Welcome to the month of Valentine’s and Groundhog Day! While we are not in my favorite season of the year, this is a very special month to me and my family! Valentine’s Day was my husband’s mother’s birthday. Delphia Bralley was the epitome of love and so it was fitting for her to be born that day! Hard to believe it’s been 5 years since her passing. I was so fortunate to have her in my life, and am grateful for the legacy of love she passed down to our family.

The importance of love and kindness cannot be stressed enough. In fact, love is so important that it’s mentioned 348 times in the New American Standard version of the Bible. Any word mentioned that many times is something to be respected. I think we’re all guilty of using it as a flippant response to lots of things. How many times do we say “I love pizza, the beach, chocolate…?”—you fill in the blank. But most of the time, do you really “love” it? It might be important, you might like it a lot, but do you really love it? Even better, does it love you back? Love is

I met her family in the late ’90s at Sunrise Church and I’ve watched this sweet girl grow into the beautiful, poised young woman that she is today. She does so much for all the Forsyth Mag publications and is a delight to all who meet her.

3 Tax Strategies to Reduce Tax This Year

We are quickly approaching the April 15th deadline to file your 2019 tax return. Hopefully, you find yourself in a situation this year without any surprises in money owed to Uncle Sam. At Marzano Capital Group, we work closely with our clients and their tax advisors to develop an appropriate tax strategy. While every client’s situation is different, below are the top three strategies we are discussing with our clients.

TAX LOSS HARVESTING

Tax-loss harvesting is when you sell investments at a loss in order to reduce your tax liability. You can harvest losses to offset gains, dollar for dollar, as well as an offset of up to $3,000 in earned income. Per the IRS, when under the rule with the sale of a security for a loss, you cannot repurchase a substantially identical investment for 30 days. Keep in mind, taxloss harvesting only applies to taxable investment accounts, and the strategy requires attention to detail. However, it may be worth it to consider. When we lower our taxable consequence, it’s helps our overall return.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION

Charitable-minded taxpayers over the age of 70½ who are financially comfortable and do not need their required minimum distribution (RMD) to meet their living needs have another strategy available to them. These investors may be able to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from their traditional IRAs directly to a nonprofit organization. This move satisfies their annual IRA (RMD) obligations and avoids income tax on the transferred amounts to non-profits. Keep in mind, QCD transfers will not qualify for a charitable deduction on your tax return, the benefit is that no one pays any taxes on the amount

donated if it goes directly from your IRA to the charity. A word to the wise; taxpayers should be aware of specific rules prohibiting making QCDs to donor advised funds or private foundations or from SEP IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs or 401(k) plans.

“BUNCHING” CHARITABLE DONATIONS The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) passed at the end of 2017, brought about some of the most comprehensive changes in tax law that we have seen in decades.

From a tax planning perspective, due to the substantial increase in the standard deduction, a larger percentage of individuals no longer itemize on their tax returns. For those who are right on the cusp of benefiting from itemization – $12,000 (single) or $24,000 (married filing jointly) – there is still one tax planning strategy surrounding charitable contributions that could produce a benefit. Bunching or bundling of itemized deductions is where a taxpayer chooses to “bunch” donations to charities in a specific year while limiting donations in the subsequent year(s). Essentially, the taxpayer gives the same amount to charity annually; however, the timing of when they chose to take the tax deduction(s) allows them to benefit by “bunching” multiple years’ worth of gifts into one tax year’s return to get that itemization number above the standard deduction.

If any of the above the strategies sounds like something that could help your situation, I urge you to have a discussion with your financial and tax professionals, as this information is not intended to be a substitute for specific individualized tax advice. While these strategies may not be any help with your 2019 situation, perhaps one or more will help you save money on this year’s tax return.

Valentine Kindness Challenge

Over

the years, we’d read about numerous types of “challenges.” The “Polar Bear and Ice Bucket Challenge” is often too cold an endeavor to attempt! The “Hot Pepper Challenge” is, without question, too hot! Perhaps something just right can be found in the arrival of a new movement encouraging us to act with deliberate kindness and purpose. In 2019, the “Great Kindness Challenge” (GKC), reached over 24,000 schools across 110 countries around the globe, impacting over 13 million students. Through its credo, it defines the attributes of kindness: “As kindness chips away at indifference and apathy; kindness creates change. As kindness encounters callousness and cruelty, kindness creates calm.

Kindness can help us form the relationships we want with the people we want in a world that makes us proud.” In this month of love and friendship, participants should: ready your smiles, become observers, and continue lifting spirits and filling the world with joy!

SCHOOL SPIRIT The “Spreading Kindness Campaign” challenges local school leaders and teachers to implement a culture of kindness, emphasizing the theme “Everyone Belongs.”

Elementary teacher Kathleen Rosenthal writes, “Before we implemented the GKC, we did tend to see some behavioral issues among students. Some of our students struggled with communication and problem-solving challenges. But making kindness more of a focus in our teaching—not just during the GKC week but throughout the year—has really lifted them. We see so much less irritable behavior, and the children can relate to one another better.

We champion empathy, and challenge students to always think and imagine how their friends and fellow students are feeling. We teach them selfaccountability and encourage them to be leaders in both spreading the kindness and also being kind to themselves.”

CREATIVE IDEAS TO PROMOTE KINDNESS Starting a GKC month does not take preparation. Children are creative and full of surprising ideas to help classmates, the school community, adults, and the town. Allow children to brainstorm ideas. One good deed daily is the requirement; however, in this form of endeavor, over-achievers engaging in multiple positive acts will encourage others to think, observe, and respond with kindness. Teachers or families may want to create a 28-day challenge workbook or journal.

A FEW SUGGESTIONS ARE: • Write letters to an admired person, noting positive qualities and offering friendship.

• Create “kind message bookmarks,” using quotes from historical figures, such as Aesop, Dr. Seuss, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Booker T. Washington, the Dalai Lama, and Mother Teresa. At the library, children can also insert a bookmark in their favorite book to offer thoughtfulness to a stranger!

• Establish a station for children to write kindness notes.

• Participate in a painted rock project and find the ideal location for placement.

• Send letters or pictures to people or children in need, who may be in a nursing home or hospital.

• Decide upon a class project within the community. A few suggestions are: picking up trash or planting a tree.

RACHEL’S CHALLENGE On April 20th, 1999, Rachel Joy Scott was the first casualty in the school shooting at Columbine High School. The friends of Rachel imparted wonderful stories that described her simple acts of kindness. To spread awareness of Rachel’s story and influence, an organization began to promote a positive school climate, reduce violence, and prevent bullying. Today, many schools, including those in Forsyth County, support the message behind’s Rachel’s Challenge.

Annually, Forsyth County schools present “Spirit of Rachel Awards” to students in elementary, middle, and high school. The recipient exemplifies qualities based on five challenges: To see the good in others, dream big, choose positive influences, speak with kindness, and initiate a positive chain reaction.

“Challenges” can inspire new ideas and the goal to become a better person!

This February, promise to take the 28-day initiative and integrate it into 365 days!

Heart of the Matter

Trusted Care Keeps Go-Getter Going Strong Wendy Rash, a self-described “go-getter,” is no stranger to heart surgery. The Lewisville resident has had a number of procedures over the years to address her irregular heartbeat.

Now in her late 40s and on her third pacemaker, she has trusted her heart care to Wake Forest Baptist Health for more than 20 years. She has worked with the health system since the early 1990s, first as a nursing assistant and later as a flight nurse on the AirCare helicopter crew for about 20 years. She’s now a nurse practitioner in interventional radiology and still works with AirCare.

When she was diagnosed in 2018 with a heart valve that needed repair, she chose to have minimally invasive open-heart surgery, which was performed by Drs. Ted Kincaid, Tony Simmons and Patrick Whalen.

She chose that surgery because of its shorter recovery time. She knows Wake Forest Baptist offers the full range of cardiovascular care, from preventive to advanced and everything in between, and she understands what it means to provide the best care.

She says her background in medicine helped her grasp the importance of choosing a care team with specialized training who teach that care to others.

“I knew the Heart and Vascular Center was well-established and worked to build excellent relationships with their patients, and I knew the doctors would put my best interests first,” says Wendy, who first experienced heart issues in her mid-20s and got her first pacemaker at 31.

When she learned one of her heart valves would need to be replaced within months, she wanted to take care of it sooner rather than later.

“Mostly because of my activity level and the things that I do—lifting, chasing after my two dogs—I felt like I would have a better recovery path with minimally invasive surgery,” she says.

Her surgery was a success, and her follow-up treatment, from intensive care to the cardiac floor and through cardiac rehabilitation, exceeded her expectations.

“They were compassionate and understanding, yet pushed me to get up and out of bed when I didn’t think I could,” she says. “They have been amazing every step of the way. I owe them everything!”

Her recovery was exactly what she had hoped for—she was back at work 2½ weeks after surgery. She feels 100 percent better, with no symptoms, a higher energy level, increased endurance and no limitations.

“I wish I had done it sooner,” Wendy says.

“You don’t realize how bad you feel until you feel a whole lot better.”

PREVENTIVE CARDIOLOGY: AN EMERGING SUBSPECIALTY Signs of cardiovascular disease — the world’s leading cause of death — often go undetected until it is too late. A new center at Wake Forest Baptist Health, dedicated to the emerging subspecialty of preventive cardiology, aims to make a difference.

“Only half of people are fortunate enough to have signs and symptoms that suggest that they may have underlying cardiovascular disease before they have a catastrophic event,” says Michael D. Shapiro, DO, MCR, a board-certified cardiologist who is directing Wake Forest Baptist Health’s new Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease.

“The other half actually have a major event, such as heart attack or sudden cardiac death, as their first sign or symptom.”

Preventive cardiologists can evaluate apparently healthy individuals for their risk of heart disease and identify some of the earliest signs and/or risk for cardiovascular disease.

“We actually have good tools to do that now,” Shapiro says. Those tools include a range of new technology and diagnostic methods, such as advanced cardiac imaging, cuttingedge laboratory testing and genetics.

Preventative Cardiology: An Emerging Subspecialty For women, Shapiro says there are several facts they should be aware of: • Heart disease is not a “man’s disease.” It kills 10 times as many women as breast cancer.

• At menopause, the risk for heart disease goes up for women and approaches that of men.

• Women sometimes have atypical symptoms, not necessarily the classic ones. These need to be evaluated by a provider to make sure they are not indicative of heart disease.

• Screening for early heart disease with imaging, such as a coronary artery calcium score, is just as effective in women as it is in men.

He says many deaths attributable to cardiovascular disease are easily preventable.

“If you can find who is at risk and you can offer them good options, both in terms of lifestyle changes and medical treatment,” Shapiro says, “it can go a long way toward preventing a lot of misery down the road.”

Senior Prom: Complete Practical Suggestions for Staging the Junior-Senior Prom.

By the 1950s, with the boost in the economy post-war, high school proms progressed from gymnasiums to more lavish venues, like banquet halls and country clubs.

Then, the elaborate prom dress shopping experience was initiated, and embellished prom corsages were introduced. By the late 1980s, high school prom became about as modernized as it is today, and a far cry from its humble beginnings.

Prom is an American tradition that grants high school students the chance to live out a fairytale evening. However, did you know that this iconic night of dancing was originally meant solely for universities? So, how did it get passed down to high schools?

Prom was initially short for promenade. This French-origin word essentially means the formal introductory of guests. Back in the mid-1800s, northeastern American universities introduced “prom” as an event to celebrate the social etiquette and manners of upper-level classmates, more specifically, the graduating class. The selected students would proudly walk across campus in celebration of their achievements and to reveal their knowledge of etiquette to other students.

The earliest historical reference to prom was documented in the diary entry of a male student at Amherst College. In 1894, this student detailed his invitation to experience prom at the nearby women’s university, Smith College. However, it wasn’t until Ivy League schools transformed the concept of prom into “Presentation Week” that the event became ever so popular. At the end of each Presentation Week, the university would hold an evening of celebration complemented by formal attire and dancing to the university’s band.

By the early 1900s, the upper-class society parents and educators conjured up the thought of a heavily chaperoned formal dinner and dance to instill social politeness and etiquette in the younger adults. Similar to the original idea, high school prom was held for the senior class, in which they would wear their “Sunday best.” By the 1930s, high school prom was being held nationwide and became as iconic to Americans as apple pie. From vibrant paper streamers to lively dinners boosted with music by local bands, Americans were tickled with this new event. In 1936, the first guide to planning prom was published, The Junior-

Fun fact: Do you know where the grandest prom venue of all time was held? Susan Ford, the only daughter of 38th President, Gerald Ford, hosted her Holton-Arms High School senior prom in the East Room at the White House in 1975. The event was covered by The Washington Post and People magazine. She was the first and only First Kid to this day to hold this honor. While almost all parents were imploring officials to be designated chaperones, the President and First Lady were called away to an important European diplomatic mission.

By the early 2000s, prom became solely designated for high schools, as it hit its peak in the media. Producers began capturing and re-enacting the stereotypical prom moments. These prom-centric movies hyped up the fairytale of prom even more, as Pretty in Pink, Mean Girls, and She’s All That were released. Then, the same young adults began to cultivate good media of their own, as they happily brought along a grandparent who had missed their own prom because they were off at war or too poor to attend, as their date. These sweet young adults are a reminder of what prom was originally about—celebrating the etiquette of the students.

From humble beginnings to elaborate venues, prom has been completely transformed over the past few decades.

Getting the perfect dress, picking the right hairstyle, coordinating the details with your friends and, of course, planning what you will do that night after Prom is over. Really, the after-party is one of the best parts. This is a time you can relax and enjoy spending time with your closest group of friends, doing something really memorable. If you haven’t thought too much about it yet, don’t worry. Here a few great ideas to make your afterparty something special.

Karaoke Party Everyone loves karaoke. What better way to spend the night after Prom than singing your heart out with your friends? This can be a part of any party or a theme for the party itself. No matter what, it will be really fun.

Day School in Winston-Salem has continued to grow its student body, adding a preschool class and a kindergarten class before the start of the 2019-20 school year, and welcoming these new students to campus.

“Calvary Day School set a record this year by having its highest student enrollment in school history, with more than 760 students making Calvary their choice for education,” said CDS Head of School Richard Hardee. “We are excited about this development and look forward to continued growth as we move into the 2020-2021 school year, Calvary Day’s 50th year!”

Hardee said the school leaders are preparing for the future of CDS and looking forward to embracing new families and students at CDS. “While we welcome prospective families to visit our school at any time, we have scheduled the following dates for Admissions Open House sessions: February 25th and April 15th for K-12 and March 10th for our preschool,” Hardee said.

Admissions Director Becky Wood said she is also excited about the school’s growth and new faces in the school family.

just a couple of months, Harvard Professor and America’s premier social capital expert, Dr. Robert Putnam, will return to Forsyth County to show us what we can learn from the past century and how we can turn the corner for the well-being of all of our children.

“We are not making use of the full potential of all of our children,” Family Services CEO Bob Feikema said. “People from all walks of life—all political parties, all ages—are really recognizing the value of high-quality early education.”

Putnam was the inaugural speaker for Family Services’ Raising Every Child enefit uncheon in 201 , so it’s only fitting that he return to see the progress we’ve made during the last four years.

Since that time, Family Services has invited other influential outside voices to the conversation, including Billionaire philanthropist George Kaiser in 2017, who told local leaders how Oklahoma introduced Universal Pre-K. Later that same year, during the second annual Raising very Child enefit uncheon, eoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children’s Zone in Harlem, NY, taught a soldout crowd at the Benton Convention Center that “what happens by age 5 lasts a lifetime.”

When Putnam spoke four years ago, his message was a call to action.

“We cannot afford to throw away nearly one-third of our smartest kids just because they happen to have parents who make less income,” he said, as he presented his revolutionary research on the “opportunity gap.”

It was just a year prior to Putnam’s arrival that Harvard University released a groundbreaking and eye-opening study that found Forsyth County, North Carolina, was among the worst counties in the nation for helping poor children escape poverty. In other words, the ZIP code you were born into was the single biggest factor in determining your future income.

Two years before Putnam’s initial address, Family Services and other local early childhood professionals were already hard at work exploring how to improve both quality and capacity for local preschoolers in Forsyth County.

And last year, Family Services invited Duke University researcher Kenneth A. Dodge, who pioneered a definitive study that showed that the more money North Carolina puts into high-quality Pre-K, the better North Carolina children will fare.

Putnam’s return comes five years after amily Services and others began work on addressing the county’s Pre-K deficiency, and one year after the official launch of the Pre-K Priority initiative, which is a coalition of community organizations and individuals committed to improving the number of affordable, high-quality Pre-K programs available to all fouryear-olds in Forsyth County.

are the essence of any community. They bring joy to our lives and provide hope for a brighter future. However, there are some children that have needs that only a community can fill. Children who are unable to live safely in their homes, for whatever reason, often end up being a part of the foster care system.

It is a difficult time for them, but a community that is prepared to support them can make all the difference.

In our community, we have a foster care crisis. There is not enough community support and there are not enough families trained and licensed to care for the foster children in our community. Crossnore School & Children’s Home is working hard to change that, because they understand that this community crisis will take a community response.

Crossnore, a non-profit child welfare agency, is dedicated to its mission, which is to grow healthy futures for children and families by providing a Christian sanctuary of hope and healing. And they take that very seriously.

In addition to residential services, they also provide community-based foster care and adoption services, outpatient therapy, education, and school-based clinical services.

For them, it is about child welfare and behavioral health support to achieve their goal of creating hope and healing for children in crisis.

Crossnore provides foster homes for children in two ways. They have residential cottages and they also work with licensed community foster homes.

The cottages are often used to provide space for larger sibling groups and children with particular needs that need to be met. The licensed community foster homes are homes in the community where families bring children into their own homes. They are always recruiting foster families, because there is a great need for these families in our community.

Local foster parent Christine recently started fostering after having four years as an empty-nester. “My home, my life, and my heart definitely had more love, nurturing, and affection to give.” She understands that it is a big commitment and she’s emotionally involved. She went on to say, “Think about

when your kids were little. Imagine something unexpected or extreme happening to your family and imagine your kid(s) being alone in the back seat of a car with strangers. What kind of home do you want them in until you can get everything straightened out? That is why I am doing this. These precious kids deserve to feel safe and loved.”

When a family is interested in becoming a foster family, Crossnore can play a role in that, too. They work with families to provide the training, licensure, and support they need by offering the necessary classes, as well as walking them through the process of becoming licensed by the state. Classes are provided at the Crossnore campus as well as in the community.

They partner with churches and community programs to make these classes convenient and accessible to everyone.

A little over a year ago, Crossnore started a program, funded by the Duke Endowment, called Fostering Communities. This three-year initiative will take the idea of foster families caring for children in crisis and change that to a fostering community that supports foster children and the families that care for them. Foster families take on a great responsibility and the goal is to focus on supporting the child, while the community rallies around them to help them achieve that goal.

Sarah Norris, Crossnore Child Welfare Director, said, “The truth is that we need to look at this foster care crisis as a community and realize that there is a role we can all play in being a part of the solution. If you feel called to foster children in your home, we really need you. Or if you feel your role is one that would be more aligned with supporting the families that foster children, we need you, too. Some people foster to adopt; others are career foster parents. Your role does not have to look a certain way. It is just so important that, as a community, we all work together to make a difference in the lives of these children.”

There is always a need for foster families in our community.

There is a greater need for families willing to take in teenage children and to assist children who need therapeutic care. What impact can we see locally on programs and initiatives?

Right here in Winston-Salem, there are different subcommittees through the Complete Count Committee (CCC), covering everything from public workforce and transportation to non-profits and higher education. These individuals span from government officials to civilians. ach subcommittee may be addressing a different angle, but all understand the importance of knowing our city’s numbers. overnment officials will be taking this information to make choices about schools, hospitals, public safety, housing, transportation, healthcare, employment, and even public policy. When funding is received or, unfortunately, cut, even the smaller things like pothole-covered roads are affected.

the last few years, our country has seen an incredible movement of citizens getting more involved in their communities, like a wave of passion rising. Here in Forsyth County, there are so many different causes to be passionate about and changes to support. Imagine if 10 minutes of your time could make a genuine impact on something you truly cared about Every ten years, the Census records every resident living in the United States, and you guessed it—it’s that time again! Beginning April 1st, 2020, the Census Bureau will send out questionnaires across the nation and you will soon have an opportunity to take part and be counted.

So, why should you care?

While it may seem like just a number, your count is worth so much more. This year, the U.S. Census ureau wants you to know that everyone counts! The community you hold near and dear to you will be critically affected by the outcome of the data received, as it directly coordinates to billions of dollars in federal funding allocated for local and long-term usage across each state. Additionally, it affects representation and redistricting for state and national congressional seats.

Think of the Census results as the proof of the pudding of what our community needs!

Regardless of what you like or dislike about your city, funding is involved in nearly every single one of them. A simple way to think about how the Census count translates directly is in terms of dollars—dollars for you, your community, and important causes. Without accurate data, Forsyth County can lose out on funding for critical programs that sustain our community, such as the Department of Social Services, Food and utrition Services program, and more.

Exactly how much effort are we talking about?

This is not your grandma’s census! The 2020 Census will be more accessible than ever with its exciting ump into the twenty-first century by going digital.

You will have the option this year to head online to fill out the seven- uestion survey and in less than one minute be counted. Census-mailers begin going out mid-March, and you’ll have the ability to respond as soon as you receive yours, and be able to find online access instructions as well. You can also locate local Recreation Centers or Branch Libraries to take the Census on-line, for those who wish to, but don’t have Internet access. If you prefer to fill yours out in person, you still have the option to be greeted by an official Census Taker to complete your survey or answer right over the phone. Additionally, the 2020 Census will offer questionnaire assistance available in 12 non-English languages, as well as provide Bilingual (English and Spanish) materials to make sure everyone can take part.

How else can you help make the Census a success?

Outside of taking the Census yourself, you can share the importance and impact with your friends and neighbors. This is the perfect time to encourage each other and remind them that their life counts and can make a difference in their community! Over the decades of the U.S. Census being conducted, there are historically undercounted communities, such as immigrants, children under the age of six years, and the homeless population. While the Forsyth County Complete Count Committee (FCCCC) is making every effort to help improve counting these members, your effort makes a difference.

What is Love, Anyway?

love is a complicated task. Love as a noun can mean deep affection, great pleasure, benevolence, or emotional attachment.

Love as a verb can be used to mean devote, cherish, revere, or desire intensely. We use the word love to describe a vast variety of emotions and attitudes toward people, spouses, siblings, friends, children, as well as to activities, foods, and events, etc. But the uestion we are asking here is to define what we all seek in life: long-lasting, abiding, unconditional love of another person, be it a romantic love, a familial love, or a love between friends. ow then, do we define this so soughtafter emotional state of love? Perhaps we strive to understand love because it is an emotion that we do not control. We do not automatically love those in our lives.

We don’t always get to choose whom we love or who will love us in return.

When we feel deep love for someone, we experience a complicated release of chemicals in the brain, thus driving us to express and experience that love in a variety of powerful ways.

When love is valued, it is allowed to mature into a state of appreciation,

affection, and tolerance of the imperfections of another. As true love grows, it can develop into the ultimate love of another person known as unconditional love. Unconditional love is that which is freely given without expectation of return, without judgment, without reservation and with no demand for perfection. Unconditional love is the single most important component for the success of a truly committed relationship, whether it is between two married people “forsaking all others” for a lifetime of companionship, or a lasting bond of love between parent and child. Another way to describe unconditional love is to discern the difference between loving someone for what they can do for you, or loving someone for who they are.

When we can love others for who they are, long-lasting and rewarding relationships, filled with compatibility, can thrive. A loving relationship between romantic partners can bring great fulfillment and happiness. A Guide to Valentine’s Day Surprises

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate your loved ones, as well as brighten someone’s day who may be a little lonely. Follow along this short guide to Valentine’s Day surprises to catch those dazzling smiles.

FOOD Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to add all your favorite berries to your grocery list.

Whether you save this easy breakfast idea for this weekend’s brunch or Valentine’s Day morning, a scrumptious DIY waffle bar will have your family eager to dig on in. Begin by simply making your favorite waffles. To be more festive, try slicing them into heart-shapes or use a heart-shaped waffle maker.

Then, place little bowls of your favorite toppings. For example, try adding red raspberries, sliced bananas, dark mini-chocolate chips, chopped pecans, freshly whipped cream, maple syrup, Nutella, almond butter, and cinnamon to your DIY waffle bar.

For dinner, try pairing together browned chicken thighs with couscous and roasted whole carrots. Begin by seasoning the chicken thighs with salt & pepper, then cook each (skin side down) in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high for 6-8 minutes, until golden brown. Add carrots into the

skillet and roast at 450F until chicken is cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the couscous according to its package directions.

Toss the couscous with a little lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, fresh mint and parsley, salt and pepper. Complement this delectable dish with the refreshing blend of fresh mint, chopped garlic, and roasted pumpkin seeds. Serve warm.

Winston-Salem Arts Organizations Announce Communitywide Celebration of Beethoven in 2020

30 arts organizations in WinstonSalem are coming together this year in an unusual collaboration to celebrate the 2 0th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Beethoven Rocks Winston-Salem is part of a worldwide effort to recognize the contributions of Beethoven to music and art in its many forms. The efforts are led by the city of Bonn, Germany, which has a 36 -day program of Beethoven-related events on its cultural calendar.

The Winston-Salem events series was recently announced at a press conference at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts. Winston-Salem is believed to be the first North Carolina city to announce a series of major events to celebrate Beethoven.

“This collaboration is a grassroots effort that brings people together who are involved in every aspect of the arts in our community, including music, film, dance and literature,” said Mary Beth Johnson, one of the organizers of the effort and chief operating officer for the Winston-Salem Symphony.

“We’re still hearing from groups, and even businesses, that have heard about our plans and want to get involved,” Johnson said.

To help publicize the series, Mercedes-Benz of Winston-Salem has stepped in as the presenting sponsor. In addition to being the 2 0th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, 2020 also is the 0th anniversary of Mercedes-Benz of Winston-Salem.

David Neill, president of the company, said he was looking for a project that would benefit the community as a way to celebrate that milestone.

“The arts are an important part of our city’s history, and we are excited to see so many different arts organizations getting involved in this collaboration,” Neill said. “We’re helping by pulling all of these events under one umbrella and boosting their exposure to help reach a wider audience. This collaboration could be a new model for how arts programming is delivered in our city.”

The first event, Beethoven’s Liederabend, was held January 16 at Wake Forest University. It featured Steven Scheschareg, a classical artist from Vienna, Austria, and Peter Kairoff, chair and professor from the Wake Forest University Department of Music.

Organizations in addition to Wake Forest University that have events planned in 2020 include a perture cinema, Arts Based School, Arts Council of Winston-Salem Forsyth County, Authoring Action, Bookmarks, Camel City Jazz Orchestra, Centenary United Methodist Church, Mitchell’s Piano Gallery, Moravian Music Foundation, Music Carolina, North Carolina Brass Band, Piedmont Music Center, Piedmont Opera, Piedmont Wind Symphony, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, RiverRun International Film Festival, Salem Band, Salem College, Sawtooth School for Visual Art, SECCA, Secrest Artists Series, Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Wake Forest University Department of Music, Wake Forest University Lifelong Learning Programs, Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department, Winston-Salem State University, the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus.

Plans call for at least one event to be scheduled each month of 2020, said James Allbritten, the director of Piedmont Opera.

“As arts organizations, we often find ourselves competing for attention and audiences,” he said. “But Beethoven Rocks Winston-Salem brings us all together to share our admiration for Beethoven and to recognize his enduring legacy.”

All are good options; but, if you want to think out of that heart-shaped box and your valentine loves animals almost as much as they love you, consider a gift or an experience that will involve a furry friend for the day.

Spend the Day with Your Love and Your Pet This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday, so imagine the fun you and your significant other could have spending the day with your own pet. You can get a bit more imaginative with a dog, perhaps dropping by the dog park, going for a long walk, or just spending the day kicked back and relaxing.

There are many shopping areas that allow pets to accompany you, so get that “Honey Do” list done with your pup by your side.

An ongoing need on a global scale is the devastation in Australia to the wildlife. Rescues are being overrun with taking in kangaroos, koalas, as well as other animals whose numbers have been decimated by the wildfires.

There are many legitimate sites to donate funds to help those animals affected in Australia. By doing an online search, you can find ways to make a difference on a bigger scale.

Making this Valentine’s Day extra special doesn’t require a trip to the jewelry store or florist when you can show your love for your sweetie by thinking out of the box and showing them that one of the things you love about them is their love for animals.

They, too, have a proactive method of preventing fires, while promoting the growth of flora and the return of fauna. Through a yearlong effort of long meetings, walking, and preparing the land, the reward is for all to see in the spring, summer, and fall.

The goal of the Forest Service is to spread the word and encourage individuals and families to understand why prescribed burns are beneficial to the environment, especially the Piedmont woodlands.

Process of Scheduling a Burn Day “Prescribed burns” occur on a rotational calendar scheduled every three to four years. The NC Forest Service focuses on prescribed burning on private and state lands, and parks.

District Forester Mark Bost writes, “Our burning program in Surry County has increased to 10 to 1 burn units a year for almost 0 acres. Prescribed burning is a long process of planning, which involves a detailed understanding of the property. We look at the problematic areas, such as fuel areas with debris and slopes, and its terrain. Once we write a prescription based on the specific objectives, we look at logistics.” When burning in Stokes County, County Ranger Johnathan Young times prescribed burns by checking the wind speed, humidity, and atmospheric lift to provide a minimal impact on populated areas.

Young also coordinates a team by determining who can fulfill specific and essential qualifications.

The Timeline is Three Hours Preparedness is the key to a successful burn. Months prior, men and women remove flammable threats by raking or blowing excess leaves away from the fire line. Once the perimeter receives one additional treatment for final preparation, the time arrives. Typically starting at noon, fire personnel, which may include help from adjacent counties, stand ready. The burn continues until the sun begins to drop. Bulldozers with fire plows, helicopters, fire engines, and other equipment are often used to assist. Within hours, the once enflamed land emits long spirals of smoke skyward. And, for those close by to witness the aftereffects, the beauty comes at night. Small flickering lights appear scattered throughout the mountain, like windows of a village alive and well. re on

Focusing On Your Marriage When You Have Children

are so many great things about being married.

Finding a person you want to share your life with is a very special thing. It is wonderful to feel loved and to be able to share the love you have with someone else. It is also something that has to be nurtured and takes work to keep healthy. That is hard enough on its own, but when you add in the extra element of kids, it gets a little more complicated.

Being a parent is the greatest joy you can experience. It is also the hardest work you will ever do. It takes a lot of time and can be very emotionally and physically exhausting. When you become a parent, it often makes you put everything else in your life on the back burner. Including your marriage. Unfortunately, that can make your marriage more difficult and put a wall up between you and your spouse. Most people don’t do this intentionally, but it tends to happen to the best of us.

It is really important to keep a focus on your marriage after you have children. Ultimately you can be the most effective parents when your marriage is strong and you are able to work together as a team. A healthy marriage also sets a good example to your children of the way they should be treated in the relationships they will encounter in their own lives.

Now, if you are a new parent, don’t get discouraged too quickly.

The first year of parenting is totally about surviving. You are sleep-deprived and emotional. Just remember to lean on your spouse for support and not hold grudges. As long as you are both doing the best you can during that first year, that is enough.

As time goes on, you really need to make time for each other. It is so important to have time away from your children to help you

reconnect and remember why you love each other. This can be complicated for some parents if you don’t have a trusted person to leave your children with, or financial constraints keep you from date nights out. The truth is, there are a million ways to do this with any amount of time or budget.

Date nights are a great way to reconnect, and all it takes is staying up a little later than normal. Feed the kids, get them to bed, and let the fun begin. Cook a special meal together, watch a show or movie you both enjoy, or just share some wine and good conversation. Try to switch the focus to your lives and away from what the kids are up to. Finding a way to make this happen weekly, or even monthly, will make a big difference in how you connect to your spouse.

If you have to opportunity to get away for the weekend, just the two of you, take it! A weekend without the kids really takes the pressure off and allows you the chance to reconnect. It also is a great time to talk about the plans you have for your life and family without distraction. It is so hard to talk about the things that really matter when you are busy with the kids, work, and all the activities going on. Setting aside a weekend to do something fun together feels like fuel for a marriage. It will allow you to keep moving through life just a little easier.

It is so important to remember that, even though you are parents, you are two people who fell in love and decided to join your lives together. That is really special. Taking time, no matter how much, to be together and enjoy that love will keep your marriage healthy. It will also go a long way to making you better parents, too.

Often when your children are young, they have a hard time expressing their feelings and emotions, and it leads to a lot of times when you need to discipline them. One very popular choice for dealing with discipline for young children is time-out.

Time-out is a common technique used to discipline a child. It is very simple and effective. When a child is displaying undesirable behavior, you put them in time-out by removing them from what they are doing and have them sit in a quiet space. Maybe in a corner or chair facing the wall, but in a place where there are no toys or things to distract them. They are usually asked to stay there for however many minutes as they are old. This is a disciplinary action meant to teach them that the behavior is unacceptable.

Mediation is also a form of time out. It is the act of sitting in a quiet, peaceful place to clear the mind and feel peace. It is much more often used by adults to help them restore a sense of calm to their lives and reduce stress. The self-reflection they can experience during meditation is also found to be very useful.

Thinking about a way to use mediation and time-out to work together can be an effective way to take these moments where discipline is necessary and use it as a way to teach the child a lifelong skill. Even though they are young, children can begin to understand the importance of self-reflection. Really, when a child is presenting with behavior that is unacceptable, they are feeling stress. So this is a perfect time to introduce the idea of meditation and teach them to restore calm and reduce that stress.

If you are already using Time-Out as a form of discipline, you are halfway there. Your child is already accustomed to being removed from a stressful situation. The difference will be what you ask of them once they are in time-out. It may also be helpful to change the name from “time-out” to “time-away.” This will change the tone of the experience and let them know that it will be different from what they were doing before.

The most important first step is to talk to your child about how the

new time-out will work before the heat of the moment. Once your child is having an issue, it will be hard to convey what you want them to do. Have an age-appropriate conversation when everyone is feeling good.

As for the meditation itself, start small. You will need to sit with your child at first to help him or her through the exercise. Have them take deep breaths with your guidance. Once they are calm, you can keep it as simple as having eyes closed and breathing, or as complex as having them focus on the feeling that made them upset, and moving those feelings to the side to think about a more positive feeling.

There is a range of options to use for this exercise. There are also resources available on the Internet and you can even find guided meditation videos for children. Do some research and you will easily be equipped to make this a positive experience in your home.

A lot of parents are already using time-out in their homes every day.

Adding the element of meditation will help your child add a tool to their tool belt that can help them deal with their emotions. It can become a lifelong skill that teaches them to remove themselves from a stressful situation to clear their mind and gather themselves.

We could all use a little more of that in our lives!

you standing in the middle of a genre box, feeling that the book jackets covering the walls are too high to climb out? Yes, we all find comfort in particular familiar adventures. The scenes of murder, mystery, and suspense span from Margery Allingham to Patricia Cornwell and down the alphabet to Minette Walters. By having a preference, the investment of time and dedication elevates our ability to categorically assess a long list of writers according to style, story, and characters. You are, most likely, a proud die-hard “pro” during “Mystery Fiction” chat sessions! But outside of the number-two most-read genre above, you can also find page-turners among science fiction, historical fiction, horror, or fantasy novels. It’s time to consider embarking on new adventures!

Author suggestion: on the number-three list of most read genres are motivational publications! a part of a community is a very special part of the human experience. It provides us with people to love and a sense of belonging. It also comes with the understanding that there are people in every community who have unmet needs. If you find yourself in a position where your basic needs are met, and you have something to share, that can benefit your community greatly.

Adults find this very easy to understand. But for children, it can be a little more complex. It’s really a parent’s responsibility to help children understand the needs of their community and how they can help. Also important is to teach them to appreciate what they have, and how being fortunate is a gift. This opens the door to a life of understanding the importance of giving back.

The big question for some parents is, how do you teach your child to give back? There are so many ways you can open this conversation. It will also change as your children grow. What is appropriate for teenagers may not be for smaller children. You just want to make sure you are having this conversation and being an example of how to help others in need.

Here are a few ideas of ways you can show your children different ways to give back. u Time is something that anyone can give, and it doesn’t cost a thing. There are a lot of organizations that can use your family’s time to help them out. Do some research and find a cause your family is interested in and plan to give it a try. You can do a variety of things, from helping build a home to packing food for children overseas, and lots of things in-between. There are some age restrictions and commitment requirements for a few organizations, so just keep that in mind.

If you give your child an allowance, consider teaching them to give a percentage to charity. Give them the freedom to think about what organization they would like it to go to, and support their choice. You may even think about matching their donation. u B When birthdays and holidays roll around, it’s a great time to teach your child to give some of their under-used toys to a child who could really love them. This can be really hard for children, but it is important to help them understand how blessed they are and how their giving could really brighten another child’s day.

This is great because you can start doing this when they are very young, and it will become something they are prepared to do throughout the year. u

TALK ABOUT THOSE IN NEED AROUND THE WORLD

One of the best ways to help your children learn to give back is to be honest with them about people in need. Talk to then about the people around the world and in the community who are in need. It will give them an understanding of what they should be grateful for and why it is important to give back. You don’t have to go too deep with young children, but you can talk about this in age-appropriate ways. You might be surprised about the empathy they show to others.

Giving back is a really important life lesson we should all be thinking about when it comes to raising our children. Teaching all children to give back to our community and to those around the world who are in need can only help our world become a better place.

Men Who Cook For

the SECU Family House, saying that there are “too many cooks in the kitchen” is GREAT news when it comes to their annual “Men Who Cook” fundraiser.

Celebrating its th anniversary this year, Men Who Cook is set for Saturday, March 21st, at Bridger Field House in Winston-Salem. The event brings together local male amateur chefs and their cooking teams who engage in a friendly but spirited kitchen competition to please the likes of nearly 400 hungry attendees of the event.

Participating chefs come from all sectors of the Winston-Salem community, from banking to clergy, lawyers to realtors, higher education to local media, and everything in between.

“Men Who Cook has become a mainstay event for our house,” said Kathy Carr, Executive Director of SECU Family House. “We love that this event has become so beloved in our community. No lengthy speeches or long presentations—just great food and wonderful people coming together to benefit our guest families. The Family House, which is conveniently located near Winston-Salem’s two major hospitals, has served as home base for folks from 9 North Carolina counties and 43 states and has welcomed more than 38,000 overnight guests since opening its doors in 2011. When families come to our area with their loved ones for medical treatment—whether planned or in emergency situations—the Family House provides a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere for rest, food, community, and more.

There is a small overnight fee for guests, but faithful donations and events like the Men Who Cook fundraiser help cover the majority of the costs it takes to operate the house 36 days a year.

Memorial Day weekend, The Winston-Salem Symphony hosted B la Fleck on Saturday, January 11th, for a concert featuring his Second Banjo Concerto, written for his son Juno. B la, a 1 -time Grammy-winning artist, joined Symphony-goers for a post-concert soirée at the home of Claire Randall Tuttle in downtown Winston-Salem. The event was an intimate, informational event to highlight the Symphony’s education programs, including its in-school education program, “PLAY Music,” where elementary school students learn to play violin free of charge. Tim Redmond, the Winston-Salem Symphony’s new Music Director, passionately shared the strength, power, and importance of music in the lives of children.

Guests enjoyed music by Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Orchestra musician Marissa Colter, a very successful young bluegrass fiddle player and her friend and guitarist Andrew Minor. In 201 , Marissa won first place in the Youth Bluegrass Fiddle category at the Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, the world’s largest event for old-time and bluegrass fiddlers. Last year, she placed in the top 10 in the adult division. She is a senior at West Forsyth High School and is planning on studying music performance in college.

Guests had a variety of toppings to choose from, namely tzatziki, feta olive compote, wasabi slaw, remoulade, pimento cheese, ketchup, mustard, and pickles. aren’t just for coloring anymore. They are also useful materials in creative and fun crafts that kids of all ages including adults can enjoy.

Whether they are melted or whole, crayons are versatile materials that can be made into slime, ornaments, and more, including these crafts. o

If you are planning on completing a DIY project with melted crayons, it is important to know how to safely melt the hot colored wax. There are a few common methods for doing so.

Crayons can be placed in an oven between 1 0 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit, no higher. Place them into a cupcake tin, onto a baking sheet, etc. and it should take about 1 -20 minutes for them to melt. uick tip: if you are molding the crayons into a certain shape, such as a heart, go ahead and place the crayon into the heart-shaped mold before putting it in the oven.

Use a hairdryer on the high setting. However, be aware that with this method, the wax will fly in many directions. Always hold the hairdryer about 3- ” from the crayons. You can also use the hairdryer to create a cool piece of artwork. Blow dry and melt the crayons into a certain pattern.

One favorite is to hot-glue the crayons in a line at the top of a canvas and melt the crayons, allowing the hot wax to run down the canvas.

In a microwave-safe container, break crayons into small pieces and microwave on high for about 1 to 2 minutes, stopping every 30 seconds to stir.

Create a double boiler with two pots, one inside the other and water in the bottom pot, or use an actual double boiler on the stovetop. Lay crayon pieces or shavings into the top pot and bring the water below to a boil. Stir occasionally and remove from heat once they have melted.

Arrange the crayons between two pieces of wax paper. With your iron on the lowest setting, melt the crayons with continuous movement of the iron. Check frequently to avoid burning.

MATERIALS: 2-3 chopped crayons 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 cup salt 2 cups flour 1 cup water DIRECTIONS: In a bowl, mix together the salt and flour. Set aside.

Pour the vegetable oil into a saucepan and place onto the stovetop with low heat. Add the chopped crayon pieces to the oil. Be careful not to let the oil get too hot. Slowly stir in the cup of water.

Continue stirring and add in the dry mixture of salt and flour. Stir until the dough begins to lump together.

Once done, remove dough onto parchment paper and cool.

Knead the dough until smooth.

Have fun with the salt dough mixture, creating fun shapes and designs with cookie cutters. Also, you can turn it into ornaments. All you need to do is add a hole for hanging at the top of your creation. Set your creations out to dry and harden for a few days and then you are all set.

DRIP ART MATERIALS: Hot glue gun Crayons A blank canvas DIRECTIONS: Remove the paper wrap from the

crayon. Place inside the hot glue gun as the glue stick. Allow the crayon to melt and soften.

Use the glue gun just as you normally do, and drip the melted crayon onto the canvas, creating the design of your choice.

Let the wax harden and dry.

MATERIALS: Broken crayons One soup bowl One flat bottomed ramekin or small dish Mod podge Paint brush DIRECTIONS: Add the crayons to the soup bowl and microwave for 2 minutes, checking on the crayons every 30 seconds to prevent them from burning.

Once the crayons have melted into liquid, remove from microwave and flatten by pushing the ramekin or small dish on top of them. Set aside to cool.

Once cool, remove the ramekin and pull off any excess crayon material that does not fit into the pattern.

Using the paint brush, cover the entire coaster with a thick coat of mod podge and let dry.

DIY projects are one of my favorite things to do, especially if they are completed with unique materials. A simple Pinterest or Internet search can reveal more crayon ideas, but these three are quick, easy, and enjoyable for everyone. Happy crafting!

The Argument – It’s Not Always How It Appears

I

took my dog for a walk one day at a park by a lake. After walking around the lake, it was such a nice day I decided to sit down on a bench under a shade tree beside the water to watch the ducks play. My dog sat beside me while I perused my cell phone for the latest news and information.

As I sat there, two young teenagers came walking along the path not far from me. They appeared to be in their later years of high school, since at least one of them had been driving.

They walked close enough to me that I felt the need to acknowledge them with a head bob, which I did. They were too engrossed in their intense conversation to notice, however, so I turned back toward the lake and continued looking at my phone.

As it turned out my intuition was correct. After hearing several more minutes of details from her about what he did all hearsay, I must admit, from his girlfriend , where he went with this other girl and how upset it made his girlfriend feel, he got up and said: “We need to go!” I presumed this meant to take her home.

As they walked a few feet past me, they stopped and sat down on the grass along the water’s edge. There were only one or two others present, and they were on the other side of the lake, unable to hear. The teens’ conversation, if normal, would have been too low for me to notice, but in this situation, that wasn’t the case. It appeared the young lady was upset with her boyfriend, a point I deciphered from their conversation. My intent was not to eavesdrop, but their conversation was so elevated and heated that I had no choice. I did give them the courtesy of not staring at them, but they paid no attention anyway.

As I watched this event unfold, I realized that only after the young man got up to leave in the end did he notice me sitting there the entire time. He appeared, as I imagined he would, quite embarrassed that his “personal business” had been put on public display. I could understand those feelings, as well; I could also understand his girlfriend’s hurt. It made me realize with even more clarity just how the older generation understands things so much more than young people realize. They feel embarrassed in the moment, not recognizing that in reality, the older folks watching have likely been on her or his side at one point themselves. These experienced adults see how things can happen, what precedes them and what options are available after the situation has occurred.

A lot can be learned seeking advice from these mature individuals, if only the young realized it. Yet, it’s not likely they ever will, until such day as they become a part of the older demographic. Their vision then becomes 20 20.

As I overheard the girl berate her beau for apparently going out with someone else, who undoubtedly talked about it with yet another person, who in turn relayed it back to the young lady who was now sitting near me, I could sense what I thought was about to take place. My guess from years of experience, albeit from long ago now, was that she would become angrier the longer she spoke with him after hearing his, in her opinion, lame excuse for what he had done. Then I suspected, feeling he was in a situation he couldn’t escape from with any sense of victory, that he would eventually get up and threaten to leave at worst , or simply take her home. At that point, if what I’d seen before in other scenarios not involving me, of course was any indication, she would begin to cry, and her emotions would unravel. He would become embarrassed further and want to leave that much faster, and then it would become ugly, at least until they got into their car and left.

And just as I anticipated, she began crying somewhat loudly, only to follow that up with walking along behind him, professing her love and demanding an explanation as to how he could have done this to her. It wasn’t pretty, but it could have been worse, I guess. Ultimately, they got in his car and left.

As for advice for the young couple, I think the great Bob Marley said it best. For the young man, “The biggest coward of a man is to awaken the love of a woman without the intention of loving her.” And as for the young lady, “The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just have to find the ones worth suffering for.”

I hope this young couple was able to resolve their differences in whatever way was best for them. I have a sense they did, and as proven, my senses are pretty good.

LOVE AND KINDNESS It’s

February; we have recovered from the holidays, have dealt with cold weather and possibly snow, and are ready for another day to lift our spirits and acknowledge our loved ones. Ah, Valentine’s Day— florists, candy makers, card shops, and jewelers, among others, look forward to this day.

As a child, after being back in school for a month and a half, we readied our decorated shoebox mailboxes to receive cards from our classmates—sometimes learning that the cute boy in class liked you. Our classroom was decorated with hearts, and our party kept with the theme of the day. My parents always had special gifts for my sister and me, and they exchanged presents with each other.

I will be the first to say it is wonderful to receive presents, but this past Christmas I was also reminded about the saying, “It is better to give than to receive.” Spending Christmas in Charlotte with our daughter’s family brought this adage to heart when we helped serve a group of homeless men at their church. In partnership with Urban Ministries, those who signed up were brought to the church. An abundance of food was provided by church members and local businesses.

With everything from appetizers to desserts, they were able to eat as much of whatever they chose. Two of my grandchildren and I found seats at a table and conversed with several of these men. My heart was warmed by listening to my twelve and eight-year-old grands politely answer and ask questions, taking a genuine interest in the conversations.

I could tell this simple act of kindness meant so much to these men.

Beds had been set up for the men to sleep at the church.

They were given towels and toiletries. Several volunteers had washed the feet of those who desired it. I noticed that there was a Christmas stocking on each bed. As we left, even though it was not late, a man was already fast asleep, comfortable with a full stomach and a warm, safe place to sleep. The kindness of strangers.

Now, here we are in February, and the “love” holiday is approaching. It is another opportunity to show our

grandchildren that random acts of kindness are things we can and should practice year-round, and not just when we are reminded by the ringing of a bell or because an advertisement tells us. I am not advocating our children talk to or interact with strangers without an adult family member present. Sadly, in this day and age, it isn’t a safe practice.

But, when we are out together, simple things such as holding open a door for someone, giving a smile, letting someone in front of you in line, giving a compliment, or just saying “hello” can mean the most to the person who receives it.

Showing and teaching them kindness can apply to their friends and classmates, as well. We remember seeing the kid eating alone and wish we had taken it upon ourselves to sit with them. It is a good conversation starter to ask them if they have noticed someone who might need a friend. One of our grandsons, when going to a playground, will immediately find another child to play with, and tell you about his new “friend,” even though, in all likelihood, he will never see the child again. However, their laughter while playing, and their smiles and waves goodbye, show that it meant something to have a friend at the time.

Whether we contribute tangible gifts to an organization, donate money to a favorite charity, pay it forward in any way, the random acts of kindness should become a part of our lives—not just at Christmas or other holidays. Our grandchildren are more observant than we often give them credit for. As adults, we have seen our fair share of rudeness and inconsideration. Hopefully, it will not come from our precious grands.

It’s

hard to believe Christmas was almost two months ago. Do you remember how you felt as you got ready for the special day?

Excited? Helpful? Did you feel sad when all the decorations were put away? Maybe you were a little angry because you didn’t get the present you asked for?

God made us to have all kinds of feelings. When do you feel happy? Are you ever bored? Do you pout when you don’t get your way? What are some other words that say how we feel?

Our feelings are real, but we don’t have to obey them. Here are some examples. Someone broke your new toy and you feel like bopping him or her in the nose. Should you do that? No, of course not! You got an “A” or a star on your homework and you feel proud and happy. You could brag about it and tell the other kids that they must not be very smart, but that wouldn’t be nice. Dad says you can’t go to your friend’s birthday party because the family already has plans for that day. Do you stomp your foot and shout, “I hate you!”? Oooh, I hope not.

Today’s verse calls our good feelings and actions “fruit.” And God wants good fruit! Which word tells you how to act instead of being mean? Can you find the “fruit” that is the opposite of hate? Can you be gentle with animals or kids younger than you? Don’t let bad or mean feelings be the boss.

Pray and ask God to grow good fruit in you. God’s kind of fruit makes life sweet!

Devotion: In the Seat Next to You

few years back, a woman named Patty Ris was enjoying a meal at the assisted living center where she lived when she began to choke on a piece of food. The gentleman sitting beside her was a retired physician, so he knew exactly what to do to help.

Immediately he stood her up, wrapped his arms around her mid-section, and, after a few upward thrusts with his fists, the food became dislodged.

It’s no surprise, really, that the man was so adept at performing the procedure that saved the woman’s life. After all, this wasn’t just any retired physician. It was renowned chest surgeon, Dr. Henry Heimlich... yes, that Dr. Heimlich.

After the incident, Patty wrote Dr. Heimlich a thank you note that read, in part, “God put me in this seat next to you.”

I’ve learned that the people in our lives, while often there for just a season, are usually there for a reason.

Take a moment to think about the people who God has at your “table” right now. Some of them may be desperately in need of help, and with your unique combination of gifts, wisdom, and experience, you are the one meant to do the helping. Others may have just the things you need for the struggles you are facing.

Some of the people at your “dinner table” are there for you to learn something from. Others need to learn something from you.

So, don’t be so quick to dismiss the person sitting next to you on the plane, or your hairdresser, or your child’s teacher, or the waitress delivering your hamburger as just random people who happen to cross your path.

Maybe they are. Or, maybe they are part of a much bigger plan God is working out. And, just maybe, they were meant to save your life.

ONE DAY A WEEK!

BY RALF WALTERS “It must be nice to be a pastor...I wish I only had to work one day a week.” As a pastor’s wife of 40 years and growing up as a PK, I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard that comment, usually said in jest but often times with a stinging sarcasm that suggested they just had no clue.

A pastor is on call 24/7 and only the pastor and his family know how many family dinners have been left cold and uneaten; how many vacations have been cut short to come back for a funeral or other church related emergency; and how many middle of the night phone calls have sent them to the hospital waiting room or bedside to be with other families.

As part of pastor’s family we know this is where God has called him and how God is using him, but sharing him with you is a ministry that God has called us to. Why not take the time to thank your pastor’s family for their ministry which also happens to be much more than just “one day a week”?

Life Verses

What is a life verse? I’m often asked what it means. To sum it up—a life verse is a verse or passage that speaks to the core of your being. It’s a verse that feels very personal to you. It’s a verse that offers guidance on how you live your life and how you define your faith.

Ava Lewandowski is a dear friend, and she shared that John 10:10 is her life verse. It says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Of this verse, Ava shared, “Christ came that I (and all those who believe in Him) might have life...and life abundant! The abundance is not material, but the joy and blessings of this life... through Him.”

And since the Bible has 31,102 verses—there are plenty to choose from. Though I admit—there are more than a fair share that likely won’t make the list…. For instance, when the Bible quotes Esau as saying, “Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I’m exhausted,”* it isn’t likely that will be a top contender for anyone’s life verse (Genesis 25:30 CSB).

Amy Dixon shared that her life verse is Luke 1:38. The verse says, “And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.” It’s a verse that speaks of obedience. But in addition to Amy’s personal life verse, she also has a verse for her business. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” and it’s a perfect reflection of the name of her business—Inner Strength Pilates.

As I pondered this article and what to write about a life verse, I did what many writers do. I went to Facebook and asked my friends. I got some great answers.

My husband, Wayne, chose Proverbs 16:9. For him, this verse applies to every aspect of his life. It’s a verse he embraces because it reminds him of who is truly in charge. Wayne loves it so much, he painted it in our stairwell as a daily reminder. It says, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

My pastor, Tyler Tankersley, said his life verse is Micah 6:8.

It says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” He chose it because, as a child, he was told this verse was the true measure of a person. Tyler and his wife, Jessica, even incorporated this verse into their wedding vows.

Also from our church, Minister of Students Dane Martin chose Isaiah 40:31. The verse says, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” I am very familiar with this verse since it was my alma mater’s signature verse. I asked Dane why he chose it, and he said, “It’s a reminder to be patient and actually wait on God and to realize that I cannot do it on my own…I need to depend on God, lean on God, and know that with God’s strength, I can do so much more and an abundance is planned for me.”

My friend Audrey shared, “Psalm 139:9-10 became my life verse as a child. Every time I read it, I imagine I am flying to the farthest corners of the world, but no matter where I am or what I walk through, I am held, loved, and guided.” An apt description, since the verse says, “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

Other life verses that were shared include: • Romans 8:26 – “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

• 2 Corinthians 12:9 – “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

• Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Finally—my life verse. My verses are Ephesians 2:8-9, and it’s the verse that my blog/column is named for. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” I chose this passage after an 18 year prodigal journey as a reminder that it all boils down to grace. Undeserved, unmerited, and unearnable grace. It’s the verse that I cling to when in my perfectionist/controlling way—I try to take charge.

Nothing I do will be good enough, and that’s okay because His grace is perfect and all-consuming.

Small Beginnings

I remember once I was praying for the Lord to move mightily in my ministry. I had asked, fasted, and prayed. I had probably begged a little and foamed at the mouth too, but none of it hurried the plan of God in my life. After many days of absolute silence, He finally sent me a little answer. The Lord answered my prayer by saying, “You are concerned about building a ministry, but I am concerned about building a man.”

He concluded by mentioning this warning, which has echoed in my ears all of my life. He said, “Woe unto the man whose ministry becomes bigger than he is!”

Since then, I have concerned myself with praying for the minister and not the ministry. I realized that if the house outgrows the foundation, gradually the foundation will crack, the walls will collapse, and great will be the fall of it!

No matter what you are trying to build, whether it is a business, a ministry, or a relationship, give it time to grow. Some of the best friendships start out gradually.

Some of the strongest Christians once desperately needed prayer for their weakness. I am still amazed

at who I am becoming, as I put my life daily into His hands. He is changing me. He’s not finished. There is so much more that needs to be done. Every day I see more immaturity in me. But what a sharp contrast I am now to what I was!

Humility is a necessity when you know that every accomplishment had to be the result of the wise Master Builder who knows when to do what. He knew when I needed friends. He knew when I needed to sit silently in the night, wrap my arms around my limitations, and whisper a soft request for help into the abyss of my pain. He is the One who rolls back the clouds on the storms and orders the rain to stop. Oh, how I trust Him more dearly and more nearly than I have ever trusted Him before! He is too wise to make a mistake!

My brothers and sisters know that God is continuing His work in you. He’s not finished. He is ever so committed to making you into a person that will reflect His glory. He wants you to become His masterpiece.

He wants you to bask in His light and be the best you can be. Trust Him! For the sake of the church and the world, let’s not be so concerned with our ministry, but be more concerned about building our individual character and faith and praying for one another. The ministry will take care of itself.

Fire Cider Benefits and Recipes

The

name alone sounds delicious, conjuring up a taste of sweetness, a soothing warmth that reaches all the extremities, and a hint of spicy flavoring. Fire Cider is not new. In the late 1970s, teacher, author, and herbalist, Rosemary Gladstar, sought to combine a balance of medicinal ingredients to boost the immune system and treat congestion, colds, and flu. The main ingredient is apple cider vinegar, which offers antibacterial and antioxidant properties to aid sickness and improve heart health. Adding a short list of other flavors, the impact of the taste is a combination of spicy, sour, sweet, sharp, and herbal. Almost 0 years later, fire cider remains a viable natural remedy to restore and invigorate the immune system, curb food cravings, and ease digestion.

More than Just a Tonic As the word continues to spread regarding Fire Cider’s defense against cold and flu, the question arises as to buying a premade bottle. In unexpected locations, you will discover restaurants, markets, various specialty stores, and online vendors which sell it.

Keep in mind, the tonic is viable for eight weeks. One recipe makes more than one dose, which is a daily teaspoon. Alternative options for its use include mixing equal portions of fire cider and raw honey to make a cough syrup. Need a boost of flavoring? Add a splash to stir-fried vegetables or fried rice, or spice up your Bloody Mary cocktail.

For external uses, soak a washcloth in warmed fire cider and rub into pained muscles and joints, or place on the chest to ease congestion.

Recipe Out of pure curiosity, you may want to make a batch. Despite the ease of following a flexible recipe, keep in mind the maceration process takes four weeks before it is ready to use. Of the 101 recipes created just by Rosemary Gladstar, it is important to find one that suits your situation and needs.

STEP 1: Place the following ingredients into a half-gallon canning jar.

1 large red onion (chopped) 1 lemon with the peel (diced) 3 heads of garlic (chopped)

½ cup each of fresh ginger root and fresh turmeric root (grated) ¼ cup of fresh horseradish root (grated) ¼ cup of fresh thyme (chopped) 2 teaspoons of ground black pepper (ground) Optional: Add either fresh cayenne or jalape o peppers, based on your tolerance for spicy flavors.

Optional: a cinnamon stick, echinacea, or lavender flowers.

STEP 2: Pour raw, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar over ingredients until covered; then, add the lid.

STEP 3: Allow to sit from three weeks to a few months in a sunny location, such as the top of the refrigerator, and shake daily.

Similar to tea, the infusion will strengthen.

STEP 4: Strain the liquid and blend. Allow the contents to settle for one week.

STEP 5: Add one-third cup of warmed, unpasteurized honey. The recipe makes more than enough to fill two quart jars; therefore, consider dividing the liquid in half and adding more honey to sweeten the taste. Keep track of your changes to determine which recipe is more enjoyable.

Refrigerate and use for up to two months.

It is wise to date the jar.

While the ingredients may sound like odd combinations, the taste is unique and worthy of your time! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a tonic on hand to maintain health? Mark your calendar to start new batches!

15 Ways to Teach Kids How to Be Kind

As

parents, we want our kids to be the best versions of themselves. We push them to succeed in school, sports, the arts, or whatever their interests may be. Sometimes in the daily rush of life, we forget that it’s also our job to help them to succeed at being kind. Learning to be kind can be just as hard as learning to be a great goalie. It takes practice!

Here are 15 simple ways we can teach our little ones to practice spreading the love….

1 – Push an elderly person’s buggy to their car and load the groceries for them. Engage them in conversation.

2 – Pick up litter from your neighborhood while on a walk; your neighbors will thank you!

3 – Pick a day of the week and smile or say hello to everyone you pass; you never know, it could make their day!

4 – Make a baked good for your neighbor or an acquaintance that you haven’t had much contact with recently. Just because.

5 – Write friendly notes and hand them out to strangers! You will get the happiest reactions!

6 – Give a compliment to a stranger. Tell them you love their outfit, shoes, tattoos, hair. Tell them they look nice today! We as moms should do this for each other all day, every day!!)

9 – Make bags for the homeless. Let your child help you assemble them and hand them out. (Socks, deodorant, an apple and a pack of crackers) 10 – Tell someone if their shoes are untied, if there is something in their hair, or if they’ve dropped something.

Don’t stand idly by!

11 – Wave to someone or give them a thumbs up. Why not?

12 Buy a bundle of flowers or collect them from your garden and hand them out to the people who work at the grocery store, gas station, or to kids at your child’s school.

Wherever!

13 – Make a blanket for the homeless shelter. And an easy and cheap way to do this is to use old shirts. (This will also teach your kids how to sew, an added bonus!)

14 – Go to a local nursing home and spend some time in the dayroom playing games and talking with the residents. Or, make decorations for their doors or hallways.

1 Compliment someone on what a great job they’re doing, and thank them! Especially our teachers!

7 – Anonymously pay someone else’s tab for lunch, coffee, or in the drive-through while out with your family.

It’s important to talk to our kids about putting themselves in someone else’s shoes. You never know what is going on behind the scenes of someone’s life. Sometimes picking the grumpiest person you know to be kind to has the biggest impact.

8 – Pack an extra treat in your child’s lunch one day, and encourage them to share it with someone who has to eat a school-provided lunch. Rice Krispy treats can definitely make a kid’s day!)

None of us is perfect, and we don’t all have to be Positive Polly’s all day every day. But going out of your way to set an example of kindness for your kids to follow may be the most positively impactful thing you could ever do for them.

Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies

I know we typically think of red velvet crinkle cookies as the perfect Christmas cookie, but their buttery taste and cherry red coloring always remind me of Valentine’s Day! They’re deliciously soft and have classic flavors with the color of red velvet cake, but in cookie form.

They’re coated with a sweet dusting of powdered sugar, and once baked up, end with pretty crackles to impress.

Servings: 30 cookies INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1. In a mixing bowl whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt for 30 seconds, set aside. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whip butter and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy.

¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¾ teaspoon salt ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened 1 and one-third cups granulated sugar 3 large eggs 1 Tablespoon milk 1½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons lemon juice 5 teaspoons red food coloring 1 cup white chocolate chips 1 cup powdered sugar

2. Mix in eggs 1 at a time, blending until combined after each addition.

Mix in milk, vanilla, lemon juice and red food coloring.

3. With mixer on low, slowly add in dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Stir in white chocolate chips. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours or until firm enough to shape into balls.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Pour powdered sugar into a bowl.

Remove dough from refrigerator, scoop dough out and with buttered hands, shape into medium balls (about 2½ Tablespoons each).

5. Roll cookie dough balls into powdered sugar and evenly coat. Transfer to a lined baking sheet and flatten slightly, then bake for 13 to 14 minutes. Allow to rest on cookie sheet prior to transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
