ugust is here, and that means back-toschool season! Growing up, this was always one of my favorite times of the year.

Shopping for school supplies and getting ready for a new school year was so exciting. While many people think of January as the season of fresh starts, for me, it has always been late August. There’s just something about the backto-school season that feels full of possibility and new beginnings.

Teachers do incredibly important work. They inspire, encourage, challenge, and shape the next generation every single day. It’s not always an easy job, but it’s one of the most meaningful.

I am so grateful for each and every educator who pours their heart into our children and our community.

I was fortunate to have many unforgettable teachers growing up, but the one who ultimately inspired me to pursue education was Mr. Egan, my AP English teacher at West Forsyth. I don’t know if he ever realized the impact he had, but his passion for learning was contagious. His intelligence, paired with his incredible sense of humor, made his classroom a place I genuinely looked forward to every day. It’s a gift I’ll never forget.

As summer begins to wind down, there’s still time to squeeze in one more adventure! This month’s getaway guide from Suzy features Emerald Pointe—the perfect place to beat the August heat. Be sure to check it out on page 14.

Speaking of back to school, we’re especially excited to feature this month’s article, “The Teachers We Never Forget,” beginning on page 10. This story is particularly meaningful to me because I actually went to college to become a teacher and earned my degree in elementary education. God had different plans for my career, but that experience gave me an even deeper appreciation for the educators in our community.

We’re also excited to introduce a brandnew series this month, “Motherhood Unfiltered.” Our first feature highlights Morgan Clausel of the Winston-Salem Dash. Written by our own Suzy Fielders— a mom herself—the series celebrates inspiring working mothers who are balancing careers, family, and everything in between. You can find it on page 40.

The Teachers We Never Forget How Great Educators Continue Shaping Lives Long After the Final Bell

Most of us can name at least one teacher whose influence extended far beyond the classroom walls.

A TEACHER WHO INSPIRED A TEACHER

Years, even decades, after leaving school, we can still hear their words of encouragement, remember the confidence they inspired, and recall lessons that helped shape who we became.

When Alie thinks of Ms. Young, she remembers a classroom filled with laughter, compassion, and high expectations. Most of all, she remembers a teacher who made every student feel valued.

“I realized she was the most influential teacher in my decision to become an educator,” Alie recalled. “I wanted to be like Ms. Young, a master of her craft and dedicated to her students.”

“Ms. Young truly loved you as a student, and you knew it,” Alie said. “She wanted you to know just how loved you were.”

Today, Alie serves as an elementary assistant director and carries that example into her own work.

Even decades later, Alie remembers Ms. Young’s smile and the welcoming atmosphere she created. During the uncertainty of September 11, she reassured her students that they were safe and helped them understand what had happened in an age-appropriate way.

“For my students to know they are loved,” Alie said. “To know that I am always a supporter and will be there for them throughout their lifetime, as Ms. Young has been for me.”

While students may forget vocabulary words and math formulas, they rarely forget how a teacher made them feel. A teacher who believes in a child, encourages a hidden talent, or offers kindness during a difficult season can leave an imprint that lasts a lifetime.

Teaching is one of the few professions where the full impact of the work may not be known for years. Often, teachers never realize the significance of their influence until a former student returns and says, “You made a difference.”

THE LEGACY THAT LIVES ON

Mrs. Jaynes made learning genuinely fun. I looked forward to going to school every day because of her. She had a gift for making every student feel special and for turning ordinary lessons into adventures.

Whether it is a sixth-grade teacher who inspired a student to become an educator or a third-grade teacher who nurtured a future writer, the impact remains the same. Great teachers help shape futures one student at a time.

As I reflected on the teachers who shaped my own life, one name immediately came to mind: Mrs. Suzie Jaynes, my third-grade teacher at Old Richmond Elementary School.

As all children, I thought anyone over twenty was old, but Mrs. Jaynes seemed different. She was energetic, approachable, and exactly the kind of teacher every child hoped to have.

Even at eight years old, I knew I was fortunate to be in her class. Looking back now, I realize how much of a blessing that year truly was.

Mrs. Jaynes nurtured my love of learning, encouraged my creativity, and inspired a passion for writing that has remained with me throughout my life. She taught me to approach each day with curiosity and enthusiasm.

The greatest measure of a teacher’s success may not be found in report cards or awards. It may be found in the adults who still speak their names decades later with gratitude and affection.

Long after the classroom lights are turned off and the school year ends, their lessons continue to live on, in the confidence they built, the dreams they encouraged, and the people their students eventually become.

That is why the teachers we never forget are often the ones who helped us discover who we were all along.

Today, decades later, Mrs. Jaynes remains part of my life. She is a friend, a confidante, and one of my biggest cheerleaders as I pursue my dream of becoming a children’s book author.

Few teachers leave such a lasting imprint on the lives of their students, but Mrs. Jaynes changed the course of mine. Her belief in me helped foster a lifelong love of writing and learning, and for that I will always be grateful.

August’s Must-Take Day Trip Beat the Heat With a Splash-Filled Family Adventure Just Minutes From Home

August is another hot month of North Carolina summers, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a day trip idea that kept everyone cool. Wet ’n Wild Emerald Pointe is just the place to cool off, have fun and feel like a kid again.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Another great aspect of this day trip destination is that it’s practically down the road in Greensboro. It’s a quick and easy drive down I-40 East.

You cannot bring in outside food and beverages.

However, they do have picnic areas outside the park, so you can always pack a cooler in the car and eat there. Just be sure to get a stamp to reenter the park.

WHY VISIT WET ’N WILD EMERALD POINTE?

The park is stroller friendly and handicap accessible.

Wet ’n Wild Emerald Pointe had its grand opening in June of 1984, and it is still the biggest water park in North Carolina. For more than 40 years, this has remained a staple summer activity in the Triad. I remember going when I was younger and now, I get to take my own kids. As a parent, I love that there is something for all ages. Even for younger kids, they have multiple areas of the park they can enjoy.

During the month of August, Wet ’n Wild Emerald Pointe is open daily through August 23rd, and then reopens August 29th & 30th as well as Labor Day weekend in September.

Hours do vary depending on if it’s a weekday or weekend.

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO AT WET ’N WILD EMERALD POINTE From water slides to memorable desserts, there is a reason this destination is a long-standing summer tradition for many families. As the park has more than 40 attractions, you could go for a full day and still miss doing something. So, here is a list of some don’t miss attractions: 1. Thunder Bay Wave Pool – There is just something special about this attraction that brings people of all ages together. Plus, it is one of the largest wave pools in the US. 2. Happy Harbor – This spot is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers and features lots of splashing fun and even two water slides: Willy the Whale Slide and Happy Clam Slide.

3. The Edge – After a three-year closure, due to storm damage, this fan favorite attraction reopened this year. It originally opened in 2012 and is now bringing back thrills!

4. Lazy River – There is a reason this attraction has lasted since 1986. Lazy Rivers are the perfect combination of relaxation and cooling off. This one is a must for busy moms!

5. Dining – One of the often-overlooked gems of Wet ’n Wild Emerald Pointe is the food and drink options. Bring back your youth and please your kids with Dippin’ Dots. The Walking Tacos are so good and worth a try. Parents can even get alcoholic beverages at Dockside Watering Hole and Sharkey’s Bar. If you have a cabana, you can even get food and drinks delivered directly there.

America250: America’s Field Trip

or two fortunate – and talented – students from Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, this summer will be a bit more special and a great deal more adventurous!

As students of Jillian Hutchens Mors – 8th grade social studies teacher at Hanes Magnet School in Winston-Salem – both Ahalya Johnston and Annika Puwanant are experiencing unique recognition as 2026 awardees in America250’s America’s Field Trip contest.

This national, nonpartisan initiative was formed to engage every American in celebrating the 250th signing of the Declaration of Independence. The America’s Field Trip contest invited students in grades three through 12 to answer the thoughtful question: “What does America mean to you?”

Via original writing and artwork, thousands of students from all 50 states, five U.S. territories and the District of Columbia submitted entries, and these two Winston-Salem scholars were two of the 250 awardees. A diverse panel of judges – consisting of current and former educators – reviewed and scored submissions based on the following criteria: student voice (expressing passion and individuality in a way that feels genuine), clarity of idea (offering fresh insight and innovative thinking through words, visuals or both) and presentation (engaging the audience, creating impact and showing organization and polish that strengthens their overall message).

During the summer, Ahalya will be traveling to New Orleans, Louisiana for an immersive, behindthe-scenes field trip experience focusing on the area’s unique cuisine and culture. Annika will be traveling to Boston, Massachusetts for a behind-the-scenes tour of the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum where she’ll learn about Boston’s Revolutionary War landmarks, from Bunker Hill to Dorchester Heights and the Boston Harbor.

“It really means a lot to have my artwork recognized and appreciated,” shares Ahalya. “I put a lot of hard work into it, and I hope my message behind it gets to someone out there.”

Ahalya is most looking forward to the food experience during her time in New Orleans. “I’m not a big foodie – in fact, I’m a pretty picky eater – but I’m working on expanding my palate!” she adds.

Annika is thrilled, and grateful, to be visiting Boston this summer!

“I was really excited to have won America’s Field Trip! Being recognized for my art and my own perspective on America was truly unfathomable, yet inspiring. Growing up in multiple states and interacting with so many different cultures and people has really taught me a lot and shaped me into who I am today,” she shares.

“As we mark America’s 250th anniversary, it is more important than ever for students to learn about the people, places and stories that have shaped our country,” shares their very proud teacher, Jillian Mors.

With a focus on today’s young people becoming the leaders, innovators and thinkers who will shape the next 250 years of our country – America250 recognizes the importance of these young voices being heard far and wide as we join together to commemorate this historic milestone.

A FICTIONAL ESCAPE: Then And Now

This is a monthly column featuring flash fiction and poetry curated by local author Leo Jerez. Enjoy these short, yet captivating stories over a quick break at work, in the waiting room, at the school pickup line or on your commute.

Jason let out a heavy sigh, sitting down on his favorite armchair; over the years, it had gradually taken on the shape of his backside. He growled like a grizzly while he tenderly toed off his work boots, then he finally sat back, pressing the knots and spurs of his aching body against the weathered material.

He closed his eyes, rocking in the recliner, letting the quiet of the house wash over him.

“Hi Daddy,” Benny said, his voice straining as he clambered up the side of the leather chair.

“Hey Ben,” Jason said, his own smile now framed by graying hair and beard.

Jason grunted from the impact of his son flopping into his lap.

“Thanks for coming. You okay?”

“Hi Son.” “Guess what?”

Then came a familiar interruption – the little pitter patter of bare feet slapping down onto the wooden stairs.

“Whatcha got there?”

“Daddy – Daddy!”

Jason cycled a slow breath. In. Out. He tried to push away the growing exhaustion, tried to remind himself that this was Benny’s favorite moment of the day. Jason’s too, if he were honest.

Jason froze. “Hmm?” It was the only thing he had the energy to respond with, but he knew it was enough. Benny would typically do most of the talking, and Jason would find some source deep in his well to pull up just enough answers.

The little stomps continued as five-year-old Benny skidded into the living room, weaving between furniture, a familiar crinkling sound from the sheet of construction paper clutched in his grip.

“You gotta guess.”

“Well,” he said, “I bet it’s a super professional drawing from Daddy’s favorite artist.”

“Uh-huh.” Benny nodded, biting his lower lip, barely suppressing a grin. He held the page behind his back; little knee bones dug into Jason’s thighs as the boy wriggled to keep his balance, bringing out a hissing inhale from Jason. Still, the kid’s smile was irresistible, and Jason couldn’t help but break into his own.

“Well, I can’t possibly guess. It could be anything. Lemme see.”

The boy could wait no longer, flinging his arm forward with a giggle. Jason could see the image moving towards him as if in slow motion, the shaky movement of the page slowly coming into focus in his mind’s eye.

“Mmhmm.” It was the only thing Jason had the resilience to respond with before the wave of loss – and pride – would overwhelm him.

Where had the time gone?

He dragged calloused hands across his eyes, and the framed centerpiece of the exhibition returned to focus.

A masterful work of fine strokes, rich layers and deep shadows. A man in the portrait, shaped by labor, the lines of his face etched with exhaustion but softened with an enduring kindness.

Beneath the painted texture of the man’s blue shirt, Jason saw only the hard press of a Crayola, wrinkles formed through tiny fingers clutching the page too hard, rather than shading and skill. He imagined the pain of those knobby knees from so long ago, digging into his thighs again and that smile full of pride.

It was so worth it. All of it.

Ben clicked his tongue, eyes welling.

He stepped closer to his father, his eyebrows upturned, reaching out with open arms that stood level with Jason now.

“I told you,” Jason said past a lump in his throat. “Professional artist…” he broke at last.

“I know, Dad.” Ben sniffed, embracing his father. “I know.”

Ben’s arms were firm; his large biceps engulfing the sobs of both men. But, Jason could still remember those soft, spindly twigs that would wrap around his neck. The tight squeeze of love shared. Father and son. Then and now.

Faith at Work: How to Navigate the Workplace as a Christian

For many Christians, faith feels natural on Sunday mornings, during Bible study or when serving in ministry; but Monday morning often presents a different challenge.

How do we live out our faith in the workplace?

Most workplace policies exist because integrity cannot always be assumed.

Organizations create codes of conduct, ethics policies and accountability systems because people sometimes take shortcuts, avoid responsibility or place personal interests ahead of what is right.

The answer is not usually found in quoting scripture during meetings or displaying Christian symbols at our desks. While there is certainly nothing wrong with either of those things, the most powerful expression of faith at work often comes through our actions rather than our words.

Early in my career, I worked with a manager who discovered a significant error in a report that had already been shared with senior leadership. Rather than hoping no one noticed, he immediately acknowledged the mistake, took responsibility and provided corrected information.

We spend a significant portion of our lives working. Because of that, our workplaces are among the primary places where our character, values and beliefs are on display.

What stood out wasn’t the error itself. It was his willingness to own it.

People notice how we respond to pressure, handle mistakes, treat others and make decisions. Those everyday moments often reveal far more about our faith than any conversation ever could.

VALUES IN ACTION

Values are not simply beliefs we hold. They are principles that guide our behavior, especially when circumstances are difficult.

When I think about Christian values in the workplace, five stand out: integrity, respect, humility, diligence and compassion.

These values influence how we interact with coworkers, customers, leaders and employees. They shape the culture around us and often create opportunities to demonstrate Christ through our actions.

INTEGRITY: DOING THE RIGHT THING

Integrity means doing what is right, even when no one is watching.

His credibility actually increased because people trusted his honesty.

RESPECT AND HUMILITY: SEEING THE VALUE IN OTHERS Every person we work with has value.

That sounds simple, but respect becomes harder when dealing with difficult coworkers, frustrating customers or employees who challenge our patience.

Humility reminds us that we do not have all the answers. It helps us listen before speaking, learn from others and admit when we are wrong. Respect and humility create stronger relationships and healthier workplaces because they communicate that people matter.

DILIGENCE: WORKING WITH EXCELLENCE

Scripture encourages us to work wholeheartedly, as though we are working for the Lord.

That does not mean becoming a workaholic.

It means approaching our responsibilities with excellence, dependability and a commitment to doing our best.

In a world where many people seek shortcuts, diligence stands out. Consistently delivering quality work demonstrates both professionalism and character.

COMPASSION: BRINGING HUMANITY TO WORK Workplaces are filled with people carrying burdens we may never fully understand.

A struggling employee. A coworker caring for an aging parent. A leader facing difficult decisions.

Compassion allows us to respond with kindness rather than judgment. It encourages us to listen, support and extend grace when people need it most.

Sometimes the most meaningful way to live out our faith is simply by being present for someone who is hurting.

FAITH THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF One of the most powerful aspects of living out Christian values at work is that it often naturally creates opportunities.

When people consistently see integrity, humility, kindness and compassion, they become curious. They notice something different.

Over time, they may ask for advice, seek support during difficult situations or even inquire about your faith.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to reflect Christ through how we show up every day.

Because long before people hear what we believe, they are watching how we live.

2 6-ounce filets (for 2 salads)

2 romaine lettuce hearts

1 cucumber

2-3 sweet peppers

A few banana peppers (out of the jar)

1 ripe avocado

Feta cheese (or any other kind you may like)

INSTRUCTIONS

SUMMER STEAK SALAD WITH LEMON DIJON VINAIGRETTE This month, I wanted to share a good, light summertime meal that is a go-to around my house – a steak salad!

1.

Light up the grill for the steaks – while the grill is getting hot, I like to prep the rest of the ingredients.

2.

Let the filets sit out at room temperature for 30 minutes, and season with salt and pepper (or however you like).

3.

Wash the romaine heart, cut in half lengthwise, cut the ends off, then chop up the other direction.

4.

Peel and chop cucumber, slice tomatoes in half, chop sweet peppers however you like and julienne carrots.

5.

We’ll save the avocado and cheese for when the steak is resting.

Prep the dressing.

Lemon Dijon vinaigrette: ¼ C extra virgin olive oil ¼ C freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tsp. dijon mustard 2-3 tsp. cane sugar ½ tsp. salt Freshly cracked black pepper (to taste) Add all ingredients above into a mason jar, put the lid on and shake it up!

Once the grill is up to the right temperature, throw the steaks on – I usually do smaller filets directly over charcoal, and they should only take 10 minutes or so to get to a perfect medium rare. Just use a temperature probe to get to your desired temperature (or sear them on the stove and then finish in the oven – whatever works).

7.

While the steaks rest, cut your avocado in half and then into slices or chunks – however you prefer. Get your cheese and other fresh ingredients out.

8.

Build your salad – lettuce first, add the rest of your ingredients, then add that sliced filet mignon on top and drizzle the lemon dijon vinaigrette all over the top – this makes for an awesome lighter meal that is perfect for a hot summer day!

This is one of those recipes you can really modify a lot and put your own twist on, but two things that I always use are filet mignon and lemon dijon vinaigrette.

Each month this series introduces fun and impactful healthy habits to help families with kids and teens prioritize physical, mental, and spiritual well-being—fostering a lifestyle of shared growth and lifelong wellness. Healthy habits built together are the ones that last a lifetime.

We celebrate our child’s independence from taking their first steps to passing their drivers test. We cheer them on and celebrate milestone after milestone as they conquer the world around them, showing how capable they are at doing things by themselves. While independence is a beautiful thing, we’re not meant to take life on by ourselves. Teaching our kids that asking for help is not a weakness but rather a form of wisdom, is a lesson that will serve them for a lifetime.

ASKING FOR HELP CAN BE SURPRISINGLY DIFFICULT

The American Psychological Association shares that, in its research, people often avoid seeking help due to being feared as appearing incompetent, becoming a burden to others or being judged in a negative capacity. In fact, studies confirm that many adults would rather suffer in silence than ask for assistance or support even when easily available. Somewhere along the line, the brain was fed the idea that being capable and successful meant approaching life completely self-sufficient. Truthfully, this false narrative starts to make its way into our subconscious during early childhood, so it’s important to intentionally teach the power of asking for help.

YOU CAN GO FARTHER IN LIFE TOGETHER THAN YOU CAN ALONE

Children that learn to ask for help when needed develop stronger emotional resilience, greater problem solving skills and healthier relationships! Whether asking for help with a

math problem or managing big emotions, they need to know it’s okay to ask for support. This is how kids grow into adults who seek guidance to help them learn something new or navigate difficult situations.

Teaching kids who to ask for help is the most important step! Can they identify a trusted person to help them when they need it?

Point out safe resources in their circle like a parent, teacher, coach, relative or other mentor. Asking for help isn’t about handing off a problem to someone else, but rather about gaining support so you don’t have to face a problem alone!

SIMPLE WAYS TO GET STARTED

Here are a few ideas on how to implement this as a norm in your home.

1 NORMALIZE ASKING FOR HELP OUT LOUD Children learn by watching us! Let them hear you ask for help.

Something as simple as asking an employee at the grocery store where something is or asking a neighbor for advice on something can show them the power of asking for help. Create dialogue with your kids after: “I didn’t know where the peanut butter was; I’m so glad I asked for help so I could find it.”

2 CREATE A “WHO CAN HELP ME?” LIST As you start to have conversations around asking for help, create a list of trusted people they can always ask for support from together.

You can write this on a Post-it or a fun pad with their help naming people or, if they are younger, let them draw pictures of each person. This helps add confidence around knowing who is actually in their corner.

3 PRACTICE “PAUSE & ASK” MOMENTS Emotions are high for most kids. Pick a time when your child is a little overwhelmed or frustrated to turn it into a teaching moment.

Help them to recognize what they are feeling, and encourage them to ask themselves, “Have I tried asking for help? Who could help me right now? What would help me feel better right now?” This is how you create a healthy habit for them to lean into the next time they feel this way.

CREATING PRACTICES THAT LAST A LIFETIME

Another way to look at teaching kids to ask for help is helping them learn to trust themselves! Kids need to learn how to recognize their own needs and trust in others to help them when possible. We want our children to grow up into adults who advocate for themselves and others, seek guidance and avoid struggling with isolation or over-independence. Remember, kids who are taught to ask for help are also typically the ones who are more willing to offer it. Teaching today’s children to ask for help and accept support helps raise a generation of compassionate and resilient adults.

7 Tips to Prepare for the First Day of Preschool Simple Ways to Ease First Day Jitters and Start the School Year Strong

That first day of preschool is filled with so many emotions, for both the little ones and parents! It’s a big step towards independence, socialization and learning.

Like any big event, it’s important to prepare as much as possible to make it smoother. Here are a few tips to prepare for that first day of preschool.

As a busy parent, it’s easy to not think about this until it happens; however, the reality is this is going to be an emotional day for you as well, so be mindful of that in advance! Whatever emotions you feel, show yourself grace to experience and express them.

INVOLVED 7 BE This one is more an after-the-first-day

tip, but be involved with your kid’s time at preschool. Even if you don’t have the physical time to volunteer for parties, you can still be involved. Ask your kids about their days, even if it’s simple questions. I don’t always get responses, but I still ask to show my kids I care and am involved with their days. Don’t forget to ask the teachers what supplies they need because they can always use something!

Preschool is such an important stepping stone for future education and lays the foundation. While it can be scary that first day, before you know it, they won’t be crying at drop off and will be very excited!

So, hang in there through any tears, even if they are your own, because it’s well worth the time, effort and money.

Framing your talent

Lately, I’ve been making art, framing it and putting it on my walls. My space has become my personal gallery, just as I’d wanted for so long.

There’s something so comforting about being surrounded by art.

I’ve always loved art. I just haven’t always loved mine. Can you relate?

But, since I started putting myself out there and meeting other artists, even making collages together, it’s been easier to like – even love – what I create. Even when it’s imperfect, which it almost always is.

Framing my work has helped build my confidence. I stopped taking art classes in middle school after a bad experience with an art teacher, who held up my drawing to the class as an example of what not to do. Talk about soul crushing. I was so excited when she asked if she could show everyone because I thought she would compliment my work!

It took me years, decades even, to get back into art. I didn’t believe I was an artist because of that one experience, that one teacher who I had for one class telling me I wasn’t an artist. Have you or your kids had a similar experience?

Though this teacher really hurt me, I eventually started collaging and painting in college and graduate school. I began making art to make art, and I made more expressive and intuitive art than anything. I created for myself and did what felt good. And, when I made something I really loved – something I was proud of – that feeling

was one that can’t be replaced by someone telling me I’m an artist. I told myself I’m an artist. I saw how I’m an artist. I framed it and put it on the wall as a reminder.

Plus, if I’m being honest, the frame, mat and glass often cover uneven lines, glue streaks and other imperfections. Sometimes the frame highlights the imperfection, reminding me that even the areas I’m not happy with are worth framing, displaying and admiring. It’s freeing to let go and accept art as the imperfect thing it is, regardless of whether you created it or someone else. Don’t you love your family’s art no matter what it looks like? Or your favorite artist’s? Don’t you put it on the refrigerator or spend time with it in a gallery or magazine?

We think of framed art as art that’s worthy; what’s inside the frame is a masterpiece. And, it’s true. When we frame a piece, it means we not only accept it, but we like it. Something about it makes us want to see it every day.

You can do this with your art and your family’s, not just with art you buy from another artist. You are an artist. Your child is an artist. Your partner is an artist. Your friends, your family, are artists. I believe we’re all artists. We just don’t always believe we are because someone – sometimes ourselves – told us otherwise.

Remember, there are different ways to be an artist. Your art doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It doesn’t have to follow specific rules or be categorized as a particular style. It doesn’t even have to follow a tutorial. Your art only has to speak to you or, if you’re exhibiting for others as well, to reach them in a way only you could.

Surround yourself and your family with reminders that you’re artists if you want to be! You’re worthy, you’re the curator of all the art that makes up your life and adorns your walls. So, frame the thing. You or your family’s paintings, poems, collages, certificates, degrees, recipes, sketches, doodles, notes, projects, etc.

Frame your talent.

You are the masterpiece.

Teresia Queen is pictured with her NFMC winners and scholarship recipients from the 2026 festivals and state finals. She was presented the Hinda Hongiman award for years of meritorious and outstanding volunteer service to the state organization. She serves as the NCFMC State Gold Cup Chairman and the Wake Forest Festival Administrator and Scheduler. Teresia, and husband, Allen, sponsor several of the NCFMC scholarships for pianist and vocalists as forever endowments. The Hinda Honigman award is the highest level service award given by NCFMC.

Katelynn Beadle is a recently graduated homeschool graduate who also earned a dual two year degree from Forsyth Tech. THE PSYCHOLOGY ON OUR PHYSICAL OF HEAT & MENTAL HEALTH

onsidering August is the month known for extremely hot weather, it is vital for all to fully understand the effects extreme heat can have on our physical and mental health. Particularly the effect it can have on our most vulnerable populations – our younger and elderly loved ones. Statistics alone are sure to terrify anyone; with the Centers for Disease Prevention reporting that there were more than “1,500 heat-related deaths nationwide for the 2025 season.”

While as of 2025, severe cold remains the leading mortality risk, dying from extreme heat is still on the rise, especially this summer, where we all saw temperatures reach the upper 90s at the end of May. While it remains to be seen whether the summer of 2026 will break the records of last summer, one thing can be sure. No matter how hot the piedmont will be, it will be hot enough to cause profound effects on all and possibly irreversible damage to certain populations if precautionary measures are not taken.

How exactly does extreme heat affect one’s physical and mental health? According to the article, “How heat affects the mind,” by the American Psychology Association, excessive heat will first attack one’s physical well being. “The physical consequences of heat, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, are well known.”

While heat stroke and heat exhaustion sound similar, they are different in a few ways. Heat exhaustion is the precursor to heat stroke, the more severe and dangerous heat-related illness. Heat exhaustion occurs when your body loses excessive amounts of salt, causing significant harm to your body such as sweating, clammy skin, a fast yet weak pulse, muscle cramps, headache, nausea, dizziness and even fainting. One thing to note though, is when heat exhaustion occurs, your mind is still intact and those suffering from heat exhaustion can often still converse.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, heat stroke occurs when, “the body’s temperature regulation fails completely, causing core body temperature to rapidly rise above 104°F (40°C).” When a heat stroke occurs, your body is unable to regulate your core temperature, and sweating is unable to occur. Sadly, when a heat stroke occurs, “the body temperature can rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes,” eventually leading to permanent disability or death if immediate emergency treatment does not occur. Symptoms of heat stroke include a confused mental status, slurred speech, hot dry skin, profuse sweating, seizures, and loss of consciousness.

hile physically extreme temperatures wreak havoc on one’s body, hot temperatures can also have devastating effects on one’s mental health. The article, “4 Effects of Heat on Mental Health,” by UCLA Health, explains how more than 50% of Americans find themselves more anxious. However, the effects on one’s mental health are not limited to simply being worried.

Specific heat-related factors can lead to severe depression through increased substance abuse, medication inconsistency, poor sleep and poor serotonin levels, all brought on by extreme heat. Irritability and aggression are two other mental health effects brought on by feverish temperatures. Studies show, “...from 2021, rising temperatures can increase the number of violent crimes, including homicides, sexual offenses and assaults.” What is even more shocking is how in, “...seven [unnamed] U.S. cities, each time the temperature rose five degrees Celsius (nine degrees Fahrenheit), there were up to 5% more sex offenses the following week.”

All this said, there are simple things you can do to avoid putting yourself or those you love in a negative heat-related situation.

• Stay hydrated! Make sure water is always on hand. If you or someone you care about is not crazy about water, try infusing it with an electrolyte packet or simple lemon or fruit, anything to make it more enticing.

•

Another simple step is to stay in an air-conditioned location as long as possible. If this is not an option, go to a nearby store or public space like a library to get out of the heat. When temperatures rise, simply going into the shade may not be enough.

•

Schedule outdoor activities sensibly. If you do not have to be outside for an activity, do not.

•

NEVER leave children OR animals in cars unattended during hotter temperatures. Even a quick trip inside to get some milk could lead to a heat-related illness.

• Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors as they may have a situation where air conditioning is not happening.

• Finally, stay up to date with elevated temperatures daily by keeping up with the news. Do not find yourself, or someone you care about, in a situation where heat can negatively impact you and your physical and mental well being.

“Balancing motherhood with a career in sports can be challenging, especially during baseball season. My schedule is pretty demanding between working every Dash game and my regular 9-5 in the office. Long days, late nights and weekend games and events are all part of the job. I have learned that I cannot create more hours in the day, but I can be more intentional with the time I do have. Whether it is being fully present at work or making the most of family time at home, I have learned to focus on quality over quantity and give my attention to what matters most in the moment.”

“I think every working mom deals with some level of mom guilt (at least I know I do). If there was one thing I wish someone had told me

sooner, it is that the guilt never completely goes away, but you can choose how you look at it. Instead of focusing on what you are missing, focus on what you are modeling. Your child(ren) gets to see you work hard, chase your goals and balance a lot all at once. Being a working mom is not always easy, but it is an incredible opportunity to show just how strong and capable your children can be too.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SELF CARE ROUTINES OR ITEMS?

“If I am being honest, I need to be better about this. Something small, but consistent, is my coffee run every morning before work. I can sip my iced coffee, listen to my 90s country music and enjoy my ‘me-time’ during my commute before the workday gets started. When I can, I will never pass up getting my nails done or aimlessly walking around Home Goods/TJ Maxx.”

“Do everything with so much love in your heart that you would never want to do it any other way.”

“My daughter absolutely loves Dash games, especially the Pepper Dash (Go Nana Pepper!) and Bolt. She gets so excited when she sees them and can even recognize our team logos when we are out and about. Right now, her favorite thing to say is that she wants to “go to the baseball game and run the bases”, which is a daily ask! One of the best parts of my job has been getting to watch her grow up around the ballpark the past three seasons and seeing the game through her eyes!”

he first day of school marks more than the end of summer— it signals a fresh beginning. New teachers, new classmates, new opportunities and a brand-new chapter await. While the excitement can be mixed with a few butterflies, creating meaningful family traditions can help children start the school year feeling loved, supported and confident.

One of the simplest traditions is sharing a special breakfast together before the first day of school. Whether it's homemade pancakes, favorite muffins or breakfast from a local café, taking time to slow down creates a positive start before the busy morning begins.

Many families also capture a first-day photo each year.

Beyond holding a sign with grade level and age, encourage your child to answer a few fun questions: What do you want to be when you grow up? What's your favorite book? Who's your best friend? Looking back through these snapshots over the years becomes a treasured keepsake of how much they've grown.

Another meaningful tradition is writing encouraging notes. Slip a handwritten message into a lunchbox or backpack on the first day. A simple "You've got this!" or "I'm so proud of you" can provide comfort during an unfamiliar day and remind your child they're supported, even when you're apart.

As the school year begins, consider creating a family goal together. Instead of focusing only on grades, choose goals like reading together three nights each week, eating dinner as a family more often or trying one new activity each month. Maybe your child made a new friend, mastered multiplication or finally worked up the courage to join a club. Recognizing effort—not just achievement—helps build confidence and resilience.

Finally, end the first day with a simple family tradition. Ask everyone to share their favorite part of the day, something that surprised them and one thing they're looking forward to tomorrow.

These conversations create space for connection and help parents stay involved in what's happening at school.

The beauty of traditions isn't that they have to be elaborate. Children remember consistency more than extravagance. A favorite breakfast, an annual photo, an encouraging note or an evening conversation may seem small today, but years from now they'll become the moments your family cherishes most.

As backpacks are packed and alarms are set, remember that the best school supply you can give your child is the reassurance that home is a place where they're always encouraged, celebrated and loved.

Lunchbox Refresh:

Easy Ideas for a Healthy, Happy School Year As backpacks come out of the closet and alarm clocks get set a little earlier, one daily task returns to many parents' routines: packing school lunches. While it's easy to fall into the same sandwich-and-chips cycle, a little variety can make lunchtime more exciting—and help fuel kids for a full day of learning and play.

The good news? Packing a balanced lunch doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming.

A simple formula can help take the guesswork out of lunch prep. Aim to include a source of protein, a whole grain, fruits or vegetables, and a fun snack. Protein helps kids stay full longer and supports growing bodies, while fruits and veggies add vitamins, fiber and color to the lunchbox.

Instead of relying on processed convenience foods, consider a few easy protein options like sliced turkey or chicken, hard-boiled eggs, cheese cubes, hummus, Greek yogurt or sunflower seed butter (a great alternative for schools with nut-free policies). Pair those with whole-grain crackers, pita bread, tortillas or brown rice for lasting energy.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, think beyond the traditional apple. Grapes, berries, clementines, cucumber slices, snap peas, bell pepper strips and cherry tomatoes are all easy to pack and require little preparation. A small container of ranch dressing, hummus or yogurt dip can encourage even picky eaters to enjoy more vegetables.

One helpful strategy is involving your children in the planning process.

Set aside a few minutes each weekend to let them choose from a list of healthy options. Kids are often more willing to eat foods they've helped select, and giving them a sense of ownership can reduce lunchtime leftovers.

Another way to simplify mornings is prepping ahead. Wash and portion fruits, chop vegetables, make sandwiches in advance or create grab-and-go snack bins in the refrigerator. Spending just 30 minutes on Sunday can make weekday mornings feel much less rushed.

And remember, lunch doesn't have to look the same every day. Leftover pasta salad, homemade mini muffins, breakfast-for-lunch, quesadilla wedges or a DIY "snack box" with cheese, crackers, fruit and veggies can break up the routine while still offering balanced nutrition.

It's also okay to leave room for a favorite treat. A homemade cookie, a handful of pretzels or a small piece of chocolate can absolutely fit into an overall healthy lunch. Teaching moderation—not perfection—helps children develop a positive relationship with food that lasts far beyond the school years.

At the end of the day, the best lunch is one your child will actually eat.

Focus on offering a variety of wholesome foods, introducing new options gradually and remembering that healthy eating is built over time—not in a single meal.

The Art of Letting Kids Be Bored F

or many parents, the words “I’m bored” can trigger an immediate search for something to do. We pull out crafts, suggest games, plan outings or hand over a screen to keep everyone entertained. But what if boredom isn’t something to avoid? What if it’s actually one of the greatest gifts we can give our children?

When children aren’t constantly entertained, their brains get to work.

Boredom encourages creativity, problem-solving and imagination.

It’s often in those quiet moments that a cardboard box becomes a spaceship, a blanket transforms into a fort or a backyard turns into an exciting expedition.

Learning to navigate boredom also helps children become more independent. Instead of relying on parents to fill every moment, they begin discovering activities they genuinely enjoy. They learn how to entertain themselves, make decisions and solve problems without someone providing the answers.

Of course, this doesn’t happen instantly. At first, your child may complain or insist there’s “nothing to do.” That’s okay. Resist the urge to immediately solve the problem. Give them time to think. More often than not, they’ll eventually create their own adventure.

This doesn’t mean abandoning family activities or eliminating extracurriculars. It simply means creating space between them. A slower afternoon at home can be just as valuable as a packed calendar.

The next time you hear, “I’m bored,” try smiling instead of scrambling for a solution. You might respond with, “I wonder what you’ll come up with.”

Then give them the freedom—and the confidence— to figure it out.

Boredom can also encourage valuable life skills like patience and perseverance. In a world filled with constant notifications, streaming entertainment and busy schedules, learning to simply “be” is becoming increasingly rare. Allowing children to experience quiet moments helps them become more comfortable with slowing down.

One way to support independent play is by keeping a few open-ended materials within reach. Building blocks, art supplies, puzzles, dress-up clothes, LEGOs®, books or even recycled boxes can inspire hours of creative play without requiring detailed instructions.

Parents can also model the value of downtime. Instead of filling every spare moment with productivity, let your children see you reading a book, gardening, sketching or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. They’ll learn that not every minute needs to be scheduled.

It’s a Grand Grand Life It’s the Heat AND the Humidity!

It may be August in magazine time, but in actuality, I’m writing this in July.

I point this out because mentioning fireworks in August might be a bit confusing. I may not know what day it is every once in a while, but I have yet to question the month.

So far, this summer has been quite hot and humid. Living at the coast, we can expect a nice breeze coming off of the ocean, but even that hasn’t helped with the temperature in the upper 90s. Summer storms may block the sun, but also make it more humid.

July has been filled with heat, swim meets, grandkids off to camp, heat, watching our daughter’s new home being built, family visits, heat, beautiful fireworks, a cookout, trips to Southport and did I mention the heat?

My grandchildren don’t seem to be as bothered by it. Of course, three of them have a pool in their backyard, and the other four have a club pool they can go to. They have always lived in homes with air conditioning and ridden in cars that keep them nice and cool wherever they go. I love that they are fine knowing there are so many ways they can easily cool off no matter what it’s like outside. They’ve never had to experience being without AC for any length of time. A power outage kicked on the generator. A ride in the air conditioned car could get them to a number of places to be cool until the issue was fixed. I am happy they have options.

As a young child, our home had a large window fan and several smaller fans throughout other rooms. When it was too miserably hot to play

outside, my mother would lay down a large, puffy satin quilt in the living room with a rotating fan. My sister and I would play board games and drink lemonade. Later, when cooler water, instead of the water warmed by the sun, would come through the garden hose, we would put on our bathing suits and spray each other or hook it up to the sprinkler and run through it until we had to get ready for dinner.

Interestingly, my grandchildren do not seem to be affected by the heat as much as adults. My eldest grandson goes to soccer camp every summer. It is always when the temperature seems to be breaking records for the hottest it’s ever been during that week, so the early morning and early evening outdoor coaching time at the camp is necessary to avoid the heat of the day. Even with that, he is grateful for an air conditioned room and cold shower at the end of the day.

Two of my granddaughters go to a camp in the mountains. One is there as a counselor, while the other attends a three-week session. Even though it can occasionally be a bit warm, it is never as hot as it is here. Plus, there is a big lake to swim in and indoor activities if it rains. The three weeks seems to fly by for both of them. There is never a complaint about the weather – they dare not consider what it’s been like at home.

Oh well, looking at the expected weather forecast for the next couple of weeks, it looks like I’ll be spending more time inside.

Maybe some unexpected front will come through bringing the temperature down to the mid 80s. What a treat that would be!

Last month, our beloved country celebrated its 250th anniversary. But, as we gathered on July 4th, the celebration didn’t feel like it should have for a country that fought back its homeland to become an independent, free nation. Free of rule by crowns, and instead, a rule OF the people, BY the people, FOR the people. Those early settlers endured the act of survival itself, from starvation to plagues, with their ancestors a half a world away, there was no one to save them but themselves.

Some didn’t make it, yet the spirit they brought survived in the ones that did. The spirit that all men are created equal, a definition that would later be enhanced to be indicative of a proper humanity. Women would be included, all races would be included, in a creed and declaration that would define what the contemporary modern world should be.

Though our forefathers were phenomenal architects of a new world that never existed before it, they weren’t without their faults. Faults that were indicative of the times and culture they lived in, a culture they brought with them to the New World. A culture they would revise, while still being resistant to some changes.

I’m not completely sure the forefathers could foresee what making all men and women equal would produce. I feel that even they were not that prophetic in their vision.

One thing it produced was a place where women had the chance to be what they wanted to be. Where their voices were heard and appreciated. It didn’t happen all at once; instead, it’s still evolving slowly over decades.

Some glass ceilings still exist, but many have been broken. For this, America’s heart beats even stronger.

It also produced a land of cultural medley.

Where Lady Liberty first professed in 1883 and was displayed in 1903, welcoming immigrants with the famous lines: “Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” This country specifically reached out to those who dreamed of a better life. More than anything, to be free. Free to live the way they want, love the way they want, worship the way they desire and speak freely, knowing their brethren share the same

freedoms. That mantra brought brilliance to this country. Determined people, with a drive for service, innovation, a joy for life and humanity in its purest form. This “melting pot” took what the forefathers started and raised it to another level. America became the shining city on the hill, for others to relish and model around the globe. And what a model it was. In the farthest corners of the earth, they saw America as more than just a free country. It represented an ideal, hope, love, generosity, compassion, empathy for mankind, the place anyone would want to be a part of, or at the very least, emulate.

The richness of our multiplicitous society gives us riches in science, the arts, medicine, education and so many more areas that may not rise to this level of importance to mankind, yet are still abundant in their rewards.

Ironically, at this time when we celebrate that magical blessing upon the world, our country is moving away from the principles and values that led to the “shining city on the hill.”

I understand we’re divided along political lines. I’ve studied the power of influence, thank you Robert Cialdini, and the effect of tribalism on the human psyche. As Cialdini said, “Once we commit to a choice, our need to appear consistent keeps us locked into it…” Our politics have become a bad reality show, and our society is becoming more like a version of William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies.”

My cousin will like that last reference (a favorite book of his). He and I may not often agree on everything, but we don’t let that stop us from enjoying life together. Today, that’s not true for all families, and that’s my central concern in this story. Families who don’t speak because of differing political affiliations.

There’s a lot of conflict and despair in this world. If we fail to acknowledge the loathing that is permeating our most beloved land, among our brethren, our neighbors and especially our families, we’ve lost sight of what we had.

No matter what, however, the one constant is family, and close relationships that mean something. In the words of Dez Del Rio, “Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs…” By design, we need that support to navigate life’s challenges. Life is far too short not to speak to family or once-dear friends and more, because they either don’t wear a red hat, or they do.

It just may be the seed planted – that brings America together – starts within the family.

To paraphrase Christopher Lasch, American historian, our family is a haven in a heartless world. Let’s not lose it, lest it may not come back. We may not come back.
