Sweet 16. That’s this issue of Forsyth Woman Engaged! It’s hard to believe that we began this magazine in 2011, and we’ve produced it twice a year ever since! We’ve gone through some significant formatting changes – from being a small, pocketbook sized magazine to a full-sized, bound publication. A few years ago, we changed our production months to coincide more with wedding and engagement season. And, every issue is our new favorite! But, with the 16th issue comes two big changes…

First, a name change! We’re simplifying our name to be FW Engaged. As they say, “to improve is to change,” and we are committed to getting better and better for each new season of brides.

Second, a new logo! To go with our new name, our talented artist has put a clean, modern feel on our brand, and we are excited to unveil it with this issue.

What won’t change, however, is our ongoing commitment to celebrate local weddings! We will continue to feature local couples, local vendors and local inspiration! Our community is full of creative ideas from one-of-a-kind venues to culinary delights to floral masterpieces. Forsyth County is home to great, highquality wedding professionals who are masterful at creating a couple’s unique vision.

We are thrilled to introduce them to you!

At the end of the day – we love what we do. And, because we love what we do, we hope that love is reflected in the pages of our magazines.

• Send them home with a reason to think of you every morning – coffee!

Which Month is Best for My Wedding?

Even before they are engaged, most people will already have an idea as to the time of year they want to get married. After all, this is one of the first decisions a couple will make regarding their wedding. Your special day might be during a winter snowfall or a sunny summer day on the beach. Whatever suits your fancy, there are still important things to consider when deciding on your perfect wedding month. For example, during April and May, prices for venues and vendors can be higher, because it is the beginning of wedding season. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the various wedding months.

WINTER – DECEMBER, JANUARY AND FEBRUARY:

During winter, it is the end of one year and the beginning of the next. So, what better time to get married and start a new life, right? You might want to think again. Pros for a winter wedding include beautiful scenery with snow and festive decorations, the ability to negotiate prices and more availability for vendors and venues because of less wedding competition. Also, you can be very creative regarding your reception menu. Think hot chocolate, comfort foods and family recipes. These items will help bring a sense of nostalgia and holiday memories to your attendees. However, speaking of the holidays, it can also be a con. You are competing with Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Hanukkah, family travels and more. For your guests, you might want to think about how far they will have to travel to your location and the accommodations they might have to make if they need to spend the night. Traveling during this time of the year is higher and can be affected by the weather. Depending on your venue location, getting snowed in at your wedding could happen. Also, it will be cold. If your wedding is outdoors, consider getting heaters and tents for your guests.

SPRING – MARCH, APRIL AND MAY:

As mentioned above, spring is the start of wedding season, and things will get busy. Venues and vendors will get booked up fast by other couples. However, like winter, you can’t beat the scenery, especially with all the flowers in bloom.

Don’t forget the weather is unpredictable – a possible cold front could come through, or a quick rain shower could interrupt your plans. Also, if allergies bother you, spring might not be the best option for your wedding. You don’t want to be sneezing while walking down the aisle. Remember due to the popularity of the season, a springtime wedding needs to be planned well in advance and be prepared for an increase in prices.

SUMMER – JUNE, JULY AND AUGUST:

Did you know that June is the most popular month for weddings? Hint, hint, this is something to pay attention to if you are set on a summer wedding. You will be getting married in the midst of a very busy wedding season. These three months offer many advantages, such as longer days, warm weather and more relaxed schedules for guests. Often guests will better be able to attend destination weddings or locations that are farther away.

However, vacation plans may come into conflict with your date.

Summer is an excellent season for outdoor and evening events.

Another pro is the abundance of flowers in season with at least one for every color scheme. Lastly, utilize the fresh foods that are in season for your reception. Think fresh fruits, vegetables and more. As for the cons, be aware of hotter temperatures and possible health concerns for your wedding attendees. Also, there is nothing worse than a sweaty and sticky wedding party and guests. Finally, a summer wedding shares the similarities of spring with requiring advanced planning and a price incline.

FALL – SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER:

Fall is a favorite season for many. The weather is cooler, but not yet freezing, and falling leaves are the optimal setting for wedding pictures. During this time of the year, there are more choices for unique themes and creative décor. Deeper color schemes are more appropriate (think jewel tones), prices are beginning to decrease, saving you some money and the fall weather is fairly predictable and beautiful. The cons include possible scheduling conflicts with the beginning of a new school year, Halloween and Thanksgiving, days getting shorter and fewer flowers in season. In addition, more fall weddings are held at indoor venues, which means more competition in bookings.

The bottom line is that no matter what month you decide to have your wedding in, it will be gorgeous and memorable. Just make sure your special day is planned at a time when there are few obstacles and more happy moments.

Seeing Green Unofficially, one can guess that the first wedding flowers were probably roses or perhaps wildflowers, which may have been available more readily and less expensive. And, before the world knew what hit ‘em, “trends” began to emerge! Such as daisies for the flower child bride, hydrangeas for a spring garden wedding, Cala lilies for an elegant affair and bird-of-paradise for the tropics for example. While the variety of florals for wedding celebrations is as endless as that of wedding gowns and rings, one thing remains consistent behind them all: Greenery.

You would be hard-pressed to find a wedding designed without a hint of green backing the gorgeous bouquets, boutonnieres or helping to fill out and enhance a lush installation on an arbor, altar, fence or doorway. typically quite large and might seem monstrous when compared to the eucalyptus varieties; however, the monstera leaf is still a graceful charmer. It hints toward tropics and can be used individually or as a sexy background.

Magnolia – Not just southern as heck, magnolia is a tried and true

seasonal staple with woody stems and sturdy, two-faced leaves boasting deep green and golden brown sides.

Leucadendron – This fun greenery isn’t completely green! Setting it

apart from its leafy neighbors, the leucadendron loves to show off rusty, red tips and stems and can make any flower shine. Sometimes, it looks and feels more like a flower itself!

Fern – With leaves on both sides of their stems, fern greens are a delightful

way to add fullness without adding weight. They’re soft and feminine but can also complement the most contemporary styles.

Wedding Guest Attire – How to Word on Invites

You have dreamed of your wedding your whole life, but in your dream, you didn’t picture your cousin showing up in jeans for your formal evening reception. Some guests won’t know what to wear without being told directly about the dress code.

Mentioning a dress code on your invitation will not only help keep the look of your wedding the way you envision but will also help your guests know what is expected of them.

The easiest way to let your guests know what to wear is to include a dress code in the lower right-hand corner of your invitation or on your reception card. Here are some acceptable terms to help guide your guests in what they should wear.

CASUAL

FORMAL ATTIRE OR BLACK TIE OPTIONAL

These two phrases are very common in today’s weddings. They indicate that the wedding party will be in formal wedding attire, and it’s optional for all guests. This could be a dark suit or tux for the men and formal evening wear (floor-length dresses or evening pantsuits) for the women.

BLACK TIE

Black Tie usually indicates an evening affair where the men wear tuxedos, and the women wear formal gowns of any length. When choosing Black Tie, keep in mind who might be attending your wedding.

If your guests are all college kids, they might not have the money to rent tuxedos.

WHITE TIE

Casual dress means wedding guests can wear pretty much anything they want. Be careful with casual dress, though, as your crazy uncle might come in a tank top and short shorts and not the polo shirt and dress pants that you thought he would.

This is the most formal of all wedding dress codes and is seen the least.

You will see White Tie receptions at events such as White House-type functions where the gentlemen will dress in long-tail tuxedos, and the women wear full-length ball gowns.

COCKTAIL ATTIRE, SEMI-FORMAL OR DRESSY CASUAL

If you are planning a themed wedding, then be specific as to what you want your guests to wear. For example, if you are doing a Halloween-themed wedding, let your guests know that “Costumes are encouraged.” Going to a color-themed wedding such as a white wedding? Let your guests know that “White attire is required.” Want your guests in jeans? Let them know that “Jeans are encouraged.” Most guests are not going to assume that casual means jeans.

All three of these phrases are asking guests to dress somewhere between formal and casual. This would be a cocktail dress for the ladies and a suit and tie or a sports coat for the guys. This is the most common of the dress codes as most guests have something similar to this already in their closet.

BEACH FORMAL

When you think of a beach wedding, you think casual, which is why formal is tacked on to the end. Beach formal attire would include a formal summer sundress (tea-length or knee-length) with flats for the ladies and a summer suit with a linen shirt, linen pants or khakis and sandals for the guys.

Don’t expect your guests to know what you want them to wear. Let them know ahead of time by including it on your invitation and even your wedding website. It will save them the stress of trying to figure out what you want them to wear and help keep your wedding look the way you always dreamed of.

Choosing a wedding photographer will likely be one of the most important decisions you make when planning your wedding. It will also likely be one of the more expensive items on your budget list. The reason behind both of these statements is that wedding photography is irreplaceable. You will never have a second chance to get it right. Unexpected Wedding Costs

Weddings can be expensive, but setting a budget, in the beginning, will keep you on track. Sticking to your budget, though, can be hard because of so many unexpected costs. Here are some easily overlooked items that you should consider when planning your budget.

such as a candy bar. Have small boxes for people to take the candy home. It can serve as a favor and your dessert.

VENDOR MEALS

BEAUTY TREATMENTS

Whether a vendor has it written in the contract or not, plan on paying for your vendors’ meals. Talk to your caterer about a separate vendor meal than what your guests are eating to possibly save a few dollars.

YOUR BACHELORETTE PARTY

Flowers are a typical budget item, but what about the other décor items that you might want to incorporate such as candles, candle holders, signage for your guests, specialty linens and lanterns? Depending on your look, this could easily be hundreds of dollars.

PAPER PRODUCTS

It’s a good idea to plan on 5-10% of your budget for vendor tips. Some often-forgotten vendors include bartenders, servers, valets, coat check attendants, officiants, makeup artists, hair stylists, the cake delivery team and limo drivers. Some vendors will state it in their contracts if a tip is included in the price. If not, and the service is good, then plan on including a gratuity.

Having your hair and makeup done for your wedding will be something you plan for, but there are other beauty items that you might want to indulge in before your wedding such as getting your nails done, hair highlighted, facial or a stress relieving massage.

Bachelorette parties are becoming bigger than ever including mini vacations with your girls. Usually not planned until right beforehand, talk with your maid of honor early on to find out what she might want to do.

If it’s going away for a night or more, put aside some of your budget to cover those extra costs.

When you think of your paper goods, you think of invitations and savethe-date cards, but don’t forget about postage, programs, place cards, “thank you” notes and favor tags. These are all things you won’t think about until the wedding is a few weeks out, and by then you will have likely spent your invitation budget.

ALTERATIONS

You found the perfect dress. It fit perfectly within your budget, but it might not fit you perfectly. It might need a little tuck or the hem a bit shorter. Depending on the alteration, it could run from $200 to $1,000 pretty quickly.

PRE-WEDDING PARTY ATTIRE

You budgeted for your wedding dress, but what about the other events you will want cute outfits for? Plan a clothing line item in your budget for your bridal shower, bachelorette party, bridal tea, rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.

FAVORS

Favors can run a couple of dollars per person even if you are a DIYer. Want to save on your favors? Give one per couple or even opt out of having them. Another idea is to include them as part of your reception

SALES TAX AND SERVICE CHARGES

With every vendor proposal you get, check to make sure it includes sales tax in the quote. 4.75% might not seem like a lot, but add that to the cost of your reception, and it will make an impact on your budget. You might be surprised to see a service charge added to your invoice as well.

Some vendors will use that instead of a gratuity while others will apply it to the cost of running their business. Either way, averaging 18-20% will increase the bottom line quickly.

EMERGENCY FUND

Finally, have an emergency fund. Set aside 10 to 20% for “other” items. This could be a change in décor, your parents are pressuring you to invite the cousin you don’t like, you break a nail at the rehearsal and have to get it fixed or 100 other unplanned things that you didn’t budget for.

There is no way to know, in advance, how much you will end up spending when your wedding is done, but by preparing for the unexpected ahead of time, you won’t be left scrambling to come up with extra cash at the last minute.

Giving Your Guests a Warm Welcome to Your Wedding

A couple’s wedding day is a very special time in their lives. It’s a day all about them, their love and sharing their happiness with family and friends. During your wedding festivities, keep in mind that your guests are taking time out of their schedules to attend your wedding. In return, you and your groom need to welcome your attendees and thank them for coming. One way to do this is by creating welcome bags. These favors are a nice gesture to help make your wedding personal and memorable. Also, they make great souvenirs to remember the special day. When it comes to these gifts, there are some items that are usually included, such as a welcome letter. However, one thing is important – make them unique and personalized to you. Let’s take a look at some of the must-haves and individualized ideas for welcome bags.

• First, a welcome bag doesn’t have to be in a bag. Get creative and think outside of the box. One option to use is a decorative box. Also, tote bags, gift bags and mini wine crates make great containers. If the majority of your guests are traveling and going to be staying overnight, consider something that would be easy to carry and pack in a suitcase. Don’t forget to figure out the details for how your guests will receive their bags and who will receive a bag. Maybe you arrange for the tokens to already be in the attendees’ hotel rooms when they arrive or maybe leave them at the front desk for guests to pick up when they check-in. For recipients who are staying in a hotel, you don’t have to have a bag per person. For a couple sharing a room, only one welcome bag is appropriate. If two singles are sharing a room and don’t have plus ones, then they will each get their own. Just keep in mind the cost because it can add up quickly. For this, you’ll need to take into account the bags and the items you will be including. Also, be aware of possible hotel and concierge fees for delivering.

• A very common element of this tradition is a welcome letter. This piece is designed as a “thank you” note to your guests. Also, for out-of-town guests, it includes an itinerary for all the events and various details.

In addition, the letter can include suggestions for local restaurants,

activities and sights. Lastly, a map around town and directions to get to the venues are key. Talk with your local visitor’s center to see if they are willing to donate any literature for you to put into the favors. After you have the welcome letter, there are no limits for what a welcome bag should include.

• One option is to create a welcome bag with particular items from your hometown and/or home state. For example, a Winston-Salemspecific welcome bag could contain Moravian cookies, little bottles of Cheerwine and Texas Pete, and coupons for Krispy Kreme. This is a great way for guests to get to know more about the couple and their background. Plus, out-of-town attendees are able to learn about another city and/or state. Support local businesses while planning on your pieces. Some ideas are fresh produce from farmers or something handmade, like soaps, candles or chocolates.

• If your wedding has a theme, connect it to your welcome bags.

Another option is to put items from your wedding’s season into the bags. For a Christmas wedding, you could include candy canes, packs of hot chocolate and a small gift, such as a picture frame. This tip can work for any season, holiday or month. Think about what people like about that certain time of the year and personalize it to fit your likes.

If your wedding’s theme is centered around a book, movie or place, again think about what makes that unique and memorable, such as adding in wands for a Harry Potter-themed wedding.

• Other frequent objects to incorporate are a sweet snack, a salty snack, a beverage (usually water or a mini bottle of wine or champagne), breath mints, stain remover pens, hand sanitizer and first aid supplies, such as Band-Aids and Advil.

Wedding welcome bags are a special tradition to make your out-of-town guests feel more included on your day. There are many options for what these gifts can include. Just make sure they are one of a kind to you, your groom and your wedding.

To the creative, inventive bride-to-be who is constantly ambushed by traditional wedding dress designs plastered in ads, popular bridal boutiques and maybe even a relative’s wedding; to the artsy bride who wants to break tradition and create an awe-inspiring wedding that will leave an imprint in people’s minds, there are many ways to go about scoring an alternative-style wedding dress.

WHERE TO BEGIN?

Determine if you want to buy your dress or if you want to design it yourself. If purchasing a dress is preferable, you can shop either locally or online. If you’re in a physical store, tell your stylist that you want a more unique, non-traditional look, and he or she will help you from there! If you prefer to design your dress, there are many online resources to try, but Bluethreadbridal.com may be ideal for you. You don’t even have to be a fashion designer! The website offers different templates for you to build your dream dress from scratch. You can be as creative and quirky as you like!

Look into wearing different colors. Oftentimes the non-traditional bride does not want to limit herself with a mere white or ivory dress.

She may want her wedding dress to be peppered with color. There are wedding dress designs that are black and white, rose gold, light blue, all black, lavender, purple, gray and even red. Some dresses come in a blend of two colors whether it’s an ombre style or color block. You may want to think about what you want the color of your wedding dress to symbolize. Be creative with your colors with color block or ombre colors.

Color blocking gives your dress a hard juxtaposition of two or more colors but in a fashionable, attractive way. Ombre colors, unlike color block, also involves multiple colors, but the colors softly fade into one another as the human eye travels up and down your dress. INSPIRATION FOR THE ALTERNATIVE LOOK

In the modern fashion world, you will find unique elements that will offset any traditional dress and give others something extra to look at.

Fringe. Whether you want to do a modern, chic fringe or a simple 60s hippie fringe, it will add a unique touch to your final look.

Bridal jumpsuits. So, you want to wear the pants in the

relationship? Bridal jumpsuits are another high-fashion alternative.
