Letter from the Editor Congratulations on your engagement! And if you are reading this and aren’t quite engaged yet, don’t worry, your secret is safe with us. It’s never too soon to get a bit of wedding inspiration!

As we’re putting this issue together, my husband and I just celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary! We had professional pictures taken for the first time since our wedding and it was so much fun! A huge thank-you to Melinda Lamm with Photo Artistry by Melinda for capturing these for us.

With this publication only printing twice a year, every issue is so very unique and special. However, this issue is special on a whole different level for me because it features one of my very best friends on the cover.

Kelsey + John have been close friends of ours for years and it is an absolute honor for us to feature them on our cover! This couple is all about having FUN and let me tell you, their wedding reflected that to the Nth degree. Jeff Scott with J. Darren Photography captured their beautiful Brookstown Inn wedding. By the time a bride gets engaged, she probably already has many ideas for her wedding in her head. Then, once the planning begins, hours might be spent on Pinterest, the Knot and other wedding websites.

With plenty of ideas for weddings, it can be easy for a bride to feel overwhelmed at the thought of making her dreams a reality. However, never fear, Left Lane Productions, a premier wedding and event-planning boutique in Thomasville, is here to help!

Established in 2011, Owner Jessica Nance always had a passion for wedding and event planning. She combined this love with her experience in logistics and organizing events, gained while serving in the US Army, and created Left Lane Productions.

“We are an all-inclusive wedding and event-planning boutique,” said Nance. “In addition, we offer directing, venue management, floral design and tuxedo rentals. We can help couples from start to finish in their wedding, from set up and clean up to flower arrangements.

It’s our job to plan their dream wedding and take the weight off their shoulders.”

The company offers different packages that include various services for brides and grooms. For example, the Total Wedding Package is all-inclusive with Left Lane Productions handling your flowers, linens, set up, clean up, photographer, catering and more. In addition, this package includes a full team to make sure your big day is perfect, letting you relax and enjoy what you have envisioned versus being stressed.

Another offered package is the My Perfect Day: Directing Package. This option includes one venue walk through, two wedding directors, preceremony, ceremony and reception coordination and direction, vendor recommendations and coordination, and more. Both packages include a free consultation and a payment plan for couples.

“We are unique in the sense that we offer a payment plan because many companies don’t,” said Nance. “Some brides think having a wedding planner and/or director is too expensive and won’t work with their budget. We suggest adding this service to their budget to start with because we can save you thousands of dollars on your venue, flowers, etc. We pass our vendor savings to our clients. Brides need to simply start with a free consultation. This gives them a chance to be open and ask questions in a judgment-free environment.”

Along with factoring a wedding planner and director into the budget, Nance suggests brides not be scared to inquire and ask questions about this service before deciding who to choose. In addition, she recommends knowing the value of what you are getting. For example,

are you paying for all-day assistance or for the ceremony only? Lastly, Nance offers the advice of knowing you can’t do it yourself and that relatives aren’t great options for directors. Instead, it is best to bring in the professionals.

“This is one of the biggest days of a person’s life, and it is impossible for them to worry about when the caterer will arrive or how to handle all of the family dynamics while getting ready,” said Nance. “Everyone at Left Lane Productions is trained to handle all kinds of situations. Our team is familiar with the psychology of high emotions and can serve as a type of counselor or friend. We are certified planners through The Bridal Society and keep up to date on the latest styles, education and research.”

When it comes to planning weddings, Left Lane Productions works closely with clients to incorporate their ideas into their big day.

They also help create a custom timeline to make sure no formality or idea is left undone.

“During the free consultation, we like to talk with the bride and make sure we are right for them and vice versa,” said Nance. “Your wedding is so special and intimate that you want to choose the planner and director who best matches you or makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Then, we discuss your ideas and talk through your style, color scheme, floral design, etc. I like to have brides share their Pinterest boards with us, which helps us see what they are thinking and how we can turn those ideas into realistic expectations. Over the next several months, there are general planning appointments and meetings with all the vendors. For each client, we make a custom timeline. Our team is willing to travel to venues and destination weddings, if needed. Even though we are based in the Triad, we have traveled to the coast, mountains, Charlotte and Virginia.”

According to Nance, planning changes are possible and can be made even on the wedding day. In addition, the team is able to react to obstacles and help the event flow as smoothly as possible.

The Reality of Rentals Special event rentals come in all shapes and sizes – right away you think of tents, tables and chairs – but what about lounge furniture or a dance floor, and more fun items such as brightly colored linens and elegant stemware?

We’ve put together a list of tips and advice from the professionals at Party Reflections – call it your rental Top 10 – to keep in mind when you begin gathering some of the crucial elements of your wedding celebration.

• If you’re planning to party in the great outdoors, a “rain plan” is essential to the success of your wedding. The one thing you can’t control is the weather, and if your ceremony, reception or both will take place outside, it’s much more difficult and much more costly to be scrambling to secure a tent on the Friday before your big day.

• Listen to and trust our event consultants.

There are so many details that come together for your big day and endless choices that can be overwhelming if you tackle them on your own; just like your professional planner overseeing your entire event, they can secure rentals with resources and options you wouldn’t find on your own.

• With a design center located right in our showroom, you can come in and actually create your wedding look onsite, while assembling chairs, linens, china, glassware and flatware to get a vision of the finished product. • Since special event rental companies invest in large quantities of inventory, it’s easy for clients to incorporate a current popular color or a trendy pattern into the party theme. The wider your resources, the more likely you’ll be to find that one shade of table linen you’ve had your heart set on.

• If you’re thinking of buying glass votives – or even the always-adorable Mason jars – why would you want to wash and store a hundred or so of them after the wedding?

Rent them, and the rental company takes care of all those post-celebration chores.

• Certain times of the year are busiest for wedding vendors, and if you’re marrying in May or October, for example, or around the holidays, secure your rentals early so the style and quantity of everything you need is available and confirmed.

• “Why can’t my fiancé and I simply pick up the farm table for our reception?” Great question, but there are some items that are not available for pick up based on size and weight. Let your event consultant determine the safest options for pick up and return of all your rentals.

• “One of my gold Chiavari chairs has a scuff on the leg.” While our team works to ensure the quality of each product that goes out the door – inspecting, cleaning, touchingup or replacing as needed – a rental chair is only new once. Working with trusted professionals, however, does ensure you’ll be given the highest quality product possible.

• In general, you’ll always need more napkins – and wine glasses and silverware – than your exact number of guests, and napkins are often rented in increments of 10. Glasses spill over and unexpected guests show up, so play it safe with a few extras of all the essentials.

5 Things To Do After the Engagement

He’s popped the question, and you said “yes.” Congratulations, you are engaged! But, now what? Pretty quickly, reality sets in and it becomes easy to feel overwhelmed by the fact that you now have to plan a wedding. That’s where the Forsyth Woman Engaged! team comes into play. We are here to equip you with the resources and lists that can add some ease to this exciting time, starting with what to do when reality sinks in.

TELL YOUR FAMILY

First and foremost, tell your family. Call your mom, call his mom and make your way through your contact lists. It is important for them to share in this exciting moment with you! From grandparents to siblings, announce the exciting news straight from the source. Keeping the initial phone calls to immediate family is appropriate but, if possible, avoid any social media announcements before telling your family. Once they all have heard the news, feel free to spread the exciting news like wildfire!

SET THE DATE, SORT OF

Set a date? Immediately? This might sound a bit far-fetched, but having an initial understanding of when you and your future husband would like to get married can keep some of the “when’s the big day?” questions at bay. Keep in mind family dates, holidays and, if your guests must travel, it’s considerate if you choose a cost-efficient time to travel. If committing to a specific date sounds too overwhelming, commit to a month or even a time of year, and work out the specifics at a later date since it is not uncommon for venues to be booked a year in advance.

MAKE A TENTATIVE LIST

Although it’s not the most romantic task, a tentative list of guests will be greatly beneficial when determining budget, venue and other wedding logistics such as cake size and required rental items. Without an idea of head count, it may be more difficult down the road to make definitive decisions. Sit down with your fiancé and even a family member or two and determine who are “must haves” and who could be a

“flex” attendee. Commonly, immediate family and close friends will be mandatory invitees, but co-workers and distant cousins may have to be skipped if space is becoming limited.

TALK AND SET A REALISTIC BUDGET

This is where most couples start to stress. Why? Well, because talking money can be uncomfortable and weddings are expensive. It may be easier to just rip this one off like a Band-Aid®. First, determine if you will be paying for the wedding on your own or receiving help from family.

If family members offer to help, ask them graciously how much they can contribute to your budget and start from there. Since your budget will ultimately control many parts of your wedding, big and small, it is imperative to prioritize the things that matter most. Spending extra money on food or having your favorite band may mean that you will need to cut elsewhere. Take notes on what you want your day to look and feel like, and it will be a lot easier to find your vendors and compare prices once your budget is set.

BRAINSTORM THE BIG DAY WHILE DOING YOUR HOMEWORK

Do you want to get married on a beach or somewhere local? Will it be small or large? All of these decisions will come up throughout the planning process. By discussing your priorities beforehand, you both will have input and will hopefully have a few fewer surprises along the way. Compare fantasies and create Pinterest boards to help you make decisions on location, color schemes and day of attire. You may even choose now to hire a wedding planner to help with these key decisions as well as provide you with the important tools to ensure all boxes are checked.

Most importantly; however, remember to have fun, relax and enjoy being engaged. The next few months may become stressful and full of emotions but not losing track of why you’re doing this is key to a fun and exciting wedding planning time!

Are You A Bridezilla?

BRIDEZILLA MAY REFER TO:

A bride whose behavior is seen as demanding or unreasonable. The word uses the -zilla suffix derived from the Japanese movie monster Godzilla. ~ Source: Wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridezilla Let me go on record as saying that I despise the term “bridezilla.” Or Groomzilla, Momzilla, etc. In fact, I’m not even sure Godzilla was a nice thing to call that poor, misunderstood beast in the movies! But, that’s for another article altogether.

You’re engaged, and plans are about to begin for what may be the most important day of your life thus far. You have dreams. You have ideas.

You have cramped fingers from adding weddingrelated pins to your Pinterest boards! How can you strike a balance between doing whatever it takes to see your visions become reality and, well, reality?

Here are some key pointers to keeping your stress level as low as possible while also feeling good that your wedding day is being planned to your liking and that your hopes and dreams are center stage. I am not going to call this article the “How Not to be a B-word” article because I have already stated my thoughts on that word. I prefer a more positive approach.

MAKE LISTS.

the thing is that goes wrong will not make you any less married at the end of the day! In fact, if you can dig deep inside for your funny bone, the “thing” that goes wrong might just be the thing that you both laugh about over each anniversary dinner! The DJ playing only Mariachi music all night instead of swing might be the story your kids roll their eyes at and get tired of hearing!

ABOVE ALL THINGS, KEEP PERSPECTIVE.

This is my suggestion for just about everything in life that can be a stressor or a challenge to sort out. However, in this case, I suggest that you make it so that you can then scratch through it with a vengeance and make a new list. Repeatedly. List #1 of your dream wedding “needs” might have something like this on it, for example:

Write it down if it’s your fantasy! Then break it down…is a glass carriage even something that can be hired, and what would the cost be for a 30-minute ride? Ditto for white horses. And really – is an Elizabethan costume flattering on any man? Chances are that you, your new spouse and your family will be just as delighted with a charming horse and buggy, driven by a nice guy in a tux and bow-tie.

CHOOSE ACCEPTANCE.

A wedding day – or if we’re honest – a wedding weekend has a lot of moving parts! When you consider all the logistics and details, it cannot be compared to a dinner party or even a black tie gala. There are numerous arrangements to be made, relationships to be managed and timelines to create and follow. It would be impossible for a day with as many components as a wedding day to go off 100% without a hitch! So, accepting that fact and knowing that chances are unless your clergy skips town, whatever

The love of your life asked you to marry him/ her. I am willing to bet that at no time during that proposal did he/she say “I will love you, and I want to spend my life with you if your bouquet contains fresh peonies, your bridesmaids’ dresses are ombre and the cake is gluten free.” Nope. And, you know why?

Because truly, the ONLY thing that is really important on your wedding day is the 15-20 minutes when two people who are madly in love with each other stand in front of an officiant, a rabbi or clergyman and pronounce to the world that they are soul mates; that for them, the search is over and a new life as one can begin. This beautiful, remarkable moment can happen in the rain, and you’re still just as in love.

It can happen even if his tux doesn’t fit and your veil blew off. It can happen with joy, laughter and delight because you have the rest of your lives together for swing music, Cinderella carriages and gluten-free cake.

There is no room for any kind of ‘Zilla on your most spectacular wedding day.

Bridal Shower Theme Ideas

Throwing a bridal shower can be quite the undertaking, but once you land on a theme or feel of the shower, you can roll with it and create a truly unforgettable experience for the bride-to-be!

Here are several ideas to help you prep for your next bridal shower:

BRUNCH & BUBBLY Throwing a brunch bridal shower is a great option because brunch food is truly easy, can be made (or picked up) ahead of time and most everyone loves brunch food. Hello, Bacon! Options other than bacon include egg casseroles, mini cinnamon rolls, French toast casserole, fresh fruit kabobs and sausage biscuits.

If you really want to add some fun to the day, create a “bubbly” station with different types of champagne and prosecco. People can choose their bubbles and then mix those with an assortment of fruit juices and fresh fruit, or enjoy it straight up! Make sure the brideto-be has her own special cup that stands out.

POTLUCK BRIDAL SHOWER A potluck bridal shower is another easy option because the guests help the host with the food! Each guest brings a dish and also brings the recipe printed out on a cute recipe card. The host should provide each guest with a recipe card included in the invitation to keep it consistent and chic. Brides will love this because each guest is showing his or her love by bringing a favorite dish and sharing the recipe, too! If you’re the host, find out what each guest is bringing ahead of time, so you can make sure there are no duplicates.

WINE TASTING

A wine-tasting bridal shower is a really fun experience! As the host, do research online for wines that are good to taste and what foods they pair well with. Purchase small, plastic tasting glasses (or small shot glasses) at your local party store, and ask the guests to vote at the end on what wine was their favorite. Get everyone to write their names down on a sheet of paper and, at the end of the bridal shower, draw a name or two to win a bottle of the winning wine!

HONEYMOON BRIDAL SHOWER

Whatever country or destination the couple is headed to for the honeymoon inspires the theme for this shower! Guests can bring gifts that can be enjoyed on the honeymoon or to prep for the honeymoon.

Examples are massages, dinners at the honeymoon resort and gift certificates. For food and decorations at the shower, have fun with the destination. If the bride and groom are headed to Paris, have croissants and Brie as part of the food spread. Or, if they are headed to Mexico, serve mini-tacos and margaritas and get the bride and groom to wear sombreros.

COOKING CLASS BRIDAL SHOWER

Contact your local kitchen store to see if they offer cooking classes or private events, and host the bridal shower there. It’s always fun to include an activity at a bridal shower because sometimes guests can get bored watching the bride open up gifts. Guests can bring kitchen gadgets and all items on her kitchen registry to this shower.

CHARITY SHOWER

If you’re hosting a bridal shower for a friend who really does not want any gifts, think about offering to host a charity bridal shower. Instead of bringing gifts to the party, guests can donate to the bride and groom’s charity of choice. That way, the party isn’t centered on gifts but instead on the cause of the charity. Encourage the bride or groom to inform the guests of what this charity means to them.

How to Create a

#WeddingHashtag

One of the first things brides and grooms think of when they get engaged, “What’s our wedding hashtag going to be?” Wedding hashtags can be tons of fun and useful for the bride and groom because post-wedding, you can check out all the amazing memories and photos from your special day! Here are several steps to make sure you’re on your way to the perfect wedding hashtag.

1. START WITH YOUR NAMES.

You may be thinking, “Well, yeah” but in all honesty sometimes names and obvious pairings get lost in all the brainstorming of hashtags. Put your last names and first names together and see how all of that is looking initially.

Do you have nicknames that most people know? Write those down too!

2. CAPITALIZE THE FIRST LETTER OF EACH WORD.

For example, #ClappForTheSmiths and #SkakleSoiree. If you capitalize each letter, it may be more obvious of your joke or pun, if you choose to go the funny route.

3. AVOID WORDS THAT ARE EASILY MISSPELLED.

Make things easy for your guests! It may even mean shortening longer names and moving words around. For example, switching #MelissaAndDaniel to #DanielAndMelissa.

4. CHECK THE HASHTAG!

You may think your hashtag is original and no one else could ever think of it, but trust me, you need to check it. If your hashtag is already being used, consider adding the year of the wedding behind it. For example, #ClappForTheSmiths2017

5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET SILLY.

It’s fun to throw some puns into the mix and get creative. Your guests are more likely to remember to use your wedding hashtag if it’s different and funny.

6. ALLITERATION AND RHYMES ARE IN THE GAME.

Think about starting your hashtags with the same letter or rhyming words. You are not going to be able to do everything and all of the above, but have fun with it and, if you have an unforgettable rhyming hashtag, use it!

7. SPREAD THE WORD.

If you really want your guests to use your hashtag as much as possible, include it on your invitations and wedding programs and make sure you have signage at your reception with the designated wedding hashtag. Most the photos are posted using the hashtag at the reception, so your guests are going to want a little reminder.

If you take anything away from this wedding hashtag checklist, take this away – it’s your wedding and you need to do what you want. You may get tons of suggestions and opinions from family and friends, but go with what you both want and what represents your wedding day the best!

When it comes to planning a wedding, you want to make it one of the most special days of your life. You also want to make it meaningful to you and your fiancé. A wedding can be personalized through theme, decorations, venue and more.

Some couples choose to add in meaning with ideas and items that relate to a memorable time in their lives. They remember a connection to a special time in their lives together. One of my favorite wedding themes is making the day reflect the couple’s hometown, favorite place or their current city/state. Since we live in North Carolina, below are some ideas on how you can have a uniquely NC wedding.

VENUE:

North Carolina has the best of both words – mountains on the west and the coast on the east. The Tar Heel state has urban cities and rural country towns. Also, there are historic museums, houses and vineyards. When making your wedding NC-related, one of the first things to start with is the venue. Do you want a wedding at the Outer Banks or a backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains? Think about a place that is special for you and your fiancé. It might be your own hometown or the place you met or had your first date. In addition, consider venues that represent NC and its culture and history to tie into your theme. Some popular venues in our home state include the Outer Banks, the museums in Raleigh, Castle McCulloch in Jamestown, The Millennium Center in Winston-Salem, wineries in the Yadkin Valley, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville and the Sugar Mountain Resort in Banner Elk.

DECORATIONS:

Add some NC flare to your wedding through your decorations. The ideas are limitless. One option is choosing decorations that match your venue. If you are having your ceremony and reception in a mountain lodge, you may decide to go more rustic. For some venues, let the building’s structure and character enhance your decorations. Another way to add in your personality is by using NC-related designs. For example, if you went to Chapel Hill, one of your colors might be Carolina blue. If you love Winston-Salem, you might use items that resemble the Camel City such as the skyline, various attractions from the city and more. State symbols are often good go-to garnishes for statethemed weddings. Our state’s flower is the flowering dogwood.

You can incorporate this plant into your flower designs. The Fraser fir, pine tree and Carolina lily are other popular NC plants.

In addition, more state symbols to include are the cardinal bird, southern Appalachian brook trout (food option idea for your attendees), the emerald stone and Seagrove pottery.

FOOD:

Speaking of state symbols, we are a state known for our food. Barbeque, slaw, hushpuppies, Cheerwine, Krispy Kreme, Texas Pete – the list goes on and on. Combine the flavors of NC into your menu. This is a great way to introduce out-of-town guests to our culture with traditional foods. For welcome bags and favors, make the items depict the venue and/or city of your wedding.

If you are welcoming guests to your special day in Winston-Salem, fill the bag with Moravian cookies, gift cards to Krispy Kreme, small glass bottles of Cheerwine, cheese straws from Dewey’s or Salem Kitchen, and Buck O’Hairen’s Legendary Sunshine drink. Think about items that are made in a certain city or area that could be used in your cuisine.

THEMES:

If you want to have a true, uniquely NC wedding, create a NC theme. Your theme could be about a movie filmed or a book written in the state. Also, you could center your wedding on the story and time period of a historic site. For movies, if possible, have the venue be the movie’s filming location. For example, if you love The Hunger Games, pick somewhere in Asheville or if you’re a fan of Dirty Dancing, choose Lake Lure. As for books, you can’t go wrong with anything Nicholas Sparks. Lastly, throw a themed wedding around a historic site, such as a 1920s wedding at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. A uniquely NC wedding is one that you and your guests will remember forever. Be sure to personalize the day to you and your fiancé. After all, your wedding day is all about the two of you.

Perfect Timing

While your thoughts may be swirling around those handpainted invitations you saw on Pinterest or those cute savethe-date magnets you adore, it’s not just one detail, but also a combination of elements that will define your celebration. It’s the hour, the venue and the formality of your attire that will eventually set the mood.

• On Saturdays, the most popular times and venues are being juggled among lots of other couples, so you may have more bargaining power (and find you receive more personal attention) with vendors such as florists and photographers on a Friday or Sunday date. The same is true for hotel rates if you plan to reserve a block of rooms.

While you’re tossing around possible times and dates for the big day, consider these scenarios and some less-than-traditional options that may suit your style:

• Many couples have a childhood minister or another favorite officiant they are saddened to find out is booked every Saturday throughout the spring and summer months, but he or she may be completely available on several Sunday afternoons.

• Glance down your guest list. If the majority of your friends and family are out of town, make it an entire wedding weekend by planning activities for Friday and Saturday that will show off your home town, then build up to the actual ceremony on Sunday afternoon or early evening.

• Do you need to re-examine your wedding budget? There may be less expensive venue options on a Friday or Sunday, so think beyond Saturdays which are often booked a year or more in advance. If your wedding planning window doesn’t allow you time to land a prime Saturday slot, you’re likely to find your dream location is still available on an alternate day.

• The Sunday of a holiday weekend – think Labor Day or Memorial Day – is actually ideal, so guests have an extra travel day after the wedding. (Note: If you do choose a holiday weekend, alert your guests early on, so they can clear their calendars. Yes, now’s the time to order those cute save-the-dates!)

• If you’re not tied to a certain season because of work or school demands, remember that the months between May and October are the most popular for weddings, and therefore, the most costly and the most crowded. Unless your heart is set on an outdoor ceremony, don’t overlook the pure magic of a winter wedding.

• This is also the time to rank your wedding day priorities. If you long to capture fabulous sunset photos, the time and formality of your event will revolve around that. Savvy photographers know how to research and monitor prime sunset times which should be the starting point for your planning.

• If you’re the lucky destination bride, your family and close friends have already blocked out time to join you, so with advance notice, a weekday celebration somewhere tropical is also likely less expensive and less crowded. Flights may offer better deals during the week, as well.

• Receptions don’t have to include dinner or even a buffet.

If you’re planning a more casual ceremony – suit and tie, no tux and a shorter or mid-length gown – make it at the “brunch” hour (typically 11 am – 2 pm) which is increasing in popularity and offers a delicious array of breakfast-style menu options. One benefit of a morning ceremony is that you can invite friends and family to join the two of you later in the day for sightseeing, a sporting event or a casual dinner. You’re spending quality time with your favorite people and still have the entire next day free to escape to your honeymoon location!

DIY Wedding?

You’re engaged, and what’s the first thing you do? If you are like the majority of today’s brides, you open your Pinterest App and start hunting. Then what? How do you know what you can do yourself without a Pinterest fail and when it’s time to call in the experts? Hopefully, we can help you figure it out. There are three things a bride can almost always safely do herself – décor, favors and little details. And, there are three Pinterest fail traps waiting for every bride – hair and makeup, catering and photography.

DO: DÉCOR

Some of my favorite weddings, both as a wedding planner and as a guest, have been when the bride and groom (along with family and friends) have provided all or some of the wedding décor themselves. It isn’t just about flowers anymore. You can use a hula-hoop and ribbon to make a gorgeous chandelier. You can use vases and votive holders collected from vintage stores with a mix of flowers and candles. You can use your favorite photos as centerpieces (Shutterfly.com).

Whether you are trying to save money, or you just want to make your special day even more special, this is an easy DIY.

FAVORS

Let me start by saying, not everyone incorporates the tradition of wedding favors. And frankly, some wedding favors are never going to be used again. But, a smart bride can make a lovely favor that doesn’t just say “We got married, here are our names in case you forget.”

Use a gorgeous fan for a summer wedding or pumpkin spice ANYTHING for a fall wedding. You can purchase local food or drinks and make a wedding treat bag.

How cute would it be to provide bottles of Cheerwine and Moon Pies for a North Carolina wedding? When you are thinking about favors, always think personal and practical.

LITTLE DETAILS

Every bride and groom should add little touches that show it’s their wedding. When you decorate your home, you don’t just buy the room display on the show room floor with no personal touches. Your wedding should be the same. Add a special dance, a special cocktail recipe, anything that’s special to you as a couple. This will make your day even more memorable for you and your guests.

DON’T: CATER YOUR OWN WEDDING

This should go without saying, but never, ever assume you can cater your own wedding and remain sane. Imagine it’s the big day, you walk down the aisle in two hours and you are still in the kitchen perfecting the final touches on a buffet dinner for 100 people. Even if you are a caterer, resist the urge. And please, do not bake your own cake. You’ll be nervous enough about your wedding without adding the stress of making a cake or food to satisfy everyone. Trendy desserts like donut boards, cupcakes and macaroon trees may look easy, but displays like this require last minute details you just won’t have time to handle. So, buy your Krispy Kreme donuts, but have someone else set up the donut board.

HAIR AND MAKE-UP

Don’t be nervous, but EVERYONE will be staring at you on your wedding day. You are the center of the show. This is not a day to DIY your hair and makeup. You will look at the pictures and video of your wedding for years. You may even use the wedding pictures for your first-year-ofmarriage Christmas card (did I mention Shutterfly?). Your mom will show these pictures to everyone that comes into her home from the day of your wedding until her first grandchild. You want to be a beautiful, stressfree bride, so call that stylist now.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Yes, you obviously can’t take your own pictures and still be in them. So, why put this in a DIY Do’s and Don’ts? The reason is simple; I’ve seen too many disappointed brides when they ask their friend/neighbor/aunt who’s an amateur photographer to photograph their wedding. Yes, this saves money. No, this does not provide the best pictures. You want to be able to look back on this day years from now and see the smiling face of your husband when he first saw you in your wedding dress; or see the picture of your niece standing in your brother’s shoes to dance like a grown up at the reception. You don’t want to see a blur that may have been your first dance or your cake cutting. You want to immortalize your wedding, not watercolor it.

Now go ahead and start looking for hula-hoop chandeliers on Pinterest.

These would be great for a fall or winter wedding…the rich, bold colors bring warmth during the colder months of the year…they also pick up the colors of the landscape in the fall. If you line the aisle with lit candles during an evening wedding, this will add to the gold tones and really bring out the plum and navy blue accents throughout the venue.

LIGHT TURQUOISE, DARK GREEN & IVORY

Finally, a color combination for a spring wedding! These colors are absolutely gorgeous together and will give you a lot of room to be creative with other elements of the wedding. Because they are all fairly neutral, you can add other colors into your wedding party’s attire, the décor at the venue and the flowers without clashing.

If you are using a wedding planner, ask about colors you have in mind to get feedback on the timing of your wedding and the availability of the flowers you love. While you can get some flowers year-round, picking flowers that are in season will cut down on the cost that might be associated with getting them shipped. Many magazines and wedding resources focus on advice for the bride or the mother of the bride, but there are certainly questions from other members of the wedding party that need answers! While it is easy to assume the groom has no opinions about the big day and just does what his bride tells him, many modern-day grooms want to be involved.

Maybe your groom doesn’t want to wear tails, maybe he is allergic to a particular flower that you never knew about or maybe he has always wanted a particular song to be played during the ceremony. Believe it or not, many men have thought about this day before the real planning began. Maybe since the moment he met his future bride!

Below are a few areas in which you may want to trust your man to take the lead:

CHOOSING HIS OWN FORMALWEAR.

Your groom knows his own taste. While you can suggest how formal the attire needs to be, why not let him choose the cuts and overall design?

He wants to be comfortable as well! This is a decision you can certainly make together – little details like the color of the tie or the flowers in the boutonniere can be agreed on later.

SELECTING HIS GROOMSMEN/ GROOMSWOMEN.

Yes, I said “groomswomen.”

While it may not be recognized yet by autocorrect, this is a term that exists in modern weddings.

Many of us have good friends of the opposite sex, and we want them to stand up there with us right beside our other best friends. Let your groom choose his attendants, and celebrate the fact that he is a forward thinker who doesn’t shy away from breaking the norm a little!

You are picking out china, crystal and silverware. Don’t you think there’s a chance your beloved might want some say in something you’ll use for years and years to come? There may even be some items he’d like for around the house that you wouldn’t have considered, like a tool or a grill gadget.

Now’s the time!

THE MAJOR DECISIONS.

While this really goes without saying, the man of your dreams should be consulted before you finalized any dates, venues, themes or major vendors like caterers and photographers. You want him to enjoy the day as much as you do, so allow him to be involved as much as he wants to be!

This is one of the most important days in both of your lives, and it is a great initial test of how well you work together under pressure and stress. Whether he wants to be consulted on the details of the big day or not, he’ll appreciate your thoughtfulness in asking. And, if he wants to get involved, it’s just one more person to take some of the burden off you!

Amy Lynne Originals, a Winston-Salem based fresh floral design company, has been in existence for 11 years and is a familiar name for brides and wedding coordinators “looking for an added touch of originality and style.” Located in historic West End, the unique building design, bold red paint and enormous Gerber daisy make an impactful statement as you drive by; and they reflect the creative energy that resides inside where Amy Dunlap, owner and head designer, creates one-of-a-kind floral works of art.

A Southern Staple to Add to Your Wedding Day

When it comes to scheduling your consultation, the bakery already has brides with weddings in 2018 and 2019 discussing their cakes. On average, it is suggested to make your appointment about three to four months ahead of your wedding. In extreme cases, Dewey’s can make a wedding cake with a two-week notice. One thing to keep in mind for setting your consultation date is how busy Dewey’s Bakery is during the holiday season.

“We pause cake consultations with couples during November and December due to the increased foot traffic in the bakery,” said DiLizio. “We find it easier to give the couple the deserved attention and space in the new year.”

As stated above, pictures of designs are welcomed in the meetings. The design team is open to anything, and DiLizio states that with Dewey’s talented team, it is very rare for them to come across a design they can’t accomplish. If the bride is unsure of what she wants for her wedding cake, the design team will work with her to create her dream vision. Everyone at Dewey’s is up to date on the latest wedding cake styles that are popular among many.

“There is a gold design trend going on right now and will carry into next year,” said DiLizio. “Brides are loving the metallic gold, hand-painted designs and the classic white on white. Textured designs have also become important; there is little demand for the smooth tiers. We have seen designs that switched between textures and florals. It’s becoming very modern.”

For 2018, wedding cakes will be full of color. Darker colors, such as navy, plum and jewel tones are already coming in through orders at the bakery. For spring cakes, the popular colors are pastels. A three-to-four-tiered cake is most common, and some couples will do a small two-tier cake and a dessert table to complement.

Since 1930, Dewey’s Bakery has been a staple in Winston-Salem. They are known for their delicious cake squares, yummy ice cream and tasty Moravian cookies and sugar cake. “This is a very budget-friendly option and easy to do,” said DiLizio. “Customers have ordered cupcakes, cookies and cake squares. We just introduced a line of cookies from our vintage recipes. They are southern-inspired flavors and have been a hit. I can see this as something brides will request to use as their wedding favors for guests.”

You may know and love them from T.J.’s Deli & Grill in Winston-Salem, but now, they have taken a leap into the popular food truck arena. They are serving a mouth-watering menu at a variety of venues around town – breweries, wineries, festivals and local corporate events, loving the fact that they are a small business promoting other small businesses, as well. If you’re looking for a fun twist to your reception fare – and if you don’t know what a cham burger is – read on!

This new venture is a labor of love for Mitch, and now his daughter, Elizabeth, who has embraced the food truck role with boundless energy.

“My daughter grew up around the business and has always been enamored of food trailers and festivals,” said Mitch. “I became a cheerleader for her passion, so we purchased a new food truck. I know the ins and outs of operating a successful restaurant, and she has tremendous knowledge – and passion – for the business.”

He also knows she will be met with huge success. “When it is not up to her standards, the food is simply remade,” said Mitch.

Through social media and recommendations from a loyal base of longtime customers of T.J.’s Deli & Grill, the new Hunger Flames food truck is booking quickly, and they are anxious to offer a slightly different option for engaged couples looking for a new twist on cuisine for their rehearsal dinner or reception.

and all their signature favorites in between. Think tater tots with chili, cheese, sour cream and chives, indescribable gravy fries, hand-patted burgers made from fresh ground chuck (even a pimento cheese version), buffalo chicken tender wraps and the wildly popular cham and buffalo cham burgers. For you beginners, that’s fresh chicken dipped in a buttermilk batter, deep fried and topped with grilled, smoked ham and melted smoked provolone, served on a premium bun.

Mitch says he’s catered many traditional weddings through the years, plus more casual cookouts, and he knows that food and fellowship can be the real heart of the event. The truck’s most recent addition would be a delightful element for any rehearsal dinner, wedding reception or postwedding party – locally made ice cream! It’s always been a favorite at T.J.’s Deli, and both Mitch and Elizabeth agreed it was an obvious choice to add to the food truck menu.

“We just did an event for 540 folks where we set up an ice cream sundae bar with three flavors of ice cream and all the fixings,” said Mitch.

Their plan is to add a colorful ice cream cart with a colorful umbrella – wouldn’t that be charming at your outdoor wedding gathering?

For weddings, Hunger Flames suggests booking the food truck three months in advance. A typical visit to your event is four hours with services and menu options scaled to fit your event style and food tastes.

• Make sure your photographer captures the last look between the bride and her father as they enter the ceremony. It’s an emotional – and important – father/ daughter moment.

• As guests are exiting the ceremony, the newlyweds stealing away outside or to a secluded room to share their first moments as a wedded couple. (This is our version of the “first look!”)

• Dramatic, one-of-a-kind shots during the reception: the bride and groom in front of an amazing sunset, the sun through stained glass windows of the chapel, a sparkling chandelier, a mother and son embrace.
