Welcome

to North Carolina and our crazy, erratic weather! The time of year when you’re not sure if you need to wear a sweater or shorts. From the blossoming trees and daffodils peeking their heads out, one would certainly think spring has already sprung.

Perhaps the groundhog was right this year and we will have an early spring, after all! But if I know NC weather, we are not finished with winter quite yet. I think I will keep my sweaters and warm PJ’s handy for just a little while longer.

However, I might get a chance to break out the shorts early, as I have a long weekend trip planned to Florida in March. Going with my hubby to watch a couple spring training games.

Fingers crossed for typical warm Florida weather and hopefully it will help abate my spring fever that I started experiencing in February. It should be a nice teaser until I make my annual pilgrimage to Florida for summer vacation. I think I have mentioned many times in the past

Xavier Harris, a second-grader at Brunson

Elementary School in Winston-Salem, NC, has some challenges, like many of us in life. At the age of 22 months, Xavier became part of Evan and Kim Powell’s family, as he was beginning to show signs of developmental issues; he was evaluated to see if speech therapy would be beneficial. He soon began therapy with Robert Evans, Speech Pathologist in Winston-Salem.

A few months later, at the age of 2, Xavier was diagnosed with autism. “Xavier would scream if most people even looked at him, and his sensory issues were off the charts. Robert was so calm and patient with Xavier; they had a connection. In the beginning, there were many hard sessions; eventually, with time, Robert changed Xavier’s life and believed in him and pushed him and us as a family. Robert was the first of many therapists that avier would have over a period of five years, and we are extremely grateful for Robert. We love him immensely and being able to share in this special experience with him meant so much to us,” said Kim. You see, Robert Evans was chosen to be a contestant on Deal or No Deal and Xavier, along with his family, traveled to Universal Studios in Orlando, FL to surprise Robert during the show’s taping.

When the producers of Deal or No Deal contacted Kim last summer, she initially thought Xavier would be part of a videotaped message to Robert that would be shown during the taping. But as the time for Robert’s appearance got closer, the producers decided to fly avier and his family to niversal Studios in Orlando to surprise Robert in person on the show.

“We told Xavier that he was going to be on the show and he was excited. He really wanted to surprise Robert. Every day he

would ask when he was going; avier was excited to fly and stay in the Universal Studios resort. Plus, he was happy to share the experience with his big brother, Parker. Xavier, Parker, and I went to Florida for the taping. Because it was going to be a quick trip, my husband stayed home to babysit our daughter, Arielle,” Kim commented.

Xavier had a great time hanging out at the resort with his family, but his only complaint was that the trip wasn’t long enough to visit Universal Studios Theme Park. “Xavier summed up the trip as ‘a dream come true.’ He has told everyone he comes in contact with about being on the show and he had family and friends all over the country watching it. We have received so many phone calls, messages, and comments on how far Xavier has come and how well he did on the show, and it all started with Robert, his speech therapist,” stated Kim. Sometimes we can go a lifetime and never know the lives of those we have made a difference in, but Robert Evans is well aware of the little boy he helped and of the changes in Xavier’s life and the life of his family. If, by chance, Robert had any doubt of how he helped one special little boy, all he had to do was look over and see Xavier and his family cheering him on as he won $185,000 on Deal or No Deal. Xavier was Robert’s lucky charm for sure!

Bangs, or a long, swooping fringe are the best way to change up your look with a sassy statement, and we can design a look all your own,” stylist Krista Crafton commented. And you don’t have to go up in your style or have bangs, [so] don’t forget about the braids!

“Light, whimsical braids wrapped into long airy tresses are also a very popular look this season,” stated Acacio Da Silva, master stylist. So once you know the look you want for your hair, the fun continues with the make-up, to pull the look all together.

“Make-up trends for 2019 are color blends with a soft, subtle, nude palette. The “pow” in popular make-up looks are luxurious, long lashes and a loud lipstick color to give your eyes and lips a pop! Think lip colors like burgundy, vibrant reds, and bright pinks. The key to take any look from basic to glamorous is lipstick! And always remember to take your lipstick wherever you go, because you never know when you may need a touch-up,” Christi said. All this sounds like a lot of fun, but getting ready with friends makes the day of the prom even more special, and you and your besties can all go to Aeracura Salon together before the big night.

are many dining options when it comes to prom night, but very few offer the convenience, quality, and atmosphere of Jeffrey Adams on Fourth.

Already a popular location for those looking to enjoy a night on the town throughout the year, in the coming months, prom-goers from high schools across the Triad will be dazzling their dates with fancy dinner invitations before the dancing begins.

Several of the large high schools in our area host proms in downtown locations such as the Benton Convention Center and the Millennium Center. Both of these venues are practically within walking distance from Jeffrey Adams. Additionally, there is a convenient parking deck located right behind the restaurant for those who will be ditching the limousine in favor of chauffeuring their dates themselves. But location and convenience are not the only reasons Jeffrey Adams is a hotspot for prom nights; the menu has something for everyone, from the pickiest of eaters to those who consider fast food a staple.

Co-owner Adam Andrews suggests making reservations as soon as possible, because prom nights are typically very busy—and booking early, especially if you have a large group. “We are known for taking larger parties…we have a private dining room downstairs in the wine cellar,” related Adam.

About 20-30 kids can be accommodated in there.” This is a fantastic option for those groups sharing limos and looking to have a nice dinner together before heading over to the prom. However, those looking to keep it

small and sweet can also make reservations for smaller tables upstairs.

Hands down, the best part of dining at Jeffrey Adams on prom night is the food.

This time of year is great because some of the produce from Adam’s farm is ready and integrated into the menu. “Tomatoes will start coming in then, so those dishes will include our farm tomatoes,” mentioned Adam. “The tomato and mozzarella salad is always a popular option. Our summer pasta will be back on the menu by then with angel hair, pesto sauce, wild mushrooms and fresh veggies from the farm.”

For those looking to impress, there are several steaks available. Of course, there are also lighter options like chicken wraps. “Our seafood risotto will be back on the menu in the spring,” confirmed Adam. This is perhaps the most popular main dish at Jeffrey Adams.

And, the pot roast nachos are likely the most popular appetizer. For dessert? “Our cheesecake is really popular…Chef Nick makes it in-house,” explained Adam. “Our dark chocolate crème brûlée is also great.”

7 Reasons Summer Camps are GREAT

With

the brief months of summer approaching fast, many parents find they are now faced with a new task: keeping their kids responsibly looked after and entertained. While many turn to babysitters for parental supervision, summer camps are another popular choice, due to the wide variety of options available, including traditional camp, surf camp, basketball camp, and even film camp. Here are seven reasons summer camps seem to trump other childcare options.

1. THE ENVIRONMENT IS WELCOMING.

Camps, even the non-traditional ones, are very supportive. They encourage kids to be who they are and to know who they are not. For instance, basketball camp isn’t for everyone, but even players with very little skill are still welcomed. Camps teach kids to acknowledge their weaknesses and to work to be better, not to be the best.

2. TRY A NEW THING.

Camps encourage kids to venture out of their comfort zones and have new experiences. However, they also teach them how to persevere through activities they know they do not care for with good spirits. It’s important for kids to discover new habits and to respect ones that others like, even if they themselves don’t.

3. LEARN INDEPENDENCE.

Camp counselors are really good at giving kids the right amount of rein. Should a traditional route be taken, this newfound

independence might be first discovered on a canoe ride. With no one else to row, the kids hold the paddles themselves and decide which end of the lake to explore.

4. LEADERSHIP SKILLS

There are born leaders and born followers. The right influence separates leaders from dictators, and prevents followers from having submissive attitudes.

Camp is a great place to learn how to be in charge and carry the group, not just yourself.

5. STAY ACTIVE AND INTERACTIVE.

With so much technology available, kids can be guilty of staying cooped up inside, choosing only to play video games and text their friends. Camps show kids how to have fun outside without technology, and how to spend quality face time with friends.

6. MAKE GREAT FRIENDS OUTSIDE OF YOUR NORMAL CIRCLES.

It’s easy to fall into social cliques at school, excluding certain kids from your group. However, at camp, there are kids from all walks of life that are forced to be on teams together, to bunk together, and to eat together. It’s much more difficult to exclude people at camp, forcing kids to make lifelong friends outside of their normal circles.

7. TEAMWORK

Camp is commonly a competition. There are lots of games and teams. Camp counselors face off, and kids collaborate to win these games. Whether it’s editing a video, scoring a goal, or racing canoes, kids are practicing teamwork to accomplish those tasks.

Maybe it’s the connection between the counselors and the campers, the close friends, or the games they play, or maybe it’s none of that. Either way, camps seem to build character and strong moral principles in children, offering parental influence in a fun and enjoyable way. It’s no wonder parents and children everywhere opt for camp when summer rolls around.

Saturday, January 26th, the Diamonds Are Forever Gala was held at Old Town Club in Winston-Salem. Over 140 guests attended the 3rd-annual event that benefits the Piedmont Wind Symphony.

As guests arrived to the James Bond-themed gala, they were presented with chic martinis in an elegant diamond ambience, while the music of various James Bond films played. Food was provided by Old Town Club, which included a carving station and a scrumptious Southern touch—a shrimp & grits bar. Entertainment was provided by the Camel City Jazz Orchestra Ensemble.

The evening was set for a night of fun and games, as guests enjoyed a live and silent auction with great experiences and items, which also included a raffle for nothing less than a diamond necklace. Blackjack and roulette were set up for those to have at their luck.

The evening’s title sponsors for the gala were Drive Flow and Windsor Jewelers.

The Piedmont Wind Symphony also receives operating support funds from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

Anthony Tang was the Board Chair and also the evening’s Emcee. Other Board members included Alton Absher III, Karel Chandler, Michael Coil, Bill Crouse, Jonathan Hamiel, Ashleigh Hargrave, L.P. Hill Guy Kelpin, Harold Kennedy, Ryan Layton, Maura Marziano, Amy Taylor North, Mark Vaders and Ann Walker.

The Rye Foundation Funds Special Camps for Special Children

summer months approach, camp is an experience looked forward to with eager anticipation. A chance to get away from home, have new adventures, and meet new friends! But for some—it’s a chance to heal. To mend broken hearts. To find familiarity again and common ground with peers who understand hurts that many of us cannot imagine.

Several North Carolina camps offer that kind of opportunity, in part due to support from The Rye Foundation. Based in Winston-Salem, the organization derives its name from its focus on religion, youth, and education. This philanthropic group has given over $1 million in gifts, and they are committed to supporting North Carolina camps. Some of the gifts the Rye Foundation has given have gone to support programs that are designed to help children who have faced tremendous loss and hurt. These are children who have lost parents in public service, those who need grief camps, children who have a parent in prison, or missionary kids who are in the States on furlough. Some of the options include: • Camp Corral is a YMCA-supported camp designed for children who have lost a parent or step-parent on the battlefield, or in public service.

It’s also open to children who have a parent who has been injured in the line of duty. These children have experienced tragedies that are almost too heavy to bear. Having a peer group, as well as professional counselors, in a camp setting, is a way to alleviate the burdens. It offers solutions to help them cope when they return home from camp.

• Brighter Days Children’s Grief Camp is sponsored by Mountain Valley Hospice of Mount Airy and has received funding from The Rye Foundation. The program is for children who have lost a parent or sibling. The therapeutic environments are supportive and safe places for children to remember and process their grief in healthy ways.

• Camp Caraway offers a special opportunity each summer for children who have a parent or step-parent in prison. These children face a unique set of challenges in this burden. Between conflicting emotions of hurt and sorrow, as well as confusion, these children can experience camp and interact with people who are trained to help them process their unique situations.

• Merriwood Christian Camp offers ongoing scholarships and financial aid for MKs (Missionary Kids). Those children who are in the States on furlough with their parents are given an opportunity to experience traditional camp in a way they would not be able to on the mission field.

These programs and others are made possible by generous donors, including the monetary gifts bestowed by the Rye Foundation. Led by President Warren Steen, the organization’s primary mission is to leave a legacy. Steen reflected on the words of author Bob Buford, who wrote, “Americans spend a large portion of their lives trying to be successful.

And then, many start trying to be significant.”

Steen shared that sentiment and continued, “Our role at the Rye Foundation is to find people who want to be significant and leave a legacy that allows these special camps to continue, and helps fund them, so that more children can experience the normalcy of camp.

What better legacy can there be than to help a child develop his or her talents and reach their full potential? Especially when that child is carrying emotional burdens no child should have to carry.”

One of the Rye Foundation’s most prestigious awards, the Ray Bryan Award, is based on its namesake’s belief that, “God has a special plan for each child.” To that end, the Rye Foundation perpetuates that mission by committing $100,000 to honor the memory of Mr. Bryan, including the funding of a unique camp opportunity in Herford, NC, at Camp Cale. The recipient of a $25K grant, this camp has developed a program that will allow 9th- and 10th-grade students to receive extensive spiritual training in a “Leaders of Tomorrow” model. Those students would then be eligible to return as counselors in the 11th and 12th grades.

Camp programs are alive and well in North Carolina, and programs like these are so much more than arts and crafts, canoe rides, and horseback riding, though there is no disputing the importance of those activities. From Mount Airy to Middlesex… and from Hendersonville to Hertford…The Rye Foundation supports these camp initiatives that change lives. One child at a time.

The

Bautista family is just one of many, many examples that the SECU Family House, a hospitality house for both patients and caregivers from outside of Forsyth County receiving care at Winston-Salem hospitals, is such a tremendous gift to our community.

In early 2017, just hours after dinner celebrating Felix Bautista’s 28th birthday, his wife Holly woke up to find him not feeling well and exhibiting signs that something was definitely wrong. She called 911, and later at the hospital, it was determined that Felix had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. He was given a 10-20% chance of living. Felix defied those odds by a long shot, but during his medical struggle spent 61 days in the hospital here in Winston-Salem. Holly stayed at the SECU Family House, giving her a caring, restful place to stay that was just minutes from the hospital.

“Knowing that I had a safe, comfortable and affordable place to sleep at night that wasn’t far from the hospital was huge,” Holly said. “Not only that, but it provided peace of mind for my husband as he was recovering.”

Their story—and so many others—continually reinforce the need for, and appreciation of, such a facility in our city. And major fundraising events like “Men Who Cook”—coming up on March 16th at Bridger Field House—support the work that the House does and the love, care, and shelter that it provides 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The event—now in its 4th year—brings together local male amateur chefs and their cooking teams, who battle it out to please the taste buds of nearly 400 hungry attendees. Participating chefs come from all sectors of the WinstonSalem community, from banking to clergy, lawyers to realtors, higher education to local media, and everything in between.

“We are thrilled that this event continues to be one that garners such wonderful support for our House,” said Kathy Carr, Executive Director of SECU Family House. “The kitchen is definitely the heart of our homes, and meal preparation is such a large part of the services that Family House provides its guests. We love bringing families together over food, and we couldn’t have found a better way to celebrate our mission of providing assistance to adult patients and caregivers who are going through difficult health crises.”

The Family House, which is conveniently located near Winston-Salem’s two major hospitals and their surrounding medical clinic areas, has served as home base for folks from 95 North Carolina counties and 42 states and has welcomed more than 32,000 overnight guests since opening its doors in 2011. When families come to our area with their loved ones for medical treatment—whether planned or in emergency situations—the Family House provides a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere for rest, food, community and more.

There is a small overnight fee for guests, and a Family House assistance fund is in place, thanks to faithful donations and events like the Men Who Cook fundraiser.

Each year, Men Who Cook chefs create their own recipes, ranging from appetizers to desserts, and may utilize a sous chef during the event. They provide samples of their fares for attendees to enjoy, and for several prizes to be won.

Early online voting will be available, as well. Last year alone, the Men Who Cook event raised nearly $140,000 for the SECU Family House!

Women Who Care invites anyone, ages 6 – 18 (with legal guardian/parent) and ages 19 and older to the Lions Club Mobile Eye Screening Unit at Clemmons United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 6, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Participants will receive a free blood screening, glucose screening, eye exam and menu ideas for an eye-healthy diet. Spanish interpreters will also be available to assist with language translation.

Women Who Care would like to thank Dr. Baker and the Eye Care Center on Stratford Road for their gracious offer to provide services for part of the day. Women Who Care would also like to thank the nurses who are providing free blood pressure and glucose screenings and Davie County Storehouse for Jesus for glucose screening kits secured

Best known for wearing his loveable sweaters and always singing, “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood,” Mister Rogers connected with many people throughout the world with his kind and comforting personality.

Born on March 20, 1928, famous television personality Fred Rogers lived his life as a musician, writer, producer, puppeteer, and Presbyterian minister. Rogers went into television because, as he once stated, “he hated it,” and didn’t like what programs were currently on TV. After graduating from college, he worked at NBC before returning to his native Pittsburgh to work at a local television station. During this time, Rogers developed The Children’s Corner, went to seminary and the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Child Development. After Pittsburgh, in 1963, Rogers went to work at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the idea of a show about Mister Rogers was born.

From 1968 to 2001, Fred Rogers was a staple on American television, hosting Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Through 895 episodes, Mister Rogers welcomed everyone from all walks of life into his home. Regular neighbors of Mister Rogers were the “Speedy Delivery” man Mister McFeely, Lady Aberlin, the baker Chef Brockett, and the singing policeman, Officer Clemmons, plus more.

In addition, famous guests visited the neighborhood, including Bill Nye the Science Guy, the Dance Theater of Harlem, and marine biologist Sylvia Earle. According to the official website of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the show “took us by hand and together we learned about ourselves, others, and the world around us.” For many people throughout the world, that statement rings true.

Throughout the decades, Mister Rogers gave the world many lessons about friendship, being confident in ourselves, understanding our feelings and the world around us. In addition, his wisdom related to the topics of helping others, welcoming and valuing everyone, and appreciating our similarities and differences. Lastly, Mister Rogers taught his viewers to wonder, explore, and be curious.

He showed us that we should be open to new experiences and that it is okay to talk about difficult subjects. For these lessons, he consulted with Dr. Margaret McFarland, a well-known child psychologist, who helped Mister Rogers make sure his scripts were in line with true concerns and feelings of children.

These messages, such as the ones below from the many quotes by Mr. Rogers, will always resonate with people: • “Love and trust, in the space between what’s said and what’s heard in our life, can make all the difference in this world.”

• “In every neighborhood, all across our country, there are good people insisting on a good start for the young, and doing something about it.”

• “We all have different gifts, so we all have different ways of saying to the world who we are.”

• “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

• “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

The wisdom of Mister Rogers will continue to influence many generations to come. Think about how we could change the world if we all put these messages to use in our own lives and the lives of those around us. Imagine what would happen if we told people the same statement Mister Rogers said at the end of every show: “You’ve made this day a special day, by just you being you. There’s no person in the whole world like you; and I like you just the way you are.”

Advertiser’s Tricks to Capture Children’s Attention

Today’s kids are running the world.

Notwithstanding the effectiveness of parental control apps, a traditional children’s strategy for getting what they want still works, namely, by asking for it. Breakfast, lunch, clothing choices, family entertainment, trips, and excursions are all influenced between 95 and 98% of the time through a child’s recommendation. Children also affect 75% of software and 60% of computer purchases. Advertisers, thrilled by such affirming statistics, rely on children to pester their parents for a product.

THE TECHNOLOGICAL GENERATION The arrival of the “swipe” of a technological device first began as an experiment. Apple marketers gave one-year-old children Blackberries and quickly learned their first engaging act was to swipe their fingers over the screen. Perhaps adults assumed the “swipe” was for ease of access; however, marketing saw it as the most effective tool to soothe a fussy toddler.

Marketers knew once Dad or Mom handed a child an Internet-capable device with lights, music, sounds, and the ability to manipulate objects, the tool would result in a purchase for each child in the household. The problem escalated when a child requested day and night the fastest and newest model. Parents are less likely to say no when they, too, benefit from a child’s willingness to sit quietly and still.

BOMBARDED BY ADVERTISEMENTS Adults understand marketing schemes much better than a child, who believes most products are needed immediately and can justify with a list of at least five reasons. After viewing the same ad numerous times, children respond by assuming the item is, after all, essential.

As ads target a child’s developmental, emotional, and social vulnerabilities with

up to an astounding 5,000 ads daily, marketing companies are winning the quest to appeal to children. Since many strategies reach their target, major food companies, for instance, use appealing websites, multimedia games or videos to sell their least-nutritional cereals.

ADDITIONAL WAYS ADVERTISEMENTS ARE EFFECTIVE.

What are the solutions?

• Technological devices need strong parental controls, limiting a young child’s viewing beyond “regular programming.”

Help children to recognize the traps of appealing sights and not to divulge private information.

• Teens can receive text updates through mobile alerts from their favorite shows. This approach, unknown to the buyer at signup, fosters additional ads from companies who have bought your children’s information.

• Positive mascots or memorable jingles can carry a positive perception from childhood through adulthood. Not all fun foods are healthful; therefore, talk openly about brands and why advertising wants its consumers to believe it is a beneficial product.

• Products such as Lucky Charms and the Happy Meal offer YouTube videos.

Because the animated videos are enjoyable, they emphasize the product through its virtual world.

• Parents must be aware of the ease with which children can access adultrated games, movies, and music.

Downloading a kid-friendly app, such as Kidoz, can prevent children from viewing inappropriate content and ads.

• A social networking music site, Spotify, feeds off of social acceptance by publishing a teen’s listening activity on Facebook.

• School systems allow fast food or soft drink companies to offer their products in the system’s specific district.

There are so many options, and you often question what the best choice will be. All parents want their children to have a good education, but it’s about more than that. You want your children to have success in education and in life. At Calvary Day School, they understand how important this is and are preparing students for success beyond their doors. For 45 years, Calvary Day School, also known as CDS, has served this community with a comprehensive, Bible-based, educational program. PRESCHOOL Children two years old through Pre-K attend classes for 2, 3 or 5 days per week from 8:15 am to 12 pm. The program provides a wide range of multi-sensory and group activities designed to help children learn science, math, art, reading readiness, and music through ageappropriate play and games.

KINDERGARTEN The kindergarten program is designed to allow children to be children, with the freedom to explore and learn in an active, hands-on environment. They focus on developmentally appropriate curriculum while individualizing the experience based on each child’s academic needs. This year, they will be adding an additional kindergarten classroom.

LOWER SCHOOL The Lower School is where a foundation for a love of lifelong learning begins. Students in grades K through 6th are provided with the tools to strengthen their skills in phonics, reading, spelling, grammar, math, science, writing, and Latin vocabulary. Interwoven with the core curriculum are the Biblical teachings and specialty classes. Each week students will participate in computer lab, music, art, chapel, P.E., and work in the media center to provide a complete educational experience.

UPPER SCHOOL The Upper School is where students begin to define their individual path to success. Critical thinking and academic knowledge are the basis for daily learning, as they navigate through the challenging, but rewarding, college preparatory curriculum. God-centered education, specialty classes and technology integration also help to make a wellrounded experience.

SCHOOL RESOURCES CDS is dedicated to helping their students succeed, and the 100% graduation rate speaks for itself. They provide a variety of resources that help pave the way to success. Beyond the college preparatory curriculum, they provide guidance and college counseling services, tutoring, technology and 18 middle school, JV and Varsity sports.

Mr. Van Wade, Principal of the Upper School, spoke about the college preparatory program. “Being a college preparatory school, Calvary Day equips students for college with 37 honors courses and 12 AP courses. College admission representatives repeatedly celebrate our students as well prepared for the rigors of college, and they actively want CDS students in their educational institutions. Students take rigorous courses intentionally designed to direct them into vocational areas of interest. Chemistry and physics courses are taught by former engineers with over 50 years of experience in that field. Students receive hands-on lab experiences by teachers who have participated in the workforce before becoming teachers.”

The guidance counseling department has services available to help each student throughout his or her education. They provide classroom guidance, individual and small group guidance, academic guidance, developmental screening, consultation with parents and teachers, and when needed, referrals to outside professionals.

College counseling services begin in the 8th grade and are provided to help families and students navigate the complexities of college admission.

All students are carefully guided in building their profiles as they grow and learn about the talents and gifts that set them apart. The staff has extensive knowledge about college admissions and stays aware of relevant changes by meeting with admissions advisors, going on college tours and attending professional conferences every year. They also host several college workshops designed to simplify the process of admissions and scholarships. And they are really making a difference for families. In 2018, 52 graduates of CDS received more than $7.4 million in scholarships!

Students are also given the opportunity to receive tutoring to help them in any area of need. Mr. Wade spoke on this resource as well. “Every day, teachers stay after school for tutoring sessions with their students. Students do not have to sign up ahead of time. Teachers give of their time each day to help tutor students where they need help in their specific disciplines.”

Technology is another resource that helps students prepare for the future.

Each student has access to a chromebook 1:1 in high school, a computer lab with a 3D printer, interactive smart boards in every classroom, virtual reality goggles and electronic balances. As technology changes, the students at CDS will be prepared to use and understand it.

At CDS, it’s not just about academics. They also provide a wide range of opportunities for students that excel athletically. Mr. Wade said, “The sports program at Calvary Day School offers 18 different Junior Varsity and Varsity teams.

CDS is a member of the Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference and the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association. Past teams have won the state championships in girls’ soccer and Varsity baseball.” Many student-athletes go on to play collegiate level sports and receive scholarships to do so.

A DIVERSE WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT

One unique aspect of CDS is the diverse student population. Mr. Richard Hardee, Head of School, spoke about this. “The CDS student body consists of students representing 118 different churches and multiple denominations, and applicants from other faith persuasions are welcome to visit our campus to see if the CDS Christian education curriculum is a good fit for their family.”

Another component that adds to the diversity is the representation of several ethnic groups, and they have an active international student population. Mr. Hardee went on to say, “One unique aspect of our student body is that we have 24 international students living with host families and other students whose parent country is not the United States. The presence of these students greatly enriches our school community.”

SCHOOL OF SERVICE

CDS is proud to be a school of service. Starting with the 2-year-olds in the preschool classroom and all the way through 12th grade, students participate in service projects that benefit the community. Every year students participate in more than 3000 hours of community service, and the Senior class goes on a mission trip to Costa Rica to serve and share the gospel.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALUMNI

Tommy McCollum, Jr., CDS Class of 2018, currently attends Wingate University. He received the Presidential Academic Scholarship as well as an Athletic Scholarship for baseball.

When asked how CDS impacted his life he said, “Calvary Day School taught me how to live my life in a modern world while maintaining my personal values. They were invested in

me and recognized the areas I excelled in and challenged me in areas where I needed to grow and develop. They celebrated my personal and academic success while taking the time to develop strategies with me to overcome my personal and academic shortcomings. They care!

During graduation, I wasn’t celebrating leaving high school behind, as I know the investment the school made in me will remain with me for a lifetime.”

Forsyth County Assistant District Attorney Molly-Catherine K. Goodson is a graduate of Calvary Day School Class of 2007. She went on to attend Liberty University (LU) where she received a B.S. in Government: Western Legal Traditions, an M.A. in Human Services: Children, Families and the Law and a Juris Doctor. At LU, Goodson received academic scholarships, scholar-athlete recognition and a cheerleading scholarship. With the Forsyth County D.A. Office, Ms. Goodson serves as the domestic violence prosecutor. In addition, she is an Adjunct Professor at Regent University.

When asked how her time at CDS impacted her life, she said, “My time at Calvary Day School taught me at a young age to prioritize my life in such a way that put God first. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for man.” This mindset of working hard for the glory of God instead of the praise of man challenged me as I went to college, graduate school, law school and started my career, because my focus was not on what “success” I could obtain, but rather how God would use my life to bring Him glory. I am grateful for the years I spent at Calvary Day School, surrounded by peers and faculty that taught me, encouraged me, and challenged me to pursue God and His calling in my life. To this day, almost twelve years after graduating from high school, I still feel the support and prayers of the Calvary Day School staff.”

The Driving Course That Saves Lives

If

you are a parent, turning the car keys over to your teenager can put your nerves on edge. Your fears are well founded—car crashes are the number-one killer of teens, ages 16-19, and every year car wrecks kill about 2,200 teens, and find another 220,000 in the emergency room. Sadly, among passengers of all ages, 20 percent of fatalities occur when a teen driver is behind the wheel. Tragically, Doug Herbert, professional drag racer, found out how real these statistics are, when in 2008 he received the phone call no parent wants to get…his 17-year-old son Jon had been driving recklessly and crashed his car. In the passenger seat was his 12-year-old brother, James. Both of Doug’s sons were killed in the wreck.

As a professional drag racer, Doug knew the importance of safety, and he decided it was time that teens learn, too. Doug started B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe), a 501 (c) (3) organization, with a mission to prevent injuries and save lives by training and educating teenage drivers and their parents about the importance of safe and responsible driving.

“Doug recognized that teens weren’t being taught all the necessary skills at the basic driver training level, so we reviewed DOT statistics to identify the key causes for teen crashes and built our curriculum based on those findings.

We monitor the latest crash studies and update the information being taught to our students,” said Matt Reilly, director of operations for B.R.A.K.E.S. and a veteran professional racer.

Herbert and Reilly are confident the program is making a difference. A study

Paul Friday, compared the driving records of B.R.A.K.E.S. graduates to NC teens without similar training, and found that teens who had completed B.R.A.K.E.S. training were 64% less likely to be in a crash in their first three years of driving.

Some of the skills that teens who participate in the B.R.A.K.E.S. programs learn are, how to handle unexpected situations on the road, realizing that driving carries a large responsibility, and understanding the consequences of making bad decisions. Teens go through courses including skid recovery, crash avoidance/slalom, distraction, panic stops, and drop-wheel recovery.

All courses are taught by professional instructors, some are retired racecar drivers and law enforcement officers, with a 3:1 student to instructor ratio.

B.R.A.K.E.S. also emphasizes that teens aren’t just at risk behind the wheel, but are also at risk in the passenger seat.

Unlike most teen driving courses, B.R.A.K.E.S. gets parents involved, as well. “We require parental involvement.

This is not a ‘driver’s ed class for teens.’

This is an advanced program. We teach parents how to help their teens in this new phase of their lives. Also, parents get to experience some of the same driving courses as the teens, to understand what their kids are learning and to help reinforce the lessons,” Reilly commented.

The B.R.A.K.E.S. program is offered Saturday and Sunday at various locations.

Each class is 4 hours and in each class, 180 teens are trained. Chris and Pat Koontz’s son, Alex, of Clemmons, NC, participated in B.R.A.K.E.S. seven years ago and to this day the lessons learned have stayed with the family.

“The B.R.A.K.E.S. experience was

informative for Alex and for us as parents. The one exercise where each kid is instructed to text while driving was a real eye-opener. To this day, Alex does NOT text and drive. The results of over-corrections, the #1 killer of teens in NC, was a shock to him as well. Chris and I learned a lot about how cars are constructed, like how important properly inflated tires are. We highly recommend the program to our friends,” commented Pat. After their experience, the Koontz family shared what they learned with Donna Kamper and she took her daughter, Savannah, to the course in Raleigh, NC. “Three years ago, Savannah was a new driver and got to experience driving conditions on the B.R.A.K.E.S. course she hadn’t yet encountered. Driving with ‘beer goggles,’ to see what a drunk driver sees, was eye-opening. I think every young driver should experience B.R.A.K.E.S. The staff and instructors made the program fun and informative for parents and teens,” Donna said.

“The first year we were in operation, we trained 50 teens. To date, we have trained over 35,000 teen drivers. Some of the cities we visited last year were Atlanta, Charleston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Memphis, Raleigh, San Diego, Scottsdale and St. Louis. Classes are free to all, but we require a $99 refundable deposit to secure your reservation. At the end of the program, you can take your deposit with you or donate it to the program. The program is supported through donations, golf tournaments, a gala and grants,” stated Reilly.

a former hairdresser whose favorite pastime in retirement involved shopping for the next pair of comfortable black leather shoes, held a secret most friends never knew. For the past 20 years, Kelly has perused catalogs in search of a short-haired, yellow-blond acrylic wig. Chosen also for its lightness in weight and permanent style, the wig hid a hereditary hair-loss condition termed “Androgenetic Alopecia.”

Auto-Immune disorders, hormonal imbalances, and chemotherapy can cause patches or complete hair loss. Many women who are affected, like Kelly, wear a wig to eliminate the stigma of stares or curious questions. Not only women, but girls, boys, and men may decide to don a wig, either for the empowerment of emotional confidence or a need for normalcy.

A Priceless Donation Jean, a resident in Winston-Salem, began the effort of deep-cleaning her home closets, a task requiring the removal of items and wiping down shelves with a wet cloth. She elicited assistance from her daughter to ease the overwhelming task of deciding which items should be kept, donated, or discarded. Not knowing what she might find, Jean rediscovered a box containing a wig. She immediately wondered who would appreciate the donation and find it useful. Knowing it never hurts to inquire, she contacted Cancer Services of Winston-Salem. Relieved to learn the agency had a need, Jean knew her donation would help others.

The Wig Boutique Willonda Thomas accompanied her mother, Conita Hunt, to Cancer Services in the summer of 1988 after a diagnosis of stagefour inflammatory breast cancer. Thomas remembers, “It was an emotional time when we arrived. My mother had beautiful hair and took pride in her appearance. Of course, she already was going through so many emotions due to her recent diagnosis. In the Boutique Room, there were shelves of various types of wig hair styles and colors. The patient advocates at Cancer Services helped my mother feel beautiful while considering the type of wig she wanted. For a couple of minutes, she was happy.” Willonda Thomas, currently a Marketing and Development Director at the agency, views Cancer Services as a community of caring people who have served cancer patients for over 60 years.

Thomas shares, “We are not the only service agency in the Piedmont Triad that addresses these needs for all types of cancer patients. The Boutique is [just] one of the many services that we provide to cancer patients at no cost.”

Cancer Services of Winston-Salem As a community advocate especially for cancer patients, the non-profit agency is usually not needed until it becomes a recommended resource. As a local service, they aim to help clients regain a sense of personal control, whether an appointment is scheduled or an individual walks through the door.

Cancer Services needs the community’s assistance. Volunteers who believe in a mission to provide the best service to cancer survivors and their families may assist in the office, on special projects, or performing fundraising activities. Similarly to Jean, who wondered if they would appreciate her wig, your local Cancer Services agency will assure you that it relies on gifts to offer the best resources; perhaps support could be found through your donation!

Closing the Opportunity Gap in Forsyth County

Education has long been the door to opportunity and the pathway to prosperity in America.

“The American Century” was made possible by the establishment of the universal public high school, which began around 1910. At that time only nine percent of Americans had a high school diploma; by 1940, the number had increased to 50 percent.

Other innovations have followed. In 1981, North Carolina became the first state to require kindergarten to be offered to all children. Winston-Salem can claim honors as the site of the nation’s first public arts conservatory with the opening of the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1963. And high school students today are earning college credits before graduation through advanced placement and dual enrollment.

Despite these innovations, achieving the American Dream has become a remote possibility for too many, especially for younger generations. An “opportunity gap” has opened up, as documented by Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam in his book, Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis. Putnam found that: …over the last 30-40 years, there is a growing gap for the opportunities and resources between those kids coming from affluent and welleducated homes, and opportunities and resources for those kids coming from poor, less-educated homes. The point of my work is to say, ‘Here’s the reality.’ Now, how do we go about changing our current reality to move us back more towards the reality of the American Dream?

The opportunity gap is widest in Forsyth County.

A 2017 study by two Harvard economists found Forsyth County to be among the worst counties in the U.S. for helping poor children move up the income ladder.

We rank fifth worst out of ,8 3 counties nationwide. Only four American Indian reservations are below us.

Fortunately, there are proven ways to close the opportunity gap, most notably during the earliest years of life. Brain science has confirmed what most parents already know, namely, that the first five years of life are a time of tremendous physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.

These are the years when brain architecture is being built, with more than one million new neural connections formed every second. But just as seeds must be planted in good soil in order to grow, a child’s environment and life experiences shape and change the architecture of the developing brain, laying the foundation for all the development and behavior that follows, including how healthy and successful the child will become as an adult.

A recent Duke University study authored

by Kenneth A. Dodge, whose team studied more than one million North Carolina public school children, found significant benefits from the state-funded Smart Start and More at Four (NC Pre-K) programs.

These early childhood programs

…continued to have positive effects on the population of targeted students…as they progressed through middle school. Higher levels of program funding improved students’ math and reading scores, decreased the likelihood that they would be placed in special education, and reduced the probability of repeating a grade. The More at Four program effects varied significantly across subgroups within the population, with larger positive impacts on children from less well-educated, more economically disadvantaged, and African American families.

Dr. Dodge will be our keynote speaker at our Raising Every Child benefit luncheon on May 23rd at the Benton Convention Center. We hope you will come help launch our landmark initiative to elevate the well-being of all children in Forsyth County.

The time has come for Forsyth County to take this step on behalf of its youngest children—our future workers, parents, citizens, and leaders.

No, I Won’t Clean Your Room

The

ability to keep a clean house is a skill that is learned, not a skill that one is born with. While it can come more easily to some as opposed to others, nobody comes out of the womb tidying like an expert. Yet there are some parents who spend their children’s lives cleaning up after them, and are then surprised at how they seem to be incapable of keeping up with any chores or cleanliness. In fact, learning how to do chores and keep up with a clean house at a young age is crucial for children developing into responsible adults. Keeping the chores age-appropriate and trying to keep them fun, giving rewards (such as getting to pick a movie on Friday night) for keeping up with weekly chores can be a great way to keep the motivation going. Here are a few ideas of age- appropriate chores that will help train them to be responsible for their own messes, so you can avoid having to clean their rooms as much as possible.

Feeding pets. The act of feeding a pet is very simple and easy, but has huge rewards with feelings of responsibility.

This is a great way for a child to learn responsibility while bolstering his or her self-esteem.

Make their bed. This you will need to help with at the beginning, as with most chores, especially when children’s arms are smaller, so they can learn how to spread the sheets.

Getting into a made bed at the end of the day can make you feel refreshed and calm before bed, so getting into the habit of making their bed every morning is a very helpful skill.

Sweeping the floor. At this age most children have the dexterity to control a full-size broom, but there are childsized brooms as well to start off with, if your child is on the smaller side.

Keeping the fun going, put on some music and dance with them while they sweep around the house.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AGE Vacuuming. When they are big enough to be able to push around the vacuum, this is something that a child can easily own; as a plus, many of them enjoy vacuuming.

TODDLER AGE

Clearing the table. As a part of increasing their knowledge of table manners, have your children ask to be excused from the table and then carry their dishes away from the table and either place them into the sink or load them into the dishwasher.

Laundry. Keep a hamper in each child’s room, and make them responsible for washing, drying and putting away their own laundry. This will greatly help with the “I have nothing to wear” debate, as they will make sure they keep the clothes they like the cleanest. Laundry pods can help greatly with washing clothes, but make sure you supervise your children, as pods are toxic if ingested.

Picking up their own toys. By keeping the amount of toys you own to a minimum and organizing them in boxes, this task is made simpler. Think of how daycares organize their toys; if

Clean Counters. After clearing all plates from the table, have your child wipe it down with a damp rag. It can be helpful to give them a spray bottle for this, to make it more fun.

HANGING ROCK STATE PARK Located in nearby Stokes County, Hanging Rock State Park is the home of the Hanging Rock natural formation. There is a hike that takes you to this formation, but note that there are steep cliffs involved, so it may not be appropriate for those who get nervous easily. The Park is also home to a plethora of hikes that vary in difficulty, many of which are great hikes for children. Upon parking at the visitors’ center, make sure to pick up a map and a Junior Ranger Packet. If you enjoy waterfalls, ask the Ranger on duty to point you in the direction of the five waterfalls the Park offers as hike destinations. You can even get a Waterfall Badge (for only .50) if you complete all five hikes in one day. Next to the visitor center parking lot is a large picnic area that includes grills, as well as water fountains that have bowls for your canine friends. Access to the State Park itself is free.

MARBLES CHILDREN’S MUSEUM Our state’s capital, Raleigh, houses one of the best children’s museums in the state: Marbles Children’s Museum. Within the walls of this museum, there is an abundant amount of creative exhibits for children to challenge themselves with. While there are the traditional handson exhibits, such as dressing up, painting, and a child-sized grocery store, there are also new innovative exhibits. Children can build their own wooden creations using hand-powered drills and real saws. They can play hockey in their socks and slide across the floor or learn about music in the interactive TreeTunes exhibit. With a picnic area just outside of the entrance, you can bring your own lunch or walk to one of the many great restaurants Raleigh has to offer. To put a cherry on top of it all, the admission is only $7 a person!

GREENSBORO SCIENCE CENTER Not only is this a fantastic science center, it also houses a zoo and an aquarium. With the recent expansion, the aquarium now holds new marine animals, such as jellyfish and octopus, in addition to the otters, sharks, and penguins that have been there for an extended time. For a hands-on experience, don’t forget to stop by the touchtank, filled with Sting Rays. In the science center section, you can find a submarine, a dinosaur section, a Komodo dragon, and an interactive play area for all ages. If you continue to the outside, you will find the extensive zoo portion of the Science Center. Here you can see red pandas, gibbons, wolves (including recently born cubs), and tortoises, among others. The petting zoo is also a big hit among all children and adults alike. With admission prices ranging from $13.50-$14.50, this a great mid-range option for a family day.

LAKE NORMAN STATE PARK During the warmer months, Lake Norman State Park is a fantastic place to enjoy a day trip for a swim at their large lakeside swimming beach. While there is a small fee for the swimming beach during peak season, when a lifeguard is present from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day (between $4-5/day), it’s free during the offseason. The beach also has free use of life vests and locker rooms with showers.

Right next to the swimming beach is a picnic area that has grills, so that families can take a break from swimming to bring out the cooler and have a cookout. During the cooler months, there are several hikes throughout the park of varying difficulty, as well as fishing and boating available.

THE PARENTING PARADIGM

As

brand new parents, we’re told about all the potential safety hazards there are in our everyday lives. From cabinet drawers to toilet seats and everything in-between, we’re told to do this and do that to make our environment “child-proof.” This is drilled into our heads and we feel guilty any time something new comes out and we didn’t know about it in advance. Such as, which bug spray to use; will mosquitos give my child malaria?; what foods should they stay away from?; should they get vaccinated?; or, is there a risk of autism?— the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, as confusing as it all can be, almost all of it is credible; at least at the time, we’re supposed to be doing these things. After all, the younger they are, the more protection they need. The older they become, that’s when it gets a little trickier. Parents, who’ve become conditioned to think in a protective manner, find it hard to suddenly switch gears and allow their children to fail, make mistakes, and sometimes fall flat on their face, metaphorically. And yet, this is necessary and just as important in the long run.

Parents are conditioned to be paranoid about their children from the start.

As they grow older, we’re supposed to be tutors for their education, helping them understand subjects where they might be weak. We’re cheerleaders and coaches in their youth sports, along with any other extra-curricular activities. We must make sure they eat healthy and stay in shape, preventing childhood obesity while being careful not to go in the other direction toward Bulimia or Anorexia, which can be worse. Being their healthcare custodians, making sure they take the right medications in the correct dosages, and only when needed.

It’s interesting how the parenting paradigm shifts as the children grow and mature. If you’re not careful, you can get left behind in the protective mode too long and not realize it until they’re too far along to make a difference. No one says it’s easy. Knowing the action your child is taking may lead to problems that they will have to work through and find solutions to can be gut-wrenching for parents. It’s challenging to bite our tongues, withhold our tried and true advice, and simply let them learn at their own pace—and yet, it must be done sometimes.

The bottom line is, we’re responsible for anything and everything that happens to them growing up. Then, when they get a little older, we start to hear a slightly different message. We’re told to make sure we’re not overprotective, or we’ll be labeled a “helicopter parent.” Suddenly, out of the blue, it seems we’re now supposed to tread carefully through the minefield that is parenting. Protect without over-protecting, care for them, but not to the extent you prevent them from experiencing healthy, fun and educational moments in life.

Parenting is not for the weary. It changes and challenges us constantly. It tests our nerves, our stamina, and our very wits about us at times. But in the end, it’s just part of the job. Nevertheless, in spite of the learning curve, going from watching them give you hugs and kisses and never wanting you to say goodbye, to having them move towards more independence and fewer public displays of affection, only to eventually come back around later in life and appreciate all that you did for them—for this, it’s all worth it. Nothing else compares.

husband and I became Disney World fans after taking our daughters there when they were young. We went with some good friends and their children, and although we had a wonderful time, we learned a lot about what we could do to make our next visit even better. Our friend and I were the trip planners and had studied several Disney guides to make the most of our time. We stayed on Disney property, which was key, but failed in other areas of the planning, such as where to eat.

Several years later, we finally got back to Orlando with the same friends and, once again, we renewed our love of “the happiest place on Earth.” It was on this trip that we discovered the Disney Vacation Club. Buying into it was one of the best decisions for our family we ever made. We have now owned it for almost 17 years, adding additional points to accommodate our needs, and have made a family trip every other year since then.

Our family has grown from our original five to now numbering 15. Recently, all 15 of us made the trip, spending some five, six, days at Disney World. Looking back, a few things in our bi-annual family trip have changed. Originally, we would drive to Savannah, eat at our favorite pizza place, spend the night, and drive to Orlando—stopping just inside the Florida line for free orange juice and/or grapefruit juice before continuing on to Disney World. We would blast several appropriate songs, take pictures of the Disney World sign, and cheer when we heard the gate guard say, “Welcome home,” as we got to our hotel. We added a few cars to the entourage as our numbers grew, but not much else changed.

So, why title this article “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles?” Well, as our numbers have increased, so has our means of transportation. Although, in their younger years, our daughters proclaimed they would never come to Disney World, once they had children, until they were old enough not to need a stroller, our eldest daughter was the only one to actually follow through with that claim. In taking babies and toddlers on a trip, a lot of equipment is needed. Our youngest daughter, having a two-and-a-half-year-old and a fivemonth-old, decided the best way to travel was for her

husband and dad to drive down with the two-and-ahalf-year-old, along with all the luggage, pack-and-play, double stroller, and all other necessary items. She and I would fly down with the baby, taking only minimal carry-on bags. Our middle daughter made the decision to take the train, as their three- and six-year-olds adore trains, and this was a perfect opportunity to travel on one. Our eldest carried on the tradition of staying in Savannah, going to our favorite pizza place, and arriving in Orlando the following day.

It has been so much fun watching how, first our daughters, and now their families have embraced this trip and experience with the same joy and excitement as if it were their first time. My husband and I love spending this special time with our grands and seeing their reactions to all the rides, fireworks, shows, and magic that encompass Disney World. Who will ride which ride? Who will muster up the courage to try something new? What will they take away as their favorite from this trip? With there being so many of us, we weren’t able to stay together as a group most days, but we made sure that at least for one meal a day we would all be together. Lots of tales of their days were learned then!

We are a family that loves to travel. I am so happy when I get to experience new places with our grandchildren. No matter how many times I may have been somewhere, when it is the first time for my grandchildren, seeing it through their eyes gives me a feeling as if it were a first for me. With four parks that constitute Disney World, there is something for everyone. I look forward to many more years of this trip and others as well. I find there is a special bond that comes with an insight into my beautiful grandchildren when we travel. No matter how far from home we go, it creates a lovely memory.

The Little Theater of Winston Salem and Black Repertory Company Move Downtown

ORIE Downtown Winston-Salem now has two new additions that will make the Theater District more iconic: The Little Theater of Winston-Salem and the North Carolina Black Repertory Company. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners played a major role in bringing this project to fruition, and there is also a historical element about this event that rings “fascination” and “significance.”

The event opened with a warm welcome from Randy Eaddy, President and CEO of the Arts Council. Eaddy spoke about the vision that the Forsyth County Commission Board had, not only to give the Black Rep Company and the Little Theater a new home that is closer to greater resources, but also to breathe more life and entertainment into the Winston-Salem downtown Theater District. Eaddy believes this addition to the District will have a long-term impact on the Winston-Salem Arts community.

Of course, the ribbon could not have been cut if it hadn’t been for Forsyth County getting involved. The County provided substantial financial support to help the two theater companies share the space in the Arts Council building. The Arts Council Theater was previously located on Coliseum Drive, but was outdated, since it was built back in the 1950s. There was only one rehearsal space for the two theater groups, and the building was gradually getting smaller because of the growing popularity of the companies, so something had to change. A vacant building downtown in the Theater District was filled in after the County voted to purchase the building. Thus, the Arts Council moved from Coliseum Drive to North Spruce Street.

Perhaps this move is symbolic, because there is an illuminating slice of history behind it. David Plyler, Chairman of Commissioners of Forsyth County, dropped some historical gems. Back in the 1960s, this same building on North Spruce Street was used as the entertainment community. It housed numerous radio stations, owned by Gordon Gray, and was once used for the local broadcasting industry. It was also a place where many without television sets in their homes would come and watch their favorite shows. The arts tradition continues with two legendary theater companies now occupying the

place. This building may symbolize the heartbeat of the arts and entertainment community; without it, the creative flow of Winston-Salem would probably cease or dim down significantly.

So, we are thankful that this historic building is still standing, stronger than ever!

But why does moving to the downtown Theater District mean so much to the companies? The leaders of the Little Theater are excited to have extra rehearsal space; the Black Rep Company board is looking forward to having a larger space, more administrative offices; and both companies are mutually happy to have more box offices for guests to order their tickets from.

Another reason that being downtown excites these theater companies is that it is closer to the Marriot Hotel. This is where many out-of-city and out-of-state guests come and stay during the National Black Theater Festival—and they will now likely notice the two theaters! Also, the Arts Council is located a couple of blocks from the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts that houses a new 240-seat black-box theater, and will serve as the main performance venues for both theaters after it is completed this summer.

This open-house event included a tour of the new Arts Council Extension building. It is a spacious, two-level building with a level for each company: the lower level to be enjoyed by the NC Black Rep Company and the upper level to be occupied by the Little Theater. Both levels have a couple of rehearsal spaces, box offices, and administrative offices. The new building even has a kitchen and a conference room!

When asked what their future plans are for both companies, they stated that they would love to keep their essence alive and flowing, not only through the city or state, but throughout the world! Black Repertory Company members specifically expressed that they wanted to have a greater impact and bring in more diversity and community.

So, come on downtown and visit the new Arts Council building!

Seven Lessons Learned from Lion King

BY BRITTANY M. ORIE Lion King still holds the record as one of the most powerful Disney movies ever. Perhaps it is because of the life lessons it teaches us: 1. Overcoming the past. Everyone has a story with a struggle or tragedy or traumatic experience they either had to overcome or have yet to overcome. Lion King may show us what life will look like when we live with past hurt. Although Simba ran away from his past after the sudden death of his father, Mufasa, the past still followed him with a stinger. He couldn’t escape his past and the only way he could heal and thoroughly overcome it was to go back to his homeland, Pride Rock, and confront it.

2. Never forget where you come from. When success comes in like a whirlwind and opportunity and promotion knock at your door, moving up in life causes many to forget what keeps them grounded. For a while, Simba tried to forget his past, but when it came time for him to return home and take his place as king, he remembered the circumstances behind it. No matter how much prosperity we encounter in life, we must remember that our past keeps us humble and our sense of self remains intact.

3. “Even kings get scared.” This is what Simba questioned of Mufasa when he perceived his father as “fearless.” We all have a “king” or “queen” who we believe is never afraid; they seem invincible. Whether this king or queen be our parents, teachers, older siblings, community leaders, or Hollywood role models, they can’t help that they are still human and have insecurities, fears, and apprehensions, just as we do. The greatest role models aren’t those who project nothing but perfection, but those who are transparent and relatable; those who we can identify with.

4. Enemies may be closer than you think.

Not to take a dark turn here, but it is true that some haters can be in your own home or social circle. That was the case with Mufasa and Simba when Scar (Mufasa’s brother, Simba’s uncle) didn’t want Simba to become king. How do we deal with haters who are in such proximity? Be successful!

Smile at them! Pray for them! Show them kindness, regardless of their harshness.

Be unbothered because they feed on your emotional reactions, and they will likely find a new target.

5. Lessons in grieving. Losing someone so close to you feels like a deep puncture. Lion King shows us that it is okay to grieve for those who have transitioned. It also shows us that we can move past it and create a powerful future, not despite our loss, but because of our loss. Towards the end of the film, Simba takes a long, emotionally challenging, yet courageous, walk up Pride Rock to claim his place as the new king. While he makes his way to the top, it is possible that he is reflecting on his past, his father’s death, and all the devastation Scar caused in his homeland. Perhaps Simba took those elements and made them his motivation to serve as a great king. After all, he just couldn’t wait to be king!

6. Don’t let jealousy puppet you. This was evil Scar’s personal problem. He was always envious of Mufasa because he wanted to be in charge. When he found out that Simba would reign as king after Mufasa, he staged a stampede with wild beasts to take them both out. Those who are controlled by jealousy bear no good fruit, and their land remains barren and hostile. This movie reveals that people who are led by jealousy never win in the end.

7. Perpetuate a family legacy.

One of the main purposes of having children is to teach them to carry on a legacy and possibly complete the work that God has started in the preceding generation.

That was Simba’s purpose.

He was to continue and reshape Mufasa’s legacy which was established and perpetuated by all the previous kings who passed on before them. Simba knew he had to start his reign sooner or later and clean up the mess that Scar created.

Teaching Children to Love Art Galleries

unfortunate side effect to parenthood can often be a matter of sidelining our own interests and passions in the name of “kid friendly” activities. When we do this, we dig ourselves into the hole of not expanding our children’s horizons in certain aspects, and end up punishing ourselves in the process. Something we need to remember as parents is that children can handle a lot more than we give them credit for, as long as we set things up in the right way. Art galleries can be a very scary place for parents (especially of small children—anybody else remember that viral video of a kid knocking over a statue worth $132,000?), but there are some simple ways to teach your children to love art galleries and museums right along with you The first thing to do before taking your child to an art gallery or museum, especially if they are younger, is to ensure that any place you go to has subject matter that is age-appropriate. Some parents are comfortable with certain levels of nudity within an artistic context; however, we can all agree that scenes portraying drug use or pornographic materials are not appropriate for anybody under the age of 18. While there is a level of subjectivity as to what is and is not appropriate, most gallery managers will know when kids shouldn’t come to their gallery and will be very honest about that. With the information you get from the gallery, trust your own instincts, and if you are unsure, it may be a good idea to swing by the gallery beforehand, especially for your first trip. With an art museum there is also a visitor’s desk at the front; ask for a map of the museum and for a volunteer to help mark out which sections you may want to avoid and which are “good to go.”

The best intro to taking your kids to art galleries is to bring them during First Friday of every month, which is when the galleries in the arts district stay open late and have events planned. In Winston-Salem, Trade Street is blocked off for First Friday, and there are always activities planned in the street for children, such as chalk painting and photo ops. Each month has a theme which can be scouted out online, so you can plan accordingly, based on your child’s interests. There are also gallery and art non-profit representatives, as well as patrons throughout the street who are happy to answer any questions you have about what galleries are good for kids and where you should start. Most importantly, these are smaller galleries which are much easier to arrange a quick exit from than the State Art Museum. A few times doing this will give you the confidence you need to take them to bigger art museums.

When you are in the gallery, there are several techniques you can use to keep a child’s interest. If you see a landscape or realistic painting, try to make up a story about what is going on in the painting. If it’s a country farm landscape, talk about what the farmer’s family is doing in the background, getting ready for their harvest and fortifying their barn against the trolls in the mountains. Make it as silly as you want to in order to keep their interest, and because it will be fun for you, too. If they like to draw, let them bring a notebook and colored pencils so they can sketch out their interpretation of the art. Or even sketch something that the art has inspired them to create. The most important part is to make it fun and be flexible in how this can be achieved. Make a game to see how many of a certain item you can find in different paintings throughout the gallery or museum. If going through the art gallery or museum and counting how many bare bottoms you see is what your 10-year-old son needs to make this a memorable experience, so be it.

When Kindness

ROCKS

When

Megan Murphy, a life coach from Massachusetts, lost her parents, she struggled with handling the loss. Beginning to paint and write kind messages on rocks, and then leaving them on the beach and in people’s gardens near her home, helped her through this loss and started a movement that has swept the country by storm. For the first year, she created and gifted these “Kindness Rocks” anonymously, but eventually began an Instagram account and social media presence, using the hashtag #thekindnessrocksproject, which helped the idea spread rapidly.

This initial movement has, in turn, spawned many side movements, with most geographic areas having a Facebook group dedicated to the spread of kindness rocks within their communities. Each group has their own little tags they use to mark their rocks, which direct the finders towards the online communities, so that the images and stories can be posted and shared.

Winston-Salem has its very own community on Facebook, titled “Winston-Salem Rocks!” (“W-S Rocks”). With the tag written on the underside of all rocks shared by members being, “Post Pic to [FB] Winston Salem Rocks, Keep or Hide,” there is a plethora of photos shared by people throughout the Winston-Salem community of rocks they have found. Not only can this be a great stress reliever through the physical act of painting the rocks, and a morale booster for the individual to find the rocks; it is a great way to bond with your family and fellow humans. Painting rocks as a family is a unique way to encourage empathy and kindness in children through art.

When asked what type of impact this kindness rock movement and community has had on their lives, the responses from members were overwhelming. One member expressed her deep gratitude for a rock that she still has in her possession. While traveling to and from Wilmington to take care of her brother who was battling lung cancer, she found this rock at her hotel after a long day of shuttling from one appointment to another. She states, “…not the most beautiful rock, probably painted by a child. It made me smile and cry. I still have it and [it] reminds me of my brother when I see it.”

Another member shares an uplifting story about how her son’s day was completely turned around by the discovery of a painted rock. After coming home from a rough day at school, where he was being made fun of by another child, he was feeling extremely low. When she took him to the grocery store he noticed, “lying on the side of a bench, a rock that proclaimed, ‘You are special.’ His sadness went away immediately!” With stories such as these, who wouldn’t want to be part of this movement?

This begs the question: How does one get involved? It’s as easy as grabbing a few rocks and painting them! You can pick up river rocks at most outdoor or hardware stores, or you can even remove them from your own yard. Using acrylic paint, add whatever design and wording you want to the entire rock. While you can buy acrylic paint pens relatively inexpensively at any craft store, a Sharpie works just as well.

Writing inspirational sayings, or even a simple, “You are enough,” on the front of the rock, don’t forget to add the “W-S ROCKS” tag on the back. Also don’t forget to seal the rock to maintain its design in any weather by adding a layer of decoupage glue or acrylic sealing spray. Hide it anywhere in a public space and make some more to hide again. Now that you know about this great movement, you will always be on the lookout for rocks wherever you go!

“God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” ~ 1 John 1:5 This past December, we had a big, early snow around here. Can you remember back that far? Since it wasn’t too cold, everyone wanted to get outside and do all the snow things: make a snowman, go sliding, and have a snowball fight. Did you try to make snow cream? Maybe you helped shovel the sidewalk or driveway.

North Carolina doesn’t always get such a beautiful snowfall. Sometimes the dark days of winter seem to drag on and on. But now it’s March, and this month brings us the first day of Spring. Even so, every season has its “icky” days.

Sometimes we might begin to wonder, “Where’s the sun?” Maybe we even whine a little bit.

“Why is the world so gray? I’m bored!”

Sunshine or not, some days you just feel grumpy.

You might get mad at your family for no reason at all. Maybe you go to your room and pout, but that doesn’t help either.

The Bible says that light is sweet, and it makes us happy to see the sun (Eccl. 11:7). When the sun doesn’t shine, you have to make your own sunshine. What? Only God can make the sun shine! But YOU can make your little corner of the world brighter. How could you do that?

You could play some happy music and dance around the room. Draw or paint a picture. Ask mom or dad if you can help them with something. Now think of at least three other things you can do to put a smile on your face and in your heart. 1.___________________ 2.________________ 3._______________ When you bring God into the picture (even on a gray day), things look better. You remember what’s really important. And you remember that the sun will shine again.

Devotion: Leaning Trees

are quite a few trees on the property where our house sits.

For the most part, we really like them. They provide shade, privacy, and a place for a multitude of birds and critters to live and enjoy.

However, on one side of our home, there are (or, were) three tall, scraggly pine trees that straddled the property line between us and our neighbor.

They weren’t all that lovely.

One day, after a series of storms had ripped through, one of the trees seemed to be leaning towards our neighbors’ home. At first, I thought it was my imagination, so I asked my husband to look at it. He agreed, it was definitely askew. As each day passed, it seemed to get more and more crooked. It became clear, something would have to be done.

Now, strictly according to the law, if that tree had fallen on our neighbor’s house, it would have been their problem, not ours. Their homeowner’s insurance would bear the responsibility of removing the tree and fixing the damage it would most definitely have done. However, that was not an option, as far as we were concerned. The tree was on our property and was threatening to do serious damage to our neighbors’ home, so we called a tree service and had it quickly removed.

The whole ordeal made me think of the emotional, spiritual and psychological “leaning trees” that many of us need to address, because they threaten to harm others. How many of us have allowed our own personal forest full of past hurts, abandonment issues, depression, anxiety, anger management issues, addictions, etc. to hurt the people closest to us? Then, we make excuses for our behavior, or worse, we simply deny there is a problem at all: “My trees are just fine, thank you very much!”

Let Down?

Lift Up!

For

better or worse, we are all fallen human beings. We are likely to mess things up from time to time and let others down in the process. This includes your pastor. So, what should you do if you believe your pastor has fallen short in some way? Here is some wisdom recently shared with us by Rev. Joseph Jennings, who is a pastor and an area superintendent of a large denomination.

“I occasionally hear lay people point out deficiencies in their pastor...let me encourage all of you first and foremost to pray for your pastor! Nothing else will make as much of a difference in your pastor’s development. Talking critically among other church members never helps. Talking directly with your pastor may help if it’s done in humility and love. BUT, talking about it with God will change both you and your pastor more than you can imagine.”

Today, if you are feeling let down by your pastor, #BeTheOne to lift him up in prayer, seeking God’s wisdom and discernment about how best to restore your relationship.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone has at least one or two of these “leaning trees.” Maybe you know exactly which ones belong to you. Maybe you don’t. Either way, it’s essential that you allow God’s Holy Spirit to lead the way in revealing the trees you need to deal with right now. In prayer, ask him to show you clearly which hurts need healing and which relationships need reconciling. Ask Him daily for the strength and wisdom you need as you do the work.

Finally, if you are feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of this task, if you feel like your trees are just too big, too deeply rooted to remove, take heart. This is the stuff of repentance, restoration, and love. This is truly Holy work, and if you’ll let Him, I have no doubt that God will help you with your tree removal project.

Which Filter Are You Using?

In

our selfie-crazed world, oh how we love a good filter.

Filters are no longer limited to graphic artists and professional photographers...our smartphone cameras have a whole host of options.

Not to mention, easy-to-use apps that can touch up and recolor. I have a lot of graphics apps downloaded to my phone, so I can make social media images. Thus, I tend to get bombarded with advertising for other apps on Facebook...

One such advertised app is pretty disturbing. The app’s promotion of a person’s image demonstrates extensive filtering, editing, and reshaping, which boils down to extreme digital plastic surgery. At the end, there’s only a trace resemblance to the original photo.

And with these altered images, the person who uses the app can post these pseudo-realistic photos of themselves for the world to see...and in the process hope that the filters have masked what they want to hide and any imperfections they want to erase.

They’ve filtered out the truth of who they are.

It begs the question—what filters are you using? When we try to walk around filtering our looks, filtering our experiences and relationships as compared to the “perfection” we see on Instagram and Facebook...it’s all an illusion. We feel like we have to filter the realness of who we are and what we believe in order to keep up with the altered standards set by the world. And sure, while my current

headshot has been edited, my talented photographer (Melinda Lamm of “Photo Artistry by Melinda”!) works hard to highlight who I am naturally.

She knows I don’t wear makeup, so she doesn’t try to add it. Her edits boil down to color correction and making sure flyaway hairs are smoothed down. I admit that every now and then, I’ve asked her to edit about 30 lbs. away, but the images she’s done that with—well, I’m never happy with them. Because they aren’t truth. Those 30 lbs. are going to have to come off the old-fashioned way and only then will I be able to see those photos and be pleased.

I’m not wholly against filters when it comes to photography, but the real meat and potatoes of this post are about the filters of life. The filters of who we are as Christians and what we believe.

The Bible, as the authentic Word of God, is truly the only filter we need.

While we’re tempted to filter morals and issues by the world’s standards, the only true filter is to run those standards of who we are, as well as morals and issues, through what God has to say on the subject. And by filtering, I mean true study of the Word and the context.

We can’t just randomly take words and twist them to our purpose. We have to contextually keep God’s word true to what He means, not what we want Him to mean. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is breathed out

by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training

in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Notice that it says, “every good work.”

There is literally no topic that cannot be handled through the filter of God’s word. While some issues may not be directly addressed in Scripture, God can show us answers on any topic through prayer and study. It may make us unpopular. That’s okay. Some may look at us and wonder, “Why does she act like that? It’s weird.” That’s okay, too. The world’s opinion of us as Christians doesn’t matter. The world may judge us as weird, but it’s not their judgment that matters in the end.

And as many have said, and I raise my hand in agreement—“I would rather stand with God and be judged by the world than stand with the world and be judged by God.” And standing in the truth of God’s word requires the filter of His truth. A filter that runs red with the blood of Jesus Christ, but makes every image white as snow. Because His filter of truth brings with it grace, mercy, and wholeness. It brings restoration and makes us new.

And that filter brings out the greatest beauty that we can’t even begin to put into words—but it can also bring anyone to their knees in gratitude. It’s the very filter that will one day bring this verse to reality—“so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11).

Spring Cleaning When

Rev. Dr. Sam Wells was the Dean of Duke Chapel at Duke University, I heard him preach a sermon on the importance of being present and preaching peace. He told the story of his experience as a young priest, working hard to change the culture of Christendom in his community, and simultaneously nurturing his parish into more faithful service to the world. He spent those early days of his career overwhelmed with a lengthy to-do list of his important Kingdom work. His days were busy, and his office was chaos.

Things changed in one moment; he was impatient when a visitor needed the ministry of his presence and needed to feel Christ’s peace.

The visitor cleared a space to sit on the office sofa, moving books and stacks of papers aside. The gentleman then shared his story of heartache and pain to the young priest, but Wells was mentally and emotionally checked-out; daydreaming about how to rearrange his now interrupted schedule. Not having time for this one man. The visitor finally spoke directly to Wells, “Sir, I understand you cannot fix my problems, but the least you could do is listen to me, be present with me in my pain.”

We all learn lessons early in our careers that shape how we approach our vocations and life’s work. Many of us have moments of clarity in service. Moments that startle us into reexamining and reevaluating how we use our time and energy.

This one encounter led to a change in posture—a physical change in the young priest’s presence with visitors.

As a person of prayer and peace, Wells afterwards met with

visitors, seated with folded hands, as if in prayer, and fully attentive. He even went so far as to keep his office space free from clutter or disorder. No dirty dishes or coffee cups. No stacks of paper or boxes in corners. While this took a great effort on his part, he saw as part of his vocation the ministry of presence. Anyone welcomed into this office would find a place of peace, and anyone seeking his pastoral presence would be met with someone in prayer.

Can you imagine changing your very nature as an effervescent, vivacious busybody to being for others a presence of peace?

Can you imagine keeping your office or car clean, not for your own well being or to impress others, but for Christ’s sake, so others may experience peace?

We can never know the many battles the people around us are facing. We can never know the turmoil in their minds or the storms raging inside their homes. But we can offer a ministry of presence, and we can be people of peace.

This Spring, many of us will launch into an annual cleaning spree. If you are one of those Spring-Cleaning Machines or you desire to be, use this as an opportunity to examine your heart.

As you begin to clean out closets or scrub down floors and walls, check in with yourself. Who are you serving by maintaining a space of peace? Who might you welcome into your home that would find a haven from their own busy lives?

Perhaps this is a new way you can share Christ’s message of overcoming the world.

the season of Advent in December, a time of preparation for the birth of Jesus, Christians now prepare for one of the most important spiritual days on the liturgical calendar. Easter may arrive with great excitement of colored eggs, candy, and new clothing; however, the message is found in the symbolism of the cross. A stirring sacrifice allows followers to widen their hearts in search of spiritual clarity.

The Beginning of Lent, Ash Wednesday Time is needed to prepare for the arrival of Easter Sunday.

Counting back 46 days, including Sundays, marks a Wednesday, March 6th, and the first day of this holy season. Typically observed

by Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Presbyterians, and some Baptists, Ash Wednesday is symbolic to prepare the mind for reflection in connection to Jesus’ final days. A shock from color, floral arrangements, and high spirits, observers arriving in a church service will find the altar draped in black cloth and a stillness in the air.

“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” explains the purpose as dust created man and woman in the beginning. Through the sacrifice of Jesus, our dust transcends life to be with Him. Observers discover on this first day of sacrifice, death, and ashes, a meaningful way to encounter salvation. By examining the self, participants find a connection to the grace and mercy of God’s love.

“Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground.

He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.” Genesis 2:7 Observes of Ash Wednesday receive ashes on their forehead in the sign of a cross and the words, “Thou art dust, and to dust thou shall return.” The acknowledgment of the rubbing is an experience of God’s presence in our lives.

A Season of Sacrifice The question, “What are you going to give up or sacrifice?” often arises among Christians during the season of Lent. While the commitment to relinquish a life-changing or difficult habit such as smoking or drinking coffee or a specific type of food or drink has

its appeal, change does not have to be creative. Find something that works for you, and whatever it is, may it help you to turn toward God. The following ideas may assist in finding a solution to commit to a discipline.

1. Relinquishing impersonal relationships through text messaging, and promise to connect in person with friends. Consider scheduling a walk or lunch and discard the idea of being too busy.

2. Surrender to buying any item except the essentials, such as food and medicine. Plan to give away something each day whether it is time for a cause or of monetary value. Giving away could well be defined as eliminating the clutter in your life.

One challenge, found online and adopted by various church groups, offers the suggestion to declutter 40 items or bags from your life during Lent. A printable list, divided into small categories and rooms, is available to simplify the effort.

3. Claim a change from gossip, sarcasm, negative thoughts, and words by writing an affirmation when the mind slips back into old habits.

4. Refocusing your mind in a cleansing manner such as walking away from technology and negativity, avoiding sugar, and building positive and healthy relationships.

5. Openly share your faith, and speak out how the season of lent has impacted your life.

6. Define charity and what it means to you; perhaps, it is helping others through prayer, words or counsel, or deeds. Contact your local food bank, homeless shelter, title one school, inner city church to find out how you can make a difference to others.

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, the arrival of the Lenten season shows us the need to stop, listen, and bring our heart and mind closer to Jesus. Make a promise this year to set aside time to spiritually prepare and understand the love and mercy bestowed to you.

7 Books for Preschoolers That Showcase Strong Women

An

incredibly important part of early childhood development is parents reading stories to their children. An important part of this act is to make sure that your children are mirrored in the stories, which means making sure the characters in the stories look like them. For little girls, this means reading stories that showcase girls and women, and not just princesses who get saved by a knight in shining armor. In order to raise the next generation of women as strong, independent women who can make their own decisions and follow their dreams, it is our duty as parents to ensure they have good role models, not only in real life, but in their fictional realities as well.

Paper Bag Princess, written by Robert N. Munsch, illustrated by Michael Martchenko This timeless tale follows the story of Elizabeth, a princess who is set to marry Prince Ronald. After a dragon destroys her castle (including all of her clothing) and makes off with her fiancé, she dons a paper bag as a dress and embarks on a quest to save her prince. Her cunning and quick wit come in handy during this tale of perseverance and self-actualization.

Lily Brown’s Paintings, written by Angela Johnson, illustrated by E.B. Lewis Lily Brown is a young girl who lives with her mama, daddy, and baby brother and escapes into her paintings. She shows us how to be truly imaginative with our artistic ability, and her imaginative fantasies not only bring readers into a wonderful narrative, it shows them how to harness this imagination themselves.

The Most Magnificent Thing, written and illustrated by Ashley Spires This is the story of a regular girl and her canine best friend who spend a day on the sidewalk in front of their city home trying to invent a “most magnificent thing.” Through her many inventions that aren’t quite right, and her increasing moodiness around the evolution of these inventions, readers are taught about persistence as well as the benefits of taking brain breaks.

Free Range Parenting Is Hard

Something about that particular parenting style resonates in my gut. I believe it’s good for kids to be trained, prepared, and then allowed to navigate the world without adults hovering in the background. I believe in the value of unstructured time in the woods.

I want my kids to have a sense of independence that comes from doing things by themselves.

But as it turns out, I just can’t do the free-range parenting thing.

My kids are 8, 7, and 4. Obviously the four-year-old requires constant supervision at all times, a fact that hurts her dear little heart. But my boys are definitely old enough to do a few things with the neighborhood kids. At least, they should be.

This weekend, I let them head into the woods behind our house with a horde of neighborhood boys. It’s a protected creek bed with neighborhood houses on both sides. The creek is so tiny it barely qualifies as a creek. The neighborhood is safe, if you can really define anything as “safe.” The older boys—three of them 13—are kids I trust. I told my kids to stay within earshot and then defined “earshot,” just in case they didn’t know.

Then I sat on my back porch with

my daughter and listened to all the delighted squeals (and other, lessdelightful noises) that a bunch of boys make in the woods. I even patted myself on the back. This was good— much better than crashing on the couch and watching football.

After a while, I noticed the noise moving farther away, up the creek toward the bamboo forest. The bamboo forest (named by children, clearly) is the only part of the creek that borders on an actual road. My stomach started to twist.

I called for them and quickly realized that they’d left earshot. In fact, I couldn’t hear any of the group anymore. Immediately my mind went to all the scary places. Maybe it’s the stories I heard in the 14 years that I taught school. Maybe I read the news too much. But I couldn’t stop thinking about all the variables that could go wrong. I imagined them separating from the bigger kids. I imagined them getting lost. (My neighbors who know this patch of woods will certainly laugh at that one.) I imagined them deciding to walk home on the busy road.

I remembered every single poor decision they’ve made. (I mean, my oldest filled my car CD player full of pennies and effectively killed it. He was newly 2, but still.) So I put on my boots and headed outside to find

them. Fortunately, one of the big boys made the wise decision to head home and grab waterproof boots, and I was able to intercept him. With a “yes, “ma’am!” and “I can understand why you want them to stay within earshot,” he headed out to wrangle my crew and bring them home.

And a few minutes later, the doorbell rang, and I discovered that my boys had stripped to their underwear on the front porch because they had to cross a creek and apparently that means getting wet up to your knees. Perhaps before I give free-range parenting another go, I should focus on training my children that the neighborhood does not need to know they wear Star Wars underwear. On the upside, they knew better than to track that creek water into my house.

And now they are, in fact, sprawled on the couch, watching football on a beautiful fall day. Their gym shoes are drying in the garage. I’ve stopped patting myself on the back, but my heart isn’t beating out of my rib cage anymore, so I’ll take it.

All that to say, my hat is off to all of you who have mastered the skill of letting your kids run free, however little or much you do it. Free-range parenting is hard. Really hard.

St. Patrick’s Day Treats

We are all wishing for Spring! Usher the season in with these fresh, fun, and easy-tomake sushi-inspired dishes. The dark seaweed turns off some picky eaters, so try these seaweed-free options. Don’t forget to use chopsticks!

CUCUMBER SUSHI ROLL (SEAWEED FREE)

BANANA “SUSHI” ROLLS

INGREDIENTS: 1 can tuna ½ avocado 1 long cucumber 1 squeeze lemon juice 1 Tbsp. mayonnaise 1 cup white rice, cooked

INGREDIENTS: 4 bananas 4 Tbsp. peanut butter 1 cup Nutella 1¼ cup crispy rice cereal (or Fruity Pebbles cereal) 1 cup coconut flakes Sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS:

DIRECTIONS:

1. Wash cucumber and cut in half. Use an apple corer to widely tunnel through the center of each half of the cucumber to remove seeds.

1. Peel two bananas and spread peanut butter onto bananas with spreader.

2. Drain the canned tuna.

3. Roll the second peanut-butter banana in crispy rice cereal.

3. In a bowl, mix the avocado, mayo and lemon juice. Add the tuna and rice, mixing well.

4. Fill the tunnel of the cucumber with the tuna mixture.

5. Slice the filled cucumber into 1-inch thick slices and serve.

2. Roll one of the peanut butter-coated bananas in coconut flakes.

4. Peel the final two bananas and using a spreader, coat in Nutella.

5. Sprinkle one Nutella banana with sesame seeds.

6. Roll the second Nutella banana in coconut flakes.

7. Chill for at least one hour, then slice into 1½-inch slices and serve.

TURKEY & CHEESE “SUSHI” SANDWICH INGREDIENTS: Spinach tortilla wrap 1 tsp. cream cheese ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese 4 slices turkey lunch meat Long red pepper slices (optional) ¼ cup carrots, shredded ¼ cup ranch dressing (optional) DIRECTIONS: 1. Cut off rounded edges of tortilla to make more of a square and spread cream cheese along ½-inch of one edge. (This will act as a “glue” to fasten the sushi sandwich wrap, so keep this in mind when wrapping.)

2. Spread mozzarella on tortilla, leaving the cream cheese and about 2 inches of opposite end uncovered.

3. Arrange turkey slices on the uncovered 2 inches of tortilla. Top with shredded carrots and red pepper (all arranged lengthwise).

4. Roll very tightly towards you—fold over the turkey side first, rolling tightly and squeezing the tortilla, finishing by pressing the rolled sushi sandwich into the cream cheese to “glue” it shut.

5. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into ½-inch pieces and serve with ranch dressing for dipping, if desired.

Turn the Page and Solve Problems

Once

in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary day, a dilemma unexpectedly arrives.

The most extraordinary situations are encountered in the pages of a book. We often imagine leading characters as fictitious two-dimensional people, who endeavor to change their circumstances by initiating a desire to go on an adventure. As readers, seeking unexpected twists and turns in a story, we turn the pages as willing participants.

Words appear to fly off the page, creating vivid visual descriptions of suspenseful to thrilling scenes pertaining to important or minor names. Proceeding, of course, by short periods to catch a breath and exhale, we witness the characters tie their shoelaces, calm unruly locks, and consider the next course of action. This takes a defined period of time, just a page or two.

Great Lines Of the thousands of books read from the first word until the last, the physical appearance and name of a character may not remain in our memory; instead, the traits, great quotable lines, and the noble actions of the fictitious person continue to serve a purpose in our transferring from book to real-life. Phrases such as, “Let it go!” “To infinity and beyond,” and “May the force be with you!” enter into conversations, influencing situations, and, with hope, make a difference. Other lines, such as, “Your identity is your most valuable possession; protect it!” or, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great more to stand up to your friends,” carry beyond the page and can be used to

affirm personal courage. Even though the character may be an ice-princess, astronaut, Jedi Master, superhero, or headmaster with magical powers, the power of statements, even the ones that promote laughter, often have a greater purpose.

What is Fluent Thinking?

Sometimes, real life and the novel blend seamlessly together; so well, in fact, that fictitious characters often feel like friends.

Positive influences can aid readers to become fluent thinkers by openly discussing their problems and viewing possibilities in new ways. Just as the process of problem-solving takes place not only in a thirty-minute increment, activities such as brainstorming with a friend, or just out loud, and reflection are part of the ongoing solution. It can be exciting to recall scenes from your own story, learn from those experiences, and quite possibly think creatively through problems to change familiar outcomes.

Constructive Dialogues The concept of “problem and solution” begins with a reader’s need for the main character to escape danger and arrive safely at his or her destination. The journey is not easy. Some characters despair and feel the futility of hope. A solution often arrives in the form of a stranger. An exchange between the two characters occurs to demonstrate a process of thinking or planning, and show the passage of time. The realistic characters, who may indeed respond in frustration or tears, rarely storm off the page. They remain in the spotlight to solve the problem. Remember, every

book comprises the same elements.

One solution will not suit every situation involving love, friendship, bullying, despair, or anger. Plans will fail. Dialogue will continue. And, similar to real-world problems, the adventure also continues with the arrival of a sequel, a series, a compilation, or even a decalogy. The reader often picks up the new book just to see how additional problems are presented and solved.

Solving Universal Problems Picking up a book and delving into the pages can solve universal problems, from mending a broken heart to feeling happier, teaching valuable lessons, or improving memory-boosting inspiration.

Reading a few minutes every day has been proven to reduce stress levels by 70%. Sometimes, when problems arise, following a character into another world or time traveling to the past can aid in the process of pausing to reflect, analyzing the character’s plan, or just trying to find out how a story ended.

We are main characters in our life story. Right in the middle of an ordinary day, we discover untimely adventure, obstacles, and layers of complication.

The supportive role of our friends often personifies the very attributes of our favorite fictitious characters, who become the ideal depiction of the book-worm, the rule-breaker, the comic, and even the wise sage. Rarely does a great story include just one character. Even you can problem-solve your way over the towering wall and through sticky webs to find a better place. As a fairy godmother once said, “Even miracles take a little time.”

Parents’ gift

of a palliative care room will help other families

Although she lived just 57 days, Evelyn Kennedy Cochran left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

“Long before she was out of the womb (at 37 weeks), the palliative care team stepped in and helped us learn how we could parent this very special child,” Nicki said. “They had so much wisdom and endless grace to offer.”

“She was so precious,” said Patty Vandergrift, a neonatal nurse practitioner and Care Always neonatal and perinatal palliative care coordinator at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. “She loved being held. It was as if she was saying, ‘I’m part of this world. I am awesome and wonderfully made.’”

The kind of neonatal palliative care support Forsyth Medical offers doesn’t exist everywhere. “We moved here by chance for Kent’s job,” Nicki said. “And then we find out we need the services provided by this incredible team. Not every family has access to this level of care.”

Evelyn’s parents, Nicki and Kent Cochran, found out when they were 20 weeks pregnant that something was wrong. Three weeks later, they learned their baby had a rare and life-threatening condition called Trisomy 18, a genetic disorder that includes a combination of birth defects that impact nearly every organ in the body.

Neonatal nurse practitioner Vandergrift explains: “We wanted to offer familycentered care for this treacherous walk. The baby has physical needs, of course, but the family has psychological and spiritual needs. We want to take care of whole families – to work with them on their goals and wishes for their baby.”

Planning a birthday party Patty Vandergrift worked closely with a multidisciplinary care team that included medical specialists, counselors, the chaplaincy and many others. “Those were the craziest months of our lives,” Nicki said. “Patty and her team helped us accept who our daughter was and learn to love her because of her disability and not in spite of it.”

Kent was in the third year of his anesthesiology residency at Wake Forest University. He knew what the diagnosis meant. “Babies with Trisomy 18 often can’t sustain the trauma of childbirth,” he said.

“We needed to decide how we were going to spend whatever time we had with Evelyn.”

“Parenting Evelyn was going to be different from parenting our other children,” Nicki added. “When you get this news, your first thought is: How can you best love this child? But then your next thought is of your other children.” Again, Vandergrift had suggestions. She helped make Evelyn’s birth special for older brother Caleb, now 5, and sister Caroline, now 3. To celebrate Evelyn’s life, the team planned a birthday party for her.

‘Endless grace to offer’ The Cochrans and their team at Forsyth made a birthing plan. Every expectant parent has one – but the Cochrans needed contingency plans. In the event Evelyn lived for only minutes, they arranged for a photographer to be in the delivery room to capture those moments.

The Cochrans were prepared for Evelyn’s life to last minutes or hours. When they learned they could take her home – she was just 2 pounds, 6 ounces – they were thrilled.

And scared. They hadn’t considered the possibility.

While Evelyn was under hospice care, her parents were in charge of all the things that accompany parenting a newborn – diaper changing, late-night bottle feedings and comforting her when she woke up crying.

All of it was a joy. The Cochrans took none of it for granted.

For nearly two months, they tried to live an ordinary life as a family of five. Yet there was so much they wanted Evelyn to experience. Simple things like feeling the warmth of

the sun, dipping her toes in a pool. And extraordinary things, such as visiting one of America’s greatest treasures. The family made it to Yellowstone National Park, home of Old Faithful.

Evelyn died a short time later surrounded by her family.

“Fourteen days is the average lifespan of a child with Trisomy 18,” Kent said. “We feel lucky we had Evelyn for 57 days. We were given a miracle that was wild and undeserved.”

During a time filled with shocks and aftershocks, The Cochrans were in for another one. And it’s one they feel compelled to share. “We have a strong faith,” Nicki said. “And we thought our faith would make this easier. It was a surprise to find out it didn’t. Faith has given us purpose and hope, but it hasn’t lessened our pain.”

The legacy of Evelyn Evelyn lives on inside Forsyth Medical Center’s Room 3130. It’s been transformed, thanks to the Cochran’s generosity, into a special family room for parents who have just weeks, days or hours to spend with their babies.

Southern Charm

The family bereavement/infant palliative care room, known as “The Wildflower Room” – includes a full-size bed – “so the whole family can snuggle,” Nicki said. It also has a reclining chair; rocking chairs and a little art easel for siblings; comfy linens, quilts, throw pillows and blankets; a sound machine; artwork and Bluetooth CD player.

Ann Smith, director of Women’s and Children’s Health at the Maya Angelou Women’s Health & Wellness Center at Forsyth Medical Center, is humbled by the gift. “We’d done the best we could for families like the Cochrans using a regular hospital room,” she said. “We tried to help those families make memories. But there’s no comparison in what we had before and what we have now. The Cochrans created a peaceful, soothing, private space.”

“We can’t take away anyone’s pain,” Nicki said. “But in the midst of the pain, we want those parents to feel loved. We want other families to find an oasis in this room.”

Keeping Evelyn’s memory alive is a way to keep her close. The Wildflower Room is a way of saying, “Evelyn was here. Her life mattered,” Nicki said.

“Evelyn was the most unbelievable person I’ve ever known,” said Kent. “My work as a physician will be forever changed because I’m Evelyn’s father.”

The Cochrans don’t think of the Wildflower Room as their gift to the hospital. “This is a gift to us,” Kent said.

Five Benefits of Crossword Puzzles

Crossword puzzles have been around far longer than you may realize. The concept was invented by a journalist in Liverpool and first published in the Sunday edition of the New York World on December 21st, 1913. Within the first decade of publication, crossword puzzles were in most US newspapers. Crossword puzzles are now considered the most popular, well-known word game in the world.

Why is working a crossword puzzle beneficial to most people? Glad you asked!

MOOD ENHANCEMENT: Like many other hobbies, working on a crossword puzzle can improve a person’s mood. The successful completion of a puzzle or just working toward a goal produces dopamine, which relates to happiness and a pleasant feeling.

That feeling of accomplishment is unique and something that can carry a person throughout the day.

MENTAL STIMULATION: Exercising the mind is good for anyone at any age. For the younger-aged, the mental stimulation stretches their thinking and reasoning skills. Challenging

the mind with age-appropriate puzzles helps with the ability to concentrate, think through problems, and practice focus skills that will serve young people well as they mature. For older adults, keeping the mind active can help reduce memory issues and assist in keeping the brain busy. The same abilities that young people enjoy help older adults, too. Activities that require concentration and focus are excellent mental exercises that keep one alert and focused.

STRESS REDUCER: You might think that working a crossword puzzle might be stress-inducing; however, it’s just the opposite, according to studies. Getting lost in a puzzle takes one away from the daily stress of work or retirement (yes, there are stress factors in retirement), and allows a person to take a mental break from all that.

Those mental breaks are good for you, much like getting lost in the pages of a book. It’s a refreshing, invigorating feeling, once you’re done and come back to the present. Think of it as a small mini vacation.

ENHANCED VERBAL SKILLS: As you gain the confidence to work more difficult crossword puzzles,

you will likely find that your vocabulary has improved. Studies have proven that this is the case.

Learning is learning, and when it’s tied to a game, well, that’s even better. Searching for a word may require checking a dictionary or a thesaurus. Once you learn a new word, you find yourself using it in conversation.

SOCIAL SKILLS: Working crossword puzzles often leads to asking for help in finding the right word; hence, the social skills.

Working puzzles doesn’t have to be a solitary activity; groups can work on them much as any other board game or card game.

The New York Times is known for its crossword puzzles. As the week progresses, the puzzles get progressively more difficult, with Saturday being the most challenging. The crossword puzzle in the New York Times Magazine is equally challenging and even more complex. Books of puzzles and online games are also available, but the newspaper versions may be the ones to present the most challenges. Are you brave enough to take one of these on? And, complete it using an ink pen?

– Your Time, Your Health, Your Way

things are better than fresh, homecooked meals using real ingredients that are full of natural flavor. With so much going on in our busy lives, having meals like this every night of the week is virtually impossible. Inevitably, we will cave to the ease of fast food, takeout and frozen dinners that are full of preservatives and artificial colors and flavors. Inkem and Pam Baker are hoping to change this and are making that hope a reality for many in our area with their meal service known as “Healthy Made Simple.”

“The business really came about as a result of support meetings that I had set up with a group of clients who had joined Weight Watchers,” said Pam. “They were not achieving their goals with exercise alone, and I wanted to help them get control of their nutrition. One of the women joked that it would be so much easier if someone would just make the food for them, and the rest was history. I really enjoy my role as a personal trainer and have a passion for helping others.

Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand. Health and wellness can only be achieved with a good balance of both, and Healthy Made Simple gives our customers the tools to achieve their goals.”

Healthy Made Simple grew when Pam met and married Inkem. “I was able to go much broader with my services with his support and belief in my mission,” said Pam. “He has been my rock and the catalyst to where we are today!”

Inkem also brings immense knowledge of business and personal fitness to the endeavor. “My father and grandfather were entrepreneurs, and I grew up watching them run a small business,” said Inkem.

“I’ve worked as a public school educator for 30 years, and I’ve always wondered if I could run a business. When Pam and I met, she told me about her home business, and I thought it was a great idea that could help people. As a former physical and health educator, I’m really interested in helping people solve health problems, and I’m very aware that many are a result of poor diets and bad eating habits.”

So, how does Healthy Made Simple work? Well, it’s simple! “Our new weekly menu is posted every Sunday, and we accept orders until Thursday at midnight,” said Pam. “Customers go to our website and select the food they want for the week, or sign up for a meal plan, then we prepare it on Sunday and deliver it to them on Monday every week. The customers can also pick up their orders on Monday from 5-7pm at our kitchen in Advance.”

And, the food speaks for itself. “They are low-calorie but don’t sacrifice taste,” said Pam. “They are properly portioned, so you don’t eat too much in one serving. Many are gluten free and all are made with the freshest ingredients and are scratch-made each week. When you consider the time it takes to

shop, plan, prep, store and cook the meals, plus the cost of the food, the price is incredible. When you buy ingredients, they come in all sizes and amounts.

These have to be stored and, when they get out of date, thrown away. With our meals, everything is in the dish or container-prepared and ready to heat and eat.

Customers let us know that they suddenly don’t need as much refrigerator or cabinet space to stock up. We do our best to help people create successful eating habits that keep them healthy, lean and out of the doctor’s office.”

It is hard to pick favorites, but Pam certainly has some that she loves! “I love the international dishes, and we make a variety of these every week,” said Pam. “We also have lighter-fare offerings like soups and salads, as well as many healthy versions of mainstay comfort foods.

I have many favorites, but I would say several are the Mediterranean Lasagna, the Hearty Beef & Barley Bowl, French Onion Soup, Pork Ragu with Polenta, Chicken Tikka Masala, Crab Cakes with Spicy Remoulade Sauce, Korean Brisket Tacos and the French Toast with Sautéed Pears and Cranberries. Honestly, there are just too many to list! We like to offer variety to keep our customers from getting bored.”

INGREDIENTS: CRUST: 1 cup of pecans ½ cup flour ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature FIRST LAYER: 4 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature ½ cup powdered sugar SECOND LAYER: 2 /3 cup granulated sugar 1 /3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 /3 cup cornstarch ¼ teaspoon sea salt 2½ cups half-and-half 4 large egg yolks ¼ teaspoon vanilla 1 Tablespoon butter TOPPING: 1 cup heavy cream 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 1 ounce baking chocolate

Chocolate Cream Tart with Pecan Shortbread Crust

While most have to be made day-of, let’s be honest—when entertaining, although desserts are often the easiest item to get done the day before, I think this recipe tastes even better the next day! The rich chocolate pudding filling pairs perfectly with the pecan shortbread crust, so that the tart isn’t too dry—and don’t get me started on the homemade whipped cream! This dessert is perfect for parties and entertaining—it is a showstopper. Get into the kitchen and see for yourself!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Begin by chopping pecans by hand or with a food processor. In a mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment, combine chopped pecans, flour and butter.

Spray a tart or pie dish with non-stick cooking spray and press dough into the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes and set aside to cool.

3. For the first layer of filling, whip together cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth. Using an offset or rubber spatula, spread onto the bottom of the cooled crust.

4. For the second layer of filling, combine sugar, cocoa, cornstarch and salt in a saucepan. Whisk in milk, cook over medium-high, stirring constantly.

Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until it is bubbly and thick. In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks together. Add a small amount of chocolate mixture to the eggs and stir. Stirring constantly, continue to add small amounts of the chocolate mixture and the egg yolks until they are completely combined. Return to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until mixture begins to boil. Stir in vanilla and butter and mix until smooth. Pour filling over cream cheese layer and let chill in the refrigerator.

5. Make the whipped topping just before serving. Beat together cream and sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread on top of the chocolate layer. With a vegetable peeler or microplane, make shavings of chocolate with baking chocolate to garnish.
