Despite

the pandemic causing our normal rapid pace of activities to slow down…time has still managed to fly by. It’s September already, and I’m left wondering where time has gone! Good to know there is something that Covid hasn’t affected! Although, I think most anyone you ask would agree, we are ready for time to fly to a vaccine, to the end of social distancing and wearing a mask, to the end of this pandemic!

This marks the sixth “From the Heart” I have written since COVID-19. I just returned from my summer vacation with my family where we spent eight glorious days basking in the sun on Madeira Beach in Florida. Yes, Florida, I know, I know. Why would we travel there during the pandemic? But, this area is no more of a hot spot than where we live, and we drove versus flying! As you probably know, the Gulf Coast of Florida is my little piece of heaven on Earth. This year was especially sweet given that at one point when this all began, we had no idea we’d even get to go on a vacation. We originally planned to go to California this year but decided this was not the year to visit there. Spending such quality time with my

family always reinvigorates me and gives me a renewed sense of purpose. I hope that you were able to vacation whether away or a staycation at home and re-charge your battery as well!

The September issue features the vision for the new Kaleideum building.

It is a wonderfully creative design, and I can’t wait to hear more details about the interior and exhibits in the coming months. Kaleideum North and Downtown are amazing facilities, but bringing the two together in one building in such a fantastic location will enrich the experience tenfold.

Construction is expected to start summer of 2021 with expected completion in spring of 2023. I’m very excited to spread the word about the new Sunflower Extravaganza at Kersey Valley. Be sure to check out page 5.

It’s the first year and perfect timing when we are all looking for outdoor activities to enjoy. Kersey Valley also has the Corn Maize and Spooky Woods, which are fall favorites, not to mention a host of other activities, so make a day of it!

Local Independent School Offers Options with On-Campus and Virtual Learning

When

the COVID-19 pandemic hit last spring, Forsyth Country Day School pivoted immediately to virtual learning and was extremely successful due to its flexibility as an independent school.

“The novel coronavirus hit us suddenly, and we were able to adapt quickly,” Head of School Gardner Barrier said. “Students started spring break early and our teachers dived into training. When we all came back from break, our staff threw themselves into the work.”

Unlike many schools across the country, Forsyth was able to offer a largely synchronous (in real-time) schedule for Middle and Upper School and a significant portion of synchronous learning in Lower School, such as morning meeting, live reading instruction via Zoom, and live special events like the third grade State Fair and live science labs.

To find out what was working for students and parents and what wasn’t, the school did multiple parent surveys and used the feedback to fine-tune its approach.

“Feedback from parents and students alike across divisions was overwhelmingly positive,” said Associate Head of School for Teaching and Learning Dr. Michelle Klosterman. “Because we know our families and our students so well, we could differentiate extremely well.

We could home in on equity in differentiation, and we did what was right for the individual student.”

Mr. Barrier agreed. “I was most impressed with how attuned our faculty were to the social-emotional AND academic needs of our students,” he said. “The fact that we weren’t on campus together didn’t diminish how much the faculty care, and they did such a fantastic job of supporting students and families alike.”

Nizar, the father of two FCDS preschoolers, wrote: “I just want to thank you all for an amazing job...in e-learning. You guys did a huge leap and adaptation to computer-based learning,” he said. “Our kids are learning and having fun. [I] appreciate all of you in this great work.”

Upper School parent Beth said she was beyond grateful. “Having school be okay, having school have a plan, having school be constant and grounded...that is something powerful and beyond words that you all have given our children and our community. Thank you for the hours and hours of work I am sure you all have done.... Education is of utmost importance, but it pales in comparison to the life lessons of strength, perseverance, and quiet determination that [my son] sees in his school.”

After a summer of intense planning, FCDS was able to start back on campus and in person on August 19. Over the summer, new health and safety guidelines were created to keep students and faculty safe at school. These include wearing face coverings, social distancing, enhanced sanitation protocols, increased use of outdoor space, and daily health and temperature checks.

Students and families who don’t feel comfortable coming to campus have the option to attend class virtually via FuryFlex, which allows students at home to virtually attend school with their classmates in real time.

Forsyth Country Day has also planned for the possibility of having to flip back to virtual learning at a moment’s notice, with all teachers attending virtual learning training over the summer in order to further enhance the methods they used in the spring.

“What we were able to do this spring was remarkable because we’d never done anything like it before—no one had,” Mr. Barrier said. “We’ve learned so much since then, and we’re ready for our students and families, no matter what’s ahead.”

FAVORITE VIRTUAL LEARNING LESSONS: • Lego Challenges (building and sharing creations) and Creation Exploration, where students chose art media and created their masterpieces virtually together in Kindergarten.

• A diary activity for the times in which we live: “Diary of My Weird Third-Grade Spring.” Students reflected on their moods or feelings and tried to find silver linings each day.

• Fifth-grade 25 Earth Day Bingo activities to get kids thinking about their relationship with the environment and take them outside! Activities included a nature scavenger hunt, creating a model of the layers of earth using sand, DIY binoculars, leaf and other nature rubbings, spring collages, and planting gardens.

• Middle School Art Challenges like a Found Objects Color Wheel, Recyclable Robots, and a nature inspiration art challenge inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy.

• High School history students used Zoom Breakout Rooms to examine primary sources from the Stanford History Education Group on why the U.S. government put JapaneseAmericans in internment camps during World War II. Each student became the expert on one document and shared their ideas in a Google doc.

• High School English students went on an Odyssey! Students conferenced 1:1 to discuss how they were progressing on their Odyssey essays, and each student had the chance to have really meaningful discussions with his or her teacher.

begins with a separation by walls inside the home and later extends to the outdoors. Communication is still present, “I will be outdoors working in the garden.” And then, the question, “Do you want to come with me?” Parents cannot help but want to keep their children close by to ensure physical and emotional safety.

In North Carolina, a child cannot remain at home, unsupervised, including within a vehicle, until the age of eight; only then can a child be left alone for a maximum of two hours. By age 12, children can legally remain home for up to three hours during the daytime.

QUESTIONS • Not every child has the emotional maturity to remain alone. Here are a few questions parents can ask themselves to ensure readiness.

• Does your child follow the rules and demonstrate responsibility with housework, personal chores, and homework?

• Can your child work well independently?

• Does your child make the right decisions?

• How are unexpected situations handled?

Does your child remain calm or panic?

• How does your child feel when spending time alone?

ESTABLISHING HOUSE RULES Every household has different circumstances and rules. Perhaps children are allowed to go into the backyard, visit with a friendly neighbor, but not open the door or answer the phone. With a goal not to create too

many rules, it’s critical to establish the same standards when you are home as when you are gone, while emphasizing specific guidelines.

•A re friends allowed over, either outdoors or inside the home?

• Can the door open for strangers?

•W hat about the telephone? Can kids call their friends? Answer the phone when it rings?

•A re there rules about television, the Internet, or using electronic devices? Is there a warning about openly stating the words “home alone” on social media?

•W hat rules do you have about using the kitchen, explicitly operating appliances, or using utensils?

COMMUNICATION Phone watches are a popular and convenient tool to help parents and children communicate when a landline is not present. Parents can control contacts by adding up to seven phone numbers. After a period of rings, some “smartwatches” will automatically open the line for one minute.

Watch owners can receive texts and select pre-written responses, such as “yes,” “no,” “okay,” and a few others. For parents who are not ready to invest in a smartphone, the phone watch, offering an accurate GPS, is an ideal and inexpensive option to monitor a child’s movements.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: •W ho is your emergency contact? Is it the next-door neighbor, a nearby family down the street, or a grandparent? If your

child feels endangered, designate a “safe house” for your child to go to if they have a unique circumstance. (It’s a good idea to inform immediate neighbors, if they are part of your plan.) Ensure that children memorize essential personal information, such as parents’ and grandparents’ names, addresses, and phone numbers.

•C hildren need reassurance; please allow them to call you just to talk or share what they are doing. Create “check-ins” every half-hour or hour.

MAKE A PRACTICE RUN Practicing to fulfill the next milestone involves an ongoing activity and dialogue.

Your child should know how and when to call 911, operate the home security system, and what to do if smoke appears, an alarm sounds, or a power outage occurs. Take a 30-minute to an hour practice run, while keeping all lines of communication open.

Give your child options for what he/she can do, such as watching a favorite television program, continuing building a model, or completing a list of tasks. As parents return home, talk about any problems or concerns.

Keep talking about possible scenarios, such as handling the doorbell or answering the phone. As kids hear worse-case situations, they are more likely to respond favorably!

THE BUDDY SYSTEM Siblings are fortunate, despite their personal feelings, to have another person in the home as a means of companionship and comfort. “Only” children may also consider a family pet, such as a dog, cat, or hamster, as a suitable friend.

With preparation and practice, parents and kids will feel comfortable spending time independently, apart!

CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF IMPACT WITH CRISIS CONTROL MINISTRY

an incredible thing to think that thirty years ago, what started out as an idea to save the food pantry at Crisis Control Ministry grew into the incredible outreach program and local tradition it is today. Hope du Jour has not only continued to make a difference to the Crisis Control Ministry and the citizens it serves, but to the community as a whole by bringing people together for something we can all agree on: great food!

This year’s Hope du Jour event is on Tuesday, September 8th celebrating its 30th anniversary where participating restaurants will donate what they are able to Crisis Control Ministry, Forsyth County’s largest provider of emergency assistance. Members of the community can come out to show their support for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert!

What makes this event so special you may wonder? Margaret Elliot, the Executive Director shares that “People go out just because it’s Hope du Jour! They look forward to it every year!”

When Candide Jones, then the WinstonSalem Journal restaurant reviewer, and Patti Hoffman, the Crisis Control Ministry Director at the time, came together to make the fundraiser a reality, they started with an ambitious 40 restaurants. The goal was to raise money for the food pantry while helping local restaurants increase sales on Tuesday nights, one of their traditionally lower volume business times.

Naturally, the first Hope du Jour was an immediate success and has now led to this year’s 30th-anniversary event, to include over 125 restaurants, bakeries, breweries,

coffee shops, and even a few other small businesses! You can find a Hope du Jour restaurant to dine out at in Winston-Salem, Rural Hall, Walkertown, Kernersville, Clemmons, and Lewisville.

having a support organization like Crisis Control is of paramount importance. I am grateful to be able to do my small part in helping Crisis Control each year, as I know the cause is a worthy one.”

Residents of Forsyth Country who have experienced an unavoidable financial crisis such as a health issue, unemployment, or car repair are able to come to Crisis Control Ministry for temporary assistance with food, housing, utilities, and even medication.

Abbey Riesett, the Special Events & Marketing Manager for the Crisis Control Ministry, shared that last year, the ministry assisted 13,902 of our neighbors with a total value of $2,921,247 through their efforts and the generosity of the community. While there are 18 employees and 202 weekly volunteers helping to change the lives of these individuals who are experiencing unfortunate circumstances, the community that comes together for Hope du Jour each year truly is part of the Crisis Control family as well!

Other long term participants such as Village Tavern, Waldo’s Wings, Midtown Cafe & Dessertery, and Diamondback Grill have also seen the impact Hope du Jour can make and continue to take part because of it. Hope du Jour even adds a little friendly competition in the mix by presenting awards in three different categories each year. The 2019 winners were:

We’re living in a time where the false narrative that “everyone is out for themselves” rings loudly, but Hope du Jour challenges that thought and reminds us that true community exists and thrives right here!

Stephen M. Kroustalis of Plaza Restaurant continues to be part of Hope du Jour each year and shared why he is proud to take part in the event. ”I do not wish to live in the type of world where we do not look out for each other. By that, I mean not just those that are family and close to us, but also anybody that may need a helping hand.

Great question! Everything is relevant, from arriving at school before the late bell to having assignments ready to submit by the deadline and even walking to and from classes. By graduation, students will achieve readiness beyond knowing how to read, write, and perform mathematical equations. Both taking out the trash and hanging out with friends are part of the requirements for living a balanced life.

Every conversation with family members, coaches, teachers, strangers, and friends provides an experience for the future.

Understanding Budgets A steady paycheck with a plan to pay bills can lead to a feeling of financial security.

Include in your budget money for an emergency, such as an automotive repair, doctor bill, or losing a job. Start with a system to create a balanced budget.

While computer software programs offer a bill-pay system, another viable option is to use a spreadsheet or notebook. Be aware of due dates to alleviate paying unnecessary finance charges. Credit cards can help young adults establish credit and offer incentives, such as cashback or points; however, the cards must be part of a workable budget and paid monthly!

Running a Household Employers want to know young adults have more than just book skills. Questions will arise to measure a candidate’s ability to work independently and complete various self-sufficient and labor-related jobs. Young adults should invest in

Managing Time Wisely Of course, you can juggle. You’ve already realized it’s not easy to balance homework and projects, extracurricular activities, a part-time job, family and friends. Life requires every adult to manage multiple personal and professional priorities. Each day may result in a new worry or crisis that could consume your time. Remember, your reputation and work ethic depend on fulfilling particular requirements, such as arriving on time, dressing appropriately for the occasion, using a personal calendar, tracking appointments, meeting deadlines, and maintaining open communication.

Develop Strong Communication Skills Every meeting with a friend or a stranger is an interview. Remember to shake hands, maintain eye contact, be respectful, listen, and wait to respond.

Body language tells friends and acquaintances everything they need to know before you say one word. It can foster likeability; therefore, focus on how you appear. Do you fidget, break eye-contact, use your hands wildly, or touch your face when speaking? All those qualities can give the impression that you are either lying or anxious. Learn to read other people’s body language by figuring out what they are thinking or feeling. Public speaking is just one form of communication. How well do you

work with others? Can you take verbal directions and follow them? Do you pull your weight in projects?

From creating a resume and cover letter to writing a complaint letter about a product, it is vital to organize thoughts concisely while targeting a specific audience. Always spell out words, try to avoid contractions, and reread every letter before sending it.

Accepting Feedback Gracefully Reflection is part of every task. It’s important to wonder, “Did I do the job well?” Were the expectations met, and how could I improve? In the effort to learn from mistakes, criticism may surface.

Young adults should practice setting aside their emotional responses and focus on constructive comments. Take time to accept feedback and respond positively.

Making Relationship Decisions Relationships require dedication and work, from friends to work colleagues.

The association may require a specific emphasis, comprising, perhaps, kindness, respect, responsibility, dependability, or trust. It’s vital to set standards for each of your relationships. You may not always like a boss or a brother-in-law, but respect and fairness can make connections flourish. Holding a high standard can create a quality life, if leaving a high-stress work environment or separating from an abusive relationship.

Straw Bale Garden Wonders

there is an answer to an organic gardener’s prayers—straw bales! It’s clever when you consider that this medium holds in moisture, prevents weed seedlings from forming, and is the ultimate vessel to grow herbs, vegetables, flowers, and various ornamental plants. With the aid of water, and a small amount of potting soil and fertilizer, the straw gradually breaks down, providing well-needed nutrients throughout the growing season. It is the perfect solution for anyone who has poor soil conditions, lacks mobility, or seeks an economical means to enjoy the fruits of gardening!

The Difference between Hay and Straw The medium will make a difference in the outcome of your endeavor; therefore, use straw. Hay is a grass, which comprises alfalfa. The attached seeds will result in the germination of unwanted weeds.

Straw, on the other hand, is made from the leftover stalks of oats and wheat. Since the tops and the seeds are removed during the harvest, straw is essentially a weed-free natural raised bed! However, ensure your purchase is, in fact, organic and not sprayed with pesticides and other harmful chemicals.

Getting Started Find a location that receives six to eight hours of direct sunlight and near a water source! Be sure of your spot; bales soaked across the next 12 days will be unmovable!

To prevent weeds from growing into the bundle, place a barrier, such as a tarp or cardboard underneath. If arranging multiple bales, think about accessing the middle. You may consider forming the shape of a “U” or “L” As the decomposition process occurs, expect shrinkage. One option is to fill in the open spaces with additional compost.

DAYS ONE TO THREE: The conditioning process takes roughly two weeks. The goal is to transition each bale into a proper

DAYS FOUR THROUGH SIX: Across three days, sprinkle over each bale one full cup of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0). A source promoting high levels of nitrogen will increase decomposition while conditioning.

DAYS SEVEN THROUGH NINE: Cut the fertilizer amount in half, and afterward, water!

DAY ELEVEN: Feel the bale. If it’s too hot, it requires more water. Wait one more day! Warm bundles are adequate hosts for plants.

What to Plant Creativity opens the door to planting various herbs or an alternative space to grow water-consuming plants such as melons, pumpkins, or squash. Due to the medium and shape, consider using the ready-made pockets to grow potatoes or strawberries. Straw bales are an inexpensive solution to increase your yield of cucumbers or beans. You’ll need wood stakes tall enough to anchor into the

ground. (Be wary of using metal. It can heat and scorch your crops.) Other options are peppers, eggplant, lettuce, herbs, zucchini, and squash.

If you wonder how many plants could accommodate one bale: • t wo or three tomato plants (depending on your choice in using stakes or cages) • two squash plants • six pepper plants • six cucumber plants • t en to twelve strawberry plants (using the sides, too!)

Maintenance Think of your straw bale garden as a raised bed. It requires water, especially in the heat of the late summer, and perhaps daily.

Gardeners who dislike feeding the wildlife may want to invest in chicken fencing or bird netting for the wandering rabbit, raccoon, or larger animal.

Straw bale gardening has a proven success rate without the fear of overwatering, the necessity for crop rotation or amending the soil. You can increase the number of bales or decrease it, depending on the amount you wish to grow. At the end of the season, allow the bales to decompose. The result is compost, a healthy mulch to nourish plants!

Teaching Life Skills:

Cursive, Spelling, and Creative Writing

lemons are present, make yourself a glass of lemonade!

This school year already begins with unexpected challenges; however, you can introduce a few skills not taught today, such as spelling, cursive, and creative writing! While still working from home, you and your children can enjoy a rewarding bonding experience!

Improving Fine Motor Skills As children in grades three through five engage in technology-based activities using a keyboard, they risk stretching the muscles in their wrists, hands, and fingers. Children, when asked to pick up a pencil, will quickly claim their fingers hurt. One activity to encourage improvement is to engage in small hand movements, such as learning cursive. Tablets comprising pages of wide lines still exist; therefore, buy three or four.

They are especially plentiful in August through October.

• Before a child picks up the pen, teach the rule of four lines. Most lines begin at the ground, they rise to the dotted line, known as the grass, or continue towards the sky. All capital letters and only seven lower-case letters reach the top blue line.

Some letters go underground, such as the sweeping tails of “g,” “j,” “p,” “q,” and “y.”

• Teach how to grip a pencil and hold the paper at a 45-degree angle.

• Investing in a cursive handwriting book will make it an instrumental resource. Book themes, such as those in Harry Potter, can promote a willingness to engage in daily practice.

• Begin with wavy lines, and encourage staying within the lines. Coloring is a supplemental form of practicing cursive; therefore, take a half-hour afterward and bring out the crayon box!

• Start with the letters in your child’s name.

They are the most important words your child needs to know well. At the beginning and end of every practice session, request a signature.

Rather than use paper and pencil, try using a different medium, such as salt or sugar, to write their name in!

How Do You Spell?

Back in the 1990s inventive spelling replaced phonics instruction. Rather than understanding vowel digraphs and suffix combinations, children created a spelling based their interpretation of sound. The word “what” became “wat” and “pen,” for some, was “pan.” The arrival of spellcheck was not intended to replace the knowledge of phonetic awareness. By the time students arrive at fourth grade, they transition from phonetic sounds to syllables and meanings.

• When presenting words, use two different colors to identify vowels and consonants. The value is that later, children will retain the memory when words are not in color.

• Create a personalized list of five to ten words. Begin with fingerspelling the letters, tracing, writing in sugar or fingerpaint. Use songs and games to practice studying each word’s spelling.

• Talk about hard and soft sounds, vowel diagraphs, and diphthongs.

• Read books with detailed illustrations to encourage learning new words.

• Listen to audiobooks while reading to see and hear words.

• Create silly sentences using grammatic patterns such as “article-adjectivenoun-adverb-verb-preposition-articleadjective-noun.”

The world of spelling isn’t just a lesson.

It can delve into homophones, prefixes, suffixes, and multi-syllable words. Every day can be a game of learning new words and improving spelling!

Creative Writing The blank canvas of a sheet of paper is an intimidating prospect for adults and children. The mental anguish behind “How do I begin?” can be eliminated with the right motivation. Some people need to create a story map or draw pictures.

While identifying effective strategic aids in learning, parents can boost the enjoyment of writing through creative, original stories.

A few suggestions are: • L ie on the floor with closed eyes and listen to an instrumental song.

Allow the story to come to life in writing.

•E ach day, across a week, introduce five new words.

The first day may comprise dragon, bird, tree, key, and sword. Lessons can instruct in using adjectives, building suspense, developing a character, or writing an introduction.

• Read aloud the first chapter from a book, and then write what comes next.

• Invest time in writing rhyming patterns!

The possibility of delving into a forgotten subject with a child has no bounds! Enjoy the moment, learning about letters, penmanship, words, and original thoughts!

Invest in science and the long-celebrated ancient natural medicines that reward the body with a top-notch immunity system. It could be as simple as a tablespoon of syrup or digesting a warm cup of herbal tea. For every ailment, there is an herbal remedy to make the body feel great!

Elderberry: One popular cure for flu is a deep-purple berry which supplies the body with antioxidants to create a natural immune response. The Sambucus berry is antifungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anticatarrhal, and provides decongestant relief.) In addition to syrups, you can also find supplements in the form of lozenges, gummies, pills, and teas that work toward boosting immunity.

TIP: S ave at the expense of purchasing natural medicines and grow an elderberry bush. In three years, you can make your own syrups and gummies to keep the family and you in a state of good health year-round.

Echinacea: Products promoting immunity to infection in the body, especially the upper respiratory tract, contain echinacea. Plant matter comprising roots, leaves, and flowers offers antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant, and anticatarrhal properties. Consuming echinacea daily as a supplement or tea stimulates every aspect of the immune system to fight infection, while promoting wellness.

It also aids to ease colds, flu, headaches, and sinus congestion.

TIP: S team is another option to promote health. Use hot water and a few fresh leaves. Place a towel over your head to focus the rising heat towards your face; yet, not too close to cause burning.

Rosemary: Containing beneficial properties, such as Vitamins A and C, Rosemary is an anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, and antiseptic herb, renowned for fighting infection. In the stage of feeling cold and shivering, try Rosemary to reduce fever.

Parsley: Often associated with fresh breath and used as a side garnish, parsley is high in antioxidants, reduces systemic inflammations, and is beneficial to the urinary system. While stimulating the appetite, it relieves the body of bloating, constipation, and gas.

Thyme: One of the best herbs for immune support and pain relief. As mucus develops in the lungs, leading to coughing, thyme provides respiratory comfort. When the body aches, cramps, or headaches develop, the cure is thyme. It is another anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory herb.

TIP: I n an eight-ounce jar, fill half with thyme; then, pour in raw honey.

Allow the jar to sit in the sun for two weeks, shaking occasionally.

Once the infusion sets, strain out the plant matter. Use in teas or consume one teaspoon when the throat begins to tickle or feel sore.

This year, try an alternative to cold and flu medications that result in drowsiness, or the sugary aftertaste of Vitamin C tablets. Plant leaves and flowers can boost the levels of your immunity and aid when the possibility of infection exists. If in doubt that teas do work, try steeping it longer in a French press for at least thirty minutes. For deep flavors, try more than one tea bag or a potent flavor in bulk tea!

A real contact tracer might get in touch to discuss results of a test you know you took, or because someone you’ve been in contact with tested positive. They may ask you for your name and address; health information; the names of places and people you have visited. Scammers will ask you to do more.

Legitimate contact tracers may call, email, text, or visit your home to collect information. The North Carolina Attorney General’s office says that you will get an initial text from the number 45394 or email from address NC-ARIAS-NoReply@dhhs.nc.gov – and that it is safe to click on links in this text or email. After this, you will receive a call from your local health department or NC Outreach – if you can’t be reached, in-person visits using PPE will be conducted. Multiple attempts will be made to reach out.

Don’t Sleep on Evolving COVID 19 Scams Scammers are preying on uncertainty and financial hardship and adjusting their tactics to take consumers personal information and deplete their wallets. In the second quarter of 2020, the total loss to North Carolinians in COVID-19 scams came at a cost of $11 million. Of 24,358 total fraud reports, 8,279 were identity theft.

It’s more important than ever to remain vigilant against cyberattacks as tactics change and threats evolve. The Federal Trade Commission advises that one of the biggest clues you’re dealing with a scammer is that they want it fast and they’ll ask you to pay in ways that make it hard to track them down.

To protect yourself, be on the lookout for anyone who asks for social security or account numbers, or immigration status. Legitimate tracers won’t ask for this and it’s best not to respond to those requests. Real tracers will only send texts or emails and say they will be calling you.

The FTC also recommends checking with your state’s health department to make sure the person is a real contact tracer.

COVID Mask Exemption Cards To help limit the spread of the Coronavirus, many states are requiring people to wear face coverings in places open to the public. The FTC warns there are “official looking” seals on cards circulating online and on social media that say the holder has a disability that prevents them from wearing a mask, and that it’s illegal for any business to ask them to disclose their condition.

Utility Scams Scams targeting electric and natural gas customers are on the rise, with new tactics related to COVID-19 that aim to trick utility customers out of money and personal information. A record number of scammers attempts to targeted Duke Energy customers in June, hitting more than 4,000. The total number of scam attempts reported by Duke Energy customers so far in 2020 – more than 15,000 – already is approaching 2019’s full-year total of 18,000.

One of the newer tactics used by scammers promises to mail customers refund checks for overpayments on their accounts if they can confirm their personal data, including birthdays and, in some cases, social security numbers. Duke Energy and its subsidiary Piedmont Natural Gas say they typically apply refunds as a credit to customers’ accounts and will not contact them to verify personal information by phone, email or in person in order to mail a check.

Contact Tracing Scams Contact tracers work for state health departments to try to track anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19. Some scammers are using contact tracing to steal your identity, your money – or both. To tell the difference, the Federal Trade Commission recommends watching for a few signs.

Stimulus Check Calls Earlier this year, the Internal Revenue Service reported that scammers were rigging up caller ID to look like a call is coming from the government.

The agency advises consumers to hang up the phone or delete emails asking for personal information or money, and that government agencies usually will not call or email you — especially about something related to money. They almost always contact you by U.S. mail. If you have questions about Economic Impact Payments, the IRS urges you to visit their website, IRS.gov, to get answers to frequently asked questions.

You can make a real leaf mandala by punching a hole at the bottom of each leaf and threading them with yarn, raffia or hemp string. Make one to

Hair barrettes are super easy to make. You can glue seashells on with a glue gun or Gorilla Glue, but be careful not to glue your fingers together! If seashells have holes in them, thread a small piece of pliable wire through the hole, attach the wire to a jump ring and then add a silver or gold chain, or a linen, nylon, or hemp string to make a simple—but oh, so pretty—necklace.

DRIED, PRESSED FLOWER ARTS & CRAFTS Press flowers and herbs between tissues placed between pages of old catalogs or novels. Create your own floral and herbal bookmarks, or glue flowers you have pressed to cardstock for

The Future Is Near – Kaleideum Reveals Plans for the New Building Downtown

2016, The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks joined together to form Kaleideum – two locations with a common mission – “Inspiring wonder, curiosity and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery.” Collectively – between the two organizations and since the merger, they have a combined 68+ years of community commitment to offering interactive learning experiences for children and families. Together, for the last four years, these two locations have attracted visitors, inspired guests and served as a vital part of the educational fabric of our community.

Elizabeth Dampier, Kaleideum’s executive director, shared, “Museums are catalysts for thriving communities. After weeks of adjusting to our new norms, a contemporary, interactive museum of arts, sciences and exploration as an accessible destination in the heart of downtown becomes even more important. Our team is excited to move into this new phase of our organization and to share with this community we love a visual manifestation of the values and identity of Kaleideum. After all, we are a place where individuals of all ages can challenge themselves, push boundaries, ask questions and engage with their surroundings.”

Now, it is the time for a relocation…one that will create an exciting family destination in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem.

Kaleideum has received tremendous public and private support for this initiative. “The Kaleideum mission is centered around the arts and sciences,” Dampier said. “We thrive on the educational importance of the sciences, technology, engineering and math, and we use the arts as a thread that brings all of it together in an inclusive environment that combines creative learning with problem-solving and experimentation. It’s a hands-on approach to ‘learning reimagined,’ and it is something that is meant to be experienced by everyone.”

In June 2020, Kaleideum unveiled the design for the museum’s new building in downtown Winston-Salem. This is the result of years of collaboration and strategic planning by the Kaleideum staff, board of directors and community leaders. And, after weeks of stay-at-home orders and discouraging news in the media, this announcement was a most welcome breath of fresh air for the Piedmont Triad.

“The Children’s Museum and SciWorks, now Kaleideum Downtown and Kaleideum North, have always been wonderful resources to the Forsyth County community,” said Mark Dunnagan, Vice President of Blum. “Through the years, these facilities have been special places for the employees of Blum Construction and our families. We continue to treasure the memories made there, and we look forward to creating new memories in Kaleideum’s new home.”

The new building is a public/private partnership with Forsyth County, which committed $30.5 million toward the project. The City of WinstonSalem is contributing $2 million for the Liberty Plaza demolition and renovation. “We are very thankful for the generous funds that are financing this project,” said Dampier. “These funds will help us create a magnificent place of learning that will be enjoyed for generations to come.”

The building concept is grounded in the idea of experiencing spaces and places from diverse perspectives. Two primary materials are used on the exterior – smooth, colorful metal panels and highly textured precast concrete panels. The design is inspired by the geometric forms and triangulated shapes captured in a kaleidoscope, the instrument of art and science upon which the museum’s name is based.

“The exterior of the building will offer interesting viewpoints of light, shadow and color based on the time of day and the vantage point,” Dampier said. “It’s going to be a visual experience, even from the outside.

“The new museum aligns the visitor experience with Kaleideum’s mission by creating a welcoming, visible hub for the community,” said Brad Burns, Gensler Design Director. “The building concept, grounded in the idea of experiencing spaces from diverse perspectives, integrates the natural environment and provides flexible spaces that allow for a wide range of learning experiences. One of the most unique aspects of the museum is the multi-level rooftop exhibit experience that provides opportunities for learning, play and fantastic views to surrounding areas of downtown and beyond.”

The new family destination will be a link between the arts and cultural district to the north and the more historic and civic district to the south, and it will be flanked by two public spaces, Merschel Park and Liberty Plaza. When completed, the new museum will anchor the southern end of Merschel Park, a downtown open space to the south of where Trade and Fourth streets intersect.

The project site is also a highly accessible location at the corner of 3rd Street and Town Run Lane, and the new building will sit on the site of the former Sheriff’s Building, an office building that has been demolished because of limitations that would not

“As a native of this community, I can vividly remember visiting the then Nature Science Center in the mid 1980s and how it sparked a sense of wonder and an excitement for learning,” said Adam Sebastian with STITCH Design Shop. “Through the innovative use of form, materials and color to provide compelling visual effects, the new Kaleideum building embodies the spirit of the City of Arts & Innovation while embracing Kaleideum’s mission of inspiring wonder, curiosity and lifelong learning, and providing a safe and welcoming place for our entire community to learn and dream together.”

Construction on the new Kaleideum building is expected to begin in summer 2021 with an anticipated opening date in Spring 2023.

Helping Kids Develop Imagination and Creativity

Where

would we be without vision, creative ingenuity, and artistic license? Our lives wouldn’t be very happy or exciting. Einstein recognized this, saying, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Both sides of the brain are important. If we neglect one side—like the right brain—we might end up losing our sense of color, texture, and wonder.

Children need to be encouraged to harness their innermost creativity and exercise their imaginations. Whether or not they become a visual or performing artist, or instead, a scientist, doctor, or lawyer, is no matter—every child needs exposure, early on, to imagination and creativity to develop fully.

Why not encourage kids to exercise their creativity and to express themselves artistically, whether creating works of art, writing their own song, book, or doing some other creative activity? Activate their imaginations and don’t box them in or limit creativity with too many rules and “Don’ts.”

An important way of helping children develop and grow in their communication skills, as well as their right-brained qualities, is to integrate books (in different formats—written, audio, and video) into their daily lives. Collect books and magazines as a mini-library and let them choose their favorites. The more they can be read to or read themselves, the more they will learn, develop, and grow. Helping children pronounce words correctly and define their meaning expands vocabulary and helps them become faster learners and better communicators.

Kids are known fidgeters and may not make it all of the way through story time, so make the activities entertaining to accommodate tiny attention spans. Kids can listen to music and/or make their own. Incorporate song and dance to get kids vocalizing musically and moving. Teach them the basics of music, give them instruments to play and the opportunity to make their own.

Let kids tap into their healthy imaginations and explore their creativity with a canvas or blank paper. Let them draw or paint (in any medium) whatever is on their mind or in their heart, and ask them to share the story behind it. Write down what the artists say about their work and ask for permission to share it with the group. Stage an artists’ showcase to display kids’ work, and encourage them to walk around and survey their own gallery exhibit.

Help kids write their own book, e-book, song, or poem, and share their art with others. Make sure you have everyone’s permission ahead of time, since some artists may not want their work included; it’s up to them. Kids can choose to sign their work, create it anonymously, or just initial and date their creation.

How about an informal, impromptu, or wellplanned and rehearsed talent show or open mic for the kids?

They can write their own program and invitations. Get the crowd excited as you introduce each talented performer and share a fun fact about each one. Kids can introduce themselves, announce what they are performing and tell the audience what they love about the talent they are sharing. Keep it simple, short, and sweet. Prepare them with an “encore” piece in case the audience wants to see more, and reward each performer with a fresh flower and thank them for a great performance afterward.

Offering regular opportunities to perform, whether giving a presentation, reading a book to others, or performing in talent shows or open mics can help

kids overcome shyness, make them braver, and build their confidence. Having a positive experience with stepping outside their comfort zone, connecting with an audience, and overcoming performance anxiety can be beneficial for future life experiences.

As adults, our role in parenting, teaching, and mentoring our young ones is vital to their growth and development. I probably wouldn’t be a writer or author today if I had not been encouraged to read books every day as a child. Exposing kids early to freely cultivating their own unique inner creativity can make a positive difference in their lives. Foster a healthy, active imagination and creativity in each of your children. Enable them to live better lives!

Do You Have Test Anxiety?

comes a time during the academic school year that is quite daunting: the “End of Course” test. You have studied, learned the material, and aced all of your homework assignments, projects, and papers related to that test. You even feel confident about this day, but when the moment finally arrives, you have heart palpitations, sweaty palms, nausea, headaches, and suddenly you forget all the knowledge you’ve retained throughout the year. “How did this anxiety sneak up on me like this?”

effectively and be prepared. It is easy to give in to self-doubt in such a high-pressure situation. But negative self-talk breeds the heavy insecurity that impacts our ability to test well. The more positivity you feed to your mind, the better you will perform. Speak positive outcomes and believe what you say and watch it become reality: “I will pass this test…I will remember what I learned…I am intelligent and I know the answers…I am calm and confident about this exam.”

A student can be extremely bright and intelligent but may not test well due to a fear of failure, so they suffer test anxiety. This is a type of performance anxiety that stems from a fear of failure, which interferes with one’s ability to recall memorized information and also the ability to perform well on a test. Those with test anxiety often inundate their minds with negative—and untrue—thoughts such as, “I’m not smart enough to pass this test,” “I know I’m going to fail, I can’t remember anything.” Although it is natural to experience nervousness before a test, those with test anxiety suffer nervousness to the highest degree. Along with the physiological reactions mentioned above, they also deal with diarrhea, shortness of breath, and light-headedness. It can even go far as having a fullon panic attack.

RELAXATION STRATEGIES. Learn how to meditate and practice positive imagery (visualizing calm and stimulating scenery). Practice deep breathing to diminish any anxieties you have. If you believe in the power of prayer, pray, pray, and pray that you will remain calm and perform well on testing day!

If you suffer from test anxiety, here are several ways to combat it… and pass that exam!

PREPARE WISELY. We all know the golden rule: get a full night’s sleep before a test and eat a fortified breakfast to wake up your brain. But here are some other effective helpers: • Study in a calm state of mind. If you study with nervousness, you will test with nervousness and will not perform well as a result.

• Actually learn the information rather than merely memorizing it.

Learning the material will help you connect to it more and recollection goes a lot smoother while taking the test!

Memorization is good, but chances are you will forget what you locked in your memory right after you take the test.

• Study groups will forever be helpful! Other peers will help you see the course material from various perspectives, which will help deepen your understanding of the topic.

• Don’t cram! Cramming causes most people to perform worse.

POSITIVE SELF-TALK. Remind yourself that you are capable and intelligent, that you are bigger than this test, that you will study

WATCH YOUR HEALTH! When stressing about a big test, we tend to neglect our physical health, which causes even more stress.

Remember to exercise regularly, eat healthy, and get adequate sleep. This is paramount for maintaining a healthy body and brain!

(Pro tip: no caffeine during studying or right before a test. Caffeine is an anxiety inducer. Opt for peppermint tea instead!)

STAY RELAXED DURING THE TEST. A relaxed brain can recall information faster and more efficiently. Take your time, ask questions, and stop and breathe if you have to. Stay focused! Watch your pace, and please don’t focus on how quickly others seem to be flying through the test with ease. Those who finish before you won’t necessarily score higher than you will.

REMEMBER, NERVOUS ENERGY IS A MOTIVATOR! Nervousness is only a sign that we want to do well. So, instead of feeling like we’re going to fail, we should channel that same energy into helping us do our best.

Even if you don’t perform as well as you wanted, just remember: a simple test grade doesn’t reflect your intelligence or self-worth. A test grade is simply an indicator of confidence, of how much you really believe in yourself.

Dear Friends, Last year, Christy and I led the inaugural RISE Against Domestic Violence Campaign for Family Services. We raised over $60,000 and brought 180 new donors to Family Services. With this success, it was easy to say yes when Family Services asked us to lead the effort again in 2020. In case you didn’t know, Family Services has been around for more than 100 years and continues to do very important work in Forsyth County. For example, they serve more than 3,800 victims a year. They have managed the Domestic Violence Shelter since 1988, and last year provided safe shelter to 188 women and children. The community need is great, and with the first year’s success of RISE, we knew we could have an even bigger and better 2nd year!

Then … COVID-19.

Nothing has been the same, and it seems as though it will still be a while before things are able to return to some sense of normal. As small business owners, we understand the toll this pandemic has had on the economy. Like many of you, we are living month to month, adjusting as we go and trying to figure out the best way to stay healthy, keep our customers and clients safe, and remain in business.

However, these uncertain times have not diminished our passion for the work of Family Services. Just the opposite.

We know once we emerge from the pandemic, the services needed by the community will be even greater.

On a Zoom call with Family Services, we were told the number of hotline calls was down during the onset of COVID, and we initially thought that was good news. Then they explained the calls were down because the abused were now trapped at home with their abuser. For these victims, the already small window of opportunity for help had just disappeared.

James Clavell once said, “All stories have a beginning, a middle, and an ending, and if they’re any good, the ending is a beginning.”

Stories are all around us. For many people, they provide familiarity, comfort, and a sense of peace when things in reality get hectic. The tales can come in the form of books, recipes, and memories. One of the most common type that attracts millions of people are television shows. When we fall in love with a show’s plot, we become attached to the characters and their lives. We end up rooting for them and hope they live happily ever after. Unfortunately, all shows have to end with a finale. Hopefully, that finale ties up all the characters’ plots and loose ends. Some do just that, but other shows may still leave us hanging. Let’s take a look at the TV show finales we can’t forget.

M*A*S*H – Titled “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen” the finale of the timeless series M*A*S*H garnered over 106 million viewers in 1983. The episode’s plot is centered on Hawkeye Pierce and the others saying goodbye to the Korean War. They know they are heading their separate ways after many years together dealing with the realities of war. “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen” wraps up the series’ 11 years on the air with a balance of comedy and drama that brought tears to many viewers.

The Sopranos – A simple search online can show the audience’s shock that came with the finale of The Sopranos.

The episode, “Made in America,” gives viewers a last look at the lives of the Soprano family. Patriarch Tony’s life of crime with the mob has him in hiding and in trouble. Over the course of 60 minutes, the lives of Tony Soprano, his family, and acquaintances are completed. However, the final scene of the series left many viewers with theories on what exactly happened to Tony. In the last few minutes, the Sopranos meet in a diner. As the family catches up, a mysterious man enters, as well as Tony’s daughter, Meadow. Yet, the shock comes when the screen cuts to black after Meadow arrives, a bell rings, and Tony looks up.

Cheers – Another long running classic is Cheers, a story about a Boston bar and its frequent occupants. Fans were hoping for the reunion of Sam and Diane Chambers when actress Shelley Long appeared in the finale. Although this didn’t happen, Sam did return to his other love, his bar. Viewers are given the closure they hopefully needed when the show ended with the final words “Sorry, we’re closed.” But, for many, this didn’t mean the bar would be permanently closed; instead it would stay open forever, at least in our hearts.

Friday Night Lights – For years, people followed the tale of Texas high school football coach, Eric Taylor, his wife Tami, and the others in the small town of Dillon. Challenges are faced as the team heads towards the football championship and the Taylors are at a crossroads with deciding on where to go from here. “Always” finishes with the Taylors realizing it is time to move to Pennsylvania and follow Tami’s new opportunity.

Seinfeld – Sometimes TV shows don’t finish in an expected way. Sometimes they take a twist and turn the plot into something completely out of the ordinary. Speaking of which, the finale for the hit series Seinfeld starts out with the gang heading onto a plane and setting off for Paris, before Jerry and George leave for California. Things take a turn when the airplane needs repairs, leaving the friends in an unfortunate situation that places them in jail and awaiting trial. The episode received mixed reviews and became the fourth most watched series finale in the U.S. behind M*A*S*H, Cheers, and The Fugitive. 76.3 million people tuned in to the conclusion of Seinfeld.

We all have our favorite TV show finales that complete the characters’ plots and sometimes leave the viewers wanting more. However, the one good thing to remember: TV shows are like books. You can watch them over and over again and experience those well-known feelings once more. That way, the story will truly never end and be just another beginning.

The Offensiveness of the Gospel

our world continues to fight amongst ourselves – arguing about who is wrong, who is right. Who is offensive and who has been offended. While we weigh pros and cons of various sides, trying to make it through the minutia of conflicting information, it becomes hard to know right from wrong. And nothing has escaped the microscope of offense.

A few months ago, a series of brands announced their plans to change their image, including Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben’s, Mrs. Butterworth’s, Cream of Wheat and Land ‘O Lakes. This article isn’t about whether this is the right or wrong move. I’ve seen both support and outrage over this. And, as I’ve thought about it, I can’t help but think of how we as Christians have been doing this same thing for years…trying to re-brand and re-package Christianity, so we don’t come across as judgmental, insensitive or offensive.

But, the Bible IS offensive. There are verses upon verses that speak of it, including 1 Peter 2:7-8 which says, “So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and ‘A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.” But, let’s table that…

Here’s the thing – we want to win souls for Jesus, but we don’t want to tell people they are sinners. That would offend them. So, we focus on the love of Jesus. I don’t disagree that Jesus’ love is worthy of discussion and a valuable tool in evangelism… After all, it was the love of Jesus that kept Him nailed to a cross to die a horrific, grotesque and agonizing death – for us. And, there are some who, unquestionably, will come to faith in Christ solely based on His love.

And, that’s wonderful!

Amazing! We need to celebrate them!

But, I want to show you today why we can’t re-brand Christianity entirely and we can’t worry about offending others with it. As previously stated, the Bible already says people will be offended, so we can’t solely focus on “God is love.”

We can’t leave out important details like these: • We are all sinners who deserve death.

• We can’t earn our way to heaven.

• We are all in desperate need of a Savior.

Those are things we don’t want to talk about. After all, no one likes to be told they are wrong…that they aren’t enough…or that they can’t rely on themselves. Yet, I think of the words of Alice Cooper – yes, that Alice Cooper. He is a devout Christian, and he said in an interview once, “I needed the hell scared out of me – literally.”

Here are the problems we face when we sanitize our evangelism too much: • Pride can’t be humbled into humility when people aren’t made to understand how much they need Jesus.

It’s not enough to simply WANT Him – we have to understand that we also NEED Him. • Sinners can’t repent when we don’t fully appreciate our wrongdoings and how disdainful our sin is to a Holy God. And repentance isn’t just saying, “I’m sorry.” Repentance is about changing behaviors and turning away from sin. How can we change if we don’t understand the magnitude of our offense?

• People can’t become fully dependent on God for everything if we don’t realize our desperate need for Him. • People can’t fully appreciate God’s love until we understand His mercy and grace. There are some who need to understand the depravity of their sin before they can truly appreciate the magnitude of God’s love.

The Apostle Paul wrote the majority of the New Testament and while he wrote often of God’s love, he never skirted the issue of this truth: We are all sinners who need saving and that salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone. Ephesians 2:8-9 are my favorite verses and are the verses that inspired the name of my blog. They say, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Paul also wrote, “I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some” (1 Corinthians 9:22b). He met people where they were. He didn’t try to present Jesus in a way so others wouldn’t be offended. Given how many times the man was beaten, flogged, stoned and even the way he was executed by beheading – I think we can all agree that plenty were offended by his words. But, he focused on speaking truth. And, the truth of the Gospel, includes both God’s love as well as His demand for justice.

Usually, when we refer to “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” we stop. But, let’s look at the verses that follow in Romans 3:23-26: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

It’s not about our goodness, it’s about God’s. Our sin caused a chasm that God Himself, in His love, rectified. And, to fully understand that, we have to understand that His love isn’t because we deserve it… We don’t. But, because God is good and loving and merciful, He gives it.

As we continue in our efforts for evangelism, and try to brand Christianity, let us remember that it’s more than “God is love.” It’s about “God is merciful,” too.

Not the physical wounds that break bones and cut your skin…I’m talking about the deep wounds that penetrate to the inner parts of your heart and soul.

The Bible warns us that in this world we will have trials and trouble. We expect that from the world and really aren’t surprised when those things happen. But what happens when it’s the church, the body of Christ that has caused your pain? Those wounds have a way of cutting to the deepest parts of our souls and often take the longest time to heal, sometimes leaving permanent scars that last a lifetime.

In my (pastor’s) family, these wounds caused some of our worst suffering because they came from sources we were not expecting. These wounds, not inflicted by the world or our enemy, instead were inflicted by the very ones we have shepherded, cared for, wept with, and rejoiced with. These hurts cut the deepest. These wounds, inflicted by the Body of Christ, our very own brothers and sisters, felt like betrayals that ran deep- and often came when we were already weary and struggling. It’s like being on the front lines of battle and being shot by friendly fire.

Can we do better? Can we be the one that shows love and encouragement as we care for the hurting? Look for an opportunity to speak life into your pastor’s family and let’s not give Satan the satisfaction of seeing the Church take aim at our own.

Journeying with

Jesus

Karl Barth, the famous Swiss theologian once said “Take your Bible and take your newspaper, and read both. But interpret newspapers from your Bible.” Perhaps if Barth was with us today, he might replace “paper” with “app.” But, his point is well taken. We don’t do Christianity in a bubble. It is not a “private” religion, but one to be lived out in a community (the church) in the midst of a larger community (the world).

And, we are called to look at the issues of our day through the lens of Scripture and avoid the temptation of letting our newspapers interpret the Bible. With that in mind, I invite you to join me monthly and wrestle with what it means to journey with Jesus in the world in which live.

So, what does it look like to be a Christian during the COVID crisis? Should Christians act, think or be any different than anyone else during this time? Peter, one of Jesus’ closest confidants wrote to the churches scattered throughout the ancient world to “be holy in all you do.” Holy means to be “set apart.” Paul was exhorting them to be different than the nonChristians who surrounded them. To act in accordance with the character of God. One recent author says this might come across at times as “weird.” Like if you find yourself caught up in a neighborhood gossip jam and refuse to engage in badmouthing a neighbor. You might be considered different, odd or yes, even weird, but weird in the best of ways.

So, how might we act “weird” when it comes to our current situation? Since a core teaching of Jesus is that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mk 12:31) how might we “do” the pandemic differently than a person who hasn’t committed to Christian living? I think in part we ask the question “what act or set of behaviors (love) benefit those around me (neighbors) most? Simple, right? Maybe to understand but hard to live out. Biblical love always takes sacrifice.

Sacrificing our desires, our needs, our wants for the good of another person/people. Let me offer a silly example. If you told me that you have podophobia (the fear of feet), and you were coming to my house for dinner, the most loving action would be for me to forgo wearing my Keens. I love my Keens. In my will, I am going to ask to be buried in them.

Sure, perhaps they are no longer fashionable but they are comfortable and keep my feet cool. But, what act benefits you most? For me to sacrifice my “right” to expose my tootsies, so I don’t inflame your foot fear. My love and concern for you should outweigh my desire to wear whatever I want to in the privacy of my home. Well, I think you already know where I am going. Yes, the mask debate.

I have some Christian friends who are making this issue about “rights” and “freedom.” As wonderful as those ideas are particularly for us Americans, these concepts, at least in how we understand them today, are foreign to the biblical writers.

For example, when Paul talks about freedom in his letter to the Galatians, he means that a Christian is no longer bound to dietary laws or to rituals such as circumcision in order to be right with God. Jesus settled this at the cross. But, we shouldn’t use our newfound freedom from such obligations to indulge our desires but rather to “serve each other humbly in love.”

Honestly, I hate wearing a mask. It’s hot. It’s uncomfortable.

But, I give up my “rights” of comfort to protect others from illness, particularly the most vulnerable. It’s not heroic, but it is a sacrifice. A small but significant way we can love our neighbor. To strongly encourage others to do the same might come across in some segments of our society as plain weird.

But, weird in the best of ways. I believe this is in part what journeying with Jesus looks like during a pandemic.

Healthy & Delicious After-School Snacks

a long season of being home, it’s time to get back into the swing of things when it comes to feeding kids. To support a fresh and exciting rotation of after-school snacks, we’ve combined a list of fan favorites that keep life simple, clean, and delicious.

READY IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES: Ants on a Log Slice each celery stick diagonally into 2-3 pieces, then slather approximately one teaspoon nut butter of your choice on each piece.

Replicate “ants” with dark chocolate chips, raisins, or chia seeds to make a miniature garden jungle.

A Nutritious Cinnamon Roll Smoothie Blend 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, one-third cup oldfashioned rolled oats, 1 cup ice, 1½ frozen bananas, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon maple syrup.

Chocolate Avocado Pudding In a food processor, combine the 2 ripe avocados, 2 bananas, 6 tablespoons cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a dash of cinnamon to blend until smooth. Transfer the pudding to 2-4 small bowls to serve with fresh raspberries and additional chocolate shavings.

Zested Lime Guacamole & Tortilla Chips Give your traditional guacamole a breakthrough flavor boost by mashing 2 ripe avocados in a small bowl, then mixing in the juice of 1 lime, 2 tablespoons freshly chopped cilantro, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, and salt to taste. Serve with whole-grain tortilla chips for the ultimate savory satisfaction.

UNDER 15 MINUTES: Italian Sub Pinwheels For one serving size, place one tortilla flat on a clean surface.

Spread a thin layer of plain hummus over the tortilla, then layer with 2 slices of turkey, 1 slice of provolone cheese, and 2 slices of salami. Evenly layer on some sweet pimentos, banana peppers, and fresh spinach. Carefully roll up the tortilla with the delicious fillings, then secure four even sections with a toothpick. Slice between each toothpick to create four Italian sub pinwheels.

Cookie Dough Energy Bites In a food processor, combine 1 cup rolled oats, 1 cup (pitted and chopped) dates, 1 cup roasted almonds, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon sweetener (maple syrup or honey). Pulse until chopped and then process until ingredients are finely ground. Add up to 1 tablespoon olive oil, if the mixture is too dry. Transfer to a bowl and fold in ¼ cup mini-chocolate chips. Tightly press and roll together 1-2 tablespoons of batter per dough bite. Makes approximately 20 dough bites. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Apple Dipper Smorgasbord Using a clean 12-cup muffin tin or 10-12 small bowls, place the following ingredients in individual cups: 2-3 apples (cored and sliced), ¼ cup cottage cheese, ¼ cup peanut butter or almond butter, ¼ cup jam or apple butter, ¼ cup yogurt, as well as a handful of shredded coconut, pumpkin seeds, mini-chocolate chips, and bite-size-sliced cheddar cheese. A delicious mixture of textures and tastes to let your kid(s) be creative with their combinations!

Chocolate-dipped Frozen Banana Skewers Simply slice each banana lengthwise into bitesized pieces, then press a small skewer into the center of each slice. Dip each slice into melted chocolate, then transfer to a flat dish lined with parchment paper to freeze for at least 25 minutes.

Enjoy now or transfer remaining banana skewers to a freezer-safe bag to store in the freezer up to one month.

Zucchini & Cheddar Savory Muffins Preheat oven to 350F and lightly grease or line a 12-cup muffin pan. In a large bowl, mix 3 cups all-purpose flour, 2½ teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 large egg, 1 cup milk, and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and whisk just to combine. Then, stir in a finely chopped spring onion, 100 grams reduced-fat cheddar cheese, 130 grams grated zucchini, and (optional) 1 tablespoon freshly chopped rosemary. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin to fill each cup about ¾ full.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

Allow the savory muffins to cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes, then completely on a wire rack. Store leftovers in an airtight container up to three days.

Who knows? Maybe you’ll find a few new favorites above or even become inspired for your own ideas that will become a new staple.

Well, Aren’t You Crafty?!

we are in September, and nothing much has changed. We are still dealing with a virus which has upended our normal way of life. We have very limited social interactions, vacations and trips have been canceled, many schools and businesses are still closed. Our grandchildren are missing their friends, the ability to go to playgrounds, pools, camps and the fun summer brings. Not surprisingly, it seems most children want to go back to school, but, for many, they will still be learning virtually.

Virtual or remote learning is nothing like being in a school classroom, and it leaves many idle hours that need to be filled. If, as a grandparent, you will be taking care of your grands during this time, this article will provide you with a number of crafts that may fill some of your time together.

1. I love this first one: Two of my daughters did this with their children, whose ages range from four to 12. Using different colors of chalk and masking tape or blue tape, map out a design on a large concrete space, such as a patio or driveway. After it is all marked off, let your grands start coloring inside the tape with chalk.

Not only does this occupy hours of their time, but after all the spaces are colored in and the tape is pulled up, their hard work will come to life. Take pictures during the process, so they can see what they accomplished little by little and from start to finish.

2. S tring art is another fun craft. I would use this with the older grands if they create their own design using a hammer and nails, tacks or another item that string or yarn can be wound around. A younger child might enjoy doing the winding of the string if the prep work is done ahead of time by you. In researching this project, you will find beautiful designs that range from simple to difficult, but it is your grandchild’s imagination that will determine the outcome.

3. With most craft stores and dollar stores open, you can stock up on many different items to keep the creative juices flowing. Put a smock on the younger ones, and let them paint. Cover a table with an inexpensive plastic tablecloth and get a roll of packing paper. Use non-toxic washable paint or markers, or finger paints, and watch the fun they’ll have.

4. Tissue paper crafts take many forms. This is another one that works with different ages. Where the youngest will like tearing and gluing to make their picture, the older age groups may use it to form shapes, make a picture, or cover an object.

5. Popsicle sticks have myriad uses. From frames which can be painted or decorated, to more difficult or time-consuming projects like constructing a bridge, house or other design.

There are ideas for holiday decorations, learning tools, animals and so much more.

I like the next two suggestions because not only are they fun, but they include some exercise, as well: While you are out walking, have your grands collect a few rocks that they can paint, and then add a message, date or design. Later, on another outing, you place the rocks in different locations where, hopefully, someone will find them and place the rock in another spot to be discovered. Your grands can take a picture of each rock they place and make a map, so that they can look again to see if the rocks are still there or have been moved.

The next idea involves a special sun or solar paper that can be found at most craft stores, or can be ordered. After collecting interesting shapes or objects found in nature while taking a fun hike, they are laid on the paper and left in the sun. The image is then transferred to the paper. Many times, these prints are artistic enough to be frame-worthy.

These ideas and many more can be found by searching the Internet. It is not only something fun and different for your grandchildren to do, but is a special time for you to have with them.

Why Am I Not Popular?

We’ve

all known them. The good-looking, charismatic, impeccably dressed kids who were smart, but not too smart, cool, and trendy. Maybe you were one of them. Or maybe you were among the unnoticeable kids who just wanted to be acknowledged by the “cool ones.”

High school is a unique experience for all of us. We were either popular or unpopular. We were either the sociable, trendy kids whom everyone wanted to be friends with or the nerdy, plainly dressed kids who were always denied access to the “cool kids’ table.” Our social experiences from high school impact our social experiences in adulthood. For instance, if we were popular in our adolescence, we will likely be happier and more successful in life.

Whereas those who were unpopular are likely to face social isolation, depression, and (social) anxiety. Social acceptance is more powerful than we think it is! But it does not have to overpower us.

Popularity can be broken down into two elements: status and likability. Let’s look at these elements in depth.

POPULARITY BY STATUS Some folks are popular because they are high in status. These high-status folks are either highly accomplished, have connections with influential or locally famous individuals, hold high authority positions, have many accolades, or all the above. People like this can attract a huge following because of their status, but may not be very approachable, relatable, or likable. For example, a very accomplished young woman who has been recognized constantly for her work and is connected with so many influential people may lack the proper social skills or the relatability to truly connect with others. This may cause her to have very little likability or charm.

These people can only get so far up the ladder, but being likable takes them a little farther.

POPULARITY BY LIKEABILITY Other people may gain popularity because of their strong likeability. These likable folks may not necessarily be high in status, but are especially friendly, charismatic, outgoing, unassuming, and nonthreatening. They are the type who are adored by everyone in class or on the job, likely for being agreeable and super relatable. They don’t have a reputation for being uppity or pretentious. Likable people naturally draw a large crowd because people want to be around them. In contrast, many people may want to be around high-status people because they are attracted to who they are on the outside. Perhaps they want to say that they are friends or associates of high-status people because it ups their image.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? When we look back on our social experiences in high school and even in middle school, perhaps, would we say they have an impact on our lives now? Have we overcome those many social rejections growing up and managed to lead a happy and successful life?

Or did we let that high school popularity get into our heads and let it quantify our self-worth even as adults? As mentioned at the beginning, our popularity levels during school years can have an intense impact on our social lives and successes as adults.

The belief is this: those who were popular in their adolescence are likely to be happier in life and more successful. Whereas those who were unpopular are likely to be plagued with anxiety, depression, and more failures and setbacks than their counterparts. Although this has proven true for many, that does not have to be everyone’s reality. Our social experiences shape us mentally and emotionally, but our popularity level should not determine our fate. It is how we respond to such experiences. For instance, if we grew up unpopular, we can overcome our social woes and anxieties with time and follow our passions and see where they take us.

WHICH IS BETTER? Status or likeability? Likeability is usually preferred over status, but status is also a big deal according to today’s culture! The science behind popularity suggests that to achieve optimal popularity, one must have a steady balance of likeability and status. Although popularity isn’t everything, it is important to know the science around it to determine how to make it work in our favor or overcome the “curse” of unpopularity. What is most important is the impact we have on others.

This article was inspired by Mitch Prinstein’s book, Popular: The Power of Likeability in a Status-Obsessed World (2017).

School 2020:

Making the Best of this Reality

say the least, 2020 has been strange. Headlines have amazed me. Uncertainty has engulfed me. As a long-time educator, I had to reframe everything I had ever done in the name of teaching when the lock-down started.

Then in July, our schools announced we will start the year with virtual learning. Another huge change for us all. With our world spinning and changing so very quickly, I did not want to overlook anything or anyone. The only thing I knew to do was look, listen, and learn.

I saw you, single mothers, who are sole providers for your family and so worried about how to continue this way. I noticed you, working parents, who need to go back to work but aren’t certain what to do with your children. Some of you aren’t even sure if you’ll even have a job to return to. I observed those of you so concerned about their children stuck at home because you want them to have all the experiences of their ages. I empathize with the fearful, who are so unsure of what could happen, they want to do all they can to protect theirs. I felt your pain, fellow educators, so incredibly torn by the job you graciously gave yourself to, and the fear of the unknown. Social media has sadly become the place to express all this raw emotion. But I believe that what often comes out as daggers is genuine confusion and uncertainty manifested in harsh words. We are all hurting. This is hard.

Thankfully, the ultimate decision was not mine. We all have needs, we all have opinions and undoubtedly people are disappointed. The question now becomes, “Where do we go from here?” We do what is best for our children, all of them.

While the answer is very simple, implementation is a little more difficult. No matter our level of disappointment, we must remain positive for the sake of our children. Our emotions, our actions, and our words affect children in more ways than we realize. Children take cues from trusted adults. What we

feel impacts them. Honestly, giving adult fears to kids is not fair. Children have enough to worry about as they learn new concepts, figure out how to navigate social interactions, and have all the experiences they can. Our concerns, though valid, are not their responsibility.

Instead of disappointment and dread, wouldn’t it be remarkable if we could spin this in our own minds so our words are genuine? Instead of focusing on what we are missing, what if we looked upon this as an adventure? I remember the one and only camping trip we took as a family. Five of us in one tent. It didn’t just rain all weekend, it monsooned! But, what I recall was how fun it was playing in the rain, hiking, and trying to cook over the fire. It was such an entertaining, unique experience for me. Only as an adult did I realize how incredibly miserable my parents must have been. To their credit, I had no idea. We did not pack up and leave because things didn’t go as they planned. We stayed, we played, and I remember it as a great adventure.

Is it possible to begin this year with a similar perspective? To be sure, this isn’t what we planned. But, I believe it could be a great adventure for our children if we set the stage for that to happen.

I learned early in my teaching years that if I was enthusiastic about something, my class was excited about the very same thing.

Some of us are rolling with the punches and may not have much to lose; some of us are scared to death for our health and finances; some of us have children with special needs; some of us don’t know how we will make all of this work. It’s scary and it’s uncertain. But what if, for our children’s sake, we put on a brave face for the next few months and show support and even a little excitement about our newest adventure?

l l i r G e h t m o r f s Goodnes As we are all spending more time outdoors lately, it’s a great time to fire up the grill with family. From chicken to turkey and refreshing drinks to enjoy, here are some of our favorite kid-friendly recipes to enjoy outdoors by the grill!

THAI PEANUT CHICKEN SKEWERS

TURKEY FAJITA FOIL PACKETS

RASPBERRY PEACH LEMONADE

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. Chicken tenders (threaded onto small skewers)

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS: ¼ cup agave nectar

Salt, pepper, soy sauce (to taste)

4 Turkey breast cutlets (or chicken), cut into bite-size pieces 2-3 Bell peppers, cut into strips

6 oz. raspberries

FOR THE SAUCE:

1 Onion, cut into strips

3 medium peaches, sliced

½ cup creamy peanut butter

1 packet taco seasoning

1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

¼ in. piece fresh ginger (minced)

A few dabs of butter

6 cups water

½ Tbsp. brown sugar

Aluminum foil Soft tortillas

DIRECTIONS:

1 Garlic clove (minced) 1 Tbsp. lime juice

DIRECTIONS:

½ Tbsp. fish sauce

1. Arrange two 18” strips of foil in a crisscross fashion. Place turkey into the center of the top layer and sprinkle with half of the taco seasoning.

1 Tbsp. soy sauce ½ cup coconut milk or water Fresh chili, cayenne pepper or chili sauce (to taste) (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Season the chicken with salt, pepper and soy sauce. Heat the grill (or cast iron pan over medium high heat on the stove). Grill the kabobs until chicken is done, about 4-8 minutes per side.

2. While the chicken cooks, whisk all sauce ingredients in a small bowl. For a smoother sauce, place all ingredients into a mini-food processor or blend with a stick blender. Add more coconut milk or water if the dipping sauce seems too thick.

3. Serve the chicken skewers with dipping sauce on the side.

2. Place the pepper and onion strips on top of the turkey and sprinkle on the remaining taco seasoning and top with the dabs of butter.

3. Close the foil tightly and grill for about 30 minutes or until the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165° F. Alternatively, bake in a 400° F. oven for 45 minutes or until turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165° F. 4. Open the foil packet and stir ingredients to mix the taco seasoning into all ingredients and serve on soft tortilla shells.

1. I n a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup water and agave over medium heat until the agave dissolves, about 1 minute. Add raspberries and peaches. Stir occasionally, bringing it to a simmer until raspberries have broken down, about 5 minutes.

2. C ombine the raspberry-peach mixture in a blender until smooth, about 1 minute. Cool completely and strain through a cheesecloth or fine strainer.

3. I n a large pitcher, whisk together raspberry-peach mixture, lemon juice and 5 cups water. Refrigerate until chilled.

4. S erve over ice and raspberries.

Bonus points if served in Mason jars!

SICK DOG? Ask These Questions!

Long stares or the absence of an ordinarily affectionate dog leads to worry. In wanting to ensure good health, the owner’s first step is to answer a list of vital questions!

Is there a distinct change in energy levels?

“Slothfulness” and “sluggishness” are rare terms to describe a four-legged friend.

This symptom alone is a condition of the circulatory system. Dog lovers must be aware of the nutrition levels within a brand of food. Brands differ from flavor to flavor; therefore, the label can help you find the right ingredients to support body functions and temperature, leading to a boost of energy levels.

• Modifying meal times and frequency can impact blood sugar and serotonin levels.

• Commit to a daily routine of exercise, including long walks, off-the-leash runs, and games.

• Hip dysplasia is a hereditary condition affecting the hips. Consider supplementing your dog’s diet with a veterinarian-grade chewable version of glucosamine chondroitin to ease arthritic pain.

How is the interest in food?

The Alpha has (i.e., you have) a vital role in a dog’s well-being. The caregiver has a more detailed knowledge of eating and daily habits than anyone else in the household. The slightest change in meals immediately raises a “red flag” of warning, especially if a dog walks away from food or wants to eat, but noses through the morsels. It could be only stress, environmental changes, or an upset stomach; factors which resolve within 24 hours. Try an alternative diet for 24 hours, comprising boiled chicken breast, white rice, and low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth.

A blockage of bowel movement or the effects of diarrhea and vomiting require an examination.

Beyond two days, the refusal to eat more than two meals is uncommon. One possibility is a dental disease resulting in bad breath and pain. Check the mouth for red gums, a broken or loose tooth, or severe gingivitis.

Any difference in the consumption of water?

A canine’s body structure is quite similar to a human’s. Liquids reduce the temperature for fevers. The presence of contaminated water may deter interest. Since water is a direct link to health, its vital that fresh water is available at all times.

Is there a new symptom resulting from a prolonged thirst?

Excessive dehydration may lead to additional symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or fever. Repeated gagging, sneezing, or coughing, for instance, are signs linked to an allergy or infection.

Veterinarians can pinpoint problems if it’s an infectious disease, such as rabies, periodontitis, or Parvo, or a disease related to the hormones or kidneys, or diabetes.

Knowing the timeline and symptoms will help determine the diagnosis and treatment. Be prepared for a question concerning your dog’s stance when urinating. Descriptions of a hunched back, yelping cries, and blood are all reasons for immediate care.

Is there a snap or growl when touching a particular area of the body?

The act of petting is more than just a symbolic display of love; it allows the Alpha to discover a tick or bite, dry skin, or an area of discomfort. If the response is a show of teeth, the attempt to bite, or a deep, long growl, Identifying the location can lead to relief.

• Check the ears for a yellow or brown discharge that may cause allergies, excessive moisture, or overproduction of wax. A shake of the head encourages the softened wax out of the ear canal. Use a cotton ball to wipe it out.

• Skin allergies are often attributable to environmental factors, such as pollen, grass, dust mites, indoor heating, and air-conditioning. Excessive licking or scratching indicates a need for treatment.

While you can use specially formulated shampoos and provide a Vitamin E supplement or oil, some dogs require an annual shot to resolve problems.

Prevention As a pet, a furry friend’s health changes with age. Through daily interaction and care, you can combat illness. Awareness of the symptoms is just one way to prevent a prolonged illness. Even 10% of healthy pets have an underlying disease only noticeable through preventative care screening. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian!

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

Saving for a Special Occasion

When

I was growing up, my mother used to do something that I didn’t readily understand as a young child. She used to have company, or show, towels. Now, many of you know what I’m talking about. Those towels that you were never supposed to use and were for guests only. They were always clean and neatly pressed, and sometimes had frilly flowers or some other type of design that was uncomfortable on those occasions when you did try and dry your hands on them. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t mind that mom did that.

It showed that she cared about how her home looked when others came to visit. After all, there’s nothing wrong with having pride in your home and family.

The thing is, I did it myself when I first moved out of the house and into my very first apartment.

I don’t say this as good or bad; just that I, too, wanted to put off a clean vibe for my guests, only mine had Mallard ducks on them.

To this day, I have certain shirts that I really like. The problem is, I don’t wear them often because I don’t wish to wear out the fabric in the wash. Okay, I know that may sound odd, but I’m sure if you think hard enough, you’ll find you probably have something special that you don’t use as often because you want to keep it looking new. No… just me?

Okay, I’ll own it.

The good news is that as I grow older, I’ve begun to realize just how fast life passes by. I’ve learned that it isn’t worth not taking advantage of those things like your nice China (Ahh! See, I knew there was something you were saving for a special occasion.) Life throws enough crap our way over our lifetime; it’s only right that we appreciate those things that bring us joy while we can, and they’re not dry-rotted from lack of wear.

I think that’s what impresses me most about something I read. It referenced how Millennials are more into the experiences of life than into accumulating material possessions. I’m not sure how long this lasts, or whether it’s

just a life stage thing for them. Regardless, I like that they’re in the moment knowing there will be time to collect things as they go along; they don’t have to have everything all at once. And the experiences they’re having and the memories they’re making are often way more emotionally and sentimentally valuable than actual material things anyway.

It’s a fine line we walk between being careful with our things and enjoying them to the fullest. With our lives as they are today, however, haven’t we all learned the value of enjoying those good things in life while we can? Sheltering in place helped make us aware of just how much fun shopping can be (I say this as a man who’s not a big fan of shopping), going out to eat and seeing a movie in the actual theater, or enjoying a sporting event with our friends. It’s time we got out the good dishes and just had a nice regular Wednesday night dinner with our family in the dining room, as opposed to on trays in the family room while watching television. Our family has started doing this since the beginning of the stay-at-home orders, and it’s turned out to be pretty nice, as you might expect.

We talk to each other more without our phones interrupting.

We also learn more about each other.

I’m not naive enough to think this will go on permanently. I’m sure, in time, we’ll gradually migrate back to our comfortable spots in the family room with our food trays, and enjoy TV again during dinner. But for now, as Carol Burnett used to say, “I’m so glad we had this time together.” (Minus the virus reasoning, of course.)

So, if you’re not doing this already, I encourage you to give it a try, if only to just break up the monotony. Oh, and wear that perfume you’ve been saving, and that nice shirt or outfit you’ve stored in the back of the closet. We all deserve to enjoy something a little special right now.

with the Arts Council and the “MASK-UERADE Parade” in Winston-Salem

On

August 9th, The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, the first arts council in the country, hosted a virtual “Mask-uerade Parade” launch party for its community-wide MASK designing competition. The competition will support the Council’s 2020 Community Fund for the Arts campaign.

The event was the brainchild of Arts Council Board member, Holly Pavlika. Philip Powell of the Little Theater and Eric Dowdy of EDO Media volunteered their time arranging for live streaming of the event. The launch party was hosted by Talitha Vickers of WXII and featured entertainment by local artists and arts organizations who graciously donated their time and skills in artwork, dancing and music.

The MASK designing competition will culminate with the MASK-UERADE virtual parade on September 19th. There will be winners named in several categories. A mask entered into the competition must be an original creation that can be painted, sewn, welded – use your imagination. The submission must include a 30-second video or photo which will be featured on the Council’s social media accounts. All of the submissions will be compiled into one video and streamed on September 19th as a virtual PARADE OF MASKS! The winners will be selected by a panel of judges.

Eryn Crews, the Council’s director of annual giving observed “as we struggle through these challenging times, we remember that the arts and our amazing arts constellation in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County are a part of our community’s very foundation.” Arts Council President Randy Eaddy said, “Participating in the virtual MASK-uerade parade launch party and parade, which people can do safely with friends and neighbors, and giving generously, is a great way to show support for the arts community.”
