art installation, Invasive Hope. The art installation currently consists of a series of monumental steel and aluminum dandelion sculptures.

The largest sculpture depicts the dandelion after it’s lost its yellow petals and has the fuzzy white spheres everyone loves to blow off to make a wish. It stands more than 40 feet tall on the grass off the Peters Creek Parkway exit on Salem Parkway near the WinstonSalem Dash stadium.

On the other end of Salem Parkway on the Church Street bridge are two more dandelion sculptures. These depict the dandelion flower in its earlier stages when it’s yellow.

There will be five more of these yellow dandelion sculptures throughout Winston-Salem. As I’m writing this article, the city is asking the public to vote on which five spots they’d like to see them

located. The spots listed for voting include Little Creek Park, Minnie Lee Davis Harris Community Center, Parkland Park, Salem Lake Memorial Garden, Sedge Garden Park, Silas Creek Greenway, and Stuart & Emma Thomas Memorial Trail at Crossnore.

This project was funded by public bonds voted on in 2018. “In 2018, the public approved a bond initiative to fund public art as part of improvements to Salem Parkway, allocating $1,050,000 to public art.”

WHO CREATED INVASIVE HOPE?

The City of Winston-Salem commissioned only local artists for Invasive Hope, including everyone from architects to fabricators.

The City of Winston-Salem shares this information on their website regarding why this project was selected and what the dandelions reflect. “After a competitive national art call, an artist group from Winston-Salem was selected with their design, Invasive Hope. Reflecting on the history of Winston-Salem and its ups and downs, these artists believed that the dandelion aptly represented the people of Winston-Salem. Even when facing adversity, Winston-Salemites persevere and thrive. They find hope in their lives and create beauty that carries forward to the next generation. When driving down the parkway, you’ll see the full life cycle of a dandelion from the yellow bouquets to the white puff, seeing how a message of hope can carry forward and evolve.”

It’s a Grand Grand Life This and That

I’m sure there are many parents who are happy that summer is over and the children are back in school. The next nine months bring a sense of normalcy with daily schedules in place. School breaks, holidays, sports practices and other after-school activities are already noted on calendars.

There were days when, as a young mother, I looked forward to the summer being over, but as soon as it was, I wished it wasn’t.

This year will bring changes as our first grandchild is now off to college.

It won’t be the same going to Charlotte and not seeing her. Fortunately, she chose to go to UNC Chapel Hill after being accepted at a number of prestigious universities that came with honors and scholarships. I remember my freshman year at college left no time to go home for a weekend. I imagine it will be the same for her. However, she knows if she needs a beach break, our door is always open (fingers crossed).

For years, our family spent the Labor Day weekend at a resort in the mountains. It was very family oriented, and we looked forward to our time there every year. Unfortunately, the owners sold it, and it was turned into more of a corporate retreat with prices to match. We have spent the last several years trying to find something comparable, but haven’t found it yet. Not sure how this year’s find will turn out.

I did have a fabulous birthday thanks to my wonderful girls. We all went to one of my favorite places for several days. All 14 of us enjoyed our time on the island. They all went above and beyond making it a time to remember.

No real surprise, I have been blessed with the best family!

To move on…

I hope that in between school, soccer practice, dance lessons, soccer games and everything else that the grands are involved in, there will be some down time for a day trip here and there.

Since the aquarium here is getting a renovation, maybe a trip to the turtle rehab facility one Saturday. There are apple orchards and pumpkin fields to visit which will be opening soon. I’ll get some exercise walking around while the younger grandchildren go trick or treating and praying that the weather will cooperate. Also, as the weather gets cooler, a Saturday trip to the zoo in Asheboro may be a fun getaway.

I fool myself into thinking I am still young enough to keep up with all of my grandchildren. All it takes to debunk that notion is all the stretching it takes just getting out of bed in the morning – nevermind looking in the mirror. However, that aside, I still show up for as many activities they are involved in as possible.

I love being there for them – if it’s important to them, it’s important to me. This pertains to school functions as well. That’s why it means the world to me to be able to live in the same town as four of them and an easy drive to the other three.

Finally…

As school has started, I am wondering what and how certain subjects will be taught. I understand that children can learn things differently from the way my generation learned. I have watched as my grandchildren have gone through a long written process of adding numbers because someone decided that’s the new way of teaching math. However, my grandchildren wonder why, if they know the answer by simply adding the numbers together, they have to show the work in a long drawn out format. I have no problem teaching students both ways, but the ones that understand it without using an entire sheet of paper shouldn’t have to do it that way, too.

I’m pretty sure I am already having issues with the use of AI, but that problem is for another time.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

Students, Professors and the AI Balancing Act

Walk on a college campus today, and it looks familiar. Students gather in study lounges, rush to class with backpacks half open and cram for exams. However, there’s a quiet shift happening in how they learn, write and solve problems. Artificial intelligence (AI) has slipped into their daily routines, not as a novelty but as a tool they treat almost as naturally as a search engine. This shift raises a question that higher education cannot afford to ignore. What happens to learning when AI becomes a constant companion rather than an occasional resource?

AI is one of those inventions that makes adults feel conflicted. Part of us wants to cheer for the “wow” factor, while another part wonders if we should be bracing for impact. But, here’s the twist, today’s college students aren’t cautiously experimenting with AI, they’re growing up with it. Students aren’t waiting for institutions to decide how AI should be used.

They’re performing their own experiments to discover better ways of doing things.

Colleges, meanwhile, are responding slowly and unevenly, which is not surprising given how quickly AI has evolved and the evergrowing list of challenges higher education faces merely to survive.

It’s only the beginning of the AI era, and the dichotomy between students and faculty is already becoming impossible to ignore.

Students are simply being resourceful. They’re using the best tools available to produce strong work. Punishing them for using advanced technology in higher education seems counterproductive, especially when the world they’re preparing for will demand fluency in these tools. Nick Potkalitsky, PhD, an educator and writer specializing in AI literacy, spoke about the choice facing schools: whether to teach students to use it thoughtfully or leave them to figure it out on their own. That’s the heart of the challenge.

The question is not whether they will use AI; it’s apparent. The question is how to ensure that AI supports learning rather than replaces it. Renowned educator Sal Khan said, “AI is not going to replace teachers, but teachers who use AI will replace teachers who do not.”

His point can also apply to students. Those who learn to use AI thoughtfully will likely thrive. Those who rely on it blindly may struggle to develop the greater, in-depth skills that college is meant to build.

The changes are becoming more visible. Students use AI to research, brainstorm and write. Professors use AI to analyze, evaluate and grade.

Both sides gain efficiency, yet both risk losing something essential. We know learning involves a certain amount of struggle.

Wrestling with ideas, making mistakes, revising and trying again. Some educators worry that if AI smooths out every rough edge, students may miss the traditional cognitive workout process that builds longterm understanding. I’m not so sure that’ll be the result. I think it could possibly raise the bar on learning and development.

Think of it in this way: Tomorrow’s students will be starting at a higher level from the very beginning. Consider this metaphor… they’re not learning to build a house with simply a hammer, nails and wood; they’re using state-of-the-art materials, the highest quality power tools and architectural engineering and design. As such, their abilities theoretically become so much greater as a result, and so does the quality of their output. Only time will tell if this is the true outcome.

The challenges are profound, yet inevitable.

From course design to incorporate AI’s use without sabotaging the learning effect to the threat of dependency for this modern day universal source of information, ideas, solutions, efficiencies and discoveries; it’s easy to see how both groups could become comfortable with shortcuts that gradually reshape how information is processed.

But, what happens to our brains when AI’s predominant use becomes the norm? Does

it open up our minds to greater depths, or do we become sleepwalkers incapable of simple understanding? Reference the movie “Idiocracy” (2006).

We’ve already learned how social media has reduced attention spans. Dr. Gloria Mark at UC Irvine performed studies revealing that social media drastically reduced our day-today focus and trained us to be less tolerant of boredom. One study measured how long an individual spends on a single screen before switching tasks: 2004: 2.5 minutes, 2012: 75 seconds, Current Average: 47 seconds.

A reduction of 69% in time per screen. That one factor, for instance, irrevocably changes the world of advertising, entertainment and news. How does one get their message out if they can’t get the reader to stay on the page long enough to understand? A simple study that implies dramatic effects. Think of how much more of an impact Artificial Intelligence will have on how we process the multitude of information we encounter every day.

In a world with this much uncertainty, some good advice for both students and professors comes from prominent author and influential futurist Alvin Toffler, who said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”
