you, Punxsutawney Phil, for six more weeks of winter weather. I guess it’s just as well, with Winter Olympics dominating our televisions in February. Makes you want to run off to the nearest ski resort or ice rink and strap on a pair of skis or skates! I love the inspiring stories of hard work and passion behind each athlete and seeing the pride of the families and countries behind them. I love how it brings the world together, even if for just two weeks.

Enjoy and Your Children More With “Positive Discipline”

Every

parent knows that parenting is challenging and that children don’t come with operating manuals.

There is more information available about how to parent than ever before, and it can be overwhelming. Let me suggest one simple and commonsensical approach for consideration, “Positive Discipline.”

Positive discipline was introduced in 1981 by Jane Nelson in the first edition of her book, Positive Discipline. Since then, this approach to parenting has grown in popularity, as more and more parents have come to see the benefits for their children and their families.

Positive Discipline is relevant from infancy through adolescence and emphasizes teaching the behaviors we want rather than punishing for those we don’t. It is based on mutual respect between parents and children, and is designed to teach young people necessary social and life skills to become responsible, respectful and contributing members of their families and communities.

While practical and straightforward, this approach does require a few paradigm shifts. The first is shifting our thinking from guilting, shaming, timeouts and punishing, to teaching and encouraging our children.

The first four methods may work in the short term, yet they cannot produce sustainable long-term changes in a child’s ability to self-correct and develop selfdiscipline, the prized goals. Jane Nelson herself says it best. “Where did we get the crazy idea that to make children do better, we first have to make them feel worse?”

Instead of scolding a child for running in the house, we might tell him that running inside is dangerous and show him where running can happen safely, maybe the backyard. To encourage this new behavior, we might go outside and have a little fun running with him. Then, each time he runs inside, we can remind him where running should take place, thus teaching and encouraging him as he learns this new behavior.

The second important paradigm shift for parents is that it is not about changing my child’s behavior; it’s about changing mine.

In my more than ten years as a positive discipline coach, parents report that even the smallest changes in their own behavior yield immediate positive responses from their children. When your child battles you in the morning about putting on her shoes, you can decide how you will change your response. Instead of pinning her down and putting on her shoes, you could choose to leave the house with her shoes in hand. “It’s time to go so we’ll have to carry your shoes and put them on later.”

The next paradigm shift is that misbehaving children are not are being bad, they are discouraged and trying to communicate something.

“I am angry.” “I am scared.”

“I want you to notice me.”

“I want to help, too.” The goal is to understand this encrypted message. We, as leaders of our families, move from seeking to be understood by, to seeking to understand, our children. The next time you have the urge to say, “Do you understand me!” try asking, “What do you need right now?”

It’s amazing how much children can tell us about what they need if we give them a chance.

A few other Positive Discipline tips for your parent toolbox include: • Take a vow of YELLibacy. Try substituting yelling with another behavior. When you find yourself wanting to yell, then sing, dance, or say a funny tongue-twister.

This new, unexpected response may help you get a different response from your child.

• Connect before you correct. This means redirecting your child’s behavior using

a kind and firm approach at the same time. Kindness (connecting) reinforces your child’s sense of security, while firmness (correcting) sets a necessary limit or boundary. For example, “I care about your safety. You must hold my hand when we cross the street.”

• Get on the same page. It is essential that both parents be on the same page and represent a united front in their family. Also, consistency is a must. When setting a boundary or limit, make sure you can follow through every time.

Empty Bowls 5K Crit Run

Ray Boden is wearing bright green running shoes. Like, really, really bright.

He is walking through Second Harvest Food Bank, talking a mile a minute about the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic, and he has notebooks stuffed with papers under his arm.

From Ray (he is the Director of the WSCC and Producer of Gears & Guitars) we learn that this multi-day event that spans Memorial Day weekend is quickly coming together; bands are being booked for Gears and Guitars, routes are being planned for the Gran Fondo, logistics are being worked out for the main stage on 4th street, and permits are being secured for the route of the Criterium.

Ray stops. He takes a deep breath, pauses, and says: “It is going to be really, really great.”

Entering its sixth year, the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic has already established itself as one of the country’s most prestigious professional cycling events. Thousands of spectators from all over the country—all over the world—flock to Winston for this event, putting our small, Southern city and its surrounding countryside on the map for cycling enthusiasts.

“Some outside people say, ‘Why don’t you bring your event here?’” says Boden, speaking of larger cities. “But why would we?

We are from here. And we can do it.”

It’s no small point of pride to Boden and the other event organizers that they are all Winston-Salem locals. Dr. Richard Rauck, Michael Hosey, Sterling Swaim, Lisa Lineback, and others connected to the Criterium or Crit (a bike race on a closed loop circuit) and the development of the National Cycling Center in downtown Winston-Salem each are deeply rooted in the city, personally and professionally. “It’s very homegrown, and why shouldn’t it be?” say Boden.

This is why it made perfect sense for the Cycling Classic to team up with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina to introduce another event to the weekend: the Empty Bowls 5K Crit Run. Second Harvest is also a very homegrown organization, established 35 years ago to reduce food waste and move food away from landfills and into the kitchens of foodinsecure Northwest North Carolinians. Like the Classic, Second Harvest has seized on the idea that everything we need is right here: food bankers collect food from local farmers, distributors, and retailers; as well as from food drives; and get it to the families that need it the most.

The idea is that here there is plenty, we just have to tap into it.

“The spirit of Second Harvest really matches the spirit of the Cycling Class and Criterium,” says Carolyn Breese, Director of Development and Community Relations at Second Harvest. “The

food bank moves and redistributes 37 tons of food every day.

Our employees and volunteers do this work because they love Winston-Salem—and they love Northwest North Carolina.”

The Empty Bowls 5K Crit Run will be a fundraiser for Second Harvest Food Bank, with the proceeds going to help purchase food and support other Second Harvest programs, such as cooking and nutrition classes, FNS outreach, and culinary job training classes for local people who struggle with food security.

This run joins a growing number of road races and other athletic events that benefit the food bank, helping to make the connection that hunger is a health issue, just like exercise and physical activity. “We know that heart disease, obesity, and diabetes are more prevalent in communities with low food security, and fundraisers like the Empty Bowls 5K Crit Run help Second Harvest and our partner network focus on bringing the healthiest food and nutrition programs to those who need it the most,” says Breese.

“The bigger we get, the more we want to hold on to the threads of this community,” says Boden of the Empty Bowls 5K Crit Run, which will give families a meaningful way to get involved in the weekend’s events. After all, it is the aspiration of the National Cycling Center to become not only an Olympic training center, but also a nonprofit deeply rooted in promoting community health by providing bike shares, physical education, and wellness programs. Similarly, Second Harvest sees its organizational future as one investing in the health of people and communities, by ensuring healthy food access as a foundation for greater community health.

“And it’s all local. All of it,” says Boden.

Walk in the Park and Family Jamboree: A Day Dedicated to Bringing Awareness to Those with Autism and Developmental Disabilities

EVERYBODY enjoys a good walk in the park and Horizons Residential Care Center is asking folks to meet them at the park in April. There, on April 14th, we will walk in unified celebration and awareness of the area’s thousands of families living with autism and developmental disabilities.

Horizons will present “A Walk in the Park and Family Jamboree” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A coordinated casual walk through Horizons Park will be held beginning at 9 a.m. As they finish, walkers will continue the celebration just across the street on Horizons’ scenic and spacious campus.

The Family Jamboree will include kids’ activities, music, craft vendors, an antique car show, community resource booths, food and much more!

The goal of A Walk in the Park is to shine a bright light on the area’s families that live with Autism and/or developmental disabilities. State health statistics estimate that at least 6,000 households in the Forsyth County area are touched by either autism or developmental disabilities.

Yet, despite the large and increasing numbers, awareness of these conditions is not keeping pace with the growing instances.

“We know that there are so many families who every day live with the effects of autism, and families who have loved ones with disabilities.

Every day they get up and push on in spite of the challenges they face,” says Richard Anderson, Horizons CEO. “We want to celebrate these families by joining them in a simple, yet festive, Walk in the Park. This simple walk will bring together families in similar situations and connect them with community resources. This day, by design, will be a day for them just to enjoy with others, make new friends and make new connections.”

The day-to-day circumstances of those living with developmental disabilities are well known to the organizers at Horizons.

For more than 40 years, the agency has provided a home for children and adults living with developmental disabilities.

While the majority of individuals come to Horizons from Forsyth and neighboring counties, some come from other areas of North Carolina or from neighboring states.

Many of those that live at Horizons have also experienced some level of brain trauma, which has compromised their mobility and immune systems. Residents of Horizons live either at the primary location off of Germanton Road or at the Arches site on Bethabara Park Boulevard. Horizons staff decided to present A Walk in the Park because they know first-hand how much comfort and strength comes from knowing you are not in any situation alone.

“We provide hope. And we want to spread that hope.

Well, the best way to do that is to let people know you are here for them,” Anderson says. “Horizons is here for families facing these challenges, and on April 14th we want everyone to come and take a walk with us. That’s where understanding and awareness begin. Just folks walking and talking together.”

Horizons is hopeful that those who want to show support and learn more will attend, in addition to those families living with disabilities. Walkers of all types are encouraged to come out and literally take a walk in someone else’s shoes and help celebrate what is discovered.

And, organizers say, don’t let the term “walk” deter you.

Participants are signed on to come in wheelchairs, strollers, carriages and more. All ages and “walking” abilities are welcomed. There will be booths offering information on available community resources. There will be recognition for the largest groups participating, for those with the most family members and for the best outfits/T-shirts.

OUT & ABOUT in Winston-Salem with Coterie Club BY HEATHER SPIVEY

Saturday February 3rd the Coterie Club celebrated their 68th anniversary hosting a ball at the Benton Convention Center. The Coterie is one of Winston-Salem’s oldest women’s organization that raises money for Brenner Children’s Hospital and the Battered Women’s Shelters in both Winston-Salem and Kernersville. Coterie means, a small circle of friends with common interests.

In 1949, twelve professional women (primarily employees of Security Life and Trust, later Integon and then GMAC) formed the Coterie Club. The first dance was held on Christmas night 1950 at the old Robert E. Lee hotel in downtown Winston-Salem.

Today, the local Coterie Club has ten members who invite 500 guests to the dance.

The club raises money through its annual dues, selling pecans and providing lunch for the Kernersville Lions Club. Current members of the club are Kay Bare, Judy Hardy, Margo Jarrett, Jeanie Martin, Debbie Maurrer, Edna Palmer, Darlene Reinhardt, Debbie Schaefer, Karen Young, and the group’s president, Terri Tyler. The group danced to the music performed by the Phatt City Band.

The theme for this year’s event was “Join Us on the Red Carpet to Celebrate the Legends of Old Hollywood”. Eye catching centerpieces were created from red roses with twinkling lights featuring photos of Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, and more. Members and guests enjoyed a keepsake with their picture taken on the red carpet as well.

President Terri Tyler opened the dance by welcoming guests and thanking the many charity-minded individuals and businesses who supported the club by making donations of merchandise for the silent auction. “We are so very proud of our club.

In addition to the monetary contributions our members make throughout the year, each member contributes lots of their time. They all have such big hearts. But the best thing about our club is its singularity of purpose... to help the women and children of Forsyth County in need,” One of the club’s many activities is donating two beautifully decorated Christmas trees to Brenner Children’s Hospital to add a little cheer for the children.

Safe Sober Prom Night The decision of a lifetime!

While

prom season is filled with excitement, fashion, and maybe a hint of glamour as you dress for one of the most memorable times of your life, the event also inspires conversations that aren’t always easy to begin.

Balancing that focus on fun while also being responsible and honest is what continues to make the Safe Sober Prom Night campaign so popular.

For local high school students, Safe Sober Prom Night is a favorite part of spring. As the program heads into its 28th year, title sponsor Daggett Shuler, Attorneys at Law, and co-founder, David Daggett couldn’t be more proud of the fact Safe Sober Prom Night is the longest-running, privately funded initiative of its kind in the United States. A tradition in the Triad since 1991, Safe Sober Prom Night now visits 48 high schools in 10 counties every spring, in a little over six weeks. Schools targeted include all high schools in Forsyth County, as well as Stokes, Yadkin, Wilkes, Surry, Guilford, Alamance, Davie, Davidson, and Randolph counties. More than 500,000 students have already taken the group’s pledge to keep prom night alcohol- and drug free.

“We take great pride that our entire team continues to support the mission of Safe Sober Prom Night after all these years,” explains David Daggett. “Safe Sober Prom Night continues to encourage an environment of positive peer pressure that is contagious, and helps ensure and enhance the future of our communities.”

Pledge Day, the most well-known aspect of Safe Sober Prom Night, has even become part of many schools’ Spirit Week leading up to prom. The program visits each school one day during lunch, where juniors and seniors are invited to sign a pledge promising to be safe and sober on prom night. When they sign a pledge, they also receive a free T-shirt proclaiming their promise to their friends, family, and community. Other elements of the campaign include the T-shirt Design Contest—where each fall, students at the 48 high schools are invited to submit original designs, with the winner receiving a $500 scholarship and the student’s teacher/classroom a $500 grant. Each year, school assemblies feature a nationally renowned speaker, who joins a rotating schedule of 10 of the participating high schools for a session of inspiration and encouragement. This past fall, Jeremy Bates (known as the Hope Dealer) was the featured speaker and received thundering approval from students and school faculty.

Statistically, the time between prom and graduation can be the most fragile and potentially dangerous time of a young person’s life, and the mission of Safe Sober Prom Night has always been to become an avenue that connects with students in a positive way.

Bringing a few key points to the conversation can make all the difference: • Be prepared to deal with pressures. Saying “No” and walking away won’t always be easy, but having a game plan of what you’re going to say can help.

• Plan something unique and fun, and stick to your plan! Make the prom so upbeat that no one will want to leave to drink or do drugs. It’s all about the memories, so make sure yours are happy and comfortable for all your friends.

• Be a leader. Peer pressure can just as easily work positively, and if you’re having so much fun staying sober, others will take notice.

“Being in every single one of our schools every single year for more than 25 years has convinced me that our students are the best and brightest,” maintains Daggett. “What they need from us—all of us—is leadership, guidance, and direction.”

For example, some high schoolers will be pampered with getting their hair and makeup done and will be treated like celebrities as their families and friends snap pictures. However, before everyone heads off to dance the night away, they need to eat dinner, a memorable dinner, and we have the perfect place for you – Jeffrey Adams on Fourth.

“Jeffrey Adams on Fourth is a great, trendy place,” said Andrews. “Our menu fits everyone’s palate and isn’t expensive.

We like to call it ‘great dining at affordable prices.’”

The restaurant offers a wide variety of sandwiches, soups and salads, seafood, beef and pasta dishes for lunch or dinner.

There are also vegetarian options. A majority of the items are prepared with fresh, locally grown products from his family farm, Andrews Farm, in King.

“Some of my favorite dishes are the seafood risotto, the fourounce steak fillet and the crab cake sandwich. As for dessert, I’m a straight-up chocolate lover. You can never go wrong with our brownie and salted caramel ice cream. It is so good. Also, another top dessert for me is our cheesecake,” Andrews stated.

The seafood risotto consists of scallops, lobster and shrimp mixed with smoked Gouda cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and spinach. The crab cake sandwich includes crab, remoulade, lettuce and tomato on a Kaiser roll. Both sound absolutely delicious and are perfect for prom goers.

7 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Prom Corsages and Boutonnieres

have the perfect dress. You have the glamorous hairstyle and makeup. Now, all you need are the corsages and boutonnieres. A corsage is a small flower bouquet that is commonly given by a girl’s date. As for boutonnieres, these are a single flower or bud worn by men.

The history of these designs dates back to Ancient Greece, when they were worn to ward off evil spirits. Now, they are necessities for prom. Corsages and boutonnieres started when men picked up their dates and gave them a bouquet of flowers. Then, they took a bud and pinned it to her dress. Before heading to your neighborhood florist for prom corsages and boutonnieres, here are the seven things you need to know:

1. Know the 2018 prom flower trends. According to Allison Dahl, owner of Dahlia’s Floral Design & Vintage Décor in Clemmons, the more sparkle and glitz, the better when it comes to prom corsages and boutonnieres. “It is a special day, so why not go big?”

2. Be prepared when shopping. Corsages and boutonnieres come in multiple styles and varieties. There is really something for everyone, but you should remember that your flowers should always enhance you and your dates’ outfits. At Dahlia’s Floral Design & Vintage Décor, prom goers can get customized corsages and boutonnieres. Dahl recommends always bringing in pictures of the lady’s dress when picking out the colors of your flowers.

3. Who pays for what. Traditionally, the male will pay for the corsage and the female will pay for his boutonniere. However, when it comes to picking out the arrangements, most of the time it is left up to the girls and/or moms. “We have lots of moms come in and choose the corsages and boutonnieres at our shop,” said Dahl. This helps to make sure both flower designs match the couple’s prom attire.

4. Prices for every budget. Corsages and boutonnieres don’t have to be expensive to look nice. The rule of thumb is that corsages are 10% of the cost of the dress. However, this doesn’t have to apply to you and your date. Talk with your florist and let them know your budget. They will make sure your night to remember will be complete with the perfect corsage and boutonniere.

5. Where do I wear it? Corsages are typically worn on a lady’s wrist, but the key as to where to wear your corsage is what looks best with your dress. For example, it can be worn on the bodice of your dress close to your shoulder. Also, they can be pinned to your hair. Lastly, corsages can be attached to your clutch or purse. As for boutonnieres, there is only one way to wear it, guys. This single bud is placed on the man’s jacket’s left lapel right above the heart. The flower’s stem is facing down.

6. Order early. Dahl stresses ordering your corsages and boutonnieres as early as possible.

“The dates for the various proms fall during our busy wedding season,” she said. “Also, some happen the weekend of Mother’s Day. The earlier the better. Also, this allows for more time to get the exact flowers needed to match your outfits.” Corsages and boutonnieres will be picked up on the day of prom to get the freshest selection possible.

7. When to give them to your date. The first-time dates see each other on prom night, whether it is for pictures, dinner, etc., the corsages and boutonnieres are exchanged. The girl will pin the boutonniere on her date, and the guy will either pin the corsage on the lady’s dress or slip it on her wrist.

Prom is an exciting event that every high schooler will remember for the rest of his or her life.

Make the night a little more special by choosing the ideal corsage and boutonniere. Don’t forget to let them dry and press the flowers after prom is over; that way you’ll be able to keep the designs for years to come.

10 Powerful Ways FCDS is Disrupting Old Teaching Methods

We also know that what they learn and how they learn are essential to preparing students for what’s ahead. So, we’re disrupting the old methods of teaching. How? Check out ten ways we’re doing things differently.

1. Helping local businesses solve real problems.

relatable conversations. “We teach in a natural way,” says Maria Theresa Ortiz-Thompson, who created the Lower School world language curriculum and teaches second to fourth graders. “We don’t focus on the parts of speech. If you speak to one another and tell stories, you access the vocabulary through the story and you retain it better. Grammar and vocabulary come instinctively.”

Business and entrepreneurship students get their hands dirty and tackle real-world problems. They’ve served as consultants for a number of local businesses from restaurants to tech companies. “I tell our business partners up front that while we hope they receive some benefit from the process, it’s really about the learning opportunities for our students,” says Business and Entrepreneurship teacher Mark Palmer. “What we find every time is that the kids learn a great deal and the businesses always come away with at least one or two new ideas they can implement. It’s always a win-win experience.”

Learning a world language also generates a respect and appreciation for people’s similarities and differences. “Part of language learning is the culture,” says Sheila Shearin, who teaches preschool through first grade. “We learn and respect that there are different people with different languages and different ways of doing things. That opens up a lot of curiosity about the world for these children.”

Third grader Sophie Wyshner agrees. “It’s really cool that even though we all have different languages, we can all learn to talk to each other.”

4. Challenging traditional classroom seating.

When you walk into some elementary school classrooms at Forsyth Country Day, you might be surprised to learn that students don’t have assigned seats—they don’t even have to sit in chairs! First grade teacher Happy Bell-Wiatrek, whose room looks more like a coffee shop with tables of different heights and seating options that include cushions, padded milk crates, exercise balls, and rocking Hokki stools, believes strongly in the benefits of flexible seating. “It allows student to be their best learning selves,” she says. “Having choice not only empowers students to be active learners, but allows them to think for themselves.”

Junior Oliver Jewell agrees. “Through my experiences in Business and Entrepreneurship, I have learned the true value of teamwork and hands-on learning,” he says. “Working with actual companies in the Triad has given me the opportunity to fully immerse myself in the business world while learning valuable professional and leadership skills along the way.”

2. Teaching kids how to fail.

At FCDS, failure is an option. In fact, it’s a valuable part of the learning process. This atmosphere is especially important in the school’s middle and high school engineering courses and its Business and Entrepreneurship class.

“Failing teaches you to persevere; it gives you grit,” says Director of Entrepreneurship Nathan Battle. “There are going to be times when you go through the process and your machine doesn’t work out as intended. That happens all the time in entrepreneurship and in engineering. Successful entrepreneurs are people who fail and learn quickly.

Engineering gives you the skills to solve the problems.”

In Mrs. Bell-Wiatrek’s class, students decide where to sit and what to sit on each day, and they move throughout the day when subjects changes. One student who enjoys bouncing on an exercise ball during math may prefer to sit on a cushion during reading, and that’s O.K. “When no one is telling them where to sit and remain for the entire day, and students have choice, they take more responsibility for their own learning,” Mrs. Bell-Wiatrek says.

Seventh grader Ana Calderon concurs. “Failing is a part of life,” she says. Through her study of engineering, she has learned how to accept and even welcome failure. “It teaches you good lessons—what not to do the next time.”

3. Talking in class.

In the FCDS Lower School, students are always talking in class—and that’s a good thing. Conversational Spanish, which is taught daily to students in kindergarten through fourth grade and twice a week to preschoolers, is centered on having MA R CH 2018 / 37

5. Changing at the speed of need.

If educational institutions are vessels on an ocean, most are like cruise ships—though large and strong, they are big, unwieldy, and hard to maneuver. Changing course can take a long time.

“We’re a mission-led institution,” Head of School Gardner Barrier says. “Our mission gives us direction, and our size makes us like a speedboat—we can change when we see the need to do so, in a more agile manner.”

The school made just such a change in the fall when it built a new engineering center and expanded its engineering program—originally reserved for high school students who were serious about becoming engineers—into the Middle School. “Our vision was to develop creative problem solvers who persevere but also understand the the greater contribution of what they do,” says Associate Head of School for Academic Affairs Michelle Klosterman. “Not all students who take engineering in Middle School will come away wanting to be engineers. It’s all about exploration and gaining the skills engineers use in their work and applying them to your life.”

And about being able to see a need and opportunity that would benefit students and seize it—at a moment’s notice.

Some ways in which the school spotlights its core values include bringing in speakers on different core themes, service learning both in school and in the community at large, and— in Lower School—spending time in both the morning and afternoon reflecting on a chosen value. “In addition to defining these values, we’ve devoted time to them,” said Lower School Director Dr. Dennis Moser, Ed.D. “We have reflections at the end of the day. Kids come out of academic mode and ask, ‘How did I treat my friends today?’ or ‘Was I respectful today?’”

9. Making music and a three-point shot.

At FCDS, there really aren’t “theater kids” or “jocks”— because the point guard is probably in the play, too. Students are exposed to a wealth of opportunities outside of the classroom that allow them to find their passion. Whether its playing on one of the school’s athletic teams, participating in a musical or play, making music in the string orchestra or in a choral group, joining a club, or taking the lead in student government, there’s a path to success for every kid at FCDS—and trying different things is encouraged.

“The vast majority of our students participate in both the arts and athletics,” says Upper School Dean of Students Virginia Nichols. “It’s a very inclusive community, and the kids are very supportive of one another.”

6. Trusting the teachers.

Standards are important because they outline the goals for instruction and the learning destination for students, but they don’t need to determine the journey. “In the independent school classroom, teachers are innovators. They get to consider the 1,000-plus ways to reach a destination, and oftentimes the 100-plus journeys we need to take to reach the needs of individual students,” says Dr. Klosterman. “One size doesn’t fit all, and in independent schools, out of necessity and what’s in the best interest of students, we determine our own paths, supported by colleagues and leaders immersed in research on best practice, and in ongoing conversations about how to best support our students.”

7. Building a community of learners.

At FCDS, teachers are all members of a division (the elementary, middle, or high school levels), but they’re also members of the school as a whole. Within and across divisions, teachers meet and collaborate, providing unique perspectives on the evolving needs of learners and directly seeing the impact of their work on students as they grow. “We are a community of learners,” Dr. Klosterman says. “We engage in conversations around best practices in teaching and learning that impact ALL students.”

Instead of relying on a pre-packaged character program, Forsyth Country Day built its five core values—respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion, and curiosity—into daily life at the school. “We are constantly reinforcing our core values

Although Forsyth Country Day is known as an excellent collegepreparatory school, developing students as people is just as important. “We’re not merely helping kids get into college, or preparing them for the next grade,” Mr. Barrier says. “We’re concerned with who they are when they show up.”

Personal development is stressed as part of the school’s mission, and there are many layers of support that help students be their best selves. Counselors in all three divisions, a robust advisory system, and an acclaimed college counseling program combine to help students achieve all of which they are capable. The school also ensures its students stay mindful of their own wellness through discussions of healthy eating and exercise, stress management, and nurturing personal relationships over spending time on devices.

“Where we go to college is important, but it’s secondary to our outcomes as human beings,” Mr. Barrier says. “We’re dedicated to preparing our students for everything that’s ahead so that they’re ready for the next step, no matter what that may be.”

Making a Difference in the Lives of Children

2001, a group of philanthropists came together for a common purpose—to establish a fund that would be directed at services to benefit children throughout North Carolina. The Rye Foundation is named for the three primary focuses of the organization: religion, youth, and education. For 17 years, their generous donations have supported camps, music programs, sports teams, and children in unique circumstances, such as those who have lost military parents; those who have a parent in prison; or those who have special needs.

In 2018, the Rye Foundation will celebrate the milestone achievement of making over $1 million in cumulative gifts to children’s projects.

An ongoing priority for the Board of Directors is to support Christian youth camps across the state. Rye Foundation president, Warren Steen, shared, “We have provided funding for camps from Clemmons to Caswell Beach, and from Hendersonville to Hertford.”

“Our camp donations are designed to benefit the children served by the camp,” Warren explained. “Our Board of Directors is diligent about awarding funds to camps that will yield tremendous, long-term benefits for the children served. It’s like the saying goes, ‘We’re building wells, knowing we may never drink from it.’”

The gifts have ranged from construction and playground projects to camp scholarships to curriculum materials, Bibles, and more.

“A recent project we supported,” Warren elaborated, “was for Camp Vandemere in Pamlico County. In 2011, they suffered severe damage from Hurricane Irene, and the camp was closed for several years as a result.

With donations, including a $25,000 gift from the Rye Foundation, the camp reopened and for the last two years, over 1700 boys and girls enjoyed the benefits of summer camp.”

Delegates from the Rye Foundation are often invited to see the impact of their donations. Seeing refurbished and remodeled camps being enjoyed by smiling children is a reward beyond measure. Warren reflected, “Our tour of Camp Vandermere was incredible. The flooding from Hurricane Irene had been severe, and to see the camp reopened, and providing services to children—including specialty weeks focused on service to those who are deaf or hearing-impaired, as well as children who are developmentally disabled—it’s a tremendous joy. We love to serve all children, but for those who have specialized needs, we know the Rye Foundation is helping to make a difference.”

“Last summer, I received a special invitation to tour Military Camp Week at Camp Hanes,” said Warren.

“Every year, Camp Hanes dedicates a week exclusively to serve children who have a parent who was wounded or killed in service. Sponsored by the Golden Corral, this is called Camp Corral Week. Last year, 265 children participated in Camp Corral Week, but we learned that there were 100 more children

on a waiting list. The Rye Foundation has been able to establish a grant for scholarship support to make sure more children of military families can enjoy the benefits of Camp Corral!”

Similarly, Camp Caraway and Camp Mundo Vista have both set aside designated weeks for children who have a parent or step-parent in prison.

Warren admitted that, “These are the greatest challenges, and with those come the greatest opportunities. The ratio of camp counselor to child is modeled based on the needs of the children and enables the staff to give boys and girls the personalized, focused attention they need. In many cases, this is the first taste of authority, cooperation, and order these children experience.

The Rye Foundation is proud to help support these kinds of initiatives.”

The work being supported by the Rye Foundation has lasting, even eternal significance. Warren observed that a recent study showed that “camp experiences can help foster an understanding [of] and heartfelt desire to enter ministry work.” One camp interviewed over 300 young adults who had served as counselor during their college years and one-third of them decided to enter the ministry, meaning that Christian summer camps are an ideal training ground for future ministers, missionaries, and faith-based workers.

In 2016, the Rye Foundation chose to honor one of their greatest, and most humble, donors. The late Ray Bryan had a heart for children, and after his death, the Ray Bryan Award was established to give $25,000 each year to a children’s charity that “makes a strong and life-changing impact on children and youth.” The first two recipients are stellar examples—Young Life on the Crystal Coast in Morehead City; and The Refuge Camp Ministry in Ayden.

Warren Steen organized and mobilized a group of philanthropists to establish the Rye Foundation. He serves as President of the organization.

Some of the recent beneficiaries of the Rye Foundation include: • Camp Caraway in Randolph County received a $65,500 donation.

• Camp Caswell at Oak Island received a donation of $47,250.

Kamp Kiwanis in Lexington received $47,000.

• Victory Junction Camp in Randleman received $45,000.

Camp is an opportunity not only to build memories and have fun, but a way to experience life-changing moments that can help shape and mold our youth.

you try to determine whether or not camp is the right activity for your child, it helps to know the benefits as well. Not only can the knowledge aid you in your decision, prioritizing what your child or children will get from their experience can help you choose a camp that best suits them.

CHILDREN WHO ATTEND CAMP: Gain Independence

The first and most obvious benefit is the sense of independence that a child gains by being on their own at camp. Although they are still in a supervised and safe environment, they are given greater responsibility in taking care of their own needs. This especially rings true in an overnight camp vs. day camp. Determining how much independence your child wishes to take on will help you choose which type of stay they are ready to enjoy.

Expand Their Palette (Literally and Figuratively!)

It’s nothing to take personally, but for a parent, it’s simply a fact: kids are more likely to try new things when you aren’t around. On a very basic level, palette expansion begins at serving time.

The food offered isn’t optional, which inspires your hungry camper to try new things without the bucking and whining sometimes seen at your home dinner table. The result is that they often return home with an expanded list of what they are willing to add to their plate. On a less literal level, kids are gently pushed outside their comfort zone.

As they see everyone else jumping into a lake that they would normally not venture a toe near, or planning a skit for the talent show, the positive pressure of peer groups enjoying new things draws them to dive into new adventures.

Find Their Voice Most camps are tailored to provide multiple opportunities for decision-making, from choosing knitting over archery to trying a little stand-up on “open mic” night.

Children get similar choices in school, but it is often harder for them to find their real voice under the authoritative relationship necessary for that environment. At camp, the camaraderie between a camper and his or her counselor encourages a more open and free mind. While camps still have high levels of supervision, the setting is more conducive to kids’ finding their voice— hence, finding themselves.

Pursue a Passion With options no longer just about day camps or overnight camps and tents versus cabins, kids now have a plethora of themed camps to choose from.

This is a fantastic opportunity to sharpen skills, foster curiosity and see if a ‘like’ is truly a passion. Just a few of the camp activities available include drama, sailing, marine biology (Sea World), sports, space, academics (Ferrum College provides an on-campus experience), magic, modeling, gaming, and cooking.

Gain a Sense of Pride As your kids are trying all these new things, they are bound to develop a sense of accomplishment and pride in their achievements. Tackling a new task and realizing that you are capable is one of the most valuable takeaways from a camp experience. It encourages a sense of bravery and willing attitude.

Create a Summer Job Campers who truly love their experience often return year after year and eventually become camp counselors. Not only is that a great environment to have your young person involved in every summer, it also provides an excellent income, can be an asset on college applications, and garners the skills needed to be a responsible adult.

Form Forever Friendships Last but not least, the friendships that campers build by accompanying others on this wonderful journey together often last a lifetime. The camp is the perfect backdrop to bond with kids who have similar interests.

It is also a valuable opportunity to connect with a broader range of people, find common ground and make connections that remain through the years.

If a camp feels out of your budget, be sure to check with the director for scholarships. Some churches and service groups offer general funding, as well, for children interested in certain types of camps.

Seven FAQs About Summer Camp

have made the decision to send your child to summer camp. Perhaps it is because of your own past summer camp adventures. You hope that they will have the same fun and fond memories of summertime spent outdoors with friends. Most likely, the same reasons your parents sent you.

Yet, there is a difference. You are the parent this time, and it is your children heading off on their own.

Though you are excited for them, you also have concerns and questions. You are not alone.

Here are seven of the most common FAQs asked by parents just like you.

Brandy Metcalf, a camp senior high counselor from Laurel Ridge Summer Camp, thoughtfully answered some of these questions. She has been a counselor there for more than ten years.

1. Should I write to my child while they are at camp?

“Yes, absolutely parents should write! It is so important for kids to be able to connect with their families while they are away at camp.”

This is one great way to help a child battling with homesickness. In addition, they will feel connected with what is happening at home.

2. What are the age ranges of the counselors?

Are they background checked?

“To be a counselor for senior high, you must be at least 23, to create enough age difference between the campers and the counselors. Yes, everyone is background checked.”

Camp qualifications are all a little different and typically based on camp setting, focus and position. According to Camp Staff USA, camp counselors must be at least 18 years of age.

3. Are safety precautions set?

Yes, all camps should have ACA Accreditation.

This proves that a camp has had a regular, independent safety audit that goes beyond regulations in most states. Accreditation is much more than just licensing. The ACA Accreditation program has two main purposes. First, is to educate camp owners and directors of important areas, such as the health and safety of campers and staff. Second, they want to help parents and guardians choose a camp that meets industryaccepted and government-recognized standards.

However, no accreditation can guarantee safety.

It does give parents a great relief when the camp shows dedication in offering the safest and most sincere care possible.

4. What are my kid’s eating options? How does your camp handle food allergies and sensitivities like peanuts and tree nuts, dairy and gluten?

“Kids or parents/guardians fill out forms prior to coming to camp. This allows the camp to prepare for all allergies. The camp offers a wide variety of food options. At Laurel Ridge, it ranges from pizza to veggies to salad to tacos. Thus, it gives campers healthy alternatives.”

According to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), one in 13 children in the United States has food allergies. These reactions can range from mild to life threatening. The American Camp Association has taken this information seriously. They are teaching and educating camps about food allergies.

5. What are discipline policies?

“Discipline depends on what they do to break the rules. The severest of punishments is a camper going home from camp due to behavior.”

Most camps seem to have similar discipline policies set in place.

Moreover, all campers must understand and follow the guidelines set forth. First offence is typically a warning. Second is time out from the group and activities. Finally, a third strike is a written warning sent to parents with a discussion of the issue at hand.

6. What should they pack?

“I have a HUGE list of things to bring each year that I continue to add to year after year. It includes safe ingredient sunscreen, safe ingredient bug spray, shampoo & conditioner, pillows, blankets, a flashlight, a hammock, a water bottle, sheets for my bed, plenty of clothes and so much more!”

7. How do you respond to homesickness?

“As far as being homesick goes, at least one kid goes home every year because they are homesick. However, church camp is an incredible environment, one that is safe and sacred. If you’re really engaging and there for the right reasons, home is the last thing on the brain!”

The most important thing for all concerned is that your children have the safest and most memorable time at summer camp!

BY DR. DEBBIE LINVILLE Each month, I spotlight two books guaranteed to delight readers and provide fun activities to further extend the meaning of each reading experience. With so many wonderful titles available, this is no easy task! I bring a 34-year teaching career, literacy expertise, and a passion for creating joyful readers to every column I write. I certainly hope you enjoy this month’s picks as much as I do.

GROWING UP

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” ~ e.e.cummings According to psychologist Peter Gray, Ph.D. (Free to Learn, 2013), children are biologically designed to pay attention to the other children in their lives as they grow up, to try to fit in with them, to be able to do what they do, and to know what they know. When the majority of a child’s time is spent with other children, it is easy to understand the reason clothing, hobbies, sports, taste in music, language, and many other things often mimic those of friends.

It is also easy to appreciate the weight friends’ words of affirmation and hurtful comments have on a child’s self-esteem.

Unlike children in previous generations, Dr. Gray states that today’s children are more frequently under adult supervision in and outside of school, spend more time alone with technological “gadgets” (television included), and are less likely to play outdoors with neighborhood children. Just forty years ago, growing up meant staying outdoors until it got dark, riding bikes, climbing trees, playing on the backyard swing set, and endless games of hopscotch.

Children today would likely find many of the everyday experiences that comprised their parents’ childhood hard to believe.

CHILDHOOD THEN AND NOW: CAR: Then: Used hands to work a car—pull up a lock to open the door; turn a crank to open the window; use a key to open the trunk, etc.

Now: Push a button (or use voice activation) for everything to work in the car: unlocking/locking, raising/lowering windows; opening the trunk, adjusting the radio, etc.

SEATBELT: Then: Seatbelts were optional. It was possible to sit in the middle of the front seat or sleep on the ledge along the back windshield.

Now: Safety restraints for drivers and children from birth to 16; car seats (rearfacing and front-facing), booster seats, and seatbelts.

TELEVISION: Then: Most families had one television with 13 channels, and turning the knob on the set was required to change the channels and volume; adjusting the foilcovered rabbit ears that sat on top of the set improved the reception.

The Warden’s Daughter Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli (Maniac Magee, Stargirl) shares the story of loss, kindness, and redemption of Cammie O’Reilly, a spirited twelveyear-old girl who lives in an apartment above the entrance to the Pennsylvania Hancock County Prison with her father, the warden. Now: Plentiful options are available— computers, voice-controlled, cloud-based devices (e.g., Echo), smartphones, stereo systems that play CDs, DVDs, blue rays, etc.

PHONE: Then: Answering the phone was the only way to know who was calling. The phone was connected to the handset/ receiver by a 6-foot coiled cord; phone numbers were looked up in the phone book—residential in the White Pages and businesses in the Yellow Pages.

Now: Caller ID, special ringtones, popups on television, etc., announce callers.

Most people have cell phones; the majority are smartphones with unlimited data, talk, and text. With one click, any phone number can be accessed and dialed.

KNOTS IN MY YO-YO STRING: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A KID This early autobiography of Spinelli’s memories of his many “firsts”—first kiss, first punch, first trip to the principal’s office, first sports faux pas, first loss of a family pet, and other universal “firsts” is told in a way that tweens and adults alike can relate to. This highly engaging and humorous memoir of an ordinary boy from Norristown, Pennsylvania in the 1950s can easily be the personal narrative of many (now) sixtysomethings. In addition to entertaining readers with reflections on his childhood, Spinelli also documents the beginnings of his life as an author. “No writer guides his young characters past these pitfalls and challenges and toward their futures with more compassion.” (The New York Times).

THE TRUTH ABOUT SMARTPHONES AND TEENAGERS

“Everyone

has a phone except me! Can I have a phone, please! Please! I promise I will be responsible with it!” For parents who have been awaiting this inevitable question in tones of begging, guilt-producing, and with a nice touch of sincerity—in our own minds, we have probably already debated the pros and cons of allowing our child to have a cell phone. Safety, and the ability for our child to reach us, anytime and anywhere, gives parents the slight edge in surrendering; yet, it’s difficult to truly know when the right time is. The pre-teen years are challenging, as boys and girls are struggling with their own identity and emotions, and the awkwardness of budding sexuality. We hear the term “cyberbullying” and about children who conceal interactions through social media. It is easy to wonder how a cell phone truly impacts the lives of today’s teens.

ONE POST TO HUMILIATE Remember the days when two classmates met in the middle of the hallway or after school to dispute something heard through the grapevine? In less than ten minutes, the situation had vanished, and most likely, the two classmates were again on good terms with one another. In the digital age, one post could welcome anyone who wished to comment and immediately heighten the discussion to the point of humiliation. A fight may occur the following day, or a more serious consequence, a suicide attempt; both of which have been documented in recent news.

ONE POST TO DATING EXPECTATIONS Images of scantily clad women can easily be found through an online search. One degree less than pornography, some teens believe a condition for an evening out is to receive a naked photo. Young women surrender themselves for the hope of trust and being liked. What happens to this one photo? Too often, the picture is just a game, and tossed around among friends, or, posted for anyone to see.

THE 48-HOUR CHALLENGE In November of 2017, parents were warned about a new social media game teens termed “The 48-hour challenge.” The game encouraged teens to disappear for 48 hours without notifying their family or friends. Police departments and parents instantly responded to this game, angry to think precious public resources would be wasted in exchange for points. An

additional teen game is called “Blue Whale Challenge.” (The 50th task is a live broadcast of the participant’s death.) Life is not a game, nor can the reset button be pressed!

1000 SIMULTANEOUS RELATIONSHIPS: We can see one problem. Family time is consumed with not interaction, but technology. Without rules, parents, are finding their children are obsessed with the instant gratification of feedback. Many teens may claim they have a strong social life simply because their friends on social media total 1000 plus. Popularity isn’t about visibility, but the opportunity to be independent without parents, appearing cool, flirting, and impressing the opposite sex.

BREAK THROUGH CONCEALMENT! Parents can go beyond checking texts and social media accounts, and determine whether their teen may be concealing additional accounts. One method is to log out of their Instagram or Facebook account and see if multiple accounts appear.

Parents can also go to “settings” and check the number of e-mail accounts listed on the phone. If two e-mail accounts are listed, then, multiple accounts can easily be concealed.

Chrome or another web provider may be used to gain access.

THE FAMILY CELL PHONE Yes, the decision to give your child a Smartphone is daunting.

With most households eliminating a landline, the need for an extra mobile phone becomes necessary, especially as children are spending more time away from the home with classmates, or attending extracurricular activities by the time of middle school. A family phone with the restricted ability to call and text may be the first step in phone ownership.

We realize the bells and whistles on a phone are not a necessity for teens; yet, 58% of all 12-year-olds own a Smartphone, and 75% of all teenagers. As parents, we must be realistic and know our children are engaging in chat sessions, whether private or public, sending inappropriate pictures, and quite possibly concealing social media sites. By being born in the technology age, they are held accountable for knowing the rules, and to “chat” and “post” responsibly. We, also, must surrender to the “gossip” of how teens are utilizing technology. It is here to stay!

THE VALUE OF SPRING SPORTS

The

request to “go outside and play,” often feels like the beginning of a fight with children, who would rather stay indoors and be consumed with some facet of “screen time.” How many ways do parents encourage exercise, playing with friends, and getting some well-needed fresh air? The battle changes when children are registered to participate in an organized sport. Suddenly, a schedule of times and dates is present, filling up several months on the calendar. Only once will parents be asked, “Why do I have to go?” In the thrill of meeting other players and the coach, and engaging in a “fun” practice, children will be eager for the next time they leave the house—perhaps with a glove or cleats. From fields to the courts, youth sports teach diverse skills in the ultimate classroom of rules, practice, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the love of a game!

Registration It begins with curiosity, starting with three important questions: 1. How much is the registration, and what does it cover?

2. How often do the players practice, and when are the games scheduled?

3. When does the season begin and end?

Most of your key questions can be answered through an online site; however, if not, someone will be available to answer questions, either in person or on the phone. You, like many other parents, will want to communicate with a person from the team to feel comfortable with your commitment to the program.

Five- and Six-Year-Old Teams Whether through your elementary school, recreation center, or town league, children, sometimes as young as four, can participate in an organized team sport. From the first scheduled practice, parents will discover their help is often needed to assist young players during accessory transitions, and guiding players on and off the field.

Balance and hand-eye coordination improvements will be noticeable during each practice and game. It may take a season for a young child to grasp the rules; yet, with committed parents and grandparents involved as big fans, young children will absolutely love participating with a team and a coach!

Individualized Sports Once children play a sport they find appealing, they often choose to return.

Success in playing while enjoying the team camaraderie can boost both confidence levels and increase accuracy; yet, children should also consider

expanding their athleticism in diverse directions. Learning a new sport also can be accomplished through individual participation. For children and teens who play a sport, which involves running and arm strength, the ideal sport may be gymnastics, swimming or dance, martial arts, fencing, archery, or golf.

By learning other sports, children and teens will learn new skills and achieve a higher ability in hand-eye coordination, balance, or physical strength.

Summer Camps The love of a game does not end at the last game of the season. Children have learned skills, and now is the chance to apply what they know. Whether indoors or on the field, there are great day- and week-long camps to satisfy the active spirit who is ready to try something new and meet lifelong friends.

Encouragement to turn off the television or video game may be as simple as one registration.

It’s not too late to sign up your child for an organized sport this spring and summer. Now that the school schedule is mastered, there is nothing holding you back from saying, “Yes!” Sitting in the stands and watching a practice or a game, your child will be happy to see you cheering for the team’s accomplishments, and your child’s new ambition to run, bat, kick, and feel successful!

are many schools, and parents even, who believe that music education is not as important as the core subjects—math, reading, science, social studies, and history. There are actually some schools that don’t teach weekly music classes (when schools make budget cuts, music classes are among the first electives to go). This is an unfortunate reality, because there is a myriad of advantages that children gain with music education, whether it is singing, music appreciation, or learning to play an instrument. Below are some of these advantages, particularly for elementary students. The study of music Helps children gain discipline. Learning to play a musical instrument helps children with discipline in many ways.

Learning to play music calls for time management and daily practice. Allotting a specific amount of time and place to practice music trains children to become more disciplined.

Learning an instrument has also been shown to be beneficial in children with ADHD, as it increases their attention and focus, thereby making them more disciplined.

Strengthens memory. Learning how to play an instrument makes one use both hemispheres of their brain. Learning music in general at a younger age is a memory booster, because it improves a child’s learning ability. When performing music, whether it’s singing or playing an instrument, children rely on their strengthened memory to be at their best.

Aids in language development. The left side of the brain is associated with language, and learning music really aids in developing the parts of the brain that are connected to language and reasoning. Also, when teachers marry their subject material with a song (for example, ABCs or naming all 50 states), it helps them retain information much better!

Improves coordination. Playing an instrument makes the young brain work harder in developing motor skills and multitasking. Both sides of the brain are at work when playing an instrument. When the body is at work with clapping hands while singing music, hand-eye coordination is strengthened while helping the student to concentrate on multiple activities.

Improves emotional health and aids coping. Music provides a positive outlet for emotional expression. Children—actually, any musician in general—can escape and find solace and enjoyment in singing songs, listening to music, or playing their favorite instrument. This form of escapism will likely help 62 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

them later in life when coping with life situations; they will be acquainted with healthier outlets. It’s important to note that individuals who are musically inclined are better at coping with anxiety.

Leads to higher test scores. This is likely because music education strengthens abstract reasoning skills that aid in understanding reading and math. Studies show that musically inclined students score higher in these academic areas than students who receive low-quality or no music education.

Develops spatial intelligence. Music education helps students develop spatial skills which help them form mental pictures and perceive the world accurately. Students with strong spatial intelligence are good at solving problems and multistep math equations that come up in architecture and engineering.

Socializes children. Children who are deep in music education are likely to develop exceptional social skills. For example, in an orchestra or band, they must perform in a group and sometimes share the same sheet music. Whether in chorus class, band or orchestra, students learn to work together and form connections among each other. Understanding music strengthens communication skills by helping children express what they feel and think. This helps them relate to others and build friendships as well.

As we see, music education has many positive elements, and among them is relaxation and fun. Learning music can be rewarding and enjoyable to the point where it doesn’t even feel like learning! We should encourage learning music in grade schools and wherever it can be taught—whether at home or at a recreational center or at a music school, or anywhere else. So, let’s spread the music!

Sing Out “You can’t sing.” Surveys say that 85% of us have been told this at least once.

The speaker is saying that they think you hit the wrong notes or your voice wavers or is harsh. But instead of being an opinion, this phrase sounds like a command to be silent and, unfortunately, it may actually have a shaming consequence.

If we forget that the ability to sing is a gift, one that cannot be stolen by a callous individual, we miss out on so many benefits. And besides this we fail to obey a different command, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing.” ~ Psalm 98:4-5.

In addition to being too ashamed to sing aloud, we have lost a great number of the habits which encouraged singing in groups in the past. Every country has its own anthem, which serves to create unity, but the individual is losing sight of this benefit. For the majority of Americans, activities like singing around a campfire or in a church have dwindled.

My college roommate, Meagan, got a ukulele this Christmas and she spends almost all of her free time learning to play her favorite songs and even writing her own, all the while singing along. When I told her about this article and asked her why she liked to sing she said it gave her an open, free feeling that “just talking doesn’t; it requires more emotion.” She continued, “Some people can talk all day but never have the boldness to sing—it is very exposing.”

Refusing to sing because of fear of criticism either from yourself or others takes away a notable way of communication that “just talking” does not always allow. This emotional liberation has been seen to decrease depression and anxiety.

Paul Nelson, who has received a Master’s in musical theater writing, speaks to the idea that singing is an emotional experience when he comments on the popularity of musicals. He says, “The song in a musical is like a close-up in a movie. When you get a movie close-up, you see small emotional changes in the actor’s face, and these communicate emotion.”

Singing out loud, especially now that it is less socially accepted and participated in, takes boldness. You must determine for yourself if the emotional, social, and spiritual benefits outweigh the memory of past, or possibility of future, criticism. If you decide that the benefits outweigh the possible discomfort, turn on the radio and belt along.

Sing with headphones on, sing while you’re doing the dishes, or in the shower, or during those thirty seconds alone in the elevator.

Better yet, join a choir and let your confidence inspire an audience.

However you decide to use your voice, keep in mind that no critic can snatch this gift away—unless, of course, you let them.

The Risks of

Cheerleading

The

American Academy of Pediatrics conducted a report that concluded that the number-one cause of sportsrelated spine, spinal cord, or brain injuries in high school and college-aged girls was cheerleading accidents. Additionally, the research concluded that the impact on a cheerleader taking a fall through gymnastics was greater than the impact of being tackled by a football player.

March is National Cheerleading Safety Month.

This is an important topic because often, the risks of cheerleading are underestimated.

Beyond the injuries listed above, concussions, broken bones, as well as knee, hip, and ankle injuries are real risks that cheerleaders face in the name of supporting the team.

Cheerleading is a sport that requires a tremendous amount of trust in others; that trust is established through clear communication and expectations that are set forth before stunts are attempted. It’s a fun way to exercise, make friends, and support school spirit. However, it should never be assumed that cheerleading is easy or harmless.

To minimize the risks of injuries, be prepared and have safety procedures in place.

Cheerleading safety regulations should include the following: Coaches should be trained and certified.

This is a dangerous sport; coaches need to

understand the risks involved.

• Coaches should clearly communicate expectations, as well as emergency plans to the cheerleaders, spotters, as well as parents.

• Spotters must be properly trained—not only for the safety of the cheerleaders, but for their own safety as well.

• A soft place to practice is a must. Four-inch foam mats should be a standard practice equipment. Practice should only be done on soft surfaces; the basketball court is not an ideal place for cheerleading practice.

• Cheerleading and gymnastics go handin-hand. If your cheerleaders are doing stunts, they should be properly trained by a gymnastics instructor in addition to normal cheerleading practice.

Regular strength-based fitness routines should be a part of cheer training.

• Listen to the cheerleader herself; she should never be pushed into stunts she’s not comfortable doing, nor should she be asked to perform with minor injuries.

• Coaches should monitor skill progression and only allow a cheerleader to move on to more advanced techniques when prior skills are mastered.

Treatment for common cheerleading accidents includes: • Sprained ankles should be treated with ice, elevation, and compression. Medical assistance should be sought if there is severe pain, or the cheerleader cannot walk on it.

• Jumping can lead to knee injuries.

They should be treated with rest, ice, and elevation. Wearing a brace can help support the knee, and of course, proper stretching can help prevent knee injuries.

ONE SOLUTION FOR PROCRASTINATORS MAY ALSO HELP WITH SENIORITIS “I’ll think about that tomorrow.” Procrastination can be difficult; add a dash of spring fever and it becomes a considerable problem for many, especially students this time of year. Some refer to it as “Senioritis,” described by the Urban Dictionary as “a crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. Symptoms include laziness, an over-excessive wearing of track pants, old athletic shirts, sweatpants, athletic shorts, and sweatshirts. Also features a lack of studying, repeated absences, and a generally dismissive attitude. The only known cure is a phenomenon known as Graduation.”

I found this definition quite humorous until I began to realize, having been through this with a high school senior of my own, how true it really is. I’m sure I probably reacted the same way back in my day. After all, the weather’s warming, the days are longer, and anticipation of summer is rising rapidly. Couple this with nearing the end of a long journey, and it’s easy to see how one lets up at the finish line, when in reality they should be sprinting to the tape.

Of course, if senioritis isn’t managed properly, the cure may not be reached, at least not in the expected timeframe, that is. There is good news, however, and it comes in the form of a tip commonly used by sufferers of procrastination. A tip that very well may get your student through this time favorably, and successfully reach the cure of a project or job completion and yes, even graduation.

This procrastination, or reluctance to take care of the things you need to take care of in a timely manner, isn’t something that goes away after you receive your diploma. On the contrary, as responsibilities grow, it can become even more of a problem as you get older. Prioritizing duties evolves into an even bigger challenge, as others in your life consider their portion of your time to be the most important part.

It’s not just in satisfying others’ needs that one procrastinates; even our own needs occasionally get pushed back for one reason or another. Cleaning and organizing, maintenance chores, fitness routines, healthy eating, learning a new skill, staying in touch with friends and family, are all examples of things that lend themselves to procrastinating. It doesn’t have 68 / FORSY T H FAMILYMAG A ZIN E.COM

to be this way, if you learn a valuable trick to overcoming this dreaded deterrent to your success. Passing this along to your son or daughter during this time might just be the solution they need. So what is this valuable advice, you ask?

It involves something I learned a while back that was probably the most helpful advice I’d heard relating to this topic. In straightforward terms, it said the easiest way to overcome procrastination is simply to get started. Meaning, you don’t have to finish your project in a day, or even make significant progress, for that matter—you simply need to just get started, and take the first step. That first step leads to another, then another, and before you know it you’re checking it off your To Do list. A common phenomenon occurs when you take this approach. You’ll find that once you get to a certain point in the process you’ll begin to see results and the end in sight. This motivational factor propels you to reach the finish line. And it really does work.

More often than not, I’ve found projects that I put off, thinking they would take too long to complete, which, when once attempted, took far less time than I imagined. Tasks which I originally thought would take hours ended up taking half the time (especially if help was involved.)

It sounds a little over-simplified, I know. But what do you have to lose? Remember you’re not tackling the whole project at once; one small step is all it takes to get started. So it takes a little longer, as long as you get the job completed in the end, that’s all that matters. Of course, you have to alter this slightly when, in the case of a student, a deadline is involved. Yet the principle is still the same.

In reality, we all know time is our most valuable commodity.

So why not make the best of it? Remedy those things in life, no matter how long it takes, that bog you down and limit your ability to enjoy other parts of your life. For students, the efforts lead to the reward of good grades and graduation. For the rest of us, it leads to more time for the things we value most, including peace of mind.

Do you like to watch and feed the birds around your home? Since some birds fly to a warmer place for the winter, it’s a happy day when they come back again. Have you noticed any little green sprouts poking up through the ground or on the tree branches? Spring is popping out all around us.

Spring is the time for new life. It’s also the time we celebrate Easter. For many people, Easter means flowers and bunnies and eggs. How can flowers, bunnies, and eggs make you think of new life?

If you go to church or your family reads the Bible together, you already know the real story of “new life.” Not very long ago, we celebrated Christmas—the birthday of Jesus, God’s little boy. When that baby grew up to be a man, he died to wash away all of our sins, all of our yuck.

What’s so amazing is that Jesus didn’t stay in the cold, dark ground. He came alive again! And that’s why we celebrate Easter.

Christmas is like a big birthday party for Jesus. Easter is like a big “new life” birthday party for him. When Jesus got his new life, he went to live with his Father God in heaven. Now Jesus wants to give each of us a new life, too. In the Bible, this is called being “born again.” (See John 3:3 and 1 Peter 1:23) Do you know how to get this new, forever life? It starts out as easy as praying, “Jesus, I want this new life. Someday I want to live in heaven with you.” Your mom and dad or Sunday school teacher can help you understand this better. As you read and learn and pray, you’ll grow up to be who God wants you to be.

There’s more to Christmas than bright lights, decorated trees, and presents; and there’s more to Easter than colored eggs in a basket and marshmallow bunnies. Both of these special days are reminders that Jesus loves YOU and wants YOU to have this new life that will last forever.

When

my son was 15, he got what’s called a “Jones Fracture” after landing on his foot the wrong way during football practice. When it happened, it didn’t seem like a huge deal. In fact, he finished out practice, got cleaned up, and then took part in a chorus concert that same night! Unfortunately, the x-rays that were taken the next day revealed a fracture that would end up being quite a big deal after all.

A Jones Fracture is a crack right in the middle of the bone that runs along the outside of your foot, your fifth metatarsal.

A fracture in that exact spot on that specific bone is notorious for not healing well without help. When it happened, the doctor told us that there was only about a 50% chance it would heal without surgical intervention. So, after wearing a cast and hobbling around school on crutches for a couple weeks with no improvement to the fracture, we felt we had no choice but to agree to the surgery. The doctor placed a screw inside the bone which forced the fracture closed and allowed the bone to knit itself back together. Thankfully, the surgery went off without a hitch and, after a couple months, Andrew was back on the football field.

Life doesn’t always work the way it’s supposed to, does it?

Hurts sometimes, often times, run too deeply to be healed without help. Hobbling around with a broken heart is no way to live. Are you in that place today? If so, I’m praying that you will seek help. Find a good, Christian counselor or wise friend who can help walk you through the journey to healing. And, of course, pray. Pray that our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and our Prince of Peace will penetrate into the depth of your pain, pulling everything together and healing the places that are broken.

A Pat on the Back

We

all need a pat on the back sometimes for a job well done -at our jobs, at home, in our social groups. As Christians, we’re called to be an encouragement to others wherever God has called us. It’s part of spreading the Good News because Christ gives us joy. A smile and a compliment can go a long way! Still, we’re promised trials and tribulation. Besides finding comfort and hope in God’s promises, we need healthy ways to free our minds of the worry that ensnares us. Encouragement, refreshment and recreation help us to rejuvenate and find our balance.

Many don’t realize that Pastors struggle too.

They have spouses and children, emergency expenses, emotional highs and lows. Some pastors feel isolated, that no one cares about how they’re doing. Why not “Be the One!” to give your pastor a pat on the back? Take him out for coffee or fishing. He’ll thank you!

God’s Timing

I wish

I’d had the foresight to write this for the January issue. My word of the year is “Timing.” If you’ve never heard of a word of the year, it’s something I was introduced to a couple of years ago. As the name implies, it’s a focal word for a year of spiritual growth. I did it for the first time in 2017, and it truly blessed me (my 2017 word was “Selah,” which means to pause, praise, and pray). Got put “timing” on my heart for 2018, and several conversations solidified the choice.

It’s a perfect word choice for me as I wait for a particular prayer to be answered. I try to be patient, but waiting on God with a stopwatch—it’s just not the most efficient use of our time.

Most Christians struggle with God’s timing. Personally, I spent much of 2017 in a pattern of waiting, and so far, I’m still circling the runway. And that’s okay. We don’t like to wait to begin with, and since we serve an all-powerful God for whom nothing is impossible, it’s hard to understand why He doesn’t just do stuff instantaneously. Especially when our requests are Biblically within His will.

“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” ~ Psalm 27:14 For me, timing represents several things: waiting, trust, hope, faith, and patience. I am waiting for God’s timing.

I am trusting in His timing. I have hope in His timing. I have faith that His timing will be perfect.

I am patient because I know He hears my prayers; I know my prayers line up with His will, and I know He will answer me. I know this from three verses that I regularly focus on:

John 14:13-14 says, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

Of course, motive is a key part of that, so there’s a secondary verse from 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” We can’t expect answers to our prayers if they are rooted in selfish motivation. They have to line up with God’s will.

The third verse that brings me great comfort as I’m waiting for His timing is from James 5:16b, “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

While I’m waiting, I take great comfort in the story of Daniel. In Daniel 10, Daniel is visited by an angel who says in verse 12, “‘Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.’”

Can you imagine?? The key phrase from this passage is “since the first day you began to pray.” When we pray a sincere prayer that is in line with God’s will, heaven begins to move. And God is working, even when the minutes tick away on the clock, and we can’t see anything happening.

Tapping the watch face (and sometimes your foot) and thinking, “Anytime now, Lord!” will not speed Him up.

But here’s the first lesson from my word of the year: God is never late. He shows up on time, every time.

Habakkuk 2:3 says, “This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”

Wait patiently. It will not be delayed. But everything will happen in God’s perfect timing. And when it does—our patience satisfied, we will see clearly why God’s timing was so precise. And we will give Him the credit and praise He so richly deserves.

FRESH Expressions of Church There

is a growing population within mainline Protestant congregations who do not want to go to church anymore. I confess, I do not blame them.

The culture of Christianity reigned sovereign over the past several generations and deeply imprinted a sincere and genuine faith in Jesus Christ with a belief in the notion of sacred Sunday mornings and social niceties Now, as this culture continues its decline, impacted by a myriad of differing trends and shifts, many who pledged allegiance to Christian culture and institutional religion are struggling with the decline: pastors fudge attendance records and reporting; churches compete for the attention of millennials; congregations bemoan the missing children and young families who filled their pews in the 1950s.

Many leaders are quick to scapegoat globalization, technology or the travel soccer schedule. Regardless, the trend is clear: people do not want to go to church anymore.

They don’t want to get dressed up, sit still for an hour, be preached at, solicited for funds or guilted into giving—especially for a new building. (Crystal Cathedral Ministries board filed for bankruptcy in 2010 citing a $36 million mortgage debt,

proving that just because you build it, does not mean they will come. Ouch!).

At its origin, church was never intended to be something you “do” on Sunday morning or a place to go to worship.

Church is a body of believers. A movement marked by hope and radical forgiveness. It’s a redeemed and redeeming fellowship where Jesus Christ is King. This growing crowd, resisting an antiquated church culture, may in fact be the grounds for new life and regeneration in the Christian faith.

No, people do not want to go to church, but I’m fully convinced people do want to gather in peace. They want a grace-filled community where they may express and explore their faith. They long for a space to ask sincere questions and receive relevant answers. People desperately want a way to serve their community, to impact the lives of people in need, and to witness life transformation. People want to love and to be loved. That has never changed and will never change with the culture.

Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to attend a conference focusing on fresh expression of church. Church leadership, clergy and laity, gathered to prayerfully consider how we could listen to the needs of our communities and respond

in mission and ministry—apart from Sunday morning. Bishop Graham Cray, spokesperson for the Fresh Expressions movement, identified a key question for every church to consider: who will never be reached if we only do [the same thing every Sunday morning]?

What a great question to journey with, as we navigate this season of Lent and set our hearts and hopes on Resurrection Sunday. Who will never know the forgiving grace of God or the joy and peace of reconciled life, if we only “do” Sunday Morning? How will we be church to those who refuse to go to church?

I believe the renewed future of Christ’s Church sits, percolating, in this era of decline. I believe fresh expressions of church are about to emerge. I believe these new expressions will bear the fragrance of Christ’s redeeming love and will thus draw new believers into communities committed to mission, justice and peace. Who knows where the Holy Spirit will take us Monday through Saturday: perhaps a supper club, brewery, biking community? Perhaps that fresh expression may be the spark that ignites a passion for a new generation to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. *For more information, visit freshexpressionsus.org

“Women Who Care” Thanks the Community for Their Help in Recent Project

happens on the first niceweather day after the big snow storm? Community commitment by diverse persons dedicated to collaborating for a common cause—excellent eye care.

Women Who Care, a partner of the Clemmons Community Foundation, would like to thank multiple professionals who shared a goal to promote healthy eyesight for all.

Hosted by Women Who Care and the Winston-Salem Twin Host Lions Club, the Lions Club Mobile Eye Screening Unit visited Clemmons United Methodist Church to serve the clients of the Clemmons Food Pantry.

Paul Bledsoe, Past President of NC Lions Foundation and Past District Governor of Lions Clubs International District I, and the Winston-Salem Twin Host Lions Club, not only coordinated and donated the stipend to host the Mobile Screening Unit but also facilitated services provided by volunteers and professionals.

Blood pressure checks and glucose screening were also available, as well as pamphlets with heart-healthy menus and nutrition options, another critical component of eye care.

Bryan Hoover, the Statewide Coordinator of the NC Lions Mobile Screening Unit that travels to locations throughout NC, set up and dismantled the Mobile Unit, patiently taught volunteers how to use machines and monitored patient care the entire day.

Dr. Kelly Reid of Davis Eye Associates; Dr. Andrew Bradbury of Carolina Center for Eye Care; Dr. Sharhonda Bell Harrill, Eric Kennedy, Sheena and Sara Faude from Eye Care Center on Stratford Road and in Winston-Salem and Dr. Brian Baker from Clemmons provided superb eye exams and further referrals. These compassionate professionals in our community volunteered their time to examine and talk with patients to improve their eye health and to advise the next steps available to each.

Nurses Carlynn Barefoot, Rita Crawford, Steve Puckett and Briana Holt (volunteering on her birthday!) provided critical blood pressure and glucose screenings for patients.

Dr. Mark Hess of the Clemmons Community Foundation and of Storehouse for Jesus assisted in gathering the donated glucose screening kits and blood pressure cuffs.

Paula Christakos of Clemmons Chick-fil-A donated water bottles and lunches, as well as a visit by the Chick-fil-A cow to cheer patients and volunteers.

Patients and volunteers expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage with a variety of local persons on a beautiful day for an exemplary cause.

It’s a GRAND Life Some Things Grandparents Can Teach Their Grandchildren

My

life has changed in the last few months in a very good way.

I love being in Wilmington with the beach just a few miles away; getting ready to build my dream home on a beautiful water setting; knowing two of my three daughters will be my neighbors; but most importantly, having my sweet grandchildren a stone’s throw away.

I recently came across an article about things we can teach our grandchildren.

It made me think of things I want my grands to remember about me telling, teaching or showing them. With their ages ranging from almost two to 10, I will be repeating some of these a number of times; but that just means more times I get to spend with them and, hopefully, educating them — a win-win situation!

HISTORY - It is amazing how many inventions have come along that have completely changed my life as a child to that of my grandchildren. While most have made lives easier, not all have made them better. I want to let my grands know more about our progression than what they learn in school. For example, how technology has invaded our lives to the detriment of quality family time.

FAMILY HISTORY - I remember many tales my parents told me about my grandparents and, of course, memories I have regaled my daughters with involving my parents and grandparents. Thankfully, my maternal grandmother was very into genealogy, so we have my mother’s lineage traced back centuries. Unfortunately, my paternal grandmother didn’t have that same passion. I wish I knew more about that side of the family, but, maybe, this is something one or more of my grands and I can work on together when they are older.

NEW SKILLS - There are a number of skills that used to be front and center with the older generation. My mother was an excellent seamstress. I regret that I do not possess that talent, but I can teach them to knit, smock and make simple clothing repairs. We will have fun baking and cooking (my four-year-old grandson loves to

do this). I would love to write stories with them and teach them songs to play on the piano. My father-in-law had a wonderful woodworking shop. My daughters loved making things with their Papa. It was time together, that besides learning a skill, brought them a special closeness. So many ways to keep them away from technology — at least for a while.

WISDOM - This does not have to be earth-shattering information. Imparting even simple life lessons are very important. We learn from our mistakes but also from our successes. I want my grandchildren to understand that failure is not the falling down but the staying down.

HUMOR - It is important for my grands to see my fun, silly side. I want them to know that I can laugh at myself and enjoy a harmless prank. They need to be able to laugh at themselves as well and find humor in many situations.

LISTENING - My four-year-old grandson was an early talker and we all joke that he hasn’t stopped since. My five-yearold granddaughter asks questions throughout a movie but hardly stops to hear an answer. Family stories, reading to them, teaching them not to interrupt, and having a giveand-take conversation will improve their listening skills — a wonderful skill to possess.

Fostering a relationship that includes emotional support will be a means for them to have a sounding board of someone who doesn’t spend every day with them, that listens and only gives advice when asked. It is the time spent together while imparting your knowledge and skills that will form a bond that may be the best lesson of all.

Family Day Trip Idea: Roanoke, VA

What

many of you may not realize is that Roanoke, Virginia is only about two hours from Winston-Salem. It is a fabulous city for a day trip or a weekend excursion. If you head out early morning, you can arrive in time to tackle a venue before lunch, then grab a bite to eat, and hit one or two more hotspots before either grabbing dinner or heading back home.

Below are three “chunks” of ideas. Basically, you can choose to do one of these in the morning and one in the afternoon. If you eventually want to do all three, it’s a good excuse to spend the night or come back!

IDEA #1—Mill Mountain Area Our favorite tourist spot is Mill Mountain Park. This might be a great stop for your initial arrival to “The Noke!” Head to the top of the mountain and visit The “Roanoke Star.” It’s a fabulous photo spot and also gives you a beautiful view of the city. The Roanoke Star was initially created solely to be a Christmas decoration, but now stays lit year-round.

Also on Mill Mountain is a fun area to sit and enjoy a snack at the nearby picnic tables, or play on the playground. There are also nearby trails and a wildflower garden to explore.

As you make your way down the mountain from the star, your next stop will be Mill Mountain Zoo. It is open seven days a week from 10am-5pm. The Zoo Choo, a miniature model G-16 train, runs seven days a week, weather permitting. Admission prices are $9 for adults, $7 for children 3-11 and children 2 and under are free. The average zoo visit is about two hours, so plan accordingly.

There is no restaurant on the grounds.

For lunch, once you leave the Mill Mountain area, I suggest either Wasena Tap Room, Fork in the Alley, The Green Goat, or River and Rail.

IDEA #2—Roanoke River Greenway Area The Roanoke River Greenway is a beautiful 25-mile paved pathway that runs through a wide variety of settings, including shopping and dining areas as well as quiet neighborhoods and parks. Your family can walk or you may choose to bring the bikes along for even more fun.

As you ride or walk, you can stop at shopping spots, restaurants, parks, etc. Black Dog Salvage is highly recommended for shopping. A great spot to stop for lunch is Wasena Tap Room. They have a great kids’ menu, and the River Rock Climbing Gym is right next door. The gym is great for all abilities and ages. The other restaurants that I mentioned in Idea #1 are all close to the Greenway, as well, and would be great lunch or dinner spots. And when you are ready for a sweet treat, stop at Blue Cow Ice Cream. This is Roanoke’s small-batch ice cream company that is simply amazing!

IDEA #3—Downtown Area Start off with a ride on the downtown trolley! The Star Line Trolley is a free trolley service offered in the City of Roanoke.

It connects the Historic Market District to the nearby Crystal Spring Neighborhood.

The main downtown museum is called Taubman Museum of Art and has a great area for kids called Art Venture.

It is $5 per person, and free for children 23 months and younger. Note that they are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays. A more kid-friendly museum downtown is

the Science Museum of Western Virginia at Center in the Square. Your kids will find plenty of hands-on activities and hours of fun! It is $15 for adults, $13.50 for ages 6-17, $7.50 for children 3-5, and free for infants and toddlers. This admission fee includes all the exhibits, as well as the Butterfly Garden & Bug Zoo. Other venues you may want to hit while visiting downtown Roanoke are Elmwood Park, the Roanoke Pinball Museum (closed on Mondays), the Farmer’s Market (every Saturday downtown with fruits, veggies, art, music, activities, gifts), Mill Mountain Theatre and Roanoke Children’s Theatre (great kid-friendly productions). Good eats downtown are Jack Brown’s (burgers), authentic Mexican at Alejandro’s, and gigantic pizza at Benny Marconi’s.

Athletes, especially those of contact sports are at a high risk of oral injuries. Many of these injuries can be avoided by using a mouth guard. A mouth guard is a soft gel or laminate device that helps prevent injuries to the mouth, cheeks, tongue and jaw. Any athlete can use it, but kids involved in collision or contact sports should give the equipment special consideration.

The American Dental Association recommends wearing custom mouth guards for the following sports: acrobats, basketball, boxing, field hockey, football, gymnastics, handball, ice hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, roller hockey, rugby, shot putting, skateboarding, skiing, skydiving, soccer, squash, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, and wrestling.

All mouth guards generally only cover the upper teeth and provide varying degrees of protection. The most effective mouth guard should be: • Resilient and tear-resistant and properly fitted • Comfortable and doesn’t restrict speech or breathing • Durable and easy to clean It’s important to rinse the mouth guard with cold water or an antiseptic rinse before and after each use. You can also clean it with a toothbrush and toothpaste. When not being used, store the mouth guard in a firm perforated container that allows air circulation and prevents damage. Inspect the mouth guard for tears or holes and feel free to bring your child’s mouth guard to regular dental checkups for review.

LOADED CHICKEN TACO CUPS

SPINACH ARTICHOKE BAGEL MELTS

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

4 large corn tortillas

8 oz. fresh spinach

2 cups cooked shredded rotisserie chicken

1 (13-oz.) can artichoke hearts

1½ Tbsp. taco seasoning

¾ cup mayonnaise

1 Tbsp. olive oil

¾ cup sour cream

¼ cup corn

4 oz. cream cheese, softened

¼ cup black beans, drained

½ small onion, finely diced

½ cup chopped cherry tomatoes

1 clove garlic, minced

½ cup shredded Mexican-blend cheese, sour cream, salsa, cilantro, guacamole, jalapeno slices (optional)

1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard

DIRECTIONS:

18 mini-bagels, sliced in half

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Cut the tortillas into 8 circles using a large cookie cutter or top of a red wine or other wide-mouth glass. Place each tortilla circle into a muffin tin sprayed with cooking spray, pressing and folding the tortillas to fit, forming the “taco cup.”

3. Bake for 10 minutes.

4. While the tortillas cook, in a medium skillet, heat the shredded chicken, taco seasoning, corn, black beans and tomatoes with a splash of olive oil until heated through and sizzling.

5. Remove tortillas from oven and fill each cup with the chicken mixture. Top with cheese and return the cups in the muffin tin to the oven, baking for 5 more minutes or until cheese is melted and tortillas are lightly browned.

6. Top with your favorite taco toppings and enjoy!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

2. Chop the spinach coarsely. Drain the artichoke hearts. In a large bowl, beat together sour cream, mayonnaise, and cream cheese until smooth. Stir in the garlic, onion and mustard.

Gently stir in spinach, artichoke hearts and cheeses until blended.

3. Cut the bagels in half and lay them out on a baking sheet, cut side up. Spread each with two tablespoons of the dip mixture. Bake for 7-8 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly, then set the oven to broil just until cheese browns lightly.

4. Though best when served immediately, the dip may be made a day or two ahead of time.

GAME DAY PEANUT BUTTER DIP INGREDIENTS: 8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature 1 cup powdered sugar 1 cup peanut butter ½ cup milk 1 tsp. vanilla 1 (10.5-oz.) bag Reese’s Pieces apples, pretzels or crackers to dip DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until light and fluffy.

Mix in peanut butter until thoroughly blended. Slowly mix in vanilla and milk.

2. Spread peanut butter dip on the bottom of a glass pie plate. Have kids separate Reese’s according to color.

Place the brown Reese’s pieces in an “X” shape onto the dip, then add an outward curve on sides, filling with orange pieces to make a “basketball.”

3. Serve with pretzels, apples or crackers!

When

Donna Khan visited WinstonSalem in 2017, it wasn’t for fun.

A breast cancer diagnosis brought her for treatment to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, four hours to and from her home in western North Carolina.

However, amid medical uncertainty, Khan discovered comfort in her medical team and the nearby Family House, which offered touches of home and friendly faces.

“It was beautiful, more Southern hospitality spa than accommodations for sick people,” Kahn wrote. “It was airy and beautiful, with art, a piano, a cozy library I made my own, and a huge, granite-clad kitchen, where volunteer groups served up evening meals for grateful guests. Through it all, there was humor, grace, relaxation, peace.”

In its seventh year, the Family House has served as a “home away from home” for patients traveling to Forsyth County for medical treatment, or those facing dire health issues.

“When a health crisis takes over, a patient’s family often steps in to provide emotional and physical support. However, when they are required to travel hours away from home for life-saving treatments, that support is harder to find,” said Kathy Carr, Executive Director of the Family House. “That’s when the Family House and its many volunteers take over.”

The 45-room Family House is truly “more than just a place to stay.” Patients and their families coming to Winston-Salem for out-of-town medical care have an affordable, comfortable alternative to a hospital waiting room or an expensive hotel on which to lay their heads at night. The House staff provides friendship and support for adult patients and caregivers who have been referred by Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter.

Volunteers are truly the heart of the home, keeping the House stocked, cleaned and guests fed. “It has been an honor to serve the community [a meal] every third Thursday of the month with Winston-Salem State University’s Non-Traditional Adult Student Organization [NASO],” declared Patrick Lancaster, NASO President. “We enjoy every minute that we are there to interact and relax with the patients and families. The stories that we experience are amazing!”

Volunteers are always needed at the Family House, and there are a variety of ways to serve: from cooking and cleaning to providing musical talents or using organizational skills, there truly is something for everyone including the younger volunteers.

“You see immediate and tangible results by supporting the families who have no other place to turn to in times of a health crisis,” affirmed Barbara and Bud Goldsmith, House donors. “The relief that comes to these families in having a real bed to sleep in, a place to share and laugh, and, of course, cry with others, is one of those priceless gifts that can affect families forever.”

The Family House has hosted folks from 94 North Carolina counties and 41 states, and had over 27,000 patients since opening. For guests unable to afford the nominal overnight fee, a Family House assistance fund is available, thanks to donations and fundraising events like “Men Who Cook,” scheduled for March 17th.

Last year’s event was a huge success, netting more than $130,000.

“Donations or volunteer efforts shine hope through the darkness for families facing difficult treatment or recovery,” maintained Carr. “We are incredibly humbled that so many folks have supported us since opening, and as we increase the number of guests who need an affordable place to stay, we are always in need more incredible volunteers.”

Why It’s Okay to Go Through Ups and Downs in Your Workout Routine

We

are all human and imperfect. There is no way we can stay 100% motivated 365 days out of the year, complete with eating healthy every single day and working out with enthusiasm 5+ days a week. I’ve seen it many times, where people go through a lull in their workout routine and feel unmotivated. I’m here to tell you that it’s okay!

I’ve been working out since I was about 13 years old, when my family joined the Davie Family YMCA. I’m 30 years old now, so that’s 17 years of consistently working out. Yes, I love working out and don’t know where I would be without fitness in my life. However, I’ve gone through periods where the last thing I wanted to do is work out. These periods don’t have to be just 1 day…they can be several days or even weeks. When I see myself feeling unmotivated, I do a few things to get myself back on track. Here are my strategies: I REFLECT. The first step is to take a step back and reflect on why I am not wanting to work out. Am I feeling sick? Is my body run down? Do I need a mental break? Is my current workout boring me? All of these could be answered with a “Yes,” or just one of them. I write in my phone (or a journal) as to why I am feeling complacent in my fitness at the moment.

Next, I write why I love fitness so much. I know it sounds cheesy, but visually seeing why I work out written down does help me get some fire back. There is definite power in words. Writing the influence of fitness down reminds me and recharges me.

I REST. Almost every time I am in a workout lull, it’s because I need a break physically and emotionally.

I take a rest for a few days. Rest doesn’t mean doing absolutely nothing. Rest actually means active rest, like a long walk in my neighborhood, a hike or a yoga class. I’ve found that most of the time I just need a little break and this physical rest helps me jump back in. Our bodies need to be recharged, too!

I CHANGE THINGS UP. It’s not healthy to do the same workout routine every week and the same thing every day.

We need change! I look at my workouts and try to add a new workout each week that will give me energy. Try a new class at your YMCA! Or download a fun video from YouTube and give that a go. It’s energizing to try new things, and this includes your workouts. Plus, your bodies respond well to positive change.

I PHONE A FRIEND. I love working out with friends, and sometimes I forget that. I usually ask one of my good friends to join me in a workout, and that’s a great fix. It’s fun to chat and work out at the same time. Sweating together makes for a good relationship, too! If I’m lucky, sometimes my hubby will even join in on the fun and work out with me.

So, there you have it! It’s okay to go through ups and down in your motivation. Allow yourself grace time and know that we all experience workout plateaus. Jump back on the wagon by trying my strategies.

“Our chicken and waffles have always been a customer favorite, as well as our pizzas,” said Edwards. “My favorite is the Scooby Snack, which is topped with red sauce, pepperoni,

ground beef, bacon, peppers, olives and mushrooms and topped with fried spinach and crispy onions. We will also be adding some new menu items to our dinner and brunch menus in the next couple weeks. We like to keep things fresh.”

Menu items include Shrimp and Grits, Huevos Rancheros, Bananas Foster Waffles, Spanish Omelet and a Kid’s PB&J Waffle Sandwich, along with some of the favorites from the regular menu.

Lee Anne wants to make sure that no one has to wait too long for a great lunch—especially those who are looking for a more exciting break from work in the middle of the day than racing through a drive-thru. “Our lunch menu is limited to pizzas, salads and few sandwiches to allow us to serve lunch customers quickly,” she said.

Shamrock Pretzel Treats

Call me tacky, but anything festive for a holiday, I am all in. Decorations, themed menus and the like, count me in. Whether they’re going to your child’s school, your weekly church night or even to the office, these St. Patrick’s Shamrock Pretzel Treats are bound to make anyone feel like they have the luck of the Irish.

INGREDIENTS: 1 bag of candy of your choice — I recommend individually sized candies or a bar cut into pieces.

I used a Milky Way bar.

Green M&Ms Pretzels Green sprinkles DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Place pretzels onto a parchmentlined cookie sheet with space between each.

3. Place one bite-sized piece of candy on top of each pretzel. Bake until your candy is soft but not melted, about 5 minutes.

4. Remove cookie sheet from oven.

Work quickly to place 1 M&M into each pretzel quadrant or “hole,” making a Shamrock shape.

5. Add a green sprinkle to make the stem of the shamrock and allow to cool completely, about 15–20 minutes.
