picnics and fireworks! I will most likely be celebrating at the WS Dash baseball game as I have for the past several years. They always have the most amazing fireworks, and it has become a bit of a tradition for us now. Forsyth Mags lost a very special member of our team in late May. Kelly Groce, father of Forsyth Woman owner and publisher, eela ohnson, unexpectedly passed away. eela and her dad had a special bond and I always admired the closeness they shared. For many years, he made countless magazine deliveries, and on many delivery days we would all meet for lunch. elly or papaw as he was affectionately called) and I had a couple things in common, we were pretty picky eaters and were always the last ones to finish! I will cherish the times we all spent together, especially in the earlier days of the mags. e was the kindest, gentlest and most soft-spoken person I knew, and he will be missed greatly!

It’s a Moonstruck Summer at Kaleideum!

On

July 20th, 1969, something astonishing happened. For the first time in history, a human from the planet Earth stepped onto another world. Perhaps you watched the event live. Or you’ve simply heard it referenced: “One small step… one giant leap….” The three adventurers were Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins.

They flew Apollo 11 to the Moon and back. Armstrong and Aldrin landed and walked on the Moon, while Collins remained in lunar orbit.

The landing wasn’t an isolated event. It took thousands of people and billions of dollars to make it to the Moon. And it didn’t happen overnight. The Moon landing was the culmination of a space program—and space race—that began in the late 1950s. There were setbacks along the way, but America pushed forward. President Kennedy set the goal: “We choose to go to the Moon….” There was the Soviet Union’s Sputnik and the United States’ Explorer, the first satellites in orbit. Then humans ventured into space with the Mercury and Vostok programs. Yuri Gagarin, Alan Shepard, and John Glenn were the heroes of the time. Spaceflight became more complex with the Gemini and Voskhod spacecraft.

Missions were longer, and we learned how to rendezvous and “walk” in space.

Then came Apollo and Soyuz. Apollo brought with it the huge Saturn V rocket, and, with Apollo, we made it to the Moon and back. Soyuz stayed in orbit around the Earth, but, today, it is the craft used to travel to and from the International Space Station.

July 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the historic first trip to the Moon.

To celebrate, Kaleideum is hosting Moonstruck Summer, featuring Moonrelated activities at both locations on an almost-daily basis. The celebration began on Memorial Day and will continue through Labor Day. From puppets and plays to crafts and science demonstrations, there’s something for nearly everyone. The highlight of the summer will be the Moon Rocks Party on Saturday, July 20th (the actual 50th anniversary of the walk on the Moon) from 6-10 p.m. The theme for the event is “Party Like It’s 1969,” and Museum staff hope to re-create the feel of the parties that families and friends held 50 years ago to watch the “giant leap for mankind” as it happened. Party guests can: • Count down to the launch of a Saturn V model rocket.

• Watch the Apollo 11 documentary, which recently screened in theaters nationwide.

• Listen to the real-time audio feed as Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the Moon.

• Taste something out of this world in a performance of Peppercorn Theatre’s new play, Stoo’s Famous Martian-American Gumbo.

• Make a tie-dyed bandana.

• Dance to tunes by Carolina Crossing, including hits from the 60s.

• Sample Tang and moon pies with by Lowes Foods Reynolda Road.

• View the stars with the Forsyth Astronomical Society (weather permitting).

• Rock out to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon in a planetarium laser show.

There will also be door prizes, science demonstrations, and planetarium shows. Dinner can be purchased from Foothills Brewery and ice cream treats from the Ice Queen. Cash bars by Foothills (beer & wine) and Mayberry Spirits Distillery (mixed drinks & nonalcoholic specialty drinks) will also be available. Retro- attire is encouraged!

Advance tickets may be purchased online at kaleideum.org: $10 for adults and $5 for youth, ages 1-19. (Children under 11 months are free.) Tickets will also be available at the door: $12 for adults, $6 for children, and $3 for EBT cardholders, as part of the Museums for All initiative. Members and non-members must purchase tickets.

HACKS to Make Flying with

Kids Less Stressful

is the time for vacations and relaxing, but if you’ve ever been on vacation with children, you know that relaxing isn’t always the first word that comes to mind. Especially when flying with children, your anxiety can be on high alert and all you want to do is just get there and have the travel portion of the trip be over as quickly and as painlessly as possible. While there is always a chance of traveling mishaps that will throw a wrench into best-laid plans, having good plans for flying with children will make a world of difference, both in your stress levels and the children’s enjoyment levels.

Snack Bags Nobody likes to be hungry, especially children. Make sure to pack enough food for your travel time, and then a little extra, just in case of delayed flights. You want to choose foods that travel well, but are healthful enough aka not candy) to avoid a sugar rush at 1 , feet above the ground. Good options are carrot sticks, pretzels, goldfish, granola bars, etc. When you pack your carry-on bags, these should be placed somewhere easily accessible.

Lollipops/Gum Yes, this goes against the sugar-rush advice given above however, there is a specific purpose for this. When you travel in an airplane, your ears adjust to the pressure of the height, but children can often have a hard time with this. Allowing them to have a lollipop or chewing gum something that keeps their jaws moving) during take-off and landing can prevent pain in their ears.

Travel Binder Pick up a smaller ½” 1” width) -ring binder and fill it with activity sheets placed into plastic sleeves. Depending on the ages of your children, you can have mazes, crosswords, tracing letters for smaller children, even math and reading comprehension worksheets. Try to find sheets that cater to your children’s interests Pinterest is a great resource for free worksheets that have a plethora of themes, such as Minecraft, Pokemon, and Barbie. To keep the sheets clean, include a pack of dry erase markers, and your kids can fill them out on the plastic sheeting, so they are reusable.

Window Decals Who doesn’t love to decorate? Pick up a sheet or two of window-cling decals and let your kids decorate their window wall throughout the flight. These are significantly better than stickers, as they peel right up without leaving any marks. Since they peel up easily, they can also be moved around during the flight for ongoing fun.

Books Again, this is dependent on the age of the child but bringing books is a fantastic way to keep reading-age children occupied during travel. Especially if you are traveling for an extended distance, try to bring books that you don’t mind getting rid of as they are read--to free up space. There are Little Free Libraries in many locations, which are a great way to get rid of books when you get to a destination and pick up new books for the ride back. If you go to their website, you can even check in advance to find out where libraries are that are near where you’ll be traveling.

Electronic Devises Many parents prefer not to bring children’s electronic devices on family vacations, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures. Movies and T Shows can be downloaded in advance, as well as age- appropriate games. It is very important to make sure to bring chargers and headphones you’ll be in an enclosed space with a lot of people who don’t all want to listen to Paw Patrol for several hours in the air!

In Honor and Celebration of Dr. James Gibbs’ Retirement “Be nice and call people by their name.” It

sounds simple enough, but it’s the motto to which Dr. ames Gibbs says he has lived by every day of his years since starting the former Salem Gastroenterology Associates now known as Gastroenterology Associates of the Piedmont or “GAP”).

“If you find something you like, it doesn’t feel like work.” For Dr. Gibbs, his job satisfaction genuinely comes from helping people. e relays that his proudest moments come from the people who express what a difference he has made in their lives.

The History ames Gibbs grew up in eidsville, North Carolina. It was here that he became friends with Mary Alice in the 1st grade, who is now his wife of years. They have three children and six grandchildren scattered across the Eastern nited States.

Dr. Gibbs’ decision to become a doctor was unexpected. e was enrolled to attend business school, but a mentor came into his life that helped him to find his true passion for helping people.

Dr. Gibbs remembers the nervousness of approaching his father, a businessman himself, about the decision.

At that time in 1 , the average cost of a college semester was , a startling contrast to the costs encountered today! A young ames Gibbs entered into medical school that fall with his father’s blessing. e completed his undergraduate degree at Davidson College, medical school and training at the Medical College of irginia, spent two years in an Alabama army hospital, then completed additional training at the niversity of North Carolina at Chapel ill. During that time, his passion and inspiration for focusing on gastroenterology came from the mentors he met along the way, who allowed him to be involved in research

studies and the development of the gastroenterology department at Chapel ill. e moved to Winston-Salem in 1 to establish himself in a town close to his family in eidsville.

The Practice It was in Winston-Salem that Dr. Gibbs and Dr. Michael ubin took a leap and started Salem Gastroenterology Associates in 1 . The practice soon began to grow, and what is now “GAP” currently hosts 1 physicians, with two more joining this summer. According to Dr. Gibbs, “The thing that can make life so much better is the people you’re surrounded by.” It’s this reason that even through major changes in healthcare and the merger of two competitors, the primary goal has remained to grow a group of physicians who understand the importance of preserving the commitment to patient care.

A New Adventure After years of treating patients in the practice he grew from the ground up, Dr. Gibbs has made the decision to retire. He plans to stay busy reading books, spending time with family, volunteering with medical organizations, and finding new hobbies. Even with new adventures on the horizon, his main focus is still on getting his patients the best care possible.

“I have patients who I’ve treated three generations of their family. I’m glad to know that I can fully trust their care to our providers.” e also expresses, “Your biggest fear is that when you retire, your practice won’t sustain itself. I’m glad to know that will not be happening in this case.”

Dr. Gibbs wishes to thank every patient and staff member who has made his career possible over the years.

What to Look for in a Daycare and What Questions to Ask

a daycare can be one of the most difficult decisions a new parent has to make. This task can feel incredibly daunting, especially for first-time parents. Since our children often spend upwards of - hours a week with their child care providers, it’s important to feel comfortable with the level of care they are receiving. While we all agree it’s important to pick the right daycare for your family, not everybody knows exactly how to go about doing that. If you are pregnant, it’s a good idea to start looking at daycares during your second or third trimester; when you find the right daycare for your family, you can put your name down for the month you want to start and your space will be held. nfortunately, good daycares can fill up fast, especially if there is an influx of babies that year, and waiting lists can be long if you aren’t quick.

The first step in finding daycare options to choose from is generally to activate the word-of-mouth super-power that moms have. If a mother at your place of employment has had an experience, good or bad, they will absolutely tell you about it. Plant the seeds at work and within your friend groups that you are starting to think about daycares for your little one-to-be, and the suggestions will start coming in. Not only will the suggestions flow in, the recommendations for which centers to steer away from will be offered up as well.

Before you register your child for any particular center, it’s important to do your research and schedule a tour. When you come up with a list of facilities you want to tour, it’s helpful to write down a “pros and cons” list for each center. Make sure to focus on what is most important to you, and keep your price point in mind to avoid any unpleasant disappointments later in the process. Some centers are smaller and more like an intimate family, some are larger, and some are more focused on academics. You will know which one feels right for you, based on your parenting style and personality.

Make sure to read online reviews and check if there are any license violations before getting your heart set on any particular facility. For practical purposes it’s also important to check what your commute will be at each facility that could be a deciding factor when choosing between two centers.

When you schedule your tour, make sure that all parenting parties are able to make it to the meeting if possible this is an important decision that everybody should be on board for. To prepare for the tour, it is highly recommended to write down a list of questions to ask while you are there. What type of discipline is used, what are the parental expectations for volunteering monetary contributions fundraising, is food provided, etc. Ask for a daily schedule example for whatever age you are looking for likely, the infant room. Do they feed on cue or on a schedule? What are the ratios between teachers and children?

When you are at the school, pay close attention to the interactions between the teachers and the children. Especially in an infant room, seeing teachers on the floor playing with kids is a fantastic sign this shows dedication and nurturing. Do the kids seem happy?

Even if you are only looking at enrolling your child for the infant room, ask to see the other rooms during your tour. You don’t want to have to go through this process again in another year or two, so it’s a good idea to find a daycare that your children can grow up in, if possible. They are absolutely not a replacement for you, but they will be part of the village helping to grow your child into a wonderful human being, so use these tips to find the perfect fit for your family.

year, Piedmont Ear Nose & Throat Associates is celebrating 20 years of serving the Piedmont Triad.

On July 1st, 1999, Salem ENT Associates and Forsyth Head & Neck joined together to form Piedmont Ear Nose & Throat Associates, or PENTA. PENTA focuses on providing the highest quality of ENT care in the region. Founded by Drs. William S. Fisher, Ronald B. Shealy, Robert M. Alsup, Kenneth S. Maxwell, and Stephen B. Potts, “PENTA remains a privately owned, physician-led ENT surgical practice. Our providers and staff are dedicated to delivering the best patient care possible through quality, teamwork, integrity, knowledge, and passion,” said Dr. Potts.

To accommodate a growing community need, PENTA now includes offices in Kernersville, Clemmons, and Mt. Airy. The practice has grown over the past 20 years to include 12 physicians and one Physician Assistant. “With our growth as a practice in staff and services, we expanded into a larger building and added clinical research, along with the PENTA Facial Plastic Surgery Center, which also includes aesthetics. Additional services include general ENT, audiological testing, hearing aids, allergy, clinical research, facial plastics, cosmetic injectables, and aesthetic services. “We added our own ambulatory surgical center in February of 2012, which has added to our patients’ convenience,” Dr. Kenneth S. Maxwell commented. Over the past two decades, there have been improvements in ENT care, and PENTA has incorporated leading technology to better serve patients.

Patients frequently comment that it is nice to visit our office, because the staff is friendly, helpful, kind, knowledgeable, and compassionate,” stated Dr. Potts. Audrey Smith knows as a patient, and as the mother of patients, the quality care that PENTA gives. “Three of my four children have had multiple sets of ear tubes and two tonsillectomies. I, myself have also had a tonsillectomy. We all received excellent patient care at PENTA. Our experience was wonderful and I would recommend the team at PENTA to anyone.

We will always be so grateful for the care and compassion we received,” reflected Audrey.

Beyond offering services and treatments for patients, the physicians at PENTA encourage their patients to be proactive in their health.

“Patient education and prevention are important to PENTA. For example, we encourage everyone to get a baseline hearing test at age 50. This allows providers to compare results, should a patient come in with hearing loss later in life,” Dr. Maxwell remarked.

uly th, Chickfil-A’s across America will celebrate “Cow Appreciation Day.” In anticipation of this 1 -year tradition, I had the opportunity to sit down with the Chick-fil-A Clemmons cow representative and learn more about this day, and what it means to represent the Chickfil-A brand.

DENISE Thank you so much for meeting with me today!

COW No problem; I am happy to talk about anything that has to do with cow appreciation!

DENISE Before we get started, what name do you go by?

COW Actually, I don’t have one. The human tendency to name their children was never a trend that caught on in the bovine community. “Cow” will do just fine.”

DENISE Fair enough. Cow, how long have you been affiliated with Chick-fil-A? COW Let’s see We started supporting Chick-fil-A in 1 . So it’s been a 2 -year partnership at this point.

DENISE Wow, that’s a long time to encourage people to eat chicken!

COW Yes, we enjoy every minute of it.

DENISE You say, “We.” ow many Chick-fil-A cows are there?

COW You know, it’s udderly impossible to say. There are a lot of us, and we have a variety of interests. At the end of the day, though, we’re all olstein cows who simply want to encourage humans to “Eat mor chikin.”

DENISE I understand. It’s clear you are up for the job.

COW Well, after 2 years, it’s more like a mission.

DENISE Why is this mission important to you?

COW Do you really need me to explain why it’s more beneficial to cows if humans eat chicken?

DENISE I see your point. Let’s move on . Let’s talk about Cow Appreciation Day. COW That’s our favorite day of the year! The head bulls at the Chick-fil-A headquarters started Cow Appreciation Day in 2 . It’s really no cowincidence that the event was hugely popular from the start.

COW umans are encouraged to embrace their innercows. They come dressed up as a cow between opening and PM on Cow Appreciation Day, and Chick-fil-A gives them a free entrée.

COW You know, they herd in so fast, sometimes, it’s hard to keep count. Last year, I think close to two million cow-wannabes showed up and got free chicken.

DENISE That’s a lot of chicken! When is Cow Appreciation Day this year?

COW We celebrate on Tuesday, uly th! It’s an unbelievabull day.

DENISE So what kind of costumes do people come in?

COW You know, you humans can be so creative. While some people may wear some cow ears and call themselves a cow, I’ve seen other humans really embrace the spirit of the cow. Either way whether the costumes are simple or elaborate, it’s a mooving experience to see.

COW I’m told we have a website. ooves are a little hard to type with, so I haven’t spent much time on the cowputer to see.

COW That’s what I said.

COW Absolutely. It’s an event that we look forward to celebrating. It’s a chance for us to interact with humans, and that’s always something fun. To be honest, the night before Cow Appreciation Day, I can barely sleep when I hit the hay! It’s just so exciting!

could be more eyeopening than learning that 75% of all storebought honey contains artificial sweeteners, such as rice, wheat, and sugar-beet syrups? Despite the high-dollar price, the missing ingredient is pollen!

By removing the essential microscopic particles, manufacturers can not only conceal the identity of the source of the honey but pass government purity tests. New technology, termed “Nuclear Magnetic Resonance” (NMR), can determine the quality by recognizing syrups that come from plants. Surprisingly the United States does not have a standard for identifying purity. In 2011, a lab analysis through an American university discovered that honey from big box stores, drugstores, fast-food chains and elsewhere contained dangerous antibiotics, artificial sweeteners, and large quantities of metals in their brands.

Considering the production of seven million pounds of honey produced annually, how do you know which brands are worth the price?

The Do’s and Don’ts of Buying Honey • Do not trust a label which states, “100% Honey” or “U.S. Grade A.” • Be wary of labels that list multiple countries of origin, and include the United States.

• Look for raw and especially locally made honey at small markets, some specialty food stores, and farmer’s markets.

• Contact your local beekeeper’s association. The Forsyth County website, https://fcba.wildapricot.org/, includes a tab titled, “Local Honey for Sale.”

• Ask family and friends where they purchase their “raw” honey.

Buying from a reputable source is critical. The extraction and canning process begins in late June; ask to have your name added to a “wait” list. The wait may be long, but worth it!

Amazing Facts about the Honeybee Did you know one honeybee can produce one tablespoon of honey in its lifetime? Please do not swat the honeybee, it is either on a foraging mission to gather nectar, possessing a high water content of between 60% and 80%, or returning to the hive. Through the transformation process to honey, the bees will flap their wings to remove the moisture. Statistics state that it takes approximately 680 honeybees to fly 32,500 miles to collect nectar from over a million flowers. Once

capped, the honey will fill roughly one nine-ounce jar.

Additionally, if you have ever wondered about the shape of the honeycomb, a hexagon offers the most efficient pattern to ensure the cells do not waste space. Despite its delicate structure, the comb holds a tremendous amount of weight.

What is Raw Honey?

To achieve perfection, honey does not require pasteurization to remove the nutrients—such as vitamins and antibacterial and antioxidant properties—which keep the body’s immune system healthy. In place of this type of production, there is a more straightforward process. When beekeepers remove frames directly from the hive, the frames go through a procedure of extraction using centrifugal force. After straining it to remove wax and other particles, the honey is in its perfect state and ready for canning.

Children of Divorce: Helping Kids When Their Parents are Apart

In

the United States, half of all marriages end in divorce.

Most first-time divorces occur when couples are in their 30s. This means that a lot of children are caught in the crossfire when their parents divorce. That is, in fact, why I chose the title, Caught in the Crossfire: Children of Divorce, for the book I wrote in 1986. In 1992, the divorce rate was still 50% and the book was retitled, Children of Divorce: Helping Kids When Their Parents are Apart, and given a new cover. Today, the divorce rate is still 50% and the book is still in print, presumably because so many children are still being impacted by the divorce of their parents.

When I began to explore the topic of children and divorce, I decided to ask the experts—the kids themselves—how they had been affected by their parents’ divorce. I learned a lot from viewing parental breakup through their eyes: “What upsets me most about my parents’ divorce is the hurt that you get down deep.” ~ Candace, age 8 “I think that divorce is terrible and that parents shouldn’t be able to do it.” ~ Ben, age 10 “I wish my mother would understand that it’s hard on us kids and not just her.” ~ Anna, age 17 “I think that divorce is the most emotionally painful situation a child can go through. I will never put my kids through a divorce if I can help it.” ~ Carol, teenager, age unknown

When parents are divorcing, they are in the midst of their own crisis, which makes it harder for them to parent their children who are in crisis, too. So I wrote Children of Divorce, not for divorcing parents, but for those outside the family who want to reach out to children whose parents are divorcing: neighbors, teachers, coaches, scout leaders, Sunday school teachers, nannies, etc. My goal was to help these helpers understand what kids go through when parents divorce. This varies by age, and there are separate chapters for babies and toddlers, preschoolers, five-to-eight-year-olds, preteens, and teens. The remaining chapters deal with children’s academic, spiritual, and relationship struggles, and what adults outside the family can do to help.

The book was a labor of love from start to finish. I felt the pain of both the parents and the kids, and sometimes their stories brought tears to my eyes while I sat at my writing desk. If there was one thing I was grateful for, and entirely certain of, it was that my child would never be one of those kids, the children of divorce I was writing about.

How wrong I was.

Just a few years later, incredibly, ironically, the unthinkable happened. Divorce blindsided me; I never saw it coming. In its wake, I was emotionally devastated and inconsolable. Life as I knew it was going through a shredder, and I had a precious little boy to take care of, a child who was now one of those kids. Both my son and I needed time to grieve and regain our balance. One good thing about having written a book about children and divorce was that I knew some of the “first aid” that needed to be administered. I remembered that…

• Children need assurance that divorce is not their fault. It is important to tell them, “Divorce is a grownup problem and only grownups can cause it.”

• Children need to know that they still are, and will always be, dearly loved by both parents.

• After divorce, to spare children additional stress, the rule of thumb is: keep as much as possible the same for as long as possible.

I wrote Children of Divorce with great empathy and a sincere desire to help kids weather the storm of parental divorce. But I wrote it, of course, from the perspective of a journalist, not a mom who had held the hand of a child experiencing the breakup of his or her family. Now, years later, people sometimes ask me if I would write a different book today, in hindsight. The answer, of course, is “yes.” Will I ever write that book?

Probably not. My heart tells me that it’s best to view this now very personal topic only in the rearview mirror of my life.

that long ago, slate boards, highlighters, and classroom libraries were tools promoting educational progress, while lessons in phonics, cursive, and spelling comprised the foundation for an effective language program. Over the decades, new teaching methods, which experimented in pedagogy, instituted programs that fostered various levels of progress, but endured setbacks. Educational professionals wondered, “Couldn’t we balance the old proven standards while implementing new ideas?”

One debate continues between policymakers and educators, parents and students: how far should technology impact teaching styles, curriculum, and students? With the arrival of Common Core, one mandate prompted students to become technologically skilled.

Each student received a laptop, which encouraged self-pace personalized lessons. Preparing young adults for the 21st-century workplace, technology in schools offers both sides of the coin, positives as well as drawbacks.

Digital “Natives” Growing up in a digital world defined how students learned, maintained friendships, and spent their leisure time. Every heart’s desire, from filling a glass of water, turning on the oven, washing and drying clothes, driving, and finding the shortest means of traveling between two destinations required one action—applying one finger to a touch-screen or swiping it in a certain direction. The answer connected students with the tools necessary to survive in the future.

Surprisingly, teachers, who used technology on a minimal basis within their

classrooms, discovered the students were both engaged and productive. Hands-on activities, labs, small groups, and creative projects fostered a positive impact on the growth and development of the students.

Furthermore, classmates engaged in conversations by bandying about ideas, practicing critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills while broadening friendships. Students who balanced technology with interaction experienced positive feelings about attending school.

The Smartboard Promotes Differing Learning Styles Visitors to public and private schools will find today’s classrooms brimming with technology. The interactive Smartboard replaces the overhead projector and the chalkboard. The multi-functional whiteboard includes a touchscreen option for students to view diagrams, charts, pictures, and videos. By enhancing a student’s learning experiences, the Smartboard helps all types of learning styles. The Nature of Playing has Changed Keyboarding practice and lessons help children to prepare for a technological future; yet, abandoning paper and a writing tool comes with repercussions.

The overuse of touchscreen applications prevents the finger muscles from developing sufficiently, impacting hand strength and the dexterity needed to hold a pencil or pen correctly. Children need a firm control of the fine muscles at the fingers to control, grip, and move a writing utensil. While children can

easily maneuver through screens of an iPad at a tender age, they also require muscle-building opportunities with building blocks and Legos, as well as interacting with toys that swing and force a child to engage in climbing. Returning to traditional forms of playing while utilizing art supplies and pencils will keep preschool children, especially, from experiencing delays in using a utensil and help them learn to write without associating pain and cramping with the act of writing.

What is Blended Learning?

Technology is a powerful tool for tailoring education to each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses, interests, and optimal pace for learning. Through digital devices and software, students strive toward completing set goals. Blended learning combines traditional teacherto-student lessons, both small-group and class instruction, with technology.

Students receive blocks of time which rotate between online activities and inperson stations. The goal of the “flex” schedule still enables children to receive individualized instruction while offering opportunities for student interactions, group work, and problem-solving.

Flexibility and Balance Technology is a tool that will only expand farther in our daily lives. While there are many positive aspects to a technological educational platform, parents can better control their child’s sedentary activities by suggesting an alternative to screen-time.

It is challenging to enforce powering down or silencing cellular devices for a digital “native”; however, balance is a necessity.

As an organization that is 25-years strong, WomanCare has been a part of the Novant Healthcare system for the last ten years. When it comes to choosing a healthcare provider, few choices are as deeply personal as a woman’s decision for an OB/GYN partnership. Dr. Haley Landwehr shared some insight into what makes Novant Health WomanCare such a great choice.

“The Novant Health WomanCare experience brings a host of opportunities for today’s woman. Childcare Services For patients who are moms of young children, Novant Health WomanCare offers complimentary childcare for children aged six weeks and up. “Judy is our childcare provider,” said Dr. Landwehr, “and she is amazing. Our childcare service is available at our Winston-Salem location, Monday through Friday from 8 AM – 1 PM. It’s a great benefit to moms who need childcare, but may not be able to coordinate it easily, so that they can get to their appointment. Judy is a natural with children and it’s safe, secure, and a valuable resource for our patients.”

Ultrasound “We also have three ultrasound suites. The ultrasound rooms of Novant Health WomanCare all feature large, wall-mounted televisions, so patients can watch if they want to,” said Dr. Landwehr. “The suites are large enough to accommodate several family members, and, of course, ultrasound technology is amazing and gives us invaluable information. We offer genetic screening ultrasounds and anatomy ultrasounds for all our OB patients.

“But ultrasounds aren’t exclusively for those in obstetric care,” explained Dr. Landwehr. “We also use ultrasound technology for our GYN patients, too, in order to look at the uterine cavity. This can help identify uterine issues such as fibroids or polyps as well as ovarian cysts or masses.”

Novant Health WomanCare also offers new parents and soon-to-be parents a fun way to share pictures, maybe even a gender-reveal photo, with the Photo Wall Station. A great backdrop with an assortment of pink and blue props makes a trip to the doctor a little more fun! Plus—every new baby gets their own Novant Health WomanCare purple onesie! “We love to celebrate with families on the arrival of their new babies,” exclaimed Dr. Landwehr.

In-house Lab “Gone are the days when we have to send our patients to another facility for lab work,” said Dr. Landwehr. “We have partnered with Lab Corp so that our patients can have their tests done in our office, rather than making a trip to another location. This is a great value-added service that we offer.”

Nutrition Novant Health WomanCare is all about the total care of women, including their nutritional health. “We have an amazing, registered dietitian on staff,” said Dr. Landwehr. “She works with our pregnant patients who may be at risk for gestational diabetes, but also helps our other patients with nutrition for weight loss, managing cholesterol through diet, diabetes care, eating disorders, and more.”

“The nutrition services we offer through Novant Health WomanCare are very often covered by health insurance, so if our patients are interested in learning more, we are happy to schedule appointments to help determine what nutrition plans are the best solution for each person’s individual needs. Our dietitian is also happy to schedule appointments with patients who do not get their OBGYN care through WomanCare.”

Minor Surgeries and Procedures “No one likes to go to the hospital,” affirmed Dr. Landwehr. “It’s time-consuming, expensive, and stressful.

Thankfully, there are some minor surgeries and procedures that we can handle in-house now, thanks to our partnership with anesthesiologists from Piedmont Triad Anesthesia.

“We offer a variety of procedures in our Winston-Salem office each Thursday, including hysteroscopy, ablation, removal of uterine polyps and other minor procedures. A full list of the procedures we do is on our website,” continued Dr. Landwehr. “It’s been a wonderful addition to our list of services. It enables our patients to get in and out far more quickly than they would in a hospital, plus there’s no operating room bill with which to contend.”

Other Services In addition to being a unique approach to women’s health care, Novant Health WomanCare offers adolescent care for young women.

“This is a great service to get young girls acclimated to regular gynecological visits and reproductive health care. Also, when we establish these relationships early, we can help young women understand their bodies and be there when questions or concerns arise. We are partnered with Twin City Pediatrics; however, we see adolescent girls no matter who their primary pediatrician may be.”

The Impact of the Universe

It

is instinctual to look skyward toward the heavens for answers. For thousands of years, humans have studied cloud formations, wind, rainfall, temperature, the cycle and influences of the moon, the constellations, and planetary alignments. And, during moments of peculiar quietness and impending dread, townships and villages, families and individuals prayed, sang, and pleaded for God’s mercy.

We can thank Polish astronomer Nicolai Copernicus, who discovered that the Sun, not the Earth, was at the center of our universe, while the planets revolved around it in an elliptical path. Since 1508, humans have a grander scientific understanding of how the universe impacts every aspect of our world and life.

Location, Location, Location!

For all we know, Earth is the only planet in the universe with life. Circling the sun in orbit and held in this orbit by gravitational pull, the blue planet’s balance of life and cycling sustainability are dependent on its ideal distance from the Sun—93 million miles. Through the emittance of energy, the Sun stirs our atmosphere, generates weather patterns, warms our surface and oceans, and gives strength for growing plants to make food and oxygen. Some people can also harness heat and light to generate electricity or erect a structure on a smaller scale, such as a greenhouse.

Our Natural Satellite Humans find relaxation among the grains of sand and the rhythmic ebb and flow coming from the tides. The beachgoer may not realize the tides are crucial to our planet. The daily waxing to waning cycles impact our oceans and seas. The moon pulls through a gravitational force, causing high tides or tidal forces. The result is a bulge, which triggers a collection of water and a release, leading to low tide.

Similarly, the gravitational pull from the moon also impacts water flow and weight inside plants. Sap movement is vigorous during the waxing stage, in which the moon grows fuller, and movement slows as the moon wanes to a thin crescent. Water weight can vary up to 10 percent in the one week leading towards a full moon. The action of cutting, harvesting, and pruning foliage or plants follows a similar pattern. The term “lunar burn” describes the effect of cutting a limb full of new developing buds. The consequence is that the increased levels of sap will engorge the small channels, potentially rupturing them, and destroying future growth. To take advantage of our

satellite, timing is essential to foster healthy seedlings, or promote the growth of canes or shoots and fuller branches.

Electromagnetic Spectrum The definition of light is what the eyes can see that surrounds the body. If we extend beyond the sliver we see to the range of brightness that actually exists, the term broadens to the electromagnetic spectrum. Most of the light in the universe is invisible. For instance, water sprayed in light results in a prism of rainbow colors, comprising short wavelengths of light.

Astronomers use the electromagnetic spectrum to peer inside and study dense clouds, dimming stars, the temperature of planets, and the dust found in the Milky Way. The Hubble and Spitzer telescopes show infrared energy at a distance of 300 light-years away. We necessarily need an instrument to look into the heavens, where wavelengths appear as colors, which can reveal energy, viability, and life.

Researchers understand that moonlight, while similar to sunlight, reflects and shifts towards infrared. The effect is a less intense version of the Sun; however, it adds nutrition, which explains the growth in healthy plants and the boost of development in seedlings. Studies prove moonlight has a healing component for plants that promotes regeneration and growth, a full recovery due to the potential for absorbing water content one week before the full moon.

Look up toward the heavens and study the forces at work either with the naked eye, or using a tool such as a telescope! The moon is one aspect of celestial study. Delving into the stars, planets, and beyond will help you understand the powerful forces aiding our world.

Your Stress-free Guide to Preparing for Middle School

are many educational milestones in a child’s life. These moments can include starting and graduating from preschool, elementary, middle, and high schools. All of the transitions from one to another can be hard for a child, especially the transition from elementary to middle school. For example, a student is going from having one teacher all day to having four to six teachers with four to six classes daily. Plus, there are now lockers, more work, and additional responsibilities.

Yet, the transition from elementary to middle school doesn’t have to stress out the student and their parent. Continue reading for some tips to help make the switch as easy as possible.

ROUTINE – One of the biggest changes is in routine. As mentioned above, a child is transitioning between multiple classrooms, remembering a locker combination, and getting the needed materials at different times of the day from that locker. Other changes could be in the length of a class. Maybe in elementary school, subjects were taught for only 45 minutes. In middle school, some can be 60 minutes or up to 90 minutes with a block schedule.

1. Talk about the upcoming changes before your child’s middle school orientation or first day of school. Start at the end of elementary school and prepare them during the summer. For some students, this change is nothing. For others, it can be overwhelming. Let your child know what to expect and answer any of their questions.

2. Go over their class schedule early and review it often. Make sure your student has copies of their schedule in easy, accessible places, such as their agenda or locker.

3. Tour the school and go through your child’s schedule, just like a normal day of school.

Sometimes during orientation, the school will also have students run through their schedules.

However, it is always good to take a tour as many times as possible. Open house is a great night to do this. In addition, take time to find the cafeteria, gym, library, office, and restrooms.

4. Organize and label school materials. There isn’t much time for locker breaks and between classes. Students have to quickly grab their stuff for their next classes. Organization is key for a middle schooler. One trick to try is color-coding each subject. Also, you can keep everything in one place for all the classes. Let your child be a part of this process and help them choose what works best for them. Go from the teachers’ supply lists, as well, for organizational guidance. Lastly, reorganize whenever you need to and make sure to clean out lockers, backpacks, folders, and binders as often as possible.

5. Changes in routine also might mean changes in the routine at home.

Middle school usually starts and ends earlier than elementary school, meaning a child’s morning might start earlier, too. To avoid stress, adjust bedtimes and prepare school materials at night. Keep backpacks, lunch boxes, etc. by the door. As for an earlier school release, you may find that there is more time in the afternoons. Create a schedule with your child’s input for the extra time. However, keep in mind that there may be extra homework, more obligations, and more extracurricular activities. Do the same for the evening time.

6. Teach your child time management. Create schedules and block out the time when your child has an activity, dinner time, homework time, etc. In addition, work with them to make the most of their time. Even five minutes here and there can add up and be a timesaver.

Other tips to remember are to keep the lines of communication open with your child and your child’s teacher, and to be aware of who they are friends with, and who might be bullies. Middle school is tough, especially the sixth grade.

It takes time to adjust to the new routines. The good news is that you and your student aren’t alone. It is normal to be a little nervous. It is normal for them to be lost at first. However, let them know you are there for them, just as are their teachers and school administrators.

Why Major in

As

a college graduate who studied English as her major, I would often get asked if I wanted to be an English teacher post-graduation. I would always respond, “Oh nooo! I want to write! I’m taking up English to develop my craft.” It’s almost as if most people believe that teaching is the only thing to do with an English degree. It is truly a popular major to pursue, but certainly not the only one. A plethora of career options falls under the umbrella of an English degree, as well as skills and qualities we acquire while studying English.

CAREERS WITH AN ENGLISH DEGREE Journalism. With a bachelor’s degree in English, you can pursue a growing career in journalism, whether you are writing articles in print or reporting them live on the local news. While studying English—perhaps with journalism as a minor or concentration—aspiring journalists learn the art of research, citing sources, and communicating with others to produce a grabbing headline. Writing several essays within two months will help fortify writing skills, while oral presentations train their public speaking.

Writing. Writing jobs are everywhere now! There are sectors of employment that gladly accept writers of many kinds. Technical writers are needed to compose “how-to” or “step-by-step” instructions. They are also important for writing rules and procedures for non-profits or contracts.

Content writers are appreciated for writing website content on a company site. Bloggers and other freelance writers who may work for a local newspaper or magazine also have skills amplified with an English degree. And, of course, you can always aspire to be a bestselling, Pulitzer-prize-winning author by practicing your creative writing! You can see about birthing your storytelling skills, either by taking a creative writing course or by using your imagination in your own time.

Publishing business. An English degree, likely only a bachelor’s, will prepare you for the publishing world. Within this business, you can seek careers in editing, proofreading, publishing, and even ghostwriting. While taking English courses, there will be “peer-review” days where students exchange rough drafts of their essays and read their fellow students’ work. Peer-review includes editing the other

students’ work, marking up their drafts with revisions, and providing feedback to help make their drafts better. This is very similar to proofreading and editing a professional writer’s work. Can this be nerve-racking during school?

Yes! But it is excellent practice if anyone wants a career in publishing. It also builds crocodile skin for future writers before they make their work public!

Marketing and Sales. Studying English builds vocabulary, rhetorical skills, strong communication and confidence speaking and writing—therefore preparing one for a career in sales and marketing, where those strengths are exalted.

This is where copywriting comes in. Copywriters write advertising and promotional content. They are responsible for the writing on billboards, websites, brochures, and catalogs. They are basically “print salespeople!” But, of course, successful copywriting requires intense focus on the subject at hand. So, writing essays on a specific topic or idea helps to strengthen this needed skill for any marketing career.

Public Relations. This is where communication plays a key role. Studying English helps build the confidence that is needed to communicate effectively with the public. Public relations also requires strong marketing skills that come with being an English student, because you must know how to promote and advertise the company or organization you are representing.

WHAT DO WE LEARN WHILE STUDYING ENGLISH? The strengths we gain being under the English major not only prepare us for our career, but for life. Through reading, speaking, and copious writing assignments, we gain strong communication skills. Reading assignments and open-class discussions mature our critical-thinking skills and decisionmaking. Our writing and grammar skills sharpen, as those are heavily needed in the workplace. We learn to employ abstract thinking, so we can make sense out of symbols and metaphors used in cryptic poetry and classic literature. And lastly, we learn the beauty of research in which we learn how to use the resources at hand to seek out new information, not only in academia, but also to add quality to our daily life.

English is a general subject with specific career choices!

Memorial Day weekend, WinstonSalem was once again the center of the biking universe. Professional cyclists from around the world converged in Winston-Salem for the 7th-annual WinstonSalem Cycling Classic Race, one of the country’s most prestigious professional cycling events. The Classic has become an anticipated annual tradition in Winston-Salem, drawing thousands of fans to the festivities downtown and through the neighborhoods of Winston-Salem. There are Criterium races on Saturday, road races on Monday, and numerous family-friendly activities throughout the weekend, such as the Walk and Roll, Gears and Guitars concerts (this year’s headline acts were Stone Temple Pilots, Trampled by Turtles, DriveBy Truckers and many others), kids’ zone and amateur events.

Monday’s road race course makes a 7½ mile loop around the city, winding from downtown into neighborhoods of Winston-Salem. The Winston-Salem Police Department vehicles start the race, making sure the course is clear, followed by the WSPD Motorcycle Police, who lead the peloton of bicyclists, and the film crew riding beside the peloton, comprised of dozens of racers. The chase cars with sponsors’ logos for every team are next, loaded with extra bicycle equipment. Finally, the EMS completes the procession, which comes through continually over nearly a three-hour period for the women’s race, and a fourhour period for the men’s race.

It was a beautiful day with a slight breeze for Monday’s race. Neighbors, friends, and families gathered in front yards for what has grown to be a traditional get-together for many. Yards were set up with games, chairs, tents, food, and beverages to enjoy. Spectators were entertained by the bike race, while having the opportunity to visit with folks that they may not often have had the chance to see. It is a true community event that brings people together.

Thanks to the help of many community-minded businesses and volunteers, and Winston-Salem Cycling; we are fortunate to continue to host this world-class cycling event.

Stranger DANGER

The

term “Stranger Danger” can be misleading, as it implies that all the people your child knows are safe. The reality is that 90 percent of abused children know the abuser, and it may be a neighbor, friend, or family member. The person can look just like you or me, and does not always appear as the monster that you may see in movies.

• Introduce your child to first responders, such as the police and firefighters, so they are not afraid to interact with them.

• Have safety measures in place, such as a home security alarm system, window locks, and alarms on windows and doors, so you are informed if someone is trying to open them.

• If your child has an individualized education plan, make sure safety is incorporated in the goals.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety offers some tips, including: • Never go near a car if a stranger asks for directions or anything else.

• Never accept gifts, money or medicine from a stranger.

• Never open a door for a stranger or tell him you are alone.

• Never speak about plans, especially vacation plans, to strangers.

Another effective strategy is making sure your child knows his or her address and phone number, including area code and zip code. They can either memorize it or carry it with them on an index card.

It is also wise to have a password or code word that only you and your child know. Anyone your child does not know who attempts to pick him up from school or befriend him should know this code word.

Be sure they know both parents’ first names. Roleplaying is one way to instill these skills. A perfect example is asking your child what he would do if he was in the house alone and someone rang the doorbell.

There are considerations if your child tends to wander by nature or has special needs, such as autism. The Autism Society of North Carolina has offered some suggestions on how to help keep your child safe, such as: • Be sure neighbors know your child and are willing to search for him in an emergency situation.

• Teach your child how to safely cross the street.

• Teach your child the meaning of street signs like “stop.”

• Teach your child the difference between a safe person and a stranger.

• Talk to your child about where to go if he or she is in trouble.

• Consider getting an ID bracelet or even an electronic tracking device.

If your child ever feels endangered, he or she should know to approach the nearest neighbor, friend, or law enforcement official. They should always do their best to avoid strangers when out and about, whether on the playground or at the shopping center. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety has listed things that you can do as a parent to help your child stay safe, including: • Maintain an awareness of your child’s environment.

• Be aware of anybody initiating alone time with your child.

• Check out babysitters or anyone who tends to your child carefully.

• Talk to your child about his time with those who care for him.

Reassure your child that people of all ages need to take precautions. One of the best things you can do that may be overlooked is sticking with a buddy. When you use the buddy system, you are less likely to be approached by trouble. He or she should be encouraged to trust their instincts and know that they should never be made to feel uncomfortable or do anything that they do not want to do. Be sure that “Stranger Danger” is not a one-time conversation and that it is revisited as various situations arise. By having confidence in your child, believing him and trusting his judgment, you are automatically doing your part to ensure he stays safe.

Teaching Children the Power of Words

As

children learn to speak and build their vocabulary, they quickly become aware of the power of words. And the way we speak to our children has a tremendous impact on how they speak to others. We have a great opportunity when our children are small to teach them communication skills that can serve them well.

Begin by modeling kind behavior. Our kindness to others is reflected in the words we speak. When we make fun of others or belittle someone else, we are not doing those things with kind words. Make it a practice to show your children how to be kind. It’s a far better teacher than merely telling them to do it.

Make it a practice to talk about emotions.

When you identify potential emotions, it helps children recognize them. When you point out those who may be feeling sad or excited—you open the doors of opportunity for your children to practice empathy. That kind of identification followed by open-ended questions like, “What would you say about such-and-such?” help a child learn words of kindness.

Laugh together, but respect one another.

During family time, it’s easy to tease our loved ones, but sometimes, we take things too far.

No one should ever be angry from teasing, so make sure respectful boundaries are in place to ensure that feelings are considered.

Teach your children the impact of their words. There are five questions that can help children understand the weight of their words: 1. Is it true?

2. Is it helpful? . Is it inspiring? . Is it necessary? . Is it kind?

Many adults would do well to remember those questions, too.

Teach your child the joy of helping other people. When children learn the life lesson, “It’s better to give than receive,” they can discover the way acts of service and words of kindness empower and uplift the giver as much as the one who receives the gifts! Make it a family matter to go the extra mile to be kind, pay it forward, or take delight in helping other people.

Don’t whine or complain—and discourage them in your children. At the end of a long day, the temptation to complain is often great. But your children don’t need to pick up that bad habit. Begin looking for the positive and identify it. Encourage your children to do the same. Instead of focusing on the million things that went wrong in the day, identify the one thing that went right.

Say “Please,” and “Thank you.” Common, everyday manners are a part of speaking powerful words. We acknowledge kindness with these simple words.

Your tone of voice matters. It’s a universal truth you’ll draw more flies with honey than you will with vinegar. When we speak, the tone of our voice often carries as much (if not more) weight than our words. A kind, level tone is better received than shouts and harsh criticism.

We have a great obligation to our children. It’s up to us to help them grow into well-rounded, functional adults. Let’s start with our words and help our children blossom!

Some

say it takes a village to raise a child. In many ways, that saying is true. Parents, guardians, family members, friends, teachers, and coaches are a few examples of people who can influence a child in different parts of their life. In addition, these influences have responsibilities to do what they can to help a child succeed. One area where it is essential for these responsibilities to be upheld is in education.

Recently, I came across the idea of an educational triangle.

This concept illustrates the relationships between those mainly involved in a child’s education and how they are connected, like a triangle. At one corner is the student, another corner are the parents/guardians, and at the last corner are the teachers and school. All of these people need to work together and fulfill their responsibilities. While the responsibilities of each corner can vary and overlap, it is important for everyone to understand how their role plays a part in the overall goal—helping the student be successful in school. Let’s take a look at the different obligations of the educational triangle.

Responsibilities of the Parents and Guardians – No matter what age they are, a child is still learning and figuring things out. As for parents and guardians, it is your task to help guide them in the right direction. After all, parents and guardians are a kid’s first teachers. Part of your responsibilities is to be role models.

With education, parental engagement and involvement are keys to success. Take an active role in your student’s learning; stay on top of their homework and assignments, but let them complete the work; help them study for tests; and know who your child is friends with. In addition, don’t be afraid to communicate with teachers when needed. Lastly, make education a priority and encourage your child to take ownership of their education. ave conversations about what is working and what needs improvement, as well as adding in fun ways to learn.

Responsibilities of the Teachers and Schools – Teachers and schools have the obligation to provide the best education possible for students. This comes from knowing your content area, giving opportunities for exploration and learning, and engaging students in their own learning. Along with these responsibilities, teachers and staff should keep up to date with professional development, new research, and keep challenging themselves to be better educators. Also, it is important for teachers and schools to give students a safe and welcoming learning environment.

Children spend around eight hours a day, 1 days a year, at school. They should feel comfortable and supported in this environment. Lastly, faculty and staff at schools are role models with the responsibilities of demonstrating professionalism and good behavior to students.

Responsibilities of the Student – To be honest, the responsibilities of the student are probably the most important in the educational triangle. In President Obama’s “Back to School” speech at Wakefield igh School in 2 , he references the opportunities education can provide, but it has to start with the student, carrying out their duties. e states that “you have the responsibility to yourself, to discover what you are good at, and you are the next generation of leaders in America.” Because of this, a student should work hard: work towards getting good grades, completing their work, and asking for help when they need it. For students, no one is going to do your work except for you, and there are no excuses for not trying.

One of my favorite quotes from President Obama’s speech is, “That’s why today I’m calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education and do everything you can to meet them.”

There are many moving parts in the educational triangle. Yet, when everyone involved fulfills their responsibilities and works towards a common goal, a child’s life can be changed for the better.

Developing Social Skills in Children

Women and Children’s ealth Network has defined social skills as, “Ways in which we interact with others that can help us become confident, happy people who are easy to get along with.” Being a friend, learning to share and helping others are a few simple, lifelong skills you can instill in your child.

First, find out what is reasonable to expect. Every age is associated with certain developmental milestones. Some highlights from birth through 7-yearsold include: • Smiling and laughing in response to play; • Imitating adults’ actions; Saying “ i” and “Bye”; • Verbalizing wants; • Taking turns with other kids; • Playing in a group; • Playing games with basic rules.

Find teachable moments and take advantage. Some prime examples are: • Making eye contact when interacting with your child; • Using greetings to acknowledge others; Turn-taking and sharing ideas; • Not interrupting and being a good listener; • Using words of courtesy; • Praising; • Apologizing when you make a mistake; Taking a deep breath and counting to 1 before reacting to a situation; • Pursuing your child’s interests.

Do not underestimate the power of playing with your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasized the importance of play as it relates to building social bonds. Research has showed that play can improve kids’ ability to get along with others, regulate emotions and manage stress. Some ideas from the American Academy of Pediatrics include: • BI T - MONT S reciprocating smiles, imitating baby’s coos and sounds, showing interesting colorful objects; • -12 MONT S putting toys within reach of the baby, using a mirror, playing peeka-boo; • 1- YEA S-OLD enriching creativity with simple, inexpensive toys like blocks, containers and wooden spoons, supervising play dates, playing makebelieve, reading and singing songs; • - YEA S-OLD singing and dancing, playing house, helping with chores, scheduling playdates.

Preparing for play dates by structuring them can help make things go smoother.

You can talk to your child about how to be a good host and make his or her friend feel comfortable. You may want to pick out some favorite games in advance or plan an arts and crafts project that the friend can take home. Some tips for entertaining include: • Painting or drawing a picture; • Doing puzzles or origami; • Singing songs; • Watching a movie; • Going to a park or playground;

• Baking or making a treat to enjoy.

Do not forget to praise the kids for sharing, listening, taking turns and using words of courtesy. You will surely have a guest who wants to return.

All children develop at their own pace. Some kids will naturally be social butterflies, while others are content observing from the sidelines. While there is a range of “normal,” there are some red flags, such as: • Not making eye contact with others; • Preferring to be alone; • Not having friends; • Avoiding physical contact; • Being a poor listener or interrupting; • Being frustrated or angry when he or she does not get his or her way.

If you notice any of these in your child, it is a good idea to talk to the pediatrician or school counselor. Keep in mind that some learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders may present as what seem like social challenges. These issues can lead to low self-esteem, which makes it important to be attentive and seek treatment early.

The benefits of developing good social skills go beyond the obvious ones of being an effective communicator and having a close group of friends. Social skills and appropriately regulating emotions can correlate with academic achievement. By making an effort to help your child handle stress and manage his or her feelings, you are actually making it easier for them to listen, learn and focus in school. Talking to other parents can be a wonderful resource, as you can share your experiences, and may even discover more strategies or a friend for yourself.

the November 2 1 meeting of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce LCCC), it was announced that a new scholarship was being launched in memory of Mason . unter, the beloved son of Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce member and former Chamber President, Brad unter. At that session, it was further announced that the Clemmons Community Foundation, Inc. had been designated to administer and have oversight of The Mason . unter ocational Educational Scholarship program. Scholarships awards were slated to be up to 2, per student and would be paid directly to the recipient’s school to be used for tuition, books, and other materials required for the program of their choice.

Clemmons Community Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that the first recipient of The Mason . unter ocational Educational Scholarship is Owen opgood. Owen recently graduated from West Forsyth igh School. e has a passion for aviation and will be attending Guilford Technical Community College this coming fall with the goal of becoming an airplane mechanic. Owen is actively working on his pilot’s license and hopes to solo in a few weeks. is hobbies include working on cars and anything mechanical. “I was honored to represent the unter family in accepting this scholarship,” Owen shared.

Once the scholarship is awarded, the winner is also assigned a mentor via the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce to provide support and guidance. As Owen’s mentor, Mike McGilvary, Financial Advisor with Marzano Capital Group, will be available to encourage him as he works toward his achieving his goals.

Vocation skills are not always given the consideration and credit they deserve when planning for careers.

Those who chose a skilled craft, trade, or vocation are an integral part of the fabric of day-to-day life.

what age do you begin talking to your child about the rewards of investing and understanding the balances of finances? Is five too young? Eight?

What about 12? The concept of saving for the future may sound impossible to grasp for such a young mind; yet, dealing with real ideas during teachable moments can and will produce a child who thinks about a plan for the future, rather than spending every earned coin because he or she possesses it.

First Lessons One of the first lessons children learn concerning money is about making a decision. For example, should I buy bubble gum or save the coin? Is it better to prepare lunch or spend the money at the cafeteria? Saving money begins with the process of thinking through the repercussions of choice.

Children who understand the beginning lessons can advance to more age-appropriate concepts. Afterward, encourage your child to create a budget and identify at least two goals.

Entrepreneurial Spirit The labors of work often set the wheels in motion for contemplating the idea of expanding wealth; therefore, encourage your daughter or son to start a business. The entrepreneurial spirit will start with questions such as, “What could I offer as a paying business?” “Would I have expenses?” and “What idea would boost my profits?”

Enterprising kids may consider babysitting, dog walking, or mowing yards as sound business ideas.

Play Money and Board Games For generations, “Monopoly” instructed young children in the art in making decisions about spending and receiving money. Another game appropriate for children seven years and older is “Big Money.” Combining “Monopoly” with “Yahtzee,” up to five players can experience problems such as liquidation, industry crashes, antitrust fines, and bubble bursts. Other games to enjoy are “Money

The Stock Market Investing, defined in simple terms, is using your money to create wealth over a long period. Rather than depend upon a bank account as a place for investments, kids will ask, “What are my options?” Open the door with a discussion of businesses in the stock market or watching a YouTube video about the New York Stock Exchange.

Begin by sharing your list of investments and discussing the reasons for growth and loss. As children grow, they, too, will show interest in financially sound businesses rather than viewing financial markets as an intimidating mystery. And, by discussing the rise and fall of stocks, young adults will feel more encouraged to consider investments as a means towards financial security.

A Special 50th Anniversary Also Makes for a Lasting Memory

As

a parent, you never know what events in your family’s lives will plant themselves into your children’s memories far into adulthood. You imagine, for instance, that vacations and holiday celebrations will be there. Maybe even a family ritual you shared together.

In reality, though, children carry far more memories with them later into life than just merely of those occasions.

Memories of big things, and perhaps more importantly, even small things, that as parents we didn’t give much thought to at the time. With regard to those moments, we can’t predict they’ll be special when they’re happening; they just have to play out before we can see what, if any, impact they have.

This brings me to Monday, uly 2 th, 1 , at 1 PM EST). 2 1 marks the fifty-year anniversary of the moment American Astronauts Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, and Command Module Pilot Michael Collins landed their spacecraft on the moon in the Sea of Tranquility.

Technically, Armstrong and Aldrin landed the Lunar Module, referred to as “The Eagle,” on the moon’s surface, while Collins piloted the Command Module circling the moon’s orbit during this time (there was only room for two astronauts in the lunar module, and he volunteered not to go.)

For a young child growing up in the s and s, space travel was still pure amazement to witness.

It was on May 2 th, 1 1, as a matter of fact, that President John F. Kennedy addressed Congress and made the famous statement that the United States “should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”

So you can imagine that by the year 1 , the public was beginning to get a little nervous about whether this would actually happen or not in that time frame. And yet it did.

But for a young boy growing up in a small town in southern Virginia, this timeline wasn’t the important element. Because you see, for me, as that young boy at the time, I was very

much simply enjoying the moment of each Apollo Mission. I was too young to be caught up in the hype of the timeline, as many in Washington and NASA were. Instead, to me, this was one of those special moments I would share with my mother again and again. For as long as I can remember, each time the rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and upon returning, landed in the ocean, my mother and I would have our eyes focused on the television screen. She was always good about having me watch important events in history as they were happening. At least, as well as we could on television, given that the Internet hadn’t been invented yet.

Witnessing those famous first steps on the moon and Armstrong’s proclamation that followed, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” was something I would never forget. I remember draping a large quilt over my top bunk and hanging it down to the lower bunk as my imaginary space capsule, and making a makeshift astronaut helmet out of a cardboard box, in order that I, too, could be an astronaut that day. Many years later, after having children of my own, as a Christmas gift, I gave my youngest child an astronaut costume. Only this one looked official down to the sewn-on NASA and American flag patches, and hard plastic helmet with face shield and a speaker inside that simulated mission control commands. e even got an inflatable space ship that same year. This was quite a leap from a simple cardboard box and bunk bed with a quilt. e liked it, and yet he would never truly understand what I felt on that day.

As all the news shows pay tribute this month to this very special anniversary, remembering its great significance in our country’s rich history, I will be remembering a young boy sitting in front of the television screen with his mom by his side, witnessing history being made once again. One memory may be more important than the other, with the importance determined by which side of the story you’re actually a part of. The importance for me was having mom there to watch it with me.

When

I had my first daughter, I thought how lucky I was, not only to have this beautiful child, but to have so many wonderful items and equipment to make raising her so much easier. I remembered tales from my mother about making formula every day; heavy glass baby bottles; washing cloth diapers and hanging them out on a clothesline; a bathinette—a rubber-type tub on legs that you filled with water in which to bathe the baby; a divided dish you put hot water in the base of to warm baby food; and the cumbersome stroller, carriage, wooden playpen, crib, and high chair that certainly weren’t take-the-baby-on-a-tripfriendly. Car seats were non-existent, unless you count the cloth seat with metal arms that hung over the front seat. They were definitely there to keep a toddler from climbing around the car and certainly not for protection in case of an accident.

Although I started out using cloth diapers with a diaper service, after using disposables on trips, I gave in to using them all the time—sorry, Earth! No matter how often I changed her cloth diapers, my poor daughter had a diaper rash due to the moisture and heat from the rubber pants which covered the diaper. For her comfort, and I admit, the ease in changing—no more diaper pins!

Disposable became the norm. I bought a number of cloth diapers to use when I had used up all the ones from the service, with days still to go before the next delivery.

They turned out to be great burp cloths and dust rags.

My mom loved, and was somewhat amazed at, all the items we had that made life with a baby so much easier than what was available with my sister and me. From the diapers and wipes to the car seats, portable cribs, strollers, high chairs, playpens, ready-to-eat formula, and disposable bottle inserts, mothers of my era did have it easier. I couldn’t imagine what my daughters could possibly get that would be better. I mean, what was there left that could be, or needed to be, invented?

Entering each of my daughters’ homes when there was

an infant in the mix opened my eyes to paraphernalia that, although not necessary, certainly is handy. Baby monitors have come a long way. Not only are they wireless, so you can move them from room to room, but now with a video camera, you can watch your child(ren) sleep or know when they are starting to stir. My youngest, having a baby and a toddler, has a camera set in each of their rooms with a monitor that scans both. Certainly makes it easier than sneaking into the nursery to check on them.

It’s mostly the advances in technology that have made today’s parents a bit more at ease with their children.

Instead of a swing that had to be wound up, now there is a cradle-type seat that can move in many different patterns, at different speeds, and play music from your phone. Even the simplest jumping seat now rotates, has lights, music, and attachments to keep infants entertained. Simple play mats have tabs on which to hang a number of fun toys that can easily be replaced.

There are machines that mix powdered formula with water, delivering the exact number of ounces needed into the bottle. Another that makes making your own baby food a breeze and the perfect serving-size containers to freeze them in.

So, my question is What will they think of next? I’m open to most anything that makes a parent’s life easier. As long as it isn’t a robot that cuddles, rocks, soothes, and sings sweet grands to sleep. I don’t know about you, but that’s my job!

Mosquitos

osquitos are a nuisance,

and one that you want to get under control, so it doesn’t affect your family’s health and safety, especially during these warmest months of the year. While many are just pests, others can spread viruses that cause disease, so you want to be particularly vigilant this summer and fall. One virus commonly spread by mosquitos that you may have heard about is the West Nile virus. The tricky part is that sometimes there are no symptoms, or they are just mild, like a fever or headache, when you think it could be something else.

There is also the Zika virus that can be diagnosed through a blood or urine test, though there is no specific medicine for treatment. That is why it is so important to try to avoid a confrontation with a mosquito in the first place.

The American Mosquito Control Association breaks down prevention into the three D’s, which stand for “drain, dress and defend.” The drain part is probably self-explanatory, while the dress may not always cross your mind.

Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing is better for deterring mosquitos, as most prefer dark colors and like to bite through tight clothes. The best defense is a repellent that has been registered by the Environmental Protection Agency.

You always want to read the label before applying the product; only put it on exposed skin and not on clothing, and keep it away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. The American Academy of Pediatrics favors DEET-based repellents

for kids as young as two-months old and encourages concentrations of 1 percent or less. Be sure to wash off the repellent once you come in from working or playing outside. If you are applying sunscreen, always do so first and then add the repellent second. If you ever experience a reaction to the repellent, wash it off immediately and call your doctor.

Now that you have taken care of yourself, take a look at what you can do around your property to improve the situation. The American Mosquito Control Association suggested some measures you can take in order to get mosquitos off your property, including: • Not allowing water to accumulate in the saucers of flowerpots or pet dishes for more than two days.

• Disposing of buckets, unused plastic swimming pools or cans that hold water.

• Checking air conditioners and faucets and repairing any leaks.

• Getting rid of puddles that remain for a few days.

• Removing standing water.

• Changing water in birdbaths at least once a week.

• Checking for trapped water in plastic used to cover boats or pools.

• Irrigating the lawn and garden.

Mosquito control can be complicated.

Just because you have removed your standing water so the mosquitos can’t lay eggs anymore, doesn’t mean that your neighbors have done the same.

Adult mosquitos like plant nectar, so you may find them in bushes or shrubs.

Mosquitos actually do not usually take shelter in the grass, but keeping the grass short can be beneficial. Getting rid of weeds and foliage can help, as well. You may also choose to contact an exterminator to find just the right insecticides to make a difference.

If you are traveling, do your research and find out if mosquitos are prevalent in the area. Make sure your hotel has air conditioning, or if you happen to be outside, sleep under a mosquito bed net, which you can purchase at an outdoor store or on the Internet.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that the most effective bed nets are W OPES-approved, which means they are compact, white, rectangular, have 1 holes per square inch and are long enough to tuck under the mattress. Permethrin-treated bed nets offer the most protection.

Sometimes just having a few tools can help to get rid of these privacyinvaders. Indoor insect sprays work instantly to kill mosquitos. They like to stay in dark and humid places, so good spots to check would be under your sink or furniture, or in the laundry room.

When you take proper precautions, you will find that mosquitos can become more manageable.

Nearly American bird species will nest in an artificial house, but the size of the perch and the diameter of the entrance hole matter to every species.

Fearful of nighttime attacks from a variety of predators, or the loss of eggs, many birds will seek shelter using their own size opening.

enthusiasts have two of the basic needs for bird survival already in place by hanging a feeder and growing native plants, as well as maintaining a bird bath. The next step is to consider adding shelter to your bird sanctuary. While a rectangular wooden box with an angled roof and entrance hole sounds simple enough, it’s essential to know what type of native birds frequently visit your location. As the landlord of a future number of houses, you may want to attract specific species.

Similar to any house guest, some are messy, picky, or vacate days after arriving.

SPARROWS: A helper to gardeners, sparrows offer weed control by consuming large quantities of seeds; therefore, welcome this little bird to your paradise. The entrance requirement is a hole onefourth inch in diameter. Additionally, you may attract a white-breasted nuthatch.

For the best environment, place the house 1 feet above ground in a wooded location.

TIP: Changing the entrance of an existing birdhouse requires only a thin square piece of wood. After measuring the intended size, cut the hole into a thin square piece of wood and nail all four corners to front of house, new hole over previous hole TIP: Consider adding a hinged roof to prevent leaks and help you gain access to clean out the interior.

BL EBI DS AND CA OLINA W ENS Preferring a one-and-a-half-inch diameter hole without an exterior perch, bluebirds and Carolina wrens guard their houses and attack intruders. It is wise to place the house in a semi-secluded location, away from other shelters.

TIP: Research the dimensions of the house, which define the interior floor space and height. The right size ensures the shelter will provide adequate insulation to keep baby birds warm without smothering them in a cramped space.

WOODPECKERS: Be warned, woodpeckers are feisty renters that prefer a 2-inch in diameter entrance; however, they also are known

to chip away a narrow opening until it suits their particular needs.

Nesting Shelves ousing for the robins and barn swallows only requires an -inch by -inch hanging platform. Open to the air, it serves as a stable shelf to hold their nests.

Birdhouse Gourds

While wood is an accommodating material to construct a birdhouse with, consider the new experience of designing and perhaps painting your own house from the first step, by planting a birdhouse gourd seed.

Since the plants require up to 11 days to produce a mature gourd, consider starting the seeds indoors four weeks before planting in late April to early May. In advance, ensure the plants have a sturdy trellis able to hold the weight.

By the time the stem turns brown, the season will reveal signs of frost and the time to cut and prepare for drying.

Typically, the process takes six weeks until the seeds are fully dry. You’ll have plenty of time to prepare your new birdhouses for the following spring!

Don’t Wait!

As soon as your birdhouses are available, seek out the best possible locations to hang them. In addition to establishing several nesting sites, many birds will continue to lay eggs if their initial effort failed because of poor weather, predators, or an infestation of parasites. In North Carolina, bluebirds, for instance, seek a nesting location and lay eggs between March and April.

Across May through August, three clutches of eggs will hatch. Late Fall may be the best time to prepare your birdhouses for new tenants.

While you may want to invite birds to your yard to promote birdwatching, native birds, which include woodpeckers, are also voracious eaters, anxious to rid your yard and garden of pesky insects which fly, crawl, and slither. With the addition of birds, you’ll notice more abundant blooms in flowerbeds and more fruitful harvests. A win-win situation for both feathered friends and their admirers!

When you do something you haven’t done before, it’s like an adventure.

Sometimes it’s fun; sometimes it’s scary. What kind of adventures have you had?

You need to be brave when you try something new. You had to be brave the first time you went to school by yourself. ow about when you go to the doctor’s office and have to get a shot? Learning something new can be scary, too. If you try to ski or skate, you might fall down. What if you paint a picture and someone laughs or says it isn’t very good?

Maybe you’re playing a new video game, but you always lose.

Being brave is a good thing. But it’s even more important to trust the Lord. Two times in the verse above, it says you should trust the Lord. To trust means to be sure. Be sure that the Lord can lead you and help you!

You don’t have to try everything, and you won’t be a super-star in all the things you do. But in everything you can trust the Lord! You can talk to Mom or Dad about the things you want to do and the things you don’t want to do. You can talk to God about it, too! e is right here, right now.

You can talk to him when you’re scared or worried. God can help you do the new, scary thing…or he can help you decide if you shouldn’t do it at all.

This summer when you are having new adventures with your family and friends, be brave! Be strong! Trust the Lord!

Americans, we started this month celebrating our freedom. We are indeed blessed to live in the land of the free! As Christians, we have a different kind of freedom to celebrate as well. Throughout the New Testament we find verses about our freedom in Christ. ere are just a few Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth, and the truth

will set you free.”

So, we can rest assured that our faith in Jesus has set us free, but from what? The Bible makes it clear that we all sin, and our sin has consequences. The ultimate consequence of sin is death.

What’s Your Pastor’s Batting Average?

you know that the record for the highest batting average in Major League Baseball still belongs to outfielder Ty Cobb? e had an average of . over twenty-four seasons. That means that for every ten times at bat, he only succeeded in getting on base a little more than three times.

While most of us strive for perfection, the truth is, other than Jesus, no one is perfect.

Not even your pastor. But, there are lots of people in your church who expect him to “bat a thousand” every Sunday. Not only must he face his own inner critic, he has folks in his congregation who are quick to let him know if he does or says something in error.

Why not be the one in your church who, instead of holding your pastor to an unrealistic ideal, supports and encourages him without condition?

When Jesus died on the cross, he took all of our sins, past, present, and future, onto the cross with him. By doing so, he took our punishment on himself, defeating Satan by defeating sin.

When we become a Christian by first acknowledging that we have sinned and then accepting esus’ sacrifice as the punishment for those sins, we are set free! Free from the Law and free from the eternal consequences of sin.

Free indeed!

My Grace-Full Life

Recommended Reading

E

arlier this year, I started a recommended reading list on my blog, and a few months ago, I shared the first three books I read in 2 1 It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, by Lysa Ter eurst, Forgotten God and Crazy Love, both by Francis Chan. I am super-particular about whose books I read, so if I read them, it’s because the author is someone whose theology I trust.

Anyway, I thought it was time for a mid-year checkup with my list of recommended reading.

Chan, Francis. Letters to the Church: I am turning into a big fan of Francis Chan’s writing not only because it’s good writing—but because he 1) writes Biblical truth and 2) his writing feels like he’s having a conversation with you. “Letters to the Church” is a challenge to the modern church to revisit their current models and compare them to the model set for us in the Bible...to realize that church isn’t about what we can do for the congregation, but training the congregation about how we can serve the world. A powerful book, this one is a great read for anyone in church leadership or who is looking to follow the Biblical calling to “Be the church.”

Ehman, Karen. Keep Showing Up: How to Stay Crazy in Love When Your Love Drives You Crazy: Keep Showing Up will be a lifeline for many frustrated women who are ready to give up on their vows.

A Christian perspective on marriage, the author encourages the reader to look at marriage—and themselves—from a Biblical point of view. It’s not about us as wives, or about changing our husbands... it’s about letting God change us through our marriage.

A great read for any woman, no matter what season of marriage...and honestly, I think it’s a great book for single women, too. I found several takeaways that will benefit me in other situations! aren’s writing style is funny and relatable. She is totally transparent, and in the process, gently applies wisdom and experience to the common frustrations that come with married life.

Hodges, Chris. The Daniel Dilemma: I had the opportunity to hear Chris odges speak at Proverbs 1 Ministry’s 2 1 “She Speaks” conference and found him to be a great, engaging, Biblicallyminded teacher. At the conference, we were all given advance copies of his book, The Daniel Dilemma and it only took me two years to get to it. The book’s tagline is, “ ow to stand firm and love well in a culture of compromise.” This is a book that any Christian needs to read. The author spends time explaining different situations Daniel faced and how he maintained his faith in the face of adversity. The author uses those stories, as well as the stories of Jesus, to parallel situations we face today. As sin is embraced more every day and the world becomes more jaded to the Truth of God’s word, The Daniel Dilemma gives the reader an opportunity to explore the question, “What would esus do, truly?” and helps guide and direct to Biblical solutions.

Mehrer, Colleen. God’s View of You: Discovering Your Biblical Worth: Colleen Mehrer has written an excellent book that touches on a common issue for many women selfworth. We live in a culture that celebrates “being yourself.” Yet, it’s a real problem for many women.

We tell ourselves half-truths and outright lies based on our experiences and the comparison games we play. Colleen’s book explores what the Bible has to say about us as individuals. She cites Scripture to help women identify their value and worth from a Biblical perspective. The book encourages the reader to truly embrace who God has made us to be. Four Names of God and What They Mean

In

Old Testament times, names were very significant. A person’s name often revealed something about their place of birth or character. It’s not surprising then, since names were so important to the Hebrew people, that God chose to reveal aspects of His nature to them through names with significant meaning. Each name is like a facet of a diamond, revealing a different aspect of the flawless, beautiful character of God. Jehovah-Raah means “the Lord my Shepherd.” This is the name in the familiar first verse of Psalm 23. Jehovah is derived from a Hebrew word that means “the SelfExistent one” and suggests “to become known.” This name points to the fact that God is continually revealing Himself to mankind and wants us to know him.

Throughout the Old Testament, Jehovah was combined with other words, such as Raah, to illumine God’s character traits.

Raah is derived from a word that means “shepherd” or “companion.” Since the psalmist, David, was a shepherd himself, he knew the kind of guidance, protection, and care a flock required. He observed how Jehovah Raah cared for His flock, the Hebrew people, and he recognized Him as the perfect Shepherd. Through the timeless words of the 23rd Psalm, David still speaks to us today, encouraging us to rest in the care of Jehovah-Raah, the perfect Shepherd:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul.

Jehovah-Raah can also be translated “the Lord my Friend.”

El Shaddai means “God Almighty,” or “Giver of Strength.” Many people first learned this name of God when Amy Grant’s song, El Shaddai, became popular.

When her Age to Age album went platinum, and El Shaddai won Song of the Year at the 1983 Dove Awards, El Shaddai became a household word for millions of people.

El is derived from a word meaning, “to be strong, powerful.” As with the name Jehovah, El is combined with other words to illumine specific aspects of God’s character. In this case, El is paired with Shaddai, which comes from a word that means “mountain.” Thus, the name El Shaddai describes God as awesome and powerful. When Abraham was 99 years old, God appeared to him and said, “I am El Shaddai…you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.”1 Only the “Giver of Strength” could enable a 99-year-old man to become the father of a “multitude of nations”! The takeaway for us today is that when we are weary or facing what seems like an impossible task, we can call upon El Shaddai, God Almighty, to help us tackle whatever obstacle may lie before us.

Jehovah-Shalom means “The Lord is peace.” The world over, people know that the Hebrew word shalom means peace.

Most people, however, are unaware of the deeper meaning of the word. In its truest sense, shalom means complete peace: a sense of well-being, wholeness, contentment, security, harmony, and prosperity. It not only means the absence of war, but also a tranquil, safe, and orderly personal life that is free of agitation and discord. Shalom means that one is at peace within oneself, with those in the family and community, and at peace with God.

When a rift develops between friends or family members, or when our lives are weighed down with cares and troubles, Jehovah-Shalom can guide us into shalom.

This is the kind of peace the prophet Isaiah spoke of: “You [God] keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”2 Isaiah foretold that the Messiah would be sar shalom, the perfect peace of God, in human form: A child will be born for us.

A son will be given to us.

The government will rest on his shoulders.

He will be named: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Sar Shalom3 Today’s Name for God. In the present era, God is most commonly called Father.

Though God is infinite, powerful, and allknowing, He invites all who are His children through the finished work of Christ to call him Abba. Abba is a term of warm, heartfelt affection that is translated “Father.” Abba was the name Jesus used when he prayed in deep distress to his Father before he was crucified. This deeply personal name for God reveals the kind of relationship God desires to have with us all: “And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”4 1. Benefits of Powerful Prayer and What to Pray About

Prayer can boost your mood, increase alertness, and facilitate self-control. Prayer can calm anxiety, quiet the mind, and soothe the soul. Stress, anxiety, and depression may run rampant, but through prayer, you can achieve a greater peace of mind and a healthy, positive outlook on life. When life gets you down or you’re blocked and don’t know what to do, prayer can make a positive difference.

Increasingly, double-blind studies are confirming a positive relationship between prayer and good health. Prayer, like meditation, can slow your breathing, lower your blood pressure, and slow your heart rate. Whether you are studying the meditations of Tibetan Buddhists or the prayers of Franciscan nuns, researchers found that spiritual practice increases joy and well-being. According to the National Institutes of Health, those who pray daily are 40% less likely to have high blood pressure than those who do not pray regularly. Other studies found that prayer increases dopamine, the feel-good hormone, and boosts the immune system, helping people stay healthy and fight illness.

POSITIVE, PASSIONATE, AND POWERFUL PRAYER! Soothe yourself with inner tranquility, improve your well-being, and live a more peaceful and joy-filled life. You will feel more hopeful, satisfied, and contented, and will be able to better manage issues you struggle with.

Praying is believing. Praying strengthens faith, and the more we believe, the more we can receive. Lean not onto your own understanding. Walk by faith not by sight.

The more you pray, the better off you can be. Strengthen, build, and grow your relationship with a Higher Power. Turn off extraneous thoughts, focusing on God. Open your mind and heart and pray silently in your thoughts, or pray out loud with words.

WHO TO PRAY FOR AND WHAT TO PRAY ABOUT Pray for Yourself and Your Life Pray for God’s discernment, guidance, protection, and provision.

Pray for what you need first, and then pray for what you want.

Pray for the desires of your heart. Pray that you will have a heart for God, putting Him at the center of your life. Pray that He helps you live your life fruitfully, productively and abundantly, to the fullest, according to His will, plan, and purposes. Ask for daily provisions, for the forgiveness of transgressions and for deliverance from temptation. Request wisdom, strength, and help in resolving the things you are anxious or worried about.

Pray for Faith, Family, and Friends Pray for strength of the family and pray to grow your relationships. Give gratitude for your spouse, children, parents, siblings, and friends and pray that these relationships be founded and grounded on unconditional love, honesty, and integrity.

Pray to grow closer, more personal, and intimate with the people you love. Pray that all of your relationships will be peaceful, passionate, and positive, as well as healthy and fulfilling.

Pray for Plans, Purposes, and Purification Remember to be thankful in all circumstances and to be filled with gratitude for everything God has done, is doing, and will do for you in the future. He has plans to give you hope and a future. Pray that your purposes in life be revealed so you know clearly what your mission is. Pray to be cleansed and purified from unrighteousness.

Pray for Your Home, Workplace, and Community Pray for your co-workers, leaders, government, and those in authority. Pray for people in need, including the helpless, homeless, hurting, and lost, all of whom need spiritual support. Pray for spaces and places, including your home, church, town, country, and world.

However you pray, whether by yourself or with others, and however often you pray, prayer will lift your spirit and will give you a greater sense of purpose and meaning. Pray passionately and powerfully to help cope with difficulties.

Prayer will keep you grounded and will give you a sense of peace, hope, and gratitude for your many blessings in life.

Tips to Keep Your Kids Interested in Reading During the Summer

adults love being able to escape into a good book and want to be able to share this love with their children.

Especially with the rise of streaming TV and electronic games, being able to successfully cultivate a true love of the literary arts can be difficult at times, but is always a worthy pursuit. During the school year, most children have set amounts of time they are required to read as part of their homework, but how do parents continue this during the summer without making it an unwanted chore? Being able to translate reading into a fun activity for children is something that should start when they are young, and will build a greater love for reading as they grow.

Even children who grow up with reading as a standard activity in their days can struggle during the summer with motivation, since there are so many other distractions when school is out that draw their attention. These distractions can be used for good, however, if you play your cards right.

your child find books that relate to the things distracting them the most. If all they want to do is go to the pool, get some books about spending time at the pool. If they are focused entirely on their summer sports, find some kid-friendly biographies about a sports hero or two of their choice.

Following that same thread, you can tie your reading into your vacation plans during the summer to get them psyched up for that part of their summer break as well. For example, if you are going to Disney World in the beginning of August, spend July reading all about the history of the Disney family and park, and by reading stories about their favorite characters. If you are planning a trip to the beach, find books that are either set at the beach or are informational books about marine life. Who doesn’t love reading about dolphins right before they go on a vacation where they could possibly see a dolphin in the flesh?

Competition is also a great motivator for children—for everybody, really. Setting up a reading challenge, especially one

with rewards, is a great way to add some fun into reading this summer. You can include the entire family to make it interesting; plus, you get the added bonus of teaching by example. Create several challenges that involve reading and then use them to create a bingo board. Whoever makes a line with finished challenges gets a prize, and whoever fills up the entire board first gets an even bigger prize. Challenges depend on your family, but some good examples are “Reading for 30 minutes outside,” or “Read a story to a stuffed animal.”

When it comes right down to it, the best way to keep children motivated with reading is to make it fun. These tips may work for your kids, but if they don’t, there’s no need to despair! Every parent knows their child the best, and you will know what causes the most fun in their lives. When you know what causes the fun for each child, you can manipulate the reading to work into that fun activity somehow. And don’t forget to make sure that they see you having fun reading right along with them!

The Summer Slide and How to Prevent It

summer brings a lot of fun: beach trips, sleeping in, days at the pool, and recurring cookouts. Unfortunately, it also brings the Summer Slide. While the term “the summer slide” sounds like great fun, conjuring up images of laughing down a water slide, it actually describes the phenomenon of children losing knowledge throughout the summer, between the end of the previous school year and the beginning of the next. Studies show that the average school-age child loses at least one to three months of knowledge over summer break, with children living below the poverty line being exceptionally vulnerable to this backslide.

Children thrive on routine, so transitioning from a structured educational setting into an often chaotic summer without routine can be challenging with regard to retaining knowledge. As the old adage goes, if you don’t use it you lose it—this is especially accurate for math facts, more than reading knowledge (although both are affected). As mentioned earlier, studies show that children who are in traditionally disadvantaged socio-economic groups are at higher risk of this knowledge loss; often this is because the summer programs that have the best academic-based routines are prohibitively expensive. This effect is called the ‘faucet effect”—while families that are middle to upper class have a relatively steady flow of resources throughout the year, those who are not have a slower flow of resources during the summer, as many of their resources are obtained through the school system.

This doesn’t mean that you need to accept the summer slide as fact, if you can’t afford this higher level of childcare for the summer, or if you don’t want that level of structure during this time. The easiest way to avoid the summer slide is to keep children’s brains working during the break. If you are home with them, keep a somewhat regular routine that includes learning time during every day, including math worksheets. There are books you can purchase, both online and at many bookstores, which are grade-specific, and even ones that target the summer between grades. Base this on where your child is academically, so that he or she isn’t at either end of the spectrum—bored or overwhelmed.

This doesn’t need to be an extensive learning schedule, either; one sheet is absolutely sufficient to keep the cogs in their brains moving.

Learning also doesn’t need to be promoted only through structured worksheets. There is a type of homeschooling called “unschooling,” and this is a

fantastic way to attain learning and retain knowledge through the summer break. The premise behind this type of learning is to have children decide what they want to learn and then learn through experiences.

The summer is the perfect time to learn through experience, as there are a significant number of things happening during the summer that target children.

Examples of this are ranger walks at state parks and programs at the planetarium.

Online educational apps have been increasing in popularity in the past several years, and have improved greatly in gaining interest with both

parents and children. If you have the resources to be able to download some, they are a great way to get children engaged in learning, because almost all kids love getting screen time—even if it is educational.

There are a lot of different apps that cover a myriad of subjects; it’s a good idea to read the reviews before downloading, and setting guidelines to avoid doing more than an hour a week.

Some studies have shown that working in apps such as iReady for more than 60 minutes per subject weekly can actually backfire and overstimulate the brain.

One of the best ways to reduce the chance of the summer slide is also the easiest—have kids read. Pick books that cover all the subjects, pick books that hold their interest, and have them read consistently throughout the entire summer. By keeping these things in mind and their brains moving throughout the full summer break, you will save yourself stress and heartache at the beginning of the upcoming school year.

The Benefits of Ballet for the Whole Family

BASICS OF BALLET CLASS Typically, ballet class starts with warm-up exercises at the “barre,” like “plies” that stretch Achilles tendons and muscles in your legs, followed by “tendues,” where you brush the floor with your feet and then “pointe” your toes.

You may be asked to do some stretching after your barre work before starting combinations in the center. After center work, you may travel horizontally across the floor or diagonally from the corner.

Tip for Jumps: Always begin a jump with bent knees from a good “demi plie,” keeping both feet on the ground. Make sure your heels are firmly planted, feet are not “rolling” inwards or outwards, and knees are aligned over your toes before you become airborne.

Tip for Turns: Always remember to “spot.”

Focus your eyes on something stationary in the direction you are headed and keep fixated on that spot, as you turn your head to face that same spot in your rotation around your axis, your spine.

Learn to connect with your audience to express yourself artistically and creatively. Develop your own innate sense of artistry with this creative outlet!

Clever Tips for the Pool and Beach

lots of moms, summertime can be anything but relaxing.

From endless sunscreen latherings to constant monitoring of your little toddler’s every last move near water, to your never-ending quest to find comfort for your child and yourself in the hot, salty sun…summer break can be downright exhausting. Yet these tasks are a rite of passage for every mom. To help moms reclaim their sanity while enjoying a safe, sun-filled summer, here are some clever products and ideas to try….

• Baby Pools and Bumbo Chairs. If you’re headed to the beach with an infant or crawler this summer, consider taking along a baby pool or Bumbo chair. A full baby pool on the beach keeps your little one happy, occupied, cool and safe (with you nearby, of course), and the assistance of a Bumbo Chair helps little ones enjoy the sand or small waves over his feet.

• Corn Starch. You know how frustrating it is to eat on the beach without having sandy or salty hands? Try sprinkling corn starch on your hands before you snack. It dries up the moisture and the sand falls away! This trick also works well on your feet after you leave the beach!

• Smart Phone Timers. Never forget to reapply sunscreen again! Chances are good you’ll have your phone with you at the beach and pool, so simply set the alarm or timer on your smartphone to help you remember.

• Frozen Aloe. In case the sunburns do happen, try freezing aloe in ice cube trays before you head out into the sun. Frozen aloe cubes are perfect skin soothers!

• Baking Soda. Another remedy for sunburns and bug bites! Just mix a little baking soda with water and apply the paste directly to the spots that burn or itch.

• “Paint” the Pool Deck. To pass the time of pool breaks, consider bringing paint brushes along with your buckets and pails. Have your kids “paint” the pool deck with water from their pails.

• Paintbrush to Get Rid of Sand.

Speaking of painting, throw a large paintbrush into your car when you are headed to the beach. Before you pile chairs, toys, and umbrellas back into the car, use the paintbrush to dust off all the sand. Works like a charm!

• Natural “Babysitter.” Dig a shallow, wide hole in the sand under an umbrella and let the kids play in it. Babies/toddlers love it in there and parents don’t have to chase them all over.

• Cool Flip-Flops. Turn your flip-flops over when you get to the beach so that they are not burning up when you put them back on to leave the beach. So simple, yet brilliant!

• Don’t Forget to Bag Up. You know how your kids will always want to leave the beach with a million shells and trinkets they found, yet you never have a good place to store them all? Stock your beach bag with plastic zip- lock bags, and label them so your kids won’t fight over whose shell is whose!

• Bring Out the Bright. This may seem like a no-brainer, but dressing your kids in the brightest neons of the season

can help you keep a close eye on them as they run around the beach or swim among a sea of people in the pool.

• Shaded Baby Floats. Both my kids loved the water from an early age, but when they’re too young to wear sunscreen, it can be a little nervewracking to let them swim for too long.

Once I discovered a shaded baby float, we were all able to stay in the pool much longer (and my arms didn’t ache from holding my baby the entire time!).

• Puddle Jumpers. Both my kids used arm floaties and they did just fine; however, Puddle Jumpers add in extra protection for new swimmers and avoid any possibility of them getting caught upside down in the water. Puddle Jumpers are U.S. Coast Guard-approved, and are perfect for building water confidence in kids.

• SPF Swim Shirts and Rash Guards.

These are not new to the market, but for those of you who despise lathering up your kids with sunscreen as much as I do, these are great options. Plus kids love them!

• An Umbrella Tent. Many beaches on the East Coast now prohibit large tents due to safety reasons. Instead, purchase three beach umbrellas and set them up in a triangle formation to create a large shaded area for your kiddos. This is a great place to put the baby pool we mentioned in the first tip, above.

These patriotic snacks are great for 4th of July festivities or any day! The recipes use lots of in-season berries to encourage fresh and local eating.

Kids can be very hands-on with these recipes!

PATRIOTIC FLAG SNACK INGREDIENTS: Strawberries (sliced) or use red fruit roll-ups Blueberries Cream cheese (or cool whip) Graham crackers DIRECTIONS: 1. Have kids assemble the flag by spreading the cream cheese or cool whip onto one side of the graham cracker.

2. Add 4-6 blueberries in the top right corner of the graham cracker (horizontally) as “stars.”

3. Add the sliced strawberries (or red fruit roll-ups cut lengthwise into strips) in rows for the “stripes,” leaving some white cream cheese/cool whip showing in between rows.

FIRECRACKER DOGS An adorable festive take on traditional “pigs-in-a-blanket”!

INGREDIENTS: 2 packages of 16 hot dogs each 1 can refrigerated breadstick dough 16 thick slices of Colby jack or cheddar cheese (from the deli) 16 wooden skewers DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or silpat liner).

2. Skewer hot dogs all the way through lengthwise, leaving about 1.5 inch of skewer sticking out of the top (for later adding the cheese star).

3. Carefully wrap the hot dog with a strip of breadstick dough (leaving a little hot dog exposed all the way as it wraps around).

4. Place wrapped hot dogs on the lined baking sheet and bake according to the breadstick dough package instructions.

5. We recommend purchasing extra thick cheese slices from your grocer’s deli to get thick slices about ¼”-three-eighths inches thick, or cutting them from a block yourself. Using the star cookie cutter, cut out star shapes.

6. After the hot dogs have baked and cooled, add the star cheese to the top of the skewer.

7. Display standing up in a Mason jar and serve with lines of ketchup “stripes!”

RED WHITE & BLUE FRUIT SALSA WITH CINNAMON SUGAR STAR CHIPS INGREDIENTS: Whole wheat soft tortillas Star cookie cutter 2 Tbsp. melted butter ½ cup sugar 1 Tbsp. cinnamon 1 cup raspberries (optional) ½ cup strawberries, chopped ¼ cup red apples, chopped ¼ cup blueberries ¼ cup seedless raspberry or strawberry jam DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400°.

2. Using the star cookie cutter, cut star shapes out of the tortillas.

3. Spread out stars on a baking sheet and brush them with melted butter.

4. In a small bowl, stir cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle generously onto tortilla stars.

5. Bake tortillas until crispy, about 5 minutes.

6. Toss chopped fruit and jam together. Serve with the star chips!

June, the owners of Mac & Nelli’s announced that their restaurant is going through some changes, including a new logo, a new head chef, and a new menu! These are exciting changes for the nine-yearold restaurant.

The New Logo Owners Lori and Art Shaver are excited about the bold new look of their name. “With all the changes we were going through, a fresh new logo seemed apropos,” said Lori. Their mission has always been to serve good food in a friendly, fun environment so their new slogan, “Come for the food, stay for the fun” is a perfect fit!

The New Chef Chef Antwan Hairston joins the Mac & Nelli’s family as head chef. A graduate of Providence Culinary Training Program, Chef Hairston has worked at noted Winston-Salem restaurants such as Mozelle’s, Tre Nonne, Tanglewood Pizza, and Diamondback Grill. He has an unparalleled passion for food and is certain to be a dynamic driving force in the continued success of Mac & Nelli’s.

“We are thrilled to have him on our team,” said Lori. “He has revamped and streamlined our menu in a great way.

Antwan has embraced the core of who our restaurant is by adding his own signature touch to established dishes, and bringing in his own recipes to the menu.”

The New Menu “Our customers can expect us to continue with favorites like our wings and burgers,” Lori shared. “Antwan is making sure those Mac & Nelli traditions continue.

However, he has a heart for Southern Comfort Food. And he’s bringing his own signature flavors to the menu.” Some examples include: APPETIZERS Fried Pickles: Is there any appetizer more southern? Beer battered, house-made pickles are fried to crispy perfection and served with a chipotle crème sauce.

3 Little Pigs: Another Southern-inspired appetizer, fried pork rinds are topped with pork, bacon, jalapenos, and a decadent pimento cheese sauce.

Goat Cheese and Jam: Chef Antwan makes this jam, and it’s a perfect combination with creamy goat cheese and crostini.

Vanilla Pound Cake with Lemon Curd and Fresh Fruit

BY SARA WILES “Rustic” desserts—sloppy, decadentlooking desserts, if you will—are easy and classic. Simply assembled desserts are perfect for casual parties or at-home Sunday suppers. The fresh berries and lemon curd are a classic combination for summer evenings. Swap out other preserves and seasonal fruit to have a year-round recipe staple!

INGREDIENTS:

CAKE: 1 stick of butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 1½ cups flour ¼ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup milk 2 lemons, juiced and zested 1 teaspoon vanilla FRUIT: Store-bought lemon curd 1 pint whipping cream ¼ cup sugar Berries and fruit

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a mixer, fitted with paddle attachment, cream together butter and sugar for three minutes. Add eggs. In a separate bowl, combine together milk, lemon juice, zest and vanilla. Add half of the wet ingredients to the butter and sugar mixture, mix for 5 seconds, then add half of the dry ingredients and mix for 5 seconds. Repeat with second half of ingredients, ending with dry ingredients. Pour batter into 6- or 8-inch cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes.

Meanwhile, whip cream with a whisk attachment until stiff peaks form. Add sugar and whip for another 30 seconds.

After cake has cooled, layer with lemon curd and whipped cream between both cakes. Top with whipped cream and berries of your choosing.
